Rajoy salutes his elite force SPANISH Premier Mariano Rajoy paid a fitting tribute to the Guardia Civil elite as he handed over the national flag at last Friday’s annual ceremony.
He told Zone 1 officers: “It is always important to honour the symbols that unite us all. By respecting them, we respect both ourselves and our project for a modern, prosperous and open country. “The Benemérita (national flag) is a source of pride for us all, and testimony of that is, in the last few years, it has been the most highly-rated institution by the Spanish people, as reflected in polls carried out by the Sociological Research Centre (CIS). The Prime Minister stressed that the commitment and generosity of the Guardia Civil is what “allows our society to fully exercise its democratic rights and values”. After thanking the force for its “silent and responsible dedication” over the last 171 years, Rajoy highlighted that those who belong to this noble body render their services “without seeking any other satisfaction other than fulfilling their duty”. According to the PM: “These ‘exceptional ser-
vices’ are what we want to reward by handing over the national flag, adding: “It is the highest, collective distinction that can be awarded to a great unit of the Guardia Civil.” The Spanish President added: “The flag of Spain is the flag of us all and, moreover, symbolises the nation. It is a sign of the sovereignty, independence, unity and integrity of our common homeland and represents the higher values expressed in the Spanish Constitution.” Rajoy also stressed: “It is always important to honour the symbols that unite us all because, by respecting them, we are respecting ourselves and our project for a modern, prosperous and open country - a country that knows how to give value to its unity and showcase its diversity.”
He recalled the words of King Felipe VI during his proclamation speech in Parliament: “There are many ways to feel Spanish, but they are all based on the equality of all the people of Spain, on the solidarity of its peoples and on respect for the law.” Rajoy, awaiting the General Election he has called for next month, said of the Guardia Civil that, since its foundation, it had always found a way to adapt and remain neutral “to the contingencies of each political period”. He also said that the “protective” work of the Benemérita had not only been carried out in Spain, but it had also done a “great job” in countries such as Haiti, Lebanon, Senegal and Nepal. The Spanish PM pointed out one of the Guardia
Civil’s “greatest achievements - “its key role in the political defeat of the terrorist gang ETA”. He then paid tribute both to the 243 officers of the Guardia Civil who died in terrorist attacks while doing their duty, and to the families of all those officers, who have always known how to be a “calm rearguard”. The effectiveness of this body in the fight against terror has crossed borders, and has recently been recognised with the maximum award - the Legion of Honour. He also spoke of the “determination and perseverance” of the Guardia Civi, which has enabled the tragic death of the young Eva Blanco to be cleared up 18 years on. “Once again, you have been key to justice prevailing,” he said proudly.
This is the latest step towards a badly-need-
Our disabled jobs’ scandal IT’S a shocking truth, but new research suggests that over the last decade, there has been no progress in the lives of disabled people seeking work. Despite assurances from those in charge of Social Policy in the Canary Islands Government that plans were in place, it is still very difficult for the disadvantaged to get work. That’s what emerged from the meeting held on Tuesday by the representatives of the “Tenerife Disability” pressure group and Fernando Clavijo, VicePresident and Industry Minister. Patricia Hernandez, Regional Government President, was also in attendance. At the meeting, described as “more cordial than those maintained by former officials of the Ministry”, it revealed the “impossibility” of creating new places for disabled in the Islands next year. As it stands, just 5,000 of the 160,000 people registered as being disabled have a job. And
that has been the same since 2006. There is the “will to help” from the Canarian Government to redefine and expand the portfolio of services this sector can do. And 2.1m euros will be invested in the next financial year on new ideas. Tenerife Disability spokesman Raul Cordero said: “Since 2004 there has been no real help, and we are not even getting close to the average employment figure for all the other regions.” And he confirmed that the new Enabling Act required minimum targets which, currently, were “impossible to meet”. Cordero, whose organisation represents more than 50 associations throughout the Santa Cruz de Tenerife province, added: “We understand that money is tight, but we need more funding to try to help those who are looking. “The Treasury has admitted there will be no increase at the moment as the current budgets have all been agreed.”
South Airport set for 120m-euro overhaul
A new Boardwalk Empire for El Medano
GRANADILLA de Abona Council has announced a competition, or a period for ideas to be submitted, for the remodelling of the promenade Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes de Roja, in El Medano, popularly known as the board-walk.
13th November - 19th November 2015
ed modernisation of the area. Recently, Councillor Arquipo Jose Quintero, requested “the repair or total remodelling” of the area, especially for people with wheelchairs and pushchairs. The walk, one of the most emblematic of this coastal village, was built 23 years ago and is now in a poor state. Over the years, the wood has been poorly preserved, and some of the structures pillars are rotten, while others to not appear sturdy. From an architectural
point of view, a motion debated by the Council said: “It’s one of the charms of the town, an area of urban façade that is a meeting point and leisure for the population, in addition to road access to the sea. It should be a local jewel.” Mayor Jaime González Cejas, said: “After 23 years, the board-walk has been left to drift. Currently, it has a number of shortcomings and could even pose a security problem.” He added: “The importance of the place
deserves a grand contest of ideas, and I would support linking it to some milestone.” González Cejas confirmed the existence of a large-sized municipal budget for the 2016 scheme, saying: “We want to make the ‘contest’ as quickly as possible.” He has also sent a clear message to the Canary Islands Government “to take a chance and help the project with financing”. The Town Hall forecasts the cost could reach 1.2 million euros.
ANA Pastor, the Spanish Government’s Development Minister, has announced plans to invest 120 million euros in the coming years towards Aena’s South Tenerife Airport refurbishment. Details of the project have not been made public, since the money has yet to be signed off by Parliament. But Pastor revealed that a new terminal will be constructed as part of general building improvements. It is a major coup for the local government. Over a year ago Tenerife Cabildo, together with the Island’s business and hotel industry leaders, called for investment at the airport. The Insular Government made various reports to support this request. The last of them commissioned an external consultation reflecting the minimum investment required at the airport to meet the necessary standards. This report suggested
93 million euros, so the 120m-euro overhaul budget is a real shot in arm. The report noted: “It has been found that the levels of service in the security, and boarding areas, boarding gates and passport control are not acceptable, according to the methodology defined by IATA (International Air Transport Association). “Similarly, the arrivals hall will be insufficient from 2018 as passenger numbers continue to grow.” It is understood that the project will provide a remodelled T2 terminal, which will be converted into a full-service operation during 2016 and 2017. There should also be a complete expansion programme for T2, including the building of another wing to complement the existing module. This could be operational in 2023, so construction should start by 2020.

Government is moving towards head-on clash C A T A L O N I A’ S regional parliament has defied the Spanish Government by approving a plan to set up a road-map for independence from the country within two years.
Its pro-independence parties had a majority in the regional assembly for the first time in the September elections. And they have voted in favour of a resolution calling on the assembly to start working on legislation within 30 days to create a separate social security system and treasury, with a view to securing complete independence as early as 2017. The “Together for Yes” coalition of Catalan President Artur Mas, and the smaller, far-left separatist CUP party, together hold 72 of the assembly’s 135 seats. The motion was passed by 72 votes to 63. The conservative Spanish Government had vowed to ask the constitutional court to declare the resolution void if it were passed. Now, if the court accepts the Government’s appeal - as is expected - the Catalan resolution will be suspended until judges hear arguments and make their decision. Spanish Premier Mariano Rajoy, who is preparing for a general election on 20th December, has the backing of
the main opposition Socialists and new centreright party Ciudadanos. Of Spain’s main parties at national level, only the far-left Podemos has resisted Rajoy’s effort to forge a united front on the issue. But while Podemos wants Catalonia to stay within Spain, it has also said it will support a referendum on the matter. The Catalan resolution states that the secession process will not be subject to decisions made by Spanish institutions, including the constitutional court. “The content of the resolution will be applied, regardless of what the constitutional court says,” said Pere Aragones, an assembly member with ‘Together for Yes’.We have strength and legitimacy, even if the Spanish states resist.” In September, Rajoy’s Government boosted the powers of the constitutional court to allow it, quickly, to suspend
leaders who disobey its orders - a move aimed directly at Catalonia. The Government has also raised the possibility of invoking article 155 of the Spanish constitution, which allows Madrid to supersede the authority of a regional government acting outside the law, or to cut off its funding. There have long been demands for greater autonomy in Catalonia, a region of 7.5 million people with its own language that accounts for a fifth of Spain’s economic output. These calls have intensified in recent years, at a time of economic crisis in Spain. A 2010 decision by Spain’s constitutional court, to water-down a 2006 statute giving the region more powers, has added to the growing pressure for secession. Catalonia tried to hold an official referendum on independence in 2014, but central government’s argument
that all Spanish people have the right to decide on matters of sovereignty. However, in November last year, Catalonia defied Madrid and pressed ahead with the referendum, although it was purely symbolic. Turn-out was just 37%, of which, more than 80% voted in favour of independence.
The CUP assembly member, Albert Botran, said: “A referendum would be the ideal tool, but the Spanish government blocked it. We have no other option but unilateral action.” Although Catalan separatist parties won a majority of seats in the September elections, they failed to win a majority of all votes cast
- a fact emphasised by their opponents. Albert Rivera, national leader of Ciudadanos, the main opposition party in Catalonia, didn’t mince his words, saying: “Everything is unconstitutional, illegal and undemocratic because they lie when they say the majority of Catalans back a decoupling.”

Our winter sun a big hit with Northerners DECEMBER holiday bookings to the Canary Islands have risen sharply, with the biggest volume of travellers by far coming from the North of England.
That’s the findings of UK travel retailer Holiday Hypermarket, which discovered that 73% of travellers from England were from the North. Meanwhile, it held a little less appeal for the Midlands, with only 21% deciding to go on holiday to the Canaries before the New Year. This is still more than the South, though, with just 17% choosing to travel during the month. But overall, bookings were up 72% year on year. This news follows on from a recent
study, carried out by Spanish tourist body, Exceltur, which revealed that this summer has been the best for Spain’s tourist industry for a decade. Ian Crawford, holidayhypermarket.co.uk representative, said: “We expected a lot of activity around Spain this year as many people are choosing to stay closer to home for their holidays. The Canaries has always been one of our most popular destinations, but it’s quite surprising how many bookings there have been already this year for the winter, especially from the North. “Aside from London, which accounts for about 20%, our customers are usually spread pretty evenly over England. It’s definitely unusual to see such a big regional difference.”
Canarian wages are nearly rock-bottom THE Canary Islands’ salaries are the second lowest in Spain, according to new official data, gleaned from 14 million people!
Here, the average gross monthly pay was 1,621.60 euros in 2014, which was below the national average. That stood at 1,881.30 euros, said the National Statistics Institute (INE) data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS). In the whole country, 30% of Spaniards earned under 1,221.10 euros gross per month in 2014, while 40%
earned between 1,221.10 and 2,173.50 euros. The remaining 30% earned more than that. To produce these statistics, the INE looked at the earnings of over 14 million people during the last year. This showed the average monthly wage was 19.7% higher than in 2006, when it stood at 1,338.40 euros. According to the INE, women, young people, people with a low level of training, workers with less seniority in the business and temporary hired help, have the lowest wages. In the case of women, their average salary stood 31.3% lower than the average male.
More bus problems P R E S S U R E group ‘Platform of People Affected by the changes in the South Titsa’ (PACTS) has reiterated its concerns about the bus network.
This week, officials said there was still “an apparent lack of ac-
tion by the company to meet the proposals of the South network improvement”, adding “We do not perceive any intentions to change in the short or long-term.” This strong claim came after a recent meeting between PACTS, local and regional councillors and transport advisers. Last month, TITSA said it would be making changes to the recently-
altered timetable, which has sparked fierce criticism. But PACTS say nothing has happened. “The reality is that there is still chaos and a lot of users are affected, said a spokesperson. “Therefore, we will continue to fight - and this time, from each municipality.” The agreement with Tenerife Cabildo oblig-
es TITSA to complete the “Timetable adjustments” before the end of this year, taking into special account collective demands and needs of the elderly and disabled. PACTS also wants to see a “service which ensures that students have a real system, so they can attend their schools throughout the South properly”.
Airline bans boozy Scot A SCOTTISH woman, who caused a disturbance during a holiday flight to Tenerife after too much booze, has been banned from flying with Jet2 airline.
Paisley Sheriff Court heard that Joanna Felvus argued noisily with her male companion during the 9th July trip from Glasgow.
The 25-year-old from Lanarkshire admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause fear and alarm to others by shouting, swearing and acting aggressively. Despite the presence of young children nearby, Felvus was twice warned about her conduct by airline staff as she ripped into her partner, turning the air blue. Cabin crew separated the couple as the plane prepared to land. Felvus was asked to hand her passport over
to flight attendants and was, subsequently, told she would not be allowed to fly back to Scotland with the same airline. She was also informed that she would no longer be welcome aboard any Jet2 flights. She and her partner had to pay for a return flight with another airline “at significant cost”, said Tony Callahan, defending. The court was told that when quizzed by police, Felvus, a cleaner, told them: “I had too
much to drink - that’s the reason this happened.” Mr Callahan said that his client, a first offender, was deeply embarrassed by what had happened and regretted her conduct. “This episode has had a very sobering effect on her,” he added. Sheriff Robert Fife, fining her £300, said: “Behaviour such as this is completely and utterly unacceptable. You are right to feel deeply embarrassed - no wonder you do!”

