Crunch-time for Rajoy Continued from Front. On Monday, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the election for December 20th and dissolved Parliament. It was ratified by King Felipe, who officially signed the document which brought the current parliament to an end. In stating the date, Rajoy declared passionately that he was still the right man to lead Spain. The 60-year-old said in Madrid: “My government has turned the economy around, and we have honoured our pledge to bring down unemployment.” Rajoy and his Popular Party will run on a “better-the-devil-you-know” ticket. He will urge voters to plump for continuity and stability, and said his party, and its policies, was the only chance Spain had to safeguard the recovery and create more jobs. “If I didn’t think I was the best candidate, I wouldn’t be running,” he added. “Therefore, if my party does not win the most votes, I won’t try to be Prime Minister.” This early promise puts all his eggs in one basket. In the last election, in 2011, he secured 186 seats in the 350-seat lower house of parliament. This gave him a working majority - something he is unlikely to get for Christmas. That said, his party is still leading in the polls, and it would be a surprise if the PP didn’t win the most seats and get the most votes. As in the UK, the party with the most seats gets
first shot at forming a coalition, so Rajoy’s promise to stand down if this doesn’t happen is very much of getting his party onside. It’s safe to say that all is not sunshine and flowers in his party, but his handling of the economy is seen as his real ace in the hole. While many Spaniards remain unhappy with his economic action, there is little doubt that the country is going in the right direction. On Monday, Rajoy was asked about any potential coalitions and, while he kept his cards close to his chest. he did reveal that he would lead any coalition government. “My head is well-placed, and I’m not letting anyone change that,” he said, swotting away any talk of someone else leading his party if they fall short of an absolute majority. The Prime Minister’s party has been dogged by corruption allegations over the last four years, and the PP’s popularity of 47% in early 2012 has melted to below 30%. However, it still leads the way. The PP was battered in the May local elections, but not as badly as many predicted. And it’s the lack of any single, hard-hitting policy change, or an inspirational rival, which is keeping Rajoy ahead. Some of the PP’s traditional voters have defected to Ciudadan o s , which is polling around
16% - up from 4% a year ago. Led by 35-year-old former lawyer Albert Rivera, Ciudadanos is picking up at the right time but is unlikely to challenge for control. It remains to be seen if Rajoy would do a deal with those who have defected from his leadership and PP. The Socialist PSOE did okay in the local elections but, nationally, it has also suffered a hit in the polls. From a high of 30% in January 2012, the party has failed to make much headway. And in some polls, it has lost around 4%. In a tight
election, that would be crucial. Leader Pedro Sanchez has found it hard to reinvent the party after the demise of Jose Luis Zapatero in 2011. Many still blame the party for the economic crisis, which happened on its watch. While the PSOE enjoyed 25% of the vote in the local elections, there was a feeling that it didn’t make the progress it should have. Sanchez is yet to come up with an alternative economic policy, which pleases the business world. And, in fact, it can be argued that his ideas
pushes the party even more to the left. The previously-mentioned Ciudadanos may have its roots in Catalonia, but it is picking up support nationwide. The party has a pro-business agenda, which would see a top rate of tax capped at 40%, a lowering of corporation tax and the merging of smaller municipalities. It wants a smaller government and an opendoor immigration policy. Controversially, it wants to legalise prostitution, euthanasia and soft drugs such as marijuana. Because of its roots, Ciudadanos is walking a fine line when it comes to the hot potato subject of Catalonia. Leader Albert Rivera has this saying: “Catalonia is my homeland, Spain is my country, and the European Union is our future.” Then there is Pablo Iglesias’s Podemos party which, a year ago, seemed to be on a crest of a wave. Founded in Easter 2014, it started out as a leftwing, anti-corruption, protest party. Iglesias’s frustration with mainstream politics and its rulers struck a chord with the electorate. But like UKIP in the UK, it faltered at a crucial moment. It’s often hard to understand exactly what it would do differently and, obviously it lacks any experience. Podemos campaigns on an anti-austerity ticket at a time when the
economy is growing and unemployment is down. This has hit the party’s polling figures, and supporters have seen their popularity crash from 30% to nearly 10%. Wanting change is one thing; explaining and convincing people that you know how to do it is something else. A major opinion poll in Diario de Avisos this week showed how much work the smaller parties still need to do. This is shaping up to be one of the most closelyfought elections ever. There is a possibility that one of the big two parties will find the public mood. But the bookies and most experts feel there will be a hung result. In that eventuality, the smaller parties will have a role to play … and there would be considerable horse-trading with policies. The economy will be the major issue, while the handling of the Catalonia problem could be a deciding factor for voters. The fall-out from anticorruption investigation Operation Punica, which saw 51 arrests, including some high-profile figures from both the PP and PSOE, remains fresh in the memory. Throw in concerns over immigration, agriculture and manufacturing, and the long-standing abortion debate, and it’s easy to see that this election will have plenty of twists and turns.

Canarian chiefs investing more
THE Canary Islands Government will increase investment next year by 3%, but it’s not an acrossthe-board rise because some areas get more money than others.
Funds for health and education go up 1%, there is an extra 15% for employment, the social policies rise 11.2% and there’s 10.9% for housing. These are some of the figures from the draft budget law for 2016, advanced by Finance Minister Rosa Dávila, after being approved by the Governing Council, which, for next year, predicts 2.9% GDP Canarian growth, and a 28.5% unemployment rate. In the 2016 accounts, resources for productive sectors have also increased to 18.1%: thus, a 12.1% increase in the allocations for agriculture, livestock and fisheries; 14.5% support for the tourism sector, 37.9% for economic and promotion of trade, and 38.2% for Research and Development. The overall budget will increase 6% over the year, totalling 7.071bn euros, which is about 400m more than in the current year, with an actual spending of 6.180bn. And the public debt should be lowered by 39.7%. Recent fiscal developments include the previously-announced 99.9% bonus on inheritance and gift tax, and a 15% tax rise on tobacco. Expenditure on salaries for the Canarian Government and its advisers, already increased by around halfa-million euros, will remain unchanged.
Improving life’s quality
ADEJE Mayo José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga this week got together with Ricardo Redondas Marrero, Regional Director General of the public health service, to discuss the region’s co-ordinated prevention plans in health. Also present were Amada Trujillo Bencomo, Adeje Councillor for the promotion of better health, and Coun-
cil Health Department staff. The Mayor said: “We have established a good working relationship and opened up lines of communication between the different administrations in both established projects and new ones. “In particular, we are stressing the need for prevention programmes and health protection, developing programmes on matters such as child obesity, drug-addiction prevention, sexuallytransmitted diseases, etc. “Our objective is also to continue and strengthen existing pro-
grammes, as well as offering a range of new services, especially for the more vulnerable members of the population, like young people, children and senior citizens.” During his day working with the Adeje personnel and representatives, the Director General also visited the local health centre to see the situation for himself, and the changes needed. Ricardo Redondas said the meeting had been very positive, adding that Adeje was also to the forefront in prevention and health protection programmes.
“We have earmarked particular areas for cooperation to intensify a number of existing health programmes concerning prevention and, for instance, the promotion of healthy lifestyles.” During the meeting, the representatives also looked at the PIPO project, which has been developed in Adeje and targets obesity in young people. The programme began last year with a series of workshops and talks in the borough’s public schools to promote the importance of good eating habits and regular exercise.
There was also mention of the borough’s attention to drug-addiction prevention, sexual education projects and first-hand help for cancer sufferers. Councillor Trujillo Bencomo said: “All these programmes stem from local council initiatives over recent years. And the new challenge in this phase is to give them fresh impetus, in partnership with the regional government. “This synergy between the two administrations will be highly beneficial for the citizens of Adeje, which is our main objective.”

Record tourist numbers again NO wonder tourism chiefs in the Canaries and the mainland are beaming! Spain has broken yet another record after welcoming a best-ever 54.4 million international visitors this year, up to the end of September.
And the Canaries received 8.4 million international tourists in the same period, which was 1.2% up on the corresponding time last year. Only Cataluña and the Balearic Islands posted better figures. Spain’s bumper tally was revealed in a new survey - as was those of the islands - released by the country’s Industry, Energy and Tourism Ministry. It was 3.8% higher
than calculations taken at the end of September 2014 for the same ninemonth period. Spain broke its all-time record for the number of foreign tourist arrivals, up to and including August, when it registered 47.2m visits, which topped the first eight months of 2014 by 4.1%. Madrid showed the biggest improvement with an 11% increase. Latest figures from Frontur, the Ministry’s Tourism Border Movements Survey, show that again, most visitors came from Britain, Germany and France which, combined, make up more than half of all tourists entering the country. In all, Spain received two million more tourists than in 2014 over the same nine-month period. And the Madrid region showed the biggest improvement in the survey, with an 11% increase.
But Catalonia remains the preferred destination of most foreign tourists, with almost 14 million arrivals - 3.2% more than last year. The Balearics ranked second with more than 10 million foreigners landing on the islands, which was a 2.5% improvement from 2014. While the latter is a prime destination for Britons, Catalonia has experienced a particular increase in the number of French visitors, with 5.2% more than last year coming over. The region’s proximity to France, and the number of good holiday deals, were the key factors, said Frontur. There were also increases in tourists numbers from Asia (33.4%), the US (23.1%), Switzerland (8.6%) and other European nations (8.7%). But while Germany ranked second in the survey, its tourist numbers declined by 3.4%, against the same period last year. Russian visitors are still falling - 36% compared with the JanuarySeptember 2014 period. That was down to the global fall in oil and gas prices, upon which a large part of the country’s economy depends. Portugal’s visitors also dropped, but by 2% only compared with last year. Curiously. the number of international motor-
ists arriving in Spain rose by 4.3% - representing 10 million arrivals. But air travel was the most commonlyused form of transport to Spain, eight out of 10 people flying in to the
country, says Frontur. As for accommodation, six out of 10 international tourists stayed in hotels, though an increased number opted for other types of places to spend their holidays,
especially rental properties. The majority of visitors to Spain, 71%, again preferred to organise their trips online themselves rather than via package deals.

King’s praise for big two at Asturias Awards gala AMERICAN filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and Cuban writer Eduardo Padura featured largely during the Princess of Asturias Awards gala.
Spain’s King Felipe VI presided over the ceremony at Oviedo’s Teatro Campoamor, accompanied on stage for the award presentation by Queen Letizia, while his mother, Queen Sofia, looked on from the royal box. The 1,500 invited guests responded with particular warmth to Coppola, winner of the Arts Award, who delivered one of the keynote speeches. “This is the real thrill of the human species, that each generation, children can run faster, leap higher, play musical instruments with uncanny, technical excellence and dream bigger, newer, cinematic expressions than we can’t even guess at,” he said. The King hailed Coppola for his “unmistakable talent” and his ability “to reinterpret and renew the gamut of human passions, ever more wisely and effectively”. And from “the prodigious and magnificent list of Coppola films”, Felipe cited The Godfather and Apocalypse Now as emblematic. Padura, the Asturias Literature laureate who wore a Cuban shirt known as the “guayabera”, spoke lovingly of Cuba, the Spanish language and work. He recalled his origins in the Havana suburb of Mantilla, where he continues to live in the house in which he was born. King Felipe, paying tribute, said: “Padura is one of the leading writers of his generation. He is the creator of a body of work which evocatively embraces Havana, its neighbourhoods, its people and its history.” The monarch added: “All his works enable him to speak of disappointment, failure, disil-
lusionment, corruption and, at the same time, the beauty and serenity of happy days, awash with joy and enthusiasm.” French economist Esther Duflo, recipient of the Social Sciences Award, invoked the plight of refugees and said that society “cannot allow itself the luxury” of turning its back on them. The King stressed that Duflo had spent years “engaged in the noble task of finding effective ways to combat extreme poverty, and explaining why many of the initiatives taken in this area fail.” Online encyclopedia Wikipedia, honoured with the 2015 Award for International Co-operation, “seeks to place culture within the reach of the largest number of people possible, with a clear desire to expand knowledge, to generalise and make knowledge accessible,” said Felipe. Spanish philosopher Emilio Lledo, the Communication and Humanities, expressed concern about humanity’s inability to rise above ignorance, violence and cruelty.
The King presented Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna, who shared the Award for Technical and Scientific Research, as “two scientists renowned worldwide for having developed a revolutionary technology that enables the modification of genes with great precision”. The Award for Concord, granted to the Hospitallers of St John of God, was accepted by Jesus Etoyo, head of the order. The only people honoured who weren’t present in Oviedo were basketball-star brothers Pau and Marc Gasol, joint recipients of the Sports Award.
They could not make the trip from the States because of professional commitments with their respective NBA teams. But Felipe said of the
talented Gasol brothers: “The memories and emotions of the recent European gold medal won by our national team, to whom we reiterate our congratulations from here, are still very much alive in our thoughts.” The King, alluding to the independence movement in Spain’s north-western region of Catalonia, said: “May no one build walls with feelings. Divisions will never make a people great ... they only impoverish and isolate.” He added: “In any democratic society like ours, the defence of the law, and constitutional
principles, is the guarantee of the rights and freedoms of all citizens. We Spaniards must, therefore, preserve the co-existence that fortifies and enriches our collective life.” This year marks the first time the prize, which bears the name of the heir to the throne, has been called the Princess of Asturias Award. It was changed from Prince when Princess Leonor’s father ascended the throne last year as King Felipe VI. Each winner receives 50,000 euros and a replica statuette, designed by Joan Miró, the late Spanish artist.
Major test for HIV cure THE world’s first clinical trial to cure five HIV patients within three years - soon to take place in Spain will use transplants of blood from umbilical cords. Until now, just one person, known as the “Berlin patient”, has been completely cured of HIV. He was diagnosed with both HIV and leukaemia, and needed treatment for
cancer. Doctors used a bone-marrow of a donor who had a certain cellular mutation, which resisted HIV. After the transplant, the patient’s HIV levels decreased and he is now cancerfree, with only traces of virus found. To see if this can work, the National Organisation of Transplants (ONT) has selected 157 donors with a genetic muta-
tion which allows them to resist HIV, and will treat HIV patients suffering from leukaemia and lymphoma. Doctors will transplant umbilical cord blood into the patients and the treatment will begin in December in Madrid. The announcement came last week at the haematology conference by Spain’s National Organisation of Transplants (ONT).

