Arona Mayor’s police pledge Continued from Front We understand there wasn’t a single Arona police vehicle on the streets of the borough last Saturday night. This stunning news, the first time such an event has occurred for 35 years, has led to some serious questions being raised at the highest levels of local government. The lack of a single patrol in the streets was said to be down to lack of staff. By law, the only two officers who turned up for the graveyard shift had to remain in the Arona police headquarters. This is well away from the coastal and tourist areas, as well as the likes of Valle San Lorenzo and Cabo Blanco. And you can only imagine how busy the streets of Los Cristianos and Las Americas are on a Saturday night. According to law, a police headquarters cannot be left without supervision, and a policeman cannot go out alone on patrol. The presence of just two staff in Arona was confirmed by the municipality. However, it is believed that four officers were on the shift’s rota, and there was a request to raise this, via an overtime payment, to five. But many citizens will suggest that even five officers is not enough for a Saturday night. According to sources, two officers called in sick and a third (presumably the petitioned fifth officer) did not attend because he had to work on Sunday morning. And
officers are also not permitted to work back-toback shifts. The startling revelation was compounded by the news that there were just nine officers down to cover the weekend police duties. Workforce sources say there is a lack of interest in working some shifts because no extra allowances are paid for night hours, weekends or holidays. So they earn the same for a regular Monday-toFriday morning stint as those in the “less-comfortable” shifts. Officially, there are 120 local police officers. Seven are currently on secondment, and there are 32 on sick-leave. This week, Canarian Weekly asked Arona Mayor Jose Julian Mena (pictured) about the police problem, and he assured us it wouldn’t happen again. “This was a complete one-off,” he said. “Different problems happened at the same time. It has taken a long time, seven months, for us to get to the bottom of everything (since he took charge as Mayor). “Next month, when we can finalise the budget, I can tell you there will be more security. There will be more police. There will be more money for police.” He added. “This event was a singular, unique problem. There were many mix-ups. Dates were confused in the calendar. It was a one-off!” Mena was visibly embarrassed when Canar-
ian Weekly asked him about this incident and, apart from the promise of more funding, he also revealed: “We are working on making some changes in the police department. “There will be more policemen, and policewomen on the street. There will be more police cars and police vehicles. Also, in Spain, there are meetings between National Police, Guardia Civil and Local Police. This hasn’t happened in Arona for 18 years - 18 years! “Last month that finally happened ... all the security people getting together. This is very important. Security is very important for us because we are a big city. I will do everything I can to make this place safe, as that is most important thing for me.” With the Los Cristianos carnival just around the corner, it will interesting to see how quickly
the changes are made. A shortage of police officers is not just an Arona problem. The number of Guardia Civil officers responsible for policing the South of Tenerife is at a “worryingly low level”, according to the union representing officers, the Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC). Recently, union officials claimed that staffing levels must be increased immediately to cover an overloaded burden on the police force. The AUGC believes the current squad of guards is insufficient to meet the needs of the main station, based in Playa de Las Americas. This covers the entire municipality of Arona ,and the headquarters of Granadilla, which covers San Miguel, Granadilla and Arico. In the Las Americas base, there are just 66 officers to cover an of-
ficial population of 56,326. And, of course, that total doesn’t include holiday-makers. In a statement at the end of last year, the AUGC in Santa Cruz demanded the number of officers be increased in southern Tenerife as a matter of urgency. The union estimated that the number of staff employed in these units is insufficient to meet the needs of citizens. A spokesperson said: “It’s wrong. Staffing levels have remained the same over the last few years, yet the population has expanded. The demands for security is increasing and there is only so much we can do.” The AUGC union believes that “in the main post in Las Americas, 66 agents are left to cover a registered population of 56,326 people. “This is not counting the large, floating
population in this popular tourist town. As it stands, just on resident figures, we have one policeman assigned to cover up to 853 people.” And just last month, Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez stressed the need for more police officers to add to his borough’s security resources. “We must respond to a reality, which is not only to serve the 50,000 registered people who live here but also the 150,000 daily visitors to Costa Adeje,” he said. “We are at a particularly delicate moment because society faces many challenges to its security forces and general peace. We have been entrusted to not fail.” The Mayor later claimed that more resources, both human and material, were required - not only to give more strength to their own local police but also to increase the numbers of National Police and Guardia Civil. “Over the past years, and the dawn of the crisis, we have had an increase in crime in tourist areas,” said Miguel Rodríguez. “It is our duty to try to alleviate this situation, to ensure the welfare of both residents and visitors.” The Adeje Mayor added: “After all, we are talking about our main economic engine, and it is our duty to do everything in our power to provide a true picture of security.”

Mayor’s pledge to Arona: Blue Flags here we come! NEW Arona Mayor Jose Julian Mena is on a mission to return the Blue Flags to the beaches, and he has taken the first stride to achieving this.
He has reinstated a permanent lifeguard service, which is essential to the area if it is to regain the flag honour. There will now be surveillance, rescue and assistance on the coastal areas, as well as universal accessibility. The new contract runs for two years and has a budget of nearly 780,000 euros. The new monitoring, rescue and assistance service features new bathrooms, which are adapted for people with mobility problems. And, of course, the lifeguards who will be on call from sun-up to sunrise. After nearly three years of Arona being without these essentials, Mayor Mena said: “This is a very important service for any accessible tourist town, and especially on beaches that receive tens of thousands of
people each year. “In addition, the Blue Flags and other certificates are something of which the Arona public are proud. These mean the quality of standards should be a priority. Step by step, we’re returning our town to its good name.”
He added: “I want the scandals of the last few years to be overcome, and all efforts are dedicated to work for the welfare of the development of Arona.” The beaches of Las Vistas, Los Cristianos and El Camison were all manned by their new lifeguards this week. The staff include a ser-
vice co-ordinator and roving lifeguards, who will work all the beaches. This service is essential to recovering the Blue-Flag status on the municipality’s beaches, and also to comply with environmental quality standards and Universal Accessibility certification. This last document
confirms that the beaches can facilitate properly those people with mobility problems. These accreditations were withdrawn in 2013, following the termination of the previous concessionaire’s contract. Jose Luis Gomez and Yurena García, Councillors of Environment and
Beaches, told the press that the documentation for obtaining Blue Flags had already been submitted. The Mayor added: “The Las Vistas beach is one of the most-visited in Spain by people who are elderly or disabled, which is why we have attached great importance to the services for persons with disabilities. “We were very concerned about the lack of a stable rescue service. This has been an ordeal for the town, and the people do not deserve it. So we focused on solving this problem since the takeover, as we return Arona to where it should be because, historically, it has been one of the most accessible bathing areas of Spain.” The new rescue areas will be stocked with amphibious chairs and crutches, a harness crane, floating rings, life-jackets and other life-saving equipment. There is also a rescue jet-ski, a quad surveillance vehicle and a 4x4 with a tilting rear load, plus top-of-the-range stretchers adapted for water rescue, emergency lighting and first-aid and semi-automatic external defibrillators.
For spuds’ sake, food? bring it on let it pour down Fast AMONG the EuOUR recordbreaking weather this winter is great for the holiday-makers, tourists and icecream salesmen. But the hot, sunny, dry days come at a price.
Narvay Quintero, Canary Islands’ Agriculture Minister, says the “lack of rain is disrupting agricultural production in the islands”. He also confirmed: “If the drought continues, potato production could be reduced by up to 60% in some places.” Quintero issued the warning to the Canary Islands Parliament, although he admitted the
agricultural sector was not alarmed - just yet, anyway. The statement, at the request of PP Deputy Leader Tavío Cristina, was a report on the Programme of Action for the industry and, also, what aid or compensation could be put in place. Quintero said the Parliament has two million euros set aside for this unusual problem and that the State or Spanish Government would match the same sum if necessary. He also noted that farmers in the region were still owed an eyewatering 26 million euros by the Spanish Government, but said his department understood that the funds would be passed on soon.
ropeans who spend the least on fast food are Spaniards, reveals a new study by the EAE Business School, which has analysed our 2014 eating habits.
But people in the Canaries, the Balearic Islands and even Madrid spend the most on eating junk - 98 euros, 61 and 50 per inhabitant per year, respectively - attributed by the study to the high volume of tourism in these areas.. Each person in Spain spends an average total of 42.60 euros a
year on fast food, with only Italians spending even less in Europe. The reasons for the low figure are twofold, according to report author Marta Riera. “The fast-food market is smaller in Spain than in the rest of Europe,” she said. “And we are also more aware of the importance of consuming healthy products; we have the Mediterranean diet, and we make less use of
these kinds of places.” Yet Spaniards spend more at each restaurant visit. The average sum spent in a Spanish fast-food restaurant is 4.26 euros - almost double that in the UK and Germany, and triple the cost in the US. Residents in Extremadura, La Rioja, Valencia and Aragon spend the least: between 2030 euros a year. Between 2008 and 2014, fast-food spending in Spain rose by a modest 5.73%, but the study predicts the sum will shoot up by around 50% in the next five years. That’s down to the economic recovery, new and healthier product lines, homedelivery services, high-
er prices and more fast-food outlets. Hamburger, pizza and sandwich joints are the most popular venues with Spaniards, with burger chain McDonald’s leading the sector with a 40% market share and around 500 restaurants. I It is followed by Burger King, sandwich chains Pans & Co and Rodilla, and KFC. Combined, these five companies account for 74% of the Spanish fast-food market. Worldwide, the Japanese spend the most on fast food - an average 231.35 euros a year, per inhabitant, followed by Americans and Australians. Indians spend the least: an average 9.30 euros annually.

Brit held after wife strangled A BRITISH car salesman, arrested by Spanish police after his wife was found strangled to death with a mobile-phone charger cord, said she was taking part in a sex game that went horribly wrong.
Warren Lyttle, a 50-year-old expat said Lisa Jane choked to death during a sadomasochistic role-play she proposed in their sixth-floor apartment
near Magaluf on Saturday. Mr Lyttle made the shocking claim during a private court quiz on Sunday evening, a day after confessing that he killed her during a phone call to emergency services. Police confirmed that 49-year-old Lisa Jane, who flew to Majorca on Thursday from her home in Kilburn, north-west London, for a week’s holiday, was strangled with a mobile-phone charger cord. Lyttle’s claim that she died in a tragic accident failed to convince investigating
judge Jose Luis Castro, who remanded him in custody on suspicion of his wife’s homicide after studying police reports. The judicial investigation will continue while the Brit is held in a prison near Palma, the island’s capital. The family of Lisa Jane, a mother of one, are also said to have told Spanish police that Lyttle, who had lived in Majorca for about a decade, had a turbulent relationship with his wife, who spent most of her time in Britain. Police say they have evidence contradicting
Lyttle’s claims, pointing to Lisa Jane being strangled during a row over money. A well-placed source confirmed: “Warren Lyttle told the judge his wife died during a sex game. He also claimed that she had proposed the role-play which, he said, led to her death. “He confirmed in court that he had confessed to killing her in the phone call he made on Saturday morning to the emergency services. “But he told the judge it was an accident and things just got out of hand.”
112 service essential for battered women THE Emergency Service CECOES 112 attended almost 14,000 cases involving violence to women in the Canary Islands, last year, of which over 3,578 were labelled “emergency”, or “imminent danger to the victim”.
Canaries Deputy Prime Minister Patricia Hernandez revealed the details on a visit to the operating room of 112 and the emergency unit for Abused Women, based in Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas.
Ms Hernandez, accompanied by Justice Minister Aaron Afonso and Marián Franquet, Director of the Canary Islands Institute of Equality, described the 112 emergency unit as “a crucial resource that saves lives.” She added: “This service also provides an accompaniment, a resource of finding accommodation for women and their children - an action for imminent attention. “Our concern is not only to end gender violence but to go as far as the cause itself that motivates this violence, which is machismo.” Ms Hernandez, who is also the Canary Islands’
Employment Minister, believes that to tackle this problem, sexism must be fought and eradicated. “It is essential at national level that a state pact against gender violence is made because we are talking of thousands of women killed in recent decades in Spain,” she said. “This requires the participation of all political parties in all institutions.” She also pointed out the role of families and friends, saying: “About 10,000 calls were made by relatives, neighbours or friends of the victims and not by the women themselves, demonstrating the importance
of the whole society to tackle the problem.”

Project to combat all the lonely souls THE battle against loneliness is fought all over the world - and here in the Canary Islands, the Government is throwing money at the problem this year.
Patricia Hernandez Deputy Prime Minister, has confirmed a Government project to combat loneliness in elderly people, for which half-a-million euros will be spent. Ms Hernandez told a press conference: “It is very important to work
with the elderly of the Canary Islands. My department has set as a priority a plan against their loneliness, and the half-million euros allocated is just the beginning. “We want a plan to incorporate actions for our old folk to have an active, dynamic, happy life in their later years.” The last Canaries’ census recorded 306,270 over-65s living here. That represents 15.20% of the Tenerife population; La Palma (20.08%); Fuerteventura (8.42%); El Hierro (22.31%); Lanzarote (10.60%); Gran Canaria (14.51%) and 20.84% in La Gomera.

Chickenpox jabs back on for kids he said. “Once all the THE Ministry of Health is completing a U-turn with a resumption of chickenpox vaccinations for the Canary Islands at the end of March.
The department initially said there would be no programme. But it has been persuaded otherwise following pressure from paediatricians and scientific societies. Ricardo Redondas, the Regional Government’s general director of Public Health, confirmed that all children born after 1st January 2015 about 16,300 minors - are to be vaccinated. “The vaccine purchase has been agreed, and we will begin the jabs once they have arrived, in the coming weeks,”
logistics are in place we will start, hopefully, before 1st April. The doses will be in all health centres in the archipelago.” Redondas also confirmed: “Our department is not aware of any increase in the cases of chickenpox in recent months in the Islands.” According to an Epidemiological Surveillance System report: “In 2015 there were some 5,000 cases. This is similar to the previous year, and below the average of the past five years.” The first dose of chickenpox vaccine will be for the little ones aged between 12-15 months of age. A second wave of booster jabs will follow for those between three and four years. This programme, costing 333,000 euros, will come from the Canarian Government’s health budget.

