Boo-boys raise genuine fear of independence
Inside this week...
THE thorny subject of regions gaining independence from Spain is again back in the spotlight. Last week’s Spanish Cup final (Copa del Rey) saw some fierce protests aimed at the King and the Spanish union. Continued on page 3

King protest leads to liberty crakcdown Continued from Front. As a direct result, the Spanish Government plans to “suggest a series of legal changes” to ensure that people who jeer and boo when the national anthem is played are punished. But this move has led to a public outcry over freedom of liberty and speech. The Government’s ruling conservative party, Popular Party (PP), saw red when the Spanish anthem was booed in the presence of King Felipe VI before the start of Saturday’s match between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao. Barcelona, in their Nou Camp Stadium, beat Bilbao 3-1 in the first Copa final presided over by Felipe as monarch. The anti-Spanish protest was widely anticipated. Athletic’s fans want their Basque region to be independent, and there has been a strong separatist movement for decades. Matches between them and Barca have seen similar incidents before, but this one could be the tipping point. Francisco Martínez, Secretary of State for Security, described the booing and whistling as “extremely serious”. One of the lines of investigation will be into the Catalan nationalist organisations, which signed a document entitled “Manifesto for the booing of the Spanish anthem and [King] Fe-
lipe of Bourbon” before the game. It is believed that they also handed out whistles to some Barca fans on the route to the stadium. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s office issued a statement condemning “attacks against symbols that represent all Spaniards”, saying that “intolerance is always reprehensible” and that it should not be allowed to “jeopardise our co-existence”. The statement also said that Spain’s commission against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in
sport would meet to study whether sanctions should be applied. And the PP is determined to go further than simply condemn the anti-Spanish sentiment, pouring from the Nou Camp stands. In fact, ministers want to ensure that such actions do not go unpunished in future. “It was an event that offended us - an insult and a horror,” said PP spokesman Carlos Floriano, while Socialist leader Pedro Sánchez phoned King Felipe to express his solidarity. But Catalan regional premier Artur Mas, who
led the pro-sovereignty effort that ended with an informal referendum on independence last November, played down the incident. “I have been at other King’s Cup finals, for instance the one these same teams played in Valencia, and there was also jeering,” he said. “If the Spanish Government insists on issuing threats and being ridiculous, the only thing it will achieve is for people to feel like booing even more.” Mas is no angel and his appearance before the match alongside the King surprised many people. In fact, he could be seen giving a wry little smile as the booing was taking place. He denies this. Meanwhile, the Basque Government said it would be wrong to fine both clubs, and questioned Madrid’s decision to take the issue up with the national Anti-violence Committee. It said in a statement: “It makes no sense to want to fine the clubs for a decision made by their fans, either to express criticism over the political situation or because much of society has taken up a habit
that is incompatible with respect for the institutions at public, social demonstrations.” Carlos Floriano, the PP spokesman, said his party was analysing legislation in countries where attacking national symbols is a crime, with an eye to introducing similar laws in Spain. Yet the PP is aware that this political term is coming to an end, and that no legal reform could make any headway before parliament is dissolved in late September to prepare for November’s general elections. Floriano was unable to say exactly what type of changes might be under consideration. But he added: “That type of demonstration has no place in a country ruled by freedom of expression.” The PP disagrees with a High Court ruling which found that similar booing at the 2009 King’s Cup final between Barcelona and Real Madrid was acceptable in a country with freedom of expression. On that occasion, most of Spain didn’t hear the protest as the
broadcaster edited out the booing for King Juan Carlos, still on the throne then. The senior producer was subsequently fired. This controversy comes at a time when the King’s popularity is at all-time high. He is seen to have reconnected with the people following a series of PR gaffes and declining popularity by his father, who subsequently abdicated. And the week got worse for the King when the El Economista newspaper said his 16-year-old nephew, Don Froilan, racially abused a member of staff at a Madrid theme park. They claim Froilan said “I’m fourth in line to the Spanish throne,” after he was told he couldn’t jump the queue. It’s alleged that he also told the worker: “You shut up, you f***ing chino.” The immature young prince has “previous”. In 2014 he was booted out of school after twice failing key exams. This was two years after he was hospitalised after shooting himself in the foot during a hunting trip, when the the minimum legal age to use firearms in Spain is 14.

World Ocean Day Celebrated
They’ve nearly cracked it!
THE last few stages of the southern section of the Island ring road should soon be finished. The section between Santiago del Teide and Vera Erques has been particularly troublesome, but the remaining work is now finished. “We had to close one of the lanes as cracks were found in March,” said José Luis Delgado, transport ministries press officer. “We did a study on the cause of the problem and then did repairs. The cracks have not appeared again.” This week, the last meeting for monitoring work on the ring road was held by officials of the Ministry of Public Works and insular mem-
bers’ Roads committee. They were brought up to date on the progress, and it is understood that the opening of the remainder of the project, up to the town of Armeñime, will be on 1st July. “There is still some work to do, especially on the important part relating to some concrete slabs, and there is just one month to go.” added Delgado. Work on the Rambla of Guia de Isora, which connects areas in that location, was “a little behind”, said Delgado. Tenerife Cabildo gave the project the necessary 1.2m-euro cash injection, but work has not yet begun.
Mortgages on the slide To celebrate World Environment Day (Today), Loro Parque Foundation has made available a suggestion box for the public so they can write down their “Promises to the Ocean”.
The idea is for them to deposit in the box
all the positive things that are already being carried out, or the ones people commit to start doing in order to leave our oceans in a perfect state of health and consequently a healthy environment for everyone. On the occasion of World Ocean Day (8th of June), Loro Parque Foundation carried out a campaign to raise awareness about the problem being caused by plastic bags
in the ocean. More than 75% of waste found in the sea consists of single-use plastic bags which end up floating around in the ocean, causing the death of many animal species throughout the world. Deaths can be caused by intake, toxicity, suffocation or entrapment. In order to raise awareness, Loro Parque Fundación is encouraging visitors to write on a paper
bag the day they start using it so they can see for themselves the time span of this bag before it is thrown out. Around 150 people, including visitors and school groups, have participated in these activities already. The schools that have made their “Promises to the Ocean” are the Miraflor de Teror of Gran Canaria School and the Enrique González Martín School from Icod de los Vinos.
MARCH saw a decrease in the number of mortgages being approved in the archipelago, with 14.6% fewer completions compared with the same month last year.
And that is a worry because there were 19,7% more mortgages okayed, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Experts believe this is down to a stagnant property market in the Canary Islands and the fact that potential buyers do not have the required deposit. Also, since there are lots of options, buyers could be taking their time deciding which property they want to buy. The average sum borrowed for a mortgage nationally was 127.439 euros in March, which was 5.4% lower than the same month in 2014.
PHEW! What Health centres ‘so unhealthy’ a scorcher VERY warm! That’s how the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) described the last month. May was roasting, both on the Islands and the mainland, and a few records were broken. Santa Cruz had a monthly high of 36.2 degrees, a new May record, while Lanzarote marked the highest-ever May temperature in Spain at 42.6 degrees Celsius on the 13th at the airport. The national average was 19 degrees, which was 2.4 degrees above the monthly average, and this the secondwarmest month of May since 1961. According to AEMET: “May was extremely
warm throughout the southern half of Spain, and was very warm in the rest of Spain. “Temperatures were well above normal, to the point of being ‘extraordinarily high’, especially in the Canary Islands and Valencia.” And there was hardly any rainfall. It was the first May since 1947 that it didn’t rain a drop in central mainland, Andalucia, the Balearic Islands and a third of the eastern Iberian Peninsula. Unfortunately for some, AEMET believes the early summer heatwave could be the trigger for a fierce summer of high temperatures and low rainfall.
HEALTH facilities in Tenerife are way below the required standard, according to a new report.
There are health centres with no ramps, counters too high, bathrooms not fully adapted, lack of signage and specific assistance ... This is the everyday scenario, say associations and disability organisations on the Island, who claim that 90% of health facilities (health centres, specialty clinics and hospitals) violate the Accessibility Act. The worst cases are in the centre of Taganana, which has no access for the disabled. The workers themselves have
contacted both the Cabildo and the Canary Health Service (SCS) to complain about the situation, but have not yet received a response. There is something similar with the health centre in Barranco Grande, in Santa Cruz, which has not lowered the sidewalk access to the facility and has no adapted bathroom. These are not isolated
examples because there are at least a dozen others in the North and the South, but despite being reported, inot of these problems have been solved. “The new outpatient building of HUC, for example, has no ramp at the emergency exit,” said Ana Mengíbar, President of ‘Queremos Movernos’, who stressed: “In the corri-
dors, there no bars for the elderly, and people with problems with mobility and groups of deaf and blind people have serious problems being addressed properly, because there is no specific signage or assistance. “Every day, we get incidents of all kinds by problems in health centres and hospitals.” And Mengíbar believes that caring for people with disabilities “is not fulfilled under the law in practically all the Canary Islands’ health centres”. She added: “The time has now come for the Canaries to overcome these obstacles, and I trust that the new government is aware of a problem that affects many people.”

New workers’ intake adds up to a record SPAIN enjoyed a record number of fresh workers entering the Social Security system in May - a 1.25% increase of 213,015 - which pushed up the average to 17,221,310.
It was the largest increase in a month ever, except for May,
June and July 2005, when there were regularisations of the immigrant population in Spain. Also, in year-on-year terms, 592,937 contributors entered the system (up 3.57%), which was more than twice the 261,361 total in May last year (up 1.60%). There has not been such a large influx of people in
work since July 2006 (684,562). Tomás Burgos, State Secretary for Social Security, said: “What is really important is that every day, there are more people in work who are contributing to the system. We have had 16 months of year-on year positive growth.” He added:
“This is a reality that tells us that month by month, the goal that jobs should be available to all who are looking for them is growing closer.” The number of contributors has grown again for the third month in all autonomous regions, under the key regimes and in the most representative sectors both
under the general regime and the self-employed regime. The seasonally-adjusted figures support the increase in contributors (+57,721) - a figure which has grown for 22 straight months. Affiliation under the General Regime grew by 195,880 in April (1.42%) for an average of 13,987,730. The exceptional sectors are the hotel and catering industry, with 65,563 new contributors; administrative activities and ancillary services, up 23,096; trade, with 19,726 new contributors; construction, at 14,172; and manufacturing industry, at 13,969. The Special Regime for Agricultural Workers posted an increase of 26,194 (3.42%) to 792,124. And the Special Regime for Domestic Workers grew by 846 contributors (0.20%) to 433,11. The Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers
has 3,168,371 contributors, following a 16,778 (0.53%) improvement. The number of people registered under the Regime for Seamen increased by 385 (0.63%) to 61,380. And finally, the Regime for Coal Workers comprised an average of 3,830 contributors, following a reduction of 29 (-0.76%). In year-on-year terms, the rate increased by 3.57%, which equates to 592,937 more jobs in the system. The majority of this growth corresponds to the General Regime, with 525,586 more jobs than last year (3.90%). The rate rose by 2.20% under the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers, which translates to an increase of 68,139 when compared with the same month in 2014. But the Regime for Seamen posted a decrease of 0.62% (-385). The numbers rose in all autonomous regions and all the provinces.

