‘Van man’ set for long stretch FORMER Tenerife resident Andrew Logan, known locally as Andy Van Man, was this week found guilty on seven counts of sexual activity involving a girl under the age of 13.

The well-known man was arrested in Tenerife in May 2015 and flown by police to Madrid to answer an extradition warrant issued by the UK authorities.

After a swift hearing, he was transferred into the custody of British police officers and, on 30th June was charged with four counts of sex-

ual assault of a female child under 13.

He was also charged with two counts of cause/incite a female child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and one count of engaging in a sexual activity in the presence of a child aged under 13.

The trial began on 12th January and, after le-

gal arguments, the jury was sworn in the following day. There were two days of witness testimonies before closing arguments.

The jury retired to consider its verdict on Monday, and the following morning they found Logan guilty on all counts.

Guilty ‘van man’ is heading for jail Continued from front. committed in the UK. The 44-year-old, formerly of Clayton-leMoors, near Accrington in Lancashire, had pleaded not guilty to all the charges, which happened over a decade ago.

Detective Inspector Julie Cross said after the trial: “He was arrested in Tenerife in May last year and then taken to Madrid and charged with numerous offences and, following the trial, has been convicted of all of them.

“Unfortunately, they were only reported to us in 2009 and it’s taken a long time to reach the point where he could be brought back into the country.”

She added: “The victim had to give her account and evidence of the attacks, which isn’t the best thing, and she did extremely well.

“Hopefully she will now be able to get some closure as a result of the verdicts, and Logan will get a custodial sentence that merits the awful offences he committed.”

The fact that these convictions related to crimes from over 10 years ago has shocked many residents in Tenerife. And there are still many unanswered questions.

If the police knew of Logan’s crimes back in 2009, why did it take so long for him to be ar-

rested and extradited?

It is understood that Logan visited the UK after 2009 so, again, why no arrest?

Also, if police were aware that he was abroad, or suspected he was living in Tenerife, why didn’t they alert the community here?

Logan was a very visible character.

His “man-with-a-van” style business was popular and he was, it seems, well-liked, in the community.

This has simply made

the outcome of the court proceedings all the more unpalatable to many here in the South of Tenerife.

The Canarian Weekly has received many messages and online posts since the guilty verdict was revealed.

One said: “Andy was a good friend and was there for me when I spilt from my ex-husband. Last year, when I heard the news, it made me feel sick because when I lived in the UK, I was an emergency foster mum.

“I looked after children who had been abused. It can take years for a child to learn to live with what happened to them, and they are the lucky ones.

I hope he can live with what he has done.”

Another said: “Years ago, we were neighbours, acquaintances, and my children spent a lot of time at his house as they were good friends with his step-children.

“The last time I saw him was almost exactly a year ago ,as we sat and had a coffee in my kitchen. I had no idea what he stood accused of until recently.

“His victims have remained stoic and composed, and while we all put our energy into de-

spising him, naturally, let’s give some thought to the damage he left behind and wish well those people he very nearly destroyed.

“I know they have now found the peace and the relief they deserve, and I wish them all the very best on their journey moving forward.”

Controversially, Logan was released on bail under strict conditions. He is forbidden to make any contact with the victim’s family, he is not allowed to leave the country - and his passport has been confiscated!

Logan must also sign a register at a police station every day until sentencing at Preston Crown Court, on 26th February.

The President of the Canary Islands, heads of the Cabildos, mayors, tourism ministers, hotel owners, flight directors, airport bosses and travel agents have all been making our presence felt.

New deals have been done with tour operators, holiday companies and airports as the Canaries look to built on a record-breaking 2015.

There have also been awards for some of Tenerife’s finest. Here, we look at some of the highlights from this week.

Canaries President Fernando Clavijo has been in fine form at FITUR, and he has every right to have a broad smile on his face!

He revealed at a press event that the Islands have had a record year, and that 2016 will be even better.

Clavijo said there would be an increase in visitors to the islands, after a record 13.2mplus tourists were registered in 2015 - “Purely positive data for the tourism sector.” he added.

Clavijo, who led a large delegation, with all members of the Canarian Government and several mayors in attendance highlighted in a speech the “strength of the Islands as a world power in tourism”.

He told his audience that 13.2 million tourists visited the Canary Islands in 2015, and that all projections indicated an increase this year.

“We managed to be a reference tourist destination in Europe for quality,” he said. “The tourism sector has generated more than 15bn euros, and employment growth has been about

The consolidation of the Spanish market’s financial recovery saw Tenerife close 2015 with a 4.8% increase to a total of 1,210,593 domestic tourists. And Alonso believes the high standard of the holiday experience is making a mark.

Domestic tourism has been slowly improving over the last four years, but only in 2015 did it get back to the 20062008 levels.

Carlos Alonso revealed that the Cabildo has worked hard in recent years to restore the domestic numbers, saying: “The intense efforts, particularly with the new deals at Tenerife North airport, have worked.

“We have attracted new routes from companies such as Vueling, Iberia and Norwegian, and we’ve also increased air capacity and

frequencies with both the Peninsula from Los Rodeos and from Tenerife South.”

Last year, an impressive 44 new routes to Tenerife were created from different national and international airports.

Tenerife is leading the other Islands in receiving passengers from Spanish airports, with a 36.8% share, ahead of Gran Canaria (33.1%) and Lanzarote (13.9%).

Tenerife Cabildo’s delegation at Fitur includes 150 delgates associated with Turismo de Tenerife, who have been busy all week holding meetings with major tour operators, airlines, travel agents and booking portals, such as Viajes El Corte Ingles, Travelplan, Logitravel, Air Europa, Vueling, Norwegian, Iberia Express, Air Berlin and Bearing.

Sister companies Loro Parque, Siam Park and the Botanic Hotel have presented their new products at FITUR. Loro Parque unveiled details of the aquarium Poema del Mar at the 36th edition of FITUR. This ambitious project is scheduled for launch in 2017.

The Parque also showcased the new attraction of two red pandas, who joined the park in Autumn.

Siam Park presented the amazing Singha, the award-winning attraction which opened last summer. Singha, a pioneering watercoaster which ensures unprecedented adrenaline rush, was awarded the Best New Attraction Aquatic 2015 gong by IAAPA. The Botanical Hotel unveiled its new treatments and Ayurveda massages line, as well as yoga classes customised for each client.

As for its gastronomic innovations, the a la carte Oriental restaurant, has a new menu with spices imported from Thailand.

Canarians may have originated in Africa CALIFORNIA’S Stanford University scientists are examining genetic material preserved in Canarian mummies to try to rebuild the genome - an organism’s complete set of DNA - of the old Canaries.

They want to know where the first people who arrived in the islands came from. And genetic studies have already uncovered evidence of the existence of a North African trace in the current Canaries’ population.

The trail confirms what other studies based on archaeology, anthropology, philology and analysis of historical chronicles have already stated.

But Stanford researcher Rosa Fregel says there are specific markers, suggesting this genetic trail relates to former Canarians, with the Sahara populations’ both mitochondrial DNA (reflecting the heritage of the individual matriline - all-female lineage) and in the Y chromosome (linking to the lineage of relatives from the father).

“We want to apply the study of the origins of the old Canarians with the new genetic techniques to try to figure out their entire DNA.” The Canarian Museum, and other institutions housing the main findings provided by pre-Hispanic sites in the Archipelago, have mummies and other human remains from the era likely to retain Aboriginal DNA. Fregel stresses that current techniques have unravelled the genome of ancient populations, but especially on remains found in cold areas such as Siberia.

There, permanently-

frozen soils have preserved the genetic material from the fossil, which remains in top condition.

Obviously, the Canary Islands has a much warmer climate, so you’d imagine that conservation of DNA from mummies and other human remains wouldn’t so good.

But if the entire DNA of a particular individual does not recover properly, Fregel and her fellow researchers believe they could possibly reconstruct, like a puzzle, the genetic map of populations from different fragments of various human radicals during pre-Hispanic times.

SPANISH police detained four people after a fellow Brit was allegedly stabbed to death with a broken bottle in a bar near Alicante.

The attack happened in the early hours of Saturday in Villamartin Plaza, an area popular with expats in the Orihuela Costa resort.

The victim received several cuts to the neck and chest during a fight at around 2am, following a row which started in a sports bar frequented by British expats. A 39-year-old woman and two men, aged 43 and 26, are among the suspects.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: ”We can confirm the death of a British national in Alicante on 16th January.

We are in contact with the local authorities and stand ready to provide

consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.

“We can also confirm the detention of four British Nationals in Alicante on 16th January.

We stand ready to offer consular assistance.”

One restaurant owner said: “I am a little bit afraid and angry. It is scary, it is foolish and I do not like that. I have been here for three years and we have never had trouble - it is a nice place.”

And a woman working locally described the bar as “like any other” occasionally seeing fights, but otherwise normal.

She added: “Sometimes there are fights, but some people when they drink they cannot control themselves.”

Other working in the areas said the incident had left them frightened.

Dreadlocks and tracksuits for a new-look Parliament SOME new members of Congress introduced a younger, scruffier appearance into parliament, even as negotiations continued to form a new Spanish Government.

One new member’s dreadlocks came under particular scrutiny as new MPs filed into Spain’s lower chamber, following last month’s General Election stalemate.

Alberto Rodríguez, from anti-austerity party Podemos, was pictured walking past concerned-looking Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, sporting long dreadlocks and a casual sweater.

Rodríguez delivered a personal message during his swearing-in ceremony, saying: “Even though it annoys some people that we are here and they disrespect us, I promise to abide by the Constitution and work to change it.”

The 34-year-old provoked jeers and boos from other party benches, and Celia Villalobos, from Rajoy’s conservative Popular Party (PP) said later: “I don’t care if they have

dreadlocks. But I want them clean, so they don’t give me lice.”

It triggered a social media backlash. “I wish Celia Villalobos’ party was half as clean as my rastas,” tweeted Miguel Ardanuy, a Podemos member of Madrid’s regional assembly, which has been shared thousands of times.

Ernesto Llebry, an electrician from Rodríguez’s native Tenerife, said he was the only politician to attend a recent charity event to help poor families in Santa Cruz, the Island’s capital.

“Many other wellgroomed and suitwearing politicians were invited to the event, but guess what?

This lad Alberto Rodríguez, with his rastas and tracksuit, turned

up with toys, food and clothing when the rest didn’t,” said Mr Llebry.

Rodríguez, one of 69 Podemos representatives in the 350-strong Congress, said Villalobos’ comments showed a “lack of respect”, but he stressed that his focus was on reducing levels of poverty among his countrymen.

The December election left Rajoy’s PP as the biggest party in Congress, but without the necessary support to command a majority, while newcomers Podemos and centreright Ciudadanos figured strongly.

On Monday, King Felipe began a week-long series of interviews with party leaders before deciding who to propose as the next Government leader.

Adeje Mayor adds weight to therapy unit campaign

Balcony-fall Briton dies A BRITISH holiday-maker fell to his death from a Costa Adeje tourist complex in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday).

The 43-year-old, named only as GR, was pronounced dead at the scene soon after 3am.

Police said he had fallen from an El Duque Aparthotel balcony, near the Plaza del Duque shopping centre.

A spokesman said: “The incident is still under investigation. The man, who was British, was alone when it happened.”

The local emergency services’ spokesman, confirming the incident, said: “A British national

ADEJE Council has added its voice to that of the Occupational Therapy Association in calling for the Canarian Health Service to open a therapy unit here in the South.

It makes sense because the people most affected by ailments attended to by the unit come from Adeje, Arona and Granadilla.

Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, along with Health Promotion Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, last week discussed the situation with Diego Moguel, President of the Canarian Occupational Therapy Association.

The only unit now is based in Candelaria Hospital, in the North, where, inexplicably, there have been cuts to the number of staff serving this essential unit.

It treats a particular range of individuals: premature babies, and those with illnesses categorised as “rare” as well as older people suffering a variety of disorders.

Diego Moguel said: “This is a particular vul-

nerable sector of the population who, at the moment, have to travel hundreds of kilometres for treatment each week.

“But if there were a unit in the South, it would improve their quality of life dramatically. It is essential that a unit is opened here to bring this service closer to those who need it.

“In particular, we are talking about children who, in many cases, suffer a lot during the long journey to and from the unit, given the kind of illness they might be suffering from, as well as make huge demands on their families.”

According to the statistics Arona, followed

by Adeje and Granadilla, are the boroughs with the highest ratio of patients attending the unit in Candelaria Hospital.

Adeje’s Mayor, once

made aware of the current circumstances, added his and the Council’s voice to the call and said he would bring the issue to the next Council meeting.

“Anything that affects the health of our residents is, for us, a priority, and we will do anything we can in this regard,” said Rodríguez Fraga. “And particularly as we are talking about a very vulnerable section of the population.

We will support the motion calling for this service to be available here.

