THE SINGHA’S IN TUNE WITH THE WORLD!

Continued from front. Siam Park, which has just launched a spectacular new water-coaster ride, has been named No.1 Water Park in the World, while stablemate Loro Parque is rated the Top Zoo in Europe and second in the world, thanks to the opinions and comments of travellers. Loro Parque has hit these heights for the second year running, the group’s theme park again considered to be among the best in the world, with recognition by Tripadvisor, the largest travel website of all. And Siam Park is acknowledged as the best Water Park worldwide. These distinctions, an incredible achievement for our Island, were announced in the third year of the Travellers’ Choice Awards, created by TripAdvisor, which accepts the opinions and recommendations of tourists about the best sights and attractions in the world. A total of 533 awards were handed out, and a Top-25 world ranking was established in which attractions and places of interest from all over the globe were taken into account. These included the best theme parks of Asia, Canada, China, Europe, India, South

America, the Pacific and the US. And this year, Siam Park repeated its standing as world No.1, while Loro Parque, considered the third-best zoo in the world in 2014, has gone up one position, and is now considered the second-best zoo behind the historic San Diego centre. Loro Parque and Siam Park have also received individual “Certificates of Excellence” awards, presented only to the attractions which have

achieved excellent ratings by travellers in the past 12 months. Having won these certificates for five consecutive years, they have both been included in the Hall of Fame. And Siam Park is enjoying another celebration in the shape of its latest attraction – the fastest, most spectacular water coaster in the world. It is called Singha, and the pioneering ride is more than 240 metres

long, with 14 changes of direction. Singha consists of a slide with in-line floats for three people, propelled by water that reaches six metres per second going up and 18m a second going down - unprecedented speeds in water parks. It is, say officials, an adrenaline rush never before experienced. And out of respect for its surroundings, Singha has been adapted to blend in with its sur-

roundings, enclosed by the fabulous vegetation which characterises the entire Siam Park theme. It didn’t happen overnight, either. Tons upon tons of earth were shifted, together with many hours of study, effort and dedication by more than 70 specialists, engaged in the design and construction of this unique structure. Singha is named after the lion Rajasi, king of the mythical beasts who, according to the Thai legend, lives in the Himmapan forest and presents itself as a magnificent creature with majestic wings, surrounded by flames. And just as Rajasi displays its mighty power, so too does Singha. Thanks to Canadian engineering by the Proslide company, a powerful water-propulsion system was designed especially for this attraction, which offers unprecedented speed. Siam Park visitors will almost certainly live with the experience, every ride absolutely unique and unprecedented. Everyone taking up the challenge will enjoy sensations previously unknown. This propulsion system includes a belt that transports the floats

back up to the entrance of the attraction. The adventure starts on a float for three people in line, which visits hidden tunnels, curves which are formed by discs of eight metres each (the new flying sources) and, thanks to the original system, vibrating changes of height, rising to six metres per second. Without doubt, Singha will become a phenomenal Siam Park attraction and, surely, the world’s finest as far as water parks go. TripAdvisor, the largest travel website in the world, was founded 15 years ago and operates in over 45 countries and in 28 different languages. Each month, the website is checked by 340 million travellers and shares more than 225 million opinions, which adds up to 139 comments a minute. The Travellers Choice Awards are determined by the quality and quantity of positive comments and opinions expressed by visitors about the attractions experienced wherever they go. And as far as our own magnificent twosome, Siam Park and Loro Parque, are concerned, they really do know what they are talking about!

Our doctors are so over-worked IT is a littleknown fact, but each family doctor in the Canary Islands is responsible for 1,420 people, which is an enormous burden.

Studies of the health personnel have remained almost unchanged in the Canaries in recent years, but each worker has to serve a growing number of patients. This has emerged from data on primary-care centres, broadcast last week by the Canary Institute of Statistics (Istac). It seems an impossible figure, but the population assigned to the health-care system has grown enormously, and has changed its structure. The number of under-40 users has decreased, but it begins to

increase over that age. And because of this ageing process, the number of patients grows for doctors and nurses, but decreases in the case of paediatricians, who, with 887, have the lowest record since 2004, when official statistics started. Although the ratio of family doctors has risen slightly, the same applies to nurses, who bear the greatest burden of primary care staff, with a population of 1,625 per worker. Two years ago it was 1,195 and in 2011 stood at 1,652. An impossible situation! True, it has variations depending on the Island in question. Family physicians of Tenerife and Gran Canaria have assigned a population of 1,460 and 1,428, respectively - higher than the regional average and a lot more that the number of potential patients

in La Gomera, where health professionals enjoy a lighter load because the Island’s population is so much smaller. Instead, La Gomera paediatricians are among those with the highest ratios - 1,030 per worker just b e l o w Fuerteventura (1,090) and Lanz a r o t e (1,067). The

decrease in child population has pushed down the burden of care on all the Islands, except Fuerteventura and El Hierro. Staff templates of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and El Hierro serve about 860 peo-

ple, while La Palma has 751 by paediatrician. In the case of nurses, the mostly western islands are those who have seen their ratios i m -

prove, although slightly. Instead, the potential workload of workers in Tenerife has expanded.

Benefits’ warning for Brits in Spain

Extra-crazy for the Bourne saga

SUR-FILM, the Canarian production company responsible for casting extras in Tenerife for the fifth instalment of the Bourne saga, has attracted more than 2,500 online pre-registrations in three days. Shooting on the film begins in Santa Cruz in September, and about 800 extras, aged from 16 to 75 are required for the Hollywood blockbuster, which again features Matt Damon in the starring role of Jason Bourne. Also needed are experienced motorists, Greeks living in the

Canary Islands, experienced computer operators, boxers, and combat athletes, who must email their details and a photograph to info@casting canarias.com as soon as possible. The selection of extras will take place at the Adan Martin Auditorium in Santa Cruz on Tuesday and Wednesday (28th, 29th July) between 10am-6pm on both days. And the online preregistration is important because candidates will be given set appointments.

BRITONS on benefits who are considering moving to the Canary Islands or mainland Spain should remember to tell the authorities before finalising their plans.

Failure to do so may well result in a criminal offence, warns the Department for Work and Pensions. With the current strength of the pound against the euro, more and more Britons are interested in buying a property abroad, and Spain is one of the most popular destinations of choice. But if you receive a UK benefit, along with packing your sun lotion and forwarding your

mail, telling your benefit office you are moving should be at the top of your “to do” list. Reporting a change in your circumstances, such as moving abroad or buying a property, is your responsibility. And failure to do so leaves you open to committing benefit fraud, even if you do not live in Spain but have property here. One fraudster who failed to report a change in circumstances is Dean Stuart Ahmed, from Cardiff.

After claiming benefits since 1997, he not only purchased luxury properties in Murcia, Spain and South Wales but rented them out to make a profit. Ahmed, presenting himself as a single, disabled person accumulated a large collection of property and assets over 15 years. But in September last year, his fraudulent life came crashing down when he was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison, with his properties and assets seized by authorities. It is an object lesson for Brits and, with large numbers moving to and living in Spain - Tenerife included - the Department for Work and Pensions has a dedicated team there, investigating benefit fraud abroad to make sure UK taxpayers’ money

is not being abused. More than £7 million has so far been recovered from British benefit thieves living in Spain. Much of this success is down to the free hotline, which the public can call anonymously to report suspects. Important details to help the team track down a fraudster include the suspect’s name and address, both in Spain and in the UK. If you know of someone you believe is committing benefit fraud in Tenerife, please call the free, anonymous hotline on 900 554 440. The lines are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm. You will be doing your bit to make sure that benefits - money supplied by taxpayers - actually goes to the people who really need it.

Spain cheered by tourists SPAIN welcomed 29.2 million foreign tourists in the first six months of the year, which was a record in recent times.

Last year proved to be a bumper period, but the latest figures were 2% more than in the same 2014 period, according to the Tourist Border Movements Survey (Frontur), released by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. The UK, Germany and France accounted for 54.8% of the total arrivals, with increases in all three countries. The stand-out country in terms of growth was America, with 15.7% more arrivals in Spain and 2.3% of the total of these, up to 661,612 passengers. The US was followed by Switzerland - 9.7% more and up by 755 950 (2.6 % of the total). However, the Russian tourist arrivals dropped to -35.7%, but still represented up to

360.746 visitors, as well as the Nordic countries (-4.7%), with a total of 2.3m passengers in that period. But on the other hand, British tourists (23% of the total international arrivals) rose by 2.6% to nearly 6.7 million, followed by those from Germany (16.2%). In third place was the French market (15.6%), which rose 7.5% - up to 4.5m foreign tourists. Catalonia, the Canaries and Balearic Islands are the communities accounting for more international arrivals, with 25.5%, 19.3% and 15.1%, respectively. Canary International Travellers achieved 5.6m (4%) and the Balearic Islands, 4.4m foreign visitors (3%).

Norwegian airline to fill the Spanair void

THE airline Norwegian is creating 106,000 new jobs next winter, with new routes between Tenerife (North and South) and Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga.

They will operate from late October to the last weekend in March, with the blessing of the Cabildo, which says it will fill the void created by

Sales building up nicely!

HOME sales in Spain hit their highest level in May for three years, according to official figures. Yet data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) suggests the sale of new-built property is falling. There were 26,455 homes sold in May, up 5% on last year and 11% on the year before that. But a breakdown of figures shows that the increase was from the resale market - up 34% over 12 months - while new-home sales fell 42% to just over 6,000. According to Mark Stucklin, of Spanish Property Insight, the overall picture is one of a recovery in demand for property in all areas where foreigners tend to buy, but with a market problem being the lack of attractive new homes for sale. But this could be about to change. Demand is growing for new homes in Marbella, for example, and developers are building

again. Land is in high demand and, for the first time in almost a decade, residential, commercial and tourism projects are under construction. And the market is increasingly positive, according to Pia Arrieta, partner at DM Properties Knight Frank Marbella. “Genuine interest in good value, good quality, well-located plots of land is on the increase,” she said. “Land prices in Spain climbed 5.2% during the last quarter of 2014 and sales increased significantly, compared with the same period in 2013.” Pia said the strong pound was encouraging UK buyers who are considering a broader range of investments, but northern Europeans, particularly those from Scandinavia, the Benelux nations plus Germany and Russia, are also ranking highly among those choosing to build their dream homes

on the Costa del Sol. “Competitive construction costs and the decline in land prices in recent years has spurred developers on,’ she said. “Marbella’s accessibility, along with continuing investment in the town, such as its new boardwalk and the increasing number of toprated restaurants, are also encouraging new development.” According to Christian de Meillac, Knight Frank’s head of sales in Spain, this upturn in demand has also been replicated in registration figures. “In the first half of 2015, Knight Frank has seen a 65% increase in new applicants registering their interest in Marbella, compared with the same period last year,” he said. “Buyers are seeing value again. Prices have come down, the exchange rate is favourable and they are seeing long-term growth potential.”

the disappearance of the Spanair company. Specifically, Tenerife North will have a daily flight to Madrid from 25th October, and to Barcelona, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from the 26th. That same day a new connection to Malaga will be released, departing from Tenerife South on Mondays and Fridays. What makes the routes

so attractive is the cost: tickets to Madrid, says the airline, will cost from 24 euros each way, and those of Barcelona and Malaga will be from 23.5 euros. Alfons Claver, Norwegian’s Director of Communication and Institutional Relations, is hoping the seats can be maintained throughout the year. He also stressed that in winter - apart from these three connections

- his company can put on flights to Birmingham and Edinburgh. And Mr Claver indicated that the possibility of turning Tenerife into a “hub” with America is still standing, but not until 2017, when his company will have new aircraft. Alberto Bernabe, the Cabildo’s new Tourism Minister, views the Norwegian company as a “good partner” for the Island.

cash gap between living in Spain’s most expensive region, Madrid, and in its cheapest, Extremadura.

It amounts to 43% more, according to a study presented by Jaume García, former head of the National Statistics Institute and now a professor at Catalonia’s Pompeu Fabra University. The study, commissioned by the Catalan regional government, also demonstrates that taking the cost of living into account reduces the income disparities among regions. The Basque Country has the highest GDP per inhabitant (30,051 euros), while Extremadura has the lowest at 15,133 euros - the smallest of all. After taking the cost of living into account, the Basque Country still has the highest per capita income (27,895 euros), but Andalusia moves into last place

on 18,058 euros. The study uses 2012 data to calculate the purchasing power parity (PPP) of Spain’s different regions - a measure which allows the analysis of an economy’s level of production or well-being, cost of living, and poverty, while leaving out such factors as variations in prices. For all the analysis, though, more than 27% of Spain’s population is at risk of poverty or social exclusion The results show that GDP figures per capita are gradually moving towards the Spanish average of 22.297 euros across the regions once PPP is taken into account. But the report points out that the different regions’ rankings does not vary “substantially”. The most significant changes are the rises of the Canaries, which moves from 13th to 10th place, and La Rioja, which goes up from fifth to second, and the drops of Catalonia - down from fourth to seventh place - and Madrid, which falls from second to fifth.

Carnival’s street-wise Gladis NEW Carnival Councillor Gladis de Leon wants to change the Murgas contest - or the final at least!.

That was the state of play in Tuesday’s 2016 Carnival meeting - his first significant meeting with the Santa Cruz Carnival officials. De Leon, in office for just over a month, put a number of proposals about the street musicians to the committee,

hoping to give a twist to the competition in recent years. But much of his proposals fell on deaf ears. They did not like this suggestion of changing the scoring system (eliminating the phase between the middle and the final) and, much less, reducing the number of street murgas to qualify for the final eliminator. But at least they accepted the retention of four preliminary rounds. After several years

of having a final-eight participants, De Leon hinted that the level of murgas in the last contest did not reach the minimum required for one of the most-anticipated events of the Carnival. That is why “Fiestas” launched the possibility of leaving the contest for acting awards to just seven contenders (as in 2007), or even six. The change was not liked by most of those at the meeting, who

advocated maintaining the current formation of eight. What was attractive to the murgas was the proposal to return to the four phases (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday), as in 2014, instead of the traditional three. But the agreement between the two sides lasted just a few minutes because, other than Dee León, they agreed to the scoring system change.

Jewellery scam netted 1.3m euros Merry Marine Park THE Marine Park in Santa Cruz has hit the heights beating the bestvisitor monthly attendance figures ever recorded.

Up to Sunday, it had received a total of 109.313 people in just 19 days of this period, which represented an average of 2,381 people a day - an 29% increase over the same 2014 period. Park Councillor Alfonso Cabello, said:

“These figures state that this facility is already one of the leaders of Santa Cruz in terms of leisure, and also one of the key, basic points of the city in this section.” He added: “These results confirm the commitment and the effort the city has made so that the Marine Park remains open throughout the year and, above all, is able to improve the services and facilities offered to its users.”

SIX people have been arrested in connection with defrauding more than 1.3 million euros from 24 Spanish companies.

