‘Less is more’ says Canary Chief

Continued from front.

Clavijo has been trying to make his mark but instead, a perfectly reasonable idea has been taken by some to mean something completely different. And the ‘Lanzagrotty’ headline in The Times was a cheap shot. One of his big announcements this week was a controversial suggestion that tourism could be capped and that the tourist sector should be focused on quality over quantity. Clavijo is keen to avoid the so called “Magaluf effect”, which has seen some resorts crucified in the British papers. And while it is true that Tenerife had problems in the early Nineties, the Island is now a completely different place from those hedonistic times. Veronicas and Starco are a shadow of the “glory days”, and tens of millions of euros have been spent upgrading the tourist resort. But Clavijo is not taking any chances. He told The Times newspaper this week “The pursuit of the largest number of tourists is killing quality in Spain. It is the Magaluf effect. “Lots of people come from Britain and what they need is a quality resort. We don’t want to attract 20 million tourists each year and then they do not have a good time. We may need to put limits.” Tourism chief Fernando Fraile agrees, saying: “It is time to think of the quality of tourism we are offering” while his counterpart in Gran Canaria, Pedro Quevedo, says: “We should limit the growth of the industry, ban building on some areas and protect the environment.” It seems the new Canarian Boss has the thumbs up from professionals who buy into his view of more quality tourism. Clavijo’s comments tie in with a speech earlier this week when he revealed that he wanted to get to grips with the tourism sector. He has a few ideas up his sleeves and said he wants “some muchneeded reflection within the industry. “We beat records with 13 million visitors last year and the tourist sector accounts for 30% of our GDP,” he said.

“But the All Inclusive market is 25% of that business, and we are committed to excellence. We want these tourists not to just stay in a hotel, but to consume our culture, heritage and enjoy our stores.” The All Inclusive topic is a political hot potato. Nobody wants to lose 25% of his trade, and the point Tenerife Cabildo head Carlos Alonso always makes is: “If people want All Inclusive, why can we not offer All Inclusive?” Clavijo’s comments cover the whole of the Canary Islands, but especially here and in Lanzarotte, where the All Inclusive market continues to growth at a steady pace. Travel writer Annie Bennett told The Daily Telegraph “While large areas of all the islands are designated nature reserves and are already popular for outdoor

tourism, Clavijo is likely to meet fierce opposition to any plans to limit visitor numbers with the knock-on effect on jobs in a region where 30% of people are unemployed, rising to 56% for the under-25s.” Clavijo also said this week that work needed to be done on the in-

frastructure, stressing: “The airport in Tenerife South is at 90% capacity. We need a plan for the next eight or 10 years. And we need to look at it now.” This is nothing especially new, but the previous regime spent most of its time trying to halt the change of ownership

of the airport, rather than concentrating on a long-term plan. There was some good news from the new President as it seems he is keen get to grips with the controversial private holiday-rental market mess. Changes regarding private holiday rentals, proposed by his predecessor, Paulino Rivero, will be reviewed because, he said: “The result has not satisfied anyone - the owners, the tourist sector or the hotels.” Rivero’s plan would have killed off the holiday-rental market for the small landlord, but Clavijo’s pledge to look at the situation again will mean a legal stay. Clavijo has yet to meet Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, but he enjoys a very good relationship with the Tourism Minister José Manuel Soria. “I know and like him, and we talk often,” said Clavijo. “I want us to start rebuilding relations with the State, and we have lots to cover.”

Agonising death for this tragic Canaries woman A YOUNG women in La Palma suffered a gruesome death at the hands of her ex-boyfriend in a murder that again highlighted domestic violence in Spain.

The 27-year-old women, named as Laura, died in La Palma’s Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital, just 90 minutes after her former partner sprayed her body with petrol and lit a match. The Canary Islands Health emergency service got the victim to

hospital inside 25 minutes and she was alive when she entered the emergency unit. But hospital staff quickly assessed that she had suffered 90% burns to her body, which proved fatal. According to an eyewitness, the boyfriend fled the scene before the emergency services arrived and he also suffered some serious burns. He was quickly apprehended by police and then taken to the same hospital where his ex died. It is understood that he was in a serious condition. He will remain there under police guard until he is sta-

bilised, and will then be transferred to the Burns Unit of Seville General Hospital. The 30-year-old, of Santa Cruz de La Palma, did not appear to have a violent past. But several neighbours and friends of the victim told the local press of a bullying relationship. During their separation, his girlfriend spoke of suffering physical and psychological abuse. Eye-witnesses said there was a disturbance at the victim’s workplace shortly before lunch-time. They spoke of a muffled sound and an explosion. Then there were

shouts and a mass of black smoke. One witness spoke of “a terrible smell”. Laura’s body burned while two women who were shopping at the shoe store where the incident occurred tried to call for help, and one lady ran after the attacker. After torching his girlfriend, the man walked up the street to a health centre and requested attention for his wounds. Meanwhile, people crowded around the victim’s body and, when an officer from the national police arrived, they directed him to where the attacker had fled.

Technology

buzz for thousands ONE of the major conferences in the world of technology, taking place at the Santa Cruz fairgrounds this week, has been hailed a success.

Photo: FRAN PALLERO

Technology enthusiasts from all over the globe jetted in for the five-day event conference, which ends today (Friday), with more than 2,000 people registered in the first hour alone. The event started with a real treat as organisers revealed that internet speed access of up to 30 gigabytes would be available all week long. Forty members of staff and over 200 volunteers made sure the event

ran smoothly. Most participants said it “gives them a better chance to connect and navigate to a higher speed.” The event is also a chance to have “fun with their colleagues”. The opening ceremony was attended by Cabildo President Carlos Alonso; Antonio García Marichal, Minister of Economy, Competitiveness and Innovations and Alfonso Cabello, Councillor for Economic Development, Employment, Tourism and Trade for Santa Cruz. Alonso started the countdown, which led to a spectacular lighting show featuring hundreds of screens. The event was divided into five sections: Lan Party TLP, TLP Summer-Con, Innova TLP, TLP and

TLP Expo eSports. Within Innova TLP, there were 40 speakers, including star guest Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari - one of the largest companies in video game history - and Ian Livingstone, co-founder of the Games Workshop firm. One of the exhibitions in TLP Media featured journalists specialising in video games, like Meristation, GamingBusters or Eurogamer. More than 200 events will have taken place by the end of play today, including a variety of contests and workshops. The conference, aimed at tech professionals, also served as an annual meeting for programmers and all those enthusiasts and professionals who live and/or work within the sector.

Thousands honour the seafarers’ patron saint YOU couldn’t move for people and flower petals in Puerto de la Cruz on Tuesday for the annual Virgen del Carmen procession.

The religious offering departs the historic Church of the Peña de Francia, where it is paraded through the streets on the traditional yearly trip to the harbour in an event attracting thousands of people to honour the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. The streets of the northern municipality were dressed in gala fashion for this fiesta. Canarian and Spanish flags hung from balconies, and music was played all day long as families and friends gathered to celebrate the patron saint. Religious events began in the afternoon with Holy Mass,

attended by Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, Insular Employment Councillor Efrain Medina and

Puerto Mayor Lope Afonso, among other members of the local and insular corporations.

Shortly before 6.30pm, the Virgen’s carriers, belonging to the Brotherhood of the Virgen del Carmen, were placed at the gates of the temple to wait.

In total, this team comprise 127 men spread over three shifts to carry the mighty, 1,000-kilo carving of the Virgen, decorated with flowers. The first group take the image on their

shoulders to the dock, the second pick it up in the water and take it down La Ranilla street, and the third return it to the temple. Carmelo Hernandez, Brotherhood Master of Ceremonies, said: “All sections of the procession and shipment of the Virgen del Carmen are very emotional,” and especially for a person like himself, who has been living this festival since childhood. But he would like the party to go back in time about 30 years. “Many people see the ‘holidays del Carmen’ as a recreational activity.” he added. “But, in truth, it is a religious act and should combine better. The Virgen is the essence of this day and without it, there would be no party.” Thus, the memory of the celebrations of yesteryear “when the party in the street lasted until 3am and then people would get ready to attend the shipment,” he said.

Families are joining ISIS ENTIRE Spanish families, and not just single youths and fathers leaving their wives and children behind, are now heeding the call to fight jihad in Syria and Iraq.

The families are moving into ISIS combat zones, where they are rewarded with bonus payments of up to 20,000 euros. Fourteen families, whose members are either Spanish or resident in Spain, have joined the ISIS ranks. The terrorists dream not just of thousands of foreign combatants to topple the governments of Syria and Iraq, but also of women and children to form the foundations of a new society - a new caliphate. Spanish law enforcement investigators said that among the 115 jihadists who have travelled there from Spain, there are 14 families and 20 minors. “The tally is actually higher because we didn’t count children or babies,” said an antiterrorist source familiar with the situation. Some residents have married after travelling to ISIS-controlled areas. Asia Ahmed Mohamed, born in the Spanish exclave city of Ceuta and sister to Yunes, one of the first Spanish sui-

cide bombers in Baghdad, left her parents to marry Mohamed Hamduch. The 28-year-old from Morocco, also known as Kokito, posts pictures of himself on Facebook kneeling next to the severed heads of his victims in Aleppo. “Her parents talk to her through Skype, and she tells them that she is fine and not to worry,” says a person who knows the family. ISIS leaders are seeking, unconditionally loyal families who will bow to their stringent goals and rigid lifestyle. “They (ISIS) are raising taxes and murdering religious leaders in the conquered villages,” says a high-ranking official with Spain’s security forces. “The local people fear and occasionally hate them. “These families who come from abroad are dependent on ISIS, and work as a counter-balance to that rejection.” The families who moved from Spain to Syria and Iraq are attracted by the jihadist dream, and also by the money. “There is a reward for people who move there with wives and children,” says Dolores Delgado, the High Court prosecutor in charge of international terrorism. “They get paid up to 20,000 euros if the family have four members. Proportionally, it is a lot more than what they

give women who travel to get married there, which is between 1,2001,400 euros.” Delgado adds: “One of ISIS goals is to settle and consolidate the population. The foreign families are not direct combatants, but they play an essential role. Those who come from abroad are much more loyal and valuable than the locals. They contribute power, status and security.” This displacement of entire families to a newly-conquered territory had not been seen since the Nineties, when Osama Bin Laden created the first Al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan. But ISIS has changed all that. “It is unprecedented,” says one police official. “The idea of living in an Islamic state, the umma [community] - entire families are going.” The 26 jihadists who have returned to Spain - 15 of whom are in prison - and security service confidants, all provide the same picture of what awaits a family who decide to move to Syria or Iraq. “They give them a house and pay them a monthly salary,” says one security expert. “In some cases, the families gain more stability than they might have in the countries where they were residing earlier. The hook works!” Since January 2014, the police have arrested 13 women for participating in jihadist recruitment, or for being recruits themselves. No such arrests had taken place earlier because no women appeared to be involved in ISIS-related activities. “This is a rising trend,” says a police report. The latest suspect, a Spanish woman named Silvia Celestín Carrasco, who converted to Islam, “was in direct contact with and received instructions from” an ISIS member. Counter-terrorism services suspect that “other women with similar backgrounds will step up to fill her shoes” on short order.

Rabbits scoffing their way through Tenerife E V E RYO N E knows what rabbits like to do, given half a chance, and it seems their activities are starting to cause problems here.

The proliferation of rabbits seriously threatens the ecosystems of the Canary Islands, according to specialists at the University of La Laguna (ULL) and the Higher Council for Scientific Research. Their latest report, in association with technicians from the Canary Islands Government and the Cabildos of Tenerife and La Palma, was entitled: “The rabbit in the Canaries. Impact on habitats and management proposals. “ It states that some natural plants, such as the Teide violet, are threatened with extinction by the animal. During a conference this week at the Institute of Canary Studies, researchers noted: “The seriousness involved

the ‘European breed’ of rabbit and its eating habits, which seriously affects the conservation of endemic flora and natural ecosystems of the islands. “We have an urgency to address this problem and must manage a compromise while still ensuring natural values.” “The studies presented at this conference show the critical state of the ecosystems of the Canary Islands, with irreversible losses and reductions of between 8% and 54% of their potential area. “Over 50% of the endemic flora of the Canary Islands is threat-

ened.” Antonio Machado Carrillo, one of the most prestigious biologists in the country, told the conference “This land has a problem involving the proliferation of these animals. We have measured at an average density of 2-3 animals per hectare, well above the target of one per hectare that is sought in other regions of the world where the rabbit, when too invasive, caused havoc to vegetation.” And Machado believes there is, indeed, cause for alarm, saying: “As always, when a herbivore brought to the Islands, the larger it is, the worse it is.”

Celiac sufferers can’t get the right diet in hospital CANARIAN hospitals catering for patients who suffer from Coeliac disease, or Celiac as it’s known here, are not doing a good job.

