Spain opens doors Continued from front. This week an estimated 50,000 people, migrants who are fleeing fighting in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, have tried to enter the EU through borders at various countries. Yesterday (Thursday), the European Parliament backed plans for the mandatory relocation of 120,000 refugees around the European Union - a move which comes just days before a meeting of interior ministers. They will discuss the ongoing problem and try to find measures to ease the crisis. Earlier in the week, the Spanish Government agreed to take in another 14,931 refugees, as proposed by the EU Commission, in addition to the 2,379 it said initially the country would accept as part of EU efforts to help alleviate the crisis. The Government had announced it would be accepting only 2,379 refugees, while Brussels quoted a figure of 5,849 originally. This paltry figure drew outrage from many across the country and has led to Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s U-turn. He said: “The Government advocates a common asylum and immigration policy, co-operation with the countries of origin and continued efforts against the mafias engaged in peopletrafficking.” Furthermore, he said that resolving the situation in Syria and Libya must be a priority for the international community. “The Government of Spain will maintain a constructive position regarding the humanitarian problem occurring with the arrival of refugees in the European Union,” added Rajoy. “Spain will collaborate to help those people persecuted for political reasons, or because of civil war in their country, which is precisely the case in Syria at the moment. “This position represents the majority sentiment among the people of Spain and is a moral duty, as citizens of an advanced, modern and civilised democracy such as ours.”

As for the European Commission proposal that refugees be accepted by each country, Rajoy said: “Spain will show solidarity - we will not argue over numbers. “However, what I do want is for there to be a global policy, and that we get to the grass roots of the problem.” Rajoy also called for Syria and Libya to be made priorities for the international community, and for the EU to cooperate with the countries of origin. “As long as people cannot enjoy decent living standards in their own country, they will leave their country,” he said. The PM welcomed the announcement made

on Wednesday by JeanClaude Juncker, President of the European Commission, stating that the European Union will create a 1.8bneuro fund for this cooperation. And Rajoy also highlighted the need for the EU to fight together against the mafias engaged in people-trafficking, “because we cannot stand here and ignore the number of people who have lost their lives in the Mediterranean”. At a joint press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron in Madrid earlier this month, Rajoy climbed down, saying Spain had never refused asylum to

anyone, neither in the past, nor now. Spain has done more than many other EU member states to tighten up border controls. According to a report by the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid, published in June, 180,580 people have sought asylum in Spain in the past 30 years, whereas 202,645 filed an application in Germany in 2014 alone. Currently, there are no plans for the EU or the Spanish Government to bring refugees to the Canary Islands, even though some local politicians have stated that we would not be against the idea. Barcelona, Madrid and

several other cities, governed by councils with roots in the “indignado” (outraged) movement, have formed a network of “safe” cities to assist Syrian refugees arriving in Europe. Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau launched a register of families willing to open their homes to the tragic families and individuals, or simply provide help for them. The scheme has proved an immediate success, with thousands of Catalans emailing their details to the list. At least a dozen cities have enlisted so far, and Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena has been looking at “ways of alleviating the distress”. Valencia has plans to open emergency accommodation for refugees, allocating 110 social workers to look after children, specifically. And several councils have asked banks to release housing stock, vacant since the property market tumbled. Other cities involved include Pamplona, Zaragoza, La Coruña and Malaga. Barcelona’s Mayor said the predicament of people fleeing war and persecution was “shameful”, condemning Europe for dodging the issue and criticising the “ridiculous” figure proposed initially by Madrid’s authorities to cope with the crisis. Global aid charity Save The Children has urged the Government to help hundreds of Syrian refugee children, who are close to the Spanish territory of Melilla, in north Africa. In a statement, STC said: “A thousand Syrians who have fled war, most of them children, are stuck in the Moroccan cities of Nador and Beni Enzar, waiting for the Moroccan police to

let them enter Melilla.” It urged the Spanish Government to order its Nador consulate to issue humanitarian permits for the Syrians to cross the nearby border into Melilla, which is a Spanish territory bordering northern Morocco. Melilla is a tiny Spanish city, with around 80,000 inhabitants, and is one of only two European land borders with Africa. The other one, Ceuta, another Spanish territory, is much further west. The organisation, which has observers at the scene, said Moroccan police had occasionally closed the border with Melilla to Syrians, while some families were getting separated on either side of the frontier. Meanwhile a migrant father, who was famously tripped by a Hungarian camerawoman while holding his son, is to start a new life in Spain. Osama Abdul Mohsen fell while running across the Serbia-Hungary border last week. Petra Laszlo, who was filming the scene, was later fired. Mohsen, a qualified football coach in Syria, will now work at a sports school in Getafe, near Madrid. He told El Mundo: “The future will be very good for my son in Spain.” He said he and sevenyear-old Zaid had endured a difficult journey to Europe, after meeting with another son, Mohammad, who had already reached the continent by boat. “The journalist’s kick was scary and hard,” he added. “My feeling was surprise - and then pain when I saw the fear and panic in the face of my son. Zaid cried for two hours. I was terrified.”

OASIS FM: 106.3... THE PLACE TO BE!

OASIS Fm is making a historic frequency change which will see the English-language station moving from 101fm & 101.2fm to 106.3fm.

“Our listeners will notice a difference,” said EmCam Media Managing Director Chris Elkington. “We started broadcasting Oasis Fm on 4th August 1997 and, 18 years later, our mission hasn’t changed. “We provide news, information and entertainment aimed at a family audience, serving them with detailed coverage that no other English-language station in Tenerife can provide. “We pride ourselves on local news content, produced by our sister company, the Canarian Weekly newspaper. “Oasis Fm has maintained its position as the first choice of listening for the Island residents, and tourists, by continuing to provide compelling, entertaining and truly local radio for them. “And this will continue to be the case as we are the ONLY Englishlanguage station transmitting legally on an official licensed frequency… now that’s what I call the best 18th birthday present we could have!” According to Chris, who is also an on-the-air personality, there have been many testimonies to the station having changing people’s lives. “What we do is an honour,” he said. “It has taken us 18 years to be broadcasting on an official licensed frequency. It will take a short while for the technical side to be finished perfectly and for some listeners to find us. But I believe people will like the change!”

Cut out the appalling fiestas, say protesters

DESPITE opposition from many Spaniards, the annual Toro de la Vega festival went ahead on Tuesday, with hundreds of men on horseback, brandishing sharpened spears, chasing a terrified bull through the streets of Tordesillas.

They jeered and taunted the poor animal, named Rompesuelas - roughly translated as “Broken Souls” - as it ran for its life through the town’s streets in north-west Spain. The men, in a frenzy, stabbed the poor animal several times to slow it down as it sprinted through a meadow. And, when it finally slumped to the ground exhausted, a knife was driven through its neck! Thousands of furious protesters turned up in

a vain attempt to stop the hunters complete their bloody task in one of the oldest of Spanish festivals, with roots dating back to the 15th century. A survey by animal protection charity Humane Society International (HSI) showed that 74% of Spanish residents, aged 16-65, want the bloodfest to end, with just 8% supporting it. The group has called on Spanish officials to listen to its people and put an immediate end

Canaries’ economy just keeps growing THE Canary Islands’ Gross domestic product (GDP) grew during the second quarter by 3.3% over the same 2014 period.

It was the biggest gain in the last five years, according to data released by the Canarian Institute of Statistics (LBS). Accounting by the

LBS, whose data begins in January 2011, also reveals that the Archipelago’s economy is steadily improving after seven consecutive quarters of increase. That’s nearly two years, specifically, from the fourth quarter of 2013. The Canarian GDP progress, noted last spring, shows a 20% growth against the whole of the Spanish economy (3.1%) and twice that of the German economy (1.6%).

In a statement, Pedro Ortega, Minister of Economy, Industry and Trade, emphasised that the data confirms that “the revival of the islands is very much alive, and we are strengthening.” In addition, there is expressed confidence that the succession of upward quarters already accumulated in the Canary GDP “is moved significantly to generating more activity and employment”.

to “all fiestas that involve animal cruelty”. The Toro de la Vega is one of thousands of violent fiestas which cause animals suffering and distress every year, according to HSI Executive Director Joanna Swabe, who called it a “cruel spectacle, that causes stress and suffering to a bull for nothing more than entertainment”. She added: “This poll shows the strength of feeling held by Spanish citizens who oppose this fiesta, and the level of opposition to the use of public funds to support bull fiestas.” Shely Bryan, HSI Campaign Director, said: “This is a particularly nasty Spanish fiesta that sees a bull subjected to a protracted and terrifying ordeal. “It must be exceptionally distressing for the bull because there is lots of shouting and jeering as he tries to run for his life, the ‘spearmen’ chasing him down, all the while taunting the poor animal. “Eventually, when he can go on no more, he falls to the ground, as his killer approaches on foot and drives a knife

through the back of his neck.” Undercover footage from animal charities ProVegan and PACMA showed the bull collapsing into the dirt and writhing in pain as the hunters cheered around him. One man tentatively approached the motionless animal and grabbed one of its horns triumphantly. The explicit video showed blood running down the bull’s leg from the multiple stab wounds it suffered. The hunters then cut off the animal’s testicles and paraded them around a spear before the man who finally killed the bull was given a medal. A demonstration in central Madrid last

Saturday, organised by Spanish animal protection group PACMA, saw many tens of thousands of Spanish citizens march against the event. More than 120,000 people have signed the group’s “Break a Spear” campaign, which calls on politicians to act to end all animal-killing fiestas. Claire Bass, Executive Director of HSI UK, said: “We are sickened by the gratuitous animal cruelty that took place at the Toro de la Vega fiesta. “It’s time for Spanish politicians to wake up to 21st century ethical values and end this barbaric, archaic and perverse form of ‘entertainment’ for good.”

Huge crowds turn out for independence race

S UPP O RT E R S of independence gathered in mindboggling hundreds of thousands in Barcelona last Friday to hold a march that has become an annual 11th September tradition. But it takes on additional meaning this year because of upcoming regional elections, which could lead to Catalonia’s secession

from Spain. Hoardes of crowds, wearing in white T-shirts, had filled the four traffic lanes

of Meridiana Avenue completely by 5.14pm, when the main event of the Diada - Catalonia

Day - began. As demonstrators chanted “Independence” and waved esteladas - the unofficial flag of an independent Catalonia - a giant yellow arrow was carried five kilometres by a group of athletes from the most northern point of Meridiana Avenue to the Catalan parliament, along a route christened Via Lliure (Liberty Road). Prominent pro-independence politicians marched at the head of the group, including Catalan government official Francesc Homs,

Adeje planning major spruce-up of beaches ANDRÉS Pérez Ramos, the Adeje Councillor responsible for beaches, has announced the development of a new Beach Improvement and Renovation plan.

