STILL GOING STRONG
Inside this week...
THE local elections in May brought a raft of changes to the Canary Islands but, in the South of Tenerife, one man showed that he will not be moved. Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga has been Mayor of Adeje since 1987, and he remains as popular as ever. Continued on page 3

Fraga full of ideas, even after 28 years Continued from front The self-titled “Adejero” won with an increased majority and had the pleasure of watching his protégé, Jose Julian Mena, take over as Mayor of Arona to give the socialist PSOE both key southern councils. In his first interview with Canarian Weekly since winning, he looks relaxed and content as he answers a variety of questions on a range of topics, most of which have been requested by our readers. Fraga is now 68, but to my eyes he appears more at ease than when I last saw him a few months ago. The stress of a mayoral campaign has melted away and his welcome is warm and honest. The Mayor is easy to interview, as you would expect from a career politician. He is 90 minutes late because urgent council business drags him away from his office. But despite the delay, he is conversational and expansive with his answers. He is a busy man, who works a full day’s shift - and then some! I ask him how he manages to get everything done especially at his age. “I do what I have to do as the job needs to be done,” he said. “Also I have great people around me, and that helps. I love what I do, and that drives me forward.” Even so, it would be a taxing job for a fortysomething. Does the family ever try to get him to slow down? “My family is use to what I do! I have a one-yearold grandson and he hasn’t asked me to slow down or stop doing this … yet!” His laugh is genuine, and when I push him on whether the family have asked him to retire after this four-year term, he laughs again. “The family wanted me to retire ages ago! I always make a commitment for four years, and after the four years I will then decide. So it’s not a Yes and it’s not a No. Retirement?
It’s hard for me to think what I’d do. I can’t imagine just doing the gardening!” While Fraga was always going to be re-elected, it was still a surprise to see such a long-sitting mayor increase his vote percentage and number of councillors. “The election result has reinvigorated me as it reaffirms everything that we have been doing,” he said. “The result was hugely satisfying. The changing face of Spanish politics throughout the country means you are never sure exactly what will happen. “I learned from the election that people want stability, and the challenge now is to live up to the expectations the public have.” Fraga was delighted to see Mena win in Arona as he had spent many years around his office. “On a personal level, it was hugely satisfying. But it’s also great for the tourism sector. “We can now start to work together on projects, and we have already started that process. A political line exists between Adeje and Arona, but it’s the same tourist destination.”
The Mayor speaks warmly about Mena, and it’s clear there is a lot of respect. So what advice has he given? “There are a couple of very important lessons you learn in politics,” he said. “Humility. The ability to listen and take advice. When you take a decision, you take it firmly and never be scared to make the tough decisions. You surround yourself with the best people.” It will be interesting to see where the big changes will come but, when pushed on naming a few ideas, Fraga instantly nailed the big one: “The Hospital. This is such an important project for all of us.” What else? “The motorway. It’s what connects us all. We have to get the roads right and, of course, the airport. But this isn’t just with Arona but with Granadilla and San Miguel. I also think there is a lot we can do culturally. “We should certainly be looking to work together to put on some really big events. There should be a synergy between us.” Ever the seasoned politician, Fraga is not giving too much away. But
being in his company, I sensed that there is a host of ideas in his head. The national election is now just a couple of months away, and campaigning will get underway soon. Even though Fraga is not directly involved, he knows he will get caught up in various national issues. One of the big ones will be security and policing. Recently, there have been reports about dangerously-low numbers of police on the beat, and it’s something of which he is aware. “There is not a problem here, but what we could do with is more resources and betterequipped police,” he said. “Because that is where the problem is.” One of the main topics in the Canarian Weekly mailbag is about tourism and, recently, the explosion of bicycles, buggies and motor scooters. In some areas the pavements resemble a motorway, and Fraga is fully briefed “Yes I am aware of this,” he said. “Also, the big concern of people renting disability vehicles illegally. “We are all aware of the problems on the pavements, and the police
are also looking into this. I am looking at ways of dealing with the problem. And it’s something that Adeje will control. Literally, as we speak, we are working on it.” Recently, Santa Cruz abolished the hated “table tax”, which saw bars and restaurants being charged for putting tables and chairs on public pavements. Trade has boomed since, but Fraga is not planning to make such changes in Adeje. In some areas, such as the main streets of Adeje town, businesses can freely put their tables on the walkways. But it’s a different rule elsewhere. Mayor Fraga was adamant: “In the ‘tourist areas’, the bars can use the public area or street, but they will pay something to go back into the public coffers.” When pushed, it was not something he felt needed to be addressed. But I’m sure the issue will return in the near future. One of the biggest complaints from businesses in the south is the rules regarding opening licences. This includes different rules from council to council
on matters such as noise levels, height of locals, emergency access and a hundred other strange demands. So does Fraga have any plans to try to set up a “one size fits all” model with Mayor Mena in Arona and find some uniformality? “Yes. Harmonisation on those issues is one of the main things I want to discuss.” General planning for Adeje is also being looked at, and Fraga wants to have more cycle lanes to improve safety on the roads. The increase in the sport’s popularity is causing some problems on the local roads. And talking of roads, the San Eugenio improvements are on schedule and the Mayor is also looking into solving another big problem. Parking! Adeje is an old town, and Las Americas centre is all built up, so what can he do to solve this big issue? “As our region expands, we have to address the parking problems,” he agreed. “I understand the huge problems with parking. “The new commercial centres will have their own spaces, and I’ve been talking to the hotels as well to make sure that, as they grow, they put parking in place. Short-term there some new projects coming to Adeje and we have started to look at mid to long term solutions.” The regeneration of La Caleta is well under way, and the newly-opened Siam Mall has been a raging success. Fraga, who is keen for his region to continue to grow, modernise and evolve, said: “The La Caleta project is being built to meet tourism needs without harming existing businesses. It will be a superb centre, which will complement the existing area and natural beauty of La Caleta.” A smile and a firm handshake ends our brief interview, as Fraga has business to attend to. Always working. It should be his motto.

Holy Saint! brothel donation is accepted by Guardia Civil
THE astonishing revelation about Spain’s Guardia Civil accepting donations from a Navarra brothel, “for a good cause”, has left the country’s Interior Minister flummoxed.
The unusual funding arrangement came to light when citizen group Observatory Against Corruption filed a complaint over a donation provided by a local brothel to Guardia Civil agents in Tudela, a city with a 35,000 population in Navarra. The money was used to throw a celebration dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar, the patron saint of the Guardia Civil. Group members, who noted the close friendship between the owner of the brothel and a high-ranking member of the local Guardia Civil unit, directed their complaint to the central government, demanding an investigation. Interior Minister Jorge Fernandéz Díaz, who said he had learned of the donation through the press, told reporters in Vitoria: “Such donations will no longer be accepted. We don’t think this is right, al-
though the money is being used for good. “We cannot, we should not and we won’t, accept donations from an establishment of these characteristics.” Despite complaints in recent days that controversial changes to the country’s security laws are being used to crack down on the practice, prostitution in Spain exists in a kind of legal limbo. While not illegal, it is often not regulated in any way. Amaiur, a left-wing political party from the Basque region, said it had put a series of written questions to the governing People’s Party, to clarify the total sum of the donation, whether the brothel had funded celebrations on other occasions and whether other events had been funded by the brothel for Guardia Civil agents. Previous attempts by the Guardia Civil to pay tribute to its patron saint have also, at times, sparked outcry, such as in 2012, when the police’s highest honour was granted to Zaragoza’s Our Lady of the Pillar. At the time, Fernandéz Díaz explained that the award was meant to pay tribute to the “deep roots of the patronage of the Virgin of Pillar, which remains part of the heritage of the Guardia Civil”.

Rajoy’s No brea SPANISH Premier Mariano Rajoy, just months away from the country’s General Election, has issued another stern warning to Catalonia that the north-eastern region will never break away.
After a glowing review of the economy, Rajoy insisted on speaking of the Catalan issue, and of the plans by regional premier Artur Mas to declare unilateral independence from Spain if his secessionist bloc Junts pel si wins the regional elections on 27th September. Though formally held to elect a new regional assembly, the ballot is being cast by secessionists as a plebiscitary vote (a direct vote in which the entire
electorate is invited to accept or refuse a proposal) that will express Catalans’ level of support for the sovereignty drive. Rajoy said: “The government is going to keep a watchful eye to ensure the law is obeyed, and we will continue to defend the law. “There won’t be any plebiscite vote, just in the same way there was no independence referendum held, despite all the propaganda.” The Prime Minister added: “No self-respecting country can allow the law to be broken just for political benefit.” Catalans held an informal referendum last November in which 1.8 million people voted for independence. Rajoy says his government will not allow Catalans to be “deprived” of their Spanish citizenship or Eu-
ropean Union membership. At the same time, he warned of the possibility that the current political situation in Greece could send shock waves to Spain. His message was seen as a clear warning against the intentions of the anti-austerity Podemos party, which has made inroads in many municipalities and regions since the 24th May elections. “Government leaders are here to solve problems, not create them,” he said, referring to Alexis Tsipras’ Greek government, to which Podemos has aligned itself. “And one way of creating problems is when you make promises to people that are impossible to keep.” At the 111th news conference held during his term, the Popular Party (PP) leader said the future for Span-
iards appears much brighter than it was two years ago and added that more people are “congratulating” his government’s efforts as they see the fruits of the recovery. Rajoy, predicting that Spain will post the highest economic growth in the euro zone this year, said: “I want to point out that today, things have improved and Spaniards can look forward to a more secure future with more optimism than ever.” Even though he will raise pensions by 0.25% under next year’s budget plan, he said that more social security contributions were needed to help pay pensioners, and that his government would continue with efforts to bring down the near26% unemployment rate. Last Friday, the Cabinet approved the projected 2016 budget,
PM is striking out against terrorists MARIANO Rajoy has stressed the urgency to combat terrorism because, he says: “It jeopardises the security and freedom of our citizens.”
The Spanish Prime Minister, speaking at the start of a meeting of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee, defended the need for “global responses and strategies”, saying: “Terrorism constitutes a global phenomenon that affects security, political, economic and financial, cultural, educational, social
and humanitarian issues. It also affects co-existence, religious tolerance and the possibilities for economic growth and development.” The Premier said it was worthless trying to contact terrorists because, “dialogue with them is impossible as they have totalitarian and exclusive personalities. “And that is why we need joint action and collaboration from all levels of government, the administration services and society to combat terrorism. “There can be no short-cuts in this fight, and any action must fully-respect human rights and the princi-
ples of the Charter of the United Nations. “The existence of foreign terrorist fighters is currently taking on a special dimension and a radicalised nature because of the spectacular development of telecommunications and widespread use of social media networks.” Rajoy believes one of the most serious aspects of this problem is that terrorist group DAESH controls areas of Syria, Iraq and Libya, thereby “facilitating its propaganda and adding momentum to the actions of other groups, as well as inspiring “lone-wolf terrorists”. A determined Ra-
joy added: “I am convinced that terrorism can be thwarted if we act with determination and fight together.” And Spain, in a bid to strip the DAESH terrorists of their entire territorial base, has joined an international coalition of 60 countries standing against this organisation. He has defended the support being provided to the legitimate government of Iraq. “We need to ensure that terrorist actions encounter an adequate response from lawenforcement agencies, and that effective jurisdictional mechanisms exist to bring terrorists to justice,” said Spain’s political leader.

warning: reakaways! which also contains measures aimed at reducing the public deficit from the current 4.2% to 2.6% by the end of 2016. The early budget presentation is seen by many as an election strategy to help boost the PP at the polls when the general election is called before this year ends. The budget also includes some additional spending on public-work projects, as well as research and development, which had been held up in previous years. According to the latest CIS government research centre poll, the PP’s approval rating has dropped to 25.6% from 44.63% in November 2011, when Rajoy w o n the
In-debt parties still raking it in LOCAL political parties have been getting more financial help than ever before, with Coalición Canarias (CC) and Nueva Canarias (NC) in 2013 received more than 1.3 million euros in public subsidies.
Yet they still closed that year with debts
of about 583,000 euros, according to the Court of Auditors report, which has been submitted to Congress. The account, detailing both public and private resources received by the parties and, for CC and NC, specifies that through fees and contributions from its “affiliates and supporters” also managed to bring in revenues of 451,457 euros. The total registered
income of Coalición Canarias in 2013 added up to 1.3 million euros, of which 854,086.04 euros correspond to public funding and 415,982.24 euros to private income. In the case of Nueva Canarias, the 2013 revenues registered by the political party totalled 552,611.89 euros, of which 499,920.05 euros correspond to public funding and 52,691.84 euros to private income.
election with a landslide victory. But the Rajoy administration, plagued by a string of corruption scandals throughout his term, has struggled to regain voter confidence and has, so far, been unsuccessful, as seen by the May elections, where the PP lost important strongholds including Madrid and Valencia. Now, though, as the PM’s term draws to a close, the Rajoy administration is facing a new corruption scandal involving PP leaders in Madrid. Reporters asked Rajoy about the revelations contained in the court report on the Púnica illegal kickb a c k s - f o r- c o n t r a c t s case, which has en-
snared a group of topranking and mid-level PP officials, including former Madrid senior official Francisco Granados, who is being held in preventive custody. Current revelations from court documents allege that public funds were used under the PP regional government of Ignacio González to “pay favours” to a computer expert to fill the internet with positive coverage about the premier’s administration. Rajoy called the allegations “absolutely reproachable” and added: “We would have preferred never to have learned about them. We have to try to ensure that these things never happen again.”

