Extra Bus funding means extra trips Continued from front She launched the campaign over two years ago when she realised the plight of those who could not afford to use public transport to the North every day for treatment.

She told officials from AECC (Spanish Association Against Cancer) at a recent meeting, held at Paradise Park Hotel, Los Cristianos, about the excellent progress made by the Bus over the past year: 522 visits to and from the hospital, with a total of 123 people using the free facility to get to their treatment.

Now, Carol plans to run the bus twice a day to benefit more people.

It will mean an extra 10,000 euros a year to cover the running and maintenance overheads, as well as the driver’s additional hours, on top of to the regular, annual running costs of some 36,000 euros.

These overall payments are verified by AECC, with whom Carol’s KM Solidario charity is officially registered.

And she makes it plain that she plays no part in assessing these outgoings, leaving it to the Association to work them all out.

During the meeting, she received an instant 5,000-euro donation from the Los Cristianos Swallows group, run

by Carole and Mike Hart, which was later matched by San Miguel

Lions Club. Further donations were presented

by Early Birds Bowling Club, at Happy Days in Costa del Silencio, and Wingate School’s very young children, who made cakes to raise money, as well as other, individual donations.

An overwhelmed Carol said: “I had no idea the scheme would take off in such a big way, but I can now understand why.

“The AECC tells me that it costs approximately 250 euros per month for someone using the public transport system to get from the

South to Candelaria hospital.

“That is, if they’re well enough to make such a difficult journey back home after their treatment.

“The anti-cancer Association has also pointed out to me that some families are so poor that, when they realise a family member needs to go for regular treatment, they have to choose between eating and enabling that person to use public transport.”

She added: “That is why the free Cancer Bus, which we are all supporting, is SO necessary for some patients.”

Those who attended the meeting included Swallows’ representatives; F.A.S.T; Rotary Clubs; Masonic Lodges; Golf, Bowling and Darts Clubs; Lions Club International; San Blas Cultural Centre and Wingate School.

There were also many other individuals, all of whom had donated to the Bus purchase.

And there was even a Congratulatory Message from British Vice Consul Helen Keating for the work carried out via the Bus so far.

Naturally, Carol is delighted with the response, But, while ap-

preciating that some Ayuntamientos (Town Halls) have already contributed, she feels “the Authorities” might have taken over the Campaign by now: perhaps the five Ayuntamientos sharing the transport costs between them since the free transport is available to patients from all areas in the South.

It is obvious that Carol, a tireless campaign worker for the cause, is well-supported by Brits in the South, and she really appreciates every euro they have donated.

But she admits to feeling weary. She also be-

lieves she has “done her bit” and is looking for someone to replace her.

Carol would seriously welcome anyone with fresh ideas, able to run events to raise the necessary funds - or anyone who has the energy to approach banks or businesses (most of which each have “charity funds just sitting there”) and she will be happy to advise.

Meanwhile, she is organising another Bring & Buy Charity Market - New & Nearly New Clothes, Shoes, Bags, Household items, Brica-Brac etc. And she already has golf clubs, TV digi-boxes, telephones, a baby’s travel cot, baby-walker and play-mat, bar stools, roller-boots, a George Foreman grill, power tools, etc.

This will be held next Friday (4th March) from 10am-3pm at La Pepa Food Hall Terrace (Above Dial Prix & Santander), Pasarella Oasis Bdg. (Nr Paradise Park Hotel), Los Cristianos.

Any items you no longer need can be brought to the Apolo Centre’s Tejar Bar, Los Cristianos, on Monday (29th Feb) after 10.30am, or directly to the La Pepa Food Hall Terrace after 8.30 on the morning of the Market.

But Carol still needs to borrow hanging rails and coat-hangers, plus some help with transporting small car-loads.

Rajoy’s backing UK to remain in the EU MARIANO Rajoy, acting Spanish Prime Minister at least until the outcome of December’s General Election has been settled, is backing the agreement to which UK premier David Cameron accepted.

The pact, at the weekend’s European Council meeting in Brussels, included the UK’s place in the European Union, ahead of a referendum in the country on whether or not to stay in the EU; the adoption of conclusions on the migration and refugee phenomenon; the situation in Syria and Libya and the endorsing of recommendations on the Eurozone economic policy.

Rajoy, regarding the UK, said: “We reached an agreement that is acceptable for all concerned which, while respecting the fundamental and founding principles and values of the European Union, we believe will be

enough for the British people to choose to remain in the EU. “We have all made a significant effort to accommodate the requests made by Prime Minister Cameron, while being flexible and

constructive.”

He added: “It is very important for Spain, the European Union and, I sincerely believe, the interests of the British people, and Spanish people, for the United Kingdom to re-

Social-housing plan for families in need

THE Cabildo and Tenerife’s 31 municipalities have launched a new Insular Housing Rehabilitation Plan for the next two years, starting with a 1,322,700- euros investment for 2016 alone.

Its purpose is to ensure social-housing solutions for those below the minimum living conditions, who are in dire need of help.

Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said: “The Cabildo wants to see more action in the Investment Plan - some

real results.

“We are prioritising and providing more resources to people who need it most, who have suffered with the crisis.

“We are creating jobs for small and medium enterprises on the Island, so we face the two key issues: favouring the under-privileged and acting directly on job creation. It is a multi-year plan that will last over time.”

Aurelio Abreu, Vice President and Municipal and Housing Co-operation Minister, said: “It is the first time the Cabildo has taken part in a Housing Rehabilitation Plan, and we are focusing on the most disadvantaged groups, most in need.

“With the great cooperation that exists on the part of municipalities and the Canarian Government, we can incorporated a plan.”

The scheme’s launch was attended by some mayors, including Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, who congratulated the Cabildo for this initiative saying: “Along with the work we are already doing, this helps the resources of families not included in the State Plan for Housing.”

And La Laguna Mayor José Alberto Diaz, added: “This action will contribute to policies we are currently performing in La Laguna.

The acting PM believes that this goal has been met “reasonably well” because the approved text, including the admission of comments from Spain, “much more clearly limits the accepted exceptions and restrictions to the freedom of workers” so that they are just that - “exceptions that must be justified and limited in time, scope and without discriminating on grounds of nationality”.

Rajoy admitted that Spain was also concerned about “ensuring that the principle of equal treatment and fair competition is respected in the financial and banking markets”, issues on which improvements have been made to the text over the initially-proposed version.

He stressed that, in terms of competitiveness, Spain “shares and supports the concept of a European Union that is open to trade, competitive in the world and focused on the objectives of research, development, innovation, and single, digital and energy markets”.

Finally, Rajoy said that the agreement did not mean “a change to the EU treaties”, any potential amendments to which will have to take place in line with the established review procedures” and, as far as Spain is concerned, “the Spanish Constitution”.

As for migratory movements, Rajoy said: “Spain insisted on a basic principle the best way to resolve the migrant crisis is by tackling its root causes to avoid its consequences.”

To that end, he said: “We should co-operate with the countries of origin and transit of migrants and refugees; fight people-traffickers by breaking up their criminal organisations; properly-control our

borders - and foster an effective return to their countries of those who are not entitled to asylum under our laws, and according to our courts.”

Spain, he said, was committed to “the relocation and resettlement of the people who come to Spain as they flee from war, terrorist barbarity or regimes that do not respect the most basic human rights.

“But nothing can be done without the cooperation of the countries of origin, and cooperation from Turkey is key to the current crisis.”

Rajoy said the European Council has approved financial aid for Turkey and has scheduled a meeting with the Turkish Prime Minister in the near future.

The European Council also approved the economic recommendations for the Eurozone which, according to Rajoy, “are fully in line with the economic policy strategy that the Government of Spain has been implementing over the last four years”.

Body of missing soldier is found THE young Huddersfield soldier, reported missing by his family and regiment last week, has been found dead - somewhere in Tenerife.

Tragic Matty Bermingham, 21, fled to the Island after going AWOL from his regimental headquarters earlier this month.

Tenerife officials confirmed on Tuesday that the body of a man had been found, but offered no further details.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office told the Huddersfield Examiner, who broke the story last week: “We have offered support to the family of a British national who

has died in Tenerife, and are in contact with local authorities.”

The sky’s coming alive with planes THE Air Force has scheduled three weeks of exercises in the skies over the Canary Islands to test the responsiveness of all its combat units.

It’s a NATO-backed exercise, involving a collaboration with Air Force planes from Belgium, France, Germany and the US. As reported by the Ministry of Defence, there are two exercises, DACEX and DACT, which started on Wednesday and carries on until 11th March, testing air scenarios/air combat and testing the ability of the reaction forces deployed permanently in the Canaries.

In the DACEX stage, All 46 Canary Islands’ Air Command will deploy troops to Lanzarote, with the reinforcement of a squad-

ron of 15 Wing, based in Zaragoza, which will operate from Gando Air Base, Gran Canaria.

The DACT phase, involves all combat units and combat support of the Air Force, which will be joined by four allied planes and AWACS. This is a NATO-operated fleet of Boeing E-3A “Sentry” Airborne Warning & Control System (AWACS) aircraft, equipped with longrange radar and passive sensors capable of detecting air-and-surface contacts over large distances.

The following aircraft will operate from Gando Air Base and Lanzarote’s Military Airfield: Cazas F-18 of Wings 12, 15 and 46; Eurofighters of Wings 11 and 14; Falcon 20 and Aviocar of Group 47; Hercules of Wing 31 and Super Puma helicopters of 802 Squadron of the Air Force; the Navy’s AV-8B Harrier; Mirage 2000, of the French Air Force;

Eurofighter, A-4 Skyhawk and Learjet of the German Luftwaffe; F-16 of the Belgian Army and the AWACS. They will also be taking part in an Air Force Support Squadron Air Display, which includes a team of Sappers from the Parachute Squadron. Flight units from the Spanish mainland will test the Canaries’ Air Defence system, including the involvement of Wing 46 air defence aircraft.

From Monday (29th Feb), air activity will focus on advanced training in aerial combat between different planes.

Air combat training, taking place over the ocean, will be controlled by the Group Warning and Control Gando, and NATO’s AWACS. The Operating Air Control Squadron of Las Palmas is co-ordinating the arrivals and departures area, training with the Canaries’ Civil Air Traffic Control.

John Dunbar, a friend of Matty, who has set up a JustGiving charity page to help the family, said: “I have made this page in honour of Matty for his suffering family.

“This page is for friends, or anybody who would like to help contribute towards money for the family - whether it be funeral costs, or a headstone. Proceedings will go straight to Matty’s family.”

Matty was a firm Huddersfield Town fan, and tributes came from fellow football followers.

Mark Massey said: “Very sad news, RIP Matty Bermingham. Will always remember the winning goal you scored at Holmfirth Town whilst playing for Waterloo … me and a few oth-

ers still talk about it.”

Gary Home, who lost a best friend - another local league footballer, to cancer last month said: “Another lovely lad gone. RIP Matty Bermingham. Never saw you without a smile on your face. Thoughts going out to your family and friends.”

Zoe Johnson wrote: “Will always be a huge part of my life, Matty.

Love you to pieces, sleep tight.

Shared some amazing memories with you that I will cherish forever.”

Adam Harrison added: “Another amazing lad taken too soon. RIP Matty Bermingham.

Surge in expats applying to vote in EU Referendum

The announcement of the date for the Referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union has triggered a surge in the numbers of British expats wanting to register to vote.

Latest figures show thousands of British nationals who live overseas are now going to www.gov.uk/registerto-vote in order to be able to have their say on 23 June. The average daily rate of online registrations by Britons abroad has quadrupled from an average of just over 600 per day before the announcement of the referendum date last weekend, to more than 2600 per day since then.