The arrests were made in the Gran Canaria towns of Telde and Las Palmas, and Tenerife capital Santa Cruz. The investigation was initiated following a complaint from a jewellers against a group to whom they had handed over a large amount of jewellery and had not been paid. The group were part of a network called the “Nazarene scam”. The

main man accused, who went by the assumed name of “Michael Müller”, appeared to represent a subsidiary of a prestigious German multi-national group. He had such a good story that he was able to win the confidence of at least 24 suppliers. Orders were made for jewellery, mainly via telephone and computer, which were never paid because he cited problems with the socalled parent company in Germany. Immediately afterwards, the group were said to have resold the illegal merchandise to other companies, who had no idea where it had come from.

In many cases, insurance companies became involved, which slowed any legal action against the group, enabling them to operate for more than two years. One of the affected companies, in Vecindario, Gran Canaria, lost jewellery worth 415,000 euros, and it is estimated that the missing goods amounted to a total of 1.3m euros.

After a four-month investigation, police arrested the chief architect of the plot, a 45-year-old man, and five other associates. Their homes were searched, as well as the network’s so-called headquarters, which contained an abundance of documents. The ringleader was sent to prison and the others released, pending charges.

Casinos ‘must be sold’ TENERIFE President Carlos Alonso insists that his Government must sell its three casinos because of competition from private operators. “In the last four years, we have been withdrawing from many sectors ,” he said. “We must sell the casinos because we should not be associated with this activity.”

Big two fly the flag

AS you have read in this issue, Siam Park and Loro Parque continue to fly the flag for Tenerife around the world. When Siam Park was voted the world’s best waterpark by TripAdvisor last year, it was a real boost for the Island. I’m sure in their heart of hearts, the owners would have been delighted to get in the top five, but to walk away with the big prize was remarkable. To do it again this year is, arguably, an even greater achievement. They were there to be shot at - and plenty of the other big waterparks would have been busting a gut to get back on top. Key to the success, as much as anything, is the continued search of improvement. They have invested in two major new rides in the last 18 months, Singha, of course, opening just this week. It’s a real statement of intent and they are far from finished. I know that Cristophe is already planning his next big attraction. It would have been easy for the company to have basked in the accolade, and watch the money roll in. But in the same way that they always treated

Loro Parque as a work in progress, the same applies to Siam Park. There is no coincidence that tourism has grown since the Park opened, and the twin ticket is a real reason for people visiting Tenerife. As the latest tourist figures show, the visitors are coming from all over the world. “Daddy, let’s go to the best waterpark in the world,” pleads little Johnny. Dad goes on the TripAdvisor website and knows the passport needs to come out. Think how many Americans have now heard about Siam Park, Tenerife and the Canary Islands. I can almost hear them asking: “Where the hell is that?” And let’s not forget that the parks are welcoming the residents as much as the tourists. The annual passes are tremendous value. Loro Parque and now Siam Park have done more for Tenerife than any other project or organisation on this island. It’s hard to imagine just how many people have come and returned because of them over the last five decades. We thank them and are tremendously proud of their international achievements.

TENERIFE Cabildo has created a new, redesigned TITSA bus network in the South to provide better connections - and more often!

It will help travellers, and, hopefully, persuade more people to use public transport.

Cabildo President Carlos Alonso rubberstamped the new network, accompanied by Island Development Minister Miguel Becerra; Mobility Minister Manuel Ortega; TITSA manager Jacobo Kalitovics, plus Mayors and Councillors of various South municipalities. Alonso said: “For the first time, the South

is now catering for demand, and TITSA will provide connections every 30 minutes with the South Hospital, together with more buses and direct connections to the South airport.” The Cabildo will also hold meetings with industry representatives to improve the situation even further to enhance these bus routes.

Alonso added: “The new network will continue to service the existing 868 stops, optimising travel times and frequencies, tailored to the needs. “In addition, new stops have been incorporated to needy areas such as Cho, Parque de la Reina, Pelada Mountain and The Toscales, which have not had a bus service until now.”

Boot out illegal firms

SANTA Cruz Council is determined to kill off six companies occupying municipal-owned property for years without paying rent in Candelaria, Imeldo Serís and El Clavel.

“The City of Santa Cruz will keep the property if these firms are illegal,” said Heritage Councillor Alberto Bernabe. “The other alternative would be to auction them, as already announced.” He added: “What we cannot afford is the lucrative use of them by companies who do not have a licence, and do not pay any rent.”

Abbas Moujir, Secretary-General of the Federation of Urban Areas of the Canary Islands (FAUCA) said: “Why now, when some of these businesses have been there a lifetime? “We need time for those affected to negotiate and find a solution, because there are families who live off their companies. But those left in the properties must pay rent

like any other business.” The Centre Area Merchants Association states that all businesses in the capital should have equal access to these premises of municipal ownership. It indicates that firms occupying these properties owned by Santa Cruz without paying rent are illegal, and that it is unfair to other businesses in the area.

Islands awash with new shopping malls THE shoppingmall phenomenon is starting to explode in the archipelago. The creation of open trade areas in the Canary Islands has increased exponentially in the past four years.

More than 40 new areas of this type have been made and opened in the Archipelago over the last four years, and the list has now swollen to 57 Canarian municipalities. The new regional

government, led by Fernando Clavijo, has pledged to support these business areas. And the new Canarian Executive is fast-tracking plans for trade areas with new pedestrian streets, gardens, light-

ing, parking, and accessibility. Gustavo Matos, head of Commerce, said: “I’m pleased the new government is going down this road. It is a good statement of intent and will feed the

resurgence of many areas through traditional trade.” The Canary Islands Government has already backed these projects in Tenerife this year with an investment of 4.5 million euros in the Paseo de San Telmo (Puerto de la Cruz), the avenida de Los Pueblos (Adeje), the Avenida of Las Americas (Arona) and Los Silos (funding the improvement between the streets of El Olivo and Jordan). Similar funding will go to projects in El Hierro, La Palmas and La Gomera over the next 18 months.

Brits nabbed after death of German TWO Britons were arrested after a German man collapsed and died during an argument in a Costa del Sol resort. Ingo Dewitz was struck at The Captain’s Bar, in La Cala de Mijas near Fuengirola, shortly after midnight last Thursday. Witnesses said the two men tried to resuscitate the German before fleeing in a car with a UK number plate. Ross Moore, who lives on the Costa del Sol, was arrested early on Friday morning.

The 30-year-old is behind bars, while an investigating magistrate continues to probe him on suspicion of killing Mr Dewitz, 46. Moore was sent to Alhaurin de la Torre prison, near Malaga, after appearing in court on Saturday. The second Brit, yet unnamed, was detained a few hours later and later released on bail. As part of his bail conditions, he has to sign in at a court every fortnight and is banned from leaving Spain.

North hospital must be bigger CABILDO President Carlos Alonso believes that the North hospital will have to expand the would-be population from 40,000 people to some 100,000. “It would then enable delivery rooms and operating rooms, to be built” he said. “It would lower the health demand in the metropolitan area and could better balance the health needs of the Island,” he said, in a Radio Teide interview. Alonso believes the South hospital will be

operational this summer, with 100 beds. And he issued a reminder that some of the dayhospital services were already operating. As for the maternity ward and the surgical site, he said the 2meuro work, covered by the Canarian Government, was expected to be completed in 18-24 months. Alonso added: “The new Canarian Minister of Health will have to have the fastest batteries, pushing for these works in the South to be completed.”

on beach smoking IF plans to extend the current smoking ban in Brighton get the green light, having a puff on the beach will also be outlawed.

The local authority is still discussing whether to hold a consultation on a proposal to make outdoor public spaces smoke-free. Anti-smoking campaigners say the move would prevent people from being exposed to second-hand smoke while also cutting litter caused by cigarette butts. A national ban on smoking in pubs, cafes and shopping centres has been in force since 2007. And Brighton already has a voluntary ban on smoking in chil-

dren’s play areas. And smoking faces being off limits in parks as well as its stony beaches if the 12-week consultation period is approved by Brighton and Hove City Council. Deborah Arnott, chief executive of health charity Ash (Action on Smoking and Health), said the move would benefit the environment as well as health. She added: “A growing number of local authorities and other organisations are exploring ways of providing more smoke-free public places in response to public demand. “Football grounds and railway stations are already smoke-free, and, increasingly, children’s play areas are also going smoke-free . “Smoke-free beaches could provide a safe and pleasant environ-

ment, particularly for children, but also for adults who want to avoid exposure to second-hand smoke. “And on beaches, it will also reduce the amount of cigarettebutt litter, which doesn’t degrade quickly and is harmful to wildlife.” The proposal has angered smokers’ group Forest, its director, Simon Clark, saying: “Smokers should smoke responsibly, with consideration for others around them. “But extending the smoking ban to open spaces is unnecessary, unjust and another attack on individual freedom. “There’s no evidence that smoking in the open-air is a risk to the health of anyone other than the smoker.” He added: ‘Tobacco

is legal product. Annually, smokers pay over £10 billion in tobacco taxation - a sum that far exceeds the alleged cost of treating smoking-related diseases. “These persistent attacks on people’s lifestyle, and the unfounded scaremongering about the risk to others, must stop.” Since July 2007 a national smoking ban has made it illegal to smoke in workplaces and enclosed public areas. A council in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, is also expected to make a decision this summer about going smokefree in Barafundle Bay next year. The no-smoking ban is spreading and, from October in England, you won’t be able to have a drag in your car while carrying children.

Penelope film’s grand opening THE film Ma Ma, which stars Spanish actress Penelope Cruz and includes scenes shot in Tenerife a year ago, will have its premier in September. The Plaza de San Pedroe and the streets of Carmona, La Fuente and La Pasada in Granadilla were some of the points chosen for filming, in addition to the hospital units in La Candelaria and Universitario de Canarias. The presence of Cruz, who was also the

fim’s producer, was highlighted with a visit to the Island by her husband, Javier Bardemand their young children Leo and Luna, which attracted much media attention. And during a press conference, Cruz and other cast members made their feelings known about the thenplanned oil exploration off the coast of Canaries by wearing T-shirts with the words “No Oil Prospecciones” spelled out clearly.

Kim Jong-Un, the Supreme Leader who exercises complete control over the country’s 24.9 million citizens, was also seen voting in the Pyongyang capital. The elections were Mr Kim’s first at a local level since he inherited the position in 2011, with people reportedly “singing and dancing in a festival atmosphere” as they cast their vote at polling stations. Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency said: “All participants took part in the elections with enthusiasm to cement the revolutionary power.” Local elections are held every four years there, and voters choose mayors, local assemblies and governors, who meet twice a year to approve budg-

ets and endorse leaders, approved by the ruling party. In the 2011 elections, which also saw a 99.97% voter participation rate, 28,116 representatives were elected as deputies without a single opposition vote. Ballot papers present just one candidate to choose from, which has been overseen by Mr Kim’s Workers’ Party. And any dissenting votes are considered acts of treason. The elections have been denounced as an effort by North Korea to appear democratic, but are also an opportunity for the government to see if any established names are absent and to oust any dissident behaviour. South Korean intelligence believes dozens of North Korean officials have been purged since Mr Kim took power in 2011, including his once-powerful uncle Jang Song-Thaek, condemned as “factionalist scum” following his execution in 2013. The election results are expected to be announced officially early next week. No prizes for guessing...

No peace for these suspected thieves POLICE arrested a 39-year-old man from La Laguna on suspicion of stealing jewellery worth 1,000 euros. The robberies took place in El Medano, Granadilla, between 1st-8th July. The suspect, who has been detained, was said to have left the stolen items in his home, along with other possessions. And in Guia de Isora, a man from Playa de San Juan was arrested for, allegedly, breaking into a room

at a Puerto Santiago hotel by using the magnetic card he had as a former employee there. The 34-year-old, from Playa San Juan, who had been arrested for similar crimes, was said to have taken up to 300 euros. Finally, the Candaleria Guardia Civil arrested a 24-year-old man, suspected of burglary inside a retirement home in the municipality, after breaking a window to gain access.

L A T E - N I GH T mysterious drones, flying over the official residence of Spain’s royal family, have triggered a security alert.

Several small robotic craft have been discovered flying into the restricted airspace above

Zarzuela Palace, north of Madrid, where King Felipe and Queen Letizia live with their two daughters, Leonor, nine, and Sofia, eight. Most worryingly for officials, the craft have entered the airspace despite devices put in place to block radio signals, which are supposed cut the links between the drones and their controller.

They have been spotted flying above the Palace - the main residence of the King and Queen. Palace security staff have not yet identified where the drones are coming from, who is controlling them and what they are doing there. Guards at first suspected they might belong to photographers, hoping to get new im-

ages of the family. But this theory was ruled out because of the timing of the flights, always at night, in the dark. There are fears that the devices could be used to plan a terror attack, following Spanish security officers foiling a similar plan in 2013. Authorities said then that Islamists were planning to use drones to fly packages of explo-

La Palma’s all-seeing, 80m-euro sky wonder LA PALMA has been chosen to accommodate the world’s largest gamma-ray telescope, thanks to immense support by the Spanish and Canary Islands Governments.

Cherenkov Telescope Network Council (CTA) has agreed that the Canarian Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM) is capable of accommodating its gigantic scientific facility in the Northern Hemisphere. The decision was announced by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC). The Network Council represents the combined forces of two scientific infrastructure observatories, one in each hemisphere, consisting of an array of new-generation Cherenkov telescopes, for the study of extreme, highenergy gamma rays. After months of negotiations and assessments of the environment and various other factors, including scientific performance and overall costs, ORM beat off Mexican rivals San Pedro Martir Observatory in a final showdown between 14 countries. Spain will contribute 40 million euros to build this huge telescope,

mostly with financing from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER). The sum represents about half the total cost of this astrophysics infrastructure in the Northern Hemisphere. Rafael Rebolo, IAC director of the successful Spanish delegation, fought off strong opposition from the other countries to bring the CTA to Spain. “The CTA is one of the few European scientific infrastructures that qualifies and, with 10 European countries, along with Japan, Brazil, South Africa and the US, it makes the scheme an authentic global science

project,” he said. “The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory infrastructures will make it possible in a few years for more than 1,000 researchers from the CTA consortium to reach the highest level of scientific achievements in the exciting field of high-energy astrophysics.” He also thanked the Governments of Spain and the Canary Islands for giving their “strong support” to the Spanish bid to become Northern CTA headquarters. Manel Martinez, from the Institute of High Energy Physics (IFAE) in Barcelona, and co-ordinator of CTA-Spain,

said: “The choice of La Palma as the site for CTA-North is not only a success for the Canarian observatories, but also recognition of the impact and visibility of our Spanish scientific community, which specialises in gamma-ray astronomy.” This is the study of astronomical objects using the most energetic form of electromagnetic radiation. The first telescope, LST, will be installed next year at the La Palma observatory, which already operates the MAGIC telescopes, considered among the best in the world in this range of high energies.

eak up on yal family sives into key targets around Europe. Zarzuela Palace, in the El Padro mountains to the north of Madrid, was created in the 17th Century by Philip IV, before being remodelled by Charles IV. Named after the brambles - or zuela - which grow around the property, it has been the main residence of the Royals since 1963. The main three-storey palace houses the King’s offices, as well as the lavish dining room, library, reception rooms and kitchen. The top floor consists of guest bedrooms, while the lower floor

is mostly storage rooms. While the family used to live in the main building, two single-storey extensions were added in the Nineties, with one of them now housing the Royals. The other consists of offices, and also houses the palace security staff. King Felipe has been Spain’s ruling monarch since last year after his ageing father, King Juan Carlos, abdicated the throne at the age of 77. Felipe, 46, accepted his new role of King at a low-key ceremony in Ma- drid along

with wife Letizia and daughters. After the drone flights were discovered, Spanish police began reviewing security and are considering anti-drone measures, such as those in France. There, anti-drone craft have been developed after the machines were found flying over several landmarks and a nuclear power station. They are designed to tail rogue drones back to their controllers, taking images and beaming them to the police, before disabling the other machines.