Arona’s tender is in the millions
ARONA Council has unanimously agreed the tender for management of the maintenance services and conservation of municipal buildings and roads. Mayor José Julián Mena, along with José Luis Gomez and Jose Luis Garcia, Councillors for Environment and Works and Planning respectively, thanked the opposition groups for their unanimous support for the new proposal, which includes the adoption of new administrative and technical clauses. The basic tender budget will be 2,234,076 euros plus IGIC for each year, with a contract until August 2019. The city also gave the green light to the payment of two important areas. The first, for Comsa, is related to the Sports Complex Cruz del Guanche and represents a payment from municipal funds of 86,488 euros. The second, concerns the Zentral Center and involves a 1,494,533euro payment.

Cabildo bids for a coastal facelift
TENERIFE Cabildo is hoping to get more funding to improve the Island’s coastline, appealing for funds from the regional and central government. The aim is to get enough dosh to start a new project next
year, which will spark improvements over the next decade. Ministers are seeking a 100-million-euro investment for more than 130 separate operations, spread throughout Tenerife. Some 138 coastal points have been iden-
tified at the moment by the Government as being in need of action - the last coastal upgrading programme was in 2002. The project will, calculates the Cabildo, generate 1,500 direct jobs, and it is hoped
that the initiative will be part of the 2016 State Budget. This would see the rehabilitation of the beach of Martianez, in Puerto de la Cruz, and Santa Cruz’s Valleseco beach, among other plans.
Tenerife has 358km of perimeter shoreline: more than 57% of the coast is steep, just 4% comprises sandy beaches, while 12% are crook beaches. The rest of the coast is occupied by coastal shallows.
Given this situation, and the rocky nature of the coast, the Cabildo has committed to operations to adapt the orographic (change in atmospheric conditions) and coastline with more access, tide pools and coastal trails.
Ring road is on No work, no income, no hope! the right track “EVERYONE understands that the No.1 priority on the roads is the completion of the ring road,” said Cabildo president Carlos Alonso at a meeting of all Tenerife mayors and regional government heads.
The purpose of the meeting was to try to reach a final funding agreement. Alonso, speaking with the media afterwards, put the focus on the “Pact for Tenerife” and the fact that there was funding in the State Budget for 2016. “15 million euros have been set aside, and this meeting showed that we have a message of unity, and the agreed document is creating the necessary result,” he said.
In addition, he stressed that the new infrastructure will lead to job opportunities being generated in the South, which can also be used by people in the North, while tourism will move easily between the different areas of the island as traffic is reduced. “The agreement is between the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo and the State, so the work can advance as quickly as possible,” said Alonso. Of the infrastructure, for which an estimated 300m euros are required, it will have the longest tunnel in the Canaries - linking El Tanque and Santiago del Teide - Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo, signed the documentation, saying: “It’s a meeting which, I think, can make history.”
THE fundamental recovery in the country’s economy is hardly benefiting Spain’s long-term unemployed.
That’s because there are 1.2 million Spanish workers who have not been employed for the last four years or more. This is the stark reality of Spain’s unemployment status, according to the latest figures from the Active Population Survey (EPA). Since the crisis began in 2008, when a global downturn was compounded by the collapse of Spain’s booming real estate market, the ranks of the longterm jobless have multiplied by 12. The situation is particularly drastic for 180,000 of them because they are living in households which are not receiving any kind of income at all, either generated by them or by other family members.
Spain’s unemployment plight hit historic highs in 2013, with nearly 6.3m workers without jobs. Since then, the figure has fallen by more than a million. Practically all sectors have benefited from the improved situation, except the long-term unemployed. The latest EPA figures show that 1,201,459 people have not had a job since the start of January 2011 at least. This data says a lot about the crisis in Spain and its duration. It also serves to illustrate perfectly the difficulties the unemployed face: to return to work once they
have been out of the job market for a long time. The length of the crisis in Spain and the lack of opportunities is reflected in the data. At the beginning of the first recession, in mid-2008, just 7.3% of the unemployed - 115,229 workers - had been out of work for more than a year. By 2011, the number of those who had been out of work for more than four years was barely 6% of the total. The latest data, covering the second quarter of 2015, shows that nearly one in every four unemployed (23.4%) has been without a job for four years or more.
To deal with the situation, Enrique Negueruela, a researcher for labour union CCOO, suggests “very powerful employment policies and a lot of investment”. He argues that the government has wasted a lot of time in recent years, and that the active policies “are inexistent,” and that those that do exist are using funds in an incorrect manner. “More than 1.5 million jobs from the construction sector have been destroyed,” he says. “There are many unemployed workers from this sector and there are still courses on offer to train carpenters from scratch. It doesn’t make sense - this money is being thrown away.” Negueruela also argues that the long-term unemployed should be protected with higher subsidies. “Only one in every five people who is out of work receives any kind of assistance,” he says. “That’s where the pockets of poverty lie.”

Heath now caught in sex-abuse radar
The editor says...
Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Dishing dirt is so easy on the dead IT’S August and we are now in the middle of summer. It’s darker in the mornings, the evenings are a little more sticky and in the media world, it’s the silly season.
The time of the year when “soft” stories get more coverage than they really should. With the MPs on the sort of holiday only teachers can truly enjoy, the national newspapers are left with one-off events, weather and a bit of gossip to fill their reduce number of pages. A prime example is the coverage of the slaying of Cecil the lion. As sad a story as it is, it’s still just the loss of one wild animal. It has not been the biggest of stories here in Spain because proper news continues to flow. As you’ve been reading, the politicians in Spain are having just a few days off as the business of re-election needs to be addressed. In Britain, the only political story this
week has been the ongoing allegations surrounding former Prime Minister Ted Heath. Those of a certain age will tell you that there have always been rumours about Heath, and now the floodgates have opened. Let’s see what the police do from here, and comment should be reserved for when all the facts have come out. But what is certain is that in the same way entertainers were in the spotlight a few years ago for their conduct, now the focus has shifted to those who were in power. The key to all this is evidence. Britain has very strict laws, maybe the toughest in the world when it comes to libel. Freedom of speech only goes so far. It’s interesting that the stories about Jimmy Savile and now Ted Heath have come out only after their passing. It’s the first law of Fleet Street. You can’t libel the dead. Law No.2? The truth will always out. Especially in a quiet month.

NO fewer than FIVE police forces are investigating claims by people who say they were abused by former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath.
Detectives in Wiltshire, London, Kent, Jersey and Kent and Hampshire are probing sex-abuse allegations linked to late Conservative leader. A Hampshire police spokesman said: “We are investigating allegations; we have nothing further to add at this stage. “Please call the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000 or email help@nspcc.org.uk as they have dedicated staff in place to deal with victims, or if you have information that may help police, please call us via 101.” Wiltshire Police sparked initial inquiries, appealing on Monday for potential victims or witnesses to come forward after a retired senior detective claimed previous allegations had been hushed up. A spokeswoman for Wiltshire Police said: “The investigation team will be reviewing the information and following up any lines of enquiry as a result. “In addition, the NSPCC will continue to take
calls via their helpline on 0808 800 5000. They will be referring any information through Operation Hydrant to the relevant force, including to Wiltshire Police. “We continue to appeal to anyone who has information or may have been a victim of child sex abuse to come forward.” The spokeswoman was unable to confirm how many people had made contact, and the “validity” of the calls was not yet known. They have received a mixture of “intelligence” and “third-party” calls, she added. Jersey Police, who launched the child-abuse investigation after the death of Jimmy Savile, have included Sir Edward in its long-running probe Operation Whistle, an inquiry into historic abuse on the island. A spokeswoman for the force said: “Sir Edward Heath does feature as
part of Operation Whistle, currently investigating historical allegations of abuse in Jersey.” Officers said Operation Whistle began against a backdrop of increased reports of historic abuse since Jimmy Savile’s death in 2011. And 2014 saw the launch of the independent Jersey Care Inquiry, looking into allegations of widespread abuse in the island’s care-homes. Police said in June that the Jersey operation had six investigators looking at 45 suspects, some of whom are dead or as yet unidentified, with 13 “people of public prominence”. Jersey’s involvement came just after Scotland Yard revealed its child sex-ring investigation, Operation Midland, was also looking into the former Prime Minister. Sir Edward’s name was dramatically linked to historic paedophile claims on Monday, when the police watchdog announced an inquiry into allegations by the former detective that a prosecution against an individual was shelved after a threat was made to “expose” the late Prime Minister. A woman in charge of a brothel had been set to stand trial, but said she would expose him, according to reports.
An alleged victim said this week he was preyed on by Sir Edward in 1961 as a child after he ran away from home. The man, now 65, added he was “fobbed off” and branded a “fantasist” when he told social workers. Wiltshire Police, following the retired detective’s complaint, called in the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). In a statement on the IPCC website, the watchdog said: “It is alleged that a criminal prosecution was not pursued, when a person threatened to expose that Sir Edward Heath may have been involved in offences concerning children. “In addition to this allegation, the IPCC will examine whether Wiltshire Police, subsequently, took any steps to investigate these claims.” The IPCC is also looking into whether Wiltshire Police followed up the claim in the Nineties against Sir Edward, who was Prime Minister between 1970-1974, The Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation said: “We welcome the investigation by Wiltshire Police, which we wholeheartedly believe will clear Sir Edward’s name, and we will co-operate fully with the police in their inquiries.”
Spain’s big drones’ plan SPAIN’S Defence Ministry will next year have drones at its disposal, which can fly for periods of more than 24 hours, and above altitudes of 10,000 metres. It has included a 25meuro item in its 2016 budget, for the “acquisition of the RPAS, unmanned air system, for joint use by the armed forces”. And it will cost the Ministry a total of 171m euros between 2016 and 2020. The Government de-
partment has its eyes on four drones, with two ground-control stations - one fixed, another mobile. It has chosen the MQ-9 Reaper, from US firm General Atomics, and the Heron TP, from Israel Aerospace Industries, with Spanish technology company Indra as their domestic partner. While Defence Ministry chiefs will be responsible for the system, because it is a joint programme, the Air Force is mainly interested in the Reaper
- also known as the Predator B. This model is already used by the UK, France, Italy and Holland, which will enable the countries to share procedural knowledge, or even act together in operations. Spain already counts on mini-drones, such as the Raven. They weigh less than 15kg, have a range of 50km and have been deployed by its forces in Afghanistan. Defence chiefs plan to use the unmanned
aircraft with radar systems only. But right now, Spain lacks operational or strategic drones, such as those that can fly above commercial airliner routes, weigh several tons and take off and land like conventional aircraft. While the Spanish drones on order can be equipped with bombs and missiles, the Defence Ministry is planning to use them with radar systems and other surveillance equipment only.

