Tenerife’s cruising success Continued from front. The hard work put into the project by the Tourism Board, Cabildo, Canary Government and local town halls is finally bearing fruit. And

it looks set for a long, sustained harvest. There have been plenty of critics of the longterm view held by tourist chiefs to aim for a higher-end customer.

Santa Cruz Port expansion A THIRD cruise terminal is planned for the Santa Cruz Port by September 2016, in time to host the Seatrade Cruise Med event.

It will feature a huge luggage area, plus a check-in section with 50 desks, several waiting places, a security area, an aerial gangway plus a taxi lane and bus-parking site. The new building, adjoining the two existing cruise terminals, will offer easy access to the city centre. This will enable Tenerife to continue handling ships from Thomson Cruises, MSC Cruises, Fred. Olsen Cruise Line, Hapag Lloyd Cruises and Windstar Cruises. Although cruise traffic dropped slightly

in 2013, Tenerife welcomed 298 calls and 544,839 passengers. This year, the city has enjoyed calls from some of the newest large cruise ships including P&O Cruises’ Britannia and Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas. TUI Cruises’ newbuild Mein Schiff 4 will call in November and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic will visit in December. Cruise numbers are expected to be boosted this September, when guests will be able to take direct flights from Newark, in New York, to Tenerife. Tenerife Tourism Board Office hopes the new flight route will enable cruise companies to expand the number of itineraries they offer in the Canary Islands and surrounding areas.

They deserve to be applauded for having the strength to see the project through. Planned upgrades for many tourist areas, along with new com-

mercial centres, shopping and leisure opportunities, and a readying of the ports, has seen the planted acorns growing into fully-grown trees.

As you will read on this page, and in our special feature on the “Anthem of the Seas”, on Pages 10 and 11, the cruise industry is welcoming Tenerife with open arms.

The Island has a real chance to make its mark over the next few years. And, being an all-yearround tourist resort, the sky is very much the limit.

Cruisers hunting the bargain buys THE Canary Islands welcomed a total of 1.9 million cruise passengers throughout 2014, representing a 17.38% increase from the previous year. Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente, the Canary Government’s Deputy Tourism Minister, was delighted with the figures. “The average expenditure per cruise tourist is 43.8 euros a day - a fig-

ure that has been growing in recent years,” he said. “This sum exceeds the average of the overall tourists visiting the Canaries, which stands at 37.63 euros. The study, held every two years, detailed that of the total expenditure, 53% of tourists spend on shopping, 23% on food and drink, 13% on transport and 11% on excursions. Fernandez de la Puente said the cruise business in the online world was expansive and that the Canary Islands still “re-

mains to be developed” to take full advantage. He pointed out that usually, the largest ships bring tourists who spend less, so “we must not be swayed by the size”. The Deputy Tourism Minister also explained that often, the tourist first chooses the ship and then selects the destination. “Of course, consolidation is a key of the port of Las Palmas as a base because it helps to consolidate cruise tourists and makes them want to repeat the trip, which

means it is on the right track.” In any case, he said, the expenditure on each island depends largely on the “Offers”, so he asked those entrepreneurs lacking these facilities to adapt their businesses accordingly to attract this type of tourist, and also provide customer care in several languages. He also said that the Canary Islands ports and the Deputy Minister had already “defined” strategic cruise plans, which play a specific role in promotions.

Cruise forum for experts THE Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque yesterday (Thursday) hosted the Tenerife Cruise Forum - a gathering between travel professionals and cruise-industry leaders.

It highlighted the Island’s cruise opportunities to representatives

from all over Spain. Speakers included Alfredo Serrano, director of the employer cruise CLIA-Spain; Marcus Puttich, director of port operations of TUI Cruises; Emiliano Gonzalez CEO of MSC Cruises, and Rafael Fernandez, director of marketing for Costa Cruises, among others. The forum was opened by Pedro Rodríguez Zaragoza, chairman of the San-

ta Cruz Port Authority, Cabildo President Carlos Alonso and Virginia Lopez, General Director of Cruises News Media Group. During the day the state of the global cruise industry was addressed, plus Tenerife as a tourist destination and cruise leader in the mid-Atlantic; the figure of the port agent and excursions; choosing cruise itineraries and promoting associated

European cruise ports, among others. This forum was aimed at professionals in the port sector, the auxiliary industry, travel agencies, institutions related to the promotion of tourism and hotel services managers, guides, restaurants, museums, taxis, shops and general services which can benefit from Tenerife’s cruise passenger arrivals.

YET another royal controversy has erupted over Cristina de Borbón, younger sister of King Felipe, who is facing a tax-fraud trial regarding the socalled Nóos case.

The monarch is said to have stripped his sister of her Duchess of Palma title, which she held since 1997 when she married former Olympic handball player Iñaki Urdangarin. But the Princess’s lawyer, Miquel Roca I Junyent, claimed just a few hours later that it was Cristina who renounced the nobility title in a letter written earlier this month. A Royal Palace source cast doubt on this version of events, saying: “The renunciation letter arrived by fax yesterday, after the King informed Cristina of his decision.” Her husband, once admired within the royal family, has since become a major suspect in an embezzlement case involving no-bid contracts, awarded to his Nóos Institute by the regional governments of Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Cristina, known as the ‘Infanta’, fwas embroiled in the case through her joint ownership of a company which, allegedly, served to receive the ill-gotten funds. She is also alleged to have used company credit cards to make personal purchases, then claimed tax deductions. But Cristina, for more than three years since she became a target of the court investigation, has refused to give up her succession

asked the Princess around 400 questions during her appearance of more than six hours in his courtroom. She answered “I don’t know” 182 times! The case against her has itself been steeped in controversy, which has led to a public falling out between Judge Castro and his anticorruption attorney, Pedro Horrach. The latter believes there is no hard evidence to put Cristina on trial, and suggests that she is being persecuted for who she is, rather than for what she has done. On the other hand, the judge claims that putting the Princess on the stand proves that everybody is equal before the law, regardless of their royal background.

brother Felipe, who accessed the throne a year ago, have pleaded with her to take this symbolic step to help improve the royal family’s image. Juan Carlos himself stepped down at a time of unprecedented low popularity for the institution, marked by street protests by supporters of turning Spain into a republic. Sources from the royal household claim: “The decision to renounce the rights of dynastic succession continue to be in the hands of the Infanta.” On 8th February last year, Cristina became the first member of Spain’s royal family to testify in court as a target of a criminal investigation. Binter stressed in a statement that its new ATR aircraft will gradually replace the older Binter turbo-props, allowing the airline to reduce maintenance costs and provide higher levels of comfort. The airline, which now operates 16 ATR 72-500 planes, will begin to receive the new models in the autumn. Binter executive Alfredo Morales high-

lighted in the statement that, for nearly two decades, ATR aircraft have proven to be “a good choice” for flights between the islands. And ATR director Patrick de Castelbajac thanked Binter for putting its trust in his company for the planes’ daily operations. “They provide a winning trust of efficiency, reliability and comfort,” he assures.

THE Canarian economy continues to grow. During the first quarter of 2015, the islands’ gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 3.1% over the same period last year.

That’s according to the Canarian Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), which says the Archi-

pelago is “advancing quicker that the whole of Spain”. The rise of regional GDP stands four-tenths above the state mark of 2.7% and exceeds “significantly” the growth prediction from the European Union. They expected Canarian growth to be around 1.4%. Javier González Ortiz, acting Minister of Economy, Finance and Security, said: “These figures highlight the continuous progress of the Is-

lands’ economy and the positivity we now have. “This strengthens the recovery at a higher rate than the rest of the state, and I hope this new rise will result in the creation of more jobs.” In terms of sectors, all industries are experiencing positive annual growth rates. The increase was led by the construction industry, which increased by 3.5%, followed by services with 3.2%.

Forest fire giving cause for concern

5 CW

Water chief’s bubbly THE dry winter and spring has sparked fears of a summer of forest fires in Tenerife. There have already been one of two minor incidents, and last week saw the first significant blaze.

A large fire broke out in Vilaflor, wiping out about 16 hectares of pine forest and scrub on a track near Fuente Fria and the recreational area of Las Lajas. The blaze occured next to the insular road leading to the Teide National Park access. The Cabildo said the flames burned a covered ground within a radius of 2km. The TF-21 was closed

for safety reasons on the stretch between Vilaflor and Boca Tauce during the early hours on Thursday. Over 250 people from different resources and organisations got the fire under control. The Forestry Brigades (Brifor) of the Cabildo mobilized two pumpers, two anti-fire vehicles and two high mobility tactical vehicles. Three helicopters

Drinker’s dishwater death A MAN has died after drinking dishwater detergent, allegedly, instead of white wine, at a Spanish bar.

It happened in Benicarló city, on Spain’s east coast, and Spanish media reports that a bar worker may have put the detergent in an empty wine bottle, which then, inadvertently, was sent to the cold room. Police sources said the 51-year-old Spaniard may have been served

the substance accidentally after ordering a drink at the bar. He was taken to a nearby hospital, suffering from burns to his windpipe, throat and stomach, and later died there.

The Civil Guard is investigating whether anyone could be held criminally responsible for manslaughter. The bar owner was arrested before being released, pending further enquiries.

Hard-done-by Canarians CANARIAN workers earn around 5.1% more than in 2010, with an average salary of 1,633 euros a month at the end of 2014. That compared with the 1,553-euro mark in 2010, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). However, Canarians are still the worst-paid workers in Spain, and the situation

is unlikely to improve because the salary increase over the last four years is lower than the national average, which grew 6.2%. Thus, Canarian workers earn 18% less than the national average, which adds up to an income gap of 358 euros a month, or 4,300 a year. The community whose average gross salary is closest to the Canary

Islands is Extremadura, where this stands at 1,648 euros per month. The highest average salary is, in turn, earned by the Basques, who receive 2,393 euros per month on average. Canarians in 2014 on average received 80 euros a month more than in 2010, which is reflected in an annual revenue increase of 960 euros.

worked in stages over the affected area and the Cabildo was delighted with the team work between the different departments and emergency services. The Forestry Brigades of the Cabildo will continue, with the support of other troops from different organizations and institutions, to monitor the wooded area of the island during the summer.

FOLLOWING the severe drought of 2012, the Island reservoirs are currently at 72% of capacity, which does not bother José Joaquin Bethencourt, the Councillor in charge

“Despite a relatively dry winter, we are in the best place when you look at the numbers over the last four years,” he said. Bethencourt has a point. In 2012, Tener-

ife was facing a severe drought - and the dry year brought many problems to the agriculture sector. At the worst point, Tenerife’s reservoirs were holding just 18% of their capacity. But today, in the South, San Isidro, El Saltadero in Granadilla and Arona’s San Lorenzo are all topped-up well. In the North, some reservoirs are above 90% full, especially at Montaña de Taco in Buenavista which is 92%, and the Santa Cruz Los Realejos one is touching 95%.

North airport still foggy ... after nearly 86 years Canarian toddlers are not so well-educated

A MAJOR new education survey highlights that Canarian kids are falling behind those educated on the mainland.

IN the summer of 1929, Lufthansa planned the first flight into Tenerife’s North airport - and it seems that little has changed since that proposed Berlin trip.

At the time, Tenerife Cabildo was racing against the clock to get an airstrip on the Island and, under intense pressure, they looked at the Los Rodeos area. Leasing 17 hectares of ground, they rushed out an airfield late in

the summer of 1929, only for Lufthansa to cancel its flight at the last minute because of a problem with the plane. This gave the Cabildo a little more time to finish, or part-finish the airport. Finally, on 5th December, the Arado VI Lufthansa plane landed “with great difficulty” - exactly where the present day Tenerife North Airport stands. Although nearly 86 years have passed since then, Los Rodeos still has the same location and, crucially, the same weather problems as then. The La

Laguna field where the Lufthansa plane arrived was far from perfect, but it was available. Nobody in 1929 thought about the local weather or, in particular, the well-known fog problem! In the early years, especially during the months of April, May and June, many passengers suffered diversions and cancellations, caused by the combination of trade winds and fog. Much like today! AENA, the authority which controls Spanish airports, said this week that it had done

everything possible to minimise the weather problem there, adding: “The North airport often has bad weather something about which we are trying to find a solution as a priority.” Even last week there were more than a dozen delays and diversions to the South airport, and AENA confirmed that last year, 337 flights were diverted or cancelled from a total of 48,380, which accounted for 0.69%. In 2015 so far, 89 of 19,635 transactions (0.45%) have been affected, so it seems that progress is being made.

The survey states: “An early start to education has long-term benefits. The earlier a child gets some learning, significantly and positively affects the form of academic performance of students.” This is one of the main conclusions of the study, “The Impact of Early Childhood Education in Primary results”, compiled by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. It is a serious warning to the autonomous communities, such as the Canary Islands, which have made little progress in schooling. The findings show that only a very small percentage of Canarian kids have education before the age of two. In fact, it amounts

to just 7%, and this figure is far short of the national average, which is about 30%. In the Basque Country, 52% of under-twos get some education, while the figure is 43% in Madrid. Once kids hit two in the Canaries,12.3% get some lessons, compared with almost 50% in the whole of Spain. The study was sponsored by the European Society and Education Foundation, and its authors were Daniel Santin and Gabriela Sicilia. They suggest: “Primary Education has effective training, and evidence shows that children schooled since the age of two get better results in mathematics and reading by 6%, compared with those not integrated into the education system until a year later.” After presenting the results, the researchers proposed opening a debate to “improve the Spanish educational system through the Early Childhood Education”.