“The Council sees this as a vital part of the local tourism offer,” he said. “The improvement of the borough’s beaches and bathing areas is a priority.” Ramos said the plan was to “ensure quality in the beaches to give an

extra push to the Costa Adeje destination”. He stressed: “Quality is vitally important and, with that in mind, we have an ambitious plan to modernise existing infrastructures, adapting them to meet the needs of today’s market.” The scheme will also ensure that lifeguard services are in place, as well as upgrading access to beaches. This includes ones for those with mobility difficulties - and renovating road and path signs - together with information panels along beach and bathing zones. Ramos also said the

Council was working on a series of improvements to the Troya and Fañabe beaches, which will include the creation of a sun-bathing zone for those with reduced mobility, alongside the adapted shower zone. Existing passages to the sea-shore will also be upgraded, “to make things easier for bathers and lifeguards in the case of emergencies”. Water-sport zones will be cordoned off properly, and motor and sail boats must observe the regulations. This, said Ramos, “will increase safety for bathers and ensure a better working practice for beaches, bathing areas and marinas”. He also said the Council will be looking at beach by-laws to ensure that there is a firm quality control of authorised activities throughout the year. The latter could see some changes in the current controls to ensure the quality of the tourist destination is guaranteed. The Councillor also said that the issue of resanding the Fañabe and Enramada beaches, and the introduction of sand on beaches mostly pebbled, was under consideration. It’s “a priority for his

department”, given the important part beaches play in attracting tourists, he said.

and the three top candidates in Junts pel Sí (Together for Yes), the secessionist bloc running in the 27th September elections: Raül Romeva, Muriel Casals and Carme Forcadell. Barcelona star Gerard Piqué was another famous face marching along. Friday was Day One of the campaign to regional elections on 27th September, which the regional premier is casting as a de facto plebiscite on independence. Conspicuously absent from the march was Josep Antoni Duran, leader of Democratic Union of Catalonia, a Catalanist party that ruled the region almost uninterruptedly for 37 years in tandem with Democratic Convergence of Catalonia, as CiU. Through his Twitter account, Duran called on Catalans to “defend the land” using

“dialogue, cohesion and common sense”. The CiU coalition broke up in June because of a disagreement over the independence drive, not supported by Duran. Meanwhile, the Spanish Government said that the Diada’s proindependence acts had become “a campaign event for [Artur] Mas”, because that Friday began the campaign for the regional elections on 27th September, which the regional premier is casting as a de facto plebiscite on independence. In a press conference with international media outlets, Mas reasserted that if his Junts pel Si bloc wins an absolute majority of seats in the Catalan parliament, he will feel legitimised to press on with his secessionist drive - even if, technically, he does not obtain a majority of votes.

Second chance for jobless youngsters

E D U C AT I O N, education, education is the wellused phrase and it has never been truer than now.

According to official figures, more than 11,000 unemployed Canarians under 30 have no schoolleaving qualifications. They are in the 16-24 age bracket and are a lost generation. In the Canaries at present, there are 33,700 schoolleavers who have never a found permanent job. Of these, 11,014 don’t have any qualifications, or have even passed any exam. The Ministry of Employment has published the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC), calling for projects that prioritise the inclusion of young, unemployed residents, who are registered with the National System of Youth Guarantee. In addition to the work experience they acquire, it is hoped that

the scheme will lead to a paid job. They will also receive training in key skills to enable them to obtain the Compulsory Secondary Education document (ESO). This was explained by the Minister, Patricia Hernandez, who specified that the Canarian Employment Service will provide 5.5 million euros, which is just over half of the investment needed, and that the project will be developed with the assistance of the Town Halls. In total, 1,467 people will be hired initially, of which 1,262 are young people under 30, who are unemployed and never had a qualification. The remaining 215 people are faculty and support staff. Previous editions of this programmes benefited the under-25s only. However, the new administration has understood that it is necessary to adjust the profile.

Student grants available for those not so well off ADEJE Council, which has just opened the application window for student grants, spends more than 150,000 euros in this area.

Those wishing to apply can do so now, and Education Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera says the main objective is to “guarantee equality of opportunity in access to education for the borough’s young people He added: “This money, granted by the local government, is destined for those less well off. We can never permit the situation to arise where a child cannot study simply because of financial constraints. “Last year, we allocated more than 150,000 euros in grant funds and we will probably exceed that sum this year.” Those wishing to apply for these second and third-level grants can find more information on www.adeje.es - or call into the education department in Adeje Cultural Centre for the

relevant information and forms. The grants, available for secondary students from year 3 upwards and into third level, are for those who have lived in Adeje for at least six months and are on the resident’s register. In the case of thirdlevel students, there are also grants available for living-away-from-home costs, books, material and registration, depending on family income and academic criteria, among other factors. More information in the council offices. Alonso Ferrera, referring to the start of term for infants and primary schools in the borough, said the work done to repair and renovate the education centres during the summer cost 40,000 euros.

Franco statue on its last legs THE demolition will soon be underway, finally, but at some cost. This week, Tenerife Cabildo’s Environment Ministry green-lit plans to demolish the “Las Raices” statue, commemorating the military uprising of 1936, as approved in full by the Corporation nearly eight years ago.

The Monument to Franco will be knocked down next month, and this work will involve a stunning cost of 4,000 euros. “At first we thought the cost would be 8,000 euros, but eventually

the cost will be lower,” said insular department director Jose Antonio Valbuena. The project chief confirmed that the objective is to overthrow the statue during October and treat the remains as any other waste, which means sending it to landfill, so that the possible preservation of any part of this enclave, set in the municipality of El

Rosario, can be redeveloped. To do this, the Ministry of Environment will produce a document for the Heritage Ministry, which will draft its own report on the matter and authorise a replacement for “Las Raices”. Valbuena said: “Once we have this document, we will proceed to demolition.” The fact that the city

council unanimously approved in 2008 a proposal for the withdrawal of this statue is remarkable. The current idea is for the future draft of a new project to restore the area as a natural environment, or create a park to remember the Civil War, without praising either side. The Minister stressed that since his department does not consider the statue to be of Cultural Interest (BIC), the protection of the area, rather than any objects, comes under its remit. In short the statue is not ‘listed’ so tear it down. This goes against the rubber-stamping on 23rd December, 1964, under the Franco dictatorship, that the statue WAS declared BIC. The times have certainly changed!

Candelaria Hospital ‘saves’ toddler’s life A TENERIFE holiday proved a Godsend to the parents of a 12-month-old girl, who had been struck down by toxic shock syndrome - a rare life -threatening complication just days after being the allclear to travel by her local hospital in Dundee, Scotland.

Emily Brown’s chances of survival were said to be 50-50 when she was rushed into intensive care at Candelaria Hospital. There, she spent four days, and a further week recovering before being taken home. Days before this, the baby daughter of Michelle and Gary Brown had been released from Ninewells Hospital. She

had just celebrated her first birthday when she suffered bacterial tonsillitis and developed a high temperature. Gary claimed she was cleared for travel by the hospìtal and has now complained to NHS Tayside about their child’s lack of treatment. She had been taken to the hospital, lying limp, with a temperature of 39C and a body rash. The parents, who were given antibiotics for her, are convinced their daughter would have died had they not gone to Tenerife. Gary said: “Emily would have died. Ninewells just sent her

home - they didn’t do anything.” He added: “Within hours, Candelaria Hospital rushed her into intensive care and told us our daughter might die. They said she had a less than 50% chance. I still burst into tears just thinking about it.” The couple say a Ninewells’ doctor sent them away after three hours at the hospital on 29th November last year, without conducting tests. They claim they were also told their baby was safe to travel and would be okay in a few days. Michelle said: “It was horrible. She came up in a rash and she was

so limp, but they told us to take her away. We were concerned about going on holiday, but they said she would be fine.” The couple have since complained to NHS Tayside, which responded by letter, saying: “We are sorry that you feel your daughter didn’t get the best possible treatment, but I can assure you everything possible was done.” But angry Gary added: “If they’d done their job properly, none of this would have happened. It was total negligence.” Ninewells is under the jurisdiction of NHS Tayside, which added: “Due to patient confidentiality, we are unable to comment on matters relating to individual patients. “We would encourage Mr and Mrs Brown to contact our Complaints and Advice Team again so that we may further discuss their concerns.”

Tourism and agriculture, and how they are linked ADEJE Council will next week host a course of events and talks examining the joint role of tourism and agriculture in the borough.

The editor says...

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Its objective is to generate interest and debate about how to promote the local agricultural countryside as part of the tourism offer.

The future is bright... IT has been quite a week, and by now I’m sure you have read the news on Page Four. Oasis Fm is moving to a new, fully-licensed frequency, and it safeguards the future of our local radio station. Obviously, I have a massive interest in this as I am the station manager and weekday breakfast presenter, as well as being Editor of this newspaper. But I can safely say that Oasis Fm has enriched the lives of our expat community, and more than served the needs of the British holiday-maker. To fully understand the impact OFM has made, you have to remember what it was like beforehand. The history of English-language radio in Tenerife has been well-documented, and I will get around to writing the warts-and-all book one day. Of course, we had stations here pre-1997, and I was involved with setting up TF1, which then became Waves Fm in 1994. It was hard, hard work. There were a million problems to overcome and, in fact, we first broadcast

from the owner’s garage! In 1996, John and Chris Elkington became involved in the project, which would bear fruit in August 1997, when we launched Oasis Fm. And we have been broadcasting ever since. Of the many things they did, the biggest tool they gave the station was a commitment to the future. Every business has its ups and downs, its glory days and rough patches. However Oasis Fm always found a way to keep going without ever dropping the standard, or taking its eye off the ball. Competitors came and, normally, swiftly went! We always had the ear of the community, the loyalty and respect. Over the years, this was mirrored by those who matter on this tiny Island. The mantra has been to work with councils, governments and visionaries. They could see what we were doing, and where we wanted to go with the community. And after 19 years, it all led to one glorious moment this week: Oasis Fm 106.3 the ONLY licensed English-language radio station in Spain. It’s something of which our community should be proud.

Esther Rivero Varga, Councillor for Rural Development, said: “Adeje has been working in this area for a number of years with, for instance, the opening of the Farmers Market. “The next step is, precisely, to examine the working relationship between the rural countryside and the economic motor that is tourism. “We are clear about the aims: create synergies and establish zones and

mutual platforms for business development and, thus, increase our tourism offer and experience for visitors.” The courses and events are aimed particularly at those working in the tourism sector, guides and information personnel in tourism, those who promote rural overnight stays, and those in public administration working with the public. The event is being organised by members of

Tenerife Cabildo Agriculture and Rural Tourism Department, alongside Turismo de Tenerife and Adeje Council. It runs from Monday (21st Sept) to Friday and will also see participants completing practical workshops with local experts, away from the course base, which is the Costa Adeje Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA) . Record-breaking airports sky-high with passengers MILLIONS of travellers have been absolutely pouring in and out of Spain, as last month’s record figures demonstrated.