Arona is planning first theme hotel in Tenerife
The editor says...
Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Not good enough THE first autumn rains, a week or so ago, saw some nasty storms in the archipelago and not all of them were of a meteorological nature. Last Friday was one of the sunniest, warmest days of the month. Well, it was on the east, south and west coasts of Tenerife. Fuerteventura was experiencing a real humdinger of a storm, which tailed into Gran Canaria, where Telde got the worst of it. But here? Nothing but sun! It was like a late summer’s day. But for the ankle-biters, it was Snow Day since all the schools were closed. Why? I still cannot get a proper answer for that. The Canary Islands Government made the decision late on the Thursday night. The local town halls don’t have the power to over-rule such acts, I was told by one municipality. I understand that halfa-dozen Tenerife schools needed repair work done, so I have no problem with them being closed. But the rest? We would all have accepted the schools being closed the previous day, In fact, there is a separate argument about why the schools were open when the storm was at its strongest. Someone suggested the schools were closed because teachers from the north couldn’t travel south. Well, the TF-1 was open and the buses were running just fine. If the Government didn’t want people to travel, simply close the
roads. And why is it always the schools that close? If there is such concern for mass gatherings of people when it rains, close the commercial centres. Shut all businesses in Las Chafiras (THAT would solve a lot of road problems) or, say, Siam Mall. I notice Alcampo, and all the Government buildings in the north where the rain was at its heaviest, were open. The whole things smacks of Little Island syndrome. Yet we claim to be a developing region which can attract big business. Not on last week’s showing. At times, we lack common sense. I have all the sympathy in the world for those parents who had to take a day off work, losing money, because of a drop of rain. I wonder if someone in the Government has got the calculator, out to try to work out how much money our economy lost as a result of the schools being closed. In the UK, parents are getting fined £60 a day, per kid, for not taking them to school. So maybe parents should bill the schools, or the Government, when they cannot send them to classes? Fair’s fair, and I bet it would stop in a heartbeat all the soft school closures. Of course, safety comes first. But closing schools for no real reason hardly sends out the best life lesson to children.

IT is set to be one of the best hotels on the Island, and the entire, ambitious project has already created a buzz.

LAST week’s heavy rainfall caused problems throughout the Canaries, with severe damage in many municipalities.
Gran Canaria’s Telde was the worst hit and the national Minister Jose Manuel Soria, who is from the region, said: “Exceptional measures will be taken to alleviate the effects of the catastrophe.” During a visit to the coast of Telde to see the damaging effects, Soria said Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had instructed the Interior, Development and En-
capacity. Arona municipality has backed the new project, which is on a 45,700sq/m plot, purchased 15 years ago by Santiago Puig, next to Las Americas golf course and opposite the National Police headquarters. The site is within easy reach of the Magma Arts and Congress centre, and is practically adjacent to the highway. True, the area has an ugly look now, and is often avoided at night because of constant problems with street prostitution. But that reputa-
tion should be shredded over the next few years. According to a press release, the plot’s total area, plus the building - an average height of eight floors and 39 accommodation units on each floor - will occupy 20,280sq/m. The remainder will house a large natural park, inspired by the Riviera Maya resorts - quality hotels with natural attractions featuring water circuits, caves, waterfalls and lush vegetation. All the facilities, especially aquariums,
water parks, zoos and amusement parks, are said to be extremely profitable. If all goes as expected, the first earthworks will begin in early 2017 and the hotel will be completed in early 2019. The construction will lead to the creation of 500 jobs and, long-term, the hotel will employ up to 400 permanent staff. Spanish company Aspro Parks, which manages 62 parks in 11 European countries and receives 14 million visitor annually, is behind the project.
Storms leave a trail of damage costing millions vironment and Agriculture Ministers to “make a valuation on the cost as quickly as possible”. He added that Rajoy had been following the effects of the archipelago storms in detail. In an initial assessment, the City of Telde estimated damages to be in the region of eight million euros. “This is a partial estimate,
because it remains to be known the exact damage that has been caused in a large part of the public roads and municipal infrastructure,” said Soria. The Mayor, Carmen Hernandez, has asked the central and regional executives to deal with the exceptional aid as quickly as possible. But Antonio Morales,
Gran Canaria Cabildo President, predicts that the cost of the damage on the island will be “many more millions of euros”. Tenerife was also affected badly, but not in the same way as Telde. Repairs will cost a few million euros, which will be found from the national emergency relief fund.

‘We will ban schools religious instruction’ PEDRO Sánchez, head of Spain’s socialist party, says that if he’s elected, his government will do away with religion courses in public and private schools.
Sánchez leads the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), the nation’s largest opposition party, into the 20th December general election for all the seats in the lower general house of Spain’s parliament, and more than 75% of the upper-house seats. The proposal to remove religion courses from all schools in Spain is part of the first draft of the PSOE’s platform, which was reviewed last
week by the Standing Executive Committee. The party’s platform states that the Spanish Government must promote “necessary reforms in the current legal framework, as well as international agreements,” in order to “promote a secular public school where religious instruction is not included, either in the curriculum or the school schedule”. Not even private schools, run independently of the government, could offer religion courses for students to take during school hours under the proposal. They could do so only as an extracurricular activity. Father José María Gil Tamayo, spokesman of the Spanish Conference of Catholic Bish-
ops, told Spain’s largest radio network (COPE) that no student was obliged to take religious instruction classes, but it was obligatory for schools to offer the course. Fr. Gil Tamayo also emphasised that this course formed part of “a curriculum on a par with the rest of the subjects”. He added: “This is a matter of parents exercising their right within the educational system, laid down in the constitution, for their children to be educated in accordance with their religious and moral convictions.” According to the PSOE platform, the religion course could no longer be used in calculating the average grade used to obtain a schol-
arship, or be admitted to a university. But Father Gil Tamayo pointed out that the PSOE, perhaps looking for a few votes, was simply “stirring up a problem (for itself)”. He also stressed that the party “needs to keep in mind that the moderate people of this country, the voters of the PSOE, proportionate to the major religious denomination in Spain, are Catholics.” The PSOE is one of six parties involved in Spain’s general election. The current rulers, the People’s Party, is conservative and Christian democratic. The social-democratic PSOE last led the Spanish Government from 2004-2011, under Prime Minister José Rodríguez Zapatero.
Norwegian cuts cost to mainland, via Tenerife
NORWEGIAN Airlines this week started a plethora of new routes between Tenerife and the peninsula - Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga - during the winter season.
The budget airline will operate daily routes between Los Rodeos in the north and Madrid, four times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) and also to Barcelona, and two (Monday and Friday) between Tenerife South and Malaga airport.
SPAIN’S Civil Guard is investigating dozens of complaints filed across the country since the summer by members of the Ashley Madison website, which encourages extra-marital affairs.
Complainants say they are being blackmailed by online ex-
Alfons Claver, Norwegian’s Director of Institutional Relations, told the media, after hosting the first national flight, that since the collapse of Spanair, availability of flights between the Island and the mainland had been deci-
mated. “Norwegian, thereby, seeks to help turn around this situation - and with an offer of very low rates, generous legroom, new aircraft and the option of using free wifi aboard,” he said. “Today, a Canary resi-
dent can find a ticket for 25 euros with Norwegian without difficulty.” Claver also said the occupancy of the flight, and the time of purchase, are factors that influence flight prices. Apart from again acknowledging the company’s determination to continue to grow in Tenerife, we are being used as a hub by the airline. There are plans for flights to America, and Claver is convinced that Norwegian is “an airline with competitiveness. He added: “Our prices are much lower than they were about three months ago.”
Spain could be the leading pig suppliers SPAIN’S pig producers have been spreading their wings, in a manner of speaking, and the country could become a bigger sector in that market than Germany in the EU if its growth rate continues.
Karsten Flemin, Danish Agriculture and Food Council’s senior analyst, said during its recent Pig Conference in Herning, central Jutland, that there had been a lot of investment in Spain, and the country’s production increase had found outlets on the Asian market. “This year has seen a big increase, particularly when you see the May and June figures,” he said. Those figures show a 6.2% rise in the Spanish pig herd - 26.983 million specimens - compared

tortionists, who want money in return for notspilling the beans to their spouses, relatives, friends and work colleagues about their romantic exploits, reports news agency Europa Press. Ashley Madison - slogan “Life is short, have an affair” - is a is based in Canada, with a presence in 26 countries, including Spain.
But the Civil Guard’s computer crime experts say the messages are coming from outside Spain. Although confidentiality is a key element of the site’s success, a group of hackers calling themselves The Impact Team stole personal and financial information in July about its 37 million-plus clients.
The group left it in the hard-to-access “Dark Web,” part of the so-called “Deep Web,” which cannot be reached via search engines. The disclosure has led to extortion and blackmail threats, and the Canadian police said in August that it was investigating two suicides, apparently linked to the scandal.

In recent weeks, dozens of Spaniards have been receiving email reminders of their affairs, and seeking sums ranging from between 500-2,000 euros to keep quiet. And to prove they have genuine information about their targets, the blackmailers show financial transactions made by the victims as clients of Ashley
with Germany’s standstill numbers of just over 28 million. At the same time, though, Germany’s sow-herd numbers fell by 2.7%, while Spain’s rose 2.3%. Mr Flemin said that in the EU, only Spain and the UK were able to retain high prices because the products were going to a high-priced domestic market. The Dutch pig herd is showing a slight rise of 2.8%, with a small rise in the sow herd, but the French pig herd, rising by 2.3%, is also experiencing a drop in sowherd numbers. Denmark is witnessing a 1.4% increase in pig production and a 0.5% rise in its sow herd. But in the short term, at least, the price forecast for the Danish pig producers continues to be poor. with farmers hoping to break even at best. Yet the EU’s pigmeat production is expected to remain stable through 2016. Madison that required a membership fee. The extortionists hack into their victims’ social media accounts before making their threats - to find out who their friends and acquaintances are. The Civil Guard’s computer crime experts, having determined that the messages are coming from outside Spain, are working with police in various countries to try to put an end to the practice.

