Hollywood heads here!

Continued from front. Oscar-nominated Matt Damon will be returning to the role of Bourne after sitting out the last film in the series. Jeremy Renner took over the main character in the Bourne Legacy, but he will not return to the latest instalment. Paul Greengrass, the Oscar-nominated director, is set to direct the as yet untitled film. He was also in charge of the second and third Bourne films, and this new movie is seen as a return to the original plans for the series. According to Hollywood trade insiders, Julia Stiles and former Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen will also star. It’s believed that most

of the Tenerife filming will be on the streets of Santa Cruz. Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez revealed this week that he chaired a meeting with representatives of his cabinet, councillors, police chiefs and Universal Pictures, the US company behind the project. This meeting covered the infrastructure of the planned Autumn shoot. The Mayor described this as “an extraordinary event for Santa Cruz, since it will mean a near five-week shoot of an international blockbuster in our city, which will also have an impact at all levels to promote the town, also in terms of investment and certainly for employment, trade and the

hotel industry.” Bermudez said that getting a film like this to come to Tenerife “is the result of many negotiations and several years of work”. He added: “We are witnessing the first time Santa Cruz hosts a production of this calibre and we have competed and beaten off many other locations internationally and nationally.” Production is scheduled to last five weeks and a team of about 600 people will be flown in. Furthermore, the project will need to hire nearly 400 local extras. The Mayor said; “Of course we asked the producer to prioritise unemployed residents in Santa Cruz.” The producers have confirmed that

this will be the largestever urban-environment shoot in Spain. But it will lead to major disruptions to the road system, and the Mayor hopes to keep this to a minimum. “There will be discomfort and significant changes in terms of traffic and city services,” he confirmed. “Although we will try to make sure that this will be as few as possible, and we will ensure that everything takes place under the best conditions of security, we must all understand that this is a unique opportunity that Santa Cruz cannot miss.” It is thought that a lot of the filming will be carried out at night, although producers have indicated

that they will need to change the appearance of the city. Construction of sets, buildings and the displacement of street infrastructure will be among the issues for which Santa Cruz is preparing. Bermudez revealed that one of the reasons the capital was chosen for this shoot was “our ability to organise large, mass events like the Carnival. They know we are accustomed to managing large safety devices, traffic and that experience has tipped the scales in our favour.” The new Bourne film will see a rebooting of the franchise. The fourth film, Bourne Legacy, was based on Ren-

ner’s character Aaron Cross. This fifth edition will see Jason Bourne being tracked down by an assassin, played by Viggo Mortensen. Julia Stiles will return as Nicky Parsons, Bourne’s confidant and reluctant right-hand woman. Swedish actress Alicia Vikander has signed to play an unnamed love interest. According to Deadline magazine, Universal plans to release the film in America on 29th July 2016. Damon and Greengrass are writing the screenplay themselves, along with Christopher Rouse. Damon and Greengrass are also producing, alongside Gregory Goodman and Frank Marshall.

Consul pair’s brief

CHARMAINE ARBOUIN, British Consul for South Spain and the Canary Islands, was in Tenerife for a few days, meeting with officials and various volunteer groups.

She also took time, with Vice-Consul Helen

Keating, to pay a courtesy call to Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga. Clio O’Flynn, who has been working with Adeje on improving ex-pat communication and information links, was also present. The visit served a number of important purposes, and it was also an opportunity for the Consul to congratulate the Mayor on his recent local election

Mayor puts an end to ‘crazy’ Arona policies JOSÉ Mena, following his first full week as Arona Mayor, has pledged and end to the borough’s “crazy”, urban policy, He issued a reassuring message to residents, saying: “We want to have a stable, majority government to ensure the management that this situation requires of the municipality. And with his Council already at work, he added: “We will maintain dialogue and start to develop projects and implement measures. “It seems to me that

things were bad in the past. The urban policy in Arona has been crazy and had turned its back on the citizens. This changes now.” José Mena has been busy touring the municipality- owned buildings and centres, and holding a raft of meetings with workers. “We must start talking about tourism investment,” he stressed. “We must be an attractive focus for investors, which requires we provide the tools that offer guarantees. Arona needs a working society.”

success. Both Charmaine and Helen were also anxious to find out more about the ongoing Adeje projects to improve integration, and to look at how the two bodies can work together to advance ex-pat participation in Adeje. And, alongside, to help British residents there get the most out of their chosen home. It was pointed out that too often, ex-pats look for help only when they have a problem: health, social welfare, etc. Therefore, one strand of the Council’s work, which would help the British consular office hugely, is getting people into the system before the problems begin. Mayor Fraga spoke about the Adeje Convivencia/Harmonious Co-existence programme, which is a borough-wide activity to strengthen links between its various communities. It is a cross-cultural, international, crossgenerational campaign, which has been working to reflect the many different nationalities living there.

The Mayor also confirmed that Council officials were preparing a campaign to help more people register on the “padrón”. They are also working in various ways to break down the walls of fear that many nonSpanish residents, including Britons, agreed the Consul, have about approaching their local

town halls to register. The Mayor also detailed the many different services available to the town’s senior citizens - useful information because many ex-pats are older residents. For instance, Adeje has a geriatric care centre and an Alzheimer’s centre for all residents. There is also a host of

leisure-based, all-yearround activities for retired individuals from folk-dancing to model-making, visits to other islands, theatre trips and so much more. The Consular visit ended with a promise of future co-operation, which can only be good news for Adeje ex-pats.

Starmus returns with a host of Nobel winners

Pouring in to Tenerife THE Canary Islands has recorded its finest May tourist figures with the arrival of 810,243 foreign visitors, which was the highest since records began.

Of more importance, perhaps, was that this bounce followed two months of decline in the tourist sector. According to Frontur (the Ministry of Industry’s tourist movements border of statistics), the influx of visitors from other countries grew last month by 4.3% on the islands against last year’s stats, after falling 1.6% in March and 5.5%

TENERIFE’s Starmus Festival next year, from 27th June to 2nd July under the slogan “Beyond the Horizon: tribute to Stephen Hawking”, will bring together a dozen Nobel prize winners in the physics and medicine categories.

The distinguished dozen comprises Harold Kroto and Eric Betzig (Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry 1996 and 2014); biologists Carol Greider and Elizabeth Blackburn (shared Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2009); Robert Wilson and David Gross (Nobel Prize winners for Physics in 1978 and 2004); Adam Riess and Brian Schmidt (shared Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011), and the married couple Edvard and May-Britt Moser (Nobel Prize winners in Physiology or Medicine in 2014).

The Festival will also feature astronomers, astrophysicists and renowned scientists, among them astronauts Michael Lopez-Alegria, Garrett Reisman, Chris Hadfield and Russell Schweickart; cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Sergey Volkov; astrophysicists Neil deGrasse Tyson, Kip Thorne, Martin Rees, Jill Tarter, Robert Williams, and physicist Neil Turok. The programme will be dedicated to Stephen Hawking, the theoretical physicist and science publicist renowned in history. Professor Hawking, who has acquired 12 honarary degrees, said of the tribute: “The vision of Starmus has already become an incredible reality with its two historic, previous editions. “This next edition is consolidated as a single chamber of debate for the future of humanity.” Garik Israelian, founder and director of Starmus, said:

“The organisers and guests are very proud, and it is an honour to have the blessing of Professor Hawking to pay this tribute which, next year will be a historic milestone to the height of which this theoretical physicist represents.” This international meeting will focus on multiple scientific disciplines, not only on astrophysics and astronomy, but on biology, neuroscience, chemistry, physics and the space race and the great challenges all these materials still entail for man. Besides Prof Hawking, acknowledged astrophysicist Brian May, also known worldwide for his career as a guitarist and composer in the band Queen, will be attending his third Starmus Festival. He says: “Professor Hawking would highlight many things about Starmus, but especially the closeness with which the Festival welcomes all the public.”

in April. As a result, the first five months of the year closed with a balance of 4,859,434 foreign tourists - slightly higher than the 2014 figure, which was the industry’s best year ever. The Canaries benefited from the record arrival of German tourists. And the numbers were boosted by the growth of the French and Dutch markets, which saw a sharp increase, against last year. In May, Spain reached 6.5 million foreign tourists - 6.8% more than in 2014 - bringing the sector to an accumulated growth so far this year of 5.1%. And it has now reached 22.5m visitors from other countries.

Rajoy: Spain can help tackle global starving SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy believes Spain has much to offer in the global battle to beat hunger and malnutrition.

The Premier also praised the strength of the Spanish food industry - “a key sector in the Spanish economy” - which accounts for 8.4% of the country’s domestic output. Rajoy was attending Spain Day at Expo 2015, held in Milan with the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. He defended the ideal enshrined by the universal exhibitions like that of Milan, saying: “Since the mid-19th century, they have helped

create a more inter-communicated world that is more tolerant, more cosmopolitan and, therefore, more prosperous.” These events, he added, show that “development and progress are only possible within a context of co-operation and concord”. The PM said he must be present at the Milan Expo “for reasons of conviction and coherence”,

because of its track record. He also highlighted the show’s success and congratulated the Italian authorities for having prepared “a project as ambitious in its content as it is a model in organisation and execution”. Rajoy described the Spanish pavilion in Milan as “a real Spanish home, showing a country that opens up its doors because we want to know you, and we want you to know us better.” In addition to thanking everyone who had made the pavilion possible, he said: “It has been built on the foundations of a clear example of Spanish talent, an architecture that emerges from this cross-current of genius that flows between Madrid and Barcelona.” In particular, Rajoy referred to the Expo 2015 theme, insisting that Spain had a great deal to offer in this debate, in which the stakes for global

society are high. Key issues include food security, innovation to feed the planet, sustainable, environmental development, the implications of diet on health and the economic impact of the food industry. The Spanish Premier stressed that agriculture was a strategic sector, as highlighted by the Millennium Goals subscribed by the members of the United Nations. “The first of these is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger,” he said. “The experience and practice accumulated by Spain in this area can make for a positive contribution.” Rajoy said Spain had a food industry “more cutting-edge and competitive than most”, and a leader in many areas. For example, it is the world’s biggest producer and exporter of wine and olive oil, and also tops the list of exporters of fruit and vegetables. He added: “The Spanish food industry is as competitive as it is efficient, and accounts for 8.4% of Spain’s GDP. “It is a key driver of job creation which, following the crisis, is breaking alltime records in Spain.” He clarified that the boost from the Span-

Jobs’ drive a bonus for the unemployed MORE than 3,000 people and 25 companies gathered last week at the fairgrounds in Santa Cruz for an employment drive as part of Expoempleo 2015.

This was a meeting point between employers and the unemployed, organised by the Cabildo and the provincial Chamber of Commerce. Cabildo chief Car-

los Alonso praised the event, saying: “The turn-out shows that this is the first and not the last one of its kind.” The programme comprised workshops, conferences and network

meetings. And the main objective was for it to become a meeting point between the business sector, unemployed people, agents linked to employment and the general public. Carlos Alonso said: “This initiative contributes to promote employment. The number of companies here has increased, and the number of attendees is also expected to be higher than in previous years.” Jose Luis Garcia, provincial Chamber President, stressing the im-

portance of training, said: “The great concern of the Chamber is that no one be unemployed on the Island.” Throughout the day a number of lectures, communications and workshops of interest to unemployed and companies, took place. There were also network meetings - between companies and job-seekers, among entrepreneurs, to conduct recruitments. These took place on a short-term basis, with potential candidates for such posts.

ish food industry has, in turn, been driven by innovation. The PM praised the “excellence” of Spanish raw materials, saying they were a fundamental part of the Mediterranean diet. “Their importance was acknowledged by UNESCO in 2010 through its recognition as part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage,” he said. It is for these reasons, said Rajoy, that Spain had a great deal to say in the fight against hunger and malnutrition, which affects over 800 million people around the world. “They can count on

Spain to help achieve this great goal,” he promised. “We have the knowledge, we have the experience, and we want to make them available to everyone. “The world must generate food for all the people, wherever they live. And today, we know that it is possible to do so.” He said Spain fully supported the United Nations’ World Food Programme, and added: “My country’s work as an international player in the area of food cooperation is an effort which is as substantial as it is prolonged over time.”

