Sanchez has a go From Front Page As many pundits predicted, the infighting and squabbling among the political parties has led to a never-beforeseen scenario, in which everyone wants power but nobody is prepared to compromise to get it.

The stand-off is making Spain a laughing stock, and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. The country’s economic boom is the envy of Europe, unemployment is falling and the dark days of the Crisis are firmly in the past.

But with no official Government, nothing is being done. Laws cannot be passed, debates cannot be held and no international deals can be done.

The King has even had to cancel his first official state visit to Britain, such is the embarrassment.

And most Spaniards have had enough. The public believe the politicians have had enough time to sort out this mess. In reality, we are as far away today as we were when the kiddies were unwrapping the presents.

Key to the deadlock is acting-Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

What is often forgotten is that he actually won the election. He led his Popular Party to gain the most votes and the most seats.

Of course, he fell way short of a majority, but he did have the will of the public. However, nobody wants to work with him.

He proposed a pact with the PSOE party, which came second.

That coalition would be

like the Conservatives and Labour doing a deal in the UK. A non-runner to everyone, apart from Rajoy.

He believed then, and still does today, that this option would be in the best interests of Spain.

Rajoy was letting the country know that he would be open to compromise on some policy. However the PSOE leader Pedro Sanchez was not interested.

But, it was whispered, Sanchez might be up for a deal if the PP had a different leader, someone like Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, for instance.

Rajoy dismissed this out of hand. He feels that he led his party to victory and the public

voted for him. As time ticked on, King Felipe, following the constitutional law, asked Rajoy to form a new government. After a couple of weeks of negotiations, Rajoy admitted he couldn’t. So last week the King asked Sanchez.

This would have been unthinkable on 21st December - the day after the General Election. Sanchez had just presided over a horror election for the PSOE, and its worst-ever election return. Yet here he is, being asked to become the country’s leader.

Sanchez has been busy. Talks with Pablo Iglesias the leader of Podemos are said to have gone well and Iglesias would snap up

any form of power in a heartbeat.

The problem is that their combined 159 seats still leaves them short of the majority needed to make a government.

The other party, Ciudadanos, have been rather quiet. Their leader, Albert Rivera. would never do a deal with Podemos. And this is just one of many problems Sanchez has.

Apart from the numbers not adding up, there would be few in his party who would back Iglesias as Deputy PM. And Rivera would want that job if he did throw his party into the pot.

Then there is the Catalan problem. Iglesias is sympathetic to those who want independ-

ence. As a national party, PSOE members know it would be career suicide to have any connection with a policy that would split the union.

And what about the old guard? If you think Labour has some dinosaurs in its party, have a look at the PSOE. Former PM Felipe Gonzalez has been scathing and vicious in his attacks on Podemos. Gonzalez is still a powerful voice and would fight to his last breathe to stop any alliance.

As one wag said: “If Sanchez can pull off a government, he will surely win the Nobel Peace Prize.”

The fact that Sanchez, who is not popular at all among high-profile politicians, is even talking

with Podemos is being seen as an act of PSOE treason.

The knives were out for him on 21st December. And nothing has changed. Susana Diaz is waiting in the wings.

And that is leading some in the party to hope for the outcome which is most likely: Another General Election!

If Sanchez cannot form a government in the next few weeks, then the King will order a new vote. And this is where the fun really begins. A new election would surely see Sanchez being replaced as head of PSOE. This should reinvigorate the party and could lead to a better showing at the polls. However, a new vote in many ways, works for PP. Mariano Rajoy would be extremely hopeful of getting more seats in a second poll. His campaign sells itself.

“There is no workable alternative. A vote for us is a vote for stability and a working Government.”

Rajoy, by being stubborn and not standing aside, is set for a reprieve. That said, there is one other train of thought. He could almost guarantee a majority for his Popular Party if he stepped aside, stayed in the cabinet, but let Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría lead.

It’s all speculation, like everything has been since the election. But what is clear is that this situation needs an end game.

A new election would probably be in June ... and if there were no winner then?

Extra beds for South Hospital

Food Bank’s such a relief THE Tenerife Food Bank in Santa Cruz, which remains extremely busy, is now helping nearly 12,000 people, of which 3,000 are children up to 15 years of age.

But the Municipal Social Welfare Institute (IMAS ) says the problem is getting slightly better: in April 2015, the non-profit association helped feed 13,140 hungry mouths.

The slight decline is down to two factors: the

economy’s upturn, and new guidelines about who can and cannot receive food parcels.

Hernán Cerón Espino, President of the Food Bank of Tenerife, said: “The new system does make it easier for everyone because a social worker now visits the family, or those who need help. This gives us the information we need to make sure that those who most need help get it.”

Cerón recognises the work done by social services, saying: “I have a lot of respect and esteem for these people.”

Reported sex crimes were down last year THE number of sex crimes reported in Spain continues to decline, with 1,127 women raped there during 2015, according to official data provided by acting Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz.

“I will not hide that violations are closely linked to gender-based violence,” he said. “The violation requires a specific protocol and we are working in this area.”

There has been a 19% decline in the last four years and, said Diaz: “Every rape is unspeakable, a tragedy, but we are pleased that we are experiencing a decline.

Overall, crime dropped by 4.5% between late 2011 and late 2015.”

The Minister added:

“I emphasise that in these four years, Spain has been a safer country. This is the first fouryear period recently in which we have been free from terrorist attacks.”

As for the fight against terror, Diaz said that of the 177 suspects arrested, most were jihadists based here -139 in Spain and 14 from other countries. There were 76 operations and 161 suspected ETA members also arrested.

Diaz stressed: “The arrests of ETA members shows the dismantling of the structure of ETA. They are in a terminal state.”

Nationally, there have been 26% fewer robberies, while violence and intimidation fell by 25%.

Canaries’ legal high THE Canary Islands Government has increased its legal aid budget this year to 16.8 million euros to guarantee the lawful rights of people on lower incomes.

Aaron Afonso, Justice and Equality Minister, reports that the Canaries ranked fifth in autonomous regions on this subject in 2015.

He also noted that the Constitution states that justice shall be free when so provided by law, and to those most in need, and provide them with the proper representation.

MORE beds are now available at El Mojon hospital, in the South of Tenerife, after the Cabildo finally finished the required work.

This week, it officially handed over the wing to the Canary Islands’ Ministry of Health, and there will now be 96 hospital beds in the South Hospital, which includes areas of nursing support, adaptation of the TAC room and a cafeteria.

The Cabildo confirmed that the beds would be filled in early March, once the Ministry of Health finalised staffing arrangements.

Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, who visited the hospital complex this week, said: “The Cabildo has made every effort to implement hospital services in this region, along with the Ministry of Health. We will have maternity wards and

operating theatres.”

Alonso stressed that the Cabildo funded almost 60% of the 27-million-euro total bill for the works.

In addition to transferring the building to the Ministry of Health,

Alonso confirmed that work on the external development centre will end this year. El Mojon already has an emergency department, radiology unit and outpatient mental health section.

This year will also see the construction of four operating rooms and delivery rooms, a day hospital with 12 beds and a 16bed surgical ward, plus a blood bank sterilisation zone and emergency laboratory.

Just be patient THE waiting list continues to grow in Canarian hospitals as the number of those needing operations increases.

The total of people awaiting small operations has risen 1.95%, from 30,584 to 31,193 people. But it’s worse for those on the “long” list, which features an operation scheduled for more than six months away.

This total has risen from 9,166 to 11,160, which is an unacceptable 17.86%.

The Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC), better known as Candelaria hospi-

tal, has the worst data on waiting lists. It has 9,583 people waiting, while last June the figure was 8,940.

Levy Cabrera, General Secretary of the Union of Physicians of Tenerife, said of the problem in HUC: “It is down to the fact that we have inherited some issues from administrative management.

“And there are several factors that have influenced the rise.

Among them is the lack of specialists, which extends throughout the country.”.

Surgical wait, however, is not the only rising factor. The list of hospital out-patients in-

creased 8.66%, from 20,646 in June 2015 to 22,604 in December 2015.

Although Allergy, the speciality with a larger waiting list, decreased from 5,089 to 4,775 people, the patient figures in Paediatrics were up, from 1,373 to 1,725 patients) and Dermatology, up from 2,586 to 3,460).

Among the specialities to lower their waiting lists is Internal Medicine (from 653 to 581) and Rehabilitation (from 3,403 to 3,096).

In specialities such as Cardiology, the waiting list increased by more than 200 patients, from 1,236 to 1,453.

Bike-Park to reopen THE Las Torres Bike-Park, in Los Cristianos, was funded at a cost of 183,000 euros as an outdoor sports park for bikes and skates.

It opened just after the 2011 election campaign, but didn’t last long because its design and structure was deemed “too dangerous” for users.

Adeje Council has criticised the Park’s bad management by the local government.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel for hundreds of youngsters because it has received a new, 112,500-euro investment.

The Britos and Gutierrez SL Cranes and Transport companies will be completing an upgrade, in the hope

of getting the park reopened before summer.

Councillor Oliver Tacoronte said: “Work resumes very soon, so we can open the doors of this sports facility with total safety. And we hope it will be as soon as possible for many young people to enjoy.”

Troya facelift is Canaries’ leading the way crime drops THE emblematic Hotel Troya, after 40 years on the front line, has been renovated as part of Costa Adeje’s Modernisation, Improvement and Competitive Growth Plan (PMM).

This scheme promotes a series of renovation proposals, which will benefit the tourist destination.

And the hotel, owned

by Alexandre Hotels, with Zoom Arquitectos, was recently honoured as part of the “Re Think Hotel” competition, organised by the Future Habitat group at FITUR, the Madrid International Tourism Trade Fair.

The Troya won an honorary mention for “the best completed sustainable and renovation hotel project in Spain”.

According to Alexandre Hotels’ DirectorGeneral Josep María Caballé, the building work, which is practically complete, has seen a new façade along the Avenida Rafael Puig Lluvina, as well as other structural changes to the hotel interior.

Adeje Works Councillor José María Álvarez Acosta said: “FITUR was a very positive event for Adeje. We held a series of meetings during a very intensive working week, which is

now opening doors to new investors, as well as reaffirming the commitment of those already investing in the zone.

“This award for the Troya Hotel, along with those won by other hotels during the week, is proof of the commitment of not just the Council but of businesses as well.

“We are on the same page, so to speak, where urban development goes hand in hand with tourist and environmental advancement.”

He added: “The reformations and renovations carried out by the Troya Hotel are a fine example, and one that can be followed by other hotels, both in Adeje and beyond.”

Among the Troya changes are a new entrance, façade and garden areas. The reception has been upgraded and all 354 rooms have been renovated (standard, family, Club Alexandre and Junior Suites).

There is also a new restaurant-bar service, with show cooking and theme evenings, new furniture, the creation of a “Natural” spa, with pools, a sun-deck, mas-

sage zones, a shower circuit and sauna, etc.

The hotel also boasts a new gym with the most modern equipment, and the Magic Park children’s adapted area.

And for business guests, there is a conference room and improved connectivity and WiFi. The improvements, both here and in other tourist buildings and commercial zones, are part of the PMM, working to regenerate existing tourist zones.

The Costa Adeje PMM is approved by the regional government via Gesplan (Territorial and Environmental Planning and Development), which contains a series of renovation measures to upgrade public spaces in tourism centres.

This is usually applied to streets and free public spaces, emphasising the importance of natural spaces in urban environments.

The plan also includes an improvement in public transport to allow greater mobility and better parking, as well as more pedestrian areas.

Arona’s scheme to aid homeless ELENA Cabello, Arona Council’s Social Services Minister, has confirmed that more than 100 residents in the borough are homeless, including many foreigners.

In addition, one-third of those homeless have mental health problems, addiction or a disability.

Ms Cabello was speaking after a meeting of the Platform on the Elimination of Homelessness in Tenerife, where a “Plan of Care” for these people is being forged.

The Plan involves Social Services and other areas of Arona, along with civilians, Red Cross and representatives of various political parties.

Ms Cabello said: “We will meet in February and March for meetings, and we will seek economic co-operation

that will allow us to implement the Plan. We cannot allow tragedies like the death of two homeless people to be repeated.

“We are working on our budgets and expect to approve this in the next few weeks. We are working closely with the Red Cross, so we can offer help quickly.”

She adds that they are considering increasing the size of El Fraile’s soup kitchen, which now caters for some 30 homeless people daily.

CRIME is down in the Canary Islands, but it’s not all good news because the figures for murder and attempted murder increased by 66.7%.

The official Ministry of Interior 2015 figures shows that recorded crime was down 0.6% compared with 2014.

The stats could be alarming, but they actually reveal that the murder rate is very low in real terms. Manslaughter and murder increased from 12 to 20, which is still an extremely small percentage of the total population.

The number of criminal offences recorded last year totalled 89,550, down from 90,133 in 2014. , By provinces, crimes and offences were down 2.8% in Las Palmas, while there was a 1.9% increase in Santa Cruz

de Tenerife. Throughout the archipelago, robberies decreased by 5.7%, accounted for 1,536, compared with the 1,628 in 2014. The downward trend was notable in Las Palmas, which dropped 14.9%, although in the Tenerife province, figures for this type of crime went up 6.3% - increasing from 710 to 755.