Rice, yoghurt and, fresh fish are essential for suffers and adequate food is essential to avoid risks and serious health complications. But patients and the Celiac Association of Santa Cruz (Acet) have this week reported that neither cafeteria at the two main Tenerife hospitals has adapted to specific products for celiac menus.

“People with this problem who eat there have to talk to the waiters and managers to see if they can make something, and sometimes they cannot help.” says Acet. “Once the person has been identified as celiac, he or she asks for special food care, and these facilities are not doing what they should.” But the prob-

lem goes beyond the hospitals’ cafeterias since they have also found

similar situations with the food given to those celiac patients already admitted. As a result, celiac disease experts in the medical staff, and those w h o need a glu-

ten-free diet, have held several meetings and conducted nutritionist training in the Canarias University Hospital (HUC), hoping to agree on a basic menu for these patients. This included Candelaria hospital, but Acet said it just held an informal communication about the problem, and celiac sufferers were not experiencing a

change. “We’ve had some complaints, but we have no ability to monitor or make facility visits.” said the Celiac Association of Santa Cruz. Acet has had several meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Health and the Canary Health Service, but the problems remain unresolved. “There is not even a census, or a specific record of celiac patients in the Canary Islands”, stresses the association, which regularly gives workshops and training courses on celiac disease and gluten-free diet in health centres in the province.

Police variety will supply added safety for tourists THROUGHOUT the summer months, officers of the Spanish Guardia Civil will be working alongside those of the French Gendarmerie, the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie, the Portuguese Guardia Nacional Republicana, the German police force and the Italian Carabinieri.

These joint security services for the public will be provided in Andalusia, the Region of Valencia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and Galicia. The mixed international patrols form part of the Safe Tourism Plan, implemented

by the State Secretariat of Security, under which the Guardia Civil will endeavour to co-ordinate joint security services with the police forces of those countries home to the largest number of tourists visiting Spain during the summer. The deployment of these mixed patrols, in the most popular areas among tourists coming from these countries, is not only aimed at increasing security but also fostering international co-operation in the fight against crossborder criminal activity. The services will focus on the busiest areas in terms of tourist activ-

ity, especially beaches, hotels and urbanisations. Similarly, and as part of the same Safe Tourism Plan, six Spanish Guardia Civil officers will be deployed in France and Italy this summer. In Italy, three Spanish officers will work with the national Carabinieri in Venice, Amalfi and Sorrento for two months. In France, two Guardia Civil officers are already working with, and supporting, the French police during the Tour de France. Another Spanish officer will be sent to Château de Chambord, between Tours, and Orleans for the month of August. Spain is a major tourism

Sleep well at these prices

THE average price for an overnight stay in Spain this month is 118 euros, and Puerto de la Cruz is the cheapest spot at 68 euros, according to a Trivago study.

Of the cheaper destinations, it is followed by Puerto Rico, Gran

Canaria, and Zarautz, Basque Country (79 euros) plus Sanxenxo, Galicia and Torre del Mar in Malaga (82). Also in this bracket are Suances, Cantabria (84 euros); Barbate, Cádiz (85); Sanlucar de Barameda, Cádiz (87); Llanes, Asturias (90) and Ribadeo, Galicia (94). By contrast, the study highlights Santa Eulalia in Ibiza, as the most

expensive hotel this month, with an average of 340 euros per night. It is followed by another Ibizan resort, Platja d’en Bossa (303 euros); Playa de Muro, Mallorca (251); Marbella, Malaga (244); Estepona, also Málaga (215); La Manga, Murcia (189 euros); Cala Millor, Balearics (189); Costa Adeje, Tenerife (185); Rota (177) and Altea, Alicante (174).

destination, with close to 53 million tourists visiting the country every year, which elevates it to one of the leading destinations anywhere in the world. The tourism sector is the largest part of the Spanish economy in terms of revenue, accounting for around 11% of GDP. The significant importance of promoting and defending the well-being and security of citizens in this sector means it is of

strategic national interest for Spain. Spain is one of the safest countries in the European Union, with a crime rate far below the EU average. This is undoubtedly an important factor, with direct repercussions on the strong competitiveness of the Spanish tourism sector. Every effort should be made to maintain the country’s position in this regard. The direct effect of security on tourism,, and

the strategic importance of the tourism industry for Spain, have led to this sector receiving special treatment in terms of designing and implementing specific measures to combat crime. On a temporary basis, and focused on those areas most popular among tourists during the summer, specific measures are implemented every year with a view to enhancing police activity and, thus, increasing citizen security.

No time for dozing

DESPÎTE what I hear from time to time I always think there is plenty to do in Tenerife. Off the top of my head I could name 50 excursions, trips and nights out.

That’s certainly far more than Droitwich. Of course, millions of people don’t pay thousands of pounds to go to Droitwich, but I don’t get the moans that the entertainment larder is sparse. Apart from all the fine showbars, nightspots and karaoke venues, there is lots to do at night. It’s the same in the daytime, and you don’t have to blow the budget in an afternoon. Take this week for example. Tomorrow (Saturday), there are two amazing events in Las Americas. I’ve written about the Queen tribute God Save The Queen before,

and I cannot wait to enjoy them in the open-air at Magma. Meanwhile, every boy will be badgering his father to go to see the FMX show at the football stadium. In fact, just turn to Page 36 for some great ideas. I’m going to flip the coin on the Dorada tour or the winery visit. Sound of Musicals is on Monday to Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s the show I’ve heard so many great things about: Illusion Live! Big-scale magic and illusion? Yes please. Throw in how cheap it is to play golf on our fine courses, some great fishing out at sea and so many lovely restaurants to enjoy for lazy lunches, and you can see why I don’t get the “I’m bored and there is nothing to do” theory. If you get bored in Tenerife, you must have had one hell of a 24/7 365 life so far. There is so much to do here. If only I had next week off to enjoy it!

By Roscoe IF you lived or holidayed in Tenerife in the Nineties or the early years of the new Millennium, chances are you would have come across Frank Forster, or Frankie Cole, as he was affectionately known. Either in his popular Planet Football bar in San Eugenio, or probably in Linekers during some England match, there was always that beaming smile. He was a “face”, but Frank was different. As straight as a die, with no enemies, he was a man you could go to for some sound, no-nonsense advice. And he was happy to help. Always keeping an eye on the youngsters and the rookie workers who would always “know it all”, Frank had a well-deserved reputation for being fair and, well, frank! From humble beginnings in Bexleyheath, Kent, via a number of foster homes, it’s safe to say he had a tough

upbringing. Still a pup, he pitched up in his adopted home in Liverpool and from there, his lifelong love for Everton was born. He settled in the Army and served 27 years. Frank did five tours of Northern Ireland and loved his time in Germany. After the service he found his way here, where he quickly found a groove. Many longterm residents will remember his years at Soul Train in Starco, before he took the plunge and set up his own bar, Planet Football. Even after relocating to the UK in 2005, Frank was regularly holidaying in Tenerife. When I saw Frankie a few months ago, he was in great form and high spirits. We spent a few hours reminiscing about the good old days and argued like brothers over football. He knew that the “a*** cancer” had him, but he still hoped for another year, saying:

“I’m gonna renew my season ticket.” This was swiftly followed by another dig at the mighty Wolves, and a full-on rant as to how Martinez was not gonna do anything at Everton. We talked about our friend Toby who died in a horrific car crash a few years ago and the wonderful couple of years I worked for him at Planet Football “Do you know how much f***ing money you cost me by drink-

ing all my cider? You supped more than we bloody sold.” And, of course, Euro 96 - one of the happiest periods of both our lives. I left, as I always did, a little wiser and a fair bit tipsier. In my heart I knew I wouldn’t see him again, but his passing this week at the age of 62 (sorry!) still hit me hard. Conrad Frank Forster, Tenerife legend, brilliant bloke and my mate.

Goodbye our darling Dena (1959-2015) GRIEVING parents Norman and Lee Sims have said a heartwrenching farewell to their beloved daughter Dena, who has lost her brave battle against cancer. Norman and Lee, who own and run the Tenerife Markets, are joined in sympathy by all the markets traders in the South, who knew her as a colourful character with her own stall. Dena started the stall selling her famous “Doggy” bandanas and matching sun-hats for dogs, using her own pet, Kizzy, to model them. Norman said: “Entire markets are mourning the loss of such a sunshine lady, loved by

all. We hope she is now flying with the Angels. Their gain, our loss! Dena was cremated

in the North, and the moving service was packed to capacity by family, friends and ad-

mirers. Norman added: “Her Fab Four sons came over to join us, all wearing her favourite Pink. Her sons, plus her two stepsons, who are all over 6ft tall, wore matching pink T-shirts and white cutoffs.” Eyes filled up as her favourite songs, Killing Me Softly and Ain’t no Sunshine When she’s Gone, were played. Her husband Adrian and her big brother, Gary, joined Norman, Lee and the rest of the family to say their final farewells. “The entire Sunday market miss Dena and her sunny, happy smile,” said Norman. “May her sweet soul Rest In Peace. Our Beautiful Girl.”

Health training for ladies of the night! PROSTITUTES are being encouraged to train as health workers through a new grants scheme in Santa Cruz.

Medical charity MDM has started a project featuring 11 training programmes in the capital, with a budget of 5,000 euros for each one. The initiative, spanning a 12-month period, aims to improve the quality of life for women in such situations, offering them training and monitoring. Mayor Jose Bermudez said: “This type of aid contributes a muchneeded boost, with initiatives and programmes that can really help.” The projects comprise five-month courses aimed at helping those women affected by the physical and mental

disabilities of their unemployed state. The FEAPS Canaries organisation is another beneficiary of the state grants. This is a project aimed at women with intellectual disabilities, while AFTER (transvestites, transgenders and transsexuals) will also receive municipal support to encourage employability of the group they represent. The complete list of grants, with sums ranging between 3,40-5,000 euros, include help for lesbian awareness plus prevention and attention to sexual violence against women. It also features newtechnology training for unemployed women, funding for the physically disabled, help for the association of single mothers, together with the parish of Santa Maria de Añaza’s Women Entrepreneurs (MAE) initiative.

Frenchman gored to death AN unnamed Frenchman was killed by a bull during festivities in Pedreguer, a town on Spain’s east coast.

The 44-year-old, at the festival with some friends, was gored by the bull at around 1am on Tuesday, “causing serious injuries”. Doctors were unable to prevent him from dying almost immediately, said Pedreguer town hall in a statement. Local authorities cancelled the remaining events, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. Pedreguer is a small town situated on the

Mediterranean coast in the province of Alicante, in south-eastern Spain. And, during its annual festival, bulls charge through the streets, chasing locals and tourists. Following the tragedy, local authorities reminded people taking part in such events to “do so responsibly and in accordance with safety standards”. Many bull-running festivals take place each summer in Spain, the most famous of which is Sanfermines in Pamplona, in Navarre, which ended on Tuesday. Ten people were gored during it this year, but the last death caused by a bull there occurred in 2009.

Whale of a time for the Thalidamide Congress THE second World Congress of People Affected by Thalidomide, held in Los Cristianos, proved to be an outstanding success.

The event, at Mary y Sol Hotel, was attended by more than 200 people, including thalidamide suffers and their carers from various countries, including the US, Latin America, UK, Ireland, mainland Spain and Italy. It was organised by Udo Herterich and his wife, Claudia SchmidtHerterich, from Germany’s Association of Contergan victims (BCG) - the drug was first marketed in West Germany in the late Fifties under the name Contergan. The couple decided to stage the event here after a holiday last October on the Island, where they met Gary Ord, Tenerife’s events’ organiser for the international congress. The visitors were based at the Mar y Sol, which is the only hotel in Europe able to cater for all the needs of thalidamide victims. Claudia commended its facilities, the staff and the location, which, she described as a perfect setting for the

group to congregate, relax and enjoy Tenerife. “We had a great time, like a family,” she said. “Our guests were able to experience a host of events thanks to Gary. He had a difficult task in arranging everything with the various companies to cater for such a large group of Thalidamide people.” The Whale & Dolphin Shogun boat at Puerto Colon coped comfortably with the 13 wheelchair users, and Claudia said: “We were treated excellently by the crew. They seemed surprised

at the strength and ability of our guests, who decided to swim in Masca Bay. “And big-game fishing out of Los Cristianos was another delightful trip for some of our group, who all managed to catch some fish.” Main event of the week was an invitation to a typical Canarian Evening at El Almacigo Cultural Centre, in Adeje’s Taucho hillside. Zebenzui Chinea Linares, Adeje Youth and Fiesta Councillor, said: “I have had the honour of sharing this evening

with 200 people affected by thalidomide, including Bianca Vogal, Paralympic champion. And I am delighted they liked our town.” The group enjoyed local music and dance groups, as well as an excellent banquet. Udo and Claudia said: “It was the highlight of our week, the people from the El Almacigo and Taucho making us so welcome and treating everybody like normal individuals.” They added: “We would like to say a big thank-you to Hotel Mar y Sol, Gary, all the Shogun crew and MyvideoI Productions, who have recorded this World Meeting, and everybody else who has helped to make our trip a success.”

