Thousands will celebrate

San Sebastian Continued from front In Santa Cruz, the Carnival is officially under way. The annual festivities were opened by Mayor Jose Maunel Bermudez, who said this year’s event would be one of the biggest ever. Bermudez also received the 14 contestants for the Carnival Queen competition. The Gala takes place on 3rd February, and the Mayor was beaming as he presented all the ladies with a bouquet of flowers! The Carnival theme this year is the Eighties, and the popular Murga contests, which begin on Monday, will reflect this. And on Page 38, Vanessa Vee reveals a few of the more popular carnival dates. The South must wait a few more weeks before Carnival season begins, but this coming week

does see one of the highlights of the year. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Adeje honours the town’s co-patron, San Sebastián. This is one of the most popular and engaging fiestas in Tenerife, the highlight being the bathing of horses and other four-legged animals at La Caleta’s La Enramada beach. Last year, the borough celebrated the 100th year of the presence of the San Sebastián statue, which is carried ceremoniously to the sea. It was brought to Adeje by the parish priest of the time, Eulogio Gutiérrez Estévez, and Culture Councillor Nayra Medina Bethencourt said: “San Sebastián is a perfect coming together of people who live in Adeje, and those visiting

the borough. “And the Plaza de San Sebastián in La Caleta is the perfect stage for this celebration of harmonious co-existence.” According to historian John Bethencourt Alfonso (1847-1913), the beach was already a place of worship for the Guanches, where they held prayers and processions led by guadameñes (priests). The first references to the cult of San Sebastian in Adeje appeared in the late 16th century. Initially, people worshipped a picture of the Saint, which is currently in the Church of St. Ursula. According to tradition, from the late 19th

to early 20th century, the festival was organised by Adeje residents.. Then, in the Forties, members of the Brotherhood of Farmers and Growers Association were responsible for organising the event, awarding prizes to the best cattle. The celebration was to go down with the saint from the St Ursula Parish in Adeje to Enramada beach. This festival promotes a meeting in which young and old relive a tradition, involving Island residents. Over the years, country people and local Adeje farmers, joined by those from other boroughs, continued with their

to devotions to the saint in a particular and special way. Many have attributed miracles to the statue of San Sebastián, including cures and favours granted. The celebrations begin on Tuesday with the now-traditional twoday, open-air exhibition of municipal photographs. Then there is the “pinchos” competition, which is always extremely popular. The cheap and very tasty Pinchos are small tapas on a cocktail stick. You can vote for your favourite pincho from 7pm to midnight on the night. Meanwhile Holy Mass, with the Santa Ana folklore group in honour of San Sebastián, begins at 8pm. This is followed by a procession with the Adeje Municipal Band, and concludes with a fine firework display. There will also be a “Parrandas” evening with small music groups playing in public, among them the Paranda Boleros de Armeñime, GF La Diata, AC Cultural Imoque, the Parranda El Mesturao and the Adeje Municipal Folklore group. It’s the perfect warmup for the actual San Sebastián feast day on Wednesday. Events begin at midday with Holy Mass in honour of the saint, sung by the Santa Úrsula de Adeje parochial choir. The procession, featuring the saint’s image, then moves outside and takes the pilgrims down to La Enramada beach, where crowds will be waiting

see the traditional bathing of the horses and other animals! This is a sight to behold. Last year, over 25,000 people enjoyed the bathing, which included 60 animals featuring a few donkeys, domestic dogs, sheep and, who knows, this year there might be a camel or something equally exotic! Given that tens of thousands of people take part in the celebrations every year, Adeje Council has made sure there will be more than adequate security cover, with personnel from the Local Police, the Civil Protection Unit, the Sea Rescue service, ambulances and health professionals. Please take note of any access restrictions on the streets or on the beach, in advance of the procession, because they are in place for the public’s security. Some parking restrictions will be in place to facilitate free flow of traffic and allow people to walk along the streets. There will also be a zone cordoned off for farm animals taking part in the festivities. People are also reminded that they should come in time to park and walk, wearing clothes and shoes that are comfortable. And they should use sun cream (particularly with children) and bring water. If you are bringing you own pets/animals, they must be on a lead - and remember to bring food and water for them as well!

One person drowned every 6 days of 2015 DROWNING continues to be a real problem in the Canaries, figures depicting it as Spain’s secondworst region.

New data, provided by the Royal Spanish Lifesaving Federation, reveals that there was one death by drowning every six days in the past year. Only Andalusia had more drownings (68) representing 16.4% of the total, followed by Canaries (62, 15%), Cataluña (57, 13.8%) and Galicia (42, 10.1%). Under 10% of cases were registered at Valencia (39, 9.4%), Balearic Islands (34, 8.2%), Murcia (19, 4.6%), Cantabria (13, 3.1 %), Aragon and Ceuta (both 12, 2.9%), Castilla-La Mancha (11, 2.7%), Asturias, Castilla y Leon, Extremadura and the Basque Country (all 8, 1.9%), Madrid and Navarra (each 5, 1.2%), La Rioja (2, 0.5%) and Melilla (1, 0.2%). Although it is natural

for the Canarian figure to top this fatal statistic, given the breadth of its coastline compared with other Spanish territories, the figure really is of concern to authorities. In total, 414 people drowned in Spain during 2015, followed by another 23 who died from water-based accidents. Another 79 people were unaccounted for, as a result of possible shipwrecks or drowning on beaches or marshes. This stems from the national count, which notes that the 58.21% of drownings were on beaches, 12.80% in pools and the remaining 28.99% in rivers, canals, ports, swamps and ponds, among others.

New teaching blood wanted MORE than half of teachers in the Canaries are more than 50 years old, and the average age at all stages of education is 48.

A study by the ANPE Canary union shows the ageing of teachers, which has increased in recent years. This is believed to be down to a number of factors all linked to the Economic Crisis. Fewer available jobs, low pay, the need to stave off retirement and the dwindling number of new graduates is all taking a toll. According to the report, more than 50% of the 11,020 teachers in the archipelago, are over 51. The union has released this figure to ascertain the replacement needs looming on the near horizon, and to negotiate with the government administration. The data was presented at the last un-

ion council meeting, in November 2015, which served to address the gaps in the public system facing the Canaries in the coming years. The Ministry of Education and the unions have recently agreed on the next public-job offers, which will be the highest since the crisis began. The Administration will offer 500 jobs, covering various specialities. This selection process, incorporating new teachers, also give a greater job stability to some who have been already working for years without the security of permanent work. The interim or relief teachers add up to 25.53% of the total in the archipelago, although the differences between islands are substantial. In La Gomera (49.60%) and Fuerteventura (49.49%), there are virtually as many permanent teachers as interim. In Lanzarote the situation is similar with 42.94% of teachers not having permanent positions.

Tenerife tops holiday poll JANUARY bookings have already set the year’s pace for the travel industry because they denote popular destinations … and the big winners are Tenerife and Greece.

Paris topped Google’s travel-related searches

last year but this time, for obvious reasons, it has dropped out of the Top 10, vacating the No.1 spot for perennial favourite New York - which was third last year. And while some destinations remain consistently popular, such as Australia and Italy, Turkey also fails to make the Top 10. Google’s findings are borne out by Thomas

Cook, whose spokesman said: “Spain, in particular Tenerife, and Greece, are our most searched-for destinations for a summer holiday.” EasyJet backs the new trend, with easyJet Holiday’s Mandy Round saying: “When it comes to beach holidays, there is a real focus on Spain and Portugal , with the most popular searches

being for Tenerife, Majorca, Lanzarote, Ibiza and the Algarve.” “Madeira is performing more strongly than we would normally expect for this time of year, with Cyprus and Malta also doing well.” A seven-night, halfboard break at the fourstar Bahia Principe San Felipe Hotel in Puerto de la Cruz with easyJet will cost from £318pp in April.

Attacks on health workers going up THE problems facing the Canary health system, most of them concerning infrastructure, funding and recruitment, show no signs of being resolved. And now, there is a new problem - and it’s getting worse! Both professionals and unions are demanding action after a large rise in the number of health workers being attacked. Complaints registered by the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) are increasing. Last year, 291 professionals reported their experience of some form

of aggression while at work. Of these complaints, 222 were verbal, 30 physical and 39 mixed, according to the Directorate General of Human Resources. Overall, assaults reported by health workers in the Archipelago

have tripled in the last 10 years, with a reported total of 2,331 episodes of violence against nurses and auxiliary staff. Specifically, in 2006 when a legal-aid service was launched, 79 assaults were reported. The following year

there were 135; 268 in 2008; 269 in 2009; 261 in 2010; 263 in 2011; 295 in 2012; 226 in 2013; 244 in 2014 and 291 complaints cited last year. As a result, the SCS is extending coverage of a service offering health workers free advice and legal guidance, in civil and criminal matters, as well as legal assistance in any subsequent court proceedings. The agreement between the Canary Islands Health Service and the Canary Council of Bar Associations is fully financed by the Ministry of Health. This has a “Prevention Attacks on Workers Plan”, with staff being trained on how to manage risk.

Jobless heartache in three boroughs THREE out of four unemployed people in the South of Tenerife are registered in the municipalities of Arona, Adeje and Granadilla de Abona.

According to the latest update of the Canary Employment Observatory (Obecan), 2015 closed with 21,251 people registered in employment offices in

the area between the towns of Fasnia and Santiago del Teide. Of these, 15,995 are actively seeking work in the three locations mentioned, which represents more than 75% of those after jobs. The Canary Employment Statistics Service shows that unemployment fell throughout 2015 in the whole region. Arona was tops with 451 people, followed by Granadilla de Abona (407), Arico (138) and San Miguel

de Abona (118). It also decreased in Guia de Isora by (53), Adeje (28), Vilaflor (25) and Fasnia (17). Santiago del Teide remained stable with only a few more jobless than in the starting numbers in 2015. Last year maintained the downward jobless total in the entire southern region, as reflected in 2014 figures that relied heavily on the momentum of tourism, which is the main economic ac-

tivity in this area. In all nine municipalities mentioned, the difference in the annual calculation between those who found jobs and those who lost theirs ended 1,236 in favour of the former. The presence of some cranes operating in several sites also reveals an improvement in the building sector, which suffered a severe slump between 2009 and 2013 and now seems to have regained some ground.

Company boom in Adeje IT has been another fine year for business in Adeje, and official figures have pleased José María Alvarez Acosta, the Council’s Business Councillor.

He has revealed that there were 335 new businesses registered in the municipality in 2015, exceeding the 268 registered in 2014 period. The data breakdown also shows that just 20 companies closed, and Cllr Avarez Acosta said: “We are building trust where investment is

concerned. “The commercial activities being planned respond to a wide variety of sectors, and small, medium and larger companies rely on Adeje to develop their businesses. “That’s due, in large part, to the management of this administra-

Canaries’ big-spending tourists

FOREIGN tourists spent 11.7bn euros in the Canary Islands between January and November last year, which was 3.3% more than in the same period of 2014. The data, from the Tourism Expenditure Survey (Egatur), published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), put the Archipelago second only to Catulaña in Spain’s list of top foreign-spending regions. Spending in the penultimate month of 2015 in the Canaries amounted to 1,189 mil-

lion euros - Spain’s highest all year. The Canaries were also placed second among Spanish destinations in which the average tourist expenditure is analysed. In November, its 1,168euro total was surpassed only by overseas visitors to Madrid, each of whom spent an average of 1,301 euros. However, the archipelago dropped to third place on average daily costs. Madrid was the region with a higher figure by far, with each tourist spending 194 euros per day.

The capital city was followed by Cataluña, with 141, and the Canary Islands, on 130. The main big-spending tourists countries in November were the UK (16.7%), Germany (12.7%), France (8.2%) and Italy (3.6%). British spending rose 7.2% over the same period last year. By contrast, Germany’s outlay decreased by 11.7%, mainly because of the 6.8% decline in tourist numbers. Visitors from France increased their spending by 25.4%, thanks to higher arrivals.

tion, offering effective and immediate responses to problems and situations.” He added: “We have grown both in volume and quality in business, and this has allowed Adeje citizens to benefit.” The report recently presented by his department also reflected that in Adeje, licences for urban records and minor works are resolved in an average of seven days. And major paperwork is completed

in a maximum of 30 days - numbers that reflect well against the national average. “We are pleased with the responsiveness of Adeje Council in all that relates to these procedures,” said Cllr Alvarez Acosta. “This means that there is trust and stability in the Council, which is something society appreciates in its relationship with the administration.” Meanwhile, Adeje Council has granted

planning permission for four major projects: *Refurbishment of Costa Adeje’s Jardines del Teide Hotel *Refurbishment and fittings of the Hotels Paraiso Floral and Oasis Paraiso, in Playa Paraiso *Non-hotel establishment of Corales Barceló five-star apartments of Flanders 10 Invest SL, in La Caleta *Themed five-star luxury Hotel Victoria Swites, of the Fedola group, near Duque beach.

Breast-feeding MP is rapped by opponents A SPANISH MP has defended herself against critics after breast-feeding her baby son during the first parliamentary session since last month’s inconclusive general election.