Household robberies decreased by 6% in the Canaries in 2015, with an 11.7% decline in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and a 2.8% increase in Las Palmas.

Thefts of motor vehicles fell 7.8% in the whole archipelago, a trend most notable in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where a drop of 11.7% was recorded, and less noticeable in Las Palmas, where these crime numbers dropped by 1.9%. Drug-trafficking offences rose 2% in the Canaries last year, with Las Palmas showing a 4.9% increase, while Tenerife’s Santa Cruz figures dropped 2.2%.

Thefts were down 1.3% for the whole of the Islands in 2015, a fall of 3.4% in the province of Las Palmas and 0.9% in the West.

Data corresponding to the two capitals of the Archipelago highlights that robberies with violence and intimidation fell in Las Palmas 28.7%, but increased by almost the same proportion (28%) in Santa Cruz.

However, household robberies in the Tenerife capital fell12.7%, while in Gran Canaria, these crimes increased by 22.1%.

The theft of motor vehicles declined in both cities - more in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which registered -19.6%, against the -9.8% in Las Palmas.

And while Santa Cruz thefts increased by 17.2%, Gran Canaria’s total was up by 1.7%.

Criminal offences in Tenerife’s capital rose by 10.3%, but crimes dropped 2.1 in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas.

Falsely-accused ‘rapist’ released after 12 years A DUTCHMAN, imprisoned in Spain more than 12 years ago for a rape he did not commit, has finally been freed by the Spanish Supreme Court.

Romano van der Dussen’s conviction was overturned by judges, following a confession

by British killer Mark Dixie.

The Court, which quashed Romano’s conviction for the August 2003 attack, ordered his immediate release from the 15-year sentence.

The decision came eight months after 44-year-old Dixie, serving life for the savage murder of teenager Sally Anne Bowman in 2005, confessed to raping a Spanish woman in a drink and drug-fuelled rage in Fuengirola in 2003.

Dixie went on to rape and murder model Sally Anne, near her South London home in Croydon. The horrific attack - she was stabbed seven times and raped while she lay dead or dying - occurred soon after Dixie, from nearby Streatham, returned to the UK. He admitted the rape to Dussen’s lawyer in Durham prison last June, and a DNA test in Holland later confirmed Dixie’s link to the crime.

Dussen, now 42, was arrested in Fuengirola shortly after that attack and two others, which he always denied. He was later convicted and sentenced to 15 years.

Dixie’s DNA was found at the scene of one of the attacks, but never traced by Spanish police. Yet DNA from Dussen was never found at any of the crime scenes.

Sally Anne’s mum, Linda, said last year: “An innocent man has spent 11 years in prison for a crime he did not do. I feel very strongly that if the Spanish authorities had done their job properly, my Sally Anne would be alive.”

Following his confession to lawyer Rachel Imamkhan, Dixie wrote a three-page statement, lodged with the Spanish Supreme Court. But Romano had to remain in prison until the court accepted his appeal against conviction.

He had been convicted of all three sexual attacks in the Spanish resort, but was identified by just one of the victims.

Last year, Dixie admitted raping one of the women, but claimed he

could not remember if he carried out the other two attacks because he was high on drugs at the time.

But in June, he admitted to another of the rapes and gave a saliva sample at County Durham’s Frankland prison, which matched DNA found on the first victim. Spanish police confirmed the match in a report two months later.

Prosecutors at Romano’s trial said the same man must have committed all three rapes, which took place within two hours of each other in the early hours of 10th August, 2003.

Romano was jailed for 15½ years - after being picked out of photographs in police files even though DNA found on the first victim did not match his.

Spain’s Supreme Court turned down an appeal the following year, and even refused to admit his appeal last

Positive property prices

EVEN though the price of resale homes has fallen dramatically in many parts of Spain since the financial crisis began, the property portal fotocasa. es recently released a report based on its own findings.

It revealed that the drop in 2015 was a mere 0.8%, which, was the lowest and most heartening for many years.

Prices in many areas have risen and it appears that the market

may finally have seen stability, especially as mortgages are still attainable at reasonable rates.

The five most buoyant areas in 2015 were the Balearic Islands (+3.3%), La Rioja (+2.4%), Madrid (+1.4%), Andalucia and Galicia (both +0.7%).

Even the Bank of Spain seems to be upbeat in its review of the market because its latest figures that

mortgage costs have fallen.

The Ministry of Development has reported that requests for certificates for building new properties have increased by an staggering 35%.

As long as the world economy holds firm against China’s economic problems and doesn’t flop back into a decline, Spain’s property-price trend will continue to move in a positive direction.

Yet long-standing evidence connected Dixie to at least one of the attacks and pointed to Romano being the victim of a miscarriage of justice.

Dixie was arrested the following year by chance after a pub fight and was linked to the gruesome killing through his DNA. He was jailed for life and told he must serve a minimum of 34 years - in February 2008 after a trial at the Old Bailey.

Tram caters for millions

TENERIFE’S tram system closed 2015 with a growth of over 4%, compared with the previous year, which means an impressive 13,273,083 passengers used the network.

According to the Metrotenerife annual report, the daily average last year was about 44,800 on weekdays and 18,440 around the holidays.

It also stated that the day of peak demand was 10th December, with 55,582 customers.

With more than 13 million passengers last year 2015, the tram has now carried 112,535,974 customers in 8½ years of service.

The report also revealed that more and more people are using pre-paid tickets. The Road-Mobile system, which registered more than 3.5 million trips last year, was used by more than 29,000 firsttime users.

Cabildos on stony financial grounds THE respective Canary Islands’ Cabildos, still in a financial mess, rank among those most in debt in Spain.

Latest figures show that every person living in El Hierro would have to pay 889 euros to pay off the Cabildo’s debt there.

It’s not much better in La Gomera, where the figure is 616 euros.

The main islands are doing better. Gran Canaria would have a figure of 138 euros while here in Tenerife it is 298 euros.

This data comes from a report by the Economic Transparency Portal Sielocal (Local Information System), which handles the of-

ficial figures to the end of 2014. Nationally, El Hierro ranks as the third local Cabildo with the most debt per capita, La Gomera is fifth, La Palma sixth, Lanzarote seventh and Tenerife eighth.

In total, at the end of 2014, Tenerife owes 265.7 million euros, for a population of 889,936 inhabitants. Gran Canaria owes 118.2m from 851,157 residents.

In Lanzarote, with 141,940 residents, the insular corporation owes 44.4m; La Palma, with 83,456 inhabitants, owes 29.5m; Fuerteventura (106,930 residents) has debts of 17.3m; La Gomera owes 12.7m (for a census of 20,721 people); and finally, El Hierro, with 10,675 locals and a 9.4m-euro debt.

China in our hands THE Canary Islands continues to have great business ties with China, with imports of its products increasing by more than 36% in the last two years.

A report by SedeenChina, an international consultancy dedicated to supporting its companies, shows that the volume of goods bought from the Far East country is growing four times faster than the total national imports, which has increased 9% in the same period.

The study says the archipelago enjoyed 160,325,058 euros of business, of which 63,293,320.47 came from the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 97,031,737.42 from Las Palmas.

Most imports (20%) in Tenerife were garments and clothing accesso-

ries, followed by footwear (10%) and electronic materials (9%).

The study also shows that the increased purchase of goods from China should be up another 10% for 2015. And nationally, Spain does about 20 billion euros of business with the country.

By region, Cataluña and Madrid are by far the regions which buy most from China, with a budget of 6.093m and 5.332m euros respectively.

They are followed significantly by Valencia, with a spending balance of 2,293m. Rounding out the top five are Aragon and the Basque Country, with a basket of about 1,000m euros each for shopping with the eastern giant.

On the opposite side, close are Extremadura, Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla, which spend 50 million euros importing Chinese goods.

Yank planks IT has not been a very good week for America. It started badly on Sunday when their showpiece sporting event flopped. I’m a big NFL fan and have been since I was an ankle-biter.

I’ve enjoyed this season immensely, partly because of the improved showing from my team, the Washington Redskins.

They will be a real force next season.

This year was the 50th Superbowl and the NFL has been planning this event for years. It was even allocated to San Francisco to guarantee the weather.

Lady Gaga sang the national anthem, and some of the biggest names in music were booked for the half-time show. On the field, it should have been a classic. A genuine legend in what would surely be his last match, against the next big thing. But it never happened.

Coldplay and Bruno Mars were fine, but Beyonce’s racial message captured the headlines.

Throw in one of the dullest matches ever and the whole thing was

a damp squib. Expectations of 160 million watching in America were crushed as just 112 million tuned in.

And even the NFL’s claim that it was the most-watched sporting match in history went south. It wasn’t even the most-watched match on Sunday as hundreds of millions preferred Chelsea versus Man United.

Then, on Tuesday, the American electoral system was shown up as New Hampshire went to the polls. Even seasoned analysts and political experts are flummoxed on what to make of it all.

Marco Rubio seems to have gone from Republican hero to zero in a week. while Colonel Sanders is kicking Hillary’s ass in the Democratic race.

Donald Trump triumphed, but not with the expected numbers, and even though New Hampshire said No, a third President Bush is still possible as Jeb eyes some big numbers in the south in a few weeks.

It’s a mess. They may as well just pull the names out of a hat. And all this before the trouble we will certainly have at the Oscars.

A 35-YEAR-OLD man is in police custody following a Los Cristianos robbery on Tuesday. The unnamed person was nabbed after stealing 28 rings from a jewellery shop in the town centre.

This didn’t stop them, and they bravely overpowered the man.

Seconds later a Local Police officer, who had been on his bike in Avenida Suecia, arrived at the scene.

Within minutes, there were a number of policemen assisting in the arrest. The defendant, identified only as M.J.

from Adeje, somehow suffered injuries to his eye and legs.

During the chase, the thief threw away the rings. Twenty were recovered by workers from the jewellers, and five others were later collected by local police. But the remaining three have not yet been found.

He snatched the rings - believed to be worth nearly 50,000 euros and fled on foot, only to be caught after an employee of the shop gave chase.

The incident occurred at around 5pm at Pasha Jewellers on one of the main shopping streets.

It is understood that a sales assistant showed a prospective client a tray of rings in a display by the entrance to the premises.

The current law dates back to 1968 but, paradoxically, has been more effective in defending the rights of buyers than a new one, passed in 2015.

Since the latter is not retroactive, the previous law still offers a way to recover the money because the form says the judgements so far in Madrid have gone their way: “100%,” said Serra.

“We have spoken with families who decided to buy off-plan through co-operatives, joint-

ownership or housing developers. In the archipelago, cases are many and varied.

“And the most common case we find in the Canaries is the developer who was taking money and putting it in a bank account.”

She added: “These buyers did not arrange the proper finance channels and did not arrange the correct insurance.

“The absence of insurance is precisely the key to resolving the legal proceedings in favour of the buyers.”

‘Fraudster’ shook hands with new King of Spain!

The “fraudster” even wangled his way into King Felipe VI’s coronation, and was, famously, photographed shaking hands with the monarch.

Her Majesty put on hold for Spain’s royal couple SPAIN’S King Felipe VI and his wife, Queen Letizia, have postponed their state visit to the UK, amid the current political situation.

The royal couple had planned to visit The Queen in March for their first trip to Britain since becoming King and Queen in 2014.

But their state visit was put back when December’s General Election resulted in a hung parliament for the first time, and King Felipe was unable to form a ruling coalition government.

The King has nominated PSOE leader Pedro Sanchez to form a government but, because the procedure could take as long as four weeks, the royals decided against travelling to the UK. An official statement, issued by the Spanish Foreign Office, said: “Notice is given that, due to the process of the formation of a new government currently underway in Spain, [the state] visit has been postponed.”

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace acknowledged the announcement, saying Her Royal Highness understood why the Span-

ish royals had chosen to stay at home.

“The Queen has been informed of the Spanish Government’s decision to cancel the forthcoming State Visit,” said the statement.

“The Queen, of course, fully understands the decision and the context in which it was taken.”

The royal Spanish couple were scheduled to visit The Queen from 8-10th March, and were set to stay at Windsor Castle. It is some 90 minutes from London by road and is often used by Her Majesty as a weekend home.

Details of the itinerary had not been released, but royal watchers were hoping to see Felipe, 47, and Letizia, 43, reunited with the nation’s sweethearts, Prince William and Kate.

The Spanish King and Queen, when still styled as the Prince and Princess of Asturias, attended the 2011 wedding of William and Kate.

The last UK state visit from Spain was by King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia 30 years ago. The king abdicated from the throne in June 2014, but still retains his title.

Spanish daily EL PAIS, who has checked out the young socialite (known as “Little Nicolás”), says he is being investigated for a trip he made to Ribadeo (Lugo) in August 2014.

He is believed to have posed as a Royal Palace envoy, securing several suspect payments, including a 100,000-euro deposit from an unknown origin.

But the newspaper has learned that the probe is progressing slowly because of a “lack of cooperation” by National Police officials, according to court papers.

