PSOE claims a stunning win as Rajoy’s PP is swept aside Contiuned from Front. Adeje and Arona will both have PSOE Mayors, and the public will be hoping for unity between the councils. In Adeje, the popular Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga again retained his position as Mayor and actually saw the PSOE increase its share of the vote. The 6% jump sees the number of PSOE councillors grow from 13 to 15. The Coalicion Canarias’ (CC) vote slumped, giving the party four seats only (down from six), while the PP had a nightmare. It has just one seat after polling fewer than 600 votes. A triumphant Fraga said: “We will respect the confidence shown in us with honesty and generosity. We now have 15 out of 21 Councillors in the Town Hall, two more than in 2011. We are 15 - a force and a strength. “I want to say to all of those who have placed their confidence in our programme, our project, that we won’t let them down. Over the next four years, we will work hard to achieve all that we have promised.” He added: “We will work with transparency, commitment, hope and ideas, and continue the path Adeje has been following in promoting quality in tourism, culture and harmonious co-existence. Adeje has spoken loudly and clearly. We won’t let them down.” There was a similar message from Jose Mena as he became new Arona Mayor. He led the PSOE to 35% of the vote and 12 seats, which was up from five in 2011. But he came up agonisingly short of a majority, needing another 302 votes for a 13th councillor and absolute power. He spent most of this week trying to form a workable pact with the CC. Its candidate for Mayor, Miguel Angel Mendez, had a shocker as his party slumped to just five seats. But Mena ran a campaign against the corruption from previous CC regimes in Arona, so it was always going to be hard for him to agree a

pact with the “enemy”. A deal with PP is unlikely, so while PSOE has the keys to Arona, there will be lots of horse-trading to get change implemented. But that should not diminish Mena’s achievement. His was a stunning win in what was an amazing night for PSOE. As things stand, and there are still a few pacts to be finalised before the 14th June cut-off, and in the south of Tenerife, only Arafo, San Miguel and Santiago del Teide will have Mayors who are not from the PSOE. Even San Miguel could go red because Victor Chinea could do a deal with the CCN party. This would see its three seats added to his six and push him past the CC. There was better news for Coalicion Canarias elsewhere as Jose Manuel Bermudez retained Santa Cruz. He polled just shy of 25% to get CC nine seats and remain as Mayor. Carlos Alonso won his first election as head of Tenerife Cabildo, but it was not exactly a landslide. Coalicion Canarias will have 10 representatives; PSOE seven; PP six; Podemos five and Ciudadanos (C’s) just one. The last two named parties will make it interesting in the Cabildo because they have totally different views from the three mainstream interests. Like the local mayoral situation, there will need to be deals done to ensure voting intentions, and Carlos Alonso said: “I will not negotiate on behalf of Coalicion Ca-

narias. I want to negotiate on behalf of Tenerife.” As for the Canarian Government, the CC held on to power, but by a whisker only. Coalicion Canarias won 17 seats with the PSOE one behind. The PP have 12 and Podemos 7. Fernando Clavijo is the new President, but he paid at the ballot box for the unpopular reign of the outgoing Paulino Rivero. A pact agreement between CC and PSOE seems likely. Both parties have been in talks this week and there are more planned for Monday. Voting in the Canaries has been mirrored nationally, where the Popular Party have been battered from pillar to post. Prime Minister Rajoy says his party will learn the lessons from the local elections, but he will have to get his skates on because the General Election is under six months away. However, he will be comforted by the polls, which suggest that the public might vote differently when it comes to national affairs. His PP still has a slight lead in the latest sample, and there were more encouraging financial figures this week. It seems that this is where November will be won and lost. The surge in vote for Podemos and Ciudadanos was impressive, but the vote was nowhere near enough for either party to hold serious leadership aspirations. Yet again, PSOE has had a solid local election. But can the party build on this?

Siam Mall an instant winner THOUSANDS of people have flocked to Siam Mall daily since the swish new commercial centre, next to Siam Park in Costa Adeje, finally opened last week.

Visitor Kerry goes straight to the top JOHN Kerry, the US Secretary of State, will make his first official visit to Spain in the next few days, meeting with King Felipe and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

He arrives in Madrid on Sunday and will “discuss a range of global and bilateral issues”, said State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke. Kerry, a former former Presidential candidate, will also get together with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo. The trip coincides with talks on modifications

to the bilateral defence agreement. It is understood that this will lead to the Spanish town of Moron del Frontera becoming a permanent base for a US military unit, focused on operations in Africa. Perry is also expected to discuss with Spanish officials the ongoing negotiations for an American-European Union trade accord, the fight against jihadists, Libya, and the current situation in Latin America - in particular, Washington’s relations with Cuba. This will be Kerry’s first visit to Spain since he succeeded Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State in February 2013.

The mall, spread over 30,500 square metres on two floors, has 77 commercial premises as well as 1,100 free parking spaces. The first few days frustrated some motorists as all

the spaces were taken up, leading to angry scenes. Police were needed to control the traffic on the first weekend, and every spare piece of land was used as a makeshift parking spot. Siam Mall is open every day from 9am. It is already employing about 600 people, and this number is set to rise. It is designed to embrace the climate here in the South, and uses the sun as a feature. There are large open

spaces, pergolas, gardens and fountains, creating a pleasant environment in which light and fresh air are the main characteristics. One of the additions to its attractive design and location is a free bus service, covering the main tourist areas of Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje. There are 17 restaurants with different specialities and large open terraces. And among the family e n -

tertainment highlights are two playgrounds on the top floor, and a playroom. The mall also features the biggest Hiperdino in the South, which has already pleased locals. The Dino invested three million euros in the establishment, occupying 2,150sq.m, and has nearly 100 staff. At the opening, Rosa Delia Gonzalez said on behalf of the site owners: “Siam Mall will be a meeting point in the South. We have created an area that we want to make a ‘must see’ for tourists and residents. “This is a family mall, intended for the family to enjoy their leisure time and shopping at the same time.”

Canarian Partial strike by trade boom

EUROPE was the main destination for Canaries’ exports in the first quarter of 2015, with goods worth 108 million euros leaving the Island. It represented a 36.1% increase compared with the same 2014 period, according to the Bulletin of Foreign Trade, prepared by the Santa Cruz Business Expansion Commerce Chamber. Interestingly, the UK market is booming. A grand total of over 41m euros was brought in from Britain - a massive 84.3% increase

against figures from a year ago. The Netherlands received cargoes totalling to 33m euros (+30.7%), followed by Italy with operations at 11.5m (+107.3%) and Germany with 9.2m (+22.9%). After the EU, Africa stands next with a 32.6m-euro turnover. Canarian products also reached Asia, with sales of 16.3m (+42.3%), followed by America with 14.7m (+42.7%) and Oceania with 243,420 euros (+76.7%). And as a nation, Spanish exports grew 4.4% in the same period.

air-traffic staff

THE Air Traffic Controllers Union (USCA) will stage partial strikes next month, on the 8th, 10th, 12th and 14th of June.

This strike - two hours in the morning and two in the evening - is the union’s first in 26 years, was supported by more than 81% of votes from its members. And though it won’t be a total staff walk-out on these June dates, it will obviously lead to flight chaos.

The move was initially pencilled in for March, but it was put on ice following the Germanwings disaster

The last traffic controllers’ strike, in 1989, had little success because the government at the time called in the mili-

tary to cover the action. This protest is in response to a decision by ENAIRE and airport controllers AENA to sanction 61 air traffic controllers at Barcelona’s Control Centre. It was taken after an incident which led to the closure of airspace in 2010. Those disciplined were fired and, despite pleas for their reinstatement, nothing has happened. This, has left the union “no other choice”, said a USCA spokesman during a Madrid press conference.

Tourists’ boost TENERIFE Cabildo and the Island’s four tourist municipalities - Arona, Adeje, Puerto de la Cruz and Santiago del Teide - will invest a total of 10 million euros to improve public tourist space.

It is part of the new Tourism Strategy, announced recently.

And the planned investment could be boosted with more financial contributions from the Canarian Government’s Open Commercial Areas programme, and even private initiatives. In Puerto de la Cruz, the planned investment will be 1.9 euros, to be allocated to improving the streets in Quintana, Nieves and Ravelo. The sum exceeds 3.9m in Adeje, to finance actions such as improving access to Costa Adeje from the Fañabe area

(down to La Caleta) and the rehabilitation of the waterfront between Puerto Colón and Fañabe Beach. Meanwhile, the Cabildo’s Cultural and Historical Heritage department has given the green light to a new digital publishing project, aimed at publishing books and cultural magazines. The CHH is hoping to promote the publication of books in a format compatible with reading devices, such

‘Canaries are much safer’ RICARDO Arranz, head of the Guardia Civil in Las Palmas, ruffled a few feathers on the mainland on Wednesday during a ceremony.

“The Canaries is much safer than the mainland,” he said at an event to mark the 171st anniversary of the Canarian creation of the Guardia Civil, which came to the archipelago in 1898, some 56 years

after its creation. “In the archipelago, there is less crime and the highest conviction rate in Spain.” And statistics seem to back up his claim. His figures include the fact that tourists sometimes make false claims in order to benefit from their insurance. Arranz added: “It’s a black figure that exists and is counted in the statistics, so in real terms we are doing even better. “The rate of solving crimes is between 10 and 15 points higher

than the national average.” With regard to drugtrafficking, he has indicated that most of the drugs which move in the Canary Islands “are just passing through”, as happens with boats which have caches that are imprisoned at high sea. Many of them aren’t even heading to the islands although, once intercepted, they are taken to the archipelago because it is the nearest port. “But there is no reason to be alarmed,” insisted Arranz.

as e-books, and its distribution, the conversion of books already published on paper to a format compatible with electronic reading devices and their distribution, as well as cultural magazines in electronic format. Finally, Turismo de Tenerife has launched a campaign to promote the Island throughout Spain, aimed at attracting domestic passengers during the summer season. Among the actions over the next two weeks will be adverts played nationwide in film theatres, prior to the screening of Mad Max, The Avengers and Jurassic World.

Canary trade figures fall THE Canary Islands’ trade industry dropped 20.8% in March, but there was more welcome news on the mainland.