Podemos MP Carolina Bescansa, who was standing as candidate for speaker - she was defeated - pledged to breast-feed in parliament during her campaign, according to reports. Socialist MP Patxi Lopez won the vote to become the first-ever speaker from a party which did not win most seats in an election. But her success was overshadowed to an extent by the breast-feeding controversy. On Wednesday, Ms Bescansa defended the rights of all parents

to raise their child in whatever way “they are able to or wish to”, after some politicians suggested what she had done was unnecessary and was merely attention-seeking. She told them she was “privileged” not to have been separated from her baby, Diego, since his birth. And he was an instant hit with Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias, who cuddled Diego in parliament. But acting Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz, of the PP, criticised the move as “lamentable”, according to the El Mundo newspaper., while Socialist MP Carme Chacon said it was “frankly, unnecessary”. Ms Bescansa, reportedly, asked photographers not to broadcast her baby’s face. But some critics pointed to the existence of a nursery in the parliament building, which was introduced in 2006 to help MPs manage childcare.

The Podemus MP had previously taken her son into parliament for ceremonial events, including her swearing-in. Iolanda Pineda, of the Socialists’ Party of Catalonia (PSC), also took her baby into Spain’s upper house of parlia-

ment in 2012. And before that, Italian politician Licia Ronziulli was first pictured with her baby in the European parliament in September 2010 when the child was six weeks old. Since then, photos of the MEP with her

daughter have documented the little girl growing up and the Italian MEP has often taken her to the chamber since. Last year a group of MPs in the UK called for a ban on new mothers breast-feeding their

babies in the House of Commons chamber to be overturned. As for the most serious news, Spanish MPs were gathered for the first session of parliament on Wednesday, but deadlock remained over the Government formation. Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party is pushing for a coalition with the Socialists (PSOE) and the centre-right Ciudadanos (Citizens) party, which came fourth in the election. But the Socialists are seeking a deal with Citizens and Podemos. So far, Podemos has refused to drop a demand for a referendum on independence in Catalonia - rejected by the other two parties. If the main parties fail to reach an agreement, King Felipe VI will ask a party leader to form a government and MPs will vote on his nomination. But a new election might have to be held.

Canaries smash airport records CANARY Islands airports enjoyed some record-breaking figures last year, recording a total of 535.86 million passengers passing through.

That’s a 3% increase on the 2014 figures and is a record for the number of travellers to the Ca-

naries. Also, four of the eight airports serving the archipelago finished the year among the 10 busiest in the country: Gran Canaria, fifth with 10.62m; South Tenerife, seventh (9.11m); Lanzarote, ninth (6.12m) and Fuerteventura, 10th (5.02m), according to statistics released by Aena, which controls Spanish airports. Of the total number of passengers, 23.5m, ap-

plied to international traffic, 2.1% more than in 2014, and 11.92m were attributed to domestic flights, which was a 5.5% increase. Airports in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura last year achieved their best historical passenger figures, after growing 3%, 4.1% and 5.5% respectively. But, surprisingly, Tenerife South’s numbers dropped 0.6%.

For its part, Tenerife North was used last year by 3.81m travellers, the same as the previous year; La Palma, 971,676 (6%); El Hierro, 146,790 (-1.5%); and La Gomera, 34,958 (9%). According to Aena data, the La Palma and Tenerife North airports registered the highest rise in international passengers, with 19.1% and 15.8% over the previous year, respectively.

Switched-on Arona! ARONA’S Department of Works and Services has completed work on improving lighting on the Las Vistas beach promenade and other pedestrian areas. The environment has also been spruced up in the 184,764.32-euro (plus IGIC) project, which means there will be a power reduction of 9,040 watts. It’s a significant en-

ergy saving, in addition to a lighting improvement in an area where hundreds of people travel daily,” said Arona Mayor José Julián Mena, who said the work affected control centres at Luis Diaz de Losada, Las Vistas and Salinero. Along with lighting, there has also been some remedial work on the grid and the water

pipes. The enhanced lighting is down to 69 new 70W power units, compared with the previous 150W. Also, electronic equipment has been installed for point-to-point reduction, which is estimated to cut consumption by 20-30%. Councillor José Luis Gómez said this improved display added to other energy-saving

measures introduced in recent months, cost more than 72,850 euros. But this includes a stronger performance from the main grid, plus upgrades to 13 streetlighting sections. The new electronic equipment, together with new LED lighting on the Los Cristianos front, reduces consumption in the Arona town.

The total number recorded in the archipelago in 2015 was 323,121m operations. The airport with the most flights was Gran Canaria, 100,417 operations, followed by Tenerife, Tenerife North and Lanzarote, with 58,461, 53,259 and 50,448, respectively. With respect to cargo, the total tons transported was 37,838. Gran Canaria and Tenerife North were fifth and seventh-busiest Aena airports in Spain, with the most volume of cargo. In December alone, the Canary Island airports were used by 3.18m passengers, 7% more than in the same 2014 month. And of these, 2.12m travelled on international flights (+6.6%), and one million on domestic routes (+7%). The airports catering for a greater number of passengers in December were Gran Canaria, with 1.05m (same); Ten-

erife, 828,897 (4%) and Lanzarote, 473,504 (7%). Fuerteventura recorded 398,909 passengers (4%); Tenerife North, 329,233 (8%); La Palma, 84,976 (1%); El Hierro, 11,605 (-7.1%), and La Gomera, 2,679 (6%). Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura ended December with their largest-ever number of passengers for the month. And as for the number of operations carried out, the 29,136 was 2.3% more than in the same 2014 period.

Spanish doctors’ cure’ HIV-positive patient A MEDICAL breakthrough by Spanish doctors could lift the spirits of actor Charlie Sheen, who admitted recently that he had HIV.

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Another Rick M’Lord I’VE shared my thoughts on the Honours system before in this column, and I’ve often used one rule of thumb. If it’s Sir Mick Jagger then why is it not Sir David Bowie?

The passing of the music legend on Monday went some way to answering that question, as some close friends revealed that he wasn’t keen at all on the title. As we go to print, I am trying to get my head around the death of Alan Rickman. To lose one legend in a week is unfortunate - but two? Like many men of a certain age, Rickman was a big favourite of mine. From his very first film role as Hans Gruber - “I wanted this to be professional. Efficient, adult, co-operative, not a lot to ask. Alas, your Mr. Takagi did not see it that way, so he won’t be joining us for the rest of his life” - he was the ultimate baddie. Stylish, witty, calm and with that twinkle in the eye. No actor in the world can ever portray the Sheriff of Nottingham - “I’m going to cut your heart out with a spoon” - after Rickman. Like with Die Hard,

he should have been Oscar-nominated. Ditto for his roles in Sense & Sensibility and Michael Collins. Touching roles in Truly Madly Deeply and Love Actually displayed his range, and then there was Galaxy Quest. As Alexander Dane - “I see you got your shirt off” - he was essentially sending up himself as a Shakespearean actor, stuck in a low-brow SciFi series. He stole all the scenes in the Harry Potter film and only the producers know why he was never offered the chance to be a Bond villain. We live in a world where it’s now Dame Babs Windsor. Rickman didn’t even get an MBE. I doubt he cared. I know whose work I will be watching this weekend - “I’m going to count to three, there will not be a four”.

Until the discovery that blood-transplants from umbilical cords could cure the virus, the closest medication available was a pill, Truvada, which prevents people from acquiring the virus. However, the cure isn’t that straightforward because the umbilical-cord bloodtransplants must come from one with genetic resistance to HIV. And that is just how Barcelona doctors cured a 37-year-old, HIV-positive man from the same Spanish city. Although the patient died three years later, it was down to cancer because he developed lymphoma. But his death did not discourage

Spanish doctors, who believe they have a solution to the AIDScausing virus which has infected more than 34 million people globally. They tried initially to replicate the technique used on HIV patient Timothy Brown, who was given bone marrow from a donor with resistance mutation from HIV. This mutation affects the protein in white blood cells and provides 1% of the human population with high resistance to HIV infection. The experimental treatment on Brown in a Berlin hospital was actually for his leukaemia, but after the treatment, the HIV virus was also gone. Barcelona doctors could not find a suitable bone marrow for their patient, which is why they suggested blood from an umbilical cord with the CCR Delta 35 mutation, says Rafael Duarte, director of the Haematopoietic Trans-

plant Programme at the city’s Catalan Oncology Institute. The Spanish patient’s blood cells were first destroyed with chemotherapy and replaced with new cells, which included the mutation the HIV virus could not attach to. Stem cells from another donor were also given to hasten the regeneration process. He experienced recovery after 11 days and was cleared of the HIV virus after three months. In March, Barcelona will conduct the world’s first clinical trial of umbilical cord transplants for HIV patients with blood cancers. The project has the backing of Spain’s National Transplant Organisation. While the process is mainly designed for HIV patients suffering from cancer, the therapy allows doctors to speculate about a cure for HIV, says Javier Martinez, a virologist from research foundation Irsic-

aixa. A similar clinical trial in the US was approved in March 2015 by the Food and Drug Administration. The method, developed by Sangamo Bioscience, involves getting stem cells from HIVinfected patients and using a gene-editing tool to turn the stem cells into white blood cells with the CCR5 mutation. CCR5 is a protein that interferes with the virus’s ability to latch on on to blood cells. Calimmune, a drug research company, previously tested the method in early human clinical trials with only 12 patients. The procedure was found tolerable and with low risk of adverse side-effects. Although the genetically modified cells lasted up to four years inside the patients, the trial was considered not large enough to test the procedure’s effectiveness, because of the small number of patients.

Gibraltar snubs British help SPAIN’S Government is asking its British counterpart in London for “bilateral dialogue to find a definitive solution” to the ongoing conflict over Gibraltar.

The petition came in the wake of a statement issued by Argentina, defending its own sovereignty over the disputed Falkland Islands. “We will never consent to the UK entering into any negotiations with Spain in respect of the sovereignty of Gibraltar,” said the Fabian Picardo administration in a statement. On Sunday, Argentina’s Foreign Ministry issued a release, defend-

ing its own sovereignty over the Atlantic archipelago - known as Las Malvinas in Spanish 183 years after Britain’s “usurpation”. The new administration of President Mauricio Macri wants bilateral negotiations of its own with Britain, to resolve the ongoing dispute “in the shortest possible period and in a

fair and definitive manner”. The Spanish Foreign Ministry said it shared Argentina’s position, adding: “Similarly, Spain, in observance of United Nations dispositions, has been reiterating to Britain its desire to establish talks for the resolution of the dispute over Gibraltar.”

Just hours later, the Fabian Picardo administration published a note headed “Gibraltar’s Sovereignty is not a Matter for Discussion”. The release said Gibraltar would like for Spain to “finally come into the 21st century and abandon its medieval claim” over the territory.

First Spanish Royal on trial for 40 years PRINCESS Cristina is appearing in a historic trial, marking the first time a member of Spain’s royal family has faced criminal charges since the monarchy was restored in 1975.

The 50-year-old, who faces two counts of tax fraud - which carries a maximum prison sentence of eight years was accompanied by her husband, Olympic handball medallistcum-businessman Inaki Urdangarin, at the Palma court in Majorca. He will also be with her in the dock, along with 16 others, in the makeshift court building. The Princess is accused of failing to declare taxes on personal expenses, paid by a real estate company she owned with her husband. Mr Urdangarin faces more serious charges of using his Duke of Palma title to embezzle about six million euros in public contracts through the non-profit Noos Institute he ran with an associate. The Princess said nothing to dozens of reporters after arriving at the courtroom. Security was tight around the building after thousands of anti-monarchy protesters in 2014 staged noisy demonstrations while Cristina answered questions about

the case, posed by a investigative judge. Authorities detained one protester with an anti-monarchy flag on Monday, shortly before Cristina showed up at the court inside a sedan with dark-tinted windows. There are so many defendants and lawyers, plus reporters covering the case, that judicial officials were forced to move the trial from a courthouse to a sprawling building complex on the outskirts of Palma, normally used to hold training courses for public servants. The case is being heard in the regional capital of Spain’s Balearics because many of Urdangarin’s business deals were connected with the islands. The Princess and her

husband, who have four children, deny any wrong-doing, and probably won’t say a word during the first week. Judges will have been reading out the 89 alleged crimes committed by the suspects, while lawyers, including Cristina’s, argue to have their clients removed from the case. She denied knowledge of her husband’s activities during the 2014 closed-door court appearance, and a prosecutor recommended she be fined. But a judge decided Cristina could be charged with tax fraud in 2007 and 2008 because Spanish law allows groups to file charges when state prosecutors don’t. Her case was driven

forward by the anti-corruption group Manos Limpias (Clean Hands). The popularity of Spain’s royal family has revived since former King, Juan Carlos, abdicated in 2014 in favour of his 47-year-old son Felipe and his former TV journalist wife. The new king regularly tops popularity polls of public figures. Felipe was proclaimed king in a low-key ceremony in 2014 and stripped Cristina of her Duchess of Palma title in June. Her fall from grace could hardly be more dramatic. After a fairytale marriage to Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin in 1997, Cristina became a darling of the celebrity press, and won praise

for having a salaried job. Her husband, who became Duke of Palma upon their marriage, was part of the Spanish Olympic handball team in 1992 in Barcelona and then in 1996 in Atlanta, where the squad won bronze. The team went on to win a second bronze in 2000 in Sydney with the Duke as their captain. But in 2011, Urdangarin was put under investigation for allegedly misappropriating public funds through the Noos charitable foundation he chaired, and charged with embezzlement, influence peddling, fraud and money-laundering. Cristina, who studied in Madrid and has a masters degree from New York University in international relations,

is also in the dock for suspected tax fraud. a and her husband of their titles as Duke and Duchess of Palma. Ana Romero, author of a book on the end of Juan Carlos’s reign, says Cristina has had a lot of trouble accepting what happened to her. “It’s huge,” she said. “Since 201, her and her husband have disappeared publicly from the royal family, and their expulsion from paradise was, perhaps, all the more painful that it happened gradually.” Cristina’s little brother, with whom she was once very close, did not even invite her to the most important event of his life - his proclamation as King Felipe VI in 2014. Intelligent and sporty, Cristina famously became Spanish royalty’s first woman to get a degree after studying politics in Madrid’s Complutense University, where she attended class with a bodyguard. A keen skier and sailor, she also represented Spain on the sailing team at the1988 Olympics in Seoul. But already in 2004, the couple’s purchase of a huge house for six million euros in Barcelona raised suspicion, with centre-right daily El Mundo asking: “Where is the money coming from?” Now living in Switzerland, away from the Spanish media glare, the infanta works for a charitable foundation, run by La Caixa bank.