Operating theatres on hold PLANS for opening six new operating theatres at the Candelaria hospital have been dealt another setback.

It has been confirmed that the theatres will not be functioning until the end of August or the start of September. Last December, Canary Islands Health Service director Juana Maria Reyes said they would be ready “between April or May”. But new delays mean it will not actually be ready until the end of summer - four years after they should have been open.

Reyes said: “There has been another slight delay for work on the operating theatres’ aircoolers, mainly because it is a complex job due to their location. “The work is carried out in an area affecting other units, where there are professionals and other users. It means we have to juggle around with the dynamics of hospital activity for the minimum disruption.” He added: “Another aspect t h a t

prevents the new operating theatre being ready is because the post-operation care has to be complete as well. “The construction for the ward is just about done, but there are still a few issues around the arranging of after-surgery beds. “This work is estimated to be c o m -

pleted in the third quarter of this year. And remember, the six operating theatres are not being added to the existing ones but are replacing them. “This is because the current ones are outdated, having been built in the Seventies.

And although they currently function perfectly and are well-equipped, they are suffering from serious structural problems because of their age.” And Reyes pointed out the problem of location. “The theatres are scatt e r e d a n d pa-

tients have to travel (usually on a stretcher) through several halls and numerous elevators to get to them,” he said. “However, the new ones are grouped together in the new surgical block. They have the best accessibility possible and will be equipped with the latest surgical technology.”

The flip-flop flap By N332.es

WE get a lot of emails at n332.es on a range of subjects, and barely a day goes by without someone asking about flipflops, and whether it is illegal to drive in them.

The editor says...

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

It don’t mean Jack

DOING this job, I often get to meet or interview a raft of celebrities. Some of them are lovely, some are just wallys.

For me it’s a case of speak as you find. Last summer, right at the start of the World Cup, a gang of young footballers were out for a week’s jolly. I bumped into a couple of them and they came up to Linekers for the opening England match. At the time Harry Maguire was the Sheffield United captain and an Under-21 international. A fair few football fans noticed him and, even though he was kicking back with his girlfriend, he was happy to pose for every picture and sign every autograph. Ditto a quieter lad who was part of the posse. He had just finished a decent season at Notts County and was looking forward to being part of the first-team squad in August at Aston Villa. After a fine breakthrough 10 months, all

football fans now know who Jack Grealish is. He has made such a mark that both England and Ireland want him to pull on their jersey. It’s a tough choice for Jack, and there is even talk of a move to a bigger club. He played in the FA Cup final a few weeks ago and after, a relaxing week’s break with the girlfriend (whom he has been with since 14), he came here for a lads’ five-day holiday. He enjoyed Tenerife so much he returned. And, as a teenager, he spent a few nights “refreshed” at some of our night venues. What’s wrong with that? He didn’t break any laws, do anything illegal or cheat on his missus. He just did what any teenager would do on holiday. The media circus surrounding THAT picture will do him and us no favours, but come on. I’m not one for quoting the bible, but John nails it. 8:7 says: “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone.” Cut the lad some slack.

can, in theory, be fined for driving with inappropriate footwear. We have known many cases of people driving with flip-flops or with high heels, who have had an accident caused by this footwear. However, there is NO article or law which prohibits the use of footwear like these, but the article we have posted here (3.1) can be applied to those drivers who have an accident as a consequence, or do not drive properly. be from the 16th or 17th century. It has been transferred to the Tenerife History Museum for analysis to try to discover more about the ancient gun, which was covered in earth and stones. But apart from obvious ageing, it is said to be in fine shape. It was inspected on Tuesday by an archaeologist, who said: “When you think that it has been

underground for a long time, it is in relatively good condition.” The historical piece was uncovered when a backhoe drained sand from the channel to enable the fishing shelter to be renovated. Adan Romero, boss of the Cofradía de la Consolación de La Punta, said that about 60 years ago, several young fishermen found and removed another cannon

with similar features from the same place. It was a little bigger than the current discovery, but it seems that both cannons came from a battle ship. Cristobal de la Rosa, Insular Director of Tenerife Historical Heritage, said that once its history had been established, the cannon would be examined, dated and put on public display.

Space balloon set for lift off... CATALAN company zero2infinity has revealed that it is planning to bring “space” balloon trips to the Archipelago.

The firm, leading a new wave of space companies, is preparing to set the flight at about 36km high, departing from Córdoba and the Canary Islands. Jose Mariano Lopez Urdiales, zero2infinity founder, said the balloons fly three times higher than a commercial airliner, over 99% of the atmosphere. “It’s an amazing way to see our planet and, from where we fly, you will see the curvature of the earth along with the black sky - with a blanket of stars either day or night, said Lopez. “Seeing the earth from space is the dream of many people.” The project is believed to be costing 60 million euros, and the price for being a balloon space tourist will be around 110,000 euros. The company says it already has reservations and contracts with firms which want to make these trips. Zero2infinity is still

conducting tests without crew on board, but it hase all the required permits and expects to start putting humans inside the capsules in the next year. The pressurised cabin has a large window, which can be enjoyed wearing normal clothes. And the balloons are like commercial airplanes, minus the noise because they travel very slowly. Lopez stressed that it was a “transformative” experience that almost no one had experienced so far, and that travelling through the nearby space three times higher than a conventional flight distance - was something “out of this world.” The zero2infinity boss added: “Tourism is always looking for experiences that take you out of the usual routine and, since there are few places to see, this is one of the lines of future tourism.” He says the flights will be made from Córdoba and the Canary Islands for meteorological and geographical reasons, and also because many people with high purchasing power, and scientists, will want to go to these places.

House prices rising - but not over here THE prices of private housing in the Canaries remained stable in the first quarter of 2015. But the picture was a little different nationally where prices rose 5% in that period, compared with the first quarter last year.

After six years of falls, according to the Housing Price Index (IPV) of the National Statistics Institute (INE), there is finally an increase. The cost of housing in the first quarter slowed 30% compared with that recorded in

the last quarter of 2014, when the increase was 1.8% against the previous year. Housing prices began to fall in the second quarter of 2008 (-0.3%) and remained so until the second quarter of 2014, when it showed its first rally after 24 negative quarters. By housing type, the price of existing homes rose 1.1% in the first quarter yearly, against an increase of 1.7% in the previous quarter, while newhome costs rose 4% - 2 points higher than the fourth quarter of 2014 and the highest since the second quarter of 2008, when new properties recorded an annual rise of 5.3%.

Blaze death an accident AN inquest has found that a woman from West Yorkshire who died while on holiday in Tenerife in February accidentally set herself on fire.

Retired accounts clerk Eileen Charles, 63, who was born in Birmingham, was discovered by her partner, Anthony Tatam after being found engulfed in flames in a Santa Cruz apartment complex. But despite the efforts of medics at Candelaria Hospital and later in Madrid, Mrs Charles, who lived in

Shipley, died of multiple organ failure two days after the mystery fire. This week an inquest at Birmingham Coroner’s Court recorded a verdict of accidental death following a short hearing. Reading statements from Spanish investigators and medics, Emma Brown, assistant coroner for Birmingham and Solihull, said Mr Tatam found the mum-of-two on fire on 7th February at the Tenerife complex. The inquest heard that Mr Tatam had earlier left Mrs Charles alone in their apartment for a short time. Spanish investigators

said they found burnt fabric and skin inside the apartment on beds and on a balcony terrace. They also found a drink and packet of cigarettes on the terrace. When questioned, Mr Tatam said he believed Mrs Charles had set herself on fire by accident while drinking and smoking. Following treatment at Candelaria Hospital, Mrs Charles was transferred to a burns unit in Madrid on 9th February, where she died at 1.10pm that day. Assistant coroner Ms Brown said: “The conclusion by Spanish police following an investigation was that her

death was the result of an accident.” Ms Brown told Mrs Charles’ daughter, Natalie Cotton: “You will have more questions as to what happened in your mum’s apartment that day. It would be nice if we could provide that information. “It is not unusual, when police in any country conclude a death was the result of an accident, that we get little more information about what might have gone on.” Ms Brown recorded the cause of death as multiple organ failure, caused as a result of shock brought on through suffering severe burns.

Game of Thrones is hitting Spain again CABLE network HBO, which was behind the hit fantasy TV show Game of Thrones, has confirmed that it is coming back to Spain.

Part of the sixth season will be filmed in a number of locations in the Spanish cities of Girona (Catalonia) and Peñíscola (Valencia), among others. The shoots, planned for later this year, will take place with the collaboration of Girona and Peñiscola Councils, their respective Mayors, Carles Puigdemont and Andrés Martínez Castellá, and the film offices of both cities. The Spanish production units will be supervised by Fresco Film Services, as they were when the series came to Seville and Osuna for shoots late last year. More details about the Spain shoot will be announced at a later date. A few weeks ago, Jordi Bosch, President of Endemol Spain, revealed

in a radio interview that HBO was considering Girona as one of the new locations. That rumour has now been confirmed, and, after filming parts of season five in the Al-

cázar, the bullring in Seville and in Osuna, the production team will be returning to Spain. Game of Thrones, based on the best-selling series of books by

George R. R. Martin, is currently in its fifth season, which is being broadcast in Spain on Canal+. Shooting of season six will begin in Belfast at the end of July.

Anthem in tune By John Zammit

YOU can’t really envisage the enormity of the Anthem of the Seas until you stand alongside it and look upwards. It could be a skyscraper, but for the water keeping it afloat.

And no wonder as it’s the second-largest cruise liner ever built. It’s huge! Enormous! Mind-boggling! I know because last week, thanks to travel agents Tenerife Sunshine, I had the pleasure of visiting this eye-popping vessel,

which docked in Santa Cruz for the second time since its maiden voyage in April. A further three visits to Tenerife’s capital are planned before October, when it crosses the Atlantic for winter cruising in the Caribbean. After getting through the strict security procedures to board the Anthem - very quick and organised - we were greeted by our guide for the day, Artur, commercial manager of Royal Caribbean for the Canaries, who answered all our questions bar one: How many TV screens are there on board? This is the second quantum-class ship in the Royal Caribbean series, and it i s

billed to leave you completely and utterly gobsmacked. That is no exaggeration. Wow, it certainly did! We started our tour by going upwards, in one of the 16 lifts, to deck 13, where we found the Solarium. And from that height, I was particularly relieved that we started near the top and worked down. It is two decks high and an adult-only retreat, partially covered by a glass roof. It has an outdoor pool and an indoor pool with two whirlp o o l s , a n d is located at the front of the ship, overlooking the heli-deck. We

then went up a level to the H20 zone, where we came across the water park and kids’ play area. It has a main pool, plus a second pool, each with a large whirlpool. There is also a SeaTech, where you can get your diving and various water sports equipment and also take part in scuba classes. Two things struck me in this area, other than the cleaners climbing all over the glass roofs and polishing them above us. The first was the huge film screen, showing Big Hero 6, with seating areas in the pool. And secondly, the North Star - a capsule that rises 90 metres above sea level and offers jaw-dropping 360-degree views. Needless to say, it’s the first of i t s

kind at sea. We carried on with our tour and, as we headed to the sports hall, we walked past the main ship’s lifts. As this is glass-fronted you could get a definitive impression of just how high the ship is. This, by the way, was also one of our scariest moments because the floor of the revolving stair is glass, allowing you to see down as you walked on upwards. We arrived at the sports hall. Actually, it’s not a sports hall but a full-blown facility. There are things here that have never before been installed on a cruise ship. For instance, it accomodates two full-size basketball courts that double up as a skating rink. Then there are the bumper cars , wow! On the upper level, specific rooms are set aside for game-play such as Xbox - and, to finish it off, you have a hot-dog house. We left this area and headed for the back of the ship, passing a full-scale climbing w a l l with a huge giraffe, r a n domly, on

the deck. On arrival at the stern, we were treated to the most stunning view of Santa Cruz. This was one area of the ship I really wanted to see. Here was the Flowrider wave machine for both surfing and body-boarding. And just above, the Ripcord by iFLY a virtual wind tunnel - a simulation sky-dive machine again a cruise ship first. I really wanted to play but, unfortunately, this facaility was not open. We carried on and, as we walked through one of the indoor walkways, we all stopped to be shown the heartbeat light, which flashes

with tomorrow! in time to your heartbeat rate when you put your hands on the podium. It has to be said that the ship is based on future technology ... but it’s already here! Carrying on, we walked past an English pub and then encountered another eye-boggling sight: a human-free bar. Yes, the bar is run by robots! You sit at your table, type your order into the tablet, receive a time when your drink will be available, and the robots then happily mix it and have it ready for you to collect. And at night, they will even dance for you, mindblowing. After viewing the robotic bar, we then passed several restaurants, all different themes, and arrived at the main theatre. It seats around 1,400 people, is on two levels and would give any West End or Broadway theatre a run for its money. Tonight’s show (two tonight) featured a hypnotist, but the shows changes every day. To find out what’s on, as with any other information you need, just use one of the touch-screen TV’s which are all over the ship. From here, we walked