If you have been on the UK electoral roll within the last 15 years, you are eligible to vote.

Former residents of England, Scotland and Wales can quickly register at www.gov.uk/ register-to-vote. If you last lived in Northern Ireland then you need to download an overseas voter application form from the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland, at www.eoni.org. uk.

3. If you last lived in England, Scotland or Wales, go to www.gov.uk/ register-to-vote and fill in your data. All you need is your National Insurance number, passport details and date of birth. (Even if you don’t have an NI number, you can still register).

4. Choose how you want to vote – by post, proxy, or even in person if you will be in Britain on polling day. If you choose to vote by post, ballot forms will be despatched about one month ahead, giving you time to receive, complete and return your vote.

5. If you were last registered to vote in Northern Ireland, download an overseas voter application form from the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland, at www.eoni.org.uk. You can choose to vote by proxy or in person, but not by post.

6. Do register now, don’t wait until the last minute and miss the deadline. Thousands of expatriates are already doing signing up. If you wait, you may miss your chance to have your say.

7. Just as in the UK, you need to register annually. So if you registered as an overseas voter for last year’s General Election, you still need to renew ahead of the EU referendum.

8. Out of 283,000 Britons officially resident in Spain, just 11,000 were registered to vote in last year’s UK General Election. Many British expats could miss out on their say in the EU referendum, so tell your friends to register too.

Insular ring road won’t solve jams ORNELLA Chacon, the Canaries’ Minister of Public Works and Transport, believes the proposed insular ring road is not the solution to traffic

jams on the TF-1 North motorway or the TF-5.

She says the plan for a new relief road is “one of a few actions that, as a whole, we are con-

sidering to avoid the suffering of Tenerife drivers. We need to alleviate this bottleneck.”

According to the Government’s estimates,

cars from Adeje to Santiago del Teide account for 5,000 cars daily at this bottleneck. But these figures do not include vehicles being driven during the peak

rush-hours, between 5-8pm.

The Minister stressed: “The priority is not so much to take away the load of the TF-5, but for people

earning a better quality of life.

“We need to reduce the time behind the wheel, when people are moving between the North and South.”

Island’s frozen assets LAST week’s heavy snowfall is still causing problems at La Palma’s Roque de los Muchachos observatory, and work has been suspended because the telescopes remain frozen.

Although temperatures have risen, and, of course, it is no longer snowing, the island has not exactly been bathed in sunshine, so the instruments will still be out of order for a good few days yet.

And there is nothing the observatory officials can do because they must allow a “natural thaw” of the telescopes.

In Tenerife, main roads leading to Teide remain closed and the public are advised to not travel towards the mountain, no matter tempting it is to play in the snow!

Relax? You have to cough up

IT has been another week of coughing and sneezing with this awful bug, and I’ve been driving the office crazy.

I swear the staff have bought the world’s supply of antiseptic wipes.

Every time I cough or sneeze, they reach for the wet-wipes. The office has never been so clean!

And I’m one of “those” when ill. Mr Grumpy has nothing on yours truly. The cakes are on me when I’m feeling better.

My mood wasn’t lightened with the news that a friend of mine has retired this week. At the age of 41. And before you ask, No, he isn’t a rich sportsman!

Retired at 41. It sounds like the dream, but is it really? I’ve been throwing this around all week in my head. Normally at 3am, when I’ve raced to the bathroom for the one-millionth time.

In America, the average adult retires at 61; in Australia, it rises slightly to 63, while the average Japanese worker retires at 69.

Some would say this shows their work ethic.

In Luxembourg, the average retirement age is 57. Bankers love the free time, it seems.

So if you could fill the time, what would you need to do to retire now, or in, say, five years?

Experts will tell you that to retire properly, you need to be debt-free.

And you also need savings equal to about 25 times the income you wish to achieve in retirement.

If that were possible, and it’s a big “if” for many, I wondered how it would still be achievable.

A pal of mine, an expert in these matters, told me the key to planning for retirement is to have a plan and stick to it.

For example, start economising. Work out a way to pay, gradually, less on housing, day-today budgets, and “luxuries” such as cars and holidays.

Limit the amount of disposable cash. Ask yourself, do you really need to go out at the weekend? Oh, and pay off the mortgage because property costs can be up to 40% of all your outgoings.

So it seems you have me for a while longer. Unless this bug gets worse.

James Wade, ranked world No.6, returns to defend his title, along with old foe Simon Whitlock, a two-time World Championship runner-up.

It’s a great night and, of course, we raise a lot of money for charity.”

For Wade, it’s a nice break from the Premier League, which is in full swing right now.

“It’s something I enjoy every year,” he said.

“Tenerife in the middle of winter! I loved beating Simon last

year, and I’m sure I will do so again.”

Fellow Premier League star Thornton, who makes his Tenerife début this year, said: “The lads have told me

all about it and I can’t wait! It’s a proper event and we all want to win, so I guarantee the darts will be of the highest order.”

Cabildo’s cyber attack THE Cabildo’s computer systems has suffered two cyber attacks in recent months, to the annoyance of staff there.

Although they did not cause serious consequences of data loss, there were problems on the websites, especially at peak times. And internal emails were also affected.

Felix Fariña, Insular director of Communication Technologies and Information, said no major problems were experienced. The first incident occurred last October and the second in December, and the

Minister stressed the importance of passwords saying: “In the second case, the hackers accessed an email whose password was 1234. It’s simple when it is that easy.

They blocked the email server of tenerife.es but no information was lost with these two episodes.”

Farina added: “Cyber security is everyone’s business, and everyone must work together in areas such as, for example, choosing passwords, since many attacks are initiated by this method.”

Black-pepper imports Judge clears hit by a spot of bother the boo-boys A COMPLAINT from a citizens’ group about booing and whistling during the Spanish national anthem before last year’s Spanish football’s King’s Cup final in Barcelona has been dismissed by the Spanish High Court in Madrid.

And although King Felipe VI was at the match, Judge Fernando Andreu ruled that rowdy spectators at the Nou Camp had committed no crime before the BarcelonaAthletico Madrid showdown on 30th May. Yet the High Court’s public prosecutor had given his blessing for an investigation, saying it was an attack on the monarchy and Spain’s symbols and emblems.

The lawsuit was filed by Manos Limpias, an obscure right-wing labour union which has filed

TAXI drivers from all over Spain descended on Madrid last Thursday in protest at plans to liberalise the transport sector for passengers.

Some 2,000 drivers and their relatives 5,000 people in all, according to organisers marched to the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) headquarters in downtown Madrid.

Spanish Taxi Federation Fedetaxi, which organised the march, handed CNMC representatives a letter asking for the agency to defend Spain’s taxi drivers.

“It is serious for a public agency such as the CNMC, which

numerous complaints in high-profile, public-corruption cases.

In his ruling, which can be appealed, Judge Andreu said a similar incident had occurred in 2009 during the King’s Cup final in Valencia.

But the High Court prosecutor believed no crime was committed, and the judge also dismissed the case. Andreu wrote.

“Freedom of expression is one of the strongest pillars in a democracy.”

The Catalonia region, in which the match was played, has long been engaged in a struggle for independence, while Athletic play in Bilbao, part of the Basque Country, which has, historically, also sought to break away from Spain.

Fans of both teams will know that Barcelona won 3-2.

SPAIN is taking special measures to control blackpepper imports to this country after a warning about the high residue of carbendazim fungicide found in some batches of Vietnamese pepper.

The fungicide is used in a number of crops to help control the growth of unwanted fungus and mold. But it is also regarded as a fungicide of major concern because of its suspected hormone - disrupting effects.

It has been highlighted by Friends of the Earth as one of its “filthy four” pesticides because it could

be harmful to human health and the environment.

The warning was issued by the European Commission (EC), according to the Viet Nam’s Trade Office in Spain.

The Trade Office said the warning came after Maltese authorities detected high carbendazim residue in Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company’s batches of black pepper imported to the country.

Initially, Spain will retain its special control measures until there are official quality inspection guarantees from exporting countries and/or the result of inspections for the next imports that reach quality standards.

Otherwise, the special measures will remain until the EC issues

general control measures for its all-member countries, said the Trade Office.

For Phuc Sinh Company’s export black pepper, Spain will seize suspected samples of batches to analyse amounts of carbendazim, and retain all shipments until they receive official results about the level of carbendazim in the products.

Spud moth’s had its chips Obama set for talks in Cuba

BARACK Obama will travel to Cuba on 21st March for talks with Cuban President Raúl Castro during a two-day trip there.

“I’ll travel to Cuba to advance our progress and efforts that can improve the lives of the Cuban people,” said the US President on his Twitter account.

“We still have differences with the Cuban government that I will raise directly. America will always stand for human rights around the world.”

The trip, part of a broad, multi-nation tour of Latin America, is expected to be a highpoint towards ending 56 years of chilled relations between Havana and Washington.

The two countries began building a framework to initiate a process of “normalising” diplomatic relations in 2014.

Last July, Cuba and the United States formally established relations. A month later, John Kerry became the first US Secretary of State in more than half-a-century to visit Cuba, where he helped inaugurate the reopening of the US Embassy in Havana.

But Obama hopes to make history by becoming the first sitting US President in more than 80 years to travel to the island.

In 1928, US Republican President Calvin Coolidge visited Havana to speak at the Sixth Annual International Conference of American States, which would later become the Organisation of American States (OAS).

Former US President Jimmy Carter also visited Havana in 2002, but he was no longer in the White House.

In an interview with Yahoo! News last December, Obama said he wanted to go to Cuba, but only if the conditions were right.

“If I go on a visit, part of the deal is that I get to talk to everybody,”

he said. “I’ve made very clear in my conversations directly with President Castro.”

Outside pressure on Congress has been building to lift the fivedecade-old trade embargo, and this will be the third time the two Presidents will meet, face to face.

But even though the trip will capture the world’s attention, there are some political risks involved. Obama will arrive in Cuba to try to cement his presidential legacy, but without accomplishing what has been a sore point between the two sides.

Cuba has said that full diplomatic relations cannot be achieved unless the US economic and trade embargo is lifted.

True, Obama has eased some restrictions for US citizens travelling to Cuba and agreed to allow direct flights between both nations.

But it would take an act of Congress to lift the 55-year-plus embargo.

There have been various bills filed in the House of Representatives calling for the end of sanctions. But for the moment, its sponsors do not have enough support to push them through their respective committees.

And Obama could fail to accomplish full diplomatic relations with the Communist island government.

American air-carriers have already filed their paperwork to obtain licences to begin flights to Cuba by the autumn.

Holiday cruise-lines have also submitted their petitions to include Cuba as one of their stops in the Caribbean.

On Thursday, US Trade Secretary Penny Pritzker and Cuban Trade Minister Rodrigo Malmierca will finalise their second round of talks, aimed at pushing for bilateral trade.

While they both said at the beginning of their meeting that there were a lot of issues to be discussed, the two officials acknowledged there was also pressure by US businesses, who do not want to miss any opportunities in Cuba.

Obama’s trip there will, no doubt, become a major issue in the US presidential race.

While some candidates, such as Republican senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, both of Cuban origin, have criticised Washington’s policy toward Havana, the issue has mostly been ignored in debates and campaign speeches.

But the candidates are aware that there is broad support by US citizens for proper relations with Havana.

And they also know how unpopular, not to say impossible, it would be to halt the process initiated by Obama.

