Sanchez bid fails

Continued from front This week, PSOE leader Pedro Sanchez tried and failed to grasp power. He came second in the election, but he hopes to establish a coalition government after being asked to form one by King Felipe.

At the start of the week, Sanchez signed a pact with the Ciudadanos party and had hoped to tempt Pablo Iglesias into joining them.

But the Podemos leader dismissed the terms of power out of hand and rounded on his would-be bed-mate. Iglesias is convinced the offer was really a ruse to smoke out a PSOE pact with the ruling Popular Party.

This has been acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s first choice all along, but Iglesias said he wasn’t falling for it, maintaining that Sanchez’s real goal was to recruit the support of the PP. He goaded the Socialist leader, saying: “They’ve prohibited you from governing with us. Don’t try to fool us with a pact that doesn’t provide solutions to this country’s problems.”

With Sanchez desperate to find a majority, he

was in bullish form as he addressed Parliament on Wednesday. “There won’t be winners and losers,” he told Parliament.

“We are all going to have to give up on some our demands. We need dialogue. No one has a majority. If we can’t reach agreement, we haven’t done our job.”

He used the word dialogue a dozen times in a speech clearly directed at the Podemos party.

“We share many ideas with Podemos and we should stop arguing about details and form a united left-wing government,” said Sanchez.

This was met with a lot of head-shaking, however, and some laughter from the high-ranking Podemos members.

Sanchez pointed out that the alliance would fall short of an overall majority and, therefore, needed the support of Ciudadanos to govern.

But this cut no mustard.

Podemos will not agree any deal with their hated Ciudadanos rivals.

Despite this, Sanchez ploughed ahead, in the vain hope of getting the message through to the lower-level MPs. “The worst option is that Rajoy’s Popular Party be al-

lowed to return to power,” he screamed.

But his message was shot down in some style

by Rajoy. The acting Spanish Prime Minister produced the speech of his career as he rounded on Sanchez, much to the enjoyment of his PP ministers.

“You’ve wasted everyone’s time. This is a comedy. Your candidacy is a farce,” he roared, to the sound of applause.

The hits on Sanchez kept coming from Rajoy as he unleashed a barrage of personal and political attacks against the PSOE leader, who is trying to become the first minority Prime Minister since the end of the Franco regime.

Rajoy, cheered on by his MPs, said Sanchez’s bid to lead a broad coalition “has no chance of success”.

He added: “He should

recognise the PP’s right to govern because we won the most seats.

Sanchez is a fraud.

“He plans to eliminate what was achieved in Spain throughout these past four years, which prevented this country from needing a bailout, created jobs, improved its competitiveness and caused it to grow economically.”

In many ways, Rajoy was putting down the first marker ahead of what will surely now be another General Election.

The bad blood between Spain’s two biggest parties is there for all to see. Any hopes that they could work on forming a Government are long gone.

And it’s no different with the two other parties as well. In fact, the divisions between Pablo Iglesias and Albert Ri-

vera of Ciudadanos are getting wider.

On Wednesday, Sanchez needed the support of a majority to take office. He got only 130 votes. This was made up by 90 votes from his PSOE and 40 from the Ciudadanos - nowhere near the 176 required!

Sanchez does, however, get a second bite at the cherry today (Friday).

This afternoon, there will be another short debate, with Sanchez allowed 10 minutes to try to persuade MPs to change their minds.

There will then be a second vote, and history is on his side. Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo in 1981, and Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in 2008, both got the nod after a second show of hands.

However there seems little chance of Sanchez being able to pull this rabbit out of the hat.

Under the terms of the Spanish Constitution, he does have until 2nd May to try to find the votes needed.

In theory, this gives Sanchez the chance and the time to try to do a deal with Iglesias.

Maybe foreseeing this, Sanchez wrote an open letter to Iglesias on his

website, asking him to think again.

He said: “I hold out my hand again to the leader of Podemos, and I have asked Pablo Iglesias to give an opportunity to change.

“It is the people who are suffering from the crisis, the poverty, the middleclass and the workingclass that PP has sunk with its cruel and ineffective measures.

“They do not deserve Rajoy’s government, Mr. Iglesias. It is not that you cannot; it is that you simply do not want to. I urge the leader of Podemos to sign up to the agreement signed by PSOE and Ciudadanos, which we can all subscribe to.

“Because there are only two options, Mr. Iglesias: either change or continuity. There is nothing I would like more than a leftist government, but make no mistake, there is no majority, and I will never allow the Spain government to rest on independent parties.”

If this Sanchez plea fails and he cannot get a majority through Parliament, there will be a fresh General Election on 26th June.

Andy Van Man jailed for child-sex offences FORMER Tenerife resident Andrew Logan has been sentenced to five years and nine months in prison after being found guilty of several charges of a sexual nature against a child.

He has had to sign the sex offenders’ register, and has a prevention order which stops him working with children for the rest of his life.

Logan, known locally as Andy Van Man, was found guilty of seven counts of sexual activity, involving a girl under the age of 13.

In May 2015, he was arrested in Tenerife and flown by police to Madrid. An extradition warrant had been issued by the UK authorities.

After a swift hearing, he was transferred into the custody of British police officers, and, on June 30th, was charged with four counts of the sexual assault of a female child under 13.

He was also charged

with two counts of causing/inciting an under-13 female to engage in sexual activity, and one count of engaging in a sexual activity in the presence of a child aged under 13.

The 44-year-old, formerly of Clayton-leMoors, near Accrington in Lancashire, had pleaded not guilty to all the charges, which took place over a decade ago.

Detective Inspector Julie Cross said after the trial: “He was arrested in Tenerife in May last year, and then taken to Madrid and charged with numerous offences. Following the trial, he has been convicted of all of them.

“Unfortunately, they were only reported to us in 2009, and it has taken a long time to reach the point where he could be brought back into the country.”

She added: “The victim had to give her account and evidence of the attacks, which isn’t the best thing, and she did extremely well.

“Hopefully she will now be able to get some closure as a result of the verdicts.”

So hard for the young to cut their home ties

MORE than 1,000 people demonstrated through Santa Cruz streets last weekend in support of the “Save the Tejita” movement.

They are battling against the building of a hotel near the Tejita beach, close to the Red Mountain’s special nature reserve in the Granadilla municipality.

The protest, flowing through several streets, was described as a success by the movement, comprising several groups opposing the hotel construction, which will affect that protected nature area, among other concerns.

The “Save the Tejita” platform has collected 100,000 signatures from people against the proposed hotel. They are firmly in favour of preserving the natural heritage of this southern Tenerife area.

Red Mountain, declared a natural site of national interest in 1987, forms part of the Canary Network of Protected Natural Areas.

It was reclassified as a special nature reserve in 1994, by the Law of Natural Areas of the Canary Islands, for its value as a unique Tenerife habitat.

It is said to be derived from a representative territory of volcanic, geomorphological values and unique coastlines, fossil dunes and

geological formations as seismites.

It is also home to several endemic species of birds, such as the Kentish plover, and flora such as pineapple sea,.

As a result of this special, high-ecological value, the Red Mountain Nature Reserve is listed as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) within the Macaronesian region of the European Union, as well as being declared a Special Protection Area.

IT is becoming harder and harder for parents to get their kids to fly the nest - and the problem is getting worse in Spain.

Official figures show that nearly 80% of under-30s are still living in the family home. And in the Canary Islands, just 21.5% of this age group have moved out.

These statistics are slightly higher than the national average (20.8%), according to the latest Youth Council of Spain report.

The number of youngsters setting up an independent home for them-

selves has decreased in the last year, and the delay in leaving home has become more evident among the under-25s.

The Balearic Islands, Cataluña and Navarra are the autonomous communities with a higher rate of youngsters starting new lives on their own, according to this study, which covers the first half of 2015.

It also demonstrates that young men and women need to earn 95.44% more if they want to buy a home.

The growing jobs’ market in the Balearics has put youngsters there in a more advantageous position than the rest, when it comes to bettering themselves.

World champ Alexandra is Adeje’s queen

ADEJE Council has awarded its Woman of the Year Abinque Prize to teenage sporting champion Alexandra Rinder, the youngest-ever recipient.

The 17-year-old, bodyboarding world champion for the second year running, has become a role model for Adeje’s youngsters.

Mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga said: “She belongs to the constellation of Adeje youth who, in recent years, have been successful in different disciplines such as sport, literature and music.

“Alexandra has those qualities which we value: talent, a work ethic, strength, dedication and consistency.

“She is a reference point for young people who see in her someone worth imitating, not just for her world titles but for her discipline and determination to follow her dreams.”

Coincidentally, the prize is being awarded as the Adeje Sports De-

partment launches its equality campaign for sport, free from gender barriers.

The Mayor added: “With this award, we are reflecting an important segment of our identity.

“We are recognising women, individuals and associations who, by example and action, are continuing the fight for genuine equality between men and women, to whom we extend our gratitude and admiration.”

Alexandra, who is 6ft 7ins and of German origin, was the second Canarian to win the female title at international level. And, at 16, she was also the youngest holder of the world title, making history within the sport.

The 13th Abinque Prize award ceremony takes place during the traditional gala dinner next Friday (11th March) from 8pm, in Costa Adeje’s Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA).

Previous winners have included Brigitte Gypen, founder of the Walk for Life breastcancer movement; the collective group of women who clean the public schools and installations; hospital visitors; the founder of one of the town’s most respected crèches and the borough’s tomato and banana packers.

Last year’s winners were the oldest women in the borough, who have helped bring the people of Adeje into the 21st century.

Red Cross helps so many poor families THE Red Cross, which helped 3,700 vulnerable families in the South last year, is seeing more and more cases of needy people.

“The demand for assistance in the South is increasing,” said Jose Luis Camison, Abona’s Red Cross co-ordinator, this week. “Every day, people come to our offices looking for some benefit.”

The Red Cross told a press conference that in 2015, the long-term effects of the economic crisis took its a toll on a large number of families.

High rates of unemployment, especially long-term, complicated the picture and, over the last year, the Red Cross provided aid to families in the municipalities of Arona, Gra-

nadilla, San Miguel, Arico and Vilaflor.

Camison added: “Over the years, we have seen a change. Before, it was mostly immigrants, but more Spanish nationals, ranging from 25-50 years, now need assistance.”

The data confirms that of the 80,000 actions and interventions in 2015 through services and social-intervention projects, only 8,127 (just over 10%) were for people from other countries.

Typically, the Red Cross offered support, social assistance, training, information, counselling and monitoring.

The most cases occurred in Las Galletas and El Fraile, where it provided food, the most basic aid.

UB40 just the ticket

THE first Tenerife legends’ gig, featuring reggae band UB40, is already a total sellout. They will play Las Americas on 18th March at the Pyramids of Arona, and there is not one spare ticket!

The project, called “Legends Live”, will certainly start with a bang.

There was a lot of expectation from the very beginning, and a quarter of the 1,500 seats were snapped up inside the first 24 hours.

During 2016, “‘Legends Live” will bring to the Island a series of seven exclusive concerts, comprising groups and solo pop/rock stars of the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties.

After this month’s gig, there will be shows in April, May, August, September, October and November.

The Alan Parsons Project will perform on 22nd April, with Jethro Tull confirmed for 20th May.

Gibraltar chief urges Spain to end the feud LIEUTENANT General Edward Davis, Governor of Gibraltar and Commander-inChief, believes Spain should cooperate with law enforcement and military assets in Gibraltar.

Following last week’s “provocative and unacceptable” incursion, in which the Spanish Navy corvette Infanta Elena risked collision with a Royal Navy patrol boat, he said “Consensual dialogue” would avoid avoid high-risk, potentially-fatal situations at sea. Lt Gen Davis, in

his first interview since being sworn in as Governor, said Britain had “absolute confidence” in Gibraltar’s “irrefutable legal and moral authority” over its sea, land and airspace.