back past the English pub and I noticed a pool/ billiards table. Someone had to, so I asked the obvious questions: “How can you play when at sea? Don’t the balls move.” I did feel a bit stupid as I asked because the ship hadn’t moved over the last few hours. But the answer made me feel better. The tables are all fitted with self-levelling devices so that even in rough water, you can have a proper game. Unfortunately we did not get to see any of the cabins because the ship was fully occupied, but they are billed as excellent state rooms, offering several differences from those of other ships. Not only are they more spacious, but they also boast modular spaces for families which are inter-connected, as well as the 375 interior staterooms having sea views from the virtual balcony’s window-sized LED screens, showing realtime footage from exterior cameras. Our tour then took us to the music hall, and we walked through the shopping mall, where you will find some spectacular shops. We even passed a giant metal trumpet, Jamie Oliver’s restaurant - again a first for a cruise

liner - and the surprise here was the furniture; I suppose it is all about the food! We then strolled through the art gallery to the show bar, one of the many entertainment venues on board the colossal Anthem of the Seas at the back of the ship. This show bar has six dancing robotic TVs, and the windows around the whole area can be turned into a giant video screen. Making our way to lunch, we passed a lightswitch wall, where you can flick the switches to spell things out. When we got there, the message on the wall was “Believe Live Dream Aspire”. We then carried on past some of the finest restaurants ever seen and when inside one, I noticed that there was a life raft in the sea. These are tested whenever in port, and are also used to ferry passengers to shore when the ship is too big for a port. Throughout the tour, you could view either TVs for information and/or tablets for booking dinner, making payments, etc. These I believe, are operated by the rubber wristbands fitted with electronic chips given to guests. The penultimate area of our tour was the ca-

sino and as I walked in, I noticed the smell of cigars, I was told that smoking is allowed in this area alone, apart from designated areas outside. The casino had lots of slot machines, poker tables ... everything you would expect in a casino. Our final stopping-off place, before lunch was one of the “kids-only areas” and there are big signs outside telling you just that. In the lounge, there was a spacious seating area plus a tablefootball machine, sofas, bean bags, TVs and even a semi-bed area where you could lie down and watch telly. The Anthem of the Seas, had everything and more that you and a family could want on a holiday: dodgem cars, skydiving, a robotic bar-

tender, and a surf and wave machine. I get the impression that the ship is aimed at the younger cruiser, with addition activities like a circus school, roller-discos, “kids-only” lounges, the North Star that swoops over the ship and, of course, the outdoor film screen. However there is plenty to do for all ages aboard this Royal Caribbean superstar, which, by the way, has plans for a further two ships of this class. Police desperately short of numbers FOR the second time in six weeks, a senior police officer has made public concerns over policing numbers.

“We are overwhelmed by lack of personnel,” said Juan Fernandez, secretary-general of the Unified Association of Guardia Civil (AUGC) in Tenerife, at a press conference this week. He also said that the lack of human resources in South Tenerife police forces was caus-

ing major problems. One of the most graphic examples of that situation was highlighted when a patrolman in Guia de Isora, in the seaside village of Playa San Juan, had to cover not only that territory but also the neighbouring municipality of Adeje in one evening. There was literally one bobby on the beat for a nightshift. The lack of sufficient coppers is just as bad in Playa de Las Americas, which serves the needs in the municipality of Arona, and that of Gra-

nadilla, whose district spans from Granadilla and San Miguel. According to the AUGC leader: “In Las Americas, our public safety agents are overwhelmed.” The AUGC revealed that in the summer months, agents were brought in from the mainland to reinforce the numbers to meet the growing service demand. But Fernandez said that despite such temporary additions, “the number of staff will continue to be insufficient”.

Tourist’s eye horror costs hotel ‘millions’ A TENERIFE tourist, speared through the eye by a flying parasol at a hotel, could get millions in compensation following an Appeal Court ruling.

Godfrey Keefe and his family, from Gateshead, were staying at Costa Adeje’s Bahia Principe Hotel in October 2006 when a gust of wind blew an unsecured parasol into his face, causing horrendous damage to his eye. Lady Justice Gloster said in London’s Appeal Court: “The spike of the parasol penetrated his right eye socket and into his brain, causing him very serious injuries”. The judge added that Mr Keefe’s legal team

has valued his damages’ claim at more than £5 million. The 52-year-old was a director of a civil engineering firm and a keen cricketer and footballer, but the incident had left him permanently unfit for work and unable to play sport. He needed emergency surgery to remove the parasol spike, is registered partially-sighted and has had repeated operations since. His personality has also been changed forever, and he will need an intensive-care regime throughout his life. But despite his case becoming swamped in legal problems when the hotel’s Spanish owners insisted he was not entitled to sue them in England, Mr Keefe fought and won an eight-year battle for it to be heard

in an English court. Hoteles Pinero Canarias SL insisted he would have to seek justice in Spain, where his damages award would be limited to less than £600,000. But Lady Justice Gloster, sitting with Lady Justice Black and Lord Justice MooreBick, delivered a crucial victory to Mr Keefe. They ruled that, under European law, he is entitled to sue both the hotel owners and their Spanish insurers in an English court. There were “powerful policy reasons” why Mr Keefe should be allowed to fight his case before an English judge, they ruled. The court heard that judgment in his favour has already been entered against the hotel’s insurers. The sum of his damages will be assessed at a later date.

Horror as Irish students perish in balcony crash T R A GE D Y struck in Berkeley, California, late on Tuesday night when five Irish students died, along with a US woman, after a fourth-floor apàrtment balcony collapsed during a 21st birthday party.

The three men and three women were: Olivia Burke, 21, Eoghan Culligan, 21, Niccolai Schuster, 21, Lorcan Miller, 21, Eimear Walsh, 21 and Ashley Donohoe, 22, who is believed to have lived in California. Some were students at the University College, Dublin, in Berkeley to start a dream trip on popular summer-working holiday visas. Philip Grant, Consul General with the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs in the region, said the aappalling news had touched everyone in Ireland. “To have this happen at the start of this season has left us all frozen

in shock and disbelief,” he said. “We are a very close, tight-knit group. Ireland is a small country and when you have the numbers that we had here today, very few of us have been left untouched by this tragedy.” The Irish national flag was lowered to halfmast on all public buildings, including Parliament. Seven other people

were injured, some critically, when the balcony collapsed, causing those on it to crash to the ground from about 40ft (12.2m). One person is believed to have scrambled back inside as the balcony gave way. Pictures from the scene showed that the balcony, about 5ft x 10ft, appeared to have broken off from the building and landed partly on

the balcony below, and in the street. The area was cordoned off, and on the closed street below, a shrine was growing. Flowers, a pack of cigarettes, a Cal Berkeley university banner and condolence notes were left at the site. All balconies in the apartment building have been sealed off while safety checks are carried out.

A 21-year-old Irish student was asleep in the building when he heard the collapse, shortly after midnight. “I just heard a bang and a lot of shouting,” said Dan Sullivan. Another, Mark Neville, said: “I walked out and saw rubble on the street and a bunch of Irish students crying.” Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, who said there were 13 people

on the balcony when it collapsed, added: “My heart breaks for the parents who have lost children.” Police received a noise complaint concerning a loud party in the apartment at 12.41am, about an hour before the tragedy, but had not yet responded, said Officer Byron White, a Berkeley Police Department spokesman. They were then alerted that the balcony had collapsed, and Officer White said: “What the first responders said was quite disturbing.” The building, built in 2006, has apartments on the upper floor and shops on the ground floor. The neighbourhood, just blocks from Berkely’s University of California, is dotted with museums, a city library, restaurants, coffee shops and chain stores. Irish Consul Philip Grant said hundreds of Irish college students obtain temporary US visas every year to spend the summer working in the San Francisco Bay area.

Shameful Brit strippers in Magaluf will be fined IN a bid to restore the town’s reputation, the Magaluf resort in Mallorca is introducing fines of up to £500 for tourists who strip off in public.

Many of those invading Magaluf each year are Britons who have become notorious for bawdy and violent behaviour, often as a result of heavy drinking. Now, though, anyone committing one of a range of acts - including

balcony-hopping, skinny-dipping or urinating in public places - will be fined. Locals in the resort are appalled by the antics of Brit tourists, such as the video circulating last year in which a teenage British girl per-

formed sex acts on 24 men to win what she believed was a holiday. In fact, it was merely a cocktail! A number of deaths in the resort have been attributed to the evergrowing craze of “balconing”, in which tourists hop from one balcony to another, or drop from a great height into a swimming pool. In 2012, over a twomonth period, three holiday-makers died. Now, anyone caught balconing will also be prosecuted and could be fined up to 1,500 euros (£1,000). Simon Manley, Britain’s Spanish ambassador, told the Daily Mirror: “We want British visitors to Magaluf to enjoy themselves, as they do elsewhere in Spain. But we also want them to stay safe and to respect the laws and

customs. “We work closely with the local authorities in Mallorca, and we welcome any measures they take to support those aims.” Under the new laws, anyone going on a pub crawl must also wear a special uniform, and numbers will be limited to 20 per pub-crawl, along with two minders trained in first aid. Isabel Borrego, Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism said: “The Spanish government strongly supports the new regulations passed by Calvia Council. They

will foster a new framework in which all international tourists can fully enjoy their holidays in Spain in a manner that is responsible both for themselves and the destination.” However, not all locals are convinced the new laws will be enforceable. Majorca Daily Bulletin editor Jason Moore told The Independent: “A crackdown is promised every year, but nothing is done. And 36 coppers working a street which, at any one time, has 2,000 people, aren’t going to have much effect.”

Lottery’s drastic changes MAJOR changes to the National Lottery, will have the effect of reducing the chances of winning a jackpot drastically. You will soon have to match six numbers from a pool of 59 balls, instead of the current 49. Experts say the odds on scooping the top prize will drop from about 1 in 14 million to about 1 in 45 million. And the chances of matching three or more balls, which fetch a cash prize, will also drop to about one in 93. However, the overall chance of winning anything increases from about 1 in 54 to about 1 in 9.3, with players who match two numbers receiving a Lucky Dip ticket for a future draw under the changes. National Lottery operator Camelot claimed the “enhancements”, to be introduced in October, will give you better odds of becoming a millionaire. A new Millionaire Raffle will guarantee at least one millionaire per draw, while the average winning jackpot is expected to be three times the current level. Camelot said the hopes

of winning at least £1m will be better than the chances of winning the jackpot on the current game, with odds at just below one in 10 million, compared with one in just under 14 million. But lottery expert Professor Ian Walker, of Lancaster Universithy Management School, said: “The chances of winning the jackpot lengthens considerably. “It will increase the number of rollovers, which will introduce more spikes in sales, but too many rollovers can be bad - and people may think there is no point playing a game in which nobody wins. “Adding 20 numbers to the spinning wheel might just make it too difficult to win.” When tackled about the impact of the changes, Camelot said in a statement: “Although more numbers to choose from means the odds on the existing prize tiers will lengthen, players will win more often, have more chances than ever to become a millionaire and will have the chance of winning huge rolling jackpots, which we know they love.”

Dinosaurs chew ‘em up JURASSIC World, the fourth film in the series that began with Jurassic Park, has literally devoured the worldwide box office competition.

It scored the biggestever opening weekend by raking in $511m globally as it opened in cinemas, eclipsing Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ($483m in 2011). The unprecedented haul for this latest dinosaur blockbuster, which received good reviews mainly, was boosted by the $100m earned in China alone - and it topped box offices in 66 countries. The film made $204.6m in North America, just short of the record for an opening weekend in the region, held by Marvel’s The Avengers ($207m in 2012). Jurassic World was co-produced by Steven Spielberg, who directed the first two of the four films. It returns to the island theme park where,

20 years ago, scientists first revived T-Rex and other dinosaurs for paying customers. Paul Dergarabedian, a media analyst, said the film benefited from something of “a perfect box-office storm”. He added: “Nostalgia, legacy, pedigree: three things that can make a newly-updated franchise a monster. “There are many reasons Jurassic World is eating box office records like a hungry Indominus Rex: the original Jurassic Park was the second coming of Jaws and was, for many, the film that defined in the psyche their personal definition of the sum-

mer movie experience. “At the time 1993’s Jurassic Park was released, it was the first film ever to open with over $50m and, as such, was seen and loved by a massive audience which were at once repelled and thrilled by its science-run-amok premise, its homage to the dinosaurs that everyone grew up learning about and were intrigued by. “And not least of all, the collective movie theatre popcorn experience the iconic superstar director Steven Spielberg delivered.” Top 10 opening weekends 1. 2. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2: $483m (£311m) - 2011 3. Furious 7: $397m (£256m) - 2015 4. Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince: $394m (£253m) - 2009 5. Struggling airline banks on the ‘The Terminator’ MALAYSIA Airlines is “technically bankrupt”, following the twin air disasters which forced its nationalisation last year.

New chief executive Christoph Mueller, appointed last month, has announced a restructuring programme, and plans to cut about 6,000 jobs. “We are technically bankrupt,” he told a news conference. “The decline of performance started long before the tragic events of 2014.”