THE Canarian Government, Tenerife Cabildo and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment have finally agreed a deal that will see the export of a popular potato.

The European Union (EU), and international organisation Protocol, have given the green light to the export of the “Papas Antiguas de Canarias”.

This follows the eradication of the Guatemalan moth, which has been decimating potato crops. This Tenerife product can now be exported around Europe, after stocks were released from quarantine.

The foreign sale of “Papas Antiguas”, or “Papas Bonitas” as they are also known in the Canaries, will begin immediately.

At the meeting of the three institutions were Narvay Quintero, Canaries’ Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water, Jesus Morale, the Cabildo’s Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and Carlos Cabanas, Agriculture and Food Secretary of State.

They were satisfied the administrations had submitted scientific documentation which had met the required standards.

Quintero said: “This project required research, plus collaboration between the regional government, the Canarian Institute of

Agricultural Research (ICIA), and the Rural Management Company (GMR).

“The Tenerife Corporation and the University of La Laguna (ULL) were also involved, and this will bring many benefits to the islands, creating an important opportunity for the export of potatoes. There is a high demand from abroad.”

The Guatemalan moth, introduced into the Canary Islands from South America at the end of the last century, has caused major problems with the potato crop, which is normally sent to high-end catering and gourmet markets, especially in mainland Spain and Europe.

Burt sales abroad had been prohibited since last November.

A kilo of “Papas Bonitas”, selling for around 25 euros, is a highlylucrative trade for the islands.

But only when the moths stay away!

Loro Parque boosts endangered parrots LORO Parque Foundation has transferred nine rare Lear´s Macaws to Brazilian conservation institutions.

The operation is hailed as the biggest repatriation ever in the history of conservation efforts for this endangered parrot.

The Foundation was entrusted with six of these parrots by the Brazilian Government in the mid-2000s, in the hope of increasing its numbers. And how the birds have prospered.

Loro Parque Foundation’s efforts since 2006 to conserve this species - identified in the catalogues as being of borderline extinc-

tion - have been excellent. And no wonder because the reproduction rate has increased significantly, enhancing the Foundation’s population from four to 36 specimens in just 10 years.

Various international organisations on Wednesday, including a representative of Loro Parque Foundation, were in Brazil to

welcome the parrots.

In addition, local awareness campaigns have taken off in Brazil to educate the communities about the species’ habitats, and the need to take care of its environment.

Of special importance is the responsible use of the licuri palm tree, which is the main source of food for these rare macaws.

The evergreen Ford, who plays Han Solo in the films, said: “Star Wars is, for lack of a better word ... awesome” “I’m so blessed that I had the opportunity to be a part of it - to walk in these iconic locations.”

Fans will be able to experience some of the same locations as Ford, who added: “And soon, you’ll be able to do that as well. Not in a galaxy far, far away, but in a place close to home.”

Filming is under way on Star Wars: Episode VIII, and security is reportedly so tight that studio bosses are flying drones above the set to stop other drones from taking and leaking photos.

Shooting has taken place in Skellig Michael, Ireland, where Episode VII finished and, from 9th March, it will move to Dubrovnik in Croatia.

Apple won’t bow to FBI demands

Britain’s greatest pilot hit the heights of glory CAPTAIN Eric Brown, the Royal Navy’s most decorated pilot - and acknowledged as Britain’s finest of all - has died at the age of 97.

He passed away on Sunday at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill following a short illness, said his family.

The wartime veteran, who was born in Edinburgh and later moved to Sussex, flew 487 types of aircraft and held three Guinness World Records in a 31year career.

He was the first Naval pilot to land a jet on an aircraft carrier, and he held the record for the most carrier deck-landings at 2,407.

Capt Brown, known as Winkle, survived being sunk by a U-boat in 1941 and, later, being shot at and injured by a German long-range bomber.

He was fluent in German and at the end of World War II, he saw the liberation of BergenBelsen concentration

camp. Later, he was able to question some of the most prominent Nazis, including Hermann Goring and Heinrich Himmler.

First Sea Lord Admiral Sir George Zambellas, who said Capt Brown’s death was a huge loss, added: “The Fleet Air Arm may have lost one of its finest and best-known pilots, but British aviation has lost something even greater - the most accomplished test pilot of his generation and, perhaps, of all time, and a huge advocate of military aviation.”

British astronaut Tim Peake tweeted from space: “So sad to hear that Capt Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown has died - to my mind, the greatest test pilot who has ever lived.

A true inspiration.”

Paul Beaver, for many years a friend of Capt Brown, said: “For a man who had achieved so much in one lifetime, he was modest and self-effacing, yet always ready to help.”

Capt Brown is survived by his partner, Jean Kelly Brown, and son, Glen.

MICROSOFT founder Bill Gates feels the row between Apple and the FBI over access to a dead murderer’s phone should start a debate about US Government requests for data.

The Gates company, which supplies the technology for Apple appliances, has refused FBI demands to unlock the iPhone of Syed Rizwan Farook, who, with his wife, killed 14 people in December last year.

Microsoft is adamant the FBI order is “dangerous and unprecedented”. And Gates told the Financial Times: “This is a specific case where the government

is asking for access to information.

“They are not asking for some general thing; they are asking for a particular case.”

He also said the case was similar to requests made regularly to phone companies and banks for information.

And in a BBC interview, he reiterated his view that the issue came down to a debate about whether governments can get at data they use to protect citizens.

“Should governments be able to access information at all, or should they be blind?” he queried. “That’s essentially what we are talking about.”

Microsoft itself has not commented formally on the row between the FBI and Apple. But when pushed on the issue, Microsoft referred to a statement issued

by the Reform Government Surveillance group, of which it is a member.

That statement is on Apple’s side, saying: “Technology companies should not be required to build in back doors to the technologies that keep their users’ information secure.”

Now, though, the US Department of Justice is asking for Apple’s help to get at data on iPhones relevant to more than a dozen separate investigations.

The Wall Street Journal said the cases came from several different criminal investigations, and that data locked on the handsets would help law-enforcement.

None of the cases is believed to be related to terrorism, and many involved older iPhones lacking the stronger security protections found

on current devices.

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg said he was “sympathetic” to Apple’s stance in the row.

The horrific San Bernadino attack by Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, left 14 people dead and 22 injured.

The couple then perished in a police shootout. In a statement published last Sunday, FBI director James Comey stressed that its demand for access to the data on the phone was “about the victims and justice”.

Just over half of all Americans, when asked whether Apple should unlock the phone, believed it should comply with the FBI’s order, according to a US survey.

Of those questioned, 51% said Apple should respond positively, 38% said it should resist the call, and 11% had no opinion.

On Monday, Apple boss Tim Cook sent a letter to the firm’s employees about the row, saying its refusal was about a broader civil rights issue and not just this individual case.

It also called for the US government to set up a government panel on encryption to look into the ways law enforcement can ask for access to data.

Russians deny they Bombed hospitals

THE Russians “categorically reject” accusations of war crimes over the bombing of Syrian hospitals, insisting there is no proof.

As many as 50 people were killed in missile attacks on at least four hospitals and a school in rebel-held areas of northern Syria on Monday.

The UN said “intentionally-directing attacks” at hospitals and medical units would constitute a war crime.

But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “Those who make such statements are not capable of backing them up with proof,” Monday’s strikes, said the UN, hit two hospitals, including one for

mothers and babies, and a school sheltering internally-displaced people in Azaz, near the Turkish border. Thirty-four people were killed and dozens wounded.

Two hospitals were also struck in Maarat al-Numan, further south in Idlib province, killing at least 12 people and wounding around 36.

One of the hospitals in Maarat al-Numan was supported by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).

It was reportedly struck by four missiles in what MSF said was “directtargeting” over the course of 90 minutes.

Mego Terzian, MSF France President, told Reuters: “Either the Syrian Government or Russia” was responsible.

But the Kremlin’s Peskov told the BBC that the only proof Russia would accept from the ground “comes from the Syrian authorities”. He said their evidence “shows the opposite”.

Riad Haddad, Syrian Ambassador to Moscow, previously said the US was to blame, a claim dismissed by the Pentagon as “patently false”.

International humanitarian law bans any attack on patients and medical personnel or, indeed, any attack on medical facilities, unless they are used for military purposes.

However, even if they are identified as a military objective, such a target must not be attacked if the scale of col-

lateral civilian casualties is likely to be disproportionate to the military gain Indiscriminate attacks are prohibited The strikes came days after world powers - including Russia - agreed to work towards a selective truce in Syria shortly.

Staffan de Mistura, UN envoy to Syria, met Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem on Tuesday to discuss, among other things, one of the key priorities of the truce: “unhindered, humanitarian access to all besieged areas”.

Earlier, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, in his first comments on Friday’s “cessation of hostilities” plan, said it was doubtful all parties

would be putting down their weapons within a week.

A Turkish official said on Tuesday that his country would back a ground operation in Syria, “but only with our international allies”.

The official told reporters in Istanbul: “There is not going to be a unilateral military operation from Turkey to Syria.”

Turkey has been watching, with growing alarm, the fighting on the Syrian side of its borders - accusing Russian war planes of violating its airspace and warning against recent Kurdish successes.

Turkey views the Kurdish YPG militia as allied to the outlawed PKK, which has carried

out a decades-long campaign for autonomy in Turkey.

The YPG is part of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) which captured Tal Rifaat, a key town in Aleppo province, and is headed towards Azaz.

Meanwhile, Syrian government forces - backed

by Russian air power reportedly continue to make advances around the northern city of Aleppo, capturing the villages of Ahras and Misqan on Tuesday.

Almost five years of civil war in Syria have led to the deaths of more than 250,000 people.

And more than 11 million people have been displaced.

Who’s rattled their cage?

PLANS to establish a colony of venomous, timber rattlesnakes on an island in Massachusetts have sparked fear among residents.

The endangered snakes would inhabit Mount Zion, a 1,400 acre island in the Quabbin Reservoir, some 65 miles from Boston.

But rattlesnakes can swim, and people have expressed concerns that the island is connected to the mainland by two narrow cause-

ways.

Tom French, of the state’s Fisheries and Wildlife Division, has received several emails and phone calls from people worried that the snakes could escape.

“People are afraid we’re going to put snakes in a place of public use, and that they are going to breed like rabbits and spread over the countryside and kill everybody,” he said.

There are about 200 timber rattlesnakes left in five areas of Massachusetts and, said Mr French, loss of habitat and human-caused

deaths could wipe them out.

A handful of the snakes will be raised at Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, and then placed on the island when they are mature enough to survive in the wild.

The project has been endorsed by Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker.

Rattlesnakes are timid and strike only when provoked. And there have been no documented rattlesnakebite deaths in Massachusetts since colonial times, says Mr French.

Meningitis B vaccine supplies not so vital THE imbalance between supply and demand for the vaccine to counteract meningitis B has caused real problems among parents in the Canary Islands, leading to fear.

But according to the Canarian Society of Paediatrics, it is unwarranted fear because reports of meningitis B in Spain is extremely low.

In fact, the trend is downward. The 20132014 season saw the lowest incidences in 13 years, with just over 0.2 cases per 100,000 people.

Yet the Advisory Committee on Immunisation recommends in its 2016 immunisation schedule that vaccine should become more available in Spain.

Luis Ortigosa, President of the Canarian Society of Paediatrics

in Santa Cruz, who is also on the Advisory Committee on Immunisation, said that 30,000 vaccines against meningitis B will come to the islands shortly.

“The Ministry of Health has bought them from Portugal and they will be here very soon,” said Ortigosa.

“They are currently being relabelled.”