Transgender fails to claim Spain’s world beauty title ANGELA Ponce, a transgender woman, failed to make history by becoming Miss World Spain on Sunday. But she still feels like a winner, despite being favourite to win the international event.

the Costa del Sol. But she failed to make the final 10, Mireia Lalaguna (Miss Barcelona) went on to claim the title, and a disappointed Angela said: “In my eyes, I’m still a winner. I have the regional crown on my head and I’m fighting to make us seen, to make us heard and to demonstrate that I am already a queen.” The 23-year-old, the first transsexual woman to compete for Miss Spain, says knew she was “different” as a youngster, recalling:
“When my parents asked me what toy I wanted, I went straight for the Barbies.” The model, who still works at her parents’ restaurant, told 20minutos.es: “The bottom line is that my family supported me when I was little”, and she added that her father sat with her as she played with her dolls. She began to investigate and discover transsexuality when she was 11, and said she can now begin to fight for be-

Making a prime mark TYPICALLY, new Primark storeopenings attract crowds. Madrid is no different and among them, as ever, is George Weston, Chief Executive of Associated British Foods.
He enjoys oversees the low-cost fashion chain, along with a number of food brands, which include Ovaltine and Twinings Tea. True, a peculiar combination, but Weston defends the varying businesses which comprise ABF. “Hodgepodge is not fair,” he says. “We are a differentiated food company with Primark attached.” It’s just a fancy way of saying that the group has a number of unrelated grocery brands, from sugar to bread and cereals, as well as a fashion chain. But Primark is the profit leader for his family-controlled conglomerate. Weston draws a comparison with consumergoods giant Unilever, which also owns a raft of seemingly-unconnected brands, adding: “Primark has thrived over the past 40 years.” This Madrid store is a new landmark for Primark because it’s the first which is not situated in a mall, although the company already has 40 shops in Spain. The Gran Via shop is in the heart of Madrid’s shopping district, which, believes Weston, will bring in younger shoppers. Primark’s new site, once a department store, spans five floors and is the company’s second-largest shop, after Manchester. And, as Spanish fashionistas have come to appreciate, it is nothing short of a phenomenon. Primark was started in 1969 by Weston’s grandfather, Garfield, who
opened the first shop in Ireland. Nowadays, it contributes £662 million of the group’s £1.1bn operating profit last year, which is a huge chunk. Here in Tenerife, we have our own Primark store in Santa Cruz, which was an instant hit with Brits as well as the Spanish when it opened a few years ago. Brits from the South made pilgrimages by coach to get their hands on the inexpensive, value-formoney clothes for men, women and children. Weston reveals the secret to Primark’s success: “Modesty,” he says proudly. “It is no accident that some of the greatest retailers come from small countries. With its Irish roots, Primark has humility. Who are we to tell you what to buy? We listen to what shoppers want and we adapt to them.” He adds: “We are traders, the cheapest on the High Street. It is all about the clothes we sell, the culture around our stores, and the speed with which managers respond by finding a solution if something doesn’t work out.” He outlines that some international retailers have adopted a onesize-fits-all approach: “They say, ‘this is what we do in America, so this is what you should do, too.’ “The Irish influence on the business should not be underestimated. There is a sense of determination that comes from Primark’s Irish heritage. Also, a lot of the managers have the same background and went to school together.” He points out that there aren’t a lot of “silos” in Primark - management-speak for an open atmosphere. Far from working in isolation, managers chat with each other, discussing what’s selling and what’s not. Weston claims Primark can offer low prices as well as great style,
and that it has stores in prime locations and offers good service. These elements, he insists, are all essentials and not “either-or” qualities. Earlier on opening day, Weston took a starring role at the new store’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. He was joined by Primark’s retail royalty - a host of top bosses usually tucked away behind the scenes. Among them was Primark Chief Executive Paul Marchant. And his predecessor, Arthur Ryan, widely seen as the architect of the chain’s success and now an 85-year-old retail guru, was also among the guests. Weston is still not shy to shop while at work and an hour later, in the fifth-floor meeting room, he appears clutching a store bag, because he saw a pair of black Primark trainers he just had to have. “They were only 15 euros (£11) and on launch day you get a free cloth bag,” says the tycoon, who last year took home a bulging pay package of £7.1m. Primark made its first overseas foray with a Spanish store in 2006, and Weston is keen to expand further in Eu-
rope. “We think we are immature outside the UK,” he admits. “We have no High Street stores in France or Germany, but next year, we will open in Milan.” So is that a suggestion that Primark, with 186 stores in the UK, has reached saturation? “Maturing is the word to use,” he says. “That doesn’t mean we don’t have more to do.” Some people believe Primark would be more valuable if it were spun off from ABF and that it would grow faster as a stand-alone company. But Weston says money - or being part of a wider group - has not barred them from opening new stores. “The biggest constraint is finding the right sites,” he admits. “It took five years to get this Spanish one together. Weston, who read PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) at Oxford University, is an heir to the dynasty behind some of the world’s most prestigious brands. The Weston clan controls upmarket department stores Fortnum & Mason and Selfridges, as well as furniture store Heals. He worked as a man-
agement consultant for two years after graduation, then cut his teeth in the family business working at a food factory in Sydney. He says the pressure of living up to his highachieving family tree is not unbearable. “I’ve been Chief Executive for 10 years, and the company has done well,” he says modestly. “When I was growing up working at the pie factory in Australia, all that weighed on me, but I hope I have gone beyond that stage.” The family control Primark, which is listed on the London market. In 1950, Garfield Weston placed 80% of his wealth
in a charitable trust which owns 44% of the business, while the family directly own 16%. The trust depends on the success of ABF to make donations to good causes, and it exceeded £58m last year. Weston says: “Ownership by the Foundation gives us stability. Shareholders in family companies really matter because family-run firms are able to create value in the long term. “There is no point being a hero over six months and bust in three years.” He says the business probably takes less financial risk than rivals and this means it has lower levels of debt. But when it came to taking a punt on Primark breaking into America, Weston didn’t hesitate, despite the US being a graveyard for many UK retailers. And last month, the company opened its first shop, in a converted department store, in Boston. Food retailers have found it difficult, but firms such as H&M and Zara owner Inditex have done well,” he recalls. “You have to think of Primark as being European - it’s Irish. A lot of UK firms haven’t succeeded in Europe, but we have.” And this is far from the end of the astonishing Primark story. No wonder it’s nicknamed Primarni by so many!

BARCELONA will soon be featuring Europe’s tallest building in the form of the city’s most famous tourist attraction the revamped La Sagrada Familia Basilica in all its wondrous beauty!
Work on the Basilica is now entering its final phase, with its six towers set to be raised, and chief architect Jordi Fauli is absolutely sure the central “Tower of Jesus Christ,” the tallest of the six, will ensure an architectural marvel, drawing millions of visitors each year when it is finished in a little over a decade. The “Tower of Jesus Christ” rising 175m above the ground level, will be crowned by a cross and tightly surrounded by five other towers, one dedicated to Mary and four slightly shorter ones for the four evangelists. Fauli unveiled the next phase of the construction in a newly-finished chamber that formed a small amphitheatre, perched 60m (196ft) above the floor of the church, from where hundreds of visitors gaze

at the church’s stained glass windows and arching ceilings. The Tower will rise directly above the chamber, which is designed to support the weight of the towers and channel sunlight into the building. “La Sagrada Familia” Foundation announced on 21st October t h a t t h e temple had entered final construction phase The first stone was laid on 19th March, 1882, following the Neogothic design drawn up by ar-
chitect
Francisco
de
Paula del Villar y Lozano. Visionary architect Antoni Gaudi took over the design of the Sagrada Familia in 1883 until his death on 10th June, 1926, when he was run over by a street trolley. Chief Architect Fauli said: “The central tower of 172.5m (566ft) will make it the tallest cathedral in Europe, because t h e tall-
est tower in Europe is Germany’s Ulm, at 162m (531.5ft).” But St Peter’s Basilica, in Rome, will still have the tallest interior. According to “La Sagrada Familia” Foundation, the temple could be finished in the first third of the 21st century, and that will delight the three million-plus people who visit the temple each year. Fauli said the plan to have the towers and most of the church’s structure completed in 2026 for the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death was still on schedule. But he admitted there would still be some elements left to finish, such as decorations. “It’s difficult to predict,” he said. “But we can say that it will be completed by 2030-2032.” The main projects being undertaken over the coming years are the construction of the west sacristy, the central towers and the Tower of Jesus. A mere 15 years ago,
there was no roof on the inner part of the church as it stood between the two beautiful facades, with eight bell towers that leave spectators overcome with awe - one side looking like a sand castle and the other a work of art inspired by cubist painting. Gaudi, a fervent Catholic, won the patronage of some of Barcelona’s wealthiest industrialist and upper-crust families, who commissioned him to build gorgeous homes and other daring buildings and parks that have helped make Barcelona a leading tourist destination. He never expected the cathedral to be completed in his lifetime, and just one facade was finished when he died. The monument received more than 3.2 million visits in 2014, making it one of the biggest tourist sites in Spain. And the entrance fees of 15-20 euros finance the construction budget of 25m euros a year.

Disabled forced to wait a year for their benefits WHAT should take a maximum of three months can take more than a year. That is the depressing reality for those waiting to be declared disabled officially, so they can collect their benefits.
A 2014 decree for the disabled, established by the Canary Islands Government, says the
waiting period should be 90 days. But nearly 17,000 people in the Islands have been waiting at least a year for their benefits. The figure, pointed out this week by Popular Party Deputy Leader Josefa Luzardo, coincides with reports from bodies such as Disability and CERMI Tenerife Canary platform. And it is very similar to that offered in July 2014 by Paulino Rivero, the
then Executive President. Inés Roja, Social Policy Minister of the regional executive, admitted in Parliament that there were 16,631 people unable to enjoy their rights because of “an administrative collapse,” adding: “About 11,000 are still awaiting assessment.” Far from improving, the situation has worsened in the last year, and Patricia Hernandez, the Ministry of Social
Policy’s Vice-President, said: “We must sort out the allowance of public benefits and services as quickly as possible.” To achieve this, she said that management would be reorganised, with administrative support, criteria and “clear and common protocols for the seven islands”. She added: “We must also launch a new software tool that will allow a more agile and efficient management of
records within the database centres and information services. “We will provide more staff to create new assessment teams, con-
sisting of doctors, psychologists and social workers, who will also have administrative support for managing records.”
TB rife in London ONE-THIRD of London’s boroughs suffer from high rates of tuberculosis, with more than 40 incidents reported per 100,000 people. That’s the shocking news contained in a report by the London Assembly, which points out that some areas have higher rates of than Rwanda or Iraq. The report records that some wards in Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hounslow and Newham have rates of more than 150 per 100,000. It also says prisoners, homeless people, people with substance abuse issues, refugees and migrants are particularly at risk. Although the BCG vac-
cination against TB is recommended for all London’s new-born babies, it is not on offer in eight of the 24 boroughs. The rate of infection among UK-born Londoners has risen, yet it has fallen throughout those who weren’t born in Britain. But the report said it would be wrong to assume TB was a disease of migrants. Newham borough has the highest rate per 100,000 people, with 107 cases while, against that, 2013 figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO) showed that in Rwanda, the figure was 69, and 45 in Iraq. Algeria and Guatemala also had a lower incidence than the capital, and the average rate per 100,000 in the UK as a whole was 13.
Controversial bear hunt
AN organised bear hunt throughout Florida ended after just two days when a higherthan-expected number were killed.
Officials had sold more than 3,200 hunting permits for the controversial, week-long hunt in the state - the first for 21 years. Supporters claimed the intention was to cut down on the surging population of black bears, whose numbers have increased from 300 in the Seventies to more than 3,000 today. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) released a statement reporting that 295 bears had been killed in two days of hunting, adding: “The 2015 bear hunt is officially over.” Authorities were not
concerned by the numbers, saying it was a sign that the bear population was higher than initially thought. Pro-hunting campaigners believe there have been hundreds of bear incidents in neighbourhoods over the last few years, including four where people have been injured - mostly north of Orlando. Bears have also been blamed for a number of pet deaths - mostly dogs - which get caught up with the large animals as they rummage through waste bins. Hunting licences cost 100 dollars for Florida residents, and 300 for non-residents. Restrictions on them required the bears to weigh at least 100lbs. There was a limit of one bear per hunter, and they were not allowed to be killed if they were with any cubs.