Gómez Iglesias and two municipal police officers will have to tell the judge about his Ribadeo trip, which resulted in a meeting between the youngster and businessman Jorge Cosmen, of the ALSA transportation group.

Court documents show that Little Nicolás phoned a local restaurant, pretending to be a spokesman for the

Spanish royal family. He booked several tables after assuring the owner that the King was making a personal appearance He then called former Madrid Mayor Ana Botella, of the Popular Party, and told her the same story, asking for roads to be blocked off to traffic and space made for the monarch’s security detail.

Ultimately, the said fraudster showed up with just a retinue of three luxury cars and a few municipal police officers, who are being investigated for, allegedly, accepting bribes to back him up.

Little Nicolás could face up to four years in prison if found guilty of bribing law-enforcement officers.

He was arrested in October 2014 following a complaint from the Deputy Prime Minister’s office, which had learned that he was posing as one of its workers.

A search of his home produced numerous forged documents with stamps from the royal household, government departments and Spain’s secret service - the National Intelligence Centre. The suspect allegedly used this material to pose as an influential figure, with

high-placed contacts in the ruling Popular Party.

In one instance, he is believed to have concocted a scheme to fleece a businessman out of 25,000 euros by promising to help him sell a valuable property in exchange for a fee.

Investigators also studied Gómez Iglesias’ bank accounts and uncovered several suspect payments, including the mystery 100,000-euro deposit.

Little Nicolás comes from a middle-class family in Madrid’s northern Chamartín district, where he joined the PP’s youth wing when he was 15.

He was soon seen with senior figures in exclusive spots, including the VIP box at Real Madrid’s Bernabéu stadium.

“He was always bragging about his contacts,” said a PP source.

“He saw himself as a high-flyer, but a few months ago we began to hear rumours that he was getting into trouble.”

Drug-test folly!

MORE than one-fifth of Spanish motorists are convinced they can beat drug-testing traffic cops at official control stops.

In reality, though, it’s just a big myth and they’ve got no chance of getting away with it.

Forget drinking water, coffee or energy drinks, sweating through exercise, using mouthwash or eating lemons … they just won’t work!

Yet many Spaniards believe it will prevent them from giving a positive reading when they are subject to the saliva test, used by Guardia Civil Traffic Police (DGT) to detect the use of narcotics.

“Products on the market for this purpose are ineffective, as various scientific studies have shown,” said DGT official Juan Carlos González.

The conclusions are contained in a study

Mitos and falsas creencias de los conductories sobre los controles de drogas (or, Myths and other erroneous beliefs of drivers over drug-control stops).

It was prepared by the Spanish Foundation for Traffic Safety (Fesvial) and published by the DGT state road-safety agency.

Carlos González, assistant deputy director for investigation and intervention at the DGT, added: “Products are available on the market for this purpose [to try to avoid a positive reading].

“However, they are ineffective, as various scientific studies have shown.”

The survey was carried out on 1,205 people between the ages of 18 and 60. It also revealed that younger people were more likely to think they could cheat a drug test, with 27% of under-25s con-

vinced it could be done.

In 2013, Fesvial published a similar study about motorists who believed they could get around an alcohol breath-test. In that survey, 30% said that they thought that some of the same practices were effective.

But the DGT stressed: “Nothing works! When we perform these tests, there is a long and continuous exhaling of the breath. Air is expelled from the alveoli (air cells in the lungs), which are subjected to exchanges of gases and air. This makes it impossible to adulterate the results.”

In a Fesvial study on drug use published last month, 30% of Spanish motorists said they believed that using narcotics, such as cocaine and heroin, wouldn’t lead to a positive reading.

Some 30.8% also said they thought drugs tests wouldn’t de-

tect small amounts of hashish or marijuana.

And in a study last month, 30% of Spanish motorists said they believed that using narcotics would not give positive readings.

But Carlos González warned several months ago: “A positive drug result from saliva always means that there is a sufficient quantity to determine that the drug has been consumed,” Civil Guard officers can detect whether people have smoked hashish or marijuana up to six hours before they are tested.

The DGT authorities have embarked on a new campaign over the past few months to go after motorists under the influence of drugs.

Be warned, because the Guardia Civil will conduct up to 120,000 tests at traffic control points this year.

And there’s no escaping that test!

Jet streams could put the brakes on aircraft CHANGES in the climate could lead to flights from Britain to America being extended, say University of Reading scientists.

Their study points out that global warming is likely to speed up the jet stream, and slow down aeroplanes heading for the US. And while eastbound flights from the States will be quicker, roundtrip journeys will “significantly lengthen”.

High-altitude jet streams in the northern and southern hemisphere are the powerful winds which help move weather systems around the globe.

Air traffic normally tries to take advantage of these speedy flows of the Atlantic jet stream, from west to east, to reduce journey times on

routes between Europe and North America.

It is one of the world’s busiest routes, with around 600 flights every day.

The university’s scientists believe the changes will increase carbon emissions and fuel consumption and, potentially, raise ticket prices.

Their study has been published in the journal Environmental Research Letters. Previous studies have shown that climate change is likely to increase turbulence on these transatlantic flights.

In this new study, researchers modelled how atmospheric winds would change, given a doubling of atmospheric CO2.

They found that the winds on the New York to London route will become 15% faster on average.

Flights from London will become twice as likely to take over seven hours, while flights from

New York will speed up, becoming twice as likely to take under five hours and 20 minutes.

While on average, flights will gain and lose just a few minutes each way, the cumulative impact is “significant” says the study.

Lead author Dr Paul

Williams, from the university, told BBC News: “If you look at the round trips, the eastbound flights are getting shorter by less than the westbound flights are getting longer.

“So there is a robust increase in the roundtrip journey time, which

means planes spending longer in the air. When you add that up for all transatlantic aircraft, you get an extra 2,000 hours of planes in the air every year, with $22 million extra in fuel costs and 70 million kg of CO2.”

The researchers say the additional CO2 is the equivalent of the annual emissions of 7,000 British homes. In 2012, 2% of all human carbon emissions were the results of plane emissions.

If air travel continues to grow at the predicted rate, it could contribute a considerably higher proportion by 2050.

While there is no firm observational evidence of changes in the jet stream as yet, scientists say the record time for a non-Concorde flight from New York to London is currently 5hrs 16mins, set in January last year.

“We know what drives the jet stream,” said Dr

Williams. “It’s the temperature difference between the warm tropical regions and the cold polar regions at flight levels.

“We understand what that temperature difference is going to do in response to global warming. It’s increasing, and we are very confident that the jet stream is increasing as a consequence.”

The researchers believe that as well as worsening the environmental impacts of aviation, airlines are likely to increase ticket prices to cover their costs.

And while the study applied to the LondonNew York route only, the impacts on flights of changes in the jet streams are likely to be felt all over the world.

That’s because these critical winds are found in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

Death-row Spaniard granted new lifeline FLORIDA’S Supreme Court has ordered a new trial for a Spaniard, who had been on death row for over 15 years after being convicted of the 1994 murders of three people.

Lawyers for 44-yearold Pablo Ibar, the son of Basque immigrants, who holds dual Spanish-US citizenship, had fought for a new trial during a hearing before the state Supreme Court in April 2014, arguing that mistakes were made by his defence lawyer during his first trial in 2000.

The key piece of evidence in the prosecution’s case was a grainy, soundless, home-security video that showed a group of men attacking nightclub owner Casimir “Butch Casey” Sucharski, and two models, Sharon Anderson and Marie Rogers,

whom he had brought to his home in Miramar, Florida.

One suspect in the video appears to be Ibar but, according to his lawyers, no DNA evidence was found at the scene to connect their client with the crime.

Ibar, the only Spaniard facing the death penalty in the US, has never confessed to the crime throughout the near-22 years he has spent in Florida’s state penitentiary system.

The justices wrote: “Ibar has established

prejudice, given the relatively weak case against him with no physical evidence linking him to the crime, the critical role of his identification derived from the video, and the errors we previously identified in Ibar’s direct appeal.

“Simply put, we cannot and do not have confidence in the outcome of this trial. Accordingly, we reverse the trial court’s denial of post-conviction relief and remand for a new trial.”

Ibar’s family had been

waging public campaigns against his death sentence both in Spain and in the US. It is not clear when Ibar’s new trial date will be set. State prosecutors have a month to ask the Supreme Court for a review of the sentence, according to news reports.

Cándido Ibar, his father, told Spanish state broadcaster RNE he was convinced that prosecutors would appeal the decision. But he insisted his son’s defence team would present new evidence in the forthcoming his trial.

“The past is the past, and we have to look toward the future,” he said.

The Supreme Court has overturned the conviction of another man, Seth Penalver, who was sentenced with Ibar. He testified that he was not sure if the Spaniard was at the crime scene.

Penalver, also sentenced to death, was acquitted during his retrial in 2012.

Catalans up in arms AS many as 50,000 people in Catalonia have taken part in a rally to protest against an irrigation plan envisaged by the Spanish Government.

They demonstrated their disapproval in Amposta city on Saturday of its scheme to transfer greater amounts of water from the Ebro River to other cities.

Amposta is the capital of the Montsia district, in the province of Tarragona,some 100km south of Barcelona on the Mediterranean Coast.

Catalan nationalists claim the “Hydrological Plan for the Ebro River Basin” is unsafe for the local environment, and also unfair for local farmers dependant on the river for irrigation.

During the demo Josep Rull, Catalan Minister of Planning and Sustainability, criticised the Hydrological

Plan as “bad for Catalonia, bad for the river delta and bad for irrigation farmers”.

Catalan politicians have asked the European Union to intervene in the matter, and bring in measures to block the proposed plan.

Many Catalans believe Catalonia would be more prosperous if it were independent from Spain. And last November, the Catalan Parliament voted in favour of a resolution to split from Spain by 2017.

The Spanish Government has repeatedly ruled out the possibility of independence for Catalonia, a resourcerich region that provides at least one-fifth of Spain’s gross domestic product (GDP).

And many Catalans believe they are taxed disproportionately by the Madrid rulers.

Private rental law ‘so unfair’ THE Canarian Holiday Rental Association (Ascav) has blasted the Autonomous Government for implementing a regulation which is “arbitrary flawed and violates numerous constitutional principles”.

Police pounce on suspect terrorists

SEVEN men, believed to be part of a jihadist group, were arrested in Spain on Sunday, believed to have been supplying weapons and bomb-making equipment to ISIS leaders in Syria and Iraq.

Six were held during dawn raids in Alicante, Valencia and Spain’s north African enclave of Ceuta, with the seventh picked up hours later.

Jorge Fernandez Diaz, Spain’s acting Interior Minister, said they were understood to have sent the weapons in shipping containers, disguised

as humanitarian aid.

Police described the material, including electronics equipment and cash, as “essential” to sustaining the activities of the two terrorist groups they are accused of supplying.

Five of those being held are Spanish, of Syrian, Jordanian and Moroccan origin. The other two Spanish residents are from Syria and Morocco.

A spokesman for Spain’s Foreign Ministry said: “The head of the cell directed a network of firms, which enabled him to send the logistical material in sealed containers from Spanish ports to terrorist groups, operating in Syria and Iraq, without raising suspicion.

“These regular supplies directly benefited the continuity and strengthening of terrorist structures in Syria and Iraq.”

Sunday’s arrests brought the total number of detainees since the start of 2015 in Spain of alleged jihadists to 82.

The suspects were taken to Madrid for a private court hearing where a judge remanded them in custody.

Spanish police have led a series of operations against suspected Islamic terrorists since the January 2015 massacre in the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Four men were arrested in Ceuta shortly after the attack, with Spain’s Interior Minister at the time describing them as having a “very similar profile” to the French extremists who killed 11 people and injured another 12 during the Charlie Hebdo killings.

Three men including a friend of the Moroccan gunman overpowered on a Paris-bound train last August, were held in Madrid during dawn raids in November.

Missing mum: Boyfriend is yet to meet with police THE boyfriend of missing Scot Lisa Brown has not been interviewed by police, despite returning to Spain with the finger of suspicion allegedly being pointed at him.

Simon Corner, 33, was said to have flown back from the Far East more than two weeks ago and promised to meet detectives, who want to quiz him about Li-

sa’s disappearance. Officers say they have yet to hear from Liverpoolborn boat owner, and a source said: “They want to speak to him but there is no arrest warrant out for him because there is no evidence he has committed any wrong-doing.”

Mr Corner’s whereabouts are unknown since he flew to Malaga from Phnom Penh,

in Cambodia, on 19th January after more than two months away.

Lisa, 32, from Dumbarton, who has an eight-year-old son Marco, was last spotted at her home in Guadiaro on the Costa del Sol on 4th November.

It emerged last week that her car had been vandalised in the months leading up to her disappearance.

Ascav, furious that a ruling prohibiting the private renting of property in residential areas is set to become law, insists there should be further discussion to find a solution.

The so-called Rules of Vacation Homes of the Canary Islands, approved by the Executive via a 2015 decree “effectively came into force the following day”, according to a report commissioned by Manuel Sarmiento, Professor of Administrative Law at the University of Las Palmas.

