NO MORE DRILLING

4th September - 10th September 2015

Inside this week...

AT last, the Canary Islands’ oil-drilling dispute is finally over, and tens of thousands of protesters have every reason to celebrate Repsol’s insistence that its pursuit of oil or gas in the waters near Lanzarote and Fuerteventura has been abandoned. For good. Continued on page 3

Oil’s well that ends well as drilling finishes. Forever! Continued from front. Eight months after the multi-national company said it was quitting the project, spokesman Marcos Fraga reaffirmed its position, saying in a press conference: “We will not delve into that area, so we will let the permits still in force for a second exploratory drilling in these waters expire.” The expiry date is March 2016 and the defining statement is a bitter blow to the Spanish Government, which had hoped to provide new sources of fuel for a country that still imports 80% of its energy. Disappointed Enrique Hernández Bento, Spain’s deputy Industry Minister, said in late July that the matter had been settled and permits granted by his Industry Minister boss José Manuel Soria, would run out next year. In any case, Repsol spokesman Fraga stressed: “We will not conduct another survey in this area.” Furious Environment groups, who last year sunk their teeth into what they saw was an outrage, counted for nothing in the end, although their demonstrations, and those of up to 200,000 Canaries’ residents, went a long way way to proving there was serious animosity towards the proposed drilling.

And in July, Canarian Government President Fernando Clavijo, said the controversy “is already settled”. Spain’s pro-drilling Industry Minister, the Canarian born José Manuel Soria, agreed, but said it was a closed issue, simply because no other oil company showed interest in finding oil or gas in the Canary Islands. It puts the lid down firmly on the enormous controversy, created by Repsol when it first announced its intention to start drilling offshore as long ago as 2001. Politicians and experts warned of the devastating effects that potential oil spills could have on the Islands economy, and how they would also be harmful to the rich wildlife inhabiting the area. Yet the multinational company was anxious to develop what might have been the country’s biggest oilfield. The company believed the fields could have contained as much as 2.2bn barrels of oil, which is why it invested 7.5bn euros to explore the two sites, about 40 miles east of

Fuerteventura. Had its estimates been correct, the wells might well have produced around 110,000 barrels a day for 10 years, equivalent to 10% of oil needs for Spain, which has never had a wealth of natural resources and imports some 99% of its oil. Drilling in the area had been held up for more than a decade by environmental challenges and delays by successive governments, but Repsol was allowed to carry out its plan to begin work before the end of 2014. And despite the huge opposition from protesters, Spain’s biggest oil company offered cast-iron guarantees that the work would be carried out safely, and with respect for the environment. It even set up an 80m-euro contingency fund for compensation in the event of accidents. But it failed to convince the then Canary Islands President Rivero, who had opposed the scheme bitterly. “When we look at the development of Argentina or Mexico or Nigeria, we see that the local people don’t benefit much from oil,” he said. “Furthermore, the oil here is in very deep water, which in-

creases the risks hugely, as we saw with the environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.” But the Spanish Government, which said it could not ignore the possibility of finding oil, issued licences for conventional exploration as well as fracking. And Industry Minister Soria, also responsible for Energy and Tourism, added: “Spain cannot afford the luxury of not finding out whether we have hydrocarbons.” At a conference under the slogan “Reindustrialise to win”,

Soria said: “We spend 100 million euros a day on the gas and oil our industry needs. We all want our industry to be more competitive, and for that to happen we need cheaper energy.” Rivero, who led a sustained campaign against the drilling, conceded that there was a conflict between what the Canaries want and the Spanish national interest. “As President of the Canaries, my first responsibility is to protect the Canaries’ interests,” he said. “There’s no benefit for us. It presents risks to tourism, the environment, fishing, agriculture and t o

the desalination of seawater. “When we weigh up what we have to gain and what we stand to lose, we don’t gain anything. Repsol is the one who profits from this.” Rivero’s principal argument was, oil-spill risks aside, that the oil would eventually be exhausted, whereas tourism gave the islands a sustainable economic base. The tourist industry, which attracts more that 12 million people to the Islands annually is worth 13bn euros a year. Another issue was and still is - unemployment, then running at 33% in the Canaries and nearly 10% above the Spanish national average. But Rivero was unconvinced that the oil business would make much of a dent on the jobless total. “Repsol says it may create 3,000 jobs,” he said. “But in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura alone, more than 50,000 people work in tourism - and in the Canaries it’s more than 400,000.” Rivero added: “We in the Canaries do not accept being treated like a colony, like something from another century when the Europeans pillaged Africa’s resources. “Repsol thinks everything has a price, but they’re not going to buy the Canaries. We may lose a battle but we’ll win the war.” In fact, despite a mighty battle, there never was a war. The lack of oil saw to that!

The new water plan accepted THE Tenerife Cooperation Plan for 2014-2019, managed by the Cabildo in collaboration with the municipalities, has given the green light for a major new project.

Cash pours in as the cameras roll

THE film industry has injected more than 100 million euros to the Islands’ economy in 20 projects in recent years according to official data.

This has generated wealth and created

new jobs in areas which didn’t exist a few years ago. In the next few days, shooting will begin in Santa Cruz on the fifth instalment of the blockbuster Bourne saga, in addition to others which have been filmed in the archipelago. The Canaries are attractive to film-makers because the low tax,

Transport device hits the buffers... THE beginning of the new, contactless ticketing system on Tenerife’s public transport system has been put back until December.

The pilot phase-in on buses and trams was scheduled to start in October, but Manuel Ortega, insular director of Mobility, said the delay was because disabled, blind and deaf travellers might have trouble using the device as it stands. Specifically, the machines will be redesigned to make them fully accessible to these users. And there could be a key reconfiguration: the installation of screens and new, at-site oral information. The National Or-

ganisation of the Blind of Spain (ONCE) is backing the changes. Ortega said: “This delay will actually be a good thing because we are going to allow that, from the outset, the network is adapted to people with mobility disabilities and sensory.” The new system replaces the existing magnetic stripe bonds by a more sophisticated card with a chip. As soon as it is implanted, it will be necessary only to bring it within 10 centimetres of a reader; then a green light will come on and make a noise. The passenger and the trip will be validated without - in the case of the buses - providing further indications to the driver; thus, speeding up the process.

all-round sunshine and cheaper labour makes filming such good value for money. The Canary Islands Special Zone (ZEC), allows for film activities, along with radio and television productions, with a corporate tax of just 4%. And this figure will drop for 20152020. Paulino Rivero, former Canary Islands President, has been instrumental in bringing this new revenue to the islands. “Right now, it is the most successful instrument, the low-tax attraction, and the islands are 20 points lower than

most of our competitors,” said Rivero. “Also, the natural conditions of the archipelago are especially favourable for film shoots, offering 3,000 hours of sunlight per year, plus good communications with the continents, quality of services and infrastructure, and legal security.” Rivero recalled that a few months ago, he personally liased with the American film industry and met representatives of the main producers of Hollywood. It seems as though this is just the start of an exciting beginning for the islands.

Son starves mom to death

POLICE who found the body of a woman, weighing just 25kg and starved to death, have detained her son.

The 39-year-old, identified by police as José Ramón LA, faces charges of homicide through neglect after the body was discovered at his Tenerife home. Health workers were appalled to discover the state of the wom-

an, Ana Delia AM, when emergency services were called to the home after her death was reported. A team from Cecoes 112 (a Canarian emergency and security centre) found the woman curled up in a foetal position with visible signs of neglect, including ulcers all over her body from lying in the same position for long periods, and obvious starvation. The woman lived with her son and his wife, who is also in police custody.

La Orotava will shortly see the construction of a large new reservoir for drinking water, and this project aims to ensure the supply control at all times. These facilities will have the latest technology in management systems. The reservoir, to be built on a 3,000sq/m plot, will have an 8,000cu/m capacity and will be equipped with

remote sensors, machined valves, chlorination systems, level sensors and other state-ofthe-art technologies. Councillor Felipe David Benitez, in charge of the project, said of the infrastructure: “It will not only store a large volume of water to give greater peace of mind, but it will be connected to existing deposits distributed to the different urban centres, with the objective that the supply need never be interrupted.” La Orotava Mayor Francisco Linares appreciates the new system, saying: “This will enable us to ensure, for many years, the supply of the precious liquid, with greater control and added security.”

Retailers cashing in IT has been a fine summer for the retail sector in the Canary Islands, and the latest figures reflect the welcome news.

The Canaries posted the second-best regional rises in July, compared with the same month last year up another 5.7% and surpassed only by those of Cantabria (6.6%), according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). In the whole of Spain, retail sales at con-

stant prices - eliminating inflation - saw a rise of 4.2% annually last month. By type of product, food sales rose 1.5%; personal equipment, 5%; household equipment 8.1%, and “other goods”, 2.3%. In the classification by type of establishment, the big chain stores increased their sales by 5.6% compared with July 2014. And all regions increased their sales compared with the matching period last year, but Melilla (1.1%), Asturias (1.2%) and Navarra (2.4%) posted the smallest increases.

Costa Magallanes is born! GRANADILLA de Abona has long coveted the tourism trade and this week it strengthened its identity by launching Costa Magallanes.

The name commemorates the famous Portuguese navigator who,

in 1519, landed at El Medano. The new name covers 16 kilometres of coastline and the builtup area. The new moniker will be unveiled officially at the next edition of the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) by Tourism Councillor Maria Luz Fernandez. “We are creating a tourism product that encom-

passes a wide range of actions, including culture, education, sports, history, etc,” she said. “The aim is to give unity to that agenda. “We do not have a largescale hotel, but we have a lot of quality tourism and, while we do not want to become a place with a massive presence of visitors, it is true that in El Medano we have

Killer fireworks’ huge explosion A massive explosion at a Zaragoza fireworks manufacturer on Monday left at least six people dead and six injured, three of them seriously.

Two of the victims were confirmed as being female, but identification of the others was not been made at the time because of the state of the bodies. Around 20 people were working at the site when the incident occurred, and the cause is not yet known. The explosion occurred at around 2.15pm at the Pirotécnica Zaragozana company in Garrapinillos, on the outskirts of Zaragoza. It was heard in the city centre, say local firefighting department sources. Firefighters, police

and paramedics were deployed at the scene, and the injured were taken to various city’s hospitals. Emergency services were still trying three hours later to put out the fire caused by the blast, which tore down part of the building. A mammoth plume of smoke emanating from the site could still be seen for miles around. Pirotécnica Zaragozana, founded in 1860, is

one of the most important companies in the sector. Its 12-hectare site manufactures fireworks, sold in countries such as the UK, Germany, Denmark, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Canada, according to its website. The company suffered similar accidents, in 1973 and 1984. Five people died during the first one.

opened our arms to tourism. “However, we have managed to keep the ‘feel’ of a fishing village. And this will continue in the future. “ Ms Fernandez is clear that what tourists are looking for when they arrive in El Medano “We have a large number of elite athletes who windsurf, so tend to sleep at 10pm and get up at six

in the morning to catch waves,” she said. “And then there are the families who know they can enjoy a beer on the beach while their children play on the square. “We have a network of stunning trails and a wide range of rural hotels, so the people who usually come, visit again. We have a very high repetition rate, so our work

must continue to be aimed at retaining customers. That is one of the keys.” The official presentation of Costa Magallanes will be staged at the next edition of Fitur, considered the most important European tourism fair. It will be held in Madrid between 20th and 24th January 2016.

