Is missing Matty here? Continued from front Matty Bermingham’s driving licence was posted back to the family by a Tenerife holiday-maker, who found it in a street. Big brother Graham, also of Huddersfield, said of the 21-year-old Yorkshire Regiment soldier: “We fear for his safety. He vanished last Tuesday (9th Feb), and we are desperately worried.” “The messages I exchanged with him last week got more and more odd, and he said he had left the camp where he was based and intended to disappear. “He always wanted to join the Army, but he has said on his trips home that he wasn’t looking forward to going back.”
The family’s last contact with him came in a series of worrying text messages in which he said “Sorry”, adding that he did not want to bring shame on his family. Matty, who’d had a series of jobs before enlisting, had completed his six-month basic training. But 25-yearold Graham said there had been one or two issues of bullying during that period, which had been tackled. The youngster was then posted to the Yorkshire Regiment and joined Corunna Company, at its Warminster base. Graham added: “It seems so odd. He had just got into the regiment football team and was due to fly out
to California for some games, including one with LA Galaxy. He then had a trip to Las Vegas planned. “We have had messages from a guy who has been in Tenerife, and from a guy who works in a bar there, that they may have seen Matty. “Someone else has offered to print flyers with his picture and put them up in bars around the Island. We just want any information to tell us he is okay. It is so worrying.” An Army spokesman said: “He was listed as Absent Without Leave, but after eight days it was referred to the Ministry of Defence Police. They have alerted all police forces and authorities.” Graham added: “Our
mum, Diane, is distraught and we are desperately worried about what has happened. We fear he has come to some harm. “He’s a typical lad who enjoyed himself at home, but a few times on leave he said he wasn’t looking forward to returning to Warminster. “We just want to know where he is, and I’m trying to get time off work to fly to Tenerife with a relative to see what we can find out. “The family really need to hear that he’s okay, or at least for someone to let them know they’ve seen him.” The Shoeboxes for Our Heroes charity has backed social media appeals to find Matty, and a spokesman said: “One of our lads is missing and his family are very concerned.” The search for Matty in Tenerife has reminded authorities of another couple of young men who are missing. The Lucie Blackman Trust assists Brits in crisis when overseas. Set up after the brutal murder of Lucie in Japan in 1990, the Trust provides families with information, liaison, advice and support throughout a missing person’s case. It has a comprehensive website, which lists details on a plethora of missing people. Currently, the Trust is assisting in the search for Martin Cummings, a 21-year-old last seen at around 6.30pm on Tuesday, 24th November 2015. Martin’s last-known location was around
the La Tejita beach area, and he has not been seen since that night. His Renault Scenic car was left at a roundabout near the beach, where many vehicles are parked by residents and beachgoers. Martin is 6ft 5in tall and weighs 90kg. He has short, dark blonde hair and brown eyes. He was thought to have been wearing a blue hooded jacket, black shorts and possibly flip-flops. Martin’s family, naturally, are exceptionally worried about him. Also missing is Matthew Jackson, who has
not been seen since around 2am on 18th December 2009. Matt, then 21, was on holiday with his girlfriend, staying at the Pearly Grey Ocean Club hotel in Callao Salvaje. He was wearing a red-and-white Lacoste T-shirt, (as seen in the photo), grey/beige brown threequarterlength trousers and yellow flip-flops. If you have any information about any of the missing men, you can call +44800 098 8485in confidence. Alternatively, you can email any information to ops@lbtrust.org

Spain’s GDP joy THE Spanish Government debt ratio to GDP fell at the close of 2015 for the first time since the start of the financial crisis in 2008. And that’s a huge achievement.
In fact, the debt ratio virtually tripled during those years, but figures published on Wednesday by the Bank of Spain showed that the percentage is estimated at around 99% of Gross Domestic Product. It is based on early figures of the national accounts, published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). If it is confirmed when the final figures are released, it will mean a 0.3% drop on the close of 2014. And, set against the target notified to Brussels last October (99.7%), this final result for 2015 would be lower. The total volume of Government debt stands at 1,069.88bn euros, which is 3.5% higher than at the close of 2014, with a downward trend in its rate of growth. Compared with 7% growth at the end of 2014, the growth rate during 2015 was on the decline. And, according to the breakdown by public authority, the State increased its outstanding debt in 2015 by 46.72bn euros, half the previous year’s total. This is a big feather in the cap for interim Prime Minister Mariano
Rajoy and he will surely use this as a big election point should there be another vote. Meanwhile, the regional governments increased their debt by 23.81bn euros, slightly higher than the 2014 total. But local authorities reduced their debt levels in 2015 by 3.08bn euros to stand at 35.25bn. The debt ratio to GDP shows that the increase in the Government debt ratio changed direction for the first time since the start of the recession, which continued until 2013. The increase responds to the rise in public debt, the funds allocated to financing regional governments (Regional Liquidity Fund and Supplier Payment Fund), the restructuring of the
financial sector and the Spanish contribution to the European aid programme for partner countries. This trend changed in 2015 through, above all, the reduction in the public deficit and improved debt-financing conditions. Spain’s public finances have been under scrutiny since the property bubble burst in 2008, putting millions out of work. It almost tripled public debt as a percentage of economic output and sent the budget deficit soaring to more than 10% GDP. Investor concern over the country’s high public deficit - one of the highest in Europe came to a head in 2012 when bond yields rose to unsustainable lev-
els, pushing Spain close to needing a sovereign bail-out. A pledge by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi at the time to do “whatever it takes” to protect the euro pulled Spain back from the brink and economic growth returned again mid-2013. The economy is expected to expand around 3% this year. However, the European Commission has told Madrid the next Spanish Government must reduce its deficit this year in line with European Union rules. Those rules call for a debt-toGDP ratio of 60% and a 3% GDP deficit or less . The Government’s debt-to-GDP targets are 98.5% for this year, 96.5% for 2017 and 93.2% for 2018.
World’s biggest bank said to be ‘laundering money’ POLICE who raided Madrid’s Industrial and Commercial Bank of China offices arrested five employees suspected of money-laundering across Europe.
It is acknowledged as the world’s biggest bank, and of those detained was the Director of the bank in Spain, said to have known about the investiga-
tion. European police officials said Beijingbased ICBC (IDCBY) was suspected of laundering money on behalf of a Chinese criminal enterprise. Allegedly, it imported a huge total of goods without proper customs declarations, to avoid Spanish taxes. The bank is also believed to have provided services to other Chinese and Spanish criminal syndicates “to introduce into the financial system, funds earned through the
crimes of smuggling, tax and excise fraud and labour exploitation”. This, alleged European law enforcement agency Europol in a statement, “Allowed the transfer of the funds to China in a way that appeared legal”. The probe into suspected money-laundering of at least 44 million euros also identified other links leading to France, Germany and Lithuania, said Europol, which gave no further details.
State-owned ICBC, which launched its Spanish operations in 2011, is the biggest bank globally, with about $3 trillion in total assets. The Chinese Embassy in Madrid said in a statement that Chinese institutions operating in Spain abide by, and comply with, local and Chinese laws. There has been no comment from ICBC, but the Embassy added that it was following developments closely.
A tax windfall for the larger family FAMILIES with five or more members in Adeje will now be able to claim reduced property taxes of between 40-90%.
Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said the measure, approved at Council level, and would go towards helping them. “Our borough is constantly advancing, and we are working in different areas to improve the lives for the betterment of society”, he added. Those eligible have until 29th February to do so in the local tax (Hacienda office) or at the Town Hall’s Citizens Advice office. The reductions will be applicable for those living in the family home, in which the owner and parent of the family is the taxable person. He or she must be on the Adeje residents’ register, along with the rest of the family. All local taxes on the home must also be up-to-date. The percentage granted will depend on the rateable valuation (“valor catastral” in your property papers) in 2016. “Zones valued high-
er than 120,000 euros (the rateable valuation) won’t be included in this rate reduction,” said Councillor Epifanio Díaz Hernández, responsible for local taxes. “But overall, there has been a 23% reduction on all valuations, so more people will be able to benefit.” The person making the application must not own more than two houses in the borough in his/her name. The rateable valuations must be individual, and rates should be paid by through bank transfers. Homes with a rateable valuation of up to 50,000 euros will be in line for an 80% reduction, or 90% if they are classed in a “special category”; those valued between 50,001-80,000 euros can apply for a 60% reduction (70% if “special category”) and homes with a rateable valuation of between 80,001 and 120,000 euros will be 40% and 50%, respectively. There are also different groups of “familias numerosas”. For instance, a single parent with two children should qualify, so check with the local tax office.
Arona First for homeless ARONA’S Board of Social Services has designed a programme for the homeless in which among other projects, will see the launch of its Housing First initiative.
The strategy is based on a successful version in America and several European countries, including mainland Spain, which provides rental housing to the homeless. Housing Councillor Elena Cabello unveiled the plan with Aurelio Abreu, Cabildo Vice President and Housing Minister; Social Services Minister Cristina Valido; Equality and Heritage Minister Josefa Mesa and Arona Mayor Jose Mena. Housing First strategy is initially aimed at 15
homeless people, with mental health conditions, disabilities or addictions, who decide, voluntarily, decide to participate in this project. The cost, estimated at 150,000 euros, is the same as that of a group home, but less than a hostel. And experiments around the world show that is most effective in the short and long-term. The initiative will give the person access to rental housing without time, limited room where the tenant pays the lease of housing, and not more than onethird of his/her income. And it’s all accompanied by basic services and social support. The housing would be scattered at different points to promote social integration and avoid ghettos.

ADEJE Council´s Economic Development Department, under Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín, will spend over 1½m euros on jobcreation schemes this year.
They are aimed, especially, at groups in the social-exclusion risk category, and Cllr Méndez Martín said: “Adeje’s unemployment rate is low, currently at 7%, but we are continuing to work to reduce it even further. “We know there are problems, but where there are individuals who, for a variety of reasons, find themselves outside the system and who, for instance, need training or education to help them enter the labour market, we want to help.” Those looking for information on the programmes can contact Costa Adeje Tourism Development Centre (CTDCA), on MondayFriday, from 9am to 2pm. In some cases an appointment is recommended, which can be booked by phoning 922 050 150.
1.5m-euro Adeje boost for jobless
During the year, various projects will be developed, some co-funded with the Canarian Employment Service, and others funded solely by the Council.
Included is a youth scheme for up to 15 youngsters, aged 16-25, who have no qualifications and will be trained to professional-certificate level in basic res-
Clavijo fighting a fishy demand
CANARIAN President Fernando Clavijo is opposing the Spanish Government by warning that local quotas on tuna fishing must be increased.
He pointed a finger at the Government, saying: “Negotiations are needed to increase the quota of bluefin tuna for the islands - or else I will take the case to the European Union.” Clavijo believes the “limiting of catches in the archipelago clearly violates the spirit of the common fisheries policy”.
He said the Canary Islands Government would seek a legal review of the Royal Decree that limits the fish which can be caught. He added: “The levels imposed by Madrid are not successful and we will take the case to Europe. We will open a new dialogue, but, if there is no progress, we will not hesitate to denounce them.” The President held a meeting this week with Fuerteventura Cabildo chief Marcial Morales, General Director of Fisheries, Orlando Umpiérrez and Fuerteventura fishing union reps. They analysed the implications for Canar-
ian fleets if the quotas are not changed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Morales expressed concern about the sector’s uncertainty and supported the actions, together with the industry, saying: “The Royal Decree is clearly unfair.” The Spanish Government wants a quota rise of 40 tonnes of bluefin tuna attributed to the Archipelago, but Clavijo considers the figure “totally inadequate”. He added: “This increase for the whole Canary fishing fleet is the same amount allowed by a single boat, fishing in the waters of the Peninsula.”

cational or professional qualifications. It will offer training and some on-the-job experience with Adeje borough’s cleaning company, Ascan-Torrabonaf. The +Bell Imagen y Belleza experimental programme, already up and running, has helped train 60 individuals, with 15 people about to earn their professional, beauty-training certificates. Other courses are being designed to prioritise those currently unemployed by offering them training in a range of jobs, with job-placement training included. Adeje Council is also offering a professionalorientation programme for those planning to be self-employed, which will help up to 400 people. Finally, the Council is also working with socially-funded projects in conjunction with NGOs (Non Governmental Organisations), such as the Red Cross and Mcapaz, to help up to 120 individuals identified as being at risk of social exclusion. These include young people who have never worked, over-45s, and those who have been jobless for many years.

