Inside this week...

THE Spanish economy is the fasting growing in the European Union, and unemployment has fallen for the last 15 months. Exports are increasing, tourism is booming and the housing market is starting to warm up.

But scratch at the surface and you will see some deep problems, which show no signs of going away.

In fact, it can be argued that the gap between the haves and the have-nots has never been wider in the Canary Islands.

Poverty strikes at the heart of our society Continued from front.

If the latest figures are to believed, poverty is on every street corner, and workers in the archipelago are struggling to make ends meet.

In the Canaries, an employment contract does not guarantee a life above the breadline. Two out of three working Canarians earn less than the minimum wage, and 50% of them earn just 1,000 euros per month - and many of them are also heads of households.

The figures were presented by Canary Islands Deputy Prime Minister Patricia Hernandez in her address to Parliament to discuss the future plan against poverty. And she is adamant that immediate action is required.

There were no economic promises of what items will go in the next regional budgets to combat poverty.

And as for long-term goals, she admitted that the distress situations persisting in many parts of the archipelago have forced the executive to try to design a more ambitious plan than that of the current strategy.

“We will not fight over the figures, and nor are we going to blow out of proportion when we talk about financial items,” she said.

“And we will not use the unemployment data as if they were a failure or success. We simply must all agree on the right way to avoid social poverty.”

The Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged the reality that many families live in the Archipelago, and that many homes do not have money to pay for medicines.

Some 12,000 dependants have to survive without any financial assistance, and the decline in the unemployment rate is full of workers hired for a couple of hours only.

“It has decreased the number of unemployed, yet revenue is down,” she complained.

If it’s hard for those in employment, spare a thought for those who are still looking. The soul-destroying, mathematical facts show the

difficulties a jobless Canarian person must overcome to find employment.

Officially, there are just 1,835 vacancies. If the 336,500 unemployed people - according to the Labour Force Survey Activa - were divided by that number, it would mean there would be 183 potential applicants for every job offered by employers.

In Spain as a whole, the figure would be 85 for each job for the near five million unemployed.

The data is part of the Labour Cost Survey, published by the Canarian Institute of Statistics (INE).

The number of vacancies in companies in the archipelago has been cut in relation to the beginning of 2015, when it had 3,027.

The INE also asked

businesses in the different autonomous communities for reasons why they were not employing more staff. The most common answer, by far, is that they need no additional workers. In the Canaries, 88.6% of employers responded to the query with that answer.

Regions with the most vacancies are Madrid, Cataluña and Andalusia.

Those with the least are located in Navarra, La Rioja and Cantabria.

Those with employment are the lucky ones and, in some ways, so are those who are unemployed, but have a per-

manent roof over their heads. Homelessness is on the rise and there are simply not enough shelters. In fact, there are nowhere near enough.

In late 2014, the Canaries’ intervention units attended to 299 people who spent the night on the streets, The figure had risen by 119 when compared with 2012, when the average occupancy rate was 99.3% in shelters - the highest percentage of all the country.

The survey, conducted by the INE, aims to account for the different characteristics of the centres and services for the homeless, capacity and occupation, sources of financing, target population and human resources, among others.

Twice a year the INE survey - in December and June - show how many people are being treated at the moment and, literally, those who do not have a roof over their heads.

In addition to discovering the increasing number of people sleeping rough, the INE also warns that the take-up rate in Canaries carecentres was the highest across the country.

On top of the difficulties of finding a bed, and more people trying to sleep in a shelter, there is more evidence to warn that poverty is embedded in a part of the Islands’ society.

During 2014, the shelters saw the number of meals served in these centres double: 2,303 breakfasts, 2,512 lunches and 2,312 dinners.

Meanwhile the Red Cross is warning of a food-aid shortage in the South of Tenerife. “We are now under the minimum amount of food we need every day to meet the demand,” said Benito Hernandez Barrera.

The Red Cross relies on the Fund for European Aid (FEGA), which aims to help the most disadvantaged families and is 85% funded by the European Union.

This money buys the food which is distributed

among 250 families in the Abona area. But demand for help has rocketed.

“Food is still the main demand, more than any other, but we also need general items which people need as we approach winter,” said Hernandez Barrera.

His work covers the municipalities of Arona, Granadilla, Vilaflor, San Miguel and Arico, and he sees first-hand the reallife problems the longterm crisis has produced.

“People still cannot make ends meet,” he said. “The aid does not decrease, and we are talking about very young, whole families - parents with their children, desperate after losing their jobs. It is very rare to find single people among claimants of aid.”

September and October are hardest months for the Red Cross. Families struggling to pay for heat and food have little chance of finding any funds for school supplies. A contribution by the DISA Foundation, has seen 500 backpacks equipped with school supplies being given to those in need.

This allow many children from Nursery, Primary and Secondary levels to start a course as normal.

The Red Cross in the South is also involved heavily in the distribution of breakfasts for schools. Their volunteers take it in turns to help cater for children attending class, who have not eaten before they arrive at the school gates.

It is a pack with a sandwich, juice and some fruit.

“Unfortunately, there are more children than we think - all those who go to school every morning without eating anything,” added Hernandez Barrera.

At times, it’s hard to believe that it is 2015 and not 1815. Poverty is the biggest shame on a civilised society.

And while we applaud those who are helping, the community must look at its leaders and ask whether everything that can be done, is being done!

Tourism students add to the value of Adeje AT the opening of the new university year in Adeje, Antonio Martinó, the University of La Laguna rector, Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga, spoke of their plans to improve the course offer and make the borough an international reference point for tourism studies.

It has been just three years since Adeje became the official University of La Laguna campus in South Tenerife. In that time, the number of students taking this third-level course in tourism has grown from 50 to the 123, who have just begun their four-year course.

Already, though, it is proving important to

Adeje’s position as a world leader in this important market. The Mayor told those gathered for the term’s official opening that the existence of the course gave the sector “a strategic importance, not just for Adeje but for Tenerife and the Canary Islands”.

He said education was “key in the consolidation of a destination that wishes to be leader in the sector, and the presence of the university here is a fundamental factor in our future”.

He added: “Training plays an important part in future possibilities.”

The Adeje Mayor told the rector he was guaranteed the council’s support in developing the course further to ensure that the presence of the university gave “added value” to the local sector.

And he said it made sense that Adeje could be a top-choice study

destination for those who want to undertake tourism training at degree and master’s level.

He also told those currently studying to take full advantage of the course and the location.

The university rector thanked the Mayor and supported his intentions, adding that the existence of the campus in the South was the perfect example of collaboration between different institutions.

“This project meets the needs of the South of the Island,” he said.

“Our wish is that the campus in the south will be strengthened and, in the coming weeks, we want to look ahead to see what other courses we can bring here.

“We are all aware of the key role tourism plays in the economic development of the Island, in progress, and tourism also plays a part in promoting coexistence between the

different regions and towns.”

He added that the intention was, ultimately, to introduce an international master’s degree in tourism that would attract European students to study here,. And that, in time, Tenerife would become an international reference point for tourism studies in general.

The rector urged private as well as public sector bodies to work together, to form an educational/employment pact, linking university education with social and political needs and realities.

“From the universities’ point of view, we are working to do much more than simply offer ideas,” he said. “This isn’t just about reaching agreement about an educative system, but linking studies to the economic world today and employment needs.

“These islands have a high level of unemploy-

ment and all of us, in particular those of us in the university, need to concentrate on finding ways of reducing this figure.”

Carolina Ramos, who will graduate this year and is part of the first group to take up to the tourism course, also addressed the gathering.

Representing the student body, she said: “Adeje is in the tourism ‘Champions League’.

We want to prove that the students here in Adeje are prepared to meet the demands of the sector.”

Carolina acknowledged that when the course began a few years ago, students felt somewhat like “guinea pigs”, though they were proud to be at the forefront of a new project.

Also invited to address those present was Javier Muñoz Alegre, Operations Director for Iberostar Canaries and Cape Verde.

He told those present:

“Tourism is a changing phenomenon, which has to adapt itself to the wishes of visitors.

It depends upon geopolitical factors which can help or hinder, depending.”

Tenerife, he added, had taken great strides in meeting three essential goals in modern tourism: hotel renovation, improvement of public zones and upgrading professional standards.

However he believes it is also important that public administrations are aware of the need to advance at the same pace as private investment.

Of the first group of professionals preparing to graduate from this course, he said they would be welcomed by all sectors.

“Tourism is a complex sector, demanding increasingly-higher levels of professionalism, underlined by the high expectations of the clients,” he added.

Yield to safety!

ADEJE Council, via Councillor Andrés Pérez Ramos’s Department of Transport, Traffic and Road Safety, is introducing a borough-wide traffic plan, which will include improving the condition of roads and pavements.

It will lead to better and safer road conditions for residents and drivers and, said Cllr Pérez Ramos: “We are working to improve and guarantee the safety of individuals.

“So it is important to upgrade the horizontal and upright street-signalling along frequently-used roads and pathways, as well as ensuring that those less used are also in prime condi-

tion.

Among the scheduled works are the signalling in Playa Paraíso, Fañabé, Armeñime, Los Menores, La Postura, Los Olivos and the centre of Adeje town.

The Councillor also said that repainting in the Charco del Valle, El

Galeón and Las Torres neighbourhoods will be carried out soon.

Another important inclusion is the upgrading of streets and roads for those with reduced mobility, with increased allocated parking throughout the borough.

That will eliminate many hindrances existing now, and improve access to pedestrian zones.

The Councillor added: “During the work, the council counts on the patience of the residents, who understood that these improve-

ments are necessary to ensure, as much as possible, road safety in all the borough’s neighbourhoods, streets and avenues.”

He said that in paral-

lel, the Council was also continuing with talks in schools to underline the importance of road safety to Adeje’s next generation of drivers and road-users.

Catalonia independence may see banks withdraw

CATALAN authorities have been warned that Spanish commercial and savings banks could consider withdrawing their services altogether if the region gains independence and breaks away from Spain.

The Spanish Bank Association (AEB) and the Savings Banks Association (CECA), whose members include major lenders Caixabank, Sabadell, Santander and BBVA, asked in a joint statement for “re-

forms” to keep Catalonia Spanish.

The demand mirrors a similar petition made last Friday by business association Círculo de Empresarios, which asked for constitutional reform and an overhaul of the Catalan financing system to ensure the region does not go it alone.