Schools to reopen ...and teachers are the dark again

JUST a few days remain until schools reopen in the Archipelago - Infant and Primary levels will resume on 9th September. But more than 400 teachers still do not know where they will be employed. Spain’s Ministry of Education has not, at the time of writing, published the mandatory appointments. As explained by the union Anpe, there is a “relatively common” problem in the Islands, to the point that many schools and colleges are forced to start the course every year without some teachers. In addition, the union says it is managing more than 50 cases, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, of teachers who have been given an incorrect placement for their subject matter. “Many professionals have yet to be told if they have to go to another island,” says Pedro Crespo, President of Canarian Anpe. “This is unacceptable. It entails displacement

and finding accommodation, and we fear that they will have to find it one or two days before school starts.” But Crespo insists that the regional Department “has not yet appointed the teachers who will replace retirements, or those teachers who will be away at the start of the new term for whatever reason”. Crespo also admits he is also to keen to see a reduction of class sizes. The Education Ministry had promised that from January 2016, Primary sizes will go from 30 to 25 students per class; Secondary, 36 to 30; and in high school, from 42 to 35. “Canarias always has the maximum ratios and is also the third autonomous community where teachers are assigned more students, almost to the point above the national average,” Crespo raged. “We need to reduce the workload of teachers. If we had more teachers and teaching loads are reduced, we can develop more educational projects in schools.”

GARACHICO’S marina and fishing port is completely full for the first time since its May 2012 opening, with all 180 berths taken by boats and yachts. Some 20% of the installation is reserved for transit traffic. But such has been the demand for berths in re-

cent months that this percentage has been halved. The Mayor of Garachico, Jose Heriberto Gonzalez, says that though this is good news, there is no data to indicate that the local economy has actually improved by the port’s increased usage.

Don’t blame these bulls! THE total of bullrelated fatalities this summer rose to 12 on Sunday when a man in his sixties was gored to death.

It happened during local fiestas in the town of Cuéllar, in Segovia, and signalled the highest number of casualties for 15 years. The bullring surgeon confirmed that a bull ran its horn through the heart of a resident in the Basque municipality of Rentería, identified only as JMRB. Following a tradition in many Spanish towns, local authorities allowed the bulls scheduled to be fought in the ring that day to run for a few minutes along a predefined street route. But even local officials admitted that the spot known unofficially as “the funnel” - where the unfortunate JMRB met an untimely end - was “very dangerous”. A poster displayed in the town by the Cuéllar Bull Run Association, pointed out: “At this spot, there are only demarcation fences, but no protection fences.

The bull run is a complicated one, with a lot of people on horseback and others on foot, including quite a few children.” The goring occurred at the spot where the bulls move from the country into the town proper. “Despite the danger there, you routinely see older people and children who are not physically prepared,” said the Association. This year’s death toll has fuelled ongoing demands by animal rights groups to end all bullrelated events at local fiestas, where the animals are sometimes submitted to practices such as having fire-

crackers attached to their horns, or being pushed into the sea for a few minutes. Silvia Barquero, head of political party PACMA, which lobbies against cruelty to animals, said a few weeks ago: “We have been condemning these festivities for years, because they involve an implicit violence that endangers people and animals.” Her statement came right after Civil Guard officers shot a bull in the middle of the street in Coria (Cáceres), after considering the run was becoming too dangerous. Although new leftist governments opposed

to bullfighting have taken office across Spain following the May municipal elections, their disapproval often does not extend to bull-related events at local festivities. Last year, there were 15,848 street events involving bulls, which released by Culture Ministry figures. This 15% rise has been supported chiefly by the conservative Popular Party (PP) in the Valencia region. But the new leftist regional administration, which has emerged in the wake of the May elections, has expressed no desire to curtail bull fests, citing their great popularity.

Dad is 30th to drown Garachico port full up in Canaries this year A FAMILY holiday in Fuerteventura ended in tragedy within two days when a father-of-two was swept out to sea to his death in front of his horrified fiancee.

Bodybuilder Carl Lee Thompson, 36, was the 30th person to drown in the Canary Islands this year. He went for a swim with his partner, Sally Barrett, her 16-year-old brother and his two young sons during a week-long trip to

the Corralejo resort, on the north coast. But the red danger flags which had been flying the previous day had been replaced by yellow ones, and they were all dragged out to sea rapidly by the current. Locals said it had been so strong in the days prior to the accident that people were knocked off their feet when knee-deep in water. Ms Barrett battled her way back into the shore to raise the alarm, and lifeguards rescued the three youngsters in trouble But Mr Thompson,

who was pulled out unconscious, was declared dead soon afterwards. Witnesses later posted accounts of the tragedy on a local Fuerteventura website, one writing: “Seems ironic that the warning flags were yellow today rather than the red ones that have been in place for the last week or so. “There have been a number of rip currents on that beach this last week - please take great care if you are in the water. The rips have been sweeping people off their feet when they are at less than knee depth of water.”

There has been a history of complaints about beach safety in the area, where tides are said to be strong enough to carry swimmers to Africa. Neighbours said Mr Thompson had been wearing his arm in a sling for a period before the holiday following a work injury. Family friend Cassey Bell, 28, said: “Carl and Sally were really happy. He loved his boys - he was devoted to them and loved going off travelling with them.” The Bradford inquest was opened and adjourned until 10th December.

Police in the frame as gag-law fine dropped AN 800-euro fine, imposed on a woman said to have contravened the “gag law” by posting a picture on Facebook of an illegally-parked police car, has been scrapped.

The editor says...

Little litter solution THERE really is no excuse for littering. In Tenerife, millions of euros are spent every year keeping the streets clean and, while it may be hard to educate some of our visitors, we can play our part in keeping our Island clean. On-the-spot fines are in place if you get caught by Officer Dibble, and there are plenty of trash receptacles on our streets. I’m sure you don’t throw litter on your own balcony or inside your apartment, so why do it on your own pavement? I’m all for new ideas, and I love the one Hubbub has introduced in

London. The Enviromental group has installed a host of special cigarette-butt containers outside Tube stations and various landmarks. The idea, as you will see, is that they dispose of the butt responsibly, but with a wacky question. It’s brilliant! And there is no reason why we cannot do the same thing here. All we need to do is make it more relevant. So how about ... do you prefer red or white wine? Lounge by the pool or beach fun? And for the really mischievous, Canarian Independence or Spanish Nationality?

Spanish officials admitted the image did not contravene the controversial security law, even though the police said they were rushing to apprehend

“gag law”, which came into force on 1st July, forbids unauthorised use of police images for security reasons, with fines ranging between 600-30,000 euros. But a spokesman said: “It had nothing to do with the Citizens Security Law. It was just a picture of a vehicle that was published.” The law has been criticised by Amnesty International and other rights groups, as well as by associations representing lawyers and

journalists, some saying it harks back to the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. Drawn up by Spain’s ruling conservative Popular Party Government, the law also sets hefty fines for protests outside parliament and other strategic properties, including nuclear power plants. Critics have accused the Spanish Government of trying to curtail the right to free assembly, and to muzzle protests at a time of high unemployment.

Spanish police swoop on ‘blood-diamond’ suspect AN AmericanBelgian businessman, accused of enslavement and pillaging “blood diamonds” during Sierra Leone’s civil war, has been arrested by Spanish police at Malaga airport.

Michael Desaedeleer’s capture was hailed by Geneva-based legal-aid group Civitas Maxima, a “landmark”. That’s because it is the first time an individual has been detained on international charges related to the exploitation of the Sierra Leone war to market blood diamonds. Mr Desaedeleer, who agreed to be handed over to the Belgian authorities seeking his arrest, faced a National Court judge last Friday and was detained provisionally. Civitas Maxim Director Alain Werner told Reuters: “The case will help to raise awareness of the pivotal role played by financial people in the trade of mineral resources that fuel armed conflicts in Af-

vandals in a nearby park They quickly filed a complaint against the woman, citing the new law. But the central government’s Alicante representative shelved the complaint, wiping out the fine. rica and elsewhere.” The legal-aid group, which documents crimes and assists those who suffered during the Sierra Leone conflict, as well as other warcrime victims, said Mr Desaedeleer’s arrest was prompted by a 2011 complaint, filed in Belgium by several people from the west African nation. It details Mr Desaedeleer’s alleged crimes in Sierra Leone’s eastern district of Kono between 1999 and 2001. There, the Revolutionary United Front rebel

group enslaved civilians in diamond pits, delivering the proceeds to Liberia’s then-president Charles Taylor, said Civitas Maxima. Tens of thousands of people died as a result of the 1991-2002 civil war in Sierra Leone, and the subsequent Belgian investigation led to a European arrest warrant being issued against Mr Desaedeleer earlier this year. The UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone condemned Mr Taylor to 50 years’ imprisonment in May 2012 for

supporting the rebels in exchange for diamonds. Ibrahim Tommy, Executive Director of the Centre for Accountability and Rule of Law in Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, told Associated Press that the case against Mr Desaedeleer could shed new light on the blood diamond trade. “This is another significant step forward in our collective efforts at ensuring accountability for the crimes that occurred during the conflict in Sierra Leone,” he said.

Kosovo and Serbia finally on the level

IN a landmark step towards a normal relationship, Kosovo and Serbia have signed a series of agreements in key areas.

Tokyo logo No Go!... THE logo for the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan is expected to be scrapped because rival designers are claiming plagiarism.

The organisers had given their backing to designer Kenjiro Sano previously. But NHK, Japan’s national broadcaster, to withdraw the logo because it believes Mr Sano took an image from someone else’s website without permission. Shinzo Abe, Japan’s Prime Minister, has become involved in the row, telling journalists that the organising committee is making “an appropriate decision” and insisting the Olympics must be an event celebrated by everyone. Angry Tokyo governor Yoichi Masuzoe said: “I want Mr Sano to provide an explanation. I feel like we have been betrayed.” The logo scandal is a further embarrassment for the country, which cancelled the initial design of the main stadium for the Games following a public row over soaring costs. The delay means the new stadium will not be ready in time for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, as promised initially, and organisers and builders will face a tough task meeting the revised deadline, set by the International Olym-

pic Committee of January 2020. Sano has heard the plagiarism accusations since the logo was launched in July, and the latest rumour surfaced late on Monday. It was alleged that the designer had taken a photo from another website to use in his own presentation of the Olympic logo. He is said to have altered part of a photo depicting a Tokyo airport lobby, replacing images of banners hanging from the ceiling with those of his Olympic logo. In footage shown by NHK, details in the two photos, including people on the floor and the size of the banners, were, apparently, identical. A Belgian designer took legal action earlier, claiming Sano’s design was similar to one created for a theatre in Belgium. He has denied that allegation but still faces other claims over past designs. The Japanese designer subsequently acknowledged eight of the 30 designs used for a brewery’s promotional tote bags included copies of works created by others. But he blamed assistants in that case and apologised for the oversight, saying they had “traced” the images. Sano also faces allegations that his design for a zoo in central Japan, and another for a public museum outside Tokyo, resemble other designers’ work closely.

Serbs in northern Kosovo will enjoy greater rights through one of the deals, while Kosovo gains its own international dialling code in another. Federica Mogherini, the EU’s foreign policy chief who mediated, called the agreements “landmark achievements”. Kosovo split from Serbia in 2008, a decade on since a conflict between Serb forces and Kosovan Albanian rebels. A Nato bombing campaign against Belgrade effectively forced Serbia to cede the state,

but it has not officially recognised Kosovo. Both sides aspire to join the EU, which, for Serbia, depends on implementing a 2013 EU-brokered agreement on normalising ties with its southern neighbour. Serb Prime Minister Alexander Vucic made a highly-symbolic visit to Serb-majority areas of Kosovo in January. Under the April 2013 Brussels Agreement, Serbia did not recognise Kosovo’s independence. But officials agreed to cooperate in ways that would allow it to operate more like a sovereign state. Progress since then has been patchy, with elections playing a part. For several months last year, Kosovo did not have a government, and the Albanian nationalist opposition opposed

any compromises with Serbia. Finally, though, talks have regained their momentum and both sides say they have got what they wanted from the latest deal. Hashim Thaci, Kosovo’s Foreign Minister, claimed it was a de facto recognition of independence. Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said it ensured representation for ethnic-Serbs in Kosovo. It should also mean Serbia can now move forward with its negotiations to join the EU. “This is a big achievement for the whole of Serbia and it means there are no longer any obstacles, nothing stands on Serbia’s way towards Europe,” said Vucic, while Thaci was quoted as saying that Serbia had “in a way,

recognised Kosovo as an independent state”. Kosovo has a majority Albanian population, but, under the agreement, 10 areas with large Serb populations will be able to manage issues such as the local economy and education. Vucic said the Community of Serb Municipalities would have an assembly, president and a flag. The deal will also put an end to the inconvenience for Kosovo’s mobile phone owners of using Monaco or Slovenia international codes. Serbian-majority areas in the north will still be able to use Serbian calling codes. The two sides also agreed on how to share the symbolic Mitrovica Bridge that separates Albanian and Serb communities in the north.