Nationally, it improved by 5.8% last March against the same 2014 month - its best figures since April 2013. according to the National Statistics Institute (INE) data.

Spain has now enjoyed successive months of growth following the 1% sales increase in February. The energy industry was the only sector to reduce its sales in March, with an annual decline of 17.1%. Capital goods increased turnover by 11.3%, the enduring consumer by 8.8%, the non-enduring consumption by 7.9% and intermediate goods by 7.4%.

New port a year off

CONSTRUCTION of the new Granadilla port continues to drag. Earlier this year, the breakwater was completed, and according to official data, 40% of the work is now completed. It means that of the 2,512 metres needed, 1,000 metres have been constructed. The bank pier is behind schedule, but work began on that section this week. The only part of the port yet to see any building is the back esplanade. The current forecast is that the port will be completed by mid-2016. Work started on 30th July 2010 after a year’s delay, and the controversial project had been rubber-stamped on 27th February 2007. The venture was awarded to FCC Constructions, Sato and Punta Larga Promotora, with a 115-million-euro budget.

SPANISH olive groves are being threatened seriously by deadly bacteria, which originated in the US and is currently blighting Italian olive groves.

It has been Christened “Olive Ebola” by Blanca Landa, researcher from the Institute of Sustainable Agriculture. It is is part of the CSIC - one of Spain’s foremost scientific organisations – and the disease is currently a major threat to Spanish olive groves across the south of the country, which could be decimated. The Xylella fastidiosa bacteria was detected in southern Italy in 2013. It has since been responsible for the olive’s quick decline syndrome (OQDS), a disease which has caused a rapid drop in olive plantations. The bacteria had never been detected in Europe before being confirmed in southern Italy, where it is currently ravaging olive groves in the Apulia region.

‘Ebola’ threat to Olives

Spain is the biggest olive-oil producer in the European Union and officials are, naturally, worried about the potential threat to the country’s mammoth olive industry. Landa told Spanish daily ABC: “The Ital-

ian outbreak is very virulent - the bacteria’s virulence in olive trees is unprecedented.” She added: “It is unforgiving. The Italian farmers we met told us they had taken better care of their olive groves than their children and now they are damaged irrevocably. In just a year, it can wipe out an entire plantation.” What makes the bacteria even more threatening is the lack of a cure for it, which means affected olive trees have to be felled. Ester Herranz, a Popular Party MEP, has complained that the European Union has done little to confront the disease since it was first detected. It is true that the EU action has been slow to take off. Only last week, the European Parliament failed to pass a resolution calling for the EU to take the bacteria threat more seriously by determining it were necessary to stop agricultural imports from

high-risk zones. Landa has criticised the lack of EU funding for research into the disease which could already be in Spain. “Xylella could already be in Spain and gone unnoticed,” she told ABC. “One of the species it affects is oleanders, and Andalusia is full of them, often very close to thousands of acres of olive groves.” The fear is that if the bacteria does make it to Spain, there will be little anyone can do to halt it, and Landa warned: “It will be unstoppable. “We need to put in place a system of massscreening for the bacteria, to avoid having to tear up thousands of olive trees,” she said. Back in March, EU member states failed to reach an agreement on how to stop the spread of the disease. Spain wanted a hard line, fearing for its own olive groves as well as vines and citrus trees, EU officials told AFP. But Italy was less willing to take drastic measures as growers mounted increasing resistance to the destruction of age-old olive groves.

Happy Dia de Canarias IT has been quite a week in the south of Tenerife. I was delighted with the local election results and, more importantly, how many Brits were genuinely interested.

I’m sure Mayor Mena will get to grips with Arona and the multitude of problems which have been left on his desk. He has made some strong promises, and I know the team around him are ready to get to work. I wish him well. The opening of Siam Mall was astonishing. I think it’s fair to say it took everyone by surprise, and the public response was unbelievable. Those 1,100 car parking spaces were like gold dust. There were a few teething problems, and I’ve heard a few negative reports about a couple of the eating outlets. But give it a chance. Running out of stock on your first weekend is not a crime, and I’m sure they will learn from it.

The Mall looks amazing, and, with other exciting centres being developed or built, the South will be transformed over the next few years. And about time, too. Have you ever driven from Las Palmas to the south of Gran Canaria? There are shopping centres for miles and miles. Tenerife has more than enough space, so let’s get the economy going and get shopping! Tomorrow (Saturday) is Canary Day and it’s something to celebrate. I love living here and I love these islands. I’m sure we could all integrate with our Canarian cousins a little better, but by embracing their culture we become better people. It’s a great place to live on so many levels. It’s not perfect, but where is? Canary Day for me shows how far our little islands have come in such a short period. Can you imagine the changes the old timers have seen here? I’m sure you can find a little time tomorrow to raise a glass and say thanks for the wonderful place we live in.

Dear Editor, When I was invited to Tenerife by my sister and her husband, I did not know what to expect, but the Island has been a revelation. I am stopping on the outskirts of Callae Salvaje - so quiet, the only sounds are the singing of small birds and the rustle of the palms. I have been up to Vilaflor and seen the beautiful altars there. Then to Masca ... what a ride! What views! Next, Los Gigantes. Wow! With all these sights underneath the towering presence of Mount Teide, one, cannot help but be uplifted. Next, the people, and don’t they know how to celebrate! Los Cristianos - girls dancing in the street, following the loudest drummers I have ever heard. On Good Friday I was taken to Adeje to witness the Great Easter Celebration. Could one ask for more? The food comprised dishes to die for and wine fit for a king, served in wonderful settings by gracious waiters and waitresses. I will be sorry to leave this wonderful place, but I will always have such great memories. Thank you all. Denis JJ Broomham, Nottingham

After a six-month delay, an agreement has finally been reached between the Canarian Government and Tenerife Cabildo, which has been submitted to the Ministry of Environment. All that remains before the new management can be sent up is for a final Budget report to be agreed, and the signing-off from the Legal de-

partments. “Once you have both documents, the decree will be approved by the Governing Council,” said Pedro Cuesta, head of the Nature Protection regional executive. He insisted this week that all parties had been working hard to make the project go forward, and there will now be just one overseeing board.

Phone hacking puts nosey wife in prison A COURT in Spain has jailed a woman for checking the contents of her husband’s mobile phone illegally.

The woman, named only as Mary Magdalene NG, was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 1,080 euros by the Jaen court for revealing secrets she had taken from her husband’s mobile phone. These included reading an intimate conversation he’d had with his neighbour.

The woman was found guilty of accessing her husband’s mobile device without his consent. She read and copied messages showing a clandestine relationship between her hubby and their neighbour. Mary Magdalene used this information to confront her husband, whom she was already in the process of a legal separation. The husband then informed his neighbour of the phone hacking, and she complained to police. This led to the arrest, charging and subsequent conviction.

Suitcase boy is allowed to stay THE eight-yearold boy, caught being smuggled across the border into Spain inside a suitcase, has been granted a temporary residency permit.

A government spokesperson said that Immigration authorities have given the child a one-year authorisation because of his exceptional, personal circumstances. The father of Adou, from the Ivory Coast, said he paid a mafia around 5,000 euros to get the child across the border The authorisation notice has been sent to a centre in Ceuta city, where the child has been held since 7th May. That was when astonished border agents at the Tarajal crossing spotted him, curled up

in the piece of luggage as it passed through a security scanner. The permit will allow Adou to leave the centre and be reunited with his mother, Lucie Ouattara, though not before DNA tests confirm their relationship. She has lived in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura, since 2006. The boy’s father, Ali Outara, who also lives in Fuerteventura, allegedly paid a human trafficking ring to help bring the boy into Spain. He could not legally apply for family reunification because of a shortfall in his 41-euro monthly income. Mr Outtara, detained at the border crossing when he showed up to pick up his son from the mafia, said he paid around 5,000 euros to get the child across. But he was unaware that he would be hidden inside a suitcase.

Pressmen are axed as newspapers fold THE financial crisis has had a profound affected on the newspaper industry. A report by the Press Association shows the progressive decrease in the number of press workers across Spain.

Economic difficulties, along with a change in business practices, have rocked the sector. Some titles have closed and others have undertaken cutbacks, resulting in many professionals losing their jobs.

In the Canary Islands, according to data given by the Canarian Institute of Statistics (Istac), there are 683 fewer pressmen in the journalism world compared with six years ago. On 31st March 2009, there were 1,909 people listed in the Social Security as employed in this field. But on the last day of the same month this year, that number had fallen to 1,226. The reliance on free information on the internet, plus the high cost of paper and printing, caused serious difficulties for news organisations.

UK outsiders face ban from referendum vote DAVID Cameron’s Conservative Government has pledged an “in/out” referendum on the EU by the end of 2017.