But he stressed that while the UK would always challenge, record and protest any unlawful incursion, it would also attempt to defuse potentially-dangerous situations.

He was full of praise for the personnel patrolling British Gibraltar territorial waters, saying: “Operating in an environment where your posture is to de-escalate is the hardest place to be. It’s easy to escalate, but de-escalating

takes supreme courage and supreme skill.”

The Gibraltar chief, a Royal Marine and Special Forces veteran, is a seasoned military commander who has held senior leadership roles within the British military hierarchy and international alliances.

And, recently, he was Nato’s Deputy Commander for land forces in Turkey.

Faced with situations like the one last week, he said: “My frustration is that the jobs of both Spanish and British law-enforcement and military assets is to keep their people safe and secure. And that’s what they should spend their time on, and focus on.

“Events like last week’s incursion distract both of us from keeping the people of Spain, and the people of Gibraltar, safe and secure.

Surely, we should be focusing on what really matters.”

During a candid interview, Lt Gen Davis reflected on Gibraltar’s role as a UK military base, against the background of conflict and instability in the Middle East and North Africa.

He also spoke of the security challenges faced by the Rock, which, in common with other European countries, is under threat from Islamic fundamentalist extremism.

Al Quada ‘recruiter’ returned to the US THE Spanish Government, after detaining an Algerian-Irish man since arresting him on 11th December last year, has agreed to extradite him to the US. Ali Charaf Damache is accused of recruiting an American woman, who called herself “Jihad Jane” and plotted to kill a Swedish artist.

Spain’s cabinet approved the extradition last Friday.

It was based on a USissued warrant, stating that he was suspected of recruiting to form

cells for Al Qaeda and the Islamic Maghreb extremist group.

The Justice Department said Damache recruited Colleen LaRose in 2009, when they both lived in Ireland.

Michigan-born LaRose, 53, who used the online nickname “Jihad Jane” was convicted of agreeing to kill Swedish artist Lars Vilks, whose drawings depicting the prophet Muhammad offended Muslims. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2015.

Iglesias back in Canaries JULIO Iglesias, the most successful international Spanish singer of all, is returning to the Canary Islands.

He will perform at La Palma’s municipal football stadium in Acero, Llanos de Aridane, on 18th July.

The gig is backed by La Palma Cabildo, and it is that hoped the superstar’s show will attract residents and tourists alike.

It is also a showcase event as it is the first show of his summer tour of Spain, in which he will promote “Mex-

ico”, his first album in Spanish for 12 years.

There is some speculation that Iglesias will also have dates in Gran Canaria’s Los Realejos and Las Palmas, but nothing has yet been confirmed.

Spain’s 100,000 transplants SURGEONS in Spain have performed the country’s 100,000th transplant, maintaining its No.1 global position in that area.

The kidney transplant, at Valencia’s Dr Peset Hospital early last month, went smoothly, according to the Na-

tional Transplant Organisation (ONT).

According to ONT head Rafael Matesanz: “The landmark transplant recalls 100,000 moments of anguish, 100,000 moments of happiness and 100,000 new opportunities.”

He added, proudly: “It is a figure that shows the enormous effort of Spanish society, of the donors and their fami-

lies, as well as the Spanish health system.

“It is worth the effort to remind and encourage people to continue to make these little miracles that are transplants possible.”

Of the 100,000 operations, 62,967 were kidney transplants, and, not content to rest on their laurels, the ONT wants to double that figure through-

out the next 15 years.

“It won’t be necessary to wait another 50 years,” said Matesanz, referring to the period from the first-ever transplant in Spain up to now.

Spain has led the world in organ donations and transplants for the past 24 years, even outstripping its own 2014 organ-donation record with a 4,360 total.

More Big Brother THERE have been some genuinely scary stories this week.

The thought that the next US President will be Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton is still keeping me up at night.

Then there is the ongoing concern over the missing Hong Kong book-keepers. If you are not up on this story it’s the shocking tale of five book publishers who have been missing for almost a year.

They have vanished, and it is widely thought that the Chinese Government picked them up for selling banned books.

It’s one of those stories where you check that we are actually living in 2016. Banned books? What is this.

And I felt a bit like Guy Montag when I read this week that Salford City Council has banned people from swearing in the Quays area of the city.

You read that right.

If you use “foul and abusive” language, you could be fined up to

£1,000 on the spot. The Council has not yet revealed how the ban is enforced, or what you can and can’t say.

If you are not from the region. let me tell you that it covers an area which includes the MediaCityUK, which is home to the BBC. And Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground is around the corner.

A Council spokesperson said: “We are satisfied the ban will improve quality of life for those living in Salford Quays.”

What utter tosh.

We already live in a world where there are security cameras on every street corner. All our online correspondence is monitored.

And someone I met a few years ago, who works for one of the “intelligence agencies”, told me straight that not only are your phone calls monitored, but your day-today life can be heard. Unless you remove the battery, your phone is ALWAYS transmitting.

Now we are being told what we can or cannot say?

Scared yet?

You should be.

I MUST write to you after being involved in a traffic accident last Tuesday at Las Chafiras, outside China Town.

I was in the passenger seat of someone else’s car when a young girl smashed into the side of us, trapping me.

I was covered in broken glass from the smashed window, and to say I was terrified was putting it mildly.

But I want to commend the fire brigade, particularly, as they were absolutely brilliant.

They were so caring and, most of them spoke some English.

I couldn’t get out of the car because the door was badly buckled, so they had to cut me out, which was really scary. Being partially disabled didn’t make things very easy, either.

The ambulance crew were also very good and most caring, and the police were so helpful as well. It is my first experience of an accident here in Tenerife, which, I suppose, makes me very lucky.

But I am so thankful I was looked after so well. You often hear about the bad side of the Services, but I have nothing but respect and admiration for them.

Well done to all the men who came to my rescue. Thank you so much.

The figures were revealed by Domingo Nunez, the Canarian Government’s General Directorate of Public Health.

Despite an increase in severe cases and deaths from complications, he said there had been fewer cases this year than last.

Nunez added that most of the deaths were down to pneumonia and other respiratory diseases, because the strains circulating this year had these characteristics.

It was reminiscent of the 2009 pandemic, but the virus then was much more aggressive than in previous years.

Last year, at this stage of the ‘flu season, 29 people were hospitalised as severe cases, and just two deaths had been recorded.

So Nanez believes the worst is over.

He confirmed that most of the severe cases were type A, and was adamant that though the term “flu” was - and still is used by the media, the vast majority of cases were, simply, heavy colds.

And Nunez has reiterated that the epidemic wave is in decline. The rate decreased last week from 215 to 172 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

And this week, around 125 cases per 100,000 were expected.

Almost half of the 109 hospitalised patients were deemed to be in a high-risk group, with 32 over 64-years-old, 32 with chronic heart disease and 17 with an immune disease. Ten were obese, five suffered from liver disease and only four were vaccinated.

“It’s a little late to get vaccinated, but it can soften the blow and decrease your chances of contracting ‘flu if you have one of the risk factors,” said Nunez.

And he stresses that people over 65 are the first to be vaccinated, as are the morbidly obese, pregnant women and health workers.

THE worst of the ‘flu epidemic has passed - and that’s official, following 109 serious cases of influenza this year and, tragically, eight deaths.

Mobility department, said this week: “We already have a group

of buses with the new procedures, and we have been operating on

a trial basis since midJanuary.” He added: “It’s new software and there are still some bugs that will be corrected in the coming weeks.”

The idea is that everything will be up and running by July, said Ortega. “The system - the input and output - should be able to validate everything soon, and it will collect the exact rate required every time.”

It has cost the local Government 9.1 million euros to install the system in the 530 buses and 26 trams.

It could be a lot worse than flu!

WE are in the middle of the ‘flu season and, for many, a bout of this debilitating illness can take a long time to clear from our systems.

But it does, eventually, subside.

So spare a thought for those who have strange symptoms and ailments, which do not heal with treatment. Some find that their doctor doesn’t even know what the problem is.

There are many disadvantages of having a rare disease, and new research shows that five in every 10,000 people are affected.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are about 7,000 rare diseases, affecting 8% of the population. And it is estimated that over 3,000,000 people with rare diseases exist in Spain.

In the Canary Islands, some 160,000 people have a wide range of diseases.

The Spanish Federation for Rare Diseases (Feder) states that, in the last two years, nearly half of those affected had to travel outside their province for issues related to their disease, and four in 10 have moved at least five times.

Pedro Lainez, Candelaria hospital’s Internal Medicine specialist, admits that, in most cases, reaching a diagnosis is extremely complicated because of the great diversity of rare diseases.

But he said the problem was getting better, and that the authorities were starting to take action.

Last week, the Ministry of Health and the Canarian Government revealed that two new centres of reference for rare diseases will open in the Canaries shortly.

Boob-job Brits are a big lift for Spain MORE and more Britons are coming to Spain for cheaper cosmetic surgery, such as botox, boob jobs and tummy tucks.

Figures just released show the number of overseas tourists coming to Spain for cosmetic surgery is at an all-time high, with Brits leading the way.

Last year alone, the health tourism sector grew by 20%, bringing in 500m euros, and experts at Marbella’s Ocean Clinic are sure it will break the one-billion barrier in five years.

A spokesman said: “Cosmetic treatments in the UK cost around 60% more than in Spain, typically, but cutting costs does not mean cutting quality of care.

Spain has some of the best medical establishments in the world.”

The average cost of private breast-implant surgery in the UK is between £4,500 -6,500. By comparison, the average for the same procedure in Spain is between 3,500-5,500 euros.

As well as the Brits, people from the Middle East, Russia and America are also taking advantage of the savings and choosing Spain for cosmetic surgery.

Spanish wine tops, but price just isn’t right SPAIN was the world’s top wine exporter last year, setting record sales of nearly 24 million hectolitres, which brought in revenues of 2.6bn euros.

Those figures easily beat the 20 million hec-

tolitres exported by Italy and France’s 15 million - second and third behind Spain in the global exporting list.

Yet Spain was streets away from the 8bn euros earned by France last year, and well behind Italy’s 5bn-plus.

And the reason was simple: The average sale price of Spanish wine was just 1.10 euros a litre, 2.9% down on 2014.

Rafael del Rey, head of the Spanish Wine Market Observatory, says the price fall and differential represents a decline in the sector.

He feels it needs to be overcome with greater focus on bottled wine exports with some kind of denomination of origin, or even of specific grape varieties, following the example of Italian winemakers.

By country, France imports the most Spanish wine, buying in a total of 6.5m hectolitres. The product is sold as table wine, with labelling indicating its origin from the European Union, or sometimes as Spanish wine. Germany is the second-top importer of Spanish wine, with 4.2m hectolitres, and Italy the third (2.7m, hectolitres).

Housing market perks up THERE is good news in the housing market, because 2015 was a rather good year, with the average price of a private home rising 2.1%.

That’s according to the Ministry of Development’s price index, which shows that, in the last quarter of the year, the average price per square metre of free housing was 1,490.1 euros, 1% higher than in the previous quarter and a 1.8% annual increase.

Subsidised housing had an average price in the fourth quarter of 1,095.6 euros per sq/m which was 0.1% lower than the

third quarter - an annual fall of 0.4%.

And the average price per sq/m at the end of 2015 represents a 29.1% drop from its peak in the first quarter of 2008.

By region, 14 of them saw a growth: Baleares (5.4%); Madrid (3.4%); La Rioja (3.2%); Catalonia (3%); The Canary Islands (3%); Castilla y León (2.6%) and Navarra (2.2%).

In contrast, other regions show Cantabria at the head, with a price decline of 4%; Ceuta and Melilla (-1.8%); Basque Country (1.3%) and Murcia (- 0.1%).