Cheers, I’ll have a bluey BRIGHT blue … that’s the colour of Spain’s latest wine offering, conceived and developed by a sixman group in El Bierzo, Leon, in the north-west.

It is the first of its kind and, incredibly, the group have no history of traditional wine-making. Their plan was to create a wine that was not focused on the tastes and preferences of socalled connoisseurs, but

rather normal, creative and daring people. “We wanted to create a sweet and drinkable product, in tune with the changing world, where maybe the wine industry needs a little revolution,” said a spokesman. Two years of research, in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country, went into creating the final product, which undergoes a chemical process to change the colour and flavour. Unlike traditional wines, GiK has no rules. It can be drunk

at any time of day, in any way and with any or no food. GiK is produced through a pigmentation process. At first, a base is created from a mixture of white and red grapes, which is then added to two laboratory-formed pigments: anthocyanin and indigo. The last step is to soften the wine, using non-calorific sweeteners. It is now being produced and bottled in various wineries across Spain, and can be purchased online at www. gik.blue

Digging deep into history WARTIME tunnels beneath the White Cliffs of Dover will be opened to the public after lying forgotten for decades.

The secret labyrinth of underground, wartime tunnels, complete with graffiti, has been forgotten for decades.

And officials at the National Trust said was a “time capsule”, offering a glimpse into life during World War II. Bullets, and even a pools coupon, were among the finds during the excavation of the tunnels, which were taken out of action in the Fifties and filled in with rubble and soil during the Seventies.

Originally, they were dug out of the chalkearth in just 100 days during the early Forties, on the orders of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, to connect Dover’s gun batteries. They were about 75ft deep, covering an area of 3,500 square feet, and reinforced with iron girders

Greece back in the black GREECE has cleared its overdue debt repayments of 2.05bn euros (£1.4bn) and is no longer in arrears, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) The repayments - and another for 4.2bn euros to the European Central Bank (ECB) - came after the EU made Greece a short-term loan of 7bn euros. Cash-strapped Greece missed one IMF repayment in June, and another earlier this month. Greek banks reopened on Monday after being closed for three weeks. But many restrictions remain and the battered Greeks are facing price rises, with a VAT increase. Robert Peston, BBC economics editor, said: “Just because the doors of Greek banks are open today, don’t be fooled into thinking that they and the Greek economy are anywhere near back to recovery. “There are still major restrictions on the ability of their customers to obtain their cash, or move it around. “The symbolic importance of the European Central Bank turning on the emergencylending tap again was important, but it has been turned on a fraction only. “It has given enough additional Emergency Liquidity Assistance - 900m euros - to keep the banks alive in a technical sense. There is no possibility of them thriving for months and even possibly years.” Gerry Rice, IMF spokesman, confirmed

that Greece had fully repaid its arrears. “As we have said, the fund stands ready to continue assisting Greece in its efforts to return to financial stability and growth,” he said. Greece missed its first IMF repayment on 30th June, and another on 13th July during deadlock over negotiations for a third bail-out. The crisis brought Greece to the brink of economic collapse and an exit from the euro. But the Government has since reached a cash-for-reforms deal with its creditors, and negotiations are set to begin on the proposed 86bn-euro rescue package. For the past three weeks, Greeks have been waiting in line at cash machines to withdraw a daily maximum of 60 euros (£41) a restriction imposed amid fear of a run on the banks. From Monday, the daily limit became a weekly one, capped at 420 euros (£291), meaning Greeks will not have to queue every day. But a block on transfers to foreign banks and a ban on cashing cheques remain in place. The VAT is rising from 13% to 23%, meaning Greeks will pay more on a range of goods and services, including taxis and restaurants. The increase was among a package of reforms demanded by Greece’s creditors. Mark Lowen from a traditional Greek taverna said of the likely impact: “We used to deliver to offices nearby but most of them have closed. People would

order a lot and buy food for their colleagues on special occasions. That era is over.” Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras faced a rebellion from within his left-wing Syriza party over the tough austerity measures being demanded by other eurozone leaders, who are among Greece’s creditors. But last week’s vote in the Greek parliament paved the way for Greece to receive the 7bn-euro bridging loan that sparked the reopening of the banks. Mr Tsipras has since replaced his rebel ministers, but analysts say his Government has been weakened and fresh elections may be held in September or October. Representatives from Greece’s creditors known as the Troika are expected to arrive in the country soon, and talks on the new bail-out are expected to last about a month. The tough negotiations over Greece have also revealed divisions within the eurozone about the future of the bloc. Germany, the largest contributor to Greek rescue funds, has taken a tough line on the country, while other states, such as France, have appeared more conciliatory. On Monday, French President Francois Hollande put forward his ideas for a new parliament for the eurozone countries - and a shared budget. The eurozone is managed by the Eurogroup, comprising finance ministers of each nation.

and metal sheeting. After being rediscovered, a major operation was launched to clear them, which involved the removal of 100 tonnes of debris by hand. The 18-month project involved more than 50 volunteers, archaeologists, mine consultants, engineers and a geologist. Now, more than 40 years after being sealed up, the tunnels are opening to the public. Jon Barker, visitorexperience manager at the White Cliffs, said: “This rediscovered piece of the country’s Second World War heritage is a truly remarkable find. They remain much as they were when they were abandoned. “We’ve carried out extensive conservation work to preserve both the natural decay a n d

authentic atmosphere of the space.” White Cliffs volunteer Gordon Wise said: “Seeing the tunnels in their raw state when they were first discovered, handling artefacts and giving tours, is like standing in the foot-

steps of history.” The site also includes two rare World War 1 sound mirrors the precursor of radar - which gave early warning of enemy aircraft!

line plane, transporting British holiday-makers to Spain, was forced to make an unscheduled landing because it was running short of water.

EasyJet’s Airbus A319, flying from Newcastle to Alicante, diverted to Charles de Gaulle Airport on the outskirts of Paris as a precaution. The flight crew decided to land at Europe’s second-busiest airport to fill up its tanks, causing a two-hour delay for passengers heading to Spain’s Mediterranean coast. The Luton-based company said the water running low on flight EZY6417 was used in lavatories and in boilers which make hot drinks. Data from flight-tracking website Flightradar24.com shows the

plane flew south-west of Paris before turning around north of the city of Blois and landing just outside the French capital. It took off again after taking on more water and landed in Alicante about two hours behind schedule on Monday. An easyJet spokesperson said: “It diverted to Paris Charles de Gaulle as a result of a limited water supply on board. The captain took the decision as a precaution only, and in line with procedures. “The safety and welfare of its passengers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority, and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all manufacturers’ guidelines.” She added: “EasyJet would like to thank passengers for their patience and apologises for the inconvenience caused by this diversion and resultant delay.”

Romania PM faces corruption charges FOLLOWING a long-standing probe, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta has been hit with a series of corruption charges, including fraud, taxevasion and money-laundering.

They are said to date back to when he was a lawyer, before he became Prime Minister in 2012. Romania’s anti-corruption agency DNA, which has gone public with the charges, also said some of his property had been seized pending the outcome of the case. The PM, who denies everything, resigned as leader of the governing Social Democratic party on Sunday, saying he needed time to prepare his defence. But he will continue to fulfil his Prime Minister duties. Mr Ponta, who returned to work last Thursday following a month-long stay in Turkey for a knee operation, is accused of

receiving the equivalent of around 55,000 euros (£40,000) from a political ally and MP. When the DNA agency began investigating Mr Ponta several weeks ago, President Klaus Iohannis immediately called on him to resign. He refused, and opposition attempts to suspend his parliamentary immunity failed because of the Parliamentary majority of the Social Democrats and their supporters. But investigators now believe they have enough evidence to charge the Prime Minister formally. In recent years, hundreds of top officials have been convicted of fraud as the DNA agency continues its drive to rid Romania of its reputation for corruption. Many of those targeted claim the case against them is politically motivated.

Iran comes in from the cold IRAN has drawn up an agreement with world powers to limit its nuclear activity in return for waving goodbye to stringent international economic sanctions.

US President Barack Obama said the deal meant that for Iran, “every pathway to a nuclear weapon is cut off”. Hassan Rouhani, his Iranian counterpart, said it opened a “new chapter” in Iran’s relations with the world. Negotiations began in 2006 between Iran and six world powers: the US, UK, France, China, Russia and Germany. The so-called P5+1 want Iran to scale back its sensitive nuclear activities to ensure that it cannot build a nuclear weapon. Iran, which wants crippling international sanctions lifted, has always insisted that its nuclear work is peaceful. The US Congress has 60 days in which to consider the deal, though Mr Obama said he would veto any attempt to block it. John Boehne, Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives, said the agreement simply “embolden” Tehran. He added: “Instead of stopping the spread of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, this deal is likely to fuel a nuclear arms race around the world.” Israel’s government has also warned against the deal, Prime Minister Benjamin Urethane saying: “It is a stunning, histor-

ic mistake, which will provide Iran with hundreds of billions of dollars with which it can fuel its terror machine - and its expansion and aggression throughout the Middle East and across the globe.” He also said he does not regard Israel as being bound by this agreement. “We will always defend ourselves,” he added. Mr Obama insisted in a televised address that the deal would make the world “safer and more secure”, and provided for a rigorous verification regime. “This deal is not built on trust, he said. “It is built on verification.” Immediately afterwards, Mr Rouhani gave his own televised address, in which he said the prayers of Iranians had “come true”. He said the deal would lead to the removal of all sanctions, adding: “The sanctions regime was never successful, but, at the same time, it affected people’s lives.’’ After 12 y e a r s , he said: “ Wo r l d p o w e r s have finally recognised the nuclear activities of Iran.”. null Kevin Connolly, BBC Middle E a s t

correspondent, and a keen observer, said: “Iran’s enemies remain of the view that the Iranians are hell-bent on acquiring nuclear weapons at some point. “They have merely agreed to a delay in return for a variety of short-term concessions. “There is a danger now that Saudi Arabia will feel that a nuclear-capable Shia state must be matched by a nuclear capability in the hands of the Sunni states, too.” He added: “That brings the nightmare of a nuclear arms race in the Middle East a step closer.” Both Mr Rouhani and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif referred to the dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme as an “unnecessary crisis”. Mr Zarif said the deal was “not perfect for anybody’’, but it was the “ b e s t

achievement possible that could be reached”. Mr Obama, who is trying to persuade a sceptical US Congress of the benefits, said it would oblige Iran to: *Remove two-thirds of installed centrifuges and store them under international supervision *Get rid of 98% of its enriched uranium *Accept that sanctions would be rapidly restored if the deal were violated *Permanently give the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) access “where necessary, when necessary” The US President said sanctions’ relief would be gradual, with an arms embargo remaining in place for five years, and an embargo on missiles for eight years. Separately, the IAEA and Iran said they had signed a road-map to resolve outstanding issues. Yukiya Amano, the IAEA head, told reporters in Vienna that his organisation had signed a road-map “for the clarification of past and present outstanding issues regarding Iran’s nuclear programme”. He called the agreement a “significant step forward”, saying it would allow the agency to “make an assessment of issues relating to possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear programme by the end of 2015”.

Goldmine in the sky YOU probably didn’t see it, but an asteroid has just sped past Earth at a distance of just 1.5 million miles away - and it could prove to be a goldmine!

That’s why some observers were extremely interested in more than just its scientific importance. Asteroid 2011 UW-158 passed 30 times closer than our nearest plan-

et, according to Slooh Community Observatory, which was launched at the end of 2003 from the Institute of Astrophysics’ flagship observatory on Mount Teide. The asteroid, measuring around half-amile across, with a core made from platinum, is worth an estimated £3.5 trillion, according to astronomer Bob Berman, who believes private companies are making moves towards mining it. “There’s the little matter of the 1967 Space Treaty, and almost all

countries have signed that, saying no nations can claim a celestial body,” he said. “But it doesn’t say anything about companies, corporations, firms or private entities. Nations cannot claim a celestial object, but a private company can. So if they can get there and they can mine it with all that platinum, then good luck to them - it’s all theirs!” Mr Berman said that Planetary Resources, which recently launched a rocket from the Inter-

national Space Station - the third brightest object in the sky - was known to be keen on the idea. “At first, they were hoping for the platinum which this asteroid contains,” he said. “But nowadays, they’re thinking of water, which can be even more valuable to the International Space Station or other astronauts.” Space journalist Sarah Cruddas said the asteroid belt had enough minerals to “redefine wealth on Earth so it could, technically, make everyone here a trillionaire. “The first space race was driven by politics, but space can’t be driven by politics,” she said. “What it’s going to be driven by is business, and business investment in space. You’re seeing a new industry emerging. “Where we are in terms of exploiting space resources now is the same as where we were with the internet 20 years ago. And who

would have thought that would explode and change the world in the way it did?” Meanwhile, Mr Berman said the public had nothing to fear from this particular asteroid, which passed so far away that it could not be seen with the naked eye.

“This still puts it many times further away than the moon, so this time we’re safe,” he added. “And the next time it passes Earth we’re also safe. “Before that time, though, maybe those guys will have succeeded in snagging the asteroid and mining it.”

And they’re cashing in... THE net financial wealth of Spanish families reached 1,247,347 million euros in the first quarter of 2015 an increase of 12.9% over last year and up 6.5% from the previous three months. These Bank of Spain figures demonstrates that families are not only borrowing less but have also reined in their spending to reduce debt and increase their wealth. In fact, household debts, registered at the end of the first quarter as 803.322 million euros, represented 3.1% less than in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, total financial assets of households, before deducting debts, for the first time exceeded two billion euros in the first quarter of 2015 (2,050,669 million), which was 6% more than the previous year. Of the total family wealth, much of their savings in cash and deposits were up to 842.882 million euros, but fel1.5% from a year ago. But in equity, Spanish households hoarded a total of 812.777 million euros, which was an 18% increase over the previous year.

Endless praise for tragic film A FILM about the horrific Khojaly tragedy 23 years ago, which was directed by Lithuanian Aleksandras Brokas, is being recognised on the international festival circuit.

