The pace is hotting up as local elections draw near
Mane
Official electioneering starts today (Friday) in what could be the closest-ever elections. All local posts are up for grabs, and 88 Ayuntamientos will be voted on, along with the make-up of the Cabildos and Canarian Government. Paulino Rivero, current President of the Canary Islands, is not standing - a decision made six months ago - and a poll this week showed he had an approval rating of just 38%. His Canary Coalition party has had a ratings boost since he decided to step down and, it seems, it will have the most seats in the local government after the 24th May election. A CIS poll reveals it would get 27% of the vote that’s 17 seats. The socialist PSOE is polling at 24%, or 15-16 seats, while the Popular Party (Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s party) would get around 13 seats. Newcomers Podemos are on course for 10 seats, while Ciudadanos are set for five. In Spain they have the proportional representation system, which sees people vote for a party not a candidate. The percentage of votes gives them a certain number of seats, and their candidates are elected on the party’s preference system. And, as in the UK, as many as 40% of voters are still said to be undecided.
The local CC party obviously has strong support, especially in the North of Tenerife, but in the South it’s the PSOE which has made most progress over the last year. The General Election in Spain is in November, and, as in the local UK elections, the Government is expected to take a hit. While nationally the PP are polling at around 26%, down from 40% a year ago, that figure at a local level would still see them just about holding their current number of councillors. Fernando Clavijo is front-runner to succeed Rivero as Canarian President, but the CC candidate has only a slight lead in the polls. PSOE’s Patricia Hernández is closing fast, while Roman Rodriguez, of the Nueva Canarias, and the PP’s María Australia Navarro, are not too far behind. In Tenerife, Carlos Alonso is a strong fa-
vourite to win his first election as Cabildo President. He was promoted to the post after the retirement of Ricardo Melchior in 2013, and is seen to have done a good job so far. Likewise, Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, who still covets the Cabildo job, should retain his role. The South of Tenerife will see a fascinating campaign, and the possibility of some real political change. In Adeje, popular. Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga again leads his PSOE party into battle. In 2011 they polled nearly 55% of the vote, gaining 13 councillors. And it is confident of increasing that figure. Under Fraga, Adeje has taken some giant steps forward and tomorrow (Saturday), the PSOE is inviting those who live in Adeje to meet its candidates at the Magma Centre. The party’s press re-
Nino
lease says: “As an EU citizen living in Spain, you are entitled to vote in local and European elections. It’s your town hall, and with more local powers than in many other countries, so it’s worth taking the time to get to know who is representing you. If you live in Adeje, it’s the people in the Adeje Town Hall who represent you and your interests.” At 7.30pm, all the candidates will be present and you can seek them out for a chat, before or after the presentation. The Council has already made advances in promoting its bilingualism, and those candidates who speak English will be there to answer any questions you may have. “Adeje is currently listed as one of the three boroughs in the Canary Islands that have best overcome the economic crisis,” says Carmen Rosa, one of the councillors seeking
re-election, who speaks fluent English. “We have worked hard in the areas of job creation, welfare benefits, and cultural and sporting activities so important for the development of young people, and we have made integration and co-existence one of the cornerstones of our policies in general.” The PSOE believes that diversity is the key to the region, and this is reflected in the list of candidates selected for this election, with ex-pat Clio O’Flynn, an Irish woman who has lived in Callao Salvaje since 1999, on the list for the first time. “Today, I describe myself as an Irish Adejera, and am honoured to be asked join the Mayor Fraga team,” she told Canarian Weekly. “But, as with each and every candidate on the list, I’m not there just to represent one corner of Adeje’s population. We are all here together
to work for everyone in an integrated way. This party, this borough, respects the richness of diversity and the strength of unity.” The race for Mayor and Council seats in Arona is less clear. Current Mayor Francisco Nino was deselected by the CC, and its candidate, Miguel Angel Mendez, has some bridges to fix. In 2011, the CC polled 43% and had 13 councillors. Following the scandal over previous Mayor Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron and the poor job Nino did, Mendez has a real task on his hands. The PSOE candidate José Julián Mena, seen as having fresh ideas, has spoken of repairing the “neglect and abandonment of Arona at the hands of the CC”. If Mena gets in, it could lead to a thawing of relations between Arona and Adeje. To outsiders, it seems madness to have the important area of Las Americas and Los Cristianos controlled by separate mayors and town halls. If they can start working together properly, then real progress can be made. And when you throw in the fact that the PSOE is leading the race to win control of San Miguel, we could have political unity between the three southern Ayuntamientos. But a lot can change between now and 24th May!

PM salute for Senegal troops MARIANO Rajoy this week thanked military personnel deployed in Senegal to help the fight against terrorism and illegal immigration.
The Spanish Prime Minister visited two Guardia Civil patrol vessels, one Navy patrol vessel and an Air Force detachment in Dakar. Senegal. Rajoy began the day by meeting Senegal President Macky Sall, with whom he tackled relations between their countries, and their collaboration in the fight against terrorism, drug-trafficking and illegal immigration. The two leaders had previously met at Moncloa Palace on 15th December 2014, and in New York on 25th September 2012 during the United Nations General Assembly. Rajoy continued by visiting two Guardia Civil patrol vessels, 15 personnel responsible for monitoring the coast and avoiding the embarkation of small vessels to the Canary Islands, alongside Senegalese forces. Rajoy then visited the Navy vessel “Vencedora”, moored at Dakar naval base and entrusted with maritime security against threats such as illegal fishing, terrorist movements and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

Afterwards, Rajoy travelled to visit the Air Force detachment “Marfil”, comprising some 50 military personnel, who provide support for the mission in Mali, with one plane used for transporting troops and material to Senegal, Chad and Mali. No April showers here THERE was hardly any rainfall in the Canaries in April, with an average rainfall of 3.8 litres per square metre for the archipelago. That is barely onethird of the expected amount, which makes it the driest April since 1992, according to the met office AEMET (Agencia Española de Meteorología). However, despite the shortfall, the three days of rain was just one below the average
- and it’s not been cold. Thermal behaviour has, in general, been at a normal level, with average temperatures of 15.8ºC, one-fifth below the April average. It was actually a sunnier-than-normal month. With the exception of north Tenerife, the rest of the regions have enjoyed a surplus of sunshine, especially in the south and east areas of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and El Hierro.

If there is no stability or security, it is very difficult for other things to follow.” Rajoy stressed that the extraordinary European Council, held on 23rd April, acknowledged that the work being carried out by Spain in the fight against illegal immigration was “an example to follow”.

Workers’ boost Social Security SPAIN’S Social Security system now has 17 million contributors again, with an average of 17,008,296 people in work.
This figure was achieved through the affiliation of another 175,495 people last month (up 1.04%), which was the largest April increase
since records began. The number of contributors rose in all autonomous regions for the second straight month, under the key regimes and in the most representative sectors (both under the general regime and the selfemployed regime). And figures for hotel and catering industry, and trade, were particularly noteworthy. The seasonally-
adjusted figure (up 87,215) supports this positive trend, and the April improvement beat last year’s figure by a whopping 48,212. There have now been 21 straight months of growth. In year-on-year terms, the affiliation rate has maintained the same upward trend that began 15 months ago with an increase of 3.52%. This translates into an increase of
578,243, compared with 2014. Tomás Burgos, State Secretary for Social Security, said: “The system has recovered 855,000 workers in terms of average recorded affiliation since its all-time low in February 2013. “The progress in affiliation numbers this year to date is unprecedented in the last decade.”

THE British, the French, the Italians, the Dutch and the Swedish all have their own favourite holiday places and styles.
But one thing is for certain: most of them will spend their summer holidays on the Spanish coasts, including those of the Canary Islands.. Spain is still viewed by many as an exotic destination, despite its lengthy relationship with European holiday-makers for many years. A study conducted by consultancy YouGov asked 7,562 people in seven European countries where they were going on holiday this year. Of those interested in a European destination, Spain came up most often, with 25% of Brits giving it the nod, as did 28% of French, 17% of Germans, 16% of Swedes, 18% of Italians and 15% of the Dutch. By regions, the Canary Islands seem more attractive to tourists from the UK, Italy and Sweden, while Catalonia is the choice for French and German visitors. Miguel Mirones, President of the Institute for Quality Tourism in

Spain is tops for foreign holidays
Spain, said: “Spain’s success can be explained by several factors. Some of these are structural, such as the weather, but there is also the experience. “Europeans still view Spain as a very different destination from the rest of Europe - as a place with a particular lifestyle.” Adding to this are temporary issues, such as the strength of the dollar, which encourages Europeans to remain within the euro zone rather than
venture to America. And political instability in some emerging tourist destinations makes Spain more attractive because it is viewed as a safe country. The survey also shows that more Spanish and French take holidays at home than the others, and they have probably never left their countries. In fact, one in every 10 Spaniards has never spent
any holiday time abroad. Another trait that defines Spanish tourists is their preference for hotels. Over half of Spaniards would rather stay in one - the highest rate among all nationalities questioned in the survey, which was commissioned by apartment rental website Airbnb. But the French much prefer apartments. They represent the second-largest tourist group in Spain, even though 40% of them will stay
within their own borders this summer. Germans are mostly interested in the Balearic Islands, the Canaries and Andalusia, in that order. They also tend to spend their summer holidays abroad, especially the older ones. Some 36% of German pensioners will spend time outside their country this year, compared with 13% of retired Spaniards. Britons love to spend their summers on the Spanish coasts, and half of them choose their destination based on the weather. Industry Ministry figures show that 20% of tourists who come to Spain are British, their favourite regions being the Canaries, the Balearics and Andalusia. Some 98% of Dutch citizens have spent at least one summer outside their own country,
and at least 90% are planning to leave again this year. They are also the most likely to try different destinations: 71% said they would never go back to the same place twice. The Swedish topped the list of those who travel the most, with 59% saying they have three or more holidays a year. They also have a fondness for returning to the same places. Around 40% said they will return to where they went last year, and 97% have spent a summer abroad at least once. But Italian tourists are much like their Spanish counterparts in that they also do a lot of domestic travel, particularly in Sicily, Apulia and Sardinia. Those who do get out say they enjoy the variety, with 46% of them happy to try new things.

Spain’s jobless total is striking new record low THE number of people in Spain registered as jobless fell by 2.7% in April from a month earlier, which was the sharpest fall in that month on record. But one in four still remains unemployed.
Labour Ministry data this week showed that after 118,923 people secured jobs in April, some 4.33 million Spaniards remained on the out-of-work register. The first quarter unemployment rate, according to a survey by the National Statistics Institute (INE), stood at 23.8%. Jobless figures rose in January for the first time since October, marking the end of the busy Christmas season, though the numbers fell again in February and March. The April figure was down by 351,285 people, or 7.5%, from the same month last year. Joblessness fell most markedly in services, down 2.5%, or by 72,884 people. In the building sector, 19,449 fewer people were out of work, while unemployment fell by 11,555 in industry. The total number of people paying in to the social security system rose to 17 million
by the end of April up 175,495 people, or 1.04% from a month earlier, which was also the highest rise for a month of April on record. A fast-growing Spanish economy should create at least two million jobs by 2018 to cut the unemployment rate to about 15% according to the Spanish Government. The monthly jobless figures report the number of unemployed registered with the Labour Ministry, while INE quarterly data is compiled from a survey of the working population. Meanwhile, unemployment figures fell by 22,770 in the Canary Islands in April, against the same month last year, representing an 8.23% decrease and leaving 254 016 people still unemployed in the archipelago. In terms of monthly data, unemployment fell by 2,835 people in the Canaries, which resulted in a 1.10% fall. By provinces, the Las Palmas has a larger number of unemployed, (136 387), while in Tenerife, the Santa Cruz figure stands at 117 629 unemployed, a 2.08% decrease (2,498), while in Las Palmas the fall was 0.25% (-337). The number of jobless women in the Canaries (133,075) remained higher than men (120 941) in April.

