Police criticised over John Palmer murder

Continued from front.

The 64-year-old had undergone open-heart surgery a few days previously and police did not suspect foul play.

But astonishingly, on Wednesday the story became a murder inquiry after an autopsy revealed that Palmer had died as a result of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Initially, an East of England Ambulance spokesman said medics were called to Palmer’s home at 5.30pm last Wednesday.

“Two ambulance crews and a rapidresponse vehicle attended to a report of a man in his sixties who was unconscious and not breathing. Despite their best efforts, the patient was declared dead at the scene.”

It is believed that the medics at the scene thought the open chest wound was connected to the surgery 48 hours previously.

A murder investigation has now been launched by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.

In a statement, Essex Police said: “We’ve launched a murder investigation following the death of a 64-year-old man in South Weald, Brentwood. Officers were called just before 6.30pm on Wednesday, June 24, by the ambulance service after the body of a man was discovered by his family at an address in Sandpit Lane.

“The man has been identified as 64-yearold John Palmer, of South Weald. A postmortem examination was carried out on Wednesday, June 30, 2015, and determined the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the chest.”

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Werrett, leading the investigation, said: “My team would like to speak to anybody who was around Sandpit Lane between 4pm and 6pm on Wednesday June 24.

The area is rural but is often used by dog walkers and joggers.”

But the police forces are already coming in for some fierce criticism.

Ex-Metropolitan Flying Squad Commander, John O’Connor told The Sun newspaper: “John Palmer is one of the most notorious criminals in the last three decades.

“It is utterly incompetent that his death was dismissed as natural causes. When someone as notorious as John Palmer is discovered dead on your patch, then surely it’s commonsense to be absolutely sure of the facts about how he died.”

He added: “It seems to me this was a terrible mistake for which somebody should resign. It’s one of the most terrible mistakes in policing I’ve ever heard of.”

Police have not confirmed whether they have any suspects and at the time of writing precious few details have been released to the public. The Palmer residence was in a secluded area of Brentwood and it is believed that there would have been stateof-the-art security systems in place.

Questions have been asked about why it

took so long for the police to arrive at the scene and, also, why it took so long to establish there had been foul play. As we went to press the Essex police force confirmed it had referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) over delays in identifying the death of a notorious criminal as a possible murder.

A former Scotland Yard cop explained to a national paper how the paramedics might have missed the gunshot wounds. Colin Sutton said: “It may seem extraordinary, but when a

person dies after being under the care of a doctor within the last two weeks, that doctor can issue a death certificate without a full examination of the body.

“If a doctor certified death due to heart failure in the wake of Palmer’s surgery, it is quite likely he/she may have dismissed the death as natural causes and only a basic post-mortem was carried out.

“There was no real neglect by police - or anybody. It was reasonable to assume death was due to heart failure days after surgery.”

Felipe just star-struck KING Felipe has been in Tenerife to officially open eight new telescopes in the Canary Islands’ Astrophysics Institute (IAC) in Izaña.

Two are for the Quijote experiment, in which the microwave radiation left by the Big Bang (the great initial explosion of the Universe) will be investigated.

The other six are robotic, which, among other things, will allow scientists to locate nearby asteroids with orbits and eclipses observed between plan-

ets and satellites of the galaxy.

The Spanish ruler described the event as “a very important milestone in the history of our science and our astronomy”.

Felipe, who arrived by helicopter to Izaña, was accompanied by Paulino Rivero, outgoing President of the Canary Islands Government; Ana Pastor, Minister of Development and Rafael Rebolo, director of IAC. Tenerife Cabildo president Carlos Alonso was also among the dignitaries.

Rebolo stressed that the work of all his team was to investigate “the limits of the universe”.

Carnival theme up to the public THE Santa Cruz Autonomous Body of Festivals and Recreation (OAFAR) will this weekend submit a provisional list of themes for next year’s Carnival, which will then be offered to the public for an online vote.

“The 80s”, “The Caribbean” and “Disco” are among the proposals announced by Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, at the end of the meeting with Parties’ Councillor Gladis de León.

Bermudez said: “With this decision, we reiterate our intention that it will be the chicharrero people (inhabitants of the borough) who determine the theme for the devel-

opment of the next Carnival.

“Our Carnival is the only one in the Canaries enjoying the rating of International Tourist Interest.”

The vote will take place between Monday and Thursday, through the official Carnival web platform (www. carnavaltenerife.com), in which the public, individually, may choose the theme they like and participate in the vote.

Once the deadline closes, the OAFAR will announce the result and begin work on adapting the programme.

The Santa Cruz Carnival - rated second only to Rio in the world - has developed under many slogans over the years, such as “Rome”, “The Jungle”, “Fairy Tales”, “Magic”, “Terror” and even “Tenerife, history of Carnival” among many others.

Meanwhile as in previous years, the 2016 Carnival will feature three artistic directors, each in front of the shows that will choose the adult, child and senior queens.

Enrique Camacho will direct the adult Queen Gala, while assisting the other two professionals responsible for the children’s show and the elderly. They will be named in the next few weeks.

Jobless tally still falling Mexico salutes Spanish ruler...

MEXICO President Enrique Peña Nieto and his wife, Angélica Rivera, offered a warm welcome to Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia during a ceremony at Campo Marte.

“The ties between Spain and Mexico are centenarian, fraternal and indissoluble,” said the President.

He thanked the monarchs for choosing Mexico as the first Latin American country to visit after their

proclamation.

King Felipe responded by telling him: “The relations between Mexico and Spain are built between people, and they transcend governments and institutions.

“Spain’s relations with Mexico are of paramount importance, not only because we are strategic partners, but because we share a common cultural history.”

The Queen and King, who ended his speech with an emotional “Viva Mexico”, were decorated with the Order of the Aztec Eagle, which is the highest decoration awarded to foreigners in Mexico.

THE number of people unemployed and registered at the offices of the Public Employment Services (formerly INEM) in the Canary Islands dropped by 8.09% in June against the same month last year.

It represented a drop of 21,836 people, leaving 248,223 still jobless throughout the islands.

In relation to the monthly data, unemployment also fell in the Canaries - 1.48% from May - which meant a decline of 3,718 people.

By provinces, in monthly terms, the number of jobless fell again in Las Palmas by 2,314 (-1.71%), while in Santa Cruz de Tenerife there was a fall of 1,404 unemployed (-1.20%).

Of the unemployed, a total of 131,771 are women and 116,452 men. Also, in the under25s group, there is a job-

less total of 11,702. In terms of activity, the sector with the biggest number of unemployed in the Canaries remains the Services, with 185,732 out of work, followed by construction (32,401 unemployed) people previously unemployed (13,525), Industry (10,934) and Agriculture (5,631).

In the country as a whole, the number of registered jobless at the Public Employment Services (formerly INEM) fell by 94,727 in June (-2.2%), to 4,120,304 people, the lowest level since August 2011.

With the drop in June, unemployment figures have been down for five straight months. And with the arrival of summer and seasonal contracts, that is traditionally a good month for employment.

In all the months of June since the beginning of records in 1996, it has shown a decrease in the unemployment register, except in 2008, when it

rose by almost 37,000.

But in the past seven years, the jobless reg-

ister has decreased in June by an average of 74,000 people.

Arsonists’ attack on pine forest TENERIFE Cabildo has confirmed that the forest fire in the Orticosa area, in the heights of the Candelaria and Arafo, affecting over six hectares of pine trees, was started deliberately.

The Cabildo’s Forestry Division said that 35 people were involved in extinguishing the fire, including 20 professionals from the Fire Consortium, Guardia Civil, Local Police and Civil Protection.

Five helicopters were used, along with the land-cargo plane, which was scrambled from La Gomera.

Experts from the Guardia Civil, the Cabildo and fire-fighters who, investigated the cause of the blaze, suggest it was arson.

The smoke alerted locals in various villages and areas around the TF-1 at around 5am on Wednesday.

The helicopters took turns from early on to fight the flames.

By 11.30am the fire was stabilised, then controlled and extinguished by nightfall.

The Cabildo expressed its gratitude to those who fought the fire, while the police are hunting the arsonists.

More four-hour strikes by airport staff on way Canarians silenced over oil exploration SPAIN’S Constitutional Court has declared ‘invalid’ the decree presented by Canary Islands citizens to say whether or not they wanted oil exploration in the archipelago.

The Court judgement stated that although the Canaries Government did not convene an inquiry, there was a referendum request.

However, the Statute of Autonomy was correctly applied by the state.

Before promoting this legal process, the Canary Government and its president, Paulino Rivero, asked permission from the Sapnish

Cabinet to openly call a referendum.

Receiving no response, he raised a legal question which was overcome by its lack of jurisdiction over oil exploration in the sea, asking for its impact on two issues of regional jurisdiction: the environment and tourism.

“Do you think Canaries must change their environmental and tourism model for prospecting of gas or oil?” Was the question the Canary Islands Government wanted to ask of the Islands’ residents, on a date set for 23rd November last year.

This was legally postponed, the courts have decreed, by the national government.

The Constitutional

Court this week legally annulled Articles 9-26 of the regulations, approved last year by the Canary Islands Government, to regulate how they would have to carry out such consultations in the autonomous community, starting with oil.

The Constitution’s decision, in essence, says that the local government cannot call a referendum on a national issue, even if the issue is in the local government’s region.

Only the state can authorise such an action, it ruled.

The decision will have a bearing on future actions and greatly reduces the power of the Canary Islands Government.

As it turned out, Repsol mothballed the project after finding little oil - and not enough to make the project commercially viable.

However, recent reports suggest that other oil companies may take over the drilling licence.

Mum tried to murder her kids with a knife TWO young children, whose mother attempted to kill them with a knife in their Lanzarote home, before inflicting stab wounds on herself, were rescued by the Guardia Civil.

The kids, aged five and three, also hospitalised, are understood to be out of danger, while the mother, who is in a coma, will be formally arrested and read her

legal rights when she recovers consciousness.

The three officers involved say they have collected enough evidence and testimonies to proceed with her arrest for two attempted murders as soon as her health allows it.

The horrific incident happened over the weekend in a house on Calle La Garita, Arrieta, a village in the north of the island.

The police gained access to the ground-floor house with the help of a relative of the children.

The officers guards initially came across the woman with multiple

wounds, one in the abdomen, and there was significant blood loss.

A large knife was beside her on the floor.

They then found the five-year-old boy and a girl of three, who had numerous cuts and wounds.

One officer stopped the blood from the woman’s main wound with a towel, while his two companions assisted the minors.

Both the mother and the children were later taken to the General Hospital in Arrecife as a matter of urgency - the kids accompanied by their father.

SPANISH air traffic controllers are introducing another batch of four-hour strikes next month.

They are continuing their protest about the Enaire airport authority’s decision to sanction 61 controllers over a wildcat strike, which led to the complete closure of Spanish airspace in December 2010.

They will come to a halt again on 11th, 12th, 25th and 26th July, having held similar strikes in June. Thankfully, they caused limited disruption at airports, thanks to strict, minimum-service demands imposed by the Public Works Ministry.

This time, air controllers will strike from 10am to 1pm on 11th and 25th July, and from 5pm to 8pm on 12th and 26th July.

The union said in a statement: “USCA considers unreasonable, Enaire’s decision to maintain the sanctions on 61 controllers in Barcelona after an investigating court looking into the possible violations by the people sanctioned, and 20 other courts throughout the country, concluded that no disobedience or job walk-outs took place.”

Besides the sanctions, one controller was also fired, but he is appeal-

ing that decision. The USCA has also asked the Public Works Ministry to be less strict in its demands for minimum services on the days of the strike. That’s to avoid violating controllers’ right-to-strike guarantees under the law.

During the June stoppage, the Ministry was able to maintain 70% service at all airports and avoided any major incidents which would have resulted in passengers missing flights.

Diphtheria boy is dead THE six-year-old Catalonia boy, victim of the rare disease diphtheria, died last Friday night in Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron hospital.