The airline, which says it has “offered jobs” to 14,000 of its 20,000 workforce. is operating as normal and no flights are currently affected. In March last year, Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared with 239 passengers and crew aboard. The plane is still missing. Four months later, flight MH17 was shot down by a suspected groundto-air missile while in Ukrainian airspace, with the loss of 298 passengers and crew. The two disasters proved to be the final straw for the alreadystruggling business, which had reported loss-

es for several years as a result of strong regional competition. Mr Mueller was making his first public appearance as chief executive since being hired by the carrier’s owner, Malaysian state-funded Khazanah, to lead the restruc-

turing. He has previously led the recoveries of Ireland’s Aer Lingus, Belgium’s Sabena and Germany’s Lufthansa airlines. Mr Mueller, notorious for slashing jobs at the airlines, has been dubbed “The Terminator”.

Malaysia Airlines has lurched from one restructuring to the next for more than 10 years, but it was difficult for many Malaysian taxpayers to understand the extent of the problem. In-flight service remained one of the best in the region and, until the twin tragedies of MH370 and MH17, the carrier had a good safety record. The new chief executive, who will be cracking the whip in pursuit of efficiency, said Malaysia Airlines management staff were spread out across more than 12 buildings, which meant departments were spending a lot of time to communicate with each other. Mohshin Aziz, an aviation analyst at Maybank, told the BBC that no management official “had the b**** to admit that” in the past. He said the cutting of one-third of the work force was a promising sign of real change. But Mr Mueller doesn’t have much time to revive Malaysia’s national icon. British Airways, for example, recently restarted flights from London to Kuala Lumpur, which is Malaysia Airline’s flagship route. And Malaysia Airlines faces stiff competition from legacy carriers, as well as low-cost carriers, such as AirAsia X. Mr Mueller said the airline could not expect all the job offers made to existing staff would be accepted because the company expected some to have received offers from rival carriers.

“We will embark on a second round in two weeks, and that will allow others to accept our offers,” he added. “And that may change the numbers.” The airline plans to announce a rebranding on 1st September, but Mr Mueller would not be drawn on whether this would mean a change of name. All he said was: “All constellations are open.” He admitted that in certain markets, Malaysia Airlines was a tarnished brand, but he would not say whether the rebrand would involve a change in name, logo or other alterations. Also, he would not say whether the airline would withdraw from some costly long-haul flights to Europe. In more general terms, he said it was possible the airline might reduce the frequency of flights on certain routes, or reduce the size of aircraft on those routes. The carrier would look at joint ventures before closing routes, Mr Mueller said, and would be having conversations with potential partners in the coming weeks. The airline considered long-haul flights to and from London to be among its flagship routes, he said, so it would not be altering them. In a statement, the airline said its immediate priority was to “stop the bleeding” in 2015, then to stabilise next year and start growing again by 2017.

‘Toxic air’ planes are taken to task A TOTAL of 17 former and serving cabin crew, who believe they have been poisoned by contaminated cabin air, are planning legal action against British airlines.

It follows the deaths of airline employees Richard Westgate and Matthew Bass, whose familes are convinced their deaths were caused by the cabin’s toxic fumes. The cases are being funded by the Unite union, which represents 20,000 flight staff. Workers believe they have fallen sick after breathing in fumes mixed with engine oil and other toxic chemicals. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says incidents of smoke or fumes on planes are rare, and that there is no evidence of long-term health effects. The Unite union, which is calling for a public inquiry into contaminated cabin air, has recently opened a dedicated legal unit to record and process claims from its membership. Its lawyers are now working on 17 “definite”,

individual, personalinjury claims against British airlines in the civil courts, although these are still at an early stage. Uncensored safety reports submitted to the CAA, and obtained by the Victoria Derbyshire programme, show that between April 2014 and May 2015, there were 251 separate incidents of fumes or smoke inside a large passenger jet operated by a British airline. The BBC has, where possible, chosen not to include cases which could be blamed on an internal fault like a broken toilet or air-conditioning system.

Elephant killer from the circus AN escaped circus elephant attacked and killed a 65-year-old pensioner on his daily stroll through woods near the town of Buchen, in south-west Germany. The female African elephant, named Baby, was later captured and returned to the circus. Police are now investigating how it got out of its enclosure and why it acted so aggressively. “There’s evidence of third-party involvement,” said Heidelberg police spokeswoman Yvonne Schmierer. “Ei-

ther someone forgot to shut the enclosure, or the elephant was released intentionally.” Local news agency Stimme reported that the elephant had previously injured at least two people, including a man who was thrown in the air, and a 12-year-old boy, who suffered a broken jaw when he was hit by its trunk. Stimme reported that the German branch of animal rights group Peta was urging the authorities to remove the elephant from the circus.

The statistics do not include international airlines, such as Lufthansa and Ryanair, even when travelling in British airspace. An illness was reported in 104 of the 251 cases, and on at least 28 of those flights, oxygen was administered. Around half the air on board most modern commercial jets is drawn through the engines. Campaigners say that when a fault occurs in the engine seals, a cocktail of potentially poisonous gases can reach the cabin. This includes TCP, an organophosphate known to be dangerous to human health in high enough quantities. Repeated exposure to such fume events - combined with long-term, low-level exposure to chemicals – has led to some cabin crew believing it has damaged their long-term health. The problems are said to affect the central nervous system and brain. But the CAA says there is no evidence that chemicals appear at high enough concentrations to cause harm. Lawyers and campaigners are closely watching a series of inquests, which could influence the outcome of a much larger number of civil cases. Pilot Richard Westgate died in December 2012,

aged 43, after complaining of long-term health problems. Last February, the coroner in the inquest into his death wrote to British Airways and the CAA saying that examinations of Mr Westgate’s body “disclosed symptoms consistent with exposure to organophosphate compounds in aircraft cabin air”. He asked them to take “urgent action to prevent future deaths”. Both organisations have since replied to the coroner, implying he overstepped the mark and had relied on “selective and contentious evidence”. A second inquest is set to open into the case of 34-year-old Matthew Bass, who died suddenly in January 2014 after suffering unexplained health problems. His family says a specialist post-mortem examination found high levels of toxins in his nervous system, linked to organophosphates. British Airways said in a statement: “We would not operate an aircraft if we believed it posed a health or safety risk to our customers or crew. “There has been substantial research into questions around cabinair quality over the last few years. In summary, the research has found no evidence that exposure to potential chemicals in the cabin causes

long-term ill health”. In 2013, an independent group of scientists, the Committee on Toxicity, looked at the evidence of longterm health effects for the government. And it could not establish a

link between contaminated cabin air and ill health. “The levels of harmful chemicals in planes were as low, or even lower, than those in the home or the workplace,” said Prof Alan Boobis, Chairman of the Committee. “We can’t be sure what the levels are in fume events, which are very rare, but we do have some information which would indicate that even in those circumstances, levels are probably below those which would affect health in humans.” The committee believes one explanation could be the so-called “nocebo” effect, a psychological condition where exposure to a harmless substance can lead to nausea, fatigue and other medical symptoms.

ON 26th May the Law 9/2015, published in the Official Bulletin, included an additional clause which is important for those people involved in a property foreclosing proceeding.

That’s because the Court has rejected opposition to its execution. Basically, the Law allows an extra twomonth period to appeal the resolution by which the Court rejected the allegations against enforcement (opposition). In other words, when there is a foreclosing proceeding through lack of a mortgage payment, the Court must notify the debtor, who has 10 working days to oppose it.

www.canarianweekly.com 19th June - 25th June 2015

Chance to beat

foreclosure The judge has to study the opposition and later decide whether this is acceptable. And the new law allows an appeal, based on abusive clauses, for cases in which the bank has not yet taken possession of the property. The concept of abusive clauses was studied by the law and the Courts considered abusive the “high interest” or “not proportional interest”, the so-called “floor clause” (in variable interest loans), anticipated deadline and many others. I have referred to these abusive clauses in past columns, and I will return to this issue in the future. The European Court ruled in July last year that it was against European Law that the Spanish proceeding lets the executor

appeal the resolution that accepts the opposition, but does not let the debtor appeal the resolution which rejects such opposition. The EC considers that this system leaves the debtor and his family defenceless at risk of losing his property through repossession or judicial sale. And in this case, the judge in charge of execution should have studied the situation and the validity of abusive clauses. This could be a good opportunity for mortgage debtors involved in a foreclosing proceeding, whose opposition was originally rejected. * Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer registered at the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. marianozuninosiri@ gmail.com

THE British Government’s 5th April announcement regarding the possibility of being able to access your Private Pension Entitlement (at the age of 55), led to thousands of enquiries to each and every UK Pension Scheme Provider, from ex-pats and UK residents alike. No wonder the stock response when telephoning, is: “We are currently experiencing a high volume of calls. Your call will be answered in approximately ?? minutes. You may wish to call back at another time,” etc. Infuriating? Absolutely! And here´s something else all you ex-pats need to know. As you are no longer a UK resident and are, therefore, not a UK tax-payer, you will no longer be allocated a Personal Tax Code automatically. And therein lies a potential issue. Yes, you can still take the 25% tax-free lump sum, but the remainder of your pension pot will initially be taxed at either the Emergency Tax Code Rate of 1060L (W1, M1- allowing you to earn £1,060 before paying tax in any tax year) OR be allocated a BR (Basic Rate) Code of 20%, until HMRC decides which Tax Code you are eligible for as a non-resident. Most importantly, to reclaim any overpayment of tax, you would have to apply for a refund with the Hacienda

19th June - 25th June 2015

The pension plot thickens

here in Tenerife. This would, of necessity, require the services of a Gestoria to assist in the completion of the notuncomplicated paperwork involved in such a claim, and also the additional paperwork of an annual tax return (should you not already be required to complete). In addition, if you have not previously completed the Modelo 720, a requirement for anyone with worldwide assets in excess of approximately £40,000 residing in Spain, which, of course, includes any Pension Provision (discussed in last month´s column) it may well be that to claim any overpayment via the Hacienda, you will need to declare such assets. What, initially, seemed to be a great offer from the UK Government in being able to cash in your pension pot is now, for expats anyway, a difficult and possibility unwise decision to take when considering the overall picture. And it may be more tax efficient, certainly, to consider transferring the whole of the pension elsewhere. In addition, there are a number of pension providers in the UK, including Friends Life, who are not actually offering policyholders a FlexiAccess Drawdown currently. If you are in any doubt about how the changes will affect you personally, or are unsure about whether the decision to access a lump sum is

Spanish bank on cash SPANIARDS would much rather spend hard cash than use credit cards, partly because of the country’s huge, hidden economy. Ovidio Egido, managing director of Spain’s leading credit-card company, Mastercard, says: “Around 80% of private purchases are made in cash, with only 20% going through electronic payment systems such as cards and bank transfers,” Central bank data shows that some 111 billion euros were withdrawn from cash machines in Spain last year with 105bn spent on cash purchases. The figures are in stark contrast with countries such as Sweden Denmark and Finland, where the figure is reversed, or Germany and the UK, where 60% of payments are electronic. Mastercard is looking into the controversy raised by CaixaBank’s decision to charge noncustomers a two-euro commission for using its cash machines. The company insists that the guidelines followed by banks include ensuring that the extra charge is justified, and that they are not charg-

ing twice for the same service. “This no longer happens because they have adapted their information technology systems,” says Egido. The Mastercard chief supports the government’s recent measures to prevent cash payments of more than 3,000 euros, as well as requiring an explanation of payments and transfers of more than 10,000 euros into bank accounts. “In the rest of the European Union, 3,000 euros in cash is considered a large amount,” he says, pointing out that up to 25% of Spanish GDP is made up by ‘the hidden economy’.” Unsurprisingly, Mastercard and other payment companies support greater use of cards, arguing that this is wherethe world’s advanced economies are heading. “Denmark plans to end the use of cash completely,” says Egido. “In Spain, it is now possible to pay at parking meters with credit cards, as well as in taxis. Even a couple of years ago, this was unthinkable. It is clear that this is one way to limit the hidden economy, and this benefits everybody

in society. What’s more, cash costs shops an extra 3.5%. “They might not factor it into their running costs, but it adds up in terms of security, time spent organising change, lost cash, etc.” Egido feels that Spaniards are, perhaps, still fearful of creating a society where financial transactions take place through credit cards or transfers, seeing it in terms of Big Brother. “But if you look at countries like the UK, credit cards are even used to pay out social benefits,” he points out.”These cards cannot be used to buy alcohol or luxury goods. So in this case, the card is a clear help.” At the same time, though, he states that 92% of people in Spain have bank accounts - “although we tend to think everybody has a current account! Many people are unaware that their cards are supported by an international payment network. These systems, particularly Visa and Mastercard, allow users to pay abroad with cards, as well as on the internet. As they have no relationship with the end

customer, but with the intermediary (the bank), they have looked to raise their profile through sponsorship, particularly of sporting events. Following the FIFA bribes scandal, Mastercard has pointed out that it has not sponsored FIFA since 2007, and instead sponsors European organisation UEFA. Mastercard is now introducing payment via smartphone and contactless cards. “These are methods used by few people so far, but the two means are growing rapidly because they are both comfortable and safe,” says Egido, adding that 0.02% of payments are fraudulent. “But that is irrelevant.” Egido praises the digitalisation of Spanish banking, and says that Apple, Google and Paypal represent a danger, and “could become the main suppliers of services, with banks relegated to second place. “It would not be easy, but it is possible,” says the boss of a company which carried out 11 billion transactions between January and March this year, making a profit of more than 2bn euros in that period.