Toyota inches ahead of scandal-hit rivals
TOYOTA is back on top of global vehicle sales after releasing figures for the first nine months of the year. The Japanese car-maker sold 7.5 million in the first three quarters of 2015, beating Volkswagen’s 7.43 million and General Motors’ 7.2 million. After six months of the year, VW was ahead of Toyota, in pole position for the first time. But Volkswagen’s emissions’ scandal emerged towards the end of September. The discovery of software, able to mislead emissions tests on diesel cars, could well have
more effect on VW’s sales in the remainder of the year. Toyota’s sales for the first nine months were 1.5% below the level at the same stage last year. The company initially overtook GM to take the top slot in 2008 and has kept it every year since, except 2011, when GM was the top seller after the fatal tsunami in north-eastern Japan disrupted Toyota’s production. But there was genuine relief at General Motors on Sunday when it reached an agreement with the United Auto Workers union, avert-
ing a threatened strike. Details of the four-year labour deal were not released. It will now go to a vote of UAW leaders, and then the union’s 52,700 workers at GM. “We believe that this agreement will present stable, long-term, significant wage-gains and job security commitments to UAW members, now and in the future,” said union President Dennis Williams. The union had threatened to terminate its existing contract at midnight Eastern time on Sunday, meaning there could have been a strike.
Judge charges ETA suspects FIVE suspected former leaders of ETA, the armed Basque Separatist Movement, have been charged by a Spanish judge with committing crimes against humanity.
He was referring to attacks carried out by the group after 2004, which killed 12 people. Judge Juan Pablo Gonzalez, of the National Audience, which handles terrorism cases, laid the charges on Tuesday as part of a probe into crimes against humanity. He began the investigation in July in response to a complaint filed by several victims’ associations. It centres on cases of murder or kidnapping, carried out by the group since 1st October 2004, when Spain’s criminal code was amended to include
a chapter on crimes against humanity. They include the bombing of a car park at Madrid airport by ETA militants on 30th December 2006, in which two Ecuadorian men died. The judge said the investigation has focused on the suspected leaders of ETA during this period, since they “had knowledge of the plan of the crimes that were carried out” and had issued instructions. Among those charged were the suspected former military heads of ETA, Garikoitz Aspiazu Rubina, alias “Txeroki”, and Angel Iriondo Yarza, both arrested in 2008; Aitor Elizaran Aguilar, suspected head of ETA’s political apparatus who was detained in 2009, and Mikel Carrera Sarobe, arrested in 2010. The four are being held in jails in France, where they were all arrested. The judge also charged Jose Anto-
nio Urrutikoetxea, also known as “Josu Ternera”, a veteran leader of ETA between 1977 and 1992, who has been on the run since escaping arrest in France in 2013. ETA is accused of killing 829 people in a four-decade campaign for the independence of the Basque region, which straddles the French and Spanish border. The group announced the end of its armed campaign in October 2011, but has refused to hand over its weapon, or dissolve the organisation, as demanded by governments in both countries. ETA began a unilateral disarmament programme in early 2014, in co-operation with the International Verification Commission an independent group of experts from various countries, not recognised officially by the Spanish Government. ETA is considered to be a terrorist organisation by the EU.

30th October - 5th November 2015 TONY Blair has apologised for “mistakes” in the planning of the Iraq war - after 12 years of outright denial - saying “the intelligence we received” was wrong. The former Labour Prime Minister also admitted there were “elements of truth” in the feeling that the 2003 invasion was the “principal cause” of Islamic State’s rise. Blair spoke about the war during an interview on US TV, in which he expressed regret over some aspects of the conflict. “I apologise for the fact that the intelligence we received was wrong,” he told CNN in an interview. “I also apologise for some of the mistakes in planning and, certainly, our mistake in our understanding of what would happen once you removed the regime.” But Blair was adamant he did not regret ousting Saddam Hussein. “I find it hard to apologise for removing Saddam,” he said. “I think, even from today in 2015, it is better that he’s not there than that he is there.” Asked if the Iraq War

was “the principal cause” of the rise of Islamic State, the former Labour leader said: “I think there are elements of truth in that.” He added: “Of course, you can’t say those of us who removed Saddam in 2003 bear no responsibility for the situation in 2015. “But it’s important, also, to realise that one, the Arab Spring, which began in 2011, would also have had its impact on Iraq today. And two, ISIS actually came to prominence from a base in Syria and not in Iraq.” Blair’s “apology” was issued amid claims that he was attempting to “spin” the response to the longdelayed Chilcot Inquiry. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was quick to strike, saying: “The Blair spin operation
Lotto winners take an IOU ORGANISERS of a lottery run by America’s Illinois state say budget problems mean they can offer only IOUs to those who win more than a few hundred dollars.
Since July, the lottery organisers have been withholding payments to players who win 25,000 dollars (£16,000) or more. And now, they have now lowered that threshold to $600. The delay, they say, is because of a budget stalemate between Republican Governor Bruce Rauner and the Democrats, who control the Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Lottery chiefs said in a statement that it could not issue the cheques legally. “Please note that the funding to pay winners exists, but the legal authority to issue checks does not,” they added. Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger said a $560m payment to the state pension system

was also on hold because of the budget row. Needless to say, the IOUs sparked a classaction lawsuit last month in federal court. The case was filed by two people who won $50,000 and $250,000 respectively in July, but have yet to be paid. The lawsuit says the Illinois Lottery has withheld more than $288m in prizes since the state budget expired in June. “How the heck can they do this, and they’re still selling tickets?” demanded one of the lead plaintiffs, 48-year-old Rhonda Rasche, reports the Chicago Tribune. “If I were the one selling raffle tickets and I didn’t pay, I would be sued or in jail - or both!”
begins ... but the country still awaits the truth. The delay to the Chilcot report is a scandal.” No date has yet been given for the release of the Chilcot Inquiry’s final conclusions. The inquiry was established more than six years ago by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who succeeded
Blair. He said it would take a year to complete. A Blair spokeswoman said: “Tony Blair has always apologised for the intelligence being wrong and for mistakes in planning. “He has always also said, and says again here, that he does not, however, think it was wrong to remove Saddam.
“He did not say the decision to remove Saddam in 2003 ‘caused ISIS’ and pointed out that ISIS was barely heard of at the end of 2008, when al Qaeda was basically beaten.” She added: “He went on to say that in 2009, Iraq was relatively more stable. What then happened was a combina-
tion of two things - there was a sectarian policy pursued by the government of Iraq, which were mistaken policies. “But also, when the Arab Spring began, ISIS moved from Iraq into Syria, built themselves from Syria and then came back into Iraq. All of this he has said before.”

FROM the start of the new year, the Spanish legal system will be a speeded up. A little! A revised law will bring Spain into line with a number of other European countries.
It means that some court matters can now be resolved without your attendance. And there is an extra system in place to alert you of court action. The Civil Proceedings Law Reform came into force on 7th October, and the main changes, which relate to information and communications, via technology
30th October - 5th November 2015
Law amended for Civil Proceedings
and communications with the Administration of Justice, can now be conducted electronically. From 1st January 2016, all legal practitioners and judicial officers must use telematics systems for submitting all written acts, and acts of communication. Among other issues, emails and telephone numbers may be used to locate the defendant, even by SMS or text. This means that legal requirements, such as decisions and summons, can be send via modern technology, such as a text to a mobile device or an email to a mailbox. Legal certifications and the ability to perform acts of commu-
nication this way, now mean that Court officials can register notifications without the need of witness assistance. Also, from the start of 2016, a Verbal Proceeding is now allowed. This is the acceptance of a written plea (until now the defendant had to plea in court) and means the claimant will know the defendant’s answer before the hearing. This will help to speed up the legal process, especially with smaller cases. It will be possible for parties to request that the lawsuit is resolved without the need of a hearing. However, the processes pending at the time will continue, according to the previ-
ous legislation. So this will affect cases which are submitted only after 1st January 2016, or crimes committed after the same date. To guarantee the consumer rights in the Monitory Proceeding, the judge will be able to verify the existence of abusive clauses in consumer´s contracts. And he/she may declare ex-officio the unfairness of a term, which cannot be invoked in any other trial later. This way, the proceeding will be in accordance with the provisions of the European Court ruling of 14th June 2012. The Law amends 79 articles of Civil Proceedings Law, as well as provisions of the Civil Code (in relation to the statutes of limitation that goes from 15 to five years) of the Horizontal Property Law (relating to the election of President of the Community of Owners), Legal Aid, Contentious Administrative Jurisdiction and others. Brit property investors back in the market OVERSEAS buyers are mainly targeting Spain and France, according to research provided by overseas mortgage specialist Conti. In the third quarter of 2015, 40% of inquiries were about Spain and 38% concerned France. Between January to September, 46% of inquiries were for Spain and 31% for France. But the French have reversed the trend over the past last few months with 46% of inquiries in August and September, compared with Spain’s 31%. Conti director Clare Nessling said: “There’s no doubt that Spain’s appeal was tarnished following the property crash, which saw prices in some of the most desirable areas fall by up to 50%. “But, following a nightmarish few years, the property market is on the up at last, and
British investors are regaining confidence in real estate and rediscovering their love for the sights and sounds of this beautiful country. “Although the French property market has remained a lot steadier than that of Spain, many investors have been holding off to see what happens with property prices there. They are now expected to stabilise and then begin a slow increase, which is good news for anyone thinking of entering the market now.” In third place is Portugal, which accounted for 19% of inquiries in the third quarter of 2015, up 3% from January to September. Conti says it’s an ideal time buy in all three locations, with the strong pound shedding tens of thousands of pounds off property prices. A 200,000-euro property, for example, is now almost £14,000 cheaper than it was this time last year, and around £20,000 cheaper than 18 months ago.

Joanna Lumley Elvis and Me
Don't Miss...
Wednesday 4th November, ITV1, 21.00 “My Elvis was this young one, before the jumpsuits and the big lifestyle. But what was he really like? If my dream had come true and he had come over to England and I had met him, I wonder would I have liked the boy buried underneath the myth? I’m going in search of the youth catapulted to fame and fortune. ” Joanna Lumley embarks on a very personal journey for an intimate insight into Elvis Presley, the man behind the myth, for this unique one-hour documentary. The programme sees Joanna travel to Graceland and meet some of Elvis’s closest surviving friends and family, including ex-wife Priscilla Presley, for an honest portrait of what ‘The King’ was really like. One of the first records Joanna ever bought was “Hound Dog” and ever since that day she has loved Elvis. This year Elvis would have turned 80 and it is one of Joanna’s biggest regrets that she never got the opportunity to meet the man. Joanna says: “The thing about being a fan of Elvis is that you just love everything about him. I loved the way he looked, the way he sang, the way he dressed, the photographs of him, the way he performed on stage…and I loved his smile and his sense of humour. I love the fact that he never really grinned huge cheesy grins, he had a special Elvis grin, and I borrowed that for Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous…a little tribute to Elvis.” Joanna joins Priscilla Presley at Abbey Road Studios for a recording session of the new Elvis album “If I Can Dream” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. As they listen to musicians from the live orchestra recording together, the atmosphere is emotional. Priscilla says (of Elvis): “This is something he would have dreamed of doing, especially here. It gives me chills really.” Joanna accepts Priscilla’s invitation to Graceland for a personal tour of Elvis’s home, where Priscilla shares intimate memories about their married life and Joanna learns that Elvis was an insomniac who preferred milkshakes to alcohol. Joanna says: “The TV room, the living room, Elvis’s jungle-themed den, are virtually untouched. His mother’s bedroom is still as it was. It’s open to the public, but tonight, Priscilla and I will be alone, with her memories.” Elvis had just turned 22 and was the biggest sensation in music when he bought the house. But his story began in Tupelo, Mississippi, where he was born. Joanna heads there next, to see his humble beginnings for herself and visit the shack which Elvis’s father built for the family. Joanna reveals how his parents, who couldn’t read or write, were regarded at the bottom of the social ladder in the 1930s. She explains: “Dirt poor was a term coined in America in the 1930s and it meant people who were so poor that they had a roof over their heads but the ground they were on was just earth. This little shack, that Vernon, Elvis’s dad built when he was just a teenager, in fact had planks on the ground but there was pretty much nothing inside it, just a few sticks of furniture. They were dirt poor. It’s extraordinary to think that this was where he was born.”