Spain’s top tv channel T E L E C I N C O, owned by Mediaset Espana, was the most-watched TV channel in Spain for the fourth consecutive year in 2015, earning a 14.8% share of the audience.

It was the second successive year of TV-ad investment growth in the country, following its deep recession. Mediaset Espana’s channel group, also encompassing Cuatro, Divinity, Energy, FDFT5 and Boing, topped ratings among leading Spanish TV companies. It achieved a 31% share in total, according to Madrid-based, audi-

ence-research company Barlovento. During the past year, TV market’s consolidation continued, with five major TV channels accounting for 52.7% of Spain’s TV audience, against 2014’s 52% figure. Barlovento said the 2014 closure of nine Spanish TV networks led to a slightly-larger concentration of TV

audiences. The recovery of Spain’s TV advertising investment has also consolidated. Over the first nine

months of the year, TV market’s revenues reached 1.4bn euros, 8% up against the same period in 2014. The year also saw Spain’s Ministry of Industry award six new nationwide TV channels. Local companies 13TV, Radio Blanca and Grupo Secuoya will all operate a single-standard DTT channel, while Mediaset, Atresmedia

and Real Madrid TV each won a licence to operate new HD networks. And the mostwatched-TV broadcast over last year in Spain was football’s Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid. One leg of their European Champions League knock-out clash led the 2015 ratings with a 45.4% share, and 8.7 million viewers.

Low oil prices spark emergency meeting THE volatility of oil prices has again been highlighted this week, hit by continuing oversupply, the strong dollar and weak global demand.

And members of the Opec group of oil producers are calling for an emergency meeting to discuss reducing output. Opec President Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu said an extraordinary meeting could be held in “early March”. On Tuesday, Brent Crude fell as low as $30.44 per barrel before recovering to trade 25 cents, or 0.8%, higher at $31.80 per barrel. Meanwhile the US benchmark contract,

West Texas Intermediate, was nine cents, or 0.3%, higher at $31.50 per barrel. Oil prices have already fallen 20% since the start of the year and are close to levels not seen since 2003. Opec members are not scheduled to meet until June, having previously met last month, but the oil-price deterioration has prompted calls from several members for a fresh review of quotas. “We did say that if the price hits $35 per barrel, we will begin to look at an extraordinary meeting,” said Mr Kachikwu, who is also Nigerian Minister of State for petroleum resources. He added that “a couple” of countries had been pushing for a meeting, but would not say which those were. Much will depend on

Saudi Arabia, which is keen to maintain market share and has resisted calls to cut production. The Opec President said: “Saudi Arabia has never held the position that it does not want to talk. In fact, it was very supportive of a meeting before June when we held the December meeting.” But the lower oil price is hurting smaller oilproducing nations, such as Nigeria, Algeria and Venezuela, which are all suffering heavily as the price is no longer high enough to cover the cost of production. It has also had an impact on Saudi Arabia, which announced a budget deficit nearing $100bn (£68.4bn) for last year, prompting tax hikes within the Kingdom. Oil is so oversupplied

globally that countries are running out of storage. The US, thought to have among the largest oil-storage facilities in the world, has nowhere left to store it, according to Paul Stevens, professor emeritus at the University of Dundee and a Middle East specialist. “Storage is pretty much full and people are already talking about buying tankers as floating storage,” he said. “But if supply continues to outstrip demand, the only thing that you can do with the oil is sell it, which inevitably pushes the price down.” There have been thousands of job losses in the North Sea’s oil industry. And investment in exploration has also been cut by big oil firms such as Shell, BP, Total and Exxon Mobil.

Hitler ‘fled to Tenerife’ NO, it’s not a warped joke: Hitler faked his own death in his bunker at the end of the Second World War and fled to Tenerife...

According to a veteran CIA agent, who claims he has proof. Veteran CIA agent Bob

Baer’s research team have used a collection of never-before-seen documents to develop the theory that Hitler did not actually kill himself. Mr Baer said: “The narrative the government gives us is a lie. if you look at the FBI files, it throws open the investigation. “What we are doing is re-examining history history we thought was

settled that Hitler died in the bunker. But the deeper we get into it, it’s clear to me that we don’t have any facts for it.” The American’s team have access to 700 pages of newly-declassified information, and one document states: “American Army officials in Germany have not located Hitler’s body; nor is there any reliable source

that Hitler is dead.” The team claim Hitler “easily” faked his own death through the use of a double, because the corpse found by Russians was said to be five inches shorter than Hitler, and with a smaller skull. In a series on The History Channel, Ex-United Nations war crimes investigator John Cencich interviews an alleged witness to Hitler’s escape. The former Greek construction worker tells Mr Cencich: “In 1945,

I was building a secret construction inside the monastery in Samos. “I had to build secret tunnels and compartments for Germans. Yes, the Germans were Nazis and one of these guys was Adolf Hitler. “He was right there. He wasn’t wearing a moustache or anything. this was May 1945. I realised it really was Hitler because of the airplane.” He added: “I went to work in another town. The first thing I saw in this town was a German airplane. It had landed

in an old potato field. The farmer told me there were five people who landed - they were German.” Mr Cencich said: “The accepted truth that he committed suicide is ambiguous.” When the war ended, many Nazis made an exodus to South America to begin a new life away from Europe. And it is claimed that Hitler travelled by UBoat to Argentina from the Canary Islands, to be reunited with his comrades.

Santa Cruz queues spell euros galore! QUEUES for the January Sales in Santa Cruz, in the city centre and shopping centres, have revived memories of the golden days before the financial crisis. Streets have been crowded with shoppers, and there has been a noticeable buzz in the shopping centres. This has been the best Christmas season since 2007, according to the

employers’ trade union, and expectations are growing for a fine Sales season. Abbas Moujir, General Secretary of the Federation of Urban Areas of the Canary Islands (FAUCA) - in the absence of official figures - said: “There is much optimism in the sector, and we expect a good Sales campaign.” Indeed, the textile sector benefited less over Christmas, not

only through good weather, but because the Sales period began this week. Work contracts for this period are also being positive since, according to all the figures, they are expected to exceed those of the last few years in the archipelago. Discounts range from some 30%-50% in shops, and the average spend per person will be around 60-80 euros.

Hotel investments’ bonanza INVESTMENT in Spanish hotels reached an impressive 2.65 billion euros in 2015 - and 30% of that was in the Canaries. This represents an increase of 124% over the previous year and sets a record high.

According to consultants JLL, the sum surpassed the previous investment record, in 2006, just before the financial crash the following year. The total sum makes Spain the European country with the thirdlargest hotel investment, after the UK and Germany. Hotel assets in holiday destinations represented 54% of the total,

followed by properties in urban destinations (44%) and rural areas (2%). The Canaries (30%) received the highest percentage of that money, which was more, even, than Madrid. And it is further proof of the tourist boom being enjoyed in the islands. The most important new operations in Spain have been,

among others, the sale of the Hotel Ritz in Madrid for 130m euros, Barcelona’s Hilton Hotel, for 60m, and the Jacaranda Hotel in Tenerife for 50m. As for the origin of investments, 74% came from investors in Spain, 16% more than in 2014. Of particular note in this section is that the two main national backers, Hispania and Merlin Properties, in-

vested a total of 964m euros, which was 36% of the total volume. This year, JLL Director Luis Arsuaga expects investment trends to rise even higher. “If the forecasts are met, we would be talking about a 2016 that could dwarf the figures achieved in the past year,” he said. “Yes, 2015 was impressive, but so is the future!”

How Facebook saved life of young Briton A CAMPAIGN on social media for donors to come forward has saved the life of a British backpacker with a rare blood type.

Lucy Hill, who was injured in a moped accident in Thailand, was able to have a transfusion and remains in intensive care, but she is out of immediate danger. The Facebook appeal, by friends and family, went viral and queues of people reportedly turned up at her hospital to give the A negative type of blood she needed for a transfusion. She was so fortunate because less than 1% of Thailand people in have that blood type. Lucy, a 21-year-old from Bury, in Greater Manchester, suffered serious injuries when her moped was involved in a crash with a car in Chiang Mai on Saturday. Lucy, a recent graduate at Leeds Beckett University, suffered a broken pelvis and had emergency surgery, while friends appealed online for donations of A negative. Her friend, Darren Burns, said on Facebook that she had received a transfusion after the campaign prompted the required blood donations. Darren added: “Com-

passionate people from all over the world came together over the space of 24 hours for a girl from Bury! “She’s been my best friend for what feels like a lifetime and, from the updates we’re getting, she’s a fighter. Lucy’s received the blood transfusion she needs. She’s still in intensive care, but is out off immediate danger! “Thank you to social media, the people that shared the status and the people who donated their blood because, really, that’s what made it happen!” An initial post appealing for help was made on Sunday by her travelling companion, Lauren Hall. Lauren wrote: “Negative blood is rare in Thailand and sourcing the blood is difficult. I understand it is your holiday but this is my friend. It doesn’t take long and it will do a great thing. My friend wore a helmet and did nothing wrong.” The appeal was shared 40,000 times within six hours, with hundreds of messages and postings from people trying to help. Lucy’s mother, Alison, is at the bedside of her daughter, who began her trip to Thailand on 3rd January. She studied PE at university and had just started her gap-year, travelling through Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Australia.

Ashes to Ashes, but Bowie’s star will still shine brightly

MILLIONS of David Bowie’s worldwide fans have been paying emotional tributes to the rock star, following his death on Monday, setting up impromptu shrines throughout the globe.

And none bigger than in his South London hometown of Brixton, where hundreds of bouquets were piled up against a long-time mural of his Ziggy Stardust alter-ego - taken from the album’s front cover - on a wall around the corner from where he was born. Vigils were also held outside his New York apartment, where he had lived in recent years, a Dutch museum hosting a Bowie exhibition, among various other international sites. The iconic Bowie, perhaps the most inventive of all singers, died from cancer at the age of 69, surrounded by his family, in New York City. Following an over-

whelming outpouring of grief from celebrities, public figures and music fans, many significant sites were transformed into memorials for the “Thin White Duke”. He had battled the deadly disease for 18 months following a heart attack in 2004 and five others since. His death came just three days after the release of a music video, featuring chilling footage of the singer confined to a hospital bed, his eyes covered by a bandage. Tributes poured in from the good and the great, Sir Paul McCartney saying in a statement: “I will always remember the great laughs we shared. David was a great star and I treasure the moments we had together. “His music played a very strong part in British musical history and I’m proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world.” Bowie’s son Duncan Jones, who directed the Bafta-winning film Moon, wrote on Twitter: “Very sorry and sad to say it’s true. I’ll be

offline for a while. Love to all.” The artist shone like a beacon throughout the Seventies, at the height of his success, and his career hits included Let’s Dance, Changes, Space Oddity, Starman, Modern Love, Heroes, Under Pressure (with Queen), Rebel Rebel, Life on Mars and Dancing in the Street (with Mick Jagger). Bowie released his latest album, Blackstar, on his 69th birthday last Friday. It features just seven songs and, according to long-time friend and producer Tony Visconti, it was intended as a “parting gift” to the world. Visconti wrote on Facebook: “His death was no different from his life - a work of art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. “I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us.” As a measure of Bowie’s immense popularity over half-a-century, the new album was destined to be No.1 today (Friday) according

to the Official Charts Company. Friend and collaborator Brian Eno said: “David’s death came as a complete surprise, as did nearly everything else about him. I feel a huge gap now.” He said he received an email from Bowie a week ago, which was “as funny as always, and as surreal”, which ended with the line: “Thank you for our good times, Brian. They will never rot.” Eno added: “I realise now he was saying goodbye.” The Rolling Stones paid tribute to “an extraordinary artist and a true original”, while Queen guitarist Brian May described him as “a fearsome talent”. Bowie also carved out a successful acting career, including his role as an alien seeking help for his dying planet in Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976. He did a three-month stint as The Elephant Man on Broadway in the Eighties, with other roles that decade including Labyrinth, Cat People, The Last Temptation of Christ and The Hunger.

Benidorm brings sunshine to Irish electric bike firm

A COMPANY selling electric bicycles in Limerick, in the rainy Republic of Ireland, has opened a shop in sunny Benidorm.