But he predicts that these doses “will be exhausted because Spain is a vaccinator”.

The underlying problem of the vaccine shortage against meningitis B is that paediatricians

recommended vaccines over a calendar, so they are purchased slowly.

And they’re not free or cheap.

Parents who choose to follow the recommendations of doctors and vaccinate their little ones will see 204 euros leaving their bank account.

However, in the Canary Islands, that is reduced to 102.4 euros a dose.

But Ortigosa stresses: “Families should not go crazy. There is no urgency to vaccinate against meningitis B as there are only sporadic cases.”

How chocolate may help your sex drive...

REGULAR chocolate treats may help improve your sex drive and other areas of your life, which is fantastic news for those who crave the confection.

According to a recent study, published in the journal Appetite, eating chocolate was found to be associated with cognitive performance (the ability to utilise the knowledge acquired by mental processes in our brains) “irrespective of other dietary habits”.

Researchers looked at data collected during an earlier study in which residents of Syracuse, New York, were measured for dietary intake and risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

They were also given a series of tests, designed to measure cognitive function.

“More frequent chocolate consumption was significantly associated with better performance on tests, including Visual-Spatial Memory and Organisation, Working Memory, Scanning and Tracking, Abstract Reasoning, and the Mini-Mental State Examination,” said researchers.

They suggested that regular chocolate intake could help “protect against normal, age-related, cognitive decline.”

They also noted that chocolate had, historically, if not scientifically, been used to “reduce fever, treat childhood diarrhoea, promote strength before sexual conquests, decrease ‘female complaints’, increase breast-milk production, encourage sleep and to clean teeth.”

On a more solid scientific footing, contemporary studies have found that chocolate is good for the heart and circulation, reduces risk of stroke, reduces cholesterol, and protects the skin against sun damage.

One study found that it could improve your maths’ skill, and even help you lose weight.

According to neuroscientist Will Clower, a small square of good chocolate melted on the tongue 20 minutes before a meal triggers the hormones in the brain that say “I’m full”, cutting the amount of food you consume subsequently.

And finishing a meal with the same small trigger could reduce subsequent snacking.

Cost of olive oil is bound to soar A DISASTROUS drought in Spain, together with Italy’s bacteria-ridden plants, have devastated their olive production significantly.

And experts are predicting that the price of olive oil could rise by as much as 20% in the next few weeks.

The latest Mediterranean olive harvest will end this month, and suppliers warn there is unlikely to be any let-up

from a worldwide shortage of olives and rising prices.

The number of olives from the most recent harvest was not enough to produce the average quantity of oil bought in the last four years, making shortages inevitable.

The wholesale price of Italian extra virgin olive oil has risen by 14% in UK supermarkets, while the same product from Spain is up a further 7%. And wholesale price increases are forecast to filter down to shop shelves.

Olive oil currently costs from around £3.50 a litre in supermarkets, and Lisa Mullins, marketing manager of Filippo Berio UK, said: “Typically, olives are a cyclical plant. They have a good year, a bad year and a good year. And while a weak harvest is usually not a cause for concern, 2014-15 was a disaster.”

As well as Spain’s drought, Italian olive production has been hit by an outbreak of the Xylella fastidiosa bacteria, which has infected more than one million

trees. Both problems contributed to a monumental, worldwide shortage of more than 400,000 tonnes at the end of the 2014-15 growing season.

The Spanish crop has recovered this year, but the spread of Xylella fastidiosa shows no clear signs of subsiding.

The International Olive Oil Council forecasts final global production figures for the 2015-16 harvest will be below the average consumption level of the past four years, making price increases inevitable.

Extraordinary Lee shunned limelight HARPER Lee, one of the most celebrated authors of all thanks to her classic, everlasting book, To Kill A Mockingbird, has died at the age of 89.

It was her one and only book … until last year’s once-in-a-lifetime, manuscript discovery of Go Set A Watchman, which she wrote in the

mid-Fifties and became a 2015 best-seller.

Publisher Penguin Random House posted a message on Twitter saying: “Rest in peace, Harper Lee.” She was the youngest of four children and was born in Monroeville, Alabama in 1926. She studied at the state’s University from 1945 to 1949 before moving to New York, where she began writing fiction in her spare time. Lee eventually signed with

an agent in 1956. To Kill a Mockingbird is regarded the world over as an American literary classic, selling 40 million copies worldwide.

Despite the global success of Mockingbird and the honours and accolades she reaped, Lee lived a quiet life.

She was more than reluctant to be interviewed by the press, refusing all requests, and the decision to publish her second book was distinctly controversial.

For much of her adult life, she travelled between New York and Monroeville, where she lived with her sister Alice, and conceded precious little information about her private life.

Her cousin Richard Williams, who ran a chemists in Monroeville, once said: “I asked her one time why she never wrote another book. She told me, ‘When you have a hit like that, you can’t go anywhere but down’. ”

More people find Energy to switch COMPETITION in the Energy market is hotting up, which is proving a good thing for UK householders, with 15% more people switching providers last year.

The Ofgem regulator said that 6.1m gas and electricity accounts had been transferred, which was around 800,000 more than in 2014.

The news was welcomed by consumer groups, Ofgem’s Rachel Fletcher saying: “It’s encouraging to see switching levels at their highest for four years.”

The big-six energy companies have all cut prices for their gas customers this year by at least 5.1%, but there have been no reductions to electricity tariffs.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), whose report

Farewell trumpet toot from Joey, ‘The Lips’ JOHNNY Murphy, the Irish actor famed for his role as trumpet player Joey ‘The Lips’ Fagan in The Commitments, has died.

Tributes were paid to the legendary actor, said to be in his early 70s, as news of his death hit social media.

Actress Maria DoyleKennedy posted on her Twitter page: “Johnny Murphy.

Gentleman”, while Irish Titanic actor Liam Tuohy said it was “so sad”, adding: “RIP Johnny Murphy.

Oscar-winner Glen Hansard, echoing the comments, paid his tribute to the “great Johnny Murphy”, saying: “A beautiful man, and a true gent. Bless you Johnny.”

The Lips proved to be one of the most popular characters in the hit film by Alan Parker, but the director originally wanted Van Morrison or Rory Gallagher for the role. But he went with Murphy in the end.

He saw him as a mentor to the much-younger, inexperienced cast, which included Glen Hansard, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Andrew Strong and Angelina Ball.

Snake bite kills poor girl of six A TRAGIC, sixyear-old Australian girl, who stood on a brown snake at her home and was bitten, died last Saturday.

It is understood that neither the youngster nor her family were said to have been unaware she had been bitten until it was too late.

She was bitten on the Friday near Walgett,

around 400 miles northwest of Sydney, and was rushed to a local hospital when she was almost comatose.

Doctors gave her an anti-venom serum before arranging for her to be flown to Sydney Children’s Hospital on a life-support machine.

Sadly, her condition deteriorated and she was transferred back to Walgett Hospital, where she died on Saturday.

Local Deputy Mayor Jane Keir, a registered nurse, told the Sydney Morning Herald: “I believe the family didn’t know she’d been bitten and, by the time they’d realised, she was comatose.

“The little girl could have been on the edge of Sydney and the result would have been the same.”

Australian fatalities as a result of snakebites are extremely rare, de-

spite it housing 20 of the world’s 25 deadliest snakes.

There are about 3,000 snakebite cases in the country each year, with 300-500 needing antivenom treatment.

Official figures show that just two people a year prove fatal. And the eastern brown snake causes more deaths than any other species, according to the Australian Museum.

Pope slams ‘dealers of death’ in Mexico POPE Francis, on a five-day tour of Mexico, told a mammoth outdoor audience to “believe in God and shun the devil” in a sermon against drug-traffickers.

The Pontiff told 300,000 people, on a field at the edge of Mexico City, to turn the country into a land of opportunity, and not a place where young people are “destroyed at the hands of the dealers of death”.

His talk came as an official in the Mexican state of Sinaloa revealed that the bodies of 13 people were found in a rural area – victims of the latest in a series of violent, multiple killings.

Pope Francis elected to speak of his abhorrence of drug-trafficking in Ecatepec, a povertystricken suburb of 1.6 million people, where drug violence, kidnappings and ganglandstyle killings are rife.

In a clear reference to the drug lords who dominate the city’s streets, the Pope focused on the danger posed by the Devil.

“Only the power of the word of God can defeat him,” said the Pope at the biggest of his scheduled events in Mexico. “Let us get it into our heads: with the devil, there is no dialogue.”

He urged Mexicans to convert their country into a land of opportunity, “where there will be no need to emigrate in order to dream; no need to be exploited in order to work; no need to make the despair and poverty of many, the opportunism of a few; a land that will not have to mourn men and women, young people and children who are destroyed at the hands of the dealers of death”.

Many in entranced audience welcomed his words, 56-year-old housewife Ignacia Godinez, saying: “He’s come to Ecatepec because we need him here.

“Kidnappings, rob-

beries and drugs have all increased, and he is bringing comfort.

His message will reach those who need it so that people know we, the good people, outnumber the bad.”

Since 2006, an estimated 100,000 people have been killed and 27,000 have disappeared in gangland violence in Mexico.

The Mexican government last year issued an alert over the killings of women in Ecatepec and other parts of the state.

More than 10,000 police, soldiers and members of the presidential guard were assigned to protect the Pope’s motorcade, and Mass.

His gruelling schedule

looked as though it was having an effect on him on Saturday, when the 79-year-old appeared to nod off at an evening service.

On another occasion he lost his balance and fell into a chair. However, on Sunday he appeared much livelier.

During a visit to a children’s hospital later that day, he was even given a hand-made Valentine’s Day card by a young, wheelchairbound girl.

FOLLOWING last Friday’s announcement that the date of the EU In/Out Referendum will be 23rd June, the pound took a substantial hit, with its biggest loss in 11 months.

Then, hot on the heels, came London Mayor Boris Johnson’s announcement that he would be supporting the “Out” Campaign, which saw the pound falling to a seven-year low against the dollar.

Last week, pollsters put a probability of 35% on a Brexit and forecast a negative impact in the short-term if Britain left the EU. This will be the first vote on British membership since 1975 and, should the vote to leave be successful, the UK

The recent markets’ volatility doesn’t look as though it will go away with the Referendum such a hot topic.

And as a result, it ap-

pears unlikely there will be an interest-rate increase before then.

Forecasters on sterling all agree that the prospect of Britain leaving the EU is what’s damaging the pound. But in Bloomb-

erg’s sterling survey, they predict a decline of between 8% to 17%, these predictions based on Britain voting to remain in the European Union.

‘Let shops stay open longer on Sundays’

A GROUP of 200 MPs and council leaders are lobbying for the rules to be relaxed on Sunday opening hours for shops in England and Wales

In a letter to the Sunday Telegraph, they said that such a move would increase spending on Sundays, and would also lift job prospects and help shops compete with online firms.

But the shopworkers’ union, though backing British Government plans to devolve Sunday trading laws to local councils, said the majority of its members opposed extended trading hours on the Sabbath.

The group, including

the cross-party British Infrastructure Group (BIG) of MPs, wrote: “The world’s times and attitudes have changed since Sunday trading laws were last updated, in 1994.

“Our high streets and physical retailers have been left trying to compete with 24/7 online shopping, a task which is made harder by a shortened trading day at the weekend, just when many families might hope to go shopping together.”

In England and Wales, shops with over 280sq/m, or 3,000sq/ft in size can open their doors for just six consecutive hours between 10am-6pm. And retailers can be fined up to £50,000 if they break the rules.

