PM hits the Island as Election hots up Continued from front Pedro Sanchez, General Secretary of the socialist party PSOE, and Cayo Lara, Federal Coordinator of IU, were the first on Canarian soil, campaigning within 48 hours of the official start. They were joined in the Canaries by MEP Javier Nart, while former Spain PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero went to Lanzarote. The military air crash in Seville prevented Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy from visiting Gran Canaria, but he did arrive in Tenerife on Sunday. He was in the North of the Island, visiting the major cities. The Premier started off in La Laguna, which, for some reason, has been a hive of activity, with all the big names popping in. The PM enjoyed his time in the historic town and was given a warm welcome by the locals, even though he was heckled a few times with calls for him to find “A solution to the housing problem”. One of Rajoy’s Ministers, Jose Manuel Soria, was by his side throughout. Soria will spend a fair bit of time in the Canary Islands, as the locally-born Minister is seen as a big vote-winner for the PP. And new polls show that Rajoy is starting to win the country back. This week a major survey showed that if the General Elections were held in Spain right now, his ruling Popular Party (PP) would win again with 25.6% of the vote. It’s the first time in 2015 that the PP has come out on top. The Socialists (PSOE) would be close on the conservatives’ heels, with a gap of just 1.3% between them. An April “voting intention” survey, conducted by the Centre for Sociological Studies (CIS), shows a much-different political scenario from the one which prevailed at the last elections, 3½ years ago. Then, the PP secured an absolute majority,

while the PSOE was dealt a major blow over its handling of the economic crisis. The poll also shows two newcomers to the political scene moving in opposite directions. Podemos, the new antiausterity party which topped recent voting-intention polls on a strong message of change, is losing steam and would finish third with 16.5% of the vote. Instead, voters are increasingly attracted by Ciudadanos (C’s), a nine-year-old party which began life in Catalonia and recently jumped to the national scene with the promise of sweeping reform. That said, the local and regional elections are a different kettle of fish. Here, the Coalition Canarias (CC) is still on course to retain the regional government and the key Cabildos. In Santa Cruz, current Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, (CC), has set out his manifesto. “We want Santa Cruz to be the cultural capital of the Atlantic,” he announced. He believes that culture will remain one of the foundations on which he can take the capital forward. “Our city will be a part-

ner to be reckoned with,” he said. “We must ensure the viability of cultural projects we want to develop in our city. “Over the past four years, we have been successful. Professionals, entrepreneurs or third parties will have our support in launching any project that culturally enriches our city.” The message is simple: culture brings prosperity. “Events have a direct impact on businesses and shops in the city, thanks to the full effect of visitors and citizens attending these activities,” said the Mayor. And with a promise to increase the budget for culture until 2019, he added: “In the next term, with a bigger budget and a better global economic context, we will show that Santa Cruz is the cultural capital of the Atlantic.” In the South, the PSOE has been busy with its manifesto launches. In Adeje, thousands at-

tended a rally at the MAGMA centre, where current Mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga wowed the crowd. He is a popular figure and a shoo-in to win again, it seems, and he unveiled a five point plan for the future: 1. We will value the intellectual capacity and creativity of the people who live here, because they are the most valuable resource we have if we are to advance. 2. Adeje will be a borough for open dialogue and participation, with efficient services and infrastructures that are designed to meet the needs of a society based upon equality of opportunity. 3. We are committed to our surrounds, our environment, clean energies and recycling, all of which serve to improve the quality of life for everyone. 4. We will continue with decisive advancements in the on-going process

of modernisation towards the creation of a Smart City, one that is innovative and at the disposal of all residents. 5. We want our borough to continue to generate wealth through profitable tourism under the Costa Adeje label, and use that wealth for the betterment of all. The Adeje Mayor said: “These are commitments to a 21st Century future, one that respects the diversity of the population, and recognises the need to move ahead if Adeje is to continue to be the successful global village it has become. “At a national level, too, the town is recognised as one of the few that has chosen the right path through the economic crisis, and has been listed by a independent review body as the borough in Tenerife to have best overcome the crisis - an emphasis on quality tourism and local job creation has played a large part in that.”

In Arona, his PSOE counterpart Jose Julian Mena is passing on a similar message. Arona has had a horror time recently, with good businesses being closed down, poor infrastructure and this week’s embarrassment of there being no Blue Flag beaches. Mena is proposing changes aimed at economic recuperation, job creation, competitiveness and a development respectful to the environment. He said “I want a model for Arona that listens to all, is respectful of debate and gives priority to important values such as equality, freedom and social cohesion in the most diverse and multicultural municipality of Tenerife.” The Arona candidate for Mayor is calling for changes to the municipality´s territorial urban planning. And he has promised investment and a stronger long-term plan that will see development and growth over the next 25 years. “We need to rescue public services, prioritising the maintenance of roads and get the streets clean. We need a new fiscal model that will make the payment of local taxes fairer, and more reasonable for business and families by introducing flat rates. I want to develop a real participative democracy that will be transparent, responsible, accountable, lawabiding, fair, sensible, efficient and effective for the future of Arona.” He is also promising technical and economic support to the business associations, and he will create the municipal board of PYMES (small and medium businesses) and the opening of a special window in the Town Hall for local businesses. There is no doubt that Arona needs shaking up, and Mena is making a lot of promises and saying the right things, especially about cleaning up the region and muchneeded help for local businesses.

Law-makers find it tough THE Canary Islands Government will be reformed in a few weeks, after the 24th May elections.

Currently, political parties CC and PSOE, along with the PP, comprise the decision-making committee, and it seems they are struggling to agree on anything. Eighteen laws and formal actions are still unresolved and, in many cases, negotiations are still open, while in five cases, the formal debates were closed without agreement. Officially, the negotiation process is still open to try to resolve the differences, specifically, on compensation to the Canary Islands for the annulment of the General Tax on the Traffic of Business (IGTE), the Tax on Bank Deposits and the transfer to the

Canaries of the general interest of the management of airports to the partial privatisation of AENA. There is also disagreement on State claims in connection with duties and services of the Social Security in educational matters, employment and vocational training. Also, there is no conclusion to the regional laws on bills, such as the regulating of the Canarian Insertion provision, of the Rights and Guarantees of Personal Dignity Rights (euthanasia) and the decree regulating the installation and operation of wind farms in the Islands. Part of this conflict will end up in court. One such case is the modification of the Canarian Housing Act, better known as the Anti Evictions Act, which was provisionally suspended by the National Government.

Stolen Swedish art is recovered in Tenerife THE National Police have made a stunning discovery in a Tenerife home. A major inter- continent police operation has led to the arrest of a man, and the recovery of 50 pieces of art stolen from churches in Sweden.

Along with the valuable paintings, offic-

ers also recovered an 18th Century bible, and four wooden carvings of great historical value from the 15th Century. The operation was conducted by the National Police, in collaboration with their Swedish, German and Danish counterparts. Apparently the man, of Spanish nationality and said to be 63, was a wellknown art thief. He had already served five years in Sweden for various robberies. The person, as yet unnamed, is well known as

a “plunderer of Swedish churches”, as local police have described him, and he will also be questioned over the theft of dozens of pieces of art from Tenerife churches. It ’s believed that when police searched the home of the suspect, a total of 43 objects of Swedish art were recovered, including candlesticks, and wooden ornaments. Among the items seized were four wood carvings from the 15 Century, a wooden chest and an undated,

but very old, canvas. This operation made it possible as well to recovery four wooden carvings in Madrid, which were also stolen from Sweden and sold through an auction house in the capital. In addition, a storeroom owned by the suspect was found in Denmark and several objects were recovered. And in another lockup, more stolen carvings and religious objects from Swedish churches and chapels were recovered.

This beer tastes watery! Let there be light!

ONE of the main criticisms about the southern section of the TF1 is about to end. Tenerife Cabildo has revealed a three-million-euro budget to cover the cost of lighting the motorway’s main areas to improve safety in the night hours. The lighting will go from Santa Cruz to Adeje, and Transport Minister José Luis Delgado said the project would begin in mid-June in the main trunk stretching from the capital to Torviscas. Now, only the route between Santa Cruz and Arafo is lit up.

However, this section has suffered a few problems recently because of various copper-cable thefts. Delgado said: “I hope this project is executed until the end, even if there is regime change after the local elections, as it will take a year to complete. But the financial funds are already in place.” Upgrading the lighting between Santa Cruz and Arafo will cost nearly 470,000 euros, while another 2.479.000 euros will go on illuminating the 18 junctions between Torviscas and Punta Prieta.

TENERIFE’S Guardia Civil has smashed a group trying to defraud Chinese exporters by selling them large quantities of water instead of the expected beer. Five containers have been seized

in Santa Cruz port and three in Algeciras. There are another 50 in transit, and some are scheduled to arrive shortly. The police operation resulted in two arrests - a man aged 33, and his 53-year-old mother. Both are accused of fraud, forgery, moneylaundering and belonging to a criminal group. The investigation w a s

sparked by a complaint from a Chinese businessman, who exports a certain brand of beer to China. He is believed to have been ripped off to the tune of 20 containers, which should have been loaded up with beer. Suspicion that the goods were not genuine led investigators to the arrested man, who used a network of compa-

nies run by him and his family, dealing from an El Rosario warehouse in a Cash & Carry business. The Tenerife native issued false invoices and all the necessary documentation for the containers to be shipped to China, where the goods were declared as a famous brand of beer, instead of the actual mineral-water content.

Tragedy plane: Tests suspended

THE Spanish Government has withdrawn permission for test flights of Airbus A400M military transport planes following the deadly weekend crash.

The aircraft are still in production, but officials say they are grounded until an investigation determines the cause. When Defence Minister Pedro Morenes annlounced the news on Tuesday, it sparked fresh uncertainty about planned deliveries of the cargo plane to national militaries who have ordered it by the dozen. In a statement, Airbus said it was too early to say how Spain’s decision would affect the delivery schedule, and that it was working with military authorities and customers “to manage the situation”. Two pilots and two flight test engineers died in Saturday’s crash in the southern city of Seville, where A400Ms are being assembled. “It’s not a good idea for those planes in the production phase, and about to do tests, to fly without knowing what really happened with the crashed plane,” said

Morenes in a radio interview. Spain’s air-traffic controllers said on Twitter that the pilots had communicated just before the crash about an unspecified problem which was affecting the flight. Some media outlets also quoted Airbus Seville labour union representative Francisco Figueroa as saying the pilot evaded a much worse disaster by landing the plane in a field, avoiding a possible crash into a nearby shopping mall or factories. “It appears that the pilot made a manoeuvre to try to avoid worse things happening in the accident,” said Morenes. The four who died were honoured at a funeral mass in Seville’s cathedral on Tuesday. Morenes said the permits were being temporarily rescinded by Spain’s National Institute for Aerospace Technique, which means that A400Ms in final stages of assembly cannot go on test flights. But he declined to provide initial findings of the crash investigation, stressing that the probe would be complicated. Also, a judge in Seville in charge of the crash probe ordered that it must be conducted in secret. Possible human and

technological crash factors will be investigated, said Morenes, adding the possibility that the pilot’s manoeuvring of the plane in its final moments in the air might provide clues. Airbus sought to promote the plane’s safety by conducting a test flight of another A400M on Tuesday, the aircraft flying safely from Toulouse, France, to Seville. That flight was not affected by Spain’s suspension of test flights because the plane owned by Airbus is a test plane not scheduled for delivery, said a company official. Fernando Alonso, who heads Airbus Defence and Space, took part as a flight engineer in a symbolic show of confidence. Alonso got his job in January after Airbus dismissed his predecessor following complaints by governments about continued delays in finishing the cargo plane, whose roll-out went billions over budget and years beyond deadline! Four of the five countries which already have A400Ms - Britain, Germany, Malaysia and Turkey - grounded the plane after the crash. France, which has six, will use the aircraft only in urgent operations. The 20-billion-euro A400M programme saw

its first deliveries in 2013. Some 194 aircraft have been ordered by eight countries, including Spain, to replace their ageing military transport fleets.

Millions flock to Canaries THERE was a slight increase in the number of passengers using the eight Canarian airports in the first four months of the year.

Officially 11,944,013 passengers - an increase of 0.4% over the same period last year - passed through the airports, according to Spanish airport authority AENA. Of that total, 3,458,076 used domestic flights, and international travellers added up to 8,328,338. Over seven million were from European Union countries. With 769,237 from nations outside Europe. Canaries finally settle Alonso’s on the pharmacies’ debt drink-drive campaign

THE Canary Islands has finally paid its 2014 medical bill, which means the debt owed to various pharmacies has been settled.

