Local mayors praise Manley meeting

Simon Manley was appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador in May 2013, taking up the post in the October. He has has been a member of HM Diplomatic Service since 1990.

Before the posting, he was Europe Director at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and, previously, served as the FCO’s Director Defence and Strategic Threats (2008-2011), leading the Government’s international counter-terrorist efforts. He was also head of Counter-Terrorism Policy (2006-2008).

The Ambassador, on only his second official visit to the archipelago, started the week in Gran Canaria and Fuertventura, before returning to the former on Tuesday. He travelled to Tenerife first thing on Wednesday and took in some appointments in the South.

Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga hosted a working meeting with the Ambassador, and was joined by Charmaine Arbouin, British Consul to Andalucía, Southern Spain and the Canary Islands, and Helen Díaz de Ar-

caya Keating, ViceConsul based in Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

Arona Mayor José Julián Mena and his Tourism Councillor, David Peréz, were also present, as was his Adeje counterpart Ermitas Moreira Garcia, and Ana Oneida Borges Medina. from Adeje’s Social Welfare Department.

The Ambassador had specifically requested a meeting in Adeje with the Mayors to explore areas of mutual interest, including the current situation of British nationals living in South Tenerife, safety for tourists and British residents, and how the Embassy, consular staff and the councils can work together to aid “the most vulnerable people” in both boroughs.

Mayor Fraga spoke of the importance of Adeje’s Brits and of everyone living in this multicultural borough, and of those in Arona, with 11,000 Britons on the padrón across the two boroughs.

He said: “We have an on-going plan of co-existence, with over 120 nationalities in Adeje, as well as different religions and culture - and we are on the way to creating a multi-cultur-

al society, where tolerance and respect are paramount.”

Referring to the Britons’ speed of integration in Adeje, he said, “sometimes it might not be as fast as we wish”.

So he was delighted to work with the Consul and Embassy to strengthen that process, “and both communities can only enrich each other”, he added.

And of the importance of developing a bilingual society, Mayor Fraga said it was a two-way process, with English speakers living here perhaps needing more help to learn Spanish, and local Canarians being encouraged to learn more English.

Mayor Mena, of Arona, said his administration was working to become bilingual in many aspects, and also pointed out that, in many regards, “he didn’t see boundaries between Adeje and Arona” when it came to working on integration, referring to the British community overall.

“All the means to advance that we can take together will be very positive in this regard,” he added.

Ambassador Manley said: “We had a really good discussion with

the two mayors, dealing with some of the challenges British nationals face here. I’m really pleased by the spirit in which the two mayors have approached this with openness, collaboration, co-operation.

“We’re a small team and we depend upon the relationships we have - whether they be with mayors of towns like these, with police, with hospital workers, and with British nationals themselves, those in organisations.

“I am very pleased at the willingness of both mayors to work with these organisations to enhance the integration of Brits here in Adeje and Arona.”

The Ambassador has an easy nature and there is no doubt he enjoyed his time here - and the trip was a success.

He added: “The Canary Islands are very important. Over four million British tourists every year, 30,000 residents and a lot are not on the padrón, which is why I’m urging them to sign on. We depend upon the relationships with lots of organisations here.

“Whether that is the Government of the Canary Islands or local au-

thorities, over the last three days I’ve been meeting so many people who are so important to our Consulate teams across the islands.”

On the need for British residents to better integrate, he said: “There are two key things here, as in any other part of Spain - I say it to my fellow Brits: ‘get yourself on the padrón (residential register). It’s the starting point to secure the services you need. And learn the language.’”

The Adeje Mayor responded, saying: “This is a win-win situation, when British and Spaniards get together and learn each others language. To have English and Spanish, as young people in Spain, they will have them extraordinary access to the world.”

This was the Ambassador’s first official visit of 2015 but he was here earlier this year.

He told Oasis Fm: “We had a great time when we came here between Christmas and New Year last year. We stayed down in Adeje. The kids had a great time as well.

So it’s nice to be back, and it’s a lovely island, as all of your listeners know!

“And it’s a very important Island for us in

terms of the sheer number of British nationals who come here on holiday, and who live here.

“So it’s good to be here to speak to so many of the organisations with whom we work, to ensure that the Brits’ time here on the Island is as safe and secure as possible, whether they are coming for a week or a lifetime.”

With his background in counter-terrorism, Manley is really clued up on the world’s recent problems. He told us: “I think the safety and security of people when they travel, in these dreadful times, when we face an unprecedented terrorist threat, is really important.

“And I think the Spanish authorities, along with the national and local police, do a really great job to ensure that Brits stay safe and stay secure.”

He added: “The Spanish security services are doing a great job against the Jihadist threat, as are our own security services in the UK. “We are working closely with our own security forces and American partners in this fight, and it’s a fight for our values, for our freedom.

“And it’s a fight we’ll win!”

The pains in planes...

THERE were a number of incidents involving planes en-route to or leaving Tenerife South airport airport this week, and one incident closed the main runway for over four hours on Monday.

A Norwegian airlines’ plane, flight IBK5360, was scheduled to leave at 9am to Berlin. But 25 minutes later, it is thought that one of the two tyres on the righthand main landing gear punctured.

It is unclear whether the pilot knew about it before the plane was given the green light to attempt a take-off.

As the plane hit its take-off speed of 80-100 knots, the pilot became aware of the problem and instigated a Rejected Take Off. A poster on an aviation website explained what probably happened next.

“On a dry surface, like Tenerife, the auto-brake

system will use the full 3,000 psi brake pressure available to stop the aircraft.

“The energy of the aircraft contains two parts - mass and speed. The energy of the aircraft will be four times as high when you double the speed; hence, energy is increased by the square root of the speed increase.

“Double speed means four times the energy.

So an aircraft with high mass, like this case in Tenerife, with high fuel and pay load, and high speed at the abort, will create high temperatures on the brakes.

This will, in turn, heat up the tyres, in addition to the energy already being absorbed by the wheels during the braking. So the maximum temperature will be reached a few minutes after the aircraft has come to a complete stop.”

This seems to explain why both tyres were completely blown out by the time the emergency services arrived, but happily, there were no injuries on board.

Another Canary earthquake The National Geographic Institute (IGN) registered a minor earthquake on El Hierro on Monday, measuring 3.1 magnitude on the Richter scale. It was centred in the sea, west of the La Frontera town.

The quake, which occurred at midday and

was 33km deep, was largely unfelt by the population, according to the Emergency Coordinator and Safety Centre (CECOES) 1-12 of the Canary Islands Government.

Throughout last week, IGN recorded 15 small earthquakes in El Hierro, the largest of which, until Monday’s quake, was 2.9 degrees.

These quakes come a week after a decentsize movement in Fuerteventura.

spent 90 minutes draining the plane’s 17,000 litres of aviation fuel before it was removed from the runway. Accident investigators immediately started their investigation into what caused the tyre failure.

Over 35 flights were diverted, most of them to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.

The runway reopened at 1.30pm, but there were some lengthy delays because of the backlog.

The following day a Thomson Boeing 757 plane, carrying hundreds of passengers from Bristol airport, was forced to do a Uturn after the windscreen smashed midway through the flight.

The incident is believed to have happened with the plane flying over Vigo, in north-west Spain, seconds before entering Portuguese airspace.

The pilot made the decision to return to the UK immediately, and the plane was re-routed to Gatwick. A spokeswoman for Thomson Airlines said: “We would

like to apologise for the inconvenience to customers on board flight TOM6278, from Bristol to Tenerife, which has diverted to London Gatwick airport as a precautionary measure due to a technical issue.”

And last week, when a Monarch flight was severely delayed, the airline apologised to nearly 200 holiday-makers.

They were forced to spend an extra day-anda half here after their

flight had been cancelled because of a hydraulic leak.

The plane was supposed to fly out at 12.40am on Tuesday, but did not return to Birmingham Airport until 7pm on Wednesday - a 38-hour delay which left passengers fuming.

A Monarch Airlines spokeswoman said: “The aircraft developed a technical issue down route in Tenerife. Engineers were dispatched to resolve the issue as

quickly as possible.

“However, this resulted in the flight stopping in Tenerife and operating back to the UK the following day. Our customers were transported to a local hotel and given accommodation including meals and beverages.

“They were also given vouchers to use in the airport’s food outlets during the delay. We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience.”

Monster motor menace THERE has been an annual invasion in Tenerife, which continues to grow, and it’s now causing genuine social problems.

But this isn’t some form of immigration or a deadly animal which will affect the eco system. It is man-

made and the menace is … the motor vehicle!

Most main sections of the motorways, the TF-5 especially, are gridlocked during the rush-hour, morning and evening, and even towns are affected by City-style jams.

Official figures out this week reveal that there are 719 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants in Tenerife, which is

the highest in Spain. In fact, it would put our Island at the top of the European table.

According to the Cabildo, the number of cars per 1,000 inhabitants on the Spanish Peninsula is 413.

In actual numbers, the Island experienced an increase from 500,000 to 600,000 vehicles between 2000 and 2010.

And using these

figures as an average 10,000 per year rise - the Cabildo feels that is on the low side - it would put 650,000 vehicles on today’s roads.

To try to break this trend of private-car use, municipalities and town halls are trying to come up with ways of improving public links and reducing the volume of traffic in all areas.

Costa Adeje’s tourism brand of benefit to all ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga told an assembly gathered to discuss the future challenges for Costa Adeje that its main target was to “strengthen and maintain the position it currently enjoys”.

He added: “We must maintain the dynamism which sees the introduction of new tourism products as part of the continuous renovation that is part of the market.”

The Mayor was speaking at the Hotel H10, Costa Adeje Palace, in one of a series of conferences organised by Tribuna Forum.

There were over 150 members of the public present, as well as Mayors Pedro Martín and José Julián Mena, from Guía de Isora and Arona respectively, together with Adeje councillors and representatives from the business sector.

Pedro Martín, introducing the Adeje Mayor, paid tribute to his ability to “take the income from the tourism sector and distribute it in such as way as to benefit the society in general.”

He added: “Miguel (Rodríguez Fraga) has managed to widen the frontiers for his residents from social and economic points of view.”

During his address, Adeje’s Mayor outlined the main challenges facing the borough if it wanted to remain competitive within the tourist sector and what lines of action needed to be taken.