Cecil slaughter leads to a ‘trophies’ ban
British shipwreck diver found dead AN unnamed British diver has been found dead inside the shipwreck of a British steamship in Spain, sunk by a German U-boat during the First World War.
The unnamed 50-year-old’s body was discovered after a five-hour search by specialist police divers, in the submerged wreck of SS Stanfield in a marine reserve near La Manga sports resort. The deceased, understood to be a diving instructor, lost contact with three other divers - all thought to be British - with whom he accompanied on Tuesday morning. A major air and sea search ended with the discovery of his body at around 4.30pm local time. The 120-metre-long vessel, a favoured attraction for divers in the area, lies nearly 200 feet below the sea at the northern point of the Islas Hormigas marine park, in southeast Spain. It was torpedoed in 1916 and hit the sea-bed bow first, splitting open. The diver was wellknown in the area because he visited every summer with his family The submerged ship, one of several in the area, is described as a paradise for wreck divers because it is close to the ancient port city of Cartagena, which has been
the site of active trading for more than 3,000 years. It has also been an important military base for the past 2,000 years and continues to be a major naval base today. David Alcazar, spokesman for the Murcia Region Dive Centres, said the four men were using equipment which regulated their oxygen supply, depending on their depth, and meant they had to return to the surface every so often. The Brit divers noticed their companion was missing during one of their returns to the surface around midday. Mr Alcazar said: “Investigators will determine what has happened because the spot where the divers were is outside the recreational diving area.” In another tragedy, yachtsman Philip Walwyn died after being swept out to sea in Cornwall, while setting off for an attempt on his 17th transatlantic crossing at the age of 68. It was to be his final effort, but his 40ft boat was discovered bobbing about, unmanned, in the harbour at Coverack Cove, a fishing port in Cornwall. Rescue teams scrambled boats and the coast guard helicopter, which pulled him from the water and flew him to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
THREE major airline companies, Delta, United and American Airlines, have banned the shipment of big-game trophies following the illegal killing of Zimbabwe lion Cecil.
They are adamant they will no longer transport the remains of lions, rhinoceros, leopards, elephants or buffalos, but have so far not given an official reason. Delta, which flies direct to a
number of African cities, was subjected to an online petition to ban such shipments. American Airlines and United fly to fewer subSaharan cities than Delta. but United tweeted that its decision was “effective immediately”, company spokesman Charles Hobart saying: “We felt it made sense to do so.” Cecil, a major tourist attraction in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, was shot illegally in July by US dentist Wa l t e r
Palmer of Minnesota. Zimbabwe is seeking his extradition, and that of a Pennsylvania doctor named as Jan Casimir Seski, who is suspected of killing a lion in April. Palmer, understood to have paid about £32,000 to hunt Cecil in Hwange National Park, says he thought the hunt was legal and was unaware Cecil was protected. But the heartless killing triggered a huge online backlash. On Monday, Delta would not tell journalists why it made its decision: nor would it detail h o w
many hunting trophies it has transported in recent years. Instead, it issued a brief statement saying: “Effective immediately, Delta will officially ban shipment of all lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo trophies worldwide as freight.” Its announcement came as several other airlines indicated that they are - or will soon be - stopping the transport of all trophy-hunting kills. Yet as recently as May, long before the Cecil controversy, Delta said it would continue to allow such shipments.
La Palma reigns as driest island! LA PALMA was the driest territory in Spain from June 2014 to the same month this year, says the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which means the island is the only place in the country in official drought.
And the situation has not changed because, in the last month there has been no rainfall, at least in the area where the agency conducts its tests: the airport of Villa de Mazo. The island is 2½ points below what Aemet says is “normal” - a limit where the rest of the Canary Islands is found - except Lanzarote, where it has rained more than anywhere else in the archipelago. The AEMET data was
presented as part of a long-term weather report which goes to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment. The AFE provides the financial support necessary to invest in transport infrastructure and water storage in the island, and it has safeguards to ensure the water demand is met. The AEMET maps show that the lack of rainfall on the island has been gradual, until
the last 18 months or, at most, two years. The drought is causing restrictions on watering crops and that concern is growing among farmers. The Ministry of Environment revealed that the lack of rain in La Palma goes back decades. Between 1971 and 2000, the average annual rainfall on the island was 324.7 millimetres (1mm equals one litre of water per square me-
tre), whereas in 2014 it reached just 261.1. It did not rain at all in June, and rainfall in July and August was also scarce in 2014. In March, May and October, there was less than half the usual, just as occurred in November. But the bottom line of 2014 could be much worse had it not been for the December rainfall, which doubled the average of the previous year to reach 145.2mm.

Water waste of our money
TENERIFE is leaking. Literally! The public water system in Los Llanos de Aridane is like a sieve - 75% of its water is lost which, experts estimate, is “600,000 euros the taxpayers are losing every year.”
After meeting with Mariano Hernandez, the Councillor in charge
of the Island’s water system, a report out this week is quite damning. It states: “The lack of interest in implementing proposals that will solve the problem is disappointing. Over a year ago, we raised this with the now Mayor, Noelia Garcia Leal, and advised her that emergency work was required in the supply network. “We wanted to hire a technician to analyse the overall state of the network. But there is still no plan to improve
the efficiency of the network.” The report continues: “The area does not have the services of a skilled worker, engaged in finding solutions. They seem to be waiting for all this to be solved by the Island Water Board.” For their part, the Bureau of the Water of Los Llanos has countered, saying: “An initiative by the local government will be offered, and we want to participate and help improve this dire situation.”
Poris party leaves residents shocked THE community of the small coastal village of El Poris de Abona, in the municipality of Arico, have not had the best of weeks.
On Sunday morning, they rose from their beds with a nasty surprise. The streets were blocked by the rubbish left from the previous night’s flash party, which followed a Saturday night fiesta. Photographs of piles of waste, and doors covered in urine, circulated through social networks from early in the morning, generating many comments by angry residents. “The barbarians arrived in El Poris” … “Embarrassing, I had to run away” ... “Shameful” ... “The people in this town are disgusted” ... “I couldn’t walk my dog for all the mess”. These are some of the comments posted on
forums, Twitter and Facebook. The Fifth Summer fiesta began at about 2pm on Saturday and at first, it attracted just 200 people - but the turn-out increased rapidly! The event has snowballed in recent years and its popularity hit new heights last weekend. Jairo Cedrés, the man in charge and head of the festival’s promotion company, said: “We did not expect so many people. “As an outdoor activity, we could not control the infrastructure. We recognise that it got out of hand. We apologise and promise that it will not happen again. I myself have apologised to the neighbours while helping to collect rubbish.” One of the main commitments of the festival, according to the official website, was “care for the environment”. It is believed that there was a clean-up team
booked for 5am, but they were overwhelmed when they reached the village. The municipal government will now consider what action to take. The anticipated attendance was of 2,0003,000 people, but, according to official data provided by the Cabildo, at 7.30pm, there were 7,500 people. Most were dancing and enjoying the party on the board-walks, and it seemed to be a raging success. But the after-parties got a bit out of hand with loud music and littering, but the police say there was no notable incident to record. The event ended at 1am and the main problems incurred because the area was far too small for so many people. There were hardly any toilet or rubbish-collation facilities, which led to the “surprise” encountered by residents on Sunday morning.

jobs, Farewell to final More jobs, jobs! Dambuster pilot PROOF that Spain’s economic recovery is ever-strengthening comes with the news that service companies last month hired staff at the fastest rate for eight years.
LES MUNRO, last of the legendary Dambuster pilots, has died in his native New Zealand at the age of 96 following heart problems.
The New Zealand Bomber Command Association announced that Sqn Ldr Munro had passed away in hospital on Monday. The World War Two Dambusters’ operation flew from RAF Scampton, near Lincoln, in 1943 and successfully used “bouncing bombs”, devised by Barnes Wallis, to attack German dams. Of the 133 crew, just 77 returned, and there are now only two surviving crew members of the Dambusters’ incredibly brave missions - Canadian former front-gunner Fred Sutherland and British former bombaimer George Johnson. line Sqn Ldr Munro’s aircraft was hit by flak, but he managed to limp home after the hit had destroyed communications in his Lancaster bomber over the Netherlands. Dave Homewood, of the New Zealand Association, described Les Munro as a “down-toearth man” who was “very modest about what he did during the war”. He added: “I think
he was pretty proud to have been part of the Dambusters, although he was disappointed he never got to drop his weapon. “He went on to be a flight commander, and flew a lot of important operations after the dam raid, although these are often forgotten because the Dambusters were world-renowned.” Sqn Ldr Munro, patron of the NZ Bomber Command, was still flying at the age of 95 and had even co-piloted an Avro Anson plane in January, said Mr Homewood. New Zealand Prime Minister John Key’s Twitter tribute read: “Really sad to hear of Les Munro’s death; New Zealand has lost a remarkable man who led a remarkable life.” In a BBC interview on the 70th anniversary of the Dambusters raid, Sqn Ldr Munro said he had not worried about the dangers of the mission. “I approached most operations with a
thought, ‘If I’m going to cop it, so be it,’” he said. Earlier this year, he put his medals up for auction to help pay for the upkeep of the Bomber Command Memorial in London. A day before the sale, they were bought for £75,000 by British peer Lord Ashcroft, who promptly donated them to the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland. On the night of 16th May 1943, 19 bombers left RAF Scampton in three waves. The first headed to the Mohne and the Eder Dams, the second and third to the Sorpe dam. Sqn Ldr Munro had been briefed to attack the Sorpe Dam by flying parallel to its wall and releasing the bomb from the lowest possible height, while flying at 180mph. The Sorpe Dam was damaged - but the Mohne and Eder Dams destroyed, flooding the Ruhr valley and killing an estimated 1,300 people, mostly civilians. The subsequent film
The Dam Busters, starring Michael Redgrave and Richard Todd, was released in 1955 and still resonates with people who saw the black-andwhite classic war film. And who can forget that memorable Dam Busters March theme?
It looks as though we are heading for a bumper tourism season with new business also picking up, and Markit’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) survey of service companies, released on Wednesday, hit 59.7 in July - up from 56.1 in June. It marked the 21st consecutive month of the index rising above the 50 line, separating growth from contraction. The employment sub-index rose to 55.3. And in the AprilJune period, Spain’s economic output ex-
panded at the fastest quarterly rate since 2007. Record numbers of tourist arrivals in Spain in the first half of 2015 are heightening expectations of a busy season for the services sector, which should feed into thirdquarter growth. It is also helping to create jobs at a time when Spanish unemployment is still at 22.4% - among Europe’s highest rates. “We can expect to see further reductions in the unemployment rate in coming months,” said Andrew Harker, senior economist at Markit. “This, hopefully, will feed through into improving demand.” Services companies increased their prices for the second month in a row, said Markit, as their own costs increased, including staff expenses and especially in the hotel and restaurant sector.

Milk deal turns sour! THE cheap price of milk in Britain’s supermarkets reflects the price they pay to suppliers, say dairy farmers, who are seething.
So much so that they have been clearing supermarket shelves by buying milk in bulk and giving it away over the past few days. They maintain they are being paid less than it costs to produce the milk, and some have gone out of business because shops have reduced prices. But supermarkets insist there is no link between the price of milk on the shelves and what farmers are paid. West Midlands dairy farmer Michael Oakes, from the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), said: “We’ve got to the point where we’re getting an unsustainable price for our milk. “I’m getting paid 24p a litre, and it’s costing me 28p to produce. So we thought we’d go along to the retailer. We’ve bought the milk and we’re going to give it away to the consumer and explain why.” Graeme Kilpatrick, chairman of the NFU
Scotland’s milk committee, said: “I receive many calls from affected dairy farmers, and it can be tough going mentally. “My family have been in farming for several generations, and the current crisis has had a major impact on our cash-flow.” Protests have taken place at supermarkets in Kilmarnock and Ayr; at Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda in Coleraine, Northern Ireland; Morrisons in Bideford, Devon, and Bude, Cornwall, and at Asda in Telford. Dairy farmer Bryce Cunningham, who
Could a stag beetle be your favourite?
AN online poll has been set up by the Royal Society of Biology to find the UK’s favourite insect. The group wants to emphasise the “vital” environmental role played by more than 20,000 species found in Britain. It also wants to highlight the threats they face from pesticide use, habitat destruction and climate change.
The RSB experts have come up with a shortlist of 10, including the small tortoiseshell butterfly, the emperor dragonfly and the stag beetle. The seven-spot ladybird, garden tiger moth, marmalade hoverfly, black garden ant, bufftailed bumblebee, large bee-fly and green shield bug are also in the running.
helped organise protests in Scotland, said the current situation was “extremely difficult”. He added: “At the moment, we’re being being paid 15p a litre for every litre of milk that we produce. It’s costing me 24p to produce this milk,”
A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “Our retail price is not related to the price we pay our farmers. Our milk prices are competitive for our customers, while also paying our dedicated dairy farmers a fair price that protects them against volatile mar-
kets.” Darren Blackhurst, Morrisons Group commercial director, said: “We try to pass on lower prices to our customers wherever possible. But we recognise that, due to reduced global demand, this has created an oversupply of British milk, creating difficult conditions for many dairy farmers.” Asda said the price farmers get is set independently and there is no link between retail prices and farm-gate
prices (the price direct from the producer). Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, said shops were not to blame. “The global market at the moment is oversupplied,” he said. “We haven’t seen the pickup in demand that we might have expected from places like China and India, which were growing quite rapidly. “So until that picks up, there will be problems. But it’s absolutely wrong to look at retailers here. Retailers are actually doing the right thing - they are paying the best prices - but these are global conditions outside their control.” British dairy organisation AHDB Dairy said the the average UK farm-gate price was 24.06p per litre in May, a decrease of a quarter over 12 months.
Breakthrough may help cancer victims PA N C R E AT I C cancer could be detected much earlier much earlier by a simple urine test, which has has been developed by scientists.
This form of cancer is often very advanced by the time it is diagnosed - and only 3% of patients are alive five years afterwards. But the researchers have discovered a protein “signature” present only in people with the disease. Cancer charities welcomed the study, published in Clinical Cancer Research, saying a test was “much needed”. Nearly 9,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the UK every year, and it has the lowest fiveyear survival rate of any common cancer - one that has hardly improved in 40 years. More than 80% of peo-
ple with the disease are diagnosed when it has already spread, so they are not eligible for surgery to remove the tumour, which is the only potential cure right now. Those at higher risk include people with a family history of the cancer, heavy smokers, obese people and people over 50 who are newly diagnosed with diabetes. The scientists who developed the test, from the UK and Spain, hope that if its early promise is realised, then it could be possible to diagnose patients much earlier and offer them treatment. There has been little progress in improving pancreatic cancer survival, and innovative approaches are needed The researchers looked at almost 500 urine samples: just under 200 were from patients with pancreatic cancer, 92 from patients with chronic pancreatitis and 87 from healthy volunteers.
The rest of the samples were from patients with benign and cancerous liver, and gallbladder conditions. Of 1,500 proteins found in the urine samples, three - LYVE1, REG1A and TFF1 - were seen to be at much higher levels in the pancreatic cancer patients, providing a “protein signature” that could identify the most common form of the disease. The signature was found to be 90% accurate, and patients with chronic pancreatitis were found to have lower levels of the same three proteins. More research is now planned, and scientists will focus particularly on people whose genes put them at particular risk of pancreatic cancer. Co-author Prof Nick Lemoine, of the Barts Cancer Institute, said: “It’s really exciting because, for the first time, we might be able to bring forward the window of opportunity for patients with pancreat-
ic cancer - from something that is advanced and late stage to something that is early stage and potentially curable by surgery. “Patients are usually diagnosed when the cancer is already at a terminal stage, but if diagnosed at stage 2, the survival rate is 20%, and at stage 1, the survival rate for patients with very small tumours can increase up to 60%.” The Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund said: “This is an exciting finding because an early diagnostic test was much needed.” Fiona Osgun, of Cancer Research UK, said: “At the moment, we’re a long way from knowing if this research could lead to a test that would help detect pancreatic cancer at an early stage, or who that test might benefit. “But research like this is vital as there’s been little progress in improving survival for pancreatic cancer, and innovative approaches are needed.”