But citizens from most EU countries living in the UK will not be eligible to vote. It means that the referendum on Europe will just about be the same as for a general election, rather than local or European elections. Irish citizens in the UK are eligible, and residents from two other EU nations, Malta and Cyprus, also qualify, along with others from the Commonwealth. Cameron will hold talks with the European Commission President JeanClaude Juncker at Chequers later on. Legislation for the voting eligibility of the referendum - which the Conservatives have promised to hold before the end of 2017 - will be introduced to Parliament via the EU Referendum Bill on The Bill will make clear that the franchise follows, broadly, the same rules as the general election: British, Irish and Commonwealth over-18 citizens resident in the UK will be eligible to vote, as will UK nationals who have lived overseas for less than 15 years. The franchise will not include 16 and 17-yearolds, unlike the Scottish independence referen-

dum. Members of the House of Lords and Commonwealth citizens in Gibraltar will also be allowed to vote, although they cannot participate in general elections. In total, around 45.3 million people will be able to take part. A Number 10 source said: “No Brit under the age of 58 has had his or her say on the UK’s membership of the European Union. “It is time to put this right and give people the choice - in or out. “This is a big decision for our country, and one that is about the future of the United Kingdom. That’s why we think it important that it is British, Irish and Commonwealth citizens who get to decide.” Eurosceptics have previously claimed that as many as 1.5 million people from other EU countries could have been allowed to vote in the referendum, had it taken place under the rules for local government elections, which allow citizens of other member states to vote in them. Less than a year ago, the Prime Minister was doing his best to make sure Jean Claude Juncker didn’t get to be European Commission President. Now, though, he has extended an invitation to the EC President to have tea with him at his Chequers’ country retreat, where, it is understood, Cameron’s approach will be “open, practical and friendly”. Former Tory Defence Secretary Liam Fox, a Eurosceptic, said allowing EU

citizens to vote in the referendum “would have been an unacceptable dilution of the voice of the British people”. On learning that Commonwealth citizens in Gibraltar would be allowed to vote, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said Mr Cameron had “been true to his word”, adding: “Our voice will be heard as part of the franchise for this seminal exercise in democracy.” In 2014, the Conservatives promised to remove the 15-year cap on expats voting in general elections if they were returned to power. Party chairman Grant Shapps said then: “Being a British citizen is for life. We believe it should also give you the lifelong right to vote.” But Tory backbencher John Redwood told the Today programme it would be “wrong to hijack” the referendum to extend the vote to groups not previously included in the franchise. And he said it was “a myth put around by the pro-Europeans” that 16 a n d

17-year-olds were interested in the issue of Europe. This week, Mr Cameron has embarked on a tour of personal meetings with other EU leaders to talk about the UK’s agenda for reform. He has been meeting the leaders of Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Poland and Germany. The Prime Minister was also hoping to talk to all other 27 leaders of EU member states individually before the European Council at the end of June. Douglas Carswell, the sole UKIP MP, said the PM’s promised renegotiation would be “more or less worthless”. “There are people in Brussels who would give an arm and a leg to try to keep us in,” said Carswell. “He could use that as leverage to get a fundamentally different relationship with Europe. “But, of course, we now know he’s not seeking treaty change, and none of the new deal he is looking for will apply specifically to Britain. “None of it is going to fundamentally change our relationship with Europe.”

Spain slip down the THE latest review of how lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people experience human rights across the continent puts the UK in pole position, with Spain sixth.

While Spain remained in the top 10 of the annual Rainbow Europe rankings of rights for LGBTI people, conducted by campaign group ILGA-Europe, the country fell from third place last year as oth-

er countries made greater strides in gay rights. Spain was surpassed by Malta,

S w e d e n and Croatia in the equality ratings for LGBTI people. The re-

port rated countries based on several categories related to LGBTI rights,

including equality in marriage, adoption rights and protections against discrimination. Rainbow Europe rated Spain’s level of equality to be 69%, down from 2014’s 73%. But ILGA-Europe stressed that the difference in rankings did not mean the situation in Spain had changed drastically for the worse. Spokesperson Juris Lavrikovs said his group took into consideration different factors this year, such as more intersex rights. “It’s not a reflection that the situation is getting worse,” he added. “Overall, being at sixth place is still a very respectful position.” The report pointed to major improvements taken in Malta as to why that country leapt forward in the ratings, jumping from 11th last year to third place. Malta last year granted constitutional protection against discrimination based on gender identification. The country also became the first in the world to enact legal provisions protecting the human rights of intersex people - people born with anatomies which do not fit typical male or female definitions. Lavrikovs said there was no national law protecting intersex people against hate crimes in Spain, and the country does not protect against medical correction on intersex-born babies. The UK retained the

top spot with an equality rating of 86%, again followed by Belgium. Spain was rated the most gay-friendly country in the world in 2013 and least homophobic country last year, according to Pew Research Centre. It was also an early supporter of gay rights’ legislation, such as same-sex marriage and adoption, both of which have been legal in the country for a decade. Andalusia became the second European region last July to allow transgender people to establish their correct gender without medical diagnosis or legal authorisation. Lavrikovs said this set an important example for the rest of the country, and for the continent. “It sends the message that it’s possible, it’s doable and this is how it should be done.” Still, the report pointed to various areas where it could improve, including how high-profile individuals discuss LGBTI people, such as when a cardinal reportedly called homosexuality a “defect”. The report stated: “Reports of homophobic and transphobic discourse by political and religious authorities is another unfortunate, recurring feature of our Annual Review, from Armenia, Belarus and Moldova, to Spain and Cyprus. “That said, 2014 did witness something of an evolution, as individuals and groups willing to challenge these hierarchical

e Rainbow views emerged.” The ILGA-Europe report also highlighted recent police reports, which had shown that LGBT individuals were the largest targets for hate crimes. On the other hand, the report praised Catalonia’s new law that punishes homophobic and transphobic hate crimes more harshly, with fines of up to 14,000 euros, and the burden of proof placed on the alleged attacker. Spain also made some important legal decisions for LGBTI people in the past year, according to the report. The government committed to allowing same-sex Spanish couples who have a surrogate child abroad to register as the child’s parents. A Spanish court also granted parental rights

to the non-biological mother of a child, who had not been married to the biological mother, after the couple broke up. NGOs had argued that heterosexual couples are granted parental rights without being married. The report also pointed out an agreement made last year between Spain and Russia, which stated that Russian orphans could not be placed with single or same-sex couples. The country also seemed to have some improvement to make for medical rights of LGBTI people. NGOs complained when the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality said it would not reimburse people for a hormonal treatment drug essential for transgender

men going through gender transition. While one insurance company launched a service for HIV-positive people, regardless of their sexual orientation, other companies made it more difficult for people to receive sufficient coverage. Despite a 2013 decision by the federal government that women receiving fertility treatment could be reimbursed only if they had medical reasons, regional governments in Andalusia, Asturias, the Basque Country, the Canaries, Catalonia and Extremadura all decided to reimburse single and lesbian women out of their health budgets. The countries rated lowest on the index were Armenia on 9%, Russia 8% and Azerbaijan at 5% equality.

Name’s the same for many Spanish babes LUCIA and Hugo are now the most popular names for babies born in Spain, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE), which reviewed 425,390 birth records for 2013.

Daniel has been pushed aside by Hugo, after the latter topped the boys’ name charts in 2012 and 2010, while mums warmed to Alejandro in 2011. As for girls, the situation is much the same, with Lucía leading the way for the third consecutive year, followed by María, Paula, Daniela, Martina, Carla, Sara, Sofía, Valeria and Julia. And curiously, some 43% of the Spanish population has one of just nine surnames After Hugo, the most popular boy names in 2013 were Daniel, Pablo, Alejandro, Álvaro,

Adrián, David, Mario, Diego and Javier. But throughout the Spanish population as a whole, regardless of age, the classic names still rule. Statistics from 2014 show that the top five men’s names are Antonio, José, Manuel, Francisco and Juan, and 12% of the entire male population has one of these names.

On this ranking, Hugo is 70th, behind Mohammed, while for the women, María Carmen is followed by María, Carmen, Josefa and Isabel. Lucía ranks 20th. And 43% of the Spanish population (20.4 million), have the surname González, Rodríguez, Fernández, López, Martínez, Sánchez, Pérez, Gómez or Martín.

Santa Cruz gets lighting-up time SANTA Cruz plans to light up the Playa de Las Teresitas in 2016, thanks to re-elected Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, who wants the area to be upgraded and properly lit at night.

There have been tentative plans to spruce up Las Teresitas over the last four years, but nothing has been set in stone. Bermudez, keen to move the project forward, said: “The local authority is working on this project, and we cannot pass another couple of years without light in this area.” Illuminating the

walkways and the beach area is part of the improvement project, which also includes infrastructure work and modernising the sanitation system. The project, it is believed, will cost around two million euros, and Bermúdez wants to install the low-energy, environmental-friendly lamps.

Las Teresitas and the darkness on the beach has been a hotspot for night-time trouble over the last few years. Gangs of youngsters are often seen drinking alcohol from the boot of their cars and on the beach, while illegal evening parties are common. The Mayor and Chief of Police feel this will be eradicated with a facelift for the area.

Mighty Anthem in Santa Cruz

Diet and exercise can ‘solve’ mental fatigue NEARLY onequarter of the Canarian population in the past year has suffered mental fatigue, which leads to depression, lack of focus, clarity and weariness.

They are also unable to respond quickly and clearly, and psychologist Ana Bueno says: “Life can be hard for people at the moment, but there some things we can do. “Mental fatigue can be caused by everyday fatigue and stress, so you need to revitalise good emotional habits, do some physical exercise and include a varied, balanced diet. This diet should in-

clude vitamin B and nutritional supplements such as ginseng, which increases organic resistance.” Yet mental fatigue is not a rare condition. In fact, the psychologist confirms: “Just our normal day-to-day life can cause us to suffer this state.” The most common type is chronic fatigue stress, says Ana. “This condition usually arises when we face situations that require us to maintain a high level of performance. So we must learn to be aware of ourselves and take small breaks in the day. “Small actions help us take care of our mental level and, by establishing new habits which require little effort, we give ourselves achievable goals.”

SANTA Cruz has the Seas’, considwelcomed cruise ered the secondliner ‘Anthem of largest passenger ship in the world and the most modern of its kind. Tenerife’s capital city is the first stop in the Canaries for the ship, which has anchored after a brief stay in Funchal, in Madeira.

And Anthem will take in various European cities over the next few weeks. The ship arrived with 5,100 people, of which 3,800 were tourists and 1,300 crew. For this reason, Santa Cruz has organised a special police operation. It is the same procedure that was carried out when the ‘Queen Mary’ came.

Many citizens came to the port to watch the ship’s arrival, and the Port Authority prepared a special reception. This included the delivery of a plaque, commemorating its arrival, and a parade. And there will be more 2015 arrivals by this gigantic ship because ‘Anthem of the Seas’ will visit Santa Cruz five more times this year.

India’s deadly heatwave MORE than 1,000 people are believed to have died in the unremitting heatwave sweeping through India, with temperatures reaching 48C (118F) in some areas.

Most deaths have been the southern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and meteorological officials say the heatwave has been down to a lack of rain. Allahabad, in Uttar Pradesh, recorded 48C, while temperatures rose to above 44C (111F) in the capital city of Delhi. Authorities have urged people to stay indoors and drink plenty of fluids.