Nightclub’s nightmares! FAÑABE’S Achamán nightclub is one of the most successful in the South of Tenerife, but there has been a sharp rise in crimes outside the venue this year. Police are concerned about the increasing thefts and violent attacks in the early hours. And they are seeing more and more problems at around five or six in the morning, when the establishment is closed. The problem has reached such a level that the business owners are demanding the National Police strengthen its presence there during the hours when there are usually more problems. Last weekend, the National Police arrested two young Colombians who attacked another man on his way home after a night out. On another recent occasion, a 22-year-old man was attacked by a gang of four to five men for no apparent reason. And there have been some very serious assaults. A young woman suffered a skull fracture, which led to an aluminium plate being inserted in her head after another random attack. Police have also revealed a separate incident in which a victim lost five teeth following a brutal attack.
Boost for jobless numbers THERE is good news in the job section as unemployment continues to slide. The number of jobless people in the Canary Islands at the end of May is officially 251,941. That’s a decrease of 22,471 compared with May 2014, and it translates to an annual fall of 8,19%, which was confirmed by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. As for the monthly data, the archipelago’s unemployment figures dropped by 2,075 in May from the previous month. By provinces, Santa Cruz fell 9.08%, while there was a 7,4% decrease in Las Palmas. It means the number of unemployed in the province of Las Palmas is 135,131, and 116,810 in Santa Cruz.

Gibraltar Governor resigns
THE Governor of Gibraltar has quit over tensions with the Foreign Office about the way Britain is dealing with Spanish aggression against the Rock.
Lieutenant General Sir James Dutton took the unprecedented step of stepping down from his role as Her Majesty’s Governor and Commander in Chief of the British overseas territory. The move came less than two years after he left a lucrative career to take up the position. His tenure has seen the ramping-up of Spanish aggression against Gibraltar, with illegal border controls causing havoc on the tiny territory, and an increase in illegal maritime incursions - as many as 245 over a twomonth period in 2014. Sources close to Sir James who, as a Royal Marine, became secondin-command of Nato forces in Afghanistan, said he felt he had been “sold a duff” after increasing friction with the Foreign Office made it clear the role would just be ceremonial. While he had been unhappy for some time, it was only after the Conservative Party’s election victory earlier this month, and the decision to keep Europe Minister David Lidington in post, that, it is understood, he
took the decision to go. In his resignation speech, Sir James said the job was “more representational and ceremonial than I had expected”. His shock announcement left the Foreign Office scrambling to find a suitable replacement before September, when he departs. However, one close source said: “When he was invited to become Governor, he assumed it was because of his military career. “He was very much of a mind that the Royal Navy’s presence should be increased in Gibraltar, and that Gibraltar’s reaction to Spanish incursions should be more robust. “In the event, he was met with increasing frustration by the way the Foreign Office dealt with the Spanish question.” Other sources suggested that he faced mounting friction with Alison MacMillan, formerly Gibraltar’s deputy Governor who now heads the Foreign Office’s Gibraltar desk. His 37-year-career with the Royal Marines saw Sir James elevated to Deputy Commander of the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in 2008, before he left the service in 2010 to join the engineering conglomerate Bechtel as principle Vice-President. He was responsible for overseeing a complete overhauling of Gabon’s
infrastructure and had settled his family in the West African nation before “getting the call” to become Governor of Gibraltar. “Jim is one of those rare chaps who managed to follow a highly-successful military career with an equally-successful civilian one,” said a friend. “He gave it all up - and it was a lot to give up for Gibraltar, because he was led to believe that he could make a difference. He assumed his military career was the reason he was wanted. Instead, what he got was pomp but no real power.” He is not the only Gibraltar Governor to have expressed concerns over FCO policy. Last week, Vice Admiral Sir Adrian Johns, Sir James’s predecessor, described the job as “trying to walk a tightrope between shark-infested waters on one side and a minefield on the other.” Addressing the prestigious Friends of Gibraltar group in London, he said the role in Gibraltar was special because the Gov-
ernor is also given special responsibility for external affairs, defence and internal security. “The Governor is not, as some would like to think, the FCO’s agent in Gibraltar,” he said. “He is, as the Queen’s representative, constitutionally the senior officer of Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar, with a role clearly defined by the constitution. So I was quite clear that I represented Her Majesty, and not Her Majesty’s Government.” Sir Adrian said the Governor’s role also meant influencing “the formulation of UK policy by representing the interests of Gibraltar to the UK.” He added: “Developing policy in a London office, 1,000 miles away from Gibraltar, needs a constant dose of reality and independent judgement from the coal face. “In spite of modern methods of communication, that 1,000-mile gap can sometimes seem very wide.” In January, Andrew Rosindell MP, former chair of
the British overseers’ territories’ all-Parliamentary group, said Gibraltar was being sacrificed as a “pawn” by a Government intent on appeasing Spain to secure its EU reform agenda. Mr. Rosindell added last week: “I am deeply disturbed at what increasingly looks like a policy by the FCO of appeasement to Spain. They talk tough in public, but, when it comes to it, actions are weak. The decision to keep David Lidington in place as Europe Minister seems to suggest this will continue.” “I am not the only MP who feels Gibraltar is being sacrificed over the Government desire for EU reform. But appeasing Spain has only added fuel to its fire. What’s needed is for the door to be shut firmly in Spain’s face. “It is essential that the next Governor is also a military man, and not someone from the Foreign office. At least military Governors try to stand up to the FCO. “This seemed unlikely, however, as the Foreign Office published a job vacancy for Sir James’ replacement.” In a change from the past, the advert placed the desire for a senior civil servant above that of a former senior military officer, and highlighted the need to “devote considerable time to the ceremonial, representational and social aspects of the role”.

BLATTER PATTER
WHO said this? “As long as you’ve got serious investors who wish to put money into football, I applaud. It proves that football is attractive.”
Or this gem? “Gay fans in Qatar should refrain from any sexual activities.” Or this? “FIFA stands for discipline, respect, fair-play, not just on the field of play but in our society as well.” And if you need one more clue: “The source of wealth is from individuals with little or no history of interest in the game, who have happened upon football as a means of serving some hidden agenda.” The biggest scandal surrounding the house of cards that is FIFA and Sepp Blatter is that people are surprised there is a scandal. We all knew Ricky Martin was gay, Bill Clinton had sexual relations with his intern and Beyonce was going to leave Destinys Child.
Passengers were not given
The only shock is that Blatter didn’t go all Richard Nixon on us. On an almost hourly basis, the world has been dropping its jaw at some of the revelations. We knew FIFA was rotten, but even so... The French bought the World Cup in 1998? The Republic of Ireland FA kept quiet and didn’t challenge their dumping out by France (again) in the World Cup by Thierry Henry’s handball after accepting five million dollars hush money? What next? Did they get Pickles whacked after finding the old World Cup in 1966? Maybe they paid off the ECB to drop Kevin Pietersen, or bought the SNP vote in the General Election? Nothing would surprise me! There is a real case for FIFA to be disbanded and a new world governing body put in place. How can we ever trust them again? As Calpurnius said: “Fiat justitia ruat caelum”, which means, “Let justice be done though the heavens fall.”

the option of taking luggage in and out of Adolfo Suarez BarajasMadrid airport for the fourth day in a row. They have been allowed to bring handluggage only with them, although Ryanair has agreed to move travellers to a different airport or date, without charge. But space on the overhead bins is already at a premium on Ryanair flights which are at or near capacity. That’s b e -
cause many passengers opt for hand-luggage only to avoid paying checked-in baggage fees. Officials at the budget airline have been working “around the clock” to cancel what they term an “illegal strike”. The handlers’ union, CTA, claims the workers are on strike because Ryanair is believed to be planning pay cuts of 30%, as well as concerns about shift changes, annual leave and safety equipment. The union also said workers
had walked off the job because of the “working conditions, abuse and threats” to which they had been subjected. A Ryanair spokesman said: “All flights to and from Madrid are running as normal, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.” The Unions have accused Ryanair of refusing to negotiate on salaries, but the spokesman said: “Ryanair complies fully with all EU and Spanish employment law, and with the Spanish Convenio.” He added: “Our lawyers have lodged injunctions with the Labour Court, the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Transport against this illegal strike action.”
Spanish diet hardly suitable THE much-heralded Spanish diet is not all that it appears to be because it’s making people ill!
Some 70% of people in Spain do not eat the five recommended meals by experts, and 90% do not eat breakfast, or just pick at it. A new survey reveals that a mid-morning snack and dinner is the meal skipped by most Spaniards. And 48% of those not eating anything at mid-
morning say it’s because they’re not in the habit of doing so, 35% say it’s because they are not hungry and 16% because they do not have time. As for an evening meal, the excuses are similar, with 52% saying they do
not have tea because it’s not a habit, and 39% because they are not hungry. Also, 83% of Spaniards are not adequately prepared to go to sleep, and mobile devices are to blame. Sustained usage before going to bed
can cause sleep problems. And even though they have the culture, most Spaniards are not drinking enough fluids - 73% do not have the recommended daily intake of eight glasses of water.

