Meeting the Mayor

By the Editor

AROUND 1790, German writer and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote: “Be careful what you wish for.” I couldn’t help but think of this when I had the first sit-down interview in English with the new Mayor of Arona. Turn to Page 3

CANARIAN WEEKLY EXCLUSIVE!

Mena will change Arona Continued from front Last May, Canarian Weekly pushed for 37-year-old Jose Julian Mena and his PSOE to claim power of one of the most important Town Halls in the Canary Islands. It was close, but with nearly 35% of the vote, Mena was able to claim the Mayorship. The career politician has paid his dues. Mentored by long-serving and popular Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, he has been groomed for this job for many a year. Mena is instantly likeable. He has a calm persona and is a thinking politician. A proud dad, he likes nothing more than playing with his four-year-old son, picking fruit from the garden. He is a normal guy. A night out with his mates will mean a few beers in a live-music bar. But he is also fully aware of the job to which he has been entrusted. Did he realise quite how tough a challenge would be before polling day? “Yes and no,” he says with a smile. “It was an important victory for my political party, PSOE, and for us to get back into power after 20 years. “I am very proud of that. I have a great responsibility as Mayor of Arona. It’s great that we will now have such close ties with Adeje, and we have a real chance to work together. “Just think of all the people in our areas and the projects we can do.

But it’s a massive challenge to get everything done. Every day, I learn more about what I have to do.” The potential for change in the South clearly excites Mena, who talks constantly about change. “There are some big projects we need to get right,” he admits. “We have the new hospital, but we don’t have the proper road system to support it. That must change; we have what will be this great new hospital and we have to be able to get there quickly and safely. “We also need better transport links everywhere. We must make the TF-1 motorway better. Bigger. It needs to be three lanes, no question. Another one, for example, is the problems with the traffic around, say Guaza. It’s a common problem.” Like Mayor Fraga, Mayor Mena is big on integration. “I want closer relationships between the 130 nationalities we have in Arona,” he says. “ I was discussing this topic with the British Ambassador, Simon Manley, when we met before Christmas. We want an Arona which is more embracing than, maybe, it has been in the past.” Mena has spent the last eight months finalising a working cabinet and finding the right people for the job. He has named eight deputy mayors, and five of them are under 50. His right-hand man and advisor, David

Miguel Perez Gonzalez, is bright, intelligent and a fresh set of eyes. Ditto, Press spokesperson Sonia Galdon Garcia and Eduardo Galvan Rodriguez, who was part of the successful travel department at the Fitur tourism conference. The Mayor admits he was staggered by the state of the Town Hall books. It took him months to get to the bottom of how bad they were - and even today, Mena is unable to finalise the 2016 budget. He shares the frustration of critics such as Pablo Morales, of the Popular Party, who are screaming for the announcement. He has already found some money to re-employ lifeguards on the beaches, and he is ex-

panding the number of councillors by three. Their wages and department budget will come from lower wages for all the councillors. “More manpower for less money,” was how it was described. One of the new councillors will be the “business minister”, whose sole job will be to help with the infamous red tape. I asked Mena about Arona’s famously anti-business stance, especially when it comes to opening licences. With a wry smile and a shake of the head (he does that a lot!) he said: “I am aware of the problems. We (the new cabinet) all know about the problems of the past. “I guarantee that when we get everything finalised, we will find a solution. In March, we will

have one person (councillor) dedicated to help with these problems.” He says it’s as easy as going to the Town Hall and making an appointment with the new councillor. We shall hold him to it! Money is clearly a problem, and Arona’s Mayor will have to make some deeply unpopular decisions for the longterm good. Some bills remain unpaid from years ago, and the ongoing court cases against former mayors and leaders clearly embarrass Mena. Reading between the lines, being called “Mayor of Arona” can tar in some places. But Mena is a naturally-positive person. He is bullish on solving the policeman shortage, as we reported last week.

He has also vowed to get to grips with the “image” of Arona. Mena knows that Arona is not as easy on the eye as Adeje … “but I look at Adeje and we can do the same” Mena also promises action on a few matters that fill our mailbox. “We will improve the experience on our beach fronts,” he pledges. “We will get the Blue Flags back. We will make sure the pavements are safe. I want Arona to be the leading destination for all, and we have worked hard to make us more accessible. “We are proud of the number of visitors with certain needs, who come here because we can cater for them. Our access is second-to-none, and we will continue to listen and help wherever assistance is needed.” He is aware of the ongoing problems with scooters, bikes and the need for many pavements to be upgraded. It’s clear that he knows he has a mountain to climb to get Arona to where it should be. My take is that the job is bigger than anyone around him thought. But he is up for the fight, of that there is no doubt. Arona has been a byword for incompetence for too long, and this once-proud region needs to pull itself together. For that, it needs strong leadership - and a man the public can trust. On first impressions, Mena looks the man for the job.

UK referendum: are you eligible? IF you have been on the electoral roll in the UK within the last 15 years, you can register to vote in the UK referendum concerning membership of the European Union.

British Ambassador Simon Manley this week launched a major campaign to make expats aware that they may be eligible to have their say in the EU referendum, provided they register to vote in good time. Mr Manley told representatives of the expat community: “Interest among expats in the EU referendum is high, but

Profitable area for tourist companies EXCELTUR, the nonprofit association of the 25 biggest and leading Spanish tourist companies, has named Adeje as the tourist destination in Spain with the highest level of profitability for companies. Its report shows that the per-room, per-day spend at the Tenerife borough increased by 15% in the final months of last year. It also says “the municipality, continues its commitment to luxury in applying a sustainable criteria”. The building of four, five-star hotels, which will open by 2020, was also highlighted. Adeje Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moreira said: “We are very satisfied with the strategy shown at Fitur (Madrid’s recent travel

industry convention) because we showed we have solidified our position in the market. “And we also have interest in new investors and projects. The municipality has committed to maintain the growth of domestic tourism and develop policies for job creation, training, the constant pursuit of excellence and the distribution of wealth.” She confirmed that Adeje had secured more than a dozen different contacts, and had closed projects at Fitur, including an agreement with ONCE (the National Organisation of Spanish Blind People) and several partner companies, “to strengthen the area as a fully-accessible destination”.

awareness that you may be able to vote is low. We want as many expats as possible to be aware that they can have their say. “You can register to vote in a few minutes, via the government website www.gov.uk and do encourage your friends, family and colleagues to do the same.” The British Embassy in Madrid is backing a global campaign by the Electoral Commission to encourage Britons living overseas to register to vote. Some 283,000 Brits are registered on the padrón as resident in Spain, but just 11,000 are eligible to vote in the UK. So the vast majority will miss out on having their say in the referendum, unless they take a few simple steps. To register as an overseas voter, you must have been registered in a UK constituency within the last 15 years. All you have to do is visit www.gov.uk/register-tovote with your passport details and National Insurance number to hand, and the postcode of where you last lived in the UK. You can choose how you want to vote: by post, by proxy (appointing someone to vote on your behalf), or even in person if, by chance,

you are in your UK local authority area on polling day. It takes just five minutes to register. And because overseas voters must allow enough time for their ballot paper to be posted from the UK, you should do it now rather than wait for the final deadline, when it could be too late to use a postal vote effectively. Postal ballot papers will be dispatched about a month ahead of the referendum - earlier than for the General Election last year - giving overseas voters more time to receive, complete, and return their ballot pack to the UK. The Embassy urges Brits to pass on the register-to-vote message via its ‘Brits living in Spain’ accounts on Facebook and Twitter, the expat media and a wide range of partners working with the British Consulates in Spain. If you are active on Twitter, tell others that #YourVoteMatters and add the URL http://bit. ly/1RGrh5H so they can also register. Go to www. gov.uk/register-to-vote and make sure you can have your say. How you register a vote in the EU Referendum *A referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union will be

held by the end of 2017 - It could even be this year! *If you were registered to vote in the UK within the last 15 years, you can register as an overseas voter and have your say. #yourvotematters *Go to www.gov.uk/ register-to-vote and fill in your data. All you need is your NI number, passport details and date of birth (even if you don’t have an NI number, you can still register) *Choose how you want to vote: by post, proxy, or even in person if you will be in the UK on polling day. If you choose to vote by post, ballot forms will be sent about one month ahead, giving you time to receive, complete and return your vote to the UK *Register early, so you have sorted it out well

before the referendum date is announced. If you wait, you may miss a chance to have your say *Just as in the UK, you need to register annually. So if you registered as an overseas voter for last year’s General Election, you need to renew your registration for the EU vote. *Of 283,000 Britons officially resident in Spain, just 11,000 were registered to vote in last year’s General Election. Many Brit expats could miss out on the EU referendum, so tell your friends and family to register as well *Use Facebook and Twitter to pass the message on that #yourvotematters *Go to www.gov.uk/ register-to-vote - make sure you can have your say.

THE Queen’s crowning is always one of the Santa Cruz Carnival highlights, and this years pageant was another eyecatching extravaganza.

Health tourism sector ‘is not taking enough’ SPAIN’s health tourism is growing at a rate of 20% per year, in both revenue and patient volume - but it’s not enough, according to one expert. The sector is estimated to have brought more than 500 million euros into the country in 2015 while, globally, the health tourism industry generates more than 75,000 million euros every year. Yet Inigo Valcaneras, director of Spaincares, the organisation which released the data, believes that while growth has been maintained, Spain is getting only a small share of the potential market right now. “We were looking at 500 million euros, while I believe we should be among the three or four countries capturing most of the business,” said Valcaneras. “Spain has all the potential to be one of the leading countries in health tourism globally.” The most popular countries among health tourists currently are

Germany, the UK and the US, as well as other countries with less reputable healthcare systems such as Israel or Turkey, according to Valcaneras. And though, globally, Spain actually receives the third-highest number of leisure tourists, Valcaneras adds: “We have a very efficient and a very good healthcare system.” Spaincares is a strategic alliance between Spain’s tourism and health sectors. The Spanish Health Tourism Cluster was formed with the dual aim of positioning Spain as a leader in the market, attracting patients to the local healthcare facilities. According to Valcaneras, Spain meets all the requirements to offer a very competitive value for health tourists and, he predicts, 2016 is expected to the year of health tourism in the country. “Spain’s commitment will be very clear - it is going to grow the business,” he said.

Hospitals specialising in the care of foreign patients, spas, rehabilitation centres and specialist tour operators, as well as insurance companies and health tourism destinations, are some of the main areas of focus. “From the health tourism industry point of view, we see that there are different markets which we have to segment,” said Valcaneras. “There is a high demand for health spas in countries like Germany or France, with great thermal culture as well as the rehab centres in the Nordic countries, where 20% of the population is over 65,” he added. Also, hospitals have a better chance in Arab countries and Russia, where there is a demand for highly-complex treatments such as oncology or cardiac surgery. There is also a demand for less-complex treatments such as cosmetic surgery, for which there is a large market among the European population.

More pharmacies needed to satisfy Health Service

SIXTY new pharmacies will open in the Canary Islands this year, but there is still room for even more! The Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) this week published the provisional list of newcomers - making 766 in all - which was welcomed by Roberto Moreno, Director of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) It means there will be 2,600 people per phar-

macy, which is 200 below the legal minimum, and Moreno said: “This is a step forward in a key sector. But we must work harder to ensure we reach the minimum service for the population.” Among the requirements for opening a new pharmacy is that the owner must be independent and financially solvent. But of the 544 people who applied for permission, just 60 made the grade.

Open-minded Adeje

Tourists splashing out TOURISM in Tenerife boomed last year, with holiday-makers in total spending an average of 11 million euros daily. This generated annual revenues of over four billion euros, which was 6.6% more than in 2014 … proof, if needed, that tourism is the key sector in the Island’s economy. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, who revealed the 2015 tourism figures, said: “This data is very good, and is a result of improving quality and connectivity of the Island.” Alonso added: “The growth is based on the quality of what we offer. This has led to the creation of new jobs in the sector, which has recorded the highest employment figure since 2008.” For his part, Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe said: “This is an example of how a mar-

ket grows, and Tenerife has made significant progress in recent years.” The spending upturn was led by the Irish, who coughed up 9% more than in 2014. British growth was 4.9%, the Dutch 6% and Italian tourists also spent more. But it wasn’t a universal splurge. There was some belt-tightening by our visitors from Germany, whose spending dropped 3.5%. The Nordic visitors spent 13.5% less, and there is further proof that the Russian bubble has burst because the country’s visitors spend was 47.6% under their 2014 total. In 2015, Tenerife maintained direct links with 27 countries (25 European and two African) and operated 157 air routes, spread throughout 77 companies.

Canary Island visitors reach record numbers THE Canaries set a tourism record last year as the number of foreign visitors rose again. Officially, 11,589,715 foreigners visited the archipelago. That was 1% more than in 2014, which had boasted the previous record, according to figures released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). December closed with 1,007,633 tourists, and the main increase in arrivals came from the UK and the Nordic countries, which ac-

counted for 31.2% and 22.5% of all foreigners who turned up in the islands. The Canaries was also the first destination of foreign tourists who came to Spain in December, with 29% of those visiting the country arriving here. In the whole of 2015, Cataluña was again the community leader for these visitors, with 17.4 million, followed by the Balearic Islands (11.6m), and then the Canaries.

THE International Mindfulness Network, in partnership with Adeje’s Dzogchen community, has celebrated a weekend of Open Mindfulness, training the mind and examining the science of contemplation.

The Rimay congregation community and the University of La Laguna also took part in the organisation of this event, which was opened by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, and Denys Rinpoch, meditation master and humanist. The Mayor welcomed all those gathered in Adeje’s Cultural Centre for the inaugural session of the event, which was open to the public. “We are delighted to host this event in Adeje, which contributes to personal development,” he said. “This is particularly important today in a society which seems to embrace superficiality, and in a world where the emphasis in education is on practical matters, almost to the exclusion of humanism. “All the tools being

developed here, tools that have been used for thousands of years, help personal and community development. “In a society such as ours, we need space and teachers to help us find and reach our humanity.” Rodríguez Fraga also spoke of his pride in Adeje, saying: “As a tourist destination, we could be forgiven for highlighting all things superficial, and losing sight of what is really important - including from a tourism point of view - the person.

