Thousands turn out for Arona spectacle Continued from front The streets of Las Americas and Los Cristianos came alive as thousands of people lined the streets trying to get a glimpse of the opening gala. There was a real streetparty atmosphere as more than 500 people took part in the parade. Local police said that over 15,000 people watched and partied as the “International Carnival of Los Cristianos” started with a bang. The event was followed by the presentation of the Carnival Queen and Carnival Princess candidates. And, like every year, the party began in Las Americas before snaking into Los Cristianos. There were 30 major dance troupes, street musicians, and ensemble groups in an afternoon noted as the best for many a year. Arona Mayor Jose Julian Mena said: “We have a very unique Parade and it is thrilling to see so many tourists filling the town. “The importance of the Carnival cannot be under-stated. This is the South Carnival - a fusion between attraction, work and fun by the people and for the people. We have 10 days of events and a lot of fun planned!” The parade also included a special appearance by Las Palmas Carnival’s Gala Drag Queen, who walked the route with some of the most outlandish dance troupes. For the first time, the Orobal association of parents of people with

physical and mental disabilities took part to help raise awareness of universal inclusion and accessibility. After the parade, attention turned to the first evening event and something a little different. Papagayo Beach Club hosted the firstever Wig party. It was exactly how it sounds! Hundreds of party-goers wore their best or most outrageous wig! And there was a serious element because 2,000 euros was up for grabs, with a variety of wig-based awards. The judges had a hard task in finding the best original wig. But in the end, the title was awarded to Richard Castro for his fantasy “La Vida Es Un Carnaval” in the individual category. Richard Castro scooped 500 euros and a specially-designed trophy for coming first. Irene Avero Candelaria Perez, with Remembrance of Cuba (300 euros), was second, while the 200-euro third prize went to Esteban Antonio Fumero Garcia’s fantasy creation Habanísimo. In the groups’ contest,

the team called Hawaii won, wearing a design by Sara Bethancourt Morales. They shared a cool 1,000 euros! A couple of nights later, the traditional Murgas competition took place in front of a capacity crowd of more than 1,500. There was plenty of humour, and competition was fierce as the six groups did battle. It pitched some of the North’s Carnival winners in with some southern acts, and the Mamelukes, from Santa Cruz, took the spoils. On Wednesday night Nayara Plasencia González was crowned the Carnival Princess. She overcame five other girls under the age of eight in the final. The judges said it was almost impossible to

pick a winner. These events simply whetted the whistle for the next few days. Last night (Thursday), saw the crowning of the main Carnival Queen, while the Drag Queen will be elected tonight. This leads into a full three days of activities. The Mayor said: “The first weekend of the International Carnival of Los Cristianos was a complete success, with lots of participation and attendance. “This weekend, we have some of the most important events of the festival, such as the gala election of queens, and, of course, the Carnival Day, which is a holiday the whole family can enjoy.” Tomorrow (Saturday) is for partying all day long, it seems. From noon, there will be two stages set up and, for many, the 40 Principales stage will be a Carnival highlight. There will be more than 20 acts performing in what is another Carnival favourite. This special concert, which runs until 8pm, is dedicated to the best in-

ternational Latin music. The afternoon is dedicated to Old Havana, with Henry Mendez topping the bill. Jose de Rico, Amelie, Jorge Sanchez, DCS and Rasel are among the supporting bill. On Sunday, the streets will be filled with the Classic Car exhibition. This begins at 11am and, with perfect weather forecast, it will be a car enthusiast’s dream. Later in the afternoon, from 4pm, there is an-

other parade. It is bigger than the opening parade and will be guided through the streets of Los Cristianos. Then, on Monday, comes the grand finale with the Burial of the Sardine. This time-honoured tradition has to be seen to be believed! There really is something for everyone at this Carnival - and don’t forget, the fairground rides will still be in town for a week or so after the official celebrations end!

And you think we’re short of police here! THE police shortage here in the South has been well-documented recently, but the problem is even worse in La Palma.

A shocking new report shows that most of the island’s municipalities have no local police on duty on Sundays and night shifts during the week. Some municipalities do not even have agents to patrol the streets during daytime hours. The most unusual situation exists in Fuencaliente, where the South of the Island has had no police for over a year. Its single officer was, at least in principle, on sick leave, and his shifts have never been covered. Nor does it appear that the city is in a great hurry to fill the vacancy. Meanwhile, Puntagorda has only one copper, who doesn’t work on Sundays and Thursdays unless there is an extraordinary event. The schedule depends on the day of the week. Monday, for example, he works up to 6.30pm,

while on Tuesday and Wednesday he is on duty in the morning only. And when he goes on vacation … well, you can work it out! In Villa de Garafía there are two policemen, although earlier this week it was confirmed by a Cabildo minister that “the two policemen are on sick leave; and for now we have no one doing their service”. In nearby Barlovento, the police do not work Sundays “unless there are fiestas, funerals or extraordinary events”, confirmed a police spokesperson. The two agents do not work night shifts. Throughout La Palma, in fact, it is very difficult to find a town with enough police. In Puntallana, there are two policemen. Monday through Friday who do 24-hour shifts: a full day each! In Villa de Mazo, San Andrés and Tijarafe they do not have any police on Sundays and evenings, and the same goes for Brena Baja, despite this boasting one of the two most important tourist areas on the island.

Spain so polluted POLLUTION levels in Spain topped all other European countries last year, according to a study by the Observatory of Sustainability. The 4% overall increase in CO2 emissions there was blamed on a 23% rise in electricity used. And emissions from vehicles also

grew by 3.4% in 2015. Chief investigator José Santamarta has criticised the European CO2 trading market, which is designed to cut carbon emissions. He believes that current prices of CO2 emitted per tonne are too low to be prohibitive.

Canary women can’t find work THE Canaries has a total of 49.7% long-term, unemployed women, which is more than anywhere on mainland Spain. It tops Valencia’s 46.7%, according to an Adecco report, released to coincide with “International Women’s Day.” Some 155,400 Canarian women are unemployed, of whom 77,300 have been jobless for over two years. The older they are, the lower the rate of unemployment, and vice-

versa. Between 16-19, 74.2% are without jobs, exceeding the 70.7% national rate. As the level of education increases, unemployment falls. Canarian women with just a primary education suffer a jobless rate of 36%. The rate stands at 23.1% for those with a university - or higher education. Overall, in the Canary Islands, 88.3% of women are employed, and 38,700 women are business owners.

LA roadworks nearly finished THE project was meant to have been completed by the start of Christmas, but it looks as though everything should finally be finished before Easter. That’s the news on

the road improvements along the so-called Golden Mile in Las Americas. This week, Cabildo President Carlos Alonso inspected the work along avenida de Las Americas, and he was pleased with what he saw, saying: “The remodelling will generate more economic activity throughout the area.” Alonso was joined by

the Canarian Government’s Palmero Angeles, General Trade and Consumer Affairs Director, along with Cabildo Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe and Arona Mayor José Julián Mena. The improvement work, which stayed within the 4.4m-euro budget, was financed with contributions from the Canary Is-

lands, Tenerife Cabildo, Arona Council and local businesses. Bernabe stressed the importance of the renovation, saying it was necessary to increase the tourist destination’s quality. He added: “It serves as an incentive to promote and improve the private sector in what is an important tourist area.”

Centre opens to treat anorexia and bulimia ALABENTE, the Tenerife association which helps those with anorexia and bulimia, has started an Adeje-based public service offering specialised treatments for eating disorders.

The centre, available on Tuesdays from 8am3pm, is based in Adeje’s Department of Health, beside the town’s main post office, on c/Tinerfe el Grande, 32. A professional, qualified team - a psychologist and a dietician make up the advisors, and people interested can call 922 756 257. The team will help make assessments and decide on care needed for affected individuals and families. “It is difficult to estimate the numbers with eating disorders, said

Adeje Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo. “In general, most studies show a growth in the number of cases in developed countries.” In Spain, statistics show that between 4-5% of the adolescent population will suffer from some form of disorder. Anorexia counts for 0.3%, bulimia for 0.8%, while nonspecific eating disorders affect 3.1% of the female population be-

tween the ages of 12 and 21. Councillor Bencomo said: “The size of the problem is evident - it affects at least one in every 10 adolescent girls. But of the adolescent population, just 5-10% of those affected are boys.” Bencomo and Local Development Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martin held their first meeting with the Alabente group last November to ascertain the

needs of affected persons in Adeje, and how to establish a support structure in South Tenerife. Alabente has been working since 1995 with those suffering eating disorders as well as their families, with information, workshops, individual and group sessions, home visits, etc. Its aim is to improve the quality of life and aid recovery for those affected.

Loro Parque’s scheme to open students’ eyes FROM now until April, Loro Parque Fundación will continue to provide awareness -rais ing sessions in various elementary and high school centres in the Canary Islands.

An agreement with the Canarian Government’s Ministry of Education and the Islands’ universities, which began last month, is part of an “Experts in Animal Welfare” programme. It is a Loro Parque Fundación project to raise awareness among youngsters about the preservation of oceans and, especially, about the risks threatening their integrity and sustainability. The project aims at triggering their enthusiasm for marine environment and animal species. Ms Soledad Monzón, Canarian Councillor for Education, emphasised the “particular relevance” of the sea in our autonomous community, saying: “In the Canary Islands, more than in other communities, it’s essential to raise awareness among young people about the ocean’s

key role in climate, temperature moderation and many other aspects.” These awarenessraising sessions, organised by Loro Parque Fundación’s Education Department and lasting one week at each of the 16 participating centres, are supported by diverse exhibition and graphic materials. They will also be integrated with the students’ academic syllabus. Canarian students will learn about marine pollution, over-fishing and threatened species. This knowledge

will be strengthened by them taking marine samples and using the IT apps. Loro Parque will also distribute 3,000 tickets among centres which belong to REDCICE (Canarian Network of Innovating Centres for Schooling Continuity), which is an organisation whose goal is to prevent students cutting short their schooling early. Diverse elementary and high-school centres from Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are participating in these sessions, while many other

Extra road freedom for city electric cars IN a new move to help ease congestion in city centres, electric vehicles are now allowed to use bus-taxi lanes in the Santa Cruz municipality.

The Capital’s Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, announcing the scheme, said: “This measure is already carried out in some Spanish and European cities, and we consider

this will boost the electric vehicles’ appeal and encourage the use of this type of car.” Zaida Gonzalez, first Deputy Mayor and Public Safety and Mobility Councillor, said the measure was a boost to improve the environmental quality of the town, and entice drivers to use electric vehicles. Coupled with the installation of recharging points for these vehicles in the city, Mayor Bermudez says it puts Santa Cruz on a par

with other Spanish and European municipalities which already have similar regulations. And from now on, says the Council, those using this type of clean transport, which hits the European programme for zero emissions, can drive within the bus-taxi routes. That said, the electric vehicles are not allowed to make stops in these lanes, except to comply with traffic rules, or ordered to by a copper.

Canarian educational institutions are expected to join the activities, both in marine conservation and in other areas associated with animal welfare.

This initiative enables Loro Parque Fundación to reinforce its commitment to raising awareness in the Canarian community about the need to get informed, protect and conserve the environ-

ment and animal species. The task has been undertaken by this non-profit international foundation in environmental education, research and biodiversity conservation since 1994.

Tenerife’s trading bond with Africa strengthens

Arona Mayor’s quest to improve the roads THE problems on the roads here in the South are getting beyond a joke. The daily congestion is something of which the local authorities are aware. But being aware and making changes are two separate things.

Recently, Arona Mayor José Julián Mena told Canarian Weekly of his plans to get the TF-1 motorway up to three lanes in both directions. And this week, Arona Council clarified its

plans for the TF-66: it wants the road put on the Insular Road Plan. The TF-66, a key trunk road linking the Guaza crossing with Buzanada, Valle San Lorenzo, Cabo Blanco and La Camella, supports hightraffic intensity. The Arona Mayor, along with Works and Infrastructure Councillor José Luis Gómez and Urban Studies and Planning Councillor Luis Garcia, have held several meetings with Miguel Becerra and Ofelia Manjon, the Cabildo’s Highways and Landscape Ministers respectively, to work together on the needs of the municipality roads. Mena insists the TF-66

needs improving, and he believes the best way forward is to include it on the Insular Plan. “We are talking about an intervention that should be a priority, because the road is in a deplorable state and supports a high intensity of traffic,” he said. “It links the motorway with the nuclei of areas and accounts for almost 40% of the traffic in the municipality. It’s also the only link with the waste plant for the region.” Mena added: “The Cabildo should consider this as an urgent matter since the road deterioration is high, and has so much traffic. This cannot wait until 2017.

It must be a priority to avoid jeopardising the safety of drivers.” The monthly meetings have also been an opportunity to discuss projects to improve other Arona roads, some of which have already been approved by the Cabildo. These include the stretch between El Fraile and Palm-Mar, resurfacing work on the TF-66 and a new roundabout constructed at the entrance to the Echeyde school, which should free traffic in the area. A technical report was also submitted by Arona this week concerning the Chayofa roundabout, which also needs a few tweaks.