Going to Greece? Take cover, and lots of cash! BRITISH tourists heading to Greece for their holidays should not be disrupted as a result of the country’s financial turmoil. But UK travel organisation ABTA, still monitoring the Greeks’ situation repeated its advice for visitors to carry some euros in cash -and make sure they are fully-covered by insurance. The latest travellers’ advice comes as hopes were raised of an 11thhour deal being reached in Brussels to avoid Greece exiting the single currency. An ABTA spokesman said: “We do not anticipate any need for tour operators to rebook their customers to a different destination.” The organisation was also unaware of any plans to evacuate holiday-makers from Greece, a spokesman saying: “Any changes in Greece would be highly unlikely to happen overnight, and any switch to a new currency would take time, so euros would likely be accepted in the interim. “Holiday-makers heading out to Greece this summer are advised to take some cash in euros with them as well as other payment methods (credit/debit cards) so they are cov-

ered for all situations.” He added: “We would also advise them, as we would with any destination, to take out travel insurance as soon as they book their holiday to provide protection should they need to cancel. “At present, we have no indication that holiday-makers will be disrupted, but as with all destination matters, we will continue to monitor the situation and work with our members on any developments.” Foreign Office (FO) advice to Britons travelling to Greece has stayed the same since 6th May. It said travellers should carry more than one method of payment, and make sure they have enough cash to cover emergencies and any unexpected delays. The FO said: “Our travel advice is based on objective assessments of the risks to British nationals. “These are made by drawing on expert sources of information available to the Government, including intelligence, local knowledge and experience of our overseas staff. “Advice is under constant review, especially for volatile regions or developing crises.”

Help me get a job, Dad!

A load of Bull I’VE thought long and hard about this. On Wednesday, a 43-yearold Spanish man died after being gored by a bull at an event in Coria, which is in southern Spain.

It is understood that the man was standing behind a protective fence at a bullring when the bull charged. Somehow, one of the bull’s horns slipped through the barrier and caught the man in the abdomen and chest. He died a few hours later. This tragedy will again see calls from all over the world for the sport to be banned. And I use the word “sport” in its broadest possible terms. Every year, there are stories of matadors being killed or seriously injured by bulls, and often the response is “Good!” But that is someone’s son, or father who has lost his life. Personally, I feel it is something that belongs to a bygone era like cock-fighting or bear-baiting. However, I am an advocate for boxing and the Grand National.

I will argue until the cows come home for their rightful place on the sporting calendar. If you don’t like those sports, then don’t watch. And in a strange kind of way, that is the same point with bull-fighting. Just because nonSpaniards don’t like it doesn’t mean the tradition should be banned because some people are offended. It is our right, as a civilised, grown-up society to maintain our values and traditions if we so choose. It is why we live in a free country. In Ecuador they eat Guinea Pigs, while in England they have them as pets. In England they eat Cows, while in India they have them as pets. In India they eat Snakes, while in Korea they have them as pets. In Korea they eat dogs, while in America they keep them as pets. In Spain they eat rabbits and have them as pets. I could go on. Who are we to tell people how to live their lives in their country? We wouldn’t stand for it. And isn’t that what the current world conflict is really about?

MORE than half of jobless Spaniards are still dependent on family, friends or acquaintances to help them find work.

A new survey by the National Statistics Institute (INE) also shows that the country’s network of staterun employment offices place just 2.5% of positions, with private agencies faring a little better on 3.6%. The remaining posts are filled by jobseekers sending their résumés to companies. Public and private job centres find work for even fewer non- Spaniards than nationals: just 1.34% and 3.25% respectively. The figures show that 46.7% of those who have been working in Spain during the last five years

owe it to their contacts. And just 22.2% earned their position purely on the basis of merit, after applying to a company or organisation directly. More worrying is that job centres are responsible for finding work for such a small percentage. But private agencies are not much more successful. The percentage of employees who found work through advertisements, either online or in the press, is almost twice that of private agencies, at 6.9%. The data comes from a specific survey carried out by the INE on people in employment last year to discover more about the situation of first-and-second-generation immigrants within the workforce. Last month’s figures for the Spanish job sector show new signs of recovery. But the detailed analysis shows

that foreigners rely even more on contacts to find employment, with 61.4% gaining work this way. Yet public and private employment offices find jobs for even fewer non-Spaniards than nationals - just 1.34% and 3.25% respectively. The survey also asked why immigrants had come to Spain. The majority - 2,086,900 out of 4.7 million (44.45%) said they were looking for work. The remainder came there to join a spouse or family mem-

ber. The data collected by the INE also shows differences in education and training between Spaniards and immigrants. In both groups, around 40% have a highschool diploma, while among foreigners, the number of people who studied up to age 18 is 32%, compared with 22.5% of Spaniards. But 33.8% of homegrown people have a higher education qualification, compared with 25.5% of those not born in Spain.

Dear Editor, Siam Mall has had lots of publicity, so I looked up the Internet for bus service’s, and found it was quite good. Unfortunately, it was Siam Mall in Bangkok! Tenerife is suppose to be a “holiday island”, and not all tourists hire cars. But you certainly need one to get to Siam Mall. I have lived in Tenerife for almost a decade, and the nearest bus I got to it was the Bus Station near the Magma. This leaves a fairly long trek uphill, past the Magma, across the motorway and the road passing Siam Park. I choose not to own a car - but Siam Mall, like Las Chafiras, seems to have been built with motorists in mind. Alistair Stars, Los Cristianos

Village ‘kills’ its old name

A SPANISH village has had its name changed following a referendum and local government approval after the orginal name translated as “Fort Kill Jews”. Castrillo Matajudios has now reverted to its previous title of Castrillo Mota de Judios (“Jew’s Hill Fort”) after its 50 inhabitants voted for the switch last year. The controversial name might have been adopted in medieval times by Catholic converts from Judaism, keen to show their loyalty to the state. Castrillo Mota de Judios, founded in 1035 by Jews fleeing persecution, has a long Jewish heritage. Lorenzo Rodriguez, the village Mayor, said after last year’s vote: “The phrase ‘Matajudios’ did not correspond to the way this village thinks or acts these days; nor with our village flag, which has the Star of David on it.” Spain still has a village called Valle de Matamoros, or “Kill Moors Valley” - a reference to the North African invaders who conquered parts of southern Spain - but there are no plans to change its name.

Spanish hit holiday trail

ALL but 14% of Spaniards will be on their travels this summer, as opposed to the 82% who hit the road last year. A study by online travel agency website lastminute.com has highlighted the increase, and revealed that 45% of the Spanish have already booked their holidays, while the remaining 55% will leave it until the last minute. The analysis also shows that Spain is the place most reserved this summer for holiday-makers, which is probably why 52% of Spaniards choose to stay at home. Among the destinations most booked by the Spaniards is mainland Spain (33%) the Canary and Balearic Islands (20%), followed by Italy (7%) and the Caribbean (5%). As for how long, the report states that the Spanish will spend more time away - 12.64 days on average compared with the 12.48 days registered in 2014. Thus, 41% enjoy 15 days or more away from home compared with the 37% of last year.

NASA reveals space mystery SPACE experts have been left bewildered by a three -mile -high pyramid-shaped mountain and “mysterious bright spots” shining from craters on the distant, dwarf planet of Ceres.

NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, orbiting 2,700 miles above the planet. spotted the triangular peak. The massive mountain, towering three miles above Ceres’ flat

surface, is more than half the height of Everest! After taking images, NASA tweeted of the mystery mountain: “Curiouser & curiouser. @ NASA_Dawn sees pyramid-shaped peak.” As the craft drew closer to Ceres - the largest object in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter - more and more features were beginning to reveal themselves. They included “mysterious bright spots” in a 55-mile-wide crater. At least eight spots can be seen in the largest bright area, which scientists believe is about

six miles wide. Ceres, named after the Roman goddess of agriculture, was discovered in 1801, and the NASA boffins believe a highly-reflective material is responsible for the spots, and main possibilities include ice and salt. Dawn’s infra-red mapping spectrometer allows scientists to identify specific minerals on Ceres by looking at how light is reflected. Each mineral reflects light wavelengths in a unique way, allowing experts to determine the planet’s rock and ice composition. As the spacecraft con-

tinues to send back more images and data, NASA will learn more about the bright spots. Experts have also identified numerous craters of varying sizes, many of which have central peaks. They say there is “ample evidence” of past activity on the planet’s surface, including landslides and collapsed structures. “The surface of Ceres has revealed many interesting and unique features,” said Carol Raymond, deputy principal investigator for the Dawn mission, based at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory

in Pasadena, California. “For example, icy moons in the outer solar system have craters with central pits. But on Ceres, central pits in large craters are much more common. “These and other features will allow us to understand the inner structure of Ceres that we cannot sense directly.” Dawn, the first mission to visit a dwarf planet, arrived at Ceres on 6th March. It will remain at its current 2,700-mile altitude until Monday (30th June, and will then descend to 900 miles in August.

Same-old, same-old summer

THIS summer will be warmer than normal, with rainfall in the whole of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands around normal levels for this season.

But Canary Islanders, can expect the same as they have experienced for the last four decades. That is predicted by Antonio Mestre, head of AEMET (Climatology of

the Meteorology State Agency). “A moderate trend in temperatures from July to September shows they will be slightly above normal, which

may be only as much as one degree Celsius above average, he maintained.” Ana Casals, AEMET, spokesperson, said: “There is a greater likeli-

hood that the temperature reaches just aboveaverage, and that the Canary Islands will be normal, after the fourthwarmest, and driest, spring since 1961.”

Greenhouse gold for drug growers FORTUNES to be gained from the sale of marijuana has seen an incredible growth in the number of “greenhouses” in Spain. Authorities say the number of cannabis plantations they have found and dismantled has increased fivefold across the country, with greenhouse hotspots in Andalucia, Catalonia and the east coast.

They claim the plantations are usually hidden in storage rooms, homes and garages, or even in larger greenhouses on industrial sites. National Police seized a total of 86,000 marihuana plants in 2014, yet in the first five months of 2015, they have already confiscated a mind-blowing 60,000. Meanwhile, Guardia Civil seized a total of 105,000 plants in 2013 and, between January and October of 2014 the most recent data released by the military police - they confiscated

nia, 14 in the Valencian Community and nine in Catalonia. A National Police representative said: “Each plant can go through three harvesting procedures. In the legal market, you can find everything you need: lamps, humidifiers, irrigation systems and others, and for less than 2,000 euros, you could have

Referendum in the hands of protesters 90,300. The amount of cannabis grown in the country and impounded by law-enforcement teams has increased by an astonishing 532% between 2009 and 2013. Spain is not the only country where the drug trade is increasingly green-fingered: the greenhouse trend invading Europe. Between 2003 and 2013, EU police forces have gone from seizing 1.5 million plants per year to 3.7 million, according to the latest European

report on drugs this year. Planting cannabis is easier than trafficking, according to the chief inspector of the National Police drug squad, who said that this business had a lower level of risk, did not involve crossing borders, was cheap and accessible with a consumption culture supporting it. Youths in Spain come fourth in levels of cannabis consumption in Europe, so growing marijuana for sale has

a ready, profitable market. In addition, marihuana cultivation is increasingly viewed by society as an acceptable activity, and, curiously, it is not compared with trafficking cocaine, say. Together with Malaga, Murcia, Alicante and Valencia, Granada is where most plants have been seized, in seven police operations. Of the 58 sizeable police raids in Spain so far this year, 20 were in Catalo-

Canaries receive 99m to boost electrical network THE Ministry of Industry anticipates that its electric transmission network investment between now and 2020 will stand at 4.4bn euros, of which 99m will be spent on the Canary Islands.

That’s the findings of a report by the National Commission on Finan-

cial Markets and the Competition (CNMC) on planning the network until 2020. The largest item of these investments, 1.3bn, will focus on improving the backingmesh of the network, while 980m will go to security supply, 971m for inter-connections and 706m to support the distribution. Geographically, the 2.8bn-euro total corresponds to Spain, 885m to the Canaries and 245m to the Baleares.

And the latter will be given an extra 383m euros for connections between the Balearic islands, 129m for the connection between Ceuta and mainland Spain and 106m for connections between islands in the Canaries. More than half of the planned investments - 2.6bn - corresponds to work already underway, while the rest are down to needs identified by security supply, connection requests or networks required by

the high-speed railway, among others. In its report, the CNMC cut the electricity demand forecasts from the proposal to an average annual increase of 1.7% between 2015 to 2020, compared with 2.3% proposed by Industry for 20132020. And as such, the committee calls for “the planning document update” every three years to assess the economic and environmental efficiencies achieved.

