Britian bombs Spain watches Continued from front. Prime Minister David Cameron, despite opposition from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, secured a huge Parliamentary vote of confidence from MPs after Wednesday’s heated, 11-hour debate. Within hours, RAF bomber jets had joined France and the US in the international aerial campaign against Isis terrorists. The pilots, on overnight stand-by awaiting the verdict, took off from a Cyprus base yesterday (Thursday) morning and were on the attack a few hours later. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that four Tornado jets had carried out their first air strikes. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said they had hit the Omar oilfield in eastern Syria which, he added, was “a key infrastructure target” from which I.S derives over 10% of its oil revenue. But he warned that there was still plenty of work to be done in “helping to cut off the flow of arms and oil to these terrorists”. The RAF raids will continue in eastern and northern Syria for “the next few days and weeks”, confirmed the Defence chief. The Parliamentary verdict arrived after a marathon discussion saw insults flying all over a packed House of Commons, and Cameron referring to I.S militants as “medieval monsters”. In the end, he won the day - and night - as politicians from all parties rallied to his cause, lending their support to the Tories. The tense, often-heated debate, had much of the UK population arguing about the merits of joining the international campaign of airstrikes. Yet despite the Tory Prime Minister’s earlier fears, the voting wasn’t even close, with a final margin of 397-
223, including around 57 Labour MPs openly defying Corbyn’s antiwar position. A separate amendment seeking to block air-strikes was defeated by 390 votes to 211. Anti-war protesters outside Parliament booed when they learned of the result, which followed Cameron’s resounding plea that Britain must strike the militants in their heartland and not “sit back and wait for them to attack us”. During the debate, the PM caused uproar when he described opponents of the plan as “terrorist sympathisers” and he refused point-blank to apologise, despite a dozen or so pleas to do so. The protesters had argued that Britain’s entry into Syria’s crowded airspace would make little difference, and said Cameron’s military plan was based on wishful thinking, which overlooked the messy reality of the Syrian civil war. Cameron, who had long wanted to target I.S in Syria, had been unsure of getting majority support in the House of Commons until now. He suffered an embarrassing defeat in 2013, when law-makers rejected a motion back-
ing attacks on Syrian President Bashar Assad forces. But the mood has changed dramatically following the 13th November attacks by I.S in Paris, which killed 130 people. Both France and the US had urged Britain to
join their air campaign in Syria, and Cameron said the UK should not let its allies down. He argued that Britain was already a top target for terrorist attacks, and that air strikes would reduce the group’s ability to plan more
Paris-style carnage. “Do we work with our allies to degrade and destroy this threat, and do we go after these terrorists in their heartlands, from where they are plotting to kill British people?” he asked. “Or do we sit back and wait for them to attack us?” He insisted that attacking I.S was not anti-Muslim but “a defence of Islam” against “women-raping, Muslim-murdering, medieval monsters.” The Prime Minister was backed by most members of his governing Conservative Party, which holds 330 of the 650 Commons seats, as well as members of the smaller Lib-Dem party and others. Labour, the main opposition, was divided. Leader Corbyn, who represents the party’s left wing, spoke against what he called a “reckless and half-baked intervention”. But Hilary Benn, its foreign affairs spokesman, said Britain could not “walk by on the other side of the road” when international allies were asking for help against IS “fascists”. Britain already conducts air strikes against I.S targets in Iraq, and a drone strike launched in August killed two British I.S militants in
Syria. Authorities in the UK say RAF Typhoon and Tornado fighter jets, armed with Brimstone missiles capable of hitting moving targets, would bring highlyaccurate fire-power to the campaign, and help minimise civilian casualties. Barack Obama, the US President, welcomed the British vote to join the Syria air campaign, saying of the Islamic State group: “It is a global threat that must be defeated by a global response.” Critics claim British air strikes will make little practical difference, and that ground forces will be needed to root out the terrorists. But Britain has ruled out sending troops. For now! Meanwhile, Islamic State is to re-branded “Daesh” by the UK Government - because its hard-line leaders do not like the word. Cameron said the word would be used from now on in all official references to the fanatics. The term is already being used in Spain, where the Government is staging a watching brief. It was forced to issue a denial on media speculation that they would be helping with a military deployment, following the attacks in Paris. It also confirmed that neither France nor the International Coalition against Daesh have requested any form of increased contribution from the country. Spain is already actively participating in the International Coalition against Daesh in Iraq. It also maintains a defensive presence in Turkey, under the mandate of NATO. With the General Election just a few weeks away, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy doesn’t want the security or war issues to become a main story. This is why he is suggesting a re-evaluation of the country’s stance after the election.

Jobless tally rising again UNEMPLOYMENT has risen in Canaries over the last month, with 1,477 more people now out of work - a 0.60% increase from the previous month. It means, overall, that 248,639 people are unemployed, according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. But against the annual figures, the jobless tally fell by 16,746 people in the archipelago, representing a 6.31% drop, year on year. By provinces. the largest increase occurred in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with 1,353 more unemployed than October (1.17%), while in Las Palmas, it rose by 124 people (0.09%). As for sexes, the women continue to record the largest jobless figure, on 132,398, while there are 116,241 men unemployed in the islands.
In the prime sectors, Services and Construction continue to lead the number of unemployed people, with 185,560 and 31,158 respectively, while the Building saw a jobless fall of 318. But the Services had 946 more people unemployed. And in the recruitment sector, the Canary Islands reached 62,677 contracts, representing a fall of 4,740 (7.03%) compared with October, although the annual figure had an increase of 7,156 (89%) . In the country as a whole, the number of unemployed registered at the offices of the Public Employment Services (formerly INEM) fell by 27,071 people in November, up 0.65% from the previous month and reaching a total of 4,149,298 unemployed people.
Cabildo’s special students’ budget TENERIFE Cabildo plans to double its 2016 budget for scholarships involving students with special needs.
It will increase the aid for students with financial difficulties within

the Tenerife 2030 programme Innovation, Education, Culture and Sports, which focuses on the training as a pillar of Tenerife’s future society. José Luis Rivero, Minister of Education, Culture and Arts Units, stressed that the goal was for all kids in schools “to have equal conditions”. He said the scholarships to students with special needs were awarded to schools and not to households. Specifically, Rivero pointed out: “The centres themselves are those requesting such aid when they detect problems
in students, due to the lack of economic resources of their families. “In most cases, these grants are intended for the purchase of a hearing prosthesis, sight glasses, hearing aids or educational material.” The aim is to bridge the gap a child may have in respect of the income derived in their household. “The scholarships are aimed at incomes of under 10,000 euros per year at public schools and students in compulsory education (kindergarten, primary, and secondary),” said Rivero. In addition, the
amount of aid will depend on individual cases which the centre and the institution have studied. With this budget increase, the Cabildo expects to cover 100% of the demand the centres will request annually. Rivero said that in previous years, the Cabildo had been able to give just 70% or 80% of scholarships for students with special needs demanded by the various schools on the Island. He added: “There are many requests for such aid because of the difficult economic situation we have been experiencing in recent years.”
Canarian HIV testing late for nearly half the victims THE Canaries’ Ministry of Health marked World AIDS Day this week with the goal of reaching “Zero HIV” in the Islands.
THE Acidalio Lorenzo swimming pool in Santa Cruz is to get a 1.5 million-euro make-over, which will help improve the sport’s infrastructure in the capital, says the Cabildo.
The project should be rubber-stamped during a final meeting on Monday and Jose Alberto Diaz-Estebanez, Councillor for Infrastructure
and Works, said: “We have fulfilled the commitment and work will begin in March.” But sadly for swimmers, those who use the facility will have to wait about five months before they can swim there again. The Cabildo recently faced complaints about cold water from swimmers at the pool, which has been operational for more than 50 years. They want the pool heated properly because water temperatures can get rather low in the autumn and
winter months. The Autonomous Agency for Sports previously planned to use a series of thermal blankets, costing some 200,000 euros. But the blankets did not meet with the required health regulations for pools, and weren’t within the rules of the Sports Council of the Ministry of Education and Science for competitions. The municipal pool will now be given a new, hydraulic system which redistributes the water and warms it up as well.
In a statement to the regional government, Jesus Morera unveiled the campaign slogan Zero HIV in the Canaries. All its actions and programmes are aimed at reducing the number of new infections, promoting prevention, early diagnosis and conducting rapid HIV testing in the islands. Some 43% of people diagnosed for the first time with the infection in 2014 showed signs of delayed diagnosis, according to figures published this week. Specifically, of the archipelago’s 295 cases of new infections, 85.4% of transmission was
sexual - 73.4% had a homosexual transmission mechanism and the remaining 26.6% were heterosexual. In addition, injecting drug-users accounted for 3.1% of new infections in 2014. The age group most affected in men and women was between 30 and 39; however, this age range dropped to 20-29 years among men. Seven out of 10 new infections detected in the
Canary Islands in recent years, belonged to male, Spanish, aged between 20-39, who acquired the virus through unprotected sex with other men. Similarly, the Regional Ministry said the number of patients under surveillance in the hospitals of the Canaries in 2014 was 5,179, with a cost of 31.2 million euros in consumption of anti-retrovirals.

Big-Four get-together MAYORS of the four municipalities housing the Canary Islands’ highest population have created a partnership they have called the ‘G4’. They will meet to discuss joint policies on employment, housing, trade and social policy. Augusto Hidalgo (Las Palmas), Jose Manuel Bermudez (Santa Cruz), Jose Alberto Diaz (La Laguna) and Carmen Hernández (Telde) held their first meeting this week to address the
needs shared by these four municipalities, which support 40% of the Canarian population. La Laguna Mayor Jose Alberto Diaz hosted the get-together and stressed the importance of sharing the problems experienced by these four cities, with “very high densities of population, with some social and urban problems”. He said these four municipalities are home to 47% of the entrepreneurial companies on
the islands, and are the “economic engine” of all the Canary Islands, raising their profiles to have a direct dialogue with the regional government and “bet on the development” of the islands.
Diabetes strikes the hardest in Canaries DIABETES kills nearly seven times more people in the Canary Islands than in Madrid, according to a new study. And of the one million men living in the islands, 385 die from the disease each year, while the figure is 174 for three million men in the Spanish capital. Professor Antonio Cabrera, co-ordinator of the Department of Preventive Medicine and
Public Health at the University of La Laguna, admits that he knows of no other health case in which you can say that, in one region, twice as many people die from one disease than in another region. And in this case, it is a seven-fold increase. The data comes from DARIOS study, which analysed mortality from 1981-2011, and has also studied 28,887 patients in Andalusia, the
Jobs tonic for unemployed
CABILDO President Carlos Alonso has announced that more than 150 million euros from its 2016 budget will be used as investment towards Tenerife’s job creation. Alonso advanced these figures during the presentation of the Economic Situation Bulletin, and to help the gradual drop in unemployment, he said, funding for employ-
ment will grow by more than 1.5m euros (45%). He also said there will be a specific promotion of female employment with 200,000 euros in the pot, and companies offering a child-care service for workers’ children will be subsidised. Regarding the “Barrios for Employment” project, he said its funds would be implemented in 25 districts.
Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, Murcia and Navarra. This epidemiological study was published in the Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice journal, the official organ of the International Diabetes Federation. Prof Cabrera said there were “unprecedented” things, like the fact that the death of women for diabetes in the early Eighties of the last century was 20% higher in the Canaries than in Andalusia. But today, that mortality is 400% higher. Diabetes deaths fell across Spain over the last two decades of the 20th Century, including women from the Canary Islands. But from the 21st century, we reached “the epidemic wave of obesity” as a population as the Canary Islands, which, with a possible genetic predisposition to poor development of diabetes, “topped it off”, according to the Professor.
In the same vein, Jose Manuel Bermudez, Santa Cruz Mayor, said that the four big cities have “much to say in the development plan that aims to implement the regional government
over the next 10 years”. He added: “These four municipalities should be an important and fundamental part of the development of the strategic, as in the work plans of the government and the councils’ plan.” He was also adamant that the possibilities these municipalities have for creating employment goes beyond their inhabitants. Las Palmas Mayor Augusto Hidalgo said the four main regions have
accepted the “rules of the game” and of solidarity with the other towns. But he added: “We do not receive 40% of the economic resources, despite having 40% of the population. He pointed out that La Laguna, Las Palmas, Telde and Santa Cruz bore the greatest pressure of traffic and administrative infrastructures, because they are the places where thousands of people from other localities go to work every day.