Celebrities compete in a contest of culinary skill. The first week of heats continues as the four remaining celebrities face three more culinary challenges, battling for a place in the semi-finals. The first challenge is a relay invention test. Split into two teams, each team must create a maincourse and a pudding between them. Each team member has 30 minutes to make their contribution to the dishes, but they can’t communicate with one another. Next, the teams are sent out on their first mass catering challenge. They have to make lunch for over 100 members of staff at Legoland in Windsor. The two teams must devise, prepare and serve the lunch, catering for various tastes while creating meat-based, vegetarian and dessert dishes in volume. As the battle for a semi-final place reaches its climax, the four celebrities must now cook a faultless two-course meal.

Amanda explores the story of Marie Duplessis, a highly prized courtesan whose life inspired the play and on which the opera was based, whilst Tom discovers how Verdi, on a visit to Paris with his mistress soprano Giuseppina Strepponi, seized this risqué story for the subject of his new masterpiece. Together Amanda and Tom follow the opera’s journey to London and examine how its incendiary premiere marked an historic moment in which art confronted reality, redefining the role of the opera diva forever. Scenes from Verdi’s masterpiece have been specially recreated for the film in collaboration with Opera North alongside stunning location photography in Venice, Milan, Paris and London.

Sunday 21 June 2015 is the world’s first International Day of Yoga, as declared by the United Nations. It’s a 24-hour worldwide festival of yoga. But why are we marking a multimillion pound industry, embraced by celebrities and footballers alike? BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty - a self-confessed yoga sceptic - delves into the roots of this ancient Indian tradition and discovers that for many Hindus, yoga is a deeply spiritual practice that goes way beyond the sun salutation or downward dog. From a breathtaking early morning class held at the top of London’s Shard, to a training session with Rugby League hulks of The Salford Red Devils; from a manor house donated by a Beatle (where linking to God is a daily pursuit) to yogic breathing on the hilltops of a remote Scottish island, Naga explores the claims of so many yoga advocates that the practice is the ultimate source of health, wholeness and wellbeing. Even Naga’s fellow Breakfast presenter Bill Turnbull comes straight off set to show Naga the yoga moves he practices to make sure he gets a good night’s slee

BBC At War presented by Jonathan Dimbleby BBC2, 21.00 In the second episode, Dimbleby reveals how fears of a crisis in morale at home made popular light entertainment the centrepiece of BBC’s schedules, and how stubborn determination and technical improvisation enabled broadcasting from the heart of the war zone. As the BBC adopted different languages it came to be a powerful force for resistance in Europe: honest reporting of the war over pure propaganda was another battle that had to be won, but it also became a key means of coded communication with resistance groups. Dimbleby tells how the BBC championed the ‘V for Victory’ campaign which spread rapidly across occupied Europe, as the broadcaster began to win the war of words oversees. By D Day, BBC correspondents armed with mini recorders were embedded in army units amidst the action. Richard Dimbleby reported from Hitler’s Berlin hours after its capture and was with the liberators of Belsen, but internal battles continued over what to broadcast, and it was only his threat to resign that caused his unflinching report from the concentration camp to be allowed on air. In the closing months of the war the BBC had achieved such credibility that even the German High Command was relying on it as the only reliable source of information. The modern era of news had begun and just as the world would never be the same – nor would the BBC.

Kevin Mccloud’s Escape to the Wild Channel 4, 19:00

Kevin McCloud travels to Chile, and the foothills of the Andes, to meet a family from south London who’ve quit the daily grind to build a new home in the shadow of an active volcano. Dad Jago was an IT project manager; mum Lucy, a lawyer - but they gave it all up to relocate with their three young children to one of the more remote and inaccessible places in South America. Kevin arrives at the site on horseback to discover that the family are still in the process of constructing their new home. With no formal training, they’re building an earth house with their bare hands, using bags filled with soil and trees from the local forest, which they transport by oxen. Kevin is impressed by the structure but troubled by one key question: why would you choose to live next door to a highly volatile volcano?

The Met: Policing London

19th June - 25th June 2015

M o n day

BBC1, 21.00

Filmed over the course of year, The Met: Policing London follows officers of Britain’s biggest and busiest police service as they deal with life, death, crime and its victims, all across the capital. Gangs are a major problem for police in at least 20 of London’s 32 boroughs. Detectives Stuart McNaughton and Bob Dolce work for Trident, the Met’s specialist gang unit. As some younger boys and girls are increasingly being lured into the gang lifestyle, Bob and Stuart are focused on one of London’s most dangerous gangs, working undercover to take down its leaders and stop the lucrative drug trade thriving on the streets of South London. In North London, wealthy residents of Camden have been plagued by a wave of violent snatch-and-grab thefts by robbers using mopeds to evade police. Suspects are often only in their teens and cops are cautious about chasing the criminals. With public confidence in the police running low because of this, it’s up to Borough Commander Richard Tucker to win back local trust and wipe out the problem. Police Constables Tim Dawes and Steph Mills have been patrolling the streets of Brixton for over 5 years and deal with knife crime on a regular basis. But nothing can prepare them for the shock of a vicious knife attack in broad daylight when it’s up to them to try to save the life of an innocent teenage boy.

Johnny Kingdom’s Wild Exmoor ITV1, 20.00 Winter has arrived, the time of year when the salmon return home from the Atlantic Ocean to lay their eggs in the rivers where they were born. Johnny has been scouring Exmoor looking for them and finally in the tiny village of Brayford, Johnny gets his shots of a large male salmon. It’s also the time of year for the South Molton Fatstock Market, which attracts sheep farmers from all over southwest England keen to demonstrate the quality of their animals. But Johnny’s favourites are the Shire horses and he helps out as one of these huge beasts is fitted with new shoes. During the winter months migrant and domestic birds seek shelter in some of the estuaries on the north Devon coast and Johnny loves the challenge of trying to film them. At the Taw Estuary he finds a Little Egret, Shelduck and a beautiful Curlew, once plentiful on Exmoor but now rarely seen. Before he heads home he visits the coastal town of Porlock to join in the traditional festival of ‘wassailing’. The townsfolk parade through the streets toasting the apple trees with cider and making as much noise as possible to ward off evil spirits. But it wouldn’t be winter on Exmoor without the snow and as the weather turns bad, Johnny heads for the moor and encounters first some hardy Highland cattle, followed by a herd of ponies scraping at the ground for some food under the snow. Exmoor was the first place in Europe to become a Dark Sky Reserve - the absence of artificial light creates some beautiful starry skies and also helps Johnny capture on a night vision camera the first shots he’s ever had of wild boar wallowing in mud. He’s thrilled! And now with winter nearly over, to round off Johnny’s year he joins sheep farmer Jason Toft and helps deliver a lamb. Of course this means that spring is almost here once more, ushering in another new year on Exmoor.

The Bank: A Matter Of Life And Debt BBC2, 21.00

High street banks sit at the very heart of our thorny relationship with money, deciding on our savings, debts, mortgages and business loans - and our hopes and fears. A branch of NatWest in the north of England has opened its doors, giving unprecedented access to the behind-the-scenes workings of one of our most important everyday institutions. Produced in partnership with the Open University, the first episode in this three-part series looks at how this branch is trying to win back the customer trust which was lost after the 2008 financial crisis. Deputy bank manager Claire has 12 weeks to improve the all-important customer service score of her branch. She and her team - complaints handler Anna, mortgage advisor Gary, and Sarah, who sells life insurance at the branch - are desperate to succeed. But with faith in banks at an all-time low, the team know that they have their work cut out. Every customer that visits the Huddersfield branch can be called by the bank for feedback, so every member of Claire’s team is under pressure to make their customers happy; from those like Alan, angry about the service they’ve received, to those such as Tracey, seeking advice on managing their debt. Can Claire and her team persuade the people of Huddersfield that her team is putting the customer first? And is it fair for customers to point the finger at the bank every time? Following the real-life stories of customers and staff at this branch, this episode is a fascinating look at our complicated relationship with money and the bank.

The Interceptor BBC1, 21.00

The UNIT is beginning to make inroads into the criminal organisation and Ash (O-T Fagbenle) is finally doing the kind of work he’s dreamed of - but it’s having an impact on his family life. Phone taps have revealed that a big sum of money is being sent out from Xavier’s dry cleaners on behalf of ‘someone bigger’ and it’s a great lead: the money could take them to its source and therefore one step closer to identifying their Mr Big. Tracking it reveals the existence of a money launderer known as The Accountant (Neil Stuke, pictured), whose latest scheme is to use a traditional and paperless worldwide money transfer system called Hawala. The team home in on The Rays, a family of long-standing honest ‘Hawaladars’ who have lived by a code of honour, until now. Youngest son, Zubin (Hamza Jeetooa), has agreed to launder the money unbeknownst to his father or brother Astin (Sacha Dhawan), a respectable building society manager. But when it’s stolen whilst in Zubin’s care, the Rays are in serious debt to the vicious Accountant and, if he doesn’t get repaid quickly, the punishment will be severe. Zubin’s mistake has led the UNIT deeper into the criminal organisation and Cartwright (Ewan Stewart) is happy to exploit this. But Ash isn’t about to stand by and watch the Rays be sacrificed in the process. Can Ash and the team find a way to save the Rays from themselves, while keeping the money in play and getting a step closer to their ultimate target?

Napoleon BBC2, 21.00

This final episode traces the fall of Napoleon, a key defining moment in global history. Andrew Roberts uncovers the successive mistakes that would eventually led to his downfall. First was Napoleon’s trust in the Tsar of Russia, which proved to be a mistake: the Tsar would betray Napoleon and renege on their agreement. Then, when Napoleon sought revenge by invading Russia in 1812, the military campaign would prove to be a disaster. As Roberts will investigate, Napoleon went on to make some grave, ultimately suicidal, military misjudgements as he strove to defend France against her enemies. Ever since the Revolution had taken place in France in 1789, the monarchist nations of the world were out to destroy Napoleon. At the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 they were granted their ultimate opportunity.

Alex Polizzi: Chefs on Trial

19th June - 25th June 2015

T h u r s day

BBC2, 19:00

Alex Polizzi takes on the difficult challenge of finding head chefs. She continues her mission with Potli, an Indian market restaurant in London’s Hammersmith, whose owners are desperate to find a head chef to help realise their ambition of expanding a restaurant chain. The last three candidates are put through the gruelling hands-on interview process. The tandoor skill test puts chefs immediately under pressure to produce an authentic tandoori chicken. Can Bindi’s infectious enthusiasm and years of home cooking fit into a professional kitchen or will her lack or restaurant know-how be her undoing? Mark is the most experienced candidate but has no professional experience of cooking Indian food - however, maybe his maverick fusion approach could be just what they need. And when it comes to costs, who will be bang on the money? There’s only one place left in the final and the pressure is on.

There are more than nine million dogs living in the UK, but some can’t adapt to our 21st-century lifestyles. Mark Evans and his team take on the cases of dogs struggling with the modern world, tackling outrageous, challenging and shocking examples of dog behaviour. Specially shot surveillance footage shows Labrador Jaydee recycling her own and other dogs’ - waste, and Loki the destructively delinquent pointer trashing her home. Mark and the team continue to provide expert advice and practical tips to help these and other dogs and their owners enjoy happier, healthier lives. Mark also investigates how a dog’s sense of smell - up to a million times more acute than our own - allows a trained sniffer dog to find a drop of his own blood in a field. And K9 Academy trainer Tamsin Durston demonstrates ways of getting to know your dog better, and how to deal with dogs that don’t want to share.

What’s On in Tenerife

Tenerife Opera 2015. Ana Bolena Anna Bolena is the first work of Donizetti’s Queens’ Trilogy and is the essence of the dramatic bel canto that the composer would later repeat in Roberto Devereux, María Estuardo and, particularly, Lucia di Lammermoor. Donizetti applied all his talent to the psychological portrayal of his characters in this delightfully-melodic piece. The all-star cast features Mariella Devia (one of the greatest bel canto sopranos of the last 40 years) in the leading role, Tenerife’s international tenor, Celso Albelo, and mezzo-soprano and Alessandra Volpe, who returns to Ópera de Tenerife after her tremendous success last season in Nabucco.