High-speed killer wasps strike the wrong chord ORGANISERS were last week forced to cancel a music concert in Bilbao following the discovery of a huge nest of Asian predatory wasps.

None of the precautions being taken lately to combat these “killer wasps” - so-called because of the speed with which they can devour a bee - are proving sufficient to check their rapid spread across northern Spain. The species entered the country in 2004, and since then, it has proved to be impossible to halt the growth. Together with the tiger mosquito, responsible this summer for a man in the Valencia region becoming the first recorded patient to contract the chikungunya virus in Spain, the invaders are of increasing concern to experts. That’s because they have the ability to occupy territory at a speed which, apparently,

makes them impossible to stop. “These two species are non-indigenous invaders, which means they do not belong to our fauna and have been introduced by man,” says Eduardo Galante, a professor of zoology at the University of Alicante. It is thought that the wasps might have arrived in a container transporting ceramics from China to France. Scientists also suspect that the tiger mosquito arrived in Spain through imported merchandise. Their ability to adapt did the rest. “Climate change is having an effect on the expansion of these species,” said Prof Galante, who is also President of the Spanish Association of Entomology. “Given that temperatures are higher, there are species surviving in places where they weren’t able to live before. This is what may have happened with the tiger mosquito, which is now living along much of the Spanish coast. “They can get as far as the centre of the penin-

sula, which is drier and colder, but they first have to make it through very dry and arid areas.” The Asian wasp, Vespa velutina, has spread from France into the Basque Country, part of Cantabria and Portugal. It doesn’t transmit any diseases, but beekeepers are particularly concerned about its spread, given its ability to annihilate native bees. The wasps wait outside beehives, causing the bees to stay inside. As soon as they leave the hive, the wasps catch them in flight and devour them. Given the lack of food this causes, the queen bee stops laying eggs, and “the bees end up dying” without any replacements to guarantee their survival, says Julian Urkiola, former President of the beekeepers’ association in coastal Gipuzkoa, the smallest province in Spain. “There are still bees, but they die in winter. The EU has to start helping with research. There are a number of laboratories working on

the problem here, but there is no effective result.” The nests, first found on the coast, have now moved into many inland areas, such as Bizkaia, parts of Álava and the Cantabrian coast. And beekeepers are having to move hives to altitudes above 1,000 metres to avoid attacks. Some of the wasps’ nests can measure up to a metre across and, says Urkiola: “They are getting bigger all the time and their voracity is astonishing.” In Gipuzkoa, around 300 nests have already been destroyed, while in Bizkaia, two are dealt with every day. Last year, a total of 773 were removed in Gipuzkoa alone, and the figures seem likely to hit record levels this year. As for the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), high temperatures this summer are thought to have contributed to its spread. According to Prof Galante, this species is now here to stay and, he adds: “We are just going to have to live with them.”

Sun or no sun, they’re tanned beyond belief MOST Spaniards just love their red-hot summers, but it’s simply not enough for some sun-seekers, who turn to specialist salons to keep their tans topped up throughout the year.

Now, though, they are being warned about the health risks associated with tanning beds and salons, with one dermatologist warning that the nation is becoming addicted to tanning. The Spanish capital receives an average of 2,749 hours of sunshine per year, according to the country’s weather agency, which is double the total received by London. Yet some tanning salon customers, like 36-year-old dancer Jose Manuel Rodriguez, says he comes to the salon up to three times a week “in order not to lose my natural tan”. Jose Carlos Moreno, of Spain’s academy of dermatology, (AEDV), believes this need to be tanned is an addiction. “These people never feel they are tanned enough,” he said, before comparing them to “an-

orexics who always feel are too fat”. Their profile: mainly women and people under the age of 40 - based on study participants - who tan more than two times a week to the point of obtaining an excessively orange or chocolatey skin tone. Tanning salons emerged in the Eighties in the US, where researchers have been talking about tanning addictions - dubbed “tanorexia” - since the 2000s. The symptoms are similar to those of heroin addiction, according to Joel Hillhouse, a professor of public health at East Tennessee State University, who has studied the psychology of tanning. They include a desire to tan on waking, a need for increasingly bigger “doses”, feelings of anxiety when not tanning and annoyance when friends and family comment on their excessive tanning, he said. Some people continue to using tanning beds, even though they have skin cancer, said a shocked Professor. “We even had a few that were willing to admit to us that they had done things like steal money to do indoor tanning. They would actu-

ally take their roommate’s or their parents’ money.” 4 The World Health Organisation has, since 2012, classified UVemitting tanning devices as carcinogenic to humans. In 2009, Brazil became the first country ever to ban indoor tanning beds, followed by Australia in 2014. Australia has the highest rate of melanoma in the world, with 11,000 cases per year. Melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, is highly-linked to sun exposure. According to Vanessa Rock, who chairs the National Skin Cancer Committee in Australia, studies have shown that sunbeds increase melanoma risk by 20%, regardless of age at first use. But skin cancer rates have stabilised among those under the age of 45, thanks to “” education campaigns and greater awareness”, said Rock. But 3,600 cases of melanoma are still diagnosed in Spain each year. Prof Hillhouse recommends setting up support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous to try to substitute tanning with relaxing activities, such as yoga.

Legal-high strain for baffled NHS staff STAFF with the NHS often find it more difficult to administer treatment to people who have swallowed legal highs than patients on drugs such as cocaine.

Concerned paramedics have witnessed a huge rise in call-outs to legal-high emergencies, which is putting an “unacceptable” strain on the NHS. West Midlands Ambulance Service, for example, has seen cases triple during this summer, but officials suspect the true figure is even higher. And even though some “legal” highs are banned, they are still responsible for emergency calls. Paramedic Cameron McVittie told Sky News: “There are many calls where we are told it might be a legal high -

Join the big beach clean-up

they have tripled since April. But there are other calls we get where it says ‘unconscious’ or ‘chest pains’. But the actual reason is the same: it’s another bad reaction to a legal high. “With overdoses on cocaine, or people who have lost it on cannabis, I know pretty much what they will do. But legal highs are completely unpredictable ... it is absolutely more difficult!” There is an everchanging range of legal highs available in shops or online, containing

chemical ingredients, and many are marked “Not For Human Consumption”. Former legal high Black Mamba is now a banned substance, yet it is still responsible for many requests for help when people have been taken seriously ill. Even as Sky was filming with Mr McVittie, a 20-year-old man was picked up behaving bizarrely in a park near Birmingham city centre. He was unable to tell paramedics anything about who he was or what he had taken. But

on his arrival at City Hospital, the staff there recognised him immediately as a person who had been extremely violent in A&E the previous day, having taken a legal high. Mr McVittie said: “One minute you can treat a patient who is unconscious and you are managing an airway. And the next minute, he is up and trying to attack you. “It is unacceptable that we, or hospital staff when they get to hospital, have to put up with it.”

Animal rights activist is caught... for a duck

A SPANISH woman, defending one of the country’s most bizarre, festival traditions, laid into an animal rights activist … with a duck!

The man was filming the annual “Duck Chase” in the Catalonian seaside town of Rosas where, every August, the birds are thrown into the Mediterranean, then caught and brought back to the shore by swimmers. He was heard saying in a video of the incident, released by animal rights group Animal Rescue Espana: “Continue, continue, continue to abuse, I am filming you. A little bit of empathy for the animals. They also have a life, like your children or your family.”

The footage shows a young woman in a white swimsuit attack the man with a duck -- holding it by the legs and lashing him with it repeatedly. As the attack goes on, animal rights activists gathered on the shore can be heard chanting, “You would not do that to your dog”, before police removed them. Every year since 1918, about 50 ducks are thrown into the sea in the town, north of Barcelona, with swimmers racing in to catch them and bring them ashore, however they can. But after Sunday’s incident, the town’s mayor is considering whether to end the Duck Chase. Rosas’ Mayor Montse Mindan, interviewed by a local online news site, said: “I’ll be holding a referendum next year on what residents think; whether they

want to keep this festival - a tradition that will celebrate its centenary in two years.” Although the ducks are not killed, Animal Rescue Espana said they experienced “stress, internal haemorrhaging, pain, fear and suffering”. The group launched a petition on the Change. org website, demanding that Roses ban the Duck Chase, as well as bull runs. It has received over 10,000 signatures since its inception on 14th August. Spain has many controversial, animal-based traditions, often in honour of patron saints which, say, animal rights groups, are cruel. Bull runs, where people run ahead of a pack of half-ton fighting bulls, are a part of summer festivals across the country, the most

famous during Pamplona’s San Fermin feria. At least seven people have lost their lives at bull festivals since the beginning of July, including one man who was gored in the neck earlier this month after leaving a protected area to film a run on his mobile phone. Festivities at the annual San Antolin festival in the Basque coastal town of Lekeitio revolve around a contest in which young men battle to pull the head off a dead goose as it is dragged on a pulley across the harbour. Previously, a live goose was used. And residents in the northern village of Manganeses de la Polvorosa used to hurl a live goat from the top of their church tower to honour its patron saint. But the awful practice was banned in 1992.

A MAJOR ecological event will take place in Alcala, Guia de Isora, next Saturday (12th Sept), organised by diving school 12dive, and Bubbles, the air-filling station. It starts at 9.30am and the purpose is to create an awareness of the marine eco-system, and how important it is to protect our local environment. There will be representatives from ecological projects, an underwater beach clean-up, a barbecue and entertainment. All certified divers

with their own gear are invited to help the underwater clean-up. Non-divers can help with the beach cleanup as well because there will be a litter collection on the Alcala beach. And the more volunteers there are, the bigger the area they can tidy up. Bubbles will provide free air and 12dive will supply air cylinders in case the divers don’t have their own. If you are interested in participating, contact info@12dive.com or call 822 663 670.

Sorrow as panda twin fails to live

CELEBRATIONS for the arrival of twins, born to a giant panda in a Washington DC zoo turned to sorrow just five days later when one of the cubs died. The tiny tot showed no signs of decline until the fatal fifth morning, after spending the night with its mother, Mei Xiang (may-SHONG), while its twin stayed in an incubator, said Dr Donald Neiffer, chief veterinarian of the National Zoo. It was an arrangement set up to help the mum care for her twins. Zookeepers kept one twin with her at all times and the other in an incubator. They swapped the twins every three to four hours, or whenever Mei Xiang co-operated. “However, this morning, when our team went in to perform the swap again, we immediately noted that the little cub had not increased in weight, appeared weaker and was exhibiting possible respiratory issues,” said the vet. The panda team immediately gave the cub antibiotics, fluids and res-

piratory and nutritional support, said Neiffer. They saw some slight improvement, but the cub’s health deteriorated into the early afternoon, and, sadly, died at 2pm. The cub’s twin, the larger of the two, is still alive and with its mother. “It’s very robust and very strong, and is demonstrating all normal behaviours,” said the vet. “We’re all extremely happy with the surviving cub’s progress.” The 17-year-old Mei Xiang has given birth to six pandas, and the little cub is the third to die (one was a stillborn and the other died after six days from liver damage, probably because its lungs were underdeveloped. Her surviving offspring are Tai Shan (born in 2005), who now lives in China; Bao Bao (born in 2013), who lives at the National Zoo; and the living panda twin, which will be named after 100 days.

Dollar queen of the screen SHE earned a mighty $52 million (£33m) in the past year, which makes Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence the world’s highest-paid actress.