Charles Kennedy, a man for all reasons T R I B U T E S poured in for the former Liberal Democrat Party leader Charles Kennedy, who died suddenly at his home in Fort William at the age of 55 last weekend.
His family said they were devastated to lose a “fine man and loving father”, while David Cameron, Nick Clegg, former Lib-Dem leader Paddy Ashdown and Nicola Sturgeon all spoke highly of the colourful politician. Kennedy, who led his party from 1999 to 2006, lost his seat last month. No cause of death has been given, but police said it was not suspicious. He drove the party to its best-ever election result in 2005 on the back of his opposition to the Iraq War two years earlier. In fact, he will go down as the most successful Liberal Democrat leader in the party’s history. But he resigned early in 2006 after revealing that he had been receiving treatment for a longstanding alcohol problem. Mr Clegg, who steps down as Lib Dem as leader next month, said that on a good day, Mr Kennedy had “more political talent in his little finger than the rest of us put together”. He added: “Charles devoted his life to public service, yet he had an unusual gift for speaking about politics with humour and humility, which touched people well beyond the world of politics. “He was one of the most gentle and unflappable politicians I have ever known, yet he was immensely courageous, too, not least when he spoke for the country against the invasion of Iraq.” Kennedy’s family said in a statement: “It is with great sadness, and an enormous sense of shock, that we an-
nounce the death of Charles Kennedy. “We are obviously devastated at the loss. Charles was a fine man, a talented politician, and a loving father to his young son.” A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police officers attended an address at Fort William on Monday, 1st June to reports of the sudden death of a 55-year-old man. Police were notified by ambulance service personnel. There are no suspicious circumstances.” Kennedy was one of the most influential politicians of his generation, carving out a distinctive position for his party on the left of British politics and, perhaps most significantly, ensured his party was at the forefront of opposition to the Iraq War. He also brought a different style of politics to Westminster; more informal; relaxed and outgoing; generous to opponents and warm to friends. He was a politician as much at ease in a TV studio as in the Chamber, and he struck a chord with the public in an age when politicians were more reserved and removed. He sought to fashion
a different way of doing politics. But Kennedy, never the most organised of MPs, found the business of leadership more onerous. And that, coupled with his drinking problems, fuelled disquiet within the Parliamentary party which, eventually, led to him being toppled. His political career began in the Social Democratic Party, and he became the youngest MP of the time at the age of 23 when he won the Ross, Cromarty and Skye seat in 1983. In his early days, Kennedy was Social Democratic Party spokesman on Social Security, Scotland and Health. And when most of his party merged with the Liberals to form the Lib Dems in 1988, he continued to hold a series of front-bench posts. He took over the LibDem leadership from Ashdown in 1999 and began appearing as a regular guest on the satirical news programme Have I Got News for You. During the Nineties, Kennedy built up his profile through a series of TV appearances, earning him the nickname “Chatshow Charlie”, which he hated. But he maintained a
lower profile after his resignation. He did not play any role in the coalition government, having voted against his party’s decision to enter an alliance with the Conservatives. Political friends and rivals rallied to compliment the most popular of men. Prime Minister David Cameron said he was “deeply saddened” by the news, tweeting: “He was a talented politician who has died too young. My thoughts are with his family.” Acting Labour leader
Harriet Harman said his death was a huge loss, describing Mr Kennedy as “a delightful person with a great intellect”. Tony Blair, who clashed with Kennedy over the former Labour Prime Minister’s decision to take the UK to war in Iraq, said he had the greatest of respect for a man who had entered Parliament at the same time as him, in 1983. “Charles’s death is an absolute tragedy,” Blair added. “He was, throughout his time, a lovely, genuine and
deeply-committed public servant.” Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “Sad beyond words to hear the news about Charlie Kennedy. A lovely man and one of the most talented politicians of his time. Gone too soon.” Lord Ashdown told the BBC that Mr Kennedy “had his demons we all have our demons - but on form and when he was on-song, Charles was the best of all of us”. “He was, I think, a person who maybe characterised a different and more welcome political age, when politicians generally spoke the language of ordinary people and stuck to the things they believed in … which is why he was so popular.” And former Lib Dem MP Vince Cable paid tribute to Mr Kennedy’s “shrewd political judgement” and “political courage under attack”. Charles Kennedy’s 2002 marriage to Camelot public relations executive Sarah Gurling was seen by many in the party as a sign that he was settling down. And the birth of his son in 2005 was viewed as a further sign that the hard-partying Kennedy - one commentator dubbed him “Jock the Lad” - was being transformed into a family man.
Islas ex-chief fighting back FORMER Islas Airways President Miguel Concepción has denied over-billing airline tickets, despite this week’s judgement from the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM).
The CD Tenerife chairman lost a case which ruled that his company
knowingly overcharged the government for “local residents” flight repayments. Concepción said: “I will take the case to the Supreme Court, where I hope that justice will be done and the court rectifies the mistake and states that we are right.” The statement accused Islas Airways airline of over-billing between 2007 and 2011 to justify a residence refund, amounting to about 7.5 million euros.
This case originates from a complaint against Binter Canarias in 2011 by Islas, when Concepción claimed: “Binter has an unfair monopoly. It is frankly difficult to break through against Binter.” He added: “It will be very difficult for the airline to resume activity again because Civil Aviation took away all the permits by placing us in bankruptcy.” Concepción was right. Islas was liquidated!

And from Tuesday (9th June), a range of penalties could see people fined from 300 euros to 3,000 euros. The beaches, including El Cabezo, El Medano, Leocadio Machado, Jaquita, Los Abrigos and La Tejita, will see laws that were passed in March come into play. Fines will be dished out for the overuse or noise pollution from mobile devices
and musical instruments; anti-social behaviour; the misuse of water from public toilets;,camping in areas not permitted; making bonfires or barbecues outside of allowed areas and times: antisocial sporting activity, and public fouling. The unsanctioned disposal of materials or waste, which may cause pollution or risk of accidents in the sand or in the sea, along with animal fouling, is also banned - and the penalties could be severe.

Spanish stars helping to push kidney campaign HOSPITALS in the Canaries last year conducted 108 kidney transplants - 16 from living donors - and the total number of donors was 71.
The data was released by the Association of Tenerife Kidney Patients (ERTE) for the campaign ‘Una gran noticia para todos’ (A great news for all), which was launched on Wednesday as part of International Day of Organ and Tissue Donors. Spain has been a leading nation in donation and transplantation, and its doctors are among the world’s best.
Spanish celebrities Emma Garcia, Joaquin Prat and Vicente Vallés are taking part in the campaign, inviting TV viewers to take the step to become a donor - and also carry a card that accredits them as such. “We want the campaign this year to help the number of organ donations continue in the same upward line that it has so far,” says Avelino Grill, manager of ERTE. “It is vitally important that the message reaches the whole society.” For clinical issues, just 20% of kidney patients can be transplanted, which means that most have dialysis as the only optional treatment. This makes prevention and early detection a vital
key to reducing the number of cases. Curiously, 10% of people do not know if they have kidney failure, but they may reduce the risk of developing this disease with healthy habits, such as adequate water intake, controlling blood pressure, glucose in the blood, prevent overweight and exercise. According to the Spanish Society of Nephrology (SEN) d a t a , around 5 2 , 0 0 0 people suffer from
advanced chronic renal disease. More than half live with a transplanted kidney and the rest are on dialysis. In addition, more than 5,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.
Big-spending Canaries PUBLIC spending is growing, and the Canary Islands Government will undertake more projects in 2015 than in any year this Millennium. In the first four months of the year, a total of over 108 million euros has been spent on public projects - 11 times more than in the first quarter of 2014. In the whole of Spain, the autonomous communities have already sanctioned 1.3 billion
euros in the first four months of the year, which is double the sum spent last year. The Canary Islands has, in fact, seen the biggest percentage of growth in the public sector, just ahead of the Basque Country. On the opposite side, Andalusia, is one of two communities which closed the first 2015 quarter with a decrease in public works, specifically 29%, and the other is Murcia.

Cabildo casino was sold fairly ALMOST a year after the General Workers Union (UGT) filed several criminal complaints against Tenerife Cabildo over the sale of the Playa de Las Americas Casino, the courts have spoken.
The complaints, including contentiousadministrative accusations, have been dismissed. And the courts say there is no evidence of any crime. Yet the ruling has been appealed by UGT. Gustavo San-
tana, Secretary General of the union in the Canary Islands, said that late last week, a notification was received of the complaint against the Cabildo. It alleges bribery and disinvestment in the Las Americas Casino, which was owned by the Cabildo. Santana said: “We will appeal because the documentation was forwarded to criminal proceedings from the administrative conflicts. We were not given said documentation, and the preliminary investigations have not been implemented. This is a crystal-clear legal
point.” The Cabildo sold the casino in early May 2014 for 20.8 million euros. There was a set of conditions in the sale, including the retention of its workforce. Initially, there were three bids, from the Orenes Group; Oasis Paradise Hotel and Barcelo Hotels Canarios. After the sale, the plan was to sell the Cabildo’s other two casinos, in Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz. But the UGT’s legal challenges have forced a delay, and could even lead to the project being scrapped.
Iglesias loses tussle with drone camera SPANISH superstar Enrique Iglesias injured two fingers while attempting to grab a drone camera during a concert in Mexico on Saturday.
The drone is used to get crowd shots during his concerts and a representative for the singer wrote on Instagram: “Something went wrong and he had an ac-
cident.” Enrique carried on after the accident before flying to Los Angeles to see a specialist. Photos posted on social media after his show, at the Plaza de Toros de Playas in Tijuana, appeared to show him with a bandaged right hand and a bloodied white T-shirt. His press agent, Joe Bonilla, said Enrique son of legendary Spanish performer Julio “decided to go on and continued playing for 30 minutes while the
bleeding continued throughout the show”. The 40-year-old was then “rushed to the airport, where an ambulance met him. He was then put on a plane to LA to see a specialist.” Enrique, one of Latin music’s biggest stars, recently took home nine prizes from the Billboard Latin Music Awards. The next date in his Sex and Love world tour is scheduled for 3rd July in Mexico City.

Trams on a roll Youngsters are feeling the crunch
THE credit crunch has led to a real-terms loss of money in the pay packet, especially for young workers.
THE successful Santa Cruz tram system, which celebrated its eighth birthday on Tuesday, shows no signs of slowing.
To date, it has carried more than 150 million
passengers, covered 66% of the metropolitan area population and the number of users grew by 2.5% last year. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said: “The tram has been a great success story. Its characteristics are
accessibility, comfort, safety and reliability. It is used by 50,000 people daily and it has become the flag-bearer in the public transport system. “It has contributed significantly to improving the environment by eliminating some two
million car journeys annually between Santa Cruz and La Laguna. “And the consequent reduction in CO2 emissions should not be sniffed at.” During these eight years, the tram has made more than a million business trips,
and the vehicles have covered 10.6 million kilometres, the equivalent of travelling back and forth between the Earth and the Moon 28 times. Also, 26 trams each have travelled an average distance of 450,000km.
The average salary in the Canary Islands has depreciated by 22% over the last few years. In 2007 the average wage was 1,022 euros, while that slumped to an eye-watering 800 euros in 2013. In the crucial 30-64 age bracket, the average wage slipped from 1,135 euros to 1,100 euros. This may not seem a massive reduction, but in real terms, the 1,135-euro wage in 2007 would be worth 1,437 euros in 2013. In addition, the average wage for people in the 16-24 age bracket is around 25% lower than in 2007.

Late tax-return workers let off

fees rise STUDENTS from the official language schools (EOI) in the Canaries found an unpleasant surprise on the day their grades were given. Instead of paying 50 euros for their tuition next year, they will have to pay 70 euros - a 40% rise. The Ministry of Education says the increase complies with a parliamentary agreement, approved in June 2012. The national average enrolment payment is 117 euros, which still
5th June - 11th June 2015
means that those in the archipelago are paying far less than students on the mainland. And in 2013, the rates here were the lowest in the country. According to the Government, the rates paid in the Canary Islands even after the price increase, “are still well below the average and are the second-cheapest in the Spanish autonomous communities.” Language schools in the Canaries will offer 38,485 places for the next academic year.
PEOPLE who filed tax returns after the 31st January deadline will be excused from paying a £100 fine - if they have a “resasonable” excuse for being late.
The scheme, revealed to the Daily Telegraph via a leaked memo, could help up to 890,000 people. An HMRC spokesman said it wanted to focus more resources “on investigating major taxavoidance and evasion”. The Telegraph report says the internal memo asks tax officials to remit fines without further investigation for those people who could show mitigating circumstances, and who appealed against the fine after their tax return was sent in. The Government department is facing a
backlog of almost a million letters, and staff have been taken off callcentre duties to work through the mail, according to the paper. The newspaper quotes the memo as saying: “Our penalty regime is intended to influence customer behaviour, but also be clear and cost-effective, fair and proportionate. “The current way of managing penalties does not meet these objectives, and so we have decided to take a more proportionate approach where a customer has filed their return late, and then appealed against their penalty… “This means that in the vast majority of cases, we will be accepting the customer’s grounds for appeal, and we can cancel the penalty.” The HMRC website lists excuses it regards as acceptable for late payment. These include the death of a family member, a hospital stay, a computer failure, fire, or postal delays. Paul Lewis, who pre-
sents BBC Radio 4’s Money Box programme, said the list was “quite broad” and included reasons officials originally said they were unlikely to accept. “This isn’t an amnesty,” he said. “If you filed late and you’ve got a penalty and haven’t appealed, you will have to pay. But if you appealed, and by now have filled the form in, the chances are, the overwhelming majority will be accepted.” He said the move coincided with a fall in the number of HMRC staff. But the Money Box presenter added that the HMRC does appear to have been successful in its aim of increasing overall receipts by concentrating efforts on “serious tax avoiders”. Labour MP Margaret Hodge, former chair of the Public Accounts Committee, suggested the rules had been brought into “disrepute”. She told the BBC: “Most people will get tax returns in on time, so if HMRC says it is not
going to pursue people who file late, it undermines the system. “It won’t be seen to be fair. People can now simply look down the list of excuses and pick one.” An HMRC spokesman said it had “always accepted” that those with a reasonable excuse should have a penalty waived, and it was now “expediting that process”. A statement added: “We’ve been clear we want to focus more and more of our resources on investigating major tax-avoidance and evasion, rather than penalising ordinary people who are trying to do the right thing. “But no one will be let off the fine unless they’ve now sent in the return and have a good reason for sending it in late. “This is part of our planned approach to penalty appeals, particularly for small businesses and individuals who have sent their tax return in late.”
TV doesn’t click with Canarians THE Spanish love watching TV, but the Canarians are not so fussed. This was the rather odd conclusion to a survey conducted by Kantar Media. It showed that those on the mainland spent an average of five days
(119 hours) in front of the TV during May. This increases to seven days for those out of work, 6.5 days for parttime workers - and “adult couples without children” watch for six days. In contrast, “couples with small children”
watch for 3.7 days only, the “couples with older children” and “one-parent households” watch for four days. By communities, the Valencia area has the longest everyday viewers, while the Canary Islanders spend the least time watching TV.