G I B R A LTA R ’ S government is at loggerheads with its Spanish counterparts again, having reported a “serious incursion” on Saturday evening.
It says a Spanish state vessel attempted to assert its authority, not only inside British Gibraltar Territorial Waters (BGTW), but within a few metres of the shoreline. At around 6.30pm, a Spanish customs vessel (SVA), the Aguila IV, chased a Gibraltarregistered pleasure boat within BGTW and inside the demarcated buoys at Camp Bay. The pleasure boat had been stationary, about one nautical mile off Europa Point, when it was circled by the Aguila IV, which had approached from the Bay, making its way past the North Mole. It had earlier been given the United Nation Convention on the Law of Sea (UNCLOS) warning over radio and did not respond. The Spanish crew, when approached by launches from RGP and GDP and by a Navy

RHIB, claimed that the pleasure boat had been off Estepona earlier and had failed to stop when asked to do so. Having been informed that it had no jurisdiction inside BGTW, the Aguila IV was then escorted into Spanish waters. The two occupants of the pleasure boat later claimed that they were fishing off Europa Point when the SVA vessel had requested their documentation. They had moved into Camp Bay and called for assistance. “This is another glaringly obvious example of a Spanish state vessel attempting to assert its authority well inside our territorial limits,” said Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia. “It could hardly be clearer that the vessel had no jurisdiction to operate at Europa Point, and even less
just a few metres from a beach at Camp Bay.” He added: “Quite apart from the serious political issues raised by this matter, it is also dangerous for a state vessel to operate in this
way inside a demarcated bathing area. This is illegal in the face of internationally-recognised Laws of the Sea.” This latest development adds to the a l rea dy- c o m pl i c a t ed

Drop of the hard stuff! CHINESE distillers have given new meaning to the term “a stiff drink” by adding Viagra to thousands of bottles of spirits and telling customers it had “health-preserving qualities”. More than 5,300 bottles of alcohol were seized by food safety officials in the southern city of Liuzhou. They also found packets of a white powder called Sildenafil, better known as the anti-impotence drug Viagra. Police in the Guangxi region are now inves-
tigating two distillers, and the Liuzhou Food and Drug Administration said the powder was added to three types of “baijiu” - a strong, clear spirit which is China’s most popular drink. They also said the haul was worth up to £72,000. Doctors recommend that adults requiring prescription should
take just one dose of Viagra a day, with a lower dose for over-65s. China continues to face widespread food safety problems. In June, police in cities across the country seized more than 100,000 tonnes of smuggled meat, some of which was several years old. And in 2008, the nation was outraged when around 300,000 people were affected and at least six babies died after consuming milk adulterated with melamine.

cause problems for their fishing industry, and, shortly afterwards, imposed strict controls at the border with Gibraltar. Britain and Gibraltar argued that these checks were politically motivated, but the European Commission ruled that the border checks had not infringed European law. Europe Minister David Lidington said last year: “According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the waters around Gibraltar are indisputably British territorial waters, under United Kingdom sovereignty, in which only the United Kingdom has the right to exercise jurisdiction. “Her Majesty’s Government takes a grave view of any attempt by Spain to exert authority or control within British Gibraltar territorial waters, and it considers such incursions as a violation of our sovereignty.” He added: “Her Majesty’s Government will continue to take whatever action we consider necessary to uphold British sovereignty and the interests of Gibraltar, its people, its security and economy.”

‘Bungee death’ pair are charged

Spain’s Picasso ‘treasure’ saved by French customs
A PICASSO masterpiece valued at 25m euros (£17.5m) was considered a cultural treasure by Spanish authorities, who barred it from being exported.
THE death of a young South London woman while bungee-jumping in Spain has led to two people being charged with manslaughter. Kleyo De Abreu, 23, was killed on 21st July in Lanjaron, Granada, while jumping from the Tablate Bridge. The Guardia Civil has charged the owner of an adventure company and a bungee-jump supervisor with her death. Police investigators found there was miscommunication between the supervisor and Miss De Abreu, who jumped before the equipment had been made safe. One supervisor had been left to monitor 14 people taking part in the bungee jump, which was “not enough” to guarantee customer safety, the police discovered. Their report said the monitor’s role was to secure the ropes and harness before authorising the person to jump. But after attaching the harness to Ms De Abreu and moving away to tighten the ropes, it was
understood that there was a “lack of communication or understanding”, and Ms De Abreu jumped before being told to do so. The police report stated: “This jump, performed before the ropes were properly tensioned, could be the cause of the accident.” Investigators believed the monitor “did not execute the function with due care and precautions.” There are two bridges at the site - a modern bridge from which bungee jumps are launched, featuring an ancient Roman bridge underneath. It is believed that Ms De Abreu hit the lower bridge, causing fatal injuries, after jumping. Her father, Bernard Atwell, described his daughter as “sweet, caring, bubbly and focused” and added that relatives were “in shock” over her death. Kleyo, an aspiring fashion student from Brixton, had been visiting her aunt in Spain, who was watching when the tragedy occurred.
But it was seized from a boat docked at Corsica, according to French authorities, following an attempt to export the painting, Head of a Young Woman, to Switzerland last Thursday. It “drew the attention of French officials”, said the country’s customs authority in a statement, its agents on the French island boarding the vessel the following day. The ship’s captain was only able to present two documents regarding the work of art, said the statement - one of which was a May 2015 Spanish court judgement labelling the painting a work of art and ordering that
it not be taken out of the country. The painting, which French customs said was valued at “more than 25m euros”, is owned by Jaime Botin, a well-known Spanish banker, whose family was involved in the Santander banking group. The 79-year-old, once vice-chairman of the banking giant, was not
on board the vessel, which was owned by the company and flying a British flag, said a customs’ spokesman. He said the export demand was not in Botin’s name, either. An export demand, filed for the painting in December 2012 to move it to London, was opposed by Spain’s Culture Minister.
And this year, a Spanish court sided with the authorities and declared the work of art “unexportable” on the grounds that it was of “cultural interest” and could not leave the country. French customs officials are now awaiting an official Spanish request to recover the painting.
Teenager dies after gay-pride stabbing A TEENAGE girl died after being stabbed during a gay pride parade in Jerusalem by a homophobic extremist.
Shira Banki, 16, who was knifed in the back, was one of six people attacked during last Thursday’s event. She later died in hospital and her organs, said a
spokesman, would now be donated to help others. Her attacker was later identified as Yishai Schlissel, an ultraOrthodox Jewish man who had been released from prison just three weeks earlier and had spoken out against the parade. Schlissel had been serving a 10-year jail sentence after attacking a gay pride parade
in 2005, injuring three people. Shira’s family said in a statement that the “magical” teenager had been “murdered because she was a happy 16-year-old - full of life and love - who came to express her support for her friends’ right to live as they choose”. They added: “For no good reason and, because of evil, stupidity and negligence, the life
of our beautiful flower was cut short. Bad things happen to good people, and a very bad thing happened to our amazing girl.” Jerusalem’s residents are mostly conservative in their views about religion - be it Islam, Christianity or Judaism - but, although previous parades have prompted threats, violence towards homosexual people are rare.

Police could join forces SOME of Britain’s 43 forces might have to amalgamate because budget cuts could leave them with no alternative.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) told Sky News police must make “fundamental changes” to save cash. The NPCC’s Chair, Sara Thornton, said in a statement.”Most would agree that fewer forces is the best option, but if the desire is to maintain 43, then forces will need to collaborate more.” She added: “That collaboration process would be helped by there being a new statutory provision that allows forces that want to work together to amalgamate.” The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners estimates that up to £300m could be saved within a few years if forces collaborate in the purchase of equipment. Nottinghamshire Con-
stabulary is one force leading the way in cooperation with some of its East Midlands’ neighbours. The force, which has a strength of just over 2,000 officers, has begun sharing some specialist services with Northamptonshire and Derbyshire police. The three forces have also set up a joint procurement division to
buy equipment like uniforms. The man in charge of that programme told Sky News it saved £3m in its first year of operation. Ronnie Adams, commercial director of the East Midlands Strategic Commercial Unit (EMSCU), said the culture of different equipment for different forces needed to be addressed if chief constables were
serious about driving through more efficient practices. “When I came to join the police, one of the things I couldn’t understand was that there were 43 police forces in England and Wales, and those 43 police forces have got 43 different uniforms,” he said. “It’s crazy. I can understand why it’s happened. But it has been
driven because forces have been looking after their uniforms locally. Really, we just need to have a single specification of police uniform.” Police forces in England and Wales currently spend around £1.7bn on equipment annually - 13% of their total budget. But the price for similar pieces of equipment can vary considerably. For standard issue handcuffs, the cost can range from £14 to £43. The disparity is even wider for policeissue boots - from £25 to £114. Paddy Tipping, Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, is part of a nationwide steering group examining ways in which forces can co-operate more closely. It concluded that potential savings of £300m could be achieved through greater coordination on procurement. “Forces know they have got to do it,” said the Crime Commissioner. “Chief Constables who like to be, dare
I say it, barons in their own kingdom, know they want to protect the local policing, and the penny has dropped.” While backing the proposed collaboration measures, the NPCC, formerly the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), warned there may not be enough to help forces deal with the budget cuts. The NPCC’s Sara Thornton said: “We’ve dealt with cuts of 25% in Government grants in the last five years and are set for similar following the Comprehensive Spending Review in the Autumn. “We’re likely to have lost around 70,000 police posts by 2020. This means we have to make fundamental changes to the way we police or we will fail in our service to the public and unacceptably stress our staff. “Improving the way we procure equipment and services will save us some money, as will sharing more within and outside policing. But they won’t solve the problem alone.”

It was thought the minutes would reflect that at least one member of the MPC voted

EUROZONE inflation held steady in July as falling energy prices offset increases in industrial goods, and the annual inflation rate stayed at 0.2%.
That’s the outcome of a flash estimate from Eurostat, the EU’s statistics agency, which saw energy prices fall 5.6%, compared with a 5.1% drop in June, while food, alcohol and tobacco prices rose 0.9%. Eurostat also said that for the third month, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 11.1% in June. But James Howat, European Economist at Capital Economics,

said the figures were not positive: “Worryingly, surveys of employment intentions have weakened recently, suggesting that the labour market recovery will remain pretty weak,” he said. He also pointed out that the European Central Bank (ECB) still had a lot of work to do to hit its inflation target of “below, but close to, 2%”. In March, the ECB began a massive 1.1-trillion-euro bond buying programme in an attempt to stimulate the eurozone economy. Policy-makers spent much of last year in fear of deflation. The worry is that if price falls become entrenched, consumers and businesses will delay purchases and investment in the hope that prices will fall further.
for a rate increase later this year, or early in 2016 - which is supporting Sterling at the moment. However, UK Markit PMI figures were still short of average on Monday, which meant investors had to wait until yesterday to learn that interest rate has remained the same. Analysts at Standard & Poor (S & P) believe Spanish house prices will increase at approximately 2.5% over the rest of the year, with a similar boost in 2016. They anticipate further growth in the next 12 months and a forecast of 4% rise the following year. The credit-rating agency’s announcement follows Kyero.