The star, who won her gong for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, topped up her film income by becoming the face of fashion company Dior. But Jennifer’s combined earnings was way below those of best-paid actor Robert Downey Jnr’s $81m (£51m), which topped the male stars’ list earlier this month. The 25-year-old made headlines last year when hacked Sony Pictures emails revealed that she earned a lower cut of profits from the American Hustle film than her male counterparts, who included Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale.

Forbes noted that only four women on this year’s highest-paid list - which takes into account earnings from films, TV, endorsements and other sources made more than $20m (£12m), while 21 male actors achieved that level. Lawrence towered above Scarlett Johansson, second on the actress list with an estimated $35.5m, and Spy star Melissa McCarthy,

with $23m. Actresses completing the Forbes’ top five list were China’s Fan Bingbing, who appeared in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and former Friends star Jennifer Aniston, who also earns money from promoting cosmetics and bottled water. Last year’s top-earning actress, Gravity star Sandra Bullock, saw her pay drop to $8m from $51m after a quiet 12 months.

Kanye West wing? AMERICAN rapper Kanye West, having collected MTV’s highest honour at the Video Music Awards after smoking something to “calm his nerves”. announced that he would run for President in 2020.

West, watched by his pregnant wife, Kim Kardashian, said in a rambling speech: “I still don’t understand awards shows. I don’t understand how they get five people who work their entire life, sold records, sold concert tickets, to stand on a red carpet, to come and, for the first time in their life, stand on the chopping block and be considered a loser. “I don’t understand it. I’m conflicted bro. I just want people to like me more but f*** that bro. “I will die for the art, for what I believe in - and the art ain’t always going to be polite. I bet they are thinking right now if I smoked something before this, and the answer is Yes. I rolled up a little something to take the edge off.” After holding his head in his hands for ages, he added: “It’s about ideas, people who believe in truth. And yes, as you

probably could have guessed, I have decided in 2020 to run for President.” West was reunited on stage with Taylor Swift, six years after he famously walked on stage at the 2009 VMAs and interrupted her speech to declare Beyonce a worthier winner of an award. Taylor, announcing West as winner of the Video Vanguard award, called him her friend and said: “I first met Kanye West at this show six years

ago, and since then we have a had lot of time to talk about a lot of things. “The whole world knew about our exchange at the VMAs, but most people don’t know his album College Dropout was the first album I bought on iTunes when I was 12.” West, in turn, admitted he had regrets about his stage invasion, telling the audience: “I think if I had to do it all again, what would I have done? “Would I have worn a leather shirt, would I have drunk half a bottle of Hennessy and given the other half to the audience? If I had a daughter, would I have gone on stage and grabbed the mic from someone else’s?” During the ceremony, host Miley Cyrus was verbally attacked by rapper Nicki Minaj. Af-

Nanny cleared of murder A MURDER charge levelled at an Irish nanny, accused of killing a one-year-old girl in her care, has been dropped by prosecutors.

The new development was announced by District Attorney Marian Ryan on Monday after a medical examiner reversed an earlier decision that Rehma Sabir’s death was a homicide. Aisling Brady McCarthy, 37, was charged with the girl’s death in 2013 after an initial

post-mortem examination indicated that she died of complications from blunt-force head injuries. Rehma’s death has now been classified as “undetermined” said Ms Ryan. The revised findings suggested that she might have had some type of undiagnosed disorder which made her prone to easy bleeding, with relatively minor trauma. “Based on an assessment of the present state of the evidence, including the amended ruling from the Medical Examiner who performed the autopsy, the

Commonwealth cannot meet its burden of proof,” said Ms Ryan in a statement. Ms McCarthy, of Co Cavan, had been living illegally in the US and was taking care of the girl at her family home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was employed by entrepreneur Sameer Sabir, the baby’s father, and his wife Nada Siddiqui, who is originally from Pakistan. The couple had moved from London to the US, and Ms McCarthy worked for them for six months until their baby’s death in January 2013.

Her defence lawyers claimed prosecutors did not have enough evidence to charge Ms McCarthy, and accused them of presenting “false and deceptive””information to a grand jury. She pleaded not guilty and was granted provisional release on bail and ordered to wear a GPS monitor in May after spending more than two years in jail. It was not immediately clear whether Ms McCarthy would be deported in light of the dropped charge. Her lawyers have not commented on the new developments.

ter taking the prize for best hip-hop video for her hit Anaconda, Minaj blasted Cyrus over an interview she gave to the New York Times last week. The 22-year-old singer had suggested in the interview that Minaj had reacted badly because Anaconda had not been nominated for video of the year. After collecting her award and while still on stage, she turned to Cyrus and said: “and now back to this b**** that had a lot to say about me a lot in the press. Miley, what’s good?” Cyrus replied: “We’re all in this industry. We all do interviews and we all know how they manipulate s***. Nicki, congratu-f******-lations.” Despite the apparent outburst, many watching the exchange live on MTV took to social media to suggest the confrontation was a staged publicity stunt. During the show, Cyrus delighted the audience at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theatre, changing outfits several times each time, appearing on stage wearing less than before. She also said she had released a new 23-song album - available for free online. Her website crashed shortly afterwards, but the songs were still available on streaming websites. Cyrus was hosting the VMAs two years after she stole the show with a risque, but memorable, performance with Robin Thicke, and a year after winning the top prize for Wrecking Ball. The 22-year-old surprised photographers backstage at the cer-

emony by passing round what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette. Grabbing the microphone, she said: “I’ve been doing this for a really long time, even though I’m not old. I’ve been doing this for a while, and because you’re all my friends and my song is sort of about the love of marijuana and the love of humankind, I’ve brought a blunt if anyone would like some.” 2015 MTV winners Video Vanguard Award: Kanye West Video of the Year: Taylor Swift ft Kendrick Lamar, Bad Blood Pop Video: Taylor Swift, Blank Space Hip-hop Video: Nicki Minaj, Anaconda. Spanish property climate looks sunny

Spanish property investors could be about to bask in the warmth of the best buying conditions they’ve had in some time.

Buyers are benefitting from a cheap Euro, some of the lowest Euribor mortgage rates in history, and remarkably low Spanish property prices. Timing is a crucial part of overseas investment, especially when exchange rate fluctuations are taken into account. Since March 2011, Sterling has appreciated by over 20% against the euro. This means that a 200,000 euros Spanish apartment on the market in 2011 would have cost a little less than £182,000. However, with the collapse of the euro, the same apartment now costs nearly £143,000. That significant £39,000 saving could go towards creating the home of your dreams. But let’s not forget

that there are other factors at play here. The Bank of Spain’s own data shows that variable rate mortgages have collapsed to a record low, thanks to the fall in Euribor rates, but the Spanish property market is making a comeback after the crash caused by the

global financial crisis. Spanish property prices nosedived by a staggering 41.6% after the 2007 crash, but last year the fall in house prices plateaued at around 3% – a vast improvement, according to the Tinsa IMIE General and Large Markets Index. A revival in tourism,

a charged economy experiencing strong domestic demand, and a potential employment recovery all suggest that Spain is returning to health. The Tinsa report suggests that Spanish property could even stop declining in the short-term, if the positive eco-

nomic conditions hold. The managing director of Winkworth Spain, Bernard Vent, has added his voice to those of the many other property experts who claim that Spain currently offers the best return on investment (ROI), both for house purchases or as a

vehicle for investment. “There are very few, if any, markets outside of Spain throughout Europe that offer an ROI this high,” he said. According to Tinsa, the Mediterranean coast region is where property prices fell the most; the value of a house there has almost halved (down 48.6%) since 2007. Above-national-average decreases were also noted in capitals and major cities (down 45.7%), and metropolitan areas (down 43.9%). When it comes to property, however, what goes down must come up. So if you’re thinking of making the move to Spain it may be a good idea to investigate your options now rather than later. Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, keep on top of the currency market. So do our MPs earn their corn? THE Canary Islands Parliament has published members’ declarations of assets, and the data of all MPs is available for all to see on their website.

In a move which would never happen in the UK, the full financial details of all elected members are there for all to see. This follows Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso’s publication of his financial details on a personal website earlier in the year. The total income declared by all parliamentarians in 2014 exceeded 2.3 million euros before tax, which includes income derived from

both public and private returns. By parliamentary groups, the sum of the income declared by the representatives of Coalition Canarias (CC) was 739,000 euros, followed by members of the Popular Party (CC), with more than 563,000; the PSOE, with 532,000, the Nueva Canarias (NC), with 212,000, the Podemos, 205,000; and, finally, the Socialist Grouping Gomera (ASG), with 102,000. Up to 38 members of the House have declared signing for bank loans, of which there are still almost five million euros outstanding. In 2014, Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo earned 42,000 euros net, and deputy Patricia Hernandez 35,887. Clavijo (CC) states

that last year he earned 42,000 euros and owns 50% of a home and 33% of a family commercial premises. He had a 28,000-euro balance in his accounts and had a loan, thought to be a mortgage, of 227,000 euros. Patricia Hernandez (PSOE) last year received 35,887 euros net as state deputy, owns two houses and a parking space. She had 4,200 euros in a bank account and two bank loans, totalling 358,052. In the PP, Australia Navarro declared 62,668 euros net, plus a widow’s pension of 19,099. He paid income tax of 41,200 euros, has a house (66%), a garage, a car, a 368-euro balance in bank accounts at the end of 2014, and a 29,326-euro loan.

Mountain Goats BBC1, 22.35

Jimmy accidentally becomes famous, which brings on a fevered campaign of freeloading irking Jules no end. The comedy about a ragtag gang of hapless Mountain Rescue Volunteers continues. Jimmy appears to save the day after he hits a walker with a golf ball and is hailed a hero by Ken, the teenager’s father. Bernie, Bill and Conor are chuffed to bits for their chum, but the green eyed monster in Jules is having none of it. Meanwhile, Conor and Bernie attempt to curb Jules’ brusque manner in order to attract more customers - though keeping a lid on her rudeness proves frustrating. Alex Norton guest stars as Ken alongside series regulars Jimmy Chisholm as Jimmy, Sharon Rooney as Jules, Kevin Mains as Conor, David Ireland as Bill and Kathryn Howden as Bernie. Mountain Goats was filmed on location in Glencoe and in front of an audience at BBC Scotland’s Pacific Quay studios.

Roy Hodgson’s side will look to maintain their 100 per cent record in Group E as they sit at the top of the group after coming from behind to beat Slovenia 3-2 in Ljubljana in June. Wayne Rooney scored an 85th minute winner in that game to mark his 48th international goal and he will hope to go one better in San Marino and equal Bobby Charlton’s alltime England tally. Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph will hope to continue their good form for England after joining their new club in the summer transfer window. The two sides met in a Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley in October when Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Andros Townsend and Phil Jagielka got on the scoresheet in a 5-0 victory. Meanwhile, 38-year-old Andy Selva is likely to lead the line for La Serenissima. With more than 60 caps and eight goals, he’s the leading scorer in the history of the team and will be hoping to add to his tally with what would be an historic goal against England.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover BBC1, 21.00

Lady Constance Chatterley (Holliday Grainger) enjoys a happy marriage to the dashing aristocrat Sir Clifford Chatterley (James Norton), until he is severely wounded serving in the First World War. Confined to a wheelchair and impotent, Clifford becomes more distant, and Constance finds comfort in the company of the estate’s brooding, lonely gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors (Richard Madden). In the England of the 1920s the social divide between the upper class and their servants was unbreakable: an affair between a lady and a working man would scandalise society and ostracise them both. Lady Chatterley must choose between propriety and love, while Mellors risks his safety, as they both strive to evade the growing suspicions of her jealous and vengeful husband.