“These difficulties would force financial institutions to reconsider their implantation strategy,” said the association.

With nine days to go before Catalonia holds regional elections, which are being cast by secessionists as a makeor-break vote on inde-

pendence, a growing chorus of voices is joining the public debate on such a move.

In their statement, bankers caution against “the risks to financial stability of any political decision that would break current legality and exclude a part of Spain from the European Union and the euro zone”.

The message also underscores “the legal insecurity” that lenders would face in a secession scenario.

It adds: “These difficulties would force financial institutions to reconsider their implantation strategy, with the resulting risk of a

Pure water on way again for Santa Cruz residents

SANTA Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, is pleased that a temporary solution is being found for the municipality’s sewage treatment-plant problem.

There is now an agreement in place between Tenerife Cabildo and the Councils of Santa Cruz, La Laguna and El Rosario, and Bermudez said: “I am satisfied with the route we have taken.”

The agreement needs to be adapted urgently to meet new environmental requirements, ensuring that the water in the metropolitan area is again purified.

It was announced last week that the Santacrucero Consistory

will invest 681,000 euros, with Cabildo collaboration, in the machinery needed to meet the new demands.

The Mayor added: “It is logical that it should have been the three municipalities who have come together, and it does not matter that, again, it will be Santa Cruz Council which has taken the lead. “We need to purify the water in the metropolitan area,which is why we are the Island Capital and, sometimes, we have to take a step forward.”

Bermudez said “the good news is that the money needed will be incorporated in the budgets to ensure that

the expansion work begins next year.

That work, which will eventually cost 32m euros, will be put out to tender later this year, to enable the work to start next June.

The new infrastructure should be operational by June 2018 and, said Bermudez: “It will ensure that we are going to purify the total water needed in the metropolitan area.”

To add to its problems, if Catalonia were to declare unilateral independence, it would be expelled from the European Union immediately and also banned from rejoining, accord-

ing to a new report.

Such a secession declaration would openly violate Spanish and European legislation, says a study by Fundación Alternativas, a progressive think-tank whose board includes former Socialist Party (PSOE) Prime Minister Felipe González and current Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena.

Red Cross support for our needy Brits BRITISH people living in Spain will now have easier access to Red Cross services and support, thanks to a nationwide co-operation agreement signed by British Ambassador Simon Manley and Javier Gimeno, Spanish Red Cross Vice-President.

The agreement aims to improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable expatriates, and their ability to access Red Cross services.

It also hopes to encourage people in the British community to volunteer for Red Cross activities and promote collaboration with other British community associations.

The partnership, signed on Monday at the Red Cross headquarters, will be piloted in the province of Alicante, which has a large British community.

The plan is extend it nationwide, enabling British communities

across Spain to access Red Cross services and become involved in their projects.

Simon Manley said: “People in the British communities have a wealth of experience and skills, and I really hope this new partnership with the Red Cross will encourage more people to volunteer their talents and support for the benefit of others.

“The agreement will also help to ensure that British expats in the Alicante region have easier access to the wide range of Red Cross resources, which can improve their quality of life.”

Javier Gimeno added: “We have identified a

large number of British people in our province who, because of their age and health, may require Red Cross services such as adapted transport, accompaniment and home telecare.

“Our aims are to inspire the British community to volunteer for the Red Cross, and to encourage those who require assistance to take advantage of our services.”

Pamela Twissel-Cross, Royal British Legion Welfare Officer who attended the signing, said: “I’m really looking forward to working more closely with the Red Cross. It will give me a chance to help British nationals get additional support.

“It will also be a chance to learn and find out more about what is available so that, together, we can support the most vulnerable.”

The signing ceremony was attended by representatives of a large number of English language associations in the province of Alicante including: Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur, the Royal British Legion, the Samaritans, the Royal Airforce Association, Help at Home, International Residents Daya Nueva, AFA Torrevieja, MABS Cancer Support, Help at Home Mar Menor, and the HELP groups in Denia, Benidorm, Jalón Valley, Vega Baja and Mar Menor.

Plane passengers in flap over emergency landing HOLIDAY-MAKERS returning home to Wales from Tenerife, were scared out of their wits when their plane had to make an emergency landing in the early hours of Sunday.

The drama happened at Cardiff Airport when the landing flaps of the Thomson Airways flight failed to open as it prepared to land and the anxious pilot told his 200 passengers: “This is not a drill.”

People were weeping, and one woman even fainted as pas-

sengers were told to take the brace position. Pregnant woman were moved from their seats and those sitting in emergency exit seats were told: “You may need to open the doors ... but not if the wing is on fire!”

After coming in to land, the plane pulled up again because the landing flaps - which reduce the plane’s speed - were not opening.

The pilot circled the city for 20 minutes to lose fuel, and then landed 20 metres from the end of the runway, where fire engines were waiting.

Passenger Sarah Rees, 46, who was aboard flight TOM6555 with her 48-year-old hus-

band, Tony, told Wales Online: “We were coming down to land and getting lower and lower when we suddenly ascended again.

“The pilot came on the loudspeaker and explained what was going on. He radioed Cardiff and said we were going to do an emergency landing.

“He said, ‘This is not a drill. Prepare for an emergency landing’. It was awful. There was a very real chance of dying and I was terrified.”

She said lots of people were crying but it was “eerily quiet” and people were holding hands ... until a big cheer resounded around the plane when

the pilot brought the aircraft safely on to the runway.

A company spokeswoman said: “Thomson Airways can confirm that flight TOM6555, travelling from Tenerife to Cardiff, experienced a technical issue.

“Following standard procedure, Cardiff airtraffic control contacted the emergency services to meet the flight.

The aircraft landed safely and all passengers disembarked normally.

“The safety of our customers and crew is of paramount importance, and we would like to reassure customers that this type of situation is extremely rare.”

Death of would-be burglar inside villa A SUSPECTED burglar, who died after apparently being restrained by a British man and his son in their Portuguese holiday villa, has sparked a police investigation.

A scuffle is said to have broken out after the intruder was discovered inside the family’s property, on the outskirts of Vilamoura.

Police sources said the alleged intruder, a Portuguese man in his twenties who has not been named, was known to them after previous arrests for robbery.

It is believed that suspect was still alive when police first arrived after being called by the British man’s wife.

Officers found the father and son, named locally as Trevor and Scott Taylor, grappling with the suspect. Jill Taylor was said to have been in the garden at the time.

The 60-year-old father was on top of the suspect, it is understood, while the son had his arm around his neck.

An autopsy will determine how he died, but the suspect is thought to have suffered heart failure as officers went to handcuff him. They were unable to revive him.

It is believed that

Mrs Taylor, 59, heard a noise in the house, went to investigate and found a man with family possessions in his hands including their car keys.

She screamed, and her husband and son came into the room and apprehended him before police arrived in the early hours of Sunday.

The two men are believed to have sustained minor injuries.

They were questioned by officers but not arrested. But they will have to inform the Portuguese authorities should they want to leave the neighbourhood.

The public prosecutor will decide whether legal action should be taken.

A source said: “Police received a call around 4am on Sunday and, when GNR officers arrived, they found the wife waiting for them in the garden.

“The father was on top of the intruder when police went in and his son behind him with his arm round his neck. There had obviously been a struggle and the son was trying to restrain him while his dad tied his hands up.”

Mr and Mrs Taylor are keen golfers, who retired to Vilamoura several years ago to enjoy the area’s top courses.

Scott Taylor, 31, is understood to have owned the villa since 2002.

Accessory to murder ... 260 charges, at 91!

A WAR-TIME German woman, alleged to have worked in the Auschwitz death camp complex, has been charged with an astonishing 260,000 counts of being an accessory to murder. And she is now aged 91!

German prosecutors say the woman, who cannot be named because of legal reasons, was said to be a member of the Nazi SS, working as a radio operator for the camp commandant for several months in 1944.

They say she can be charged as an accessory to murder because

of her role there. Earlier this year, a 94-yearold man - known as the “Book-keeper of Auschwitz” - was jailed under similar circumstances.

Former SS member Oskar Groening was imprisoned for four years over the murder of 300,000 people at the death camp.

As for the old woman, prosecutors say there has been no indication that she is unfit to stand trial.

But court officials are unlikely to decide whether to proceed with the case until next year.

There but for the grace of God...

OUR front-page story this week makes grim reading. How can so many people on our lovely Island be struggling in poverty?

And, and in many cases,with little chance of any real, long-term solution.

We struggle because of what we are: a tiny island in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s not as though you can just hop on a train and travel somewhere in search of work.

Day-to-day expenses are lower than the mainland, which leads to lower wages. Most of the work is manual or in the service industry, where wages stay low as there is always a demand for a job. You don’t need a degree to chop a banana tree or serve a beer.

Supply and demand.

Tenerife is not as bad as a Ralph McTell song, but there is hardship all around us.

There is an advert on Spanish TV at the moment which shows an

ageing woman feeding her two young children an evening meal.

I say meal, it’s nothing but tinned sausages with a handful of chips. The kids ask why she is not eating. “I’m not hungry” the woman lies, as the camera pans into the sorrow etched on her face.

In the first series of the classic TV show Two and a Half Men, there is an episode which focuses on Charlie Harper’s money woes.

Charlie: “I can’t do this any more, Alan. I quit.”

Alan: “You can’t quit poverty, Charlie.”

Charlie: “I want the good stuff! I want cheese that isn’t airdropped into Third World countries! I want touchless toilet paper! I want vodka that doesn’t look like Fred Flintstone would drink it! I want my life back.”

And that’s the point.

Nobody chooses poverty and homelessness.

The really scary part is just how close many of us are to experiencing it. What if you lost your job, had no family and were unable to raise enough for just the basics in life?

ARONA and Adeje are jointly celebrating a weekend of events to mark Sunday’s World Tourism Day on Troya beach.

That’s a point where the two boroughs meet, geographically and, in the presence of the international community, the objective is to emphasise the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.

And, of course, to discover who make the best sandcastles!

Under the slogan “A thousand million tourists, a thousand million opportunities”, the two Councils have developed the programme through their respective tourism departments, led by Adeje’s Ermitas Moreira García and David Miguel Pérez González, in Arona.

It is designed to preserve and heighten the relevance of tourism as the Canary Islands’ chief, economic, driving force.

All the events have been planned with the full co-operation of the Cabildo, via its Department of Employment, Commerce, Industry and Economic Development, led by Efraín Medina.

