Spain decides on Sunday... Continued from front The PM was elected with a strong majority in 2011 and, while he is favourite to win again, there is every chance that he will need to form a coalition, which he is not keen on. Four years ago, his hard-line stance on the economy swept him to power. Rajoy has been true to his promise of turning around the country’s financial troubles, but he remains a leader more popular overseas than at home. Unemployment is down, the standard of living is up, the business sector is Europe’s fasting-growing, and there are green shoots of recovery in the housing market. However, his Popular Party - but not Rajoy himself - is still tainted by a never-ending corruption scandal. The Prime Minister has also seen a wave of support for new political parties, and there is no doubt that the days of a twoparty system are gone forever. New boys Podemos and Ciudadanos have emerged and, though they threaten a PP majority, they have, in some way, actually helped Rajoy. They have taken supporters from the socialist PSOE party, which has had a sticky year. Led by 43-year-old Pedro Sanchez, the party has made gains in lo-

cal elections, but that trend has not crept into the national polls. Sanchez, elected party leader in 2014, was seen as a youthful, more vibrant option to the now 60-year-old PM. But while he correctly points to social reforms such as the abortion bill, rights for the disabled and their stance on same-sex marriage, the PSOE - like the UK’s Labour party - is left carrying the can for the Economic Crisis which happened on their watch. Sanchez, it seems, has been unable to come up with an economic recovery plan which makes sense or adds up!

It’s a similar problem for the other two parties. Podemos, under swashbuckling leader Pablo Iglesias, was like a breath of fresh air as its members blasted on to the scene two years ago. The public, who quickly took to the new ideas, were dazzled by the pony-tailed leader. However, the honeymoon period is over and the devil of the detail has seen support melt away. Iglesias, the leftist political-science professor, has been hit hard by the economic recovery, and his well-documented love of the Greek government’s method of financial control. As that

crashed and burned, so did the Podemos support. That said, the 37-yearold struck a nerve as the anti-corruption voice and, over the last six months, the manifesto has become more mainstream. Joker in the pack is Albert Rivera’s Ciudadanos party. Rivera is just 36, but he is a well-seasoned politician with a nose for a populist sound-bite. Under his leadership, Ciudadanos has surged from a regional party into the mainstream. Rivera stands for the “clean- sweep -from-anew-broom” style of politicians, who believe

it’s time for fresh ideas and thought. His party also stands for Catalans who do not want independence. This brings plenty of enemies, but he is handling things rather coolly. He could be the gatekeeper to power. In the event of Rajoy not getting an absolute majority, it is most likely that the PP would seek a deal with Ciudadanos. However, their politicians would ask for electoral reform - think of the Lib Dem demands on David Cameron in 2010 - and also some changes to the way regional government is structured. This is the first election to truly embrace the modern, digital world. Twitter, Facebook and other social-media sites have been alive with the Election. There was even a leaders’ TV debate. Sort of! Rajoy, showing all of his 60 years, thought it pointless. He preferred to be judged on his record, rather than sound-bites. As it turned out, it didn’t do him any harm. And he also benefited from the unsavoury scenes of Wednesday night, when he was punched by a 17-yearold lad in Pontevedra, Galicia, which is

Rajoy’s home region. It was a full hook, which hit the top left of Rajoy’s head, breaking his glasses but leaving the Prime Minister unmoved. He continued his campaigning and, the following morning, was even photographed in the gym before a rally in Barcelona. “He’s a tough 60-year-old” said one observer. Polling stations open at 9am on Sunday and close at 8pm. Those voting will elect 350 congress members and 208 senators. In 2011, PP polled 44.6% of the vote and gained 186 seats in Congress. PSOE got 28.9% and 110 seats. Polls this week suggest that PP will get around 27% with PSOE 21%, Podemos 19% and Ciudadanos, 18% and climbing. Security will be tight after the recent Paris attacks and, of course, it’s the first election under King Felipe. It will be a fascinating weekend, and even Nostradamus would struggle to predict where we will sit politically on Monday morning. Rajoy is banking on the financial recovery giving him four more years. He may be right!

Police murder probe after car-blaze death POLICE have opened a murder inquiry after discovering the charred remains of a man in the boot of a flaming car.

On Tuesday night, several members of the public called the emergency services after seeing a burning car career

Patients sue after suspect drug renders them blind TWO Tenerife patients affected by an ophthalmic product used in surgical operations, which caused them to go blind, are suing the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) for a total of over 600,000 million euros. One of the patients is claiming 313.844 euros and the other, 288,046 euros. One operation was carried out in June 2014, and the other in the November. Although the responsibility appears to lie with

the manufacturer of the product - perfluorooctane, marketed as Ala Octa - lawsuits filed by noted Tenerifian lawyer Juan Jose Rodriguez consider the administration must respond in the first instance since they were in charge of the drug used. There are at least eight Canarian patients affected with the socalled Ala Octa case, and they were all operated on in Tenerife’s Canary Islands University Hospital (Candelaria

Hospital), in the North. In total, some 50 people in Spain have been affected by the batch of rogue Ala Octa. The Health Department has detected 47 cases spread across 14 hospitals in seven regions, while more cases in countries like France, Belgium and Germany have also been reported. The Tenerife patients affected have suffered greatly, and one of them needs continued assistance on a daily basis.

down a deep ravine. It is understood the car was on all four wheels as it left the road and hurtled down the ravine. It was also in a standard position when it came to a stop. The incident, at La Centinela in Valle San Lorenzo, San Miguel, occurred around 10.30pm. Local and national police were swiftly on the scene, along with Guardia Civ-

il officers and two fire engines. It took some time - and 1,500 litres of water - to extinguish the blaze. One unnamed source said it was “a very strong and intense fire”, and it is believed that an accelerant or fuel sparked the blaze. Fire-fighters had to climb down a steep slope with ropes and hoses to reach the car, which was about 50

metres below the TF28 road. Detectives are working on a theory that the victim had been kidnapped before being murdered. As we go to print, few details about the dead man have been released. However, we do know that was said to be over 60, born in Granadilla and a Santa Cruz resident, with business interests all over the Island.

Insular ring finally opens Cabildo clamps down on cowboys’ rubble trouble! THE Cabildo is clamping down on builders who unload their rubbish - bricks, rubble, timber, etc. - at the roadside, and anywhere else they believe they can get away with it.

Officials have labelled as “very urgent” the need for prompt action against the “cowboy” dumpers throughout the Island.

Territorial Policy Minister Miguel Angel Perez claims they must “start to inspect the activity because we cannot keep looking the other way”. Although the department chief says the problem is not yet at crisis point, he adds: “There are many situations where the sector now has nowhere to throw the rubble because Tenerife has few authorised places. And those that are available are very small.” Angel Perez says the

Canary Islands Government should be stronger. “There are more penalties than people think for this kind of offence,” he adds. “But what happens is that they go so slowly it seems that nothing is being done.” He insists that Tenerife has no adequate places to deposit building waste, but says a large part of is recycled. His answer is to conduct a joint work plan with the Canarian Government to solve the problem.

IT has been years in the planning, suffering more setbacks than a Liverpool title challenge. But, finally, the Insular Ring Road in the South-West is open to traffic today (Friday).

Early this morning, the ribbon was cut on a project which has been grossly over-budget and, even by Tenerife standards, ridiculously late. The new two-way highway is nearly seven kilometres long and will link with the roundabout in Armeñime to the viaduct in Erques, catering for more than 10,000 vehicles daily. However, the opening does not mean the work is complete. It’s not the end of the road because, still missing are the last

bits of conditioning of the banks, gardening and a bit of spit and polish. This will be conducted over the next few days, and José Luis Delgado, head of the Canary Government Road Infrastructures, said: “Apart from these last little bits of conditionings, we are ready. “We have always prioritised the opening to traffic as a matter of general interest, not least because it will save many citizens more than 20 minutes each way - and the point is to benefit the people.” There is still one more section of road to be finished in this project, which will be completed by December 2016. This is the work on the downhill stretch to the coast, from the road link to the future Erques Fonsalía port, in the Guia de Isora municipality.

The opening of this stretch of road, in essence, completes the TF-1 motorway. The last stretches of the “fast track”, which starts from Erques Bridge and ends in Santiago del Teide, with two lanes towards the North-West and one towards Adeje, opened in April. Altogether, there will be 21 continuous kilometres of insular ring in the South-West. The final instalment of the TF-1 project, the more complicated and costly section, will complete the work. This is the Erjos tunnel, which will link, finally, the North and South. At the moment, the Vera Erques link sees traffic diverted alongside the main highway. Only last week, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport approved another 12 million euros of funding toward this project.

Adeje push for its educational needs ANA Dorta, Regional DirectorGeneral for education centres and infrastructures, visited a number of schools in the borough recently to discuss class sizes and three proposed new centres.

She was accompanied by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Education Councillor Adolfo Alonso, Regional Co-ordinator Jonathan Fumero and departmental heads. The visitors learned first-hand the needs and plans of the borough for a number of essential projects under way, and, in some cases,

those awaiting final approval from the Canarian Government. During visits to a number of the borough’s primary and secondary schools, the issue of class sizes was raised, as was the need to agree on an acceptable ratio of teachers to pupils. The Mayor said the growth in class sizes was not new in Adeje, and centres needed to be remodelled to meet the increasing demand. As well as other factors, the growth was, he said: “The result of migratory flows and the attractiveness of the borough as a residential area for new families given, among other things, the high employment rate.” Security, accessibility and youth activities were other factors dis-

cussed by the visitors with Adeje Council representatives. Adolfo Alonso also included a visit to the plots of land already handed to the Canarian Government for the construction of a new primary school in Tijoco - the current school is far too small for the number of pupils in the catchment area - and the proposed teachertraining college behind Gran Sur. Adeje’s Education Councillor added to the agenda an urgent need to accelerate the approval and construction of a third secondary school in the borough, in Las Torres. This latter project is in the hands of the Canarian Government, awaiting a final decision, and Alonso stressed: “It’s essential that these

three projects, for which we have asked for many years, are now dealt with urgently by the regional government. “The Council has given the land to the Canarian Government and we have said we are happy to co-operate in whatever we can to progress these building projects. “These are not whims of Adeje Council - they

are plans to meet the real and current needs of our residents.” He added: “In some cases, we need to replace buildings that are obsolete and which simply don’t meet the pupils’ needs. “In other cases. we are dealing with infrastructures that are fundamental, not just for Adeje but for the whole of the South of Tenerife.

“We are talking about offering training opportunities to our young population with which they can meet the challenges of the labour market head-on, prepared and able to compete at all levels. “We are talking about equality of opportunities, innovation and employment, about our young people and their future.”

Make the most of your life in Spain SOME of the secrets to happy living on mainland Spain and in the Canaries are revealed in a new British Embassy survey on how expats adjust to life in the sun.