Golden setback for the Princess SPAIN’S underfire Princess Cristina has been stripped of her Barcelona Gold Medal after going on on trial for tax fraud earlier this month.
A meeting of the city’s left-wing Council’s Deputy Mayor’s office started the administrative process to remove the city’s top award from the Princess, telling her she should not lay claim to the honour, or be referred to as “her most excellent lady” with immediate effect. Gerardo Pisarello, Deputy Mayor of the Left-wing BComú coalition, said: “No merit exists by which the Princess could be deserving of this honour.” He added that he would have preferred the royal to have handed the medal back of her own volition once she had been accused in the corruption case
centred on the Nóos Institute. The company, formerly run by her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, was, allegedly, used to embezzle public funds. Princess Cristina, 50, lived in Barcelona from 1992 to 2009, working for the charitable foundation of La Caixa bank. She was awarded the city’s Gold Medal in 1997. While the Left-wing and Catalan nationalist councillors said they were in no way prejudg-
ing the outcome of the ongoing trial involving the Princess, representatives of the centrist Ciudadanos and conservative Popular Party decided to abstain, based on the presumption of innocence. “What do we do if she is acquitted?” asked Ciudadanos Councillor Paco Sierra. Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau sparked controversy last summer when she had a bust of King Juan Carlos, the current
Spanish monarch’s father, removed from the Council’s assembly hall. This month Councillors in the Catalan town of Torredembarra were threatened with prosecution for displaying a passport-sized portrait of King Felipe, while Catalonia’s new regional leader, Carles Puigdemont, pointedly avoiding swearing allegiance to the King on taking up his post. The trial of Princess Cristina, Mr Urdangarin and 16 other defendants started in Palma de Mallorca on 11th January. The Princess faces two charges of being an accomplice to tax fraud, but her lawyers have asked the three-judge panel to exonerate her before she is cross-examined, arguing that she has been accused by a private prosecution only and not the Spanish state. The court is in recess until 9th February 9 while the judges consider this and other final appeals.
Strikes threatening to disrupt our carnivals
WE live in a world where food is becoming desirable for gangs and criminals. The high market price of Olive Oil has seen a plethora of thefts around the continent.
And this week, another high-end product was snatched in Tenerife. A grower in El Rosario, in the North, was hit … and hit hard! These people graft, week in, week out to make a living, and he reported to police the theft of over 1,000 kilos of avocados from a farm, which also saw the disappearance of several beehives. The market value of the produce is a cool 2,500 euros. The man was aware of
the heist on Saturday afternoon, when he and his son pitched up to do some maintenance on the hives they have on the farm, located in the area known as the Camino El Escaño. On discovering the missing hives, he alerted police and then searched the rest of his property. It was then he discovered that his 100 avocado trees had been shorn of their produce. The trees are in full season and the grower said the fruit theft could have taken place between last Thursday and Friday. The luckless man said the trees were not insured, although the hives were. The local Mayor has asked for the public’s help, especially as it is not the first time one of the farms in his borough has been raided.
IT’S carnival season in Tenerife, and the workers’ unions are set to cause problems during this party time. Iberia workers in Tenerife, as well as the staff of Aviapartner, have voted for strike action in a few weeks. As it stands, they will walk out on the 12th, 13th and 14th February, coinciding with the second weekend of the Santa Cruz Carnival. The State Co-ordinator of the Air Handling Sector (CESHA) says the problems facing the airline industry in the Canary Islands are widespread, “and we are supporting workers”. He added: “They have an increased workload and increased job stress, among other
damaging factors. Therefore, it is logical that several companies in the sector are experiencing problems.” The planned strike by Iberia workers came after the company “refused” to talk with workers to meet the demands of the workforce. In December, according to CESHA: “The union convened a strike because of the deterioration of working conditions experienced by the staff of this company, which assumed a
significant increase in workloads at Tenerife South Airport. “The lack of foresight on the part of company management in the organisation of work, and the provision of adequate material resources, recurring failure of the acquired rights of employees and continuing contracts to evade the law, have created a climate of permanent work stress that needs immediate resolution.” It is one thing announcing strikes, and another to actually walk out.
Unlike in France, it is quite common for this sort of thing to be nothing more than sabrerattling. And to prove the point, almost, union leaders have promised to meet with Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo. For its part, Iberia claims it has spent a month waiting to meet union reps in an attempt to open a negotiation process. Meanwhile, in the case of Aviapartner, the strike days are planned for the 12th and 13th February. They were called after nine employees were sacked because of what unions call “dismissal without justification”. Officials added: “The union considers this action of the company as an attack on the freedom of association of its workforce.”

Tourism sector pleads for help “HELP us to be more helpful.” That is the message from the hard-done-by tourism sector to the Canarian Government.
The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
No shortcuts TENERIFE had a successful Fitur convention in Madrid last week, and the 88 members of the British Travel Writers Guild seemed to enjoy their annual conference there.
They are writers, photographers and broadcasters and their work is read or viewed all over the world. The UK national press were represented, and even the BBC pitched up. One of the themes of the week was how much Tenerife had improved as a holiday destination. We have always had the climate and the visitors. But did we truly get what the tourist of today is looking for? Lots of Spanish destinations stuck with their dated beliefs, but our leaders are shrewder. Over the last 20 years, they have slowly been tweaking and improving. Many of their decisions have been highly controversial. Madness was a common word banded around. “They are killing the place”, would be another. But as the figures are showing, they have been vindicated. And in
spades. I guess most of us are scared of change; it’s maybe the islander mentality. Scared of killing what we believed was a golden goose. However, if you are standing still you are not moving forward. Brave decisions are exactly that. I thought of this when I was interviewing new Arona Mayor Jose Julian Mena this week. You will be able to read about his vision in the next issue of Canarian Weekly. He has a massive job on his hands and, as he admitted to me, the mess is far far deeper than he originally thought. It has taken him seven long months to form his ruling committee, and there will be more ministers. They will work longer hours, for less money, in a quest to get Arona back on its feet. Mena knows he will have to make some strong decisions. Unpopular decisions. But decisions that will move Arona out of the dark days. And if he ever needs reminding of what he is trying to achieve, he has only to glance west. Adeje is a beacon for what can be achieved. And, trust me, Mena knows this.

Insufficient resources, lack of adaptation to the sector and gaps in language teaching are just some of the deficits the Court of Accounts of the Canary Islands (ACC) detected in the annual Vocational Education and Tourism au-
dit report, presented to the regional parliament. The study findings place particular emphasis on some of the core problems, and suggests some easy-to-administer solutions. In particular, states the report, the need to promote the learning of foreign languages, “which is the key to the whole issue of tourism in the islands.” The Canaries’ Parliament will now chew over the five main resolutions. This includes the report’s recommendations on the languages
problem as it proposed “concrete measures such as compulsory education to be adopted, and an immersion in the most common languages of English and German”. In another resolution, it says it is advisable “to provide sufficient and adequate budgetary programmes related to tourism. This includes Professional Training, so we can provide students with the requirements of the real world. This can be assessed in final results. “Also, schools must
have vocational training facilities and equipment necessary and appropriate, to enable students to acquire the necessary skills of the qualifications offered.” Another of the report’s suggestions is better training, more in-depth tourism studies and a better understanding of the labour market needs. It adds: “We must conduct periodic reviews to determine the adequacy, or otherwise, of the training offer to the demands of the Canarian tourist sector.”
Export of tomatoes squashed by rivals CANARIAN tomato exports have nosedived by a stunning 82% in the last 15 years. And the fall in local-tomato exports this Millennium is a real cause for concern.
Some 352,000 tons were harvested in 2000, while this figure was down to about 63,000 tons last year. These statistics were presented as the industry marked the 130th anniversary of fruitgrowing in the Canaries. At the beginning of 2000, there were 956 producers with about 3,400 hectares for growth. Today there are some 320 producers and 720 hectares. The number of companies has decreased from about 70 to 15, and with it the 25,000 decline of direct and indirect workers to the current 10,000 total. There are a couple of reasons for the decline. The first is the
competitiveness of the market, with Morocco recently becoming a major player. And, with it having a similar climate as ours, it comes down to good old-fashioned economics. In Morocco, cheap labour is exactly that. Local pickers are paid 20 cents an hour, while in the archipelago, the same worker earns about six euros per hour. This is replicated in overheads, with the
costs of water, materials, fuel, tax and so on. The tomato ceremony was attended by Canary Islands’ Agriculture Minister Narvay Quintero and regional parliament President Carolina Darias, together with Miguel Hidalgo and Juan Estártico, respective Primary Sector directors of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura Agriculture, plus FedExAceto President Jose Juan Bonny. They were all in agree-
ment about the need to address the future, so that the tomato industry can recover. Currently, Canarian tomatoes are grown on Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, and Quintero, said: “The tomato has managed to be associated with the name of the Canary Islands for a very long time, and it used to put us on the map. “We honour the men and women who have dedicated their work to the field. But today we need a fair price, and the tomato sector is in need of more stability.” He added: “I urge entrepreneurs, institutions and locals to get involved. Eat local. Buy local. Also, I call on the European Union to realise that the tomato industry is of significant importance for the Canaries. We want to avoid the disloyalty of other countries’ industry.” That was a not-sosubtle hint to the EU to levy a quota on foreign, non-EU tomato imports to protect our produce.

Quake shakes up a city’s residents AN early-morning earthquake in the Gibraltar strait, some 48 miles off the small Spanish enclave of Melilla and 100 miles south-east of Malaga, shook residents and damaged buildings on Monday.
The 6.3-magnitude tremor, said to be at a 20-mile depth, had its epicentre about 48 miles north-west of Melilla. It occurred at 5.22am local time and was followed by several smaller tremors in the next 90 minutes. Spanish TV showed chunks of concrete from apartment buildings on the ground, and shocked residents running outside in their night attire. Melilla official Isidro Gonzalez told Cadena Ser radio: “We haven’t detected anything very serious, although some high buildings have cracks.” Emergency services received more than 200
calls from people warning of damage to properties, and schools were closed to enable the buildings to be inspected. Parts of Melilla experienced power cuts, but electricity was soon restored to those areas. Emergency services in the southern Spanish region of Andalucia said they had received 250 calls from alarmed residents. The tremors and after-shocks were felt throughout the region, especially in the cities of Cordoba, Seville and Granada, but there were no reports of injuries. The earthquake came one day after an even stronger, 6.8-magnitude tremor hit southern Alaska, where several neighbourhoods were evacuated after a gas explosion damaged four homes. It happened 160 miles south-west of Anchorage in the ocean, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre was not anticipating a destructive force, and stressed there was no threat to Hawaii.

Home sales up 22% during the summer CANARIAN notaries were kept busy last summer as home sales soared. During the third quarter of 2015, there was an amazing 22.6% increase, compared with the same 2014 period, with an average 6.7% price improvement.
Nationally, sales rose 14.7% in the third quarter and all regions, except Navarra, showed gains, while the price went u p
2.7% in this period over the previous year. According to the General Council of Notaries’ statistics, the final quarter of the year is likely to bring more moderate gains in the number of purchases. However, this does not tarnish 2015, in which the sales recovery continued. Seven communities, which represented one-third of the purchases made in the quarter, exceeded the national average: Murcia (40.4%), La Rioja (34.1%), Cantabria (29.4%), Canarias (22.6 %), Cataluña (19.3%), Aragon (17.7%) and the Basque Country
(16.1%). With regard to prices, they highlighted increases in Galicia (13.3%), Balearic Islands (9.3%), Canarias (6.7%) and, to a lesser extent, Valencia, Aragon, Madrid and Cantabria. Below the average 2.7% stood Andalusia, Asturias, Cataluña and Castillo-La Mancha. There were falls of between 2.5% and 4.3% in Extremadura, the Basque Country, Murcia and Castilla y Leon, and much bulkier ones in the case of Rioja (-10.6%) and Navarra, where they recorded -16.4%. Mortgage loans for home purchases rose 28.5% in the third quarter, with increases in all communities, linking seven
quarters and promotions. The exception was again Navarra, which recorded an annual decline of new business of 25.3% for the second time. In terms of the average number of mortgages for the whole country, an increase of 4.9% in the third quarter was seen - up to 126,490 euros. Most communities showed increases between 3% and 10% in 2015. Meanwhile, the number of newly-established companies stood at 20,420. Seven communities reported the greatest rises, including those of Aragon (10.6%), La Rioja (8.9%) and Cataluña (8.7%). But 10 communities lost out badly, particularly Navarra (-18.9% ), Extremadura (-14.5%) and Galicia (-10.7%).
The brain drain BY 2020, Spain will have almost two million people in higher education unable to find a desired job or career, according to a study by consultancy firm Randstad.
This means the country will have a high deficit of “talent” because of the huge imbalance
Overseas workers at a peak THE number of foreigners affiliated to the Spanish Social Security System rose by 5.6% in the Canary Islands last year. This means there are now 81,790 here, which is 4,369 more than in 2014. And, according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, the figure was
above the 5.0% national average rise. A breakdown of numbers shows there were 43,929 contributors from European Union (EU) countries, and 37,862 from elsewhere. By province, there are 44,215 in Las Palmas and 37,575 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In addition, 61,804
registered in the general regime, 19,526 as autonomous, 3,302 at home, 2,346 in the agricultural system and 460 at sea. In terms of gender distribution, 43,713 are men and 38,078 women. It is the second successive year in which the number of foreigners has grown since 2007.
between the level of education and business needs. It is not the first time employers are demanding a greater connection between the university and the labour market to achieve a better balance between what the employer demands and how young people are coming out of higher education. There seems little doubt that those in higher education may not be prepared for the workplace. In the Canary Islands, 66.9% of people in higher education will fail to find a suitable job after completing their studies. This compares drastically with higher employment rates in other parts of the country. In Cataluña, 82.8% will leave higher education and find suitable positions. And it is a similar story in the Balearic Islands (81.1%) and
Aragón (80.9%). According to the INE, the 2010 graduates with higher employment rates in 2014 studied Electronics, Engineering, Medicine, Engineering in Automation and Industrial Electronics, Aerospace Engineering and Engineering of Naval and Oceanic. The lower rates of employment were involved in French Studies, Diploma in Maritime Navigation, Arabic Studies, Art, History and Sea Science. In fact, you can go from 0% of the unemployment rate in Electronic Engineering or 0.6% in Medicine, 45.4%
of French Studies, at Fine Arts 40% or 38% of licence history. Furthermore, the autonomous communities who fee their job is appropriate for their skill levels are Navarra (81.8%), Madrid (79.2%) and Cataluña (77.8%). Conversely, Extremadura (66.6%), La Rioja (68.9%) and Canaries (68.9%) had the lowest values. According to the Randstad analysis, Spain, Italy and Poland are the European countries most prone to a high deficit of talent, and this will continue over the next two decades.