Catholics preach: Stay clear of mixed beaches A BODY of Catholics in northern Spain, called the Carlist group, are causing controversy by calling for beaches to be segregated by sex.

The campaign image, posted to the Pedro Menéndez de Avilés group Facebook page, encourages sun-seekers to keep away from mixed beaches this summer to avoid “sins of the flesh”. The Carlist group is based in the Asturias

region, about three hours from Bilbao. Below the image is a list of recommendations that “good Catholics” should follow during the summer season. It includes extracts from the Norms of Christian Decency, a set of rules published by Spanish bishops in 1958. Among the recommendations is one to “avoid mixed bathing” because it promotes potential for sin and scandal. A Carlist group spokesman told The Local newspaper that

“the scenes you see on mixed beaches are often close to sin”. Carlism, as a political philosophy, first emerged in the 1830s and sees ultra-orthodox Catholicism as the cornerstone of the state. It was a significant force in the country until the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. “The nudity of the bodies and the prevailing hedonism can weaken the devout soul,” the spokesperson told The Local, adding: “You don’t see this kind of exhibition-

ism in the mountainous areas.” Also on the group’s Facebook page is advice on what people should wear to preserve their modesty. A “simple bathing suit” will suffice for men, though women are advised their swimming costume should “cover their body” and include “a little skirt” for any time spent out of the water. And if there are no segregated swimming options close by, the group simply recommends that the best option is “to not go to the beach”.

San Andre... a dam good show THE San Andrés dam construction is not only continuing at a good pace but is actually ahead of schedule.

This week, the builders dropped the first of 6,200 concrete blocks, each weighing seven tons, which will form the breakwater. The Port Authority is said to be delighted with the progress - and once the dam is completed, work will start to form a mini-beach area. Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez

said: “This project is going very well and already we are forming a small beach. “This area will in the future be a hub of leisure and other bathing activates once the San Andrés project is open. When it is finished, we can ask whether we want a small beach or if we want to make it a sunbathing area. “Either way, we will have accessibility for whatever we want to do.” Jose Rafael Diaz, Director of the Port Authority, said: “That dam will allow a different future for this part of the

coast and will protect, once and for all, San Andrés. “I must say that when the work was awarded in September, we never stopped working, and we advanced forming concrete blocks so that everything was ready when the time came.” Rafael Diaz added “This new dam will allow us to protect the area from possible attacks from the sea or storms. And we are talking of seven-ton concrete blocks! These are state-ofthe-art in their specific design, and they are going to protect the inner structure of the dam.”

Beach rock-fall, but sunbathers are safe

THE long-standing problem of rocks falling on popular beaches has resurfaced this time in the north of the Island.

Earlier this week, a severe rock fall caused the evacuation and temporary closure of Playa de

la Arena beach, in the Tacoronte municipality. The incident took place in late afternoon. as the beach was starting to empty. It is understood that several large stones, some of them several kilos in weight, fell from the hillside next to sunbathers. Fortunately, no one was injured, although one larger rock crushed an umbrella near to

where several people were sitting. The local Tacoronte police, Civil Defence, Guardia Civil and Town Hall workers evacuated the beach and fenced off the area. Specialists will inspect the scene over the next few days and assess the necessary measures needed to ensure the safety in that area, even though the beach has reopened.

Titanic plaque sails to Spain A PLAQUE commemorating the launch of the doomed Titanic liner has resurfaced in Spain after almost a century.

37cm, was a small light that lit up an image of the ship on the outside. It reads: “This, the Latest, Largest and Finest Steamer Afloat.” The plaque had been kept with the shipyard’s president, but he ulti-

mately lost track of it and it went missing for about a century. However, 12 years ago, a British man went to a Barcelona art dealer and tried to sell the plaque - not

Just a day before the RMS Titanic began its fateful voyage from Southampton to New York, on 9th April 1912, the Royal Mail Steamship Union presented the silver-and-bronze plaque to the mayor and leader of the shipyard in which the ship was built. Inside the plaque, weighing 1.8kg and measuring 28cm by

knowing its value - because he “needed the money”. Jesus Ferreiro, President of the Spanish Titanic Foundation, said: “The man brought the plaque to the Barcelona art merchant in a plastic bag and tried to sell it.” The dealer, whose grandson was “a Titanic fanatic”, bought it for him. The grandson recently offered the plaque to the Spanish Titanic Foundation, to be displayed in an exhibition at the Granada Park of Sciences about the famous sea vessel. Ferreiro said the Foundation consulted with experts to confirm the authenticity and history of the plaque.

Mockingbird crusader has lost his shine today ATTICUS Finch, the heroic, crusading lawyer in the classic To Kill A Mockingbird book and subsequent film, is recognised as one of the most revered characters in American literature.

Until now! In author Harper Lee’s new book, Go Set A Watchman, published on Tuesday - some 55 years after Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning portrait of racial injustice in the American South Finch is portrayed as a racist. Astonishingly, it is the first offering from 89-year-old Lee since Mockingbird. And she actually wrote it back

in the day! But its surprising plot has left many of her fans bewildered. Atticus, the smalltown Alabama lawyer, risks his physical safety in the first book to defend a black man charged with raping a white woman. His character was immortalised by Gregory Peck in the 1962 Oscar-winning film of the best-selling novel, read by millions. But in Watchman, Atticus is a bigot who attended a Ku Klux Klan meeting and opposes desegregation. The novel shows his daughter Scout - a six-year-old tomboy in Mockingbird - as a sexually-liberated woman in her twenties, returning home from New York to the fictitious town of Maycomb, Alabama, to visit Atticus. And she is

horrified by the views of her father, now 72 and arthritic. Watchman, set two decades after the initial novel, finds Atticus in possession of a racist tract called The Black Plague. He also scolds his daughter for her progressive equality views. He asks Scout: “Do you want Negroes by the carload in our schools and churches and theatres? Do you want them in our world … the Negroes down here are still in their childhood as a people.” Atticus, scorning federal decrees ending segregation in US schools, adds: “Can you blame the South for resenting being told what to do about its own people, by people who have no idea of its daily problems?” Publisher HarperCollins issued a statement late last Friday, say-

ing: “The question of Atticus’s racism is one of the most important and critical elements in this novel, and it should be considered in the context of the book’s broader, moral themes.” But many Lee’s former followers are nonbelievers. Jamie Harding, an Alabama charity worker, tweeted: “Atticus Finch as a segregationist? It’s like finding out Santa Claus beats his reindeer.” The book is already the most pre-ordered novel on Amazon.com since the 2007 release of JK Rowling’s last book in the Harry Potter series. Lee, now 89 and residing in an assisted-living facility in her Alabama hometown, has refused to promote the novel. At her age, it’s a wonder she can even recall writing it!

Production still rising THE General Industrial Production Index (IPI) in the Canary Islands fell 3.5% in May, compared with the same month last year, as reported by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Nationally, the IPI increased 1.7% in May and this means the industrial production achieved four months of consecutive annual increases.which is a

first since 2006. The encouraging national figures showed an increase in exports of goods and a decline in the import of energy (5%) and consumer durables (-1.2%). By region, the industrial production in May saw Madrid (3%), Andalusia (2%) and Navarra (8%) posting the best figures, while Cantabria (-7%) and the Canarias (-3.5%) suffered.

Tunisia woe is Spain’s gain THE Tunisia tragedy and the financial turmoil of Greece has led to thousands of families turning towards Spain for their summer holidays.

Around 300,000 Britons, who had set their sights on Tunisia, have been looking for alternatives after the British Government advised against travelling there following the deadly terror attack recently. And late bookings to Greece are down because of the country’s debt crisis. Many tourists worry that

they will not be able to withdraw money from cash machines, while hotels and restaurants are feared to be running low on some types of imported food. Some 15 million Britons visited Spain and its islands last year, which was four million more than in 2010. It’s not the first time that Spain and the Canary Islands have cashed in on a crisis. Recently terror attacks and shark attacks in Egypt saw Spain getting a rush of last minute bookings as holidaymakers scrambled for some safe last minute sunshine.

Tax cuts & lower bills! THE Spanish Government has set the budgetary stability targets for the 2016-2018 period, together with the ceiling on non-financial State spending for 2016, which is 4.4% lower.

Blaze kills eight old folk AN overnight blaze in a northern Spain retirement home left eight people dead and 12 hurt - two seriously ill from smoke inhalation.

Local newspaper El Periódico de Aragón said Guardia Civil investigators believed the blaze started on a mattress in a bedroom on a vacant floor of the building, where there

were no residents. It began at around 11.30pm on Saturday, in the private residential home in the town of Santa Fe de Zaragoza, Aragon declared a day of mourning on Monday for the eight victims seven women and a man. The area had suffered a heatwave for more than a week, and a fire between 3rd-7th July saw nearly 14,000 hectares burned in the country’s worst blaze since 2012.

Cops nab mafia kids ITALIAN police have staged one of their biggest raids ever, seizing more than 1.6bn euros in assets from five Sicilian siblings thought to have mafia links.

They are understood to have been helped by the criminal group to secure public construction contracts. Police in the regional capital of Palermo say it is one of the largest

raids they have ever carried out. Analysts say Sicily’s Cosa Nostra and other mafia groups have expanded their activities during Italy’s recession. Among the assets seized are bank accounts, property and furniture. The five - three brothers and two sisters - are all in their sixties or seventies. They worked as labourers in the early Eighties, and went on to become billionaires, according to Italian media.

It has also approved bringing forward the tax reduction and other measures to reduce electricity bills. The Council of Ministers has taken the first step in drawing up the General State Budget for 2016 by presenting the so-called “ceiling on spending” and the macroeconomic chart (economic forecasting chart). Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, Government Vice-President, said: “Both elements set the framework in which these public accounts will be implemented, in an economic situation of growth and expansion, as acknowledged in various international reports.” According to the International Monetary Fund, she said, the Spanish economy “heads up growth this year from among developed economies” with a rate of GDP growth that is “by some margin” double the average in the Eurozone. The Vice-President stressed: “This growth is allowing us to speed up job creation, which has been the specific and essential goal of this Government right from day one, and is reflected in the fact that Spain is the developed nation that will create the most jobs this year and next year, according to the OECD. “We have corrected the imbalances because we have implemented farreaching reforms, and now it falls to the Government to pay back Spanish society for the efforts made during the toughest times of the crisis.” Luis de Guindos, Minister for Economic Af-

fairs and Competition, said the progress made has led the government to update its macroeconomic projections for this year and the next. They were originally posted in the Stability Programme approved at the end of April and, subsequently, submitted to Brussels. The forecast growth in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will rise from 2.9% to 3.3% for this year - with a more positive contribution from the foreign trade sector - and from 2.9% to 3% for 2016. Luis de Guindos pointed out that the economy has enjoyed growth in the first half-year at a rate of close on 4%, which means, he said: “We continue to be, as is habitual, prudent, cautious and fairly conservative from the point of view of our projections.” As for progress in job creation in terms of the Labour Force Survey (EPA), the minister pointed out that 602,000 jobs will be created in 2015 and that the total number of new jobs between this year and last year will exceed one million. He also underlined that in the fourth quarter of 2015, there will be more people in work and fewer people unemployed than in the same period of 2011. The unemployment rate, he added, will also improve: it will stand at 21.1% of the working population at the end of 2015, which will be 1.5% below that posted at the start of the legislature. The Council of Ministers approved an agreement setting out the budgetary stability and debt targets for the years 2016-2018 and the ceiling on non-financial debt in the State Budget for next year.