Blitz Cities: London BBC1, 09.15 To mark the anniversary of the start of the Blitz: Shane Richie, David Harewood, Ricky Tomlinson, John Humphrys and Myleene Klass each visit their hometowns, and with the use of rarely seen target documents compiled by the Nazis, take to the sky to recreate the same bombing routes used by the German Luftwaffe. The celebrities then return to land, to look at aerial photography and film taken of their city immediately after it was bombed, and try to gain a better understanding of why their city was targeted. They will also meet with survivors of the Blitz, hear about how they were affected and talk about how they helped to rebuild the nation. Shane Richie tells how the Blitz began in earnest on the afternoon of 7 September 1940, when the German Luftwaffe filled the skies in the first major daytime raid on the capital. The night-time raids that followed were relentless: night after night, for nearly two months, the bombers returned, targeting major landmarks. In the end around one third of the City was laid to waste. A pilot takes Shane above London, and with the help of an aerial archaeologist they revisit the route which the German bombers would have taken, and explain how the River Thames was used by the enemy to navigate at night.

India: Nature’s Wonderland BBC2, 21.00

Every morning in winter the desert town of Khichan is invaded by thousands of Demoiselle Cranes, who are drawn there by the food the villagers provide. As a wildlife spectacle it’s hard to beat and Liz (pictured) can hardly believe the number of birds involved, nor the order with which they set about feeding. Wildlife expert Liz Bonnin, actor Freida Pinto and mountaineer Jon Gupta reveal the wonders of India’s natural world. Freida can’t resist visiting the mask makers, who make colourful animal masks to bring ancient tales to life, whilst mountaineer Jon is impressed at the sure-footedness of Tahr. These goats are the ultimate mountain dweller, able to deal with even the most precipitous slopes in their search for food. He also learns how even some of the mightiest mountains rely on one of their smallest inhabitants, the tiny Pika. Freida needs to ride on an elephant to get close to one of India’s rarest sights, the One Horned Rhino, and not only does she get to see one in the tall grass, she also sees its baby which is a vital sign for the future survival of this animal. She also meets the man who has spent 30 years planting his own rainforest in order to try and prevent the island he grew up on from being washed away. Liz travels to the mountains of the south, the Western Ghats, to see how locals are helping India’s most endangered macaque, the Lion Tailed Macaque, face up to the challenges of the modern world. Jon comes down from the mountains to a beach on the Bay of Bengal to witness the mass hatching of Olive Ridley Turtles. Over just a few nights more than a million baby turtles will erupt from nests buried in the sand here.

The Hairy Bikers are heading north on a big Baltic adventure - to lands where the winters are long, the days are short and the food is hearty! The Bikers travel on to the Baltic States. These countries are so close but we know little about them! Si and Dave want to change that - starting with Lithuania. They make a pilgrimage to the Hill of Crosses. A site bristling with crosses and historically under constant threat from the KGB, the hill has been a Lithuanian symbol of strength and resistance for over two centuries. In Latvia, the Bikers can’t resist the opportunity to ride with Latvia’s oldest biker gang, the Brothers of the Wind. They travel to Riga’s huge indoor market constructed from former Zeppelin sheds and taste some of the country’s most amazing produce. Estonia sees the Bikers going back to basics on the peaceful and beautiful island of Muhu.

In episode two Amanda travels to Vietnam, China and Japan to investigate whether the history of women in the East followed the same uneven trajectory as it did in the West, and exploring the rise of ‘separate spheres’ among early Confucian and Buddhist societies. Covering a period from the 1st century AD to the present day, Amanda looks at how Asian ideals of feminine virtue and the division of space between the female world of the home and male world of business and politics became a hallmark of Chinese identity. Part of yin and yang, they have cast a long shadow across women’s lives - not just in China, but across Asia. Amanda also confronts the difficult issue of female complicity, interrogating the extent to which women accepted or resisted the inferior status allotted to them under Confucianism. Some women refused to be defined by the limits placed on their sex: Vietnam’s Trung Sisters mounted the first armed rebellion against China; Empress Wu was the only woman to have ruled China in her own right, and Lady Murasaki Shikibu the world’s first novelist. Confining women to the home and other restrictive traditions created ideals of beauty which advocated immobility and artifice, a world away from low-status work and labour. While these ideals could lead to dynastic power and in some cases sexual freedom, they also culminated in one of the most troubling and least understood beauty rituals in women’s history: Chinese foot-binding, a painful legacy that would last right up to the 20th century.

Doctor Foster BBC1, 21.00 In episode one, we meet Gemma Foster (Suranne Jones), a woman seemingly in control: a trusted GP, the heart of her town, a woman people can trust. But Doctor Gemma Foster’s life is about to explode. Suspecting her husband of having an affair, Gemma throws herself into an investigation that will propel her, her family, and even some of her patients into chaos. Bit by bit, Doctor Foster uncovers secrets that shock her to the core. Now she has to choose how to react. One thing is certain - she is going to behave in ways she could never have imagined.

The Nick ITV1, 21.00

In this second episode officers are on the trail of a heroin-addicted conman who’s been targeting vulnerable people in their own homes, while other officers handle the aftermath of a serious stabbing, where a man nearly lost his life. They also have to deal with hundreds of naked cyclists who descend on the city as part of the annual influx of tourists. Quick actions by two police officers on patrol on a busy Saturday night save the life of one man. He’d just left a city night club when he was involved in an unprovoked attack which nearly killed him. The man was stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle, and was bleeding profusely from the wound when police arrived on the scene. Two officers held his neck while they waited for paramedics to take him to hospital. DS Julie Greenwood and her team lock down the scene to make a meticulous search of the area, looking for vital evidence. It’s likely the attacker has already left the city, so the officers make an urgent appeal for witnesses. The witness appeal brings a breakthrough in the hunt for the attacker. A witness comes forward to say he saw a man running away from the scene, and the man has been identified as someone who is known to the police, who lives in London. Julie contacts the Metropolitan Police to ask for assistance for four officers from Brighton to arrest the man. But when the squad arrive at the suspect’s home he’s not there. Julie believes he may have fled the country. Meanwhile, officers from Brighton Police station are on the trail of the city’s most wanted man: a con man preying on pensioners, pretending to be a council worker, but stealing their cash. There are 21 offences all linked to him including one elderly woman who lost £1,500 from her Post Office account when he conned his way into her home. An elderly grandmother tells how he claimed he’d come to install a new bath. He went to make checks, and after he’d gone she realised her money was missing. They officers know who he is, they just can’t pin him down. He’s a heroin addict who desperately needs money for his next fix. But each time the officers get reports of a sighting he manages to give them the slip. Even a stake out with covert officers fails to flush him out. The conman strikes again, but this time the pensioner challenges him and catches him on the CCTV in his home. Finally there’s a tip off that he’s hiding in a seafront hotel. This time he can’t get away from the officers who descend on the hotel.

Flockstars ITV1, 20.30

Hosted by Gabby Logan, ‘Flockstars’ sees eight famous faces paired up with their very own professional border collie to compete in a series of sheepdog trials testing skill, technique and discipline in a bid to win the coveted Flockstars’ shield. In the seventh episode, the search continues for a champion. Midge and Amanda and Skye and Lee have already seen off the competition in their semi-final clashes and booked themselves a place in the final. But with the remaining place still up for grabs, two of the runners up will be thrown a lifeline and given a second chance to prove their shepherding skills. Professional shepherds Ioan, Ed and Emma choose two Flockstars who have been eliminated from the competition, who they believe demonstrated hard work and talent in training, as well as a promising performance in the showground. Will it be Brendan, who developed impressive control over Hoggy and lost out despite a clean round, or Lesley, who surprised everyone with her authority over Gyp and her speed around the course? Or will they select Wendi who was pitch perfect commanding veteran sheepdog Bill only to come unstuck on the bridge? Or does Tony deserve a second chance having built a close bond with Bess, even though his shepherding skills were far from effective? Richard was an early favourite alongside his dog Jack, but will faltering in the semi-finals go against them? Is Kelle worthy of a reprieve, having overcome her fears to show moments with Max of real sheep herding promise? The tough decision is left in the professional shepherds’ capable hands. Who will they pick to face the testing obstacles including the Wooden Bridge, Topiary Corner and three passes of the dreaded Slalom? Whoever wins this challenge will bag themselves the much sought after wild card and a place in the final, to face the most difficult course to date, plus the superflock!

Built in 1956, the winery was modernised in 1983 but still holds the original oak barrels, nearly 200 years old, where the traditional red wine is left to ferment and mature. Ageold practices go hand in hand with modern-day technology. The winery accommodates all the grape harvesting requirements with its capacity to hold 160,000 litres.

Entertainment

4th September - 10th September 2015

By Jamie Droo NORMALLY on a Thursday the article on this page has already been proof-read twice and edited. but today is a special day because nominations for the Tenerife Entertainment Awards were announced live on Oasis Fm.

Every year, when this ceremony takes place, it sets the day up for around 40 entertainers over the various categories. It is a great feeling to be nominated for an award, especially in the entertainment field because showbiz is full of critics. Firstly, congratulations to all who have been nominated in their respective categories. Every single nominee is worthy of the nod, and in some categories it will be a tough call as to who will take away the “The Best” accolade. This year’s female singer category was no surprise, with practically the same line-up as 2014. But this time Helena Campbell, Hayley Butler and Lisa Bridge, who all performed in the live-vote event last year, are joined by Suzie Moore. Suzie was last year’s Best Newcomer, so I am certain she will be thrilled with her nomination in this category because she has been recognised as a top vocalist among some outstanding female singers on the Island. This would be a great one to win for Suzie as there are two previous winners in Hayley and Helena and also former nominee Lisa. This really will be a difficult decision, and this year will be so different to 2014 because this is now a public vote. It will be down to which artiste has built up the biggest fan base during her time here. That really goes for every category, apart from the live vote on the day. This year will see

37 CW

TEAs enriched with top Tenerife talent!

the solo performers take to the stage for the live vote and it should prove entertaining. And again the result is hard to call. David Hodgkinson, known on the circuit as Didi, is hugely popular among the entertainer community - and he is no stranger to the live category, either. The last time he was involved in the live vote was as a member of the band Kick, and they really did kick because their live act was performed in bright green mankinis and cowboy boots. So this year, expect something off the hook from Didi. Phil Francis, also in this category, is a magician on both electric and acoustic guitars and will surely dazzle with his skills. Scott Bateman has amazing vocals and, couple that with what he can do with a sixstring and it’s going to be close, especially with Luke Towler appearing as the youngest nominee in the live vote. Luke has been building his reputation over the last few years here and in the UK. He has performed on stage

with the likes of Dappy, and was the support act for Cody Simpson and Stereokicks during their respective UK tours. Plus, he also has almost 31,000 followers on Twitter. But ultimately, this will come down to the live vote on the day and what is produced during their 7-10 minute time slot. The category I find really interesting this year is that of Best DJ. Ben Simington, resident DJ at Papagayo Beach, is up there alongside new nominees DJ Grokie, DJ Jack and Luca Fernandez. This is so interesting this year because the names usually featured in this category are missing. So over the next couple of weeks, I will be making sure that Canarian Weekly lets everyone know about these new TEAS’ names. Another tough category will be the male singers. Each vocalist really is at the top of his game. I have my own favourites in each category, but I can honestly say that I can’t place a vote in this one. I’ll just to

have to do it like a lucky dip. All four are exceptional and I am also friends with them all, so I’ll be writing their names on four bits of paper a making a blind selection. It is fabulous to see Laura “Doris” Day nominated in the best newcomer category. This girl started off singing a few songs on Karaoke and has become extremely popular as the Brewers Droop compere. She really is following a dream, so not only is she a newcomer to the awards but is also a

newcomer to entertainment, so it would be brilliant to see her win. Equally, the other three nominees in the newcomer category deserve that same recognition. Mark Clarke has fast become a well-known host and is currently packing them in nightly at Harvey’s Bar in Los Cristianos. He has been singing and working as an entertainer in the UK for many years and is very experienced on stage, along with Elijah Thomson who has a big voice and great stage

presence. I’m not sure whether Caralee Gledhill will be back in Tenerife for the awards, but she has been working as Amy Winehouse here in Tenerife for the majority of 2015. She recently returned to the UK and teamed up with her sister, and they are currently working on original material and writing songs together. Over the next few weeks, every nominee will get a mini review on this page, and I wish them all good luck in their quest for an award.

