The terror attacks we’ll never forget Continued from front. These attacks struck deep into the heart of the society by targeting Friday-night revellers in a variety of venues. A football stadium, rock concert, bars and restaurants … the perfect symbols of a free and open society. At the time of writing, the gun and suicide bomb attacks in Paris had left 129 people dead and hundreds injured. Since last Friday’s atrocities, the world has stood behind France. Retaliatory air-strikes from French planes on I.S strongholds in Raqqa, Syria, are said to have been a success. And there was some good news when Abdelhamid Abaaoud, suspected ringleader of the Paris attacks, was killed in Tuesday’s raid in the suburb of Saint Denis. After a seven-hour stand-off between suspected terrorists and special forces, his body was found riddled with bullets and shrapnel in an apartment in the northern suburb of the French capital. The 28-year-old Belgian national was identified from fingerprints and saliva samples. Eight people were arrested and two killed in the raid in the multi-cultural St Denis. It was initially thought that Abaaoud had fled to Belgium after the attacks, before being smuggled into Syria. A massive manhunt, which was continentwide, eventually led police to an apartment just five minutes’ walk from the Stade de France. At 4.30am local time, heavily-armed police stormed the building after a tip-off. A woman at the flat - Abaaoud’s 27-year-old cousin, Hasna Aitboulahcen - died during the raid after activating a suicide vest. Jean-Michel Fauvergue, who led the tactical RAID police unit responsible for the assault, described Aitboulahcen’s death, saying: “After a long fire-fight, we heard a loud explo-
sion. The windows of an apartment were shattered, blown from inside to outside. That’s when we saw a human body, a woman’s head, fly through the window and land on the pavement, on the other side of the street. “A suicide bomber had just exploded. The blast was so devastating that a supporting wall moved!” Fauvergue also revealed that the sniper fire then hit a male terrorist firing at police, but he added: “Despite this, the shots from the terrorist continued. We had two theories - he was fighting for his life, or there was a third man inside. Our snipers thus launched grenades to saturate the space.” Fauvergue described the terrorist cell as “real professionals” who were “super motivated”. He confirmed that his force fired at least 5,000 rounds at them, as well as scores of grenades, using rifle-mounted launchers. As we go to print, investigators are still looking for another suspect, Salah Abdeslam, who is believed to have travelled to Belgium after the attacks on Friday night.
He was high on French and Belgian wanted lists, and had even been in Turkish custody earlier in the year. Somehow, he was released and, in the last few months, it appears that he managed to travel from Syria to Paris without ever alerting the security services. Yesterday (Thursday), Belgian police raided properties linked to Salah Abdeslam and Bilal Hadfi, one of the terrorists killed outside the Stade de France stadium. Several raids took place in and around Brussels, and one person has been detained, said Belgian prosecutors. French PM Manuel Valls warned that France could face chemical or biological attacks from terror groups, as its parliament voted to extend the State of Emergency, imposed after the attacks, for another three months from 26th November. It was also revealed yesterday that Abdelhamid Abaaoud tried to recruit women living in Spain to join I.S. “This person tried to recruit Spaniards, especially women, through social networks to join and
fight with Daesh” said Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz. America’s Secretary of State, John Kerry, often refers to I.S as Daesh, the Arabic acronym for Islamic State, which is hated by the group. The Interior Minister also said the terror group had focused on recruiting women to “repopulate the caliphate”. Spanish police have arrested several females this year on suspicion of recruiting women and teenage girls for I.S terrorists. And just last month, a 22-year-old Spanish woman was arrested at Madrid airport as she tried to fly to Africa. Spain remains on Alert State 4, which signifies a “Very High Risk” of a terrorist attack. But it is one notch below Level 5, signifying an “Imminent” attack. This weekend’s ‘El Clasico’ football match between Real Madrid and Barcelona, at the Bernabeu stadium, will have strict security measures in place. The 80,000-strong crowd of fans will be guarded by over 1,000 police. There will also be 1,500 security guards, plus a high number of local police personnel. Meanwhile, the growth of jihadist radical activists in Spain continues. Between 2013 and last Sunday (15th Nov), police arrested 120 individuals thought to be taking part in Islamist
terrorism activities. Of those, 45% held Spanish citizenship, according to a report by Fernando Reinares and Carola Garcia-Calvo, investigators at the Real Instituto Elcano thinktank. “There has been a boom in home-grown jihadism in Spain, in tandem with the global jihadist mobilisation that has been affecting Western European countries for the last four years,” reads the report, presented at Monday’s Third Forum on Global Terrorism in Madrid. The figures show that the percentage of detainees with Spanish nationality is three times higher than the prevalence of Spaniards among people convicted of jihadist terrorism, or who died in suicide attacks between 1996 and 2012. Geographically, Ceuta and Melilla are the biggest sources of jihadist activity in Spain. The exclave cities, along the northern coast of Africa, are the birthplace of 75.8% of all detainees arrested for jihadist activities since 2013. Barcelona and its metropolitan area are the preferred places for jihadists living in Spain, and 29% of all arrests were made there. As for the remainder, the study found that most of them were Moroccan nationals. Researchers also noted a change in the average, home-grown jihad-
ists: they are increasingly younger, and, for the last two years, there has been a significant presence of women. Since 2013, nearly 61% of suspects were aged between 15-29, while 15.8% were women, with 13.1% converts to Islam. While these figures were being revealed on Monday, Spanish Defence Minister Pedro Morenés, aboard the Navy frigate Canarias inside Sicily’s Catania port, spoke against restricting entry to refugees fleeing war zones, on the assumption that some jihadists could slip into the European Union. “We cannot equate immigrants and refugees with terrorists,” he said. “We cannot stop humanitarian action just because it may pose a risk. What we need to do is minimise that risk.” The Minister also ruled out having Spain join the coalition bombing the Islamic State. “Nobody in the coalition against ISIS has asked us to do anything more [than we are already doing], which is already quite a lot,” he added. Spain has 300 military instructors in Baghdad and Besmayah, where it is training Iraqi troops to combat jihadism. Morenés added that Spain was supporting France in Mali, Senegal, Gabon and the Central African Republic on global security issues.

Rajoy is maintaining his commitment to refugees THE number of migrants arriving in the European Union is unprecedented, and this increased flow is likely to continue.
The EU, together with the member states, is adopting a wide range of measures to address the challenges, and to establish an effective, humanitarian and safe European migration policy. Managing migratory flows is a shared responsibility and also has a significant im-
pact on the countries of origin and transit. That is why Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy attended the 2015 Valletta Migration Summit in Malta as part of this effort, helping to bring EU and African countries together to work in a spirit of partnership and find common solutions to mutual challenges. Afterwards, Rajoy argued that we must manage both the consequences of the migrant crisis and, “more importantly”, its underlying causes. Among the results of the summit, he highlighted the creation
of a 1.8bn-euro Trust Fund for Africa. Rajoy said the Summit’s goal was to discuss the current migrant crisis - “one of the main challenges for our society”. As the Spanish President explained: “The European Union is a community based on solidarity and shared values, which include dignity and people’s basic fundamental rights, both within our borders and beyond.” With this in mind, he added: “Extraordinary relocation and resettlement mechanisms have been adopted to accept and distribute
160,000 refugees among the Member States of the EU over the next two years.” The PM said Spain would still accept over 17,000 refugees, and process around 200,000 asylum applications. “The most important aspect of this operation is to show solidarity, in a co-ordinated fashion,” he said. “And with the ability to channel the admirable, solidarity initiatives of Spanish society in an orderly manner.” He added: “Spain is strengthening and redefining the national refugee intake and integration system, both
Works Minister connects O R N E L L A Chacón, Canarian Public Works Minister, met Adeje’s business sector during a recent visit to South Tenerife.
Her main purpose was to view the roadworks along the Erques viaduct, which links the
boroughs of Adeje and Guía de Isora. Also in attendance at the meeting, at which the Minister was at pains to point out the importance of government fiscal control bodies, were Adeje Councillors Rosa González Cabrera, Ermitas Moreira García and José María Álvarez Acosta, together with José Luis Delgado, Regional Direc-
tor of Infrastructures. Areas of common interest and relevance to residents here in the South included the final stretch of the ringroad, scheduled to be open next month following the final tests on the Erques viaduct. Improving traffic fluidity between the South, tourist zones and the Island capital was also on the agenda,
which the business sector stressed as vitally important for tourism and business in commercial and residential zones. Street lighting along the TF-1 was also discussed and, in general, Chacón reiterated the Government’s commitment to improving connections between the different parts of the islands.
in terms of material and human resources. “The initial budget has also been increased significantly, while 50 Spanish civil servants, specialising in migratory flow management, have been made available to FRONTEX and the European Asylum Support Office.” Rajoy said an initial pilot project began last week to relocate refugees from Italy, which he added, was “a project that will help us effectively organise the intake of over 17,000 people in need of international protection”. The PM, acknowledging that “the situation remains critical”, said the migrant crisis required “joint and responsible action, based on solidarity”. He also stressed the position Spain has always defended: to manage both the consequences of the crisis and its underlying causes - war, poverty and the lack of opportunities. “As long as these blights exist, largescale flows of immigrants will not stop arriving at our borders,” he said. When asked at the Valletta Summit to share Spain’s experience of co-operation with Morocco, Senegal, Mauritania and other countries in West Africa, Rajoy replied: “Various African leaders spoke to me of their recognition for the work Spain is doing in terms of migration-related co-operation and
dialogue.” He also listed the specific measures adopted in Malta, as well as the 1.8bn-euro Trust Fund for Africa, for promoting development in the countries of origin and transit for migrants; reduction of the costs incurred when immigrants send funds to their countries of origin (in some cases, these represent 10% of their GDP). The Spanish Premier also spoke of the promotion of legal immigration channels and extension of grants for African researchers; improved co-operation with the countries of origin and transit to encourage re-admission of illegal immigrants; the fight against the mafias; stabilisation of conflict zones and promotion of institutionalised regional dialogue. In addition, Rajoy said Donald Tusk, European Council President, called on the EU Heads of State and Government to attend an informal meeting after the Summit, at which the migrant crisis affecting the EU will be discussed. The topics relate to stepping up co-operation with non-EU countries (including Turkey), application of the decisions reached in terms of relocation, the creation of critical points in Greece and Italy, strengthening intake capabilities and improving the shared management of external EU borders.

UB40 to play Arona in 2016 REGGAE band UB40 kick-start an ambitious new project here in the South when they perform a special gig in March. They will play at the auditorium in the Pyramids of Arona on Friday, 18th March 18 the day after St Patrick’s Day.
They will perform some of their biggest hits, including Falling In Love With You, Red Red Wine, Kingston Town, Cherry Oh Baby, Rat In My Kitchen, I Got You Babe, Sing Our Own Song and One In Ten. The venue will have a limited capacity of just 1,500 seats, so the gigs will be intimate. Tickets, already on sale, cost
from 49-79 euros and can be purchased from www.ticketbell.com. The “Legends Live” concept will bring to the South a series of seven unique concerts during 2016 featuring groups and soloists from the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties. A second Legends Live event has also been confirmed for 22nd April, when prog-rock band The Alan Parsons Live Project will also be playing Arona. UB40 have been one of most successful British bands of all time, selling over 70 million records before the band split a few years ago. In fact, there are now two UB40’s! This one features Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue, all founding members of the original UB40. Ali and Mickey left the band in 2008 and reunited with Astro when he left in 2013.
The original UB40 line-up, with Ali, Astro and Mickey, enjoyed huge success over a 30-year period, from 1979 until 2008, including No.1 albums and multiple, top-10 gold and platinum-selling albums, together with Grammy nominations and four No.1 singles worldwide. Their website says: “We would not want anyone to confuse Ali, Astro and Mickey’s band with the band that carried on using the name UB40 after 2008. “Made up of other founding members and new members, they tried to replace us in their attempt to trade off the reflected glory of the success of the original line-up. Only with Ali Campbell, the legendary voice of UB40, reunited with Astro and Mickey, can audiences get to experience the closest thing to the
sound of the hugelysuccessful original lineup of UB40 as all the hits are played. “They can also get to hear these three founding members’ and UK
reggae pioneers’ latest take on the genre.” The Tenerife date is part of Ali and Co’s large 2016 tour. The lads will play a host of dates early in the year
in New Zealand - where Ali spends most of his time - before moving on to Australia and Indonesia. Then they arrive here, before performing eight British dates.