Adeje Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moreira said: “During the planning of this event, which is of huge relevance for these tourist destinations, the three adminstrations - Adeje and Arona Councils and the Cabildo - have worked well together, and the end result is very positive.

“We are working on the commitment we have to our citizens and the future of this industry.”

She added that they

would continue to look at co-hosting events, and work towards a synergy between administrations to increase efficiency - and guarantee a better service for local society.

Arona Tourism Councillor David Pérez acknowledged the co-operation established with Costa Adeje, saying: “We are celebrating this event with a wide programme of events and activities for tourists and residents.”

He thanked the Cabildo, Turismo de Tenerife and Ashotel, and FIT (the Factory for Tourism Innovation) for getting involved in the project.

“They took part in meetings during the last month and showed their commitment and capacity to work together,” he said.

Councillor Pérez added that as well as celebrating World Tourism Day, the event would also work to energise the Playa de Las Américas zone, and showcase local customs and traditions along the Arona and Adeje beaches, with activities in Spanish and English.

The activities begin tomorrow (Saturday) at 10am on Troya beach in both boroughs.

Representatives from all administrations will gather on Sunday for an official visit to the arts and crafts fair, along the maritime path by the beach, to celebrate World Tourism Day. Seahorse smuggler has wings clipped IT was a real eye-opener for Customs officers when they discovered two kilograms of dead seahorses in the suitcase of a tourist arriving at Malaga airport.

The Chinese holidaymaker was attempting to smuggle in two plastic bags full of the creatures “for personal consumption”.

Airport officials found the dead seahorses tucked in among the

man’s clothes after he had travelled from Cali in Colombia, via Amsterdam.

Staff raised the alert after he had shown “signs of nerves”, and he will face prosecution for flouting import/export laws.

While seahorses are regarded as a delicacy in some countries, it is a Chinese belief that dried seahorses cure libido problems.

Adeje marks World Alzheimer’s Day ADEJE Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo has underlined his council’s commitment to the Alzheimer’s unit in Los Menores Cultural Centre.

She was taking part in a ceremony to mark World Alzheimer’s Day on Monday, visiting the unit which offers help and support to those who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and senile dementia, as well as their families.

Cllr Trujillo Bencomo met Centre director Alejandro San Blas and detailed a number of on-going projects the Council is work-

ing on, in conjunction with AFATE (the association for families and sufferers of Alzheimer’s and other dementias).

She also pledged to continue the good work that has been under way since the centre opened a year ago.

Among future plans are a series of information workshops about Alzheimer’s, talks about early detection and possible improvements in quality of life for sufferers and their carers and families.

The centre attends to 11 people (six women and five men) with the assistance of a qualified team trained in psychology, physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapies.

Gag law shuts out locksmith A LOCKSMITH, unable to live up to his reputation of providing a 24hour call-out service, has been hit by the farcical “gag law” in the small town of Pizarra, in Málaga province.

Self-employed Juan Carlos Puyoles was prevented from attending a call in the early hours of the morning because a car had blocked his garage entrance, despite a clear “no parking” sign.

When he tried to contact the town’s municipal police station by phone,

there was no reply, which made his blood boil.

So he wrote about it on his Facebook page, intending to draw the Pizarra Mayor’s attention to what he saw as a local police shortcoming.

The next day, police officers called at his home to tell him he faced prosecution for “making comments that were disrespectful to the local police of Pizarra”.

Puyoles had unwittingly fallen foul of Spain’s recent Citizen Safety Law, which has been criticised by opposition parties, human rights groups, individuals who have been collared, and even the European Union.

Frightening dementia warning about babies THE Alzheimer’s Research UK charity has issued a chilling warning this week that one in three people born in Britain this year will suffer from some form of dementia in their lifetime.

The figures, revealed by the organisation on Monday - World Alzheimer’s Day - suggest the condition will affect 27% of boys born in 2015 and 37% of girls.

With no treatment to stop or slow dementia, the charity has warned of a “looming national health crisis” as the population ages. And it is renewing its call for more urgent action to tackle the illness.

Dr Matthew Norton, Head of Policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “These figures underline a stark reality. As people are living longer, more and more will develop dementia in the future if action is not taken now.

“Dementia is our greatest medical challenge and, if we are to beat it, we must invest

in research to find new treatments and preventions.”

It affects 850,000 people in the UK and is caused by brain diseases, most commonly Alzheimer’s, which result in the loss of brain cells and impair the brain’s ability to function properly.

Cathy Davidson, a 65-year-old from Swindon, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s almost eight years ago. She can no longer dress or feed herself and now lives in a care home.

Her daughter, Amanda Franks, a champion of Alzheimer’s Research UK, told Sky News: “She isn’t the same person. I would describe it as looking at somebody who looks like my mum but it’s not my mum.

“Every time you visit, you get a little indication that she’s still there. But very much now, you’re looking after a body rather than the person.”

Alzheimer’s Research UK claims that if a drug could be developed to delay the onset of dementia by five years, the number of people living with the condition would be reduced by a third.

But Juan Carlos insisted: “I haven’t insulted or disrespected anybody.

What I wrote on my Facebook page didn’t refer directly to anybody; nor did it incite hate, or anything of the kind.

“All I was doing was reporting a lack of a public service. I needed to get to work and couldn’t because nobody answered the phone to help me.”

He has since removed the comment from his Facebook page, but explains that he wrote something along the lines of: “It’s 1.30am, I’m calling the police and they aren’t there, but you can find them having a cup of coffee in the village up the road every morning.”

Another post on his Facebook page says: “It was the second time it had happened. I was trying to get out of my garage and couldn’t because a car was parked there.

“I have to pay to keep access to that entrance, and I don’t understand why there aren’t officers available at all times to deal with problems like this.”

The police complaint has been sent to Malaga’s provincial authorities, which will decide

whether to proceed with it.

According to the Citizen Safety Law, Mr Puyoles could be fined between 100-600 euros, but he said: “Let’s see what happens. The provincial administration could ignore it, but if they try to fine me, I will take this all the way to the top because I believe it is totally unfair.”

Juan Carlos said that if he’d known the outcome, he would never have commented on the social network.

“When I linked the comment to the Mayor, I was looking to get a response,” he added. “She came round to my house the next day to check on the ‘no parking’ sign.

“I don’t understand why the officers are so upset that I said they have a cup of coffee. I have a lot of friends who are in the police force. I was in the army, and I have always had the greatest respect for the security forces.”

Failing to respect those security forces, or publishing photographs of members of the police or armed forces on the internet, are punishable under the new security legislation, which came into force in July.

Hawking promotes 2016 Starmus show PHYSICIST Stephen Hawking is in Tenerife to officially launch next year’s third annual Starmus Festival.

Organiser Garik Israelian said the Professor, who will tour the Island and also visit the Canary Islands’ Astrophysics Institute (IAC), may give a speech during his three-week stay.

The trip from England was a lengthy affair for him, and Prof Hawking stopped off in Lanzarote and Gran Canaria before arriving here.

Israelian said Hawking is keen to invite some of the doctors who have treated him to the 2016 Starmus, to be held from 27th June 27 to 2nd July.

The Festival has already confirmed the presence of Nobel Prize winners Harold Kroto and Eric Betzig (Chemistry 1996 and 2014, respectively); biologists Carol Greider and Elizabeth Blackburn (Medicine shared in 2009); Robert Wilson and David Gross (Physics in 1978 and 2004, respectively).

Other Nobel Prize winners attending are Adam Riess and Brian Schmidt (shared Phys-

ics in 2011), and married couple Edvard and May-Britt Moser (both Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine in 2014).

Next year’s Festival theme is “Beyond the Horizon - Tribute to Stephen Hawking”

and also participating is evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, as well as Professor of Astronomy Steven Balbus, head of astrophysics at the University of Oxford,who was recognised in 2013 with the Shaw Prize in Astronomy.

Also participating in the Starmus Festival are astrophysicists Neil deGrasse Tyson, Kip Thorne, Martin Rees, Jill Tarter, Robert Williams and physicist Neil Turok, as well as astronauts Michael Lopez-Alegria, Garrett Reisman, Chris Hadfield and Russell Schweickart, and cosmonaut Sergey Volkov.

For richer or poorer, the world’s greatest powers meet again POPE Francis was greeted by President Obama and the First Family on the tarmac when he landed in Washington on Tuesday for his first US visit

It heralded the start of the 78-year-old Roman Catholic leader’s fiveday tour across DC, New York and Philadelphia, coinciding with the United Nations summit, which will welcome more than 100 world leaders in New York.

The President was on the tarmac with wife Michelle, daughters Malia and Sasha, and Michelle’s mother, Marian Robinson, to meet the pontiff at Joint Base Andrews.

A line of cardinals, bishops and archbishops also awaited the Pope, alongside huge crowds and a highschool band, playing music in his honour.

When the plane came to a halt and the red carpet was rolled out, there was complete silence!

There was a slightlyawkward delay as the Pope stood at the open door of the plane for more than two minutes, before being told it was time for his first touchdown in America. The hold-up was to allow his travelling press entourage to position themselves to witness it.

President Obama greeted the pontiff and introduced him to his family and Vice-President Joe Biden, before they walked down the line of dignitaries. The pair then got into separate motorcades.

The Pope’s vehicle was an Italian-made Fiat 500 and he quickly discarded a Jeep Wrangler Popemobile, also manufactured by Fiat Chrysler.

The pontiff, a native of Argentina, is the fourth Pope in history to visit the States. And, as he descended from the plane, it began to rain, which did not deter the crowds from bellowing: “Welcome to the USA!” President Obama performed a kind of bow

as he shook the Pope’s hand and leaned towards him to greet him.

Michelle also spoke with the Pope, who speaks limited English and has been giving most of his speeches in Spanish during the visit.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of onlookers will have lined the streets of Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York, hoping for a glimpse of the Pope.

He has made it clear that he does not agree with some of the principles upon which America is based, especially capitalism and consumerism, which, he says, are hurting the poor.

And unlike some US conservatives, he believes climate change is real - and that it’s all down to us!

The Pontiff has one consistent and abiding message: spend less, and help the poor. But that does not wash in America, no matter how much he is loved by millions of diehard catholics there.

And slick entrepreneurs will be hoping his visit is actually inspiring people to spend more.

For example, you can buy a toaster, complete with the Pope’s visit, to adorn your kitchen.