Goeco, based in Cappamore, is bringing its famous electric highnelly bikes to Spain, following the firm’s success on the Dragons Den TV show. Paul Mannering, son of company founder Marty, said the time was ripe for the firm to start spreading its wings into Europe “We decided to beat the Irish storms and winter blues by opening the first Irish electric bike facility in Spain,” he said.

“What better place than in the sun, with customers who want to see the sites? And our eco-tourism model does exactly that.” Goeco is even offering Irish customers a big discount if they wear an Ireland or Limerick jersey on a bike ride. Marty has major plans for 2016, with three shops planned in Europe and an expansion of their US outlet in Atlanta, Georgia. All the bikes for sale and hire in Benidorm are built in Cappamore. “We have tried a few bike-hire initiatives here, but the weather and bike culture is still against us, so a warmer more bike-orientated country was a natural choice,” said Marty. Benidorm was the

company’s chosen destination after being contacted by Spaniard, Sergio Ruiz, an electric bike enthusiast. “He was interested in the Irish Rover bike we build here in Cappamore - the model we won Dragons Den with,” said Marty. “We got a little help from him and very quickly looked at a few of his suggestions. “We chose Benidorm because of the massive, all-year-round tourism from English, Irish and Scottish holidaymakers - all nationalities we deal with every day as electric bike experts.” He added: “Surprisingly, Spain didn’t really get the electricbike idea, so we saw that gap and jumped quickly.”

Airline trade picks up after the Paris horror BUSINESS at Air France-KLM is beginning to recover following the ISIS terror attacks in Paris last November, say airline’s officials.

The company recorded lower bookings after the attacks, in which 130 people perished, leading to a 70m-euro (£52m) drop in revenues

last month, with flights to North America and Asia particularly affected. But officials have confirmed that trade picked up towards the end of December, which suggests a “progressive recovery”. Passenger numbers on Air France, KLM, and HOP! dropped 1.1% to 6.2 million. But once Dutch budget airline Transavia was included, total passenger num-

bers were “stable” at 6.7 million. Last month, another airline, Monarch, said passengers had planned trips later, in the immediate aftermath of the attacks in Paris and Sharm el-Sheikh, and that bookings had recovered. Scandinavian carrier SAS also said it had seen a drop in journeys to Paris straight after the 13th November attacks.

DiCapriano given a Golden ovation AMERICAN star Leonardo DiCaprio has won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Movie Drama for his role in The Revenant.

He received a standing ovation, cheers and wolf-whistles as the actor took to the stage to accept the prize. DiCaprio said: “What an incredible honour - that meant so much. Two years ago, we found ourselves submerged deep in nature with all its complications and all the beauty that it gave us cinematically. “This film was about survival, adaptation and the triumph of the human spirit and, more importantly, it was about trust. There is nobody more deserving of that trust than Alejandro Inarritu.” He added: “I’ve never had an experience like this in my entire life. The depths he went to are unfathomable.” DiCaprio said he wanted to share the award with all the First

Nation people who starred in the film, set in 1823, which is about legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass. Earlier in the evening, Inarritu received the Best Director award for the film, and The Revenant was also named Best Drama at the star-studded Beverly Hilton Hotel event. British actress Kate Winslet won the first award of the night at the Golden Globes for her role in Steve Jobs. She beat Jane Fonda, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Dame Helen Mirren and Alicia Vikander to be named Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. The Oscar-winning actress and previous Globe winner played the role of Joanna Hoffman, a close aide to Jobs, the Apple cofounder who died in October 2011. Winslett said: “What an incredible year for women in film. I feel prouder than ever this year to be included.” She paid tribute to her co-star Michael Fassbender, saying: “You are a legend - I would watch you every

day. I still don’t know how you did it. We were all so impressed by you, and overwhelmed by your talent.” Jennifer Lawrence said she “wanted to

be buried next to Joy director David O Russell” after winning the prize for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. She told him: “Every time I’m up here, it’s

And now an Oscar? NOMINATIONS for the 88th Academy Awards were revealed on Thursday in Los Angeles and The Revenant leads the way this year with 12 mentions, including a Best Leading Actor nod for Leonardo DiCaprio. He is odds-on favourite to bag an Oscar finally with this, his fifth nomination. Yet The Revenant is not favourite to win Best Picture. That spot belongs to Spotlight, the true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core. Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The

Martian and Room are also in the running. DiCaprio faces competition from Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne. The Best Actress nominees are bookies’ favourite Brie Larson along with Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlotte Rampling and Saiorse Ronan. Four decades after tasting Oscar glory as Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone is set to win the Best Supporting Actor gong for playing the same character in Creed. Christian Bale, Mark Ruffalo, Mark Rylance and England’s Tom Hardy are also in the hunt, while the Best Supporting Actress nomi-

nees are Jennifer Lason Leigh, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Alicia Vikander and Kate Winslet. Sam Smith has received his first-ever Academy Award nomination in the Best Original Song category for his James Bond Spectre theme Writing’s on the Wall. He will face Lady Gaga’s Til It Happens to You and The Weeknd’s Earned It for the prize. The former was recorded for the documentary The Hunting Ground, while the latter soundtracked Fifty Shades of Grey. The late Amy Winehouse has been nominated for her first-ever Academy Award, while Lady Gaga, Sam Smith

and The Weeknd are among the other music stars to be recognised. Asif Kapadia’s featurelength documentary Amy, on the life and career of the British star, has been nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category. Amy will face What Happened Miss Simone?, along with nonmusic focused films Cartel Land, The Look of Silence, and Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom. The star-studded ceremony - the biggest of the entire annual awards’ season - will be held on 28th February at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. It will be hosted by comic actor Chris Rock.

because of you. Thank you for choosing me, and for your brilliance. “Your love of cinema is so pure and you’re so untainted by all this that you make movies like you don’t care if anyone ever sees them. I mean that as a compliment.” Room star Brie Larson was a somewhat surprising winner of the Best Actress in a Drama prize after beating favourite Cate Blanchett. Sylvester Stallone also received a standing ovation when he won Best Supporting Actor for reprising his role as Rocky Balboa for a seventh time in Creed. The 69-year-old, whose Balboa returns to the ring to train the son of his late friend and one-time rival, fought off competition from Paul Dano, Idris Elba, Mark Rylance and Michael Shannon. Stallone told the starstudded event, before thanking his wife and three daughters for their support. Matt Damon, named Best Actor in a Film Comedy for his role as

an astronaut in The Martian, said: “My kids are watching so I have to thank them because I told them if I got on TV I would say something to them … ‘so get ready to go to bed’.” The Martian was also named Best Comedy Film, the award being accepted by its British director, Ridley Scott. Lady Gaga was named Best Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for her role in the horror anthology American Horror Story: Hotel. Fighting back tears, she said: “I feel like Cher in Moonstruck right now. It’s, like, one of the greatest moments of my life.” Inside Out was named Best Animated Feature Film, while the Best Screenplay award was given to Aaron Sorkin, for Steve Jobs. Wolf Hall was named Best Limited Series or TV Movie, and producer Colin Callender was joined by stars Damian Lewis and Mark Rylance as he accepted the award - and made a plea to protect BBC funding.

More foster carers needed to give kids a decent home THERE are more children in care in England now than at any time in the past 30 years, and Barnardo’s says there are almost 70,000 being looked after.

That’s enough to fill 2,800 classrooms, but the charity is calling on potential foster parents to come forward as part of Fostering and Adoption Week. Figures from The Department of Education show that in March 2015, there were 69,540 children in care, including those who have been fostered and adopted. And the numbers have been steadily rising over the last seven years. Brenda Farrell, head of fostering and adoption at Barnardo’s, says the needs of children can be complex. “The decision to take a child into care is never easy,” she says. “There is always a balance of looking at the family circumstances, issues of maybe abuse or neglect, and then the decision to maybe rehome them. “Each child’s situation is different, and every child requires care and support in a different way. Our foster carers are changing children’s lives for the better. You don’t need to be a saint or a super-hero. “You just need to be able to offer children the loving care they need to help them be themselves at a difficult time.” Pete and Pat Coyne have helped around 70 children in the last 30 years in the West Mid-

lands. They offer shortbreak respite care for disabled children, and fostering, and they have even adopted. Mrs Coyne told Sky News the whole experience has been very rewarding, especially after they adopted their disabled son, Ash. “It gives you a purpose to get up every morning and face the day,” she said. “He’s a joy - but not just him, the other children who we welcome into our home as well. “We are still blessed to have two children that we continue to care for, and we know we are giving all these families a break through short respite breaks.” Mr Coyne pleaded for more potential foster families to come forward, saying: “It’s desperate - it really is desperate to get those children into a safe and loving environment where they can live, grow and achieve - and do all the things all children should do. “It’s imperative - it really is. We need to be there and support these children. For anyone considering fostering, please, please, go forward and give it a try.” The Fostering Network has released figures showing that more

than 9,000 more foster families will be needed across the UK this year. There will be a demand for 7,600 in England, 800 in Scotland, 500 in Wales, and 170 in Northern Ireland. The need for homes for teenagers, disabled children, unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, and sibling groups has been described as “urgent”. Figures show that 40% of fostered teenagers are already living with their third foster family since coming into care, and 5% of teenagers are living with their 10th family. Kevin Williams, chief executive of The Fostering Network, said: “Foster families perform an invaluable duty on behalf of the state, and one that really serves the whole community. “Their work contributes not only to society now but in the decades that will come, as the young people who live in their care grow into independence and, in turn, become adults who give back to society.” He added: “Foster families give children the opportunity of the childhood they deserve - a childhood that, otherwise, they may not have had.”

Morrisons confound City MORRISONS has beaten City expectations with its first increase in sales over the crucial Christmas trading period for four years, despite a tough retail environment. The Bradford-based supermarket posted a 0.2% increase in like-forlike sales for the nine weeks to 3rd January, excluding fuel, marking the first like-for-like rise in two years. The unexpected news sent its shares rocketing 12pc in early trade. Total sales at the grocer, excluding fuel, were down 1.2%, or down 1.7% including fuel, as Morrisons continued to slash prices to attract shoppers. The marginal festive season sales’ rise was a significant turnaround for the grocer after more than a year of falling sales. In September, Morrisons posted a 2.7% quarterly fall in like-forlike sales. Analyst consensus was for a 2% fall in like-for-

like sales for the peak Christmas trading period. However, house broker Shore Capital predicted that sales over the third quarter could be down by as much as 2.6%. David Potts, Chief Executive said: “We are pleased with our improved trading performance over Christmas. “While there is, of course, much more to do, we are making important progress in improving all aspects of the shopping trip, and our customers tell us they are pleased with the changes. “In addition, we have made further progress in debt reduction, and our financial position is strong - and getting stronger.” The supermarket expects restructuring costs to be around £60m - around the upper end of its previous range. The grocer will also be consulting on closing a further seven supermarkets, putting 680 jobs

at risk. The extra closures are in addition to its decision last year to offload 140 convenience stores and close 21 supermarkets. Trevor Strain, Morrisons’ chief finance officer, said the store closures stripped 1.4% off total sales. The grocer said it expected underlying profit before tax to be higher in the second half of the year, with annual profits in the range of £295m-£310m, before the restructuring costs. Upmarket rival Waitrose revealed last week that food deflation was eating into its like-forlike sales growth as it posted a 1.4% fall in sales - its worst Christmas on record. Andy Clarke, boss of rival supermarket Asda, said there “was no growth in the food market”. He told the Sunday Telegraph that he expected 2016 to be another tough year for the major grocers.

Beware the dating apps ALLEGED crimes linked with two of the biggest dating apps in England and Wales - including rape, child-grooming and attempted murder - are up by 560% in two years.

And 2015 saw 412 offences linked to Tinder (for men and women and Grindr (a popular dating app for gay men). The applications may not have been used directly in the crime to which they are associated, but they have been mentioned in police reports. The numbers seem relatively small - Tinder says it has had more than 10 billion matches on its app - but campaigners say they are cause for concern and are likely to be just a fraction of the true figure.

This explains why there have calls for greater awareness of the dangers of dating apps. Tech companies are keen to stress that threats are present in real life as much as online. And Tinder said in a statement: “People with bad intentions exist in coffee shops, book-stores, on social media and social apps. And these examples represent a miniscule percentage of experiences.” Tinder stressed that

they take users’ safety seriously. But the problem is that, beyond a handful of pictures and a couple of lines of text, you have little knowledge of a person’s true intentions. Gay-rights campaigner Peter Tatchell says a public education campaign is needed, warning that the isolated, vulnerable and those desperate to meet a partner are being preyed upon, both sexually and financially. Take Ben, for example. He was speaking with a

man on Grindr and arranged to meet the person at his house. But it didn’t go as expected. He arrived to find a group of the man’s friends there and, after a cigarette and some socialising, Ben had a glass of wine. But he doesn’t remember anything after that. Several hours later, he woke up in an unfamiliar room, alone. He believes his drink was spiked, and said he was unaware of what had happened to him while he was unconscious. Ben didn’t report his experience to the police, but others have done - and in increasing numbers. Despite his experiences, Ben is still using Grindr, although it has made him more cautious. “No more going to someone’s house thinking it’s innocent,” he says. “I guess that’s not what guys are like these days.”