Following its Best of Show Award in the US-based Accolade Global Film Competition, Endless Corridor, has picked up two more prestigious awards. The Tenerife International Film Festival, held in Madrid on 10th July, voted it the “Best Documentary”, and Brokas the “Best Director of a Documentary”. Brokas said: “Such huge international attention to Endless Corridor shows that the story of this documentary is very important for people all over the world. The painful lessons of history should finally be learned, and the tragedy of Khojaly never repeated. But reality is different.” He added: “It’s difficult to say how the film’s success could affect the lives of its heroes, but we believe the fact that you are not alone in this world with your pain can sometimes give hope. “All the awards we receive at the Madrid & Tenerife International Film Festival, as well as the Accolade Global Film Competition - The Best of Show Award we dedicate to the heroes of our film, and the people who died in the Khojaly tragedy.” The Accolade award is so important in the film industry. Judges from this competition are well-known Hollywood film-makers, who also take part in voting for Emmys and Oscars (Academy Awards).

Getting this award means that Endless Corridor is one of 2015 best documentaries and, after this latest award, it has a genuine chance at next year’s Emmys. It has been submitted for more than 60 film festivals throughout the world, and most have already included it in their official programmes. The next one is the prestigious Cape Town Film Festival in South Africa, followed by the Toronto IFF and AFI FEST (American Film Institute), which will announce their official selections. The documentary includes memorable video materials from the meetings of Lithuanian journalist Richard Lapaitis, who witnessed the Khojaly tragedy and, with another survivor of the massacre, returned to Azerbaijan some 20 years later . They journey to find the survivors they first met in the aftermath of the Armenian attack. The accounts of both victims and perpetrators tell a dramatic story of the humanity and inhumanity of events in western Azerbaijan on 26th February 1992. The Khojaly genocide was committed by the Armenian armed forces, and some 613 civilians, mostly women and children, were killed in the massacre - and a total of 1,000 people were disabled. Eight families were exterminated, 25 children lost both parents, and 130 children lost one parent. The film, narrated by Oscar-winning British actor Jeremy Irons and produced by Emmywinning American producer Gerald Rafshoon, was presented in Istanbul, Ankara, Rome, Vilnius, London, Paris, Dublin, Berlin, Bern and Luxembourg in February. It was part of the Justice for Khojaly campaign, organised by Leyla Aliyeva, VicePresident of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. With further festivals to come, Endless Corridor is also attracting international attention from leading TV channels.

No-drug Pope sticking closely to his old mate! POPE Francis insists he did not chew coca during his recent trip to Bolivia, even though the authorities there said the pontiff had requested the plant to help him cope with the effects of the high altitude in La Paz.

The Pope made the remark when questioned by a journalist as to the secret of his energy during his South American tour, which ended on Sunday But he was adamant that mate, the traditional tea popular in his native Argentina, helped keep him going. During the flight from the Paraguayan capital, Asuncion, to Rome, the Pope said: .”You wanted to ask me what is my drug of choice? Well, mate helps me,” he said. “But I haven’t tried coca - I want to make that clear.” Coca leaves, the raw ingredient for cocaine, are used legally for medical and religious purposes in Bolivia. The leaves are chewed or brewed in teas and work as a mild stimulant, helping also to alleviate nausea caused by high altitudes. Evo Morales, Bolivia’s left-wing President, began his political life as leader of the cocaleros, traditional coca-leaf

producers. The pontiff, who had part of a lung removed when he was young, stayed in the La Paz area - which lies 3,650m (12,000ft) above sea level - for about four hours only. The pontiff returned to Rome after an eightday trip to Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay, some of Latin America’s poorest countries. He addressed inequality, poverty and indigenous rights during his South American tour. But the pontiff ’s visit to Bolivia was marked by controversy when Mr Morales gave him a crucifix, sculpted in

the shape of a hammer and sickle. The Pope looked visibly surprised and, it was rumoured, the crucifix was left behind in Bolivia. The “communist gift” has been condemned as “arrogant” by some in the Catholic community. But Pope Francis has since clarified that he took it back with him to the Vatican. The crucifix was based on a design by Luis Espinal, a Jesuit priest assassinated in 1980 by right-wing militia. “It was a surprise indeed. I didn’t know

that Father Espinal was also a poet and a sculptor,” he said. “He was killed in 1980, a time when the Catholic Church’s Liberation Theology embraced so many different groups, and one of them adopted Marxist views.” Pope Francis also shared his views on the popularity of selfies: “Today a policeman, a man in his forties, asked to take a selfie with me. I told him: But are you a teenager? “It is a different culture. I respect it but I feel like a great-grandfather,” said Pope Francis.

£25-a-week ex-Chelsea star lands a £5m Lotto bonanza FORMER Chelsea midfielder Terry Bradbury, who earned £25 a week in the Fifties, has landed a £5.5m Lotto jackpot. The 75-year-old, who played alongside Jimmy Greaves and Terry Venables in that era, and also made appearances for Southend, Leyton Orient and Wrexham, won precisely £5,517,016 in Saturday’s National Lottery draw. He and his wife Eleanor are already planning to buy a family villa in Spain. The cou-

ple, who live in Buxton, Derbyshire, will also use the winnings to provide security for their four sons and nine grandchildren. Mrs Bradbury, also known as Ann, added: “The villa will be a place where our family can always go for holidays. “It is wonderful to think that our children will never have a mortgage, or any stress for the rest of their lives. “This win provides our family with security, and this is what pleases Terry and me more

than anything.” The couple, who used to run a pub in Tideswell, Derbyshire, bought their lucky dip ticket from a WH Smith store in Buxton. Terry recalled that the most he earned during his football career was £25 each week, getting a £4 win bonus and £2 for a draw. “I was getting about £20 for playing football, but a tradesman was only getting £8 to £10, so it’s all relative,” he added, He remembered Jim-

my Greaves as “the greatest goal machine I ever saw”, and “ruthless” Dave Mackay was the hardest player he faced. Of today’s stars, he said: “Good luck to them. You can’t blame the sportsmen. If some club offered you another £1,000 a week, you would go.” He added: “I had a good time at Chelsea and enjoyed every minute throughout my playing career. This is just the icing on the cake for Ann and me.”

Let’s fight the flab by taxing sugary drinks SUGARY drinks should be taxed at 20% as a “useful first step” towards the longterm goal of penalising a wide range of products in the fight to reduce obesity.

With one-third of the UK population anticipated to be obese by 2030, the British Medical Association (BMA) said imposing the tax could reduce the number of obese British citizens by around 180,000. The BMA is the latest body to call for a sugar tax - a move ruled out by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt last year.

Its report, Food For Thought, warns that poor diet costs the NHS around £6bn a year, meaning it has a greater impact on its budget than alcohol consumption, smoking or physical inactivity. It suggests that imposing a 20% tax on all nonalcoholic water-based beverages with added sugar, including sugarsweetened soft drinks, energy drinks, fruit drinks, sports drinks and fruit-juice concentrates, could subsidise the sale of fruit and vegetables. The BMA also criticises the Government for placing too much emphasis on industry involvement in developing a food and nu-

trition policy in the UK through the use of public-private partnerships. It said the approach of partnership working has also provided a platform for companies to promote and enhance their own brands, meaning that commercial companies are the main beneficiaries. The report’s author, Professor Sheila Hollins, said: “While sugarsweetened drinks are very high in calories, they are of limited nutritional value. And when people in the UK are already consuming far too much sugar, we are increasingly concerned about how they contribute towards conditions like diabe-

“Doggone it, I’ve lost” THE Independence Day hot-dog eating contest at New Yorks’s Coney Island left some fans with a bitter taste in their mouths. Matt Stonie, a relative newcomer to the socalled “sport”, devoured 62 hot dogs and buns in just 10 minutes, dashing the dreams of Joey ‘Jaws’ Chestnut - and those of his devoted folllowers - of securing a ninth consecutive victory. The 23-year-old challenger gained the lead early on, and was halfa-hot-dog ahead of his 31-year-old rival after

just three minutes. It was a far cry from last year, when Chestnut smashed records by downing 69 hot dogs - and won the match minutes after proposing to his girlfriend. Chestnut, conceding defeat at the Coney Island event, said the loss had made him “hungry” for a comeback, adding: “I’ve been looking for competition for a long time and I finally have it.” Yet the competitiveeating veteran still managed to scoff 60 sausages during the showdown

- miles ahead of the third-place contestant, who mustered just 35 hot dogs. Stonie, who picked up a $10,000 prize and the mustard-yellow championship belt, said his victory was “amazing”, and explained how hard he had trained to be a champion. “We don’t just go up there and eat hot dogs,” said Stonie. “We practise for this - we prepare our bodies. “It was a tough contest. Joey brings it all, and I had to push really hard to beat him. But I feel great.”

tes.” She added: “We know from experiences in other countries that taxation on unhealthy food and drinks can improve health outcomes, and the strongest evidence of effectiveness is for a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. “If a tax of at least 20% is introduced, it could reduce the prevalence of obesity in the UK by around 180,000 people. “We know that the majority of the UK population, particularly lowincome households, are not consuming enough fruit and vegetables, so financial measu r e s should also

be considered to subsidise their price, which has risen by 30% since 2008. “This is an important way to help redress the imbalance, highlighted previously between the cost of healthy and unhealthy products, which particularly impacts on individuals and families affected by food poverty.”

Pigeons on the pill!

A CATALAN town near Barcelona is putting its ever-growing pigeon population on the pill a form of corn-seed contraception - to reduce the numbers. A statement from Badia del Vallès council on the town hall website informed readers: “Every morning, three automatic dispensers will scatter the required dosage to the pigeon population.” Each pigeon will be fed 10 grams of Ovistop, a product made of corn seeds covered in Nicarbazin, which acts as a contraceptive. The first dispenser was installed on Monday near the town’s Civil Guard headquarters. The other two will be positioned on school roofs next week. The pigeons will be put on the birth-control pill from July until December, which is their breeding high season. The pill is said to highly effective by town hall officials, who believe that 80% of Badia’s pigeons will have disappeared within four to five years. Amazingly, to non-birdfanciers at least. one pair can produce 48 baby pigeons a year, which has sparked this birth-control revolution.

Family debts are lower

SPANISH families owed a total of 803.322 million euros at the end of the first 2015 quarter - mainly in loans. These amounted to 746,230 million euros, which was 3.9% less than in the same period last year. Long-term loans fell by 4%, to 719.771 euros, although they still comprised most of household debts.

By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct

LAST week, Bank of England Governor Mark Carney put smiles on the faces of people with Sterling heading off on their European holidays.

His comments about the possibility of interest-rate increases before the end of this year

Caring Carney on a high

took the pound to a 7½year high against the euro. And those with variable-rate mortgages, or major credit-card debt, will be hoping that the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MCP) didn’t agree with Mr Carney when they voted on Wednesday. If more members of the group decide to increase the rate this will, in turn, strengthen the pound. Interest rates are a key aspect of any currency because the higher an interest rate, the more likely it is that the currency will strengthen. For example, if inves-

tors believe the UK will raise its interest rate in the coming months, investors will then buy into the Pound, expecting its value to rise in the future. The Pound also gained ground against the US dollar last Friday when the Greece bail-out terms were approved. Meanwhile, although Greek banks finally reopened this week, the stock market is still firmly closed. Even those lucky enough to make it to the front of the queue for banking services will find that capital controls means there’s not much the teller can do for them.

The less-than-amicable bail-out agreement with Greece failed to make any improvement in euro exchange rates. And even on the back of the news that the ECB had released a further 900 million euros in quantitative easing rates failed to improve and sterling continued to climb. Greece reached a three-year loan deal via the European Stability Mechanism, edging the euro upwards against its counterparts ahead of Wednesday’s parliamentary vote. The vote was held to seek another package of funding measures from

international creditors, because there have been revolts over the agreed spending cuts in the country. Meanwhile, the Standard & Poor’s rating agency has upgraded Greece’s credit rating from negative to stable CCC+. Although the firm does not see Greece leaving the Eurozone within the next year, it still considers Grexit a possible outcome. All will depend on whether Greece’s economic conditions stabilise. With recent events in Tunisia and Egypt, coupled with the strength-

ening pound, Spanish tourism bosses are predicting a bumper year. Increased tourist numbers leads to higher spending levels which, in turn, pumps more money into our local economies. So, all in all, good news there. Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, keep on top of the currency market. Our friendly Currencies Direct team are always ready to help. Toshiba’s ‘profit’ shame HISAO Tanaka, Toshiba’s Chief Executive and President, has resigned because of the company’s declared, over-stated profits for the past six years. He will be succeeded by Chairman Masashi Muromachi, with ViceChairman Norio Sasaki also stepping down, as well as Atsutoshi Nishida, an adviser and former chief executive from 2006-2009. An independent panel, appointed by Toshiba. admitted on Monday that the company had over-stated its operating profit by a total of £780m - roughly triple an initial estimate by Toshiba. The firm’s business empire, stretching from home electronics to nuclear power stations, released a statement, saying: “It has been revealed that there has

been inappropriate accounting going on for a long time. “We deeply apologise for causing this serious trouble for shareholders and other stake-holders.” Tanaka told a media conference: “We have a serious responsibility”, and said the company would need to “build a new structure’’ to reform itself. Tanaka, 64, and 66-year-old Sasaki, both joined Toshiba in the early Seventies. Sasaki was President between June 2009 and June 2013, covering most of the period in which the firm inflated the profits. Tanaka and his predecessors are among eight high-level executives who have now resigned following an independent report, which found senior management involved in a scheme to in-

flate profits over several years. People took to social media to express their concern at the scandal, one saying: “It’s appalling how long this cover-up could have carried on,” while another said: “Clean out the entire company! Toshiba needs to carry on its legacy properly.” He also said it was the most damaging episode in Toshiba’s 140-year history. The company was created by a merger in 1938, but its roots date back to 1875. Toshiba’s accounting

scandal began when securities regulators uncovered problems as they probed the company’s balance sheet earlier this year. One line looked into by the investigators was that executives set unrealistic targets for new operations after worries that the 2011 Fukushima disaster might hit Toshiba’s nuclear division. While the report did not refer to Fukushima specifically, it did say that pressure within Toshiba was strong in the accounting years of 2011 and 2012. Toshiba will now have to restate its profits from between April 2008 and March 2014. It is unclear whether it will affect the company’s results for the year ending March 2015. Finance Minister Taro Aso said the case could

undermine confidence in corporate governance in Japan, and added: “The accounting irregularities at Toshiba were very regrettable.” The Japanese government has been trying to regain global investors’ confidence since Olympus was found to have covered up $1.7bn in losses in late 2011. It was Japan’s worst corporate governance scandal _ until now! Tomoaki Nakamura, Research Vice-President at market research firm IDC Japan, was not surprised that Mr Tanaka, along with the other executives, had stepped down. “In Japan, this news has been in the media for two months already,” he told the BBC from Tokyo. “What they need to be afraid of is criminal action by the US Securities and Exchange Com-

mission.” The report’s findings are expected to lead to the restatement of earnings, a board overhaul and, potentially, hefty fines for Toshiba. The inquiry found that the mis-reporting of profits began after the financial crash seven years ago, when senior managers began imposing unrealistic performance targets. “Within Toshiba, there was a corporate culture in which one could not go against the wishes of superiors,” said the report. “Therefore, when top management presented “challenges”, division presidents, line managers and employees below them continually carried out inappropriate accounting practices to meet targets in line with the wishes of their superiors.”