Or you might want to invest in your very own Pope doll, complete with Popemobile, or relax with a Pope Fran-

cis beer. Merchandise aside, the itinerary has been carefully designed to promote the Pope’s message of championing the poor of this world - even in the richest country of all!

Thousands of invited guests, including many Catholics, gathered on the White House lawn to receive Pope Francis on Wednesday.

And Obama told a prayer breakfast earlier this year: “Like millions of Americans, I am very much looking forward to welcoming Pope Francis to the United States.”

The two leaders met for the first time in March 2014 at the Vatican, and Obama has since been outspoken in his admiration for the 78-year-old native of Argentina.

Despite differences over abortion, the two have found common ground on such issues as US policy toward Cuba and Iran, climate change, and poverty and income inequality.

On Wednesday Pope Francis graced the Washington DC corridors of power, before heading off to the peripheries of society, among the homeless.

And, as in his other nine foreign trips, he has been highlighting the plight of the vulnerable. This time, however, it will not have washed with everyone in the mighty US of A!

Canarian broadband upgrade to enhance economic benefits

The 100 gigabits-persecond upgrade will ensure ultra-fast broadband services are available in the Canary Islands, meeting the surging demand for internet connectivity from residents and businesses like Surf Office.

Maria Jesus Almazor, Telefónica’s Regional Director for Southern Spain, said: “The additional capacity available with ASN’s ad-

vanced technology will contribute significantly in meeting the ongoing demand in the markets served by these systems.”

Philippe Dumont, President of AlcatelLucent Submarine Networks, says the increase in connections between the Spanish mainland

and the Canaries will enable growth in broadband traffic that will deliver economic benefits to the islands.

Game’s up for Downton DOWNTON Abbey, feted throughout as British TV at it best, flopped miserably at the Emmy Awards, despite being named in three categories.

The period drama, created and written by Julian Fellowes and now in its sixth and final series, is huge in the UK and America.

Yet it drew a blank at the glittering ceremony, as did other nominated British programmes in what is regarded as TV’s annual equivalent of the Oscars.

Top of the pile, after five years on air, was Game Of Thrones, which was named Best Television Drama series at the Los Angeles ceremony.

The fantasy series, broadcast on Sky Atlantic in the UK, won an unprecedented 12 awards of the night after being nominated for a an incredible 24.

The show also took home awards for writing, directing and for supporting actor, Peter Dinklage, to add to their impressive haul of eight Creative Emmys last week.

Dinklage, who embraced co-star Lena Headey before collecting his statuette, told the crowded Microsoft Theatre: “I was chewing gum. I wasn’t prepared because the other actors in my category awe me with their performances.”

Thrones co-creator David Benioff said after receiving the Best Drama prize from veteran US comedy actor Tracy Morgan: “Thank you HBO for believing in dragons.”

Morgan, critically injured in a car crash last year, received a standing ovation after his surprise appearance.

The night belonged to US shows, many broadcast

by HBO’s, with Washington comedy series Veep ending Modern Family’s reign after being named Best Com-

edy Series. Its star, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, won Best Comedy Actress for the fourth time for playing the egotistical Selina Meyer, while Tony Hale, who plays her bag man, was again named Best Comedy Supporting Actor.

Veep also clinched the Comedy Writing statuette for British writers Simon Blackwell, Amando Iannucci, Tony Roche.

Viola Davis became the first African-American to win a Drama Lead Actress Emmy for her role as a defence lawyer in How To Get Away With Murder.

“The only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity,” said Violas, to huge applause. “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”

Jon Hamm finally snared an Emmy for his lead role as Don Draper in the now-finished Mad Men, winning a standing ovation from the audience.

He told them: “It’s incredible and impossible for me personally to be standing here, so I want to thank the people I owe an incredible debt - families who have chosen for some reason to take me in and be nice to me. Thank you to everybody who watched the show and thank you for this.”

Frances McDormand kept things succinct when she scored Outstanding Lead Actress (in a limited series or a film) for her performance in the title role of Olive Kitteridge, which won six awards in total.

“We are all here because of the power of a story well told - and sometimes that is enough,” she said.

Bill Murray was the Outstanding Supporting Actor (in a limited series or a film) for his role in the show, but was not there to collect the gong.

A Mexican Mystery...

MANY Mexicans have no idea when or why the country celebrates its Independence Day, even though the green, white and red national flag colours are draped everywhere on 15th September each year.

It’s a night when even the least-patriotic Mexican celebrates with his fellow-countrymen, and when the President lets out a triumphant cry from the balcony of the National Palace: “Long live independence!”

But independence from whom? Some 51% of Mexicans have no

idea that the country won its independence from Spain more than 200 years ago, while 13% believe it is an American colony.

After last week’s patriotic festival and a nationwide hangover, Parametría, a Mexican research group which analyses public opinion, made party-goers blush when it published a national survey of 800 Mexican adults.

This year, even fewer citizens could answer the questions correctly. In 2009, when the organisation first launched the poll, 46% got it right. By April 2010, the bicentennial of the nation, that number had climbed to 53%.

But five years later, just 32% of those surveyed knew that Mexicans

fought to bring Spanish rule to its end, and thus became a sovereign nation.

The survey also asked participants whether Mexico would be better off if it still depended on Spain. A third said it would be worse off if it were still a Spanish colony, while 25% believe it would fare

Just Poppins back in time IT has been 50 years, and Disney has now decided to introduce another “Spoonful Of Sugar” to the big screen with a live action remake of Mary Poppins.

The 1964 film musical, starring Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyck, is a much-loved classic, renowned for its catchy songs and tap-dancing routines.

According to the informed Hollywood Reporter, the new tale will be set some 20 years after the original and will be based on the books

by PL Travers, who created Mary Poppins.

The film will again be a musical, although a revival of songs like Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is not guaranteed. It is not known who will step into Andrews’ iconic shoes for the lead role but Rob Marshall, who directed Into The Woods and Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

for Disney, will lead the project.

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who worked on Hairspray and Smash, will compose original songs for the film.

The relationship between Walt Disney and Ms Travers was famously rocky, as documented in the Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson

film Saving Mr Banks.

The British author did not want her books to be turned into animated musicals, and it is understood that Disney officials are working with her estate ahead of the new film.

Disney is also working on other remakes of classic films, including The Jungle Book, and an Aladdin prequel.

Around 25% could name historical figures from other periods, while 12% were unable to name anyone related to the War of Independence.

According to the survey, there is greater awareness of the history of independence in Mexico City than in the rest of the country. Around 46% of participants in the capital answered correctly, which was 32% higher than the rest of the nation. Still, 37% of Mexico City-dwellers said they knew nothing about that part of history.

Last week, Mexico celebrated the 205th anniversary of the War of Independence, which lasted from 1810 to 1821. The country was a Spanish colony from 1521 onward, when Hernán Cortés conquered the city of Mexico-Tenochtitlan.

THE Chinese Government´s recent decision to devalue the yuan, along with many other factors, is being cited as a sign of impending global recession.

Other factors include a multi-year price low in commodity markets; oil prices being down at an all-time low, and the likelihood of Iranian oil coming back into the market.

So can we expect a recession, or is it simply that these price developments reflect a widespread condition of excess supply, rather than

A global recession or golden opportunity? any general shortfall in demand?

The optimists within us might well say that rather than China´s position bringing impending doom and gloom to the market, opportunity is knocking.

If you already hold equities (shares, bonds, stakes etc), be prepared to see a downward turn in your portfolio this month.

China´s position has seen ALL markets worldwide follow a downward trend, but fear not, and DO NOT PANIC. For many, this could prove to be a blessing in disguise - and withdrawing funds is not the answer.

Commodity-producing countries such as Brazil

are certainly suffering because of low prices.

But many other parts of the world are better off, seeing lower input costs in manufacturing.

Lower oil prices are also resulting in lower diesel and petrol prices, boosting disposable incomes for consumers.

It is widely believed that the US will be the first major economy to raise interest rates, with much commentary centred on September as the likely starting point.

However, the recent further fall in the price of oil suggests that inflation levels will remain subdued for the foreseeable future.

Nevertheless, even if rates were to rise next month, it is likely to be a token increase, with

subsequent movements very slight indeed.

In the UK, inflation is also conspicuous by its absence, and any moves seem unlikely until well into next year.

So what does all this mean for YOU? Share prices have suffered a very sharp correction in the last few weeks, albeit after many stock markets reached all-time highs in the Spring.

Valuations are around the average for the last 20 years, so the current weakness offers a great entry point. Moreover, dividend yields remain well above Government bond yields, underlining the income attractions of equities.

Low commodity prices are likely to keep the lid on inflationary

pressures, removing the need to raise interest rates. This suggests that bond yields are likely to remain low for some time.

Therefore, while stock markets may remain volatile over the coming months, investors shouldn´t be afraid of taking advantage of the recent dip in prices to add to positions where they can.

In layman´s terms, if you have cash in the bank with an expected low yield, and you aren´t in any rush to utilise the funds, there has never been a better time to consider investing, medium-to-longterm, in the equities markets, with products available that have potential to achieve re-

turns in excess of bank interest rates.

Former Queen in line for Nobel Peace prizE THE former Queen of Spain has been nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize by an American university for her work in the field of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Access road work will cost 2m-euro

TENERIFE Cabildo has approved the first phase of a project to improve the access road to Teno Alto, in Buenavista del Norte.

The investment is around 940,000 euros and the decision was taken under the chairmanship of President Carlos Alonso.

“This is the first phase of work and will improve a road that is in poor condition. The project now goes to tender and we hope to award the work ASAP.” The complete project will be divided into three phases, with a total investment of some two million euros.

The work consists of

cleaning and resurfacing the road, extending the width of the road and sidings, securing stability of the esplanade supporting the output side of the road, and road-sign protection.

Meanwhile, the Cabildo’s Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries division has created a new “Small-scale fishing” mark, whose main objective is to promote the consumption of fishery products from local Tenerife waters.

The division is also implementing a certification system that guarantees the origin of the fresh, local product, identifying catering establishments offering seafood from the Island and identifies the associated product quality.

Confirmation that Queen Sophia was in the frame came just before the opening of a Malaga conference on Neurodegenerative Diseases, which the queen was scheduled to attend.

Jesus Avila, a leading Spanish expert, told journalists at a press conference that Queen Sofia had been put forward for the prize by an American university, which he didn’t name.