Entertainment

19th June - 25th June 2015

By Jamie Droo OVER the last 30 years, the rise in popularity of the phenomenon of karaoke has made it possible for more people to be able to take to the stage and show off their ability to sing. For some, it is just a pastime and a way to have fun; for others it’s a yearning to be on stage. But neither of these reasons is a measure of an individual’s talent. Before karaoke, you could only see singers performing in live music venues. They would carry a case full of sheet music containing their set. There were generally a minimum of two resident musicians per venue: a drummer and a keyboard player. The vocalist would be expected to have an understanding of the music the musicians were expected to read and play, which also made the singers musicians, their instrument being the voice. So, 30 years ago, there would not be so much of a variety of voices on stage at live music venues - only those who had chosen to be a professional singer. But what is it that makes a good singer? Well, it’s certainly not just down to the individual who has chosen this occupation because, back in the day,

37 CW

Nik sings from perfect page!

there were some awful acts as well as exceptional ones. Confidence and selfbelief are so important in any performing art, but delusion is also rife in showbiz types. Some believe they are better than they actually are, and woe betides anyone who would attempt to criticise them. Usually the most talented are equally the most humble - and the least self-indulgent. This week, I am writing about a vocalist who is described in the previous sentence. Last Saturday, I had the great pleasure of watching Nik Page at the Brahms & Liste showbar on the strip known as Parque de la

Paz. The bar is owned by the Feddon family, who have been presenting the Island’s finest acts for years. Brothers Ben, who asked me to refer to him as “Hunky Ben,” and Noel, are in charge of the day-to-day running of the venue, while Ian Sladen, better known as Dion, is resident host. The first time I saw him was about 12 years ago in a bar called The Wigan Pier, later renamed The Wigan Arms. I became an instant fan. Nik has the complete voice, in my opinion. His vocal range is huge, his pitching impeccable and his tone addictive. He has the most animated way of per-

forming every song. This could be because he has worked in West End theatre productions, including one of the longest-running shows in West End history, Les Miserables, where a song is not only sung but acted and performed with passion. He applies this really well throughout his solo show, singing a diverse range of songs which display his vocal ability. He was singing Michael Buble’s massive hit, I Just Haven’t Met You Yet, as I got there. It has been done to death on the karaoke nights around Tenerife, but Nik somehow sings it in such a way that it sounds better than you’ve ever heard it. He then went on to sing Michael Jackson’s She’s Out Of My Life and again, it was like the first time I had heard it. The tracks he uses for his show have been custom-made and studio-processed, so the quality of his backing matches the quality of his voice. Nik maintains this standard throughout, and drops in a unique and incredible medley of songs from Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. And that’s when you really hear his endless range. Valli is known for his powerful falsetto range, and I have never heard any singer gracing these shores get anywhere near this standard - apart from Nik!

After impressing the audience with this rare ability, I asked myself: “What’s he gonna do next?” A complete change of direction was on the cards, and a huge, powerful, Gene Pitney ballad called I’m Gonna Be Strong preceded the performance of the night for me. Nik’s rendition of Bring Him Home from Les Mis was truly jawdropping. The control he possesses is amazing. He sustains the softer notes while maintaining his tone with a perfect vibrato to close the phrases. In a bar like this, there are always people talking during the act, but not on Saturday. As Nik delivered the last line of the song, all eyes were on the stage, and not a soul was doing anything other than sitting or standing in total appreciation of this so-talented singer. If you like a quality voice and one which can be applied to a wide range of songs, then Nik Page is an absolute must. He defines the word outstanding. There are not many singers of this calibre on the Island and the few that are here are well worth a visit. Dominic James, lead male vocalist in The Sound of Musicals at Showtime, also performs a solo show called Pop to Opera. He is also an exceptional singer and should be sought by those who love a good voice. Jeff Leyton, who also performs at The Brahms & Liste,

is another name I should mention while writing about this kind of standard. Jeff, like Nik, has also performed in the West End, and he has a wealth of experience in so many big-production shows, including Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon and Cats. I reviewed Elaine Alexander just a few weeks ago, but as the singers I have already mentioned are all male, I must mention Elaine to maintain a little equilibrium. She performs her solo shows in bars and hotels, yet they are in stark contrast to one another. Her hotel show involves more of what I have been writing about with the male singers, and contains songs from musicals and shows off this lady’s ability to perform songs that are rarely attempted but totally appreciated by her audience. As I am writing, I keep thinking of other singers who really should be mentioned, too, but I am running out of space and I can only pledge to review their talent in the forthcoming weeks. Tenerife has such diverse talent and so many artistes of varying standards, but all of them do a fabulous job every night. If the talent here were to be measured in grains of sand, we would need an entire desert to show off what we have.

Spain’s fine-dining success GIRONA’S El Celler eatery won top prize at the prestigious 2015 World’s 50 Best Restaurant awards, held at London’s Guildhall.

It headed the list of seven Spanish restaurants featuring in the roll of honour - more than any country. El Celler pipped Italy’s Osteria Francescana, in Modena, for the No.1 spot, with last year’s winner, Copenhagen’s Noma, pushed down to third. It’s head chef Joan Roca i Fontane, receiving the award to a standing ovation, dedicated the prize to those around him, “This success is also for our family,” he said. “Thanks family for your patience, for our wives, our kids, also our team - the best team in the world.”

Other Spanish fine-diners in the top 50 were: Murgaritz, in San Sebastian, which held on to sixth; Asador Etxebarri (Biscay), this year’s highest climber at 13th; Arzak, also in San Sebastian, 17th; Azurmendi, near Bilbao, 19th and in 39th spot was Quique Dacosta, in Denia, and at 42nd was Tickets, in Barcelona. Helene Darroze, chef at the Connaught in London, was crowned world’s best female chef,

while the Japanese-inspired Sepia Restaurant in Sydney was named “one to watch”. And the Lifetime Achievement award went to Daniel Boulud. The awards, organised by UK-based Restaurant Magazine and sponsored by Italian drinks manufacturers San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, are seen as highly influential in the fine-dining industry. Noma’s first win in 2010 is credited with catapulting the restau-

rant to international stardom, resulting in enough booking requests to fill its tables for years. But the incredible power wielded by the list has also made it the target of criticism, most recently via a petition launched by Occupy50Best, a “trio of angry food-spotters in France”. It calls on the event’s corporate sponsors to join a boycott to press organisers into making it more professional. The petition insists it

has created a system that allows for self-promotion by chef-judges and, in the main, ignores women. Among the 360-plus signatories gathered before to the award ceremony were the names of dozens of chefs, including Joel Robuchon, the Frenchman who commands a string of restaurants - some of which have appeared on the list. But William Drew, the organisation’s head, said in a statement: “We

respect their right to express their opinions, even though we obviously don’t agree with them.” He also stressed that the results were compiled from an “independent” voting panel of 1,000 judges, who were subject to adjudication. Next year’s 50 Best ceremony will, for the first time, take place in New York, which, said organisers, would make the event “truly global”. 10 OF THE BEST 1. El Celler de Can Roca (Girona, Spain) 2. Osteria Francescana (Modena, Italy) 3. Noma (Copenhagen) 4. Central (Lima) 5. Eleven Madison Park (New York City) 6. Mugartiz (San Sebastian, Spain 7. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (London) 8. 19th June - 25th June 2015

By Vanessa Vee This week I was invited to Music Hall Tavern at their new home in Vivo, Playa de Las Americas.

The MHT group have been performing in Lanzarote for 20 years and, after branching out to Fuerteventura in 2008, they then took Gran Canaria and Tenerife by storm in 2011. Two years later, they were signed to appear at Blackpool Grand Theatre for a “One Night Only” spectacular. It sold so well that they were booked to appear on a National UK Theatre tour, which saw the cast perform 18 shows around the UK. This proved so successful that in 2014, they embarked on a second British tour, performing at 29 venues in virtually every county. In previous years, MHT in Tenerife always appeared at the Castillo San Miguel Annex, which catered for around 400 people. At Vivo, 120 is the maximum, giving it much more of an intimate feel. We were greeted at the door by some of the artistes and had our photos taken with them. We were then shown to our table by our friendly Maitre d’, who took our orders for drinks once we were comfortable. At MHT, you can upgrade to all-inclusive,

In the swing with this colourful Music Hall

where 20 euros per head will keep your thirst at bay all night long! However, the drinks are reasonably priced if you decide not to take this option. Shortly afterwards, the glamorous Mrs T - star of the show - appeared on stage to tell us our food would be served shortly. Our starter was a vegetable soup served with a bread roll. This was followed by a traditional roast dinner: turkey, mashed potato, roast potato, vegetables and gravy - there was even some cranberry sauce on the table! For vegetarians, there is a choice of pasta or sautéed vegetables. Children can choose between chicken nuggets with chips, or have the same meal as the adults. People with allergies can also be catered for as long as they give notification when booking. And if you have any room left, there is icecream for dessert. The opening song was Happy, and it was clear this was going to be an enjoyable, fun evening. We were introduced to the rest of the cast and, from then on, the audience were heavily involved in all parts of the show. The younger guests are also entertained, with some excerpts from Frozen (a very

convincing Elsa!) and Happy Feet. Some people would say a drag show is not suitable for children, but I disagree. I looked around and saw some of the children’s faces. They they were thoroughly enjoying the evening, singing and clapping along to the songs they knew. After a short break, when we were invited to buy raffle tickets, the cast were back on stage with lots of different characters, including the girls from Morrisons Supermarket (this was slightly lost on my Lithuanian pal!). There was also a sketch in which Mrs T sang a little ditty with rhyming that might have given a slight cause for concern, especially with the youngsters there. But it was cleverly written. Once the raffle was drawn, the night came to a close with a tribute to the Spice Girls and a fantastic, vibrant performance of Uptown Funk, which really got people off their seats and dancing in the aisles. All in all it was a fantastic night, and I can’t wait to see it again. Music Hall Tavern is currently performing four nights a week - Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The cost, including the show and three-course dinner, is 35 euros per adult and 25 euros per child.

WHEN it comes down to curls, there’s only one way to go with them and that’s BIG! Forget your spirals or anything too tight because curls are back - in a more natural way.

If you’re recreating the look at home, there’s a simple way to get that smooth, bouncy, salon look without stressing about it. First of all, start off with hair that’s not too clean (not freshly washed), damp down with a water spray then smooth through some Argan oil. But not too much as this will make the curls drop. Apply over this a firm mousse or blo-dry cream. Dry your hair in medium sections with a very large ceramic brush to smooth out any frizzes. Heat up a large ceramic tong - the barrel should be at least two inches in diameter. This should also be ceramic as it holds the heat better and is kinder to your hair. Spritz your hair with a heat-defence spray then, taking wide sections starting underneath your hair, tong it all the way up to the roots. It doesn’t matter if you just want the curl halfway down because the curls will drop later as you style it. As you finish the last

section, spray your hair with a gel spray and wait a few moments for the hair to cool down. Once cooled, tip your head upside down! You now have two choices. If you want very loose waves, brush the hair through with a flatbrush from roots to tip. For big curls, drag your fingers through to loosen the curls. After both procedures, spray again with gel spray. To place your hair into position, run

through a little more Argan oil and set into place with another small spray. Your curls should then last you all night, as long as it’s not too humid. Try not to keep touching your hair because this will destroy the curls/waves. It’s worth taking your time with this because when it is done correctly, the curls should still look good the next day - even if you’re just going to fasten it up.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who contributed to the Sunday entertainment staged by the Arona Lions Club of Las Galletas and Costa del Silencio. It was a great success and a lovely day was had by all at the Rendezvous Bistro and Bar at the Winter Gardens, on Golf del Sur. Entertainers Storm Duo, Nicky Paul, Kerry Railton, Simon King, Steve Tyler, Soul Commitments, Suzie Moore, Chrissy Dean

and Uproar, all giving up their free time, went down really well. The club would also like to thank the following people for their Raffle and Auction donations: Euromeats, Freebird, Suncare, Showtime, Chilli Farm, Mr and Mrs Scott, who donated a set of golf clubs, plus a few anonymous vouchers. Finally, a massive thanks to the staff at the venue who, as always, looked after us brilliantly.

Paint your wagon! THE Treehouse Bar & Grill at Chayofa has just made its latest acquisition, adding to the amazing array of memorabilia amassed over recent years. This latest find is a beautifully-restored, 19th Century, horsedrawn wagon, which takes pride of placeby the bar’s entrance. Like many of the decorative items added by owner Simon McLachlan, this latest item was supplied by local antique centre Aladdin’s Cave. Earlier this year, Simon purchased an Eastonia Player Grand

Piano, dating from the turn of the last century, and has incorporated it as a back-of-the-bar feature. This was also sourced at Aladdin’s Cave, as were many of the interior design elements on display - even down to the English-style Treehouse pub sign. Simon’s next project is to create a chill-out decked area for the terrace, which will be up and running in the next month. So whether you are a Treehouse regular or a new face, it will certainly be the place to be, and be seen, this summer.

By Monica Dyson I was quite excited this week when I walked into the Asda supermarket near my home here in the UK to be greeted by GNorman, GNorma, GNoah and GNora, members of an extremely large, garden ornament, gnome family.