He detailed the work already under way in the repositioning of the Costa Adeje brand, “which is generating new products as well as renovating existing ones … projects such as the Victoria, Barceló and Hard Rock hotels, which follow a progression thread in the tourist destination,” he said.

Stability and safety were other elements attracting new investment into the destination, and the Mayor expressed his interest in reinforcing the value of the brand from this

point of view, as well as in attracting potential investors.

The quality of the sector’s service, he said, was another value-adding factor, “with merit to our workers, who have adapted to meet the changing situations.

Mayor Rodríguez Fraga added: “We have to recognise how this adds to our value and our competitiveness.

“The borough has been active in promoting training among workers in tourism and reminding businesses that the human capital is how we will develop projects.”

He made particular reference to Adeje’s university campus, “which allows our young people to get the training they need to enter directly into the workforce in relevant positions”.

The Mayor also referred to the positive effects of tourism for the local population, saying: “Residents see that tourism has brought wealth to the borough, and social exchanges have also enriched Adeje.

You sure you’ve not felt the heat?

AVERAGE global temperatures this year are likely to be the warmest on record, say researchers at the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

Their data until the end of October showed 2015 temperatures running “well above” any previous 12-month period, and they point out that the fiveyear period from 2011 to 2015 was also the warmest on record.

According to WMO, the increase has been down to a combination of a strong El Niño and human-induced global warming.

Researchers say their preliminary estimate, based on data from January to October, showed that the global average surface temperature for 2015 was 0.73 degrees C above the 1961-1990 average.

The scientists also found that global temperatures were approximately 1 degree C above the 1880-1899 period, which mirrors a recent finding by the UK Met Office.

The record-breaking 2011-2015 period was 0.57C above the average for 1961-1990.

The WMO adds that levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has also reached new highs. In the northern hemisphere, last Spring saw the three-month global average concentration of CO2 cross the 400 parts per million barrier for the first time (a concentration of 400 ppm means that for every million air particles, 400 of them are carbon dioxide molecules).

“The state of the global climate in 2015 will make history for a number of reasons,” said WMO secretary-

general Michel Jarraud.

“This is likely to be the hottest year on record, with ocean surface temperatures at the highest level since measurements began.”

“This is all bad news for the planet.”

Other researchers agreed that the WMO’s latest data reinforces the view that human emissions of carbon dioxide, from burning fossil fuels, are continuing to heat the planet beyond natural variability.

“The fingerprint of a warming planet is becoming clearer in nearly every corner of the world,” said Dr Ed Hawkins, a climate scientist at the University of Reading.

“Moreover, 2015 is not a one-off, as indicated by the last five years’ average also being the warmest on record.

“In the UK, our variable weather means that 2015 will not set any records for warmth. But the longer view shows UK temperatures have risen about 20% faster than the global average, and we can expect this faster rate to continue.”

The record 2015 temperatures have been felt in many parts of the world. China recorded its warmestever January-October period, and for Africa, it has been the secondwarmest on record.

Heatwaves affected many parts of the world, with India seeing average maximum temperatures over 45C in some areas.

There were also extremely hot periods in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere.

The WMO also argued that much of the extreme weather over the past five years has evolved through human-induced climate change.

Boozy youngsters should be spared 600-euro fines MADRID’S leftist administration, the Ahora Madrid alliance, wants to save the capital’s youngsters from having to pay fines of up to 600 euros for boozing on the streets.

The law was introduced by the previous conservative rulers to prevent large open-air drinking parties, known as botellones.

But Madrid City Hall sources told Spanish daily El País: “The fines are not achieving their goal of reducing the risk of drinking on the streets.”

But because “there’s a law that has to be observed,” officials of the governing alliance are considering commuting the fines for community

work. They might even cancel them “if the offenders can prove they are managing their leisure time in ways other than drinking, such as spending their money on cultural activities, sports and so on”.

A March survey on drinking habits, conducted by the Health Ministry, showed that those aged 15-24 are the ones mostly indulging in botellones in Spain.

In 2014, a previous Ministry report indicated that over half of all students aged 14-18 had enjoyed an outdoor drinking binge the previous month.

Botellones, usually held on streets and in public parks, last until the early hours, sparking routine complaints from neighbours about the noise and mess left behind.

Drinking alcohol in

public areas has been forbidden since 2002, except in pavement cafés and during local fiestas.

The Madrid regional government raised the fines in 2012 and eliminated community work, while the new Citizen Safety Law, passed by Congress in April, establishes penalties of between 100600 euros for drinking alcohol inside establishments or public transport if posing a serious disturbance of the peace.

Between January and October this year, Madrid municipal police issued 29,756 fines, 101 to minors. In 2014 there were 42,266 fines.

But collecting the money is often a different matter because, typically, the youngsters don’t pay it themselves within the 10-day dead-

line, or fail to tell their parents about the sanction.

When the official notice reaches the family home, many choose to appeal, which delays payment for up to four years. And if the person comes of age within that time, he/she can claim insolvency.

Javier Barbero, Madrid Councillor for Health and Security Affairs, and a former psychologist at La Paz University Hospital, admits that botellones “can cause several difficulties, both in terms of public health and coexistence”.

But he also believes the law is inconsistent because it allows people to drink freely in pavement cafes. “We have a law to observe, but we are analysing ways to suggest important changes,” he says.

Tropicana project hits legal setback I’VE mentioned before in this column about how brilliant humans are. Okay, we seem hellbent on destroying this planet, and we are great at arguing passionately about something we cannot prove.

One side has one book, the other side a different version of the same story. It’s a bit like a playground argument about who has the toughest Dad. Anyway...

Our never-ending quest for technological improvements has led to some stunning social changes.

I was having a chat with someone this week about how far we can go when it comes to download speed. The point is, we are nearly at the point of perfection. You cannot speed up real time. A four-minute song takes 240 seconds to make or play. There

will come a day, in the not-too-distant future, when you will be able to download any-size file in the blink of an eye.

Tablets and mobile devices are making the world a very, very small place.

Improvement, Yes! But at what price?

Entertainers are miffed that everyone is playing with their phones rather than watching them perform. The joy of making conversation with a stranger in a pub is gone. Ditto the hotel bar discussion.

And today my good friend Jason Farrell, senior political correspondent for Sky News, tweeted a picture that captures the modern world perfectly.

His tweet read: “Not a single person in my carriage who isn’t using their smart phone. Me included...”

THE Canarian Government has issued a legal objection to the touted Tropicana development of a retail park in Adeje.

Pedro Ortega, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, wants to determine whether the construction licences given to the developers is legally binding before work begins.

As it stands, the construction was set to begin on 2nd January, said developer Tropicana SL. But as a result of this action, signed by Ortega, the regional government has been given six months to solve the processing of a resolution on a project which keeps hitting the legal buffers.

Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said last July that the insular government’s decision on whether the development can begin was mandatory.

This clarified that the Canary Islands Government administration has the power to decide whether to grant a building licence.

It is understood that the insular Government wants clarification on the “central element” of the land on which the development is planned.

Ministers believe the plots have permits under the Territorial Tourism Plan, which ensures that any buildings must be devoted to leisure activities and not business usage.

“The proposal made by developers is a commercial land, without providing leisure,” said a spokesperson.

For now, the Canary Islands Government has not issued a final report and has to recognise the Superior Court of the Canaries (TSJC), which endorsed the licence, granted in 2010, to build a shopping

centre (linked to an amusement park) on the same plot.

To cloudy the legal waters yet more, the Court of Administrative Litigation No.2 of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has provisionally suspended, based on an initial report of the Cabildo, the building permit issued by Adeje Council on 6th April this year.

Abengoa’s lacking energy, and funds!

ABENGOA, Spain’s troubled renewable energy company, is understood to have begun insolvency proceedings following futile talks with a potential investor which came to nothing.

The Seville-based solar energy firm, with 24,000 employees worldwide, had hoped to reassure investors that it could generate enough cash to service its debts of nearly nine billion dollars.

But shares in Abengoa, which have more than halved over the past year, were this week suspended from trading on the Ma-

drid Stock Exchange.

The company says it is seeking creditor protection to ensure its financial viability, after talks with Spanish industrial group Gonvarri fell through over a possible 350m-euro capital increase.

Abengoa has been at the centre of speculation over its survival for several months, and some questions have been raised over its business model and transparency.

Abengoa’s problem is that instead of simply building projects or operating them, it has been doing both - rais-

ing money from bond markets to finance its expansion. But as continued to flourish, the company had to issue more bonds and refinance its increasing debt pile.

Fatima Banez, Spain’s Labour Minister, has offered to help, saying the Government wanted to send the company a message of “tranquillity, dialogue and negotiation”.

But investors now need to get transparency, answers and control because the proposed fund-raising might not have been big enough to salvage the company.

Whooping cough claims third baby

A BABY of 10 weeks, who contracted whooping cough last month and died, has just been revealed by regional authorities in Castilla-La Mancha.

It was the third infant to die from the disease in Spain in two months - and another new-born is in intensive care at

Toledo’s Virgen de la Salud hospital.

The first death occurred in Seville in September, and the second in Málaga. But Health Minister Alfonso Alonso attempted to dismiss fears of a lack of sufficient whoopingcough immunisations by claiming the Gov-

ernment had recently purchased 60,000 new doses.

The Málaga case is under investigation following claims that the mother, who tried to get immunised against whooping cough while pregnant, was unable to find the vaccine.

Canarian chiefs keeping reels of industry turning THE Canarian Government is to provide a strategic plan to boost the film and audio-visual industry, to make the most of the potential of the economic development and job creation with which it will, hopefully, provide the islands.

Rosa Dávila, Minister of Finance, announced on Monday that the Government has agreed to promote a “new strategy to help boost the future of the

audio-visual industries with some new funding” which, it hopes, will be in place in the new year.

The Government will co-ordinate the work with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, with support from other departments of the autonomous region, the councils, municipalities and the ZEC. Davila said: “This Government has said from the beginning

that its commitment is to promote the development of the audiovisual sector because it has boosted the archipelago financially.

“And is has the significant potential to impact, positively and prominently, the economic development in all the Canaries.”

In recent years, the islands have been the scene of numerous national and international film shoots, attracted by the va-

riety of landscapes.