No wonder flying’s a pain in the back! SO - C A L L E D “normal” plane seats are simply not big enough to cater for the modern traveller, according to an expert from Barcelona.
Jordi Porta, of the National Physical Education Institute of Catalonia (INEFC Barcelona) and a member of the International Society for the Advance of Kinanthropometry (IAK) - the study of the human form - said: “A normal person can’t fit in a normal airline seat.” The size and weight of humans, particularly in the West, has increased “significantly,” according to Porta, which, he said, was something airlines had failed to take into account when designing new aircraft. And Pablo Wagner, a physiotherapist and researcher at INEFC, and an expert on the ergonomics of tourist-class airline seats, added: “Anybody taller than 174cm can suffer problems when travelling by plane.” Most Spanish men
born after 1970 are taller than 176cm, and airline seats are uncomfortable for anybody of above average height, partly because they are short, and partly because they are spaced too close together. The average distance between the inside back of the seat to the rear of the seat in front is around 80cm, although, said Wagner: “In some planes, it is as little as 74cm.” Unsurprisingly, lowcost airlines are the stingiest when it comes to leg-room. A recent New York Times article noted that the distance had shrunk by 10% in the last two decades. As for width, most airline seats measure around 43cm. “The increase in the number of seats per plane, so as to improve profits, could be creating a series of problems related to posture and overloading muscles,” said Wagner. And María Dolores Cabañas, of ISAK, believes frequent flyers are particularly vulnerable to a range of health issues. So-called tourist-class syndrome has been known to produce thrombosis
during or after flights Proximity between seats is one of the main complaints passengers make about airline travel, says Heidemarie Hinninghofen, of Germany’s Tübingen University Hospital. She cites “difficulties in getting up to move around, breathing difficulties, digestive problems and circulation”. Each airline uses particular types of aircraft. The placement of seats, the distance between rows, and how many passengers there are in each class varies. But Spain has no laws establishing the maximum number of seats per plane, or the mini-
Renault recall over harmful emissions CAR manufacturer Renault, under the spotlight over high levels of harmful emissions, is recalling 15,000 new cars.
The move comes after tests showed emission levels from some of the French company’s vehicles were too high. And three of the firm’s sites were raided by fraud investigators last week. The searches led to billions of euros being wiped off its market value, after fears that it could be another scandal similar to that at Volkswagen. Renault has promised to come up with a “tech-
nical plan” to bring down the level of emissions from its vehicles. French Energy Minister Segolene Royal said Renault was not the only car company in France to break the rules on carbon dioxide and nitrogen emissions, but she did not name the others involved. She said the tests needed to be based on “real driving conditions” and not those of special testing facilities. It has been suggested that the emission readings are much lower in laboratory-style conditions. Ms Royal added: “Renault has committed to recalling a certain number of vehicles - more
than 15,000 - to check them and adjust them correctly so the filtration system works, even when it is very hot or when it is below 17 degrees, because that’s when the filtration system no longer worked.” Renault sales director Thierry Koskas said during a presentation on the group’s 2015 sales performance: “We are working on a technical plan, which should allow us to cut emissions.” When asked how the test results differed from those conducted under real conditions, he said: “Renault did not cheat … we are not using any software or other methods.”
mum distance between them. Gonzalo Saco, of INEFC, said: “The companies include the seat, the cushion and the structure of the seat in the measurement, although they shouldn’t, given that we’re supposed to be talking about usable space. “It’s a way of hiding the
data to prevent us from taking any kind of action.” Porta believes that airline seat designs are still based on the measurements of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, which takes its name from an architect born in the first century BC. “We’re 2,000 years out of date,” he adds, mockingly. Antonio Carrascosa, a paediatrician at Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, said: “Improved living standards, the disappearance of many infectious diseases and access to more food have accelerated the growth of children in developed countries.” His work shows that the parameters of youngsters aged up to 24 have increased in the last 20 years. The INEFC, ISAK, and the Spanish Sports Med-
icine Federation, have teamed up to develop the Pitch-Salud project, aimed at establishing new average parameters for Spanish men, based on 43 variables including weight, size and leg length. Saco calculates that the distance between seats should be between 83.8cm-88.9cm. “We’re hoping that this research will help bring about a change in airline rules,” said Porta. Maria Cabañas added: “Shorter passengers have no foot-rests, taller people’s knees are up against the seat in front, and overweight people are wedged in.” Meanwhile, all passengers can do to reduce discomfort and possible dangers to their health is to continue complaining to the airlines, as well as exercising during their flight.

A BAN on pollution- spouting diesel cars from Madrid city centre will be in force from 2020, if Mayor Manuela Carmena’s Environment Chief has his way.
A determined Inés Sabanés said: “We will have to take some time with this and explain it properly. There are currently measures to deal with high pollution levels and access restrictions in the city centre. “But there will come a time when polluting cars won’t be able to circulate, and restrictive measures will have to be taken in the entire downtown area.” Paris has already announced a ban on all diesel vehicles from 2020, and the decision by the Ahora Madrid administration follows similar moves in other European capitals, including London. There, officials are opting to charge diesel cars a further £9 on top of the £11.50 congestion charge all drivers now have to pay to enter the centre. Spain’s economic cri-

Madrid plans ban on diesel polluters sis has seen the average age of vehicles almost double in Madrid - from 5.7 years in 2008 to 9.3 in 2013 - while nearly 70% of the city’s 4.2 million cars run on diesel. At the same time the Industry Ministry has yet to deliver its planned vehicle categorisation system for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions. Under the proposed system, cars registered prior to 2001 would receive a red label, while diesel vehicles made before 2007 would receive an orange rating. In 2008, Berlin closed off its city centre to all red-labelled cars - some 100,000 vehicles. Former Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, of the conservative Popular Party (PP), had announced he would limit the circulation of vehicles that failed to receive even a red rating from 2010. But his plan was never enforced.
Madrid has been exceeding the NO2 threshold set by the European Union since the 2010 creation of the monitoring system. Besides the serious health issues raised, the city could also face a hefty fine from Brussels if it does not address the problem. Sabanés also announced that City Hall was considering plans to extend public bikerental schemes in the city beyond the current BiciMad service, which, she said, was coming up short, as well as introducing parking meters to areas outside the M-30 beltway. She added that plans were also in hand to pedestrianise more parts of the city centre. By 2017, vehicles belonging to local residents only will be able to enter secondary roads in the heart of the capital. The city recently approved stringent new
anti-pollution rules, set to go into force on Monday (1st Feb), which could see all vehicles banned from entering the downtown area on days of persistent, acute air pollution. Residents of the Span-
ish capital are already familiar with the effects of the air-improvement plan, since drivers were instructed to observe 70km/h speed limits on the M-30 and other access roads on several occasions in the autumn.
Additionally, parking in downtown metered areas was banned altogether for a couple of days, the exceptions being delivery trucks, ambulances, taxis and residents with parking permits.
Potent booze leaves clear head next day SCIENTISTS in North Korea are said to have invented a potent alcoholic drink which leaves boozers free of hangovers. The state-owned Pyongyang Times newspaper says that experts toiled for years before making a breakthrough, when they replaced the sugar in Koryo Liquor with “boiled and scorched glutinous rice”. The resulting spirit, made with ginseng and organic rice, has an al-
cohol content of 30%40% and “is highly appreciated by experts and lovers as it is suave, and causes no hangover”. The newspaper says the drink’s “subtle blend ... of the scorched starch, with the sweetness of glucose, cannot be produced with any spices”. The “scorched glutinous rice” is also said to contain essential amino acids, inorganic substances and vita-
mins, and helps the body break down fats - making it a likely favourite of dictator Kim Jong-Un. The liquor has, reportedly, won a series of accolades in the North Korean food and drink industry - including a top ranking at the fifth national liquor exhibition, first place in the food sector of the 30th national scientific and technological festival and a 15th December Medal of Quality.

Apple’s growing pains APPLE has experienced the slowest iPhone sales growth since the product’s 2007 launch. And the company warns sales will fall for the first time later this year.
The US tech giant sold 74.8 million iPhones in its fiscal first quarter, compared with 74.5 million a year ago. But Apple said revenue for the next quarter would be between $50bn and $53bn, which falls below the $58bn it reported for the same period a year ago. This would mark Apple’s first fall in revenues since the iPhone launch.. Despite first-quarter iPhone sales being below the 75 million expected by analysts, it was still a record quarter for the company. Apple revenue in the three months to 26th December was $75.9bn and net profit was $18.4bn, both of which are the company’s highest-ever recorded. Sales of iPhones accounted for 68% of the company’s revenue in
the period. Any other company announcing record profits and revenues might expect a warm welcome from investors. But because Apple has scaled so many peaks, the concern among shareholders is that the only way is down, and current figures back up those concerns. Sales of the iPhone, the single, most-profitable product any com-
pany has produced, fell flat, basically. Then there’s China - still growing but far more slowly. The iPhone is still an object of desire there, but at a time when Apple says it’s seeing softness in the economy, the attractions of cheaper rivals from local firms like Xiaomi may grow. Of course, the worries about “peak iPhone”
have surfaced before, and pressure is now mounting on Apple to deliver another blockbuster product to keep the profits rolling on. Perhaps the 1,000 engineers rumoured to be working on an Apple Car will come up with an exciting innovation, for which Apple’s fans and investors await with growing impatience. Apple chief Tim Cook credited “all-time record sales of iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple TV” for the performance. But Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said the company was operating in “a very difficult macro-economic environment”. He believes “iPhone units will decline in the quarter” and that the company was not projecting beyond those three months. Mr Maestri partly blamed the strong US dollar for Apple’s flat sales, estimating it had knocked $5bn off the company’s revenues. Apple’s sales in Greater China - defined by the company as China, Hong Kong and Taiwan - rose 14%, but that was much slower than the 70% increase in 2015.
Almond milk might harm young babies SPANISH researchers have warned that parents who give their babies supposedlyhealthy, plant-derived drinks ,such as almond milk instead of real milk, risk damaging their children’s health. The warning came after an 11-month-old was diagnosed with scurvy. The baby, who developed the disease which is extremely rare in developed countries - had been fed solely on an almond milk-based formula made for young babies from the age of around 10 weeks. Although the mixture was meant to include all essential nutrients, researchers from Valencia’s La Fe University hospital concluded that the way it was processed meant the Vitamin C was not effective. Scurvy, for centuries the scourge of mariners deprived of fresh food,
is caused by a deficiency of Vitamin C, which plays a crucial role in the formation of collagen to develop connective tissue. Paediatrician Isidro Vitoria, principal author of the report, said the child was born with a normal body weight of just under 7lb, and had been fed standard formula milk for the first 10 weeks. Then, after the baby had developed a skin rash, a doctor told the parents to switch to the almond-milk mixture. At first, everything seemed to go well and the baby liked his new
milk substitute. At six months, the baby’s mother tried to feed him puréed fruit and vegetable, but he did not take to solid food. Even so, at seven months the baby appeared to be progressing normally, having learned to sit up without support. But a month later, the hospital’s report says: “He showed less interest in interacting and was more unstable when sitting”. At 11 months, the parents and doctors realised there was something wrong when the child refused to support his legs, and cried when his limbs were manipulated. Doctors found that his femurs and spine had suffered fractures, and he was diagnosed with scurvy and a lack of bone mass. The baby was then fed
milk, cereals, fruit and milk, besides Vitamin C and D supplements, bringing his vitamin levels back to normal within a month and allowing him to start walking at 13 months. “When plant-based beverages are the exclusive diet in the first year of life and not consumed as a supplement to formula or breastfeeding, it can result in severe nutritional problems,” concluded Dr Vitoria, in the report published in the US journal Pediatrics. “Manufacturers should indicate that these beverages are inappropriate for infants who consume a Vitamin-C deficient diet.” The British health authorities advise parents that breast-feeding is the healthiest way to nurture a baby for at least the first six months
Shy James Bond star sold up!
SEAN Connery, who first brought British spy James Bond to life on the big screen, sold his Marbella villa in the Nineties through fear of being seen wearing nothing but underwear. A Malaga court heard of the film-star’s dread from a key witness in the so-called Goldfinger case. The Scottish movie legend was alleged to have said: “Those people are not going to see me in my underpants I am leaving Marbella”, in a testimony given by Juan Antonio Roca, Property Adviser to Jesús Gil, flamboyant late Mayor of the Andalusian town. Roca is already serving a 17-year prison sentence for moneylaundering, fraud and receiving bribes as he built up a personal fortune estimated at 200 million euros (£154 million) during the corruption-fuelled reigns of Gil and his successor, Julián Muñoz. Roca, among the accused in the Goldfinger case”, explained that Mr Connery was furious at the spiralling levels of property development around his once-secluded beachside villa, Casa Malibu, and also that Gil, Marbella Mayor between 1991 and 2002, had quoted compliments the actor had once paid the Spanish resort in a political message. Roca said that Mr Connery, now 85, had confronted Gil and repeated his concern over his privacy, saying: “I will not have the neighbours see me in my underwear.” The plot of land on which the Casa Malibu complex stood was put up for sale by Mr Connery and his wife, Micheline Roquebrune, in the late Nineties, and the couple moved to the Bahamas. The property, midway between central Marbella and the nowbooming leisure port of Puerto Banús, was sold in 1999 for £5.5m, with two blocks containing 72 flats being built on the land, despite planning rules which permitted just five homes
on the plot. The complex, originally bought by Mr Connery after marrying Ms Roquebrune in 1975, was eventually sold for an estimated £45m. The court has been shown a photograph of Casa Malibu, flanked by the two apartment blocks before the couple’s old, picturesque, white-walled villa was demolished. Prosecutors believe that Ms Roquebrune, a French-Moroccan painter, colluded with others to fake legal transactions and hide profits from the sale of the property, using tax havens to launder millions of poun Ms Roquebrune, now 86, faces a possible 30-month jail sentence and a fine of up to £16m if found guilty of tax fraud. She has described the Goldfinger case charges against her as “nonsense”. But it is still not clear whether or when Mr Connery’s wife will travel to Spain to face the allegations. The couple were reluctant to co-operate in the pretrial investigation, the examining judge having a threeyear wait for a sworn statement sent to Spain in 2014 by Mr Connery, in which he denied having played any role in the negotiations over the property deal. Allegations of impropriety were then dropped against the James Bond actor, although the investigating judge described his attitude towards the case as “obstructive and ignorant”. Mr Connery had previously denied any links to corrupt Town Hall officials in Marbella, as well as any involvement with firms linked to the alleged multi-millionpound fraud relating to Sir Sean’s former home.