ROUTES Africa, the only route-development forum for the African region, will this summer be hosted by Tenerife Tourism Corporation, supported by the Canary Islands Government. The forum, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, has been bringing together leading airlines, airports and tourism authorities to discuss air services to, from and within Africa since 2006. And some 250 routedevelopment professionals are expected to attend the 11th annual forum, which takes place between 26th28th June. Historical trade links to Africa were strengthened by the creation of a common, economic-development area between the Canary Islands and neighbouring African countries. The project, supported by the European Union, has inspired trade agreements with Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Cape Verde. More than 200 Canarian companies now operate in Africa, exporting goods worth 224 million euros to the continent between January and November last year. Tenerife’s long-term aim is to become a logistical stepping-stone to Africa, connecting the continent to Europe and the Americas through the expansion of its air route network. And Routes Africa plays an important role in Tenerife’s trading activities to achieve this target. The event will showcase our year-round

sunshine and stunning beaches, mountains and national park, which all combine to attract six million tourists to Tenerife every year, making it one of Spain’s top destinations. Routes Africa will also highlight the Island’s potential for investment as a hub for passengers, goods and data, thanks to its special, fiscal advantages. Routes Director Katie Bland said: “West Africa is an important trading partner for Tenerife because of its geographical position, and there is huge potential to develop more air-service to the African continent. “Hosting Routes Africa will support Tenerife’s strategy to become an aviation hub connecting West Africa to Europe and North America.” She added: “The Tenerife Tourism team are hugely proactive in airservice development, and a key partner of Routes. “We look forward to working with them even more closely towards Routes Africa 2016, and to uniting the route-development community from across the African continent and beyond in a stunning destination.” Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said: “We are delighted and very honoured that Tenerife is hosting this prestigious event. “Routes Africa is an exciting opportunity for us to showcase our Island to key aviation industry leaders from across the world, as a business hub for Africa - and a gateway to four continents.”

Tenerife’s costly coastal upgrade

CABILDO President Carlos Alonso and Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe have announced the second phase of Tenerife’s Sea improvement programme, with an impressive 65 million-euro budget, invested over 10 years. This budget is supplied jointly by the Cabildo and the Canarian Government, and covers 140 different works, which will enhance the

coastal values to improve tourism and afford better accessibility to the sea. Bernabe said the money would not be spent on major infrastructure, adding: “This is aimed at the small and medium-size coast and facilities, giving access to the sea via stairs, trails or other elements.” The Canarian Government says the cash will spread evenly between the three responsible ad-

ministrations: Cabildo, municipalities and autonomous government. Alonso, who hopes negotiations with the Island’s 28 coastal municipalities occur before the end of June, highlighted the investments they have made. Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Bernabe described the complexity of Tenerife’s coastline, saying: “We have an Island with only 4% sand and 96% of cliff or rocky

areas. This means that 30% of the sea hits us in a dangerous area. “So we are always looking at how to make areas safer without tourists losing the natural feel.” The previous coastal upgrade, carried out between 1992 and 2007, concentrated on 36 projects, costing a 20meuro total, and in places like Las Eras (Fasnia), Charco del Viento (La Guancha) and in the low-tide areas.

What a week WE all have dates in the calendar to which we look forward. And for me, the next seven days make up one of the best weeks of the year.

It’s Carnival weekend in the South, Tuesday is the start of the Cheltenham Festival and, to put a large cherry on top of a massive cake, Thursday is Paddy’s Day! There has been a real buzz around Arona Carnival this year. Obviously, in these belttightening days, we are never going to have the outrageous carnivals we enjoyed in the Eighties and Nineties. They really were something. The fair was three times bigger, and the celebrations went on for weeks. However, this year’s event has been a stride in the right direction. The events so far have been really well-attended, and last weekend’s parade was something to enjoy. The new Arona Mayor has certainly given the area a bit of a buzz. Thursday will see our area turn green as the Irish, literally, have their day in the sun. The expat community can be proud of many things,

and the way Paddy’s Day has become part of the calendar is astonishing. It first took off here in the early Nineties through the efforts of FAILTE members, and the hard work they did then has borne an orchard of fruit since. I simply cannot imagine Tenerife without this event. Thousands of people come here, specifically to celebrate it. I’d wager it attracts far more holiday-makers than the Santa Cruz Carnival. And all of this happens just after one of the great sporting events. I adore the Cheltenham Festival. The rain of the last few weeks should ensure the ground is soft and this, hopefully, will eliminate any fatalities. Just like the Grand National, the Festival brings out all the dogooders who bleat about animal welfare. Everyone connected with this great sport cares very deeply about the racehorses, and many treat them like their children. But nothing in life is 100% safe. More people die on the golf course every day than on a race track every year. And there are no calls for that sport to be banned!

Your Emails Dear Editor, I have lived on Tenerife for six years and thought I was quite knowledgeable about the way things worked there. It turns out that I know very little - and certainly nothing about the way the electricity system and suppliers work. My friend and I recently purchased a property which required quite a bit of work doing to it. All was going well until the house was rewired by a Spanish company. We expected to have no problems - after all, it was a simple rewiring job. We paid 6,000 euros for the job and the electricians started work. Most people know that when a house is bought, it comes with a bulletin which includes a layout of the electrical wiring. The electrician refused to give us a new bulletin as the consumer unit (which was 2km away) now has to be placed inside the property. There were also other problems: the lights dip and the power is not sufficient to work the microwave. And every time the pool heater is turned on, it trips the fuse. The electricians had placed a 25-amp fuse in the consumer unit, which seems very low as my house in the UK has a 30-amp one, yet the property is a quarter of the size of this Tenerife one. We are plunged into darkness, but at least we know now to have a torch at hand all the time. We visited Endesa on 29th November and met a nice young man, who spoke excellent English. He said an inspector would visit the property. But despite a number of subsequent visits to Endesa, the inspector still hasn’t called. We looked on the Endesa web site (also in English) and noted that they have an ombudsman to deal with unsatisfied clients. We are not just unsatisfied but frustrated, angry and at a loss as to what to do next. I would like to get in touch with anybody who has had a similar experience with Endesa so that we can put pressure on them to deliver a decent service. Marilyn Burtenshaw. Bomberos boosted by new firefighters

FOUR new firefighters have joined Adeje Bomberos after overcoming the eightmonth period of training, instruction and final exams! Adeje’s Volunteer Fire Department has inaugurated its new members, who this week began their first shifts. Adeje Park, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary, is associated with the Insular Tenerife Fire Consortium, covering part of South Tenerife 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

It has 38 firefighters currently, trained, accredited and equipped to provide the answers to nearly 500 call-outs in 2015. The new firefighters were trained in the field of fire-fighting, covering traffic accidents, engine management and power tools. They also worked with breathing apparatus and firefighting techniques, both in confined spaces and outdoors, among other concerns.

Canaries still top in divorce stakes THE Canary Islands remains the divorce capital of Spain, yet the number of demands for marital dissolution, divorce and separation, actually fell by 2.6% in 2015 compared with 2014.

Dear Editor, As a regular visitor to your Island, I have been impressed with the improvements made to pedestrian areas, and the cleanliness of the streets, beaches and other public areas. But I cannot understand, though, why excursion-providers are allowed to lay out pamphlets wherever they like (including the beaches). These pamphlets tend to be blown all over the place - beaches, private properties, streets and cliffs, etc. The north side of Puerto Colon, looking down from the sea barrier has been awful this year. Though not wishing to harm them in any way, surely these companies could provide stands for their advertising. AP Fry, Harrogate, North Yorkshire

But the number of annulments for invalidity rose 6.9% according to the latest data from the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). Last year’s divorces here totalled 123,330

and, of these, 73,389 were by mutual agreement, and 49,941 were contentious. This gives marriage dissolutions a rate of 3.3 per 1,000 inhabitants the highest in Spain. We are followed by Cata-

luña and Valencia at 3.1. followed by Andalucia, Asturias and the Balearic Islands. The national average rate in 2015 stood at 2.8 marriage dissolution demands per 1,000 inhabitants.

Get your walking boots on THE Island is again hosting one of the most important hiking events in Europe, which will attract more than 100 participants from across the continent.

Santa Cruz opens on a Sunday, once a month SANTA Cruz is finally moving into the 21st Century … well, sort of! The first Sunday of the month, with immediate effect, will see a commercial revitalisation of the Island’s capital.

Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, who has finally allowed all-day trading after the success of a few pilot schemes,

said: “The point is that everyone can identify the first Sunday of the month to come to Santa Cruz because trade and shops will now be open. This is a natural progression after trialling it.” Economic Planning Councillor Alfonso Cabello said that last Sunday’s first official opening was a success, attracting many members of the public to Santa Cruz. Bermudez added: “The rate of opening of the shops was 75%,

and our 2016 goal is to increase that rate and make more profitable activity for everyone.” The Mayor said the capital has had 30 months of uninterrupted positive growth and that events like this would boost this growth. “We have to claim that we are a capital, with the largest business concentration in Tenerife, and we are already a tourist town. It’s all we need to transform into more and better jobs. It’s a move forward.”

Cabello drew attention to the number of cruise passengers last year visiting the city on Sunday - more than 60,000 in March alone - who complained that they had nowhere to visit or to shop. Bermudez acknowledged that, saying “We have to take advantage of this because it is shown that more supply over demand ultimately translates into additional revenue for businesses and this, in turn, into more jobs.”

Catholic school’s third sex scandal

A THIRD teacher at a Barcelona school run by a Roman Catholic order has, inadvertently, admitted in a video that he has been abusing students sexually.

The video, released on Monday, has deepened one the biggest paedophile scandals to hit Spain. The man, in his seventies and identified by his AF initials only, can be heard in the video - recorded with a hidden camera - apologising to one of the victims he abused in the Eighties. “I don’t know why I did it … it was like a child’s game,” he says in the video, posted on

the website of Barcelona-based daily newspaper El Periodico de Catalunya, which masked his face. The victim said he was sexually-abused by the former teacher dozens of times between the ages of 8-14. And the allegations were not refuted by the culprit. The abuse took place at a Marist school in the Barcelona neighbourhood of Les Corts, which is already at the centre of a paedophile scandal. It erupted last month after the paper published the confession of a former gym teacher, who said he had abused his students sexually. The teacher spoke to the newspaper before being questioned by a judge, who is investigating complaints of

sexual abuse filed by five families against him. The newspaper article triggered a wave of fresh accusations. There is now a total of 29 complaints against six former teachers from three Marist schools in Barcelona. Three of the former teachers, including the man featured in the video released on Monday, have confessed. Juan Jose Omella, Archbishop of Barcelona, apologised to the victims in an interview published on Sunday in El Periodico de Catalunya. He added that the Marist community - a Roman Catholic teaching order - was unaware of the abuse until now and followed the protocols in place to deal with such cases.

It has caused outrage in Spain, a predominantly Catholic country, where there have been few sexual-abuse scandals involving the Church. The biggest case to date erupted at the end of 2014, when a former altar-boy complained of having been molested as a child by priests in the southern city of Cordoba. The case attracted the attention of Pope Francis, who vowed “zero tolerance” for paedophilia. Ten Catholic priests and two laymen were initially charged over the case, although charges were eventually dropped against all but one of them – only on the grounds that too much time had passed since the alleged crimes took place.

The second annual Tenerife Walking Festival (TWF 2016) will be based in Puerto de la Cruz from 29th March to 2nd April. It will highlight adventure and outdoor activities, and will feature internationally and nationally-renowned speakers, plus a grand finale, displaying the Island’s cuisine and wines. Cabildo Tourism chief Alberto Bernabé said: “The Walking Festival returns with the same strengths and qualities which made it a benchmark last year - notably, the quality and variety of footpaths, the complementary activities and Puerto de la Cruz hosting the event. “In just two editions, the festival has become a reference for ramblers. And we want its promotional philosophy and respect for the environment to be present in other initiatives we plan to implement on the Island during the year.” The Festival offers a chance to hike up to 15 trails, which are a selection of the most striking on Tenerife. If you wish to enrol, you can still register online at www. tenerifewalkingfestival. com The whole Island, and specifically Puerto de la

Cruz, will be focusing on hiking during the weeklong TWF 2016, and local residents are invited to take part in the parallel activities. These include presentations on Wednesday, 30th March, Thursday, 31st, and Friday, 1st April, which take place in the San Felipe Castle at 8.30pm. On Wednesday, 30th March, there will be a talk by José María Nasarre, Head of Nature of the Spanish Mountaineering Federation (FEDME), about safety on the trails. The following day, Juan Jesús Ibáñez, from the International Union of Mountaineering and Climbing (UIAA), will speak about the Respect the Mountain project, which will restore a Tenerife footpath in June. Sebastian Alvaro, legendary adventurer and director of Spain’s TVE programme “Al Filo de lo Imposible”, who is again the Festival’s “godfather”, will offer one of his keynote talks on Friday, 1st April. He will combine his life story with spectacular photographs and videos of his expeditions. You are also welcome to join in the grand closing party on Saturday, 2nd April, in the Plaza de Europa from noon. All these activities will be free of charge and open to all. The TWF 2016 will be a bustling, lively celebration with tapas, local wines, cooking sessions and a fair, featuring a sample of the wide range of outdoor and adventure activities on offer for visitors to the Island.