“For that reason, the presence here in our midst of organisations, such as the Dzogchen community in Adeje, help us define ourselves as a borough that puts people first.” He also congratulated the alliance with the University of La Laguna, which was important in bringing appreciation of complementary and contemplative practices to the public. The main aim of this weekend event was to facilitate and promote the concept of open

mindfulness, which, according to Denys Rinpoche, is “the key practice for a harmonious, healthy and happy life - the three ‘H’s. Its natural teaching is neither religious nor cultural. It is a fundamental humanism which develops essential human goodness.” He added: “The benefits of mindfulness have now, widely, been scientifically established as remedy to stress, tensions and emotions - and as amplifying attention, efficiency and immune defences.”

A winter warning

IT has been a quiet winter on the health front. No flu pandemics and, until this week, no “disease that is going to wipe out mankind” scare story.

The Zika virus is not a new virus, but it is certainly a worrier. The pictures of babies with the small heads is heartbreaking. And now the story gets real. As we go to press, Zika is in Spain. Okay, it’s not in the Canary Islands, but it is on the mainland! The first case in Europe has been confirmed by the Health Ministry, which says that a woman who recently returned from Colombia is infected. The Spanish Government said the pregnant woman was diagnosed as having Zika in the north-eastern Catalonia region. The woman’s

names has not been released, but she is one of seven confirmed cases in Spain. A spokesperson said: “We have the diagnosed cases of the Zika virus in Spain. These cases have been imported into the country.” The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared that the microcephaly condition the head is smaller than normal - is linked to the mosquito-borne virus, a global public health emergency. Brazil has been the worst-hit nation so far, with 404 confirmed cases and 3,670 suspected cases of microcephaly since last October. The disease was previously thought to have been passed by mosquitos, but this week it was revealed that a patient in Dallas had caught the virus after having sex with someone who had returned from Venezuela.

THE Canary Islands is preparing to display Europe’s first underwater museum, off the coast of Lanzarote, and work began on positioning the sculptures on Sunday.

Atlantic Museum is the vision of British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, who has created similar works in Mexico and Grenada, in the West Indies. His sculpture park in Grenada, a global first, has been listed as one of National Geographic’s Top 25 Wonders of the World. This museum, off the Lanzarote coast, will be submerged 12 metres under the ocean, accessible to scuba divers and visible to glass-bottom boats. The sculptures on display are human forms, some modelled after lo-

cal residents, and are created to attract plant and animal life, representing the relationship between humans and nature. Lanzarote Council President Pedro San Ginés said in a statement: “Today is a historic day for the islands because we open a door to the ocean that strengthens our position as a unique tourist destination. And it makes us much stronger and more competitive, compared with other nearby tourist

destinations. “The island is going to show the world one of its most precious secrets - the bottom of our sea.” The first sculptured exhibits include a couple taking a selfie, meant for viewers to reflect on new technologies and themselves. Another, called The Raft of Lampedusa, makes a statement about the refugee crisis, referring to the Italian island in the Med, where thousands have arrived.

Councillor Taylor said he wanted this exhibit to be a tribute to those who succeed, and also “those whose dreams and hopes remain at the bottom of the sea.” But the project is somewhat controversial locally, according to newspaper La Voz de Lanzarote. The project will cost some 700,000 euros in public funds, and some people questioned whether the proper coastline authority was consulted beforehand.

Expansion plans on line for trams

PLANS for Tenerife’s long-awaited trams’ expansion project have been revealed by the Cabildo, with the construction of a second line, to run between Tíncer and La Gallega. The project has a 280,000-euro budget, and work should start in early 2017 said Cabildo President Carlos Alonso. However, the forecast is subject to planning agreements which, he hoped, would be okayed in the coming weeks. The new line is part of

the “Strategy for Sustainable Integrated Urban Development (DUSI)” and is part of the southwest expansion of the metropolitan area in the North. The Cabildo has asked the European Union for a 15m-euro grant for improvements to Barranco Grande, El Sobradillo, La Gallega, San Matias and Tíncer. The trams’ expansion project has a total budget of 37m euros, which will be met by the Cabildo. Alonso said the layout of this extension has been

agreed with the city of Santa Cruz and the residents of the area. “This project completes the stitching of the suburbs of Santa Cruz and La Laguna, improves public transport and also has environmental improvements and other new public facilities,” added Alonso. One aspect to be included in the drafting of the project is to develop an analysis of improvements to be carried out in the network of buses with TITSA and other activi-

ties related to the public transport service, added the President. The extension of Tram Line 2 will include four new stops. The route will start from the current Tíncer station and is expected to go through the avenue of Los Majuelos to La Gallega. The line will be 2.5km long, covering a total population of over 24,000 inhabitants, and the extension of Line 2 will see around 7,000 passengers a day and two million passengers a year.

Over-18s hit the booze too much A NEW survey suggests that around one in six Spaniards over the age of 18, which is 17.1% of the population, drinks too much.

The study was conducted by Danish pharmaceuticals company Lundbeck, and presented in Madrid by a panel of experts. Julio Bobes, President of Socidrogalcohol, a research organisation into alcohol and drug dependence, said: “Spain is always among the countries with the highest alcohol consumption, along with France, Portugal, and Italy.” And Antoni Gual, of Barcelona’s Hospital Clinic, added: “Just as important as the data, or more so, is the trend.” Calculations about “risk” drinkers are measured in two ways, based on the type of drinker: daily consumers, as is typical in Mediterranean countries; or weekend boozers, characterised by the so-called bingedrinking common in the UK. Each glass of beer, wine, or shot, counts as a unit of alcohol (spirits with mixers equal two units). A man is considered at risk if his intake is four or more units of alcohol per day, or five or more during a binge. In the case of women, who generally weigh less than men, the limits fall to two and four, respectively. Gual highlighted that the survey also shows how one in five Spaniards is teetotal, contradicting the widely-held belief that “everybody drinks: in fact only 23.5% of people in Spain drink more than twice a week.” Younger people drink more In general, the survey shows that those aged 18-25 drink the most, and men more than women: 19.6% and 14.5%, respectively, are considered at risk. Conversely, 16.6% of men were teetotal, a figure rising to 27% for women. Bobes highlighted the dangers of drinking at an early age, saying that the brain was still developing until our mid-twenties. and that alcohol interferes with the process. Also at the presenta-

tion was José Ángel Arbesú, of the Spanish Association of Primary Care Medics (Semergen). He stressed the problem Spanish society has in recognising that alcoholism is a danger to health, pointing out that 12.4% of respondents to the Lundbeck survey believed that alcoholism was a vice, while 33.7% described it as “an illness that starts with a vice”. This belief delays alcoholics from seeking help, when “the most important thing is to be aware that there is a health problem,” said Arbesú, noting that around 40,000 people die each year in Spain from alcohol-related illnesses. “There are up to 64 illnesses directly and indirectly related to alcohol, such as hepatitis, cancer, and mental illness,” he said. Calculations about who is a risk drinker are based on the type of drinker: daily consumers or weekend boozers. Javier Zarco, from the Spanish Society for Family and Community Medicine (Semfyc), said Spain’s general practitioners were trained to deal with people with alcohol problems, noting that the survey reflected the public’s confidence in their doctors. Most most people said this would be their first port of call when seeking help, followed by associations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and specialist treatment centres. Coming a distant fourth were psychologists, although younger respondents said they were more likely to seek help from this source. “This is an important point because there aren’t many psychologists working in local health centres,” warned Zarco. The panel of experts at the Lundbeck presentation called for legislation to regulate alcohol consumption, with Bobes accusing politicians of failing to act. Gual called for laws to regulate price and access to alcohol, and also for controls on advertising: “Each day, the industry spends a million euros promoting alcoholic drinks. This is not ethical.”

Cristina must face big tax-fraud trial PRINCESS Cristina is expected to testify next month in a corruption trial, alongside her husband and 16 other defendants, after losing a legal battle to avoid being tried for tax fraud.

Yet lawyers for the Spanish royal (sister of King Felipe VI), as well as a prosecutor and a state attorney representing Spanish tax authorities, all said last month that the charges against Cristina should be thrown out. That’s because Government officials agreed she had committed no crimes and should face, at most, an administrative tax-evasion fine. But three judges presiding over the corruption trial disagreed. They sided with an investigative judge. He spent four years looking into the case and ruled earlier that she could be tried because of evidence presented by the private anti-corruption group Manos Limpias (Clean Hands). Cristina, 50, who is sixth in line to the Spanish throne, will face two counts of tax fraud, carrying a maximum prison sentence of eight years. She allegedly failed to declare taxes on personal expenses paid by a property company she owned with her hus-

band, Iñaki Urdangarin, an Olympic handball medallist turned businessman. After the decision was issued, the royal palace said it respected all Spanish judicial decisions but declined further comment. Cristina works for a Spanish bank in Switzerland, where she lives with her family, and has been excluded from royal appearances for years because of the case. Her lawyer, Miquel Roca, said the decision was disappointing, but he added that Cristina had received the news “with the utmost serenity and all due respect that any judgement always deserves”. She will next appear in court on Tuesday (9th Feb), when the defendants begin testifying. And she is expected to be the last person to answer questions in proceedings, which are scheduled to end by 26th February. During the trial, the judges will have to weigh up whether the couple criminally abused the property- consulting firm Aizoon, described in court documents as a “front company”, to fund luxury vacations, throw parties at their modernist Barcelona mansion and pay for salsa dancing classes. It is the first time a member of Spain’s royal family has faced criminal charges since the monarchy was restored in 1975. Urdangarin and others

face charges of embezzling up to 6.2m euros (£4.7m) from contracts that were, allegedly, inflated or never honoured. The princess’s husband, formerly the Duke of Palma, is accused of using his title to land the deals for the Nóos Institute he ran with his business partner, Diego Torres. The case is being heard in Palma de Mallorca, the regional capital of Spain’s Balearic Islands, because many of Urdangarin’s business deals under investigation involved the islands. Cristina denied knowl-

edge of her husband’s business activities during a closed-doors court appearance in 2014. But the investigative judge decided she could be tried for tax fraud, said to have been committed in 2007 and 2008. Details about the couple’s regal lifestyle, which emerged from the pre-trial investigation from 2011-14, outraged Spaniards as the country teetered on the edge of an economic crisis, and the unemployment rate hit 27%. The case was seen as one of the reasons for the abdication of King Juan Carlos in 2014 in favour of his son, Felipe.

New quake hits Andalusia ANDALUSIA was hit by a Magnitude-4.5 earthquake on Sunday evening as aftershocks continued, following last week’s 6.3 quake. The tremor, off the coast of Andalusia in south-east Spain, was felt in the provinces of Granada, Almeria and Jaén, according to the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN). It struck soon after 5pm, with its epicentre north of the Alborán island. And the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that an estimated 3.1 million inhabitants were living in the relative areas. But there were no injuries or damage, reported the IGN.

But more than 20 tremors, of Magnitude-2 force or more occurred or more around Alborán. Sunday’s quake was one of dozens of aftershocks following an earthquake with a Magnitude-+6, which struck in the Mediterranean last Monday. That quake could be felt in southern Spain, as well as in the Spanish enclave of Melilla, bordering Morocco. It caused damage estimated at 12 million euros in the North African territory and injured 26 people. Those who felt the earthquake on Sunday reported hearing a rumbling to the Seismological Centre, with chairs, lamps and other furniture shaking.

Our healthy economy

THE Spanish economy saw expansion in 2015, despite financial markets continuing to voice doubts over global growth.

The National Statistics Institute (INE) has confirmed an estimate advanced by the Bank of Spain a month ago: gross domestic product (GDP) grew 3.2% last year, the greatest improvement since 2007, before the crisis hit. The Spanish economy managed to prolong its upward pace in the final stretch of the year, posting fourth-quarter growth of 0.8% from the previous three months (or 3.5% compared with

the last quarter of 2014). This economic growth has already attributed to the strength of private consumption and business investments by the Bank of Spain. Although the INE will take a few more weeks to provide details of the national accounts in the three months to 31st December, the Bank of Spain has already attributed this economic burst to the strength of private consumption and business investments. The financial regulator also suggested that exports likely have little to do with this growth because they do not compensate for the surge in imports, triggered by higher household and business spending.

Top British travel writers hit Adeje THE British Guild of Travel Writers was in Adeje recently, hosting its annual conference for the second time in Tenerife.

It is an important event for the Guild, and nearly 90 leading English-language travel writers, photographers and broadcasters gathered at the Bahia del Duque for the inaugural dinner. Adeje Deputy Mayor Carmen Rosa Gonzalez Cabrera officially welcomed them to the borough, wishing them well at the start of their conference. “We are very proud of Adeje, both as a place to live for so many people and as a holiday destination. “And I hope during your stay that you will have time to discover why people don’t just chose to come to Adeje

once, but come back again and again. “Our tourism offer is constantly changing and developing. It would be easy to sit back and say, ‘Okay, we are one of the top-10 destination; we don’t have to do any more’. “Instead, we are constantly looking to move forward, to meet new tourist challenges and needs. Some of your Guild members - Joe Cawley and Andrea Montgomery - fell for

the charms of our Island years ago and live here. And, referring to the two Guild members who live here and often contribute articles about the Island to international publications, she added: “It’s great to see the Guild represented in Adeje and Tenerife.” Alistair McKenzie, an online travel editor and incoming Guild chairperson, was delighted to be back in Tenerife. “It’s a year-round desti-

nation we can trust,” he said. “And, as one of our writers said, ‘It’s one of the best-kept secrets’. It’s a fantastic destination, and it’s not hard to find good stuff to write about - and lots of it!” McKenzie agreed that conferences of this kind really do benefit the location because many Guild members will return on holiday. He also said that Tenerife had definitely overcome some the negative imagery of the past and, nowadays, was seen as a top-class destination. “It has become sophisticated, and increasingly so with more emphasis on activities (hanggliding, scuba-diving, mountain-biking, etc),” he added. “And for the Millennial generation, those activities are much more sought-after and actually play to its strengths.” The conference was organised with Tenerife and Promotur sponsorship.