Emergency services to be open all hours JESUS Morera, the Canaries’ Ministry of Health, is planning to open 24-hour emergency services in 33 health centres throughout the islands.
This is one of the measures to be included in the emergency health plan, announced to decongest hospital emergencies and, comprehensively, improve emergency services and emergency departments at all levels of health care. But this emergency plan, still in draft form, will not be completed until June. Of the 33 out-patient centres in which the emergency services will have 24-hour availability, 15 are on Gran Canaria, 14 in Tenerife, two in Lanzarote and one apiece in Fuerteventura in La Palma. Morera also announced improvements
to the ambulances service, which will have eight new centres, outside hospitals. But the workers and organisation will stem from the hospitals, of which there are two in operation already in Tenerife. One is in Candelaria, and the second will be moved to the new South Hospital, near Chayofa. Eight new, specialised, urgent-care centres will also be opened in various areas: two in Tenerife, four in Gran Canaria and one each in Fuerteventura, and La Palma. The emergency health plan draft also includes improvements to emergency departments of the University Hospital of the Canary Islands and the Candelaria Hospital. The “architectural restructuring” of the emergency in the Insular Hospital and the provision of x-ray and simple biochemistry equipment at some of the primary care centres.
Santa Cruz leading way in hotel trade THE number of tourists staying in Santa Cruz hotels last year totalled 215,283 - 40% higher than in 2011. Santa Cruz leads the Island’s growth in this sector, and the Cabildo’s annual report makes interesting reading. Tourism figures are at a record high, but it seems that Tenerife, as a whole, is enjoying
the boom and not just one region. For example, here in the South there has been a slight reduction in hotel stays since 2011. The tourist numbers have dropped almost 2%, while the North has grown 5%. And the La Laguna-Bajamar-La Punta triangle has actually increased its visitor total by 15%.

Illegal taxi turmoil ONE of the main problems concerning Tenerife’s taxi industry is the ever-increasing presence of “pirate” cabs, which is rampant at the two airports, and, increasingly, at the Island’s ports.
In recent years, authorities have tried to improve surveillance to stamp out this illegal practice. But it simply hasn’t worked. So the local government has now agreed to increase the police presence in these areas. The “taxi cops” will feature in airports and ports, with the power to issue on-the-spot fines and penalties. This has already been approved by the Canarian Government. And, once the specific training for cops is complete, the police reinforcements will become operational in time for Easter. Transport Minister Elias Castro said: “Although the sanctioning competence will be transferred to local councils, the aim is that at peak times, a major influx of police will be present in the Los Cristinanos
and Santa Cruz ports, as well as our two airports, and this will be managed by the insular government.” He added that these “special agents” will be allied to the work carried out by the Cabildo’s Transport Inspectors, the Guardia Civil and Local Police in the respective municipalities where these facilities are located. “In this way, they can give greater assurance and safety,” said the Transport Minister. The Canaries’ seven chiefs met to discuss the taxi turmoil a fortnight ago. And as well these illegal practices,
they also discussed the problems of mobility taxis, and the subject
of carrying passengers from outside the municipality.
An upgrade for new ring road? THE southern section of Tenerife’s ring road has only just been finished, but already there are calls for an upgrade.
Some municipalities have complained that the new road should have two lanes in each direction on the route between Adeje and Santiago del Teide.
Now, the Canarian Government is studying the impact a second lane to Guia de Isora southbound would create, many believed that this will improve the flow of traffic and to facilitate overtaking. Since its opening, the Ministry of Public Works has commissioned reports to improve the project. The main problem, as always, is the expense. Incorporating a fourth
lane would be of considerable cost, especially taking into consideration the viaducts which would be affected. Some 14km of this road, particularly between Santiago del Teide and the Guia de Isora access, has one lane only in the direction of Adeje, where the signs prohibit overtaking. From Guia de Isora, each of the directions has two lanes, and there
is a big difference in traffic build-ups. The Guia de Isora municipality and it’s Mayor, Pedro Martin, said: “Although the Canary Islands Government opposed it at first, they finally agreed, to carry out the expropriation of the fourth lane. “Now, we have returned to asking the Ministry to accept the study, and we hope to have an answer in the coming months.”

Police put the bite on a ‘tax-fraud’ dental chief POLICE have seized a plane and 36 luxury vehicles in the Topolino operation against the Vitaldent Clinics’ scandal, which has resulted in 13 people being held on tax-fraud allegations.
The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Sources have discovered that Ernesto Colman, who owns the Spanish dental clinics, was laundering money from franchisees and
patients in Switzerland and Luxembourg, who paid monthly in cash and were not declared to the tax authorities. Part of this capital returned to Spain to be invested in more than 100 buildings, agricultural land and vehicles. The operation was ordered by the Prosecutor against Corruption and Organised Crime, which has authorised entries and records in various offices of Vitaldent by agents of the Unit for Economic Crime and Tax. The Vitaldent chain
began operating in1991 in Madrid. It pioneered a franchise model and has since added 450 centres, mostly in Spain. Since its inception, the clinics have treated more than seven million patients and employs 7,500 people. The latest public economic data of the company, via a press release last April, pointed to a 6.1% increase in sales in the first quarter of 2015, amounting to 115.4m euros, compared with the same 2014 period. In the same statement, they indicated
that the chain was “Europe’s largest dental company” with 438 clinics, of which 174 are owned and the rest under the franchise model. On their website, the total number of clinics rose to 450. In Spain, where it has 354 clinics, Vitaldent aimed an increase in sales of 4.5% to 91 million. The latest accounts for the year 2014, filed with the commercial register by Vitaldent under the name Mev. Dental efficiency, showed losses of 2.7m euros.
Coughs and sneezes… IT’S my fault really. I don’t believe in fate, but boy, do I tempt it sometimes!
It was just a throwaway comment in the middle of last week that did the damage. “I cannot believe that it’s the middle of winter and I still haven’t had a bug yet.” Famous last words. A few days later and I was sweating like Donald Trump in a Mexican restaurant. I was so bad that even the mosquito in my bedroom didn’t fancy some of my blood. You know you are ill when a mozzie turns down a free lunch. Somehow, I got through a breakfast show and, as the week continued, it morphed from throat to sinuses, to chest. And then back up again. It’s only today, Thursday, that I’m starting to feel a bit more human.
I’m not alone. This bug has swept through the community and shows no sign of disappearing. Over here, the bugs seem to linger longer as well. In the UK, a 24hour bug or weekend flu is exactly that. Here, they stay longer than the in-laws. The medicine seems the same, or in some cases, more powerful. So why is it always so hard to shake? It’s not as though we are not sweating it out. I reckon I have, singlehandedly, sucked the world’s supply of Strepsils, used more Andrex than a puppy and popped more pills than OJ Simpson. Talking of him, did you see that drama based on his infamous 1995 trial? I urge you to watch it this Monday night. It’s like the producers of Crossroads got hold of it! It’s the funniest thing I have watched all year. And you know what they say laughter is…
Snow needed to help ease the water crisis OUR dry winter is starting to cause some real problems. And the big concern is that it will not be a oneoff event.
This week, the Canary Islands Government began a testing phase for new desalination plants in Guia de Isora and Granadilla, which has been welcomed widely, especially by the agri-

cultural and livestock sector. The two hydraulic infrastructures in the South will supply the region’s coastal communities, and Hernan Tejera, general secretary of the Association of Farmers and Ranchers of Canarias (ASAGA), is delighted. “The desalination plants are good news because they free up resources for the agricultural and livestock sector,” he said. It’s a vital
boost, especially after the dry year.” However, water from the plants will also be used by the general populations of Arona, Cabo Blanco, San Miguel, Las Zocas and Charco del Pino, among others. At the moment, ASAGA’s members use a Las Galletas desalination plant exclusively for agriculture, while Arona and the eastern districts are supplied with treated water from Santa Cruz.
But this will stop, and that supply will be used for the banana plantations, although the dry spell is still a main concern. “The lack of rain and unusually high temperatures at this time are causing increased consumption of water for crops,” said Hernán Tejera. “You must remember that the water here comes from rain and snow. And we have had none!”

It’s been roasting! THE first month of 2016, which set sky-high global temperatures, ranks as the hottest since records began, in 1880.
Toddler’s beach horror A TODDLER of just 20 months, swept by a giant wave to almost certain death in the sea at Navia, on Spain’s northern coast, had been walking on the beach with his father and grandfather. The child was in his grandfather’s arms when the wave struck last week, according to local newspaper El Comercio. All three were forced into the sea, and, when the adults managed to pull themselves out there was no sign of the little boy. “The father went into the water at least twice to try to find the child, but it was impossible,” said Maria Fernández, a Navia Town Hall councillor who witnessed the incident. “Conditions on the beach were terrible.” Much of the coast was on high alert last week for unusually big waves and storms, with nine-metre-high waves forecast for areas along Spain’s northern coast. Witnesses raised the alarm, with police and coastguards soon on the scene, and helicopters scoured the area until midnight. The search operation restarted on Tuesday, with three helicopters and coastguard vessel Concepción Arenal combing the area. Police and fire department
teams were also searching the coastline. “He escaped from their hands in a tragic accident,” said Navia Mayor Ignacio García Palacios. Members of Spain’s Guardia Civil, along with the baby’s grandfather, told the child’s mother of the incident two hours later, and all three family members received hospital treatment for shock. Councillor Maria Fernández said that some of the toddler’s clothes had washed up on the beach on Monday evening. It made the search even more difficult because emergency services could not look out for the colour of his clothes. Meanwhile, in Huelva, south-west Spain, a three-year-old youngster was, tragically, battered to death by building materials swept up in the extreme wind, and several adults were injured. Back on the northern coast, a 73-year-old fisherman from Cantabria disappeared at sea, and a Galician windsurfer, aged 47, was blown on to the roof of a nearby cottage, sustaining a broken leg and a head injury. The Malaga area of southern Spain continues to be on yellow alert, with strong winds anticipated throughout the week.
The Revenant film brings house down
PARTS of a cinema roof collapsed on Sunday at a Valladolid shopping mall cinema, injuring six people. A woman and child were treated at the building, while the remaining four were taken to hospital, said the local emergency services. In a Twitter mes-
sage, alongside a photo of a firefighter surveying debris on the cinema’s floor of the cinema, local police said that none of the injuries appeared serious. There were 42 people watching Baftawinning The Revenant when parts of the roof came down.
A NASA report shows that January’s heat topped all, and by some margin. “This is the warmest we have seen, with the temperature some 1.13° Celsius above normal,” it recorded. It was the fourth consecutive month in which the world was more than one degree above average, as determined by the US space agency’s data. And Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) this week highlighted the January record, and
a statistic which is of more concern. The average surface temperature of the Earth between 1981 and 2010 was over halfa-degree Celsius hotter than at any other period in time. This covers not only land but sea measurements as well. The JMA notes that the weather phenomenon El Niño could be the cause of “this January phenomenon”. January was also the warmest since records
began in Spain, confirmed Ana Casals, spokesperson for the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). The entire country has seen well above average temperatures and, for the nation as the whole, it was a mind-blowing 2.3º Celsius above normal. In Spain, the normal average temperature in the 1981-2010 period at this time was 7.2º C, but this January it soared to 9.5º.
Paradoxically, the month was also “very wet” as a whole in Spain, with 41% more rainfall than usual. In particular, said Casals, Spain’s January was the warmest in 55 years, surpassing the average temperature of January 1966 - the warmest until now at 0.2º above the norm. The highest temperature in Spain was recorded here in Tenerife at an amazing 30º - only the second time this Millennium that January has hit that mark on 15th January at Tenerife South airport. Thus, it comes as no surprise to locals that January 2016 was the warmest opening month of the year ever in Tenerife.
Government plan to ease the jobless rate THE Spanish Government has implemented a new plan, with a view to reducing the unemployment rate. The Official State Bulletin (BOE) shows that the initiative , for up to six months, will be in place by the start of summer. This new programme is aimed at retraining and improving the employability of the long-term jobless, or those with dependents claiming unemployment benefit. Beneficiaries must
show they have actively sought a job, or have taken part in actions to improve their employability for a month before getting the extra help. The Royal Decree regulates this plan, which can give those searching for jobs as much as an extra 400 euros a month, which will be implemented automatically when the unemployment rate exceeds 20%. The last Labour Force Survey, for the fourth
quarter of 2015 (EPA), placed the unemployment rate in Spain at 20.90%. The Plan states that the unemployed can apply once only - and for a maximum six-month period. Just popping out, - for a few years! A SPANISH civil servant, who bunked off work for “at least six years”, was rumbled after becoming eligible for a long-service award. Joaquin Garcia, whose job was supervising the building of a wastewater treatment plant, was fined 27,000 euros (£21,000) after the award brought his long absence to light. He has since retired. The 69-year-old denies the allegation, and his lawyer says he has gone into hiding after suffering a media “lynching”. Mr Garcia said he had
been a victim of political bullying in the job and moved to a post where there was no work to do. He was paid 37,000 euros a year before tax by a water company run by local authorities in the south-western city of Cadiz. A court found in the authority’s favour and ordered him to pay the fine, which was equivalent to one year’s salary after tax and was the most that the company could legally reclaim. He has written to the Mayor, asking him to rescind the fine, and will ask for a review of the judgement.
Spanish newspapers have dubbed him “el funcionario fantasma”, which means the phantom official. The court heard that the boss of the water company had not seen Mr Garcia for years, despite occupying an office opposite his. The water company thought he was supervised by the local authorities, and vice-versa. The Deputy Mayor noticed his absence when Mr Garcia became eligible to receive a plaque for 20 years’ service. Mr Garcia says he was
bullied because of his family’s politics, and was sent to the water company to be out of the way. He found there was no work to do there. People close to him told Spanish newspaper El Mundo that he was reluctant to report it because he was providing for his family, and was worried that, at his age, he would not get another job. They said he did go to the office, although not for the full, daily business hours, and that he dedicated himself to reading philosophy.