The tragic youngster, whose “terribly guilty” parents say they were tricked by anti-vaccine groups into not having him vaccinated, was admitted to hospital 28 days earlier after it was confirmed that he was suffering from the first case of diphtheria recorded in Spain since 1987.

An anti-toxin treatment was rushed to Bar-

celona from Russia but, sadly, it proved ineffective. Catelonian health authorities detected diphtheria bacteria in eight more children in the Garrotxa district, where the youngster was initially taken ill.

Boi Ruiz, regional health councillor, said during a press conference that the eight new cases, “have not developed the illness thanks to their vaccinations, but they have been kept at home to avoid them spreading the disease to the 3% of children in the district of Garrotxa who are not vaccinated”.

He added: “We swabbed 57 children near to the infected child and the bacteria was present in eight.”

North’s new water power A MUCH-NEEDED water system is being introduced to the north of Tenerife in a move which will help the El Rosario area.

Mayor Escolástico Gil has this week signed off the contract, which will alleviate, in part, serious problems with the water supply every summer, which affects the municipality’s coast.

Specifically, 25,000 euros will be spent on improving the supply connection to the streets of Valdes, Bazan, Antequera and Raadazul’s Oquendo, where there have always been water problems.

That’s because the sheer height of the area makes it difficult for wa-

ter to be pumped into homes. Work begins in the next two weeks to extend the pipe, placing one of a larger diameter to increase the flow and pressure.

However, this will be a minor task compared with another major project, which has already been agreed.

This involves the construction of a new reservoir in Tabaiba Alta, with a holding capacity of 4,000 cubic metres.

Work on this project should start before the end of the year.

The Cabildo is preparing specifications to invite tenders for the job, in which over one million euros will be invested.

TF-5 upgrade now in place THE Cabildo has awarded a contract of some 888,000 euros to Acciona Infraestructuras for a TF-5 motorway upgrade to tackle traffic congestion on the north-bound motorway to Santa Cruz.

The roadworks, divided into three sections, will take around two months, and the first aim is to create a new access to the Vía de

Ronda and the connection with Santa Maria del Ma’ (TF-2) to prevent traffic joining the TF-3.

Then there’s the redesignation of the Lora y Tamayo Avenue junctions, eliminating direct access to the TF-5 southbound.

And the motorway from Lora y Tamayo will be increased from one to two service lanes.

Feel-good factor proves so costly!

ALL Spaniards have a right to free public health, which is established by the state regulatory body. But most people who use the health services are unaware of the real cost of treatment.

It surprises them that spending a day in a normal hospital bed costs 656.42 euros - and that this cost rises to 2,466 euros when the stay is in the Intensive Surveillance Unit (UVI), or the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

An operation on eye cataracts - one of the most common in the Canarian public health surgeries - costs the public 1,512 euros, rising to 2,390 euros if the bilateral glaucoma is also operated on.

The same applies to varicose veins: an intervention without a high risk to the patient. But it requires the mobilisation of resources amounting to 1,089 euros;

or a bunion operation, which costs 956.03 euros. And the removal of haemorrhoids costs 981 euros.

Obviously, the greater s e v e r i t y, the costlier it becomes, and at the head of all operations are transplants.

In the case of a kidney, for which the University Hospital of the Canary Islands is considered one of the best centres in Spain, it is a minimum invest-

ment of 31,011 euros.

The liver, at 34,411 euros, is even more expensive and for this organ, the Candelaria hospital is one of the country’s leaders.

A chemotherapy session costs 521 euros per day per person. A breast scan is 20.50 euros, while a mammogram varies from 128-380 euros, depending on the case.

The minimum cost is 95.21 euros if an X-ray is involved. But it can exceed 700 euros if surgeons take advantage of the X-ray to perform an aspiration biopsy.

The scanner costs more, since the simplest scan is 88 euros, and can reach up to 365.32 euros.

Final protest before A ‘Gag Law’ comes in A LARGE Greenpeace banner, defending people’s protest rights, overshadowed Spain’s Parliament on Tuesday.

It was part of a series of protest actions against the Public Security Law - known as the “gag law” which came into effect on Wednesday.

Greenpeace activists draped the banner, which read “Protesting is a Right”, on a tall

construction crane just behind the lower house in downtown Madrid, making it clearly visible above the building.

It was one of many planned protests throughout the day across Spain before the law was effected.

The bill has received widespread criticism, and the main opposition Socialist party intends scrapping it if elected in general elections later this year.

Five United Nations human rights experts have called for the bill to be repealed, while Human Rights Watch has also panned it.

The new law allows for the summary expul-

sion of migrants caught illegally entering the country’s North African enclaves. It also sets hefty fines for protests outside Parliament, or strategic installations.

Spanish cities have staged weekly, mainly peaceful, protests following the onset of the economic crisis in 2008.

But the Government was left furious in 2012 when tens of thousands of protesters surrounded Parliament to complain against tax-hikes and cutbacks.

The bill sets fines of up to 30,000 euros for protests near Parliament and regional lawmaking buildings, when there is a “serious dis-

turbance of public safety”.

A fine of up to 600,000 euros is included for unauthorised protests near key infrastructure, including transportation hubs or nuclear power plants.

Media advocates are also concerned that the law could stifle journalists because it allows for fines of up to 30,000 euros for “unauthorised use of images” of police, including live and recorded video.

The conservative Popular Party government says pictures of police cracking down on protests could prevent them from doing their jobs, or put them at risk.

Obviously, we have a host of questions on a variety of topics to put to the Mayors, but we also want to give you a chance to quiz the men in charge.

Dear Editor, The recently-refurbished Paradise Park Hotel reopened last week and, since then, those of us in direct proximity to the hotel have been bombarded by noise from the relocated airconditioning system.

Situated previously within the hotel, it caused no nuisance. But now the unit is on the roof, the noise of the motors and the expelled air is extremely intrusive.

The noise, akin to an idling 757 awaiting takeoff, can be heard in every room in the apartment - and the only way to escape at night is to close terrace doors which, fortunately, are doubleglazed.

The noise is 24/7 and I cannot believe it would get the approval of the local council.

I am not alone in experiencing this invasion of sound, but I may well be the only one prepared to voice my concern.

I shall be pursuing this through our administrators and our legal representative.

Dear Editor, We are victims of noise pollution in Las Americas, and we live some 400 metres from the Veronicas Strip. Since April, we have had to contend with all the night noise there until 6am.

I am 80, my wife is 70, and we do not go to bed before 2am anyway. After that, the noise really starts, with the bass beat keeping us awake until early morning.

We have the Tenerife Sol hotel between us and Veronicas, but the the thump of the bass goes right through everything - even with ceiling fans on and windows closed.

The hotel manager says they have many protests from guests and have complained to the police and the Council “thousands of times”, but to no avail.

As if this were not enough, the car park in front of the house on weekends becomes a giant “Bottle Party.” And it’s no good me phoning the police because they don’t even bother to come along.

On Monday, the noise went on until 7am. I called 112 at 6am and waited for an hour. But nobody turned up!

Having lived in Los Cristianos before, I know that at midnight, all music must be inside and the doors closed.

How can Veronicas get away with it? What can be done about it? We believe that one denouncement at Los Cristianos Police Station from just two people probably would not help!

Sleepless in Las Americas

MOBILE phone roaming charges will be wiped out within the European Union by June 2017.

The ban will be preceded by a 14-month interim period, in which companies can still add surcharges - but at a reduced rate.

A deal, reached on Tuesday, also sets out rules requiring telecom operators to treat most internet traffic equally.

But the net neutrality rules will allow blocking for some reasons, such as to counter cyber-attacks.

From April 2016, telecoms operators will be able to add a surcharge of no more than: *0.05 euros (3.5p) extra per minute for calls *0.02 euros extra per SMS sent *0.05 euros extra per megabyte of data used The cap would make roaming within the EU 75% cheaper during the interim period, said the European Commission.

The agreement is the culmination of years of campaigning to cut roaming charges, and to define the EU nations’ approach to regulating internet traffic - particularly in light of the US adoption of netneutrality rules.

It largely follows proposals put forward in March this year, which analysts said were a weaker version of what European regulators had originally promised.

But it will enshrine the principle of net neutrality, which stops internet service providers (ISPs) favouring some internet traffic, in European law for the first time.

However, as mooted in March, there will be exceptions to those rules.

ISPs

will be able to favour services that require high-quality internet connections, such as internet TVs, as long as they do not impinge on the overall quality of internet traffic.

The commission said it would also be able to throttle traffic if it were in the public interest.

For example, to combat the proliferation of images of child sexual abuse or a terrorist attack.

The agreement will be presented to EU member states between July and December this year for formal adoption.

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) - the fourth-largest grouping of MEPs in the European Parliament - has previously criticised regulators for trying to water down plans to end data roaming.

But it welcomed Tuesday’s announcement. Guy Verhofstadt, President of the ALDE group, said the “great roaming rip-off” was to be brought to an end.

The group blamed the delay in successfully negotiating the deal on member states, which have been accused of seeking to protect their national operators in the past.

But Marietje Schaake MEP, another member of the group, renewed the attack on the netneutrality deal, saying: “The compromise reached now is a watered-down version of the strong ambitions of the European Parliament.”

Gunther Oettinger, commissioner for the digital economy and society, defended the net-neutrality proposals as a “pragmatic” approach.

She added: “This will help the local economy and build on the domestic growth we have experienced in the last few years.”

Guerra also reminded consumers: “It is important to know what your consumer rights are, especially at this time, to avoid problems once you have purchased a product or service.”

For its part, human resources company Adecco estimate that the sales will create 4,658 new contracts in the Canary Islands.

The province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will be responsible for more than 50%, with 2,500 contracts, while the province of Las Palmas will take on just over 2,130 workers.

Zoo worker mauled by runaway chimp A WORKER at Fuerteventura’s Oasis Park zoo and theme park is recovering from an attack by a chimpanzee. Two colleagues suffered minor injuries.

The chimp is believed to have escaped from a cage, along with two others, and attacked the worker, who is “out of danger” after various operations over the weekend in Gran Canaria’s Insular Hospital.

A statement from the zoo, based in La Lajita, in the south of the island, read: “The unfortunate incident saw three people injured, one seriously, and two of the three escaped chimpanzees were shot.”

The primates escaped last Friday morning

from their cage, forcing an evacuation of visitors, who were taken to a closed area of the zoo - one of the largest in Europe.

According to the statement, the team of zoo-keepers and veterinarians, armed with tranquiliser darts, tried to sedate the runaway trio - part of the same

family at the zoo for 30 years.

But after exceeding the time granted by security forces, and considering there were human lives at risk, officials activated an action that resulted in the death of King and Felipa, from the chimpanzees’ family.

Cheeta, who survived and had emergency surgery, made a swift recovery and was even eating by herself after a couple of days.

The zoo has called for “respect” for the injured worker and his family, and says the other two injured staff members had already been discharged from the hospital over the weekend.

Chimpanzees Cheeta and King were taken in by the park’s family owners after being confiscated from a street photographer in 1988.

Felipa, the third member of the chimpanzee community, reached the zoo in the Nineties after being a victim of the illegal trafficking of animals when she was 22.

Oasis Park stressed that because many of the species are taken from the wild, “they cannot be put back into the wild as they have lived in captivity and adopted behaviours that make them unrecoverable to nature”.

Spain’s terror alert raised to high-risk JORGE Fernandez Diaz, Spain’s Interior Minister, has raised the terror alert level from 3 to 4 (the maximum is 5).

It follows the recent attacks in France, Kuwait, Somalia and the current Tunisian atrocity.

This level means that Spain is at “high risk” of suffering a terrorist attack, and Fernandez Diaz said there were two main reasons for the change.

On one hand, the geographical proximity of the places where the jihadist attacks have happened on Fridays: mainly France and Tunisia, But so far, there is no evidence of any Spanish victims.

The third reason is the confidential information held by the security forces, and the intelligence service, about which the Minister has refused to provide details.

Raising the alert level is the result of a meeting convened to assess the emergency situation and, said the Minister: “It has been approved to extend the alert level unanimously.”

Fernandez Diaz said it was “temporary” and that the aim was to reinforce the “protection, prevention and research”.