Netflix offers one-year break for new parents NETFLIX, the video-streaming service which already offers its employees unlimited holidays if they meet their job requirements, is to give new parents fully-paid leave for a year.
The company, whose offer applies to its global workforce, from customer-service workers to the highest-paid software developers, announced the move in a blog post. It is a smart move because US tech firms are desperate to keep their main staff, with so many top-line positions around in the industry. Chief talent officer
Tawni Cranz said it enabled mums and dads to meet their commitments at home and in the workplace. “We want employees to have the flexibility and confidence to balance the needs of their growing families, without
worrying about work or finances,” she added. “Netflix’s continued success hinges on us competing for, and keeping, the most talented individuals in their field. “Experience shows that people perform
better at work when they’re not worrying about home. “This new policy, combined with our unlimited time off, allows employees to be supported during the changes in their lives and return to work more focused and dedicated.” The employee benefit is generous, even by the high standards of Silicon Valley, where free meals and other perks supplement lavish salaries in the fiercely-competitive battle for computer programmers and other technology workers. Google offers biological mothers up to 22 months of paid leave, while Apple gives 18 months. Facebook gives four months to both mothers and fathers.

The Wonder of Britain
Don't Miss...
Thursday 13th August, ITV1, 21.00 In episode four, Julia looks at our Royal story. Britain has an almost continuous monarchy stretching back over 1000 years, which give us a unique royal story that has shaped our national identity. Julia’s list reflects this long running royal soap opera and begins with the supposed home of legendary King Arthur. Real man or myth, the ruins at Tintagel mark the birthplace of our Royal story and here Julia learns the sword skills any Dark Age king would have needed. Next is Britain’s oldest and most famous royal building, The Tower of London. Here the thick walls have seen over a millennium of royal history, and Julia checks out the armour of one of our ‘biggest’ royals – Henry VIII. With greed and excess a running theme, Julia’s list includes the massive kitchen of Hampton Court where she cooks a meal fit for a king. Next stop is the over the top splendour of Brighton’s Royal Pavilion. Here the unique oriental design, mixed with tales of fabulous parties and huge excess, perfectly reflects the personality of the playboy Prince Regent, George IV. Julia’s next choice is the site where our most famous queen, Elizabeth I, chose duty over love. Kenilworth Castle is a glorious ruin and the place lovelorn Lord Robert Dudley tried, but failed, to win the heart of the Virgin Queen. Queen Victoria is best known for being the widow who was ‘not amused’, but Julia’s list includes a place associated with happier times, Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight. Here the joyful young queen fell in love and raised her family before Albert’s death. Julia’s final wonder embodies one of the things us Brits do best – a bit of pomp and pageantry. Going behind the scenes at the Household Cavalry, Julia discovers what it takes to prepare to parade in front of our present day Queen Elizabeth II.

Their goal is to secure the remarkable pieces of America’s past that are hidden inside these old structures before they are lost for ever. These salvaged vintage items include everything from doors and windows to mantelpieces, stairwells and bathtubs. Once they are recovered, these valuable pieces can be used to restore other historical buildings and add character to newer structures. In the first episode, Robert, Mike and their crew salvage items from Izard Farmhouse in Copper Hill, Virginia, which was initially built as a two-room cabin in 1892 and subsequently expanded to serve as a school and post office. The team removes a box bay window in one piece, and other key finds include a Dixie Oak stove and some vintage poplar wood. Mike also delivers a Victorian doorway to be used in a log cabin.
Dragons’ Den BBC2, 20:00 Series in which budding entrepreneurs pitch business ideas to multimillionaires. Dragons’ Den is back with three new multimillionaires ready to breathe fire into the Den. But will any of the businesses be to the Dragons’ tastes?

John Craven travels to Llandudno to look at what it takes to make a great summer holiday. He meets the farmer-turned-entrepreneur who’s breathing new life into Llandudno’s Victorian pier, strolls along the prom, has an ice cream and finds out why Llandudno has been a top destination since Victorian times. And, like generations before him, he takes the tram to the Great Orme - a tourist getaway that’s home to some of the country’s rarest flora and fauna. He joins the conservationists on the hunt for a rare butterfly - the silver-studded blue - meets the farmer whose herd has been chosen to help conserve the natural beauty of the Orme, then heads back down to town for the ultimate seaside treat. The team look back at other summer holiday ideas Countryfile has featured, including Ellie Harrison paddleboarding off the Dorset coast, Matt Baker taking a sightseeing ride on a motor trike, and Anita Rani walking part of the Pennine Way in its 50th anniversary year.

Christened ‘The Beast’ by Churchill, Tirpitz was Nazi Germany’s most powerful and dangerous battleship. Protected by an elite squadron of German fighters, it was seen as invincible. After 34 attempts to sink it in its Norwegian lair had failed, the RAF sent in the 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron and 9 Squadron, and in a spectacular raid on 14 November 1944 they slipped through German defences and sank Tirpitz. With eyewitness accounts from surviving RAF crew, one of the Luftwaffe fighter pilots and German sailors who were on Tirpitz that day, this Secret History documentary tells this extraordinary story from a uniquely intimate and personal perspective and offers intriguing evidence to explain the raid’s improbable success.

Twenty years have passed when we rejoin the friends in 1937. Duncan and Vanessa, now played by Rupert PenryJones (Spooks, Silk) and Eve Best (The Honourale Woman, Nurse Jackie) remain at Charleston Farmhouse, painting, living and loving alongside each other, along with Vanessa’s children Julian, Quentin and Angelica. Charleston remains an idyll, a ‘convent dedicated to art’ yet one seemingly under siege from the outside world. A defiant Julian announces his determination to fight against Franco in the Spanish civil war, while Angelica, who remains unaware of her true parentage, escapes to London to become an actress. While there she becomes close to Duncan and Vanessa’s old friend, David ‘Bunny’ Garnett. Vanessa’s worst fears are realised when Julian is killed in Spain. Unable to process her grief, she cuts herself off from those around her, with the exception of Virginia, by now enjoying huge public acclaim, who nurses her with great care and compassion. Cut off from her mother, Angelica finds herself falling in love with Bunny. Duncan and Vanessa are appalled. Not only is Bunny more than 20 years older than Angelica, he was the source of so much anguish in their early years living together at Charleston. Vanessa attempts to reach out to Angelica but her heavy-handed intervention only serves to push her daughter further away. As the Second World War rages, Virginia finds herself engulfed in mental turmoil while Vanessa and Duncan come face to face with the very human consequences of their own experiments in living.

Hello Campers ITV1, 16.00 With a sprinkling of light-hearted competition, the series will see five new couples head out to a different European campsite each week, with the aim of winning a £1000 prize. Over six weeks, the show will travel to Spain, France, Italy and Portugal with a new group of ‘happy campers’ arriving each week. On arrival, the couples have to set up camp, pitch their tents and meet their fellow holiday makers before carrying out camp duties and joining in for group activities such as ice cream making, parasailing, cheerleading and yoga. Each afternoon sees some healthy camp competition when each camp couple will be able to win points during allocated activities, with the losing couple having to clean camp that night. There will be nominated cooks whose task it is to rustle up some tasty grub on the campfire and another couple will be in charge of organising the camp entertainment, which will be judged and scored by their fellow campers. The remaining couples will take part in traditional, cultural activities like paella-making, flamenco dancing, sculpture or streetdance and will be judged by local experts. At the end of the week, the couple with the most points wins the cash prize.

Travel Guides ITV1, 21.00
Travel Guides is an entertaining new travel series that sends five ordinary British households to review some of the world’s most popular holiday destinations – from an all-inclusive in Tenerife to a five star hotel in Dubai. This week they hit Dubai, one of the fastest growing tourist destinations on earth. Over a million Brits flock here on holiday each year, tempted by year round sun and the glamorous five star lifestyle it offers. But this modern metropolis in the desert doesn’t appeal to everyone. Burnley bar owner Linda and her painter husband Pete find not only the hotels but their prices ‘out of this world’. Bikini clad model Riah can’t understand why Arabic women should have to ‘cover up’, and hairdressers Craig ChapmanBlackwell and Stuart McDonald are uncomfortable about travelling to a country where it’s illegal to be gay.

Love Your Garden ITV1, 20.00
This week Alan Titchmarsh and the garden makeover team are in Dorset creating an exciting garden for a young family coping with a terminal illness. Student Rachel (27) met Dorset farm worker Andrew (29) out clubbing six years ago and became an item instantly. The couple, were making plans for their future when Andrew had the shock diagnosis of bowel cancer – something very rare in someone so young. The couple postponed their wedding in order for Andrew to have treatment and faced the possibility that they may not be able to have children. Despite this, Lucas (known as their little miracle) was born – but another wedding had to be postponed. Andrew’s treatment continued but when he was told in October 2014 that his condition was now terminal the first thing on his bucket list was to finally marry the love of his life which he did in January 2015. Andrew’s battle is now becoming tougher but he’s determined to be around to forge memories with Rachel and his 18-month-old son Lucas. So Alan is more determined than ever to give them the garden that will let them do that. Alan’s idea for the Drakes is to give them an outdoor space that reflects Andrew’s love of the great outdoors and his passion for working with wood so he opts for a garden with a frontier-land theme. He and the team create a spectacular prairie inspired back yard of big scale rustic wood structures, agricultural motifs with craftsmanship and the spirit of adventure at its core.

7th August - 13th August 2015
Wednesda
BBC1, 20.00
With Cake week under their belts, the 11 remaining bakers must now prove themselves - with biscuits. The Signature Challenge is to create 24 biscotti. Twice baked, these Italian specialities have to be crammed with flavour with a crisp crunch. It’s a delicate balance between under-baked and bendy or over-baked and rock hard. Paul chooses the Technical Challenge, Arlettes, a labour intensive, reverse puff pastry biscuit from Southwest France. Wafer thin, flaky and swirled with cinnamon, delicious to eat but devilishly difficult to make. And finally the Showstopper is to create and build an edible biscuitbox filled with 36 biscuits of a different flavour. Judges Mary and Paul want to see the bakers exercise their creative muscles with clever construction and beautiful decoration whilst not forgetting that flavour is king. The pressure is on and the clock is ticking. Who will claim Star Baker and who will be leaving the Bake Off tent?

Exposure: Making the Grades ITV1, 22.40 “Because of Government policy, schools… are almost invited to manipulate controlled assessment marks in order for them to hit their targets, and if they hit targets they get money.” - Former chief examiner John Neild This new documentary in the Exposure current affairs strand investigates allegations of exam malpractice by some teachers and schools. Reporter Julie Etchingham hears concerns that increasing pressure on schools has resulted in the establishments dishonestly ramping up marks in order to push them up the league tables and get more money from the Government. Critics say that this ‘money-for-marks’ culture is piling on pressure to achieve unrealistic results - either by teachers over-marking or getting students to sit the same test again and again until the desired outcome is achieved. One former inspector says he has seen teachers and teaching assistants finishing coursework on behalf of students. And experts say the combination of league tables, Ofsted inspections, and financial penalties applied to schools which are not seen to be doing well have led to a change in teachers’ mindsets, leading them to focus on results over quality of education.