‘Fraud’ war on cabbies
TAXI drivers in Adeje and Arona have come under fire from Council transport chiefs in those areas, who are alleging “fraudulent practices” in tourist areas.
Adeje and Arona Councillors Andrés Pérez Ramos and Leopoldo Díaz, respectively, this week met Cabildo heads to discuss a number of “mutual important” transport issues,
especially with cabbies. Councillor Ramos told Cllr Diaz, together with Initiative and Mobility Ministers Miguel Becerra and Manuel Ortega: “Administrations are drawing up a strategy and co-ordination plan to meet, head-on, the fraudulent practices we have identified in the taxi sector - in tourism zones, in particular.” He added: “We are introducing measures to deal with irregular situations which affect the sector and damage our image. “We must work togeth-
er to step up vigilance of suspicious activities, or persons who offer to take passengers, as well as proper fare systems, etc.” The importance of working across both boroughs was stressed, given the fraud said to be operating, and the huge importance placed by both councils on stamping out any behaviour that would damage tourism, which is their main industry. “Fraud in the taxi sector is a problem that directly affects our main economic motor”, said Councillor Ramos.
TITSA plan to ease motorway log-jams EVERYONE knows that something must be done to ease the congestion on Tenerife roads. And while everyone awaits the day the Railway is built, or a tram system comes to the South, all eyes are on the existing public transport system. And it seems that important discounts on the bus service is coming to the North. It is one of the alternatives put on the table by the Cabildo to help reduce the permanent, earlymorning traffic jams on the North highway (TF5) towards the capital. The insular Government has developed an action plan with 20 initiatives, and a few catch the eye.
Workers and students travelling from the North to the metropolitan area are set to get a massive 85% reduction on bus prices, although the average drop is around 62%. Thus, those who choose the bus from the North to get to Santa Cruz or La Laguna, pay a single price of 1.15 euros each way. In real terms, this would mean a monthly saving of 60 euros. This price, which will be available on direct TITSA lines, will be offered to users who pay either in advance, with a bono ticket or using the mobile application, between 5-8am. In the case of the return, mobile-phone users can also benefit from
this rate at any time of the day. Apart from this reduced rate, there will also be a new offer via the mobile applications. This will enable University of La Laguna (ULL) students, living between Buenavista and La Orotava, to move to the metropolitan area free of charge. These discounts, which begin on 1st December, will take place on bus routes 102, 103, 104, 106, 107, 108 and 310. TITSA will also employ an extra 10 vehicles to cover the anticipated demand. The Cabildo estimates that these actions will save about one million journeys on the motorway annually, benefiting around 4,500 people.
Parliament bids to ease plight of poor THE Canary Islands Parliament has backed the Podemos Party initiative that no Canarian home should be without electricity or water because they cannot afford to pay the bills.
It has been dubbed “energy poverty” and the agreement, reached this week, urged the Canary Islands Government to transfer to an executive of Spain’s national parliament the need to change the system of social bonus for electricity payment. It would then apply to all households in energy poverty, regardless of the power contractor. Employment status or the number of family members and income, are considered the main criteria. The Canarian Parliament also proposed
that the social bond be financed with the 3.5bn-plus euros, received from utilities tax. The agreement includes an amendment by the socialist party PSOE, accepted by Podemos, which calls for the Canarian Executive to extends this to include a suspension of water charges for poor households, large families, long-term unemployed and other groups. Podemos spokesperson Noemi Santana said it should offer “solutions to poverty in
the Canaries”, and accused the nationallyruling Popular Party of inaction. The PP’s Guillermo Diaz Guerra, while saying his party shared the aim of the motion, accused Podemos of not wanting to reach a proper solution. He argued that 120,000 Canarians already benefit from “power aid”, and said it was for the the central government to update the new royal decree or law on intended rates for those “that are financially vulnerable.”

Lets support the spooks... I GUESS all of us have spent hours watching it on TV, or reading about the problems in France this week.
I don’t know which is sadder: the human tragedy of the atrocities, or the fact that we were not too surprised they happened? We’ve had a pretty good run, and the luck was going to run out at some stage. The Charlie Hebdo shootings aside, it has been rather quiet on the terror front since the Madrid bombings. On my Oasis Fm breakfast show, I often talk about the great work our security services do: the unsung James Bonds, who risk everything to keep us free and let us live our lives. Some 99% of terror attacks are thwarted, and you can only imagine the panic if all the details on all the failed plots were made public. Ironically, I caught Skyfall on TV this week. It’s the Bond film that focuses on the humanity of 007 and the security services. Things go wrong, public buildings and the underground
get blown up. The world points its finger at MI6 and M, played by Dame Judi Dench, is under enormous pressure to resign. The same thing happens in the real world. The French security services. we are told. have “strong questions to answer” as to how the Paris attacks were allowed to happen. Allowed? Even with all the modern technology we have in 2015, there is no way, at all, you can monitor everything and everyone. Terrorists are exceptionally-skilled, highlytrained and driven. As are our boys. If we can hide in plain sight, so can they. Then there are the lone wolves. How do you track the unknown? Everyone makes mistakes, and that’s what makes us human. The key is to understand what went wrong and come back stronger. This was demonstrated when the French security service broke up another terrorist cell this week. They, like all our spooks, deserve our support. Now more than ever!

On the reverse is Don Quixote, a character in the Spanish classic by Cervantes Quixote. He is pictured riding his trusted mare Rocinante, while his longsuffering squire and sidekick, Sancho Panza, kneels beside them.
A windmill from the Castilla-La Mancha region, and featured heavily in the novels, is also printed in an inset. The coin commemorates the 400th anniversary of Don Quixote, whose second volume was published in 1615.
Although it has a face value of 30 euros, the limited-edition piece would, typically, cost more because it is made of solid sterling silver. Felipe ascended to the throne after the abdication of his 77-year-old father King Juan Carlos, who stepped down on 18th June. His son’s coronation took place the following day. Over the past year, the Spanish public have seen more of Felipe and Letizia’s two daughters, Princesses Leonor and Sofia, who are 10 and eight respectively.
Put down the fork to ease fears of diabetes ABOUT 70,000 diabetics in the Canaries are unaware they have the disease and so, do not receive treatment. In total, the disease affects an estimated 210,000 people in the islands.
The lack of early detection impairs health and has high economic costs for the public health system. This scenario was exposed, in a ceremony at the Medical College of Santa Cruz, by Alfredo Amigo, ophthalmologist and Medical Director of Amigo Eye Institute; Julian Antonio Gonzalez, Diabetes Association of Tenerife President; and Alicia Parejo, Retina specialist at the Canarias University Hospital (HUC). All three representatives stressed the importance of eating correctly from an early age. Alicia Parejo warned that the archipelago was the autonomous community with the highest percentage of
overweight and obese people. “There are 28% of children who are obese in the Canaries, and our community has the highest rate of obesity across Europe,” she said. “This is really worrying.” Similarly Alfredo Amigo, who said the most common cause of blindness in diabetic patients was through the development of diabetic retinopathy, said: “The retina is a lightsensitive membrane, found in the back of the eye, that allows us to see clearly. “Diabetes can damage the blood vessels that nourish the retina, and this cause the loss of vision. The first symptoms are a progressive decrease in vision, that does not improve with the use of glasses, and dark spots on the eyes.” Julian Gonzalez, Tenerife’s Diabetes Association President, took advantage of the public briefing to demand a comprehensive plan on diabetes. “We need to have a set picture of what happens in the Islands to be able to act,” he said.
Santa Cruz police boost to scare criminals away SANTA Cruz plans to boost its local police force by 118 officers over the next four years in an attempt to cut crime in the Tenerife capital.
Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez made the announcement after a meeting of the Local Security Board of Santa Cruz, also attended by representatives of the Canary Islands Government, as well as the Local Police, the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the Regional Police and Civil Protection. Bermudez denied that the city’s increase in crime, which has
this year gone up 16% against the 2014 figures, is down to the municipality’s lack of police officers. But he added: “We can afford to increase the local police force with our present financial system. Santa Cruz has become a tourist town, and some organised gangs have taken advantage of that to rob our tourists.” The Mayor believes that criminals are attracted to the city by the number of cruise passengers arriving at the port every week. And this is reflected in the official figures, highlighting the rise in crime, such as robberies (up 28.1% from 2014), thefts (up 23.5%) and damage (up 6%).

Catholic bishops’ concern for Catalan independence ROMAN Catholic bishops in Spain are “extremely concerned” about efforts to bring discord to the country’s unity, via a strong independence drive in Catalonia. Separatist Catalan lawmakers have approved a resolution calling on the regional assembly to start working on legislation within 30 days. They plan to create a separate social security system and treasury, with a view to completing independence in 18 months. Ricardo Blazquez, head of the Spanish bishops’ conference, said, during an opening address to an assembly of fellow bishops: “We are extremely concerned by the serious situation created by those who, outside of and against the law, seek to break the unity of Spain. “Unilaterally calling into question this constitutional situation creates insecurity, anxiety, uncertainty, risks chaos and dividing society.” Rarely does Spain’s Catholic Church address political topics.
And when it does, the themes usually concern the church or religious practice, such as abortion and gay marriage. The majority of Spaniards (71%) are Roman Catholic, but two-thirds seldom or never attend Holy Mass, according to surveys. The pro-independence camp won an absolute majority of 72 seats in Catalonia’s 135-seat regional assembly in the 27th September local election, but it attracted just 48% of the popular vote. Polls show that most Catalans, though supporting a referendum on independence, are divided over breaking away from Spain. Catalonia, a northeast region of 7.5 million people, which represents nearly 20% of Spain’s economic output, already enjoys a large degree of autonomy in education, health and policing. But it insists on even greater autonomy, particularly where taxation is concerned, estimating that it gives more to the central government than it receives.

Canaries losing its medical specialists THE Canaries’ public health system is in urgent need of professionals, specialising in various medical departments.
And in recent months, in a double whammy, it has lost some of the interns who spent years practising in archipelago’s hospitals and specialised care-centres. The Medical Union (CESM), in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, says several neurosurgeons, family physicians, internal medicine specialists, gynaecologists, radiologists and pulmonologists have decided to move to other regions. Levy Cabrera, CESM General Secretary in the province, said that since 2001, there have been just two contract talks with family doctors and specialists in the Islands when, legal-
ly, these deals should be done every two years. It is now working on a tender offer,” said Cabrera. “But we hope for new deals to be resolved by the end of the year. Once resolved, we can finalise health places for the next year. “But for many professionals, it is frustrating for them, having to wait so long for a position, and that, in 15 years, there has been two selection processes only.” This is the reason the CESM fears professionals keep walking away to those regions which
do offer public jobs every two or three years, like Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia and Madrid. Cabrera added: “The Ministry should commit in writing to perform two or three selection
procedures before the end of the year. That is the only way to stabilise a workforce which often takes more than 10-15 years to get a permanent contract.” He also pointed out that there were “places to be filled” in some specialist hospitals, like the University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC) and La Candelaria. “The health system requires a public tender at least every two years, but it is not met by the carelessness of politicians,” he said.