And, above all, by a favourable tax environment enjoyed by these activities in the Canary Islands.

Among others, there have been three Hollywood blockbusters such as Exodus, by Ridley Scott; In the Heart of the Sea, by Ron Howard, which is about to be released together with the fifth instalment of the Bourne saga, by Paul Greengrass.

Ring-road link to open in January WORK on the motorway connecting the Island’s ring road with the town of Guía de Isora is running smoothly.

The Transport Ministry this week indicated that the work will be completed in the second half of January, and this was confirmed by Canarian Government Roads Minister José Luis Delgado.

The improvements cannot come a minute too soon for a stretch of road which has been deteriorating for decades - the main trunk dating back over half a century.

Guía de Isora Mayor Pedro Martin, delighted with the response from

Public Works Minister Ornella Chacon, said: “I’m happy with this solution. The road’s new condition will benefit 5,000 inhabitants of the town.”

Asked about a possible loss of traffic through the centre of town, and its possible economic state, Martin said: “It will not be abandoned. The land is ripe for expansion - for a new residential area, plus a range of facilities, including a wide range of cultural, sports and health facilities, among other things.”

The new road section will add an extra kilometre to the length.

Loro Parque Foundación’s far-reaching commitments THE Loro Parque Fundación will continue its substantial annual contribution next year to the conservation of biodiversity by committing almost $1 million for 33 worldwide conservation and research projects.

This is a major commitment to protect some of the world’s most threatened species and habitats, not only to help conserve biological diversity, but also to promote sustainable use of natural resources.

The decision to commit the funds was made during the annual meeting of the international advisory board of the Loro Parque Fundacion, held at Loro Parque.

It was presided over by Foundation President Wolfgang Kiessling and

was attended by other trustees and advisers from Denmark, Germany, Spain, the UK and Uruguay.

The board reviewed the activities undertaken and results achieved by the Foundation during the previous 12 months, and reviewed the many applications received from around the world to finance projects in 2016.

Of the total LPF commitment to projects in

2016, 30% of the projects relate to the marine environment, with special emphasis on research to improve the conservation of whales and dolphins.

Seven projects will take place in the Canary Islands, which, together, constitute a region with an extremely high diversity of cetacean species.

Benefit cheat who loved life in her Spanish home A BRITISH benefit fraudster, who fiddled over £41,000 in benefits from the Government, was actually living in the lap of luxury at the Spanish home she owned.

For eight years Vivienne Day, a 70-yearold woman from Basildon, Essex, duped her UK benefit office by claiming housing benefit, council tax benefit, Disability Living Allowance and Pension Credit, though living in Murcia with savings of more than £127,000!

She received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. And she was given three months to repay the full sum she claimed falsely, plus £4,098 costs - or face a nine-month stint behind bars.

In addition, she was subject to a restraint order on her bank ac-

counts under the Proceeds of Crime Act and, therefore, a Confiscation Order was granted.

The court ordered that the monies were to be paid directly from her bank accounts to Basildon Council.

The pensioner was unmasked, thanks to close co-operation between the Department for Work and Pensions - which has a team of investigators based here in Spain - and the Spanish authorities.

Not only did she fail to notify the DWP that she had moved abroad, but she also hid from officials her ownership of a Spanish property, and her savings!

Investigators say one of the most common forms of benefit fraud among expats is failure to update their benefit office on changes of circumstance, such as moving abroad.

They warn that such changes, if not reported, will, in time, be detected and pursued.

Local councillor Stuart Sullivan said: “This is a

remarkable case, both in the scale of fraud and the fact that it went on for eight years.

“Basildon Council take these cases very seriously and, as this case highlights, we will vigorously pursue those who commit these crimes and seek a full refund of money claimed, as well as court costs.”

He added: “I hope the severity of the sentence will act as a deterrent to others.”

This research is part of a network of investigation in the entire region of Macaronesia, gradually accumulating information vital to decisions on a future marine mammal sanctuary in the region.

In partnership with the organisation Elasmocan, a new project beginning

in 2016 will monitor the population in the Canary Islands of the Angel shark, a species in critical danger of extinction.

But its future recovery might be helped by the new aquarium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Of the projects in terrestrial ecosystems to receive funds from the Loro Parque Fundación, 19 will be for the conservation of species of parrots threatened with extinction.

Some long-term projects, starting as early as 1995, have received worldwide recognition as having saved the parrot species from extinction.

This is the case for the Philippine Cockatoo, the Blue-Throated Macaw of Bolivia, the Yellow-Eared Parrot of Colombia and Brazil’s Lear’s Macaw.

The populations of these species are now recovering but, until they reach a safe level, the projects must continue.

Many projects also conserve other important biodiversity, such as the

one for the Yellow-Fronted Parrot in Ethiopia, supported by the Loro Parque Fundación, in partnership with NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) of Germany, which also protects the world’s remaining ancestral coffee trees in the Kafa Biosphere Reserve.

In partnership with Futouris, the German tour operator’s environmental association, the Foundation is supporting projects in Angola and Zimbabwe, within the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA).

This entails the conservation of the African lion, until recently considered to be a common species, but now known to have a rapidly-dwindling wild population.

With the projects it will fund in 2016, the total financed by the Loro Parque Fundación, with more than $16,000,000 over its 21 years of existence, is 115.

It’s ‘harder’ to reduce traffic deaths on road PRELIMINARY figures issued by Spanish traffic authority DGT show that in excess of 1,000 people have died in road accidents so far this year,.

Between 1st January and 18th November, the DGT recorded 1,003 deaths in accidents, which is four more than over the same 2014 period.

And the DIA association of traffic victims admits: “When it comes to road safety in Spain, it’s getting harder and harder to reduce the number of accidents.”

After a decade of consecutive annual reductions in road fatalities, the death toll began to rise again last year. And this summer, traffic fatalities increased for the first time during that period since 2007.

“Traffic accidents continue to be a national problem,” said the DGT. “A lot of people think this is a thing of the past but, on the contrary, we cannot forget that an average of five people die in accidents every day.”

After road deaths rose 40% in January and

14.5% in February, compared with the same months last year, March and April ended with better numbers than in 2014.

The DGT attributes these improvements to increased traffic patrols on secondary roads, where 80% of road deaths occur, and to where it has now relocated all of its mobile speed-cameras.

Despite last year’s rise in road deaths, Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz has continued to defend the Government’s road-safety record: “We have set an example in this area,” he said less than a month ago, during a gala held to celebrate the anniversary of a victims’ association.

“The figures show this.”

Although motorists, victims’ families and researchers have been warning about the change in trend for months, the Minister played down last year’s figures.

And Interior Ministry officials have, repeatedly, also avoided acknowledging that there could be a problem.

Fernández Díaz said:

“Pere Navarro [former DGT director during the previous government of Socialist Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero] set the bar very high.

“But we overcame that challenge, and I don’t regret replacing him with current DGT director María Seguí.”

Despite the 2014 increase in traffic deaths, the Interior Ministry has continued to defend the Government’s road-safety record.

Fernández Díaz also avoided discussing the new, proposed traffic policy drafted by Seguí’s office, which includes a measure to reduce the speed limit on secondary roads to 80km/h.

Seguí had hoped her proposal would be presented to Congress during the past session, but the Cabinet still hasn’t approved it.

“I won’t be angry if it isn’t approved, but I have concerns,” she said back in September, before Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced that the General Election would be held on 20th December.

US wants its own Customs at our Spanish airports AMERICA wants to install officers from its own Customs and Border Protection agency at the MadridBarajas airport, where they to check for possible terrorism suspects boarding flights to the US.

The Spanish Government, yet to respond officially, has already told Washington that it is concerned about the proposal.

Given that the agents would be armed and hold diplomatic immunity, ministers are worried that it would involve a hand-over of national sovereignty.

A 2009 agreement means the US already has three government officials in Madrid, checking the documentation of passengers’ boarding flights - not

only to America but, as El País newspaper revealed, also those flying over US territory.

Although the US officials have the power to prevent those passengers considered a security risk from boarding a flight, they are unable to search or arrest suspects on Spanish soil, as Washington is now requesting.

The installation of a US checkpoint at Madrid airport would mean submitting passengers to the same, stringent, luggage-and-body searches they would undergo upon their arrival in the States.

In theory at least, it would mean no further checks once on US soil - though Washington reserves the right to impose more.

The most controversial issue, however, remains the request for the officers to be armed and enjoy diplomatic immunity, meaning they would not be accounta-

ble to Spanish justice if involved in any incident.

The Spanish Government is now consulting with the Foreign, Interior and Public Works Ministries to compose a definitive response.

Spain’s AENA airport authority is also said to be unenthusiastic because of fears that the extra security measures would bring to Madrid the same long lines now seen at US airports.

The request forms part of America’s so-called pre-clearance programme, first set up in Canada in 1952 and now encompassing airports in Ireland, the Caribbean and, since 2014, the United Arab Emirates.

In May of this year,Washington issued requests to extend the programme to 10 airports in nine other countries, though it remains to be seen how many of them will agree.

In Spain, the US proposal gives rise to several problems. The first is a legal one, given that the agreement ought to take the form of an international treaty ratified by Parliament.

The second relates to national dignity: Spain might not be able to accept such an accord without a clause giving it the right to reciprocate, even if it never intends to take up that right.

The third involves the airlines, which could be reluctant to back an agreement if they cannot guarantee that passengers will not be subjected to further checks upon their arrival in the States.

THE number of women killed by their partners so far in Spain this year totals 48, compared with last year’s 54 and the same number killed in 2013.

These figures have been released by Spain’s Equality Ministry, and, according to Spain’s Domestic and Gender Violence Observatory, these deaths left 42 children without a mum this year, yet just nine woman filed a complaint.

More than one million cases of domestic violence have been dealt with by Spanish courts since 2007, and judges have imprisoned 148,000 men in that time.

Of those cases, 80% arose as a result of a police complaint, some 12% because injuries were recorded at a hospital, and only 8% after a victim or member of the victim’s family pressed charges.

- and observed a minute’s silence in memory of those who have died in the past year. As did many municipalities in Tenerife. In Adeje around 800 people marked the special day with mayor Fraga leading tributes to those who died at the hands

of a partner. 44% of female victims believe the abuse they suffer from partners is not serious enough to warrant a police complaint, according to Isabel Lozano, Equality Councillor in Valencia, where 1,294 women are living under protection orders.