Cristóbal Montoro, Minister for the Treasury and the Public Administration Services, said that for the public administration services as a whole, a maximum deficit is set at 4.2% of the Gross Domestic Product for 2015; 2.8% for 2016; 1.4% for 2017 and 0.3% for 2018, thus practically arriving at budgetary balance. The deficit of central government will progressively fall to hit 0.2% of GDP in 2018. Regional governments will also achieve budgetary balance by this date, continuing with the policy of fiscal consolidation. The social security system will also reduce its deficit to stand at 0.1% by 2018. Montoro clarified that central government and the regional governments have made “similar efforts” in terms of readjusting the public deficit. In terms of the public debt targets, the minister said the public administration as a whole will close this year at 98.9% of GDP, at 98.5% in 2016, which will then fall to 96.5% in 2017 and 93.2% in 2018. Montoro stressed that the government’s budgetary policies seek economic growth and job creation. “If we had employed another budgetary policy, we would not be growing in this way, or creating jobs at this rate,” he said. “That is why the government, as announced by the Prime Minister, has no

intention of changing the direction or the content of its main economic policies, including budgetary policy.” Turning to pensions, the Treasury Minister said that a deficit had been incurred deliberately. “We have increased pensions, in addition to a growth in the population, because we see this to be social cohesion,” he added. He pointed out that tax revenue will grow by 4% in 2016 to stand at 193.52 billion euros, and nontax revenue by 3%. Total revenue, after assigning 7.9% to regional governments, will stand at 133.77 billion euros, 0.8% higher than in 2015. The limit on non-financial State spending for 2016 will amount to 123.39 billion euros - 4.4% less than the Budget for 2015. This lower figure corresponds to the reduction in the burden for servicing debt, and a reduction in the contribution to the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), as a result of the unemployment drop. Montoro said the budget was marked by a criteria of austerity with the aim of reducing the public deficit but “does not in any way imply cuts”. He added that the aim was to avoid spending increases because it would prejudice the economic recovery and hinder us from heading up growth in the developed world.

UK car sales boom in June NEW car registrations notched a record high in June, growing 7% in the first half of this year to a mighty tally of 1.376,889 motors.

The figure, released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), shows that it narrowly beats the previous high of 1,376,565, recorded in the six months between January and June 2004. Low interest rates, attractive finance deals offered by car manufacturers and a demand for newer models with the latest technology, were all cited as reasons for the increase. June marked the 40th consecutive month of growth for new-car sales, with a boost of 12.9% to mark 257,817 vehicles sold. The data also showed that, increasingly, British buyers were choosing British-built models. Around one in six customers (14%) opted for a car manufactured in Britain in that period, which was the highest

recorded level in five years. Another trend was firmly centred on alternatively-fuelled vehicles, with sales of electric and hybrid vehicles rising 71% in June from the same month last year, via both fleet registrations and private sales. Ford Fiesta is the topselling car model so far this year, with the Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Focus in second and third. British models Nissan Qashqai and Mini were also among the overall top-10 sellers. Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “It is still a great time to buy a new car in the UK, and it is encouraging to see more consumers choosing British models. “This is important for the wider economy, with 799,000 people now employed across the UK automotive sector, including retail.” But Mr Hawes added that the rise was not expected to continue in the coming months. “We anticipate a flatter second half of the year as the market finds its natural running rate,” he said.

Lying MEP fiddled some £½m expenses ASHLEY Mote, a former MEP from the UKIP party, has been jailed for five years after fraudulently claiming the staggering sum of nearly £500,000 in expenses.

Mr Justice Stuart Smith said the 79-yearold had “lied, protested, lied and lied again” during his trial at Southwark Crown Court. Mote submitted bogus claims for his parliamentary allowance, and used the money to fund his court battles in the UK, having been prosecuted for a previous benefits fraud. The Crown Court judge said: “Your greed and dishonesty were matched only by your hypocrisy because,

while this was going on, you carried out a high-profile campaign condemning corruption and the improper use of public money in the very institution from which you were leeching it. “You knew perfectly

well what the rules were for the claiming of expenses. And you also knew perfectly well that what you were doing had nothing to do with funding whistle-blowers and everything to do with funding your bridg-

ing loan, your mortgage and your legal expenses that were unrelated to your role as an MEP. “Along the way, you deceived people who shared your declared political ideals and even considered you to be something of a political hero. “You are, as was said by the trial judge when you were convicted of substantial benefits fraud in 2007, a thoroughly dishonest man. The consistency of your dishonesty is breathtaking.” Mote was convicted at a trial of four counts of obtaining a money transfer by deception, three of false accounting, two of fraud, and one each of acquiring criminal property, concealing criminal property and theft. The offences took place between 2004 and 2010.

Barrymore is seeking damages from police ESSEX Police will not comment on a report that Michael Barrymore is suing them after being arrested eight years ago over the death of a man in his swimming pool in 2001. The former TV entertainer is said to be seeking damages for harm to his reputation and his career after being

detained on suspicion of murder and sexual assault in 2007. He and two other men were later released without charge. An Essex Police spokesman said: “We cannot comment because of ongoing civil litigation.” Stuart Lubbock, 31, was found dead at Barrymore’s house in Roydon, Essex, in March 2001. Cocaine, alcohol and ecstasy were found in his bloodstream. A 2002 inquest heard

that Mr Lubbock had severe internal injuries, suggesting he may have been sexually assaulted. The inquest recorded an open verdict. In 2002, ITV failed to renew the entertainer’s £2million-a-year contract. He moved to New Zealand, filed for bankruptcy after a £1millionplus tax demand - and later tried to resurrect his career in Britain by appearing in Celebrity Big Brother in 2006. Since then he has large-

ly disappeared from TV, turning up a few times on obscure shows, before featuring in a onehour long Jeremy Kyle Show special on ITV in June 2014, when he insisted he had been “clean” of alcohol and drugs for three years. He was working in a garden centre and doing odd-job building work near his Essex home. Mr Lubbock’s father Terry, who campaigned for years for justice, is in poor health and living in a care home. The 70-year-old confirmed that Essex Police had informed him that Barrymore had issued a High Court writ against them. “I am totally disgusted by this and I can’t believe the audacity of Barrymore, said Mr Lubbock. “Perhaps one good thing will be if someone feels the same way I do and comes forward with new information about my son Stuart’s death. I will never give up fighting for justice for my son.”

MORE COMMUNITY ISSUES

your article concerning Community Fees. I think people need to be told of the corrupt manner in which a lot of communities are being run, and the difficulties people have to change the procedure. “I, along with a large number of other own-

ers, have been fighting for over three years with our Community. “Owners believe it is their right to see the accounts, but the Community don’t want to show them to you. And there is nothing you can do, apart from engage a lawyer and t a k e

the matter to court. “That would be very expensive and does not guarantee you will be able to see them. Spanish Law allows Communities to produce accounts, which are not clear. “For example, our Community’s bank account does not show that each apartment has paid every month.” B.W. Sometimes is quite difficult to change matters in our Community, especially in cases i n

which a few people (an owner-appointed Committee), control the “life” of the complex. To avoid this, the Spanish Law system has fixed a mixed-vote system by which agreements must be approved by the majority of the owners representing the majority of quota on the building. The majorities change, depending on the cases (for example, the unanimity of owners is needed to modify statutes) although in most of the cases, the single majority is required. In previous columns, I have referred to the possibility of challenging the agreements at a General Meeting. It is formally required to challenge, to record your dissenting vote (salvar el voto); send certified letters to the Community’s Administrator, stating your concerns after the Meeting; take the Community to Court to object to the agreements (you need a lawyer and procura-

dor) in order to obtain a judgement that nullify them (only a Court resolution can revoke them). As I said in previous Canarian Weekly columns, the agreements can be objected: a) when such decisions are in breach of Law or Community Statutes;b) when they are seriously detrimental to the interests of the community and benefit one or several owners; c) when they are seriously detrimental to one owner, who has no legal obligation to stand such detriment, or when they have been adopted in abuse of power. The deadline to start legal actions depends on the matter, but the most important one is the three-month deadline. Only owners up-to-date with their community fees may object to community resolutions before Court. E-ciggy chargers to blame for fires THE dangers of fires caused by exploding e-cigarette chargers has sparked a national alert after more than 100 fires were blamed on the devices over the past two years.

The Local Government Association (LGA), representing the 49 fireand-rescue authorities in England and Wales, wants e-ciggy manufacturers to display warnings on packaging. Fire chiefs say many blazes are caused by the wrong chargers being used. If a charger incompatible to the device is used, too much current goes into the batteries, which means they can over-

heat and eventually explode. More than two million people across the UK are estimated to use ecigarettes, which deliver vaporised liquid nicotine but do not contain tobacco and do not produce smoke. But the LGA maintains that many e-ciggy smokers use incompatible or cheap chargers and says it’s just not worth risking their lives to save a few pounds by buying dangerous chargers. Councillor Jeremy Hilton, chairman of the LGA’s fire services management committee, said users should be “vigilant at all times”. He added: “We are warning them that it is simply not worth risking their lives to save a few pounds by buying dodgy, dangerous or incompatible chargers.”

Emergency services received eight call-outs to fires related to ecigarettes in 2012, according to data from 43 of the 49 fire authorities. That number rose to over 40 in 2013, and there were more than

60 in 2014. Recent cases include: *A man who died after a charging e-cigarette apparently exploded in Merseyside, igniting oxygen equipment he was using. A coroner later said the explosion was

likely to have contributed to his death *A Leicester woman who said her e-cigarette and car charger adaptor exploded while it was recharging *A block of flats being evacuated in Poole be-

cause of a fire, thought to have been caused by the charging of an e-cigarette But many related fires go unreported, according to the LGA. How to charge your-cigarette safely *Always use the correct charger and follow the manufacturer’s instructions *Never charge a battery that has been damaged, dropped or struck *Never plug a charger into a non-approved mains power transformer *Check your battery has overcharge or overheat protection *Don’t overcharge. Remove the battery from charge when complete *Never leave a charging battery unattended *Don’t use if wet *Do not overtighten the atomiser when connecting it to the charger

of Blacktower Financial Management (International) Limited.

FOR those of us who still have a financial interest in the UK, whether investments, pensions or property - or all three, George Osborne presented his first Summer budget on Wednesday last week.

And within the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s budget, there is something all you expats ought to know! The UK tax system has always supported landlords over and above ordinary home-owners, whether at home or abroad. Landlords, when calculating the

17th July - 23rd July 2015

Summer Budget... how it will affect our expats tax they pay on their rental income, can deduct costs they incur. A large portion of those costs are interest payments on the mortgage. Mortgage Interest Relief was withdrawn from home-owners 15 years ago. However, landlords still receive the relief. The ability to deduct these costs puts investing in a rental property at an advantage. Tax relief for finance costs is particularly beneficial for wealthier landlords with larger incomes, because every £1 of finance cost they incur, allows them to pay 40p or 45p less tax. Bank of England has also noted in its recent Financial Stability Report that the rapid growth of buy-to-let mortgages could pose a risk to the UK’s financial stability. The Government will restrict the relief on finance costs

that landlords of residential property can get to the basic rate of income tax. The restriction will be phased in over four years, starting from April 2017. This will reduce the distorting effect the tax treatment of property has on investment, and means individual landlords won’t be treated differently, based on the rate of income tax they pay. The Government will also reform how landlords of residential property can account for the costs they incur in improving and maintaining rental property. Currently, landlords of furnished properties can deduct 10% of their rent from their profit to a c -

count for wear and tear, irrespective of their expenditure. This means landlords can reduce their tax liability, even when they have not improved the property. But from next April, the Government will replace this allowance with a new system that enables all landlords of residential property to deduct only the costs they actually incur, thereby (for some), increasing tax liability. From April 2017, anybody who has been resident in the UK for more than 15 of the past 20 tax years will be deemed UK-domiciled for tax purposes. Furthermore, it will no longer be possible for a n y -

one born in the UK to parents who are UK domiciled to claim nondomicile status if they leave, but then return and take up residency in the UK. These changes will bring an end to the permanent non-domicile status. In layman´s terms, this means the estates of expats´ (including property, pensions and investments) could be taxed. From April 2017, the Government will also introduce new rules so that everybody who owns residential property cannot avoid paying tax. These changes will limit abuses of the rules by people with non-domicile status, who use complicated structures to make their UK homes exempt from Inheritance Tax. So, if you do have any residential properties the UK, are thinking of purchasing, or have any financial interest

whatsoever in the UK, then please seek expert advice to ensure you are aware of the full implications as a result of this budget. The above does not constitute advice; you must seek clarification from your tax adviser regarding your personal tax situation. First Night of the Proms BBC2, 20.00

BBC Music launches the world’s greatest classical music festival from the Royal Albert Hall. Katie Derham and Tom Service introduce William Walton’s choral classic Belshazzar’s Feast and Mozart’s glorious Piano Concerto No.20 with soloist Lars Vogt. To mark the 150th anniversaries of two great Nordic composers, the programme also features Sibelius’s own exotic retelling of the Belshazzar story and Nielsen’s sparkling overture, Maskarade. There’s also the world premiere of Dadaville by British composer Gary Carpenter. Sakari Oramo conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, with the BBC National Chorus of Wales, the BBC Singers and bassbaritone soloist Christopher Maltman.