Who Do You Think You Are? BBC1, 21.00
Paul Hollywood is best known as a judge on The Great British Bake Off. He learned his trade at his father’s bakery where he worked as a teenager and has been baking ever since, progressing to become head baker at a number of hotels (including The Dorchester) before turning his talents to television. He lives in Kent with his wife Alex and their son. “Everyone wants to know where their family’s from. I know we’ve got family in Scotland and bits round the country, so what makes me tick? What’s my genetic structure, where did it come from? I’d be fascinated to find out. I felt close to my Grandad. I think it was just part of the way our family was. I know during the war he spent time in North Africa, and I know he spent time in Italy, Anzio, and that is pretty much it. To find out what he did, and what he went through, emotionally that will affect me but I’d love to find out.” Paul became very close to his maternal grandfather Norman (pictured) when his own parents divorced. He grew up near them in Wallasey, but despite this he knows little about his Grandfather’s life, and particularly his experiences during World War II. Paul remembers that his Grandfather had a facial tic, and wants to know if it was caused by his war-time service. Paul’s journey takes him first to North Africa. Norman had only just completed his training when he found himself in Tunisia as part of the Light Anti-Aircraft division tasked with protecting infantry from enemy air attack during a major Allied offensive to take Tunis from the Germans. Paul then travels to Italy where he discovers his Grandfather Norman was part of the landing force that became surrounded by German forces and trapped on the beaches at Anzio for four months, under constant aerial bombardment. Having gained an understanding of his Grandfather’s experiences during World War II, Paul travels to the Highlands of Scotland on the trail of his great, great, great, great, Grandfather – who he discovers has a very unusual – and demanding – job! “I always said to myself that I wouldn’t get emotional – it’s difficult to know that he was here. It winds me up that I can’t talk to him about it because I feel now, I feel closer to my Grandad now than I have since he died. He’s been here. I just want to talk to him about it and it’s so frustrating that I can’t.”

Very British Problems is a celebratory new show that sees some of Britain’s most famous faces share how they struggle against the endless capacity for social awkwardness which comes with being British. Narrated by Julie Walters, the show features contributions from James Corden, Jonathan Ross, Ruth Jones, Johnny Vegas, Vic Reeves, Paul Chowdhry, Nigel Havers, Freddie Flintoff, and insight from non-Brits Rich Hall and Aisling Bea. How can we be furious enough to tut, but shudder at the thought of complaining? Why do we spend so much of our lives apologising to inanimate objects?

Flockstars ITV1, 20.30
In the third episode of this knockout competition, the opening heats continue with two more Flockstars. Along with their four-legged friends, they enter the Flockstars’ showground, attempting to guide a flock of sheep around the trialling course in the quickest time and qualify for the next round. Stepping up to the plate this week are acclaimed actress and Coronation Street legend Wendi Peters alongside sheepdog Bill who go head-to-head with ten-time Paralympic Gold medallist Lee Pearson and his dog Skye. As training gets underway for Wendi, she struggles to form a bond with Bill and as the weeks pass, uses every trick in the book to get him onside. It is a case of one step forward and three steps back for the Corrie legend. Wendi explains: “Just when you think you’ve got it and you’ve cracked the voice, everything goes horrible wrong.”

TEAs’ nod to the Nineties The event is now in its ninth season, and the organisers always come up with a theme to go along with the awards. Last year, being the eighth, was obviously going to be the decade of distinct Eighties’ music - a play on words and a great 10 years of music from which to draw its theme. It seems that this

year’s event has used the seed of 2014’s success and decided to adopt the Nineties’ era. The TEAs show is the biggest thing on our entertainment calendar and creates so much attention on social media, radio stations and newspapers. It’s not just the entertainers who get involved but local businesses, tourists and residents, who all get in to the buzz of it. Some entertainers choose not to involve themselves with all the fuss and, for whatever reason, it is a personal choice. At the end of the day, the TEAs promote what is a unique circuit of entertainers who work so hard. The need to gain acknowledgement for an award is higher in some than in others. And because self-promotion is what every entertainer must do to gain work in the first place here, it has become the same to gain an award. The process is quite simple. There are two stages before the actual event. The nominations, in which the topfour nominated entertainers in their respective categories then get hugely publicised
for the next phase, which is the voting. Then, of course, whoever achieves the most votes wins on the day. Every year, however, there is a live performance from one of the categories, which is announced on the day of the event. It is actually achieved by audience vote in the venue - and we are talking 1,000 people. Last year, the audience were treated to the female singers and we saw two songs each, delivered by nominees Helena Campbell, Lisa Bridge and eventual winner Hayley Butler. There was a fourth nominee but, because the birth of her baby
was imminent, Bleu Travelle had to withdraw from the live performance. There is always a huge buzz around the whole event, but the live category always carries the most credibility for the winner. This is solely because what you see is what you get, and the audience in front of the performer at the time will decide who they believe is the person deserving of the award. I have heard a whisper of the possible live category this year and, if the organisers do decide on those rumours, the performances will be outstanding. Also, some of the oth-
er live performances on the day, which fit in with the Nineties’ theme, ensures that all who attend should have their expectations hugely exceeded. The nominations’ phase begins on Monday and all details will be available on Facebook, via the official Tenerife Entertainment Awards’ page, and also the website. But I felt it would be a good idea to define the categories here on the entertainment page. So, on behalf of Canarian Weekly, good luck to every entertainer on the Island, and all those involved.

The real spice of life! IT used to be an apple a day that kept the doctor away, but if you want to remain healthy these days, spicy food is the answer. A seven-year study of nearly 500,000 Chinese people aged between 30 and 79, found that those who scoffed spicy food most days were 14% less likely to die early than those who ate the same flavoured food less than once a week. A spicy diet also lowered their risk of dying from cancer, heart disease and respiratory problems significantly. The key ingredient is capsaicin, a chemical found in chilli peppers, which is commonly known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. After tackling each of the 487,000 participants about their general health and eating habits, scientists tracked them over the next sev-
en years. The researchers, whose findings were published in the British Medical Journal, stress that the Chinese have a very different diet and lifestyle from people living in the West. They also said that the benefits of spicy food were even more marked in those who didn’t drink alcohol. The American Association for Cancer Research says capsaicin has the ability to kill some cancer cells. It is not found in any other
foodstuff and is so potent that our taste buds can identify it, even when the concentration is a mere one part per million. And turmeric, the yellow spice found in curry power and some mustards, is thought to slow down the spread of cancer and the growth rate of tumours. Some experts claim it has the same effects on the body as certain cancer drugs. Sprinkle turmeric on kebabs, roast veg or in soup and combine it with black pepper to increase your absorption of turmeric by 2,000%. Chilli peppers can help to reduce cholesterol and are a good source of betacarotene and potassium. And size does matter with chilli peppers, Generally speaking, the smaller the pepper, the hotter because the most eye-watering peppers in the world are
all under three inches long. When Beyoncé wanted to lose weight in a hurry, she drank maple syrup with chilli for a couple of weeks. She was spot-on with the chillies because they really can help you to lose weight. Capsaicin has a thermogenetic effect, meaning it makes the body produce more heat and cranks up your metabolic rate. That means you carry on burning more calories for 20 minutes after you’ve finished eating. Also, if your weightloss regime is boring, adding chillies to enliven your meals means you are more likely to stick to your diet. The heat that chillies generate in the body increases blood flow, which makes for a strong cardiovascular system. One study showed that adding red pepper
to soup made people eat fewer calories. Spicy foods can also help to ease depression and stress because they boost the production of serotonin, the body’s own home-made feelgood hormone. But why does biting into something spicy make you feel as if your mouth is on fire? It’s because capsaicin binds to the thousands of pain receptors in the tongue, known as VR1 receptors. This sets off a sensation similar to the burning feeling you get when your mouth comes into contact with something that is hot in temperature, which is why we refer to spicy food as being “hot”. Most of us try to counteract that burning feeling by drinking water, which is a big mistake. Capsaicin is an oilbased compound, so it won’t dissolve in water.
Instead, sloshing water around your mouth just disperses the burning even more. In fact, you are much better off drinking milk or yoghurt, which contains casein protein, that will bind to the capsaicin and prevent it sticking to the pain receptors on your tongue. Eating anything fatty or sugary is always good for cooling yourself down after a particularly spicy meal. Though careless ingestion of chillies might cause discomfort, capsaicin is also a pain reliever, because of its warming effect on soft tissue. This is why it is so often used in creams for treating pain in muscles and joints. So don’t shy away from those spicy foods you say don’t agree with you. There’s medical magic in this hot stuff.

When in By Vanessa Vee ALWAYS on the search for exciting direct destinations, this week we take a sneaky peek at the beautiful city of Rome.
I have visited Rome on quite a few occasions and always love a chance to explore this magical city, though, unfortunately, I tend only to get day-trips there from cruise ships visiting the nearby port of Citiviettchia. Though the primary aim of the trips has been for sight-seeing, I have discovered that there is a lot more to Rome than meets the eye. Undoubtedly, its majestic ruins form a large basis for the appeal. Wandering among them, it is incredible to consider that this city was once at the centre of a vast, highlysophisticated empire, with public and private buildings easily comparable with the most lavish of today’s palaces. The so-called “Eternal City” today is, as it has always been, the sort of place where there is a surprise around every corner - and where one is continually aware of its long and vibrant history. It is something for which neither written descriptions nor photographs can prepare you. Often glimpsed unexpectedly at the end of long, narrow backstreets is Rome’s most famous monument, the Colosseum, the sheer scale of which will take
Rome!
your breath away. And a guided tour around the Colosseum is an absolute must! The guides will have you believing you really are transported back in time as you actually begin to relive the life they must have led in ancient times. Sharing Rome’s surprises with family and friends for the first time is a joy in itself and, undoubtedly, the most satisfying is introducing someone to the Trevi Fountain for the first time. The fountain has been seen so often in films that you would expect this to lessen its impact. But this is actually impossible. The sudden appearance of this romantic landmark, after a short stroll through a series of narrow Roman streets, evokes such surprise and delight in firsttime visitors and Rome veterans alike that it’s easy to see why it is so famous. The roaring waters of the fountain, supplied by an ancient Roman aqueduct from a source 20km away, combine with its breathtaking scale to overwhelm the small piazza in which it
is situated. No visit to Rome is complete without the obligatory ritual of tossing a coin over one’s shoulder into the waters of the Trevi, said to ensure good luck and your return to Rome. A visit to the Vatican City is also an absolute must because, you never know, you may get to glimpse the Pope. I haven’t yet, unfortunately, but all my other co-cruisers have at some stage. This independent city within a city has its own railway station, stamps and post office, national anthem, flag, own security service and a real police force. A minimum of one full day is really because of the enormous tourist numbers, you may spend time in line for the Basilica, Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum. I have touched on just a few of the well-known sights, but Italy is a country that oozes history and romance. We only live once, and this city should be on your bucket list, believe me. I’m always happy when I’m in Rome: I love the climate; the food and wine; the cool, crystal-clear drinking water which flows from the innumerable fountains that always seem to crop up when most needed, plus the hustle and bustle of city life. And I love checking out the amazing shops. A day-trip is certainly not long enough, because this is one city that needs to be given the time to be discovered in depth. Visit Rome direct from Tenerife this November from only 459 euros per person (based on two sharing). Price includes return flights, resort transfers and 7 nights in a central 4* hotel on a bed-and-breakfast basis. IF you are a regular to this column, then you know that I am direct and to the point - no lies or false information but honest advice about your hair.
While watching British TV here in Tenerife, I saw an advert for a new colour by a well-known company, which claims to perform a genuine miracle on your hair. It’s a product so advanced that I don’t even have it on my shelves: a new product which has revolutionised the hair industry. What am I dribbling on about, I hear you ask? Well, to my disbelief, it’s about a hair-colour claim from an actress used in the advert that her own hair was transformed from orange to blonde by just one easy-touse-at-home colour! Shake me awake and tell me I have been asleep for five years, because this claim is not only FALSE but defies the laws of any form of colouring. It’s like saying you can cover an orangepainted wall at home with one coat of white emulsion. We all know this isn’t going to work. If you are going to lighten orange hair to blonde, it has to be “stripped”, firstly by using a pre-lightener, then possibly pigment-
ed with a base to kill any left-over orange, and then another lightener used to take the hair to the blonde level. This, quite clearly, is a professional process that should be carried out in a salon only and NOT in your home, where the application will give you a patchy look at the very least. Some hairdressers wouldn’t even attempt to do this for fear of destroying the hair entirely. Lightening hair is a very delicate procedure, and I honestly do not know how the company has managed to get around the Advertising Standards Authority. It is pure fabrication,
that will leave many users with a mish-mash of colour which, in the end, will need repairing in a salon. If it’s difficult to carry out the procedure in a salon, then it is impossible to do at home! I cannot stress enough the dangers and that’s exactly what they are - of chemicals you can just buy off the shelf to try to recreate salon results at home. If you want to go ahead, then please do. But I am sure that if all goes wrong, some salons will not even try to correct what has been done. Colouring hair is an art that we, as stylists, train years to acquire learning the science of colouring and gaining knowledge from our years of salon experience. It’s not something that can be done by tipping a liquid on your head and hoping for the best!