There are no trading restrictions in Scotland, while in Northern

Ireland, shops can open for up to five hours between 1pm-6pm.

The letter supported a report by BIG, which backs the modernisation of “outdated retail law”.

The group, with more than 40 MPs, is led by former Conservative Party chairman Grant Shapps.

Its report argued that the trend across Europe is for “liberalising” Sunday trading laws, saying that changes on the continent resulted in a 7-9% net increase in employment.

The letter added: “Ultimately, we believe that the best way to determine whether large shops are open for longer than six hours on a Sunday is to hand this decision to local communities.

“It is for this reason that we back the pro-

posed change in England and Wales, which would update our trading laws for the 21st Century.”

Campaigners opposed to longer opening hours question whether the move would really benefit the High Street, pointing out that under the existing law, smaller traders are allowed to open for longer.

Last year, Chancellor George Osborne prom-

ised that councils and mayors would get the power to set Sunday trading laws in their areas.

Business Secretary Sajid Javid earlier this month said ministers planned to press ahead with the proposal, because the move would allow local authorities to “help struggling high streets”.

But it faces strong opposition in the Com-

mons, and retail union Usdaw believes the current trading hours “give everyone a little bit of what they want.

“Retailers can trade, customers can shop, staff can work; while Sunday remains a special day, different from other days, and shopworkers can spend some time with their family,” said General Secretary John Hannett.

Hospital People is a mockumentary set in the fictional Brimlington Hospital and debuts as part of the BBC Comedy Playhouse season. The show follows the lives of a collection of characters connected to the hospital in some way, all played by one man: Tom Binns!

Hospitals are mainly about the medical staff and the patients, but what about the other inhabitants?

Porters, hospital radio DJs, chaplains, hospital managers - you could call them ‘non-essential’ but they would all strongly disagree. Hospital People follows how the big decisions affect the little people. Inept hospital radio DJ Ivan Brackenbury is one of the star characters. Brackenbury creator Tom Binns plays multiple characters in the pilot, including ambitious hospital manager Susan Mitchell, overenthusiastic priest Father Kenny and serial hypochondriac patient Terry Boyle.

His psychic character Ian D Montfort, also familiar from his live shows here is reimagined as a spiritualist porter.

Executive producer Ash Atalla, of production company Roughcut, said: ‘The words “hospital” and “funny” are rarely seen together but for 30 minutes at least we hope to change that. Roughcut are delighted to be working under the spotlight of BBC One, the biggest comedy stage of them all.’

Hospital People also stars Harki Bhambra, Liz Kingsman, Mandeep Dhillon, Aidey Pugh and Maggie McCarthy. And Binns co-wrote the half-hour script with Matt Morgan.

A group of obnoxious friends struggle to survive the Stag weekend from hell in the Scottish Highlands, in this brand new threepart dark comic thriller.

Ian Telford (Jim Howick) is a 34 yearold secondary school teacher from Eastbourne who doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, doesn’t eat meat, disapproves of blood sports and knows very few people, if any, who went to private school.

The Getaway Car BBC1, 18.10 Dermot O’Leary hosts the fourth episode of The Getaway Car. In an action-packed competition, five couples will embark on a series of general knowledge and driving challenges in a bid to win £10,000.

In this week’s show mother and son, Ailsa and Thomas from Swansea, put their driving skills to the test she’s been driving for 20 years and although Thomas is yet to pass his test, he thinks he’s the better driver.

Someone who already knows he’s a decent driver is chauffeur James, taking part with his girlfriend Sophia.

Flying the pink flag this week are the self-proclaimed ‘two racey [sic] and glamorous blondes’ Diana and Jane, who loathe the idea of fitting the mould of the ‘older female driver stereotype’. At 54 and 68 they are ladies who lunch, but who are not afraid of speed.

Michael Gambon and Lindsay Duncan star as Sir Winston Churchill and Clementine Churchill in this feature length film, Churchill’s Secret Set during the summer of 1953, Churchill’s Secret tells a little known part of Winston Churchill’s great life story.

Having suffered a life-threatening stroke, which his inner circle conspired to hide from the public, the film charts the course of Winston’s remarkable recovery and investigates the strain that his great public service wrought upon his private life.

By now in his late 70s, Prime Minister for the second time and with his sights set on achieving peace with the Russians, the great war god Churchill falters at a public dinner. Confused and emotional, he appears to be entering his dotage – if not his demise.

Unsure if he will survive the weekend, his passionately loyal wife Clementine spirits him away to Chartwell, their private country residence.

In the darkest hours, Clemmie calls their children to his bedside. However, the crisis reveals deep divisions within the family. Just as it does within the Conservative party, as those waiting in the wings begin to whisper.

The press barons and politicians, unsure who could replace him as leader, agree to keep the situation a secret, an unprecedented event in modern British history.

But Winston won’t give up. With the help of Millie, a young and surprisingly spirited nurse, and to the bittersweet relief of Clementine, he lives to fight another day on the front line of international politics.

The Night Manager BBC1, 21.00

The second episode opens at Roper’s grand villa in Mallorca, where he and his entourage are preparing for a lavish meal on the island. However, following their dinner, the group are confronted by two robbers who kidnap Roper’s young son, Daniel. With a mysterious man lurking in the shadows, all is not what it seems.

We then flashback to six months earlier, where Pine and Burr meet in Zermatt to discuss how they can bring Roper down. As their plan begins to unfold, Pine leaves a trail of staged criminal activities for Roper to find, including stealing from Meisters Hotel and causing a stir in Devon by posing as a drug dealer. Will it be enough to gain Roper’s trust and infiltrate his close-knit group?

‘At home we’re used to being king of our castle, you’ve got your house, you’re doing your thing and you’re top of the food chain…There is something uniquely humbling about being out here and you are not top of the food chain any more.’ Davina McCall In this brand new four-part series, Davina McCall: Life at the Extreme, the television presenter travels to some of the hottest, coldest, deepest and wettest places on earth to discover how some of the most extraordinary animals on the planet survive in its most hostile environments.

From the hottest desert to the coldest snowdrift, from the wettest rainforest to deep below the ocean, amongst her many adventures Davina will run in the scorching sun alongside cheetahs, sample how polar bears cope in -30ºC temperatures and free dive in an ocean which is home to the whale that is able to sustain one breath of air for 90 minutes.

By living alongside local people, scientists, tribes and the animals themselves, Davina will test the limits of her own endurance and offer viewers an insight into just how extreme, extreme can be.

Davina begins her journey in Namibia, one of the hottest countries in the world, where from the desert dunes to the arid bush land, temperatures there can reach 50ºC degrees and years can pass without rainfall.

It is here that Davina comes face-to-face with one of the world’s most iconic predators, the cheetah, to find out how, as the fastest running animal on the planet, it deals with the heat as it reaches speeds of 70-miles-per-hour.

If a cheetah doesn’t catch their prey in the first 300-metres they’ll give up. They’re simply not designed to keep running in such heat.

Fast they may be, but endurance isn’t an option. Conversely, sweating keeps a human’s temperature down, meaning they have the ability to run desert marathons.

To test out this inherent difference, Davina bravely decides to race a cheetah: ‘Obviously I’m not going to be as fast as a cheetah, but I want to compare how the heat affects us both, when we’re running…My heart is pounding, I’m quite scared. Maybe this is not such a good idea after all…’

Brian takes Stewie’s pills and ends up writing a 2000-page proposal for a fantasy series to pitch to author George R.R. Martin at a book convention. Meanwhile, when Quagmire demonstrates his cooking skills, everyone suggests he apply for a job as the new host of the local cooking show. Peter goes with him to cheer him on, and ends up getting hired along with Quagmire as his “hilarious” sidekick. However, when Quagmire has had enough of his antics and fires him, the network gives him his own show. When an outraged Quagmire insists there isn’t room at the network for both of them, the two compete, Iron Chef-style, to determine which of them gets to keep their show.

Jeremy Kyle’s Emergency Room ITV, 14.00

In the 20 x 60’ series, Jeremy Kyle will meet a whole new range of patients with a variety of medical issues in his A&E unit studio.

Uncovering even more of the nation’s real life stories, Jeremy speaks candidly to patients with a new set of serious health concerns, from obesity to sexually transmitted diseases and addiction to tumours and pregnancy issues.

As in the first series, Jeremy will be joined by real doctors and nurses to assess their patients and make diagnoses. Lifting the lid on some of the nation’s life threatening and rare illnesses, all will be revealed from Jeremy Kyle’s Emergency Room.

In the first episode, Jeremy meets the first patients to enter his Emergency Room, including Michael, aged 67, who has a rare case of Elephantiasis, not seen in the UK for 60 years and 32 year old Lauren, who wants answers as to why her joints keep popping out - sometimes up to 4 times a day.

Three British companies rip up the rule book of recruitment and give staff the power to hire a new manager.

Will they make the right choice for the company and will the boss agree? In this episode, the boss of a Preston-based chocolate manufacturer gives his entire workforce the power to decide who will become its new business development manager.

The three candidates competing for the job think its him they need to impress. Instead, everyone in the company will secretly assess them in a series of workplace tasks designed to test the applicants in every corner of the company.

But as this unique week-long recruitment experiment continues, an upstairs/ downstairs split emerges between the sales team and two of the longest- serving workers on the factory floor. Will they finally agree on the candidate they believe can secure the company’s future?

It’s 1954, and just outside the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester, local vicar Sidney Chambers [James Norton] is enjoying a glorious picnic with his best friend, DI Geordie Keating [Robson Green], Geordie’s family, Sidney’s shy curate Leonard Finch [Al Weaver] and their grumpy housekeeper Mrs Maguire [Tessa Peake-Jones]. Walking home, their happy day is cut short when DC Phil Wilkinson [Lorne Macfadyen] arrests Sidney – and the charge is sexual assault.

Doting father Harding Redmond [Neil Morrissey] is the source of the accusation, horrified at the claims made in the diary of his teenage daughter, Abigail [Gracie Brooke], who has now gone missing, along with the diary itself. After being grilled by DCI Benson [David Troughton], Sidney sets out to prove his innocence, but not before the Archdeacon [Geoff McGivern] sends Sidney’s old friend Reverend Sam Milburn [Andrew Knott] over from the neighbouring parish to check up on him.

Questioning Abigail’s friends at the village youth club, Sidney discovers she had recently spent time with local photographer Daniel Marlowe [Oliver Dimsdale]. Sidney and Geordie discover Daniel’s studio is empty – except for the lifeless body of Abigail.

With Daniel missing, Sidney and Geordie talk to local teenager Gary Bell [Sam Frenchum], who had previously been accused by Abigail’s father of inappropriate behaviour toward her, as well as her family and friends. However, as more and more secrets begin to surface about Abigail’s life, it becomes clear that no one knew her as well as they thought. Only by finding her missing diary can Sidney and Geordie pinpoint exactly who was responsible for her death – but will the answer damage their friendship forever?

Xiaopeng agrees to help her and arranges a meeting for her with his father. He offers Mei a choice - one that will secure Ajun’s freedom but at a cost. Now they face a race against time to reach Beijing and a lawyer who can help them petition the Supreme Court to stop his execution.

Murder: The Third Voice BBC2, 21.00

When Rafe Carey’s body is washed up by the River Tweed, it looks like he’s drowned in a tragic accident on a day of extreme weather.

He and his brother-in-law Leo Durridge were swept away when the section of riverbank they were fishing from collapsed.

Leo fought his way to the shallows and is in hospital with cuts and bruises - Rafe wasn’t so lucky.