Javier Valentin, Ascav Vice-President, told a press conference: “This independent review, which is over 100 pages long, shows that some provisions are contrary to Spanish law and violate the rights of citizens.”

His organisation believes that the regional legislation “violates the law of sustainable economy and free competition among other provisions and rights.

“For example, it prohibits the rental of holiday

homes in tourist areas and sets unrealistic barriers to common sense,” he added, insisting there was no reason why owners shouldn’t rent their homes to those who live in tourist areas.

“There are many visitors from outside our islands who just want to spend their vacation in a house like they would at home, and it’s precisely in those areas that they are most attracted to.”

Valentin argues that the content of this report reveals that “there is significant pressure from the hotel sector•”.

He is sure that hotels

do not want any form of property renting to tourists, and that they have pressured the Autonomous Government to introduce this action.

He says: “The Parliament of the Canary Islands has deprived rental owners, and they have even refused the possibility of discussing this important matter.”

It is believed that 1,300,000 people visited the archipelago in 2014 and used privately-rented accommodation.

Valentin adds: “This represents 10% of the tourists who come to the islands. It’s a massive part of our tourist market.”

Was Hatton Garden Basil a former cop?

“BASIL”, the mysterious raider who disappeared after the Hatton Garden heist, is a former policeman who had inside information.

A letter from a ringleader, received by Sky News, suggests he was the “brains” behind the entire multi-millionpound robbery.

Danny Jones, awaiting sentence for the £14m raid, wrote from Belmarsh Prison: “I can say that someone told me he was an ex-policeman, who got into security by the guy who introduced him to me.

“He said Basil heard about me from a close friend on the police force, as I was arrested for a similar raid in

Bond Street in 2010.

Basil was the brains, as I was recruited by him. He let me in on the night of the burglary, and he hid keys and codes throughout the building.”

Jones is adamant he does not know Basil’s identity - and even if he did, he would not reveal it.

“I saw Basil about four times throughout,” he

wrote. “He came and went. I don’t know nothing about him ... where he lives. I wasn’t interested.

“I wouldn’t give him up, as I wouldn’t grass.

It’s not a done thing where I come from as I fear for family members.”

Jones, a career criminal, has admitted his part in the Hatton Garden raid.

A WOMAN student, diagnosed with an aggressive form of blood cancer, has been told that a stem-cell donor has been found, despite a worldwide, “needlein-a-haystack” search.

Lara Casalotti, from Hampstead in north London, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in December 2015.

The 24-year-old was told during a trip to Thailand that her best hope of a cure was a stem-cell transplant.

Her mixed Thai and Italian heritage meant the odds of finding a match were highly unlikely, with only 3% of mixed-race donors on public stem-cell registers worldwide.

The story prompted a global campaign to help Lara find a match.

Celebrities, including Prime Minister David Cameron and novelist

JK Rowling, backed the Match4Lara appeal, launched by cancer charity Anthony Nolan.

After searching various countries, including Thailand, the US and Italy, the organisation found a match.

The donor’s identity has to be kept a secret because to patientdonor confidentiality regulations, but it is hoped the person will donate the stem cells in March.

Lara, studying for a Masters in global migration at University College London, said: “Thanks to everyone’s immense support, I have always stayed hopeful that I would find one. But I realise how lucky I have been, given how difficult it was to find that donor.

“I want to keep urging people to sign up to the donor registries so that everyone can have a chance of finding their match.”

Lara’s mother, Supanya, said: “As a mum, I feel pure relief because we knew the odds were stacked against Lara.

“Whoever the donor is, the person will never, ever know how grateful I am. The transplant is still a few weeks away and I wish I could wrap the stem cells in cotton wool to keep them safe.

“We know we have a long road ahead because a transplant is an extremely serious procedure, But knowing there is a good match for Lara is the weight off our shoulders we desperately needed.”

Lara’s brother, Seb, 20, said: “We’ve been so lucky in finding a match, but we know that others are not so fortunate.

“The Match4Lara events planned around the world over the coming weeks will go ahead as planned, so that other families can one day receive the same good news.”

He added: “This campaign was hatched around the dinner table, and we never expected it to receive such incredible support.

“We were inspired by the Match4Aary campaign, who is still waiting for a match, so we need people to keep signing up to registries worldwide.”

Lara’s family estimate that the number of people worldwide who have joined a stem-cell register as a result is well in excess of 20,000.

The Anthony Nolan charity also saw an unprecedented spike in new donors from black, Asian, ethnic minority and mixed-race backgrounds in the UK. Ann O’Leary, head of register development at Anthony Nolan, said: “We’re over the moon that we’ve been able to find a suitable donor for Lara, and that she’s now able to begin her transplant journey.

“We’re so grateful to Lara and all of her incredible supporters for spreading the word about the simple, but vital, act of donating stem cells.

“By diversifying the donor register, they have given hope to so many other people from ethnic minority and mixed-race communities.”

Nothing stops DJ Matt MATT Howes is the kind of guy who lifts you, lifts your spirits within minutes … whether or not he realises it!

He was 28 yesterday (Thursday) and is a DJ, perhaps the most special disc-spinner of all because he has just one arm. The other one was virtually wrenched off in a nasty accident in Malia, Crete, some four years ago on his way home from a gig.

“I swerved my motorbike to avoid a car coming towards me on the wrong side of the road and ran into a metal barrier,” he recalled.

“My arm was virtually amputated in the collision, and I died twice in the ambulance. Fortunately, I didn’t know anything about it. The medics revived me both times, and I spent six days in hospital recovering.”

Then, with a reassur-

ing grin, Matt said: “I was back working a fortnight later. I was determined right from the start that nothing would ever beat me because of my disability.”

It hasn’t. Apart from being a resident DJ in Tenerife over the years he has become a global phenomena: wanted everywhere! And his determination to succeed shines through with his every word.

“There were obviously the doubters, and some bad stuff was written about me,” he said. “So I set out to beat a world record - just to show I could.”

With that, he aimed at becoming the first DJ ever to mix with four decks and achieve the correct sound - and all with his left arm.

“I did it virtually straight away, but I’m still learning all the time,” said Matt, who specialises in Grime and House Music.

“I suppose you could say I’ve got a split personality: Grime with

Top-10 hit-maker and rapper Devlin, with whom I tour, and House Music on BBC Radio 1Xtra, where I once had a regular show.”

Now, his address is

strictly NFA - no fixed abode - because his talent takes him all over the globe. “I’ve played in 14 countries so far,” he says proudly, and there are more to follow.

Let me take a selfie!

Recently Oasis Fm and Siam Park ran a competition that asked listeners to create a funny selfie!

There were hundreds of entries and this was whittled down to a final short list of six. The public then voted on the Oasis Fm Tenerife facebook site for their favourite and there were over 45,000 views

and votes. There were two winners and this week they collected their fab prizes. These were year long passes at Siam Park or Loro Parque.

The winners were Emma Cowley and

Geoff Bidwell who collected on behalf of Michelle Sharkey.

But how on earth does the world’s only professional one-armed DJ operate a turntable?

“You just do if you want to,” he stressed. “And I wanted to. After all, you have to learn many things with this disability., including tying your shoelaces.”

Matt, who has been DJing since he was 14, was playing to packed clubs every night at the height of Malia’s party season before his accident, but it was never career-threatening.

Not for him, anyway.

Just two weeks after leaving hospital, and still carrying 70 stitches, he was back there, entertaining a 1,000-strong crowd, without having practised one-handed.

“It was the best experience of my life,” he said.

“The place erupted.

It was totally surreal pure euphoria.

“I never doubted that my DJ career was over when I lost my arm. It just spurred me on to do it even more.

“Being a DJ is giving people something they can take away and remember. It is one of the luckiest and rewarding jobs out there.”

But on his return to hometown Norwich to recuperate after his season finished there, reality set in. “I was completely devastated, but at the same time I was genuinely happy to be alive because I could have died,” he said.

“From that moment, I knew things were never going to be the same.

There was a lot of mixed emotions - an emotional overload - because I knew I could have died.”

Once back in Norwich, he had to learn to walk again because of the extensive injuries to his legs. “I hadn’t come to terms with what happened and it took a while for it to sink in.” he said. “I felt a bit sorry for myself, probably because I was missing out on all the action.”

But after resting for a month, he closed the book on his accident and went back to Malia to DJ again at Candy, the resort’s biggest club.

“I was DJing every night and sunbathing every day,” he said. “I was back home, behind the decks with a crowd in front of me.”

Nowadays, Matt’s popularity continues to spread almost the world over. And I’ve still got loads of ambition,” he added.

Right now, though, you will find him in the popular Kaluna Beach Club. Tomorrow (Saturday) he is headlining and judging the Turntable Takeover DJ competition at Kaluna Beach Club in Torviscas.

It’s a special event for would-be DJs, which is being broadcast live on Oasis Fm. Kaluna boss James and his right hand man Billy hope that Matt will be here during the summer, but right now he is just concentrating on this weekend. “I have fond memories of Tenerife and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Matt is also helping to support others like himself as an ambassador and fund-raiser for UK charity The LimblessAssociation. He is keen to inspire and reassure others going through a similar experience that they can do anything they set their hearts on. The message comes through with his every breath!

And he really is a oneoff, with an irrepressible sense of humour. “I’m taking time off soon to write my autobiography,” he announced, straight-faced: “It’s called Out On A Limb.”

Brilliant title. Brilliant man!

Sixth moon walker dies

We won’t Say Yay to our Eurovision entry

The astronaut’s family confirmed his death at a Florida hospice in West Palm Beach.

His Apollo 14 lunar module landed on 5th February 1971 and he died on the 45th anniversary of the space adventure, NASA officials tweeting their condolences.

Mitchell spent more than nine hours on the moon’s surface as part of the Space Agency’s Apollo 14 mission.

In his later years Mitchell, who supported research into telepathy and remote healing, also claimed that aliens had visited Earth, helping to prevent a nuclear war.

In his 1996 autobiography. Mitchell said he’d had an “epiphany” in space, which, he said, eventually led him to devoting his life to studying the mind and

Lil’ Chris just couldn’t cope with his TV fame TELEVISION singer Lil’ Chris, who died on 23rd March last year, took his own life after struggling with to cope with fame and depression.

That was the conclusion of Suffolk coroner Peter Dean, who said of the 24-year-old pop star.

“Clearly, he was a very talented young man who found fame at an early age.

“Sadly, that fame also brought with it difficulties and problems - but he had shown a desire to relaunch that career once more.”

An inquest into the death of Lil’ Chris - real name Chris Hardman - heard that he rose to fame at the age of 15 in the TV series Rock School and had been in contact with mental health services throughout his career.

He was later offered a solo deal and went on to have a 2006 top-five hit with Checkin’ It Out. Mr Hardman told friends that the pressures of fame had exacerbated his feelings of paranoia and anxiety.

The inquest heard that he had spent the night before his death “chilling” with friends at his flat in Lowestoft, Suffolk.

He attempted to contact his GP and mental

health workers about concerns with his medication the following day, but there was no indication that he posed an immediate risk to himself.

At 11.48am his flatmate, AJ Sutton, returned to find him hanging. He raised the alarm and tried to resuscitate his friend, but nothing could be done.

Mr Hardman’s sister Hannah, who attended the hearing with their

parents Ian and Karen, said that he had been determined to overcome his difficulties and highlight the prevalence of mental illness among young men.

She added: “He had an amazing experience as a singer and celebrity, and it is difficult to regret a moment of that.

“Nobody who knew him would have a bad word to say - he was the funniest, most lovely, practical joker you could ever meet.

“But at the same time, it was very difficult for him and he spoke very openly about his depression.

“The one thing we would like to take away from this tragedy is to get people speaking more openly about mental illness. “Unfortunately, it is something society cannot yet cure.

But by talking about it we can, hopefully, help people in a similar situation. I know that is what he wanted.”

A MEMBER of the country’s top language authority has criticised Spain’s Eurovision Song Contest entry … because it is sung entirely in English!

“moral and cultural responsibility” to protect the language.

The academy took similar umbrage with the mixed EnglishSpanish lyrics of the country’s 2014 entry.

Barei defended her song last month after the broadcaster asked her to include some Spanish lyrics. “I have nothing against our language, of course, but my project is in English,” she said.

“We might not like it, but it is much more international than Castilian.”

Even so, she’ll have fingers-crossed that the language change prompts a reversal in Eurovision fortunes for Spain, which hasn’t tasted success for more than 40 years.

The country, a winner in 1968 with La, La, La, shared the glory with three other countries a year later, in a rare four-way tie which included Lulu’s BoomBang-A-Bang.

And while previous entries featured some lyrics in English, the 1978 offering also dabbled in French!

Scot killed by elephant A SCOTTISH tourist, on holiday in Thailand with his 16-yearold stepdaughter, died after being gored by an elephant.

Gareth Crowe, 36, and his unnamed stepdaughter, had been riding the animal when, apparently, it turned on its handler on the island of Koh Samui.

The 13-year-old elephant, called Golf, was understood to have become agitated when its handler stopped in a forested area to take pictures.