He added that many people be revealed on 9th October.

Queen Sofia, whose husband, Juan Carlos I, abdicated in June 2014 and whose son Felipe VI is now King of Spain, has shown an ongoing dedication to work related to the issues raised for society by Alzheimer’s.

Her Queen Sofia Foundation, which she set up in 1977, now has an Alzheimer’s Centre dedicated to research and training in the field, and to finding ways of helping patients.

Nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize can be made by a list of

qualified people and there is no limit on the number of individuals or organisations which can be suggested as recipients in any one year.

This year there are 273 nominations.

In 1990, the Princess Royal was nominated for the prize for her work with Save the Children.

And in 1997, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the International

Campaign to Ban Landmines, in which Diana, Princess of Wales, had been heavily involved.

The presentation came just months after her death.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner usually travels to Oslo to collect his/ her award, traditionally presented by the Norwegian Nobel Committee Chairman in the presence of the coun-

try’s Royal Family, led

by King Harald V and Queen Sonja.

Patagonia: Earth’s Secret Paradise BBC2, 21.00

Episode 1, Fire and Ice, follows the backbone of the Andes Mountains on a 2000km journey from the North of Patagonia to Cape Horn.

Immersing us in the lives of rarely seen animals, we first witness intimate and dramatic footage of illusive Pumas, the most southerly big cats on the planet, as they hunt for uniquely Patagonian camels – Guanacos.

In the cold and rarely filmed rainforests live a strange collection of miniature animals: from Pudu – the world’s smallest family of deer – whose fawns would fit comfortably in human hands; to the minute 20mm long Darwin’s Frog – where the males carry the tadpoles for months in their vocal sacks.

Patagonia is also the home of Jurassic forests where prehistoric Monkey Puzzle trees from the time of dinosaurs grow on brutal volcanic landscapes and their seeds attract colourful parrots.

Ten celebrity ‘Benchmarkers’ help Jimmy Carr and Joey Essex go head-to-head at the start of the show to determine who will become the main contestant. The other 10 celebrities answer the tricky numerical general knowledge questions and their answers set the benchmark. Rugby World Cup Live: England v Wales ITV1, 19.15

PIt’s the most anticipated game of the pool stages as England take on Wales at Twickenham. The loss of Leigh Halfpenny and Rhys Webb to injury on the eve of the tournament has undoubtedly affected the Welsh build-up but, in the likes of Sam Warburton, Alun Wyn Jones and George North, coach Warren Gatland can still call on the core of the side that took Wales to the semi finals of the World Cup four years ago. Stuart Lancaster’s England have steered clear of major injuries and, with Anthony Watson, Jonathan Joseph and Jonny May in prime form, have plenty of exciting attacking options.

With Australia still to play for both sides, a loss for either would seriously dent their chances of progression to the knockout stages. John Inverdale is joined by Sir Clive Woodward, Jonny Wilkinson and Gareth Thomas in the studio with commentary from Nick Mullins, Lawrence Dallaglio and Shane Williams.

First Humans: The Cave Discovery Channel 4, 20:00

This documentary charts an astounding archaeological investigation that has discovered the remains of an entirely new species of human ancestor. Showing as part of the Secret History strand, First Humans: The Cave Discovery follows an expedition by an international team of experts, led

by Professor Lee Berger from the University of the Witwatersrand, as they recover bone fragments from a deep and nearly inaccessible cave in South Africa.

The remains were first discovered by two cavers in 2013. After excavating the fossils, a huge challenge in itself, scientists conducted extensive analysis of more than 1,500 bone fragments.

They were astonished to discover the remains belonged to a new human ancestor that they have named Homo naledi. The programme documents one of the greatest fossil finds of our time.

For one week only, Lorraine viewers will join presenter Lorraine Kelly in the studio each morning instead of watching the show at home from their living rooms.

In this last episode we journey through the final months in the womb - a time when we grow strong and develop the vital survival tools that we need to take our first breath. Presented by Michael Mosley. For most, this is when our cartilage changes to form a skeleton of over 200 bones - but very occasionally this doesn’t go to plan. We meet Jannelly, who was born with no bones and was saved from the brink of death by a drug trial, which made medical history by creating ‘manufactured bone’ for the first time.

Our brains develop at an extraordinary rate by week 27, with an estimated 100 billion new connections every day, creating the foundations for our memory banks. With superhuman recall, we meet ‘memory man’ Joey, whose brain is incapable of forgetting anything he experiences in his lifetime. Exploring this phenomenon, Michael also asks whether children can hear and recall early memories whilst still in the womb.

Looking at how external forces can affect us in the womb, we meet Lal and Freddie, who have similar lifestyles but whose mothers had different diets; and we examine the results of a unique study by Dr. Suzanne King into whether unborn children can be affected by stress.

Finally, as this incredible journey nears its end, we witness the critical moment of the first breath and the beginning of a new life.

The Hairy Bikers’ Northern Exposure BBC2, 20:00

Dave and Si arrive in Sweden, home to some of the world’s top chefs. The Bikers get straight back to basics with the Sami people, who introduce them to the traditional techniques of smoking to cure meat, manufacturing their own hunting knives, and fishing to stock up for the coming winter. Inspired by it all, the bikers treat their hosts to a berry and almond rice pudding and put together their own Nordic reindeer and fish dishes before hitting the road to meet Lars, one the last surviving forest Sami folk.

In the true community spirit of Sweden, the boys are also invited to a house-jumping dinner in the village of Voullerim for a feast of local specialities and a cultural introduction to the Swedes. In a country well known for its love of nature and design talent, the boys toast the end of their northern Swedish adventure in the architecturally stunning tree house rooms of the Tree Hotel.

Simon Schama explores the history of British portraiture, revealing the stories behind some of the most compelling images in British art.

The series examines the ways this unique art form has been used as a statement of power, a declaration of love, to promote fame, to offer insight into the artists themselves and to capture the faces of the British people.

In the first episode in the series, Simon Schama explores the eternal power of portraiture. Before we can walk, before we can talk, we become readers of faces, and throughout our lives face reading helps us to navigate the world.

This primal engagement with the face makes portraiture one of the most compelling forms of art. Beginning with an exploration of how a portrait that was commissioned to celebrate Winston Churchill’s 80th birthday ended in disaster for both artist and sitter, Schama discovers how portraits can involve a battle for control, and - from the destruction of the faces of Christ and the Virgin during the Reformation, to Elizabeth I’s fabulous feats of image making - demonstrates the importance of portraiture in fostering loyalty.

Schama shows how royalists and parliamentarians fought over the image of the executed Charles I during the Civil War and how the aristocracy used portraiture to assert their dominion over the realm in the 18th century. Through the pioneering political cartoons of James Gillray, he explores how the powerful lost control of their image to the snigger of the streets. Simon looks at how photography allowed Queen Victoria to rebrand the monarchy as a modern family and discusses the role Margaret Thatcher’s rigid control of her image played in launching her political career.

Midwinter of the Spirit ITV1, 21.00 A murder, a desecrated church and the apparent ‘suicide’ of a clergyman, sends Merrily on a quest for answers. Although she suspects a Satanic group may be at work, nothing can prepare Merrily for what she uncovers next.

Despite the evidence, Merrily doesn’t believe for one minute that Dobbs’ took his own life and when her services are required to bless a desecrated church, she can’t help but think that, after Dobbs and the crucifixion, this sacrificial act is more than just coincidence. DCI Annie Howe, on the other hand, doesn’t feel that a dead crow is a police matter.

As Huw Owen guides Merrily through the ceremony of lesser exorcism she ‘sees’ the evil Denzil Joy and runs from the church. Shaken.

Dobbs’ cleaner claims that Dobbs was a good man who deteriorated after a visit from a bearded stranger. She would hear chanting coming from the TV and he forever had his head in a book about Medieval Hereford Bishop, St Thomas Cantilupe. Having promised to return Edna’s key, Merrily lets herself into Dobbs’ home in search of clues.

All they need to do is match each other’s answers, but it’s not as easy as it seems.

In round 1, the celebrity is asked three questions whilst their partner is in the soundproof booth, unable to hear their answers. When the celebrity has answered all three questions, their partner comes out of the booth and is asked the same three questions. they need to match their answers to score a point.

Round 2 is the paddle game.

Each couple is separated by a screen so that they are unable to see each other.

They are asked six questions, and have to match answers by holding up a paddle relating to either themself or their partner. If they hold up the same paddle, they have a match and win a point. The couple with the most matches at the end of the two rounds goes through to play in the final. The two losing couples each leave with £5000 for their chosen charity. All couples leave with a crystal encrusted carriage clock.

When he discovers the truth he heads off to talk it all through with Judy. Meanwhile, Leo is repelled

by Geoff’s creepy and inappropriate interest in Judy and ends up walking away from the job. Pam comes home to an unwelcome surprise.

Top Square is worth a fortune TAGGING our three-monthly bash on to the Emerald Lounge´s third birthday party turned out to be one of our better ideas.

The grand total raised was a staggering 1,634 euros and, without doubt, our Top Square record, so our thanks to entertainers Colin Stevens, Debbie Diamond, Spencer Robson, Robbie Dominic and Nik Page. Not forgetting young Coco, who collected 160 euros for singing Tomorrow from Annie!

Thanks also to all the bar-owners and staff for accommodating everyone - not a seat to be had! And some even had time to perform for us, such as Ann and Brian from The Tavern,

and the Emerald’s Caroline and Shirley with our now-famous Irish dancing display.

A big thank-you to Bill and Heather for the huge teddy, and Becky for getting all those people to guess his name, and also to Derrick Lynes and Vicki for their invaluable help.

THE annual John Lowe golf day, in aid of cancer charity Amate, was another roaring success.

Twenty-four teams took part in perfect conditions on Amarilla Golf and again, a total of over 10,000 euros was raised.

The Division 1 winners were: The Hole in the Wall team of Fergal

Flaherty, Joe Read, Phil James and Simon Gabbard, who scored 58.8 points.

The Division 2 honour belonged to The Dog Lovers team of Jeff and Pam Cowan, Tony Bolsover and Norma Couchman, who totalled 55.7 points.

The Dinistia Nearest the Pin on hole 5 was won by Becks, and the Revs Motors-sponsored Straightest Drive was claimed by Jeff Cowan.