“It should be open to the public as soon as possible, and we will look for support from the other boroughs and the Cabildo.”

The Mayor added: “I hope all the southern councils will join us in the campaign, particularly as our boroughs have the highest num-

bers in need of this unit.”

During the meeting, the Mayor met an Arona family directly affected by the lack of a unit here.Their son suffers from Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) - or “butterfly skin”, as it is commonly known, because the skin so delicate that it tears and bruises at the slightest touch.

The condition is incurable, and the child receives treatment at the Candelaria unit, even though the long drive actually makes his condition worse at times, says his mother.

The unit’s work is based on intervention to meet the needs of all patients, and help them achieve their maximum capacity, according to their condition, be it physical, mental, cognitive, etc, through workshops and treatments.

A curious case of the sick building

Juan Jose Martinez, has commissioned the University of La Laguna to study the building’s radioactive radon levels - gas that occurs

naturally, typically in granitic existing soils.

A series of devices will then be installed to measure those levels.

In addition to this

study, Santa Cruz Local Police also deem it necessary to make an in-depth diagnosis of the property’s condition to determine what construction materials were used to determine whether there is a relationship between the building itself and the cancer cases among workers.

Reading between the lines they fear an Asbestos problem.

The Local Police HQ was built in the Seventies and is one of the oldest buildings still in use by city employees.

It was a barn, initially, and so many of its departments do not have

ventilation, which worsens the situation.

The unions of the local police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have been concerned because they suspect that there is a direct relationship between the cancer cases that have occurred and the state of the building. “Very recently, on December 23, one of our partners died of cancer, an agent of 52 years. He worked in the property file. The cases that have been detected are of people who spend many hours in that property,” says the steward of the CSI-F, Jesus Illada.

The unions say that under the Avenida Tres de Mayo there are volcanic tubes emanating gases that may be “causing a lot of damage among workers”.

Therefore, they are asking the City Council of Santa Cruz to conduct all studies and all property assessments necessary. “We have to rule out all possibilities. This is a serious issue that can not be missed. We know that the councilman of Human Resources is also concerned and is doing everything that is in their hands,” said Illada.

PHEW - IT’S TIME FOR A BREATHER THIS has been a busier-than-usual week, and almost every hour has brought another news story.

Our Front-Page story is one that will sicken a lot of people, and lead to a lot of head-shaking.

The comments on our Facebook page and website have reflected the anger in the community. The UK Government needs to look at ways of alerting British communities overseas when the authorities are hunting criminals.

It seems those authorities actually had an idea of Logan’s whereabouts. A heads-up, when you consider the charges, was not too much to ask.

On a happier note, it seems that everything is going well at FITUR, as you will have read on Page 4. This is such an important event for our Islands, and I’m delighted with the way everyone has responded.

Tenerife is positively booming and, as Canarian President Fernando Clavijo pointed out in his speech, it will only get better in 2016. The travel heads are doing

a stunning job, and long may that continue.

Finally, with everything going on, you need a bit of down-time, and I’m so looking forward to the Eric Bristow Golf Challenge at Los Palos next Friday (29th January).

It’s a different event from the many golf days we have here, which makes it so special. Last year the event raised a lot of money, and I’m sure we will again for the Lions, who do such amazing work.

Experts say it will have an extremely uneven effect on autonomous communities because, on the one hand, the differences in income between them (the reduction is higher among lower-income earners) and secondly, in turn, to tax changes also introduced by regional governments.

Let us explain. In Castilla-La Mancha, the income tax reduction compared with 2011 will be 8%, while in Cataluña, this barely reaches 1% (0.9%). And yes, it is being seen as another reason for independence.

In the Canary Islands, the reduction will be 5.2% according to a study by the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IEF).

In 2014, Mariano Rajoy’s Government ap-

proved a reduction of income tax to be applied in two years: the first part to take effect in 2015 and the second in 2016.

Thus, the average tax rebate in 2016 for the whole of Spain, regarding what they paid in tax in 2011, is 3.74%.

As it is deeper for low incomes, in Castilla-La Mancha the average reduction will amount to 8%, the biggest decline among all communities, with Cataluña the lowest.

The IEF study states that although the reform has increased the

progressiveness of the tax and, therefore, the reduction of income tax is proportionally higher in regions with lower per capita income, it has also been influenced by tax changes approved by their own regional governments.

Some are saying the local taxes are being raised purposely, then blamed on the national government. And some regions are passing on the savings, while others are using it to increase taxes.

The tiny reduction in Cataluña is, therefore,

down to a combination of two factors: their income per capita is above average and, at the same time, the regional government has raised the tax on the regional quota.

In fact, the collection of regional tax in Cataluña is 8.6% higher in 2016 than the state share, and they will raise 645 million euros.

As for the other autonomous communities, 10 of them will enjoy a higher reduction of income tax in 2016 than the national average (-3.74%).

The communities are Andalucía (-6.6%), Asturias (-4.6%), Canarias (-5.2%), Cantabria (-5.4%), Castilla y León (-6.8%), Castilla-La Mancha (-8%), Extremadura (-5 5%), Galicia (-4.8%), Murcia (-6%) and La Rioja (-3.8%).

The provincial communities of Basque Country and Navarra, which has its own tax system, and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, are not included in the study.

Spain donors hit peak SPAIN, which has led the way for organ donation and transplantation for 24 years, has again beaten its own remarkable record.

It has posted its highest-ever increase in the number of donors in the history of the Spanish National Transplant Organisation (ONT), raising the figure to 39.7 donors per million population and a total of 4,769 transplant recipients in 2015.

The figures, released by the ONT, put the number of organ donors at 1,851, an increase of 10% to a new all-time

peak. It means that Spain has widened the gap it has been maintaining with the rest of the world in terms of its organ-donor rate.

The country now stands 20 points above the EU (19.6 donors pmp) and over 13 points above the US (26.6).

Transplants also rose by 9.4% on the previous year. Public generosity and the dedication shown by all the coordination professionals, and the transplant network as a whole, mean that 13 transplants on average were performed daily in Spain last year.

In other words, more than one every two hours!

These figures were

presented by Alfonso Alonso, acting Minister for Health, Social Services and Equality, at a press briefing on the results from ONT activity in 2015.

Alonso, accompanied

by ONT Director Rafael Matesanz, highlighted the “enormous strength of the Spanish transplant system, which has again demonstrated its significant capacity for improvement in the best interests of patients”.

He added: “This capacity for ongoing improvement explains Spain’s global leadership in the field for 24 consecutive years - leadership to which we are committed and which, we hope,

will continue for many years to come.”

The significant activity recorded by the ONT last year peaked on 14th December, when a record for the number of deceased donors within 24 hours was set. Of the total of 16 donors, 15 were deceased.

These donations enabled a total of 38 transplants to be performed in just one day, and 29 hospitals in 11 autonomous regions took part in the various operations.

Six transplant teams were required to relocate by air, requiring assistance from 12 airports. In all, over 600 people were involved in the operations.

EXPLAINING to a 10-year-old just what a martyr is and how a town can adopt one “How many years ago did he die?

Why did they kill him? How can you adopt someone who is dead?

- was my start to this year’s San Sebastián celebrations.

He is one of Adeje’s patron saints, and the event brings residents and tourists out in their thousands, to the La Enramada beach in La Caleta, to watch the horses being brought down to the sea for a swim.

The “horses on the beach” section of the day is only part of a larger celebration, with small folk groups singing, Holy Mass, fireworks the night before - and the launch of a fantastic book about San Sebastián in Adeje through the eyes of some of the borough’s older residents.

But for many, the tradition with horses is the most important bit. And it’s probably one of the occasions when international residents feel very much “Adejeros” because they bring their families to this event year after year.

And they are happy to spend time explaining it to invited guests from abroad, or perhaps tourists who stand beside them on the beach, awaiting the horses’ arrival.

The waiting is hourslong for 10-15 minutes of equine presence, but

that doesn’t really matter. It’s a sunny day, we’re on the beach with friends and family, it’s a local fiesta ... what’s not to like?

And no-one left the scene unhappy. The thousands who arrived - once an elusive parking place had been

found - were happy with the spectacle, the kids loved the ponies and donkeys, who were also part of the four-legged beach parade.

The San Sebastián statue was carried, respectfully, to the water’s edge, homage paid, and returned to his church,

and people wandered home happily, or went back to the plaza to watch the other animals being blessed.

They will have enjoyed a tapas or two with a beer or glass of wine as music played and sun shone.

This year’s celebrations were of particular significance because the borough was celebrating the centenary of the arrival of the statue of San Sebastian, commissioned 100 years ago by parish priest Eulogio Gutiérrez Estéve - and still revered!

Prior to that, the feast day, which is recorded as being in place for up to 300 years, was celebrated using a painting of the martyr.

marked the statue’s 100 years with the publication of a book, filled with personal reflections from the borough’s older residents celebrating the saint, with photographs from the past.

The book is available through Adeje Cultural Centre and is free.

The actual feastday celebrations were spread over two days, with Holy Mass and fireworks on Tuesday in La Caleta, as well as performances by small local folk groups.

On Wednesday, the main Mass was celebrated at midday, followed by the colourful riding of up to 50 sea-bound horses.

The Saint’s image was then carried down to the sea, on his journey to a local spot, La Humilladero, to meet the statue of Our Lady of the Incarnation - and then, his return to the hermitage.

People, as every year, were also invited to bring their pets for a blessing.

With increased security measures in place, public safety was again assured. According to Adeje Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, it all went without a hitch.

He described the event as one with which Adeje people identify, and a celebration still so immensely popular with tourists that many people plan their holidays around this particular date.

Holidays more costly in wake of terrorism THE cost of cheap holidays to Spain and Portugal is set to soar as Britons seek out destinations they believe are safe from ISIS attacks, with Spain, especially Tenerife, and Portugal to the forefront.

People are already feeling the icy, Arctic blasts all over the UK, and temperatures are as low as -15C, so it’s no wonder they are beginning to search for “safe” sunshine online.

After terror atrocities in previous favourite hotspots, including Tunisia and Egypt, Britons are booking breaks in countries with a perceived lower terror threat in the wake of the deadly attacks.

But Turkey and Moroc-

Desperate farmer hacks off hand to fiddle huge pay-out A CRAZY Spanish farmer, who cut off his own hand as part of an elaborate insurance scam - and staged a car crash to make it more realistic - has been jailed for four years.

The 42-year-old was also ordered to repay some 335,000 euros (£253,000) in insurance money.

The provincial court heard how the “desperate man” from Castellon in eastern Spain, was so behind on his mortgage repayments that he decided to stage an extraordinary scam to

cash in on multiple insurance policies.

In the early hours of a December morning in 2007, he took a sharp blade and hacked off his right hand, before wrapping it in a tourniquet to control the bleeding.

He then drove his car, possibly with the help of another person, in the pitch-black to a point where there was a curve in the road, and “crashed” down a ditch next to an orange grove.

The court heard how the farmer then placed his severed hand in the footwell of his car before setting the vehicle alight with petrol he had brought with him.

Having called emergency services, the one-handed farmer was

found by police sitting at the side of the road smoking a cigar.

He claimed at the time he had swerved to avoid an animal in the road before crashing down the embankment. A metal bar had smashed through his windscreen, he said, and sliced his hand clean off.

The incident enabled him collect on some 12 insurance policies with eight companies, to the value of 1.9m euros.

But subsequent investigation by a private detective agency on behalf of the insurance companies led to his arrest and a court appearance.

The Provincial Court of Castellon found him guilty of fraud, and also dished out a 3,000-euro fine.

It is not hard to understand why tourists are shunning their favourite spots this year.

Some 38 holiday-makers were slaughtered as they sunbathed on a beach at the Port El Kantaoui tourist resort near Sousse, Tunisia,

on 26th June last year.

The massacre followed the March attack at the Bardo National Museum, in central Tunis, in which 24 people were killed, including 20 foreign tourists.

It is no wonder the Department of Foreign Affairs still has a travel warning in place for the region.

The Foreign Office is also advising against all non-essential travel to Egypt, with the exception of Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and other Red Sea resorts outside the Sinai peninsula, where travellers are still warned to exercise caution.

There is a “general” warning about terrorism in Morocco’s beaches, bars and hotels, and the same goes for Turkey.

Only last week, an ISIS suicide bomber killed 10 German travellers in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Sorry farewell to Eagle Glenn As I was saying…

A PAIR of Irish grandparents were puzzled when a holiday postcard arrived from Tenerife … more than eight years after it was sent by their daughter.

Breda ‘Bunty’ O’Shea, from Tralee, was relaxing on the Island when sent the card to her parents, Betty and Neilus, but the card was delivered just last week, more than eight years after being dropped into a Spanish post box.

The Kerry’s Eye newspaper said Bunty had

written: “Hello All. Having a great having a ball in Tenerife as ye already know. Weather is beautiful and food and entertainment very good also.”