It’s good to know that the garden gnome is very much alive and well, but who on earth buys them, I asked myself? Well, it seems that the British fascination for these little people has never gone away. And even at prices exceeding £20, they all may be re-located to good homes! Gnone, as it were! Garden gnomes have always been popular ornaments, and there are various theories about the origin of the “gnome” name. Some think it is from the Latin Gnomus or Greek Gnosis, meaning knowledge, or Genomos, meaning earthdweller. Webster’s dictionary certainly believes the name is derived from Gignoskein, which is ‘to know’. Legend has it that gnomes, tired of their frequent wars with goblins, went off to look for a better life, often living under stones in the gardens of dumb people, or lived in burrows like hobbits. They were first manufactured in Germany by Griebel and Heissner in the early 1800s, and were made of terracotta. They became soughtafter in Britain around the Forties, although had they some competition in later years from cheap imitations from the Czech Republic and Poland. The first gnomes really caught the imagination of the British people who wanted to inject a bit of fun into gardening after years of ravaging by air-raid shelters and dig-

Matter of Elf & Safety!

for-victory campaigns. Although during the Sixties and Seventies they were manufactured in lightweight plastic materials, they never lost their traditional designs which were, for the most part, of gnomes engaged in masculine pursuits like fishing and snoozing or dressed in football strips, a style which was popular during the Seventies. There seems to be three categories of gnomes: the worker gnome, who often carries a shovel; the leisure gnome, who smokes a pipe when relaxing, and the culture gnome, who plays a musical instrument. All, for the most part, are predominately male! They are traditionally a symbol of good luck and are said to provide protection of buried treasure, although there is no evidence that there’s much of that around. And possibly, more importantly, to watch over crops and livestock. It is widely believed by gnome enthusiasts that they possess supernatural powers, come out at night, play in the garden and can see into the future. It is unsure whether anyone has ever actually seen or spoken to a gnome. There is even a dictionary entry for ‘Gnoming’ which is the act of stealing garden gnomes recklessly. The most serious on record was in Coronation Street when a garden gnome named Arthur became a pawn in a game of jealousy and bitterness between Derek, Mavis and Norris in 1995. Arthur who lived happily in the garden of the Wiltons with his p a r t n e r,

Guinevere, mysteriously disappeared but sent postcards home - until Norris was unveiled as the culprit! In France, there is a ‘Front des nains de jardins’ movement which, in one year alone, stole over 150 garden gnomes to ‘liberate’ them. Some people have too much time on their hands! They were protesting about gnomes being captured and forced into slave labour in domestic gardens. The question of whether to ‘gnome’ or not to ‘gnome’ divides the gardening world. People either love them or hate them. There is, however, many gnome enthusiasts and even an International Gnome Club, which issues newsletters for its readers. I’m not sure if any of its members are gnomes! However, gnomes are subject to a great deal of snobbery. For the past 100 years, gnomes were banned from the recently-held Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show, on the grounds that they are of working-class origin, are tacky, and are suitable for suburban gardens only. Who do these people think they are? But for the 2013 show, the ban was lifted for a charity event, with celebrities like Dame Judi Dench and Sir Elton John painting one of the small people for a charity auction. H o p e f u l l y, gnomes are back, al-

though it is rumoured that for years, people have been smuggling them into the show and leaving them underneath bushes! Such is the affection of many people towards gnomes that there are tourist attractions devoted totally to all things gnome. The ‘Gnome Reserve’ in Devon, which promises 100% wonder and magic, issues visitors with gnome hats and fishing rods, while ‘Gnomes for You’ is a popular website where you can purchase gnomes in every shape and size possible. There is even a number of Facebook pages where people who are passionate about gnomes can share their enthusiasm. And a year or so ago in Wales, a grieving family lined the route of the cortege carrying their mother, with her precious collection of garden gnomes. However, they were made to remove them by the local coun- cil on the grounds o f “elf and safety!”

K9 news and views

We’ve got a Max factor! SOME of our supporters will remember Dutch student Max Kater, who spent two months at the kennels last autumn.

Max, training to be a vet, was here on a work placement, gaining valuable, hands-on experience in a kennel environment. He spent some days out with a local veterinary practice, but most of his time involved the hard slog of cleaning the kennels. On his return to college in Holland to continue his studies, he mentioned that it was such a positive learning curve at the kennels. Earlier this year another student, a girl called Eef, spent three months with us, seeking valuable experience of kennel management in the capable hands of K9 kennel manager Hazel Eames. And, just like Max, she carried out all the dirty jobs without batting an eyelid! Such is the success of this venture, and the great rapport built between the veterinary college in Holland and K9, that a further four students are coming over in September for a couple of months. Like their predecessors, they will cycle to the kennels from their base at Parque de la Reina, thankful that they can enjoy a downhill ride at the end of the shift! New homes for strays It is the time of year when sadly, more and more dogs are being dumped. Some dogowners let the dogs out to fend for themselves when they go away on holiday. The majority are not micro-chipped, so there is little likelihood of them being reunited with their owners. Many of them struggle to cope in a kennel environment after being part of a family. There are several cuties and many macho dogs, so there is bound to some dog suitable for you if

you are looking for an addition to your family. The kennels are open every day from 11am-2pm, so please come along and have a look. Driver wanted urgently The K9 shop in Alcala continues to be the refuge’s life support, but we have a problem. We are in desperate need of someone physically fit to drive our transit van, which is based in Alcala. We collect donated goods from all areas between The Golfs and Los Gigantes. A full, clean, driving licence is essential. Hours to be negotiated but, possibly, a couple of half-days each week. Further info from k9mikey@gmail.com or 670 841 925 Our Xmas dinner The annual K9 preChristmas Dinner has been booked for Saturday, 12th December, at La Ceuva, in Aldea Blanco - the same venue as last year. It attracted 150 guests, and this year’s 20-euro tickets, including drinks with the meal, go on sale from 1st September, when the evening’s entertainment will have been finalised. Help our volunteers We are looking for a venue in the Los Cristianos area to hold the annual “Thank You” afternoon for our volunteers and supporters. For many years this popular outing was at The Heritage Bar but, sadly, it has now closed. Once we have a venue, we hope to stage the event in late September or early October. Grateful thanks Many thanks to everyone who supports the K9 refuge in particular, and not forgetting those who also assist Live Arico Paws, Cats Welfare and the other rescue centres.

Classic night for everyone A BIG thank-you to the British School of Music’s classical pianists, and singers Alberto and Victoria - the duo Opera Prima - who entertained us last Friday at Los Cristianos Cultural Centre.

It was an inspirational, enjoyable evening, with all the young participants donating their time and talent to help raise funds for our refuge dogs. The musical talent on show was amazing and the opera singers were a joy to hear and see. A superb night was had by all. Accion also had a busy Saturday when we joined forces with Arona to celebrate “Arona En Colores” in Las Galletas. This was a fun day, aimed at spreading the word about animal welfare. It also gave the children a chance to be involved in many activities, and to meet some of the refuge’s gorgeous dogs and puppies. Reward their patience Some of our dogs have spent many years in the refuge, and maybe you have a little spare time and would like to exercise one - or even adopt one. There are so many animals here who would love a walk and some human companionship - apart from the staff, of course - for an hour or two. Call 922 778 630 for more information. Opening hours We are open to the public on Mondays, Tu e s d a y s , T h u r s d a y s and Fridays between 2-5pm, and on Saturdays from 1-4pm. The refuge is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and on Public Holidays. Donations welcome Please note that Accion del Sol does not charge for adoptions, and every animal is fully passported , microchipped, inoculated, sterilised and has a full bill of health before leaving the refuge. But

donations towards the day-to-day running of the refuge are much appreciated Where to find us The refuge is situated at Granadilla’s Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER, the ecological park which houses the windmills.

En Pie’s ‘crazy’ fund-raiser

THE Canarian Mental Health Foundation En Pié - which means to take a stand - is a local initiative formed to improve the quality of life of those affected by mental illnesses.

The charity was originally started by family members to provide a forum for support for others going through the same thing. Apart from employing people affected by severe mental problems, carrying out quality of life projects, giving talks in schools and colleges and campaigning against stigma, the Foundation is dedicat-

ed to organising fund and awareness-raising events on the Island. These provide funding for En Pie’s activities, highlighting the Foundation’s plight in the hope of involving the general public. The Helping Hands in Tenerife charity, set up to help less-fortunate children in Tenerife, is now collaborating with En Pie.

Dog of the week Boo came to us several months ago, suffering from mange so severe that he had lost 80% of his body hair, and his skin was cracked and bleeding. The poor animal, in need of a clean, dust-

free place to live and daily treatment, was fortunate to find foster mum Alma and her family … and just look at him now! Boo’s hair is growing back and you would not recognise him. The young Doberman is now ready to go to his forever home. He is loving and adores kids. But he has lots of energy, so be ready for long, long walks unless you have a massive finca. We are situated at Golf Park, on the loop road before the lottery kiosk and we’re open 10am-4pm, Monday to Saturday. We also have shops in Los Cristianos, Calle Revron near Churchills Bar, and San Eugenio opposite Hotel La Nina by Amandas bar at las Carabelas complex. Both shops open from 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday, and until 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. Have a browse, bag a bargain and help the animals.

Helping Hands also funds equipment and activities at Granadilla’s Guardyl Children Centre and the CEE disabled school at Guargacho. Much fun was had on the “Crazy about Walking” charity hike on 6th June. Over 80 participants came together to walk down from Santiago del Teide to Los Gigantes in aid of En Pié and Helping Hands. The picturesque stroll was punctuated by various welcome stops offering breakfast, a wide spread of Canarian nibbles and a cheeky drop of vino. It ended with a celebration at Los Gigantes harbour, accompanied by live music from, resident artists, hot Canarian food and a superb raffle, as well as much merry-making into the night. The En Pié foundation aims to integrate people with mental health problems into society,

and many of their service users enjoyed the event and mixing in. A whopping total of 4,600 euros was raised, which will go towards the employment of some of their team, as well as funding their summer group activities. En Pié officials express their gratitude for all the welcome support received, which enables them to continue their endeavours. The Foundation’s next big En Pie event is its

third annual Masca hike-and-sea kayak event on Saturday, 10th October, to celebrate World Mental Health Day. To take part in this wonderful experience and challenge yourself to complete the hike down to Masca beach, with an option to row your way back to Los Gigantes in kayaks for the infamous closing party, contact Lisa on 636 271 853 or eventos@ enpie.org or check their website www.enpie.org

By Val Sainsbury IT is widely assumed that cervical cancer is a young woman’s disease, yet 50% of deaths occur in the over-65s, who appear to ignore vital screening.

A British Medical Journal report argues that the age limit for cervical screening should be raised to 70, and older women should be targeted in health campaigns. Between 2010 and 2012, there was an average of 449 deaths from the cancer in over-65s and just seven in under-25s. And the BMJ report. And the report says the number of older women affected is set to increase. From 60-64, just 72% of women in England in 2013 had been screened in the previous five years. This compares with 82% of 50 to the 50-54 age bracket, and 76% of those aged 5559. Cervical screening is estimated to save 4,500 lives in England each

year. Yet though the cancer is most common in those under 35, it continues to affect women of all ages. Lead report author Dr Sue Sherman, senior lecturer in psychology at Keele University, said the figures suggested that older women were not getting themselves screened to prevent the cancer. And Prof Julietta Patnick, Director of NHS cancer screening, added: “This has become a significant contributor to the number contracting the disease.” She said that attention on younger women - including the 2009 death of TV celebrity Jade Goody at the age of 27 - had made women think of cervical cancer as a younger woman’s disease. There has also been a campaign to lower the age of screening from 25 in England after the death of a number of young women from the disease. Yet 20% of new diagnoses are carried out in the over-65s. “We need to change the perception of cervical cancer so it is thought of just like breast and bowel can-

cer - that it can affect women well into old age,” said Prof Patnick. The report found that women who had been tested regularly between the ages of 50 and 64 had “a relatively low risk” of getting the disease in the next 20 years. But women who had not been screened during this time increased their risk considerably. Dr Sherman said: “Regular screenings have the potential to catch the disease early and reduce the number of victims dramatically.” The NHS cervical screening programme in England, Wales and Northern Ireland stops sending invitations for cervical screening when women reach 65, although they can re -

quest to be screened after that. In Scotland, women be-

tween the ages of 20 and 60 are screened, but the age limit will come into line with England’s programme next

April. Prof Patnick said: “The natural history of cervical cancer means it is unlikely that women of 65 and over, who have been screened regularly and discharged from the programme, will go on to develop the disease. “If a woman over 65 has any concerns about her cervical health, she should contact her GP at the earliest opportunity.” Robert Music, chief executive of Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, said there was an urgent need to increase survival rates for women in this age group. He said some women believed that because they had been celibate for several years, they did not consider themselves to be at risk. “We remind all women that HPV is very common and can lie dormant for long periods, and that the best way of reducing one’s risk of cervical cancer is to attend screening promptly while eligible,” he added.

OUR FASHION LEGENDS By Carl Pattison

THERE are many items in our wardrobes which simply wouldn’t exist without the skill and creativity of fashion designers.

You may look at a runway show and think,”Who’s going to wear that”? Or, “What’s this got to do with me”? Well, as you see these sometimes weird and wonderful items being strutted down the runway, just think how boring it would be to see average-looking garments being shown, day in and day out? This is why we have designers - to create not what you might wear this year but in years to come as well. In my list of Iconic

Pieces, there are items used daily all over the world, yet we forget they are part of our staple, fashion wardrobe. The bikini was invented by a Frenchman called Louis Reard back in 1946. He started a major scandal over his daring, two-piece swimsuit, yet today it’s considered quite normal for a woman to be seen in one.

High-heels or stilettos, originally worn by men, became popular in the Fifties, but they come from the 16th century as horse-riding boots. Today, most women own a small collection and wouldn’t be seen on a night out without them. The classic leather jacket was invented for pilots, but it quickly became a cult item to own if you wanted to look “cool”. Marlon Brando, John Travolta and the legendary Michael Jackson all brought to us their versions of this timeless jacket. The little black dress was another groundbreaking fashion statement, originally intended for funeral wear. But it has now earned its place in the fashion hall of fame, thanks to Coco Chanel.

As have sunglasses, designed by Rayban to protect the eyes of fighter pilots. Now, though, they have become a billion-dollar industry, marketed by all the major designers. So the next time you

see a fashion show or flip the pages of a glossy magazine, give thanks the design and ingenuity of the people who put in the work to create such pieces … without which our world would be a duller place.

