PAVEMENT SCOOTERS BANNED!
Inside this week...
WHEN you are on holiday, they look like a fun way to spend an hour. You can whiz around the resort, check out the sights and, maybe, discover something a little different as you zoom down the pavement at 30mph. Continued on page 3

Arona starts the big Scooter clampdown Contiuned from front. But as our postbag will testify, scooters and vehicles are an accident waiting to happen on our pavements and walkways. Barely a day goes by without Canarian Weekly receiving some email about the dangers on the promenades and community areas. And, finally, it seems that something is being done. This week, Arona Council banned the use of electric bikes and two-wheel scooters on the boardwalks. Juan Sebastian Roque, Arona Security Councillor, said: “Both these ‘vehicles’ breach the Road Safety Act, and rules of the road and the Municipal Traffic Ordinance.” The ruling does not affect people with proven disabilities, who are using a scooter as a legitimate mobility vehicle. The terminology is a little vague, and it is understood that this initial action is deliberately open to interpretation. It gives police the power to make their own considered decision, although it seems crystal clear what a bike is. Already, Arona Local Police have seized over 120 scooters, and the Council has met with companies renting these vehicles to inform them of this decision and its legal basis. “In two weeks, we managed to solve this problem,” says Sebastian Roque. “We have had many complaints presented to us about this issue for over a year, with an average of 10 every day. “We have reports of dozens of accidents, with full-frontal collisions, and people with visual and hearing disabilities are especially being affected.” In last week’s Canarian Weekly, Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Fraga told us: “Yes I am aware of this problem. Also, the big concern of people renting disability vehicles illegally. “We are all aware of
the problems on the pavements, and the police are also looking into this. I am looking at ways of dealing with this problem and it’s something Adeje will control.” While Adeje look into it, Arona have acted, even if it’s just a first shot across the bow. Fraga’s point about illegal rentals is interesting because it will take some time to get the law tightened up. A Canarian Weekly investigation has discovered that in 2012, there were just five “businesses” here in the South offering mobility scooters. And some appeared more legal than others. A couple have shop fronts and full-time staff, while others have little more than the back of a van and no static
address. Today there are at least a dozen companies, again with different-looking legal statuses, and this doesn’t include those offering “social” scooters. We have all seen them on the streets. As it stands, those “social” scooters with three wheels or more are the “accident waiting to happen”. But two-seater scooters are allowed on the pavements of
A r o n a and, of course, Adeje, despite them being illegal in Spain, Britain and Europe! Back in 2005, one Southern-based company started hiring out two-seater scooters, only to be told in no uncertain terms that they were illegal to use and hire in Spain. So why the relaxation of the law in 2015? In March this year, the UK’s Department
of Transport published a series of European-wide updates. This included the following on scooters: “Two-person mobility vehicles are not permitted to be used on the public highway (i.e. on a pavement or road). They can be used on private land with the permission of the land owner. It is not permitted to carry anyone else on a mobility vehicle e.g. a baby or a small child.”
Even the hugely-respected n332.es website, which advises on Spanish highway matters, says: “Mobility vehicles designed to carry two people cannot be used on the pavement or road because they don’t meet the definition of an invalid carriage in law.” A mobility scooter is, surely, just that: a vehicle to help those who need mobility. Those who require a scooter legitimately will have the relevant documentation, insurance and, of course, a blue badge. They must also use the vehicle responsibly. In return, they are entitled to have a sound, competent vehicle which is fully legal and insured. Our pavements have become motorways and, while we are all for tourists enjoying their holidays, it cannot come at the expense of injury and upset. And lots of people feel it’s only a matter of time before there is a fatality on our walkways. The “scooter” boom is actually being put down to their falling purchase price and new-found cult popularity. This has leapt over here following their success in Benidorm, after the TV show of the same name featured the popular Madge character and her escapades on a mobility scooter. Stag and Hen parties seek them out and cause carnage on the streets of Benidorm. It is believed that as many as 600 tourists hire scooters every day just for social purposes. Just this week, in fact, on-the-spot 50-euro fines have been brought in by the local council to try to put a lid on the problem. Over 50 fines were issued in the first 48 hours and a street cleaner was hospitalised after being hit by a scooter. The new local law states that anyone under the age of 55 and able-bodied is not allowed to drive a scooter. Over to you Mr Mayor.

cial crisis has greatly affected Tenerife’s birth rate, according to a survey by the Canarian Institute of Statistics (Istac).
Researchers found that eight years ago, more children were born in all municipalities throughout the South of Tenerife. Official figures show that in 2007, from Candelaria to Santiago del Teide, there were 2,851 births, while in 2013 that number dropped to 2,161 - 690 fewer. The data reinforces a general trend in the 12 municipalities. Arona (-308), Granadilla (-109), Candelaria (-64)
and Guia de Isora (-60) all saw the birth rate drop significantly. Jose Leon Garcia Rodriguez, Professor at the University of La Laguna, said: “After such a prolonged economic crisis, birth rates never return to the previous figure because families have to adapt to a demographic model, based on greater planning and more expense in real terms.” On the flip-side we are living longer. In the last five years in Arona, the most populated place in the South has added 1,848 more births than deaths; followed by Granadilla,1,229; Adeje, 1,190; Candelaria, 559; San Miguel de Abona, 486, Guia de Isora, 276; Guimar 151, and Santiago del Teide, with 48 births more than deaths.
Thousands settle for the Canaries THE Canary Islands’ migratory balance has changed over the last few years and, in 2014, more people settled here than left. Official figures show there were 7,810 more arrivals than emigrations, in stark contrast to the 10,373 in 2013 and 35,697 in 2006, who left for a different life. The Canarian Institute of Statistics says there are four islands with more immigrants than emigrants: Tenerife (6,891), Fuerteventura (852) Lanzarote (536) and La Gomera (100).
The total migration balance of the Canary Islands (7,810) was the result of both the positive migration balance with the rest of Spanish regions (1,957) and abroad (5,853). There were also 62,856 in and out by internal migration (from one municipality to another Autonomous Community),with 51,355 movements within the same island. Those who came from overseas were mainly from Italy, Cuba, UK, Germany and Venezuela.
Health Minister off and running JESUS Morera, new Canary Islands’ Health Minister, has already fulfilled one of the promises he made at his inauguration. The Government has approved Morera’s proposal to return the Health Service to all those who were excluded by the Ministry at the end of 2012, adding up to over 40,000, mainly illegal immigrants. “It is difficult to ascertain what the duration of the formal proceed-
ings will be because we have to meet legal deadlines to repeal the earlier order and publish a new one,” said Morera. “But they are very advanced because it is an issue that has been working since my arrival in the Ministry.” In fact, he hopes the “paperless” system may be reinstated before October. The “new” rule will see the return to health care for the entire population living in the Islands.

EHIC scam 14th August - 20th August 2015
THE National Health Service could be open to fraud because of loopholes when European Health Insurance cards are issued.
People who had never worked in Britain were able to obtain a free EHIC card in the UK, according to a Daily Mail investigation. And health services abroad were then able to claim back their treatment costs from the UK authorities. The Department of Health has not denied the flaw, and the Government plans to tighten the system “urgently”. The EHIC covers the cost of state-provided healthcare for British travellers in certain European countries. It covers emergency treatment and certain pre-existing medical conditions, and routine maternity care, provided the reason for a patient’s visit is not specifically to give birth. To obtain a card online, an applicant must provide a personal NHS n u m b e r, which is allocated upon registration at a GP practice. W h i t e hall officials believe the scale of fraud could be limited. But critics will say that because the Government doesn’t know how much of the money paid to other health systems for EHIC use - £154 million in 2013/14 - might be the result of fraud,
is itself a problem. The DoH acknowledges that the system needs to be tightened up. But questions will be asked about whether more robust evidence of residence and National Insurance contributions is required before NHS numbers and EHIC cards are provided. Cards issued in the UK have a five-year lifespan, and some argue that this could be shorter, in line with other countries. Hungarian reporter Ani Horvath, working undercover for the Mail, said she obtained an NHS number and then an EHIC card. She claimed she was then able to access a range of medical treatment in Hungary - including maternity care - with the authorities there able to recoup costs from Britain. The reporter had a fellow-journalist pose as her landlord and offer a forged tenancy agreement as proof of address, in order to register at a London GP surgery. M s
Horvath said she then flew to London and had a check-up at the surgery, during which her Hungarian ID card and the lease document were scanned but not questioned. She was then issued with an NHS number, which her accomplice used to apply online successfully for an EHIC card for her, valid for five years. The European Health Insurance Card entitles you to the same state healthcare as a citizen in that country - this includes prescriptions, GP visits and hospital stays. EHIC care is not always free and the details vary between states, depending on their healthcare system. Some costs can be claimed when a patient returns home but, again, this depends on the local set-up. The card can be used in any of the 27 EU countries outside the UK, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. It covers emerg e n c y c a r e a s
well long-term conditions, including kidney dialysis treatment. People are still advised to have travel insurance because private healthcare and flights home are not covered. Health Minister Alistair Burt said: “It is completely unacceptable that people living outside the UK think they can abuse our NHS. The Department will urgently carry out more work to include EHIC applications.” Whitehall sources added that this work was part of an “ongoing drive” to crack down on so-called health tourism. There was no evidence of widespread abuse of the EHIC system, they said, but added that it was not known how much was spent as a result of fraudulent claims. Around five million EHIC cards were issued by the NHS in the last 12 months, but it is not clear how many of these were to non-UK nationals. Consultant surgeon Meirion Thomas told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme it was a well known scam. “It’s already got around,” he said. “It’s there - it’s in the real world. Migrants come into this country and ask for EHIC cards.” He added that better checks on identification would help block the fraud.

Canaries’ chiefs anger over their Budget fund
THE Canary Islands Government is miffed at the sum of money they will receive from the State Budget, saying the funds were “insufficient”. Rosa Dávila, Minister of Finance, has requested Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to reconsider the bill, “especially with regard to policies destined to our people”. An official request to
make amendments has been tabled in Parliament, and Dávila added: “The money for the Islands for next year will amount to 856.8 million euros - far less than the 1447.1m it had in 2010. This is 590.2 million less, even if we are getting more than in 2014.” In the 2012-2016 period, the per capita investment in the archipelago has been below the national average: 52 euros less per capita in 2011; 92 in 2012; 59 in 2013; 60 in 2014, 78 in 2015 and 59 in 2016.
Tourism still booming THE tourist occupation on Tenerife will reach 95% in August, which is about the same rate as last year, although it can rise with last-minute bookings, says Ashotel manager Juan Pablo Gonzalez.
By areas, the South will enjoy 90-95% occupancy, the North around 75% and Santa Cruz 65% - a normal figure for this time of year. But, says Gonzalez: “This is because the capital is not a holiday destination as such.” Of the other islands,
La Palma has an occupation rate of 65-70%, which is higher than in recent years, while La Gomera reach 85-90% with a great influx of domestic tourism. In the case of El Hierro, Gonzalez said: “The number of beds available is so small, so they do not have a statistic that can be properly commented on. But it seems to be as good as usual.” According to Gonzalez, the international tourism in winter is increasing in real terms, and the number of Spanish tourists is now second behind British tourism.
No chance of a sandy wedding GETTING married on a sandy beach should be a modern dream, but the idea is as far away as ever.
“There is nothing new in this regard, because the Catholic Diocese administers the sacrament of marriage only in sacred places, and away from those places, no authorisation is granted.” That the sharp view from the Bishop of Tenerife on the recent decision of the Directorate General of Coasts, a national position from central government, to allow such celebrations on Canarian beaches. So in theory, it is possible, provided all licences are obtained and fees paid. But the Catholic Church says No! Regional presidents won’t have time to take their holidays POLITICIANS, like school teachers, enjoy a nice long holiday. But it seems that most of the new regional presidents will not be taking an extended break this summer.
And what breaks they have will be taken at home! Normally, Spanish politicians have the whole of August off and, sometimes, they don’t return to their desks until the kids are back at school. Not this year! The late local elections, the extra time taken to form pacts, demands on drawing
up budgets and putting laws on the books, together with the upcoming General Elections, means it will be a working month for most. In addition to all of this, Cataluña President Artur Mas has signed a decree for the Catalan elections to be held on 27th September, which has triggered a massive political storm on all sides. Mr Mas says he will take just one week off before he starts campaigning, and his rivals are doing the same. Juan Vicente Herrera, President of Castilla and Leon, has vowed to take just one long weekend, while In Castilla-La Mancha, Regional President Emiliano García-

Tenerife Bishopric, even recalling: “There are some hotels that have a kind of chapel and have requested the ability to perform religious weddings. But
they have not been granted, following the same criteria.” It is believed that every year, hundreds of requests are received for marriage of people of
other faiths who wish to wed in Tenerife temples because of their beauty and uniqueness, but are denied. Normally, the bishoprics do not tend to grant such permits unless their countries have some kind of agreement with Spain. Of those who are married in the Archipelago, they have the permission of the Bishop of the country of origin of the parties involved, and that of the provincial diocese where the wedding is taking place. Although there are no official figures, requests to marry here from those who don’t reside on the islands is growing - more than double that of five years ago! On other islands, such as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the demand has grown so much that the Bishopric of the Canaries has put restrictions on such marriages in 2016 because many churches are flooded with requests.