Walk-in police cop it on social media POLICE in Coventry, who have been walking into unlocked homes and tweeting photographs from inside, have been criticised heavily by residents.
The Coventry City Police team have posted the images while on burglary patrol, “making sure life is not being made easy for thieves”. Some of the pictures show houses with unlocked doors or windows, sometimes including street names, while others portray officers standing inside the homes. One photo, of an officer in a hallway, is captioned: “PCSO Smith speaking to a resident off Holyhead Road about door left open.” Another tweet, showing an officer inside the hallway of another home, has the caption: “Another house left open, owner advised, that’s 6 in half hour!! Stop making life easy for thieves.” One image of a security alarm inside a resident’s house said: “Spotted this alarm, great addition to home security, but we were able to walk into its owners home through open door.” Another, showing an officer inside a darkened home, says: “Three house doors in a row left open, victims waiting to happen!” It has led to dozens of people on social media question-
ing their actions. One user, Chris McKee, said: “It seems a daft approach considering how someone could reasonably respond aggressively to the unwarranted intrusion.” Coventry City Police responded to his tweet, saying: “Thanks for your knowledgeable thoughts & wisdom, we will take on board your observations when the relevant situation arises.” Mr McKee added: “I’m not sure where you stand legally, entering a private home without a warrant. Unlocked doors don’t give permission.” User Quendergeer said: “Pretty sure ‘wandering in to make a point’ would receive a very dim view from the ipcc (Independent Police Complaints Commission).” Situations when officers do not need a warrant to enter properties include: dealing with a breach of peace or preventing it; enforcing an arrest warrant; arresting a person or to save a life or prevent serious damage to property. But Ryan Brown tweeted: “It’s not a crime to leave your door unlocked, you’ve entered without asking and now people know they leave they door unlocked.” Shannon said it was “breaking and entering” and added: “It’s not illegal to leave your door unlocked. In many places, it’s abnormal to leave your door locked.” Sheanderthal agreed, saying: “You can’t just
be walking into people’s homes. Its a complete invasion of privacy.” And Niffy1a tweeted: “... if my dog attacks you as you trespass in my house … don’t blame me or him.” The City Police team tweeted at the weekend: “Thanks all for the feedback on one of the burglary prevention tactics. We’ll review based on feedback #socialmediasuccess?” Chief Inspector Helen Kirkman said: “A significant proportion all burglaries in this area - in excess of 25% - are ‘walk-in’ offences, committed by opportunists taking advantage of properties left unsecure. “Neighbourhood police teams have been on patrol to deter such offences, look for suspects, and to offer crime prevention advice to residents. “If they find a door or window left open, I think people would want officers to check everything is OK at that address, and not to just walk on by. “We have had very positive feedback from residents …they are grateful for officers pointing out what they’ve found, and the advice they’re offered.” He added: “We encourage our police teams to be proactive and creative in their use of social media to engage with the public and get messages across. “We haven’t received any complaints from residents but, obviously, we will take on board social media comments.”

Palin joins in Trump circus SARAH Palin, popular ex-governor of Alaska and 2008 Republican Vice -Presidential candidate, is backing Donald Trump’s Republican bid to be US President.
Palin, who was John McCain’s running mate in 2008 before they lost to Barack Obama, asked cheering supporters at an Iowa campaign rally: “Are you ready to stump for Trump?” And despite her retirement from politics, in favour of a media career, she still has an in-
fluential, conservative voice. Announcing her endorsement officially, Palin said Trump was ready to let US troops “kick ISIS ass”. “We are ready for a change,” she told the Ames rally. “He (Trump) is beholden to no one but ‘we, the people’. He is perfectly positioned to let you make America great again.” Trump, the New York businessman with wealth beyond belief, leads the Republican race. He said in a statement that he was “proud” to receive her backing. Palin, he added, was a “trusted conservative”
with a “proven record of being fiscally modest, staunchly pro-life and believes in small government that allows businesses to grow, and freedom to prosper”. While her reputation has diminished since those heady days of 2008 - she was involved in a series of questionable, reality TV shows - she is still popular among conservative Republicans, and is known universally. Her backing could help insulate Mr Trump against charges that he is not a true believer in the cause because of his past support for liberal political issues and candidates.
At the very least, she could add even more crowd-drawing power to a Trump campaign which already fills entire sports arenas. Mrs Palin was two years into her Alaskan governorship when John McCain chose her to be his running mate. The self-described “hockey mom” soon attracted huge crowds and huge media attention. After the 2009 election, she resigned as Alaska governor and has since forged a lucrative career as a writer and political commentator. Before the announcement, Palin tweeted a link to an article by her daughter Bristol, attacking Ted Cruz, Trump’s main rival for the key Iowa voters, who get first chance to have their say in the nomination race. Cruz has also praised Palin, saying: “Without her support, I wouldn’t be in the Senate” - a reference to her backing that helped him to a surprise victory in a 2012 Senate run-off election. “Regardless of what she does in 2016, I will always be a big fan,” he tweeted. Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton’s campaign team tweeted sarcastically to Sarah Palin after the announcement: “congrats to the Youtube commenter who wrote your remarks.”

Pro cycling team lucky to survive in car crash AMERICAN cyclist Chad Haga had successful neck surgery after being among six professional Giant -Alpecin cyclists mowed down by a car on the wrong side of the road as they trained in Spain.
The 27-year-old was air-lifted to hospital after being struck on the head during the German team’s training ride near Calpe in Alicante on Saturday. Haga had successful surgery on neck and chin wounds, and a team spokesman said an orbital fracture would be treated later. Warren Barguil, of France, sustained a fractured wrist, while German John Degenkolb had surgery on a severe cut in his leg. He also sustained a fractured forearm. Max Walscheid, another German, suffered a fractured hand and shinbone, and Swede Fredrik Ludvigsson and Holland’s Ramon Sinkeldam were both treated for scratches and bruises. Iwan Spekenbrink, chief executive of Giant-Alpecin, said in a statement: “It has been a very tough day for the team and the riders will need time to recover.” The rogue car was said to have been driven by a British female tourist, on the wrong side of the road at Benigembla, near Alicante, in south-east Spain. And Giant-Alpecin confirmed as much in a statement, saying: “During the training
ride, a car coming in the other direction rode into the group of riders head-on. The riders were riding side by side on their own side of the road,” Team doctor Anko Boelens said soon after the crash: “Everyone on the team is in shock right now, and there are some major issues. “But we also realise that we have had some luck on our side. Everyone is conscious, stable and approachable.” Degenkolb, 27, won the prestigious MilanSan Remo and ParisRoubaix classics last season, as well as the final stage of the Vuelta a Espana - an event in which he won the points classification in 2014. Barguil, 24, finished 14th overall in last year’s Tour de France and is considered to be among the riders capable of ending France’s long wait for a home winner. Emergency services for the Mediterranean region of Valencia said on their Twitter account: “An English woman driving a car ran over six cyclists of Giant-Alpecin” after allegedly “driving into oncoming traffic.” Barguil was initially reported to be one of the most severely injured, but his uncle and agent Sebastien Michon said he had escaped lightly. “Warren is suffering from a broken wrist and, fortunately, that is his only fracture. He also injured his knee. It is a flesh wound and the doctors prefer to thin” In 2012, Spanish cyclist Victor Cabedo was killed after being run over on a training run in Almedijar, near Valencia.

Beatrix Potter is back in limelight
MUMS and dads, who have regaled their youngsters for years with tales of Beatrix Potter, will be heartened to learn that there’s another one in the pipeline.
A story written by Beatrice more than 100 years ago, The Tale Of Kitty-In-Boots, will be published for the first time in September. Beatrix, who died in 1943, remains one of the
world’s best-selling children’s authors, and this new story, discovered two years ago by publisher Jo Hanks, will be published in September. Ms Hanks, who works for Penguin Random House, spotted a reference to the manuscript in an out-of-print biography about the muchloved author. It referred to a letter Ms Potter had written to her publisher in 1914, talking about a new story concerning “a wellbehaved prime black Kitty cat, who leads rather a double life”.
Beatrix wrote and illustrated 28 books in all, and Sir Quentin Blake, illustrator behind Roald Dahl’s popular stories, will provide the drawings for the new story. Sir Quentin said: “It seemed almost incredible when, early in 2015, I was sent the manuscript of a story by Beatrix Potter, one which had lain unpublished for 100 years and which, with the exception of a single drawing, she had never illustrated.” The illustrator, who liked the story instantly, added: “I have a strange
feeling that it might have been waiting for me.” Ms Hanks, who works for Penguin Random House, said he was the perfect artist to illustrate the book because “he understands what makes a story engaging for children and adults, just as Potter did”. Beatrix’s first children’s book, The Tale Of Peter Rabbit, was based on a real rabbit named Peter Piper. It was published in 1902 by Frederick Warne & Co and proved an instant success.
‘Drug-rape doctor abducted woman’ A SWEDISH doctor, accused of drugging and raping a woman and locking her in a purposebuilt bunker for almost a week has gone on trial in Stockholm.
The 38-year-old, nicknamed the “Swedish
Fritzl” is said to have fed his victim strawberries, laced with the date-rape drug Rohypnol, before abducting her and holding her in a sound-proofed cell at his home. The doctor admits sedating and detaining the woman, after kidnapping her, near Kristianstad, southern Sweden, but he denies rape.
His lawyer told the court that her client described as a lonely and depressed man had been looking for a partner. The victim’s lawyer, Jens Hogstrom, told Swedish newspaper Expressen that she was traumatised by what happened, and deeply distressed by having to face her attacker in court.
A picture provided by the Swedish Police on 18th January 2015 shows two rubber masks, allegedly worn by the defendant and his alleged victim. He is believed to have been holding and sexually abusing the woman who has, reportedly, demanded damages totalling £31,000. She told police that the doctor had pre-
tended to be American when the pair arranged to meet for a second date in Stockholm last September, according to reports. Arriving at her home with champagne and gifts, he allegedly drugged her with strawberries dipped in chocolate before raping her and kidnapping her. He used a wheelchair
to transport her and two rubber masks - of a bearded man and an older woman - to hide their identities, driving her about 350 miles (560km) to his home near Kristianstad, say prosecutors. He is accused of locking her in a high-security, concrete-clad bunker on his farm, and repeatedly raping her over a six-day period.