Drug dealer simply can’t dodge the law A DRUG dealer, listed among Britain’s 10 “most wanted” fugitives and on the run in Spain, has been nabbed by cops at an address in Alomartes, Andalusia.
The Guardia Civil, detained Michael Roden also known as “Dodge” - and six other suspects earlier this month in the south-western province of Granada. It has been heralded as another huge success for Operation Captura, a combined venture between Spanish authorities, Britain’s National Crime Agency and Crimestoppers, the British police-backed charity which appeals to the public for info to help solve crimes - and pinpoint the criminals behind them. Roden, said to belong to an organised crime group, is wanted by West Midlands Police in connection with the importation of 70 kilos (155lbs) of cannabis into the UK from Spain in 2013. He was convicted in October 2010 of largescale production of cannabis and jailed for three
years in Britain. The 26-year-old, originally from Redditch, Worcestershire, was released early the following year, but he ducked out of his probation conditions and is wanted for a prison recall. He is on a list of Britain’s 10 most wanted fugitives, compiled by Crimestoppers., Spanish police detained Roden, plus three men and three women between 4th-11th October, as part of a probe into a gang suspected of smuggling marijuana into several European Union nations - mainly Britain! The six arrested are from Chile, Romania, Georgia and Spain. A police statement read: “The drug, of a high quality and vacuum-packed, was transported using different types of vehicles, such as campers, trucks and
high-powered cars.” The charges against Roden and the other suspects include membership of a criminal organisation, drug-trafficking, money-laundering, illegal -arms possession and falsifying documents. Police seized 30 kilos of marijuana as part of their operations, on top of several guns and cars, and over 85,000 euros and £600 in cash, during six house raids. Spain’s Costa del Sol once dubbed the “Costa del Crime” - was recognised as a hideaway for British criminals, especially in the late Seventies and Eighties, when there were no extradition agreements with Britain. But the situation changed in 2004 with European Arrest Warrants, making it easier to bring suspected Brit-
ish criminals back to face justice. The latest arrest means that 73 of 86 so far named on the Captura list have been detained. A jubilant Dave Allen, International Crime Bureau chief at the National Crime Agency, said: “The arrest of Michael Roden marks yet another success for Operation Captura, and highlights the effectiveness of the campaign in flushing out fugitives. “We’ve caught 73 out of 86 fugitives on the Captura list, and will continue to work closely with our law-enforcement partners to find the remaining 13.” Lord Ashcroft, founder and Chair of Crimestoppers, said: “The success of Operation Captura has been quite incredible and I commend all those at Crimestoppers, the NCA and the Spanish authorities for their tireless work in locating these wanted individuals. “We are now down to the unlucky 13 who still remain at large, and I would ask anyone with information on their whereabouts to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 900 555 111 in Spain, or 0800 555 111 in the UK, so we can bring them to justice.”
Casillas the Great is honoured by Rajoy
LEGENDARY footballer Iker Casillas has been presented with the Great Cross of the Order of Sporting Merit by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy at Moncloa Palace.
The award is approved by the Council of Ministers and Rajoy said Casillas received it because of his sporting merit, and also for his personal values. Rajoy highlighted the impeccable sporting career of Casillas, at Real Madrid and for the Spain’s national team. “He is one of the athletes to have won the most trophies, and one of the most-loved in the history of Spanish sport,” commended the PM. “At present he plays for Porto, but his life has always been linked to Real Madrid and to
the Spanish national side.” He recalled that Casillas had played more than 900 matches as a pro, and had won more than 160 caps with the national team. And, stressed Rajoy: “In addition to being a great athlete, Iker is also very committed to social causes.” He was appointed a UN Goodwill Ambassador in 2011 and also set up the Iker Casillas Foundation. “It’s a not-for-profit entity to support and contribute to the well-being of the most needy,” said the Spanish leader. The current Porto goalkeeper has also collaborated with other social bodies, such as the Real Madrid Foundation and the Tomillo Foundation. In addition, Casillas has also taken part in food collection campaigns, the fight against the school bullying and young people at the risk of social exclusion.
Whose fingers were in the Embassy till? OFFICIALS at Spain’s Audit Court are probing unexplained expenses of 83,364 euros, accumulated between 2013 and 2014 at the country’s Embassy in London. The bills for furniture, refrigerators, baby alarms, folding bicycles, ice-cream makers, an iPad and telephone lines do not match any of the equipment listed at there. The investigation is focused one just employee - named as Nieves GP - responsible for the accounting for the Embassy’s information department, and also in
charge of suppliers’ payments. The Audit Court’s report says the alleged misuse of Embassy funds could date back to 2006, and expresses surprise that the use of public money for personal gain over several years “did not attract the attention of superiors”. The case was, reportedly, brought to the attention of Spain’s Ambassador to London, former Justice Minister Federico Trillo-Figueroa, in 2013 - a year after he was posted. Investigators are also focusing on one of the
employee’s direct superiors, Ignacio MG, who was head of the Information Department when Nieves GP may already have been diverting funds. He was replaced in 2013, and his replacement, Esther Corral, alerted the Ambassador about the suspect transactions. London’s Spanish Embassy has several offices focusing on trade, tourism, education, culture and science. And the Information Department, at 39 Chesham Place, Belgravia, is in one of the capital’s most exclusive areas.
It is responsible for organising media coverage of all official visits by Spanish dignitaries to the UK, as well as liaising with British and Spanish journalists. The money came from funds allocated to protocol and miscellaneous expenses. But when the newly-appointed Information Department chief noticed invoices for events that she was said to have organised, but hadn’t, she sounded the alarm. There were also bills for TVs, computers, bicycles, and even toasters, which were never
uncovered at the Embassy. Some bills had even been tampered with to prevent identification of the delivery address. The Embassy was also being charged for seven phone lines, when there were only two authorised numbers. Ms Corral is also accusing Nieves GP, who had worked at the Embassy since 1995, of forging her signature on accounting documents, meaning that criminal proceedings should follow. State lawyers want to extend the investigation to the years between 2009 and 2012.
The Audit Court points to what it calls “the clear absence of any oversight” at the Embassy as a determining factor in the “recurring diversion of public money”. Meanwhile, Nieves GP denies having forged her superior’s signature, saying that many of the payments were made with cheques made out to specific beneficiaries, meaning she could not have benefited personally. She also denies having admitted to her guilt. But after the preliminary inquiry, the case will go to trial.

Labour market reform a crucial Election issue THE insecurity and turnover of jobs, sparked by the 2012 labourmarket reform, has increased the number of occupational accidents in Spain.
The number of slipups at work, registered in the country during the first half of this year grew by almost 7% against the same 2014 period. There were 218,019 “minor” accidents reported, - 13,577 more than the first half of 2014, along with 1,593 “serious” accidents. That total was just one more than that period last year, and 239 fatal accidents which, sadly, was 16 more. Pedro J. Linares, Occupation Health and Environment Secretary for the CCOO trade union confederation, said: “The reform has made dismissals cheaper, weakened trade-union bargaining -power and slackened investment in occupational health and safety. “When people come and go from a company, there is no training. Turnover is very high, as is job insecurity.” He added: “The increased workload , linked to the rate of unemployment and the change in the models of employment and labour relations, are fuelling increased job insecurity and turnover. “When 25% of contracts last for less than seven days, there is little scope for occupational safety training.” In 2012, Eurostat placed Spain in the bottom group in terms of occupational risk-prevention in the EU. But Linares recalls that the 2009 Law on Occupational Risk Prevention was “a great step forward as, prior to that, we were at twice the European average. “But the crisis and unemployment have driven reforms that are fuelling a surge in accidents in all sectors, outstripping economic growth.” A woman called R.A. (she wishes to remain anonymous) is among
those suffering from what are classed as “over-exertion accidents”. When pressed by the crisis, she worked as a waitress in a restaurant in central Madrid which was open all day. “Rather than having the two days off a week established in the collective agreement, we had only one, and we would often work 10 hours in a row,” she said. “We wouldn’t even take the 30-minute break, and we would often eat standing up, even leaning on the rubbish bin.” She developed plantar fasciitis (a debilitating foot disorder) from spending so many hours on her feet. It was left untreated, which led her into a state of severe depression. “I was signed off work for two weeks and was prescribed anti-depressants, when what I needed was to rest,” she said. “We were already exploited in the restaurant trade before the crisis, but now it’s worse.” The Unión Sindical Obrera (USO) underlines in its Precarious Employment Kills report that “it is not by chance that the change in trend, increasing occupational accidents, came about in 2013, a year after the reform took effect”. The Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT) also reflects these developments in its recentlypublished report, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Law on Occupational Risk Prevention. A report by the State Working Conditions Observatory (OECT) points out that workers employed through temporary employment agencies are the most vulnerable to workplace accidents, and their number on the labour market has been rising constantly since 2012. Already in 2012, before the reform was approved, the OECT reported that the main causes of fatal work accidents were “unsuitable working methods, sub-standard protection, the lack of employee training and informa-
tion, and the non-identification of risks”. This was what happened to N.M. She had been working for just three months as a receptionist at a public centre run by the Madrid Regional Government for people with learning disabilities. One morning she went to close the sliding door for vehicle access. “I did it manually because the mechanism wasn’t working,” she said. “It came off the rail, fell on top of me and pushed me to the floor. The company reacted quite well, but it was a safety deficiency. “The door was fixed after my accident, but I notified UGT’s Health and Safety Department so that it would keep an eye out. They shouldn’t only repair it but check it from time to time.” She is suffering from inflammation of the sternum and ribs, as well as nerve damage to the hand. But she
was lucky. Two workers died in June, crushed by a rolling shutter while working at the El Tapiado industrial estate in Murcia. In its 2014 Annual Report, the Public Prosecutions Service notes the increase in sentences related to occupational accident. And it urges the Government to set up specialised tribunals to provide a “rapid response” to these offences, given that the average time lag between the incident and the court decision now stands at six to eight years. In 2014, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Spanish Government amended the Law on Mutual Insurance Societies for Occupational Accidents and Disease, increasing their influence on the leave procedures related to accidents at work. This September, the Government proposed a Royal Decree to give companies with low ac-
cident rates a discount of between 5-10% in the contributions paid to cover occupational risks, by way of an incentive. But the trade unions do not share the Government’s view, the CCOO saying: “We are against the proposal. We still have no data on how the current contribution system is working, and we don’t think it would be responsible to change it. “The reduction in contributions will only benefit big companies and the mutual societies, which report the occupational accidents and diseases. “Since it is they who manage which companies are entitled to the bonus, and since they receive 10% of it, in line with an agreement with the company, we think it will encourage the non-declaration of accidents.” Spain’s Institute for Health and Safety at
Work (INSHT) has, in fact, warned that it could “encourage the under-declaration of accidents”, while the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate (ITSS) has complained of the “limited scope for action with regard to the management of the bonus”. The UGT, for its part, believes this proposal “reinforces a course of action taken by the Government, which has neither reduced the rate of accidents, nor established preventative measures to avoid accidents at work. “It is only serving to finance companies, through the reduction of social security contributions.” With a month to go until the 20th December General Election in Spain, repealing or reinforcing the 2012 labour market reform will be one of the most crucial electoral debates.
Thousands in Canaries hit by eating disorders AT least 80,000 Canarians suffer with serious eating disorders, which demonstrates that everyday eating can become a real drama for many people, as demonstrated by this latest Canary Islands figure.
They were provided by the Eating Disorders Unit of the University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC) and Tenerife’s Association for the Liberation of Anorexia and Bulimia (ALABENTE), an archipelago pioneer in the psychological treatment and dietary affected by these diseases. Nieves Santolaria, co-ordinator of the Psychological Area of Alabante, said it was extremely difficult to talk about numbers,
because “eating disorder diseases are difficult to detect”. She added: “There are many people who suffer, and they are unknown to us. There are others who are listed as recovered and returned to relapse - and, conversely, patients who apparently never recovered when, in fact, they did.” Between 0.5% and1% of the Canary Islands
population suffer from anorexia nervosa; between 3% and 5%, bulimia nervosa; and between 5% and 10%. including children, adolescents and adults, would be affected by other, unspecified eating disorders. This adds up to least 80,000 people suffering in the archipelago from these conditions, which, said psychologist Santolaria, was more common in chil-
dren aged between 14 and 15, and young people between 20 and 25 years. Most of these disorders originate in youngsters aged between 12 and 14, and last year her unit saw 2,500 consultations, of which 200 were new. “The percentage has been increasing over the years and each time at earlier ages,” she said.

Catalonia’s enormous ‘independent’ setback MADRID’S Constitutional Court has blocked Catalonia’s move towards independence by preventing its planned 18-month process of forming a breakaway state.
It followed an angry appeal by the Spanish Government against what Ministers described as the “destruction” of the Spanish nation. As expected, Spain’s highest law-makers allowed its appeal against the Catalan Parliament’s launch of a unilateral secession process, which will be suspended until a final ruling. But under controversial new powers granted to the Constitutional Court, Catalan officials, including their defiant, pro-independence President Artur Mas, could be removed from office if they disobey
the judges’ decision. In a potential escalation of the tense stand-off, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy requested that Mas - and 20 other senior Catalan officials - should be personally informed of the court freeze on fresh independence measures. It also emerged that the Chief Public Prosecutor in Spain’s High Court instructed Catalonia’s police force to report instances of sedition and rebellion against authority, which carry jail sentences of between 10 and 30 years. After an extraordinary Cabinet meeting regarding the Government’s appeal, Rajoy attacked Catalan lead-

ers who wished to “end democracy and the rule of law” by ignoring constitutional limits. The PM said, forcefully: “This is something we cannot allow. I will not allow it. He told Cabinet Ministers that the appeal was being presented to protect the rights of Spaniards to decide their destiny as a nation. “Democracy is being undermined; everything is being undermined,” he added. “They are playing with feelings and rights of Spaniards - and the love they feel for a country, which some people want to destroy.”. Rajoy also defended his refusal to bend on
the Catalan issue during his four years as Spain’s leader, which has drawn considerable criticism. He said he had been right to refuse to negotiate a new financing deal for the region as it would have meant less distribution of money from the wealthy northeastern region to poorer parts of Spain. He also said he had a responsibility to stand up to the Catalan Government’s defiance of existing laws, such as last year’s attempt to hold a referendum on independence. But Pedro Sánchez, who leads Socialist Party, Spain’s main opposition, accused Rajoy of contributing to the impasse through “inaction and immobility”. Pablo Iglesias, leader of the Left-wing Podemos, said the Government’s appeal was “cowardly” and promised a binding referendum in Catalonia if he became Prime Minister after Spain’s 20th December General Election.
ISRAEL Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and five former Government officials, could be arrested if they set foot in Spain.
The Latin-American Herald Tribune reports that Spanish National Court Judge Jose de la Mata has ordered the police and Guardia Civil to inform him if they enter the country because it could lead to a case against them regarding the 2010 Freedom Flotilla attack being reopened. The other men, no longer in the Government. are Defence Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Leiberman, Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Yaalon, Interior Minister Eli Yishai and Benny Begin, Minister without Portfolio, together with Vice-Admiral Eliezer Marom, in charge of the operation. The case, put on hold
by Judge de la Mata last year, was brought against the men following an attack by Israeli security forces against the Freedom Flotilla aid ships in 2010, trying to reach Gaza. The six ships were carrying around 500 passengers, humanitarian aid and construction materials. But the case concerns the Mavi Marmara ship, the main civilian vessel in the fleet of six, which tried to break an Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli Defence Force stormed the ship in a raid that left nine Human Rights activists dead. A 10th activist died later that month through wounds sustained in the raid. Emmanuel Nachshon, an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson, told the Jerusalem Post: “We consider it to be a provocation. We are working with the Spanish authorities to get it cancelled. We hope it will be over soon.”