No fewer than 24,001,019 passengers passed through the country’s network of airports in August, consolidating the immense

volume seen over the last 22 months. Of the total figure, 17,334,261 passengers travelled on international flights, which was a 3.9% increase on August 2014. National passenger numbers rose 6,598,650 - a 7% increase compared to the same month last year. Madrid-Barajas will have a big smile on its face, having proved itself to be the

Spain’s busiest airport. In August, it experienced the greatest passenger volume in the network, with 4,550,487 people passing through, adding up to a 14% rise on August 2014. The numbers have been growing there for 19 straight months - since February 2014. Barcelona-El Prat also showed strong figures, as did AlicanteElche and the Balearic

Islands’ three airports, all beating their own records for passenger volume in August. The accumulated data from the first eight months of 2015 shows a 5.2% increase in terms of passenger numbers, coming in at around 140.1 million people. That translated into a 13.5% rise, followed by these airports: Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas (12%), Seville (10.1%) and Santiago (9.2%).

Such global musical festivals as Summer Jam, I Love Music, Ritmos Del Mundo and others are held there, as well as sporting events, like Dunkerbeck Challenge, a surf competition. Among the many celebrities who have enjoyed Siam Park and its attractions are Pedrito, Michel Rodríguez, Javier Bardem, Sergio Rodríguez; Marcelo, Di María, Afrojack and Steve Aoki, who says Siam Park is one of his favourite places in the world. This year, Siam Park has again surprised loyal followers with its new and spectacular attraction Singha, an aquatic roller-coaster, created in collaboration with Proslide, a renowned expert in iconic water attractions. This is a revolutionary and unique global attraction, which guarantees an incredible adrenaline rush never before experienced. It is more than

240m in length, with high-velocity curves and 14 changes of direction, which guarantee adventurers some amazing sensations. As it belongs to Loro Parque, known for its tradition in quality, Siam Park’s standards are just as high, regarding environmental awareness. And it uses newly-developed technologies in every aspect, giving absolute priority to quality. These philosophies, as well as a strong, responsible attitude towards the environment, represent the main factors for Siam Park’s leading position in the world. Med Diet could help to ward off breast cancer THE Mediterranean Diet, long acknowledged as the secret to a long, healthy life, is also said to protect against heart disease, Alzheimer’s and depression.

Now, though, researchers believe that, bolstered with extra virgin olive oil, it could help fend off breast cancer. Their new study found eating the diet was associated with a “relatively lower” risk of breast cancer. Spanish women who followed the diet reduced their risk of the disease by 68%, compared with women told to follow a low-fat diet. The Mediterranean consists of plant-based foods such as vegetables, legumes, fruit, nuts, seeds and olives, lots of extra virgin olive oil, fish, and moderate red wine intake. It also involves a low consumption of processed food, processed carbohydrates, sweets, chocolate and red meat. The researchers recruited 4,282 women, aged 60-80, who faced a high risk of developing a cardiovascular disease, including heart problems or a stroke. They were randomly assigned to the Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil, the Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts, or the control diet, in which they were advised to reduce their intake of fat. Those following the Mediterranean diet were given one litre per week of their extra virgin olive oil for themselves and their families, or 30gm of mixed nuts, made up of 15gms of walnuts, 7.5gm of hazelnuts and 7.5gm of almonds. The research team found that women eating a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil showed a 68% relatively lower risk of malignant

breast cancer than those allocated to the low-fat diet. Women eating a Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts showed a reduction in their risk that was insignificant, compared with women in the group told to reduce their fat intake. The study team noted a number of limitations in their study, including that breast cancer was not the only disease suffered by the women recruited for the study. The scientists said the study could not establish whether the beneficial effect they observed could be attributed mainly to olive oil or its consumption within the context of the Mediterranean diet. But lead author Dr Miguel Martinez-Gonzalez, of Spain’s University of Navarra, added: “The results suggest a beneficial effect of a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil, in the primary prevention of breast cancer. “Preventative strategies represent the most sensible approach against cancer.” He added: “The intervention studied in the trial - following a Mediterranean diet with olive oil - provides a useful

scenario for preventing breast cancer because it can be carried out in primary health care centres, and offers a range of beneficial effects on different health outcomes. “Nevertheless, these results need confirmation by long-term studies with a higher number of incident cases.” Dr Mitchell Katz, a deputy editor of JAMA Internal Medicine, where the study was published, said of the findings: “Of course, no study is perfect. “This one has a small number of outcomes only 35 incident cases of breast cancer; the women were not all screened for breast cancer with mammography; they were not blinded to the type of diet they were receiving, and all were white, post-menopausal and at high risk for cardiovascular disease” He added: “Still, consumption of a Mediterranean diet, which is based on plant foods, fish and extra virgin olive oil, is known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and is safe. It may also prevent breast cancer. “We hope to see more emphasis on Mediterranean diet to reduce cancer and cardiovascular disease and improve health and well-being.”

Spain no longer allies, insists Gibraltar chief TENSIONS between Spain and Gibraltar are at an all-time low, following an accusation by Fabian Picardo, Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, that “reckless” Madrid authorities are doing all they can “to create bad feeling”.

He maintains the two factions are no longer allies, and that Spain is putting lives in danger off the Gibraltar coast because it has “no respect” for British sovereignty of the island’s territorial waters, His comments follow a series of recent altercations between Spanish police boats and local fishermen in the Gibral-

tar Straits. The Guardia Civil was accused of firing shots during a dispute with a pleasure boat last month in the latest in a series of incursions close to the British Overseas Territory. Outspoken Mr Picardo added: “It demonstrates to us that Spain is not an ally; it demonstrates to us that Spain has no respect for the jurisdiction or sovereignty of British Gibraltar territorial waters, and it demonstrates to us that the founding principles of a good, strong relationship and partnership are not there. “She is not trying to assert her rights in a peaceful way at a tribunal - she is putting people’s lives in danger by shooting live rounds.” And he claimed that Spain had abandoned talks aimed at easing tensions. While Brit-

ain and Gibraltar were willing to talk in trilateral discussions, he said Spain simply “got up and left”. His remarks follow an announcement that Gibraltar’s National Day (10th Sept) would be dedicated to the “record-breaking” Queen Elizabeth. Picardo, inviting Her Majesty to visit the Rock, said The Queen would be “more welcome” on their streets than she would be anywhere else in the world. “We, the people of Gibraltar, are perhaps the only ones in her reign who have chosen to remain British on two occasions - and on both times, in 1967 and 2002, she was The Queen,” he added. “So we have chosen her. She has not been imposed on us - we have chosen her twice.

Not once, twice!” Thousands of locals wearing their national colours of red and white descended on the town square to celebrate their National Day last Thursday In August, Spain was accused of “clear provocation” after it allowed a Russian hunter-killer submarine to dock less than 18 miles from Gibraltar. Days earlier, Spanish patrol boats circled a Gibraltar-registered pleasure boat, angering the Foreign Office. In a similar incursion by Spain into British waters earlier in August, a Guardia Civil boat rammed a Gibraltar police boat. And Spanish police flew a helicopter over the popular Sandy Bay beach area of the British territory in an “extremely dangerous” stunt.

Moroccan man held on double murder charge MOROCCAN man, suspected of murdering a former British Olympic diver and his wife at their villa in Spain, was last week arrested.

The bodies of Peter and Jean Tarsey, both 77, were discovered at their Xaló home, near Benidorm, in March. A Guardia Civil spokesman confirmed last Friday that the arrest had been made the previous day in connection with the killings. He said: “A Moroccan

Recycling a 12-grand bike … for 120 euros! LITTLE did the chap who pinched a flashy racing bike realise it was worth a fortune! And that’s why the 12,000-euro machine was up for sale for just 120 euros in a second-hand shop in Malaga. Police inspecting the shop for suspected stolen goods spotted the bicycle’s “exceptional technical characteristics”. Not altogether surprising, perhaps, because it belonged to an unnamed rider competing for an Australian team in the Vuelta a Espana race around

Spain. It was returned to its owner on Sunday, the final day of the race. A Malaga resident “with a long police record” had sold the bicycle to the shop, and a jokey cop wrote on the official PoliceTwitter account (in Spanish): “We are going to offer a jersey with stripes on to the person who stole the Orica Greenedge bike. His race ends in jail.” The Vuelta arrived in Malaga on 24th August, on the third stage of the three-week race, which finished in Madrid on Sunday.

man has been arrested, but we are not authorised to give out any other details because the judge has placed a temporary gag order on proceedings. The spokesman said he could not confirm reports that the arrested man was a drug dealer and that officers had found a gun. But the couple were killed with a single bullet each while locked in each other’s arms on their sofa in their de-

tached country home. Mr Tarsey was shot in the back of the neck, and his wife in the face in what had all the hallmarks of a double execution. He competed for Great Britain at the Melbourne Summer Olympics in 1956 and for England at two Commonwealth Games. The couple had been living in Spain for about 20 years but are thought to have been from west London originally.

Spanish Queen is quite a doll! THE Queen of Spain has been replicated as a stylish, royal “Barbie” doll for an exhibition in Madrid this weekend.

The sought-after doll, absolutely not for sale or auction, has been dressed in a perfect replica of the outfit worn by Queen Letizia for a dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, in London’s Hyde Park, prior to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Letizia, 42, will later be sent the doll as a gift and a token of appreciation for her work on behalf of the Spanish people. The plastic replica will take pride of place at the Fashion Doll Show today (Friday), tomorrow and Sunday at the Ayre Gran Hotel Colón in Madrid. The miniature doll has her own version of the beautiful, sleeveless grey gown, designed by Felipe Varela, who is a favourite of the Spanish Queen. It also has her green eyes, prominent cheekbones and slim nose, while her dark hair is swept back in a similar chignon - a fancy French word for a simple bun! The “Barbie” was created by Russian company AFD Group, which has also fashioned dolls of Elizabeth Taylor, Whitney Houston and Lady Gaga. The wife of Spain’s

King Philip VI is considered a fashion and style icon, whose looks are scrutinised at every public event she attends. The Fashion Dolls Collectors Association (Asociacion de Coleccionistas de Fashion Dolls) said: “Artists have wanted to make this homage to the Queen because they like her very much. They consider her elegant and they appreciate her. “That is why the doll will be showcased during the event, but will be given to Queen Letizia afterwards as a gift and will not be available for bidding on our eBay auction website.” There will be exhibitions, lectures, workshops and other activities related to the world of plastic dolls and their forays into the world of fashion at the event. Vasilie Barbier, the artist who designed the replica, said: “When we went to Spain to present the doll of Sara Montiel for a charity auction last year, we were fascinated with Spain. “We love the history and the culture of the country. Before leaving, we saw the pictures of the coronation of King Philip VI, and we loved the Queen’s beauty and elegance. The Russian company decided to create the doll as a “symbol of respect for her work, focusing on social issues, children’s rights, culture and education, refined beauty, elegance and style”.