THOUSANDS of people, campaigning for a referendum on the Basque region’s independence, made their voices heard in northern Spain on Sunday.

Demonstrators, holding long lengths of cloth, formed human chains across several Basque cities, including the capital of Vitoria, Bilbao and San Sebastian. And many protesters wore red, white and green, which are the colours of the Basque flag. The demo, organised by the pro-independence Gure Esku Dago (“It’s In Our Hands”) group, was backed by several separatist parties and local figures. Spain’s Basque community has long asserted that it should be independent of the country and, in recent years, pro-Basque parties have made significant gains in local elections. The Basque region, which has its own distinct language and culture, has also been inspired by pro-independence gatherings in the Catalonia region.

Pello Urizar, head of separatist coalition Bildu, told reporters at the gathering: “More and more people believe that the right to decide concerns all of us, and that we have the right to decide our future.” While recent Basque separatist groups have been largely peaceful, the movement has a history of violence. The armed separatist Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (“Basque Country and Freedom” or ETA) group is accused of killing over 800 people across a four-decade campaign. The killings were halted when its members agreed to stop using violent tactics in 2011. However, the group still refuses to disarm or surrender, as demanded by both the Spanish and French governments. A joint raid in May by Spanish and French authorities in a French town found a cache of weapons, allegedly linked to the ETA. A referendum vote on the issue was scheduled for 2008, but it was blocked by Spain’s Supreme Court at the behest of its government. The decision triggered widespread criticism and protests.

Horror as sharks maul young kids TWO shark attacks within 90 minutes of each other left two American teenagers badly injured after being mauled by the fiercesome predators on Sunday.

Authorities raced to get people out of the water in Oak Island, North Carolina, after the first shark attacked a 14-year-old girl, tearing part of her arm off, at around 4pm. Then, two miles down the beach, a boy of 16, who was attacked shortly afterwards, had his left arm ripped off. The girl, who was visiting the area with family, was airlifted to a hospital for urgent treatment, said Oak Island

Mayor Betty Wallace, who wrote on Facebook: “One of the things we hope we never have to hear from a beach community; the shark-bite victim is a teenage girl. “Confirmed that she has lost part of her left arm and may lose her left leg. Please keep this girl and her family in your prayers.” Mayor Wallace confirmed on Monday that the male victim had lost his left arm in the attack. New Hanover Regional Medical Centre said both teenagers were in a fair condition after undergoing surgery. Steve Bouser, who was beginning a week-long holiday, said: “I saw someone carry this girl out of the water and people were swarming around, trying to help. It was quite nightmarish.”

His wife Brenda added.”It was like a scene from Jaws.” Randy Milligan, who saw the boy being attacked, said: “I tore off my shirt and tied it around his arm. He was screaming, ‘Is this real, is this a movie?’ and he just kept on screaming. “Some guy came running up and we took the shirt off and put his belt around him really tight. “I’ve never seen anything like it. It was like a movie. There was stuff hanging down.” Both victims were thought to have been in waist-deep water, around 20ft from the shore, when the attacks happened. It was unclear what type of shark or how many were involved, but the beaches were reopened on Monday. The incidents happened just a few miles up the coast from Ocean Isle Beach, where a 13-year-old girl was bitten by a shark on Thursday, suffering lacerations to her right foot. Red flags have reportedly been hoisted at most Brunswick County beaches, and a helicopter has been scouring the waters for the shark.

Trigger pulled on Colt gun-makers THE loss of a lucrative US military contract, and a fall in popularity, has left gunmaker Colt Defense filing for bankruptcy.

The firearms manufacturer, which supplied M4 carbines and M16 rifles in the past for the US military, listed debts of as much of $500m (£323m) when it filed in bankruptcy court in Wilmington, Delaware, on Sunday. Existing lenders have agreed to provide $20m to enable the company to continue operating while in bankruptcy, subject to court approval. Under the scheme, the

company, based in West Hartford, Connecticut, would be allowed to restructure its balance sheet. Keith Maib, chief restructuring officer, said: “Colt remains open for business.” Sales in modern sports rifles and handguns fell 30% in 2014, and delays in US government sales have also hit the business. Colt has struggled since November, when it took out a $70m rescue loan from Morgan Stanley to make an interest payment. The company tried to restructure out of court, announcing in April an exchange offer for loans, which expired on 12th June. Colt supplied the US military with M4 car-

bines used by front-line troops in the late Nineties and early 2000s, but the contract ended in 2013. Founder Samuel Colt, a pioneer in the revolver’s mass production, opened his first plant in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1836. He went on to become one of the 10 wealthiest businessmen in the US, according to the company website. One of its rifles, the Winchester Model 1873, became known as “the gun that won the West” in the 19th century, with more than 700,000 being produced. Colt died in 1862 at the age of 47. Armsmear, his home, still stands in Hartford and is a national historic landmark.

Messy strike by cleaners!

San Juan blazes are over the top TENERIFE firefighters were called out to 58 separate sites on Tuesday as a result of San Juan’s traditional night of bonfires.

Over 120 personnel, including professional and volunteer firefighters, formed part of the service set up to extinguish or control blazes. The Central Fire Coordination for Tenerife registered a total of 192 calls, between 4pm on

Tuesday and 8am on Wednesday. Specifically, the park in Santa Cruz and the San Miguel de Abona borough recorded the highest number of call-outs - 14 and 12 respectively, and all of these had uncontrolled stubble fires, or blazes, caused by the spread of the fires themselves. The biggest blaze was in an area of Adeje golf course in La Caleta, which required a couple of fire engines and fire crew using breathing equipment.

Our shrinking police forces THE Guardia Civil and the National Police have lost a combined total of 425 officers in the past five years. And that’s in the Canary Islands alone.

This astonishing data was provided by the central government in a parliamentary response to a request by the Socialist PSOE party into policing numbers. And the revelation tallies with recent public concerns over policing levels. So while the two state security forces on the islands numbered 7,664 agents in 2011, this number dropped to about 7,239 troops this year, which represents a 5.5% decrease in the combined number of both forces.

26th June - 2nd July 2015

And this decline has been progressive since 2011. Between 20112012, 53 policemen and 73 Guardia Civil were lost; from 20122013, 78 National officers and 97 Guardia Civil; from 20132014, 52 police officers and 30 agents of the Meritorious, and from 2014 to March or February 2015 (the latest data available for each other, respectively) another 32 policemen and 10 Guardia Civil vanished. These decreasing figures should be of great concern to the public, and the one unanswered question on most people’s lips must be: “Why have all these officers left?” This should be revealed by the authorities, and efforts surely made to stem the outward flow.

THE cleaners’ strike at Tenerife North airport is in it’s second week, with travellers and airport workers experiencing overflowing rubbish bins and general untidiness.

This all down to the cleaning staff strike, called by the contractor following threatened lay-offs. Workers are also demanding better working conditions, and there is no sign of it ending

in the next few days. The airport’s controller, AENA is hoping to find a solution as quickly as possible as the image of the airport is being damaged. Travellers are seeing overflowing bins

the moment they leave customs. One flyer said: “It looks like an episode of Fraggel Rock where Mrs Trash welcomes you all. It feels the same here.” In the Departures hall

there have been lots of complaints about the bad smell, while in the arrivals hall there is rubbish, bottles, papers and liquids scattered on the floor. “I did not even attempt to go to the bathroom. I entered and left immediately because if I stayed a little more time I would have vomited,” said another angry traveller. Outside the main concourse things are no better. Waste bins are flowing and there is rubbish strewn all over the place.

All-night Tube map rubs salt into drivers’ wounds JUST as London’s Tube drivers make plans to strike, an official map showing which Underground stations will operate 24hour services over weekends has been published.

The drivers are prepared to strike over pay and conditions for the all-night service, which begins on 12th September. And ASLEF union members will make their protests known with a 24-hour walk-out from 9.30pm on 8th July. They could be joined by members of the RMT and TSSA unions, with the results of a ballot for industrial action being released at the end of this month. Gareth Powell, director of strategy and service development for London Underground, described the company’s map as a “historic step in our modernisation of the Underground”. He said: “The Night Tube map shows our customers exactly when and where they can use this landmark service, which will make their

late-night journeys quicker and easier than ever before. “As well as making life easier for people, the Night Tube will also boost London’s nighttime economy - supporting thousands of jobs and stimulating hundreds of millions of pounds in economic growth.” But Mick Cash, RMT union general secretary, accused Transport for London of having the wrong priorities. “Instead of hyping up route maps and publicity stunts, Transport for London should be addressing the staffing, pay and safety issues

at the heart of the current dispute over night running on London Underground,” he said. “That should be their priority.” Finn Brennan, ASLEF’s district organiser for the Tube, said: “It’s easy enough to produce a map, but if London Underground management want to have an all-night service in September, they need to sit down and negotiate a fair deal for the staff they expect to provide it. “Last week, train drivers on London Underground voted by a record 97% to strike over London Underground’s

refusal to negotiate on new rosters that would mean they could have to work an unlimited number of weekend and night shifts for no extra pay. “ASLEF aren’t opposed to all-night services, but they have to be introduced in a way that is fair, and protects the work life balance of the hard-working staff, who have delivered the improved service that Underground management boast of.” Night Tubes will run on Friday nights and the early hours of Saturday and Sunday mornings on selected routes.

Mystic Agadir on our radar AGADIR is set to become a popular tourist destination for people living in Tenerife! That is the Moroccan tourist board’s belief after another link with the Island was signed off.

The gorgeous 10km of natural sandy beaches, running along the Moroccan coast of Agadir, will, from August, be less than two hours away from Tenerife. This is thanks to a new, direct connection which Binter Airlines will launch from 5th August until 23rd September. Flights will leave at 11.15am on Wednesdays from Tenerife North airport, and head back at 1.55pm local time.

And the Moroccan beaches are just 25 kilometres from the city centre and airport. Agadir is a young city, which was totally reconstructed in 1960 after an earthquake destroyed it, leaving thousands of people dead. It also has a major port divided into three areas:

a social marina, an industrial port and a fishing port. This tourist city is the second-busiest in Morocco after Marrakesh, and welcomes around one million visitors annually. The attractions are the Moroccan culture, heritage and excellent cuisine. The main tour-

ists arriving in the region are English and German, but the significant increase of the middle-class in the country in recent years has also increased the number of Spanish visitors. The Tenerife flights will join the one already operating from Gran Canaria, which has two

weekly departures. Hotels of three, four and five stars are dotted along the coast of the city, which has expanded recently to a total of more than 27,000 accommodation places, with an ambition to

r e a c h 30,000. Bernardo Martel, director of Club Hotel Riu Tikida Beach, says: “Agadir has grown and changed dramatically in the last 5-6 years. “Much has been built, and tourism in the last four years has grown, especially from England, because the tour operators have chosen this destination for those who are looking for beaches and the mystical part of Morocco.”

THERE were more births in the Canaries during 2014 than in any other Spanish region - a 3.1% increase, according to provisional data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Extremadura had the second-best figures, and only the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla surpass these with increases of 10.6% and 7.6% respectively. Despicable dog-meat fiesta

DESPITE a huge campaign against it, an annual dog-meat festival in southern China has gone ahead, with around 10,000 dogs being slaughtered at Monday’s Lychee and Dog Meat Festival in Yulin. The dogs, many of which are suspected to be stolen pets or guard dogs, were slaughtered by hundreds of meat vendors in the city. Eating dog meat is an ancient tradition in some parts of China, where it is said to contain many nutrients. A social media campaign with the hashtags #StopYuLin2015 and

#itsnofestival attracted international attention, calling for the festival to be stopped. And a UK online petition received more than three million signatures. And even within China, there is an increasinglypowerful dog welfare movement beginning to change attitudes. One woman, Yang Xiaoyun, paid nearly £700 to “buy back” and save 100 dogs at the beginning of the festival. But all to no avail. Dog meat is not widely available in China, and festivals like Yulin are exceptions. But in some provinces and among

some people, dog meat remains a delicacy. Festival organisers and vendors dismissed calls for them to stop the slaughter, claiming the animals were killed humanely, and that eating dog was no different from eating pork or beef. But many of the dogs appear to be stolen rather than farmed, and are killed with clubs in desperately-unpleasant slaughterhouses. Welfare charity Animals Asia conducted a three-year undercover investigation and said it had never come across large-scale dog farms,

which suggests many animals are stolen. Jill Robinson, who runs the charity, said: “Our investigations strongly point to what everybody familiar with the industry has long suspected – that the vast majority of China’s dog meat comes from stolen companion animals, and that misinformation and illegality is rife at every stage of the industry supply chain.” Sky News spoke to one dog welfare activist, who splits his time between an office job and a quest to save as many dogs as possible. Mr Yao has been rescuing dogs for two years with a group of fellow activists, who intercept vehicles known to be carrying dogs destined for slaughterhouses. Many are heading to cities in north-eastern China, where dog meat is popular among the ethnic Korean population. “It is hard to encourage people to join organisations like ours in China,” said Mr Yao. “The dog meat dealers are well established and organised. We are just small groups of people who love dogs.”