The ‘Blood rain’ puzzles experts IT looked as though residents had painted the towns red in the Spanish province of Zamora in the autumn - well, at least the fountains and water tanks.
But despite suggestions on Twitter that it was a Halloween prank or a Biblical plague, It was actually caused by microalgae. The so-called “blood rain”, which had been seen before, was even described in Homer’s Iliad. And while experts have now identified the algae species, they have no idea where it came from. Scientists, who found that a microalgae called Haematococcus pluvialis was responsible for turning the Zamora fountains red, are unsure how the North American species arrived in Spain. They believe the algae became “stressed”•, because of a change in salinity, and they know it is used in the pharmaceutical, food and even car industries. But they are none the wiser as to how it selected Zamora to make its red-blooded debut in Spain. Last year, residents of Fuente Encalada were astonished to see water in white basins around the village had turned red, with some fearing that contaminants could have been dumped from airplanes. News travelled to the neighbouring village, Ayoó de Vidriales, where one resident, Joaquín Pérez, decided to collect rainwater in order to monitor this phenomenon over the course of both last autumn and last winter. Experts at the University of Salamanca found small particles along the edges, and at the bottom of the containers, which were staining the water red. Javier FernándezLozano, geologist and co-author of the study, said: “The reddish staining is caused by Haematococcus pluvia-
lis, a freshwater green microalgae, capable of synthesising a red carotene pigment called astaxanthin when in a state of stress.” Haematococcus pluvialis is the algae responsible for ‘blood rain’ in Spain. The algae makes water look red because it can synthesise a red carotene pigment called astaxanthin when stressed. During some stages of its development, the algae can move using flagella - a whip-like structure used by cells - while during others, they can form cysts if conditions are unfavourable, turning them red. When cysts form in the presence of sunlight, their red colour is more visible against white backgrounds, such as the village fountains. The microalgae has previously been found in North America and along the Atlantic coast of Europe. But experts aren’t sure where it came from in Spain, which means it may have travelled across the Atlantic. Until now, this microalgae has been found only in bodies of water in the North America and along the European
Atlantic coast. This find is the first in what’s known as a “peri-Mediterranean” climate. “What is interesting is that we have confirmed that this species does not appear in Sanabria Lake or in the reservoirs surrounding the village of Ayoó de Vidriales, so they must be coming from some other place,” said Dr Fernández-Lozano. But where that is, remains a mystery, according to the study published in the Spanish Royal Society of Natural History Journal. The algae is thought to have been transported by clouds and fell to earth in rain. In a bid to find out where the species travelled from, the researchers studied meteorological data, especially wind patterns, corresponding to the “blood rain” days. While they found a connection to prevailing westerly winds that would have affected the north-western area of the Iberian Peninsula during the 2014 autumn, the experts were unable to identify the exact source of these micro-organisms.

Chronics smokers
beware THE Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the fourthworst cause of death worldwide, and smoking is the main cause of its development. However, this complex disease is largely unknown to the public and is the worst-treated in terms of resources from the public health system. This has been confirmed to the press by several experts, who say that in the Canaries, “COPD affects more than 48,000 smokers, of which 70% are still undiagnosed”. And to coincide with World Day of the Sick, on 11th February, some
pharmacies here will provide information on COPD prevention and care tips. Respiratory disease is the fourth-worst cause of death worldwide, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts that by 2030, it will cause 7.8% of all deaths - and 27% of deaths related to tobacco, surpassed by cancer (33%) only and cardiovascular disease (29%). Similarly, the cost of COPD in Spain is estimated between 750 and 1,000 million euros per year, distributed in hospital costs (40-45%), drugs (35-40%) and visits and diagnostic tests (15-25 %).
Ireland gives go-ahead for gay couples to wed SAME-SEX marriage is now legal in the Republic of Ireland following new legislation, which was introduced on Monday. The law was passed after a May referendum, when the Irish Republic became the first in the world to legalise samesex civil marriage by popular vote. It is not yet known when and where the first same-sex wedding will be held. But the first people to celebrate are same-sex couples who have already wed legally abroad. Their marriages are now recognised by the state automatically. They include Orla Howard and her wife, Dr Grainne Courtney, who were married in the US in May 2013. The couple have been in a relationship for 13 years and live in Dublin with their two grown-up daughters, Claire and Daire. “It’s a terrific moment, because our marriage will now be the same as any straight couple’s marriage,•” said Orla. “It brings all of the rights and protections that marriage brings, from the constitutional point of view, to our family, and that’s one of the key things for us.” Same-sex couples, seeking to wed for the
first time, can now do, but who will make legal history in a Republic of Ireland ceremony? The first newly-weds are likely to be couples who have already applied to register a civil partnership, and who now have the option to convert this into a marriage application for the same date. Registrars have been contacting couples who fall into this category to find out their preferences. People already in a civil partnership in the Republic can now also choose get married, but they must give at least five days’ notice to a civil registration office. Civil partners who don’t want to get married will remain as civil partners, and their legal status will not be affected by the new law. But new applications for civil partnerships are no longer being accepted. The Marriage Act 2015 applies to civil marriage only, and no Irish church or religious organisation, which objects to the new law, will be forced to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies. The Catholic Church and other Christian organisations campaigned against the legislation, arguing that marriage should be between a man and woman only.

Two airport workers held after Russian plane crash
EGYPTIAN authorities have arrested two workers at Sharm el Sheikh International Airport over the bombing of Metrojet Flight 9268.
Russia has confirmed that it was caused by an “act of terrorism”, and Egyptian security officials say 17 people have been detained following the 31st October attack, which killed all 224 passengers. Only two are suspected of providing direct assistance to those who planted a bomb aboard the Russian airliner, which crashed in the Sinai Peninsula soon after take-off. The arrests followed confirmation by the Federal Security Ser-
vice (FSB) that it was treating the crash as a terror strike, targeting Russian nationals. American and British intelligence have long suggested the crash was caused by terrorists, a member of an investigation team saying they were “90% sure” that a noise heard on the black box was a bomb. Russia has offered a £33m reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible. It has also boosted its attacks on IS positions in Syria, with a US official saying Moscow is conducting strikes using sea-launched cruise missiles and long-range bombers. France launched a wave of air-strikes on the IS stronghold of Raqqa after French President Francois Hollande said the nation
was at war with the Islamist extremists. Alexander Bortnikov, the head of the FSB, spoke with President Vladimir Putin to reveal details of the Russian investigation into the crash. “We have carried out investigations of the plane fragments and the luggage,” he said. “We found traces of a foreign-made explosive device - an improvised explosive device. “An equivalent of up to one 1.5kg of TNT went off during the flight. As a result the plane disintegrated in mid-air, which explains widely-scattered fuselage pieces.” He added: “I can, therefore, unequivocally say that this was an act of terrorism.” Mr Putin described the disaster as a “barbarian” terror attack,
perpetrated on Russian citizens, and added: “The killing of our people in the Sinai Peninsula is one of the bloodiest crimes. “We are not going to wipe tears from our souls and our hearts. This will remain with us forever, but this will not prevent us from finding and punishing the criminals. We should be looking for them, no matter how much time passes. “We need to know them by their names. We will find them, wherever they are, and we will punish them.” Thousands of Britons were stuck at the popular holiday resort in the wake of the attack as the UK and several other countries suspended flights over security concerns. But by Tuesday evening, they had returned home.
Madam Cyn’s brothel was magnet for vicars CYNTHIA Payne, the colourful, former brothel keeper who became the toast of the town, has died aged 82. Known as “Madame Cyn”, she achieved notoriety in 1978 when police raided a “sex party” at her Streatham home in south London, which was, she said, “in full swing”. She wrote on her website many years later: “For months afterwards, the media would write about queues of middle-aged and elderly men waiting to exchange their
‘luncheon vouchers’ for food, drink, friendly chat, striptease shows, and a trip upstairs with the girl of their choice. “Vicars, MPs and lawyers were among those who considered me to be the best hostess in London. “When the case came to court in 1980, I was sent to prison for 18 months for running ‘the biggest disorderly house’ in history. “But on appeal, this was reduced to six months, and a hefty fine for running a brothel.”
In a second trial in 1987, Cynthia was acquitted of controlling prostitutes and told newspapers: “This is a victory for common sense. But I have to admit that all this has put me off having parties for a bit.” Her colourful life inspired two films, both released in 1987: Wish You Were Here, based on her childhood and starring Emily Lloyd as a fictionalised version of her, and Personal Services, starring Julie Walters. Family friend Kevin Horkin said: “She was
a person with a very big heart. She is someone who epitomised the phrase ‘what you saw is what you got’. “Her beliefs, however, shone through strongly in the campaigning activity she was involved with in order to change Britain’s sex laws. “She publicised the issue when she stood for Parliament on two occasions, in the Kensington and Chelsea byelection of 1988, and in the General Election of 1992 in Streatham.” He added: “She will be very sorely missed by all who knew her.”

Self-drive car nicked
AMERICAN police pulled over a self-driving Google car - because it was going too slowly!
An officer stopped the prototype vehicle
in Mountain View, California, on Thursday as it travelled 24mph in a 35mph zone, causing a back-up of traffic. The police department said in a blog post: “As the officer approached the slow-moving car, he realised it was a Google
The grub for you?
FLIES, crickets and beetles could soon be offered as an essential part of Spanish cuisine as part of a new regulation by the European Parliament. Sources at the EU’s health ministry suggest that Spain will legalise the cultivation of insects for human
consumption in line with the edict. And the crunchy grubs are nutritious, healthy and good for the environment, says the EU. The law is scheduled to be brought in next year, but they won’t be holding their breath in the country’s many tapas bars.
Autonomous Vehicle. “The officer stopped the car and made contact with the operators to learn more about how the car was choosing speeds along certain roadways, and to educate the operators about impeding traffic.” Undaunted, Google says its cars have notched up 1.2 million miles of self-driving. And the Google SelfDriving Car Project said the prototype vehicles had a maximum speed of 25mph for “safety reasons”. It said in a blog post: “We want them to feel friendly and approachable, rather than zooming scarily through neighbourhood streets.”
And that’s a Fact! It can be daunting living in a foreign country because things are done differently, and of course there´s the little matter of the language! Sometimes all you need is a bit of advice, to be pointed in the right direction, or to be given some minor help with the admin side of things.
That´s why Sue McDonald has set up the Free Advice Centre Tenerife in Las Chafiras, offering a proper location for face to face confidential advice. “I´m not a gestor or a lawyer”, Sue explains, “but having been in business on the island for more than 25 years, I can help with a lot of those niggling issues. All consultations are free and if you do need referring to someone more qualified, that referral is also free. Fortunately I´ve developed lots of contacts over the years, and I only work with people I know and trust” “People who are just moving to the island often genuinely don’t know where to start, and getting advice from someone in the pool bar isn’t also a great idea because things change so quickly here. So we have all the information available for them, from NIEs to buying a house or a car, how to get internet and where they need to register. Equally, many residents just don’t have the time to sort out their own paperwork and issues, particularly if they are moving house or busy at work. Most topical issues at the moment are the property taxes for non-residents, which need to be presented by the year end, whether they rent their properties out or not, Spanish driving licences and resolving internet problems. So if you need some advice, call in to the office between 9.30 and 1.30 to see Sue McDonald at the Free Advice Centre Tenerife office at the Wheeler Dealers premises in Las Chafiras, just along from the ITV centre.