Meanwhile, she said, 21% of victims don’t make a police complaint because they “feel ashamed”.

One third of all women who sought restraining orders against men were foreigners living in Spain.

A survey revealed that

12% of women over 16 said they had experienced physical or sexual violence from their partners, while another 13% admitted they have been afraid of their partner at some point.

The majority of men feel domestic violence is a bad thing, according to the 86% who said so in a recent survey by the Equal Opportunities

Department of Malaga Council.

Yet 52% of all the men questioned admitted they would definitely intervene if they saw a friend abusing his partner.

But even in today’s Spain, it seems that what goes on between a man and his wife behind closed doors is no one else’s concern.

Coe slams banned Russia, but he’s under fire as well ONE minute, Seb Coe is being hailed as the saviour of international athletics, and the next he is accused of skulduggery himself. Such is the lot of the former Olympic double gold-medal winner.

In the wake of Russia’s Athletics Federation recent suspension from all competition, Coe - or Lord Coe, to give him his official title - said: “The whole system has failed athletes around the world.”

The Russians were accused of running a state-sponsored doping programme and Coe, new President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) added: “It’s a shameful wake-up call for the sport.”

A far-reaching, independent report, commissioned by the World AntiDoping Agency (WADA) and led by Dick Pound, a 73-year-old Canadian lawyer and a fierce opponent of drug-taking in sport, exposed the Russians with evidence of a Moscow-testing laboratory which even destroyed samples.

After a meeting involving 24 members of the 27-strong IAAF Council, Coe announced that the All-Russia Athletic Federation (ARAF) had been provisionally sus-

pended with immediate effect. The former MP said: “We have been dealing with the failure of ARAF and have made the decision to provisionally suspend them - the toughest sanction we can apply at this time.

“But we discussed and agreed that the whole system has failed the athletes, not just in Russia, but around the world.

“This has been a shameful wake-up call, and we are clear that cheating at any level will not be tolerated.”

Coe added: “To this end, the IAAF, WADA, the member federations and athletes all need to look closely at ourselves, our cultures and our processes, to identify where failures exist, and be tough in our determination to fix them and rebuild trust in our sport.

There can be no more important focus for our sport.”

But Coe’s IAAF position appears to be in jeopardy following the emergence of a document which points to his possible conflict of interest over the decision to award the 2021 World Championships to Eugene.

Coe was among senior IAAF officials accused of “a violation of fair play” after the American city secured the championships earlier this year without a formal bidding process.

Swedish athletics officials hoping to bid on behalf of Gothenburg

were furious when they learned that documents suggested the IAAF President had lobbied his predecessor, Lamine Diack, about it.

The BBC obtained an email sent by an executive at Nike, suggesting the former golden boy of British athletics lobbied on the behalf of the American bid team to win the right to host the major 2021 event.

The issue resurfaced earlier this month at the scandal-hit IAAF, with Coe coming under pressure because of Eugene’s proximity to the Nike HQ in Beaverton, Oregon, and his refusal to stand down from his £100,000-a-year ambassadorial role with the American sportswear giant.

When the email was sent, Coe was IAAF VicePresident to Diack, who is now at the centre of a corruption investigation conducted by the French authorities.

The BBC says the email, dated 30th January, 2015, is from Craig Masback, director of business affairs for Nike’s Global Sports Marketing, to Vin Lananna and Robert Fasulo, both from Track Town USA, the organisation behind Eugene’s bid.

Masback was the chief executive for USA Track and Field before joining Nike in 2008, and in the email titled ‘2021’, he refers to Coe as “Seb”.

It reads: “I spoke with Seb this morning. We covered several topics, but I asked specifically about 2021.

“He made clear his support for 2021 in Eugene, but made equally clear he had reached out to Diack specifically on this topic and got a clear statement from Diack that “I am not going to take any action at the April meeting (in Beijing) to choose a 2021 site”.’

In the end Diack did

choose the April meeting of the IAAF’s council to announce the surprise vote to award the championships to Eugene.

Coe was among those who voted.

Bjorn Eriksson was head of the Swedish Athletics Federation when the IAAF awarded their showcase event to the American city without allowing Gothenburg to participate in a bidding process.

At the time, Eriksson, Sweden’s former chief police commissioner who went on to serve as the President of Interpol, called it “a violation of fair play”.

Coe assured the BBC he “did not lobby anyone” over Eugene’s bid, but “encouraged them to re-enter another”.

But Eriksson said: “If it turns out there is something in this, and from what we’ve seen so far that looks very likely, I’ll go back to the process (of how the championships were awarded to Eugene).

“They gave us no chance. There was no bidding process. In the best of worlds, it was highly unethical.

At worst, we have to wonder if there were bribes involved.”

Shown the Nike email by the BBC, Eriksson said the fresh allegations needed “an explanation”, adding: “It doesn’t look good - it doesn’t look good at all.

“I would very much like to hear the explanation.

I’ve never seen it before.

I would very much like to hear how could this be explained. It is a very good question for Sebastian Coe.” Asked again about the 2021 process, he said: “It smells and it has to be investigated. That’s for the sport, for everybody involved.”

As for Coe’s ongoing relationship with Nike, he said, pointedly: “I’d say it doesn’t help at all. I’d say it’s a major problem.”

Coe, meanwhile, told the BBC that all of his interests were declared to the IAAF’s ethics committee, and that his views on all the bids for the 2019 World Athletics Championships and Eugene’s 2021 bid “are all a matter of public record”.

The BBC also revealed that UK Sport had confirmed the payment of £63,000 towards Lord Coe’s presidential campaign, in this case used to pay a leading sports PR firm.

In response to whether he had, indeed, used taxpayers’ money to fund his rise to power, he replied that “two-thirds of the campaign was privately funded”.

In a specific response to the infamous email, a statement from the IAAF said: “Seb believed, along with many other council members, that the usual process would be followed and encouraged Eugene to enter the bidding cycle for 2021, which would be decided in November 2016.”

Mosquito antidote could put bite on malaria bug AMERICAN scientists believe they may have found an antidote to malaria, the disease caused by mosquito bites in tropical areas which can be life-threatening.

They have bred a genetically modified (GM) mosquito that can resist malaria infection and, if the lab technique works in the field, they say it could offer a new way of stopping the insects from spreading malaria to humans.

The University of California researchers inserted a new “resistance”gene into the mosquito’s own DNA, using a gene-edit-

ing method called Crispr.

And when the GM mosquitoes mated, their offspring inherited the same resistance, reports the PNAS journal.

So, in theory at least, if these mosquitoes bite people, they should not be able to pass on the parasite that causes malaria.

More than three billion people - almost half of the world’s population are at risk of malaria.

Bed nets, insecticides and repellents can help stop the insects biting, and drugs can be given to those catching the infection.

But the disease still kills

around 580,000 people a year. Scientists have been searching for new ways to fight malaria, and the University of California team believe their GM mosquito could play a pivotal role - breeding resistant offspring to replace endemic, malariacarrying mosquitoes.

They took a type of mosquito found in India - Anopheles stephensi on which to experiment.

And Dr Anthony James, with his team, showed they could give the insect new DNA code to make it a poor host for the malaria parasite.

The DNA, which picks up the anti-bodies that

combat the parasite, was inherited by almost 100% of the mosquito offspring - and across three generations.

Mosquito larvae can be genetically modified to carry “useful” new genes, such as resistance to the Plasmodium parasites that cause malaria.

The University scientists say the findings offer hope that the same method could also work in other mosquito species.

Although it would not be a sole solution to the malaria problem, it would be a useful additional weapon, they say.

Prof David Conway, a

UK expert from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: “It’s not the finished product yet, but it certainly looks promising. It does look like the genetic editing works.”

Other scientists have been looking at genetically-modifying mosquitoes to render them infertile, so that they die out.

But some experts fear that eliminating mosquitoes entirely might have unforeseen and unwanted consequences.

Replacing disease-carrying mosquitoes with harmless breeds is a potential alternative.

Malaria is an infec-

tion which not only can cause serious illness but may be life-threatening.

The Anopheles stephensi mosquito type carry a parasite called plasmodium, which is transported to your liver and then infects your red blood cells.

Malaria is common in tropical areas including sub-Saharan Africa, Central and South America, the Indian subcontinent, South East Asia and the Pacific Islands.

You can’t catch malaria in the UK, but, some 1,500 people are treated for it in Britain each year,. having become infected while abroad.

Car-sharing will ease Northern traffic jams CABILDO President Carlos Alonso has held a meeting with mayors and councillors in 13 of the 15 municipalities of Tenerife North, and also La Laguna, to outline Tenerife’s proposals to end the horrendous traffic jams plaguing motorists.

For more than two decades, the jams have badly-affected the TF5 motorway. But a new proposal, by Tacoronte Mayor Alvaro Davila, suggested the creation of a new parking zone near the TF-5 to promote and facilitate carsharing.

Alonso, who liked the idea, suggested the local councils would seek out the most suitable plots for parking spaces in different municipalities.

He added that the relevant councils could bear the cost of creating

Bomb-threat man is arrested in Madrid

SPANISH police have arrested a man who threatened to bomb Madrid and Barcelona for Islamic State.

The 42-year-old from Morocco was also held on suspicion of recruiting and brainwashing people to become jihadists. He is being detained in Segovia Jail, north of Madrid He is believed to have targeted fellow inmates, who are doing time for drugs offences.

The arrest of a suspected terrorist is the first in Spain since the 13th November Paris attacks, which killed 130 people and injured nearly 400.

Two former inmates of the same prison were arrested last month for threatening to carry out bomb attacks in Madrid and Barcelona - Spain’s two main cities - in letters sent to the headquarters of the

country’s ruling party, Partido Popular.

It emerged at the weekend that a wheelchair-bound Islamic extremist confessed to sending more than 200 jihadists to Syria and Iraq.

Mustafa Maya, a 52-year-old Belgianborn former drug addict, made the admission during questioning by a Spanish prosecutor, according to Spanish daily El Pais.

Maya was arrested last year in the Spanish enclave of Melilla on suspicion of heading an Islamic State recruitment network.