No wonder our Health Service feels so poorly THE numbers do not lie. The sum allocated by the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) each year for investment in the health infrastructure has collapsed in recent years. And that is the reason why some services - emergency and hospitals - are in a bad way. Between 2007 and 2013, the drop in these funds, for investment and infrastructure, exceeded 70%; it went from 132 million euros spent to just 32.5m. In addition, the total health budget shrank to about 400m. The figures were confirmed by Health Minister Jesus Morera, who revealed the Canary Islands’ bad news at a press conference. To overcome these shortcomings, Morera proposed the design of a Plan for the Improvement of Health Infrastructure in the archipelago, linked to the development of a new Canarias Health Plan. However, he had no choice but to admit that the financial uncertainty associated

with cuts from the Spanish State remains an obstacle to progress and of the document, he admitted: “It does not have a clear timetable.” This uncertainty made Morera hesitate about a start date for building the Emergency Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC), and he spoke only of the possibility that work would begin before the end of the year. However, he said a project already prepared “is in the process of procurement of works through open competition”. His department is also working on expanding Candelaria Hospital’s emergency department and he said: “The process for the procurement of works has begun on the draft of a new building.” The procedure, he recalled, was discussed with the Architects’ Association, and added: “The current increase in building is about 3,000sq.m and will cost about 10 million euros.”

Mighty tribute for Britain’s war-time heroes of the skies FORTY World War II spitfires, together with Hurricanes and Blenheims which defended the skies in 1940, took part in Tuesday’s fly-past to mark the Battle of Britain’s 75th anniversary. The planes, taking off in groups of four from Goodwood Aerodrome in West Sussex, flew across the south of England in a spectacular display, over towns that were bombed by Nazi aircraft and the airfields which played such a key role in the battle. Prince Harry, a guest of honour, had been expected to take part in the fly-past in a twoseater Spitfire. But he gave up his seat at the last minute after one of the other Spitfires had mechanical problems. His gesture - typical of the Prince - meant that 95-year-old veteran Tom Neil, a former wing com-

mander and Battle of Britain Hurricane and Spitfire pilot, joined veterans of the battle in the Spitfire allocated to Harry Harry also wanted to make sure that former para Nathan Forster and RAF corporal Alan Robinson, who won their places on a Spitfire scholarship training programme, could also be part of the special event. And what an event, with aircraft being flown to Britain from around the world, including the US, to take part in the largest fly-past of Spitfires since World War II. In London a service of commemoration was held at St Paul’s Cathedral, attended by Prime Minister David Cameron and other political leaders, along with various dignitaries. Jeremy Corbyn, newlyelected Labour Party leader, said his mother served as an air-raid warden and his father in the Home Guard during the war. Mr Corbyn, who has previously said he

would scrap Trident and raised the possibility of leaving NATO, paid tribute to those who risked their lives in the battle. He added: “Like that whole generation, they showed tremendous courage and determination to defeat fascism. The heroism of the Royal Air Force in the Battle of Britain is something to which we all owe an enormous debt of gratitude.” Although the Luftwaffe attacked England throughout the summer months of 1940, it was on this day, 75 years ago, that Hitler decided, in the face of fierce RAF opposition, to call off Operation Sea Lion - the Nazi plan to invade Britain. Although the RAF was vastly outnumbered by the German enemy, the Spitfires and Hurricanes were more than a match. Radar, a relatively new invention, gave the British an advantage because it could scan 120 miles out to sea. Some 30,000 human spotters reported the

path of German waves in what was the world’s first fully-co-ordinated air-defence system, giving the RAF an early warning that the Germans were coming. They would report how many aircraft there were, how high they were and where they were heading. At night-time, it was done by sound only. The human spotters became known as the eyes and ears of the Royal Air Force. Young men went into the skies with little experience of flying the aircraft - some straight out of school. They were often scrambled to their planes many times in a single day to face the enemy. Men joined squadrons and died before anyone got to know their name. Those who landed alive in the English Channel would drown in the cold seas. There was no rescue for them. One RAF officer at the time described it as a game of tennis: The Germans kept serving ... the British just had to defend. As soon as Spitfires landed, they were refuelled and readied for take-off again. On 15th September, 1940, Prime Minister Winston Churchill was 60ft underground in the command bunker at RAF Uxbridge, outside London. He saw all the lights on the board turn red, indicating that all the Spitfire and Hurricane squadrons were up in the air. Churchill turned to the RAF Officer in charge and asked: “How many do we have in reserve?” “None,” came the answer. Around 30 Battle of Britain pilots, still alive, are known as “The Few” after Churchill remarked in his official car on leaving RAF Uxbridge: “Never, in the field of human conflict, has so much been owed by so many to so few.” Those Few were honoured on Tuesday.

Pussy Galore, for lucky Bond again SOME 51 years after the death of James Bond author Ian Fleming, an official novel about the superBrit spy has been published, featuring one of the most famous girls of the entire series.

Trigger Mortis, set two weeks after the iconic Goldfinger story, was written by Anthony Horowitz, using previously unpublished material from Fleming, who created the spy series in 1953. The story starts with Bond in bed with a woman who, it turns out, is Pussy Galore. However, like many Bond girls, her days might be numbered. And the plot unfolds with a Fleming premise that Bond is sent to Germany’s dangerous Nürburgring race track, where he attempts to foil a plot to kill a Brit-

ish racing driver. However, the spy soon stumbles upon another scheme, which threatens the entire world. Well, it wouldn’t be Bond otherwise, would it? Horowitz said: “This is the first book that’s actually looked at what happens to a Bond Girl once the bed has been made and curtains have been drawn, as it were, so that’s something quite new.” Goldfinger was Fleming’s seventh book in the series, and he went on to write 14 in total. Since his death in 1964, six authors have taken on the series - with varying degrees of success. Barry Forshaw, book and film critic, said:

“The history of pastiche Bonds after Ian Fleming is a chequered one. The very first one is very good, and then there were some not-so-good ones, some that don’t work. “There were various attempts to make Bond a modern, new man, so he gives up cigarettes, looks after his health and has fewer sexual conquests. “The ones that seem to work best are this new one and Sebastian Faulks’ novel (Devil May Care), that put Bond in period and make him a modern man of the Fifties and Sixties.” The film series has enjoyed a boost in recent years since the introduction of Daniel Craig

as Bond. The last film, Skyfall, became the highest-grossing film of all time at the UK box office in 2012, and next month’s Spectre is one of the most-anticipated films of the year. The recent films have been credited for their throwback style with fewer modern gadgets, a more rugged Bond and less of the computer-generated effects. Horowitz, who has attempted to capture the essence of the franchise in this new book, says: “Overall, I’ve tried to write a book that is, at once, completely familiar and could have come from the pen of Ian Fleming, but also an original thriller at the same time.”

Stunner as Aussies have fourth PM in two years MALCOLM Turnbull is the new Prime Minister of Australia - the fourth in little over two years and the 29th in all - after winning his head-tohead challenge against leader Tony Abbott. Turnbull’s Liberal Party colleagues voted 54-44 to replace Abbott during Monday’s surprise ballot. And, despite division in his party, he is adamant he has what it takes to lead a “very strong government”. He reassured people: “There’s been a change of Prime Minister, but we are a very, very strong government, a very strong country with a great potential, and we will realise that potential by working very hard together.” He added: “This is a turn of events I did not expect, I have to tell you, but it’s one that I’m privileged to undertake and one that I’m certainly up to.” Shortly before Turnbull was sworn in, a stunned Abbott spoke for the first time since his sudden ousting, warning that the per-

sistent volatility in Australia’s government could hurt the nation’s standing on the global stage. “Australia has a role to play in the struggles of the wider world the cauldron of the Middle East and security in the South China Sea and elsewhere,” he said. “I fear that none of this will be helped if the leadership instability that’s plagued other countries continues to taint us.” Turnbull later had to meet with his coalition government to thrash out a new agreement with the National Party to replace the one put in place by his predecessor. Australian media reported that the agreement is thought to contain a series of promises to deliver more for people in rural communities, which make up the majority of the Nationals’ support. Many conservative Nationals were upset at the removal of Abbott, who is seen as more right of centre than his successor.

By Mariano Zunino Siri

I HAVE received an email from one of our readers, which really is worth discussing because it can affect so many people who pay community fees. I am on the management committee of a large complex, on which one-third of owners are debtors. Any debtor who owes more than 500 euros after three months is taken to Court. We also have a payment scheme for those in debt but in

genuine hardship. But many debtors are playing the system because Court cases take so long. Have you any suggestions or ideas to offer which would legally force these debtors to pay what they owe? And is it possible for you to feature this in the Canarian Weekly? Thank you, D I have written about these Community problems in previous columns. But in any case, it is a good idea to repeat them. Unfortunately, though, there is no other solution other than take the debtors to Court. Those owners who do not pay their dues cause many problems to the Community and the other owners who are, in fact, all up to date and are financing the nonpayers. For instance, the Com-

munity pays for maintenance of the pool, which can be used by all owners, including those who are in arrears for at least one year. If the debtors represent a big percentage, the Community has no money to pay for the electricity or water supplies of its area. And if

the electricity is cut off, there is no distinction between payers and debtors. There is a legal solution to this problem: sue the debtors. But before starting legal action, it is advisable to send every debtor a lawyer’s letter of requirement. Some debtors

will surely pay after the requirement; others will not and they should be taken to Court. After the claim there would be several possibilities: *The debtor pays immediately to avoid serious consequences and more expenses. Remember that the legal fees, interests and costs paid in advance by the Community should be recovered *The debtor tries to negotiate a deal. In this case, the Community should consider the advantages and disadvantages of accepting partial payments from an irregular payer, taking into account that any deal should include old and new instalments *The debtor does not pay. In this case, the Community should attach the property (“embargo”) at the Land Registry (after the

judgement) to force the sale by auction. A preventive attachment (previous to the judgement) would be also possible. The Community’s first step would be to call an extraordinary meeting to approve the debt of every apartment, bearing in mind that, logically, non-paying owners do not have a right to vote at the meeting. The Certificate of the agreements approving the debts would be handed in as written evidence at Court. The worst thing to do is to keep arms crossed, awaiting the debtor’s decision. Mariano E. Houston lives on AN American entertainment company is developing a 3D moving image of the late Whitney Houston in the hope of taking the production on tour next year.