Tuesday 28th July, ITV1, 21.00 The information contained herein is embargoed from press use, commercial and non-commercial reproduction and sharing into the public domain until Tuesday 21st July 2015. Record numbers of British people are travelling abroad for business and pleasure. Huge numbers of them are ending up in jails in places where legal rights and the criminal justice system are tough, and terrifying. About five and a half thousand Brits are arrested abroad every year. Brits Behind Bars, from the award winning documentary makers Wild Pictures, follows the stories of three people whose lives were changed drastically when they decided to fly abroad. With unique access to jails in Florida and the Caribbean, the programme makers filmed moving testimonies from those who have been convicted, and are horrified to discover the price they have to pay. The programme reveals the plight of a Welsh woman who has already served two years of 12 year sentence in a Caribbean prison for allegedly killing her husband, and her family’s determined efforts to get her released. There are more than fifty Brits behind bars in the Caribbean. It follows the story of the businessman has been in a Florida jail for 28 years for a murder he’s trying to prove he did not commit, and the case of an alleged drugs mule who is willing to do almost anything to avoid up to twelve years in a Prague prison.

Week Ahead Adrian, head of birds at ZSL London Zoo, has looked after penguins 01:00....................... Kicks 00:40............... BBC News throughout his twenty-five years as a zookeeper, but he’s never seen them in their natural environment on the breath-taking Pacific coast of Peru in South America. The penguins are under threat, and their numbers have dropped from 20,000 in the 1980s to just 5,000 in 2000. Now Adrian, who’s recently recovered from an operation on a life-threatening brain tumour, wants to see first-hand what’s being done to save one of nature’s most charismatic - and his favourite - animals. Adrian first travels to Parque de las Leyendas zoo, in the Peruvian capital Lima, which houses a colony of Humboldt penguins to see if he can pick up tips and share his knowledge. Experts explain the threats the penguins face from climate change and habitat destruction, as well as getting trapped in fishing nets and being taken as pets or to be eaten. Then he drives seven hours south to see the Humboldt penguin’s natural habitat. His journey takes him through the coastal deserts of Peru to witness the daily struggles penguins face there. We see him visiting a marine rescue centre, getting caught in a bird storm of 250,000 cormorants and cradling a hatching egg in his hand as he witnesses the moment life starts for these very special birds. The journey climaxes at Punta San Juan, the most successful Humboldt penguin colony in Peru where Adrian is able to see thousands of these wild birds at very close quarters. “I can’t believe I’m sat here a stone’s throw from so many beautiful birds,” says Adrian. “Birds that have been integral to my career, that have led me up to here, that have got me through some lows in life. It’s spectacular. It’s a fantastic place.” Agile swimmers and surprisingly good climbers, the Humboldt penguins risk their lives every day to pass predator seals on the beach and get to their cliff-top nesting grounds, passing hundreds of thousands of cormorants along the way. The penguins wander past the huge flock, but Adrian has to adopt a disguise to avoid terrifying them - a mobile box which shows only his shuffling feet and ankles. The documentary is a testament to Adrian’s lifelong passion for these beautiful creatures. “It’s been a big journey to get here,” says Adrian. “It’s a childhood dream. I’m lucky to be able to do what I wanted to do.”

The Pennine Way BBC2, 19.30

This new four-part documentary series celebrates the 50th anniversary of the stunning Pennine Way, presented by polar adventurer and ocean diver Paul Rose, pictured. Paul and the team from BBC Yorkshire pulled on their hiking boots last summer to explore the 268 mile trail, which was officially opened in 1965. It stretches from Edale in the Derbyshire Peak District to Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish border. Paul Rose says: “I’ve spent my life leading science expeditions to the most remote and challenging places on earth. I’ve skied across the Greenland Icecap, made first ascents of Arctic mountains and run an Antarctic Research Station. Yet right here on my doorstep is the Pennine Way - a world class challenge! Exploring the Pennine Way has been surprising, a privilege and huge amounts of fun.” From the highest pub in England to the Roman excavations at Hadrian’s Wall and the red squirrels of Northumberland to the blustery Helm Wind of Cumbria, Paul Rose discovers the wildlife, geographical features and people that make the Pennine Way so distinctive and challenging. In the first episode Paul travels from Edale to Calderdale. He tells the story of Tom Stephenson, the man who fought landowners and governments to win public access to the full length of the route. Stephenson’s friend Sylvia Franks talks about his battle. Paul also meets author and director Barrie Rutter, who recalls some of the literary greats who have lived near the route - including Ted Hughes and the Brontës. And Paul visits Heptonstall to ask why the South Pennines have never had the full recognition they deserve.

Life In Squares BBC2, 21.00 An intimate and emotional portrayal of the complex relationships between the inspirational and revolutionary Bloomsbury group, a collection of friends and lovers who were pioneers of artistic and sexual freedom. Penned by Bafta award-winning writer Amanda Coe (Room at the Top) and produced by Ecosse Films in association with Tiger Aspect Productions, Life In Squares dramatises the close yet often fraught relationship between painter Vanessa Bell and her sister Virginia Woolf, alongside Vanessa’s complicated alliance with gay artist Duncan Grant. We meet the Stephen sisters in 1905, where a young Vanessa and Virginia are struggling to escape the confines of Victorian England and forge a new life for themselves. Their dream is to find freedom in creativity and live their lives without society’s rules or restrictions. When their brother’s death rocks their world, Vanessa decides to change her views on marriage and settle down with Clive. Will this marriage prove too much for her unbreakable bond with Virginia? And how will free-spirited Vanessa respond to the challenges of family life and her husband’s infidelity?

Hello Campers ITV1, 16.00

With a sprinkling of light-hearted competition, the series will see five new couples head out to a different European campsite each week, with the aim of winning a £1000 prize. Over six weeks, the show will travel to Spain, France, Italy and Portugal with a new group of ‘happy campers’ arriving each week. On arrival, the couples have to set up camp, pitch their tents and meet their fellow holiday makers before carrying out camp duties and joining in for group activities such as ice cream making, parasailing, cheerleading and yoga. Each afternoon sees some healthy camp competition when each camp couple will be able to win points during allocated activities, with the losing couple having to clean camp that night. There will be nominated cooks whose task it is to rustle up some tasty grub on the campfire and another couple will be in charge of organising the camp entertainment, which will be judged and scored by their fellow campers.

On Assignment ITV1, 22.40

Fronted by Rageh Omaar, ITV News’s award-winning team of specialist journalists contribute in-depth reports from around the world and the stories behind the headlines. The following reports will air in this programme: Domestic Violence in South Africa (John Ray) In 2012 Vicky Ntozini was killed by her husband in one of Cape Town’s townships. Earlier this year he was finally convicted of her murder. John Ray speaks to the family Vicky left behind and explores the disturbing issue of domestic violence in South Africa. One respected survey shows that 40 per cent of South African men have hit their partners. At the Saartjie Baartmen refuge centre in Manenberg, Cape Town, John hears from the director, who says they are turning away 15 women a week, who need safe accommodation. Young Professionals in Greece (Emma Murphy) With Greece still deep in economic crisis and unemployment close to 30 per cent, many Greeks are struggling to even feed their families. With more than half the population living in Athens for years, whole parts of Greece have been left almost empty. The younger generation tends to be extremely well-educated but a lack of jobs has pushed more and more of them to flood back into the countryside. Lots of them are now adopting an agricultural lifestyle, bringing innovative approaches to ancient traditional jobs and increasingly living off the land. We meet some of these enterprising young Greeks at fig businesses and snail farms, who have turned to their country’s past to take their future into their own hands. Cosmopolitan Beirut (Rageh Omaar) Beirut, the Lebanese capital, has for many decades been described as the Paris of the Middle East but it’s also been associated with decades of civil war. In this episode of On Assignment, Rageh Omaar travels there to find out if today there are fears amongst the city’s many different communities that the threat from war in neighbouring Syria will spill over and shatter this city’s hardearned stability.

The Day They Dropped The Bomb

24th July - 30th July 2015

W e dn e sday

ITV1, 22.40

“There was a soldier on the ground suffering from burns. I thought, ‘There’s someone on the ground!’ and ran towards him. He noticed me and said, half groaning, ‘We’ve been hit by a new type of bomb.’” - Yoshie Oka, Hiroshima survivor This new documentary marks the 70th anniversary of the world’s first atomic bomb being dropped over Hiroshima on 6 August, 1945 – a day which changed the course of history. The Day They Dropped The Bomb provides a minute-by-minute account of what happened on that day, told through the unique insights of the people who were there and rarely-seen archive footage from the time. Made by award-winning film-maker Leslie Woodhead, who directed acclaimed documentaries The Day Kennedy Died and 9/11: The Day That Changed The World for ITV, and filmed on location in Hiroshima and the United States, this programme features interviews with witnesses including the last surviving member of the flight crew of the Enola Gay plane which dropped the bomb, navigator Dutch Van Kirk, in his final TV interview before he died. Using rare archive film, news reports and radio bulletins alongside the personal memories of people who were there, the programme relives the events of August 6, casting fresh light on the British and Americans’ wartime race to make an atomic bomb ahead of the Nazis and its effect on the Japanese surrender. It also reflects on the debate around the morality of using atom bombs that continues today. Among the contributors are Russell Gackenbach, the navigator of the follow up aircraft; George Elsey - the man who broke the news to President Truman that the bomb had been dropped and the only surviving member of Truman’s administration; and key scientists of the Manhattan Project which created the bomb - Lilli Hornig and Bob Krohn. Telling the story of what happened on the ground in Hiroshima are seven survivors, some of whom are speaking for the first time on British TV. The survivors include Yoshie Oka, who broke the news of a new type of bomb to the world from a bunker in the devastated city, and Tetsushi Yonezawa, who was just seven years old at the time and was one of only 14 people to survive within 750 metres of the hypocentre of the explosion.

Atlantic: The Wildest Ocean On Earth BBC2, 21.00

In this landmark series, the BBC Natural History Unit explores a vast ocean that stretches nearly 10,000 miles, from Arctic to Antarctic and from sun-drenched tropical reefs to crushing abyssal depths. Over three programmes it reveals the amazing, surprising and resilient inhabitants of the Atlantic, both animals and people, as they pit themselves against the world’s wildest ocean. Narrated by Cillian Murphy, the first programme, Life Stream, follows the Gulf Stream - a massive ocean current travelling thousands of miles across the North Atlantic. Huge gatherings of whales gorge on fish beneath the Northern Lights, giant turtles chase monstrous jellyfish and fishermen battle for survival in mountainous seas. This extraordinary current is a migration superhighway and brings fertility to the ocean, but it also warms Northern Europe, even keeping part of the Arctic Ocean free of ice in winter. Everywhere it flows, the Gulf Stream helps to drive life.

Entertainment

24th July - 30th July 2015

By Jamie Droo IT is commonly said that if you find a job you enjoy, you will never work another day in your life. And when it comes to working as an entertainer, that statement rings very true.

Working on stage and entertaining audiences is an extremely rewarding career, and many entertainers do not see it as a job. For many, it is a yearning to be on stage and a need to perform. In some cases there are people who would make superb entertainers but do not have that need to be on stage. Others have the need but not the talent. When it comes to defining talent, it becomes a touchy area. It is easy to tell people that they are brilliant. I was recently blown away by the voice of a lady, who was on holiday with her family when she decided, under duress from her family, to get up and sing on the karaoke. It was later on in the evening and the family had been in the bar for a good few hours. They’d sat through a cabaret show and a long list of karaoke singers who were indifferent to the usual run-of-the-mill crooners you can hear every night. Her husband asked if she could sing, and informed me that I may have to coax her little as she doesn’t really like to get up. He also she was fabulous, and an excellent singer as well. My experience told me: “Here we go again.” It took a little coercion from the audience and me, but it wasn’t too long before she was walking towards the stage nervously. She then told me what she wanted to sing and it happened to be one of my favourite songs; Joss Stone’s Super

37 CW

OPPOSITES DON’T ALWAYS ATTRACT Duper Love. As soon as the music began she started to move to the groove of the track and it was then, before she had sung a note, that I began to think: “Maybe she is going to be good.” It was just a gut feeling because she seemed to be acting like a pro. She did more than exceed our expectations. As soon as the first few vocal notes came out, jaws began to drop and that wide-eyed look you normally see on well-edited clips on TV shows like X Factor, began to spread around the audience as they burst in to spontaneous applause. The lady was in her mid-thirties, I would say, and the reaction of the audience threw her a little. But what a voice. At the end of the song, I said to her: “You have to be a pro singer, you must be in the business.” It turns out that she was a nurse and didn’t sing professionally at all. And when she does sing, it is under pressure from her family. It’s very hard to understand why someone

with such talent would not want to earn a living from it. I suppose, like the profession she is in, it is a calling. Everyone in the audience wanted more and she obliged, giving us One Moment In Time by the late, great Whitney Houston. She received a standing ovation from most of the audience and was approached by at least a dozen people afterwards who wanted to tell her how much they enjoyed her singing. This can be quite overwhelming if you are not used to handling it and able to graciously accept so much praise. I asked how long she was on holiday for, and she had another week. I was looking forward to showcasing her talent again but, sadly, we didn’t see her again. Being on stage isn’t for everyone, regardless of how good a person is. On the flip-side of that story, some time ago a family were in the audience and a similar thing happened, only this time I wasn’t politely approached by one member of the family, I was shouted at by all of them and what was heard was a mishmash of drunken slurs

that roughly translated to: “Get Gary up, he’s a perfessional.” That would be professional for those who don’t drink on an empty head. Keeping calm, I invited him up. As soon as I heard the words, “what am I singing?” I realised that this “perfessional” might not be all that. My reply to his question was quick and simple as I told him he was singing I’m A Firestarter by Prodigy. “I don’t know that one” he replied. “I sing in the West End and I’m a Michael Buble Tribute. After telling the audience about his background and filling them with anticipation, he finally settled on Buble’s version of Cry Me A River. There was a little air of over-confidence coming from Gary, who hailed from Essex, as he said: “I’ll do you a few if you like to help you out.” Bearing in mind he had been in the bar for less than five minutes and the drinks had not yet even been delivered to his party, he seemed certain that this stage needed him. Again, experience was screaming at me, telling me that this guy was deluded. But the

voice of reason was telling me that everyone should have a fair hearing, with the judge and jury right there in front of him. I gave him the respect I would give any pro act, and then it was time for the audience to hear Gary’s Cry Me A River. The song has such a dramatic buildup and Gary began telling the audience that he had been booked to sing in his hotel the next night and invited the whole bar to come to his show. And then he began to sing. Wow! I can only say that the sound of his “Buble” bursting was more melodic than his voice. The same thing happened in the audience as in the previous story of the singing nurse. Jaws began dropping, although this time the thought process was very different. He started in the wrong key and looked back at me as if it were my fault. His family, though, loved watching their Gary on stage. For the rest of us, the only thing crying was not the proverbial river but our ears. By the end of the song, the only people clapping were his

V

seven fans from Essex and a few polite members of the audience. This didn’t deter him, and he wanted to do Buble’s Everything next. “I’m better at that,” he said. I could hear sniggers from the audience. I didn’t want to embarrass him more than he had already done himself so I told him I would call him back up in a while after we let more singers have a go. He wasn’t approached by at least a dozen people to compliment him on his amazing voice and, as he left around an hour later, I asked if he’d be back to see us again. He said he would be down the following night after his hotel gig. The one we were all invited to. I asked him how long he was in Tenerife for and he, like the nurse, had a week left on his holiday. Much to my dismay, we never saw Gary again. Probably because he had been booked up for the whole week in his hotel to keep his audience of seven Essex fans happy. Believe me, being on stage isn’t for everyone, regardless of how good a person thinks he is!