AS a top currency provider, there are some recurring questions asked by many clients over the years, regarding the exchange rates - including the following:
*Is it better to trade on a particular day - say a Monday, when the markets open, or a Friday, before they close? If there were a guaranteed pattern, we would probably need to open our offices on those days only! *Will the exchange rate for my required currency go back up/ down in the next week? We can study what data may be due out, and look at current world events to see how it might affect the currencies you are looking at. But in some cases, the answer to this question can be as elusive as: “What really happened to Lord Lucan and Shergar?” We like to keep things straightforward and jargon-free for our clients. And unless you’ve had a reason to use a forex

company before, or are familiar with the markets, why would you be expected to be familiar with technical terms, or know what economic factors affect a currency rate? Many of you will watch the news on TV, hearing financial experts discussing all the topics such as oil prices, Greece (Grexit) and China, to name but a few, and how they have affected the Euro. Any mention by Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England, or members of the Monetary Policy Committee, regarding a possible increase in interest rates, will usually help the strength of the pound, etc. However, it’s not just the obvious things which provide indicators as to how a currency will perform. There are many other reports, such as employment figures, car sales, imports and exports, and the performance of other currencies around the world. These are all factors to take into account. Taxman still cashing in INHERITANCE tax was a political hot potato in 2015, and there should be some reforms later in the year. But it remains a nice little earner for the local taxman.
The 2015 inheritance tax collection raised 77.3 million euros for the Canarian coffers revealed as the highest since 2013 by the Regional Government’s Ministry of Finance. The overall total accumulated in the last three years came to 186.7m euros, which was among the lowest in the country. Despite this, the 2015 income

was 20% higher than 2014, when 60.3m euros poured in. The Canary Islands Government had planned a 54.6meuros windfall. The inheritance tax system will be transferred to an autonomous state tax, rather than a regional system. At present, each region applies its own rules, which leads to substantial differences from area to area. This disparity has led to a judgement by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which has told Spain to end the big discrepancies between residents in different territories. Mercadona hits back M E R C A DON A , the largest supermarket chain in Spain, has refuted online accusations that it is switching Spanish-produced goods for lowerquality products from abroad.
The company issued an extensive statement on its website to counter “the hoax”, which accused it of buying as many as 1,800 products from foreign suppliers. The statement reads: “You may have read on the internet, or received information through social media, indicating that Mercadona is eliminating Spanish products in favour of foreign products, or that Spanish products are being taken off the shelves at Mercadona. This information is completely FALSE.” The online message presses consumers to
“change supermarkets and let them know you don’t play around with jobs and food”. Mercadona, with several stores in Tenerife, then details exactly who makes its own-brand goods, including Hacendado (food) and Bosque Verde (household cleaning products). It is no secret that the Valencia-based, familyowned company, partners with firms working almost exclusively for Mercadona. Every year its boss, Juan Roig, thanks them for their work and lists them in the company’s annual report. Mercadona says it has 120 suppliers with 220 factories, and also has long-term agreements with 12,000 fishermen, 6,000 farmers and 4,000 livestock breeders across Spain for its fresh products. The anonymous online message claims that Mercadona has traded in 1,800 Spanish products “for foreign ones of low quality”.
It specifies that the olive oil comes from Morocco, while oranges are from Argentina, sunflower seeds from China, pumpkins from Panama and the potatoes from Israel. An image of the online accusation, provided by Mercadona, has stamped on it: “This is false”. Mercadona’s statement stresses that its olive oil is bottled by a Seville provider and is 100% Spanish, “as indicated on the label and accredited by the independent agency Det Norske Veritas (DNVGL). “In order to make our Hacendado oil, Mercadona works with over 150 co-operatives and oil-presses from different parts of Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, the Valencian region, Catalonia, Madrid and Murcia.” As for oranges, the company notes that 90% are Spanish, with ones from Argentina im-
ported between August and November only, when they are no longer grown in Spain - or if the ones available are not of sufficient quality. Similarly, potatoes on sale in Mercadona are Spanish except between November and April, when home-grown spuds do not meet the company’s standards and are imported from other climes. “In 2014, the company bought 14.9 billion euros of products in Spain,” read the statement. Mercadona, founded in 1977 as a butcher’s shop in a Valencia village, has remained in the Roig family, expanding nationally to reach over 1,100 supermarkets and 70,000 employees. The company has received plaudits for its early embrace of innovative techniques and fair-employment practices. And during the economic crisis, Mercadona actually expanded and hired thousands of new workers.

A two-part portrait of Elizabeth II’s grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary, which examines the lasting legacy of the couple who rescued the monarchy from potential disaster, and whose influence persists to this day. This episode focuses on King George V. George was an unlikely moderniser. Born and brought up in the Victorian age he was conservative to his fingertips. Yet in the face of unstoppable social change, he turned out to be a remarkable innovator, creating the House of Windsor, embracing democratic reform, and reinventing many of the royal traditions that we know today. When he celebrated his silver jubilee in 1935 the monarchy was more popular than ever. But as a parent King George V was far less successful - he bullied his children and alienated his eldest son and heir, Prince Edward. By contrast, King George had a loving relationship with his granddaughter, and much of Queen Elizabeth’s style and commitment to duty can be traced back to this early influence.

A year after being clandestinely brought together in New York, four conjurors - street magician J Daniel Atlas, mind-reader and hypnotist Merritt McKinney, escape artist Henley Reeves and sleight-ofhand artist Jack Wilder - are performing as The Four Horsemen in Las Vegas. Their initial show is impressive: a member of the audience is apparently instantly transported to their bank vault and invited to switch on a vacuum machine, which then showers the remainder of the audience in cash. It not only baffles the spectators, it also stumps the police when they discover that the ‘robbery’ was actually carried out for real. And, as the Horsemen brazenly build upon this first success with a series other inexplicable heists, FBI agent Dylan Rhodes and Interpol’s Alma Dray are tasked with tracking the magicians down and finding the evidence to convict them.

Vera ITV1, 20.00
DCI Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) investigates the mysterious murder of a fifty six year old grandmother, discovered by a young girl on the wild and desolate Northumberland moors. The body is swiftly identified as Anne-Marie Richards, recently returned from Scotland to reconcile with her two daughters, Nicole McKendrick (Kelly Gough) and Christine Withers (Faye Marsay). A 999 call placed by Anne-Marie on the night of the murder coupled with the disturbed state of her cottage, suggests a possible abduction by someone she knew. The fractious relationship between Anne-Marie and her family rouses Vera’s suspicion; could an old feud be motive for murder? But who is posting abusive comments about her online? What is her connection to a Newcastle businessman and why has she been paying regular visits to a run down town on the coast? As Vera questions the local community, she discovers that Anne-Marie was a divisive figure, no stranger to controversy or conflict in her colourful past. Aided by DS Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty), DC Bethany Whelan (Cush Jumbo) and DC Kenny Lockhart (Jon Morrison), Vera must use all her tenacity and instinct to uncover the dark truth at the heart of the matter, with devastating and far reaching consequences for her team.

The Great Interior Design Challenge BBC2, 19:00 16 talented amateur designers battle it out. In the first heat, the group of amateurs are youth worker Jane, actress Sharon, doggie day carer Holly and ex-textiles salesman Frankie. They must transform a bedroom each in a modernist former leisure centre in south London - one of presenter Tom Dyckhoff’s favourite buildings in the UK. Jane has a nervous wait using concrete to make elements of her modern Scandi scheme. Sharon is being bold with colour to answer a Bloomsbury-inspired brief, but she may have gone too far for her homeowner. Holly gives herself way too much to do with craft projects including a selfie booth. Frankie faces disaster after deciding to upholster huge parts of his Japaneseinspired design. Can he finish it to his own high standards? They each have a thousand pounds, three days and a small team to help deliver their schemes. The judges must decide which designer hasn’t done enough to stay in the competition.

Back In Time For The Weekend: The 1950s BBC2, 20.00
Like many modern families, the Ashby Hawkins home is stuffed full of tablets, computers, phones, and gadgets to distract them in their spare time. But for one summer they agreed to give up all their 21st century technology and travel back in time, to experience the radical transformation of our leisure time since 1950. The family’s own home becomes their time machine as they are transported back to a different decade each week. Guided by presenters Giles Coren and social historian Polly Russell, the family’s entire experience is underpinned by The Family Expenditure Survey, a government study which ran from the 50s right through to 1999. The survey’s detailed spending records give us the best possible clue as to what families were doing with their leisure time across the five decades. In episode one the family enter the 1950s, so it’s goodbye to their flat screen TV and hello to a piano, darning and a pipe to keep them amused. It’s the era of formality and austerity, as many families bought little more than fags and a spool of thread from week to week. Dad Rob finds out that he’s expected to be handy with a tool kit, while mum Steph, who normally works full time, discovers that it’s not her tablet or phone that she’s misses, but the family’s white goods. Without them, she’s stuck at home for hours with all the washing, cooking and cleaning expected of a 1950s housewife. But there are upsides: 16 year-old Daisy gets a chance to learn ballroom dancing, courtesy of Angela Rippon who was a teenager in the 50s, while 12 year-old Seth discovers the joy of the great outdoors, spam fritters included…

Camila’s Kids Company: The choice Inside Story BBC1, 21.00
With astonishingly intimate and unique access, Camila’s Kids Company: The Inside Story tells the dramatic, unfolding story of the demise of one of Britain’s best-known charities and the ultimate fall from grace of its founder, Camila Batmanghelidjh. Throughout a summer of accusations and allegations, award-winning documentary director Lynn Alleway follows Camila at close quarters and witnesses first-hand her fight to save the charity she founded 19 years previously. As filming begins it isn’t yet public knowledge that the charity is teetering on the edge of insolvency and that the government is demanding that Camila stands down as CEO. Lynn films inside Kids Company HQ as the story breaks on a massive scale and the charity finds itself hitting the headlines on a daily basis. As allegations of mismanagement and money being misspent mount, Camila stands firm, resisting moves to downsize and make staff redundant, and she vows to fight on and save the charity. The film suddenly takes a dramatic turn and the charity is forced to close. The staff are left reeling, the vulnerable are left confused and frightened, and the community is devastated. Everyone wants to know who’s to blame. The film takes us on a rollercoaster journey of shifting perspectives and sympathies, all the while addressing the questions we all have about what really happened to Kids Company. The director shifts from confidante to interrogator, bringing an emotional resonance to a familiar news story. But while the charity is no more, those in need have not gone away. As for Camila, she remains defiant - she is down, but not out.

World War Three: Inside The War Room BBC2, 21.00 Following the crisis in Ukraine and Russia’s involvement in Syria, the world is closer to super power confrontation than at any time since the end of the Cold War. Now a committee of senior former British military and diplomatic figures comes together to war game a hypothetical ‘hot war’ in Eastern Europe, including the unthinkable - nuclear confrontation. The War Room faces a scenario that has haunted western strategists since civil war broke out in Ukraine: potential Russian military involvement in the Baltic States of Latvia and Estonia. Like Ukraine these countries have sizable Russian speaking minorities, but unlike Ukraine they are members of NATO, whose founding treaty states that an attack on one ally is an attack on all of them. Because of this, western analysts regularly war game a situation where Russia seeks to exploit ethnic tensions in the Baltic and test the strength of the NATO Alliance. These ‘war games’ are normally held in secret. For the first time, we have filmed a major war game with some of Britain’s most senior military, political and diplomatic figures. The War Room includes former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Sir Richard Shirreff; First Sea Lord Admiral Lord West; Joint Intelligence Committee Chair, Baroness Neville-Jones; British Ambassador to the United States, Sir Christopher Meyer; and British Ambassador to Moscow, Sir Tony Brenton - and the group contains a whole spectrum of views about how we should regard President Putin’s Russia.

Based at one of Britain’s largest cat and dog veterinary centres, Chris and Liz test different aspects of each animal. Round one tests whether either species can understand numbers. In Vienna, Chris discovers that dogs can discriminate between higher and lower numbers of dots and Liz tries out the test on cats with surprising results. Round two tests which animal has the better vision, sense of smell and hearing. Chris challenges sniffer dog Boris to find him in a busy city. The final round looks at whether cats or dogs are the most physically agile by testing which can jump the highest, which is the fastest sprinter and which the best endurance runner. Chris also comes face to face with a pack of wolves whilst Liz confronts an Arabian wild cat. Together, they put our favourite pets under the microscope to see how they compare.

Keeping Up with the Khans Channel 4, 21:00 This four-part series explores the lives and aspirations of new migrants to Britain and the impact of immigration on a single community: Page Hall in Sheffield. Page Hall’s tightly packed streets of terraced houses were once home to a predominantly white working-class community. During the 1960s and 70s, migrants from the Pakistani controlled area of Kashmir came to the area and thrived, owning properties, shops and restaurants. Over the past five years more than 1500 Roma migrants from Slovakia have moved to the area, hoping to build the sort of prosperous lives for themselves that previous generations of immigrants now have. While some of the long-standing white residents and established immigrants have become frustrated with the influxof Roma into the small community, and accuse them of anti-social behaviour, other locals have tried to give the new arrivals opportunities to make a better life for themselves.

Scorpion ITV2, 21.00
Team Scorpion must stop a sabotaged runaway subway train with Paige and Ralph on board. Also, in his attempt to impress Happy, Toby has his first boxing match. Scorpion is inspired by a true story - its a high-octane drama about eccentric genius Walter O’Brien (played by Elyes Gabel) and his team of brilliant misfits who are the last line of defence against complex, high-tech threats of the modern age. O’Brien’s “Scorpion” team includes Toby Curtis (played by Eddie Kaye Thomas), an expert behaviourist who can read anyone, Happy Quinn (played by Jadyn Wong), a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvestor Dodd (played by Ari Stidham), a statistics guru. Pooling their extensive knowledge to solve mind boggling dramas amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo (played by Robert Patrick), who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien. However, while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other’s humour and quirks, life outside their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen (played by Katharine McPhee), who has a young gifted son, to translate the world for them. These nerdy masterminds have at last found the perfect job; a place where they can apply their exceptional brainpower to solves the nation’s crises, while also helping each other learn how to fit in.

Gordon Ramsay helps first-time restaurant owners Richard and Jorge in Atlanta. Their restaurant, Park’s Edge, has been open for three years but is in big trouble due to constant fighting between them, poor food and a bad vibe in the tight-knit neighbourhood. Richard and Jorge alienated customers when they lashed out against local critics and claimed that people weren’t coming to their restaurant because they were racists, refusing to support a black-owned business in a white neighbourhood. Gordon comes up with a brilliant plan to resolve the issue within the community, but just when things start to look brighter, a rogue chef threatens to ruin everything.