The 59-year old singer was scheduled to play on Friday and Saturday (15th and 16th May). Joe, a regular visitor and performer in Tenerife, was looking forward to his now-regular gig here. He has been ill recently and has also had to cancel a number of shows in the UK. We all wish Joe a speedy recovery and hope to see him back performing in Tenerife before the end of the year. Morocco calling... BINTER Canarias has launched two direct connections between Tenerife and Morocco, which will start this summer.
The airline will fly direct to Marrakesh as usual in the summer months, and will also offer a new service into Agadir from 5th August. Juan Jose Gavilan, Binter’s commercial director, announced the new routes, along with Tenerife Cabildo chief Carlos Alonso. During the ceremony, both men stressed that Morocco had great potential for tourism and business for the Canaries, and they hope the build-up will create demand for these routes. The two flights, with 64 seats each, will operate once a week to begin with. The Tenerife-Agadir trip will take
place on Wednesdays, leaving the North airport at 11.15am and returning from Morocco the same day at 1.55pm local time. Tickets are now available, with a promotional price of around 110 euros each way for both Agadir and Marrakesh. Gavilan was especially pleased with the Agadir deal, saying: “This territory has grown and grown in the last 50 years. It has a highquality infrastructure, great weather and fine beaches. “It is very interesting and important in the business field. It has a lively harbour, lots of fishing activity and a consistent transportation of merchandise. “This shows the potential that Agadir has as a tourist destination, and as a business opportunity for the Canarian entrepreneur.”
Beach hit by sewage A SEWAGE spill was found on the Las Galletas beach last weekend, and officials believe the waste comes from a channel of rainwater that flows from behind the Tourist Information Office. At first glance, the area of the spill is covered with a green algae which indicates that the spill has been taking place for several weeks. Jose Fuentes, mayoral candidate for the political party CCN, said: “The foul smell comes from an area where people are trying to enjoy the beach. And the fact that this has occurred during a long weekend, when many people have visited the town, is no coincidence.” He added: “This is at such a serious level that a villager had to
cover the sewer rack with blankets as the odour impregnated his home, and his family were breathing in the fumes.” Fuentes is annoyed at a lack of action. Even though local police have filed a report, he is demanded they take action. “Those in charge are looking the other way when what should have been done is to close off the beach and ensure public health and safety in the bathing area,” he said. “The governing Coalición Canaria party must do something. There have been several weeks of sewage dumping into the sea. “We must take immediate action for the health of the people and the image this incident has on the Arona tourism.”

I’ll rest my bones in Tenerife, says bright star May
The editor says...

Celeb season THE weather is changing, and so is the Island. As the mercury rises, we say goodbye to the Swallows and hello to the younger visitor. You could hardly move this week for Stag and Hen parties. Last Saturday, I was cheering on my beloved Wolves in Leonardos when in walked a stag party of 30 lads. At this point it’s worth mentioning they were all Nottingham Forest fans and David, who owns Leos, is a staunch Derby County fan. Two hours later, Derby had their tummy tickled by Reading and had crashed out of the playoff places. Much to the enjoyment of the stag party. It must have been David’s worst nightmare. Apart from the pre-wedding posses, we are currently awash with celebrities. The rule is: “If it looks like a famous person, then it probably is.” Recently, England’s Rugby Union head coach Stuart Lancaster was staying in Golf del Sur, while former European
boxing champion Jamie Moore was hanging out with Ricky Hatton in Los Cristianos. Tour de France winner Chris Froome and his Sky team were training in the mountains while 2014 Britain’s Got Talent winners Collabro were soaking up the rays. Ditto, Hull legend Dean ‘woof woof’ Windass. At the moment, you will see five-time world darts champion Eric Bristow enjoying a pint or three in Los Cristianos. And keep an eye out for a footballer or 10. This week, Leeds United have been unwinding in Linekers Bar in Starco, and I understand they will be in tonight (Friday) as well. I’m told they have been behaving themselves, unlike a host of footballers who use to visit back in the day. I’ll never forget when Wimbledon were here in 1996. You don’t want to know about their infamous competition one afternoon. Let’s just say that shares in Andrex rocked afterwards!

LEGENDARY Queen guitarist Brian May describes Tenerife as “close to heaven”, so it is hardly any wonder that he has chosen the Island to be his final resting place. May, who knows Tenerife well through his association with Starmus and his role as an astrophysicist, says: “Teide National Park has a kind of pull on my spirit. It’s a feeling of being close to heaven up there in the national park, and it’s very spiritual to me. It’s probably where I would like my ashes to be scattered,” May, who wrote the words and music to Queen’s haunting Who Wants to Live Forever, was in reflective mood as he promoted the third Starmus Festival, which brings together astronauts, astronomers and space fans for a programme of presentations and partying, in Tenerife in 2016. May, 68 in July, is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock guitarist of all, and he is also a highly respected scientist. He first visited Tenerife in 1970 to work at the island’s Observatorio del Teide as part of his PhD studies. He has since visited the Island “many times” for family holidays and work. “The views of the cosmos up there [Observatorio del Teide] are amazing,” he said. “You get beautiful views of the Milky Way and the zodiacal light.” The phenomenon, best observed in spring and autumn, is caused by sunlight reflecting off space dust and was the subject of May’s Phd thesis. “I’ve also seen the gegenschein - a faint glow or spot in the night sky
associated with the zodiacal light - there, which is something not many astronomers have seen,” he added. “The atmosphere above Tenerife is very transparent and they have been very good at controlling the amount of light pollution, so it’s a wonderful place to look at the stars. “One of my ambitions is to walk up Mount Teide. I did it once when I was a student and I would love to be able to walk it again. “I’ve had a lot of trouble with my knees in recent years, but I’ve had a replacement knee now, so it would be great to able to do it.” he added. His desire to have his ashes scattered in Tenerife - not any time soon, hopefully - comes almost 24 years after the death of Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen. Despite Mercury’s enduring worldwide popularity the location of where he was laid to rest, after being cremated at Kensal Green Cemetery, in London, is a closelyguarded secret. But if May gets his wish, Tenerife could become a pilgrimage site for Queen fans in time. Brian, who also wrote the Queen song 39, about an astronaut who travels through space only to return to Earth 100 years later. He finds himself a victim of Einstein’s clock paradox, whereby he has aged just one year, but all of his loved ones are long dead. And he is also interested in travelling to space - the ultimate destination! “I would love to sit up there in the International Space Station in
tranquillity and look at the Earth from space,” he said. “What song would I play? They say there’s no atmosphere - I suppose it would have to be 39 or I Want It All. But I don’t know if it will ever happen because I’m getting a little old for that now.” Professor Stephen Hawking, the theoretical physicist who was a huge hit at last year’s Starmus, was subject of the recent The Theory of Everything film, starring Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne. And the professor was also at London’s Royal Astronomical Society, alongside May, to announce details of the 2016 Starmus Festival. The theme, Beyond the Horizon - Tribute to Stephen Hawking, will obviously be focused on the great man himself. And, needless to say, he will play a major role in the star-studded event. Other notable speakers appearing at Starmus 2016 include astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield, best known for his YouT u b e rendition o f
David Bowie’s Space Oddity, performed onboard the International Space Station, and Lord Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal. The festival will culminate with the Teide Starmus Party, set within the other-worldly landscape of Teide National Park, with May and Rick Wakeman among those performing. Peter Gabriel, former Genesis frontman and a member of the Starmus Festival Advisory Board, said: “Humans are myopic apes with a very overblown sense of their own importance. “But there are few things better than lying down on the ground on a warm, clear, summer night and looking up at a star-filled sky to expand and explode a sense of who we are and where we really belong in the big picture.” He added: “Musicians explore and define what exists inside us, astronomers explore and define what exists outside of us, and that’s what I love about Starmus,” The 2016 Starmus Festival runs from 27th June to July 2, and for more information and to book, see: starmus.com.

Adeje’s traditional spree
ADEJE Council’s Department of Culture has arranged a host of activities during May labelled “Adeje vive las tradiciones” (Adeje, bringing traditions to life).
The Cultural Centre features a de-
lightful exhibition of work “Cuéntame un cuento” (Tell me a story), from the San Juan centre until next Friday (15th May,) which the kids will certainly enjoy. Tonight (Friday), for eight euros, the public can enjoy Arabian Nights - an evening of dance, acrobatics, magic and music, also in the Cultural Centre, at
8.30pm. The 15th Adeje Arts and Craft fair takes place next Saturday and Sunday (16-17th May) in the Plaza de España with a range of stalls selling hand-crafted goods, folklore performances, food stalls, etc. The food theme continues on 20th May with a dessert workshop making “chasnera”
cakes (with almonds), in the CDTCA. Then, on 28th May, there will be a series of health-inducing events, with solidarity pilates, massages and a zumba class, all taking place in the Cultural Centre, with monies going to local charitable causes. The month finishes with a fun event: the Baile de Magos, or tra-
ditional Canarian costume dance, will be staged in the Plaza de España on 29th May just one day ahead of Canaries Day. You must dress traditionally to take part, but entry is free, and this is a lovely evening for all the family. Book a table with the Department of Culture if you are interested. On Canaries Day itself
(30th May), La Caleta hosts the II Festival Imoque, with performances by Los Cebolleros, from Galdar, and el Zumacal from Gran Canaria - with Alba Pérez and José Manuel Ramos. The month ends with a Canaries Day concert on 31st May at 11.30am in the Plaza de San Sebastián, La Caleta, featuring the Adeje Municipal Band.

Spain’s economy soaring THE Spanish economy has moved up another notch in the first three months of the year, to the delight of the Government.
A snap estimate by the National Statistics Institute (INE) showed the gross domestic product (GDP) grew
0.9% between January and March. It represents the biggest upsurge since late 2007, when the greatest crisis in 50 years was about to hit Spain. The figure will be confirmed in a month, but it mirrors another estimate made in April by the Bank of Spain, which talked about 0.8% growth for the first quarter, compared with the last three months
of 2014. The new data means the Spanish economy has been expanding for nearly two years, after two back-toback recessions in the five previous years. Year-on-year, output has advanced at a rate of 2.6%. This, and improving confidence in the Spanish economy, has led the Government to revise its 2015 growth forecast upwards from 2% to 2.9%.
It is even more optimistic than the EU’s 2.3% growth prediction, and the (IMF)International Monetary Fund’s forecast of 2.5% growth for Spain. Last year, the Spanish economy grew 1.4% after five years in recession. While the INE did not provide details about what has fuelled this first-quarter growth, other statistics point to greater domestic con-
Wine producer adds a big sparkle to growth SPANISH wine producer Felix Solis Avantis has launched a 40meuro plan to join the top three largest wineries in the world.
The investment largely covers the introduction of technologies, automation and additional air-conditioned production and storage capacity at its Valdepenas plant, to facilitate the making of new, sparkling
wines. Felix Solis Ramos, international director of Felix Solis Avantis, said the first new brands - to be called Provetto and Penasol - will made from Viura and Airen grape varieties, using the Charmat or tank method. He hopes the sparkling newcomers will make up around half the increase in the production of wine, resulting from the new investment. He said the company’s annual production will jump
50% from 200m litres to 300m litres - some 400 million bottles a year - by the end of next year. “We have already started to produce sparkling wines and other products to meet consumer demand for low-alcohol, fruitier wines with bubbles - distinct from traditional wines,” said Mr Solis Ramos. “We hope to make 24m bottles of sparkling wine each year.” The family of Felix Solis Avantis known for its
red Vina Albali, started making wine in 1952, and the company now exports to 110 countries. This month, Felix Solis Avantis launched Frissé, a low-alcohol, sparkling Sangria. And it will also be launching new red, rosé and white still wines. The company said its profits would fund the investment plan that includes a 4m-euro revamp of its wine-bottling and production facility in Shanghai.
sumption as the main driving force, pushed on by improved financing conditions and lower prices. The BBVA, in this an analysis published this week, highlighted “the slowdown in retail sales growth” but noted “the favourable evolution of other indicators of household spending,
such as vehicle registration”. As well as consumers, the state is also spending more again, to the tune of 20% of GDP. This increased public spending in Election Year is also reflected in the latest employment figures, with construction contributing the greatest number of jobs.