No wonder they melted! SPAIN experienced its hottest July on record, according to the country’s meteorological agency, which merely confirmed what many frazzled residents suspected anyway.
A new Aemet weather summary for last month showed the average combined nightand-day temperature in Spain was 26.5C (79.7F), which was 2.5C warmer than usual, and above the 26.2C average experienced during the memorablyhot 2003 summer. The 26.5C benchmark also made last month the hottest July since Spain overhauled its record-keeping systems in 1980. The Aemet report showed that average day-time maximum temperatures were 2.8C higher than normal, while the mercury hit night-time levels 2.2C above average. The central and south-eastern parts of Spain saw the most extreme variations from the average. But while the whole month may have felt warm to people outside of relatively cool areas such as Galicia and along the Cantabrian coast, there
were actually three distinct heatwaves. Those periods saw temperatures higher than 45C in the Guadalquivir basin in Andalusia, and in inland Valencia. On 6th July, a baking Cordoba had to put up with 45.2C, while Zaragoza airport sizzled with 44,5ºC the following day, when Murcia notched up 43C. The month’s coolest temperature - apart from mountain stations - 8.3C on 26th July, was registered at the appropriatelynamed Villafría (or cold town) in the Burgos province. Those hoping for a cool autumn as compensation for the blistering weeks of July can forget it! In a longrange forecast that even Aemet admits has limitations, the agency says there is a 60% chance that the August-to-October period will be warmer than average in most of the country.
Train plan gets back on track THE long-hoped-for train service in Tenerife moved a stride closer after the State Budget included funds for a feasibility project report. A 860,000-euro total has been allocated, with a similar sum going to Gran Canaria for its train project. These sums are being sent to the Ministry of Development, to be used to draft a construction project. It is believed that the projects will look firstly at a link between Santa Cruz and Candelaria - a
section which the Tenerife Cabildo will, to the surprise of nobody in the South, prioritise. Last week the “Special Territorial Plan for South Rail” was given the green light to commission an environmental report on the train plan. “The idea is to have this text before the end of the year,” said Cabildo President Carlos Alonso. “The next step after will be to get an agreement between the Cabildo and the central government for firm funding.”

Anxious parents worry over their schoolchildren CHILDREN in England are given less freedom to play by anxious parents than those in many other European countries.
A study by University of Westminster academics had England ranked seventh for child independence in its study of 18,000 kids, aged 7-15, in 16 countries, Freeing children to go out alone in their local area benefited their health and development, said the researchers. And the top reason for restricting freedom was their fear of traffic. The youngsters and their parents were surveyed between 2010 and 2012 about what they were allowed to do in their local neighbourhoods unsupervised. This included: *Crossing main roads
*Going to places other than school *Travelling home from school *Cycling on main roads *Going out after dark The study said: “A large proportion of children under 11 in most of the countries do not have the freedom to get about their local area. “Even the oldest children are restricted in what they are allowed to do, at an age when many of the rights of adulthood are close to being granted, including the right to drive vehicles on the road once the test has been passed.” Overall, Finland was found to be the topperforming country on independent mobility,
with Germany second. But the survey said that without supervision, most Finns can walk or cycle to places other than school, aged seven; cross main roads, travel home from school and go out after dark, aged eight; cycle on main roads, aged nine and travel on local buses at 10. In England, most primary-school children are allowed to cross roads without supervision, but only 28% can travel home from school and even fewer can go out after dark, travel on local buses or walk to places other than school. Even at secondary school, under 25% are allowed out alone after dark. Ben Shaw,
Wildfire forces evacuations AROUND 1,400 people from towns and campsites in western Spain, were evacuated as a wildfire ripped through a vast area last Friday, burning over 12,400 acres of land. The blaze, which broke out on Thursday amid scorching temperatures, has devastated the scene, said the Extremadura region Government in a statement. Three hundred firefighters, backed by water-bomber aircraft, battled the wildfire, which was fanned by strong winds. Residents from the villages of Acebo and Perales del Puerto, as well as holiday-makers from a number of mountain camp-sites, were taken overnight to the nearby towns of Caceres and Moraleja. Some 600 firefighters were battling four other wildfires burning in the south-eastern region of Murcia.
The fires burned at least 1,500 acres of land, and Pedro Antonio Sanchez, head of Murcia’s regional government, said firefighters “worked intensely to stabilise” the blazes. The risk of wildfires was high across most of Spain on Friday because of soaring temperatures, strong winds and parched vegetation, warned the Agriculture Ministry. Wildfires have destroyed over 54,000 hectares of agricultural and forest land in Spain this year, exceeding the
amount burned during the last two years combined, according to the Ministry. Most of the wildfires happened in July, which was the country’s hottest month on record, according to national weather agency AEMET. The average temperature in Spain last month was 26.5 degrees Celsius (79.7 Fahrenheit), said the agency said. The August of 2003 had previously been the hottest month on record, with an average temperature of 26.2 degrees Celsius.
director of the Policy Studies Institute, said: “Obviously, we’ve got to protect children. But part of their development is that we allow them to gain independence. “People see the change from primary school to secondary school as the time to do it, but not having them do it earlier means there is a spike in road accidents at this age.”
Poverty of our islands
THE Canary Islands Government and the Red Cross have agreed this week that poverty persists, or even continues to grow on the islands.
That said, some economic indicators show that things are improving, despite ongoing job insecurity. “The macro-economic data suggests that there are some improvements in the economy, and it is true that it has led to reduced unemployment,” said Nestor Hernandez, Government Commissioner for Social Inclusion and Fight against Poverty. “But the truth is that we must look at the quality of employment.” Red Cross spokesperson Gerardo Mesa agrees, saying: “Sometimes, it is said that we are better, because there are more people working. “But jobs are precarious, wages are very low and, therefore, some of those people who have already gotten a job come to the Red Cross for help, because what they earn is not enough to live on.” Mr Mesa has estimated that 50,000 people in the Canaries suffer “extreme poverty - and there is a continuous rise.”

Domestic violence - kids also warrant protection NO fewer than four minors were, allegedly, killed by their fathers in just seven days recently. And since 2013, a total of 18 children have died in similar cases.
On paper, Spain has protocols which should trigger alerts to the authorities to monitor and protect the children of women who are victims
of domestic violence. But experts claim this is not being put into practice, and that aggressors are often able to visit their children without supervision - in many cases violating conditions and restrictions imposed legally by a judge. “An abuser can never be a good father,” they warn. The Spanish Government has just approved the Infancy Law, which recognises the children of female victims of domestic violence, and it
Six new dinosaurs revealed SCIENTISTS have used 142 teeth from Spain to identify six non-avian dinosaurs - traditional, extinct animals - who existed in the South Pyrenees Basin in Spain during the Upper Cretaceous period, which lasted several million years. Previously, there were just two known dinosaur species around this area, but the findings have quadrupled that number. Using the teeth, the study suggests the presence of six new species of toothed flesh-eating dinosaurs (theropods) - five small, one large - found in the Campanian-Maastrichtian region. Angelica Torices, post-doctoral fellow in biological sciences at the University of Alberta, says: “Teeth are especially important in the study of Upper Cretaceous creatures in Spain and the rest of Europe because we don’t have complete skeletons of theropods from that time in those locations.” Relying on small elements and findings to reconstruct the dinosaur’s evolution is finally paying off. Carnivorous dinosaurs replenished their teeth constantly. This gives the scientists huge
finds, which help our understanding of these extinct creatures. The study estimates that secluded teeth can aid in reproducing pieces of the dinosaur’s paleofaunas - fossil animals occupying a particular region - when better material is not present. Not only does it help scientists understand the dinosaur’s response to climatic changes, but also changes some beliefs we already had of dinosaurs. Ms Torices adds: “It completely changes the vision of the ecosystem. We understand now that dinosaurs went extinct very quickly, and the culprit could be linked to a large, catastrophic event in those times. “The only way we can study biodiversity under such conditions is through the fossil record.” The teeth were collected from eight areas in Spain, including Trevino County, Huesca, Lerida, and Lano. These new theropod species would have lived during the Campanian age, which was about 83.6 million to 72.1 million years ago. Some species are also known to be from the Maastrichtian age, about 72.1 million to 66 million years ago.
also serves to remind judges that they must always rule on cautionary measures that affect them (agreed visits, custody, etc.) The law itself reflects that there is still a lot of work to do in Spain when it comes to protecting minors, to which experts are in agreement. The debate has been reopened after the cases last week, in which a man is alleged to have killed his wife and two children in Castelldefels (Barcelona), before killing himself, and another man in Moraña (Pontevedra), who slit the throats of his two daughters. “The first step in a case of domestic violence should be a systematic evaluation of the risks faced by the children,” says Miguel Lorente, a lecturer in Medical Law and the University of Granada and a former Gender Violence delegate. “But in many cases, the courts don’t do this and claim it’s unnecessary. Tania Sordo, a lawyer specialising in women’s rights, says: “Domestic violence has very deep roots in Spain, and is still normalised and minimised, and one of the stereotypes is that a man can be a good father despite being an abuser. “But the process is failing. The credibility of many victims is taken away. They are not granted the condition of
victim, and judges do not intervene to evaluate the greater interest of the minor, which should always be above the right of a father to see his children.” Both Sordo and Lorente relate cases of children who are scared to be left with their parents, with witness statements that are documented but not taken into account by the courts. And they both agree: “The Convention on the Rights of the Child, which has been ratified by Spain, states that minors should be listened to according to their maturity and age, and that their opinions should be taken into account.” Experts say that this kind of violence is not directed physically at the woman, but it has a
direct effect on her. Children are the means by which abusive men can do the most damage possible. “The revenge component is partly what motivates these crimes,” says Antonio Andrés Pueyo, a psychology lecturer at the University of Barcelona. “Revenge, anger, sexism, impulsiveness, blind moments of rage, and emotional disorders are the others.” In the two most recent cases of violence against children, Lorente does not believe that the first case would have influenced the other. Seeing another such crime can “reinforce the actions of the abuser, and make him think more about a possible crime,” he says, and adds that these actions are usually pre-
meditated and planned in advance. Following these latest crimes, the opposition Socialist Party (PSOE) called for the implementation of a risk-evaluation system, which would allow judges to adopt the measures needed to protect children from domestic violence. The Health Minister, meanwhile, has called for more of these cases to be reported to the authorities. Telling the police, however, doesn’t always avoid tragedy. One in every three women killed last year in Spain - there were 54 victims in total had reported her abuser. Marisa Soleto, from Spain’s Women’s Foundation, points to another problem: the training received by those dealing with gender-violence cases. In the case in Castelldefels, for example, the regional police force had visited the home of the couple - a 61-year-old man from Uruguay, and a 45-year-old woman from Bielorrussia – because of their regular arguments and fights. No formal complaint was ever made, however. “How is it possible,” asks Soleto, “that after a number of interventions by the Mossos (Catalonia police force) - even though there was no official report - no one had thought that the minors who lived there needed to be protected?”
Bungee-jump teenager killed in 50-metre fall A TEENAGE girl from Holland was killed while bungee-jumping from a viaduct near Santander, in northern Spain. The 17-year-old, in a group from the Netherlands and Belgium staying at a nearby surf camp, fell some 40m (130ft) into a dry riverbed below. Last month, British tourist Kleyo De Abreu died in a bungee jump off a bridge near Granada, in southern Spain. She suffered fatal injuries when she hit the wall of the bridge
below her. A police spokesman told Dutch media that the latest “ghastly accident” may have been caused by carelessness, although it was unclear what had gone wrong. The teenager had been taking part in a type of bungee jump known as “puenting”, which involves diving with two cords attached, and then swinging beneath the bridge or viaduct. Bungee-jumping has become extremely popular in Spain in recent years, among locals and
foreign tourists alike. Spectacular settings in rural areas of Andalusia in the south, or Cantabria and the Pyrenees, in the north, are common destinations for bungee aficionados and first-timers. Companies offer both bungee-jumping and bridge-swinging puenting. Local police chief Joaquin Gonzalez said he had not known that puenting took place on the bridge, adding that it was “extremely risky”. The jump took place from the top of a bridge
over the A8 road at Cabezon de la Sal, in Cantabria. Mayor Isabel Fernandez told Dutch TV: “It was an enormous tragedy - the girl was so young. We’re ready to help her family as much as we can.” Around 10 deaths have been linked to bungeejumping since it took off in the Eighties. Prior to the two fatalities this summer, the most recent was that of a 48-year-old man at Robledo de Chavela, near Madrid, in 2013.

Thunderous outlook just not for me!
IT has been the strangest of weeks in the skies. To have rain in August is rare. To have a thunderstorm in August is rare. To have a calima and a thunderstorm at the same time all week long? Nah.
It has been horrible, and I feel for those who have been on holiday. But at least they are in Tenerife, where there is still plenty to do on a strange weather day. I’m not sure that was the case even 10 years ago. The unexpected rainfall is rather welcome for some, and I’m sure it brought a smile to those who rely on the land for their money. They have certainly needed it in La Palma, where they were on the verge of official drought. Also for residents of
Los Llanos de Aridane in their La Palma capital of Santa Cruz, who have had major problems with their water leaking away. I’m sure Mariano Hernández, from La Palma Cabildo, will be pleased with their rainfall - and it’s been cats and dogs on the other islands as well. This week’s downpour has brought joy to residents. I’m sure the holiday-makers must think we are mad. And I must agree! I just don’t get it, either. A one-off shower makes a nice change, just like the odd snowfall in the winter, I guess. But to feel disappointed when there hasn’t been thunder, lightning and floods? On our small little Island, those three little devils often cause lasting problems, especially in the smaller communities on higher ground. It’s the same with those who think it would be fun in a hurricane. Funny world, isn’t it!