Legal Matters
By Mariano Zunino Siri
WE are back with more letters and readers’ questions, and I have selected one (although I am replying privately to everyone). Hello Mariano. Briefly, could a legal
5th June - 11th June 2015
Understanding COMMUNITY THE LAW OF OWNERS challenge be made which would overturn voting at successive AGMs which were carried through by votes that should not have been allowed due to Community debts of the owner voters? If so how, would we proceed? Kind regards, C I have referred to this item in previous columns, in which I explained what happens with the agreements adopted in breach of Law of Statutes. The Horizontal
Division Law (according to the modification of 1999) states that the AGM agreements can be refutable before the Courts in the following cases: *when they are contrary to the Law, or to the Statutes of the Community of owners. *When they mean serious prejudice of community interests, to the benefit of one or several proprietors. *When they mean a
serious prejudice for any landlord who has not legal duty of suffering it or they have been determined with abuse of law. It is necessary to bear in mind that owners able to object to the agreements are those ones who saved their vote at the meeting. The absent ones for any reason, and those who have been deprived of their vote unduly, will be legitimated for the objection to these agreements. To “save the vote” is an act by which the
owner specifically says he does not agree with the item in order to revoke it. The action will expire three months after the agreement, unless acts are contrary to the Law or to the Statutes. If so, the action will expire after a year. For absent proprietors, this term will start from the agreement notice. The agreement is enforceable, in spite of the objection (unless the judge decides to suspend them provisionally). It is also important that the meeting has a “quorum”.
The vote of most of the owners, who represent most of the participation quotas, will be enough to make the other agreements valid. In a second formal meeting, the agreements adopted by most of the attending proprietors will be valid, provided that it represent more than half of the value of their participation quotas (no quorum needed). Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer, registered at the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991.

Wondering what to do with all your money?
By Laura Mann
of Blacktower Financial Management (International) Limited.
SO, you finally have some money in the bank and now you´re wondering what to do with it. You´ve bought the new car, had the holiday and generally had a good time, but what to do with the remainder?
While there are many banks out there which will be more than willing to take said cash and invest it for you, giving you an average return of around 2% (if you´re lucky in the current market), there are other products available which yield a much greater return. And, as an expat and Spanish resident, there´s something you should know: *There are plans available which have been tailored specifically for Spanish tax residents and ideal for expats. *You can consolidate wealth in a secure and flexible environment, wherein you can draw an income and/or pass your wealth to future generations in a taxefficient manner. *You can benefit from a very competitive and flexible structure which allows high levels of income, tax, retirement and succession-planning opportunities. In layman´s terms,
while allowing you to take benefits in a way that suits, you can choose when to take an income, and the level of income you need to meet your requirements. Not only that, it´s completely flexible so you can structure income in a variety of ways. For example: an annuity, temporary annuity, lump-sum or even a combination of all three, with NO penalties. Unlike many other products out there, no restrictions are placed on contributions, and ad hoc contributions are also allowed. One of the key advantages of this type of arrangement is that assets can be distributed in line with YOUR wishes in the event of your death, without the need for probate, making Death Duty a thing
of the past. Choosing the right plan allows you, potentially, to pass on wealth without
it costing your loved ones to inherit. Your plan will not become obsolete if you
decide to move between different countries of tax residence, and you can choose to
have your plan denominated in Pounds, Dollars or Euros Laura Mann is Regional Manager Canary Islands at Blacktower Financial Management (International) Ltd. British taxpayers offered cut-price Lloyds’ shares THE British Government’s Treasury has pledged to launch a Lloyds’ share sale to the public in the next 12 months, with further details to follow. Chancellor George Osborne has previously pledged to make some Lloyds shares available to small investors - at a discount to the market price - as part of the share sell-off. The Government also said it would extend its plan to sell off shares in Lloyds to the end of the year. The scheme, which is gradually selling off Lloyds shares to big
institutional investors, was originally set to finish at the end of this month, but it will now be extended until 31st December. The Treasury said the extra six months would help it meet Chancellor Osborne’s promise to sell a further £9bn of Lloyds shares in 201516. The extension of the sale, together with the sale of shares to the public, could mean the bank returning to private hands within a year. The Government has long made it clear that it wants retail investors to have the op-
portunity to buy shares in the bank, evoking memories of big privatisations, such as British Gas’s £3.9bn share sell-off and British Telecom’s £5.6bn sell-off in the Eighties, when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister. In the Election runup, Mr Osborne said retail investors would be able to buy between £250 and £10,000 worth of Lloyds shares, with priority going to those wanting to buy up to £1,000 of shares, to enable as many investors as possible to buy shares. The Government also
announced on Monday that it had sold a further 1% of shares in the bank, taking its stake below 19%. It originally owned a 41% stake after ploughing £20bn into the bank during the 2008 financial crisis. It started selling Lloyds shares in 2013, and the latest sale means it has now raised more than £10.5bn. Mr Osborne said the share sell-off so far had been a “huge success” and added that extending the programme would help it to return more money to the taxpayer and help reduce the national debt.

The Enforcers
Don't Miss... Tuesday 9th June, ITV1, 21.00 “It takes a certain type of person to stand there and be shouted at. Once I had a bottle of urine poured over me, people spitting at you, threatening you. Not everybody could do that. A lot of people would be intimidated and not want to do that. But that’s what I enjoy doing.” - Shergroup enforcement officer Scott Hines This action-packed new two-part documentary for ITV closely follows the work of High Court enforcement officers as they try to reclaim debts from those who haven’t paid up, and evict people who are illegally occupying properties. The Enforcers provides a vivid insight into the work of the men and women who are called in at the end of a legal battle as agents of the court to ensure a judge’s order is met. It features scenes from the evictions of travellers and squatters from land and properties, the repossession of rental homes, the removal of cars and even a restaurant kitchen after debtors fail to pay what they owe. The programme also looks into the personal fallout of the recent financial crisis, as a City worker is evicted from his property after being made redundant. In the first episode, the enforcers are called in to evict dozens of squatters from a multi-million pound office block in the City of London. A High Court judge has given officers the powers to enter the building and take possession on behalf of the owner, but the squatters aren’t happy at being forced out. Debra Molna says: “We are homeless now. Maybe we don’t have the rights to do that but why is property in the middle of the town completely empty?” Enforcement officer Scott Hines explains that he understands their situation but doesn’t sympathise. He says: “I believe that nowadays, that if you don’t want to be homeless, then you really shouldn’t be homeless. Like people can find jobs if they want to but a lot of these people don’t want to find jobs because they like this lifestyle. It’s a choice. I don’t understand how you’d want to live like this, but people do.” Sue Kettley is on her way to Wolverhampton to recover a debt of more than £2,000 owed to a customer who apparently bought goods online from a car repair business, which never arrived. The owner denies it has anything to do with him. After she arrives, staff threaten to set dogs on her and her colleague has a door kicked into his face. One of the staff is arrested for assault but later released without charge. Sue says: “If you let it frighten you, you wouldn’t do it. If you let it get to you, you wouldn’t do it. Although Darren did get injured, which is unfortunate.” In Dagenham, officers break into a restaurant and seize a £75,000 kitchen, which it is claimed the owners failed to pay for, despite protests that they are mistaken. Scott explains the motivation of the kitchen supplier who took legal action in the first place. He says: “This stuff is four years old, he isn’t actually going to get a penny out of this. The only reason he’s doing it is because he wants to teach the guy a lesson. He fitted it all out, and never got a penny, so he’s taking it all back.” The restaurant owner says he has taken over the restaurant from the man who failed to pay. He says: “I have the legal documents that I am the new occupier. They should have given me time to go to court or sort out the matter. They shouldn’t just close down my restaurant.”

Kate Humble: Living with Nomads
5th June - 11th June 2015
F riday
BBC2, 21:00
Documentary series. Kate Humble travels to Nepal in search of the country’s last community of nomads, the Raute people. Almost all of the Raute population has already settled in Nepal and India - just one group of 140 people remain living as nomads. These hunter-gatherers move camp every few weeks through the steeply wooded hills and mountains, but they face pressure to settle from Nepal’s government and hostility from the farmers on whose land they camp. The Raute are famously private, and it proves a difficult task for Kate to get to know them. With perseverance and a rather unlikely rendition of Old MacDonald, Kate is slowly accepted into this proud community. But it’s a demanding and emotional journey as she encounters the hostility that they face from mainstream Nepali society. As she helps them move camp twice, bearing heavy loads up punishingly steep hills, she comes face to face - and almost fist to fist - with the conflicts and contradictions facing Nepal’s last nomads.
Gino’s Italian Escape
ITV1, 20:00
Chef Gino D’Acampo undertakes a culinary journey around his native Italy. In the first episode, he visits the stunning Amalfi Coast and the town of Amalfi itself, a favourite holiday destination during his childhood. The area is world-famous for its lemons, and Gino explores a secluded citrus grove high on the cliffs above the town. In this breathtaking location, Gino whips up a creamy lemon mousse topped with crushed amaretti biscuits using local fruit and the region’s citrus liqueur, limoncello. In search of more tasty Italian ingredients, Gino travels south to an organic buffalo farm. Here he meets cheese experts and tries his hand at crafting mozzarella. As the sun sets, Gino takes his new friends from the lemon grove on a sailing trip. For them he dishes up delicate buffalo mozzarella wrapped in parma ham and rocket, washed down by a delicious cocktail of limoncello and prosecco.

Keira Knightley, Jude Law and Aaron Taylor-Johnson star in Joe Wright’s innovative version of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel, adapted for the screen by Tom Stoppard. The narrative, leant a surreal edge by being set almost entirely within an opulent theatre, centres on Anna Karenina, wife of Count Alexei Karenin, a much older diplomat, with whom she has an eightyear-old son. In 1874, Anna travels to Moscow hoping to talk her philandering brother Oblonsky out of his scandalous affair with a maid and into staying faithful to his wife Dolly. But her mission takes an unexpected turn when she meets young cavalry officer Count Vronsky.
The incredible hulk woman. This programme follows a mum of three who has one of the rarest conditions in the world - stiff person syndrome. Triggered by noise, stress, extreme temperature and even food allergies, attacks see Helen stiffen up and become unable to move as her muscles turn to stone and spasm. Helen feels as though her muscles are ripping, tearing and swelling inside her body, but she cannot get the treatment she needs without a firm diagnosis.