Nadal flag-bearer? RAFAEL Nadal, one of the greatest tennis players of all, should carry the Spanish flag during the Opening Ceremony of this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
That’s the view of Spain’s Olympic Committee President Alejandro Blanco-

Mallorcan-born Rafa, 29, won a gold medal in the 2008 Olympic singles, but was forced to withdraw from the London Games through ill-health, when he was set to be Spain’s flag-bearer. Since turning pro in 2001, the Spaniard has won 14 Grand Slam singles titles.

UK old folk pay price for their deadly diets BRITISH pensioners, along with those in The Netherlands and Scandinavia, are said to die earlier than their European counterparts … and it’s all down to what they eat, or don’t eat!
The old folk in northern Spain, north-eastern Italy, Andorra and southern and western France are expected to live to a ripe old age, as are those in Geneva, Switzerland, thanks mainly to their Mediterranean diet. A new study, published in the British Medical Journal’s Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, compared how long the elderly lived across 18 countries in Europe over two decades. Over the 10 years up to 2011, the elderly’s survival rates in the European countries had significantly increased, to 34% among men, and to 47%
among women. The percentage of men who were 75-84 in 2001 survived to the ages of 85-94 a decade later. And women in Northern Spain, southern and Western France and north-eastern Italy survived longer than those in Britain or The Netherlands. Specifically, researchers studied the average number of people aged 75-84 in 1991, who survived to age 85-94 in 2001. They found the proportion of male survivors was 27% and the comparable figure for females was 40%. Then they looked at how many men and women aged 75-84 in 2001 survived to the ages of 85-94 in 2011. Researchers found the figures had increased significantly, to 34% among men, and to 47% among women. Poverty, high-fat diets, smoking, drinking and unhealthy lifestyle all take their toll in pushing pensioners to an early grave, said the researchers.
An increase in old-age survival contributes to overall life expectancy, and is particularly important, given the rise of ageing populations in high-income countries. Greece, Cyprus, Germany, the Republic of Ireland and recent eastern European countries were excluded because of insufficient data on their elderly populations. But Norway, Switzerland, Andorra, Lichtenstein and San Marino were included because they border European Union countries. The study revealed wide variations in old-age survival across Europe, with
British pensioners dying earlier than their European counterparts. The researchers said the UK, in particular, does not fare particularly well, because large proportions of the population are living in areas of low, oldage survival. In 2011, 18% of the female population and almost 7% of the male population were living in these areas. Comparably, those in post-industrial areas of Britain, southern Spain, France, Amsterdam and The Netherlands had low, old-age survival rates, as did the cities of Copenhagen in
Denmark and Naples in Italy. Dr Ana Isabel Ribeiro, of the University of Porto, said: “Oldage survival is strongly determined by mortality after 85 years of age, which is mainly caused by cardiovascular disease (CVD), which accounts for 42% of the deaths in Europe. “Indeed, the current pattern of CVD mortality to some extent matches our pattern of survival lower rates are found in northern Spain and all over France. “Individual risk factors such as smoking, blood pressure, diet, physical activity, alcohol intake and socio-economic sta-
tus are established risk factors for CVD at the individual level.” The doctor added: “Post-industrial regions such as West Central Scotland, the FranceBelgium border or Merseyside have been characterised by high poverty levels and an erosion of social cohesion. “Poverty also explains the low rates of longevity found in areas like Portugal, southern Spain, southern Italy and post-industrial areas. And unhealthy lifestyles explain the presence of areas of low survival in affluent areas of Scandinavia or the Netherlands.”
Cops keep abreast of drug-smugglers MORE than £500m street value of the drug methamphetamine, most of it hidden in the gel inserts of bras, has been seized by Sydney police. Authorities said a total of 720 litres (160 gallons) of the liquid was sent from Hong Kong,
and that a Chinese man and three Hong Kong nationals are facing life sentences. Justice Minister Michael Keenan, who said it was among the largest drug-busts in Australian history, added that crime gangs had sought to profit from Australia’s
“lucrative ice market”. Minister Keenan added: “Some 3.6 million individual hits of ice (methamphetamine)were taken off our streets.” Australian Federal Police chief Chris Sheehan said the liquid seized in Sydney could have
made 500kg (1,100lbs) of high-grade crystal meth. Commander Sheehan said the AFP worked closely with Chinese authorities as part of Taskforce Blaze, which cracks down on international methamphetamine-trafficking syndicates.

MIRACLE CANCER CURE? THE medical world is expressing great excitement about a new therapy that retrains the body’s immune system to fight cancer, especially after more than 90% of terminally-ill patients, reportedly, went into remission.
White blood cells, taken from patients with leukaemia, were modified in the laboratory and then returned. But there is one hiccup because the data has not been published or reviewed, and two patients are said to have died from an extreme immune response. And one expert said that though the trial was exciting, it was still just “a baby step”. The news filtered out of the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual meeting in Washington DC. Lead scientist Prof Stanley Riddell, from
the Fred Hutchinson Cancer research Centre in Seattle, said all other treatments had failed in these patients, and that they had been given only two-to-five months to live. He told the conference: “The early data is unprecedented.” In the trial, cells from the immune system, called “killer t-cells”, were taken out of dozens of patients. The cells normally act like bombs destroying infected tissue. The t-cells were genetically-modified by the researchers to engineer a new targeting mechanism - technical name, chimeric antigen receptors - to target acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Prof Riddell told the BBC: “Essentially, what this process does is it genetically repro-
grammes the t-cell to seek out, recognise and destroy the patient’s tumour cells. “The patients were really at the end of the line in terms of treatment options, and yet a single dose of this therapy put more than 90% of these patients in complete remission, where we can’t detect any of these leukaemia cells.” But one cancer expert said they still felt in the dark on the full significance of the study because the data was not available. Also, seven patients developed cytokine release syndrome so severe that they required intensive care, and a further two patients died. He added that while those odds might be acceptable if facing ter-
minal cancer, the sideeffects are much greater than conventional leukaemia treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which work in the majority of patients. There is also a big difference between using such approaches on a blood cancer like leukaemia and “solid” tumours such as breast cancer. Dr Alan Worsley, from Cancer Research UK, said that while the field was incredibly exciting, “this is a baby step”. He told the BBC: “We’ve been working for a while using this type of technology, geneticallyengineering cells. So far, it’s really shown some promise in this type of blood cancer. “We should say that in most cases, standard treatment for blood cancer is quite effective, so this is for those rare patients where that hasn’t worked.” He added: “The real challenge now is how do we get this to work for other cancers? How do we get it to work for what’s known as solid cancers - cancers in the tissue?”
Illegals simply aren’t making a splash now THE number of immigrants arriving in small boats to the Canary Islands in 2015 was three times as many as the previous year’s tally, which wasn’t much in real terms.
In fact, figures given by the European Border Agency (Frontex) for last year showed that the 874 immigrants reaching the Canaries from places such as Morocco and Mauritania - in small boats or canoes - totalled more than the 695 during the previous three years combined: 170 in 2012, 250
in 2013 and 275 in 2014. Frontex, in its latest annual report on the situation of migration in Europe, pointed out that these figures were nowhere near the numbers arriving in the Canaries 10 years ago. That influx occurred when we were the EU’s main entry point for illegal immigrants by sea, with almost 32,000 people arriving in 2006. Therefore, said the report, the “figures for illegal immigration by boats in the Canary Islands are irrelevant”. And Frontex considers that the bulk of the boat traffic, between the coast of Morocco and the Sahara, and the Canary Islands, is not organised by mafias, but by specific individuals.