This figure has grown steadily over the last five years, but the market is changing. Initially, the all-inclusive sector was associated with low-quality, lowcost tourism. But gradually, this has changed as holiday-makers seek more for their money. The all-inclusive subject is highly controversial, but, says Jorge Marichal, President of the Hotel Association and Extrahotelera for Tenerife (Ashotel): “If we do not offer it, they will go to another destination that does.”
While the number of people taking AI has increased over the last few years, the percentage is still much lower than other competing destinations, which can reach 100%. And within the archipelago itself, there are big differences. According to the latest data on tourism expenditure from Istac, AI accounts for almost 55% of tour-
ists in Fuerteventura, while it is under 15%.in La Palma. Lanzarote has 34%, Gran Canaria 28% and Tenerife the same figure. By nationality, the survey reveals that 41% of the Germans come to the Canaries for AI, compared with 24% of the Nordic tourists. The level of expenditure on arrival of tourists from the all-inclusive is well below that
of other visitors: some 191.12 euros compared with 431.36 euros, according to Istac’s survey of tourist spending. And these stunning figures have revealed the Achilles heel for those in favour of AI. The fact that tourists stay in a hotel to eat and drink closes the door to local restaurants and entertainment venues outside the hotel.
Home-owners switch on solar power bonus JOSÉ Manuel Soria, Spain’s Industry Ministry, has revealed that his department will lower the charges it was to have imposed on those who install solar panels to generate electricity for their own use.
Those with installations producing up to 10 kilowatts will be exempt from a tax on electricity generated outside the national grid. But they will still have to pay a toll to cover maintenance of the system, and other costs faced by Spain’s electricity companies. The modification, in-
troduced to the latest version of legislation covering the use of renewable energies, is set to be approved next month. It will affect the production of solar power only for residences and small offices or stores. Larger companies aiming to make savings from selfgeneration using bigger installations will have to continue paying both taxes. The move is a response to widespread opposition to the legislation’s so-called “support toll,” or tax on domestic and business producers of solar and wind energy, who want to supply the national grid with their surplus electricity. The proposals’ first draft was made public a year ago and, either ef-
fectively put an end to many people’s plans to install solar panels, or prompted them to go ahead without registering them officially. Manual Soria says ending the planned tax on domestic producers of solar energy “is a tax break that other consumers will have to pay for”. That’s because selfgenerators do not pay the sales tax, and other levies on the energy they generate, and because “they are benefiting from the national grid as a back up, even if they do not consume energy from it,” said the Industry Minister. The latest amendments to the draft proposals will also reduce paperwork needed to install solar panels, par-
ticularly the required viability study for connecting to the national grid. That can cost up to 1,000 euros when there is a device that prevents surplus energy from being fed into the national grid. Self-generators who meet the required criteria will also benefit from discount rates for those low-income households which contract under three kilowatts of power. At the same time, exemptions and discounts on the self-generation tax will be available in the Canary Islands, the Balearics, and the Moroccan enclaves of Ceuta and Melillas, regardless of how much generating capacity is installed.

Jobless tally falling again THE jobless total fell last month in the Canary Islands by 4,317, which is 1.74% less than in June, according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security.
So far this year, the toll has fallen by 24,516 people on the islands, 9.13% less than last year. And the total number of unemployed stands at 243,906. Unemployment fell in July in all the autonomies except Extremadura and Andalusia.
And in the whole of Spain, the number of registered jobless in the public employment services fell in July for the sixth consecutive month, and did so by 74,028 people, hitting a 4,046,276 total. In relative terms, the main decline occurred in Galicia, with 5.54% less; followed by Ceuta, which was 3.85%, and Asturias, where the fall was 2.99%. Compared with July 2014, unemployment fell in all communities, especially in Cataluña, with 66,446 fewer unemployed; Madrid, down by 51,317; Valencia, with 50,219 less, and Andalusia, where the fall was 37,074.
El Hierro is blowing hot! THE hydro-wind power plant of El Hierro reached a record high this week as it catered for the island’s entire electricity demand.
It is the first time the renewable energy source has generated 100% of the island’s insular electricity. “It is a fact of utmost importance for both the islanders and to the
SPAIN is back in the doghouse as Britain flexes its political muscles, accusing the country of unlawfully entering British Gibraltar Territorial Waters “repeatedly” at the weekend.
Spanish state vessels were said by the UK Government to have violated British sovereignty, apparently while chasing suspected drug-smugglers off the coast of Gibraltar on Sunday. The Royal Navy was used to escort Spain’s drugs-and-moneylaundering squad out of Gibraltar waters fol-
Canary Islands, Europe and the World, that we show it can be achieved, said Belén Allende, El Hierro Cabildo President. “And 100% with sole, clean sources in an isolated system! This promotes renewable energy without the need for consuming fossil fuels.” After a couple of months of trials, diesel engines were turned off this week for the first time, giving way to hydro-wind power.
Bull-run film man meets grisly death
AN attempt to film a traditional bull-run festival on his mobile phone led to the death of Spaniard David Mellado Lopez at the weekend.
The 32-year-old was recording a video of a bull lying on the ground motionless after a collision with another bull, when he was attacked by a third animal he hadn’t seen running at him. The bull cornered Mellado Lopez, pinning him against the wall of a home at the edge of the designated bull-run route. He was tossed into the air “like a puppet” and gored repeatedly, including once in the neck, as spectators watched on helplessly. The shocking incident happened during a night-time bull-run at around 1.40am on Sunday in the town of Villaseca de la Sagra, near Toledo, south of Madrid. Mellado Lopez received emergency medical attention in the town’s bullring before being transferred to Toledo’s Hospital Virgen de la Salud. He died around 6am,
after medics stabilised a massive wound in his throat, from which he was haemorrhaging. A 41-year-old carpenter was killed during a 2010 bull run in the same town. David, who lived in nearby Villasequilla, had gone to the bull-run with friends. He had left a protected area, which was closed off with metal bars, to video the aftermath of a collision between two bulls, which appeared to have left one unconscious. Juan Jose Losana, who saw the incident, said: “He looked like a puppet spinning around in the air because he
didn’t fall to the ground. He was off-guard and was carried along with the bull. It was an accident.” Martin Capilla, the first doctor to try to save him, said: “I told his brother when he went to hospital that he had a very serious injury. He was given two litres of blood before he died.” The town’s Mayor, Jesus Hijosa, urged revellers to take care when attending such events. “This sends shivers down our spine. We organise these events as a tradition, so that people can enjoy them, but these things happen.”
Spain in the wars again lowing the confrontation. Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire said: “These repeated incursions are a clear violation of UK Sovereignty by another EU country, and we will be raising this as a matter of urgency with the Spanish authorities.” He added: “It is completely unacceptable and unlawful, under the international law of the sea, to enter our waters without notifying us.” Spanish vessels are
thought to have crossed into the waters around Gibraltar several times over last weekend. In one incident, they are said to have been pursuing smugglers, who dumped bales of drugs from a highspeed inflatable boat as they entered British territory. On another occasion, witnesses said a Spanish helicopter flew over the Sandy Bay beach area - a move Gibraltar’s government called “extremely dangerous”.
The Gibraltarian authorities claimed one suspected drug-smuggler may have escaped because Spain failed to inform them of the chase. The territory’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, told Sky News the incursion was “a regretful incident, in particular, because one of the drug-smugglers got away”. He had earlier denounced the incident as an illegal and dangerous display of “bravado”.
Picardo added: “I am sure I am speaking for the whole of Gibraltar when I say that we consider this has been a serious and unnecessary failure on the part of the Spanish SVA, which has had outrageous consequences in respect of the violation of our sovereignty.” A Spanish Foreign Ministry said: “The waters are Spanish. It was Spanish boats patrolling in Spanish waters to control illegal activi-
He added: “Bulls are dangerous animals and when there are a lot of people, some don’t pay attention. You have to have your wits about you.” Bachelor David lived with his grandfather and an uncle and did odd jobs to meet ends meet. Two summers ago, he worked as a lifeguard at his local swimming pool. Villasequilla Mayoress Elena Fernandez said: “Friends have said he never took part in the bull-runs, and that it was just bad luck he decided to record the video on his mobile and leave the protected area. It’s a tragic and stupid death.” Villaseca de la Sagra is one of many towns across Spain which host annual festivals, in which crowds of people run ahead of a herd of bulls. The most famous event of its kind is in Pamplona, where 15 people have been killed in the runs - called encierros - in the northern Spanish city since 1911. Eleven people were taken to hospital on the first day of this year’s Pamplona Festival last month, including a 30-year-old Briton. But, happily, there were no fatalities. ties, such as tobacco smuggling or illegal fishing.” The episode has reignited tensions over the peninsula, which has a population of 30,000 and was ceded to Britain 300 years ago - though Spain still lays claim to it. In April 2014, the Spanish Ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Office after another state research vessel entered the territory’s waters, accompanied by a police boat. A year earlier, Spain tightened up its checks on travellers crossing the border to Gibraltar, which led to delays of several hours. It followed a diplomatic row over an artificial reef built by Gibraltar, provoking anger from Spanish fisherman.

Police reel in drugs’ gang SPANISH Police, after a longstanding operation, have arrested 34 suspected members of a drug- smuggling gang based in Colombia.
They were said to smuggle drugs between the two countries, revealed police, who carried out the arrests in Madrid, the Basque Country and Cantabria in the north, and the Balearic islands in the Mediterranean. Sixteen Colombian nationals and seven Spaniards are among those arrested by Spain’s Guardia Civil police force as part of the operation, which began in April 2014 after they were tipped off that a Santander bar was selling drugs. A police statement said that an investigation concluded that the man who ran the bar “belonged to a criminal
organisation run out of Colombia, which had a base of operations in Madrid from where it distributed drugs.” Police suspect the ring distributed drugs to other smaller drug-traffickers and to consumers at the bar, which was also used to launder money earned from the drug trading In searches of 17 homes carried out across the country, the authorities seized 13 kilos (29lbs) of dry marijuana, 25 marijuana plants and a kilo of cocaine, as well
as synthetic drugs like speed and crystal meth. They also dismantled a drugs laboratory in one of the homes searched. The statement concluded: “The members of the ring had extensive knowledge of policing, and the technical means used to detect the surveillance which they could be subject to.” Spain’s close ties to its former colonies in Latin America have made it a key entry point for cocaine smuggled across the Atlantic to Europe.
Booming Gatwick may still miss out GATWICK had its busiest July with 4.3 million passengers - a 6.4% increase on last year - the West Sussex airport has revealed.
An extra 260,000 passengers used the airport, compared with the same month in 2014, mainly because of an increase in long-haul flights and larger aircraft. In June, Gatwick said it had the busiest year in its history, claiming it proved its case for a second runway. But the Airports Commission has since backed a new Heathrow runway instead. Gatwick, which has now experienced 2½ years of consecutive month-on-month growth, said demand for
long-haul flights to New York, Los Angeles, Cape Verde, Trinidad and Costa Rica had contributed to the increased passenger numbers. The Sussex airport has been in competition with Heathrow to be allowed to build a new runway to increase air capacity in the South East. But the Airports Commission announced last month it was recommending a third runway at Heathrow, after more than two years’ deliberation. It said the third runway would add £147bn in economic growth, create over 70,000 jobs and add daily services to around 40 new destinations. The final decision on which airport will get the new runway will be made by the Government by the end of the year.
Gatwick’s chief executive, Stewart Wingate, said the July figures showed his airport remained the best location for the new runway. “These results put us 10 years ahead of the forecasts used by the Airports Commission to predict future air-traffic movements,” he said. “Our growth in the last 12 months is actually more than the commission concluded could be added at Gatwick in the first year of a new runway. “This is further proof of the flaws in the Airports Commission analysis, and shows its conclusions are fast unravelling.” A spokesman for the commission said: “All forecasts in the Airports Commission final report were subject to extensive analysis, and we are confident that they are fit for purpose.”

Bee-killers’ deady trap THE spread of bee-killing Asian hornets across Europe could be curtailed extensively by a carnivorous North American plant, which lures them to destruction.
French expert Romaric Perrocheau, head of a botanical garden in Nantes, western France, says the pitcher plant Sarracenia devours Asian hornets - but not European hornets; nor does it eat bees or wasps. Perrocheau, who recently found a Sarracenia stem full of dead
hornets, said Sarracenia had “invented a very selective trap” for the aggressive Asian hornets. The hornets are apparently attracted by Sarracenia’s nectar and pheromones - a chemical which triggers social responses - on the plant’s tubular leaves. Once the hornet crawls inside the rim at the top, it slips easily and plunges into the pitcher, to be digested by the plant’s juices. The trap appears to be a European adaptation because Asian hornets do not exist in Sarracenia’s native Massachusetts, in the eastern US. The plant can be grown easily in Europe and is not considered
a threat to native flora. Mr Perrocheau and an entomologist aim to study the contents of 200 pitchers, hoping to identify the chemical secret of their attraction for Asian hornets. Swarming Asian hornets can quickly wipe out bee colonies, but the long tubes of Sarracenia give hornets no escape once trapped The insects - Vespa velutina nigrithorax - are a threat to honeybees in France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany and Belgium. They were first spotted in France in 2004, but their native habitat is the Shanghai region of China. And hornet stings have even proved fatal to humans in some
cases because of allergic reactions. Each Sarracenia plant has up to 15 pitchers, and can attract as many as 50 hornets. But a typical hornet’s nest houses 4,000 insects - so by themselves, the plants
SEVERAL protesters were arrested after police clashed with migrants following the death of a Senegalese man.
Catalan regional police said a 50-year-old died at the Spanish seaside resort of Salou on Tuesday after police entered an apartment as part of a crack-down on the sale of fake DVDs and other counterfeit goods. As they made their way through the apartment, the man jumped to his death from a third-floor balcony. Police were planning to arrest him as part of a dawn raid on the homes of three people. suspected of selling fake merchandise, said spokesman Xavier Gámez, who
added that no words were exchanged, and there was no altercation. The death sparked protests by more than 100 migrants in Salou, south of Barcelona, with some of them hurling rocks at police officers and blocking railway lines with rubbish bins. Others carried signs calling the Catalan police “savages” and blaming them for the man’s death. Police responded by firing blanks and foam projectiles to disperse the crowds. At least 16 people were reportedly injured in the clashes, including 10 police officers. The protests spilled over into the centre of the resort town at the peak of the tourist season, with one tourist reportedly injured. The police raid was part
of a wider campaign by the authorities to tackle the sale of fake goods and counterfeit designer items, often sold by migrants on the streets of Spain. Jaume Asens, a Barcelona en Comú politician, offered his condolences over the death, describing the man on Twitter as “the first victim of the criminalisation of the poor this summer”. Asens later clarified that he wasn’t pointing his finger at the police, but was seeking to highlight how society had turned its back on the issues facing these migrants. “Police are simply obeying the orders of a society that doesn’t want to tackle problems like these,” he said. “We’ve learned to live alongside barbarity.”
toriously difficult to find and destroy, however. They are often hidden high up in trees or in underground hollows. Thankfully for beekeepers, European hornets do not pose such a threat to bees.
Brit cops muck in to keep Magaluf sober IN an attempt to help combat problems caused by drunken Brit holiday-makers, UK policemen have begun patrolling Magaluf with their Spanish counterparts.
The officers will work there throughout this week, before spending a similar period in Ibiza’s San Antonio. The small group of officers will initially act as a liaison between Spanish police and young Britons.