F1 Rewind: Senna BBC2, 16.00
Suzi Perry and Murray Walker introduce three defining races in the career of the late Ayrton Senna, a three-time world champion who is regarded by many as the greatest Formula 1 driver in history. At the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix Senna’s title defence was ended in controversial fashion, following a collision with race leader, championship rival and McLaren team-mate, Alain Prost. Senna managed to restart his car and went on to win the race but was later disqualified for using an escape road to rejoin the circuit, handing the title to Prost. Three years later in Monaco Senna gave a masterclass in defensive driving, closing laps to prevent Nigel Mansell from passing him for victory. While at a rain-lashed Donington Park in 1993 the brilliant Brazilian soared from fifth to first on the opening lap to earn one of the last and most memorable victories of his career.

Using newly discovered letters and reports, the programme reveals how Spanish commanders were at loggerheads over their next move in battle. Devastated by his defeat, King Philip II of Spain is left disillusioned by his religious faith, bed-ridden, bitter and sickly. Queen Elizabeth I (played by Anita Dobson) emerges from hiding victorious and delivers a rousing speech at the Tilbury fort, often considered one of the greatest speeches in history. However, as this episode will investigate, Elizabeth disregarded the sailors who won her the battle, with many hundreds dying of starvation and disease as a result of her frugality.

5th June - 11th June 2015
M o nday
BBC1, 21.00
Filmed over the course of a year, The Met: Policing London is a five-part series that follows officers from Britain’s biggest and busiest police service as they deal with life, death, crime and its victims, all across the capital. In 2011, a 29 year-old black man and suspected gang member called Mark Duggan was fatally shot by a firearms officer in Tottenham, when the officer believed Duggan had a gun and that he might use it. The Met’s handling of the situation in the days that followed was called into question and sparked some of the worst riots in London’s history. Now, an inquiry is about to announce whether the killing was lawful or unlawful; the impending verdict is creating anxiety in Scotland Yard and tension on the streets of Tottenham, one of the most racially diverse areas of Britain and home to the Duggan family. Management at Scotland Yard is busy planning around the verdict. Whatever the outcome, they are anxious that it may spark fresh riots. Victor Olisa is one of just five Borough Commanders in the Met from a black or ethnic background and was moved to Tottenham after the riots to try to heal the Met’s relationship with some of the community. When the verdict is announced, his station becomes the focus of community frustrations and the pressure is on Victor to manage the situation, which he does by asking for help from community leaders. In the weeks that follow, tensions between some of London’s black community and the Met are running high. Police think it’s time for a new approach. At the annual Splash street party in Brixton they work with the black community to police the event the way the community wants it policed. But can this approach work when gangs have caused chaos in previous years? And can there ever be a long-term solution to the troubled history of London’s police and some of the city’s black community.

Johnny Kingdom’s Wild Exmoor ITV1, 20.00
In this new factual series shot across the four seasons we join wild man of the moor Johnny Kingdom, as he follows the wildlife and people of his beloved Exmoor. It’s summer the time of year when red deer calves are born and Johnny is determined to film some. But they’re difficult to see because to keep them safe, they’re born in very long grass. Eventually he finds one but only its ears are visible so Johnny decides to return in a few days hoping for a better view. Then it’s off to his land to meet up with old friend and fellow badger fan Bob Sampson. Johnny wants to show him his shots of badgers feeding outside in daylight; a rare sight. Summer is also a busy time on Exmoor for fairs and festivals and Johnny visits one of his favourites the Exford Pony Show, to watch the ‘best antler competition’ and some Exmoor ponies performing in the ring. Then he’s back on the trail of the red deer calves and this time success, Johnny has a great view of several tiny calves and their mothers. Exmoor is one of Britain’s smallest national parks and is celebrating its 60th anniversary. To mark the occasion a competition has been launched to design an Exmoor flag and Johnny is one of the judges. It’s going to be tough – nearly 300 entries which the judges have to narrow down to five finalists. The winner will be chosen by a public vote and announced in the autumn. There’s one more animal that Johnny has been anxious to see this summer -the barn owl. Recent harsh winters have threatened the local population but Johnny is delighted when a farmer tells him about a family living in a derelict barn on his land. Johnny puts a remote camera in place and a few days later is over the moon to see his fantastic shots of four barn owl chicks and their parents.

Richard Ayoade takes on the daily grind of 9 to 5 with some interesting new gadgets. He is shocked to the core by the news that nearly half the working population feel their work-life balance is unbalanced, and sets out to see if there are devices to make things better. The first stop is the coffee shop as he tests a solar briefcase to recharge gadgets, a hand massager to sooth tired fingers, and a portable hammock for your feet. At the office, Richard is joined by comedian Dara O’Briain to investigate a giant interactive touchscreen, a zero gravity desk, and a virtual reality office assistant. Journalist Grace Dent helps look at gadgets designed for exercising in the office. And Gadget Man’s technical support staff try to synthesise the latest in telepresence and programmable robots to allow Richard to complete all his office tasks without leaving his bed.

The information contained herein is strictly embargoed from all press, online and social media use, noncommercial publication, or syndication until Tuesday 2 June 2015. This two-part documentary series narrated by Timothy Spall explores the unique relationship that exists between blind people and their guide dogs, who make such a massive difference to the lives of those who cannot see for themselves. Gaining exclusive access to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, which has been matching visually impaired people to the ideal canine guide for the past 80 years, this film highlights the difference that such loyal animals can make to people’s lives. The programmes also follow one particular litter of pups – the ‘K’ litter – from the moment of their birth, through their training and up to the momentous day when they finally get paired with the blind person they will serve and protect. In the first programme of the series, the pups are taken from the National Breeding Centre where they were born to spend their first year with volunteer foster families across the country. Some foster families such as Tony and Carol – who are caring for their 11th puppy this time round – are old hands, but others such as first timers Jean and Colin each find their puppies something of a handful! We also hear stories from guide dog owners such as Jill, whose guide dog Lucas led her to meet her idol Dolly Parton, and Jason, whose dog Yozi saved his life but now faces a battle to save her own.

The award-winning documentary series returns to ITV for a brand new series, as presenters Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell reunite more family members with their missing loved ones. The fifth series of the hit show promises some of its most heart-wrenching stories yet with many firsts for the show, from a couple searching together for their son, to a mother who tells us how she had to give up her child not once but twice, to a father searching for his daughter. This series takes on some of the most challenging searches so far, tracking down people in countries as diverse as Canada, South Africa, Germany and Croatia. Across six new episodes, Davina and Nicky bring family members together who have been separated for most of their lives. Some have spent years desperately trying to track down their loved ones in vain. Each relative is guided and supported through the emotional process of tracing the family they are so anxious to find. Many of the 12 searches take unpredictable turns, as fathers, mothers, daughters, sons and siblings don’t always get the news they were hoping for. But whilst there are painful truths along the way, the series witnesses how being reunited with long lost family can transform people’s lives. Episode two features two stories of missed opportunities: a mother who, having given up her daughter for fostering, had the chance to have her back again, but chose for her daughter’s sake to give her up for a second time; and a man searching for the father who has missed out on over 40 years of his son’s life.

Napoleon BBC2, 21:30
The first of three documentaries telling the story of Napoleon. With access to a unique archive of Napoleon’s personal letters, many of which have never been published before, historian Andrew Roberts journeys through the history and geography of Europe to bring this story vividly to life as he retraces the footsteps of the legendary leader himself. The films shed new light on Napoleon as an extraordinarily gifted military commander, a mesmeric leader whose private life was, contrary to popular belief, littered with disappointments and betrayals. From lowly Corsican Army officer to first consul of France, this episode charts the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte to leader of the French nation in the late 1790s. It tells of Napoleon’s military triumphs in Italy, Eqypt and against anti-revolutionaries on the streets of Paris, his marriage to Josephine Beauharnais and leadership of the military coup of 1799 that swept him into power.

Tenerife Opera 2015. Ana Bolena Anna Bolena is the first work of Donizetti’s Queens’ Trilogy and is the essence of the dramatic bel canto that the composer would later repeat in Roberto Devereux, María Estuardo and, particularly, Lucia di Lammermoor. Donizetti applied all his talent to the psychological portrayal of his characters in this delightfully melodic piece. The all-star cast features Mariella Devia (one of the greatest bel canto sopranos of the last 40 years) in the leading role, Tenerife’s most international tenor, Celso Albelo, and mezzo-soprano, Alessandra Volpe, who returns to Ópera de Tenerife after her tremendous success last season in Nabucco.

By Jamie Droo IS there a right or wrong in entertainment? It’s a mystery that will probably never be solved, because to entertain is to engage the attention of people for a set period in some art form.
If that means teaching them to fold napkins in the shape of a swan, which is a style of afternoon light entertainment on cruise ships, or engaging them by singing a classic, it all comes under that same heading.
Entertainment
37 CW
Let them all entertain you! However this engagement is achieved, it requires the talent of an individual, or a group of individuals working together. As solo performers, it is ultimately down to just him or her! When it comes to the Tenerife scene, the format seems to work. At most venues there is a compere, who usually begins the evening between 8.30pm-9.30pm. There is then a featured show at either 10pm or 11pm. There’s an abundance of talent touring the Island’s bars and hotels, and their publicity
and reputation is what brings people into the venues. Then one has to consider the host, or the compere. This person has to engage the audience until the presentation of the billed artiste. Through the first couple of hours, the compere’s job is to keep the audience occupied until show time. This is normally done in many ways. Sometimes the host will employ various methods, and a quiz is one way of holding an audience’s attention. But a quiz is only good for the people
who are actually in the venue. It will not draw in passers-by unless they have specifically come to see the billed artiste and have arrived early to secure a seat. But quizzes can be entertaining if delivered correctly. A straight 20 general knowledge questions of, “what is? where is? and what year did?”are okay in any quiz, if it’s a billed form of entertainment. For example, a small bar called Bad Bobs, near The Patch area of Las Americas, does not feature a compere or cabaret. But on “Quiz Nights”, you can’t get
a seat! Owner Deano puts a ton of effort into 50 themed questions, and the quiz lasts for up to 90 minutes. His audience arrive early to ensure they have a seat and a chance of winning the grand prize by simply testing their grey matter while sampling a beverage or two. For me, this is entertainment in its rawest form, yet it has more pull than some showbars, which offer entertainment via a compere and an act. This is ultimately down to Deano, and the effort and research
he puts in to getting it all together every week. And he manages to do it cost-free, apart from the time it takes. The time artistes put into preparing their act is always relevant to how they are received. There are many different artistes on the Island, and most have been doing their job for years. Some are outstanding and others earn a living. This week, I offer you examples of two outstanding acts, who are never without work, yet are in stark contrast to one another.
GEORGE KING: Comedian He is, without doubt, one of the finest comedians I have ever seen. I have worked alongside George in Tenerife and during my time as an entertainer on cruise ships. On the ships, one of the tasks we had to perform was operate the spotlight to follow the artistes on stage, and keep them lit as they performed. I would always volunteer to do this job when George was on board because I also got to see his show - and he is funny to the core. He doesn’t swear, he is not “blue” in any way, but the way he delivers his comedic innuendo is genius. He has worked with a plethora of stars, including Joe Longthorne during his world tour, and has travelled the globe. It would be no exaggeration to say that he has made millions of people laugh over the years. You can see George in various venues here, and, he is still performing regularly on cruise ships. He is, and always will be the best comic I have ever worked with. And to quote the late Bernard Manning: “He´s all right if you like laughing.”
ASH JOLLEY: Compere Ash is an old-school compere who comes from good stock. His father was half of the popular Jolley Brothers comedy duo, who were extremely popular over here throughout the Nineties, when Ash was a youngster. He has become one of the Island’s best comperes, appearing in many venues as host and always engaging his audience. His “off-the-wall” humour is based on ad-libs, working with the people in front of him, and never failing to entertain. He is also an excellent singer and can turn his voice to any song. And he has a couple of party pieces, so if you are ever in an audience watching Ash, ask him to sing Lionel Richie’s Dancing On The Ceiling. The vocals are spot-on, but you simply have to experience the dancing and spontaneous rapping he throws in as well. He really is a talented compere and will never be short of work. One of his regular venues is The Moonlight Bar, in Torviscas, on Friday evenings. Ash has also started to work a few nights as a fun-pub DJ at Yates’s Bar on Starco, where I’m sure he will have an extremely successful summer.

