The pressure mounts on Spain Continued from front But Spain is still a country with some outdated traditions, and a worrying, new, ironfist philosophy to civil rights and freedom of speech. Two stories continue to bring shame on the country, and the international community is exerting pressure on Spain to change its ways. People do not want to be told how to live their life in their own country, and it is this philosophy which has started many wars. For example, Britons will not stand for Sharia Law being practised on the streets of, say, Bradford. However, when a growing number of Spaniards are so vocally against the new “Gagging law” and Bull-based activities, it’s clear that something has to be done. The so-called “Gagging Law” sparked more controversy this week when a Spanish woman was fined 800 euros for posting a photograph of a police car parked illegally in a disabled bay. The unnamed Alicante woman posted the photo on her Facebook page saying: “Park where you bloody well please and you won’t even be fined.” But the police tracked her down within 48 hours and fined her. The Citizens Security Law, which came into force on 1st July, bans “the unauthorised use of images of police officers that might jeopardise their or their family’s safety, or that of protected facilities or police operations”. Amnesty International condemned the law, saying that photographing police was vital in cases when excessive force had been used. Fines under this section of the law range from 600-30,000 euros. Fernando Portillo, a spokesman for the local police, said the of-

ficers had parked in the disabled bay because they had been called to deal with an incident of vandalism in a nearby park. A rapid response is essential if they are to catch the offenders “in flagrante”, he told local media, adding that the police park where they can in an emergency. Asked how the photo had put the police at risk, he said the officers felt the woman had impugned their honour by posting the picture and referring the incident to the town hall authorities. “We would have preferred a different solution, but they have the legal right to impose the fine,” said Portillo. Two couples in Córdoba last month were reportedly fined 300 euros each for consuming alcohol in a public place, although they claimed to have had soft drinks and a pizza only. The gagging law also prohibits demonstrations in the vicinity of Parliament or the Senate, trying to prevent an eviction, or actions of passive resistance such as sit-down protests in the street, for which offenders face fines of up to 600,000 euros. Many countries

around the world have condemned the law, and even a Russian news website slammed the law. That tells a story itself! There may be some leeway soon. Home Affairs commissioner Ricardo Sixto said this week: “We hope that in the early months of next year, this law can be repealed. This law gives a wide scope for authorities to impose fines and penalties with little justification.” Meanwhile, the bullrunning season continues to see the death

count rise. Seven people have been gored to death during Spanish festivals since the beginning of July - four of them over the past week. Among them was a 36-year-old town councillor, who was gored in Penafiel, a town north of Madrid, near Valladolid. And further north, an 18-year-old boy who was caught in the stomach by a horn, died in Lerin, Navarra. The other deaths occurred during bull festivals in the regions of Valencia, Murcia, To-

ledo, Castellon and Alicante. Last year, more than 7,200 bulls and steers (castrated bull calves) were killed by bullfighters across Spain. Nearly 2,000 bullfights - or “corridas” - are still held in the country every year. Bullfighting has been banned for a long time in the Canary Islands and in 2010, Catalonia became the second Spanish region to ban the tradition. And the pressure is growing for a total ban. Less than a fortnight ago, matador Fran-

cisco Rivera Ordonez, known as “Paquirri”, was seriously injured by a bull in the northeastern town of Huesca, in Aragon. Bullfighting is barbaric, but it still has many fans in Spain, including Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. A 2013 Spanish law defends bullfighting as part of the nation’s cultural heritage, saying it is the state’s duty “to preserve it”. Maybe there is another reason why it remains a “protected” pastime. It has been revealed that the National Association of Bullfighting Organisers presented the Spanish Government with 45m euros in value added tax (VAT) on last year’s ticket sales, as opposed to cinema returns of 27.7m. Money talks! This week in Malaga, a woman jumped into a ring to comfort a bull just before it was slaughtered. Virginia Ruiz, an animal-rights activist, leapt into the ring carrying a protest poster above her head. She comforted the bull as it lay in distress before she was hauled away. And comedian Ricky Gervais has spoken of his disbelief at the bull runs. He Tweeted: “Neither I nor any bull wants you to fight it. But if you insist I hope it defends itself. F**k anyone who tortures an animal for fun.” Following on with a short video message, he said: “People will go and see it and say, ‘Well, it’s traditional.’ So was slavery. We’ve moved on, haven’t we? I mean surely progress, at its core, is society maximising compassion and minimising suffering?” Quite.

Bank chief’s nod for Rajoy outlook

Golden Mile’s all big smiles! PHASE one of the Golden Mile improvements in Las Americas has finished. The project began in March and all three phases are scheduled to be completed by the beginning of December. The first phase was the biggest task and

the results are impressive. While there is no on-road parking, there are still plenty of spaces in the underground car parks. Businesses have reported a sharp decline in trade during the improvements carried out on the road and pavement.

Hello Ditte!

LORO Parque is celebrating the birth of a Californian sea lion named Ditte, which weighed at about seven kilos at birth and is under the care and feeding of his mother, who gives him full attention in and out of the water. His birth, which takes the number of this Loro Parque species to 13, occurred naturally and

in an area designed specially to ensure the safety and tranquillity of mother and son. At first, he fed off breast milk only, which adds nutrients and fat to waterproof his coat. After six months, the keepers will begin to combine it with fish. Then, at one year, he will be completely emancipated from his mother.

Arona’s beachsafety plan ARONA has started the bidding process to run the contract to keep Las Vistas beach safe. The operation is worth 77,917 euros and the contract will be signed off in two months. New Mayor José Julián Mena said the new contract will “ensure the safety of beach-users and guarantees the security of the bathing area”. Bidding will be conducted through an open process and the final cost of 72,820 euros, plus IGIC of 5,097, represents a saving of almost 4,000 euros against the last budget. José Julián Mena said the current lifeguard house was insufficient, poor, old and very run

down. He added: “This will change. The most important thing is that swimmers are safe and secure on the whole beach.” The upgraded facilities, together with the lifeguards, means the beach will finally conform to the provisions of the Article 115.d) of Law 22/1988. This means there will be marked areas for swimmers, such as access channels, and a separate area for other water activities. Works and Environment Councilman, José Luis Gómez, stressed that “The coastal tourist towns have a special responsibility to ensure the safety of bathing areas.”

THE Spanish Government’s economic policies have been rubberstamped by Bank of Spain governor Luis Maria Linde.

And the influential Bank chief has issued a warning about the risks of changing course as the country gears up for a general election before the end of the year. Mr Linde, also a member of the ECB Governing Council, told the Spanish parliament on Tuesday that changes to labour-market rules, introduced by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, have boosted the pace of job creation. In addition, he was adamant that maintaining the Government’s fiscal policies was crucial for economic growth. “Doubts over whether the efforts in macroeconomic, fiscal and financial rebalancing will continue could put an end to, or reverse, the progress made,” he told

ministers. He said the economy could grow more than 3% this year and next, with the right policy mix. Mr Rajoy, who nominated Mr Linde to head the central bank in 2012, is fighting to rebuild his support before the election. State pollster CIS put support for Mr Rajoy’s People’s Party at 28% last month. But while the party extended its lead over the Socialists, Mr Rajoy is down from the 45% he won in 2011. The Government has

been hurt by the austerity measures Mr Rajoy was forced to implement, in return for a EU bailout of the country’s banking system, as well as a raft of corruption allegations against the PM and his party. Mr Linde was criticised by opposition lawmakers and a Bank of Spain board member after defending Mr Rajoy’s budget policy in April, calling it “common sense” and “patriotism” rather than austerity. While conceding that

the term patriotism may have been inappropriate, Mr Linde described the reaction to his remarks as “a bit exaggerated”. Alberto Garzon, leader of the United Left party, said: “For years, the Bank of Spain has systematically supported the economic policies of the Government. Given the economic situation in Spain, you’d think there’d be some room for criticism, but No. “Whether it’s today, or the comments on patriotism, it’s the government’s narrative.”

Spain and the Rock still at loggerheads GIBRALTAR authorities have refuted claims by Spain that its waters are a safe haven for drugsmugglers.

Angry officials have have hit back after Spanish security forces violated the territory’s waters while chasing suspected traffickers last week. It followed an incident reported last week, when Spanish security forces were said to have “violated” the territory’s waters in pursuit of suspected traffickers. Two men were arrested by the chasing customs’ police, while another person escaped as a Spanish police helicopter circled overhead in the early hours of the Sunday morning.

A Gibraltar Government spokesman said: “There is constant cooperation between Gibraltar’s patrols and the Spanish customs and Civil Guard. “But you can’t have Spanish boats acting as if they have jurisdiction in Gibraltarian waters because they don’t.” He added: “If they enter in hot pursuit without contacting our security services, our priority at that point is to stop Spain from violating our territorial integrity.” The Spanish Government reacted to the episode by saying: “There was no incident because Spain recognises those waters as Spanish.” The Mayor of the neighbouring port city of Algeciras, who is also an MP for Spain’s ruling Popular Party, went further, stressing that Gi-

braltar provided “shelter” to drug-traffickers in its territory. José Ignacio Landaluce accused Fabian Picardo, Gibraltar’s chief minister, of deliberately “increasing the enmity between the UK and the Kingdom of Spain” after the Rock’s Government had launched a strongly-worded protest about Spanish “bravado” and “failure to co-operate with local law enforcement”. But Mayor Landaluce countered: “It is one thing to warn, in the interests of co-operation, and quite another having to ask permission to enter your own home.” Gibraltar’s authorities point to a record of willingness to co-operate with the Spanish security forces, saying that this year alone, a total of 2.5 tonnes of cannabis resin has been seized

from traffickers entering the territory after crossing from North Africa. “Some 99% of the smugglers are Spanish,” said the Government spokesman, adding that Gibraltar had tough laws on drug-smuggling - and a relatively low rate of drug-related problems. “And we want to keep it that way!” But the UK Government remains on the diplomatic offensive over “the completely unacceptable” incursion. David Lidington, Minister for Europe, sent a letter to his Spanish counterpart, reiterating London’s indignation over the violation of British Gibraltar Territorial Waters. But it also called for “increased cooperation” from Spain with the Rock in the fight against crime.

Steer clear of these killer rip-currents Horrific total of drownings

THE number of people who have died by drowning in Spanish waters so far this year stands at 235, including 29 in the Canaries. And much of that bulky figure was down to a dramatic July, which saw the loss of 85 lives - more than 40% of the total. These shocking figures were presented by the Royal Spanish Federation of Lifesavers, whose co-ordinator for Prevention and Safety, Ana Dominguez Pachón, said: “These figures show that we need to do more to save lives.” July is the most tragic month since the beginning of the year, although the period coincides with a greater influx of people in beaches, rivers and aquatic facilities. In the first 15 days of August, 30 people drowned. while eight deaths were recorded in February. There were 14 deaths in January 20 in March, 16 in April, 23 in May 23 and 29 in June. By gender, the number of drowned men was more than triple the total of women: 186 against 49, and 71% of those who died were Spanish (167), followed by other European citizens (15%, with 37 victims).

Andalucia and Cataluña, with 38 and 34 people in each community, led the number of drownings in all of Spain, followed by the Canary Islands with 29, Galicia with 28 and Valencia with 25. More than half the drownings have occurred on beaches (135 deaths, representing 58%), while 40 people have died in pools (17%) and another 22 in rivers (9%). In other water areas, 38 people have perished. Most of these deaths, 68%, occurred in areas where there was no monitoring services or lifeguards at the time of the incident, while in 29% of cases, these service were provided and 3% was unknown! The time slot in which more people have been drowned - 20% of cases - was between noon and 2pm, followed by the 2-4pm slot and then between 6-8pm. By age, according to data collected so far, the people most affected were those over 45, who accounted for almost 60% of drownings. Specifically, 38 people drowned between the age of 65-74 years; 35 people over 75; 34 people between 55-64, and 30 people between 4554.

tragedy of boy, 4 A BRITISH boy aged just four was found drowned in a swimming pool at the Spanish holiday villa his family were renting. The youngster is understood to have fallen into the pool while playing with other children, while his parents entertained friends. The teenage son of one of the friends sounded the alert after discovering the boy floating in the water. One of the

parents tried to revive him, before paramedics took over. The tragedy happened on Sunday evening at the detached villa, in a residential street near La Carla de Mijas, on the coast between Marbella and Fuengirola. The culde-sac overlooks a golf course, which is popular with British expats and tourists. An investigating judge has taken charge of a routine investigation.