World Super Bantamweight boxing ITV1, 21.45

Frampton v Gonzalez Jr Top-level boxing returns to ITV with Carl Frampton’s IBF World Super Bantamweight title defence against Alejandro Gonzalez Jr from El Paso, Texas. Introduced by Mark Pougatch, this fight is the first in America for Frampton, 28, who won his belt in September 2014 by defeating Kiko Martinez by unanimous decision, and went on to retain it with a fifth-round stoppage of Chris Avalos in Belfast in February, live on ITV. The undefeated Ulsterman boasts a 20-0 win record. Gonzalez Jr, with a record of 25 wins, two draws and one defeat is viewed as one of the brightest up -and- coming boxers in Mexico. The 22-year-old from Tijuana will aim to follow in the footsteps of his world champion father Alejandro Gonzalez Sr when he challenges for the title at the Don Haskins Centre.

Joanna Lumley’s TransSiberian Adventure

17th July - 23rd July 2015

S u nda y

ITV1, 21.00

The series sees Joanna travel from East to West, departing from Hong Kong across 5777 miles of both Asia and Europe, through seven time zones, taking in an immense panorama of vistas and cultures, people and places, before her final arrival in Moscow. Everything about this legendary journey is of epic proportions. It cuts across three distinct countries, cultures, landscapes and languages and crosses some of the worlds most geographically challenging, yet resource rich and scenically splendid regions. Joanna will be hopping on and off the train visiting people and places as she travels. By travelling in the opposite direction from most travellers on the Trans-Siberian railway, Joanna can begin her journey in Hong Kong, where she spent her childhood. At the end of her journey at Moscow’s Central Station, Joanna will revisit the location of a photo-shoot she did while modelling in the 1960s. The journey links the two biggest bastions of communist power over the last century, China and Russia, two super powers at a crucial point of radical change in their histories. Sandwiched between these two colossal countries lies Mongolia, whose previous powerful Empire used to control its two current neighbours. The immense proportions of the trip present Joanna with the opportunity to lend her natural curiosity to a richly diverse range of territories and bring viewers an insight into their peoples, languages, landscapes, politics, customs, histories and modern day societies. In episode two, Joanna is in Mongolia and spends time with some Mongolian nomads, visits a giant statue of Genghis Khan and a gold mine. She spends time in the capital Ulan Bator where she tracks down the amazing Mongolian throat singers before catching the train to Putin’s Russia. She meets Mongolian tradesmen on the train before crossing the border into Siberia.

Surprise Surprise ITV1, 20.00 Surprise Surprise returns for a fourth series hosted by Holly Willoughby, who will be rewarding some of the country’s most deserving people with spectacular surprises. On tonight’s show, The Vamps surprise a young carer who has gone above and beyond helping her mother with her younger brother and sister and helping other children in need. Kay Price, 40 from Leigh-On-Sea is nominating her eldest daughter Laura Price, 15 for her incredible volunteering efforts within her community and her unconditional help at home. Since the age of three, when her twin siblings Lucy and Alex were born with Joubert’s syndrome, Laura has adopted a handson approach to helping her single mother with almost everything from getting them dressed, to cooking meals and assisting with the bedtime routine; all of which can be extremely challenging at times as the rare genetic disorder affects the cerebellum, an area of the brain that controls balance and coordination. Laura has not only offered her help at home, but has also devoted lots of time in supporting research projects for the disease to help and prevent struggle for other families. Caring for others is a natural instinct for Laura, and she even volunteers at a local respite group (Toy Library) and Mencap centres for young people with disabilities. She assists on outings, runs activities and her role often includes being a one-toone carer. Recently, Laura has joined a young carers’ group, helping with other children in a similar situation, giving talks and sharing advice to raise awareness.

Britain At The Bookies: Survival Of The Fittest

17th July - 23rd July 2015

M o nda y

BBC1, 21.00

Over the last ten years, the betting industry has boomed. The big betting companies have opened shops in ever more prominent positions, sometimes right next to each other. Online, we’ve become the biggest punters in Europe. From the lottery to the race course, having a flutter has never been more popular, and it’s the bookies who are making a killing. For the first time, one of the big high street brands, Coral, is letting us in to the extraordinary world of betting, showing us how they draw the punters in, set the odds and try and get the edge over their customers. They’re selling us the thrill of a win, with an endless range of betting products available around the clock, 365 days of the year. From horse racing, to controversial fixed odds betting terminals, to reality TV results, if you want a price on a bet, then Coral’s traders will give you the odds. But not everyone sees betting as just another high street product and the industry’s critics are more galvanised and vocal than ever. Gambling addiction can wreak havoc on punters’ lives and those around them. Public concern about the dangers of Britain’s gambling revolution has forced the industry to start looking at itself, but are their attempts to self-regulate too little, too late? On Huddersfield High Street, there’s a turf war playing out. Eleven betting shops are crowded into the town centre, and it’s the big chains that have taken the prime positions. As the long-serving manager of one of the town’s oldest shops, the Kirkgate branch of Coral, Tony knows he has a fight on his hands. Tony runs his shop like a social club, and his tight-knit staff and host of regulars make it one of the company’s most successful shops in the North East. Now Tony has got to use all his skills to turn around the fortunes of another branch which is less than 70 meters away - Cherrytree. The shop has a reputation for disruptive and often violent customers and is failing to hit its profit targets. In the battle of the high street, Tony needs to ensure both Coral branches survive and beat the opposition. Tony can sell bets on everything from traditional dog races, to the name of the Royal baby and the winner of reality TV shows. At the trading floor at Coral’s East London HQ, Gary is working out the odds for the new series of Strictly Come Dancing. The public’s love affair with Judy Murray causes Gary some major headaches as his favourable odds look like they could lead to a big payout. Also at HQ, the marketing team devise a scheme designed to entice people into opening online accounts. For a five pound stake punters stand to win 25 pounds if a top premiership team win a corner at home. It’s effectively a £250,000 giveaway but if it results in 10,000 new customers in the fiercely fought over new online market it could be a gamble worth taking. Back in Huddersfield, Stuart isn’t loyal to a particular betting brand. A self-confessed ‘compulsive gambler’, he trawls all the shops in town, trying his luck on the fixed odds betting terminals. It’s left him with nothing, and we see the consequences of his addiction and his life on benefits. Manager Tony has to balance the problems that customers like Stuart have with his need to drum up trade in his shops. He doesn’t gamble himself but doesn’t see any problems with that: “I am sure there are lots of vegetarians who are butchers” he says. By the end of the film, will Tony’s methods have saved Cherrytree? Will any of the bookies in Huddersfield be forced to close? And how will Stuart deal with his addiction, which could leave him penniless, without enough food to last him until his next benefit payment?

Cake Bakers and Trouble Makers BBC2, 21:00 Lucy Worsley’s 100 Years of the WI. Documentary to mark the WI’s centenary. Lucy Worsley goes beyond the stereotypes of jam and Jerusalem to reveal the surprisingly radical side of this Great British institution. Beginning on the Welsh island of Anglesey, where the WI’s first meeting was held in a garden shed in 1915, Lucy discovers that its humble origins were no bar to the movement’s grand ambitions. Lucy explores some of the WI’s most important campaigns, like its 1918 crusade for decent housing and the fight for equal pay in 1943. Lucy uncovers the crucial role the WI played on the home front during both world wars and recreates a wartime jam factory. Lucy also discovers that membership began to decline as the institute struggled to cope with the social revolution of the 1960s. To find out how the WI reinvented itself for the 21st century, she meets some of the members who stripped naked for a charity calendar in 2000. She also joins a protest alongside the Shoreditch Sisters.

Hair BBC2, 22:00

Hosted by Katherine Ryan, ten hair enthusiasts hope they’ve got what it takes to win the title of Britain’s best amateur hairstylist. The eight remaining amateurs are back in the salon under the watchful eye of judges Alain Pichon and Denise McAdam. The theme is history of the world, and the creations on offer include a volcano, a Grecian goddess, two geishas and Native American braids. 58-yearold retired teacher Lesley and 21-year-old Meggan’s hairstyles feature curls but will their curls put the judges into a spin or fall flat? The four stylists who fail to impress will find themselves in the Eliminator - a quick fire round which this week focuses on cornrows. Cornrowing is notoriously difficult to achieve, and with just 40 minutes to braid their models entire head, this is the stylists toughest challenge to date.

Virgin Atlantic: Up in the Air ITV1, 21.00

Virgin Atlantic: Up in the Air is a new documentary series which goes behind the scenes of the colourful airline, in its turbulent 30th year in business. With full and exclusive access, the series follows staff at all different levels of the business, from Richard Branson and the Chief Exec to new cabin crew recruits and the boys in the warehouse, as the company rolls out a new plane, new uniforms and new people – and tries to get back in the black. Richard Branson, who founded Virgin Atlantic when he was just 34, is still the face of the airline and we meet him in Florida as he shoots a range of adverts for the brand. It’s a chance for Meigan, the airline’s new Director of Communications, to meet her boss for the first time, and a surprise lies in store for her. As Virgin Atlantic turns 30 the company is thinking ahead to its future. But how will an airline based on youthful exuberance cope with middle age? Reuben is Head of Customer Experience, responsible for and everything to do with how the airline looks and feels. His big job is to oversee the company’s new TV ad campaign, the first in 2 years and he has the tricky job of combining Virgin’s cheeky and sexy past with its maturer years - without being boring. Nailing this idea in a new advert isn’t easy, and the ad shoot in Budapest has its ups and downs. After seven years of waiting, the team at Virgin Atlantic are finally about to get their hands on their new Dreamliner plane. Designer Nik and cabin crew trainer Matt Whip are amongst the crew flying the new plane back to the UK. On the flight home Nik discovers that his new lighting has an unfortunate side effect on the crew blouses, while back at Heathrow Chief Exec Craig and his senior team find the welcoming party doesn’t run as smoothly as expected.

Documentary series based at the pioneering London children’s hospital. This episode looks at children whose lungs are failing because of cystic fibrosis and other conditions. In a few very severe cases, their only hope of survival is to undergo a radical and risky step - a double lung transplant. Children then have to live with the uncertainty of waiting for a matching donor lung to become available. As many as 25% die while waiting. 9-year-old Charlie has cystic fibrosis. His condition has started to rapidly deteriorate. Doctors and family need to make a quick decision. Jess was told she should be listed for a lung transplant two years ago, but she was too scared. She made a decision to take a risk and delay the operation but has she left it too late? Chloe is 11 and has already been waiting for new lungs for nearly a year.

Once it has landed the team has only have a few weeks to get the plane ready for going into service. The Dreamliner flies a different altitude to their older planes, which makes food and drink taste different to the discerning passenger, so Reuben has the all important job of selecting the sparkling wine with the right amount of bubbles for the new altitude. Also in the episode we also meet the team at the customer complaints centre in Swansea, who are dealing with customer’s increasingly high expectations - and the occasional caller who thinks Richard Branson might be available for a chat. Back in the warehouse in Crawley, Tom is thinking ahead to his own future, with possible retirement on the horizon. The team on the ground at Heathrow reveal some of the stranger things that customers have tried to bring onto a plane, and a Dreamliner launch in Atlanta keeps Richard Branson and the Virgin Atlantic team on their toes.

Exposure: NHS Out Of Hours Undercover

17th July - 23rd July 2015

W ednesda

ITV1, 22.40

Exposure goes undercover in a privately-run NHS outof-hours centre and finds doctors not fully trained, targets being manipulated, and patients being asked to assess their own symptoms because the unit is too busy. According to the last GP-patient survey, almost half the public have no idea how to contact out-of-hours services, and last year the Royal College of General Practitioners said doctors were being undermined by ‘a chaotic and underfunded system’. Covert footage filmed at a centre run by the UK’s biggest private provider of out-of-hours care shows chronic understaffing and medicine cabinets empty of vital drugs. Staff say recent changes aimed at hitting financial targets have affected the service they provide to patients. And experts who view the footage with reporter Mark Austin give a damning assessment of what they see, saying the practices on show could pose a risk to patients’ health. Prof Susan Mason, one of the country’s top experts in emergency care, says: “I would have concerns that patient care is not at the heart of what they’re doing... I don’t think this is really in line with the true values of the NHS.” Dr Peter Holden, the British Medical Association’s special advisor on urgent and unscheduled care, says: “I have to say, if I worked a shift in this [unit], it would only be a single shift and I’d be blowing whistles… I’d be telling them what I thought.” The producer-director of this programme is Richard Butchins, and the executive producer is David Henshaw, for Hardcash.

Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners BBC2, 21.00 Historian David Olusoga continues his examination of Britain’s forgotten slave owners. In this episode, David explores how in 1834 the government arrived at the extraordinary decision to compensate the slave owners with the equivalent of £17bn in today’s money. Tracing the bitter propaganda war waged between the pro-slavery lobby and the abolitionists, he reveals that paying-off the slave owners for the loss of their human property was, ultimately, the only way to bring the system to an end. Meticulously kept records held at the National Archives detail the names of the 46,000 slave owners from across the British empire who had a slice of this vast hand-out. Combined with new research, shared exclusively with the BBC by University College London, it reveals more about Britain’s slave owners than we’ve ever known before. Of the 46,000 names in the 1834 compensation records, 3,000 lived in Britain, yet they owned 50 percent of the slaves across the empire and pocketed half of the compensation money. These include members of the clergy and at least 37 members of the House of Lords. The records also show that at the point of abolition, more than 40 percent of all the slave owners were women. David goes on to investigate what happened to the wealth generated by the slave system and compensation pay out. He reveals aspects of Britain’s spectacular industrialisation in the 19th century, the expansion of the railway network, the consolidation of the City of London as a world centre of finance, and a number of the country’s most well-known institutions that all have links to slave-derived wealth. Ultimately, David discovers that the country’s debt to slavery is far greater than previously thought, shaping everything from the nation’s property landscape to its ideas about race. A legacy that can still be felt today.

Britain can be a stressful place - and we all lose our cool at some point. Now more than ever, our moments of madness are being caught on camera. From body-cams worn by front line professionals, to smartphones and CCTV, millions of mini-eyewitnesses are recording our explosive episodes. In this programme, we hear from ordinary consumers pushed over the brink by familiar frustrations. We follow workers on the receiving end of public abuse - traffic wardens, bouncers and bin men - and show footage they’ve filmed themselves, along with shocking CCTV and videos from passers-by and witnesses. We uncover the stories behind the clips by talking to those who filmed the anger - and those who dished it out - to discover what caused reasonable people to boil over. From shocking instances of aggro and abuse, to the all-too-familiar frustrations of delays, queues and call centres, this prograame examines the stresses of modern life, and reveals the triggers that set us off, and send us over the edge. By Jamie Droo AT least one entertainer is reviewed on this page most weeks and, in the main, those featured have been treading the boards here for years. But there are still so many yet to get a review; those who deserve credit for their talent and the work they do around the entertainment venues. I reckon there around 500 venues in the main areas of the south offering entertainment in some form every night. Whether that be the DJs of Veronicas and Starco, a singer in a res-

THE UNSUNG championS taurant, a tribute artiste, musician, comedy act, drag show, production show or host, there are so many acts out there every night who have chosen this as their profession. However, some have not taken the path of a full-time professional, yet they are always available to step up when required to do the job when the regular act is indisposed. There could be a number of reasons which prevents them from working, usually through ill-

WHAT’S NEW

This week, I caught up with a new show which has just started here. I say new show, but Julie Miller has been entertaining here for years as a popular compere, and she will continue to do so, alongside her new project.

Julie has decided, after many years of being asked by members of her audience and her friends here, to put a tribute show together and perform as one of her own favourite singers, Pink. Coupled with her compering experience as a host and her looks, this will, hopefully, be a recipe for more success. I caught some 25 minutes of the show on Wednesday and she has put plenty of effort into getting her tracks processed properly. She has a costume show and Julie is a very active entertainer, who gets among her audience to ensure she engages everyone. Good luck on the circuit this summer, Julie.

ness or some unforeseen emergency. But as this is an industry comprising predominantly self-employed people, it is sometimes difficult to find a replacement at short notice. But when a cabaret artiste has to cancel through unforeseen circumstances, it is usually not too difficult to find a replacement act - it’s really dependent on the time-slot required. Full-time artistes will probably not be available to cover an 11pm start because, 99% of the time, they will have a regular gig somewhere as there are more 11pm spots in the venues than any other time. There are not many venues still offering more than one show a night, and most opt for 10pm or 11pm starts. Then there are those venues like St Eugens, in San Eugenio, and Restaurant Margarita, in Los Cristianos, which do feature more. For instance, Restaurant Margarita’s Eddie presents three shows a night and has built up a stable of entertainers he uses regularly and never cancels. That earns him the loyalty of his acts, and plenty to choose from when it comes to replacing somebody at short notice. There are venues that don’t have that option and cannot replace an act so easily, especially when it comes to finding a compere at short notice. Comperes are much harder to find in an emergency. In one particular case, Jamie Daley, from the North East of England, has always been there to step up to the mark when required. His main role is that of barman in Springers bar on the El Mirador strip and, though some may think that being a Tenerife barman has nothing to do with entertainment, I beg to differ. I have said this before: to entertain is to hold a person or person’s attention for a set period of time. If that is the banter of a cheeky barman, or the

ability to hold the attention of people by testing their thought process, it all becomes relative to entertainment if the people are hooked in to what is happening. Jamie has that ability. He has also worked in Tenerife for many years and has been very observant of other entertainers. He has picked up on the dynamics of being a stage entertainer and, quite a few times now, he has taken to the stage hosted karaoke. The extremely popular barman is fast-gaining experience as an up-andcoming compere. The best hosts on this Island are the least self-indulgent, which sums up Jamie. He gets on with the job in hand without feeling the need to prove himself. This is very endearing and, because most of his audience know him from working behind the bar. with his cheeky style when serving drinks, he has half the battle won because they are already on his side. His popularity is growing and, because regular host Eddie Marzella also lacks self-indulgence, he sets a fine example for Jamie to follow. One day, in the not-toodistant future, I am sure he will take a more active role compering, if the right opportunity arises.

The Waterfall, Golf del Sur

This gem really sparkles THE Waterfall restaurant and bar is much, much more than the name suggests. Many residents and savvy tourists have already found this gem of a place, already renowned for its Sunday roast and live entertainment.

But that is just the beginning. The Golf del Sur restaurant (on Las Adelfas 2), is owned and run by the Reid family, who have been on the Island for 10 years. Jenny (Jefe), Kelvin, Emily and Jamie (her husband-to-be), are the heart of this well-run, happy establishment. Chefs Jamie, Simon

and Anne Marie, have over 50 years in the kitchen between them - and a wealth of experience in Tenerife – while our servers Emily and Kelvin were also handson, making the seating arrangements to keep everyone happy.

When we arrived we opted for a table for two on the extensive terrace and then had the hard task of choosing from the vast selections on offer. A few really caught the eye including the combos for two - king prawns, garlic

mushrooms in a creamy, white wine sauce, and various salads. But in the end I went for the tempura cod goujons with homemade tartare sauce and a salad garnish. The cod

was perfect and the tempura batter was so light and crispy. But the show-stopper was the tartare sauce: creamy, tart and oh-so-moreish. The wife loves her cheese, so the deepfried camembert with mixed fruit jam was right up her alley. A creamy centre and a crispy outer is all you need from this dish, and the chefs got it spot-on. As it was Friday, my wife ordered the chefs’ special: freshlybattered Atlantic cod with “proper” chips. My eyes were drawn to the steak ‘n’ ribs, again with “proper” chips, BBQ sauce and home-made coleslaw.

Once again the food was how we expected with the ribs and fish in particular a stand-out offering. It’s the little things that make a meal like this and the extra effort to provide things homemade, such as the coleslaw. It’s the way forward. The restaurant is open daily from 11am, offering a full tapas menu, pizzas from 1pm, plus full English breakfasts. Also in the modern day a fine gluten-free menu is also available. The Waterfall also has a popular Thursdaynight, two-course meal deal, with entertainment from dusk. Bookings are essential for Thursdays and Sundays. HAIR

Jaw-dropping thrills galore By Vanessa Vee

By Carl from Robot

HAVING friends over on holiday means lots of activities in order to entertain, and this week they wanted to sample the Siam Park experience.

WHEN your time is limited and every second counts in your daily routine, there’s absolutely no excuse to say you don’t have time to make your hair look good.

This is not a place I tend to frequent, as much as I love it, because the height restrictions for the rides mean that a lot of activities are out of bounds for my rather young children. Having purchased our tickets beforehand meant that we avoided the hustle and bustle of the gate queues and walked straight through to the turnstiles, enjoying a hassle-free entry. After passing the Sea Lion island, we made our way to the sandy beach and decided this would be our station for the day. Free sun beds and parasols are an absolute bonus! The ambience of this theme park is glorious, with mellow music played throughout the day, and dozens of people soaking up the sun, and literally having a joyous time. The park is immaculately kept, and constant maintenance is upheld throughout the day. Our first port of call is the wave palace, which boasts the largest artificial waves in the world, reaching up to three metres high, and you can jump right into them, or opt for paddling in the edges near the vast white sands. Every half an hour, you can spot everyone heading in, ready to enjoy the thrill. For my young children, the Lost City is perfect. Uncover the secrets of this water fortress by crossing bridges, dodging waterfalls and sliding around. And joined on to this is a baby section, specially designed with youngsters in mind. For relaxation the lazy river, known as the Mai Thai River, is a must. Grab a single or a double inflatable doughnut

and glide along the waters for a good 15 minutes. We collared a double and managed to get all four of us on board, with each child on our knees. There is a section which has a bit of a thrill to it, however, which is not permitted with young children. My friend’s seven-yearold son was desperate to attempt the Tower of Power but, alas, he did not make the height limit. This ride is Siam Park´s most iconic feature, and also its most jaw-dropping thrill ride. Climb the tower, take a deep breath and hang on to your swimwear as you plunge down the almost-vertical 28-metre freefall and emerge via a mysterious aquarium. Next we head to the Volcano and The Dragon, again, amazing, thrilling rides, but not for those of nervous disposition! For these rides a quadruple inflatable is used, so you can all grasp the experience together. Today (Friday) sees the grand launch of yet another exclusive ride. Siam Park presents “Singha”, part rollercoaster, part water ride, and is said to be the first of its kind in Europe. It

looks as if it going to be an incredible experience. The Kinnaree, which uses the tag line “where fiction becomes reality”, is yet another whiteknuckle ride, along with The Giant and the Mekong Rapids. The Sawasadee is a family area of flumes and has a lower height restriction; however I would say from maybe eight years and over. The Siam Park is a wonderful day out, but if you have young children, some activities are very restricted. Thumbs-up to the cleanliness of the whole park and also the wonderful lifeguards, who are extremely vigilant and helpful. Fast-track passes can be purchased to skip the queues, and you can also purchase another day-pass for just 17 euros if you fancy a second visit. Open 365 days a year, visit www.siampark.net or visit any local excursion office or hotel reception.

If that is the last thing on your mind as you prepare in the morning, maybe it’s time to invest in an EXPRESS CUT. Yes, a cut that isn’t rushed in the salon but one that saves you time in the morning, and when going out, yet still looks fabulous … with very little effort. Forget ironing and blow-drying your hair for hours because these cuts will take minutes to create, and will look stunning all day long. It’s all in the cut and, as I always say, the cut is the most important part of any styling process. If your colour is amazing and the style suits you, but the cut just isn’t there, the basis of your look just isn’t going to do you justice. So where do you start when wanting an Express Cut? First of all, it’s down to the stylist to show you the best look for you after giving you a thorough consultation about what you want and what hair she or he has to work with. Don’t expect miracles, but do expect that if it is cut correctly, your

EXPRESS

cut will do all the work for you when it comes to styling your hair. This works for short, medium and longer lengths of hair. But don’t just think that quick means short! When styling, the most you will need to do is a quick shake of a dryer, or a quick runover with a hair iron. But not both! You’re

talking a maximum five to 10 minutes to give you amazing hair. If it is cut right and your stylist has shown you just how easy it is, you should be able to recreate this at home. I’m not saying that this look suits all hair types or all face shapes, so you must consult your stylists and listen to their invaluable advice about how you can achieve this easy-towear look. Keep your colour simple, too, because fussy, over-colouring doesn’t work well with this style. Above all, work with what you have and never force hair to do what it isn’t made to do. And then, you could also have fuss-free hair!

By Monica Dyson LISTENING to the radio in Sheffield the other week, I had a little chuckle when comedian Billy Pearce spoke of his early days in showbiz, and the time he was a Butlins redcoat.

He said that his main role was ensuring that people didn’t escape and so had to finish their holiday. But I’m sure he was joking because, actually, it was never quite as bad as that! The thing was that in the Fifties, we so looked forward all year for our holiday-camp experience, which was usually in “shut-down weeks”, when South Yorkshire steel works closed down for two glorious weeks. Of course, we enjoyed six weeks of school holidays, but our fathers’ allocation was just two weeks, so the feeling of relief for them must have been immense. Sadly, one thing our children and grandchildren may probably never know is the joy of a holiday camp.