Taylor is so swift to set Grammy record
TAYLOR Swift’s 1989 has won the coveted Album of the Year award at this year’s Grammys in Los Angeles - the first woman to win the award twice.
The American singer also won best Pop Vocal album and best music video for her Bad Blood track. But rapper Kendrick Lamar won the most prizes at Monday’s star-studded ceremony with five awards. British singer Ed Sheeran also won his first two Grammys, lifting Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for his No.1 hit Thinking Out Loud. A surprised Sheeran beat Lamar, Swift, country group Little Big Town and Wiz Khalifa to the Song of the Year accolade. As he collected the award, he said: “We wrote the song on a couch in my house. “Thanks to my parents, who’ve flown to the Grammys every year for the last four years. And every time I lose I say, ‘Maybe next year’.” He added: “If you’d told my 11-year-old self I would receive an award from Stevie Wonder, I’d be chuffed.” Swift was equally surprised at winning the top honour. Her album, released in 2014, came out too late to be eligible for last year’s awards, but was finally recognised at this year’s ceremony. She gave a powerful acceptance speech saying: “As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys
twice, I want to say to young women, ‘There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success, or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. “‘But if you focus on your work and don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday, when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know it was you and the people that love you that put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world’.” Lamar’s wins included Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly; Best Rap Song and Rap Performance for Alright; Best Rap/Sung collaboration and Best Music Video, which he shared with Swift for Bad Blood. Alabama Shakes were triple winners, collecting Best Alternative Music Album, and their Don’t Wanna Fight winning Best Rock Song and Rock Performance. Canadian singer The Weeknd also picked up two Grammys, for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best R&B Performance. Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars won two awards for their Uptown Funk hit, including Record of the Year, while Meghan Trainor was named Best New Artist. British rock band Muse also won Best Rock Album for Drones, and evergreen Tony Bennett collected his 18th Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal album. Justin Bieber also won his first Grammy for his collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo, winning Best Dance
Recording for Where Are U Now. Lamar performed The Blacker The Berry, walking on stage as part of a chain gang, before transitioning to Alright, in front of a huge bonfire and African tribal dancers Outside the main categories, Amy - Asif Kapadia’s documentary on the life of Amy Winehouse - won the Grammy for Best Music Film. Swift opened the ceremony with a rendition of her Out of the Woods song, and was one of many who performed during the show, along with Lamar, Adele, Ellie Goulding, James Bay and The Weeknd. Adele’s performance was slightly hampered, however, by audio problems which appeared to throw the singer. She later tweeted: “The piano mics fell on to the piano strings that’s what the guitar sound was. It made it sound out of tune.” Rihanna, also booked to perform, pulled out at the last minute on doctor’s orders because she had bronchitis. There were also a number of acts offering tribute performances: Lady Gaga sang a medley of David Bowie songs, Jackson Browne and The Eagles performed in honour of Glenn Frey, while Stevie Wonder remembered Earth Wind and Fire’s Maurice White. Hollywood Vampires, a supergroup comprising stars including Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp and Joe Perry, also performed a tribute to Motorhead’s Lemmy.

Safe Investment – Smooth Returns
January 2016 has been the worst opening for stock markets in the last decade. The world stock markets have taken a huge drop in value since the start of 2016. The falls have been in the region of 15-20% depending on where the investment has been allocated. The UK, Europe, and the USA are showing losses of around 1215%, and the emerging markets of Russia, Brazil, and China are down by 20% plus. This again has shown how volatile and fickle world stock markets can be and how quickly shares and equities can fall in value. Investors have to ask if they want to expose themselves to this risk or do they want a safe investment with a steady smooth return. Take a look at the graph on the Prudential Protected Cautious fund that has produced smooth returns of 6 to
7% over the last four years. It has also provided a Capital Guarantee on client’s initial investment and ask yourself which you would prefer – • Stock market fluctu-
ations • Risk of losing your capital • Sleepless nights OR • A Capital Guarantee on your money
• A steady return of 6-7% per annum • Access to your capital at any time • Option to take regular income payments • Spanish tax compliant investment
If you want SECURITY If you want LIQUIDITY If you want RETURNS Then call us to discuss this investment to see if it is suitable for your needs with no obligation whatso-
ever. To all of our clients in the Canaries who already have this investment and have had a great return in 2015; here’s looking forward to 2016 to providing more of the same!

Hunters and vets in league for butchering many dogs A LARGE group of hunters have been arrested in the Andalusian province of Huelva for mutilating hundreds of dogs. The 26 people, being held in custody, are said to have sliced off their tails and ears with their own knives to save vet fees. Six vets are also being held, allegedly, for issuing phony certificates to try to cover up the crude procedures. And there could be even more arrests. A source familiar with the case said: “To see such clumsy mutilations of ears and tails, and especially to see veterinarians trying to cover it up, in our day and age is, frankly, surprising. We’re talking about slicing animals’ ears right off.” The dogs were left with open wounds from the mutilations that can take years to heal - or never will! The hunters’ aim was to save the 40-euro fee
charged by veterinary clinics for the operation. By law, however, cosmetic surgeries of this nature have been banned in Andalusia since 2003. The raid, named Operation Ears by the Guardia Civil’s environmental protection department, Seprona, began a year ago. Sources said they expected the number of arrests to rise to 50 among the community of hunters and pit-bull owners in three Huelva areas. Following the involvement of the environmental prosecutor’s office, a court this week is believed to have handed down a 10-month prison sentence to the first of the hunters. Most of the suspects refused to give statements after their arrest. Privately, though, they say that cutting off their own dogs’ ears and tails is “an ancestral tradition”, meant to prevent them from getting caught in
the thorns of brambles. As such, they claim that they were simply following a rural tradition. The Andalusian Government’s health department and the regional council of veterinary associations have been cooperating with the Civil Guard to determine the responsibility of the six professionals involved in the case. Since 2003, Andalusian laws have established that dog mutilation “for purely esthetic reasons or without any use, save that practised by veterinarians”, is a very serious breach of animal rights legislation. For years, many Huelva hunters have travelled to vet clinics in the nearby region of Extremadura to bypass Andalusian legislation. But last year, several hunters presented inspectors with dubiouslooking Andalusian vet certificates, with a single document for more than one dog.
Officers began investigating various zoological premises where hunters keep their packs, which are typically made of up 24 dogs. But Alfonso Aguado, President of the Spanish Association of Pack Dog Keepers, has hit back with a veiled threat of his own, saying: “This is, manifestly, an unfair act by the Civil Guard. “If people are being arrested for this motive, we feel that it is the authority placing itself outside the law. This is our starting point for any discussion.” Aguado admits that his association tries, though not always successfully, to get hunters to perform the ear and tail cuts “with sanitary guarantees”. But he also spoke out in the hunters’ defence. “We are expressing our protest because they’ve been treating us abusively. If it is dog welfare that they want, what [the Civil Guard officers] need to
do is talk, instead of arresting dog pack keepers.” Aguado also denies that cutting off the animals’ ears and tails is a cosmetic issue, and claims that mutilating their ears “benefits the dogs”. But Huelva prosecutors confirm the seriousness of the abuse, a source at the prosecutor’s office saying: “It is cruelty without anesthesia, just to save themselves the vet fee. The owner is aware that the animal is suffering.” The investigation shows that some of the dogs had very recent open wounds, urinary incontinence and fear of humans. The suspect vets are alleged to have issued certificates to the hunters to try to give legal cover to the rudimentary surgeries. This represents a violation of ethical codes and criminal conduct in that they forged public documents.
These individuals are also facing preliminary charges of cover-up, and being an accessory to abuse. In exchange for issuing the legal documents, the vets were said to have been rewarded by becoming the service providers for all animals at the premises, including micro-chips and vaccinations for all new pups. But prosecutors argue that this represents unfair competition with regard to other veterinary surgeons respectful of the law. Fidel Astudillo, President of the Andalusian Council of Veterinary Associations, said the suspect vets will have their licences revoked if found guilty by a court of law. “The community of 3,700 Andalusian vets has an interest in clearing this up,” he added. “If there are professionals involved, there is no reason why they should jeopardise the credibility of everyone else.”

Santa Cruz Carnival
The Carnival finished on a high last weekend and the general consensus was it was one of the best ever. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez said “Carnival 2016 is the best I remember.
We had a record number of visitors and everyone had a wonderful time.” He thanked head organiser Gladis de Leon and assistant Jose Angel Alonso. The organisers said over million people attended over the month long festivities. It was boom time for the bars, restaurants and hotels who had over 90% occupancy. The transport system coped with the higher numbers, which in part were down to the unseasonal warm and sunny weather. Tania Martin scooped the Junior Carnival Queen gong while Cecilia Navarro Arteaga was crowned the Carnival Queen and she was the star of the parade. Work has already begun on next years event. And it will be a little later in the year. Carnival 2017 will begin on Wednesday, February 1, with the opening extravaganza. The street parties will begin on Friday 10 February and the parade on Friday 24th February. Photos: Sir Old Golfer

2016 nominations are led by past BRITs Critics’ Choice finalists Adele, James Bay and Years & Years with four each Calvin Harris and Jess Glynne both receive three nominations Two nominations for Coldplay could see them make BRIT history with most ever wins for British Group and the MasterCard British Album of the Year Other artists with two nominations include Jamie xx, Mark Ronson, Florence + The Machine, One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding and Little Mix 2015 was an incredible year for British music and today’s nominations reflect the many successes and standout moments. Chart figures released at the end of the year reveal that for the 11th year in a row the UK’s biggest selling album came from a British artist. By the end of 2015 Adele had sold a phenomenal 2.5 million copies of her third studio album 25, breaking countless records and making chart history along the way. Today her incredible success story continues as she receives four BRIT nominations (British Female Solo Artist, British Single, MasterCard British Album of the Year and British Artist Video of the Year). In addition she is one of the favourites for the BRITs Global Success Award (based on international sales success), which means she could walk away with five awards on the night – something no artist has yet to achieve. Joining Adele with four nominations and flying the flag for new British music is fellow BRITs Critics’ Choice winner Award James Bay (Best British Male Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, British Single and MasterCard British Album of the Year) and 2015 Critics’ Choice runner up Years & Years (British Group, British Breakthrough, British Single and British Artist Video of the Year). Calvin Harris (British Male Solo Artist, British Single and British Artist Video of the Year) and Jess Glynne (British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act and British Single) are both nominated for three awards. With two nominations going to Coldplay (British Group and MasterCard British Album of the Year), Jamie xx (British Male Solo Artist and MasterCard British Album of the Year), Mark Ronson (British Male Solo Artist and British Producer of the Year), Florence + The Machine (British Female Solo Artist and MasterCard British Album of the Year), One Direction (British Group and British Artist Video of the Year), Ed Sheeran (British Single and British Artist Video of the Year), Ellie Goulding (British Single and British Artist Video of the Year) and Little Mix (British Single and British Artist Video of the Year). If Coldplay win both their categories they’ll become the most successful artist in BRIT history in both Best Album and British Group – they are currently tied with Arctic Monkeys on three wins each in both categories. BRITs Chairman Max Lousada said: “The nominations show what a great year it’s been for British talent at all levels, from record-breaking previous BRIT Award winners to newer acts celebrating stellar debuts. Home-grown artists have not only dominated our own charts this year, they’ve won legions of fans the world over by representing British music at its best. We can look forward to a fantastic and hotlycontested Awards show this year.” Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive BPI & BRIT Awards said: “It’s exciting to see so many new acts nominated for the 2016 BRITs. Jess Glynne, Years & Years, Wolf Alice and James Bay, among others, enjoyed huge breakthrough years, while there is also a great buzz around Critics’ Choice recipient Jack Garratt. With established artists such as Adele, Mark Ronson, Calvin Harris, One Direction and Coldplay, also performing very strongly, we’re encouraged that there is such a wealth of talent coming through to give further impetus to British music’s global success.”

Shetland BBC1, 21.00 Perez continues to investigate the double murder case, while struggling to deal with the attack on Tosh. And a shocking discovery leads him to the identity of the person that victim Michael Thompson was going to testify
against. Barefoot and traumatised, Tosh finally turns up in a local Glasgow police station. Despite her initial claim to have only been kidnapped, Tosh eventually confides in Perez the shocking truth of what really happened to her. Perez recognises that the attack was an attempt to warn him off lines of enquiry that he and Tosh were pursuing regarding Glasgow club Level Nine, but Tosh is determined to carry on regardless. Tosh unearths an assault that took place in Level Nine over a decade ago, but her investigation stalls when she finds that all records regarding the incident are missing or incomplete. Suspecting a cover-up, Perez, Tosh, Sandy and Billy dedicate themselves to tracking down the assault victim - Kelly Paterson. As they search for Kelly, Perez is approached by Calvin Sarwar, McCall’s lawyer, who reveals that he no longer wants to work for the gangster but fears reprisals if he walks away. In an attempt to show good faith, Calvin then provides Perez with a clue to the identity of Tosh’s attacker. Kelly finally comes forward and recounts the horrific details of her assault. The name of the man who attacked her is a shocking revelation for Perez and sends the case in a new direction, with powerful repercussions.