For richer, for poorer POZUELO, a Madrid dormitory area, has been named Spain’s richest town, while Torrevieja, a run-down resort on the Alicante coast, remains the poorest.

That’s according to the latest municipal “wealth and inequality” survey, published by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The study covers 109 Spanish municipalities throughout Spain, and shows that the 70,298euro, annual household income in Pozuelo some 15km north-west of the capital - is five times that of Torrevieja’s 13,977 euros. Unsurprisingly, Pozuelo is dotted with exclusive, gated communities, the home of highly-paid footballers and other celebrities. But poor old Torrevieja houses many pensioners all year round, many of them from the UK and Germany, and its economy is largely

dependent on the summer season. In general, the north of Madrid is home to the capital’s wealthiest inhabitants: in Majadahonda, the country’s second-wealthiest town, annual household income is around 56,000 euros. Four more of Spain’s 10 richest municipalities are also to be found around the

capital: Alcobendas, Las Rozas, San Sebastián de los Reyes, and the city centre itself. Naturally, the survey reveals a close link between household income and joblessness, a relationship particularly evident in Andalusia, where many of the poorest Spanish municipalities are located: Sanlúcar de Barram-

Spain’s top daily paper heads for small screen EL PAIS, the biggestselling newspaper in Spain, could end its printed edition and become, primarily, an online outlet. That was the headline-making news from Editor-in-Chief Antonio Cano last Friday. And, sadly, it is becoming a global trend among national newspapers, under pressure from the Internet. El Pais, which gained a reputation as the newspaper of democratic Spain after the death of dictator General Franco, has reported a steady decline in readership since the country’s 2008 economic crisis. The possibility of one of the world’s most influential Hispanic newspa-

pers halting the presses follows the recent disappearance of Britain’s Independent from newsstands, to be replaced by an online version. Cano told his El Pais staff in a open letter: “The step from paper to digital is just one part, and is not even the biggest of the many steps newspapers will have to take until we find our true space in the future.” He assured staff that El Pais was committed to publishing a print edition “for as long as possible”. But he also said it would be working to build a digital medium which could respond better to the demands of readers. “We can already assume

that the habit of buying a newspaper at a newsstand is now the thing of minority,” he added. “The majority of people, in particular youngsters, look for their information on a range of different devices, and they consume it in a different way.” Like many other Spanish newspapers El Pais, founded in 1976, ran into debt when advertising revenues plummeted during the economic crisis. Its circulation has fallen steadily, shrinking by 15% last year to around 220,000 copies. But its online business has been growing, with unique online-users rising 15.3% last year to a monthly average of 13.5 million.

eda (42.3% unemployment), La Línea de la Concepción (40.1%), and Jerez (39.4%).

The jobless total in Pozuelo is 9%, and its similarly-wealthy neighbours have com-

parable levels of unemployment. The survey also provides an insight into the gap between rich and poor within Spain’s major cities: data from 2012 puts average annual household income in the capital’s two wealthiest neighbourhoods, El Viso and La Piovera, in the northern area of Madrid, above 100,000 euros. Barcelona’s Pedralbes comes in third at 92,755 euros. The poorest Spanish neighborhood are in the south of Seville: Polígono Sur, Los Pájaros and Amate, where average income is little over 12,000 euros a year. The INE survey is part of the European Union’s Urban Adult project, which measures living conditions in cities throughout the EU.

Mouth-wateringly rich DEHESA Maladúa, which costs an astonishingly 4,100 euros a leg, is the world’s most expensive ham.

And its reputation was sealed after it was recently awarded the charcuterie world’s equivalent of an Oscar. Europe’s leading organic food trade fair “Biofach”, is held each February in Nuremberg, this unique, dry-cured ham, was rated its finest product. Dehesa Maladúa’s founder, 67-year-old Eduardo Donato, produces just 80 hams a year, and says the secret of his success is “patience, passion, and pleasure”. The prize-winning ham comes from a rare breed of pig called the Manchado de Jabugo, which takes its name from the distinctive dark patches on the animals’ coats. Donato helped rescue the breed from extinction 25 years ago, when he moved to the tiny community of Cortega-

na, in south-western Spain’s Huelva province. The Manchado de Jabugo breed has been kept alive over the years by a handful of dedicated farmers like Donato. But unlike him, most of them did not sell their produce. Instead, they focused on other types of pigs bearing the Huelva Denomination of Origin, of which there

are now around 22,500. Manchado de Jabugo ham’s unique taste is created because the pigs eat natural ingredients only. Donato allows them to forage for acorns and almonds, and to root around in the rolling woodlands of Huelva, which is washed by Atlantic rains. The ham’s excellence was already established by Córdoba’s Nutri-

tional Science and Food Technology Department, after it was subjected to a tasting by 10 experts, based on international norms. These measure the intensity of its colour, which is dark and lustrous; its fat, which is white and soft; its aromatic intensity, which is deep, with notes of toasted dried fruit and bread crust; and its overall flavour, which is a balance of sweet and salty. What’s more, Manchado de Jabugo ham not only tastes wonderful, but it’s good for you as well: rich in protein, vitamins B1 and B6 and healthy minerals. High in unsaturated fatty acids, a 100gm portion (which would cost around 50 euros) provides around 185 calories. A Manchado de Jabugo pig takes up to three years to reach maturity, while other varieties can be sold when they are as young as 14 months. It then takes another six years before the ham is fully cured.

To complicate matters further, Manchado de Jabugo pigs sometimes fail to produce the dark pigmentation in their trotters, which has become one of the distinguishing features of Iberian ham (pata negra). Donato looks after his pigs like few other farmers, sometimes sitting among them while they bathe and drink amid the fast-running streams of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche UNESCO biosphere reserve. Aside from traditional veterinary treatments, Donato’s animals are also treated by a homoeopathist, who cures cuts and grazes with a mixture of extra virgin olive oil and ash from the holm oaks that populate the hills of Huelva. They are de-wormed and treated for parasites with a special recipe, made from mint and sunflower seeds. Donato came to the area in 1990 after selling the construction company he had founded in his native Tarragona, buying a farm in Mal-

adúa, an abandoned village around eight kilometres from the village of Cortegana. He began learning all he could about sustainable pig-breeding and ham-curing, creating a company he registered with the Spanish Ecovalia organic products certification. This performs up to six checks each year on the animals roaming freely over Donato’s 80 hectares of woodland. The hams are now sold throughout Europe and as far afield as Hong Kong and, says Donato: “Our commitment to protecting the environment means we can only produce a certain amount of ham.” He runs what is virtually a one-man operation, helped only by his daughter Marta, who moved to the area six years ago, and a neighbour, who also helps out from time to time. His customers are happy to pay top dollar, knowing they are acquiring a unique product, as well as helping to save a rare breed.

Oh happy day! Adeje to open a Gospel school

INTERNATIONAL gospel singer “The Latonius” is this week directing an Adeje workshop entitled “Uniting Nations”.

And the town is set to become a reference point for Gospel lovers and singers the world over. Culture Councillor Adolfo Alonso has announced that Adeje Council is opening a municipal International Gospel School, with all-year-round courses, classes and performances. Its Gospel roots lie in the old Negro spirituals,

many of which have been sung since the 1600s, becoming popular two centuries later. The first workshop, with the assistance of world-famous, Milwaukee-born singer Tony Jermaine Earl - “The Latonius” as he is known - will be held under the working title “Uniendo Naciones” (uniting nations). The three-day workshop, which began yesterday (Thursday), is aimed at people with or without choral experience. Nearly all places are taken, with huge international interest in the workshop, which will dis-

cuss the Gospel’s place in our lives today. There will also be practical workshops, vocal exercises, choral lessons and the concert tomorrow (Saturday), when The Latonius Choir will perform at the Cultural Centre. Following months of negotiations, Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Cultural Councillor Adolfo Alonso are delighted to confirm that this will be the first in a series of workshops, with the establishment of Adeje’s International Gospel School. It will initially be based at the Cultural Centre for space reasons, but will,

ultimately, move to the Adeje School of Music and Dance. “It is a model music centre and has all the infrastructure needed for this kind of course” said Cllr Alonso. It is also envisaged that a number of international gospel artists will travel from Europe and the US to host workshops and master-classes there. Tony Jermaine Earl was born in Milwaukee into a musical family, and lived and breathed singing from the day he was born. As “The Latonius”, he sings across a range of disciplines - Soul, R&B,

Babies able to shrug off dreaded peanut allergy THE effect of peanuts being fed to babies, in one form or another to avoid the risk of allergy, has been condoned by new research into the matter.

A 2015 study claimed that early exposure to peanut products could cut the risk of allergy by 80%. Now, though, scientists say “long-lasting” allergy protection can be sustained - even when the snacks are later avoided for a year or more. The New England Journal of Medicine study looked at 550 children deemed prone to developing a peanut allergy. The latest paper builds on the results of the 2015 research, which was also carried out by King’s College London. It marked the first

time scientists were able to suggest that exposing children to small amounts of peanut snacks could stave off an allergy. The new study suggests that if a child has consumed peanut snacks within the first 11 months of life, then at the age of five he or she could afford to stop eating the food entirely for a year, and maintain no allergy. Lead author Prof Gideon Lack said: “The research clearly demonstrates that the majority of infants did, in fact, remain protected, and that the protection was long-lasting.” He said that part of the problem was that people lived in a “culture of food fear”. Prof Lack told the BBC News website: “I believe that this fearof-food allergy has become a self-fulfilling prophecy, because the food is excluded from

the diet and, as a result, the child fails to develop tolerance.” The researchers used the same children who took part in the 2015 study - half of whom had been given peanut snacks as a baby - while the remainder had been fed a diet of breast milk alone. “The study found that at six years of age, there was no statistically-significant increase in allergy after 12 months of avoidance, in those who had consumed peanut during the 2015 trial,” said the authors. The children taking part in the study were considered prone to peanut allergy, because they had already developed eczema as a baby - an early-warning sign of allergies. Prof Lack said that further studies were needed to see if the resistance lasted for considerably longer than the 12-month absti-

nence period. He said that in the UK and US combined, 20,000 babies a year were being diagnosed with peanut allergies. He also added that between 1995 and 2005, the number of people being diagnosed had trebled - and this was not because detection methods had become any more advanced as they had remained the same. Prof Barry Kay, from Imperial College London, said the study’s results “point the way to completely fresh thinking on the mechanisms of tolerance to allergenic foods in ‘at risk’ infants”. Michael Walker, a consultant analyst and medical adviser to the government, said of both pieces of research: “Taken together, these are reassuring findings that pave the way to stem the epidemic of peanut allergy.”

Drunken mother shopped by son! A MOTHER was arrested in the Girona province, on mainland Spain, after her 11-year-old son reported her for driving him and his sibling, 10, around while drunk. The boy, pretending he needed the toilet at a petrol garage, forced his mum to stop there. And, while inside, he asked one of the staff to call the police, because his sozzled mum wasn’t able to drive properly. Last Saturday morning, she had picked her children up from the juvenile facility where they live - under state care - to spend the day with them. The 46-year-old has some 30 previous convictions for theft, and violent acts against her children - and teachers at Girona’s Educational Action Residential Centre (CRAE). At about 7.30pm, while they were motoring along the C-35 highway in Vidreres, in La Selva, the eldest child realised his mother was in no fit state to be behind the wheel, so he asked her to stop at the petrol station. A few minutes later, members of the Mossos d’Esquadra regional police and citizen security personnel arrived there, along with an ambulance. The mother became extremely agitated with the kids because of her condition and, when the

police asked her to take a breathalyser and drug test, she refused. She was subsequently arrested, and her children were taken back to the juvenile centre. The Directorate General for Children and Adolescent Services (DGAIA) is issue a report on the events, once it has completed talks with the children, family members and the police officers involved in the arrest. The Childhood and Adolescence Attention Team (EAIA) has also said it will revise the mother’s visitation rights. *Another boozed-up woman, who broke and dislocated her arm, was so drunk that she posed for photos while unaware of the painful damage. Her room-mate wrote on Reddit: “I think the bill will be more terrifying than the pictures.” The pair live in Colorado, US, where people have to pay medical bill themselves if they don’t have health insurance. Her friend said she was in a privately-run hospital, and didn’t have insurance, so the bill could be anything between a mind-blowing £3,500-£50,000. Her pal, under the pseudonym QuercusPercus, wrote: “She broke her ulna and dislocated her radius.”