Ketchup on tomatina 2015 IT seems incredible that the La Tomatina festival, featuring the world’s biggest tomato “squash”, has celebrated its 70th anniversary.

Around 20,000 people jammed the streets of the small Valencian town of Buñol and, in just one splatter-filled hour, roughly between 10-11am, some 25 tons of tomatoes, offloaded from seven trucks, were hurled by revellers at one another. The event is held annually on the last Wednesday of August, and it really was what you’d call painting the town red. Around 200,000 tomatoes were hurled during the fight. But don’t view it as a dreadful waste of food and money because the tomatoes are shipped in from Extremadura, where they are much

cheaper than elsewhere. It renders the exhibitionists and the town awash with red pulp. But once the end of the spree is signalled by the launch of a firecracker, and once tranquillity is restored, the streets and buildings are hosed down, while gleeful revellers take the easy way out by using public showers. Needless to say, this outrageous event has inspired similar festivals in countries around the world, in-

cluding Colombia, the United States and India. The festival, for which participants pay an entrance fee, is said to have been launched in 1945. A group of young men supposedly staged a protest in the town’s main square during the parade of gigantes y cabezudos (giants and fatheads). The gang grabbed tomatoes from a nearby vegetable stand and used the fruit as weapons, forcing the police to intervene and break

up the fight. There are other versions, but this one seems as good as any. Modern festivities kick off with the climbing of the Palo Jabón, or “ham stick”. Participants attempt to climb a pole smeared with pig fat, in order to reach a ham, secured to the top of the pole. And when the ham falls, the serious stuff begins. For several years after its inception, local authorities discouraged the wacky festival. Then, in 1957, it was organised by a local group known as “Los Clavarios de San Luis Bertrán”, and was later taken over by the city chiefs. And St Luis Bertrán, a Valencian monk who became a missionary in South America, just happens to be the patron saint of Bunol. Who knows what he would have made of La Tomatina, though, because he was said to be a rather serious chap!

By Val Sainsbury DOCTORS are doling out powerful anti-psychotic drugs needlessly to thousands of patients, including those with learning disabilities, dementia and autism.

They are being fed them as a form of “chemical cosh” to control their behaviour, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal this week.

4th September - 10th September 2015

Chemical-cosh fury Anti-psychotics should normally be used to treat mental illness, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. But this research reveals that 71% people with learning difficulties who are prescribed the drugs, have no history of severe mental illness. The findings will fuel growing concerns that the nation has become “ o v e r- m e d i c a l i s e d ” , and that thousands of patients are suffering harmful side-effects as a result. And use of the drugs as a chemical restraint to alter the behaviour of vulnerable patients is particularly worrying. Scandalous treatment

of vulnerable and disabled people was highlighted with the exposure of shocking abuse of residents at the Winterbourne View care home, near Bristol, in 2011. Patients were forcibly sedated and restrained, with six care-workers jailed and five others given suspended sentences as a result. Campaigners said the new research suggested similar treatment was occurring outside care homes as well. The study, led by University College London, analysed data between 1999 and 2013 from more than 33,000 people with a learning disability. The patients studied

included people suffering from Down’s, dementia, autism and epilepsy. Many had difficulties with learning, communication, daily living and information and social skills. The researchers found that 9,135 had been prescribed anti-psychotic drugs, of whom 71% had no record of severe mental illness. Of the 11,915 people with a record of challenging behaviour, 47% had received anti-psychotic drugs, whereas just 13% had a record of severe mental illness. The authors concluded that people with a record of challenging behaviour were more than twice as likely to

receive anti-psychotics as those without such a history. Dr Rory Sheehan, of UCL’s Department of Psychiatry, said: “Many people with intellectual disability and behaviour disturbance have complex needs. And other interventions, such as looking at the support people receive and their communication needs, should be prioritised.” He added: “Anti-psychotics, or indeed any medications, should not be prescribed lightly and are no substitute for comprehensive care.” Mencap’s Dan Scorer said: “Sadly, the report findings are not a surprise. They confirm

what we have heard from families time and time again about loved ones being given high levels of anti-psychotic or anti-depressant medication, often for years. “In many cases, families report serious side-effects - and no evidence that the medication is helping the individual. “This new research shows this is happening not just at in-patient units like Winterbourne View but in the community as well.” Dominic Slowie, NHS England’s national clinical director for learning disabilities, says health chiefs are determined to take action to prevent over-medication.

TOUCHY FEELY! By Sue McDonald EVERY surface in your home has a texture and some are dictated by practical reasons. For example, you need to have smooth surfaces that can be easily kept clean in the kitchen and bathroom for sanitary reasons.

However, when it comes to other areas of the home, such as lounges and bedrooms, texture is another way

(apart from the more obvious use of colour) to introduce interest into your interior decoration scheme. Much will depend on your taste, and the effect you are trying to achieve. Modern schemes will generally

rely on smooth, shiny surfaces, which can be cool to the eye and the touch. This can include glass, chrome, plastic and high-gloss lacquered paint finishes, as well as leather or vinyl and smooth ce-

ramic tiles and plain, smooth blinds. Be careful not to create an effect that is too sterile and efficient, as this can end up looking like an office or a laboratory. At the other end of the scale are rough textures, such as plaster, wallpa-

per, brick, natural wood, rattan, patterned fabrics and wool carpets, textured tiles and draped fabrics. These are suited more to a rustic or farmhouse scheme, but they tend to be cosier and appear warmer. So, regardless of colour, you can create a totally different appearance using the texture of the items only. That´s not to say you can´t mix it up a bit and throw a shiny glass table into a rustic setting, or a shaggy carpet into a modern one, as it is very much a matter of personal taste. As with all interior decoration, there are no hard and fast rules, but there are things that work well and oth-

ers that don’t create the right effect. Remember that too much texture, pattern and dark colour will make a room appear small and gloomy by absorbing light, whereas light, fresh colours and plainer textures will make the space seem bigger because they reflect it. An interesting example of how to add interest is to use the same colour in lots of different textures, so differentiating between them, but keeping everything harmonious. For example, a leather sofa in beige, with dark-brown textured cushions - as they are tones of the same colour, they will definitely go together. You can make a single-patterned and textured item be the focal point in a room of smooth modern items. For example, by using modern bedroom furniture but a heavilytextured or patterned bedspread or woollen rug. If you are unsure how to use texture to create an effect, consider using an interior designer to help you. These are not just for the rich and famous and, at Deco Nuevo for example, this service is included in the price of the furniture.

The Garden of Paradise!

By Vanessa Vee AT the mention of the word Madeira, It’s typical of me to think of cake and wine! But, having being fortunate to visit this stunning Portuguese island twice, I’d love to give you a brief insight into what is known as the Garden Island. Here in Tenerife, we are lucky to have direct flights to Madeira, which is a far from being another Ibiza. It attracts a much more mature clientèle ... and raving is limited to enthusing about the island’s dramatic scenery and botanical wonders! Madeirans know this, of course, and over the years they have enhanced their quality of life by producing fine food and wine. Helpfully, they have also provided access to their picturesque countryside by building more than 1,000 miles of irrigation channels, accompanied by footpaths that snake through the striking landscapes. Discover Madeira and find yourselves strolling through a sun-dappled mimosa forest, between renowned botanical gardens, and looking forward to an al fresco lunch on the terrace of a hillside tea room enroute. There is a variety of walks with no perils, as many have, and the Levada dos Tornos - between the Palheiro and Funchal municipal botanical gardens - is a gentle introduction to them. Most of the island is a botanical site of volcanic soil in which just about

anything grows. Palheiro, in the hills above Funchal, has an outstanding collection of greenery, but the most impressive specimen is a towering Norfolk Island pine from New Zealand. The beauty of the levadas is that they are fairly level, quiet waterchannels in rural areas, where noise is limited to birdsong, an occasional barking dog and tolling of distant church bells. The island is renowned for wine-production, and areas of Madeira present a patchwork of precipitous, terraced vineyards that appear to defy logic and gravity. There is not enough level land here to park a harvesting machine, much less use one. Most visitors are content to wander around the capital, Funchal, and nearby villages. This leaves much of the island largely untouched by mass tourism; thus, preserving its rural charm. The volcanic heart of Madeira, reached on a helter-skelter road winding up above the clouds, is a geological nightmare of splintered rock. The road ends at the summit of Pico do Arieiro, the third-highest peak, where a snack bar offers panoramic views of solidified lava and ash, which are a vision of the dawn of time. Visit Funchal’s 17thcentury warehouses, where astonishing wines can be sampled around oak barrel tables. Whether you are looking for a wine to commemorate the building of the Eiffel Tower in 1890, or perhaps to commiserate with the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, all are available, at prices deemed reasonable by true wine connoisseurs.

Our final excursion has to be to the infamous baskets of Madeira. Catch the Cable Car for a 15-minute ride up. It’s an exciting way to see the fantastic views over Funchal, though somewhat breathtaking and most certainly not for the faint-hearted. Once at the Monte, visit the Tropical Palace Gardens, which is about 550 metres above Funchal. This will take 2-3 hours of your time, enjoying the great views over Funchal. Sculpture and artwork are found in the museum within the gardens. After your visit, you might like to take the famous Toboggan Run down. This form of transport has been around since 1850 and was a fast means of travel down to Funchal for all the wealthy aristocrats who lived in the Monte. Their sole purpose today is to cater for the thousands of tourists it attracts every year. These two-seater wicker baskets glide on wooden runners, pushed and steered by two men, traditionally dressed in white cotton clothes and a straw hat, using their rubber-soled boots as brakes. A bit of a hairraising experience, but I am so glad I have done it. Tenerife Sunshine Travel has some excellent last-minute breaks to Madeira this September for seven nights, from only 589 euros per person. This includes return flights from Tenerife, resort transfers and seven nights’ accommodation with breakfast in a 4-star hotel, based on two people sharing. For dates, more information and reservations, please call 922 751 867 (ext 1).

SUITS YOU

MADAM! By Carl Pattison

HAS anyone ever told you that your hair looks amazing… or that it really doesn’t suit you? What about the friend who didn’t say your hair was gorgeous... until you changed it?

And no one ever said your roots needed doing, or that your ends were split? None of us likes to hear anyone criticise us. We just love compliments, and people telling us how fabulous we look, don’t we? Yet try to get an honest answer out of anyone and you’re on rocky ground. So why is it we fear the truth, especially when it comes to our image? We have a set idea of how we are perceived by others, which is why, when it comes down to hearing the truth, we don’t like it. Over 95% of my clients DON’T know what they want. Okay, when they are happy with their hair, they tell me to repeat what I did the last time. Most don’t even get involved with what’s going on. So why is it that most stylists have the power to keep their clients happy and have repeat custom? It’s all down to one word: TRUST! It’s being happy to leave your precious hair in their hands, knowing you will be pleased with

the results. This is why good salons have repeat visits from clients who trust and confide in their stylists, like the ones who come for a “trim” but leave with a new style. This stops you and us getting in a rut and becoming bored. We love to be challenged and pestered for new looks - that’s what it’s all about! Most stylists and salons have a “style” of working, a way of creating haircuts that reflect their salon’s image. It’s like this … you wouldn’t go to Armani to ask for a Chanel dress. Each one has his/her way of creating looks, and the same

goes for hairdressing, too. It is all about finding the salon and, most importantly, the stylist who is on your wavelength, who you can trust with your crowning glory that’s sitting upon your head. If the connection isn’t there, then that salon isn’t for you. Not that it’s a bad salon - just that it doesn’t match you or your lifestyle. Finding the right one is difficult, I know, but once you get one, stick with it. Your stylist might not be your best friend, but they are the ones who can make you want to hide away - or stand out from the crowd. You should be able to talk to your stylist before during and after your appointment is finished. Building up a trust is the most important thing you can gain from your stylist. After all, if your hair is important to you, it’s even more important to us.