Jonathan Edwards presents live coverage of the Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix as a host of world-class names compete at the Emirates Arena, which is staging the event for the first time. Double Olympic gold medallist and five-time world champion Mo Farah will be in action in Glasgow, along with Britain’s Olympic and double world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill and Greg Rutherford, who currently holds the Olympic, world, European and Commonwealth long jump titles. Rutherford will be competing against Paralympic star Markus Rehm, who jumped 8.40 metres on his way to becoming world champion last year - so a fascinating battle lies ahead in that event. The Night Manager BBC1, 21.00 Adapted by acclaimed writer David Farr (Hanna), the gripping contemporary interpretation of the 1993 novel is a complex story of modern criminality which sees former British soldier Jonathan Pine recruited by intelligence operative Angela Burr to infiltrate the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Roper, dubbed ‘the worst man in the world’, in an attempt to bring him down from within. We first meet Jonathan Pine amid the chaos of the Arab Spring in 2011, as he works his way through the rioting crowds to arrive at Cairo’s luxurious Nefertiti Hotel where he works as the night manager. While trying to help frantic tourists, Pine is approached by Sophie Alekan, the mistress of the hotel’s owner Freddie Hamid, who shares files with Pine evidencing an arms deal taking place between Hamid and a man named Richard Roper. Fearing the potentially catastrophic repercussions of the deal, Pine leaks the files to the British Government. The documents land on the desk of Angela Burr, a member of the British Secret Intelligence Service in London who has a long-standing vendetta against the elusive Roper. However, when Roper is tipped off about the government’s intelligence, Sophie is put in extreme danger. We next meet Pine five years on, working at the Meisters Hotel in Zermatt, Switzerland, which Roper and his entourage frequent. Haunted by what happened in Cairo, Pine contacts Angela Burr and a fragile and complex partnership is formed.

Vera ITV1, 20.00
DCI Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) investigates the mysterious death of fisherman Tommy Stonnall, found tangled in the nets of a North Sea trawler. Tommy’s sons LEE (Philip Hill Pearson) and Steve (Ciaran Griffiths) believe the answer lies in a long running feud with Jay Connock(Mark Stobbart), the owner of the local fish market. But since he’s been missing for six weeks, and only dead for twentyfour hours, it’s unclear where Tommy Stonnall has been all this time. With the help of Harbour Master, Frank Mcafee (David Calder) Vera identifies where the body went into the water. Retracing Tommy’s last steps to a run down service station café, Vera and DS Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty) approach waitress Zahra Suleman (Yusra Warsama), who escapes before they can question her further.

Moving On - Taxi For Linda
19th February - 26th February 2016
M onday
BBC1, 14.15
Moving On, the acclaimed daytime drama series created by Jimmy McGovern, is back for a seventh run. Set in and around Liverpool, it features standalone dramas that tell modern stories. The first episode, Taxi For Linda, stars former Coronation Street favourite Julie Hesmondhalgh. Working at the same taxi rank, Linda (Julie Hesmondhalgh) and Frank (John Thompson) are colleagues and confidantes. And that’s all they are…at least as far as Linda is concerned. Frank, on the other hand, could not love Linda more. But he can’t tell her. Well, he could but he can never find the courage. Every time he tries, the words get stuck in his mouth and when driver Terry (Shane Richie) turns up he seems to have missed the moment. As Terry and Linda begin a relationship, Frank is left on his own. Linda thinks the world of Terry but in Frank’s opinion something isn’t right about him. Perhaps this is just a bit of jealousy? But Frank finds out that Terry has been spending a long time ‘dropping off’ certain customers. When he confronts him he discovers something much worse... Frank is left with the prospect of having to tell the woman he loves something that will break her heart.

The Inspectors Are Coming ITV1, 19.30
Negotiations between noisy neighbours, arguments over whose dog pooped on the grass and secret stake-outs to catch anyone dropping a cigarette butt - no crime is too small for a new army of Inspectors, keeping Britain’s streets clean and tidy. But with on-the-spot fines ranging from £40 to £300, they’re not always warmly welcomed by locals. This new series follows law enforcement teams up and down the country, battling with misbehaving Britain. This week in Cleethorpes, the beach inspectors struggle with their new powers to fine as it goes against their usual laid back style. But in Dumfries and Galloway, experienced law enforcers, Erin and Jim, are dishing out £80 fines to anyone caught dropping a cigarette butt, whilst in Newham, John and Terry face one of their busiest nights ever – could they be about to beat their record for the most number of noise complaints?
Heroes and Villains: Caught On Camera ITV1, 21.00 Amazing clips of criminals caught red-handed and members of the public turned crime-fighters. This episode includes the black belt newsagent who turned the tables on an armed robber, front line police officers capturing a shocking knife attack on body camera, pets snatched from our back gardens, pensioners taking on jewellery thieves, and the window cleaner who tackled a gun-wielding bank robber.

The Ashby-Hawkins family give up their 21st-century technology and travel back in time to discover the radical transformation of our leisure time since 1950. Guided by presenters Giles Coren and social historian Polly Russell, the family’s entire experience is underpinned by the Family Expenditure Survey, a government study which ran from the 1950s right through to 1999. The survey gives us the best clue as to what families were doing with their leisure time across the five decades. The family embrace the 80s, where TV and shopping dominated our leisure time. Kids Daisy and Seth are thrilled by the new VCR and home computer, and there is even a pager for Steph, who is now a shoulder-padded 80s businesswoman. Dad Rob has got plenty to occupy him - when he is not trying out the kids’ CB radio, his home sunbed, or having his highlights done.

W C c h oice £100k House: Tricks of the Trade BBC2, 20:00
Piers Taylor and Adam Khan look for micro-budget solutions for problems facing homeowners. Skye and Matt bought the biggest house they could afford, but with a fifth child on the way, they need ideas fast to completely transform it. Piers thinks up an ingenious series of sleeping platforms which could unlock wasted space in the loft, and inspires them to create dramatic light fittings using fluorescent tubes costing just a few pounds. When the money gets really tight, can Piers come up with a way to refit an entire bathroom for free? Mary and her adult son Luke are part of a growing trend that is a consequence of rising house prices - Luke cannot afford a place of his own, so has to remain living with his mum. The challenge for Adam is to find ways they can live independently at times within the same house.

Jericho ITV1, 21.00
Set in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1870s, the drama from production company, ITV Studios, focuses upon the shanty town of Jericho, home to a community that will live, thrive and die in the shadow of the viaduct they’ve been brought together to build. Rough, rustic and remote with a carnival atmosphere, Jericho is a community of pioneers, settlers and outcasts, people with secrets to hide and those looking to start again. In the aftermath of the trial, Annie(Jessica Raine) and Johnny’s (Hans Matheson) relationship is out in the open and they’re finally able to enjoy the intimacy of their union. With Coates (Clarke Peters) on his way out of town, it seems that nothing can now disturb the peace and closeness between them. Except that Coates is determined that his time in Jericho is not yet done. The new quarry is a huge success for Jericho. Blasting through the rock, the men discover a cavern of sandstone that will change the fortunes of the viaduct. The only problem is that Jericho’s navvies won’t go near it: superstitions abound that the mine is on cursed land, the land where the bodies of Happy Jack, Skinnyand Red were buried.

Scorpion ITV2, 21.00 When Team Scorpion and Walter’s parents visit Megan in the hospital as her health deteriorates, they are quarantined after a deadly fungus outbreak threatens to infect everyone. Scorpion is inspired by a true story - its a high-octane drama about eccentric genius Walter O’Brien (played by Elyes Gabel) and his team of brilliant misfits who are the last line of defence against complex, high-tech threats of the modern age. O’Brien’s “Scorpion” team includes Toby Curtis (played by Eddie Kaye Thomas), an expert behaviourist who can read anyone, Happy Quinn (played by Jadyn Wong), a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvestor Dodd (played by Ari Stidham), a statistics guru. Pooling their extensive knowledge to solve mind boggling dramas amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo (played by Robert Patrick), who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien. However, while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other’s humour and quirks, life outside their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen (played by Katharine McPhee), who has a young gifted son, to translate the world for them.

Monty Don travels around the country helping amateurs to create the garden of their dreams. In Clapham, young couple Jack and Chris want to turn their tiny urban back space into a Victorianinspired plant collector’s paradise with a hitech twist. The super organised duo know exactly what they are after - a special dahlia collection, a fern wall and lots of modern gardening gadgets. But as Monty discovers, their timing is not perfect - they are trying to combine making a new garden with totally refurbishing their home. Meanwhile in Hereford, Frankie is trying to renovate her cottage garden with the help of her mother Pat, in memory of Frankie’s sister who died in a tragic accident. Frankie has an ambitious, if rather chaotic, approach to gardening and wants to include some unusual elements like a Romanstyle pond and a gigantic head made from mud.

WEEKEND ON THE PAZ
(Part Two)
By Jamie Droo I BEGIN this week where I left you last week. After one weekend on the Paz, it´s only fair that I bring you Part Two of my weekend in Parque de la Paz.
It has always been one of the most vibrant areas in the South when it comes to entertainment. The variety along this small, tight-knit strip of bars is secondto-none. I started my Paz survey at the “top part” known as that because, quite simply, that’s where the main road is, and most people enter the area from that end. You can move back and forth along the bars, which enables you to savour the same feelings and atmosphere you might get when walking around a fun-fair. Lights from the stage areas that spill out of the bars, and the hustle bustle of customers jostling for position, together with music or live performances, really do add up to that feeling of enjoyment and fun. Everything is so close together, and this area always makes for an exciting night out. Some holiday-makers will not go to any other area because, as far as they are concerned, this 100m strip is everything Tenerife is about. Obviously, this isn’t so because Tenerife has lots to offer. But it´s easy to see why some people are happy to enjoy their nights out here and here alone, for their entire holiday. There is a bar right at the end of the strip on the corner, aptly named The Corner Bar. This venue has been presenting the Island’s finest acts for years and has always had good feedback from those who visit. It offers a wide selection of various artistes, including resident duo System X. This is a fabulous partnership on stage because, not only are the two very good at
what they do musically, but they are also partners in life. Darren and Dee are, indeed, man and wife. They have worked together for years and, individually, as solo artistes. But have grown extremely popular in this bar. There is also lots of variety here, and two fine comedians, both from bonny Scotland, are testimony of that. The hugely-popular Billy Porter and Tenerife favourite Anthony Scott, with his Billy Connolly tribute. I must add that although Connolly is tagged, Anthony delivers his own written comedy in the style of Billy and does not, in the slightest, copy any of his storyline jokes. The same can be said of Billy Porter who has his own, unique style of comedy and has proved, over the years, that there is only ONE Billy Porter. Right next door to The Corner Bar is Brahms & Liszte, which has always had the reputation of housing a touch of class when it comes to singers. The owners, the Feddon family, have always kept the standard extremely high and, on most occasions, it is difficult to find a seat after 9.30pm. It is hosted by Ian Sladen, known by his stage name Dion, who has put his own mark on the place since leaving the circuit with his rock ‘n’ roll show. Dion has a great manner with his audience and a wealth of on-stage experience around Tenerife’s entertainment venues. You will see singers like Jeff Leyton, a superb singer and actor, who has played roles in London’s West End theatres. Jeff sings with such passion, and I find it absolutely amazing that people can see a singer of his calibre in a showbar without having to pay an entry fee. The Corner Bar bar has been made popular by this extremely high standard plus, of course, excellent decisions by the owners in choosing who gets booked to work on their exclusive stage. Moving to
the next establishment along, The Highland Paddy is one of a chain of bars popular with the Karaoke faithful. As well as presenting cabaret shows at 11.15pm, this bar is generally the last one to close along the strip, keeping the Karaoke going until 2am nightly. Resident compere Craig Hevern begins the night-time entertainment from 9.30. And, considering comperes are not expected to match the standard of the vocalists they are presenting, you just get the impression that Craig is actually the night’s cabaret when you hear his voice. He has a wide repertoire from which to draw, and receives many positive comments via social media and Trip Advisor about his singing. This bar is popular among Karaoke fanatics for many reasons. “Karaoke people” will always keep returning to a bar if they are made to feel special, and Craig has the knack of making everyone feel like a celebrity singer, no matter what the standard. After The Paddy. it’s just a hop, skip and a jump along to The Soul Suite, a bar which has no need of a resident host. That’s because the entertainment runs like a finely-tuned engine, with singers starting as early as 8.30pm. And as soon as one act finishes,
the next is ready to go. As the name of the bar suggests, soul music is the order of the nighttime musical theme. The finest of Soul and Motown singers perform here. Michael J Grant, Mikey Mike, James Darling, Michael
Leavy Jnr, Bleu Travelle, Lee St Lawrence and so many more. But what makes this bar very special are the unique collaborations the bar has put together with artistes from its fine stable of talent. The Drifters and Temptations songs are tributed by some of these guys and, when passing, you can find the bar so busy that to get through the crowd, you just have to dance along and move with the mood this venue creates. The last entertainment
venue along Parque de la Paz - in order only - is The Hole In The Wall. This is the residency of Feargal Flaherty. An Irish guitarist/vocalist who not only performs covers but also delivers his own material. Feargal, a recording artiste based in Tenerife, can be seen live, six nights a week in this bar, which is all about the fun that can be had with a group of people who have a love of music. Feargal, like so many along this strip, has his own style, and visitors love the bar and the music he produces. It is always difficult not to clash with surrounding businesses so close together, as these bars are. But over the years, they have worked together to make sure this doesn’t happen. Not one of these bars is the same in any way, all offering a unique, individual experience. The high standard of talent makes this place an entertainment hub in which you can see such a wide variety of what Tenerife has to offer. This is why I always spend my weekends on the Paz!