The Spanish National Health System (NHS) has seen an increase of 2.1% in its bill, compared with 2013. Spokesperson Juan Ignacio Güenechea said: “Pharmaceutical expenditure is contained, with respect to the previous year, in real terms.” The Spanish health market saw 9.4bn euros spent on medicines and drugs, against the 9.2bn in 2013 - an increase of 1.95%. Despite the slight growth, it is well below

the 2010 figures, when 12.2bn was spent. The Canarian bill was dwarfed by the pharmaceutical expenditure of Andalucia, Cataluña, Valencia and Madrid, who have spent a total of over 5.1bn euros. It is more than half the entire pharmaceutical

expenditure, and they issued more than 493 million prescriptions 57% of the total. Regarding non-payments, Cataluña is at the top of the debtors’ list to pharmacies. The Catalan Government has accumulated a 233m-euro deficit with

pharmacies, while Valencia has a 95m debt - the second region to accumulate huge pharmacy debts. An average pharmacy carries out about 45,000 sales operations annually, in which it disperses an average of 88,400 products.

Hard-up police force Arona’s beach blues European which is a record. Spain has more Blue still pulling its weight THE Foundation for also Flags than any other CARMEN Delia Gonzalez, head of the local police in Santa Cruz, has revealed that financial shortages have hit her force hard.

“We have less officers than just a few years ago and, as a result, a few members have lost their enthusiasm for this profession,” she said. But she stressed: “Despite this, the local police of Santa Cruz is still dedicated to its work, and we give maximum effort.” 2015 sees the celebration of 175 years of the police force since it was created in 1840. Yesterday (Thursday), Santa Cruz local police held a parade for the first time since the early Seventies, with over 70 officers from different units and 20 vehicles taking part. The troops were accompanied by numerous local authorities, including Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, and they

attended Mass in the church of La Concepción. Finally, the Mayor, the Security Council and the Superintendent presided over the official ceremony of awarding medals, congratulations and distinctions of the “Chicharrero” (Tenerifian) local police, which took place in the Guimerá Theatre. There was also a touching tribute that brought a standing ovation to the oldest people belonging to the local police, aged between 87 and 94 years old. During the ceremony, a total of 13 local police agents received silver medals for distinguished services - 11 for a successful drugs operation and two officers, whose fast-thinking saved the life of a citizen. Also, a shield of recognition from the Veterans Association of Local Police of Santa Cruz was given to 10 retired officers. They were honoured for their services, which ranged between 35 and 41 years.

Environmental Education issues its prized Blue Flags for the continent`s very best beaches every year - and there will be some long faces in Arona.

This year, 46 blue flags have been awarded to Canarian beaches, which is two fewer than in 2014. Tenerife has 13 flags, which is also two fewer - and Arona has lost out again! Nationally, 577 Spanish beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag,

nation. Tenerife’s winners were Real Club Nautico in Santa Cruz, San Telmo and Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz, Playa San Juan in Guía de Isora, El Médano, Playa La Arena, Los Gigantes sports harbour in Santiago del Teide, La Laguna’s Bajamar pools, El Socorro in Los Realejos, Playa del Troya beaches 1 & 2, Torviscas, Fanabe, and El Duque beach. Special mention must go to Playa La Arena’s flag, which will be unfurled for a 28th consecutive year.

The Spanish driver collaborated in an anti drink-driving campaign once before, during the 2007 season when he drove for McLaren. On Tuesday, Alonso presented the latest campaign in Barcelona, urging everybody to join the pact under the title “Únete al Pacto”. The aim is to raise awareness globally on the incompatibility of alcohol and driving, which is sponsored and supported by the British multi-national alcohol manufacturer, Diageo. It is the company behind famous alcohol

brands Johnnie Walker, Bailey´s and Guinness, among many others. Alonso´s team-mates with McLaren-Honda, Mika Häkkinen and Jenson Button, are also behind the campaign, offering their support to encourage zero consumption for drivers. A website has been set up where you too can “join the pact”, and share some of the emotion of driving that these champions support, which is at www. unete-alpacto.es The hashtag #únetealpacto has also been set up for use on social networks sites and, to date, Diageo has obtained nearly 1.5 million worldwide supporters for this initiative, which began in 2006. In Spain, the company has implemented specific actions aimed at young drivers explaining the incompatibility of alcohol and driving.

Caring needs more nurses NURSES’ union Satse Canarias has warned that health cutbacks in the credit-crunch years threaten the quality of care by focusing, mainly on reducing the nursing numbers. Satse Canarias said in a statement that the best healthcare systems worldwide maintain a doctor-nurse ratio of three nurses per doctor, while Spain’s proportion is an average 1.77. The union says there

must be an increase in nurses’ resources in both the health system and aftercare, which would provide adequate care to the people’s demands and needs. It also suggests that the proper training of nurses enables them to assume greater responsibilities in new working environments, and the union is calling on the Spanish Government to raise the health budget to allow for this.

Brussels anyone?

The editor says...

Say what you see

A FEW old friends of mine are currently enjoying a week’s rest after a couple of months of hard labour. And for one or two of them, literally hard Labour!

They’ve been covering the UK election and have been worked to the bone. Can you imagine spending every day with a trough of politicians? If it’s a gaggle of geese and a pride of lions, why not a trough of politicians? To keep themselves amused and also to maintain their sanity, they have been playing a variety of games. The standard “stick in an act’s famous songs” in a report is always a popular one, as is the “David Beckham” contest. They give it a different name but the idea is the same. You simply have to guess how many times the interviewee says the same

saying. With David it was always “you know”. I interviewed him once after a game and I lost count at 20. The new fun game is Catchphrase Bingo. You simply write down five sayings before you hear a politician speak and the first one to mark off all of them wins. It’s a lot of fun and passes the time during another boring speech. I thought of this during the week. The first proper calima and heatwave brought out the same moans and groans from the same people who are always too cold during a Tenerife winter. Where do these people want to live? Seriously, it’s like living with a host of Goldilocks’. So when the next dust storm hits, give Catchphrase Bingo a whirl. I’ll go for “My throat is killing me”. “Where has Gomera gone?”. “It’s too hot to work”. “I can’t sleep at night” and my favourite: “I’ve never known it so hot over here.”

ANOTHER new route has been added to the everexpanding list of airports connecting with Tenerife.

Brussels Airlines has confirmed that a weekly service from Brussels Airport to Tenerife South will start in October. World route development consultants ASM has been working in partnership with Turismo de Tenerife and Brussels Airlines over the past year to contribute to the decisionmaking process of the

assisted in our own analysis and decisionmaking.” Stephanie Wear Pintado, External Advisor, Economic Promotion at Turismo de Tenerife, said: “We are delighted to welcome this new service with Brussels Airlines. “It not only acknowledges the demand for Tenerife but also the demand for a premium cabin-offering on this route, serving not only the local business and leisure markets but also the connecting traffic from the Brussels Airlines network. “Being able to dem-

onstrate this market helped build our case with Brussels Airlines, and it gave more focus to our discussions for this new flight.” Aidan Mooney, Vice President Consulting at ASM, added: “We have worked closely with Turismo de Tenerife to assist them in building their portfolio of airlines serving the Island and offering the differential on-board product the market demands. “We are delighted to have been involved in another success for the Island as they continue to build their air-service offering.”

Lions roaring again INDIA’S Asiatic lion population is on the rise, from 411 in 2010 to 523 so far this year, according to the latest census.

Gir forest, in the western state of Gujarat, is the only home to this breed and, once widespread in Gujarat, their numbers dropped to a mere dozen in the early 20th Century, mainly through hunting and drought. But their population

airline to add this nonstop service. Flights will be operated with the A320 aircraft, offering travellers a choice of four travel classes: Check&Go, L i g h t & R e l a x , Flex&Fast and Bizz&Class, to meet the differing needs of the Island’s visitors. Marnix Wouters, Manager Network Planning at Brussels Airlines, said: “Turismo de Tenerife were extremely proactive in demonstrating the market potential and demand for this new service, supported by detailed analysis from ASM, which

has soared in the last century, thanks to a lion-hunting ban and several preservation measures. The latest census, conducted earlier this month by 2,500 officials and volunteers, found 109 adult males, 201 adult females and 213 cubs over a 21,000sqkm area of Gujarat’s Saurashtra region - which includes Junagadh and 10 other districts. Forest official CN Pandey told BBC Hindi’s Ankur Jain that

the lions were photographed and tagged by GPS during the census. “Enumerators recorded unique identification marks like scars on the face, the shape of ears, tuft of hair on tail, colour, and belly folds.” he said. “Using all this information with location details, we removed overlapping and reached the final count.” But the increase in lion numbers has posed fresh challenges to their safety. Environmentalists say some

40% of the lions now live outside the forest area and 260 lions have died in the past five years. It is believed that open wells and live wires on farms, plus poachers and passing trains and trucks have turned the Saurashtra region into a “death field for the Asiatic lion”. Also, man-animal conflict has grown, with the lions killing 14 people and wounding 114 others in the past two years

TUI will retire Thomson brand ANOTHER famous name is about to disappear from the High Street after more than 50 years.

British travel agent Thomson Holidays will soon vanish as part of a radical rebrand by its German-based parent company. The company, renowned for its package holidays, will be exiled following the TUI Group’s announcement that it will be phased out over the next two years. TUI, the world’s largest travel firm, now has 30 million customers worldwide and operates in 180 countries, from Jamaica to Cyprus, with more than 1,800 travel agencies. Thomson Holidays will be replaced by the TUI name across travel agents, planes and websites after the giant company said a single, recognisable global brand would help it compete with online rivals, other worldwide brands and smaller, independent, holiday companies. The rebranding will also include the disappearance of fellow British tour operator First Choice, marking the end of two of the nation’s best-known holiday brands. Thomson and First Choice catered for 5.2million holiday-makers last year, with the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands

and Greece among the most popular destinations. The Thomson name change will also apply to France and Germany, but its smiley-face logo, introduced more than 10 years ago, will live on. Thomson Holidays has been providing Britons with inexpensive holidays since 1962, when Canadian media mogul Roy Thomson launched the company’s first-ever package break to Spain. The first trip took just 82 passengers from Manchester to Palma, Mallorca. But Thomson owned its own charter airline, Britannia, and began to buy up independent travel agents. It capitalised on the fortunes of Britons emerging from post-war austerity, who were keen to switch from UK holidays to foreign travel. As the cost of air fares fell, package holidays were suddenly an option for millions of Britons seeking a guaranteed sunshine holiday. By the Eighties, Thomson Holidays was the market leader, selling more than three million package holidays every year in the UK. In 1998, Thomson Travel Group was floated on the Stock Exchange and, in 2000, it was acquired by German group Preussag, which was renamed Tui in July 2002. Last year Thomson’s owner, the London-listed TUI Travel, merged with German owner TUI AG,

thus forming the TUI Group. It is now merging, streamlining operations and simplifying its brands to save £70m in costs. The TUI Group, the world’s largest leisure and tourism company and valued at nearly £7bn, also intends to sell British hotel booking website LateRooms. Fritz Joussen, TUI joint chief executive, said: “It’s not a secret that I’m not a fan of having lots of brands.” He believes it could take two years before the Thomson name disappears forever because of the need for a careful approach with such a wellknown brand. More than half of UK holiday-makers booked their most recent trip themselves, rather than using a travel agent. And TUI hopes by trading as a single name will attract more online customers. The group maintains it will be “one global brand, with local roots” and promises to ensure it doesn’t “lose the benefits of our local brand equity”. But TUI must know the Thomson name is so well recognised by the British public that the decision to scrap it is risky. According to Marketing Week and YouGov’s BrandIndex, it ranks 10th among travel companies, above fierce rival Thomas Cook.

INGANE YAMI GOLF

TOURNAMENT

This year marks the sixth annual Ingane Yami Golf Tournament here in Tenerife and the third consecutive year it has been hosted it at Costa Adeje Golf Course.

Organised by the staff at Pearly Grey Ocean Club with the help of resident golfer Stephen Moore, our aim is to provide a memorable and enjoyable day for the golfers and raise awareness and funds for Ingane Yami Children’s Village. The event is now firmly established on the Tenerife golfing

Airbag failure sparks millions of car recalls THE airbag nightmare of Japanese car-makers Toyota and Nissan, has returned with a vengeance, and includes Honda as well.