‘We’ll lower Granadilla in good jobless total’ health, financially THE regional government plans to reduce the number of long-term unemployed from 210,000 to 25,000 in the next 10 years.
It aims to do so via the Plan of Development and Cohesion of the Canary Islands (Pdcan), for the 20162025 period. This programme will be funded from the Traffic Enterprises (ITE) tax, which the State will not pour into the national coffers. In fact, the money will stay in the archipelago, and is worth 160m euros annually. In addition, the plan foresees short-term investments, creating 3,000 direct and indirect jobs, and 5,000 annually from the fourth year. It will have an impact of 0.7% of the Canary Islands’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first year. Canaries President Fernando Clavijo, who presented a preview of Pdcan to the media this week, said the impact
GRANADILLA City Council, which has improved its finances over the last few years, is among the healthiest of Canarian regions, according to a Canary Municipal Fund report. Mayor
on GDP in the long term would be 1%. And he indicated that it would facilitate the Islands’ economy to grow 3.5% next year. Clavijo, whose initial proposals for local jobs will come into effect during the first half of 2016, said: “The ultimate goal is to strengthen economic growth and job creation in the archipelago.” The Government will review annually the achievements and progress of Pdcan, the results of which will be transferred to the regional Parliament, together with a report of possible improvement measures.
Jaime
González Cejas, said the report “shows a very positive development in the financial and budgetary management of the local administration.” He added: “Our accounts are in line with the current financial situation in the times we live, and this is great for Granadilla. It’s something few municipalities of the Canary Islands can boast about.” Granadilla last year
found net savings of 13.3%, while reducing its long-term debt by 6% to 36.8%. By law, the limit is 70%, and this demonstrates the area’s prudent 2014. The Regional Government’s annual report concludes that Granadilla has some positive developments with regard to financial and budgetary management in relation to the figures from 2013.
Clavijo said it was not a “fixed” plan, and could be changed after the evaluations were submitted. He also gave an assurance that “the smaller islands would have more investment”, and said the government expected to recover about 60% of the investment reached in the income from state, regional and municipal taxes. As for employment policies, higher bonuses for those hiring is proposed, with programmes to improve training for adults with low levels of education, plus employment plans for those households with all inhabitants jobless.
Food banks going bananas Council-house chaos reigns SOCIAL housing is common in the UK, but it seems that the idea to add more “council” houses and apartments has not really taken off here. And it’s not for lack of demand. Earlier this year, the local government decided to award grants for rental housing to those in dire financial straits. But to date, none has been issued because a “huge” number of people have requested help, said Patricia Hernandez, Vice-President of the Canary Islands Government and Employment, Social Policy and Housing Minister.
She said there had been 11,000 applications, while her Government’s budget was for just 850,000 euros. This has angered opposition parties, who complain that the Canarian Government is dragging its feet after initially setting a 30th September deadline for resolving the issue. This has now been extended to 31st March next year, but the delay is, of course, causing even more pain for those in difficult financial situations. But Patricia Hernandez insisted she was not making excuses for the delay.
MILLIONS of excess bananas could be heading for food banks throughout the Canary Islands, or simply dumped!
Narvay Quintero, the Canaries Agricultural Councillor, together with the region’s banana producers, is seeking alternatives to discarding the vast excess production (pica). The Councillor says that although it is a legitimate action, it’s not “socially understandable” in 2015 to waste 11 million kilos of fruit. Quintero relayed his feelings during Parliamentary Committee to Podemus Party MP Francisco Déniz, who quantified the number of bananas thrown away in recent years at 42 million kilos, which, he said,
is not just “serious,” but an “indecency”, since the fruit is subsidised. But the Councillor said that discarding fruit because of oversupply is regulated by a 2007 EU rule of 2007, which justifies this action in the case of exceptional market conditions. A maximum 5% volume of the total production is allowed to be shed, although the Canaries has never reached this percentage. All European agricultural sectors have resorted to this possibility and the Canary Government, according to its Agriculture Councillor, cannot do much about it. That’s because, said Quintero: “It is regulated by the EU, and if producers brought us to court over this, they would win.” He added that although
this measure is legal, it is not normal for the volume of discarded bananas to exceed 11 million kilos, as has happened this year, compared with 700,000 tonnes in 2014. Quintero has subsequently met Asprocan and other producer organisations to “seek an
alternative to the pica”, such as allocating two million kilos of bananas to food banks. He added: “The problem is that the Canaries are not able to absorb the entire surplus, and transport costs to the mainland should be covered by the producers.”
‘Human’ skulls are found beside beach EIGHT half-buried skulls, suspected to be human, were uncovered by a snorkeller in shallow waters near a Spanish beach. They were found off the Els Palangrers beach, north of Barcelona, which is popular with divers and bathers. The swimmer alerted police on Sunday after-
noon, and it was later reported that long bones, which appeared to be femurs or tibias, were then pulled from the water by police divers. Officers are now examining the bones, which are said to be clean with no body tissue attached. It was not immediately clear how old they were.

Island cheese has that golden taste
The editor says...

Everyone wins with the mighty Binns... THIS week has been full-on! Another awful shooting spree in America, Oscar Pistorius finally being convicted of murdering Reeva Steenkamp - and the historic vote to bomb Syria.
So in these trouble times, we could do with a laugh, which is why I heartily recommend you catch Tom Binns at the Tenerife Comedy Club tomorrow night (Saturday). This will be Tom’s fourth visit, and I have a feeling it will be his last. He is about to go “big time”, and not a moment too soon. A genuinely nice person off stage, he has paid his dues on the circuit and is set to finally reap the rewards. In January, he starts filming his comedy series, which will be broadcast on BBC1 later in the year. That’s as big as it gets for a British comedian: Prime Time on the Beeb. The series will include his legendary creations, and some new characters. The latter includes “Psychic” Ian D Montfort. When Tom did this
set on his last visit to Tenerife, he was so convincing that dozens of people actually thought it was a real psychic show! Then there is Ivan Brackenbury, the hospital radio DJ. This set never gets old and I see, or rather hear, so many DJs in the Ivan character. Although, as Tom told me on Oasis Fm this week:“There is no real inspiration for Ivan he is a combination of many DJs. Well I guess he mostly resembles me from my time doing radio!” For both these acts on Saturday, Tom has new material. So even if you have seen him before, you will be still be tickled. And then there is the new string to his bow. I’m not going to give anything away, but I can tell you that Uncle Jim could steal the show. Straight after the gig, Tom flies to the UK to host the Variety Club’s annual Stag Night. Previous hosts read like a Who’s Who of British Comedy greats. For last-minute tickets, call 669 622 622. I urge you to catch Tom while you can.

NO fewer that 18 entries from the Canary Islands have been honoured in the 2015 World Cheese Awards competition in Birmingham, with Tnerife earning two gold medals.
Some 2,727 worldwide products were
judged, and the Guild of Fine Foods, which organised the event, praised the high standard of the Canarian participants. The two Canarian goldmedal-winning cheeses were Roque Grande Curd Goat Cheese (Gran Canarias) and Duro Puro goat milk cheese, from El Guanche Factory (Tenerife). Silver medals were awarded to Secreto del Majo Finca Uga (Lan-
zarote); Queso Viejo Goat Cheese Artisan Paprika-Montesdeoca (Tenerife); mixed cheese from sheep and goat by Buen Pastor (Gran Canaria); Farmhouse Curing Caideros Sheep Cheese (Gran Canaria); Maxorata semicurado paprika and pepper Maxorata curing by the Livestock Group (Fuerteventura). The last two reached a total of four silver medals to add to two awards
each in different categories. Bronze medals went to Semicurado White Mountain Cheese of Mountain Guatisea (Lanzarote); Pinko Finca Uga (Lanzarote); Curd Goat Cheese Pajonales Bolaños (Gran Canaria); Curado Tinache (Lanzarote); Curd Cheese Blanca Mountain Guatisea (Lanzarote) and Smoked Jersey Ovejita - both of Finca Uga (Lanzarote) and, finally, Curd Gofio cheese and Curd Goat Cheese Artisan Montesdeoca (Tenerife). Canaries’ Agriculture Minister Narvay Quintero, said: “These awards represent a recognition of the quality of production of the Islands, and the work of the daily effort farmers and producers make in the archipelago. “They richly deserve to be distinguished as among the best in the world. We salute them.”
Sex fiend nailed by DNA after 12 years THE killer of teenage model Sally Anne Bowman has been implicated in three brutal sex attacks in Spain, which happened before her death.
His DNA has linked him to the crimes for which a Dutchman has already served 12 years in jail. And now, Spain’s supreme court has accepted an appeal by Romano Liberto van der Dussen. It came after DNA evidence pointed to Mark Dixie, a Briton serving a life sentence for the 2005 rape and murder of 18-year-old Sally Anne in London. A court announced its decision to review the sentence handed down
to Van der Dussen for assaulting and attempting to rape a woman in the Costa del Sol resort of Fuengirola. It followed confirmation by Spanish forensic police that DNA testing of samples from the victim were compatible with Dixie’s profile. Van der Dussen, arrested in September 2003 in Fuengirola and imprisoned ever since, has always stressed he did not commit any of the three sexual assaults which occurred on the same August night that year. The first indication that Dixie’s DNA matched a sample found on one of the victims was included in a 2006 report, but Van der Dussen’s several attempts to appeal his convictions were turned down - until now!
In June, a Dutch lawyer told the media she had visited Dixie in a British jail and that the former chef, who had been living in Fuengirola at the time of the attacks, admitted to assaulting a Spanish woman. A legal firm, specialising in overturning miscarriages of justice, said in June that Dixie, in a statement, was “sorry for another person being in prison for such a long period for that rape”. The statement added that Dixie claimed he could not remember anything about the other two attacks. A new analysis of DNA evidence, carried out this year by the Netherlands’ National Forensic Investigations Agency, appeared to show that Dixie had carried out the sexual assault in
Fuengirola. The 2003 court ruling, sentencing Van der Dussen to 15 years, said the culprit of the three attacks was one man who had used the same “modus operandi”: all three women suffered severe beatings. The 42-year-old Dutchman will now be released as he has served 12 out of a total of 15½ years. He told Spain’s El País newspaper earlier this year that his time behind bars had caused him irreparable damage. “I am in psychiatric treatment,” he said. “I take medication for post-traumatic stress and suffer from multiple, psychological disorders. I have even lost my own dignity as a person. How can I believe in the justice system?”

Mayor’s praise for Lions after Las Nieves upgrade ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Social Welfare Councillor Isabel Fernández recently thanked members of Tenerife Lions Sur Club, whose donations have made extensive renovations possible to the borough’s Las Nieves children’s home.
They just can’t stop staying... OVERNIGHT stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (apartments, camp-sites, rural tourism accommodation and lodging) increased 12.3% in October. That totals over 7.9 million, with an average stay of five nights per traveller, and the Canaries ranks as a preferred destination, with 8.2 million over-nights - a 2.8% increase over October 2014. According to figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the overnight stays of residents increased by 24.6% in October, to approach 2.3 million, while foreign stays rose 8.1 %, surpassing 5.6 million overnight stays. Specifically, more than five million overnight stays in non-hotel accommodation accounted for EU travellers
- excluding Spanish and 676,293 overnight stays of tourists worldwide. In the first 10 months of the year, overnight stays in apartments, camp-sites, rural tourism and hostels nationally grew 4.4% over the same period last year. Throughout Spain, overnight stays in hotels, apartments campsites, rural tourism and tourist accommodation increased by 8.5% in October, against the same month in 2014. The main markets of all regulated tourist accommodation are the British (30.1% of nights spent by non-residents), German (24.4%) and France (7.5%). The Canaries is the preferred destination, followed by the Balearic Islands, with more than 6.2 million (+11.8%) and Cataluña, with 5.4 million (+ 8.3%).
The home, which can house up to eight children at any one time, cares for and offers a home for minors between the ages of 10-15 years who, for a variety of reasons, cannot be cared for in their parental home. It offers protection to children from all over the Island, and is operated by Adeje Council and the regional government department for minors and families. The centre works to give the unfortunate children stability
and a safe, well-organised place, in which they can mature and grow. In many cases, they are helped to re-establish relationships in a non-conflictive atmosphere, and taught life skills which help them grow as individuals, training them for a reintegration - into their family homes where appropriate, or into society in general. Mayor Fraga expressed his gratitude to the Lions’ representatives, which included
Mike Marshall, Norman Goodall and Prakash Udhwani, thanking their on-going commitment to solidarity. “In Adeje, we are very aware of the importance of sharing,” he said. “This home has made its contribution, too, and has helped rear people who now have a real alternative in life. “We welcome this and other donations, which, I believe, are proof that humanity has a future, and, as an administration, we are always here
to help initiatives such as this.” The renovations include modern furniture, perfectly adapted to the needs of young people, both in the bedrooms and the communal zones. The Las Nieves team operate under the direction of Inmeculada Hernández, and others instrumental in the project’s evolution include Juan Blas Matías, co,ordinator of Adeje’s Department of Health, as well as Margarita Álvarez and Itziar Osa.
Brit mum ‘filmed husband Prison staff are sexually-abusing daughter’ ‘living in fear’ THE Professional Association of Prison Officers (APFP) says its low staffing numbers are “beyond a joke”, and that the prison service is now at breaking point. It claims the understaffing has now reached a stage where its workers are living in fear of increasing attacks. The recently-established union strongly criticises the Government for not issuing the necessary contracts to cover recent job losses which, for various reasons, have occurred in the last two years. “Reducing the num-
ber of officials in all areas of the prison service leads to increased attacks on officers,” said a union spokesperson. “This is happening nationally.” There were protests at many prisons this week around the country, including Tenerife II, in the North. Guards say the situation is worsening as the budget and staff cuts hit hard. This, says the union, means the Islands are turning into an undesirable destination for officials and future guards.
A BRITISH woman living in Spain has been accused of participating in the sexual abuse of her daughter, along with her husband, who has since committed suicide.
The woman, remanded in custody awaiting trial, lived in a village near Malaga and became an official suspect in abuse of her daughter, now 11, over an eight-year period. The horrific details were uncovered when IT experts cracked encryption codes to access files inside the hard drive of
her husband’s computer. Police found 800 videos of sexual abuse inflicted on the child by the father, a resident in Spain, who hanged himself in jail after being arrested and imprisoned earlier this year. Guardia Civil sources said: “The mother watched and recorded the attacks against the girl.” The woman, who settled in the village in 2001, also gave birth to a son in late 2012, but police said there was no indication of him suffering abuse. Both children became wards of the Andalucian regional government after their mother was remanded. Her husband was detained in February after
she reported him to police, initially for assaulting her. But the investigation soon focused on the couple’s daughter. The husband, traced to the house of friends in Burgos, northern Spain, admitted having a bustup with his wife. But he refused, initially, to admit to accusations of child abuse. Only when IT experts from the University of Alcalá de Henares, near Madrid, decrypted his computer files did he break down. Investigators found 800 “disgusting” videos of the man with his daughter, who was abused from the age of three “in every way imaginable”. It was, said sourc-
es: “A house of horror.” The woman, who attended a nearby Evangelist church and posted videos of beach baptisms and Christian singing on her Facebook page, is accused of filming and participating in the abuse. Investigators also found videos of the couple in which they appeared naked with other children, whom they encouraged to mimic sexual acts being shown to them in pornographic videos. Some 60,000 child-porn files were found on the man’s computer, and case investigators suspect he was involved in a video-sharing paedophile network.