By Monica Dyson TO tip or not to tip, that is the question! It would seem that it’s not really so straightforward. If you tip and give too little, you can be thought of as a cheapskate, and if you tip too much you are ostentatious and showy!
Today, the only people I tip seem to be the paper boy who delivers my Star before eight o’clock each morning, come rain or shine, and to whom I give an appreciative tip at Christmas - but maybe I should tip him more often? And my hairdresser. Although I know people who would prefer that they had a staff box in the salon so the money is shared out. That in itself can be contentious. Some years ago my daughter, eking out her spending money, worked as a waitress at a prestigious hotel/restaurant near our home at that time, and one visited by football managers when their team played Shef-

I remember a holiday in Austria many years ago when my husband got confused with the currency and realised only too late that he had probably tipped the waiter the equivalent of a week’s wages. Luckily, he did it near the start of the holiday because
we received excellent service from then on! Tipping seems to vary according to nationality. Only 60% of Americans tip, but Brits come nearly at the bottom of the list in recent research carried out over eight countries. Yet on a recent holiday in Greece, our local restaurant considered Brits to be the best tippers, with Italians at the bottom of the list! New Zealanders are considered the most miserly, while the Japanese are the biggest tippers. Tipping seems to have originated in 16th century England, when guests at English mansions were expected to give a “vail” - a small sum of money - at the end of their visit to compensate the owner’s servants for the extra work. As there were footmen, valets and gentlemen’s servants, to name just a few, the expense was considerable. But when an attempt was made to abolish it in London, there was rioting in many big houses among the staff. Tipping soon spread to hotels, bar and restaurants. One theory about the origin of tipping comes from the time of Samuel Johnson, who frequented a coffee house where there was a bowl with a notice saying: “To insure promptitude”. This
was shortened to TIP. Before 1840, Americans did not tip. But after the American Civil War, when rich Yanks started to visit England and learnt gentile ways, they started the practice back home. By the 1900s it had become the norm, but, ever over-the-top, Americans were heavily criticised for over-tipping! It seems you can’t win. President Benjamin Franklin, on visiting Paris, said: “Too overtip is to appear an ass; to under-tip is to appear an even greater ass!” However, it seems that we are stuck with the practice of tipping, but it can still be a minefield, and many people would like to see it
abolished. Emily Post was America’s etiquette queen. Her 1950 guide was called “Emily Post’s Etiquette”, which became the bible of everything - from social graces to social networking - for generations of Americans. It was reprinted four times between 1965 and 1995 by the Emily Post Institute, a unique family business run today by Elizabeth Post, her grand-daughter-in-law Emily said in her original guide, “Tipping is undeniably an undesirable system”, believing that people should get a decent living wage and not have to rely on tips. Unfortunately, in many cases, tips can be wages with very-low-
paid workers in bars and restaurants working 12-hour shifts and totally relying on the tips they get to live on. Many of the world’s richest people can be extremely stingy when it comes to tipping, with others really going over the top. At the last Oscars in America, a group of stars - including top TV host, actress and comedian Ellen DeGeneres - tipped a pizza delivery man $1,000 when he brought the food, while Russell Crowe, when filming Robin Hood in England, visited the kitchens in a local restaurant, performed an impromptu rock concert on his guitar and then left a £600 tip to be shared out. David Beckham’s $1,000 tip on a $100 restaurant bill puts him well and truly in the Top 10 of all celebrity tippers, and other generous ones include Barack Obama, Johnny Depp and Charlie Sheen. Unfortunately, two of the world’s richest stars are also thought to be among the meanest. Mick Jagger, worth $225m dollars, left $10 on a $90 tab, with Madonna, possibly the world’s richest female performer, leaving $18 on a $400 bill. They obviously don’t believe in that old adage: “You can’t take it with you!”

K9 news update
Hollie’s huge thank-you IN the spring of 2012, while the Rowson family from the Midlands were enjoying a family holiday on Golf del Sur, they came across a small, black, stray dog, which they took to our animal refuge.
They visited the dog (now called Lucy) each day and became attached to her. Arrangements were made for Lucy to fly to the UK as part of their loving family, and off she went that summer. Sadly, one year ago, Mrs Rowson passed away and family members decided to hold a collection during the funeral service, with all proceeds going to K9. Last week, daughter Hollie visited the kennels, accompanied by her boyfriend and K9’s Mikey, and she presented Kennel Manager Hazel with a cheque for a magnificent 1,418.02 euros. Needless to say, K9 are immensely grateful for this wonderful gesture. Specials needed Though ALL the K9 volunteers are amazing, we are recruiting at least two more special volunteers to help. We need a kennel maid (or male) to assist with kennel cleaning and other associated tasks for at least one morning a week. It’s hard work for four hours but

For further information, please contact Hazel on 667 638 468 or 822 106 195 The second person (male or female) is needed to drive, or assist the driver, in collecting donated items for our shop from anywhere between the Golf and Los Gigantes. Our transit van is based next to the shop in Alcala. Our present team are aged 70-plus and fantastic but, realistically, someone younger would be ideal. Larger items can be collected by contacting any of the above numbers. Atmospheric Fund-raiser There will be a fundraiser on Thursday afternoon (20th Aug) at the Atmosphere Bar, Sunset Harbour, in Torviscos (opposite the old market). Our daily plea Our Kennels are open EVERY day of the year, from 9am to 1.30pm, for exercising the dogs. If you have a couple of hours to spare, please come along and take some of them for a walk. No appointment necessary; just turn up with sensible footwear and a drink for yourself - and maybe a treat or two for one of your new friends. Dusty days such a choker CONSTRUCTION of the new Granadilla Port, which is being built near our refuge, is causing a few problems for our staff and dogs. The trucks and heavy plant machinery are creating an enormous dust cloud continuously, so our staff now have to wear dust masks. We are asking for help for donations of brown shade netting, which we can cover the outdoor recreational areas to help reduce the dust to protect the dogs.

By Carl Pattison WHILE working-out in my usual gym recently, I noticed that there are those who take care in how they look, and those who don’t ... those who bother to think about their image, even in in the gym, and those who throw on anything. I’m not here to tell people what they should or shouldn’t be wearing for a work-out. If you are comfortable in an old T-shirt and some shorts and your regular trainers, that’s great. If you care a little more about how you look while sweating your brains out (that’s what you do there, yeah?), maybe you should think about what you’re wearing and why you’re wearing it. Is it suitable for what you are going to be doing there? Will it be comfortable while your putting your body through its paces? I tend to think that if you’re going to perform your best, then you can’t go wrong if you’re feeling good about how you look. You guys sometimes tend to overdress - too many clothes - especially here in Tenerife. Sweat pants in summer with a thick Tshirt won’t help your body stay cool as you work out. And neither will under-dressing, with too much flesh on show putting off others working-out with you. Okay, if you have an amazing body and are proud of what you have achieved, that’s fine.
But just remember that you will be touching the equipment, and maybe others helping you in the gym. There’s nothing worse than transferring your sweat to another person, even by accident. Ladies, if you are working-out in a class and feel body-conscious, wear a looserfitting vest. Don’t overload your body with layers because this will make you look bigger. Just keep it simple. Keep those leggings simple, too, because gaudy colours and patterns will exaggerate any parts you are not too keen about. And, guys and girls, keep to the golden rule of wearing clean clothes for every gym visit. You don’t want to be working-out on your own because no one will come near you. If you feel comfortable in what your wearing, that’s all that matters. But you are there for a reason, and that’s to change your body. If you don’t like what’s staring back at you in the mirror, you’re not going to be inspired to push yourself more. No one has to spend a fortune - just basics that keep you flexible and allow you to move easily. Give what your wearing a little more thought and see how much better you feel once you’re in the gym.

By Val Sainsbury BRITISH hospitals are among the worst in the Western world for leaving surgical instruments in patients after surgery.
The UK has the sixthworst record among industrialised nations for surgeons leaving in “foreign bodies” after procedures, with 5.5 cases per 100,000 people discharged from hospital. A report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development shows the rate is three times that of Poland, with 1.9 cases per 100,000 patients, and twice that of Slovenia, at 2.9 cases. Experts say leaving items such as swabs, dressings and parts of hypodermic needles in patients’ bodies increases the risk of deadly infections and other

complications. It can also result in fatal blood poisoning and organ failure. The NHS classifies such incidents as “never events” because they should be avoided by systems of checks. Despite this, there were 102 cases in England in 2014/15. Joyce Robins, co-director of pressure group Patient Concern, said more needed to be done to protect patients from such risks. “It should be made a legal requirement that the check-list of instruments be read out loud and ticked off at the end of each surgical procedure,” she said. “It should not be a matter of pot-luck whether some instrument is left inside the patient.” The OECD report said the chances of foreign bodies being left in people were reduced by checks to count instruments after surgery, and effective communications between surgical teams. The data, which com-
pares 16 OECD countries, shows that Belgium records the fewest cases, with 0.5 per 100,000 hospital discharges. Switzerland fares worst, with 11.6 cases. In 2009, a mother of four was left with seveninch forceps inside her for three months following an operation. Donna Bowett, a former nurse, went to Alexandra Hospital in
Worcestershire to undergo keyhole surgery to remove her gall bladder. In the months that followed the surgery she suffered ‘excruciating’ pain, she said. Doctors could not explain her pain and sent her for an MRI scan, but the magnetic field from the scan caused the metal inside her body to move. The scan was stopped when Miss Bowett started scream-
ing with pain. Afterwards, she said it felt as though the instrument was trying to “pull through her skin”. The error was eventually picked up on an X-ray. Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients Association, said: “The NHS is recognised around the world as an unrivalled health service, but its clinical performance is achieved against day-in day-out
pressure on its staff.” A spokesman for NHS England said: “Any mistake of this kind is one too many. We are determined to make the NHS the safest healthcare system in the world - and have one of the most open-and-transparent reporting systems in place. “We are working hard to identify practical ways to ensure such errors are eradicated.”

The Move In pack includes beds with the type of mattress requested, all linen items such as sheets, pillows, blankets, towels, a full kitchen pack of crockery, cutlery, utensils etc, and curtaining to provide privacy, as well as basic lighting. If the customers already know how they want to go with the sofa or sofa bed, this can also be provided. In this way, the customers can stay in the property immediately, and, calmly, take time to choose the remaining items, both in terms of style, colour, design etc, together with the designer from the furniture store. New property ...what now?
By Sue McDonald MANY people who buy a property here in Tenerife then face the task of furnishing it. Sometimes they don’t know where to start, whereas other people might have a really good idea of what they want but don’t know how to go about it. If you are buying the property for investment, you might be happy for a reputable furnishing company to sort out the design, the inventory and the preparation of the apartment for rental. If however, the property is for your own use, you may have stronger ideas about what you want in terms of content, colour and design. The problem is that if you don’t live in Tenerife, how do you go about achieving your ideas, especially when you may
only be able to come out for a brief time, and don’t speak the language? The latest development is the “Move In” pack, which includes the basics you will need to stay in your new property, therefore saving the expense of a hotel for your first visit. In addition, staying

Keep your batteries properly charged
WE simply don’t like spending money unnecessarily on our car. But by the same token, to most people it is an important part of their life and they find it difficult to live without one!
Or at the very least, if it’s not working, then it is a real inconvenience. Regular checks, some of which you can do yourself, may mean the car functions better and lasts longer. One of the most important parts of a car, apart from the engine and gear box, is the battery. And for this to function, it should be charged. Car batteries are all built from the leadacid design, which was invented in 1859 by a French physicist. This
design is actually the oldest rechargeable battery design in existence and has changed very little over the years. However, the one thing the lead-acid battery does is supply a high amount of current in one go. The battery’s ability to produce a substantial surge makes it useful in meeting the electrical requirements of a
vehicle’s starter motor. A car battery is rechargeable and powers all the essential electrical support systems of the car. Without charge, a car will not start. Most car batteries deliver roughly a 13.1 volt output, which is a composite voltage delivered by six leadacid cells, connected in series. The operation of these lead-acid batteries in-
volves electro-chemical reaction between lead oxide and lead plates, immersed in diluted sulphuric acid. Charging induces chemical reactions, which store the electrical energy in chemical form. The chemical energy is then converted back to electrical energy when the battery output is used by the car. Normally, a battery
is charged by the car alternator. However, if there are certain problems with the alternator, or if the car has not been in use for some time, the battery may become totally discharged and require external charging. Here in Tenerife, you normally don’t get notice that the battery is failing, unlike in the UK, where starting will be sluggish.
Here, for example, you may leave the car parked, go shopping, return and … nothing! This is quite common and, of course, most frustrating. The solution then is to ask someone for a jump-start, or call your Grua, who will often jump-start it for you, or take the car to the garage of your choice. Either way, it is important that you use a garage to have the battery tested. It’s a simple, straightforward test, completed in a matter of minutes. If the battery does not give the appropriate reading, then a new battery is in order. If you are out and about, you may purchase a battery from a petrol station. But you need to make sure of buying the right one to fit your vehicle - and it needs to put out enough amperage.