Toyota is recalling 250,000 cars in the UK, amid a worldwide 6.5 million to check airbags linked to six deaths. Toyota is bringing in an additional five million vehicles for checks in the wake of a scandal surrounding airbag-supplier Takata, while Nissan accounted for the rest of the total figure. The six deaths have been linked to the defective Takata airbags, all on cars made by Honda, which announced disappointing profit forecasts last month, citing high quality-related costs. Wednesday’s announcements by Japan’s three leading manufacturers raise to around 31 million the number of vehicles recalled worldwide since 2008 over Takata airbag inflators, which can erupt with too much force. A Toyota spokesman told Sky News that the number of cars affected by the latest recall in Europe was in the region of 1.2 million throughout 35 models - and the company believed around 160,000 were affected in the UK. Nissan said 100,263 vehicles, built between 2004-2007, were being recalled in the UK. The models include the Navara Pickup, Tino, Patrol Pick Up, Almera, Terrano II, and X-Trail, while Nissan’s statement added: “We plan to begin notifying customers in June. “Nissan dealers will test the inflators and replace them as necessary. This recall will be carried out at no cost to customers for parts or labour.” Takata’s airbags have been subjected to reg-

ulatory scrutiny and previous recalls of at least 17 million other vehicles, made by 10 car-makers. The airbags have also been linked to dozens of injuries. High humidity has been identified as being a primary cause of the company’s airbag propellant becoming volatile. Takata was threatened with legal action by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last year when it failed to support an American-wide recall of vehicles fitted with its airbags. The company later produced an open letter to the people of America in which it insisted public safety was its top priority. Its chairman and chief executive pledged that Takata was working hard to test and replace airbags deemed to be a potential risk. The letter added: “Our airbags have deployed safely in more than two million auto accidents around the world since we began producing them in 1987, saving many thousands of lives. “In 2014 alone, thousands of serious injuries and deaths have been prevented worldwide by Takata airbags.” Gordon Trowbridge, US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spokesman, said Toyota and Nissan, as well as Japanese government officials, had been in contact with the safety agency over the last few days, and NHTSA will soon announce “significant new steps” related to accelerating Takata recalls. Trowbridge added: “While precise root cause remains undetermined, the clear association with high humidity has suggested that moisture and time are factors in this defect.”

Smuggler caught with youngster in her suitcase

A TEENAGE woman has been caught attempting to smuggle an eight-year-old Ivorian child in a suitcase across the border into Spanish territory in North Africa.

The child was in a case wheeled by a 19-yearold through a pedestrian crossing from Morocco into the small Spanish-governed territory of Ceuta. When civil guards asked the Moroccan woman to open the suitcase, the boy said immediately in French: “My name is Abou.” The teenager had aroused suspicion at the Tarajal crossing into the Spanish north African enclave as she seemed uncertain on her approach to the pedestrian checkpoint. The guards ordered her to place the suitcase on the scanner, and the screen operator saw the unmistakable outline of a human form inside. The young woman was arrested for the attempted smuggling of the boy, who was checked by medics and handed over to the Juvenile Prosecutor’s office. Considering the child may have spent considerable time zipped up inside the case, a civil guard said: “It could have ended in tragedy.” The boy was checked by a medical team and is now in the hands of

child-protection authorities in Ceuta, who will attempt to identify him and ascertain his family connections. Later that same day, a 42-year-old man from the Ivory Coast was detained at the same post. And although he had Spanish residency papers issued in the Canary Islands, the guards asked about his family and showed him a photograph taken of Abou in the suitcase. Before long, the man confessed to trying to have his son smuggled into Spain. “I just wanted to take him to the Canaries with me,” said the man, identified only as A.O. He was arrested and will testify before a judge on suspicion of human trafficking. The Moroccan woman, identified as F.E.Y., was also arrested. Every day, thousands of women cross the border from Morocco into Ceuta and Spain’s other enclave, Melilla, to collect goods from Spanish businesses and carry them back home. Spanish border patrols caught 12,549 illegal immigrants last year - most of them in Melilla and Ceuta. For West African countries’ migrants heading for Spain, there are two dangerous and long routes to reach Morocco. One is an inland route, crossing Mali and Algeria before entering northern Morocco and heading for the forests near one of the Spanish enclaves.

From there, many attempt to scale the six-metre wire fences, smuggle themselves into Spain or pay to cross the Strait of Gibraltar in a small boat. The other method is to travel up the coast of Senegal and Mauritania. Between 2005 and 2006, some 30,000 subSaharan immigrants reached the Canary Islands in long, narrow fishing vessels. The civil guard said it was possible that A.O. reached the Canaries in that manner, now having become a resident of Gran Canaria. The United Nations’ ACNUR refugee organisation estimated that between 1998 and 2011, some 20,000 migrants drowned in the waters between North Africa and Spain. Spain has been criticised by organisations such as Amnesty International and the Council of Europe for handing migrants who jump the fence over to Moroccan authorities without any due process, or offering them the opportunity to request asylum. In Ceuta, a judicial inquiry is ongoing into the role of civil guard officers in the drowning of 15 migrants on 6th February last year. A group of Africans attempted to swim around a breakwater, marking the border between Morocco and Spain, as Spanish guards fired smoke canisters and rubber bullets in their direction.

‘Foreign’ Canaries love to be taught

A NEW survey this week demonstrates the diversity and success enjoyed by the Islands’ higher education system. The two Canarian universities, despite being in one of the smaller communities, are among the highest in the education institutions of Spain in having a larger number of foreigners registered. According to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, the total of 2.460 foreign students makes the Canaries the fifth region, behind Madrid, Cataluña, Valencia and Andalusia.

During the current academic year, the University of La Laguna (ULL) have students from 63 different nationalities in its classrooms. Of these, 92 were from Italy, Venezuela: 67 enrolled; Germany: 66 young people enrolled and Argentina has 45 students. Figures from the Analysis and Planning Office (GAP), show Tenerife’s academic institution has a diverse selection of students from the likes of Palestine, Nigeria, Iceland, Pakistan, Russia, Latvia and Lithuania, among other territories.

Asylum-seekers: UK is seeking a fair deal BRITAIN, which could be forced to take in at least twice the current 30,000 who seek asylum there each year, will fight plans to force EU states to take their “fair” share of migrants.

Brussels is planning to employ emergency ways of dealing with large numbers of people entering the bloc, according to The Times. The proposal has been drawn up by the European Commission in response to the deadly people-trafficking from Libya, which has seen hundreds drown off the coast of Italy. Many of those crossing into Europe from Africa or Turkey seek asylum as refugees, saying they come from countries affected by war or other crises. The Times said all 28 member states would be obliged to make a “fair and balanced contribution by taking in persons in clear need of international protection”. If so, it will involve Europe putting in place a “mandatory and automatically-triggered relocation system”. But the Home Office insists that any attempt to impose a nonvoluntary quota will be resisted, which would almost certainly put Britain on a collision course with EU leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Needless to say Germany, where more than 200,000 applied for asylum last year, supports the plan. A Home Office spokesman said: “The UK has a proud history of offering asylum to those who need it most. But we do not believe a mandatory system of resettlement is the answer. “We will oppose any EU Commission proposals to introduce a non-voluntary quota. Our focus must be on targeting and stopping the callous criminals

who lie behind this vile trade in human beings. “Therefore, we will continue to focus our efforts on enhancing work between the lawenforcement agencies, working within the countries of origin and transit, and establishing a more effective process of returning illegal migrants.” A clash with Mrs Merkel would come at a time when Prime Minister David Cameron is beginning efforts to renegotiate Britain’s relationship with Brussels ahead a promised 2017 in/out referendum. A draft United Resolution drawn up by the UK, authorising the use of military action against peoplesmuggling networks operating from Libyan waters, will soon be examined by the UN. Federica Mogherini, EU foreign and security policy co-ordinator, will present the proposals, calling for the “use of all means to destroy the business model of the traffickers”. Royal Navy flagship HMS Bulwark, sent to the Mediterranean by Mr Cameron to assist with operations at the height of last month’s crisis, could be involved, as well as helicopter gunships putting traffickers’ vessels out of action. A number of EU member states, including Britain, France and Spain, are believed to be ready to contribute to the mission, which will be led by Italy. The operation is opposed by the Libyan authorities. The Times says the number each EU country could be required to accommodate will be based on their GDP, population, unemployment and previous intake rates.

Ebola crisis ends in Liberia at last

Clean bill of health! LIBERIA, the most-affected country, has been declared free of the Ebola virus by The World Health Organisation (WHO) after having no new cases in 42 days.

The BBC was informed by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf that Liberia had “crossed the Rubicon” and would be celebrating a concerted effort to stem the disease. More than 4,700 deaths from Ebola have been recorded in Liberia, and neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone continue to fight the outbreak. Tragically, Ebola has claimed over 11,000 lives across the region since last year. The WHO regards a country Ebola-free after a 42-day period without a new case - twice the maximum incubation period. The last confirmed death in Liberia was on 27th March, and on Saturday, the World Health Organisation said in a

statement: “The outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Liberia is over.” President Sirleaf told the BBC: “We will celebrate our communities which have taken responsibility and participated in fighting this unknown enemy and, finally, we’ve crossed the Rubicon. Liberia indeed is a happy nation.” Officials say Ebola was eventually conquered in Liberia through a collective effort. Care centres and hand-washing stations were set up to try to halt the disease, which spreads through contact with sick people. Billboards went up with slogans such as “Ebola is real”, “Wash your hands and don’t touch” and “Don’t

be the next victim”. Monrovia resident Emmanuel Tokao wrote on a BBC Facebook page: “I’m firstly grateful to God, who I believe brought us back to normality.” At the height of the outbreak, he said, “ambulances would either come for a dead body or sick person. It reminded me of the war days”. Liberia lost around 250,000 lives in a civil war, which ended in 2005. In Monrovia, the BBC’s Jonathan PayeLayleh, says the President gave a sense of how traumatised the outbreak remains after the outbreak. In an address to the nation on Saturday, she said: “Even today, if you hear

an ambulance siren, you shake a little bit.” Although Liberia has now been declared Ebola-free, correspondents say the outbreak will have a long-term impact on the country’s fragile economy. The current outbreak is the deadliest in history. Initially, it centred on Guinea’s remote south-eastern region of Nzerekore in early 2014, and later spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone. Despite the Liberian euphoria, the WHO warns against complacency. Its statement warns; “There is a high risk that infected people may cross into Liberia over the region’s exceptionally-porous borders.”

Whistl-stop shock THE Whistl postal service, in trouble financially after losing a potential investor, has suspended its door-todoor delivery service in London, Liverpool and Manchester. The former TNT Post company is consulting 2,000 workers about redundancy following last month’s decision by LDC, a division of Lloyds Banking Group, not to fund its expansion plans. Whistl will continue to provide a service, but will revert to using the Royal Mail for the “final mile”. Shares in Royal Mail rose 3.3% after the news was announced. Last month, LDC, decided against investing in Whistl because of “ongoing changes in UK postal market dynamics, and the complexity of the regulatory landscape”. Whistl said then it would hold back from expansion, yet planned

to continue its existing service. The company said: “Following the announcement from LDC that it would not proceed with the proposed investment ... to fund further roll-out of E2E [end-to-end], we have now commenced an extensive review of the viability and potential for the roll-out of an e2e postal delivery service in the UK.” Whistl will begin consultations with employees affected by the suspension of the endto-end service, and with their union representatives. The Manchester Evening News carries what it believes is a copy of the letter to employees, which says most of the staff were on zero-hours contracts and will not be paid during the consultation process. Community, the recognised trade union at Whistl, says members

are “extremely worried for their futures”. Les Bayliss, National Officer at Community, said the union would work with the company to try to save jobs: “We will be doing all we can to identify a viable way forward for the business that safeguards our members’ jobs,” he added. “We should be clear that this is a suspension of the business, not a termination of it, so we will be looking for the company to work with us to identify sustainable options to continue operations as soon as practically possible.” One Manchesterbased employee contacted by the BBC said the news had come “completely out of blue ... grown men were crying this morning. It was heart-breaking”. He added: “It was a brilliant job - we loved our job. We will all have

to go back on the dole now.” In the past, the Royal Mail complained that competitors such as Whistl operated at an unfair advantage because they did not have to provide delivery to the whole country for a single price. A spokesman said: “As the universal service provider, Royal Mail is ready to accept the additional volumes into our network, and we will ensure delivery meets our usual high standard of service. “We are liaising with Whistl to make certain customers aren’t impacted in any way.” Whistl changed its name from TNT Post last year as part of a 2011 separation agreement with its former owners. It began delivering in West London in April 2012, later rolling out its end-to-end service in Manchester and Liverpool.

MANY letters I receive refer to the issues of “holiday rental” or “touristic rental” (alquiler turístico). I have written in previous articles about these type of contracts (letting agreements subject to Tourism Law).

I will return to this topic in future columns, but for now, I consider it interesting to discuss the difference between “seasonal renting” (arrendamiento por temporada) and “touristic rental or holiday rental (arrendamiento turístico). The Letting Contract Law (LAU) mentions in article 3 the “seasonal rental” (alquiler o arrendamiento por “temporada”) which, I under-

15th May - 21st May 2015

Seasonal and tourism rental

stand, is different from the “touristic rental”. Somehow, the touristic rental is a seasonal rental, but a seasonal one is not necessary a touristic one. In other words, Law 4/2013 (that modifies the Letting Agreement Law) pretends to exclude the Letting Agreement Law (LAU) - those letting contracts which, despite being seasonal agreements, are similar to touristic contracts. To be considered “touristic” and excluded from the LAU, four requirements are needed: 1. To include a total furnished property, ready to be used immediately 2. To be commercialised through tourism channels 3. To have profitable means 4. To be subject to the specific rules of the sector Touristic accommodation not regulated by the LAU are those which include complementary services (i.e. hotel services) such as periodical cleaning, laundry, reception, and all included in the price.