She signed off by promising she would “be home before the postcard” … and she certainly achieved that pledge!

“I couldn’t stop laughing when I heard about it,” said Bunty. “I just wonder where it was all these years? Was it a delay on their side, or on our side?”

GLENN Frey, the Eagles co-founder and guitarist, has died at the age of 67, from complications arising from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia.

He passed away in New York City on Monday and, said his family and fellow band members on the Eagles website: “Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us.”

The Eagles were one of the most successful Seventies’ bands, with multiple hit singles, including their 1976 Hotel California.

Frey co-founded the Eagles in 1971 with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner.

He co-wrote Hotel California with Henley

and Don Felder, and composed a number of the band’s biggest songs on his own, including Heartache Tonight and Lyin’ Eyes.

The Eagles notched up more than 150 million album sales worldwide, with Hotel California and their greatest hits among the best selling in history.

The Eagles were one of the great music forces in the Seventies. True, they did not have had the dynamics of Led Zeppelin or the drama of Fleetwood Mac, but their soft rock dominated the airwaves - AM radio would play the hits, filled with flawless harmonies, while FM stations would spin the longer, unedited album cuts.

Glenn emerged as one of the band’s chief songwriters, the Lennon to Don Henley’s McCartney. He penned their first major hit,

Take It Easy - a song as laid back as its title suggests - with Jackson Browne. But later singles, including Take It To The Limit, were group efforts.

And while the two front men would share vocal duties, Frey’s supple tones were a perfect counterpoint to Henley’s rasp.

The Eagles scored five No.1 singles and four No.1 albums in the US, and their Greatest Hits album sold 30 million copies.

It boggles the mind somewhat,” Frey told Rolling Stone in 2012.

“But as long as I keep taking out the garbage and cleaning up after the dogs and taking the kids to school, I’ll have perspective.” yet the band’s success took its toll, and Frey used to describe their break-up in two words, Hotel California, explaining that the pres-

In 1980, Henley famously said the Eagles would reform when “hell freezes over”. And 14 years later, that was the title of the band’s comeback album as the old friends made amends.

“He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction,” said Henley in a statement.

“But, the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years the Eagles were dissolved.”

After their acrimonious split in 1980, Frey enjoyed success as a solo artist, most notably with The Heat is On, recorded for the 1984 film Beverly Hills Cop. The band reunited in 1994 and became a hugely-popular touring act.

HBO streams into Spanish

Missing mum’s boyfriend returns to talk with police SIMON Corner, boyfriend of the ex-pat woman who vanished from her Spanish home in November, has returned to Spain so that he can be questioned by police.

The boat-owner has been criticised heavily

by Lisa Brown’s worried family and friends for leaving the country, days after the 33-yearold mother-of-one disappeared.

Mr Corner, the same age as Lisa, sparked suspicion by flying to the Far East following a short police probe after being taken away by investigators from Sotogrande Port, near Gibraltar, while working on his 30ft sailing boat.

He told legal advisers he would return to the Costa del Sol by the end of the week to convince police he is innocent of any wrongdoing, and he’s back.

Corner, from Liverpool, flew into Malaga Airport midweek to be met by a lawyer.

He was expected to meet Guardia Civil officers in the southern port city of Algeciras, who are leading the hunt, to address “unfounded allegations” linking him to Lisa’s disappearance Jason Coghlan, whose multi-national JaCogLaw company is assisting him, confirmed that his client has now contacted police.

“There has been a relentless campaign against our client ever

since his friend, Lisa Brown, broke contact with her friends and family and was declared a missing person,” he said.

“But he assures me he is totally innocent.

And to date, there is no evidence that anything untoward has taken place.”

He added: “The weight of unfounded allegations has taken a considerable toll upon Simon and his friends and family.

“Therefore, though there is no legal obligation for him to demonstrate his innocence, he insists on abandoning his international business activities in the Far East.

“He arrived in Malaga this week, where he was met by his lawyer, and he will endeavour to put a stop, once and for all, to the spurious and unfounded allegations being levelled against him.”

Lisa, from Alexandria, Dunbartonshire, was last seen at her home in Guardia, near Sotogrande, on 4th November.

Her son Marco, eight, has been staying in nearby La Linda with his father, Tony Comptroller, since she vanished.

More than 25,000 wellwishers have already joined a Find Lisa Facebook group, set up last month by her sister, Helen, who still lives in Dumbarton.

Liverpudlian Mr Corner, jailed for three months in Gibraltar in May 2014 for possession of an offensive weapon after a nightclub altercation, issued a state-

ment before Christmas saying he was happy to help police with their inquiries, and that he had “nothing to hide”.

Distraught Helen, 49, told supporters on the Find Lisa page that her New Year’s resolution was to find her sister.

She said: “People make promises that, a few weeks down the line, get forgotten about .“Well I will make one now that I intend to keep, and that is to find out where you are.”

Guardia Civil officers have made no any official comment. But they were seen searching his boat, and told workers in Sotogrande Port shortly after he left the area to call if they spotted him.

A Guardia Civil spokesman said: “Our investigation into Lisa Brown’s disappearance remains open and all avenues are being explored. I cannot say anything else at the moment.”

HOME Box Office (HBO), an American premium cable and satellite TV network owned by Time Warner, is planning a stand-alone Web service in Spain to compete with Netflix Inc.

By the end of the year, residents in Spain will have access to an HBO streaming service for the first time, making the network’s programming available without a payTV subscription.

But HBO’s introduction of an Internet channel in Spain, which has high rates of broadbandonly homes, as well as online piracy, is a calculated risk.

HBO will retain exclusive rights to its shows for its streaming service, and will no longer licence its programming to payTV services in the country.

It means that once current licensing deals expire, HBO followers in Spain will be able to watch its first-run programming on the new streaming service only.

While HBO is giving up that licensing revenue, though, the company believes it can make even more money, long-term, by offering its own Web service.

Chief Executive Officer Richard Plepler said: “We follow the money.

We’re making a determination of where we think the most profits lie.”

Spain is the latest country in which HBO is trying to appeal to “cordcutters” or “cord-nevers” - people who cancel their pay-TV subscriptions, or never sign up.

Since 2012, it has offered a Web-only channel in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark called HBO Nordic.

It also unveiled a standalone US online service in April, and a similar offering in Colombia at the end of last year, with plans to expand it across Latin America.

The network’s traditional licensing strategy has been profitable, and the company recently extended licensing deals in Germany, Italy and Canada.

“It’s not one size fits all,” said Plepler. “It’s a multi-lateral strategy, depending upon where we think we can make the most money.”

Farewell Grizzly Adams DAN Haggerty, who played Grizzly Adams in the Seventies TV series and film, has died from cancer aged 74.

Haggerty starred s the nature-loving frontier woodsman after working as a Hollywood stuntman and-handler.

He also guest-starred in numerous TV shows such as CHiPs, Charlie’s Angels and The Love Boat.

The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams tells the story of a mountain man who is forced to

live in the wilderness after being wrongly accused of murder.

While on the run, he

adopts an orphaned grizzly bear and names him Ben. The film became 1974’s seventh-highestgrossing film, and the NBC network had a TV series of the same name, which ran from 1977 to 1978. The series was also a hit in the UK. Both film and TV show were based loosely on the life of James Capen Adams, who trained bears in California in the mid-19th Century.

In Spain, about 75% of residents have highspeed Internet, and around half subscribe to broadband (ADSL) but not pay-TV. Yet HBO will face competition there. At least eight streaming video services already exist in Spain, including Telefonica SA, the dominant telecommunications provider, and Netflix, which arrived in October.

“Many people in Spain have grown accustomed to watching online videos without paying for them,” said Brett Sappington, director of research at Parks Associates.

“Piracy is very common, and getting consumers willing to pay has been a consistent difficulty for subscription video and pay-TV services in Spain.”

What the heck’s that racket?

MORE than 80% of Spanish homes are not equipped with enough sound-proofing according to a company selling sustainable building solutions.

Since 2009, new regulations required Spanish homes to be sound-proofed to European standards but, prior to this, there were no laws covering Spain.

But a survey by Danos, a company selling sustainable building solutions, suggests that Spain has the world’s

second-noisiest homes.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the recommended level of noise is 55 decibels during the day and 45 at night.

But in Spain - and, presumably, Tenerife residents endure up to 65 decibels, second behind only Japan in developed countries.

Saintly blessing for Church-going pets COUNTLESS dogs, cats, rabbits, squirrels and even iguanas, attended their local Spanish churches on Sunday to receive a blessing on the Day of Saint Anthony, patron saint of animals.

Pet-owners lined up around the block of the Church of San Anton in central Madrid, waiting for a priest to sprinkle holy water on their pets.

“Us believers know it provides health and well-being to the animal as well as its owner,” said Francisco Javier Carvajal Aceves, a 40-year-old waiter, as he waited in line, holding his 13-month-old Chihuahua Lula in his arms.

“Animals also are be-

ings, created by God, and deserve to be blessed,” he added, as other dogs with their owners barked in the background.

Mr Aceves has come to the church every year to have his pets blessed since he moved to Madrid from Mexico 16 years ago.

He dressed his dog in a red-and-white sweater, while other pet-owners brought their dogs in brightlycoloured coats or with bows in their fur.

One woman brought a grey rabbit inside a red gym bag to be blessed, an elderly man cradled a white dove in his hand and a young man took an iguana in a shoebox.

Blanca, a 54-year-old decorator, waited halfan-hour for her turn to have her Labrador Retriever blessed by a priest.

“You always have to

wait because a lot of people in Madrid have pets, and everyone wants to have them blessed,” she said.

“You have to come every year to be blessed so they will live for many more years. A dog, any animal, provides great company, gives you much pleasure - and they behave better than humans sometimes. If you don’t have a dog you don’t understand.”

After their pets were blessed, the Faithful lined up outside a church window to buy bread rolls, which were baked according to a secret recipe that keeps them soft.

Each parishioner received three buns, one of which is traditionally kept for a year, alongside a coin, to ensure work and health … and to guarantee the Saint Anthony blessing!

Riches beyond belief!

OXFAM has calculated that the richest 1% in the world now have as as much wealth as the rest of the world combined.

And the world’s richest 62 people have as much wealth between them as the poorest half of the population, according to the charity, which criticised the work of lobbyists and the sum of money kept in tax havens.

It also predicted that the 1% would overtake the rest of the world this time last year.

It takes cash and assets worth £48,300 to get into the top 10%, and £533,000 to be in the 1%.

That means that if you own an average house in London without a mortgage, you are probably in the 1%.

The figures carry various caveats, such as information about the wealth of the superrich is hard to come by, which Credit Suisse says means its estimates of the proportion of wealth held by the 10% and the 1% is “likely to err on the low side”.

As a global report, the figures also include, necessarily, that some estimates of wealth levels in countries from which accurate statistics are not available.

Understandably, some free market think-tanks have questioned the credibility of the figures.

And Mark Littlewood, Institute of Economic Affairs’ Director General, said the statistics were “bogus”.

He added: “The methodology of adding up assets and subtracting debts and then making a global ‘net wealth’ distribution implies that many of the poorest in the world are those in advanced countries with high debts.

“While we might have sympathy for the Harvard law graduate’s plight, it is unclear that worrying about her should be the focus of a development organisation.”

Ben Southwood, Head of Research at the Adam Smith Institute, also believed the data was “misleading”.

Mr Southwood added: “More meaningful measures show greater equality. Those in the middle and bottom of the world income distribution all got pay rises of around 40% between 1988-2008.

“Global inequality of life expectancy and height are narrowing, too showing better nutrition and better healthcare where it matters most. What we should care about is the welfare of the poor, and not the wealth of the rich.”

Oxfam said the 62 richest people having as much wealth as the poorest 50% of the population was “a remarkable concentration of wealth”, given that it would have taken 388 individuals to have the same wealth as the bottom 50% in 2010.

Teacher crisis looms THE ageing teaching population in the archipelago is well documented, but new figures show that the problem is becoming more severe.

With an average age of over 50 years, the current Canary Islands’ teaching staff is one of the oldest in the entire country.

This has been confirmed in a comprehensive report prepared by the ANPE union, revealing that the Archipelago will lose around 2,760 teachers through retirement over the next four years.

new proposals agreed with the new Ministry of Education leaders.

“They want planning for the medium and long-term to rejuvenate and stabilise this vital sector of the community - the teaching staff,” said ANPE Canarias President Pedro Crespo.

He stressed that there had been “a low supply of public employment over recent years, and we need to move junior teachers forward”.

In its report, the union points out that in the smaller islands and the south of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, there is now a “crisis point”.

Not surprisingly, Fuerteventura and La Gomera, in the percentage of interim teachers, accounts for almost half

the current teaching staff which, according to ANPE, “creates instability in the centres and is detrimental to the quality of teaching”.

The organisation believes that education chiefs should negotiate with unions every year to set out new teaching jobs and not just a few appointments in the middle of the year.