Alleged rape victim is ‘humiliated’ by judge A FEMALE judge, who “humiliated” an alleged rape victim in Spain by asking whether she had tried closing her legs, has been reported to the national judicial council (CGPJ). The magistrate reportedly interrupted the alleged victim’s account, asking: “Did you close your legs properly? Did you close off your female organs?” The Clara Campoamor association, a women’s rights organisation in Spain, has reported Judge Maria del Carmen Molina to the CGPJ, demanding she be suspended or dismissed over the interrogation, which took place in a special women’s “violence” court in February. Blanca Estrella, CGPJ President said: “This question is offensive, degrading and humiliat-

ing. “It shows a complete lack of professional rigour and ethical treatment of the victim.” The woman, who is five months pregnant, reported her partner to police in Vitoria, northern Spain, for “repeatedly abusing her, both sexually and physically”. She told the Association she was “shocked” by the aggressive line of questioning when she appeared in front of Judge Molina, seeking a restraining order against the accused man. Ms Estrella said: “The magistrate showed obvious disbelief of the testimony of the victim, questioned her without allowing her to answer, asking leading and offensive questions. “Such questions are not only unnecessary to the investigation but are completely offensive,

and they violate the dignity of the victim.” The CGPJ confirmed that the complaint had been received earlier this week. And a spokesman said the magistrate had been asked to give her version of events before a disciplinary committee decides whether to take action. The Clara Campoamor association, named after a politician from the Spanish Republic, who campaigned for women’s suffrage, said that other women had complained about Judge Molina’s attitude. According to Spain’s judicial authorities, 1.1 million complaints of domestic violence against women have been reported since a 2005 law set up specific courts to make it easier for female victims to seek protection.

Terrorists’ military scam falls apart at the seams

SPAIN’S National Police Force, which seized 20,000 military uniforms and accessories intended for Al-Nusra Front and DAESH, also neutralised a highlyefficient, business network. Its main aim was to supply, preserve and strengthen the military structures of terrorist group DAESH with a constant supply of military material. The raids followed on from the anti-terrorist police operation against Jihadi activities on 7th February. Then, seven people were arrested for providing logistical and financial support to the two terrorist groups operating in Syria and Iraq. The National Police opened three goods’ containers (two in Valencia and one in Algeciras) with links to the companies of the

now-dismantled, international network. Some 5,000 kilos of military clothing - about 20,000 uniforms - were on their way to the terrorist organisations. Their business network had responded effectively to orders placed by DAESH, as well as offering the best prices and quality for the goods. It created an international supply network for technological goods, arms and military equipment, which was sent to areas controlled by DAESH. That meant the network was directly supporting and strengthening the terrorist group. The military uniforms, hidden among others in large bundles containing different types of clothing, were of similar characteristics to those seized during the February police searches. The containers carry-

ing military uniforms were declared to hold “second-hand clothing” to avert suspicion and pass the various Customs’ inspections without difficulty. This ploy worked for some time because one of the activities in which the companies of those arrested were engaged was the export and import of second-hand clothing. With the almost-20,000 military uniforms and accessories seized, it would have been possible to fully-equip an army, ready to enter combat in any of the global fighting hotspots where Jihadi terrorists are active. The successful police operation was led and supervised by Central Criminal Investigation Court Number 6, and co-ordinated by the Spanish National High Court’s Public Prosecutor’s Office.

British Museum’s still the biggest attraction LONDON’S British Museum, for the ninth consecutive year, was deemed the most popular 2015 attraction for visitors in Britain.

In fact, the top-10 most-visited centres in the country were all in the capital, according to the latest figures. Visitor-attractions in the UK saw a 3.2% rise in 2015, with Scotland boasting the biggest increase, of 5.48%, with Edinburgh Castle drawing the most people the first time in five years. More than 65 million people visited London attractions, with some 6.82m at the British Museum - up from 6.7m the year before. The National Gallery remained in second place, with 5.9m viewers, although it suffered an 8% drop in numbers. And in third place was The Natural History Museum, with 5.3m visitors. The Southbank Centre and Tate Modern both suffered sizable drops in numbers - 18% and 19% respectively. Tate Modern’s 4.7m total was its lowest in a decade, but figures are expected to improve this year following a high-profile Georgia

O’Keeffe exhibition, and the summer opening of the venue’s extension. O’Keeffe’s Jimson Weed, White Flower No. 1 - considered the most expensive painting by a woman - will be the centrepiece of an exhibition there in July A spokeswoman said.”Tate Modern continues to be the world’s most popular gallery of modern and contemporary art. “We attract around 4.5-5m visitors, and we

achieved our highest, record-breaking year in 2014 with 5.8m visitors, thanks partly to the success of Henri Matisse’ The Cut-Outs.” The Southbank Centre said its falling numbers were “down to the closure for refurbishment of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery from September onwards.” Temporary exhibitions were credited with giving a visitors’ boost to a number of attractions,

including London’s Somerset House, which saw the largest visitors’ increase (31%) in the top 10. It came in at eighth place, with 3.2m. The Royal Academy credited its 33% increase to its Ai Weiwei and summer exhibitions. Meanwhile, the Victoria and Albert Museum’s figures were boosted by record numbers at Alexandra McQueen’s Savage Beauty exhibition. And the National Por-

trait Gallery also had a huge draw with Audrey Hepburn: Portraits of an Icon. Bernard Donoghue, director of the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions, said it was a record year for visitors from overseas and the UK. “More people visited the V&A, the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum, combined, than visited Venice,” he said. “More people visited

the British Museum and the National Gallery, combined, than visited Barcelona, and more people visited the Southbank Centre, Tate Modern and Tate Britain, combined, than visited Hong Kong.” The Library of Birmingham remained the most visited “free” attraction outside London. It came in 11th place with 1.8 visitors. Chester Zoo was the most-visited “paid-for” attraction in England outside London with 1.7m. It showed an 18% visitor increase, thanks to the opening of its Islands development, which recreates six tropical South East Asian Islands - the biggest new zoo development in Europe. Turkey says Yes to keep migrants safe

LEADERS from Europe and Turkey have arrived at an agreement to stem the flow of migrants and refugees reaching the EU through the Balkans - and to shut off the people - smuggling routes.

European Council President Donald Tusk, following Brussels’ talks, said: “The days of irregular migration to Europe are over. “The flow of migrants

passing from Turkey to Greece remains much too high and needs to be brought down significantly.” Turkey, keen to join the EU, has confirmed that it will begin to take back migrants apprehended in the Aegean Sea, in which hundreds have drowned during desperate attempts to reach Greek islands. It will also implement an agreement “to accept the rapid return of all migrants not in need of international protection crossing from Turkey into Greece”. A statement released

after the meeting added: “The Heads of State or Government agreed that bold moves were needed to close down people-smuggling routes, to break the business model of the smugglers, to protect our external borders and to end the migration crisis in Europe. “We need to break the link between getting in a boat and getting settlement in Europe.” Tusk said the EU had agreed to look at resettling some of the millions of refugees currently in Turkey. A “one-in, one-out” system was proposed

at the summit, in which one Syrian refugee would be resettled in the EU for every person sent back to Turkey from Greece. European Commission President JeanClaude Juncker added that refugees who attempt to reach Europe illegally will be put on the bottom of the list for resettlement. Mark Stone, Sky TV’s Europe Correspondent, said that clamping down on the well-trodden migration route would be “very difficult to try to put into place” because some EU courts may rule the

measures proposed are not legal. Another proposal will see Turkey and the EU work together to improve humanitarian conditions inside Syria, identifying “safe zones” where refugees can live. Turkey Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called for 3bn euros (£2.3bn) of EU funds already pledged for refugees to start being used in the coming days - and warned that Ankara would need a further 3bn euros to cope with the Syrian refugees who have already crossed the border into Turkey.

Alexis Tsipras, Prime Minister of Greece, believes many leaders were surprised at Turkey’s “attractive proposals” for managing the migration crisis. A two-day summit will begin on 17th March to finalise each commitment, but any agreement made with Turkey will come with conditions. The country is seeking talks to advance its long-standing ambition of joining the European Union, as well as visa-free travel for Turkish citizens travelling into the Schengen zone.

Dads army thieves get soft sentence MEMBERS of the “Diamond Wheezers” gang, involved in the £14m Hatton Garden jewel heist - said to be the biggest burglary in English history - have been jailed for a total of 34 years.

The raid was carried out over last Easter’s bank holiday weekend, in the heart of London’s diamond district, and the thieves used an industrial drill to break into the vault at Hatton Garden Safety Deposit. They escaped with cash, gold and precious gems from the private boxes, and two-thirds of the haul is still missing. Ringleaders John ‘Kenny’ Collins, 75, of Islington; Daniel Jones,

Hero Chinaman ‘was a big fraud’

A MAN portrayed as a hero in China by caring for his comatosed girlfriend was, she says, actually responsible for her injuries. Liu Fenghe, 24, promised to take care of 20-year-old Lin Yingying after a serious accident left her paralysed in a vegetative state for eight months in 2014. He was said to have spent £21,00 on medical treatment for her, pledging to take care of his girlfriend for the rest of his life. But Lin’s family took her home from hospital last February after they were, reportedly, unhappy about his hospital visits. Lin, who regained consciousness last May, now alleges that Liu was a big fraud because he caused her injury. She said he whacked her on the head with a heavy rolling pin after she accidentally burnt some bread in the bakery business they ran together. She also accused him of physically abusing before, but said she had been too frightened to tell anyone. Her family have now referred her allegations to the police.

61, of Enfield, and Terry Perkins, 67, also from Enfield, were each sentenced to seven years, of which they will serve half. The group’s oldest member 77-year-old Brian Reader, of Dartford, who was dubbed the “Master” by his coconspirators, has had his sentence suspended until a later date - if he is still alive! He fell ill in Belmarsh prison and, after suffering a second stroke, and was deemed unfit to appear in court. Reader and the other three ringleaders pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary last September. Of the other gang members, Carl Wood, of Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and William Lincoln, of Bethnal Green, east London, were convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary and conspiracy to conceal, convert or transfer criminal property, after a trial at Woolwich Crown Court. Wood was jailed for six years and Lincoln for seven. Plumber Hugh Doyle,

48, was convicted of laundering the stolen loot after letting the gang use his workshop forecourt to transfer bags of jewellery between vehicles. But because of his limited role, the judge gave him a suspended sentence of 21 months. A relieved Doyle claimed outside the court that he had been “just sucked into it”, adding: “I feel sorry for the victims.” However, another thief, known only as Basil and instrumental in helping the gang get into the vault, remains at large. Craig Turner, Flying Squad Detective superintendent, said: “This was an audacious burglary, directly centred on, and targeting, the heart of the diamond community within London. “Those responsible thought they had got away with it. However, a meticulous police investigation ensured this was not the case. “There may be people out there who feel sympathy in relation to those sentenced to-

day. However, these were all career, callous criminals, who had no thought in relation to the property they stole from the victims.” Det Supt Turner said the police were continuing the hunt for “Basil” and stressed there was a £20,000 reward on offer for information leading to his arrest and conviction. The daring heist had been at least three years in the planning, with Jones searching the Internet for highpowered drills in advance. The gang were let into the building before climbing down a lift-shaft, disabled an alarm and boring through the vault wall. Their equipment failed, initially, so they left and returned a second night to complete the task, breaking open 73 of the 1,000 safe deposit boxes and stealing the contents. But their success was short-lived, mainly because Collins used his own car to recce the premises on the second night. Investigators traced the car through Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and identified Collins and the rest of the gang, who continued to meet up to discuss what they had done. Secret police bugs and cameras - and mobile telephone analysis - led to their arrests and charges.

AC/DC cut tour after deaf threat for singer HEAVY metal group AC/ DC, on tour in America, have postponed their 10 remaining shows because lead singer Brian Johnson has been told he risks total deafness if he carries on performing. The band said gigs would be rescheduled with, probably, a guest vocalist. But fans are uncertain about the European leg of their Rock Or Bust tour, set to begin on 7th May in Lisbon. Johnson joined AC/DC in 1980 after the band’s former lead singer, Bon

Scott, died following a night of heavy drinking. Concern over the 68-year-old’s hearing is the latest prob-

OJ knife found? LOS Angeles Police are testing a knife, believed to have been found at a former home of OJ Simpson, whose 1995 murder trial, and subsequent acquittal, captivated the US.

Someone claiming to be a construction worker gave an off-duty police officer the knife years ago and he kept it, thinking the case was closed. But though the house was razed in 1998, police recently recovered it and are having the blade tested for DNA and hair samples. Simpson was accused of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, in June 1994. But a jury found the former American football star not guilty after a dramatic, televised trial. Police cast some doubt on whether the knife was connected to the OJ Simpson case at a news conference last Friday, saying it could be “bogus”. Captain Andrew Neiman, of the LAPD, said. “If this story is accurate, you’d think any time you come into contact with evidence that you should submit it to investigators. I don’t know why that didn’t happen.” NBC News, citing police sources, reported that the knife was of a utility type and inconsistent with the one used in the crime. Simpson, serving a 33-year sentence for armed robbery and kidnapping in Las Vegas, cannot be prosecuted again under US law for the murders. His ex-wife and her friend were found stabbed in the head and neck in the yard of Brown’s home. Authorities asked

Simpson to turn himself in after the murders, but he failed show up at the police station. Hours later, he was spotted inside a White Ford Bronco, leading to a slow-speed pursuit by police across Los Angeles’ motorways. The chase was broadcast on live TV to millions of enthralled viewers. And Simpson was acquitted of the murders in 1995, in what, for many, was the trial of the century. The acquittal divided the US, on racial lines partially. At first, as Simpson fled, pursued by police and paparazzi on live television, his supporters waved placards as they cheered him on. The question now is whether modern DNA techniques can prove whether their loyalty to the man they called “The Juice” was misplaced. Of course, the knife may turn out to have nothing to do with the murders. In any case, the “double jeopardy” law protects Simpson from a retrial, and he’s behind bars anyway. But he can apply for parole from next year, which will surely reignite the controversy. When it comes to OJ, the fascination, the division and the heartbreak never seem to end. He eventually surrendered after 90 minutes and later assembled a “dream team” of highlypaid lawyers to contest the case. The 10-month trial created a huge media frenzy. Television networks gained huge ratings from the trial proceedings, and many magazine covers were also devoted to it. Simpson later lost a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the victims’ families. The case has returned to prominence via the TV mini-series American Crime Story: The People v OJ Simpson.