LOCAL charity Helping Hands has come to the rescue of a young man, cut off in his prime by the progressive disease muscular dystrophy.

Oliver Garcia Carmenatis, known to all as Oli, was presented with a specially-designed wheelchair last Friday, which gives him a degree of independence. And the 20-year-old will relish it because he was an active sportsman and a well-known rally driver before being confined to an old wheelchair, which, apart from deteriorating, was inadequate for his needs. Family and friends decided that Oli, who lives in Santa Barbara, Icod de los Vinos, needed an up-to-date model and set about raising the required money. Ann Goulden was President of Friends of Tenerife when the charity group members raised thousands of euros for the Associacion San Lazaro and the Projectos Martha with various events. They even entered a Spanish team in an Atlantic rowing race in

2001, naming the boat Martha Dos! Sadly, the two centres who cared for children with cerebral palsy were forced to close down two years ago. Ann stopped fundraising, but she always supported Liz Montague and her popular Helping Hands charity because she admired what they were achieving. Then she spotted Oliver’s collecting box in Icod’s Farmacia/Ortopedia-Isabel Sánchez Guión and offered her assistance, “bullying” friends into buying raf-

fle tickets and contacting Helping Hands, which came up trumps, as always. The new wheelchair, designed especially for Oli by an English company called Sunrise and valued at nearly 2,000 euros, was provided at cost price. The farmacia made no profit, so a big thanks to both from Ann and Liz. Oli’s new wheels gives him much more freedom, and he is still a regular member of Ni Pa Tanto, a Carnaval murga group in Icod, founded 40 years ago. It’s members organised

a fund-raising raffle and dinner earlier this year to enablethe family to carry out some muchneeded work on Oli’s house. But the youngster, who still needs funds desperately for transport for his weekly exercise at a swimming pool each week, is obviously delighted with his new wheelchair. He has said a big thank-you to Ann, and also to Helping Hands because, as he stressed: “Without them, it would have taken an awful long time to raise the money.”

SUITS YOU, SIR By Carl Pattison

WHEN it comes to getting a suit right, men tend to go for what they are comfortable with, rather than what suits them.

But if you’re going to get it right, there are a few factors you guys should consider before making a major purchase like this. Always take along a trusted friend or partner because you will need an opinion of the whole look before splashing the cash. If it’s a suit for work, you must go for comfort. Light materials are perfect for our climate, so even if you are opting for black, make sure you’re not picking a heavy wool as you will fry here, even in winter. The classiest of looks is a simple, centre-buttoning jacket with straight-leg trousers. If you want a more modern look, go for a single or doublebreasted jacket, with a fitted or narrow-leg trouser. Never let the trousers drop below the top of your shoes as this will look scruffy, so make sure you have it altered if it doesn’t fit you perfectly. Colours will depend on you ... what suits the task of your suit. If it is for work, classic grey works as well as black, and even a sandier colour in this climate will look professional. If you’re going to a wedding or a formal occasion, try mixing a coloured jacket with a more classic trouser colour. This can

work well, but make sure your shirt and tie - if your wearing one blend with the whole colour scheme. But if you are wearing a tie with a modern suit, go for a slender one as a wide type rarely finishes off a tailored look. And don’t rule out adding a waistcoat underneath, especially if you will be sitting down a lot and opening your jacket. Waistcoats not only look elegant but slim down your frame as well. And they still carry off that formal image, even if you take off your jacket. Keep accessories such as tie pins and watches to a minimum. Opt for slender items because bulky ones will ruin the look. Finally, don’t think suits cannot be worn separately. The jacket can look just as good with a pair of jeans, as can the trousers with a smart T-shirt, so mix and match them up with your wardrobe to ring the changes.

Motor

By Emma at Motorworld

THERE were no speed limits on Spanish roads including Tenerife - until the petrol crisis in 1974, when the authorities established a limit of 130 km/h.

Then, with the second petrol crisis two years later, maximum speed permitted was reduced to 100km/h. And, finally, in 1981 the limit was set at 120 km/h, which still stands today. The types of roads in Spain are as follows: *Autopistas (120km/h limit): Motorways in the UK *Autovias (120km/h): Dual carriageways in the UK *Via convencional (100km/h): A roads in the UK. A via convencional is classed as such only if it has a hard shoulder, be it dust

4th September - 10th September 2015

the Speed limits must be obeyed

or tarmac, of at least 1.5m wide. The reason for this is so that you can get your car off the road safely in the event of an accident or breakdown *Vias fuera de poblado (90 km/h): B roads in Britain. But in Spain there are two types those inside a town and those outside. A via fuera de poblado does not have a 1.5m hard shoulder *Via Urbanas o travesías (50 km/h): Innertown B road *Carretera sin clasificación: Unclassified roads in Britain, perhaps better known as rural or country roads or tracks There is also a speed restriction of 20km/h when a sign is erected for a residential area. The sign is blue with a white house, adult, child and car. The stated speeds are the normal limits, but reductions are applicable on certain roads in certain circumstances.

Motorways have a minimum speed limit of 60 km/h, unless there are traffic circumstances. For instance, when a queue forces you to go slower. This is why you often see lorries travelling with their hazards lights on because they are at or slightly below the minimum speed limit. These rules apply, provided there is not a speed-limit sign super-

seding these rules. For example, road works. On Autopistas, however, the limit for cars towing a small trailer up to 750kg is reduced to 90km/h, and 80 km/h when towing a caravan or trailer over 750 kg. The same limits apply on Autovias. On Vias Convencionales, the normal limit is 100km/h, but for cars towing a small trailer up to 750kg, or a trailer/caravan over 750kg,

the limit is reduced to 80km/h. On Vias Fuera de Poblado, the normal limit is 90km/h, which is reduced to 70 km/h for cars towing a small trailer up to 750kg or a trailer/caravan over 750kg. On Vias Urbanas o travesias, the normal limit is 50km/h, and there are no reductions for different circumstances. As already mentioned, the motorway minimum

is 60 km/h. But on all other types of roads, the minimum is half the maximum limit unless traffic circumstances prevent you from reaching this speed - a queue, accident, bad weather, etc. The above are the normal rules, but if, for example, you are on a via urbana in a town with a normal limit of 50 km/h, but there is a sign stating 30 km/h or 40 km/h, the sign limit takes preference. Where there are road works and yellow-andblack signs are displayed, the speed limits on these signs must be obeyed. There are several fixed-speed cameras on the island currently and, contrary to popular believe, they ARE fully functional. They are located on motorways, just after large blue-and-white signs saying “radar para su seguridad” and they show a car, bike and lorry.

Another Nasti-c defeat CD Tenerife 1 Nastic 2

By Roscoe YOU can’t say I didn’t warn Tenerife fans. I wrote a few weeks ago about the threat of Achille Emana, and his 35-minute cameo for Nastic was enough to inspire the visitors to a win you would never have believed they deserved until the Cameroon international came on.

A drab first half was quickly forgotten when Tenerife took the lead four minutes into the second half. A smart run by debut boy Choco Lozano caught centreback Pablo Mari napping and, with goalie Manolo Reina in noman’s-land, he flicked it over Reina’s head deftly and into the back of the net. It was an intelligent finish. A few moments later Suso was clean through on goal with just the keeper to beat and Pedro Martin screaming for the ball unmarked on his left. Suso took his time, enough to allow Ferran Giner to make a Position

turned. Ten minutes later they were level after some real comedy defending. A simple Nastic ball in the box was headed on by Rayco Garcia and, somehow, Pablo Mari made up for his earlier error to head the ball past a stranded Dani Hernandez. Aitor Sanz should have won the header and German was caught ball-watching. In fact, German’s poor

last-gasp challenge and the chance went begging. It was poor from the Tenerife man and another sign that, maybe, he is not the player he was. Suso finished last season poorly and there is no doubt the winger is not the same player as a year ago. The miss seemed to wake up Nastic. Vicente Moreno called for Emana and the match Points

start to his Tenerife career is starting to cause concern. Five minutes from time, Nastic struck again. Again, it was from a regulation cross as Emana played in Giner, who whipped the ball to the back post. And, despite the presence of four Tenerife shirts in the box, the smallest man on the field, Jean Luc, outjumped German to plant a header past Hernandez. There was no way back, and Tenerife have now lost back-to-back matches. It’s not the start anyone expected - and they don’t hang

around in the boardroom! President Miguel Concepcion gave manager Raul Agne the vote of confidence this week, and it’s clear there will be changes for the trip to Huesca this weekend. Job No.1 is to sort out the defence. German must be axed, and it looks as though 19-yearold Jorge Saenz will get his first start of the season. In training this week, he has been partnering Carlos Ruiz and is part of the 19-strong match-day squad. There needs to be a midfield shake-up, and maybe it’s time

to unleash Alberto. Huesca will play with a packed five-man midfield, which will included former Arsenal midfielder Fran Merida and exTenerife favourite Inigo Ros. He played 65 times in total. He was first choice in the 2013 promotion season and was a regular for the first half of the following season. He dropped down a league last season but was an ever-present as Huesca fought their way to promotion. Ros was well-liked in Santa Cruz, and it’s pleasing to see him back at this level.

Arny’s amazing arrows HITTING the highest checkout in either division will earn a player a nice slice of individual glory and an even nicer trophy come the end of the season - a fine bonus, even if your team are not successful.

Hanging on to the Division 2 high of 129 was Phoenix Flights’ captain, Pod. I say “was” because it was taken away from him in dramatic style by a team-

mate, Arny ‘Terminator’ Burnett! So it was hasta la vista, 129, as Arny notched a stunning 154 finish during the Flights’ 7-1 win at Waterfall B. Second-place Spear Chuckers matched that scoreline to beat Picassos, with Dick checking out on 117. Another high finish came at Pas O Nadas B for Sundowners Chris, who took out 130 and helped his team to a 5-3 win. Elsewhere, thirdplace Summerlands hit the Playgirls for six, Naughty Nautas held the trebles leg for a

with a 6-2 victory at Exiles to open a 12-point gap. Having drawn their last two matches, Boothen Titans were hungry for a win, and they easily gobbled up a seven-point haul at home against Palms Pool Bar, while the Golf

del Sur derby had Waterfall Warriors putting seven past Bar 180 B. After taking a bit of a pasting at Boothen Army last week, the Playboys dusted themselves down, enjoyed a fine evening with Palms Sports Bar - and a 6-2 win!

7

Finally, hat-tip of the week goes to Pas O Nadas A, who, after being rooted to the bottom of the division for a while, went to 4th-placed Hoppys Bar and came away with a handy four points, which sent Bar 180 B below them in the process.

Underdogs are barking loudest AS we have an international break this weekend, reflection on the Premier League tells us that Manchester City aside, it looks like being one of the closest in a long time, and games are becoming harder to predict.

Who would have thought Liverpool, Chelsea and Man Utd would all have been losers last weekend? With

the closing of the transfer window, only the socalled lesser teams really strengthened, making it an even tighter league, potentially. The Oasis Fm Fantasy Football league is following suit because last season’s big pointscoring players have failed to perform so far this season, and managers are changing their teams constantly. But they’re struggling to hit a perfect formula and it is going to be a long season. Again, the point-scoring team of the week points to the excellent results achieved by the

underdogs, Southampton benefited the most after their convincing win over Norwich, with three of their players making the grade. After that, it was really spread across the league with a player from Everton, Man City, West Ham, Arse-

nal, West Brom, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Swansea forming the rest of the team. Southampton’s Dušan Tadić was the highest point-scorer with 15 after his two goals against Norwich. In the league, we have a new team in the No.1 spot, Just 4fun, managed by Paul Plowman, came right up on the inside rail to take top spot, and it will come as no surprise that they were also the Team of the Week. They came in with a fantastic total of 91 points, and it was a real team effort.

Hammers have dream finish IF results continue to go the way they are after five weeks into the new Direct Telecom Pool League, this really will be one of the closest seasons we’ve ever had.