The Hunt: The Hardest Challenge
30th October - 5th November 2015
S und a y
BBC1, 21.00
The contests between predators and prey are the most dramatic events in nature. For both sides, it’s a matter of life and death. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough and made by Alastair Fothergill (Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Frozen Planet) and Huw Cordey (Planet Earth, South Pacific), The Hunt will reveal, as never before, the difficulties predators face in catching their prey. They encounter many challenges in their lives, but the most defining, supported by statistics, is this: most hunts fail. Episode One shows how predators must overcome not only the significant defenses of their prey, but also the unique challenges of their habitats. Innovative filming techniques will put the audience right amongst the real-life drama: running alongside wild dogs chasing wildebeest; racing through the open ocean with orca, taking on 40-ton humpback whales; in Zambia, creeping alongside a leopard, stealth-hunting gazelle. Even for the most skillful hunters the outcome is never certain. The leopard’s success hinges on its powers of stealth and its ability to make the most of whatever cover it can find, to get within striking distance of its prey. The wild dogs in Africa’s open plains rely on teamwork and stamina to catch their prey, in a habitat where there’s nowhere to hide. For the killer whales it’s all about intelligence. The planet’s most patient predators, the giant crocodiles of the Nile, have the ability to wait an entire year for a meal and can hold their breath for up to two hours waiting for prey to come close enough for their lightning strike. Amur falcons travel an epic 16,000 miles every year in their search for insect prey. Darwin’s bark spiders build a web up to 25 feet wide to make a bridging line across a river. Whatever the strategy, the surprising truth is that most predators fail most of the time. It’s what makes predators some of the hardest working animals on the planet.

The second leg of Simon Reeve’s journey around the Caribbean Sea starts on beautiful islands and takes him along the coast of South America. On the beautiful and wealthy island of Barbados, he meets the owner of a traditional chattel house who has turned down offers of millions of dollars from luxury property developers and dives the reef on a hunt for invading lionfish which are disrupting the delicate ecosystem. On the green volcanic slopes of St Vincent, Simon meets the marijuana growers hoping, like their prime minister, that the drug will soon be decriminalised. Venezuela is one of the most turbulent countries in the Caribbean and from a high-rise slum in Caracas to the lawless border lands, Simon tries to work out how a country so rich in oil has fallen so low.

Simply Nigella BBC2, 20.30
Relaxed, inspiring and as mouth-watering as ever, Nigella Lawson’s latest series shows us that what - and how - we cook can make us feel better and more alive. Packed with new recipes and tips designed to make our lives easier, Nigella proves that whatever the occasion, food, in the eating and the making, should always be pleasurable. From energy-boosting breakfasts and satisfyingly simple suppers, to fuss-free ideas for feeding a crowd and ‘bowl food’ to nourish and uplift, every episode is full of irresistibly easy recipes to help create some breathing space after a busy working day, or unwind with friends and family at the weekend. In this first episode, Nigella introduces us to recipes that are quick and calm. There’s Nigella’s favourite breakfast - a twist on avocado toast, with radishes; a deliciously different Thai noodle dish with cinnamon and prawns that was inspired by a recent holiday to Thailand; and a laid-back family supper of luscious lamb ribs with Nigella sativa (black cumin seeds), served with a speedy feta and avocado salad. To help the wind down at the end of a hectic day, there’s some stoveside pottering with Nigella’s warm spiced cauliflower and chickpea salad. And a sweet treat comes in the form of a beautifully simple apricot almond cake.
Hugh’s War On Waste BBC1, 21.00 Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is on a mission to change the way we think about waste, by challenging the supermarkets and fast food industry to drastically reduce the amount of waste they generate. We live in a country where one third of the food we produce never gets eaten and the average household bins £700 worth of food a year. Hugh believes that something needs to be done. Armed with a wheelie bin, Hugh confronts ordinary shoppers in a supermarket. He’s going to try and take their shopping off them before they’ve even left the store - if they’re only going to throw it away later in the week, why not save them the bother of even taking it home? Then he heads to a parsnip farm in Norfolk, where he uncovers the truth about the supermarkets’ strict cosmetic standards: any slightly imperfect fruit or veg are rejected. Hugh is determined to try and help the farmers by getting the supermarkets to change their practices, but when he requests an interview with one of the big four supermarkets he realises that things aren’t going to be as easy as he’d hoped. In a bid to get everyone in the country to think more about how much food we throw away, Hugh visits Prestwich in Greater Manchester and goes undercover as a bin man. Poking through people’s bins, he sees first-hand just how much stuff is thrown away which shouldn’t be. He challenges the residents to drastically reduce the amount they throw away, and offers them tips and tricks to help them save food and money. Some of the residents join in willingly, and an active online community starts up. But the sceptics need more persuading, so Hugh takes them all to a recycling plant so they can see what actually happens - in the place most of them think doesn’t even exist.

Selection for the SAS is the world’s toughest job interview, and the truth about what it takes to succeed is surprising. In SAS: Who Dares Wins, a group of ex-Special Forces soldiers recreate the selection process they passed, and put 30 civilian men through it. The first two stages of the selection process revealed the recruits’ characters and exploited their weaknesses. Almost two thirds of the group have either voluntarily withdrawn or been kicked off by the DS; of the 30 recruits who started the course, only 12 remain. Now the DS focus on the recruits’ fear. With just the recruits who they rate remaining, the DS use extreme tactics to reveal who has the potential to make it through to the final phase of selection. Chief instructor Ant and his team spread fear in the group to see if anyone will hand in their armband and voluntarily withdraw.

Antony Gormley: Being Human. Alan Yentob meets the sculptor Antony Gormley, creator of the iconic Angel of the North, and uncovers the influences that have shaped his life and work. Across a career spanning more than forty years, Gormley has used sculpture as a means to examine the human condition. He explains how his strict Catholic childhood and his subsequent search for enlightenment in India influenced his decision to become a sculptor. ‘If you are brought up a Catholic you may lose you Catholicism but the fact is it has marked you for life. And the need to replace its belief system with something else becomes your life’s work.’ Imagine shows rare archive footage of the creation of Gormley’s key works, including the sculptor being fully encased in plaster to create casts of his own body, as well as footage of the installation of the Angel of the North. The film also follows exhibitions in 2015 in Paris, Florence and on Lundy Island.

The Great Pottery Throw Down BBC2, 21:00
Ten home potters from around the country compete to become Top Potter. The search for a top potter begins with a four day assignment to make stackable kitchen bowls from lumps of earthenware clay. The potters’ every move is watched over by judges Kate Malone and Keith Brymer Jones, while Sara Cox makes them feel right at home in the heart of the Potteries, Stokeon-Trent. While they wait for their bowls to dry and fire, the potters face two more challenges of their potting skill. In this week’s Spot Test, they must make and attach handles onto twenty mugs using a technique called pulling - with mixed and amusing results. In the Throw Down, the judges test the potters’ skill at the wheel, challenging them to throw as many egg cups as they can in twenty minutes. Which potter will make the most? On the last day, the potters’ bowls finally come out of the kiln and they see whether all their hard work has paid off.

Dominic Sandbrook: Let Us Entertain You
30th October - 5th November 2015
W ednesd a
BBC2, 21.00
In the years since the end of the Second World War, Britain has been a nation in decline: the loss of Empire, the collapse of industry, and the decline of political and economic influence in world affairs. However, there is one arena in which we can legitimately claim superpower status - our popular culture. In the post-war years, Britain’s cultural contribution has been second to none, from music and fashion to art, film, literature and theatre. James Bond to Agatha Christie, Andrew Lloyd Webber to John Lennon, it is through our culture that the world now sees us. In four one-hour episodes for BBC Two, historian Dominic Sandbrook argues that this is a contribution anchored firmly in our own past. A uniquely British culture, reflecting uniquely British values and outlooks which were first forged and articulated during the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era. The same impulses, the same concerns, the same ambitions that drove our Victorian forbears remain the engine of our modern culture today. In the first episode of Let Us Entertain You, Dominic examines the way in which culture has become our newest export - and a key part of our identity on the world stage. He argues that it is an industry every bit as much as shipbuilding or textile production: a commodity that has been manufactured, marketed and exported. And, like the industrial revolution, ours is a cultural revolution that has flourished in the old industrial regions, and has drawn heavily on the former connections of Empire. London may be a global cultural capital, but British culture owes as much to the industrial north and the echoes of our imperial past as it does to the South East.

All Star Mr & Mrs ITV1, 20.00
This week’s celebrity couples are Emmerdale favourites Chris Chittell and his fiancée Lesley Dunlop; Olympic champion Tessa Sanderson and her husband Densign; and presenter Rylan Clark and his fiance Dan. All Star Mr & Mrs sees three celebrity couples battling it out to see who knows the most about their other half in a bid to win up to £30,000 for their chosen charity. All they need to do is match each other’s answers, but it’s not as easy as it seems. In round 1, the celebrity is asked three questions whilst their partner is in the soundproof booth, unable to hear their answers. When the celebrity has answered all three questions, their partner comes out of the booth and is asked the same three questions. they need to match their answers to score a point. Round 2 is the paddle game. Each couple is separated by a screen so that they are unable to see each other. They are asked six questions, and have to match answers by holding up a paddle relating to either themself or their partner. If they hold up the same paddle, they have a match and win a point. The couple with the most matches at the end of the two rounds goes through to play in the final. The two losing couples each leave with £5000 for their chosen charity. All couples leave with a crystal encrusted carriage clock. In the final, the celebrity goes into the booth and their partner is asked four questions. The celebrity in the booth must match all the answers their partner has given in order to win the £30,000 jackpot.

The Last Kingdom BBC2, 21.00 Uhtred wins the protection of Alfred, but his commitment to the new king costs him his relationship with Brida. Uhtred and Brida are in prison as Father Beocca brings news of a Saxon victory at Asec’s Hill. With the battle won, Uhtred is released and he forces his way into Alfred’s rooms to confront him about his imprisonment, only to discover a quiet and unresponsive prince. Alfred’s brother, King Aethelred, is dying and Alfred will succeed him because his 15 year-old son Aethelwold is too young
to be crowned. Alfred confides in Uhtred that he is afraid of the responsibility. He asks what he should do with the king’s son, and Uhtred tells Alfred he must kill him Alfred, who sees violence as a last resort, spares his nephew and creates an enemy within. Alfred is crowned king. After Asec’s Hill the Danes have retreated but Uhtred assures Alfred that they will be back. Appreciating Uhtred’s advice and knowledge of the Danes, their bond is seemingly re-established. Brida remains sceptical of the alliance and finds the Saxon court a dull place compared to life with the Danes. Alfred makes a gift of armour to Uhtred and asks him to formally ally himself to England by marriage. Uhtred rejects the invitation, but after proving himself in dangerous peace negotiations with Ubba, Uhtred agrees to give Alfred his allegiance for one year – his ultimate goal remains reclaiming Bebbanburg. Brida, now secretly pregnant, despairs of Uhtred’s allegiance, and the rift between them grows. A clever tactician, Alfred has secured Uhtred’s loyalty knowing that Uhtred is a man of his word, but equally he understands that he is headstrong and needs to be broken. So Uhtred is sent to Hamtun (Southampton) to train his troops in fighting a shield wall with straight-talking Saxon warrior, Leofric. Leofric refers contemptuously to his charge as ‘Arseling’ but they nonetheless become great friends. In Hamtun Uhtred and Leofric hear of a Danish raid on the coastline, and come face to face with Ragnar the Younger. Uhtred convinces his adoptive brother he is innocent of killing their father Earl Ragnar. Ragnar the Younger believes him but is disappointed that Uhtred’s commitment to Alfred means he won’t join forces in revenge. Instead Brida, who has since miscarried Uhtred’s baby son, sails into the distance with Ragnar. The emotional price Uhtred has paid for his commitment to Alfred is clear. Uhtred now has no reason not to accept Alfred’s offer of a Saxon wife to cement the commitment.