Lowe, the three-time world darts champion, said: “What started out 11 years ago as a fun day - 12 guys playing golf for a few euros - has now become a major fixture in Tenerife.

“Next year’s date is already fixed: 17th September 17th. Our main sponsor, Aberdeen Property Leasing, has agreed to sponsor again and Sebastian St James, sponsor of the Hole in One, has also

agreed to be a part of the event.”

Rescued dogs on mend REMEMBER the 28 dogs rescued from an English couple in Guia de Isora a little over a month ago, who were all in a dreadful state?

Happily, they are all on the road to recovery and are now up for adoption.

They have all received the necessary treatment from our vet,nd if you are interested in adopting one, please call or visit the refuge.

Mary’s winter woollies Mary Irvine has kindly been out with her knitting needles again and has started to make some lovely woolly jackets for the dogs, which are much appreciated, especially for when the dogs travel to Germany.

Firemen to rescue Granadilla firemen

have rescued two gorgeous puppies from a disused water tank.

We do not know how they ended up there, but they are now safe at the refuge and will also be up for adoption in a few weeks.

Help reduce numbers August was a busy month for dogs coming into the refuge, together with a reduced number of adoptions, which is normal over the summer. So please visit us if you are looking to adopt a pet. Contact us on 922 778 630, from 8am-5pm, for more information.

Cuddly Bella after home, sweet home

She gave birth in our care and her babies have all grown up now and have homes, so we are looking for a special home for their mum.

By Jamie Droo REGULAR readers will be aware that for the last few weeks, the entertainment page has been focused on the Tenerife Entertainment Awards.

And more recently, the nominees’ specific subject has provided the content.

This coming week (ending on 1st Oct) is the final period for voting, so it’s a last chance to do your bit to make sure the right performers get their reward.

There are two ways in which to vote: either by sms text message to the number (0034) 639 101 311 - texts are charged at your normal network rate. If you are reading online from outside the Canary Islands and wish to participate, make sure you use the country code.

The second way is to fill in the online voting form, which you will find at www.teaawards. com This is a simple process, which will take you no more than a couple of minutes.

This week, I am covering the Best Band category. To be a successful band anywhere in the world, there are so many dynamics to address.

First and foremost is the skill set of each individual musician.

A band can only be as strong as its weakest link, so the ability and talent has to be of a certain standard.

Then comes their ability to play alongside their fellow musos. It’s no good having Brian May on guitar if you have a drummer who can’t keep strict tempo.

In most bands, the relationship between individuals on stage also has to gel. They have to like one another.

The Gallagher brothers are a prime example of self-destruction at top level. Oasis were

an iconic band, but the volatility of the brothers’ relationship spilled on to the stage and, ultimately, it all ended in disaster.

There are a lot less pressures here in Tenerife, though, than at the top level of the recording industry. In this year’s category, there are two types of band. The resident and the touring band.

Three out of the four are resident in one place, and Crush are a band who gig in different venues. All members of each band have performed as part of other bands, too, with the exception of The Dubliner Band, whose members have formed the band’s make-up for years.

The Vagabonds are a rock band who have had a few different members, but most have been with the line-up for a lengthy period.

The fourth band in the category are Masquerade, the only band comprising European musicians, with the others drawing their talent from the British and Irish talent pool.

All these bands have large repertoires and different styles, but the

dynamics are always the same. Each has a personality and all the individual musicians can play their respective instruments to the highest standard.

The guitarists in all four bands are fabulous showmen, and make watching them play a feature of great focus. There will always be something special about live music that stands apart from the processed backing tracks used by solo artistes and duos.

Not to say there is anything sub-standard about the use of backing tracks. But when every sound you hear through the PA system is being produced right there and then, it can make for a unique musical experience every time.

Bands are able to extend, shorten, mix up and alter any song at any time during play.

Mind you, this can only happen if the musicians involved communicate well on stage.

For instance, musicians speak a language of their very own, and it may just take a signatory twirling of the finger in a circular motion to let every member know that the song

is rocking - so let’s go round again.

Generally, every musician would then go back the start of the last phrase and keep the song going for longer. But with backing tracks this is obviously impossible, so the versatility of a band is a marvellous thing to behold.

I have seen all of these musicians do different things like this with songs, even dropping in spontaneously to another song, sometimes in a comedic way. And when the rest of the musicians follow and just ad-lib, it cements their audience’s con-

fidence in their talent and ability.

Watching a band will always be one of my favourite pastimes on a night out here in Tenerife. All four have immense talent in their ranks and they all have a huge following.

No strangers to the win are the Dubliner Band. Crush have also become hugely popular over the last few years, and are highly-regarded among their peers.

It is good to see Masquerade in the mix as well, and, of course, the Vagabonds, who have a fan base that flock to see them every year.

My best memory of a

band here in Tenerife was at the TEAs when the live category was Best Band, and Kick took to the stage. I don’t believe anyone will ever top the performance of Johnny Grennan, Stevie C and Didi as they stormed the Castillio San Miguel by performing their set in green mankinis and cowboy boots. Genius!

And along with their talent as musicians, they bagged the award with the live vote.

What surprises might be in store this year?

Who knows, but it’s getting closer - and it is going to be a fabulous afternoon.

Martini 1 restaurant , Las Americas

Martini’s great eight to savour YOU always anticipate a genuine feast when you visit one of Martini’s eight restaurants. And so you should because the food, the service and the ambience are all first-class.

We were recently invited to dine in the first Martini restaurant, next to the chemist, close to Banco Santander in Aptos Colon 2, central Las Americas. And, as usual, it really was an enjoyable experience.

The group is owned by Tino Amadei and Peter Elbaum, both from Sweden’s capital, Stockholm.

Tino came to Tenerife in 1992, having studied at S t o c k h o l m’ s main catering college, and is multi-lingual.

He took over the original Martini Bar in 1999 - now Martini 1 - transformed it into a restaurant.

Peter was working in the family shoe business, with 50 shops all over the world, which

he sold and joined Tino in 2011 to form a new business, increasing the Martini group rapidly.

All their chefs are trained locally at Martini 1, then placed around the group’s other restaurants.

T h e b o y s c l a s s their food as international with an Italian touch, and they change their menus regularly - they are more or less the same in all eight establishments, apart from a couple of variations.

For example, in Torviscas at Martini 3, they feature more fish and

seafood as it is on the seafront. And in the new Siam Mall shopping centre, they cater for the local people with suitable dishes. On arrival, we were welcomed by Tino and Peter, who showed us to a table set up especially for us. We started with a drink and a little chat, and then proceeded to browse the exceptional menu.

We had fresh bread with home-made ali-oli/ (garlic mayonnaise) and olives.

We asked the boys for recommendations, and they advised us to try the mussels, which were in a tomato and garlic white wine sauce with black pepper chilli. We followed this home-made duck pate with onion and mango chutney. Again, delicious!

Our main course, again recommended, was sea bass with caramelised orange and chilli sauce, followed by chicken breast

with cream spinach and a coating of cheese, ham and mozzarella, all accompanied with fresh veg and garlic potatoes.

Needless to say, it was exceptional and a delight to the taste buds!

And for dessert? The dessert menu. included home-made Banoffee pie – bananas, cream and toffee with a crunchy biscuit base - or you could try the gorgeous Crème Brulee flambéed at your table.

But after such a big meal, we settled for icecream, which came more as a huge dessert rather than the plain ice-cream we anticipated.

The whole experience was fantastic and Martini 1 (and the other seven) really is worth a visit.

They even do special prices for two people. You can have an Entrecote steak with a choice of veg and potatoes with a bottle of wine or sangria for just 26 euros. Or why not try a Sole Flipper for two in white wine, fresh veg and a choice of potatoes with a bottle of wine or sangria for 33 euros.

Check the board outside for what offers there are at the time.

The service was excellent and the staff extremely attentive.

of Activate Sports Club M - Music: I cannot emphasise strongly enough the importance of music, the incomparable effect it has on our mood - able to lift our spirits when we think we can’t go on, or remind us of a past love/childhood memory when we feel melancholy.

Whether you’re cooking, going for a walk, singing in the shower or dancing with friends, music forms an essential part of everyday life.

N - No: Take this word out of your vocabulary and watch what a difference it makes to your life. Choose to eliminate negativity, doubt, criticism and anger with a more positive, optimistic outlook. Learn to say Yes to life and the change you will experience is almost magical. Too often, we let fear talk us out of important decisions, only to regret it for years. You can do anything you set your mind to.

O - Organic: Wherever possible, buy organic.

There are many misleading claims when it comes to the food industry, and many are just designed to trick you out of money.

Organic food is not one of them, however. These

days we are consuming more pesticides than ever, and there are hundreds of studies on the negative impact this has on our health.

Organic fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat are especially recommendable. If you have the choice, going organic is money well spent. Your body will thank you for it.

P - Pilates: Adapted to each person’s individual needs, rather like a medical prescription, Pilates is a fantastic, all-body workout for absolutely everyone.

Old, young, injured, pregnant … there are possibilities for everyone.

Pilates centres on strengthening the core muscles, combined with correct breathing to tone, increase flexibility, improve posture and increase concentration and balance. Ana Lozano Pilates at Activate offers a selection of fantastic mat and equipmentbased classes.

Q - Quinoa (Keenwah): A well-known “superfood”, this semibland whole grain is high in protein and low in carbohydrates and is, quite simply, nutritional gold. Use it instead of rice or pasta at least once a week.

R - Rest: Getting enough rest and sleep is every bit as important as diet and exercise when it comes to staying healthy. Among the many proven benefits of adequate sleep are: better memory and

concentration; keeping a stable weight and metabolism; better mood; lower rates of depression; improved immune system and a healthier heart. You’re not lazy when you lie on the sofa – you’re taking care of your body!

S - Swimming: One of the best all-round sports ever (and my personal favourite), swimming is a fantastic way to exercise the entire body. It is a low-impact workout that uses every muscle group, improving overall body tone, while placing no additional stress on joints (great for arthritis sufferers).

T - Time: There are 24 hours in a day. How we use them is entirely up to us, but the most common excuse,“I don’t have time” (to exercise, prepare healthy food, etc) is just not true.

Make exercise and healthy living one of your priorities, as it should be, and set aside at least 30 minutes a day for some physical activity. When you’re in the habit, it will become an effortless routine.