Researchers argue that if the water system contained as much bacteria as the average beard, it would be closed down to be disinfected. The original research was based on segments from a TV news network in New Mexico, which involved a reporter swabbing a group of men’s beards for testing in a lab. Microbiologist John Golobic, from Quest Diagnostics, discovered enteric bacteria, which are usually found living in the intestines. “Those are the types of things you’d find in faeces,” he said. “I’m usually not surprised, and I was surprised by this.” But experts say the results may have been misinterpreted. The Guardian’s Nick Eversheds said: “While it’s true that h u m a n faeces a r e
partially composed of gut bacteria, it’s not accurate to describe those bacteria on their own as faeces.” Carol Walker, a consultant trichologist from the Birmingham Trichology Centre, says having facial hair can lead to more frequent skin infections, and to germs being passed on to others. “Beards harbour more germs because facial hair is courser than other hair, so it traps dirt and germs more easily,” she said. “Beard hair is courser. It has the shape of a bayonet, a round, convexed bottom and then comes up the side to a point. It becomes curly and smooth and tends to have more bends and kinks, which trap dirt.” She added. “The cuticles on the hair, which are like layers of tiles on a roof, trap the germs and grease. Hair around nostrils and mouth is well-placed to harbour bacteria.” There is also the possibility that a bearded person will pass the bacteria living on their
whiskers to other people. Mrs Walker said: “If you’re affectionate with someone, if you kiss them, you can pass on bacteria.” Professor Hugh Pennington, an emeritus professor of bacteriology at the University of Aberdeen, said: “It’s the same bacteria that’s on your skin. It’s not problematic and it’s not a health risk.” But Professor Anthony Hilton, head of biological and biomedical sciences at Aston University, said research has confirmed that beards can spread bacteria, adding: “But so can clean-shaven faces!” The study, published in the Anaesthesia journal, looked at whether surgical masks caught bacteria falling from surgeons’ faces, and whether having a beard affected how many bacteria fell. “What they found was that men with beards do harbour a significant number of bacteria - more than non-bearded men and women,” said Prof Hilton. “And bearded surgeons wearing masks did shed more organisms from the beard outwards when they wiggled.” But he added that while there is evidence of beards being filled with bugs, there is no proof that this leads to health problems. “It’s not u n c o m mon to find 20,000 bacteria on the s k i n , a n d t h i s i s n’ t harmful,” he said. B u t the scientific world remains divided about how filthy beards can get.

WOMEN in the UK are more than twice as likely to die in pregnancy and childbirth as those in Poland, Austria or Belarus.
That’s the staggering fact to emerge from Save the Children’s annual list. For the third year running, the UK failed to make the top 10 of the charity’s State of the World’s Mothers’ report. Britain actually finished 24th, up two places from last year, in the list of the world’s best places to be a mother. A child born in the UK is also more than twice as likely to die before the age of five as in Iceland or Luxembourg. The UK has a child mortality rate of 4.6 per 1,000 births, while Iceland’s rate is 2.1 and Luxembourg’s 2.0 per 1,000 births. Britain, which has not made the top 10 since 2012, also came behind debt-stricken Greece as well as Spain, Slovenia and Israel. Norway topped the list, with Finland and Iceland second and third respectively. The US is

behind the UK in 33rd place. The report found that women in the US have a one-in-1,800 lifetime risk of maternal death, which was the worst performance of any developed country in the world. In a ranking of child survival in 25 capital cities in the world’s wealthiest countries, Washington DC came last. The next worst were Vienna in Austria and Bern, in Switzerland. Somalia remained in the bottom spot for the second year running. In fact, all but two of the 11 bottom-ranked countries in the world are in west and central Africa. The 2015 report found that women in the UK face a one-in-6,900 lifetime risk of maternal death. In Poland, the figure was much lower at one-in-19,800, while in Austria it was one-in-19,200 and onein-45,200 in Belarus. Obesity, IVF, social
deprivation, multiple pregnancies, as well as increased maternal age and poorer access to healthcare, especially in some ethnic minority communities and among asylum seekers, are linked with high-risk pregnancies in the UK. Jasmine Whitbread, Save the Children International’s chief executive, said: “We urgently need to close the gap in life chances for mothers and children so that no matter where they live, they all have a fair chance to survive and fulfil their potential.” The Save the Children report, which, among other sources, uses data from UN agencies, ranks countries on five key factors: risk of maternal death, under-five mortality rate, educational status, economic achievement and political status. It also looks at the maternal and child health gap between rich and
poor living in some of the world’s major cities. “For the first time in history, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas,” said Ms Whitbread. “People are often drawn to cities by the prospect of a better life for their children. “But many cities around the world are unable to keep up with breakneck growth, leaving hundreds of millions of mothers and children in cities without access to essential health services - and the clean water they need to survive and stay healthy.” The report found that although some countries were successful in saving more mothers and their children, the survivalrate gap between rich and poor was vast. The 10 countries showing the greatest survival divide between wealthy and poor urban children were Rwanda, Kenya and Malawi, where survival gaps have roughly
doubled, as well as Cambodia, Vietnam, Peru, India, Madagascar, Ghana, Bangladesh and Nigeria. However, a number of cities are increasing survival rates for even the poorest mothers and children, including Kampala (Uganda), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia); Cairo (Egypt); Guatemala City (Guatemala); Manila (the Philippines); and Phnom Penh (Cambodia). “If the world’s going to complete the task of ending preventable child and maternal deaths, we have to find better ways of getting healthcare to urban populations, regardless of income,” said Ms Whitbread.
“For babies born in many of the world’s fastgrowing cities, it is survival of the richest.”

Beware of those deadly diet pills INTERPOL has issued a global warning over deadly diet pills, which are believed to contain a highly-toxic industrial chemical.
They are said to be responsible for the death of a British woman, and leaving a French man seriously ill. Eloise Parry, just 21when she took the 2.4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) pills, died on 12th April at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. She is understood, inadvertently, to have taken an overdose after buying the pills online. Police in 190 countries have been issued with the Orange Notice warning about DNP, which is also used as a raw material for explosives. It was sent out following a request by the French Government, following tests being carried out on a sub-
stance at a World AntiDoping Agency laboratory in Australia. An Interpol statement said: “Although usually sold in yellow powder or capsule form, DNP is also available as a cream. “Besides the intrinsic dangers of DNP, the risks associated with its use are magnified by illegal manufacturing conditions. “In addition to being produced in clandestine laboratories with no hygiene regulations, without specialist manufacturing knowledge, the producers also expose consumers to an increased chance of overdose.” Police issued an appeal to the public not
to buy pharmaceuticals online after Ms Parry’s death. Chief Inspector Jennifer Mattinson said: “We are undoubtedly concerned over the origin and sale of these pills, and we are working with partner agencies to establish where they were bought from, and how they were advertised. “The coroner’s report will establish the exact cause of Eloise’s death, but we urge the public to be incredibly careful when purchasing medicine or supplements over the internet. “Substances from unregistered websites could put your health at risk as they could be extremely harmful, outof-date or fake.”
Arctic Ocean PROFOUND changes in the Arctic Ocean have persuaded Norwegian scientists that the region is entering a “ new era”.
And they feel that a switch from a permanent cover of thick ice to a new state, in which thinner ice vanishes in the summer, will have far-reaching implications. The Norwegian Polar Institute has been mounting an expedition to the Arctic Ocean during the year’s coldest months, in which scientists brave extreme temperatures and total darkness. Their aim is to gather data on the condition of the ice as it freezes during the polar winter. Research vessel the Lance has been deployed to an area about 500 miles from the North Pole and allowed to drift with the pack-ice. Institute director JanGunnar Winther said
that measuring what happened in the winter was vital to improving scenarios for future climate change. The expedition’s major focus is to examine the consequences of having not so much socalled multi-year ice and a greater proportion of younger ice “We have almost no data from the Arctic Ocean in winter - with few exceptions - so this information is very important to be able un-
derstand the processes when the ice is freezing in early winter,” said Winther. “And we’ll also stay here when it melts in the summer. “A new era has entered, we are going from old ice to young ice, thinner ice, and the climate models used today have not captured this new regime or ice situation. “So knowing how it is today can improve climate models, which again improve the projection for global climate

cean’s new Ice Age change.” The research comes as US scientists have reported that the maximum extent of Arctic sea-ice was recorded at its lowest winter level since satellite records began. Among the researchers investigating the impact of this change on the polar biology is Dr Haakon Hop, who is leading a team of biologists working under the ice. “Typically, there’s much less life underneath first-
year ice,” he said. “Multiyear ice is more complex, with more ridging and, typically, has more animal life. “So what has been seen around the Arctic is these animals who live underneath the ice - crustaceans, amphipods, and copepods. The bio-diversity has gone down and their abundance and biomass have also gone down in the areas which have been
measured. “That is a very serious concern because these animals are important prey items for sea birds feeding on the ice edge, and for the marine animals that feed on them.” Another biologist on the expedition, Dr Philipp Assmy, said it was important to understand how some species might benefit from the ocean having less ice cover because
more sunlight would allow plankton to flourish - while others would suffer. “We know the organisms living in the ocean will actually increase because there will be more light available for them to grow,” nhe said. “On the other hand, the organisms living within the sea-ice are likely going to decline as their habitat deteriorates, and that will have cascading effects on the large, charismatic, marine mammals we are all familiar with.” The expedition is attempting to provide a comprehensive assessment of all key aspects of this part of the Arctic Ocean. Dr Polona Itkin has been deploying tracking devices on the ice-floes so that the movement and thinning of the ice can be observed after the expedition ends next month. “We would like to understand how the sea ice cover in this part of the Arctic is behaving in, let’s call it, the new climate,” he said.
“We know something about this ice, which has been studied over decades, but we now think the ice is different. We would like to see how different, and what it means for other components of the climate.” The scientists say that data gathered from the ice itself is invaluable as a way of calibrating measurements taken by satellites and overflights. But the work comes with risks. One is the sheer struggle of operating in freezing conditions. The temperature falls regularly to -21C, with the wind lowering the feel of the cold to -47C. Another threat is from polar bears. In the darkness of the polar winter, Dr Jennifer King was in a small group working under the Lance’s floodlights when a bear guard suddenly spotted one of the animals emerging into the light. “It was 25m away, standing up on ridge looking at us, looking like a majestic king of the Arctic,” she said. It
was very beautiful but the heart stops.” The bear was scared away with flare guns. A further danger is from the pack-ice mobility. During the expedition, while scientists have been deployed on the ice, cracks or “leads” have frequently appeared in the surface, or floes have collided, creating pressure ridges. Several times, equipment was winched back from the ice to avoid the risk of it being lost. And once, one floe was being forced above another, and expedition members were called back to the ship for their own safety. According to JanGunnar Winther, the younger ice more prevalent in the Arctic now is also more mobile. “We know that the icedrift is faster now than it was 100 years ago,” he said. “So with thinner ice and less ice, it’s more moved around by the wind and the weather. It’s more dynamic now, and we know that.”