Forget living here, says Tory minister A TOP Tory from the UK Government says that British people will not be allowed to live abroad in France and Spain, including Tenerife, if the UK leaves the EU.

David Lidington, the Europe Minister, warned that a British exit from the bloc would be a “massive” risk - everything we take for granted about access to the single market would be in question.”

The scaremonger stressed that it could take Britain up to 10 years to negotiate new trade deals with Europe after an exit.

“Trade deals between the EU and other countries and bilateral trade deals of any type normally take six, seven, eight years and counting,” he said.

“Everything we take for granted about access to the single market - trade taking place without customs checks or paperwork at national frontiers, the right of British citizens to live in Spain or France - those would all be up in the air. It is massive. It is massive what is at risk.”

Business Minister Anna Soubry echoed that Britain would face “undoubted chaos” in the two years following an exit.

Their comments follow accusations by Eurosceptic ministers of “scaremongering” by David Cameron and his allies.

If Britain votes to leave the EU on 23rd June, Downing Street says the Government will trigger “Article 50”, beginning the process of withdrawal and giving the UK two years to negotiate an alternative relationship with Brussels.

Ms Soubry told BBC Radio Five Live: “I’ve said we’re better in.

And what has to happen is - those who want us to leave the EU have to explain to us what that would look like.

“I will freely confess that, until towards the end of last week, when I looked into this in real detail, I didn’t realise just how dreadful it would be in terms of what then happens.

“And the two years of undoubted chaos that

would ensue, should we vote to leave. And that would be bad for our country.”

The warnings came as Lord Howard, the former Tory leader backing a “Brexit” said he disagreed with Boris Johnson that there could not be a second referendum following a “leave” vote in June.

Mr Johnson has now ruled out the possibility of a second referendum after initially suggesting that an “out” vote could be used to negotiate a better settlement with Brussels before, ultimately, staying in the EU. However, Lord Howard said: “I don’t agree with him. The European Union has form on this: it has done it before in relation to Ireland, in relation to Denmark.”

He said that Britain would be “sorely missed” by the EU and added: “That is why I think the European Union’s leaders would say, if we did vote to leave, ‘Let’s have some more talks’.”

THE ever-popular Las Galletas half-marathon, celebrating its 20th year, takes place on 3rd April, and registration is now under way.

The event, which began in 1996, is part of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation’s national calendar. The 2015 race had a record entry of 1,250, and organisers this year are hoping to attract 1,500 runners.

Juan Sebastian Roque, Arona Sports Councillor, said: “The event marks two decades of our celebration of athletics and sport.

This has been the starting point for hundreds of runners from Arona, who have stepped into the world of running.

“We want to promote sport for all, and promote our town among athletes.”

In recent years the

half-marathon, almost 22km, has also incorporated a 10.8km race for novices. There are various races, including veteran and senior categories, along with junior competitions.

The race starts at Salazar Gonzalez Street and finishes in the Rambla, of Las Galletas.

Time for Telefonica will change? be raking it in SPAIN could be switching to Greenwich Mean Time, which would align the mainland to Britain and Tenerife.

The change may form a central part of Spain’s long-running negotiations to form a new government.

December’s Spanish election left voters with no clear winner, and none of the parties has been yet able to come together to form a coalition.

But the Ciudadanos leader has agreed to support the Socialists with a number of condi-

tions and one of these is that Spain switches to GMT. Spain was in line with Ireland and Britain, but it changed to Central Europe time in 1942 in a move by dictator General Franco to match Nazi Germany.

Since then, many Spanish people have complained about their time zone, saying it has left them out of step with the natural sunrise and sunset, and that it has put the country in a permanent state of semi-jetlag.

A 2013 report recommended that the country move to the same time as neighbours Portugal and the UK.

TELECOMS group Telefonica is anticipating a revenue increase of more than 4% this year. It also believes it will stabilise its profit margin and pay its dividend fully in cash.

The news follows the company’s sale of O2, its British unit. Revenue rose 8.7% last year to 47.2bn euros, thanks to German and Latin

American operations, and an improvement in its domestic market.

Yet core profit fell by a larger-than-expected 17.2% to 11.41bn euros, through one-off charges.

But, with the exclusion of restructuring charges, costing 3.5bn euros, Telefonica says core profit would have increased by 3.6%.

The communications giant is still facing the legacy of Spain’s deep, economic crisis in Spain, having spent the

past four years reorganising around fewer but stronger businesses, and cutting its debt.

The company listed a 2.9bn euro charge in the final quarter of 2015 to fund its staff-cutting plan. It also had 256m euros in charges related to operations’ restructuring in Latin America, Germany, Spain and

others.It made other accounting adjustments worth 23m euros, and set aside 325m euros for foundation financing.

But though Telefonica’s debt is still of concern, it was stable on 49.9bn euros at 31st December, compared with 49.7bn at the end of 2014.

Unemployment still falling THE jobless tally continues to fall in the Canary Islands as the latest figures reveal more good news.

Officially, the number of registered unemployed fell by 2,352 people in February, a 1% drop against January’s figure.

There are now 243,632 people out of work, according to data released by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security.

In the last 12 months, registered unemploy-

ment has decreased in the archipelago by 15,055 people, or 5.82%.

Unemployment fell in the islands from January, mainly in the service sector, which recorded 1,973 fewer unemployed.

Out-of-work declines also occurred in the construction sector (540 less), and industry, down 74.

By provinces, the unemployed registered in Santa Cruz de Tenerife fell by 1,226 people and by 1,126 in Las Palmas.

‘We’ll sort out the Teide crimewave’

CANARIAN Weekly wrote last week about the sharp increase of crime in Teide National Park. And now something is being done.

Canary Islands minister, Enrique Hernández Bento this week met with business leaders in the South and assured them that the Guardia Civil will “make a major effort to increase its presence in the viewpoints around Teide”.

In recent weeks, there has been a big increase in tourists’ vehicle thefts, which has led to seven municipalities in

the region to seek more vigilance.

This week, Bento announced that he was co-ordinating with local police and the Cabildo, to achieve a solution. He said “We cannot just sit and watch this happen. Police have identified and detained these thieves who are repeat offenders.”

The minister also met with the Guardia Civil and National Police, in a meeting requested by representatives of Ashotel and the Forum of Friends of the South of Tenerife.

At the meeting, Hernandez Bento promised to “send a detailed report on the evolution of crime specified in this part of the island.”

Injured turtle returns to sea LORO Parque Foundation has this week released a rescued Caretta turtle at La Nea beach (El Rosario). It had been in recovery in the Parque’s facilities since mid2015.

Loro Parque Fundación’s instructors and veterinarians offered a talk to raise awareness among El Sobradillo High School’s 8th-grade students as part of the Marine Conservation Week activities.

The scheme is co-ordinated by the Foundation with many educational centres in the Canarian region.

During the sea animal’s recovery months, its health improvements were recorded, thanks to Loro Parque Fundación and Loro Parque’s veterinary experts.

They have been moni-

toring weight and size gain, mobility recovery of a damaged fin and the turtle’s correct buoyancy.

This particular animal, commonly known as the “loggerhead turtle”, was rescued and transferred to Loro Parque in August last year.

Some health problems were noted, relating to

reduced mobility because her left fin been been entangled, which reduced her survival ability.

Her release enables Loro Parque Fundación to reinforce its association with marine environment, as well as its collaboration with Fauna Rescue Centres, which can be

called out to attend to some 200 turtles in Canarian shores each year.

Since 1994, this international, non-profit foundation helps those animals damaged by marine pollution, collisions with ships or accidental catch, to return to their natural environment.

ADEJE will be going green for St Patrick’s Day this year, and also hosting a number of official events.

From 6pm on 17th March, the day itself, there will be a small ceremony on the steps of the Convento de San Francisco, in the town’s main street.

There, the Mayor and Town Councillors will hand over the statue of Ireland’s patron saint to representatives of the Irish community, including recently-appointed honorary Irish consul Álvaro de la Bárcena Argany.

To the strains of the Irish National Anthem, the statue will be carried to Santa Ursula church, where Holy Mass will be celebrated

in English and Spanish.

Afterwards, there will be a fun buffet dinner, at Costa Adeje Centre for Tourism Development, organised by the local St Patrick’s Day committee.

There will be some local Irish dancing performances, more dancing and a bar after the din-

ner, when you’ll have a chance to let your hair down and toast one of the most internationally-celebrated national days in the calendar.

They can’t stay away THE tourism boom continues in the Canaries, and 2016 has started with a bang, more than one million international visitors touching down in the archipelago in January.

This accounted for nearly 30% of all Spain’s international arrivals, according to Frontur’s Survey of Tourist Movements, as revealed by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

By markets, the UK led with 29.9%, followed by 24.9% from the Nordic market.

Meanwhile, Spain exceeded the historical peak of last year’s January with 3.5 million foreign tourists, up by 11.2%.

The UK and France improved their figures from a year ago by 16.2% and 8.5% respectively, while Germany recorded a slight decrease (-0.3%).

But in absolute terms, Switzerland recorded the highest increase, with 36.7% more than in January 2015, a huge 80,248-visitor bonus.

It was followed by Ireland and Portugal which, respectively, registered 23.3% and 18,5% increases.

By contrast, tourist figures from the US fell by 9% and Russia’s dropped by 2.5%.

The UK, the main market for Spain, had 706,275 visitors, followed by France, which accounted for 13.5% of the total (473,225), a 13.5% increase in the number of arrivals.

Germany, the thirdlargest market, saw a decrease of 0.3% in the first month of 2015, with 460,117 tourists, which was 13.1% of the total.

Crisis in the NHS

STATISTICS obtained by the BBC show the scale of the NHS recruitment crisis. Tens of thousands of nursingand-doctor posts are vacant in the UK, and more than two-thirds of trusts and health boards are trying to recruit from abroad.

Officials are saying that the NHS has more staff than ever, but the NHS is struggling to cope with a shortage of qualified staff, even though officials say is has more staff than ever. But health unions blame poor work-force planning for the situation.

Data from a BBC Freedom of Information request shows that on 1st December 2015, the NHS in England, Wales and Northern Ireland had more than 23,443 nursing vacancies equivalent to 9% of the workforce.

The average vacancy rate across the UK economy, from November to January 2016, was 2.7% according to the Office for National Statistics.

The figures, which include 106 out of 166 trusts and health boards in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, also revealed: *Between 2013 and 2015, there has been a 50% increase in nursing vacancies, from 12,513 to 18,714. *The number of doctor vacancies went from 2,907 to 4,669 - an increase of around 60%. *In England and Wales, there were 1,265 vacancies for registered nurses in emergency departments - 11% of the total. *For consultants in emergency medicine, there were 243 vacancies - also 11% of the total. *Paediatric consultants (specialists in the care of babies, children and young people) were also hard to recruit, with 221 vacancies - some 7% of the total.

There are many reasons for the large num-

ber of vacancies in nursing-and-doctor posts in hospitals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

More posts now exist, but the number of trainees has not kept up.

Nursing places were cut after the 2008 financial crash, although they are now increasing.

The British Medical Association (BMA) suggests it takes around 15 years for a medical student, from starting out at university, to become a consultant. So planning the NHS workforce supply and demand is a complicated process.

Across the UK, there are increasing pressures to which the NHS is having to respond, including a growing population which is older, and sicker.

Health needs are more complex, and an elderly person might be having to cope with arthritis, diabetes and heart problems.

One other important factor is the “Francis effect”. The scandal at Stafford Hospital, which identified a shortage of nurses as a key factor in the poor care of patients, was outlined in a report by Sir Robert Francis.

In particular, trusts in England have been under pressure to recruit more workers. But when there is a shortage of qualified nurses, they have recruited expensive agency staff, which has sparked a growing financial crisis.