Major companies blown away in a puff of smoke CIGARETTE smokers in Quebec have shocked tobacco companies by winning more than £8bn in damages after the biggest class action lawsuit in Canadian history.

Titanic composer dies in tragic plane crash JAMES Horner, the Titanic composer who won an Oscar for that score, has died after a singleengine plane registered to him crashed in southern California.

It happened at around 9.30am local time on Monday near Ventura County’s Quatal Canyon, in Los Padres National Forest. No one else was on board the plane, which was one of several owned by the 61-yearold composer. Ian Gregor, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, said the aircraft was an S-312 Tucano MK1 turbo-prop with two seats. Mr Horner was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning two for Titanic, the Best Picture of 1997. He composed the film’s score and its enduring theme song, My Heart Will Go On, sung by Celine Dion. In a statement on her website, Dion said: “Rene and I are deeply saddened by the tragic death of James Horner. “He will always remain a great composer

in our hearts. James played an important part in my career and we will miss him. We offer his family and friends our deepest sympathy.” Mr Horner’s scores for Aliens, Apollo 13, Field Of Dreams, Braveheart, A Beautiful Mind, House Of Sand And Fog and Avatar also earned Oscar nominations, as did his original song, Somewhere Out There, from An American Tail. His next film to be released on 24th July, is Southpaw, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams. Director Ron Howard wrote on Twitter: “Brilliant Composer James Horner, friend & collaborator on 7 movies, has tragically died in a plane crash. My heart aches for his loved ones.” Russell Crowe, Oscar-nominated for A Beautiful Mind, tweeted: “My sincere condolences to the family, loved ones and friends of James Horner #abeautifulmind.” Kirstie Alley wrote: “I’m so sad to hear about James Horner ... He scored the first movie I did ... Star Trek 2 ... great composer ... great person ... huge loss.”

Most of the compensation will be dished out to about 100,000 current and former smokers. And some £69m is to be split between 900,000 people who became addicted to tobacco and could not stop smoking. They alleged that three of the world’s biggest brands did not give adequate warning to the public that cigarettes could cause cancer and other illnesses - even though the industry was aware of the dangers in the Fifties. Although JTI-Macdonald, Imperial Tobacco and Rothmans, Benson & Hedges have announced their intention to appeal the ruling, the court has ordered them to deposit £517m within 60 days. The lawsuit began in 1998. Tens of thousands of documents were reviewed, and the court

began sitting only in 2012. An anti-smoking lobby group, representing the one million plaintiffs, said: “It’s a great day for victims of tobacco, who have been waiting for this moment for 17 years.” Andre Lesperance, one of the lawyers representing the smokers, described the ruling as a “great victory for society in general”. He added: “These three companies lied to their customers and hurt their right to life.” Lise Blais was one of those waiting for a verdict. Her husband, JeanYves, died in 2012 from lung cancer after attempting but failing to quit smoking six times over a 14-year period.

Imperial Tobacco Canada, which was ordered by Superior Court Justice Brian Riordan to cover 67% of the damages, has said in a statement that the decisions of consumers are not its responsibility. The company’s spokeswoman, Tamara Gitto, added: “The judgment ignores the reality that both adult consumers and governments have known about the risks associated with smoking for decades, and seeks to relieve adult consumers of any responsibility for their actions. “We believe there are strong grounds for appeal and we will continue to defend our rights as a legal company.”

Meanwhile, JTI-Macdonald, a subsidiary of Japan Tobacco Inc Group, added: “Since the 1950s, Canadians have had a very high awareness of the health risks of smoking. “That awareness has been reinforced by the health warnings printed on every legal cigarette package for more than 40 years.” Imperial Tobacco Canada is part of British American Tobacco plc, while Rothmans, Benson & Hedges is a subsidiary of Philip Morris International. All three companies saw their share prices plunge following the verdict. Deborah Arnott, the chief executive of ASH, is hoping that “where Canada leads, the UK will follow”. She said: “The tobacco industry’s products are lethal when used as intended, yet it has largely avoided having to pay for those crimes against humanity. “Of course we expect the industry to appeal, but as this is only the first of a set of cases, further rulings against the industry could drive it out of business in Canada.”

Kennedy rubbished by bully-boy critics CHARLES Kennedy, the late Liberal Democrat leader, received vile, social-media abuse and vandalism in the three weeks running up to his death.

The Scottish Daily Mail reported that Kennedy, who lost his parliamentary seat of Ross, Skye and Lochaber, on 7th May, returned home after Election Night to a nasty “welcome home” present. “It was a Friday morning, when the rubbish gets taken out in and around Fort William,” Kennedy’s campaign

manager, Conn O’Neill, told the paper. “When Charles got back to the cottage, he discovered his bins upturned and left at the end of his driveway. It seemed as if someone had gone through them and spread the contents everywhere. “It’s a form of bullying that would not be tolerated in any playground. Charles tried to rise above it, but he couldn’t always. It must have hurt.” Most of the social-media abuse appeared to come from Scottish nationalists - or cybernats as they became known - because of his opposition to Scottish independence.

And most of it was focused on his well-known drink problems. When Kennedy shared a tweet urging supporters to “display a poster in your window in support of Charles”, a cybernat responded: “Just put an empty old whisky bottle in your window. It’s the same thing.” On a Facebook chatroom for Scottish National Party supporters in Skye, one user said he should “get back in the pub”. Another called him a “useless mess”. On Kennedy’s own Facebook page someone said he was “pished”, while another said he had been “on the

drinky-poos again”. A Twitter user, whose profile carried an SNP logo, dubbed him a “drunken alcoholic a**ehole”, while another called him an “alkie c**t”. One of Scotland’s most senior Lib Dem officials told the paper: “I have never known aggression like it in 30 years of politics. He and his staff were shouted at on doorsteps, and had leaflets thrown in their face. But the worst of it happened online, where he was just monstered. The official himself declined to be identified because of fear of SNP cyber-bullies and vandalism.

WEALTHY foreign investors are behind the recovery of the Spanish property market, according to figures released by Spain’s registrars’ society and published by the Financial Times.

Spain’s real estate market has been stuck in the doldrums since 2008, when it crashed following the global financial crisis. House prices lost more than 35%, and some parts of the country saw prices tumble more than 40%. However, recent statistics suggest that the property market is stabilising, especially in areas around the Mediterranean coast which are more popular with overseas buyers. The struggling euro has made it even cheaper for international investors to buy property in Spain. Since the European Central Bank embarked on its quantitative easing programme earlier this year, the euro has plunged to an eightyear low when compared with the British pound. Foreign investors are enjoying the lowest rates they’ve seen in years, and there’s anecdotal evidence that Swiss and American buyers are coming to Spain in increasing numbers. However, fewer Russian

Foreign currency fueling property market revival investors are snapping up property, probably because of the rouble’s dizzying collapse, while stricter rules on currency transfers will have kept out investors from some other countries. Spain’s “golden visa” scheme is also helping to boost the market. More than 500 foreigners have taken advantage of it so far, and it’s likely to encourage more buyers from overseas. The scheme, introduced in October 2013, grants non-EU foreigners citizenship if they invest at least 500,000 euros in Spanish property. The requirements were recently relaxed to allow a greater number of people to enjoy the benefits it offered. And it is not only the residential market that’s flooded with foreign money. The commercial sector has seen a huge impact from foreign investment funds. According to CBRE Spain, half of the 10.2bn euros invested in commercial real estate last year came directly from foreign funds. Another 2.5bn came from SOCIMIS (sociedades cotizadas de inversión en el mercado inmobiliario). That’s the Spanish equivalent of a real estate investment trust (REIT) - investments in property that can be traded like shares on exchanges, and often backed heavily by foreign investors. Patricio Palomar, director of research at CBRE Spain told the Financial Times: “With their arrival three years ago, opportunistic international

Carolina is new President CAROLINA Darias is new leader of the Canarian Parliament.

For the first time in three decades, the leader of the regional chamber is female, and her appointment is seen as something of a surprise. The 49-year-old, deputy head of Gran Canaria’s PSOE, says her appointment ushered in “a new era in which transparency, social

commitment and ethics will be part of our daily life”. In her first speech as President, Darias said: “There are so many women and men who have struggled to achieve a proper Canary way of life. I demands solutions and improvements in their daily lives.” Darias was described by one commentator as being a president “of consensus and understanding. She has

the vision and ambition for a sustained course of action to ensure the Canary Islands moves forward”. She is a well-seasoned politician and is a fine, compromise leader after negotiations between PSOE and CC dragged on for weeks. Darias has a Law Degree from the University of La Laguna, and has been a Councillor in Las Palmas. She then became a Member of Parlia-

ment of the Canary Islands, holding a job in the Health department. Later, she became Director of Planning, Urbanism and Housing before becoming a Government Delegate in 2011. Darias, a previous member of the Gran Canaria Cabildo, is seen as a tough but fair politican who has the difficult job of uniting a politically devided local government.

“The driver’s dead, you’ve got no guard. We’re stuck down in the underground. I think, ‘George this could be it mate – this could be where it all ends for you.’” - 7/7 survivor George Roskilly On the morning of July 7, 2005 four British-born suicide bombers launched an attack on London’s transport system. Within an hour 52 people were killed and over 750 injured in the deadliest attack on the capital since the Blitz. Ahead of the tenth anniversary of the 7/7 bombings, survivors, victims and rescuers remember the events of that morning in this new documentary for ITV. Combining the eyewitness testimony of more than 20 individuals, including some who have not spoken about it before, The 7/7 Bombing - Survivors’ Stories focuses on the hour between the first three explosions on the tube system at 8.50am and the final explosion just before 9.50am on a bus in Tavistock Square. Commuters on a Circle line train which was devastated by a bomb at Edgware Road give their personal insights into the moment the explosion happened, and its aftermath. Passenger Jacqui Putnam describes the immediate aftermath of the explosion, as the windows were blown out. She says: “The air was full of tiny shards of glass – and they glittered.” Tim Coulson was travelling on a tube train going in the opposite direction and was among a group of passers-by who broke out of their train to try to help those injured by the blast. He says: “Instinct alone drove me to help, not knowing where I was going really.” Tim entered the bombed carriage to find a scene of devastation. He says: “What I did see immediately on the floor was a passenger lying conscious on the floor. A gentleman I now know is David.” With minimal first aid skills and no equipment Tim had little to offer the seriously injured man other than the presence of another human being. David says: “He was just a voice to me, Tim.” Having made David as comfortable as he could, Tim was then confronted by the sight of a charred corpse - which he later found out was the remains of the bomber Mohammed Sidique Khan. At almost the same time, also on the Circle line, another bomb detonated in the second carriage of a train just outside Aldgate. Michael Henning, who was in the carriage next to the bomber, described being caught in a yellow and orange explosion. He says: “It was so quick, there was no time to blink.” Fellow passengers Thelma Stober and Kira Mason were both in the bombed compartment. Just three feet from the explosion, Kira was flung backwards and pinned to the wall of the buckled compartment by metal and debris. Thelma was blown through the doors of the still moving train and landed between the tracks. She says: “I opened my eyes and found myself on the train track partially underneath the train – partly outside. I could see people on the floor of the train and I could see people lying around. People were screaming and crying.” Kira was just three feet away from the bomb when it exploded and was blown back by the blast, leaving her left arm trapped in the tangled remains of the carriage. She says: “I think I’m in this terrible dream. It’s very quiet, I can’t hear anything and I can’t move. Then in this dream this voice comes and says, ‘What’s your name?’’ Stephen was in the line of evacuated passengers walking along the tracks back to Aldgate, when he was compelled to try and offer assistance. He entered the bombed carriage, and tried to look after Carrie Taylor, a young woman who had been blown backwards onto the laps of two passengers still in their seats. He says: “She seemed relatively peaceful. Every now and again she would try to communicate. I would just do my best to keep her calm and tell her everything was ok – and that we would be out of here soon.” When the emergency services reached Aldgate they discovered that Carrie had died as result of her injuries. Her father John describes the terrible wait he and his wife endured before learning of the loss of his daughter. He says: “We never thought that she had been seriously injured or lost her life. You were hoping beyond all hope that she was stuck somewhere – helping other people. It was ten days after the event that Carrie was formally identified.” Just a few seconds after the two explosions on the Circle line there was a third blast 70ft below ground on the Piccadilly Line near Russell Square. The bomb on the packed train in the confines of the narrow tunnel killed 26 passengers and injured more than 340. Sajda Mughal was one of the hundreds of passengers trapped underground near Russell Square, and recalls terrified passengers screaming and banging on the windows. She says: “I believe I shut down because I was waiting for death to come.”