Crime-writing queen takes final bow at 85 MAJOR crime writer Ruth Rendell, who produced more than 60 novels in a 50year career, has died at the age of 85.
Her best-known creation was Inspector Wexford, which became a highly-successful TV series. She was one of Britain’s best-selling contemporary authors, also writing under the pen-name Barbara Vine. Ruth, born in South Woodford, Essex, is credited with bringing a social and psychological dimension to crime fiction. Publisher Penguin Random House said the writer, who suffered a stroke in January, died in London on Saturday. “We are devastated by the loss of one of our best-loved authors,” said the publisher in a statement. Baroness Gail Rebuck, Penguin Random House chair, said Ruth was admired throughout publishing for her “brilliant body of work”. She added: “She was an insightful and elegant observer of society, and many of her award-winning thrillers and psychological murder mysteries highlighted the causes she cared so deeply
about.” Her first Wexford book, From Doon with Death, published in 1964, began a series of more than 20 starring Inspector Reginald Wexford, who was played in the TV series by George Baker. Many of her works were translated into more than 20 languages and adapted for cinema and TV, attracting worldwide sales of 60 million. She was the author of more than 20 standa l o n e nov-
els, whose protagonists were often on the margins of society. And she was awarded the Crime Writers’ Association Cartier Diamond Dagger for crime-writing excellence. Her final novel, Dark Corners, is set to be published in October. Ruth began her writing career as a reporter on the Chigwell Times, a local newspaper near her home. However, she was forced to resign after filing a story about a sports club dinner she hadn’t attended. Her report failed to mention that the after-dinner speaker had died halfway through the speech. She jumped before she was pushed! Ruth, whose writing brought her wealth by the millions, was made a Labour life peer in 1997 and she is reputed to have given generously to charity - up to £100,000 a year. She was also a vocal campaigner against female genital mutilation. She was born Ruth Barbara Grasemann in 1930 to a Swedish mother and British father. Ruth married Don Rendell, a journalist (on the nearby Stratford Express newspaper), in 1953. They divorced 22 years later but remarried each other within two years. But Don died of prostate cancer in 1999 and she is survived by her only son, Simon, who lives in Denver, Colorado.
The humour of Mark Twain
A SERIES of letters written by Mark Twain when he was a young journalist in San Francisco has been pieced together by researchers in California. Twain, who wrote the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, compared the city’s police chief to a dog chasing its tail in them, and accused the city government of “rascality”. Bob Hirst, general editor of the Mark Twain Project at the University of California, Berkeley, said: “This is a very special period in his life, when he’s out here in San Francisco. “He’s utterly free, he’s not encumbered by a marriage or much of anything else, and he can speak his mind - and does speak his mind.
The ones that survived are wonderful to read.” Twain was thought to be 29 when he began filing near-daily columns for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City, Nevada, in 1865. He wrote a 2,000-word story or “letter” six days a week for a salary of 100 dollars a month. Many of the letters were lost in fires, but researchers have trawled through the archives of other Western US newspapers to get copies of around 110 columns, written in 1865 and 1866. In one letter, Twain gives a detailed dialogue between two gold speculators trapped in a shift. The men were clinging to a rope, tied to an old horse called Cotton.
He wrote: “Johnny, I’ve not lived as I ought to have lived. Damn that infernal horse! “Johnny, if we are saved, I mean to be a good man and a Christian.” Twain was struggling with his career when the letters were written, and was unsure if writing humorously counted as literature, said Mr Hirst. Last year, plans to name a cove on Lake Tahoe after the celebrated American author were scrapped after a Native American tribe said he held racist views. The author, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835, grew up in Hannibal, Missouri. He died in 1910.
Police swoop on Chinese people-trafficking gang AN 80-strong gang, accused of charging Chinese migrants 20,000 euros each to traffick them to Europe and North America, have been rounded up by Spanish police. The Chinese-run gang used houses in the Barcelona area as stopover bases, hiding the migrants there while they waited to be trafficked on to Britain, Ireland, Canada and the US. They arranged flights for the migrants, via Chinese travel agencies in Spain, and provided them with fake passports, said police. “They charged on average 20,000 euros for each
person trafficked, and made serious threats against their families if they did not pay.” The police said the socalled gang leaders were among those arrested. And one of the accused travelled around the world using at least 14 identities to avoid suspicion. Officers caught more than 70 migrants with fake passports as they tried to take flights from Spanish airports, bound for the various trafficking destinations. Police also nabbed 80 other people on suspicion of offences related to the trafficking gang. They seized more than 100 fake passports, immi-
gration rubber-stamps, mobile phones and cash. They said the case shed light on relations between various branches of the Chinese mafia in Spain. A spokesman said: “The investigations revealed links between the criminal organisation that has been broken up and other illegal Chinese organisations based in Spain, involved in extortion and scoresettling.” More than 191,000 Chinese nationals are registered as living in Spain, according to the NSI (National Statistics Institute). Many of them run shops and wholesale businesses.

HANDS up if you still own a property in the UK but have residential status in Tenerife or, indeed, anywhere in the world?
If you’re one of many thousands of expats who decided to keep a foothold in the UK property market “just in case”, potentially, you may well be out of pocket when you decide it´s time to sell. This is yet another one of the latest steps in a series of significant changes affecting the taxation of UK residential property in recent years. Until 6th April this year, non-UK residents had always enjoyed being exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on private residences, and
8th May - 14th May 2015
No more tax exemptions they also had the right to claim Private Resident Relief. Regrettably for many, this is no longer an option because the rules have now changed and CGT has been extended to non-UK residents, with effect from 6th April. For individuals, the rate of tax on any gains made will be 18% or 28%, depending on your UK income, and also the sum of any gain on sale of the property. But CGT will also apply only to gains made from 6th April 2015. In calculating the gain on property disposal, non-UK resident property owners will substitute the value of the property from that date for its actual acquisition cost and, thereby, rebasing the price to its current market value. For many, this can limit the charge levied. For example, if you purchased a residential
property in 2005 at a cost of £40,000 and the valuation on 6th April was £150,000, the market value then will be used as the base, and not the actual cost of purchase. If the property were then sold in 2020 for £175,000, the actual gains (minus, of course, any disposal costs and/ or enhancement costs) would be less than £25,000. Non-resident indi-
viduals will still be entitled to the same annual exemption as UK residents - £11,100 in 2015/16. Assuming you no longer have taxable UK income, CGT will fall within the 18% CGT charge. You may, however, still be eligible to claim private resident relief because HMRC will apply the 90-day rule. Therefore if you, as owner, have spent at least 90 midnights in
the property in any given tax year, and have not let the property out, and nor have you had long periods of absence, or used the property for business purposes, you may still be able to claim Private Resident Relief by stating that your UK residential property is still your main home. If you have become a resident of Spain during the last year, it may be worth considering whether selling your private residence in the UK in the next 12 months would be preferable to paying any future CGT. Property owners in the UK are advised to get a valuation now! It may be sufficient to obtain more than one valuation from local estate agents. But a valuation obtained from a professional surveyor will provide evidence to support the figure used as the rebased value on eventual disposal. From this point for-
ward, a return which includes the value (on 6th April), as well as the sale price, will be required to enable HMRC to calculate tax, even in cases where there is no chargeable gain. Britain’s Greatest Generation BBC2, 21:00
Documentary that tells the stories of the extraordinary last survivors of the generation who fought or lived through World War II. Now in their nineties and hundreds - the oldest is 110 - they come from both rich and poor backgrounds. We find out how these men and women were shaped by their childhood experiences. For no generation of Britons in modern history has war been such a defining feature than in the lives of those born just before, during, or soon after the First World War. When war broke out in September 1939, the men and women of this generation had just come of age and were ready to risk their lives for their country. But the evacuation of the British Army from the beaches of Dunkirk was a wake-up call for those who expected a swift victory. By the summer of 1940, Britain stood alone, with the Nazis massed across the Channel.

BBC Young Dancer 2015 BBC2, 19:00
Zoe Ball and Darcey Bussell host the first ever grand final of BBC Young Dancer. Following two preliminary rounds and the four category finals, six dancers are through to the final at Sadler’s Wells in London. As part of their performance in the grand final, each dancer will premiere a brand new solo created for them by some of the UK’s leading choreographers, alongside a solo from their repertoire and a pas de deux, or in the case of hip hop a battle. At the end of the grand final, one will be named BBC Young Dancer 2015. The grand final is judged by a formidable panel of dance experts: artistic director of New Adventures, choreographer and director Matthew Bourne; artistic director of ZFin Malta dance ensemble Mavin Khoo; choreographer and director Wayne McGregor; English National Ballet artistic director Tamara Rojo; dancer and choreographer Kenrick Sandy; and Alistair Spalding, chief executive and artistic director of Sadler’s Wells.

Hunters Of The South Seas: The Kula Ring
8th May - 14th May 2015
S u nday
BBC2, 20.00 Will travels to the Coral Triangle’s remotest corner to learn how people have thrived in spite of their extreme
isolation. The Trobriand Islands, a group of tiny atolls found 150 miles off the east coast of Papua New Guinea, are part of a complex trading network called The Kula Ring. Kula is an ancient practice that sees men set off in canoes, travelling across the open ocean to exchange highly-prized shell armbands with partners on neighboring islands. For centuries it has provided a connection between remote village communities, opening the way for further trade that has been vital to their survival. Will arrives on the largest island, Kiriwina, to find out whether Kula still plays a role in the 21st century. His hosts Edric and Nagiya, two islanders with long Kula histories, are passionate about Kula’s importance on the island. For Will it becomes clear that a new currency has taken over, with the region now on the cruise ship circuit and 2,000 Australian tourists eagerly turning up to buy souvenirs. But as Nagiya and Edric set off on an ambitious expedition, travelling across the high seas in a tiny sail canoe, Will sees that Kula is not dead. Journeying to truly remote islands introduces Will to the ancient customs of the region including funeral rites, feasts and fishing traditions which have remained untouched by modern tourism. Only when they get to the tiny outcrop of Iwa, can Will finally see Kula in action witnessing both Nagiya and Edric fulfill their long-held ambitions.

The isolated village couldn’t feel further away from the impending bloodshed and battlefields and yet it is not immune from the effects of war. As the conflict takes hold, and separates the women from their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers, the characters find themselves under increasing and extraordinary pressures in a rapidly fragmenting world. By banding together as the Great Paxford Women’s Institute, they help maintain the nation’s fabric in its darkest hour, and discover inner resources that will change their lives forever. Acclaimed British actresses Francesca Annis and Samantha Bond lead an impressive ensemble cast including Ruth Gemmell (Utopia), Mark Bonnar (Line of Duty), Claire Rushbrook (Collision), Mark Bazeley (The Suspicions of Mr Whicher), Frances Grey (The Widower) and Ed Stoppard (Cilla).

Wellington: The Iron Duke Unmasked BBC2, 21:00
Two-part drama documentary series. The Duke of Wellington was the most famous Briton of the first half of the 19th century, and his victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815 altered the course of history. The Iron Duke became a towering figure in British history for both his achievements and for embodying our notions of Britishness - the stiff upper lip, unfussy straightforwardness and incorruptibility in office. This series looks behind the iron mask to focus on the intriguing complexities of the Duke of Wellington - his character, personality and relationships, told through his own words and the words of those who knew him best. General, politician, lover, outsider - the hero of Waterloo was far more complex than his public image.

The Great Chelsea Garden Challenge
8th May - 14th May 2015
M onday
BBC2, 20.00
The Great Chelsea Garden Challenge 2015, presented by Joe Swift (Gardeners’ World) will see six amateurs designers compete to win the biggest prize in gardening - to design and build a garden on Main Avenue at the RHS Chelsea Flower show in 2015. The competition starts at RHS Harlow Carr in Harrogate, where the designers are given four days, a 3x4m plot and a limited budget to create a show garden in the Cottage Garden style - a mini Chelsea. They are sent to a local wholesale nursery to source their plants and are helped and mentored throughout the process by Joe, who won a gold medal at Chelsea in 2012. The finished gardens are judged by RHS judge James Alexander Sinclair and Chelsea Gold Medal winning designer Ann-Marie Powell. The best designer and garden is awarded gold and one designer is sent home. In this episode the amateurs come to grips with the difference between show gardens, which have to look stunning on the day of judging, and domestic gardens, which they are more used to. Just who will judge the right amount of plants they need and the right combinations, and finish in time for the judges?
Safe House ITV1, 21.00 The investigation into Michael Collersdale (Peter Ferdinando) takes an unexpected turn and Robert (Christopher Eccleston) has worrying news for David (Jason Merrells) and Ali (Nicola Stephenson) Blackwell. Meanwhile Sam Blackwell (James Burrows) and his younger brother Joe (Max True) decide to head off across the lake and are caught up in a terrifying ordeal. Robert and Mark (Paterson Joseph) work to resolve the situation but when events dramatically spiral it has serious consequences for both the family and Robert as he finds himself in direct opposition to Mark.

Benefits Street Channel 4, 21:00
One of the most controversial and talked-about documentary series of recent years returns for a second run. Last year the first series of Benefits Street, filmed on James Turner Street in Birmingham, sparked a political and media debate about poverty and welfare, with one of the street’s residents, ‘White Dee’, becoming a national figure.
The Night Bus Channel 4, 22:00
London has increasingly become a 24-hour city, and on the weekends there are now 2000 night buses winding their way through the city’s streets. More than just a way of getting from A to B, the night bus is often the start of the party and one of the few places in London where it’s still OK to talk to strangers. It’s a place to hang out, to make new friends and to get things off your chest: a microcosm of life in the capital.