Flying taxi drones are not just pie in the sky IT’S hard to believe, but the world’s first flying drone taxi has been unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The EHang vehicle is held aloft by eight propellers and can travel autonomously, which means a passenger, who simply needs to enter his/her destination on boarding, can just climb in and relax. On-board systems stop the drone from colliding with other aircraft and buildings, and an emergency system allows it to hover in one mid-air spot temporarily in case of an emergency on the ground. The EHang company was founded in 2014 and has so far raised

around £34 million in venture-funding. Executives told attendees at the CES trade fair that it could be the future of personal transport. It can carry a single passenger for 23 minutes at a speed of 60mph, It can be fully charged in two hours, and it features gullwing doors and arms that fold up. Other than entering the destination, the passenger will have no other input into how the drone operates. The company says this will make the machine safer by eliminating “the most dangerous part of standard modes of transportation - human error”. The firm admits it will be several years before the drone is able to go into full production - and then, only if it can be approved by air-safety authorities.

Jagger’s ex to marry media tycoon Murdoch AS Mrs Merton might have asked: “What does international super-model Jerry Hall see in 84-year-old, multi-billionaire Rupert Murdoch?

Whatever it is, Sir Mick Jagger’s ex is making plans to wed the grizzly media mogul after a short time together. They have announced their engagement in the births, marriages and deaths section of The Times newspaper, owned by Murdoch’s News Corporation company. It will be Murdoch’s fourth marriage and a first for 59-year-old

Texan Jerry, who lived with superstar Jagger (said to worth an estimated £200m himself) for many years. The new relationship, reportedly, began in the summer, and a spokesman said: “They have loved these past months together. They are thrilled to be getting married and excited about their future.” Australian-born Mr Murdoch, who now has US nationality, split up with his third wife Wendi Deng in 2013, following her alleged infatuation with former Prime Minister Tony Blair. And Miss Hall’s 23year relationship with Rolling Stones frontman Jagger, with whom she had four children,

ended in 1999. The unlikely Murdoch-Hall couple were first spotted together in public last October at the Rugby World Cup final between Aus-

tralia and New Zealand in Twickenham Stadium. That’s just a stone’s throw from Ms Hall’s costly Richmond Hill home, in the poshest

of London boroughs. They were introduced by one of Mr Murdoch’s sisters and his niece in Australia, reported The Times, which said the couple became engaged at the weekend in Los Angeles, where they attended the Golden Globe awards ceremony. According to the 2015 Forbes, Rupert Murdoch and his family have a net worth of (£7.7bn), making him the 77th richest person on the planet. Murdoch inherited two Adelaide newspapers from his father at the age of 22 and built a media empire. Now executive chairman of News Corporation, Rupert and his family control 120 newspapers in five countries,

including The Sun and The Times in the UK, and they also own book publisher HarperCollins. Jerry continues to model at the highest level, and is also making her way in the world of acting. A friend of Murdoch and Miss Hall said: “They could be the perfect couple, both with strong connections to Britain but foreign roots.” Jerry famously said once: “My mother said it was simple to keep a man: you must be a maid in the living room, a cook in the kitchen ... and a whore in the bedroom! I said I’d hire the other two and take care of the bedroom bit.” Wonder what’s she’s saying now?

STERLING entered the New Year trading lower against the Euro, dropping to its lowest since mid-October. And growth within the Eurozone has caused concern.

But the Pound weakening against the US dollar and the euro is not expected to be sufficient to impact export orders. With the US raising its base interest rate in December, many expected the Bank of England to do the same in early 2016. But when George Osborne spoke out against an immediate increase, this seemed to weaken Pound further

Challenging start to 2016

against its main counterparts. Despite hopes for a prosperous new year, the news from around the globe is: weak Chinese economic indicators; US manufacturing figures down; tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran - and nuclear tests in North Korea! Not the start for which we were all hoping. So what does all this mean for the pound or euro in your pocket? For those who have, perhaps, sold property and wish to send funds back to the UK, this is an ideal time for them as the rate has moved substantially in their favour, compared with last year. Based on an IB (inter bank) rate of approximately 1.33, 100,000 euros is now worth over £75,000, as opposed to when the IB rate was nearer the

1.43 mark. Then, the same 100K-euro total was worth under than £70,000. But, as we know, you can’t please all of the people, all of the time! In December, property buyers were getting around 7.5% more for their sterling to euro compared with this

month. The current rate of exchange means that some people who were looking to buy a holiday home in the Canary Islands last year will find it that bit harder to afford right now. As I’ve mentioned in past articles, let’s not forget that it wasn’t so many years ago since

GBP to EUR was almost One for One, and how excited were we when it rose above the 1.22 mark. It’s human nature that we want to hold off to see if it gets even better when we see a rate of exchange moving in our favour. But don’t forget the

old adage about “a bird in the hand…” There’s nothing more frustrating than letting go the rate you had hoped for, then finding yourself in a position where you have to accept a worse figure as you reach the deadline date for your currency requirements. Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, keep on top of the currency market. The friendly experts at Currencies Direct are only a phone call away whenever you need them. Community makes a point

By Mariano Zunino Siri

SPANISH Law is very complex and in this column, I try to make some sense of what can appear to be a very complicated matter. This week it’s back to

one of our favourite topics: Communities! In Spanish law, the Community of Owners does not have any recognised legal “personality” rights. This means the Community doesn’t have any separate rights over the owners who comprise the community. For example, take the issue of the treatment of the Community of Owners when it comes to the Community of Assets. The Community cannot act through its legal representative who, of

course, is the President. Legally, the “Community” is able to sign certain contracts, such as hiring a maintenance service. It can also sign labour contracts, or an insurance policy, or grant powers of attorney to act before Court on the Community’s behalf. But the Community of Owners has no legal “personality” or individuality. This means it cannot replace the legal rights of a person on some matters. The Community may legally open and operate a bank account. But it cannot, for example, adjudicate on a property in the Community at an auction. The Community also cannot register the ownership of a property on behalf of the Community at the Land Registry. This document would have to be registered by each and every one of the owners, according to their respective percentage or quota. Another example is that a technically-bankrupt Community would face a different set of proceedings to a sin-

gular “personality” human. The difference is most important in many legal matters. However, there are indications that things are changing. A separate issue is the signature of a letting agreement of a “Community” property between said Community and a “personality” (who may be a co-owner). Not long ago, a Community hired a common premises property and applied for registration of the contract at the Land Registry. This was denied by the Registrar who argued, among other reasons, that the property was not registered into the name of the Community because of its lack of legal “personality”. After a number of appeals, the Court ruled that it was possible for the registration of a letting agreement to be held by a Community of Owners. Without considering all the points of the case, it is relevant here to emphasise the possibility of registration of the contract and the legal “personality” of the

Community. The Court understood, after examining the documents (Minutes of the Annual General Meetings, Legalisation of Acts by the Land Registry and the unanimous adoption of the agreement), that we are witnessing an act of mere management (letting contract) via the President (or Vice-President), who is the legal representative, duly authorised by the Assembly unanimously . Therefore, the Court does not share the lack

of legal “personality” of the Community. This is a step towards common sense. There are many Community of Owners who rent out their premises and, therefore, should be well-advised from the very beginning regarding the representation of the Community, taking into account the majority in a General Meeting, for example. Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer registered at the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991.

National Television Awards 2016

Don't Miss...

Wednesday 20th January 2016, ITV1, 19.30 Hundreds of stars and thousands of fans will join host Dermot O’Leary at the 21st National Television Awards on Wednesday 20th January 2016, for the biggest night in British TV. Broadcast from The 02 London, the NTAs honour television’s best-loved shows and stars in the only TV awards ceremony where all the winners are chosen by viewers via a huge nationwide poll – it’s TV’s biggest election! Competition between the programmes in the Talent Show category has been fierce. Which is the public’s favourite Saturday-evening shiny floor spectacular – Strictly Come Dancing or The X Factor? Or do allegiances lie with Britain’s Got Talent or The Voice? The TV talking points of the year compete in the New Drama category, from shirtless scything in Poldark to the domestic nightmare of Doctor Foster, by way of workplace secrets being exposed in Ordinary Lies and the debate over artificial intelligence explored in Humans. But which of these hot new shows will take home the big prize? A new twist for this year’s runners and riders is that factual programmes have been pitted against entertainment shows in a new all-embracing category TV Presenter. Ant and Dec have virtually made the Entertainment Presenter category their own territory for the past 14 years but with the increasing popularity of factual shows, other contenders like Mel and Sue from Bake-Off could be putting celebration candles on their cake. But they also have to beat the ever-popular Graham Norton and Rylan gets his first NTA nomination ever in this category. Making your mark in soapland can be tough, but there are four big success stories up for Newcomer. Gemma Atkinson has caused chaos in Emmerdale as scheming Carly and Parry Glasspool’s Harry on Hollyoaks has been getting Ste hot under the collar. And switching careers from music to acting has definitely paid dividends for Richard Blackwood (EastEnders) and Shayne Ward (Coronation Street). Other categories include Serial Drama, Comedy, Live Magazine Show, Drama Performance, International, Entertainment Programme, Daytime, Serial Drama Performance.

Call The Midwife BBC1, 20.00

The year is 1961, and Poplar is beginning to feel the winds of social change - along with improvements in housing, sanitation and healthcare. But for the midwives and nuns of Nonnatus House who care for the sick and bring new life into the world, it’s business as usual. The personal and professional worlds of the nurses remain entwined, as events in their work impact on their personal lives. Episode One. Easter is approaching, and for the nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House it’s as busy as ever, as babies are born to myriad families across the borough. One such delivery brings with it its own set of shocks, when Patsy helps experienced mother Rhoda Mullucks give birth to a baby with severe deformities. As the mother refuses to reject her new-born child, the father struggles to come to terms with the harsh realities of his daughter’s problems. Support and intervention from those at Nonnatus House proves invaluable as they try to rebuild this loving family. Meanwhile, the new exercise craze has reached Poplar, led by Nonnatus’ very own Trixie. But when she starts teaching a Keep Fit class, the exercises lead to a medical emergency for one of her group. The experience leads her to realise that women sometimes lack a basic understanding of their own bodies, and she aims to rectify it - one patient at a time.

Immortal Egypt with Joann Fletcher

15th January - 21st January 2016

M o n day

BBC2, 21.00

In the third episode Joann explores the magnificent Colossi of Memnon, built under Egypt’s greatest pharaoh, Amenhotep III. Joann explores the dizzying heights of Egypt’s civilisation and the lives of the workers and artisans caught up in Egypt’s most ambitious building projects: The Valley Of The Kings. But this golden age is threatened by the growing power of Karnak’s priests. When Amenhotep’s successors Akhenaten and Nefertiti strike back at the priests with a religious rebellion, it is their son, Tutankhamen, who tries to rectify it. By finding clues in Tutankhamen’s treasure, Joann reveals how his early death was a chance for Egypt to start afresh and rewrite history. With the country restored to its former glory, Egypt’s fate lay in the hands of Theban ‘priest kings’. Joann retraces their final act of desecration, the decades of state-sanctioned looting of The Valley Of The Kings. This lays Egypt bare, making way for a new era of foreign invaders.

24 Hours in A and E More 4, 22:00

The RTS awardwinning documentary series continues. It follows patients treated in the same 24-hour period at St George’s Hospital in south-west London, which has one of the most advanced and busiest A&E departments in the world; a place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every day. In this episode a young boy faces losing a finger. Te n - y e a r- o l d Josh arrives at St George’s having severed his finger during an accident on the school playing field. His mum, Jane, accompanies Josh into resus, but she has a secret: Josh doesn’t know his finger was cut off in the accident. Doctors now face a double challenge: to work out whether they can re-attach his finger, which will require major surgery, and how and when to explain to Josh what has really happened. Meanwhile, 40-year-old stonemason Guido is in minors having dropped a marble slab on his finger.

Trawlermen Tales ITV1, 20.00

“You’re not right in the head if you go to sea. And the sooner you realise that, the sooner you’ll be a fisherman.” - Scott, first mate of the Filadelfia trawler This new three-part documentary series for ITV focuses on the lives of Cornish trawlermen - who battle bad weather, sharks and the very real danger of death to provide for their own families. It also provides a vivid insight into how they struggle to meet the expectations of their wives, girlfriends and children at home while they are away for a week at a time. In the third episode, the fishermen brave storm season and the dangers of operating in rough seas in the hope it will pay off with better prices for their catches at market. They face force eight gales and the constant threat of being swept overboard, and one trawler accidentally catches a shark, which the men must return to the water while it snaps at them.

In episode three, an 18-year-old girl lies trapped in her overturned car and falls unconscious as it slowly submerges into a murky quagmire, and a motorway journey for a family of four turns into a nightmare when their car ploughs into the central reservation and into the path of oncoming traffic. Christmas Eve night, St Austell, Cornwall, and care worker Dannie Phillips lies trapped in her overturn car after it veers of the road during heavy floods and ploughs into a tree. She says: ‘The water was rising quickly and I thought, ‘I’ve got to get out, I’ve got to get out of this.’’ Spotting the upturned car, passerby Mike Tate says: ‘As I approached the car my fears were the worst, I really didn’t know how anybody could’ve survived the impact and I steeled myself really for the worst kind of picture.’ With the murky waters fast approaching her face, Dannie says: ‘When they say your life flashes before you, it really does. I just remember looking up at the moon and thinking, ‘Is this really my time?’…I’m 18, I wanted to have a family, I wanted to get married one day and I thought that’s all going to be taken away from me.’