Hologram USA, which is working with the Houston estate, has patented a “high-tech version” of a 16th century illusion called Pepper’s Ghost. It can cost millions of dollars to develop an image of a deceased star, says the company, which told the BBC that members of the public often inquire about being turned into a 3D moving image themselves. But Owen Phillips, head of Hologram marketing, said: “I’m not sure if any of them have pursued it. For most people, the cost is forbidding.” The traditional Pepper’s Ghost illusion involves foil and glass, to which Hologram USA has added a patented blend of computer-generated images (CGI), moving parts and audio material. In its stable of socalled “holograms” are classic acts such as Pat-

sy Cline, Frank Sinatra and Liberace. Boring celebrities need not apply! “We look for stars with great stories,” said Mr Phillips. “There needs to be a strong narrative around the shows.” The firm actually works with living subjects occasionally. It was behind a Julian Assange projection, beamed into a US conference from his confinement in London’s Ecuadorian Embassy, and a performance by rapper Chief Keef beamed into a festival in Chicago, where the artist is banned in person. “For a live hologram, like for a chief executive to beam into a meeting, you just need a camera and a green screen,” said Mr Phillips. It’s expensive for the presentation process, but there’s no development

expense.” However if the person is dead, the team must be given access to a lot of past material “The participation of the estate is crucial - not only to do with their approval but also to provide access to material that may never have been seen before, perhaps because it may not be presentable from a quality standpoint on its own,” said Mr Phillips. The Houston family is supporting the digital reincarnation of the late singer. Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister and president of her estate, said: “It’s a great opportunity for her fans to see a reinvention of one the most celebrated female artists in history. “And to continue a legacy of performances that will not be forgotten in years to come. I look forward to the partnership.”

‘Lung cancer may be down to bad luck, not smoking’ A LEADING expert believes that at least 25% of all lung cancer is down to “bad luck” and totally unrelated to smoking.

Surgeon Eric Lim says non-smokers are just as likely to get a common type of lung cancer called adenocarcinoma. This type, which develops from mucus-making cells in the linings of the airways, accounts for between a quarter and a half of the 40,000 lung cancer cases diagnosed in Britain every year. Mr Lim looked at

more than 2,000 cases in which patients had undergone “resections” of the lung to remove tumours at London’s Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals between 2008 and 2014. He found that adenocarcinoma had occurred “in the same proportion in smokers and nonsmokers”. He added: “In other words, people who never smoked are no less likely to be diagnosed with adenocarcinoma than smokers. And that could just be down to bad luck.” By contrast, smokers were much more likely to be diagnosed with

another common form of lung cancer, called squamous non-small cell lung cancer, he explained. But Mr Lim, cancer research expert at the NHS trust, which runs the two hospitals, stressed that the idea that adenocarcinoma is not caused by smoking was only a theory for now. “We are just putting it out that there is a possibility that one type of lung cancer actually happens, whether you are a smoker or not. But we need to stop seeing lung cancer as a purely smokers’ disease.”

Joining Jools on the first show of the series are Foals, premiering their fourth album What Went Down. Jools’s old friends Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford reformed Squeeze a little while ago and now they are back with their fourteenth studio album From the Cradle to the Grave, in which they reflect on the pleasures and pitfalls of middle-age. Louisville’s My Morning Jacket are led by singersongwriter Jim James and remain as stubbornly original and yet in thrall to the alternative AOR of the 70s on their latest album The Waterfall. California’s Rickie Lee Jones will be accompanied by Jools and musicians on a couple of songs with that unmistakable Louisiana groove. Last but by no means least welcome back Disclosure, the Londonbased songwriterproducer brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence, who are bringing along a couple of very talented UK singers in the shape of Sam Smith and Kwabs.

The discovery of China’s Terracotta Army in 1974 captured the imagination of the world. But that first dig only revealed a fraction of this enormous and extraordinary treasure. Since then, scientists have resumed work on the site, and their research has turned up a series of discoveries about the warriors and the people who made them over two millennia ago. With exclusive access to pioneering research conducted by University College London and the Terracotta Army Museum, this documentary reveals those secrets. The film shows the true extent of the site and number of warriors, and that the weapons carried by the warriors were full military grade. There are insights into how the figures were made, including revolutionary 3D computer modelling of the warriors’ heads, challenges the traditional explanation and changes our understanding of how sophisticated technology and society were in ancient China.

Countdown To Life: The Extraordinary Making choice Of You BBC2, 21.00

Presented by Michael Mosley, episode 2 focuses on the middle months in the womb - the time when we become unique individuals. Told through a series of surprising stories it explores why none of us are truly identical. For the first ten weeks of pregnancy our biological sex is hidden. In this episode we encounter a remarkable village in the Dominican Republic, where the sex determination process in the womb doesn’t always run to plan for its inhabitents. Testosterone influences the mind as well as the body, which Michael sees when he meets seven year-old daughter Mati, who feels that she was born into the wrong body. Michael explores how this remarkable human diversity is so crucial to our species, but that these complex processes can occasionally go wrong. Amongst these instances we meet Oliver, one of the one in 1,000 babies who arrive with a cleft lip; and Cheryl, a member of just a handful of families in the world who have no fingerprints.

Britain: As Seen on ITV ITV1, 20.00 Episode four spans 60 years of ITV archive to look at the hobbies and pastimes that kept Britain busy in the days before the internet and boxed sets. Clips include a 24 hour rock n’ roll dance marathon from 1960’s Warwickshire; a report on a group of Western fanatics who wanted to create the Wild West in the North West; and a feature on a Staffordshire birdman whose 1970s hobby failed to take off. To help celebrate ITV’s 60th anniversary Britain: As Seen on ITV tells the story of our changing nation through extraordinary real-life footage seen on our screens over the last 60 years. From our changing attitudes to fashion and the food on our plates, pop music and the weather, our homes and our hobbies, the series features rare and forgotten footage often not seen on television since it first aired on ITV, in many cases decades ago. Put together, the clips – largely from news items and documentaries – paint an often quirky picture of how all of our lives have undergone an extraordinary transformation since ITV first hit our screens in 1955.

Britain’s Biggest Adventures with Bear Grylls ITV1, 21.00

From the giddy heights of its craggy peaks to its tumbling torrents, Bear meets some remarkable creatures and races the fastest bird on the planet, before a squeeze through its underbelly leads to a living nightmare. Bear’s adventure starts at one of the most impressive limestone formations in the world, the magnificent amphitheatre of Malham Cove. He meets geographer Dr Lynda Yorke who tells Bear that, 350-millions years ago, the high limestone pavement they are standing on was in fact under a tropical ocean, that was pushed upwards by volcanic eruptions and north by plate tectonics She explains that as the sea creatures died, they dropped to the bottom of the ocean where over time they became compacted as more and more creatures died, and eventually they formed the rock on which Bear is standing. Bear goes on to discover that what really shaped the current landscape was the power of ice and water, as 20,000-years ago during the last Ice Age vast glaciers carved their way through the Dales. When these glaciers melted raging rivers ripped the limestone apart creating the valleys and mighty scars of the stunning terrain. The crowning glory sits on top of Malham Cove, where the lunar landscape is a fantastic example of a limestone pavement.

Don’t Panic: How To End Poverty In 15 Years

18th September - 24th September 2015

Wed n esday

BBC2, 20.00

World famous Swedish statistical showman Professor Hans Rosling is back on BBC Two with another high tech feast of facts and figures, as he turns his attention to poverty and the extraordinary target of eradicating extreme poverty from the entire world. In the week the United Nations presents its new goals for global development, Don’t Panic: How To End Poverty In 15 Years, looks at the number one goal for the world: eradicating what is called ‘extreme or absolute poverty’ – the condition of around a billion people, currently measured as living on less than $1.25 a day - for the first time in human history. Rosling will once again use holographic-style projection technology to wield his iconic bubble graphs and income mountains to present an upbeat assessment of our ability to achieve that goal by 2030. Eye-opening, funny and data-packed performances make Rosling one of the world’s most sought-after and influential public speakers. For Don’t Panic: How To End Poverty In 15 Years he innovatively brings to life the challenge of eradicating extreme poverty worldwide, interweaving dramatic statistics with powerful human stories from families in Malawi and Cambodia.

The Ascent Of Woman BBC2, 21.00

In this final episode, Dr. Amanda Foreman looks at the role of women in the revolutions that remade the modern world. From the French Revolution of the 18th Century to the Arab Spring in the 21st, Amanda asks whether any of the modern revolutions actually delivered on their promises to women. As she traces the key movements to achieve social change, Amanda argues that women have played an indispensable role, often only to have their hopes betrayed as one patriarchal hierarchy is replaced by another. The remedy, she claims, is to create a different kind of social revolution - one of gender equality. On her journey travelling from east to west, Amanda asks Pussy Riot (pictured) whether Russia under Putin can ever learn from its mistakes, and meets Lindiwe Mazibuko, former Leader of South Africa’s Democratic Alliance party, and Phumzile MlamboNgcuka, UN Undersecretary General and Executive Director of UN Women, who both argue that the future of Africa lies with its women. At the end of her extraordinary journey through history, Amanda concludes that the most critical issue to address in the 21st century is the inclusion of women. While there is evidence of radical change happening right now, she argues that to reach an age of full participation there has to be a woman-led revolution that unleashes the potential of all individuals.

Midwinter of the Spirit ITV1, 21.00

Anna Maxwell Martin takes on the role of Merrily Watkins, a single mother who is not your average country vicar in this three-part drama. Merrily’s newly acquired training has put her on the dark side of the pulpit. She has become one of the few women priests working as an exorcist – a job increasingly mistrusted by the modern church and rarely talked about, even though it operates in virtually every diocese in the UK. David Threlfall takes on the role of Rev Huw Owen, a deliverance ministry tutor and Merrily’s mentor. Merrily is deeply human in her doubts and scepticism, but her knowledge of the paranormal underworld brings her to the notice of local police who need her advice in the investigation of a grisly murder. Merrily has been through the mill emotionally of late, losing her unfaithful husband Sean in a car crash and seeking refuge in a job despised by her 16-year-old daughter, Jane, whose rejection of her mother’s beliefs leads her into the path of danger.