Special attention will be paid to the socalled critical infrastructure - those who provide essential community services (stations, airports, power plants, nuclear power plants, etc).

Yob on Ryanair flight pinned down by cops AN aggressive man, who harrassed women and caused a rumpus on a Ryanair flight from Bournemouth to Tenerife, was pinned to the tarmac by Spanish police on arrival.

It happened on Tuesday on the 7am flight to the South airport and a fellow-passenger, who photographed the incident, described how the man would not calm down after being led from the plane by police, who forced him to the ground to restrain him.

Keiran Campbell told The Bournemouth Echo: “He carried on kicking off at airport security, and he passed out in the toilet after

trying to fight another passenger, who I believe was sticking up for the girls.”

A Ryanair spokesperson said: “The crew of this flight requested police assistance after a passenger became disruptive in flight.

“The aircraft landed normally and police removed and detained this individual.

“We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour at any time, and we sincerely apologised to other customers for any inconvenience caused.

“The safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our No.1 priority. This is now a matter for local police.”

Ryanair also confirmed that the man has been banned for life from flying with the low-cost airline.

US has more Spanish speakers than Spain!

AMERICA has become the world’s second-largest S p a n i s h - s p e a king country after Mexico, with 41 million native Spanish speakers, plus a further 11.6 million who are bilingual.

A new study, published by the prestigious Instituto Cervantes, states that the bilingual speakers are mainly the children of Spanishspeaking immigrants.

The figures put the US behind No.1 Mexico (121 million) but ahead of Colombia (48 million) and even Spain (46 million).

Among the sources cited is the US Cen-

sus Office, which estimates that the US will have 138 million Spanish speakers by 2050.

That will make it the biggest Spanish-speaking nation on Earth, with Spanish the mother tongue of almost one-third of its citizens.

By American state, the highest concentration is in the former Spanish colonies of the south and south-west, with New Mexico top at 47%, followed by California and Texas (both 38%) and Arizona (30%).

Around 18% of New Yorkers speak Spanish, while only 1.3% of West Virginians do. Surprisingly, perhaps, more than 6% of Alaskans speak Spanish.

The report, “El español, una lengua viva” (Spanish, a living lan-

guage) estimates that there are 559 million people speaking Spanish worldwide, which includes 470 million native speakers and those with some command of the language.

The Instituto Cervantes was established in 1991 to promote the Spanish language abroad, and more than 200,000 students registered on its courses last year.

It estimates that 21 million people are currently studying Spanish, and the US also leads with 7.8 million learning the language, followed by Brazil and France.

The report adds that two-thirds of Spanishlinked GDP is generated in two areas: North America (US, Canada and Mexico) and the

European Union. Between them they account for 78%, while Latin America accounts for just 22%. It calculates that altogether, Spanish speakers contribute 9.2% of the world’s GDP. The Index of Human Development ranks Spanish as the secondmost important language on earth, behind English but ahead of Mandarin. It is also the third-most widely-used language on the internet, although less than 8% of internet traffic is in Spanish.

The report says that Spanish is the second most-used language on Twitter in London and New York. It also comes second on Facebook - a long way behind English though well ahead of Portuguese, Facebook’s third language.

Health care just not rated by Canarians RESIDENTS of the Canary Islands are unhappy with the standard of health care they receive, compared with the taxes they pay!

But the people of Aragon and Navarra are sdelighted with how Spain’s public health system functions.

That’s the findings from the latest Health

Barometer by the Council for Sociological Research (CIS), requested by the Ministry of Health.

They highlight that Canary Island inhabitants, along with residents of Ceuta and Melilla, believe they receive the worst value for their taxes.

The report, featuring the views of nearly 80,000 adults living in Spain in March, May and October last year, shows how public health achieved an av-

erage score of 6.31 out of 10 in 2014, just onetenth less than the 6.41 achieved in 2013. But the analysis shows significant differences in communities.

The leading two regions scored over seven points out of 10, followed by the Basque Country (6.90), La Rioja (6.80), Cantabria (6.72), Asturias and Castilla and León (both 6.57), Madrid (6.55 ) and Murcia (6.41).

dalucía (6.29), Baleares (6.24), Galicia (6.22), Valencia (6.11), Castilla-La Mancha (6.07) and Cataluña (6, 03).

The stats can be misleading because those at the bottom actually improved their rating from last year, but were still the least satisfied.

They were Extremadura (5.99), Ceuta (5.66), Melilla (5.62) and the Canary Islands (5.55), which, like last year, was the region with the worst public health values.

Used tyres to be outlawed?

PRESSURE is being put on the Spanish Government to ban the sale of used tyres, amid increasing safety fears from industry professionals.

It is estimated that 300,000 vehicles on Spanish roads are fitted with used tyres - a figure which has increased in recent years because of the financial crisis.

One mainstream supplier states that 80% of its business is in the sale of used, rather than new tyres. In addition, it is believed that 60% of all cars over 10 years of age are fitted with used tyres.

Meanwhile, accident investigators who say that tyres are a factor in three out of four road traffic incidents, point out that tyre wear-andtear is different on all vehicles, makes and models.

That is why 35% of motor industry profession-

als are now lobbying for the sale of used tyres to be prohibited. And that figure is backed up by 45% of journalists working in the sector.

As the most vulnerable part of a vehicle, facing constant abuse and wear, close monitoring and awareness of tyres is crucial to the safe running of a vehicle.

Meanwhile, summer is well and truly here, and it pays to be smart with how you run your vehicle.

Using your car´s airconditioning at a temperature below 20 degrees can result in a 20% increase of fuel consumption, according to a new report, compiled

by AutoScout24.

The report is aimed at raising awareness of using air-conditioning, and the impact on vehicle use, including an increase in maintenance.

It also encourages users to reduce the settings of their units, to improve performance of both the vehicle´s fuel consumption and to

avoid damage. That can be achieved by keeping the settings in the mid or low range, or simply opening the windows to reduce the temperature.

AutoScout24 also highlights the importance of conducting proper maintenance of the air-conditioning in winter and perform a thorough cleaning of the radiator, as well as checking the system’s hoses and ducts.

The company says the gas is an essential element of air-conditioning, and a clear sign of a malfunction is that the device fails to cool when connected.

Santa Cruz wages war on spoilers

SANTA Cruz Council, which is “declaring war” on those who soil and spoil the Tenerife capital, has finalised the Cleaning Act amendment.

It includes fines of between 500 to 2,000 euros for miscreants who litter the pavements and roads, or cover public

buildings with grafitti.

And the law is expected to be in force before the end of the year.

Dámaso Arteaga, Public Services Councillor, said: “The goal is not to raise more money, but to set some sanctions to serve as a deterrent against people who are dedicated

to soil our property with graffiti, or even burn it.”

Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez said the capital was “declaring war” on people who deliberately spoil the capital. He added: “The best way to keep the city clean is not to soil it.”

Singer Jadel will spread the word Money is no object!

TOURISTS in Spain spent a record 21bn euros up to the end of May this year, which was a mighty 8.4% increase over the same 2014 period.

There were 22.5 million arrivals in that time, the average spending by individuals totalling 968 euros, with a daily outlay of 116 euros.

In relative terms, the Asian countries and the US had higher annual increases - close to a staggering 26% - while the UK and France spent the most combined.

In May alone, the total expenditure of international tourists soared 11.8% to 5.8bn euros, the result of the 6.8% increase in arrivals, with 905 euros spent per head each week - 4.7% more than in 2014.

JADEL, the Tenerife-born music star, hopes to promote the Island through his work, after hit the heights in Spain since his debut in the lead role of Jesus Christ Superstar last year.

Now, just a few months later, he is starring as another famous person, Che Guevara, in a production of Evita, which comes to Tenerife this week.

The internationallyrenowned musical, based on the life of Eva Peron, was first performed in Spain in Madrid, in 1981 and it returns with the first run in Tenerife.

The first new production is on at the Auditorium in Santa Cruz from tomorrow (Saturday) until Tuesday.

The show moves to La Palma on 14th July and Fuerteventura on

the 17th and 18th, before going on tour to the mainland and Latin America.

Jadel is aware that this constitutes a major challenge. “The production has been a big effort, and lots of money has been spent,” he said this week. “And I want

to take the name of the Canary Islands as far as possible.

“It’s a real privilege to be able to launch a product like this from here. We talk about a world premier, and I have heard that Andrew Lloyd Webber, director of the original produc-

tion, will be present this weekend at the Auditorium.”

The Tenerife singersongwriter hit the headlines when he won a national talent show in 2012 on the TV channel Antena 3.

“At first I had no interest in this world,” he ad-

mitted. “I was a singer with a guitar, and not someone who did mainstream theatre shows.”

Now, however, he is “very comfortable and happy”, adding: “I have found a wonderful world.”

In many ways, Evita is a more complex show when compared with Jesus Christ Superstar, and Jadel admits it has been more of a challenge.

“That’s true, especially with the vocals in Evita,” said. “It is more linked to the interpretative aspect and memory, because the songs have many more words.

“In this show, I am almost always on stage and there are very fast songs, with very different times - not as squared as commercial tracks. It is more difficult to fit everything in.

“The role of Che has been played before by artists like Ricky Martin, Marti Pellow and Antonio Banderas. Big boots to fill!”

Constipation kills teenager who refused to use the loo A TEENAGER with a phobia about using toilets, died from a heart attack caused by constipation - after going eight weeks without a bowel movement.

Emily Titterington, 16, frequently withheld her stools for up to two months. In the end, though, her bowel grew so large that it compressed her chest cavity, displacing other organs.

Yet her life could have been saved with appropriate treatment, an

inquest heard, but she refused to be examined medically.

Dr Amanda Jeffery, a Home Office pathologist, said her symptoms matched a condition more frequent in children, known as “stool withholding”.

And a post-mortem examination revealed that Emily had a “massive

extension of the large bowel”.

Dr Jeffery, asked by Coroner Dr Emma Carlyon to describe the severity of the condition, replied: “It was like nothing I’ve ever seen before - it was dramatic.”

The inquest in Truro, Cornwall, heard how Emily, who had mild autism, suffered with bowel

problems for most of her life. But doctors were unable to discover the cause.

Her GP, Dr Alistair James, said that in the run-up up to her death, Emily’s mother, Geraldine, had begged her to be examined, but to no avail.

Dr James told the coroner he had prescribed laxatives but did not examined Emily’s abdomen. “Had I done so, we would be having a different conversation,” he said. “Her death could have been avoided with the right treatment at the right point.”

Shoppers to fork out 5% more in the sales CANARIANS will spend an average of 70 euros in the summer sales, which is 5% more than last year.

Abbas Moujir, General Secretary of the Federation of Urban Areas in Canary Islands (FAUCA), stressed that the positive trend extends

from 2014, when sales rose to 7% in September.

This continued in the first quarter of 2015 with increases of 4.5%, and in May, the increase was still a healthy 1.7%.

The summer sales season started on Wednesday, so traders cannot yet make an initial assessment, while Moujir said there was “a very good atmosphere in

the streets”. He added: “It is better than in previous weeks although consumption will increase in the coming days, especially from Friday.”

In any case, the sector’s prospects for this year are “good” for a number of positive variables. This includes the consumer confidence index, which has im-

proved, with the growth of the economy, and the planned creation of 30,000 jobs this year in the Canary Islands.

Traders estimate incomes this summer of more than 20% of their total yearly sales. And 75% of the products expected to be sold are personal equipment, footwear, accessories and perfume.

Text supremo dies at 63 MATTI Makkonen, the extraordinary mobile communications engi-

neer, who helped to launch the worldwide sensation of texting, has died at the age of 63 after an illness.

The man from Finland became known as the father of SMS after developing the idea of sending messages via mobile networks.

Despite that label, though, he was quick to point out that he didn’t actually invent the technology singlehandedly. And, curiously, he never resorted to “txt spk”.

In 2012, he told BBC News - in an SMS interview - that he believed texting in some form would be around “forever”.

And on the 20th anniversary of the first text message, Makkonen said he considered the development of SMS a joint effort, and that it was Nokia who helped popularise the service.