Leo’s Italian & Grill
Feast fit for a lion LEO’S has been open for just a few months but is already making its mark in the popular Passarella food complex, in Los Cristianos.
On entering, you can’t help but feel comfortable in the modern, stylish and bright interior. Outdoor seating is also available. Cai, the owner and manager, was there to greet us and show us to our table before providing a glass of house red each to sip while perusing the varied menu. Although it is advertised as an ‘Italian & Grill’, it’s not just Pasta and Pizza (although they did look amazing), because there is so much more on offer.
For starters, we went for the Focaccia with garlic, tomatoes and a fresh, crispy, rocket salad and stuffed mushrooms. Although the mushrooms were stuffed with a twist not the usual sausage
meat but instead, a tasty seafood mix and topped with melted cheese and a mushroom sauce. For mains, we opted for the Fillet Steak foie gras - one of Cai’s personal recommendations - and the Sole Martini, which was also on the “specials” menu. The fillet steak was as tender as butter, stuffed with tasty foie,
and the sole, topped with prawns and mussels in a cream and dill sauce, was to die for. Both came with options of Canarian potatoes, garlic potatoes or chips, and fresh vegetables or salad. There was also an intriguing range of sauces such as Mexican and Jack Daniels, as well as the traditional mushroom and pepper for your meats.
I was impressed with the range of fish and seafood on the menu because I haven’t seen too many other places in the area with such a selection. After demolishing our food, we had a quick chat with the charismatic Cai. We learned that he had been in the catering industry for over 11 years, and was trained in hospi-
tality marketing in the Puerto Banus hot spot in Marbella. And we can confirm that he has definitely brought some of the Puerto Banus “Celebrity style” to Tenerife. We also had the pleasure of meeting a couple of the other servers, Jose and Malin. The whole team were polite, efficient and friendly ... what more could you ask for? Hang on, desserts, of course! Leo’s had their own home-made range including Tiramisu, Chocolate caramel pudding and Peach meringue. They are open every day from 11am until midnight and currently have a special threecourse lunch-time menu for just 9.95 euros, with various menu choices available.

En Pie
BECAUSE WE’RE ALL WORTH IT...
Fundacion
By Vanessa Vee LITTLE bit of a different one this week. I can´t review my choice because it doesn’t take place until tomorrow (Saturday).
I have agreed to take part in an 8km hike, downhill of course, all in the name of charity. But I have had no previous involvement with this particular organisation, although the name seems to be springing up everywhere. After chatting with the brains behind this forthcoming event, I have now discovered exactly what En Pie Fundacion is all about. The mission of the Foundation En Pie is to support, defend and protect people who are affected by mental health problems, whatever the nationality, and wherever their location in any of the Canary Islands. The multi-talented team is made up of their service users, family members, friends and professionals, all with
the same focus: *To fight against Stigma *To highlight the plight of those affected by mental illness and sensitise the public to their needs *To create quality-oflife projects *To organise events which raise awareness and foster social integration *To provide guardianship to those people with mental health problems who are declared totally or partially incapacitated by law So, in a nutshell, if a judge makes a decision to place someone as totally or partially incapacitated, then rather than transferring that person into a home, for example, En Pie, which translates as “Take a Stand”, will provide guardianship for him or her, as a form of protection. The charity covers illnesses such as Schizophrenia, ADHD and Bi-Polar, for example. The Foundation does not receive any government funding, and relies totally on donations, and organising events which also serve to raise awareness in the community of social inclu-
sion and anti-stigma. Since launching in 2011, the charity has since opened the “Drop in Point” - a place where people and their families can call in and talk to someone on an informal basis about mental health. It also functions as a charity shop. From here, people are signposted to get the help they need, and also receive support. Just try to imagine the isolation from society that a lot of these people go through. The foundation has organised a new challenge, “The Seven Islands Trail, from Santiago del Teide to Los Gigantes”, which takes place tomorrow (Saturday). The participants will enjoy various stops along the way - one for each of the seven, unique Canary Islands -where they will discover their typical customs, food and wine. Once the walkers reach the port of Los Gigantes, there is a live music programme, including yours truly, as well as Tenerife´s local cuisine for the walkers. And, of course, a fundraising raffle, with prizes donated very generously by many local businesses. The beneficiaries of all funds raised will be the En Pie Foundation and the popular Helping Hands charity, who have teamed up for the occasion. The trip will start in the rural park of Teno, in Santiago del Teide, and progress through the picturesque, nature reserve of Chinyero, finishing off in Los Gigantes, overlooking the magnificent cliffs. Everybody is invited to take part to raise funds, or donate a minimum sum of 40 euros (inclusive of everything on the day), to join the challenge alongside some Foundation members, who are affected by mental illnesses. It’s not to late to register, so if you fancy joining us tomorrow, please use one of the following channels: either register online at www.enpie.org , or call 633 764 774.

HOW important is your hair to you? On a scale of one to 10, where do you place your treasured locks? People sometimes tell me they would rather go to the dentist than have their hair done.
They would rather have a night out than touch up those roots, which is fine if that’s how you feel about your hair and what it says to the world. After all, no one stands outside a salon pointing a gun at you to force you in. You visit a salon, I hope, because you care about your hair and what it looks like. Some clients tell me they would rather go without something else than walk around with their hair in a mess, and some even change other appointments and work schedules to fit in a cut and colour. For some, i t ’ s
too much; for others, it’s just part of the routine of looking after their image and feeling good about the way they are. Your hair isn’t like an item of clothing, which you can take off if you don’t like it. It sits there on your head, and it’s up to you whether or not you care for it. The cost of having your haircut is of importance, too. Many salons cut corners and use cheap products to lower their prices, while others offer a reasonable price but force you into spending a small fortune on products you don’t really need. It’s up to you as a client to choose what is best for you … what you are looking for from your stylist and salon. Maybe it’s best to evaluate the price you pay for your hair-do against how happy you are with the results. But scrimping on a few euros can have disastrous results. Leaving your hair in the hands of someone who is only after your money can leave
you unhappy - and your pocket empty! If your hair means something to you, it is an investment. You divide up what you pay over, say, your six-weekly appointments, and it works out at a few euros a week. For what? To look gorgeous every day! But whatever you are wearing, if your hair’s a mess then so are you. We all have different values. Some would rather just tie it up and forget about it, but for those of you who care about your hair, there’s a stylist and a salon waiting to help you do just that. Okay, maybe one time you can’t get to the salon, or you’re a bit stretched for money. But keeping up with your appointments will pay off in the long run. We all have times when we have to pay for something else, rather than indulge ourselves. But there’s one thing for sure: your hair isn’t called your crowning glory for nothing!

Getting a bit saucy! CETTE sauce de haute qualite est un melange des espice orientaux et de vinaigre de malt pur!
By Monica Dyson I WAS an avid reader as a child, but not at the dining table, much to my disgust! Therefore, I was very much restricted to reading the side of the HP sauce bottle while eating.
I’m not sure I actually learnt much French from the information given, but it whiled away many a boring meal-time. The HP company decided that the description in French would add an air of continental refinement to a product that people just plonked on their pies or bacon and egg. It’s not clear whether it worked because I’ve a feeling that today, it is exactly what most people still do! We Brits love our sauces, don’t we? And most of them have been favourites for many years, despite the additions to our cuisine more recently of curry and other sauces, now that we have embraced foreign foods into our diet. The original recipe for
HP Sauce was invented by a Nottingham grocer called Frederick Gibson Garton, who registered the name in 1895. He called it HP after the Houses of Parliament, having heard that a restaurant inside the building had started serving it. He sold the recipe and brand to Edwin Samson Moore, the founder of the Midlands Vinegar Company, who launched HP Sauce in 1903. The rest as they say, is history! For many years, the bottles have featured a picture of the Houses of Parliament. Unfortunately, though, no longer the interesting French reading matter, and I was dismayed to
find out that the sauce is actually manufactured in Holland. You can read that fact on the bottle. It doesn’t actually say it in Dutch, which is a shame. Sauce lovers could have become quite multi-lingual over the years! There was quite an outcry when the production did move abroad in 2006 because it came only weeks after HP launched a campaign to “Save the Proper British Café”, prompting a call to boycott HP products. A British MP brandished a bottle of the sauce at Prime Minister’s Question Time in the House of Commons in protest. It was to no avail, and the factory moved, prompting a “wake” outside by the workers on the day of closure. But it is interesting to note that the sauce became known as “Wilson’s Gravy” in the Sixties and Seventies after Harold Wilson, the Labour Prime Minister. The name arose after his wife, Mary, gave an interview to The Sunday Times in which she said: “If Harold has a fault, it is that he drowns everything in HP Sauce.” The Private Eye magazine calls its parliamentary news section “HP Sauce”. Over the years, there have been different versions of the original sauce with barbeque, steak and even Guinness sauce. There is no evidence that it is drunk straight from the bottle! Easily the most popular sauce of all is Heinz Tomato Ketchup. It’s
everywhere! No matter where or to what farflung places you travel, you can always obtain it in a cafe or restaurant. People travel abroad with bottles of it in their luggage in case they have difficulty in finding some. As if! There are more than 650 million bottles of it sold every year throughout the world. You could always find bottles of both HP Sauce and Heinz Tomato Ketchup on the tables in Sheffield restaurants, particularly when it was Pie Day! This sauce was invented in America by Henry J Heinz, who was from a German-Jewish family in Pittsburg. And so fond of his mother’s horse radish sauce was he that in 1869, he decided to manufacture it. Ten years, later toma-
to ketchup came off the production line and the company never looked back! It has remained largely unchanged, apart from an organic version, and a change in the label as recently as 2009. That’s when the illustration of a gherkin pickle which had adorned the label since the Eighties was replaced with an image of a vine-ripened tomato, accompanied by a new slogan: “Grown not made!” We are all familiar with the Heinz 57 slogan, but in actual fact the company had manufactured 60 products by the time Henry Heinz introduced the number 57 to his ketchup bottles. He thought it was a lucky number, and it continues to be used today. But by far the sauce
most in the affections of Sheffield people is “Hendos”. When my daughter lived in the Middle East, it was a bottle of Henderson’s Relish, together with a box of Yorkshire Tea Bags, that I had to pack whenever I visited her. You probably won’t be familiar with it in Tenerife as it doesn’t seem to have reached other parts of the world yet, despite having been manufactured in South Yorkshire for so long. As much a part of our city as Sheffield cutlery, and somewhat easier to obtain, and with a slogan that states “Made in Sheffield for over 100 years”, there isn’t much to say about Hendos that hasn’t been said many times before. It has celebrity endorsements from many of its famous sons, like David Blunkett, Sean Bean and Richard Hawley, and from the chef, Marco Pierre White. I did read somewhere that Peter Stringfellow, millionaire club-owner and originally from Sheffield, likes it on his bacon and eggs. There were people recently enthusing about its taste on Yorkshire Pudding Day. Yes, you’ve guessed what they had on their puddings! So, forget “Fifty Shades of Grey” ... there are much easier ways to get saucy!
Lifeguards back on parade EL MEDANO’S lifeguard service is up and running again, just a couple of days after it looked as though it would be shut down.
Granadilla de Abona Council acted swiftly to award a new contract following the previous deal, which ended a few days ago, so the lifeguards could be in place before the
summer season starts. Councillor Guacimara González said: “The new contract is currently in the process of being finalised, and we will shortly have it operational. “We are doing everything possible so that the administrative procedures are completed as soon as possible, and our Blue Flag beaches are safe.” The previous contract to supply lifeguards had been allowed to run out, and there
were genuine fears that there would be no help on the beaches. But the Council has now averted that danger. One of the requirements for being awarded a Blue Flag is a fully-manned lifeguard service on beaches for safety reasons. And just two weeks after gaining the honour again, the problem has been resolved and the day-to-day beach surveillance at El Medano will continue.