Gregg and Chris are in Hatfield, Hertfordshire with the Parsons family. Mum Clare and dad Richard juggle work with looking after two young kids, six-year-old Aston and Ava, who is four, so they have found themselves in a rather unusual rut. Help brave Sue’s cancer-fund bash

WHEN Sue Furness was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2013, she spent almost seven months in Candelaria Hospital, suffering many complications - and several weeks in Intensive Care. Naturally, Sue, 65, who lives at El Medano, was stunned. But she was so impressed with her treatment and the kindness of staff. “I received the most excellent care,” she said. “Medical terms can be incredibly difficult to understand - and even more so in Spanish, which is not my first language. “But a friend in the UK suggested that I looked at the Macmillan Cancer Support website. I did and it’s brilliant.

“It offered invaluable understanding of

my Leukaemia and my current Myelodisplasia

Syndrome, which means I still have to spend seven days of every month back in hospital.” From her Candelaria Hospital bed, Sue told Canarian Weekly: “I really felt as though I ought to hold a fund-raiser for Macmillan and at first, I considered a sponsored hang-glide, but I felt it would be a bit risky at my age. “Then, when I saw the Macmillan World´s Biggest Coffee Morning advertised on UK television, I wanted to take part and support this fantastic organisation. “It is a huge fund-raiser, in which people all over the UK will host coffee mornings next Friday (25th Sept), and I thought it would be

wonderful to join in with our own synchronised event in Tenerife. “The owners and staff of El Oso Restaurant, in the Plaza at El Medano, have kindly agreed to donate their time and venue for this incredible cause. And it would be an opportunity for you to see this new addition to El Medano´s cafe and bar scene. “Every coffee and cake shared helps Macmillan to be there for someone affected by cancer, from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.” Sue recommends that anyone with any form of cancer should log on to the Macmillan website, saying: “Everything is spelled out in plain Eng-

lish, and it a great comfort.” As has been her Spanish husband, Manuel Regueira Lopez, who is from Galicia. “We met while working at a hotel in England 20 years ago,” said Sue. “We were married on the beach in St Lucia five years ago, and he is my rock. He has been amazing throughout my illness. People forget just how hard it is for husbands or wives in circumstances like this … they go through hell!” If you would like to contribute to this worthiest of causes, join Sue next Friday morning in El Medano from 10am. Entertainment

18th September - 24th September 2015

By Jamie Droo EVERY year, when the Tenerife Entertainment Awards is in full swing, the question is always asked: “Why are there more nominees in the Compere category that in any other?” It is an easy category to define! A compere can be resident in a venue or can be there for just one night in the capacity of host or presenter for the evening’s entertainment. He or she is responsible for starting and finishing the entertainment, and presenting any publicised shows. Comperes will generally have a wide range of tasks throughout their tour of duty. It is their responsibility to give the audience a hook to stay in their venue for the evening. There are so many ways in which to do this, but it really comes down to how that person on stage engages the audience. Nine times out of 10 it is personality. A compere doesn’t have to be a fantastic singer, the funniest of comedians or even the best DJ. The compere is a jackof-all-trades and how he (or she) applies his skills is paramount to how well he engages the people in front of him.. Almost every venue employs a compere, and that is why there are

39 CW

COMPERES WITHOUT COMPARE

more comperes in their respective category than in any other. So, the organisers select the top 10% of those who are nominated rather than the top four. This year a lucky seven find themselves in that percentage. I will start with Adam Maggs, known as Maggsy, who has achieved great success as a compere since his arrival on the Island. He came to Tenerife with no agenda and just wanted to find his niche. He did just that! Maggsy had a style and ideas that nobody else had. He has built his reputation well and is now known as one of the Island’s top comperes. I know he will be thrilled to have been nominated and even more so to win and be recognised for

the hard work he has put in since he stepped off the plane. Every compere in this category has his/her his own style and nearly all come from stark backgrounds. For example Dion, who is now a resident host, started his entertainment career many years ago in mainland Spain as a party DJ. He then became a touring cabaret artiste here in Tenerife and had a show that celebrated Rock ‘n’ Roll music. His attire was not far from that of The Big Bopper, a Fifties star. He had the big blonde quiff, wore beetle-crushers and delivered the music of yesteryear to audiences every night. Nowadays, the quiff is now a part of yesteryear and Dion has taken the compere path. He has a

wealth of experience on the Tenerife stages, and he applies that to the crowds who flock to see him and the shows he presents. Another compere who has been here for years is Craig Shaw. He has been resident in one venue longer than any other in this category. I can say with no uncertainty that Craig has the biggest following of return customers on the Island. He has played a major role in his residency, making it one of the most popular entertainment venues in the area. Craig just has that likeability factor that which comes so naturally to him, and so many skills as a host that he has managed to polish and adapt to his particular venue and to his audi-

ence. They come back year after year mainly for him. There are two Craigs in this year’s Best Compere category, and the other one has also worked hard at building his audience over the years. It takes a great deal of commitment from one individual to dedicate himself to one venue, and Craig Hevern has done just that. He too, has a big following of return customers and is resident in one of the most popular karaoke and showbars in the South. I remember when Craig was just a tourist here and singing in a bar on the karaoke. And way back then, when he was knocking out Michael Buble’s Everything, I remember thinking, Wow. Craig has such a powerful voice and his repertoire has grown immensely since he started work as a compere. He clearly has a voice capable of being a cabaret singer, but he has chosen to apply that talent, along with his personality, to hosting the evening’s entertainment. The next compere I will mention is Michelle Minty. This young lady is a real Tenerife success story. Her family have been holidaying here since she was a young girl. She has sat in audiences over the years, watching the comperes of old in venues of old and is now living the dream and doing the job she has

longed to do for many years. Michelle has always been a good singer, with a natural gift that engages her audience. She has gained so much experience from watching Tenerife’s old and bold and, as a new name to the lineup of nominees in this category, Michelle and her family will be over the moon that her hard work has been recognised. Finally, Gary Nelson has been hosting venues for years here in Tenerife. He has not always been resident in one venue, but has gained a reputation as a reliable compere who has worked in some of the biggest venues here. He is able to sing almost any genre of music, has a big repertoire of songs and can hold a night on his own if there are no karaoke singers in the venue. Gary can also ad-lib very well and keep an audience with comedic banter by working with them and generating entertainment from those in the seats in front of him. There is such diversity in the comperes mentioned, and all have great support from their respective venues. It will be no surprise whoever wins the award this year because they all are rewarded every night with bums on seats. Whatever the outcome, I’m sure it will be won with a narrow majority.

Niu Cafe, Los Cristianos

A breath of fresh air As its name suggests, the Niu Cafe is a new, innovative eatery.

It offers a combination of healthy meals, snacks and Thai specialities, ranging from breakfasts through to evening dinner. The breakfast selection includes French toast, omelettes or fresh fruit and yoghurt, which are all proving extremely popular. Guided by owner, Lian’s suggestions, we had the Thai, king prawn green papaya salad and mixed dumplings to start, followed by Thai red curry and aromatic beef stew for mains. For drinks, we opted for a fruity glass of Reveron white afrutado to complement the food flavours, as recommended by our server, Shirley, who is extreme-

ly knowledgeable on the subject. Other drinks include tantalising cocktails such as the raspberry mojito, which tastes as good as it sounds. The salad came served

on an impressive platter, topped with prawns, refreshing and fragrant, with citrus and a hint of chilli. The dumplings were in three varieties, Chicken, spring onion and mush-

room, Minced beef with onion, and Omelette and chive, all served with their own special, sweet-chilli dip. During a little break to let the starters settle before moving on to the next dishes, we had a little chat to Lian, who is of Asian origin and descent, but lived 15years in Glasgow, where she owned three successful restaurants before moving to somewhere slightly warmer. She was trained by her

family, who have been in the catering industry since the Seventies. Lian’s aim at Niu is to have a small menu, but to make everything from scratch so it’s fresh. And she wants all the ingredients be sourced locally, including free-range eggs and corn-fed chicken. The main dishes arrived and were set before us. Thai red curry with juicy king prawns, a mixture of fresh ginger, lemon grass and

coconut, with steamed rice on the side. The aromatic beef is one of the Cafe’s signature dishes, slowcooked, tender meat in a unique 10-spice gravy including star anis and nutmeg flavours, served with potatoes and seasonal veg. Highly recommended. Other dishes include healthy Stirfries, Salads and Wraps. After dinner,we sat for a little longer in the chilled atmosphere of the twinkling fairy-light terrace, and were eventually talked into sharing a delicious chocolate fudge cake for dessert, washed down with a barraquito liquor coffee. You can find this refreshing eaterie opposite La Pepa Food Market in C/C Pasarella, and the Paradise Park Hotel. It is open from 9am until late, but closed on Sundays.

Tips to revamp your home

By Sue McDonald AS summer moves into autumn (although of course it´s hard to tell the difference here), it may be time to consider revamping your home a bit.

With our great weather, we are fortunate to be able to spend time outside throughout the year. Nevertheless, everyone likes to be cosy on those cooler evenings. One of the cheapest

ways to make a massive impact on your interior decoration scheme is by using a fresh coat of paint. The best part is that

it is relatively cheap, especially if you roll your sleeves up and do it yourself. And really, what can go wrong? At the very worst, you

could end up having to do it again! If your room comprises neutrals in the main – say white, cream or beige - why not consider

introducing an accent wall in a bold colour? Bear in mind, though, that dark colours will make the room look smaller, and too much matching colour may look a bit twee. Tone your accent wall with cushions or pictures to make everything look

ALL-NEW DISCO INFERNO By Carl Pattison

JUST as I predicted over six months ago in my weekly Fashion column, the Seventies are hitting us big-time now the summer is drawing to a close.

Forget your overlylarge floral prints and those flares … its all back, but this time in a more chic and toneddown version. In comes loose and billowing, leaving behind anything “skinny” or close-fitting. It’s all about embracing the female form and loving those curves. Your average Seventies’ woman oozed femininity, and everything

from her shoes to her hair demonstrated this. So what are your staple pieces to creating this look? Firstly, no woman can go without some stylish, flared jeans. Nothing too wide, though

- just enough to kick out over your mules.