By Vanessa Vee FIESTAS, Fiestas everywhere! That means random days off school dotted here and there, and two young children who NEED to be entertained.
Always the one to try to find something new to keep them busy, I decided that a trip to San Juan was in order. I have never frequented this area much, but after a recent visit to a restaurant there, I saw how much it had, seemingly, improved over the years. Thus, destination chosen! Heading up the new motorway towards Los Gigantes with a car loaded with the kids, the Spiderman scooter and the pink balance bike, we knew this route was definitely not the quickest. But I love the new motorway, despite my sadness that modernisation has caught up with us in Tenerife. After a straight run, it was time to wind down

the pass-like road to the coast. There is lots of free parking on offer in Playa San Juan, both car-park and roadside, so that didn’t pose a problem. After meeting with a friend, we unloaded the troops and their modes of transport and headed along the pleasant promenade in the direction of Los Gigantes. Some may class it as boring, but I love strolling and taking in the spectacular views and the nature on this beautiful island … the sound of waves crashing, the chatter of other strollers, and the general, tranquil ambience. Nature has created some outstanding rock formations, offering quirky views and a chance to play “spot the crab”. Along the way, what we presumed was a play-area was actually a small dog-agility training park! How wonderful! And the kids still managed to make use of it by pretending they were dogs, running around and jumping. Every-day passers-by were either walking dogs, chatting, strolling or playing petanque. We even-
tually made a U-turn, heading back to the children’s play-area, which was just after the adults “play-area” a section offering light and simple exercises to tune up flexibility.
Next was a pit-stop to one of the bay’s restaurants for tapas: chopitos, tortilla and croquettes. Who wants to give their children McDonalds or similar when they obviously
adore the tapas way? It was all priced reasonably, with fine service and an ideal setting. Next, we ventured off in the other direction, along the beachfront. This is all new to me, which shows how long it was since I last visited. For me, it’s the nearest I can offer to the Goa/Thailand beaches. Yes! There is a bar/cafe on the beach providing anything from waiter service to your sunbeds. So just set yourselves down on your beds, chill completely and be waited on hand and foot. Bed and parasol prices are reasonable,
and there’s a lifeguard on duty. And as well as offering a white, sandy beach, it is, most importantly, maintained immaculately. So if you fancy a different day-out destination, I highly recommend Playa San Juan. For details of hotels and accommodation in this area, or any other, please contact the friendly Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team on 922 751 867, email travel@tenerifesunshine. com or call into their office in Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos. Bad habits, big fines!
By Emma at Motorworld
WE are all aware or should be - that having passed our tests and having been driving for some time, we often fall into bad habits behind the wheel.
While some are not serious, others are, potentially, and here are some which may strike a chord: Failing to indicate When you are approaching a junction or passing through one, and are caught not providing the appropriate signal - indicating a left
or right-hand turn - this is an offence carrying a 200-euro fine. The reason for indicators are quite obvious to most people: they are used to advise other road users - in front, behind, and/or to the side - where you intend to go. If you don’t indicate, you are posing a potential a risk to road-users unaware of your intentions. Pedestrian priority If you fail to respect the priority of a pedestrian, you risk a 200-euro fine and, possibly, a fourpoint deduction from your licence, dependant on the potential risk to those involved. It is interesting to note that in the eyes of the law, pedestrians take preference over drivers, which will come as a surprise to many motorists. Pedestrians are, ap-
parently, the most vulnerable of all road-users. In the event of an accident or incident, they tend to fare worse as they have no protection; hence the need for this law. Keeping cars at bay Driving close behind a vehicle, and/or not allowing a sufficient safety gap, can result in a fine and loss of points if caught. We are all too aware that many drivers provide safety gaps for such circumstances, only to find another motorist pull into them and close any distance which had been allowed. Again, this carries a 200-euro fine and four-point deduction from your licence. The reasoning behind this is that overtaking is considered one of the most dangerous manoeuvres.
When we move into the path of oncoming vehicles and a collision occurs on, say, a 50km/ hr speed-limit road, and both cars are travelling in opposite directions at that speed, the overall impact is the same as hitting a brick wall at 100km/hr.
That’s why it is imperative to take into account your speed when overtaking, and that you do it as quickly as possible. That’s because preventing an overtaking vehicle from returning to the right side of the road can put lives at risk.
Lane-changing folly Changing lanes without respecting a vehicle already in that lane is also a 200-euro fine. Zigzagging between lanes - seen quite often here in Tenerife - results in an identical fine. But if considered reckless driving, it incurs a 500euro fine and six-point licence deduction. In normal circumstances, traffic will run smoothly until a road becomes congested, or there’s an accident. We all know that changing lanes impedes trafficflow constantly, causes delays and can be dangerous, depending on the situation. When you cause another vehicle to deviate from its normal course, speed or direction, it means YOU have become a hazard to other road-users, which in itself is a danger.

Could this be another pointer to dementia? Health By Val Sainsbury INDIGESTION pills taken daily by millions of elderly people are more likely to increase their risk of dementia than those who do not take the drugs. A major study showed that elderly people taking proton pump inhibitor drugs, or PPIs, are 44% more likely to suffer. Millions of bottles and packets are prescribed each year to treat gastroesophageal reflux and peptic ulcers. It is not possible to say exactly to how many people this equates some will take the pills long-term and others will be one-off users. But the drugs, which include omeprazole and lansoprazole, do not require a prescription, so many more Britons buy
PPIs over the counter of pharmacies. They work by restricting the amount of acid produced in the stomach. German researchers who established the link, used insurance data from 74,000 people over the age of 75, which was gathered between 2004 and 2011. According to their results, published in the JAMA Neurology journal, people who used PPIs at least once every three months had a 44% increased risk of dementia, compared with those who did not use them. The study authors admitted their study had limitations, because they were not able to separate different risk-factors for dementia from their data. The team said they could not say why people who took PPIs were more
likely to have dementia. But they said there was a “possible hint” in previous research that people who took the drugs may be vitamin B12 deficient, which is a known riskfactor for neurological damage. The authors also pointed to 2013 Spanish research, when scientists found that mice treated with PPIs developed high levels of amyloid plaques - the protein clumps thought to be instrumental in Alzheimer’s disease. The scientists, led by the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Bonn, wrote: “The present study can only provide a statistical association between PPI use and risk of dementia. “The possible underlying causal biological mechanism has to be explored in future studies.”
But they added: “The avoidance of PPI medication may contribute to the prevention of dementia.” The study looked at PPIs only, and the possible risk does not extend to other indigestion treatments such as antacid treatments, which neutralise excess stomach acid. Separate research by Stanford University last year found a possible link between PPIs and heart attacks. Dr Elizabeth Coulthard, a dementia expert at the University of Bristol, said: “It is important to identify risks for dementia in order to try to eliminate them. “However, this paper does not tell us that using a proton pump inhibitor causes dementia. “One important factor associated with both
proton pump inhibitor use and dementia is body weight - and that is not recorded.” Dr Laura Phipps, of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “This study suggests an association between regular use of a class of drugs given to treat gastrointestinal problems, and an increased risk of dementia in over-75s. “But it doesn’t tell us definitively that the drugs directly cause the condition. There can be many reasons why two factors associate with each other, and the next step will be to investigate the possible reasons for this link. “Studies like this, which harness large amounts of medical data to highlight trends in health and disease, are incredibly useful to inform future, detailed, follow-up studies
into risk factors for conditions like dementia.” He added: “When any drug is taken, doctors, pharmacists and patients have to weigh up the benefits against the potential side-effects.” Dr James Pickett, also of the Alzheimer’s Society, added: “A growing body of evidence now suggests that some medications may be linked to a slightly-increased risk of dementia. “However, heavy users of this medication tend to be in poorer health anyway, with a higher risk of having diabetes and heart disease - both of which are risk factors for dementia. “It is, therefore, very difficult to look at these risk factors based on health records alone and determine how they influence the risk of dementia.”

Good, the bad & the ugly By Nico Gil
of Activate Sports Club FINALLY, some good news! With all the articles around on the increasingly long list of foods we should avoid completely, or eat very rarely, and all the latest studies linking some of our favourite foods to various illnesses, it often leaves us wondering: “What can we eat?” You can all breathe a big sigh of relief. The list of food we can, and should eat is also very long, not to mention delicious. And here are eight things you can enjoy, totally guilt-free:
1.Vegetables: of all the items on our list, this is the only one which you really can forget about portion sizes and eat as much as you want. All vegetables are good for you, but even among this wonderful family of vitaminpacked members, some are worthy of a special mention for being extra good for you. These include spinach, broccoli, garlic, ginger, kale, watercress, sweet potatoes, beetroot and aubergine. 2. Extra virgin olive oil: high in monounsaturated fat (the good kind), extra virgin olive oil has no trans fats (the bad ones) and is one of the best ways to add healthy fat to your diet. Genuine extra virgin oil has a distinctive taste and has the
Part 2: The Good!
most anti-oxidants (it comes from the first pressing of the olives). It’s also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, as well as reducing rates of heart disease and obesity. 3. Red wine: this is a constant source of debate, but evidence does suggest that a small glass of red wine on a regular basis IS good for you after all. This is largely thanks to resveratrol, a polyphenol found in the skin of red grapes, which has been proven to contain anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties. Flavonoids present also lower your risk of heart disease by reducing clotting and increasing levels of good cholesterol. Cheers! 4. Dark chocolate: I kid
you not (wouldn’t be so cruel). Admittedly more exciting than vegetables, dark chocolate (70% cocoa minimum) is actually pretty good for you. Cocoa powder is rich in flavonoids, shown to reduce levels of “bad” cholesterol and increase the “good” levels. A square or two is enough, though - an entire bar is definitely not a good idea. 5. Oily fish: salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines are all very high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to a reduced risk of depression, heart disease, and cancer. Wherever possible, go for fresh rather than tinned or farmed varieties, and don’t overdo your tuna consumption (it can be high in mercury; once a week is enough).
6. Beans & legumes: lentils, chick peas, black beans and kidney beans are all fantastic sources of protein and fibre. The darker the bean, the more anti-oxidants they have, so make sure your diet contains a variety. Regular consumption can lower your risk of heart disease and some cancers by up to 25%, and they play a vital role in vegetarian and vegan diets. 7. Nuts & seeds: they may be small, but you’d be amazed at how much invaluable nutrition is packed into each tiny seed and nut. Remember to eat them in the most natural state possible (not fried or with added salt). Walnuts and almonds are especially good for you, as are chia and flax seeds, which can fight
aging and even cancer. Sprinkle them on salads for extra crunch, or even blend them into smoothies. Only a few nuts constitutes a serving, though, so don’t eat the whole packet! 8. Fruit: this is another group from which the portion police can take a rest because the recommended intake is around 3-5 pieces a day. Lemons are among the best, for their high vitamin C levels, as well as bananas, tomatoes, avocadoes, raspberries, pomegranates, blueberries and apples. Eat whole pieces of fruit rather than juicing because the skin and flesh is also packed with nutrients. Don’t miss the final article in our series, Part 3: The Bad, coming soon!