Madrid air pollution is a worry for inhabitants MADRID householders are the latest people to have their daily lives blighted by the failure of officials to control air pollution.
New emergency laws were enacted for the first time last month fol-
lowing a finding by the EU commission that the city’s air-quality plans were insufficient. Nitrogen dioxide reached almost double the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines in central residential areas during still weather on 12th13th November. Urban motorway speeds were reduced from 80-90kph
to 70kph (44mph) and city-centre parking was restricted to residents. The cap of polluted air that settles over Madrid is nicknamed la boina (the beret), but Spain’s capital is not alone in having pollution problems. Nitrogen dioxide limits were set in 1999 to be met by 2010, but the failure to clean diesel
Free Advice Centre The Free Advice Centre Tenerife offers a wealth of information about residing and working here in Tenerife. Consultations and referrals are free as the name suggests. Sue McDonald has been in business on the island for more than 25 years. Although she isn’t a lawyer or gestor, she says that if she can´t help you directly, she will certainly know someone who can! Very topical at the moment is the issue of mortgages and the possibility of an illegal clause that could lead to considerable rebates. For people who do have this clause in their mortgage document, (and you can call in for a free check to see whether you have), the first stage of getting the monthly repayments reduced is relatively straightforward, but getting a refund requires specialist assistance. Sue warns “By all means make the first approach yourself, but beware of signing something you don’t fully understand, as you may be signing away your rights to a rebate of thousands of euros.” As we approach the end of the year, the non-resident tax returns are also a high priority to get them paid on time and avoid a fine. Sue explains “Many non-resident property owners aren´t even aware that they should be making an annual tax return even if they don´t rent their property out. Maybe their estate agent or lawyer didn’t tell them, or maybe they´ve forgotten in the excitement of buying their new home. And of course, the Tax Office don´t send out reminders”. Admin systems are different here, and there is always the little matter of the language! FACT consultations are face-to-face and free, and you don’t need an appointment. If you do need further help, free referrals can be provided, saving you the trouble of finding someone to help, and with the benefit of an informed recommendation. Accountancy services from a very reputable company are also available, whether for individuals or for companies, offering a comprehensive legal, fiscal and labour service, and all co-ordinated from one convenient location in Las Chafiras. Get all the advantages of having a local accountant, but with the convenience of an English speaking contact and a local office for your paperwork or any queries. So whether you need an NIE number, tax or legal advice, or help with your utility bills or paperwork, call in and see Sue McDonald. It´s an ideal service for those little worries or issues that don’t merit an expensive consultation at a more official office! She is at the Free Advice Centre Tenerife office, inside the Wheeler Dealers premises in Las Chafiras, from 9.30am to 1.30pm, Monday to Friday.

exhausts in real-world driving means that cities throughout Europe have yet to comply fully. Madrid’s emergency plans also include increased (and free) public transport. And although this adds up to more buses, tests in Scandinavia and London show that modern buses can emit less nitrogen oxides than diesel cars. This is especially true when buses are full. At these times, bus engines work harder - but the hotter exhaust provides more energy for chemical reactions to scrub pollution. Scandinavian tests also show that diesel cars driven in cold weather (-7c) produce around three times more nitrogen oxide than they do in summer temperatures (23c). And that make it even harder for northern European cities to control their winter smog without restricting diesel cars.

Possible Isis recruiters held
TWO men and a woman have been apprehended in northeastern Catalonia on suspicion of being involved in a network for recruiting militants for the Islamic State group (Isis). The men, aged 32 and 42, who are from Morocco, shared an address in Barcelona. Investigators claim they used the internet and social networks to
disseminate “extremist ideology•” aimed at attracting followers to send to the Middle East and Afghanistan areas of conflict. A police statement also said a 24-year-old Spanish woman was arrested in Granollers. It said the woman, who had been radicalised, shared the same ideology as the extremists and was preparing to travel to Afghanistan.
Derelict building’s deadly awakening A MAN’S body was discovered inside the Hotel Tenerife Tours, a Candelaria building which was abandoned years ago.
It is unclear how the macabre discovery was made, but the incident enlivened a dreary afternoon as the public strained to get a view of the authorities in ac-
tion. Candelaria Local Police and Guardia Civil were at the scene for hours and, as you can imagine, the body was in an advanced state of decay. Autopsy results will take some time to reveal the cause of death. Some neighbours of the old hotel speculated that the death could have been drugrelated because the area had been a hangout for addicts for years.

Unions furious over shortage of teachers THE Canarian Government’s Education Ministry now has 715 fewer teachers following retirements this year, which has angered the unions.
In addition to addressing the specialities, such as the ageing workforce, unions also want the Government to consider the need to take into account a regional bias. Andalucia, for example has a severe shortage of teachers, yet there is a surplus in major cities. The crisis has prevent-
ed a proper review of teacher numbers. Today in the Canary Islands, there is a 20% shortage of teachers at all schools, and more than 30% in secondary education. Then there are problems recruiting “expert” teachers for subjects such as Chemistry. Nearly 30% of Geography positions are unfilled, along with history (28.67%) and mathematics (21.58%). In the Canary Islands, there are 189 vacant teaching positions in primary schools, closely followed by English teachers (27) and preschool (48).

Perfect weather, clear, hot and sunny … just how us ex-pats all like it here in Tenerife! 12dive have joined up with other community groups and businesses across the Island to organise a second beach-and-dive site clean-up next Saturday (12th December) at La Caleta, Costa Adeje, starting at 9.30am. We at 12dive are trying to team up with as many volunteer groups, businesses, local people and holiday-makers to bring to their attention the problem of litter on this beautiful Island of Tenerife. Through advertising and doing regular clean-ups, we hope to help educate as many people as possible on how to keep the place beautiful, safe and preserved for many years to come. By organising regularly-scheduled beach clean-ups throughout next year, we will raise awareness across the Island. In the previous such clean-up, we collected a total of 75kg of miscellaneous rubbish, all from a small stretch of the beach-and-dive site at Alcala. The waste was then taken to PIRS to be recycled or disposed of in the land-fill. Just think, if we managed that from one beach-and-dive site, on one clean-up, what we can all achieve by working together and doing at least six more in 2016! None of this would have been possible without the tremendous backing, support and sponsorship we received from everyone involved, especially donations of re-usable mesh bags and protective gloves from the Bomberos, and PADI project aware to collect the garbage in, so no new plastic bags are used. It is important to remove the rubbish, especially the plastics, as they are poisonous to sea life when ingested, often entangle the animals and remain in the ocean forever. Tenerife isn’t well-known for its scuba-diving, but it has some of the best in Europe. By opening people’s eyes to its incredible topography and fish life, and keeping the ocean clean and tidy, the Island could create a new wave of tourism, beneficial to everyone living here. We would like to invite anyone (diver or non-diver) who is interested in ECO projects, helping the local environment and meeting and socialising with like-minded people, to come down, roll up your sleeves, get involved and support a good cause. If you are interested in participating, sponsoring the up-and-coming Beach and Dive Site Clean-ups, want to report a fishing net on the beach or dive site, or would like to find out more, contact 12dive Manager Martin Cuthbertson at martin@12dive.com - or call the office and speak to one of our friendly team on 822 663 670.

Amazing drone’s delivery service A NEW hybrid delivery drone, supplied by online retail giant Amazon, can travel up to 15 miles at high speed.
In a video released by the company, a drone lands on a designated spot in a householder’s back garden. A flap underneath the drone opens up, and a package is deposited on the lawn. Amazon says the drone can fly around
obstacles, thanks to built-in safety features. It’s an attempt to appease regulators, who are generally resistant to the idea of drone delivery. This prototype is an octocopter with eight propellers, allowing it to take off and land vertically, like a helicopter. It also has wings and a ‘pusher’ motor, which means that once it reaches the recommended 400ft altitude, it can actually travel like a plane. This provides its 15mile range which, Ama-
zon hopes, will revolutionise the delivery system. Customers will receive a message when the drone is hovering overhead, so they can prepare for the package arrival. Draft regulations drawn up by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) say that flying beyond the line of sight is not permitted. But Amazon says that semi-autonomous flights in designated air corridors is the only way its system could work.

DIRECTOR JJ Abrams, has revealed that he finished the Star Wars: The Force Awakens film after working through the night at the weekend. He told a New Jersey audience on Saturday he was “at turns thrilled beyond words and terrified more than I can say” with under a month to go before the film is released. Abrams appearing at a charity event hosted by Stephen Colbert, said he was still finalising the seventh film in the franchise early that morning. “At 2.30 in the morning, we finished the mix of the movie,” he said. “I left with six very small, but important things that (still) need to be done.” He also confirmed that he had accepted criticism about his previous Star Wars films, and promised there would not be so much “lens flare” in this one.
“The Force Awakens will have some, but only when it’s unavoidable or necessary,” he promised. “This is not the movie for that. These are not the flares you’re looking for.” Lens flares appear in films as several star-
bursts, rings, or circles in a row across the image. The film will be released in the UK on 17th December, and a record number of tickets were sold for advance screenings when they were released last Friday.