Can you take A CHILD OVERSEAS AFTER DIVORCE?
The editor says...
Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
A SHINING EXAMPLE IF you are on holiday, I’m sure you are having a brilliant time. And is it me, or is everyone on holiday in Tenerife right now? The Island is full to bursting. The amazing weather of the last fortnight has helped, of course. In the sunshine business, the big yellow thing in the sky and rising mercury is king! It really is perfect just now. As we speculated last week, the problems in Egypt have led to a tourism surge. But the truth is, Tenerife was breaking arrival records anyway. And the third factor is the exchange rate which, as Carol mentions on page 20, is favourable for those coming here. If you hear anyone complaining that the Island is quiet, please correct them swiftly. Ask them to try to find a flight or book a hotel room. Ditto for Christmas. I have a few people coming over in January and February, and they have been scrambling around this week to get booked. Prices seem to rise for flights and rooms on an
hourly basis. Over the last fortnight I’ve had my Mother and Fatherin-Law over for their annual visit. Of course, it’s great to see them and spend time with them. It also means that I get a chance to do “touristy” things and, also, because they are seasoned visitors, I get a feel from them as to what has changed here. Every year, it seems we make progress. But this time it seems the “Olds” were even more impressed than usual. A lot of people have put in a lot of hard work to improve this Island and, while some decisions have been controversial, most of the improvements have been just that. And if that statement is wrong, then why are we so busy? Finally this week, I’d like to wish Graeme and Mark the best of luck in their new ownership of the Palms Bar, in Torviscas. And a big thank you to Justin and all the crew on the Mustcat for looking after the “folks”. They’ve not stopped talking about it all week!

Following separation or divorce of residents in Spain, there is significant potential for conflict when one of the parents’ wishes to take a child to live with them overseas, for example back to the UK. This matter must be managed with great care in order to avoid committing a criminal act. If a parent plans to move to live with the children in another country, be aware that this requires the agreement and consent of the other parent. This permission must be obtained unequivocally and ideally in writing, to avoid conflict should the other party change their mind. In cases where it is not possible to obtain the other parent’s consent amicably, then the permission must sought in Court. OBTAINING CONSENT In short, a parent needs the permission of the other parent or a Court Order to take a child permanently abroad. To maximise the chances of success with the Court granting custody and permission to take the child overseas, the case must be professionally prepared. It is important to establish a system for visitation, so that the other parent can have access to the child for a length of time that reflects the geographical distance between them. If the dispute is not legally settled in Court, then taking the child overseas without consent and a Court order, without establishing regular visitation rights for the other parent, is a criminal act, considered child abduction or kidnapping. CHILD KIDNAPPING If the child is taken abroad without consent, the other party can commence legal proceedings requesting the return of
the child under the Hague Convention of October 25, 1980 on Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. Under this law, it is likely that you and your child will be forced to return to Spain, and a formal application must be made for custody of the child and a decision upon place of residence. During this legal conflict both parents and the child must stay in Spain. When considering an application for a Court order, or to challenge a Court order, the most important consideration is the welfare of the child: their new home life, education, visitation access and regular access to both parents as these will be the issues that the Court will take into account. PROFESSIONAL ADVICE Therefore it is highly recommended to seek permission and address any potential conflict before leaving Spain with the child. Reaching an agreement may cause a delay in departure, but will in the long term lead to a much more stable and amicable solution.

It’s Gizmos time again STUDENTS and their families from Adeje’s infant and primary public schools are invited to participate in the fifth annual Gadgets/ Gizmos competition.
The event is organised by Adeje Council’s Department of Creative Development, and this year’s theme is Vive San Andrés. This is the fiesta where
chestnuts are eaten, new wines are tasted and kids play on gokarts and create noises by dragging tins around on string. Entries can be submitted between 16-26th November, and exhibits from the winners and runners-up will form part of an exhibition in Adeje Cultural Centre. Councillor Alonso Ferrera said: “The department of creative development, sport and learning is always eager to support initiatives
that promote development in the education sector. “Following on the success of this competition in previous years, we are delighted to continue with it because it helps students realise their potential as individuals, and with their families, in the making of these recycled models.” The rules, published in Adeje Council’s webpages in Spanish and English, outlines that each entry can be made with family members and must use recycled
materials (primary material should, where possible, be tins/cans, and any other materials must also fall into the recycling category), with San Andrés
as the theme. Prizes, comprising of vouchers for school-books and materials, are 40 euros for winner, 25 euros for second and 15 euros for third, plus runners-up
certificates for other entrants. For more details, phone 922 756 200 (Ext. 4412) or contact adejecomunica@ gmail.com
Four women killed after protest against violence FOUR women have been killed since last Saturday, when an anti-violence demonstration was staged by tens of thousands of people marching through Madrid.
The same night, a 51-year-old man killed his wife before committing suicide in the south-western town of Baena. And on Sunday, police arrested a man in the eastern town of Lliria for a double killing, when he shot his exwife and former mother-in-law in public. He had been subjected to a restraining order, said the Mayor. Then, late on Monday, police in the northern city of Oviedo detained
a 51-year-old man on suspicion of killing his wife, 65. Her body was discovered by a neighbour, along with a letter from her husband saying he had killed her The tragedies bring to 45 the number of women killed by their partners or ex-partners on the mainland this year. Meanwhile, on Saturday, marching protesters answered a call by more than 400 feminist groups to flood down-town Madrid, carrying banners that read “Stop ‘machista’ violence” and shouting, “We aren’t all here, the dead are missing!” In a Twitter statement, Health Minister Alfonso Alonso criticised the latest violence, saying it had been a “black weekend” for Spain. And Carmen Benito, head of Women Against Mistreatment, said she
was “outraged” by the deaths. She told news agency AFP: “Measures are needed so this does not happen any more.” One in every eight females in Spain, aged 16 and over, has experienced violence at the hands of her partner or ex, according to last year’s Health Ministry report. Spain is viewed as a pioneer in Europe of legislation to combat violence against women. A 2004 law introduced an emergency phone number that doesn’t appear on telephone bills, as well as free legal assistance and accommodation for abused women. The number of women killed in Spain by their partners or ex-partners dropped from 71 in 2003, the year before the law was adopted, to 54 last year.
Canarian crime down – slightly! CRIMES and misdemeanours in the Canary Islands have decreased slightly this year, official figures showing a tiny 0.3% drop between January and September, compared with the same 2014 period.
The data, compiled up by National Police Corps and Guardia Civil, were provided by the Interior Ministry. Throughout the archipelago, homicides and manslaughters have increased by 33% com-
pared with the first nine months of last year, going from nine to 12 cases. Robbery with violence and intimidation in the current year is down almost 9%, from 1,236 to 1,129, and burglary is also lowered, falling by nearly 10% in all the islands, from 2,762 to 2,493. Car theft has also decreased by almost 10%, while drug-trafficking crimes have gone up 11%. In the Western Isles, robbery with violence and intimidation have increased more than 13.4%, from 508 to 576. And household robberies are down nearly 17%, from 1,694 to 1,410. Car thefts have reduced by 11.5%. Closer to home, crimes and offences in Arona went up 6% in the first nine months of 2015.

Triple ‘space junk’ riddle A CURIOUS object found recently in the Spanish countryside was thought to be a UFO, or alien related. But it was actually deemed “space junk”. It was probably part of a rocket or satellite which had re-entered Earth’s atmosphere, landing in the field. But the puzzle deepened when another, similar object, was discovered close by. The Inquisitr magazine reported on how two shepherds, brothers Francisco and Juan Espín del Amo, came across the mysterious object while herding their goats. Spain’s Guardia Civil were called to the scene, and immediately activated their NRBQ protocol (used to investigate nuclear, radiological, bacterial, or chemical threats). An expert in a safety
suit examined the object and proclaimed it safe, so it was taken away for further investigation. The object, initially rumoured to be a UFO or of alien origin, was eventually thought to be an auxiliary fuel tank from a rocket which, somehow, found its way back to Earth. Other theories were raised that it could be a composite, overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV), because they are composed of a material so resistant that they can survive re-entry into the atmosphere without burning up. Similar items had, apparently, turned up in Brazil and Australia. But, as reported in Sunday’s El Pais newspaper, another similar lump was discovered in the Murcia countryside, a few kilometres from the first find.
Why boys just love to play with girls’ toys! A SPANISH company, which has pushed back the gender barrier, has produced a catalogue showing boys playing with toys traditionally deemed for girls, and vice-versa, after positive feedback from parents.
Toy Planet, with some 200 stores across Spain, has pictured boys pushing a pram, knitting and cuddling a baby doll in a bid to break down gender stereotypes. And little girls are featured playing with pretend power tools, remote-control dinosaurs, and waving light-sabres. The company acted after posting images of gender-neutral toys on its social media sites. It received so much positive feedback that a decision was taken to ensure its catalogue featured similar, non-stereotypical images. After taking the stance last year, the company’s general director, Ignacio Gaspar, told Spanish newspaper El Pais that
widespread approval had not necessarily been followed by other companies. “This is still an unresolved matter in the industry,” he said. “They’ve congratulated us a lot, but the support has been more about
attitude than about behaviour, and it’s still hard going. “If communication is not encouraged, it’s hard for someone to take the helm with the changes. Who does it? The families? The companies? It’s like a dog chasing its
tail.” British campaigners ‘Let Toys Be Toys’, a group of volunteers consisting mainly of parents, have campaigned for labels to be removed from children’s toys since Christmas 2012. But they believe stores won’t stop gender-stereotyping while there are profits to be made. Spokeswoman Tricia Lowther, said: “Toys are just toys, and parents know that, if given the opportunity, lots of boys will play with pushchairs and girls will play with tool sets. “Pink and blue versions of the same toy are unlikely to be shared between siblings of different genders, so it can mean more sales. Big stores are slow to change their marketing without an incentive.” She stressed that the idea of children being forced to play with a certain type of toy was ridiculous, adding: “We don’t think there is such a thing as gender-neutral toys. “It’s the way toys are marketed that sends out strong messages about who is supposed to play with them. But children tend to play with whatever they are given.”
It was also spherical and almost identical to the first object found by the shepherds. It was said to be about one metre in diameter and covered in heat-resistant material. Officials deployed a crew of bomb experts to examine it, and the surrounding area. It is now stored at Murcia’s Guardia Civil headquarters awaiting more expert examination. According to science magazine Ciencia Plus, this mysterious item has caused some concern among local residents. And plenty of speculation is circulating in the Spanish and international media about the discoveries. José Vélez, Mayor of Calasparra, Murcia, is concerned about the “lack of information” offered by the Government delega-
tion involved in the investigations. “We deserve a full explanation of the incident,” he said. Following the second object, officials in the municipality are concerned that several others could have fallen, especially as Radio Calasparra allegedly reported that, on Tuesday, 3rd November, seven to eight balls of fire had been seen falling in the early hours of the morning. And on Wednesday a third mysterious object was found. This time, the space debris appeared in a field near the town of Elda, in the Alicante province. It is a narrow strip of metal, 4m long and about 20cm wide. It is burnt and has sharp, cutting edges. Investigators believe it was once a part of a satellite or maybe a rocket.
Thieves’ wars with stores
SPAIN lies third in Europe behind the Netherlands and Finland for the percentage of store sales lost to theft. And, worldwide, it ranks sixth-highest, according to a new report.
It was conducted jointly by analysts from research firm The Smart Cube and retail services company Checkpoint Systems. Researchers conducted interviews with more than 200 retailers across 24 worldwide countries, and the average rate of “shrink” worldwide losses through shoplifting, fraud or administrative errors - was 1.23%. Mexico topped the charts worldwide, at 1.68%, while Norway (0.75%) had the lowest rate among the countries surveyed. In Spain, the cost of
retail crime and its prevention amounts to about 2.21% of store overheads, or about 4.14bn euros across the country, which is the equivalent of 238 euros per Spanish family. Yet thefts have declined in Spain in recent years, the Interior Ministry reporting a 5.16% drop between 2013 and 2014. The theft barometer also showed that the percentage of revenue lost to theft decreased this year, down from 1.36% in 2014. The biggest cause of loss was shoplifting (52%), and administrative errors (25%) accounted for the second-greatest cause, followed by employee theft (18%). Fraud by suppliers accounted for 5%. Clothing items stolen most were shoes, lingerie, sunglasses and handbags, while smartphones were among the electronic items most stolen.