Integration into the Spanish way of life is the key, it says. And more than 50% of Brits who responded to the survey say they speak Spanish regularly with friends and neighbours, enjoy Spanish food, use the Spanish healthcare system and employ Spanish tradespeople. The adjective “happy” is the word they use mostly to describe their lives in Spain, followed by “relaxed” and “content”. But some Brits admit to getting by without learning Spanish or registering on the padrón, failing to make Spanish friends or keeping up with Spanish news and politics. Yet these are all things that appear to help others get more out of living in Spain. Nearly 1,600 people responded to the British Embassy’s “Integrometer” online survey into levels of resident integration. Two-thirds live in Andalucia or the Comunidad de Valencia, where there are some high concentrations of British residents, and integration is often low. Further significant numbers live in the Canaries, Murcia, the Balearics, Catalunya and the Madrid region. British Ambassador Simon Manley said: “It’s great to see so many Brits saying they are happy and content in

Spain as a result of their efforts to integrate into local life. “I would definitely urge others to follow their example. If you are settling here, the first and most important thing to do is to register on the padrón. That way, you can access the health and social services you may need now or in future. “If you fail to register, you can’t expect support from the Spanish system later. Some of the most tragic cases we see in our Consulates are the consequences of people having moved to Spain - often years earlier - but not signing up on the padrón, or integrating into their local Spanish communities.” Nine out of 10 people say they are registered on the padrón, which implies that one in 10 survey respondents have yet to do so. More than half say they have a Spanish will, and over 50% have a Spanish driving licence. Two-thirds are registered for Spanish healthcare, with another 13% having private medical insurance. But an alarming 16% admit they have failed to provide for their healthcare in Spain, leaving them at serious risk of difficulties in the event of an accident or illness. Spanish food proves popular. Nearly 25% say they eat a Spanish meal every day, 80% do so at least once a week, and just 6% say they eat a Spanish meal less than once a month. The wealth of advice on the British Embassy’s own “Living in Spain” Facebook page helps nearly 40% integrate into Spanish life. It also provides useful links to both Spanish and British Government procedures and public information.

But the 82-year-old Spanish soprano, who is in poor health, will not actually set foot in prison because the term is under two years and she has no criminal record. Caballé was not in court to hear the sentence, participating instead via video confer-

EACH Canarian will spend 264 euros on gifts during Christmas, which is 13 euros more than in 2014, and 29 euros more than the national average.

So says a study by Global Consumer Trends in Christmas, prepared by eBay , which analyses the buying habits of Christmas gifts by consumers in Spain. The Canaries, along with Madrid (also 264 euros) are the regions which will go over-budget this festive season, while those in Galicia (211 euros) and Castil-

la-La Mancha (209 euros) will spend less. As the number of consumers buy gifts at Christmas, the average Canarian will give away 10 gifts to six people. And the archipelago, along with Castilla and Leon, are the regions heading the list where more gifts will be delivered. In contrast, consumers of Asturia, Basque and Navarre are the least Xmas gift-givers, with an average of seven presents. But who are we spending our cash on? Partners lead the way, with Canarians forking out 163 euros on their loved ones. Family members come second, followed by parents, with 105 and 95 euros respectively.

SOME 60 people have been arrested in Spain, the US, and Latin America over alleged links to a ring circulating images of child sex abuse.

The Mexican government said almost 100 raids had been carried out in 12 countries. Three girls aged between nine and 15 were rescued in Mexico, wrote a government commission in a statement. Computers seized were said to have been used to post indecent videos on the internet. The Mexican National Security Commission said searches were car-

ried out in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Spain, the United States, Uruguay and Venezuela. The raids, known collectively as “Operation Without Borders” were aimed at “breaking various structures dedicated to the distribution of pornographic material of children via the internet”, the commission added. A fourth girl was rescued as part of the operation, but the commission did not specify in which country. The action comes two months after Spanish police arrested more than 80 people in raids targeting images of child sex-abuse.

Caballé is not the only celebrity to have come under scrutiny from Spanish tax officials in recent times. Barcelona football star Leo Messi, tennis champion Rafa Nadal and singers Ana Torroja, of pop band Mecano, Alejandro Sanz, Lola Flores and Isabel Pantoja, have all been in the same boat.

Jurassic PIT keeps growing

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

IT’S never easy being the boss. The buck stops with you, regardless of the shortcomings of the staff beneath you. You get to bask in the glory of a job well done, but normally, it’s about sorting out problems. And that usually means staff and their efforts. Or lack of them, if you happen to a be a football manager. As we go to print, the world is going mad over Jose Mourinho’s departure from Chelsea. Again! How often in this column have I said that history is the best predictor of the future? It seems like Guus Hiddink is the man to replace Jose. Again! Last season, Chelsea won the league comfortably, and you felt that, with the right investment, they would have a real go at European glory this time around. But Chelsea bought poorly, ignoring Mourinho’s suggestions. I get the feeling he knew what was coming. He’s been like a bear with a sore head all season. Sir Alex Ferguson knew the right time to jump ship and, looking back now, so did Jose. In August, rather than at the end of a title-win-

ning season, he inked a new four-year deal which was seen as stability. Today it seems like the starting pistol for the end game. Almost immediately there were problems. I’ve always thought of Jose as the Clever One. I bet he is a whiz on the chessboard. Grizzled old football hacks are notoriously hard to please. I couldn’t name you one who didn’t have the highest respect for Jose. Regular listeners to my radio show will tell you that I subscribe to the theory that you should always ignore public opinion on football matters. That’s because 99.999% haven’t a clue how a football club, or the sport, is run. A populist view is often a wrong view. Smart operators think outside the box and swim against the tide. Real Madrid fans wanted Jose out and ended up with Rafa. Ditto Man United with Moyes and Van Gaal. But there are exceptions. Chelsea fans would have kept Jose, and I believe the board will regret sacking him. Again!

THE 16th annual Children and Youth Park’s Tenerife PIT opens its doors today (Friday), transporting the smaller ones into a Jurassic world.

The event, which runs until 5th January at the fairgrounds in Santa Cruz, has 38 attractions, of which

24 are completely new. The entrance fee is eight euros, as in previous years, but those over 65 and children under two go free. Workshops, rides and educational activities are just some of the pastimes which can be enjoyed, and the fairground doors will be open for 10 hours daily. The Cabildo hopes to attract more than the 55,000 people visit-

ing the PIT last year. To achieve this, the fair will cover a total of 18,000sq/m, packed with attractions inspired by the Jurassic world. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, said: “It will be the best amusement park in the holiday season.” Jonay Lopez, the PIT chief, says that among the highlights are the ice attractions, which last year were a big success - and this year have

been improved. The event generates 250 direct jobs and Alonso added: “We will ensure the quality of visitors’ experience and safety when they use any of the attractions. “We seek a balance between recreational, physical and educational fun to create a quality and high-value-added activities. “Besides fun, this will educate and promote values for the young.”

Spain’s Ambassador to India quits on the spot SPANISH officials have confirmed that Gustavo de Aristegui, the country’s Ambassador to India, has “voluntarily resigned” following news that he had, allegedly, received corporate kickbacks.

They were said to have come from Spanish companies working in developing countries, and he is believed to have sent money all the way up to senior Spanish politicians. A probe has so far revealed that most of the companies involved in the alleged “scam” are building solar energy and infrastructure projects in at least 30 countries. Spanish sources say a current investigation is about whether some contracts had Indian links, and whether Mr Aristegui took commissions from Spanish companies for

contracts in India. Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mr Aristegui’s resignation was immediately accepted by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Government. A spokesperson for the Ministry said: “Spain’s ambassador to India has resigned citing private reasons. He sent in his resignation on Sunday, 13th December. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain has decided not to comment on the reasons behind the resignation as Ambassador Aristegui has cited the reasons as

private and personal.” The resignation comes as a huge setback for Rajoy and his Popular Party (PP), who are seeking re-election in Sunday’s poll. What hurts Rajoy particularly is that Aristegui’s partner in this episode is Pedro Gomez de la Serne, a prominent PP member of Parliament. Spanish Foreign Ministry sources said Aristegui cited his allegiance to Prime Minister Rajoy while resigning from the post. Prominent Spanish newspapers El Pais and

El Mundo have been reporting about the “commission scam” involving Aristegui for some time. A former corporate employee-turned-whistle-blower exposed the alleged scam, hinting that Aristegui used his diplomatic reach in Madrid to earn commissions from Spanish companies for construction work in Algeria and several other countries. Aristegui and Serna are accused of floating a company, and of having earned millions from Spanish corporate houses.

The Spanish Police, acting on intelligence from the National Crime Agency, searched a shipping container from Colombia, which arrived in the Port of Valencia on 30th November. It appeared to be loaded with sacks of charcoal on wooden pallets, but forensic examination discovered that the pallets were made of compressed cocaine powder made to look like wood. And some of the sacks contained

cocaine, disguised as charcoal. Co-ordinated strikes on 1st December led to six men from Liverpool being arrested in the UK and Dubai. The NCA officers also nabbed a 44-year-old at Liverpool Airport, along with a 54-yearold and a 50 year-old in the rooftop car park of the Belle Vale Shopping Centre. Merseyside Police detained a 46-year-old at an address in Knowsley Village, while the Dubai Police AntiNarcotic Unit arrested

a 39-year-old and a 38-year-old at a luxury apartment. Another five men two Colombians, two Peruvians and a Spaniard -were detained on 3rd December by the SNP at a company in an industrial unit in Chiva following the delivery of a dummy consignment of charcoal. Greg McKenna, NCA Regional Head of Investigations, said: “We believe the company was a front for a industrialsized lab, where cocaine was extracted from pal-

lets and charcoal, processed and repackaged for onward distribution across Europe. “This seizure of cocaine, the shutting down of the lab and the eleven arrests will have disrupted criminal activity across the whole of Europe.” The four men arrested in Liverpool have been released on bail pending further inquiries, while the two men in Dubai are still remanded in custody. The five men in Spain are also in custody.

A YACHT dealer wanted in connection with the disappearance of his girlfriend, may have a different identity to the one circulated by police. The Guardia civil have been searching for Simon Corner since British ex-pat Lisa Brown went missing in Spain, close to the Gibraltar border. The 32-year-old, who has an eight-year-old son, Marco, was last seen at her house in Guadiaro, Andalicia, on 4th November. Her distraught family said they had received an anonymous tip-off this week that Mr Corner, believed to come from Old Swan, Liverpool, was also known by a different name. A person contacted Lisa’s sister Helen Jordan, on social media, claiming the man detectives were hunting used the alias Dean Woods.

The wanted man, also 32, could be in Ibiza, Thailand or Portugal, according to local Liverpool media. Lisa’s worried family have now launched a new appeal to find her, and have also urged Corner (or Woods), to contact police. The Royal Gibraltar Police said they are looking for Ms Brown’s boyfriend: “A British man who had been docked at Alcaidesa marina and working in Gibraltar.” Corner, or Woods, served three months in jail last year for having a knife in a Gibraltar nightclub. He was also convicted of common assault, death threats and disorderly conduct in a police station. A tearful Mrs Jordan told the Liverpool Echo newspaper: “It’s terrible. You never think a family member would

just go missing like this. To not be here for Christmas and her birthday, which is just after, is awful. “I was messaged out the blue on Facebook by someone who gave me an alternative name for Mr Corner.” She added: “Her son Marco, is with his dad, and he doesn’t know anything different at the moment. We’ve got nothing to tell him we’re devastated.” Mrs Jordan, from Dumbarton, last spoke to her sister the day before she disappeared during a Skype call from Scotland to Spain. Lisa had recently landed a new job in the betting industry, and there were no signs of her worrying about anything in her life, said relatives. She had been in a relationship with Mr Corner for “a few months”, with Marco’s dad living a 20-

mile drive from them in Spain. The alarm was raised last month when Lisa didn’t arrive to pick up her son from school. Sniffer dogs, divers and helicopters have been used in the search for Lisa, who works across the border in Gibraltar. Reporters from the local media visited the harbour where Mr Corner’s yacht was often moored and spoke with other sailors. He was described as a “wheeler dealer”, who looked “older than his age” and made his money buying and selling boats. Mr Corner’s yacht was moored at the marina in La Linea, near Gibraltar, and Lisa often visited him on board. Guardia Civil officers, heading the investigation, said: “All avenues are being explored. No theory has been ruled out.”

NATIONAL Police in Playa de Las Americas arrested 12 people of various nationalities for the sale of counterfeit items. These included more than 700 garments and 875 high-end watches in shops and market stalls in Las Americas. The investigation began after complaints from lawyers of the in-

ternational brand companies about the alleged sale of fake products at well below the market value. The group were brought before magistrates, who released them - with a criminal record. The probe was carried out by Local Police, based at Tenerife’s South Station, in Las Americas.