But when detective Corinne Evans investigates, she finds the cause of Rafe’s death isn’t drowning at all - he’s been stabbed through the heart, and Leo is the prime suspect.

While he claims that he and Rafe were the only ones by the river on that stormy day, but a witness says he heard three voices, and forensic examination of the scene reveals three sets of bootprints.

Leo’s wife Katrina is torn between love and loyalty for her embattled husband and grief for her beloved brother.

And now the end is…

By Jamie Droo THIS week, I find myself reminiscing about the many different reviews and articles I’ve had the great pleasure of writing over the last four years, covering so many performing artistes and events.

There are still so many to tell you about, but it’s always difficult to decide what or who to write about.

My inspiration is drawn from a plethora of talent, and an entertainment circuit on which I am personally involved and feel so passionate about.

This Island has given me a lifestyle that cannot be emulated anywhere in the world.

It has granted me a decade-and-a-half of worry-free work - and a mountain of priceless experience within the entertainment industry.

Here in Tenerife, entertainers can grow and become the best they can be. But, sadly, they can also fail miserably. The latter generally comes because the standard is so high that the wannabes generally have a short shelf-life on the Island.

Some arrive and, though popular on arrival, gaining work for a few months, their credibility as an artiste will soon crumble unless the “true pro” shines through.

This circuit is ruthless as well as rewarding. A good act will always find work, rain or shine, as do those who emerge from a background of entertainment and have worked stages elsewhere.

I have always found that the more successful acts are the ones who are able to command the stage and engage the audience with a little banter.

Audiences can sometimes be intimidating unless the performer

controls that stage with authority, through his/ her skills as an entertainer.

There are so many people working on the stages of Tenerife´s liveentertainment venues, but there’s only a small few who possess the ability to cover all aspects of entertainment well.

The different elements that define entertainment can be anything that holds an audiences attention for a set period. It could be something as simple as a flower-arranging demonstration, although this type of entertainment might not be appropriate in any bar on the Veronicas Strip.

But it could, perhaps, in Los Gigantes in the afternoons in order to draw an older crowd into the bar. It all boils down to the person who comes up with the ideas and then applies them, appropriately, to the venue.

I recall an early-evening format organised in

the venue where I am resident. It was thought up by the owners and I was asked to host it.

The Tenerife Chilli Farm came down at 7pm to host a demonstration of the various chillies grown here in Tenerife. I was asked to play host, but I was unsure about how this format would work.

Yet it actually turned out to be one of the most entertaining scenes at that time of the day in which I have had the pleasure of being involved.

The bar was packed as the audience watched contestants sit on the stage and eat chillies, which became progressively hotter after each round in the style of a “last-man- standing” game-show.

I’d have never dreamed it would be so successful. But it just goes to show that entertainment is not always about someone singing, playing an instrument or delivering the funniest of punchlines. It is

about so much more.

Those who spread their wings here are the ones who will inevitably fly. There are a few certainties in this business we all call “show,” and a couple always stand out in my mind: You will never stop learning as an entertainer. If an artiste feels he know everything there is to know about his craft, he is 100% deluded.

The second notable fact is that if you find an aspect of entertainment you enjoy, then nothing will ever feel like “work” again should you choose to do it as a job.

Personally, since arriving in Tenerife 16 years ago, nothing has felt like the hard graft I have done in the past.

I spent nine years in the British Army as a Vehicle Specialist before leaving the service life to pursue a career in entertainment.

All these years down the line and I find myself thinking how lucky I am to have the pleasure

of writing for a successful weekly publication about the very subject that gives me such a great lifestyle.

The friends I have gained and the many different artistes I have shared stages with have made this whole experience something I will always cherish.

It is with a heavy heart that, through other work commitments, I must say goodbye to my days of writing this page.

I would like to thank Chris Elkington, owner of Emcan Media, for believing in me in the first place, and Canarian Weekly Editor Ross Browning for his guidance and advice in structuring each article.

Yes, we all love Karaoke AFTER a year’s break from the competition, the first heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke got underway last Thursday.

The start of this fun competition, held for first time at the Queen Vic Pub in Los Cristianos, confirmed that residents and tourists alike really do love karaoke.

It was an excellent start to the competition, with contestants and audience getting behind the singers, despite the wet, chilly night.

There will be 15 heats in all, giving over 220 entrants a chance to reach the June final, at Showtime, Las Americas.

There, 15 finalists will compete for the 1,000euro cash prize along with the title of Winner - Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2016.

The first heat was evaluated by three judges: Kim, from the Queen Vic, and two

Oasis Fm representatives, who marked everyone out of a total of 50 points.

Oasis DJ Gordon Slayney, who will host all 15 heats and the Final, had the crowd clapping and cheering right from the start with the new 2016 introduction.

And the cheering didn’t stop all night, the audience fully supporting each and every singer in their quest to reach the grand final.

One thing that did not differ from the last Tenerife Loves Karaoke heat was the standard, which was just as high, if not higher. On any other night, four of the other singers would have had a serious chance of reaching the final After they had all performed, the judges retired to determine which three would go into the sing-off for the first Final place. And what a tough decision it was.

The eventual winner was Mauro Rodrigo Ferreira Da Silva, whose final song, The Music Of The Night,

stunned not only the judges with his voice and stage presence but also the audience.

All 15 venues have been announced and places are being filled.

One of the first times I ever went abroad was to Denmark, and I have since visited on many occasions. I absolutely adore the country - the people, scenery, customs and traditions.

Denmark’s famous, and beloved, writer of children’s tales, Hans Christian Anderson (of “The Emperor’s New Clothes’” fame), has a statue that gazes approvingly towards cyclists whizzing along his namesake Boulevard, and Tivoli Gardens, which is the world’s second-oldest amusement park.

Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen

This Copenhagen park is a must for all city visitors, young and old. It is just a few minutes’ walk from City Hall, and, with the Copenhagen Central Station as its nearest neighbour, it is easy to reach.

Tivoli Gardens, founded in 1843, has become a national treasure and an international attraction.

Fairy-tale-writer Andersen visited many times, as did Walt Disney and many other celebrities, who all fell in love with the Gardens.

Part of its secret is that there is something for everyone. The scenery is beautiful with exotic architecture, historic buildings and lush gardens. At night, thousands of coloured lights create a unique, fairytale atmosphere.

The rides are all designed to match Tivoli’s architecture and gardens. Some rides are wonderfully nostalgic.

Others will match the expectations of the keenest thrill-seekers, such as “The Vertigo”. It turns you upside-down at 100 km/h, and was voted Europe’s Best Ride in 2014.

The wooden Roller Coaster, built in 1914, is

Tivoli’s oldest, and mostpopular, ride. It is one of only seven worldwide roller-coasters which have a brakeman on board every train. Not that I am keen to ride on something that is over 100 years old!

In Tivoli Concert Hall, you can see the Dirty Dancing musical, which features some of Denmark’s finest dancers and actors. Tivoli Gardens also boasts an extensive programme of live-music events every day.

Every autumn, Tivoli Gardens is transformed into an enchanted Hallowe’en Universe, full of witches, pumpkins and lanterns.

And from mid-November until January, Tivoli dresses for Christmas and New Year, housing the most-magical Christ-

mas Universe and market in Copenhagen.

All rides and restaurants are also open during these seasons. One childhood memory which sticks in my mind is of Denmark having many “Christmas Shops”. They remain open throughout the year, selling delicate, festive decorations with a real Scandinavian feel.

Near the busy waterfront, a large memorial honours dock-workers.

Just beyond, the famous “Little Mermaid” perches on a rock, paying homage perhaps to Andersen’s most-beloved tale. No wonder crowds gather, many taking photos.

Amble along the waterfront and admire the modernistic Opera House. It’s free to enjoy the controversial architecture of the Henning-

Larsen-designed Copenhagen Opera House from the outside. But to see a performance inside costs up to £50 for a ticket in the stalls.

Cheap, standing tickets are available at every performance for around £11.90. The obvious trick, used by locals, is to enter with a standing ticket, and then find a free seat after the first act.

There are plenty of places to avoid the big-bucks entertainment, and to get the kids involved in the kind of hearty, freshair activities loved by the Danes.

Most fun is the Havnegade Promenade (on the street of the same name), where a series of trampolines, set into the walkway, provide ample opportunity for children (and adults) to bounce for free.

As a no-cost alternative to Legoland, the official Lego flagship shop on Vimmelskaftet has plenty of interactive opportunities, and some great, inspirational building schemes.

Hiring a bike is a must.

Wide, traffic-segregated bike lanes make navigating a breeze, even for

timid cyclists. Plenty of hotels provide free bicycles for guests, so check before you hire.

As the most-popular form of transport in the city, there are many other options to rent bicycles, even ones with a built-in GPS! Sample Denmark’s wonderful food, embrace the Danes’ friendliness, and fall in love with their country.

Believe me, I could write about Denmark all day. But don’t take my word for it, treat yourself to a mini-break with a difference.

Sugar tax could cut weight for millions

Adeje Chicken in Buzanada Restaurant Review

Maria’s fresh outlook!

WANT a wellpriced, excellent meal? Then pop into the familyrun, Adeje Chicken restaurant in Buzanada, because you will not be disappointed.

Bryan and his wife, Camila, look after the bar and the tables, while his mum, Maria, is in the kitchen, homecooking all the food from fresh.

Apart from chicken, she has introduced other meats on the menu, but not on set days.

During the lunch-hour, these meats are included on their competitively-priced menu-of-theday, which also includes a drink.

They are now open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but they close on Mondays. After we were seated, Bryan came immediately to take our drinks order.

We browsed the extensive menu, and chose to

start with home-made croquettes, plus a tomato-and-onion salad.

And, of course, Maria’s secret Ali Oli (garlic mayonnaise) recipe.

Obviously, chicken is the house speciality, and there are five varieties to choose from: spicy, garlic, honey and plain.

We tried a little of everything, and the exquisite sauces were all conjured up via Maria’s secret recipes. My favourite was the honey variety.

My colleague preferred the garlic, although we both enjoyed them all thoroughly. And the chicken wasn’t greasy, even though it had been deep-fried.

We had a plate of home-made chips, and also the typical, Canarian, “Arrugada” crinkle potatoes. We also tried some chips in cheese sauce. These were delicious - different, but definitely worth a try.

During our meal, lots of local workmen were eating at the bar, which

is normally a guarantee that the food is good and at a good price, or they wouldn’t be there!

The restaurant also offers a choice of wines, including traditional Canarian wine from the barrel.

Afterwards, we had a little chat with Bryan, only for his mum to suggest a piece of her home-made Tiramisu.

We asked for a small portion, just to try it, but a huge piece arrived at the table. It was delicious … the best Tiramisu I’ve ever tasted!

There’s also a selection of home-made sweets, if you manage to make it that far.

So, if you fancy a family-run restaurant with all home-made food, then Adeje Chicken in Buzanada is the place to be.

You will find it on the roundabout on the main road in Buzanada, which leads to Valle San Lorenzo, and there’s plenty of easy parking.

THE long-running saga of whether sugary drinks should be taxed has moved on, with new scientific research saying it could stop millions of people becoming obese over the next decade.

A joint study by Cancer Research UK and the UK Health Forum concluded that a 20% levy on sugary drinks could reduce obesity from 34% of the population in 2025 on current trends to 29%.

That is equal to having 3.7 million fewer obese people in 2025 than there would be without the tax - a reduction the size of the combined populations of Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Bristol and Leicester!

It would also save the NHS about £10m in weight-associated health

and social-care costs in 2025 alone.