EasyJet boss: ‘Security has to be much tighter’
EASYJET Chief Executive Carolyn McCall, in the wake of the latest air tragedy, is insistent that security should be tightened around the world’s airports.
In her first interview since the probable terror attack on the Russian plane, which blew apart in mid-air over Egypt, Ms McCall told the BBC on Tuesday that the idea of bombs on board “kept airline chief executives awake at night”. She would not name the airports, but said it was a global issue. And she has spent five days
battling to fly home stranded tourists, who, she said, “should all be back by the weekend”. Ms McCall was adamant that, following the 224 deaths on Russian flight 9268 from Sharm el-Sheikh, it was time for a fundamental rethink. “I think that in some airports, security is very tight and very strict,” she said. “British airports do security very well, but Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond is right to point out that there are other countries that airlines fly to where it, perhaps, needs to be tightened.” When asked whether Harm el-Sheikh airport
fell into that category following criticism, the easyJet chief said: “The government has come out quite clearly and said that Harm will have to tighten airport security. “Everybody would agree with that. It’s not a blanket message, but a very specific message about certain airports around the world. This will be a global , and not just an Egyptian thing or a North African thing. “And passengers will be happy about that. I think airlines will support that, because no one wants a security threat.”
After days of criticisms that easyJet had left some passengers confused and, to be fair, also received much praise about the way the airline has dealt with the issue, putting up passengers in hotels as regulations oblige them to do, Ms McCall said: “Our message is that we will look after our passengers, as we are doing. “They will be comfortable; they will be in hotels, and all their reasonable expenses will be paid. We had about 4,500 passengers in Sharm last Wednesday, which is when this
Two-wheel challenge THE latest round of the annual LigaCaja Canarias Children’s Cycling League contest takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at Avenida Las Palm-

The categories include Beginners, Juveniles and Olders (between 7 and 14) and are divided into two classifications. Santa Ursula Ben-
tor Cycling Club expects over 30 entrants and the event starts at 10.30am at Avenida Las Palmeras, with the later rounds on 5th and 12th December.
kicked off. By the end of the weekend, we would hope to have brought back all the delayed passengers.” Ms McCall apologised to passengers for the frustrations, pointing out that the issue of how many flights they could operate out of Sharm was a matter for the Egyptian authorities. “We know it’s frustrating and we apologise for it, even though this is not caused by easyJet,” she said. “Of course we are empathetic - we know this is not easy.” The confusion was not helped last week when easyJet said, initially, that eight flights would be returning on Friday, then, subsequently, cut the number to two. But she said the number was initially agreed by the Egyptian authorities, and then rescinded. There were mutterings in Whitehall that easyJet had jumped the gun on the “eight flights” announcement, But Ms McCall, defending her company’s actions, said: “The reason we said we had eight flights going out is because we had permission to get eight flights out. “And the reason that didn’t happen is because that permission was rescinded, so the flights we thought we were getting out could not go out. But that was just about everything being very fluid.” There have been complaints that Russian
passengers have had far more luck getting out of Sharm than the Brits. And one easyJet representative reportedly told passengers in Egypt that the plethora of Russian planes departing was delaying UK flights. “I don’t know, is the honest answer,” said Ms McCall in response. “The whole situation is frustrating for everybody because the aim is: you want to get your passengers back as quickly as you can. “It’s up to the Egyptians what they do - and all we can do is try to influence and try to work with them and with our own government to make sure we get our passengers back.” By coincidence, Tuesday was the 20th anniversary of easyJet’s first flight, from Luton to Glasgow, which marked at the airline’s Luton headquarters. The Egypt crisis obviously tempered those celebrations, but Ms McCall, when asked what the success of lowcost flying was down to, replied: “It’s very quick, it’s very easy, it’s very efficient and it’s no big deal any more. “You can get to so many parts of Europe and, indeed, many other places, without much fuss and hassle. We do it at very low fares, with very good service, and our crew are fantastic. “They smile, and they put the customers at the centre of their thinking. You put it all together and that’s why the company is so successful.”

Royal cars in auction flop THE Spanish Government has failed to auction off two Ferraris given as gifts to former King Juan Carlos because they held little appeal to the public. A single bid came in, which was for less than half the 350,000-euro and 345,000 reserve price respectively for the FF four-seaters. The motors were presented to Juan Carlos by the United Arab Emirates in 2011 and have hardly been used. In fact, there’s little more more than the delivery mileage showing on the clocks. The then King donated the cars - one black and the other silver-grey - to the state in 2012, and the Finance Ministry decided to auction them to help fill its coffers a little.
Both were presents from UAE Prime Minister Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, following a visit by the Spanish monarch to watch the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November 2011. The Finance Ministry opened the bidding in mid-October with a five-day period to allow those interested to inspect the vehicles, before the 30th October deadline. The Government wanted 350,000 euros for the black Ferrari and 5,000 less for the silver-grey one, which “has a slight scratch mark on the left front side and rear side,” as well as a “slight dent on the back wheel,” according to an appraisal. The vehicle also shows 763km the clock. The appraisal also
stated that the Ferraris were equipped with a silver, dedication plaque, 20-inch diamond-finished sports wheel rims, interior leather rugs, a back-seat entertainment centre, including a high-watt stereo sound-system,TV station receiver, and exterior cameras for parking. Last December, Juan Carlos’ successor, his son King Felipe VI, instructed the Spanish royal family not to accept any more favours or expensive gifts “that could jeopardise the dignity of their institutional tasks”. It was part of Felipe’s campaign to clean up the royal household’s image following months of low popularity ratings, thanks, mainly, to his father!
First refugees Are in Madrid THE first refugee group to be accepted officially by Spain as part of a European deal to relocate 160,000 asylum seekers have landed. They arrived at Madrid airport on Sunday night and the 12 individuals, 11 from Eritrea and another from Syria, were the first people from an initial contingent of 50 refugees whom Spain has agreed to take in. Seven more Eritreans, given the go-ahead for travel to Spain, refused to board the flight, and demanded to be flown to Germany instead. The flight landed at 9.30pm at Adolfo SuárezMadrid Barajas airport, where the refugees were greeted by Francisco Martínez, Spain’s Security Secretary, and Marina del Corral, General Secretary for Migration Issues. Hours earlier, Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz made a statement in Barcelona, insisting the Government’s goal was not just to accept refugees. Its task he said, was also to ensure they became an integrated part of society by offering them “all kinds of atten-
tion: healthcare, education, training for the job market...” With this move, Spain becomes one of the first five European countries to begin the relocation process, agreed by the European Union earlier this year. In early September, the Spanish Government announced that it would accept the near15,000 refugees allocated by the European Commission. And the Government is planning to resettle 854 asylum-seekers before the end of the year. The Interior Ministry, in a release on Sunday evening, said non-profit groups would take charge of the newcomers and help cover their basic needs. Although Sunday’s migrants are the first contingent from the official quota of refugees accepted by Spain, there was a precedent in midSeptember when a Syrian family arrived in Madrid after making global headlines. Son Osama Abdul Mohsen, a Syrian refugee, became famous after being tripped up deliberately by a Hungar-
ian TV camera operator on 8th September. He was sponsored by Spain’s National Soccer Coach Training Centre and brought to the Madrid suburb of Getafe with two of his sons. Three Eritreans will move to the Basque Country, where the regional government has expressed a willingness to accept around 1,000 refugees fleeing war zones. “All agencies have made an effort, without turning this into a political issue, but thinking simply about the people,” said José Luis Madrazo, the Basque executive’s chief of family policies. But he was surprised at how slow things were moving, saying: “It’s odd that only three people can come.” But this slowness has been a trait of all resettlement efforts in Europe. By early November, just 86 migrants had travelled from Italy to Sweden and Finland. The rest remain caught up in bureaucratic red tape. In theory, all 160,000 refugees should be in their new homes within the next two years.

Dementia is no laughing matter AN early-warning sign of impending dementia could actually be a person’s increasingly-warped sense of humour.
A University College London study involved patients with frontotemporal dementia, and the results appeared in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Questionnaires from friends and family of the 48 patients showed that many had noticed a change in humour years before dementia had been diagnosed, which included laughing inappropriately at tragic events. Experts say more studies are now needed to understand how and when changes in humour could
act as a red flag for dementia. There are many different types of dementia, and frontotemporal dementia is one of the rarer ones. The area of the brain affected involves personality and behaviour, and people who develop this form of dementia can lose their inhibitions, become more impulsive and struggle with social situations. Dr Camilla Clark and colleagues recruited the patients from their University College London dementia clinic. And they asked the patients’ friends or relatives to rate their beloved’s liking for various kinds of comedy: slapstick comedy such as Mr Bean, satirical comedy such as Yes, Minister or absurdist comedy such as Mon-
ty Python - as well as any examples of inappropriate humour. Nearly all of the respondents said, with hindsight, that they had noticed a shift in the nine years before the dementia was diagnosed. Many patients had developed a dark sense of humour - for example, laughing at tragic
events in the news, or in their personal lives. The dementia patients also tended to prefer slapstick to satirical humour, when compared with 21 healthy people of a similar age. Dr Clark said: “These were marked changes completely inappropriate humour well beyond the realms of even dis-
tasteful humour. For example, one man laughed when his wife scalded herself badly.” Lee Pearce, from Sheffield, was not involved in the study, but he can relate to the findings. He first noticed a change in his mum’s behaviour when she was 55. But it was four years before she received the correct diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. “She’d always been very loving and familyfocused, but she became increasingly uninvolved and emotionless,” said Lee. “As she had a history of depression, we put it down to that, and her doctor agreed. But Mum’s behaviour became more and more erratic, and we began to question the diagnosis. “She’d forget family
birthdays, laugh if someone had an accident or she heard someone was unwell, and she was even sacked from her job - all completely out of character.” Dr Simon Ridley, of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said people concerned about behavioural changes in their loved ones should speak to their GP. “While memory loss is often the first thing that springs to mind when we hear the word dementia, this study highlights the importance of looking at the myriad of symptoms that impact on daily life and relationships,” he said. “A deeper understanding of the full range of dementia symptoms will increase our ability to make a timely and accurate diagnosis.”