“The projection we have done compels us to act with foresight and responsibility,” said President Crespo. “It is true that the child population has dropped, but before that happened we had reduced the number of staff teachers.

“We need to rethink the model, and we have to do so with the data at our fingertips.”

Mayor blocks beach hotel, but says Yes to one nearby GRANADILLA Mayor Jaime González Cejas this week blocked the building of a luxury hotel on El Medano’s La Tejita beach.

“It is not allowed because it is a nature reserve,” he said. “I would be the first to resist such a move.”

But González Cejas has okayed a similar construction nearby, clarifying with the press that this hotel had already been planned in the Sotanvento area, some distance away from La Tejitas beach on dry land.

He added: “It is within urban land for tourist use and will be respecting natural spaces at all times.”

The Mayor said the information published

about the proposed hotel was “biased because the image displayed is La Tejita”.

He added: “What is being planned is an urban area that respects the environment around the Natural Reserve of Montana Rojo.”

González Cejas, who is awaiting reports from the Cabildo, stressed: “A hotel would raise

the bar for quality tourism in Granadilla.

This standard of hotel has been in the planning since the Seventies. And in 2010, the previous government called this urban land touristic.”

The Mayor viewed the original project as an opportunity, but not at the cost of the local beauty. “A hotel will not

be built on La Tejita, and that has been secured by the Cabildo, which has designated the area as protected,” he said.

Last Saturday a group of residents attended a briefing on El Medano Square to oppose this infrastructure.

And there are also online petitions to prevent the hotel being built.

Land Law is so vital to Islands

CANARIAN Government President Fernando Clavijo is negotiating to try to bring the planned Canary Land Law in front of the regional parliament between June or July.

Cafes and restaurants are such a vital sector

THE Canary Islands feature more than 14,800 cafés and restaurants between them, generating 66,000 jobs according to Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce.

José Luis Zubieta, President of the Canaries’ Gastronomy Academy, said the speciality within the catering sector was one of the key elements for business success.

Zubieta, speaking at a ceremony to promote the Bars and Restaurants Higher Management Programme, stressed the importance of restaurateurs paying attention to the cost of the industry.

He added: “We must always focus, or else all the effort will be in vain in this promising sector.”

Vicente Dorta, who heads the Santa Cruz Chamber of Com-

merce, has indicated that his organisation will be carrying out joint activities with the Cabildo to promote the Island as a gastronomic destination.

This training initiative, promoted jointly by his Chamber’s Gastronomic Club and the Canary Islands Brewing Company, has allowed owners of restaurants and bars to receive over 50 hours of training in subjects such as the art of service, warehouse management, purchasing, sales and financial management.

This activity is vitally important for the Chamber of Commerce, not only for its capacity to generate employment but also as a key influence on the Canaries’ economy regarding the tourism sector.

And he hopes it will be “buttoned up” by the end of the year.

Clavijo was speaking to the media at the end of the first round of talks between the construction and tourism sectors, featuring representatives of the Association of Builders and Promoters of the Province of Las Palmas (AECPLP) and the Federation of Hospitality and Tourism (FEHT).

The Canarian President pointed out: “The Canarian economy is driven by tourism, but it relies on the recover the labour market, so we must listen to both parties.”

He understands that there has been obstacles which must be resolved, and that the administration wanted to start the commitment of the reforms needed in the tourist areas and the regeneration of obsolete areas.

And for this, he told those gathered, he needs the help of local

businesses. “There is a will to achieve that goal, and this is required,” he added.

The AECPLP has studied tax incentives and funding that can be captured to assist the tourism sector, and it is said to be behind the injection of public funding for the improvement of public facilities.

“We are working with the Employment Ministry, within the limits the law,” he said. “And the bidding for public works to local businesses will be thorough. But we also seek a commitment that the reforms be set at the market price, to get an opportunity for entrepreneurs from the islands to be involved.”

Clavijo has argued that the space available to build new hotels must be oriented to quality products, consistent with a working model, “so it’s not quality at any price!”.

UK gas comes down!

A 5.1% reduction in its standard gas price for UK householders has been announced by E.On - the first time in five months that any of the big-six energy firms have trimmed their prices.

And the company said the cut was the equivalent of £32 off the average annual bill.

Last week, both the regulator and Prime Minister David Cameron expressed concerns that prices were not being cut in line with falls in the wholesale cost of gas.

The gas company also claims it now has Britain’s cheapest fixedenergy tariff, with the launch of a one-year dual-fuel product for an average price of £783.

Dermot Nolan, Chief Executive of industry regulator Ofgem, said: “This is a step in the right direction, and it is good to see some movement in energy prices for consumers.

“We have consistently called on suppliers to explain why retail prices are not falling, and this price cut goes some way towards addressing that challenge.”

But consumer groups said that prices should be reduced even further.

“With wholesale prices predicted to remain low this year, consumers should be seeing bill reductions of at least 10% - around £120 a year - on both gas and electricity,” said Ann Robinson, Director of Policy at price comparison site

Uswitch. The wholesale price of gas fell by 24% in the year to 20h January 2016, according to market information provider ICIS. The gas firm, which has 4.5 million UK customers, said it had to take account of other factors, apart from wholesale prices.

According Ofgem, just 42% of a standard dual-fuel bill depends on wholesale costs. Nearly a quarter - 23% - is the cost of distribution.

But Tony Cocker, E.On Chief Executive, defended the 5.1%.price cut., saying: “The underlying position is that while the price we pay for our customers’ energy has fallen, we also have to take account of managing various other risks in the market, which can change, and the fact that many of the other costs that we don’t control - but do have to bear - have increased, or may increase.”

The move comes after Ofgem, politicians and poverty campaigners expressed concern that large energy companies were not cutting prices, despite a sharp fall in the price of crude oil and gas.

Ofgem’s Nolan said last week that domestic gas and electricity prices should be cheaper “for the vast majority of people”.

The last time one of the big-six firms cut prices was in August, when British Gas reduced them by 5%.

An ongoing investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has been examining the energy market for 18 months.

Mighty Walmart is cutting staff WALMART, the largest retailer in the world, has announced the closure of 269 global stores as it struggles to compete with online rivals such as Amazon.

The closures will affect 10,000 US workers and 16,000 worldwide, and the shock decision for staff comes as its US retail figures were lowerthan-expected holiday sales totals across the market.

Sales rose just 3% in November and Decem-

ber, falling short of the expected 3.7% growth, according to the National Retail Federation.

The announcement came three months after Walmart chief executive Doug McMillon told investors the company would focus on becoming more nimble.

“Closing stores is never an easy decision,” he told them in October. “But it is necessary to keep the company strong and positioned for the future,” The national shortfall in holiday shopping came despite major retailers offered steep dis-

counts to attract customers.

Online retailing did see a significant increase, rising 9% to £73.4bn, but it was not enough lift the overall figures.

Concerns about holiday shopping added to market concerns as stocks fell sharply. And Neil Saunders, Chief Executive of retail analysts Conlumino, said it was a significant move.

“Walmart’s decision to scale back its store numbers in the US underlines how much the retail landscape has changed over the past few years,” he added.

“The blunt truth is that while stores remain a vital part of the retail mix, they are not quite as relevant as they used to be.

“The growth of online, and especially of Amazon, has undermined that advantage and has given almost all consumers easy access to a comprehensive and relatively cheap assort-

ment of products.”

And he believes other big on-line retailers will follow in Walmart’s footsteps.

The weak economic outlook was not con-

fined to the service sector. Last Friday, the Federal Reserve reported industrial production in December shrunk by 0.4%, the second monthly decrease.

Industrial production, which includes manufacturing, mining and utilities, has been hit by a strengthening dollar and global economic weakness.

Police arrest ‘corrupt’ staff at state-run firm THIRTEEN people were arrested on Monday when Spanish police raided the offices of state-run water contract company Acuamed in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Murcia, as part of their probe into irregular concessions.

It was another chapter in the tale of corruption scandals over the way public and private contracts were awarded during Spain’s boom years, before the country entered a deep recession triggered by its 2008 property crash.

The public backlash

against such irregularities has taken its toll on shocked Spanish politicians, the traditional parties on the right and left losing votes in last month’s inconclusive General Election to newer forces, who have campaigned fiercely against corruption.

Police say Acuamed, which comes under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, had allocated building projects fraudulently, and falsified certifications in order to fatten payments to contractors.

A police spokesman

revealed that the Director and Head of Engineering of Acuamed, which is tasked with contracting, constructing, purchasing and operating public water works for Mediterranean river basins, were among those taken into custody.

And a police statement added that 35 people would be placed under investigation over the coming days.

Acuamed held an urgent meeting on Tuesday morning, and it’s “only objective” was to agree to fire Director Arcadio Mateo.

CHINA CRISIS!

CHINA’S economy grew by 6.9% in 2015, compared with 7.3% a year earlier, which marks its slowest growth in 25 years.

The country’s growth, seen as a driver of the global economy, is a major concern for investors around the world.

The news comes as the International Monetary Fund said it expected China’s economy to grow by 6.3% this year and 6% in 2017. Beijing had actually set an official growth target of “about 7%”.

INSURANCE fraud by car owners is a big problem in Spain … and it’s even worse here. “There are far worse crimes” …

“Insurers earn a lot of money and charge very expensive rates” … “It’s okay, it’s just a scratch.”

These are common excuses for car insurance fraud in the Spanish society. New figures out this week suggest that more than 300,000 drivers in the Canaries continue to justify these practices, which have a high cost for society and for motorists. Since 2009, car insurance fraud has tripled, says the Fraud Barometer Car Insurance Hotline.

Of 100 insurance claims reported in Spain, six are scam attempts, which has serious consequences for the sector.

But some observers say its growth is actually much weaker than official data suggests, though Beijing denies numbers are being inflated.

Analysts said any growth below 6.8% would probably fuel calls for further economic stimulus. Economic growth in the final quarter of 2015 edged down to 6.8%, according to the country’s national bureau of statistics.

Some analysts say

China should focus on productivity rather than consumption in order to sustain high growth.

But having experienced rapid growth for more than a decade, China’s economy has experienced a painful slowdown in the last two years.

It has arrived as the central government wants to move towards an economy led by consumption and services, rather than one driven by exports and investment. But managing that transition has been challenging.

Insurancefraud ‘mafia’

The overall cost of these practices is now estimated at around 1.2 billion euros annually, almost 20% more than in the 2013 report.

Francisco Valencia, the Reports Director calling for greater awareness, said: “Nine million drivers continue to justify insurance fraud, and we want to see an improvement.

However, 6% of the total declared claims remain a deception that affects us all.

“So it is very important that we all understand that, in this area, we end up paying for the sins of everyone. And what re-

ally concerns us is the organised fraud ‘mafias’.”

And, according to Hotline, it’s not just motor insurance crime. The organisation believes that 95% of fraud attempts are related to property damage, and a growing 4.5% of all claims are false injuries. Hotline says the provinces of Cuenca, Murcia and Jaen are the territories with more fraud, while Soria, Salamanca and Burgos have the lowest rates.

In the Canary Islands, Las Palmas (5.5%) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (4.5%) are below the national average.

Some argue that it should focus on productivity to sustain high growth to rebalance the economy “While higher consumption can support growth in the short run, there is little in economic theory that emphasises the expenditure side of GDP as a driver of growth,” said HSBC’s John Zhu. He also said that China’s current stage of development would require more investment, not less, and that the country would rebalance naturally towards consumption and services in time.

“Pushing the economy along those paths too soon would be dangerous,” he warned.

The drama of China’s stock-market crash over the last year has affected investor sentiment, and current data is unlikely to improve matters.

But news that China is slowing down shouldn’t come as a surprise, say financial experts..

The Chinese Government has been broadcasting this for some time as it attempts to transition from a stateled investment and manufacturing economy to one more dependent on services and consumption. Those two aspects now make up 50.5% of the economy, up from 48.5% in 2014.

But the real concern is just how badly China’s economy is likely to do in the future, and whether

these figures can even be trusted.

Recent provincial economic data has indicated that growth could be much lower than what the government says it is. And analysts say any growth numbers below 6.8% would be likely to fuel calls for further stimulus.

China’s annual economic growth numbers are important to the rest of the world - but so, too, are other monthly economic data as they can provide a more in-depth look at the economy, and where it’s heading.

Monthly industrial production (IP) and retail sales numbers for China were also released last week, with both December figures coming in just slightly worse than expected.

Industrial production - or factory output - expanded 5.9% in December, down from 6% in November. Retail sales grew

food and energy), fell last month by a 10th to 0.9%, while its average annual rate was 0.6% in 2015, compared with zero the previous year. This slight December fall comes via the price of non-energy industrial goods (NEIGs), the year-on-year rate of which fell by a 10th to 0.6%. The services sector remained stable at 1%, and processed foods at 1.4%.