Heatwave conditions have actually prevailed in the two worst-affected southern Indian states since mid-April, but most of the deaths have occurred over the last week or so. The worst-hit state has been Andorra Pradesh, where more than 246 people have died from high temperatures in the last week. P Tulsa Rani, special commissioner of Andhra Pradesh’s disaster management department, said: “The majority of victims are people who have been exposed to the sun directly, usually aged 50 and above. “We are asking them to take precautions like using an umbrella, wearing a cap, taking huge quantities of liq-

uids like water and buttermilk, and wearing cotton clothing” The Press Trust of India news agency said the heatwave had killed more than 200 people in 10 districts in neighbouring Telangana state, with 58 people dying at the weekend. The meteorological department said the sweltering conditions were likely to continue until the end of this week. “No relief” was expected in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Delhi and other northern states as the heatwave continued, said an official. Non air-conditioned taxis were taken off the roads for five hours during the day in the state capital of Kolkata, after two drivers died from heat-stroke.

Enough to make your flesh crawl BAGS of human heads found in the kitchen of a restaurant based in a Nigerian hotel led to its closure, following allegations that it had been serving human flesh!

The BBC’s Swahili service said police were alerted by locals, who suspected something horrible was going on at the restaurant, in the south-eastern province of Anambra. Police who carried out a search of the premises were said to have found the heads, dripping blood into plastic bags, and weapons - including grenades. Ten people were arrested. One resident said:

“I’m not surprised at the shocking revelation. Every time I went to the market, I observed strange activities going on in the hotel. “People who were never cleanly dressed, and who looked a bit strange, made their way in and out of the hotel, leaving me feeling very suspicious.” A local priest who ate at the restaurant was alarmed at the prices charged after being presented with a bill for around three euros - nearly four times the daily wage for millions of Nigerian labourers. He was told the high cost was because of the piece of meat he had eaten. “I did not know I had been served human meat, and that it was so expensive,” he said.

Ireland given official caning THE Republic of Ireland has violated a European charter by not banning all corporal punishment, including smacking at home, according to a watchdog group. The European Committee of Social Rights made its ruling after a formal complaint from a UK-based charity. Corporal punishment was banned in Irish schools in 1982 and, by 1996, it was a criminal offence to hit schoolchildren. However, the Republic of Ireland is one of the few European countries that does not ban physical punishment in the home. The Association for the Protection of All Children (Approach) lodged its complaint in February 2013 to the committee, which forms part of the 47-nation Council of Europe. The charity alleged that the Republic of Ireland

had taken “no effective action” to remedy violation of Article 17 (the right of mothers and children to social and economic protection) of the European Social Charter by prohibiting all corporal punishment and other “cruel or degrading forms of punishment of children”. Approach said the existence, under Irish Common Law, of the defence of reasonable chastisement “allows parents and some other adults to assault children with impunity”.

In its decision, published on Wednesday, the ECSR said none of the Irish legislation referred to it expressly banned “all forms of corporal punishment of children that is likely to affect their physical integrity, dignity, development or psychological well-being”. The committee concluded unanimously that Irish domestic law violates Article 17 of the European Social Charter. Corporal punishment is banned in Irish schools and some care settings under the Children Act of 2001, but it is still not explicitly banned in the home. The United Nations and other organisations which protect children, including the Children’s Rights Alliance, Barnardos and the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC), have been campaigning for some

years to change the law on smacking. On its website, the ISPCC said that it believed “comprehensive, quality support and education of parents is essential in actively discouraging slapping and promoting positive, non-violent forms of discipline”. It added: “A legal ban would serve the purpose of removing slapping as an option for parents, and would steer and support parents to find alternative disciplinary methods.” The European Social Charter is a legally-binding social and economic counterpart to the European Convention on Human Rights. And the Republic of Ireland is a signatory to the charter. The ECSR comprises independent legal experts, who assess whether countries are in compliance with their commitments under the charter.

BRITISH and Spanish estate agents working on the mainland agree that confidence in the property market there continues to grow, and that the number of overseas buyers is on the rise.

What they can’t agree on is the cause. Some 71% of Spanish estate agents felt more confident about property there in the first quarter of this year than they did this time last year. That’s according to Kyero’s most recent Spanish Property Market Confidence In-

29th May - 4th June 2015

Exchange-rate: The big divide dex (SPMCI). And only 4% of agents said they felt less confident about the market this year. Increased demand from international buyers was reported by both Spanish-speaking

agents (59%) and English-speaking agents (64%). But opinions split when they’re asked about what is turning the market around. “The strength of Ster-

ling has played a key role in the confidence divide we are seeing currently between English-speaking and Spanish-speaking real estate agents in Spain,” says Martin Dell, Kyero’s director. “Some 30% of English-speaking respondents have highlighted stronger Sterling as the most significant change over the past 12 months. For Spanish-speaking agents, increased marketing tops the table of significant changes, with 26% of respondents flagging this up as the biggest change.” The difference of opinion widens further when considering Spanish property prices. Al-

most half (49%) of all the English-speaking agents surveyed would say that prices have increased, but only 18% of Spanish-speaking agents agree. And 57% of Spanish agents would say that prices have remained the same, which is significantly higher than the 34% of Englishspeaking agents who believe that’s true. Meanwhile, 25% of Spanishspeaking agents and 17% of English-speaking agents said that prices had fallen. “While English-speaking agents in Spain have been able to enjoy more confidence in the market, thanks to the Pound’s movements, their Spanish peers

have been working flatout on their marketing activity in order to achieve the same goal,” said Mr Dell. An unhealthy service! THE Canarian Government’s Ministry of Health has, over the past four years, paid 14.2 million euros in claims because of failings in the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS).

The health department was forced to reveal this after a parliamentary question was asked by Jesus Morera,

of the Socialist Party (PSOE). He demanded detailed amounts specifically, in the period between 2011 and 2014, which showed that 74 claims were paid on 156 court actions. Most of the cases were settled over malpractice, botched operations or excessive delays. In terms of civil liability in health cases, there is no scale to specify what damages can be paid. “The issue is very complicated because, for example, how much

does the loss of a leg cost - 1,000 euros, 3,000, 100,000?” queried legal expert Raul Alonso. “There is currently only a policy that operates on traffic accidents which are dependent on the injury, age, family responsibilities, and financial resources. “Even this is not universal. If a person has an accident in Tenerife and, for example, loses a hand, it is possible that he is awarded 5,000 euros, and the same case in Pontevedra gets 10,000 euros, so it’s clear there is no set standard.”

Mary Berry’s Absolute Favourites

29th May - 4th June 2015

F rida y

BBC2, 20:00

Cookery series. In this episode Mary takes inspiration from the herb garden. Only dried herbs were available when Mary started cooking, but these days there are an abundance of fresh herbs that can turn an ordinary dish into something spectacular. First up Mary demonstrates her favourite summer salad - watermelon and feta with lashings of fresh mint - before turning her hand to her grandchildren’s favourite comfort dish of succulent tomato and herb meatballs. Mary’s pesto lemon chicken is easy to assemble and is perfect for a summer lunch or light dinner, as is another of her dinner party favourites - a salmon, potato and prawn salad platter. As well as planting herbs with her granddaughters, Mary visits The Dairy in Clapham, south London, where the chef Robin Gill opens Mary’s eyes to new ways of using fresh herbs. She finishes by adding a herby twist to a lemon drizzle cake, her all-time favourite, by flavouring it with fresh lemon verbena from her garden.

Britain’s Greatest Generation BBC2, 21:00 Documentary that tells the stories of the extraordinary last survivors of the generation who fought or lived through World War II. This final episode of Britain’s Greatest Generation follows the lives of some of the servicemen and women of the Second World War across seventy years of British history, from 1945 up to the present day, including Arctic convoy survivor Austin Byrne, former Fleet Air Arm pilot and Scotland football manager Bobby Brown and ex-prisoner of war Jim Purcell. Whilst for some, life was getting better after the Second World War, there were still many people in society who were victims of prejudice. Earl Cameron was determined to change this and recalls how he broke through the colour bar in the British film industry. Novelist Diana Athill also played an important role in the movement towards both sexual and racial openness in the 1960s and speaks about how she flouted the taboo on mixed-race relationships at that time.

Britain’s Got Talent - Live ITV1, 19:30 Ant and Dec present the last live semi-final of Britain’s Got Talent as the final remaining nine acts compete to win the ultimate prize of 250,000 pounds and a slot on the Royal Variety Performance. They perform in front of a studio audience and judges Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and David Walliams. It is then up to the viewers at home to choose which acts have what it takes to make it to the final. The act with the highest number of public votes automatically goes through to the live grand final. The two runner-up acts will then face the judges, who will pick their favourite to go through to the live shows.

Antiques Roadshow BBC1, 20:00 The Antiques Roadshow visits Ashton Court in Bristol, where intriguing finds include a nautilus shell engraved with Brunel’s suspension bridge, an automaton that smokes and, the newest item the team have ever seen, a piece of Banksy graffiti. The latter was discovered in a doorway close to a local youth club. Pictures specialist Rupert Maas offers his thoughts on the murky world of authenticating illegal graffiti and an artist whose identity is a well-kept secret. Hilary Kay admires a nautilus shell engraved with an image of the city’s famous suspension bridge, while ceramics specialist John Sandon wonders if a delftware posset pot might have originated much closer to home. A large globe clock, once given in lieu of a debt, turns out to be far more significant than its owner could ever have imagined. A late-19th-century automaton of a young French gentleman steals the show by smoking a cigarette, only to be promptly told off by specialist Jon Baddeley.