Google added: “After 1.2 million miles of autonomous driving (that’s the human equivalent of 90 years of driving experience), we’re proud to say we’ve never been ticketed!” The technology giant says its driverless vehicles are currently being tested on the streets of Mountain View and Austin, Texas. The model pulled over by the traffic cop was one of Google’s new prototype vehicles, purpose-built to be fully autonomous. And the company, which stresses there are “safety drivers” on board all test vehicles, plans to make these cars available to the public by 2020.
It’s just like Police Academy!
A TOTAL of 244 candidates passed the first fitness test of the selection process to enlist 20 people as local police officers in Santa Cruz. But it was hardly an Olympic-style examination. Some 330 people, of the 548 who had enrolled, turned up. And of the 244 candidates who passed the first test, 210 were men and 34 women. The test was (and we are not joking), the running horizontal jump,
which required men to reach a minimum mark of 2.20 metres and the women a minimum 2m. For men, the best validated jump was 2.80m and for women, 2.27m. Eight-six failed the test: 39 men and 47 women! The second round of tests is on Monday, when the new recruits must show they can perform a certain number of press-ups! Don’t hold your breath!

Franco’s fearful regime triggers justice petition
Alf Garnett’s final farewell ALF GARNETT is no longer with us. Actor Warren Mitchell, famous for playing the outspoken cockney in TV’s much-loved Till Death Us Do Part comedy series, has died at the age of 89. His family said: “Sadly we can confirm Warren Mitchell died in the early hours of Saturday, 14th November 14, surrounded by his family. He has been in poor health for some time, but was cracking jokes to the last.” In contrast to his bestknown role as a racist, homophobic, chauvinistic bigot, though, Mitchell was, in reality, a socialist. But the series made such an impact over the years that he was still being stopped in the street 40 years on by fans, who thought he really was like Garnett. He once admitted some similarities, saying: “Opinionated male chauvinistic pig at times, I suppose. As my wife, Connie, once said to me, ‘You are like that awful Alf Garnett, only he’s funny and you’re

not’.” Comedian Ricky Gervais paid tribute to the London-born star, Tweeting: “Alf Garnett was one of the most influential and important characters and performances in comedy history. RIP Warren Mitchell.” Mitchell, who was born Warren Misell, served in the RAF and went on to read physics at University College, Oxford. He left the course early and took up acting in 1951 at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). The Alf Garnett role was his big break, and the character led to him becoming much-loved by the British public. The ardent Tottenham Hotspur fan, unlike West Ham-supporting Garnett, also appeared in Lovejoy, Waking The Dead, Kavanagh QC and Gormenghast. And, proving his acting versatility, he received critical acclaim for performances in Arthur Miller’s classic Death Of A Salesman and Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker.
THE Canarian Association of Victims of Franco (ACVF) has this week petitioned the Argentina Embassy in Madrid about 1,800 cases of Canarians killed during the Franco regime.
It followed the July 1936 coup d’etat against the Republican government, and, of the deceased, 400 were from La Palma and 65 from Tenerife. They were condemned to death in a martial court, said Association secretary Tavo de Armas.
The petitioners want the list of victims included in the open inquiry into Francisco Franco’s regime, promoted by Argentine lawyer Ana Messuti, which is part of the investigation in Buenos Aires. The ACVF asks the Argentina Justice system to consider all the facts and to quash the sentences, even though the perpetrators are already dead. De Armas said: “It is
unfortunate to have to go to a foreign country to investigate these crimes, as the Spanish National Court considers these matters closed.” Simon Concepcion, the ACVF lawyer, told a Gran Canaria press conference that his complaint “identifies, with full names, the people involved or complicit in the crimes of the Franco regime in the Canary Islands community.”
He added: “They were barely punished by what happened in the Civil War, and the subsequent repression was terrible.” Francisco Gonzalez, the ACVF President whose grandfather was shot, has published a book, and he says: “I want this to be the voice of all those killed with impunity for defending democratic legality.” Hundreds of thousands died on both sides of Spain’s 19361939 Civil War. And, according to British historian Paul Preston’s book, “The Spanish Holocaust”, the Franco victors went on to execute thousands of people after the war ended.
FRANCO MUST GO! SANTA Cruz Councillor Ramon Trujillo has expressed his bewilderment at the lack of response from the Government’s Traffic department to the question posed by the Mayor on why there are still so many references to Franco, the country’s former dictator.
The Councillor has written a direct letter
to Carlos Garcinuño, head of the department, and was told that Traffic does not believe it has the jurisdiction to start removing Franco’s name from the streets. Trujillo denounced the neglect on this issue,
saying: “In Santa Cruz there are 103 streets with names related to the Franco period and only eight have been modified, leaving more than 90 tracks, streets and bridges with Franco names.
“What we propose is a democratic normalisation,” he said. “Just as in Germany, where there are no monuments in honour of Adolf Hitler or his rise to power, neither should there be any with the dictator Francisco Franco. “The Law of Historical Memory is mandatory for all municipalities in the state, so it is necessary to relocate these monuments elsewhere, or destroy them.” Trujillo requested this law be activated, but Ciudamos Councillor Reyes Dorta defended the survival of the monument because “it is art”.
It’s Nuts to lads’ mags! SO-CALLED lads’ mags Zoo and FHM will close down at the end of the year, despite both publications attracting a digital audience of over five million.
Publisher Bauer Media made the decision following a shift in habits towards online media. But men’s lifestyle brands have been under threat anyway, resulting in last year’s
closure of Nuts, which was Zoo’s closest rival. Bauer’s statement said: “Over time, young men’s media habits have continually moved towards mobile and social.” The company told Sky News that a period of consultation was underway, and it was unclear at this stage whether there was any threat of staff redundancy. The current editor of both titles took charge in July, having previously run Nuts, and publisher Ga-
reth Cherriman said: “I greatly appreciate Damien McSorley’s leadership and the dedication and effort from both teams. “I would like to thank our advertisers and retailers who have supported the brands, and I’m sure that everyone who has worked on FHM and Zoo over the years will be sorry to hear this news.” The FHM mag, first known in 1985 as For Him Magazine, dominated the men’s market in the Nineties before competition grew
more fierce. It was, perhaps, best known for its”’100 Sexiest Women in the World” poll. Nuts, owned by IPC Media, was joined in magazine combat by Zoo in 2004. And though Nuts always had a sales advantage over its rival, business fell away after 2007 when the financial crisis set in. There was also additional pressure placed on publishers to tone down their sexual content ... especially on front covers!

More pensions’ jargon-busting
of Blacktower Financial Management (International) Limited.
THIS week I’m focusing solely on the jargon and, hopefully, it will help you understand what the terms mean? If you´re still not sure, please contact us! Annual allowance The maximum savings made into a pension, based on your own and any employer contributions, that you can have in a year before you have to start paying tax on them. In the tax year 2015-16, the annual allowance is £40,000. If you’re not earning, you can still get tax relief on savings up to £3,600 a year. Annuity An Annuity is a type of retirement income that provides you with a regular payment, usually for life. Flexi-access drawdown This enables you to withdraw any amount of income from your
pension scheme without restrictions, while leaving the pot invested. You can take 25% as a tax-free lump sum when you first decide you want to go into drawdown, but there may be exit charges. Guaranteed annuity rate (GAR) A competitive, guaranteed income offered by some pension schemes if you take a lifetime annuity out with them - often hard to match if shopping around.
Guaranteed drawdown This is a “hybrid” product that combines a guaranteed income for life, with the flexibility of drawdown. Income drawdown It allows you to draw an income from your pension scheme, while leaving the pot invested. Lifetime allowance The maximum value of pension savings you can build up without incurring a tax charge when you draw out your savings as cash or pensions (and without leaving a tax charge for
your beneficiaries if you die before age 75) Market value reduction A reduction to your pension pot that could apply if you want to cash in your with-profits policy before or after its maturity date, or other date(s) specified in the policy. Money Purchase Annual Allowance (MPAA) The maximum pension savings you can get tax relief for each year after you have taken money out of your pension pot as cash, either as a small cash sum (see
Uncrystallised Funds Pension Lump Sum), or have started taking income from flexiaccess drawdown, or flexible annuity which will decrease. Tax-free lump sum A sum of cash set by law that you can take at retirement, free of tax. It’s usually up to 25% of your pension. It’s sometimes referred to simply as “tax-free cash” or “cash lump-sum”. Uncrystallised Pension Fund This is a pension pot that has not been
accessed for retirement income. Uncrystallised Funds Pension Lump Sum (UFPLS) It is a cash sum taken from a pension pot that has not paid out any retirement income. For each withdrawal before the age of 75, the first 25% will be taxfree and the rest will be taxed at your highest tax rate. The above does not constitute advice; you must seek clarification from a tax adviser regarding your personal tax situation. Northern Rock home-owners safe, despite sales to US firm
THE British Government’s decision to sell loans worth billions to an American private investment company will affect 125,000 home-owners.
Mortgage borrowers with failed bank Northern Rock will receive letters telling them that the companies behind their mortgages have changed, with 34,000 going to TSB - now owned by Spain’s Banco de Sabadell - and the remaining 91,000 in the hands of US private investment firm Cerberus Capital. The latter takes its
name from the mythological three-headed dog that guards the gates of hell. But personal finance experts do not believe there is reason for borrowers to fear that the New Yorkbased company will try to squeeze more from the assets, or ramp up repossessions. These mortgages will continue to be serviced by UK Asset Resolution, the body which has managed them on the Government’s behalf since Northern Rock’s bail-out. Experts say the deals remain subject to the auspices of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), with strict rules on forbearance - giving borrowers a chance
when they are struggling to meet repayments. Meanwhile, UKAR said the terms and conditions of the mortgages would not change. It added that a key consideration in selecting the bidder was the fair treatment of custom-
ers - though neither Cerberus nor UKAR would specify what this meant. But why would Cerberus want to buy these loans if it does not plan to squeeze them? The company did not comment about the commercial rationale
behind the deal, but there are other reasons why it might see these mortgages as attractive assets. Ray Boulger, senior technical manager at independent mortgage broker John Charcol, said most of those borrowers who still had old Northern Rock loans were likely to be paying interest rates of 4.79% - far higher than deals currently on the market. This results in a chunky profit margin for the lender, - which will be able to finance the loan book much more cheaply in the current low interestrate environment. Since they have not switched to a rival com-
pany, these customers are also more likely to be “sticky” - less inclined to move to another lender - and this will not necessarily be because they find it difficult to pay. It could be because their remaining loans are small, because they are interest-only or because they self-certified their income for the purposes of obtaining their loans. Mr Charcol said he did not think borrowers had anything to worry about. “If the Government hadn’t made sure that the sale terms require lenders to treat customers fairly, they would have been under all sorts of criticism,” he said.

Tomorrow’s
Food
Don't Miss...
Monday 23rd November, BBC1, 21.00 Tomorrow’s Food shows viewers the fascinating future of food: from field, through to the aisles of the supermarket, to our dining tables. Led by Dara O Briain, this series will reveal the cutting-edge technologies and produce appearing in farms, supermarkets, kitchens and restaurants around the world, transforming how we grow, buy and eat our food. The world’s population may be growing, but we’re coming up with ingenious solutions to ensure the future of our breakfasts, lunches and dinners. In this first episode Dara O Briain visits Thanet Earth (pictured), the hi-tech greenhouse farm in Kent that grows millions of fruit and vegetables throughout the year - and all without any soil. Dara meets the technical team behind the farm where everything is controlled: the light, the temperature and even the insects. Dara then heads to Texas where they’ve had five years of drought and are using a technique called ‘cloud seeding’: releasing a small amount of chemicals from a plane to produce rain, enough to supply a city the size of San Francisco. Dara will also experiment with digital tastes, delivered through a receptor on your tongue. Could we be close to emailing flavours to our friends? Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett meets the scientists in the US Army kitchens who are creating food which can stand the test of time and could hold the secret to the end of the sell-by date. Angela also tries out the talking frying pan that promises to help you cook the perfect meal every time. Greengrocer Chris Bavin is at an Australian farm that’s replacing farmers with robots, from ones that herd cows to flying drones that keep an eye on your crops. Chris then tries out a seaweed pill that could stop your body from absorbing some of the fat in your diet. Determined to put this to the test, Chris gathers together a group of truck drivers with a fatty diet to see if this pill could really work for them - with astonishing results. Technology expert Dr Shini Somara visits the hi-tech restaurants of Shanghai to see robot waiters in action and enjoys a multi-sensory eating experience, where everything you see, smell, hear and taste is controlled by the restaurant. Shini will also investigate whether the ‘Miracle Berry’ lives up to its name can it transform the sourest of flavours into something deliciously sweet?