Vacancy rates in Scotland are published quarterly, so comparable data is not yet available.

The BBC figures show that 69% of all NHS trusts and health boards are seeking staff overseas. And in England and Wales, the figure is 74% of all trusts and health boards.

Some recruits are travelling from as far afield as India and the Philippines.

Maca Fernandez Carro, a nurse from Bilbao in Spain, has worked at Royal Bolton Hospital since 2014.

She told BBC Radio 5 live: “There were no opportunities for us back home. The options were having a three-month contract, or coming

here with a permanent position.

“Nursing is so different back home. When we qualify, we are expected to do all the techniques for which you would need extra training in the UK. “We do a four-year degree here, instead of one over three years, so we have an extra year, during which we learn the technical part of nursing. But even though we are really under pressure and stressed, I like working for the NHS.” Matthew Hopkins, Chief Executive of Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that employing more agency workers compromised patient safety and care.

“The difficulty with running a relativelyhigh vacancy rate is that it does inhibit the ability to provide the best care for our patients,” he said.

“We have to supplement our staff with agency workers who are not regularly part of the team, so the quality of teamwork, which we know has the biggest impact on patient care and safety, is compromised.”

Ian Cummings, Chief Executive of Health Education England, told the Today programme that the nursing shortage in the NHS had been partly caused by “quality failings” - such as the Mid Staffs scandal.

“The quality failings in the NHS have caused our regulators and hospitals to look very carefully at how many nurs-

es they need, to deliver safe and high quality care,” he added.

“So the hospitals, for roughly the same number of beds compared with three years ago, now have a need for 24,000 more qualified nurses.”

The Royal College of Nursing and the BMA blame poor workforce planning for the problems hospitals are having in finding qualified staff.

Janet Davies, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing,

said: “Nursing posts are often the first target when savings need to be made.

“That leads to the NHS finding itself dangerously short, and having to spend more on agency staff, and recruitment from other countries.”

A spokesman for the BMA, currently locked in a dispute with the Government over a new contract for junior doctors, said: “Poor workforce planning means we aren’t producing enough doctors and

sending them to the right areas.”

The Department of Health in England said: “Staffing is a priority.

That is why, since May 2010, there are more than 29,600 extra clinical staff, including more than 10,600 additional doctors and more than 10,600 additional nurses, on our wards.”

The statement also acknowledged that “much more needs to be done”, and that the Government was “changing student nursing, midwifery and allied healthprofessionals funding to create up to 10,000 more training places by the end of this Parliament”.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “There are now more doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics and dental staff working in the Welsh NHS today than there were 10 years ago.

“We will continue to do all we can to support recruitment initiatives proposed by health boards and trusts, and to address recruitment and retention at a national level.”

Lower Energy prices upset Central Bank MORE pressure has been inflicted on the European Central Bank with the announcement that eurozone consumer prices fell steeply last month to -0.2%.

It is a sharp reversal from the revised 0.3% increase recorded in January, and the first inflation drop since last September, when it shrank by 0.1%, according to Eurostat.

Energy drove the decline, with prices down 8% in February, compared with January’s 5.4% slide.

The dismal figures have scotched hopes that ECB efforts to boost prices were working. That raises the chance of the bank announcing more stimulus measures this month.

It has already an-

nounced a cut to its bank deposit rate, which remains in negative territory.

Mario Draghi, the ECB chief, was adamant earlier in February that the policies were working.

It is not the first time the eurozone inflation had slid below zero, and, again, price-falls are driven by lower energy costs. But the weakness is widespread.

The EU statistical agency’s patchy breakdown shows every category having lower inflation than in the previous month. The highest, for services, is just 1% - well short of the European Central Bank’s target of below, but close to, 2%.

The ECB has already decided to review its policy next week. The deflation news means the review will probably lead to more action to get inflation back up towards the target.

That means some

combination of more quantitative easing: buying financial assets with newly-created money or taking some of the ECB’s interest rates even further below zero.

Nordea economist Holger Sandte said: “Deflation would be a disaster for the euro area because the burden of high debt would increase. Therefore, the ECB will continue easing monetary policy significantly.

“But no matter what the ECB decides to do on 10th March (Thursday), inflation is likely to hover around zero during the next few months before it picks up - if oil prices behave well.”

The European Commission’s Group of 20 (G20) finance ministers and central bankers agreed last Saturday to use “all policy tools, monetary, fiscal and structural - individually and collectively- to renew growth”.

Golden-oldies have that top-of-the-world feeling Bumbling artefact gang couldn’t find their spoils FOURTEEN men, part of an international crime gang who committed a series of offences spanning four months, have been convicted of conspiracy to steal high-value artefacts worth up to £57m from museums across England.

The men, aged between 26 and 68, plotted to steal 24 artefacts, with as many as 18 never recovered.

Six members of the same family were involved in the conspiracy, including Richard Sheridan, the former spokesman for travellers fighting eviction from Dale Farm in Essex.

The 47-year-old, from Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, was convicted, along with his father, John ‘Cash’ O’Brien, 68, of Wolverhampton, Daniel ‘Turkey’ O’Brien, 45, John ‘Kerry’ O’Brien, 26, Michael Hegarty, 43 - all from Cottenham - and Richard ‘Kerry’ O’Brien, 31, from Dale Farm, Billericay.

They were convicted with eight other men, of conspiracy to steal rhino horns, items manufactured from rhino horn and Chinese porcelain.

The gang initially targeted rhino horns because they can be worth three times the price of gold, at 60,000 euros (£46,850) a kilo.

They then recognised the value in oriental artefacts at a time when the Chinese economy was booming.

The “fence”, or middle man, was 56-yearold property developer Donald Chi Chong Wong, who lived at London’s Clapham Common and was in-

volved in smuggling to China.

In January 2012, a man hired by the gang attempted to steal a Ming Dynasty sculpture from the Oriental Museum in Durham.

He stuffed the artefact into a rucksack and sprinted off before being apprehended by staff.

A month later, four men working for the gang tried to steal a rhino horn from the Castle Museum in Norwich.

But it was labelled a “fiasco” in court because they dropped the rhino head as it was too heavy.

In March 2012, three raiders made a mistake by running off with a bamboo cup worth under £1,000 after jumping over the counter during a viewing day at Gorringes Auction House in Lewes, East Sussex.

They had been ordered to steal a £60,000 rhino horn libation cup and, anyway, members of the public intervened and the trio were arrested nearby.

The gang struck twice in April, at Durham’s Oriental Museum again, and at Cambridge University’s Fitzwilliam Museum.

On 5th April, they smashed a hole in the wall of the Oriental Museum and stole a £2m jade bowl and a figurine, worth £175,000.

The items were left at a previously agreed “deposition site” on wasteland near the Meadowfield Industrial Estate. But the thieves failed to recover the artefacts after numerous attempts to find them on the site.

Police eventually located them eight days later and, in court, prosecutor Robert Davie described the theft as a “steal-it, can’t-find-it” failure.

He added: “It all came to nothing when they had not - pirate style - put a cross on a map.”

A week after the Durham theft, the gang targeted the Fitzwilliam Museum, stealing 18 jade pieces, worth £15m.

Footage on CCTV showed three men and a 16-year-old breaking in, while the items were transported from the scene by car and taxi and never recovered.

The following year, in September 2013, police raided 30 locations in the West Midlands, London, Sussex, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Northern Ireland.

Operation Griffin, which led to three trials in all, lasting 27 weeks, was a covert, four-year police investigation.

Det Supt Adrian Green, of Durham Police, said the gang would hire-in accomplices to carry out the raids.

He added that the investigation into those higher up the chain meant trawling through huge amounts of data, linking them to the crimes.

“We would visit locations we had identified that they may have been, and search through hotel records, find booking in forms and look for forensic opportunities,” he said.

“We also linked it to fixed-penalty tickets, telephone calls they have made to different people, insurance companies, etc, to try to attribute telephone numbers, phones, hotel bookings to these individuals.”

One man has already been sent to prison, and the other 13 will be sentenced at a later date. Another gang member, 35-year-old Ashley Alan Dad, who was found guilty last year, is still on the run.

A NATIONAL survey has shown that the wellbeing of those in their sixties increases as they approach their eighth decade, even though many people suffer from at least one chronic illness, before they reach 70.

Those participating were asked to rate how cheerful, confident, useful and relaxed they felt in their early sixties, and then again when they were aged 68-69.

A survey by the Medical Research Council tracked the health and well-being of 1,700 people from birth.

When the responses of those aged 60 to 64 were compared with their

feelings towards the end of their seventh decade, it was discovered that there was an overall, average improvement in all aspects of well-being.

This mirrors the results of previous studies, which found that people in their age group were more content than those in their fifties.

A recent survey of UK adults showed that those aged 65-79 were the happiest age group.

And those aged 45-59 reported the lowest levels of life satisfaction.

Dr Mai Stafford, programme leader at the MRC’s unit for lifelong health and ageing at University College London, said it was unclear what was behind the rise in well-being during people’s sixties.

“We found that onein-five experienced a substantial increase in well-being in later life, although we also found

a smaller group who experienced a substantial decline,” she said.

“The benefit of using a cohort study like this is that we can look at how individuals change over time. We hope this will allow us to pinpoint which common experiences may be linked to an improvement in wellbeing in later life.”

She added that in their sixties and seventies, people were more likely to prioritise social relationships and to look after their mental health.

Starbucks heads to the home of coffee STARBUCKS, striding confidently into Italy with its first store, still pledges to enter the espresso birthplace “with humility and respect”.

The first shop opens in Milan early next year, in partnership with Italian developer, Percassi.

Its President, Antonio Percassi, said: “We know we are going to face a unique challenge in Italy, the country of coffee.

“But we are confident that Italian people are ready to live the Starbucks experience, as

already occurs in many other markets.”

Howard Schultz, Starbucks’ Chairman and Chief Executive, was inspired to set up an American coffee shop during a trip to Milan in the Eighties, when he saw locals gathered at coffee bars.

His company now has 22,000 outlets in 67 countries, and Schultz said: “The dream of the company has always been to complete the circle sometime and open in Italy.

But we haven’t been

ready until now.”

Despite its long, cultural and historical links with coffee - the espresso machine was invented there - Italy is only the seventh-largest consumer of the beverage in Europe.

Schultz said the Milan store would be designed with “painstaking attention to detail, to honour the Italian people and their coffee culture”.

He added: “Visually, it has to be a very seductive place, where Starbucks comes alive.”

Wednesday 9th March, BBC2, 21.00 On 13 March 1996 a gunman walked into a primary school in the small Scottish town of Dunblane, near Stirling, and shot dead 16 pupils and their teacher in a Primary 1 gym class. To date it is the deadliest firearms atrocity in the UK. In a poignant film to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, Dunblane: Our Story features interviews many people who have never before talked on camera about what happened on that day. This compelling documentary features - for the first time - testimony from a survivor who was shot as a five year-old and who details her terrifying experience.

Other interviewees include Ron Taylor, the headmaster of Dunblane Primary School at the time of the shootings. This is the first time he has spoken in depth about that day since he faced the world’s media in the days after the atrocity - at press conferences which he memorably handled with dignity and under enormous pressure.

Gwen Mayor was the primary teacher who was shot dead as she attempted to protect the children. Her daughter Debbie recalls the horrific day and her pride in her courageous mother. Two young women from separate families talk movingly about the sisters they never knew and the gap it has left in their lives.

Other contributors include parents of the survivors and the deceased. Between them, they construct a powerful exploration on whether time can heal all wounds and love can triumph over evil.