Wastemen BBC2, 21:00
Observational documentary series. As a nation we throw away more than ever. And with increasing landfill taxes and concerns over the environment, burying it all in a hole in the ground is no longer an option. Bigger and better solutions to our waste problems are needed and Newcastle and the Northeast are helping to lead the way. Giant incinerators turn rubbish into electricity, industrial plants turn waste into compost and machines the size of jumbo jets shred old cars into fragments of metal that are sold around the world and reused. A new future for our rubbish is coming.

No Offence Channel 4, 21:00
Joanna Scanlan, Elaine Cassidy and Alexandra Roach lead the unorthodox crack team of cops at the heart of Paul Abbott’s No Offence - an outrageous new police procedural series from the writer of Shameless and State of Play. Will Mellor, Paul Ritter and Colin Salmon, join them in the mix of tough but bighearted bobbies who go above and beyond to bring down the criminal rabble in a crumbling cop shop. In episode two, Deering and her team lose the serial killer case to Maclaren’s team, after Dinah becomes personally involved with Cathy Calvert, the girl who survived the attack. As recriminations fly, the cops see a chance to redeem themselves when a dangerous new street drug has the locals dropping like flies.

Matthew discovers an abandoned baby and desperately tries to track down the mother before the authorities are called in – or Luke finds out. Lisa plays agony aunt and Pat creates some startling artwork. Newly qualified midwife Matthew Bunting (Darren Boyd) is experiencing a kind of re-birth, having given up his life as a police constable in his mid 30s in the hope of finding something more meaningful. He is too warm and caring to be a cop. Arriving in his first job as a junior midwife at Easthill Park Maternity Unit, Matthew makes an instant impact on his new team members. They are led by recently divorced senior midwife Caitlin (Fay Ripley), witty and likeable junior midwife Lisa (Aisling Bea), the extremely nononsense senior midwife Pat (Llewella Gideon) and naïve trouble-maker Tash (Jennie Jacques). Matthew has company from his former police buddy Ian (Paddy McGuinness) who gets suspended from the force and lands a job in hospital security, while his nemesis comes in the shape of senior consultant obstetrician Luke Edward (Alex Macqueen). The team have to contend with teenage parents, a ‘double dad’ who has two partners in labour, a pregnant prisoner on release, an incognito celebrity, a major theft from the drugs cupboard and an abandoned baby.

Rory Bremner’s Election Report BBC2, 22:00
Featuring Rory Bremner, John Bird, Matt Forde, Sara Pascoe and a light scattering of guest stars, this half-hour special is a follow up to Rory’s Coalition Report broadcast earlier this year. We peek inside Westminster to see the mandarins at work during the political break, look ahead to election night 2020 and learn how a house brick may be the answer to all our political worries. Filmed just before transmission in Manchester, Rory Bremner’s Election Report offers a chance to hear about the political scene that we’re not being told about. Who really governs the country? Can the election bring real change? And most important of all, who was Nick Clegg? Lively, informed, irreverent and timely, the Election Report offers the antidote to a diet of traditional political programmes.

Fraud Squad ITV1, 21.00 “They think they are beyond the law. They think they are untouchable. They have no consideration for the victims that they have already had, all they are interested in is stealing more money while they can. This is their last hurrah.” - Commander Steve Head, City of
London Police This returning factual series for ITV reveals how fraudsters are cooking up ingenious new crimes to steal millions from victims’ bank accounts. Fraud Squad is produced by Wild Pictures, the company behind hardhitting ITV documentaries including Brady and Hindley: Possession and Her Majesty’s Prison: Aylesbury. It reveals how fraud is now the fastest growing crime in Britain, costing taxpayers an estimated £50 billion a year. With unique access to the City of London Police, the national lead force on fraud, the three parts of this observational series follow detectives as they conduct investigations into the theft of millions of pounds from the first 999 call through to the convictions in court. The first programme in the series shows how organised criminals have stepped into Britain’s property market, buying sites situated on flood zones and in areas contaminated by industrial waste and selling them to unknowing victims as prime residential land for thousands more than its true value. The second and third episodes see detectives from the City of London and Metropolitan forces pursue a gang behind the biggest ever bank cheque fraud in Britain, worth over £6.5 million. The gang has mastered the art of counterfeiting cheques, which enables them to steal millions from businesses, charities and private account holders across Britain.

W1A BBC2, 22.00 It’s all change on the corporate merry-go-round. In his new role as Senior Executive, Primetime Factuality, consistently lucky David Wilkes needs to flesh out the programme idea behind One Big Family. Not having any ideas himself he turns for inspiration to Izzy Gould in her new role as development producer. On the verge of leaving the BBC, Lucy has been persuaded to take on a new job as Head of Inclusivity. One of her first jobs is to head up discussions on the Way Ahead Task Force around inclusivity targets - targets which become increasingly important to hit with Charter renewal just around the corner and an imminent meeting of the Cross Parliamentary Cultural Inclusion Action Watch Dog Group at Westminster. Enter fearless Siobhan Sharpe whose idea of viralizing Muslim BBC Weather presenter Sadiq Iqbal (pictured) looks like keeping the watchdogs happy. But Sadiq seems more interested in his colleague News Anchor Azia Zamani than in becoming a national icon. As ever it’s down to Head of Values Ian Fletcher to try and steer the BBC ship through increasingly choppy waters.

By Jamie Droo EVERYONE loves a cover version, a new interpretation of a modern classic. Every night in every Tenerife entertainment bar, you hear them! And that’s what karaoke is!
There was a major survey in the UK recently, when the BBC asked: “What is the greatest cover version of all time?” Surprisingly, the The Pet Shop Boys’ Always On My Mind was given the nod and made the top spot. The song, written by John Christopher, Mark James and Wayne Carson, was first recorded by Brenda Lee and, of course, everyone remembers Elvis Presley’s 1972 version. The Pet Shop Boys reached No.1 in the UK and No.4 in the US with the track in 1987, and country legend Willie Nelson also won a Grammy for his version in 1982. Maybe it’s the song rather than the version which makes it so popular because the PSB version, good as it is, cannot not the greatest ever, surely! According to the BBC poll, the brilliant Johnny Cash cover of Nine Inch Nails’ Hurt was second, followed by The Stranglers’ version of Dionne Warwick’s Walk On By. The Jimi Hendrix take on Bob Dylan’s All Along The Watchtower came fourth, and Jeff Buckley’s heart-breaking cover of Leonard Cohen’s classic Hallelujah completed the top five. This made me wonder what would be my favourite cover. It’s a hard job whittling it down to a top 10, let alone a top five or top three. There are so many factors to consider, and I’m also sure it depends on what mood you are in when asked! I always like a cover version to have a fresh feel to it. Do something with the track. Like they say on the X Factor, “Make the song your own.”

Cover songs - they’re Always on my mind!
For that reason, I’ve gone with the Charlie Daniels Band’s version of Delilah as my first choice. Chances are, you haven’t heard it, but if you have five minutes to spare, go to YouTube and have a listen. It’s amazing. Daniels of course is most famous for the Devil goes down to Georgia, and he retains that bluegrass feel on the old Tom Jones standard. I adore Robbie Williams, take on the Jerry Jeff Walker classic Mr Bojangles, and the delightfully-camp Mick Jagger & David Bowie cover of Martha and the Vandellas’ Dancing In The Street makes up my top three. What would you choose? I asked my fellow Oasis Fm Djs for their choices, and it makes fascinating reading. I guess it’s a generational thing as there are some interesting picks. Four great summer wines THE good weather is finally here and it’s time to enjoy those easy wines, which go so well with your barbecue.
Since 1930, the Zuazo family have been producing great wines. Back in the day, the first growers planted a variety more resistant to pests in wellventilated, sunny soils, that needed little moisture. These grapes were also able to hold the water, which yielded some unique h a r v e s t s . Subsequently, there was a saying which b r o a d l y translates into “The vineyard where there is ice and where there is water in the garden”. T o d a y , s e v e n generations later, this philosophy still holds
validity, and the results are stunning. The Zuazo have two red wines, one rose and a white, made with the utmost rigour, control and care. G7 blanco: made from the Sauvignon Blanc and Viura, maintaining an intense aroma, and the wine a fresh and creamy character. Tasting notes: Colour - bright-lemon, clean straw tones. Rich aroma of fennel, apple and grapefruit.
With a step soft and fresh palate with a good balance between acidity and sweetness, along with a pleasant and lingering after-taste. Alcohol: 12% vol. Temperature: 8-10 ° C. G7 rosado: Made from the tempranillo varieties. This maintains an intense aroma and gives it a fresh and sumptuous character. Tasting notes: Colour - pale-pink, bright, intense aroma and very clean. It is dominated by notes of sweet red fruit, accompanied by floral notes. Pleasant to the nose, fresh and aromatic. The palate shows to be a very round and balanced wine with g o o d acidity and fresh input. Smooth and very nice step, m o u t h filling fruit, leaving l o n g
memories of red fruits. Persistent and tasty. Alcohol: 12% vol. Temperature: 8-10 ° C. G7 Tempranillo: Intense varietal aromas, red fruits and plum. Tasting notes: Purple red, bright and highly vivid colour. The palate is fruity, fresh and alive. Accompanied by a balanced tannic acid structure, which provides us with a wine which is well-built medium, persistent and tasty body. Alcohol: 13% vol. Temperature: 15-17 °C G7 Madurado: Made from Tempranillo and lives in American oak barrels of 225 litres. This gives it a fruity character with an elegant upbringing. It is a cherry-red colour wine with hints of purple. This bright wine is intense, with aromas of ripe red fruits, vanilla and balsamic notes, with traces of coffee. The palate starts with a fresh, fruity attack, in harmony with the notes of
ageing, accompanied by a polished, greedy tannic structure. Tasty persistent and balanced finish. Alcohol: 13% vol. Temperature: 15-17 ° C. Their appearances are bright with highly vivid colours complemented by the design and the colour from the bottles. So if you are looking for easy drinking and maintenance wine for your party, uncork one of the
ultimate generation G7 - and enjoy until the 8th generation. Available in our shop with a special offer if you come with this article, and a free tasting, so step up to the new generation and visit us at our facilities in Las Chafiras Prestigio y Tradición Calle Arujo, 2, Las Chafiras. Oriental Garden
It’s great turning Japanese THE “Gourmetland” group are responsible for some amazing restaurants in Tenerife.
They have made a real impression, and it’s no surprise to see copycat restaurants popping up over town. When they regenerated Americas Plaza a few years back, they raised the bar. La Martina, Mamma Mia and then Embrujo were real signature restaurants. But in many ways, it was Oriental Garden which set the standard. The other restaurants rely on a certain style, while Oriental Garden offered so much variety. You could choose from Asian, Thai, Indian, Teppanyaki or Japanese dishes. And it’s nice to see that so little has changed. As the old saying goes: “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” At Oriental Garden, they still have some of the original staff and it’s great to see how much pride they take in their work. And it’s the little things you notice. The constant, real smiles; none of this painted-on-cheek opener you can see. The knowledge of the dishes. The “nothing-istoo-much-trouble” attitude. It really makes a difference to the dining experience. As mentioned above, at Oriental Garden there is so much choice. When you get the menu, you spend five minutes going through all the options - and then an-
other five trying to work out how hungry you really are, and how many dishes you can try. But for this visit I had a plan. And I was going to stick to it, no matter what. I was going to go Japanese all the way and that meant starting with Sushi. There is no grey area when it comes to sushi as it is what it is. Raw fish. Some people literally cannot stomach it, and these are normally the type who haven’t tried it. Or they have had bad sushi and been scared for life. Sushi has to be prepared with care. It’s unrushed. It’s a relaxing dish. The chef takes his time slicing or rolling. There is a vast menu at Oriental Garden, and we went for the “Dragon”, which is river eel, along with some salmon and my personal favourite, tuna. It was amazing. Eel is so under-rated as a sushi dish and it’s hard to find it fresh, fresh. The salmon had a wonderful texture and the tuna was to die for. When it’s this good, you just shake your head at the thought that people would cook it, or even consider putting it in a sandwich. After a much-needed breather, it was on to some old favourites: Marinated chicken skewers, Japanese Pork with mushrooms, scallops with spring onion and beef rolls. These are all cooked on the Teppanyaki, and they have that unique flavour you get only when it’s cooked that way. It was a good com-
bination of starters. It’s enough food to keep you happy, and perfect to share with a partner or in a group. A little of everything, with the scallops a wonderful, surprise hit. It’s a dish that seems so simple, but they are devilishly hard to get right. Often, they are underseasoned and bland. Or overcooked and chewy.
Not here. The spring onions and the chef’s seasoning left us craving for more. But with the main course to come, we wisely avoiding ordering seconds. Again, it’s hard to select just a couple of dishes, but we went for the spicy Duck and special Beef. This was served with Japanese rice. Now, rice is rice isn’t
it? Wrong. The Japanese rice is a few pennies more - and worth every cent. I’ll not spoil the surprise of what’s in it (well, apart from the finely-diced peppers, whose crunch makes the meal). But let’s just say that once you’ve had it, you will never go back to “normal” rice. Again, all the dishes
were first-rate. And if I had to pick a flaw, you could argue the portions were too big. But that’s like a millionaire moaning that his wallet is too small to hold all his 500-euro notes. Oriental Garden is in Americas Plaza in Las Americas, opposite Mediterranean Palace. For reservations call 922 796 544.