A 56-YEAR-OLD man, playing with a young girl in the sea at Cullera, in Valencia, suffered a heart attack during a rescue attempt from the fierce current by lifeguards. The accident, which took place on 3rd August, was one of many reported since the start of the summer holidays season. Of the 235 drownings this year, 85 of them were in July alone, according to a report by the Royal Spanish Federation of Rescue and Lifesaving (RFESS). Tragically. a further 30 deaths occurred in the first two weeks of August because of the rip currents, which are so powerful that they act like rivers, pulling swimmers out to sea. “We don’t want to criminalise anybody, but there are people who take no notice of the flags,” says a source at Cullera Town Hall. “We have to call on bathers to be responsible.” Antonio de la Cruz, a geologist who helped prepare a report by the Camilo José Cela University, blames powerful rip currents, saying: “These are not the typical currents found between the waves.” These currents are produced by gusts of wind that whip up the waves. The problem, particularly on the fabulous, sun-seeker beaches in Valencia, is that a huge amount of water reaches the shoreline. But the lack of depth means there isn’t enough space, and it is pushed out to sea powerfully. The Las Salinas beach in Asturias, on Spain’s Cantabrian coast, is well known for its rip currents. On 28th July, five friends had to be rescued when strong waves prevented them from leaving the water. Four were saved, but a 30-year-old woman later died. Cullera’s Environment Department warns that recent storms have strengthened rip currents off its beaches, but bathers are still unaware of the danger. Five

deaths occurred in the first three days of August in Valencia. Spain’s Health Ministry has issued a series of recommendations to swimmers to avoid accidents at the beach, river, or in the swimming pool. *Choose safe places to bathe that are supervised by lifeguards *Keep an eye on children at all times when they are in the water or near it *Do not let them swim unaccompanied *If you do not know how to swim, or are not a strong swimmer, use a life vest in the water *Always follow the warnings indicated by the three-flag system (green, yellow, red) *Drinking alcohol before bathing reduces one’s ability to react to danger, and could lead to unsafe behaviour *Swimming at night is very dangerous. *Leave the water as

quickly as possible if you begin to feel tired or cold *Test the temperature before entering the water *Wait two hours after eating before taking a swim The RFESS’ report shows that 68% of deaths happen in areas where there are no lifeguards. Carlos Urquía, a doctor with the Spanish Red Cross’s health and rescue department, highlights the danger of swimming on beaches without lifeguards, asking: “If something happens, who is going to help us?” The Red Cross has no figures suggesting an increase in the number of drownings, precisely because its lifeguards have been able to intervene to prevent fatalities. More often than not, they are required to assist holiday-makers, who have suffered a heart at-

tack or are suffering from sunstroke. The majority of victims in July were men over 45. “Older people are more likely to suffer from illnesses related to cholesterol, obesity or tobacco,” says Urquía. The RFESS also warns that 9.8% of drownings over the last 7½ months have involved under-10s, the vast majority occurring in swimming pools where a lifeguard was not present. Last week, an eightyear-old non-swimmer drowned after falling into a reservoir in Níjar, Almería province, according to the EFE news agency. “It is essential to teach small children how to swim,” stresses Urquía. Although it has no figures for 2014, the National Statistics Institute reports that 478 people drowned in 2011, 438 in 2012, and 422 in 2013.

Millions pour into Canaries THE eight Canary Island airports recorded a total of 3,026,167 passengers in July, which was a 2.8% increase over the same month last year.

The total number of international passengers was just a shade over 1.8 million - a rise of 2.1%, according to data from AENA, the

Spanish airports’ controllers. Of these 1.8 million foreign passengers, 1.7m were from the European Union and 103,951 from other countries. As for domestic traffic, there was a 4.4% increase against the July 2014 figure. The highest passenger traffic in the archipelago was at Gran Canaria, with 821,842 people (up 8%) followed by Tenerife South with

713,046 (-1.2%) and Lanzarote with 563 543 (3%) - ranked seventh, eighth and ninth respectively in the AENA national network. Fuerteventura welcomed 453 761 fliers (up 5%), while Tenerife North had 363,266 (3%). La Palma 94,160 (2%), also experienced a greater percentage increase. Finally, El Hierro airport had 13,028 visitors (-6.6%) and La Gomera 3,521 (9%).

The number of flights at the Canary Island airports totalled 27,151 in July, of which 10,845 were international and 14,799 national; while freight traffic was 3,278 tons. On the other hand, in the period from January to July, the number of passengers recorded by the Canary Island airports totalled 20.2, visitors, which meant a 1,5% increase over the same 2014 period.

Cabildo’s gearing up to improve Teide services FOLLOWING approval of Teide’s new management by the Canary Islands Government, Tenerife Cabildo will assume total control on 1st January.

Teide is one of the most visited national parks in the country - and even Europe and among the C a -

bildo’s objectives will be an improvement of services offered to different visitors. And for that, there will be a set of charges. Throughout 2016, the Cabildo will charge for services like parking, interpreter tours and guides. Environment Councillor Jose Antonio

Valbuena, head of the department responsible, says only people from outside the Island, will have to pay, so that residents will be exempt from paying for parking, among other services. “Our goal is to make sure the council is managing the park very w e l l ,

and that it is noticed,” said Valbuena. “That means improving the capacity, and quality of the services being provided. “To do this, we must initiate contact with municipalities. We want to manage the economy more efficiently, so that it can receive more services, not only in the park but throughout the environment.”

Spanish trader is held after hideous Isis range found A SPANISH shopkeeper has been arrested by Spanish police for selling T-shirts showing a British aid worker as he was about to be killed by Islamic State militants.

He also had a range of clothing in his shop and online store, with slogans promoting Isis and another Islamist militant group, Harakat Sham al-Islam. The range included T-shirts, with a silkscreened image showing British hostage Alan Henning as he was about to be beheaded by Islamic State last year, together with his killer and the Isis flag. The Spanish trader, whose name was not released, was detained during a police operation in Narón, in north-

west Spain. Pictures released by the Spanish Government showed a range of items the man was marketing, including sweatshirts, T-shirts, bags and baby bodysuits bearing slogans in Arabic of Isis or Harakat Sham al-Islam. The shopkeeper, selling the T-shirts to customers in Spain and Portugal for 14 euros (£10) each, is accused of using social networks to spread Islamist propaganda and to “belittle and humiliate victims of jihadi terrorism”, said the Interior Ministry. This year so far, 47 people accused of having links to Islamist militancy have been arrested in Spain. Europe’s worst, seemingly Islamist attack, occurred in Spain in 2004 when 191 people were killed in bombings of Madrid commuter trains.

Canary bonus in cork AER Lingus is increasing its weekly service from Cork to Tenerife to two flights this winter.

The Irish airline currently operates a Sunday service, which will be extended to Thursdays as well, taking off on 29th October until the end of March 2016. It means an additional 7,000 seats for holiday-

makers in Munster, and an airline spokesperson said: “It’s always an attractive sun destination for Irish people, and is particularly popular for those travelling from that region. “Given the recent weather we’ve been experiencing here at home, it’s not surprising that we’ve seen an increase in bookings to the Canaries, where year-round sunshine is virtually guaranteed.”

What is value? MONEY is a strange concept. You cannot take it with you. It can make you feel elated or depressed. Lack of it can drive you to do crazy things, and too much changes you.

It can make you the most generous or paranoid of people. It’s also not what it seems because, after all, everyone has a different view on the value of money. In his fine column this week, hair stylist Carl makes the wonderful point about the price of shampoo. I will let you read it. But he is right. I’m in the very small camp that thinks footballers are underpaid. Lionel Messi earns 250,000 euros a week. But once he pays tax, national insurance, agent’s fee and manager’s fee he is left with, let’s say, 60,000 euros. Not bad for kicking a ball around. His employer, Barcelona football club, earn hundreds of millions a year based purely on the fact that Messi wears their jersey. It doesn’t seem fair. He

gets just 13 million a year, or around 4%. A pint of beer in London will leave you no change from a fiver. That’s seven euros in our money. I know of some people who moan the house down if they are even charged one euro for a pint of beer over here. God knows how they expect bars to make money. This weekend, I’m in the UK for my great friend’s wedding. The return flight cost a cool 500 euros, which has led most people I’ve mention it to shake their head. It’s a lot of money. Or is it? For that, I’m travelling 2,000 miles and back in comfort. The airline has to pay the fully-trained pilots, crew, support staff, fuel, landing costs, parking fees, insurance, taxes, office fees, advertising and a host of other charges. Oh, and make a profit for shareholders, put money away for, literally, a rainy day - and still find money for investment in new planes in the future. And most people begrudge paying 150 euros for a return ticket.

Fiesta Lustrales time in Adeje... THE traditional Adeje Fiestas Lustrales, revived in recent years, is now celebrated throughout the borough every five years.

Accredited archives cite similar events in 18th Century Adeje, when a statue of the town’s Patron, the Virgin of the Incarnation, was removed from the town church and taken around the smaller parishes and villages and down to her original home in San Sebastian. Yet the first Fiesta Lustral in this cycle took place only in 2005, again in 2010 and now, this year, we celebrate the third Fiestas Lustrales. Statues and images of Saints and the Holy Family play an important part in the religious and cultural heritage of Spanish towns and villages. And Adeje is no different. Here in the South, over time, three images/statues appeared which

have been revered since the Spanish Conquest (1519-21): the Virgin of Candelaria, along the Chimiche coast, the Virgin of Abona, along the Arico coast and the Virgin of the Incarnation, who appeared at the Enramada beach, La Caleta. The statue was first placed in the Humilladero Cave and afterwards in the Hermitage, built beside the sea and placed under her protection. However, given the pirate raids along the coast, Pedro de Ponto brought the statue to the Church of Santa Úrsula in Costa Adeje,

where it has resided ever since. During September, the statue of Our Lady of the Incarnation, who also holds the title of Perpetual and Honorary Mayoress of Adeje, will travel from village to village by road and sea, and be greeted by the faithful in each neighbourhood. Given the multi-cultural nature of Adeje, it is heart-warming to see so many people from different cultures taking part in the celebrations. So if you see a parade passing over in the next month, do stop and enjoy what is both a new and very traditional

part of the Adeje way of life. Here’s a guide to when She will be in each part of the borough: Neighbourhood visits September 6-12th: La Hoya, Tijoco Bajo, La Concepción and Tijoco Alto 13-19th: Armeñime, El Puertito, Playa Paraíso, Callao Salvaje, Marazul, Las Rosas and Los Menores 20-26th: Los Olivos, Las Nieves, el Galeón, Las Moraditas, Taucho, La Quinta, Las Torres, La Postura and La Viña 27th-Oct 2nd: La Caleta, Fañabé, Miraverde, Puerto Colón and Costa Adeje

Islands’ fresh fishing angle OVER-FISHING is a common problem throughout the world, but it seems that progress is being made here.

Canaries fishermen are putting the finishing touches to a draft proposal that aims to correct over-fishing in our waters. The ‘Fishermen Nuestra Señora de los Reyes of El Hierro’ are leading the way with sustainable fishing, and their ideas are being taken up in the waters around other islands. A two-day workshop this week at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) in Santa Cruz was hailed as a major success. Fernando Gutierrez, representing the Herreños fishermen, said: “We are facing a time where

three islands have taken the path towards a truly sustainable fishing project. “In El Hierro, we have been pioneering for nearly two decades, with spectacular results. And recently, Fuerteventura and La Gomera joined us in the removal of long-lines and fish traps.” The Herreños have also taken the step of allowing just 10 fish drums per boat. Similar measures will be implemented with shrimp pots. Gutierrez stressed: “What has been achieved in El Hierro, with the management of scarce resources, is transferable to any island, especially when some have a huge fishing platform. “We want to fish today, tomorrow and in the future. This is the way to do it.”

It’s not so easy for sex offenders now A SPANISH register of convicted sex offenders will be set up following a new law, approved in July, which insists that anyone working with children must provide a certificate showing he or she has no convictions.

The new stipulations aim to put an end to cases like the one in the news last year of a convicted child-abuser, who had been working in Almeria for almost five years as a paediatrician. Carlos Alexander Rodriguez, currently serving a four-year jail sentence in Colombia for abusing a nineyear-old child, managed to flee the South American country with

his 13-year-old son and set up home in Almeria, where nobody asked about his past - not even the Andalucian Health Service, before giving him a job. Almeria awaits the extradition of Carlos Alexander, who will be brought back to Spain after completing his sentence in Colombia and tried for four alleged child abuse cases. The new Children and Teenagers Protection

Law aims to address these cases by creating a Central Register of Sexual Offenders, which will include confidential identity and genetic profile information on all convicted offenders. Applicants, after applying for posts in any work involving contact with children, must provide a certificate proving they do not figure on the new register.

Train-station terrapins on track for new home Migrants stage escape from a derelict prison A MASS escape by more than 40 migrants from two internment centres in the south of Spain is being investigated by the Government.

The Interior Ministry says around 35 escaped on Sunday from an Algeciras centre, near Spain’s southernmost tip, while the previous night, eight people broke out from a Murcia centre by cutting through a perimeter

fence. Ten were re-arrested during Sunday, and police are still believed to be searching for the others. The Algeciras centre is based in an old building that was once a prison, which can hold up to 190 people. Thousands of African immigrants living illegally in Morocco try to enter Spain’s enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta each year, or make perilous sea journeys to the mainland, hoping to reach Europe in the hope of making a better life for themselves.

AN attractive pond feature at a Madrid train station has become over-run by terrapins, which have been dumped there.

Now, though, a campaign has begun to safeguard the reptiles by preventing more people unloading their unwanted pets at the city’s Atocha station. Its centrepiece is a huge tropical plant display, surrounded by water. But the space has become drastically overcrowded with the tiny, turtle-like reptiles - around 250 ditched there over a 20-year period - that some are dying. Fortunately, campaigners on social media launched a petition last month on Change. org which has attracted nearly 9,000 signatures. They have called on

State-owned company Adif, which runs Spain’s stations, to do more to look after the abandoned pets. Yolanda Sanchez and Antonio Manas, who launched the movement, say the petition prompted a long-await-

ed meeting with Adif, at which the company committed to improving the filtration of the water in the next three months. But campaigners want to keep pressure on the company to allow rehoming, and prevent

more terrapins being dumped in the station. “The most important thing is to stop their entry into the pond,” they said. “We understand that is not possible in the short term, but it cannot be postponed for too long.”

Dumped cars – owners beware!

LOS Realejos Mayor Manuel Dominguez has launched a campaign to rid the streets of abandoned vehicles.