BBC1, 17:20 Fly-on-the-wall documentary series which follows the life of English magician-illusionist Steven Frayne, better known as Dynamo, as he travels around the world performing jaw-dropping magic. Daily life in the UK is becoming too much for Dynamo, so he escapes to Rio where he can go back to basics. Whilst taking in the sights of the Rio carnival, he works his way up from the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, through a favela, right up to Christ the Redeemer which stands 700 metres high in the Tijuca National Forest.

Queen Victoria’s Children BBC2, 19:30 In a 60-year family saga, this three-part series explores the reign of Queen Victoria through her personal relationships with her husband and her nine children. It is a story of manipulation, conflict, intimidation, emotional blackmail and fevered attempts by her children to escape the clutches of their domineering and needy mother. The series uses a wealth of written material and photos left by Victoria, Albert and their children, including letters, diaries, memoirs and journals, to bring the subject and characters to life. This episode concentrates on Victoria’s relationship with her daughters. It looks at how, after Albert’s death, Victoria clung to and bullied them and arranged their marriages. In response, the princesses fought back, becoming independent women determined to find love and fresh purpose. From sculpture to medicine, the daughters became champions of women for a new era.

The cast also includes Alison Brie, who played Trudy Campbell in the acclaimed US series Mad Men, Olivier and Tony award winner Richard McCabe (Indian Summers, The Great Fire, Peaky Blinders), Phoebe Nicholls (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Fortitude, Downton Abbey), Gwyneth Keyworth (Game of Thrones, Misfits), Kate O’Flynn (No Offence, Ordinary Lies), Edward Franklin (The Brain Hack, Doctors) and introduces two newcomers Stefanie Martini and Harry Richardson.

Tom Hollander (Rev, A Poet In New York, Pirates of the Caribbean) takes the role of Dr Thomas Thorne, who lives in the village of Greshamsbury in Barsetshire with his young niece, Mary (Stefanie Martini), a girl blessed with every gift except money. Mary Thorne has grown up alongside the Gresham family, whose house, Greshamsbury Park, and status dominate the county. With Francis Gresham Senior (Richard McCabe) having frittered away the family fortune, however, his wife, Lady Arabella Gresham, played by Rebecca Front (War and Peace, Humans, Lewis, The Thick of It), their daughters Augusta (Gwyneth Keyworth) and Beatrice (Nell Barlow), and their handsome brother Frank (Harry Richardson) face losing their home.

1855. When Doctor Thorne’s penniless niece, Mary, is excluded from the wedding preparations of her childhood playmate, she probes her uncle for the truth of her birth.

She is devastated to learn that she is the illegitimate child of his late brother. It seems she has neither breeding nor fortune. This is a problem, as Mary and the heir to the Greshamsbury Estate, Frank, have fallen in love.

Frank is under strict instructions from his over‐bearing mother, Lady Arabella, to save his family from financial ruin by marrying money.

Frank’s mother schemes to separate the two lovebirds, encouraging her son to woo the wealthy American heiress, Miss Dunstable.

Meanwhile, Doctor Thorne acts as both physician and business advisor to railway millionaire, Sir Roger Scatcherd, in whose hands the fate of Greshamsbury lies, and who is rapidly drinking himself into an early grave.

Chris and Xand join the volunteers patrolling the coastline and the beaches, helping those who have just landed before they are ferried

by UN bus to a registration camp.

At the registration camp, Xand visits a clinic and meets some of those being treated by volunteer doctors before they continue their journey. Frostbite, injury from sea urchins, trenchfoot and respiratory and psychological problems are prevalent.

Xand heads to Athens to follow the migrants’ route to mainland Europe. He meets Qusai, a Syrian man with brittle bone disease whose bones can easily fracture, who survived the boat journey from Turkey, despite having his wheelchair taken by people smugglers.

Chris travels ahead to the next stages of the migrant journey, the Greek-Macedonian border and then on to the Serbian-Macedonian border where around 2,000 people are arriving per day - with some having to walk four kilometres through snow to be registered at a Serbian camp.

He then journeys to Berlin to visit a registration centre where migrants begin the asylum process and a former airport - Templehof - that has been converted into emergency shelters for the thousands of recent arrivals.

The key destination for migrants who want to reach the UK is Calais. Xand visits a clinic run by volunteer doctors to see how the lack of hygiene and infrastructure and overcrowding in the camp known as ‘the Jungle’ are impacting the health of the thousands of people who have ended up here.

In Dunkirk, on the coast of northern France, Xand visits Europe’s newest migrant camp and a makeshift clinic run by a medical charity. The camp only sprung up in the last few months but Xand says it is has the worst conditions he has ever seen.

After two weeks on the migrant trail Chris meets up with Xand in Calais to reflect on what they have seen, before travelling back to the UK.

Hosted by renowned gardener and ITV Daytime favourite Alan Titchmarsh, Masterpiece With Alan Titchmarsh is a unique new game show taking place in some of the most stunning stately homes across Britain.

The brand new series, which was the brainchild of Alan himself, sees teams comprised of antique and history fans go head to head in a series of challenges. From valuing antiques to deciphering the age of a collectible, the contestants must use their amateur antique skills to secure their position in the ‘Masterpiece Gallery’.

Once they enter the ‘Masterpiece Gallery’, each team must work out which of the three objects on display is the true ‘Masterpiece’, an item so exquisite or rare that it is worth £10,000 or more and add it to their collection.

The team that has successfully collected the most ‘Masterpieces’ wins a one thousand pound prize.

This Farming Life

BBC2, 19:00 This Farming Life is a major new 12-part documentary series following the struggles and triumphs of five very different farming families in some of Scotland’s most beautiful and remote landscapes.

It is late autumn and the farmers are on the move.

In the west of Scotland in Argyll, husband and wife sheep farmers George and Sybil set off to gather in their sheep from over six square miles of rugged mountainside. It is an emotional day when Sybil has to then take some of them to market. In the east of Scotland, soon-to-be-wed couple Martin and Mel introduce their newly-purchased rams to their flock of ewes - but has Mel chosen well? They also visit the humanist celebrant who will perform their wedding to try and agree on their wedding vows. In the far north, beyond Inverness, John heads to market to teach his 13-year-old son James how to buy a good flock of ewes.

The second of two new episodes of the long-running project following remarkable children growing up with disabilities.

The children are approaching their 16th year and being disabled is an added complication to an already anxious time for teenagers. Hamish, who now lives in New Zealand, has achondroplasia, commonly called dwarfism.

After being spotted by the New Zealand paraswimming team, Hamish has now qualified to represent New Zealand at the world championships in Glasgow, a stepping stone to the Rio Olympics.

As he prepares to travel to the US for a training camp, his proud mum Claire hopes he won’t be out ‘partying all night’. Becoming independent is high on the agenda for most teenagers, but for the Born to Be Different children and their families it’s doubly complicated. Zoe has arthrogry posis, a condition that severely disables her legs and arms.

Geordie and Cathy [Kacey Ainsworth] are on a mission to find Sidney a girlfriend – but nobody seems to be good enough for the choosy vicar. Geordie’s plans are further thwarted when Sidney’s old flame, Amanda Hopkins [Morven Christie] arrives in Grantchester while Guy is away on business.

Geordie calls on Sidney for help following an apparent suicide at Sidney’s old Cambridge College. Valentine Lyall, a fellow at Corpus Christi, has been found dead: the result of a long fall from the spire of King’s College chapel. His wife, Mya [Lourdes Faberes], is consoled by Valentine’s star pupil, Kit Bartlett [Matthew Tennyson] who used to partake in daredevil climbs of the college buildings alongside his mentor. But both are convinced that Valentine was too happy and content for it to be suicide. Kit’s alibi is Russian Tutor, Professor Raban [Tim McMullan], who is mentoring a chippy student and wannabe Marxist called Rory Crompton [Josh Bolt] when Sidney and Geordie arrive to question him. They receive an even cooler welcome from Master Giles Montgomery [Nigel Planer] who remembers Sidney from his student days – and still resents him for an unmentioned past transgression.

It appears to be a case of a night climbing misadventure until they discover a student witness who saw someone push Lyall to his death. Hastily burnt papers and unexplained bloody handkerchiefs lead Sidney and Geordie deeper and deeper into a web of espionage and secrets. Who is the mysterious woman watching them? Why is Geordie so unnerved by this case? And will police secretary Margaret Ward [Seline Hizli] finally be the woman to break Sidney’s run of bad dates?

Four Sport Relief volunteers agree to sleep rough on the streets of London to experience the harsh reality of homelessness in the UK. Comedian Nick Hancock, TV presenter Julia Bradbury, former snooker player Willie Thorne and celebrity cleaner Kim Woodburn all struggle with isolation, fear, the cold and wet and the effort of dayto-day survival.

For each volunteer the streets become a test of strength and selfreliance, and not everybody copes.

They start to examine their own lives and their own relationships with homelessness: Willie has gambled hundreds of thousands of pounds away during a 40year gambling addiction and has just gone bankrupt, while Kim survived being homeless herself as a teenager and has strong opinions on how deserving of help or not the homeless are in the UK. This social experiment, led by The Big Issue founder John Bird, aims to expose the realities of an increasing homeless problem in the UK.

The story of three pickpocketing sisters raised in 1830s Shoreditch, in the heart of London’s criminal underworld, and how two of them were banished to England’s ‘thief colony’.

Among the girls’ Australian descendants are two Supreme Court Judges and a Government Premier, while the descendants of the sister left behind in England are a bin man and a window cleaner. The incredible true story of the Gadbury girls and the generations that followed them is told by their descendants.

Arla Beckman is missing. A wealthy American who founded Liferaft, a philanthropic charity organisation for helping kids in trouble, she’s known to be having an extramarital affair with divorced English aristocrat Dominic Cotterall.

Dominic (Sebastian Armesto, pictured) has a reputation as a hellraiser. He’s been in and out of rehab for two decades and his relationship with his father Greville has suffered, to the extent that the older man is trying to bar him from inheriting the family’s lands and title.

Arla’s close colleague and friend Bryony Phelps is a poster girl for Liferaft. A former client and now one of the charity’s leading lights, she is convinced that Arla’s disappearance is down to Dominic Cotterall and takes to social media to say as much, prompting a sceptical detective DCI Mirella Goss to take up the case.

Appalled that Dominic is once again responsible for the family name being dragged through the mud, Greville Cotterall turns to his lawyers.

And as DCI Goss pieces together the fragments of the protagonists’ lives she begins to suspect that Bryony’s accusations are not simply the rantings of a hysterical young woman - and Dominic is compelled to seek the support of a father and a family he has always shunned.

Bear Grylls: Mission Survive ITV1, 21.00

Seven celebrities battle through the wilds of Southern Africa on an uncompromising 12 day survival expedition. They are pushed to their psychological and physical limits to see who has the heroic qualities needed to become Bear’s Mission Survivor.

In the second programme, the six remaining celebrities start the day without breakfast having decided to conserve their dwindling military rations. They trek to meet Bear, who delivers their first mission of the day. The group head off into the Karoo mountain range to locate a dead springbok.

They need to retrieve the carcass, which has been placed high up in a tree, divide it into pieces, and each carry it in their rucksacks across a leopard crawl – two lines suspended 50ft above a rocky ravine. Anybody who fails to get across successfully, keeping hands and feet on the ropes, will have to sacrifice their meat.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

Don’s Elvis cracks it WE headed out of town to the Terrace Bar on Amarilla Golf for the second heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke.

The biggest Karaoke/ talent competition in the South of Tenerife, organised by Oasis Fm, attracted singers galore, all in search of the elusive Final place in June - and that 1,000-euro prize.

What we did learn from this heat is that you don’t necessarily need to have the best voice on the night, but the total overall package.

Voice, stage presence and interpretation these are the main ingredients, the categories on which contestants are judged, with marks awarded out of 30, 10 and 10 respectively.

The venue was packed with plenty of support for each competitor, creating

a terrific atmosphere for all the performers.