Magaluf, visited by around one million UK tourists every year, has been dubbed “Shagaluf” because of the antics of holidaymakers. Last summer, footage of a 21-year-old woman from Northern Ireland performing sex acts on 24 men in exchange for a drink went viral - and sparked outrage. The Majorcan town has been trying to improve its image and crack down on drunkenness and debauchery with new rules, which were effected in June. But the Brits have defied the new regula-
tions, which include a ban on drinking alcohol on the street between 10pm and 8am, and restrictions on their notorious bar crawls. The resort also threatens fines of up to 3,000 euros or people found naked, or urinating in the street. Some bars along the Punta Ballena strip, where most of the booze-fuelled action takes place, have put up signs with messages such as “no alcohol permitted in the street” and “drink with moderation”. But, in many cases so far, to no avail.

Russia steps up their sanctions RUSSIA has pledged to increase its battle against parmesan cheese and other European “delicacies” by destroying contraband shipments on the border as soon as they are discovered. Last year, President Vladimir Putin banned cheese, meat and vegetable imports from the EU and other countries who have imposed sanctions over Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The move has hit the agricultural sectors of many European countries. But at the same time, It has also restricted the food choices in Russia and driven up prices there. President Putin last week signed the decree ordering the incineration of food which breaches sanctions. Officially, it came into force yesterday (Thursday) and products must be destroyed in front of witnesses. Also, the physical act should be captured on video, to preclude corruption. Footage shown on state television shows that the authorities had begun the process earlier in the week. “An operation to liquidate dozens of tons of contraband pork has taken place,” a news anchor announced on Tuesday evening, followed by footage of triumphant customs officials apparently unveiling a huge consignment of “Ukrainian” pork fat, which was actually a Danish product with fake labels. A total of 35 tonnes of pork, in blue containers, was thrown into incinerators, which must have been heart-breaking for the hundreds of thousands of Russians literally starving. Yulia Melano, spokesperson for the Russian food standards watchdog, said 114kg of pork product with Brazilian labelling was seized on the border with Kazakhstan. Customs authorities determined that the probable origin was an EU country, so it was ground down to make livestock feed. An online petition, calling on the Kremlin to rethink the law, has been signed by more than 170,000 people, saying it is grotesque to destroy food in a country where millions still live
below the poverty line. The petition asks: “Why should we destroy food we could use to feed war veterans, pensioners, the disabled, families with many children, or people who suffered in natural disasters?” Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said the President had signed the law, and that meant an end of discussion for now. But Russians are still allowed to bring parmesan and other banned items into the country themselves for personal use. The government has said the ban will give Russian manufacturers a chance to enter the market and shine. But local producers have struggled to make European cheese analogues, while overall prices have gone up. And food is not the only sector to suffer. From Monday, there will be increased checks on Dutch flowers arriving in Russia, following claims that some of them contained bugs and parasites. A news bulletin said: “Now all Dutch flowers will be examined with a microscope at the border, and Russian flower-growers will be given their chance to develop their market.” Under discussion is a further set of bans, which would restrict the import of a number of medical items, including X-ray machines, tampons and condoms. The proposals, first suggested by the Ministry of Trade and Industry on Tuesday, have already been met positively by some Russian officials. Gennady Onishchenko, Russia’s former top medical official, said: “A ban on the import of condoms would make people more disciplined, more strict and discriminating in choosing partners, and maybe would do a favour to our society by helping to solve demographic problems.” Russia has one of the world’s fastest growing HIV epidemics and, following outrage and amusement on social networks, the ministry clarified that only government purchases of condoms would be affected, which account for just 2% of the country’s market.
New NZ flag won’t have union flag THERE’S was no sign of a Union flag when New Zealand drew up a short-list of 40 possible designs for a new national flag.
Its 112-year-old flag is under threat as New Zealand’s 4.5 million citizens are offered a chance to ditch it, during a process involving two referendums costing more than £10.6m. The designs were chosen by the Flag Consideration Panel from more than 10,000 submitted by the public, among them those most anticipated: the silver fern, the koru (a fern motif used in Maori art) and the stars of the Southern Cross. Among the motivations put forward for changing the flag are the current one’s similarity to the UK, binding the country to its colonial past. Even worse, in the eyes of some Kiwis, is that their flag is often confused with that flown by the Australian neighbours. New Zealand has long had a reputation for being willing to break with tradition and try something new. But many traditionalists are asking: “Why must we change?” Just 739 people across the country turned up to public meetings to hear about the project, which has been described by opposition Labour party
leader Andrew Little as a “hugely-expensive, highly-unpopular vanity project”. The Returned and Services Association, which represents military veterans, says a change would dishonour the memory of those who fought for their country. And when a NZ current affairs TV programme ran a survey on the issue, 84% said the country didn’t need a new flag. But Prime Minister John Key is really keen, telling a local radio station a few days ago that having a new flag is “gonna be worth billions over time through people
“recognising and buying our products”. Panel chairman John Burrows said he and his colleagues had “investigated every submission” before deciding unanimously on the 40 designs. He added: “In reviewing alternatives, we were told that a potential new flag should unmistakably be from New Zealand, and celebrate us as a progressive, inclusive nation, connected to its environment with a sense of its past and vision for its future.” He said the designs needed to be timeless, should work in a
variety of contexts, simple, uncluttered, balanced and “have good contrast”. The 40-strong list of suggestions was praised by the Silver Fern Flag group, which approves of five of the designs, saying the fern “screams New Zealand”. The chosen designs will now be examined to make sure they don’t breach any copyright laws before the panel chooses four to be subject of a national referendum next month. The most popular design of the four will then go head-to-head with the current flag next March.
But the Judicial Police (PJ) Portuguese, is not offering too many details yet. The company, led by Portuguese Rui Pires Salvador, recruited people with the promise that they would get a return of 350% on their investments through viewing Internet ads. The case is also being investigated in Spain, where a platform for
those affected has been created to try to recover the investments which have been lost. In Portugal, the association defending consumers is called the DECO, whose spokesperson said: “We wrote several letters and emails to find out what the problems have been with the company. “But these pyramid schemes do not usually generate
many complaints because the victims feel shame for what happened, or still have hope of recovering their money. “These schemes are very common, but if those affected do not undertake any action, they will never get their money. We advise them to contact the authorities and report what happened.”
Pyramid plot hits up to two million PORTUGUESE police are investigating a plot developed by a company called LibertaGia, which operated a pyramid scheme.
It has defrauding at least 1.8 million people worldwide, including tens of thousands of Spaniards.

FARMING unions have held an emergency meeting to warn of the “financial devastation” threatening dairy and livestock farmers.
Falling lamb and milk prices have led to protests around the country, including one last weekend which featured two heifers herded into a Stafford supermarket. The National Farmers Union (NFU) is calling on all supermarkets and retailers to be “clear and transparent” in their pricing of milk, to make sure people know how little farmers are paid. Some supermarkets are paying around 3033p per litre but others, including Asda, are paying as little as 23p. One protester told shoppers: “The reason we are doing this is because the milk is far too cheap. If the milk stock is this cheap in six months, there will be no fresh milk in this country. “We are packing up because we cannot afford to sell milk at this price. This milk should not be cheaper than bottled water.”
Milk row boils over
The protesters cleared the supermarket shelves of all its milk - an action called the “Milk Trolley Challenge”, which has been happening at stores around the UK. All the milk on the shelves is bought up, then either given away to customers outside the store or sold for a nominal fee and the money donated to charity. When police arrived at the Stafford Asda, the protesters became annoyed when an officer touched one of the cows. “You’re going to upset him,” a man tells a WPC, who responds: “You need to get it out right now.” Around 200 dairy producers have left the industry since January, according to the NFU. Farmers say they need to be paid at least 30p a litre of milk to cover their costs. But they
were paid an average 23.66p for a litre of milk in June, according to British dairy organisation AHDB Dairy. Last week, several UK milk wholesalers cut
prices by 0.8p per litre, taking the price paid to some farmers to below 23p. Meurig Raymond, NFU President, told Sky News that farm-
ers could be put out of business in the next few months. Mr Raymond said: “The farming industry gets support via the common agricultural
15 CW
policy to take out some of the volatility that we see in market prices. “But at the present time, even with that support, farmers are still losing 8-10 pence a litre on their milk that’s being produced. “The average dairy farmer is producing about 2,500 litres of milk per day. You can easily work out how much the average farmer is losing, and that’s why a lot of dairy farmers are going to make some big decisions in the next few months.” A Morrisons’ spokesman said: “We are not seeking any further reductions in milk prices, and we will continue our talks with the NFU, in a constructive manner, to finalise our agreed plan of action.” Lidl said: “Our cost prices are in no way linked to our retail prices, and any reductions in retail prices are absorbed by Lidl.” A British Retail Consortium spokesman said: “The retail industry pays a fair price, with individual retailers using different payment models. We understand the current frustration of farmers, but it is wrong to blame retailers.”

14th August - 20th August 2015
Canaries’ housing law is suspended possession of the banks’ houses to avoid eviction of people subject to a foreclosure order. The Court’s ruling, dated 21st July, reaffirmed its own decision, taken a few months earlier in April. In one of my previous columns, I wrote about the function of Constitutional Court, which is the control of laws approved by the Legislative Power (Parlia-
ment), nullifying them when they are in breach of Constitution. The Housing Law of Canary Island declared the social function of houses, and the obligation to include inhabited houses on a special registry, with sanctions to companies including expropriation, in order to avoid evictions. The Constitutional Court decided in April
to suspend the application of the law, which should be ratified within five months, and that is what happened in July. The decision was rubber-stamped, based on similar decisions against laws dictated by other Autonomous Communities. The Constitutional Court said it would cause damage if the Law were applied. The appli-
cation could be seen as a risk for the banking restructuration, which has demanded the use of public money, despite the eventual contradiction between two types of Laws: the Spanish State Law and the Canary Autonomous Community Law. The resolution is a reminder that the Spanish Government has approved laws that protect the interest of people in
danger of being evicted. The Canary Housing Law stresses the obligation of owners to use the properties to live in - probably impossible in the cases of companies (banks) and, consequently, in breach of the Constitutional right of property. Rwanda spy chief is freed AN attempt to extradite Rwanda’s spy chief to Spain to stand trial for his alleged role in massacres after a 1994 genocide in his country has been foiled - by a London court.
General Karenzi Karake was on bail in the UK following his June arrest on a warrant issued by Spain, amid claims that he was there to meet senior British intelligence officers. He was apprehended at Heathrow under a European Arrest Warrant on behalf of Spanish authorities, accusing him of ordering the Rwanda 1994 massacres. The arrest of the 54-year-old caused diplomatic relations between the UK and Rwanda to come under tremendous strain, amid claims that he was in the UK last month to meet MI6 spy chief Alex Younger. Two days later, he was seized there after a Spanish judge indicted Gen Karake in 2008 for alleged war crimes. He never attended the meeting with MI6 and, after a brief period, he was granted £1m bail by Westminster magistrates
ahead of a full extradition hearing. The UK ruling was welcomed by Rwanda’s Justice Minister Johnston Busingye, who claimed Gen Karake had been the victim of “an unjust case”. Louise Mushikiwabo, Rwanda’s Foreign Minister, was “delighted” he was returning to Rwanda, writing on Twitter: “This was an unnecessary and abusive process.” Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame had
strongly condemned Gen Karake’s arrest, saying the UK was showing a “colonial” mentality. Spanish authorities wanted to put him on trial on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and terrorism, including the 1997 killing of Spanish aid workers. Rwanda has always maintained that Gen Karake was innocent, and that the charges were politically motivated.