He is currently awaiting trial.

The radical, son of Spanish immigrants to Belgium, converted to Islam while in prison for burglary.

Figures released at the start of the month showed the number of suspected Islamic jihadists arrested in police operations so far in Spain this year had nearly doubled from the 36 held last year.

La Orotava Mayor Francisco Linares described the meeting as “something historic”, adding: “We now intend to take short-term measures to end a problem that affects between 60,000 and 70,000 residents in the North from Monday to Friday, nine of the 12 months of the year.”

Ignacio Rodriguez, the Matanzas Mayor, praised the initiative but said firmly that it was time the municipalities analysed the Cabildo proposals. “That we are here does not mean we have given the nod to everything,” he added.

Ramblera Mayor Fidela Velázquez emphasised the need to improve the North’s public transport “in the lowlands, and especially in the midland area”.

The meeting was attended by the Mayors of La Laguna, Tacoronte, La Matanza, La Victoria, La Orotava, San Juan de la Rambla, Icod, El Tanque, Garachico and Buenavista.

The other towns sent representative councillors, except La Guancha and Puerto de la Cruz.

Also present were Cabildo Vice-President Aurelio Abreu and Councillor Coromoto Yanes, plus Transportation and Motorway Ministers Manuel Ortega and Ofelia Manjón.

Angelina’s tonic for possible breast-cancer victims

Jolie good show!

WHEN popular actress Angelina Jolie publicly announced that she’d had a double mastectomy, it boosted the number of people also seeking preventative surgery from breast cancer, especially in Britain.

The Hollywood star had been told that a faulty hereditary gene left her with an 87% risk of developing breast cancer, and a 50% risk of developing ovarian cancer.

After opting for a preventive double mastectomy, Jolie wrote in the New York Times: “I decided to be proactive, and to minimise the risk as much as I could.”

A Manchester NHS clinic has since attributed a sharp rise in the procedure to women being inspired by Jolie’s announcement.

tween January 2011 and June 2014, there were 29 double mastectomies carried out at the Genesis Prevention Centre.

And that total rose to 83 between January 2014 and June 2015.

Unsurprisingly, this increase has been dubbed the “Angelina Effect” by researchers.

Gareth Evans, Professor of clinical genetics at Genesis Centre, said the rise in mastectomies started around nine months after Angelina spoke publicly.

“While we haven’t ana-

lysed women’s motivations for undergoing this type of surgery, the correlation suggests ‘the Angelina effect’, has been prolonged, resulting in both increased referrals to our clinic, and increased rates of preventative surgery.”

Genesis Centre Chairman Lester Barr, said: “We’re now confident that Angelina’s story will continue to raise awareness of the BRCA gene mutations and that this increased knowledge, particu-

larly among medium and high-risk women, will be passed on to the next generation.”

Samia al Qadhi, Breast Cancer Care Chief Executive, said: “Angelina’s courage in sharing her experiences has highlighted this incredibly-important issue.

“The percentage of women ringing our help-line to ask questions about family history and breast cancer increased five-fold after she made her announcement.”

JFK murder film mystery THE grand-daughter of a man who filmed the assassination of President John F Kennedy as a home movie wants it back!

Gayle Nix Jackson, who is suing the US Government for its return, also wants 10 million dollars compensation for the film, shot by Orville Nix in November 1963.

He sold it to a news agency that year, but it was later handed to the Government for its inquiries.

Ms Nix Jackson says she was told this year that the Government agency believed to be in possession did not have the film.

The 8mm Nix film was shot on the opposite side of the presidential limousine from where the famous Zapruder film was taken on 22nd November, 1963.

The Nix film shows the bullet hitting the President, First Lady Jackie Kennedy climbing on to the boot of the limousine, and secret service agent Clint Hill jumping into the vehicle.

It was filmed from Dealey Plaza, showing

Zapruder across the street, and the famous grassy knoll, from where some witnesses thought they heard a shot fired.

It is not as complete as the Zapruder film because it shows part of the assassination only.

But the lawsuit cites the Warren Commission - which investigated the assassination - as saying the Nix film was “nearly as important as the Zapruder film”.

The US Government purchased the Zapruder film for $16m in 1999 in a settlement with his heirs.

Orville Nix sold his film to UPI for $5,000, with an agreement for its return after 25 years. But it was handed over to the Government for the inquiry.

Its last known sighting was with the House Select Committee on Assassinations in 1978.

It was believed to have been handed over to the National Archives and Records Administration. But the lawsuit says the agency has told Ms Nix Jackson, who lives in Fort Worth in Texas, it no longer has the film.

Constance Carpenito recently scooped her jackpot on the $10,000,000 Diamond Millionaire instant game.

He said: “The inclusion of Ms Hopkins has been

met with widespread outcry from the student body and the Students’ Union.”

Joe Nicell, Brunel SU’s communications manager, told The Independent newspaper that some 50 people had walked out of the debate in a protest, which had been planned beforehand.

“It was mainly that we didn’t feel she fitted the debate, and that she wasn’t the right person to be speaking,” he added.

THE Canary Islands is often at the forefront of what’s going on across Spain and, right now, it relates to the rising property market.

After falling sharply from pre-crisis peaks, property prices in Spain are bubbling again as a recovering economic picture and weak euro are combining to boost the housing sector.

The Canary Islands, which includes Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran

Buoyant property market Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, saw 4,658 properties sold in the third quarter of 2015, as prices across Spain rose by 6%, according to Registradores de Espana, Spain’s property registers.

It came as Tinsa (housing valuation specialists) reported the first annual rise for house prices since March 2008.

This was, largely, driven by a strong island market - particularly a 4.2% rise in Canary Islands’ property prices.

Meanwhile, Spanish Government figures show that the Canaries saw the most property sector growth in the second quarter of the year.

The market has been characterised by a steady drop in prices

from 2008 through to 2013, with a turnaround starting to appear last year. Confirmation from both Tinsa and Registradores de Espana that prices are on the march again is a sign that the

recovery is taking root.

Much of the demand is again coming from overseas, as a weak euro exchange rate means buyers from the UK, in particular, get more for their money.

The euro has dropped to its lowest against the pound since 2007, offering Brits a lot more purchasing power in Spain.

According to the Registradores, one in eight properties was sold to a foreign buyer in the third quarter. British buyers accounted for more than 23% of all purchases made by foreigners - roughly 3,000 properties throughout the three-month period.

Prices are increasing, and the Canaries is leading the field, but, clearly,

there are still bargains available.

According to Tinsa, the average price in Spain is still 41% down from the pre-crisis highs. In the Balearic and Canary Islands group, the average is just 30% below.

However, Tinsa is keen to stress that, despite the clear evidence that house prices have turned a corner, things could change if the wider economic situation is affected.

“The truth is that stabilisation has yet to be consolidated,” said the group in its report. “The evolution of the average price in the coming months will depend on the performance of the economy and the labour market.”

the new Tourism on a high Europa, Goddess of cash!

TENERIFE Cabildo expects to close the year with a growth of 2-3% of tourists, with figures close to 5.3 million visitors. for 2015.

Cabildo Tourism Councillor Alberto Bernabe says the growth is, particularly, down to the recovery of the Spanish economy, together with the progressive stability of international tourism.

“This is one of the highest records in history, alongside those in 2006 (5.4m visitors), and in 2007 and 2008, with about 5.3 million visitors,” he said.

“Again, we have similar tourist figures to those recorded before the start of the crisis.

It is a further sign of recovery and economic dynamism, which is also reflected in the employment figures in the sector.”

Bernabe said these results supported the work done since the “Tenerife Tourism” brand was introduced.

The new, direct connections to the mainland with airline companies Vueling, Iberia Express, and the new Norwegian flights, have contributed to the Island’s visitor increase.

The Councillor also highlighted job opportunities, saying: “Tour-

ism offers a sector that creates 24% of employment generated in the Island.

“We must celebrate not only the growth in hiring around 7.4% extra people this year, but also the 7% decrease of unemployment in the sector.”

Inbound Tourism Statistics, prepared by the Cabildo and analysed by the Research Department of Tourism Tenerife, recorded a total of 4,390,686 tourists from January to October, representing a 1.7% increase over the same 2014 period.

In those first 10 months of the year, Tenerife tourist establishments recorded

32,973,281 overnight stays, which was 0.2% less than the previous year. This reflected the decline in the average stay (0.14 points), but the occupancy rate stood at 67.7% (+7%).

Tenerife Tourism statistics in October recorded a 0.7% increase over the previous year, adding up to 474,291 tourists.

Overnight stays totalled 3,404,454, up 0.4% from October 2014, and the average stay stood at 7.18 days (-0.08 points).

For its part, the occupation of tourist establishments reached 69.2% on average, which was a 0.9% improvement.

An Island Parish: Falklands BBC2, 20:30

A New Era... Series following the community on the Falkland Islands. The Texans come to town to update the islanders on the oil exploration going on offshore. In 1998, Falkland islanders were told that there are huge deposits of oil in the waters surrounding the islands.

Whilst many islanders are excited about the possible benefits oil could bring, others are concerned about the changes they will bring. Resident marine biologist Megan Tierney is pioneering some new research using a tracking system and sets out to catch some gentoo penguins so that she can find out where they go to feed during the winter. Meanwhile, the islanders are practising their dance steps for the annual May Ball. It is a rite of passage for Stanley teenagers and everyone wants to look their best for the big night. There is a new army padre on the islands and he’s got a sidekick.

Grand Designs Channel 4, 20:00 In this final episode Kevin McCloud reveals the winner of the Royal Institute of British Architects House of the Year 2015. There are three extraordinary houses still to see: a simple but beautiful timber and steel clad home in Dungeness; a soaring pink brick house in Belfast with fabulous views of the surrounding landscape; and an 18thcentury converted mill in a remote, rural part of Scotland. The three are vying for the last place on the finalist shortlist. And then, at the end of the show, Kevin announces the overall winner of this year’s prestigious award and visits the house to discover why it has been crowned the best new home in Britain.