Canarian-made films such a splash-hit now RICARDO Martinez, Tenerife Film Commission Director, told this week’s MiradasDoc International Documentary Film Festival, in Guia de Isora, that the islands were making a real splash in the international film industry.
He also said the Canaries’ six existing film committees were beginning to undertake joint actions to promote the islands abroad as prime locations for shooting films, both in fairs, presentations and audio-visual festivals. Martinez was speaking in front of some highranking film-commission representatives, including Yurena Men-

insular autonomy, they were seeking to be offered as a single product to the national and international market, as is done in other industrial sectors of the Canary Is-
lands, such as tourism. Martinez added: “The archipelago as a whole offers the same advantages - a mild climate throughout the year, up to 3,000 hours of sunlight a year, a huge variety of natural and urban landscapes, and specific fiscal conditions that make it attractive to come to roll in the Canaries.” Among the audience was Juan Cano Trujillo, the “South Canarian Film” producer. This company has been extremely active
in America and was involved with large-scale projects such as Clash of the Titans and the recent shooting of the next instalment in the Bourne saga in Santa Cruz. Cano Trujillo, (pictured) who spoke briefly, encouraged the Canary Islands companies to work together in audio-visual world. He noted on the Bourne set that “93% of the crew contracted by our company ‘South Canarian Film’, were Canarian”. All participants in the
Another earthquake! THE municipality of La Oliva, in the north of Fuerteventura, experienced a minor earthquake this week. On Tuesday morning an earthquake, measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale, was felt by many on the island, according to the National Geographic Institute.
The movement occurred at 11.38am and was recorded at a depth of 24km. There were no injuries or serious damage. The Canary Islands often experience minor earth tremors, although recent quakes have been on the eastern islands of El Hierro and La Gomera.
FREE parking or charges in the city? That’s this week’s political hot potato, and Tenerife Mobility Minister Manuel Ortega admits: “It is a very controversial issue.” A new proposal to try to relieve traffic on the Island suggested an end to all free parking in city centres and major destinations, including hospitals, which would have a major impact on the metropolitan area. Last month, La Laguna Councillor Melchor Nuñez suggested the problem was at crisis point and put up some hard-love ideas he called, “the regulation of parking on arrival”. He said, specifically, that the public parking system should no longer be free or, at least incorporate a time limit, which would lead to a fine if the period elapsed. It is an Island-wide problem, and the situation is as bad in the South as it is in Santa Cruz. In Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, the island’s Cabildo recently adopted a newly-regulated car park network called “Blue Zone” and “Green Zone”. The Blue Zone has a pay-per-minute system, while the Green Zone offers permit-only parking, sold cut -price to local residents. Ortega, aware of the Gran Canaria scheme, says it is being monitored. Recently, Tenerife Cabildo stated that 60% of cars circulating during the Santa Cruz rushhour are looking for parking spaces.

Speed is still the problem By n332.es
RESULTS of the latest campaign for monitoring secondary roads in Spain reveal that he top three traffic violations are: excessive speed, not using seat-belts or child restraints and a lack of maintenance.
The campaign, from 19th to 25th October, saw more than half-amillion vehicles checked and 27,370 drivers reported, equating to 5.15% of the total. Of the drivers sanctioned, 39% were reported for breaking the speed limit, with 13% exceeding the limit by 20km/h. In all, 16,564 drivers were reported for speeding. The second mostcommon report was for non-use of seat-belts.
In one week alone, 1,349 people were caught not wearing one. And those responsible for children’s welfare in their vehicles were reported for carrying 81 kids without the appropriate child-restraint system. Also, 57 people were nabbed for not wearing a crash helmet on a motorbike or scooter, increasing their risk of making up the three out of four bikers who die from head injuries following crashes. Bearing in mind that wearing any kind of device in your ear is illegal in Spain, including headphones and handsfree mobile devices, 1,113 drivers were sanctioned for the distrac-
tions they might have caused. Plus, 1,196 drivers tested positive in alcohol and drug tests, 308 were reported for dangerous overtaking and 292 failed to stop or give way at a junction. As for vehicle-maintenance standards, 1,324 motorists were reported for driving vehicles with technical defects and another 67 for major faults, resulting in their vehicles being immobilised by traffic police. Finally, 1,447 drivers were reported for not having the correct documentation relating to the vehicle; in most cases, not having a current ITV, and another 750 were reported for driver-documentation errors.
Chewing-gum wall unstuck!
SEATTLE’S famed “gum wall”, where tourists and residents have stuck their used chewing gum for the past 20 years, has been given a thorough clean-up.
The US city was proud of its incredible feature, covered in some one million wads of gum in many colours, some
stretched to make elaborate messages and designs. Pictures, business cards and other mementos were also attached to the estimated 1,000kg of gum stuck on the wall. But authorities have used powerful steam-cleaners to uncover the Pike Place Market wall. Market spokeswoman Emily Crawford said it had been in urgent need of a clean, despite the its popularity.
And Zoe Freeman, who works near Pike Place, said: “The market is famous for the gum wall. It also drew rats, but it was an icon and it’s part of our history.” People began sticking their chewed gum on the wall while waiting for shows at the nearby Market Theatre two decades ago. It later spread beyond the wall, on nearby pipes - and even on to the theatre’s box-office window.

2016 budget freeze angers universities THE draft Budget for the Autonomous Community has ensured a price freeze for 2016, which has angered the two university heads.
Each centre will have about one million euros to upgrade staff salaries, but this is just in line with inflation and there is no extra cash for the respective infrastructures. Antonio Martinon, University of Las Palmas Rector, and Antonio Martinon, from the University of Las Palmas, this week met Canary President Fernando Clavijo, Education Minister Soledad
Monzón, Economy Minister Pedro Ortego and Ciro Rodriguez, General Director of Universities. But they left frustrated. “The government has told us the money is what it is,” said Martinon. “There is no possibility of increasing it - and they are also dissatisfied!” He added: “Obviously, we are all not satisfied, it seems.” However, there could be some light at the end of the tunnel. The new funding framework for the two Canarian universities will be decided in the second quarter of the year and, post-election, there are hopes of extra money for 2017, said an optimistic Rodriguez.

Workers’ long slog to work, and back
MORE and more people are spending more than two hours a day commuting to and from work. The figure has risen by a huge 72% in the last decade and a Trade Union Congress (TUC) report said that more than three million UK employees now faced lengthy journeys. It said the increase was down to people being “priced out” of living in areas near their work-places. But the UK Government said investment in help to buy schemes, house-building and infrastructure was helping to rectify this. Nearly 83,000 employees were interviewed as part of the research. The largest increase in long commutes was in the South-East, South-West and EastMidlands of England, and in Wales. The results also suggest that women are affected most by the
increase in long commutes, with a 131% rise in women travelling three hours or more. The study drew on data collected by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) from 2004 as part of the Labour Force Survey for the autumn quarter. The TUC said people were spending longer getting to work because of what, they said, were high house prices and rents, and poor infrastructure. “Employers need to address the problem that many of their staff are spending an everincreasing number of hours getting to and from work,” said TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady. “It’s bad enough that most of us spend an hour a day getting to and from work, but spare a thought for those extreme commuters, who travel for more than 10, or even 15, hours a week.” She added: “More

home and flexi-working could easily be introduced to allow people to cut their commutes and save money. “This would not only be popular with workers, but fewer, betterspaced journeys would help beat overcrowding on the roads and railways.” But a Government spokesman said its plans had helped combat housing problems and “got Britain building again” - with more new homes, a £15bn scheme to increase conditions and capacity on roads in England, and “the most ambitious programme of rail upgrades since the Victorian era”. He added: “Government initiatives have helped more than 230,000 people to buy since 2010, and we are supporting record investment in transport infrastructure - more than £127bn between now and 2020.”

New prisons for convicts THE British Government has announced plan for nine new prisons to replace the country’s outdated Victorian jails.
The end of cheap fags? THE Ministry of Health has made it a priority to reduce the consumption of tobacco, and part of the new masterplan will see a hike in counter prices.
The Canary Islands Government has this week agreed to include a rise in tobacco tax, from 2% to 15%, in the Autonomous Region’s 2016 Budget. It forecasts that this measure
will involve the collection of 15 million euros annually. Ricardo Round, General Director of Public Health, said there was unanimity among experts, who believe that the increased price of cigarette packs is the most effective tool for tobacco control. “An appropriate increase in the level of income significantly reduces the number of smokers and the amount consumed,” he added. “The sector favours young people and, if it is more expensive,
fewer will indulge, or they will consume less. Price has an impact on all dimensions of consumption. “Raising taxes is a step forward, but we must also maintain strict control over the illicit trade in tobacco.” Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) prioritised raising tobacco taxes to stop smoking. It is estimated that for every 10% increase in retail prices, consumption is reduced by about 4% in high-income countries and 8% in low-income countries.
hot & wet October THE Canaries experienced an extremely warm October, with high humidity in all the islands. And the traditional heavy rains fell, even more fierce than usual, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
Te m p e r a t u r e - w i s e , October was in line with the last three years and, officially, was classified as “a very warm month”
However, there were significant differences between and within islands. Fuerteventura, the northern half of Lanzarote and the central north coast of Tenerife had an extremely warm month, compared with the monthly standard. Also, Fuerteventura airport had a daily average of nearly 3C more than average, while it was 2.4 degrees cooler in Parador del Teide. Highest temperatures of the month were produced in the south of Gran Canaria, on 3rd October, while the eastern islands re-
corded over five days above 92 degrees Fahrenheit. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura airports also recorded highs of 37.3 and 36.9 degrees Celsius. But the rainfall was above average, especially in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Tenerife. In San Bartolome de Tirajana, three days of rainfall to a depth of over 30mm was rercorded. The number of rainy days ranged from 10 in South Tenerife to an unusually high 20 in Anaga and northwest El Hierro, and La Gomera.
The old buildings will be sold for housing and the move forms part of Chancellor George Osborne’s spending review, with the first five set to be in place by 2020. It means that around 10,000 inmates will be moved to the new jails, at a saving of some £80m a year. As well as the five new sites, prisons will be built in Wrexham and HMP Stocken, while a category C jail in Rutland, and HMP Rye Hill
(a category B prison in Warwickshire, run by G4S), are being expanded. Reading Prison, a Grade II-listed building, erected in 1844 and closed down 2013, is the first to be sold, and more than 3,000 new homes could be built on the sites of the old prisons. Osborne said the reforms, which would provide “much-needed new homes”, were not just about making savings. Justice Secretary Michael Gove said the new prisons would see “ageing and ineffective” jails replaced with “new facilities fit for the modern world”. He added: “We will be able to design out the dark corners which, too
often, facilitate violence and drug-taking. “It is only through better rehabilitation that we will reduce re-offending, cut crime and make our streets safer.” The 10 largest prisons currently operating in England and Wales, which date back to the Victorian era, are: Wandsworth (built 1851) 1,628 inmates Birmingham (1849), 1,450 Liverpool (1855) 1,386 Pentonville, N London (1840-2) 1,310 Manchester (1868-9), 1,286 Wormwood Scrubs, W London (1875-1891), 1,279; Leeds (1847), 1,212 Hull (1870), 1,020 Durham (1810-19), 996 Preston (1840-1895), 841
Russia’s missile deal angers Israel and US RUSSIA is to supply Iran with sophisticated S-300 surface-to-air missiles, having been given the nod after international sanctions on Iran were lifted earlier this year.
It follows a deal over its nuclear programme, but Israel, the US and Saudi Arabia are all opposed to the contract. Russian officials say the first batch could be delivered 18 months
after Iran has specified the S-300 type it wants. Technical talks are continuing. “The deal to supply the S-300 to Iran has not only been signed between the parties but has already come into force,” said Sergei Chemezov, head of Russia’s Rostec arms firm, at the Dubai Airshow 2015 - a trade-only event designed for industry and professionals. The £545m contract, signed in 2007, was frozen by Russia in 2010 because of the international sanctions. But President Vladimir Pu-
tin lifted the freeze in April. Israel and the US fear the missiles could be used to protect Iranian nuclear sites from air strikes. The missiles can shoot down jets and other missiles from a distance of hundreds of kilometres. And the S-300 can be used against multiple targets including jets, or to shoot down other missiles. The S-300B4 variant - delivered to the Russian armed forces last year - can shoot down any medium-range missile in the world today. It flies at five times the speed of sound and has a range of 400km (248 miles). When the Russian deal was suspended, Iran filed a lawsuit seeking billions of dollars in damages. Mr Chemezov said Saudi Arabia had asked Rostec repeatedly not to supply the S-300 to Iran. But he insisted that it was a defensive weapon. Reuters news agency quoted him as saying: “So if the Gulf countries are not going to attack Iran, why should they be threatened? Because this is defence equipment.”