AirAsia crash down to faulty gear - and crew THE AirAsia plane crash last December, which killed all 162 people on board, has been blamed on faulty equipment, and the crew’s response.
Indonesian officials say the aircraft’s rudder-control system malfunctioned four times during the flight - a fault said to have occurred 23 times in the preceding year. Investigator’s report added that the crew’s response contributed to the disaster. The Airbus A320-200, travelling from Surabaya to Singapore, crashed into the Java Sea on 28th December 2014. The wreckage was found days afterwards at the bottom of the Java Sea near Borneo. But only 106 bodies have so far been retrieved. Most of the passengers were Indonesian, and others on board included a French citizen, a Singaporean, a Malaysian, a Briton, and three South Koreans. Investigators initially indicated that stormy weather was a major factor, but they now say that had nothing to do with the disaster.
The new report, released after a year-long investigation by the National Transport Safety Committee, found that the soldering on a tiny electronic part in the system controlling the rudder was cracked, causing it to send four warning signals to the pilots. The crew tried to fix the problem by resetting the computer system, but this disabled the autopilot. They then lost control of the plane. It then entered “a prolonged stall condition that was beyond the capability of the flight crew to recover”,
‘James Bond’ wife is charged with a multi-million fraud MICHELINE Roquebrune, wife of superstar actor Sean Connery, has been charged with avoiding millions of euros in Spanish property tax. The charge relates to the 1998 sale of the couple’s 6.4m-euro Marbella property and, if convicted, the 86-year-old faces 2½ years in prison and a 16m-euro fine. Connery, the big screen’s first James Bond, has already been cleared in the case, which authorities have nicknamed “Operation Goldfinger”.
It is alleged that Roquebrune conspired with lawyers to hide profits from the sale of the house, named Malibu. The property sale, and subsequent disposal of 73 apartments built in its place, allegedly raised 53m euros. Local authorities had, it is believed, given permission for just five houses to be built. Among 16 other defendants appearing in court on related charges are former Marbella Mayor Julián Muñoz and Juan Antonio Roca, Marbella’s former Chief Planner.
said the report. Maintenance ground crews were aware of the problem because it had occurred 23 times in the past year, and resetting the system was one of several methods used previously to address it, added the report. It also said that inadequacies in the maintenance system led to “unresolved repetitive faults occurring with shorter intervals”. There appeared to be miscommunication between the pilot and copilot. And at one stage the pilot commanded, “pull down”, but the plane was ascending At another point, the two men appeared to be pushing their controls in opposite directions. The report does not apportion blame or liability, but is intended to help the industry avoid future accidents. Sribudi Siswardani, who lost her 31-year-old son, Bhima Aly Wicaksana, in the crash, told the BBC’s Indonesian service: “The report brought back all the trauma, grief and loss. I don’t want to be angry with AirAsia - what’s the use of anger? In the end, it will only hurt me and stop me from moving on.” She added: “We accept Allah’s plan for us. But I do want the government to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” Tony Fernandes, AirAsia’s Chief Executive,
said: “There is much to be learned here for AirAsia, the manufacturer and the aviation industry. “We will not leave any stone unturned to make sure the industry learns from this tragic incident.” Since the crash, AirA-
sia has carried out 51 measures to improve safety standards following the disaster, said the report. Meanwhile, an Airbus spokesman said: “We have just received the final accident report. We are now carefully study-
ing its content. With safety being top priority, Airbus is fully committed to push the safety track-record of our industry even further.” Families of the 162 people who perished have been awaiting the results of this investigation anxiously. Indonesian investigators did not release their preliminary findings earlier this year because, they said, they were under no legal obligation. The airline company will now have many questions to answer about why the aircraft was not better maintained, and why its pilots were not better prepared to handle these problems. The crash came at the end of a year of major air disasters, including the disappearance of MH370 and the shooting down of MH17 both flights operated by Malaysia Airlines.

Sugary-drinks: 20% tax is must, say Health advisers THE British Government’s Health Committee insists that a much harder line must be taken to tackle the “wholly unacceptable” children’s obesity problem.
Dr Sarah Wollaston, who chairs the Health Committee, told Sky News that the Government needed to be “bold and brave” to tackle Britain’s obesity problem - and not rely on healthy eating campaigns and promoting exercise. Health Committee members agreed in their official report that it
was time for a “far more ambitious” approach to the way the Government targets obesity. Their recommendations include: *Banning junk-food adverts before the 9pm watershed during TV programmes
*Greater controls to stop supermarkets offering buy-one-get-onefree (BOGOF) deals on unhealthy food *Warnings on drink bottles to flag up how many spoonfuls of sugar they contain *A 20% tax on full-sug-
ar drinks with the money raised going towards preventing childhood obesity *An outright ban on supermarkets placing sweets and other less-healthy foods at the ends of aisles and checkouts
not hosted the Games since Munich 1972 had chosen Hamburg as their preferred candidate city, ahead of Berlin. Almost two-thirds of voters in nearby Kiel, where sailing events would have been held, backed the Olympic proposal in the referendum. But turn-out in the relatively small
city was under 32%, while 651,000 voters in Hamburg took part - totalling 50% of the electorate. Disappointed Hamburg Mayor Olaf Scholz said: “That’s a decision we didn’t want, but it’s clear.” Critics of the Hamburg plan said it was wasteful, at a cost of 11.2bn euros (£7.9bn). The city authorities had promised 1.2bn euros for the event, but the lion’s share would have been contributed by the national government. Florian Kasiske, from the No campaign No-
lympia, said people could see that money could be better spent. He saw a change of mood in Hamburg, suggesting the vote was linked to the large numbers of migrants and refugees arriving in the city. “It’s really about city politics,” he said. “Many people are just arriving in this city and have to sleep in tents - and there has to be money for that.” The result was a setback for German sport, and Michael Vesper, head of the German Olympic Sports Confederation
*Restricting the use of cartoon characters and celebrities in children’s advertising *New guidelines on what constitutes a healthy, school packlunch Dr Wollaston said the Government’s current approach was naïve, and that a much tougher approach to tackling the “huge health inequality gap” was needed. She added: “We feel the problem is so great that it’s time for action, and just taking gentle measures that tinker at the edges won’t have the effect we need. “If the problem is great enough, we need to do something that makes a difference. A quarter of children
Hamburg folk reject its bid for Olympics
HAMBURG residents have voted against hosting the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, even though the city was one of just five left in the running, alongside Rome, Paris, Budapest and Los Angeles. But in Sunday’s referendum, 51.6% of the people voted No, arguing that money earmarked for the Games could be better spent. Two years ago, voters there also turned down the chance to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. Olympics officials in Germany - which has
(DOSB), said: “Now, it’ll be impossible to hold the Olympics in Germany for decades.” He believed that the recent Paris attacks, as well as the migrant crisis, had played a part in the No vote. And he said the continuing corruption scandal involving FIFA, and the doping row in world athletics had also been key factors. An International Olympic Committee (IOC) spokesman said: “A great opportunity for the city, the country and sport in Germany is lost.”
from the most disadvantaged families are leaving school not just overweight but obese. And that’s wholly unacceptable.” The new report follows a row between the Health Committee, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Public Health England (PHE) about recommendations in a PHE report suggesting a sugar tax be introduced. But Prime Minister David Cameron is known to be against the idea. Mark Littlewood, Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs, believes the proposal is “pretty daft”. He told Sky News: “Where these sort of taxes have been tried elsewhere in the world, they’ve been diabolical failures in changing consumption.” He feels families would simply switch to value brands rather than cut down on their consumption. “There’s plenty of information for consumers,” he added. “I think, sometimes, that those from or around the medical profession get irritated that free people don’t behave as they wish. “But legislation, heavy regulation and taxes is not the way to combat that.” New figures last week showed one-third of 10 and 11-year-olds in England are overweight or obese, although obesity among younger children is falling. Treating obesity and its consequences currently costs the NHS £5.1bn every year.

Restaurant racket being toned down
Cruel dog-owner faces jail after taping dog’s muzzle AN American woman, who posted a picture of her chocolate labrador with its muzzle taped shut, has has her comeuppance.
Not only has she sparked outrage on Facebook, but she has also been charged with cruelty to animals. Katharine Lemansky, from Cary, North Carolina, posted the photo on her Facebook page on Friday, alongside a caption reading: “This is what happens when you don’t shut up!!!” The original post was later taken down, but not before being shared hundreds of thousands of times on the socialmedia site. It generated angry comments from people concerned about the welfare of the dog, which is called Brown. Cary Police tracked Lemansky down on Monday after a search covering three states. They charged her with one count of misdemeanour cruelty to animals after she admitted the incident had taken place in the city. Captain Randall
Rhyne said in a statement: “Taping the dog’s muzzle shut was a terrible decision on Ms Lemansky’s part, and charging her with animal cruelty under North Carolina law was the right thing to do. “At the same time, it’s important to also note that our animal-control officers who physically examined both Brown and her littermate found the dogs to be very well cared for, which is why we did not, and could not, remove them from the owner.” He added that there were no signs of injury to Brown’s muzzle. Lemansky, who lists her name as Katie Brown on her Facebook page, posted a number of comments after putting the photograph on the website. She wrote: “Don’t panic everyone it was only for a minute but hasn’t barked since ... POINT MADE!!!” On Saturday, she added: “I don’t know what a****** did thr b******* of posting my truck on line... When I figure it out you are done!!!!” Lemansky, who will appear in court on 14 December, faces up to 150 days in jail.
IT must have happened to many of you at some time: you arrange to go out for a meal in a popular restaurant with friends who have flown over for a visit, and you’re excited.
But as the room fills up and the din increases, you can hardly hear a word being spoken, and you’re thankful to get out in one piece. Okay, it doesn’t necessarily spoil the friendship, but it almost certainly ends your patronage of the eaterie. Yet it is not difficult for restaurateurs to prevent the racket. The progressive volume increase caused by the reverberation of sound inside an enclosed space is called The Café Effect. “Spain is the secondloudest country in the world, after Japan, says Svante Borjesson, Director-General of the Oír es clave Foundation, which works with people who have hearing problems. “Noise and acoustic pollution have an effect on our everyday life and, negatively, impacts everyone - and not just those with hearing problems.”
Now, to raise awareness about an issue which is commonplace, the foundation has developed a project called Comer sin ruido (Eating without noise), aimed at restaurant and bar-owners who want to create friendlier environments for their patrons. “But The Café Effect does not just happen at bars and restaurants,” says Borjesson. “I am even more concerned about schools and hospitals, where excessive noise prevents students from concentrating, and patients from getting the rest they need. “And that’s without even talking about the
workplace, where noise has a great impact on productivity. But we decided to start with bars and restaurants because it’s an attractive area in which it’s easier to make an impact.” The Comer sin ruido website features a list of 20 restaurants, which have adopted the necessary measures to reduce noise levels, including sufficient space between tables, installing proper sound-proofing in lounge and bar areas, avoiding clatter in the kitchen and playing music at a reasonable volume. The idea is for owners
Missing mum’s wanted boyfriend is violent thug IT has been revealed that the boyfriend of missing mum Lisa Brown, subject of a police hunt, was imprisoned last year following a fight in a Gibraltar nightclub. Simon Corner, a 33-year-old Liverpudlian, is wanted in connection with the disappearance of Spanishbased Scot Ms Brown, a month ago. It has emerged that Corner has a violent history, having spent three months behind bars for possession of a knife in Gibraltar’s Dusk nightclub in 2014. He was also convict-
ed of common assault, death threats and disorderly conduct in a police station, but no further action was taken. Corner had been staying on the Rosa of London yacht, in La Linea’s Alcaidesa Marina, in Andalucia. But he vanished more than a fortnight ago, while it was being repaired in Sotogrande. Ms Brown was a regular visitor to the yacht, often going there to to sunbathe after work. Corner is understood to have left Spain, possibly to Portugal, Ibiza or even Thailand, which are among the possibilities being explored.
The mother’s disappearance - she has an eight-year-old son, Marco - is still being treated as a missing-person’s inquiry. She was last seen at her Spanish home in Guadiaro, Cadiz, on 6th November, and was reported missing three days later after failing to collect her child from school. A police search of the surrounding area, backed up with helicopters, sniffer dogs and a diver operation in nearby Rio Guadiaro, has failed to uncover any clues. Royal Gibraltar Police,
who have been working with the Guardia Civil in the search, confirmed they were looking for her boyfriend, a “British man who had been docked at Alcaidesa Marina and was working in Gibraltar”. A source at the Marina office described Corner as a “wheeler-dealer”, who had docked a number of boats there over the last year. Corner, said to look “older than his age” and last seen in July, made his money buying and selling boats. Previously, he’d had a Spanish girlfriend from La Linea.
“He was often in and out of the port, and you have to be suspicious about exactly what he was up to,” added the source, who would not confirm that he had left without paying his bills. A retired Briton, who has a boat in the marina, said he often saw Ms Brown visiting. “She would sunbathe on his boat. She had a lovely, soft, Scottish accent and was an affable girl,” he added. “I stopped seeing her after he disappeared in the middle of the night without paying his berth fees, or some of his workers.”
to become aware of the problem themselves, and self-regulate. “We would like to see travel guides, such as Michelin and Repsol, take this factor into account,” says Borjesson. “Auditory comfort should also be an important part of a restaurant review and get a mention. We’re working on it.” But despite the prevailing belief that the loud volume inside many Spanish bars and restaurants is simply a national idiosyncrasy, Borjesson believes that much of it has to do with poor building materials - or the wrong ones being used altogether. Cement and marble, for instance, are not porous and do not absorb sounds well, while wood does. But, unfortunately, wood is not widely employed in Spain. “It’s hard to raise awareness about the danger of noise pollution, but we’ve made a lot of progress,” says Borjesson. “People are making efforts, and you see more and more establishments with sound baffles - to reduce reverberation - on the ceiling, for instance. “You don’t need a decibel meter to figure out whether a place has done its homework or not. If you have to raise your voice to make yourself heard … it hasn’t!”