Yes as well as the fashion comes the shoe as

well. And your flares aren’t going to look too good above a pair of heels. A great way to set off this trend is a waistcoat, but make sure it’s slightly longer than your waist. This should be left open to reveal anything from a loose blouse to a Seventies’inspired logo T-shirt. Also, don’t forget that your bag has to tie in with the whole look, as does any accessory, right down to your belt. Even faux suede makes a comeback in shades of light-beige to brown and black. We don’t want you looking as though you’re going to a fancy-dress party, so don’t go overboard. Keep it simple and chic ... and you’ll rock this autumn’s Seventies’ vibe.

co-ordinated. A friend who recently decided to introduce a colour on one of her walls chose an intense grey. When she actually applied it to the wall, it was brown, but, instead of being upset, she loved it, even though it was a colour she wouldn’t have chosen herself. So be open to new ideas, and be prepared to take a chance. Mirrors are not only a stylish, inexpensive way to enliven your living space because they can also make a small area look larger by creating a sense of depth in a room. But make sure not to fit mirrors opposite doors or stairs, as these can be disorientating. Revamping your sofa can be an excellent way of changing your living room completely on the cheap. But before you commit to this project, you have to weigh out the variables. Re-upholstery is often cheaper than you think, and has the advantage of you knowing that your sofa fits and is comfortable, while you can change the colour or look of it completely. Cheaper options from discount retailers are often uncomfortable, or are not built to last, so why not get a quote for re-upholstery? You may be pleasantly surprised. For the cooler season, consider a rug in the centre of the room. Although we don’t really need the warmth, it´s a great way to introduce colour and texture into a room for little outlay. Add in a few textured cushions and, maybe, a few candles to add ambient lighting, and you will be willing those cooler evenings to arrive so you can feel cosy! All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.

It’s an all day Tenerife treat

By Vanessa Vee WE are so lucky to live here in Tenerife and sometimes, we take for granted what our Island has to offer. For a start, people choose to come here for their holidays, and it is largely dependent on tourism. But how many of us actually take holidays here? Okay, we may have taken a few days in a hotel, maybe in Puerto de la Cruz or Los Gigantes, or even Las Americas, which is an excellent way to get away from it all without having to fly off somewhere. I wonder, though, how many of us have actually explored Tenerife? This week, my family did just that, and we decided to stay in a rural hotel. Now, rural does not mean a cabin in the middle of the National Park or camping, which, by the way, I have experienced in the National Park and would highly recommend it. No, rural is more off the beaten track. We wanted somewhere not too far away and also suitable for our two young children, so we booked into the Casa Zaguan hotel in Vilaflor, which is under an hour’s drive from the South. On arrival, we were greeted by the owner

and given a guided tour of the hotel and its facilities. The building itself was inviting and felt like home. The hotel consisted of nine rooms, all individually decorated, which added to its charm. The kids were happy with the swimming pool, while us adults enjoyed the hot tub, sauna, free pool (the game) and table tennis. The hotel is situated opposite the church square, where there are cafes and restaurants close by to sample Canarian cuisine, and have a coffee or beer. After a night’s stay, we were up early, enjoying a fantastic view over the South of the Island above the clouds, while having breakfast. Once we’d checked out, we decided to head over to Garachico to try out the natural pools. The journey is over an hour and so, to break it up, we headed towards Teide. I have travelled through the National Park many times, but it still amazes me with its dynamic landscape and scenic views. From Teide, we dropped down to join the new motorway along to Santiago del Teide. Now that was a highlight in itself, not only were we the only ones on it, but it really did shorten the journey. From Santiago, we headed over to Garachico, and I have a fondness for the village because it is such a beautiful place to visit. It has a church square, where you can have a coffee, plus three museums - all

very cheap to enter which explain all about the leper colony and the importing/exporting of goods between Tenerife and the rest of the world. Once we’d had a dip in the natural pools, we decided to head for lunch, again to break up the journey, so we headed to Meson el Monasterio, just on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz. For those of you who have not been there, it is literally an old monastery, converted into a variety of restaurants. The food itself comprises mainly Canarian cuisine, and the surroundings are spectacular ... and during the meal, you might see chickens and even peacocks passing by your table. Once we’d finished eating, and the children had looked at the animals, we headed on to Santa Cruz. We decided this time not to take in the sights but to savour the shops and a coffee before heading home. And we managed all of this in 24 hours! Yes it was a lot to pack in, but we returned home having felt we had got away and seen a little, but more, of what Tenerife has to offer. So what you waiting for ... go explore this fabulous Island! To book accommodation, transfers, cruises, holiday or excursions, contact the Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team on 922 751 867 (ext 1), email info@tenerife sunshine.com or visit their main office in Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos.

HEADS YOU WIN, HAIRS YOU LOSE

By Carl Pattison

AFTER many questions in the salon about hair loss, I thought I’d put a few minds at rest to calm down a few of you.

There are a few reasons why you lose hair: stress, illness, pregnancy and childbirth, or alopecia, to name a few. So when clients see long hairs falling from their heads and brushes, panic sets in and the feeling is: “I’m going bald.” It may seem that way, but there’s always a story behind what is happening, and it’s not as bad as you might think. Hair falls out to replenish itself - it has to or you would go bald! In fact, hairs have a

lifespan, which may be weeks, months or even years. As a hair falls out, a new one grows, so you see shorter hair mixed in with your longer ones. The scalp is constantly doing this, and it is completely normal. But for those of you who constantly tie your hair up (aggghhhh), or wear lots of hair lacquer, this collects your hairs so that when you eventually brush or wash it, the brush is full of hair - and the plughole, too! We rarely have to extract hair from the plugholes in the salon because we always brush through our clients’ hair before we wash it. This rids the head of any loose hair and, thus, does not horrify clients when we brush their hair through when wet. So when you see the bath full of hair after washing it, take a proper look. Are there hundreds of hairs, or just a few long ones? A tan-

gled mass can look like a head full, but rarely is. But I’ve yet to see any woman going bald. Patches or abnormal thinning are something else, and you’d need to see your doctor or specialist for advice. Any other form is what your hair needs to go through to promote natural growth. So before you wash it, give it a good brush and, during conditioning, comb through with a large tooth comb. Once towel-dried, brush through again and I guarantee you will have only a few hairs in your brush. Panic over … you’re not going to end up like me, so go easy with the stressing ladies or it might be the cause of something more serious in the future. If you have any doubts, feel free to ask your stylists and let them check to see if there really is a problem. Don’t go worrying in silence - it’s what we stylists are here for.

Motoring

By Emma at Motorworld

GUARDIA Civil officers are to intensify spotchecks on roadusers regarding the correct use of seat belts by all passengers, including children, travelling in Spain and the Canaries.

As you know, it is against the law not to wear a seat belt, and this is for the safety of the passengers and drivers in case of an accident. Incorrectly fitted, or worn seatbelts, can be fatal in a major or, sometimes, minor accident. And we should all be aware of how to use our belts correctly. Not wearing a seatbelt, or alcohol and drugs, account for almost half the fatalities on Spanish roads, yet

18th September - 24th September 2015

Seat belts and safety many people disregard them frequently. And though this is obviously a danger, it can also lead to a substantial fine if stopped by the police. They are becoming more and more vigilant about safety measures in the hope of cutting down so many road fatalities. The number of seat belts fitted denotes the number of people a vehicle may carry. For example, if there are two seatbelts fitted to the rear only, the car is permitted by law to carry four people and not five, as sometimes happens. Children must wear the appropriate seatbelt or restraints, according to their height and, sometimes, weight. Spain’s traffic authority, the DGT, states that some 70% of children travelling in cars are not properly protected, and that the correct use of child restraints reduces the likelihood of serious injury by 75%. The laws on children and seat belts is quite clear. All adults MUST

wear seat belts, but under-12s are NOT permitted to travel in the front of a vehicle unless using a properly-fitted, approved restraint. There is only one exception, and that is when the children are at least 135cm tall, they

are permitted to use a normal seat belt in a front passenger seat. In the rear of the vehicle, when children have not reached 135cm, they must use an appropriate fitting for their height and weight. Kids whose height

is equal to or exceeds 135cm, but is less than 150cm, may use a child restraint suitable for their height and weight, or the normal seatbelt. In a similar police campaign carried out in March, more than 5,000 adults were caught and

fined for not wearing a seat belt. In addition, a staggering 287 children were seen travelling without any kind of restraint, and 70 of those were in the front of the vehicle. You must remember when driving that you should be concentrating on the road ahead and other road-users and pedestrians, and not worrying about children, regardless of whether or not you can see them in the mirror. The same law applies to dogs, if seated in the rear of a car. They must also be properly restrained, with the appropriate harness, coupled into the seatbelt restraint. Or, they can be carried in the rear of a vehicle such as an estate car or perhaps a Citroen Berlingo or similar, behind a well-fitted dog-guard, which can be bought at most large pet shops, or online. So to recap, ALWAYS wear your seatbelt and make sure your passengers and/or animals are also belted-up securely. Be safe, not sorry!

Anything you can do...

WE had a new name at the top of Division One in the Direct Telecom Pool League last week, which meant that Dreamers A’s time at the summit was shortlived. They have been strong at home all season, and Tuesday night looked like another three points for them when The Phoenix could muster up just three players. It meant that Dreamers, technically, had a three-frame head start. However, things didn’t go to plan because a resilient Phoenix side managed to win two frames from each session, earning themselves an excellent draw and a point. It just goes to show that you can still get a result even with a shortened side. Food for thought for those who like a postponement! After a two-week break, Gaffers A were back in action with an away trip to Amarilla Golf against Terrace Roosters. The previous week had seen the Roosters beaten 12-0 by Tenerife Hammers A, who are Gaffers great rivals. This provided the away team with an opportunity to lay down a marker of their own. As Gaffers picked up early frames, there seemed to be a sense of inevitability among the Roosters. Try as they might,

they just couldn’t get into the game and finished with their second whitewash of the season, sending Gaffers back to the top of the league. Hammers A were also away from home, down in Los Abrigos against Phoenix Potters. There was a lot of pre-match banter coming from the Potters camp, but Hammers prefer to do their talking on the table - and that’s just what they did, getting into an early stride and never looking back. Palms B, who are still going well, travelled just five metres for a derby game against Tenerife Hammers C. Palms were quickly out of the blocks, taking a 3-1 lead. But Hammers rallied and, powered by the Werther’s Originals they won last week, shared the next session to leave the game nicely poised at 5-3 to Palms. Heineken then lost to Shammy and Palms had at least a draw, but Tony beat Shi to bring it to 6-4, and that was it ... Palms took the final two frames and another three points. Bluebell A, who made a decent start to life in Division One, have struggled in recent weeks. And a trip to Silencio to play Exiles A just added to their woes. They started steadily enough, the first session finishing 2-2, but

they then lost three games on the bounce. This gave Exiles a two-frame advantage going into the last session Exiles, needing just two from the final frames, grabbed them early for the draw and then took the final two for the points. Stash was on form again for the home team, taking another three frames. Palms A and Rewind should both be doing better. They fought out a tight contest in which most of the frames

could have gone either way. Rewind took the points 9-3 for their first win of the season, and Palms will need to bounce back after their week off. The final game of the night was Gaffers B against Terrace Bantams. The away team started well, winning the first two frames, and it should have been 3-0 but Mal missed an easy black to let Gaffers back in. Wilson then sevenballed Adi from the break to level the score

at 2-2. The Bantams took the next three frames and in the fourth, Mal was back in action. Again, he should have made it 6-2 but again he fluffed his lines. Gaffers then won three on the bounce and the momentum was theirs at 6-5. It was Wilson against Adi again! Wilson missed a late, easy yellow, which gifted Adi the frame and a vital point. In Division Two, Bluebell B made it six wins out of seven with a straightforward victory over Sabores. Treehouse B are their nearest rivals and the Chayofa crew are going nicely. They were too strong for Dreamers B and are now just two points behind with a game in hand.