Costalarbol, the organic Rioja THERE is lots to like about the Alberto Ramirez wineries, and their amazing Costalarbol brings a fresh perspective on young reds of Rioja.

With a short barrelageing process, the vineyard organically combines the expression of three redgrape varieties: Graciano, Tempranillo and Garnacha. Located on deep soils with plenty of limestone rock, the average age of the vineyards show the quality - Tempranillo from 40 to 100 years, over 40 years for the Grenache, 15-30 years at the Graciano and 50 years in Viura. The goal of this grower is to get centenarian vineyards. They also have 12 hec-

tares, currently fallow, and this soil has been producing fine grapes for between 60 and 100 years. It’s clearly a longterm, patient project. The success of the wines lies in the potential in the Graciano variety, which is very difficult to grow. It requires a limited humidity and temperature so it is not very abundant, even in the Rioja region right now. The vineyards co-exist in a natural environment with high biodiversity. In addition, the weather conditions are so important. This region has little rainfall, making it a place where the chances are excellent for growing organic vineyards.

Growing org a n i c grapes is not easy and they use manure to fertilise the soil instead of massp r o duced fertilis -

ers. They do not use herbicides, synthetic pesticides or insecticides. The wine itself is produced in 3,000-litre tanks, designed to be porous. This allows the wine to breathe and once-pressed, via a vertical air press which doesn’t harm the skin, the malolactic fermentation in the French oak barrels begins. They also use stainless steel tanks with a 15,000-litre capacity, and wooden vats of 5,000 litres. The indigenous yeast fermentation allows natural stabilisation of the wine without gelatine, eggs or any other animal product. It also has a precise control over adding sulphites (15%), which is half the usual amount. And 50% the finished product comes from Graciano, which gives it structure and complexity. The three varieties are mixed to perfection before bottling. This wine has a strong presence of fruit flavours, balanced with the wood given by the barrelageing in the French oak. The wine is awardwinning, scooping

medals in Biocordoba, BioMillesime, BioFach, the International Wine Challenge and Ecovino. The wines are certified by the Regulating Council of Origin Rioja. In fact, La Rioja was the first community to grant such certification, in 1991. Tasting notes: Deep purple in the centre, with blue tones on the edge. Very aromatic with wild blueberries. The wine is very bright on the palate with a long finish. With firm tannins that gives it structure,

it is a tasty and casual wine. With its black-cherry colour, a crisp blackfruit smell and the right acidity taste, which give its freshness and fruitiness, it is the perfect wine with tapas, meats and cheeses. Come and try this wine in our facilities in Las Chafiras Prestigio y Tradición Calle Arujo, 2, Monday to Friday (9.30am-6pm) and Saturday (10am2pm). LONG and THE SHORT OF IT...

Paradise? It’s just 30 minutes away!

By Vanessa Vee THIS week we are having a brief look at Fuerteventura. one of our neighbouring Canary Islands, which is just a half-hour flight from Tenerife.

This makes this a really accessible option for a short or long break. And, with 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, Fuerteventura is the closest Canary Island to the African coast, with only 100km separating the Punta de la Entallada from Cape Juby in Morocco and is the second largest of all the islands after Tenerife. The weather there is very similar to Florida and Mexico which are on the same latitude, which make this island an ideal holiday location. With its volcanic, rugged terrain, surrounded by breathtaking beaches, the name Fuerteventura takes on three loosely-translated meanings in Spanish: strong adventure, strong fortune and strong wind, and there is no other island in the Canaries with as many enormous sand dunes and long sandy beaches (more than 150). Even though most of the land on Fuerteventura consists of stone and rock, this island has some of the most impressive beaches in the whole of Europe. The island is ap-

proximately 98km long and 30km across at the widest point. And Fuerteventura is generally regarded as the oldest of all the Canaries, its strange contours coming from various volcanic episodes. The last eruption occurred about 7,000 years ago, so you’re pretty safe there! Water sports are very popular in Fuerteventura. Every year, hundreds of surfers, windsurfers, kite-surfers, and divers descend on Fuerteventura and, during July, the island is host to the PWA world wind-surfing speed and slalom events at Sotavento, in the South. There are many new attractions, inviting tourists to discover different aspects of the island’s landscape and culture, such as the Betancuria Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography and Tefia Craft Village, to name but a couple. Today, there are 100,000 residents on the island, which boasts a modern airport and several thriving towns, complete with nightlife, restaurants, spas, hotels and resorts. The dry landscape connects it all. And then, folded and tucked into the edges of its perimeter, are those unique, quiet beaches locals love and visitors come to discover: El Cotillo, Playa de Sotavento de Jandia, Costa Caleta, Cofete and Corralejo. Among them remain enchanting fishing villages such as Las Playitas, Puerto del Rosario, Jandía and El Cotillo. Tourists flock to the northern area of Corralejo for off-roading,

submarine trips, kitesurfing, diving excursions, boating, hiking as well as bird-watching. A 20-minute boat ride takes groups to Lobos Island (only 6sq/km), where you can really get away from it all. The tiny, natural reserve’s extinct volcano, strange rock formations, seabird colonies and its silky expanse of smooth, white sand beaches draw many visitors in. Golfers tee-off all year round in the centre of the island, quite similar to Tenerife. Away from the sea and shore, Fuerteventura’s inland towns offer another perspective of island living. In the very middle of the island, the charming hamlet of Tiscamanita is known for its windmills and cultivation of aloe vera. Tefia boasts the Ecomuseo de la Alcogida, a museum that depicts rural island life. The old capital of La Oliva, minutes away from Corralejo in the north, houses a beautiful 18th century church. Betancuria attracts art and craft lovers. Fuerteventurian goats produce one of the only two Canarian cheeses with a protected denomination of origin, called Majorero. During seasonal winetasting events, sommeliers smartly pair the firm white cheese’s milky, nutty flavour with the house Spanish Rioja. The island’s cuisine, like other Canary Islands, features fresh fish and seafood. The most frequented resorts tend to be Caleta de Fuste or Corralejo, with a whole host of apartments and hotels to choose from. This really is an island worth discovering - so close to us here, yet so different. Tenerife Sunshine Travel can tailormake your visit to Fuerteventura. For example, seven nights’ all-inclusive, based on two Canarian residents sharing, including return flights and resort transfers in August from only 600 euros per person. ONE of my clients recently had her long hair cut to a chin-length bob … then returned to have it cut even shorter.

“Why the sudden change of mind,” I asked? And she said the medium length made her feel “mumsy” and that she wanted a “funkier” look. Great, but what’s the idea behind the sudden change of mind? Well, her height! She said that in hindsight, the longer hair made her look shorter. She’s not that tall, anyway, and having an even shorter style made her feel taller and also seem taller. I hear you thinking: “Can this be right?” The answer is Yes, your hair can give you the appearance of looking shorter/ taller, and also wider or slimmer, too. So how can this be? In fact, your hair not only frames your face but your body shape as well. For example, if you are shorter, having longer hair can drown you and make you appear shorter than you actually are. But having your hair cut too short if you’re a very tall woman can accentuate your frame, as it can on a fuller-figured woman. It can make the face seem plumper because it shows too much of

it and might appear too masculine. Most of us stylists are taught to cut hair “around” the face shape, taking into account not only this but also the figure. This is why hairstyling is not only about choosing a style that suits you but one that complements everything about you, too. Pick the wrong shape and not only can it change your face shape

but your body shape as well. All these factors are what most of us take into account when choosing a style for you. As a client walks in to my salon, I look to see how she dresses and how my work will fit with her TOTAL image. It’s not just a haircut because it is a statement about you. So when you’re next in the salon, consider why we have tall mirrors - to see not only your hair but you as well. This is how a good stylist achieves an overall look; not just something that looks good as you leave but also complements you and your lifestyle.

What an eye-opener!

By Monica Dyson WHEN my mother was a young wife and mother, there was really no such thing as keeping fit consciously. She was far too busy to think about going to a gym or aerobic classes. Or for that matter, taking part in marathons or doing Zumba - if there had been such things then.

Her fitness routines involved housework without the help of labour-saving devices, shopping daily, which involved visiting a number of local shops without the help of a car, and taking my sister and me to school. Come to think of it, she didn’t diet, either, but she stayed slim. It was all about feeding a family as cheaply and as nourishing as possible after the austerity of the war years. And she probably gave herself less food, rather than see her family go without - because that’s

what mothers do! Women, born up to the Forties, at least, had a relatively-restricted degree of options for sport and physical recreation. However, there were opportunities in some areas for them to escape the humdrum of everyday life, build friendships, have fun and embrace health and well-being. At least, that’s what Prunella Slack, head of the “Women’s League of Health and Beauty” had them believe, although I’m not entirely sure to how many workingclass women it applied. Prunella was a British fitness pioneer, taking over from her mother, Mary, who founded the

organisation in 1931. The slogan was “Movement is Life” and in 1930 it would cost just halfa-crown per class. The uniform was a sleeveless blouse and satin knickers. The League was the most innocuous of the inter-war fitness movements, with much of the choreography representative of the era which embraced synchronised, mass-formation movement. They held their first show in the Albert Hall in 1931, with a relatively-modest number of participants. But by 1936, there were 5,000 women performing at London’s Olympia. Mary believed in deportment, and she would have her pupils walking with bowls on their heads to teach the correct way to walk, and to encourage spinal flexibility.

Prunella carried on the good work after her mother’s death, also becoming something of a human-rights activist and taking a multiracial team to perform at the 1953 Coronation celebrations Her organisation survives to this day, now called “The Fitness League”, which is a fitting tribute to a lady who remained active until her death at the age of 96. Many of my generation will be familiar with the fitness guru, Eileen Fowler, whose catchwords “Down with a bounce and with a bounce, come up”, were heard every morning on BBC Radio’s first keepfit programme. At its peak, in 1954, she had half-a-million listeners. She spent most of her life trying to make the flabby fit, although it might have seemed a

tad sexist as she said: “Women should start getting fit by standing properly at the sink, and men should learn how to get up from their armchairs properly!” In 1956, she launched the “Keep-Fit Association”, before moving to television, where she appeared for many years with a line-up of glowing “gels”, who all had EF emblazoned on their chests! Her exercises were low-impact and called things like “stretchaway”, “skipalong” and “swingtime”. Again, she practised what she preached and remained really fit until her death, at the age of 93. Diana Moran, aka “The Green Goddess”, signified the start of the more glamorous fitness expert. Appearing on British television during the Eighties, she was a source of inspiration for

many women, especially after surviving breast cancer and carrying on keeping fit. Today well into her Seventies she works as a writer and broadcaster. Derek Evans, “Mr Motivator”, leapt on to our breakfast television screens in the Nineties, resplendent in Spandex shorts. He left our screens in 2000 to pursue a career in music and, really, that was the end of TV fitness experts. After that, we were bombarded with advertising for fitness dvds, seemingly by everyone who was anyone, or thought they were! Many of them were “stars” of reality shows like “Geordie Shore”, “Made in Chelsea” and “The Only Way is Essex”. There is even a “Strictly Come Dancing” fitness dvd. Eliminating the expense of gym membership, not to mention the embarrassment of exposing your body to the outside world, fitness dvds promise a quickfix for the body beautiful, although two of its devotees, Natalie Cassidy and Claire Richards, have weight that goes up and down with the seasons. The queen of them all, Davina McCall, goes from strength to strength, promising fitness for just seven minutes a day viewing. Personally I think life’s too short! Opening my eyes each morning is often my contribution to exercise!

Apollo wants a new THREE months ago, we were asked to rescue a young dog running on waste ground near Los Cristianos. We responded, rescued him and fixed his broken leg. But now we are stuck because no one wants to adopt this beautiful dog, who will make a great pet. If you can give him a chance of happiness, call Sue on 629 388 102. We have a selection of rescue dogs needing homes, so please consider adopting one of our dogs, and

you will get a friend for life. Help Daisy recover Remember Mini, the cute, cream-coloured dog featured as a recent Dog of the Week? Sadly, her daughter, Daisy, was knocked down a fortnight ago. The driver failed to stop and she was dragged 40 metres down the road, suffering devastating injuries to her front legs and large friction burns to her neck and back. Her initial, emergency vet care cost over 700 eu-

ros for 24 hours, but she is now with our own vet, Cesar Bertoldi, who has operated in an attempt to save her front legs. Generous people, following events on social media, have been donating to Daisy’s ongoing care, and the Wigan Pier bar has offered to host a benefit event to add to the pot. BIKINI BABES By Carl Pattison

WE are in the middle of a heatwave here, so what’s going on, bikini-wise, when that moment comes to bare nearly all in the sand?

Accion del Sol News

The Holiday for dogs & tourists

A GROUP of Belgian tourists set aside a day of their holiday to spend at the refuge walking the dogs.

They had a super time, as did the dogs, and there were big smiles all round afterwards. So many people of all nationalities help us in lots of ways, for which we are grateful because it enables us to help these poor, deserted animals. Keep a cool head Do remember in these high summer temperatures to keep your pets

safe by ensuring they have plenty of shade, cool water. Yes, it’s a tough ask in this weather, but a frozen, cool-box ice-block in their water container will help keep it cool for longer - and/or add a handful of ice cubes to keep the heat away a little longer. Also, avoid walking your dogs on the hot pavements to avoid damaging their paws. Above all, avoid leaving your pets in a hot car because, even with the windows open and in a shady area, the dogs can overheat in no time. Please call 922 778 630, from 8am-5pm, for more information about

new home Costa del Silencio. Live entertainment is supplied by Suzy q, Reis Hinchey, the Memphis Belles, Alfie, Cara as Blondie, Harley Fox, Debbie Diamond, Gordon Slayney, Colin Gibb and more. There’s a tombola, raffle and, most importantly, lots of fun and good company. Come along and support your scene. MustCat time again

We have chartered the Mustcat catamaran again to meet huge demand for our regular whale-and-dolphinwatching trips. This time we’re sailing from 6pm-9pm on Friday, 31st July, at the usual 20-euro cost to Live Arico supporters, which includes all drinks on board. At the time of writing the trip is 60% subscribed, just from social media advertising, so please call Sue quickly to avoid disappointment.

adoptions, or if you would like to help out in any way. Maybe you have some spare time and would like to walk one or two our many dogs, which would be much appreciated by our inmates. We are always in need of blankets, towels, dog leads, collars and puppy milk, if you have any to spare. Opening hours We are open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 2-5pm, and on Saturdays from 1-4pm. The refuge is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and on Public Holidays.