The beast struck the handler with its trunk, before stabbing him in the torso with a tusk, causing serious injuries.

It then threw Mr Crowe and his stepdaughter from its back. He trampled on the Scot and gored him with a tusk, killing him instantly. It ran off into the forest, while the teenager was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

The elephant had, re-

portedly, appeared upset shortly before lashing out, refusing to follow instructions.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We are offering support to the family of a British national who has, sadly, died following an incident in Koh Samui. And we are making contact with the local authorities to seek further information.”

The World Animal Protection charity said that while its thoughts were with Mr Crowe’s loved ones, it was a “stark reminder” that elephants were not meant to be ridden.

A spokeswoman said: “Elephants are cruelly abused to tame them enough so they give rides and perform in shows. Most tourists don’t know about these abuses, or the potential danger they put themselves in.

“If you can ride it, hug it or have a selfie with a wild animal, then the chances are it is cruel, and the animal is suffering.”

be an increase rather than a fall, despite the Bank reducing its forecast for GDP (Gross Domestic Profit) to 2.2% - because the UK has been affected by the weakening global economy - instead of the previously-predicted 2.5%.

Since 2014, there have been mixed messages about the timeline for a rate increase, but Mr Carney held fast and

said the MPC would not be pushed to conform to a fixed date, or period, but would wait for the economy to improve.

He went on to say that negative rates had not been discussed at the last MPC meeting.

And when asked about any contingency plans by the Bank regarding Brexit, he hinted that - much like the Scottish Referendum - these

would be revealed after the event.

The pound has fallen 5% since November, with an interest-rate increase appearing unlikely in the near future. And, in addition, there’s the currentlyhot topic of Brexit.

Swiss bank Credit Suisse said that if Britain were to leave the EU, a noticeable reduction in business investment, hiring and confidence would mean a drop in capital flowing into the UK, leading to a sharp fall in Sterling.

US Investment bank

Goldman Sachs, which supports the “Britain Stronger in Europe” campaign, agreed, warning that Sterling could be hit by as much as 15-20% in the shortterm, if Britain voted against the EU. However, Goldman’s team of analysts,which believes Britain will stay in the EU, predicts the pound returning to 1.40+ against the Euro in 12 months.

It’s eagles v drones THE Met Police is considering using eagles to intercept drones, because of concerns that the miniaircraft are being used to commit crime.

The Met’s interest in using the birds of prey follows trials in the Netherlands. The pilot-less drones, controlled remotely, are already used by police forces to capture footage on difficult terrain, including cliffs.

But it is believed that criminals are also using the new technology. In November, the Ministry of Justice said a drone used to smuggle mobile phones, SIM cards and drugs into the grounds of HMP Manchester had been recovered by guards.

And the MoJ reported nine attempts to

use drones to infiltrate prisons in England and Wales in the first five months of 2015.

A think-tank has also warned that drones could be used by terrorist groups. The UK Air Proximity Board said last month that drones had been involved in four serious near-misses at UK airports.

The eagles would, says the Met, be a big help by taking down the aircraft, which they would consider to be prey.

But Jemima ParryJones, director of the International Centre of Birds of Prey in Gloucestershire, said the idea was just a gimmick. “Eagles are big, powerful birds and they should not be flown in built-up areas,” she said.

“And secondly, in terms of the safety of the bird, you’re asking it to grab hold of a drone, which often has four ro-

tating blades keeping it in the air. “If the UK police are asking the right experts, they should listen to our advice. If you don’t believe us, try putting your own fingers into the propeller of a reasonably-sized drone and see what happens.”

An RSPCA spokesman said: “In principle, we would not have an issue with police forces training eagles in an attempt to tackle drones. But we would have concerns over the welfare of the birds.

“At the moment, there is not enough information available for us to be able to make an informed comment.”

A Met Police spokesman said: “As would be expected in an organisation that is transforming, we take an interest in all innovative ideas and will, of course, be looking at the work of the Dutch police’s use of eagles.”

TUI Group, the world’s largest tour operator, is blaming security concerns among its customers for a 40% fall in bookings for Turkey holidays.

But Turkey’s loss is Spain’s gain because Irish holiday-makers are heading there instead, contributing to a 13% increase in average revenue per bed at TUI’s Riu hotel chain.

And it is leading to a capacity squeeze in the country, chief executive Fritz Joussen told journalists on a conference call. “Spain is pretty much sold out,” he said.

“Pricing there and in other countries viewed as less-prone to terrorism will remain high because hotel operators won’t have to offer lastminute discounts to fill empty beds.”

TUI, the Londonlisted company which made the Turkey announcement in its first-quarter results, said it was maintaining guidance for a 10% rise in underlying full-

year profits, despite the slump. The firm, which is behind the Thomson and First Choice brands, said it had instead expanded capacity in countries such as Spain and Greece in response, and has also invested in Cape Verde and Bulgaria.

Terror attacks in Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and Paris in recent months have hit demand for the travel industry, while the Zika outbreak in the Americas is also hurting bookings.

The start to any year is crucial for holiday firms because the bulk of summer bookings tend to be made during the first three months.

TUI said demand for Turkish breaks fell particularly in Germany, after 10 Germans were killed in last month’s suicide bombing in Istanbul. Some 14% of its customers visited the country last summer.

The travel company reported a 220.2m-euro (£171.2m) loss before tax between October and December - traditionally a quiet period - despite a 5% revenue rise.

Its officials stopped flights to Sharm el-

Sheikh in November following the bombing of a Russian airliner, while 33 of its customers were killed in the Tunisian beach massacre last June.

Security fears are, as expected, likely to pull holiday costs down in areas considered potentially hostile, but stronger demand elsewhere could force those prices higher.

No-frills airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet have reacted to the concerns by cutting prices in recent months - aided by weaker fuel costs.

Friedrich Jousse, TUI chief executive, said: “Our scale business model and own hotel content means we have been able to act quickly to remix capacity to alternative, profitable destinations.

“In addition, our own hotels in destinations outside Turkey - such as Spain and the Canaries - are benefiting from the shift in demand.

“Based on current trading, and the resilience of our integrated business model, we continue expecting to deliver underlying profit growth of at least 10% in 2015/16.”

Penelope Keith takes to the road again for a 2nd series, exploring the nation’s smallest communities.

Thatched cottages, the local shop, quaint church spires and games on the green - are just some of the things to be found amongst the 10,000 villages up and down the country.

A proud villager in the home-counties for nearly 40 years, Penelope heads to four very different regions: Devon and Cor wall; Sussex and Kent; the stunning Cumbrian landscape of the Lake District; and Deeside in Scotland. In this first episode Penelope is in Devon and Cornwall - a land of rugged coastal communities and distinct identities forged over centuries, but also a region visited by five million people each year.

Penelope travels to a former silver mining village, a cliff-edge fishing village, the most exposed theatre in the country, and the small communities near Fowey Harbour.

Chinese New Year 2016 - The Biggest Celebration On Earth BBC2, 21.00

This extravagant, eye-opening and astonishing series immerses us in one of the most spectacular events on earth, getting to the heart of what it is to be Chinese in the 21st century. With Kate Humble, The Hairy Bikers, actress and presenter Jing Lusi and Ant Anstead presenting across three fantastically rich episodes, we will mark China’s extraordinary annual celebration.

In episode one, Kate Humble, Jing Lusi and Ant Anstead follow the lead up to New Year at the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival - an extraordinary sub-zero celebration in China’s far north east. It’s an ice wonderland, full of people braving the cold, diving into frozen water and enjoying themselves at minus 30 degrees.

The three also experience the New Year transport rush and crush in Beijing, following an Anglo-Chinese family back to China, joining the baggage handlers at the train station and battling through Beijing traffic.

2016 is the Year of the Monkey and Kate goes in search of the extremely rare Snub-Nosed Monkeys of Yunnan. She goes on a ‘poo hunt’, looking for monkey faeces to test for their health. Jing experiences the spectacular showers of sparks from ancient fireworks made from liquid metal by Mr. Xue, the last practitioner of this dying craft - his only protection is a sheepskin coat and straw hat. Ant finds out how an entire ice city is made from just frozen river water, sculpted to make full-sized buildings that are illuminated beautifully at night.

Meanwhile, the Hairy Bikers, Dave and Si, join the largest motorbike flotilla on earth, as thousands of migrant workers in Guangzhou province head for home as New Year approaches. It’s an extraordinary scene as workers from the city go back to their home villages, often for the only time in a year. The Bikers join the volunteers helping the motorcyclists as they head carefully back home on bikes loaded high with people and presents.

Matt Baker and Ellie Harrison are in Norfolk. Matt joins students training to be gamekeepers on a clay pigeon shoot - however, he discovers that conservation is also a big part their education. Matt sees how to butcher a haunch of venison and sits down with the students to enjoy some homemade venison stew. Ellie reveals how cranes have returned to Norfolk after an absence of four hundred years from the UK countryside. It is thanks to the efforts of naturalist John Buxton, who kept their presence secret, that the birds have made a comback. On Hickling Broad, Ellie sees cranes beginning their courtship rituals, and she also visits Berney Marshes to find out how the RSPB has teamed up with local land owners and farmers to help manage water levels for wetland birds.

Meanwhile, Adam Henson is in Scotland at the worldfamous Stirling bull sales, and Olympic boxer Nicola Adams talks about her favourite part of the British countryside.

Hosted by renowned gardener and ITV Daytime favourite Alan Titchmarsh, Masterpiece With Alan Titchmarsh is a unique new game show taking place in some of the most stunning stately homes across Britain.

The brand new series, which was the brainchild of Alan himself, sees teams comprised of antique and history fans go head to head in a series of challenges. From valuing antiques to deciphering the age of a collectible, the contestants must use their amateur antique skills to secure their position in the ‘Masterpiece Gallery’.

Once they enter the ‘Masterpiece Gallery’, each team must work out which of the three objects on display is the true ‘Masterpiece’, an item so exquisite or rare that it is worth £10,000 or more and add it to their collection.

The team that has successfully collected the most ‘Masterpieces’ wins a one thousand pound prize.

Host Alan said: “This is the first time I have come up with an idea for a game show so I’m really chuffed and excited. It plays to everyone’s curiosity as to the value of all kinds of collectibles and beautiful things, from classic cars to film memorabilia, posters and toys to works of art and antiques. And the series is filmed in some of our finest stately homes, so the scenery is pretty handsome, too. It’s been great fun to make and I think it’s fun to watch as well, with the viewers playing along to see if they can spot the Masterpieces, which are not always as obvious as they might seem.”

In the first episode, Alan heads to the beautiful Firle Place in East Sussex where the first round of eager contestants go head to head in a battle of the collectibles. But will their love of antiques be enough to take home the cash prize?

My Baby, Psychosis And Me reveals the frightening rollercoaster journey of two mums, for whom childbirth triggers Postpartum Psychosis, one of the most severe forms of mental illness there is, but from which there can be recovery with the right treatment.

It is a condition most expectant mothers and their families have never heard of, but it affect around one in every 500 women who give birth.

The sudden onset of a psychotic episode causes new mothers to be overwhelmed by extreme low or high moods, strange and dangerous thoughts, paranoia, delusions such as the belief that they have given birth to Jesus or the devil. This is the untold story of what it means to battle this terrifying condition. Filmed over six months, we closely follow the intense experiences of two women, Jenny and Hannah, and their families, as they are cared for at Winchester’s Mother And Baby Unit.

Behind the closed doors of this specialist psychiatric ward, Dr Alain Gregoire and his expert team give women the care and intensive treatment needed to bring them back to recovery. While psychosis is the most severe form of mental distress psychiatrists see, with the right medication and psychological support most women can return home within six weeks. And round-the-clock support with childcare enables mums and their babies to stay together, rather than face a damaging separation.

From the bedroom to the nursery, the hospital theatre to the psychiatrist’s chair, we see the most personal moments of motherhood and mental illness play out for Jenny and Hannah, as Dr Gregoire and his team face two of the most challenging cases they’ve experienced. But in one respect Jenny and Hannah are fortunate - they have access to the expert treatment they desperately need. With a severe shortage of specialist psychiatric care for mums-to-be and new mothers, it’s a postcode lottery whether women get the expert help they urgently need.

Get set for It’s Not Rocket Science, a brand new entertainment series that celebrates science and the world around us through thrilling, big-scale experiments and emotive personal stories.

Every week, one of the presenters will put their lives in jeopardy in a series of daredevil, high-risk experiments, where only science can save them. Rachel plays with fire, quite literally, as she zip wires through a wall of flames, Ben Miller finds himself strapped to a high speed wrecking ball and hurtling towards Romesh, and Romesh is pinned to the floor with a full size fridge plummeting towards him.

Resident scientist Dr Kevin Fong will preside over the high-octane activity as the trio put their trust in science to survive…

The show will pose and solve numerous scientific quandaries, telling some emotional human-interest stories along the way. Can cuttingedge robotic exoskeletons enable a disabled father to walk again and fulfill his dream of walking his daughter down the aisle?

Adopted as a baby from China, Mei (Katie Leung) has had a contented upbringing in the UK. She’s grown up knowing little about her beginnings, but is the love of her parent’s life.