Jackpot247 We begin in spring as he sets off across the moor in search of a herd of male red deer. This is when they begin to lose their antlers and Johnny wants to show us what they look like. Then he’s off to meet Bob Sampson, an old friend who has had a brilliant idea about how to construct an underground badger house. Johnny and Bob set about converting an unused septic tank and bury it complete with remote cameras on Johnny’s land on the edge of Exmoor. He’s hoping that for the first time, he will be able to film badgers underground. Always a busy man, Johnny heads now to the little village of Brayford where he grew up to open the spring fair. The annual ‘Duck Race’ helps raise funds for village projects and is a great way of bringing young and old together. Along with the red deer Exmoor is also famous for its ponies. Although they roam freely, the herds are owned and maintained by different farming families. Johnny is joined by Rex Milton, who tells him the history of his herd and shows him some newborn foals. Of course spring is the time when many animals have their young and along with a Grey Heron and a Little Owl, Johnny also gets some fantastic close up shots of a beautiful Tawny Owl chick. For his next challenge Johnny has to leave Exmoor. He’s in search of a very rare sight - adders mating and he’s amazed and thrilled when, despite his nerves, he gets closer to them that he’s ever been before. The programme ends as Johnny meets up with Bob Sampson again to see if there are any badgers in the underground house. They watch delighted as a clan of young badgers play, scratch and sleep completely at home in their new underground house.

The Secret Life of Your House ITV1, 21.00

The Secret Life of Your House is a unique and entertaining natural history experiment, in which leading entomologist George McGavin deliberately infests a house with thousands of animals, which we normally think of as ‘pests’. The experiment gives us an incredible insight into the ecology that exists right under our noses, living off and around us. Major pest control companies are reporting up to a 50% rise in call outs and the British Pest Control Association have expressed real concerns about our ability to control infestations that get out of hand. But George thinks that these house pests are misunderstood. He’s going to welcome them in as houseguests, marvel in their glory and see what they’d get up to if we didn’t intervene. “You don’t need to go the Plains of Africa to witness fascinating wildlife, it’s right here in your kitchen”, he says. After introducing the animals to the house – from bed bugs, to spiders, mice, to cockroaches – he lets them loose for a month of to find out what they get up to. George even stays in the house and makes himself a guinea pig in the experiment – when he sleeps between bed bug-infested sheets for a night.

It’s been years since they last came to Hazelwood and cook Julie, housekeeper Sarah, cleaner Dawn, gamekeeper Sean and gardener Godfrey are struggling to keep up appearances on a shoestring budget. But with Lord Hazelwood’s health failing and mounting debts of £6.5 million and counting, is there more to the visit that first meets the eye? The future of Hazelwood and their jobs looks in jeopardy as the staff discover the Americans are there for business rather than pleasure. Godfrey, who has Asperger’s syndrome, thinks he has the answer to all their problems. He been working on a formula to crack the lottery for years and this time he’s sure he’s finally worked it out. He knows the winning numbers - fourteen and a half million would surely solve all their problems...

The Cube ITV1, 20.00

Phillip Schofield is back with the ninth series of the BAFTA award-winning The Cube in a brand new day and time slot – giving fans a mid-week fix of the game show that tests contestants’ skill, nerve and determination to win. With the return of our favourite games alongside a host of new ones, the question remains – who can beat The Cube, and will anyone walk away with a quarter of a million pounds? In the first of the brand new series Londonderry born radiographer Lindsey is supported by her parents, boyfriend and best friend. Working in the trauma department of a Southampton Hospital Lindsey hopes the experience of her job will help her stay calm under pressure when taking on The Cube. Tackling some wellknown games including Avoid and Formation, Lindsey does her best to keep her cool but will her competitive nature get the better of her, and can she put her best foot forward? Her dad Harold is a big fan of the series but it’s fair to say he’s glad it’s her facing The Cube as opposed to him! The second contestant to take on The Cube is retired Yorkshire man Keith – at 70 years old, he’s the oldest person to ever take on the challenge. A strong believer that it’s life experience that will put him in good stead, he has his wife, grandson, son and daughter-in-law cheering him on. Despite thinking the Cube would make a fantastic greenhouse Keith keeps a cool head as he faces some games that would have other contestants climbing the walls, but will his strong start continue? And will his love of bowling prove helpful or will he be longing for the green grass of home? Facing brand new games including Motion Build, which sees the contestant rotating on a platform trying to build a tower, and Contain which asks players to throw a ball into a box with a rapidly opening and closing trap door - will our two hopefuls have their speed, tenacity and nerves tested to the limit as they try to beat The Cube?

Born Naughty? Channel 4, 20:00

One in 20 British children aged between five and 16 have serious behavioural issues, ranging from refusing to eat or do what they are told, to swearing, hitting and breaking things. In Born Naughty?, family GP Dr Dawn Harper and consultant paediatrician Dr Ravi Jayaram help children with behavioural problems, as well as their long-suffering parents, who often have to wait years for a definitive diagnosis and appropriate help. The doctors meet eight-year- old Charlie, who can be so destructive and violent that his mum Maxine has had to call the police. He has been excluded from mainstream school after he attacked other pupils and the head teacher. Dr Ravi and the experts wonder if a controversial new diagnosis might be an issue. Meanwhile, three-yearold Billy’s behaviour is worrying his mum: he kicks and screams when he’s upset and often doesn’t get to sleep until midnight. Could autism explain Billy’s behaviour? Or is there a less drastic explanation?

Tenerife Opera 2015. Ana Bolena Anna Bolena is the first work of Donizetti’s Queens’ Trilogy and is the essence of the dramatic bel canto that the composer would later repeat in Roberto Devereux, María Estuardo and, particularly, Lucia di Lammermoor. Donizetti applied all his talent to the psychological portrayal of his characters in this delightfully melodic piece. The all star cast features Mariella Devia (one of the greatest bel canto sopranos of the last forty years) in the leading role, Tenerife’s most international tenor, Celso Albelo, and mezzo-soprano, Alessandra Volpe, who returns to Ópera de Tenerife after her tremendous success last season in Nabucco.

Entertainment

29th May - 4th June 2015

By Jamie Droo KARAOKE has been a standard form of entertainment in most bars for years, developing into a worldwide phenomenon. The word karaoke was derived from two Japanese words put together: the word kara, meaning empty, and the word oke, meaning orchestra. But nobody really knows who invented karaoke. Some believe it was a Japanese musician called Daisuke Inoue, who created a machine, styled like a cassette tape, which he would lease out to Japanese party people. These machines contained the backing tracks of popular songs that Inoue would create for people to sing along to. Musical entertainment was nearly always offered at Japanese dinner parties, so these machines proved very popular. And it was back then, in 1971, that the phenomenon began to grow. Audio company Clarion laid claim to creating the first-ever commercially-sold karaoke machine a year earlier, but there is no existence of the patent. So the invention’s history is somewhat unclear, but there is no

It’s The age of Karaoke rage

doubting the rise in popularity of this entertaining pastime over the last 45 years. Nowadays, nearly all entertainment venues have the latest karaoke technology on hand, with tens of thousands of songs available, from of all genres of music, from which people can choose. There are many dynamics to karaoke, from the methods used by the host to the standard of equipment used in the venue - it’s all relative to its attraction. But there is a dark side

to karaoke! “Seriously?” you might ask? I call it karaoke rage. Okay, it’s a little tongue-in-cheek, but karaoke is responsible for making, and occasionally breaking, someone’s holiday. In a busy bar where there might be 12 singers waiting to sing their favourite tune, there will inevitably be a little frustration about waiting times. Most songs are at least three minutes long, and even if the songs are stitched together back to back, that would leave a minimum wait of around 36-

40 minutes before the last ones are called up to sing. I’m sure that every compere reading this knows exactly where I am going with this story. We have all heard so many different excuses from wannabe singers as to why they should be on sooner than their turn. The best one is: “We’re going in a minute so can I be next?” The majority of them who are “going in a minute,” end up staying and putting in another

What’s New? LAST week I reviewed a young man who is just breaking on to the Tenerife scene, and I talked about how to go about it when you are just starting out.

Earlier this week I caught up with one of the most popular singers on the Island, the award-winning Marc Craig, who has been entertaining the masses here for a little over 16 years. For most of that time, he has chosen to be a resident entertainer in one venue rather than tour his show. Marc was the founding member of The Wildboyz, an immensely-popular duo. They performed every night at Leonardos, in Las Americas, for years, filling the bar seven nights a week. Then, as a solo singer, he moved to Vivo, where he built up a huge following. He is supremely talented and can turn his voice to practically any song. There are hundreds of brilliant online reviews of Marc, and he never fails to wow a crowd. Recently, he decided to put a new show together for the circuit and is available for bookings from today. Marc’s repertoire is vast and his vocal range endless, so it is little wonder that Marc Craig is being promoted as The Voice. He will still be performing a few spots at Vivo, but has decided to give the circuit a try. He has also re-invented The Wildboyz, teaming up with Pip Brown. Marc’s first solo show takes play today (Friday) at the Euro Bar, Costa del Silencio, at 3pm, and is hosted by Oasis Fm DJ Gordon Slayney. There, you will also see the initial Wildboyz reinvention. If you would like to book Marc, call him directly on 664 145 073. If you have an entertainment venue, you will probably be getting a visit at some stage from Marc because he is an entertainer who knows exactly how to market himself - and is certainly more than capable of holding an audience. Good luck on the circuit Marc and, hopefully, I will get to see your full show in the near future.

request - and were never actually going anywhere in the first place. This creates karaoke rage in others, who have been keeping a watchful eye on proceedings and are anxiously awaiting their turn. Other reasons for karaoke rage can be wide and varied. In a bar containing, say, 50-60 people, there will never be 100% of the audience

wanting to sing on karaoke. I would say there’s never more than 10% of any audience who are regular karaoke singers. They are actually in the minority, in the grand scale of things, so the host may choose to focus on the majority and play music to which the rest of the audience can dance. The karaoke singer will not understand this and again, karaoke rage sets in. Who gets the brunt of all this rage? The poor old compere. He or she is responsible for entertaining the whole audience and has to contend with complaints from those waiting for their Godgiven right to sing. As I said before, this is a little tongue-incheek, but karaoke rage is real. It has been known her for tempers to boil over because of a simple karaoke request. Love it or loathe it, karaoke is here to stay and I tip my hat to all the comperes who have to deal with karaoke rage this summer. I wonder if Daisuke Inoue is looking down on all the karaoke bars now and thinking: “I’ve created a monster.”

Capricho the eye-catcher

THIS week, let me take you on a whim - the literal translation of Capricho. Juani and Ginés are a couple of fine wine-makers who take charge of their winery with lots of passion and bags of pride.