“The real launch of the service, as I see it, was when Nokia introduced the first phone that enabled easy writing of messages (Nokia 2010 in 1994),” he insisted.

And though he did not use “txt spk” himself, he said texting could be thought of as having had an impact on the development of language.

Jarmo Matilainen, managing

director of Finnish telecoms group Finnet Association, had been working with Makkonen, himself a former managing director of Finnet Ltd, in recent years.

He described Makkonen as a “grand old man of the mobile industry”, adding: “It’s very sad. He was just going to retire, and he should have had many years ahead. His fascination with communications technology was irrepressible.”

Mr Matilainen recalled: “We liked to talk about SMS and that kind of thing, 3G and so on. He liked to talk about this all time.”

Although the use of SMS in the UK has started to fall, it remains popular worldwide, with trillions of texts sent every day.

8th February, 2013. Paramedics tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead in hospital.

Paramedic Lee Taylor attended the family’s home twice in the early hours. Of his first visit, he said the teenager was “looking pale” and complaining of pain between her shoulder blades.

But she refused to go to hospital, and would not be examined. He said she wore a “loose nightie” and he did not notice any abdominal swelling.

Mr Taylor and his colleague, student paramedic Lisa Marie Edwards, were called back just after 4am. “We were allocated to an emergency at the house we’d just left, he recalled.

“When we arrived her father, James, was outside shouting at us to help, saying something had gone badly wrong.”

They found Emily’s mother leaning over her daughter, who was lying in the bathroom doorway.

Mr Taylor said: “As

she moved away I could see that her abdomen was grossly extended.

Her lower ribs had been pushed out further than her pubic bone - I was shocked.”

Emily’s sister, 29-yearold Hannah Herbert last saw her four weeks prior to her death. Her mother said Emily had not been to the toilet for “six to eight weeks” and this was “routine”, the inquest heard.

Hannah said she did not feel that Emily was in a “healthy, safe environment” and that she had previously contacted social services with her concerns. But GP Dr James said he found “no evidence” of safeguarding issues.

In a statement read out in court, Emily’s brotherin-law, Brian Herbert, said the family had tried a number of different remedies for her bowel condition.

They included homeopathic pills, and a technique known as Body Talk, which involved “distance healing”.

Universities’ influx down THE Canary Islands closed the 2014-2015 school year with 39,664 students enrolled in its universities.

The figure was 1,300 (3.17%) lower than in the previous year, says the Ministry of Education.

All regions lost pupils in their universities, both from public and private schools, with a total of 55,487 registrations fewer.

The largest drops were in La Rioja and Castilla y Leon, while the decline was smaller in Murcia and Navarra.

The data of “Advancing university students statistics. Course 20142015” indicates a 3.91% decline in the total number of registrations in degrees, first and second cycle of career, because during 2013-14 there were 1,416,827, while the recently-completed figure was 1,361,340.

La Rioja, with a de-

crease of 10.53% in the number of enrolments in careers over the previous year, tops the regional list in terms of the drop in university students, followed by Castilla y Leon (8.19%) with Extremadura in 3rd place with 7.94%.

The regions where university enrolments saw a smaller decline this year were Murcia (1.75%), Navarra (3%) and Canaries (3.1%).

It is the third consecutive year in which career registrations are down, especially in public universities, and from 2011-12 to 201415, 86,230 students have disappeared.

This course was the first in which registrations fell in careers in private and Catholic universities, dropping from 177,685 to 164,776.

On the contrary, there has been an increase in enrolments for Masters, especially in private universities.

Huge Glastonbury crowd bow to Richie the legend VETERAN American singer Lionel Richie attracted Glastonbury Festival’s largest crowd this year, with as many as 100,000 people watching his performance.

The Pyramid Stage field was packed as the star sung his most famous hits, like Dancing on the Ceiling, Hello and Say You, Say Me. Richie’s performance in the festival’s traditional Sunday afternoon “legend” slot will be remembered as one of this year’s highlights.

And organisers even suggested the field could have been near its 120,000 capacity when he played.

His set included hits like All Night Long, We Are The World, Easy and Three Times A Lady.

Fans chanted the star’s name, and the sport-

ing security guards in front of the stage even performed a dance they had learned when he sung Dancing on the Ceiling.

After that, Richie looked disbelievingly at the size of the crowd and repeated: “What the hell is going on?”

The “legend” slot has become one of Glastonbury’s annual highlights,

and Richie followed in the distinguished footsteps of other “greats”, such as Dolly Parton, Tom Jones and Neil Diamond, who have also wooed Glastonbury.

Rock legends The Who, now down to two founding members, and Ringo Starr’s son Zak pounding away impressively on the drums, then closed the annual

Somerset extravaganza.

They stripped back the years with their golden oldies, including My Generation, Pinball Wizard and Won’t Get Fooled Again.

The Sixties group also took a dig at Kanye West’s claim, made during his Saturday headline slot, to be the world’s greatest rock

star. The band’s Glastonbury appearance was part of a world tour to mark their 50th anniversary, which singer Roger Daltrey has described as “the beginning of the long goodbye”.

Paul Weller and Patti Smith also featured on the roll of honour, and the Dalai Lama even visited the site.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader was introduced on the main stage by Patti after delivering a speech earlier in the Peace Garden.

Elsewhere at the Festival, dance favourites The Chemical Brothers ended proceedings on a high on the Other Stage, while there were also appearances by US singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, art-pop film-maker FKA Twigs, and FFS, a group welded together by merging Franz Ferdinand and Sparks.

Police brothel probe is paying dividends

A LENGTHY National Police police probe into money-laundering in brothels is starting to yield real results in Madrid.

The number of detainees in the ongoing “Operation Pompeii” investigation has risen to 61 and, so far, a total of 1.5 million euros in cash has been seized. But this is the tip of the iceburg for the squad involved because their aim is to uncover a 150m-euro fraud.

National Court judge Fernando Andreu is coordinating the operation against brothels in various Spanish provinces for tax offences and money-laundering.

Initial inquiries suggest that these brothels had specific companies to avoid paying taxes for certain services, such as renting rooms or cocktail bars So far, brothels in Madrid, Alicante, San Sebastián and La Junquera, in Girona, have been hit.

And it is understood that the operation is now focusing on Cataluña, Valencia, the Basque Country, Navarra and Murcia.

Obama rubber-stamps same-sex marriage law NOW that samesex marriage has been recognised legally throughout the US after a bitter 10-year legal battle, President Barack Obama believes the ruling is a “victory for America”.

The 14 states with bans on same-sex marriage will no longer be able to enforce them, following last Friday’s Supreme Court ruling, and Obama added: “When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free. This ruling will strengthen all our communities.”

Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote: “The plaintiffs asked for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”

Same-sex couples in several affected states, including Georgia, Michigan, Ohio and Texas, rushed to wed when the news broke.

But officials in other states, including Mississippi and Louisiana, said marriages had to wait until procedural issues were addressed.

Unsurprisingly, Christian conservatives condemned the decision, former Arkansas governor and Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee calling it “an outof-control act of unconstitutional, judicial tyranny”.

And Kellie Fiedorek, a lawyer for an antigay marriage advocacy group, said the decision “ignored the voices of thousands of Ameri-

A tour bus drove past honking as hundreds cheered the decision.

One of the demonstrators, Jordan Monaghan, called his mother from his mobile phone amid the celebrations, tell-

ing her: “Hey mom, I’m at the Supreme Court.

Your son can have a husband now.”

Minutes after the ruling, couples in Georgia, one of the states which had a ban, lined up in the hope of being wed.

In Texas, Yasmin Menchaca and her partner, Catherine Andrews, told the BBC they were “trying to round up our parents” so they could get married that day.

On social media, Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton merely tweeted the word “proud”, and the White House changed its Twitter avatar into the rainbow colours.

The case considered by the court concerned Jim Obergefell, an Ohio resident who was not recognised as the legal widower of his late husband, John Arthur.

“It’s my hope that gay marriage will soon be a thing of the past, and from this day forward

it will simply be ‘marriage,’” said an emotional Mr Obergefell outside the court.

States affected by the ruling were Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, most of Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas.

The first state to allow same-sex marriage was Massachusetts, which gave it the nod in 2004.

But in recent years, a wave of legal rulings and a dramatic shift in public opinion have expanded US gay marriage states.

By coincidence, it is a decade since same-sex marriages were legalised in Spain. The then Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, led the campaign for official legislation, which was sanctioned on 3rd July 2005. Adoption by same-sex couples was also passed at the same time.

Spain was the third country to accept samesex marriage, after the Netherlands and Belgium, with Canada following 17 days later.

Madrid’s annual Gay Pride parade - as much a fun show these days - began on Wednesday and ends on Sunday (5th July).

It is acknowledged as one of Europe’s most flamboyant and biggest LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual) festivals, attracting around 1.5 million partygoers.

The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed that the Labour peer will face a trial of facts over the allegations, It overturns the severely-criticised decision by Alison Saunders Director of Public Prosecutions, not to prosecute the 86-year-old because his dementia rendered him unfit to face trial.

The review increases pressure on Ms Saunders to resign over her decision in April not to pursue charges against Lord Janner for 22 sexual-abuse claims, dating back to the Sixties and spanning 30 years.

The DPP was criticised for failing to consider a trial of facts, where a defendant is found unfit to stand trial. But the evidence in the case is heard and the court decides whether he carried out the acts of which he has been accused. Ms Saunders’ controversial decision led to a rift with police.

The victims applied for a review of the decision, which agreed that Lord Janner would be found unfit to plead and that a trial of facts would probably end in an absolute discharge: neither a punishment nor conviction.

But it concluded that it was still “in the public interest to bring proceedings before the court”.

The first hearing is scheduled for 7th August at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The family of Lord Janner have always insisted he is innocent of any allegations made against him.

Ms Saunders said: “I have always said that, in my view, this was an extremely difficult and borderline case because of the strong arguments on both sides.

“Also, I have always emphasised my concern for the complainants in this case. I understood their need to be heard,

which is why I contacted Justice Goddard to ensure that they could give evidence as part of the public inquiry.

“However, the review has concluded that this forum, albeit a public one, cannot substitute for the adjudication of the courts. I accept the outcome of the review and will now be bringing this prosecution to allow for that adjudication to happen.”

The CPS also confirmed that a draft review of decisions it reached regarding allegations against Lord Janner in 1991, 2002 and 2007, had concluded those decisions had been wrong and that the handling of the cases by both police and prosecutors was “unsatisfactory”.

Ms Saunders added: “It is a matter of real regret that prosecutions weren’t brought by the police and CPS in the past.

“We have brought forward this decision as public speculation on this review has brought damaging and unacceptable uncertainty for the complainants in this case.

“We have now done what we can to inform the complainants of the outcome of the review, and I have offered to meet each of them should they wish.”

Leicester Police were highly critical of Ms Saunders’ decision not to prosecute the peer, following the force’s more recent two-year investigation of allegations.

Specialist abuse lawyer Liz Dux, who represents many of Lord Janner’s alleged victims, said: “My clients are delighted by this decision.

“This is a vindication of our efforts to challenge the DPP’s original decision not to charge Janner, which was clearly not in the interest of justice.”

She added: “Our clients have waited long enough for their very serious allegations to be brought before a court.”

An independent inquiry into historic child sex abuse being led by Justice Lowell Goddard is also set to hear evidence from the complainants.

BACK to the Community of Owners issue - I have received many queries relating to this topic – and this week I am referring to the quota (percentage of your property in the building).

The quotas are often called “mensualidad”, which are monthly payments, although they can be bi-monthly, or quarterly, according to the Statutes of the Community or the Internal Rules.

These are the fees paid by each proprietor to comply with the Community’s yearly budget.

When buying a Spanish property, you must check on what the Community is. If the property you buy is included within a building (with

common areas, lifts, pools, gardens) you become owner simply of the apartment you bought, sharing a percentage (quota) of the whole building.

The Community comp r i s e s all the

owners who participate with a quota (the sum of all quotas would be 100% on the building).