Tenerife Pool Tables are also unbeaten after winning their Pizza derby match with Crown A. New signing Adi has made his mark at the lower level, and Fat Nick’s side were good value for the 8-4 win. On the second table, Crown B nicked their second victory of the campaign but Picassos, a decent yardstick, made a real fight of it. On another night they could have returned to Torviscas with a point, but the Bounty Hunters got the points 7-5. Finally, Splash Bar were a little too good for Hoppys. The 9-3 win made it a fine seven points from their three home games this month, and they are an improving side.

Plowman sows, and reaps reward IN the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League the point-scoring team of the week didn’t really feature any players from the big clubs, which is a reflection of how they are currently performing. The highest-scoring player was Steven Naismith with his superb hat-trick against Chel-

sea, which enabled him to pick up 17 points. In the league itself, Just 4Fun, managed by Paul Plowman, retained top spot. He leads by eight points with a 269 total. Just behind him is our old friend Frank Devaney with his team, Baines on Toast, and he will be confident, after

last season’s showing, of bridging the gap easily. Team of the Week saw the honours shared and, in a strange quirk of fate, two West Ham fans racked up 70 points each. First there was Mikehammered, managed by Mike Edens. His captain was Dimitri Payet, who scored two

against Newcastle for West Ham, contributing 32 points, and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, as vice-captain, scoring 11 points. Keep an eye out for the wonderfully-named Real Sociopath team managed by Jon Exley. They could EZEly fly up the league. If you want a lesson in

how not to succeed at fantasy football, look no further than Canarian Weekly’s very own sports writer Adi Benson. After having a poor start, specifically with his goalkeepers, he decided to play a wild card this week. He brought in Gomez from Liverpool, who conceded a penalty,

and Azpilicueta, whose team conceded three goals. But his biggest mistakes were up front. In came Aguero, who lasted 20 minutes before injury cut short his afternoon, and he took out Steven Naismith, who promptly scored a hat-trick. So watch what Adi does … and do the opposite!

Netting nada from Nadas! Having plugged away for 12 long weeks, Pas O Nadas A were the only team in Division 1 without a win, although they had been knocking on the door with three consecutive draws. A trip to fellow-strugglers Bar 180 B gave them another chance to notch that first victory, and they did so in style. In fact, by the end of the evening, hosts Bar 180 B were left with nada ... and the Nadas left with ocho! Up at the top, Boothen Army and Phoenix were each hoping the other one would slip up, but they both won 6-2 to maintain the status quo. The Army beat house-mates Boothen Titans, with Sam hitting his sixth maximum, while Titans’ Jim replied with his second. Phoenix faced a tricky visit to Gaffers, and although gooner Terry fired in his second 180 and Telf checked out on 115, the visitors had

too much for the Las Americas outfit. Waterfall Warriors entertained third-place Hoppys Bar and a fine match ensued, with Wayne clocking a maximum for the hosts and Grizzly checking out on 156. Hoppys finally ran out 6-2 victors. The tree-huggers’ derby on Golf del Sur saw Palms Sports Bar claiming a six-point haul from Palms Pool bar, while the San Blas derby had Emerald Shamrocks putting seven past Emerald Lounge. Match of the day in Division 2 came at unbeaten Phoenix Flights, who faced Spear Chuckers, their closest rivals. Chuckers needed a good win to narrow the gap on the leaders. But a solid performance by the latter had them 4-1 up after the singles, with Elaine enjoying her night by beating Duncan 2-1. After sharing the doubles’ legs, the home side took the

Real defeat - Real problems! CD Tenerife 0 Real Oviedo 2

By Roscoe THE 2nd of June 2007 was a hot, sunny day, with temperatures in the high 80s. It’s amazing how much detail you can remember about a random day.

It sticks in the memory as the day Tenerife produced their worst “performance” in front of my eyes. Every fan will have a match that sticks in the mind.

Goals from Carrizo and Morales gave alreadyrelegated - and by some distance - Vecindario a stunning 2-0 win in the Heliodoro. Las Palmas winning in Santa Cruz is horrible, but tiny Vecindario, a club smaller than CD Marino? Never! In the Tenerife side that day were eight players who would win promotion to La Liga two years later. While I still have the Vecindario moment, I wonder how many fans will now have their Real Oviedo experience. The defeat last weekend was nothing short of a disgrace. Every team loses. Every team has a bad run. But a lack of passion or heart

is something fans will never allow. Four games in and three defeats. Not a single win and no sign of one. Both home matches lost to promoted

sides. This steam has already been chopped more times than a pork fillet. If something isn’t right at Chelsea, then god knows how you describe

the mess that is CD Tenerife. Last week I offered that manager Raul Agne would be fired if Tenerife lost to Oviedo. Well he is still in a job

by the skin of his teeth. Lose and don’t bother getting on the plane after the match in Llagostera. The last time Tenerife made such a bad start to the season, they were relegated. Oh and went through five managers in the process. Wily old fox Quique Setién is already being lined up to take over, but why he would want the job is the real question. Tenerife’s senior players are the main problem, and not one of them is in any sort of form. Ricardo returns this weekend, and maybe his input in midfield will make the difference. It needs to!

Little or large - a tough call

WE had a welcome return to Premier League action, and yet another weekend demonstrated the unpredictability of this season. There seems to have been a large gap bridged from the smaller teams to the larger teams as the closeness in matches is more evident this time around.

By Adi Benson

Chelsea v Arsenal

What is going on at the Bridge? Another lacklustre performance against Everton saw Chelsea suffer their third defeat in five games. The passion from last season seems to have gone, and you can’t help but wonder if Mourinho’s siege mentality is unsettling the players. This game is now very important for them and him. Arsenal, up there in the top four, haven’t really hit top gear yet. They looked good against Stoke, with plenty of possession and passing, but again, they look poor in front of goal. Theo Walcott is never going to be the new Thierry Henry!

Prediction: Draw Last season: 2-0

The fans have criticised owner Mike Ashley for not investing in players, yet he loosened the purse strings this season. So far, though, the new signings have failed to gel. If they don’t soon, they could end up well adrift of their rivals. Watford have actually made a half-decent start, losing just once, drawing three and then, their first win coming against Swansea last weekend after scoring for the first time in four games. Defensively they look good and, if they can kick on and score more goals, they will be okay.

Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A Stoke v Leicester

You always knew what you were getting with Stoke. It was always a physical game with longball tactics. But Mark Hughes has changed all this and bought in flair players, raising a few eyebrows along the way. So far it hasn’t worked as they look for their first win, maybe it’s time they went back to route-one tactics. Football is a confidence game and the Foxes are absolutely brimming with it after coming from two goals down to beat Villa. They are certainly worthy of their current league position and will look to continue their unbeaten run. Riyad Mahrez is key to this, and Stoke need to keep him quiet.

Europa League place come May.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 2-0 Spurs v Crystal Palace

Spurs managed their first win of the season against Sunderland, but it wasn’t pretty and could have so easily gone the other way. Their lack of activity in the transfer window looks to be causing them problems as they have a paper-thin squad. And, with the Europa League starting this week, it could cause an unwelcome distraction. Palace look a good team and have given every side they have played this season a tough game. They were genuinely unlucky not to take points off Arsenal and Man City, and if they stay injury -free, they will finish the season well up the table.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-0

Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-1 Swansea v Everton Aston Villa v West Brom

Villa will be kicking themselves after their last game because if you are to avoid a relegation fight, you cannot let slip a 2-0 lead. They played well to get ahead, but the way they collapsed showed just how fragile they are at the back, even with Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott, who have plenty of experience. West Brom’s season has not really got going yet, but a local derby is a great way to ignite your season. We know they will be tight at the back, but they are another team struggling in front of goal. They need Berahino back on the pitch, but will his heart really be in it?

The Swans will have been disappointed with the defeat by Watford, but they got what they deserved after a poor performance. They started the season brightly, but we all have off-days at the office and they will want to get back on the pitch and back to winning ways as soon as possible. This is going to be a tough game, though. Everton really have their tails up after a brilliant win against Chelsea, and they will hope to continue that momentum. John Stones looks unaffected by the summer transfer talk, and he has been solid at the back. And don’t even talk to me about Steven Naismith!

Prediction: Draw Last season: 1-1

Prediction: Draw Last season: 2-1

Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A Newcastle v Watford

It seems that Steve McClaren has really got his work cut out as Newcastle sit bottom of the league.

It has been an indifferent start for the Saints and now they are unsettled, with talks of Ronald Koeman being approached to take over the Dutch national team. They are tricky opponents at home and try to keep things tight. But they really need Pelle to be at his best and start scoring goals. United will be confident after a win against Liverpool last weekend, It wasn’t the best game of football, but in the second half they looked strong and were dangerous in attack. What a debut as well for Anthony Martial, who looked untroubled by his large transfer fee. And for that goal alone, he has ensured hero status among the fans.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-2

Bournemouth v Sunderland

I have said on more than one occasion that to succeed in this league, you have to win your mini-leagues. Against Norwich last week, a poor Bournemouth know it is a game they should have won. This is another one of those. They are a tough team to play against at home and, if they get early goals, the points should be theirs. Sunderland have basically continued where they left off last season. Despite summer investments, there is still something missing: fragile at the back, weak in the middle and without a confident goalscorer up front. A long season beckons for the fans.

Southampton v Man Utd

Liverpool v Norwich

Man City v West Ham

City continued their unbeaten run with a lastminute win against Palace, and all talk is of them being 11 points clear of Chelsea. But that is unfair to Leicester, Man Utd and Arsenal because they are the closest challengers. Another home fixture should see them pick up another three points, but the league isn’t yet won yet. West Ham are on a good run with successive wins, looking comfortable in both of them. Dimitri Payet looks a fine acquisition and they have some quality players returning from injury. So they could have an outside shout for a

If ever a manger looked out of his depth, it is Brenda. Surely his days are numbered? I can’t understand why he insists on playing players out of position, and since when has Danny Ings been a winger? It looks like another season of mediocrity for the Reds. If you want to win titles and trophies, you need a manager who has been there and done that! Norwich will be pleased with their win against Bournemouth, especially scoring three goals. And if they have done their homework, they will know exactly how to play against Liverpool. This could become a huge win for them.

Prediction: Draw Last Season: N/A