Year after year, they bring us excellent wines and one of them, the Capricho Val de Paxariñas, is a real treat. This variety Godello and with 15% of Doña Blanca, has obtained a very expressive and innovative white. The grapes come from vineyards which are over 50 years old. It’s colour is a white straw yellow. On the nose, the notes of green apple and hay, as well as aromatic

mountain herbs, are predominant. The palate is fresh, persistent and with a slight sweet touch that subtracts personality. It is a white to accompany white fish in sauce and mushroom salad or pasta. This wine will give you yellow, very dense, to serve greenish reflections in the glass. Flint in the foreground, spicy, white pepper and pear. There is a presence of a very fine carbonic, very friendly at the entrance

in the mouth, juicy and satiny. It has a very long ageing potential. It takes very little time bottling to show full power. The Capricho is a different wine - innovative, with an aciditysugar alcohol balance, which is a perfect fit. And there is a nice reduction in nose with a good development in the mouth. It is a white wine DO Bierzo from the Bodegas Gancedo, and is a blend of varieties, Godello (85%) and Doña Blan-

ca (15%). The soils are sandy and the vineyards which produce this Capricho Val Paxariñas are low density - about 3,000 vines per hectare. Production is, therefore limited, with only one or two kilos per strain. The processing and finishing of the Capricho Val Paxariñas is made in stainless steel. So if you want an innovative white wine with a high, aromatic intensity and with the presence of lots of fresh fruit and floral aromas with spicy

herbal notes on mineral background, this is for you. It has a neat and bright yellow tear in your glass. If I’m raving about this wine, then I apologise. But it truly is magnificent. And after the first glass, the Capricho will be your choice as well. Pitfalls of giving birth By Val Sainsbury WELCOMING your baby into the world is a typically happy time for mum, dad and the family.

But for thousands of mothers, their initial joy can give way to severe depression. While around 85% of new mums suffer the “baby blues”, 15% will be plagued by post-natal depression. Much scientific literature has warned against new mothers taking medication, cautioning of the dangers of passing on traces of the drugs, for those who breastfeed. But scientists at King’s College London have found the benefits of new mothers consumed by post-natal depression taking antidepressants are considerable, and should be considered as a treatment option. The new study found the drugs can have a beneficial effect, and are linked to better rates of treatment and remission. Emma Molyneaux, lead author, from the University’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, said their findings were important “because of the limited research exploring the use of anti-depressants to treat postnatal depression”.

She added: “We would urge that treatment decisions during the postnatal period consider the potential benefits, as well as risks of medication, and as well as the risks of untreated depression for both mother and baby.” Guidelines recommend psychological interventions for those women suffering mild-to-moderate depression. But they caution that the risk-benefit ratio of using anti-depressants be considered before using them during the post-natal period. Doctors have to weigh up the potential effect that medication could have on a baby, with the likely benefit of psychological intervention. Researchers conducted a systematic review of six randomised, controlled trials, made up of 596 women. They discovered that antidepressants were beneficial to those who were diagnosed with post-natal depression. The study included meta-analysis, which pooled data from three of the trials. It found that of the 72 women with post-natal depression, randomised to be given treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors - a form of anti-depressant - 54% reported “much improved” symptoms, or a 50%-plus reduction in their symptoms. That was compared with 36% who were randomised to receive a placebo treatment.

The researchers discovered that remission rates - those women no longer meeting the validated criteria for depression - were also improved. Nearly 50% of participants given anti-depressants were found to be in remission, compared with 26% in the placebo group. Their findings related to a treatment period of between six to eight weeks. Co-author Kylee Trevillion said: “There have been relatively few trials of anti-depressants for post-natal depression, and few studies to date have included women with severe depression. “Post-natal depression impacts not only the mother but also the rest of the family, and more research is needed in this area to improve outcomes for mothers and their families.” Professor Louise Howard, who led the study, added: “Some anti-depressants are safer than others for mothers who are breast-feeding. So mothers seeking advise for depressive symptoms should ensure that their doctor knows if they are breast-feeding.” The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, was funded by the Medical Research Council, Tommy’s baby charity, the National Institute for Health Research and the NIHR’s Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre.

CLONE WARS

IF you are stuck in a hair rut because you’ve had the same old style for years, maybe you should have a word with your favourite stylist.

It’s often not your fault if you seem to be happy with what you have. But if you don’t speak out, nothing will change. Often, it doesn’t take much to revamp a style - maybe just a change of colour or adding a fringe to what you already have. And changing styles does not mean the whole hair has to be cut off. Sometimes, you can keep those precious, long locks. But going for a total colour change will definitely get you noticed. There’s nothing worse than plodding along with what you had three years ago. And us stylists also get bored, which is why we so love to hear clients ask for something different. Just as you may want to change your hair, trust in your stylists when they offer a new opinion about what’s sitting on your head. Yes, we know it’s your hair, but many clients tell me that after building confidence with their styles for a while, they just want to leave it in our hands (their hair, that is). This is called trust! Just as you have your favourite clothes shops because they match

your style and give you the look you want, this works in the same way by finding a stylist you trust. Often, when someone recommends a stylist to you, it doesn’t mean that he or she is going to give you the look you want. We all work differently and have varying opinions about your looks. It’s just a matter of receiving a good consultation BEFORE any work is carried out. This can eliminate most upsets after your salon service. If you have been advised over

the cut, the colour and the upkeep of your style, there shouldn’t be many problems after the service is carried out. Things in the world of hair recently have become a little same-old, same-old. We don’t see many women standing out from the crowd by pushing hair boundaries. Instead, we tend to see cloning, as if most women want to appear the same for fear of not looking like someone from a celebrity magazine. Well, isn’t it time we became our own celebrities, with an original look that others want to emulate? Think about it the next time you flick through a magazine. Do you see originality, or has everyone got long wavy hair these days?

By Monica Dyson THERE must have been a few double takes by people the other week when they saw a naked man wandering about, high with drugs, on a Sheffield street.

And it certainly seemed to have stopped the traffic before he was taken into custody by police! I also read that UKIP leader Nigel Farage, on the recent General Election trail, knocked at one door to be greeted by a young woman who was completely naked (gosh, she must have had a shock!). And although it was some time ago, White House usher Skip Allen tells of the time he delivered a message to President Ronald Reagan and found him wandering around in the buff. Something he did all the time, apparently … in the White House, at least! Nudism and naturism is definitely alive and well, and it can be closer than you think! The Full Monty has just been on in Sheffield and yes, I

29th May - 4th June 2015

Naked, just as nature intended!

did go to see it, although clever use of lights hid the nudity from view! A friend of mine, living in South Yorkshire, has expressed concern that a nearby farm is this month holding the 6th Nude stock event, which is certified by the British Camping and Caravanning Club. However, the weeklong event is well managed, doesn’t hurt anyone or cause any trouble with local people and, really, if that’s what floats your boat... It seems to be a chance for naturists to socialise with other like-minded people and is a real family affair. Activities include yoga, body-painting, Scottish dancing and darts (ouch!). I read a quote recently by someone who asked: “Why are most nudists the people you wouldn’t want to see naked?’ Perhaps a little unfair and unkind! However, if you happen to live in Spielplatz, Hertfordshire, which is a sleepy little village near Bricket Wood and quite unique. Though in the heart of the London commuter belt, you will mostly see people in the nude only, whether you like the

look of them or not! Founded by Charles Mackie in 1929 when he bought the land for £500, it has 34 bungalows for permanent residence, and another 24 for holiday lets. Strictly speaking, you don’t have to be a naturist to live there, but you would probably not be able to buy a house if you’re not. Its previous inhabitants have included Ross Nichols, a founder member of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, and Gerald Gardner, who established a coven at Bricket Wood in developing the Wicca Religion. Having lived in relative anonymity for over 85 years, the villagers made a documentary a

year or so ago for television because they were concerned that property developers intended to disturb their peaceful way of life. The first naturist club in the UK opened in Essex in 1924, and by 1942 there were a number of “sun clubs” and the inception of the British Sunbathers Association. By 1964, it became The Central Council for British Naturists after it was decided that the term “naturist” was more acceptable than “nudist”. There are still naturist beaches around the UK as there are in many other countries worldwide, and you’ve even got one in Tenerife. Brighton made seaside history in 1980 when the

first public nudist beach was opened, within easy walking distance of the Town Centre. But there has been nude bathing on Fraisthrope Sands, near Bridlington, for even longer, until, in 1998, the local council erected notices stating: Naturism is prohibited on East Riding of Yorkshire beaches”. A further sign said: “Any person committing an act of indecency will be liable to prosecution”. The Fraisthorpe United Naturists complained that the signs were grossly insulting, and insinuated that naturists were perverts. The signs were removed and naturists continued to use the sands. So, why are so many

people embracing the naturist’s way of life? They say it is fun, is natural and you get an all-over tan, though I’m not sure if that applies to Bridlington, in the North of England! It’s good for you. Millions of people have discovered how good it feels to have the sun and the breeze on their bodies, and they are more relaxed, less selfconscious or depressed. Nudity is a great leveller. It doesn’t matter what age, colour or creed you are. Everyone is treated with the same level of respect, and as equals. As a “spin off” from the present popularity of cycling, there are even Naked Bike Rides. Sheffield, protesting against the growing car culture, took part in it a year or so ago, when some enthusiasts rode round the city. And there are naturist swimming sessions at a local swimming pool. Earlier this month it was World Naked Gardening Day. Giving “body freedom and promotion of health and acceptance of our relationship to the natural environment”. I can only say that it will have to be a whole lot warmer before I’m seen planting my bedding plants au natural!

Accion del Sol news

Learning curve for children WE firmly believe the way to ease the dire situation here in Tenerife with abandoned dogs is to educate children.

Accion is fully committed to its educational programme, with more and more schools and colleges visiting the refuge weekly. The kids are taught basic care and animal welfare in a fun, hands-on approach manner, to which the children understand and can relate.