THE TRUE PRO
By Jamie Droo THE art of entertainment has so many dynamics and, if an artiste is able to display most of them during a performance, then he or she will definitely get a good reaction from the audience.
In most cases, and especially here in Tenerife, the crowd’s judgement on entertainers begins - even before they are introduced! Because of the way this circuit works - with most acts doing two or three shows a night in different venues - it means that the artistes don’t have a great deal of time between shows. So they generally arrive at the venue, ready to rock ‘n’ roll and already dressed in their stage attire. This makes it pretty easy for the audience to identify the entertainers as soon as
L I V E R P OO L singer-songwriter Colin Vearncombe, who performed as Black, has died at the age of 53 a fortnight after a car crash in Ireland left him badly injured.
Colin, whose 1987 single Wonderful Life was a European top-10 hit, suffered head injuries in the tragic 10th January incident. He passed away “peacefully” in Cork University Hospital on Tuesday, surrounded by his family, after being placed in an induced coma. His wife, Camilla, and their three sons said in a statement: “He died peacefully with his family at his side, who were singing him on his way. “Colin received the best possible care from the expert and highlyprofessional staff there and we are deeply grate-
they come in. The clothing an entertainer wears will usually create the first impression. However, if the act is a rock band and the lead guitarist turns up in tailored, three-piece suit, it would send out the wrong signals. In other fields of entertainment, a suit would create the right image. For example, Spencer Robson is a vocalist of the highest calibre, with
the ability to impersonate many famous voices. His stage attire is impeccable and unique and, probably, also bespoke. This always gives the audience the impression that he takes his art seriously. And if these subliminal signals are put out before the act even gets on stage, the job of winning over the audience becomes that much easier. One of the best co-
medians in the Canary Islands is based here in Tenerife. Billy Porter always wears a suit on stage, but he bills his show as outrageous and his clothing is just that, as you would expect from a comic labelled this way. Whether it is a tailormade pink suit, or one with a wild-animal print, it creates an image before the first punchline is delivered. It is so important to dress according to the theme of the performance. My Father has been a vocalist his entire life, and has toured extensively in some of the biggest cabaret venues in the UK and Europe. He always told me the most important dynamic in stage clothing was footwear. This is because most stages leave your feet in the direct line of sight with the seated audience. So if the shoes are not clean and polished, they will almost certainly be noticed and probably create a bad impression. As a singer, you’d want people to talk about the quality of their voice and not how dirty their shoes are. These things seem petty, but I have
seen this with a few acts here, and heard audience members make comments like: “I enjoyed the show, but that suit jacket could do with a dry-clean,” or, “He´s a good singer but he could do with investing in a new pair of shoes”. So, with that in mind, it is all relevant to the memory an artiste should want to create. To be referred to as a “true pro” in showbiz is a huge compliment for any performer. But in order to gain that accolade, certain dynamics have to be displayed. The publicity posters on the billboards at entertainment venues are provided by the act, so they are also important in creating a good first image. And it is this publicity which gives people that first hook of interest in the particular show. I am responsible for booking acts in the venue where I am resident, and I’d certainly think twice about booking an act that arrives with a poster made online, using a photograph taken in the back garden. It would tell me instantly that the entertainer is not taking his/
her job seriously. A good poster design will last years, and will also help people identify their favourite acts, creating individual brands. The delivery of talent will be the last thing and, obviously, the most important to the audience, who will judge the act. And the more artistes can do to create an initial impression, the easier it will be once they are on stage. There are so many more elements to the success of a performance once it has begun, but clothing and publicity are the two most important dynamics to consider if an entertainer wants to be thought of as a “true pro”. There are many acts on the Island which fall in to that category, but there are also acts that just don´t think about these things, or simply don´t care. Believe me, they will have limited longevity in the business. A career as an entertainer can provide a wonderful lifestyle and, if performers take their craft seriously, their names or branding will always be remembered.
Wonderful Life ends in tragedy for singer ful for everything they did.” Fellow-Liverpool musician Pete Wylie, of Eighties band The Mighty Wah! paid tribute to his friend on Twitter, saying the news was “just so very sad”. He added: “I want to send all the love I can muster to Colin’s parents, brother & partner + to all who loved him, and who he loved too. “I could still sing the very first song Colin recorded with me in the WAH! studio. I remember it that clearly. And that voice!” Colin, born in Liverpool in 1962, had his first top-10 hit with the Sweetest Smile in June 1987 when he was 25. His second hit song, Wonderful Life, which
he had previously released but got to No.72 in the charts, made the top-10 in the UK, Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria, the Netherlands and Italy. But despite finding fame, Colin later said “the pop-star life” was
not as he had imagined it. “I was frustrated by how few of the people in the music world I respected,” he said. “Maybe I just didn’t go to the right clubs. I’ve never been a great schmoozer or network-
er, and the idea of setting out to meet a certain type of people is anathema to me. “It was two years of disappointment - I didn’t have any wild sex, I’m not a druggie, so I was just digging a hole for myself.” The Wonderful Life song, which has since been used in numerous advertisements and films, has been covered by artists including Tina Cousins and Katie Melua. The album of the same name sold more than 1.5 million copies and peaked at No.3 on the charts. Although he is best known for Wonderful Life and another Eighties single, Sweetest Smile, Colin also re-
leased 15 albums under his own name. Last year, he returned to his original stage name Black for a crowd-funded album, Blind Faith, which received positive reviews. He also published poetry and staged exhibitions of his paintings in south-west Ireland, where he lived in later life. Hundreds of fans wrote messages of support on the musician’s Facebook page following the crash. His publicist said there would be a private funeral, as well as a memorial service for him in Liverpool, “as we know there are many, many people who will want to celebrate Colin’s life and work”.

Travel
By Vanessa Vee SO M E T H I NG a little different this week … I usually write about places to which we can travel directly from Tenerife, but I just can’t resist making this an exception to the rule.
And all it entails is a cheeky little flightchange in neighbouring Gran Canaria. Madeira is a popular holiday destination at any time of the year, and around a million people visit this wonderful patch of Portugal annually. The island lies just south of the Azores and is a place I love to visit - quite a few times, actually - and mostly via cruise ship. It lies on the Gulf Stream and enjoys yearlong mild temperatures,
29th January - 4th February 2016
Madeira’s simply magnificent!
with a low of 66° in January, rising to highs of 78° in August and September. Come to think of it, Madeira is a mild sort of place: chilled, relaxing and welcoming. It was claimed by Portugal in the 15th century and has been part of the country ever since, although it is now an autonomous region. Those wishing to find the best Madeira holidays will be interested to know that it is, technically, part of an archipelago, approximately 300 miles from Africa and 600 from Europe. This comprises a series of volcanic islands which appeared 20 million years ago, and Madeira was one of the last to present itself. Its capital, Funchal, is in the south of the island and an area I love to visit. It is a 500-yearold city, resting in an enormous, geological amphitheatre that
looks as though it is chiselled into the rock upon which it stands. The dramatic combination of Madeira’s coasts and volcanic highlands provide holiday-makers with the sight of magnificent landscapes to gaze upon in wonder. Tourism accounts for over 20% of Madeira’s GDP (a broad measurement of a nation’s overall economic activity), and most visitors hail
from Germany, the UK, the Portuguese mainland and Scandinavia. Conversely, most of the Portugese population in Britain actually come from Madeira. The island takes food seriously, and eating out there is a delight. Seafood dishes, as you would expect on an island, are always a good bet. For meat lovers, Espetada is a must-try: beef chunks, marinated
for hours in wine, vinegar and olive oil, then grilled over fragrant wood chips. The local wine, fortified and known simply as Madeira, comes either dry or sweet and complements the local specialities superbly. Soak up the fascinating demonstrations of how they produce the notable Madeira wine in one of the many bodegas dotted around Funchal.
At Monte, the fashionable hill town of Madeira, the magnificent gardens surrounding the château-like Monte Palace demand a visit. And after wandering around the town church, we walked down the stairs and saw two white-clad “chauffeurs” with straw hats, waiting for tourists to take a sledge ride. It all sounds a little crazy but it’s not really. Basically, take the cable-car up - not for the faint-hearted, I must warn - then queue to load yourself into a large wicker “basket”, which carries you back down! The baskets are handled by two Madeirans, dressed in traditional costume, who steer the baskets as they glide along the roads on runners. Your life is basically in their hands, but the trip is an absolute “must” if you visit this beautiful island.

Lucky 7 Burgers, Los Cristianos
Burgers, booze & views! WE were invited to sample Tenerife’s latest joint on the block this week. And, though opening under three weeks ago, Lucky 7 Burgers is already gaining fame for producing the best gourmet burgers in the South of the Island, as well as for its amazing cocktails. There is some irony in the fact that, as a vegetarian, I was asked to write this review. But I hope to highlight that this eaterie is not just for meat-lovers, but for those of all food preferences. It is situated in the middle of the main San Telmo strip, in Los Cristianos, and the first thing that strikes you is the amazing view from the terrace … sea and sand that stretches for miles. As a nice touch, the owners have provided warm, fluffy blankets in case it gets a

bit breezy in the evenings. The first decision to make was about the cocktails: which to choose? And although the Porn Star Martini is a favourite, we opted to go more traditional with a refreshing, Long Island Iced Tea and a Cosmopolitan. The starter decision was a bit easier to make: mixed platter for two it was! This consisted of tasty mozzarella sticks, home-battered crispy onion rings and padron green peppers (a Spanish speciality) to add some local flair. These came served with three delicious, dipping sauces: Mexican Chipotle, Jalapeño cheddar and Sweet chilli, all served

on American, dinerstyle baskets to complete the experience. The question of what to have for mains was considerably more difficult. Of course, I had to go for the falafel Veggie Burger, topped with cheese and a refreshing yoghurt sauce on a sesame bun. But ‘The Salad’ in a crunchy Tortilla basket also looked rather fresh and appealing. My dining companion went for the Dirty Burger option, two 100g, prime-beef patties, topped with cheddar cheese, Slow-cooked pulled pork, Chipotle BBQ and onion rings, served in a soft, briochestyle burger bun. As the meat is such good quality (the best possible), we were even asked how we’d like it to be cooked - rare, medium or well-done - as you would a steak. Other favourites on
the menu so far also include the Lucky 7 Burger itself and, for those who tend to sway towards white meat, the Lucky 7 Chicken Club Sandwich, with fresh salad and topped with bacon and a Dijon mustard sauce. Owner Greg, who has been in the catering industry for 10 years, also wanted us to know that there was a “make-yourown-burger” option available. We finished off our meal with some strawberries (actually grown on the premises) in a passion fruit cream. You can’t get fresher or more home-grown than that! Finally, we can’t finish without giving a mention to the friendly staff, Zoran, David and Hannah, who will always endeavour to make sure your experience with them is one to remember.

By Val Sainsbury YO-YOING between healthy eating during the week and gorging at the weekend is just as bad for you as a consistent diet of junk food. Scientists behind a study have revealed that intermittent exposure to unhealthy food three days a week is just as bad for your stomach as eating junk continually . The experiment revealed a diet alternating between junk and healthy food made rats almost 20% heavier at the end of a 16-week spell, compared with the groups fed healthy or junk food. The alternating group

demonstrated large swings in food intake consuming 30% more energy than those on the healthy diet. When the group switched back to a healthy diet, they consumed half as much food compared with those eating healthily. Those on a junk-foodonly diet had a reduced number of a certain type of microbiota (microbe population living in our intestine), which assists weight loss and has brain-protecting functions. Leptin and insulin levels of those on the alternating diet remained in between the healthy group and junk-food groups. Scientists also said the microbiota was almost indistinguishable from the group fed a constant diet of unhealthy food.
But gut health of both groups was distinctly different to the group fed a balanced diet. The importance of good gut health has never been so prevalent. Recent studies have linked it to weight loss, healthy brain function, mood and even diabetes. Researchers say this provides a lot of insight in to the effects of yo-yo dieting. Professor Margaret Morris, Head of Pharmacology at Australia’s University of New South Wales, said: “The study suggests certain gut microbiota, including Ruminococcus and Blautia, may be promising targets for future therapeutic strategies to treat metabolic disorders.” The findings have been published in the Molecular Nutrition and Food Research journal.
UK women run out of puff MORE women will die from lung cancer in the UK this year than those in any other EU country, because they took up smoking earlier than them. Researchers looked at death rates from all cancers in the 28 EU member states, of which Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain are the largest. They reported “encouraging” downward death trends from most cancers. Since 2011, there has been an 8% fall of male cancer death rates and 3% of women in the EU. But the number of women dying from lung cancer in the UK will be higher this year, at 16,400, even more than in the other large countries. The rate per 100,000 women has started to fall, however, from 20.15 per 100,000 in 2013 to the 19.37 predicted this year, though death rates are still rising in the other countries. The rate is 8.77 per 100,000 in Spain, 10.96 in Italy, 12.18 in France, 15.72 in Germany and 17.12 in Poland. Milan University’s Professor Carlo La Vecchia, who co-authored the study with Professor Fa-
bio Levi, of Switzerland’s Lausanne University, said: “There is a moderate fall in death rates in female lung cancer in the UK, although rates there are still higher than in other EU countries, except Denmark, because British females started to smoke earlier. “Rates of deaths for all ages are still comparatively high, but they are levelling off, while rates for the young generation of UK women are lower than in most other large EU countries.” Prof Levi added: “We need effective tobacco control in European women for overall rates to level off at around 1517% per 100,000.” The study, published in the Annals of Oncology journal, forecasts that between 2009 and 2016, death rates from leukaemia among children aged 0-14 will have fallen by 38% in boys and 20% in girls. Deaths from the disease in people aged between 15-44 will fall by 26% in males and 22% in females. Among men and women aged 45-69, the death rates will fall by 19%. Researchers say that improvements in management, multi-drug chemotherapy, immu-
notherapies, stem-cell transplants, radiotherapy and treatments with fewer toxic side-effects, have all contributed to the improvement in survival from leukaemia. Some leukaemias remain hard to treat successfully, particularly those more common in adults and the elderly. But Prof La Vecchia said: “The absolute numbers of cancer deaths are likely to level off in the future. “Although we are seeing declining death rates, the number of new cases of cancer are increasing, placing a growing burden on National Health services, so governments should be aware of this.”
HAIR SCIENCE… NOT PROMISES!
By Carl Pattison
I HAVE been in the hairdressing trade for over 35 years, and in that time I’ve seen products come and go, and I’ve also read claims made by manufacturers that would make anyone’s hair curl … literally.
So when I heard about a “new” product taking the US by storm, I decided to check it out on the internet. And, suitably impressed having done my homework, I ordered my first batch of this “wonder-product” and couldn’t wait to test it on the girls at work. I was waiting for a result, a slight difference in the hair’s texture and shine, as it claimed. It was way above my expectations, and I started using it immediately on my eager clientèle,
King Fit My New Year’s Resolutions for 2016: I want to get in shape... I want to get fit...
King fit personal training team. Call us Now on 607 209 070
who love anything new and exciting. The results have been amazing, and every client who’s had this treatment agrees with all of us in the salon that this amazing new product can literally “turn” around hair damage. The shine, the strength and the feel of the hair is improved phenomenally, and never before has a product amazed us all into believing and seeing that hair can be renewed. Even placing this wondrous liquid, Olaplex, into colours improves the shine, and also protects as it works. It’s my industry’s biggest shake-up in years,
and it is proving to be a hit right across the hairdressing globe. This innovative product, made by hair scientists in the US, replaces the oxygen molecules in your hair that normal colouring removes, thus leaving it lustrous and full of shine. It even makes hair smoother and easier to style, so it’s a win-win situation as far as we can see in the salon. If you want more info, contact us in the salon and we will gladly show you the results of what we are calling our “miracle in a bottle” Olaplex, the scientific way forward in serious haircare.