Carnival’s eyes on Cultural Heritage THE annual Santa Cruz Carnival, which attracts hoards of visitors from all over the world, could become a national treasure. The Culture Ministry has this week initiated proceedings for the spectacular fiesta - second in the world to the Rio festival only - to become part of the nation’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. And Santa Cruz Council will next year present arguments to incorporate the Carnival on merit, popularity and uniqueness. Festival Councillor

Gladis de León said the Carnival, in addition to its fun and festive components, “constitutes a cultural manifestation of the highest order”. It carries the status of International Tourist interests - even dodging the Franco ban under the guise of “Winter Festival”. De Leon added: “We feel delighted that the Carnival is considered as a representative manifestation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. But we will wait until the title is actually published in the Official Gazette.”

Canarian airports on high CANARY Islands’ airports have recorded their best-ever November with 3,198,480 passengers, representing a 6% increase over the same month last year. According to data released by airport authority Aena, the total number of passengers, 2,230,992, corresponds to international traffic and reflects a 4.9% rise. Of these, 2,019,168 were travellers from the EU and 211,824 from countries outside the EU. A total of 927,035 passengers were involved in domestic flights, which was 10.2%

Toys galore for our needy kids

Spanish cops killed in Taliban’s Kabul attack A TALIBAN suicide attack next to Spain’s Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan left two Spanish police officers dead last Friday.

They were named by the Interior Ministry as 48-year-old Isidro Gabino Sanmartín Hernández, a member of the UIP police intervention unit based in Oviedo, Asturias, and deputy inspector Jorge García Tudela, 45, from Granada. All Embassy staff in the Afghan capital, including the National Police officers responsible for security, were evacuated following an operation spanning 12 hours. At least 10 people perished, including the two Spaniards and four Afghan officers,

and nine others were injured in the attack, which was ended by security forces after the lengthy confrontation. Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said three of the attackers had been shot down, and a fourth had died in the carbomb explosion which sparked the operation. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, staging an Election rally in Alicante, said Spain’s Embassy had not been the target of the attack, as thought initially. The Spanish Foreign Ministry said on Friday afternoon that the Embassy was under attack by the Taliban but the target was, actually, a nearby guest house, as the terrorist group later confirmed. The attack began at around 6pm local time in the Shirpur area of

the city, where many embassies and government buildings are situated. “After a car explosion, some terrorists entered a guest house close to the Spanish Embassy,” said Afghan Interior Ministry’s emergencies chief, Homayoon Aini, after news of the incident broke. “Special forces have arrived at the scene and the area has been cordoned off.” Spain maintains a contingent of 21 military personnel in the Afghan capital under NATO’s Resolute Support mission, mostly providing advice to the country’s army. Since 2002, its armed forces have formed part of the NATO operations in Afghanistan and, tragically, 100 members of the Spanish military and two interpreters working for them have since died.

ADEJE Social Welfare Councillor Isabel Fernández and her team are working to ensure that every child in Adeje is visited by The Three Kings over the festive season. During the week, the Miraverde Association dropped into the Social Welfare office department with a cheque for over 2,200 euros, collected during a series of fund-raising events. The money is going to the Arvelo toy stores, which will supply the department with toys for the borough’s children in need - from families regis-

tered with the Social Services. Councillor Fernández González said: “We are delighted because, thanks to the solidarity and help of the residents of Miraverde, the money will make sure we have the toys we need for children from families who may be struggling financially this year. “We are working to make sure no child is without a gift this year.” Carlos Arvelo, Director-General of the company, said: “We will be able to hand over a lot of toys this year as we will take them from our warehouse and charge

wholesale prices only, so we can purchase a lot more toys with the monies raised.” Marco Flor, spokesperson for Miraverde residents, said: “We hope to raise even more next year. As well as raising money, we have also taken the opportunity to explain to everyone what a good cause it is. “The majority of our residents are German about 400 people - and we have been delighted to hold solidarity fundraising events over many years.” Marco also thanked Frutería Gorrin and Clinca Dental Kutnjak for their donations.

Tenerife is the Christmas target for the British CHRISTMAS will see many Brits heading to Tenerife, according to Lowcostholidays, a flight and accommodation website. We are the most popular destinations this year, and its customers say the main attractions are, naturally, the better weather and beaches. Tenerife is followed by the Costa Blanca, Lanzarote and Malta. And, says Cristina Be-

stard, commercial director of Lowcostholidays: “This year, we found that for long weekends and weekend getaways, our customers prefer city-breaks to domestic and international cities. “However, according to bookings made up to now, the trend changes at Christmas, with beach destinations an indisputable leader.” Around 25% of the website users have cho-

sen accommodation for between four to seven nights and 16.7% for three, five or six overnights. As for the Selected Hotels’ category, 66.7% of the reserves are for four-star places, and 16.7% for those rated three to five stars. In addition, bed & breakfast attracts 33.33%, ahead of roomonly (25%), all-inclusive (16.7%) and half-board (8.33%).

The sponge life-saver A REMARKABLE “sponge” injection, soaking up about one pint of blood, could save the lives of people with gunshot wounds.

The device, called XSTAT, 30 squirts out 92 tiny compressed cellulose sponges coated with a blood-absorbing substance. As they absorb the blood, the sponges swell in the process to fill in a wound and stop more blood flowing out. That could prevent life-threatening blood loss from a gunshot wound victim as he/she is transported to hospital. The method, originally designed to deal with combat-related bullet and shrapnel wounds, has been approved in the US by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for use by emergency services. William Maisel, FDA executive, said: “When a product is developed for use in the battlefield, it is generally intended to work in a worst-case scenario, in which ad-

vanced care might not be immediately available. “It is exciting to see this technology transition to help civilian first-responders control some severe, life-threatening bleeding while on the trauma scene.” Statistics from the US Army Institute of Surgical Research show that about 30-40% of civilians with traumatic injuries die through blood loss. And up to 56% of these deaths occur before the patient reaches hospital. Each sponge has an Xray detectable marker so that no sponges are left behind accidentally when a patient is stitched up. But as yet, the device has partial clearance only and cannot be used in certain parts of the chest, abdomen and pelvis.

No sign of bomb blast in Russian plane crash EGYPTIAN officials are adamant there is no evidence to prove the Russian jet which crashed in Sinai on 31st October was brought down by terrorists.

A preliminary report by investigators on the disaster, which killed all 224 people on board, said it “had so far not found anything indicating any illegal intervention or terrorist action”. Contrary to the initial findings of the Egyptian probe into the plane crash, Russia believes the Metrojet was brought down by a bomb. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov would not comment directly on the Egyptian statement, but told reporters: “Can I remind you of the conclusion of our experts from the special services, who came

to the conclusion that it was a terrorist action.” Last month, a member of the air-accident investigation team in Egypt said investigators were “90% sure” the noise heard on the black box of the airliner seconds before it crashed was caused by a bomb. The US and Britain previously said an explosive device was likely to have brought down the aircraft. A group affiliated to Daesh, the Isis terrorists, claimed responsibility for bringing down the Airbus 321-200, but did not provide any evidence to confirm it. It claimed the bombing was in response to Russian air strikes in Syria. But Egypt’s civil aviation ministry said this week it had found no evidence of a criminal act. However, the statement by chief investigator Ayman el Muqadam implied the investigating team had not reached its final conclu-

sions and was “continuing its work”. He said the search for wreckage extended more than 10 miles from the crash site, visited 15 times by investigators. Wreckage from the site is being moved to a safe location in Cairo to be examined further. The aircraft’s 38 computers, plus two engine computers, have also been looked at, while details of any repairs to the jet since it was built in 1997 are being checked out. Security at Sharm el Sheikh airport has become a widespread concern since the crash, the UK, Russia and various other countries suspending flights from the Red Sea resort. British Airways and easyJet have cancelled all flights to and from Sharm el Sheikh until the New Year. And Monarch has extended its cancellation of flights to and from the UK to the airport up to and including

24th January. Aviation experts identified serious security flaws at the airport in the wake of the crash. Problems including a malfunctioning baggage-scanning device, plus lax searches at an entry gate for plane food and fuel, while officials cited bribe-taking by police officers. Additional levels of baggage screening and searches were implemented on a shortterm basis, and the British government has been working with Egyptian authorities on long-term, sustainable measures to enhance airport safety. Tens of thousands of tourists were stranded at the resort in the aftermath of the disaster, with extra flights laid on by airlines to get families home after the security alert. Security staff were said to be “disinterested” and, seemingly, “liquids in the hand luggage were not even commented on”.

Adeje Mayor pleads: We need more police ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga this week stressed the need for more police officers to add to the borough’s security resources. “We must respond to a reality, which is not only to serve the 50,000 registered people who live here but also the 150,000 daily visitors to Costa Adeje,” he said. “We are at a particularly delicate moment because society faces many challenges to its security forces and general peace.

We have been trusted to not fail.” The Mayor’s forceful words came at a ceremony to celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe, Patron Saint of Adeje’s local police, which took place at the Convent, the Noble lounge of the Town Hall. The Mayor later claimed that more resources, both human and material, were required - not only to give more strength to their own local police but also to increase the numbers

of National Police and Guardia Civil. “Over the past years, and the dawn of the crisis, we have had an increase in crime in tourist areas,” said Mayor Fraga. “It is our duty to try to alleviate this situation to ensure the welfare of both residents and visitors. “After all, we are talking about our main economic engine, and it is our duty to do everything in our power to provide a true picture of security.”

La Gomera film classic sinks beneath the waves THE ocean epic In the Heart of the Sea, which was shot off the La Gomera coast, has sunk at the US box office. But despite making just $11m (£7.25m) after debuting in more than 3,000 cinemas, the film, with an estimated $100m (£65.9m) budget, still claimed second place just behind The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 in the North American box office top five. The film, produced by Ron Howard, was based on the true events which inspired the book Moby Dick. Jeff Goldstein, a Warner Bros vice-president, said: “We stand behind Ron and his vision for the story. We believe in

him. He’s a terrific filmmaker. But some movies work and, unfortunately, some movies don’t.” But Howard has enjoyed his share of film success, his Beautiful Mind winning two Oscars in 2002. His other hits include Frost/Nixon and Apollo 13. Yet his 2006 adaptation of The Da Vinci Code, while a commercial success, failed to satisfy the critics. Warners, which has had hits with films including The Lego Movie, Godzilla and American Sniper, has also had its box office flops with The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Jupiter Ascending and Pan. But Hollywood is bracing itself for the release

of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which debuts this week. Goldstein hoped that In the Heart of the Sea would benefit over the Christmas holidays by having opened before Star Wars. “There’s a cultural phenomenon around the corner,” he said. “Our hope was to get in front of it and get some word of mouth so that, when you get down to Christmas week, you can break through the clutter of those other new movies.” All eyes will be on Star Wars’ first-week takings, which could threaten Jurassic World’s debut of $208.8m, to become the biggest launch in history.

Caring for our old folk is such a rich business LOOKING after our senior citizens can be a costly matter, here in Tenerife and, especially, in Santa Cruz, which is the most expensive in the archipelago. The monthly average in the capital is an eyewatering 1,583 euros per person, per residence, which is also one of the costliest in the whole of Spain.

Santa Cruz City Hall has published a list of centres in which the elderly can reside, either because they are alone or because their families cannot take care of them properly. In the guide, offered through its website, users pay a sum in line with their pension, and the rest is topped up

by the Government. The list of private residences shows that their service in some cases ranges from 1,100 euros to more than 2,000 euros. The price families have to pay to keep their parents safe varies, depending on whether the room in which they can inhabit is single or double occupancy.

Major Tim’s historic adventures in space MAJOR Tim Peake, Britain’s first male astronaut, blasted off to the International Space Station on Tuesday at 11.03am for a six-month mission.