Gaffers A were not in action this week, which gave Dreamers A an opportunity to move to the top of the league. But they had to overcome a big hurdle in the shape of Tenerife Hammers A. The Los Cristianos boys, who have made a fast start to the season, again raced out the blocks with Steve, Mark A and Tommy winning games to give them a 4-1 lead. Hammers hit back with a couple of frames, but Dreamers took a 5-3 lead into the last session. Mark A then capped a fine performance, winning his third game, and the home team had a point, but they wanted the win. Hammers are a decent team, though, and Paul, Wez and Barry dug deep to take the last three frames and a share of the points. Treehouse A have moved into third spot after taking the spoils in a tight match against Palms B. It

looked ominous to start with as Palms raced into a 3-1 lead, only for the home team to match the scoreline in the next section, levelling the score at 4-4. Treehouse then looked as though they found another gear and took the first three frames of the final session to secure the points; Scott appears to have found his feet in Division One, winning his three games. Terrace Bantams are flying in fourth spot (yes, I know chicken’s can’t fly). They had a home clash with The Phoenix, who were looking for their first win this season. But Bantams are full of confidence and, when that happens, the pockets look bigger, the pots look straighter and they were soon 4-1 up. A little wobble followed, though, with a couple of poor frames. But Marky P steadied the ship to lead 5-3 into the final session. Bubbles nicked one back for Phoenix, but Mal and Con took their frames confidently and the Bantams had another three points on the board. Phoenix Potters fared better against Terrace Roosters in Los Abrigos. The Werthers’ brigade were buoyant

after a win last week, and it showed as they moved around the table with confidence. Frames were traded, but the Roosters were proving a tough shell to crack (yes another chicken-based pun) but the home team, with just about enough sherry left in the tank eventually took the seventh frame they needed to win. Gaffers B have made a great start to life in the First Division, while their opponents on Tuesday, Rewind A, have been a little slow out of the box. This proved to be the case at the table as the home team picked up early frames for a 3-1 lead. That’s where the points were won because the following two sections each finished 2-2, so that early extra frame gained was decisive. Gaffers B’s Harry was the difference on the night, winning all his three games. At the Palms Bar, Tenerife Hammers C played host to Exiles A in yet another tight game. Across the first eight frames, there was nothing to separate the two teams, but Exiles eventually edged into a 6-5 lead. Ken, for Hammers C, then faced Ben and played a good game. It looked like head-

ing for a draw, only for heartache when Ken potted the black and the white also went in. Exiles took the points as Hammers were left kicking themselves. Palms A have not had a good start to the season but they had a home game - and their form there was good: played one, won one! They welcomed Bluebell A to the Palms and it was game-on as they looked to improve their form. It was another one of those matches where neither team wanted to give anything away. Bluebell were 3-1 ahead early on before Palms fought back. At 4-4 it was game-on, only for the visitors to take the next two frames. But JT won his third game to give Palms hope of a deserved point, which they took as captain Roscoe won the last frame. There is a gap starting to open up at the head of Division Two. Treehouse B, currently top, looked to extend their lead against Hoppys Bar at home. Hoppys are a difficult team to beat and, try as they might, Treehouse could not get a foot in the game. The home team dug deep, fought for every frame and, come the end of the match, they were rewarded with a good point. Bluebell B, in second spot, they kept up pressure on the leaders after recording a good victory at home to league new boys Crown B. Last week, the newcomers enjoyed a relatively easy win, but they came up against stubborn opponents who know how to win in this league. The frames were tight and mistakes were punished, but the home team did just about enough to claim seven frames for the win. Picasso’s A played

host to Crown A and were given a confidence boost when the away team turned up with just three players. It meant, technically, that they already had three frames on the scoresheet. However, Fran and her team were in fine form and took early frames to race into a lead. Crown A didn’t have an answer and, even with four players, the outcome would have

probably been the same as Picasso’s celebrated their first win. Dreamers B, another team who had made a good start, travelled to take on Splash Bar hoping for another points haul. But it wasn’t to be a great night for them as Craig and his team dished up some excellent pool. They played with confidence and were delighted to get their season started with a win.

Big transfer fees, but no surprises

WITH an ominous clunk, the transfer window closed for the summer at 6pm on Tuesday. Deadline Day used to be something to look forward to, who was going where? Was there going to be a surprise? But it all rather fell flat like an unexploded rocket on Bonfire Night. Personally, I would rather see the window open on the final day of the season and close the night before the first game of the new season. January I can live with, as it gives teams an opportunity to have a little gamble, dependent on their position. This window saw spending hit £870m, which means that in 2015 for the first time, clubs have paid out over £1bn in transfer fees! But how did your club get on? ARSENAL The only club in Europe´s top five leagues not to buy an outfield player, their only summer capture being Petr Cech from Chelsea. Arsene Wenger bemoaned a lack of available talent but, if rumours are to be believed, he turned down Edison Cavani because he has no resale value. He´s 28, so where exactly is he going to go after 3-4 years at a club? For me, the lack of investment has cost them a shot at the league title. Ins: 1 Outs: 14 ASTON VILLA Tim (he likes a sweater) Sherwood has overseen a massive summer turnover of players and can now say that it is his team. They lost big players in Benteke and Delph, but he has fleshed out his squad with some decent signings, bringing in Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott to stiffen the defence, Scott Sinclair and Adama Traore for flair and Rudy Gestede, who looks a good front man. Ins: 12 Outs: 15 BOURNEMOUTH The club concentrated on bringing in attacking players, the capture of long-term target Glenn Murray reaching a successful conclusion. Their biggest outlay was £8m on defender Tyrone Mings from Ipswich, but their dealings have been soured with the news that Mings and Max Gradel, their second-costliest signing, have picked up long-term injuries. Ins: 11 Outs: 8 CHELSEA Their strength in the market has always served Chelsea well, but this time around they certainly didn´t get it their own way. Pedro was the high-profile capture they needed but, other than that, they have been frustrated after chasing Jon Stones and Paul Pogba unsuccessfully. The signing of three defenders speaks dividends about their current weakness. Ins: 9 Outs: 39 (33 Loans!) CRYSTAL PALACE The bulk of Palace’s incoming business was secured early, with Yohan Cabaye’s club record arrival a statement of intent to set an upbeat tone. Deadline Day was largely spent streamlining the squad with scope to add more bodies, if deemed necessary, in the midwinter window. Ins: 5 Outs: 12 EVERTON Resisting Chelsea’s pursuit of John Stones was Everton’s most important act, but it is an exaggeration to say the club have shown serious ambition in this window. Additions have been modest and, having paid £3.25m above the initial £6.25m fee for Ramiro Funes Mori, Roberto Martínez finished without the playmaker and striker he wanted. Ins: 7 Outs: 7 LEICESTER CITY Leicester’s final act of the window was to get winger Nathan Dyer on loan from Swansea, He became their sixth signing of a summer in which all areas have been strengthened. Gökhan Inler, the Swiss captain, was their highest-profile purchase, while Japanese striker Shinji Okazaki made an early impact with a goal at West Ham. Ins: 7 Outs: 10

LIVERPOOL Compared with last summer’s chaotic scramble - one culminating in four of nine signings already leaving - Liverpool enjoyed a far more decisive and coherent window. Weaknesses in attack, at rightback and in terms of experience, were addressed, though doubts remain over the quality while a lot of expensive deadwood was removed. But how long will Brenda be there to oversee his team? Ins: 8 Outs: 18 MANCHESTER CITY City are clear winners of the window for the heavyweight clubs. They boast the stellar transfer in Raheem Sterling and, arguably, they boast the bargain acquisition in Fabian Delph. They also have the strength-in-depth buy in Nicolás Otamendi. And then there is the icing-on-the-cake purchase of £51m Kevin De Bruyne, who should slot into an already flying team. Ins: 7 Outs: 13 MANCHESTER UTD Where do you even begin with regards to United’s end to the transfer window? They are now in a blame game with Real Madrid over the collapsed transfer of David de Gea, and they then went out and spent a huge £36m, which could rise to £52m, on a French teenager, of whom Wayne Rooney had never heard. It´s Anthony Martial, by the way, Wayne! Lots of head-scratching at Old Trafford. Ins: 6 Outs: 14 NEWCASTLE UTD Steve McClaren will be reasonably happy although, ideally, he would have liked another striker (preferably Charlie Austin) as well as an extra centre-half, right-back and left-back. Chancel Mbemba looks a fine defensive acquisition, and, in Georginio Wijnaldum and Florian Thauvin, extremely promising creators. But questions remain about Aleksandar Mitrovic’s temperament, especially as he already has one red card to his name, if not his goal-scoring aptitude. Ins: 5 Outs: 7 Norwich City Alex Neil’s summer-long search for a striker turned up the late signing of Dieumerci Mbokani on loan, although the manager would like to have brought an additional front man into the ranks. Versatile Robbie Brady has been the biggest signing of a relatively quiet window, while the ex-West Brom pair of Graham Dorrans and Youssouf Mulumbu will add to their midfield options. Ins: 7 Outs: 10 SOUTHAMPTON Ronald Koeman successfully made light of a summer of upheaval at Southampton last season, and he has to do the same again following more departures. The team have struggled defensively so far, but the signing of centre-back Virgil van Djik on Deadline Day could rectify that. Retaining the defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama should also help. Ins: 8 Outs: 6 STOKE CITY They are among the most intriguing summer recruiters, with the arrival of creative talents such as Xherdan Shaqiri, from Internazionale and Barce-

lona’s Ibrahim Afellay. continuing the club’s glamorous makeover under Mark Hughes. Marco van Ginkel on loan from Chelsea will have to shine as Steven N’Zonzi’s midfield replacement if they are to fly high. Ins: 10 Outs: 5 SUNDERLAND Dick Advocaat had become so disillusioned that Ellis Short, the owner, felt compelled to buy him Fabio Borini as a last-minute present. Doubts linger about the defence - are Younès Kaboul, Sebastián Coates, Adam Matthews and, now, DeAndre Yedlin, really the answer? Yann M’Vila looks an excellent midfielder, while Jeremain Lens adds a little creativity. Ins: 8 Outs: 4 SWANSEA The signing of André Ayew on a free transfer already seems a piece of bargain business. The Ghanaian has scored three goals and provided a sublime assist for Bafétimbi Gomis against Manchester United. Their other big signings, left-back Franck Tabanou and striker Éder are yet to start in the league. Nathan Dyer’s fall from favour has resulted in the winger moving on loan to Leicester in their only real departure. Ins: 6 Outs: 4 TOTTENHAM Daniel Levy succeeded in keeping Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane, while shipping out plenty of unwanted players. But he has failed to sign a defensive midfielder and a new striker, which makes this transfer window seem like a missed opportunity. The chairman’s strategy in this market has come under scrutiny. Ins: 5 Outs: 14 WATFORD Few would have expected a quiet transfer window from the Pozzo family, but the extent to which Watford’s promotion-winning squad has been overhauled raises eyebrows, nonetheless. Adlène Guedioura, an on-loan success last season, returned on Deadline Day to provide some continuity. And he was joined by forwards Victor Ibarbo and Obbi Oularé. Ins: 15 Outs: 9 WEST BROMWICH West Brom managed to rebuff Tottenham’s attempts to sign Saido Berahino, but he now claims he will not play again under chairman Jeremy Peace. Tony Pulis has, at least, worked hard to strengthen the team’s spine, and Salomón Rondón, a club-record signing, has already made a strong impression up front. Pulis was happy to let centre-back Joleon Lescott join Villa after capturing Jonny Evans from Manchester United. Ins: 7 Outs: 9 WEST HAM Dmitry Payet already looks a delightful signing, but a busy end to the transfer window was still required for the club to address their lack of width, strengthen their firepower and add creativity. The east Londoners are looking much more balanced than they were at the start of the season, with the late additions of such players as Alex Song, Victor Moses, Nikica Jelavic and Michail Antonio. Ins: 11 Outs: 8