He is calling for the monitoring, reporting and removal of them, and warns that sanctions against the owners could be steep. The by-law states that a fine of up to 2,000 euros can be levied, via disciplinary proceedings from the regional Waste Act, brought by the regional govern-

ment. This states that abandoned cars are classified as a hazardous material, through pollution. The Mayor says: “The owner is responsible for the disposing of the vehicle, and must authorise the processed documentation. “By contacting the Council, he/she can use a free withdrawal service, avoiding heavy penalties and any problems arising in the field of safety, accessibility and parking.” The Environment and Security areas, controlled by Council-

lors Alexis Hernandez and Noelia González, have been co-ordinated to actions with advice from the municipal legal services, who report to the regional government to initiate the corresponding disciplinary procedures. At the moment, there are 15 pending complaints concerning abandoned cars in the street, which will be reported to the regional government. A significant number of them have to do with car owners who do not even live in Los Realejos.

Hostelry pay-days are finally settled THERE has been a breakthrough in the protracted wage talks between hotel owners and unions representing staff.

A collective agreement for the hostelry sector in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was signed this week between tourism employers Ashotel and workers union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), despite the absence of the General Union of Workers (UGT). Although the union had signed the preliminary agreement, officials did not endorse its full content. The controversial agreement, which covers a four-year period, provides for wage in-

creases in the first three years only. Ashotel President Jorge Marichal said after the signing of the collective agreement that, after about a month-and-a-half of negotiations, an agreement has been reached to achieve “stability in one of the most important sectors of the Canarian economy”. This agreement affects some 50,000 workers and a large number of companies, of which 250 are associated with Ashotel, said the President. Jorge Marichal gave an assurance that they had acted with “responsibility and loyalty” in negotiating an agreement that establishes “flexibility and competition” in the sector, and also with an “effort” to raise wages. The new agreement

will run for four years, up to 2019, with a salary increase of 4.5% over the next four years, unlike the previous agreement, which increased the sector’s wage by 2.1% in two years. For his part, José María Martínez, General Secretary of the Federation Services CCOO, explained that the increase would be progressive. And during that first year, the wages of workers will rise by 1.75%, 1.5% the second and the third by 1.25%. “This wage increase is higher than has been agreed in other conventions of the country,” he said, before explaining that the agreement included an adaptation of the general state regulations to the provincial framework and “bets on the stability of employment and job creation”.

Kids’ protection from raunchy online videos BRITISH music videos shown online will now come with an age rating in a bid to shelter children from the more outlandish ones.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), backed by the UK Government, is working with videosharing websites Vevo and YouTube to implement the grading system. The move was instigated because of the BBFC’s concern that children may be viewing images and hearing lyrics that are too adult. It commissioned research which found that 60% of children aged 10-17 believed their parents would not approve of the music videos they were watching. Sony Music, Univer-

sal Music and Warner Music have agreed to submit the videos they produce to the BBFC before uploading them to the sites, following a successful pilot. The videos will be given the same classifications as films - including certificates 12, 15 and 18 - indicating how old someone should be before viewing them. People who go online to watch the videos will have to confirm that they are over a certain age to access them. So far, 132 videos have been submitted by labels to the BBFC, which has rated 56 of them a “12 certificate” and 53 a “15 certificate”. The promo for Dizzee Rascal’s Couple Of Stack (pictured) was the only video to be rated 18 because the classifiers said it featured “strong bloody violence”, “gore” and

“very strong language”. The BBFC says its pilot scheme has proved so successful that it is being made permanent. David Cooke, BBFC Director, said: “We welcome this agreement. Parents want to see clear and recognisable age-ratings on online

music videos, and we look forward to building on the success of the pilot, in partnership with the industry, so that the public can have the trusted signposting they seek.” Baroness Joanna Shields, Minister for Internet Safety and Security, also welcomes the

move, saying it brings “internet services in line with the offline world”. She added: “Keeping children safe as they experience and enjoy all the benefits the internet has to offer is a key priority for this Government’s One Nation approach, to help families across Britain.

“We will continue to work with industry to develop ways to help parents better protect their children online from inappropriate music videos with explicit adult or violent content.” Music videos are often criticised for being too raunchy or violent, which merely seeks to add to their publicity. Some have also been accused of creating a poor body image for girls and violence against women. These age ratings will apply to music videos produced in the UK only. The vast majority of those considered controversial come from the US and will not be subject to the ratings. There will also be no control over videos broadcast on television, leaving some to suggest that the guidance does not go far enough.

PROSECUTORS who argued from the start that Olympic “Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius should have been convicted of murder, have begun an appeal against the original verdict.

The athlete was convicted of culpable homicide - equivalent to manslaughter - for shooting dead his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in February 2013. He was set to be released from prison today (Friday) after spending 10 months in jail. Instead, he will still be behind bars because his release was revoked on Wednesday

by the Justice Ministry because the decision had “no legal basis”. Pistorius was not found guilty of murder because, the judge said, the prosecution had not proved he intended to kill when he opened fire on his toilet door. The Paralympic sprint champion said he believed there was an intruder in his property. But during his trial, it was claimed he deliberately killed Ms Steenkamp after an argument. “We have filed the appeal,” said National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Luvuyo Mfaku. The Pistorius lawyers have a month to respond, and the Supreme Court is expected to hear the appeal in November, which means he will still be locked until then, to the delight of Ms Steenkamp’s still-grieving parents Barry and June, who said the delayed release “might provide justice for Reeva”. The Steenkamps’ lawyer,

Tanya Koen, said on their behalf: “Reeva is dead and all the good she would have done in this world is no longer possible. But perhaps the fact that this has happened on Reeva’s 32nd birthday is justice for her after all.” If the appeals court finds him guilty of murder, the athlete - known as the Blade Runner because of the prosthetic legs he wears on the track - could face at least 15 years in jail. Earlier this week, the parents issued a statement saying: “As a family, we want to continue to honour Reeva’s memory and will commemorate her birthday by focusing on the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation, celebrating her life, what she stood for and the joy she brought into so many lives.” In a letter to the parole board earlier, Ms Steenkamp’s family said: “10 months for taking a life is simply not enough.”

Slick dog-switch earns fortune for TV winner

TELEVISION viewers were misled by Britain’s Got Talent over the use of a second dog in the final of the ITV talent show in June, according to media watchdog Ofcom.

Jules O’Dwyer and her dog, Matisse, won the talent show- and £250,000, but it was later revealed that another dog, Chase, performed the tricky tightrope walk, which captivated everyone who saw it. While Ofcom acknowledged that ITV did not intend to deceive viewers, it said the channel was, ultimately, misled. Officials at ITV expressed “sincere regret” about the “unfortunate editorial mistake” and

says it will refund viewers who paid to vote for the winning act, or donate their money to charity. More than 1,000 complaints were made to Ofcom in the immediate aftermath of the final regarding the use of Chase, especially as Matisse appeared with owner Jules on stage alone at the end of the show. More than 13 million viewers had seen O’Dwyer and Matisse become the second dog act to win Britain’s Got Talent, following Ashleigh Butler and Pudsey in 2012. The voting figures showed they won by just 2% - gaining 22.6% of votes compared with 20.4% for magician Raven. Ofcom said ITV broke a TV code rule, which states that “broadcasters must ensure that viewers... are not materially misled about any

broadcast competition or voting”. The watchdog added: “In this case, the fact - as evidenced by numerous complainants to Ofcom – that many viewers were not aware that a central part of a dog agility act was performed by a second animal, indicates the licencee did not take sufficient steps to ensure that the broadcast was not materially misleading.” When the switch was revealed, O’Dwyer told ITV’s Lorraine programme: “Matisse is a little bit afraid of heights so, although he could physically do it, Chase is the dog who says, ‘I’m the action dog’. “He plays the double for him - every dog has a different character.” In an official statement, ITV said: “The Britain’s Got Talent production team apol-

ogised at the time for not making it clearer to the judges and viewers at home that three dogs were involved in the final performance. There was never any intention to mislead viewers.” Ofcom said: “We have no reason to believe there was any intention to deceive viewers that the tightrope walk actually involved a second dog. The majority of votes cast for Jules’ act were received through the free voting app. “However, we accept that some viewers who voted for the winning act by a paid voting route may wish to seek a refund, or that the cost of their vote be donated in full to the Royal Variety charity. “Details about how to obtain a refund, or to request that a refund be donated to the charity, are now on our website.”

UP to 10 million prescriptions for antibiotics are handed out each year to patients who don’t need them - many by “soft-touch doctors.

The NHS medicines watchdog NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) says some patients are so determined to be treated with the drugs for minor infections that they will seek out doctors who are happy to oblige But in new guidance for health professionals, NICE says inappropriate use of antibiotics is causing a rapid growth in superbugs which are resistant to the drugs. Without urgent action, infections will have to be treated surgically in future if drugs no longer work. Research shows nine out of 10 GPs feel under pressure to prescribe antibiotics, and 97% of patients who ask for them, get them. Professor Mark Baker, director of the NICE

Soft-touch doctors are dishing out needless antibiotics

Centre for Clinical Practice, said: “It’s entrenched in our society. There are people who are addicted to the idea of having antibiotics. If they know there’s a soft-touch doctor, they go to them. “Often, they will go to their GP and if unsuccessful - will then try another one.” Health commentator Dr Monah Mansoori said doctors were aware of the problem. But she rejected the idea that many of her colleagues were seen as a “soft touch”. Dr Mansoori told Sky News: “Most of us aren’t,” although she conceded that s o m e times, it was awskward to

say No to patients. “Certainly at times of great strain a n d

pressure on Gps, it is very, very difficult” she admitted. “But

you have to have a very measured discussion with your patient about the benefits of, and drawbacks of, being on antibiotics. Prof Baker said previous guidance from NICE on respiratory tract infections should have resulted in a 22% fall in antibiotic prescribing. In fact, use of the drugs has since risen. The new advice for doctors and nurses urges them to discuss the risks of taking antibiotics for mild infections that clear up on their own. “They can cause allergy and upset the normal bacterial balance in the gut,” he said. “They do more harm than good in some patients.”

15 CW

The guidelines call for antibiotic stewardship programmes that monitor the use of the drugs locally. Doctors who prescribe inappropriate antibiotics - the wrong dose or for the wrong duration - could be challenged. David Battie, an Antiques Roadshow expert, had multiple courses of different antibiotics in a failed attempt to cure an infection that spread to his bones after he broke his leg. Eventually, the area was cut out and patched with a skin graft, leaving significant scarring. And he is still in pain. He told Sky News: “It’s people turning up with their child and saying, ‘Little Johnny has a sniffle’. And to get rid of them, the doctor writes a prescription. “They don’t realise that by doing that, they are creating a problem of massive proportions.” Mr Battie is working with the Antibiotic Research UK charity to raise awareness of the threat.

Passengers’ bonanza for low-cost airlines BUDGET airlines cashed in on July’s stupendous air traffic levels at Spanish airports, with nearly 12 million passengers taking advantage of the cheap flights.

More than 23 million people passed through the country’s air hubs - the highest July figure ever recorded - and more than half of them used low-cost carriers, which registered a 7.9% increase on the same month last year. A study released on Monday showed that 50.7% of air passengers in Spain flew on budget airlines, with Ryanair, easyJet and Vueling transporting 34% of all international passengers in July. Traditional airlines also saw a modest increase of 2.7% compared with July 2014. In all, the three budget operators transported 34% of all international passengers in July, and 66% of those who used low-cost airlines. “The three companies

have shown a growing development, with Vueling standing out among them for another month,” said the survey, compiled by the Institute of Tourism Studies. In the first seven months of the year, nofrills airlines have flown around 20.16 million passengers in Spain 9.7% more than during the same period last year - and captured 49.4% of all air traffic. The bigger airline companies also saw

“much more moderate increases” in passengers between January and July, with a 1.6% rise in traffic. Britons were the biggest group of foreign nationals to arrive in Spain last month with low-cost carriers. Nevertheless, there were increases in the number of those travelling from other countries, such as France (a 22.4% rise), Italy (17.4%), Ireland (12.9%) and Belgium (6.8%).

By region, Madrid received the most visitors on budget airlines (a 37% rise from last year) followed by Catalonia (9.3%) and Valencia (6.9%). Low-cost operators have dominated the Spanish air-traffic landscape for years. Ryanair carried the most passengers in Spain, transporting 3.32 million people - 4.1% more than the year before - followed by Vueling (2.47m passengers last month) and EasyJet (1.82 million).

The group, known for taking down criminals and for controversy since its 1979 inception, patrolled the area with torches for hours one night last week, citing a 26% rise in crime this year in the park as their motivation. Founder Curtis Sliwa said: “We realise things are much better than they were - but we want it to stay that way.”

Disney’s Star Wars is simply jaw-dropping DISNEY is to develop Star Wars Lands at its theme parks in California and Florida in what chief executive and chairman Bob Iger describes as “a jaw-dropping new world”. Each attraction - at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando - will comprise 14 acres, and both will feature the Cantina. That’s the infamous hub of rogue smugglers and traders in the films, and a ride where participants will be able to take control of the Millennium Falcon. The news was revealed at the annual D23 Exposition in Anaheim by the Disney boss, who said the project was “the largest single-themed

expansion in the company’s history”. There was no mention of cost, or a launch date, but the announcement comes as fans are gearing up for the first instalment of a new trilogy of Star Wars films, kicking off with The Force Awakens in December. Harrison Ford, who reprises the role of Han Solo, was welcomed to the convention stage with a standing ovation. He led the cast of the new film, including Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o and British newcomer John Boyega, telling the 7,500 fans present: “It’s a great thing to be here with you, who made this whole thing happen. I couldn’t be happier.”