You need to know how much you have to pay because it could be a substantial, annual sum. You also need to

know the Statutes of Community and also the Internal Rules which regulates rights and duties of all owners.

An important issue for a purchaser is to check

that the property you are buying is fully up to date with its Community fees. Your quota is calculated on the percentage of the total space your property occupies.

The Community’s Administrator carries out this calculation using

the official Horizontal Division Deed, which states the percentage of each apartment.

The Budget is the estimated costs for the coming year for the whole community. Monies collected are used to pay the Community costs (maintenance, electric and water bills, etc).

The quota is not only valid to determine the fee to be paid by each owner but also to determine the percentage of voting at the Annual General Meeting. Owners who have not paid their Community fees in full (debtors) cannot vote.

A greek tragedy?

FOR those of you awaiting news on what´s happening with the “Greek Crisis”, Eurozone finance ministers have again failed to break the longrunning deadlock between the country and its creditors.

If this were a game of poker, the Greek Government could be described as playing the biggest bluff of all time with all its chips, car keys, houses and everything else on the table.

The ECB (European Central Bank) has stepped in to say “No More Credit”, and the Government has con-

tacted its best allies (the people) to cover the raised stakes.

Unfortunately they aren’t going to make it in the time limit set by the other player The people can’t go to the bank and, therefore, have only what is literally under their mattresses. That’s because the Government has gambled all the cash, and decided to have a vote on wheth-

er it should back its other mates (the Government) or the other players!

It appears to have become a Mexican standoff, about what happens this week, and who blinks first.

For a very long time, we have been in uncomfortable, unchartered territory.

So what does this mean to you?

For those of you look-

ing to buy euros, this week has been offering a great opportunity, the euro reaching heights last posted 7½ years ago.

For ex-pats, especially in Spain, Italy and the rest of Europe, the present underlying fear of a run on your banks, while possible, seems unlikely - think of the Cypriot Crisis!

But if you ARE concerned, you might want

to think about the size of your cash balances, and where you currently hold them.

Back to the poker theme, but mixing card games … should you stick or twist? If you want to find out more about the potential effect of the Greek Crisis outcome on you, specifically, with regard to where any investments can best be protected,

Spanish moving away

THE number of Spaniards moving abroad last year was almost double the figures recorded in 2010, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).

A total of 78,785 Spaniards left the country in 2014, causing a population drop for the third year running.

The population of Spain on 1st January 2015 was 46,439,864, or 0.14% less than a year earlier. In 2013,

the drop was 0.46%.

Population shifts depend essentially on three factors: births, deaths and migratory movement. There are still more births than deaths in Spain, although the difference is just 29,974.

But more people are moving away than coming to Spain, and emigrants represent a higher number than the natural population increase.

The rate of departure

is decreasing, however, especially with regard to foreign citizens moving back to their home countries.

Most of these people were born in Spain, and their main destinations were Britain, France and Germany, reinforcing the theory of migration for economic reasons.

The figures reflect Spain’s struggle to recover from the effects of the economic crisis, which broke in 2008.

Wednesday 8th July, BBC2, 21.00 Children in Gaza and across the border in Israel have lived through three major conflicts in six years. Last summer, more than 500 children were killed in a 51-day war, all but one of them Palestinian. On the Israel side of the border, children lived in constant fear of rocket attacks and gunmen raiding from underground tunnels.

Lyse Doucet follows the lives of children on both sides of the conflict in the midst of the war and through the months that followed, revealing how children born so close are growing further apart with each war.

Michal, 10, lives in the kibbutz of Nahal Oz, less than a mile from the Gaza border, and has grown up with rocket attacks. The film follows the family as they take refuge away from the fighting. When they return, they discover their home has been hit. Days later their neighbour, four-year-old Daniel Tregerman, is killed by a rocket attack.

“It’s so not fair. Your home is supposed to be the safest place in the world for you. But it’s just not true.

We can’t just keep running away. It’s not because of us. It’s not because of Gaza kids.”

- Michal, 10 Abdurahman, 12, lost 18 members of his family, many of whom had links to Hamas. Abdurahman at first wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and grow up to become a Hamas fighter. The film discovers whether Abdurahman’s grief will drive him to follow that path.

Eilon, 12, lives in Sderot close to the Gaza border, known as ‘the bomb shelter capital of the world’. He was born the year the rocket attacks began. He and his sister, Agam, sleep in a bomb-proof safe-room.

Samar, 12, had taken refuge in a UN school with her parents and four siblings after being told to leave their home by the Israeli military. In the middle of the night, an attack on the school kills her father and leaves her mother in intensive care. The film follows Samar as she tries to rebuild her shattered life with no home and no father.

“We were sleeping when the rocket struck. Then the whole building collapsed on top of us. They had to pull us out of the rubble. What does all this have to do with us?”

The critic Cyril Connolly may not be widely read these days, but he is still famous for one infamous phrase: ‘There is no more sombre enemy of good art than the pram in the hall.’ Was Connolly wrong, and can children be a great spur to creativity? Or do children, with their all-consuming demands, inhibit an artistic life? Model, actress and digital entrepreneur Lily Cole is eight months pregnant, and she wants to explore this topic by talking to people with views on both sides of the argument.

The programme will look at the life and work of Barbara Hepworth, who juggled bringing up four children with her artistic career; Lionel Shriver delivers an essay on the joys of childlessness, while Lily meets Hollie McNish, a poet with a young child whose work is a riposte to Connolly’s ‘pram in the hall’. The programme will also explore artist Gavin Turk and his wife Deborah Curtis’s project, The House Of Fairy Tales, which has been delighting young people for almost a decade.

Tony Robinson takes a series of walks through some of Britain’s most historic and spectacular landscapes.

Tony’s walk in this episode takes him back to 1940 when - extraordinarily the sleepy county of Dorset became the frontline in the war against Hitler. His fiveday, 60-mile walk along the Jurassic coast reveals the county’s hidden World War II story.

Starting by the defences on Chesil Beach, Tony’s journey encompasses stunning scenery and amazing acts of ingenuity and bravery as he heads east to finish in Swanage and Studland Bay. He uncovers the strange part a world-famous swannery played in developing a secret weapon. He hears of the bravery of the man who won the Victoria Cross serving in Portland Harbour when it became one of the first places in Britain to be bombed by the Germans.

He reveals the role Dorset had to play in protecting Britain from invasion.

A Song For Jenny BBC1, 21.00 A Song For Jenny is the true story of Julie Nicholson’s response when her daughter Jenny’s was killed in the July 7 bombing at Edgware Road tube station. July 2015 marks the 10th anniversary of the 7/7 bombings in London, which killed 52 people and injured more than 700. It was the greatest loss of life in a British terrorist attack since the Lockerbie bombing in 1988.

Ten years on, BBC One’s A Song For Jenny will be a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in that tragedy.

Fake or Fortune?

Stephen Ames, a Cheshire property developer, has a problem - he’s inherited three small oil paintings believed to be by Laurence Stephen Lowry, an artist renowned for his scenes of northern life, but he doesn’t have any proof. All he knows is that they were bought by his father in the 70s. The trouble for Stephen is that LS Lowry is probably the most faked British artist, his deceptively simple style of painting making him a soft target for forgers.

As a result, the art market has become very wary of newly discovered Lowry works. If he can’t find evidence in favour of the pictures, they are worthless. As they hunt for proof with the assistance of specialist art researcher Dr Bendor Grosvenor, the team encounter unexpected obstacles and extraordinary coincidences, culminating in a groundbreaking scientific discovery that challenges everything we thought we knew about Lowry the artist. But is it enough to prove that the pictures are genuine?

A Deadly Warning: Srebrenica Revisited

Journalist Myriam François-Cerrah travels to Bosnia to mark the 20th anniversary of the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II. In July 1995, in the midst of war in the former Yugoslavia, around 8,000 Muslim men and teenaged boys were massacred at Srebrenica. Now Myriam, a British Muslim, is visiting the site with a group of young people - all of whom were born in the year of the genocide. In an often emotional trip they learn first-hand how easily prejudice can take hold and why this story has important lessons for us all in multicultural Britain today.

The diverse group of young people include Julie, the daughter of Colonel Bob Stewart, who was United Nations Commander of the British forces in Bosnia in the early 90s; and medical student Abdul, who is astonished that he didn’t hear about the story in school. He wonders why, as he feels that “when Muslim people die you don’t learn about it as much.”

The group are all ‘delegates’ for a British charity called Remembering Srebrenica. It is the organiser of UK events for Srebrenica Memorial Day on the 11 July. The UK is the only EU country to officially designate such a day of remembrance.

On this trip, Myriam observes the British students discovering what the story of Srebrenica means for us in Britain today and why it’s so important to remember.

Carol and Beverly continue to take drastic measures to hide their friendship from ever-suspicious Helen. With Helen out of town on business, there seems to be a window for them to enjoy each other’s company without looking over their shoulders. However, an ill-fated hike puts both Carol’s career and Sean and Beverly’s show in serious jeopardy.

Meanwhile, it’s lights, camera, action, as the shoot day for The Box arrives. Matt unenthusiastically takes centre stage in the role of gameshow host. Tensions remain high between Matt and the show’s producer Merc Lapidus. The two enemies continue to push each other’s buttons, with a final push bringing down the house.

The Met: Policing London BBC1, 21:00 Documentary following the officers of Britain’s biggest and busiest police service as they deal with life, death, crime and its victims, all across the capital. Over 50 per cent of new Met officers are from outside London, and Yorkshireman Tom Hebblethwaite has his work cut out finding his way around. During his training he must achieve some vital goals, from making an arrest to learning to march. The streets of London are a challenge for even the most experienced police constables, and response officers Caroline Hay and Karl Davies are old hands at dealing with the ups and downs of policing the public in Camden, North London. While putting up with verbal abuse from angry buskers is part of the job, it’s protecting some of society’s more vulnerable individuals that makes Caroline reflect on why she joined the service.

How to Get a Council House Channel 4, 21:00

A quarter of a million people in Britain are homeless.

This series goes behind the scenes with council officers in the country’s most densely populated city, Portsmouth, taking an unflinching look at the anger, resentment and desperation that arise when demand swamps supply for social housing.

Portsmouth has half as many council homes available as it did 30 years ago.

Meanwhile, the number of people making homeless applications to Portsmouth Council has risen by a third in one year.

And government plans to extend the right-to-buy scheme are expected to increase the pressure on social housing further still. Former naval engineer Gordon, who’s 61, has been homeless for nearly two years. The sudden death of his son led to alcoholism, the breakdown of his marriage and, finally, to life on the streets. He turns to Portsmouth City Council’s housing office for help.

“We’ve lost quite a lot of money. Where’s it gone? (laughs) But we hope to get it back.” Richard Branson Virgin Atlantic: Up in the Air is a new documentary series which goes behind the scenes of the colourful airline in its turbulent 30th year in business. With full and exclusive access, the series follows staff at all different levels of the business, from Richard Branson, and the Chief Exec to new cabin crew recruits and the boys in the warehouse, as the company rolls out a new plane, new uniforms and new people – and tries to get back in the black.

In episode one we meet the team at the Virgin Atlantic base in Crawley, preparing for the airline’s 30th birthday event. Richard Branson, who founded the airline when he was just 34, is making a rare appearance.

Although the airline is celebrating its staying power in a notoriously fickle business, times have been hard recently, with finances up and down and often millions in the red. Whilst he hasn’t been involved in the day to day running of the airline for more than ten years, Richard Branson is still the face of the brand. He says: “Fortunately, I’ve been in the airline business long enough to know that you have tough years and good years. (We’ll still be around in 30 years) as long as we keep reinventing ourselves and keep ahead of the crowd.”

With a small fleet of 38, some of Virgin’s planes have been in service for around 20 years. The airline is hoping that its route back into profit lies in their five billion pound investment of new fuel efficient Dreamliner planes, which will eventually replace half its existing fleet of older gas guzzlers.

Certifying Engineer Paul, says: “This (plane’s) design is 1980s, over 25 years old. So the computing power in your smart phone is easily a match for this. If you can keep your aircraft age young, then you can always stay in the game.”