Don't Miss... Monday 7th December, ITV1, 21.00 “I’ve been to this city several times before, but I never discovered where fantasy town collided with reality, and I never looked too closely at the people who live here and what Vegas does to them.” Sir Trevor McDonald Las Vegas with Trevor McDonald uncovers the secret life of Sin City, the ultimate sunny place for shady people, a city that grew from nothing by offering the forbidden. This two-part series focuses not on the tourists who flock to the bright lights of Vegas, but on those who call the gambling mecca home: those who live in the shadows, those who have won big and lost big, and those who might fare better living somewhere far, far away from the pull of the neon lights. “I’ve been to this city several times before,” says Trevor, “But I never discovered where fantasy town collided with reality, and I never looked too closely at the people who live here and what Vegas does to them.” Across the series, Trevor meets several of Vegas’ most intriguing characters, including former World Heavyweight Champion, Mike Tyson, Antonio Esfandiari, winner of the largest cash prize in poker history ($18.3million), and 1950’s showgirl Lisa Medford, who bears first-hand witness to the good, the bad and the ugly of the Nevadan city. One resident Trevor meets in this first episode is Annie Lobert, a former high-class prostitute, who at the height of her career was making $2million a year. Annie now runs a secret location safe house for prostitutes trying to make a break away from their violent pimps. Las Vegas is the prostitution capital of America, despite it being illegal, and on its appeal Annie says: “The money, the clothes, the cars, the jewellery, the nice houses, the trips, the parties, the famous people. Come on, I mean who doesn’t want that? Who doesn’t want to feel important?” However, Annie discovered a far from glamorous side to prostitution. Trevor also meets veteran bail bondsman Jon Foster, a man who knows pretty much everything about the wild side of Vegas life and often fears for his own safety: “Nevada’s an open carry state, which means you can carry a pistol walking right down Las Vegas boulevard, on your hip, fully loaded, fully legal.” Things get tense when Jon and his men track down a client who’s skipped bail. Jon also reveals that he himself has succumbed to the bright city lights and has lost a million dollars through gambling: “When you hit the big jackpot, and you win $10,000…that euphoria, that rush that you feel, it’s short-lived, but it’s fun. It’s exciting. It’s the most excitement I get in my life.” Another Vegas resident who knows all about losing money, in his case millions of dollars, is former World Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson. Trevor visits Mike at his mansion, hidden away in a wealthy gated community up in the Vegas hills. The former boxer talks about how he is trying to build a life as a father and a husband after a turbulent past that saw him bankrupt after once being worth $300 million. On shunning the glitz and glamour of the Vegas lifestyle, despite living there, Mike says: “It’s just not my desire to be in that particular world anymore…I don’t believe there’s anything else I could do on the Strip that would be new.” Tyson’s story epitomises what can happen to people in Vegas: They win big and they lose it all.

The Great Polar Bear Feast Channel 4, 19:00 This programme reveals the astonishing story of an annual phenomenon that occurs in early September in northern Alaska. Every year, up to 80 polar bears gather on the frozen shores of Barter Island, near the village of Kaktovik, to feast on hunter-harvested bowhead whale remains. This extraordinary gathering is highly unusual not least because polar bears are known as solitary predators, rarely if ever moving in a group. With more and more polar bears turning up each year, scientists are determined to find out how the bears know to come to this remote island at exactly this time of year.

Ellie Harrison and Joe Crowley explore the NC500 - a new 500-mile scenic loop that takes in some of Scotland’s remotest and most beautiful places. Ellie is in the west near Applecross where she comes face to face with the fearsome Belach na Ba - the ‘Pass of the Cattle’. At more than 2,000 feet, it’s Britain’s highest road. Ellie then snakes up the coast to Ullapool to find out how one small native fish could be the answer to the salmon-farming industry’s prayers. Joe Crowley is in the east, riding the NC500 through Sutherland’s fertile planes. He stops off to meet the young couple who have jacked it all in to live the crofting life. He then drives on to the Black Isle - so called because of its rich black fertile soils. Here, he meets the farmers growing premium barley destined for the whiskey industry. Tom investigates the high number of traffic accidents that happen on our rural roads, while Adam discovers that the future of UK energy production may be straw powered.

The Hunt BBC1, 21:00
Nature documentary series narrated by Sir David Attenborough, taking an intimate and detailed look at the strategies employed by hunters to catch their prey, and the hunted to escape. The coast is the dynamic border between land and sea. Powered by the tides and thrashed by waves, this is a world of continuous change. Opportunities never last long here, so hunters are always in a race against time. The coast is the only place on the planet where predators from air, land and sea come together. Dolphins that leave the safety of the sea to fish, walking octopuses, ingenious monkeys, fishing wolves and the greatest gathering of feeding humpback whales come to the coast to hunt. For all, timing is everything.

Sister Rita To The Rescue
4th December - 10th December 2015
M o n day
BBC1, 09.15
To some, she’s known as The formidable Sister Rita. To others: Attila The Nun. Tough, uncompromising, and determined to get the best results for whoever comes through her door, Sister Rita Lee is a unique troubleshooter, running a drop-in centre in Collyhurst, one of the poorest parts of Manchester. The centre includes a food bank, welfare rights services and employment support. Stripped across a week, this observational series follows Rita and her team as they battle to resolve the sort of issues replicated in countless other communities across the country, offering advice and support to those experiencing difficulties with debt or benefits, who don’t have beds or furniture, or who simply don’t know where else to turn for help. Celebrating 50 years as a nun, Rita’s no-nonsense approach and unorthodox methods have given her the reputation of being able to take on any problem - but she doesn’t suffer fools and has no patience with bureaucracy and red tape. Broadcast in the run-up to Christmas, each day Sister Rita and her team attempt to turn around the lives of different people in the neighbourhood, and their solutions will prove invaluable to others in similar situations elsewhere. Through the cases Rita tackles, we’ll expose the reality of life for those at the bottom of the heap in modern Britain. We’ll see Rita find herself at the centre of a major news story, as her determination to help the people in her area leads to the Lalley Centre being picked to pilot a government scheme that makes front page headlines. This time, has the redoubtable nun bitten off more than she can chew? And as the series concludes we’ll see the team making plans for one of its busiest times of the year. How can they bring some Christmas cheer to families who fear they can’t afford to celebrate this year?

Kate Quilton and Dave Fishwick sniff out a bargain this time in two distinctly smelly worlds: perfume and gas. Kate flies to Florence, Italy, to meet a professional perfume ‘nose’, whose job is to conjure up new designer scents. The show discovers the ingredients that go into expensive designer perfumes that make them so pricey and ask if they are really that different to the much cheaper scents in high street chains? Dave heads off to the Nyhamna gas plant in Norway, to investigate the cost of natural gas; and questions if the big gas companies are giving us a fair deal on the stuff we use to heat our homes.

Having been lucky enough to perform for Prince Charles and Prince William in previous years I look forward to the opportunity of sailing a little too close to the wind in the presence of Prince Harry this time round. It’s my third time on the show and I still am yet to perform in front of the Queen, she must be really desperate not to see my act.” The show promises to be an unforgettable evening of the best UK and international musical performers, extraordinary theatre, and brilliant comedy as well as a number of sensational surprises.

Imagine… Carlos Acosta: Cuba Calls BBC1, 22.35
Imagine follows Cuban ballet superstar Carlos Acosta in London and Havana, as he masterminds a sultry new production of Carmen for The Royal Ballet before stepping back from the classical repertoire and embarking on a series of ambitious new projects in Cuba. Alan Yentob explores Acosta’s plans to create his own, unique dance company and foundation in his homeland, as well as his dream of transforming a spectacular yet derelict architectural treasure in the outskirts of Havana into a world-renowned beacon for dance, finishing a project first begun by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara more than 50 years ago. Imagine offers a fascinating insight into a remarkable artist in transition at a critical time for both him and Cuba.

Prey ITV1, 21.00
Critically acclaimed actress Rosie Cavaliero (The Enfield Haunting, Inside No.9) is joined by Philip Glenister (Life on Mars, Mad Dogs), MyAnna Buring (Banished, Ripper Street), Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Utopia, Misfits), Ralph Ineson (Game Of Thrones, The Office) and Sammy Winward (Emmerdale) for the second series of ITV’s gripping drama Prey. Written by Prey creator Chris Lunt, the new three-part story will see Rosie reprise her role as DS Susan Reinhardt the no-nonsense, hardworking cop now reporting to DCI Mike Ward (Ralph Ineson). Philip Glenister takes the role of Prison Officer David Murdoch whose life becomes complicated when on a routine visit to a Manchester hospital with female prisoner Jules Hope (MyAnna Buring) events spiral out of control. David takes a phone call that will change his life forever. With the life of his heavily pregnant daughter, Lucy (Sammy Winward), threatened, David has no alternative but to go on the run and inadvertently becomes the prey. Unaware of the danger to Lucy, DS Susan Reinhardt, whose personal happiness seems forever blighted, tries to unravel why David is suddenly behaving totally out of character. With his reputation as a prison officer intact, Reinhardt tries to understand why he is now making every effort to dodge the police. Reinhardt and her new colleague, DC Richard Iddon (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), set off on a thrilling pursuit as a desperate David handcuffs himself to Jules. She is his only bargaining tool as he sets out to move ‘heaven and earth’ to find his beloved daughter. David Murdoch is a middle-aged prison officer; widowed, living alone, he has one grownup daughter, Lucy, who is pregnant. She is his world. When Jules Hope, an inmate at Ravenhill Prison, is taken ill, it’s Murdoch who escorts her to hospital. But while Jules is waiting for treatment, Murdoch gets a phone call with an ultimatum that turns his life upside down. If Murdoch wants to see his daughter again, he must break Jules out of hospital and deliver her to the man holding Lucy captive. If he talks to the police, Lucy will die. Murdoch knows he has no choice but to comply. But when the plan goes awry he is forced to take matters into his own hands. Pursued by DS Susan Reinhardt, Murdoch finds himself in a race against time to evade the law and save his daughter’s life.

Britain’s Oldest Crooks
4th December - 10th December 2015
T hursday
ITV1, 21.00
“I’m not ashamed of myself, I’m ashamed of some of the things I did. Yeah, I regret that my lifestyle hurt so many people. I’m not looking forward to standing in front of the pearly gates. Not just yet.” - Michael, 65, former career criminal This new documentary tells the stories of pensioners who refuse to grow old gracefully - by committing a slew of crimes including fraud, shoplifting and even growing cannabis. Made by Wild Pictures, the producers of the acclaimed ITV series HMP Aylesbury, Strangeways and The Zoo, this programme provides an insight into how older criminals face up to the consequences of their offences - including lengthy prison sentences. Some of those featured are career criminals, some are first-time offenders - to all of whom the prospect of a custodial term has proven no barrier to committing crime. Britain’s Oldest Crooks explores the reasons behind their offending - from the prospect of poverty in old age to Government cuts in essential services, and even insurmountable debt - and asks whether prison is the right place for those in the twilight of their lives to serve their sentences. Dick, aged 81, calculates he’s spent about four years in prison over the years for breaching an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) placed on him for harassing his neighbours. Complaints against him include chasing neighbours’ sheep and waving his stick in a threatening manner. Dick is defiant, but says the prospect of returning to jail on new charges worries him. He says: “My greatest fear is going back into prison, away from my wife. That’s what I care about. The oath I took when I married her to look after her till the end of our days.” Wife Joy admits she is sick of him going to prison. She says: “Now we’ve come to the age we are, we should be enjoying life with no worries. But now we’ve got this one big worry over us all the time. It’s very difficult when he goes away and they put him in prison. This last time was ridiculous - I could hardly get about.” ‘Audrey’, 72, who declines to reveal her real name, stole £109,000 from the firm where she worked as a finance manager by siphoning off company money into her own account because she had run up debts on her credit card. She didn’t even tell her husband she was doing it and ended up being sentenced to nine months in prison for embezzlement. She says: “Every time I did it, I felt bad, I felt [like] I shouldn’t really be doing this. This is not me, this is definitely not me. But you’re scared. Then it snowballed and that’s when things really got out of control.” Eric, also 72, turned to cultivating cannabis to make oil in a bid to alleviate the effects of his rheumatoid arthritis. But the law disagreed with his approach, and after a police raid on his house, he was jailed for six months for cultivating cannabis. He says: “It just makes me feel relaxed, pain free and I can function. You know I’m not some stoner or somebody that uses it for social benefit, I use it as medicine.” John, 66, went to prison for six weeks for breaching an ASBO he received for persistently feeding pigeons in his home town of Morecambe. People in prison, John explains, were surprised to discover what he had been jailed for. He says: “Everyone was kindness itself, the wardens, the prisoners - a lot of them were murderers, drug dealers - were staggered, they couldn’t believe that anyone had been sent to prison for that. I took no notice, carried on doing it because I knew perfectly well it wasn’t illegal to feed birds.”