FRINGES
WITH BENEFITS
By Carl Pattison “I WANT to change my look.” My reply: “Let’s put in some sort of fringe.” Client reaction: “AGGGHHHH.”
But why? Why the hysterics about something that not only flatters, but hides a multitude of sins underneath it, too? What do you have to lose, I say? Adding a fringe to any length of hair creates instant interest and movement, and draws attention to the eyes. Fuller fringes, as in the photo, really bring out the eye area, as they highlight this zone, making eyes seem wider. Side fringes, as shown, bring softness to the face. They distract from high foreheads, which can look quite stark. Also, they shorten the face, making it appear more feminine. Opting for a fringe, if you have longer hair, can revamp your look without losing your length, so you can reinvent your image with-
out doing anything too drastic. Growing one out, if you get tired of it, couldn’t be easier. A full fringe can be swept to one side, and then blended back in with the sides of your hair. There’s really no fullon commitment to any sort of fringe. So, next time you’re thinking of a change, check out what type of fringe could suit you and your hair, and try one out to re-invent your look. Your stylist can show you suggestions of one that would work for you. Just don’t get out
the kitchen scissors and try it yourself. We make it look simple, but a badly-cut fringe can leave you looking permanently surprised.
STARS IN STRIPES By Carl Pattison
THEY just keep on coming this year … new trends, that is. And, hot on the heels of last week’s floral frenzy, come stripes.
But, there is a new way to wear them, and it’s not all nautical, as you might once have seen. Asymmetrical stripes give a quirky look to this theme. This is a great way to wear them, if you don’t want to give yourself a broader look, as with horizontal stripes. Horizontal stripes accentuate every curve,
and can make you look larger than you are - so beware. Verticals are the best, because they slim you down and elongate your figure. Stick to finer stripes, though. This year, the hotteststriped items come in an array of colours. The most-striking are your blacks and whites, which look great, as they see you through to the hottest summer
months. Don’t overdo the look by adding in too much colour in your accessories. Tone in the details, or they will clash with the rest of your outfit. An excellent idea is to choose a two-piece and use opposing stripes to really rock this look - say broader stripes on your lower half, and adding in a finer stripe on your top. You can ring the changes from smart to casual on this one. Whatever you do, don’t add in another pattern, because this will detract from your overall look. Stick to the same theme, and you, too, will be sassy in stripes.

This German Shepherd Husky cross is crying out for a home of her own and, as you can see, she just wants a cuddle. Please, give her a chance to cuddle you. Call Sue for more information on 629 388 102. Fund-raiser treat We start this year’s fund-raisers
at Clouseau’s Bar, Palm Mar, on Sunday (21st Feb), from 2pm onwards. The event, hosted by Derrick Lynes and Suzy q, features some really excellent entertainment, including Ken Sharratt, Gordon King, Abba Angels, Howard Baker, Emma Blacka, Hayley Butler, Debbie Diamond, Sean King, Chrissie Dean, Elaine Alexander, and Derrick Swaine. Don’t miss it because we have amazing prizes on the raffle, including a head camera, and we’ll be auctioning a football, signed by CD Tenerife footballers.
Half the proceeds will be donated to the MADAT refuge, which needs to complete building works costing 20,000 euros to avoid official closure in six months. We hope this benefit will go some way towards helping this valuable refuge achieve its aims. Please add your support. Must-go Mustcat Join us on the MustCat on Saturday week (27th Feb), sailing from Las Galletas port at 10am on a three-hour trip out to watch the whales and dolphins. For a heavily-discounted 25-euro price, you even get free drinkies. Tickets are flying out, so call Sue to reserve yours before they all go. Easter-Egg hunt Following last year´s success, we are doing it all again on Good Friday. Join us on the San Blas Top Square
from 8pm. Kids can seek and find Easter Eggs, and there will be a night full of entertainment, hosted by Suzy q and Colin Stevens. Our Charity shops There are plenty of bargains for all, so have a good root around at any of our three shops: *San Eugenio, opposite Hotel La Nina, at las Carabelas near Amandas Bar. Open MondaySaturday (10am-4pm) *Los Cristianos, Calle Revron, near Thistle and Dragon Bar and playpark. Open daily (10am-4pm) *Golf del Sur, Golf Park, just before the lottery kiosk. Open Monday-Friday (10amto 6pm), Saturday (10am-4pm), Sunday (10.30am-3.30pm). Save them for us! Don’t throw things away! Call us on 629 388 102 and we will sell your unwanted items to help the dogs.
Cats Welfare news
How deep is your love? THERE are many special reasons to adopt a cat, rather than a kitten. Adopting a cat from Cats Welfare obviously supports our work, and gives an abandoned animal a home. In addition, it will be neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped … and comes with a health
book. And that’s just the start! Here are a few of our other favourite reasons for adopting a cat, or as we like to call them, Fur-babies. *Independence Kittens cannot be left alone for long periods because they are babies. But once they have gained some confidence,
Go crazy over Daisy THE Swallows Drama Group are presenting awardwinning play Daisy Pulls It Off at the Hotel Tryp (Princesa Dacil) in Los Cristianos early next month.
It will be the group’s third annual play under the direction of Michael Huntington, produced in aid of Cancer Research in Tenerife, and is sure to be another sell-out. The play will be staged on 3rd-5th March. Curtain-up is at 5.30pm on the opening night, and at 7.30pm on the Saturday’s finale. The comedy play,
written by Denise Deegan, is based on Winifred Norling’s 1939 novel, The Testing Of Tansy. It tells the story of Daisy, a scholarship girl who attends Grangewood Young Ladies school. And to prove herself, she must overcome prejudice and class divisions. And pull it off she does, in grand style at the school’s annual hockey match. Tickets, costing 12 euros, are available at the Bar El Tejar, Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos, on Mondays (11amnoon), or from the Hotel Tryp (Princessa Dacil) reception.

you can leave the house for an entire day, even overnight, knowing they will be fine. Cats, by nature, are independent animals and don’t mind being without a constant companion; nor do they need constant supervision. This makes them the perfect pet for those who work, people living in apartments, and the pet person who doesn’t want to feel obligated to go for multiple daily walks. *Cuddles Independent they may be, but cats can also be cuddle fanatics. Nestled into a warm spot against you, or lounging across your chest and demanding an ear-scratch, you will find them extremely affectionate. Greatest part? The purring! *Self-grooming Having pets which clean themselves is an amazing benefit. And they are so good at it, too. No need for costly grooming salons. *House-trained Their other fantastic trait is that they use litter. For most cats, all you need is to set up a litter tray, introduce the cat
to the box, and you are done. Living with a cat means never having to worry about getting home late and realising you still need to go out into the darkness to take them to do their “business”, as you do with a dog. Cleaning a litter box is not as half as bad as noncat people like to describe it. In our humble opinion, it’s easier than picking dog poo up off the ground with a plastic bag! *Hunting Skills Cats will keep your home and garden clear of rats, mice, and other unwanted animals. But keep in mind, though, the following, extremely important precautions: Do not allow your cat to actually ingest any of its kills, since there is a possibility of it ingesting some of the parasites that live in those small animals and insects, especially cockroaches. Also, don’t use rat or mouse poison in your home, since even a small bite of a rodent which has ingested poison can also make it into your cat’s body.
Who’s up for more walkies? FOLLOWING the huge success of our last event, when we asked people to give our refuge dogs a day of fun, we are organising a walk down to the sea with them.
Please call or email the refuge to request a small, medium or large dog, and to register yourself for the walk. The dogs always have a brilliant time on this walk, and, if you are unable to have a dog of your own but would like to volunteer, please join us and make an animal very happy. The date will be announced as soon as possible With the weeks galloping by, we are already planning our Children’s Summer Camp, between 15th-19th August (Monday to Friday), from 8am-4pm. The age groups are between 8-15 years, and youngsters will learn about animal care and welfare, as well as enjoy various excursions,
games, and much more. This is a special opportunity for them, so please contact us by phone or email for more information, and/or to enrol your child. Lend a hand Please call the refuge on 922 778 630 if you can help us in any way. We always need tinned dog food for our older animals, as well as blankets, towels, sheets and dog toys, plus collars and leads. If you have any of these items going spare, they would be much appreciated at the refuge. Come see the dogs Visiting hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, between 2-5pm, and Saturdays (1-4pm). We are situated directly under the ecological park, exit 52 on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills and you’ll see our buildings on the right. You can email us at teneriffa@aktiontier. org – phone 922 778 630, or visit our Facebook page, action tier Accion del SOL.
Swallows in the frame THE Swallows Art Exhibition will be held in the Swedish Church, on the Los Cristianos seafront, on the following dates and times this month:
Tomorrow (Sat) from 10am-4pm; 21st, Sunday (10am-2pm); 23rd, 24th, 25th Feb (10am-7pm), 26th (10am-2pm); 27th (10am-1pm).

Beware of imitations
THERE are now just a few matches to go in the Direct Telecom Pool League, following the ninth visit of the original Scotland pool tour, and Division One has a familiar look to it.
A few sides have threatened to upset the status quo this season, but they have just come up short a case of the original still being the best. Gaffers A took another step closer to the Division One title after their home match against Terrace Roosters. The visitors, who are in a relegation battle, really need the points, but they came up against tough opposition. Gaffers led 3-1 after the first session, replicated it in the second and, at 6-2, there was no coming back for the Roosters. The next frame went the way of the home team and it was game over. M a t h e m a t i c a l l y, Gaffers can still be caught, but it will take a monumental collapse for the leaders not to be crowned champions.
Tenerife Hammers A, leading the chasing pack, had a tough match at home against Palms B, who have been strong this season. This was certainly reflected as both teams played some good pool. Well, with the exception of Hammers’ Wez, who, in his own words, was “an illusion”. The frames were tight and could have easily gone either way. Palms’ Graeme missed a black he would normally have got, while the Hammers remained resilient. They had enough in hand to get the job done, with a professional win against their noisy neighbours. Treehouse A are breathing down the necks of the top two, but they’ve played more matches. And they were made to work hard by Bluebell A. The Bluebell lads have found life tough in their first Division One season. But on their day, they are capable of playing some good pool. It was another close match but Treehouse A just had enough in the tank. Dreamers A are fourth but, with games in hand on the