And they didn’t disappoint!

The event was kicked off by Monova, who belted out a Led Zeplin classic to set the standard for the rest of the evening.

The contestants gave it their all, and our four judges had the difficult job of separating them because there were a number of singers who could, potentially, have made it to the sing-off stage.

We even saw 2012 Tenerife Loves Karaoke winner Yasmin Khan perform I’d Rather Go Blind by Etta James during the break.

It was an excellent prelude to the heat finalists being announced, to a standing ovation, even from Andy behind the bar Gordon Slayney, from Oasis Fm, who is compering this year’s competition, then announced the three heat finalists:

Billy, who sang Justin Bieber’s Sorry, Don’s Elvis Presley classic Viva Las Vegas, and Viktoria, singing Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.

And a triumphant Don Taylor, who won over the judges not only with his voice but also his stage presence and interpretation, joins Mauro Rodrigo Ferreira Da Silva

in the Grand Final at Showtime, Las Americas, in June.

DICAPRIO FINALLY WINS THAT OSCAR LEONARDO DiCaprio finally won his first Oscar on Sunday after six nominations, being named Best Actor at the Academy Awards in Hollywood for survival epic The Revenant.

Brie Larson was named Best Actress for Room after winning praise for her role as abducted woman Ma in Room, based on a book.

The Revenant won three of the 12 awards for which it was nominated, Alejandro Inarritu winning Best Director and Emmanuel Lubezki his third Oscar in a row for Cinematography, having won in 2015 for Birdman and 2014 for Gravity.

But DiCaprio bathed in the limelight, receiving a standing ovation as he picked up his award, after five acting nominations and one

nomination as producer of Best-Picture nominee Wolf of Wall Street.

He thanked his director and co-star Tom Hardy for his “fierce talent on-screen and friendship off-screen”, before campaigning for action to combat climate change, saying making The Revenant was “about man’s relationship to the natural world”.

DiCaprio said: “Climate change is real - it is happening right now.

It is the most urgent threat facing our species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.”

Spotlight took the Best Picture Oscar and Mad Max: Fury Road picking up the most awards, with six accolades.

Britain’s Mark Rylance won the Best Support-

ing Actor Oscar for his role in Steven Spielberg’s Cold War film Bridge of Spies, in which he plays Rudolf Abel, the real-life Soviet intelligence officer who was arrested in 1950s New York and prosecuted as a spy.

He is known for his long stage career and work on television, including playing Thomas Cromwell in the 2015 BBC Two mini-series Wolf Hall, and was the first artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.

Rylance said: “I’ve always adored stories, hearing them, seeing them, being in them.

So for me to have the chance to work with one of the greatest storytellers of our time, Steven Spielberg, has just been such an honour.”

His fellow-Brit Sam Smith, whose Writing’s

on the Wall song, composed by Jimmy Napes and featured in Bond film Spectre, earned them a joint award.

Smith dedicated it to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, saying: “I stand here tonight as a proud, gay man and I hope we can all stand together one day.”

Among the winners for Mad Max: Fury Road - nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Director for George Miller - was British designer Jenny Beavan, for best costume design.

Beavan, who had previously won an Oscar for Room with a View, said: “What another lovely day. It was a year of our lives in the Namibian desert, and we had the most amazing crew.

“It was an incredible experience - but it could

be horribly prophetic if we aren’t kinder to each other and don’t stop polluting our atmosphere.”

The film also won Oscars for production design, make-up and hairstyling, film editing, sound editing and sound mixing.

The Amy Winehouse documentary, Amy, won the Best Documentary Feature Oscar for British film-makers Asif Kapadia and James GayRees.

Kapadia said of the late singer: “This film is about Amy and showing the world who she really was, not the tabloid persona. We just wanted to make a film to show the world who she really was.”

Gay-Rees added: “This is for the fans who loved her through thick and thin - that’s all she ever needed.”

Irish director Benjamin Cleary and Serena Armitage won the Best Live Action Short Oscar for Stutterer, about a man with a severe stammer. “Every day is a proud day to be Irish, but today even more so,” said Cleary.

By Vanessa Vee MY Mum is here on holiday this week, so we’ve been out and about. And we decided to give a FREE “blanket trip” a whirl.

I’ve always been very dubious about these tours, because, let’s be honest, nothing in life is free, is it?

We were told that we’d be collected by coach, taken on a tour into some rural villages, and then to a showroom to view some therapeutic, bedding products.

A visit to a local village, to view the traditional Canarian culture, would follow, and we were offered a convenient pickup time of 9.35am. Sure enough, on the day, a large, double-decker coach arrived on time.

After a few more pickups, we wended our way up the roads and were given an interesting, running commentary, regarding Canarian lifestyle and traditions.

I have been a Tenerife resident for a number of years, but I still love to experience guided excursions. There is always some interesting fact, of which I was not aware.

Mum’s the word for blanket trips

the village of San Isidro (not via the motorway), taking in areas such as San Miguel, Los Zocas and Charco del Pino.

When we arrived, I was surprised to discover that it was the old Alabama’s venue. I’m sure a few old-timers will recall that excursion from years ago. I think it must have been 22 years since I was there, and, believe me, it has changed somewhat!

We sat around tables of four and were treated

to a cake and a choice of PG Tips tea, coffee or a soft drink - pleasant refreshments. And the tea was actually made in a teapot!

The lady giving the demonstration introduced herself, and made a joke about locking the door, keeping us there for four hours until we’d bought a timeshare!

Lots of light-hearted humour kept us alert, while some fascinating bedding was demonstrated. I know you

are probably thinking, “Get a life, Vee”, but we learned some interesting facts we had taken for granted and hadn’t really considered, but which could have affected our long-term health.

It was extremely calm and friendly, with a pleasant ambience and no heavy sales-talk or pressure. Re-assuringly, had we wanted to purchased any products, no deposit or payments would have been tak-

en on the day. And no bank-account numbers, etc, were required.

The idea is that you simply order, and only when your products are received - and you have checked them over - do you pay up.

After the demonstration, we were given an opportunity to sample the local Ron Miel tipple. We were given a free gift, and there was a raffle into which we were entered, with products as prizes.

And there was still more!

Back to the coach, and a short journey up to the village of Granadilla. Luckily for us, the local produce market was on. There were, literally, just five stalls, but I always love to purchase local fare.

Then, I spotted the cheese stall. In the UK, if we were given a sample of cheese to taste, it was just a slither. Not this guy: he was chopping off chunks, and there was no way we could have resisted. It was reasonably-priced and extremely tasty.

Among other things, Granadilla offers picturesque, cobbled streets, quaint courtyards, an ancient convent, an art gallery and a museum.

After a mooch around, it was back on the coach, and then home.

Ensure you’re insured

THE National Traffic Authority (DGT) has onthe-spot means of checking that a vehicle has, at least, the obligatory Third Party Insurance, to be driven on a public highway.

Nearly two million motors throughout Spain

are uninsured, and the DGT’s objective is to stamp out this practice with fines, sanctions - or even scrapping them!

This is similar to the system now employed in the UK. Those who drive without insurance, or leave their vehicles without cover, are breaking the law and can face fines ranging from 600-3,000 euros, and have their machines immobilised!

Remember, driving without insurance cover is, potentially, putting lives at risk: the driver and passengers, plus other drivers and pedestrians.

During the past year, the DGT has imposed some 50,000 sanctions for this offence. Cardrivers have been fined 1,500 euros, and for those who drive buses and trucks, a whopping 2,800 euros - fortunes against the actual cost of insurance.

The Traffic Authority is currently monitoring the Insurance Register of vehicles, and spot-checking cars and drivers at various places.

So far, it has found that around 10% of vehicles registered since 1996 are uninsured, but not in baja - taken off the road legally.

Uninsured motorists are causing other drivers to pay higher premiums, with total disregard to potential consequences.

Each insurance policy pays a percentage of its premium to the insurance compensation body (CCS), which covers the costs of uninsured vehicles.

In turn, the CCS reclaims the money from the uninsured drivers.

People involved in accidents with uninsured drivers can face cash problems because the process can be longwinded, leaving them to find their way around

on public transport and, perhaps, jobless!

Owners who do not have insurance cover face fines of between 601-3,005 euros and seizure of their vehicle.

The sum will depend on the type of vehicle, and the circumstances involved.

In 2015, the DGT received 50,000 complaints regarding uninsured drivers.

For example, riding a moped without cover carries a fine of around 1,000 euros; motorcycles, 1,250; cars, 1,500, and, for trucks or buses, the penalty rises to 2,800 euros.

If unpaid, these fines

pass through the official notification system and end in embargoes to bank accounts, properties and/or vehicles.

The fine-collection authority is obliged to surrender 50% of the penalties levied to the CCS. That’s to help the traffic department deal with any compensation for accident victims if the vehicle causing the crash isn’t insured appropriately.

If you have a vehicle which is not used, you must complete a baja de matrícula certificate to ensure you don’t receive road-tax bills or traffic fines.

Wow, what an eye-opener!

THIS is not the first time we’ve eaten at a Bombay Babu restaurant, but it’s our first experience of dining at its La Tejita branch.

It is the sister restaurant to their Torviscas and Calleo Salvaje ventures and is located at the La Taita street market.

It has been open just a few months and boy, is it impressive! As soon as you walk in, you can tell that everything has been planned from scratch: the layout, décor, and the gorgeous, panoramic views.

As with the other Bombay Babu restaurants, we were met by an extremely polite and energetic front-ofhouse, who quickly sat us at a comfortable table.

One thing you can’t fail to notice is that this restaurant would not be out of place in any chic area of any modern city. The mood-lighting and modern furniture help give the establishment that “quality” feel.

As with any Indian meal, we began the evening with some Papadums and a pickle tray, followed by our starter, which was a Bombay Babu special.

This is a sharing platter of Chicken Tikka, Garlic King Prawns and Barra Kabab. All three

dishes were a real joy, with one item really standing out for me.

That was the remarkable Chicken Tikka, or Murgh Tikka - a mouthwatering starter which originates in South Asia and is baked in a clay oven or tandoor.

For the main course, I chose the Bombay Babu Pathia special, which is a mixture of chicken, lamb tikka and prawns.

My partner ordered a Chicken Korma, which is often-under-rated.

Indian food is never about heat, and this slow-cooked Korma had the perfect mixture of spices, including ground-coriander and

cumin, combined with yoghurt.

The Pathia is a popular curry, and I’ll bet you didn’t know it is normally served at special social functions, such as births or marriages, among India’s Parsi population. It is sometimes called Pathia as well.

This is a sweet-andsour, spicy curry - Gujarati curry spices with mango and coconut added. The spicy heat comes from fresh, green, hot-chilli peppers and dried, red-chilli peppers.

The dish is brightly coloured, and the mango flavour balances the spiciness of the tender

chicken really well. The portions were big and, as with all the Bombay Babu restaurants, reasonably priced.

To accompany the main dishes, we had some old favourites: Pilau Rice and a delicious Onion Nann. I had never tried that before, but it’s going to be a new favourite because I will be certainly be ordering it again.

I always remember one of the first things I saw on the menu when first visiting a Bombay Babu restaurant. It is what I can only describe as the company’s mission statement, which reads: “Our recipes are rich in tradition, and have tickled the pallets of the maharajas and kings of the Indian Sub Continent for generations.

“At Bombay Babu we do not serve fast-food.

We create excellent, fresh food that is served as fast as possible.”

And they have remained true to their word. This new restaurant fits comfortably into the Bombay Babu stable.

I would strongly recommend a visit to their website, which showcases the wide and varied menu options and also helps you decide on what to have if you want a delivery.

Sleep well – lose weight!

THEY have been back in fashion for a few years … and no more so than now. I’m talking BEARDS, which have ranged from stubble to Lumberjack style.