Las Galletas after extra entrants, in the long run

THE ever-popular Las Galletas half-marathon, celebrating its 20th year, takes place on 3rd April, and registration is now under way.

The event, which began in 1996, is part of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation’s national calendar. The 2015 race had a record entry of 1,250, and organisers this year are hoping to attract 1,500 runners. Juan Sebastian Roque, Arona Sports

Councillor, said: “The event marks two decades of our celebration of athletics and sport. This has been the starting point for hundreds of runners from Arona, who have stepped into the world of running. “We want to promote sport for all, and pro-

mote our town among athletes.” In recent years the half-marathon, almost 22km, has also incorporated a 10.8km race for novices. There are various races, including veteran and senior categories, along with junior competitions. Registration, open

until 28th March, can be achieved on the web at www.mediomaratonlasgalletas.com or directly in the Los Cristianos Sports Pavilion, Guzman Sport (La Laguna) and Sport Mundi (Puerto de la Cruz). The registration fee will be reduced if you sign up before 20th

March. The 10.8km event will be 10 euros for federated runners and 13 euros for all the others. The main halfmarathon event costs 15 euros. The race starts at Salazar Gonzalez Street and finishes in the Rambla, of Las Galletas.

Roads to happiness THE Cabildo has finalised this year’s budget for the upkeep of Tenerife roads, with President Carlos Alonso insisting: “Maintaining the motorways in Tenerife was an absolute priority.” The contracts are split into four areas (north, south, west and Anaga) and over 23 million euros will be spend on the 611km of roads. Alonso said: “Our intention is to have bet-

ter quality roads, and we are carrying out an important road-investment programme throughout the Island.” In addition to the regular work, there will be improvements to the TF-5, TF-1, TF-82 and the TF-481( the road between Las Americas and the Magma centre), as well as the TF-1 and a new section for motorcyclists on sections of the TF-5.

Billion users get the WhatsApp message THE company behind WhatsApp, the messaging service, is now being used by a staggering one billion people

The California-based firm announced the application’s milestone just six years after it was founded by ex-Yahoo!

Anti-hero Goody dies GREAT Train robber Douglas ‘Gordon’ Goody, believed to have been the mastermind behind the 1963 heist, has died of a heart attack in Almeria, Spain, at the age of 86. Goody, deputy to gang leader Bruce Reynolds, who died at his home in Mojácar, served 12 years of a 30-year sentence before moving to Spain in 1975. He ran a beach-side bar called Kon Tiki, after learning to speak Spanish while behind bars of a different kind!

In 2014, Goody broke his 51-year silence as he spoke about the robbery, opening up about the heist in a documentary a year earlier called The Great Train Robbery: A Tale of Two Thieves. The son of Ronnie Biggs, one of the most famous of the 15-strong gang, who died just over two years ago, spoke of his sadness at hearing of Goody’s death. Michael Biggs, said: “I knew he was ill, but I didn’t know how ill he was. I’ve been away

from the country for a few months. “It is always sad to know someone’s passed away. My thoughts are with his family at the moment, and I wish his family all the best.” He added: “It’s the end of an era. Now it’s all down to the history books.” Asked what his father would say at the news of his fellow gang-member’s death, he said: “He would say, ‘We can finally all get together for a drink’.”

employees Brian Acton and Jan Koum. The app’s popularity stems from the fact that it allows groups of people to stay in touch simultaneously without having to enter contact details. As well as text messages, users can also share photos, videos and other media. It also offers a similar secure messaging service to the BlackBerry. It has become more popular as the Canadian phone-maker has seen its handsets fall in popularity compared with those made by other smart phone makers. WhatsApp has also proved popular in the US, where mobile-phone customers often have to

pay for text messages. And, according to Forbes, more than half the subscribers have been added in the last 21 months. A message on the app’s blog section said: “One billion people are using WhatsApp. That’s nearly one in seven people on Earth. “We are proud of this milestone, and we’re humbled by the extraordinary ways all of you have used WhatsApp. “WhatsApp began as a simple idea, ensuring that anyone could stay in touch with family and friends anywhere on the planet, without costs or gimmicks standing in the way. “So even as we cele-

brate this achievement, our focus remains the same. Every day, our team continues to work to improve WhatsApp’s speed, reliability, security and simplicity. “We’re excited to see how far we’ve come. But now, it’s back to work because we still have another 6 billion people to get on WhatsApp.” The messaging service was bought by Facebook in February 2014 for £12bn. It is popular in India, which has the largest number of users for a country, but faces competition in Asia from other messaging services like WeChat and Viber. The app has proved controversial in some countries where fears remain over secure messaging, with Brazil trying but failing to ban the service in December 2015. But supporters point to its successes, such as helping refugees avoid getting into difficulty while crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

Scientists move closer to helping infertile couples BRITISH scientists, for the first time in the UK, have been given the okay to “edit” the activity of genes in human embryos.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the national regulator, has approved a licence to genetically modify genes in research. One expert welcomed it as a move that would assist infertile couples and “reduce the anguish of miscarriage”. Bruce Whitelaw, professor of animal biotechnology at the Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh, said the project would also reduce the anguish of miscarriage”. But the scientists will not be allowed to implant any embryos used in their research into women. The embryos, which would be donated by couples having IVF treatment who do not

need them, must also be destroyed after two weeks. The HFEA said in a statement: “Our Licence Committee has approved an application from Dr Kathy Niakan, of the Francis Crick Institute, to renew her laboratory’s research licence to include gene editing of embryos. “The committee has added a condition to the licence that no research using gene editing may take place until the research has received research ethics approval. “As with all embryos used in research, it is illegal to transfer them to a woman for treatment.” Researchers at the Francis Crick Institute,

which has laboratories in London and Hertfordshire, rely on a technology called CRISPRCas9, which allows scientists to edit genes very precisely and very cheaply. Earlier this month, Dr Niakan said the licence was necessary to allow her to turn genes on and off in day-old embryos, to discover which genes control their development. She told Sky News: “It will teach us critical information about these genes in early human development. “It could lead into insights into some causes of miscarriage, and provide us with information about developments in infertility treatment.”

In the long term, the doctor has said the research could mean the embryo with the greatest chance of developing could be implanted, or genetics could be “tweaked”, to maximise an embryo’s chance of survival. Gene editing in human embryos for research purposes is less controversial than the possibility of editing embryos which, subsequently, develop into foetuses and are born. Some scientists are worried about unforeseen consequences later in life of children with edited genomes, and even the possibility of “designer” babies. They have called for a ban on editing embryos for clinical purposes until much more is known. “This is the first step on a path that scientists have carefully mapped out towards the legalisation of (genetically modified) babies,” warned David King, of anti-gene manipulation group Human Genetics Alert, about Dr Niakan’s application.

7,557 firms have gone to the wall THE financial crisis has been felt by all businesses in the archipelago and, for some, it has led to their doors being closed for good. Despite recent signs of improvement, a total of 7,557 local companies disappeared between 2007 and 2015. That’s 5.4% of all registered businesses. This percentage is higher than that registered in the whole of Spain during the same period - 4.5% - and the number of companies going to the wall is an eye-watering 149,779. And it has been hard

for those who have survived, 56.4% of businesses here saying they have seen a downturn in trade, with the national average standing at 73.1%. However, data from the Central Business Directory is not all bad because the green shoots of recovery are appearing. In Spain last year, there were 40,308 new registered businesses, while there were 3,291 in the Canary Islands. That is an increase nationally of 2.6% compared with last year, and a rise of 1.3% locally.

Big Mac spreads the word swiftly THE McDonald’s mighty empire has captured 40% of Spain’s fast-food market, thanks to its 474 restaurants throughout the country. And Spain’s hunger for its famous burgers and bagels is set to increase by 50% in the next five years, according to a study by Ma-

drid’s EAE Business School. Other fast-food companies competing with the Big Mac global chain are Burger King, which has a 22.5% share, Pans & Company (4.4%), Madrid-based chain Rodilla (3.6%), with Colonel Sanders’ KFC struggling with at just 3.1%.

A month of doom as eight women perish JANUARY proved to be a tragic first month of 2016 in Spain, with no fewer than eight women killed through domestic violence.

Officials say the women were killed in attacks sparked by their current or ex-partners. Just one month of January has seen more such murders in the past 14 years, nine victims in Spain being registered in 2006. The current figure repeats the number of victims dying in the first month of 2003, 2011 and 2012, which suggests that the 2004 legislation, aimed at combating domestic violence, passed by Congress, has had little effect. Yet there have been improvements to the man-

ner in which authorities have been helping victims. More women are calling 016, the telephone hotline on which they can seek attention anonymously. The service, launched in 2007, received a record 82,000 calls last year. In addition to the eight victims, another case last month saw the horrific death of a 17-month-old, thrown out of an apartment window by a 30-yearold man. It happened after the distraught mother found him trying to abuse the baby sexually. The 18-year-old mother was hospitalised after being beaten by the aggressor, who was later arrested and is now in custody. Spanish apples head for India APPLES grown in the city of Lleida, west of Catalonia, will next week be shipped to India for the first time.

This new trade route has been made possible following joint work for many months between Afrucat (Catalan Fruit Association) and India’s Ministry of Agriculture. India produces and consumes large volumes of apples, but the industry lacks infrastructure, which makes the country a strong importer. Manuel Simon, manager of Afrucat, says: “Initially, the fact that the Indian market is so brand-oriented was a major challenge for Spanish apples, which do not have any established brands. “The United States is carrying out very strong promotional campaigns for its brands with large investments.” But he stressed: “Spanish apples will compete with an advantage, thanks to their high Brix (farm-fresh and organic) levels, as Asian markets really ap-

preciate sweetness. For this reason, with the exception of the Granny Smith, which is more sour, all varieties will be fit for this market.” With the opening of the Indian market, there will be no borders for Spanish apples in the India, Hong Kong and Singapore markets, which are the gateway to the Asian market. The main features of these markets are their huge populations, the large number of middleclass people with high purchasing power and the overall appreciation they have for fruit. And in India, fruit is considered a precious gift at big celebrations. India’s apple imports amount to around 200m kilos per year, with China, the US and Chile as its main suppliers, with 75, 59 and 47 million kilos exported, respectively. For years, large Euro-

pean apple producers have also been present in this market through bilateral agreements, albeit with small volumes. The ranking is topped by Italy, (4m kilos), France (2m), Belgium (1m) and Poland, with about 0.2m kilos. Simon points out that this is good news for the Spanish production, since it is a closer market than China and a large consumer of fruits and vegetables. Also, exporting apples to India will also establish trade relations for the shipping of more stone-fruit, which “has more potential for export”. He adds: “Our challenge in the future will be for Spanish apples to become more appreciated in the domestic market. We do not produce that much, so we rely on many foreign markets.”

Safe Investment – Smooth Returns

January 2016 has been the worst opening for stock markets in the last decade. The world stock markets have taken a huge drop in value since the start of 2016. The falls have been in the region of 15-20% depending on where the investment has been allocated. The UK, Europe, and the USA are showing losses of around 1215%, and the emerging markets of Russia, Brazil, and China are down by 20% plus. This again has shown how volatile and fickle world stock markets can be and how quickly shares and equities can fall in value. Investors have to ask if they want to expose themselves to this risk or do they want a safe investment with a steady smooth return. Take a look at the graph on the Prudential Protected Cautious fund that has produced smooth returns of 6 to

7% over the last four years. It has also provided a Capital Guarantee on client’s initial investment and ask yourself which you would prefer – • Stock market fluctu-

ations • Risk of losing your capital • Sleepless nights OR • A Capital Guarantee on your money

• A steady return of 6-7% per annum • Access to your capital at any time • Option to take regular income payments • Spanish tax compliant investment

If you want SECURITY If you want LIQUIDITY If you want RETURNS Then call us to discuss this investment to see if it is suitable for your needs with no obligation whatso-

ever. To all of our clients in the Canaries who already have this investment and have had a great return in 2015; here’s looking forward to 2016 to providing more of the same!

Doctors’ double delight after separating babies DOCTORS in Switzerland have created medical history by separating eight-dayold conjoined sisters, believed to be the youngest babies ever parted successfully.

The twins, born in December, were fused at the liver and chest, and Swiss media say doctors had originally planned to separate them when they were several months old. But they brought forward the operation, which carried a 1% chance of succeeding, when each baby suffered a life-threatening condition. The twins, named Lydia and Maya, were born eight weeks prematurely at Bern’s Inselspital hospital, along with a triplet who was fully separate and healthy. They weighed just 2.2kg (4lb 14oz) together, and one had too much blood, and very

high blood pressure, while the other one did not have enough. The 13-strong medical team, who took five hours to separate the girls on 10th December, said the twins had been “extensively conjoined on the liver, but had all vital organs”. “Such small conjoined siblings have never been successfully separated before,” said a hospital spokesperson. Steffen Bergehead of the hospital’s paediatric surgery, paid tribute to the medical staff, saying: “The perfect teamwork of physicians and nursing personnel from various disciplines were the key to success here. We are very happy that the children and parents are faring so well now.” The girls, who had further surgery to close their abdominal walls, are now recovering in a paediatric intensive care ward. And the delighted spokesperson said they were “still very small but developing well”.