World champ’s fascist tribute

Guardian Angels fly back to tackle New York crime WELCOME to a return of New York’s crimefighting Guardian Angels volunteers, who are back in Central Park for the first time in 20 years amid concern over rising crime.

17 CW

Sliwa started the group after violence on New York’s Subway system, and crimes like the “Central Park jogger” rape case, made New York’s famed green expanse a symbol of urban danger. The organisation swelled to more than 130 chapters around the world. But its New York patrols were scaled back shortly after Rudy Giuliani, who became New York Mayor in 1994, was perceived to have got to grips with the city’s crime problems. After years of falling crime, New York has seen killings rise by 9% this year and robberies in Central Park double so far, compared with 2014. But New York’s Police Department says that overall crime in the park

is down more than 80% against 20 years ago and that overall crime is lower than two years ago. Mayor Bill de Blasio says the park remains “absolutely safe” and suggests that police need no Guardian Angels. Sliwa, who has been critical of the New York Mayor, said: “The NYPD is the best-qualified force to handle the situation.” While police in patrol cars and high-powered lights deter criminals in the park, Sliwa said the authorities often fail to cover the park’s more secluded spots. He claimed that on their latest patrols, volunteers prompted some young men to move on amid reports that they had been throwing rocks at people in

the park, and the Angels broke up a shoving match between two other men. Silwa is a radio talkshow host and a critic of Democratic Mayor Mr de Blasio’s policing policies. After Silwa founded the Guardian Angels, they were welcomed by some but dismissed as publicity-seeking vigilantes by others. The organisation suffered a blow in the midNineties when Sliwa admitted faking some early subway rescues to generate publicity. He was nearly killed in a 1992 kidnap and shooting, for which Mafia scion John ‘Junior’ Gotti was accused of ordering. But prosecutors gave up on the case after four juries failed to reach a verdict.

SPAIN’S world badminton champion Carolina Marin couldn’t resist a smile on top of the podium when the old fascist-era Spanish national anthem was played at Sunday’s medal ceremony. Carolina successfully defended her title in Jakarta on Sunday against India’s Saina Nehwal. But the version of Spain’s Royal March dated back to General Francisco Franco’s far-right dictatorship. Since the death of Franco, the Royal March has been played without words - and the mistake in Jakarta clearly amused Marin, whose reaction featured in a YouTube video clip. The words were written by poet Jose Maria Peman in 1928 and

were adopted by Franco’s nationalists in 1939 after their victory over left-wing forces in the Spanish Civil War. The Badminton World Federation (BWF), which apologised for the gaff, put out a statement saying: “An older version of the anthem was played during the Women’s Singles medal ceremony following Marin’s retention of the title she won a year ago. “The Badminton World Federation and the hosts, the Indonesia Badminton Association, sincerely regret this unfortunate mistake.” The old anthem includes the words: “Glory to the Fatherland that knew how to follow, over the blue of the sea the path of the sun.”

Diabetes - the stark reality DIABETES UK has warned that the number of people with the disease has increased by nearly 60% in the past 10 years.

More than 3.3 million people have some form of the condition, which is up from 2.1 million eight years ago. The inability of many sufferers to control sugar levels in the blood can lead to blindness and amputations and is a huge drain on NHS resources. The NHS is convinced that the drastic sideeffects are down to poor lifestyle, which is a major factor behind the rise. But Diabetes UK has called for the NHS to improve care for pa-

tients - and for greater efforts to prevent diabetes. Some 90% of cases are type 2 diabetes, which is the form closely linked to diet and obesity. People with type 1 generally develop it in childhood and are unable to produce the hormone insulin to control their blood sugar levels. Dr Joan St John, a Brent GP in north-west London, where diabetes levels are some of the highest in the country, said the condition had become incredibly widespread. She told the BBC News website: “It’s very noticeable in that not a week goes by that you don’t make a new diagnosis of diabetes, at least one, if not two or three. Previously, that might have been one a month.”

The complications of uncontrolled blood sugar levels can be severe, including nerve damage, loss of vision and organ damage. Barbara Young, head of Diabetes UK, says the complications of the disease put pressure on the NHS - the condition even leads to 135 foot amputations every week across the country. Dr St John added: “Unfortunately, the historical myth that it is not a serious condition is still retained by some people, and you have to dispel that myth.” She added: “One of the most miserable complications is neuropathy (nerve damage), which can cause a constant nagging, gnawing ache, usually in the legs or feet. This can be really disturbing and there is no cure for it,” Recently-published

data showed that diabetes medication now accounts for 10% of the NHS drugs bill. Nearly £869m was spent on drugs, including insulin and metformin, marking a sharp rise from the £514m spent a decade ago, when the drugs accounted for just 6.6% of the prescriptions budget. Part of GPs’ pay is linked to diagnosing and treating diabetes and has been for years - and The UK Government says this is to improve care. The reasons why levels of type 1 diabetes are increasing are not understood. However, the explanation for the soaring cases of type 2 are being placed squarely on the nation’s ballooning waistline. Ms Young says the Government must act

to prevent new cases and improve treatment for those already affected. “Diabetes already costs the NHS nearly £10bn a year, and 80% of this is spent on managing avoidable complications,” she said. “So there is huge potential to save money and reduce pressure on NHS hospitals and services by providing better care to prevent people with diabetes from developing devastating and costly complications.” Dr Martin McShane. NHS England Director of Long-Term Conditions, added: “These figures are a stark warning and reveal the increasing cost of diabetes. “We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, it’s time to get serious about lifestyle change.”

World’s oldest flower dates back 130m years

It’s a blooming miracle SCIENTISTS believe that the oldest flower on Earth is a beautiful aquatic plant, found in Spain and dating back to the start of the Cretaceous period. New analysis of the fossilised remains from central Spain and the Pyrenees show that the plant is about 130 million years old, which means it was around at the same time as feathered dinosaurs. The plant, Montsechia vidalii, resembles the modern-day coontail commonly used to populate aquariums - and is thought to have grown underwater in shallow lakes. It takes the “world’s oldest flower” title from another ancient plant, Archaefructus sinensis, discovered in 125 million-year-old fossils from China’s Liaoning Province. “The ‘first flower’ is a bit of a poetic concept but, that aside, we do believe this is the oldest

we have discovered so far,” says David Dilcher at Indiana University, who led the analysis. To study the ancient plant, Dilcher and his team slowly dissolved the limestone around more than 1,000 fossils. This left them with small fragments of the plant that could then be bleached and their structure examined, using powerful microscopes. The plant appears to have had no roots or petals. Its leaves were arranged in two forms: either in a spiral or opposite one another

along an axis. The plant sprouted several tiny flowers, each of which contained a single seed. Animals in this time period hadn’t developed any role in the dispersal of seeds, says Dilcher. Instead, the plant is thought to have separate male and female flowers. It seems likely that the seeds were released straight into the water, where they floated off to fertilise another plant. “This is a fascinating and provocative analysis of the new fossils,” says Sam Brockington, a research fellow in the

department of plant sciences at Cambridge University. “It has always been difficult to say whether the first flowering plants emerged in aquatic conditions, but this paper emphasises how important aquatic environments were for the earliest flowering plants.” Sometime in the middle of the Cretaceous period, the diversification of the flowering plant population exploded, developing into the beautiful blooms we know today, as well as influencing the wildlife that evolved alongside. Dilcher says that we wouldn’t be here at all if it weren’t for plants like Montsechia vidalii. “We are a product of the many stages of evolution that went hand-inhand with the evolution of flowering plants,” he says. Bernard Gomez of Claude Bernard University, Lyon, and co-author of the paper, which

is published this week in PNAS, believes there may yet be an even older flowering plant. “There’s evidence of pollen dispersed in fossils that are around 140 million years old,” he says. Dilcher adds: “One thing is for sure - we need to understand as much as we can about flowering plant evolution because, right now, we’re facing a world crisis.” Most modern flowering plants need animal pollinators to reproduce, with bees serving that role for many of our most important crops. Yet bees are declining in the US and Europe. “This plant shows us where it all began,” says Dilcher. “If we know more about their evolution, we might come across alternative pollinators that are hidden out of sight today but played a role in the past that we could encourage again.”

Rail fares galloping ahead of wage rises RAIL fares have risen almost three times faster than wages over the past five years, according to a new report.

It states that season tickets and other regulated fares have gone up by 25% since 2010, compared with a 9% increase in average pay. The report was released by the Action for Rail campaign, which advocates that train services should be run by the public sector. It comes ahead of the release of inflation figures, which are used to calculate fare rises from January 2016. A spokesman for the group said: “Through our high fares and taxes, passengers and taxpayers are subsidising company profits and shareholder dividends, while services are overcrowded and understaffed. Next year’s fares are expected to see some of the lowest hikes in decades. But the report argued that if train services were run by the public sector, savings could be made and passed on to passengers. Frances O’Grady, TUC General Secretary, said the fares “rocketed” over the past five years and left many commuters “seriously out of pocket”. She said a Government plan to cap annual rises in regulated fares does not go far enough. “If ministers really want to help hard-pressed commuters, they need to return services to the public sector,” added O’Grady. “This is a fair, more sustainable option and would allow much bigger savings to be passed on to passengers. Introducing an arbitrary cap on fares is simply passing the bill on to taxpayers.” Rail Minister Claire Perry acknowledged that “rail fares put a strain on family finances”. But she added: “That’s why, for fares we can control, we are putting an end to inflation-busting fare increases.”

Interest rates are still rock-bottom

DESPITE all the hype, “Super Thursday” (6th August) was a disappointment after all, with Sterling wobbling a bit against its main counterparts.

At least two members of the MPC (Monetary Policy Committee) were expected to vote for an increase in interest rates, which resulted in the Pound/Euro and Pound/Dollar currency pairings dropping. Bank of England chief Mark Carney said a rate rise would happen “at some point”, which helped the Pound regain some losses overnight, but added to the confusion. Unemployment increased by 25,000 in the three months to June, which meant the Pound had a bad day at the office. Average earnings were disappointing, even though it appeared recently that they were going to improve. Jobs growth and earnings growth are both key drivers for the Bank of England to consider increasing interest rates.

During Tuesday night’s news, David Miles, an MPC committee member, felt the interest rate would rise quite soon. Yet at the last meeting, he voted to keep the rates the same. He said he was the most confident he had been about the UK economy since joining the Bank six years ago. Miles supported comments from Kristin Forbes (a fellow-member of the MPC), who believes it would undermine the UK’s recovery to wait too long to raise interest rates. From the last committee meeting, at which members voted 8-1 to keep the rates

on hold, coupled with statements from David Miles and Kristin Forbes, the indication was that the balance was changing because it was the first time for months the decision had not been unanimous. Carney has said that when rates do begin to rise, they will do so slowly. Last month he said the judgement day for a Bank-rate rise was “drawing closer”, but could not be “predicted in advance”. The verdict would be based on economic data, including wage growth, productivity and import figures. Markets understood Carney’s comments

Canaries’ 997m EU fund will help create new jobs THE European Commission this week approved 997 million euros of EU funds to the Canary Islands for the next six years.

“I hope this will have a real impact on the economic prospects of the region, creating new jobs and highly qualified workers through regional research and development work,” said Carina Crete, European Commissioner for Regional Policy. The total budget

for the Canaries Operational Programme amounts to 1,170m euros, of which 280m will be used to strengthen investment in research and development. The remaining money will be used for specific measures to promote social inclusion and respect for the environment. The Canaries’ programme also includes measures that will better connect the archipelago, for example, by improving transport services. The programme seeks, among other ob-

jectives, to hit 100% of the Canarian population with broadband internet access and provide 33% of local businesses with an online service. The EU funds are an improvement of the 900 million which the Canary Islands received from 2007-2013. Rosa Vila, Minister of Finance of the Canary Islands Government, described it as “great news”. In a statement to the Press, she stressed that the dish would help “improve competitiveness” in the Canary Islands.

- combined with evidence in the Bank’s recent Inflation Report - as a sign that any rate rise was likely to be put back until early 2016. On the local front, property prices in the Canary and Balearic Islands experienced 6% growth from the previous month, according to research from specialist property valuation consultancy Tinsa. This adds further evi-

dence to the theory that Spain’s property market is experiencing a turnaround. Data from the firm reveals that property in the Canary Islands is cheaper than in the Balearics, the latter being home to five of Spain’s most expensive property hotspots. But the former is not to be forgotten because prices are still on the rise. Jordi Robinat,

Chief Executive of property developer Arum Group, told the Financial Times that the Canary Islands were very special. He described them as being like “Arizona in the ocean”, and noted that they continued to be popular among expats and residents. However, house-price growth is slower than in the Balearics, which is good news for anyone looking to purchase a property in Tenerife and the rest of the Canaries. Shares fall as the economy wobbles RENEWED fears over the health of the global economy yesterday (Thursday) led to further falls in shares and the price of oil worldwide.

Chinese authorities intervened again on the stock market to little effect, with shares in Shanghai falling 1.5%. And in Washington, expectations of a US interest rate rise faded after Federal Reserve policy-makers said the economy was not yet in the right place. European markets in Paris and Frankfurt were down 1% in morning trade, and London’s benchmark FTSE 100 index shed 0.5%. The price of Brent crude oil was down 1.1% at 46.66

dollars a barrel, while US crude was down 0.4% at $40.95. On Wednesday evening, the Fed released minutes from its meeting on 28-29th July, showing that one policy-maker was ready to vote for an interest rate rise at the meeting. Overall, the Fed thought conditions for a US rate rise “were approaching”, but the economy was not ready yet. Other policy-makers remained concerned that inflation would stay weak because of the strong dollar and falling commodity prices, which act as a double depressant on imports. The Fed’s key interest rate has been kept near zero since December 2008. There has been speculation that the Fed will

raise rates at its September meeting, and last month, Fed chair Janet Yellen thought a rate rise this year was likely. Following the release of the Fed’s minutes, US stocks rallied briefly but then fell back, while the dollar weakened on the currency markets. The Dow Jones index ended Wednesday trading down 0.9%. The committee also cited China as a potential problem, saying that a “material slowdown” in the Chinese economy could affect the US economic outlook. The FOMC’s meeting came before last week’s action by China to weaken its currency. After days of volatility, Chinese equities again traded lower on Thursday, despite Beijing’s efforts to calm markets.