The spacecraft entered Earth’s orbit some 10 minutes into the flight, 210km off the surface of the planet and travelling at a speed of 28,000 km/h as it began its sixhour journey. Major Tim, accompanied by NASA astronaut Tim Kopra and Russian commander Yuri Malenchenko, is said to be the first “official” Brit in space, although Helen Sharman was part of a 1991 commercial British cosmonaut mission. The chemist from Sheffield, now 50, hit the heights in 1991 aboard a Soyuz rocket, spending eight days aboard the Mir space station as part of Project Juno. Her achievement appeared to have been largely overlooked in the run-up to Tuesday’s launch. And anyway, says a leading scientist, Major Tim Peake’s incredible adventures in space will inspire a generation to learn about the benefits of space exploration. Professor Monica Grady, a planetary scientist from the Open University, said his presence on board the Russian rocket had already generated a wealth of publicity, interest and education in British

schools. “Would you have known that there was going to be a launch of a new set of astronauts to the International Space Station if there hadn’t been a British one on board?” she asked on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. “Would Tim Peake’s picture be all over the newspapers? Would his broadcasts be there? “No. We wouldn’t have taken very much notice at all. It really brings home that we have a UK astronaut going.” Professor Grady, who was in Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome for the launch, added: “It’s fantastic to have Italian astronauts and French ones and Israeli ones and American ones … and all that. “But we have got our astronaut there - and just the interest, the way he has engaged with children and the press and the public to highlight the benefits of

space exploration and living and working in space, is immense.” Two of the four rockets sent up to the ISS this year from the Cosmodrome have failed, one exploding shortly after launch and the other burning up on re-entry. But Major Peake’s father, Nigel, said he was more nervous about his son’s journey home on the M27 than his historic space mission. Prof Grady, famously captured on TV celebrating euphorically last year when robot probe Philae made history by landing on a comet, admitted there were “always dangers” with space travel. She said he would be sitting on top of a rocket full of explosives, but added that blasting into space was actually less dangerous than sitting on an aeroplane, on top of “a whole load” of aviation fuel. “On an aeroplane, you are not en-

cased with all the same safety stuff that there is on one of these Soyuz launch vehicles,” she explained. “There is risk in whatever you do, and Tim is trained for that risk and he’s trained for this job!” Major Tim, 43, is hoping the Principia mission will help elevate Britain to the centre of space research. He dedicated much of his time building up to the launch to working with schoolchildren over the last two years. And their input and involvement will play an integral role in the mission. In fact, 10 schools were short-listed to make contact with Major Peake via amateur radio during a 10-minute window when the space station was flying over the UK. Some of the software being used by the Major was designed by children. Two Astro Pi flight

units, each one containing a Raspberry Pi, will be used to run experiments and applications designed by UK school students as part of the Astro Pi competition, held earlier this year. His mission patch was also designed by a 13-year-old after a Blue Peter challenge received more than 3,000 entries. The winning entry was produced by Troy, from Manchester, who said: “Principia refers to Isaac Newton’s principal laws of gravity and motion, so I drew an apple because that is how he discovered gravity.” Leading UK chef Huston Blumenthal worked on some specially-designed space food, created with the help of schoolchildren. They suggested a “rocket lolly”, comprising a threecourse meal of tomato soup, curry and an Eton mess. Major Tim and his two crew members will take part in 265 experiments, including the growing of blood vessels and protein crystals, and melting metal alloys in a weightless environment. He will also note the effects of microgravity on his own body. The Briton, a married father-of-two from Chichester, will contribute to the day-today maintenance of the space station’s life support, power and communications systems. This could involve taking space walks, as well as more down-to-Earth activities such as fixing the 15-year-old suction toilets!

And in April, he will run the entire 26.2-mile London Marathon on a treadmill aboard the space station. Docking with the International Space is one of the trickiest stages of the journey. Yet the whole process is automatic, controlled by computer, and can be carried out manually if required. Major Peake graduated from Sandhurst in 1992 as an officer in the British Army Air Corps. He served with the Royal Green Jackets as a Platoon Commander in Northern Ireland before gaining his wings and flying as a reconnaissance pilot and flight commander in Germany, the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, Northern Ireland, Kenya and Canada. He left the British Army in 2009 and, in the same year, was selected by the European Space Agency as Briton’s first official astronaut. And the experience he is most looking forward to in space is weightlessness. Major Tim enjoyed practising for zero gravity when training for the mission, and can’t wait to start floating around the space craft. “There have been a couple of highlights while training - experiencing weightlessness for up to 30 seconds at a time and training for space walks,” he recalled. His final tweet before take-off read: “GO for flight! Thanks for all the good luck messages phenomenal support! #Principia”

Cameron: Climate change deal can secure our future

Cilla topping chart again CILLA Black was this year’s biggest search trend in the UK, according to Google, which operates the biggest search engine in the world.

Google, which deals with some 40,000 search requests every second, said the entertainer’s sudden death - at her Spanish villa in August was the most searchedfor story of the past 12 months. Lady Colin Campbell, who appeared on this year’s I’m A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! as the sometimes obnoxious Lady C, was second. And the Rugby World Cup - hosted in England in the autumn - was third. Matt Cooke, head of Google’s News Lab in London, said: “Homegrown celebrities have generated a lot of interest in particular, while the passing of wellknown figures made people want to learn more about them. “Some of the defining topics and traditions of British life, such as the General Election results, the Grand National and Jeremy Clarkson, have generated a surge

18th December - 23rd December 2015

in Google searches and will be remembered as events that have characterised the year.” Jeremy Clarkson, the Top Gear presenter sacked from the BBC show earlier this year, was fourth on the list, followed by November’s Paris terror attacks, the iPhone 6s, and the Grand National. Top-trending politician was Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, with former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy - who died in June - in second place. Here in Spain, TV shows lead the way. Searches for information on Big Brother 16, Eurovision, Survivor and The Voice were joined in the top five by searches for Charlie Hebdo. Enquiries on Paris, The European Basketball championships, the Jurassic World movie and transgender reality star Caitlyn Jenner completed the list. The Spaniards are also rather inquisitive. The most popular questions were: How do you block Whatsapp? What if Catalonia became independent? What if there were no moon? What if Greece come out of the euro? And What if the Earth stopped spinning?

THE Paris climatechange agreement has been acclaimed by British PM David Cameron, who said: “It means the whole world has signed to play its part in halting climate change. “It’s a moment to remember, and a huge step forward in helping to secure the future of our planet.” And US President Barack Obama, hours after the final draft of an historic deal was approved at the United Nations talks, following two weeks of somewhat tense negotiations, said: “It’s the best chance we have to save the one planet we have.” The most powerful man on that planet added: “I believe this moment can be a turning point for the world. We’ve shown that the world has both the will and the ability to take on this challenge.” Nearly 200 countries have backed the deal, committing them to limiting the rise in global warming this century to “well below” 2C by reducing carbon emissions. The agreement, which also says they will strive to curb increases even more, to 1.5C, was greeted with cheers, tears and hugging, in addition to a standing ovation in the Paris hall. The legally-binding deal now needs to be ratified by individual governments - at least 55 countries representing at least 55% of global emissions - before taking effect. Those countries most vulnerable to climate change, such as small island nations, had lobbied for a 1.5C limit, while, understandably, big polluters such as

China, India and Saudi Arabia preferred 2C. The draft agreement also includes a five-year review system to increase ambition and differentiation between nations as to what their responsibilities are. And at least £65bn a year will be provided by developed nations to help poorer countries deal with the climatechange impact. With this year forecast to be the hottest on record, world leaders and scientists have warned that a deal on limiting greenhouse gases is vital for capping temperatures and avoiding the consequences of a changing climate. Laurent Laurent Fabius, the French Foreign

Minister, saw the accord as “ambitious and balanced, marking France’s historic turning point”. General Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary, had made an impassioned plea to the diplomats charged with negotiating the deal, saying: “The whole world is watching. Billions of people are relying on your wisdom,” But protesters from environmental and humanrights groups gathered near the Eiffel Tower to denounce the agreement as insufficient. Friends of the Earth chief executive Craig Bennett warned that the deal fell far short of the “soaring rhetoric” from 150 world leaders who attended the opening day of the talks less than

two weeks ago. He added: “An ambition to keep global temperature rises below 1.5C is all very well, but we still don’t have an adequate global plan to make this a reality. “This agreement leaves millions of people across the world under threat from climate-related floods, droughts and super-storms.” And Kumi Naidoo, of Greenpeace, said the accord was a good start - but not enough. “Today the human race has joined in a common cause,” he said. “But it’s what happens after this conference that really matters. This deal alone won’t dig us out the hole we’re in, but it makes the sides less steep.”

Will Benidorm skyscraper be sold for sky-high price? THE In Tempo building in Benidorm, Europe’s tallest residential skyscraper, is being sold, following a liquidation plan. A court has approved the plan, drafted by the builder, Olga Urbana SL, which filed for bankruptcy before completing the landmark structure. The project was started at the height of the property boom in the city of Alicante, which represents all the excesses of real estate development on the Mediterranean coast. The twin towers, with a connecting cone, started going up in 2006, but the site was plagued by troubles from the beginning. For one thing, the architect forgot to add

a proper lift shaft for the 47-story skyscraper when the project was expanded from its original 20 floors. And, until the first 23 floors were built, it did not occur to managers to set up a freight elevator for the 41 workers, who were forced to trek up and down the stairs, carrying equipment in their arms. In another widelyreported incident, 13 workers were injured when the freight elevator - finally con-

structed - collapsed. Ambulances were unable to access the site because, to save money, there was no vehicle entrance. In December 2012, with 94% of the building completed and 35% of units sold, Spain’s so-called “bad bank,” the Sareb, announced it was taking on the loan which a savings bank had extended to the developer. Other creditors include Banco Sabadell and Abanca. But even that has not been enough to save In Tempo. Interested parties now have four months to come forward with an offer. And while there is no official asking price, the building has been assessed as being worth 90m euros.

the opposition. We were quietly confident we would not see any detail from the pension tax relief consultation - but we’re equally confident that we need to prepare for a late night on Budget Day 2016! Automatic Enrolment: What does this mean? Since the 2008 Pension Act, every employer has had a responsibility to put certain types of staff into a Staff Pension Scheme, and to contribute towards it. And since 2012, in an attempt to protect dwindling Pension Funds in the UK against increasing life expectancy and the additional financial

burden this creates, the Government has required that all employers offer a Work Place Pension Fund for all employees earning over £10,000 per annum. Thus, theoretically, reducing the reliance on the State Pension pot in later years. This, effectively, will put what could be an impossible additional financial burden on employers, both within the small business category and also larger conglomerate enterprises, who will have to find up to an additional 3% per employee to be compliant with the requirements.

Inevitably, it will also add additional financial strain to employees, who must contribute up to 5% of their salary into their Work Place Pension Scheme. However, employees do have the right to opt out of any offered and taken up Auto Enrolment Scheme. Understandably, the actual process of implementing and operating the Work Place Pension Fund has been difficult to say the least, which is why it was announced in the Autumn Statement that the minimum contributions needed for a scheme to meet the minimum require-

ments, under automatic enrolment, have been delayed. Minimum contributions were to have risen from 2% of qualifying earnings to 5% from October 2017, and 8% from October 2018. But now, the rise to 5% will occur from April 2018 and 8% from April 2019. The Government is doing this to reduce some of the complexity smaller employers would have faced. Whether Spain will follow suit remains to be seen! State Pension: The basic State Pension will again be increased by the triple lock to £119.30 a week from April 2016. The new single-tier pension, introduced from April 2016, will be set at a maximum of £155.65 a week. Remember that in order for you to be

entitled to a full UK state pension in the UK you must have contributed for a minimum of 35 years. Don't Miss...