My little ponies!!
Salt treatment is just so sweet
By Vanessa Vee THIS week has been a bit of a strange one, thanks to an error in communication on my part. I saw an advert recently and the word CAVE immediately jumped out at me.
WOWEE ... a cave! That’s what I’m gonna do, go up the mountains. I’ve no idea what a “salt cave” is, but I’m going. Giddy as I was, I enquired about the Tenerife’s only “Kristal Salt Cave”. And with visions of driving halfway up to a remote area of Mount Teide, I was then informed that this new venture was actually in San Eugenio! I got into an in-depth chat message with Amanda, who oversees everything to do with this business and, in turn, she sent me a YouTube link so I could see exactly what it was all about. Go on, try it: type in Salt Cave Newsround on YouTube and the report will just grasp you, as it did me. After hearing this information and the healing properties it has, I just had to try it, even if just for a half-hour session. I don’t have much spare time for luxuries like this, and after two weeks of trying to actually get to the Salt Cave, I spoke with Amanda again and explained that with young chil-
dren, it’s quite difficult to get time away. But this did not appear to be a problem as children are actively encouraged to visit, especially with respiratory conditions. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to go down and have a good catch-up with Amanda, who could explain everything to me in detail. So I ventured down to San Eugenio with the youngest, to the Tropicana Shopping Centre, opposite Hotel Jardin Tropical and next to Hotel Panorama. We were greeted on arrival and we were led into the salt cave. It replicates a giant sandpit in a way, apart from the fact that it’s not sand but salt! The walls are encrusted in rock salt, a table full of reading material is in place and half-a-dozen deckchairs surround the perimeter. These deck-chairs are, in fact, known as “Zero Gravity” chairs in the salt-cave world, and Amanda demonstrated exactly how they recline into a comfortable, floating position. We got seated, while young Sonny (21 months) played with the toys sitting barefoot in the salt - that’s because direct contact will have a stronger effect. In a nutshell - and believe me, Amanda really does know what she is talking about - the Kristal Salt Cave provides Salt Therapy (aka Halotherapy) which is a drug-free, high-dispersion saline, aerosol, micro-climate treatment. It is a therapeutic method, based on the principle of natural salt mines’ micro-climate,
which is prolonged exposure to the specific micro-climate of salt caves and salt mines. The method is based on dry-salt aerosol playing an important role in the relief of health problems. It is used for patients with chronic, obstructive, pulmonary diseases, asthma, sinusitis and other respiratory problems. This is the only method which eliminates the disadvantages of existing healing options. While modern pharmaceuticals provide effective relief from chronic diseases, there are serious side-effects associated with repeated or prolonged use. Continuous drug therapy is associated with the possible development of allergic or toxic reactions, development of anti-biotic tolerant species of micro-organisms, spreading of dysbiosis and long-term, immune-system destruction. Other ailments able to reap the benefits of this therapy include bronchitis, sinusitis, rhinitis, coughs, colds, pneumonia and pharyngitis. And even dermatological symptoms can ease, such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and dermatitis, and it can also strengthen the immune system, ease snoring, and help reduce stress, fatigue, insomnia and depression. Amanda, who is extremely accommodating, provides a calm environment, from mood lighting, comfort and music. The Krystal Salt Cave is open on weekdays from 10am-6pm, with later closing on a Thursday, and weekend visits available by appointment. Future plans consist of mother-and-baby groups, meditation sessions and a loyalty-card scheme. Prices start from just 9.90 euros for a 30-minute session. So if you have a friend or friends who need a catch-up, or you just want some quiet solo down-time, use this healthy option to have a get-together with a difference. I’ll definitely be returning! Call 642 753 944 to book your session.

IF you must do it, then please make an effort ... tying your hair up, that is! I know it’s sometimes essential but, unless you’re at the gym - or cleaning the house - there’s no excuse to have dull or boring, tied-up hair.
As regular readers will know, scraping the hair back, and shoving an elastic band in it is one of my pet hates. It simply says, “I can’t be bothered”, which is fine if you have nowhere to go, or you’re hanging around the house. But, if you are out and about, or going to work, and your hair is looking a little worse for wear, then don’t despair. There are many simple and quick ways you can make your hair look amazing, yet out of the way. If you must scrape your hair back, try a simple ponytail. Wrap a small piece of hair around the base to disguise the band (making sure it’s not elastic), and then simply spritz the ends with fixing spray. In random, large sections, tong the hair to the base, leaving it to cool as you move on to the next section. When complete, pull a flat brush through the hair to loosen the curls, then spritz again.
This is a quick, easy up-do that looks as though you have made an effort. Another idea is to scrape your hair back loosely into a ponytail, then back-comb the whole section until slightly messy. Loosely, pin the hair in random sections and, when complete, take two thin headbands and place them at the front, as shown. Voila! Instant, but notoverly-done, glam. If you’re good with your hair, then a small plait, taken back into a sleek ponytail, looks good enough, even for a night out. And it will last a few days. The best way to style your hair like these images is to do it when it is slightly dirty. It will be easier to handle, and
fine if you want to blow- dry your hair one day, then take it up the next. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Using hair ornaments will take your ponytail, or simple updo, from day to night. Don’t use these ideas as excuses never to do your hair, though. There is nothing worse than hearing that a client never wears her hair down, even if she has bothered to have a good cut and an amazing colour. Above all, if you are short of time, at least make a small effort. Your hair says so much about you, so don’t let people think you don’t care. You have been given three, simple to-do ideas, so go ahead and use them. Never be caught again with a greasy, scrapedback ponytail that does nothing for you - or your image!

By Monica Dyson WHEN I was a child growing up on a council estate in the UK, and before the concept of buying a council house was ever thought up by those who didn’t seem to understand what they were for in the first place, we had a couple of professional people living on the road.
We knew that by the brass plate on the front of the house. One lady was a piano teacher, and one was a lady’s corsetiere. The teaching of piano we understood, but the purveyor of ladies’ undergarments was a bit of a mystery to us as children. Our mother bought her knickers and bras either at the Co-op or from a local shop specialising in ladies’ un-

Coming up to scratch: those dreaded corsets derwear, where the goods you could buy in the shop were displayed in the window on dummies, causing some interest to small boys. Actually, having madeto-measure undies certainly denoted a person who might be a bit upper-crust! It appeared that the garments in question were corsets, which every self-respecting woman wore. It isn’t quite clear why they did, but for women who were born in the early 20th century, it seems that it was expected of them. Certainly, corsets were seen as a sign of social class, or an assumed social class, and one of respectability. It was quite common in some big houses to employ kitchen maids, and so that they might move around freely to fulfil their domestic duties, they started to leave off their restricting corsets; thus being thought of as “common”. Corsets were not an attractive garment. The early ones are not to be confused with the ones one might see today in films like “Belle

STEPHAN A bright light went out in Silencio the day you went away. (12.05.14)
de Jour”! The ones my mother wore had suspenders at the bottom edge to fasten a pair of stockings because, of course, there were no tights in those days. Presumably, as there were a pair of suspenders, corsets were referred to as a “pair of corsets” although being one garment. Sewn into the garment were stays, which were thin strips of whalebone. These were quite bendy and quite liable to come out sometimes. They were often much sought after by small boys, who used them to make catapults. It’s a wonder the birth rate stayed buoyant in those days as the corset must have been a total turnoff where the bedroom was concerned, especially as women would talk about “having a good scratch” when they took it off. What a passion killer! During the Fifties, the roll-on came into fashion. Much less rigid than the corset and made of some sort of rubber material, it was decidedly unglamorous - and you had to wear a suspender belt on top of it to hold up your stockings. Nevertheless, most women started to wear the roll-on. In 1953, panty hose was invented by American Allen Grant. By the mid-Sixties, when miniskirts were at the height
of their popularity courtesy of Mary Quant, almost every woman wore what became known as tights. In 1970, tights outsold stockings for the first time. Tights remain popular right up to the present day, with sales peaking in the Nineties, but they have been in decline for some years because younger women have gone for the bare-leg look. Recently, we have become familiar with the “Mad Men look”, which has given us a nostalgic glimpse of a time when good foundation gar-
ments were all-important. The pointed bra, panty leg roll-on and nylon-lace, bouffant, net petticoat were the hidden part of the wellgroomed woman in the early Sixties. Over the years, panties have come up and down, as it were! Over the centuries, they have gone from Victorian drawers through to Edwardian Cami Knickers to Directoire Knickers to French Knickers. Called knickers until the early Twenties, they then became known as panties. And,
by the Thirties, as panty briefs, getting smaller and smaller. But it has always been possible to buy the garments known popularly as Big Knickers, and made famous by Bridget Jones. They are also called Old Ladies Knickers, even though I can’t think of anyone in my age group who would be seen in them! Not that many are actually seen in them, you understand! Fabrics also changed. Cotton was always most popular as the garments could be boiled, with nylon a close second. But silk undies have always been thought of as most sexy and glamorous, if not as practical. Dynasty and Dallas gave us the rather sexy “teddies”, and today you are absolutely spoilt for c h o i c e in panty styles, with hil e g s , h i p s t e r, thongs and g-strings. It has certainly come a long way from your childhood, when you wore the dreaded liberty bodice and knickers with pockets for your hankie! However, it seems that women have been buying Spanx foundation garments since 2000. Described as shapewear in disguise and having names like Bod a Bing and Hide and Sleek, it seems that they may be just like the roll-on garments of yesteryear! But do you need to have a good scratch when you take them off?

Binge-boozers face big shock
A modernday miracle By Nico Gil
of Activate Sports Club
IN today’s fastpaced world, where whatever we want, we want it yesterday, there’s never been more demand for quick, easy solutions, even to the most complicated problem.
So, what if I told you that there was one simple, effective, scientifically-proven way to achieve not only all the following but a long list of etceteras as well? *Improved memory *Better concentration *Weight loss *Reduced inflammation *Stronger immune system *Lower levels of depression *Longer life expectancy Now, what if I also told you that this “wonder therapy” was completely free. Amazing, isn’t it! What is this revolutionary new treatment? Sleep. Plain old sleep. A modern-day miracle that’s as old as time itself. In terms of how important sleep is to the human body, you can put it right up there alongside breathing and eating. In other words, it’s absolutely vital. Yet many people exist on very little sleep, unaware of the many problems and complications to which this can, and almost certainly, will lead. When we sleep, we give our bodies a chance to refresh and repair mentally, emotionally and physically. And it’s especially important for children and young adults, as the brain releases essential growth hormones during sleep.
Sleep deprivation (six hours or less a night) leaves the brain exhausted and unable to function properly. The most obvious effect is tiredness, but there are other consequences which are not so easy to spot, or that people don’t link to a lack of sleep. Concentration becomes more difficult, short-term and longterm memory is affected, creativity is impaired, and there is also a negative impact on your emotions. You’re much more likely to suffer from mood swings, aggression and hypersensitivity. Physically speaking, sleeping gives your immune system a boost, making it better equipped to fight illness, as it’s during sleep when infectionfighting antibodies are produced. A lack of sleep reduces your immunity and means that not only will you take longer to recover from illness, but you are also more likely to develop chronic illnesses. Sleep deprivation also increases the production of cortisol, a stress hormone, as well as lowering levels of a hormone called leptin, which is what tells our brain when we’ve had enough to eat. Both these factors can lead to weight gain. The recommended eight hours a night is perfect. Often, people working on a deadline, or thinking they are
missing out on life by sleeping, cut back on the number of hours, not realising that the effect is completely the opposite of what they’re looking for. It becomes even harder to concentrate, and their overall quality of life suffers. If you are one of the many people who have trouble sleeping, here are a few tips to improve the quantity and quality of your shuteye: *Try to avoid any caffeine or sugary drinks after 4pm. *If you like a warm bath or shower, make sure it’s at least an hour before bedtime. Raising your body temperature (with hot water for example) too close to bedtime may make it harder to fall asleep. *Disconnect from technology at least an hour before bed. This means turning off your Smartphone, iPad, and any other gadget that can leave you with a over-agitated mind. Ideally, leave all your gadgets in another room to avoid grabbing them and taking a look at Facebook if you wake up at 2am. *Regular exercise, even walking just 20 minutes a day, has been proven to help stabilise sleep patterns. *Eat a light supper and give your digestive system chance to work before going to bed. Try to avoid eating anything two hours beforehand.