Animal Mums ITV1, 19.00

In episode 1, we begin in the precious moments straight after mum gives birth. We’ll witness her first magical bond with baby and learn about the importance of the senses as she welcomes her new born. We discover tricks for feeding her babies, and the incredible ways animal mums protect their young. We also meet some amazing animals who have come through against the odds to prove just what wonderful mums they are. When a lamb is born, mum must get to work straight away. Senses such as hearing, smell and touch are vital for getting baby on her feet as soon as possible. With reassuring bleats, mum starts to clean her little one from head to toe, licking and nuzzling getting the blood flowing and stimulating her muscles. For many herd animals, being up and running as quickly as possible is a matter of life or death. We meet a new-born foal who will be galloping with the herd before the sun goes down. At San Diego Zoo Safari Park, gorilla mum-to-be Imani experienced difficulties when giving birth and was rushed for an emergency Csection. It was hoped she would be united with her baby as soon as she came round, but new-born Joanne had pneumonia and had to be treated before being returned to her mum. With every day that passed Park staff became increasingly concerned that Imani wouldn’t recognise her offspring. Eventually, 13 days later, they were able to attempt a reintroduction; to everyone’s huge relief and joy Imani took Joanne up into her arms. The pair have been inseparable since. Dolly the Gloucester old spot pig has her work cut out feeding her 8 hungry piglets. Adam Henson conducts an experiment to see if it’s true that piglets return to the same teat at every feed. After it became clear to staff at Living Coasts Aquarium that South American fur seal Grace was unable to nurse her new born Klara, they had to step in to ensure her survival. Keeper Lee became Klara’s surrogate mother feeding her night and day, teaching her to swim and even mimicking her noises and speaking ‘seal’. Highland cows hide their new born calves while they feed. This is an instinct that will have developed as a way of protecting their young from predators. Today, the predators have gone but the instinct survives and it can be a bit of a headache for famer Keith Jackson and his daughter Jess as they try to keep an eye on his herd. Three years ago endangered white rhino Thandi survived a horrific poaching attempt, which left her with a mutilated face and no horn. Vet Will Fowlds and volunteer Angie Goody have been treating this remarkable rhino since. Against all odds, in January this year, Thandi had a calf, named Thembi (meaning Hope). But having lost her only means of protecting herself and her baby, times will always be hard for this pair.

Tommy and Tuppence think they are getting somewhere, untill their first major suspect Major Khan is killed at the local Veterans Ball. It turns out Khan was looking for N too, for a different reason - and N got to him first. And so Tommy and Tuppence turn their attention to their fellow occupants of the Sans Souci to find the potential nuclear bomb thief. Tommy has his eyes on Carl Denim, a shifty young beatnik who loves to flirt (especially with Tuppence) and is spending a lot of unexplained time around the coast, whereas Tuppence is convinced the culprit is Mrs Sprot, a glamorous and sensual woman, apparently married, but travelling alone. She was certainly in Khan’s room the night of his death, but was it to cover up their affair, or the fact that she is N? There are so many potential suspects and dead ends that Tommy and Tuppence get their wires crossed and let their guard down - and it’s Tommy who inadvertently ends up in the lion’s den. He finds himself in the home of an apparently kindly old sea dog, Commander Haydock, who is not what he seems to be…

World’s Busiest Railway 2015

21st August - 27th August 2015

M onday

BBC2, 21.00

As part of the BBC India Season, Dan Snow, Anita Rani and Robert Llewellyn are in Mumbai exploring the world’s busiest railway. From their base at the historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus they reveal the science, systems and staff responsible for keeping this supersized transport system running to schedule. In this opening episode, Dan, Anita and Robert try commuting Mumbai-style, tackling what is known as ‘super dense crush load’ on the world’s busiest commuter trains. With as many as 14 people packed into a square metre, these trains are more than twice as packed as the most crowded European trains. Passengers hang from the sides of trains and cross the tracks, so they’re in for quite a ride. 2,300km north east of Mumbai, John Sergeant (pictured) is in the foothills of the Himalayas, to ride Darjeeling’s steam powered hill railway. He reminisces about a more romantic age of rail travel and reveals the historical connection between tea and trains. Robert heads up into mission control for the station - the control room – to explain how the Train Management System programmes safe routes for all 1,500 daily trains through the station’s complex mesh of tracks. And the cameras are on board with the astonishing dabba wallahs - a crack team of couriers who deliver 200,000 home cooked lunches to offices all over Mumbai. With an error rate of one in 16 million, their system is rated as one of the most efficient in the world.

Panorama BBC1, 19:30 The Schools Scandal: Playing the System. Demand for places at high-achieving state schools across the UK far outstrips supply, turning the schools admissions process into a battleground. For many parents it has become one of the most stressful moments in their lives. The losers in this extraordinary educational lottery are often the locals - locked out of the best schools by people playing the system. Panorama goes to Havering to follow the council’s campaign to clamp down on abuse of the system and follows the fortunes of parents who’ve applied for places in one of the most oversubscribed boroughs for primary school places in the country.

The Three Day Nanny Channel 4, 20:00

This time, even battle-hardened Nanny Kathryn Mewes is shocked by what she finds when she takes on a family more used to the rock and roll lifestyle than ordered family life. Dad is a celebrity tattooist used to travelling with rock bands and the rest of his family. After years on the road this house has no routine whatsoever; the boys do what they like when they like, normally going to bed around midnight. Kathryn soon witnesses the two boys running riot and ignoring their mum and dad. She is not happy with what she sees - the boys spending up to six hours a day watching and playing on their tablets and smartphones. It’s all change when Kathryn gets cracking, giving Tara a much needed boost of confidence. And whilst Kathryn is getting the children to put down their gadgets, she has an even bigger battle on her hands to get dad Kevin to put aside his work and concentrate on being a dad.

One Born Every Minute Channel 4, 21:00

The Bafta Award-winning series continues from Liverpool Women’s Hospital: the largest and busiest maternity unit in Europe. A mum takes her son’s place to welcome a grandchild she’s only just found out about, a dad turns poet to help his panicking wife through the birth of a baby he never realised he wanted so much, and an emotional mum can’t stop laughing during her daughter’s labour. Heidi, who’s 16, is rushed to Liverpool Women’s by ambulance. By her side is her mum Jo, who’s 44, and Adele, the 34-year-old mother of Heidi’s ex-boyfriend, the father of the baby. Adele is shocked to find out she’s going to be a grandmother so young: ‘I never imagined being a grandmother at 34. I didn’t know until a couple of weeks before Heidi was due to have the baby.’ Adele’s son has learning difficulties and she thinks he wouldn’t cope with the birth so she wants to be there in his place instead. Despite being a stranger, she wants to forge a bond with Heidi, Jo and the baby.

The Great British Bake Off BBC1, 20:00

For the nine bakers left, it’s time to tackle the sweet ending to every meal - desserts. The signature challenge is creme brulees. The bakers need to achieve the perfect wobble of the creme and an audible crack of the brulee. It’s not easy though, as they have to brulee under the grill, not with a blow torch. Mary picks the technical challenge - the spanische windtorte from Austria, with a nod to Spain and some Swiss and French meringue thrown in. It maybe only be meringue, cream and soft fruit, but it’s tricky to construct and needs to be decorated with delicate fondant violets - if only the bakers knew what a violet looked like! Not one, not two, but three baked cheesecakes make up the showstopper. Mary and Paul are looking for faultless baked cheesecakes, beautifully flavoured and stacked in a showstopping way. The bakers don’t disappoint with their inventive ingredient combinations.

Stephen Fry in Central America ITV1, 21.00

In episode one, Stephen begins his journey on the Sante Bridge separating El Paso in Texas from Ciudad Juarez in Mexico, an important transit point for the drug cartels and considered one of the most dangerous cities in Mexico. He boards the converted school bus he’ll be travelling on, to avoid attracting the attention of the locals and heads towards Chihuahua. En route, his driver takes him to see some of the local cowboys before he experiences the enduring patriotism of a local hero, the revolutionary Pancho Villa, who lead the Army of the North, in the revolutionary war of 1914. Boarding the El Chepe train he heads into the Sierra Madre mountains and the magnificent Copper Canyon, where he overcomes his fears and takes one of the longest zip wire rides in the world, 80 miles an hour two kilometres down, to where the Tamahumara people live. On seeing the canyon for the first time, Stephen says: “Look at that, it’s absolutely stunning. I’m tempted to say Arizona eat your heart out. It’s extraordinary, it’s sort of more beautiful than the Grand Canyon.” Leaving the canyon, he arrives in the old silver mining town of Real de Catorce. Once booming with the fortunes of its wares, the town fell from grace in 1900 but is booming once again, thanks to the tourist industry. Stephen arrives just in time to experience their annual fiesta celebrating the Revolution of Pancho Villa, with donkey races highlighting the importance of the animal to both miners and revolutionaries. He is persuaded to join in the festivities with a techno tribal dance group and later heads out to the countryside to meet a local Huichol shaman. The shaman shows him the benefits of the hallucinogenic peyote cactus, although Stephen refrains from indulging. Nearing Mexico City, he takes to the skies in a hot air balloon to witness the incredible aerial view of the vast ruins of Teotihuacan, the greatest city of pre-Aztec Mexico. Celebrated archaeologist Sergio Gomez gives him a tour of the extensive excavations under the temple of the god Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent.

The Other Prince William Channel 4, 21:00

The Secret History strand continues with the story of a star-crossed royal romance that begins in Tokyo in 1968 and ends in tragedy with the death of one of the British royal family’s forgotten stars. Prince William of Gloucester was the Queen’s cousin and a pageboy at her wedding in 1947, when he was fourth in line to the British throne. Described as the ‘most dazzling Royal of his generation,’ his good looks and playboy lifestyle made him the idol of a young Prince Charles. In 1968, Prince William embarked on a forbidden love affair with Zsuzsi Starkloff, a glamorous divorcee, model and former air hostess. For the first time on camera, Zsuzsi tells the story of their forbidden relationship, which caused panic behind the doors of Buckingham Palace, where the royal family was still living under the shadow of the scandal of Edward VIII’s abdication for the love of Mrs Simpson.

Entertainment

21st August - 27th August 2015

By Jamie Droo OVER the next few weeks, the Tenerife Entertainment Awards will be mentioned a lot on this page. As you know, at this time of year the social networks and local media are a hive of activity concerning the event.

It is regarded by most as THE entertainment event of the year - and it is marketed by the organisers as exactly that! Over the years, I have had first-hand experience of how much work goes in to the production of the day. Just one element of the production is the huge feature of the stage graphics. A massive screen, always present, projects images of the sponsors for each award, and the nominees in each category, along with the voiceover for each element This alone is different every year and has to be made from scratch. It is put together with so many hours of work, spread over the weeks leading up to the actual curtain going up. There are also running orders to sort out, stage, management, seating plans, ticket sales, sound and lighting and for the live vote category on the day. There are also sound checks for the performers, and don’t forget the all-important awards themselves, which need to be sourced and engraved with the TEAs’ branding. And, naturally, champagne and flowers! So many things happen behind the scenes, all adding up to ensure this is Tenerife’s entertainment event of the year. It is always a sellout and always a roaring success. Every eventuality has a plan, and every mishap a contingency plan. Over the years, there has never been any huge mishap in the running of the show. And if some-

37 CW

TEAs’ big day doesn’t just happen in a flash!

thing has gone wrong, the audience will never have been aware because the planning and preparation for each event has been second to none. During the first few weeks since the launch of this year’s TEAs, the nomination process has begun - and this causes a split in opinions among many. It seems there are three camps within the entertainer community. Most jump in with both feet and immerse themselves in the celebration of the entertainment scene. They get fully involved in promoting themselves for an award. Then there are those who keep a dignified silence, yet would be happy to receive a nomination or an award if it happened. And then there are a few who choose to mock the whole event. The latter, I would say, are a small minority. Those who do choose to promote are ultimately, chasing an award. I don’t see anything wrong with that if it is done in the right way. After all, when the British music industry holds awards ceremonies, the mainstream artistes don’t have to promote themselves because they are signed to huge record labels and management companies, who do all the promotion for them and, in the process, take a rather large percentage of the artiste’s earnings along the way.