Ode to a karaoke host By Jamie Droo THE dictionary definition of karaoke is: “An interactive form of entertainment where amateur singers sing along to a recorded backing track, using a microphone and public address system.” Sounds simple! But karaoke can be a far cry from simple because, for the seasoned host, it can be a battleground. Love it or loathe it, karaoke has, for a long time, become as much a part of the entertainment establishment as beer is to a pub. Tenerife’s bars offering live entertainment in the form of singers, bands and tribute artistes, will undoubtedly have a karaoke set-up, too. It is rare in any bar that the entire audience comprises people who like to use this facility. In fact, I would estimate that no more than 1520% of people in a karaoke bar actually sing and take part in this pleasant pastime. For the host, this can sometimes be a far cry from pleasant. A few months ago I wrote about “karaoke rage” as much a phenomenon as karaoke itself. And after talking with other comperes on the Island, I have learned that karaoke rage is real, and exists everywhere! There is no getting away from the fact that it is entertaining to watch somebody who is not a professional perform a song well. But, along with other comperes, I find it hilarious that a certain type of mannerism has developed among a few of the karaoke faithful. The list is endless, but here’s a comedic look at a few things that seem to happen nightly in every karaoke bar. 1. This is probably the question asked most by a karaoke singer: “Where are the words?”
The compere’s response should definitely be tailored around sarcasm. It’s almost like tourettes in the way this question comes out. A stage will always be positioned to face an audience, so the obvious place to install a TV screen with words on will, undoubtedly, be right in front of the stage. The look on a karaoke singers face is priceless when the host responds with, “we write the words down on a piece of paper and pass them to you, a line at a time.” 2. The next most popular question is one that really shouldn’t need to be asked, but I guarantee that everyone who has hosted a karaoke night is hit with this pearl: “What am I singing?” This question is presented by people who have, without doubt, come in to the bar, taken the time to fill in a karaoke request slip (before they have even bought a drink) and possibly waited for 15 minutes before being called up to sing. In that period they have, seemingly, totally forgotten the song they have put in. Which is strange, because they
would more than likely have sung that same song already in the previous bar they were in during their evening’s karaoke tour. I wonder what they would do if the compere’s response when posed with this question was: “You’re sing-
ing, Smack My Bitch Up by Prodigy.” 3. All comperes want the best for their singers. After all, if you give someone a good experience, he/she will keep coming back, which is the ultimate goal for revenue for the bar. However, some make it nigh on impossible for us to enable them to enjoy it. I have no idea why some people choose to hold a microphone with their hand completely covering the head. It is totally counter-productive and creates a tinny sound - and a ton of feedback (unpleasant whistling from the speakers). Basically it sounds horrible. There isn’t a sound engineer in the world that can correct this while the microphone is being held
this way. It’s like trying to pour tea into a mug which has cling film covering it. There is only one mug in this case, and that’s the one holding the microphone like Reggie and Bollie. The only one way to defeat this is to use a microphone like the one pictured. These are just a few little things which, I am certain, most karaoke hosts experience on a regular basis, and it really is just a tongue-incheek look at the trials and tribulations of the karaoke compere. Some have it a lot worse. Craig Hevern, resident compere at the Highland Paddy, was recently attacked on stage by a group of thugs, who were simply asked to stop coming up on to the stage and disrupting the enter-
tainment. I know Craig well, and he would have been acting in a most professional manner without creating any bad feeling. But his nose was broken in three places, and he has some damage to his eye socket. Police arrested the yobs the next day and they are now subject to the Spanish legal system. This was a terrible thing to happen to a well-loved entertainer, and totally unprovoked. However, Craig is on the mend after an operation on Tuesday at Candelaria hospital to reset his nose … and rumour has it that it has made him better looking. Everyone who knows Craig will be wishing him a speedy recovery, including all the Canarian Weekly staff. So, karaoke a pleasant pastime? For the majority of the time it is and always will be. But it has a dark side. It is a small form of entertainment in the grand scheme of things, and karaoke singers are always a minority in an audience. So just because a bar has the facility to offer karaoke, it doesn’t always mean is a Godgiven right to be able to get up and sing. The host may choose to act as a DJ and play party tunes to get the rest of the audience - the majority) up dancing. This is when karaoke rage manifests itself the most, and the die-hard karaoke singer will become agitated. You may even see them rocking themselves slowly backwards and forwards while they try to get through the lull in karaoke, while the rest of the audience are entertained in an alternative way.

So many festivities to enjoy
By Vanessa Vee CHRISTMAS has arrived with a big bang this year, and it seems that everyone is on top of it all and organised - even me!
So this week, I am taking a look at what is happening around and about during the run-up to festivities, especially here in the South. Arona has again organised Christmas craft workshops and themed activities for children from 5pm until 7pm on various early evenings throughout December across the municipalities. For exact dates and locations, see www. arona.org. Coupled with this, Los Cristianos Auditorio Infanta Leonor is presenting Tchaikovsky´s famous Nutcracker, performed by the Moscow Ballet on Wednesday (9th Dec). Tickets, from
38 euros, are available online or in person at the theatre. Adeje is bringing us its traditional weekend Christmas market, beginning today (Friday), next to Adeje Music School, in Las Torres car park, from 5pm till 9pm, and from 10am until 9pm over the weekend. The main Christmas market will be held the following weekend at Calle Grande in the town centre, from 5pm until around 1am, on a much larger scale, offering the usual Christmas products, activities, bouncy castles, as well as story-telling, craft workshops, music and theatre.
The customary fun fair is already set up and ready to go near the Valdes centre in Los Cristianos, and this year, from 17th December until mid-January, Adeje Cultural Centre will also be hosting a fair. Thursday evening (17th Dec), at 8pm brings you the “Christmas Unity Concert” on Plaza Espana - a festive night of music and dance. The following evening, venture to Plaza de la Hoya to see the Living Nativity Scene from 8.30pm, and again on the Saturday evening. And Magma Arte and Congress centre, in Las Americas, will offer yet
another musical extravaganza for your entertainment from 18th December. And at the same venue, from the same date, and for the first time in the South, we will have access to ice-skating. For a full programme of what’s on in Adeje, please see www.english timeadeje.com In the ex-pat community, last weekend saw the start of the Christmas gift fairs, and this weekend there’s more of the same, namely at Yates’ on Starco and San Miguel Lions Club in Costa del Silencio this Sunday. Yates’ is also receiving visits from Santa, who
has a temporary Grotto down there, along with the cast from Disney’s Frozen. And the Music Hall Tavern is bringing a good old-fashioned Pantomime to town this year, which has to be worth a visit!Aladdin is also coming to town, along with music and laughter. Tickets are selling fast, so get yours now. As always, the highlyprofessional team at Showtime, The Sound of The Musicals, have revamped their show for a Christmas theme and this is one I will not be missing out on because it is sure to be full of Christmas cheer.
It includes ELF the Musical which, I just know, will be outstanding, and it even incorporates a matinee performance. Some catamaran companies offer an alternative Christmas lunch, so forget the norm and opt for a Christmas Day sailing! Or, for an even more bizarre option - as it may sound to some why not pack up the car and nip up Mount Teide on Christmas Day for a BBQ lunch with a difference? Insomnia at Sea VIP boat parties are running a one-off Christmas special on Sunday, 20th December. Group and residents’ discounts are given, and it’s ideal for works’ Christmas parties. If you want to stick to tradition, you can still do this to a certain extent, and if you want to go off the wall, the choice is yours! Trust Ms Truss to get us all eating healthier food BRITONS appear to be adopting a healthier outlook when it comes to food, switching tinned spaghetti hoops for fresh pasta and ditching lard for olive oil. In fact, their appetite for white bread and potatoes has dwindled in the last four decades, according to official surveys revealing the nation’s change of eating habits. Environment Secretary Liz Truss says the country has moved on from the days when “taste and quality were ignored” as she urges shoppers to buy British. And those canned hoops have been spurned as fresh pasta soars from under 30gm in the Nineties to more than double today. Actually, pasta con-
sumption has trebled from 31g to 90g since 1974, while rice has leapt from 17g to 95g per week. Potatoes, that good old staple, are definitely off the menu, dropping dramatically by 50% from 1.4kg in the mid-Seventies. Some 500,000 British families are asked each year about their eating habits as part of the Family Food Survey. It goes back to 1940, revealing the social transformation from post-war austerity to the present. And Government ministers claim, rather loftily, that it demonstrates just how the UK is emerging as one of the most exciting food cultures in the world. The survey also reveals some clues about social change: the early efforts
were aimed at “housewives”. But it did not include alcohol or sweets because they could hardly know how much their husbands drank, or how many sweets they scoffed in the office. As part of a commitment to transparency, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs are set to release a detailed breakdown of every Food Survey since 1974, showing how “spaghetti hoops have fallen out of favour, fresh fruit has toppled tinned, and our appetite for butter has revived”. The data shows how tea consumption has fallen drastically from almost 70g per day in the Seventies to barely 25g today. Coffee consumption, by contrast, has remained steady.
Butter is now more popular than margarine, which had been more popular in the Fifties and Eighties, but it has gone right out of favour in the last 20 years. White bread has also plummeted, from more than 850g every week to around 250g, which is, perhaps, a reflection of families trying to cut back on carbs. And bananas have overtaken apples as the nation’s favourite fruit, while oranges are right out of favour Ms Truss, Cabinet Minister, asked whether she would genuinely eat food in that bracket, said: “I just see if it smells okay and eat it. Absolutely!” The mother-of-two added: “I’m of the school that if the cheese has got mould on it, just cut the
end off and eat the rest of it.” And her actions are within NHS guidelines, which decree that people can ignore “bestbefore” labels but not “use-by” dates, which could be prone to food poisoning. She also said she wanted to see fewer supermarket “buy-one-getone-free” offers to cut down on food waste. Curiously, olive oil has grown sharply in popularity, up from an average of 4ml per person per week in 1974 to 16ml in 2013. Soft drinks also reveal a sharp change in tastes, with low-calorie options almost overtaking nondiet options. Pizza, which hardly registered in 1974, now accounts for around 80g
of an average person’s weekly diet - another sign of British families enjoying international cuisine. Ms Truss said: “The UK has emerged from a dark age in food in which, too often, taste and quality were ignored. “We are now transforming ourselves and taking our place as one of the most exciting food cultures in the world - a unique blend of tradition, innovation and openness.” Television chefs like Raymond Blanc and Ken Hom this week joined entrepreneurs like Leon’s Henry Dimbleby and food blogger Ella Woodward to launch a fiveyear Great British Food campaign to help Britain become a Great Food Nation.

A SHINING EXAMPLE!
By Carl Pattison
THERE’S nothing healthierlooking than hair that shines brilliantly … hair that reflects the light and gives off a radiance.
But how is this effect achieved, and how can you help your own hair to acquire this sheen? Healthy hair begins from within: how you eat and how healthy you are in general. So for starters, you’re not going to see reflective hair if all is not okay on the inside. Eating well and making sure your vitamin intake is accurate and regular will definitely help. So if you’re okay inside, what do you do
4th December - 10th December 2015
to encourage it on the outside? As I always state, your shampoo and conditioner are the No.1 ingredients, followed by the most important part. Keeping heat to a minimum is the key, so toning down your hairdryer and using the cool button to seal down the cuticles will work wonders. Keep hair irons to a minimum, and always use a heat spray to protect. Serums and hair oils also benefit your
hair if you are looking for optimum shine. Just make sure they are nongreasy because this will weigh the hair down. Shine sprays give an instant effect if used at a distance from the hair. A light spray gives a mirror-like gloss to hair and helps brushing through the hair. And if you’re hanging on to longer lengths of dry hair, these should be removed to leave behind only healthy hair, and keeping up to the cut can only help the situation. The old wives’ tale of brushing your hair really does work because it distributes the hairs’ natural oils; thus adding extra natural shine. If your hair doesn’t have a natural gloss, there’s always a solution to bring it back. Check with your favourite stylists and get their tips on how your hair can really SHINE.
PUTTING ON THE GLITZ PUT away your dull and forget your simple numbers … this festive season brings out all the right reasons to put a bit of sparkle into your going-out dresses. From top to toe, you must add a little bling to your outfit. Whether you go for partial or the whole look, including stones, sequins or metallic tones to your party-wear will make you stand out in a crowd but for all the right reasons! Silver is big this year in most high-street stores, and online as well. But
golds and bronzes look just as stunning if you choose the right tone. Even if you select a more simple dress or outfit, still add sparkle in another way; for instance, your handbag, a scarf, jewellery or simply your shoes, which can all add glamour. Just don’t overdo it. If you are adding a jacket to your outfit, maybe this can be your focus piece, and layering this
over a simple dress will combine well. Just remember that at some point in the evening, you might take it off. So, just in case, add a diamanté belt to keep the theme going. There are no rules about how, or how much, you bling-up your Christmas wardrobe. Just make sure you have fun doing it, and you will “shine” this season.
Robot is nine!
ROBOT Hair Salon, situated in Los Cristianos, this week celebrated its ninth year in business on the Island, so we visited owner Carl to catch up on what’s going on there at this special time of the year.
“I’m so happy that we are giving the people of Tenerife what they want in terms of caring for their hair,” he said. “Thanks to our clients, we go from strength to strength, and it’s a pleasure to see them return, time after time.” That’s why Carl really pushed the boat out when it came to decorating his salon for the festive period this year.