This means that the main difference between “seasonal rental” and “touristic rental” would be the services included in the latter. In the “seasonal”, the lessor cedes the temporary use of a house for a certain price without any “service”. On the other hand, the characteristic of “tourist” contract is the inclusion of the services received by the lessee. But there could be differing opinions in this

respect. Among them, those which consider that “touristic” and “seasonal” are the same

type of contract. This would be very important at the time of applying Tourist Law of

LAU in every case (with all the consequences in favour or against the interests of lessor and lessee). This is my opinion, subject to a better one. Major Chinese fraud assisted by Spaniard A SPANISH expert in Customs formalities was advising members of a Chinese fraud plot, which has been smashed.

Raids in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia saw 79 people arrested on conspiracy to defraud the Treasury.

The fraud was worth a staggering 14 million euros in VAT and duties in 2013 alone. Sources have revealed that the crime was directed from China by the heads of an organisation, led in Spain by a trusted married couple from that country. They are understood to have recruited a tax advisor or administrative manager, who was

able to hoodwink Customs. The raid was part of a joint Central Operational Unit (UCO) search, carried out by the Guardia Civil and the Tax Office. It was code-named “Snake” and has dealt a major blow to the organisation, with the arrest of so many people. In addition to the wide deployment of

UCO agents, 83 officers were utilised by the Tax Agency, 40 of them from the Customs Surveillance Service of Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona and central services. According to sources, the Tax Agency has already discovered 50 companies used for criminal purposes. These include moneylaundering, counterfeiting and market manipulation.

LAST week’s election result had people all over the UK wondering just how the pollsters managed to get it so spectacularly wrong.

The Conservatives won an outright majority of 12 seats, confounding all expectations that another coalition government - or even a second polling day - was on the cards. The result had a profound effect on Sterling. But now that all the campaign billboards have been removed, let’s not forget that events outside the UK will also play

15th May - 21st May 2015

Why the Blues were so good for Sterling a part in the Pound’s performance. In this Market Analysis, we look at what to expect from the unexpected this week. Britain recovers from election fever Sterling behaved a little erratically last week because of the General Election. Ahead of the 7th May poll, the British Pound was a little above neutral as bookies, pundits and pollsters alike agreed that the election outcome was too close to call. However, Thursday evening’s shock exit poll, showing a decisive Tory win, gave Sterling a firm bounce. GBP/ USD soared to a threemonth high and EUR/ GBP fell to a 10-day low. Having had the weekend to collect

itself, the market seems to have settled a bit now. But in the longer term, expect David Cameron’s commitment to a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU to set the market quivering with fear as it contemplates the consequences of a Brexit. The formation of the new Cabinet aside, the UK is in for a busy week as the Bank of England’s latest interest rate announcement happened on 11th May, and the Bank’s second inflation report of 2015 was scheduled for Wednesday. No one is expecting changes from the Bank, but the inflation report will be scanned by investors looking for revisions to growth forecasts and updates

Santa Cruz has growth at last

THERE are now more businesses in Santa Cruz than at any time since the Credit Crunch seven years ago. The Tenerife capital lost more than 20% of the companies it accommodated in 2007 and since then, the number of businesses registered with the Social Security has been declining gradually. However, the green shoots of recovery have been evident recently and the trend is reversing. Statistics from the

Canarian Institute of Statistics (Istac), shows there were 6,230 businesses in March - a rise of nearly 200 when compared with the same month in 2014. Although the difference is still small, experts believe the number of companies will increase during 2015. Interestingly, almost 90% of the companies listed in Santa Cruz are registered under the “offering services” sector. The construction sector was hardest hit by

the Credit Crunch and that sector has lost over half of the registered businesses since 2007. But again, there has been a rise over the last 12 months. In March this year there were 381 companies registered against the 365 registered in March 2014. Of the companies registered in the Social Security, 5,321 have between one to nine employees, which means 85% of the businesses are sole proprietors or small companies.

on inflation. The Office for National Statistics releases industrial production and labour figures this week. The hope is that the labour figures will show the average wage growth has improved - both for its own sake and as an indicator that interest rates could be raised later in the year. The first letters of the Greek alphabet are not “IOU”… but they could be “IMF” The euro continues to be stressed by the failure of Greece and its European creditors to reach any agreement in their negotiations. The next Eurogroup meeting was scheduled on Monday (11th May) - a day before the deadline for Greece’s next repayment to the International Monetary Fund. Even so, early last week the plucky euro made slight gains against a soft US dollar and Pound, only to run out of puff when the UK stuck to the Conservatives’ economic plan and the US unleashed a positive jobs’ report. The euro ended the week a little lower against currencies like the Japanese yen and Russian rouble. The European Commission’s datagatherer, Eurostat, issued its preliminary estimate of first quarter GDP numbers on Wednesday. Survey data suggests that economic activity picked up a bit in the first three months of

the year, and consensus estimates placed quarterly growth at 0.5%. Aussie battler tests Greenback The US dollar suffered for most of last week and added to a long stretch of corrections which started in April. However, the Greenback’s allure may have been refreshed last Friday after a positive non-farm payrolls’ report cast it in a flattering light. The dollar recovered some of its losses against the Pound and the euro in the wake of the report. But against the Australian dollar, its performance was a little more mixed, with both crosses ending the week in negative territory. Across the Atlantic, investors will be looking at the releases of retail sales (Wednesday) and industrial production today (Friday) for updates to the state of the US economy. Last week, US job growth rebounded and the unemployment rate fell to 5.4%, almost a seven-year low, which indicates the labour market is bouncing back from a disappointing

first quarter. Next week’s data reports should provide hints as to whether the signs of weakness in the US economy were only temporary. Franc speaking from SNB’s Jordan The Swiss franc hit the headlines last Friday after Thomas Jordan, the Swiss National Bank’s chairman, told a conference that it was “overvalued” and that the central bank was ready to take action if necessary. “In case there is a necessity to intervene in the foreign exchange market to influence monetary conditions, we will take it,” Mr Jordan told attendees - a message that was echoed by other SNB policy-makers. Man & Beast with Martin Clunes

15th May - 21st May 2015

Frid a y

ITV1, 21.00

Martin’s travels take him onto Ko Yao Noi in South East Asia. It is a popular tourist spot, but it also has a traditional agricultural economy work where people have to work hard to survive. He meets Sarawut, a hard working pigtail macaque monkey, one of the biggest and most agile members of the monkey family. Because they live in thick dense forests they are spectacular climbers, which makes Sarawut the ideal candidate for the job of scaling the 100 foot trees to pick coconuts. Pigtail Macaques are so intelligent scientists have been able to train them to gather rare botanical samples from inaccessible corners of the world. Sarawut has been trained to pick only the ripe coconuts and once he has one in his little hands he twists it around until it snaps off. After training, Sarawut cost his owner Bangchit around US$500, but because he can make his owner up to $30 a day the monkey paid for himself in less than a month. Unfortunately the number of pigtail macaques is decreasing because their meat is considered a delicacy. The thing that is saving them is their value as coconut pickers. Martin goes night fishing in the Nagara River in Japan where cormorant fishermen have worked for more than 1300 years. He meets Tetsuji Yamashita, one of only six imperial fishermen in the world. They go fishing at night because this is when the fish are half asleep. The light from the braziers draws the drowsy fish up to the surface, ready for the cormorant to strike. The cormorant can dive to a depth of 150 feet and manoeuvre at terrific speeds. Martin dines on their catch of sweet fish at the end of the night’s work. On Martin’s farm in Dorset he raises lamb and beef, which is sold by Frampton’s the local butcher’s shop in Bridport. An animal lover, and meat eater, Martin says his animals have been raised in a controlled environment like generations of domesticated animals before them and when the time comes they are killed as humanely as possible. “We’ve got a tiny herd of Dexter Cattle – they’re the smallest breed in Europe. They’re beef cattle and in due course the boys will be sent for slaughter. But that doesn’t mean that I show them any less love,” Martin says. Killing animals bred for the table is one thing, but killing wild animals for the pot stirs up very different emotions for Martin as he meets one of the surviving members of the ancient Matagi tribe of northern Japan. The Matagi hunted and killed the Asian black bear partly for their own safety, but also as a source of food. Takashi Yoshikawa has hunted more than 150 bears in his life - 70 of which he killed single-handed. He still hunts bears, and shows Martin the scars from his encounters. Martin is disturbed to see two bears Takashi keeps in a cage in his backyard. Takashi tells Martin these bears are here because he shot their mother in an act of self-defence, not realising at the time that she had two small cubs. There are more than 15,000 Asian black bears wandering wild in Japan, and their numbers are growing. Bear attacks on humans are not uncommon, even in towns and cities. Takashi invites Martin to join him for a meal of bear casserole. But Martin has to politely refuse. After seeing the two bears in a cage in Takashi’s back yard, he can’t bring himself to eat one of their relatives. Martin travels onto the Himilayas looking for elephants, and to learn more about the mahout profession, which is four thousand years old and still passed on from father to son. In the village of Sauraha where the elephant is a common sight, Martin meets Bharat who has been a mahout for 19 years, nine of which he’s spent with his current elephant, 12 year old Rum Cali. As her mahout, Bharat sees more of Rum Cali than his own family. Luckily Ram Cali and her friends in Sauraha are no longer called on to work in the harsh environment of the logging industry. Instead they carry tourists. On the day Martin visits Rum Cali has got the day off, so he and Bharat and I take her for a bit of a treat - a cooling wallow in the river.

Mary Berry’s Absolute Favourites BBC2, 20:00 Cookery series. Mary draws on inspiration from some of her earliest and fondest memories from her childhood holidays and regular trips to the British seaside. To start, Mary prepares some delicious goats cheese and shallot tarts with a different, but delectable, walnut pastry - perfect for a picnic hamper or day out at the sea. To follow, a family favourite - her right royal crab and cod fishcakes with tomato salsa, followed by a special dinner party classic of sea bass with brown shrimp and caper sauce. As well as cooking her seaside favourites, Mary visits the Botany Bay on the Kent coast where she indulges in one her favourite seaside passions, prawning, before cooking up a new dish of seafood linguini. Finally, Mary visits an ice cream parlour in Broadstairs that has hardly changed since she was a child. This inspires her to create her favourite ice cream treat a knickerbocker glory.

Cornwall: Walking Through History Channel 4, 19:00

In the late 18th century there was a sure-fire way to earn a living along the Cornish coast: smuggling. The tiny secretive harbours, beaches and secluded coves were ideal for the infamous illicit imports: brandy for the parson, tobacco for the clerk... It’s also great walking country, as Tony discovers in his four-day trek along the stunning coastline between Plymouth and Falmouth. And the facts are e x t r a o r d i n a r y. Half the brandy drunk in the country in the 1780s had been smuggled in through Cornwall. The smuggling business was so huge that it threatened the national economy. Tony discovers why so many people were involved in the trade, and why everyone else turned a blind eye. Along his route, visiting such beauty spots as Lantic Bay and Polperro, he encounters all sorts of reminders of the trade.

Twenties and thirties New York produced the best songs ever written according to presenter and journalist Nicky Campbell. In this film he journeys to Manhattan to explore his lifelong musical passion for the golden age of song-writing when the music of packed Broadway theatres fused with the sounds of Harlem’s raunchy jazz clubs. Nicky sings, plays the piano and strums his ukulele as he unpacks six timeless love songs that he believes ‘map every contour of the human heart in just three minutes.’ And in celebrating the dazzling lyrics, unforgettable tunes and thrilling rhythms, he also discovers the troubled geniuses who wrote them: from George Gershwin, the gifted prodigy son of Jewish immigrants, to Fats Waller, Harlem’s larger-than-life lothario, and Cole Porter, sparkling socialite with a secret double life. Along the way Nicky meets a colourful cast of characters: singer/ songwriter Annie Lennox who shares Nicky’s passion for this music; hip hop artist Baba Brinkman who raps Lorenz Hart’s 1926 lyrics to Manhattan; multi-platinum selling singer Michael Feinstein, close personal friend of Ira Gershwin; jazz singer, Harlem resident and Fats Waller enthusiast Michael Mwenso; David Lahm, son of the first successful female lyricist Dorothy Fields; and 81 year-old cabaret singer Marti Stevens, close friend of the late great Cole Porter. Nicky’s six chosen songs are: ‘Manhattan’ - Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart’s witty and playful 1925 tribute to a young couple falling in love; ‘The Man I Love’ – George and Ira Gershwin’s haunting and bluesy early torch song; ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’ – Fats Waller’s playful and ambiguous 1929 theme tune of naughty Harlem; ‘Night and Day’ –1932 classic of passion beneath-the-surface which Nicky plays on Cole Porter’s own piano; ’The Way You Look Tonight’ – written for Fred Astaire to serenade Ginger Rogers in the 1936 hit comedy ‘Swing Time’; and ‘The Night we Called It a Day’ –the ultimate break-up song, written for Frank Sinatra in 1942.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell BBC1, 21.00 1806. Magic once existed in England, but it has long faded that is until the reclusive Mr Norrell is discovered in Yorkshire. He comes to London to offer the government his services as a magician - but rising politician Sir Walter Pole refuses to align himself with such a disrespectable art as magic. Disconsolate at his lack of success, Mr Norrell is set to return home, until news comes of the death of Sir Walter’s sickly, and wealthy, fiancée. Mr Norrell makes a dangerous pact with a mysterious Gentleman to restore her to life, proving magic respectable and establishing himself as the greatest magician in the land. Meanwhile, the charming and dissolute Jonathan Strange, more interested in drinking wine and winning the hand of the beautiful Arabella than reading dusty magical books, discovers that he too has magical powers.