By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct THIS time last year, British holiday-makers coming to Tenerife were getting an average rate of 1.25 euros for “the pound in their pocket” (to steal a phrase from former PM Harold Wilson). So, with the rate moving up to and above the 1.40 mark, tourists from the UK will have an extra 11% or so for their Sterling. Take a trip to Siam Park for two adults and two children as an example: in October 2014, this would have been £91.20 (based on interbank rates at 114 euros).
13th November - 19th November 2015
What a difference a year makes … This year there would be a saving of around £10/14euros, on this one day out. With the current improved rate, the average British family on holiday will have more disposable income to spend on eating out, perhaps renting a car to explore the Island and shopping - not forgetting those allimportant souvenirs giving a much-needed boost to our local economy. Of course, this is not only good news for tourists but also for those expats: Pensioners, Swallows and anyone whose income originates in UK
and who - not that many years ago - were getting almost a one for one return for their pound. With the recent problems in Tunisia and Egypt, the Canaries have become even more popular and this, in turn, could result in more visitors looking to invest in property here. Property buyers with Sterling can get their 100,000-euro holiday home for nearer £71,000, compared with £80,000 last year. Unfortunately, you can’t please everybody. People selling their property or holiday home in Tenerife, who need or want to repatriate their
funds to the UK, will not get as many pounds as last year. If, as predicted, the interest rates in the UK go up, it will strengthen the pound and reduce further the sum of GBP received. Depending on individual circumstances, and provided there is no urgent need for the money, the options available are: leave the funds in euros until the rate improves - however long that may take, and bearing in mind GBP could continue getting stronger. Or, “bite the bullet” on the rate, get it back to the UK to buy an-
EUROPEAN INHERITANCE - THE NEW REGULATIONS
By Mariano Zunino Siri
“Are we fully-covered?” It’s a question posed in Canarian Weekly’s web page regarding the succession because of a death, and I have no hesitation in returning to the subject with a short summary of the law.
The regulation, under consideration since 2012 and in force from 17th August this year, applies to those who have passed away since then. TERRITORY: the Regulation will apply to all international succession - if produced within European Union territory - whether or not the deceased was an EU citizen. It is not applicable to Denmark, UK and Ireland, but does apply to those citizens resident in another EU country. MATERIAL LAW: it is applicable to all succession, barring taxation and administrative matters, marital status, gifts, capacity, company law, real-estate rights,
economic regime of marriage, registration. C O M P E T E N T COURTS: in general, the competent Court will be the one where the deceased had his/ her residence at the time of death. However, under some circumstances, it could be the Court of the nationality of the deceased if he expressly designated such Court (in a Will) and subsidiary, the Court of an EU member State where the assets are located. APPLICABLE LAW: generally, the law of residence at the time of the death. This means a substantial change with Spanish legislation that state, as per the Civil Code, that the applicable law to the succession is the national law (nationality). The new regulation is applicable to all UK, Ireland and Denmark citizens resident in other EU member states. For instance, the estate of a British citizen resident in Spain will be regulated by the jurisdiction of Spanish Courts. But the regulation allows people to choose in their Will to apply their nationality law. It should be stated expressly in the Will. Hence, it is very important for a British national resident in Spain
to consider if he/she wishes that his estate to be governed by Spanish law, including the application of “legitima” right (right of the children to 66% of the estate) or, on the contrary, to be regulated by his/her law of nationality (British law in this case). Despite this, there is an exemption to the law of residence when the Regulation says: “Where, by way of exception, it is clear from all the circumstances of the case that, at the time of death, the deceased was manifestly more closely connected with a State other than the State whose law would be applicable under paragraph 1, the law applicable to the succession shall be the law of that other State.” This question is exceptional, which means that it is advisable for all foreign citizens having properties in Spain to ask for legal advice in order to grant a Spanish Will, or modify the old one granted (if any). DECISIONS: RECOGNITION AND ENFORCEMENT: all decisions granted in a EU member State will be recognised all around the EU without any special proceeding required. Such decisions will be also enforceable in EU countries when,
on the interest of the party, they have been declared enforceable by a local Court or authority (there are some exceptions). This is also applicable to Notary public decisions. EUROPEAN SUCCESSION CERTIFICATE: an application form created by the Regulation to enable inheritors, executors and administrators,to prove their capacity and interest in all countries in which Regulation is applicable. ARE WE FULLY COVERED?: In Law, there is black and white and I understand that this question was answered when I said: “It is advisable for all foreign citizens having properties in Spain to ask for legal advice in order to grant a Spanish Will or modify the old one granted (if any).” This is more recommendable to all foreign citizens residents in Spain, in whose country there is no “legitima” (irrespective of the wishes of the deceased to leave all to his/her children). Roller-coaster crash leads to Alton Towers sackings AS many as 190 workers at Alton Towers could be sacked following the theme park’s major roller-coaster crash earlier this year, which led to the number of customers plummeting and a sharp revenue drop.
Company owner Merlin Entertainment said visitors shunned the park after the horrific incident involving The Smiler ride in June. It left five people seriously injured, and the 500-acre Staffordshire park was closed for four days. A statement read: “At the end of a very difficult year, Alton Towers Resort has confirmed a proposed restructure of the business, to be completed in time for the opening of the new season in March 2016. “Regretfully, however, it may result in the loss of up to 190 salaried jobs across the resort. We anticipate some of these will be accounted for by a programme of non-replacement of existing vacancies, early retirement, redeployment elsewhere in the group, and voluntary redundancy. “As soon as employee representatives have been appointed, a consultation period will begin.” It added that the company appreciated
the contribution employees had made to the business and “just how distressing this will be for everyone”. Smiler crash victim Leah Washington, who had her left leg amputated following the incident, has received a number of vile Twitter messages, making fun of her following the horror crash. Her boyfriend, 19-year-old Joe Pugh, had both knees smashed when two carriages collided, while Victoria Balch, 20, lost her right leg in the crash and her partner, Daniel Thorpe, 28, also suffered leg injuries. In September, Merlin Entertainments said the wet weather and memories of the accident continued to weigh heavily on the business. While third-quarter revenues were in line with expectations, rising 0.3%, chief executive Nick Varney said it could take until 2017 before trading returned to normal. Merlin is the second-biggest visitorattractions group in the world, behind Walt Disney. But it dropped much of its advertising campaign ahead of the crucial summer trading period, which cost the company many customers. In August, several areas were deserted, with empty rides still running. Visitors could get straight on to rides which, previously, had two-hour queues.

The Hunt: Jungles Hide And Seek
13th November - 19th November 2015
S unday
BBC1, 21.00
The third episode of the series follows tigers, harpy eagles, chimpanzees, army ants and other predators as they rise to the challenge of hunting within the forest. This is a dense, confusing, three-dimensional world, one in which even finding prey is a maddening task. Once found, there are other problems to solve: there is no clean line of sight to be had, there is no space to pursue prey at speed, and there are innumerable escape routes off in all directions. The prize for succeeding at nature’s great game of hide and seek is one worth winning. Forests cover one third of the land surface, and concealed within are more than half of the species on Earth. Each type of forest hosts its own version of the game, and in each there are those who play it well. The episode begins with the largest forest predator of all, the tiger, as it learns how to use the features of the forest to ambush deer. It continues by travelling to the frozen northern forest, to hunt through snow tunnels with the pine marten; to Europe’s deciduous forests, flying alongside sparrowhawks; and ultimately to the jungle, the most labyrinthine forest of all. There we find jumping spiders, tarsiers, eagles and chimps, each overcoming the difficulties of their surroundings with remarkable strategies.

The Coroner BBC1, 14.15 Crime investigations against a stunning seaside backdrop are at the heart of this entertaining new drama series, which follows a high-flying solicitor who returns to live and work in the small town she escaped as a
teenager. As coroner, Jane Kennedy’s job is to investigate sudden or unexplained deaths in a beautiful English coastal community. With a new and intriguing case to investigate in each episode, starting with the discovery of a body, Jane finds herself having to work with her old flame Davey Higgins, who is now the local detective sergeant. The Coroner combines mystery and potential danger with the warm, lighthearted tone of Jane’s relationships with her colleagues, family and the local community. While Jane is talented and tenacious in seeking justice for the dead, her personal life is a bit more haphazard. Jane (Claire Goose) is woken by a call from Clint (Oliver Gomm) telling her that a boy (Steve Kernan, played by Archie Rush) has been found dead at the base of a lighthouse. Jane then finds that her daughter Beth (Grace Hogg-Robinson) has snuck out of the house and is at a sunrise beach party. At the scene, Davey (Matt Bardock) tells Jane that a text message to Steve’s mother, May (Sophie Duval), suggests suicide but a devastated teenage girl (Imogen Waterhouse) turns up at the Coroner’s Office telling Jane that Steve would never have killed himself. Jane talks to Steve’s parents and feels that his mother is holding something back. Meanwhile, Davey discovers that Steve’s best friend, Matt (Oscar Lloyd), is Beth’s new boyfriend. Jane tries her best to befriend Matt while investigating Steve’s death and searching for the mysterious girl who visited her. The question on everyone’s minds is did Steve jump or was he pushed?

The Crimewatch team are live with the latest crime investigations, news and appeals, including exclusive new leads in the hunt for sixyear-old Rikki Neave’s killer. Rikki was found dead in woods near his home in Peterborough in 1994. The latest 3D crime scene scanning technology, as well as new information from witnesses, could now prove the key to solving the case. Plus, the inside story of how one of the year’s most shocking Crimewatch cases was cracked. April’s programme reconstructed the case of an 18-year-old woman who was grabbed as she waited at a bus stop in Leeds before being beaten about the head with a rock and raped. Chillingly, the whole attack was caught on CCTV. The hunt for the brutal rapist led detectives from Yorkshire over a thousand miles away to a village in Slovakia.

England Internationals ITV1, 19.30
Mark Pougatch introduces live coverage of England’s friendly against France live from Wembley. England boss Roy Hodgson will relish the test that France provide - after qualifying with a 100 per cent record for Euro 2016, the Three Lions may see Les Bleus as a step in class to the opposition England faced. The French qualify for Euro 2016 automatically as the hosts, but a clutch of players based in England including captain Hugo Lloris, Manchester City’s Bacary Sagna, Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin and Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud will be hoping to get one up on their club team-mates this time. The last time the two teams met was at Euro 2012, when Joleon Lescott and Samir Nasri scored in a 1-1 group-stage draw. Studio guests are Paul Scholes, Ian Wright and Lee Dixon, and commentary comes from Clive Tyldesley and former England manager Glenn Hoddle, with Gabriel Clarke the pitchside reporter. Kick-off 7.45pm

MasterChef: The Professionals BBC2, 20:00
Marcus Wareing, Monica Galetti and Gregg Wallace team up to search for the country’s next culinary superstar. Six new chefs begin their bid for the Professional MasterChef title. In the skills test, the first three chefs have 15 minutes to make a buck rarebit - a Welsh rarebit with a fried egg on top. The remaining three chefs must demonstrate butchery skills by asking them to joint a whole rabbit and prepare it for cooking. In the final challenge, the six chefs come together in the MasterChef kitchen to cook their own signature dish. A tried and tested recipe of their own design, this is their last chance to either redeem themselves or continue to impress in an hour and 15 minutes of career-defining cooking. At the end of the test, the judges will decide which three chefs will be sent home. Only the best three chefs will be put through to the quarter-finals.