Adele At The BBC BBC1, 20.30
For BBC One, BBC Music brings Adele At The BBC, a world-exclusive entertainment show hosted by Graham Norton. In this one-off, hour-long special, Adele will perform classic tracks as well as songs from her eagerly awaited new album ‘25’, accompanied by her live band, as well as chat to Graham about her career and life to date. It will be Adele’s first television performance since she performed ‘Skyfall’ at the 85th Academy Awards in February 2013, where she won Best Original Song for the theme tune to the 23rd James Bond film. Adele says: “I can’t wait for the show. The BBC has been wonderful to me over the years and Graham and I get on great so it’s going to be a laugh.” Graham Norton says: “This is the music event of the year and I’m thrilled to be part of bringing it to BBC One. This opportunity to spend an hour with Adele, her music and her stories is a truly rare treat. If I wasn’t hosting this special I’d be sat at home watching it!” The BBC has supported Adele since the beginning of her career. Her first ever play was ‘Daydreamer’ on Reggie Yates’ BBC Radio 1 show. ‘Hometown Glory’ was first played on the radio by Zane Lowe on Radio 1 in 2007 and she made her debut television performance on Later with Jools Holland on BBC Two in the same year, performing ‘Daydreamer’.

The Hunt: Oceans Hunger At Sea
20th November - 26th November 2015
S unday
BBC1, 21.00
The open ocean is an immense wilderness that covers more than half the surface of our planet, yet for the most part it’s a watery desert, largely devoid of life. Food is incredibly scarce and very widely spread so hunters have to travel great distances in their search for prey. And even when they find food, catching it presents a whole new set of challenges. Open ocean hunters are highly specialised to survive in the big blue, none more so than the blue whale, our planets greatest hunter. But how is it possible for the biggest animal that has ever lived to survive in an ocean desert? The blue whale’s giant size holds the key. Another remarkable ocean hunter is the frigate bird: their feathers aren’t waterproof so they rarely, if ever, land on water - yet they manage to hunt at sea. Instead Frigates rely on dorado - predatory oceanic fish - to force flying fish from of the water, and once in the air the frigate birds take flying fish on the wing. Sharks, sea lions, spinner dolphins, albatross and the characterful sargassum fish have all developed extraordinary ways to hunt in the open ocean.
Sophia: Suffragette Princess BBC1, 13.15 In the week when Sikhs across the world are celebrating the birth of their founder, Guru Nanak, BBC Political journalist Anita Anand tells the fascinating and largely unknown story of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh - descendent of Sikh Royalty, Goddaughter of Queen Victoria and pioneering suffragette. Bold and fearless, Princess Sophia marched alongside Emmeline Pankhurst in protest outside Parliament, refused to pay her taxes until women got the vote and even threw herself in front of Prime Minister Asquith’s car.

Antiques Roadshow BBC1, 20:00
The Antiques Roadshow returns to Walmer Castle, near Deal in Kent, where treasures include a rare enamel racing car sign, an art deco mask that frightens its owner’s children and a jacket worn by JFK that could be one of the most valuable items seen on the show in recent years. Ceramics specialist Fergus Gambon suspects that an empire-style vase with a Sevres factory mark isn’t quite what it seems. There’s a surprise for Clive Farahar when the owner of a letter said to be from Nelson reveals the contents of a small box with a profound connection to her late husband. Marc Allum is thrilled to see a collection of post-war Italian design classics, from red a plastic Valentine typewriter to a foldup lamp that had a tendency to melt, while oriental specialist Lee Young is intrigued by two vases and a statue that belongs to a family who once ran a travelling circus.

Relaxed, inspiring and as mouthwatering as ever, Nigella Lawson’s latest series shows us that what and how we cook really can make us feel better and more alive. This episode focuses on ensuring a cosy and comforting vibe. Breakfast is a tray of cheering chai muffins - light, luscious and dairy-free. For a low-key lunch, there are Nigella’s Asian-flavoured short ribs - a perfect make-ahead, meltingly tender beef stew. And friends are in for an informal supper with Nigella’s fish tacos. Inspired by her visits to Tacoria’s on America’s west coast, Nigella’s homemade, oven-baked version involves a bit of DIY at the table, ensuring a laid-back atmosphere for guests and host alike. The tacos are followed by a divine salted chocolate tart for pudding.

Kate Quilton and Dave Fishwick investigate two of life’s bigger outlays: diamonds, which according to the marketing campaigns are ‘forever’; and funerals, which are most definitely forever. Dave heads off to Tel Aviv, one of the world’s biggest diamond trading centres, to try to get a good deal on a rock and to find out if diamonds are as good an investment as they’re cracked up to be. Kate looks into how much value a brand new box-fresh diamond loses when you leave the shop. And closer to home, she investigates the prices of the big name funeral chains, as well as discovering how a swimming pool in Redditch is kept warm by the heat from a crematorium. Also, Dave explores the cost of organising your own DIY burial.

Vernon Kay is back to host a brand new series of 1000 Heartbeats. Every contestant start their game with 1000 Heartbeats. As they play each of the seven rounds, their heart rate is monitored and every single beat of their heart makes one of their 1000 Heartbeats disappear. The aim is to get through as many rounds as their heartbeats allow, banking cash along the way. If their heartbeats run out, they go home with nothing. Contestants battle their way through increasingly challenging rounds of general knowledge, word play and maths, whilst attempting to keep their heart rate under control. Because the quicker their heart beats, the faster their time runs out. In today’s first episode, hoping to keep calm under pressure and walk off with the £25,000 jackpot prize, are Business analyst Phil, Marketing coordinator Shirley and medical student Andrew.

Emergency! Trains vs Weather ITV1, 20.00
What does it take to keep Britain’s railway services running through some of the worst winter weather on record ? This documentary follows the army of engineers and maintenance teams as they battle against the elements to keep the rail network open and prevent the delays which cause misery to millions of passengers every winter. Using the latest technology and sheer old fashioned graft we see them tackling floods, hurricane force winds and tracks buried under 6 feet of snow not to mention the annual blight of leaves on the line. With millions depending on the trains every day the maintenance teams are the unsung heroes of the rail network battling to keep the trains running whatever the British weather throws at them.

Paul O’Grady returns to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home for eight brand new episodes of canine commotion in this award-winning series. As ever, Paul continues to bring his unique blend of humour, entertainment and fun as he helps care for dogs of all different shapes, sizes and ailments. He learns about how they ended up in the home, and is at times moved to tears by their difficult and troubled stories, which don’t always guarantee a happy ending. In this week’s episode, Paul meets with two elderly sisters, Lady and Gemma. This pair of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have spent their entire lives in each other’s company, but will they be able to find a new home together? Things then take a turn for the worse when the vets realise it’s not just a new home the ladies need, but new ears as well! Will they get through the big ops and eventually find the retirement they deserve? Next up, Paul’s greeted by an emaciated mongrel called Hector. Eight kilos underweight, his hat-rack frame means he has to be handled with extreme care in case his bones break. There’s also a complication in fattening him up, because his stomach has got so small it would be dangerous if he started scoffing down his meals. But how can you stop hungry Hector from guzzling his grub? Finally Paul meets Baloo, a beautiful Alaskan Malamute, who’s Battersea’s current longest resident. This breed of dog are particularly affectionate, social creatures and not suited to life in kennels, so mopey Baloo has got the big-time blues. However, Paul has a mission in mind that might just cheer this big dog up. Will a change of scene give Baloo the lift he needs to liven his mood and help him find a new home?

W C c hoi c e Scorpion ITV2, 21.00 In order to save the lives of three judges, Sylvester goes undercover in a federal prison but Team Scorpion must break him out when his life is threatened. Scorpion is inspired by a true story - its a high-octane drama about eccentric genius Walter O’Brien (played by Elyes Gabel) and his team of brilliant misfits who are the last line of defence against complex, hightech threats of the modern age. O’Brien’s “Scorpion” team includes Toby Curtis (played by Eddie Kaye Thomas), an expert behaviourist who can read anyone, Happy Quinn (played by Jadyn Wong), a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvestor Dodd (played by Ari Stidham), a statistics guru. Pooling their extensive knowledge to solve mind boggling dramas amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo (played by Robert Patrick), who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien. However, while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other’s humour and quirks, life outside their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen (played by Katharine McPhee), who has a young gifted son, to translate the world for them. These nerdy masterminds have at last found the perfect job; a place where they can apply their exceptional brainpower to solves the nation’s crises, while also helping each other learn how to fit in.

The five-year-olds come back together after two weeks apart, and are joined by some new playmates. Time has clearly made the heart grow fonder, as Alfie and his best friend Emily reunite in a flurry of ‘I Love You!’. In the last episode Alfie struggled to empathise with some of his peers, but a powerful breakthrough during a painting competition proves a pivotal turning point for him. It’s a rollercoaster week for George, who takes the children’s rejection of his prized family recipe for ‘Essex Noodles’ to heart, but goes on to triumph in a team leadership challenge. Romance is in the air again when newcomer Sienna captures Arthur’s heart. And Arthur explains ‘you have to do a kiss on the lips to get married’, but will he get the girl?

The World’s Most Expensive Food Channel 4, 21:00
While most of us buy our food in the supermarket and millionaires use the Michelin guide, Britain’s growing number of billionaires use a private network of luxury food suppliers. This programme follows exclusive suppliers who cater to super-rich clients in a world untouched by austerity. Highend caterers Bubble Food present food as entertainment, creating a theatrical spectacle that their demanding clients will remember and talk about for years. Jori White has booked Bubble to cater at her 17th wedding anniversary party. At over £1000 per head, their service features miniature edible menus; starters adorned with edible but tastefree gold leaf; and canapés presented as a ‘woodland truffling experience’, where guests wear headphones to hear pigs oinking as they search among leaves for truffle-flavoured treats.

The price is right! By Jamie Droo TENERIFE has, for decades, been a place where workers from all walks of life can find employment all year round.
For those who choose to leave their native shores to work abroad, this small Island has always been a popular choice, especially among entertainers. Some artistes return for the winter months only, having worked in other places throughout the summer - the Abba Angels’ show, for example. These two girls ply their trade in Majorca throughout the summer, and then return here around October when the holiday season ends there. When it comes to the average fee earned by performers, there are differing economies. The Balearic Islands pay more per show than the Canary Islands. But take taxi fares - they are almost one-third dearer there for the same length of journey as here in Tenerife. And in Majorca, it is rare that an act would be able to do two or three shows, six nights a week. The venues are much more sporadic, there aren’t so many British bars and, in some cases, acts would have to travel between 30-60 minutes to the venue where they are performing. But Tenerife’s entertainment circuit in the South is very condensed, and 75% of the work available is within a small radius. That enables an act to do an early show at 10pm, and have enough time to get to another venue for a late gig. With this in mind, the economies of the Balearics and the Canaries when it comes to earning power are not that different - only the work-load changes. Entertainment is the biggest expense for our venues, which have a plethora of talent from
which to choose, and most of the bars lay on entertainment free of charge for customers. Overall, 99% of acts are paid to perform, and good artistes have the potential to earn a healthy living if they are prepared to put in the graft. This is a tough circuit to work but, if you can hack doing 12-15 shows a week, the work is here! The Tenerife acts, backbone of the entertainment scene, work tirelessly. Some say our entertainers have got it easy because they work for just two or three hours a night. Well, I would encourage those who think that way to walk a mile in their shoes. The Island singers are forever updating their shows with fresh material, and rehearsing new songs during the day. Singers such as Michael Leavy Jnr, Elaine Alexander, Hayley Butler, T2K, Mikey Mike, Lisa Bridge and Helena Campbell always seem to be performing the new, popular songs first. They can buy and download the backing tracks for these new songs in seconds these
days, but it’s impossible for them to download the words and arrangements to their brain! The only time an act wouldn’t have to put in rehearsal time for new
songs would be if that artiste were tributing a singer who had gone to the other side. Elvis and Michael Jackson haven’t come up with any new songs for a while!
All joking aside, that is just one element of an entertainer’s life away from the stage. But rehearsal is important for any act, whether or not new songs need learning. Some acts do charge a lot more than the average fee, but these artistes - a small minority - have built up a huge following and fill the venues to capacity. So it becomes financially viable for the venue to pay the extra. However, if a new act arrives on the Island with a show that packs out the venues out, he/she will undoubtedly pick up lots of work rapidly. The downside, in a lot of cases, is that other acts will be laid off to make room for the artiste, who will surely generate more revenue. That’s the nature of this business and, though it’s hard to swallow sometimes, all acts are aware of this. They just have to suck it up and try to fill the spot elsewhere. But if artistes are good at what they do, they will never be out of work. The top percentage of working acts in Tenerife have been here a
number of years, working in what are considered the best venues. Entertainers do not put their fees up every year with inflation and, actually, since the peseta was phased out to make way for the euro, their prices have not increased. In fact, the fee paid in many cases has dropped. Most venues have always paid the same price for an act, and the entertainer will work fortnightly or weekly there all year round. Respect should be given to all acts working hard on this circuit, turning up each week to do what they do. And those who stay here all year round make the circuit what it is. Tenerife receives tourists who return twice a year - every year in some cases - and most of them are here for the entertainment scene. Coming back to see the regular singers and entertainers here is as important to them as the sunshine. Those acts, like the sun, will always shine here in Tenerife. And they will always be in work because they put the graft in … and keep the price right.