17th July - 23rd July 2015

Where dad had the best knobbly knees

In our part of the world, the camp in question was Butlins at Skegness in Lincolnshire, affectionately called Skeggie. This was opened by Billy Butlin in 1936, although it wasn’t until the Fifties that the British public really took this kind of holiday to heart. It was the golden age of the holiday camp, as most people hadn’t been away for years, certainly not during wartime, and I don’t believe our fathers had thought of their trips overseas in the forces as much of a holiday! People wanted to forget about depression and rationing and enjoy clean, stylish and modern accommodation and dining, which was forerunner to today’s all-inclusive resorts with which we are familiar. The camps were minitowns, completely selfsufficient, and there was no need whatsoever to visit the resort outside. Prices were quite reasonable and there was plenty to do all day, every day … whatever the weather. The food was probably pretty dire by today’s standards, but we had three

meals a day, served in two sittings, of plain, wholesome food. You did get the odd meal of chicken which, after the war, was still a bit of a luxury. But generally, it seemed quite good to what was an unsophisticated and undiscerning clientèle. Chalets were set out in regimented rows with cold-running water, supplemented with communal showers and toilet blocks. Children were as excited to be there as if it were today’s Disneyworld. On arrival, you were given your “house”, which was called something like York or Windsor House and your own house Redcoat, who encouraged you to win points in the competitions. The dining halls were divided into house sections, which were coloured accordingly, even down to the tablecloths. And from these

sections, you would catcall and make rude gestures which, in those days, were such things as sticking your tongue out! A weekly Campers’ Committee dealt with suggestions or complaints, but I’m not sure if they were also an escape group! Yet you were so proud of your dad if he were picked to be a committee member! At some unearthly hour of the morning, wake-up music would come over the loudspeakers. And at the end of the day, it was: “Goodnight campers, see you in the morning!” Every minute was funpacked with contests galore: knobbly knees, beauty, bonny baby, glamorous grannies, best head of hair, talent, football, snooker, rollerskating, darts. The pool was always full as well, and there were rides, films, boat-

ing, mini-railways, games and live shows each evening. Times have really changed from those days, when children experienced total freedom. They could literally spend all day away from their parents and not meet up until meal times. Babies were put to bed while their parents went for a drink or to a show. Redcoats patrolled the chalet areas and if a baby was heard crying, a message would come over the tannoy or flashed on to the cinema screen: ‘Baby crying in chalet number whatever. So, not a problem to leave children alone at night in the chalets then. By the Sixties, Butlins had become more upmarket with Beachcomber Hawaiian -themed bars with staff wearing grass skirts to be followed by Crazy Horse Saloons and Pig

and Whistle pubs. And the chalets had bathrooms with showers and hot-running water! These holiday camps became the mecca for young people, who had yet to discover Magaluf and saw Butlins as a means of meeting the opposite sex. But the baby patrols were eventually joined by custodians of moral behaviour, on the lookout for any hanky-panky, and so things were relatively innocent! Eventually, sophistication took over, expectations altered and package holidays abroad became affordable, although it seems that the Butlins name is still alive and well at Skegness, even to this day. But the camp bears little resemblance to the days my generation remembers so nostalgically, when the sun always shone. And Dad won the knobbly knees contest!

Flying high to a new

MANY of our refuge dogs are sent to Germany for re-homing, and especially the bigger ones as there is a better chance of finding them new homes there.

Marion, who runs Accion, is always looking for people travelling to Germany with Condor, Air Berlin or Tui Fly, who would like to help the dogs. All it costs is a little bit of your time at the airport while Accion staff check the dogs in, and the reservation will be made and paid for by the charity. You will be met at the other end by staff from our German charity sponsors AktionTier, who will then transport the dogs to their new home. If you are travelling to Germany and would

like to help, please call the refuge on 922 778 630. Keep a cool head Do remember in these high summer temperatures to keep your pets safe by ensuring they have plenty of shade, cool water. We understand it’s a tough ask in this weather, but a frozen, cool-box ice-block in their water container will help keep it cool for longer - and/or add a handful of ice cubes to keep the heat away a little longer. Also, avoid walking your dogs on the hot pavements to avoid damaging their paws. Above all, avoid leaving your pets in a hot car because, even with the windows open and in a shady area, the dogs can overheat in no time. Please call 922 778 630, from 8am-5pm, for more information about adoptions, or if you would like to help out in any way.

Maybe you have some spare time and would like to walk one or two our many dogs, which would be much appreciated by our inmates. We are always in need of blankets, towels, dog leads, collars and pup-

py milk, if you have any to spare. Opening hours We are open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays,Thursdays and Fridays between 2-5pm, and on Saturdays from 1-4pm.

Wigan Pier lays on Daisy fund-raiser REMEMBER Mini, the cute, cream-coloured dog featured in last week’s Dog of the Week? Sadly, her daughter, Daisy, was knocked down last Thursday. The driver failed to stop and she was dragged 40 metres down the road, suffering devastating injuries to her front legs and large friction burns to her neck and back. Generous people, following events on social media, have been donating to Daisy’s ongoing care, and the Wigan Pier bar has offered to host a benefit event to add to the pot. Please give your support next Saturday (25th July) from 1pm. It will be hosted by Suzy q and Derrick Lynes, and features Paul Monroe, Steve Delsey, Tommy Latino, Cara as Blondie,

Mick’s Mum mission A HOMELESS man from Birmingham, who became a Big Issue vendor five years ago to regain his respectability, has discovered his long-lost mother Christine - living in Tenerife.

It has been a long, bewildering journey for 53-year-old Mick Dillon, who last saw his mum 27 years ago, and travelled to the Island last month with his brother and sister for a joyous reunion after nearly a year of planning. But as he stressed: “This wasn’t a holiday - it was a pilgrimage. I now feel at peace, knowing that I’ve now got a family. I’m part of a family now, which I haven’t been for 52 years. “This was a massive gathering of family I never knew I had. There was so much love and so many tears - tears of joy that brought us back together. “We have all made a pact that we’ll never be torn apart again. We decided we are going to aim for meeting up on the same date next year, maybe even for Christmas if we can.” Mick, now with a clear mind and answers to all those nagging questions he has asked himself throughout decades, owes his good fortune to The Big Is-

sue Foundation, which supports vendors’ with employment and housing advice, moneymanagement and access to healthcare. It also helped Mick get a passport so that he could be reunited with his mum. And during the past year, he also found stable accommodation, and began saving for the big trip through his Big Issue earnings. Mick grew up in chil-

dren’s homes and with foster families, as did his brother and sister. And although he had a career in the building industry, he lost his job when the recession hit in 2008 and soon found himself homeless. Five years ago he was sleeping rough under a canal bridge in Birmingham. “I’d hit the lowest point of my life,” he recalled. “I felt degraded and I wanted to get my identity back.

“Two friends died that year because they were very vulnerable. I thought to myself, ‘enough is enough’. I had to get back on track. I felt degraded and I wanted to get my identity back. “I wanted to be Mick rather than miserable, so I came to The Big Issue and met the staff, who have helped me with the problems through thick and thin. He now has a comfortable home and is a popular figure in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, where he sells The Big Issue magazine for a living. “It’s a massive part of my life,” he said. “I absolutely love it here. I have built up my own family. Everybody knows my name and I recognise a lot of faces. “Some people come to me with their problems, but one girl came up to me and told me she wished each other good luck in the future. It is one of the perks of the job to have this network of support.” Tom Belte, The Big Issue’s Area Services Manager for the Midlands and Oxfordshire, said: “Vendors like Mick, and their stories, are the most important part of our job. “It is incredible what can be achieved by them, with the right mindset and the right help. There are definitely better things ahead for Mick, he can now keep moving forward, and start the next chapters of his life.”

Lifestyle

By Val Sainsbury WHEN you take a commonly-prescribed drug for a physical condition such as high cholesterol, asthma or acne, or even the Pill for birth control, you may be alert for signs of physical side-effects. But such medicines can harbour much more than that: they may make you aggressive, violently jealous or even suicidal. This little-understood threat was highlighted this month by the authoritative science journal PLOS ONE. Its researchers found that taking statins to lower cholesterol and prevent heart problems can make some women aggressive and violent. Some seven million Britons a day take statins, and the NHS warns that side-effects can include headaches, nausea and pain in muscles and joints. But in a study of 1,000 people, researchers at the University of California also found a link between statins and aggression, particularly in post-menopausal women over 45. Curiously, the women most likely to become aggressive were normally more placid than By Carl Pattison

WE are right in the middle of the summer heat here and, naturally, we all wear fewer clothes and have more of ourselves on show.

17th July - 23rd July 2015

Beware those hidden side-effects of drugs average. Among men on statins, however, only three displayed large increases in aggression, says Beatrice Golomb, a Professor of Medicine who led the study. The link between statins and aggression has been known for more than a decade through studies by US and Italian researchers - not mentioned on the NHS Choices webpage on statin side-effects - but they don’t understood why. One theory is that lower levels of cholesterol in the brain may be to blame. Cholesterol enables brain cells to communicate, so behaviour may be affected if it drops. Prof Golomb says statins raise testosterone and cause sleep problems, which could make people prone to irritability and aggression. Her studies uncovered some alarming cases, including that of a 59-yearold man who had never been violent, chasing his wife and saying he was going to kill her. Six weeks after he stopped taking statins, he was his normal, placid self again. A 46-year-old woman who admitted treating her husband “very bad-

ly” for the nine months she was on statins, also regained her composure six weeks after stopping. David Healy, Professor of Psychiatry at Bangor University, is an expert in the field of dangerous side-effects. He cofounded rxisk.org - a website that alerts doctors and patients to the dangers in some common drugs. His study of case reports, submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by doctors and patients, found that with the statin Lipitor, there had been 310 reports of aggression and violence and 62 reports of homicidal behaviour. There were 309 reports of irritability, 256 reports of personality change and 68 of paranoia. With the statin Crestor, the database shows 133 reports of violence or aggression, five of homicidal behaviour, 93 of agitation and 84 of paranoia. The US database is, he says, much bigger and more useful “than anything that exists in the UK”. So why is the danger so little known? “Statins will be checked to see if they lower your cholesterol, but the clinical tri-

als generally do not look properly at whether they are causing behaviour change,” says Prof Healy. “Too often with drugs, we don’t have access to the data, which is buried in the companies’ trials. Often, companies dismiss reports of psychological side-effects as merely ‘anecdotal’. “They don’t let the average doctor know about this, and doctors don’t tend to report a change in behaviour, unless it is drastic.” Statins are not the only drug linked to strange behavioural changes. Last week, the Journal of Neuroscience reported that a University College London study showed that dopamine can make people more likely to risk money in high-stakes gambles. Dopamine is used to treat Parkinson’s, which is linked to the death of the brain’s dopamineproducing cells. Other side-effects linked to dopamine include sex addiction and theft. Last month, 58-yearold Andrew Taylor, a respected family solicitor from Cheadle, Greater Manchester, was jailed for four years after swindling £600,000 from el-

derly clients to spend on antiques, prostitutes and sex lines. He began offending soon after starting treatment for Parkinson’s. Some of the common drugs we take daily have more subtle, but still lifethreatening, side-effects. Recent research by Pennsylvania State University found that women taking the Pill were more jealous (to the point of violence) towards their partners. The study suggests that a form of oestrogen found in many types of the Pill may affect behavioural patterns. It also warns that hormonal contraceptives may, ironically, ruin relationships. Other drugs with psychiatric side-effects have been known about for years, but remain on the market as popular medications. Professor Healy is critical of British drugs watchdog the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). He says the agency does not adequately share information about potential dangers, claiming: “It is terribly secretive.” Likewise, he says, pharmaceutical companies

must be much more open with the results of their own clinical trials. But Dr Virginia Acha, from the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, insists that any side-effects reported by a participant in a clinical trial, including unfavourable ones, are recorded as part of the trial. A middle view is taken by Professor David Taylor, director of pharmacy and pathology at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. In 2010, he co-authored a report in the British Journal of Hospital Medicine that warned: “The psychiatric side-effects of non-psychiatric drugs are poorly studied, but they can be difficult to spot during research.” Not all such effects are negative, however. Earlier this month, researchers at University College London found that the anti-depressant citalopram may make patients more caring. Professor Healy adds: “Only if we stay completely alert can we uncover psychological sideeffects of drugs that may not be on the manufacturers’ labels.”

NOT SHORT ON STYLE

This year, as far as the guys go, shorts rise to new levels, literally. Out go your three-quarterlength shorts, your cargo shorts and anything below the knee. If you are going to wear them, they have to be, as the

name says, “short”. If you have the legs to wear them, then halfway up the thigh is a great length to be seen with. If your legs are on the bigger side, then then just above the knee will also look great. Don’t have them wide, either, because the look is fitted, especially if you have thinner calves. Wide will only make them look slimmer. Shorts don’t have to be beach attire only because they also look good at work, and even with a shirt or thin sweater in the evening. It all depends on the occasion. But if looking cool and being cool counts, now’s the time to invest in some and take

advantage of this warmer weather. If you’re going out to search for them, try to stay away from patterns. Anything too gaudy will look “jokey”, so look for simple designs. Checks look

great, as does subtle camouflage. Opting for one uniform colour will make them more classic - thus lasting for years. Also, it’s simpler to mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe. Smart shorts also look superb on formal occasions, like an evening

wedding event or special night out -perfect if you want to ditch the jeans and feel cooler. But be careful on the footwear if you try this look because sandals or flip-flops are a big No no. Go instead for a smart loafer or boat shoe, picking out the colour of your outfit in the shoe. Remember that if you’re wearing a belt, it must tie in with your shoes. Don’t have them clashing as this will spoil your look. There are so many combinations to choose from that you a bound to find one to suit your taste. Just don’t forget one thing before you buy, guys: “Try them on”. I know we don’t like to, me included, but it saves the hassle of returning them.