Interior design, without the cost By Miruna Voicu MOST people assume that employing an interior designer is an expense they can´t afford.
But interior design should simply reflect the personality, personal preferences, taste and budget of the owner - and that’s you! So, inspiration for the arrangement of your property actually comes from you, and all you need - a lot of the time - is some guidance and pointing in the right direction. Some of the celebrity designers you see on TV come up with schemes that, for me, would be extremely difficult to live with. I think many of them look awful, with clashing colours in order to be outstanding. Because interior design is artistic, it can never be an exact sci-
ence. Of far more importance is talking to the clients, getting a feel for the use of the property, what they expect to achieve, and what their preferences are. Most people in Tenerife do not want to make a huge splash, and would rather have a home that is practical, but looks lovely and well-put-together, with a bit of a designer twist. Since we all have our opinions and preferences, we could, of course, all have a go at the design and see what happens. Unfortunately, mistakes can be costly, so if you have the chance to use the services of an interior designer, make the most of it!
For example, buying a sofa that is too big for the room, using colours that are too strong in a small room, or trying to use two colours that do not harmonise … these are all mistakes that could easily be made, and are expensive and difficult to put right. The interior designer will have worked on enough properties to have a good idea of proportion, balance and what will work in the space you have available. In addition, he or she will take into account the practical aspect of life in Tenerife. It’s no good having white fabric sofas if you are renting your property out to families, who are likely to mark them with soft drinks and sun-cream. Use of colour is one of the most popular topics of interior design, and one about which everyone has an opinion. It makes sense to use a neutral background, and to use a stronger colour as an accent within the room. But don’t go overboard, or the effect will appear contrived.
In the photo, a red accent was used on a neutral background, and this was driven by the fact that the open-plan kitchen was red.
However, more items in the same colour would begin to look overdone, so getting the balance right is absolutely crucial.
All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo, where interior design advice is included in the furnishing service.
ALL TIED UP By Carl Pattison
YOU can put on your best suit and your smartest shirt, but you aren’t fully dressed if you’re not wearing a tie because it finishes off a guy’s look totally.
But what’s hot and what’s not when it comes to getting you or your man all tied up? If you’re of a certain, younger age-group, the slimmer variety should be the one to to go for as the wider types can look a little dated. More mature men can get away with a slightly-broader version, but they should stay away from the “kipper” type because they were left behind in the Eighties. If you are going to pull off a tie, knowing how to knot one is key, so check out on YouTube how to do this correctly, or get help from someone who can. Finding the right colour will depend on your accessories, If you’re wearing a matching belt and shoes, it stands to reason that your tie should blend in, or make a statement. Don’t have brown ties clashing with black shoes, and vice-versa. Stick to items that
match, and don’t overdo the patterned variety because this can also look dated. Stripes or faint patterns can look cool, as can textured ties, which are really hot at the moment. Above all, make sure the tie reaches just above your belt and not halfway up
your middle - looking as though it belongs to a small child. Getting this look right is easy, and doing it right will ensure that whether you’re dressing for the office, or for a night out, completing your smart look isn’t finished unless you’re wearing the right tie.

Who wants this special pet? SIX months ago, Protection Civil arrived at our gates with one of the worst cases of animal cruelty and neglect we have ever seen.
This gorgeous, 18-month-old German Shepherd had a broken front leg and, even more worryingly, his spine was completely curved. We really didn’t believe he had any chance of surviving, but there was a light in his eyes, so our vet repaired his broken leg. But his spine was so bad that we were unable to do anything to help it. Against all the odds, after lots of rest and tlc, he has made an amazing recovery and manages to walk and run around. And he is the most goodnatured dog you could ever imagine. We are seeking a very special home for him, where he will get lots and lots of well-deserved love. He will need gentle exercise only because of his spine. If he interests you,

Adeje’s libraries packing them in THE number of people visiting Adeje’s public libraries is on the increase, with requests for materials from students throughout 2014 rising by 30%, use of study rooms by 74% and requests for local Wi-Fi connections up 375%.
Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, the borough councillor responsible for libraries, said: “Since the opening of the Adeje-based Southern University, we have noticed more and more people using our libraries. “Taking into account that we now have students in each of the four years on the tourism course in Adeje,
that adds up to 150 third-level students in classes here in the borough. There are many other Council courses on offer and, of course, pupils from our primary and secondary schools.”
Councillor Afons Ruiz added: “Our intention is to continue growing to meet the increasing demand of the users, and continue to be the first-choice reference library network. We aim to meet the needs
of our new users, as more university courses open in Adeje in the near future.” Its public libraries received 36,470 visits in 2015, with 82% of those in the main library in the town’s cultural centre. The breakdown shows a 50/50 split between male and female users, with 77% adults using the service. The Councillor also pointed out: “Given the proliferation of eBooks and new technologies, our statistics do show that a healthy number of people are borrowing, with 6,600 books lent last year.” Adeje’s library network has over 69,000 documents - books, audio-visual material, magazines, etc - available to the public, with a growing foreign language section. Joining a library there is relatively easy, and it is an excellent, free resource for all.

Cats Welfare news
Love ‘em, don’t leave ‘em HAVING to rehome our cats is never something we think we may have to do when we add one to our family, and it is always a heart -breaking decision to make.
Every month, Cats Welfare receive e-mails and calls from people who need to re-home their cat for one reason or another. We do not have a refuge, unfortunately, so we can only offer to advertise on your behalf to try to find a home. It can be hard for us to find a responsible home, and can take some time, but we do manage to home most cats. Before contacting us, however, please be aware of the following: Most common reasons for wanting to re-home *We are moving house and our new landlord won’t let us have pets *I/my partner/my child is allergic to the cat *I am pregnant and I am worried about toxoplasmosis, and the risk to my unborn baby *We no longer have time to give her the attention she deserves *My cat is toileting outside the litter tray, and I just can’t take it any more! *I am leaving Tenerife and I can’t take my cat with me These may appear to be reasonable reasons, but there are ways around all of them before you need to give up your pet. *There are many properties which will accept a cat, so look around more, ask, offer a bigger deposit, allow
regular visits from the landlord for his/her peace of mind *Allergies can be treated. Speak to your GP, see our website for information and search the internet for suggestions *You are more likely to contract toxoplasmosis from raw meat or unwashed vegetables than your cat. Just take basic care, such as wearing gloves to clean the litter tray, and thoroughly disinfect *Cats are selfsufficient, independent animals, and will be content with being fed twice a day and a bit of attention after work, or when the kids are in bed *See your vet to ensure it does not have a urinary infection, and ensure the litter tray is kept clean and accessible *The passport process for a cat is surprisingly easy, and not too expensive. Your cat
Anyone for tea, or even coffee? ARONA’S Las Galletas & Costa Del Silencio Lions Club members are organising a tea, coffee and cake morning at Cath’s Corner, Costa del Silencio, on Wednesday (3rd Feb) from 10.30am. Everyone is welcome to attend, with tea or coffee and cake offered
for two euros, and gluten-free products also available. Craft stalls and others will be set up, so please come along, socialise and learn more about your local Lions Club. All proceeds will go towards club funds to help the local community.
will require a blue pet passport, microchip and a rabies injection. Flying animals to England can be very expensive - around 600 euros just for the ticket. But there are companies who can help you with the process, and we can put you in contact with them. Flying animals to Europe can be very cheap, around 100 euros or even less. Some airlines flying to Europe even allow small animals, including cats, in the cabin in a pet carrier. If the expense of flying your cat to England is prohibitive, think about the possibility of travelling overland. There are people in Tenerife who make regular overland trips back to England and some allow pets to travel much cheaper. If you are still convinced that you need to re-home your cat, you must ensure the cat has up-to-date injections, a microchip, a green health book and is neutered. We can advertise the cat for you, but it must have had these things done, or about to be done. New owners don’t want immediate expense after the adoption, so it is our policy that all adult cats have these things completed prior to new adoption.
If payment for it is a problem, contact us and we may be able to arrange for it to be done at a discounted rate at one of the vet practices we use. For much more detailed information on this and other subjects, visit our webpage http://www. cats-welfare -tenerife. com/rehome/. Please feel free to contact Theresa on 680 475 500 (9am-6pm) seven days a week) and we will do all we can to help you. Foster carers required Kitten season is fast approaching, and we have just two foster carers for the whole of the South of Tenerife. It will be impossible for us to take in all the kittens we will be requested to help. So please, PLEASE consider being a shortterm foster carer for either cats or kittens. No experience is necessary and we provide all food, litter, beds, etc, and all vet care. We also find them homes, and you provide the cuddles. If you would like to find out more by talking to one of our current foster carers, please contact Theresa ... it’s very rewarding. Want to adopt? Our web page Www. cats-welfare -tenerife/ pets is updated daily
with pictures and information about all our cats and kittens awaiting homes. If you’re looking to adopt, take a look and contact us to arrange a no-obligation visit with the foster carer, with whom you can ask questions and meet the cat. All cats and kittens go on a week’s trial, so you can be sure you have made the right decision. Our charity shop We are always looking for donations of good
condition/quality clothes for our charity shop, on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). If you have anything to donate, including as-new furniture and household effects, ring Mark on 636 590 557 and he will arrange collection from you. Our shop is open seven days a week (10am-6pm) except Saturdays 11am-4pm), so pop in for a browse - and help us help the cats.

Let battle commence!
THE top two Division One teams were not in action in the Direct Telecom Pool League, which offered a chance to the chasing pack to move closer. Dreamers A are currently in third spot and last week had to work hard for an away win at Terrace Roosters. This week saw them at home against Terrace Bantams and again, they came close to dropping points. They looked comfortable across the first two sessions, taking both 3-1, so as they entered the final frames, they had already guaranteed a draw. Bantams fought back, though, and showed some of the pool they are capable of as they took the next three games, to give themselves the chance of a draw. It was Adi for the Bantams against Steve A, and the Bantams captain made the early running. He had a little luck on his last yellow but was down to the black, while Steve A still had four reds on the table. The black wasn’t in a potable position, though, so Adi tried to get it out in the open. Unfortunately, he misjudged his angles and the black brushed off one of Steve A’s reds, knocking it in. With two shots and his balls wellpositioned, Steve A finished the game. And for the second week in a row the Dreamers boys gave a big sigh of relief. Palms B are now up into fourth spot after a convincing home win against Bluebell A. The home team made an absolutely flying start as they raced out of the blocks and took the first seven frames. It was game over before the Bluebell boys even realised what had happened. Bluebell’s Al then took
a frame off Barry to ensure it wasn’t a whitewash, but that was as good as it got because Palms B mopped up the last four for a big win. Exiles A have now moved into the top half of the table, but they were made to work for the points by Tenerife Hammers C. It was a close contest over the opening frames with both teams taking blacks. But Exiles, with home advantage, opened a small lead, and once in front, they never looked back, wrapping up another win. It was a mixed night for the two teams from Los Abrigos. The Phoenix were at home against Palms A who had won in Los Abrigos last week. But the hosts had one of those games where everything went their way. That said, their finishing was superb. They took every chance and are finishing the season strongly. The 8-4 scoreline was about right, but Palms A will still be confident of revenge when they meet in the Cup next week. Elsewhere, Phoenix Potters were down on Amarilla Golf for a game against Terrace Roosters, who are starting to find a little form. The home side started well and soon found themselves 5-1 up. But Potters dug in, started taking frames and, going into the final frame, they had got the score back to 6-5. Roosters were rattled, but Dan was still favourite to wrap the last game up and take the points for the home side. However, he fluffed his lines on a straightforward black, which allowed Eric back to the table, and he made no mistake, taking his last two balls and the black to grab Potters a point which looked unlikely

earlier in the evening. In Division Two it was a night of celebration for bottom club Sabores, who finally recorded their first-ever league win! They had travelled down to Puerto Colon to take on Hoppy’s B and, after a recent giant-killing in the Plate competition, confidence was high. The opening frames saw both teams evenly matched and there was not a great deal to separate the two. It could have quite easily finished in a draw, but Sabores squeezed ahead and, with tension running high, dragged themselves over the line for that well-deserved first victory. Crown B’s title charge suffered a setback as they hosted Tenerife Pool Tables in a Valle San Lorenzo derby game. The home side started well, taking the first session, only for TPT to peg them back, levelling the game at 4-4. The Crown then took the next two, ensuring a draw and sensed vic-

tory. But TPT fought back to take the final two frames and a very good point. Did I mention that 10-year-old Harley, yes 10-year-old Harley, beat bountyhunter Greg … twice! Picasso’s A could have taken a step closer to top spot with Crown B dropping points, but Fran and the boys had a rare off-night at home against Rewind Rewired. Picasso’s have been in good form of late, moving nicely up the table, but the Rewind boys are all decent sticks. The games were all close, many going down to the black. But the visitors took them when needed and secured a comfortable -looking win, yet but it was anything of the sort. Treehouse B also secured a good home win against another team who have been in good form of late, Splash Bar. The teams started the match level on points, hoping to open up a little breathing space. It was another tight game with neither team wanting to hand the

advantage to their opponents. Games were close and frames were traded, but the home team finally got their noses in front and hung on for the win. Bluebell B have moved up the table and put themselves within striking distance of a possible promotion place. However, in their home game against Hoppy’s A, they didn’t make it easy. They were looking good after taking early frames, and led 6-2 after the first two sessions. But Hoppy’s A fought back. Lesley, Mark and then Kevin grabbed frames, meaning they had a chance for a point. It was Grant for Bluebell B against Simon in the final frame but, unfortunately, Hoppy’s charge fell just short as Grant saw the game out to take the points for the home team. This week it’s Cup week and here are the fixtures: Tenerife Pool Tables Cup Quarter-Finals Palms B v Exiles A Treehouse A v Gaffers A The Phoenix v Palms A Tenerife Hammers A v Rewind A Tenerife Pool Tables Plate