Celebrity MasterChef BBC1, 20:30

The second week of heats continues as the four remaining celebrities fight for a place in the semi-finals. Their first challenge is a relay invention test. Each team must create a main course and a pudding between them. Each team member has 30 minutes to make their contribution to the dishes, but they can’t communicate with one another. Next, the teams are sent out on their first mass catering challenge. They have to make lunch for over 100 members of staff at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club home to the Wimbledon tennis tournament. Finally, they must cook a faultless two-course meal that will not only be judged by John and Gregg, but also by past Celebrity MasterChef champion Phil Vickery, and previous finalists Christopher Biggins, and Andi Peters, who know exactly what standards they expect.

Top Gear BBC2, 20.00 This week’s episode of Top Gear features two films that were shot for the last series. In the first film, Jeremy, Richard and James immerse themselves in the lifestyle of the traditional classic car enthusiast. Armed with affordable classics including a Fiat 124 Spyder, a Peugeot 304 Cabriolet and an MGB GT, the trio set off on an adventure that includes brown beer, breakdowns and a hair-raising classic car show. In the second film, Clarkson, Hammond and May try to become lifestyle leisure enthusiasts with the help of some incredibly cheap lifestyle leisure vehicles. Restricted to a maximum budget of £250, the trio buy three massive mileage SUVs - a Vauxhall Frontera, a Jeep Cherokee and a Mitsubishi Shogun - and embark on a series of action-packed challenges that include battling with the Stig’s ‘Leisure Activity Cousin’ and a race which has terrifying consequences for the loser.

Dispatches Channel 4, 20:00

Britain’s blood pressure is going through the roof, linked to heart attacks and strokes costing the NHS £2 billion a year. Part of the solution is to eat less salt but Dispatches asks if this is a battle we are really prepared for. Making the effort to watch what you are eating might not be enough. Testing a number of Britain’s best-known food brands, reporter Tazeen Ahmad reveals surprising evidence that suggests worrying inaccuracies in the labelling of salt content. Nearly two thirds of the products tested contained more salt than stated on the label, including some aimed at children. Dispatches also uncovers evidence that suggests the government’s salt reduction plan has been influenced by food companies, some of whom said lowering salt content would compromise the taste of their product. A new study, featured in the programme, asks if we’d notice the difference if the salt content of food was halved.

imagine… Jeff Koons: Diary Of A Seducer BBC1, 22.35

Gigantic balloon dogs, rows of vacuum cleaners, the colourful, the commonplace, the shiny and ephemeral - American artist Jeff Koons makes ‘poor’ objects into something rich people desire. As his retrospective travels from the Whitney Museum in New York to the Pompidou in Paris, and now the Guggenheim in Bilbao, imagine… examines the controversial artist. Raised by his furniture-maker father and seamstress mother, and spending his childhood selling wrapping paper and sweets door-todoor for pocket money, Koons took up an apprenticeship at the cutting edge Arts Institute in Chicago and embarked on a career chalking up the highest prices ever recorded for modern art. This film looks at just who Jeff Koons is and what it is that makes his work so different. Will his balloons float above the art market bubble and hold their place in the history of art?

The Interceptor BBC1, 21.00

The Unit’s war of attrition on Roach (Trevor Eve) and his gang is beginning to take effect. Under pressure and low on drugs and money they’re forced to turn to a new foreign supplier, a Norwegian nicknamed The Viking. The Unit know how vital The Viking (Christian Rubeck, pictured) could be in learning more about the crew they’re targeting, but he’s proving frustratingly hard to pin down. Clever and terrifyingly ruthless, The Viking thwarts the Unit at every turn and the team find themselves at odds with each other about the best way to proceed. Meanwhile, Ash’s (O-T Fagbenle) old friend Stacey (Ruby Wild), a former addict indebted to him for his help in getting clean, thinks she might have found a way to pay him back for his kindness. But when her attempt to help Ash with the case puts her life in danger, Ash’s search for the Norwegian becomes deeply personal. Unable to leave his anger at work, Lorna (Jo Joyner) is no longer sure she recognises the man she married. While Kim (Anna Skellern) gets closer to Martin (Charlie De Melo), she finds herself questioning, like Lorna, whether this job and a personal life are compatible. With Stacey on his conscience, Ash and his colleagues close in on The Viking. If they fail this time, the city will be flooded with a ton of dangerous drugs and Roach will be a step closer to achieving his ambitious expansion plans.

Kids in Crisis? Channel 4, 22:00

Across the UK parents are being separated from their sick children. Some, as young as 13, are being placed hundreds of miles from home. Cuts to mental health services mean in some places the right treatment is just not available locally. This programme tells the story of four families struggling to get the best care for their children. Three quarters of all mental illness begins in childhood. But only six per cent of the mental health budget is spent on under-18s. Oli is 13 and lives in Cornwall. He has autism, epilepsy and severe anxiety. If Oli’s condition deteriorates further he may need inpatient psychiatric care. But there are no psychiatric beds in Cornwall so Oli could be sent to another county. Beth is 15, and home is in Hull. But she has severe mental health issues and since her local psychiatric unit was closed due to NHS restructuring she is being treated 120 miles away from her family.

Exposure: How To Buy Your Way Into Britain

26th June - 2nd July 2015

T hursday

ITV1, 22.40

As the Government looks to take an increasingly hardline approach to immigration, Exposure investigates a massive loophole that remains at the heart of our system – sham marriage. In March this year new rules were introduced to tighten up regulations and cut the number of sham marriages taking place in Britain. Featuring undercover filming, How to Buy Your Way into Britain reveals that despite the promised Government crackdown, racketeers are still making millions by organising sham marriages, forging passports and human trafficking. The programme includes covertly filmed footage of sham marriage fixers, with one describing fake brides as ‘puppets’ and boasting about the number of illegal weddings they are able to organise every year. They tell an undercover reporter they couldn’t care less about the change in the law, and plan to carry on regardless, exploiting vulnerable women and making huge amounts of cash at the taxpayers’ expense. One says: “It’s too soft here, the system… This whole game is peanuts.” Eminent lawyer and former CPS chief crown prosecutor Nazir Afzal views the footage, and says: “All of it is criminal… And it demonstrates how big a scale of the problem we face.”

Superhospital ITV1, 21.00 Superhospital is a brand new documentary series set in the Royal Derby Hospital, which provides healthcare on a massive scale. Over eight thousand staff treat one million patients a year. It’s a place where lives begin and lives are saved every day of the week. This series offers a peek behind the scenes at one of the newest and largest single sited hospitals in the country, telling the stories of those people – from surgeons to security guards, doctors to domestics, who all play a part in helping patients and keeping the hospital running. Through intimate and revealing footage, the series gets under the skin of staff as they share patient’s moments of drama, joy and sadness. Episode 2 features the hospital maintenance boys Martin and John, who also double up as the hospital fire and rescue team. Helicopters can’t land until the boys are in their positions so when they get a call about an incoming emergency, they must drop everything and run. Susie is one of the most experienced A&E consultants working with both adults and children. One minute she is treating a man with a life threatening haemorrhage, the next she is trying to understand why 2-year-old Frank has been fitting. Susie reveals that even consultants can have self doubt, but that she’d rather ask for help from her colleagues than be an arrogant know it all! In the Macmillan unit, consultant Venkata is meeting one of the hospital’s newest inpatients, Glynn, who has just been diagnosed with a tumour in his lung. Only time will tell if the treatment will be successful and Venkata knows that a difficult time lies ahead for Glynn and his family. Elsewhere in the hospital, consultant surgeon Arthur uses a Motown soundtrack to create a relaxed atmosphere in his theatre, housekeepers Collette and Sarah are keeping up spirits on the elderly ward, and the domestic team reveal an unusual cleaning method. We see how all of the staff in different departments care for patients who come to the Royal Derby in their own unique way.

Twenty per cent of criminals are believed to be responsible for more than 80% of the crime in the UK. Tackle these hardcore ‘career criminals’ and crime rates will tumble; at least that’s the theory. This programme meets two brothers, neither of whom are strangers to the law. Tom is 27 and has spent more than six years behind bars. His younger brother Ben is just 19 and hasn’t yet seen the inside of a prison cell. With help from a specialist team of police officers with one of the best success rates in the county for tackling reoffending, Tom is finally trying to go straight and turn his life around, just as Ben starts to follow in his criminal footsteps. Can Tom and the cops prevent Ben from making the same mistakes Tom did before it’s too late? And, after years behind bars, what hope is there of getting a regular job and building a ‘normal life’, even when you want to?

By Jamie Droo FOR many years in Tenerife, artistes could come to the Island with their show and there would be an abundance of work available, providing, of course, it was entertaining.

Around six years ago things seemed to change, and where venues were forced to close through lack of custom, and others cancelled their entertainment programme to survive, there would be artistes out of work. Not such a long time ago, many entertainment venues would advertise two shows, and they’d be busy at 9pm, ready for a 10pm show, followed by another one at 11pm. As this format has been tailored to suit visitation and custom, there has been a lack of balance in the ratio of time slots for shows and acts. And as work has become more difficult to source, some have decided to return to their homelands. Others have been lucky enough to be one of the more popular shows and haven’t really experienced any hardship. There are a select few, however, who have been so passionate about staying here and working that they have reinvented themselves, or collaborated with fellow-performers in other projects. This week I’m writing about those who have, in the face of adversity, applied their talent to these new projects and enjoyed huge success. I must add that these collaborations and new projects have not always occurred because there’s been no work. For the most part, they have come from two professional entertainers wanting to try something new and gain more experience - or even to realise a

Re-invention rife in the reef

d r e a m that has been at the back of their minds for some time. I’ll start with a couple of lads who have worked as individuals, but have gained great success by forming a duo two years

a g o . They have even won awards as Best Newcomers at the Tenerife Entertainment Awards. Phenomenon were formed after Ollie Cusack and Luke Carey

wanted to do something different. And before long, they were picking up gigs all over the place as a party duo, covering all kinds of songs featuring Ollie on guitar and Luke on lead vocals. Phenomenon are still gigging here, but both guys have side-stepped in to various projects with other artistes. Ollie and Stephen Tyler were founder members of the Midnight Riders, a similar set-up to Phenomenon but with a completely different style of music, drawing on their rock genre experience. After a while, Stephen was offered the lead singing role with the Vagabonds at The Bulls Head, Parque de la Paz. Meanwhile, the Midnight Riders kept the same format, but Simon Roberts joined Ollie, and they continued with the same success. Going back to Luke Carey, he and Pip Brown have been getting great reviews for their Jersey Boys Show, featuring the songs of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Pip also performs a Michael Buble tribute and, at some of his venues, the show has been adapted to include Sam Saxo, Tenerife’s No.1 saxophonist. Sam also works alongside Shiel Campbell in a relatively new show, The Soul Commitments, tributing songs from The Commitments film. This coming and going really does demonstrate why the entertainment scene is referred to as a “circuit”. Things move around a circuit and,

whether it be a race car or an entertainer, the word means the same thing, and it is wonderful to see artistes able to keep things fresh and new - and keep re-inventing themselves. It makes the entertainment scene one of the most vibrant in the world of holiday destinations. At Amandas bar in Torviscas, Sean King, an Elvis act and resident compere, has teamed up with Neil Diamond tribute singer Charlie Hodge to form a show featuring Showaddywaddy songs. This Leicester band had a string of hits throughout the Seventies and early Eighties and, along with their “Teddy Boy” attire, they were hugely popular. And these two experienced Tenerife performers portray their style so well. Years ago, John Hylton used to work as a Neil Diamond tribute and, on his recent return to Tenerife, he and his two sons, Alan and Harry, have formed a harmony trio called Volcanic. The three guys cover a wide range of songs and are a brand-new show to the scene, currently looking to fill their diary for the summer. But what is being promoted and talked

about on social networks is a new collaboration, and a complete change of direction for both involved in The Memphis Belles. Vanessa Vee, a hugelysuccessful performer, was an original member of comedy duo The Sisters Of Doom years ago. She has also seen success as a comedienne, as well as tributing Bette Midler. Now, though, she has teamed up with another female vocalist, Jacqui Peters, who has been a Shirley Bassey tribute act for many years in Tenerife, to form this unique and exciting new harmony duo. They feature songs from the likes of the Andrews Sisters, such as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. I believe this will be a brilliant show, even before I have seen or heard them. I imagine the quality will be exceptional, knowing what both performers have put in to their own shows. And with the talent they possess as individuals, it can be nothing but a roaring success. The re-invention of artistes seems to be trending here right now, and it also contributes to demonstrating how diverse the talent is in Tenerife.