IF, unlike many of our clients, you did not transfer your Teacher´s, NHS, or any other unfunded Public Sector Pension away from the UK, before 5th April this year, you will have been informed that all transfers away from these types of pensions have now ceased.
Let´s be very clear about the Government’s reasons for closing this loophole. Consider the possibility that all members who have provision in these types of pension pots wish to transfer out. And there are several reasons why somebody would see the benefit in
14th August - 20th August 2015
It’s not too late! this, including flexibility in accessing your fund, passing on your pot to your beneficiaries, etc. Bear in mind, for example, that a 10-year pot will amount to around £80,000, so you can imagine the scale of monies HMRC envisage leaving the confines of the UK - a scary thought! Now we begin to understand the reason for removing the ability to choose what YOU want to do with YOUR pension if you are no longer bound by the UK rules! Interestingly, however, the transfer ban does not apply if a transfer is made to a non-occupational scheme, which is in the European Economic Area. Therefore, it may be possible still to put YOUR pension where it will be most effective for YOU. A note on the Teachers’ scheme website says: “Teachers’ Pensions are writing to members whose application to discharge their benefits to such a scheme was received by Teachers’ Pensions on or after 6th April 2015.
“The letter will include new discharge forms and will ask members to complete and return the discharge paperwork if they still wish to proceed with the transfer.” The note adds that if members still want to proceed with a transfer, they must do so before the Treasury takes action to close the loophole. A Treasury spokeswoman confirms that it is working on rule changes to extend the transfer ban. But as yet,
we do not know when these changes will take place. It says: “We are clear that the transfer restrictions from unfunded public service pension schemes should apply to transfers to Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes, including those based in the European Economic Area.” In July, HMRC cut thousands of schemes from its ROPS’ (Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme) list of overseas plans, following rule changes that disqualify
schemes with early access mechanisms. There are, however, still many ROPS plans available. Alternatively, if you´re unsure about transferring your plan out of the UK, and this is perfectly understandable, there are other alternative UK-based SIPP schemes which, in many cases, can prove beneficial. If you are an expat, and have a non-funded Public Sector Pension in the UK and are not sure about the best route for you, ask an ex-
pert free, no obligation, no consultation fee. And if your pension would be better left where it is, you´ll be the first to know about it. Please note: HMRC are attempting to close this loophole so the above information may not be applicable to all transfers. Google’s new Alphabet! GOOGLE has created a parent company called Alphabet Inc, which will take care of such entities as the investment and research divisions.
But Google, under the surprise re-branding, will retain its bestknown businesses, such as search, apps, YouTube and Android. Other divisions, like the “smart-home” unit Nest, and the drone arm, will be run under Alphabet. Google founder Larry Page believes it will create a simplified structure for what had become a diverse group of businesses. “This new structure will allow us to keep tremendous focus on the extraordinary opportunities we have inside of Google,” he said in the blogpost. “Our company is op-
erating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable. “The whole point is that Alphabet companies should have independence and develop their own brands.” Mr Page will become Alphabet Chief Executive, with senior VicePresident Sundar Pichai becoming CEO of Google. Mr Page’s fellow Google co-founder Sergey Brin will become Alphabet President, while Google Chairman
Eric Schmidt will be Executive Chairman of the holding company. Ruth Porat, Google’s new Chief Financial Officer, will hold the same title for both Google and Alphabet. Colin Gillis, BGC Partners’ Investment Analyst, said the new structure should give investors greater clarity on strategy and how much Google was spending on new products. “There’s been a lot of speculation about how much money they put into these other
ventures,” said Mr Gillis. “That will come to an end. This also gives them the structure to add in another business line if they were to acquire something. The mechanism is in place.” The name Alphabet was chosen for two reasons, said Mr Page. “It represents language, and the core of how we index with Google search, and because Alpha-bet means investment return above benchmark, which we strive to do.”

Thursday 20th August, BBC1, 21.00 British-born Jane Seymour is an award winning Hollywood actress and lives in Malibu, California. She shot to fame as Bond girl Solitaire in Live And Let Die, and went on to star as Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman. She has played historical figures such as Wallace Simpson, Marie Antoinette and a Jewish mother fleeing the Nazis in the drama series War And Remembrance. She has earned an Emmy award, two Golden Globe Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was awarded an OBE in 2000. Jane was born Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Frankenberg and knows that there is Jewish ancestry on her father’s side of the family - but beyond this knows very little. She suspects that they suffered in the Holocaust, but has never known what happened. “I really care about memories and I want to know more than just the names and the dates of birth and the family tree. I know that some really extraordinary things must have happened to them, especially my Jewish family, the Polish family. I want to know more than just their names.” Jane is keen to find out about her Jewish great aunts Michaela and Jadwiga and their experiences under Nazi occupation. Jane’s search for the truth takes her to Warsaw where she discovers that although Jadwiga managed to escape the ghetto she was tragically separated from her family; and to France where she follows Michaela and her family in a terrifying flight to Switzerland as they flee the Nazis. “To have survived so much, to have had the strength to keep going, the strength to lose your husband, the strength to not know where your children are, the strength to go on this unbelievable journey, and then when you are finally safe and you’re with your sister… to just give up. “This has just been the most incredible experience for me to learn about Jadwiga and Michaela’s stories. I realise that in my family were two incredibly strong women that survived against all odds. I think the fact that I had the privilege of following both of their stories and that they actually found each other at the end. It’s about the indomitable human spirit.

Tony Robinson hikes up from Lyme Regis on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast to the Somerset Levels in the footsteps of a ragtag rebel army led by the dashing young Duke of Monmouth, the illegitimate son of Charles II. He sailed in from Holland round Lyme’s famous Cobb with a handful of soldiers. He believed that the people would support him in overthrowing the newly crowned James II, who was also Monmouth’s uncle, but, more importantly, Roman Catholic. The year was 1685 and the country was riven by antiCatholic feeling mixed up with a strong dash of revolutionary zeal. Monmouth marched through the fiercely independent towns of Devon, gathering support from artisans and farmworkers. Meeting up with Billy Bragg in Colyton, Tony learns something about the kind of people prepared to risk their lives for this cause.

In N or M? Major Carter commandeers Tommy for a mission he must keep completely secret, even from Tuppence. There is a leak on the Third Floor and Tommy is the only man Carter can trust. A British scientist, Gilbert Worthing (pictured), who was working on a top-secret prototype for a nuclear bomb, has gone missing from a military base in Cromer, along with his work. All Tommy knows is that the perpetrator is staying at the nearby Sans Souci guesthouse and is most likely a Soviet superspy code named N... or is it M? Tommy must travel in disguise as a birdwatcher to Cromer, in order to identify which guest at the Sans Souci is holding the British government to ransom. Things get even more complicated when it turns out that Tuppence, dismayed at being left out, has beaten him to it and already ingratiated herself with the other guests. But Tommy and Tuppence must learn to work together again if they are going to identify the Soviet spy, save the missing scientist, and discover the location of the missing bomb before half of Norfolk is obliterated.

Nature Nuts with Julian Clary ITV1, 19.00 Since moving to the countryside, Britain’s most beloved camp comedian Julian Clary has become passionate about nature. In a brand new adventure, he goes in search of Britain’s most fanatical wildlife lovers, affectionately referred to as his ‘Nature Nuts’. Julian travels all over the UK for the three-part series, discovering an extraordinary range of nature fans obsessed by the creatures in their backyards and beyond. Julian and his expert film crew, boasting some of the UK’s most talented natural history cameramen and women, play fairy godmother to our Nature Nuts by capturing sight of their favourite creatures in ways they’ve never seen before. With some of the best new technology including starlight, high speed, mini aerial and underwater cameras, the Nature Nuts are given once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch their favourite animals in their natural habitat. Jam-packed with Julian’s trademark humour, Nature Nuts is full of great characters and fantastic wildlife footage. Each week Julian meets a group of Nature Nuts and finds out about a wealth of wonderful wildlife species living in Britain. In this final episode, Julian waves goodbye to the West End and ventures into the wilds of Yorkshire in search of an artist whose intricate paintings are inspired by his snaps of the surrounding wildlife. Nature Nut Robert Fuller’s latest muse is the kestrel and he’s been trying to capture one in flight for some time, so Julian asks award-winning cameraman John Waters to step in. John’s high-speed equipment is just the ticket, it can record 1500 frames per second, with ordinary cameras managing just 25.

Julian remarks: “It is, quite frankly, the Beyoncé of the camera world.” Next, it’s up to the Scottish Highlands for a bathroom disco with a female fish-packer in pursuit of the elusive pine martin. Muirne Buchanan lives on Loch Torridon, 300 miles north of the Scottish border and her garden happens to be inhabited by these cat-sized cousins of the badger and the weasel. With just 3,000 left in the UK, they’re a rare sight and it’s up to John to get the sharp-toothed fellas on film. But, will they care for the custard creams that Julian and Muirne have so carefully laid out for them? Finally, our fairy godmother heads to Perth to catch up with Bob Smith, ‘The Beaver Man’, on a canoe. This Nature Nut has been hoping to see a baby beaver, also known as a kit, and Julian won’t stop until they’ve got the evidence they need to rest assured that this furry family’s lineage will continue.

The Scandalous Lady W BBC2, 21.00
Natalie Dormer (Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, The Tudors) leads a cast of British actors in this gripping 18th century drama, detailing the scandalous life of Seymour, Lady Worsley, who dared to leave her husband and elope with his best friend, Captain George Bisset, played by Aneurin Barnard (Cilla, The White Queen). Dormer plays the passionate, courageous Seymour, Lady Worsley, who escapes her troubled marriage only to find herself at the centre of a very public trial brought by her powerful husband Sir Richard Worsley, played by Shaun Evans (Endeavour, The Lost Weekend), who seeks compensation from her lover for the affair. As this extraordinary true story unfolds, Lady Worsley takes the brave decision to publicly expose the secrets of her marriage. The scandalous courtroom revelations challenge the hypocrisy of the law that brands a wife the property of her husband, calling into question the whole concept of a woman’s ‘worth’. Produced by Wall to Wall Media and directed by Sheree Folkson for BBC Two, the true story of Lady Worsley is brought to life by awardwinning writer David Eldridge. Eldridge based his screenplay on author Hallie Rubenhold’s book, Lady Worsley’s Whim. The book was inspired by the full length oil painting of Lady Worsley that hangs in Harewood House in Yorkshire. She is depicted wearing a bright red riding habit.

Carol Klein’s Plant Odysseys BBC2, 19:00 Four-part series exploring the inner secrets and botanical history of four favourite garden plants. In the fourth and final chapter of the series, Carol Klein takes a look at one of the most recognisable and influential flowers in our world, the waterlily. It is a plant of unlikely economic importance, spiritual significance and artistic inspiration. She travels to the Far East to investigate when and where some of the first flowering plants evolved, and discovers waterlilies are among the earliest branches of angiosperms still around today - practically living fossils. Carol visits the Buddhist temples of South Korea and drinks lotus flower tea with the monks. They revere the lotus, a close relative of the waterlily.

Flying to the Ends of the Earth Channel 4, 20:00
Arthur Williams flies in to Canada’s vast untamed wilderness. First he takes a 1930s flying boat upriver to grizzly bear country in the temperate Great Bear Rainforest. After landing his ten-tonne sea plane on the river, he discovers ancient rock art commemorating Native American chiefs of the local Kitasoo First Nations tribe, before getting close to a grizzly bear with scientists who live in the forests for six months at a time. Next Arthur hitches a lift with a supply plane to Wekweeti: a Native American community in the far north with no road access for most of the year. It was built in the sub-Arctic wilderness in the 1960s as a social experiment, to see if local First Nations people could be persuaded to live here, in their ancient hunting grounds, rather than moving to the cities.

Jackpot247 In their admissions tests at Bemrose, the private school pupils scored average reading ages of over 18 years old. By contrast, all the other entrants had English as a second-language and scored an average reading age of a seven-year-old. Xander goes into class with his Bemrose counterpart Brett, who says he likes messing about in lessons for fun. However, he says he realises how important education is. He says: “If I don’t get my head down at school, I’ll probably end up doing nothing with my life.” Jo, who took over at Bemrose in 2004 when it was a failing school and set about turning it around, has doubts about the quality of teaching in private schools. She says: “Some of the weakest teachers I have ever known have been recruited into the private sector to teach. Is it the case that because children perhaps are more compliant you can be more lazy in the way that you teach them?” Mark Mortimer agrees to teach a lesson during his week at the school. A history teacher, he takes on a first year GCSE group from a Bemrose teacher. Jon, meanwhile, gets his first taste of maths in the state sector. At Warminster, he has been entered for foundation level GCSE maths, meaning the top grade he can get is a C. But at Bemrose, teacher Mr Thomas, whose lessons Jon enjoys, says he would be in the top set and aiming for a grade A. Jon says: “When someone like that says something like that, it makes you feel so good, it’s great, it’s a really nice feeling inside. It just shows that state education doesn’t necessary mean worse education, it just means different and different can sometimes be good.” Meanwhile, private school girl Katy is invited home for dinner with Nazh and her family. Nazh, who was originally from Syria but moved to Britain in 2011, is ambitious and aims to become Prime Minister one day. She says: “There are some students who don’t really care what they do and how they succeed and if they are going to be successful or not. My parents believe in me, it makes me stronger. I’ve had that dream since I was a little girl. This might sound crazy, I want to go to Oxford or Cambridge - somewhere big.”
The House That £100k Built BBC2, 20:00 Sue and Tim. With people forced to find their own solution to the UK housing crisis, Kieran Long and Piers Taylor help novice builders discover ingenious ways to turn ordinary homes into extraordinary ones for under £100k. Having spent the last five years living in a caravan, Sue and Tim are setting out to prove they can build a low cost contemporary farmhouse without scrimping on aspiration. Their design is startlingly modern but their strategy to build it is a rustic no-frills one. Piers and Kieran are concerned that the cheap materials they plan to use could seriously compromise the success of the building. Kieran shocks Sue and Time with a stunning contemporary home in south London where the entire exterior is clad in black glass. The challenge then passes to Piers, who must help them achieve the look for less, but will thecombination of Sue’s forensic online bargain hunting and Piers’ ideas pull it off at a fraction of the cost?
Terror on Everest: Surviving the Nepal Earthquake Channel 4, 21:00 On Saturday 25 April 2015, a powerful earthquake, magnitude 7.8, devastated Nepal, killing more than 8000 people, leaving over a million homeless and causing catastrophic destruction of religious and historic monuments. The quake, which was Nepal’s worst in more than 80 years, caused a massive ice avalanche on Everest that killed a further 19 at Base Camp and left dozens more stranded in one of the world’s most inhospitable places. Using exclusive interviews and never-before-seen footage, much of it shot by the survivors themselves at the moments the quake and avalanche occurred, the programme documents the terrifying story, hearing from the people who lived through it. With the help of some of the world’s leading earthquake experts, it also reveals the science behind the disaster and looks at how such colossal damage and loss of life could be avoided in the future.