This, for the artiste, is written off on his/her individual income tax bill. Just ask Gary Barlow! Here in Tenerife, the entertainers are selfemployed and do not have the benefit of bigcompany promotion. So the obvious choice is to promote their act on social networks. I would vote for anyone who creates a way of promoting himself (or herself, of course) in a different way to the norm. For instance, the status updates you see on the likes of Facebook all seem to read the same way, so it becomes repetitive. I haven’t seen it done yet, but it would be good to see some promotion done with video footage - not necessarily of the artiste working and doing his/her thing on stage but a candid and sincere plea for support. It could be made funny or serious, and could be as elaborate as the individual would like it to be. More sincerity could be displayed in a short video than in a 200-character status update. It is then down to the artiste’s own imagination and application of creativity. The more effort you

put in to something, the more you will get out of it. The main point is that the self-promotion side always seems to come under fire from the critics, so the most sincere and creative approach will always receive the most support. I’m not saying all the act who would like to involve themselves should make a promotional video plea for nominations and votes. But social media is such a powerful tool, and simply writing a status update every few days is like driving a Ferrari and never getting out of first gear. An example of social

media power would be the first artiste to be signed up from her promotion on YouTube. Sandi Thom’s song I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker was a huge success and she began her career in her bedroom making videos and posting them on various networking sites. If you were to do a Google search for “the most successful advertising campaign on social networks,” you would probably be surprised at the results. A lot of success has come from unknown individuals, who have managed to tap in to the power that these platforms have. Ultimately, the TEAs are about an award for an entertainer. But by promoting in the best possible way and using everything that technology has to offer, it reaches a wider audience and ensures that more people in the world know about Tenerife.

This Island has a unique circuit, which is saturated with talent. So many areas, from Los Gigantes all the way to Silencio and everywhere in between, all offer entertainment provided by the many acts that tread the boards. So much variety and such diversity in each field of entertainment will always ensure that holiday-makers always leave here with good memories of what they have seen and heard on the stages of our entertainment venues. On the big day, there is a live performance category, and every year there is speculation about which category will be selected. This is always going to be one of the coveted awards because it is a live vote from the people right in front of the performer, there and then! Some categories would be impossible to use in the live vote. For example, a compere could not display his or her skills within a seven-minute time-frame and neither could a DJ. So those two categories are probably not going to be in the mix at this year’s event. But it won’t be long before we find out who has been nominated and, shortly after that, the live category will be announced. The 9th TEAs is shaping up well, and I’m sure that everyone who supports it will be waiting with anticipation to learn who will be nominated this year. Good luck to one and all.

21st August - 27th August 2015

Island’s major wine success TENERIFE wines continue to bring home the awards. The cellar of La Laguna Balcon has scooped five major awards this week in an international mountain wine competition held in Italy. It was organised by the Centre for Research, Study, Safeguarding, Coordination and Valorisation of Mountain Viticulture (Cervim). Just two years after registering, the Tacoronte-Acentejo winery, owned by winemaker Manuel Capote and Ricardo Herrera, achieved what others have failed to get in more than 20 years of development: a gold medal and best wine of the competition. They did this with the Ainhoa Dulce, of the 2014 harvest - a dipple that had already this year scooped another gold medal in a competition held in Lyon. This week, they scooped a gold medal for Capote Tinto; gold medal for HC White of Grape

Ink; silver medal for Barrica Tinto HC Castellana; and silver medal for Ainhoa Blanco Seco. “What is the secret of our success? Hard work, humility and a great team,” said Capote. “So far, much of the work is by handcraft.” Located in the area of Vallito in Las Mercedes, La Laguna, Balcon bottled 40,000 litres last harvest. For the 2015 harvest, however, things have changed. With new machinery - they acquired a pneumatic press and state-of-theart cooling equipment. The winery will be filtering 97,000 litres of wine, taken from the eight varieties they work with. “We use Canarian varieties only,” adds Manuel Capote, who also stresses that La Laguna “deserves” to have a wine heritage. For the most part, the grapes come from El Sauzal, along with vines from Garimba, Guamasa, Tacoronte and Las Mercedes.

Martini’s quality taste!

LAST weekend saw the opening of the eighth Martini Restaurant in the South, situated at The Patch in Las Americas.

It is in keeping with Martini’s usual high standards, with the open kitchen, the light and airy restaurant décor and, of course, the food. Owners Tino and Peter greeted us with a smile and showed us to our table on the large terrace. These Italian eateries are sparkling gems, with their blend of family atmosphere and modern touches, which give you a genuine culinary experience. Good service and high quality! It offers a superb menu and equally extraordinary service so, if you want to eat superb food, be treated with the utmost care and have an unforget-

table experience, then Martini Restaurants are for you. If you’ve not yet visited one, what are you waiting for? They really are of the highest quality, and the location of this new one is an excellent place to start, before going for a few drinks after your meal. LUVELY BUBBLY?

Wake up to these fabulous cruises

By Vanessa Vee I´M always yapping on about cruising, but it is most definitely my favourite type of holiday. I love the fact that I can wake up in a different destination every day, coupled with 5-star service and so many onboard activities available. Of course, it all depends on which ship, and which area you choose, but that’s why cruising appeals to so many because there are endless options. I am so lucky to have sampled the majority, from the small, 150-passenger cruises, to the huge liners, carrying in excess of 5,000 travellers. All companies have their pros and cons and, of course, it is finding the right cruise to suit your needs. As we all know, one man’s pleasure could be another one’s poison! Cruising in years gone by was always seen as very formal, and something only the very rich could do. But now, with new companies setting sail, there are so many different options that there really is a cruise to suit all. I dreaded my first cruise, at the same time as being excited, but I was convinced I was going to get bored. I am a really active person and constantly on the go. The word relaxation isn’t even in my vocabulary! But I am sure it’s obvious this was not the case then. In fact, it was only a week-long cruise - and I still didn’t have time to

explore that ship. Norwegian Cruise Lines (NLC) is a relatively allnew, singing and dancing company, most definitely aimed at the younger end of the market, including families. It’s called “Freestyle” cruising, which basically means you do as you please. They will have suggested formal evenings, but if you don´t wish to wear a suit, tie or jacket, then it’s not a problem. Also, there are no set dining times, so you eat when and where you wish because their ships have many restaurants from which to choose, though some are supplemented. Companies such as Cunard still tend to be at the higher end of the market, although the class segregation is not appreciated by all. For example, you cannot visit certain sections of the vessel unless you are booked in under a particular class. Princess, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Azamara are all up there as extremely popular cruise companies as well. The main British cruise companies tend to be Thomson, P&O and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, and there are many, many others. Here in Tenerife, despite many of the above being regular visitors to Santa Cruz, embarkation is not possible - and this year we are even more restricted with our choices. Over the last few years, we have had Thomson, Fred. Olsen and MSC, but the latter decided to withdraw this year. Upon receiving this news, Fred. Olsen Cruise

Lines took it upon themselves to include some extra cruises in their winter programme. They offer durations from five nights, as well as Southampton to Tenerife, Newcastle to Tenerife, Tenerife to Newcastle, Tenerife to Tilbury and Tilbury to Tenerife. It’s also worth noting that the UK/Teneriferelated sailings offer a 90kg luggage allowance per person. What a great way to get your Christmas goodies over here! There’s also a variety of cruises, from six to 14 nights, offering destinations such as Cape Verde, Madeira, Morocco - and even a cruise from Tenerife to the Caribbean! This coming week, Tenerife will welcome Kate Wooldridge, International Sales Manager for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, who is hosting the following specialised events: *Wednesday 26th, from 3pm at Paddy´s Lounge, Los Gigantes *Thursday 27th, 1pm in The Soul Lodge, Pueblo Canario, Las Americas, followed by Manhattens Bar, CC Passerella, in Los Cristianos *Today (Friday), 3pm at The Island Spirit, San Blas, Golf del Sur Kate will be giving an informative talk on this specific cruise company, as well as offering an insight into the fabulous itineraries they offer, followed by a questionand-answer session and drinks and nibbles. All events are FREE. But to receive your special-offers voucher, all attendees must pre-book their places on 922 751 867 (ext 1) or email info@ tenerifesunshine.com

By Carl from Robot

IT may appear that I am going over old ground again, but it seems that some of you are getting all confused about your hair products.

As I was doing my weekly shop, I saw two women deliberating over a star buy - a bargain not to be missed! It was a hair shampoo on offer for ONE EURO! Yes, a whole litre of shampoo for the amazing price of a euro. Fantastic, you might think, but in their trolley was a bottle of washingup liquid that cost over five euros for less than a litre. So where am I going with this? The liquid bought to wash dirty dishes cost more than the shampoo, yet didn’t these women think their hair was worth more than a washing-up liquid? I go over product use with my clients so they can understand the options. But I cannot and do not force anyone to buy salon products. One thing’s for sure, though: a bottle of shampoo that’s cheaper than dish-washing liquid isn’t going to do your hair any favours. Many famous brands use unnatural products, such as silicone, which is used to thicken the shampoo and condi-

tioner because the product may consist of up to 90% water. The silicone will make you hair feel smooth and shiny, but this is a false feeling as you aren’t feeling your hair but the chemicals in these products. Constant use will leave a slimy coating on your hair that can take weeks to remove. Look for words like sodium salt to me and you. Yes, you’re actually rubbing salt into your hair. This is also a thickener to a product that is waterbased and contains hardly anything beneficial to your hair. All the major brands use these chemicals, and just because it has a famous name doesn’t make it a good product. Your salon products

will cost you more, but they do what they say on the bottle - that’s for sure. They are far more concentrated and will last for months if used correctly. After one single wash, you will see and feel a difference. But a natural one - not a fake shine or a false smoothness but genuine products that are sold exclusively in salons for a reason. They must be prescribed by your stylist to suit your hair’s needs and not just grabbed off a shelf in your local store. So it’s up to you. Do you treat your hair with care and respect, or do you carry on with the bubble-bath – sorry, supermarket brands? I can only give a genuine opinion, but your hair and your purse will surely thank you for it.

By Monica Dyson When my mother was a young wife and mother there was really no such thing as consciously keeping fit.

She was far too busy to think about going to a gym or aerobic classes, or taking part in marathons or doing Zumba, if there had been such things then. Her fitness routines involved housework without the help of labour saving devices, shopping daily which involved visiting a number of different local shops without the help of a car, and taking my sister and myself to school. Come to think of it, she didn’t diet either, but she stayed slim. It was all about feeding a family as cheap-

21st August - 27th August 2015

Fit and we know it

ly and as nourishing as possible after the austerity of the war years, and she probably gave herself less food rather than see her family go without because that’s what mothers do! Women born certainly up to the 1940s had a relatively restricted degree of options for sport and physical recreation. However, there were opportunities in some areas for women to escape the humdrum of everyday life, build friendships, have fun and embrace health and wellbeing. At least that what Prunella Slack, head of the ‘Women’s League of Health and Beauty’ had them believe, although I’m not entirely sure to how many working class women it applied. Prunella was a British fitness pioneer, taking over from her mother Mary who had founded the organisation in 1931. The slogan was ‘Movement is Life’ and in 1930 it would cost

just two and sixpence per class. The uniform was a sleeveless blouse and satin knickers. The League was the most innocuous of the inter-war fitness movements with much of the choreography representative of the era which embraced synchronised mass formation movement. They held their first show in the Albert Hall in 1931 with a relatively modest number of participants but by 1936, there were 5,000 women performing at Olympia in London. Mary believed in deportment and would have her pupils walking with bowls on their heads to teach the correct way to walk and to encourage spinal flexibility. Prunella carried on the good work after her mother’s death, becoming also something of a human rights activist and taking a multi-racial team to perform at the Coronation celebrations in 1953. Her organisation sur-

vives to this day but is now called ‘The Fitness League’ which is a fitting tribute to a lady who remained active until her death at the age of 96 years. Many of my generation will be familiar with the fitness guru, Eileen Fowler whose catchwords ‘Down with a bounce and with a bounce, come up’ were heard every morning on BBC Radios first keep fit programme. At its peak in 1954 she had half a million listeners. She spent most of her life trying to make the flabby fit, although it could have seemed a tad sexist as she said that ‘Women should start getting fit by standing properly at the sink, whilst men should learn how to get up from their armchairs properly!’ In 1956 she launched the ‘Keep Fit Association’ before moving to television where she appeared for many years with a line-up of glowing ‘gels’ who all had EF emblazoned

on their chests! Her exercises were quite low impact and called things like ‘stretchaway’, ‘skipalong’ and ‘swingtime’ Again she practised what she preached and remained very fit until her death at the age of 93. Diana Moran aka ‘The Green Goddess’ signified the start of the more glamorous fitness expert. Appearing on British television during the 1980s, she was a source of inspiration to many women especially when she survived breast cancer and carried on keeping fit. Today well into her seventies she works as a writer and broadcaster. ‘Mr Motivator’ Derek Evans leapt onto our breakfast television screens in the 1990s resplendent in Spandex shorts. He left our screens in 2000 to pursue a career in music and really that was the end of fitness experts on television. After that we were

bombarded by advertising for fitness dvds, seemingly by everyone who was anyone, or thought they were, many of them ‘stars’ of reality shows like ‘Geordie Shore’ ‘Made in Chelsea’ and ‘The Only Way is Essex’ There is even a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ fitness dvd. Eliminating the expense of gym membership, not to mention the embarrassment of exposing your body to the outside world, fitness dvds promise a quick fix for the body beautiful, although two of its devotees Natalie Cassidy and Claire Richards have weight that goes up and down with the seasons. The Queen of them all, Davina McCall, goes from strength to strength promising fitness for just seven minutes a day viewing. Personally I think life’s too short! Opening my eyes each morning is often my contribution to exercise!