Antiques Roadshow BBC1, 20:00

The Antiques Roadshow team visit Barrington Court in Somerset, a Tudor manor house which has the distinction of being the first grand property bought by the National Trust. Hilary Kay is enchanted by a toy model of Noah’s ark from the 1920s, complete with pairs of animals, while pictures specialist Dendy Easton spots a valuable Flemish Old Master painted on copper. A boot-sale bargain turns out to be an Elizabethan wine jug decorated with the face of a bearded man, while a £12 charity shop bracelet dates back to the Victorian era. This episode’s showstopper, though, is a 16th-century silver cup constructed around a carved coconut, complete with handles for greasy fingers. Glass specialist Andy McConnell puzzles over a vial of smelling salts with a mystery compartment, and Fiona Bruce commiserates with the owner of a collection of ceramic figures advertising a brewery company that met a sorry end after they first appeared on the Roadshow in 1993.

Scammers ITV1, 21.00 Britain is under siege from scammers who are using technology to rob us blind. They might not use a crowbar or wear a balaclava to break into our homes or steal our lives, but scamming is the “new” burglary and it is

out of control. Increasingly crime in the UK involves some form of cyber criminal and the Government is secretly putting millions of pounds into new specialist cyber cop units to identify, and catch, these 21st century crooks. Scamming now costs the UK economy at least £27 billion a year – and that’s just the reported crimes. This film investigates the problem and reveals some of the heart-rending stories of victims who’ve fallen foul of the scammers. Including a woman who fell for a romance scam which cost her £180,000 and a teenager who committed suicide after being scammed by a crook pretending to be the police.

The second episode of the controversial documentary series reveals more about the younger residents of Kingston Road in Stockton-onTees. It’s an area hit hard by recession and, for those reliant on benefits, new government regulations are making life even harder, especially for the youngsters who have no work and nothing to do but hang around the street. Motherof-six Julie is busy caring for her severely brain damaged son Reagan, who’s 15, while also struggling to keep her 12-year-old son on the straight and narrow at school. Just two days into term, he’s moved to a new school after throwing a lighter at a teacher. Local ‘King of the Kids’ Maxwell has fallen out with his girlfriend, who has kicked in his front door and punched him on the nose because he’s refused to watch The X Factor with her. Meanwhile, youngsters clash with an elderly resident who says he has lived on the street for more than 40 years and claims: ‘Kingston Road is the equivalent to Beirut, like hell.’.

Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer meet a family at loggerheads. On one side of the Oberoi family from Harrow is dad Charanjeet, and daughter Prahbleem, who love their family home and want to stay. But mum Ash and 14-year-old son Manraj want to move on. With a fridge freezer in the hallway and the kids sharing a bedroom, it’s easy to see why the house doesn’t work for any of them.

The drugs cupboard is raided and a forensic team is called in – one of whom is Matthew’s ex - who’s keen to get back together. Ryan returns - and Caitlin has a date with Luke. A midwife gets a marriage proposal. Newly qualified midwife Matthew Bunting is experiencing a kind of re-birth, having given up his life as a police constable in his mid 30s in the hope of finding something more meaningful. He is too warm and caring to be a cop. Arriving in his first job as a junior midwife at Easthill Park Maternity Unit, Matthew makes an instant impact on his new team members. They are led by recently divorced senior midwife Caitlin, witty and likeable junior midwife Lisa, the extremely no-nonsense senior midwife Pat and naïve trouble-maker Tash. Matthew has company from his former police buddy Ian who gets suspended from the force and lands a job in hospital security, while his nemesis comes in the shape of senior consultant obstetrician Luke.

One in 20 British children aged between five and 16 have serious behavioural issues, ranging from refusing to eat or do what they are told, to swearing, hitting and breaking things. In Born Naughty? family GP Dr Dawn Harper and consultant paediatrician Dr Ravi Jayaram help children with behavioural problems as well as their long-suffering parents, who often have to wait years for a definitive diagnosis and appropriate help. This time the doctors meet eight-year-old Bobby, who won’t eat anything except chocolate, sweets, cakes, chips, cheese, yoghurt and baked beans. Bobby says that anything else makes him feel sick and his parents, Sally and Craig, have tried everything. They’re worried about his unhealthy diet and tired of being blamed for his eating habits.

Tenerife Opera 2015. Ana Bolena Anna Bolena is the first work of Donizetti’s Queens’ Trilogy and is the essence of the dramatic bel canto that the composer would later repeat in Roberto Devereux, María Estuardo and, particularly, Lucia di Lammermoor. Donizetti applied all his talent to the psychological portrayal of his characters in this delightfully melodic piece. The all star cast features Mariella Devia (one of the greatest bel canto sopranos of the last forty years) in the leading role, Tenerife’s most international tenor, Celso Albelo, and mezzo-soprano, Alessandra Volpe, who returns to Ópera de Tenerife after her tremendous success last season in Nabucco.

Work? It’s a piece of cake I HOPE readers don`t take this the wrong way ... but I don’t get out much! Some would say it is tough working every night, but I am lucky enough to be in a business that isn’t exactly a slog.

Showbiz is a funny old game. However, the wise words of an old lady on a cruise ship always ring in my ears. She told me: “If you find a job you enjoy, you will never work another day in your life.” Never has a truer word been uttered. This week, I have taken a couple of days off and have thoroughly enjoyed getting out and seeing some shows. On Monday I called in at San Eugens to see my old pal Ray Wilde, who quite deservedly won the Best Compere title at the last Tenerife Entertainment Awards. Ray has been on

the Island for years, always maintaining a fabulous relationship with the audiences who go to see him. Even in the days before Facebook and social media took over everyone’s lives, he would always keep contact with his fan base. Back in the day, he was famed for writing his own comedy songs. And he will always be remembered for his “Yogi Bear” tune, which can be found on most of the karaoke databases around the Island’s show bars. His manner and style as a host is second to none, and that’s why he is resident in one of the most popular bars. Ray arrives at the venue long before he is scheduled to go on stage, and he spends his time talking to those who have already secured a seat for the evening’s entertainment. This is so important as a host. It really offers that personal touch and creates a connec-

tion with the audience before he even enters the stage. Ray presents a minimum of two shows a night with a wide variety of acts, and he has really put his mark on San Eugens. It was a pleasure to see a real professional at work. A little later, I ventured up the road to the Irish Rover, where Shaun Rooke is resident compere. He has been a well-established compere for years on the Island of Tenerife and he has also created a huge following of return customers in the Rover. He was also nominated in the Best Male Vocalist category in the TEAs in a year when his category had to sing live on the day, with the audience voting for the winner. Shaun wasn’t on stage when I arrived, because it was just after 11pm, and his show had already been presented

on stage and was in full swing. Scott Henderson was the billed act and was just 10 minutes into his one-hour show and clearly had the audience rocking. He is also a Tenerife award winner, but has worked predominantly as part of a duo. He made a name for himself at Leonardo’s Bar, in Las Americas, as part of popular duo Loaded, alongside Dylan Tennant. He then became Re-Loaded with Shiel Campbell in 2013. But recently, Scott decided to take the solo route and is treading the boards as a vocalist. After chatting with him after the show, he told me it was something he always wanted to do. He loved working alongside his friends, but the challenge of working alone was something he took on with vigour. Scott has an amazing range, with a talent for learning songs which are popular in the UK charts before most. Because of his ability to hit very high notes, he can take on songs by the likes of Sam

I HAVE had the great pleasure of standing beside DJ Si Palmer in Tramps this week. The DJ booth is a place where you can see everything that’s going on, and this guy really knows his onions.

He has recently locked on to Indie House, a new trend of music emerging. House music has so many sub-genres but is generally the same tempo: normally, 128 beats per minute. However, Indie House can range from 115128. It has deep house grooves and takes popular songs like Sweet Dreams by The Eurythmics and takes them to a new level. DJ Palmer has always been a trend-setter in Tramps and is always one of the first club DJs to exploit new sounds and remixes. He is a genius on the decks and it was an honour to watch him work this week.

Smith, Ne-Yo and even oldies like the Stylistics, which require a flawless falsetto vocal range. It was great to see Scott enjoying working solo, and at the end of the show he had the same number of people in the bar as at the start. Job done, 100%! Highlight of my week was seeing one of the Island’s finest. Elaine Alexander is by far the best vocalist on these Islands we call Canary. Fact! Her vocal range is endless, and her capability to take on any song is nothing short of outstanding. Elaine has won more awards than anyone and it is clear to see why if you have seen her work. I have never seen an artist open his/ her show with a ballad and bring the house down, as Elaine did last Tuesday. She totally blew the audience away with her rendition of I´ll Be There by The Jacksons,

a song covered by none other than Mariah Carey. I have to say, if I had a choice of who I would listen to singing that song, it would be Ms A all day long. Jessie J’s song Bang Bang has been around for a while, yet Elaine is the only singer I have heard perform it. She put it in her show around halfway through - and at the vocal height of the song, the audience burst into applause. You´re doing something very right when a spontaneous rapture like that occurs midsong. Elaine has vast experience and she is the singer all vocalists on the Island cannot fail to respect. She creates awe wherever she sings, yet remains so modest, gets on with her job and listens to her audience. She is the consummate professional, and an outstanding performer!

Health

By Val Sainsbury USING string to find out if you are in proportion might be a better way to see if you are overweight than working out your Body Mass Index (BMI).

A new study has revealed that measuring your height with a length of string, folding it in half and then seeing if you can get it round your waist easily could be a more defined way to find out if you are an unhealthy size. Today, medical professionals use the BMI

15th May - 21st May 2015

String’s the thing to sort out weight to decide whether a patient is at risk from disease because of his/her weight. However, the test has long been known to over-estimate the danger posed to those with heavy bone structures or large muscle mass, and under-estimate the risk to people who carry large amounts of fat around their middle. International studies have shown in the past that people are at a lower risk from heart disease if their waist measurement is less than half their height. This latest study, by Oxford Brookes University, surveyed the health of 2,917 16-yearolds. The Daily Telegraph

reported that it found one-third of those checked would have

been overweight if tested by the string method, yet were classified

as normal by the BMI test. Dr Margaret Ashwell, from Oxford Brookes University, said the study not only supported previous findings on the superiority of waist to height over BMI, but also showed the dangers BMI alone could pose when used in screening for heartrisk factors. “Checking that waistto-height ratio is less than 0.5 could not be simpler,” she said. “All that’s needed is a piece of string - not even a tape measure,” she said. Body Mass Index is checked by dividing a person’s weight in kilos by how tall they are in metres squared. But because it does not consider what oth-

er weight people might be carrying,well-muscled people are often classed as obese because muscle is considerably heavier than fat. The method places top-class athletes, sprinters and rugby players in the same weight and height grouping as people who do not exercise at all. Beyond saving lives, using the test could also save time and money for European health services, says the study. But there is resistance to changing the status quo because BMI has been the convention for so long. The research was presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Prague.

For goodness sake, let’s keep the heart pounding ANY activity that gets your heart pounding can delay the increase in fatty deposits by up to 15 years.