Being overweight can lead to such illnesses cancer, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, which is why the researchers want junkfood TV adverts banned before the 9pm watershed, and targets to cut the amount of fat and sugar in food.

They also demand urgent action to stop these TV ads targeting children, as part of efforts to stem Britain’s overweight crisis.

Their report adds to pressure for a crackdown on fizzy pop, amid fears that ministers are poised to reject calls, backed by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, for a tax to discourage people and highlight the dangers by making them more costly.

Instead, say some sources, Prime Minister David Cameron may use the threat of a levy to make companies reduce sugar content in their products.

Alison Cox, of Cancer

Research UK, said: “The ripple effect of a small tax on sugary drinks is enormous. These numbers make it clear why we need to act now, before obesity becomes an even greater problem.

“There are a lot of things working against us when it comes to making healthier choices. We’re all bombarded by junk food advertising of cheap foods, packed with extra calories, and it can be tough for parents to do what’s best for their children.”

Jane Landon, of the UK Health Forum, said: “Countries which have introduced a tax on sugary drinks have not only reduced consumption, but have raised muchneeded revenues for public-health measures.

“These figures indicate that even a modest 20% tax - as part of a societywide response - could help deliver the scale and pace of change needed to turn around the UK’s crisis of obesity-related ill-health.”

Sarah Toule, head of health information at World Cancer Research Fund, said: “These figures are encouraging and show that the government has a role to play in reducing obesity rates in this country.”

How mobiles can halt baby-making process MEN who carry their mobile phone in a trouser pocket, or talk on it for just an hour a day, risk suffering fertility problems.

Scientific research shows that the sperm count can also be reduced by talking on a phone that is charging, or even keeping it close by on a bedside table at night.

The quality of sperm among men in Western countries is steadily decreasing, and it is considered the factor in 40% of cases in which couples have difficulty conceiving a child.

Heat and electro-magnetic activity, which emanate from a mobile phone, are thought to “cook” sperm, causing them to die.

The research findings, examined by a leading British fertility expert, have led him to warn

men about the risks of being “addicted” to mobile phones.

The study, by Israeli scientists monitoring 106 males attending a fertility clinic for a year, revealed that men who chatted on the phone for more than an hour daily, were twice as likely to have low sperm quality as those who spoke for less.

And those who talked on the phone as it was being charged were almost twice as likely to suffer problems.

It also found that the sperm levels of 47% of men, who kept their phones within 20 inches of their groin, were seriously affected, compared with just 11% of the general population.

The findings, published in Reproductive BioMedicine, support a long-feared link between falling male

fertility rates and the prevalence of mobiles.

Professor Martha Dirnfeld, of the Technion University in Haifa, which carried out the study, said: “The sperm levels were down to a number that would make conception difficult.

“If you are trying for a baby and it doesn’t happen within a year, you might want to think of whether it could be your mobile phone habit that is to blame.”

Professor Gedis Grudzinskas, a fertility consultant at London’s St George’s Hospital, said: “Men need to think about their well-being and try to stop being addicted to their phones.”

The study concludes that men planning to conceive should turn off their devices while charging ... or keep it at least 20 inches from the groin!

CURTAINS are a vital part of any interior decoration scheme.

Clearly, they have a practical use: to control the entry of light and heat, to give privacy and to create an intimate environment.

LOVE it or loathe it, the “grey-or-silver” look doesn’t seem to be going away, and there are do’s and don’ts to make sure that, if opting for this shade, it will suit you.

Net curtains used to be a bit of a cliché in decorating terms, but new manufacturing methods, and a wider range of materials, have meant they have been given a new lease of life.

In fact, they’ve even got a new name: voiles.

These can be extremely elegant, and can be a plain white, billowing freshly in a breeze, or more dramatic with a pattern or texture, and in a variety of colours.

Coupled with a heavy curtain or sun-curtain, they can be used to block out light, make a room dark, keep it cool and provide privacy.

If your property is overlooked, a voile gives you the best of both worlds, offering a degree of privacy while not blocking out the light completely.

Voiles are also perfect for bedrooms, where you may wish to move around or get changed without anyone being able to see into the room, but without blocking out the light.

Because voiles are quite light in weight,

they can be secured with slim, stylish poles.

In addition, a mixture of polyester, linen and cotton combinations means they are easily washed and do not need ironing. This can be very handy during a dusty calima here!

Consider something unusual, like having the heavier backing curtain nearest the window, and the voile inside the room. A patterned voile will show its style off better when there is no light behind it.

Voile can also influence your decorating scheme. For example, use heavily-gathered voiles to give an impression of opulence and perhaps a colonial effect, or flat curtains in a more minimalist environment.

Ready-made curtains are cheap, and you may get lucky with the size.

But there is nothing like a pair of curtains which have been tailor-

made for your property.

Firstly, a professional will know what measurements the curtains should be to frame the window, and to be in proportion with the room.

The length should also be perfect as there are additional factors to be taken into account here in Tenerife. Floors tend to be mopped rather than vacuumed, so the curtains should sit just above them floor so they don’t get wet, but not so short that they look inelegant.

There is no doubt you can tell the difference between ready-made curtains and made-tomeasure sets.

Your property is a major investment, whether you use it yourself or rent it out, so make those windows look the part with quality window-dressing.

It’s not a look for anyone over 40, because it can add years, looking more like early grey than funky silver.

Achieving this colour isn’t for the fainthearted, either. The hair has to be bleached to a

pastel blonde, then the silver-coloured toner is added over the top.

If your hair is in a fragile state, it’s going to cause more damage if not done professionally.

And ensuring your hair is in good condition, before the colour, is a must.

This tone flatters paler skin types. Don’t try for this colour if you are naturally darker-

skinned or olive-toned.

It can make you look drawn and sallow.

You’ll have to add a little more make-up than usual, to compensate for the whitening effect of this colour.

Maintaining this tone is easy, with the use of a silver shampoo to boost the silver shade as it fades. As the colour releases from the hair, it can turn back yellowy, which is why this shampoo is essential.

As this colour is not a natural shade, keeping it looking in top form is vital. Moisturising treatment and oilbased shampoos are a must.

This isn’t a shade for those who are colourshy, or who don’t like to experiment. But, with the right cut, this colour looks as though it’s going to stay around for some time.

Looking good in the gym is just as important today as how hard you train. And feeling good about how you look while working out gives you that extra edge.

If you feel good, you will put in that extra mile! So what’s a guy to wear if he wants to

spruce up his gym gear?

Firstly, consider what you’ll be doing in the gym. If it’s lifting weights, then looser clothing or Lycra is best.

There’s no use looking good if what you’re wearing constricts your movements.

Make a basic colour scheme of the colours you like, such as choosing a palette of shades, so you can mix-andmatch items.

Don’t select a hot item if that colour doesn’t match with anything in your sporting wardrobe.

Blacks, white and greys are a good choice, and then add a few brighter colours to bring in detail. But stay away from grey cotton because it literally turns black when you perspire … not a good look.

When choosing your

trainers, think about what they need to be matched with, and for what purpose you need them.

Don’t go for the latest trend if that style of shoe isn’t fit for your particular sport. This gear can be expensive, and purchasing items on a whim can be costly if you don’t end up using them.

Above all, you must feel comfortable in what you wear to work-outs because looking good in the gym is a sure-fire way to keep you motivated.

Your gym clothes now have a dual-purpose because gym-wear is street-wear is casualwear, and you will get a lot of mileage out of your clothing if you choose correctly in the first place.

Peter’s Day-old pups dumped perfect present THANKS to your donations, and what we raise from our Charity shop, we are able to say Yes to the numerous requests for help we receive daily.

And we have recently received a 408-euro cheque to help with our work. Nick Krotke, new auctioneer at Los Abrigos Auction Rooms, and Peter Martinelli MBE, presented the cheque to Cats Welfare owner Sharon Leighton and some of her team.

The money was raised at Peter’s 85th birthday party, at Seven Islands Bar in San Blas, and we are so grateful. Thankyou to everyone who contributed - every cent will help the cats and kittens here in Tenerife.

But here’s the downside. It is very upsetting for us that someone has stolen a large box of golf balls on sale outside our San Blas shop in San Blas, Golf del Sur. There were some 30 bags, each holding six balls in the box and, as we sell them for three euros each, it means we will eventually have been deprived of 90 euros at least .

Our organisation receives no funding whatsoever, and every cent we raise comes from donations and our shop.

But though we are disgusted that someone can steal from a charity, we are also heartened by the outrage it has raised throughout the community, and the kind words of support

we have received.

FOUR tiny puppies, just one day old, were found dumped, callously, in a plastic bag in the street.

They were brought to the refuge by Protection Civil, and we have started bottle-feeding them every few hours, day and night.

Happily, some of our young schoolchildren, at the refuge for our educational programme, were only too happy to help out.

Hopefully, all four pups will survive and be available for adoption in a month or so, with clean bills of health after their extremely bad start in life.

Incidentally, we are desperate for puppy milk, so please feel free to help us out if you can.

George was taken to

hospital on Valentine’s morning and was disappointed to miss the event. Happily, he is now making a good recovery, so his many fans can rest assured that he will soon be back on the circuit.

Gaffers’ perfect pounding!

WITH just a few games remaining in the Direct Telecom Pool League, Gaffers A are in pole position to take the Division One honours again.

This week they produced near-perfection against The Phoenix, who have been in good form. But they were no match for Neil and his team, who, despite several tight games, still opened an 8-0 lead, and it was all over bar the shouting.

The Phoenix were now playing to make the scoreline more respectable, only for Gaffers to pick up the last four frames for the whitewash, and with the standard of the division so high, that’s not easy to do.

Gaffers A now just need six points from their remaining five games to be crowned Champions.

But the chasing pack are not going to give up. Tenerife Hammers A, in second spot, posted another three points by beating Terrace Bantams at home. They recorded 3-1 scores in the first two sessions for a comfortable 6-2 lead, but the Bantams could still salvage a draw with a big effort.

They grabbed the ninth frame to give themselves hope, but Mal made mistakes against Wez, who was back in form, and the “illusionist” took the

frame for a Hammers’ win.

Dreamers A, still chasing the runnersup spot, had to graft for their win against Gaffers B. Both teams were in good form and the games were tight.

At 5-5 it could have gone either way, but Dreamers A have added a mental toughness this season and they held their nerve to take the final two frames.

Things are starting to get interesting at the foot of Division One. Tenerife Hammers C are holding the rest of the league up, but they were hoping to take some points in Los Abrigos against Phoenix Potters.

It was not just a league match because it had the added spice of the Werthers Original Cup, and the home side prevailed after going in front and staying there, winning by the narrowest of margins.

Hammers C now have a huge task on their hands to avoid relegation. Especially as the teams around them picked up points with the exception of Bluebell A, who hosted Palms A, who, literally, pulled themselves out of Sick Bay One to play.

They struggled to get a team together, but cometh the hour … 70-year-old Kung Fu stepped up, taking the opening frame in what would be a topsy-turvy match.

Rewired earned another three points with an away win at Splash Bar. Craig’s team have been out of form lately, dropping away from the promotion race. And this was another game for them to forget.

At the halfway point they were 4-2 behind but still in the contest, until Rewired moved through the gears with a skilful display to capture all six remaining frames.

Crown B, still favoured for the title, had to fight for their points at home against Hoppy’s A. It was another 50-50 match and looked to be heading for a draw until Crown made a breakthrough, took the lead and had enough in the tank to get over the line.