And it’s that time of the year again when the Scotland touring side pitch up. The annual contest has grown year by year, as has the rivalry. Last year, the event went down to a single, deciding frame. Scotland sneaked home, but the Direct Telecom squad are confident of regaining the trophy. The first match is on Thursday (4th Feb) at Palms Bar in Torviscas at 7.30pm, and the home squad comprises: Gav and Steve (Dreamers A); Stash (Exiles A); Kev, Lee and Neil (Gaffers A); Harry (Gaffers B); Fritzel, Paul and Wez (Hammers A); Chris (Palms A); Graeme and Wayne (Palms B); Steve (Picassos A); Danny (Rewind A); Bubbles, Harry and Sergio (The Phoenix); Mark and Scott (Treehouse A). Flights not so chipper now AFTER 25 rounds of league matches, the only unbeaten record in Division 2 has gone, leaving a slight question mark over the title’s final destination. A fine performance by Sandys Chippers consigned Phoenix Flights to their first defeat. It gave a glimmer of hope to both themselves and Spear Chuckers, although a quick totup shows that Flights need nine points from matches against the Jucee Girls and Waterfall B. Can they hold their nerve? But Spear Chuckers, with respect to opponents Pas O Nadas B, will be disappointed that they failed to capitalise to full effect after being restricted to just five points in Tuesday night’s catch-up match. A 5-3 win at Ourplace Playgirls, with a first 180 from Ramon, virtually guaranteed Summerlands a fourth-place finish, while Clouseaus’ fifth spot is under threat after they lost the trebles, and the match at Gaffers Jucee Girls.
Legends won the trebles to squeak a narrow victory at Picassos, and those Naughty Nautas were at it again, notching up an eighth draw by taking the last rubber to tie with Bar Leones. With Phoenix Bar putting their feet up, Boothen Army narrowed the gap at the top of Division 1, producing the goods with an 8-0 whitewash at Bar 180 B. Gaffers now look to be nailed-on for third place after they put seven past Palms Sports Bar, although they have to face the top two in their final three matches. Boothen Titans nicked the last leg to seal a hard-fought draw with Hoppys Bar, while Pas O Nadas A produced one of their best results of the campaign, Walter striking his first maximum as they claimed all eight points at Waterfall Warriors. Aside from some league catch-up matches, all eyes will turn to

the semi-finals of the John Lowe Team Handicap Trophy and Plate tonight (Friday). Monday’s draw threw up some interesting ties. In the trophy, Phoenix Bar entertain local rivals Pas O Nadas A, and Phoenix Flights,
the only Division 2 side remaining, travel to Gaffers with a 192-point head-start. The Plate has a Torviscas derby as Palms Sports Bar take a 112-point lead to Hoppys Bar, while Emerald Shamrocks hold a

At least it’s a point CD Tenerife 0 Numancia 0
By Roscoe THE last time these sides played, on the opening day of the season, there was a ninegoal thriller. On Sunday, the sporting gods decided to even matters out because there would not be nine goals if those sides were still playing now. For the second straight week, Tenerife produced an insipid display, which did little to excite their biggest crowd of the season. On the plus side, it was another clean sheet, a seventh point from three games, and Ten-
erife are now just five points off the play-offs. And that is not to be sniffed at. But entertaining they are not. A team are said to mirror the manager’s personality. In which case, I will stay away from Jose Marti in the pub! Previous manager Raul Agne liked his sides to have a go, hence games like the 6-3 affair in Numancia. Marti has more than a touch of the George Graham’s about him. You know what they say about lies, damn lies and statistics. This was the third, straight clean-sheet for Tenerife, but they have conceded 29 goals. Only
Llagostera and Almeria are leakier. With the transfer window slamming shut in a few days, it will be interesting to see what the club do. With a bit of investment, they should be able to make a charge for the play-offs.
For me, they need another striker, attacking midfielder and, maybe, one more wide player. The books need to be balanced and this week, Abel Suarez had his contract cancelled so he could move to the Romanian first division.
Useless striker Pablo Martin could still, somehow, end up at Real Zaragoza, while there is interest in Ricardo. He is on top-level wages and has hardly kicked a ball since Bonfire Night. This weekend Tenerife take on Nastic, who have had a fine return to the second tier. They are in the last play-off place - in fact, they have been there most of the season. They have lost just one of their last five and are a nasty side. They love a challenge, which will not surprise long-standing Tenerife fans. Nastic will be led out by former Tenerife captain Manolo Martinez. He is just back from
a knee injury, and the 35-year-old still has plenty to offer. He played 63 times in the Tenerife side who were promoted in 2009, and he was then one of the better players in the brave attempt to stay in La Liga. Martinez’s finest match was in the pouring rain of the Nou Camp. He was everywhere as he tried to keep out Messi, Ibrahimovic, Thierry Henry, Pedro - and a rather young Yaya Toure. “I loved my time with Tenerife” he said this week. “I always look out for their results, and I’m pleased they seem to be building another good team.”

By Adi Benson IT is FA Cup action again this weekend as the fourth round kicks off. There were no real shocks in the previous round, apart from Oxford beating Swansea. Here are a selection of the ties, and let’s hope we have a few more upsets this time around. Derby (Ch) v Man Utd (PL) It will be the ninth time these two clubs have been drawn together in the FA Cup, United having won the previous six encounters. And to find a Derby win, you have to travel back in time to when their opponents were known as Newton Heath. Championship Derby needed a second-round replay in the 1895-96 tournament, which they won 5-1. They then beat them 2-0 the following season in the third round. In the last six encounters, all won by the Red Devils, there were no replays and United scored 19 goals with just six conceded Prediction: Home win
29th January - 4th February 2016
Can Derby hit mighty Reds?
Arsenal (PL) v Burnley (Ch) It is 20 years since Arsenal failed to appear in the fourth round. Unfortunately, Burnley cannot boast that kind of record as this is the first time in five years they even got this far. The two clubs have met seven times prior to this game in the FA Cup, with Arsenal winning the last five. It is another trip back in time, when they were called Woolwich Arsenal, to find a Burnley win - a 6-1 first-round victory in the 1895-96 season. They followed that up a couple of seasons later, 1897-98, with a 3-1 success, again in the first round. Prediction: Home win Nottingham Forest (Ch) v Watford (PL) These clubs have an even FA Cup record against each other, playing just twice and each team recording a win. Their initial meeting came in the 1945-46 season, and it was unusual in those days because they played over two legs. Both games ended 1-1, so a third game was needed to settle the tie, which Watford eventually won 1-0. It wasn’t until 43 years later that they met again, and this time Forest avenged that defeat to KO them. Prediction: Away win
Crystal Palace (PL) v Stoke (PL) Neither club can boast about being FA Cup winners, both achieving the runners-up berth only. Palace achieved that in the 1989-90 season and Stoke in the 2010-11term. They have met twice before in the competition, with Stoke winning on both occasions. Their most recent clash occurred just three years ago, and they won a replay 4-1 after a goal-less first game. Stoke have a fairly good record, reaching the fourth round in each of the last seven seasons. Palace are again bidding for an improvement after being eliminated in the third, fourth and fifth rounds respectively in the previous three years. Prediction: Home win
Portsmouth (L2) v Bournemouth (PL) It’s strange to think that as recently as 2008, Portsmouth won the FA Cup - beating Cardiff City 1-0 - and appeared in the final again two years later. Since then, because of financial difficulties, they have dropped like a stone through the divisions to League Two. They have met Bournemouth just once before in the Cup, in the fourth round 15 years ago, when Portsmouth were in a higher divi-
sion and won 5-1. The Cherries have exited the competition in the fourth round in the last two seasons and, in fact, haven’t progressed any further since 1989. This is the first time Portsmouth have reached the fourth round since their second final appearance. Prediction: Away win
Shrewsbury (L1) v Sheffield Wednesday (Ch) Shrewsbury do not have a great Cup record, and this is the first time in 13 years they have travelled this far. You have to go back even further - another 12 years - to discover when they progressed to the fifth round. The clubs have met only once in this competition, in the 1962-63 season, the first game ended 1-1, but Wednesday progressed with a 2-1 victory in the replay. Wednesday will be happy because it has been five years since they last went further in the FA Cup than city rivals Sheffield Utd. Prediction: Away win Carlisle (L2) v Everton (PL) All eyes will be on this fixture as Carlisle are the lowest-placed survivors in this season’s competition, and a win against Premier League rivals would be seen as a huge giant-killing. The
teams have met three times before, with Carlisle yet to record a victory - so maybe this is their year! Everton have won all three games, the most recent coming six years ago with a 3-1 success in the third round. Carlisle are into the fourth round for the first time since 1997, and they haven’t progressed further since their 1975 run to the quarter-finals. Prediction: Away win Aston Villa (PL) v Man City (PL) These two have been FA Cup opponents eight times and, despite Man City going up and down through the leagues over the years, they hold the upper hand, winning six of the previous encounters. Villa, struggling to stay in the Premier League, need a good Cup run to distract them from poor form. The first meeting between the clubs came back in the first round in 1899-1900, when Villa won 3-0. They last met in the fifth round five years ago, and City won by the same scoreline. Prediction: Away win Oxford Utd (L2) v Blackburn Rovers (Ch) In terms of confidence, Oxford will be riding the crest of a wave after knocking out Premier League Swansea in the previous round, especially as they are
at home again. This is a potential banana skin for Blackburn, who are 18th in the Championship. They have played twice before in the Cup, with one win apiece. When they met in the 1964 fifth round, there was three divisions between them, with Blackburn in the top one. Oxford won 3-1 and skipper Ron Atkinson was carried off the pitch by euphoric fans. I wonder what happened to him? It’s the first time this century that Oxford have made the fourth round, and 22 years since they went any further. Prediction: Home win Liverpool (PL) v West Ham (PL) Despite losing home and away in the League against West Ham this season, the Cup omens are with Liverpool. The clubs have met on five previous occasions, with Liverpool winning each time. The first meeting came in the short-lived “intermediate round” in the 1900-01 season, with Liverpool recording a 1-0 victory. They last met 10 years ago, in the famous, so-called Gerrard final when Liverpool won on penalties after coming back to draw 3-3 at the final whistle. This is the only “repeat” final in this year’s fourth round. Prediction: Home win
Let’s hear it for the girl THE Premier League gets more intriguing as each week passes, with no particular player or team setting it alight.
It means that the Oasis Fm Fantasy League, as with the main stream, is seeing the total of points drop, on average, because they are being shared around many players - often the unfancied ones. It was a very Leaguefriendly point-scoring
team of the week as the players were spread across a multitude of clubs. Only Watford stood out because they had two players making the team. The rest came from West Brom, Chelsea, Sunderland, Liverpool, Leicester, Spurs, Swansea, West Ham and Man City. Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino continued his recent good form, emerging as player of the week with 18 points. There was no change in our Fantasy League top six, with all the
teams managing to hold position. But they didn’t score so well. The top four or five haven’t changed much in recent weeks, so is there a chance for other teams to break this little monopoly? If you look beyond the top five, the answer may be Yes. Roscoe’s Wanderers are lying sixth, just 69 points behind table-topper Frank Devany. Matthew Pott’s Gold Pack are 70 points adrift, with Paul Tregent’s Jolly Boys Outing 82
points off the pace. These three teams have been cutting the gap, slowly but surely, in recent weeks. There are 15 game weeks remaining and, to give you an idea of whether it can be done, this week’s team of the week scored 19 points more than the top team. So Yes, it can! That honour went to Jadene Littlejohn’s JLFC, with 84 points. Her top performers were Chadli with 10 points, Ivanovic 12 and her captain, Aguero, 24. Go girl!
It is FA Cup action this weekend, so our Fantasy managers have
a little time to tweak their squads in readiness for the run-in.