More youngsters are working now

Spain writes off debts of billions SPAIN is writing off 1,709bn euros of Cuban interest, created by Havana’s lengthy delay in repaying its debts to various developed nations of the Paris Club.

The sum is part of Cuba’s 7,731bn-euro debt, which the Group of the Creditors of Cuba - within the Paris Club

- has decided to forget after more than three decades. France and Spain are Cuba’s main creditors, along with Japan and Italy. Others include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, The Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK. The Paris Club, an informal group of public creditors created in 1956, includes officials from 20 developed countries who, periodically,

meet to try to resolve the payment problems of debtor nations. The decision concerning Cuba’s enormous debt was made possible through an international and multi-lateral agreement, in which Spain plays an extremely active role. The South American island, once a Spanish colony, actually owes the Paris Club about 10.08bn euros, of which the 7.73bn interest accrued will now be over-

looked. In exchange, Cuba has pledged to repay the remaining 2,364bn euros over an 18-year period. Cuba has not paid back the medium-andlong-term debt accumulated with the Paris Club nations since the Eighties. But despite overlooking Cuba’s vast interest sum, the Spanish Government is still owed 537m euros, which is the principal on the island’s debt.

THERE is more employment for Canarian youngsters, it seems. The last 12 months saw a stunning increase across the country, and especially here.

According to employment agency Adecco’s Job Monitor, the number of working people, aged 25 and over, increased by 61,300 - 8.9% against the national 2.7% figure - which was the biggest rise in Spain, while the under25s’ increase was 8,300 (26.4% against the country’s 11.5% average). In the last 12 months, the total number of employed people increased by 69,600 (9.6%), which is the largest improvement in 13 years at least. That sums up seven consecutive quarters of the year with employment rises - a sta-

tistic not recorded since December 2007. Job creation is a little more balanced between the sexes than a year ago. Men totalled 50,800 jobs (+12.9%), while Canarian women registered 18,900 (+5.7%). In the last 12 months, the number working in the Islands from the four training levels has grown. Some 5,000 people with primary education (+5.6%) have been recruited, with lower secondary 9,800 (+4.7%), 36,800 people with upper secondary or vocational training (+20.5%) and 18,000 with higher education (+7.4%). The latter two are the widest variations between all autonomy. The occupancy improved by 5.5% among Spaniards, while among foreigners it has grown by 32.5%. And immigrants have captured more than half of the new jobs: 34,900 against the Canaries’ 34,800.

TV Guide

18th December - 23rd December 2015

Alex Polizzi works to find employment for jobless military veterans. After months of coaching and professional help, Alex is hoping her four unemployed veterans are ready to take their first steps into civilian jobs. All have suffered from post-traumatic stress since leaving the military and have struggled to find work. Three of the veterans have huge work opportunities ahead of them and to succeed they will have to let go of the past and draw on every ounce of the selfconfidence that Alex has been trying to drum into them over the past six months. Only Lee has withdrawn from the job market altogether, so he can have fresh treatment for a resurgence of his PTSD. Meanwhile, Alex continues her ambitions to make a wider impact connecting employers with jobs to veterans seeking work. She wants to pilot a scheme in Plymouth that could roll out across the country to help the 120,000 working age veterans across the UK who find themselves unemployed.

The Victorian photographer Francis Frith spent the best part of his life documenting Britain. His aim was to photograph every city, every town and every village in the land. He and his team took tens of thousands of pictures and left us with an invaluable record of a Britain frozen in time. Now, John Sergeant is attempting to follow in Frith and his team’s footsteps, finding out what has changed, what has stayed the same and what has gone forever, and he unravels some of the mysteries of this unique archive. This time, John’s journey continues along the north east coast, where he searches for a missing rock formation in Hartlepool, visits the Victorian seaside resort of Saltburn-by-the Sea and meets a family in Whitby whose ancestors were captured on camera over 120 years ago. To complete his travels John also takes four photographs to capture the modern setting of the Frith pictures.

BAFTA Celebrates Downton Abbey, a star studded TV event hosted by Jonathan Ross will air this Christmas on ITV. This one off special is the definitive insight into the world’s most popular drama with unprecedented behind the scenes access from cast and crew. Exclusive access on set at Highclere castle and in the studio was granted for the TV special as they filmed their final episodes of the series. Other highlights include: Julian Fellowes talks on stage about the shows creation and its many secrets; Hugh Bonneville and Dame Maggie Smith will take part in a specially written sketch on stage; Dame Kiri Te Kanawa performs ‘O Mio Babbino Caro’; Julian Ovenden performs ‘My Heart Stood Still’; What Downton Abbey means to me – talking heads from stage and screen and royalty will talk about the show and what it means to them; and Dame Julie Walters presenting the BAFTA Special Award to Julian Fellowes and the entire Downton Abbey cast, as part of a tribute that celebrates the outstanding global success of the programme. Peter Fincham, ITV’s Director of Television said: “When we commissioned Downton Abbey six years ago, little did we know it would go on to become the phenomenon it is today, not only loved by our ITV viewers, but also countless others around the world. I am delighted for everyone at Carnival films and the entire team involved in the production, that they have been honoured by BAFTA with this tribute and Special award.” Amanda Berry, OBE, Chief Executive of BAFTA, said: “I am delighted that BAFTA has paid tribute to Downton Abbey, an extraordinary series that has flown the flag for British drama since 2010. Our tribute will take us backstage with the cast and crew to reveal what’s made it both a national treasure and global phenomenon.” Gareth Neame, Executive Producer of Downton Abbey and Managing Director of Carnival Films said: “As Downton Abbey moves towards its conclusion with the final series, I speak for the entire cast and crew when I say how honoured we are that the Academy has recognised the show with this Special award. Not only is Downton a much loved show in Britain, it has huge success in both the US and right around the world, waving the flag for Britain and our creative content and that’s why BAFTA recognition means so much to us.”

Cue The Queen: Celebrating The Christmas Speech

18:55.................... World’s Strongest Man 2015

To herald the year that Queen Elizabeth II became Britain’s longest reigning monarch, Kirsty Young takes a unique look at the story of the Royal Christmas broadcast and how the tradition, started by King George V in 1932, has found a place at the heart of Christmas Day. At 3pm on Christmas day, every year families across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth gather to watch Her Majesty The Queen deliver her Christmas message. In this first documentary of its kind, Kirsty Young takes a unique look at the history of the broadcast, and with fascinating archive and interviews uncovers the history of this much-loved Christmas event. Beginning with tentative steps in the early days of the wireless, then providing reassurance during the uncertainty of the Second World War, it has become The Queen’s televised message that we all know and love and reflects the social and technological changes that three generations of the monarchy have witnessed over the past 80 years.

Wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan realises a lifelong dream when he travels to the Democratic Republic of Congo to spend time with a family of Grauer’s Gorillas, the largest primates on earth. Gordon is based in the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, one of the last refuges of Grauer’s Gorilla. Park guides lead him deep into the forest to meet Chimanuka, a 30 year-old male gorilla, who leads a family of 25. Although Chimanuka has been habituated to human contact he is wary of Gordon and his camera. He frequently places himself between Gordon and the rest of the family. Gordon slowly builds his trust and identifies key family members, gaining fascinating insight into the family dynamic of these rare gorillas.

Christmas Shopping Fever: John Lewis And choice The Retail Race BBC2, 21.30

From the shop floor to head office, Cherry Healey goes behind the scenes of one of the nation’s biggest stores to find out how it survives the pressure cooker of Christmas. Christmas shopping is a national obsession, and since more than 50 percent of many retailers’ annual profits are made in the last quarter of the year, for John Lewis and its competitors Christmas has become a year-long, full-scale military campaign. Charting the relentless countdown to Christmas 2015 - from the midsummer Christmas press launch, to the honing of the ad, to the discounting frenzy of Black Friday - Cherry sees the John Lewis team tackling the multitude of challenges presented by our changing shopping habits. With British households spending on average close to £800 on goods in the six-week run-up to Christmas, today this battle for our seasonal spending is fought on the high street, online, across all media and in homes all over the country. Cherry discovers John Lewis is now having to cater for a new breed of savvy online shoppers. The competition used to be rivals on the high street, like Debenhams and M&S, but now the retailer has to contend with a host of online rivals too. This year, the John Lewis logistics teams and online systems will be working hard to cope with the demand for click-and-collect and home delivery (a third of John Lewis’s business is done online), and customer services teams will be under intense pressure to deal with any complaints if deliveries go astray.

Harry Hill in Professor Branestawm Returns BBC1, 17.20

The original mad professor is back, as Harry Hill reprises his role as Professor Branestawm but this time he has a rival. Can he beat the self-proclaimed greatest inventor in the world, Professor Algebrain (Steve Pemberton) in an inventing competition, and win the cash prize to settle his out-ofcontrol tax bill? When Lady Pagwell (Dame Diana Rigg) dies, leaving a substantial sum to fund local inventing, it could mean the end of Professor Branestawm’s money troubles. But scheming local councillor Harold Haggerstone (David Mitchell) will stop at nothing to thwart Branestawm, and insists that Pagwell holds an inventing competition to decide who gets the money. So Haggerstone tries to hire his own rival inventor - without much luck - until Professor Algebrain from an unspecified European country turns up, Haggerstone thinks he’s on to a winner.

Entertainment

18th December - 23rd December 2015

By Jamie Droo THEY say it’s the most wonderful time of the year, but for the entertainer it is definitely the busiest, and can also be the most stressful. Tourists flock to Tenerife for some festive fun and Christmas sun, and their expectations are high when it comes to entertainment. For the majority of acts who work the stages here, their diaries are a little plumper than usual - and extra work has been taken on as the showbars get a big customer hit. The work is always there for an act. But because of this important time of year, not many of them have free spots available, so the pressure is on to be fit, well and able to perform. That’s because, should an act fall ill, which in

37 CW

Our stars must be fit & healthy most cases is unavoidable, it’s hardly likely that the venue could replace the act with a high-calibre artiste at short notice. A lot of the Island’s artistes use their own microphones these days, even though equipment supplied in venues is of a reasonably-high standard, because microphone heads can be a germ farm if they are not cleaned regularly. Disinfectant sprays can be purchased in music shops which, I believe, are totally overpriced. And although they work and are easy to use, it is a lot more cost-effective if the microphone head were unscrewed and cleaned properly. This can be done easily, and in five minutes, with washing-up liquid, or the solution venues use to wash their glasses. If it’s good enough to disinfect glasses which have been handled and used by various people, then it is more than

good enough to disinfect a microphone head and foam pop-guard inside. The moisture has to be taken out of the foam before it goes back into the mic, and should be bone-dry, so an easy way to do this is to use the WC hand-dryers. This clean should be done on a daily basis, especially if the artiste is being offered a microphone also used by lots of karaoke singers. Another alternative for acts to avoid illness is

for them to carry their own microphone heads, which simply screw on. They are a standard-fitting for most mics, and nearly all venues tend to use the same ones. The worry doesn’t end there for the act. It may not be an illness that stops them from working but, because of the extra workload, vocal strain is always a concern. There is no point in trying to struggle through a gig when an artiste’s voice has been strained

and singing becomes difficult. Doing that will only end up with him or her cancelling more work in the long run. Some acts have five or six shows to perform during the course of New Year’s Eve - and for most, they are backto-back gigs. Then you have to consider the traffic between venues and transport reliability. All these dynamics for a touring act have to be considered. Most holidaymakers watching many of these artistes will not think about this. And why should they? They’re here for a good time and the entertainers facilitate that, although their job entails so much more than an hour at a time on the stage. Tenerife’s entertainment scene is like a finely-tuned engine, and all the components have to work together. It is not uncommon for venues to adjust their show times slightly to accommodate an artiste or, indeed, to enable another

venue in a different area to book the same one. Although businesses work independently of one another, the whole scene genuinely works as one. Everybody makes good money over Christmas, which makes them all happy. And it is the most wonderful time of the year for everyone, for lots of different reasons. The fun and enjoyment created for audiences by the entertainer is always taken for granted to a certain degree. But entertaining is more of a calling than a job. It is something the person or group feels the need to do. I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very merry Christmas. And to all of the Island’s entertainers, who will be working so hard in the coming week, I hope you all have the best time, creating wonderful memories for your audiences over the festive season. Happy Christmas to one and all.