In turn, the fall in NEIGs was attributable to a decline in the clothing and footwear sector, the annual rate falling by a 10th at 0.5%, which reversed the upward trend from spring 2015.

This could be because the first winter sales

were brought forward earlier than last year.

As for the services, the two-tenths’ slowdown in tourism and hotel and catering is noteworthy. It was generated, in turn, by the package-holiday performance, which fell by 1.2 points to 2.8%.

In month-on-month terms, the general CPI fell by 0.3% in December, while the core CPI remained stable.

The year-on-year December CPI rate climbed in all autonomous regions, with positive figures in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and the Basque Country (0.3% in all three regions), Valencia (0.2%) and La Rioja (0.1%).

“The health of the labour market, retail sales and industrial production data are all key indicators for growth,” said Catherine Yeung, from Fidelity International.

“Like any economic data, it’s important to look at the themes and trends that drive them, and not just the headline figure.

“When you look at China with this lens, we’re not seeing a meltdown just a slowdown.”

Others said the numbers were actually a relief, economist Tony Nash offering: “GDP was generally in line with what many, including the IMF, expected.

He added: “China’s growth in 2015 was equivalent to the size of the entire economy of Switzerland or Saudi Arabia. That’s not an easy feat and shows the magnitude of the accomplishment.”

Inflation down to zero in 2015 THE Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at zero, year-on-year in December, according to INE - the Spanish National Statistics Institute.

This rate is threetenths higher than in November and coincides with INE’s December figures. Energy products and, to a lesser extent, non-processed foods are the CPI components which contributed most to this increase.

Following this result, the average annual CPI rate for 2015 stands at -0.5%, compared with -0.2% in 2014.

The cost of energy products recorded a year-on-year rate of -7.5% in December, com-

pared with -10% the previous month.

This moderate fall was mainly down to solid and liquid fuels, which slowed the rate of decline by more than three points to 10.6%.

Electricity prices also had an effect, posting a year-on-year increase of 0.7%, which was 30% higher than the previous month.

The year-on-year rise in the price of all foods remained steady at 1.7% in December. This stability was derived from a slight increase in nonprocessed foods, by a 10th to 2.5%, and the price stability of the processed variety.

In terms of fresh foods, the slight rise was attrib-

utable to fresh fruit, plus fresh and frozen fish, partially offset by chicken and lamb prices, and by the slowdown in pulses and fresh vegetables (2% against November’s 4.4%).

In turn, the year-onyear rate for processed foods, beverages and tobacco remained steady at 1.4% for the fifth consecutive month.

Oil and fats continue to exercise the strongest inflationary pressure, with a year-on-year increase of 23.6%, despite the moderation in recent months.

Core inflation, which excludes the most volatile components of the CPI (Consumer Price Index), such as fresh

When comparing this rate with Eurostat estimates for the Eurozone as a whole in December (0.2%), the inflation differential for Spain fell by three-tenths to 0.3% points.

Now he excited no fear or sensation.” – Traudl Junge, Hitler’s secretary This new one-off partly dramatised documentary for ITV tells the story of the final hours of one of history’s most notorious dictators through freshly-unearthed interviews with those who were present in his bunker.

The interviews filmed in 1948 with Adolf Hitler’s inner circle are previously unseen on British television, and along with rare archive material and dramatisations, they provide a unique insight into the moments when the Führer came to admit defeat as the Soviet army rampaged into central Berlin.

Among those interviewed in the historic footage are Hitler’s secretary Traudl Junge, leader of the Hitler Youth Artur Axmann, who found the dictator’s body, Eva Braun’s sister Ilse, press attaché Heinz Lorenz, army major Baron von Loringhoven, and adjutant Willi Johannmeier.

They tell the story of how Hitler succumbed to personal and military defeat in the Second World War, eventually shooting himself in a suicide pact with his wife Eva Braun, whom he married in his Führerbunker beneath his headquarters on the day before they died. He had decamped there in January 1945 once it became clear that the Germans were going to be defeated, and killed himself on April 30 as the Red Army overran the capital.

The interviews stem from persistent rumours in 1948 that Hitler remained alive. Nuremberg trials judge Michael Musmanno was so incensed by this suggestion that he set out to disprove it by interviewing on film those who were present during the final moments in the bunker.

Judge Musmanno’s interview tapes lay forgotten for 65 years until they were uncovered in an archive in Pittsburgh, USA, in 2013.

Parts of the bunker were reconstructed for the programme using details from the eyewitness testimony to help build a full picture of the last hours, days and minutes of the Führer’s life.

Cautious Gordon is aghast when Harry shakes on the risky deal to make masses of extra cash for the Selfridge Group as a whole.

Grove teases Meryl about being relegated to the stockroom, but he’s soon red-faced himself when he stumbles down the stairs at home. As Grove’s discomfort grows, Crabb intervenes and Grove is forced to rest at home.

Focused on the recent trial of 94-year-old ex-Auschwitz accountant Oskar Groening, The Girl Who Forgave the Nazis tells one last unforgettable story from the Holocaust. The trial led to worldwide controversy when one survivor, 81-year-old Eva Kor, publicly forgave and embraced Oskar Groening in court. The image of their hug went viral.

Incredibly, Eva forgave Groening despite the fact that almost all of her family were killed in the Auschwitz gas chambers, and she and her twin sister Miriam were subjected to horrific medical experiments at the hands of notorious Nazi Doctor Mengeles. Both nearly died. Eva believes her message of forgiveness can help change the world. But it made no difference to the outcome of the trial; Groening was found guilty of being an accomplice to the mass murder of 400,000 Jews and sentenced to four years in prison.

Which familiar faces are set to return for the new series of Endeavour after the shocking and tragic events at the end of series II? Falsely accused Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans) was last seen isolated and alone languishing in prison, framed for the murder of Chief Constable Rupert Standish.

Endeavour had unearthed corruption at the very heart of the City Force but his investigation had taken a sinister twist.

What of Endeavour’s senior officer, DI Fred Thursday (Roger Allam), whose life was hanging in the balance after being shot in the chest?

Film Four – Coda Mid June. 1967. Endeavour finds himself occupied with unexpected strife in his personal life recruited by an old college mentor, Felix Lorimer, into investigating matters more suited to private eyes. Asked to monitor the movements of Lorimer’s estranged younger wife NINA, a natural spark between two vulnerable souls is struck.

With change in the air, and a shakeup in Oxford’s criminal underworld signalling an uncertain future, the young detective is set on a path that will ultimately lead to heartbreak.

The grisly murder of Cedric Clissold, a middle‐manager with a line in fashion, shot twice in the chest, proves another jolt in the proceedings. When a notorious Oxford crime family, headed by violent chieftains Frank and Cole Matthews, is put in the frame for a possible role in Clissold’s death, Endeavour’s fierce intellect suspects there is a more complex answer yet to come. And, as he considers his future on the force, Series 3 builds to its agonising conclusion...

Attenborough And The Giant Dinosaur tells the story of the fossil discovery and reconstruction in Argentina of the largest known dinosaur, a new species of titanosaur.

Measuring 37m long - close to four London buses put end to end - and weighing 70 metric tons, latest calculations show that this new giant titanosaur is the biggest animal ever to walk the earth.

In 2014, a shepherd spotted the tip of a gigantic fossil bone sticking out of a rock in La Flecha Farm in the Chubut Province in the Argentinian desert. When the news reached palaeontologists at the Egidio Feruglio Paleontology Museum (MEF) in Trelew, Argentina they set up camp at the discovery site. The first bone turned out to be a 2.4m long (femur) thigh bone, the largest ever found. By the end of the dig they had uncovered more than 220 bones.

“This is going to be difficult for me to keep up because life’s too short not to have a scone.” Jane McDonald Going cold turkey from sugar can be seriously tough and Sugar Free Farm sets out to put this to the test.

Six famous faces undergo a dietary experiment: living entirely without sugar for two weeks. Turning their backs on the modern food industry, they live and work on a country farm in return for their share of healthy, wholesome food. Breaking their addiction to sugar will push their bodies to the limits.

Embarking on the radical regime are musical theatre star Jane McDonald, comedian Rory McGrath, quiz mastermind and Chaser Mark Labbett, actress Tupele Dorgu, TOWIE’s James ‘Arg’ Argent and ex-soap star Jennifer Ellison.

On entering Sugar Free farm, former West End actress and mum-of-three Jennifer says: “I’ve really neglected myself, I don’t look after myself at all.

Throughout the day I’m constantly grabbing a chocolate bar or a can of fizzy drink, hence why I’m so fat.”

Reality star Arg adds: “This isn’t a diet we’re used to so it’s going to be tough.”

Living in a farm worker’s cottage on Laverstoke Park Farm, set deep in the Hampshire countryside, over the course of the two weeks the celebrities’ roles are split and rotated with four of them working on the farm during the day and two tasked with preparing and cooking the sugar-free meals. On hand to keep the celebrities on the sugar-free wagon is nutritionist Angelique Panagos, who warns: “There’s not going to be one grain of sugar for the two weeks on the farm. They’ll be learning about what foods to eat so when they leave the farm they’ll have new tools.”

With fruit and alcohol on the forbidden list, can life ever be sweet again for our six celebrity guinea pigs?

As the workers get stuck into their new lives on the farm, where they are tasked with milking water buffalo, rounding up pigs and poultry and fertilizing the crops, amongst other duties, the dramas soon begin: Arg has an expensive accident, one of the group breaks down as they struggle to come to terms with the harsh realities of farm life and the celebrities’ bodies begin to react to a life without sugar, with varied results.

The Real Marigold Hotel BBC2, 21.00

In this brand new travel documentary series, an allstar cast of eight famous senior citizens head to India on an experimental adventure of a lifetime.

In the first episode the group arrives at their new home in Jaipur - a private mansion known as a haveli in the heart of the old city - and are initially unsettled by the realities of living in India: hectic roads, animals in the street, chickens killed to order and poor toilet facilities. The heat and hard work makes them consider whether they can do this alone or need to take advantage of the cheap staff costs to settle here.

Jaipur is full of hundreds of years of history, best seen in its impressive buildings, so the group head out to visit the jewel in Jaipur’s crown, the 500 year old Amer Fort. Their guide also offers to show them his local home where they begin to understand the gulf between rich and poor and the impact of the caste system.

In the third season premiere episode, Christy and Bonnie have different ideas about forgiveness when Bonnie’s mother, Shirley, who abandoned her as a small child, suddenly wants to be part of their lives.

Christy is a single mom who, after years of questionable choices, is now sober and trying to get her life on track.

She’s tested daily by her newly sober mother, Bonnie, who is trying to make up for all the ways she’s let Christy down.

Christy is further challenged by her relationships with her own kids. Her daughter, Violet, is engaged to a man twice her age; and Christy’s ten-year-old son, Roscoe, would rather live with his father, Baxter, a former slacker who has only recently got himself together.

It is 1939 and Europe is on the brink of war. Hitler has invaded Czechoslovakia, threatening the lives of the Jewish population. Nicholas Winton, a young British stockbroker, decides he will do everything possible to save the lives of as many Jewish children as he can.

This film tells the extraordinary story of how Nicholas Winton rescued 669 children from the clutches of the Nazis, bringing them by train over to Britain.

In order to provide a degree of credibility with both the British and Nazi governments of the day, Nicholas single-handedly established the British Committee For Refugees from Czechoslovakia - Children’s Section, using it to obtain passports and visas for the children. He then organised for each child to be adopted by families throughout the country and their safe passage across Europe and into Britain.

For nearly 50 years, Nicholas told no-one of his heroic deeds. His incredible story might never have come to light were it not for his wife who, 50 years later, found a suitcase in the attic containing a remarkable scrapbook full of documents and transport plans.

The story then emerged in 1988 when the BBC’s That’s Life programme reunited over two dozen of his ‘children’ with their rescuer for the first time in a highly emotional broadcast.

Featuring Nicholas’ final television interview, dramatic reconstruction of events and the testimonies of the rescued children, Children Saved From The Nazis: The Story Of Sir Nicholas Winton tells the powerful and emotional story of one man’s heroism in the face of Nazi brutality.

Maura, who’s 85, is rushed into A&E after falling over during the night at home.

Her son Mark and his family found her face-down on her bedroom floor when they arrived to take her out for the day.

Maura has pain in her back and medics are concerned that she can’t move or feel her legs. CT scans reveal that Maura has broken bones in her spine. Doctor Sarah has to inform Maura’s son and his wife Denise that her injuries could be life-changing.

The Story Of China: Silk Roads And China Ships BBC2, 21.00

Michael Wood tells the tale of China’s first great international age under the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

From the picturesque old city of Luoyang he travels along the Silk Road to the bazaars of Central Asia, and then into India on the track of the Chinese monk who brought Buddhism back to China. This tale is still loved by the Chinese today and is brought to life by storytellers, films and shadow puppet plays.