Bad cholesterol usually peaks in middle-age before dropping off. But those with higher fitness levels are better protected. Cholesterol is a fatty

substance found in the bloodstream. And too much can increase the risk of heart disease and other killer, cardiovascular conditions. Some 2.5million people in Britain take cholesterol-busting statins to stave off heart disease and stroke. But physical activ-

ity has been shown to cut excessively high levels of lipids in the blood. Confirmation that a healthy lifestyle leads to a healthy heart comes after a 35-year study of 11,500 American men. It assessed levels of total cholesterol, lowdensity lipo-

protein or “bad” cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein or “good” cholesterol and triglycerides, another type of fatty substance in the blood. Their cardio-respiratory fitness levels - the ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during workouts - were measured at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas. Men with lower fitness levels had a

higher risk of developing high cholesterol in their early thirties, while men with high fitness did not see this development until their mid-forties. And men with low cardio-respiratory fitness reached abnormal HDL and non-HDL cholesterol levels around their early twenties and midthirties respectively, while those with higher fitness saw normal amounts for life. Lead researcher Dr Yong-Moon Mark Park, from the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina, said: “These findings suggest improving cardio-respiratory fitness levels may delay the onset of dyslipidemia. Promoting this healthy lifestyle factor may also help reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.” Dr Paolo Boffetta, Professor of Medicine at New York’s Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, said: “Greater empha-

sis needs to be made on educating the public on the importance of exercise, and clinicians should help counsel patients on fitness regimes.” Experts agree diets that are low in processed foods, salt and red meat, but high in fruit and vegetables, boost heart health. Maureen Talbot, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “We already know regular physical activity can help to increase your ‘good’ HDL cholesterol level and has a valuable role to play in cholesterol control. “This study, of healthy men only, shows a good level of cardio-respiratory fitness can delay an increase in their cholesterol levels for a number of years. “High cholesterol is only one of a number of risk factors for heart attack and stroke, so it is important also not to smoke, eat healthily and keep your weight down as well as getting active.”

SMOOTH

Broadly speaking, it’s like cruising

By Vanessa Vee IT has become a bit of a joke about how many cruises I go on, but I actually got bitten by the ´cruise´ bug many years ago, namely on the Norfolk Broads, in East Anglia.

When I was a young ‘un, not many people ventured on holiday abroad, but the idea was slowly creeping in - and just look at the tourism industry nowadays! It has reached heights that were unimaginable in the Seventies. My parents are proud to boast that they first started going on the Broads 50 years ago, and have done virtually every year, with a few exceptions. And they STILL use the same company to hire their boats. I have many happy childhood memories of these holidays, and as I have now had my own family, and my parents aren’t getting any younger, we decided to join them on their last adventure. The hardest part of the journey, with a baby and a toddler, was to actually make our way to Norfolk. With Norwich flights not coinciding with the boat rental days, and also the high expense compared with other airports, we opted to go planes and trains. Children brought up in Tenerife don´t see “real” trains, so this was a highlight. We took a hotel for the night before embarkation, and the next morning was all action

stations. Everywhere you turn in the village of Wroxham, establishments are named Roy’s. There’s Roy’s Supermarket, Roy’s Bakery, Roy’s Fish and Chips … you name it, Roy’s in the business in some shape or form. Sticking to family tradition as always, we ventured to the supermarket to stock up on a week’s worth of provisions for seven of us - my family, my parents and my teenage niece. Once checked in at the boat company, we boarded our home for the week, the “Royal Diamond”. Some people confuse the Broads with canals, but the North Broads don´t tend to have locks, and, although you do see a small number of barges and yachts, motor-cruisers are by far the most popular means of floating transport. We had a seven-birth cruiser, with a double en-suite, two doubles with a shared bathroom, and a pull-out single in the lounge area. Mum and Dad, of course, were entitled to the largest, the double en-suite, and wouldn’t you know it, our room had no room to squeeze in the cot for my youngest, so off to the grandparents he went. Ha-ha - he doesn´t sleep at night, so this was a result for me! Hubby and I were sorted in one double, with daughter and niece in the other. We also had the use of a fully-equipped galley kitchen, complete with gas hob, oven, fridge and microwave, together with a roomy lounge area with put-up dining table, TV and DVD player. Relaxing is not part of my vocabulary, but this holiday just about

forces one to take a step back from the rat race. The speed limit on water is 7mph, and life just slows down a gear. As sad as it sounds, you find yourself birdwatching, feeding ducks and swans and gazing at the amazing properties backing on to the waterways. There is even a floating shop, if you come across it, which has daily produce, and an ice-cream boat to serve you alongside. And then there’s the Southern Comfort steam boat, to name but a few irregular sights. I am usually delegated breakfast cook, and there are sandwiches and salads for lunch. And selecting where to moor up for the night is usually where the evening meal takes place, usually by way of a restaurant, pub meal or a walk to the local takeaway. Snuggly bedding is provided to give you a perfect night’s sleep, and the cruiser is fitted with showers, though many mooring places have public shower blocks for hire. For me, the big thrill is strolling to the local bakers and butchers in the morning to stock up, bathing baby in the sink and, generally, just opting out of the normal routine, albeit for a short time only. The Broads bring back many childhood memories for me, and it’s a pleasure to be able to give these opportunities to my children. So much so that I´ve booked again. When a child asks you constantly if you can “remember when the ducks used to jump on the boat and tap at the window, Mummy”, it proves that it’s the little things in life that can make you smile. Tenerife Sunshine Travel have a Norfolk Broads holiday from the Island, based on two people sharing, including return flights, trains, hotel stays and four nights cruising from only 809 euros per person in July. Other dates, boat sizes and durations are also available on request. For more information and reservations, email travel@tenerifesunshine.com or call 922 751 867 (ext 1).

OPERATORS

By Carl from Robot

IF you’re looking for what’s new for guys this season, there is one rule for hair which must be followed and that’s “style”.

Whether it’s short and cropped, or slightly longer in length, there’s absolutely no “spikes” or “messy” looks around this year … just sleek and groomed is the way you should be having your hair cut. Keeping up to it means regular 3-4 weekly appointments to make sure it stays in shape, because letting it go over will just ruin the look. Make sure, too, that you are using the right products and do NOT use some cheap gel that’s hanging around. Your product should have slight hold but with a matte or greasy texture. Depending on the cut and the image you are going for, this should tell you which products

to use. A light matte wax will give you definition and that slight hold, whereas a greasytype product will create sleek and groomed hair. Most styling on guys now is taken away from the face - height at the front while smoother at the back. And don’t be afraid to take the sides really short. This will create a dramatic shape and enhance the longer section on top. But if you want a style that’s more versatile, be sure to keep the top

sections as long as possible. You can style the fringe to one side, or take the whole top section back - it’s up to you - but do make sure it’s not hanging in your face! These cuts are inspired by the fashions of the Forties and Fifties, when men styled their hair but didn’t rely on too many products because it was all in the cut. So the next time you are sitting in the salon chair, why not ask for something a little different? Choosing a new style makes a huge difference to any guy’s image, no matter what age. If you’re going to use a greasy product, this is best on dry hair. Just push your fingers through it as it dries, or blast quickly with a hair-dryer. Then apply the product of your choice, and don’t be afraid to use plenty. Remember, the look is “slick” and not ruffled.

By Monica Dyson HOW many people remember those evocative advert images towards the end of the Fifties of a lonely-looking Frank Sinatra lookalike on a dark, wet evening in London, puffing reflectively on a cigarette? The theme music, The Lonely Man by Cliff Adams, was hauntingly beautiful and did well in the music charts, reaching No.39. Not a lot could be said for the cigarettes, associated with loneliness and losers (not cancer in those days!), and they were withdrawn after a few years. The actor involved,Terence Brook - a non-smoker was one of the stars in

15th May - 21st May 2015

No more telly cigarette puffs

The Colditz Story film. Doing better were the adverts for Camel during the Eighties. These were endorsed by celebrities like John Wayne, who smoked six packs a day. The slogan which informed us that it was a “psychological fact that pleasure helps your disposition” didn’t do much for the stars in question, many of whom died from lung cancer, including Big John and Robert Mitchum. After a while they were dropped from the adverts in favour of Camel Man, a fictitious character who “did more than survive, he lives!” Adding that “Camel time is pleasure time!” Prior to those cigarette advertisements was one which was to become the most instantly-recognisable advertising icons in the world: Mar-

lborough Man. Created in 1954 and around for over 50 years, he was the most masculine of men, and Marlborough were the preferred smoke of cowboys. Yet their advertising in the early days was aimed at women, with men realising it was good to have a more macho image - and sales really took off! Cinema-going was big at the time, and our favourite stars made smoking look so glamorous and sexy that we wanted to emulate them. It was considered very sexy when the man lit two cigarettes at once and leant over to put one in the lips of his female companion! People tried to convince themselves that they looked so cool when they were smoking! Even popular songs of the day endorsed cigarettes. “A cigarette that bears lipstick traces, an airline ticket to romantic places” came from one of the most beautiful songs of all time: These Foolish Things. What an apt title if used to describe cigarettes! Smoking was everywhere. In the cinema there would be a cloud of smoke rising in front of the screen. Likewise in the theatre and on aircraft, until there was a smoking section at the back of the plane for those who couldn’t go a few hours without a drag! Who remembers the first all-inclusive holidays, when cigarettes were in a bowl on the dining tables? Thank goodness now for smoke-free cinemas, aircraft, buses, pubs and restaurants. And the good news is that it will soon be illegal for people to smoke in cars carrying children. You have only to watch old films to realise the enormity of smoking in those days. By the time health warnings had started to appear, many people had become completely addicted to them, finding it ex-

tremely difficult to stop. I remember starting work in the late Fifties. One of my colleagues expressed surprise that I didn’t smoke. “Oh, it’s great,” she said, and proceeded to take me to the ladies’ cloakroom to let me have a go, so I wouldn’t appear a complete novice if I were offered one in the office. From then on I became an occasional smoker, difficult when it was the fashion for people to chain-smoke when on a night out. But I managed to give up completely when pregnant with my first child. “It won’t last,” I was told. “As soon as you’ve had the baby, you’ll ask for a cup of tea and a cigarette!’ Happily I accepted the tea, but not another cigarette! And so, like many former smokers, I became extremely self-righteous and paranoid about anyone smoking near me, or in my house. Holidays abroad were sometimes like a game of musical chairs when diners were allowed to smoke

in restaurants at a table near me. Today, luckily, things have changed. There really does seem to be fewer smokers about, or is that just my imagination? Perhaps people have realised that at nearly £10 a packet, it really is an insane way to get through hard-earned money, even if they don’t seem bothered about dying prematurely. Or at best, having themselves, their house and their clothes smelling unpleasantly. “No Smoking Day” was 11th March, when it was hoped that people would finally decide what a stupid, dirty, anti-social and expensive hobby smoking actually is. Much has been documented about the effects of smoking on the human body, including lung disease, cancers, artery diseases, heartattacks and strokes. And recently, scientists at the University School of Medicine in Washington have also identified links to kidney disease, intestinal disorders caused by inadequate

blood flow and heart and lung illnesses not previously attributed to tobacco. They researched one million people over a 10-year period and concluded that they have seriously underestimated the risks of smoking. People who smoke have death rates three times higher than those who have never smoked. But I’m just wondering what effect these electronic cigarettes are actually having on the cessation of smoking? It seems that there is a shop selling them practically on every corner here in the UK. Do people not get addicted to the e-cigarette? They have certainly caught on with vaping, the word for ecigarette-smoking even making it into the next edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. And there again, with recent publicity about their actual safety, should they be allowed in public places? There’s a lot to be said for chewing gum, isn’t there!!

Get well soon, Katie WE know that many of you follow the story of Katie, our 14-yearold rescue horse who suffers from a painful condition of the hooves called laminitis.

He is presently living in a cage at Hospivet Sur and is, understandably, becoming depressed. Please can you help? All he needs is his paws bathing each day, and he really is a good boy. Please call Sue on 629 388 102 for more information about Tim and how you can help him. Let’s hope next week that we are writing that he has been sorted. Can you make it happen?

All the love in the world Your Emails

Dear Editor, May I use your letters’ column to reach out to Rotarians, residents, swallows and visitors, who miss out on the pleasure of Rotary Fellowship while they are in Tenerife? While the local Tenerife Rotary Clubs show great hospitality to visiting Rotarians, their business is conducted in Spanish, which restricts the enjoyment gained from attending these clubs. I am sure there are many Rotarians who would enjoy the opportunity of sharing fellowship if they could join regular meetings, conducted in their own language. This would be attractive to resident Rotarians, those who visit the Island for the winter and those who are here on holiday. I am, therefore, wondering if there is any interest in setting up a Rotary Fellowship Club in Tenerife, initially in the South. I would be pleased to hear from any Rotarians interested in taking advantage of such a club, and who may also be ready to take part in setting it up. If you are interested, please contact me in the first instance: David Chapman, david. pc@ntlworld.com. David Chapman 88 Wiston Avenue Worthing BN14 7PS B21 Paraiso Del Palm Mar Palm Mar 38632 Arona

THIS is one of many lucky dogs at the refuge who had so much fun on Saturday afternoon, experiencing the love of a human from one of our younger, valued supporters. It was an amazing afternoon, and we were totally overwhelmed by the number of people who supported our fund-rais-

er. And there was lots to see and do! We had a fun dog-obedience test, Mr and Mrs Dog 2015 competition, horse-riding, a small animal-petting farm with goats, rabbits, ducks, lots of very happy and excitable puppies, as well as music, a dance display, all the traditional fun at the fair, face-painting, cakes and

a bbq, stalls laden with bargains … and much more. And, of course, we had the photo competition with so many gorgeous pictures. We would like to thank everyone who helped on the day, and for the generous donations, which made this our best-event ever. We are so happy to have

your backing at the refuge, which enables to enable us to continue our valuable work with the dogs here in Tenerife. How to find us The refuge is situated at Granadilla’s Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER, the ecological park which houses the windmills.