Drama about a team of retired detectives investigating unsolved crimes. Danny and Steve ‘welcome’ new boss Ted Case into the UCOS office in Sasha’s absence, but for all his wealth of experience, keen eye for detail and a killer instinct for detecting liars, they aren’t quite as sold on his superstitious quirks. While busy trying to work one another out, the team must tread carefully in the case of a brutally murdered vicar who received racist hate mail in the lead up to his death. With emotions running high it’s up to Ted to pull together his new unit and keep the peace within a dangerously fractured family in one of UCOS’s most sensitive cases yet. Elsewhere, a nervous Danny ends up bloodier than Fiona’s Beef Wellington when her parents come for dinner - while Steve sharpens up for his new boss.

Britain’s Spending Secrets BBC1, 21:00
TV presenter and journalist Anne Robinson sets off on a road trip to get up close and personal with people from across the wealth spectrum, and puts their spending habits under the microscope. In this episode she meets Charlotte, a single mum on benefits who has got into serious debt by spending beyond her means. She meets Alfie Best, a super-rich entrepreneur who only believes in spending on things which can make him more money, Baroness Jenkin, who inherited a passion for thriftiness along with her wealth, and Jedi, an eco-warrior who tries not to spend anything at all. Anne also gets two families to lay bare their finances to each other. The Addicots are a hard-working family earning £25,000 a year. They struggle to feed their family of six. What will they make of the Stevens family - a middle-class family earning £100,000 a year who spend hundreds a month on café lattes and thousands on holidays abroad and think that only private education will do for their children?

The Leopard’s Spots. Documentary following straight-talking scrapyard owner Terry and his glamorous wife Lyndsay as they fight for the future of their business and their family. Lyndsay has persuaded Terry to bring in a management consultant and he promises to be all ears. Meeting supervisors takes Terry out of his comfort zone. Over the next week, things start running better, until a friendly prank by a neighbouring yard results in everyone being showered in white powder. The yard is a total mess but that’s not the worst of it. The head of HR has heard that someone has been drinking on site and finds empty beer cans in Chris’s coat. It’s a big test of Terry’s new management approach. Chris’s breathalyser result is positive. After taking advice from the management consultant, Terry brings in random drink testing and things settle down.

The Wonder of Britain ITV1, 21.00
Our Countryside Story A brand new series for ITV celebrates some of the most impressive natural and manmade wonders that make Britain great. Julia Bradbury embarks on a stunning 12,000-mile journey around the country to some of Britain’s most spectacular locations and chooses some of the greatest assets she believes we should be most proud of. Taking in our industrial, natural and royal heritage, Julia’s scope encompasses rolling countryside, dramatic coastline, bird-filled archipelagos and deep dizzying gorges to beautifully eclectic buildings; from grand stately homes to cramped industrial era terraces. She investigates our industrial past and learns about how our engineering achievements re-shaped the world. Beautifully captured using the latest cameras and technology, combined with aerial and time-lapse photography, the Wonder of Britain is vividly brought to life. This final episode finds Julia exploring our beautiful and diverse countryside. From the dramatic volcanic past of the Isle of Skye to the towering cliffs of Cheddar Gorge and from a gorgeous lavender farm in Kent to one of Britain’s most stunning birds of prey, the barn owl. In her final wonder of the series, Julia revisits one of her favourite childhood places, Derbyshire’s Peak District, in the company of her Dad, the person who did the most to introduce her to our great outdoors.

Building the Ancient City BBC2, 20:00
Documentary series exploring the ancient cities of Athens and Rome. Professor WallaceHadrill explores how Athens gave birth to the idea of democracy 2,500 years ago. On our journey, we meet the people who still see ancient Athens as the model for running the great cities of today, including perhaps the ancient capital’s greatest champion in our modern one - Boris Johnson. We discover how the Greeks created the first system of open government, and wrote the first constitution that laid down the rights of Athenian citizens nearly 2,000 years before our Magna Carta. The only surviving ancient copy is found on a papyrus not in Greece or Rome, but hidden away at the British Library in London, and it has never been filmed before. Professor Wallace-Hadrill explains that it was this citizen-centric approach which created institutions that would build a city which was the envy of its day, with public libraries, public law courts, a public water supply and public space.

It is a perfect spot to live and nurture our wines. Built in 1956, the winery was modernised in 1983 but still holds the original oak barrels, nearly 200 years old, where the traditional red wine is left to ferment and mature. Ageold practices go hand in hand with modern-day technology. The winery accommodates all the grape harvesting requirements with its capacity to hold 160,000 litres.

Britain’s wasted food mountain! BRITAIN has the unenviable record of wasting more food than any other EU country, with each household dumping an average of 13lb weekly - much of it still edible.
A new study reveals that the EU wastes an estimated 22m tonnes of food each year - and most of it avoidable while Brits contribute some seven tonnes to that figure. And as much as half of all food produced in the world gets thrown away, amounting to more than two billion tonnes of waste each year. It is estimated that the carbon footprint generated by the
world’s food waste is more than twice that created by the road transportation industry in America. The study, published in the journal Environ-

mental Research Letters, looked at data from six European countries - the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Romania - to estimate
levels of food waste in the EU. Davy Vanham, lead researcher from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, said: “A lot of food
is still ‘good’, but it is thrown away when it passes its sell-by date.” A recent study by the UK’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IME) found that a number of factors were to blame for such staggering levels of waste, including poor harvesting, storage and transportation practices, overly strict sell-by dates, buy-one-getone free offers and the consumer demand for “cosmetically perfect” food. “This level of wastage is a tragedy that cannot continue if we are to succeed in sustainably meeting our future food demands,” warned the IME. Researchers calling for greater education argue that lowering wastage levels will save households money and reduce the impact on the environment. Politicians and supermarket bosses are also coming under increasing pressure to reduce Britain’s levels of waste. The UK Government has been urged to introduce legislation to ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying surplus stock, following a similar ruling in France. And it’s not just householders to blame because as much as
30% of Britain’s vegetable crops aren’t even harvested as their physical appearance doesn’t meet exacting standards. It means that millions of tonnes of edible food, especially fruits, vegetables and bread, are thrown away by supermarkets every year. As the cost of living and levels of waste soar, so skipping - lifting unwanted food from supermarket rubbish bins - is on the rise in Britain. The practice is technically illegal and, though some do it to make a moral statement, others simply cannot afford to buy enough to eat. Ultimately, though, the largest proportion of discarded food comes from households. Britain’s largest supermarkets already work with charities to redistribute surplus, edible food to local charities. But Sainsbury’s is alone in having a nationwide scheme in place, and MPs are preparing to debate the possibility of introducing legislation to tackle food waste. And, stress campaigners, despite the pressure on supermarkets, reducing waste in the home is the easiest way to limit the appalling waste.

We are giants in the land of small
By Vanessa Vee SUMMER is most definitely here, and summer camp is over. So that means a month of entertaining the little darlings to the fullest extent.
Somehow I managed to snatch a couple of days off work, so off we headed up to the North, namely Puerto de la Cruz. Years ago, I would frequent this town regularly. But as life moves on, there is just never the spare time any more. Even so, I am pleased to say I have fallen in love with Puerto all over again and will never leave it as long again for my next visit. We certainly managed to pack in plenty of activities and fun as bathing by the pool was not really an option because of the poor weather. At the end of our break, after check-out, we decided to visit a model village called Pueblochico, and this is what I am focusing on. I´ve always known of this place, but never really had an inkling to visit. But now we have young children, it seemed an ideal theme park to discover. Basically, Pueblochico is a miniature model park, based on the Canary Islands. And so we began the adventure of being a giant, which was so exciting for my kids, aged two and five. Inside this magical world, everything is smaller than us; a place where your dreams become bigger with each step you take. It
is where you find exact reproductions in a 1:25 scale of buildings and our most emblematic landscapes. Set in over 20,000sq.m of beautiful, endemic and exotic gardens, this model village is dedicated to the history of the islands, the rural areas, and the modern cities all competing for our attention. The miniature inhabitants and details are the “must” of PuebloChico ... and a leisurely walk around the park gives us time to take in everything. Pueblochico opened around year 2001 and replicates completely the places and points of interest, the main focus being on Tenerife. We step back in history to the Guanche era, take a look at the fabulous Santa Cruz Carnival and Tenerife Sur airport, complete with a moving aeroplane, sounds, people and vehicles. The La Laguna World Heritage site plays a large part, as does, of course, a superb reproduction of our very grand Mount Teide. I have hardly touched on what this park offers, but for a spare couple of hours, treat yourself. The original idea was inspired from Holland, Pueblochico collaborating with Madurodam. It’s completely in the open and you have to
ask: “What happens when it rains?” Apparently, the model-making process is just like building a surfboard. The items are not heavy and they are waterproof, with PVC and glass fibre used to give them strength. The village also has a new attraction: flying PuebloChico. It comprises 140 metres of zipline, so you can literally fly over the Canary Islands! Alas, it was closed during our visit but, potentially, it looks good fun! ChirinChico is the Canarian market where you can taste the tapas, BBQ and traditional cuisine, as well as buy some typical products and handcraft to take home. Next door also features an international restaurant and a Secret Garden, where you can have a relaxed lunch and enjoy the views from the open-air terrace: views to the Atlantic Ocean, and the Orotava Valley with Mount Teide just at the top! Once upon a time there was PuebloChico - a great little tribute to the Canary Islands! Pre-entry, open-dated tickets are available on www.tenerifesunshine. com or by visiting any Tenerife Sunshine office. Call 922 751 867 or email info@tenerife sunshine.com for further information.

TO MEN
MANY a time in the salon, I get asked by gents for haircuts they see in magazines or online. And many show me photos of previous haircuts they have had.
Lots of factors come into place when choosing a style for men. Just as with women, we ask questions about how you style your hair, and how long you spend on doing it. There’s no point in us creating something you can’t do at home because it’s just not going to work. Here in Tenerife, we have something else to contend with, and that’s the heat - especially now. On numerous occasions, I have been told by a client that he wants to grow his hair a little, only to be told on the next visit to cut it off as it’s too long. It’s all well and good thinking up a style, but you have to recreate this at home the next day. If you ask for something in particular, be prepared to follow our styling tips to help you achieve your look. This includes styling products and maintenance. If you have a “sharp” cut, you will need it cutting every three to four weeks. If you have more of a relaxed style, then every five to six. It all depends on the
amount of work you want to put in. I find that most men want something quick and simple., which takes seconds rather than minutes to do. But the cut has to be there if that’s what you want because, if not, the style won’t work for you. Hairdressing and barbering are not the same. If you choose a barber, don’t expect to be in there for longer than 10 minutes. You won’t get much of a consultation
or, maybe, not even a hair wash, so it’s up to you. Salons tend to take longer and are not so rushed. We take 20-30 minutes to style your hair, but each to his own. If your hair is a chore, it’s easier in the barbers, maybe. But if you prefer a little more of a relaxed experience, maybe it’s the salon for you. Having your hair cut, be it woman or man, shouldn’t be a rushed experience in my opinion. But at the end of the day we are all different - we all have choices. If you select a salon for a haircut, make sure you have some idea of what you want. And just like the ladies, don’t get stuck in a style rut and opt for the same thing time after time.