Venture’s Char-ming brand new restaurant PICTURESQUE La Caleta is famous for its lazy pace, gorgeous sunsets and fine dining. Most of the restaurants focus on ocean fayre, and this has left a gap in the market. The hugely successful Venture Restaurants noticed this and last week they opened their newest restaurant Char. This restaurant will do to Spanish cuisine what the excellent Empire in the Safari Centre did for British food. The menu encapsulates the spirit of a traditional Spanish restaurant, but blends it with a modern feel, incorporating dishes from a variety of regions. The first surprise you will have at Char is the decor and feel of the restaurant. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but I can tell you it is the only restaurant in Tenerife which gives you that “capital” feeling. For me, it was like being back in London - the sight and warmth of the arrival, combined with the open-plan kitchen, took me back to the West End. There are two types of experience in Char. You can have a traditional table which has comfort because Char’s capacity is kept to a cosy level, rather than cramming in extra seats. The second option is to take a seat at the Show Kitchen. This is

where the real fun is as you relax with a glass and watch the kitchen staff at work. And even though it’s very early days, they work like a well-oiled machine. Head chef Samuel Hernandez needs no introduction, and the owner, Rob, always had him in mind for Char. He works with a soux chef and a couple of assistants. One of the signs of a quality head chef is the way he organises the kitchen, maintains control and remains on top of every aspect of the cooking process. It was a joy to watch Samuel and his attentive team. A couple of the dishes demanded a higher standard of presentation and the concentration the chefs gave

was amazing. One dish saw an interesting tower of king prawns and scallops in a rich broth. It took some skill to get the shellfish to stay upright without falling into the bisque! Char features a stateof-the-art Josper charcoal oven. This is a brilliant tool in the modern kitchen because it is part-grill and part-oven. The Josper can cook up to 800 degrees Fahrenheit, but Samuel uses a 300f setting. This enables him to control the cooking to the second, and it’s especially helpful with meat dishes. My dining companion, for example, wanted his steak done crispy on the crust but rare in the centre. The Josper helps the chef control the process

easier than with a conventional grill, while retaining the BBQ taste. As with all the Venture Restaurants, the only problem is what to order from the stunning menu. For the review, I went for a variety of starters. The menu gives you over halfa-dozen choices in each section, so you can try a hot or cold starter, different salads or signature options. The garlic prawns were large and had been cooked in halfcloves, which gave them a fresh taste. Samuel also cooked them just through so they were still moist. There is nothing worse than a dry prawn! The salt-and-pepper chicken wings I’m sure will become a restaurant favourite. They were big and tender, with that home-cooked feel. The sign of a good flavour is when you have to ask for some bread to mop up the sauce afterwards! The next two starter dishes were something you have probably never tried before. I like a good cerviche dish, and Char has a variety of options. I watched a party next to us enjoy the tuna and salmon cerviche, so I went for the market fish and grapefruit option. On this night, the fish was pompano, which is not a usual offering in restaurants here. It is a deep-sea fish and thus, a lazier species, which

means the meat is leaner and tastier. Served raw with an onion, pepper and crunchy corn salad, it is the fresh grapefruit which gives the dish the tang that brings it all alive: the full flavour of the fish with the citrus of the grapefruit and the crunch of the corn. Superb. Finally, the Char-style Canarian roast pork rounded off the starters. This is the closest you will get to pork carpaccio. It’s served waferthin, with fine olive oil, rock salt, cracked fresh pepper and a dusting of paprika. All the pork produce is sourced direct from a local farm, and the pigs are reared with a special, bespoke diet. They are then prepared to Char’s recommendations, which ensures all the pork dishes are made to the house standard. And the difference shines through. After a brief rest, it was on to the main course and the 50-day aged ribeye, on-the-bone steak which like all Venture Restaurants comes from Meat Boutique butchers. Tastes do vary, but for me it has to be rare - and this is where the Josper really comes into its own, as I’ve previously explained. The dish comes with a heating plate, so you can tweak to your exact requirements and keep

the steak warm. Not that I needed the plate too long! When it is aged this way and properly rare it is a real treat as the flavour shines through. The steak was accompanied by some brilliant mini-fries, which are flash fried and as thin as string. Well-seasoned, they are a lovely sidedish. The main menu has lots of meat options, and the tables around me were raving about the pork chops. I wonder why! While Char could easily be called the first steakhouse in the Adeje region, it is so much more than that. The desserts list demands inspection, with its chocolate three-way and special toffee-based cortado - fine choices! And a special word for the cheese board, which is a real Canarian affair. La Palma and La Gomera cured and smoked cheeses are served alongside the only hand-made manchego in the world. This is imported from central Spain and is worth the trip itself. When you add the famous Venture Restaurant wine list, which includes a magnificent chateauneuf du pape, it’s easy to see how well Char will be received. Reservations are strongly advised and can be made by calling 922 168 222.

26th June - 2nd July 2015

By Vanessa Vee THIS week’s article is quite amusing to say the least because last year, at the TUI Charity Open Day, I was the lucky winner of a seven-night stay at the Costa Los Gigantes hotel, right here on the West coast of the Island.

For those who don´t know me personally, my life is somewhat busy to say the least. I run a business with many offices, have a part-time sales job, as well as singing on the cabaret circuit on a night. And on top of all that, I have two young children! So, as much as I have been anxious to visit this hotel, I’ve just never had the time to rearrange and take a whole week off. Anyway, the prize was heading for its expiry date - and that had already been kindly extended by the hotel. Thus, we decided we would go as a family for the week, and what whatever couldn’t be rearranged, we would simply have to commute. Check-in was just me and the kids because the other half was working on a boat party, so I ventured up with suitcases - a decent car park, and porters to assist. We checked in with ease, and were taken to our apartment in the “Holiday Village” by electric buggy, much to my little girl’s amusement. A good-sized, onebed suite, immaculately clean and wellequipped for us, was to be our home for the week. It was a good 10-minute stroll from the thick of it all, which proved to be a slight problem when

What a stroke of luck!

I broke my toe later in the week by stubbing it on the pram! The entertainment programme is massive, because, basically, First Choice use this as their Holiday Village through the summer months. That’s why they provide a large entertainment team, and the hotel also have an inhouse animacion team, so during the evening, we had choices of live entertainment, starting from 7pm right through to 11pm. After that, there was a piano bar for final drinks, which was open until 1am. The hotel has a capacity of around 1,700 occupants, and has been purpose built, which becomes obvious when wandering around because virtually everything has been thought through with care. Our room was near the children’s waterslide baby pool, and there is a large swimming pool where a lot of the daytime activities take place. A large buffet restaurant is near to the pool for the lunchtime trade, but there is also a daytime snack bar with a daily barbeque choice, as well as paella and the usual burgers, pizza, pasta etc. There are another two pools in this area, and these did tend to be a little quieter. For those resting and recuperating, it is possible to hire out private Balinese beds at 20 euros a day, and the views are quite breathtaking, with La Gomera in very close eyeshot. As we wand e r e d

around the village, we saw a large, soft play area, tennis courts, beach volleyball, zipline and wall-climbing. Activities are on offer all day for the children, though I must point out that the First Choice programme is not useable if you book through the hotel because you must be a guest of the tour operator. There is a creche which takes babies from six months to three years for a twohour session, for which you pay. But it does include a baby sleepclub from 8 till 11, three nights a week. The crèche nannies were absolutely fantastic and my little one just loved going there. Evening entertainment was also top standard, with the hotel team probably the best I have ever experienced. The mini-disco, the in-house show and the other live acts were all at the top of the scale. The buffet was excellent, with a wonderful variety and standard of food on offer. Every night has a theme, whether it be Oriental, Italian, Mediterranean etc, but what I also liked was the fact that depending on the length of your stay, there is also an a la carte restaurant which you can book into. I am not a lover of allinclusive hotels - I’m a massive believer in supporting the economy and local businesses. However, this was a gift because, with having two children, I totally get why families do opt to go all-inclusive. THE BALD TRUTH... By Carl from Robot

IF it’s a woman she gets sympathy, but if its a man, he is ridiculed. I’m talking baldness, and the plain old truth is that you either accept it or you don’t.

When I started losing my hair at 32, I was devastated. It was not only my pride and joy but a symbol of my work. I wouldn’t go into crowded areas or sit in bright lights, and I even spent thousands on laser therapy to save what I had left - to no avail. I get asked all the time by guys losing their hair what they should do, but there simply aren’t many solutions. Okay, you could wear a wig - sorry, toupee. You could get implants or have hair tattooed on to your scalp to resemble what you had before. But why bother? I’ve seen few good cover-up jobs and often, they look worse than thinning or bald heads. Yet many strive to find a solution to what is a disturbing problem for some. Actually, I wouldn’t want my hair back because I prefer being bald. No one here has seen me with hair, and couldn’t imagine me with it. So, what to do if this is happening to you? My advice is to go as short as you dare. Keeping it as short as pos-

sible will make it appear thicker. But any sort of growth at the sides or back will only enhance the thinner top - and so will sticking any products on it to create volume. I always say that if there were a cure, we wouldn’t see bald celebs, or people with money, walking around with thinning tops. Yes, you can have implants to fill-in certain areas, but there is NO cure for baldness. I even have an acquaintance who wears baseball caps every day to cover up what he doesn’t like. It’s amazing what lengths some people will go to. Look at Prince Wil-

liam! Will someone please lend him a pair of clippers because he looks ridiculous. Yet his stylist hasn’t the guts to tell him so. I know it’s harsh, but if it is going, then get rid of it! There’s nothing worse than seeing someone trying to hold on to the last few strands of hair, trying to give the illusion that they still have his crowning glory. Yes, I know it’s a big thing to lose your hair. I’ve been through it myself - but trust me, shorter is better than any comb-over. So if someone you know is suffering with this shortage, please don’t ridicule him. You may find it funny, but to many guys, losing their hair can feel like losing there manliness. And to you guys out there going through it, many people find a shaved or bald head sexy - so don’t lose all faith.

By Monica Dyson AS a youngster, my daughter suffered a certain amount of abuse. It wasn’t sexual or racial abuse, but a kind that can often be just as hurtful, particularly to young people.