Arts and Crafts, well wood you believe it...

THIS weekend’s annual Adeje Arts and Crafts Fair will focus on woodcraft work, with demonstrations in other specialities also scheduled in the town’s Plaza España. The event, organised as usual by the Council’s Department of Culture, starts at 10am tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday

and is open until 9pm, during which time there will be a series of activities open to the public. Young children will be treated to craft workshops, held by trained monitors from the Convivencia project, in the mornings. And music will also feature during the two-day

event, with performances from Grupo Boleros, from Armeñime, tomorrow at 12.30pm, and students and musicians from the Adeje Folklore school from 7pm. On Sunday, the Parranda from Grupo Boca del Paso will entertain the public in the morning and that evening, José Manuel Ramos will perform “Desde adentro” at 8 pm. Adeje’s Arts and Crafts Fair has been an annual event since 2000, with over 100 stalls selling Canarian crafts and handmade goods to the pub-

lic, made by local artists and artisans, as well as others from all over Tenerife and the other Canarian Islands. Many of the stalls celebrate the use of traditional craft methods, using materials such as wicker, wood, glass, resin and fabric, producing a range of items for sale, including traditional clothing, jewellery, carpets, hangings and musical instruments. There are also tasty food items such as honey and cheeses, plus a firm favourite - traditional biscuits and cakes

Fit for purpose?

By Sue McDonald WHATEVER the situation regarding your home, the furniture should always be fit for purpose. Therefore, if your house is a permanent home, it will not be furnished as though you live there for just 3-6 months of the year.

Equally, if you rent your property out, it is important that you consider all the relevant factors to ensure that it is suitable for rental, and that you do not overspend in maintenance or cleaning. For example, if the property is for your own use only, you can indulge yourself with pale sofas, plump cush-

ions and fragile ornaments. You know your own standards, and you know you will take care of your possessions. You will also need more storage than is necessary for people on holiday, and you might consider a nice sideboard or a cabinet for your treasures. However, if you rent your property out, you must be careful to restrict any personal items to those you

would not be upset to lose or break. You should also take into account that other people may not have the same standards as you, or may not take much care with sun-cream or spillages when they are on holiday. Intricate blinds or curtains are not appropriate for a rental situation. You should also consider safety, taking into account such items as trailing cords or glass

tables (which should always be made of tempered glass). If you live here for some of the year, and rent out the rest of the time, you need to find a balance between the two types of furnishings. A good solution is to have a lockable cupboard, in which you can store your personal bits and pieces to make your own stay more comfortable, while leaving it a little more bare, but

more practical for the rest of the time. As far as rentals are concerned, the person or company who clean your property between rentals will appreciate the fact that you have given some thought to the durability and ease of cleaning your property. For instance, a sofa upholstered in pale cloth would be a nightmare for them, whereas one in synthetic leather, or in fabric but a darker colour, will be easier for them to clean. This also reduces the downtime of your property for maintenance purposes. This type of sofa will also not be damaged or marked by mopping around the base. Equally, your cleaner will not appreciate delicate ornaments that may get broken or need a lot of dusting, or intricate items of furniture which can attract dust and dirt. Carpets are hard to keep clean, whereas tiles are easy to sweep

and mop. The rental market is extremely competitive at the moment, so it is important that your property looks clean and attractive, and has all the inventory required to make a stay there comfortable and pleasant. A tired sofa, uncomfortable beds or dirty curtains will not encourage tenants to rebook with you next year, and could be the reason that your neighbour gets more rentals than you! For a relatively small expenditure, you can refresh a tired property to look more appealing and, in the long run, reduce your downtime - and your cleaning and maintenance bills. So make sure your property is looking its best, and is practical and comfortable, and fit for purpose, whatever your situation. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo; call for an appointment and a no-obligation free estimate.

BASIC ANIMAL INSTINCT By Carl Pattison

STYLES come and go, and shapes go in and out of fashion. Yet there’s one theme that NEVER dates and always makes a statement, and that’s Animal Print. It has been around for years, dating back to the Twenties when it

was highly used. But it was real fur then! Since using genuine fur of any kind is shunned nowadays, and rightly so, for moral reasons. Fake fur is now so popular that it never seems to disappear from our fashion rails. From zebra to leopard, tiger to giraffe, animal print is here to stay. and it is used by High-Street brands to designer ranges. But there is a way to

wear it without it looking cheap or over the top. You must pick a statement piece. If you are wearing a top or jacket with print on, then stick to just this and don’t clutter it up by wearing a skirt (or trousers) as well. Keep it classy looking, and even if the item you are wearing isn’t expensive, it will look as though it is, as long as you are using just the one item. Okay, if you want to tie

the image up with an accessory, wear jewellery in the same pattern. If you want to pick a bag that matches, make sure it matches perfectly. Don’t let it clash because of a different tone or pattern. Clashing animal print can look good, say, if you mix it up, such as choosing leopard with zebra, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Try picking items that will stand the test of

time because animal print is here to stay. Go for classy, timeless, simple clothes that will blend in well with your wardrobe. And if you don’t want to go the whole way, look for shoes to bring out that animal vibe. The good thing about animal print is that it’s neutral and will go with any item. Just don’t mix it with another pattern. Be careful when buying this look, though, because sometimes, the print is put on to cow hide to seem even more realistic. Cow hair is animal fur, so wear animal print to show you care - and don’t go down the road of wearing the real thing. As beautiful as it appears on those animals in real life, you can look just as good without using the real thing. So get scouting out your statement pieces, and rock the fashion that will not go away. ANIMALS are here to stay.

Motoring

By Emma at Motorworld

I AM often asked what the rules and regulations are about driving while carrying goods such as shopping, flat-pack furniture etc, over here. Obviously, no one would want to transport an unsecure item which could, potentially, cause an injury during an accident. How many times have you seen cars filled to the brim with flat-pack boxes, or things sticking out of the window because they are too long to go in the car, etc? The law that regulates this, and the police who enforce it are not being pedantic. In a lot of situations, these can be a health or accident hazard in the event of a crash, say. Quite often, people are being stopped and fined by the police for carrying unsafe loads. There are strict rules on companies who transport goods in their vehicles as

15th May - 21st May 2015

Danger of carrying goods part of their job. And these are more and more often being checked by the police to ensure that they have the necessary paperwork for carrying the goods - and that the loads are safely secured to avoid injury. Spanish Traffic laws are quite complex but, possibly, this particular law is one of the most straightforward and logical, if you think about it. Firstly, nothing should be placed in your car that makes it unstable or unsafe to drive. This means spreading any load evenly so the vehicle is stable at all time. Anything being carried on the back seat should be secured by the seatbelt, or other suitable restraints such as a strap, or a restraint made for this purpose, to ensure it cannot move and injure or distract the driver. It is always important to concentrate on vehicles and obstacles around you when driving to avoid having an accident and worrying that the new cupboard you’ve just bought and

placed on the back seat could be a distraction if it moved. Or that it could injure the driver or passenger if one is being carried incorrectly. You should also remember that when transport- ing children and goods, t h e y c a n , a n d a r e , most i n quisit i v e and may s t a r t playing around with obj e c t s within

their reach. So it is better to store as much as possible in the boot, hatchback or, where appropriate, on a roof-rack or in a small trailer, if you h a v e one.

The alternative is to pay a company to transport and deliver the goods for you. It is forbidden by law to carry anything that protrudes from the vehicles, especially from the windows, which could hurt

another vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist. This is something that so often happens, and the police are currently clamping down on these issues. You may be lucky and just get a warning at that time or, if unlucky, a fine - and no way of transporting the offending object to your destination! It is also forbidden by law to carry heavy loads, as I have mentioned, without a restraining net. Some newer cars come with such nets, and they can also be purchased and fitted. Over the next few weeks, I will cover some of the most common things that people ask about because they are unsure. So if there is any particular subject you would like me to cover, please contact emma@ motorworld tenerife.com

A fair division of the coins is indeed possible. Let the number of rooms be N. This means that per room there are N chests with N coins each. In total there are N×N×N = N3 coins. One chest with N coins goes to the barber. For the six brothers, N3 - N coins remain. We can write this as: N(N2 - l), or N(N - 1)(N + l). This last expression is divisible by 6 in all cases, since a number is divisible by 6 when it is both divisible by 3 and even. This is indeed the case here: whatever N may be, the expression N(N - 1)(N + l) always contains three successive numbers. One of those is always divisible by 3, and at least one of the others is even. This even holds when N=1; in that case all the brothers get nothing, which is also a fair division!

Racing to disaster Racing Santander 1 CD Tenerife 0

By Roscoe TEN thousand people turned up at El Sardinero to watch the most predictable match of the season so far. You didn’t need to be Nostradamus to foretell what would happen.

A fast start from the home side, a soft goal, some dodgy decisions and a gung ho attack too late in the match from the visitors. Mama Sylla’s first-half penalty was enough to give Racing a vital three points, while Tenerife got what they deserved. Nothing! Something has changed with this team. We all know that Tenerife are rubbish on the road, so it’s not that. There was a real lift when Raul Agne took over at the start of February, and there seemed to be progress as the team went eight matches unbeaten. But that now seems a long time ago. To these eyes, the team are too good to go down - but with just five games to go, they still need a result or two. In fact, there is a whiff of the Newcastles and Hulls about Tenerife. The Geordies have gone nine without a win and sit just above the drop zone, while Hull have a horrific final couple of games. Sound familiar? Tenerife have managed seven without a win and face runaway leaders Real Betis and third-place Sporting Gijon in the last days of the season. How has it come to this? For me, there are three problems. Firstly, discipline. Suspensions have hurt Tenerife in the last few weeks. Key players keep missing matches, and most of the time it’s down to pure stupidity, which seems to be baked into the club’s culture. At times, it feels as

though players want to get booked as some crazy sort of badge of honour. If you are going to get carded, make sure it’s for something that counts. Let’s be honest, our players are not the brightest. Secondly, when Raul Agne took over, he promised flair and attacking football. That worked at first, but the players have gone back into their shell recently. With two wide players, we should scare defenders and force midfielders to drop off. But in the last few games, we have dropped off. Suso seems shackled, while Vitolo and Sanz appear outnumbered. Agne needs to give the players their freedom back. If he is asking them to sit back in the style of former boss Alvaro Cervera, then he must play that way correctly. That means a third central midfielder in either Ricardo or a fit-again Quique Rivero. And finally, Tenerife need to fit their confidence and composure in front of goal. Have you ever seen a team waste so many chances? Maxi Lopez is having a decent run, but he is no Ayoze. Diego Ifran, who picked up another in-

jury in training, looks shot. His early-season zest has vanished and at times, his body language suggests he would rather be somewhere else. A few weeks ago, President Miguel Conception was talking about a new contract for Agne, but that is off until survival is guaranteed. Even then, there has to be a question mark. Are the players playing for Agne right now? Remember the fallout he had at Cadiz a little while ago? And he openly admits he is not the easiest to work with. I’m not saying there has been a fallout, but something is going on. Yesterday (Thursday), a court ruled that the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) suspension and players’ strike was not legally binding and ruled the league must carry on as normal. So the final weeks of the season will be played as scheduled and Tenerife’s mustwin home match with Alcorcon goes ahead on Sunday, with a 7pm kick-off. This is the most important game of the season. I believe Tenerife need six points to be safe, and they must go

out all guns blazing to try to get half of those this weekend. Osasuna, Racing and Sabadell all have tough away matches, but Alcorcon are no pushovers. They will still feel they have a small chance of making the play-offs, and their record against Tenerife is excellent. The last home game saw over 10,000 turn up, and the club are trying Position

to replicate that with Venezuela squad. some great ticket pricThe tournament starts es. Sharpen those arrows!

By Geoff Huxtable IT soon comes around again, doesn’t it! Yes, the Oasis Fm darts league roars back in to action tonight (Friday), even though the hango-

vers from last season’s Presentation Night still linger in the memory. A slight reshuffle sees us return to a two-division set-up with 15 teams in each league, and we welcome a few new faces to our midst. Joining us this term will be Shandys Chippers, from Los Cristianos, Bar Leones,

playing out of Parque de la Reina, a second Waterfall outfit, and an aptly-named Gaffers Jucee Girls team. The mind boggles! Moving swiftly on, we trust that all teams, new and old, will enjoy the next 10 months of competition, with a host of banter and a few shandies thrown in.