The Town That Took On The Taxman

15th January - 21st January 2016

W ed n esday

BBC2, 21.00

BBC Two unravels the complex tax operations of some of the biggest companies in the UK, and finds out if it’s possible for local businesses in a small town in Wales to turn the tables by setting up their own similar arrangements. The tax practices of some of the biggest companies operating in the UK have been in sharp focus in recent years, with big-name brands being criticised and the government seeking to crack down on tax loopholes. We’ve heard how creative accountancy can be used to legally pay little UK tax - but how does it actually work, and can the businesses in a small town in Wales make it work for them? Presented by Heydon Prowse, co-presenter of BBC Three’s The Revolution Will Be Televised, this film follows an alliance of local businessmen and women from Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons on this unique theoretical TV experiment as they uncover the tax avoidance techniques multinationals employ, and try to apply them to their very own DIY tax plan.

The Story Of China: Ancestors

15th January - 21st January 2016

T hursday

BBC2, 21.00

Written and presented by historian Michael Wood, BBC Two’s new landmark documentary series The Story Of China (6x60) explores the history of the world’s oldest continuous state, from the ancient past to the present day. Home to over a billion people, China is the new superpower, a country we all want to understand - and Michael Wood argues that to do so we have to look at its history. In The Story of China, he explores the history of the world’s newest superpower, from its ancient past to the present day, travelling across the country to explores the landscapes, peoples, stories and cultures that have helped create China’s distinctive character and genius over more than 4,000 years. Starting in Wuxi, Michael joins the Qin family reunion, when 300 relatives gather to worship their ancestors on Tomb Sweeping Day. “Like the nation, the family has been through so much,” one says. ‘‘Now everyone wants to know - what are our roots?” To answer that question Michael journeys to the plain of Yellow River, where he joins a million pilgrims at the shrine of ancient Goddess Nüwa, who legend says, made the first people from the yellow mud of the Yellow River. Looking for the origins of the Chinese state, he visits the excavations at Erlitou and sees an exquisite turquoise dragon sceptre from 2,000 BCE. China’s first writing is found on ‘oracle bones’ dug up from the Shang royal tombs at Anyang over a century ago. Then at the Beijing Planetarium, we travel back in time as astronomers plot the planetary conjunction that the ancients believed foretold the overthrow of the Shang Dynasty. Next the Age of Philosophers and Confucius, whose book Analects, some say, has had greater influence worldwide than even the Bible. In Xi’an we hear how the First Emperor united China and created the authoritarian Qin state that gave us the word China. Finally we return to the temple fair in Henan for a dramatic night ceremony to give thanks to the ancestors. China, Michael concludes, is rising again, not just because of its economic strength, but because of the incredible solidarity of the Han Chinese view of their own civilisation, their sense of family, and of course, the presence of the ancestors.

With the cloud of Bamford (Mark Addy) no longer hanging over the town, Coates (Clarke Peters) now has the reins of Jericho firmly in his grasp. But in a bid to protect its inhabitants from rogue traders, Coates makes himself fierce enemies, which will have grave consequences for not just him but for the whole of Jericho. Bamford’s departure also means that Annie and her family can begin to settle down. With her regular money coming in from her lodgers, George (Sam Bottomley) employed by Coates and Martha (Amy James-Kelly) earning a wage at the tavern, Annie’s main concern seems to be batting-off the not unwelcome attention of Johnny Jackson (Hans Matheson). But any closeness between them is soon shattered by terrible news – Martha has fallen sick with fever. And the fever is spreading. Charles (Daniel Rigby) and Isabella (Jeany Spark) agree to put their troubled relationship behind them in order to forge ahead and raise capital for the viaduct. But when a ghost from Charles’ past comes knocking at the door, no one can imagine how explosive the consequences will be. Panic grows as Martha’s condition worsens and, as the fever continues to spread, word gets out that it has taken its first victim. It’s essential that Martha sees a doctor, but Coates’ row with the traders has created an obstacle – the road into town is barricaded and violently manned. With Martha’s breathing growing ever shallower, how will they find help in time to save her? Annie (Jessica Raine) has an idea, but she’s unaware of the hornet’s nest that’s waiting to be upturned. In trying to save Martha’s life, the dead will come back to life, and the future of the viaduct will once again be in jeopardy.

15th January - 21st January 2016

By Jamie Droo OVER a decade ago I watched a movie called Heartbreak Ridge, starring the legendary Clint Eastwood. It is all about a veteran US Marine who has seen plenty of conflict already but is now an instructor of Marine recruits.

His training methods are unique, and one of the lines in the movie stood out for me. The message that it carries can always be applied to any kind of work that requires forward-thinking. But before I reveal the actual line, which is so simplistic in its wording, I want to explain why it applies to entertainment. Earlier this week I bumped in to Charlie Hodge, who has b e e n working in

37 CW

Charlie is a Diamond Tenerife for the last 14 years as a singer. Predominantly, his work has taken him along the tribute route and his chosen artiste is Neil Diamond. Over the years, I believe that, alongside Elvis, Diamond has been the most popular artiste to tribute in most holiday destinations featuring an entertainment scene similar to ours. It’s hardly surprising, really, when you look at the Diamond discography. It is vast, and any artiste who takes on the full repertoire must be taken seriously as an artiste. Charlie’s entertainment career began when he toured with his brother, who, funnily enough, was an Elvis impersonator. Charlie took charge of the sound and lighting at h i s

brother’s gigs, and occasionally played guitar. This is where his stage name came about. The real Elvis had a close circle of musicians and backing vocalists who worked on his stage. One of them, referred to as his right-hand man, was a guy called Charlie Hodge. The real Charlie would make sure the real Elvis had water and towels to mop up the wet stuff that seems to leak from lots of entertainers. He also provided backing vocals and musical accompaniment on the guitar. It emerged that our Charlie Hodge had his stage name bestowed upon him by his brother as he stood to the right of him at his shows. So there is the history in the name, but the reason it carried on was because when Charlie decided to relocate to Tenerife, his buddies had business cards made as a comedic gesture to wish him well. And although this was a tongue-in-cheek gesture, it stuck … and Charlie Hodge Tenerife was born! You’re probably starting to wonder what this has to do with one line in a movie about a muddy hill and the 1983 invasion of Grenada. It’s actually more about the one line that really applies to Charlie (no pun intended). Well, here goes. I bumped into Charlie last Sunday at a charity event and we got chatting about the changes which have happened on the Tenerife circuit. When he arrived, 14 years ago, there was so much work available, and most acts were doing two to three shows every night. In those days it was a different place, but, for many reasons, that work has dropped off. Some blame it on the all-inclusive boom, while others say it was because the euro cur-

rency was introduced. Whatever it was, the bottom line is that work diminished quickly. Some entertainers decided to return to the UK, while others decided to ride the storm. Like some, Charlie decided to change his thought process and step out of the comfort zone of a Neil Diamond tribute and work on other projects within the entertainment field. He is a seasoned pro and his experience on stage and confidence in himself as an entertainer would ensure his success. Neil Diamond has always been a popular artiste and his songs will live on for more than a lifetime, so Charlie decided to take advantage of the fact that he had built up his reputation as a Diamond act and still bill his show with the iconic singer. But he also adapted it to involve some great songs from other American solo artistes. His new show, which is very successful, is called Neil Diamond’s American Songbook, which still allows him to sing the classics for which he

is recognised, and also enables him to improvise and play to the audience in front of him. Through the last few years, this change has helped Charlie overcome the adversities this entertainment scene throws at an entertainer, and this is the reason for my analogy with Heartbreak Ridge - and that single line of dialogue delivered by Clint Eastwood. Soldiers are trained to work under pressure and act accordingly in any situation. And although soldiering and military service is very different to entertainment, the ethics taught can be applied to anything. Clint Eastwood’s character, veteran Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway, teaches a bunch of marine recruits to simply “improvise, adapt and overcome”. Charlie Hodge has done exactly that and, because of this, he has always maintained a good, professional reputation as a solid act. And he has been performing in one particular venue for 14 years, every week. The charity event I saw Charlie was at the Market Tavern, in Los

Cristianos, on Sunday. It was for the benefit of a Labrador called Martin, nicknamed Pinky, who’d had a really rough time of it after being buried alive by his cruel owners, sustaining some terrible injuries at the hands of those vile people, as you will read on page 45. Pinky was on the brink of death when found, as I discovered through Justin Quinn, compere at San Eugenio’s Star Bar. Justin began rallying support from the entertainment scene through Facebook, asking each act to perform a 15-minute set at the event. It began early in the afternoon and continued until just after 8pm. It was extremely well attended by the public, and so many acts took the time to help out, too. A special thank-you goes to Andrew and Elaine, a couple who had their hair shaved off to raise money. Singleheadedly, they raised a whopping 2,000 euros. All in all, this was an amazing effort from everyone involved. Let’s hope Martin (Pinky) the Labrador gets better and gets the loving home all dogs deserve.

By Vanessa Vee As you have read on page 3, it’s CARNIVAL TIME!

The annual Santa Cruz Carnival is known as one of the greatest in the world. Although all seven Canary Islands celebrate a carnival in this period, Santa Cruz boasts the biggest, most colourful of all. If you intend to make a stay of it, I recommend highly you book hotel rooms well in advance because of the huge influx of supporters. Our Carnival, running until 14th February, offers a busy schedule as usual and is guaranteed to keep everyone highly amused and entertained. The main highlight is, of course, the famous parade, in which the streets will be filled by onlookers, standing and gazing in amazement at

15th January - 21st January 2016

Don’t miss the Carnival!

the phenomenally-outlandish costumes and the outlandish antics!. The Carnival is celebrated in the streets the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz - and a large variety of stalls and kiosks are set up, giving the area a musical and a festive atmosphere. Once elections have been held for Carnival Queen and the Junior Carnival Queen, a parade is organised to announce the beginning of whole pageant. The following week is also busy, filled with competitions between differing Carnival groups, bands and dance schools; murgas, rondallas, comparsas, fancy-dress competitions and a parade of antique cars. It reaches a climax on Carnival Tuesday with the “coso” (a parade starting in the afternoon/early evening). The Burial of the Sardine is another ritual, carried out in all the places mentioned, although the “burials” in Los Realejos, La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz are the best. The sardine is made

from rags and cloths and in Santa Cruz, an enormous sardine, seated on a throne, is carried through the streets on a float, followed by an entourage of so-called mourners … “pregnant” men and widows in floods of tears and general hysteria. The festivities end on the Saturday and Sunday after Carnival Tuesday, with the “Piñata Chica” and all its shows, street parties, parades and exhibitions. A common question before the event every year is: “What’s happening, where and when, with the Tenerife Carnival?”

As the Carnival is always linked to Easter, the dates are moveable, so here is a schedule of main events to enable you to organise your trips. *The Wednesday BEFORE Shrove Tuesday: Election of the Carnival Queen. This event is a huge evening gala. *The Friday BEFORE Shrove Tuesday: Once it has its Queen, Santa Cruz Carnival takes to the streets on the Friday evening, with the Cabalgata Anunciadora, followed by the obligatory fireworks. *Shrove Tuesday: The Main Parade in Santa Cruz (the Avenida de

Anaga and Marítima), begins from around 4pm and ends in a fantastic firework display at about 9pm. *Ash Wednesday: Burial of the Sardine. This occurs in Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz on the same night. Men dress up as “Widows” to mourn the poor old sardine and, generally, party the night away. *The Friday AFTER Shrove Tuesday: The unmissable Mascarita Ponte Tacón, known in English as the High Heels Drag Marathon, in Puerto de la Cruz. *The Saturday AFTER Shrove Tuesday: Junior Parade in Santa Cruz

and also the day of the Main Carnival Parade in Puerto de la Cruz. *The Sunday AFTER Shrove Tuesday: Sunday morning is the Gran Concurso en la Ciudad de Automóviles Antiguos, from the Calle La Noria, in the old part of Santa Cruz. Do not miss out on this experience. Whether you visit for just a day, or wish to embrace the whole experience, the Santa Cruz Carnival will create guaranteed memories for you. Tenerife Sunshine Travel have the facility to tailor-make your Carnival break. For day-trips to see the main parade on Tuesday, 9th February, we have coach pick-ups spanning from Los Gigantes to Golf del Sur, from only 23 euros per person return, midday pick-ups. For the more adventurous, why not embrace the event and stay for maybe a couple of days? Email travel@tenerifesunshine.com - call 922 751 867 or pop into the office in Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos. WEALTHY people in the Middle East and America are offering fortunes to buy Spain’s ancient olive trees for garden ornaments, or to plant on lawns.

Some of the country’s olive trees are over 1,000 years old and that makes them extremely valuable for these rich folk. If you’re an olive grower, or have a tree on your property, the deal is hard to resist because they can sell for up to 40,550 euros. And in Portugal, one tree sold to a French millionaire for over 64,500 euros. The Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente Foundation is trying to stop the export of these unique trees, liken-

ing the practice to the American plundering of Spain’s Romanesque churches in the 19th century. The Foundation has launched a petition, protesting at the uprooting and sale of these trees, which are not protected by law in most of Spain. France and Italy have banned the sale and export of ancient trees, says the Foundation, while 10 years ago, Valencia prohibited the export of trees over 350 years old, or more than 20ft in diameter. There are, in fact, other ways to make money from these old

By Val Sainsbury SOME e-cigarettes contain enough alcohol to harm the skills of some drivers because they deliver nicotine, by vaporising liquids, which often contain alcohol and other chemicals.