It got so bad in her case that one day, I managed to intercept her purchase of a bottle of hair dye. She was going to dye her hair brown. Luckily, she withstood the taunts and became popular when a group called T’Pau came on the scene with a beautiful red-haired lead singer called Carol Decker. She has really never looked back, but she hasn’t forgotten. If you mock someone’s ethnicity, religion or sexuality, you can be called to account. But taunting someone because of the

colour of his or her hair is often deemed acceptable. The perpetrators get away with it because the victim has not yet achieved protection of the law. But it should be taken just as seriously. I know children can be cruel about fat classmates, or those who wear spectacles, and I experienced a few instances when starting to wear glasses at a young age, of getting called “four eyes” on a few occasions. By and large, teachers pick up on this, but they are less likely to pick up the “Ginger” taunts. It’s a fact that this bullying exists mostly at school. A year or so ago a number of pupils at a Yorkshire school or-

ganised a “Kick a Ginger Kid” Day. Inspired by the South Park cartoon programme, young people with ginger hair were set upon on their way to school and even kicked to the ground. Some of the injuries sustained were quite serious. What kind of upbringing have bullying children like these had? Carrot-top, coppertop, ginger minger, Ronald McDonald, Simply Red, Queen Elizabeth just some of the milder taunts in a typical redhead’s life. Reading striker Dave Kitson was furious when a Daily Star headline stated: “Kitson’s a right ginger whinger!” As was Steve McClaren when a radio caller described him as “a typical useless ginger bloke!” And yet redheads are distinctive,

their colour having great cultural resonance. Red is the colour of heat, danger and warnings. And when applied to women, it is said to be the colour of sensuousness, excitement - and sometimes a fiery temper. There are some theories about persecution of redheads.

Some claim that it could be a throwback to antiIrish sentiment from the 19th century when the Irish, with a greater prevalence of red hair, were regarded as ethnically inferior. But others simply see it as a way of picking on someone different from what is perceived to be the norm. But redheads are fighting back and there is now an annual Worldwide Redhead’s Day. In 2013, some 5,000 redheads from 80 countries attended a global event in the Netherlands and obtained a place in the Guinness Book of Records for the biggest gathering ever of redheaded people. And there are Facebook groups like “Ginger with Attitude” to give support to other redheads. And at the

moment, redheads are definitely sought by television and cinema, such as: Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore; Damien Lewis, who played Henry VIII in the superb Wolf Hall; the beautiful Eleanor Tomlinson, who plays Demelza in Poldark; Sally Ann Matthews, as Jenny Bradley in Coronation Street; Christina Hendricks, in Mad Men; Geri Halliwell, from The Spice Girls, and Rita Hayworth, one of the most beautiful actresses of all. Other famous redheads through the years have included Alexander The Great, Napoleon Bonaparte, Cleopatra, Winston Churchill, Florence Nightingale, Mary Magdalene and, of course, Elizabeth I. And who can ignore Prince Harry, and that “very interesting” snooker player Steve Davis, although he’s now more of a silver fox? Yet one of his fellow players who did well in Sheffield at the World Snooker Championships this year, Anthony McGill, was called a “Ginger Ninja” by a commentator. Despite the prejudice these people often have to contend with, red hair is popular and rare - just 1% of the world’s population are true red. It has become fashionable in the past few years for women to dye their hair lurid shades of red, but they will never emulate the real thing. By and large, men are fascinated by red-haired women, with their hair, freckles, skintones and personality. And they are much sought after in Australia, being regarded as extremely beautiful there. So, Gingers everywhere, stand up for yourselves against the mousey masses … and celebrate your uniqueness!

King Fit is fit for a king SOMETIMES in life, it’s all about having the right advice. And the best advice is from someone who has been there and done it.

That motto applies to King Fit, which is owned by Daniel Gonzalez. King Fit, the King in Sport supplements, opened its doors on 13th Februray and hasn’t looked back. Daniel has more than 30 years of experience in the fitness industry and has owned two gyms in Tenerife. Now, all this knowledge and experience can be gleened by a trip to King Fit. He has a long list of sporting accomplishments. It all began un-

der the guidance of his uncle, Barry Davies, a former Mr New Zea-

enthralled by all the big men lifting some monster weights!

It left a mark on the youngster, who decided he wanted to do the same thing. He started training at the age of 11 and by 13 he entered his first contest coming 3rd in the bodybuilding and 5th in power lifting. At the age of 16, Daniel won the Junior East Midlands title and at 17, he became junior British champion. Back in Tenerife, he was heavyweight Canarian champion, and then Spanish heavyweight body-building champion. Eventually after a plethora of injuries, broken bones and torn tendons, it was time for him to call it a day. Or so he thought. Because at the tender age of 43, he has just competed in the Spanish national arm-wrestling championship!

Daniel finished third in the Masters section in his first contest. As a result of his new sporting ventures, Daniel has created an arm-wrestling club from the King Fit shop. Arm-wrestling days are on Tuesdays and Thursdays (6-8pm) and Daniel said: “This is not just for the biggest and strongest arms. There are a lot of techniques involved and also, there are different weight classes. So if you want to have a go, come and visit us! It’s fun, something different and, who knows, you may be good!” Daniel also helps with personal training and fitness advice, along with supplying the best products and knowledge available. So if you want to change that body, come to the King ... King Fit!

It’s in the best possible taste!

Doctor’s orders? We have got no chance!

By Sue McDonald

By Val Sainsbury

THE property sales market is still relatively slow, although we are definitely seeing signs of recovery. But many people are giving their property a bit of a facelift anyway.

MY blood is boiling as I write this, and here’s the reason why. This week, in a leading, British, national newspaper, a jubilant reader has written to its resident doctor, saying how “enormously well” she feels. This lady has overcome all her health problems, which were wrongly attributed to irritable-bowel syndrome and coeliac disease by her own GP, whom she had visited several times. Dissatisfied, she paid to see a private nutritionist, who diagnosed her with having candidiasis, which is the overgrowth of a type of yeast called candida. This was responsible for all her pain, bloating, nausea and a variety of other symptoms. The nutritionist advised her to eliminate yeast, dairy, soya, gluten, peanuts, caffeine, sugar and starchy veg-

It’s either to make it easier to sell, just to update it, or because some items need renewing. What was fashionable 20 years ago, when we first started in the business, can sometimes look outdated now. Together with natural wear and tear, particularly if the property is rented out, this means that many of the apartments we originally furnished are now in need of some tender, loving care. Many of the properties then featured busy, patterned fabrics, and there was lots of matching going on with curtains and bedspreads from the same material. Swags and tails were the order of the day with scoops of fabric and full-draped curtains. Much of the furniture we fitted all those years ago is still going strong, and we are now respraying lots of sideboards, etc, in whites and creams to make everything look more modern - at a fraction of the replacement. Personally, I prefer today’s more simplistic

styles, with eyelet curtains which use far less fabric, just a slight wave instead of a full gather, and the use of roller blinds and Japanese panels. These are 5-6 flat panels of material, which can be pulled across the window to create a simple panel effect. The advantages of these type of window dressings means that they collect less dust, and can be moved right off the window, which enables us to reveal our lovely views and fresh air over here. We can also suggest other uses for window dressings. In Royal Palm, particularly, and also in other studios, we have used Japanese blinds and vertical blinds not only at the windows, but also to create a division between the sleeping and living areas. Likewise, we have used rigid, vertical blinds

above a breakfast bar to section off the kitchen when not in use (and to hide those dirty dishes). Many of the sofa beds sold many years ago are still in good condition, and reupholstering them can be considerably cheaper than buying new. Mattresses should be replaced about every five years, and there are lots of new styles, including sprung-core and viso-elastic, which offer a fabulous combination of support and comfort without being too hot. At the end of the day, it´s all a question of taste and what you need to update. So whether you need a new mattress, your sofa recovered, your furniture resprayed, or some curtains replaced, call Deco Nuevo. We will come to your property and give you a free estimate, without obligation!

etables from her diet. After 12 weeks, she had lost 14lbs and felt wonderful. All she wanted to know, from the national-paper’s doctor, was for how long she should stay on this new eating plan. Was the doctor thrilled by the reader’s newfound good health? Was she grateful for the information, so she could spread the word and, thereby, help other readers? No. Not a bit of it. The nutritionist was vilified as possibly not being qualified, and we were told that cutting out the aforementioned foods would lead to this lady being “deprived of essential nutrients”. Since when did humans need yeast, dairy, soya, peanuts, gluten, caffeine, starchy vegetables and sugar to be healthy? Absolutely never! When several diabetic associations across the world advocate the eating of carbohydrates in the form of bread, cereals, etc, what chance have we got of turning round the global popu-

lation’s health? Our suffering is the big pharmaceutical companies’ bread and butter. What good are we to them if we are all glowing with health? If everybody were to adopt a low-carbohydrate way of eating, respected American doctor Joseph Mercola says that six of these companies would go out of business overnight. The demand for insulin would plummet, as would the demand for many other drugs prescribed to treat obesity-related conditions. A very good friend of mine was “thrown off ” a diet forum, because she wanted to tell the members about her success in coming off all her medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and, most importantly, diabetes. Were the forum members delighted to hear her news, which should have given them hope because they, too, might have suffered the same health problems? Again, NO! Not a bit of it. She told everyone how she had “gone lowcarb”, but the bigots disliked her for that. Maybe they were jealous of her success. Maybe they just wouldn’t be told. Her main “crime” was to speak up and criticise the theme of this particular forum, which involved people fasting for part of the week, and eating whatever they wanted on the remaining days. But, for whatever reason, off she jolly well had to go. Never mind that many of the forum’s dieters subsequently adopted a lowcarb regimen. They did this to speed up their weight loss, or kick-start it when they had reached a plateau. Some needed to reverse an actual weight gain, because this fasting method just wasn’t working for them, and was having the opposite effect for which they had hoped! She is such a beautiful, gracious lady, just wishing to share her joy, in the hope of helping others. What a weird, strange world we inhabit when others just don’t want to listen and learn.

TYRES form an integral part of the car, and the types recommended and permitted in both wear and depths of tread are for all-round safety of the vehicle’s occupants and other road-users.

Most people will replace worn tyres with second-hand rather than new, which could be as bad as, or worse than, the old ones in some instances! Currently, there is pressure on the Spanish Government by professionals to ban the sale of used tyres, sparked by their safety fears. Latest figures available show that around 300,000 cars are being fitted and driven with second-hand or worn tyres.

26th June - 2nd July 2015

Know your tyres

And manufacturers say that in some cases, over 80% of their sales feature these types, partly because of cost. Tyres are inspected routinely at each ITV for sizing and tyre depth, and the police may also inspect them to check that they comply with the current depth measurement of 1.6 millimetres across the centre of the tread, around the complete circumference. If they fail, you can be fined 200 euros per tyre - a costly outcome if you thought you were saving money when buying second-hand ones. Tyres, of course, must be of the correct size and fit for the vehicle, and information about options (if any exist) to those currently fitted to your car can be found on your Ficha Técnica. It is also important to make sure that the tyre pressures are correct, in accordance

with the manufacturer’s guidelines. You often find a sticker on the door, door-post or petrol flap of your car, showing recommended tyre pressures, or you can always ask your mechanic or look them up online. Although the minimum depth permitted by law is 1.6 millimetres, most manufacturers recommend changing the tyres when

they are worn down to three millimetres. This ensures that the car remains safe and is able to stop in the required time and distance. Differing weather conditions affect stopping distances: for instance, in wet conditions it would take a car with a tread of 1.6 millimetres an extra eight metres to stop when travelling at 50mph than if the tread were

three millimetres. Quite often, just by looking, you can identify badlyworn tyres because the principal grooves (the wide ones) will be much slimmer. The weight of the vehicle and the number of passengers and, or, goods being carried will also affect how quickly you can stop in the event of an

impending incident. So it is important to leave what is generally known as a safety gap from the car in front of you - and to take care when driving in differing conditions. When buying new tyres, be aware of their date of manufacture, which is shown on the tyre. For example, 5208 means the tyres were made in week 52 of the year 2008. So although they are new, often being sold “on offer”, they can be quite old, with possible degradation to the rubber. Most reputable garages and tyre companies will ensure the best deals for their customers. But if buying secondhand tyres, this information may be quite useful. Ask to inspect any second-hand tyres you purchase to ensure the depths are within the legal limits - and are not too old!

Vitolo stays!

By Roscoe THE madness that is CD Tenerife continued last week. Just 24 hours after saying he was quitting to return to Greek football, Tenerife captain Vitolo performed a Uturn and signed a new contract.

Stating that it was never about money he just wanted to feel wanted - he got his contract extension. Nobody comes out of this well. If Vitolo didn’t want to leave and didn’t want a new contract, why say he is leaving, then say he is happy to

sign a new deal? If director of football Alfonso Serrano didn’t want Vitolo to leave, why say

he was happy to rip up his contract? We have not heard the last on this story.