By Val Sainsbury BINGE drinking increases the risk of a heart attack by more than 70%, and the dangers peak within the first hour of starting the booze-up.
Those mostly in the firing line are revellers, who drink little or nothing during the week but overdo it at the weekend. In contrast, drinking a small amount of alcohol every day appears to protect against potentially-fatal heart problems. It was also found that cardiac arrests were most likely to occur in those men and women who drink drinking spirits like vodka, whisky or gin, but beer and wine posed less of a threat. The latest study, by a team of international scientists led by experts at America’s renowned Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, found that adults enjoying a daily tipple were no more likely to have a heart attack than teetotallers. Scientists now believe cardiac emergencies are much more common in adults who are not regular alcohol consumers, but binge drink when they do go out. Every year, 50,000 men and 32,000 women in England alone suffer a heart attack, and heart disease remains Britain’s biggest killer, accounting for some 33% of all deaths. Last year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that Britain was among the worst countries in the world for bingeing on alcohol. It came 13th out of 196 nations for heavy drinking - worse than countries such as Estonia, Ukraine, Belarus and Hungary. In total, 28% of Britons were classed as having had at least one session of heavy drinking in the previous month - almost twice the 16% global average.
Binge drinking as a teenager causes longlasting changes to the regions of the brain which control learning and memory. The new study shows that alcohol exposure during adolescence, before the brain is fully developed, can result in abnormalities that have enduring, detrimental effects on a person’s behaviour. And scientists warn that alcohol could also slow down emotional maturity. Dr Mary-Louise Risher, at Duke University, said: “In the eyes of the law, once people reach the age of 18 they are considered adult. But the brain continues to mature and refine all the way into the midtwenties. “It is important for young people to know that when they drink heavily during this period of development, changes could occur that have a lasting impact on memory and other cognitive functions.” Doctors have known for years that drinking can drive up blood pressure in the first hour or so after consumption. But until now, there have been few major studies looking at the heart-attack rate during the hours after heavy boozing. The research team, from the US, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia, studied nearly 4,000 heartattack victims from across America to see how many had been drinking in the hours before they fell ill. All patients were asked to recall how much alcohol they had consumed and what type, as well as how often they normally drank in the year leading up to falling ill. The results, recently published online in the Epidemiology journal, found the chances of a heart attack soared by 72% in the hour or so after starting a drinking session. The danger seemed to subside by three hours - and 24 hours after starting to bingedrink, there was no increase in risk.
Scientists say this suggests the most crucial period is the first 60 minutes, especially for occasional drinkers. The researchers said in their report: “Habitual, moderate, alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of heart attacks, whereas binge drinking is associated with higher cardiovascular risk. “But less is known about the immediate effects of alcohol on the risk of acute heart attacks, and whether it differs by beverage type or usual drinking patterns. “In this study, the heart-attack rate was 72% higher during the hour after drinking alcohol, compared with periods of no consumption. “And the association was stronger for spirits than for beer or wine.” Researchers said it was possible that beer and wine were less risky because they are known to contain chemicals, called polyphenols, which protect the heart against damage. But they added that it was also possible that spirit drinkers down more alcohol in a short space of time because of the higher concentration in booze like vodka, rum and gin. Experts stressed that their findings were a stark warning to Britain’s binge drinkers. British Heart Foundation senior cardiac nurse Christopher Allen said: “Drinking more alcohol than the recommended amount is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, which can lead to heart attack and stroke. “This study reinforces this message, and also suggests that it could lead to a short-term, increased risk of heart attack immediately after drinking. But further studies are needed to fully understand this link.’ Dermot Neely, HEART UK spokesman, said: “Binge drinking more than six units in one sitting for a male, or more than four for a female, is harmful to the heart and arteries.

SUMMER is here at last, and what we wore last week won’t do now because these temperatures are here to stay for a few months.
So what do we normally reach for, colourwise, when the warmer season is well and truly here? White, of course, but have you ever thought of teaming it up with this season’s hottest colour trend: BLACK? Yes, mixing these two colours together is this summer’s hottest blend, so you don’t have to shelve those black winter items until November. Mix them up with stark white to really stand out. If you are going to try it, make sure there isn’t more black in your outfit than white. Go heavy on the white and add just a touch of black to set off your look. What looks amazing with this trend is subtle floral. I’m not a lover of floral, but blackand-white floral looks stunning and is perfect for a summer wedding if you’re unsure of how

IT’S BLACK! IT’S WHITE!
the weather will be. If you are teaming up your outfit with accessories, try to keep the shoes black, or black and white, because white shoes can look a little dated. If you’re looking for jewellery, the classiest of looks has to be silver. Gold with black and white to me just doesn’t go together, but don’t overdo the jewels because the outfit should do all the talking. When looking for white items to mix with black, make sure the white IS white and not off-white or cream because the black can make these shades look “dirty”. If you go for stripes, make sure they aren’t too wide and that they are vertical not horizontal as this can make the slimmest girl seem
bigger. Same, too, with putting a black top with a white bottom. You will enhance the lower part of you body even more, so that’s something to think about if you are a curvier girl. With abstract prints being big news this year, there’s no better look than black and white, and it is up to you how you do it. But do it in a way to reflect “your” style and not a copy of another. What’s great about this trend is that it suits all shapes and age groups. So don’t be scared to mix things up the next time you are putting an outfit together. Even if you just add some black shoes and a belt to a simple dress, you have this season’s must-have fashion: MONOCHROME!

The King’s Gold
Long ago, there was a king who had six sons. The king possessed a huge amount of gold, which he hid carefully in a building consisting of a number of rooms. In each room there were a number of chests; this number of chests was equal to the number of rooms in the building. Each chest contained a number of golden coins that equaled the number of chests per room. When the king died, one chest was given to the royal barber. The remainder of the coins had to be divided fairly between his six sons.
The Question: Is a fair division possible in all situations?

The cyclist drives one kilometer in three minutes with the wind in his back, so in four minutes he drives 1 1/3 kilometer. Against the wind, he drives 1 kilometer in four minutes. If the wind helps the cyclist during four minutes and hinders the cyclist during another four minutes, then in these eight minutes - the cyclist drives 2 1/3 kilometers. Without wind, he would also drive 2 1/3 kilometers in eight minutes and his average speed would then be 17.5 kilometers per hour. Therefore, it will take him 3 3/7 minutes to drive one kilometer.

Tenerife’s last-gasp rescue CD Tenerife 1 CD Lugo 1
By Roscoe THIS was suppose to be the match that secured Tenerife’s stay in the second division. An hour before kick-off there was the traditional memorial for Rommel Fernández who died in 1993.
As always, there was a good turn-out to honour the Panama legend and, at half-time, Tenerife’s B team paraded the Heliodoro Cup they had won a few days beforehand. This is their league cup and they received a warm hand to acknowledge their 2-0 victory over CD Mensajero. More on them soon. Even the sun was shining in Santa Cruz, so what could possibly go wrong? Except that this is CD Tenerife, masters of finding a tight spot in a desert of nothingness. Lugo turned up with a horrific away record, and, though they were battered throughout, they nearly stole the win - only for the sporting Gods to have the last word. Jose Juan had a stormer in the Lugo goal, as every keeper appears against CDT to these days, and, as the game wore on, Tenerife became more and more frustrated.
Diego Ifran seems to have lost his confidence in front of goal as he wasted a plethora of chances, and Maxi Perez also squandered a few. Let’s get one thing straight: there is not much wrong with this Tenerife side. Betis and maybe Sporting aside, they are not far behind the other top sides. It really does come down to putting the ball in the back of the net. If Tenerife had a Rommel or the 2008 version of Nino or, of course, Ayoze Perez, they would be in the play-offs. But scoring is the name of the game, and the longer Tenerife went without doing so, the closer our fans
came to the inevitable. And so it happened three minutes from time. And the Lugo goal came from a Tenerife corner! A swift clearance caught Tenerife short and it was two on one. There was nothing Dani Hernandez could do as Alvaro Pena stroked the ball into an empty net. It was the ultímate sucker-punch. Lugo celebrated as if they had won the league, and it took 90 seconds for the game to be restarted, much to the annoyance of referee Francisco Arias. But then karma took over. As the Lugo players strolled slowly back to their positions,
Tenerife manager Raul Agne was screaming from the technical area. He encouraged the midfield players forward and from the restart, a couple of Lugo players were still facing the wrong way. Tenerife kicked off, spread the ball down the left, Maxi took over on the edge of the box - and just as he was about to pull the trigger, he was bundled over. It was a stonewall penalty. Despite it not being Vitolo’s best-ever efPosition
fort, the ball ended up in Juan’s net and it was the fans’ turn to go wild. By the time Lugo kicked off, it was three minutes since they had scored and last touched the ball. Karma! Tenerife threw everything at the Lugo goal, but that gilt-edged chance never came. It was another two points dropped, and there is now no win since St Paddy’s week. That said, the gap to
the drop-zone is still four points, and they are five above this weekend’s opponents, Racing Santander. This is must-win for the hosts, who have had a few seasons of horror. Tenerife travel without the suspended Raul Camara and Aitor Sanz, while Agne has promised to attack. The Tenerife boss said: “There is no reason to sit back and fear Racing. We have a team who can go to Santander and win. And if we do, then that will be that.” Elsewhere this weekend, CD Mensajero can wrap up the Canarian section of division 3A. The La Palma lads have had a brilliant second half of the season and the good times could be returning to the club. They had a run in the third tier of Spanish football, from 1992 to 2002, until the money ran out. During that time they were in the play-off’s to make the second division. They lost out to the likes of Cordoba and Granada, who are both in La Liga at the moment. Victory at home to Telde on Sunday could send them into the complex play-off system as a first seed, and just two games from a return to the third tier. Photos: Gary Hill

Real and Barca to feel the pinch SPAIN’S footballing giants Real Madrid and Barcelona will be prevented from negotiating their own lucrative TV rights deals under a new law next year.
The rules will see rights to show La Liga pooled and sold collectively, bringing it more in line with the England’s Premier League. The deal, which could see broadcasters pay far more, will still benefit the bigger clubs, but not to such a big extent. A Ministry spokesman said the changes will allow Spain to “adapt to modern times”. The ruling will regulate the rights to transmit games in the Spanish first and second divisions, as well as the
Copa del Rey and Super Cup competitions. Of total revenues from the sale of the rights, 90% will go to all La Liga clubs. Half of that money will be shared equally between the 20 clubs, with the other half divided up according to criteria, including recent performance and size. The other 10% will go to second division clubs, with 70% of that money being divided equally. Sport Ministry spokesman Miguel Cardenal said: “Last year, the club who came last in the Premier League earned more than current Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.” In February, the Premier League sold TV rights to their games for three seasons, from 2016-17 and from 2018-19, for a record £5.136bn.