By Monica Dyson SCHOOL holidays seemed to last for ever when we were young - and if we were very lucky, we could look forward to a week at the seaside to break up the monotony.
Although it was all much different in those days, the anticipation of sand and sea is still the same for today’s children as it was for us. With no cheap, international flights in the Fifties, the most exotic destination anyone could aspire to was Torquay, on the South Coast of England, which had the promise of better weather and palm trees. But in reality, we went to places in the North like Blackpool, Bridlington and Scarborough. Staying in a hotel then was very much for the better-off and so, if you didn’t hire a caravan, you could look forward to the comparative austerity of a typical seaside boarding house. The landladies ruled with a rod of iron. You

had to be out of the premises by 9.30 each morning and back no earlier than 4.30pm, even if it were blowing a gale. Many a family spent the day sat in a shelter on the promenade. And the door was locked at 10.30pm prompt, which certainly put paid to any latenight entertainment, had there been any! Food was plain, with no choice of menu. The only choice you had was if you ate it or not. But you usually ate what was put in front of you in those days. You always shared a bathroom with a number of other families, which often meant no hot water by the time you got in to it. And on many occasions, when you were absolutely bursting to use the toilet, you had to wait for ages. Beach life was interesting to look back on. You could hire a deckchair, which always provided a diversion when your father tried to fathom out how to put it up. With no beach umbrellas, it was essential to carry windbreaks, complete with a large mallet
for knocking the pegs in. Can you imagine people today carrying them? They would be arrested! Not only did you take towels with which to dry yourself, but you also had a towel to get changed under. Your mother had adapted it by putting elastic or a drawstring through the top. It was interesting to watch people hopping around on one leg trying to put their underwear on! Sometimes, you would have a towel held up for you which at the last moment would be whipped away as a jolly jape! That caused great amusement for people around … and untold embarrassment for you! With no casual wear then, father usually wore a jacket, often with collar and tie, but he did make a concession to fresh air by rolling up his shirt sleeves and trouser legs. If he did decide to wear shorts, they would be
of the ex-war department, or Boy Scout type. And men really did knot all four corners of a handkerchief and use it to cover their head! Also, there were no jeans then. Men’s casual trousers were of the “slacks” variety. Mother wore a sleeveless top with V-neck and tucked her skirt into her knickers when she went for a paddle. I can’t remember exactly when my parents started to wear swimsuits. But when they did, my father’s were definitely budgie-smugglers and my mother’s swimsuit very demure! There was always so much to do on beaches. Burying your father or sibling in the sand was always a fun occupation. You could join in games of football or cricket with other families, build sand-castles which had flags of all nations on top. You certainly never thought you would ever visit any
of the countries. Usually, the first time you ever went on a horse was courtesy of the donkey rides - often the last in many cases! The donkeys were always called proper horse names like Neddy or Dobbin, although you would have much rather yours was called Silver or Scout, from The Lone Ranger. There were Punch and Judy shows at intervals during the day, which kept hordes of children amused for hours. When it came to lunchtime, you could buy a sandwich, fishand-chips and a jug of tea. The advertising said “Jug of tea for the sands”, which always prompted your father to use his yearly joke: “Why do the sands want a jug of tea?” If you were lucky you had an ice-cream cornet in the afternoon. Of course, if you were just on a day-trip, your mother would have packed up enough food
to feed the entire beach! Sometimes, brass bands played in the bandstand on the promenade, with crowds of seated people listening to them. Amusement arcades were starting to spring up, which were essential when the weather was bad, and, of course, the obligatory Gypsy Rose Lee, who, wherever you went, was definitely the only true Romany fortune-teller! When you went to bed at night, happy and very tired, it was complete with liberal applications of calomine lotion for any sunburn you’d managed to acquire. And we all remember, with rose-tinted spectacles. the days of our childhood as being hot and sunny, so that was possibly true. As it was before the days of sun-creams, my mother made her own, using olive oil and vinegar. She smelled dreadful - but it certainly kept the flies away!
Accion del Sol news
Mass heartworm disgrace LOCAL police responded to growing concerns over the welfare of dogs in Guia de Isora last week when they discovered an extreme case of animal hoarding.
The first eight animals were taken from a finca straight to Accion del Sol for immediate medical attention, and another 20 following suit. They were owned by a British couple, who consigned the poor animals to live in appalling conditions with no food, water or shade; some with injuries and full of ticks and fleas. And, sadly, every dog tested positive for heartworm, brought on by parasites. It is a serious, potentially danger-
ous disease if not treated correctly. Help home inmates We are reaching crisis point at the refuge with our highest number of abandoned dogs yet. And with an ongoing dust problem from the nearby Granadilla Port construction works, we
are struggling to cope. Please visit the refuge if you have any spare time and would like to help us, maybe by walking one or two of the dogs. We are open throughout the summer, so please drop in. There is always a dog waiting for some TLC.
Or you can contact us on 922 778 630, from 8am-5pm, if you are interested in adopting one of our many dogs, old and young. No adoption fee is charged, but donations are welcomed towards the escalating costs of the refuge. Also, we are always in need of blankets, towels, dog leads, collars and puppy milk, if you have any to spare. Opening hours We are open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 2-5pm, and on Saturdays from 1-4pm. The refuge is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and on Public Holidays. Where to find us The refuge is situated at Granadilla’s Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER, the ecological park which houses the windmills.

Katie responded so well to the change of environment, and the superb care given by Jim and Sara Chew, from Horse Riding Adventures in Aldea Blanca, where Katie went to live. None of us could have foreseen that her problem would return so badly, though. And after trying everything possible, we had to make the heart-wrenching decision to put her to sleep this week. The constant pain broke her spirit in the end, and we truly believe she’d had enough. But we will always remember our spirited girl, and we really did our best to give her some extra time here
on earth. RIP Katie, 3/03/01-10/08/15 Dog of the week Pillo was found by us as a six-month-old pup, knocked down and dying in the road. But our vet, Cesar, saved his life and today, 18 months on, he is still looking for a loving home. He is now two and looks so cuddly, so can you give him a chance of happiness? If so call Sue on 629 388 102. We always suggest a trial period to see how everyone gets on, before a final adoption is done, so you needn’t feel under pressure. We have a selection of rescue dogs needing homes, and if you would consider adopting one, we will give you a friend for life.

By Val Sainsbury YOUNG people who take omega-3 supplements have a lower risk of developing schizophrenia later in life. And those at risk are four times less likely to suffer in the next seven years after taking the supplements for just three months.
A study by scientists at the University of Melbourne suggests that teenagers - and those in their early twenties who take fish oils, can reduce their risk of psychiatric disorders dramatically. Scientists said no other intervention, including psychiatric drugs, has achieved as much for so long after treatment stopped. They also note that anti-psychotic drugs tend to have serious side-effects, including weight gain and sexual dysfunction. In contrast, omega-3 By Carl Pattison
I KNOW we are suffering a heatwave, but fashion doesn’t stop because of the weather. Yes it’s August and the shops are full of their Autumn/Winter collections.
14th August - 20th August 2015
Omega-3 is such a health boost pills have n o serious side - effects. The fatty acid is abundant in salmon, mackerel, sardines and other oily fish. And it has been linked to a host of health benefits, including protection against heart disease and cancer. To arrive at their findings, researchers analysed the effects of omega-3 in young people at high risk of developing schizophrenia. They recruited 41 participants to take the supplements for a 12-week period. The majority of those taking the pills did not show any severe functional impairment, and no longer experienced warning signs for the development of psychosis at follow-up - almost
seven years after the intervention. Typically, schizophrenia manifests in adolescence or early adulthood and the majority of those affected gradually develop a variety of clinically-significant signs and symptoms. Diagnostic criteria, termed “ultra-high risk” criteria, have been developed to identify young people more likely to develop psychosis. Previous studies have implicated a lack of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the development of a number of mental health conditions. And several trials have shown that
supplementation with omega-3 PUFAs can reduce psychotic symptoms. In 2010, Dr Paul Amminger and colleagues reported that a dietary supplementation of omega-3 PUFAs, in participants aged 1325, prevented a first episode of a psychotic disorder for up to a year. Now, in the journal Nature Communications, they report the longer-term efficiency of this intervention after a period of 6.7 years with 71 of the original 81 participants. They found that 9.8% of the omega-3 group (4 out 41) developed psychosis, compared with 40 (16 out of 40) in the placebo group.
In addition, the placebo group showed more rapid onset of psychosis and a higher, overall incidence of other psychiatric disorders. Dr Amminger, from the University of Melbourne, said: “Longchain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are essential for neural development. “As key components of brain tissue, omega-3 PUFAs play critical roles in brain development and function, and a lack of these fatty acids has been implicated in a number of mentalhealth conditions over the lifespan. “In this study, we showed that brief intervention with omega-3 PUFAs reduced both the risk of progression to psychotic disorder and psychiatric morbidity in general. “The majority of individuals from the omega-3 group did not show severe functional impairment, and no longer experienced attenuated psychotic symptoms in the follow-up.”
The doctor said schizophrenia was a devastating condition, characterised by delusions, hallucinations and cognitive problems that, typically, manifests in adolescence or early adulthood. The onset may be abrupt or insidious, but the majority of individuals experience the slow and gradual development of a variety of clinically-significant signs and symptoms. Schizophrenia does not just affect mental health. Patients die more than a decade earlier than the general population, mainly because of heart and metabolic conditions. Although early treatment has been linked to better outcomes, current treatments for schizophrenia provide control rather than cure. Dr Amminger added: “This is the first study to show, to the best of our knowledge, that a 12-week intervention with omega-3 PUFAs prevented transition to full-threshold, psychotic disorder.”
WE FADE TO GREY
One thing I note is that there seems to be one colour jumping out from those glamour rails - and that’s good old GREY. Normally, we see black as the main colour contender in win-
ter, but this takes a back seat to anything grey, from your palest to your deepest - and is anything silvery in between. This colour is a classic, so whatever you buy, you’ll be able to wear it in years to come. Team up your greys with ever-faithful black, or add a slash of colour. Pink is hot with grey, as is red. Stick to brights to zap up your look, and don’t forget to accessorise with, of course, silver jewels. If you do go for this look, make sure your greys are not too heavy. We seem to have quite a few stores that know we aren’t going to wear cashmere or wool here in Tenerife. Quilting and slightly military seem to crop up here and there in
the shops. Keep it simple and classy if you want your pieces to last. Armani, Gucci and Zara have all gone for the trend this win-
ter, and you will find it hard to buy black because nearly all the stores have gone with this timeless grey colour. Accessories have followed suit, too, with barely a gold item in sight. Shiny chrome and silver, mixed with bling and dull metals, come to the front when picking out those items to finish off your outfit. And don’t forget, it looks a lot better if you’re going for grey that your shoes are a totally different tone or even colour to your outfit. Don’t match-up your greys completely because you could look washed out. The theme is classic and the look oozes style. So pick carefully and you, too, could pull off the winter season’s hottest colour.

Peddling the padel game...
EVEN if you’ve never actually played it yourself, you’ve almost certainly seen a game of padel (or padel tennis) if you have spent more than a week in Tenerife.
Of course, you might not have realised what you were actually watching. Many people from overseas don’t really understand what the sport is because it looks like tennis, with a few rules thrown in from squash, and a much smaller racquet. And that’s basically it! Padel tennis is a popular sport, deeply rooted within the Canarian community; partly, because it is easy to learn
and play, and, probably even more importantly, for the vibrant social scene off-court. Think of it as the Canarian equivalent of the French après-ski - just warmer and cheaper. The popular game was invented in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1969 and is played throughout Spain and most of
Latin America. A UK Padel Federation was set up in 2011 as the result of a huge increase in the sport’s popularity among Brits - many of whom discovered the sport while on holiday in Spain. Padel tennis is a racquet sport played within an enclosed court. It is normally played in pairs
- the same or mixed-sex - and the rules are similar to traditional tennis, except that balls are allowed to bounce off the glass walls. All serves are underhand, the net is lower than in tennis and the racquet is solid, with no strings, but usually perforated. The point-scoring method is exactly
the same as in tennis. That it’s so easy to learn means players of all ages can enjoy the game from the start. This has made it extremely popular at an amateur level, resulting in a huge number of followers who play for the sole enjoyment of the game. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get fit from playing it. Padel is a predominantly aerobic, medium-to low-impact exercise, which means it’s an excellent fatburner. A typical game, lasting 90 minutes, can burn in the region of 600-700 calories, depending on how much you run around, although you can easily negate that with a couple of beers and some crisps at the bar afterwards! The fact that it’s so accessible and so easy
to get started doesn’t mean it’s not a “real” sport, though. Far from it! Professional padel players train intensely to reach the top of their game, and the World Padel Tour (WPT), which started in Spain, has now travelled to Portugal, Argentina and even Dubai. Over the past 10 years, the popularity of this sport has exploded and there is a growing number of professional players, both male and female. If you’ve never tried padel but would like to, we offer free 30-minute taster classes at Activate Padel. With four courts, expert teachers and all the equipment you need to get started, come and give it a go! For more information call 822 070 037.

Coming along nicely
By Roscoe THE trophy looks cheap and the opponents are all over the place … but a two-legged win over a La Liga side is still something to cherish. Especially against the fierce enemy from Gran Canaria.
Tenerife fans are as fickle as any, and they have not been the happiest of bunnies this summer. As I wrote last week, transfer activity has been quiet with only three new signings. But there comes a stage when you have to trust those in charge. The kids seem to have blended into the main squad, and pre-season matches have been very encouraging. Tenerife have drawn with La Liga’s Eibar and Sporting Gijon before dispatching Las Palmas twice in a week. The 1-0 win at the Heliodoro was pleasing and the victory by the same score in Gran Canaria was the icing on the cake. A cynic might feel it says more about the
men in the custard shirts than Tenerife. But while it’s true that Las Palmas have big problems, take nothing away from Tenerife. You can already see what manager Raul Agne is planning. The defence is set, and it’s clear that Abel is in for a big campaign in central midfield. New striker Pedro Martin has hit the ground running with a couple of goals, and I thought his work rate was excellent on Wednesday. We are close to getting that elusive left-back,
and all is good in the hood, says Raul Agne. “We are deserved win-
ners and it was another pleasing win. It was the first away match against
arch-rivals and was a litmus test. “I think the guys
did very well and we were better. We have controlled the game throughout the match and I thought we were dangerous on the counter-attack.” Agne was also pleased with a couple of the youngsters. “Christo González was excellent,” he said. “ He is only 17 and he handled the brutal conditions. He brings quality to the team and you forget his age.” New centre-back German Sanchez has impressed in pre-season. It’s his first season in the second tier of Spanish football and he is pleased with his progress. “There are big differences between being here and in Segunda B,” he said. “You see it in training and in the matches, where everything is quicker and more intense. “Tactically and physically, I am ready to go, and the team are looking good. We have been working on a few technical pieces as well, especially set-pieces and corners. “I always like to go up for them as I can score a few goals. So we have been working on that.” German was a surprise signing, but he already has the fans onside. He could prove to be a real find.
‘Dynamite’ fight night! S A N D R O Dominguez, the young Adeje professional known in boxing circles as ‘Dinamita’ or Dynamite, fights for his first Spanish professional title tomorrow (Saturday) at super-featherweight.
Victory would make him Adeje’s first boxing champion in this category, according to local Sport’s Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera. Adeje Council has backed Sandro for years, and the popular fighter is also a boxing
trainer, involved in the borough’s sporting programme and attracting many young boys and girls to the ring. At 24, he has been boxing with the Boxrec group for a number of
years, and, since turning professional, has won six of his seven bouts, three of them inside the distance. Tomorrow’s fight, against Madrid’s Antonio Chiky Rodriguez
over 10 rounds, is the headline bout in a series of duels, and could see him lift his first national belt. It would be such a popular win, and, through the local press,
Sandro thanked his training team for getting him this far, as well as his parents. “My dad plays a special part in my training,” he said: “He goes with me up to Teide to train three times a week.” He outlined his regular schedule of running, weights and specialised circuits every day with his training team. And Sandro also mentioned the British Walsh brothers Liam, Ryan and Michael, who are currently training here with the local lad at the Olympic sports stadium in Las Americas. Liam is current British and Commonwealth title-holder, also in the
super-featherweight division. If Sandro is successful tomorrow, he will obviously be looking towards an international title fight at some stage. But first thing on Sunday, he will make his “annual pilgrimage” to the Virgen de Candelaria. “It’s something I do every year, normally on the feast day,” he said. “But as I am boxing on that day, I will go on Sunday.” Hopefully, to thank the Island’s patron for a national title. Tickets for tomorrow’s show can be bought on the door, or in participating shops. Good luck Sandro. Adeje and the rest of South Tenerife are with you!