The staff are always in need of paper, pens and other various arts-andcraft items to help with our educational programme. Tickets are seven euros for adults and five for children, and you can call 922 778 630 for further details. A welcome reward Some of our dogs have spent many years in the refuge, waiting patiently for a loving new home, so please visit us if you are looking to adopt one. Or maybe you have

a little spare time and would like to exercise a dog. There are so many animals here who would love a walk and some human companionship - apart from the staff, of course - for an hour or two. Opening hours We are open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between

2-5pm, and on Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm. The refuge is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and on Public Holidays. Kids’ dream comes true MORE than 40 children from various schools and organi-

sations in the South met in Los Cristianos to be taken by coach to the Northern airport.

They were on their way to an all-inclusive “Dream Holiday” in Torremolinos, on the Costa del Sol. Members of Tenerife Isla Sur Lions club have been organising these holidays for 20 years. And last week, having said goodbye to a 35-strong group of under-privileged UK children and their carers, they thank all the club’s supporters who make these holidays so special for so many needy children.

Hugh turns up Palm Mar heat PALM Mar’s annual May Golf Competition pitched the team against Golf del Sur, Adeje and Las Americas, with many of the 24 players travelling from the UK to compete in the week-long event. And not even the exceptional heat could prevent the golfers from having a fantastic week. Overall winner was Hugh Richmond, the event being sponsored by Carl Hodgson of Sign Fab (UK), with Ian Ross achieving the best score on all the par 3s. This competition

was sponsored by Tera & Terry Cassidy. Safdar Ali & Nigel Pinfield won the The Pairs event, sponsored by Fañabe’s Colonial Bar, which also provided transport, food and entertainment on the evening of the second day. And what a night it was! The Ladies’ event, sponsored by Garry Louch, of ACS, was won by Ann Oulton, and the week finished with a Presentation Evening last Thursday at Palm Mar’s MIX Bar. A big thank-you goes

to the owner, Antonio Jose Parra Rojas, who provided excellent food and superb entertainment. A sum of 235 euros was raised during the evening for Janet Jones, who is taking part in a sponsored swim on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support. The entire week was a huge success, thanks to the excellent organisation and help from everyone,. Dates have already been fixed for next year, and players’ names have also been noted.

By Sue McDonald BUYING a new bed is something we all have to do now and again or at least getting a new mattress. We spend a lot of time in bed, so it´s worth spending a bit of time and getting it right!

A good mattress can last up to 10 years, so you should buy the best you can afford. Every 100 euros you spend represents just 2.7 cents a night over those 10 years. And when you think you can spend up to eight hours out of every 24 in the bed, that´s not

29th May - 4th June 2015

Beddie Buys...

a bad investment! The most standard sizes for beds are 90cm which is a single, 135cm which is a small double, and 150cm which is normal double - also known as a king-size in the UK. Bear in mind that if you buy the small double, each person will have considerably less space than in a single bed, so if you have the room to go for a bigger size, this may be a better option. Other sizes are also available, up to 180cm, or even two metres if you have space. The type of mattress you buy depends on your personal preference. There are a couple of extra things you need to consider when buying a bed in Tenerife. Because of our lovely climate, you probably don’t want anything too soft, such as 100% latex, because while it’s

very comfortable, this will trap your body heat. That is sold as an advantage in the UK, but it isn’t really one here, especially in the summer. Orthopaedic mattresses are much firmer to provide support, and there are various types and styles between these extremes. One of the best sellers here is a model featuring a sprung interior,

with a 6cm or 7cm layer of visco-elastic foam on each side. It means you sink into the mattress for comfort, but only to a certain extent, where the sprung core provides support. This type of bed will suit most people, and is a good compromise for price and comfort if you rent your property out. Another thing to think about is the bed base.

The most normal arrangement here is a solid base on legs as this makes it easy to clean underneath the bed. If you are short of space, you might like to consider a storage base as seen in the photo. They are available in all the standard sizes, and come with a hydraulic mechanism, which makes it easy to open with all the bedding in place. In small

apartments this can be a real benefit, providing a huge amount of storage for luggage, bedding or even shoes! The headboards here are normally fixed to the wall so that the bed can be pulled out for cleaning, Although this obviously isn’t an option if you choose the storage beds. Your headboard can be chosen to tone with your interior decorating scheme, and can range from wrought iron, upholstered or in wood, according to your preference. If you’ve had your mattress for more than 10 years, or it´s starting to get a bit uncomfortable, it may be time to think about replacing your bed. After all, a good night’s sleep is priceless! All items are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789 729.

A girl’s best friend

By Carl Pattison

THERE’S one sure way to brighten up any outfit, and one definite solution which will enable you stand out from the crowd.

It’s the one item most woman can’t have enough of, and that’s jewellery. From designer to the High-Street brand, there can never be an excuse not to wear at least one item of something which will complement your outfit perfectly.

Gone are the days when you had to spend a small fortune to look amazing. A simple dress can be made into a true statement by just adding a few pieces of bling.

They don’t have to be over the top or too dramatic - just two simple pieces are often enough to set off any item of clothing. It doesn’t have to be a

night out, either, when you decide to wear your best jewels. Costume jewellery is so affordable that you can wear it any day.

Try to stick to a theme with your items, and don’t get carried away with impulse purchases. Think about what you will wear it with, and how many of your outfits it will complement. If you are petite, go for smaller, delicate pieces because larger items will drown you. The same goes if you have a larger frame because big statement pieces look amazing and draw attention away from areas you may not like. For example, an ample-chested woman should stay clear of large, collar-type neck-

laces as this will only draw attention to that area. Instead, leave out the necklace and go for a chunkier bracelet and attention-grabbing earrings. If you want to wear gold items, make sure they are obviously fake because trying to pull off a “real” gold chain can look tacky and cheap. Silver looks more classy and can look like white gold, but don’t overdo it. When you feel like splashing out, go for timeless items - pieces you will want to wear in 20 years. There’s nothing worse than having an expensive piece stuck in your drawer for years because it’s not in fashion. There’s absolutely no need to spend a fortune because there are plenty of good fashion shops around which have their own range of inexpensive jewels. It’s just a matter of finding what complements you and your look. Try not to go for the same items every time. Try on something different and see how it or they can totally change an outfit … from drab to fab!

Motoring

By Emma at Motorworld

IS it okay to exceed the speed limit to overtake? Most drivers will probably say Yes, but the rules and regulations in Spain are far more complex than some other countries.

And while that answer is correct in certain circumstances, in others it is a big fat NO! In the first instance, you must look at the type of vehicle to which these rules apply: to cars and motorbikes only! So the likes of lorries, car transporters, motor-homes and cars towing do not fit the bill. The type of road and area will denote whether overtaking can be permitted and speed limits exceeded. When they are allowed, the maximum a driver

29th May - 4th June 2015

Watch your speed while overtaking can exceed the speed limit while overtaking is 20km per hour. Somewhat surprisingly, this ruling does not apply to motorways and dual carriageways; nor in towns or cities. Yet here in Tenerife, dual carriageways are few and far between. And often, it is not clear where a town or city ends if the signpost is missing - obscured by trees or maybe a large, parked vehicle. You should remember that in the event of a head-on collision - perhaps through an overtaking movement - the impact doubles. So if Car A is travelling at 70km per hour and Car B is also travelling at the same speed, the impact is like a crash happening at 140km per hour, which, obviously, could have fatal or life-threatening consequences to the drivers and passengers. It would most likely result in both cars being written off by their

insurance companies, which could prove costly to both parties, in addition to any injuries sustained. Where a road has a clear speed limit displayed, such as 70, 50, 40, 30 or 20, these rules do not apply under any circumstances.

In Spain apart from motorways and dual carriageways, roads are classified as conventional roads, These are single carriageways with no central reservation and those outside of towns, built-up areas and/or industrial areas. Las

Chafiras comes to mind because, in certain parts, it is a clear combination of industrial and housing areas. So, no matter what the circumstances, if there is a speed-limit sign displayed, you cannot overtake under this exceptional clause in

the law. This, of course, would be of great importance should there be an accident, whether or not the police are called to the scene. The insurance companies would be aware of the rules, and the accident claim form and speed limits would assist them in apportioning blame. On a conventional road, with a hard shoulder of 1.5 metres or more, the limit is 100km per hour unless otherwise signposted. If there is no hard shoulder and no speed signs, the limit is 90, but my advice is to err on the side of caution - and be aware of the situation around you at all times. So if you believe you will not get fined or given points for speeding under some of the above instances, think again. Driver-safety and that of pedestrians is first and foremost. And the above exceptions are few and far between.

Confusing Clock The story goes that when the Swiss did not have so much experience yet with making clocks, a painful mistake was made with a church clock. The clock was officially put into use when it showed 6 o’clock. Soon it was noticed that the hour hand and minute hand had been interchanged and attached to the wrong axes. The result was that the hour hand moved with a speed twelve times higher than the minute hand. When the clock maker arrived, a remarkable thing happened: on the moment he inspected the clock, it showed exactly the right time again. The Question: If the clock started at 6 o’clock in the correct position, then what was the first moment that it showed the correct time again?

Tenerife’s Real challenge Sporting Gijon 2 CD Tenerife 0

By Roscoe EVEN the most one-eyed fan knew that Raul Agne’s side would leave Gijon would nothing and, in many ways, it was a pointless match.

Sporting didn’t close the gap on Girona in the race for promotion, and Tenerife’s insipid display suggested that a third game in one

week had gotten into the legs. Mind you, after the high-energy win in Sabadell, it was hardly a surprise. Tenerife held out until just before halftime, when Isma Lopez opened the scoring. Hugo Fraile’s second just after the hour mark finished the match off, and Tenerife thoughts switched to this Sunday. Real Betis have already secured the title and promotion to La Liga, but nobody expects them to take their foot off the gas.