Tony Robinson and the Team climb a remote Herefordshire hill to investigate a huge prehistoric site. Aerial photographs and local investigations suggest Dinmore Hill may have been a vast Iron Age hill fort. With the site covering 40 acres, the Team expect no shortage of targets to dig, but a frustrated geophys team can’t find a single satisfactory target. Undaunted, the Team dig a 40-metre trench to try to find the immense defensive ditch that was believed to surround the site. And then the rain starts. While the trenches are shut in case they collapse, the archaeologists try to understand the monument, and disagree about the purpose and date of the prehistoric archaeology. As the tired Team conclude a gruelling three-day dig, they manage to complete the jigsaw, and unveil an unusual site that dominated the landscape for over 1000 years and was the ultimate statement of power and status.

This year’s guests include: Lord Ashdown, former leader of the Liberal Democrats Karren Brady (Baroness Brady of Knightsbridge), one of Britain’s best known businesswomen Linford Christie, Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European Gold Medal sprinter Shane Lynch, founder member of Boyzone In this first episode Boyzone’s Shane Lynch talks to Fern about how faith in God saved him from the occult.

Shane is a member of one of the most successful boy bands in history, with a career spanning 22 years. Plucked from obscurity, the young car mechanic from Donaghmede was famous at 17. But music industry pressures led him down a dark path into the occult. Shane tells Fern how he laid his demons to rest and how his Christian faith then helped him through the death of best friend and band member Stephen Gately.

Ireland With Simon Reeve BBC2, 20.00 In episode two, Simon’s journey begins at the spectacular Giant’s Causeway - a place of myth and legend - before travelling to nearby Rathlin Island, where a small island community are experimenting with an enterprising form of underwater food production: kelp farming. Simon encounters tourists from all over the world at The Dark Hedges in Co. Antrim - one of the many locations in Northern Ireland that feature in the tv series Game Of Thrones.

Arriving in Belfast for the Twelfth of July weekend he finds out why the traditional celebrations, with huge bonfires and marching bands, mean so much to some, while being so unwelcome to others.

Driving out of Belfast, Simon crosses the border into the Republic of Ireland and follows one of Ireland’s great coastal routes.

In Drogheda he discovers evidence that Oliver Cromwell may not have been responsible for the atrocities he has been accused of for centuries. He arrives in Dublin for the commemorations of the Easter 1916 uprising that lead to Irish independence - and gains an insight from a descendant of one of the rebels.

Guy Martin: Last Flight of the Vulcan Bomber Channel 4, 19:30

The last airworthy Vulcan bomber, XH558, flew for the final time to great fanfare in October this year. This iconic plane played a pivotal role in protecting UK interests in the post-World War II era as the first nuclear deterrent, and was also responsible for the longest raid in British military history when it successfully attacked enemy targets in the Falkland Islands. Mechanic Guy Martin is given unprecedented access to the aircraft, helping a select group of engineers prepare it for an ambitious farewell tour around of Britain.

Following on from the battle, Robert and Max don’t know whom to trust, Robert and Max follow the only lead available: distant Jekyll relatives living in the remote countryside. However, when they call on the Jezequiel family they are less than welcome, they are warned of a black dog by the local pub landlord which is a local legend. Their host, the widow Renata seems distant and unwelcoming. She comes and goes late at night and wears no shoes, but in spite of these idiosyncrasies Max takes a shine to her. That is, until a spate of disappearances and livestock deaths point to the local legend of a fearsome black dog stalking the countryside. Robert’s medication is making him erratic and he soon gets it into his head that Renata’s dead husband and missing son Brant may have been killed. The question is how and why? As they investigate further they uncover a family chapel that brings lots of unanswered questions.

In episode two Dara O Briain visits Ocado, one of Britain’s largest and most high-tech online food shopping centres. With robots and 15 miles of conveyor belts, Dara sees the computer-controlled machinery in action, as one million items a day are packed from this location alone.

In Canada, Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett visits the world’s largest farm in terms of numbers of livestock. It’s home to hundreds of millions of crickets, farmed for food. Rich in protein and vitamins - could creepy crawlies be the food of the future? Back in Britain, greengrocer Chris Bavin sees if the British public will bite as he offers insects up as an appetising snack.

Mechanical engineer Shini Somara visits a futuristic supermarket prototype where robots stack the shelves. She also explores the future for dieting - could tech help us in the battle with the bulge? Shini tries out some experimental technology that changes the way we see our food, making us feel fuller faster.

Angela eats a meal cooked by RoboChef, a robot that precisely copies the actions of the chef and can work all night in the kitchen without needing a break. She also tests out a very chatty kitchen gadget - a talking frying pan that will instruct you through every step of cooking.

Dara considers food fraud - do you know if your food is what it says it is? Remember the horsemeat scandal? Dara explores how science could be used effectively to stop food substitution and meets a scientist whose forensic techniques analyse food quickly to detect its contents.

David Chipperfield: A Place to be? Internationally renowned British architect David Chipperfield puts substance before image, and isn’t interested in a building’s iconic presence on a skyline. ‘How many squiggles can a city take?’ he once asked.

He has been described as classical, minimalist, simple, but if there is a word he would like to apply to his architecture, it is ‘humane’.

Alan Yentob talks to Chipperfield about his breakthrough in Berlin, his love of the city and its history and the 11 years spent on the transformation of the Neues Museum, his ‘masterpiece’.

After successes at the Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield, and Turner Contemporary Margate, he is now embarking on his most prestigious project ever, a new gallery for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

This Is Tottenham BBC2, 21.00

In the 30 years since the Broadwater Farm riots, Tottenham has seen more than its fair share of national headlines - from the missed child abuse scandals of Baby P and Victoria Climbie, to the shooting of Mark Duggan and the 2011 summer riots. Taking the temperature of one of Britain’s most vibrant, diverse and notoriously challenging constituencies, this candid film shines a spotlight on the lives of those who live in Tottenham today.

For the first time viewers are given a front-row seat to watch one of the country’s busiest MP surgeries in action, with cameras granted behind-the-scenes access to the fortnightly advice surgery run by Tottenham’s local MP David Lammy.

Tottenham-born Lammy spent much of his childhood on the Broadwater Farm Estate, and he is witness to the challenges that, 30 years on, exist in the wake of the riots. Today, his MP surgery deals with thousands of problems each year, and he never knows what or who will come through his door next.

There’s Ruth, a heartbroken mother desperate to find out what has happened to her missing son Ambrose. He disappeared in mysterious circumstances and it’s causing huge tensions between the local black community and the police. Then there’s Kofi, a hard-working immigrant from Ivory Coast whose entire family is packed into a one bedroom flat and whose wife is dying of liver cancer.

Another visitor to Lammy’s surgery is Shantel, a charismatic 22 year-old who wants to start university - but her temporary residency status means she is not eligible for a student loan, even though she has lived here since she was nine. We also meet the unforgettable Koli, a funny and feisty young Muslim mum who is fighting for her son’s life-saving operation - and won’t take no for an answer.

From wrongful arrests to parking problems, immigration issues to regeneration backlashes, this one-off film showcases the extraordinary spirit of Tottenham’s ordinary residents. It’s a long, long way from Westminster.

Medical documentary series. In each episode a family invites a GP into their home to investigate every aspect of their lives. The doctor spends time with the D’Arcy family in Shropshire. Mum and dad Dotti and Russ have a love of fast food and shock the doctor with a regular family meal.

Dotti discovers she has type 2 diabetes, and Rangan’s mission to correct her diet leads him to unravel the root cause of the family’s relationship with food. Rangan discovers that Russ’s firefighter career is more deskbound than active, so encourages a radical lifestyle change. The whole family’s health is interlinked, and the doctor encourages them to transform their health by making simple lifestyle changes - involving every aspect from the moment they wake up to the way they sleep at night. At the end of his intervention, the family undergo a series of tests to measure just how much impact the doctor’s suggested lifestyle changes have had on their health, with significant results.

MasterChef: The Professionals BBC2, 20:00 The last of the quarter-finals of the culinary competition. The six best chefs from the week’s heats come together to compete in two challenges set by judges Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti.

In the pastry invention test, the chefs have an hour and 30 minutes to create one dish from a selection of ten sweet ingredients including peaches, champagne, pecan nuts and pudding rice.

After tasting the dishes, the judges send the weakest two chefs home.

The remaining four chefs now face one of the toughest rounds of the competition. In just one hour and 15 minutes, they must serve up an exceptional two-course menu to three of the country’s biggest restaurant critics, as well as Marcus and Monica. After a tough session in the kitchen, one more chef’s ambitions will be thwarted when they are sent home, leaving the dreams of the three remaining chefs well and truly alive as they continue on into knockout week.

By Vanessa Vee IF you are contemplating doing something a little different for Christmas, why not put the beautiful city of Barcelona down on your list of considerations?

If you don´t know much about the city at this time of year, then I can, hopefully, give you some interesting ideas to make the most of your festive break, as well as provide some basic information for those who have never been there.

With regular direct flights from Tenerife and also the UK if you want to meet up with family and friends - it is a good option for a short break that doesn’t take up too much travelling time.

Most shops will be open up to Christmas Eve, but be warned that many of them may close for business in the early afternoon and will not

The touch of festive magic

re-open until Boxing Day. Why not shop with a difference and gain a really special experience by heading to the Feria de Santa Lucia, right outside the cathedral.

Although not as sophisticated as those in Germany, it is a real treat and with more than 300 stalls, it oozes Catalan tradition.

There’s a traditional fair, with countless Christmas trees, decorations, figurines; in fact, everything Christmassy you could possibly imagine, as well as carol-singing, dance and theatre performances, together with various children’s activities.

You can’t miss the four, huge, solar-powered, decorated Christmas trees, which stand up to 12 metres high. These work by storing the power of the sun during the day for charging, then treating you to a fabulous nocturnal

spectacle as the trees light up.

As Barcelona is a large tourist centre, you can expect most restaurants to stay open

throughout the festive period, allowing plenty of time for you to check out some of these fantastic eateries available.

Most of the city at-

tractions will be open on Boxing Day, but be aware that on Christmas Day itself, pretty much everything will be shut.

And don’t expect to see the white stuff on your mini-break because it hardly ever snows in the city. And even when it does, the chances of seeing snowmen are remote because it’s unlikely to settle.

On Christmas Day, even with many attractions closing, there’s no chance of being bored.

Make sure you visit the port for the annual Copa Nadal, a traditional Christmas swimming competition dating back to 1907.