“I always go mad at Christmas and try to show my creative side,” he said. “But this year, it was a labour of love.” It took Carl months of planning, starting in August, to source his materials and pull together his ideas. “In October, I started making the Christmas Angel - an idea I used used before in my UK salon. But this time she’s turned out better than I expected. Tourists and clients alike stop, look and take photos of the eight-foot angel outside the Robot salon, and Carl said: “She certainly brings a smile to all who see her.” She took over two weeks to complete and, together with the 14 hours he spent on the interior decorations, Carl has surely created a stunning display to rival any department store. “Don’t ask why I do it, but it just gets big-
ger every year,” he said. “People expect to feel Christmassy when they pass by, or have their hair done in the salon.” Carl, who used a team of three to create his decorations, added: “I just have an idea in my head, and I know exactly how it’s going to look. It’s just conveying it to those who are kind enough to help me.” So now his problem is the 2016 display, but, as he said: “I already have the next creation in my head.” You will find Robot Hair Salon just up from Los Cristianos harbour, and Carl and his team are there six days a week, with late nights up to Christmas. And, with a festive message for all his clients, he said: “Thank you for all your positive compliments, which is why I put this much effort in. Merry Christmas from all at ROBOT!”

Mum’s the word… By Nico Gil
of Activate Sports Club
THIS article goes out to all those stressed Super-Mums. You are not alone because getting the balance right between work and family is a job in itself.
You’re sitting in a meeting and suddenly remember that you need to decorate a paper plate for Halloween by tomorrow, or that you forgot to wash your son’s football kit. You’re waiting at the doctor’s surgery, balancing a sick, feverish baby in one arm and trying to answer work emails on your phone with the other hand. You cut the bedtime story short to finish a presentation, then feel horribly guilty when you see your little angel sleeping peacefully. The list goes on, and on… Being pulled in two, three or four directions is demanding, difficult and so stressful. Here are seven useful lifestyle tips to help all busy working mothers out there: 1. Don’t compare By this I mean don’t compare yourself or your children with
other mothers and their seemingly-perfect offspring. Trying to live up to insanely high standards is the fastest way to stress yourself out. Feeling “not good enough” is something most mothers experience at some point or another. In fact, many feel it permanently, and the worst thing you can do is compare your own private family life with the public image given by another family. Who knows the level of crazy shouting, tantrums and biscuiteating that goes on behind their closed doors? Focus instead on being the best mother you can be, taking into account who you really are, with all your strengths and weaknesses. 2. Find childcare, or
a school you’re happy with If you spend most of your day worried that your lovely little child isn’t being looked after properly, isn’t eating well, or isn’t happy at school, the chances of you producing any decent work are pretty small, which will probably create a rather large problem with your boss (or employees). 3. Delegate, and delegate some more Take off your SuperMum cape. It can become far too heavy to bear and makes life far more difficult than it need be. Trust your partner (even if you don’t think he’ll do it as well as you). Enlist some help from your family and create a good support network of friends, neighbours and other mums you can call
on if necessary, and get your children to help, too. Give them small, age-appropriate jobs that make them feel like important members of the family - because they are! 4. Get organised Any parent knows that mornings are madness. Yet despite this, most of you still leave everything to the last minute. Get your bag and your children’s nursery/ school stuff ready the night before, iron whatever clothes need to be ironed and get uniforms ready before you go to sleep. 5. Give yourself some credit - and some free time You are doing the best you can, and that is good enough! No one knows how to manage the work-family life, and despite what you may think, having a messy
home and letting your kids eat junk every now and again just means you are normal. Don’t get so caught up in everyone else that you forget to love yourself. Exercise classes, a manicure, an hour with a coffee and a book or your favourite TV programme are not “treats” you have to earn. They are an important part of taking care of yourself. 6. Aim to separate work/family time as much as possible When you’re at home, be Mum; play with Lego, bake cakes, listen to your kids and be present. This is hard to do when your phone is beeping every 10 minutes with new emails and messages. Children grow up very fast, and, between school and activities, they really don’t spend much of their day with
you. So at least when you’re with them, be with them. Likewise, try not to take your children to work with you, and by this I mean try to limit the amount of “Proud Mama” talk you tire your colleagues with (they may seem happy to hear it, but they’re probably not). 7. Chill out Remember that before you were a partner/wife and a mum, you were a friend, a sister, a daughter, a colleague, and so on. You are still all of those things, so make time for each of them. Put regular coffee/ dinner dates with your girlfriends in your diary and stick to them. Laughter is the best way to cope with a stressful life. And wherever possible, relax and have fun with your family.

Cats welfare news
Poinsettias won’t poison pets
POINSETTIAS are known as Christmas plants, and they decorate the verges and roundabouts here, as well as being popular house plants. The plants, red or white, are believed to poisonous for cats and kittens, though, and they are, to an extent because their milkywhite sap contains poisonous chemicals. But while poinsettias are commonly hyped as poisonous plants, they rarely are - and the poison is vastly exaggerated. Far more worrying are the festive bouquets containing lilies, holly or mistletoe. Even bouquets brought into the house by guests should be inspected thoroughly because lilies are the No.1 bouquet flower used by florists. Just one or two bites from a lily can result in cats suffering acute kidney failure – and even the pollen is thought to be poisonous! Other Yuletide plants such as holly berries, mistletoe, and rosemary can also be toxic to cats and dogs. If holly is ingested by your pets, it can result in severe gastro-intestinal upset because the spiny leaves contain potentially-toxic substances. Most cats and dogs lip-smack, drool, and shake their heads excessively because of the physical injury from the spiny leaves. As for mistletoe, most of us hang it high enough to be out of reach of our pets. But it can also be toxic if ingested. If swallowed in large amounts, collapse, hypertension, ataxia (walking drunk), seizures and death can occur. So keep your pets safe this holiday season, and consider carefully the plants and flowers you have in your home. Fund-raising fun-day Our Christmas Charity fund-raising event takes place next Saturday (12th Dec) from 2-6pm at the Heads ‘n’ Tails Bar, Avda. Santiago Puig, Las Americas.
We have a superb lineup of acts throughout the afternoon, along with a raffle and tombola. There’s even a visit from Father Christmas, so bring along the children. It’s a guaranteed fun afternoon, which will help us raise muchneeded funds. Give Sophie a home Our featured cat this week is Sophie a beautiful, young, female tabby who was a street stray and became pregnant. She was taken in by a concerned member of the public and had her babies, who are now grown-up and have homes. But we now need a forever home for Sophie because it would be heartbreaking to return her to the streets. She is spayed and inoculated and will come with a microchip. There are pictures of Sophie and all our other cats and kittens awaiting adoption on our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife.com/pets The website is updated daily, so it always has the latest cats and kittens available. If you have questions or would like to meet any of the pets we have available, complete the contact form on the website, or ring Theresa on 680 475 500 between 10am-6pm any day. Short-term adoption If you cannot commit to long-term adoption but would still like to help us, there is also lots of information about fostering on our web page, which should answer all your questions. It doesn’t matter if you live here full-time, for a few months or just a few weeks because shortterm foster carers are
always needed. Please contact us to find out more. Charity shop goodies Money at this time of year can be tight, but if you are looking for something special to wear for Xmas or some jewellery or shoes to accessorise an existing outfit, look no further than our charity shop on San Blas, in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). We have a large dress and jewellery section ,as well as shoes and scarves. There is also plenty of smart items for men - and all good quality and condition, at a fraction of shop prices. The shop opens seven days a week, from 10am until 6pm apart from Saturdays, when opening hours are 11am to 4pm.

Live Arico news
Joey’s here, so stop hunting JOEY is a five-monthold, pure Podenco. They are, primarily, used for hunting because of their speed and long noses to seek out rabbits. Yet they are of good character and a joy to own. What else do you need to know about the breed? Well, they have endless energy and will not suit life in a small apartment, unless there are long walks on the cards. A finca, where they can run would suit better but, most importantly, a loving home with fresh air and time for exercise would be ideal. For more information of Joey, and all our dogs, call Sue on 629 388 102. Adopt don’t buy, always the best option. Fashion Show delight We are so excited because our Fashion Show takes place tomorrow (Saturday), and the standard of our dresses
and gowns really is astounding. In collaboration with hair-stylist Beth Rainford, from New Generation @ Bryan Richards, we aim to bring Paris and Milan to Tenerife, but somewhat more friendly on your purses. Come to the Waterfall, Golf del Sur, at 4.30pm tomorrow, watch the show then buy the dresses, either off the rail or at auction. See you there, ladies. Xmas doggie bash Live Arico welcome Derrick Lynes to our fund-raising team. His first bash is next Saturday (12th Dec), at Harveys Bar, Mirador Strip, Los Cristianos, from 2pm. Come and see some fab entertainment from Spencer Robson, Elaine Alexander, Helena Campbell, Scott Bateman, Tenerife Commitments, the Showaddy-
Waddy show and many many more. Come on down, and get in the mood for Xmas! Christmas Raffle Our festive raffle last year was so popular that we are repeating it, again featuring excellent prizes. Win a FitBit lifestyle band, a head camera or a drone, for just two euros a ticket. The Boxing Day draw is on the San Blas Top Square, Golf del Sur, and tickets are now on sale in our shops. Charity Shops Check out our Golf del Sur branch because it really is something special! And our vet, Cesar Bertoldi, is with us every Wednesday from 10am until noon, offering advice on all aspects of your pet’s healthcare. Find us at Golf Park, on the loop road before the lottery kiosk. We’re open from 10am until 7pm every day (Sundays: 10.30am-3.30pm).
Lions’ birthday bash IT’S many happy returns for San Miguel Lions Club, which celebrates its birthday with a Charter Night bash next Saturday (12th Dec), at the Chicken Shack Restaurant in Costa del Silencio. It includes a full Christmas Dinner, with a choice of starter, soup or prawn cocktail, followed by the full trimmings - even mince pies
and crackers! It starts at 7pm, with a canopyand-cocktail welcome and, says Club Secretary Ralph Solomon: “You are all very welcome to come along and celebrate the night with us.” Entertainment comes from Oasis Fm’s Gordon Slayney and Spanish TV star Xeseko. Tickets, just 20 euros, are available from the
Lions’ Charity Shop, in The Dip, or contact Ralph on 685 542 128. This Sunday (5th Dec), San Miguel Lions members are holding their annual Christmas Fayre outside the Charity Shop, from 11am. Stalls are available and there will also be live entertainment, plus a Raffle, Tombola, etc. Call Ralph for more details if you want a stall.

Palms nearly prune Treehouse AFTER the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup first round, we returned to Direct Telecom Pool League action this week. In Division One, Treehouse A had a chance to move back into top spot and apply some pressure as Gaffers A were playing a day later. They had an away game against Palms A to negotiate and, a few weeks ago, beat them 111. However there would be no repeat this time. In fact the Palms boys were smart away. 3-0 soon became 4-1 and then 5-2 as the hosts more than matched their high-flying rivals. All the frames were close and, slowly, the luck turned and Treehouse took the next three games. Palms captain made it 6-5, only for Treehouse skipper Mark to win his frame as well. Just! He sunk the black, but then watched the white ball pinball off the bottom corner pocket. How it stayed up, only she upstairs knows! With Gaffers A aware of this result, they knew that a victory against Palms B on Wednesday would allow a gap to open. But they were a little surprised to see an old face lining up for the visitors. Jumbo was back to add a little spice to the contest. But he lost two vital frames, which demonstrated the standard of pool in the Direct Telecom top flight. The early session finished all-square. But in
the second phase, the home side showed exactly why they are defending champions by taking all four frames. Palms B took the next two, only for the hosts to regroup and take the 8-4 win, and a four-point lead at the top. Dreamers A have kept themselves in the mix after winning the Los Cristianos derby against Bluebell A, who made the 10-metre trip around the corner. But they will wish they hadn’t after the home side made their usual fast start. The games were close and the banter sharp, but the home team soon came out on top. Down in Los Abrigos, it was the “Steak Derby” between The Phoenix and The Phoenix Potters. The pensioners made the better start, with Potters taking a 3-1 lead, which soon became 5-1. The “home” side fought back, but the lead was too much to overcome. Down on the Golf, Terrace Bantams had a home tie against Exiles A, who and it was Stash who took first blood for the visitors, but the Bantams struck back and were soon 3-1 up. The second session followed the same pattern and it was soon 6-2. And with a point assured, the home team quickly wrapped up the win. Stash was outstanding for Exiles, taking all three games. Terrace Roosters took a trip to Rewind A, who

have found their form. Lee, Danny and then John ensured their early 3-1 lead, but the Roosters fought back. Going into the final session they were trailing 5-3 and before the visitors knew what had happened, they had lost all four frames and it was game over, Danny being the Rewind star with three wins. There was a top-table clash in Division Two between Treehouse B and Crown B, with the leaders looking to extend their advantage. This was a big test for the Treehouse title credentials, but they never

really got going. Before the table-toppers could find their form, the match was lost and Crown B’s eye-catching win will give them all the confidence in the world - two points off top spot. Picasso’s A, who are enjoying a good season, were away at Hoppy’s A. Fran is doing a fine job captaining them and, again, she got the best out of her team. Picasso’s did enough for another win, which moves them up to fourth spot. Splash Bar slipped down after their home game against Rewind