The children, comprising Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, had great fun erecting the tents in preparation for a sleepover at their Church Hall headquarters in Costa del Silencio. Scout Leader Steve Hardy, who formed the pack with his wife, Leisel, less than a year ago, said: “We would like to

Forget cholesterol, eggs really can give your health a boost
Don’t get too stressed out!
By Val Sainsbury THEY have been blacklisted for many years because, experts stressed, they caused thickening of the arteries, heart disease and strokes. In fact, foods high in cholesterol have been branded a danger to human health since the Seventies - a warning that has long divided the medical establishment. The popular Atkins’ diet, for instance, advocating eggs and butter, etc, proved successful many years ago in the face of major criticism from some quarters, and is still going strong. Now, says a key American report, the science which warned us off eating eggs and other highcholesterol foods such as butter, shellfish, bacon and liver, could have been flawed. The US Department of Agriculture panel says it will almost certainly endorse the new research, which undermines the role dietary cholesterol plays in heart health. A growing number of experts have been arguing that there is no link between high cholesterol in food, and dangerous levels of the fatty substance in the blood. In a move signalling a dramatic change of tune, the US Government is prepared to accept advice to drop cholesterol from its list of “nutrients of concern”. The US Department of Agriculture panel, given the task of overhauling the guidelines every five years, has indicated it will agree to new research that disputes the

role dietary cholesterol plays in heart health. Its Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) will no longer warn people to avoid eggs, shellfish and other cholesterol-laden foods. The U-turn, based on a report by the committee, will undo almost 40 years of public health warnings about eating food laden with cholesterol. Dr Steven Nissen, a US cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, said: “It’s the right decision. We got the dietary guidelines wrong
- they’ve been wrong for decades.” Doctors who have moved away from warnings about cholesterol and saturated fat, are now focusing their concerns about sugar as the biggest dietary threat. London-based cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra, science director of campaign group Action On Sugar, wrote in the British Medical Journal that it was time to “bust the myth of the role of saturated fat in heart disease”. He added that the food industry had effectively contributed to heart disease by lowering saturated fat levels in food and replacing it with sugar. Tory peer Matt Ridley, also a science author, said there should be an inquiry “into how the medical and scientific profession made such an epic blunder”. He described the US change of advice as a “mighty U-turn” and said studies linking high cholesterol and saturated fat in food to heart disease were “tinged with scandal”.
IN the fast-paced world we live in, almost all of us seem to suffer from stress of some sort or another. Or, at least we think we do. Like many other terms such as depression, the word “stress” has become greatly overused. Genuine stress is not something we should just accept as going hand-in-hand with today’s society. Stress is bad news. And do you want to know the worst part? The things that cause us the greatest stress are often nothing more than our own perceptions of a situation that doesn’t actually exist. In other words, we literally stress ourselves out for no reason. Pretty stupid really, for a supposedly-smart species. We worry that we need to look a certain way, have a certain car or the latest technological gadget when, in fact, we don’t! Or we jump to the wrong conclusions over another person’s behaviour, without knowing the facts. We invent scenarios that haven’t happened, and worry about how we’ll cope. We really are our own worst enemies! It’s not hard to see why so many people suffer from stress: aside from what I’ve just mentioned, there are also very real, everyday factors that lead us to the verge of breaking point. Stress comes at us in various forms, but there are four main sources, some of which we have control over, others we don’t. Life events: such as marriage, divorce, moving house, death of a family member, etc. Physical stress: pain, illness or surgery, perhaps, are things we cannot control. Internal stress: our thoughts and feelings, have the ability to create major stress, if we let
them. This is one area where we really do have control. Typical causes include negative thinking, bottling-up emotions, past emotional upset of which we refuse to let go, low self-esteem, resentment, perfectionism, and so on. Lifestyle factors are also within our control. These include poor diet, not enough sleep, drinking too much, overspending, working too much, poor time management, etc. How stress affects us There are two types of stress: acute and chronic. I am almost 100% sure that none of you has acute stress in your life now because if you were really in an acutely stressful situation (about to be run over by a car, for example), you’d be far too worried about saving your life to be reading this article! Acute stress is very short-lived and disappears as soon as the situation is resolved. It produces the famous flightor-fight response, when our heart rate and blood pressure increases, and adrenaline and other hormones are released into our blood to give us the energy we need to deal with the situation. The stress usually passes quickly, after which time we are either dead or (preferably) our parasympathetic nervous system takes over, returning us to a state of relaxation. Chronic stress is when a situation is ongoing, such as an illness, unemployment, relationship problems, etc, and has a harmful effect on the body. On a physiological level, your body responds in pretty much the same way as if you were in mortal danger. But if the worry is not shortlived, and your state of anxiety continues, your sympathetic nervous system goes into overdrive, which is bad news for your body. Stress can cause an endless list of symptoms, including headaches; fatigue; chest pains; angry outbursts; over-eating or the opposite; lack of motivation or insomnia.
How to reduce it Firstly, you have to know the sources: what stresses you out? Think about things that cause you internal stress, such as unrealistic expectations, as well as external stressors, such as family pressures or work. There are several things we can all do to quieten our mind, to achieve a more peaceful, calm state, from which we are much better equipped to deal with problems that arise in a less frenzied way, without feeling overwhelmed and desperate. Yoga is an excellent example of an exercise we can do to drown out all the noise, and meditation is another. Meditation can be anything from sitting on the grass, legs crossed, to walking in the mountains. Learning to breathe correctly is also important, too. Hardly anyone I know breathes the way they should. Shallow, erratic breaths starve our lungs and, therefore, muscles and organs of vital oxygen. Try taking 10 deep breaths right now and see how much calmer you feel. But the single, most important change you can make is to train yourself to think more rationally and more positively. The calmer you are in any situation, and the more you believe in your own ability to cope with whatever comes your way, the more empowered you will feel. And the less stressful the situation will become. This difference in approach will, ultimately, decide whether your health suffers or not. At Activate, we’re holding our first Zen Day next Saturday (13th June). This is specifically designed to help calm, empower and revive tired, stressed bodies and minds, and will include meditation, breathing classes and yoga, as well as a delicious lunch. FLOAT INTO the SUMMER By Carl Pattison
WITH summer well and truly here, there is bound to be an occasion when you need a perfect summer outfit.
Hot of the catwalks are these little numbers, which all have one thing in common: they FLOAT, and are ideal for most figure shapes. As long as you pick a sheer fabric, these dresses will flatter every curve you have - perfect if you are pear-shaped or have a rounder figure because the fitted top half is offset by the more voluptuous bottom half. Try to go for more of a shorter-to-mid-length style because longer could look too much like an evening gown. But as long as it has ample fabric from the waist down, then it’s bound to make you look so elegant. If you are to pull off this look, team up your dress with a pair of killer heels, which will elon-
gate your silhouette and make your legs seem never-ending. As this is an upmarket look, set the whole thing off with the right accessories, too. Nothing too heavy on the jewellery front - just something to complement the dress, but not too fussy. The best colours to go for this season are your pastels - anything from silver blue to blush pink, and white and nudes also look superb. Just don’t overkill the look by going for a patterned dress. Keep it sheer and simple because florals could look too mumsy. This sort of look could
carry you from a day wedding to the night do without having to change. Teamed with the right combination of accessories, it could also be an evening look. So it’s not just your one-off dress. This is a classic line that will never date, so you’ll be able to get more than one wear out of it. When choosing this type of dress, it’s essential that you try it on with the heels you intend to wear because this look rarely pulls it off in flatter shoes. So if this grabs your attention and you feel it will work for you, these are just some of the dresses available: Ellie Saab, Donna Karen and D&G. But others are available, and it is up to you to track down your little floaty number for this summer.

this week’s Riddles Rowing Across the River
Patrick and Eric are on the two opposite banks of a river. They both have a rowing boat. They both start at the same time towards the opposite bank. They pass each other at 180 meters from the bank where Patrick departed. When reaching the opposite bank, they both take a rest for the same amount of time before they return. On the way back, they pass each other at 100 meters from the bank from where Patrick returned. Patrick and Eric both row with a constant speed, but Eric rows faster.

Last Issue's Answers:
Solution to: Confusing Clock
Suppose that a second pair of hands turns together with the wrong pair of hands, but then in the correct way. When the wrong pair is in the same position as the correct pair, this means that the time is shown in the right way. First, look at the minute hands that are at the twelve. The “wrong” hand turns twelve times slower than the “correct” hand. Let x be the distance (in minutes) that the “wrong” hand has progressed when the two minute hands are in the same position again. The “correct” hand then has progressed 60+x minutes (one complete round more). So it then holds that 12x = 60+x. This means that x = 5 5/11 minutes. For the hour hands that start at six holds the same. The confused clock therefore shows the correct time again after 60 + 5 5/11 minutes, so at 5 5/11 minutes past 7.