Get kids moving! By Nico Gil

of Activate Sports Club

FOR all the awards or claims to fame of which the Canaries can be proud - Europe’s sunniest region, most popular tourist destination, etc. - we should all be ashamed of one particular title.

We have the highest level of childhood obesity in Europe! Ironic as it seems for a place people often look to as an example of a healthy way of life, Spain in general holds the unappealing title of being home to Europe’s most overweight children.

Worse still, the Canaries has become the autonomous region with the highest rates in the country: a terrifying 49,6% of kids in the Canaries are overweight or obese. Firstly, let’s get one thing straight. Parents are not only failing their children, because they are also putting their lives in danger by not caring enough for their diet, exercise levels and overall health. Schools are also to blame with their vending machines and insufficient education when it comes to eating well. And let’s not forget that in many cases, especially during times of economic crisis, calorie-laden junk food costs far less than fresh fruit and vegetables, which is also criminal. A future generation made up of obese children is a worrying thought. Excuses aside - too busy to cook or full-time job, say - par-

ents have a duty to ensure their children are as fit and healthy as possible. I’d like to think this is also what they want for their kids, but I’ve often seen cases that make me wonder. There is a long list of potential physical, emotional and social

effects - all negative linked to being severely overweight or obese. From not being able to run around and play games with classmates, to low self-esteem and, it goes without saying, a much greater risk of childhood diabetes, heart problems and respiratory problems

such as asthma. The ideal scenario is to ensure your children/ grandchildren don’t end up severely overweight or obese in the first place. This really isn’t complicated to achieve. We live in one of the best places in the world to encourage children to lead active lifestyles. Get them outside, running around, playing at the park or swimming. The options are endless. All these activities burn calories and will help keep them within a healthy weight range. Sitting with an iPad, watching TV or playing on the computer will not. Increase the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables in their diet (maybe make it more interesting by peeling and chopping it into shapes). And, in general, make sure you prepare meals from scratch rather than relying on industrial, chemical-filled

packet foods which have no nutritional value. As well as the kids, you will also feel much better eating these items. If you have overweight children, don’t be too drastic with their dietary changes. You need to be particularly careful that they don’t feel they are being punished. Subtle changes, such as making healthy eating fun and effortless and, above all, physical activity, is the way forward. Kids, naturally love to play. They won’t even see it as exercise. Choose fun activities such as volleyball, football, cycling or even newer ideas like Zumba kids or capoeira (a Brazilian martial art combining elements of dance, acrobatics and music). Above all, educate your children about their most precious gift: their body and their health.

By Roscoe THE man who bleeds CD Tenerife sensationally quit the club yesterday (Thursday) in a move that asks serious questions about the future of the President and the Director of Football.

On Tuesday, Atromitos launched a shock move for Vitolo, 12 months after failing to keep him in Greece. They offered him a two-year deal said to be worth double his current 200,000-euro-a-year salary, an option of an extra year and the lure of Europa League football. Some 24 hours later, Vitolo met with Tenerife DOF Alfonso Serrano and in under 60 minutes, it was confirmed that he would be moving back to Greece. Vitolo has made it public that the move has nothing to do with money. At 31 he returned to Santa Cruz, turning down big-money offers out of his love for the club. He has two CDT tattoos on his body and his family are settled. So what happened at that meeting? Vitolo claims he did not want to break his contract, which had a year to run, and Serrano says he didn’t want to stand in the players way. It doesn’t add up. Also, why is he leaving on a free transfer? Even at 31, Vitolo is worth something and, since his contract was worth 200,000 euros, that should have been a starting point. In a nutshell, Tenerife have given away their captain, one of their best players and a local idol. Why? The news came along with the club revealing that five youngsters, who were playing out on loan last year, will all be part of the senior squad this year. They are Nano (Hospitalet), Jairo (Real Murcia),

19th June - 25th June 2015

Captain Vitolo quits Tenerife

Abel Suárez (La Roda), Alberto Jimenez (Valencia Mestalla) and Angel Galván (Racing de Ferrol). Alberto is the interesting one as Valencia had an option to buy him for two million euros, which they have decided to not take up. Maybe the club thought they could use Vitolo’s wages a better way? Whatever the reason, the fans are furious. Meanwhile, all the loan signings from last season have left. Iker Guarrotxena and Unai Albizua have returned to Athletic Bilbao, but the latter may return. He has already been released by his parent club and Tenerife have spoken with his agent. It is understood that CDT have tabled the best offer, but Unai is keen to remain in the north of Spain. Juan Carlos has gone back to Deportivo but again, he could return. The 24-year-old did okay and is out of contract at La Coruna. Abdon Prats has returned to Mallorca, while Uruguyan forwards Maxi Perez and Diego Ifran have also departed. They both did reasonably well in

spells. Maxi will return to South America and has had a few decent offers. Ifran has a couple of options, and the smart money is on a move to Mexico. Ricardo has re-signed for another season, but on less money, while Aridane will be allowed to leave. And the club have finally fixed a deal for goalie Dani Hernandez. Terms have been agreed on a three-year contract, which will be inked once he returns

from the Copa America. Cristo Martin, as we reported last week, has been released - and he is not very happy about it! He said this week: “It hurts because it is the club of my land, but I leave with my head held high. “I have given everything and above for the best fans, who have treated me great. From now on, I will be a fan of Tenerife rather than a player. “I had one meeting

with the club and they just told me they did not want me any more. I did not talk much, but I repeat that I’m going with my head high. Football does not end here, and now I seek the best choice for me and my family.” He added: “The President was always good to me and I thank him and a few other people in the club, but I will not say anything about anyone in particular. And there has not been any problem. I enjoyed three spectacular years and leave with friends and no enemies.” As for where he goes, Cristo was keeping his cards close to his chest. “I still have a lot of football to play and I divert all future matters to my agent,” he said. “I will go where I am valued.” Also leaving is Victor Garcia. He was brought in on a junior contract from Prats but has hardly featured. He did notch one goal against Valladolid in February and he is dropping down a league. He joins La Palma’s Mensajero, where he may have a few familiar faces alongside him in the red jersey next season. A couple of the

B team players are expected to be loaned across the water. As you would expect, Tenerife have been linked with a few players, most notably Chuli. He hit 11 goals since joining Leganes on loan in January after turning Tenerife down saying he didn’t fancy a relegation battle. Now, though, it seems he is happy to come here. His parent club Real Betis are happy to sell him for half-a-million euros, which is surely out of CDT’s budget. They haven’t actually bought a player since Nino joined from Levante for 600,000 euros in 2008. A few weeks ago, the UK press were linking him with a move to Swansea in the Premier League. Chuli could be sent out on loan again, which would make sense for Tenerife, and they do have good relations with Real Betis. Another player who could join is Victor Mongli. The 22-yearold centre-back had a decent season at Alcoyano, where they just missed out on the playoffs in 2B. He is out of contract and keen to move to Santa Cruz.

Zaragoza’s Real miracle If a week is a long time in politics. it is a lifetime in football - especially in the second tier of Spanish football. As regular readers know, Girona were just a few seconds away from a first-ever La Liga promotion a week ago, yet now they are planning for another season in the league below. In the play-offs, they went to 6th-place Real Zaragoza and won 3-0. It could have been more. It was the perfect response to the automatic-promotion disappointment. The second leg a few days

later was just a formality. Or so we all thought. Brazilian youngster Willian netted an early penalty for Zaragoza to get the nerves jangling, and when he added a second on 35 minutes, the tie was alive. Just before half-time, Girona fell asleep at the back and Leandro Cabrera headed in from a corner to level the tie. The Argentine defender went nuts and was booked for the celebration. For the second time in a week, Girona fans were stunned into silence. The second half saw Zaragoza in full

flow and it was no surprise when Fernandez made it 4-0 on the night. Girona now needed two goals, and they pulled one back through former Tenerife player Aday with 15 minutes to go. Both sides squandered late chances as Girona suffered another devastating blow. Zaragoza moved into the final with Las Palmas on Wednesday night and were soon on the back foot. Jonathan Viera has been in fine form recently and he gave the visitors the lead on 20 minutes.

But Zaragoza, roared on by their biggest crowd of the season, got back into the match. Diego Rico levelled just before the break and Pedro gave them the lead just afterwards. They poured forward and got a crucial third goal, again through that kid Willian. It sets up the second leg in Gran Canaria beautifully. Exactly a year to the day after Las Palmas were denied promotion in the last minute by Cordoba, will lightning strike twice with Zaragoza on Sunday?

Tenerife-based boxer is reaching for the stars

Let’s dig it for Yigit! EL GYM, the Las Chafiras-based gymnasium, is nurturing a young professional boxer who could go all the way, according to experts.

Anthony Yigit (far right), defends his WBC Baltic light-welterweight title in Copenhagen tomorrow (Saturday) against Britain’s Tony Owen, with one eye on a shot for the European Union crown - a stepping-stone to the big time. And his training partner, Spanish light-heavyweight champion Adasat Rodriguez, is preparing for a crack at the European Union title in France on 3rd July. Sweden’s 23-year-old Yigit, now based permanently in Tenerife, has high hopes of boosting his 13-0-1 unbeaten record (his first professional fight was drawn), but he is aware that he has a long way to go. Yigit and Rodriguez are both coached by Vassili Boguslavsky,

once an accomplished Polish boxer and current coach to the Sweden’s Olympic team. Boguslavsky, who has a special bond with Yigit says: “Anthony has been with me since he was 12, and I have always kept his feet firmly on the ground. “I took him to the London Olympics with the Swedish team three years ago and he lost a really tight contest for a place in the quarterfinals. “He knows he is travelling on a long road but, if keeps progressing, I expect him to be fighting for a world title in three to four years.” The trainer added: “He needs those years to mature fully, and there is no reason why he shouldn’t. He’s smart, learns quickly and has really quick hands.” In the past few weeks, both fighters have taken part in intensive training sessions, with boxers flying into Tenerife from Sweden and the other Canary Islands to sharpen them up at El Gym. Under the watchful

eye of Boguslavsky, Yigit has made the transition from Olympian to his present status. He is promoted by German-based Sauerland, but the Englishspeaking Swede has made his home on the

Island to continue his association with Vassili, who lives here in the South. Yigit has been nicknamed “Can You Dig It”, which is quite a mouthful (Yigit, Digit, geddit?) but with his talent,

looks and personality, the easy-going youngster is definitely a star in the making. “I’ve only ever done boxing and I love it,” he says. “I love the training, sparring and fighting, and also the Ten-

erife weather. It’s the perfect place to keep in shape. “My ambition is to obviously to be a world champion, but I know that nothing is certain in this sport. I can only do my best.”

Say it ain’t so, Mo! A DARK cloud hangs over Mo Farah, Britain’s golden boy of athletics, who missed two drugs tests the year before his double triumph at London’s 2012 Olympics.

His controversial American coach, Alberto Salazar, and training partner Galen Rupp, are already facing a series of drug-taking allegations, made in a BBC Panorama documentary. They have both denied them. Problems with the doping authorities for Farah - also a 10,000m and 5,000m world champion - reached a peak a few months after he began training under Salazar in February

2011. The two missed tests, as reported by the Daily Mail, risked his place in the London Olympics, in which he won two gold medals. The UK anti-doping rules state that an athlete who misses three tests in any 12-month period (down from 18 months since 2013) faces up to a four-year ban.

Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu was suspended for a year in 2006 after missing three tests and contravening the World Anti-Doping Agency’s “whereabouts” system. That forces athletes to pick an exact location for one hour every day in case they are needed for testing.

It seems that Farah missed the first test in early 2010, six months before he broke David Moorcroft’s 28-yearold British 5,000m record. The second test was scheduled, once Farah started working with Salazar, at his home in Teddington, Middlesex. But the athlete lodged an appeal with the UK Anti-Doping Agency, claiming he did not hear his doorbell. Farah’s agent, Ricky Simms, submitted a video taken in Farah’s house in which he tried to show that it was difficult to hear the doorbell from his client’s bedroom. UK Anti-Doping lawyers dismissed it as evidence. Simms also voiced his dismay at UK AntiDoping, claiming they were “unreasonable”

and didn’t want to help Farah. But a UKAD lawyer told Farah’s legal team by email on 9th June 2011: “I can understand why your client remains frustrated, but that really is born out of the fact that he feels he is being punished for something he did not intend to do. “Intent and negligence are not the same thing, though, as I am sure you have advised him. The simple fact with this Missed Test is that your client says he did not intend to miss the test, but it is clearly his own fault that he did.” The UKAD added in the email: “We cannot ‘suspend the Second Missed Test’”, and, finally, it warned: “We remain of the view our collective efforts are best directed to ensuring that no further

whereabouts issues arise between now and the 2012 Games.” Since joining Salazar’s set-up, Farah has since lived in the US, training at the Nike Oregon Project. Farah was concerned that he could be hit with a sanction, judging by the correspondence between lawyers, Farah and Salazar in May and June 2011, seen by the Mail. As Salazar warned Farah on 5th May that year: “If you miss another test, they will hang you.” Farah’s legal representatives told UKAD in an email on 8th June 2011: ‘As Mr Farah’s recent successes have raised his hopes for the upcoming Olympic Games, I hope you can understand his frustration regarding the Second Whereabouts Failure’.”