GETTING a good night’s sleep can help prevent you putting on weight, according to new research, compiled by the University of Chicago.

And they seem to be getting more stylish as they grow. But keeping on top of your beard can’t be easier if you check out these basic tips.

Facial hair is different from body or scalp hair because it’s nearly always coarser and gets unruly quickly.

But treat it well and it should always look groomed, even as it grows longer.

Wash longer beards with a moisturising hair

shampoo, and apply a little conditioner to keep away the frizzes.

Once you’re showered, apply a facial moisturiser, and rub some extra into the beard to maintain its softness.

An Argan Oil would also benefit the beard because this really penetrates the hair to soften and stop any irritations.

Keep a pair of small scissors and a comb handy to tame any stray hairs, and use small electric clippers as well to keep the desired shape under control.

If you’re no good at maintaining a longer

beard, ask your stylist to trim it back during a hair appointment.

They say that beards are stared at the bigger they are.

So if you are going to stand out from the crowd, make sure yours is always looking its best by following those easy tips.

If you are wearing your beard extra long, as is fashionable, make sure you aren’t carrying around bits of your lunch in it!

The new “Lumberjack” beard should look stylish and not scruffy, but it’s not for every face-shape or lifestyle.

RED-CARPET ROYALTY

By Carl Pattison THE Night of All Nights came to town in LA on Sunday as the annual Oscars’ ceremony rolled in again. And all the actors and actresses worth seeing were there to accept their nominations.

As for the others, they were there simply to be noticed at what is now THE most-prestigious event on the planet.

Countless designers threw dresses at all the most-highly nominated,

to ensure their label was attached to the winners.

Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence and Brie Larson were among the host of stars, and Lady Ga Ga looked so elegant in white, as did Naomi Watts. In fact, everyone shone!

Sequins strutted the carpet, adding a new cool to this year’s gowns, making sure that those who wore them sparkled into the night.

Some fashion houses chose to dress one star only, adding maximum impact to their name.

Others - like Valentino and Gucci - dressed the masses, ensuring

that each and every one stood out from the crowd.

Armani also had his army of followers, dressing actresses for the actual event, as well as for the pre-parties.

And for me, Jennifer Lawrence stole the show in the eye-popping number (pictured), which left just enough to the imagination.

All-in-all, a night to remember, because their night of fashion is turned into our highstreet fashion.

Oscars, we salute you for bringing out the best in this great world of fashion.

Its scientists have discovered that a lack of sleep helps us pile on the pounds because it triggers a lowering of self-control, which leads to the “munchies”.

The study also found that losing sleep led to an increase in hunger, making people more likely to binge on sugary snacks, or unhealthy junk food.

Skimping on sleep has previously been associated with over-eating, poor food choices and weight gain.

But this research, published in the Sleep journal, showed how a restless night started the process, amplifying and extending blood levels of a chemical signal which enhances the joy of eating, particularly the guilty pleasures gained from sweet or salty, high-fat snacks.

Fourteen young, healthy, sleep-deprived volunteers were unable to resist what the researchers called “highly-palatable, rewarding snacks - biscuits, chocolate and crisps - even though, just two hours earlier, they had eaten a meal that supplied 90% of their daily calorific needs.

The effects of sleep-

loss on appetite were most powerful in the late afternoon and early evening: times when snacking has been linked to weight gain.

Dr Erin Hanlon, of the University of Chicago, said: “We found that sleep-restriction boosts a signal that may increase the pleasure and satisfaction gained from eating.

“Sleep-restriction seems to augment the same system targeted by the active ingredient of marijuana, to enhance the desire for food intake.”

This chemical signal, known as 2-AG, is typically low in blood levels overnight. They slowly rise during the day, peaking in the early afternoon.

But when subjects in the study were sleepdeprived, levels rose higher and remained elevated through the evening, beyond the typical peak.

During that period, the volunteers reported higher scores for hunger, and a stronger desire to eat. And when given access to snacks, they ate nearly twice as much fat as when

they had slept for eight hours.

Dr Hanlon said of the increase in circulating 2-AG levels: “It could be a mechanism by which recurrent sleep restriction results in excessive food intake, particularly in the form of snacks, despite minimal increases in energy need.

“One study has reported that each added hour of wakefulness uses about 17 extra calories. That adds up to nearly 70 calories for the four hours of lost sleep.

“But, given the opportunity, the study subjects more than made up for it by bingeing on snacks, taking in more than 300 extra calories.

Over time, that can cause significant weight gain.”

She added: “If you have a Snickers bar, and you’ve had enough sleep, you can control your natural response.

“But if you’re sleep-deprived, your hedonistic drive for certain foods gets stronger, and your ability to resist them may be impaired. So you are more likely to eat it. Do that again and again, and you pack on the pounds.”

And here’s the Bad part

IN the final instalment of my three-part series, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of healthy eating, here I’m deal with the Bad.

These are the guys which don’t even pretend to be good for you - no disguises and no fake promises. There’s no nice way to say this just don’t eat them.

Or, only very, very rarely if you do, but be aware that they’re bad for you.

Here are six things that really don’t belong anywhere in a healthyeating lifestyle: 1. Fizzy drinks: Imagine melting down a bag of sweets and drinking it. That’s pretty much what you do every time you have a fizzy drink.

Despite very clever marketing, some of these drinks can have over 10 teaspoons of sugar hidden inside

a normal can. That’s way too much. They are also empty calories, of no nutritional value whatsoever.

And don’t kid yourself that diet versions are any better - they’re not. Tooth-rotting sugar is simply replaced with cancer-causing, artificial sweeteners.

Either way, it’s a loselose situation.

2. Processed meat: Bacon, hot dogs, sa-

lami, sausages and ham are some of the most popular meat products around. But they have been medically proven to increase greatly your chances of heart disease and type-2 diabetes, as well as certain types of cancer (particularly stomach and colon).

In terms of saturated fats, there isn’t much difference with unprocessed meats. The problem comes from the

massive salt and nitrate content of processed alternatives.

3. Deep-fried foods: Most of us, if we’re honest, love a bit of fried food. We also know it’s not good for us, but often we think that it’s because it will make us fat, which it will, if eaten regularly. But, there’s another danger, too. Cooking foods at such high temperatures sometimes alters their

structure, causing them to form toxic chemical compounds, which, unfortunately, we then eat.

This has been linked to health problems such as strokes, as well as a greater risk of cancers, including breast, lung, throat, pancreatic and prostate.

4. Margarine: This is often considered a healthier alternative to butter. It really, really isn’t. Margarine, full of

disease-forming trans fats, which have been proven to contribute to the development of diabetes and heart disease among other things, is an artificial, chemicalladen fat which is much worse for you than butter. Stay away from anything with partiallyhydrogenated oil on the label - it’s a synonym for trans-fats.

5. Doughnuts, cakes and pastries: They look great, and some of them taste amazing. No one’s denying that. But these pre-packaged minimuffins, doughnuts and cakes, however small they might appear, add a huge amount of calories, not to mention masses of sugar and fat, to your diet. They are also packed with preservatives for a longer shelflife. If you must have a cake, go for the homemade variety.

6. Processed cheese: The yellow, stringy stuff that feels quite a lot like plastic is not really cheese at all. It’s a chemical creation of a cheese-like food, which, apart from being high in salt and fats, contains artificial colourings, milk fats and some thickening agents. Stick to normal cheese (and only in small quantities).

The ‘happy’ heart attacks HEARTS can be “broken” by happy events as well as those causing grief, according to a major study led

by Switzerland’s University Hospital Zurich.

“Broken-heart syndrome”, a condition thought to affect 6,000 people in Britain each year, occurs when extreme, emotional stress causes the heart to shut down.

Most of these cases are caused by sudden emotional shocks, often involving a bereavement or a relationship breakdown.

But a major research project, spanning nine countries, has found

that joyful events can also lead to heart failure.

Officially known as Takotsubo syndrome, it occurs when the heart is overwhelmed by a “storm” of adrenaline.

These events were often misdiagnosed in the past as heart attacks.

But doctors identified Takotsubo in 1990 when they realised that some patients did not have a blockage of the major arteries, which are the cause of heart attacks.

It was quickly labelled “broken-heart syndrome”, but the study authors suggest that, in a small number of patients, a better description would be “happyheart syndrome”.

The Swiss study, published in the European

Heart Journal, was based on 1,750 patients, spread across nine countries.

Of 485 patients, for whom a definite emotional trigger could be identified, 96% had suffered sad, stressful events, such as the loss of a loved one or attending a funeral.

But of the remaining 20 individuals, heart damage appeared to have been triggered by happy occasions, including a birthday party, a wedding, a surprise celebration, the birth of a grandchild, or even a rugby team’s win.

Lead author Dr Jelena Ghadri said: “Clinicians should be aware of this, and they should also consider patients who arrive in the emergency department with signs

of heart attacks, such as chest pain and breathlessness.

“But if this occurs after a happy event or emotion, it could be because they are suffering from Takotsubo, just as much as a person arriving with a similar condition after a negative, emotional event.

Takotsubo syndrome takes its name from a

Japanese octopus trap, resembling the distorted shape of the left ventricle of a heart affected by the condition.

About 5% of British patients die after suffering from the syndrome; another 10% have recurring attacks within five years, and 15% have ongoing health issues, including chest pains and breathlessness.

For the remaining 75%, the attack is a one-off, and they suffer no longterm effects.

Dr Alexander Lyon, BHF senior lecturer at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital, and a world-leading expert on Takotsubo, said: “This problem occurs when adrenaline rushes to really high levels in the blood stream.

“Adrenaline is a stimulant, but, at high levels, it is toxic to the heart.

When adrenaline goes to these really high levels, the heart shuts down to protect itself - but in some cases it slams on the brakes too hard.”

He added: “Most cases we see are caused by negative emotions - but we have seen some cases which are caused by happy events as well.”

Ton of fun for Cubs THE 1st Tenerife Scout Group have commemorated the centenary of the Cub section, founded by Lord Baden Powell in 1916.

The youngsters celebrated with a “Thank You” party and a cake (above), made especially for the occasion.

In fact, it was a joint party because they also celebrated Founder’s Day, in honour of Baden Powell’s birthday, with an evening of games and fun at their Costa del Silencio headquarters. And they all renewed their promises.

Scoutmaster Steve Leisel said: “We had two visitors over from

the UK, one of them being a Beaver Assistant District Commissioner, who kindly donated badges for our Cubs to wear on their uniforms.

“We also intend to walk in the Los Cristianos Carnival parade next

Sunday (13th March).

Also this year, the Beavers section is celebrating its 30th year in existence.”

The Tenerife Scout group, incorporating Cubs and Beavers, continues to grow since its

2014 inception. But adult help is still needed to assist in the activities.

Steve added: “We owe a lot to our parents and leaders for their continued support because, without them, we could not continue.”

Paws for thought!

MANY of our followers might be surprised by this week’s photograph, which is a departure from our usual pictures of dogs looking for new homes.

This one is particularly special because children from Granadilla Colegio were set a task by their teacher, following an educational visit to the refuge.

They were asked to draw and write what they had learned about caring for dogs and their needs at the refuge.

The picture depicts that all dogs need clean water, food, exercise, regular injections, plus flea and worm control. Additionally,

they must not be maltreated but given love and affection, and kept in a clean environment.

We are so happy that the children are learning through our Educational Programme and, hopefully, in years to come, animal abuse and cruelty here will be reduced vastly.

Who’s for walkies?

After the huge success of our last event, for which we asked people to give the dogs a day of fun, we are organising a walk down to the sea with our inmates next Sunday (13th March) between 1-5pm.

Please call or email the refuge to register for the walk, and request a

small, medium or large dog.