By Roscoe THE new season is almost upon us and this week, Tenerife finally completed another signing. It has been a largely frustrating summer for fans as lots of players have been linked, but only three new players have been inked.
Honduras international Anthony Lozano is known as “Choco”, and I’m not sure how that would go down with the British press. He did okay last season at Olimpia, but had a horror spell with firstly Valencia and then Alcoyano in the 2011/12 season. He could be anything and is a real gamble. It seems a left-back, strongly rumoured to be Alex Martinez from Real Betis, is close to joining, while there is no doubt we need one more winger. The Numancia match is looming fast and it seems the policy for the first half of the season will be to play the kids. Centre-back Jorge should get a run, as will the players who have returned from loan.

loan stars
They all did okay in the leagues below, Abel especially, and there comes a stage when
you have to trust the management. If they weren’t showing signs of hitting the
required level, then Tenerife would surely have been busier in the transfer market.
Players In Anthony Lozano: Striker, from Olimpia German Sanchez: Centre-back from Olot Pedro Martin: Centre-back, from Mirandes Alberto: Centre-back/ midfield, returns from Valencia Jairo: Attacking midfielder, returns from Real Murcia Abel: Central midfielder, returns from La Roda Nano: Forward, returns from Hospitalet Nata Barreto: Forward, returns from Fuenlabrada

Hoppys get the heave-ho! THE headline fixture in Division 1 came at the home of the then top-placed Boothen Army, as they entertained Hoppys Bar, in fourth spot place.
What followed was a match littered with maximums and high checkouts - and a bit of a tonking for the Hoppys gang. For the Army, Chris, Steve and Ray fired in 180s, and Sam took out a fine 118, while Hoppys’ Pete replied with a cracking 143 finish. Given the strength of the surrounding teams, the Army’s 6-2 victory would seemingly dash any title hopes Hoppys may
have had, even at this early stage. So, the Army stay top ... er, no they don’t! Bar 180 A claimed that after ruthlessly swatting aside local rivals Emerald Lounge in an 8-0 whitewash that included a first 180 for the green men’s captain, Darren. Phoenix Bar’s 7-1 success at Waterfall A keeps them handily placed with games in hand, while Emerald Shamrocks won a tight 5-3er against Boothen Titans. Exiles Bar (the good-looking ones) gained revenge for their earlier defeat by the Playboys, beating them 6-2 to claim the Silencio bragging rights. But they surely won’t keep on about it, will they? Meanwhile, Palms Sports Bar’s trip to

Pas O Nadas A earned them a third win of the campaign, although they left it until the final rubber to claim victory. The dividend on the Division 2 pools coupon didn’t pay out a great deal after four of the seven matches ended all-square. But it shows that this is a fairly well-balanced table, apart, maybe, from Phoenix Flights, who hold a 12 point

lead at the top after a 7-1 success over Gaffers Jucee Girls. They could, however, be challenged by Sandys Chippers, who made it six wins in a row with an 8-0 whitewash of Waterfall B, and holding a match in hand. That result sent them above Spear Chuckers, who took the trebles leg to tie their match at Naughty Nautas. Summerlands and

Picassos also lost their trebles legs to finish all-square at Clouseaus and Bar Leones, respectively, while Sundowners held their nerve in the last leg to share the spoils with Marilyns. So the only other match to mention, an important one for Pas O Nadas B, was their 5-3 win at Mad Hunters. It was their first success of the season. Well done, Sheena!

Palms A set the early pace NEVER mind the return of football, this week saw a return to action in the Direct Telecom Pool League - and what an opening night it was. With many close games taking place, it is going to be an interesting season in both divisions. Gaffers A started their title defence against Gaffers B, newly-promoted to the top flight. And the B team fancied their chances after taking the first frame. That proved to be the only time they were in front after the champions roared back into a 4-1 lead. The B team chipped away and managed to get close at 5-4, but Neil and his boys know what is required and took the last two frames for the win. Tenerife Hammers A, last seasons runners-up and hoping to get back to top spot this season, opened their campaign at Terrace Bantams, who just avoided relegation last season. With Marky P back on board, though, the Bantams raced into a 3-1 lead and were brimming with confidence. Hammers shook off the cobwebs to take the next set by the same score to level the game at 4-4. Bantams put up a spirited fight, but Hammers got over the line 7-5, when a draw would have been a fair reflection. There are several teams looking to break the monopoly of the top two, Treehouse A, Phoenix Potters and The Phoenix all had a go last year. Treehouse A travelled to Tenerife Hammers C for their first game and, again, it was close.
The visitors made the brighter start, taking a 3-1 lead, despite Tony Macaroni clearing up from the break against debutant Scott. Welcome to Division One! With nothing between them in the next four frames, the game was poised at 5-3. Heineken and then James for the Hammers grabbed two frames to level it, and the finish was in sight. But Paul and then Jay fought back to give Treehouse the win. The Phoenix side, who have changed a little from last season, hosted promoted Bluebell A in yet another close match. The home team felt confident, but the Bluebell boys can play pool and eventually won to stick a nice early three points on the board. Down in Los Cristianos, Dreamers A welcomed old adversaries Phoenix Potters to town. Dreamers are normally renowned for their slow starts, and it looked like business as usual as the Potters took a 3-1 lead. But they then collapsed as Dreamers took the next four frames to lead. Dreamers’ captain Steve opened the final session with a clearance from his break and this gave the home team
at least a draw. Dave clawed one back for the Potters before Mark A took the deciding frame, which capped his fine performance of winning all three of his games. There has been a little friendly banter between the two teams from the Palms Bar. With the B team finishing higher than the A team last season, they wanted a change of name, understandably. But the A team, still living on past glories, refused, so we now have Palms A and Palms Elite! The latter started this season away to Exiles A, which is never an easy place to go. But they picked up where they left off last season and, despite losing the first two frames, they soon took a 5-3 lead. Exiles A tried to rally but Stash and Ben lost to give the win to Palms, although Tel and Blair did hit back to give the score more respectability. Palms A had a much easier time as they took on Terrace Roosters, the majority of whom are on holiday. You can only beat what is put in front of you, though, and Palms A made few mistakes as they raced into a 7-1 lead, taking the points quickly. Roosters took a cou-
ple of dead rubbers to make the score a little more respectable, but the damage had been inflicted quickly. Division Two welcomes a few new teams this year, and it looks like being a difficult division to predict. One or two of last year’s sides will really fancy their chances, but the new teams are unknown entities, and I wouldn’t like to call this one! Tenerife Pool Tables, who travelled to face off against old foes Picasso’s, are certainly looking for an improvement this season. The first round of frames went to TPT as they moved into a 3-1 lead. Second round went to Picasso’s and the score was 4-4. Colin took one for TPT to edge them in front, but Pete and Jack struck back - 6-5 to Picasso’s, and just one more for the win. But up stepped Harley for TPT. For those who don’t know, he is just 10 years old and was up against Fran. But he showed no signs of nerves and there was little Fran could do as he took the frame, the game ending in a fair draw. Treehouse B were also under-achievers from last season, but they have picked up a few new players and played host to Splash Bar, who are an experienced team. Early frames were traded and after eight games there was nothing between the two teams. It looked like heading for a draw, but Treehouse dug deep with Ben and Alan giving them a 6-4 lead. Rod hit back for Splash, but Paul held his nerve for Treehouse and the points were theirs. Hoppys Bar, back this

And when they went through the gears, they were just too much for Hoppys, picking up the first three points to make them early frontrunners. league, and Sabores opened their account against Dreamers B. It will be a night they want to forget, however. League games can be very nervy and it may take a couple of fixtures to get settled, but Dreamers have already experienced this and made a great start to the season in picking up a win. But I am sure there is much more to come from the Medano team!

United need an OJ lift!
IT has been a long, hot, couple of months. But finally, we get to say: “Welcome back to the Barclay’s Premier League; How you have been missed!” It has been another summer of change in terms of players in and out, but it all comes down to this now.
Man Utd v Spurs United have been big-spenders in the summer transfer window, but they still look weak across the back, in fact, even OJ Simpson had more of a defence than they do. They played well in this fixture last season, though, and will start with confidence. I’m trying to work out if Spurs will have enough players for a team. They have moved a lot on, but replacements have been thin on the ground and there is a huge burden on Harry Kane to reproduce last season’s goalscoring form. They may have all their eggs in one basket there. Last season: 3-0 Prediction: Home win
Bournemouth v Aston Villa Bournemouth will have been happy getting a home fixture for their first Premier League outing, and will also have been happy facing Aston Villa, who flirted with relegation last season. The Cherries have strengthened and they will hope to get points on the board early. Villa have suffered a couple of big losses in the summer, with Delph and Benteke moving on to pastures new. Tim Sherwood hasn’t splashed too much of the cash on big names, but he has made a couple of shrewd signings. For me, Rudy Gestede is the one too watch. Last season: N/A Prediction: Draw
Everton v Watford I fear for Everton this season because I believe they have a worse squad, and a manager who doesn’t inspire. I didn’t tip them to go down in my previous column, but they have a difficult fixture list up to Christmas, which could see them in real trouble going into 2016. The Hornets make a welcome return to the Premier League and this is a good game for them to open the campaign. They have now bought in 10 new players, some with PL experience, but they need them to gel quickly. Last season: N/A Prediction: Away win
Leicester v Sunderland Who can forget the flying start Leicester made last year? A few, probably, as they completed the season with a flying finish and managed to stay up. Hit by a scandal in the summer which saw players and the manager leave, they have turned to Claudio Ranieri. He has experience, but has he been away too long? Sunderland, for me, should be a mid-table team, Dick Advocaat has spent more time with the squad and bought in some good players to strengthen it. They will be a more mature team, less prone to make mistakes. Last season: 0-0 Prediction: Away win
Norwich v Crystal Palace The Canaries were a good, strong unit in the Championship and difficult to beat. But they have lost some of that steel as players have gone. With the exception of one, all the newcomers have played at this level before. But there are no genuine, inspirational names on the list and it could be a long season for their fans. Palace could be a surprise package. They have cut a lot of deadwood from their squad and bought in some quality replacements, most notable Yohan Cabaye from PSG. But the one to watch for me is Patrick Bamford, the loanee from Chelsea. Last season: N/A Prediction: Away win
Arsenal v West Ham Is this the year the Gunners finally win another Premier League trophy? They have showed good pre-season form and have invested wisely in Petr Cech, who, many have said, could be the final piece to the jigsaw. But I feel they need another proven goal-scorer to take the burden off Olivier Giroud. Hammers have backed new manager Slaven Bilić in the transfer market, but I have a feeling it could go one way or the other - and he could be a Paolo Di Canio at Sunderland. They need a big season with the Olympic Stadium move casting a large shadow. Last season: 3-0 Prediction: Home win
Newcastle v Southampton It is hoped that Steve McClaren can turn the Geordies’ fortunes around and, for me, he has made the signing of the summer with Aleksander Mitrovic, who is a complete nutter, not averse to head-butts and rude goal celebrations. He wants to emulate Shearer; I think he is more a cross of Tino Asprilla and Temuri Ketsbaia. Saints, who have become transfer-window specialists, have bought in more great players, with Jordy Clasie the pick of the bunch. They will again be sniffing around the top four and should have a good run in Europe. Last season: 1-2 Prediction: Away win
Stoke v Liverpool Gone is the long-ball Tony Pulis era, and now comes a time of skill and flair at the Britannia, with Mark Hughes bringing in players who can change games. Strangely, the Potters have a good relationship with Barcelona and have picked up some great players. They now have more Champions League winners in their squad then City, Arsenal and Liverpool. The Reds will be hoping for a better start than last year after big buys again in the summer. The saga of Raheem Sterling has overshadowed certain aspects of their business, and I think Roberto Firmino could be the stand-out player this season. Last Season: 6-1 Prediction: Away win
West Brom v Man City The Baggies must be willing the transfer window to close as Saido Berahino continues to be linked with a move away from the club. They haven’t got the biggest of squads and his loss, especially if it comes near the end, could be a huge problem. This is a difficult fixture to open with and they will just want it out of the way. City will be eager to take the crown back from Chelsea, but they could be distracted by the Champions League as they have never had a good showing. More flair players have been bought in but, like their neighbours, defence worries me. They need Sergio Aguero fit! Last season: 1-3 Prediction: Away win
Chelsea v Swansea Nice to see Jose Mourinho start the season with more moaning than a fishwife after defeat against Arsenal in the Community Shield. They have not been as active in the transfer market as I would have thought, but maybe there is a surprise still to come. As for Falcao, he looked the same as last season ... well, apart from the haircut. Did Swansea peak last season with their high finish, or can they go a step further this time around? With a squad investment of less than £10m, I’m not convinced they can produce the same form. Garry Monk could go from hero to zero. Last season: 4-2 Prediction: Home win