IT’S NOT ALL ROCK ‘N’ ROLL
GONE are the days when men didn’t style their hair, and had nothing more to do with it than wash it. Now, most men consider looking after their hair as something important.
This season sees the return of the quiff: not the regular style, brushed back with gel or wax, but blow-dried into shape to create the height that this fashion demands. This look won’t be achieved without a little
It’s the finishing touch to their image, and I don’t have to show guys how to style it … most know and take pride in doing so.
work from yourself, which all starts with the right cut. This will ensure that it’s easier to style your hair and, most of all, that it stays looking good all day. If you’re not one for messing around for 10 minutes, this isn’t a good look for you. The style takes us back to the early Eighties when it was considered that the bigger the hair, the better. Not so much rock and roll but more Alternative. There’s nothing new in fashion or hair fashion because things just come back around, yet
we take inspiration from what has passed and give it a new “twist”. If this cut grabs your attention, you’ll need a little patience and a lot of styling products to hold it all in shape. Start with a mousse or root-lifting spray, blow back to create lift, and finish off with a large, round brush to give the fringe its curl. Perfect if you have straight-to-wavy hair, but not so easy if you’re trying to tame curls into this shape. Ask your stylist for his/her advise on how to maintain this look. Above all, ensure that your cut isn’t just a quick 10 minutes in the barber’s chair. This requires a precision cut from a stylist, who will show you what to do, and how to maintain your new style at home.
Take a snooze from booze
By Val Sainsbury DO yourself a favour: give up boozing for a month, give your liver a deserved rest and, perhaps, prevent serious illness in later life.
That’s the message from concerned doctors, who cite dramatic British research showing how abstention can heal the liver, as well as lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It also demonstrated that patients who abstained for four weeks were also at lower risk of developing cancer and diabetes. The study was the second at the Royal Free hospital to uncover the huge benefits of staying off the booze. “The results were staggering,” said Professor Kevin Moore, who was involved in both experiments. ‘If you had a drug that did this, it would create a multibillion-pound market. “There was a 40% reduction in liver fat they lost about three kilograms in weight
and their cholesterol levels improved.” In the second, larger study, the London researchers looked at 102 relatively healthy men and women in their forties taking part in a “dry January” campaign. The women had been drinking an average of 29 units of alcohol a week, almost double the Government guidelines. The men were, typically, on 31 units 10 too many. All had blood tests and liver scans, and answered detailed questionnaires. Four weeks later, the damage caused to their livers by years of heavy drinking had started to repair itself. Their “liver stiffness” - an indication of disease - had been reduced by 12.5%. And their insulin resistance - a measurement of diabetes risk - had come down by 28%. They had also lost weight, their blood pressure had dropped, and many said their concentration and sleeping levels had improved. The researchers plan to publish further details, which are expected to show the risk of developing certain cancers was also reduced. Gautam Mehta, a liver specialist who oversaw the study, said: “I
am excited. There are some findings that will be pretty novel. It’s an important study which shows the benefit from a month’s abstinence. “But what we can’t say is how long those benefits last, and how durable they are.” The initial results are already being examined by Department of Health officials, who are preparing new guidelines on safe drinking. Current recommendations state women should have no more than three units a day or 14 units over a week, while men should not exceed four units a day, or 21 a week. One unit is equivalent to less than half-a-glass of wine or half-a-pint of beer, depending on their strength and size. But health profes-
sionals say these limits should be reduced. They also want adults to be told to have at least two or three days off a week to allow their bodies to recover. The Royal Free’s first experiment featured 10 men and women, un-
dertaking a dry January last year. Tom Smith, of Alcohol Concern, said: “This evidence confirms what a growing number of other studies have shown - that having even just one month off from alcohol
has incredible health benefits.” And Andrew Langford, of the British Liver Trust, said: “It provides good evidence that simple, behavioural change can make a real difference to the health of your liver.”

Entertainment
39 CW
We’re just performing, for Kicks and Tricks! By Jamie Droo OVER the last two months, a few new acts have emerged on the circuit which I have been fortunate to either see or work with.
The first I’m writing about falls into the genre of variety. People say this is the spice of life and, within entertainment, many believe that the more variety, the better chance of keeping an audience’s attention. Kicks and Tricks is a show which does just that. There are three members in this act, put together originally for hotel audiences. However, the trio felt they could adapt the show to be more suitable to the showbars and various pubs on the Island offering entertainment. The contrast between what is deemed a hotel show and a show for a bar is somewhat stark. Under the corporate hotels’ umbrella, there are certain restrictions which generally concern the boundaries of taste. In a hotel, bad language would never be tolerated in a show, and neither would any strong innuendo towards more adult material. In most bars, that tolerance can wear extremely thin and in some of them, anything goes! However, that is generally judged by the professionalism of the artiste. And where expressive language would normally be used freely, an act might choose a tamer approach during school holidays, with more families in the audience. The way Kicks and Tricks have adapted their show to suit is subtle, to say the least, and nothing too drastic to possibly offence in any way … unless, of curse, the audience is made up of devout nuns! John, Vicky and Bhambi work really well together in this variety act. It involves magic and illusion, some of
which is close-up and involves members of the audience assisting them. There are strong vocals from Vicky as well, along with choreographed dance routines from John or Bhambi and, occasionally, all three together. There is a good selection of well-known songs throughout the show, coupled with the other elements already mentioned. It is an eclectic mix of everything that is variety, with plenty of comedy, too, and the 45-minute performance includes lots of costume changes. The trio are aware that some bars require a one-hour show, so they have an extra bolt-on, Vicky performing a selection of dance tunes to keep the audience on their feet. This is a perfect transition for those late-opening bars which want to keep the place bouncing for another couple of hours after the featured show is over. Kicks and Tricks have some spare slots, but I doubt they’ll last long, and this will be a great show to have in place ready for the Christmas family audiences. The second of the two new acts I’m featuring this week have chosen to perform music which could really be given a genre of its own. Although most of The Beatles’ distinctive music was produced in the Sixties, the hit machine also known as the Fab Four also had their own sound in the guise of an army of fans and a plethora of songs, ingrained in the minds of generations. Even people born long after The Beatles split up know the songs and can quite easily sing along to them. Adam See and Paul Ward have taken on the roles of McCartney and Lennon. They also play guitars in their act, as well as sing. Paul plays bass - an exact replica of the same model used by McCartney - while Adam plays an acoustic guitar with electronic pick-ups. They play along to custom tracks, from which
the “live” guitar elements are stripped from the track. The duo are well-established multiinstrumentalists: both play piano and keyboard, bass, rhythm and lead guitars. And Paul can also play the drums (as can McCartney). It is this musical experience which enables them to put their tracks together so well with medleys and custom arrangements of The Beatles biggest hits. Both have taken on their roles fully and can emulate that distinctive sound and look. Their attire is as smart as was the Fab Four’s in the Sixties, and although there are just two of them on stage, they recreate the sound so well. The look, I would say is a little harder to maintain for one of them. Paul has naturally, grown out of his own hair, and dons a wig to complete the look. However, this is Tenerife and it’s very hot on any stage, so he has to tolerate profuse leakage during their one-hour show. And I’m told it takes him at least two hours afterwards to replace lost fluids. These boys clearly enjoy what they do on stage and work well together, with good banter between themselves as well as interacting with the audience between songs. It is one of those shows that sparks dancing from the onset, and ends with everyone joining in with a medley of those Beatles’ songs that everyone knows - like one described by a 15-yearold in the audience as: “the one that goes, Na, na, na, na … na, na, na, na”, which just proves that what I mentioned earlier is so true. Even if you didn’t live through their era, you must be aware that the music is timeless, and any entertainment billboard featuring a show by The Beatles will always attract the attention of passing trade. It’s so true that you can’t buy love, but you can certainly buy talent. So get a Beatles show booked before there’s no space left.

Juniper threat’s no tonic for gin SCOTLAND’S juniper plant is being attacked by a deadly disease, and that means the country’s gin supply could run dry.
The purple berries give gin its aromatic flavour, but the plant is now in a critical state, according to conservation charity Plantlife. Juniper has been found in Scotland since the last Ice Age, and it’s that special taste, which gin such a tonic! But the fungal disease phytophthora austrocedrae, sweeping through populations, could soon kill it off, and there are concerns for Scottish
gin distillers, many of whom use the locallysourced berry. Much of the juniper
used in the big companies’ gin production now comes from Eastern Europe. But cam-
paigners are calling for action to protect the plant in Scotland, its last remaining UK base. Juniper shrubs are either male or female, and it can be difficult for isolated plants to pollinate successfully. Last year, 79% of juniper in Scotland was
discovered to be either dead or more than a century old, limiting the plant’s ability to seed even more. Juniper has already been lost from 25% of the areas where it once flourished. And, said the charity, apart being used in gin production, the plant provides food for wildlife. Murdo Fraser, MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, said: “Juniper is one of our most iconic species. Used not only by birds as cover and food, it is a key native plant for human use, too. “Plantlife’s report is a call to action for all of us to do what we can for juniper, and to ensure that future generations get to smell crushed juniper
berries and delight in the assorted shape and sizes of juniper in our countryside.” He added: “Land manager, visitors, conservationists and politicians can all do something for juniper.” Deborah Long, head of Plantlife Scotland, said: “Volunteer citizen science surveys are helping us understand what is happening to juniper here. “Thanks to these citizen scientists, we can start working with land-owners to help juniper communities become more resistant to this new disease. But it needs active conservation effort and intervention for it to survive.”

sold, but yours isn’t. Selling a house has become a very different ball-game over the last 10 years. It´s no longer enough that you like living there and think the house is great, and surely any potential buyers will see that. The economic situation means that buyers will have a number of properties to view, and, inevitably, will be making comparisons.
Their first introduction to your property may be through the internet before they even come to the Island, so that photo had better be a good one! Many people don’t have the vision to see past clutter and personal effects. If you are still living in the house while it is for sale, it can be difficult - but definitely worthwhile - to keep everything very
HOT BRIGHT NOW! ALTHOUGH we don’t see much winter weather here, the majority of us tend to have a winter wardrobe. And, as the darker shades come forward, what better way to liven them up by adding a splash of colour?
Bang on-trend is another hot mix of primary colours, added to darker shades, which really looks striking against a black background - or any muted shade. There are no rules, and you can even add the colour with clever use of accessories, adding your chosen colour to your outfit. Even greys look hot with the added touch of colour, and adding acid green
to your greys and cerise can look just as good. If you’re going for more earthy tones, such as browns and beiges, then yellow is the colour to look for as you piece together your outfit. It all depends on you how you add the contrasting colour, but make sure you keep the contrast as your secondary colour. For example, if you’re taking a black skirt with a matching black jacket, add the “hotter” colour underneath the jacket and tie it in with complementing shoes. This is so easy to do, and you can add these colours to other outfits in your wardrobe - thus expanding your selection. Don’t just think of brighter colours for the summer. There’s nothing more stylish than seeing a bright outfit when everyone else is in black.
clean and tidy, even if it means a desperate clean-up to take the photos, and again just before viewings! You might need to move your personal effects, such as family photos and sentimental objects and put them out of sight or in storage, because they can be distracting and prevent someone from feeling they could envisage themselves living there. If you aren´t living in the property while it is for sale, you have the opportunity to “dress” it to its best advantage, yet a surprising number of people don’t take the time to do this. First impressions are very important, and these will be formed right at the front door. Make sure the front door is clean, and touch-up any paintwork
around it if necessary. Don’t forget to pay attention to the entrance hall, and make sure it is welcoming, uncluttered and, ideally, has a wow factor. Less is more, and a clear dressing table or shelf and mirror could be all it takes to make the entrance hall look special. It goes without saying that the house should be spotlessly clean as well - another matter often overlooked by sellers. It doesn’t cost much to give the place a good clean, but potential buyers can be put off before they´ve even come through the door. And a dirty kitchen or bathroom are likely to put anyone off. While it´s best not to have too much personal stuff around as this can be distracting, it´s also true that you shouldn’t strip a property of all of
its character because it may appear cold and impersonal. After all, your aim is that potential buyers can see themselves living in your property, and putting their own personal touch on it. Find a balance between the property looking cozy, well-equipped and attractive, and looking neglected, or even derelict. It´s surprising how much this will affect the price you achieve as well, because potential buyers are mentally putting a value on everything as they look around. If you have a strong interior design scheme, consider whether it will help sell the property. Just because you like the colour purple, for example, doesn’t mean everyone else does. And while you might find one buyer who shares your taste, the chances are you will do better with a more neutral scheme. Bear in mind, as well, that pale colours make rooms look both brighter and bigger, and darker tones will bring walls forward and make spaces look smaller. Therefore, investing in a coat of white paint, and a really good clean throughout, could be an excellent investment for the time and money involved. K9 news update
When Pablo met Presley
PABLO, who has seen many dogs re-homed over the years since being dumped at the K9 kennels in July 2009, must have felt his turn would never come. But his photo was spotted by a German family on our website and so after, being resident at the kennels for over six years, he was flown to Stuttgart on 10th September. He was accompanied by two kennel-mates, Aldea and Cagney, who were also travelling to new homes. A week after his arrival, Pablo attended an “Open Day”, where he met Homer, Presley, Hutch, Frankie and Laurel, who all have loving homes now in the Stuttgart area. The picture of Pablo, two weeks after his arrival, leaves no doubt that he has well and truly settled in with his new family. Only Auto and Rose have been at the kennels longer than Pablo, but perhaps their chance of a new home is just around the corner. K9 Xmas dinner Our Christmas Dinner is being held on Saturday, 12th December, at Restaurant Cueva La Campesino, in Aldea Blanca. Cabaret is in the capable hands of Aidy Evans and Storm Duo. 43 CW Scouts and cubs Mini Max is a reign in the rain pocket dynamo Community News
THE 1st Tenerife Scout Group have just returned from a successful weekend’s camping at the Camp Nauta site, near Guaza. After all the fundraising events and donations over the last year, which enabled the organisers to buy the necessary equipment, four leaders took five cubs and six scouts away for a fun-filled weekend. It was touch and go with the dreadful but intermittent weather, but after nearly cancelling the event, the group put on a brave face and pressed ahead with their adventure. Activities included cooking on open fires, wide games in the dark, compass-reading and orienteering, pioneer-
ing, a blind trial, campfire songs, and taking part in the swimmers’ badge, Stage 1, which they all completed successfully. Delighted Scoutmaster Steve Leisel, who formed the pack in Costa del Silencio last year, said: “All the kids enjoyed it and from the feedback from their parents, who thanked us, they did, too! “It gave us, the leaders, a lot of satisfaction to be able to do this, and we look forward to our next adventure with the children.” If you feel your children might be interested in the group, which features Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, contact Steve Leisel at 1st.tenerifescoutgroup@gmail. com
THEY say good things come in small packages. Well, look at this pocket dynamo. Max is around 2-3 years old and weighs just 3kg.
The wee man needs a home, but can you offer him one? If so, please call Sue on 629 388 102. Thank you, MustCat We had another a lovely trip out on MustCat last weekend, and were lucky to happen upon a family of bottlenose dolphins early on in the journey, just off Palm Mar. They swam with us for around half-an-hour before we carried on to see the pilot whales, of which there are around 800 in our waters. Thank you, as always, to Justin Muscat for his ongoing support. Halloween Fund-raiser We’re staging a Halloween fund-raiser tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon from 2pm to 6pm (ish), thanks to Milhany’s, next to the Santa Maria hotel in San Eugenio.
And it’s shaping up to be a good one. Suzy q and Derrick Lynes will be introducing you to top cabaret performers like Jacqui Peters, Steve Delsey, Kerry Railton, Seamus, Mark the resident guitarist, Willy Ray and more. Big Xmas raffle Our 2014 Christmas raffle was so popular that we have decided to repeat it this year, with superb prizes again. Win a FitBit lifestyle band, a head camera or a drone for just two euros a ticket. It will be drawn on Boxing Day on the Top Square, Golf del Sur, and tickets are now on sale in our shops.