The dogs really enjoy themselves, strolling around the beautiful, natural landscape by the refuge.

Grateful thanks We really are thankful for all the support we receive from so many volunteers and supporters of all nationalities.

ways … from dog-walking, donations of bedding, sheets and towels, adoptions and even flying to Germany with the dogs on their way to new homes.

ARONA School of Music & Dance origins date back to 1985 with the formation of a music academy, offering classes in music theory, piano, wind instruments and percussion.

In 1998 the School, as it now stands, was formed and has since progressed tremendously. It now includes a youth band, Pulso y Púa timple group, clarinets and saxophone group, strings orchestra and the ladies’ choir, among others.

There are also singing classes for individual students, plus ballet and Canarian dance classes.

The choir, which includes members from England, Germany, Italy, Russia and Brazil, as well as Canarian and Spanish ladies, was formed in 1996.

Current director Candelaria González, a professional soprano who has performed worldwide, has been leading the choir since 2002.

They sing in various languages and are always happy to welcome new members. If you’re interested, come along to the Cultural Centre in Los Cristianos on Monday or Wednesday evenings at 8.30pm.

No need to wash dishes SAN Miguel Lions Club’s fund-raising “60s’ Do” attracted a full housed at the Coral Bar in Coral Mar Square, Costa del Silencio.

Special prizes were won on the “Come On Up” ticket draw, including big money and a dishwasher.

Michaels and Cara, who wooed everyone by performing her single, which could become a YouTube favourite.

Quiz winners received a trophy and a bottle of wine. And the huge buffet, supplied by Colin and staff, was enjoyed by everyone … including Gordon!

All in all, a super afternoon, which raised a total of over 300 euros.

Gaffers’ double dream ends

THERE were a couple of major upsets in Tenerife Pool Tables’ Cup and Plate, which occupied centre stage this week.

In the TPT Cup semifinals, the tie of the night was between Gaffers A and Tenerife Hammers A, at Picasso’s Pool Bar. Gaffers A are well on their way to be crowned Division One champions and they would have loved to complete a League and Cup double.

But standing in their way were old adversaries Hammers A, who fought to the bitter end for a place in the final.

Gaffers took the first two frames, only for Hammers to hit straight back, levelling the scores at 2-2. Gaffers again went ahead, but it was soon 3-3.

There was a little breakthrough for Gaffers, who won the next two frames to lead 5-3 after the first two sessions. Hammers needed to get back into this game and struck early in the final session. But rather than gaining momentum, they lost the next and Gaffers needed one

However, nerves kicked in and Hammers took full advantage to win those remaining frames to force a play-off.

It was Gaffers’ Neil against Hammers’ Paul - a real heavyweight clash in a tense atmosphere, and it showed!

Both players missed shots they would normally have made. Neil was favourite for most of the frame.

But Paul, when given a chance, rolled in the black to complete an excellent Hammers’ fightback and an excellent victory, considering they were without Wes, who had Man Flu. Meanwhile, in Valle San Lorenzo at The Crown, the second semi-final was being staged between The Phoenix and Palms B. This was also a close match and was testament to just how strong the teams are in the league. The frames were close and nervy as nobody wanted to make a mistake.

Like the other semi, it looked as though this battle was also heading for a decider.

But Palms B made a breakthrough to ease ahead. And, once in

It’s a worthy prize for Palms B, who have done well this season, and they will fancy their Final chances against Tenerife Hammers A, who were once led by Palms skipper Jet. The Plate quarter-finals saw Gaffers B tackle Terrace Roosters in a clash between Division One teams.

Gaffers have enjoyed a fine first season in the top division, while their opponents have struggled. A good win last week for the away team gave them new confidence.

But they failed to sustain it and Gaffers took early frames as Roosters were still trying to find their feet.

Unfortunately, the home side had too

much of a head start, and it wasn’t long before Gaffers B took their seventh frame to wrap up the tie.

Elsewhere, there were two ties featuring Division Two sides tackling Division One opponents, and the latter stunned their top-flight opponents!

It all started with Rewind Rewired against Bluebell A. The home side came into Division Two late, after defecting from the dark side.

And they have shown what good players they are by shooting up the league, while Bluebell A have experienced a difficult start to life in the top division.

The Division Two team made a much better start as they put early frames on the board.

The visitors hit back,

but quickly realised they were up against a strong outfit.

Rewind’s Victor had an opening-frame break clearance … and they never looked back.

Only Al and Mucker took frames for a wellbeaten Bluebell.

In the other quarterfinal, in Los Abrigos, Phoenix Potters hosted Picasso’s A in what promised to be another good match. And so it proved.

Both teams played solid pool to leave it nicely poised at 4-4.

The Potters have many years of experience behind them and, given that, would have been favourites.

But Picasso’s showed a maturity across the final frames and, after one or two close calls, just managed to get over the line and into the semis.

There were also a couple of Direct Telecom League fixtures played this week. In Division One, Palms A were trying to finish the season strongly to put a dent in the runners-up ambitions of Dreamers A. And they flew out of the traps.

They were soon 4-1 up and eyeing a third straight win.

But Dreamers are in the top end for a reason and soon found their groove.

A few slack frames from Palms were punished, and Dreamers came home comfortable 8-4 winners to go second in the table.

In Division Two, Splash Bar met Tenerife Pool Tables. The home side were looking to halt a run of poor form and TPT strived to continue their good form.

Splash Bar made a good start, with Darren, John and then Craig winning frames to put them 3-1 up.

Young Harley struck first for TPT in the second session, but Darren and Craig took their second frames of the night, and Andy chipped in a frame for Splash Bar to lead 6-2 going into the last four.

With the home side needing just one frame, Colin got one back for TPT. But the comeback was short-lived as Craig made it three frames from three to claim the points for Splash Bar. It put them just six points off top spot, but the three teams above them all have games in hand, so promotion may have to wait another season.

On Wednesday, Picasso’s completed an excellent week with a tight 7-5 win over Sabores.

With a really small margin in the handicaps in both matches,

plenty of drama is guaranteed, especially if some of the darters who were at the EZE group exhibition last week absorbed a few tips! If you’re at a loose end, why not go along and give the players your support. I know they would appreciate it.

Super Cristo Reyes!

THERE was an upset in the third annual EZE Group Cup at Showtime last weekend.

This year’s darts extravaganza was expanded to four of the world’s best players. But the spoils went to the local hero.

On the world rankings, Cristo Reyes would have been a rank outsider to lift the trophy, but he was solid all night and wowed the capacity crowd.

He found a bit of form after starting slowly against World No.5 James Wade, and 0-3

became 1-3, then 2-3 as the crowd chanted “Cristo Reyes … he’s one of our own!”

This inspired a 109 checkout from him to make it 3-3 and, with the darts in the deciding leg, Cristo roared home 4-3.

James said: “Fair play to him. I had him cold at the start and I let him in a bit. That’s darts.”

In the second semifinal, there was another stirring comeback.

World No.7 Robert Thornton, making his first trip to Tenerife, took the early legs against Simon Whitlock. Thornton’s finishing was excellent, and at 3-1 he looked the likely winner.

But Whitlock’s new glasses were having a

positive affect and he started hitting the 180s.

Finishing well, he forced a decider, of which he was always in control.

He hit double 10 to seal the match and punched the sky.

Thornton wasn’t too downbeat, saying: “I played all right. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my trip here, so roll on next year!”

The final was a bestof-nine-legs affair and the standard went up a notch. Cristo, a heavy scorer, was pummelling the treble - but so was Whitlock.

The pair shared six 180s, but Cristo displayed better finishing, and he again checked out on 109 to stay in front.

rything but, with the crowd screaming him home, Cristo nailed the vital double to take the trophy.

“I can’t take anything away from him” said

Simon. “He finished well and the crowd loved it! If he can get his double like that when it matters in the big tournaments, he is going to get better and better.”

Cristo wore a large smile all night, rewarding his loyal fans who had travelled down from the North of the island.

Still clutching his EZE Group Cup, Cristo said: “It’s amazing! To beat both Wade and Whitlock! Thank you to everyone who supported me.”

The last week has seen some shock results ... and an old giant launching a comeback!

What will we have in store this weekend?

Tottenham v Arsenal This is a match all Spurs and Arsenal fans look forward to, and it has even more spice now because the teams, both in the title race, lost in midweek. Spurs have looked a little tired in the last couple of games, but the players will be pumped up and eager to please fans.

The team attack with pace, which will cause problems for their opponents’ defence.

Arsenal have lost the plot. This has been their title to lose for a while, and it looks as though they will do just that.

Their attacking players need to sort themselves out because they’ve been pants for ages. It’s win or bust for the Gunners.

Prediction: Draw Last season: 2 -1 Newcastle v Bournemouth Newcastle are still in the bottom three, though they have a game in hand over their rivals.

That means nothing if you don’t win it - and with their form, it seems

unlikely. With the money spent and the players they bought in I expected the Magpies to be at least mid-table, but they have underperformed consistently.

Bournemouth had a superb win in their midweek local derby against Southampton, which took them eight points clear of the relegation zone. And with worse teams below them, they should stay up. Another victory for them here and their odds of survival will be even better.

Man City v Aston Villa Man City have won the first trophy of the season with the League Cup, but fans were fuming after their league loss at Liverpool. They simply must win every match now if they are to have any chance of lifting the Premier League crown Aston Villa are gone.

Their fans have been planning for life in the Championship for a while and now, it seems, the players are as well.

Remi Garde might as well play the Under-21s … they are a better side anyway!

Last season: 3-2 Prediction: Home win Watford v Leicester

The Hornets are having an excellent first season back in the Premier League. But they are showing signs of starting to feel the pace. They bossed the match with Man United but couldn’t see the job through, and they face a Leicester side still top of the pile.

Leicester must have been disappointed to have dropped points against West Brom in mid week, but the Baggies are on a good run and it was a fine point, all things considered.

Prediction: Draw Last season: N/A Crystal Palace v Liverpool Palace have been somewhat of a bogey team for Liverpool in recent seasons, and they will want more of the same to reignite their season after slipping into the bottom half of the table.

Liverpool dusted themselves down after the League Cup final defeat at Wembley and must now concentrate on finishing as high up the table as possible.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 3-1 West Brom v Man Utd The Baggies are on a roll, and the confidence is back in the side.

Manager Tony Pulis has got his side scoring for fun at the moment, and they’re a handful for anyone when their tails are up.

Man Utd are also on a run. They have given their supporters a real voice and, like WBA, they are brimming with confidence. This could be a goalfest!

Plowman’s midweek harvest WE have had two pointscoring windows in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League following the weekend fixtures, plus the 10 in midweek.

But with the League’s bigger players and teams having poor results, neither window saw large point-scoring.

West Ham and Arsenal contributed the most players to the pointscoring team of the window. And in midweek, Liverpool contributed

three players after their comprehensive win against Man City. The rest of the team came from Man Utd, Bournemouth, Everton, Stoke, Swansea, Leicester, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

After the weekend matches, there was little movement in the Oasis Fm League’s top five. Frank Devaney still led the way, with Trevor Passingham moving into second, Jamie Palmer up to third and Lee Wilson

dropping to fourth. Neil Lobban stayed where he was, in fifth spot.

But with the midweek fixtures, it all changed.

The top four are as they were, but Paul Plowman’s Just 4 Fun team, had a good week, leapfrogging Neil into fifth spot.

Over the weekend, the team of the week honours were shared between Eamo Farrell and Tony Morgan, who each amassed 58 points, with a little help from Arnau-

tovic, Ozil and Vardy.

The midweek honours went to Anthony Cracknell’s FC Twenty, with 62 points. His star performers were Firmino, Mata and Sanchez, with 33 points between them.

With games now coming thick and fast, keep an eye on your squads for injuries and suspensions .