DJ legend Wogan dies SIR Terry Wogan, the veteran BBC broadcaster and friend to millions, died on Sunday at the age of 77 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. His family said in a statement: “Sir Terry Wogan died today. He passed away surrounded by his family. While we understand he will be missed by many, the family ask that their privacy is respected at this time.” Sir Terry leaves Helen, his wife of 50 years, and their three children. The couple also had a daughter who died in infancy, which destroyed his faith in Catholicism and he became a selfconfessed atheist. The Limerick-born, happy-go-lucky Irishman, always with a twinkle in his eyes, had a 50-year career on radio and television, including presenting Wake up to Wogan on BBC Radio 2 and the Wogan chat show on BBC1. He was also the voice of Eurovision in the UK for many years and had been involved in the Children in Need appeal since it began in 1980, helping to raise hundreds of millions of pounds for Children in Need. His best friend, Father Brian D’Arcy, who visited him a few days before the end, said the presenter clutched his hand and even joked with him, saying: “Everything’s going to be all right, old boy. You’d better say a few prayers if you have any influence up there - if there’s anyone up there.” Father D’Arcy added: “You know how he used to go on with this atheism. But I knew the shake hands was

the last shake hands I’d ever have with him. If there’s not room for Terry Wogan in heaven, the God I’ve been preaching is way off.” Tony Hall, BBC director general said: “Terry truly was a national treasure. For 50 years, Sir Terry graced our screens and airwaves. “His warmth, wit and geniality meant that for millions, he was a part of the family. Today we’ve lost a wonderful friend. “He was a lovely, lovely man and our thoughts are with his wife and family.” Radio 2 controller Bob Shennan said he was “one of the greatest and most popular radio hosts this country has ever heard”. He added: “His millions of listeners adored him, as did his whole Radio 2 family. We will miss him enormously.” Sir Terry originally went into banking after college, before joining Ireland’s national Radio Eireann as a newsreader and announcer. He moved into light entertainment, as a DJ and host of TV quiz and variety shows in Ireland, before joining the BBC, where he would stay for the rest of his career.

He presented the breakfast show from 1972 to 1984, as The Terry Wogan Show, and then from 1993 to 2009 as Wake Up To Wogan. He built up a huge fan base, dubbing his audience the TOGs, or Terry’s Old Geezers and Gals. When he broadcast at breakfast for the final time, he told listeners: “The years together with you have not only been a pleasure but a privilege. You have allowed me to share your lives with you. “When you tell me how important I have been in your lives, it’s very moving. You have been every bit as important in mine.” His BBC Radio 2 colleagues paid heartfelt tribute to him. Simon Mayo described him as a “radio genius”, adding: “The staple of all great radio is the friend behind the microphone - and he was the ultimate friend behind the microphone.” Ken Bruce said: “The voice which has been with us all our lives, in many cases, is no longer there. He was part of the fabric of our lives in so many ways.” The man you met off

camera was very much the man you heard on air, and it was obviously a gift … a gift for sounding natural, real. Fellow Radio 2 presenter Paul O’Grady said there was no falsehood about him, and that captures it perfectly. “People can sniff out inauthenticity in a second and, whether you liked him or not, there was nothing phony about him. “However, what made that extraordinary is that he could access that wit again and again, year after year, in front of huge audiences on Children in Need and the Eurovision Song Contest.” Graham Norton, who took over as Eurovision commentator from Sir Terry, said on Twitter: “He made it seem effortless and, for a young boy in Ireland, he made it seem possible.” Dara O Briain tweeted: “Terribly sad news about Terry Wogan dying. Hard to quantify what he achieved, not just in broadcasting but for the Irish in Britain.” And Irish President Michael D Higgins said: “Always proud of his origins in Limerick, he made many returns to his native country for television and radio projects. “His rise to the top of radio listenership in the UK was a great tribute to his breadth of knowledge and, in particular, his unique, very personal sense of humour.” Few people knew he was seriously ill, but he made his final Radio 2 appearance on 8th November last year and withdrew from presenting Children in Need just days later.

Recyling restaurants are to be rewarded LA CALETA restaurants La Masía del Mar and Paquita Bello have won recycling awards as part of the Aqui se recicla (We recycle here) platform.

It’s a joint initiative between Adeje Council and Ecoembes, developed by the Canarian Sustainability and Green Environment Association. The aim is to increase recycling and the use of yellow containers in bars and restaurants in the borough. Adeje Environment Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas said: “With this pioneering programme in the Canaries, Adeje is continuing to underline the importance of recycling. “Since the introduction of this initiative, we have seen a 30% increase in the use of yellow containers in La Caleta, and it is the res-

taurants and businesses themselves which have actively participated by placing the containers in their premises.” She added: “Adeje residents are very conscious of the need to recycle and, in general, levels of recycling in the borough are very positive, although the intention is to increase the practice even more.” The winning establishments, La Masía del Mar, and a worker from Paquita Bello, demonstrated excellent levels of raising awareness of the need to separate rubbish and use the different containers correctly. Overall, 14 establishments participated in the programme. The Aqui se recicla initiative is a pioneering programme in the islands and for now, is being run in Adeje and Gran Canaria’s San Bartolomé de Tirajana only. The objective is to get restaurants directly involved in material separation and recycling into the yellow containers, with owners and

workers in the participating restaurants directly involved. There is a primary phase, in which restaurant staff are trained by the project leaders and are given mini yellow containers, special bags, and information materials. Then, over a six-week period, a series of visits take place to help clarify any doubts or questions, help in the recycling and bring new containers or bags when needed. Camren Martínez Dorta, President of the Canarian Sustainability and Green Environment Association, said: “The owners and employees of the restaurants in La Caleta have been very open to the idea, and the level of participation has been remarkably high.” The project is part of a regional plan to increase rubbish separation and recycling in the islands as a whole. Tinixara Mesa Moreno, a specialist from Ecoembes in the Canaries, said: “All Canarians need to be

proud of their environment and want to care about how they deposit rubbish, making sure it is properly separated and placed in the right containers. “If we place the wrong items in incorrect containers, we undermine the good efforts of the rest because every time that happens, the process of recycling is halted.” Ecoembes is a nonprofit body, overseeing the management of plastics, cans, and cartons (yellow containers) and cardboard and paper (blue containers) throughout Spain. During 2014, some 1.2 million tons of plastics, cartons, paper and cardboard were recycled in Spain, meaning a direct reduction in CO2 gas emissions, equivalent to the emissions of a quarter of cars registered in Madrid. This also led to a reduction in energy consumption of 3 Mwh, equal to the annual energy consumption of 31% of smart phones in the country.

Irish Prime Minister sparks massive row THE build-up to the Republic of Ireland’s General Election campaign has kicked off with an almighty row.

Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Enda Kenny walked straight out of Parliament (Dáil) within seconds of announcing he was going to see President Michael D Higgins, the Head of State, at his official residence (Aras an Uachtarain). Kenny made the briefest of statements to announce that the Dáil would not sit again until 10th March and later announced on Twitter that the election would be held on Friday, 26th February. The Fine Gael leader wished TDs (independents) not seeking re-election the best for the future - and wished good luck to those going before the people. He added, in Gaelic: “St Brigid’s Day has passed and spring has arrived.” Afterwards, he and Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) Joan Burton quickly left the chamber as opposition TDs asked if they were allowed to speak on a motion to suspend the Dáil. However, the Ceann Comhairle (Speaker of the House) said there was nothing he could do as Mr Kenny had left. Mr Kenny emerged from Government Buildings shortly after 10am accompanied by Ms Burton. They shook hands and Mr Kenny quipped, “this is not goodbye”, before being taken by a State car on the short journey to the President’s dwelling. Ms Burton then outlined her views on the coalition’s achieve-

ments to reporters, saying: “The real test of any government is whether it leaves the country in a better place ,and I can say of the Labour Fine Gael Government that we have definitely done that. “We inherited a ruin and we’ve rebuilt it. Yesterday’s unemployment figures down to 8.6% from a high of over 15% - is a real indication that people all over Ireland are getting back to work. They’re getting employment and they’re opening up businesses. “That’s happening not just in the city areas but right across the country. In addition, we’re investing and we have ambitious programmes to invest into education, into health, into housing while under the constraints the Government operated under, particularly in the first couple of years.” She added: “We couldn’t do everything we would have wished. But we now have a very ambitious capital programme, particularly for areas that need special attention such as housing and health.” When asked to respond to opposition criticism on the manner in which Mr Kenny told Parliament he was off to see President Higgins, Ms Burton said he had done it “exactly right” and followed the constitution. “On previous occasions, people have gone to see the President on a Sunday morning,” she recalled. “So I think the Taosieach has done it very, very well - gone in and said what is constitutionally required- and he’s now left to meet President Higgins.”

Tesco closing its all-night service AS demand for night-time shopping wanes and online purchasing grows, supermarket giant Tesco is closing its 24-hour opening service at almost 20% of its stores.

The country’s largest grocery chain said there would be a “minimal” impact on jobs by limiting trading hours to between 6am to midnight at 76 of its 400 24-hour stores from 14th March. Tesco said: “The move to reduce hours means more Tesco colleague time will be freed up to replenish products on the shelves overnight. That will mean better availability of products and better-looking stores when they open their doors to customers each morning.” The company argued that it was being “responsive” to the way customers wanted to shop, and making “more efficient use of Tesco time and resources”, resulting in savings which could be passed on to customers. CABILDO Transport Minister Manuel Ortega has highlighted the need to restrict and regulate the use of private vehicles in Tenerife’s major urban areas.

Among the actions that could be included within the “Mobility Plan of Tenerife” - the first new draft of its kind by the Cabildo since 2012 - are plans for traffic control in the town centres and more parking areas. Ortega said: “Last year, despite the clear signs of economic improvement, getting people to use public transport didn’t recompany’s retail director, said: “We’re always thinking about how to serve our customers better in each of our stores and with the growth of online grocery shopping, these stores saw very few customers during the night.” The UK’s grocery industry remains locked in a fierce price war as they battle to match heavy discounters such as Aldi and Lidl. Despite the “big four” enjoying a stronger Christmas season, they remain under pressure to cut costs and

enhance their offerings to lure back shoppers amid their market shares sinking.. While Tesco continues to dominate, its business was previously dented by a lack of investment in stores as it spent aggressively abroad and on accommodating changing shopping habits - including a greater focus on convenience. It was accused of taking its eye off the ball in its core market as sales fell, allowing competitors to steal a march on it.

Its UK like-for-like sales rose 1.3% in the six weeks to 9th January compared with the previous year, handing its new chief executive Dave Lewis a morale boost following the torrid tenure dominated by legacy issues since he took the role. He is still handling the fall-out from the FTSE 100 firm’s massive profits’ overstatement, which has left it facing the prospect of action by shareholders, forcing Tesco to overhaul the way it handles its suppliers.

Donald Trumped! DONALD Trump, the motor-mouth Republican, has received a setback as he begins the long journey on his search to become President of the United States. Billionaire Trump, so sure he would win the opening Presidential-nominating contest, was forced to concede defeat to Texas Senator Ted Cruz in Iowa. Ultra- conservative Cruz led the businessman by 27.7% to 24.3%, with 99% of precincts reporting results in the rural Midwestern US state. Florida Senator Marco Rubio, viewed by many Republicans as a more mainstream al-

ternative, showed his potential by closing in on Trump, gathering 23.1% of the vote to finish third. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton was locked in a dead-heat with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders in a race that is too close to call. Turn-out was huge on both sides for the firstin-the-nation contest to pick candidates for November’s US White House elections. Cruz told supporters during his victory speech in Des Moines: “Tonight is a victory for courageous conservatives across Iowa and across this great nation.” He added: “This result is a blow to the Wash-

ington cartel.” The normally-bombastic Trump toned it down by telling followers: “We finished second and I just want to say, I’m really honoured and I want to congratulate Ted.” But the modesty ended there because Trump predicted he would still win the Republican nomination. Rising star Rubio told supporters: “Tonight, we have taken the first step, but an important step, towards winning this election.” The race moves to next week’s New Hampshire primary, where. according to opinion polls, Trump has a stronger showing. More than 180,000 Re-

publican voters turned out on Monday night, compared with about 121,000 in 2012. Long queues were reported at many caucus sites, with many new voter-registrations as Iowans gathered in schools, libraries and private homes. At one Des Moines precinct, Post-it notes were used after ballot papers ran out. The crowded Republican field narrowed on Monday night as Mike Huckabee dropped out of the race. Eleven of the party’s candidates remain in the race after months of rallies, televised debates … and tens of millions of dollars spent on political advertising.

ally work. In fact, the TITSA bus company lost passengers during 2015. “In contrast, we saw a significant increase in new, private vehicles. It is clear that to increase the volume of public transport, we don’t have to concentrate on price or journey times but to restrict the use of cars.” As for TITSA’s 2015 service, Ortega said figures showed that the number of travellers in those areas where action had been taken improved, such as the South and some Santa Cruz bus routes. The state-owned bus company ended last year with a total of 32.6 million passengers - a 1.6% drop of 500,000, compared with 2014.

Jobless tally falling THE number of jobless people in the Canaries fell by 1,545 in January, which is a 0.62% drop from the previous month.

Officially, 245,984 are unemployed in the archipelago according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. The Canary Islands along with the Balearic Islands, are the only community in which unemployment figures dropped last month. With regard to annual data, the number of jobless fell by 13,759 in the Archipelago, which represented a 5.30% decrease over the same month last year. By provinces in the monthly data, there was a greater decrease in Las Palmas, where it fell 1,042 (-0.80%), while Santa Cruz de Tenerife had a 503 (-0.43%) drop.