Then, in the backstreets and markets of Xi’an, Michael meets descendants of the traders from Central Asia and Persia who came into China on the Silk Road. He talks to Chinese Muslims in the Great Mosque, and across town we hear the amazing story of the first reception of Christianity in 635.

Moving south, we see the beginnings of China as an economic giant. On the Grand Canal a lock built in 605 still handles 800 barges every day!

We track the rise of the silk industry, and the world’s favourite drink tea.

Michael looks too at the spread of Chinese script, language and culture across East Asia. “China’s influence on the East was as profound as Rome on the Latin West,” he says. “It still is today.”

Finally the film tells the intense drama of the fall of the Tang. Among the eyewitnesses were China’s greatest poets. In a secondary school in a dusty village, where the Chinese Shakespeare - Du Fu - is buried in the grounds, the pupils take Michael through one famous poem about loss and longing as the dynasty falls. And in that ordinary classroom, we get a sense of the amazing drama and the deep-rooted continuities of Chinese culture.

W C choice Scorpion ITV2, 21.00 Walter’s attempt to “normalise” goes horribly wrong when a nefarious virus is uploaded to his computer, turning Team Scorpion’s new “smart” building project into a burning death trap with people locked inside, on a special 90-minute episode of Scorpion. Scorpion is inspired by a true story - its a high-octane drama about eccentric genius Walter O’Brien (played by Elyes Gabel) and his team of brilliant misfits who are the last line of defence against complex, high-tech threats of the modern age. O’Brien’s “Scorpion” team includes Toby Curtis (played by Eddie Kaye Thomas), an expert behaviourist who can read anyone, Happy Quinn (played by Jadyn Wong), a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvestor Dodd (played by Ari Stidham), a statistics guru. Pooling their extensive knowledge to solve mind boggling dramas amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo (played by Robert Patrick), who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien.

However, while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other’s humour and quirks, life outside their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen (played by Katharine McPhee), who has a young gifted son, to translate the world for them. These nerdy masterminds have at last found the perfect job; a place where they can apply their exceptional brainpower to solves the nation’s crises, while also helping each other learn how to fit in.

Death In Paradise BBC1, 21.00

Events take an unnerving turn when, at the funeral of Dwayne’s mentor and local barber Cedrik Verga, Dwayne receives a mysterious text from the deceased’s phone that reads, “I was murdered”. With the phone in Cedrik’s coffin during the cremation, is this a prank in poor taste - or something more sinister?

Humphrey agrees to help Dwayne investigate, and when they visit Cedrik’s house they find inconsistencies which rule out death from natural causes. As relationships are questioned, motives explored, and all possibilities considered, could the most loved man on the island have been a victim of murder? And how well does Dwayne really know his oldest friends?

In the meantime, Humphrey tries his best to prove to Florence that his culinary skills are good enough to captivate a woman’s heart. The team all head to the beach shack for a typical English dinner of shepherd’s pie - but can Humphrey remember the basics and wow his guests?

THE MEMORY-MAKER!

By Jamie Droo THERE are certain adjectives which appear extremely powerful in writing, and the one I am using to describe a stand-out artiste in this article is “remarkable”.

Some acts in Tenerife simply perform their routine every night without change, pretty much sticking to the script. It would not even be noticed in the UK, where artiste probably work in a venue twice a year, say.

And most venues there don’t have visitors frequenting various places to seek out live entertainment.

Therefore, an act’s script there can be used verbatim every night, without it even being noticed as repetitive, because of the way the mechanics of the circuit work.

But in most venues here, an artiste will be given work throughout the year and, generally, appears on a regular basis.

For instance, a bar will have a compere who begins the night and will present a show at 11pm nightly. And that artiste will be offered that slot on the same night, weekly or fortnightly, for the foreseeable future.

This system works in most holiday resorts because of the turnaround of clientele.

The audience is usually made up of people who are seeing a show for the first time, or have returned to see the show again, having seen it just once on a previous holiday.

So when an artiste has a scripted act, it is noticed only by those who live and work here, and have seen these shows week in, week out.

Some artistes can be watched by people time and again, even if they are scripted. But the remarkable ones are those who use the art of “ad-lib”, which is truly pure in entertain-

ment. Its full meaning is from the Latin phrase, ad libitum, which means spontaneously, without prior practice or just unrestrained.

To be able to ad-lib is a real freedom on any stage and, if delivered well, is always received well by the audience. It can come from any kind of entertainer - musician, comedian, singer or actor - and is an art in itself.

As far as musicians go, few that I have seen are equipped with this skill. But there is one musician who stands out in my mind, and he is still performing nightly here on the Island.

His musical knowledge has no boundaries, and his versatility on numerous instruments is nothing short of amazing.

The first time I saw him was in a big bar, when he was playing in a band as lead guitarist and providing backing vocals and harmony.

I was blown away by some of the lead breaks in the music, and especially his solo during the band’s cover of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In The Wall.

Over the years, I have heard him play hun-

dreds of times and I’ll never get bored of hearing his lead breaks.

Phil Francis is one of the purest musicians I have met, and his skills don’t end with a Stratocaster. The second time I saw him, he was sitting in on a jam in the Stage Door musicians’ bar in The Patch area of Las Americas.

But this time he was

on bass guitar. The song was Play That Funky Music, by Wild Cherry. This was almost 15 years ago, but I remember it as though it were last week.

All musicians are completely free and unrestrained, unless they are playing in an orchestra, or at a show requiring strict tempo or artistic accompani-

ment. However, when musicians “jam”, they have the freedom to unleash their talent.

I had never heard or seen the art of “slap bass” before. This is a technique used by funk and reggae bassists, and it’s often considered to be the most badass way to play the bass.

It is played with the

fingers and instead of plucking like the average bassist. The musician will hammer the strings, or pull and release them to create a popping sound as the string hits the pick-up.

The “wow!” factor didn’t stop there because after that song, Phil then moved on to the drums and continued with the band. It was then that I realised he was a true master of his craft.

I have seen Phil play a number of instruments over the years, including keyboard and piano, and he has appeared in numerous bands who have all been successful.

The rock genre seemed to be his strength, but then I watched him one night performing early-doors in San Eugenes, where he and his acoustic guitar provided easylistening tunes for the crowd.

Yet again, it was a different style of playing from what I was used to seeing and hearing by Phil, but equally as skilful.

If you love live music, he is an absolute must-see. Phil can be found at Harleys Bar in Torviscas, playing alongside fellowmusicians Phil (keyboards) and Penny (drums) in a band called Crush.

He also plays solo with his acoustic guitar in San Eugenes, from 8pm on alternate nights through the week. Oh, and he plays in The White Knights trio during the afternoons at various venues, including The Moonlight Bar in Torviscas.

Phil has been nominated for awards as a solo act and with the various bands he has played in, but he is not in the business for awards but for the love of music.

Those who have seen and heard Phil play will have long-lasting memories of his talent. He is a very deep, spiritual man and extremely inspirational to other musicians.

It is rare to be able to see someone of this calibre here in Tenerife and not on the world’s stage.

Just like the jungle!

By Vanessa Vee THE big San Sebastian fiesta in Adeje this week left me with an extra “making memories” day for me and my family.

Work commitments meant that not all of us could go, so the kids and I dragged along Auntie Suzy to visit the Jungle Park, in Chayofa.

It’s always a firm favourite, and literally on the doorstep, which made this a great choice for us. On entry, it is advisable to plan your day around the shows on offer at set times throughout the day.

Our first option was to make our way to the penguin pool, ready for feeding time, much to the kids amusement.

There are so many animals and activities on offer that it was questionable whether we would manage to fit in everything in the allotted time.

We were navigating the day with a pushchair for the two-yearold, but I am pleased to say that 97% of the

park was fully accessible.

Well, I suppose I could have attempted the rope bridge had I wanted the challenge, but I decided to opt out on this occasion!

YES! There is a rope bridge, there is the

sound of the animals and this actually is like being in the jungle. Yet it’s literally 10 minutes away from Playa de las Americas.

A great environment houses all the animals, and it is obvious that they are kept in condi-

tions as near to their natural habitat as possible.

And with so many animals on offer, there is something to appeal to all. from primates, to birds of prey, sea life and wildlife, to name

but a few.

For lunch we opted for the restaurant and, luckily, we timed it to coincide with the sealion show, so we had great viewing from a shaded area.

Admittedly, the food was priced just like any other theme park offers, and slightly costly, but the quality was excellent, it really was. Fabulous choices, great service and perfect setting, as well as being entertained by the amusing sea-lions.

While the five-year-old held the route map, it meant, inevitably, that lots of places were duplicated, and lots of wrong turns on the way!

For example, I can recollect at least five visits to the “scary” caves!

We had the chance to walk through a large enclosure, with colourful parrots flying among us, as well as large iguanas mooching around our feet.

The hands-on experience didn’t stop there, though, because when we visited the emus, we were able to purchase food. After taking in the instructions carefully, I still couldn’t believe we could feed them directly from our bare hands.

Of course, we had to prove to the kids that it was quite safe, which was initially quite

worrying. But after a few nervous giggles, I plucked up the courage and all was good. The emus were gentle with all of us, including the youngest … and what a fascinating experience for all ages. Definitely a massive highlight of the day. However, the most spectacular, I feel, was the falconry display. This is an outstanding show of birds of prey - from storks, pelicans, vultures, buzzards and eagles - who all fly the area confidently, and they were handled by a confident team of falconers.

I could write pages and pages about the animals and the experience: the amusing monkeys, the cheeky meercats, the bobsleigh ride, the glamorous cats, the mischievous lemurs … the list goes on and on.

Whatever your age, I recommend you take a day out to visit the Jungle Park.

More roadside drug tests

SPAIN’S Directorate-General of Traffic (DGT) will carry out many more roadside tests for drugdriving this year to help combat traffic accidents.

This add up to about 120,000 tests - a 38% increase from 2015 - and suggests that drug or drink-taking drivers are a relatively big problem where road incidents are concerned.

The Government de-

partment’s increase throughout Spain means there will be around 45,000 more tests compared with last year, which is in line with the Strategic Plan for Road Safety 2010/2020.

The DGT has prioritised what is termed as “zero vision” in relation to the use of drugs and alcohol before driving.

And I am sure you noticed more Guardia Civil Traffic police stopping drivers randomly over the festive period, not only at night time, and testing them on the spot.

The DGT, to assist the Guardia Civil, has been given a 12m-euro budget to buy drug-testing kits and supplementary materials necessary, as well as recruiting extra

laboratories to analysis potentially-positive samples.

The scheme can only be a good thing, even though drivers obviously dislike random checks or stoppages made during police checks. But the tests will surely make our roads safer for drivers their passengers and even pedestrians in the long run.

A recent survey showed that 59% of drivers tested after committing a traffic offence gave positive readings, and 33% of those tested at random also failed drug-use tests.

Of course, some had taken prescription medications, which carry warnings about driving and may, in some cases, have a bearing on test results. And that’s why

you should always read the instructions on the bottle or packet.

An annual report by the National Institute of Toxicology, which provided the stats, showed that 39,09% of deceased drivers who had been analysed (614 people in total throughout Spain) had tested positive for drugs, alcohol or psychotropic medication.

And even analysis on pedestrians injured or killed as a result of collisions with vehicles featured 173 drug/drinkusers.

Many people rely on their driving licence for work, whether they use their vehicles for that purpose or simply to get to their place of work quicker than by public transport.

And the overall test-

ing scheme is working because there has been a 17% reduction in the number of traffic incidents.

The DGT is now conducting further developments in that direction, and also encouraging regional and municipal police authorities to

increase their testing and awareness on minor roads and dual carriageways.

The answer is simple, of course: don’t drink or take drugs before driving (or at the wheel), and check on any medication prescribed by your doctor or hospital.

Hidden gem sparkles brightly

I ALWAYS enjoy a trip to Playa San Juan. It has a different pace, and the laid-back feel is perfect for that special celebration, or when you are in the mood for a really good meal.

There are some real gems to be found and, recently, I discovered San Borondon. It is set in beautiful surroundings, on the sea-front overlooking the Atlantic.

There’s something about this fishing village which sets it apart from others on the West Coast. San Borondon has exquisite food - and “exquisite” is definitely the word to describe it.

Calixte Olivier, the Belgian Head Chef, has quite a reputation. You can discover on Trip

Advisor how highly-recommended he comes for his excellent fayre. And it’s very much his work because he not only runs the kitchen but is also in charge of the menus.

We were welcomed by Calixte and also Head Waiter Mario Mende.

The food is the very best of French cuisine, with a touch of Italian and Belgian if you wish - and all made fresh on order, including his vegetables and sauces.

Calixte advised us on our main course, but before that point he brought us a little taste from most of his menu, so we were spoiled for choice just on the starter.