By Vanessa Vee ONE of Tenerife´s hidden gems is the Monkey Park - a great value afternoon or morning out and ideal for families with young children or, in fact, any animal lovers in general.
The advantages of the Monkey Park are that it is local, affordable and ideal for a quick trip out to occupy the mind for a few hours. Located just a few minutes away from the back end of Los Cristianos, it is accessible by taxi or car quite easily. It could be walked, but I wouldn´t recommend this as there are no pavements on the latter end of the journey and it could be slightly risky because of the blind bends. On entrance, bags are

Going ape… over parrots checked, simply because staff do not want food being smuggled in for the animals. They are not humans and must adhere to a diet, but speciality food is available for purchase, should you wish. Initially, crocodiles are encountered - extremely docile ones at that. I don´t ever remember seeing them move on any of my many visits! Then there is the obligatory photograph, with parrots! Please don´t ask me why, at a Monkey Park, the photo isn´t taken with a monkey. I have no idea, but I am sure there is reasoning behind it. You will begin a trail of many different species, from marmoset to chimpanzees, to gorillas. One thing to note about this
establishment is that they do not put on shows of any type. Since opening in 1991, the park has concentrated on breeding the rare species, portraying the importance of keeping the animals in as much of a natural envi-
ronment as possible. One excellent feature is the opportunity to walk among the animals by stepping in the cages with them. This is possible with some of the monkeys, the lemurs and the giant tortoise. That you can stroll at
your leisure makes the whole experience enjoyable and relaxing. Information boards about each type of animal are displayed, too. Not only are there animals to see, but you can also have a wander through the cactus park and discover a huge array of cacti. In addition, there are reptiles on offer … personally, not my cup of tea, but it always sparks a debate on “if you were on I´m a Celebrity, Get me out of here, what creatures could you bear crawling over you”? For me, it’s the rats, mice and cockroaches. But the thought of snakes makes me shudder somewhat! We finally end up in another cage full of monkeys, very cheeky mon-
keys at that. They are so used to human contact that they hold no fear and feed from your hands willingly. Once the trail is finished, the snack bar offers a well-earned, cool, refreshing drink and washing facilities. All in all a super short trip out to suit all ages, and for those with a further interest, the park offers its own education programme. The Monkey Park is open seven days a week, from 9.30am until 5pm. And with prices at just 10 euros per adult, five euros per child (up to 12 years), with under-fives free, it really is worth a trip. Tickets can be purchased online at www. tenerifesunshine.com or call 922 751 867.

Tubby mums-to-be can lead to baby nightmare
By Val Sainsbury PILING on the extra pounds when pregnant can cause a range of problems for the baby. And nearly 50% of all expectant mums in America gain too much weight.
A US Government survey has revealed that about 30% of the women gained the recommended weight, and some 20% put on too little. Overall, though, mostly overweight and obese women exceeded the guidelines. Women do need to eat extra calories during pregnancy, although not that much - about 350-450 extra calories during the second and third trimester (the three nine-month divisions) - said Andrea Sharma, one of the study’s authors, from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
She added: “It’s not about eating twice as much but eating twice as healthily.” But how much weight mothers should gain depends on their weight when they become pregnant. Experts say those of normal weight should add 25-35lbs, overweight women should gain 15-25lbs, while obese women should add just 10-20lbs. And those unusually thin should increase their weight by about 3040lbs. Gaining too little weight increases the
risk of the baby being born very small, while too much weight can lead to obesity and other health problems for the mother. It can lead to dangerous complications during labour and delivery, and it raises the risk of the baby, later in life, becoming obese, diabetic, and have other problems A study published earlier this year, which highlighted the importance of a healthy diet during pregnancy - and beyond - confirmed these fears. As part of the study,
researchers at the University of Edinburgh followed more than 13,000 people, from birth in the Thirties and Forties until their present age. They found the placenta of mothers eating a high-fat diet offered weakened protection to the foetus against the stress hormone cortisol. This can mean a reduction in the growth of the foetus, and these offspring are more likely to suffer mood disorders in adulthood, researchers found. Other key findings related to protective caps on the end of DNA, known as telomeres. Having long telomeres protects the DNA to enable it to function and repair, while shorter telom-
eres are markers of disease and a shorter lifespan, recorded the scientists. said. They also discovered that obesity, combined with high weight-gain during pregnancy, is associated with shorter telomere length in women’s offspring, and as they get older. Project leader Dr Patricia Iozzo, of Italy’s Institute of Clinical Physiology, in Pisa, said that even if a pregnant woman were born with shorter telomeres herself, and had a high body-mass index (BMI), she could reverse the situation by being physically active and produce healthier children. Doctor Iozzo added: “The project has underlined the importance of preventing obesity in
pregnancy, preventing excess weight gain during pregnancy, and also maintaining healthy diet without too much fat. “All of this can have short and long-term effects on the health of the mother and her child. “In the context of maternal-offspring health, attention should be devoted to the prevention of overweight and obesity among young girls, representing ‘tomorrow’s mothers’.” This new research, from the CDC, involved more than three million US pregnant women during 2012 and 2013. In most of the 46 states involved, birth certificates now also record pre-pregnancy weights.
LET LUXURY GO TO YOUR HEAD By Carl Pattison
IF you want to be the main attraction this festive season, you’ll need a little help from your favourite stylist.
And with all the stores filled with luxury, party outfits, it stands to reason that you will also want your hair to feel “luxurious”. It all starts in the salon, where you must

receive a consultation before any service takes place, which will make you feel at ease. And if you’re having a cut, the last thing you want is to leave the salon with hair that’s not in its best condition. Make sure the stylist analyses it carefully to make sure it is in the best condition after your visit. Try to take home “in-salon” products and ensure that you have full knowledge of how to use them to gain full advantage. You should be pampering your hair with oils and hair masques to maintain the moisture levels. Take-away packs will ensure you have everything at hand to enable your hair to stand up to the styling it will receive through the party season. If your regular colour is looking a little fad-
ed after the summer season, make sure it’s either toned down a little, or you go for a slightly darker shade to enhance the shine factor. Avoid that overlybleached look in the winter months and try adding some “warmth” to it, so that the colour radiates. This will even give a glossy look to blonde hair, which can look unhealthy at times. I cannot over-stress the importance of taking good care of your hair, especially after what it has been through during our hot summer. Give a little back to your hair and you, too, will feel the luxury of having hair that others will talk about. All of the mentioned treatments and products are available in our salon.

The how, why and what of triathlons
of Activate Sports Club
T R I AT H L O N S are big, big business these days, more popular than they’ve ever been. But what are they? How do they work?
And, most importantly, why on earth do so many people love taking part? All those who make some feeble excuse as to why they can’t manage 30 minutes of exercise a day should hang their heads in shame. There are people among us who swim over 2km, follow it with a 40km bike ride and finish off with a 10km run - by choice, and for fun! What is a triathlon? As its name suggests, there are three disciplines: swimming, cycling and running. It’s always in that order and, although we’re not sure why, the most common theory involves getting swimming out of the way first because you wear a wetsuit and, as the triathlon continues, the bigger the risk of muscle fatigue. And fatigue or cramp in the water could lead to drowning. How do they work? There is a whole unknown world related to triathlons, which
includes several variations on different terrains and of various lengths. The short-distance event, called the sprint triathlon, is excellent for beginners. It’s usually completed in around two hours and consists of a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. The standard version comprises a 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run. And there’s even a long-distance triathlon known as Ironman (although for most of us the sprint
version seems long distance). This involves, wait for it, a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42km run, and can take anywhere between 8-17 hours to complete. Seriously, why would you? How can you? What kind of superhumans are these people? Whichever you take part in, you need to train. For hours. For weeks and months. No one simply gets out of bed and is able to do this. That’s because it
involves a huge commitment to reaching a goal, supported by professional coaches, regular check-ups and a carefully-controlled diet to make sure you give your body the necessary nourishment. You also need certain equipment, of course, like a bike, padded cycling shorts (your bum and legs will thank you for it), a helmet, a wetsuit and some very good trainers. Why do people do them? This is the million-
dollar question. People who take part in triathlons regularly speak of the incomparable satisfaction of pushing their body to the limit, and overcoming new challenges. Usually, every athlete finds one of the three activities much more demanding than the others. But as each discipline works the body’s muscle groups in a completely different way, triathletes end up becoming the fittest specimens on the planet. You don’t get to call
yourself Ironman for nothing! A combination of hard-core, cardio workouts, strength-training and correct nutrition enables you to achieve things of which you never dreamed. And hardly anyone settles at competing in just one triathlon. Rather like tattoos, chips or episodes of Game of Thrones, once you start, it’s hard to stop. The best answer to the question of why, however, is simple. Why not?

LET’S ALL BE ‘FAKE’ By Carl Pattison
IT’S nature’s way of keeping animals warm, and fur has been used since time began to protect and, sometimes, to adorn.
But gone are the days when real fur was needed to support our need for that luxurious coat of those amazing fur accessories. Fashion and its technology can produce such amazing
“fakes” that there is absolutely no need for any animal to suffer in the name of fashion. It is so difficult to spot the difference between “fake” and “real” that the fashion industry has no limits to which animals fur can be copied. And that leaves you forever wondering if it really is a good copy or the real thing. Right on-trend this season, we see in lots of stores over this festive period anything from gillets (body-warmers)
to full-fur coats, jackets edged with fur and every accessory you can imagine. Winter white is heading the trend as we also see black and chocolate-browns, all giving us that luxury look and feel without the skyhigh prices of the real thing. You can at last wear fur with pride without thinking about what suffering it has gone through to be adorning your body. But try to keep the fur
to just one item of your clothing, and don’t go for the garish top-to-toe look. Keep it classy and simple, and mix in with classic jeans or even an evening outfit. Even you guys aren’t left out because the stores are teaming with fake fur to keep you ahead of fashion this winter. It’s a timeless look, so you WILL be wearing this for some years, so choose your fun-fur wisely and look forward to digging it out year after year.

Cats Welfare News
Is Rosie the oldest cat here? ROSIE was abandoned by her owners 24 years ago when they moved away from a San Eugenio complex. How do we know she’s that old?
Because several owners on the complex have had their apartments that long and knew her when she was tiny! Did you know that a 24-yearold cat is the equivalent to 113 in human years? The apartment owners on the complex took turns to care for her and feed her throughout her life. But a couple of years ago it became apparent she needed a “retirement home”. She was becoming infirm and needed a “helping hand”. An SOS call was made to Cats Welfare and she was whisked to a cat retirement finca in the
southern hills here. Where do your donations go each month? Not only to helping cats and kittens but also to care for the old-timers who are living their days out in peace and tranquillity. A huge THANK-YOU to everyone who supports us and ensures we can look after not only kittens but also the cat community’s old-age pensioners. Note for your diary We will be holding a Charity fund-raiser at the Heads ‘n’ Tails bar in Santiago Puig, Las Americas, on Saturday, 12th December, from 2pm until 6pm. Details of acts and activities will be announced shortly, so please keep that afternoon free. A fun time is guaranteed, and that will help us raise muchneeded funds. Reach for the Sky Sky, a stunning five-
month-old tabby kitten, is longing for a home. She’ll make a lovely pet but, sadly, she doesn’t feature one of the “popular” colours and has been overlooked by prospective adopters. It’s such a shame because she has so much love to
give. Will you give her a chance? All cats and kittens are sent on a week’s trial, so you can be sure they are exactly the pet for you. Sky has already been spayed and will have a microchip, her first year’s injections and a
green health book. There are more pictures of her on our www.cats-welfare-tenerife.com/pets website, along with all the other cats we have available. There is no adoption fee and no obligation, although a small do-
nation to help us with our work is always welcome. If you have questions, or would like to meet Sky, or any of the cats we have available, complete the contact form on our website, or ring Theresa on 680 475 500 between 10am-6pm any day. That Xmas style Looking for something special to wear at Christmas? Our charity shop on Golf del Sur has been expanded, with a much bigger dress section, and we also have plenty of smart items for gentlemen. The shop is open 7 days a week, from 10am-6pm, except Saturdays (11am4pm). And as well as a huge choice of quality clothes, there are Shoes, Books, DVDS, Jewellery, Ornaments and so much more. So do pop in. We’re by the San Blas church square on the left.