Women still encompassed the largest number of unemployed, with 129,740, while jobless men reached 116,244. Also, among the under25s, the unemployment rolls stand at 13,300 youngsters. Overall in the country, the unemployed registered at the offices of the Public Employment Services (formerly INEM) rose by 57,247 in January, representing a 1.4% increase over the previous month, leaving the out-of-work total at 4,150,755. This rise in unemployment, which occurs after two consecutive months of decline, was less pronounced in the month of January since 2004, when figures rose by just over 51,000 people. In January 2015, unemployment increased by 77,980 people, while in all the January months from 2008-2014, increases of more than 100,000 unemployed were recorded.

ALLEGATIONS that China’s largest online finance business swindled 900,000 investors out of more than £5bn have led to the arrest of 21 Ezubao workers. The internet peer-topeer lender, which boasted of connecting wouldbe borrowers with people willing to invest, is said to have faked 95% of the investment opportunities on its website. Chinese state media has carried a confession from one of the company’s executives in which he described Ezubao as a “typical Ponzi scam”. Ding Ning, chairman of the lender’s parent company, was among those detained in what could be China’s biggest financial fraud in history. The company’s website has been shut down and its Beijing offices appear to have closed, with investigators confirming they have seized and frozen the firm’s assets. Ezubao allegedly swindled 900,000 investors out of £5.3bn, and a “confession” by Ding Ning has been aired on Chinese state television Recently, people who lost money have been protesting in the capital and demanding their cash be returned.

Human rights groups have condemned the practice of airing confessions from suspects on state television, because they believe it can compromise a person’s right to a fair trial. Mr Ding has, reportedly, said his company spent 800 million yuan (£85m) on corporate information, which was then used to fabricate the crowd-funding projects. Ezubao grew at breakneck speed following its launch in July 2014, promising investors that businesses which borrowed money would pay the cash back with interest rates of between 9% and 14.6% - a better return than that on offer by state banks. According to police, Ezubao claimed it had offered loans to 207 companies, but actually, just one firm had received investment. Xinhua reported that the company would pay off old debts when it received capital from new investors. Authorities in China have struggled to regulate online investments, and the government is believed to be concerned that the market could put social stability at risk

ARE you an expat? Do you still have funds in Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) in the UK? And are you still contributing annually into your ISA? If the answer is Yes, please read on.

And in 2015-2016, you can invest a total of £15,240. Should you move abroad, you can’t put money into your ISA afterwards, unless you’re a Crown employee working overseas, or your his/her spouse or civil partner. However, you can keep your ISA open and still get UK tax relief on

money and investments held in it. In addition, if you have a fixed rate ISA which has, or will mature while you are still living abroad, you cannot renew it in another ISA. You must move it elsewhere. You can, of course, pay into your ISA again if you return and become a UK resident, subject to the annual ISA allowance. So, as an ex-pat, what should you be doing with any possible, surplus funds you shouldn´t be investing in UK-based ISAs? If we consider that a standard “easy access”

ISA is paying around 1.5% or 1.6% AER, Notice Account ISAs are paying around 1.75% AER (on balances over £24,000) and fiveyear Fixed Term ISAs are paying 2.55% AER (on minimum balances of £5,000), are you really making the most of your investments, even if the interest is tax free? Poor are badly hit by tax cuts THE Spanish economy grew 0.8% in the fourth quarter of 2015, compared with the same period in 2014, and the year closed with a growth of 3.2%.

The quarterly growth rate, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE), was identical to that of the previous three months. And the end-of-year mark was an impressive 1% higher that the Government predicted at the start of 2015.

Meanwhile, Gestha Union experts estimate that the drop in income-tax deductions, which came into force last month, representing a new rebate of up to 3% in payroll deductions, will result in an average saving of some 80 euros per year for all taxpayers. These new measures will cost the public coffers 1.5bn euros and the public-deficit target set for Spain, which was 4.2% of GDP in 2015, will be 2.8% in 2016. The new rate, which will be applied to the general tax base, reduces the number of

tax sections (from seven to five). And, according to Gestha: “It again highlights the inequality of the Spanish tax system since it affects the progressiveness of the income tax as it mostly benefits the highest incomes, irrespective of their family situation.” Gestha says the tax savings for those who earn up to 30,000 euros will be 1.63%, compared with 1.82% for those earning up to 40,000 euros, which is about five times less than the savings achieved by those who earn a million euros or more.

Gestha General Secretary José Maria Mollinero said: “The tax cut has a very unequal look to it. It will allow greater savings for those who have a greater revenue. There is no equity in this.” As for the reduction of tax rates on the savings base, as calculated by Gestha, the main beneficiaries are also the wealthiest “In particular, we talking about those respondents who earn more than 150,000 euros, and whose income from savings are, on average. Between 57,412 and 674,090 euros.” said Mollinero.

Rugby Union Six Nations

Don't Miss...

Scotland v England Saturday 6th February, BBC1, 16.30 John Inverdale hosts live coverage as Scotland and England kick off their Six Nations campaigns at Murrayfield. Scotland are looking to bounce back after ending up with the Wooden Spoon last year, and will have a point to prove on their home ground, having been whitewashed 20-0 the last time they hosted England. But Vern Cotter’s side can take heart from their most recent competitive action which came in the World Cup, when they came agonisingly close to beating Australia and reaching the semi-finals. The World Cup was a well-documented disaster for England, and led to the departure of head coach Stuart Lancaster. Eddie Jones is the new man in charge, and the Australian will be hoping for a winning start to his reign as England set out to win the tournament in which they have finished second for the last four years. Andy Nicol, Jerry Guscott and 2003 World Cup winner Mike Tindall will be offering expert analysis from the studio, while Brian Moore and Chris Paterson will be in the commentary box alongside Andrew Cotter.

Sea Cities - Tyneside BBC2, 19.00

Around the coast of Britain are cities where the sea shapes people’s lives. The Shields Ferry is legendary on the Tyne - like its Skipper, Sting look-alike Chris McGuinness, who’s not averse to opening the odd supermarket for extra cash. The Shields Ferry is legendary on the Tyne - like its Skipper, Sting look-alike Chris McGuinness, who’s not averse to opening the odd supermarket for extra cash. But passenger numbers have fallen in recent years, forcing ferry manager Carol Timlin to get creative to try and bring in extra money: she’s sold all the tickets for a sing-along cruise down the Tyne. But will ferry staff cope with the busiest day of the year, when the world’s biggest half marathon, the Great North Run, rolls into town? Huge gas modules are being built at Tyneside’s largest manufacturing yard OGN, but the company faces a challenging future. For the shrunken workforce, including 56 year-old plater Stephen Goicoechea, it’s a worrying time. Many, like him, may have to travel far afield to get work if the yard goes under. Union shop steward Terry Telford is keeping the faith (something he says he has experience of, being a Newcastle United fan). Meanwhile, students Chris Falconer and Ryan Bird are training to be deck officers at the oldest Marine School in the world based in South Shields. We see them put through their paces in a dramatic simulator assessment in charge of a ship, before the toughest test of all - a verbal grilling in the Maritime and Coastguard Agency oral exams. And former tug-master turned lecturer at the School, Tommy Proctor organises the annual rowing race on the Tyne.

Guided by presenters Giles Coren and social historian Polly Russell, the family’s entire experience is underpinned by The Family Expenditure Survey, a government study which ran from the 50s right through to 1999. The survey gives us the best clue as to what families were doing with their leisure time across the five decades. As they enter the 50s, it’s goodbye to their flat-screen TV and hello to a piano, some darning and a pipe to keep them amused. Dad Rob finds out that he’s expected to be handy with a tool kit, while mum Steph, who normally works full time, discovers that it’s not her tablet or phone that she misses, but the family’s white goods. But there are upsides 16-year-old Daisy gets a chance to learn ballroom dancing courtesy of Angela Rippon, while 12-year-old Seth discovers the joy of the great outdoors.

Until 450,000 years ago, Britain was linked to continental Europe by a massive chalk land bridge crossed by mammoths and even early humans. But a mega flood of extraordinary proportions shattered the land bridge in a onein-a-million-years catastrophic event, helping Britain to become an island. Dr Tori Herridge journeys back in time to see the evidence for this geological catastrophe. She starts on the coast of Norfolk, to discover what life was like before the ancient mega flood. She meets an amateur palaeontologist who uncovered the biggest complete mammoth skeleton ever found and sees the 850,000-yearold footprints left by a family of early humans and amazingly preserved in mud.

Nature’s Miracle Orphans

5th February - 11th February 2016

Sun 7th Feb

BBC1, 17.35

All over the world today, vulnerable orphan animals are surviving against the odds thanks to the dedicated people who go to extraordinary lengths to save them. This new four-part series, presented by zoologist Lucy Cooke and biologist Patrick Aryee, will show viewers the plight of many of our planets most beloved and endangered animals. Patrick visits rescue centres in Costa Rica while Lucy is in Southern Africa following young animals, many of whom had a traumatic start in life, as they make their long journeys back to the wild. In episode one we meet baby African elephant Moyo, who almost drowned as a newborn - an early childhood experience that has left him with emotional scars and a fear of water. Discovered alone and close to starvation on the banks of a river, Moyo was taken to a rehabilitation centre in Zimbabwe and has been living with his carer Roxy since he was just a few days old - and has found a special place in her heart and on her sofa. Meanwhile in Costa Rica, Patrick meets Robin, the orphaned anteater. He’s ready to return to the wild, but first Robin must prove to surrogate mum Pedro that he can fend for himself, as they have to break their very close bond. Each facing a unique set of challenges, this series tells the story of the people who will do what it takes to release these survivors back to the wild – with immense skill, dedication, patience and love.

Greece With Simon Reeve BBC2, 20.00

In this two-part series, Simon Reeve travels to Greece, one of the most beautiful, troubled, and extreme countries in Europe. Travelling from the Islands of the Aegean to the rugged and mountainous north, Simon gets behind the picture-postcard image to learn more about Greece and the Greeks - and why the country has faced a seemingly endless economic crisis. Along the way he encounters an extraordinary cast of characters, from rebel monks and gun-toting priests, to desperate migrants and an injured bear cub. The first leg of Simon Reeve’s journey around Greece takes him from the holiday islands of the Aegean to the capital city of Athens. Off the tiny island of Pserimos Simon goes underwater with the divers who still hunt for the sea creature which made these islands rich: the natural sponge. He hears how the island’s population is struggling in the face of declining stocks and the wider economic crisis. Travelling onto Lesvos, just a few miles from the Turkish coast, Simon encounters another of the huge challenges facing the country: the migrant crisis. The island has become Europe’s frontline, with thousands of refugees arriving daily, fundamentally changing the lives of the islanders.

The Great Interior Design Challenge BBC2, 19:00 Amateur designing competition. The second heat begins. Another group of designers compete across three knock-out rounds for one place in the quarter-final. They are engineering manager Rob, DIY store worker Angelica, ex-visual merchandiser Sarah and textiles lecturer Lucy. They are in the beautiful thatched village of Briantspuddle, Dorset. The designers must transform a bedroom each in just three days with £1,000 and the help of a small team. Rob has a monumental battle producing all the repurposed furniture and light fittings he has designed. Angelica shows off some brilliant ideas for banishing tatty woodchip walls in her room. Sarah faces an uphill battle persuading her clients to trust her bold choice of floral wallpaper on all four walls of her country scheme. Meanwhile, Lucy is taking a big risk bringing a modern design to this traditional cottage. Sophie Robinson and Daniel Hopwood judge which three designers show the most potential.

Meanwhile Clare bumps into her old friend Neil Ackroyd, who has recently moved to Hebden Bridge and works in the local corner shop. Will old flames reignite? Other relationships are thrown into turmoil as Catherine kindly takes in son Daniel after he is thrown out of his house, while Detective Sergeant John Wadsworth faces a tough decision when his girlfriend unexpectedly turns up at the house he shares with his wife and children. When another dead body is found the police begin to suspect a serial killer is behind the murders, and Detective Superintendent Andy Shepherd and Detective Inspector Jodie Shackleton are called in to head up the case. Britain’s mobile phone sales force battle it out to be named the best mobile phone salesperson in the country. It is the second round of the regional phase of the competition. For many, it is the first time they will come face to face with a panel of judges designed to expose and exploit every weakness. What were petty rivalries become full-blown conflicts as 24 salespeople compete for eight places in the grand final. For Callum Higson of Worle, it is a chance to show that big doesn’t always mean better as he faces off against some industry giants. It is also an opportunity for EE favourite Jonny Brown to strut his stuff to the judges and fellow competitors. Through a series of challenges, testing product knowledge and sales techniques, the judges will be able to clearly see who has what it takes and who is found wanting. Personal frailties are exposed and for many the pressure just becomes too much in this emotive and heartwarming episode.

How To Die: Simon’s Choice

5th February - 11th February 2016

W ednesda y

BBC2, 21.00

Made in partnership with The Open University, How To Die: Simon’s Choice tells the poignant story of one man facing the unimaginable decision of whether to end his life at a suicide clinic. “I thought they’d be indifferent to the timing of my demise,” says Simon Binner in this observational documentary about his life and eventual death. “I was so wrong.” Simon, whose story went public and became the subject of media attention following his death last year, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of motor neurone disease in January 2015 and given just two years to live. After telling his loved ones that he was considering ending his life at an assisted suicide clinic in Switzerland, Simon and his family and friends grapple with huge moral, emotional and legal dilemmas around his choice. As this moving film shows, their conflicting perspectives mean that his heart wrenching decision lies in the balance until the very end. In a British television first, the documentary gains access to Switzerland’s second largest assisted suicide clinic, the Eternal Spirit centre, where Simon initially makes an appointment to end his life on a set date - his birthday. Simon’s final moments were filmed by medical professionals at the clinic, who are legally required to record their patients’ final decision to take the lethal dose. This has been included within the film, however it does not show the moment of death.