By Vanessa Vee SOMETIMES, you have to remind yourself of the luxury of our natural beauty on the Island. And that’s why we decided to revisit the magnificent whales and dolphins, which occupy our waters all year round.
There are many ways of doing this: yachts, catamarans, jet skis and even kayaks. We opted for Freebird’s luxury catamarans, which sail daily from Puerto Colon in Las Americas. Although coaches can pick you up from various destinations, North and South, we took a casual drive down to the port, where there is easy, reasonably-priced parking. We then collected our boarding passes and took our places at the front - on

AT some point in our driving career, many of us will have answered, or attempted to answer, a telephone call on our mobile phone while on the road. This, we all know, is illegal and can be very dangerous. And, in some cases, fatal! Guardia Civil statistics reveal that any distraction while driving is likely to cause an accident or incident, and the use of a mobile phone tops the list of reasons in almost every country. We used to be allowed to answer an incoming call, provided we were wearing an ear device, made specifically for this purpose, But it was made illegal some time ago. Currently, using a hands-free device is legal, but touching your

the cargo nets! Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of seats around the spacious catamaran, but for a real wind-in-your-hair, sea-spray experience, you can’t go wrong with the cargo nets. Behind us the fullyoccupied deck-chairs were people applying sun-cream, popping on hats and sunglasses and stretching out for a tan. An announcement that the bar was open was enough for us - and we were off! The crew on board the One For You, just one of the fleet, went through our safety instructions for any occasion, including looking after the sea life and making sure no debris was discarded into the water. By sailing in the morning, the temperature was comfortable, and the kids took to doing their “titanic poses” for the camera instantly as we set off in search of the aquatic life. It didn’t take long. Before we had even finished our sandwiches, supplied from the crew, and our first round of drinks, the captain informed us of a group of
Pilot whales. Within a safe distance to avoid crowding them, the engines were cut. It always seems so obvious to me how people on the Island are extremely aware about the conservation of our sea life. We are privileged to share their home and see them in their natural surroundings. However, these beautiful creatures, curious
and intelligent, came to us. Two juveniles were playing so much that they almost bumped into the side of the catamaran, but Mum was on hand to keep them in check. Next, a group of adults could be seen approaching from behind us. Everyone changed position on board to make sure of a fantastic view. And the crew shared infor-
mation across the microphone constantly about their behaviours, habitat, lifestyle ...even names! A baby could be seen, staying very close to Mum and Dad, and we were told that this was, indeed, a rare sight as she was only a weekor-so old. The whales stayed with us for almost 20 minutes before diving out of sight. We set sail again for
the bay, but on the way we were informed of another family ahead; this time, Bottlenose dolphins. I had goose bumps. We could see their fins in the distance, riding the waves, but on this occasion they chose not to join us for games. Another day perhaps. After all, they are free to do whatever they please in their home. Along the coast, our catamaran arrived at a beautiful, sandy bay and dropped anchor, allowing us to descend the steps into the refreshing water. A short swim, then back on board for more refreshments before beginning the sail home. Every time we sail on a whale-and-dolphin excursion, the experience stays with us ... seeing wildlife in their natural habitat. It’s priceless! To book your experience aboard the Freebird Catamarans, visit www.tenerifesunshine. com - or drop into any Tenerife Sunshine office. GPS device while on the move is not. There is only one way to answer a call when in your car and that is to stop in a safe, convenient place that does not hinder other road-users (this does not mean the hard shoulder of the autopista). If you miss a call, you can always ring back when you have stopped driving. Your life, and that of other road-users or even pedestrians, in some cases, are then safe from harm. New technology being brought into the market, such as smart watches and similar devices that can be linked to your mobile phone, pose an increased risk potentially as they are often more distracting than just a ringing, or often a song
used as a ring-tone. This market is increasing as people search for more up-to-date technology to keep up with the times. And, often, to prove to their “friends” that they have the latest gadget on the market. With the development of driver-less cars moving at a rapid speed, internet giant Google is attempting to help solve some of the problems caused by humans behind the steering wheel. And it has patented a system, primarily for smart watches but which, no doubt, will be expanded eventually if successful, to detect your personal location - in the driver’s seat, passenger’s seat, or rear of the vehicle, etc. Not only will it detect your position, but it will
be able to monitor your movements, such as steering the car or gearchanging. If the device detects that you are the driver, it automatically disables some of the more distracting functions; thereby reducing the risk of a loss of concentration and/or a potential collision or accident. While humans will be in control of any such device, the element of risk remains - as does the temptation to multitask, such as answering your phone while continuing to drive, either one-handed or with neither hand on the steering wheel. I am sure we have all witnessed people driving and texting at the same time. It’s an all-too-common occurrence, and the
fact that a global enterprise such as Google is trying in some way to assist with these problems should be recognised and praised. Others will, no doubt, be quick to follow, or may even be working on their own prototype as I write. But they won’t disclose their idea for fear of another company stealing it. For Android phones, there is now an app available called the Muting App. This is a free app and by activating it, either manually or automatically, all calls and notifications are silenced, vibrate is cancelled and the screen is switched off. This has been designed to avoid distractions while driving. By activating this app, all calls, notifications and vibrate
are switched off from the moment the engine is started until the car is parked. If a call is repeated, it is considered urgent and will, where possible, be passed to the vehicle’s hands-free system. No calls are lost. They are stored and, with the driver simply getting out of the car, all normal functions return. Other muting apps act in different ways and are generally activated through the vehicle’ hands-free Bluetooth, or manually. In these cases, your contacts can see your status as either not available or driving. Some Apps advise the caller by a chat that you are driving and, when this is not available, it is possible to notify him/ her by text message.

Oh so sweet against Osasuna CD Tenerife 2 Osasuna 2
By Roscoe NOW this was a game of football.
Last week, in defeat, Tenerife showed that they were just starting to come together, and this excellent point against the league leaders was further proof. And it was a fine reward for a battling performance, which saw the hosts finish the match with nine men. It didn’t start that way, though, as Osasuna took a fourthminute lead through Roberto Torres’s sixth goal of the season. The 26-year-old looks a different player this season, and his goals from midfield are making all the difference. Tenerife sucked it up and took the game to the visitors. To these
LEWIS HAMILTON, surely now the Muhammad Ali of Formula One, deservedly collected his third world title on Sunday, outwitting Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg and everyone else who attempted to prolong his march to glory.
Mechanic faults aside - and they have been rare this season - Hamilton, regarded as a genuine racer and fighter, always seems to find a solution, as did Ali on so many occasions. True champions, through and through. When Rosberg threatened to take their duel into at least one more race, Lewis applied the pressure, pushed and pushed and, eventually, the German made an unforced error, seven laps from the end of the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. It was the spark his rival needed to take control, rewrite F1 history as the first British driver to win back-toback titles, and join an
eyes, they looked a yard sharper than a few weeks ago and the crisp pace, combined with a higher tempo, saw Osasuna on the back foot. And CDT got their reward late in time added on as Omar Perdomo scored his first senior goal. And boy, did the
youngster enjoy it! It made the team talk easier for Raul Agne, but all the good work was undone six minutes into the restart with Alberto taking an early bath. This signalled a second half which wouldn’t look out of place in an Sixties’ FA Cup-tie.
Osasuna threw on an extra attacker and Enrique Monreal got his reward when Oier restored the away lead 25 minutes from time. Some meaty challenges and counter-attacks became the order of the day as both sides went for the fourth goal. Agne brought on won-
derkid Choco Lozano in place of right-back Camera, and when Nano replaced the toothless Pedro Martin, Tenerife slipped into another gear. Try as they may the goal wouldn’t come, and with keeper Dani needing five staples in a head wound, and
Champ Hamilton pulls no punches! elite club of three-time F1 title winners. There is no love lost between the rivals, and that suits Hamilton because he knows it will always give him a vital edge. Rosberg absolutely hates it when, after beating Hamilton to pole position, he sees him roar past to take the lead, as he has done in the last two races. No wonder he remained sullen-faced as Hamilton celebrated winning an extraordinary, incident-packed, Texas thriller. No wonder, when it was all over, he refused to participate in the traditional champagnespraying podium celebrations with Hamilton and third-placed Sebastian Vettel. No wonder Rosberg threw his runner’sup podium cap back at Hamilton in a fit of pique behind the scenes. And no wonder he complained bitterly
about his team-mate’s grid start. “Lewis was too aggressive today - he took it too far,” said Rosberg. It was extremely aggressive. We hit each other. Well, Lewis came into me, and that’s not good.
But I can’t say any more than that.” There’s more bad news ahead for the German because Hamilton is adamant his pursuit of further Formula One glory goes on, despite achieving
his lifelong ambition of matching late Brazilian Ayrton Senna, his great F1 idol. Hamilton awoke on Monday, probably with a sore head, and posted a heartfelt, truly inspirational message on his Facebook page. “Moments like these are rare, yet powerful beyond measure,” he wrote. “The journey is not over yet, but the happiness I feel today could light up a city. What a dream it is to wake up a 3xF1 World Champion. “I am but a small link in a big chain of great people who have helped me along the way. There is nothing we cannot do, reach or conquer. We do it together. Dream big people.” Lewis received unexpected congratulations on the podium from singer Sir Elton John, who appeared as a guest of friend Bernie Ecclestone, the billionaire F1 boss. And he insists he
young Nano being stretchered off late on after a sickening head clash (he would have a fit in the ambulance, but was released from hospital 24 hours later) it looked as though blood was spilt for nothing. And not wanting to go all Bonnie Tyler but deep into time added on, Tenerife were “looking out for a hero”. It duly came from the strangest of places. German started his Tenerife career like Bambi on ice, but he has improved. And last weekend he popped up from nowhere to pinch a late goal, a point and send the fans home dreaming that this season may not be a blowout. We are back in the drop- zone, but in this crazy, stupid league, there are genuine grounds for optimism. has no intention of taking it easy in Sunday’s Mexico Grand Prix. “The motivation part is really easy,” said the 30-year-old. “I was born with it, so it doesn’t go away. Winning is winning - it never gets old.” Worryingly for the opposition, he added: “I feel like this is the beginning. I will keep pushing. Everything I compete in, I want to win. I don’t feel the need to go search for motivation at all.” Nigel Mansell, 1992 champion and a hugely-modest hero in his time, sees no reason why Lewis should not be celebrating again next year. “There is no one to touch Lewis at the moment, and he deserves every accolade,” he said. “Lewis is doing the job he needs to do. And I say to people: ‘Watch Lewis now - he’ll get even better’. “He is a marvellous driver - he’s a racer and a fighter! With the cars’ reliability today, there is an opportunity to win many more races and championships and Lewis is the hot favourite for 2016 and, possibly, even 2017.” Rosberg and Co, you have been warned.