EU debate slows employment rate By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct

UNCERTAINTY surrounding the EU Referendum is still in the news, and it has impacted on February’s employment growth.

In fact, it has shown that business activity and new work both expanded at the slowest rate since March 2013. This matched reports from service companies in China and the Eurozone. After seven years of interest rates being at a historic low, there is speculation on the financial markets that the Bank of England could cut interest rates even lower. This certainly puts paid to any talk of the

Bank increasing interest rates in the near future, and reinforces belief that the 0.05% rate could even continue into 2017. Sterling made a slight improvement versus the US dollar last Friday, but that was more as a result of disappointing data from the States. The Euro has had a mixed time, falling against the generally-stronger dollar but gaining against the beleaguered pound. However, the Euro was also hit by Brexit, with investors showing concern and weighing potential impact should the UK leave the EU. With the Eurozone producing a negative inflation reading of -0.2%, the ECB (European Central Bank) is now under more pressure to increase the size and extend the length of the current QE (Quantitative Easing) programme. This was introduced last December to boost growth in the

Eurozone economy and avoid negative inflation. The extent of any such new measures could, theoretically, result in euro weakness, sending it tumbling against the Pound, which is good news for Euro buyers….. If you’re buying currency, it is important to keep up with these developments. With three major announcements coming from the ECB over the next week, the market will likely remain volatile. Watch this space… Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, the friendly experts at Currencies Direct are just a phone call away whenever you need them. At home in Spain since 1999, they have 10 offices across the country, including one in Tenerife, and are set to open more Spanish offices soon. Spain eyes gib ‘pounce’ SPAIN is threatening to “pounce on Gibraltar the very next day” if Britain votes to leave the EU in the June referendum.

Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo issued the warning on a Spanish breakfast radio show. While he hoped Britain would remain in the EU, he said its withdrawal would represent a “golden opportunity” for his country. Garcia-Margallo told Radio Nacional listeners: “It’s true that this gives us an opportunity to have an even more

important role than the one we already have with the United States. “And don’t forget about one other thing: we’ll be talking about Gibraltar the very next day.” Thousands of jobs could be at risk if Spain does attempt to grab The Rock because Brits and locals alike earn big wages there with top companies benefiting from its low tax rates. But Ukip’s Julia Reid, MEP for South West Counties and Gibraltar, said Gibraltar had nothing to fear from Brexit. She added: “Any move for the outpost, which is as British and Britain itself, would be repealed, as has every attempt

been for hundreds of years. “And even if Britain votes to leave the EU, it doesn’t make any difference because Gibraltar will still be British territory - and that’s that! “It sounds more like an old communique from Buenos Aires, rather than a new one from Madrid.” On another sobering note, Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabien Picardo said: “It is safer and more secure for us to remain in the EU to deny Mr Margallo the opportunity to pounce on us. “We have fought to ensure that Gibraltar is able to vote in the Brexit referendum so that we can influence that decision.”

Do make sure the kids are all right by n332.es

IT’S very important to ensure the safety of children in cars. As of 1st October 2015, all children measuring 135cm in height or less must ride in the rear seats of a vehicle, irrespective of their age.

And the correct seat must provided, appropriate to their size and weight, although there are a number of exceptions to the rule. For example, when the vehicle does not have rear seats; when all rear seats are already occupied by others under the same characteristics, and where it is not possible to install approved child restraints in those rear seats. These are the only occasions when children may occupy a front seat, but they must always use the restraint system approved for their height and weight. The amendment to this provision also stipulates that child restraints must be installed in the vehicle in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer - with instructions to indicate how and what kind of vehicles can be used safely. The modification of the law also reflects the scientific evidence from numerous studies, which demonstrate the benefit of children travelling in the rear seats

of vehicles to strengthen their protection. A US study looked at 5,751 vehicle occupants under 15, who had suffered from serious car accidents. The report shows that sitting in the back seat had a protective effect with respect to serious injury or death. A further study in Australia concluded that the risk of death in children aged under four involved in an incident while travelling in a car was doubled if they sat in the front. The risk of death was four times higher if the person was under one year, according to the study. Not only is the overall risk of injury higher in the front seats, but also the severity of injuries sustained, according to the CIREN institution, the Crash Injury Research Engineering Network. The change to the law in Spain was prompted by the DGT seeing growing concerns for the safety of children in vehicles. In 2014, two of the 14 children under 12 who were killed while travelling in vehicles, were not wearing any safety device at the time of the accident. It was the same for nine out of the 82 children who were seriously injured; they, too, were not wearing any kind of restraint. The DGT, therefore, made it one of its priority objectives in the 2011-2020 Road Safety Strategy, to ensure that no children lose

their life as a result of not being properly restrained. Therefore, as well as clarifying the laws and making them easier to understand, the DGT has also increased the powers of the traffic police in dealing with adults who fail to take necessary responsibility for children. These include the immediate immobilisation of a vehicle in which children are found to be travelling without appropriate safety restraints. To make the matter even clearer, there are a number of Golden Rules that must be followed regarding children in vehicles. *Never carry a child in your arms, or use the same seat belt protecting the adult *The use of child restraint systems (CRS) reduce the risk of death by 75% and the severity of injuries by 90% *Make sure the seat is properly installed. It should not move and ought to be properly secured, the recommended option being the Isofix anchorage system *The child’s head should never hover higher than, or over the back of, the seat. If this happens, it must be replaced by another of a suitable size *If the child has to ride in the front seat, because of one of the three exceptions, and if the vehicle has front airbags, you must only use a rear-facing restraint if the airbag has been deactivated *Always make sure the restraints are wellanchored, even on short journeys, when the highest number of risk-behaviours accumulate It is recommended that you continue to use appropriate and approved child-restraint systems until the child reaches 150cm in height. Once a child is taller than that, they must use a seat-belt. It is important to note that it is the responsibility of the adults transporting children to ensure their safety, as well as their own.

Inside Obama’s White House: 100 Days

Don't Miss...

Tuesday 15 March, BBC2, 21.00 For millions of people, the election of the first African American President, Barack Obama marked a new era of hope. The energetic young President was eager to end the war in Iraq, close Guantanamo, fight climate change, and provide healthcare for all. What happened instead was the worst economic collapse in living memory, minimal cooperation from the Republican opposition, and the rise of a populist anti-big-government Tea Party. This four-part series, made by Brook Lapping for BBC Two, is an authoritative account of Obama’s successes and failures as told by his inner circle, including: David Axelrod, Rahm Emanuel, Eric Holder, John Kerry, Robert Gates, Tim Geithner and Larry Summers - and his chief adversaries. This is the story of how Obama tried to reshape America, from inside a White House unlike any other in history. When elected, Obama promised to change America. However, he discovered that change would be harder then he predicted and his plans were knocked off course by the worst financial downturn since the Great Depression. To solve this national crisis and pass his rescue plan, Obama needed to bring together the two parties in Congress. The programme shows how, overcoming constant criticism and blocking from his Republican opponents, Obama passed an $800 billion stimulus package - the largest in US history. Obama’s top advisors at the time tell the story, including David Axelrod, Chief Strategist for his presidential campaign and then Senior Advisor; Christina Romer, Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers; and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. This episode also tells the story about how Obama crashed a private meeting of fellow heads of government to persuade the Chinese to tackle climate change at the Copenhagen summit. It also focuses of his struggle to shut down Guantanamo, as told by his ally Attorney General Eric Holder, and Republican Congressman Frank Wolf.

Britain’s Secret Slavery Business BBC2, 22.00

Investigative journalist Darragh MacIntyre (pictured) exposes the reality of modern-day slavery and exploitation in Britain. From our factories and food producers, our carwashes and nail bars this oneoff current affairs documentary lifts the lid on how exploited workers are embedded in parts of our economy. In Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, Darragh hears from one of the Hungarians trafficked to work at Kozee Sleep, a bed factory which supplied to major high street retailers. He reveals how the workers were promised a good job but were paid as little as £10 a week and forced to live in slum-type conditions. The film reveals how people are exploited up and down the country, from the fishing industry in Scotland to the car washes in London. And shockingly, it reveals that this problem not only affects migrants from Europe and other parts of the world - but also people from the UK.

Houdini & Doyle ITV1, 22.15

Stephen Mangan (Episodes) plays Sir Arthur Conan Doyle alongside Michael Weston (Six Feet Under, House) as Harry Houdini, two of the most fascinating and iconic characters of the early 20th century: reallife friends, real-life adversaries, real-life crime solvers. Harry Houdini: master magician, escape artist, born penniless and now the highest paid performer in the world and he wants everyone to know it. He refuses to believe in the paranormal. As a professional magician and master of illusion he knows there’s nothing supernatural about magic. To him, everything unexplained is a trick, a gimmick, or a fraud. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the creator of the greatest detective of all time - Sherlock Holmes - but is also a passionate believer in the paranormal. Because, having lost someone very close to him, he desperately wants to find a way of communicating with them. This fundamental difference between the two men leads to conflict... and humour... and competition. High-minded competition in the pursuit of the truth and ridiculous petty competition because they’re... guys. But despite all this, they need each other. Doyle needs Houdini because he is gullible. Houdini needs Doyle because he is wrong. Houdini & Doyle draws heavily on the rich history of the period. At the turn of the 20th century the Metropolitan Police, mired in the ways of the 19th century, were overwhelmed with bizarre and often inexplicable cases so they turned to outsiders including, believe it or not, Houdini and Doyle, who collaborated with New Scotland Yard on some unsolved and inexplicable crimes. What can we believe? What should we believe? Is cynicism to be admired or is it what makes us human? Is reason the antithesis of hope? Houdini, Doyle and Adelaide investigate the murder of a nun in one of the notorious Magdalene Laundries. A witness claims the killer is a young woman who was tormented by the nun. The only problem is, that young woman has been dead for six months.

Steve Backshall’s Extreme Mountain Challenge BBC2, 20:00

The second episode picks up where episode one left off with Steve and the climbing team halfway up the unclimbed, sheer-sided face of a remote tepui, about to make one last desperate attempt to reach the summit. It is then on to the second stage of the expedition. Joining up with a team of elite Italian cavers, Steve ventures deep within a tepui - inside a newly discovered cave. Within this dark underworld, the team encounter strange creatures, ancient mysteries and the raw geological forces that give the tepuis their unique shape. But nothing can prepare them for an attempt to forge a path into unexplored areas of the cave - a dangerous mission of intense claustrophobia and nerveshredding tension. To end the adventure, Steve reunites with the climbing team to abseil alongside the Angel Falls -the highest waterfall on earth.

Behind Closed Doors BBC1, 21.00

With unprecedented access to the Thames Valley Police Domestic Abuse Teams and the victims of violence they are helping, Behind Closed Doors gives an extraordinary insight into the most common violent crime to take place in the home. Shot over 12 months, and starting from the moment a 999 call is received, the film follows three brave women who each waive their right to anonymity to show how insidious and terrifying domestic abuse can be. The complex emotions involved when someone you love becomes violent towards you are also exposed, and the difficulties for police when those feelings mean that victims are not completely honest. With an unfolding, present-tense narrative, the film also exposes the lack of consistency in terms of the length of sentence given to offenders. When the police repeatedly take one perpetrator to court only to have magistrates release him again and again, the film demonstrates how the huge ordeal of going to court for these victims of domestic abuse does not mean that, in their eyes, justice will automatically follow.

Further Tales from Northumberland with Robson Green ITV1, 20.00

Robson Green returns for a third instalment of this popular series, as he continues to explore his home county - one of the most fascinating, remote and beautiful parts of Great Britain. This time, in each episode Robson tackles a different journey through Northumberland - from hiking the Pennine Way, to travelling along the border with Scotland, from travelling by air to get a bird’s eye view of the region, to following the route of the River Tyne. Along the way he’ll tell the stories of the people and landmarks he encounters on his travels. Robson heads to the seaside in South-East Northumberland to visit the men and women who are helping to preserve the region’s proud coastal heritage. Off the coast of Blyth, Robson is shown the ropes on board a 100-year-old tall ship.