Out of the blue Mei gets a message from a journalist in China called Pan Qianyi, who tells Mei that her birth mother wants to meet her. She is desperate for Mei’s help. Her son, Ajun, the brother Mei has never met or even knew existed, is on death row for a crime he didn’t commit. Suddenly questions of abandonment and identity overwhelm Mei. Qianyi asks her to come to Guangzhou immediately. Telling her adoptive parents only that her mother wants to meet her, Mei is relieved when they agree she should go and must take this journey alone.

When Mei arrives in China, Qianyi takes her to meet her birth mother, Liu Ying, but their first meeting is not what she expected or hoped for.

Her mother can’t look her in the eye because she’s too ashamed of giving Mei up as a result of the one child policy.

Qianyi and Ying explain the desperate situation. Ajun has been convicted of killing an African man outside the nightclub where he works, but he was only an innocent bystander - the real killer is a rich Chinese ‘princeling’ whose wealthy father has corrupted the other witnesses into lying. With no connections Ying has little hope of fighting back, and they want Mei to help them get justice for Ajun before it’s too late.

Mei is overwhelmed: she has no connections or idea what to do.

Mei worries she has made a mistake in coming, and her parents urge her to come home. But then a meeting with the Citizen’s Justice Movement offers hope, and when Qianyi introduces her to Ajun, the emotional connection between them is instantaneous - and makes Mei decide to stay.

The Great Sport Relief Bake Off BBC1, 20:00 Celebrities take on baking challenges for Sport Relief. Ed Byrne hosts this third episode, in which four celebrities face three challenges set by judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. The celebrities taking up the baking baton this time are exSpice Girl Geri Horner, BBC world affairs editor John Simpson, footballer and pundit Jermaine Jenas, and 1990s pop sensation Louise Redknapp. The first hurdle for the bakers is the signature challenge, where they take on savoury tarts. Up next it’s the technical challenge, Mary’s chocolate and beetroot tray bake. The bakers must follow a stripped-back recipe to produce this moist, malty sponge, covered with a cream-cheese icing and decorated with candied beetroot. On day two the bakers attempt to make 3D models of their favourite sporting moments out of biscuits. Clare Balding visits Kenya to learn about the work of Sport relief there.

Sea Cities: Liverpool BBC2, 19.00

Around the coast of Britain are cities where the sea shapes people’s lives. In tonight’s episode we head to the North West of England - Liverpool.

Liverpool’s iconic waterfront is the backdrop to a resurgent cruise industry and home turf for Angie Redhead (pictured), the city’s Cruise Terminal Manager. A true ambassador for Liverpool, she offers a friendly welcome to tourists and ships’ crews alike. But she has a big day ahead of her. After four years of planning, Cunard Line’s Three Queens cruise ships are rendezvousing in the Mersey for the company’s 175th anniversary. Thousands of people turn out to watch a choreographed River Dance by the ships in a memorable display that rekindles Liverpool’s pride in its shipping heritage.

The Mersey is also the backdrop for an annual charity swim, but the rainy weather, tides, cold water and even jellyfish conspire against the brave souls raising cash for their favourite causes. Two people head for hospital afterwards - but all recover.

And the marine industry is a family affair for Carmet Tug Company.

Three generations of Metcalfs run the Merseyside firm that operates up and down the Manchester Ship canal as well as further afield. Grandad Ian founded the company – but now his son and grandson shoulder most of the responsibilities while he claims to do the crossword in the office!

By Jamie Droo IT’S a strange month every year, and this time it’s a Leap Year, so February is set to last an extra 24 hours.

The entertainment scene can be quiet during this short month, but other areas are still booming.

One such locality is Parque de la Paz. This close-knit strip of bars never seems to fail during the quiet months of the winter season.

It always seems strange to call this the winter season, when you can still walk around in shorts and T-shirt in the evening.

But I suppose that is a typical Canarian winter.

Throughout the years, this area has become extremely popular with visitors to the Island.

Within 150 metres, there is a bit of everything going on.

In fact, if you choose to make a night out along Parque de la Paz and can´t find some kind of entertainment to suit your taste, I’d say you should probably be in a retirement home in Eastbourne with a jigsaw puzzle, or watching gardening programmes on BBC2.

Entertainment can be delivered in so many ways, but the main choices taken by barowners are to present cabaret shows, with a resident compere at the helm holding the night together.

They may also choose to have a karaoke system in place. There are two main karaoke venues along this strip, and one is Frankie’s bar.

This is a small bar compared with the others along the strip, but every time I pass by it is always full, and there is a great atmosphere among the staff and customers.

Suzy Diamond is the compere there and presents different shows every night at 11pm.

A WEEKEND ON THE PAZ (Part 1)

catch some of the Island’s fine tribute acts.

Over the weekends, you can see Adam Saint’s Rod Stewart show on a Saturday.

Adam is hugely popular in this bar and it is recommended that you get in to the bar early if you want a seat and a good view of the stage.

Although all the bars have seating on their terraces, the bars are so close together that, in some cases, you can listen to what’s going on in the bar next door with your right ear, while taking in Rod classics with your left.

So it is best to get a position either inside the bar or a seat on the terrace, as central as possible. This really applies to the whole strip. However, some just enjoy being on the strip and taking in the vibrant atmosphere created, because of the closeness of everything.

On a Sunday night you can see Leslie Presley´s Elvis show.

Les has been here for some years and is a huge Elvis fan, delivering The King’s classic songs with passion.

Suited and booted in an identical, sequinned Presley catsuit, as Leslie emulates the moves that made Presley the icon he was and still is.

Both these weekend artistes in Frankie’s

bar are regularly on stage for a lot longer than their allotted time, which shows they thoroughly enjoy what they do.

They both ensure that their audience always go away with good memories of a fabulous night.

In stark contrast to Frankie’s bar, on one side you will find the Bulls Head - a much bigger bar, attracting a completely different crowd.

It features resident band The Vagabonds on stage every night, from 10pm. They are a group of highly-talented musicians, producing an excellent sound.

The main genre of their music is rock, although they really can play anything. Lead vocals are provided by Steve Tyler, who won the TEAs award for Best Male Vocalist in 2013.

Steve looks every inch the rock singer. With

long hair and an athletic appearance, coupled with his talented musicians, it is easy to see why this band are considered the best on the Island.

On the other side of Frankie’s bar you will find Coconut Joes. This again offers a different kind of entertainment.

As well as serving food, this bar has singers and musicians every night from 9.30pm.

The bar doesn’t have a resident compere

but presents a selection of the Island’s finest. Most nights it has two acts appearing. On Saturday night, Margo is first to take the stage. This talented lady plays guitar, sings songs from different genres and excels in country rock and contemporary rock.

At 11.30pm, Helena, a Scottish singer and also a TEAs Best Female Singer, takes over for the last hour of live entertainment in CJs. Helena covers all genres and, regularly, has the whole bar up dancing. She reads the crowd well and draws from her experience and huge repertoire of songs to ensure they all enjoy their night.

Helena can also be seen on Sunday night, from the same time, but her show comprises completely different songs.

Chris Irinou, starting the night off on Sundays, plays guitar and delivers songs from all genres, entertaining from 9.30-11.30pm.

And over the weekend, these three singers and musicians bring so much variety to this bar.

This is just a small part of Parque de la Paz. There are at least five other bars offering live entertainment along this popular strip, as well as bars that are simply good little boozers, like The Highlander, where entertainment comes in the form of great banter from the bar staff, namely Simon ‘Fish’ Gibbard who is an entertainer without realising it.

This little bar is always busy, and many customers love Simon’s wit and charm, which all adds up to holding their attention.

No wonder they keep coming back, night after night.

We can all get stuck in the rat race and just plod on with life, but never miss an opportunity if there is something out there that really floats your boat.

So, flower-lovers and gardening enthusiasts, how do you fancy incorporating a trip to the Dutch Tulip Festival this Spring, alongside a mini-break to the fascinating city of Amsterdam? It certainly won’t disappoint! Walking around the gardens, you’ll see colourful flower beds of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and so many other flowering bulbs.

late March to the middle of May and, depending on when you visit, you’ll see different flowers in bloom.

In early April, the tulips are just starting to flower in the outdoor beds, and there are thousands on the inside. Some of the best and most interesting tulips are in the indoor pavilions.

The pavilions are where you’ll see just about every tulip colour and type imaginable, and these are in flower for the entire festival.

They’re always experimenting with new colours and types of tulips.

You’ll find singles and doubles in the most amazing colours.

And if you love tulips, or flowers and gardening in general, you’ll love Keukenhof. One of the favourites is probably the blue-and-pinkfringed tulip. The black (or near-black) tulips are unique and unusual, too.

If you visit in March, you’ll also see many different colours of sweetsmelling hyacinths, which are under-rated in my opinion.

There are flower beds filled with pink, white, blue, yellow, and mauve hyacinths, and various varieties in pots in the pavilion.

You can pick up some bulbs to try to grow at

home if you like. You’ll find them at the Keukenhof gardens or at the floating garden centres on the Amsterdam canals.

Don’t forget that around Keukenhof, there are massive fields of tulips, which are almost better than the festival itself. Reserve enough time to explore the area outside the

gardens to see the famous tulip fields.

And you must try to visit at sunrise or sunset if you can because that will give you plenty of time to take photos of the tulip fields.

Keukenhof is located in Lisle, Holland. The event is an easy daytrip from Amsterdam or Leiden. Buses run regularly from both cit-

ies or, if driving, there is plenty of parking at the event.

No matter when you visit, there will always be thousands of bulbs flowering throughout the gardens, and you can also see hyacinths, daffodils, crocus, orchids, and other Spring flowers.

On the alternative day to the Festival, you have the opportunity to discover the exciting city of Amsterdam at your leisure.

Food Review: James’s Place

AS nature intended you to be … but is that how you should stay when it comes to your hair colour?

Right Place … for the perfect Sunday roast!

DO you love a home-cooked Sunday roast?

Most people will say yes to this tradition, which dates back centuries.

It sparks memories of the family round the table, talking and sharing the latest news while feasting on roast meat, roast and mashed potato, fresh vegetables, home-made Yorkshire pudding and thick, juicy gravy.

Okay, forget the hours of preparation and cooking, and the dreaded washing-up.

All this can be avoided, of course, because James’s Place, nestling in the heart of La Caleta, has the answer!

It is the only British, family-run bar-restaurant in La Caleta, and has just celebrated its five-year anniversary.

James and his sister, Emma, have staked a claim of restaurantstandard cuisine at pub prices.

We have eaten and enjoyed their food on numerous occasions, and that’s why we visited them again last Sunday.

We sat on the upper terrace, and had a lovely view of the hustle and bustle of this still-working fishing village, while enjoying a glass of crisp Zinfandel.

So many of you aren’t happy with the colour you were given, so you choose to change and modify.

By far the most popular service in our salon is colouring. We can sometimes colour non-stop, all day in the salon, giving clients the colours they desire.

Yet what should you look into before you go ahead with a new colour, or when reconsidering the colour you already have?

I’m a big fan of not

straying too far from your natural colour.

Yes, I might go mad on a client’s hair now and again with a more daring shade.

But there are many factors that come into place when choosing a colour. Look at your eye colour, study your skin tone, consider your clothing wardrobe.

This all has to happen before you press ahead with a new colour. Your skin tone and eye colour will play a big part in

choosing a new shade.

Don’t go too dark if you have a paler tone of skin.

Stay away from lighter colours if you tan easily, or have darker skin.

There’s nothing worse than seeing someone with a shade that just doesn’t match the rest of her natural features.

All this should be discussed with you at a consultation with your stylist.

There’s no point realising it just doesn’t suit you after the hair has been dried. Of course, you can alter your eye tone, play around with make-up and paint your eyebrows another shade.

But is this really how you should look, or don’t you think nature got it right in the first place?

Hair colour should complement not clash.

Nature knows best.

FLOWER POWER! My dining partner chose deep-fried camembert with cranberry sauce and salad for starters, and I chose the classic prawn cocktail, with a side order of garlic bread.

The camembert was crisp and gooey (on the inside) and, with the cranberry, went really well with the wine.

My prawn cocktail was a piece of art: plump, North-Atlantic prawns, a mixed salad with cucumber and tomatoes, and a well-seasoned sauce.

All this jogged the food memory-bank of childhood flavours past.

Now, to the main event, which was a choice of beef sirloin, chicken and pork.

My partner chose a mix of chicken and beef but, being a traditionalist, I went for the sirloin of beef, with horseradish and English mustard on the side.

Earlier, I had spoken with James, and he told me, with pride, that he trims, rolls and cooks the prime, beef sirloin on the day. That’s what swayed my decision to have just the beef.

It was amazing, just perfect … thick slices of succulent, melt-in-

the-mouth, flavoursome meat.

With the perfectlycooked Yorkshire pudding, crispy roasties, vegetables and homemade gravy, I made sure I finished this excellent roast.

The chicken-and-beef option was another winner and next time, I’ll definitely try that dish.