Travel

By Vanessa Vee IT’S that time of year when we really do like to let our hair down and party, and the popular Insomnia VIP at Sea boat party is running a one-off Christmas special. The boat-party season usually runs from April until October, but there has been lots of interest and inquiries to keep it going throughout the year. But this winter, organisers are simply throwing the odd party until the trips return to full swing in March, when all the stags and hens are over. Insomnia is a music brand owned by two of the North’s most definitive figures in house music and promotion, Tom Zanetti and Kane Towny, whose names are on the tip of every party-goer’s tongue. With their DJing, producing, song-writing, running a record label,

clothing line, festivals, multiple brands, endless businesses and even a TV show, all under the “Sleepin is Cheatin” mother-ship, there isn’t much the duo haven’t conquered. In November, the boys were signed by Universal and Sony and have released a track called Darlin which, only last week, was BBC Radio One Extra’s track of the day. Music is where their hearts lie, and they have a string of releases to prove it, with major track signings, support from artists around the globe - and a crazy calendar of gigs all over the UK and Europe! Their unique sound has a heavy bass influence, catchy vocals and 4x4 beats. Insomnia live DJ and PA sets are amazing and guaranteed to make any party. Whether it be club, pool, beach or boat, these guys know how to set it off. Meet in The Sky Bar in Puerto Colon on Sunday,

from 1.30pm and, with background tunes playing, the mood will build as everyone congregates. Swap your ticket for a boarding pass then, eventually, walk round to the pontoon where the luxury catamaran awaits. Once on board, the photographer mingles, capturing every picture opportunity. The friendly crew welcome you aboard and then, after the safety briefing, its time to start the threehour trip - with a completely free bar! You can choose anything you fancy, from soft drinks, to beer, to spirit and mixers, vodka & Red Bull, Juicee, and then their infamous house cocktail, “Insomni-Juice Plus - a real life-changer. And just to enhance the festive spirit, mulled wine is on the list. But be warned: this is most definitely not a whale-anddolphin-spotting, chillout trip. Far from it! This unbelievable event

is all about the music, and the DJ and MC are constantly stoking up the crowd, with everyone dancing, getting merry and enjoying themselves. And there’s no upperage limit! Last season, quite of few of the older generation went sailing, the tops being a 76-yearold guy who, apparently, had the time of his life! After stopping off in a bay for you to swim around and cool down a little, the music will also be taken down a level, and by this I mean tempo - certainly not volume! This is a party boat ... and party you will, for the duration. You have

to be there to believe the amazing, feel-good atmosphere generated. On the journey back, a Champagne spray will be fired to great music, as well as lots of cheers, screams and laughter. The DJs and MC make sure this is a truly memorable experience - and you just won’t want to sit down! Back into port, and you’ll discover that all photographs from the day are available for free on the Insomnia Tenerife Facebook page. One noticeable thing, which makes this boat party stand out from all the others, is that there are absolutely no party

games, as stressed by Team Insomnia. That’s because they are simply not interested. It really is all about the music. And the party doesn’t end with the boat trip. Straight after disembarkation, everyone, and I mean everyone, heads to the Sky Bar for an afterparty and free, festive nibbles. The entire show is suitable for groups and couples of any age, as long as they are at least 18 and aware that extreme partying is on the cards. This Sunday, the MCs will be DJs Dylan and Grokie, from Jumping Jacks on the Veronicas strip. The 55-euro tickets for Insomnia can be purchased in all hotel receptions and excursion offices, or online at a discounted price on www. insomniatenerife.com For more information, reservations, plus group and residents’ discounts, call 690 126 477.

Cheers! Family’s personal wine is now going on sale CANDELARIA makes a good case to be the jewel in the Tenerife crown, and now it has something else to shout about. Coming soon to a table near you ... Candelaria Wine! The city has just one winery, but if its success is anything to go by, there could be more very soon.

The family winery, in the Araya, neighbourhood, is owned by Nicasio Diaz Gil. The vineyard has been in his family’s hands for generations and they have always made their own tipple, for personal use. Then, four years ago at the height of the financial crisis, something changed. Nicasio’s

daughters saw a gap in the local wine market. Deborat and Maeva knew that all vintages were consumed by family and friends, and the rest was sold in bulk. But, says Deborat: “It was precisely those friends who convinced us to start bottling when they repeated, again and again, the high quality of

our wines. “Today, we want to expand the winery and give it new technologies, steel drums, presses and improve what has, until now, been wine-making at home. “Maeva handles the technical section, and we have both soaked up all the expertise in winemaking.”

Deborat also makes it clear that “everything is crafted at home - from the bottling to the placement of the labels. “But given the demand and increased production of grapes, we want to build a machine that fills the bottles and such.” The wine is named Rebusco, which is the name

of a slope that exists in Araya. “But it’s also a wine term,” said Nicasio. The small winery, which will now sells its wines in restaurants and hotels, hopes to move into the large shopping centres. Nicasio recalls that the wine of the Candelaria or Güímar region was a precious treasure in the 18th century.

Gem of a restaurant - and gem of a feast

SITUATED on the mountainfacing side of the Apolo Centre in Los Cristianos, you could be forgiven for not finding Kikiriki, or not even knowing it has been there since 1998.

Kikiriki, owned and run by Cordobeses (from Córdoba in Andalucía) Antonio García Mora and his wife Carmen Baños González, it is a gem of a restaurant. It offers typical Spanish and international cuisine at very reasonable prices: starters begin from just 1.25 euros

for garlic bread. Antonio was in the process of introducing his new menu when we visited, so we decided to combine some of the new items with their tried and trusted favourites. If you fancy a sociable starter, you can’t go wrong with the Pan Catalán; chunks of lightlytoasted, rustic bread, rubbed with garlic and tomato, and topped with the best-quality Jamón Ibérico. The onion-and-salmon quiche was our other starter selection, and it didn’t disappoint. It was creamy and flavoursome, and not shy on the salmon. Kikiriki is known for its roast chicken. What

Carmen puts in the seasoning is a closelyguarded secret, but, suffice to say, it’s delicious. The half roast chicken costs 5.70 euros - and, honestly, it was the biggest half-chicken I have ever seen! It was accompanied by four sauces, all very different, and all com-

plementing the meat perfectly. If you’re not feeling adventurous, then try the pepper sauce, which has just the right balance of creaminess and heat. There is a Roquefort sauce for lovers of blue cheese, but the two stars in my mind were the spicy tomato sauce

Bryan is back but now he is the owner with his mum in the kitchen for the famous home-made food & all her excuisite & authentic recipes of mojo & Ali-oli. Still serving their chicken dishes including grilled chicken breast, spicy chicken & honey chicken garlic chicken, with a pint of beer for only 1 euro!! Open for breakfast & sandwiches all day until 10pm. A new addition to the menu, which starts at 12noon until 4pm, includes 2 courses & a drink for only 6.80 euros & will change daily (not only chicken dishes).

(be warned; it has a kick), and their special Kikiriki sauce, featuring cream, tomato and tarragon, with French origins. Antonio and Carmen have included loin of cod to the new menu, which is what we chose as our second main course. The cod can be prepared in several ways: battered, simply grilled, with garlic or with onions. We received a large piece of light, flaky, cod loin, served with garlic. The garlic was subtle enough to taste without overpowering the wonderful fish, but if you fancy it stronger, then do ask. Our side-dishes again showed a selection of what is on offer at Kikiriki. We opted for garlic potatoes (I see a

theme developing here) and chips. But I had already been told about their Creamed Spinach Gratinée, so we had to try that, too. It was the perfect accompaniment. Once we thought we had finished our feast, waitress Ellie from Ecuador appeared with not one but two desserts. We really had to force them down (*ahem!*) but both the lemon meringue pie and the hot almond cake just smelled so good, we couldn’t ignore them. The lemon sorbet accompanying the desserts was a great palate cleanser; delightfully fresh and zingy without making your face crumple. Call 922 753 074 for bookings.

SHE doesn’t always get it spoton. but when she does, Rita Ora really knows how to ring the changes.

ANIMAL lovers have been warned for years that having a pet in the bedroom may affect their sleep. Dogs and cats snore, fidget, wake-up early and take up space.

stylist run wild with ideas. Her stunning wigs and hair-pieces were used to great effect to show a new style nearly every week on X Factor. There’s rarely a look this girl cannot pull off; she has one of those faces that suits nearly all styles and colours. Don’t get me wrong because she has made a few mistakes, but that’s what hair is all about: trying something different and pushing those boundaries. When she is being styled by her hairdresser, close attention is paid to what her look is,

fashion-wise, and this is teamed up brilliantly with her hair. If she’s dressed up, she can pull off chic, and if she’s all pop princess, funky looks great on her, too. There’s rarely a look that doesn’t do her justice. Try to think of one other celeb who justifies my 2015 hair award and you’ll have to think long and hard before recalling another star so innovative with her hair. So congratulations to you, Rita, for doing my trade proud - and setting the standard for hair and styling alike!

SASSY SEASONAL SHOES By Carl Pattison

IF you’re not splashing out this year on your party outfit, or you just haven’t seen anything that’s caught your eye, maybe you can revert to shoes - those old faithful accessories!

They will make any outfit feel like new again, as long as you pick the right pair. If you’re wearing your little black dress, you will really turn heads with a stand-out pair of heels. After all, you won’t

knock them dead at Christmas or New Year’s Eve in a pair of flats, will you? So get yourself out there while on your Christmas-present dash and hunt down some heels to be seen in. Metallics look the best when trying to create a statement look, or add flash of colour. Red looks amazing against a simple black dress, and it works well if you’re teaming it up with a bag. You can really bring an outfit to life if your shoes do all the talking. You don’t even have to break the bank, either.

I know you girls love to have those little designer numbers tucked away, but a simple, inexpensive pair can look just as stunning. If you want to throw caution to the wind, there are a multitude of designers who simply cannot make new and exiting designs quick enough. Just remember that you will be wearing them for years, so don’t go for anything too outlandish that will bore you quickly. Pick classy yet sassy shoes … and get yourself noticed for all the right reasons.