Speeding Wars ITV1, 21.00

In rural Wales, Dyfed Powys Police have a problem with drivers using their roads as if they were racetracks. Throughout the summer, the police carry out special operations targeting those who put their lives and the lives of others in danger, so they can experience the thrill of going fast. Unfortunately, with so many vehicles exceeding the limits, it’s not long before accidents happen. In contrast, the Isle of Man has no speed limits at all on some of its country roads. Every year, they hold the Isle of Man TT Races, which sees bikers racing up to 200mph. But it’s also an excuse for bike fanatics from all over the world to head to the island and try the roads out for themselves - driving as fast as they can without breaking the law. Across the UK, members of the public have taken speeding matters into their own hands. In Ticknall, Derbyshire, Kevin Harris has set up a Speed Watch group determined to combat speeding drivers. But it’s not just the drivers who are unhappy. Kevin, however, is unrepentant and committed to making his local road safer. We also meet Perry Antoniou, the owner of a drag racing team, who has allegedly been clocked driving at 84mph in a 50 zone. He calls in specialist motoring solicitor, Hojol Uddin, at great expense, to take his case all the way to court, rather than take the three points that would potentially damage his reputation.

Mary Berry’s Easter Feast BBC2, 20.00 Mary Berry is not just a woman of flans and fairy cakes, but also a woman of faith. She has made no secret of the fact that her Christianity has helped her through life’s toughest moments. In this series, at the holiest time in the Christian calendar, Mary explores the roots of her faith through the medium for which she is best known - food. How does Britain eat its way through Easter? Mary shares her favourite Easter recipes, including hot cross buns, Simnel cake and roast lamb, and learns on this gastronomic adventure how every Christian community and culture, from Russians to Filipinos to Caribbeans to Italians and Poles, has its own way of commemorating and celebrating this most important festival through food - all religiously and culturally symbolic and distinct.

Brendan O’Carroll: My Family At War

11th March - 17th March 2016

W ednesday

BBC2, 21.00 In a deeply personal film, writer and comedian Brendan O’Carroll (Mrs Brown’s Boys) tells the story of the Irish

Easter Rising. Exactly 100 years ago, in Easter week 1916, some 1,600 Irish rebels took over the centre of Dublin. Despite overwhelming odds the rebels held out against the forces of the British Empire for six days, until they were shelled into submission. Three of those rebels were Brendan O’Carroll’s uncles. Now, on the centenary of the revolt, Brendan tells the dramatic story of the Rising and looks into the part his family played in it. He explores how the Rising, though a complete military failure, sent shock waves through the British Empire and signalled the birth of today’s Irish Republic. He talks to historians and some of the descendants of the men and women who fought for and against an independent Ireland. The intimate memories, pictures, films and letters they share bring to life different perspectives on the experience his uncles lived through. Through his investigation, he reveals what their story tells us about the wider crisis that shook the British Empire. With access to freshly released records, Brendan shines new light on a dark and tumultuous chapter that would go on to shape the history of the British Isles for the next century.

Shop Well for Less BBC1, 20:00 The One Show’s Alex Jones and business journalist Steph McGovern are on a mission to help families change the way they shop without changing their lifestyle. In this episode, Steph and Alex are in Hertfordshire with a family who love to shop as a way of spending time together and having fun, but it’s an expensive pastime and this family are hoping they can become cannier with their cash. To analyse their shopping habits Steph and Alex secretly spy on them and watch as they splash the cash, egging each other on to spend. To show them the error of their ways, Alex and Steph sneak into their house and take their possessions to stock a pop-up shop; the Garretts are shocked when they are confronted with how much they already own and what they have spent. This is a brand-loyal family, and Professor Avi Shankar talks about why we emotionally connect with brands.

Scruffts: Britain’s Favourite Dog Channel 4, 20:00

Six handlers. All competing in the world’s largest and most famous dog show: Crufts. But they’re not the pedigree pooches who compete to be labelled Best in Show. These are the loveable family pets competing to win the Scruffts title. While Crufts has been celebrating pedigrees since 1891, today, through the Scruffts competition, Crufts have opened their famous competition to the crossbreeds that most of us own as pets. Competition is intense as just six from 2000 entrants make it through to the final round. The finalists emerge as winners from their individual categories, including Child’s Best Friend, Most Handsome Dog, Golden Oldie and Best Rescue. But who will be the ultimate victor? This warm, witty and entertaining documentary celebrates the dogs and their handlers who might not have the breeding but have the character and class to win the title.

Jo Brand’s Hell Of A Walk For Sport Relief

11th March - 17th March 2016

T hursday

BBC1, 21.00

Documenting a remarkably different charity challenge from any other in Sport Relief history, this hour-long, one-off programme on BBC One looks back on the seven day challenge that saw comedian Jo Brand walk east to west across the country, covering 135 miles for Sport Relief 2016. Made by BBC Bristol, the programme provides exclusive behind-thescenes access to the much-loved 58 year-old as she battles the physical and mental effects of the trek, in a raw and revealing account that people across the UK will be able to identify with. Jo - a reluctant hero on the challenge - says she wants to represent all the overweight middle-aged women who are rarely in the media spotlight for positive reasons. As Jo says, she wants them to “get up off their bums, do a bit of exercise and live a bit longer” - as she proves that even she can do this, and for seven whole days! Her hellish week starts on the Humber Bridge, where she battles the elements to complete her first day. There is no let-up on day two, with Jo walking for an exhausting 14.5 hours, which is supposed to be improved by Alan Davies joining her for the entire day... As Jo reaches the half-way point in the walk, to try and keep her spirits up she is joined by another mate - fellow comedian Lee Mack. But the day does not prove to be the stroll in the park she had hoped for, and as she struggles for energy with every step, she is helped along by her aim of “leaving London as a barrel and returning as a stick”. The programme goes on to tell the inside story of the dramatic fifth day when the challenge became news, when Jo is blown off her feet by a battering gale from Storm Jonas. Undeterred by biting cold, gale force winds of over 50mph and torrential rain, she battles her way across the Pennines, joined by pal and past challenge veteran Davina McCall for the closing stages.

Murder: The Big Bang BBC2, 21.00

Ten years ago, an off-duty policeman was killed in cold blood in a swimming-pool car park. That much is not in dispute. What has never been ascertained is precisely which one of the three armed robbers serving life for PC Prescott’s murder actually pulled the trigger. Seven at the time, Jess witnessed the crime and has been tormented by this and numerous other gaps in the official account. She’s still angry now and it’s an emotion that has got her in trouble over the years. Jess is on the final day of a sentence in a youth offender institution herself. She’s been talking with a therapist there in an attempt to resolve her issues. The therapist has promised to contact the convicted trio and ask them to consider providing Jess with the precious gift of truth. Jess is hoping against hope that she’ll find out before she leaves the institution in the morning.

Tammy and Stuart live in an outdated bungalow in a pretty village in West Sussex. The bungalow’s main living rooms are completely starved of light. Tammy and Stuart are desperate to create a family home but with a budget of just £50,000, their options are severely limited. Will Alsop is arguably one of the country’s most renowned architects. Will designs a dramatic barrel-vaulted extension to the rear of Tammy and Stuart’s bungalow, complete with specially constructed exposed curved beams, a shiny aluminium roof and four porthole windows. It’s an audacious, unique design. In such a sleepy part of the country, what will the neighbours think?

Let us entertain you By Brad Chermside

IT is with great pleasure that I begin the first of a new fortnightly column, keeping you abreast of all that’s going down on the Tenerife entertainment scene, and the phenomenal artistes who set the night light when the sun dives down behind La Gomera.

Four years ago, I arrived here with my suitcase packed full of the usual hopes and fears: Will I get a job? Where will I live? Can I make the dream come true of living in a place where I

can do what I love every day of the year? I needn’t have wor-

ried. The Island has treated me like a longlost son, and I am eter-

nally grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way. Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that my show would be so well received, that I’d be a three-time winner at the Tenerife Entertainment Awards, and land a spot in the cast of The Sound of Musicals. I’m still counting my lucky stars. Reflecting further, so much has happened in the entertainment world in those four years since I touched down. Many have arrived and achieved great success and popularity; Tony Kay, Lisa Bridge and Keith George spring to mind immediately. Others have returned to the motherland and left tourists and fellowartists with a plethora of fond memories, such as Mike Carlton, Paul Lee and Paul Stone. Acts which were packing out venues when I got here still continue

to do so - Billy Porter and Crush to name but a couple. Mister Sister and Roxy Rosario have sought fame and fortune on Britain’s Got Talent and The Voice, respectively, and have done themselves and our celebrated circuit proud. New venues like the Sky Bar have sprung up and quickly come to prominence, while old favourites like The Thistle and Dragon have, sadly, closed their doors for business. But it’s fair to say that there’s always something going on! In my column, I aim to bring you the news and points of views, not only of the artists but everybody associated with the entertainment industry – bar-owners, hotel entertainment teams and event-organisers included. I’ll also bring into the spotlight those who go about their business quietly, yet contribute

just as much as those always grabbing the headlines. Among a whole host of unsung heroes making many people’s holidays, there are dancers, comperes and animators, who remain in the shadows. Whether it’s me or someone else writing this column in four years, I wonder what he or she will be reporting on? Who’ll still be here? Who will have moved on to pastures new? What venues will be leading the way? Will Steve Carney (Bahia Beach compere) still be pulling his jeans up, Simon Cowellstyle? One thing is for sure. We know it’s never going to be boring! Between columns, you can follow me on my blog: www.rockdjtenerife.wordpress. com, on Facebook by liking the page ‘The Rock DJ,’ and on Twitter @THEROCKDEEJAY.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

Nil by mouth! SO popular is our Tenerife Loves Karaoke competition that at the Penny Farthing in Paloma Beach, Los Cristianos, those who could not get a seat inside still watched and cheered from the terrace outside.

With eighteen singers for the third heat, the support for all them and the competition, was just as vibrant as it had been in previous rounds And such was the high level of performance that the judges, Pauline and Robin (representing Oasis Fm), Penny Farthing compere Ray, and Jacqui (representing the bar), followed previous judging committees by having a hard

time finding the three heat finalists - if not the toughest time so far. It took them ages to make up their minds as the singers waited and waited for the verdict because of the close scores, which led to checks and rechecks. Finally, the three heat finalists chosen, Lynn, Rena and Nil, guaranteed our first female in the 2016 final. After the final three had offered their final song, the judges delivered their verdict, with Nil Van Aelst’s “Going Home” emerging triumphant to clinch her spot in the Grand Final, where she will join Mauro Rodrigo Ferreira Da Silva and Don Taylor. The final takes place in June at Showtime, Las Americas, where the heat winners will compete for the 1,000euro cash prize and the title of Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2016.

If you would like to compete for this fabulous prize, please HURRY, HURRY, HURRY! All venues have been announced and places are being filled quickly, so if you are interested in competing at any or all of the

heats, which are open to everyone over the age of 13, every nationally and to anyone who has entered before, call Oasis Fm on 902 232 102, register at the relevant venues or at facebook oasisfm Tenerife. Otherwise, just come

along, have a great night out and enjoy being one of the many happy faces in the audience. This year’s competition is proudly sponsored by Bombay Babu Indian Tandoori Restaurants, which gives you three perfect

places to have best Indian food in Tenerife including their latest restaurant, in the commercial centre in La Tatejita. This passion is shown in the results that have been achieved since the Playa de las Americas branch opened in May 2015. We have a dynamic team who are constantly on the move, seeking out not just properties to sell but also buyers to buy them. With the advance of technology and the everchanging market place, some agents have been

left behind. But we have moved with the times and have embraced all the additional tools which have been placed at our disposal. We are marketing properties to a global audience, via a series of multi-lingual, multi-national campaigns. No stone is left unturned in our drive to match customers with their ideal dream properties. We find out exactly what each purchaser is looking for with regards to property size, area, facilities and any specific requirements. We then put together a selection of suitable properties and spread the viewings over a few

days, or a week, so that they can get a real taste of both the properties and of the areas in which they are located. This method gives us time to show them the real Tenerife as we help them discover the sights, sounds and flavours of this wonderful Island. We’re not all overweight

By Val Sainsbury

Food Review

Kikiriki, it’s more than just a cock-a-doodle-do MANY of you will probably know of Kirikiki, this little Canarian treasure which has been established for the last nine years in the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos, and Cabo Blanco before that.

It is a long-term favourite with locals and tourists alike. And although this family-run eatery is famous for its various tasty chicken dishes, this week we decided to sample the other delights on their expansive menu. To start with, we ordered the smoked salmon and onion tart, along with creamy spinach gratin. The tart came with a grilled topping and served with a crisp side-salad. The spinach was smooth and cheesy with a hint of pepper.

They were an ideal combination for sharing. For mains, we went for the Grilled loin of Cod, topped with garlic, as recommended by owner Antonio, and then it was a toss up between the Roast Suckling Pig or tender Leg of Lamb? In the end the pig won, and it came crispy on the outside but with a melt-in-the-mouth inside after being slowroasted in the oven. It was served with a traditional home-made apple sauce on the side, along with sautéd potatoes and seasonal veg - plenty for even the heartiest of appetites. The fish was also to die for, a nice plump fillet that flaked easily at the touch of your fork. Be aware, though, that this dish is sure to keep away the vampires. If you’re not such a garlic lover (or are on a hot date), then ask for the other fish options, simply grilled or with a light sauce.