Nadal’s golden praiseS SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has presented tennis ace Rafael Nadal with the Gold Medal for Merit at Work.
It was awarded to the star from Mallorca to underline “his hard work, the demands he places on himself, his enthusiasm, his balance, his modesty and for having his feet placed firmly on the ground.” Rajoy added during the ceremony at Madrid’s Moncloa Palace: “In short, it’s for a job well done, which has resulted in his great triumphs, of which we are all aware.” The PM said the tennis star’s career has been highlighted by his achievement in becoming only the second player ever to win all the Grand Slams, and that he has won more Roland Garros tourna-
ments than anyone else - nine in total. “I believe this record will not be broken by anyone in centuries,” added Rajoy. “Only he will be able to beat this record.” He also pointed out that Nadal has won the most singles tournaments ever, 27, on the
ATP world tour, and that he is the finest clay-court player of all, winning 19 titles. The ceremony was held last Friday, to coincide with May Day, and Rajoy said: “There are many people in Spain who do not have a job, but things are starting to improve,.
“And I am convinced that this year there will be many people who find a job in Spain, and also in the years to come. “At the end of the day, the challenge facing us all is to find a job and then work well, which is exactly what Rafael Nadal has done.”
Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League
Jolly Jamie’s late charge IT has been a fascinating Fantasy League season and, with just a few games to go, we have a late entrant in the race to be champion. The point-scoring team of the week was dominated by Leicester, who are on a great run, which may see them retain their Premier League status. They provided three players, with two coming from West Brom after their great victory against Man Utd, and two from Arsenal after
they put Hull to the sword. The rest were provided by Sunderland, Liverpool, Swansea and Aston Villa. So, on to the small matter of the title race. Nick Abbott has been up there all season, and his Boomtown Rabz still lead the way with 1,904 points. Ray Malone’s Inter Malone are still in second but are now five points back with 1,899 points. Frank Devaney’s Toffees are up to third on 1,894 points, and a surprise runner has entered the race. Jamie Palmer’s Spartans have been quiet movers over
the last few weeks, and the Sweden-based manager has now moved up into fourth spot with 1,890 points. He is just 14 points off the lead, while Gordon Wilson’s Coffee Shop Karma have fallen off a cliff. Another poor performance sees them slipping back into fifth spot and, seemingly, out of the race. The title could come down to one or two shrewd changes. I mentioned a few weeks ago that Harry Kane could run out of steam and now looks the time to dump him. Who will find the hid-
den gems that will get them over the line? And now that Chelsea have wrapped up the league, will they ease off, and will Mourinho try out a few squad players and kids? Amazingly, Roscoe had the team of the week, and he was a major scorer with an impressive total of 77 points. His big players were Morgan and Ulloa from Leicester and his captain, Coutinho, who earned him 26 points. He is now just 33 points away from finishing in the top half of the table, provided other teams drop points. Chris Elk-
ington has moved into a two-point lead in the Oasis Fm battle over Adi Benson, and Roscoe’s performance has seen him cement third spot.
So John Zammit needs to start thinking about where to take the boys for a steak as he picks up his wooden spoon. At least Chelsea won the league, John!

Jester’s promotion joy
THE Direct Telecom Pool League is coming to an end and, barring a massive collapse, the likes of which we haven’t seen before, Gaffers A should be crowned champions next week.
They continued their unbeaten run on Tuesday night against Dreamers A, who can be a stubborn side. But the result never looked in doubt as Gaffers moved through the gears and started picking frames off. Dreamers, despite their resilience, simply couldn’t match their opponents and the points were quickly decided. Tenerife Hammers A, who refuse to give up their title without a fight, had a tough fixture against Palms A. The early games were close enough, but the Hammers took the chances when they were presented. Penguin was on form for the hosts, but Hammers always had a little extra in the tank. They got home 9-3 and are two points behind Gaffers - but with just one more match to play. Gaffers have three, so a draw for them next week will be enough for the title. Inn the Pink A, frontrunners for third spot, travelled to Terrace Bar B, who were difficult to play against in the first half of the
season. Unfortunately, their form since Christmas has not been good and Inn the Pink came out of the blocks quickly. Before you could blink they were 6-2 up. Graham then beat Dan and the points were won. Wilf was the star of the night, winning his three games. The Phoenix and Phoenix Potters, also both in with a shout for third spot, clashed in the Los Abrigos steak derby with bragging rights at stake. Potters moved quickly into a 4-2 lead, but Phoenix struck back to level. So the last session was going to be tense. Potters took first blood with the opening two frames and at 6-4, must have thought victory was theirs. But the Phoenix had other ideas, digging deep and taking the final two to level the game and share the points. Down at the bottom, things are tight and Terrace Bar A were playing their last fixture of the season, knowing the relegation rivals had games in hand. They had a tough away fixture at Treehouse A, a side with top-five ambitions. The visitors started badly and at 4-1 down, things weren’t looking good. But Terrace’s Adi beat John to get a frame back, which inspired his team-mates, and they took the next two to level things at 4-4. John wasn’t having a

great night and when he potted the black midframe, the Terrace boys moved into a 5-4 lead. But this didn’t last long and it was soon 5-5. Treehouse smelt blood and a win, but Sparky and Adi left it until the last game of the season to play their best pool, taking the final frames and a massive three points which may just see them safe. Tenerife Hammers C were hoping for an easy ride against bar-mates Palms B. But with the opportunity to move above Palms A, they were never going to rollover. The early games were tight and the match was poised at 3-3. But at this point, Palms B found some form and dropped just one of the final six games to give them the three points they craved as they moved up the table. Hammers had their chances and captain Tony is still kicking the cat after missing an easy-looking black at a crucial stage of the con-
test. It looks a straight bunfight between Tenerife Hammers C and Peacocks to avoid the drop, and you could argue that Peacocks have a better run-in. Division Two belongs to Sporting Jester A, who were crowned champions without picking up a cue. Waterfall Jokers needed to win every game, which was too big a task. They sneaked past Inn The Pink B 7-5 in a make-up match, but were then stunned by Sporting Jester B 24 hours later. The draw gave Jester A a title they thoroughly deserve. They have been top all season, and it will be interesting to see how they get on in Division One next season. The Waterfall guys still have a chance of being second, but they must get past Bluebell A, who have just one more game to play. Bluebell A travelled to Inn the Pink B on Tuesday - a tough fixture - and the games were
closely contested. It could easily have ended in a draw, but Bluebell had just enough left to take the win. Gaffers B have finished the season strongly, and even though their late promotion charge just came up short, they will be a team to watch next time around. They went to Los Cristianos for their clash with Dreamers B and made light work of it They were never troubled and quickly racked up the frames needed for victory ... if only their early-season form had matched the current offerings. But at least they know what’s needed for next season. The Crown, who joined the league late, looked like rabbits caught in a car headlights at first, but they have come good in recent matches and Tuesday was another step in the right direction. They hosted Tenerife Pool Tables and were
nice and confident, producing a real team performance, with each player winning two games and ensuring three points. Fat Nick won all his matches for TPT, and that hasn’t happened since he was known as Harley’s Dad! In the final game of the night, Picasso’s A hosted Hoppys and started the evening above their opponents in the league. They didn’t manage to stay there, though, as Hoppys were in good form, seeing them off rapidly to leapfrog them. Unfortunately, the league has had to say goodbye to a favourite venue, Inn the Pink bar, down in the Patch. It is now under new ownership and will no longer be hosting pool nights. So the league wishes outgoing owners Ricky and his family all the best for the future and thanks for some great nights and hospitality.

Premier Preview

Burnley on way down By Adi Benson
CHELSEA are this year’s league champions, and deservedly so, after leading the way for most of the season. But there is still plenty to be settled at the top and the bottom of the Premier League.
Aston Villa v West Ham Villa have looked a better team since Tim Sherwood took charge, and they have an FA Cup final to savour. League results have been a little better, but they are still just two points above the relegation places. Looking at the teams below them, they should be okay, and another win would ease the tension even more - certainly a fixture they are capable of winning. West Ham got back to winning ways last week. Yes, they beat bottom club Burnley, but they all count. It moved them up to ninth but, dependent on results this weekend, they could easily slip back into the lower half of the table. Prediction: Draw
Stoke v Tottenham Stoke had the opportunity to move into eighth place last week but, after losing to Swansea, they ended up dropping back to 10th behind West Ham. So they will be looking to make amends. Their home form is good, but they need early goals and the longer the game goes on, the more vulnerable they become. Spurs put in a decent performance against Man City but just couldn’t get a goal and ended up with another defeat - another wasted opportunity to move level on points with Liverpool. But if they can play with the same intensity, they should come away with three points. Prediction: Away win
Man City v QPR City have seen Chelsea take the league and, again, have been unable to defend their title. They are now in a battle for second spot and know that Arsenal are breathing down their necks should they slip up. On paper this should be a home win, but they have to be wary of the threat their opponents offer. They cannot be complacent and will go for early goals at home. QPR are desperate for three points, but they also need to hope the teams around them lose. It is a big ask. We have seen teams escape before, but seven points will be a difficult gap to bridge. They have an ageing squad and it just hasn’t been good enough for the league. A major overhaul is required in whichever league they are playing next season. Prediction: Home win
Chelsea v Liverpool It’s party time at Stamford Bridge for the league champions, and they will be relishing this game as there is history between the two clubs. Mourinho would love a big win against Liverpool. Some have said that because they have won, it is not too important. But they will field a strong team to put on a show for the home fans. Liverpool still have an outside chance of fourth spot, but they need to win their remaining games - and this is the hardest of the three. Recent performances have been below par, and they will need a huge turnaround on form if they are to get a result. Again, too many poor results against teams below them have cost points, but they have only themselves to blame. Prediction: Home win
Arsenal v Swansea Arsenal could put in a real title challenge next season if they can bring in a couple of quality players in the transfer window. They should finish second as they have a game in hand over City against Sunderland, but it is not a guaranteed three points. Early-season results kept them out of the title race. but they are the form team. Swansea are on for their highest finish and are six points clear of their rivals for eighth spot. So even a loss here wouldn’t be a disaster. The key will be defence and, if they can keep Arsenal at bay, they have a chance to hit them on the break. But that’s easier said than done. Prediction: Home win
Everton v Sunderland Everton had put together a decent run of late, which took them nicely up the table and away from the relegation battle. They came up against a resilient Villa team last weekend and were close to earning a draw. They will expect to win at home, but their opponents will not make it easy. If Sunderland are to avoid relegation, they need to get something from this fixture as they still face Arsenal and Chelsea. They played well against Southampton and will need the same level of performance. But they are reliant on other results going their way. Prediction: Home win
Hull v Burnley This is a massive game for both teams, but a win for Hull could be a huge step towards safety. After a good performance against Liverpool they came unstuck against Arsenal, so they need to pick themselves up and make sure they are well prepared. It’s a home fixture and the fans will be looking for a big performance. Burnley are running out of games and the results just haven’t gone their way. They are eight points from safety and will be relegated if they don’t win. They won’t and they will! Prediction: Home win
Leicester v Southampton The Foxes are on a fine run, which has lifted them off the bottom and carried them out of the relegation places, but only by a point. They must keep their momentum going and should be confident of getting another result here after seeing Sunderland beat Southampton last week. Ulloa is back among the goals, which is a good thing, and he could be the difference. Saints have wasted opportunities to move further up the table through some poor results, and they will want to put that right. A strong finish over their remaining games and they could be playing European football next season, which would be a fantastic achievement. Prediction: Away win
Newcastle v West Brom Newcastle, in all sorts of trouble after losing eight games in a row, find themselves in a relegation battle. After such a poor run it will be difficult for them to turn it around, but the players must stick together and play with a positive attitude. The off-field problems are not helping, and neither are the fan protests. They need to get behind their team or the unthinkable could happen. West Brom put in a great performance against Man Utd and were rewarded with a win, so they will be looking forward to this game knowing all about Newcastle’s problems. They will certainly not be in a charitable mood and will be keen to inflict loss No.9. Prediction: Home win
(because I promised a Newcastle fan)
Crystal Palace v Man Utd Palace gave it a really good go against Chelsea and were hoping to delay the title coronation a little longer, but it was not to be. We know how difficult they are to play at home and they will want to get back to winning ways, I also suspect Wilfried Zaha will have a point to prove against his former club, so don’t rule out him scoring - it tends to happen! United are coming into this game on the back of two defeats – matches they were expected to win. Thankfully for them, Liverpool also dropped points or they may have slipped out of the top four. But as it stands, they still have a four-point cushion. A win here should more or less guarantee them a return to the Champions League. Prediction: Home win