Donations welcome Please note that Accion del Sol does not charge for adoptions, and every animal is fully passported, microchipped, inoculated, sterilised and has a clean bill of health before leaving the refuge. But donations towards the day-to-day running of the refuge are much appreciated. Call 922 778 630 for more information. Where to find us The refuge is situated at Granadilla’s Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER, the ecological park which houses the windmills.

No matter if you’re on the slim side, average or a larger gal, there’s no way of covering up on the beach if you want that all-over tan. Many a time over here, it seems that less is more, with pieces of string and two eye-patches being used as a bikini. But is this really what your body best favours? Sometimes, a little more in the way of material can flatter you, and also be kinder on the eyes of others. If you are the sort who doesn’t care what others think, then good for you. But for some people, going to the beach can be a bit traumatic. You can’t say you’re going to feel chilled and relaxed if you are bodyconscious, so choose your beach-wear with care. If you have the body to flaunt and you’ve worked hard in the gym, you won’t care. But for those who are aware of their body, finding sun-wear can be a nightmare sometimes. Try to shop for your bikini on a day when you feel good about yourself and not when

you’re feeling a bit down. Take a friend to give you a second opinion if you like, but make sure it is someone who will give you an honest, impartial answer to your “does my bum look big in this”? Remember, you’re probably going to be walking up and down in your bikini, so don’t go for something that looks great but won’t let you move in. Separates are ideal for those of you who are larger on top, or on the bottom, because you can mix and match them to find the one that flatters you best. Go for an all-in-one, or a swimsuit if you are conscious about your body. These can hide a multitude of sins, but also look amazing. Above all, be happy in what your wearing or you won’t feel comfortable at the pool, or catching those rays at the beach.

By Sue McDonald EMPLOYING an interior designer is not something you would probably do in the UK unless you were wealthy. But the furnishing business here in Tenerife is rather different.

In the first place, when you move house in the UK, you take a lot of things with you, including furniture and personal effects. But most people here are starting from scratch, so it can be a bit overwhelming for them to think about all the items their new

Interior designer for free

property needs. It is quite daunting to consider what you would need to equip a whole kitchen, for example. Then there are fittings, such as lights and fans, curtains, linen, furniture, pictures and mirrors. Add into the mix that you are in a foreign country and probably have limited or no Spanish, and it is easy to see why it is tempting to work with a professional. An interior designer here will not only help you choose the items, style and colours for your new property - the design, say - but also supply comprehensive

inventory lists for furniture and packages, right down to the kettle and teaspoons, sheets and towels. This project management makes the whole process much less stressful and hasslefree. Many people fly over briefly to buy a property and then leave the Island. Sometimes, they haven’t given any thought about how to kit it out, ready for occupation. By meeting with the interior designer, they can ensure that all the furnishings and fittings needed are included, and that they will like the finished result.

In addition, if required, everything can be fitted in their absence, so when they return to Tenerife, their new purchase is ready to go! Some clients have a good idea of the interior look they want to achieve, and others haven’t given it a thought, or don’t know where to start. In both cases, communication between the customer and the designer is very important. And today, thanks to new technology, it isn’t always necessary to meet up, or even to be in the same country!

24th July - 30th July 2015 If people have no idea of what furnishings they want, it is a matter of talking to them to find out for what purpose they will be using the property, personal use or rental, for example, because this will influence heavily the type of furniture supplied. Because most people here are starting from scratch, it is essential to work from a comprehensive inventory list, and also kitchen and linen packs appropriate for the property items, so that it is ready for occupation. Customers will usually have some idea about what colours they like, and whether they prefer a modern, simplistic style or something more traditional. With this information, a design idea can be put together very simply and, either shown to the customer, or photos and details sent by email.

On the other hand, there are clients who know exactly what they are looking for, but they still find it easier to work with an interior designer, who can save them huge amounts of time and money. In the photo, for example, the brief was from a gentleman who already had several properties for rental in the UK, and knew exactly the effect he wanted. He had installed a red kitchen, which set the tone for the rest of the colour scheme, and he didn’t want it to look too feminine as his primary rental market was male golfers. Deco Nuevo offer this interior design and project management free as part of the service when the furniture is bought from them. They will come to your property and give you a free estimate, with no obligation.

Shift work is so damaging

By Val Sainsbury MANY people suffer irregular sleeping patterns, and this has been shown, “unequivocally”, to lead to cancer in tests on mice.

Okay, it’s just mice we are talking about, but taking the test to the limit, this could affect people who work shifts, day and night, says a new report, in Current Biology And it supports the theory of health concerns about the damaging impact of shift work. Researchers said women with a family risk of breast cancer should never work shifts, and it warned that further tests were needed. Curiously, the data also indicated that the mice were 20% heavier, despite eating the same amount of food. Studies in people have often suggested a higher risk of diseases, such as breast cancer, in shift workers

and flight attendants. One argument says that disrupting the body’s internal rhythm - or body clock - increases the risk of disease. But the link is uncertain as people who work shifts may also be more likely to develop cancer because of factors such as social class, activity levels or the amount of vitamin D they get. Mice prone to developing breast cancer had their body clocks delayed by 12 hours every week for a year. Normally, they had tumours after 50 weeks. But with regular disruption to their sleeping patterns, the tumours appeared eight weeks earlier. The report said: “This is the first study that, unequivocally, shows a link between chronic light-dark inversions and breast cancer development.” Interpreting the consequences for humans is fraught with difficulty, but the researchers guestimated the equivalent effect could be an extra 10kg (1st 8lb) of body weight, or for at-risk women getting cancer about five years earlier.

One of the researchers, Gijsbetus van der Horst, from the Erasmus University Medical Centre, in the Netherlands, said: “If you had a situation where a family were at risk for breast cancer, I would certainly advise those people not to work as a flight attendant or to do shift work.” Dr Michael Hastings, from the UK’s Medical Research Council, told the BBC: “I consider this study to give the definitive experimental proof, in mouse models, that body clock disruption can accelerate the development of breast cancer. “The general public health message coming out of my area of work is shift work, particularly rotational shift work is a stress and, therefore, has consequences.” He added: “There are things people should be looking out for pay more attention to your body weight, pay more attention to inspecting breasts, and employers should offer more in-work health checks. “If we’re going to do it, then let’s keep an eye on people and inform them.”

Debbie, our Mrs Universe! DEBBIE Gilbey is a picture of health, and that’s not surprising because she is the current International Fitness and Body-building Association winner.

She is the “Miss” in the annual Mr and Ms Universe for sheer determination, and an extreme fitness regime, she has earned this title. Debbie, who runs Enhance Fitness, in the Reveron Apartments in Los Cristianos; guarantees to make all her clients fitter, healither and feeling fantastic! She has worked in the fitness industry since she was 15, as a swimming instructor initially, and moving on to personal training two years later. She has lived in Tenerife for five years and first started working here in the Bfit gym, which she took over in July 2013. And when you talk to her, you know immediately that she is a com-

petitive lady. “I only compete to win - and that is for everything in sports and life!” she says with a grin. The same year that Debbie took charge of the gym – renaming it Enhance Fitness, she embarked on the competition trail. In May 2013 having just 6 weeks to prepare for her first show in the bikini category, she was placed 6th. Not a great result, but a comment from one of the judges put her on the right road. He said her body was more suited for the fitness category. Debbie took his advice and in January 2014 she decided to compete in International Bodybuilding and Fitness Association (IBFA) events, She began traini n g for the Canarias’ c om p e tition which was in M a y. It comprised three disciplines: bikini, evening dress and a fitness r o u tine. H e r training went well but the eating plan, just as important as any of the training, was extremely erratic. Nevertheless, Debbie came second, which gained her entry into the Spanish National competition, which was held a few weeks later, at the end of May. She came third, behind the winner, British girl Louise Roper Rodriguez. That served only to inspire her for the future. Debbie focused on Enhance Fitness Gym, personal fitness and experimenting with various food plans for the

remainder of 2014. Her decision to compete in this year’s c o m p eti ti o n was taken at the end of 2014, the full commitment asserted from 2nd January. Debbie was specific about this date, saying: “How can you make a resolution on the 1stJanuaray? - You don´t just stop eating / drinking etc at midnight!” Her goal this time was not just to go to the Canaries and compete and qualify for Spain, nor simply “do well” in the Spanish Nationals. Oh no! It was to qualify and compete at the IBFA Mr & Ms Universe competition in Italy, where 250 other athletes would be contending. She explained: For this, I had to develop a good, sustainable eating plan, prepare a fitness routine for one of the disciplines and, lastly, train. “From trial and error in the tail end of 2014, I had developed an eating plan which was right for me, where I saw results and was never hungry” “I trained with weights five times a week, did Cardio three times a week, together with my everyday fitness classes. I

also worked twice a week with my martial arts instructor at Enhance Fitness, as I wanted a fitness routine with a difference” Debbie added: “It is not as simple as just turning up and showing your abs/ muscles in a bikini. It’s really hard work! “I was doing so well, sticking to all the above disciplines until the middle of February, when my family came over for a full month.” “Looking back, it gave me a welcome break. But from 20th March, I was more focesed than ever up until 4th May for the IBFA Canarias competition. “The last week before any competition is known as ‘Peak Week’ which basically means it is time to deplete the body of excess water. This is where a zero-carb food plan is applicable so that fluid retention from body is eliminated. “During peak week, (for some) distilled water is drunk. It is water in its purest form and flushes out impurities. But I must stress that this

must NOT be to be used for a quick weight-loss diet.” The IBFA Canaries competition format had the same three stages winning the event secured Debbie entry into the IBFA Spanish National competition on the mainland. After the Canaries competition, there was a three day re-feed of the body before the Spanish competition three weeks later, on 23rd May. The Spanish competition was on a much larger scale and higher standard of competitors. Debbie came second overall, which was great because she knew it meant qualification and entry to big one in Italy, six weeks later. “After a 7 day re-feed (unlimited eating) I ramped up the volume, with five weeks of intense fitness training left, eating 6 times a day between 2,000-3,000 calories plus mentally preparing myself.” “My original goal had been achieved, and now my ambition was to win at Italy and lift that trophy! I was now mentally and physically at my peak.” It is firmly fixed in Debbie’s mind. “We flew into Barcelona, then on to Naples and ending with a train journey to Sapri, in Italy 26 hours later - the day before IBFA Mr & Ms Universe competition. “Come the day and I was up at 7.30am preparing my hair, tan, etc, prior to registration at 3pm. It now felt real and my heart was pounding. At 5pm I ate a 250g fillet steak, double plate of chips and 2 scoops of ice cream, all to fill the muscles out. “I was on stage at 11.20pm - the dress round

(I still hadn’t drunk any water since 10am). Looking back, it was quite amusing because backstage I was doing press ups and pull ups in an evening dress, high heels and full make up! “By midnight I was starving despite grazing on dried fruits and nut which turned into an epic binge of dates and raisins. Suddenly I had an adrenaline sugar-rush, which made my body ping- I had never experienced anything like that before. At 2.20am totally focused and feeling almost euphoric, I was on stage doing my fitness routine. Although it sounds biased, I excecuted it perfectly” “At 3am began the final round - the bikini with obligatory poses. The arena was still packed and the result came almost immediately. I had done it! I got first place ... I had won. I was now IBFA Ms Universe : Miss Fitness! As I held high a golden bodybuilder shaped trophy I was crying with joy and shaking.” Needless to say, Debbie will be returning to Italy next year as defending champion. If you would like to learn more about fitness and nutrition and how to maximise your training or just start with the basics, you can find Debbie at Enhance Fitness, a personalised gym in Reveron Apartments, Los Cristianos. It is perfect for everyone, from the very beginner to the experienced gymgoer. It hosts a wide range of cardio equipment, resistance machines, free weights, fitness classes and a sauna to finish off. The ‘L’ sign on cars here

By Emma at Motorworld

WE have all seen cars being driven around, sometime erratically and sometimes very slowly with a green L sign displayed in the back.

You may have assumed, quite innocently, that the person behind the wheel was a learner driver. Unfortunately, this is not the case because this sign denotes a “new” driver - one who has recently passed his/ her test and who must, therefore, for a period of time, adhere to various rules and regulations that do not apply to experienced drivers. This is quite the opposite to the procedure in the UK, where drivers learning to drive have to display an ‘L’ sign and take it off once they

have passed their test. Officially, the green sign over here, known as a V13 sign, must be displayed by all new drivers for a minimum of one year. Its purpose is to advise other road users that the driver has little experience and that, perhaps, it would be wise for experienced motorists to take more care and be more cautious around these vehicles. By law, the sign must be displayed on the lefthand, rear side of the vehicle, except in the

case of motorcycles and disabled drivers and tricycles, where allowances are made. But they must still be displayed on the rear of the vehicle concerned. Previously, new drivers displaying this sign had to stick to slower speed limits, but the law was changed in 2011 to permit them to travel at the same limits as experienced drivers, subject, of course, to any relevant speed limits. But there is one element much more restrictive for new drivers

and that is the limits of alcohol permitted to be consumed, or be in their blood. In the UK, the limit for novice or new drivers is 0.25 milligrams per litre of exhaled air, but in Spain this is much lower at 0.15 milligrams. Many insurance companies in Spain have a nil tolerance on alcohol for new or young drivers, and often have restrictions on the hours they are permitted to drive. This does not apply to all companies, but

there are several who have adopted either or both these restrictions, one assumes for various reasons: to reduce their risk, to help avoid drinkdriving and to reduce accidents in dark situations. Another difference is in the points system. Experienced drivers are given 12 points (rising to a maximum of 15, one per year clear of violations) and new drivers are limited to eight. In the UK, points are added to your licence for traffic offences whereas in Spain,

the points are deducted from your total until you reach zero, when you then have to sit (dependent on the violation and circumstances) a rehabilitation course in order to re-apply for your licence. This is normally a theory course and only certain driving schools provide these types of courses. Tráfico holds a list of driving schools allowed to carry them out. And in most circumstances not only will you lose points and, potentially, your licence but you will incur a fine as well. As I have already said, the green L sign acts as a warning to experienced drivers to, hopefully, treat them with caution, patience and understanding to enable these drivers to gain experience. Drivers caught by the police without displaying the sign face a fine and, if a car is shared by a novice and an experienced driver then the L sign should be removed when being driven by the one with experience.

Hit the heights with Bluetrail challenge THE annual Tenerife Bluetrail race, organised by the Cabildo, takes place this year on 24th October and has already attracted more than 1,200 runners.

It is an extreme mountain race across the high-altitude centre of the Island and a magnet for all runners, serious or otherwise. It comprises five sections, each of a different endurance category: Ultra-trail, Trail, Media trail, Adapted trail for the disabled and Marathon. Basically, it is a trailrunning event with various characteristics for people with or without disabilities, designed so that mountaineers and athletes with different levels of experience and physical fitness can participate.