Wander the streets and view the carefully-built nativity scenes dotted around. The Barcelona Christmas lights, called “Els llums de Nadal”, run over a total distance of around 85km. They will be switched on any day now, and will finish

on Kings Day - 6th January.

The fabulous Montjuic magic fountain is also part of Barcelona’s Christmas lights and, on weekend evenings in December, you can enjoy a free, special waterand-music show. But do remember to wrap-up warm!

I have touched slightly on just a few ideas for your visit but, believe me, there is so much to do - and a good time will be had by all.

Driving-licence exchange

THERE has been a lot of publicity regarding new laws coming into force regarding foreign driving licences.

And, as we approach the end of 2015, the DGT amnesty introduced in March concerning fines - and the time allowed to get paperwork in order - will expire on New Year’s Day. There is no doubt that fines will be implemented by the Guardia Civil Tráfico department, and no excuses will be accepted.

Full, and detailed information was pub-

lished by the department when this amnesty was introduced, and I have covered this subject extensively this year for the benefit of existing and potential clients.

So you’ve had plenty of time to prepare and present the necessary paperwork for verification, if necessary, and to complete your exchange for a Spanish driving licence.

It is important to remember that as the deadline approaches, so does the Christmas period, in which things

slow down. And I have been advised that there will be zero tolerance.

If your driving licence has an indefinite date, or has longer than 15 years left to run on it, and you have been legally resident in Spain from before 19th January, 2013, you should have already exchanged your foreign version for a Spanish licence.

If, however, you became a resident after that date, you will have had two years after the official date of first residency to complete the

exchange. Also, if your licence has expired, or is about to, the law says you must renew it in your country of residence and, should this be Spain, you must renew/exchange it here for a Spanish licence.

A Spanish licence is a European licence and, though no address is displayed on it because of data protection laws, it is, in effect, exactly the same as your British version, but printed in Spanish.

It can be used in exactly the same way as your UK one and is valid in

all European countries for driving and hiring a car.

If you are stopped after 1st January and simply deny you live in Spain, you are likely to find yourself in more trouble.

There are many advantages to holding a Spanish licence, such as producing it for ID purposes when using a credit card - most shops and other establishments accept this as proof of identity.

Also, if you are stopped by police and are issued with a fine, they will already have your information on computer, including your NIE number, address, etc.

They will issue you with a fine but will not demand it be paid on the spot, as a foreign driver would. And you will be given time to pay. If you

do cough up within this time - it’s normally payable at any Santander Bank or Correos office - you should receive a 50% discount.

Any points applied will also be applied directly to you on the system, which you are able to check online on the DGT website.

I cannot stress strongly enough that for those who have started the process, either directly, with us or with any other person, it must be completed before the end of the year.

If you are actually resident and have not started the process, it is in your interest to get cracking now.

BEING blonde isn’t easy, and choosing the right shade can be a nightmare.

Yet it’s by far the most popular salon shade.

L O N EL I N E S S won’t just make you miserable ... it could also suppress your immune system and knock years off your life.

So why do most women crave this colour, and why has it been seen on many iconic women?

Think of a famous movie or pop star and chances are that she is blonde, or has been at one time.

Being blonde can create a storm and bring any woman plenty of attention, but it has to be done correctly or it can look cheap and/or draining to the skin.

This is why choosing the correct shade is better left to a stylist, who will “colourmatch” your blonde to your skin tone, your eye shade and even the colours of clothes you wear.

Research shows that those who feel the most isolated in later life are almost 15% more likely to die early than those who feel the most wanted and needed.

And this makes loneliness twice as bad for health as obesity!

A University of Chicago team says that being cut off from others can weaken our ability to fight viruses, as well as pushing blood pressure into the danger zone for heart attacks or strokes. And raising the odds of depression setting in.

The team’s study on the physical effects of isolation could also help explain why it can become so entrenched.

that certain immune system genes - called CTRA genes - were more active in those who said they felt very lonely.

This suppressed the immune response that wards off viruses, while increasing inflammation - a process linked to numerous health issues, from heart disease to frailty.

Experiments on macaques showed that the changes had real consequences for health, with a suppressed immune system allowing the monkey version of HIV to grow faster in their blood and brain.

Interestingly, the relationship appears to go both ways. Loneliness didn’t only lead to more active CTRA genes, because having more active CTRA genes also increased the odds of being lonely in the months to come.

Scientists are unsure why this is the case, but it may be that the immune changes make people more anxious and reduce motivation, making it harder for them to socialise.

The finding could help explain why people often find it so hard to break out of a lonely lifestyle.

The research comes as Britain faces the twin challenge of an ageing population and an increasinglyfragmented society, in which many people communicate over the internet rather than face-to-face.

An estimated one million elderly Britons are chronically lonely, with many not seeing

or even speaking to someone every day. It is thought that almost 25% of those aged over 75 who live alone go whole days without any human contact - faceto-face or by phone.

The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, and it highlights that loneliness can also disrupt sleep – leaving people feeling lethargic the next day and more likely to rely on sleeping tablets.

Researcher John Cacioppo suggests the lonely try to make friends through charity work, such as reading to the blind or - if still young enough - helping coach a children’s sports team.

He said: “You need to start small. Don’t focus on trying to find the love of your life, or reinventing yourself, all at once. Just dip a toe into the water.”

Finding company in a beloved pet may also help.

Professor Cacioppo has shown that having a dog makes people feel less isolated, yet other animals, such as cats, lizards and hamsters, have no effect.

It is thought that dog-owners may benefit from the exercise and social interaction that comes with taking their pet for regular walks. And dogs also tend to be highly-affectionate animals.

And despite focusing his latest research on older adults, the professor believes that loneliness is bad for the health, regardless of age.

Call these ladies what you will, but there’s still not enough fashion around to suit, or even fit, the lady who doesn’t slot into today’s category of what fashion designers believe women should look like.

The average UK size is now a 16, yet you try to find fashionable clothing if you’re in this range or larger.

Many shops stop at Size 14, and you’d be pushed to find 16 in most stores.

Larger ladies still want to look and feel good in their workwear, as well as in their casual and evening wear. Yet it must be a nightmare for them to shop for clothing they love but can’t find it in their size.

When searching the stores looking for outfits, you should try to steer clear of any fabric that will “cling” be-

cause it will enhance those parts you may want to cover.

Instead, opt for floatier materials that move with you. And if you’re top half is bigger than the lower half, create an illusion by keeping that section simpler, and then add your patterned details to the top.

Dresses should come below the knee, or it might give your figure a more “pear” shape. And do go for patterns rather than plain as this, too, slims down the figure.

You shouldn’t feel you have to cover

Heels should be high, as this elongates the leg and creates a more elegant look, and accessories should be “statement” pieces and nothing too “dainty”.

and are the right height to do their job, while still allowing for cleaning the floor.

Of course, a lot will depend on the material you choose as fabrics can range from eight euros a metre to more than 80!

to take some time to consider your options.

Christmas shoppers given fayre warning

SAN Miguel Lions Club members are holding their annual Christmas Fayre on Sunday (6th Dec), outside their Charity Shop in The Dip, Costa del Silencio.

It’s nearly at the end of the main road, Ave Jose Antonio Tavio, just before the island on the left, coming from the Las Galletas end. And for those looking for a bargain - or another one if you’ve been before - the shop will also be open.

The event, which begins at 11am and goes on until 3pm, features stalls, games, snacks and drinks, plus entertainment. And if you wish to display a stall, you are most welcome.

All money raised will go towards the Lions’ annual Disadvantaged Children´s Holiday Project, which takes place

Safeguarding your own pets

By micro-chipping your cats, you’re giving them the best chance of being found and returned safely should they wander off.

A recent study showed that under 2% of cats without micro-chips were returned home.

However, if a cat is micro-chipped, the return-to-owner rate is 20 times higher.

All cats should wear a safety collar, with tag

and a contact number, but only a micro-chip provides permanent ID that cannot fall off, be removed, or become impossible to read.

It costs about 20-30 euros which, over the life of your pet, is a small sum - and it won’t hurt your pocket any more than a routine vaccination.

Even if your pet is a house cat and never goes outside, a collar and micro-chip is just as important. It takes a second only for a cat to slip through an open door or window, especially in our climate.

Another silent killer TENERIFE Isla Sur Lions Club has arranged a Diabetes Awareness Campaign with the new British Medical Centre, to run for three weeks at its Costa del Silencio clinic in Coral Mar.

The nurse takes a blood sample, which will be analysed locally, and a report usually issued the same day.

The campaign, which began on Monday, finishes on Friday, 11th December, so just turn up at the clinic from Monday to Friday (911am). It costs 12 euros

and, most importantly, have nothing to eat or drink during the morning of the test.

The cost covers the syringe, the analysis and a small donation to the Lions Charity. The clinic gives its time for free. If a problem is detected, further discussion with the doctor will cost.

There are 3.2 million people in the UK affected by diabetes, and a further 630,000 who have the condition but aren’t aware of it.

It is a manageable condition, but, when not well-managed, is associated with serious complications, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, nerve dam-

Swallows’ cast after next big fund-raiser THE Swallows Drama group produce a play every year to raise funds for Cancer Research in Tenerife, and next year’s will be staged in March, which isn’t that far away.

And that is why director Mike Huntington has called a meeting in the Comodoro Aparthotel lounge this afternoon (Friday) at 2pm to discuss possibilities. It is situated on the Avenida Juan Carlos, near the Sunday Market.

There have been several suggestions, and Mike will bring along some samples. Most of the plays, which require a small cast, are

comedies. Last year The Boyfriend, featuring local artistes Karen Holcombe and Luke Carey in the lead roles, together with stars from The Sound of Musicals, attracted sellout crowds and, money-wise, topped 2013’s Oh What a Lovely War, which raised 1,700 euros.

New boys’ instant impression THE Direct Telecom Pool League lost Crown A this week, but their replacements laid down an early marker with the only shock in the first round of the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup.

Rewind Rewired, who start their Division Two campaign next week, served notice of their intent as they knocked Tenerife Hammers C out.

Hammers C have had a bright campaign, but they have started to wobble recently, and this 9-3 upset will hit confidence. At least Bobby Baker didn’t lose to any female op-

position this week.