Former CDT and WBA boss Pepe Mel,who returns to the Heliodoro, will be desperate to finish the season off in style. As will dangerman striker Ruben Castro. The 33-year-old Betis legend has plundered 32 goals in a stellar season. Not only does he want more, but he was born in Las Palmas. And boy, does he hate CD Tenerife! Also returning is Las Galletas lad Bruno. He has had an impressive first season for the green-and-whites,

carrying on the form he showed for Tenerife over the previous few seasons. He has enjoyed the move, and it will be interesting to see how he gets on in La Liga. He will get a warm hand on Sunday. It’s simple for Tenerife. Win and they are safe. Lose and it all goes down to the last weekend. I will explain the possible scenarios next week if it comes to that. But Tenerife have to put that out of their heads. They have to focus on the win and, in many ways, the team talk is simple for Agne. Play like you did against Position

EDDIE HOWE, who has led little Bournemouth to England’s top division for their first time, has been voted Manager of the Year by the League Managers’ Association (LMA). The 37-year-old beat Watford boss Slavisa Jokanovic, Ipswich’s Mick McCarthy and former Brentford manager Mark Warburton to the prestigious prize at Tuesday’s ceremony in London. And as well as topping Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho for the leading honour, he took the Championship Manager of the Year

Sabadell! The club are doing their bit. Tickets are as cheap as chips, with some costing just three euros. The stadium should be rocking and if you have never been, then this is your match. You will be watching a future La Liga team in full flow and the hosts will be looking to bring them down a peg or two. It really is set up beautifully. The game kicks off at 5pm. There are also some big games in the playoffs this weekend. CD Marino need a miracle after being chinned by a decent-looking UD San Pedro.

I warned last week that they were full of goals, and they took the chances that came their way. Juanfri, who looks a level above, opened the scoring, and Pedro made it 2-0. It was a different story in La Palma as Mensajero took a lead to the mainland. In a tight encounter, Yeray’s goal just before half-time gives them a slender lead at Pondevedra. They have a real chance of seeing it through and getting back into the third tier of Spanish football. But even if they lose, they have the safety net of another bite at the apple.

Howe’s about that!

award after steering Bournemouth to the title. He is the first manager from outside the Premier League to take the overall award since Steve Coppell, then with Reading, won in 2006. “It means everything,” said Howe. “I’m so thankful. It was an amazing season and I’m thankful to get over the line, thanks to the fans and the board. The reward now is to challenge ourselves against the very best.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who presented the award, praised the former defender, saying: “He’s done a fine job, a remarkable job, and done it with style and humility.” Howe was a cult figure at Bournemouth, even before managing them. He spent much of his playing days there, before a knee injury at Portsmouth was to cut short his career after his return to Dean Court. This is his

second managerial spell there. Mourinho, whose, team ran away with the title and also won the Capital One Cup, lifted the Premier League Manager of the Year prize. The Portuguese genius did not attend the London ceremony because he was at Chelsea’s own club awards night. And despite the accolades, Mourinho, who moaned his way through the season about the so-called injustices his

team were dealt, was still complaining about their perceived lack of recognition in his speech at the Chelsea event. “I don’t think my players got the respect they deserve after what they did, from day one until the last day,” he said. “And these are words that I really feel - serious words.” The LMA League One award went to Steve Cotterill after Bristol City’s title-winning season.

The only divisional award not to go to the title-winning manager was the League Two gong, which went to Wycombe’s Gareth Ainsworth, despite his side’s play-off final defeat by penalties against Southend. Bradford City’s Phil Parkinson was named FA Cup Manager of the Year after his side’s startling 4-2 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and victory over Sunderland, en-route to the quarter-finals.

Dazza hits a real gem! DARREN proved to be a diamond skipper for Emerald Lounge after striking an all-comers’ high check-out for the new campaign.

His sweet 149 finish came during a 7-1 thrashing of Palms

Sports Bar, who, it goes without saying, were green with envy! The Pub and Bar Phoenix share top spot after both recorded 7-1 victories, while Boothen Army had Sam shooting a maximum as his side crushed stablemates Boothen Titans. A fixtures’ quirk meant that Playboys

played Shamrocks for the second week running - and won by the same 5-3 score. Bar 180 A got their season off to a flier with a whitewash over Pas O Nadas A in a match which included a 136 finish by Bar 180 boss-man Richard. Elsewhere, Gaffers and Exiles played out a 4-4 draw.

Could Phoenix Flights be the surprise Division 2 package this season? Time will tell, but they have kicked off in fine form and now sit proudly in first place after hammering Picassos 7-1. Another surprise - and a neatly-wrapped package - is Ourplace Playgirls’ Theresa, or T, as she is known. She had a

After both drawing last week, Spear Chuckers and Clouseaus squared up at the Crown and produced another tied match. Sundowners’ opening-day defeat at the Phoenix was quickly erased from their memories as they notched a 5-3 win against Waterfall B. All in all, a fine start to our season. No complaints, and all teams still intact. Good work!

corker against Naughty Nautas, with a 180 and a 110 check-out in her team’s 5-3 victory. Barracuda Hunters made it back-to-back wins by beating Pas O Nadas B, while Marilyns held the trebles leg to squeak a win over new boys Bar Leones. Gaffers Jucee Girls’ solid start sees them sitting nicely in fourth spot, and they also nicked the last rubber for a successful night at Summerlands.

Close call as Toffees wrap it up THE curtain has come down on another Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League season, and we have a new champion in Frank Devaney’s Toffees.

They moved into top spot last week, taking a 10-point into the final weekend. His team were not at their best, but Ray Malone’s Inter Malone couldn’t quiet

bridge the gap, eventually finishing just three points short of Frank as runners-up. Jamie Palmer’s Spartans were also late challengers but again, couldn’t keep pace in the home straight, eventually finishing third. Stephen Snook’s Kingsmead Krunchers made ground on the leaders last week after being the highest scorers, but they failed to repeat that feat, eventually settling for

fourth spot. But Nick Abbott’s Boomtown Rabz will be kicking themselves. After leading the league for so long, they performed a Liverpool in the final few weekends and collapsed, slipping from first to finish fifth eventually. The final team of the week award goes to Paul Jones with his PJ’s Plodders, who scored a respectable 70 points. He has Santi Carzola, Scott Dann, Mark Albrighton and

Sergio Aguero to thank as they all contributed double-figure totals. The Oasis Fm Towers battle also went right down to the final weekend. Adi Benson had a slight lead over Chris Elkington, but he fell short of the finish line with Chris taking the bragging rights by seven points. Roscoe finished third and John Zammit took the wooden spoon. He does realise, doesn’t he, that he has to take the others for a steak

now? So now we have a few months’ rest and relaxation before we do

it all again. Thanks for your participation, and see you all next season.

Gaffers can’t be beaten - yet!

APART from a few loose ends to tie up, the curtain has come down on the Direct Telecom Pool League 2014/15 season.

Gaffers A have taken the Division One title by eight points and remain unbeaten throughout after overcoming their final hurdle - an away game against Palms B. The champions, showing no sign of nerves, quickly settled into their rhythm and the blacks started dropping in. Palms B have proved tough opponents for many teams this season, but they couldn’t pull off what would have been their best result. Gaffers A crossed the line in confident style … and the celebrations started! Hammers A relinquished their crown and had to settle for the runners-up spot, but the race for third was still wide open and it came down to a shoot-out between Inn The Pink A and The Phoenix. The home team have made fast starts their signature, but this week they just couldn’t shake their opponents, with each game being close and both sets of players contributing frames. After the first eight

games there was nothing to separate them, but Phoenix started the last section strongest, with Kev and Harry giving them a 6-4 lead. Rick then pulled one back and a draw would have been good enough for the Pink Boys. But Phoenix wanted to make sure, and when Steve beat Wilf to give them victory, their third place was secured. Even with a game in hand, Inn The Pink couldn’t overtake them. There was also a battle going on for fifth place between Phoenix Potters and Treehouse A. It was another really close match, with neither side wanting to give anything away. A draw was not good enough for the Potters, who needed a win. But they just couldn’t get the breakthrough they needed. Treehouse kept their nerve and managed to win the frames needed to close the game out and take fifth spot. Potters are now sixth, but they could be pushed a step lower because Waterfall Rebels still have a game to play. The Rebels were in action themselves against Exiles B, knowing that Silencio is always a difficult place to achieve a result. This was another match highlighting just how close this league is, with both

teams matching each other frame for frame. It really was difficult to spot a winner, and it came as no surprise when the match finished level. The Peacocks went into the final game knowing they were wooden spoonists and on their way down to Division Two. But they wanted to go out with a win, and their task was made much simpler when Palms A turned up with just three players after some last-minute withdrawals. However, it didn’t go

2

to plan for the Peacocks, who lost 5-4. But Palms had to concede three games because of their depleted side so, for the record, the score stood at 7-5 to the Peacocks. Elsewhere, Hammers C continued their strong end to the season. A couple of weeks back they were in relegation danger but, after beating Exiles B last week, they made themselves safe. So the pressure was off for their last game, at Terrace Bar B. The home side had nothing left to play for and it showed, as they never really turned up. Terrace were soon 5-1 down and never recovered, leaving the Hammers to celebrate an swift, final-night win. Sporting Jester A, already Division Two champions, finished their season off with another win. They travelled to Valle San Lorenzo to face Tenerife Pool Tables and didn’t take their foot off the gas, because they want-

ed to amass as many points as possible. And they soon made light work of Nick and his team, taking their 21st victory in an excellent first season. Bluebell A are runners-up, a position confirmed last week, while Gaffers B took third spot. They finished their campaign with a straightforward home victory over The Crown, who had picked up some good results recently. I believe both teams will be ones to watch next season. They will both look to strengthen their sides in the close-season with a promotion run in mind. Sporting Jester B haven’t been able to emulate their stablemates, but at least they have finished with a couple of decent results. They hosted Dreamers B, who haven’t had the best of seasons, and, with both teams eager to finish on a high, it was a cagey game with some good pool played by both sides.

Through the early frames it was difficult to separate them, and neither side had cause for complaint when the match was drawn. The final game of the night saw Picasso’s A travel to Treehouse B, who had already “won” the wooden spoon. Treehouse would love to have finished the season with a rare win, but their opponents were just too strong for them and wrapped it up in no time. Next up are the finals of the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup and Plate competitions. The Cup Final sees Gaffers A going for the double against a strong Phoenix side, while Hammers A take on Gaffers B in the Plate. Both games are at The Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf, on Tuesday (2nd June), starting at 8pm. Everybody is welcome to come along and cheer on their favourites. It is bound to be a fantastic night, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