Now, though, the latest research by a leading American clinic says people who cuddle pets at night actually sleep better. Scientists surveyed 150 patients, 49% of whom owned animals, about their sleep habits and their pets. They found that those who slept with their pet in the room, or even on the bed, felt more safe and secure and, thus, had a better night’s rest. The Mayo Sleep Clinic, in Arizona, found more than half of those with animals allowed them to sleep in the bedroom or on the bed. And while 20% of pet owners did complain of interrupted sleep because of “wandering”, “snoring” and “whimpering”, lots agreed that having their pet in the bedroom didn’t cause any problems and many said it was an advantage. They said having their pet on the bed or bedroom relaxed them and made them feel secure. And I know that feeling, having had up to four cats sharing my bed at one time in Ten-

ionship stemming from a pet in the bedroom or on the bed.” However, sharing your bed with a pet is certainly not for everyone. A study in 2013 by the same clinic reported that around 10% of people said their sleep was disturbed by pets. A recent study of 23,000 dog owners found that more that half people let their pets sleep on their beds. Dr Krahn said: “Many pet owners view companion animals as family members which they want to incorporate into as many aspects of their life as possible. “Because humans spend considerable time sleeping, a pet owner’s desire to have animals close at night is understandable. “As more households include multiple pets, the challenge of securing appropriate sleeping arrangements is increased.”

erife. Those who went to bed on their own felt more secure, and reported that they slept extremely well with their cat or dog under the covers with them. “One 64-year-old woman said she felt more content when her small dog slept under the covers near her feet,” said study author Doctor Lois Krahn. “One married woman even described her two small dogs as ‘bed warmers’. A 50-yearold woman said she ‘did not mind when my lovely cat’ slept on her chest, and another described her cat as ‘soothing’. She added: “Patients volunteered that they deliberately acquired a dog or cat to help them relax. “People sleeping alone, not always single but sometimes with a partner who travels or works some nights, more often spoke of the beneficial compan-

The truth is that despite many similarities, they are actually very different. There are also many different forms of Yoga, as well as mat and machine-based Pilates, which makes it harder still to compare. Here’s a rough guide to their main characteristics, so you can decide for yourself which suits you better. The easiest thing is to try both, of course. After that, you’ll probably find that, naturally, you prefer one or the other, although there’s nothing to stop you carrying on doing both. Similarities General results: Both, when practised regularly, will produce stronger, leaner muscles and a more flexible body. Pilates exercises are often more intense, which sometimes means you notice results quicker. But they are both wonderful methods to

tone and strengthen all the muscles groups in your body. Mental benefits: Concentration plays an important role in both Yoga and Pilates, and the psychological and emotional benefits that come from taking regular classes in either are important. Reduced stress and anxiety, greater selfesteem and a better overall mood are just some of the long list of proven advantages. Differences Breathing: You need to breathe in both classes, of course! But the techniques used are different. In Yoga, you breathe in and out through the nose, often moving in sync with the breaths taken. A part of the class is usually dedicated solely to breathing, in fact; this is called pranayama. Breathing exercises in yoga help you to relax, while at the same time sending the breath to areas or muscles where there is tension or stress. In Pilates, you inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth, and breathing is seen as an invaluable way of providing muscles with the oxygen they need to exercise effectively. Focus: Pilates classes focus primarily on core strength. Improving the muscles around the abdomen to support, strengthen and straighten the spine. It works not only the dominant muscle groups but also the deepest layers of muscle tissue and

muscles which are often overlooked completely. Great for people who like a more structured workout. Yoga, on the other hand, focuses on the broader muscle groups and on increasing flexibility and balance.

Spiritual side: At the heart of both Yoga and Pilates is a deep understanding and awareness of how strongly the body and mind are connected. But Yoga goes one step further, adding the spirit as well.

Those with more scientific minds will probably prefer Pilates for its structure and logic, whereas exploring your spirituality is a big part of Yoga practice. Many Yoga classes also incorporate meditation or chanting, both to help focus at the start of a class, as well as to finish on a relaxing note at the end. Injuries: Anyone with injuries can benefit enormously from the stronger muscles and greater flexibility, achieved through both Yoga and Pilates. However, some Yoga poses in particular can make any existing problems worse. Whereas Pilates has its roots in anatomy and aims to balance out weaker muscles to create equality on both

sides of the body, Yoga can create even greater imbalances. Origin: Yoga dates back over 5,000 years ago to India. Over the centuries, it has spread to several cultures and evolved into many different types, including Ashtanga and Bikram. Pilates began around 1950 only and is named after its German inventor, Joseph Pilates. He was a keen anatomist and Yoga follower, who created the exercises as a form of rehabilitation and strengthening the body to prevent illness. Activate runs regular Pilates and yoga classes. Live Arico news

Our Festive Thanks for your support wish to you

THIS is the final Live Arico news of the year, and we wish you a fantastic Christmas and a prosperous and healthy 2016. We also thank you again for your support because we are nothing without you, and we would not be able to carry on helping animals. It has been a bittersweet year for us. We were happy to open our third charity shop, based in Golf del Sur, which has gone from strength to strength. But we were terribly sad to say goodbye to our rescue horse,Katie. If ever proof were needed that “you can’t win them all” ... but we had a damn good try! So if you attended one of our benefit events, bought a bargain in our shops or dropped a coin in our collection boxes, we thank you from our hearts. And if you adopted one of our dogs, or, indeed, adopted any dog from a shelter, then you have really been a star, and will be rewarded by your furry friend forever. By the way, we still have some calendars left, obtainable in any of

our charity shops. Keep up with us on Facebook for regular stories and doggies in need. And for information about anything related to Live Arico, call Sue on 629 388 102. Compliments of the season to one and all. Thank-you, Harveys We had a nice afternoon last Saturday at Harveys Bar, Mirador Strip, Los Cristianos, when Derrick Lynes hosted his first Live Arico fund-raiser. There was some fab entertainment from Spencer Robson, Elaine Alexander, Kenn Sharratt, Emma Blacka, Scott Bateman, Chrissy Dean, Debbie Diamond, Michaela Jay, Paul Monroe, Cara and Suzy q. Thanks to all, and to Mark and Mandy for allowing us into their venue, and our Live Arico volunteers for selling merchandise and raffle tickets. We will be back at Harveys soon, so watch this space. Boxing Day bash We are back on the Top Square in San Blas on Boxing Day for our three-monthly shenanigans on the

Top Square. It will be hosted by Suzy q, and entertainers will include Colin Stevens, Jed Bolton, with his tribute to Rod Stewart, and Slam, with the songs of Jim Steinman, MeatLoaf, etc. There will be more guests on the night. Our Xmas raffle last year was so popular that we have decided to repeat it, with great prizes again. Win a FitBit lifestyle band, a head camera or a drone for just two euros a ticket. This will be drawn on the night. Our shop news Check out the Golf del Sur branch, which is something special! We are situated at Golf Park, on the loop road before the lottery kiosk, and are now open from 10am till 7pm every day (Sundays: 10.30am3.30pm). We also have shops in Los Cristianos, Calle Revron near Churchills Bar, and San Eugenio, opposite Hotel La Nina by Amandas bar at las Carabelas complex. Both shops open from 10am-4pm from Monday to Friday, and until 3pm Saturdays and Sundays.

THE refuge will be closed over the festive period, from 23rd December until 3rd January, and we thank each and everyone of you who has helped and supported us over the last year. So many dogs have been lucky enough to be adopted into new, loving homes with your help. Sadly, we still have 220 dogs waiting awaiting their new home patiently and, maybe, next year their wishes will come true, and that our work will continue, helping the Island’s abandoned dogs. Our Xmas display Please come and enjoy our Christmas event

THANK you so much to all the residents and tourists who came to our fund-raiser at the Heads & Tails Bar, Las Americas. And hat’s off to all the fabulous entertainers who gave up their free time to support us. We had an exciting day, with a Raffle, Tombola and Auction, together with lots of singing and dancing. Our super fund-raiser

Diamond bonus for Lions

As always, it was an excellent evening, with superb service and food, plus a full evening’s entertainment, provided by Martin McCall and Chrissy Dean, who kept everyone enthralled. Debbie Diamond also joined in the fun and sang a couple of numbers. Congratulations to all concerned for a very successful evening. On Sunday (20th Dec), the club stages a Christmas Afternoon Party at the Rendezvous restaurant, in Golf

tomorrow (Saturday) from 3-6pm at the Plaza, Las Galletas. Helping hands needed If you can help us in any way, or pay a visit the refuge in the afternoon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays, from 2-5pm, we would love to see you. Please call the refuge on 922 778 630 for more info.

the fun. A barbecue is available, plus Tombola and Raffle. And our Lions wish all our supporters a Merry Christmas.

Petex (100 euros), Shelia Wilson (40), Paul Ling (50) and Ray Miller (20). Our thanks also to Tracey and Wilma for letting us hold our event in their lovely bar. A special thank you to Sharon Edens, our “Mother Christmas”, who was all dressed up with a big Santa sack full of presents for the children. The total raised for the day was a huge 1,024 euros, which will all be put to helping even more cats and kittens. Absolutely wonderful! We have not had an event for a long time as we are all so busy with

our cats and kittens, but we will make sure they are regular events from now on. Help boost funds We are always looking for donations of good condition/quality clothes for our charity shop, but at the moment we particularly need men’s wear. If you have anything donate and can’t get to the shop to drop it off, ring Mark on 636 590 557 and he will arrange collection from you. Our shop, on San Blas, Golf del Sur, is behind Hiperdino and opens 7 days a week from 10am6pm (Saturdays11am4pm).

Palms take axe to Treehouse WE are now just past the halfway stage in the Direct Telecom Pool League and, after this week’s results, the Division One title race may just be over.

Treehouse A had led the chasing pack behind champions Gaffers A, but their title challenge withered this week in spectacular fashion. An away game against Palms B should have been routine, but Treehouse met a side who potted everything on the night. In-form Palms were 4-0 up swiftly and Shammy then missed a tiddler to gift the visitors a chance, which they didn’t seize. Frame after frame went Palms way and at the finish, the whole league rubbed their eyes at the 11-1 margin. Ouch! It wasn’t the only thumping of the night. A few weeks ago, Terrace Roosters were starting to find some form. But they have been poor this month. What does Andy put in their drinks? This week they had a home game against The Phoenix, who love an early night. And the old boys had their feet up nice and early with the match won before News At

Ten. The visitors started well, and carried on racking the frames up, supping their Horlicks as the Terrace heads dropped. They tried to rally but the damage had been done, and again they were thankful for taking a frame to avoid a whitewash. Tenerife Hammers A, with a couple of games in hand, were hoping to move closer to the top when they travelled to face Gaffers B. The home team were determined to do their bar-mates a favour, though, and put up a good fight across the early frames. But they couldn’t prevent Hammers from taking a 6-3 lead. It looked as though the visitors would go on to take all three points, but Ben and his boys fought back with the next two frames, And at 6-5, it was all on the last frame. The momentum was with the home side in a cagey affair, with so much at stake. And Gaffers B held their nerve, took the final frame and grabbed a great point. Rewind A started the season slowly but have become the form team in recent weeks. They travelled to the Palms Bar to face Tenerife Hammers C and Rewind’s John and his team like to make a fast start. It was no different this time as they took the first session

3-1. They matched the scoreline in session two leaving them needing just one more frame for the win. James pulled one back for Hammers C to make it 6-3 but Steve grabbed the next to give Rewind the win, which moved them to sixth and put the Hammers in all sorts of relegation trouble. Exiles A and Palms A always have close battles, and this one was par for the course. The visitors were in control early, with Darren and Roscoe in fine form. One clearance from Darren was world-

class, but Exiles have some good sticks as well. Stretch picked himself up after an early loss to inspire his side. Palms were 5-3 up and looking good for three points, only for the hosts to rally. God knows what was in the pizzas as Palms struggled after the food break as 5-4 became 5-5 then 6-5 and finally 7-5. It was sickening for Palms A, and the Terrace Bantams know how they feel as they lost a tricky away match against Bluebell A in Los Cristianos. It really was a tight game with neither team able to break through. They couldn’t be separated and, going into the final session, it was nicely poised at 4-4. Marky P took the next to move the visitors into the lead, and Mal had a black to secure at least a point for the Bantams. He fluffed his lines, though, as the black rattled and the white

dropped down the pocket, Al didn’t need asking twice as he levelled the score again. Bluebell A had their tails up and Mick and Mucker quickly dispatched Sparky and Adi to give the Bluebell a much-needed win. The final game of the week saw Phoenix Potters tackle defending champions Gaffers A. The Potters are always confident on their home table, but they were no match for Gaffers. The first session ended 3-1 to the visitors, and they moved through the gears leaving the Los Abrigos pensioners in their wake as they won the next six games to take the points. In Division Two, Treehouse B moved back to the top after a home game against Sabores. With the visitors still finding their feet in this league, the home side quickly moved into the lead. Sabores picked up a couple of frames but could not stop the home side winning to reclaim top spot. Picasso’s A continued their good form in their away match

at Dreamers B as they added another three points to their total. Fran, who is proving to be a shrewd captain, has her team playing good, consistent pool. They performed with confidence against a stubborn Dreamers side, got the job done and are right in the promotion mix. Splash Bar, also on a promotion charge hosted Tenerife Pool Tables. The home side started really well and moved into a 5-0 lead. Harley pulled one back by beating Andy -and it’s always pointed out that Harley is only 10. The fightback didn’t last, though, as Craig and Darren took the next two frames and the points for Splash Bar. In the final match of the night, Hoppy’s B entertained league newcomers Rewind Rewired, who, despite being Direct Telecom League newcomers, know how to play pool. They took an early lead and, once in front, Hoppy’s B had no answer. It didn’t take long for the visitors to take the frame they needed for another win.