As previously mentioned, they still have their numerous chicken options available: delicious roast chicken as a half or quarter-portion, chicken breast with Pepper, mushroom or Roquefort sauce. And not forgetting the amazing home-made desserts, almond cake, apple cake or lemon meringue to name a few. All this was washed down with half a litre of their easy-to-drink house red, served in traditional terracotta jugs. You may be wondering when you can sample these delights for yourself? Well, they are normally open Tuesday to Saturday, 5-10pm and Sundays from 1pm onwards. However, over the festive period there are a few little changes, so take note. Finally, as a thank-you to their loyal customers over the years, they are offering a 40% discount (Yes, 40%!) on orders over 10 euros on Sundays between 1-5pm.

MANY children and adults are incorrectly accused of being overweight, because of misleading BodyMass-Index (BMI) tests, according to researchers.

They say the tests are unreliable because they doesn’t measure, accurately, whether someone is carrying excess weight, or is more likely to die. Slim adults may have dangerous, internal (visceral) fat around the abdominal organs. But, because their weight is within the BMI “normal” range, they are classed as being healthy. The findings are further evidence that the measurement, widely used by the NHS and schools, cannot be relied upon. There is no way of distinguishing between muscle and fat, so rugby players - and other wellbuilt athletes - may be classified as being obese. The method is also flawed when used for children, even though it is employed in schools to measure all kids aged five and 11 as part of a NHS monitoring scheme. Many parents of slim youngsters have been sent letters from school nurses, urging them to attend weight-management classes. Dr William Leslie, of the University of Manitoba

in Canada, compared the records of almost 50,500 middle-aged men and women. Their BMIs and fat percentages were observed, and whether or not they were still alive. He found that the two groups most likely to have died had either a low BMI, or a high percentage of body-fat. Those with a high BMI - classified as being overweight or obese - were actually in relativelygood health, and were often very fit. Dr Leslie, whose study is published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, said: “The simple messaging that we’re all too fat, and should be thinner, is based on BMI. “It’s an over-simplification of a more-complex story. There are some people who are in the overweight or obese range, but they may not necessarily be an unhealthy weight because they have a large amount of muscle tissue. “I’m not saying that BMI isn’t helpful - clearly, it is. But it’s a crude measure, and body composition is not accurately captured by BMI alone.” He added: “To say that people are obese implies that they have too much fat, and BMI may misclassify some of them as having excess fat, which isn’t the case. “At the other end of the scale, just because you’re not in the obese range doesn’t mean you don’t carry excess fat.” Around 60% of adults, and 20% of children aged 11, are either obese or overweight, as classified

by their BMI. In January, researchers from the University of California called for the measurement to be scrapped, claiming it was wrongly giving adults a “death sentence”. They also pointed out that many were being penalised wrongly by health insurers, who considered their risks of dying to be higher than they really were. Tam Fry, chair of the Child Growth Foundation, said: “The thing to remember is that BMI is a waste of time. All it will do is tell you how tall, how short, how thin or how fat a child is on that given day. “If you are to make any kind of judgement appropriate for individual children, you either have to measure them again in three-to-six months, or use clinical judgement to determine whether they are normal, or overweight. “If they are sporty, that immediately tells you they will have more muscle, which weighs one-and-a-half times as much as fat. And BMI takes no account of that. “When making a judgement about individuals, you have to actually see them holistically [as a whole], and know a bit about them - whether they are sporty or not, or tall for their age. “It is really important that a clinical judgement is made by somebody who knows what he/she is doing - a healthcare professional. “Measurements taken at school are sent to parents at home, without clinical assessment. “A computer inputs the measurements and BMI into a pre-formed letter, and that can annoy parents. They know exactly how their children live, exercise and eat, and their standard of living. “Only the interaction between the health professional and parents can achieve a sensible outcome. “BMI is a useful measure, but only when taken sequentially, so a curve can predict the child’s growth, and whether it is normal or veering towards overweight or underweight. “And for that, you need two, ideally three, measurements.”

Chill out… keep cool!

By Miruna Voicu WINDOW dressings are very important in any interior- design scheme, but maybe more so, here in Tenerife, because we tend to have bigger windows than in the UK.

Traditional Canarian houses are more likely to have small, shuttered windows to keep the heat out. But builders were quick to realise that large patio doors let in lots of light and sunshine, and show off that stunning view. They are a major selling point with non-Canarians. However, the reality is that these lovely windows let in lots of light, but lots of heat as well. From a practical point of view, you need to choose window dressings that will work for you. This presents two issues, from an interior-design point of view. Firstly, curtains are a very large block of colour and/or pattern to introduce to any scheme, so you need to be sure what you are doing, if you choose something bold. That´s not to say you couldn’t have bright-red curtains, for example, but you’d need to ensure that the rest of the room was relatively neutral to balance them, or they would be too overpowering. If you choose a bold pattern, go for a plain sofa in a toning colour, perhaps, with a couple

of scatter-cushions to match the curtains, so everything is co-ordinated. Secondly, because these big windows are likely to let in a lot of heat, you need to be practical. In the UK, windows are kept small, and are often dressed with swags and swathes of material, to keep out the cold. Here, the opposite is true. You can choose from a variety of styles to dress your window, but the best way to keep the heat out is to install suncurtains. Close them when you go out, and you´ll return to a lovely, cool home. Various choices are available. The old, silver-backed plastic curtains are still around, but most people go for a white version, or choose from the wide range of coloured fabrics which have a black-out layer. These perform the task of keeping the heat out, while looking like a pair of normal curtains. You will need only one set, instead of the additional plastic pair. They will look nice, and match

your colour scheme! Sun-curtains are also a fabulous option for the bedroom. Whether you take a siesta in the afternoon, sleep in at the weekend, or have a young child who doesn’t want to go to bed while it’s still light outside, they will keep your bedroom dark and cool. There are lots of readymade curtains available, but there’s nothing like a pair of made-to-measure ones that form the perfect frame for your window. They are proportionally easy on the eye, and are exactly the right height to do their job, allowing you to mop the floor without staining them. Made-to-measure curtains need not be expensive. A professional should visit your home, measure up and install them for you, guaranteeing the perfect fit. Just choose the colour in the comfort of your own home. This makes the decision easier, as you will see it in the actual setting. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.

NUMBERS By Carl Pattison HAVE you done it? Are you a victim of it? Have you gone “colourblind”? I’m talking about your hair colour, and maybe the lack of it! Very rarely, in the salon, is a cut complete without the added touch of colour. A correctly-coloured head of hair brings a haircut to life, and finishes off what we have just created. Find me a celeb with a natural hair colour. Look for those in the public eye when you can say that their “natural” colour does wonders for their hair. Now and then, adding a colour to a beautiful,

natural shade would be a crime, but very few are blessed with this. The correct colour will enhance your complexion, and the style of your haircut. It can transform the simplest of cuts into something to make heads turn. This week, I had a client who received three compliments before she had even left the salon. Why? Because the colours we added complemented the haircut, as well as her image and age group.

It doesn’t have to be anything outlandish, or over the top, to make sure you have the hair that everyone talks about. It just has to combine with your whole look. I never put on a colour just to block out the natural colour. It has to blend with how nature intended you to be eyebrows, skin tone and eye colour, for instance. There’s so much more to hair-colouring than grabbing a tube and hoping for the best. Consult your stylist for an in-depth consultation, making sure you receive all the information about your new colour, before going ahead. Colouring your hair shouldn’t be a chore. It should be your “pick me up”, when things start to get a little tired, hairwise.

COLOUR HAS NO AGE By Carl Pattison WHEN do you stop bothering with fashion? At what age do you give up, and start to dress top-to-toe in beige, to “blend in” with the crowd? Many of the more-mature generation tend to think they are no longer important, and that no one will take an interest in what they are wearing. Being a stylist, I tend to incorporate hairdressing into fashion. For me, it has to achieve a total look. Women tell me they tend to “skip” fashionable clothing, and opt for something that just covers them up. I don’t believe for one moment that any woman should strive to look

like a model once she has reached her fifties. But there is still so much that can be found to flatter you, which makes you have the glow that “DRESSINGUP” can bring. Find out what colour schemes work for your hair and skin tone, and try on something a little more daring and, shall I say, “youthful”. It’s not a case of trying to look 20 years younger, but all about looking the best for your years. Blending in with the crowd is fine, if that’s how you feel. For those of you who may, sometimes, still want to be fashionable, the clothing is out there - believe me. It’s a matter of finding a store which fits your

idea of what’s stylish for you. This doesn’t mean staying out of moreyouthful stores, either. If you still have the urge, the world’s your oyster. Just stay away from “beige”, and open up a world of colours again. Yes, this still can be done - even at “your” age!

THE 1st Los Cristianos Rainbows, Brownies and Guides were back in Iceland’s Las Chafiras store last Saturday, helping shoppers pack their bags. This time they were armed with cakes - their own, home-made varieties, which they sold to willing customers to raise charity funds. And they went down a storm! The cafe area outside was filled with people, all joining in the tombola and the “guess-howmany-sweets-inthe-pot” game. A grand total of 477.01 euros was raised to complete an absolutely brilliant

morning, so a big thankyou to all the girls and everybody who came along. Thanks also to the ladies who helped the girls, and to Iceland for welcoming the youngsters back. Half the total raised will go towards a local childen’s charity, yet to be decided.

Magnificent Mike really pulls it off! THE Swallows’ Drama Group has staged another annual winner with Daisy Pulls It Off, at the Hotel Tryp (Princesa Dacil) in Los Cristianos. Up stepped Mike, complete with school-

It was tremendous fun and Carole Hart (pictured with Mike), who runs the Swallows, said: “He was so fab, stepping in the way he did to save the night.” Thanks to the hard work of Mike, all the cast and background staff, the production attracted a full house for all three days, raising a fantastic 2,814 euros for the Swallows’ Cancer Research charity.

Cleopatra, Queen of Cats WE are looking to find a home for a wonderful tabby-and-white female we’ve called Cleopatra. She was found wandering the streets, bewildered and alone. But she’s really friendly, so she’s obviously been someone’s pet at some stage. Cleopatra has now been spayed, and given a microchip, together with her first year’s injections. She is young and very loving, and would make a perfect companion. All cats go on a week’s trial, so you can make sure they settle in before you make a commitment. No adoption fee is required. If you would like to ask questions or meet her, Whatsapp Theresa on 680 475 500 (9am-6pm, seven days a week). Details and pictures of all the cats we have for adoption can be found on our website www. cats-welfare -tenerife. com/pets Temporary foster carers Do you live here permanently? Maybe you are here for just a few months, or weeks even. Did you know that you can be a foster carer for us? We constantly need people who are prepared to take in a cat, or kitten, short-term, until we find them a permanent home. We provide all food, litter and veterinary care. You provide the cuddles! It’s an ideal way to have a pet, with none of the long-term responsibility - or cost. If you would like to find out more, or talk to an existing foster carer about their experiences, please contact us via our web page, or call Theresa on the above number. Heartfelt thanks A huge thank-you to Purina, and the Atlantic Dog pet shop in Las Galletas. Together, they

have made a wonderful donation of food, to help us feed the cats in our care. Both companies do a tremendous amount of charity work, and, on behalf of all the hungry kitties, we can’t thank them enough. We receive no Government funding, so every donation makes such a a difference to the number of cats and kittens we can help. Your donations Why not join our group of “Teamers”? Just one euro a month will be donated from your des-

ignated account. We are hoping this small sum will attract people who may not be in a position to give more, but who still want to help our cause. It’s secure and simple to enlist, and takes just a couple of minutes. It gives us a regular income, which means we can plan, more effectively, the work to which we can commit month. Check out http://teaming.net/catswelfaretenerife if you’re interested. Something to give? We always require old towels and blankets as

bedding for the cats and kittens. We also need pet-carriers, pet-beds, scratch-posts, etc. (in good condition please), plus donations of goodcondition/quality clothes for our charity shop. If you have anything to donate, including as-new furniture and household effects, ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection. Our shop is on San Blas, Golf del Sur, behind HiperDino. We are open from 10am-6pm, except Saturdays (11am-4pm). Do pop in. There’s lots to see.

Gaffers’ slight hiccup

THE final month of matches in the Direct Telecom Pool League has arrived, and we’re now at the business end of the season.