Mucker stepped up to roll the black into the middle bag. No! He jawed it! Kung Fu chalked his cue, potted the red, kicked the table, and rolled back the years to slam the black into the middle pocket, giving Palms A a second straight 7-5 win to leave Bluebell A looking over their shoulder.

Terrace Roosters gave themselves a relegation lifeline with a solid home win against Rewind A. Lee set the visitors on their way with the first frame, but Dan, Mario and then Warren came back with three frames on the bounce. And the same three players took the next three frames before Lee won his second of the night.

Lee went straight back to the table and showed his teammates how to do it with his third frame. Then it was Dan v The Ripper for the third time. And Dan was definitely on a roll as he won again to give Roosters a muchneeded three points.

The night’s final clash featured Palms B against Exiles A in another close match, highlighting the standard of this division.

Exiles made the early running and took a 3-1 lead, but Palms B found their stride to win all four games in the second session to lead 5-3. It then swung back towards Exiles A as they won the next three for a 6-5 lead going into the final frame. How this would end was anybody’s guess. But youthfulness won the day in a nervy last frame as Exiles’ Zac sunk the black to give them a good win.

In the Division Two title fight, things are starting to hot up with

just couldn’t find a way back and the game was soon over.

Picasso’s A continued their fine promotion battle with another decent win, at home against a Bluebell B side right behind them.

Fran, the league’s only female captain, has proved to be an astute leader and knows how to get the best out of her boys. When Bluebell B moved into a 4-2 lead, she got her order-of-play spot-on, and Picasso’s roared back to take all six frames left for a solid victory.

Treehouse B, hoping for a top-five finish, came up against Tenerife Pool Tables, who are right behind them. PJ beat Nick to get the home team off to a winning start, but TPT fought back to take the next four frames for a nice lead, PJ and Ben hit back before TPT’s Adi ensured they kept a 5-3 lead as they entered the final session. Nick then assured TPT of draw with a win against Bernard. Ben pulled one back for the home side, but Harley and then Adi, with his third win, secured the points for TPT.

Double delight for Phoenix!

YOU wait nine years for a league title, then two arrive at the same time! No wonder it was cheers all round at the Phoenix Bar. Their ‘A’ team wrapped up the Division 1 crown last Friday, and it will sit nicely alongside the Division 2 title secured by their B team the previous week.

For long periods during the campaign, Phoenix and Boothen Army both had designs on the top trophy, and either side could have won it.

But maybe the earlyseason form, with Phoenix hardly dropping a point in the opening weeks, was the key to their success.

Either way, it was an amazing achievement for a little back-street bar, and messages of congratulations from far and wide were warmly received, including those from the Boothen Army gang.

Sure, the more talented players will ply their trade in Division 1, but the Friday nights will always include plenty of banter and laughs - and

fantastic sportsmanship!

So a big pat on the back to everyone, from me and the Committee, for what has been an exceptional season.

But, we are not done just yet, and more darts action can be seen during the run-up to the League’s Presentation Night at Showtime on 1st April. By the way, Harry picked that date, not me!

And what better darts action could you wish for than the EZE group exhibition night at the Showtime venue in Las Americas tomorrow (Saturday).

You can read more about the event in this edition of the Canarian Weekly. But one thing’s for sure: I will be there, and I can highly recommend this third staging of world-class darts.

Suso so, so cruel CD Tenerife 3 Llagostera 1

By Roscoe AFTER two draws and two defeats in their previous four matches, it was important for CD Tenerife to win last weekend.

If you were watching on Teletext, an app, or one of those brilliant inplay jobbies they have on the bookies site, this would have seemed like a routine win against limited opposition.

Don’t believe that for a second.

Tenerife were 2-0 up

early on, thanks to goals from the lively Nano.

But the visitors showed a lot of character and, with Tenerife going through another of those “that’ll do” phases, they nearly returned to the mainland with a huge point.

Nano’s brace came from a couple of smart finishes, and the La Laguna youngster now has six goals for the season.

He is going the right way.

At that stage, Tenerife should have gone through the gears. But, just as they did against Atletico B, they started to drift through the game.

The defence was having a nap when Llagostera pulled one back from a Imaz tap-in just before the half-hour.

In the second half, visiting manager Oriol Alsina got his charges

playing a higher line, which enabled the match to open up.

Llagostera have a lot of experience, and that showed because late on they looked for what, in truth, would have been

a deserved equaliser.

And they thought they had it in time added on. A cross into the box was sweetly met by the head of Alberto Elcassi. He headed it low and Tenerife cat Dani did well do get to the ball.

But it bobbled up and, by the time he snatched the ball, Llagostera players were, in unison, appealing for the goal.

Did the whole of the ball cross the line? Ref Victor Areces had no view from the edge of the box. His assistant, though, was perfectly placed. He had no doubt and shook his head. The TV replays

showed it was close but no goal! Well done Lino!

As the visitors argued, Dani smelt blood, throwing the ball out to Suso, who was already charging upfield.

With just one token defender to skip around, he was in on goal. Rene Roman raced off his goal-line, but cool Suso smacked the ball past him. It took just 20 seconds for a draw to become a victory, but it was harsh on Llagostera.

One final point: new boys Thierry Moutinho and Javi Lara both looked lively, and could be fine additions.

Good chance for strugglers

AFTER the excitement of the FA Cup, we return to Premier League action. It should be an interesting weekend because the clubs in the lower end of the table have had a good break and return to action, rested and fresh.

By Adi Benson West Ham v Sunderland Hammers, lying seventh and just a point off fifth place, will be keen to maintain their pace in the hope of qualifying for Europe. They’ve been in good form, but they face a team battling for survival, who won last time out.

Sunderland picked up three points against Man United and are now just one point away from moving out of the relegation zone. A win here, and other results going their way, would do the trick and give their confidence a huge boost.

Jermaine Defoe is getting goals, and he could make the difference.

Last season: 1- 0 Prediction: Draw Southampton v Chelsea Saints had a slow start to the season, but since the festive period they have put together an impressive run of results to climb the table to sixth spot. Their defence has tightened up and they have the League’s third-best defensive record.

Chelsea are unbeaten in the league since Hiddink took over, but this will be a stern test. They need other results to go their way but, if they do and

they win, the reigning champions can move into the top half of the table for the first time this season. But they are still a long way short of a European place.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-1 Leicester v Norwich Leicester are still top of the pile, but the gap is closing, with Spurs and Arsenal just two points behind them.

They should beat a team hovering above the relegation places. But the pressure of trying to keep in front might get to them, and we will get a feel of their mental strength in this tie.

Norwich are just keeping their heads above water - goaldifference keeps - them out of the bottom three, but they must start taking points. It has got to the stage in the season where you can’t rely on other teams to beat your rivals, so they need to up their game.

But an away trip to the leaders will be tough. If they can win, though, the confidence will flow.

Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A Stoke v Aston Villa Stoke have looked good at times this season, but they have been on a poor run lately. Fortunately, that spell has been

halted and they need to kick on again. They are in mid-table, but just five points off fifth, so there is still plenty to play for in terms of league position.

Villa, still trying to battle against relegation, are running out of games.

They need a fantastic run of results if they are too pull off the great escape, but I just can’t see it happening. The team are drained of confidence and they start games with their heads already down. It is an almost impossible position to get out of, and Remi Garde needs big performances from his team.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-1 Watford v Bournemouth Watford are another team who made a slow start to the season, but what stood them in good stead was that they were drawing games as opposed to losing them.

I have said on more than one occasion that if they could score goals, they would be okay, and, eventually, Ighalo and Deeney found the net to leave them going from strength to strength.

Bournemouth came up as Champions above Watford, but haven’t fared so well.

Yet they’ve have been so unlucky with long-term injuries to key players.

Fortunately for them, there are three or four teams who are worse, which could keep them safe.

Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A

West Brom v Crystal Palace Baggies’ fans are starting to turn against manager Tony Pulis, and an FA Cup defeat to Championship side Reading hasn’t helped matters. They are eight points clear of the relegation zone and should stay up, but the fans want to see more attractive football. Don’t we all?

Palace have been going backwards lately and find themselves level on points with their opponents.

Earlyseason form saw them maintaining a position towards the top of the league, but they are now in the bottom half. If they are to salvage their season, they need to go on a good run.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-2 Man Utd v Arsenal Things are still not right at Old Trafford, and the fans are becoming more and more frustrated with Van Gaal. A loss against Sunderland last time out saw the fans full of optimism that the club might get rid of him. But

he’s still there, and even a recent 3-0 FA Cup win against lower opposition couldn’t appease them because it was still a poor performance.

Arsenal got back to winning ways, narrowing the gap on leaders Leicester to move level on points with Spurs.

We are coming into March, though, and the Gunners have a habit of collapsing late in the season, normally through injuries and defeats by Barcelona in the Champions League.

Are they tough enough to see this season’s title race out?

Prediction: Draw Last season: 1-1

Tottenham v Swansea Spurs cannot afford to slip up, with Arsenal breathing down their necks. But with such a young, fit squad, they might just have a slight advantage. They are being talked about as potential league winners this season, and rightly so, because they are showing impressive form. The desire is there from the players and manager, which could take them all the way.

The Swans are still involved in a relegation battle, despite a couple of positive results recently. A win here would certainly relieve

the pressure a little, but it will be a big ask.

The advantage they have is that Spurs had a European game last night (Thursday), so Swansea’s energy levels should be better.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 3-2 LEAGUE CUP FINAL

Liverpool v Man City Liverpool beat City comfortably last time out in the league, but this Wembley final will be a completely different challenge.

They are still weak at the back, and against set-pieces, so City are sure to exploit these deficiencies at every opportunity. A front three of Firmino, Sturridge and Coutinho are likely to start and, should they gel, they could be lethal.

City fielded a young, inexperienced team in the 5-1 defeat at Chelsea in the FA Cup, but won a tricky midweek trip to Kiev in the Champions League. You can bet that Pellegrini will have his team up for this as he looks to win a trophy before his time at the club comes to an end. On their day, City are capable of beating anyone - but it will depend on which City turn up.

Prediction: Away win

Ñandu still rain supreme!

Fuerteventura 7 Ñandu 45

ARE we in Wales, England or Antarctica? That was the question being asked by the Ñandu contingent as they touched down in Fuerteventura for their third game of the season, such was the weather that awaited them.

Having won both their matches, they faced Mahoh for the first time.

The whistle blew, the torrential rain began, and the ball proved extremely slippery as both teams vied for control. Ñandu’s pack kept it tight and attacked the fringes of the ruck, hoping to find a gap. But Mahoh held strong, providing a stern Ñandu chal-

lenge as they tackled low and forced errors upon the visitors.

But Ñandu responded through the half-backs as Oakenfold and Paolin changed tactics to pile the pressure on their opponents, converting it into points. Ñandu also stamped their authority in the line-out, and the deadlock was broken early on, Gabriel Trujilio scoring out wide to seal off an exciting passage of play, then kicking the conversion.

Within minutes, a scrum provided Mateo with clean ball as he scored his second try of the season, exploit-

ing the gap between the scrum and first defender.

As the rain turned into hail, Ñandu’s centre partnership of Cox and Trujillo adapted and fed the ball to marauding full-back Thomas Jacob, who used the space wise-

ly to finish deft passing moves.

He finished the game with four tries after a superb overall performance, which epitomised the team’s philosophy.

The final player to score was Mel Dehabre, who touched down for his second try of the season to complete the 45-7 success. It was a testament to the team’s diligence, especially as none had ever experienced such dire playing conditions. Ñandu are now gearing up to tackle Spanish champions Valladolid Rugby Club in a tournament next month.