Meanwhile, we are another week down the road and still no new signings.

Local media claimed that Pedro Martin was going to sign a two-year contract worth 200,000 euros a season. The young striker tweeted that he was on holiday and signing nothing. Then Tenerife were linked with every locally-born player in professional football, excluding Barcelona’s Pedro and Real Betis defender Bruno. Omar Ramos said he wasn’t keen after Tenerife said they didn’t want him in January. Ayoze Garcia is loving life at New York Cosmos, alongside Raul and Marcos Senna, while Jeffren is more likely to sign for Wolves! Then there is the curious case of Iriome. He has just completed his best season in years at CD Lugo, and seems

to be one of Serrano’s main targets. He has always said he wanted to return to Santa Cruz one day, but he is well-liked at Lugo and seems settled. He is under contract for another season and Lugo are asking a fee starting at half-a-million euros. Tenerife, as Lugo knows, do not have any money to spent on players. So that move looks dead in the water. CDT has, like every club in the second division, been chasing Chuli. Real Betis will sell him for half-a-million. See above! Finally, Tenerife have been looking at three players based in Argentina. Pisano, Moreira and Tagliafico are the players involved. They sound more like an Italian law firm!

Beaten Hamilton turns sour LEWIS Hamilton, who feels he was “cheated” out of winning the Monaco Grand Prix, made fans aware of his feelings after finishing runner-up to team-mate Nico Rosberg in their F1 Austria clash on Sunday.

The Formula One world champion, who made a poor start from pole position and allowed Rosberg to take control of the race, claimed the German had beaten him only twice in eight races this season. In fact, Rosberg’s victory was his third, with Hamilton winning four and Sebastian Vettel finishing on top in the other showdown. But Hamilton simply refuses to concede he was beaten in Monaco, where he dominated the whole weekend - and the race itself - only to lose after making an unnecessary extra pit stop. But he and Mercedes were jointly to blame for a shocking error of judgement.

Although Hamilton has dominated qualifying this season, Rosberg has won three of the past four races and trails the British driver by just 10 points, with the Silverstone Grand Prix coming up on Sunday week (5th July). When told he couldn’t shrug off Rosberg in the fight for the F1 title, a defensive Hamilton said: “Not really. When you think about the places where points have been lost, it has been a pretty good year so far. He has done Barcelona and here - two out of eight isn’t too bad really. I’m happy with that. Hamilton added: “I have only had a couple of weekends where I have not been the strongest. Seven poles out of eight is pretty decent and perhaps, without Monaco, it wouldn’t be as close as it is now.” But he at least had had the grace to admit Rosberg was quicker in Austria and “did a fantastic job”, adding: “I’m not sure if he was quicker all weekend, but he was definitely quicker in the race.” In fact, Rosberg looked more convincing on all three days at the Aus-

trian Grand Prix, and was set to take pole in Saturday’s final qualifying session before spinning off. The German said: “We’ve been developing the clutch so that’s a lot better now, more consistent, and I’ve had a lot of great starts lately in the last four races and Sunday as well.” Following much criticism of Formula One being boring this season, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes former Ferrari and Mercedes technical director Ross Brawn could be the man to breath new life into the

sport - for drivers and fans alike. Horner said: “I think the strategy group is fairly inept. I keep saying that the commercial rights holder and governing body (FIA) should decide what F1 should be, and then put it on the table to the teams and say, ‘This is what we want the product to be; these are the rules; this is the entry form’. “Maybe you need an independent observer; someone not involved; someone like Ross Brawn, who understands the challenges and knows the business,

to write a specification for what a car or technical regulations should be.” Horner, the most impressive team chief in the paddock, has been identified by some as the most likely man to take charge of the headless sport, in which the FIA does not seem interested, while Bernie Ecclestone, 85 this year, appears incapable of reviving the sport he built up into a £1.5bn business. Horner added: “Formula One has a huge amount of following around the world, but we need to do a better

job. We have gone too far and it is too complicated. We need to bring it back to basics. “The cars are too easy to drive, and you don’t see drivers working as hard as they did a few years ago. You never hear a driver complaining about his neck these days. They want cars to be more of a challenge for drivers and, therefore, more of a spectacle. “For the teams to follow and understand is complicated enough. But for the fans, we need to keep it simple and get Grand Prix racing back to basics.”

Yigit marches on ANTHONY Yigit, Tenerife’s professional light-welterweight boxer, confirmed his potential with a one-sided victory over England’s Tony Owen in Copenhagen on Saturday.

The referee called a halt late in the seventh

round to prevent the Surrey fighter from suffering more damage after Yigit had pounded him throughout. The Swedish-born southpaw predicted a “slugfest” in defence of his WBC Baltic title, and it was! But the game Brit, who came forward at every opportunity, was tailor-made for the speedy champion’s persistent attacks. Yigit, who has a per-

manent home in Tenerife and trains at El Gym, in Las Chafiras, is now looking ahead to contest the European Union. “I promised an exciting fight and that’s exactly what I delivered,’’ said the Stockholm fighter. ‘’Tony was tough, but I was better. I pushed the pace and didn’t give him a chance to get into the fight. “But I’m in no rush

because I’m only 23 and still learning. I’m being guided carefully by my trainer and coach, Vassili Boguslavsky, and I am confident there are even better things to come.” His training partner, Adasat Rodriguez, the Spanish light-heavyweight champion from Santa Cruz, fights for the European Union title in France tonight (Friday).

Pete’s Hopping good night YOUNG Pete, now playing out of Hoppys Bar in Torviscas, has continued his fine start to the season with a second maximum and a 102 checkout as his team beat Emerald Shamrocks 7-1.

Something about “new tricks” springs to mind! And also maintaining his excellent early displays was Exiles skipper Jamie. His team’s 6-2 success at Bar 180 B included Jamie’s second 180 and a 120 finish, while visiting player Tony fired in his first

maximum. A 106 out from Craig helped leaders Boothen Army stay at the summit as they crushed Waterfall Warriors 7-1, and Bar 180 A cruised through the gears to whitewash the Playboys. But Fluff will be kicking himself after missing three darts at double top to beat boss man Richard. The Palms A v Palms B derby was nicked in the last rubber by the Pool Bar gang, while Emerald Shamrocks just pipped Pas O Nadas to retain fifth spot. Two more maximums came at The Phoenix for visiting Boothen Titans, one for John, and another for Jim. But only one point resulted

as Stokey Joe beat a slightly off-form Bubbles. Two matches were played last week by new Division 2 leaders Phoenix Flights. A catch-up match gave them a 5-3 win at Naughty Nautas on Thursday, and they went one better to

beat Bar Leones on Friday to put them five points clear. Barracuda Hunters had a minor setback as they lost at home to Clouseaus, while Spear Chuckers were held to a draw at Sundowners. Brian hit a new high checkout for this sec-

tion, albeit by a single point, with a 115 during Naughty Nautas’ 7-1 victory over Ourplace Playgirls. After a decent start, Gaffers Jucee Girls have now lost backto-back matches, this week’s being a 6-2 slump at home against Picassos.

Marilyns have also seen the wheels fall off a bit and they, too, experienced two defeats on the spin with a 6-2 loss at the hands of Summerlands. Elsewhere, Sandys Chippers put seven past Waterfall B, and rocketed five places up the table to sixth.

Surprise? It’s anyone’s title THERE are always shocks and upsets in the annual end-of-season singles’ tournament in the Direct Telecom Pool League. And this year was no different.

The open draw can lead to a few lopsided fields, but you still have to beat the players in front of you. There are a few surprise names among those who have

made it through to the finals night at Palms on 7th July. And those competing are: Gaffers Scott - Jester A Penguin - Palms A

Phoenix Adi - Waterfall Jay - Treehouse Treehouse Baker - Hammers C Paul - Hammers A Jester

Mark - Treehouse Shammy - Palms B Crown John - Pink A Colin - TPT Bluebell Tony - Hammers C

EZE does it for the Blues TENERIFE leisure company EZE Group are the new shirt sponsors for Birmingham City’s 2015-16 Championship season, having agreed a six-figure deal.

It is the Group’s second such sponsorship with the football club and continues a four-year commercial relationship between the organisations. The new season marks the 140th anniversary of the founding of Birmingham City and, along with welcoming back their 2012-13 sponsors, they will wear a revamped club crest to commemorate the occasion. Ian Dutton, head of commerce at Birmingham City, said: “Over the previous four-year relationship with us, and through their various positive initiatives, our supporters have truly embraced EZE Group. “We are absolutely delighted to have secured this magnificent, principal partnership with the club’s great friends and sponsors. And, collec-

tively, we couldn’t wish for a better brand to help us celebrate 140 years of Birmingham City Football Club.” During the new season, EZE Group will organise travel and hotel accommodation for the players and staff at away fixtures. and the company is also keen to use the sponsorship to promote its business concierge services to other major corporate organisations. Dominic O’Reilly, CEO of EZE Group, said: “As well as raising awareness of our brand, over the last few seasons we have worked hard to connect with the people that matter - Blues supporters. At the sponsorship launch, Mr O’Reilly presented a cheque for £15,583 to Colin and Becky Doyle, from Liam’s Smiles charity. It was set up by Becky to fight meningitis after Liam contracted the disease, and he is still receiving treatment. The funds were raised through the EZE Group Foundation at a golf day in Tenerife, and during a raffle at the end-ofseason Player of the Year Awards.

Cruyff coaching our youngsters DUTCH legend Johan Cruyff, one of the biggest names ever in football, is coming to Tenerife next month with other star names to conduct a coaching academy in Santa Cruz.

Cruyff will be joined by Christian Karembeu, Patrick Kluivert and

Luis Garcia, who will run this first series of Tenerife International Football Camps. The summer course, from Monday-Saturday (6th-11th July) is for children from six to 16 years of age. The RG Consultant & Sport Solutions company is responsible for organising this new initiative, which is based not only on education, development and skills. The youngsters will

also be schooled in discipline, together with how to foster personal relationships and positive attitudes among team members. In short, this activity aims to instil important values associated with football, and the development of the youngsters as individuals and socially. The campus, under the watchful eye of co-ordinator Zeben Hernandez, will also pass on expert advice on training and

nutrition. Places are limited to 150 participants and the price is 120 euros. However, families who want to register two or more children will receive a family discount, which trims the enrolment fee to 100 euros for the second child. The price includes liability insurance, training and equipment, and a balanced breakfast at mid-morning. For more information, call 609 890 546.

Paris chase Games again Female flops flip SPAIN’S female footballers are demanding the coach be sacked after their poor World Cup showing in Canada. Ignacio Quereda has coached the national side for 27 years, but they hold him responsible for the solitary point they gained from three matches. As a result, the ladies, ranked 14th, have failed to qualify for next year’s Olympics in Rio. In contrast, though not quite at this level, Granadilla Ladies made up

for a last-gasp, 2014 disappointment by gaining promotion to their First Division with a nail-biting, play-off win against Betis. They beat them 3-1 at home in the first leg, then scored the vital goal after Betis had raced into a 2-0 lead in front of their own fans. It meant a 3-3 overall scoreline, but the El Mecano-based team went through because away goals counted double.

PARIS is bidding to stage the 2024 Olympics, which would mark 100 years since it previously hosted the event.

The city has lost three previous bids:10 years ago it was beaten by London for the 2012 Olympics, and also failed to land the 2008 and 1992 Games. The French capital last held the Olympics in 1924, which subsequently became labelled the “Chariots of Fire” Games after the film celebrating the achievements of British runners Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell. World Rugby chief Bernard Lapasset, who has been appointed chair-

man of Paris 2024, said in a statement: “Paris is delighted to officially confirm its bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games - an

important first milestone as our host city campaign journey commences. “We believe that this bid, and our goal to host

the 2024 Games, will excite, unite and enthuse the people of Paris, our entire nation and lovers of Olympic and Paralympic sport all over the world.’ Denis Masseglia, President of the French national Olympic committee (CNOSF), said the bid would be planned in line with the IOC’s new “Agenda 2020” strategy, aiming for more flexible, less costly event. He added: “In line with the IOC’s Agenda 2020 strategy, Paris 2024 promises a feasible and flexible Games concept that will be an authentic reflection of the diverse and dynamic cultural, social, environmental and sporting traditions of our local communities, the city and the French people.”