Rewired, who have taken over from Crown A. They are by no means a new team and are packed full of talented pool players, leaving Craig and the Splash shell-shocked as they found themselves 8-0 down. A whitewash was on the cards but, fortunately, Craig and Chris took games to make the scoreline slightly more respectable. Sabores, fresh from taking their first point of the season, were at home to Hoppys B and had set themselves a target of winning their first league match. But nobody told the opposition, who were soon in the groove, taking early frames. Sabores had no reply and the game was soon over ... so

it’s back to the drawing board! On Wednesday night Hoppys A were in action again, hosting Tenerife Pool Tables. With an extra night’s practice under their belts, the home team were full of confidence, striking first with Kevin beating Fat Nick. But TPT soon turned it around through Adi, Harley and Colin. The same three players struck again in session two to put TPT 6-2 up. The team quickly secured the next two as well, and it was game over. There was just enough time for Harley to take the last game, giving him three wins on the night. And just to remind Simon and Terry, he is still only 10 years old!
Another award for the amazing Ayoze AYOZE Pérez has gone from strength to strength since leaving CD Tenerife to join Premier League Newcastle. The young striker’s form has been one of the few high points in an awful 18 months for the Magpies. Pérez has won a handful of awards over the last year, and this week he was at it again, scooping the North East
Young Player of the Year crown at the prestigious North East Football Writers Awards ceremony. During the evening he bumped into a couple of Tenerife “faces”. Greg James, who coowns the Hole In The Wall in Parque de la Paz, was in attendance. He is at the event every year, along with Tenerife Entertainment Award winner Fergal Flaherty.
Ayoze was only too happy to chat with the guys, and Fergal told us: “He is one of the nicest, most-grounded young lads I have met. “We chatted for a good while as he knows my son, Sean, who plays for CD Tenerife’s Cadete team. “He follows Sean on Instagram and Twitter and, while chatting to him on Sunday, he did a
personal video message wishing him the best in his football. “I have met many young footballers over the years at these awards and through our fellow co-owner Chris Kamara, but none is as humble as Ayoze.” Fergal added: “He left a great impression on me, and he deserves all the success and good press he gets.”

Hoppys skipped and jumped! WAY back in July, Gaffers were a mid-table, Division 1 outfit, in eighth place and 25 points adrift of the top three. But look where they are now! A run of excellent results has seen them drop just four points in their last five matches, culminating in last Friday’s visit to third-placed Hoppys Bar, where the seven points they claimed enabled them to leapfrog their opponents into that third place. But Hoppys weren’t completely legless because Pete fired in his third maximum to match Matt’s fourth for Gaffers. Boothen Army’s Sam tops the 180 charts this term, his eighth maximum coming during his side’s whitewash of Emerald Lounge. It keeps them three points above Phoenix Bar, who also notched eight at Pas O Nadas A. The match included an enthralling 3-2 singles win for Mitch, despite Andy’s 111
checkout, and a stunning 146 finish from Bubbles. Also on the maximum trail was Gary, who hit his second and third 180 for Emerald Shamrocks in their 6-2 defeat of Bar 180 B, while Exiles held the trebles leg to beat Palms Sports Bar (even Emma knew where they were playing this week!). Palms Pool Bar put in an excellent performance in restricting the Playboys to just two points, while Waterfall Warriors had the result of the week with a 5-3 win over Boothen Titans. Reports of Titans having to “hang their heads in shame” have yet to be confirmed! Despite the hefty lead held by Phoenix Flights at the top, there is a chance of a late twist in the tail in the Division 2 title run-in. Flights won the eighth rubber for a 5-3 win against Summerlands, whom they face again tonight (Friday). They also have

Omar does it again CD Tenerife 1 Girona 1
By Roscoe TENERIFE made it four matches undefeated under Jose Marti, but this was their worst display for the new boss.
The hosts had more of the ball but often found the wrong pass, or simply ran out of ideas. The side have had a few changes over the last couple of weeks and maybe that played a part. It was pleasing to see
young Tomas Martinez given a rare start, and I’ve a feeling the lad will be a real star after Christmas. He has spoken recently about how much more settled he is here. For all the Tenerife possession, it was the visitors who had the more direct threat. They opened the scoring just before the break through an unlikely source. Ruben Sobrino was well thought of as a kid at Real Madrid. He was a star for the C team and did okay for Castilla. But a couple of niggly injuries prevented him from kicking on, and he
jumped at the chance of joining Ponferradina last season. He played mainly as an attacking midfielder and managed a respectable five goals from 41 matches. A decent return after a few years of injury. He was snapped up by Girona in the sum-
mer and swiftly got injured. But, back fit and playing in his preferred striker role, he scored his first goal in Santa Cruz. Keep an eye on him. The lead lasted just two minutes before our own eye-catcher, Omar, netted the equaliser. He really is finding his feet
now, but he is also attracting the scouts, who are looking for the next Ayoze Perez. Girona were down to 10 men early in the second half after a careless second yellow card for Javi. This should have sparked Tenerife into life, but they couldn’t find the key to the door. In fact, Girona looked more likely to net the winner late on as they attacked on the counter. Tenerife were hanging on a bit at the end and, in some ways, this was a point gained. The teams are both on 18 points - five points
from the play-offs and five from the bottom in this crazy, tight division. This weekend, Tenerife go to Alicante to take on Elche, who have struggled to adapt to life in the second tier. And a few of the players have been getting stick for being a bit too BigTime Charlie. They have the talent, and I like the way Sergio Leon leads their line. He has improved, hand over fist, in the last few seasons and reminds me of Nino, who is a legend at Elche and Tenerife. Leon is also quick off the mark and loves a first-time shot.

Premier League Preview ANOTHER Premier League weekend and another set of interesting results. The question is, though, are the rest of the teams catching up, or are the big teams really under-performing? Either way, it makes for an interesting season.
By Adi Benson Stoke v Manchester City Stoke will not be happy with last weekend’s performance and must have fancied beating Sunderland. They need to pick their heads back up, but this will be a difficult task, even though they are at home. A big performance is needed from Mark Hughes’ team. City bounced back to the top of the league, with their rivals all picking up draws. They put in a good performance against a tough Southampton side and showed real character to come back after the heavy defeat the week before. They now need to step up a gear to show their title credentials. Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-4 Southampton v Aston Villa The Saints faced Man City with confidence, initially, but defensive mistakes cost them early goals. And even when they got back into the game, they couldn’t shut out the home team. This will be an easier game, but they can’t be too complacent. If they fall into that trap, they could find themselves losing. But things do not look good for Villa. Just five points from 14 games sees them rock-bottom,
and no team have ever survived from this position. It would be a good time to rewrite the record books, but they look beaten already, with too many players under-performing. Prediction: Home win Last season: 6-1 Man Utd v West Ham Utd Man Utd showed good character to come from a goal behind to get a point against Leicester, but they will be disappointed not to have taken all three because, at times, they were much the better team. They look a more compact group, now that individual mistakes have been cut out, and they look like going the distance. West Ham had a great run at the start of the season, but in recent weeks they have started going backwards. They need to get back to winning ways, but face a real task at Old Trafford. They have been one of United’s bogey teams in the past, and must hope that works in their favour. Prediction: Home win Last season: 2-1 Arsenal v Sunderland Arsenal looked a little shocked after managing a draw only against Norwich. But, more importantly, they picked up further injuries to key players. The squad now looks paper-thin and investment is needed in
January. But will Wenger open the cheque book? Somebody told me the squad looks tired, but I think it’s the manager who does! Sunderland had a muchneeded victory at Stoke, which lifted them out of the relegation places and gave them a massive confidence boost. They need to keep it going, or they could easily find themselves slipping back down. It’s a tough ask at the Emirates, though. Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-0 Swansea v Leicester Swansea, short on confidence and struggling for points, need a performance that will give them a lift. And what better time to do it than at home against one of the league´s highfliers? Manager Garry Monk, under increasing pressure, needs his players to help him get them out of this slump. Leicester showed they can do it against their top-table rivals after a good draw against Man Utd. Jamie Vardy was key, as he has been all season. And his consecutive goals’ record will, maybe, lift a little pressure off him. Sooner or later, though, he will get through a match without a goal and, if the Swans can keep him quiet, they have a chance. Prediction: Draw Last season: 2-0
Watford v Norwich Of all the promoted teams, Watford have performed best and have probably done enough already to stay up. Deeney and Ighalo are scoring regularly, and, with a decent defence, this has seen them put a good run together. They know their opponents well - they came up with them - and will expect another victory. Norwich, close to the relegation zone, are constantly looking over their shoulders. But an unlikely point against Arsenal gave them a nice shot of confidence. They’ll be looking forward to this clash, aware that if they are to survive, they must take points off teams in a similar situation. Prediction: Draw Last season: N/A West Bromwich v Tottenham The Baggies have had a steady season and have certainly done enough already to ease worries of a relegation fight. I suspect a top-half finish would please the board and fans, and they are going in the right direction. They just need to start scoring more. Spurs, who didn´t look as good as they have recently when facing Chelsea, and must be disappointed with a point, when it was a good opportunity to win. They will try to
bounce back, but West Brom defend well and will strive to keep Harry Kane quiet. Do that and they have a chance. Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-3 Chelsea v Bournemouth Chelsea have some nice fixtures coming up, starting with this one which will help them get their season back on track. However, they are 10 points off the top five and I don´t think they will make that up. Of course, they say they can, but their goal now must surely be Europa League qualification. Bournemouth have slipped into the bottom three and it will take a monumental effort from them to climb back out. They will have one eye on Sunderland, Norwich and Swansea, knowing they are competing with them for survival. but they have nothing to lose at Stamford Bridge and might as well go for it. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A Newcastle United v Liverpool Steve McClaren has been trying to say the right things this week, but you can’t see him running the Magpies for much longer. Apart from the odd result, they have looked poor this season. And they appear to have no Plan A, never mind a Plan B. The players don’t look motivated and it is
costing them. Liverpool proved against Swansea that they can win ugly, and they may need a repeat here. Coutinho was missing through injury, and it demonstrated just how much they rely on his creativity. Sturridge was back from injury, but can he win a starting place? Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-0 Everton v Crystal Palace Everton have been receiving good plaudits recently because they have been playing well. But all that came undone against Bournemouth because they couldn’t hang on to what appeared to be a last-gasp win after leading 2-0. I’m sure Roberto Martinez has been working with his defenders this week to ensure that doesn’t happen again. Ross Barkley had another good game and makes them tick. Palace fell behind to an early Newcastle goal but, if anything, it woke them up and they showed what an aggressive, counterattacking team they are. They use the pace of their wingers and they tear defences apart. Even more impressive is that there are goals throughout their forward line and midfield. Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-3
Debra’s dazzling Boys! YET another interesting weekend in the Premier League, but the Oasis FM Fantasy League managers have more injury worries to contend with after a few players picked up knocks.
December is a busy month, and there’s plenty of football over the festive season, so it’s time to start looking at transfers - and for players who have, perhaps, not experienced
as many games as others. In terms of performance, Sunderland’s win over Stoke provided good point-scoring because they provided three players for the point-scoring team of the week: the goalkeep-
er and two defenders. Crystal Palace had two after their demolition of Newcastle, and Watford contributed both strikers via their win at Villa. The rest came from Liverpool, Bournemouth, Everton and Man City, with Kevin De Bruyne the player of the week on 16 points. There was no change at the top of the league, Trevor Passingham’s Passo Utd still occupying top spot. They managed to outscore Frank Devany’s Baines On Toast team and, as a result, Trevor has extended his lead to 17 points.
Team of the week was shared, and one of our female managers put in a good performance with 81 points. So welldone Debbie’s Boys, managed by Debra Lamon. She had a good showing across her team, with Ozil and Barkley as her star performers, and a good front-three of Vardy, Ighalo and Lukaku. She shared the limelight with Cherry FC, managed by Lee Cherry, who also had Ozil and Barkley to thank, as well as Crystal Palace’s Bolasie.
We have now played one-third of the season, and nobody is running away with the league. But a high point-scoring week can soon
change things around. And don’t forget, you can also use the extra boosts introduced this year to grab even more rewards.