Gaffers A are making the running in Division One, but this week they were pegged back by Treehouse A on a night when both teams produced high-quality pool. They traded frames like boxers trade punches, but neither team could make the breakthrough and, at the end, both sides were happy with a point. Gaffers now just need four points from their remaining four games to be crowned champions. But Tenerife Hammers A, who met The Phoenix in Los Abrigos, are not giving up the chase and raced into a 3-1 lead, despite being without Nurse Paul! The second session was a lot closer, with Phoenix getting back into it by sharing the four frames. But

Hammers moved up a gear and took the first two frames of the deciding session to clinch victory, which moved them back into second spot, just five points behind the leaders. After a slow start to the season, Rewind A were looking to finish as high as possible. They faced a Silencio trip to play Exiles A, with both teams level on points. Exiles are difficult to beat at home, but the honours were squared after the first four games However, Exiles A then found their rhythm and went 5-3 ahead. This soon became 6-3 before Rewind’s John hit back. But Blair and Tel took their games, and the win, to round off a good team performance, with all the players chipping in with frames. At the bottom of the table, Terrace Bantams secured their place in Division One next season with a hard-fought win against Phoenix Potters. There was nothing to separate them over the first few frames, and it looked like be-

ing the same in the second session until birthday-boy Sparky missed an easy red. This allowed Pod to roll in the black to put Potters 5-3 up. The home side haven’t won since December, and they were staring down the barrel of another defeat ... until the balls started to roll for them, with Mal, Marky P and Con giving them a shock 6-5 lead. That left Adi playing for a Bantams’ win, and Eric looking to get the draw for Potters in the decider. The frame was cagey, with both players opting to play safety-first to begin with. But the game opened up, and when Adi rattled his penultimate yellow, Eric was left with a fine cut on the

black. His shot looked in all the way, but it lacked pace and rolled to a stop on the edge of the pocket. Adi didn’t need a second invitation, clearing his remaining colours and rolling in the black for a well-earned win. Tenerife Hammers C look destined for life in Division Two after another loss. But they gave it a real good go and were unlucky not to take a point against Gaffers B. The home side stormed into a 4-1 lead before losing five on the bounce, only for Tony Macaroni to beat Wilson to put Gaffers 6-5 ahead. Ken was up against Nathan, trying to nick the draw, but it wasn’t to be as the Gaffers’ man dragged them over the line. In Division Two, with

two of the top three inactive, the chasing pack had a chance to narrow the gap, and Bluebell B took full advantage after playing two games in as many nights. They started at home on Monday against Hoppys B and, despite some resistance from their visitors, they enjoyed a comfortable 9-3 win. On Tuesday, they travelled to Valle San Lorenzo to meet Tenerife Pool Tables, who have been in fine form. But Bluebell were on a roll and soon got into the groove, picking frames off. And after producing some excellent pool they recorded their second successive 9-3 success. Hoppys A, who welcomed second-placed Crown B on Monday, gave a good account of themselves over the first few frames. But the Crown boys are all seasoned league players, and never looked back after forging a lead to move to within two points of the league leaders. Crown B have three games in hand, tho-

ugh, so the title is still very much in their hands. Splash Bar got back to winning ways with a success at Hoppys B. The home side took the first frame, but Splash roared back to take the next four. Hoppys rallied and took the next, only for Splash to repeat their earlier performance with another four on the bounce to take the points. After Monday’s league win, Crown B were back in action on Tuesday in the Tenerife Pool Tables Plate quarter-final against Dreamers A. The Division Two side were looking to take a Division One scalp, but it was a night they will want to forget. Steve struck first for Dreamers and Joel levelled. But the Crown’s wheels then came off as Dreamers rattled off nine frames in a row to leave the home side shell-shocked and out of the competition. Dreamers, who progress to the semi-finals, look as though they’ll be tough opposition to beat.

Oasis Fm Fantasy League

Frank still points the way PREMIER League matches are starting to be ticked off as we approach the final stages of the run-in. But we still don’t have a clear picture of who will finish where. It’s slightly different in the Oasis Fm Fantasy League because we have a clear frontrunner, although it is certainly by no means over. Leicester continued their good run at the top, Swansea put distance between themselves and the relegation zone and Man

City put on a good second half show against struggling Aston Villa. And, as a result of this, all three teams contributed two players apiece into the point-scoring team of the week. The rest came from Arsenal, Southampton, Bournemouth, West Ham and Stoke, with King from Bournemouth and Payet from West Ham top scorers with 13 points. In the Oasis Fm Fantasy League, top spot is still held by Frank Devaney, who has an impressive 1,661-point

total. Frank now leads the chasing pack by 57 points and, while that advantage is not insurmountable, it will take a big collapse for him to be caught. He just needs his top players to stay fit and in among the points. Behind him, there is a real bun-fight taking place as managers and teams jostle for position within the top10. There is a gap of just 64 points separating second spot going down to 10th. So there really is everything

still left to play for, especially if you use the point-boosts correctly because you can score an impressive total and soon make ground on your rivals. Warren Wilson did just that as he used the triple captain boost and, as a result, had the team of the week with 104 points. His captain was Sergio Aguero who, with the boost in place, scored 33 points. He also had Payet with 13 points and Mahrez with 11 points, with the rest of his team averag-

ing 7-8 points each. So with that in mind, choose your team and

your boost careful, and you can quickly make up space.

Just Pas the Cup over! LAST Friday’s Team Handicap finals produced plenty of nailbiting drama … and saw a few betting slips thrown in the bin, including mine! Gaffers were strong favourites going into the Trophy showdown with Los Abrigos outfit Pas O Nadas A, who had a 48-point advantage only. The Gaffers gang drew first blood, with Matt beating Andy, but Nadas were having none of it. The League’s youngest captain, Beck, levelled the tie by taking out Neil, followed by Steve Sub’s 2-0 win over Tel. Gaffers’ Tom squared things up by taking a point from Walter, but a

crucial fifth singles leg was won by the Nadas’ Wattie who rolled back the years to beat Mike Telf 2-1. On to the doubles, and Pas O Nadas’ pairing of Steve Sub and Wattie

held their nerve to hold off any fightback by Gaffers to claim their first-ever John Lowe Team Handicap Trophy. Suffice to say that even Beck celebrated with a Fanta orange!

The Plate final, between Hoppys Bar and Emerald Shamrocks, followed a similar pattern, although it was all over before the doubles. Jamie beat Grizzly

to claim the first rubber for Shamrocks, but that was it for the San Blas team as Hoppys slotted home the next four games to see them lift their first John Lowe Plate. Griz-

zly would, of course, like to thank his teammates for carrying him throughout the evening! Many thanks to The Crown and Ourplace for hosting the finals, and congratulations to all involved for the fine sportsmanship displayed. Great stuff! So that brings us to the Memorial Trophy charity singles knockout at Nauta Bar tonight (Friday). The three finals stemming from this event will be played on stage at our Presentation Night, which gives all players the chance of a bit of glory under the bright lights. See you there!

Not-so-mellow yellow CD Tenerife 0 Almeria 0

By Roscoe SOMETIMES, you can sum up a match in one sentence. There were more yellow cards than shots on goal. Guillermo Cuadra is one of those referees who thinks the game revolves around him.

He showed 10 yellow cards, and even managed to give the red one an airing for the luckless Raul Camara. Cuadra showed 11 the last time he was in charge of Almeria, and he has now dished out his yellow card 34 times in four matches. But this poor match wasn’t totally down to Cuadra the clown. Both sides seemed happy to

keep a clean sheet and grab a point, almost from the outset. Almeria showed that they will soon be out of the relegation zone now that Nestor Garosito has got them organised. On reflection, it was a perfectly acceptable point for Tenerife, and a glance at the table shows that a play-off place is still a realistic target. And we will know a bit more about that chance after this weekend’s visit to surprise leaders Leganes. They are a small, municipal team, with a stadium that barely holds 8,000. Yet they are on a brilliant run. They have won their last four matches and have gone a calendar year without losing at home. Yes, Leganes are almost the Leicester of this division! The side comprise grizzled old veterans and discarded youngsters. Defender Pablo Insua played a dozen games in La Liga for Depor-

tivo last season, but he was left on the shelf until a late call from Leganes. Then there are the journeymen who are busting a gut to make the top flight, finally. Players such as Sastre, Mantovani and Lazaro, and you can also throw in Alexander Szymanowski, the Argie with the Polish name who is playing like Messi. And, finally, there is the Tenerife connection. Both Omar Ramos and Albizua could be playing against the hosts. Omar has flirted with a return to Tenerife for a few years, while Albizua was a solidenough centre-back last season. Asier Garitano, who has been in charge for nearly three years, has molded a team who are easy on the eye. All neutrals would love for them to do an Eibar and get into La Liga. However, in some ways the cat is out of the bag.

To these eyes, they are pretty much a Plan A team. Tenerife should set up 4-4-2. And if Position

they go there with a bit of luck, they are more than capable of flying home with some points. Points

Can Reading upset Palace?

WE have a mixed bag this week with the FA Cup quarter-finals and a sprinkling of Premier League games, so there is certainly something for everyone.

FA CUP QUARTER-FINALS Reading (CH) v Crystal Palace (PL)

Neither of these teams have won the Cup before, but Palace appeared in the 1990 Final and have reached the semis on two other occasions, most recently in 1995. Reading also have two semi-final appearances to their name, the second coming last season - 88 years after their only other last-four experience. But the sides have had three previous Cup meetings, twice in the early Thirties and again 20 years later, in the 1952-83 season. All three games ended in draws, with Palace eventually going through after winning all three replays. With Reading the only Championship club remaining, it has been 10 years since the quarter-finals were an all-Premier League affair. My Prediction: Home win

PREMIER LEAGUE Norwich v Man City

Norwich, who have slipped backwards at an alarming rate, find themselves in the bottom three after taking just four points from their last 10 games. Some are calling it the curse of new chairman Ed Balls! They have the second-worst defence in the League, and City will look to exploit the leaks. But City have not been in the best form after suffering three consecutive defeats, and last week’s win over bottom club Villa was merely papering over the cracks. A win at Norwich could open up a four-point cushion and a chance to put daylight between themselves and their rivals for a top-four finish. Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A

Bournemouth v Swansea

The Cherries have had two wins in a row, which should secure their Premier League status because it moved them 11 points clear of the relegation zone. They have been unlucky with injuries this season, and it will be interesting to see how they cope next season with experience under their belts. If they can take these points, they can start to relax. Swansea gave themselves a massive boost by beating Norwich last weekend, which was a big step closer to safety. They are another team who have picked up a couple of wins just at the right time. They now need to channel the confidence from this clash and continue to perform well. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A

Stoke v Southampton

Everton (PL) v Chelsea (PL)

This clash is the only repeat FA Cup Final in this season’s last eight. They met in the 2009 Final, which Chelsea won 2-1. Over the course of the Cup, the clubs have met nine times. Chelsea have the upper hand with six victories, compared with just three for Everton. The Liverpool club are making a record 45th appearance in the quarterfinals, while Chelsea are contesting their 34th. However, it is also Chelsea’s 11th quarter-final appearance of this 21st century, which is a record itself. But with new investment in place, Everton will be looking to impress. Prediction: Away win

Arsenal (PL) v Watford (PL)

The Gunners are still on track for a third consecutive FA Cup triumph, a feat last achieved by Blackburn Rovers 130 years ago. And in this day and age, it would probably be hailed as an even greater success. The clubs have met five times in the past, with Arsenal boasting four wins, two of which came while they were still playing as Woolwich Arsenal. Watford have yet to win an FA Cup, making just one final appearance in their 108 seasons when losing 2-0 against Everton in 1984. Arsenal, on the other hand, are current record-holders with 12 FA Cup wins. Prediction: Home win

Man Utd (PL) v West Ham (PL)

This has the makings of a really good FA Cup tie because there is little to separate the clubs when it comes to current league position. But on current form, West Ham are probably slight favourites. They have faced each other eight times before in the Cup, Hammers winning the first two. Since then, however, Man Utd have won five with only one more in reply. This will be United’s eighth quarter-final appearance since last winning the trophy in 2004, while in the same period, West Ham have made just three appearances at this stage. Home advantage should favour United, but they will need to put in a better performance than they have been producing recently. Prediction: Away win

If Stoke can continue their decent run, they could move up to seventh. And if they hadn’t hit an inconsistent patch, they might really be challenging for a European spot. Ten points from the last four games has seen confidence flow through the team, who will be relishing this home fixture. Southampton have won of their last 10 games, but they’ve been off-form in the last three. Just when we thought they’d built up a head of steam, they slipped to ninth. They need to regroup and get back to winning ways - and Stoke away from home is not a bad place to start! Prediction: Draw Last season: 2-1

Aston Villa v Spurs

Villa are playing like a team already relegated. And if it weren’t for the teams above them who also keep losing, they would have been down by now. They are nine points from safety with nine games to play. So, while the great escape is still mathematically possible, their fans will harbour a glimmer of hope ... although that glimmer is fading fast. Spurs need to keep the pressure on Leicester, so victory is vital. They have looked tired in recent games, and a midweek Europa League match against tough opposition will not have helped. But Villa are the one team in those circumstances you’d want to face. Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-2

Leicester v Newcastle

The Leicester bandwagon continues to roll, and what a difference a year makes because last March, they were seven points adrift of safety! Dependent on results elsewhere, their lead may be down to just two points going into this game, so they will know how important the outcome is. But the Gods seemed to have deemed it their year! Newcastle need a big result to restore confidence, and they don’t come much bigger than the league leaders. But it is going to be a tough task. They need to come out fighting, but with caution because Leicester are quick on the counter-attack. If the Magpies could score an early goal, it might be enough to unsettle their opponents. Prediction: Home win Last season: 3-0