After a brief break, we perused the dessert menu, and what a choice: home-made carrot cake, lemon drizzle and, to our delight, apple crumble and thick custard, plus ice-cream and more.

We shared the crumble as we were nearly full after the first two courses.

It was another tasty, flavoursome home-made, comfort-food memory.

James’s Place has a superb day-and-night menu that also offers inside-and-out dining, a vibrant bar atmosphere and a games room, located next door, to keep the big and small kids happy.

As the saying goes at James’ Place: “We just haven’t met you yet.”

Forget dated prints and mumsy patterns, this year’s florals are right up there with the musthave looks. You may not want to wear it top to toe, but adding a splash of floral colour will really bring to life your Spring/ Summer wardrobe.

Don’t be scared to go

for larger prints and bolder colours because there’s nothing bashful about the new-look floral.

Many designers are opting for simple, onecolour pieces with sections of floral, to draw attention to that specific area. If you’re a plus-size, don’t go for small flowers on your clothing because this will only make your silhouette look bigger.

Instead, opt for handsize prints which will appear to make your frame trimmer. If you are

more on the slender side, choosing a smaller print will work better as you don’t want this look to drown your frame.

Stay away from last season’s Hawaiian prints and opt for more of a daintier, floral shape. It should look classy and chic, and not garish and cheap.

If you want to mix in this look without going overboard, opt for a more subtle approach by choosing a simple, coloured dress. But add in the floral touch with the use of a handbag or shoes. Just don’t overkill it.

It has never been my favourite look, but designers have brought floral bang up to date.

Save that sofa!

By Miruna Voicu THE sofa is one of the biggest furniture items in your home, and one that gets a lot of use.

This is partly because life has changed, and people spend more time in the lounge area.

That’s where they often choosing to eat, work and play, as well as the more traditional uses of entertaining, reading and watching TV. Comfort is a personal matter: some people prefer a high-backed sofa; others something more modern, with a lower, more square back.

We also sit on the sofa differently - some people with their feet up, others leaning on a high-arm reading, and others lying down, using the low arm as a pillow.

So, obviously, the choice of sofa is very much down to personal taste, and that´s before

you start on colour and texture!

Here in Tenerife, things are complicated even more, because a lot of sofas here are also sofabeds, to increase occupancy for holiday-makers, visitors or unexpected guests.

Fortunately, developments in technology and design mean that these can now be as comfortable as a sofa, and also as a bed, with a proper, sprung mattress.

One thing is for sure, since the sofa is such an important part of your home, you should buy the best you can afford.

Many shops sell sofas for a few hundred euros, but once you have been using it for a few months, you will realise why: lumpy frames and poor filling, which soon flattens and settles.

Go for a sofa with a solid frame, together with feather or quality foam cushions. If the cushion covers can be removed for washing this is an advantage, particularly in a rental situation. If you go for a sofa bed, make sure that the mechanism is of good quality, easy to

open/close and the mattress is adequate. Nowadays it´s possible to have sprung or dense foam mattress that will fold up but still be comfortable.

If you already have a sofa that meets all these requirements but is looking a bit tatty or tired, don’t be too quick to get rid of it. You may find it hard to replace with something of similar quality or comfort, and you already know that it fits and looks good.

Reupholstering your existing sofa is a costeffective option, and you get to choose from a huge range of colours and textures, samples of which can be brought to your home.

The cost is probably less than replacing it with one of the cheap, new sofas mentioned, and it will be as good as new and have a new lease of life.

If the sofa needs minor repairs, for example one or two of the cushions need refilling, or minor structural repairs, this is still a cost-effective solution.

Always get a quote from a professional before weighing up your options. But if your sofa is of good quality and if, perhaps, you spent a lot of money on it in the first place, or even brought it from the UK, consider getting it recovered.

You can give your home a complete facelift for much less than the replacement value. The company should also arrange to take the sofa away, and bring it back reupholstered and revitalised in a few days or perhaps do the work while you are away and store it for delivery on your return. *All items and services mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.

No bones about it, tea is so hip today

By Val Sainsbury IT’S is the perfect excuse to sit down with a nice cup of tea … research shows that tea drinkers have stronger bones, cutting their risk of painful fractures, including broken hips.

Just three cuppas a day is linked with a 30% lower risk of breaks.

The Australian researchers said the effect was so big that tea could become a “major addition to the dietary prevention of fracture”.

The International Osteoporosis Foundation estimates more than 200 million people worldwide have the disease.

Almost 30% of postmenopausal women in the US and Europe have osteoporosis. And at least 40% of these women, and up to 30% of men, will suffer a fracture in their lifetime as a result. Researchers from Flinders University, South Australia, tracked the health of almost 1,200 elderly women for 10 years. The volunteers, av-

erage age 80 at the start of the study, were regularly quizzed about their diet, with a particular emphasis on how much tea they drank. During the decade, the women collectively suffered 288 breaks, including 129 hip fractures. But those who drank at least three cups of tea a day were almost 30% less likely to break a bone over the decade than those who rarely or never consumed the stuff.

Importantly, the result stood when other factors linked to weakened bones, such as smoking and not exercising, were factored in.

It is thought that plant chemicals, called flavonoids, strengthen the bones by speeding building of new bone cells while slowing down the erosion of existing ones.

This is likely to be particularly important in old age, where bone tends to wear down quicker than it can be replaced.

Flavonoids, found in fruit and vegetables, are also good for the cardiac health, and it is known that a healthy heart is good for the bones.

Coffee also contains flavonoids, but tea was by

far the biggest source of the compounds in the women studied, as reported by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Dr Tim Bond, of the industry-funded Tea Advisory Panel, said: “This is good news for older tea drinkers in particular. Older women are at increased risk of fracture, which often leads to hospitalisation and nursing home stays at substantial cost.

“Consumption of three or more cups of tea each day is a pleasant activity and, according to the findings from this study, helps to maintain the bone health among older women.”

Sarah Leyland, of the National Osteoporosis Society, said other research had suggested drinking tea might help to prevent fractures.

She added: “It isn’t clear whether this is because tea contains flavonoids, plant-based compounds, fluoride or something else. “However, in general, a well-balanced diet with adequate calcium, protein and plenty of fruit and vegetables will provide the nutrients your bones need.”

Nandu hit the jackpot Nandu 46 Las Palmas 0 THE second weekend of rugby fixtures in the Canarian Sub18 League saw Nandu Youth travel to Gran Canaria for a clash with Las Palmas, whom they had never beaten.

Las Palmas are renowned for their physical prowess and forward play but, after two weeks of intensive training, the Nandu boys were up for the challenge - and they did not disappoint!

The first 20 minutes was an arm-wrestle between two packs vying for control, epitomised by gladiatorial hits from the likes of Nandu prop Prieto.

Under the evolving tactical awareness of half-backs Mateo Paolin

and Jacob Oakenfold, the team composed themselves and started to play with a style and finesse they had shown in training, but had yet to show in the league.

But all their years of hard work came together as they played with distinction. The deadlock was broken after 20 minutes with ever-present scrum-half Paolin reading the space between the ruck and first pillar to score his first try of the season.

The game continued with the forwards dominating the breakdown as the back-row combination of Juan, Mel and Facundo ensured that Nandu recycled 100% of ruck ball.

The lock pairing of Wil-

liam and Axel were the workhorses, supporting their team-mates and carrying the ball over the gain-line.

The second try came from wing David Tevosyan after a close strike move in midfield provided quick ball for the backs, whose handling skills carved open the defence to deliver the killer blow.

The scrum battle resulted in an emphatic victory for the Nandu tight forwards, who secured all their own ball, and stole four against the head.

Las Palmas fought bravely, confronting the challenge posed by Nandu boys and show-

ing determination and fortitude, even when the momentum swung in the visitors’ favour.

Nandu worked harder and improved as the game progressed, with another six second-half tries, coming from captain Oakenfold, Mateo Poalin, Tomas Jacob

(2), Juan Franco, and Mel Tena. Gabriel Trujillo kicked two conversions and Tomas Jacob the other for a 46-0 outcome.

It was one of Nandu’s finest displays of open rugby and the coaching staff, led by Wingate School teachers Jamie Whelan and Rachael Watson, could not be more proud of the effort put in by every youngster.

Their motto this season is “Earn It!” and it is

safe to say that the boys of Nandu certainly did.

Cats Welfare news

Our extra-special kitten WE receive daily calls from the public asking to help the sick and abandoned cats and kittens which have been found.

Last week, we received an emergency call for a poorly kitten with a difference. She was rushed to one of the vets we collaborate with for evaluation and treatment.

Bunny as we have called her, was severely dehydrated and, sadly, almost blind and deaf.

She has definitely been in someone’s home because, with her special needs, she wouldn’t have survived outside for long.

She is extremely affectionate and knows people, so there is no doubt she has been abandoned. Bunny is about five months old and pure white, with sky-blue eyes. We think she can see shadows, and may be able to hear very loud noises. But little else! We would love to find her a forever home, knowing that many people are concerned about taking on a cat with special needs.

Despite a dark, silent existence, deaf-blind cats can enjoy life since they rely on their keen sense of smell and their sense of touch through whiskers on the face and also on the lower leg.

A deaf-blind cat may hear you approaching by vibrations of the air and of the floor. To alert it to

your presence, you can blow gently in its direction.

At meal-times, blow across the food bowl to waft the scent towards it. Deaf-blind cats must be kept inside, where they will learn their way around. And, if possible, allow them a place where they can sunbathe near a closed window. A meshcovered window can provide ventilation and scents from outdoors.

But, of most importance, the room must be escape-proof for the cat’s own safety.

Catnip-scented toys will provide stimulation

and, if you want to give a deaf-blind cat occasional access to outside, a harness and lead will allow it to explore a garden or terrace safely.

Like blind cats, deafblind cats memorise their surroundings, but they are doubly at risk because they cannot hear dangers approaching.

Block off hazards, such as stairs, with a solid barrier, make sure the cat cannot stand on tiptoe and find the top of the barrier or it may decide to climb over!

And, as with a deaf cat, a noisy bell on its collar

will help you locate it as it explores.

Bunny has been spayed and will be provided with a microchip, injections and health book. There is no adoption fee, and all cats go on trial. We will provide extended help and advice to ensure she settles in easily.

Britney’s final curtain-call ADAM MARTIN 3/5/82-29/1/16

WE said goodbye last week to a lovely, lively, loved-by-all character, Adam Martin (a.k.a. Britney), who, sadly, passed away on 29th January at just 33.

Adam spent his final three months in Candelaria Hospital after a brief illness. He leaves behind his partner, Michael Crowther, who travelled every day to be by his side. They had lived in Tenerife since 2000.

Adam was adored by many people on the Island for his loveable and, sometimes, crazy antics. His admiration for Britney was known by all, and that was shown at his Memorial Service last week, when many of her songs were played.

Michael, his soul-mate and partner for many years, would like to thank everybody for attending the Service, and especially those who came from the UK to give Adam the send-off he deserved.

Adeje’s strong bond to Lions ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga has received a delegation from the Lions International organisation to strengthen its relationship with the Council.

Lions say it with kisses ARONA’S Las Galletas & Costa del Silencio Lions Club members are holding a Valentine’s Day fund-raiser at the Albatross Bar, Costa del Silencio, on Sunday, from 2-6pm.

Compere is “Funny Man” George King, who will introduce a host of local entertainers, all giving their time free in aid of the Lions and the local community. There will be a raffle with prizes galore.

Special thanks to everyone who attended the club’s fund-raising cof-

fee-and-cake morning at Silencio’s Cath’s Corner, where a spectacular total of 450 euros was raised.

And a big thanks to all the Lions’ ladies and friends of the Club, who contributed their home-baked cakes.

Stall-holders who brought their goods to sell, and gave generous donations to the club, also deserve a pat on the back.

Pet Podenco’s pretty pleased

The group was headed by Cristóbal Herrero García, local district head of the Spanish Lions club, together with Norman Goodall MBE and Prakash Udhawani, President and Zone Chief of Tenerife Sur Lions Club respectively. As well as discussing joint initiatives, the group unveiled a commemorative plaque at Costa Adeje, on the Police Station roundabout.

It is a visual commitment by both factions to the work the Lions are so well-known for around the world. And another one will be installed on the Jacaranda Hotel roundabout.

The Mayor said: “With this symbolic act, we highlight our commitment to people, to solidarity, to understanding. We understand

ONE lucky Podenco among the 80-plus at our refuge has been found a new home in Germany. And, after checking his suitcase to ensure we hadn’t forgotten any of his woolly jackets or many toys, he set off for the airport with a spring in his tail.

Although they are hunting dogs, primarily, Podencos also make excellent pets, and this one will soon be aware that he can build a new life with a loving family.

We have a gorgeous Great Dane with the most unusual markings looking for a new home.

He’s a lovely dog with a perfect temperament, but he does need a large garden or outside area because of his size.

Scotland the brave

THE Direct Telecom pool league battled bravely but couldn’t overcome Scotland in the annual international challenge match.

This ninth clash was keenly fought and, as always, there was some excellent pool. And lots of drinking!

The first match in Palms was a disappointment for the Direct Telecom lads as they bossed matters for most of the night.