Sabores shake Treehouse For this week’s review, we start for a change in Division Two after the shock of the season in El Medano.
League leaders Treehouse B travelled there to face bottom team Sabores, who were pointless. However, that was all about to change! There had been signs that Sabores were starting to find their League feet. But this was a tough ask, especially without captain Lorraine, who was on a scouting mission in Barcelona. The visitors picked up early frames, but the hosts matched them every step, which threw the Treehouse boys because they weren’t expecting that. Mistakes were made, but take nothing away from Sabores, whose heads have not dropped at all this season. Despite their record, they put up a good fight and, when the game ended in a draw, you could hear the collective sigh of relief from the visitors … and the cheers as Sabores grabbed their first-ever point. Well done! The chasing teams, seeking to make ground on the leaders, welcomed the Treehouse setback. Bluebell B, who are second, welcomed
Hoppy’s A to Los Cristianos, and it was almost as if they knew what was transpiring in El Medano. Bluebell, who are mean on their “blue” table, took no prisoners as the frames began racking up, and Hoppy’s didn’t know what hit them. There was no Kev for the visitors, and he was missed as the hosts eased to victory. That wasn’t the case for Crown B. They are also in the title mix and were at home to the league’s in-form Picasso’s A. They realised early on that they would have to work hard as Picas so’s took early frames and suddenly found themselves 5-1 up. There was whiff of an upset, or maybe that was just the Brut worn by Bounty Hunter Greg! He was also in deep trouble against Picasso’s skipper Fran. She had him tied up as he likes it - and Greg needed a re-rack to steal the win which, ultimately, set up a razorthin 7-5 win. It could prove a massive three points in the final reckoning. It was all-change again at the top of Division One as Gaffers A reclaimed top spot. They had an away tie at The Phoenix in Los Abrigos, which can be a difficult venue to visit. But the home team haven’t been at their best this season, and

it proved another bad night at the table for them. Things started quite well though as the first session finished 2-2. But Gaffers got their noses in front in the second session and never looked back. They are back on top, but it could be temporary because Treehouse A were in action as we went to print. Dreamers A continued their good run of form with a win against Palms A, but they were made to work hard for it. Steve had a first-frame 7-baller to get the hosts going, but all games were close after that, and a bit of luck could have easily seen Palms take something from the match. Tommy was in fine form for Dreamers, and this made all the difference in their tight, 7-5 success. Down on Amarilla Golf, Terrace Bar Bantams hosted Palms B, who were hoping for a victory to keep in touch with the teams

ahead of them. It was all-square after the first four frames, but the home side came out stronger in the second set, with Mal and Con taking the first frames. Graeme struck back, but Marky P, returning to form, grabbed the next and it was 5-3 to the Bantams. Palms B took the next, only for Con to beat Shammy and guarantee at least a point for the home side. Entering the last frame, Mal had a chance to clinch victory, but he came up against an in-form Shi. His pool was outstanding and he soon dispatched his opponent to make it honours even. Tenerife Hammers A have put themselves into a good position, especially with games in hand, and this week they had a home game against Terrace Roosters. Though bottom of the league, Roosters made the Hammers work really hard, matching them early on and, thanks to some inspired pool from

Super Mario, even took the lead. But the hosts dug deep and kept fighting, eventually regaining the lead and maintaining it for a win (don’t worry Fin, we won’t mention your game!). Gaffers B, who are holding their own this season after gaining promotion, faced fellow-Division One new boys Bluebell A. These teams obviously know each other, so it was a cagey affair to start with. But the home side soon got going and with some excellent pool. Try as they might, Bluebell could just not get a foot-hold and, before they knew it, Gaffers were over the line and celebrating another three points. Rewind A are starting to show the kind of form we know they are capable of as they played host to Tenerife Hammers. Early frames were traded but, eventually, John and the Rewind boys managed to get in front, then defended their lead with some good, solid shots. and Rewind wrapped up another nice win. The night got even worse for Hammers’ Bobby Baker, who made the mistake of bragging about how he could beat one of the girls in the bar. How did it go? Let’s just say that Bobby Baker is no birdbeater! This week sees the first round of the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup. The draw has been kind to the top-flight sides, although there could be a couple of shocks. Treehouse B will fancy an upset at Rewind A, especially if they can make a fast start. Tenerife Pool Tables should give Exiles A plenty to think about, while Sabores have nothing to lose in their Derby clash with Phoenix Potters! Jucee Girls taste Derby defeat
It was John Lowe week which meant knockout matches in the darts league and there were some real battles. In Las Americas there was a derby match as Gaffers hosted their
Jucee Girls. The ladies could probably win the drinking contest, but they couldn’t quite take the honours on the oche! Joining Gaffers in the last 8 were Phoenix Bar, Picassos, Boothen
Titans, Pas O Nadas A, Sndys Chippers, Phoenix Flights and Marilyns who seem to enjoy the knockout nights. Full results were... John Lowe Trophy Gaffers 5-2 Gaffers Ju-

Tenerife go double-bubble Albacete 1 CD Tenerife 2 By Roscoe YOU know things are going your way as Tenerife manager when Aitor Sanz gets on the scoresheet! This second win for new manager Jose Marti was one to enjoy, and another sign that the team are going the right way.
There were hints under Raul Agne, and now Marti is getting a more consistent tune out of a willing bunch of players. There has been a fair bit of humble pie-eating from sections of the media, and a fair few Know-It-All fans. I suggested that a fresh man with new ideas was needed. Tired old, often-sacked coaches are only ever a shortterm solution. Marti couldn’t have asked for more from his charges. The key is the midfield, which is looking so strong and flexible. And Sanz, Vitolo and
Alberto are playing like best mates. The early goal settled the side and forced Albacete forward. Like Tenerife, they prefer a counter-attack, and they were not going to get that chance with our threeman, dogs of war, midfield. Albacete scored an equaliser in time-added-on at the end of the first half through an unlikely source. Paredes was having a nose-bleed, being that far up the pitch, as he pinched what was only his second goal in 12 years! That’s 230 senior matches.
This saw both sides tightening up in the second half, and a third goal was always going to be enough. And, just when Tenerife needed him, the captain popped up! Suso’s 81st-minute effort was his fourth of the season. He has never hit that mark before Christmas in his CDT career. Tenerife are now climbing the table steadily and have three of the next four matches in Santa Cruz. These will tell us where we are and will, surely, shape the season. On Sunday, there is an old boys’ reunion. The Position
man who has managed more Tenerife games than anyone else faces the man who has done the least! Jose Luis Oltra needs no introduction, and it’s pleasing to see him in second place with Cordoba. He has just signed a new, improved two -and-a-half-year deal, and he will get another massive cheer when he steps into the stadium. However, he is enjoying getting one over us. In the three visits to Santa Cruz since he left us, he is yet to taste defeat - and has picked up a few useful wins. Also returning is
Razak Brimah. Fans with long memories will give him a warm hand. His love for Tenerife is well-documented, and his son was born here. When we suffered relegation to the third tier, he voluntarily tore up his contract and cost himself over 100,000 euros. He did this with no side to join; in fact, he spent the next nine weeks without a job. Since then he has improved, hand-overfist. English clubs have been watching him and he is now Ghana’s first choice with over 15 caps. And he had a starring role in the African Nations Cup!

Martial blow for United
WE have managed to get through another round of pointless international friendlies - apart from the Republic of Ireland getting through the Euro 2016 play-offs! Most players have come back in one piece, which will certainly please the managers. display: dominate the game but create no chances. Sturridge may return but is lacking match-fitness. Sakho is another injury victim after starting the season well, so who will mark Sterling? Prediction: Away win Last season: 3-1
By Adi Benson
Watford v Man Utd
From the three teams who won promotion last season, Watford look like staying, and that’s down to their good-strength squad. They started the season slowly and struggled for goals, but they are now scoring and defending well, which puts them in mid-table. But this clash is a real test. Anthony Martial, who has made a huge impression with United, left Wembley on crutches, his left ankle heavily bandaged, after France went down 2-0 against England on Tuesday. It was such a shame because he had performed so well in the two France internationals. Fitness permitting, I would like to see Van Gaal play him down the middle instead of out wide and, given Rooney’s current form, he deserves his chance. Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A
Chelsea v Norwich
What’s pleasing for Chelsea fans is that they have now gone two weeks without being beaten! Their opponents sit just above them in the league, and another loss would be a disaster. But they must surely turn a corner sooner or later. I still believe Mourinho has unsettled the team too much with his off-field antics, and they need to get back to playing football. Norwich will be disappointed they haven’t done better so far, and this is a tough fixture. But given recent results at Stamford Bridge, they will fancy their chances. If they can get an early goal, Chelsea heads will drop and they might just get a result. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A
Everton v Aston Villa
The Toffees have been a little hot and cold
Tottenham v West Ham
this season, but have started to impress in their last couple of games. They’ve tightened their defence and look a decent, attacking outfit, with Lukaku getting among the goals. Top half of the table beckons, but their fans will want to see them challenging for the Europa League. Villa, under the leadership of Rémi Garde, achieved an unlikely point against Man City in their last league game, and the international break couldn’t have come at a worse time for them as they looked to build on that momentum. Garde has concentrated on defence, but his task in getting the team scoring will be much more difficult. Last season: 3-0 Prediction: Away win
Newcastle v Leicester
Newcastle have just managed to move out of the relegation places, but they have a long way to go if they want to reach safety. Apart from one decent performance against Norwich, winning 6-2, they have been poor, and it is difficult to see where they will improve. I have never rated Steve McClaren as a manager, and it looks as though
the players are not playing for him. In contrast, Leicester are fighting for Claudio Ranieri in every game; they just don’t know when they are beaten. They are third in the table although, if you look at their fixtures, they haven’t really played any of the socalled big teams. Those games are coming up, but if the Foxes continue to show this never-say-die attitude, who knows what they can achieve? Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-0
Southampton v Stoke
After a slow start, Saints have put a run together to climb to within touching distance of the top four. But for a side who defend so well, they still don’t score enough goals for me. If they can improve on that, they could mount a decent challenge for Champions League football. Stoke have gone back to the battling team we are used to, and it’s getting them results. They have moved clear of the relegation places and, after beating Chelsea, they will strive to keep up their winning ways. If they adopt the same
style this time, they have a chance because Southampton are not an overly-physical team. Prediction: Draw Last season: 1-0
Swansea v Bournemouth
Swansea have been struggling, and manager Garry Monk is subject to speculation about his job. This is never healthy for a club because it can affect the players and performances, and I think it would be a mistake to replace him. He is still young and learning, and I’m sure he will pull them out of their slump - and this is a good game to start with. Eddie Howe is another young manager with a big task on his hands. Bournemouth are in the relegation places and struggling for points. But the club are behind him, as are the players, and one good result could set them on a run. Prediction: Draw Last season: N/A
West Brom v Arsenal
The Baggies have not had the best of seasons, but at least they have been beating the teams around them, which will see them safe. The defence has tightened
up again, making them difficult to beat, but they lack a little creativity. Rondon is finally scoring goals, but he needs his teammates to start chipping in as well. Arsenal are nicelyplaced behind City, just waiting for them to make a mistake, but I feel that a slip beckons. And it would be typical of them to make it against a team like West Brom. They will be frustrated by their opponents’ defence and, when that happens, Arsenal can easily be hit on the counter-attack. Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-1
Man City v Liverpool
City have a squad packed with internationals, but they are not running away with the league and are capable of a poor performance, as shown against Villa. They know Arsenal are just behind them, and they also know Liverpool are going to be tough opposition. The key could well be Raheem Sterling, who will either be man-of-the-match against his former club, or will disappear! Jurgen Klopp was finally beaten by Crystal Palace in what was a typical Liverpool
Spurs have recently got back to winning ways and are sitting in fifth position but, for me, they flatter to deceive. Are they really any good? They have a small squad, and a couple of injuries could prove costly for them. This will be a decent test, and a win will start to put a little daylight between themselves and the teams behind. West Ham have been a surprise package to some extent, but they are playing decent football and look as though they have good team unity. They have some promising youngsters in among the experienced pros, which is proving a good blend for Bilic. Prediction: Home win Last season: 2-2
Crystal Palace v Sunderland
Palace are wellorganised and lethal on the counter-attack because they have pace on their wings. Alan Pardew has really brought them together as a side, and they are being rewarded with results and points. They are difficult to break down at the back, which gives them a platform from which to attack. Sunderland, whose luck has finally ended, are looking like a relegated team already. Nothing seems to go for them, and everything on the pitch looks forced. They need a slice of good fortune something to get them believing again. The team need a confidence boost, so a win here would be just what the doctor ordered. Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-3