The Great Sport Relief Bake Off BBC1, 20:00 Celebrities take on baking challenges for Sport Relief. Ed Byrne hosts this third episode as four celebrities face their three challenges set by judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. The celebrities taking up the baking baton this time are ex-Spice Girl Geri Horner, BBC world affairs editor John Simpson, footballer and pundit Jermaine Jenas, and 1990s pop sensation Louise Redknapp. The first hurdle for the bakers is the signature challenge, where they take on savoury tarts. Up next it’s the technical challenge, Mary’s chocolate and beetroot tray bake. The bakers must follow a stripped-back recipe to produce this moist, malty sponge, covered with a cream-cheese icing and decorated with candied beetroot. On day two the bakers attempt to make 3D models of their favourite sporting moments out of biscuits.

Great American Railroad Journeys

5th February - 11th February 2016

T hursda y

BBC2, 18:30

Michael Portillo rides the railroads of America, armed with Appleton’s General Guide to the United States, published in 1879. Michael hitches a ride with the Amish in a horse-drawn buggy through rich countryside settled in the 18th century by religiously oppressed Europeans. Charmed by their modest way of life, he watches as they sell their beautiful quilts at auction. In Strasburg, known as Traintown USA, Michael joins the crew of the oldest continuously operated railroad in the United States. After oiling the magnificent engine, he rides on the footplate of the vintage steam locomotive. His last stop on this leg is Gettysburg, the most famous battlefield of the American Civil War, where, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made a momentous speech.

Keeping Up with the Khans Channel4, 21:00 The series that explores the lives and aspirations of new migrants to Britain and the impact of immigration on a single community - Page Hall in Sheffield - continues. This episode focuses on the Roma community. Over the past five years more than 1500 Roma migrants from Slovakia have moved into Page Hall’s tightly packed terraced streets. They’re hoping to build the sort of prosperous lives for themselves that previous generations of immigrants to the area have. Some long-standing white residents and established immigrants have become frustrated with the influx of Roma into the small community and accuse them of anti-social behaviour. Others have tried to give the new arrivals opportunities to make a better life for themselves.

Kevin McCloud follows an epic Grand Design. Back in 2006, Stefan Lepkowski and Ania Shabowska set out to transform a derelict mill cottage in the beautiful Northumberland countryside into a cuttingedge contemporary home. But this was never going to be a simple build. Their ambitious plans turned out to be three projects rolled into one. First, the restoration of a Georgian cottage, then the reconstruction of an old watermill, and third a dramatic modern steel and glass atrium linking it all together. On top of all that, Stefan insisted on doing most of the work himself on a totally unrealistic budget. Over the years Stefan stubbornly refuses to accept help, the bank refuse him any more money, and the project turns into a gruelling battle of wills that almost grinds to a halt. Two children and five years later, through sheer determination, Stefan and Ania finally complete their Grand Design.

LeBlanc hits Top Gear MATT LeBlanc, the former Friends star, will be one of the new Top Gear presenters when the motoring programme returns to BBC Two in May - the show’s first non-British host in its 39-year span.

“Matt’s a lifelong, fellow petrolhead and I’m thrilled he’s joining Top Gear,” said Chris Evans of his new colleague. “Acting out our craziest car notions on screen is a dream job, and I know we’ll both be debating some epic road-trip ideas. “We can’t wait to share what we’ve been up

to on screen later this year.” LeBlanc said: “As a car nut and a massive fan of Top Gear, I’m honoured and excited to be a part of this iconic show’s new chapter. What a thrill!” The 48-year-old US star is best known for his role as Joey Tribbiani in Friends, and, more recently, he has appeared as himself in BBC Two sitcom Episodes. LeBlanc has twice appeared on Top Gear on its popular “star in a reasonably-priced car” segment and holds the record for the fastest-ever celebrity lap. Alan Tyler, the BBC’s acting controller for entertainment com-

missioning, referred to LeBlanc as “a class act and a brilliant signing”. Evans was revealed as Top Gear’s new host last year after the BBC

Cosby’s still facing sexual-assault case VETERAN comedian Bill Cosby, must face a charge of sexual assault after all, a US judge has ruled.

Prosecutors can proceed with their case against the American, who is accused of drugging and fondling a former Temple University employee in 2004. Judge Steven O’Neill issued the ruling at a court in Norristown, just outside Philadelphia, after a two-day hearing. He rejected arguments made by his lawyers on Wednesday that a 2005 ruling made him immune from prosecution. Dozens of women have said the actor assaulted them, but the former TV star is adamant the

encounters were consensual. The next step in this case will be a hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence for him to stand trial. Mr Cosby, once the highest-paid US television star, could be sent to prison for 10 years if convicted. The complaint by Andrea Constand, who has waived her right to anonymity, was first made after the alleged assault. But then - District Attorney Bruce Castor decided in 2005 that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute. However, lawyers who succeeded Mr Castor decided last year to reopen the case after other women came forward with similar accusations. And documents from Ms

Constand’s civil lawsuit against the star were sealed until last summer. Mr Cosby’s defence team this week put Mr Castor on the stand to argue that the criminal case should be dismissed because his decision in 2005 was “binding” and made the actor forever immune from prosecution. Lawyer Chris Tayback, said: “In this case, the prosecution should be stopped in its tracks. Really, what we’re talking about here is honouring a commitment.” But DA Kevin Steele demanded to know what proof there was that Mr Castor ever made such an agreement, since it was never put in writing. And he questioned what authority he had to make such a deal.

opted not to renew Jeremy Clarkson’s contract in the wake of his much-publicised “fracas” with a Top Gear producer. Clarkson subsequently signed up with streaming service Amazon Prime to present a new motoring show with Richard Hammond and James May, his former Top Gear co-presenters. Piers Morgan, tabl o i d - e d i t o r- t u r n e d -

broadcaster, is among those welcoming LeBlanc’s appointment, calling him on Twitter “a brilliant choice with huge global recognition”. LeBlanc hinted at his new role on Wednesday, telling his Twitter followers he had “very cool news coming in the next day or so”. Last year, the actor presented Top Gear: The Races, a standalone spin-off made for

the corporation’s digital download service, BBC Store. The BBC says he will join production on the new series of Top Gear “immediately”. LeBlanc won a 2013 Golden Globe for his role in the Episodes sitcom, a co-production with Showtime, in which he plays an exaggerated version of himself for comic effect. Steve Berry, who copresented Top Gear in the Nineties, told BBC News that LeBlanc was “an odd choice”, despite his “international recognition”. “It does seem odd that the BBC will use an actor in a factual entertainment show,” he said, suggesting that the strength of the show’s most recent line-up lay in the fact that they were “all experienced motoring journalists”. He added: “When Jeremy Clarkson gives you an opinion, you can respect it. When an actor says that line, does it have that authority?”

By Vanessa Vee IF you have driven through Los Cristianos at some stage this week, I am sure you will have noticed the Big Top, just behind the Valdes Centre.

We are so lucky to receive yet another excellent entertainment opportunity, this time the Circo Alegria on Ice. I have been assured that this is a new-generation circus, with no animals taking part in this spectacular. That really pleases me, but I suppose it’s difficult to get iceskates on tigers and elephants anyway! Translated as Joy Circus On Ice, this show merges traditional circus with innovation, introducing spectators to a performance in which artists perform

circus-act skills while skating. I’m told that Circo Alegria is a quantum leap for the circus world, combining the musical style with aerial, acrobatic and comedy routines on an “ecological” ice rink which, apparently, does not consume energy. Set in an island in the Arctic Ocean, the show tells the story of Lisa and Luke, a seal and a hunter who cross their lives forever. Luke has reached the Arctic to complete his

death, the Russian swing, trampolines and many other surprises. It sounds great fun to me, and I will definitely be attending with my children, just as I did as a child, although animals were used in those days. Circo Alegria will be in Los Cristianos for 10 days, from today (Friday) until 14th February. For any other information, call 662 612 826. The box office, located at the venue, is open for the following hours: Monday-Friday, from 11am-2pm and 6pm9pm; Weekends, from 11am-2pm and 3.30pm9pm. Tickets are available at various prices, starting from 10 euros. Interestingly, after a little scoot around the website www.circoalegria. es I discovered some fantastic offers, with up to 50% discounts for online ticket purchases! Talk about impulsebuying … I’ve just bagged four VIP seats on the second row for 71 euros! See you there.

Traffic fines and sanctions

By Emma at Motorworld

THE implementation of a new European Law regarding Traffic fines within member countries was introduced last year.

This law, introduced last May, has enabled authorities in EU countries to follow the fine through to other member states, and carry out legal proceedings there, which should be welcomed by safe drivers. The European Council has now adopted a cross-border exchange of information service concerning traffic offences, which you may have already come across in other parts of our lives, or day-

to-day business. Curiously, Britain, Ireland and Denmark have, for some reason, have been given a two-year extension to implement this law. Currently, this law covers just eight offences for which the exchange of information can be enforced. These are: 1. Speeding 2. Failure to wear seatbelt when driving 3. Failure to stop at a red light 4. Driving when under the influence of alcohol 5. Driving while under the influence of drugs 6. Failure to wear a helmet on a motorcycle or scooter 7. Driving in a lane forbidden to cars: a bus lane, taxi-only lane, etc. 8. Illegally using a mobile phone, any other communication devices, or texting while driving At present there is nothing in place to force foreigners - tourists as opposed to resident foreigners - to pay fines in countries

where they are not resident. But the change does, however, mean that now, there is no escaping the law, or fines imposed. Here in Tenerife and mainland Spain, the DGT has been working towards this implementation to comply with the new law. This means the Traffic Police (Guardia Civil), together with the administrative staff working for the DGT, can start proceedings against said drivers, and that criminal liability will also be ensured.

But, as we are aware, the police in general, and here in the Canaries, are short of staff, and we might not have seen the full effects of this law. But be assured that it is in place and will come. If you are caught speeding, the case will be amplified beyond sanctions and will become a criminal matter, punishable with imprisonment, withdrawal of one’s driving licence, community service and a hefty fine. A driver committing any of the offences

shown can no longer ignore the criminal liability of legal proceedings. This new directive on the cross-border exchange of information is a replica of the policy adopted in 2011 by the EU, ensuring that the police co-operate as a legal basis. But this directive was annulled by the Courts in 2014, setting aside one year for a new legal framework to be established. The objective of the new policy remains the same: to ensure equal

treatment of all drivers, and to improve road safety for all. Under these new rules, all member states can access the national vehicle registers’ data from other countries to ascertain those responsible for these types of offences, which put road safety at risk. The alleged offender may be contacted with a sample letter included in the policy, but this will depend on the individual member state where the offence took place. That’s because each country is allowed to decide how to process the sanctions. Currently, the legislation does not allow states to enforce payments of fines in the event of drivers being resident abroad, But the new directive means the fine can be collected, and judicial proceedings can be started wherever they live, and in whatever country the offence was committed.

They decided to start the Golden Chip shop three years ago after seeing a gap in the market, and it’s safe to say they haven’t looked back since. Recently, they celebrated their third anniversary, and it’s easy to see how they have made the shop so successful. Essentially, it’s just like your local chippy in the UK! We used the call-andcollect option to order our food, so we didn`t have to queue. Even at 2pm on a Thursday, the terrace was full of customers waiting for their freshly-

cooked fish and chips. And that is a main point: freshly-cooked! You cannot enjoy food which is rushed, and a few extra minutes to cook fresh makes all the difference. Now, we do like our food here at the Canarian Weekly and we were not disappointed. After our “courier” arrived back at the office, we unwrapped everything, and the smell of fish, chips and vinegar was making us even hungrier. Like the Bisto Kids in the TV adverts, the staff were leaving their desks and following the noses to the unwrapped feast. Being a social bunch, we set up for tapas style. And then the problems started. Well, I say problems … it was more a nice dilemma. Where do you start when you are faced with the fine chip-shop experience? For me it was fork on chip. I know what you

are thinking: “Chips are chips.” Wrong. Very wrong. Some “local” potatoes here are sweet when fried, or lose their consistency. That’s not a problem for The Golden Chip as they use King Edward potatoes only, imported from the UK, for their chips. And boy, can you tell. They are golden brown and have that taste and texture you remember. Next up is the cod. Which really is cod! You’d be surprised how, in some places, this isn’t the case. At The Golden Chip, it’s a Grade A fish and is battered with fresh beer, which you can taste in the first bite. The cod was light and fell away from the fork - a true sign of perfectly-fried fish. Then it was on to the home-made fish cake, flavoursome and seasoned just right, before a potato scallop and some mushy peas. Then came the big sur-

prise. The Golden Chip is rather proud of its southern fried chicken, and I can tell you it should be. If you have visited the alphabet-named franchise in Santa Cruz, you simply must sample The Golden Chip’s fresh chicken. You will be in no rush to race north as the SFC was spot-on and very well sized - one plump bird! By now, you will have worked out that The Golden Chip is the real deal. And staff have all the little things like chipshop gravy, curry sauce, home-made tartare sauce, gherkins, pickled eggs and pickled onions. Oh, and they also have Pukka Pies and Doner Kebabs with all the trimmings, plus battered sausages and saveloys. The Call and Collect option is a winner - call 922 733 096 or, of course, you can do the drop-in at Coral Mar Square, in Costa del Silencio.

Lucky 7 Brand new to San Telmo strip Lucky 7 Burgers won’t disappoint. Choose all your favourite burgers plus many new variations, including ‘make your own burger’. Good quality meat is used in all the burgers so why not ask for yours to be cooked medium rare? Not just for meat lovers, vegetarian options are available too, don’t miss out on our falalfel burger! Fabulous fresh cocktails and amazing views makes this a perfect setting for everybody to come and enjoy.

Keep fit and live longer!

LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT…

By Val Sainsbury

By Carl Pattison

REGULAR exercise not only reduces your prospects of a heart attack but also boosts the chances of surviving one.