A new Yale University study tested the effects of alcohol in e-ciga-

rettes, and people who smoked the ones containing 23.5% alcohol were found to perform poorly on psycho-motor tests. In addition, scientists warned that the presence of alcohol might reinforce the addictive properties of both nicotine and alcohol when inhaled, They tested subjects using two commercially available e-cigarettes containing alcohol. The devices used in the study contained ei-

ther high (23.5%) or low (0.4%) volumes of alcohol. Neither group reported feeling differently after inhaling vapour. But, the ones who used ecigarettes with the high alcohol level performed worse on psycho-motor tests. In some instances, the study found that they even had detectable levels of alcohol in their urine! Nearly 75% of the commercial e-cigarettes liquids tested in the study

New Year’s hair resolution

By Carl Pattison

IF you are going for a new fitness regime, lifestyle or diet plan to kick-start 2016, maybe it’s time you took a moment to check out what your hair’s doing.

As you’re overhauling the rest of you, does it need a re-vamp? If so, you need to start

at the beginning by asking your stylist to recommend a “new” you - or finding one who is genuinely interested in your precious locks. Hair evolves, just like fashion, and you must re-invent your look every so often and not get trapped in a “hairrut” because there’s nothing worse. Sticking your neck on the line can be a powerful move for any women, but maybe that’s just what you need to find a new hair image! If you’ve always been a certain colour, find a newer way to adapt or

“make-over” your favourite colour. There are hundreds of shades of blonde. And various, inspiring browns, even reds-to-oranges, can all be “speciality mixed” for your desired shade. There is no need to feel tired or bored with your hair because your stylist, like me, should be itching to create something new and inspiring to create a look which, maybe, your hair needs. A good consultation and looking into different options will ensure that 2016 will be the year you ring the changes with your best accessory: your hair! We at Robot specialise in “hair makeovers” and love to send our clients home feeling that what’s being worn on top is their best asset. Make sure you feel the same way, too.

had under 1% alcohol. Yet, the scientists noted, some e-cigaretteusers created their own liquids with higher alcohol content. And, as yet, almost nothing is known about the prevalence and patterns of using e-liquids containing alcohol. Worryingly, senior author Dr Mehmet Sofuoglu, of Yale’s Department of Psychiatry, said: “Given the widespread and unregulated use of e-cigarettes, especially by young people and other vulnerable populations, further studies are needed to evaluate both the acute safety and long-term health risks of using alcoholcontaining e-cigarettes.” The study was published in the Drug and Alcohol Dependence journal. The research comes shortly after US experts called for tight controls on the marketing of ecigarettes, over fears that adverts threaten to reverse “decades of

progress” in preventing smoking. Commercials promoting e-cigarettes reach seven in 10 American middle-and-high-school students, warned the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This “unrestricted marketing”, which uses themes including sex, independence and rebellion, could jeopardise great strides made in tackling youth smoking,

said the CDC organisation. Dr Tom Frieden, CDC director, said: “The same advertising tactics the tobacco industry used years ago to get kids addicted to nicotine are now being used to entice a new generation of young people to use e-cigarettes.” As a result, the CDC has called for tighter controls on e-cigarette sales to limit access to minors.

By Miruna Voicu MANY people buy a Tenerife property for occasional use, and, since it may be unoccupied for long periods, it makes sense for them to buy a much smaller property than they might have at home in the UK.

In addition, it is, of course, much easier to maintain and secure an apartment than a house with grounds and a pool, for example. And in any case, it’s possible to spend much more time outside in our lovely weather here! Nowadays, airlines charge so much for baggage that it also makes sense to leave as many personal effects as possible here, and travel with hand-luggage only. So all personal

Furnishing the smaller properties items need to be stored, which can be a problem in a small space. However, having a small property doesn’t mean it can´t look amazing, and also be extremely functional. In the photo, this apartment has been decorated tastefully. The use of a pale colour scheme for the sofa, chair, carpet, and walls, means that the eye is drawn through the area, making it look like a united whole, and bigger. The back wall has been painted in a bold blue, which can sometimes make a space look smaller, but it is key to making this property look rather designer, as the same tone is picked out in the cushions on the sofa, and the bowl on the shelf. The mirror on the lefthand wall in the sleeping area is placed strategically to reflect the light from the facing window, and to make

the whole area appear bigger and brighter. The division between the sleeping and living areas is also quite clever. Although you are only in one of the spaces at a time, both rooms would appear small and rather oppressive had it been separated by a solid wall. However, by using an open-shelf area, and then curtaining, this can be left open, giving a more spacious, airy impression. The curtains can be closed at night to create an intimate, cosy space. Comprehensive use of storage is essential in a small property like this, so every available space has to be utilised, including beds that lift up effortlessly to reveal loads of storage underneath, and using the backs of doors for hanging towels and dressing gowns. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.

MESHED-UP 2016 By Carl Pattison

WELCOME back to our Fashion Review which, this week, we fast-forward into Spring/Summer 2016 to see what’s hot on the runway, and how you could be catching this year’s hottest trends.

There is far too much to concentrate on, but here are a few highlights.

Many a Fashion House went all-out for Offthe-Shoulder numbers “Spanish style”, bringing into this year our everlasting love of Seventies’-inspired clothing ... fringing but not in a Cowboyesque style, sauntering down runways and giving a contrast to the big “mesh”influenced fashion hit this year. Material-wise, we are looking at lots of sueding and fabrics that are quite ridged, to create the “effects” called for by this year’s fashions. Even pleats which are

normally inspired by floaty fabrics will be finer, yet still hold their flowing, symmetrical lines. If you’re adding in accessories, look no further than flat, slippertype mules, not forgetting that half-moon handbag to finish off your retro look. Tassels adorn every item, from jewellery to shoes, adding a luxurious feel to your basic wardrobe. This will be your year for “dressing-up” There’s nothing casual about 2016, so bring on the glamour!

Come see our animals WE are holding an Open Weekend tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, between 1-4pm, and are looking for volunteers to spend some time with the many refuge animals.

Maybe you would like to brush them, walk with one or two, or even play with some, sharing some much-needed love around. The kennel areas will be open to the public, so you can wander around our facilities. And if you are looking to adopt a dog, this offers you an ideal chance to search for a loving pet. We do not charge adoption fees, and every animal is fully microchipped, passported, inoculated, castrated or sterilised, with each

ONE female cat has the ability to produce an average of 12 kittens a year. And if those kittens - and so on - are not spayed/ castrated, there will be a staggering 40,000 extra cats in just six years, starting from one female!

It’s a fact that too many kittens (and puppies) are produced every year in Tenerife, and there just aren’t enough potential owners to go around. The obvious conclusion is that fewer need to be born. Letting your cat have a litter of kittens may seem like a fun thing to do. Some even believe that it helps their female cat, in some way, to develop more completely or become a better pet. Neither is true. Becoming pregnant and having a litter of kittens in no way alters the maturity level of the cat, either physically or mentally. In most cases, people discover that it’s hard to find good homes for

one socialised and free of heart-worm to give them the best possible start for their new life. Donations are very much welcomed towards these costs, but

infections, can take all the fun out of the experience. And most people end up wishing they’d never allowed their female to have a litter. So what are the dangers to your cat of getting pregnant? During the heat cycle, there are numerous problems of behaviour which may develop. Females in heat will actively search out male cats and may attempt to escape from the home or garden, putting them in the danger of traffic, fights with other animals, etc. The 2am howling will affect your behaviour, as well as that of your cat! In addition, unspayed females may spray urine when they are in heat, and that’s never going to smell nice in your home! Mammary cancer is the third-most-common cancer in cats, and reproductive hormones are one of the primary causes. But spayed cats have a 40-60% lower risk than those who have not been treated. Unspayed cats can also develop a severe uterine disease. With this disorder, bacteria enters the uterus, which becomes filled with pus. Unde-

tected, this condition is almost always fatal. As you can see, there are many reasons to spay your female cat. Not only does it eliminate many medical and behavioural problems, but it probably adds years to their lives - or at least provides them with a more comfortable, less stressful life. But what are the options? There are birthcontrol pills for cats, but they can have serious, unwanted side-effects and cannot be used for long periods. As a practical, permanent form of sterilisation, we are left with the surgical procedure of spaying. Not only does this prevent the animal from getting pregnant, but it also eliminates the heat cycles. The surgery removes the source of production of the hormones responsible for the heat cycles which play a major role during pregnancy. In humans, great efforts are undertaken to maintain or restore hormone production in the body if the ovaries are removed, but this is not true of cats. These hormones are

This means she will ovulate, or release the eggs from her ovaries, only if she is mated. Martin REALLY IS IN THE PINK NOW SUNDAY’S fund-raiser for Martin (Pinkie), the 11-year-old Labrador whose owner buried him alive after trying his damnest to kill him, raised an incredible 5,038 euros. The exceptional event was held in the Market Tavern at Paloma Beach, Los Cristianos, and, as well as the public’s tremendous support, entertainers were virtually queuing up to offer their services free, while others mucked in to ensure its success. Justin Quinn, who organised all the entertainers, also shared the compering with Paul White. A big thanks to them, and to all the brilliant entertainers who appeared. Dee Sharples-Fixter and Billy Porter had their own fund-raiser for Pinkie at the Los Cristianos Corner Bar, bringing to the event the 176 euros they

raised. Staff at Harveys Bar, also in Los Cristianos, had a collection between them, and donated loads of bottles of alcohol and raffle prizes as well. Mel Falkner, the singe r- c u m - h a i r d r e s s e r, donated the 170 euros she received for 17 haircuts, while Luke Havry performed his first auction brilliantly- and there was no stopping him! tles of branded alcohol. The raffle prizes were also fantastic, with so many quality items. The heftiest donation came from Elaine Bishop Rose and Andrew, who both had their heads shaved in the bar that night and collected a hair-raising 2,000 euros. Everyone around bought raffle tickets, including passers-by who were aware of the event. And lots of people donated cash after reading about Pinkie’s plight in last week’s Canarian Weekly. Such was the demand for seats that the Indian restaurant next door opened the dividing doors and let people use their tables and chairs. And crowds lined the street outside the row of bars.

The event, raising money for Pinkie’s veterinary care - now and in the future - was orchestrated by Sharon Leighton, from Cats Welfare, local vet Yaiza Perez, who has nursed the dog daily in her clinic and at home since his discovery, and Suzanne Hinchliffe. And they thank every single person who contributed to an astonishing day, especially the industrious Market Bar staff, who were run off their feet for many hours, and Joe and Stuart for allowing them to stage the event there. Church’s Free Alpha Course TENERIFE Family Church invites you to attend the The Alpha Course, a series of inter-action sessions that freely explore the basics of Christian faith. There’s no pressure, no follow-up – and no charge!

Television presenter Bear Grylls, says: “I believe the Alpha Course touches lives. I have seen so many people find a personal relationship with God, and a quiet strength in their life after doing the course - me included - and it takes a proud man to say he never needs any help.” What is Alpha? Alpha gives everyone the opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, informal environment. We hear a short talk about an aspect of the Christian faith, and then have an opportunity to share thoughts. During the discussion, everyone is welcome to contribute his/her opinions and no question is off-limits .We explore questions such as: “Is there a God?” “Why am I here?” “Where did I come from?” “Where am I going?” The course runs for eight weeks, usually

on a weekday evening, and features a one-off, not-to-be-missed “away day” on a Saturday towards the end of the course. Who is Alpha for? Alpha is for anyone. People attend from a variety of backgrounds, religions, and viewpoints. They come to investigate questions about the existence of God, and the meaning of life. Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that really changes life. Some might just be curious! Many guests have never been to church, while others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Everyone is welcome. How much will it cost? The course is totally free! When is it? The next Alpha Course starts next Sunday (24th January) from 4-5.30pm. Where is it being held? Winter Gardens, Golf del Sur, at the Rendezvous Function Room. Introductory meeting at 4pm next Sunday. Any more questions? Sabores shock sorry Hammers WE had a break in the Direct Telecom League this week with the second round of the cup and the first round of the plate, both sponsored by Tenerife Pool Tables. It was a night in which the pool quality shone through… and we had a massive giant-killing from Sabores, who are bottom of Division 2. They have played 20 matches, drawing just one game and losing the rest, which has been a harsh start to life for them in the Direct Telecom Pool League. But as I wrote last week, the Cup - or in this case the Plate - is a huge leveller. Sabores have been slowly improving and faced a Tenerife Hammers C, who are bottom of Division 1. The home team started well and, as they put frames on the board, the confidence started spreading through the team. The Hammers were having one of those nights, with only Bobby Baker keeping the tide at bay. Sabores kept their noses in front and, when they secured their seventh and winning frame, the cheer could be heard along the whole south coast. In fact, as we go to print, they are still celebrating! It was a stun-