Dominic Sandbrook: Let Us Entertain You
13th November - 19th November 2015
W ednesday
BBC2, 21.00
In episode three Dominic looks at how post-war culture has not merely been driven by the same qualities and impulses that shaped Victorian Britain - it has also demonstrated many of the same anxieties and preoccupations of that period. In particular, the two main concerns of the Victorian age: the state of the nation, and what might be termed our ‘civilising mission’ - the desire to export British values to the far corners of globe. In a sense, post-war culture has been a process of working through our changing position: coming to terms with our loss of place in the world, and facing up to the legacy of Empire. In so doing, it has reflected a profoundly Victorian series of concerns. Where Dickens was troubled about the impact of industrialisation and work on poor urban communities, post-war artists, writers and filmmakers like Irvine Welsh, Danny Boyle and Catherine Cookson have been preoccupied with the impact of de-industrialisation and lack of work on these communities. Likewise, the civilising mission of the Victorian age has become translated (in the post-war years) into science fiction and fantasy, where British values can be exported, not to far-flung corners of the globe, but to an Empire of the imagination.

Discount Store. Lord Sugar challenges the candidates to open a discount store and, in two days, turn products into profit. Dispatched to Manchester, one team’s squabbling begins en route as they struggle to order popular brand-name products to tempt customers through the door. Haggling their way through the wholesalers, both teams stock up on unbranded products where the profits really lie. Squabbles over customers and attempts to poach each other’s business see tempers flare. Elsewhere, instead of flogging bargains, trading insults becomes the order of the day. As both teams try to barter with the bargain hunters, it’s a race to the finish to see who can buy, sell and replenish the most stock in their pop-up shops. With assets counted and sales totted up, in the boardroom it’s time to take stock. Personalities clash, insults are thrown, and for one unlucky person, Lord Sugar’s patience finally runs out.

Doctor In The House BBC1, 21.00
Doctor in the House is a new three-part health series which sees three normal families inviting a doctor into their lives for two months, to undergo the health MOT of a lifetime. Filmed observationally, the doctor will investigate every aspect of each family’s lives by living alongside them - following them to work, relaxing with them at home, eating with them and even staying in their homes overnight to observe their sleep patterns. Via a series of rigorous observations, medical tests and surprise visits, the doctor will deliver a hard-hitting health diagnosis for the families. Then, launching into a full-scale campaign to turn their unhealthy lifestyles around, he’ll put a range of simple and effective changes into effect. But will each family stick to the regime? After just a few weeks of consultancy, the doctor will repeat the tests that he carried out at the start of the process to see just how much their health has improved. The families are not only shown how to change their eating habits and diets (e.g. time-restricted feeding and fasting) and exercise more (or even exercise less in one case), but also the benefits of cognitive behaviour therapy, acupuncture, counselling, meditation, movement therapy and other similar therapies. Throughout the GP does not prescribe any drugs and only administers, when necessary, vitamins and supplements. One contributor who is on three drugs to treat his type 2 diabetes is, by the end of the trial, down to one. In the same episode, our doctor shows another patient how to deal with the menopause and stress. In the second episode the GP treats a chronic back pain sufferer while overcoming his addiction to painkillers and his son finally finds relief from eczema. In the final episode, another patient also reverses her type 2 diabetes diagnosis and the whole family benefits from new dietary and exercise regimes. The doctor, Dr Rangan Chatterjee (pictured, centre) works as an NHS GP in Oldham where he looks after a deprived and socially isolated patient population. He has a specific interest in, where appropriate, trying to treat people without necessarily resorting to drugs and tries to get the message out there that significant, non-medicinal lifestyle changes can improve your health and, in some cases, save your life.

Brit winter not to be sniffed at
WE HAVE YOU COVERED…
gether to create your own style. Try to stick to basic primary colours, such as blacks, greys and whites as your main colour scheme, and don’t go too wild on the patterns, either. Add a coloured item, such as a tie or belt. This is great for a casual night out, and I’m sure you’ll be going on a few during the festive months. It can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion. But remember, if it isn’t clashing, it isn’t fashion!
By Carl Pattison
IF it’s a trip away from the Island, or a colder day here, you guys need to “layer” up… you don’t need to pile on thick, heavy clothes to achieve this winter’s look.
Layering your clothes will give them structure and create a smart/casual image. Mixing up classic items such as dress-shirts and waistcoats, teamed with rougher-looking jeans and boots, creates an individual style. It’s all about blending together various items of your clothing to give them a new edge, without going out and spending a fortune. Classic materials work well with roughed-up denim. Add a tie to a shirt and quirk it up a little...as long as the mix of smarter and casual are there you’re on to this winter trend. Bow-ties are big news
this season, and these work really well with a waistcoat, yet mashed up with a pair of jeans. It’s all about clashing those items together so that no one has the same slant on the look. Yet it flows to-
By Val Sainsbury THE average Brit spends more than half of the year suffering from cold, injury or ailment, and feels 100% fit and healthy for just 171 days. A new study, commissioned by Tetley Tea, examined the health niggles, ailments and injuries of 2,000 people and reached this worrying conclusion. Illness, tiredness and hangovers, together with aches and pains, mean most people operate well below par for more than six months of every year - and half of their adult lifetime. That equates to a shocking 34 years of feeling under the weather, or carrying some kind of health complaint. It also emerged that the typical adult feels “run down” on two days of the average working week and, as Brits head into the winter months, they’re likely to endure three bouts of cold, four
headaches and two sore throats per season. The research found that, in the UK at least, you will also be tested over the winter by getting soaked in the rain five times, stepping in four puddles that drench the feet and will be irritated by a person clearing his/her throat throat, or coughing repeatedly, on four occasions. Battling winter illness and unfortunate events will see you miss out on six social occasions because you simply won’t be up for it. And those fortunate enough to avoid illness thus far might not have long to wait. According to the data, the most likely time to be hit by a cold is in the first two weeks of November! In a bid to feel better, Brits spend on average £132 each, and they take measures such as wrapping up warm and drinking warm drinks to beat the winter blues. However, they are twice as likely to reach for chocolate than they are to turn to vitamins, fresh fruit and vegetables
when feeling under the weather. But it’s not all doom and gloom because Brits cite Christmas, hot drinks and cosy nights in as the things that make putting up with the colder months worthwhile. On the other hand, comfort food, winter walks with the family and the possibility of snow also warm the spirits for many. Dr Hilary Jones, GP and TV presenter, worked with Tetley Tea on its “Winter-Proof Yourself” study, and is now calling on the nation to take action. “The degree to which winter impacts negatively on our health and wellbeing is clear,” he says. “Battling anything from sniffles to headaches can contribute to that rundown feeling regularly, with those rumbling winter grumbles, including reduced daylight and higher heating bills , only serving to make things worse.” Still want to desert Tenerife for Britain to “celebrate” Christmas and the New Year?

for a hair-up will finish that outfit perfectly. Forget rigid-and-set because hair-ups have gone all casual and dishevelled. Bang-on trends are up-dos with waves, à la Thirties. Height and sleekness are right up there on the wish-list of celebs’ hair-ups as they start the party season. And even if you don’t have the right length, your stylist can add pieces of real hair just for the night, giving you the volume and length you may need. Clever stylists can transform any length of hair into an up-do. You just need to give us an idea of what you’re wearing so we can suggest styles to complement your outfit.
Don’t forget, too, that if you’re really going somewhere special, adding a hair ornament will tie-in the hair with your jewellery, matching everything from top to toe. And if you want to try out a style at home, all you need is plenty of lacquer, patience and an idea of what you are hoping to achieve. Even the simplest design can look stunning if you get it right. Start by giving your hair a volumising blowdry, with plenty of root-boosting spray or mousse. And once you have created the lift, back-comb into your basic shape to give the outline of your chosen style. Use grips to hold into place as you smooth out the hair, using plenty of gel spray to put the final hold to it - not forget the shine spray to give it that glossy shine. Voila! You are set to stun this party season as you make that allimportant entrance to your special night out.

Entertainment
13th November - 19th November 2015
By Jamie Droo IS it really November already? Where has the year gone? The Christmas advertising campaigns have started on the box, and Tenerife entertainment scene’s lull has begun.
But this doesn’t happen in every area over here. Some places which usually experience this downturn are actually seeing the complete opposite. Every year, the Island falls quiet on two occasions: just before Easter, generally, and good old November. I was chatting with Wes, who manages the Highland Paddy on Parque de la Paz, who told me the normal November tranquillity was a far cry from what was actually happening. Many UK holidaymakers seeking a little sunshine during the great British winter would normally flock to those resorts which have had their tourism industry effectively halted by civil unrest. And those who already had holidays booked in these resorts have been offered alternative holiday destinations, the Canary Islands being the choice of a large majority. This, in the shortterm, is good for places like Tenerife’s local bars and businesses. But in the grand scale of things, what’s happening in the troubled countries is making the world a much smaller, less-travelled globe. Entertainment has no angle on politics and, really, is a world aside from any troubles. The stage is a place where performers can escape their own woes - and a seat in the audience does exactly the same thing. Entertainment allows all walks of life to release stress and forget about the things that bog us down. It’s a chance to give your

brain a rest and concentrate on laughter and enjoyment. So, if there is an extra influx of people here through redirection, I am certain they will all have an amazing time. And had they gone to their original destination, they would never have experienced our extremely diverse, talented, entertainment scene. I was asked by a family originally destined for Egypt who I would recommend they see during their two-week holiday. Although I could probably name 100 acts easily, I couldn’t actually say which 13 shows they should see. To enjoy the best Tenerife has to offer, I believe a tourist would have to be here for almost two months, be out every single night and, in some cases, catch two shows a night in separate venues. I sat for a while with the parents - Mum, Dad and two children - who had never visited Tenerife before. And the kids were at that difficult age to please. The young man, around 14-15, had one mission: to look as cool as he could with the girls. His younger sister, around 12, wanted nothing more than to use wifi. The parents, however, insisted they wanted to
see as much entertainment as they could fit in. They’d been told by their tour operator, after being redirected, that this Island had the best entertainment scene in the whole of Spain. It was nice to hear that the big tour operators are promoting the Tenerife in such a manner. After all, they’re not telling fibs just for a sales pitch because the holiday had already been sold. It was just about a choice of where they wanted to go instead, and they chose Tenerife because of the entertainment standard they’d been told about. I ended up recommending who I thought they should try to see, but there are so many more acts I could and should have been mentioned. Mum and Dad showed a big interest in tribute shows - the wife is a Rod Stewart fan - so I told them instantly about Adam Saint. He always performs a marathon show and is sometimes on stage for 90-plus minutes if the audience are enjoying themselves. I also tipped my hat to Ged Bolton, who has been treading the boards here with his Rod for almost 15 years. I will always promote Tony Kay’s Gary Bar-
low & Take That Show in the tribute category, simply because I have never seen any tribs who come as close as Tony does to sounding and moving like the artiste they are celebrating. The Blues Brothers is a fabulous, fast-paced show covering every aspect of entertainment. Then there’s the King of rock ‘n’ roll! Sean King, resident at Amanda’s bar in Torviscas, performs as Elvis most nights. Johnny Kelly’s Elvis bar, above McDonalds in Torviscas, is another winner, and touring
Elvis, Lesley Presley, always puts on a good show and is probably the most genuine Elvis fan in the Canaries. If you want a twist on the King, try to seek out Isaac’s Comedy Elvis show, where you will be guaranteed laughs as well as the songs you know and love. Max Perry’s Freddie Mercury and Queen Show is definitely another tribute to try to catch. Max’s experience exceeds that of most on the circuit. He combines the skills he has developed as a singer, tribute act and resident compere
to deliver a slick show that involves comedy. And he has a brilliant voice to smash out the classic rock sound of Queen. I could have talked for hours on this category alone, but I don’t think this family expected me to give them such an in-depth entertainment review. I hope they get to see some of the acts mentioned because, although Tenerife was their second choice, the entertainment they see here will ensure they leave the Island believing it is second to none!