The first Dreamliner is on the production line and Customer Experience Design Manager Nik Lusardi is off on an unusual shopping trip to the Boeing factory in the States, where he will select passenger

Filmed over a year with unprecedented access to the behind-the - scenes workings of one branch of NatWest in the north of England, this series lays bare the thorny relationship between British people, money and the bank. The bank needs to lend money to make money, but why do we borrow so much? Produced in partnership with the Open University, this final episode of this series looks at how people borrow money and how the bank lends it.

Back from maternity leave, young bank manager Claire needs to focus her team on lending money to customers - whether it’s for a new car, a new home or cosmetic surgery. Customers Brian and Elizabeth seek a loan to pay off the debt they have accumulated on seven credit cards whilst another customer, Farid, who came to Britain from Afghanistan aged 17, asks the bank for a small mortgage to buy his council flat.

Jonathan, part of the Cabin Crew Recruitment team, says: “The golden question, ‘What are we looking for?’ I guess it’s that natural enthusiasm, that natural warmth and friendliness. I’ve always said, you’re either naturally a Virgin Atlantic Crew Member or… maybe it’s not for you.”

The modest £12,500 starting salary hasn’t put off 58-year-old grandmother Katrine, who is hoping to fulfill her life long dream to become a ‘trolley dolly’. Katrine says: “It’s what I’ve been wanting to do for 25-30 years, and I feel the time is right. That’s why I haven’t gone for it before, I had young children so I couldn’t give 110% to the role at the time. It’s time for me now… touch wood!”

We follow the new recruits through training, styling and their eventful first flights to Cancun and Dubai. With delays, turbulence and passenger sickness, will their training have equipped the fledgling cabin crew with everything they need to make their first flights a success?

A batch of toxic pills has hit the market, killing two young people in days, and the police are struggling to find the source.

When the UNIT discover a link between the pills and the gang they’re investigating, Cartwright (Ewan Stewart) agrees it’s worth pursuing - but only if it’s to further their aims of getting higher up the organisation. No one wants this more than Ash (O-T Fagbenle), but he’s equally determined to stop more lethal pills from hitting the streets.

Tommy (Robert Lonsdale) follows the phone taps to lead them to Paulo (Gonzalo Ramos), a pizza delivery man who’s been persuaded by Scooter (Dexter Fletcher), an ex-rave promoter and dealer, to courier the pills. When Paulo is arrested both the police and the UNIT want to talk to him, but Scooter has other ideas.

Determined to maintain Paulo’s silence, he kidnaps his unsuspecting girlfriend Valentina (Ana-Maria Maskell). Paulo escapes police custody but the UNIT must get to him first to discover more about the operation, stop the lethal pills and save Valentina’s life. As Roach (Trevor Eve) waits to hear news of his foray into the pill business, he’s unaware of the net closing around him.

Alan Gardner is an award-winning garden designer.

But he’s no ordinary gardener.

Alan credits his success to what he calls ‘his gift’ - the fact that he has autism. Dallas Campbell reveals a fascinating and secret world hidden below Britain. In this episode he explores how what goes on underground keeps our country on the move. He delves into the past to discover how a secret wartime pipeline is now delivering fuel to Heathrow Airport. Extraordinary computer graphics lay bare the underwater engineering genius that allowed the iconic Forth Rail Bridge to be built in the 19th century. Along the way Dallas meets some of the hidden army of workers that keep Britain running from underground, from the drivers of the largest tunnelling machines in the world to the engineers running a vast power station under a mountain in Wales. In one memorable scene, he helps dislodge a ‘fatberg’ that’s blocking one of London’s sewers. And he does some secret filming of badgers that are threatening the foundations of a primary school, and helps to relocate the whole sett.

Celebrities compete in a contest of culinary skill. The final five celebrities are welcomed to the challenge in the last of the heats. Trying to impress judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace are actor Scott Maslen, Strictly Come Dancing professional Natalie Lowe, TV presenter Keith Chegwin, journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed and former boy band member Tom Parker. The first challenge is the invention test, where they have 50 minutes to create a sweet or savoury dish using the given ingredients, including squid, chicken and mangoes, as well as a larder. Next, the celebrities are sent to work during lunchtime service in two busy London restaurants, where they face paying customers for the first time. For the final test it’s back to the MasterChef headquarters, where the contestants prepare a two-course menu of their own design. They work furiously in a last attempt to prove themselves to the judges, because at the end of the test one of them will be going home.

Finally, sisters Ronnie, Carole and June re-trace a memorable trip to the seaside they first enjoyed in the 1960s.

By Jamie Droo THIS week’s article is inspired by the many DJs on the Island, filling lots of bars and hotels which put on cabaret shows and provide a host or compere for the evening.

There are also a vast number of fun pubs and party bars which provide entertainment via DJs. Back in the day, these guys and gals would have to carry with them a case full of vinyl records to play their set to the crowds.

The early Nineties saw the CD age, which made it a little easier for them. But they still had to carry 100’s of the little four-inch silver discs which today, in the grand scheme of things, make good Frisbees.

Nowadays most of a DJ’s record collection is stored in digital form, and he or she can transport tens of thousands of songs on a device no bigger than the palm of your hand. It means that just about every DJ here is now fully digitalised.

And although many could still revert to the old days with vinyl if necessary, most have now developed their skills and are making use of the technology at their fingertips.

To be a DJ is not just to stand behind your equipment and play your favourite songs because the art goes much deeper than that.

There are many different types of DJ who excel in their field or genre of music, with which they specialise. But all are able to apply their skill to any style of music.

That’s because they have a natural understanding of rhythm which, I believe, is something that cannot be taught. You either have it or you don’t.

ing to the song that’s being played in the bar down the road? They will never make DJ status because it’s essential to be able to recognise tempo and beats.

And if people cannot dance in time to the music, entertainment would not be their thing, generally.

Not that there is anything wrong with those who can’t dance but do. They provide DJs with entertainment, and many videos have been uploaded to You Tube by DJs chuckling at their inability to groove to the tunes.

A formula of music is also important, like reading the crowd and holding their attention by playing the right song at the right time.

Again, everyone has seen it happen and, maybe, you have even done it yourself, when a DJ drops a tune and it grabs the crowd’s

attention, whatever they are doing.

The drink goes down on the table, they throw their arms in the air and do a funny walk toward the dance floor - a walk that involves half-dancing and halfstrutting.

This happens across all genres and age groups.

Most DJ’s have a recovery song, or a guaranteed floorfiller, and this is when you will see the funny dance-walk the most.

Beat mixing is another fine DJ art. Although today’s technology will do this for them by just clicking the “Sync” option on their computer’s interface, most choose to do it by using their headphones and matching the beats between the songs and mixing them manually.

I’m sure I speak for a lot of DJs here and to them, allowing

a machine to mix for you would really be the same as a singer miming to a track.

I have stood alongside many Tenerife DJs and watched them work.

Papagayo’s Ben Simington is a house-music master and holds a wealth of experience in this genre. He has always kept up to date with the latest technology and, if there is a new gadget or piece of equipment on the market, he is always one of the first to try it out.

When I arrived in Tenerife, Ben was resident party DJ at Yates’s bar in the Starco area of Las Americas.

He was hugely popular and, though the music in his heart was house and dance music, he would play to the crowd and have them doing all kinds of crazy things, but mainly providing memories for people on their holidays.

Ben has worked in all the big bars where a DJ is present, and he has always been in demand. He now manages the DJs and all forms of entertainment at Papagayo Beach Club on Veronicas and really excels in what he does.

He has gained the respect of lots of mainstream names in the DJ world, hav-

ing worked alongside them at Papagayo. And he occasionally gets booked for gigs across the globe - It was not that long ago that he travelled to Japan to work.

So it makes for a pretty good living when it has been born from the love of music and the ability to mix beats and rhythms.

Now the summer is here and the Starco and Veronicas areas are becoming busier, this entertainment page will be paying homage to some of the Island’s DJs who have to deal with people, at the same time as doing their job.

Ever wondered why

DJ booths in busy clubs and bars are elevated and enclosed?

If you want the answer, you should seek out DJ Zeke. This guy has a lot of DJ experience and is extremely funny when you talk to him about the trials and tribulations of the job in a place like Tenerife.

I aim to seek him out in the forthcoming weeks and interview him about his time here in Tenerife.

So watch this space because I believe Zeke will want to set the world to rights.

It will definitely be tongue in cheek, but I’m sure it will also be funny and interesting.

big Russian sanctions Nadal’s olive service hammering Spain SPAIN’S food industry is the country’s worsthit sector by antiRussia sanctions, and the country’s reciprocal ban on food imports.

Agriculture and the food sector alone have lost 532 million euros, revealed Manuel Sanchez Melero, the Economic and Trade Adviser to the Spanish Embassy in Moscow.

“Imports of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish to Russia disappeared,” said Sanchez Melero, adding that in 2014, Spanish imports from Russia decreased by 9.4% and exports to Russia decreased by 26.5%, compared with 2013.

The European Union, the US and their allies

imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russia for its alleged involvement in the 2014 Ukrainian crisis.

Moscow, which has repeatedly denied those allegations, responded last August to Western restrictions by imposing a year-long ban on cer-

tain food imports from the countries which hit Russia with economic restrictions.

On Monday, the European Union extended its anti-Russia sanctions for another six months in a move welcomed by the United States. But Moscow has

vowed to respond to the extension.

According to the Spanish diplomat, the second worst-hit area of Spanish-Russian cooperation is tourism.

In the first quarter this year, Spain saw a 25% decrease in Russian holiday-makers against the same period last year.

Sanchez Melero said supplies of Spanish cars, ceramics and pharmaceuticals to Russia suffered significant losses, not only because of western sanctions and counter-measures but as a result of a decline in demand and an unfavourable, economic environment.

But the diplomat still considers Russia “a priority country” and that Spanish leaders continue efforts to support and promote bilateral business activity and trade.

SPANISH tennis legend Rafael Nadal was installed as celebrity spokesman for the country’s Aceitunas de EspanaOlives at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City, from last Sunday to Tuesday.

The annual food festival is among the most prominent in the world of international culinary trade shows, where importers, distributors, chefs and hospitality professionals meet to display and promote their products and find new customers.

Convention Centre, featured more than 2,500 exhibitioners and attracted around 30,000 visitors.

The campaign slogan “Born in Spain, admired all over the world’”, reflects Nadal’s values and the products, in terms of leadership, quality, effort, health and above all, their Spanish origin.

The show included educational activities aimed at a professional audience, such as tasting and demonstrations, with a variety of olives, showing the wide range of Spanish goods.

Spanish chef Jose Menendez, a professor at one of New York’s most prestigious culinary institutes, the International Culinary Centre, joined Nadal in heading the events.

Lupita Parque de la Reina has a secret - Lupita restaurant is fast becoming the place to eat, and it has a well-deserved reputation.

By Vanessa Vee FOLLOWING my review of the Hotel Costa Los Gigantes suites last week, I felt the spa circuit there deserved its own review because is also open to the general public.

When we checked in, we were given two free vouchers for the thermal circuit, to be used in the first 48 hours.

It proved quite difficult to find a suitable time slot because young children are not permitted. But, cleverly, we managed to work a child-free 90 minutes, thanks to the kids’ club and crèche.

As expected, a highquality, clinically-clean, professionally-run wellness centre was on offer, and we were welcomed with flip-flops and shower caps!

The spa is wellequipped with many facilities to experience ... and experience them we did! A large thermal pool, very inviting, was supported by 32 massage stations. The powerful hydro-jets did the job where required and released the tension.

And, as you can imagine, given the number of stations, this circuit alone took some time to get round. The floata-

tion tank enticed me next because this was something I had always wanted to experience.

Wow, this was pure heaven … a darkened room with a bath-temperature pool. To just lie there and float was luxurious. I’d love to have written that I just drifted with thoughts and let myself totally relax.

But, laughably, the time was always on my mind because punctuality was a “must” when picking up the kids.