All the other Division One sides eased past lower-league opposition, but Tenerife Pool Tables gave Exiles A a real match. It was tight all night and the Silencio crew just squeaked home.

Phoenix Potters dropped one frame only as they won the derby with Sabores.

Quote of the night came from Lorraine, who asked the old boys: “How do you pop your balls out?”

A smooth Palms A got past Hoppys A 102, with only Taliban and Kung Fu dropping frames. Terrace Roosters, though propping up the first tier, proved to good for Dreamers B, and it was the same story for The Phoenix at

Hoppys B, but Debbie did win two frames! Go girl!

The closest matches came from the samedivision clashes. In Los Cristianos, Bluebell A were 3-1 and then 4-2 up on Gaffers B in the all-Division One encounter.

Rich inspired the fightback for Gaffers and, when Wilson won frame 11, the great comeback was on.

However Mucker did Ben to set up a deciding frame, and then chinned Rich to steal a fine match 7-6.

It was just as tight for Bluebell B, who travelled to The Crown B and hit the ground running. With the scores level at 2-2, the Bluebell boys reeled off four straight frames. Joel got one back for the hosts and

the John made it 6-4.

Amazingly, Alex took frame 11 - and when Bounty Hunter Greg rolled in the black in frame 12, the scores were level. And a stunning comeback was completed when John beat Grant in the play-off.

Finally, there was a Torviscas derby in Malibu Park as Splash Bar hosted in-form Picassos.

Again it was all-square at 2-2 before the visitors took all four middle frames. And again, the home side fought back.

Chris, then Darren and Paul got it back to 6-5. Alas, Splash Bar couldn’t do a Crown as Ken beat Steve to send Picassos through.

It’s looking more like Magic Marti as the new Tenerife coach made it three games unbeaten with a deserved point against high-flying Cordoba.

Their manager, Tenerife legend Jose Luis Oltra, was always at his best when making a change. The season he got Tenerife promoted, Oltra won a plethora of points with shrewdlytactical changes and wise substitutions.

In Marti’s first match he brought on Omar,

who rewarded the boss with a late winner. Last weekend it was Nano, who came off the bench to grab a priceless, late goal which cancelled out Andone’s opener.

Apart from the point and the fightback, what was most pleasing was

looking at the team as they came off the field.

Jorge, Tomas Martinez, Nano and Aurtenetxe are all pups. Omar and Cristo started the match, and it’s clear to see the direction the side are going.

and Jorge, novices at this level, more than covered for the missing Carlos Ruiz, while Ricardo did all right for the also-suspended Alberto.

The league is ridiculously tight, and a win for Tenerife against Gi-

rona this weekend could push them into the top 10.

Sides are nicking points off of each other, and there doesn’t seem to be a stand-out side.

who on paper have the best XI, are rock-bottom.

It will not take much winning, and confidence could well be the key.

On Sunday, Tenerife showed their spirit to take a point and, with a young offence, they should have the legs deep into the season.

This weekend, the wonderfully-inconsistent Girona visit Santa Cruz. I stopped trying to predict them ages ago, and I never bet on any match they play.

A few weeks ago, they played Osasuna off the park and came away with a fine 1-0 away win.

They followed that with poor 1-0 defeats at the hands of Lugo and Alaves, only to batter Albacete 3-0 last Sunday!

They did this with just 39% of the ball, and with four shots on target.

AS we returned to League action last Friday, the six Division One matches conspired to produce the complete mixed bag of results, with three teams hitting eight, and three teams winning their matches right at the death!

Boothen Army left

no stone unturned as they claimed all the points from Palms Sports Bar, meaning a swift return to the top of the league and back above Phoenix, who were given a stern test by Hoppys Bar. This tie couldn’t claim to be the League’s best advert as there were almost as many missed doubles as goals let in by Aston Villa.

Finally, two of the division’s draw specialists, Naughty Nautas and Marilyns, lined up to do battle at Camping Nauta ... and guess what? Yup, they drew.

Trevor’s high-fives in Vegas IT was great to see the Premier League back in action after the international break, and even more pleasing was that most players returned to their clubs without any knocks or injuries.

It meant most managers in the Oasis FM Fantasy Football League had full squads to choose from, although that doesn’t make picking a team any easier.

And it was another weekend that highlighted just how much

ground some teams have made up on others, and how close the League really is this season.

Sunderland finally scored an away win and, on the back of this, had two players in the point-scoring team of the week.

That was matched

by Leicester, Everton and Liverpool, with the other players coming from Stoke, Swansea and Spurs. Player of the week was Everton´s Ross Barkley, with 19 points.

There were some strong performances from players who had not been performing well recently, and this meant we had a change at the top of the table.

Trevor Passingham´s Passo Utd moved up with 81 points after a strong showing, taking the top spot courtesy of Frank Devany’s Baines On Toast, who

managed only 68 points.

With a good swing in his favour, Trevor now has an 11-point lead.

It was the perfect present for Trevor, who had set his side up before flying to Las Vegas to celebrate his 60th birthday! Wonder if he will remember to change his side as he swigs some Skol in a Vegas stripclub?

Team of the week goes to Dave Retberg and his Untouchables. They put in an impressive performance to take a strong 100 points, which also moved him nicely up the table into fourth spot.

His star performers were captain Lukaku, plus Barkley, Eriksen and Kane, who between them contributed 66 points.

This week, managers

have a conundrum. Do they keep faith with Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, or do they dump them because all scoring runs have to come to an end?

The winds of change?

By Adi Benson HANDS up who predicted Leicester to be top of the Premier League table after 13 games?

Anybody? No, I didn’t think so.

But it just goes to show how close the League is this season and, for a change, we might see a different top four come May.

Man City v Southampton

Man City will be licking their wounds after last week’s mauling by Liverpool, and the best way to get over a result like that is to get back on the pitch. They will relish being at home again after a mid-week Champions League game in Italy, but it will be a test of their fitness levels.

Saints were poor against Stoke and will be seeking to regain confidence.

Pelle is suspended, unfortunately, so they need another goalscorer, and the defence will have to be on their toes because Aguero is expected to start.

Prediction: Draw Last season: 2-0

Aston Villa v Watford

Villa, who achieved an unlikely draw against Man City before the international break, followed up with a poor performance against Everton.

If they are to survive this season, they need to be consistent. But there are question marks over the squad’s quality, and investment is again needed.

Watford are doing okay on their return to the Premier League and, barring any disasters, will still be there next season.

Had they concentrated more at the back, they might have taken a point against Man Utd. But they will have worked on that through the week and this is one

players will expect to win.

Bournemouth v Everton

It has not been a good season so far for the Cherries because they are firmly in the relegation zone. But they will take confidence from the fact that the teams around them are not picking up points and opening gaps. Home form is the key for their survival, and that’s where they need to gather points.

Everton are starting to look a good side and are moving up the table nicely. Even more impressive is their crop of youngsters. If they keep developing the way they are, Everton could be a team to watch over the next couple of years.

But Martinez needs to keep hold of them!

Crystal Palace v Newcastle

Palace must be so disappointed with their Sunderland defeat, especially at home, where they have been so strong this season. But this game has an extra edge because manager Alan Pardew will want to ensure he is on the winning side against his former club. He will urge his team to attack early and, with their pace, they will cause problems.

The vultures are circling

over Newcastle boss Steve McClaren, and you can understand why. He was given money to spend in the summer - which previous managers didn´t have but his team and players are just not performing.

Another defeat here and it could be all over for him.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-1

Sunderland v Stoke

The Black Cats finally got an away win this season and moved a step closer to the safety zone. They will be aware that a win could take them away from the relegation places, but they know they will have a fight on their hands.

They still look shaky at the back but, if they put as much effort in as they did against Palace, they might be able to build on the win. Stoke started the season slowly but have recently started to climb the table. I suggested they go back to their old style and it has worked.

And with Bojan now back, they can also add a little creativity. This is a game they know they should win.

Leicester v Man Utd

The Foxes are top of the league and Jamie Vardy now has 10 goals from 10 consecutive

games! But apart from Arsenal, who beat them comfortably, they haven’t faced any of the other so-called big sides. This is a huge test for them and will give an indication of whether they can keep pace at the top.

United have not looked the most attractive of sides this season, but a slight change in tactics against Watford saw a much better performance - certainly a lot easier on the eye. This game has an additional incentive because if United win, they will go top of the league.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 5-3

Tottenham v Chelsea

Spurs are the dark horses for me in the title race. They have been putting in some assured performances, and Harry Kane is back among the goals. They have a really solid backline, which enables them to put together strong, attacking play, and they are proving difficult to beat.

Chelsea got back to winning ways at last, but it was by no means a good performance against Norwich.

I feel they will struggle to make the top four, even if they bring in new recruits during the transfer window because the damage has already been done.

It is looking more and

more like Jose´s last season at the Bridge!

West Ham v West Bromwich

West Ham really do blow hot and cold. One week they look really good, and the next they are poor. It’s all good and well beating the top teams, but you also have to beat the teams below you, and that is where they have struggled. This will be another tough game because the visitors have been playing well.

West Brom will be full of confidence after beating Arsenal, but they mustn’t get too cocky. They are hard to break down at the back, which is what we expect from a Tony Pulis team.

But they also have a little creativity about them, and this causes opponents problems as they can’t see it coming.

Norwich v Arsenal

The Canaries will feel a little unlucky after a narrow defeat by Chelsea, especially as they know they have to see off the teams around them in the league! A home fixture against the Gunners was probably not what they wanted next, but they will have studied

the game plan West Brom used. If they can execute it, they might get a point.

Arsenal need to get back to winning ways after last weekend’s setback, but they have picked up yet more injuries.

With a fully-fit squad, I would have them as title maybes, but it looks like being another frustrating season for their supporters.

Liverpool v Swansea

It was a bold move

by Jurgen Klopp to discard a recognised striker against Man City, but the gamble paid off as they went three goals up inside 30 minutes. I would expect a different set of tactics again as they are at home, but they will play the same, high-pressing game and look for early goals.

Swansea are victims of their own success over the last couple of years.

They have probably over-achieved and are struggling a little this season, which is why the knives are out. A relegation battle isn’t on the cards, but they need to up their game and the players need to respond. If Gomis can rediscover his scoring touch, the points will come, and I still believe they will finish in the top half.