Gleeful Gaffers get going! HAVING signed a couple of quality darters a while back, Gaffers’ first team were expected to start climbing the Division 1 table quite quickly. But that didn’t happen.
Their results haven’t really caught the eye. Until now! Facing fourth-placed Booth-
en Titans, who are no mugs, they finally got it all together with a cracking performance. It included Tom’s fifth maximum and enabled them to rout Titans with a 7-1 victory, which left Gaffers just five points behind them with three games in hand! Boothen Army entertained Exiles Bar, who can also chuck a dart, but they ran out 6-2 victors, despite a 150 check-out by Jamie.

at Sundowners, while Naughty Nautas won the trebles leg to finish all-square with Picassos. That last result made it a good night all round for Gaffers, with the Jucee Girls, their B string, enjoying a 5-3 victory at Ourplace Playgirls. Finally, a special mention for three players from the Oasis Fm Darts League,

who travelled to Avila in mainland Spain last weekend to compete in the southern Europe qualifier for the 2016 PDC world championships. David Berry, Johnny Lightfoot and Richard Roberts came up against some stern opposition and, sadly, did not qualify. But they must be applauded for their efforts. Well done lads!
Skipper Kane is Untouchable AFTER a few weeks of high point-scoring in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football league, last weekend saw a drop as the premium players misfired or were out injured. There were, of course, one or two exceptions, but the 50-point mark seems to have been the average. Let’s hope they pull their socks up this weekend. The point-scoring team of the week was testament to results picked up by one or
two of the lower teams, notable Sunderland’s derby win over Newcastle. As a result, Sunderland contributed four players to the team. Spurs provided two, in-
cluding highest pointscorer Harry Kane, after his hat-trick against Bournemouth. The rest came from Arsenal, Leicester, West Brom, Watford and West Ham. In the Oasis Fm league, it was as you were at the top as Frank Devany’s team, Baines On Toast, stayed there, although his lead has been cut to just 17 points. Holding on to second spot was Passo Utd, coached by Trevor Passingham who had a
decent week, cutting the lead and gaining a little space from the chasing pack. Team of the week, considering the low point-scoring, goes to the Untouchables, led by David Retberg. They amassed an impressive 86 points, with the whole team picking up points. But he had Harry Kane as captain, which gave him 34 points on which to build his final total. There are some tasty games among
this weekend’s fixtures, which could yield high points.
Time to shuffle the pack a little, me thinks!

Chelsea v Liverpool
According to the UK national press, Mourinho is finished if Chelsea lose this game. But he has always enjoyed putting one over Liverpool, so I expect to see a fired-up Chelsea. They need to be better defensively, and try to light the spark from midfield. An early goal would settle them. So far, Jurgen Klopp hasn’t won a game as Liverpool manager. But then again, he hasn’t lost one - and what a great game this would be to record his first victory. However, he must sort out his forward line because Liverpool look poor up front. Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-1
Crystal Palace v Man Utd
Palace made a good start to the season but, of late, they have been a bit inconsistent. They are normally strong at home and will, hopefully, use this to their advantage. Counter-attacking is their ploy because they have some real pace in the team. And one man out to prove a point is Wilfried Zaha. United were the better team in the Manchester derby, but they just couldn’t find a way past the City defence. Van Gaal has made some tough decisions of late, benching Depay and picking Valencia at right-back instead of the ever-present Darmian. But will he drop Rooney, who seems to be holding the team back? Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-2

Mourinho on a knife-edge
THE Premier League is regarded as one of the most exciting in the world. But the action just now is being overshadowed by managerial changes and off-field stories. Let’s hope we can put that aside this weekend and get back to what the league produces best: football!
great game. But you can guarantee they will employ different tactics this time. Aguero is still missing, and Bony looks a little uncomfortable on his own up front. Sterling is supposed to be supporting him but, just as he did in a Liverpool shirt, he went missing in the big game. As I predicted! Norwich, who are struggling, really need a decent result to restore some confidence, but can this possibly provide them with the perfect opportunity? What will go against them is their woeful defence. It’s the league’s second-worst, and they will have a busy afternoon against City. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A
Newcastle v Stoke
Just when Steve McClaren thought his Newcastle team had turned a corner, they endured a good hiding in the derby game. It will be difficult for them to bounce back, but the players will be chomping at the bit to get back on the pitch. Sometimes, though, you can try too hard and they need to play a sensible, patient game. Stoke are underachieving in the league, given the players Mark Hughes has brought
to the club. They are struggling to adapt to his attacking style, despite a midweek penalty-shoot-out win in the Capital One Cup against Chelsea. Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-1
playing, Arsenal could have a real chance of a league title this season. But they need to keep pace, and this could be a tricky encounter for them. Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-1
Swansea v Arsenal
Watford v West Ham
Rumours were coming out of the Liberty Stadium that Garry Monk was on the verge of losing his job. But a win against Aston Villa helped push them away. They had such a good 2014-15 season that expectations were high. Yet the Swans have a good squad and will surely finish in the top half of the table. Arsenal moved to the top of the league until City drew level and leapfrogged them on goal difference. The way other clubs are
They are the league’s joint-lowest scorers, but Watford must hope they have turned a corner after Troy Deeney’s first Premier League goal at the weekend, especially as he was so prolific in the Championship. They have a tight defence and if the goals do come, they will start climbing the table. West Ham are riding a huge wave of confidence as they continue to pick up good results against the league’s supposedly bigger teams. Bilic’s players are fighting
for him and for each other, and it’s paying dividends on the pitch. Andy Carroll’s return from injury could be a big boost, especially after his winner against Chelsea. Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A
they will need to defend well. If they can keep Everton out in the first half, a win could be on the cards. Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-2
West Brom v Leicester
Saints seemed to be heading for defeat against Liverpool until Mane popped up with an equaliser. Unfortunately, he also picked up a red card, leaving striking duties to Pelle, who does not convince me. South Coast bragging rights should see them through this game, though. Things are not looking good for Bournemouth following two heavy defeats. Dependent on other results, they could find themselves in the bottom three this weekend. They have picked up some nasty injuries and are now realising just how tough a task they face in the Premier League. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A
The Baggies will be happy with recent results. They sit comfortable in midtable, having pulled away from the relegation places. They are tighter at the back and look more of a threat going forward, but they need to be consistent, especially at home. Salomon Rondon needs to keep scoring to repay his transfer fee. Leicester are flying, and it is all down to Jamie Vardy, who has scored in his last eight games (discounting his brief appearance and midweek penalty miss against Hull in the Capital Cup). Ranieri doesn’t need to tinker too much as his team are doing the business, week in, week out. Prediction: Draw Last season: 2-3
Everton v Sunderland
The Toffees rolled over a little too easily against United, but looked better in the defeat at Arsenal. They will have taken those games on the chin but know they cannot slip up against Sunderland. Lukaku is key to Everton’s form and he has not been at his best of late. But if he steps up to the plate, though, three points should be theirs. Sunderland will be buoyed by their superb derby victory against Newcastle, but they can’t be too overconfident because those types of games are always different. This is going to be a tough match for them and
Southampton v Bournemouth
Tottenham v Aston Villa
Spurs come into this game on the back of a heavy win, via a Harry Kane hat-trick, and they must believe they can do the same to the league’s bottom club. They didn’t make the greatest of starts to the season but are beginning to find their feet and form. Lamela has become a key player after struggling to make an impact, and Erikson’s free-kicks are helping. Villa finally parted company with manager Tim Sherwood, and you have to wonder who will be mad enough to take the job. Whoever it is has a huge task on his hands because, the way they are playing, they could be relegated before Christmas. Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-1

Champs nearly nailed THE Direct Telecom Pool League is really starting to gather pace and, with the standard at an all-time high, it’s nigh on impossible trying to second-guess results.
Tenerife Hammers C played host to reigning Division One champs Gaffers A on Tuesday night and, needless to say, the smart money was on the visitors, with not many giving the home team much of a chance. But inspired by Ken The Glove, they started brightly. They didn’t let Gaffers A settle and took a shock 3-1 lead, which quickly became 4-1. The upset of the season was on the cards. Yet Gaffers clawed their way back into the match and soon levelled the score, only for Tony to beat Dan. Then Bobby Baker, who had spent all day baking a quiche, beat Kev! The Hammers had at least a draw! Could they take the victory, though? Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. Ken H wasted a golden opportunity to win the match when he put the black in too early, enabling Neil to wrap up the final frame to give Gaffers a draw. It was two points dropped by the league leaders, and the scoreline didn’t really reflect the match! While Gaffer got out of jail and with Dreamers A not in action, Confident Treehouse A had an opportunity to make up some ground. They were odds-on faves to get an away win at Terrace Roosters, who themselves were upbeat on the back of their first
win of the season last week. However, it was back to the old routine for the home team. They fluffed their lines time and again and, before long, they were 7-1 down and Treehouse had the points. With Gaffers A being held, it was up to Gaffers B to put in a performance against Palms B. The away side, looking to bounce back after last week’s derby loss, started brightly and picked up frames. But the hosts, no push-overs, were matching them on the table. It was a tough one to call, but Palms B got their noses in front and took the points, thanks to a rare win from Paul. In Los Abrigos, the Phoenix Pensioners (sorry, Potters), played host to Terrace Bantams and it looked like being a tricky night for them when the visitors took an early 3-1 lead. But Lady Luck intervened for the home side and, over the next four games, she punished the Bantams as the score swung back in Potters’ favour. The visitors were rattled and could not find any rhythm in the last session as Potters secured a good, albeit lucky, success. The Phoenix, away at Palms A, showed little of the form of which we know they are capa-

ble. That said, Palms A were not in great shape, either. And with JT out of sorts, it was as though they were playing with three. It was close as they traded frames but Phoenix, with Bubbles in fine form, just did enough to take the points Rewind A, slowly finding their form, were hopeful of another win when entertaining Exiles A. But they made the worst possible start and were soon 4-1 down. In earlier matches,

this would probably have been game over. But, having added a little steel, they roared back to take the next five games - and the advantage. But Mark beat Lee and Exiles were back in it, looking for the draw. Wilf, having seen his beloved Sheffield Wednesday beat Arsenal, had renewed inspiration and beat Tel to earn Rewind an exciting win. In Division Two, Treehouse B are making the early running and, against Tenerife Pool Tables at home, they were looking to add another three points to their tally. They made a bright start, but the visitors played some fine pool and frames were being traded. It was difficult to see where a winner would come from as both teams dug deep. But neither could get the edge and the game finished with honours even. With Bluebell B not in action, Crown B knew

they had a chance to move into second spot. But first they had to negotiate a match against stable-mates Crown A. First blood went to the “away” side when Steve beat John, but the home side woke up and took the next five frames. Bill pulled one back with victory over Joel, but the damage had already been done, Greg the Bounty Hunter beat Laslo to ensure the draw and Joel beat Jim for the win, allowing Crown B to move up to second spot. Splash Bar, also keeping themselves in the mix, were away at Dreamers B. They are playing with confidence, on the back of a decent run of form, and it showed as they took early games. Dreamers put up a spirited fight, but Splash had their noses in front - and that is where they stayed, eventually wrapping up an 8-4 win. Sabores are league newcomers this season - the first time we have had a team from El Medano. Unfortunately, things aren’t going to plan for them
because they are still looking for their first points of the campaign. But credit where credit is due, they are holding their heads up and having a go, and this week saw them host Picasso’s A. It was to be another disappointing night for them, though, as the visitors took early frames and had soon built a commanding lead. Sabores picked up a few frames, but they were merely consolations. Those points are going to come, guys, so stick at it! It was derby night down in Hoppys Bar as the B team took on their A-team comrades. These games are always tense affairs because nobody wants to lose and have to suffer their opponent’s bragging, and this was no different. Frames became games of chess, with players stalking around the table, nobody wanting to make a mistake. The scoreline ebbed and flowed but, eventually, the two sides had to make do with a share of the points.