U - Underweight: Many people talk about the obesity epidemic, but few mention another, equally important, worry: those who fall well

below their BMI (Body Mass Index). Being drastically underweight is very bad news for your body, and can lead to brittle bones, fainting, periods stopping altogether for women and even death. There are many nutritional programmes to help you gain weight in a sensible way. Please ask me for more information if you’re interested.

V - Vegetables: The more the merrier. Pile your plate high and eat as much and as many as you possibly can.

Vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients.

For optimum nutritional value, eat them raw or

steamed, and pick as many colours as you can, from the darkest green to the brightest reds and yellows.

W - Water: Our bodies are 70% water. Dehydration can lead to a number of health problems, from poor circulation and headaches to constipation, dizziness and low blood pressure.

Make sure you drink at least two litres of water a day (more in very hot weather, or if you’re exercising). Tea and coffee don’t count, and neither does beer!

The key for living to a ripe old age...

THE average person in England is now expected to live into his or her eighties, because their life expectancy has risen by 5.4 years since 1990.

A study carried out by Public Health England (PHE) found that the life span increased from

75.9 years to 81.3 years between 1990 and 2013.

The gains were greater for men, who are expected to live an extra 6.4 years compared with 25 years ago.

But in the main, women still live longer, the figures showing an average life expectancy for females of 83.2 years, compared with 79.5 years for males.

The increase has been ascribed to a slowdown

over the last two decades in the number of deaths from cardiovascular disease, stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

But while life expectancy has grown for the general population, large inequalities remain for people living in deprived areas.

The study found that despite having the same health and social-care system as the rest of the

country, regions such as the North East and North West are ranked among the worst-performing areas for life expectancy.

The study, published in The Lancet, shows poor diet and smoking are the biggest risks for premature death among people in England.

Co-author Dr Adam Briggs said: “Life expectancy in 2013 for those living in the most de-

prived areas was still lower than those in lessdeprived areas enjoyed in 1990.

“How deprived you are is the key driver of these differences, rather than where you live. Therefore, deprivation and its causes need to be tackled wherever they occur.”

Professor John Newton, Public Health England’s Chief Knowledge Officer, described wide-

ranging causes of inequality as “deep-rooted and persistent, and lie largely outside the healthcare system”.

But he added: “Preventatives services do help. In terms of the NHS, we need to make sure that preventative services are available to people, regardless of their circumstances, so that we do not get a difference in uptake, vaccination and screening.”

A whale of a good time

By Vanessa Vee TENERIFE is famous for a number of things: the climate, Mount Teide and the whales and dolphins, to name a few. We are so lucky here because we live in one of a few places in which you will find both whales and dolphins in their natural habitat.

The sea temperatures and depths, which are ideal living and mating conditions, makes it an all-year-round place for them to live.

One of the most popular excursions here is to set sail into the Atlantic and admire these beautiful creatures in their own surroundings.

There are numerous ways to do it: onboard pirate ships, small charter, large boats, glassbottom boats or catamarans. But why not do something a little special.

Abrazo offers that extra something. Yes, it is a boat trip like the others, only more exclusive.

Once onboard, there will be no more than 12 passengers. You have plenty of room to relax, sunbathe or shelter from the sun, and the only crew is the captain.

And from the fridges,

you are welcome to help yourself to a drink, which includes a glass of champagne. If you are feeling hungry, food is also included.

So, as you leave the harbour in search of the whales and dolphins, you can do this in the knowledge that you will not be cramped together, or bothered by anyone on board. And as it is a smaller craft, you can get really up close to the whales and dolphins.

The creatures themselves are natural showoffs and love to perform to an audience, so you really will get a birdseye view of them in action.

The excursion also allows you to swim in a small bay or, if this is not your thing, you can just sit back and relax on board.

Having been on the Island for many years and having tried various types of boat trips, I feel that this one really makes you feel that little bit special because it is so relaxed and welcoming on board.

When people ask me what I would recommend to do on the Island of Tenerife, the first two things I mention and urge people to do is go to Mount Teide and also experience a whales and dolphins’ trip.

Not only is this a unique opportunity because it is also a fantastic way to see these creatures and can be enjoyed by both the young and old alike.

On the theme of dol-

phins, you can get up close and personal with them at Aqualand. The water park, based in Playa de Las Americas, is not only home to an abundance of water rides but it has a daily dolphin show.

The park has also opened up its Dolphinarium, where you can learn more about these wonderful animals and have the chance to interact with them.

The park has a large group of bottlenose dolphins, which haswon them the Best Show in the World award at IMATA (International Marine Animal Trainers’ Association).

The Dolphinarium is fortunate to be highly successful in the reproduction of the bottlenose dolphin in an enclosed environment.

And to date, 15 dolphins have been born in the facilities, ensuring the continuity of the TursiopsTruncatus breed.

Inside the park, you can visit the “Dolphin Planet”, where you will find important information about the history, characteristics, physiology and habitat of this magnificent species.

Enjoy the senior style

“WE don’t want you to look like a grandma,” is what one of my clients told me this week after repeating a conversation she’d had with her grandchildren.

So I asked: “What is it they didn’t want you to do with your hair?”

The answer was to go grey, or to have a perm.

So what makes a mature lady sometimes give up not only on her hair but on her image, too?

If she had been into fashion at one time and always did her hair, what stopped her continuing as she got older?

I believe some women tend to feel they are invisible after the age of 50, and that no one looks any more.

But that’s nothing further from the truth, as far as I’m concerned.

I still believe a woman SHOULD still bother and try her hardest to look the best she can for her age. Okay, we aren’t trying to hold back the clock, or make you look ridiculous.

It’s just a matter of helping you maintain your overall style, without you seeming to be trying too much. No one likes the feeling of getting older, but it comes to us all and we either face it or run from it.

If you feel as though your style is dragging

you down, always talk to your stylists. They will help and advise you of the different possibilities, and show you what can be done to change your image around.

Try not to go for longer than shoulder-length hair as this rarely suits, and don’t opt for too much volume because this can make your hair look dated and tired.

Instead, go for bolder lines that fall into place, or razor cuts that soften the profile. Think about

your colour, too, and never opt for anything darker as this can draw away the colour from your face – unless, of course, you want to apply make-up daily.

It’s all about finding the right cut and colour for you because both have to tie in with your whole image.

I spent a long time looking for images to inspire you, but I came across very few that inspired me.

Does this show a lack of interest by hairdressers in the more mature woman? In fact, I actually found few styles that I would show to any of my clients without them turning into “Granny”

By Val Sainsbury A PSYCHOLOGIST believes that allowing toddlers to play on iPads is tantamount to child abuse because it is “playing Russian roulette” with their development.

Dr Richard House warned that devices such as tablets are “unnecessary, inappropriate and harmful” for young children.

The doctor, a former senior lecturer in early childhood at Winchester University, is adamant: “Parents should proceed with caution to avoid a developmental catastrophe.”

Dr House, who founded the Early Childhood Action (ECA) organisation and is one of the “early-years” advisors supporting the Save Childhood Movement’s Too Much Too Soon Campaign, spoke out amid mounting evidence of youngsters’ addiction to screens.

wrote in the Nursery World magazine that suggestions of babies and toddlers using iPads were “deeply disturbing”.

Electronic images, he said, would lead to an “indirect and distorted experience of the world”.

The doctor added: “The real, human-relational and natural world is challenging for all humans understand.

“To confuse children when they have hardly begun to get a handle on this world, by introducing them to virtual, techno-magical worlds, is surely an absurd reversal of the natural order of things.”

He pointed to a recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics that children under two should not use screen-based technology at all - and that access for older children should be limited.

Dr House also cited Dr Lee Hadlington, an ICT researcher at De Montfort University, Leicester, who recently admitted: “We don’t know what’s actually happening to our cognition when we are using this

technology, and that’s the important thing”.

Dr House wrote: ‘If this is the case with adults, how much more is it relevant to young children, whose brains are still at very early stages of development?

“It seems that the arrogance of modern technology (together with ruthless commercialism) knows no bounds.

On the basis of what I’ve argued here, giving iPads to babies is tantamount to child abuse akin to playing Russian roulette with children’s development.”

But Professor Annette Karmiloff-Smith, of the University of London’s Birkbeck Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, argued in Nursery World that the “potential positive impact on child development” of touchscreens and TVs should be explored”.

The controversy followed a poll this week for Channel 4 News that found 47% of parents believe children spend too much time in front of screens, and 43% feel this amounts to an emotional dependency.

And up there with the best of them was Top Shop, which stands comparison with all the best designers, including Versace and many others, who showed that the UK is one of the places to showcase what we could be wearing next year.

Talking of Vogue, Anna Wintour, cast her everknowing eye over the events.

Stars came out in their droves, as did royalty, of course. Anyone who was anyone wanted a front seat for what has become one of the highlights on everyone’s fashion calendar.

Milan has glamour, Paris its chicness and NewYork is the apple of all that is fashion. But London to me is where fashion starts - not in the salons of the fashion houses but on the streets.

This is where most designers gather their inspiration, so it’s bowler hat’s off to you, London, for making this year’s event so memorable.

A-team plan comes together

THE last couple of seasons have seen Division One in the Direct Telecom Pool League more or less become a monopoly between two teams. but this year the gap seems to have closed.

This is being demonstrated admirably by Dreamers A, who normally start slowly. But this time around they are on fire. On Tuesday, they had a tough away game against Palms B and, in the opening sessions, there was nothing between the two teams.

The visitors took the first session 3-1, only for Palms B to take the second session by the same scoreline. Poised at 4-4, it could have gone either way but Dreamers dug deep.

Tommy took his third frame of the night to put them in front and they never looked back, taking all of the remaining games confidently for another win.

Unfortunately the Dreamers’ success didn’t take them back to the top of the table because that position is still occupied by Gaffers A.

They had a derby game against Gaffers B, with bar-bragging rights up for grabs. However,Neil and his team had no need to worry as they fell just one frame short of whitewashing the young Gaffers B pretenders to the crown.

Treehouse A, another team going well, welcomed Tenerife Hammers C to Chayofa. The visitors will have been happier with the first session with Bobby and Tony both winning early frames.

But Treehouse stepped up a gear and, apart from a further two dropped frames, they were in control of the match and took another victory.

It was another mixed night for the Amarilla Golf teams. The Terrace Bantams flirted with relegation last season, while the Roosters finished mid-table. But this time around they have swapped places.