Look after those bones and joints By Nico Gil

of Activate Sports Club

AS we get older, there are two main possible threats to our joint health: osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Many people confuse these two conditions, but they are actually very different.

There are over 100 different kinds of arthritis (and, for some reason, almost every type affects more women than men), but by far the most common and best known are rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, painful, auto-immune disease that causes inflammation of joint tissue and internal organs. It can strike at any age and its causes are unknown. Osteoarthritis, however, is by far the most

common form of arthritis, and while it can affect anyone, it is mainly found among older people. It affects structures throughout the whole joint and eventually the cartilage, which covers the ends of bones in a joint, wears away. This leaves bones rubbing against other bones, which is very painful, as well as altering the shape and flexibility of the joint. The most common body parts to suffer are hands, hips and knees hence so many replacement hip and knee surgeries. Osteoarthritis can be found in younger people - even under 30s - especially as a result of an injury of some sort, and is often linked to sports injuries. Normally, though, it affects the over-40s. Statistics estimate that around 80% of people over 55 have evidence of

osteoarthritis in at least one joint. It can be localised for years to one particular joint, or quickly progress to many parts of the body. The exact causes aren’t known, but genetics, weight, and stress placed on joints from different jobs or hobbies can all play a part. The word osteoporosis literally means “porous bones”. Over time, sometimes years, with no symptoms, this disease thins and weakens bones, which makes them more likely to fracture or break. Osteoporosis also affects more

women than men (there are almost four times more cases) but here’s some good news: it is both preventable and treatable. The greatest risk period for developing osteoporosis is for women after menopause: older women lose bone mass, and the decline in oestrogen after the menopause doesn’t help at all (oestrogen plays an important role in helping to prevent bone loss). But trust me when I say that it is never too late to learn some vital tips that will help you to maintain strong and healthy bones. A bit about bones To say bones are important is an understatement. Apart from protecting your internal organs and providing structure and support to your muscles, they also store 99% of the calcium your body uses for a long list of functions.

Healthy bones are strong and dense, compared with porous, weak bones affected by osteoporosis. Bones change throughout your life through a process whereby the body breaks down old bone and replaces it with new, stronger bone. Until the age of 30, the body is constantly making more new bone than it breaks down. And around that age, your bones become the strongest they will ever be. After this, your body breaks down old bone faster than it builds new bone. The rate of bone loss varies hugely from one person to the next, but bone loss of any kind is bad news. What you can do Some foods have been proven to fight inflammation, including garlic, onions, ginger, avocado, turmeric and pineapple. Olive oil and coconut oil

are also great for pain, inflammation and to aid healing. Apples contain quercetin, which helps to build collagen, while green, leafy vegetables such as watercress, spinach and kale are fabulous for calcium (and iron). There also some things you should avoid, or reduce in your diet. Red meat, dairy, caffeine and sugar are just a few examples of things proven to cause inflammation and joint pain. Weight-bearing exercise is also key to keeping your bones strong. This can be walking because it doesn’t have to mean high-impact activity. Working with weights also helps maintain a healthy bone mass, but yoga, Pilates or other activities that are based on supporting your own body weight are perfect alternatives to lifting weights at the gym.

A return to Soria

By Roscoe THE fixture computer has been rather kind to CD Tenerife, who face a favourable start to the new season.

They concluded the last campaign with an entertaining 3-3 draw at Numancia and, unbelievably, that is where they will commence this season on 23rd August! The trip to Soria is followed by matches against three of the promoted sides. The run starts with the first home game of the season against Nastic, who are captained by former Tenerife skipper Manolo Martinez. A trip to Huesca follows seven days later, before Real Oviedo pitch up in Santa Cruz. A trip to Llagostera, just outside Barcelona, follows on 20th September before a home match with Mi-

randes and then a visit to Almeria, the first big team in the division. They came down from La Liga last season and will be busting a gut to get straight back up. Traditionally, Tenerife start slowly, but they cannot afford to this time. They have a tough set of fixtures in October and then a horror run in the weeks before Christmas. Progress has been painfully slow on the

transfer front. Tenerife have been linked with about a dozen leftbacks, but they have finally brought in an experienced centre-back. Cadiz-born Germán Sánchez will finally step up into senior football after a career spent exclusively in the third tier. He has joined from Olot, who had a steady if unspectacular season in section 3 of the third tier. They were always in

mid-division, but they didn’t concede many, and this was down to Sanchez, who can also score a few at the other end. He said the move to Tenerife was “very exciting and a dream come true. The Island is a very desirable destination and I cannot wait to play in the second division.” The 29-year-old knows manager Raul Agne from their time in Cadiz, and it does seem to be an Agne signing rather than a recommendation from the director of football, Alfonso Serrano. Agne said: “German is a very committed player and he is a hard worker. We have tried to get him since the last season finished.” He is the fourth and final centre-back at the club. Carlos Ruiz has signed a new deal until the end of 2017 and will be first choice. German will battle with Alberto and 19-year-old Jorge to partner Ruiz. Tenerife are still looking for another four players: a left-back, left-winger, striker and maybe a utility midfielder. To allow for this, Quique Rivero will be allowed the leave. The 23-year-old is keen to stay, but admits he faces strong opposition in central midfield, especially after young Younousse Diop was added from the B team. Young goalkeeper Nauzet has been moved on. He was 4th choice cat behind Dani, Roberto and Carlos Abad.

He has been loaned to Nastic B where he will get some valuable first team experience. He suffered an awful knee injury last season and we wish him well. On Thursday the annual “will he or won’t he” game began again. This was strongly rumoured last July and the July before in fact. But after being told by Osasuna that he is free to leave, Tenerife legend Nino could be on his way back to Santa Cruz! He is good mates with the Chairman and he always said he would return. He needs no introduction and his 78 goals from 159 matches speak for themselves. He was the heartbeat behind the promotion side in 2009. Nino has been at Osasuna for 4 years but it’s been an up and down spell. He missed a full season with a knee injury and various managers have played a style that is not suited to his taste. That wouldn’t happen here. He is 35 and played nearly 600 matches and nobody would expect him to play every minute of every game. Ye he still has plenty to offer. He notched 11 goals last season in a poor Osasuna side and is an out and out poacher. On the training pitch he would have vital experience as well. If the numbers work and Agne has an open mind why not? At least he wants to play for us unlike a few Tenerife born lads it seems.

Trish Throws Three Treble Twenties! WE don’t just have talented darters in this league ... we also have players who make up their own tonguetwisters!

Either way, Trish, or the Welsh wonder as she is affectionately known, fired in her first maximum for Second Division outfit Summerlands, during their match at Spear Chuckers. The rest of the team obviously left their darts at home though, because they lost 7-1. Paul ‘Topgun’ Messent fired in a new league high with a 121 finish for Phoenix Flights who faced Clouseaus, only for team-mate Pod to take that from him

with a 129 a few legs later. The 6-2 result gives the Phoenix team a 15-point cushion at the top. Marilyns went back up to third place with a 6-2 victory over Waterfall B, while Sandy’s trebles leg win for Chippers saw them beat Pas O Nadas B, a feat mirrored by the Mad Hunters for their success at Gaffers Jucee Girls. Elsewhere, Sundowners held their nerve in the final rubber to square the match with Bar Leones. With Bar 180 A off down the beach with their buckets and spades, the teams around them in Division 1 had an opportunity to narrow the gap, or even pass them in to first place. And with Hoppys

facing Phoenix, they might have been hoping for a draw. But not so. Although Hoppys will be cursing a few missed doubles, Phoenix took all the singles’ points and ran out 6-2 winners to take that top spot. Nick hit his first 180 for Emerald Lounge as they were swept aside by Boothen Army, who moved above Bar 180 A and into second place. Boothen Titans, on

a decent run at the moment, put six past Pas O Nadas A, which has them on the same points as Emerald Shamrocks, who also scored six at Palms Pool Bar. Of Waterfall Warriors’s seven matches, six have finished with a 5-3 result, this one going in their favour as they claimed the trebles leg to beat Palms Sports Bar. And another 5-3er came at Exiles Bar, also in favour of the

home team against Gaffers. We take a break from league action this week, as more than 60 players go in to battle in the singles knockout competition. Divisions 1 and 2 and the ladies have their own separate events, which will be played at five venues across the league. These will culminate in our finals night on Friday, 25th September. Good luck to everyone!

Gracias Casillas IKER Casillas, one of the most decorated footballers in Spanish history, has said an emotional farewell his beloved Real Madrid after 25 mostly glorious years.

The emotional goalkeeper, a first-team regular for much of 16 years, with 18 major club trophies to his name, had dreams of finishing his career at the Bernabeu. But it all ended sourly for the 34-year-old in a bleak, official sendoff by Real on Monday ahead of his move to Portuguese side Porto, where he is now installed. The previous day, he sat alone in a tearful press conference and was barely able to read his prepared statement. Only journalists were present to applaud Casillas as he left the room after his announcement. The Spain international, who lifted the World Cup in 2010 and

the European Cup two years later, was initially angry at the manner of his exit. Yet he appeared more content on Monday before his departure, as he was paraded on the Bernabeu pitch alongside the various Real trophies won with Real. Real held the presentation following criticism over the surreal nature of Casillas’s tearful news conference, when he appeared alone in the stadium press room to bid farewell to the club. The club captain, who also skippered Spain for a period, fell out with manager Jose Mourinho. He was dropped in December 2012 and things at the Bernabeu were never quite the same for him again. Casillas joined the Real Madrid youth system at nine. The agile youngster emerged as a star goalkeeper in his teens, helping the Spanish junior national teams to the 1997 UEFA European Under-16 Championship and the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship. He broke into Real

Madrid’s senior side in 1999, and was the youngest starting goalkeeper in a UEFA Champions League final in May 2000. He made his debut for Spain’s senior national team shortly afterwards. In his first four seasons, Casillas helped Real Madrid win two league titles, two Spanish Super Cups and a UEFA Super Cup. He was relegated to substitute during the 2001-02 campaign after a period of erratic play, but responded with several amazing saves late in the 2002 UEFA Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen to secure the win. Casillas became Spain’s No.1 keeper during the 2002 FIFA World Cup, earning acclaim for his performance in helping his side reach the quarter-finals. He was elevated to Spanish team captain after the 2006 FIFA World Cup, enjoying an impressive stretch of individual and team success. And he helped Real Madrid win backto-back league titles in 2007 and 2008, as well as

the 2008 Spanish Supercup. He was soon to be rated the world’s finest goalkeeper, enhancing his reputation by being named in the UEFA Team of the Year for the first of six straight years in 2007. Casillas also helped Spain end its lengthy drought of international success with his airtight defence in the 2008 European Cham-

pionship. Spain went on to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2012 European Championship, with Casillas earning selection to the All-Star teams of all three tournaments. Casillas claimed another league title and Supercup victory with Real Madrid in 2012. But the combination of a fractured finger and that rift with manager

Mourinho kept him on the bench for much of the following season. It was clear his star was fading rapidly, as was his reputation within the club, and he was never the same player again. But at least he has a chance to regain his esteem at Porto, in what will almost certainly be the final chapter of his magnificent career.

Lancashire Lads are back at 3T IT is not unusual to see sporting teams training in Tenerife at this time of year - especially football clubs - and during the season as well.

The first-class facilities at Tenerife Top Training (3T) ensure that sides visit all year round. Pre-season is always a busy time in La Caleta and recently, two League One arch-rivals have been here. There must be something in the water or in the Thwaites because first Rochdale, and now Bury, have been tuning up for next month’s curtain-raiser.

Neither side are strangers to the 3T facilities on offer, and this is Bury’s second successive pre-season stint here. It was the springboard to their promotion success last season.

And if it ain’t broke ... The squad is noticeably stronger this year. Former Wolves striker Leon Clarke, ex-Barnsley winger Jacob Mellis and Huddersfield legend Peter Clarke have

been joined by former England and Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland. Boss David Flitcroft also added dangerous striker Tom Pope to the squad on a free from

Port Vale, and he has a side going places. Rochdale are looking to consolidate after a brilliant season in the third tier of English football, and manager

Keith Hill was delighted with the work his charges did in the Tenerife sunshine. Last season they finished eighth, which was the club’s highest-ever position.