And with just over three months to go, Sports Minister Cristo Pérez is delighted with the response. “It means we have covered 60% of

Political Pep talk - from Guardiola FORMER Barcelona football manager Pep Guardiola has put himself up for a pro-Catalan independence candidate in September’s regional elections.

But it is thought to be a symbolic gesture because he has been named last on the candidate list and, barring a landslide, he will not get in! Yet he is a Barcelona icon, having won 14 titles in four years at the club. Now managing Germany’s Bayern Munich, Guardiola is standing for a coalition of two pro-independence parties. The Convergencia Democratica de Catalunya and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya parties are running a joint list of candidates. Before becoming Barcelona manager in 2008, he was the club’s captain, schooled at its

famed La Masia youth academy. He also played for the Catalan national team - an unofficial squad who play friendly matches. His former club have, historically, been seen as a standard bearer for Catalan identity. Chants supporting an independent Catalonia frequently ring out around their Camp Nou stadium. Ahead of last November’s referendum, the former midfielder signed an open letter appealing for the result to be respected. “We Catalans, along with our democratic government and institutions, want to vote so we can decide what kind of relationship we want to establish with Spain for the future,” he wrote, alongside other high-profile Catalans. Catalonia, a wealthy region of 7.5 million people, contributes more to the Spanish economy than it gets back through central government funds.

the positions offered,” he said. “Bear in mind that we have room for 2,000 athletes, and many will not be pretending it’s a

massive test. They will run and fully enjoy the natural areas of Tenerife, with its incredible variety of landscapes . “However, this year’s

Bluetrail race is part of Spain’s Ultra Mountain-Racing Grand Prix (FEDME) so it is an incentive for serious runners. “But the fact that the race goes through the Teide area should be sufficiently attractive for foreign and local athletes to want to take part in this regular event.” Those interested in taking up this uphill challenge in any of its five forms, should access the website http:// www.tenerifebluetrail. com/inscripcion- online/ and forward the information requested by email to inscripciones@tenerifebluetrail.com. One possible reason for so many runners applying already is the Marathon, which reaches a maximum altitude of 1,753 metres. It starts from the Pista de Mamio (Aguamansa), from 8am and

is scheduled to last for up to nine hours. The Ultra Bluetrail challenge, over 97km, has an 8am start from Los Cristianos and finishes in Puerto de la Cruz. The Ultra event starts in Los Cristianos at 8am and finishes in Pinolere, La Orotava. The total altitude change during the route covers 2,500 metres and the highest point is 2,512m above sea level. The Trail mode, covering about 66km and reaching a height of 2,500m, starts at Santa Catalina in Vilaflor at 8am, with a 14-hour time limit and also ends in Puerto de la Cruz. The Media mode, over 20km, should be completed inside four hours. It starts at 8am from the Plaza de San Agustin, in Los Realejos, and finishes at Lake Martianez, in Puerto de la Cruz.

F1 mourns ‘a shining talent’ FORMULA One driver Jules Bianchi died last Friday night, nine months after suffering severe head injuries during the Japanese Grand Prix.

The 25-year-old Frenchman passed away at the hospital in Nice, south-eastern France, where he was admitted following the accident on 5th October 2014. His family said in a statement: “Jules fought right to the very end, as he always did, but today his battle came to an end. The pain we feel is immense and indescribable.” Bianchi’s death is the first resulting from an F1 Grand Prix accident since that of Ayrton Senna in San Marino in 1994. The team for whom he raced - Marussia, now known as Manor F1 tweeted that they were “devastated to lose Jules after such a hardfought battle. It was a privilege to have him

race for our team.” Team leader John Booth described Bianchi as a “shining talent”, destined for great things in the world of motorsport and “a magnificent human being”. In a statement posted to Facebook on Saturday, Booth said: “Words cannot describe the enormous sadness within our team this morning, as we come to terms with losing Jules. “He has left an indelible mark on all our lives, and will forever be part of everything we have achieved, and everything we will strive for going forward.” Fellow Formula One

driver Jenson Button paid tribute to “a truly great guy and a real fighter”. The official Twitter account for Formula One voiced condolences to Bianchi’s friends and family, also referencing the young driver’s chosen race number - 17. Bianchi’s family thanked all those who had been involved in his care, both in Japan immediately after the crash, and later in France. “Furthermore, we thank Jules’ colleagues, friends, fans and everyone who has demonstrated their affection for him over these past months, which gave us great strength and helped us deal with such difficult times,” the statement said. “Listening to and reading the many messages made us realise just how much Jules had touched the hearts and minds of so many people all over the world.” In December, the sport’s world governing body, the FIA, published a report which stated that Bianchi “did not slow sufficiently to

avoid losing control” during his crash at the Suzuka circuit. In the days after the crash, the Marussia team said they were “shocked and angered” by claims that Bianchi had not reduced his speed, and that the team had actively encouraged him not to do so. Bianchi began his Formula One career as a practice driver in 2012 for Sahara Force India and made his racing début a year later for Marussia, finishing 15th in his opening race in Australia and ending the season in 19th position without any points. His best result was 13th at the Malaysian Grand Prix. In the 2014 season, he scored both his and the Marussia’s first Formula One points at the Monaco Grand Prix. Then came tragedy during the Japanese Grand Prix when Bianchi lost control of his Marussia in extremely wet conditions and collided with a recovery vehicle - a crash from which he never regained consciousness.

Betty back with a bang! OUR second knock-out competition of the campaign, the singles, saw a fine turn-out of more than 60 players spread over five venues. And it was especially notable for the return of a talented player in the ladies-only event.

Betty, a multiple trophy winner in the Oasis Fm Darts League, lined up at the Phoenix Bar with 18 other ladies to take up where she left off more than two years ago. I have to say, she was given a warm welcome by all the players. But, with the niceties out of the way, the

action got underway and Betty, although a bit rusty, dropped just one leg as she raced through the bottom half of the draw to book her place in the final. That’s where she will face Sue, from Naughty Nautas, whoqueaked into the other finals’ night spot after a titanic battle with Waterfall’s Lynne. Overall, it was a magnificent night of darts and a lot of laughs along the way. Well done, girls! The 14-player Division 2 event at Picassos saw a couple of the fancied darters taking an early bath, which opened up the draw for two Spear Chuckers lads to reach the semi-finals. They endured mixed fortunes, however, as Duncan beat Summerlands’ Tommy,

while Rob lost to Per, from Picassos. And if Per is half as animated in the final, it will be one worth watching! Three venues hosted the Division 1 section and, again, some of the favourites fell by the wayside in the early rounds. But the finals involve some wellknown names, and will include two players from Bar 180 A. Tom beat Waterfall’s Kelvin, and Bubbles

and Dave from Phoenix to qualify from Gaffers. And at Exiles, Mike Telf got past Phoenix’s Mitch, plus Steve and John from Boothen. At the third venue, Boothen, the other player claiming his place in the three-way final was Nathan, of Exiles, who came back from 2-0 down against Johnny in the semifinal. Finals night is on

Friday, 25th September, at the Nauta Bar in Guaza. Not to be missed! Division 1 (play-off match required) Tom (Bar 180 A) Mike Telf (Bar 180 A) Nathan (Exiles) Division 2 Per (Picassos) v Duncan (Spear Chuckers) Ladies Betty (Gaffers Jucee Girls) v Sue (Naughty Nautas)

By Adi Benson IT is good to be back writing my column again because it means we are close to the new football season - just two weeks away.

Saturday, 8th August, is the day I and many others have been counting down, so this week, I thought I’d take a look at the transfer window so far. It has certainly made the summer a little more interesting - betting on the Tour de France aside – and all the information was correct at the time of writing in terms of done dealios! ----------------------------------Arsenal: Much to the frustration of the Arsenal fans again, Wenger has had a quiet summer. So far, he has bought in just one player, albeit in a position they have struggled with for many seasons. But in Petr Cech, they now have a world-class keeper. But I feel they still need to invest in defence and, maybe, a defensive midfielder. Players in: 1. Out: 8. Spent: £10m. Recouped: £1.8m. ----------------------------------Aston Villa: It has not been a good summer for Villa fans, with the loss of club captain Fabian Delph to Man City, especially after he said he wasn’t going. It looks like the sale of Christian Benteke may have helped change his mind. But at the time of writing that transfer was still not confirmed. They have spent £m on Idrissa Gueye, who could be a direct replacement for Delph. Players in: 5. Out: 10. Spent: £19.2m. Recouped: £12.5m. ----------------------------------Bournemouth: The Premier League new boys are trying to find their feet in the transfer market and have so far played it fairly safe. Their big gamble is Tyrone Mings, who has come from Ipswich for £8m. They have also

made some astutelooking loans and free transfers. What they will need, though, is a goalscorer with Premier League experience if they are to stay up. Players in: 7. Out: 6. Spent: £8m. Recouped: £0. ----------------------------------Chelsea: So far, the champions have just done a little tweaking to their squad, the most noticeable addition being Falcao, who flopped last season at Man Utd. They have him on loan, though, so maybe it’s a gamble worth taking from a financial point of view. Asmir Begovic has come in to replace Cech which is a good bit of business. And, as usual, they have sent many youngsters out on loan. Players in: 3. Out: 15. Spent: £11.15m. Recouped: £10.75m. ----------------------------------Crystal Palace: Palace may just have pulled off the best transfer of all by persuading Yohan Cabaye to join them from PSG. It remains to be seen, though, whether they have anything left in the transfer budget because so far, he is their only bit of business. They did okay last season after a jittery start. but Pardew will look to bolster his squad further as he knows it’s a long way until May. Players in: 1. Out: 8. Spent: £10m. Recouped: £0. ----------------------------------Everton: It has been very quiet at Goodison Park so far in this window, with only a couple of signings so far. Tom Cleverley has come from Man Utd on a free, and they have bought Gerard Deulofeu back to the club after having him on loan a couple of seasons ago. But they are spending more time trying to hang on to players, because John Stones has his head turned by Chelsea. Players In: 2. Out: 2. Spent: £4.2m. Recouped: £0. ----------------------------------Leicester City: They survived by the

skin of their teeth last season and their main investment so far has been in bringing Claudio Ranieri to the club as manager, Yes, the Tinker Man is back! Recruits are needed and they have dipped their toe a little, but I expect a lot more through the door, Players need to back their manager if they are to avoid another relegation fight. Players In: 3. Out: 4. Spent: £11.4m. Recouped: £2m. ----------------------------------Liverpool: Brenda the Knife is back. He’s been spending like a sailor with the Reds, adding plenty of new players to their squad. Can he get them to hit the ground running, though? I suspect he will be unemployed by Christmas if he doesn’t! They did well to get a good transfer fee for Raheem Sterling, but getting £5m for Iago Aspas was surely more impressive. Players In: 6. Out: 10. Spent: £44m. Recouped: £49m. ----------------------------------Manchester City: With the relaxation of the Financial Fair Play rules, old Sheik Milkshake has got his cheque book out again to buy back the title from Chelski. It’s interesting to note that of the four players they have bought in, three are English. They certainly needed to add them to their squad, and expect more comings and goings because they are linked to every available player on the planet! Players In: 4. Out: 7. Spent: £59m. Recouped: £25m.

Manchester Utd: After struggling last season but eventually getting a top-four finish, United are backing their manager and throwing cash around like it’s going out of fashion. There is much speculation about the future of last year’s big signing, Angel Di Maria. Will he stay or will he go? If it’s the latter, they will need a decent fee after spending big on Memphis Depay, who could be another gamble. Players In: 4. Out: 10. Spent: £83.1m. Recouped: £10m. ----------------------------------Newcastle Utd: With Steve McClaren at the helm, Mike Ashley has loosened the purse strings, but only slightly. They have picked up a couple of good signings with Aleksandar Mitrovic being the stand-out one. He is a good centre-forward. but playing in Belgium is a little different from the rough-and-tumble of the Premier League. Still, he looks robust, so he may do well. Players in: 2. Out: 5. Spent: £27.7m. Recouped: £0. ----------------------------------Norwich City: It seems as though there is not much transfer budget for Norwich because they have been quiet so far, with just a couple of players coming in. If that is the case, it is going to be a long, hard season for Norwich fans because I just do not see the quality needed in the current squad to stay up. Goals and defence are going to be their issues. Come on Delia, let’s be havin ya! Players In: 2. Out: 6. Spent: £3m. Recouped: £0.

S o u t h ampt o n : Saints have again lost a couple of their best players to so-called bigger clubs, but it didn’t stop them qualifying for the Europa League last season. They look as if they have spent wisely again and bought in some quality replacements from the continent. My money is on Jordy Clasie to be this season’s stand-out buy. Players In: 5. Out: 5. Spent: £17.5m. Recouped: £37.5m. ----------------------------------Stoke City: Stoke have certainly put down a marker for this season, showing some real intent. They performed well last season and look as if they are making a real effort to finish even higher up the table. It’s nice to see one of the mid-table clubs go for it, and in some of the signings, they look like they have value for money as well. Players In: 7. Out: 7. Spent: £9.25m. Recouped: £18.7m. ----------------------------------Sunderland: After flirting with relegation last season, Sunderland have been getting on with business quickly in the transfer window. They have strengthened in defence with Younes Kaboul, from Spurs, coming in. But their main purchase is Jeremain Lens, a Dutch midfielder/forward from Dynamo Kiev. Dick Advocaat certainly means business. Players in: 4. Out: 4. Spent: £15m. Recouped: £0. ----------------------------------Swansea: After a fine season last time out, Swansea are looking to build on that and have added some real strength to their squad. Business-wise, they have been shrewd, and bringing in Andre Ayew from Marseille on a free transfer could prove a master stroke. The Michu saga is still rumbling on, yet he’s still there. Players In: 5. Out: 6. Spent: £9.5m. Recouped: £0.5m.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs haven’t been as busy as I thought they would be in terms of players coming in. But that can’t be said of players leaving the club. The stumbling block is that they still have Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor on their books, and they really need to move them on to free up funds. Players In: 3. Out: 12. Spent: £20.9m. Recouped: £28.2m. ----------------------------------Watford: The Hornets have been cautious so far in the transfer window, and they are certainly not blowing the cash windfall they received by being promoted to the Premier League. Players have come in, but they haven’t spent big bucks. The largest outlay so far is just £5.7m on Etienne Capoue, from Spurs. Players In: 7. Out: 5. Spent: £10.45m Recouped: £0.5m. ----------------------------------West Brom: It looks as though Tony Pulis is leaving his transfer business late as West Brom are lagging behind many of their immediate rivals in the transfer stakes. To date, they have added just one player to their ranks in the form of James McClean, who joins from Wigan. The fans must be getting a little nervy, but I am sure there will be more players coming in. They are obviously scouring the bargain buckets! Players In: One. Out: 10. Spent: £1.5m Recouped: £3m. ----------------------------------West Ham: So fans’ favourite Slaven Bilić, in charge of the Hammers this season, has already been on a European recruitment drive as he brings in players from France and Italy. He is bolstering his attacking options by introducing attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet, who is blessed with pace and is comfortable on the ball. Players In: 5. Out: 5. Spent: £25.5m Recouped: £5.5m.