He told us his speciality, apart from his food, was definitely his sauces – and he was he so right because they were the most delicious sauces we have tasted in a long time!

cream and white-wine sauce with garlic; tasty croquettes, in a crusty breadcrumb casing with Parmesan and Roquefort cheese filling, accompanied by a side-salad which included fried rocket and cherry tomatoes … and the sauce oozing out of them was exquisite!

We also tried tasty cheese with basil, and prawns with truffles and Calixte was quick to point out although we were offered small portions of his menu, he does not do tapas.

We finally arrived at our main course, and my colleague chose the steak tartare, with loads of flavour and Italian style, complete with basil and oregano, accompanied by pure nuts, Parmesan cheese, marinated tomato, crisp parma ham and

sauté potatoes with the skins on.

My choice was chicken breast in small pieces, in a creamy tarragon white-wine sauce with side-salad and freshlycut chips. And it was simply delicious.

I must mention the fondue bourguignon being served on another table. It was prime beef with five sauces, chips and salad, and all for less than 25 euros for two people!.

There was a selection of gorgeous sweets, and we decided on home-made chocolate mousse. And being a chocoholic, it was pure heaven for me!

Calixte has owned a restaurant in the past, and this shines through when he talks about the whole dining experience.

A regular visitor to Tenerife, he made the same decision as most of us and brought his family to live in the sun to avoid the cold winters in his homeland.

It’s certainly a decision that agrees with him and, after eating at San Borondon, with us as well!

I must mention the excellent selection of cocktails, and some specials which are really popular are the Julia and the espresso Martini.

On the sea-front in the old part of town, a few steps from the harbour, Restaurant San Borondon is a hidden gem that needs no polishing.

Adeje Chicken in Buzanada Bryan is back but now he is the owner with his mum in the kitchen for the famous home-made food & all her excuisite & authentic recipes of mojo & Ali-oli. LOVE him or loathe him, respect him or knock him, the late Robert David Jones - or DAVID BOWIE, as we all know him - will be missed. And not just on a music front.

Bowie, born in 1947, quickly made a name for himself as a singer … but today, I’m celebrating all that wasn’t music about him. In other words, his contribution to the hair and fashion world, which I write about regularly in the Canarian Weekly.

David was a great inspiration to the world of fashion, making it possible, not only then but even now, for any man to express himself through clothes and styling.

Before him, we had no one to push the boundaries of men’s fashion, making it possible for anyone to copy his androgynous looks.

He was a Cultural Chameleon, taking his inspiration from the four corners of the globe to give us never-ending outfits that shocked and provoked attention from the media and his many fans.

One of Japan’s first fashion stylists was responsible for his first eye-opening designs as the infamous Ziggy Stardust - that hedonistic mix of male/female that got everyone to stand up and take no-

tice of what this guy was singing about in the early Seventies.

Bowie transforming himself a few years later into Aladdin Sane, a character based on his brother’s mental issues.

And just as we were getting used to his eclectic mix, he toned it all down by appearing as the Thin White Duke, a well-suited but still feminine-looking man in clothes you can now find on any high street.

David’s influences, noted by the fashion world, were being copied everywhere. Men started dressing-up, taking just as long as their girlfriends to get ready for a night out.

The transition into his Diamond Dogs era came in the early Eighties, when he sported suits and ties but ditched the heavy make-up he once wore.

His classic look defined the era and, again, his style was reflected around the world. Right up to his untimely death, he was one of the most creative men ever - a true style icon above all others.

As I always state in my hair columns, your hair is what defines you, and Bowie certainly knew how to play that game, using his own hair to reflect his mood and match his latest “character”.

He went from Ziggy Orange, to Blonde, and every colour in between, in the blink of an eye, never failing to shock and amaze with his new hair creations.

ludicrous, but on him they worked! Often imitated but never beaten, he was THE original Hair Chameleon.

He mutated from short to long, never keeping the same style for too long. Once it had been copied, he moved on to his new look. And the whole world was aghast at the way he just didn’t care what others thought.

Susi Fussey was the hair-stylist who accidentally created his signature Ziggy cut, because never before had anyone seen a man who’d had his hair teased into a rainbow of daring colours.

Having such a creative and ground-breaking artist like David around made, and still does make, my job more interesting. There’s nothing new any more - just a re-vamp of what was before - but, thanks to the Starman, we can all say he has touched our lives in a musical way and also as a fashion inspiration and hair guru.

So give thanks to David Bowie as the Man Who Fell To Earth, and made all of our lives just that little bit more stylish … and interesting!

The happiness workout

IT’S not only your body that benefits from exercise, you know, because so, too, does your mind. In fact, probably more so.

And while depression rates and pessimism seem to be everywhere, there are simple, drugfree steps we can all take to improve our mood, our outlook and our general quality of life.

At the end of the day, being happy is a decision more than anything else.

According to

scientific research, we are all born with a certain predisposition to happiness. Some are just naturally more “glass-half-full” people than others, who, unless they try really hard, will always lean more towards the “glass-half-empty” view.

Despite this, we can all adopt certain measures to increase our happiness levels.

Here are a few easy examples of small actions which can make a big difference: 1.

Stop comparing yourself with others The only comparisons you should make are with your former self.

You have no idea about other people’s journeys, so stop making assumptions, especially when they serve only to make you feel even more inadequate.

Concentrate on your life, your goals and your progress. If you do that, you won’t have time to worry about what other

people are doing with their lives.

2. Think (and speak) positively In other words, stop complaining.

Stop filling your head with negative thoughts.

You’d be amazed (or horrified) at just how much damage the subconscious mind can do, and your sub-conscious believes you every time you tell yourself: “I can’t do this. I’m fat.

I’m a rubbish parent.

I’m not good at my job,” etc. Try giving yourself more praise, focus on the positive …

and watch how your life begins to change.

3. Turn the music up Where would we be without music? What else has the power to bring back vivid memories of specific moments, making us cry or laugh within the space of a couple of minutes? In moments of despair, anxiety or exhaustion, it is nothing short of miraculous how listening to one of our favourite, upbeat tracks can completely turn our mood around.

Set aside at least 15 minutes every day to

lose yourself in music and recharge your batteries.

4. Laugh a lot Laughter, the best medicine ever known to man and completely free and available to everyone, is one of the most powerful cures for everything, from physical pain to emotional conflict. It boosts your immune system, releases endorphins, improves blood-flow and relaxes your whole body, improving even the most difficult of times.

There are even laughter therapy classes, specifically dedicated to harnessing its healing potential.

5. Move your body Dance, stretch, walk, cycle, surf, run, jump or play - whatever you prefer. The important thing is simply to get your body moving.

However much you might not feel like doing it, we all know how much better you feel afterwards.

Exercise gets your blood pumping, which, aside from making you feel more energetic and alive, also increases the rate at which diseasefighting anti-bodies and white blood cells run around the body.

Endorphins (happy hormones) are released into your bloodstream, while the release of stress-related hormones slows down.

Overall effect: you feel happier.

No one is trying to say that it’s easy (or even possible) to feel happy all the time. Life can be hard, traumatic events can happen and we all have bad days. The trick is to try to deal with life’s inevitable ups and downs in the best way possible for our own, overall well-being.

20-year cancer warning

By Val Sainsbury RISING levels of obesity and unhealthy weight could be linked to 670,000 extra cases of cancer in the next 20 years.

Experts say that if current trends continue, almost three in four adults could be overweight or obese by 2035,

bringing a host of health issues.

A joint report from Cancer Research UK and UK Health Forum says TV adverts for some foods should be banned before 9pm.

Health officials stress that they are committed to tackling childhood obesity. And Department of Health officials have already banned adverts featuring junk food during children’s TV programmes. They are also launching a childhood-obesity

strategy shortly. Recent studies suggest obesity is linked to several cancers, including oesophageal (gullet), womb, and bowel tumours.

And being overweight has long been associated with conditions such as diabetes and coronary heart disease.

In this study, researchers used a computer modelling system, together with historical and current health data, to predict the impact of obesity over the next two decades.

Their work suggests that by 2035, a rise in the number of people who are overweight or obese would contribute to 4.6 million additional cases of type-2 diabetes and 1.6 million extra cases of heart disease.

Experts estimate this could lead to an extra £2.5bn in costs to the NHS - for 2035 alone!

The report also recommends a number of ways to tackle the excess sugar problem, including the introduction of a 20p-

per-litre tax on sugary drinks, and a review of how food is advertised online.

Officials behind the report say they have even taken into account that increases in obesity have started to slow in the past few years.

But they also say one of the major challenges they face is an inability to take into account major future changes - such as new drugs or technologies.

Professor Susan Jebb, at the University of Ox-

ford, said that while interventions to curb obesity were welcome, the report overlooked the need to fund support for people already overweight.

She added: “Most people know that smoking causes cancer, but fortunately, most people in the UK now don’t smoke.

“And for them, managing their weight is the single, most important thing they can do to reduce their risk of cancer.”

MISSION accomplished! All 200 dogs at the refuge had a fabulous weekend, thanks to our supporters of all nationalities, joining together for our Open Weekend.

We asked people to come in and help us with the dogs, and every single pooch, big, small, young and old, over the course of the weekend,was duly walked, bathed, brushed, played with and, most importantly, given some serious, loving cuddles and a treat or two, It was so good to see the dogs so happy and having the attention they crave and deserve.

Thank-you to all who attended, and also for the tinned dog-food donations and the money put in the collecting tins, which will all help

towards the running and upkeep of the refuge.

We are always looking for dog-walkers, or maybe people just willing to play and brush some of our many dogs.

So if you would like to help, please visit us during our open hours, as detailed elsewhere.

Adopt a pet If you are looking to adopt a dog, you won’t have to search far - certainly not into

your pockets, unless you want to make a donation, which we always welcome We do not charge adoption fees, and every animal is fully micro-chipped, passported, inoculated, castrated or sterilised.

They are all socialised and free of heart-worm, to give them the best possible start in their new life.

Donations are very much welcomed towards these costs, but

not compulsory.

Feline Leukaemia

the facts

FELINE Leukaemia is second only to trauma as the leading cause of death in cats, killing 85% of those infected within three years of diagnosis and symptoms showing, which is a shocking statistic.

But though the disease can spread between cats, it cannot be transmitted to people, dogs, or other animals. It is passed from one cat to another through saliva, blood, and to some extent, urine and faeces.

The virus lives for just a few hours outside the cat’s body, and grooming and fighting are the most common ways for infection to spread.

Even kittens can contract the disease in the uterus, or via the milk of an infected mother.

Apparently, the disease is often spread by healthy cats. So even if one appears healthy, it may still be infected and able to transmit the virus.

There are so many symptoms for Feline Leukaemia, which can mirror much-less-dangerous problems in your cat. So the best way to discover whether yours is infected is through a simple, inexpensive blood test.

It can be performed by your vet, is highly sensitive and can identify cats with very early infections. If your cat tests positive, it does not have to be be put to sleep automatically, despite many people believing otherwise.

If you have an “indoor cat”, with no contact with non-infected cats, and has regular vet check-ups and good preventive health care, it can be kept feeling well for some time, even years.

Sadly, there is no cure for Feline Leukaemia. Secondary infections can be treated as they appear, and cats with cancer can re-

ceive chemotherapy.

But these treatments are expensive, and the prognosis is not guaranteed.

Keeping your cat indoors, away from infected cats, is a sure way to prevent them from contracting the disease.

In addition, vaccines can be given to them, and we recommend annual injections for all non-infected cats - specifically those allowed to venture outside, or put in a cattery while you are on holiday.

There is a large straycat population here in the South, and Cats Welfare is doing its best to neuter, to control the population and the disease.

Prior to neutering, stray cats are tested for Feline Leukaemia and, if positive, are put to sleep. It’s not decision taken lightly but, sadly, it is necessary to help control this deadly disease.

A special adoption If you’re looking for a new, furry companion, please consider Smokey. She is an all-black, cuddly bundle with so much love to give. She has tested positive for Leukaemia, but she’s so loving that we really want to give her a chance to live her life out in peace.

We will pay for the treatment concerning her Leukaemia at one of our vets, so there will be no extra cost to her new owner. And she is already spayed.

Champions march on AFTER last week’s Cup games, we returned to league action in the Direct Telecom Pool League - and it was pretty much as you were in Division One as Gaffers A continued their dominance.

They are chalking off the wins needed to retain the league, and at the moment they are flying. A tricky game awaited them at Palms B, on paper at least, but the hosts were never in it.

Palms lost the first five frames, Graeme was chinned twice, and they never recovered. They did take three of the next four frames, only for Kev to finish the job off for Gaffers.

It was another solid performance from the defending champions, and the league is now theirs to lose.

Tenerife Hammers A are trying to grab their coat-tails, but the gap looks too big. They did strengthen their case for the silver spot with another win, this time away at Rewind A. But they had to work hard for the victory.

The home team struck early, racing into a 4-1 lead, but this was the wake-up call the Hammers needed. They regrouped, took the next six frames and all three points.