WHEN creating new colours in the salon, especially with new clients, there is always one question we need to ask before starting any colour service: “What’s underneath the colour you already have?”

A study by researchers found that keeping in shape improved life expectancy after suffering a heart attack. It involved more than 2,061 adults, who’d had previous stress tests and later went on to have a first heart attack. Scientists from Detroit’s Henry Ford Health System, and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, said it was the first time such a study had been conducted. “We knew that fitter people generally live longer, but we now have evidence linking fitness to survival after a first heart attack,” said Dr Michael Blaha, assistant professor of medicine at the School of Medicine. “It makes sense, but we believe this is the first time there is documentation of that association.” Scientists focused on medical records of people who had taken a treadmill stress-test before their first heart attack. They used the patient’s achieved metabolic equivalent score (MET) as a quick, though not perfect, measure of energy con-

sumption while resting and during physical activity. The higher the MET score, the more physically-fit the participants were considered to be. The MET scores range from one to 12, with one being considered the equivalent of sitting on the couch. Three is associated with walking, seven with jogging, 10 with skipping rope and 12 with sprinting. Researchers found overall, that among those with MET scores of 10 or higher, there some 40% fewer deaths after a first heart attack, compared with the remaining patients. They also noted that a third of the 754 patients, with MET scores of six or under, died within a year of their first heart attack. Overall, their results showed an 8% deathrisk reduction for each whole-number increase in MET score after a first heart attack. Dr Clinton Brawner, clinical exercise physiologist at Henry Ford Health System, said: “Our data suggest that doctors working with patients who have cardiovascular risk-factors

should be saying, ‘Mr. Jones, you need to start an exercise programme now to improve your fitness and chances of survival, should you experience a heart attack’.” And Dr Blaha emphasised that fitter patients, though still experiencing heart attacks, appeared less likely to die from them. From an initial 69,885-strong pool, the researchers excluded patients who had heart attacks before the stress test, patients who’d never had a heart attack, and patients whose records were missing fitness data from the stress test. This narrowed the final research pool to 2,061 people, with an average age of 62 - of which 38% were women. Dr Blaha said they had not yet determined whether fitter people have less-damaging heart attacks, or whether they have same-sized heart attacks as those who are unfit but survive them better. Decades of research show that cardiovascular fitness does increase blood flow to the heart and may aid the healing process, which is a likely contributing factor to lower mortality rates.

Yes, even if you have covered up an old colour, it is still there underneath your present shade. So how will that effect the colour that’s now being put on? I liken it to painting over a coloured wall … unless it’s stripped down to the bare walls, the colour beneath will have an effect on the desired new colour. It’s as simple as that. So imagine that you have had highlights on your medium-length hair, and you cover them up with a rich

brown. You stay this colour for a few years and then, suddenly, you decide to return to your previous blonde highlights. The new blonde shade will be still be affected by the colours underneath the brown, thus creating a reaction to the shade you are now trying to achieve. There’s no such thing as a magic eraser to strip every colour molecule out of your hair. Once a colour is there, it’s there until it is cut out. So while your sitting in the stylist’s chair for the first time, make sure that he or she asks about ALL your previous colours to ensure an even result. If your hair is short and

you have it coloured regularly, there could be up to 10 colours inside your hair. And if it is long, there could be as many as 40-50 colours hiding inside your hair shaft. That’s because long hair can be eight, nine, 10 years old, which will always affect the outcome of any shade. This is why hair-colouring is best left to the professionals and not messed around with at home. It’s not like a clothing item you can simply take off if you’re not happy with the way it looks. Think about any new colour before you go ahead, and be honest with your stylists to help them achieve perfect results.

Good, the bad & the ugly Healthy eating Part 1, the ugly:

By Nico Gil

of Activate Sports Club HEALTHY eating sounds easy, right? And, in essence, it is: cook as much as possible from scratch, using fresh ingredients (organic wherever possible) and stay away from anything processed. Or, as a nutritionist friend once explained very clearly: “Stay well away from any food or drink that has a TV advert.” In practice, however, it’s not always possible to be at home to make every meal. Sometimes the stress of busy lives means we need to pick up something on the run, or buy some timesaving supermarket options. Here’s the thing: so many of the food items we consider to be

healthy are not - at all! In fact, they are often worse for you than other things we already know to be bad news. If we’re considering the Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Healthy Eating, this is the ugly we’re talking about now, which is the most devious category of all. Looks can be - and most definitely are deceiving. Here are nine products that are definitely not as healthy as they look, and you might be surprised by some of them. 1. Mixed nuts and dried fruit Plain, natural nuts (with no added salt, flavourings or sugar) can be a good high-energy snack, so long as you watch your portion size. But the ready-made packets of dried fruits and nuts are bad news because they nearly always contain added sugars and a lot of salt. Just a small handful can easily add up to over 300 calories. And we all

know how hard it is to stop eating them… 2. Gluten-free products Very fashionable these days, but the only glutenfree products 100% good for you are fresh fruit and vegetables. Others are also quite healthy, but you have to read the labels carefully. Most gluten-free options are highly processed which, even without gluten, are not healthy. 3. Granola/Muesli With dried fruits, rolled oats and, in some cases, added bran fibre, granola and muesli seem so good for you. Read the label and you’ll probably be horrified about how much sugar and how many calories are hidden in there. A normal bowl of muesli for breakfast can contain over 500 calories, and that’s before you add the milk or yoghurt. Ouch! 4. Frozen microwave meals The only good thing about these meals is that they’re easy and quick. That’s it! They

are usually quite low on calories, but only because the portion sizes are often not even large enough to fill a child. Nutrition-wise these meals, however appetising the box may appear, are bad news. They’re normally packed with sodium (salt), preservatives and flavourings, and few vegetables. 5. The vegetarian option Just because you see the word “vegetarian”, don’t automatically think it’s the healthier option. Unfortunately, many veggie options are packed with butter and given an extra helping of cheese. Some alternatives are healthy, of course, full of nutritious vegetables, healthy beans, brown rice, etc. But others aren’t! Meat substitutes, for example, are usually higher than lean meat in salt, preservatives and sometimes, even fat. 6. Salad dressings These may be delicious, but they are really the devil in disguise.

Next time you’re in the supermarket, pick one up and check out the long list of ingredients. It will almost certainly include a few names you not only don’t recognise, but can’t even pronounce! Stick to extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar or lemon, pepper and even mustard. But put the dressings down. 7. Energy drinks/sports drinks Maybe, and it’s only a maybe, if you were competing in an intense triathlon, you might need the help of a specific sports drink to replenish your cells. Generally speaking, these sugarfilled liquids, often with added caffeine and vitamins, are one of the biggest frauds in the industry. Water, water and more water. 8. Vegetable crisps They sound great, taste wonderful and look beautiful - especially when you make them from beetroot and carrots. Sorry to bear

bad news, but the veggie slices are so thin and so processed that most - if not nearly all - of the nutrition from the original vegetable is long gone. 9. Protein bars & shakes Protein is hugely important for our bodies, which need it to build muscle and stay strong. That said, consuming protein bars or shakes regularly isn’t healthy. Not all protein bars are bad for you, but you’d probably be shocked if you took a good look at the nutrition info. Many of the bars contain artificial ingredients and fillers, and as much or more sugar than a bar of chocolate. The shakes are also highly-processed, and sometimes high in sugar. And although they do contain vitamins and minerals, you miss out on having real healthy food if you using them to replace a meal, which is not a good idea. *Don’t miss Part 2 in our series, coming soon!

BE FLASH IN CLASH By Carl Pattison IT’S hot, and it’s not supposed to work. But it does! One of this season’s latest trends, which will be taking us through to the summer months, is clashing colours. Okay, we aren’t talking garish or misjudged items you can’t get away with. This season brings out the colours you would normally wear as one statement colour. But now you’re

mixing it with another one to give a stark complement, and not just a subtle splash of colour. For example, my favourite is Orange with Red, and I know you are thinking: “This is so wrong.” Try Hot Pink with Red, too, because it looks great as a twopiece - for example, the skirt in red with a pink top. Purple looks great mixed with Green, Turquoise and Mustard …

any mix you can dream up to set off your clashing fashion. You can even mix it up with your dress of one bold colour, mixed in with a striking, opposite colour on your shoes, or throw in a clashing handbag to really set it off. The choices are endless for this fun fashion, but don’t be fooled into thinking any clash will do. Do not mix cool colours

with hot colours, and avoid pastels because your colours must be primary. And never throw in more than two clashing colours or it will look as though you got ready in a hurry. Fashion should be all about experimentation: if you don’t try it, you’ll never know that, maybe, without even buying any new items, you already have this year’s must-have look in your wardrobe!

Proof of ownership a must LAST month saw another large influx of dogs to the refuge - 40 were brought in from Arona alone, as well as those from other municipalities with which we also collaborate.

Some of the dogs are lost by their owners, who must, by law, go through a Town Hall procedure to receive an official paper, allowing us to release them from our care. We have very strict procedures in place to protect these dogs to ensure they are returned to their lawful

owners. German travellers wanted Many Accion del Sol animals are sent to Germany for re-homing especially the bigger dogs because they have a better chance of being adopted there. Marion, who runs the refuge, is always looking for people travelling to Germany with Condor, Air Berlin or TuiFly, who would like to help the dogs. It costs nothing but a little bit of your time at the airport while Accion staff check the dogs in. The reservation will be made and paid by the charity. You will be met by staff from our charity sponsors, Aktion Tier, in Germany, and they will

then transport the dogs to their new homes. If you are travelling to Germany and would like to help, please call the refuge on 922 778 630. Doggie items wanted We always need tinned dog food for our older animals, as well as blankets, towels, sheets, doggie toys, and collars and leads. We are also in need of blankets, towels, sheets, doggie toys, and collars and leads. If you can spare any of these items, they would be very much appreciated. Please call us on 922 778 630 if you can help in any way, or visit Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm and Saturdays 1-4pm.

Lowe hits the bullseye THE annual Eric Bristow charity golf day, which attracted 40 players, was another remarkable success.

They teed off first thing in the morning at Los Palos golf course, and competition was fierce. The Stableford tournament was won by John Lowe’s team! The three-time world dart champion had been promising to win the event and, when presented with the trophy, Bristow quipped: “It’s

about time he had a win over me!” The popular event goes from strength to strength, and Bristow told us: “It’s a lovely day. We raised thousands and thousands for the Lions Club as well. “Next year, Sebastian & St James Financial Advisers will be backing the event, and this means we can raise even more money!” After the main presentation, Eric was presented with an award by the Lions Club in recognition of the money his golf day has raised for the charity over the years. Cats Welfare news

The snip is so important C A S T R AT I O N, the snip, or by its correct veterinary name, orchiectomy (also termed gonadectomy), is the surgical removal of a male cat’s testicles. But why bother when they can’t have kittens?

Actually, there are lots of reasons why it is so important, including: *Prevention of unwanted litters: your male cat can’t have kittens, but he’s able to make sure the un-neutered females in your area do! The dumping of unwanted litters of kittens is an all-toocommon occurrence in Tenerife, and it is incredibly hard to find homes for them all. *Prevention of testicular diseases: It is difficult to contract a testicular disease if you have no testicles! Early neutering prevents tomcats from contract-

ing a range of testicular diseases and disorders, including testicular cancer. *Prevention, or at least reduction, of testosterone-related behavioural problems: The testicles are responsible for producing testosterone, causing un-castrated cats to be more aggressive, prone to fighting and roaming to find females. Roaming will also put them in danger of road accidents and getting lost. *Reduction of tomcat urine odours: Entire tomcats can have very pungent urine. Castrated males do not seem to produce as pungent a urine smell and, as an added bonus, neutering will sometimes cure inappropriate spraying. It is thought that neutering can eliminate urinespraying activities in up to 87% of cats. *Reducing the spread of diseases: Feline Leukaemia and Feline Aids are just two of the terrible diseases that can be spread by bodily fluids. Vaccination will help

protect you cat, and so will castration. What are the disadvantages to castration? Well, none really. Postcastration, they may need a few less calories a day but that can be easily controlled by a little less food to ensure they don’t gain weight. It doesn’t cost much around 60 euros or even less – and, contrary to popular belief by some male humans, your pets virility is no reflection of your own! Hammers’ Cup of cheer

FOR some teams, it can be a welcome break from the struggles of the league. But for others, it is a welcome opportunity to try to win some silverware. This week we saw the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup quarter-finals, and the second round of the Tenerife Pool Tables Plate. Tenerife Hammers A had a tough fixture against Rewind A in the Cup, but they made a flying start and raced into a 4-0 lead after some fantastic pool. This spurred Rewind into life and John and Danny won the next two frames to put their team on the front foot. Hammers’ Paul stood firm, though, and claimed the next, but Barry suffered a rare loss and, after two sessions, the home side led 5-3. Rewind needed to start well in the final session, but it didn’t go to plan as Paul and Wez took the frames to ensured a semi-final spot for Hammers A. Palms B, playing on the adjacent table against Exiles A, are enjoying a super season, and they

carried on their excellent league form in this match. They are another team who start well and, once they had their noses in front, they never looked back. Exiles, a solid team, just couldn’t get close and before they had a chance to get into any sort of rhythm, Palms B had put the necessary frames on the board to progress. The Phoenix hosted Palms A for the second week running. And it was déjà-vu for the Palms lads, who again had no luck whatsoever. Just like last week, The Phoenix were superb at taking their chances in what was a very tight contest. Palms should have won the first four frames, but they didn’t and the match was probably lost there and then. Even their late “guest” was turned over, and for the Palms, it’s now all eyes on finishing above Terrace Bantams. In the Plate, Dreamers A were favourites on paper because of their position in Division One. They hosted Division Two Hoppy’s B, which

could have been a potential banana skin. But the Los Cristianos boys have been putting in solid performances, week in and week out. They took the early frames, never looked troubled by the visitors and it didn’t take too long to ensure they would be in the thirdround draw. There was an all-Division One tie on Amarilla Golf, with Terrace Bantams taking on Gaffers B. The home side, lacking form of late, made an excellent start by racing into a 3-1 lead and looking comfortable. But Gaffers are decent players and were the better side in the second session, taking it by the same 3-1 scoreline to level at 4-4. With all to play for, Bantams went with a strong, early line-up and Marky P, followed by Mal, took the first two frames to ensure a draw and a potential play-off game. Adi couldn’t add to this as Rich pulled off a fine five-ball clearance, which left Wilson to beat Sparky … and

it was time for a 13th frame. Mal had won all his three games, so he stepped forward for the Bantams to face Gaffers’ Harry, who had taken just one. So Mal had to be favourite. But for reasons known only to him, he changed his playing style and started to cover pockets and tuck his opponent up. This played into Harry’s hands, and he was down to the black before his opponent. And when the chance came, in it went and Gaffers B were through. Up in Valle San Lorenzo at the Crown, there was a Division Two clash as Tenerife Pool Tables took on in-form Picasso’s A. It looked ominous when the visitors took the first session 3-1, with only Irish Adi picking up a frame for TPT. But they have also been in fine form and hit back with four frames in a row to lead 5-3 into the final furlong. Picasso’s fought back with the next three, and visiting captain Fran had a chance against Harley

But not many people beat the 11-year-old Harley - maybe they don’t want to upset him - and Fran was no different, eventually losing, which led to an extraframe decider. It was Irish Adi against Pete in the showdown, but the frame went against the home side and Picasso’s progressed after a hardfought battle. Sabores, riding high after their first league win,

Hoppys A Splash Bar Hoppys B

were looking forward to pitting their wits against First Division opposition in Bluebell A. The visitors drew first blood, but the confidence was there for the home side as they took four frames in a row to take an early lead. Unfortunately, that was as good as it got for Sabores because it stung Bluebell, who promptly took the remaining seven frames and a place in the thirdround draw.