ning success and now, they will aiming for their first league win on Tuesday. As for Hammers C... There was nearly an upset in the TPT Cup as well in the clash between Tenerife Hammers A and Division 2 Rewind Rewired, who have only just joined the league after coming over from the dark side. But they gave an excellent account of themselves as they won the first three frames. This woke the Hammers up and they went through the gears to take the next five frames, only for the visitors to hit back with the next two to leave the tie at 5-5. The shock was still on and the atmosphere was tense. Del Boy was up and took a vital frame for the Hammers. However in the 12th frame Roger looked like making it a sudden-death finish as he got down to the black. Fritzel has been in fine form for a few weeks but still had five reds on the table. Deftly, he worked his way through the balls and slammed home the black to steal the frame and the tie. It was a ballsy break. There was another superb game also unfolding in the Palms, as Palms A took on Terrace Bantams in what was a

proper cup-tie. It was a strange game as early frames were traded, by mistakes or misfortune. There were two in-offs and, just when one side had bad luck, they were instantly given the rub of the green. But the sporting gods did a good job of levelling matters, and it came as no surprise that, come the last frame, it was still tight. Bantams led 6-5 and it was Adi against Darren from the Palms. Both players got down to the black, but Adi rattled a tricky shot, left it over the bag and Darren lapped up the scraps. So it was Chris, who had already won three frames for the Palms, against Bantams’ Marky P in the decider. Chris already had the edge after beating his opponent earlier in the night with a clearance from the break, and Marky P looked nervy. And when he missed a straight-forward safety shot, Chris made no mistake in clearing up to put the Palms into the last eight. Rewind A against Dreamers was another good match, the visitors making the early running and moving into the lead after the first session. But Rewind fought

back to take the next four games to move into a lead. The final session was shared, which meant Rewind A went through with a hat-tip to Rewind captain John, who had two seven-ball clearances. There was a derby game down in Los Abrigos between Phoenix Potters and The Phoenix, with bragging rights at stake. And they went to The Phoenix. As had been a theme of the night, it was close and edgy. The Phoenix have been showing better form recently and just had enough in the tank to sneak home 7-5. They could be the Cup dark horses. Exiles A were away to Terrace Roosters and it was another incredibly tight game. Again, though, the visitors just managed to edge the last frame to claim victory. Bluebell A put up tough resistance against holders Gaffers A. They hoped home advantage would help, and it did early on as they shared the first set. Unfortunately for them, Gaffers found their eye and moved comfortably into the next round. Palms B made the trip to Valle San Lorenzo to face Division Two lead-

ers, Crown B. There was to be no upset in this game, though, as Palms B gave them a taste of what life in Division 1 may be like next season, and the 9-3 scoreline was about right. Picasso’s A, also going well in the second tier, looked forward to pitting their wits against Treehouse A. But it just didn’t go to plan for Fran and her team. They got a short sharp spank and ended up with just the one frame. Or, as one bookie put it, Treehouse 11 Picasso’s Paul. Cruel, cruel! In the Plate, Sabores aside, the ties went to form. Bluebell B had no problems in seeing off Dreamers B in the Los Cristianos derby. Ten-

erife Pool Tables, the sponsors, had a home tie against Hoppys B but carried on their good form of late and booked their place comfortably in round two. Gaffers B were keen to avoid a shock at Splash Bar, who are one of the league’ in-form teams. But Splash Bar were without captain Craig, apparently still hungover after his recent birthday celebrations, and the leaderless team struggled. Gaffers B used home advantage and soon settled into a rhythm the visitors just couldn’t break. Frame after frame was racked up and they were unlucky not to pull off the whitewash. But 11-1 still smarts!

Debra hits the heights IT has been a while since we’ve seen a full midweek fixtures’ programme, but this week we were spoilt with all Premier League teams in action - and there were some great results and plenty of goals scored. However, in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League, it was a low point-scoring week because, mainly, the unfancied players got themselves on the scoresheet. One or two of the struggling teams had wins this week and, for the

first time in a while, managed to get players into the point-scoring team of the week. Sunderland, who scored a great win against Swansea, contributed two, and Leicester matched this with a late goal against Spurs. The rest came from Everton, Aston Villa, Southampton, Liverpool, Stoke, Man Utd and West Ham. Best player of the week was Wayne Rooney, with 16 points. With no high scores recorded, the top four stayed exactly as it was,

although the gap between first and second has been cut by a couple of points. Neil’s Gooners, managed by Neil Lobban, currently lead the way on 1,195 points. Frank Devaney’s Baines On Toast are second, on 1,191 points, and Trevor Passingham’s Passo Utd are still third with 1,178 points. It looks as though it will be a fight between these three for the title as nobody else seems to be making any ground. But what a good result for Debbie’s Boys, man-

aged by Debra Lamon, who secured this week’s top spot. It’s pleasing to see a woman outperforming what is predominantly a male competition, so well done Debra. One of the top teams this week was Macaroni’s Hammers, picked by Tony Smith. They came in with 53 points, largely assisted by his captain, Dimitri Payet, scoring 22 points, which was 13 more than his next best player. And after the week Tony has had at the pool table, this was a lit-

tle glimmer of joy! So, on to the weekend and another round of fixtures. Let’s hope the

strikers are back on form, and don’t forget your extra point-scoring options.

It’s nitty-gritty time! FOR a number of weeks, the Division 1 titlechasers have been counting down the days until they play each other ... and we have now reached that point!

Phoenix Bar will entertain Boothen Army in Los Abrigos tonight (Friday) in what is sure to be a tense, cagey match. Phoenix will be looking to avenge an earlier defeat by Boothen, while their visitors will be battling to close the 16-point gap, despite their game in hand. It could be too close to call come the end of the campaign, but what we do know is that the mince-pie affect didn’t stop Phoenix getting straight back in their stride during last Friday’s home encounter with the Playboys. They lost just one leg, with Bubbles and Mitch firing in maximums as they cruised to an 8-0 win. Matt struck his fifth 180 as

Gaffers put six past Palms Pool Bar, while Hoppys held the trebles leg to edge out Waterfall. Pas O Nadas A won the mid-table derby by taking five points from Exiles, and Emerald Shamrocks clinched the San Blas derby at Bar 180 B. Just round the corner, at Emerald Lounge, Palms Sports Bars skipper Emma, was delighted with the 5-3 victory - complete with maximums from Ken and Heineken – which were the first from any of her players this season. You wait all day for a bus, then two come at once, said she! The end-of-season drama isn’t just confined to Division 1, because things will become much clearer in Division 2 over the next fortnight as Phoenix Flights and Sandys Chippers face up in back-to-back fixtures, starting at Sandys tonight. A heavy defeat for Flights could open the door for Sandys or, indeed, Spear Chuckers. But with a hefty 20-point cushion and an unbeaten record,

only a numpty would wager on that happening. Has anyone seen my betting slips? Marilyns, however, did give Phoenix Flights a real test in last week’s round of matches, so much so that they had to win the trebles for a 5-3 success. Spear Chuckers

claimed a six-point haul at Clouseaus, with Graham hitting his first 180 for the Valle San Lorenzo outfit, while Summerlands’ whitewashing of Bar Leones included a 122 bull check-out for Adam. Picassos, entertaining Sandys Chippers,

By Roscoe I HAVE never seen football played in a swimming pool. Last weekend was rather close, as anyone who witnessed this spectacle will testify.

Nearly 4,000 souls got drenched as they watched a match that 99% of the refs would have cancelled. I’m guessing Jorge

Figueroa didn’t fancy the long drive home without having blown his whistle. It was a farcical game. Not that Tenerife will mind a jot. In fact, it was a smart goal that decided it. In a totally forgettable affair, Nano’s late strike was a peach. And it was a big win. In a crowded league, Tenerife were able to put a bit of distance between themselves at the bottom, and also inch closer to the play-offs.

With most sides cutting each others throats, a

few wins can send you rocketing up the league.

Alaves are putting a juicy run together, while Jose Luis Oltra’s Cordoba are wonderfully consistent. Alcorcon won again, as did Real Oviedo, who are set to splash the cash. Tenerife have a good run of fixtures, starting tomorrow (Saturday). Athletic Bilbao’s B team pitch up and they are there for the taking. They have just one win since mid-September and have not won on the road, so to speak.

The kids are all right and they work hard, but that takes you only so far in this league. They are a tight unit and only Real Oviedo and Mirands have given them a spanking. Their midfield has a few good prospects. Keep an eye on Unai Lopez, Gorka Iturraspe and Iker Indabarrena. Also young defender Markel Exteberria, who is a good prospect … and brilliant at Scrabble!

Defoe could hold the key

AFTER the FA Cup excitement, we have a welcome return to league action. We are just over the season’s halfway stage, and still nobody is pulling away. It really is one of those seasons where a few teams will still fancy this is their year. It’s getting tight at the bottom, and there is nothing between sides at the top.

Tottenham v Sunderland

of months and are in real danger of being dragged back even further. They have the players and now need the confidence. West Brom are just above their opponents and know a win can open up a bigger gap. We know they like to keep it tight at the back, but they have become a little less adventurous going forward. They need the Berahino problem solved to allow them to invest in the squad and move forward. Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-0

Spurs have been enjoying a busy festive season … well, until Wednesday night! They have played well, taking the opportunity to move into the top four. They have the best defence in the league currently, and they are also having plenty of luck in front of goal. A good run of wins now and a Champions League spot is theirs for the taking. Sunderland will be bouncing after their win at Swansea. Jermain Defoe, a player for whom Manchester United are screaming, is on fire and he will relish this return to White Hart Lane. Big Sam will park the bus and hope Defoe nicks it. Prediction: Home win Last season: 2-1

Aston Villa v Leicester

Chelsea v Everton

Since Mourinho went, Chelsea have looked a better side. But they are still in the wrong half of the table. The top six has to be their goal, but if the teams above them continue to take points as they have been doing, it will be a big ask. Rumours are rife that they are chasing a couple of big names, but do they want to come? Everton keep showing signs of brilliance, but then Martinez makes changes and they revert to looking average. They have a good core of young players, but the manager seems to be holding them back. They really should be in the top half of the table. Prediction: Draw Last season: 1-0

relegation zone. That said, they have done some early transfer business and bolstered up their attack. Home games are always key to staying up, so they must ensure points from fixtures like this one. Norwich, quietly going about their business, will feel happy at being six points above the drop-zone. But they still require another 17 points to hit the magical 40-point total which normally guarantees survival. Games against their rivals must be won, and a win here will certainly help. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A

Bournemouth v Norwich

Man City v Crystal Palace

Bournemouth have been doing okay in recent games but are still in and around the

City have dropped points of late and find themselves third only in the table, coming

into the second half of the season. They have the squad capable of taking the crown, but more consistency is required. They need Kompany back in the heart of defence to steady things there, and Aguero back among the goals. Palace are in the mix for a Europa League place and will look to add to their points tally against City. They have a decent squad but have struggled for goals in recent games. Maybe an addition will come in the transfer window to rectify this. Prediction: Draw Last season: 3-0

Newcastle v West Ham

Newcastle are spending money again in this transfer window, but Steve McClaren is constantly complaining about their bad luck.

He really needs to prove himself as a coach over the next few games or the Magpies will end up in a relegation fight - they’re in the bottom three, two points from safety. West Ham will be happy with their season so far as they sit comfortably in sixth place. A solid win in their last league game against Liverpool will have been a real confident boost, and they must fancy their chances against struggling opponents. Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-0

Southampton v West Brom

Ronald Koeman has decided to put contract talks on hold until the summer. But unless he sorts out Southampton’s poor form, I am not sure he will still be there. They have gone backwards over the last couple

Villa are supposed to be giving Remi Garde funds to buy players but they look too far behind to stay up. So does he buy players to get them straight back up, or does he really think he can pull off a miracle? A loss here is another nail in the coffin, but a win could ignite a fightback. Leicester continue to look good, maintaining second spot after a busy period. The way they are playing, they must be genuine title contenders and they have done their January business early, allowing themselves to concentrate on the job in hand. This should be a straight-forward win for them - and three more points! Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-1

Liverpool v Man Utd

It has been a tough few weeks for Liverpool because lots of games in the league and cup have led to a huge injury list. They have been recalling their own players from loan, and even had everybody scratching heads as they bought Steven Caulker in on loan! This is going to be a tough game for them.

Man Utd are still being berated by their fans for a boring playing style, and you can understand that because, as a fan, you want to be entertained. It has got to the point where the fans are making the players nervous, and this may be contributing to the way they play. A win against the old enemy may change things, though. Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-2

Stoke v Arsenal

Stoke boss Mark Hughes seems to be keeping the team on a leash at times, but they will be chomping at the bit for this match. They have been brilliant all season against the big boys and, though Arsenal are sitting pretty at the top of the table they will be in for a real row. Liverpool’s late goal cost them 2 crucial points on Wednesday and they need a win here to send a message. Prediction: Away win Last season: 3-2

Swansea V Watford

Swansea are drifting backwards since firing Garry Monk and have admitted that they had no plans in place when they got rid of him. This is now costing them and if results go against them they could slip into the bottom three. They have some good players at the club who now need to step up to the plate. Watford have really found their feet in the Premier League and its thanks to the form of Deeney and Ighalo who are scoring goals for fun. They are strong at home but their away form has been a little patchy but they should have no problems against a low on confidence Swansea side. Prediction: Away Win Last Season: N/A