Cost-conscious Lions MEMBERS of Santiago del Teide Lions Club, who pledge to help local people, are holding a BBQ and Chill-Out at the local Sporting Centre - and they’re not after your money! The event takes place on 7th September at 4.30pm, with musical entertainment by pianist Julia. The cost is 8.50 euros

per ticket, or just go along for a drink and find out what the Lions are up to. The Club stresses: “This is not a fundraising event and, for once, we don’t want your money!” Tickets are available at Santiago Sporting Centre and the Lions Store, or from Steve, in Las Rosas & El Marques Resales.

men is allowed to land just 5kg. The police operation began when the Canary Islands’ Fisheries Service requested GRUMA help over alleged illegal squid-fishing in San Andrés dock, in the northeast. During surveillance, the officers found two ships unloading several buckets containing squid. After checking the fishermen’s licences, both up to date, they weighed the catch, which turned out to be way over the 5kg allowance. The seized squid, far from being dumped,

was donated to the Casa Cuna orphanage in Santa Cruz. In 2014, GRUMA carried out a total of 395 checks into the control of threatened species, inspection of nurseries and pet shops and other tasks for the conservation of the environment and natural resources. They also collaborated in the fight against marine pollution and illegal dumping, as well as surveillance and protection of flora and fauna of the archipelago, getting involved in the control of endangered species.

Gone are the days of tacky leather dresses that looked like something from a Seventies’ Swedish film. Here comes pleather - a synthetic leather made from plastic, which is more wearable. Used as an entire piece, or to highlight a section of a top or dress, pleather looks just as good as the real thing when featured in the right way. Okay, it doesn’t “breathe” like real leather, but nowadays its backing feels even better against your skin, creating anything from figure-hugging to flowing. So there’s no need to fork out the euros on real leather when this can and does look amazing when worn in the right way. But unless you want to look like Miss Kardashian, don’t go the whole hog and wear it top to toe. Pick out items that just have the sleeves pleathered, or maybe the collar on a top. Just don’t overdo what is supposed to be a classy

but edgy look. Keep it simple. If you are going for a jacket, make sure you also have the bag to match. It doesn’t have to be black, either, because grey looks just as good, as does camel. As long as you go for basic cuts to your clothing, the pleather should accentuate them rather than overtake them. It goes without saying that this winter’s pleather should be teamed up with ankle boots, rather than a shoe, to carry off this heavier fashion statement. If you are unsure of how to pull off this look, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s going to look fake. Even to the touch, pleather really is undetectable from leather. In all the big shops, there is everything from plain and simple to quilted and even embossed, so there is a choice for everyone. Next time you are on a fashion spree, give this autumn/winter’s key fabric a try … it’s an expensive look for very few euros!

Hi-tech helmet is a stroke of genius

By Val Sainsbury A NEW hi-tech “helmet” could save the lives of stroke patients because it reduces diagnosis time dramatically to just 10 minutes, so treatment to reduce brain damage can begin much earlier. The device, which looks like a space-age cycling helmet, covering the upper part of the head, above the eyes. is now being tested in two clinical trials involving more than 500 people at Sweden’s Sahlgrenska University Hospital. And, according to a report by the NHS National Institute for Health Research, there are plans for the helmet to be introduced to the National Health Service later this year. They could be used in

ambulances by paramedics, which means the appropriate drug treatment could begin before the patient arrives at hospital - without the need for time-consuming scans. The helmet, which uses microwave technology, can distinguish between the two types of stroke: those caused by a clot and those caused by a bleed. The difference is significant because the treatment varies. Stroke is the third-

most-common cause of death in the UK, and the leading cause of neurological disability because the reduction of blood supply and oxygen causes irreparable brain damage. Some 85% of strokes are caused by a clot that obstructs blood flow, known as ischaemic stroke. The remainder are haemorrhagic, caused by bleeds in the brain as a result of a weakened artery or vein-bursting. Around one in four peo-

ple who has a stroke dies as a result, and those who survive are often left with long-term problems such as slurred speech or memory lapses. During the initial stage of a stroke, some two million brain cells die every minute, so the faster the oxygen supply can be restored, the more brain can be saved. For ischaemic stroke, the main treatment is thrombolytic or clotbusting drugs. These can clear the blockage, restoring oxygen and blood-flow to the brain. As a result, the type of stroke a patient is having needs to be determined very quickly. Currently, this involves a CT or MRI scan in hospital, which can take hours and means a loss of precious time. The helmet device was developed by Medfield

Diagnostics, a spin-off from Chalmers University, Sweden, and emits microwaves that go through the brain tissue, where they scatter. The way signals break up is detected by a control unit, which processes them and produces a graphic which illustrates visually whether the stroke is caused by a clot or a bleed. Dr Richard Perry, a consultant neurologist at University College Hospital, London, said: “The early results are encouraging, but they were based on small numbers. So we would need to collect more data before the device could be used to guide clinical decision.” And he cautions: “Although it may be used in the NHS this year, its use would not be routine. Meanwhile, rehabilitation exercises after a

stroke may work better if they’re performed using a special mirror. As many as 75% of stroke victims experience movement problems in the arm on the side corresponding to the part of the brain which is affected. The idea behind mirror therapy is that patients watch their stronger arm and its reflection while doing the exercise. This tricks the brain into believing there are two working limbs, and helps reactivate some movement in the damaged arm. A trial at Taipei Medical University Hospital in Taiwan is testing the approach with 60 stroke patients. Some will also wear an electronic glove to provide random electrical stimulation, which also boosts nerves and triggers movement.

Free after-sales service

By Sue McDonald IF you live elsewhere and have bought a property in Tenerife, whether for your own use or as part of a rental programme, there are various things that need to happen once the purchase has taken place. For example, if you are buying a brand new property, you will need to think of a full inventory, right down to the last kitchen

implement, bathroom fitting and light. If you have bought a pre-owned property, chances are that you will want to change at least some of the existing items. The furniture there may not be to your style or taste, but even if it is, you will probably want to buy new mattresses, for example at the very least. You may also need a builder to make smaller or large changes and improvements, and again, how do you know who is reputable and will complete the work to the right standard - and on time and within budget?

The problem gets worse, of course, when your property-buying trip is short, and you need to go back home. How do you organise everything from thousands of miles away, and make sure that the end result is what you are looking for?

Add into this mix the language problem, and the fact that if you buy items from different suppliers, there will be multiple delivery dates, and the whole issue can become a bit of a nightmare! The answer, of course, is that you could ap-

point an interior designer to project manage, and to be the keyholder and oversee the works. But that could be expensive, particularly as you need someone who is very familiar with Tenerife, speaks the language, and knows

where to go for everything, has the facilities to store your stuff and can co-ordinate delivery and fitting when appropriate. There are a few simple rules to follow, many of them commonsense. Much like when you bought the property, use a reputable estate agent, and always take legal advice to check out your purchase. Find a well-established, trustworthy interior decoration business to help you with the “after-sales” items such as building works, furniture, electrics, kitchen and linen items, etc. A good indication of this can be that someone has a landline and not just a mobile phone. Ask opinions from other property owners where you now own, or from people who live here. Appoint someone who speaks the language, is able to oversee and co-ordinate any works in the property, who can help with inventory, help you design the look that you want, order furniture and fittings, store everything on your behalf and, , coordinate and organise delivery and fitting.

Motoring

By Emma at Motorworld

WHEN you take a car for an ITV, the kilometres are recorded and placed on record. This involves not only the station storing it on a computer but also including it on the paperwork given to the owner/driver at the end of the test.

It means there is a permanent record of the car’s actual mileage reading, held in the official testing stations. This information is also passed on to Tráfico and on the newer Permiso de Circulación. A current ITV also states the mileage reading at the last ITV, recording the date and distance declared at the testing station. I bring this to your

21st August - 27th August 2015

Speedo readings can be so vital...

attention so that you can ask to see the permission de circulación when you are considering buying a secondhand car. You can then compare the reading and date of the ITV and mileage with that currently shown on the car. It is highly unlikely that the mileage will be the same because, no doubt, the owner will have at least driven his/ her car home, or to the garage where it is being sold. However, should the ITV have been in, let’s say, April 2015 and recorded as 63,012 kilometres and you compare this with the current speedo reading, which shows, say, 500-600 kilometres more, you do not have a problem as this would be perfectly normal. If, however, the Permission de Circulation showed the last ITV test as taking place in Janu-

ary 2015, with a reading of 59,888 and you compare it with the current speedo reading of, for example 55,988, then alarm bells should start ringing. Of course, there could be a simple explanation for this as the speedo may have been changed through a fault and a second-hand one purchased with lower mileage displayed. But there are some unscrupulous individuals and, indeed, garages around who would think nothing of turning back

the reading in order to make a sale - and in the hope that the person buying was ignorant of the new rules. If this should happen, my advice would be not to buy the car, or at least ask to see the relevant paperwork confirming the change of the speedo – checking, of course, that the registration numbers tie up to the car you are interested in. If this is a genuine case, the person/dealer will have no problems in assisting you by show-

ing you such papers. If he refuses, saying there was no factura or giving other excuses, walk away from the car, no matter how much you like it. What do you do if this has happened to you and you’ve just discovered it? The obvious thing is, firstly, to visit the person/garage from whom you bought the car and ask for an explanation. If you are not satisfied with the explanation, or none is given, you are within your rights to ask

for your money back, or tell the person that you will be denouncing him to the police as this could, potentially, be a case of fraud. If he refuses your request for a refund, then you can denounce him. However, not only will you have lost your money but the police will be obliged to impound the car as evidence until the case comes to trial. And as most people know, the legal process over here is extremely slow and can take years. So you find yourself not only without a car but out of pocket, too. Please be careful and vigilant when buying a second-hand car, and always buy from a reputable dealer - highly recommended by others if possible. Never feel pressurised into buying something you don’t really want because you may live to regret it.

By Roscoe THE new football season begins in Spain this weekend - and for CD Tenerife fans there is genuine optimism. The pre-season has been excellent, the squad looks balanced and it’s an open-looking league.

There is no Real Betisstyle big fish in the second division pond this season, even though it will take a good team to finish above Almeria. They need a league of their own as they are always too good for the second tier but not strong enough for La Liga. Elche have the starting X1 to walk this league, but they could still lose a few players before the transfer window shuts. and they have crippling debts. We have seen before what a debilitating effect that can have on seasoned pros. The other relegated side, Cordoba, could be anything. Their new boss is former Tenerife manager Jose Luis Oltra, who has been promoted from this league three times in the last six seasons. They have sold 18 players and brought in 16, so your guess is as good as mine as to how they will gel. The signing of former Tenerife goalie Razak Brimah could be the key. He has improved hand over fist during the last 18 months and is now first-choice for Ghana. Of those who missed out last season, Valladolid have bought well, and this week they signed Javi Moyano for 50,000 euros. The Tenerife rightback had clearly been tapped up, and Alfonso Serrano, Director of Football, said as much in a press conference. “It does not seem normal to me for a player, and club captain, in the week that we start a new league to suddenly ask to leave,” he

Tenerife look for fast start

pointed out. “For years we had no offers for Moyano and then, suddenly, this. I wish him luck, but we move on.” Moyano cried at the press conference, but they may have been tears of joy as internet whispers were that he has doubled his money at Valladolid. Serrano added: “This summer, we had bids for our other captains Vitolo and Suso, but they said that wanted to stay and play for the shirt.” Exactly. Girona had double promotion heartbreak last season and that will take some getting over. They have also lost a few players and could be there for the taking, especially early on. Ponferradina had a stellar season and have made some shrewd signings. They will be strong. The rest of the sides are much of a muchness. Leganes, Alcorcon and Alaves have made some big changes, while Lugo look to have done some fine business. Which brings me to Tenerife.

This week, two more players came in. Tomas Martinez will be well known to anyone who plays football Manager! He is a “Number 10” who is highly thought of in South America. His loan deal is a genuine coup and, provided he stays fit, is quite a signing. The deal to bring in veteran Cristian Garcia raised a few eyebrows. But 24 hours later, when Moyano was sold, the deal to sign the Sabadell defender made more sense. Tenerife have a good balance of experience and youth - pace and aggression, with more than a sprinkling of local talent. I’m not saying we are going up, but we look as strong as anyone on paper. And don’t forget the man on the bench. I was against the decision to bring in manager Raul Agne, but credit where it’s due. He has done little wrong so far, and his hard-line stance is going down a bomb. Tenerife have an easylooking start and that is often vital in Span-

ish football. Not many sides fly from the bottom to the top, but I believe a play-off spot is achievable. As for the new sides, it’s great to have Real Oviedo back. They are a genuine sleeping giant and have already sold over 15,000 season tickets. They will surprise a few, as will Nastic. They have added to a fine team with some headline signings. Sergio Tejera, Gal Arael and, amazingly, Achille Emana have joined. Emana was a fabulous player in his prime. I remember when the Cameroon international was playing for Real Betis and he destroyed Tenerife one afternoon. Pace, power and precision. Recent seasons have seen him playing in some outposts for mega money. But at 33, he is ready for one last run at serious football. Nastic are captained by former Tenerife skipper Manolo Martinez. For relegation, I feel Athletic Bilbao’s kids have it all to do. A few

will shine, but even Barcelona’s best youngsters found it tough last season. They will go down with Huesca, Mirandes and, maybe, Albacete. I also think Osasuna could be in deep trouble again. Tenerife start where they finished - at Numancia on Sunday night. The last game finished 3-3! This weekend also sees La Palma side Mensajero make their long-awaited third-tier return. They have a home Sunday lunchtime battle with Rayo Majadahonda. The Madrid-based side also return to this level after a long absence. Mensajero will be on the mainland every other weekend in group 2, which is made up of sides close to the capital. The travelling will put the club under considerable financial strain. They will play Real Madrid Castilla, and can expect a bumper crown when the likes of wonderkid Martin Odegaard turns up with manager Zinedine Zidane.