By Miruna Voicu BUYING a holiday home in Tenerife is often the culmination of hard work and dreams.
A property abroad represents an opportunity to relax in a different climate, and increase leisure and family time. However, the costs of buying the property and the attached expenses are considerable, and this means that furnish-

Furnishing a holiday home
ings need to be done in a cost-effective manner. Fortunately, style does not need to be compromised. The most important thing is to work with the property you have and not recreate a version of your home away from home. Otherwise, you won’t feel as if you are on holiday! Finding a balance between representing your personality and your new surroundings is important. This can be achieved by aiming
for a 75/25 split in favour of local-style furnishings, and the remainder of your personal taste. Intersperse local fixtures with small personal items. Also, climate will play a part in the textures and materials chosen. Certain plastics are illsuited to warm weather, and heavy, textured materials are not suitable for hot climates. Smooth shiny surfaces are easy to keep clean, and bedspreads and cushion covers should always be washable. Take into account, as well, how you are likely to spend your time on holiday. You may be less inclined to spend hours in front of the TV, and more time outside on the patio. The sofa may not get as much use as in the UK, but may also double up as a bed to increase occupancy. It´s worthwhile investing
in a quality sofa-bed to avoid future problems. Your kitchen should have a full inventory, but you may not need all the items you have at home as you are likely to eat different food and, for example, barbecue more. In most cases, the holiday home will be smaller than the origi-
nal home, so storage may be an issue. These problems can be solved with some careful planning, using beds with storage, bedside tables with drawers, and shelf units within cupboards, which can all help to maximise space. If you are likely to be away from your holiday home for long periods,
consider fitting sun-curtains or blinds, which will keep your property cool and dark - and prevent fading. So work with the style of the property and the climate, and make the most of your holiday investment. *All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.

Cats Welfare news
Bella’s a real beauty BELLA was found heavily pregnant and wandering the streets of Los Cristianos some months ago. She was a fantastic mum to five of her own babies and eight other surrogate ones.
They’re all grown-up and have loving homes now. But, while other foster cats who came after her have been “chosen” for new homes, poor Bella is always overlooked. It’s so sad because she’s a beautiful cat vocal, inquisitive and loving. She would do well as a house cat, or with access to outside. She really will make a fabulous companion, and we’re sure you would like to meet her, with a view to a week’s trial. She is spayed, leukaemia and AIDS negative, and will be microchipped and have injections done through the charity. Use the contact form on our web site www. cats-welfare -tenerife. com or ring 680 475 500 between 10am-6pm daily. Adopt at your leisure If you thinking of adopting a cat or kitten but worried about which one to choose? Worry not, because Cats Welfare ensure it is an easy process. All cats and kittens, available with pictures and information, can be seen on our website
www.cats-welfare-tenerife.com/pets The site is updated daily, which means it always has the latest availability. Once you’ve spotted a cat or kitten you are interested in, fill in the contact form on the website, or call 680 475 500 between 10am-6pm daily. We will be happy to answer any questions. Sadly, we aren’t in a position to have a refuge, but all our animals are in foster care and we can arrange for a noobligation visit if you would like to meet any
of them. Following the visit, a one-week, noobligation trial in your own home can also be arranged. It gives you time to get to know your new friend really well, and ensures he/she settles into your home and is compatible with any other pets you may have. Is it expensive to adopt? No, we do not ask for an adoption fee. Some people like to make a donation to our charity for which we are grateful, but you are under no obligation. But please consider
the long-term cost of cats. As well as food, litter, toys etc, there will be vet fees if they become ill, along with regular worming and flea treatments. More information can be found on our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife.com/adoption-info Donations required Do you have a pet-carrier, pet bed, cat toys or scratch-posts you don’t need any more? We always need more of these items, in a good, clean condition. They can either be dropped into our charity shop or ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will be happy to arrange a convenient time to come and collect. Donations of these kind of items mean that money we raise through our charity shop can go towards paying vet bills instead. Our Charity shop Our only income is raised at our charity shop at San Blas, on Golf del Sur, by the church square. We are fortunate to receive many excellent items, thanks to your generosity each week, but we always need more. If you are having a clear-out and would like to donate good quality, smaller items and clothing, please drop them into the shop. If you have any large quality items to donate, we have a large van available to pick them up, free of charge. Call Mark on 636 590 557 and he will be happy to arrange a convenient time for collection.

Another silent killer TENERIFE Isla Sur Lions Club has arranged a Diabetes Awareness Campaign with the new British Medical Centre, to run for three weeks at its Costa del Silencio clinic in Coral Mar.
The nurse will take a blood sample, which will be analysed locally, and a report will normally be issued the same day.
Just turn up at the clinic from Monday to Friday (9-11am), starting on Monday, 23rd November and finishing on Friday, 11th December. It costs 12 euros, but most importantly, have nothing to eat or drink during the morning before the test. The cost covers the syringe, the analysis and a small donation to the Lions Charity. The clinic gives its time for free. If a problem is detected, further discussion with the doctor will cost.
There are 3.2 million people in the UK affected by diabetes, and a further 630,000 who have the condition but aren’t aware of it. It is a manageable condition, but, when not well-managed, it is associated with serious complications, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, nerve damage and amputations. If you have any of these listed symptoms, which are common in both 1 and 2 diabetes, you really need to have
your blood checked by a professional: *Urinating more often than usual, particularly at night *Feeling really thirsty *Feeling very tired *Unexplained weight loss *Cuts or wounds that heal slowly *Blurred vision *Frequent episodes of thrush *Slurring words Your good health is important to you and your family, so don’t miss this opportunity to have a blood check.

THE 1st Los Cristianos Rainbows, Brownies and Guides hosted a
Such a special day...
REMEMBRANCE Sunday began with a moving Royal British Legion service at Westhaven Bay, Costa del Silencio, and was attended by over 300 people. As usual, the ceremony was carried out with dignity and pride by all those there to remember. Afterwards, a fundraising social event, organised by Arona’s Las Galletas and Costa del Silencio Lions Club, took place locally at the Albatros Bar. It started at 1pm and was exceptionally well-supported by locals and tourists alike. Compere Aidy Evans, in good form as ever, coordinated a full afternoon’s entertainment, provided free of charge by all the artistes. The Lions Club ladies worked tirelessly on the Burger Stand, raising over 200 euros, and the raffle and bucket collection amounted to 710 euros. The total was rounded up to 1,000 euros, given on behalf of the Lions by Club President Brian Belshaw. Special thanks to everyone who donated raffle prizes.

Safari so good for a genuine eye-opener
DOES the idea of viewing the magnificent scenery of the Canary Islands while sitting on a coach, listening to the spiel in several languages, leave you feeling a little deflated?
Fear not because Tamaran has come up with the perfect solution: a jeep safari, and I’m not talking about a bumpy, off-road kind of experience. I am talking comfort - that personal touch - and getting up close with nature. Tamaran, formed in 1987, has expanded its fleet to incorporate high-quality, all-terrain vehicles (ATV): the classical adventure model and the comfortable and spacious minivan, adapting to all needs. With a personal guide for each jeep, you receive that informal yet professional touch, and in your own language. You taken on to unimaginable roads and routes to reach inaccessible spots, driving
through unique, old and typical villages. You also travel around volcanic areas, complete with stunning sceneries, with various stops and multiple services. In fact, you are provided with everything to enjoy a unique experience, in a unique setting. Whether you want to see more of Tenerife, or pop over to La Gomera - our nearest neighbouring island - Tamaran can accommodate you. We chose the VIP option for the Island Tour, a chance to discover Tenerife’s most emblematic places on what is, undoubtedly, a different route. Firstly, off to Masca - a small mountain village - and its hamlets on the west coast. It has around 90 inhabitants
and sits at an altitude of 650 metres in the Macizo de Teno mountains, which extend right up to the north-west coast. This has to be one of my favourite Tenerife areas, like a different country altogether when compared with the hustle and bustle of the touristic south. On to the Isla Baja, Orotava Valley, where
the slopes are carpeted with Tenerife’s current cash crop - bananas and the town of La Orotava is still Tenerife’s most aristocratic. The streets of the old town are lined with Renaissance mansions, awash with architectural treasures. There are beautiful churches and convents, independent and exclusive shops, el-
egant restaurants and beautiful gardens. And finally, of course, there’s Teide National Park, centred on Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain (3,718m high) and the world’s thirdlargest volcano, from its base on the ocean floor. Teide was declared a national park on 22nd January, 1954, which makes it one of the old-
est in Spain, with an area of 18,990 hectares. And it was named a prestigious World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 28th June 28, 2007. The jeep drivers show you the uniqueness of the places you visit, which is what makes the tour that extra bit special. With time for lunch to enjoy the local cuisine, you surround yourself with a unique atmosphere and live a different experience aboard the four-wheel drive. For more information on Tamaran and its other tours, contact Tenerife Sunshine on 922 751 867, or pop into one of our offices. You can also visit www. tenerifesunshine.com for some amazing savings.
New-car registrations
By Emma at Motorworld
THERE are constant changes in Spain regarding the laws, rules, regulations and, of course, the dreaded paperwork concerning brand-new cars.
Right now, cars have two manually-produced sheets of paperwork (although printed via a computer, of course). The first identifies the characteristics of the vehicle itself, while the other has the date
of first registration, date of change of ownership, owner’s name and surname, make and model of vehicle, chassis number, type of fuel used, and more recent changes are those showing the date of the last ITV and mileage (kilometres) recorded at the time of the test. For all newly-registered vehicles registered in Spain and the Canary and Balearic Islands, and supplied from Wednesday (11th November), a new electronic tarjeta tecnica (eITV) will be issued for all cars, vans and trucks. Tráfico’s system has already been updated to comply with this. Any vehicle which was registered before this
date will continue to use the old paper versions of the vehicles and are not affected. The DGT has implemented a system whereby manufacturers, importers and new-vehicle sales companies (legally registered) will be able to submit the registration information electronically such as vehicle specification, engine type, make model etc. This can be accessed and checked by DGT officials, probably not dissimilar to a digital certificate issued by the Hacienda (Tax Office), which can be verified digitally where necessary. Once the information has been checked and validated by the DGT
department and/or the person responsible for new-vehicle registrations, he/she will store this information in an electronic register - the Registro de Vehiculos Prematriculados. This, in turn, issues the vehicle identification number (NIVE), which would be unique to that vehicle, as are the current registration numbers. From this, the DGT will then assign that vehicle a registration number, again unique to that specific vehicle, and will issue the Tarjeta de Inspección Técnica, more commonly known as the Green Card. This will be in electronic form only and accessible online only.
Most manufacturers have already been integrated into the project and, last month, almost 50% of registered vehicles had already been equipped with what is to be known as electronic tokens. Next May, this type of system will be used for mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quad bikes. Those cars already registered are not affected by this change because it relates to newly-registered vehicles. So if you have paper Permiso de Circulación and Ficha Tecnica, these will remain valid, and it is important that the original be carried in the vehicle at all times so you can produce them if stopped
by the police. If you carry copies only, you could be fined! You can, however, have photocopies of these documents stamped COPIAS COMPULSADA at Tráfico for a fee, and these are perfectly legal to carry, enabling you to leave the originals at home. You must also carry your original driving licence, passport and Residencia or NIE. It will be interesting to see how this system works in practice, and whether there will be facilities for ITV stations to access the online Ficha Técnica for an inspection. But as this will be in a few years, as always in Spain, so many things can change!