Talking of competition, all the usual tournaments are still in place, including singles, doubles and trebles knockouts, plus the end-ofseason charity event, the memorial trophy, and the ever-popular John Lowe team handicap cup competition. We also welcome three young, eager mem-

bers on to the committee: Dave Mac, from the Phoenix, Pas O Nadas`Sheena and Chas, from Picassos. Rob continues, taking on the Treasurer’s role, and this old geezer gets to be chairman! After the difficulties of the last campaign, we sincerely hope that the new system and

committee will make your darting experience much better. We will do our best, be sure of that. Of course, we have to say a big Thank-You to Oasis Fm and Canarian Weekly for their continued sponsorship and support for this fine darts league. All that remains to say is: LET’S PLAY DARTS!

Nandu secure second spot IT has been a thrilling first season for Nandu Rugby Club, who have finished an excellent second in the league!

It was a great weekend of rugby and the boys rounded off their final trip to the mainland this season with two excellent wins. And Gregorio was leading scorer for the front row, adding another four tries to his impressive tally. Nandu 29 Quimic 12 AFTER four weeks without a competitive match, it took Nandu 20 minutes to find their rhythm and start dictating the game. Quimic started confidently and the first encounters went their way as their fly-half marshalled their backline. However, they failed to convert pressure into points and the ferocious Nandu defence held strong. And through the leadership of Gregorio

and his pack, Nandu turned possession into points and never looked back. Alessandro, who has been playing rugby for just three months, epitomised the effort with continuous tackling - and catching the majority of high balls that came his way.

Once in control, Nandu scored try after try, dominating the contact area, and Quimic buckled under sustained pressure. A pleasing aspect of the game was the scrum which Nandu dominated, even winning many against the head.

Another excellent show by Nandu, with tries from Gregorio, Reece, Facundo, Gabriel C and Mel. Nandu 31 Gotics 12 THE final game arrived and the boys, buoyant after the previous success, set to work to beat the opposition.

They knew victory would secure their runners-up place in the league, but Gotics were never going to be a walkover. They are renowned for having a powerful pack, which provide quick ball to the opposition. But Nandu’s forwards fronted

up and more than matched their opposite numbers. They were physical at the breakdown and were clearly winning the battles. Intelligent defence, with units working together, prevented Gotics crossing the line and making any linebreak gains. Reece, in his final game for the team, led from the front, carrying ball after ball and pushing Nandu over the advantage line and on to the front foot. With the support of Fran and Facundo, the boys provided quick ball, enabling the backs to take advantage. One of the highlights was Chema’s chip and chase, which carved open the defence and put pressure on the opposition full-back. Fantastic vision and kick execution saw him chase his own ball, collect and score under the posts. Tries: Chema, Gegorio, Reece and Facundo.

All-change as Inter take over ANOTHER game has come and gone, and there are just two weekends left before the end of the Premier League.

The title and two relegation places have been decided, but it is still all to play for in the Oasis Fm Fantasy League as it was all-change at the top again. Man City were the big contributors to the

point-scoring team of the week, after their dismantling of a woeful QPR side. Three of their players made the grade, while the rest of the team was a real mix, with players from Swansea, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Leicester, Man Utd, Stoke, Liverpool and Sunderland. At the summit, Nick Abbott’s Boomtown Rabz were knocked off top spot by Ray Malone, whose Inter Malone lead the way with 1,997 points - just 12 ahead of

Nick, on 1,985. Frank Devaney’s Toffee’s are still in third on 1,984 points, together with Jamie Palmer’s Spartans, who have also amassed the same tally. So it really is game-on now! Ray took top spot after being team of the week with a great total of 98 points. This was largely down to having Sergio Aguero as his captain, who, with his hat-trick and double haul, scored a big 46 points. He also had Da-

vid Silva and John Terry scoring well for him. So with just a couple of games left, thoughts can almost turn to next season. Will Harry Kane be able to reproduce the form he has shown this season? What gambles will be taken in the transfer market? It is a difficult job being a Fantasy League manager, trying to predict players’ form and who will score goals, and making transfer decisions.

Agreed, it’s not quite as stressful as being an actual manager, but all

good fun none the less. So bring on next season.

Gaffers pot the title

THE Direct Telecom Pool League have new champions as Gaffers A wrapped up the title on Tuesday to join the distinguished role of honour.

With Tenerife Hammers A playing their final game, Gaffers knew that with two games in hand, all they needed was a draw and the title was theirs. They travelled to Los Abrigos to take on Phoenix Potters, a team more than capable of pulling off an upset. But with the title in their sights, Gaffers were always favourites. The Potters, looking for a top-five finish, gave it their best shot. But the visitors were just too strong and the result was never in doubt. Gaffers took the win and the title … and the celebrations started. Hammers A faced Treehouse A in their final game, knowing they needed a massive upset for them to have any hope of retaining their title. It never came, but they didn’t let their heads drop, though, and got

on with the job of collecting three points. Treehouse have faded in the last few weeks and it was another bad night at the table for them. Hammers, who took the win and finished the season strongly, will look to regroup over the summer break and come back next season stronger than ever to try to prise the title back. The Phoenix, battling it out with Inn the Pink A for third spot, took advantage of their rivals not playing to move above them. They had a tough game against The Peacocks, who are fighting a relegation battle, but The Phoenix took control early and, once they got their noses in front, they never looked back. Peacocks put up a fight but it wasn’t to be, and they now face two must-win games to stay up. Just a few weeks ago, Palms A were involved in the battle for a topfive finish. But their form has dipped in recent weeks and this week was no exception. It’s as though they are already on their summer holidays Dreamers A were this week’s opposition and

they started the night a point behind their rivals. But they were determined to ensure they finished the night above them. Matches between these two sides are always close, but Dreamers did a better job this time of finishing off their frames - 3-1 became 5-1 before the Palms A fightback. At 5-4 it was game-on only for Mark and then Tommy to finish the job

for the hosts. Terrace B are another team who have gone backwards in the second half of the season. They are fortunate to have picked up enough points in the first half to avoid a relegation battle. A trip to Silencio and a game against Exiles B gave them the opportunity to get back to winning ways, but it wasn’t to be. Exiles are another of those teams who know how to use home advantage, as they did again this time. With a couple of the Terrace players being off-form, Exiles made the most of it and enjoyed another three points to move above Terrace B. In Division Two, Sporting Jester A were crowned champions last week without even picking up a cue. And this week sees Bluebell A confirmed as runnersup, again without even playing. Waterfall Jokers still had an outside chance of finishing top, and a more than good chance

of taking second spot. But last week’s draw, and defeat this week, left them four points behind Bluebell with just one game to play. They were beaten by The Crown, who will be a team to watch next season. They came into the league late on to replace another team and, after a shaky start, they have started picking up wins, mostly notably against the champions. And this week they were too good for the Jokers, forging out another great result. Gaffers B had a good go at gaining promotion this season, only to run out of steam in recent weeks. On Tuesday they took on Picasso’s A and, on paper, were the better side. But this league is always capable of throwing up surprises and Picasso’s were in good form. Maybe Gaffers B have one eye on their forthcoming Plate final, but credit where credit is due. Picasso’s were simply too good for them. James Place could still finish in the top

four after a slow start to the season after enjoying another win, this time against Treehouse B. It has been a difficult season for Treehouse and they look like taking the wooden spoon. True, they put up a fight but it just wasn’t enough. The visitors were too strong and never looked troubled on their way to victory. The final games involved both teams from Sporting Jester. The A team, already champions and promoted, had a tie against Dreamers B. It was a relatively straightforward game for them and they were too good for the visitors. Sporting Jester B haven’t fared as well as their bar mates, and they failed to carve out a win against Next Door. Craig and his team can play good pool and, on occasions have been unfortunate this season. But they were solid against the Jesters and, with three points added to their tally, they could still finish in the top half of the table.

HUll of a big match

Southampton v Aston Villa Saints have been going backwards for some weeks, suffering another loss last weekend. They were looking good for a top-seven finish and, Europa League football perhaps, but Swansea are now just a point behind them. They need a win and will go for it in their last home game. Villa are still in with the possibility of relegation, but they are in a better position than their rivals. Three three points here and they will be safe. They will be confident after seeing Leicester beat Southampton and, with Benteke back in great form, they have a proven goalscorer. Prediction: Home win

Burnley v Stoke Burnley have nothing left to play for after being relegated last week, despite winning. However, they are an honest team and I am sure they will want to put on a good show for their fans. They will be playing with no pressure so I believe they are in with a real chance of picking up another win because they don’t want to finish bottom. Stoke were pushing for an even higher finish, but Swansea’s defeat of Arsenal means they can go no higher, unless the Swans concede a glut of goals in their final games. It has been a good season for Stoke, though, and Mark Hughes should be applauded for getting them to play attractive football. Prediction: Home win

West Ham v Everton Hammers need a win if they are to finish in the top half of the table. It has been a very disappointing second half of the season after they started so well, and it is looking more and more likely that there will be a new manager in place next season. Everton are the team chasing them in the league and a win will move them above their rivals. For a while, it looked as though Everton would be involved in the relegation battle. But they have rolled up their sleeves up in recent weeks and picked up the points needed to avoid getting dragged backwards. Prediction: Away win

Sunderland v Leicester Sunderland are in a better position than their relegation rivals as they have a game in hand - against Arsenal! But when you are fighting for your league status, anything is possible. A win here is a must because their final game is at Chelsea. They they showed a fighting spirit against Everton and will need to play at the same level. Leicester are on an unbelievable run of form and will be very confident they can continue it. They looked as if they were down and out a couple of months back, but they have dragged themselves out of the relegation places and given themselves a real chance of survival. A win will make them pretty much safe, and what an achievement that will be. Prediction: Draw

QPR v Newcastle The home side are down and out and heading for the Championship. For me, they have got exactly what they deserved because, their squad was full of players at the end of their careers, picking up one last big pay-check and not really caring about the team. One or two players aside, the whole squad has been poor and shown no stomach for the fight. Newcastle are teetering on the edge of a cliff but will be confident they can secure a victory which will nudge them closer to safety. A massive summer overhaul is needed, but it remains to be seen whether Mike Ashley will provide the cash needed. Prediction: Away win

WITH just a couple of games left to play, we already have two teams relegated. But the fight to avoid the final relegation place is well and truly on. There are five teams in danger, potentially, so results are extremely important this weekend.

Liverpool v Crystal Palace I am steering away from the sentimentality of Steven Gerrard’s last game at Anfield because we all move on at some point. After last weekend’s draw against Chelsea, fourth place is now out of the question, so Liverpool don’t really have anything left to play for. But they will be keen to beat Palace, who have become somewhat of a bogey team, costing the Reds the league last season. Palace will again want to be party-poopers, and after decent recent showings against Chelsea and Man Utd, they will feel they have the players capable of winning. Prediction: Home win

Swansea v Man City The Swans having been getting stick this week for the way they played against Arsenal, but they got the points and that is all that matters in the league. They looked like finishing eighth, but that surprise win has seen them move to within a point of Southampton. If they can overhaul them, it will be a fantastic season for Garry Monk in his first managerial job. Man City are fighting with Arsenal for second spot and I’m sure they will thank Swansea for helping out. But they need to win their final games, and I’m sure they won’t be charitable on the pitch. In-form Aguero, who will be hunting more goals, offers more of a threat than Giroud, so Swansea’s defenders will have to be on their toes. Prediction: Away win

Man Utd v Arsenal This is one of those footballing conundrums for United fans: beat Arsenal and they can move above them into third spot. But that will most likely see Man City finish runners-up! They returned to winning ways last week but were far from convincing, and this will be a difficult game for them. But with a top-four finish guaranteed, the pressure is off a little. Arsenal have gone back to their tactics of walking the ball into the net as they constantly dithered in front of goal against Swansea, rather than someone having a shot. In the end, it cost them dearly. They need to show a huge improvement if they hope to catch City, but this game is always played at a high tempo, and that will suit the Gunners. Prediction: Draw

West Brom v Chelsea West Brom are now safe but they will not want to be overtaken by big rivals Aston Villa. They know Chelsea are already champions and will hope they take their foot off the gas. Saido Berahino has a big chance to shine and put himself in the shop window, ready for the transfer market opening as he dreams of a bigger club. Chelsea looked lethargic in the draw against Liverpool, but they have had a long season and, with the title already secure, you could not blame them for playing at a slower pace. Some players are already in holiday mode and it showed on the pitch, so West Brom have a real chance. Prediction: Home win

Tottenham v Hull I’m not entirely sure what is going on at Spurs. In recent weeks they have become stagnant and, if anything, have moved backwards. It’s no coincidence that the goals have dried up for Harry Kane, and that is a real worry because Spurs have no other strikers in form. They need to invest in the summer and bring in players who can complement Kane and lighten his burden a little. Hull know they must win - and hope results elsewhere go their way. It is a good time to be playing under-par Spurs, and that should give hope to Hull. They need two massive performances in their final two games ... otherwise it’s Championship football for them! Prediction: Draw