The Bantams had a home tie against Rewind A, who have had an up-and-down season. The visitors took first blood, but Bantams struck back with five frames in a row.

Rewind won two late on to make it 5-3 going into the final session.

cent weeks. This was always going to be a cagey game, and so it proved with neither team able to open a decent gap,. A draw seemed likely, but Eric was the Potters’ superstar, winning the final frame and the points for the home team.

In Division Two, we welcomed newcomers Hoppys B, who had a baptism of fire with a home game against Hoppys A. It would have been an excellent way to put down an early marker and take points off your stablemates. But the script didn’t go to plan. The A team,

frame, and, fortunately for Mal (after a poor game), Sparky held his nerve to take the frame and a Bantams’ win.

Roosters had gone on their travels to Silencio for a match against Exiles A. Bearing in mind they had suffered two whitewashes in a row, you could excuse the away team for being nervy.

They looked a much improved side, though, and the games were

close. But they fell just short, with Exiles having enough in the tank to get over the line for the points.

After a shaky start, Phoenix Pensioners (sorry, Phoenix Potters), returned to winning ways recently, and a home game against Bluebell A beckoned.

The visitors, new to this division, picked up a couple of early wins but have been finding the going tough in re-

laden with experience, never looked troubled and dropped just three frames on their way to victory.

Crown B, also a relatively new team, are already making headway up the table. They had a trip to El Medano to meet Sabores, who are still looking for their first points.

They are improving with each game, but with a couple of experienced league players in the Crown B ranks, it was a tough match for them, with Bounty Hunter Greg completing a hat-trick. Keep going Sabores, those first points are coming!

IT’S getting even harder to be an Oasis Fm Fantasy League manager. Players whom nobody had really considered to are coming good each week, with decent points’ hauls, and the majority of the superstars are still underperforming.

Goals in this game score the most points, and many teams are loaded with expensive strikers. That means sacrifices have been made in midfield or defence. But the trouble is

that the hot-shot strikers, for the most part, are wide of the target.

There was no standout performance this week, which is reflected in the point-scoring team of the week, and it’s what you would call a proper mixed bag.

Chelsea who were back to winning ways, contributed two players, and after that it was somewhat of a freefor-all, the rest of the team made up of players from Stoke, Bournemouth, Norwich, Swan-

sea, Leicester, Man City, Watford, Southampton and Man Utd. Saints had the highest pointscorer, with Graziano Pellé bringing in a total of 13.

It is as you were in the league, with Paul Plowman’s Just 4Fun staying in top spot, although his lead has been cut to six points.

He now has a total score of 321 points, still just ahead of Frank Devaney and his Baines on Toast team, whose Riyad Mahrez again

scored well to keep him in the hunt.

Team of the Week didn’t amass a huge score but, in a low week, a 68-point total was still impressive so hat-tip to A.C. Filbert’s, managed

by Kev Heggs.

Mahrez, from his beloved Leicester City, contributed well. He picked up the 13 points Pellé scored. And his captain, Eden Hazard, got him a further 20 points towards his total.

No worries for Warriors!

HAVING won the Division 2 title last season to earn promotion to the top flight, you could have forgiven Waterfall Warriors for finding it quite tough. But not so!

They now sit comfortably in sixth spot following a last-rubber win over close rivals Exiles Bar, whose Nathan hit two maximums - an ideal warm-up for his bid to become Division 1 singles champion on stage tonight (Friday.

Waterfall’s Wayne replied with a 180 of his own as the Warriors continued their promising start.

Tom hit a maximum and Matt checked out with a 114 as Gaffers turned the tables on Boothen Titans, while Hoppys Bar put

seven past the Playboys. Leaders Boothen Army dropped just one point at Palms Sports Bar, and The Phoenix dropped none at home against Emerald Lounge, although the visitors’ Tosh struck his first 180.

Bar 180 B get comeback award of the week after turning a 2-3 deficit into a 5-3 victory over Palms Pool bar, whose Sandy notched his first maximum.

Summerlands 2 were given a warm welcome as they turned out for their first match in Division 2. But the fixture list pitched them against unbeaten league leaders Phoenix Flights, who made it 15 out of 15 with a 6-2 success.

Spear Chuckers showed no mercy at Ourplace Playgirls, dishing out a 7-1 thrashing, while Picassos held on to third place with a solid 6-2 win over Waterfall B.

Suso shows the way Llagostera 0 CD Tenerife 2

By Roscoe IT wasn’t pretty ... but boy, was it needed! Two fine second-half goals from Suso gave Tenerife a first away win since March, and their first three points of the season.

It was a poor first half from both sides and the knives were being sharpened for manager Raul Agne, who already knew he would be fired if he didn’t win.

He started with Alberto alongside Vitolo and in the second half, especially, Tenerife had a bit more grit. It will be interesting to see if first-choice Aitor Sanz returns this weekend because young Alberto did little wrong.

Tenerife were livelier after the break and got

their reward from the captain on the hour mark. As I’ve mentioned a few times already this season, Suso doesn’t seem the same player, and maybe his knee is worse than we think.

The surgery in the summer has certainly reduced his movement, yet doubled the advantage with 20 minutes to go, and the game was safe.

Llagostera made a few decent-looking signings in the summer, but they simply haven’t worked. They have lost

the surprise factor and, perhaps, the freedom of being seen as cannonfodder.

Their Brazilian striker Mosquito was comfortably swatted away by the Tenerife defence, who looked on their way back. And Dani was also much better in goal.

One win doesn’t make a season, but it’s a start.

Mirandes visit Santa Cruz this weekend and Tenerife should make it back-to-back wins.

Mirandes are a solid unit who don’t lose

many. They are unbeaten in three, but normally struggle on the road.

That said, they were good value for the win in Alaves a few weeks ago.

Ivory Coast striker Junior Lago has made a fine start to life at the higher level after a couple of solid seasons at Nastic. He will team up with Abdon Prats, who had a horror spell at Tenerife in the second half of last season.

Pedro Martin has the opposite scenario as he faces his former charg-

es, and the Tenerife striker will have mixed emotions “I like to play all the games, but this is my former team and this makes it a special pleasure,” he said.

“I have many friends there, the vast majority continue in the team.

I have so many fond memories and it was a good time for me.

“I will not celebrate a goal out of respect for Mirandes, but I hope to score. I want to help the team who I play for, and I always want to score.”

Shining Son is real Spur

ANOTHER interesting set of results and, with pace in their attack, go for an early goal. Results haven’t gone their way recently, but in the Premier League highlighted they will be pumped up for this game. just how tight things have become.

Prediction: Draw The mid-table teams are all taking points off each other, while the promoted teams are all picking up Last season: 0-1 points and, at times holding their own. And a quick glance at the bottom shows that reputation counts for nothing.

Tottenham v Man City

Spurs managed their second win of the season, against Palace, but it was hardly an inspiring performance. Harry Kane is looking more and more like a one-season wonder, but at least new signing Son Heung-min has stepped up to the plate and scored some important goals.

City will be licking their wounds after their home defeat by West Ham, but they shouldn’t have too many complaints as it was a very poor performance. They will have hated dropping points and will be looking to get straight back to winning ways.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-1 Leicester v Arsenal

The Foxes are starting to be the comeback kings, showing loads of character when they go behind. They showed a real battling quality to stay up last season and have continued in the same vein.

They are in fourth spot and are good value for that position. Arsenal come into this game after a loss against Chelsea, steeped in controversy.

After much pre-season hype they look much the same as they have for the last few seasons: frail in defence and still missing a consistent goal -corer.

Failure to add players in the summer looks like coming back to haunt them. Again!

Man Utd v Sunderland

Things seem to have clicked at Old Trafford, and against Southampton they always looked in control. Even going a goal down didn’t bother them.

Things got a little nervy at the end, but De Gea has come straight back in and continued where he left off last season. And what can you say about Martial? If he gets 20 goals this season, and he looks capable, the price tag won’t matter!

Sunderland have a real battle on their hands as they sit rock-bottom in the league. They need a win, but there is just no confidence within the squad and you can’t see it coming this week. There is a real danger of them becoming adrift, but will they panic and change manager again?

Stoke, it seems, are struggling to adapt to life as an attacking team with flair players and are still searching for their first win. On paper, this is a game they would be expected to win, but confidence is low, and the question is: how long will it take them to adapt to their new system? They are already losing ground.

Bournemouth come into this fixture on the back of a win, and they know the momentum is with them. Callum Wilson has found his feet as a Premier League goal-scorer, and he will cause the Stoke defence problems. If they can keep a clean sheet, they can grab the win.

Southampton v Swansea

Newcastle v Chelsea

Saints adjusted well last season, considering the players that went, but this season things haven’t fared as well. Just one win so far this season leaves them down towards the bottom of the table. Home form has always been their strength, so a win this weekend is essential to give the team a confidence boost.

Swansea would have been expecting more from their start to the season, but three draws have pegged them back. On the road they haven’t been great, and they know they will face a tough task here. Ayew and Gomis are key and, if they can link up well, they could earn another three points.

Liverpool v Aston Villa

West Ham v Norwich

Brendan again showed his ineptitude in terms of setting up his formation. Players were again used out of position, and they lacked any real attacking threat. He claims he is an attacking manager, but it seems to be a repeat of last season because this team look scared to go forward.

A change is needed. Villa seem to be a bit of a bogey team for Liverpool, beating them at Anfield last season. They will take heart from that

put them in mid-table. Given their squad, they are playing well. But they are conceding nearly two goals a game, so they need to tighten up their defence.

The Hammers must be be wishing they could play away from home every week after impressive wins against Arsenal, Liverpool and especially Man City, ending their unbeaten start. They are a well-drilled, compact side and defend well. Their quick counter-attacks are paying dividends and early goals are getting them points.

Norwich will be happy with their form so far on their return to the Premier League, which has

Palace should have had at least a point from the Spurs game, but many of their attacks came to nothing and they lacked a real cutting edge. Cabaye is pulling the strings for them, but they need a Plan B if he has a quiet game.

After a shaky start, West Brom have steadily improved, and they looked good with Berahino back on the scoresheet. They will be puffing their chests out after beating Villa last weekend, and Everton will hold no fear for them. They will start quickly and look to put their opponents under pressure from the first whistle.

Everton have found their stride and have moved nicely up the table. John Stones has been key with some great defensive displays. How happy are they that they managed to keep him? They know they can mix it up with any team and will fancy another three points from this clash.