It’s so wide open ANOTHER excellent week in the Direct Telecom Pool League has again proved how close the two divisions will be this year.
In previous seasons the top couple of spots were monopolised by certain teams, but they are finding competition tougher this time around. In either division, there are now four or five teams who could go on to take the title. There is a new leader in Division One as Treehouse A moved a point clear. They had a home game against Terrace Bantams, who have now gone three matches without a point, and over the first four games there was nothing to separate the teams. The home side struck early in the next session, taking two early frames to unsettle the visitors, who then lost the next two frames to give a big advantage to the Treehouse, who were guaranteed a draw. That wasn’t enough, though, and they took full advantage, quickly securing the winning frame. Gaffers A slipped from the top after being entertained by Tenerife Hammers A in a clash known as the “El Classico” of the division. Games between these two are always close, and so it proved at the home of pool, with both teams trading frames. There was tension in the air as the players looked for an advantage, but neither side could get a break. It was cat-and-mouse all the way, but Hammers stole a 6-4 lead late on. This left Wes a chance for the win, but he’d had no luck all night. He jawed the vital
black against Lee and his opponent took full advantage. Wes was still wondering how it didn’t drop when Neil coolly won the last frame to take a vital point. The fixtures between these two teams normally decide the title. But they have now played each other twice, and, looking at the current positions, there will never be a better chance for a rival team to take the title. Dreamers A are still well and truly in the mix and, after last week’s heavy defeat by Treehouse A, they were looking to get back to winning ways against tough opposition in the form of Phoenix Potters. And Los Abrigos is never an easy place to go for a result! However, with the visitors looking to keep pace with the leaders, they made their usual fast start and soon found themselves in front. Potters have been in fine form of late, but they just couldn’t get going against a Dreamers team who had certainly shaken off the defeat. Steve and his team were quickly 3-0 up, and soon closed off the match to retain third spot. Palms B, somewhat of a surprise package this season, had another good week away from home against Rewind Bar A. The hosts had finally been making headway, but they come up against stubborn opponents. The early frames went the way of the visitors, who took the first three, only for Rewind to seal the next three! It was tight, but Palms finished well and captain Jet took the important 12th frame to give them another 7-5 win.

It’s close at the top, and it’s getting even closer at the bottom. A win here or a point there always results in teams trading places. Exiles A, currently the best of the bunch, travelled to Torviscas for their game against Palms A. The hosts, previous titlewinners, have been out-of-sorts this season, and it didn’t look good when they went 3-0 down. But Roscoe kept his cool to get his team back in it, which gave them the confidence to take the next few frames to put themselves right back in it. And from three down (the theme of the night, it seems), they went 5-4 up. But Exiles are a decent side and came back to take a point. Gaffers B were in action against Tenerife Hammers C in what looked like being a close game after a drawn first session. But Gaffers took advantage of being the

home team and got themselves in front in session two. At 5-3 it was all to play for, but, try as they might, Hammers C couldn’t find any form and Gaffers B took the win. In the final game of the night, Bluebell A hosted bottom club Terrace Roosters. The hosts are tough to beat at home, but the Roosters, playing with restored confidence, were matching their opponents. A draw seemed likely until Roosters got the break they needed and just about hung on for a win. In Division Two, Treehouse B, emulating their A team by topping the table, travelled to Los Cristianos to meet Dreamers B. Confidence can be everything in this league, and the visitors is sky-high. Once they started taking frames, they never looked back. Dreamers fought as hard as they could, but couldn’t stop Tree-

house adding another three points. But Crown B, playing host to Hoppys B, are hunting them down. Both teams are league newcomers this season, but the home side have some experienced players - and it showed! They soon moved into a commanding lead and their win never looked in doubt. Crown B are just six points behind now, with a game in hand, and they know they have games to come against the leaders. Bluebell B retained second spot after an away game at Sabores in El Medano. Unfortunately, it was another night for the home team to forget as the visitors quickly moved into the lead. Credit to the home team, though, because they never let their heads drop. They always go to the table and fight, but against Bluebell’s quality players, Sabores came up short again. Picasso’s A are probably the division’s form team right now, and it was another superb week for them against Tenerife Pool Tables.

Fran is proving to be a strong captain and picks her team order well. She went strong for early frames, knowing TPT can be a difficult team, and it paid off as they moved into the lead. It was an advantage they didn’t surrender - and another good win. They are positioned nicely for a shot at promotion, and, maybe, even a late title charge. Another form team are Splash Bar, who have been picking up points quietly. This week saw them away at Hoppys A, and they made a good start by taking the first two frames. But Terry, Bill and Mark struck back to put the hosts ahead. But Captain Craig rallied his troops and Splash took the next five frames for the win, although I believe Steve, from Splash, is now known as Jammy F*****. Terry and Kevin picked up the last two frames for Hoppys, but the damage had already been done, which means Splash Bar are now right in the mix.

Phoenix paste Palms! HAVING played second fiddle to Boothen Army since the middle of August, Phoenix Bar produced what could be a significant result come the end of the campaign, although there are plenty of darts yet to be thrown! Their 8-0 pasting of Palms Pool Bar brought them level on points with the Army, and they now hold top spot on “goal” difference. For their part, Boothen Army’s second successive match with Emerald Shamrocks saw them drop two points, although skipper Grant weighed in with his first maximum. Third place Hoppys Bar might not have seen my warning about the ability of the Exiles Bar players, and they duly came unstuck 5-3 down in Silencio as they lost the trebles and the match! Pas O Nadas A lost the trebles to Waterfall Warriors, but won the match 5-3, with Wattie checking out on 120, while the Playboys held on in the final rubber to squeak a draw at Palms
Sports Bar (thankfully, Fluff kept his trousers on!). After losing an important player - he tripped over a bottle of Drambuie - Phoenix Flights’ match at Clouseaus looked a tricky encounter. But the troops rallied, with a maximum from John, and their 7-1 victory maintains a healthy cushion at the summit of Division 2. The chasing pack, however, has a new look to it. Sandys Chippers, having been on the outskirts of the top three for what seems like an eternity, finally burst through into second place after beating Marilyns 6-2. Summerlands’ draw with Naughty Nautas sees them drop to third, while Sundowners put in a strong performance to win 7-1 at Gaffers Jucee Girls. Pas O Nadas B enjoyed their evening at Bar Leones ... and also enjoyed a 6-2 success. And the wooden-spoon battle at the bottom saw the Playgirls win the trebles leg for a close-fought win over Waterfall B. It’s the next round of

High-fliers keep low profile
YET another disappointing weekend for the Premier League’s so-called superstars, which again means it was a relatively-low, point-scoring week in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League. The usual suspects were there or thereabouts, but it is getting more and more difficult to settle on a team capable of amassing a large haul of points. Lots of the weekend games were close-run affairs and, as a result, the points-scoring team of the week really was a mixed bag. Leading the way with two players was Norwich after a good vic-
tory against Swansea. But they were matched by Leicester, who scored another impressive win. The rest of the team came from Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Stoke, Man Utd, Liverpool and West
Ham. The highest-scoring players were Lingard from Man Utd, and Howson from Norwich, both with 11 points. There has been no change at the top of the table, because it is still led by Frank Devany’s Baines On Toast team.
But he’s caught in the headlights because his advantage has now been trimmed to just two points. Still in second spot is Passo Utd, coached by Trevor Passingham. He will have enjoyed his week and will now fancy his chances of taking top spot once we return to league action. Dave Stringer’s Bilic’s Boys are third and Neils Gooners, managed by Neil Lobban, are fourth - and both are waiting to pounce. Honours for team of the week are shared between Lee Hinxman’s Hinxy’s Hurricanes and Family Ties, managed by Lynn Stringer (is
she sneaking a peek at Dave’s team?). They both amassed 69 points, Lee being helped out by Jamie Vardy as captain with 18 points, and Lynn by Harry Kane with 16, and Manuel Lanzini’s 10.
We now break for the international friendlies and, when we resume, one or two players will be returning from action. So don’t forget to check the injury list and adjust your teams accordingly!

Pep talk works wonders CD Tenerife 2 Alaves 0
By Roscoe PEP Marti’s reign got underway in the best possible fashion for CD Tenerife fans last weekend with an encouraging win that should be the springboard to a charge up the table.
The visitors are a decent yardstick, but the hosts made them look like cannon-fodder. Marti must have been thinking this management lark was a piece of cake! In his first-ever game in charge, he had the team well-organised, confident and, to these eyes, they seemed to be free. Former boss Raul Agne set the side up with a static system, but against Alaves there was certainly more movement up front. One swallow doesn’t make a summer, but this was a million miles better from Pedro Martin. He finally opened his Tenerife account with a smart second-half finish after a gorgeous buildup. The pass from Cristo Gonzalez to set him up was out of the top Position 1

drawer and yet Pedro finished it like a player with new-found confidence. He had hit the post in the first half as well. It was encouraging. Aitor Sanz is back to his best in midfield after a sticky start to the season, and the midfield three, with Vitolo and Alberto, is starting to gel. Alberto has already been rewarded this
week with a nice pay rise and a three-year contract. I said pre-season how vital he would be. He is the right age, local and ready to go to war. The side, in many ways, should be build around him. In a season, we may be saying the same about Omar Perdomo. He got his first Tenerife goal against then league leaders Osasuna and backed that up against

Alaves with a finish that bordered on the cheeky. Timing his run to perfection, he tore through on goal. With just Fernando Pacheco to beat, he gave the keeper the eyes and coolly slotted the ball in the opposite corner. It was a finish reminiscent of a certain Ayoze Perez! The final score looked lovely, but it really could have been three or four nil. And this against a side who chinned Cordoba a fortnight ago. If that weren’t encouraging enough, a glance towards the dug-out and the stands would have raised a smile. Tomas, who is starting to adapt to the Spanish game, will be a real asset in the next month. A fully-fit Ricardo is back; while Abel and Nano sit await their chance. All this, with the main attacker Choco in the stands a few weeks from a clean bill of health. For Pep Marti, it was a lovely start. He would have been delighted with the clean-sheet. Only once did Alaves really threaten, but Dani was more than up to the task. Club captain Suso spoke this week about the new era, saying: “It was a much-needed win. I think we are a good team. The players had to take a step forward
after the Lugo defeat. “Raul lost his job because of us, and we were disgusted with that. It was our fault. But now Marti is here and we had a few days with him. He has played here, so he knows what we have to do.” Suso makes a good point. Marti knows the expectation of club and fans, but is not tainted by previous campaigns. He is fresh eyes with a bit of know-how. And Suso believes his coaching inexperience is not a problem “To be a coach, I do not think you need to have so much experience as he was playing with the game’s elite,” he said. “Marti told us we had to play more attacking football in the opponents’ half. He gave us belief that we could play how he wants us to play, and that generates trust. Marti likes to play. “Everyone knows we are an aggressive team, and he wants us to channel that going forward. He wants us to pressure with the ball, force their mistakes - and we did that last weekend.” Quite. This week, it’s a trip to the mainland to face in-form Albacete. There is no Choco Lozano for Tenerife because he is on international duty
with Honduras, as is the host’s star man Jonathan Mejia! They are both in line to face Mexico in a World Cup qualifier. Albacete coach Luis Cesar has done a great job since taking over in March 2013. He guided them out of the third tier and, on a small budget, kept Albacete up last season. This time around they made a slow start, but the board didn’t panic. They have been rewarded with wins over Cordoba and Lugo in recent weeks. They also have a player in Portu, who is fastbecoming one of the best in the league. He has always had the talent and, at Valencia, he was “talked about”. He’s a tough-tackling midfielder and I mean tough! He certainly loves a booking. Two seasons ago he collected 19 yellow cards from just 36 matches and this, is many ways, led to Valencia cutting their loses. But Cesar has been a calming influence. Last year, his card count dropped to just seven from the same number of games. And this year he has started to find the net. He is a player … and his battle with Alberto should be tasty!