Ahead early on, they failed to press home the advantage and Scotland stole a 15-15 draw.

On Saturday night, Scotland had reinforcements, while we had some illness and workrelated withdrawals. It made all the difference as the Scots took an 11-point advantage into Sunday’s final day.

It was always going to be tough to claw that back and even though the frames were close, the visitors got to the finishing line with a bit to spare.

Rewind A’s The Ripper was voted Player of the Tournament - and even though the match was lost, long-standing friendships were cemented. Next year, the 10th Anniversary Tour, promises to be the biggest event yet.

On Tuesday, it was back to the league bread and butter, and with Division One leaders Gaffers A not in action, the chasing pack made up some ground.

Fixture of the night was up in Chayofa, where Treehouse A were in action against Tenerife Hammers A in the fight for second spot.

The visitors made the early running, despite Scott seven-balling Wez from the break, as they moved into an early 3-1 lead. Treehouse fought back with the next two games, but Hammers responded to lead 5-3 going into the final session, Scott struck again,

winning his third game of the night to take a frame back. But Paul and Wez then held firm to get the Hammers over the line for a victory which takes them above Treehouse into second spot.

Dreamers A could have capitalised on the Treehouse defeat and moved up themselves, but they had a tricky home match against Palms B, who are breathing down their necks in the league.

The visitors were quickly in the groove, winning the first three frames. Gav got one back, and it would have been two but for Mark T picking up the cue ball when faced with a straight black after a foul by Wayne.

The rookie error would come back to haunt the hosts. Dreamers took the next four frames and looked good for victory, only for Palms to take two of the last three to steal a point!

After a slow start, Rewind A, trying to ensure a top-six finish, welcomed Bluebell A to Puerto Colon. The home team were favourites on paper, but the visitors were up for it, taking a quick twoframe lead, only to see The Ripper and John hit back for Rewind.

The second session saw wins alternating, leaving them poised at 4-4 going into the third session. The home team came out quickest, with Lee and The

In Division Two, Crown B took another step closer to promotion as they maintained their lead at the top. This week’s opponents travelling to Valle San Lorenzo were Hoppy’s B, but the home team were in a confident mood.

They started quickly, taking the early frames, and once they got their noses in front, they never looked back. Hoppy’s B put up a decent fight, but the Crown were just too strong and eased across the line with frames to spare.

Picasso’s A did their own promotion hops the world of good as they took on close rivals Splash Bar. The home side took first blood, only for Clive to come straight back. But Roy and Ken then made sure that Picasso’s took an early 3-1 lead. The second session ended all-square so the home team held a narrow 5-3 lead as the last four frames were played out.

Down in Los Abrigos, it was steak night as the Phoenix Potters hosted The Phoenix in one of the league’s most hotlycontested derbies. The away side were the inform team of the two and soon moved into a 3-1 lead which became 4-2 at the half-way point.

The Potters, fuelled by Werther’s Originals and Harvey’s Bristol Cream, tried to fight back. But their opponents were just too good on the

night and The Phoenix took the bragging rights.

They are now just two points behind their stablemates with a game in hand.

Palms A were looking to move up the league as they faced bottom side Tenerife Hammers C, but they had one of those nights. They left four blacks in the jaws, foul-potted another black and, generally, shot themselves in both feet.

The 8-4 setback makes it so tight at the bottom.

So it was Ken for the home team against Paul, with both players playing good pool. But Ken used his home advantage and, in a tight game, managed the black and the win by a narrow margin.

Just 24 hours later, Picassos chinned Tenerife Pool Tables to cut the Crown B lead to three points. With Rewind Rewired also winning 8-4 at Sabores, there will be a real bun fight to finish top.

The run-in is sure to be close as there are now several teams within striking distance of the promotion places.

Two of these are Bluebell B and Treehouse B,who faced each other, the latter being one place above in the table. The home team made the early running, though, as they moved into the lead. And try as they might, Treehouse could not gain a foothold.

The scoreline did not reflect the game, but Bluebell got the points to move above Treehouse B in the league, albeit by frame difference.

The end is nigh!

NOSTRODAMUS thought the world would end in the year 2000, but we are still here. And so is the Oasis Fm Darts League. A case of Nostrodart-mus?

Anyhow, with just two rounds of matches to complete, we are nearly at the “congratulations” stage in the battle for divisional honours.

Phoenix Flights will be crowned Division 2 champions if they secure three points from their home encounter tonight (Friday) with bottom side Waterfall B, despite missing the chance to nail it last week when they were held to a draw at Gaffers Jucee Girls.

A 6-2 win at Summerlands means that Spear Chuckers are guaranteed a top-three finish, while a single point will put Sandys Chippers in the same bracket,

despite a 5-3 defeat at Sundowners.

Naughty Nautas dodged another draw by losing the trebles and the match against Clouseaus, and Lofty hit his first 180 of the campaign as Marilyns put seven past the Playgirls.

Elsewhere, Picassos enjoyed a 6-2 success at Legends, while Waterfall B, at Bar Leone, notched up their second victory of the season.

A quick glance at the Division 1 table shows a similar situation in the battle for silverware at the summit. Leaders Phoenix Bar gave a strong showing as they beat Gaffers 6-2, despite a sixth maximum by Tom, and now need just three points to take the title.

Gaffers themselves will be certain of a topthree spot if they take at least two points from tonight’s opposition - none other than second-placed Boothen Army!

By Roscoe THE largest crowd of the season, 11,241, saw Tenerife huff and puff and nearly steal a win they didn’t deserve.

It’s fair to say that Tenerife have been poor for a few weeks, and this was another rubbish display. The snap they showed before Christmas is gone.

Why? Your guess is as good as mine. But something is missing at the moment.

They took the lead through Choco Lozano just after the half-hour point. It was the Honduran’s eighth goal of the season, and that is a fair return. However, he doesn’t quite seem on the ball to me right now. Like a lot of the side, he can do much better.

In a game of few chances, that goal looked like being enough for a long time. Huesca certainly looked brighter than when I saw them on the TV a few weeks ago.

They have brought in some experience and it showed. It was nice to see Mikel Arruabarrena again. He had an okay season here eight

years ago before finding his feet at Eibar, where he was a major part of

their Cinderella story.

In goal, Huesca had former Atletico Madrid

veteran Leo Franco, while former Arsenal wonderkid Fran Merida

was in midfield. They battled hard and it was no surprise when they equalised at the death through Inigo Lopez.

It was hard to take, but not undeserved.

The two dropped points nudged Tenerife down the table, and this weekend it’s a tricky trip to Real Oviedo.

They have had a sticky few weeks after drawing their last four matches.

But they are a settled experienced side who are in the top six on merit.

Regular watchers of second-tier football will know their squad inside-out, and Tenerife will be delighted to return with something.

By Adi Benson SOMETIMES, There comes a point in the season when everything can look cut and dried, but that’s certainly not the case in the Premier League right now. And it could all go down to the last week as clubs continue to jockey for position.

Sunderland v Man Utd Sunderland grabbed a point last weekend against Liverpool with a never-give-up attitude, scoring two late goals at Anfield. They need to avoid conceding goals, though, as they won’t always be able to do that. This will be a test at home but, if they can frustrate United, they may get something from this game.

United themselves will be disappointed after conceding a late equaliser against Chelsea, which leaves them six points adrift of fourth spot. They know they must win this one to hold on to Champions League ambitions.

But with Sunderland fighting relegation, it won’t be easy.

United feeling the pressure

about doing enough to keep away from the relegation battle, but they still need 12 points to pretty much ensure safety. In recent games, their home form has mostly been good, and they need to ensure that continues. A few new faces around the club has helped with confidence levels.

Stoke are on a poor run, and it is difficult to see where their next win is coming from as they look short on confidence. They were hoping for a possible European place this season, but have slipped into the bottom half of the table. It’s a slide they need to halt, and this game provides that chance.

Bournemouth v Stoke Bournemouth are just

Crystal Palace v Watford Palace have also slipped backwards after a promising start and, in recent games, have become reliant on their defenders getting goals. They have pace throughout the midfield and attack, but it seems that other managers and teams have worked out how to keep them quiet.

Watford, sitting nicely in mid-table, have no relegation worries which, I’m sure, they would have taken at the beginning of the season.

If results go their way, they could even move up a few more places this weekend and really give their fans something to cheer about.

WE are starting to get to the business end of the season in the Premier League, and we had another weekend of great results, with some unexpected ones.

With the results the way they are at the moment, it is making life difficult as an Oasis Fm Fantasy League manager, and every week is a guessing game as to where the points will come from.

Everton had a good away win at Stoke, which resulted in them providing three players in the point-scoring team of the week.

Leicester, with their

great win against Man City, were just behind with two players, and the remainder comprised players from Arsenal, Aston Villa, Southampton, Spurs, Liverpool and Swansea.

Player of the week was Leicester’s Robert Huth, with 16, which is a great return for a defender … his two goals certainly helped!

Everton v West Brom It’s frustrating being a football fan and, at Everton, the fans never know which team will turn up. One week they are brilliant, the next week average. Yet with consistency, they could have been challenging for the top four. They have some good young players, who are gaining great experience, and this is one they should win.

West Brom fans are starting to go against manager Tony Pulis, and what they are classing as boring football. And it is difficult to disagree with them. They have no bite in attack and continue to concede goals. And if the teams below them put any runs together, they could be dragged into the relegation fight.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-0 Norwich v West Ham Norwich have been too inconsistent this season, which is why they fallen into the relegation zone.

It is important to beat the teams around you, especially at this level, and last week’s defeat by Aston Villa highlighted that very thing. They are sloppy at the back and toothless in attack.

West Ham are back in form and deserve their sixth place in the table. They had a blip over the festive period - and without that they could have been topfour challengers. The

key for the Hammers will be hanging on to the players they have as bigger clubs start to have a sniff around, especially Payet.

Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A

Swansea v Southampton Swansea have produced a couple of results in recent matches, but they are still looking over their shoulders because they are just four points above the relegation zone. Key to their survival is their home games, and they must turn the Liberty Stadium into a fortress.

The new manager has helped with confidence, and they now need a good run of results.

Southampton have climbed the table steadily after a slow start. They have finally found form and have made themselves difficult to beat again, after boasting one of the League’s best defensive records last season. Ten points off the Champions League places is too much a gap to make up, though.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-1 Chelsea v Newcastle Try as they might, Chelsea just can’t seem to put a run together, and they were lucky to pick up a point with a late goal against United.

The teams above them continue to win, and they will struggle to make the top half of the table by the end of

the season. A season without European football for them could prove costly with their squad.

Newcastle have clawed their way out of the bottom three and will be keen not to slip down.

This is a tough one, but if they can get a result at Stamford Bridge, their confidence will be skyhigh. They will need an early goal, but that may end up being enough.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 2-0 Arsenal v Leicester Arsenal must be glad to get back to winning ways, scoring a couple of goals in the process after slipping backwards. It will hurt even more that Spurs have gone above them. This will be a tough clash for them despite their huge win at Leicester easrlier in the season - and they must make home advantage count.

Leaders Leicester, riding the crest of a confidence wave, believe they can beat anybody after whipping City at the Etihad last weekend to go five points clear. They attack with pace and I can see them causing Arsenal’s defence all sorts of problems.

Prediction: Draw Last season: 2-1

Aston Villa v Liverpool In recent seasons, Villa have been a bogey team for Liverpool and, after boosting their survival chances with a win last weekend, they must be hoping for more of

the same. They are still eight points away from safety, But when you pick three points up, you start to believe it is possible. It will all hinge on the teams around them, though.

Liverpool have been in reverse gear recently, and the way they conceded late goals to Sunderland shows a team with no belief.

They are still making costly defensive mistakes and they are struggling to score goals. Manager Klopp didn’t panic and spend money in January. but the summer will be a big test for the squad.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-2 Man City v Tottenham The big games keep coming in the League, and this is another one.

City were shell-shocked last week after being hammered by Leicester at home. Now they face another tough task, which could see them drift further off the title pace. Pellegrini will be expecting a big response from his players, so I expect them to go for the jugular straight from kick-off.

Spurs are sitting pretty in second spot and are good value for it.

They won’t want to lose ground, and this game will give us a good indication of their title credentials. Though still a young team, they play without fear, which will help them against City.

Prediction: Draw Last season: 4-1

Guessing game goes on Devaney’s Baines on Toast are managing to keep up with the teams around them and not lose any ground.

I mentioned last week that a few new teams were trying to enter the fray, but I seem to have put the kiss of death on two of them, Untouchables and Goldpack, because they moved backwards.

Jamie Palmer’s Spartans had a good week, though, moving him back up to fifth spot.

He will be looking for a

few more strong weeks to make further progress.

No boosts or triplescore captains came into play with regards to the team of the week as Kane The Goal, managed

by Paul Jones, led the way with 87 points.

Mezut Ozil earned him 10, Huth 16 and his captain, Roberto Firmino, scored a solid 26, giving him 52 points from just three players.

As for trying to pick a team for this week-

end’s fixtures, it might be time to start stick-

ing pins into a list of players!