Handicap? What handicap? THE John Lowe team handicap competition is a fantastic event, enjoyed by all teams throughout the league because it gives the supposedly weaker teams a chance of knockout cup glory. And it always provides drama, thrills, spills and upsets. But the the quarter-finals, played last Friday, brought us a different kind of upset because, all the sides with higher handicaps won through to the semi-finals, leaving us with just one team from Division 2 left in the draw. What handicap

indeed! There were some really close matches, however, with six of the eight ties being won by the odd point. And of those, none was more dramatic than Gaffers’ lastgasp 4-3 win at Picassos, where they overcame a 304 point deficit. Phew! Also in the Trophy, Pas O Nadas A entertained Sandys Chippers, and claimed their place by four legs to three, while Mitch hit two maximums as Phoenix beat Boothen Titans 5-2. Highlight of that match came in the very first rubber as Boothen’s

John hit no fewer than seven ton-plus scores in the first leg alone, to put Bubbles 1-0 down. That stirred Bubbles into producing his own exhibition stuff, as he won the next two legs in fine style. Both players were applauded off the oche! The other tie in this half of the competition was an all-Division 2 affair that saw Phoenix Flights book their semi final berth with a 4-3 win over previous winners Marilyns. In the Plate competition Legends, the last remaining

Division 2 side, went out to Palms Sports Bar, despite holding a 224-point head-start. And Emerald Lounge may have needed a few more than a 176-point bonus against Boothen Army, who ran out 6-1 victors. An interesting local derby for Bar 180 B player Ami, as her team entertained Emerald Shamrocks, whose Jamie is her Dad! And of course, the match went to a deciding doubles game in which they played each other. That must have been tough

for them, and hopefully, they are still on speaking terms after the Shamrocks pair held on to win that game and stake their place in the next round. Elsewhere, more lastminute drama unfolded at Hoppys Bar as Exiles Bar just missed out by the odd point in another extremely tight match. All that’s left to mention is an important catch-up match between Waterfall B and Ourplace Playgirls - if only because, after 22 straight defeats, Waterfall B actually won! Well

done guys. Marti’s super six CD Tenerife 2 Real Mallorca 1

By Roscoe IT keeps getting better and better for Jose Marti. He maintained his unbeaten start to his managerial career with a plucky win over Mallorca and is now just one match from writing his name in the record books. Tenerife have had 80 official coaches in their history, and only Jose Ramon has gone the first seven matches unbeaten. This happened in 1980 and included two matches against the old enemy, Las Palmas. Marti has avoided defeat against Alaves, Albacete, Cordoba, Girona, Elche and now Mallorca. It’s a fine start when you glance at the table and see the names of the division’s top two on that list. Certainly one in the eye for those who doubted the chance given to the rookie. Last weekend’s win wasn’t pretty, but it was vital against a Mallorca side who look shorn of all their confidence. Yet they actually took a second-minute lead through

Thierry Moutinho, which stunned the hosts. Tenerife were caught napping and they didn’t improve much throughout the first half. It was comfortable for the visitors, but them Marti earned his corn. Young Cristo Gonzalez came on for an out-ofsorts Abel and the match was transformed. He has that burst of pace and couldn’t-care attitude of youth. Tenerife looked brighter still when Alberto came on for Ricardo, who is now starting to show his 31 years. Just after the hour mark it was all-square. Cristo’s sweet finish got the team going and, inside a minute, Omar had the stadium rocking. It was his fourth of the season and he is turning into the find of the season. The back-to-back goals killed Mallorca, who look a side in deep trouble. Tenerife are now 13th in this watertight league - and within touching distance of the play-offs! I know some fans think it’s just a pipe-dream, but why not? The side are gelling, the coach is doing the biz and

there really is nothing to fear. With 25 games to play, we should be looking up, not down. And this week’s test would normally get the fans nervous. You have to go back to 1997 for the last time Tenerife won at Real Valladolid, and it’s 1977 since Tenerife did the hosts at this level. That said, they are there for the taking. They are a fine club, steeped in history with superb support, and normally have a fortress at home. But they are struggling a bit this season. Back-to-back home defeats by Osasuna and Alaves were worrying, although they did win at Albacete last week. Valladolid have two former Tenerife favourites in their line-up. Javi Moyano jumped ship in the summer, while Alejandro Alfaro is in his second season. Alfaro had a chance to come back to Santa Cruz in the summer of 2014, but he went with the bigger pay-check. He was a massive cog in the 2009 promotion-winning side, and he did well in La Liga the following campaign. But injuries have blighted his career since. In fact, he has played just

15 matches for Valladolid, although he has made the pitch in the last five games. Alfaro this week spoke favourable of his period here, recalling: “Every time I think about the time I spent in Tenerife I smile. Those two years I spent there were Position

wonderful. Personally and on a sporting level. The promotion and my first full year in La Liga. It was very nice.” Right-back Javi Moyano was plucked from junior football in 2012 and played 118 times for Tenerife before a surprise

move in August. It was a late transfer as well, and seemed to be about money. This is something Moyano has denied, but he has hardly set the world alight on the mainland. He has played just eight games and finished only four!

Flipping ‘eck, what’s up? Prediction: Draw Last season: 2-2

By Adi Benson FLIPPING a coin last week did not work out any better than actually basing my predictions on form and facts. So this week I have home, away and draw written on pieces of paper, which I’m picking at random. Has anybody got a squid for next week?

Southampton v Tottenham

The Saints are a little off-form and need to get their season back on track after doing so well last time out. Goals seem to be their problem, and they need Pelle to step up to the plate and start showing his worth in front of goal, rather than in front of the mirror. Spurs have managed to remain in fifth spot, largely down to the teams behind them being poor. They are another team who need to move up a gear, but they will still take heart from being just three points from the top four. A bit more creativity could open their door to the Champions league.

18th December - 23rd December 2015

West Bromwich v Bournemouth

West Brom have come under fire this week for their long-ball tactics against Liverpool, which resulted in a draw. Yes, it’s unattractive, but football is a points business and they will be happy to leave Anfield having not lost. It means they are another point closer to safety, and that’s their target. But what a week to be a Bournemouth supporter: first they beat Chelsea and then Man Utd. That has moved them up to 14th spot, but they still have a long way to go if they are to stay up. The confidence those wins will breed will help and they showed some real fighting qualities. I’m not sure anybody will want to face them just now. Prediction: Away win Last Season: N/A

Stoke v Crystal Palace

Stoke have moved nicely up the table in recent weeks with some excellent performances, and their creative players are hitting form at just the right time. With plenty of games coming up over the next few weeks, they have a good opportunity to move into the top half of the table, provided they can keep key players fit. Palace are having a

brilliant season and are nicely poised in sixth spot, level on points with Spurs and just three behind Man Utd in fourth. They are a tough side to beat with a well-organised defence and a speedy midfield, which continue to cause problems with their fast counter-attacks. Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-2

Man Utd v Norwich

United are coming in for all kinds of criticism from their fans, and it has been made worse by the defeat at Bournemouth. Yet they still sit in fourth spot. This game gives them a great opportunity to get the fans back on side by being bold and playing attacking football. Norwich now find themselves back in the bottom three with a hill to climb. They started the season fairly well compared with the other promoted clubs. But they have since been left behind and you now have to fear for them. The teams around them are starting to take points, and they need to keep up, so a win here would boost confidence levels. Last season: N/A Prediction: Home win

Everton v Leicester

Everton were in good form until their last two games, in which they have looked tired - and it’s certainly not the

right time of the year to slow down. They have a very young squad and fans must hope some of the players are not burning themselves out. They need to halt the slump, or risk going backwards. Leicester, on the other hand, just go from strength to strength. Many people pointed out that they hadn’t played any big teams during their great run of form. Well they have in recent weeks and they are beating them! The win against Chelsea showed their desire and team spirit, but can they win the league? At this rate, yes! Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-2

Chelsea v Sunderland

The question on everyone’s lips is: What is going on at Chelsea? The defending champions are now involved in a relegation battle. No Jose Mourinho has gone, will there be a reaction? Sunderland must be licking their lips at the prospect of this game, because everybody can beat Chelsea right now, and they certainly need the points as they

are still stuck in the relegation places. They have showed some fighting qualities in recent games. but they need results. It’s okay fighting, but you need to win. Prediction: Draw Last season: 3-1

Newcastle v Aston Villa

Newcastle are on a roll, with two wins on the bounce against decent opposition, and they will really fancy their chances of extending that run. They seem to have clicked as a team, finally, and look a more solid unit, though their defending can still be a little Keystone Cops. They have added goals now, and that has eased pressure on their defenders. Villa need a Christmas miracle if they are to stay up, but even winning every game over the festive period might not be enough. The damage to the squad has been done by successive poor managers, leaving Remi Garde with a poisoned chalice. Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-0

Watford v Liverpool The

Hornets,

quietly

going about their business, have sneaked into seventh spot. They have a decent defence, which was earning them draws in their early games, but goals were a problem. Now, though, Deeney and Ighalo have found their shooting boots and there is now no stopping them. Liverpool have stuttered in recent games after Klopp made a decent start to life in the Premier League. They still look frail at the back, and I cover my eyes every time they defend a set-piece. They need to find a settled first X1, but injuries are making that difficult. Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A

Swansea v West Ham

Swansea had a fine season last time out and people expected them to kick on and do better. But their summer buys didn’t hit the ground running, and their lack of goals has caused them to go back rather than forward. Sitting just outside the relegation places, this is a massive game for them. West Ham are also going south after an impressive start, but the number of injuries they have picked up has depleted the squad. That is part and parcel of the game, though, and is something they now have to accept. But an away win here would get them back on track. Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-1

Who’s this bloke Mourinho? THE way it is going for him at Chelsea, I don’t think Jose Mourinho will be troubling the top of the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League. Fortunately for all us wannabe managers, we do not have to perform under the pressure the actual Premier League managers find themselves under. It was a real mixed bag this week in the pointscoring team of the week. Stoke and Crystal Palace had decent weekends and provided two players each. The rest came from teams

at the top and bottom of the league, with a player each from Watford, Leicester, Liverpool, Arsenal, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Everton. The two top players were Riyad Mahrez and

Jordan Henderson, who both scored 13 points. It’s now starting to get a little boring at the top of the league, where there was no change again, Trevor Passingham´s Passo Utd still occupying top spot. In second place it’s Frank Devany’s Baines On Toast, who slipped slightly and allowed Trevor to extend his lead to seven points. The top three are also starting to pull away from the rest of the pack as the points’ gap from third to fourth is 32 points.

Henry Edward Arnold, to give him his full title, gets team of the week, with Surplex City FC bringing in 80 points. His top performers were Jack Butland, Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy who contributed 38 points to his total. He also chose to play his bench boost but, with just an extra 18 points, he may now regret that decision. We are now coming up to the festive period, in which games start to come thick and fast. So now, more than ever,

it is important to keep logging in and checking the status of your side. You don’t want to get

caught out as managers start to rest players, suspensions kick in or injuries take their toll.