Boothen Army steal a march! FOR the second week running, Boothen Army were involved in a big match in the race for honours at the summit of Division 1, and they have come through both tests with flying colours.
Facing an unbeaten Phoenix Bar side, they would have expected a stern test. But despite some high check-outs from the visitors and a 180 from Bubbles, they ran out 6-2 victors. But missed doubles cost the Phoenix dearly, although credit is due to Boothen for an excellent display. So, it’s level-pegging at the top with Bar 180 A on the same 68-point
mark after putting five past a plucky Exiles outfit, while Waterfall went one better and took six points from Bar 180 B. Mirroring the competitive edge in last week’s Division 2 matches, all the other four ties finished in stalemate. John hit his third maximum for Boothen Titans as they drew at Hoppys Bar, while Pas O Nadas took the trebles leg to tie with Palms Pool bar and end a run of nine straight defeats. A last-leg hold by Gaffers squared a tight affair at Emerald Shamrocks, and Fluffs Playboys put down the Jager long enough to share the points with Emerald Lounge. Sandys Chippers took their turn to sit it out last Friday, leaving the door open for

for us darters tonight (Friday), as we head into the trebles knockout, which can be a bit of a lottery. And, with close to 70 players involved, you’d do well to pick any favourites. So expect a few upsets on the way! Good luck to everyone.
Burnett Bench Boost bites! THE return of the Barclay’s Premier League also sees the return of the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League. And this year it is bigger than ever, with 93 teams entered.
Some managers take it more seriously than others, and this year there are a couple of rule changes, which allow you to pick up extra points. But use them wisely!
The point-scoring team of the week were a mixed bag, with players from eight sides making the grade. Manchester City, Leicester and Crystal Palace led the way with two apiece, while the rest of the team comprised
players from West Ham, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Swansea and Everton. Yaya Touré was the performer of the week with a 16-point tally. The Oasis Fm Team of the week and, as it is also Game Week 1, current league leaders are Carls Elite XI, managed by Carl Burnett. They came in with 63 points. Yohan Cabaye contributed 10 points and his three defenders also had a good week with six points each. However, he chose to play his Bench Boost, which is one of the new
features, meaning all players on his bench also count towards his weekly total, and this was boosted by West Ham keeper Adrián scoring 11 points. It was interesting to see that in among the top-10 are some of last season’s familiar names: Frank Devaney, Jamie Palmer and Gordon Wilson. The question is, can they stay there for the full season? But there is little to choose between everyone after such a low-scoring week, and there will be a lot of
changes over the next few matches. It is still not too late to join up. All you have to do is go to premierleague.com and click
on the fantasy league icon. Register a team and then, to enter our league, use the code 313966-83519 Good luck!

Gaffers are riding high WHAT a difference a week makes in the Direct Telecom Pool League. After last week’s results, Palms A were sitting on top of the pile and feeling quite smug about it.
But this week they came crashing back to earth. They were away against last year’s champions Gaffers A and, after taking the first frame, were quietly confident of an upset. However, after fluffing their lines in the next two frames, it turned out to be the only game they would win all night as Neil and his team inflicted a heavy defeat. This sent Gaffers A to the top of league - and they are going to be difficult to be move! Promoted Bluebell A could well be this year’s dark horses. On Tuesday night, they picked up their second win of the season against a strong Rewind A team. Bluebell raced into a five-frame lead, assisted by the Rewind boys, who were struggling on the black. Daryll pulled one back, only to see Ian and then Alan take the next two to secure the points early for the home side. Rewind A won a couple of the dead rubbers to make the score more respectable, but Bluebell’ early damage proved telling. Dreamers A were also in fine form against Hammers C, who had sneaked in Jambo and James as a wild cards. Grass not greener on the other side, eh boys? But the wild cards didn’t affect Dreamers, who took the first eight frames and the
points in style. Fortunately for the Hammers, Bobby and Tony picked up a couple of late frames to avoid the whitewash, but Dreamers are another team to watch. Exiles A have their first points on the board this season after a home game against Terrace Bantams. They made a slow start, though, allowing the visitors to take a 3-1 lead. But with Stash winning his game and then going straight back on with a second success, the game swung in their favour. Bantams were rattled and the game was soon 4-4, and when Exiles won the next two to guarantee a point, Bantams had no response, the stuffing having been knocked out of them, and Exiles took the 11th frame to win. Terrace Roosters didn’t fare much better in their home game against Gaffers B. Early frames were traded, but newly-promoted Gaffers can be a handful and, despite some good pool played by the home team, they just couldn’t get their noses (or beaks) in
front. Gaffers B eventually took their first points in the top flight, and they were good for them! Treehouse A are one of the teams looking to mount a serious challenge to the top two this season, and an early away trip to last season’s runners-up, Hammers A, would prove a good yardstick to how the team has progressed. The home side started strongly with Paul, Penguin and Wez taking the first three frames. Mark then beat Barry to get Treehouse a frame on the board. The next four games levelled up the score with Mark, Jay and Paul recording wins and only Scott losing. So, at 4-4 it was gameon. Hammers have experience, though, and, having taken the next two frames, looked good for the win. But Scott and Paul had other ideas and took the final two to earn the draw. In the final Division One clash, Palms Elite hosted Phoenix Potters and it was a similar match to the one above. Neither team
wanted to give anything away and it was a cagey affair that looked like turning into a Test match, being played over five days! Frames were traded, but in the end they couldn’t be separated and the spoils were shared. In Division Two, Treehouse B spent most of last season at the wrong end of the table, but this season they are off to a flyer and currently occupy top spot. This week they faced familiar opponents Dreamers B, but both teams are much improved and this looked like being a closely-fought game. The home team had other ideas, though, and played some solid pool, Dreamers put up a good fight and went close in many of the games, but on the night they just didn’t have enough and Treehouse took the points. Bluebell B are right there with them, in second spot, though, because they have a slightly lower frame difference. They travelled to Splash Bar and fought out a much closer game. Frames were being swopped as both teams looked for a breakthrough and, when it eventually came, it went the visitors’ way, with Bluebell picking up the three points. Splash have now lost twice by the same scoreline, but they have quality in their side and results will improve. The other Division Two match was a real family affair. hosted Sabores, captained by Lorraine, his wife. At the start of the contest, as you can see, the sides posed for a picture before the gloves came off! TPT, with new bandit signing Adi, got off to a flying start and never looked back. This was always going to be about bragging rights, and Nick wanted a whitewash. But fortunately for Lorraine, her team picked up one frame …

and that was as good as it got. Nick and Lorraine also faced each at the table, purely coincidence I’m sure as the players for each game are picked and placed in order without the other captain’s knowledge. The winner had to do the household chores for month and Nick managed the win. But I’m sure he doesn’t know where the washing machine is anyway!

It’s tougher by the week!
THAT was some opening weekend in the Premier League! In the last couple of seasons, it has become even harder to predict results - and it looks like being even harder this season. Not the greatest of starts for Chelsea or Arsenal, but hats off to Swansea and West Ham.
Aston Villa v Man Utd Villa will have been pleased with an opening-day win. It wasn’t the prettiest, but you don’t want to lose your opening game. Micah Richards looked good in defence, and they attacked with pace. There were signs that they might just do all right this season. United were slow and lethargic and, had they come up against better opposition, the result might have been different. Defence looked okay, but Rooney didn’t inspire the attack. There will be a few more players come in before the window closes. Last season: 1-1 Prediction: Away win
Sunderland v Norwich The Black Cats started this season as they ended last, with some absolutely woeful defending, and their fans must have wondered what was going on. Advocaat has a huge task on his hands turning that result around, but this weekend’s opponents will give them the opportunity to do just that. Norwich had high hopes, especially given the number of players they have bought in. But they were caught out at the back and, unless they address that - and quickly - their season could be over before it begins. Come on Delia, let’s be havin’ ya! Last season: N/A Prediction: Draw
Spurs v Stoke It could be a long season for Spurs fans if the club do not add to their squad. They looked devoid of ideas against United and, though they lost by just one goal, it could have been embarrassing against a better team. They are being linked with players, but none is an inspiring name, or a proven big-game player. Stoke have bought in a lot of attacking players and, against Liverpool, they showed some good moves. It was the first game of the season, though and, neither team played at their best. It took a world-class goal to separate them, but they will fare better in this fixture and should pick up their first points. Last season: 1-2 Prediction: Away win
West Ham v Leicester I don’t think many people predicted a win for West Ham at Arsenal last week, but on the day they were hungrier - and the best team. It was a great way to start the season and one they will be looking to continue coming into this fixture. They looked compact and defended well, breaking on the counterattack with pace. Leicester also recorded a win, albeit against weaker opponents, but you can only beat what is put in front of you. Ranieri has pretty much retained the same back-room staff and formation, and that could be the key this season. Last season: 2-0 Prediction: Home win
Watford v West Brom Watford will be happy to have got their first game under their belts, and to come away from Goodison Park with a point. They need to keep the momentum going because in this league, it is important to beat the clubs who will be around you. So a win here is what will be expected of them. West Brom had a difficult opening fixture and were poor in the first 30 minutes. They settled down in the second half and were better, but they will need to beat teams like Watford. Can record signing Salomón Rondón score the goals they are lacking? Last season: N/A Prediction: Away win
Swansea v Newcastle When the fixtures come out, you don’t want to face last season’s Champions immediately, but the Swans went to Stamford Bridge, played without fear and were rewarded with a point. It was a great start and now they must build on it, the team played well together, but there is always room for improvement. Newcastle put in a good performance against Southampton, which left the fans hoping for a better season than the last. The new signings looked good and Wijnaldum opened his account early, which will fill him with confidence. Last season: 2-2 Prediction: Draw
Crystal Palace v Arsenal Palace look to have built a squad to challenge for a top-half-of-the-table finish, and they picked up three points last weekend without even breaking sweat. Yohan Cabaye pulled the strings, got himself on the scoresheet and, if he stays fit, they will have a good campaign. Not quite sure where Yannick Bolasie will fit in, though, which is a shame as he was great last season. Same old Arsenal was the cry from the fans, and you can’t disagree with them. Petr Cech was supposed to be the final piece to the jigsaw, but he had a debut to forget, and they desperately need a striker to help out Giroud. Come on Wenger, get the cheque-book out. Last season: 1-2 Prediction: Draw
Man City v Chelsea City laid down an early marker for the season after a good, solid performance against West Brom. Yaya Toure looked back to his controlling best, scoring two goals in the process, and David Silva was a real handful again. If Kevin de Bruyne comes in with a new striker, they will take some beating. One thing you can say about Mourinho is that he is never boring, as he punished the Chelsea medical staff for the draw against Swansea for keeping players off the pitch for too long. He is good at deflecting the spotlight off his team, but if they play like that against City, they will drop more points. Last season: 1-1 Prediction: Home win
Liverpool v Bournemouth Liverpool managed to get the Stoke monkey off their backs with a win last weekend, but they looked nervous. Given their 6-1 defeat there last time, though, who could blame them? Clyne looked comfortable at right-back, and Joe Gomez looks a great prospect at such a young age. It wasn’t a top allround performance, but it is still early in the season and they will improve. Bournemouth now realise you need to take your chances in this league. They outplayed Villa in the first half but didn’t get the goal they needed. And in the second half they tired and conceded. Fitness will come, but you have to worry for them. Last season: N/A Prediction: Home win
Southampton v Everton
The Saints will have been disappointed not to win last weekend, but they showed good character in coming from behind. They looked a compact team, but with a few new faces, and they just need to gel a little more. It was nice to see Jay Rodriguez playing again. Everton were lucky to take a point against Watford and, for large periods of the game, looked poor. It looks as though John Stones might go to Chelsea, and that will be a huge blow to them because they look about 5-6 players short, especially as Gareth Barry ended up at left-back. Last season: 3-0 Prediction: Home win