TENERIFE ARE SAFE! CD Tenerife 2 Real Betis 0
By Roscoe TENERIFE will be playing second-tier football again next season after an inspired win over league champions Real Betis.
Over 19,000 people witnessed a passionate Tenerife side securing their league status with a fine victory. This was an afternoon which reignited the passion in the club, but left many questions unanswered. Captain Marvel Suso opened the scoring, and top-scorer Diego Ifran made the match safe against a Real Betis who seemed happy to enough to enjoy an afternoon in the sun. They looked as though they had partied hard after securing promotion to La Liga the previous Sunday. Racing Santander fans wouldn’t have been impressed, and it was certainly the right time to play them. That said, manager Raul Agne had a fullstrength side to choose from and, for once, the chairman played a blinder. With tickets as cheap as three euros, the fans came out in force. The biggest crowd for five years saw a firedup Tenerife, who were always going to get the job done. And the fulltime whistle brought cheers of delight, tears of joy and a collective sigh of relief. Then the questions started. Why can’t they play like this every week? Why can’t we get 19,000 fans and that sort of atmosphere every match? Vitolo was looking around saying the same thing: “If the club lower the prices, the fans will come.” Suso agreed, saying: “I thank the fans for coming to this last game, and the support helped us achieve victory. We must learn from our mistakes this season and look ahead.” He added: “If we can get this sort of support,
who knows how far we can go?” And planning for next season has already begun. President Miguel Concepcion has retained the backroom staff as he again goes for continuity. The director of football, Alfonso Serrano, has had a poor season and most of his signings were failures. Concepcion has given him another go saying: “Serrano is a good professional who has not been successful. But everyone deserves a second chance, and Serrano will get one.” (He will not get a third!). “Alfonso has two years to go on his contract and I have decided not
to dismiss him. He has our full confidence. Regarding the project for next year, it is a project on which we have been working for some time.” Raul Agne, who has been given an extended contract and, presumably, a bit of input on transfer targets, said: “I am delighted to stay in Tenerife. All I wanted was to be valued. The important thing at this level is unity. “I want us to be like Eibar or Girona next season. If I did not have that ambition, then I would not be here. The results are everything and I expect us to get them.” The Real Betis match
was the last in Santa Cruz for a number of players. Cristo Martin will not have his contract renewed. Maxi and Diego Ifran will leave when their loan deals finish, as will Iker, Juan Carlos and Abdon Prats. But Unai Albizua has played 28 times on loan from Athletic Bilbao and he could stay. His parent club have told him he will be released, and Serrano is keen for him to stay. It is understood that he favours a move back Position
to the mainland, but Tenerife are said to be leading the chase for his signature. The main summer transfer target will again be Angel Rodriguez. He left Tenerife after more than 100 games in 2010. He spent last season at Eibar, but he will be released now they have been reinstated in La Liga. Surely this is the summer Angel comes home! Tenerife will sign five or six players only, with youth the key word. Well, apart from goalie
Dani, who has been offered a two-year deal. But he has a few options, including interest from England. Talking of the Championship, Aridane is being lined up for a move to the English second tier. A southern team and a Lancashire club are interested in him, while a northern side have been watching the previously-mentioned Angel. Youngster Omar, who had a fine game against Real Betis, has been offered a first-team contract. Abel, Jairo, Angel Galvan and Alberto Jiménez will all be given a chance to earn firstteam squad places after successful loan seasons in the third tier, while Nano is also returning. He has been a big hit at L’Hospitalet and will be the second striker in the new campaign. With a few B-team players also set to be given a chance, there is no doubt the kids are all right. If they are good enough, they will form the basis of an exciting period for Tenerife fans, with young, hungry, local-based talent. The season concludes at Numancia in a match that means little to both sides. The play-offs get underway on Wednesday, when Las Palmas travel to Real Valladolid. Vamos Real! Photos: Gary Hill

Sam gives it both barrels BOOTHEN Army’s Sam has started the season like a house on fire, hitting three maximums already. And two came last Friday during his team’s 8-0 drubbing of Palms Pool Bar.
So it seems apt that a top-gunner like Sam should play for the Army, who rocketed to the top of Division One with a three-point advantage over Bar 180 A. They were held to a draw by last term’s runners-up, The Pub, but my sources tell me that Bar 180 would have won had Mike Telf turned up! Emerald Shamrocks recorded their third straight 5-3 win, this time at home against Exiles. In fact, all three successes came by winning the trebles leg. They must be drinking shandy, methinks!
Emerald Lounge tasted defeat for the first time as they shipped six points at Gaffers, while Jim hit a 180 for Boothen Titans in a whitewash win at Bar 180 B. Waterfall’s Kelvin also struck a maximum at Palms Sports Bar, although that wasn’t enough to prevent a 5-3 setback, while the Playboys put a tick in the win column as they restricted Pas O Nadas A to just one point. A 4-4 draw at home against Gaffers Jucee Girls was enough to see Barracuda Hunters claim top spot in Division 2, albeit alphabetically, with Marilyns also having 16 points after they beat Waterfall B 7-1. Hot on their heels are Spear Chuckers, (have you seen the size of their pizzas?) who put seven past Bar Leone, despite a first 180 from Leones’ Mark. The Playgirls’ season

Heartache for Hamilton AN unbelievable error by Mercedes cost world F! champion Lewis Hamilton a second Monaco Grand Prix victory on Sunday.
Having gained pole the previous day in qualifying, Hamilton all but had the race sewn up when leading from the start before a crash,
Spain’s World Cup probe A SHOCK defeat suffered by Spain against South Korea in the 2002 World Cup is under scrutiny, amid the FBI’s long-running corruption investigation into FIFA. The Koreans’ progress to the 2002 semi-final has been questioned, following protests in the Italian press,. The Corriere dello Sport newspaper alleges that the referee who presided over Spain’s penalty shoot-out defeat by the Koreans was put in charge of the game by bent
FIFA delegate Jack Warner. Spain had two seemingly legitimate goals ruled out by Egyptian referee Gamal AlGhandour during normal time, before losing 5-3 on penalties. The newspaper also claims the Koreans’ victory over Italy in the previous round was also fixed. Ecuadorian referee Byron Moreno, who sent off Francesco Totti during that match, has since served a 26-month prison sentence for drugtrafficking in New York.
not of his making, interrupted his flow. The bewildered driver, cruising along with a 25-second lead on lap 64 of the 78-lap race, realised the safety car had been deployed following a heavy shunt for Max Verstappen at Ste Devote. Incredibly, Mercedes decided there was enough time for a precautionary, extra pit stop for a tyre change. They were wrong! Hamilton emerged from the pit lane marginally behind Vettel, with Rosberg already heading the queue behind the safety car. When racing resumed, Rosberg cleared off into the distance, while Hamilton could do nothing to overhaul the Ferrari, despite his fresher tyres. He will surely spend the rest of the season
puzzling why Mercedes should have called him in when everything was under his control. Even more annoying for him will be the fact that team-mate Rosberg, conceding half-asecond each lap and in no danger of interrupting his progress, went on to win his third consecutive Monaco GP, thanks to his team. He now sits just 10 points adrift of Hamilton in the standings with the Canadian Grand Prix coming up on Sunday. Lewis later said he assumed that Rosberg and Vettel had already pitted. Not so! Mercedes left Rosberg out, and, of course, Ferrari did likewise with Vettel. Overtaking is always difficult here, so why stop at that late stage? Team boss Toto Wolff
described it as the worst day of his life, and offered a public apology to his driver. Hamilton, clearly seething, simply repeated the Mercedes mantra: “We win as a team and we lose as a team.” But that will not have been the end of it. Rosberg couldn’t believe his luck, having settled for second place and another Mercedes 1-2 almost from the off, when Hamilton shot into the lead and held it. Responsibility for the decision to call Hamilton in must lie with Paddy Lowe, technical director of Mercedes. But that’s
of little consolation to their gifted but devastated driver. If this wrecks his title chance - it surely won’t - there will be a heap of soul-searching within the Mercedes set-up at the end of the season.

Gaffers do the double
THERE were two fine finals in the Direct Telecom Pool League on Tuesday at the Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf. And the night was a reminder of the old sporting adage: always take your chances.
Gaffers A took the Tenerife Pool Tables
Cup to add to the League title and become double winners, but they were pushed hard by cup specialists The Phoenix. “The scoreline didn’t reflect the game”, is something of a league catchphrase but again, it was so true. The Phoenix boys will spend all summer trying to work out how they didn’t beat Gaffers. I’m not saying for one moment that the best team didn’t win;
Just that it should have been much closer on the scoreboard. Sergio got the ball rolling for The Phoenix with a smart win over the league’s topranked player. Ashley would lose his hair later in the night, and he lost the first frame with some uncharacteristically soft shots. Sergio knows the Terrace table well and smoothly finished the frame. Like Ashley, Neil was in trouble in the second match. Kev was a decent favourite when he had two shots late on but a couple of loose efforts let Neil back in. At 1-1, the third frame was always going to be vital as two heavyweight Newcastle fans clashed. Kev made the early running, only for Harry to reassert. An error from Kev gave Harry two shots and a golden opportunity to get the Phoenix back in front. His second shot was sloppy and left him a tricky cut on the black. With his daughter Laurel watching, Harry decided to go for it. It was a surgeon’s cut and the black inched to the pocket. But so did the white! The black took an age
to drop in and then, a second later, the cue ball fell into the middle bag. It was tough luck and, psychologically, the match turned. Steve made a good start in frame four, only for Lee to find his match eye. He took the chance when offered with a decent clearance and at 3-1, Phoenix heads dropped. Ashley got his revenge on Sergio in frame 5, then Neil seven-balled Paul to make it 5-1. It was rough for the Los Abrigos army, and worse was to come. The two Kev’s did battle in frame 7 after the food break and Gaffers’ Kev was flowing. There was nothing bald Kev could do to stop another Gaffers win. With his side drinking in the last-chance
saloon, Harry needed a captains performance to keep the tie alive and duly did so against Top Six Dave. He needed a repeat straight away as frame 9 saw him up against Lee. It was a tense battle that could have gone either way. At the death, Lee went for a treble on the black. Some may say he had God on his side (in joke), while others would say it was a great treble/double. Either way, the black ferreted down the pocket to give Gaffers the frame, the cup and the double. They partied late into the morning … and the heads may still be sore! It was a similar story on the second table as Second Division Gaffers B played their hearts out against Tenerife Hammers A in the Tenerife Pool Tables Plate. Jambo snatched a nervy opening frame, which set the pattern for the night. Gaffers would start fast and then either tie up or miss the crucial pot. Frame 2 saw Hammers captain Paul, who has been in amazing form, up against Harry. And the second-tier player made the running. He was down to the black, a straight-
enough pot, only to maybe rush it a little and miss. Paul didn’t need a second invitation. Frame three was the same as Wez took his chance and again, in frame four, when Fritzel looked to be in trouble. The finishing was the difference and it was a harsh lesson for Gaffers. Yet their heads didn’t drop. There was no doubt they raised their game and seemed to relish the tougher competition. They could be useful if they make the top flight next year. Eventually, they did nick a few frames, with Paul and Wez tasting defeat, but fittingly, Jambo sunk the winning black. He is leaving the team at the end of the season and it was a nice way for him to finish. The 7-2 scoreline mirrored the Cup result. The night was another success and the league would like to thank Cup and Plate sponsors Lorraine and Nick, from Tenerife Pool Tables, and Andy from the Terrace Bar. This Tuesday, there are a few catch-up matches before the singles tournament the following week.
Granadilla girls’ Ayoze boost NEWCASTLE star Ayoze Perez will be hoping another member of his family can cap a fine season with promotion to the top flight.
The young CD Tenerife legend will be cheering on his niece as UD Granadilla go in search of an historic place in Ladies La Liga. They just missed out on promotion to Spain’s top flight last season,
when they were denied by Albecete, but this year they hope, finally, to make the promised land. Tomorrow (Saturday) they host Real Betis in
the first leg of a two-legged play-off final. The match is at El Medano’s football stadium, kickoff 5pm. Tickets are just three euros and can be bought
on the gate. Granadilla pulled in 1,800 for the last round, and the club hope the appearance of Ayoze will swell the crowd even further.