Venturing on to the long line of showers was next. I always think of these as Russian roulette because you never know quite what is going to happen next.

Will it be hot? Will it be cold? Will it be a water mist, or will it be a bucket of freezing cold water dumped on my head?

As we weaved in and out of each experience, next stop for me was the jacuzzi, having convinced myself I didn´t have time to take a dip in the ice pool!

The sauna, steam room and Roman baths were also sampled, plus the corridor of stones, which is encouraged to stimulate circulation after you’ve finished the circuit.

This led into the relaxation room, which offered yet another tranquil encounter ... stone-

tiled, moulded sunloungers in a secluded room, accompanied by relaxing music and offering the ultimate in peace.

By now, sadly, time had run out and we had to skip the complimentary tea and fruit bar. But believe me, I will be back, minus the rug rats, because this is such a highly-impressive circuit - and I have visited most of them in Tenerife.

The Bay Spa circuit, inside the Hotel Costa Los Gigantes, is available for just 22 euros per person, and reservations are not necessary.

Alternatively you can purchase a bono, offering 10 circuits for 180 euros. As expected, there is also a great line-up of massages, therapies and facials available.

Another excellent offer which caught my eye was an adult-and-child spa session (minimum age six) for children, and these are held at specific times. The spa opening hours are from 10am to 8pm, seven days a week For further information, please call 922 867 266, ext 2999.

Incidentally, residents can by a day-pass for the all-inclusive hotel and spa, between 10am6pm for 50 euros. The hotel alone costs 40 euros.

LET’S NOT SPLIT ENDS

THERE’S no cure, no magic potion, no special salon treatment, so what are you going to do about your SPLIT ENDS?

Split hair has many reasons why it gets like that in the first place: too much heat, too much colour. too much sun, etc. We all know how it’s caused, but what can you do to prevent it getting like that in the first place?

Firstly, you need to study your haircare regime carefully. Think about how you treat your hair, and how best you can stop it going downhill - fast!

For instance, are you using a decent shampoo conditioner and masque? These should be for dry/damaged hair if you are prone to getting split hair, because there’s no miracle once you have split ends.

Honestly, THERE IS NO CURE, so please don’t waste money on supermarket brands that say on the bottle: “Mends split ends.”

It’s impossible because once the hair shaft has split, there is only one solution.

Look at my diagram. It is not a piece of broken wood but what your hair looks like when split. So now tell me you believe a conditioner can put this right!

When hair splits like this, it must be cut straight to prevent further damage. There’s no getting away from

it - scissors are the only answer.

So your thinking: “Well I’ll just keep the split ends and thus, keep my hair long.” Wrong!

Those split parts will “travel” up your hair shaft and won’t just result in a totally split hair that’s parted in two.

It actually means another, greater amount of hair must be removed to save the rest. Act before it’s too late. Remove the offending hairs and it might take just a few cuts to return your hair to its former glory.

So what can you do to stop it getting to this level in the first place?

Never rub your hair with a towel but always blot it gently.

Always use a heat-defence spray to protect your strands, and never over-dry or over-iron your hair because this causes the worst form of damage.

Be gentle when brushing, too, and always use a flexible brush when wet and dry. Your hair is at its weakest when wet, so always treat it with respect … and it will remain healthy and strong.

By Monica Dyson AL T H O U G H breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day, it seems that around one-third of us struggle to find time to eat it.

There are obvious advantages to eating breakfast. It’s much cheaper to prepare your own at home than grab a slice of toast and a coffee on the way to work.

The cost can add up to an amazing sum - and if you are so rushed each morning, then get up a bit earlier! Not that it applies to us healthy pensioners, of course!

Having a bowl of cereal, especially oatbased, keeps you going for much longer, and it seems that people who skip breakfast are disproportionately more likely to have problems with concentration, metabolism, weight control and cardiac health.

You don’t have to fall into a sugar trap if you know what you are eating, with endless choices of cereals and other breakfast foods, by shopping for your own.

You can’t beat a Full English

It is surprising how culturally-diverse breakfast actually is. In a hotel when I was on holiday in Dubai, a British woman remarked when watching the Middle Eastern guests filling their plates with falafel, humus, curry and flat bread: “Don’t they eat some strange things for breakfast!”

In actual fact, it wasn’t strange to them - just different from our traditional British breakfasts - and she did give me a funny look as I filled my plate with sushi!

Breakfast, whatever you eat, is just that - the breaking of fast, and the first meal taken after a night’s sleep. And for most people, a gap of at least 12 hours between food.

Breakfast is believed to have originated in England as early as the 15th century, from the Christian custom of fasting from food between supper and receiving Holy Communion the next morning.

Foregoing the natural craving to eat was seen as an act of self-denial.

There is evidence that the ancient Egyptians

ate meat and onions, washed down with beer, before going out to work on the land.

Today, we are all familiar with the “Big or Full English Breakfast”, or even the “Full Monty” as it’s called in some places. It’s so popular as a meal that you can practically get an “All-Day Breakfast” in any café.

Of course, that refers to the Brits’ love of a good nosh, and it can comprise bacon, egg, fried bread, mushrooms, tomatoes, hashbrowns, sausage, black pudding and plenty of toast. With, of course, an unlimited supply of good, strong English tea. A must for some people when booking a holiday destination!

Practically the only country I have heard of which shares the Brits’

love of a really large spread at breakfast is Poland, where they love a wide variety of meat, sausages and bread.

However, not everyone can stomach a big breakfast early in the morning, and many of us are much happier with the Continental breakfast, which is a much more circumspect affair of cold meats, cheeses, croissants and jams.

Funnily enough, although I do enjoy a cooked breakfast, it has to be nearer lunchtime or even as an evening meal, which I think defeats the object of it!

In Russia, they love their porridges; in Japan - rice, sushi, miso soup and Japanese pickles; in Burma - fried rice, boiled peas, and naan bread. And in Jamaica - ackee or salt fish.

We have always had an idea of the American breakfast, possibly from what we have seen on American movies.

But actually, whereas Americans did once enjoy steak and eggs, they have embraced a more Westernised way of eating today.

Charles Dickens, on a visit to the US, said: “No breakfast in America is a breakfast without a T bone steak!’

However, their love of waffles and pancakes with maple syrup and bacon is still around.

And if you do order bacon and eggs, you will be surprised to find that Americans like fresh fruit and blueberry muffins with theirs!

You will also be perplexed when you are asked how you like your fried eggs: “Easy over?”

The country-house breakfast, dating from the mid-19th century to the Second World War, was enjoyed by the gentry or upper-classes.

In buffet style, it consisted of dishes to include game, devilled kidneys and kedgeree and would be kept warm for an hour or so by means of warming plates.

It bore no resemblance to the presentday breakfasts, and was served to give the menfolk a hearty meal before they did what any self-respecting “toff” did: hunting, shooting and fishing!

A light picnic would be taken out to them at lunchtime, and then they would enjoy a sumptuous evening dinner, of many courses.

Today, breakfast is still a big tradition, whatever country you are in, But a later brunch has become something of a social occasion in countries like Dubai, home to many young ex pats.

There, a late Fridaymorning extensive buffet brunch, together with copious amounts of alcohol, sets the scene for the weekend.

Cool way to treat pets WITH the high summer temperatures now upon us, please remember to keep your pets safe by ensuring they have plenty of shade, and cool water to drink.

That’s a tough ask, obviously, in this weather, but a cool-box ice-block in a bucket of water will help keep it remain cool much longer. You can also add a handful of icecubes.

And please, avoid walking your dog on the hot pavements during the day to prevent their pads from burning.

Also, NEVER leave your dog in a car unattended. The inside of a car can get very hot, very quickly. If a dog is left alone, the heat can have a detrimental effect on it a lot sooner than you might think.

When the temperature reaches 22C/72F outside, the temperature inside a car can reach 47C/117F within an hour. And leaving your window open, or covering your windscreen, has little effect on keeping the vehicle cool.

Dogs in hot cars can begin to pant very

quickly, which can signal the start of heatstroke. Once that occurs, it can die very quickly.

So if you see a dog locked in a car during the summer, please contact the local police immediately. You may just save its life!

Easy way to adopt We have 220 dogs in residence at the refuge, all awaiting adoption eagerly.

Every dog is micro-chipped, passported, castrated, fully-inoculated and has a clean bill of health.

No adoption fee is required, but donations

are always welcomed to help with the running costs here.

Kids’ learning curve The school holidays have soon come around again, which means our educational programme has finished until the autumn.

We have entertained more than 1,500 children at the refuge in the first half of the year, teaching them about animal welfare.

Our aim is always to help them have a better understanding of our four-legged friends, in the hope of reducing animal cruelty here on our Island.

There was food aplenty for all, and live entertainment was provided by local singer Big Chris. Guest speaker

Mary Suarez, from the British Consulate, kindly gave up her time to meet the organisers and helped serving food, together with Clio O’Flynn, well known in the Adeje area for furthering contacts between the local and expat communities.

Both women spent their time chatting with people to find out how they could work more closely to help this community, in conjunction

with the Noah’s Ark Association. The Association team venture into the community each week, meeting and be-

friending anyone without a permanent home.

They offer support with food, clothing and toiletries, kindly do-

nated by charity shops, church members and local people.

Assistance also comes in the form of contact

with local authorities, social services and consulates to help with lost or stolen paperwork, contacting family or friends, transport to hospitals and rehabilitation when needed.

At the moment, clothes etc, are stored in team members’ homes and in the boots of their cars, so the Association are in desperate need of permanent premises for storage.

It is hoped that such a locale or apartment would also be able to offer shower and toilet facilities. If anyone can help, the Association would be delighted to hear from them.

President Jackie’s family affair THE sudden death of Jo Aylott has shocked her family, friends and customers at Herman’s Supermarket, on Amarilla Golf’s Pebble Beach.

Jo, a happy-go-lucky assistant who worked there for two years, had been absent with a backache for a few weeks and was expected to return at any time.

Tragically, doctors at Candelaria hospital last week diagnosed lung cancer, and other serious ailments.

The 54-year-old mother of two, who remained cheerful despite the dreadful news, vowed to fight the disease. But she never had a chance, passing away peacefully on Monday.

Mandi Weatherley, who worked alongside her at Herman’s, said: “We were good friends for a long while - I recommended her to Herman in

the first place - and this came as a real shock to both of us, and everyone else who knew her.

“Jo was always cheerful, making regular customers feel welcome at the supermarket, and she enjoyed a good laugh.”

A memorial service for Jo takes place at noon today (Friday) at San Blas Catholic Church, on Golf del Sur. And as mark of respect, Herman is closing the supermarket from 11am-4pm. “She was a valued member of staff and we will miss her terribly.” he said. “It is hard to believe she died so quickly.”

Jo, whose marriage broke up some time ago, is survived by her son, Charlie, a chef who works in Costa del Silencio, her daughter Cherie, who has flown over for the service, and grandson Ryan.

SAN Miguel Lions Club enjoyed yet another successful President’s Night, with Jackie taking over from Nan.

And it became a real family affair as Jackie’s husband, Luis, joined in the celebrations, along with her sister-in-law, Anabelen, who arrived from La Palma with her daughter, Carmenola.

The rest of the evening followed the same happy pattern: an excellent meal and live entertainment provided by singer Chris, whose family were also there, soaking up the atmosphere.

The poisoned chalice!

By Val Sainsbury THEY’RE at it again! Another of the UK’s leading, national newspapers comes into its own! An interesting piece tells us about a research by scientists, who claim that sugary drinks are killing as many as 184,000 adults, globally, every year.

Fast-forward several pages and, lo and behold, we are treated to a lengthy article, outlining the joys of making and drinking elderflower cordial.

All very summery, you may think. A delicious alternative to orange squash, colas and the myriad of “soft” drinks on the market, here in Tenerife and the world over.

But, take a look at one of the main ingredients of this “poisoned chalice”. We are told to add 1kg (2.25 lbs) of sugar to 1.5 litres (2.6 pints) of water.

Of course, we would then dilute this concoction, according to our FORGET your ideas on lace, or anything resembling a tablecloth. One of the summer’s big hits on the fashion front is cut-out clothing - right from your bag to your shoes and even your dress.