teams above them, could still finish as high as second. They continued their fine run of form with a home win against Exiles A. And in what has become somewhat of a trademark, they raced into an early lead. Well, when I say early lead, I mean early victory because after the first two sessions it was 7-1 to the home side and game over. Exiles A did pick
up some late frames, though, to make the score more respectable. The Phoenix started the season at a slow pace, but have been in form of late, moving to a mid-table position without many people noticing. And a home game against Gaffers B saw them go above their bar-mates after another routine win. The visitors are a difficult side to face, having given some of the top teams a run for their money this season. But it wasn’t to be as The Phoenix proved too strong. Phoenix Potters will have been disappointed to see them rise above them, but they lost a close game against Palms A. These sides met a few weeks ago and, in many ways, it was almost a carbon-copy of the match in Los Abrigos. Phoenix took a swift 2-0 lead, only for Palms to roar back. They controlled the middle frames and were well-
placed when Taliban made it 6-3. However, the Phoenix pensioners were not quite done, and back-toback frames made it 6-5, only for Roscoe to beat Geoff for the third time on the night to seal a 7-5 win, which pretty much guarantees their top-flight status. Terrace Bantams, in Puerto Colon to face Rewind A, were attempting to halt an awful run of form. It was certainly not a night for purists because both teams were not playing well, and many of the frames were littered with mistakes. Over the first two sessions there was nothing to separate them, and the score was poised at 4-4. The Ripper took his third frame to fire Rewind A 6-4 up. But captain John was having an off-night and Bantams’ Sparky pulled off a good finish to make the score 6-5. Then Marky P rolled back the years to beat Wilf and give relegation-worried Bantams a vital point. In Division Two, Rewind Rewired are still flying, thanks to another week of back-
to-back wins. Firstly, they swotted aside promotion rivals Treehouse B after sharing the first four frames. It looked as though session two would go the same way until Valeri beat Simon to give the visitors a 5-3 lead going into the final session. Valeri went straight back on and, in a tough game, eventually beat Sean to make it 6-3. At this point, Treehouse heads dropped and Rewind moved through the gears to won the remaining frames. Then, 24 hours later, they also won 9-3 at Bluebell B, despite Grant winning a few frames for the hosts. Rewind are now just a point off the top, having played two games more than The Crown B. The two sides clash on Wednesday and it should be tasty! Elsewhere, Splash Bar continued their fine season with a smooth 8-4 win at TPT. It was a real team effort, with all players winning two frames. And Sabores slumped to another defeat. They returned home from Torviscas 8-4 losers, but certainly a little merrier!

Top Flight of the Phoenix SEVEN Division 2 matches were played last Friday, producing seven home wins. And none more important than Phoenix Flights’ 5-3 victory over Waterfall B.
It included a third 180 from Topgun and secured their first-ever League title, so congratulations to them. Waterfall B put in a good showing, forcing Flights to hold the trebles leg for their 25th success of the campaign. The Drambuie was still flowing long into the night, I can tell you! Spear Chuckers will just fall short, despite whitewashing Legends. They need three points from their last fixture to guarantee second spot, while Sandys Chippers’ 6-2 win over Summerlands means they will
finish no lower than third. Elsewhere, Simon hit his maiden maximum for Picassos during his side’s 5-3 defeat at Sundowners. The Jucee Girls and Naughty Nautas both notched six points, while the Playgirls consigned Waterfall B to the wooden spoon by beating Bar Leones. The big Division 1 match saw the second and third teams do battle. And with maximums from Boothen’s Sam and Gaffers’ Matt, the match was evenly poised at 2-2. Boothen, still with a slight chance of the title, dug in their heels and took the last four points for a convincing 6-2 win. The upshot is that Phoenix Bar will be crowned Division 1 champions with a single point from next Friday’s home encounter with Emerald Shamrocks. Gaffers will finish third following the Hoppys Bar draw with

Numpty Natalio returns Real Oviedo 1 CD Tenerife 0 By Roscoe FOR the second time in a matter of weeks, Tenerife played in a paddling pool. While they left Ponferradina with a win, they left Oviedo pointless, yet they actually played far better than the hosts.
Ricardo was superb in midfield and it was his best performance for many a year. Oviedo took the lead midway through Toche
in the first half. He is more battering-ram than battery-boy, and his lead was against the run of play. Tenerife have looked a little lost in recent weeks, yet in Oviedo they looked fresh. Maybe they just need a bit more rain on their backs? Again, chances went begging and Oviedo will know they pinched a win. But it’s something for Tenerife to take forward, and they should carry on the upward curve at home against struggling Llagostera. They are looking like the provincially team they are this season after staying up last cam-
paign, somehow! A few weeks ago they brought in a man Tenerife fans hate. And believe me, the word is “hate”. Of course, Natalio wasn’t solely to blame for the team’s 2011 relegation. I could fill the whole paper on that subject. No, the fans’ fury comes from his attitude. From the very first minute, he looked like a player who didn’t want to be anywhere near the Island. He played 33 games and scored four goals, but he was always a terrace target. Nobody wanted him in the closeseason. And I mean nobody! I remember the Arma-
da Sur giving him a ton of stick in the pre-season match at CD Marino. He was eventually picked up by Numancia where, it has to be said,
he did very well in the next 4½ years. This week Natalio said: “The club crest of Tenerife, I would not sweat my c**k for. Ten-
erife fans are deluded … and every time I visit the Heliodoro, it is like I murdered somebody.” He is SO getting the traditional welcome!

By Adi Benson IT’S back to FA Cup action this weekend as the fifth-round matches get underway. We still have a League 1 club in the mix, as well as a few Championship teams, so a little touch of giant-killing is still possible. Chelsea (PL) v Man City (PL) This is likely to be clash of the weekend, and it’s the sixth time the clubs have met in this competition. Chelsea won the very first clash - a thirdround tie in the 1914/15 season. But City have had the upper hand by winning the last four matches, including backto-back games in 2013 and 2014. This will be Chelsea’s 49th time in the fifth round, the third-highest of all clubs. And they have also recorded the third-highest number of exits at this stage with 16. City can beat that, though, because they have been knocked out 17 times in this round. Prediction: Home win Reading (CH) v West Brom (PL) These two clubs also have a history in the Cup
19th February - 26th February 2016
Giant-killers still hopeful and will be playing each other for the fifth time. Surprisingly, the Championship club have the better record, winning three of the previous four meetings. The last time they played each other was back in 2011, in a third-round game, and it was the last time West Brom were been knocked out by a team from a lower division. Reading have only ever been as far as the semis just last year - while West Brom are five-time winners, lifting the trophy the last time in1968. Prediction: Home win Watford (PL) v Leeds (CH) Neither of these teams have a particularly good record when it comes to the Cup. While Leeds have won the Cup once, Watford have only ever been runners-up, back in the 1983/84 season under Elton John’s chairmanship. This is the clubs’ first FA Cup clash, so there is no head-to-head record, but the Premier League side will be heavy favourites. Watford haven’t been this far in six previous seasons, although they have reached the semis twice since 2000. Leeds have a lesser record recently because they’ve got this far just twice in the same period. Prediction: Home win
Shrewsbury (L1) v Man Utd (PL) Shrewsbury are the lowest-placed league team left, and they will be fired up for a home game against Man Utd. And given the way United are playing, I am sure they will fancy their chances. This is the first meeting of the clubs, and the first time in 25 years that Shrewsbury have got this far. In fact, they are just one game away from equalling their best Cup run, back in 1982. Man Utd despite being 11-time winners, have not lifted the trophy since 2004, but they have progressed past this round seven times in the last 11 seasons. Prediction: Away win Blackburn (CH) v West Ham (PL) This will be a familiar fixture for both sides because it’s their seventh FA Cup encounter, and the tally stands at three wins each. All the games have been close, with four ties needing a replay. In 1998’s fifth round, Hammers eventually went through after a penalty shoot-out. Blackburn have fared better in recent years because they have reached the quarter-finals twice in the last three seasons. while West Ham haven’t gone beyond the fifth
round in five years. Prediction: Draw Spurs (PL) v Crystal Palace (PL) A derby game always makes for a better tie, and there is no love lost between these two sides. In the first two Cup meetings between the clubs, Palace were victorious. But Spurs have won the last two. They haven’t been goal-fests, though, because in each of the four games, one of the two clubs failed to score. In fact, there was a 0-0 game that went to a replay. Palace could be favourites to go through because, in the previous three seasons, they have exited in the third, fourth and fifth rounds consecutively. For Spurs, it’s the first time in four seasons they have made the fifth round. Prediction: Home win Arsenal (PL) v Hull (CH) So Arsenal and Hull meet for the third consecutive season with the Gunners coming out on top in the previous clashes, most notable the Final two seasons ago. The teams have met five times in the Cup but you have to go back to when Arsenal were still known as Woolwich Arsenal for a Hull victory, way back in the 1907/08 season. The records show a 4-1
Ñandu soar high with Eagles ÑANDU were proud to welcome the first-ever Scottish rugby touring side to the Island recently.
Dundee Eagles’ Under-18 side arrived, fresh from Scotland’s Calcutta Cup showdown against England at Murrayfield. And despite the home side’s 15-9 defeat, they were looking for some winter sun and some rugby. The teams enjoyed an excellent rugby festival at the marvellous La Caleta facilities of T3, which continues to be a source of great help and support to Ñandu. The event started with a stirring display of bagpipes, and both teams getting acquainted. The Eagles
win to Hull in a replay. Arsenal are attempting to win the cup for the third time in a row, a feat not achieved since Blackburn did it 130 years ago. Arsenal also hold the record for the most fifthround appearances. this being the club¡s 55th appearance at this stage. Prediction: Home win Bournemouth (PL) v Everton (PL) It has been a long, long while since this fixture appeared in the FA Cup. That was in the 1936/37 season, when the home
side were still in the old Third Division and known as Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic. That third-round match finished 5-0 in favour of Everton. Just behind Arsenal in terms of fifth round appearances, they are making their 53rd appearance, while Bournemouth have progressed this far for the first time since 1989. A win for the Cherries will equal their best-ever Cup run, which they last achieved 59 years ago. Prediction: Draw
Lee glee over Frankenstein AFTER last weekend’s high points-scoring in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League, via the Premier League’s interesting outcome, a lot of teams came crashing back down to earth. Liverpool, big winners after thrashing bottom club Aston Villa, had three players in the point-scoring team of the week. Just behind them were Chelsea with two, after an impressive performance against Newcastle, and West Brom, winners against Everton, also two. The rest came from Southampton, West Ham, Stoke and Watford. Top honours went to Pedro and Coutinho, who each amassed 15 points. Fran Devaney still holds top spot in the Oasis Fm League, but his Baines on Toast team didn’t have a good week, enabling the chasing pack to get to within 34 points of him. His main threat now looks to be Lee Walsh, whose Frankenstein Utd have really moved up the league in recent weeks. And, after another good points haul,
they are now occupying second spot. Passo Utd have dropped to third while Spartans, managed by Jamie Palmer, are now fourth. Last week, you may recall, I predicted they were the team to watch. Teams in the top half of the table didn’t score particularly well this week, and we had to drop into the bottom half of the League for our team of the week. That honour went to Michael Brookshaw and his Bang Bang FC team, who scored a decent 74 points. His standout players were Clyne, Eriksen and Vardy and Deeney up front. Between the quartet, they contributed a mammoth 50 points to his total, moving him nicely up the league. This week is FA Cup weekend and, with a host of Premier League clubs not involved, it’s a chance for players to recover from knocks and injuries and build up their fitness levels. So keep a close eye on your teams for match-fit players returning to action.
Fantasy Football League were, on average, two years older than the Ñandu players, and the rugby began with teams mixing for a 10-a-side tournament, which was an excellent way for the players to interact, swapping tactics and skills. The day culminated in a full 15-a side match, played over 30 minutes each way. Ñandu players were again superb,
with Gregor scoring a memorable try. But the tourists’ superior age and size saw them emerge victorious with some great plays of their own. During their fourday stay, the Dundee youngsters experienced Siam Park, went whale-watching on Mustcat Catamarans. Adeje Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso also
presented a commemorative plaque to the tourists, who returned home tanned and tired, with some wonderful memories. Ñandu are back in league action next week with a trip to Fuerteventura. The season is picking up pace, and they are again setting an example - both on and off the pitch!