The third tier is split into four groups, and its geographical makeup ensures it is very lopsided. Group 4 has five or six big teams who would expect to be playing a league higher, namely Real Murcia, Cadiz, Jaen, Recreativo, Merida and Cartagena. Or Tenerife B, as they should be known. Cartagena will start at home to Linares with five former CDT players. This week, Juanlu Hens and Cristo Martin inked to join Ayoze Placeres, Alvaro and Quique Rivero in a side managed by Victor Fernandez! And the local leagues also begin on Saturday. In the fourth tier of the Spanish pyramid Group 12 is the Canarian section, which should be a really tight division. Tenerife’s B team will do better, and it’s nice to see Las Palmas B back in after relegation! Lanzarote have kept most of last season’s squad, and CD Marino will hope for better days after a horrific final few months of the last campaign.

A top trebles’ turn-out! APART from the John Lowe team handicap competition, last Friday saw the last of our knockout events as three venues hosted the trebles tournament, enjoying an excellent turn-out of almost 70 players.

So a big slap on the back to all of those involved - it’s these sort of evenings that make this dart league what it is. At Palms Pool Bar, 10 Division 1 teams lined up to do battle, and a very strong lineup saw the first of the favourites crash out as Gaffers’ Tom, Telf and Neil beat Phoenix lads Bubbles, Johnny and Steve. But that was it for the Gaffers gang, who were knocked out in the second round by eventual finalists Mitch, London and Steve, also from the Phoenix. The other half of the draw saw an all-Boothen quarter final, pitching Joe, Jim and John against Sam, George and Steve, the latter team cruising through

that match and, indeed, all the way to the final after they taking out the other Gaffers team in the semis. I have to say, from what I saw, the standard of darts on the night was excellent, which bodes well for some cracking matches on finals’ night. Over at Sandys Bar in Los Cristianos, the Division 2 event got under way and one of the favourites, Rob, Alan and Duncan from Spear Chuckers, quickly booked their place in the final, beating the home venue’s trio of Paddy, Lee and Tam in the semi-final. And in that final, they were joined by Phoenix Flights boys Topgun, Arny and Pod, who made their way through the bottom half of the draw, beating Marilyns and Picassos teams in the process. Lastly, and by no

means least, the Waterfall kindly hosted the eight teams who entered the ladies draw. Now, we know the ladies really enjoy their darts, and they certainly take it seriously, so a big thank you to Lynn for keeping them all in check! In the bottom half of the draw, an early upset came about as Nauta’s

Julie, Sue and Debs were knocked out by Sheena, Beatrice and Jo, of Pas O Nadas. Maybe an injustice on my part, though, as the same trio went all the way through to the final, beating the Palms Pool Bar girls on the way. Joining them in the final will be the Gaffers trio of Betty, Con-

Giants stride to the top IT has been a frantic start to the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League, with a few suspensions and quite a lot of injuries. Some managers are on the ball and are swapping squads and teams about; some are missing out and fielding weaker teams. This league is all about being on the ball (excuse the pun)! After a great victory against Southampton, Everton have led the way in terms of players making the point-scor-

ing team of the week. They contributed three players; Norwich who also had a good win got two in, as did Manchester City after their win against Chelsea. The rest of the players came from West Brom, Crystal Palace, Swansea and Leicester. If you had Lukaku, then well done as he was the highest point-scorer with 13 - even better if he were captain. It’s still very much early doors, but moving to the top of the table were Jacqui’s Giants, man-

aged by Jacqui Obeirne. They came in with a strong 66 points, giving her an overall tally of 126, with four of her players - Joe Hart, Seamus Coleman, Vincent Kompany and Lukaku - all scoring double figures, Jacqui’s Giants weren’t team of the week, though. That honour went to the Chuckle Brothers, managed by Gavin Harris, with a huge 72 points. All his players returned good totals, but he had Vincent Kompany as

captain, and he was good for 22 points with Ross Barkley securing him a further 11. It’s a brave man, though, who has a defender as a captain! Spare a thought this week for Oasis Fm’s very own Adi Benson, who has had a nightmare opening two games. He originally picked Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois as his goalkeeper, and he promptly got sent off in the first game of the season. He substituted him in the week for West Ham’s

keeper, Adrián, who scored well the opening weekend but then (yes you’ve guessed it) he

was sent off last weekend. Man Utd fans look away now, as he now has Sergio Romero...

Gaffers maintain the perfect start THE Direct Telecom Pool League is just three weeks into the new season and, of course, it is far too early to try to work out who will finish where.

But a few teams who fancied doing well have struggled in the opening encounters, and it looks as though Division One will be extremely strong this season. Defending champions Gaffers A, who went through last season unbeaten, look early favourites. They have picked up where they left off with three wins from three. They travelled to Silencio on Tuesday to take on Exiles A, and it’s never an easy place to visit. So it proved because over the first six frames, there was nothing to separate the teams. Gaffers then took the next two frames to get their noses in front and never looked back, Exiles picking up just one more frame. Dreamers A have made an unusually fast start to the season and currently occupy second spot. They had an away fixture against Gaffers B, who are proving they deserved their promotion from the Second Division. The away team took

the first frame, but Gaffers then won four in a row. Fortunately, Dreamers didn’t panic and took the next three e to level the score at 4-4 going into the final session. Ben took first blood for the home team, but Mark A and Steve put Dreamers 6-5 up and on the verge of victory. However, Harry had other ideas and held his nerve to beat Tommy, levelling the scores for a share of the points. Palms B, who are looking strong, picked up another win at home on Tuesday night, against Terrace Bar Roosters, who are missing captain Fin. They are playing with a patchedtogether team, but take nothing away from the Palms because they are playing good pool and many teams will struggle against them. Once they opened up a lead, they were never going to be caught and finished convincing winners. In a contrasting fixture, Terrace Bar Bantams hosted Palms A on Amarilla Golf. The visitors were licking their wounds after an 11-1 mauling the week before and came into the game pumped up and wanting a win. However, they quickly found themselves 4-0 down. Chris then put a frame on the board for them, and it quickly became three after the home team gifted

them the next two, with Marky P jawing a straight-forward black and Sparky giving away two shots on the black after a poor shot. It was now game-on, but it was to be one of those nights for the Palms. The Terrace boys have been playing well and were due one. And after Mal beat JT in back-to-back games to guarantee the draw, they had the confidence to win the remaining frames for an impressive victory. Down in Los Abrigos, expectations had been high before the season started for the two Phoenix Bar teams. But three games in and there isn’t a lot for either team to cheer about. Phoenix Potters played host to Treehouse A, who have title hopes this year, It was a very close match and, with the teams well-matched, a draw looked likely as neither team could open up a lead. But Treehouse dug deep and managed to get the extra frame they needed for a close victory. Rewind A welcomed The Phoenix down to Puerto Colon, and the visitors made the better start, quickly taking a 3-1 lead. Wilf then stopped the rot with a fine seven-ball clearance. and Rewind had their tails up as Danny then won to level the scores,

Bubbles took the next frame, only for John to take his, leaving it 4-4 and nicely poised. John then recorded back-toback victories, only for Bubbles to win again. And at 5-5, it was getting tense. Danny took a frame for the home team, his third of the night on his debut, which left Steve needing a win against Wilf to get a Phoenix draw. But he just couldn’t find a way past and Wilf wrapped up the frame and the win! It was derby night in the final game of Tuesday, with Hammers A playing Hammers C. The ‘home’ team, and last season’s runnersup, have been a little out of sorts so far. They had to fight for a win in week one and scraped a draw last week. So they wanted to put in a good performance here, but didn’t start well as captain Paul lost the opener. However, they fought back and took the next five games, but Hammers C refused to roll over. They won the next frame as Paul lost again, but Craig beat Tony to ensure a draw. And when Wez and then Penguin were beaten the draw looked definitely on. But Tony fluffed his lines against Barry and Craig beat Ken to give the game a more respectable look for the Hammers A. But again they were made to work hard! In Division Two, it was an early top-table clash between Bluebell B and Treehouse B, with both teams going into the fixture unbeaten. A few early frames were traded, but Treehouse showed again how far they have come since last season by playing some wonderful pool. Bluebell tried to keep pace with them, but it just wasn’t to be and

Treehouse won to open up a slight lead at the top. Dreamers B are another team who look much improved from last season as they played host to Hoppys Bar. Both teams have now played a couple of seasons in the league and know what it takes to win frames. And in the early frames there was nothing to separate them. It looked more and more likely that the

game would end in a draw but the home team broke through and just edged in front to wrap up the win and take the points. In El Medano, Sabores hosted the lads from The Crown who had been practising all afternoon. With a few scoops as well! And that practice paid off as the visitors scooped a comfortable 9-3 victory to start their season in style.

Big Two hunting for the answers By Adi Benson

TWO weeks in and it’s already shaping up to be a great season. One or two clubs have invested wisely and look as if they are closing the gap on their rivals. One or two still look a little short in positions, so it could be an exciting end to the transfer window, I’m looking at you, Van Gaal and Mourinho!

Man Utd v Newcastle Two games in and United have six points and haven’t conceded. Yet they have appeared to be struggling at times. Rooney looks disinterested and unfit, and they are relying on him for goals. For me, they still need a centre-back and a new striker but is there any money left in the coffers? Steve McClaren is another manager with his work cut out. He has been allowed to spend money, and a couple of his signings look good, but Newcastle haven’t gelled yet. They don’t look confident at the back and this is costing them in games. They need a positive result. Last season: 3-1 Prediction: Home win

Leicester v Spurs The Foxes are certainly the in-form team, picking up from where they left off last season. Ranieri has resisted the temptation to tinker and has a good, solid squad, all playing well together. Caution should be exercised, though, because they started last season well … and went backwards. Spurs could be in for a real shock this season if they don’t pull their fingers out in the transfer window. The squad is wafer-thin and, should Harry Kane pick up a serious injury, they appear to have no one capable of replacing his goals. Last season: 1-2 Prediction: Draw

Crystal Palace v Aston Villa Palace, who have the makings of a top-half-of-the-table team, were unlucky against Arsenal after putting up a decent second-half fight. Home form will be key to how well they do. If they can get a good run of form going at Selhurst, it will go a long way to helping them achieve their ambitions. Villa started the season with a win and will have classed themselves unlucky against a poor United side. But with Benteke gone, goals look like a problem. Somebody needs to step up to the plate or Villa will find themselves the wrong end of the table again. Last season: 0-1 Prediction: Draw

Norwich v Stoke It was a great performance last week from the Canaries, and they need to maintain the momentum. They showed real team spirit, which is what they need if they are to stay up. They have some decent-looking attacking players, but defence will be key and they need to start keeping clean sheets. Stoke did not have the greatest of starts, with a defeat at Liverpool. But they showed good mental strength to come from two goals down to draw with Spurs. If they can score first in games, I think they will then be difficult to break down and, with with their fair players, they will be okay. Last season: N/A Prediction: Away win

West Ham v Bournemouth

They looked good in their first game, but it all fell apart in their second. It’s all very good and well beating the top teams but you have to beat the teams who are expected to finish below you and they didn’t manage that. They may be looking forward to this game but I think they are in for a shock. The Cherries have shown real fight in their opening fixtures, unfortunately it hasn’t yet yielded any points but they don’t look like the sort of team whose heads drop. This game is a great opportunity to get their season up and running. Last season: N/A Prediction: Away win

West Brom v Chelsea West Brom still look as though they are on the beach. A big performance is needed - and needed quickly! They struggled against City and only just matched Watford, and this fixture is another difficult one. They are the home team, so the emphasis will be on them to attack. But they need their defence to be at their best for this to work. Chelsea come into this game a wounded animal, but that can go against you. Their midfield on Sunday looked very lightweight and they were sluggish in defence, Ivanovic looks out of sorts and the substitution of John Terry spoke volumes. Are the cracks starting to appear? Last season: 3-0 Prediction: Away win

Watford v Southampton Watford will be confident about this game after watching E v e r t o n dismantle the Saints defence. They are unbeaten in two but are still looking for their first win, they are a difficult team to play against at home and they will be looking for an early goal. If they can get that, they will try to shut up shop. The Saints have their work cut out and I’m not sure anybody saw last weekend’s result coming. In the last two seasons they have been strong in defence, but I suppose everybody is allowed an off-day. The key will be how they respond to defeat. Last season: N/A Prediction: Away win

Everton v Man City I have often criticised Roberto Martinez, but he got it right last weekend against a defensively-tight Southampton team. This is going to be much more of a task for his team. The key will be stopping City scoring an early goal, but that is easier said than done. I expect Lukaku to be upfront alone as he packs his midfield to try to soak up the City attack. City will look for an early goal and, with Aguero, they have a striker that even the best defenders can’t handle. He almost beat Chelsea single-handedly and was a constant menace. We are about to see how good John Stones really is! Last season: 1-1 Prediction: Away win

Arsenal v Liverpool Much has been said about Arsenal being genuine title candidates again. People thought Petr Cech was the missing piece of the jigsaw, but in their opening two games they have failed to impress. Yes, they beat Palace and yes, Giroud scored a wonder goal. But they still looked vulnerable at times, and for me they still need a world-class striker. Liverpool have played two and won two, but not very convincingly. This is a huge test and will give a good indication as to how far the team still have to go. A big loss could be a huge setback. Last season: 4-1 Prediction: Home win

Sunderland v Swansea I didn’t think it possible for Sunderland to turn into a bigger car crash, but it has happened. Will we see another early management change? They have invested in defence, but it looks as frail as ever and, at this rate, they could be relegated by Christmas. They need to keep a clean sheet to improve confidence levels. From what I have seen so far, I think Swansea fans can start dreaming of a topsix finish. They look a very assured team and Jonjo Shelvey looks a more mature player, impressive in the first two games. Keep this up and Europe may be back on the agenda. Last season: 0-0 Prediction: Away win