Emana does it again Nastic 2 CD Tenerife 1

By Roscoe I’M getting a little sick of writing about Achille Emana. He is a fine player and, as I wrote in the season preview, he always, always, always causes Tenerife problems. He set up both goals for Nastic back in August and scored the opener this weekend. The well-travelled Cameroon international was mustard back in the day, and even in the twilight of his career he is a thorn in a defender’s side. His opener was well-

deserved, and Tenerife’s chances suffered another setback when young centre-back Jorge saw his second yellow and then the red card 10 minutes before the break. Jose Naranjo added the second for Nastic seconds later, and that appeared to be that. But Tenerife’s 10 men showed spirit and got themselves back into it straight after the halftime restart. Omar, the Gran Canarian-born youngster, is having a fine campaign, and his fifth goal of the season gave hope. Both sides had chances to add to the scoring, but the hosts got their

deserved win. They are going nicely and will surely be in the promotion shake-up. The Nastic match was the last for Tomas Martinez. The Argentine youngster has returned to River Plate after a frustrating loan spell. There is no doubt he is a good player, but he is too lightweight for this

league. His place in the squad has been taken by the experienced Javi Lara, who is a free agent after playing a few games in the Indian superleague. He’s had a bad run of luck with injuries, but if fit, he is an asset. Last season he was with Eibar in La Liga, and the year before that he was part of the successful Ponferradina side. He is a playmaker and can score a free-kick or two. He told a press conference that while he enjoyed his time in India, it was good to be back in Spain. “I’ve spent my entire time here, and in India the weather was a

little overwhelming,” he said. “It was so easy to lose energy! “I am very happy to be here, I received many offers but this feels right. I want to start training and give a good return for the team.” He’s not lying about the interest because several La Liga sides asked about him. “The conversations I had with both director of football, Alfonso Serrano, and manager Martí were very positive,” said Lara. “I also saw in the people how much affection they had for me, and that makes the decision easy. They wanted me here.”

He has not been fully fit for a while, but says is not a concern “I’ll have some time training with a personal trainer and we’ll see how I am. It is something new to me. I do not feel bad, but I know my main quality is not the physical, but what I do with the ball. “I consider myself a team player, who likes dealing with the ball. I’ve had coaches who see me as a midfielder, others as left-wing, while others like me as an attacking midfielder. I can adapt to various positions.” Lara is set to make the squad for this weekend’s home match with struggling Huesca.

Magic of the Cup

WHILE most teams put their feet up with a nice cup of tea - or something stronger - last Friday, the John Lowe team handicap Trophy and Plate semi-final matches produced a couple surprise results, and plenty of nail-biting drama. In fairness, that couldn’t be said about Pas O Nadas’ Trophy victory at The Phoenix. League matches between the two sides show an aggregate of 16-0 in favour of the hosts. But a fine performance by Nadas, which included Mitch being beaten by young Becks, meant the match was over before the doubles legs were played. The magic of the Cup indeed! The second Trophy clash saw the other Phoenix team, the Flights, holding a hefty 192-point head-start on Gaffers. But Gaffers, making light work of their handicap, held a 3-2

lead at the end of the singles, and went on to book their Final place, Mike Telfer throwing the winning dart in the first doubles leg. Needless to say, plenty of selfies swiftly popped up on the League’s Facebook page! The Plate semi-finals both went down to last-leg drama, with another of the strongly-fancied teams crashing out. The shock upset came at Emerald Shamrocks, who put a 64 point advantage to good use against Division 1 title hopefuls Boothen Army. At three apiece, a tantalising contest culminated with the Shamrocks’ Jamie nailing the last double to secure their place in the Final. There, they will face another team who held their nerve in a last-leg shoot-out. Hoppys Bar conceded 112 points to Palms Sports Bar, and again, a dramatic match went right down to the wire.

Nañdu back in the swing Nañdu 28 El Medano 0 NAÑDU kicked off their Rugby Union season in style with a resounding victory against a tough El Medano Boatmen side. The match was played in El Medano, in good weather, in front of an expectant crowd. After a physical start from both sides, Nañdu took the lead when prop Gregor Prieto muscled his way over from a tappenalty 12 yards out. The try was converted by full-back Francisco Argilio, who was faultless throughout with his kicking. The Boatmen pushed back but were unable to convert good breaks to points. Nañdu then scored their second try, dynamic No.8 Facundo

Patsouris cutting his way through the Boatmen’s defensive tackles to cross the line for a try, also converted by Argilio. Nañdu started to settle, led by their excellent captain and fly-half Jacob Oakenfold. Their pack dominated the set-

pieces, with lock Axel Moran having a superb shift in the engine room. This allowed the backs to flourish, with Ryan Cox, Toby DenholmSmith and Angel all making important yards with strong runs. Despite valiant resist-

ance from the Boatmen, Nañdu increased their lead when wing Edu flew over for the third try, which was also converted, giving the team a 21-0 interval lead. The Boatmen started the second half very strong with good defence

and organisation. A great battle ensued, with the only score coming from Patsouris again. After an excellent build-up, he darted over near the posts for his second try of the day. Fullback Argilio applied the finishing touch again for the final 28-0 scoreline. This was the first Nañdu game for several newcomers, with notable

players missing through injury. A special mention must go to David Tevosyan for his assured performance, covering the unfamiliar position of scrum-half in the absence of Mateo Paolin. All told, it was the best possible start for what promises to be another exciting season for Nañdu rugby club.

By Adi Benson WITH another set of midweek fixtures out of the way, the race for the Premier League title is no clearer. Arsenal have dropped off the pace a little, while Leicester, still hanging in there, have a tough fixture awaiting them this weekend. Man City v Leicester This looks like being the game of the weekend because City know that a win will take them back to the top of the league on goal-difference. They will need to put in a much better performance than the one against Sunderland in midweek, but being at home will give them that extra boost of confidence. But they will certainly miss injured Kevin de Bruyne. Leicester were excellent against Liverpool and they look more and more like the real deal with every passing week. If they can take all three points, they will open up a six-point lead over City. Jamie Vardy is back among the goals, and he will give the City defence all the trouble in the world. Prediction: Draw Last season: 2-0 Liverpool v Sunderland Another midweek defeat and another toothless performance from the Reds has highlighted what a poor squad they have. No real activity in the transfer win-

dow means it will be a long, hard slog to the end of the season for Jurgen Klopp’s men. Goals are a problem, as is decision-making, and how he solves this is anybody’s guess. Sunderland, battling away at the bottom, gave a good account of themselves against City. They need a little luck to start going their way, though, as it is not always enough to play well. A win at Anfield would be a much-needed tonic and could see them kick on. Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-0 Aston Villa v Norwich Villa badly need a win if they are to hang on to to any hope of staying up. But they didn’t manage to add any fresh legs to the squad in the transfer window, giving the impression that they are already planning for life in the Championship. They are 10 points from safety and with 14 games still left to play, it’s still possible for them to survive. But they must start with a win today. Norwich are just above the relegation zone and know how important it is that they keep winning, rather than relying on their rivals to drop points. They have had an up-and-down season so far, and now is the time to produce a consistent run of results. Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A Newcastle v West Brom Newcastle loosened the purse strings again to bring in reinforcements

to help with their relegation fight. For me, though, the manager is holding the team back. He has a good, strong squad but he can’t get them to produce results. This is a must-win game because, if other results go against them, they could really find themselves with an uphill struggle. West Brom have climbed towards midtable and, barring a disaster, should be safe this season. It has not been as good as expected, though, and problems still remain at the club as another transfer window comes and goes with Saido Berahino still there. Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-1 Stoke v Everton Stoke have had a horror week. Knocked out of the League and FA Cups, and then a toothless defeat in midweek. Mark Hughes knows he must gee the players up or they could end up coasting towards the end of the season. Everton had a rare home win on Wednesday, but that came at a price as Lukaku picked up a knock. That said, scoring goals is not their problem. They have three England players in defence, yet leak goals.

They could be perfect for a wounded Stoke. Prediction: Home win Last season: 2-0 Swansea v Crystal Palace With the new manager coming in, the Swans showed better form, but they are still hovering close to the relegation places. After two good seasons, they were expected to kick on, but this time around they have gone backwards. They need to tighten up at the back and make themselves difficult to beat. Palace, who are stagnating, find themselves in the bottom half of the table after riding high earlier in the season. But their record against the teams around them is good, and they will be confident of beating Swans. The goals need to start flowing again, though. Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-1 Tottenham v Watford After the midweek games, Spurs climbed above main rivals Arsenal in the table and they now have all the incentive they need to stay there. As a team, they seem to get better with each game and they have found the fine blend of youth and ex-

perience. They defend well and attack with pace. And with Harry Kane up front, there is always a threat of a goal. Watford have their own potent strike force, who have done a great job in carrying the team up the league and, more or less, securing safety, which is all you can ask for in your first season back in the Premiership. Holding on to Ighalo come the summer, though, will be some task. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A Bournemouth v Arsenal Although Bournemouth haven’t been consistent, they have grabbed points when they have needed them, and it looks likely that they will stay up - and I don’t think you will hear many complaints from other teams’ fans. They have shown their intent by spending money and, in Eddie Howe, they have a superb young manager. Arsenal have slipped back to fourth after being touted as potential champions, and they need to get back on track. This could be a tricky away game for them, but if they strike early, they could kick on and score three or four. But if they concede, it could be another disappointing game. Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A Chelsea v Man Utd Chelsea have slowly but surely been improving, and this represents a big test for them as they try to climb into the top half of the table. They

have bought in a new, on-loan striker but, for me, Pato represents a big risk as he has come nowhere near fulfilling the potential he once showed. He could be the new Falcao! Man Utd, who have rediscovered how to score more than one goal in a match, have their sights firmly set on fourthplaced Arsenal. They are trying to get the fans behind them again, and a good win against their old rivals would see them building even more bridges. Prediction: Draw Last season: 1-0 Southampton v West Ham The Saints are a different side now that Fraser Forster is back in goal. He has kept four straight clean sheets and is a shoo-in to make the England Euro 2016 squad. They put in a gutsy display against Arsenal at the Emirates and came away with a very welcome draw. They are difficult to beat at home, but will have to be at their best to keep out a strong midfield and forward line. West Ham could, depending on other results, move up into fifth spot with a win, and that should give them all the incentive they need. They started the season well, but fell away over the Christmas period. Now, though, they are now back on track and picking up points again. European qualification is within their reach. Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-0

Elodie does the business AFTER the FA Cup excitement, we returned to midweek Premier League action and, it seem,s one or two players returned to form as it was a very high point-scoring week, with some good performances from our Oasis Fm Fantasy League managers. A couple of teams produced stand-out results, and this is shown in the high point-scoring team of the week. Man Utd, West Ham, Everton and Spurs all provided two players,

which left places for just one player apiece from Southampton, Man City and Leicester. Best-performing player of the week was Everton’s Ross Barkley, with a good 16-point return. In the Oasis Fm league, Frank Devaney’s Baines on Toast remained on top, but he can stay there? A decent points week has seen a host of new challengers emerge from the pack. Lee Walsh and his

Frankenstein Utd team have moved up into third spot after pulling in 89 points, David Retberg’s Untouchables are now fifth after scoring 88 points, and Matthew Potts’ Goldenpack team moved into sixth spot with a decent 80-point return. So with fresh names at the top, the league is becoming more interesting. The team of the week is an example of using the new features to get a higher score. Deedee’s Hotspurs,

managed by Elodie Townsend, scored a great total of 112 points. Star performers were Delli Alli, Ross Barkley and Harry Kane, who contributed 49 points between them. However, the bench boost, in which all substitutes contribute as well, was also played. This added another 26 points to the total. So if you want to move up extra places in the table, it may be time to consider a boost.

Don’t forget, we have another full weekend

of fixtures, so manage your team carefully.