Whatever health benefits there may be in the elderflowers would be negated by the addition of so much sugar.

A commenter on the online version of this particular newspaper article wrote: ”If anyone has a recipe that is not full of poison (sugar), LET US KNOW.” Needless to say, he had many more readers disagreeing with him than agreeing. Sums it all up, really!

Little wonder there is so much confusion

among the public when we are force-fed conflicting advice and information by these so-called, respectable newspapers.

Soft drinks, fruit drinks, energy drinks and sweetened, iced teas are causing thousands of fatalities ... and they have no health benefits whatsoever.

These sugar-laden refreshments are implicated in the annual deaths, worldwide, of over 133,000 people from diabetes, 45,000 from cardiovascular disease and 6,450 from cancer.

What these three dis-

eases are associated with, generally, is the high sugar consumption, and authorities the world over have received warnings that their priority should be to banish such drinks from people’s diets.

These sweetened drinks, it is believed, were responsible for the deaths of 1,316 people in the UK last year.

Kawther Hashem, nutritionist from campaign group’s Action on Sugar, said: “More evidence is showing the alarming impact of sugary drinks on our health, the healthcare

service and the economy. These huge, profitmaking drinks companies should reformulate their products with less sugar.”

The scientists’ research study involved a variety of soft drinks, all containing a minimum of 50 calories per 240ml.

These included sodas, fruit drinks, sweetened iced tea, home-made sugary drinks and even sports or energy drinks.

Bear in mind, a can of Coca-Cola contains 101 calories per 240ml, or 139 overall - and it’s been a popular drink globally for many, many years.

Dariush Mozaffarian, the study’s senior author, from Tufts University, Boston, said the drinks should be cut from diets, specifically, to save lives.

“It should be a global priority to substantially reduce or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages,” he said.

“Some population dietary changes, such as increasing fruits and vegetables, can be challenging because of agriculture, costs, storage, and other complexities.”

He added: “But there are no health benefits from sugar-sweetened beverages, and the potential impact of reducing consumption will save tens of thousands

of deaths each year.”

The study’s findings, published in the Circulation journal, calculated sugar consumption by examining 62 dietary surveys involving 611,971 individuals across 51 countries, along with data on sugar’s availability, nationwide, Surprisingly, younger adults were affected more dramatically than their seniors.

Gitanjali Singh, who helped write the study, said: “If these young people continue to consume high levels, this will be compounded by the effects of ageing. It will lead to even higher death and disability rates from heart disease and diabetes.”

Home-made sugary drinks are popular in the Latin America/Caribbean region, along with regular, commercial varieties.

Gitanjali added: “Among the 20 countries with the highest, estimated sugar-sweetened, beverage-related deaths, at least eight were in the Latin America/Caribbean area, reflecting the high intakes there.”

Be warned: watch what you’re drinking, and check that NO sugar has been added. If it has, don’t buy it! Tiresome, yes, but worth every second spent!

This look is about elegance and not flaunting what’s beneath, so choose it carefully.

Core control so vital

of Activate Sports Club IF ever there were a wonder-drug equivalent in the world of physical exercise, Pilates is it.

The chosen activity of top athletes, senior citizens, pregnant women and A-list celebs alike is perfect for everyone.

Yes, everyone. Old, young, injured, or fit, the exercises can be tailored for any age and capabilities - rather like a medical prescription, designed for your specific needs and goals.

Anyone who’s ever tried it will know firsthand just how much of a positive impact it can have on your physical and, especially mental well-being.

People who haven’t yet tried it often hold two common, large misconceptions: firstly, they

think it’s easy - it’s really, really not! Even “top” sportsmen are often unable to perform some of the exercises because they have insufficient strength of the deeper muscle tissue involved.

Secondly, people think that a couple of “light stretches” here and there will not really get you into shape. My response to these comments is simply “Try it”.

Pilates is extremely hard work, if you are performing the movements correctly.

In fact, the level of concentration involved is so high that it’s pretty much impossible to think about anything else except correct breathing, belly-button in, shoulders down, pelvis tilted forward, proper cervical alignment and contracted glute muscles.

This makes it very therapeutic, and perfect for forgetting any stress you may have outside the class.

The “real name” for Pi-

lates is actually Contrology. At least, that’s what its founder, German Joseph Hubertus Pilates, called it.

A childhood plagued by sickness led to him becoming obsessed with obtaining the perfect physique. He educated himself to expert level on all manner of things, from yoga and bodybuilding to martial arts and anatomy. And he became convinced that poor health was caused by bad posture, inefficient breathing and the pressures of modernday living.

His followers never used the official name, calling the method after the man himself, and today, Pilates has millions

of devoted fans around the world.

Basically, it’s a series of mat-or equipmentbased exercises. Matbased Pilates is performed on the floor, barefoot, with gravity and your own body weight to provide resistance.

Additional equipment such as balls, elastic bands and plastic rings are also used for added resistance. Most Pilates classes are mat-based.

The equipment-based exercises use speciallymade, slightly intimidating-looking, apparatus that work against spring-loaded resistance.

Some of the machines look as though you’re

learning how to become trapeze artists; others bring to mind Victorian torture methods. But there is no denying their effectiveness. With the help of the machines, muscles you never knew you had are activated and stretched.

How does it work?

The main aim of Pilates is to strengthen your core - the muscles in your back, stomach and bottom. The stronger the muscles in your core, the better your posture will be, and the greater your stability.

But the other main plus to Pilates is the awareness it brings about your body and your posture, as well as your mind-body connection.

Pilates works the entire body with every movement, rather than just one muscle group, and, whereas yoga is made up of a series of static postures, Pilates is based on putting yourself into unstable

postures and challenging your body by moving your arms and legs.

Benefits The list of benefits people report is endless.

Some of the most common include: Improved posture; stronger core muscles; toned, lean muscles; increased flexibility; better concentration and improved coordination.

Pilates is a low-impact workout, meaning that just about anyone can take part. However, I cannot stress the importance of making sure the exercises are performed correctly. If you are not monitored correctly, you could end up injuring your back or neck.

Everything set for big Ingane Yami golf day THE sixth annual Ingane Yami Golf Tournament takes place tomorrow (Saturday) and, for the third consecutive year, it is beng staged on the Costa Adeje course.

Organised by the staff at Pearly Grey Ocean Club, with the help of resident golfer Stephen Moore, the aim is to provide a memorable and enjoyable day for the golfers, and raise awareness and funds for Ingane Yami Children’s

Village. The whole day will be broadcast live on Oasis Fm by Steve Philips and Darren Clarke.

The event is now firmly established on the Tenerife golfing circuit and, again, we will be welcoming players from Tenerife, the UK and South Africa.

Ingane Yami is a nonprofit organisation, whose purpose is to provide a stable family environment for orphaned children in the KwaZulu

Natal province.

Pearly Grey Ocean Club have been active partners with the charity since 2009 - and in that time their staff have raised more than 80,000 euros.

The event gets underway at 9.30am with a shotgun start. And afterwards, There is a fine buffet, presentation and, of course, an auction and raffle. And there are some amazing prizes up for grabs including:

WELL, well, didn’t see that one coming.

Boothen Army, Division 1 leaders and early pacesetters, have been on fire since day one and look to be real contenders for the title.

They could still challenge, but not with many more results like this one. They were demolished at Bar 180 A, despite Sam’s fifth 180, and saved their blushes only by taking the trebles leg.

Millennium Stadium to host the European final CARDIFF’S Millennium Stadium has been chosen

by UEFA to stage the 2017 Champions League final.

The Welsh capital was highly fancied to host the 3rd June final, and Wales stars Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey welcomed the news on Twitter.

Bale wrote: “I know how passionate Welsh football fans are, so it’s

great the final is coming to my home city of Cardiff.”

Arsenal’s Ramsey is clearly hoping his team make the 2017 showpiece final, Tweeting: “The Millennium Stadium is a fantastic stadium. It’ll be a brilliant occasion. I’d love to be part of it.”

During Wembley’s refurbishment, the Welsh stadium held English football’s showcase events, from 2001 to 2006, including the FA

Cup and League Cup finals, and the Football League play-offs.

It also staged football matches during the 2012 Olympics and was the venue for last year’s Super Cup final, starring Welsh hero Bale in the winning Real Madrid side.

Cardiff will also host the 2017 Women’s Champions League final, to be held at Cardiff City Stadium on 1st June.

Hamilton’s ‘Olympic’ dream LEWIS Hamilton plans to stage his own “Olympic” show at Silverstone on Sunday by winning the British Grand Prix, topping the podium again … and awarding himself a gold medal!

The F1 world champion says a third success in his home race would mean as much to him as winning a Games gold medal.

Hamilton, whose lead in the championship has been trimmed to 10 points by team-mate and arch-rival Nico Rosberg, might even have one forged because of the poor quality of F1 trophies in recent years.

Despite one of the finest wins of his career in front of his own fans in 2008, another victory in 2014 plus two pole starts, he is on a mission to earn his gold stylishly.

Following his disappointing, all-round performance in the Austrian Grand Prix two

weeks ago - in practice and during a race in which he finished second to Rosberg - he is determined to dominate throughout.

Not only does the twotime champion want to win at a canter on Sunday, he is also determined to top every practice session and win from pole in front of his own fans.

“I won last year but I didn’t get pole, so it wasn’t a perfect weekend,” said Hamilton.

“So I don’t know whether I have had a weekend where I have really dom-

inated. That has been the target - dominating weekends and conquering the circuit, through practice, qualifying and the race.”

Hamilton added: “I hope I can go there and make people proud. I remember watching Nigel Mansell holding the Union Jack in the car.

“It is like the Olympics, like a gold medal, having the flag in the car after winning the Grand Prix. It is the closest thing I can imagine to having a gold medal.

“I might just get a medal made for myself I have got enough gold!”

But Hamilton, contesting his ninth British Grand Prix, is aware that there is immense pressure to deliver for the fans.

“There is a lot of pressure when you go to your home Grand Prix,” he said. “Most of it comes from yourself, but there is the added pressure of the fans’ expectations.”

But at 30, he knows the clock is ticking. “I am noticing the years go by now,” he admitted. “I might have seven chances at Silverstone left, which seems like a lot but it isn’t. They are precious opportunities.

“So when you lose out on one, the feeling to come back and do it again the following year is even greater.”

He is the bookmakers’ choice to win, and he expects to be presented with the famous gold RAC Trophy and not last year’s cheap Santander version.

“It’s the only trophy there is for Silverstone,” he insisted. “Last year, they gave me this plastic thing!The gold one is really special and I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”

Hamilton is hoping to break a long-standing record, held by Sir Jackie Stewart since 1970: leading 18 consecutive races.

Spanish suing over winter World Cup THE Spanish football league are taking legal action against FIFA for switching Qater’s 2022 World Cup to November-December to avoid the Gulf state’s high summer temperatures.

The world’s governing body made the announcement in March, rejecting a joint proposal from the European Club Association (ECA) and Association of European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL) to stage the event between 5th May and 4th June.

La Liga President Javier Tebas has confirmed that the appeal against FIFA’s decision has been lodged with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

A Spanish sports newspaper quoted Tebas, a trained lawyer, as saying the move is “in defence of the interests of the clubs that are contributing to the international teams”.

He also claimed that three independent reports concluded that the league would lose 65 million euros as a re-

sult of FIFA’s decision.

Tebas called on European leagues in Germany, Italy and France to support the legal action. “They haven’t dared to sign the agreements - there is still much fear of FIFA,” he said. “Using legal channels when there is difference of opinion is what civilised people do.

“No one should be afraid to resort to legal action in order to claim their legitimate rights, but there are those who are still afraid.”

But the French League have already backed the action, issuing a statement saying they were “ready to support any legal action against FIFA. They added: “We must defend the interests of all clubs and not just those who give players to national teams.”

But UEFA President Michel Platini, a staunch critic of FIFA President Sepp Blatter, supported the winter switch, saying: “It is in the interest of the players and fans.”