Dreamers A, who

maintained third spot, were also forced to graft for their win. They travelled to Amarilla Golf to take on a Terrace Roosters side who were quick out of the blocks, taking the first session 3-1.

The visitors then found their rhythm to take the next session by the same score, levelling at 4-4. But when Roosters moved ahead in the next frame, they sensed victory. It wasn’t to be, however, because Dreamers won the final three frames, heaving a sigh of relief as they avoided dropping points.

Treehouse A kept pace with the pack after picking up three points at home against Exiles A. It was another match filled with close frames, the visitors going 2-0 up.

But Treehouse ground out the win, their team effort reflected in the 8-4 score. They have been a bit out of sorts recently and were glad to get back to winning ways.

Tenerife Hammers C again find themselves in a relegation fight as they sit bottom of the division. A clash with rivals Bluebell A offered them an opportunity to put some points on the board.

But their visitors are starting to find their legs in this division and were in good form. They picked up early frames and, despite a spirited performance from the hosts, Bluebell completed a routine win to move away from the bottom.

their stride and picked off the early games.

Sabores put up a fight, but the tank was empty after their Cup heroics and Picasso’s soon wrapped up the win to take a step nearer the top.

Splash Bar were looking to do the same at Bluebell B, but it didn’t go according to plan.

They were thumped in the Cup, which seemed to have affected their confidence as the home side started taking frames.

Try as they might, Splash couldn’t get a foothold and Bluebell B got over the line for the points.

this season after gaining promotion, entertained The Phoenix, an in-form team.

It was a cagey affair and there was nothing to separate them over the early frames.

It was also cat-andmouse down the home stretch, so it was no surprise that it ended in a draw.

Down in Los Abrigos, Phoenix Potters hosted a Palms A side who are showing some guts. The Werthers Worriers had the early advantage, thanks to JT going in-off a black. And when 3-1 became 4-2, the hosts looked favourites.

But Palms found a groove and, with all players chipping in, they took the next four frames to snatch the lead. Geoff got one back, only for teammate Dave to experience another frame filled with bad luck.

Not that Darren minded as he slammed home the last black to give Palms a massive

win, and leave the Potters gutted.

In Division Two, leaders Crown B were given a reality check by Rewind Rewired, who entered the League late and have not lost a match.

They are a top-flight side in all but name, as Crown B found out. Txema won his three frames as the RR lads showed their class. All the Crown boys won frames, and they stay top of the table, but it was a sobering defeat.

This Rewired victory came 24 hours after their routine win at Hoppys B, and they really are flying up the table.

Meanwhile Picasso’s, who are second, took the trip out to El Medano to tackle Sabores, who were brimming with confidence after their Cup giant-killing the previous week.

Would this be the week they recorded their first League win? The answer to that question was No. The visitors soon got into

season, and a trip to Los Cristianos to play Dreamers B saw them picking up another three points.

Dreamers are down towards the bottom of the League, but they always fancy themselves on their home table.

However, TPT had other ideas and started the match strongly.

Once in front, they knew they were on the way to victory, The confidence flowed and it didn’t take long for them get to the all-important seventh frame and victory.

Meanwhile, the draw has been made for the next round of the Cup knock-out competitions.

Showdown spoils shared!

IT’S as you were at the summit of Division 1 after last Friday’s big Phoenix-Boothen showdown ended in a closefought, rather nervy draw in Los Abrigos.

And it wasn’t a particularly exciting match, with the pressure seemingly getting to a few players, apart from the visitors’ Steve, who was in fine form as he took the first point of the night with 13, 14 and 15-dart legs, and Craig, who hit his first maximum.

A topsy-turvy encounter saw Phoenix 3-2 ahead, then Boothen 4-3 up, leaving

the hosts to take the trebles leg to tie the match.

The upshot is that to seal the title, Phoenix need nine points from fixtures against Gaffers, and then Emerald Shamrocks on the last day of the season.

Boothen, who face Bar 180 B, Gaffers and Waterfall, are still in with a shout.

Hoppys Bar were in top form as they dispatched the Playboys 7-1, but quite how Fluff beat Grizzly is a bit of a mystery. We await the blood test results!

By Roscoe T E N E R I F E reached the midway point of the season with another win, which raises hopes of a second-half promotion push.

I’ve seen a lot of football at the Heliodoro over the years, and I honestly cannot remember a more dull match.

The 2-0 scoreline was about right, but apart from the goals, bunched

in a first-half, 15-minute spell, the game was a dud. Choco Lozano’s well-taken goal from a quick free kick, the first headed goal Tenerife have scored in months, coupled with a fortuitous own-goal from Yeray Alvarez, was just about it as an entertainment sport.

Athletic’s kids kept it tight to avoid a drubbing and Tenerife were happy to play Ray Wilkins’ crab football.

That’s sideways passing, for those too young to remember.

When they did have an attack, they played

a touch too much in the quest to find the perfect goal. It was a tedious watch.

But every match reveals something.

Firstly, Saul Garcia was given his debut at leftback, and the Deportivo kid didn’t do anything wrong. He just didn’t do too much right, either.

Against a bunch of kids, it was the perfect match to blood him in.

But his distribution was shocking and his positioning a joke.

He is very raw and I will be stunned if he cuts the mustard in this league this sea-

son. I hope I’m wrong.

Secondly, Tenerife need more in midfield. Alberto was okay, as was Aitor Sanz. But Vitolo is starting to go backwards. His legs are no longer there, and with his passing resembling our mate Wilkins, he doesn’t add anything.

It’s a worry because Ricardo, also well past 30, is clearly not in the manager’s plans. With 21 games to go, some young blood is needed.

Talking of the kids, there was a real vibrant feel to the side. This was a disadvantage as the Athletic kids prob-

ably felt more at home against their own agegroup, rather than a rough and physical side like Nastic.

Long term, there is lots to like. And next season, if the kids stay and improve, we will be mustard.

Finally a word for Jonás Ramalho, who was magnificent for the visitors. In 2009, he was the first mixed-race player for the famously Basque-only club, and he has earned Under-19 honours for Spain.

He spent two years on loan at Girona, and was part of the squad

who nearly earned promotion to La Liga last season. A serious knee injury - a torn ACL had kept him out of action since May, and last weekend was his first game since.

You wouldn’t have known it. He was comfortably Man of the Match. Starting as a sweeper, he filled in at right-back, moved into midfield, spent 10 minutes on the right wing before dropping back to centre-half when they went down to 10 men.

He was a joy to watch, and this 22 year old is a real player!

By Adi Benson IF the Premier League continues in the same vein, we could end up with one of the most exciting runins ever. The way it is shaping up, we might get to the last day of the season with two or three teams still in contention. And who doesn’t want to see that?

Norwich v Liverpool The Canaries are just about keeping their heads above water in the relegation dog-fight.

But if results go against them this weekend, they could slip into the bottom three. This is a massive game for them, and home form will be the key to survival. They have added a couple of players to their squad, but it may not be enough.

Liverpool have problems of their own, namely in front of goal, as their inability to score cost them points against Man Utd. They seem to have too many average players in the squad who are just not performing, and the names they are being linked with are very uninspiring for the fans.

Klopp has a bigger job than he thought.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-3 Man Utd v Southampton They’re certainly not

Three-way title finale?

playing the most attractive football, and they are definitely below-par.

But Man Utd are still getting the results, and a victory against Liverpool must surely have given the squad confidence going forward. It is important they build on that 1-0 result, but this is a tricky game and a better performance is needed.

The Saints have bought in Charlie Austin, who has a proven Premier League goal-scoring record. But how many games will it take him to get up to pace? Southampton performed well in their last game, scoring three and conceding none, and a similar performance will be needed.

Prediction: Draw Last season: 0-1 Leicester v Stoke With Arsenal dropping points, Leicester will be kicking themselves for not beating Aston Villa because they could have gone clear at the top of the table. This is going to be a tough, physical game and it will be interesting to see how they handle themselves.

They haven’t really had a dip in form yet - and if they can keep it going, a Champions League place beckons.

Stoke won a battling point against Arsenal on Sunday, which kept them in the hunt for a European place. They are just starting to find the right

mix of flair and physicality, which has seen them pick up results and move through the table. And any points here would be another good result.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-1 Sunderland v Bournemouth Try as they might, Sunderland just can’t get a run of results going, and they are starting to look more and more like relegation candidates. The only bright spot is the form of Jermain Defoe, but he cannot keep the team afloat single-handedly. If they are to survive, their defence needs to tighten up and stop conceding.

Bournemouth have a little breathing space after a solid win against fellow-strugglers Norwich. They have bought in Afobe to add some bite to their attack and, with a goal under his belt already, he may be key to their survival prospects.

If they win this, they will be on their way.

Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A Watford v Newcastle After a slow start to the season, Watford are now sitting nicely in midtable and can, more or less, consider themselves safe. They have proved that having two good goal scorers is essential and, once Deeney and Ighalo started finding

the back of the net, they were on their way. They will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing defeat at Swansea.

Newcastle managed to climb out the bottom three at the weekend, but were dumped back down when Watford lost to Swansea. So maybe revenge is on the menu.

Jonjo Shelvey certainly made his mark as he inspired them to that win, but he has a lot more work to do.

Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A

West Brom v Aston Villa Form goes out the window in these derby games, but pride matters and West Brom, as the home team, will be looking to ensure victory.

Their form is average, with two wins, two draws and a defeat in the last five, but they will be confident of seeing off their neighbours.

Villa have managed four points from their last two games, but they are still adrift of their rivals. They need to keep picking up points, but they also need the teams around them to continue losing if they have any chance of survival. The draw at Leicester will have helped their confidence, and they will be looking forward to this fixture.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-0 Crystal Palace v Spurs

Palace haven’t won in five games, but they are still holding a decent league position. They will be hurting after a heavy defeat at Man City and will be raring to get a positive result. And what could be even sweeter than a win against Spurs? The goals have dried up a little and this needs rectifying.

Spurs, who are in decent form, put up a good show against Sunderland after going a goal behind.

They have a good young squad who are improving all the time and they are in the top four Provided they don’t pick up any serious injuries, a Champions League place is theirs to throw away.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-1 West Ham v Man City West Ham fans must be so frustrated because as their team keep beating the big teams but lose to the smaller ones, yet they are still seventh. Unfortunately, Andy Carroll is injured again and they are trying to bring in another striker. Worryingly, they are being linked with Mario Balotelli.

Man City have moved to within a point of the top, and must keep winning.

But with West Ham’s current record, they need to be aware of a potential banana skin. They have a strong squad but still look light in defence without Vincent Kompa-

ny, making them vulnerable to counter-attacks.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-1 Everton v Swansea Everton are another one of those frustrating teams who turn up against the big clubs but go missing against the lesser sides. They will have been so frustrated with the Chelsea draw as they should have won, but they need to dust themselves down and put that game out of their minds.

Swansea have appointed a new boss in ageing Italian Francesco Guidolin, who has little managerial experience outside of his country. But the “new manager” effect worked as they picked up a win against Watford. This will be a much tougher game, though, and they will spend long periods defending, so their concentration levels will have to be high.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-0 Arsenal v Chelsea This is a massive game for table-toppers Arsenal, and they must be hoping Mezut Ozil is fit.

They struggled to create chances against a tough Stoke defence, and it won’t be any easier this time. But if they play well, they could give Chelsea a real beating.

Chelsea, who are still struggling, were fortunate to pick up a point against Everton. They are just four points above the relegation zone and three teams below them could move in front if results go their way. This is a massive test for the club and could be a season-defining moment if they can secure a muchneeded victory.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-0

Frank is the toast again IT was another week of excellent Premier League fixtures with plenty of goals and, as a result, we saw some big fixtures and high scores in the Oasis Fm Fantasy league.

This was down to the most-picked players stepping up their games and finding the back of the net, or putting in man-of-the-match performances.

Southampton, Spurs and Man City, who scored 11 goals between them, all had two play-

ers in the point-scoring team of the week.

The rest came from Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Swansea, Chelsea and Newcastle. Top performer was Sergio Aguero, with 16 points.

At the top of the league, the front-runners didn’t score that well and we saw a change. Frank Devaney’s Baines on Toast reclaimed top spot, opening a 17-point lead as they moved on to a 1,244 total.

Neil’s Gooners, managed by Neil Lobban,

dropped to second with 1,227, and Trevor Passingham’s Passo Utd are still third, on 1,213.

Roscoe’s Wanderers had a good week, storming up to sixth in the table after recording 70 points. They are 47 points behind the league leaders, but that is by no means an insurmountable gap, so watch the table carefully.

Team of the Week was a surprise because the honours went to Dave Bradley’s Salsa Boys, who are fifth from bot-

tom.

However, they came in with 90 points and, what is even more impressive is that 70 were scored by just four players: Petr Cech with 10, Cesc Fabregas 13, Ashley Williams 15 and a real captain’s performance from Sergio Aguero, with 32 points.

Well done Dave - the only way is up!
