The passion of The Passion

Continued from front. It will be staged along the town’s Calle Grande, reliving the last days and death of Jesus of Nazareth. The event will be broadcast live on Television Canarias, and will also be available live via TVCanariaNet on the internet. National TV will also show highlights. The revered event begins at noon at the Plaza Cruz del Llano (opposite the entrance to Adeje town primary school), and moves up the Calle Grande. The extravaganza spans two hours and last year, 15,000 people enjoyed the telling. “Every year, there is a incredible sense of anticipation around this event,” said Cllr Alonso. “Over 300 people take part, but none of this would be possible without the dedication and work of the team based in the Town Hall. They make this event so special - down to the last detail - checking every stage, every costume …” This is the fourth year that the final part of the staging, the Crucifixion,

is in the Plaza de España. The natural backdrop of the Barranco del Infierno, the Santa Úrsula church and the Convento create the perfect setting. For the first time, the two thieves crucified alongside Jesus Christ will also be present. It is a fitting finale. Adolfo Alonso added: “The staging of The Passion and Death of Jesus Christ is hugely relevant for the people of Adeje. The people of the town really feel that this is their event, and they are proud of the staging, and proud to take part. It is something unique.” Many associations, sports clubs and businesses also take part every year. Other changes this year will include an improved stage for the scene with Herod. All the music is the composition of the Adeje School of Music members, and the arrangement uses many traditional Canarian instruments, including the timple, cháracas and drums.

The whole of the Calle Grande, from the Plaza de la Cruz del Llano to the Plaza España, will be a stage, dressed to resemble the time of Our Lord, with plants, cloths, sculptures and altars, live markets with animals, etc. During and afterwards, for those following the event, they can upload their photographs and videos to #pasionadeje2016, which give the event greater visibility. Adeje Council also reminds those who are planning to attend the event to wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and to bring water and a sun-hat. Adequate suncream should be applied, with children being wellprotected. Do follow the instructions of the local police and civil protection units, who are there to ensure everyone’s safety. And don’t cross the temporary barriers, erected to keep the streets clear for the act itself. The staging begins with the entrance of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

The town is recreated on the Calle Grande with a market typical of the era, complete with food, animals (goats, horses), plus falcons, snakes and doves. The crowd are invited to join in the chorus of Hosanna, as Jesus enters. The focus then shifts to The Last Supper in the plaza Cruz del Llano, followed by a meeting of Jesus with Mary Magdalene. The scene in the Garden of Gethsemane sees the kiss from Judas, who, racked with the guilt of having betrayed Our Lord, subsequently takes his own life. The Passion then switches to Pontius Pilate and Claudia, and to the palace of Herod and Herodias. On the return of Jesus to Pontius Pilate, the audience witness the meeting between Jesus and St John, and experiences the suffering of Christ, and the unconditional love of the Apostle for his Lord. Jesus is whipped and beaten, and begins the

walk to Calvary, with the slope of the Calle Grande in Adeje - towards the Plaza España - lending to the realistic imagery. The audience then sees a bloodied Jesus Christ, wearing his crown of thorns - in pain - stumbling and suffering on his way to be crucified. His mother, The Virgin Mary, accompanies him, offering words of comfort. He meets Verónica, who cleans his face with a cloth. Jesus continues on his cross-bearing way, visibly weakening, until he arrives at the Plaza. The Crucifixion is then observed by the crowd, as Jesus feels the pain of the nails being driven into his hands. After his death, The Virgin Mary gives a heartfelt, emotive speech on the passing of her only son. A final procession takes place, with the fallen Christ brought to the Church of Santa Ursula Martír. This stunning event follows a series of extremely-well-attended celebrations. Last Monday´s pro-

cession of the Captured Christ and Our Lady of Hope, snaked through the streets of Adeje. Friday of Sorrows at Tijoco-La Hoya, Fañabé, and the church of Santa Úrsula, in Adeje town centre, were crammed to capacity, and the Way of the Cross procession of Saturday was just as wellattended. Last weekend, the Palm-Sunday procession, from Armeñime to Fañabe, was mirrored by Tuesday’s procession of the meeting of Jesus of Nazareth and his Blessed Mother. As well as the Passion Play, this weekend sees the Easter Vigil tomorrow (Easter Saturday) in a number of churches - San José in Los Olivos and Santa Úrsula church in Adeje town, where there will also be a procession and public blessing with the Sacred Sacrament. Easter Sunday Masses will be held in Armeñime, Arona, Adeje town, Callao Salvaje, Fañabé, Tijoco-La Hoya and San Sebastián in La Caleta.

TERRORISTS

WILL NOT WIN

A minutes silence in Arona led by Mayor Mena

BELGIUM’S capital city of Brussels has been in a state of shock following terrorist bomb explosions at Zaventem airport and at the downtown underground train (metro) stop, which killed at least 31 people and wounded many others on Tuesday.

Unharmed travellers fled both sites in sheer panic as people, dead or injured, littered the ground, and Belgium has since raised its terrorism alert to the highest level. The so-called Islamic State (Isis), which carried out last year’s Paris attacks, also claimed responsibility for the blasts, which came days after terrorism police raided an apartment in the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek last Friday. They arrested Salah

Abdeslam, main suspect in the Paris attacks who had been on the run for four months, and two other suspects. There is a firm link to Paris because several of those attackers actually lived in the Molenbeek neighbourhood, where police have carried out regular raids in the aftermath of the assaults. Two of the suicide bombers who carried out the Brussels attacks, captured on the airport’s CTTV cameras, were brothers Brahim and Khalid elBakraoui. Federal Prosecutor Frederic van Leeuw said Brahim was part of the airport attack, which killed 11 people. And Khalid struck at the Maelbeek metro, where 20 people died. In addition, 260 people were injured. Mr van Leeuw said the brothers, both Belgian nationals and identified by DNA records, were known to police and had criminal records, albeit totally unrelated to terrorism. He said Brahim had left a note saying that people were looking for

him everywhere, and that if he gave himself up he would end up in a cell. The RBTF broadcaster, quoting a police source, said that 27-year-old Khalid had used a false name to rent a flat in the Forest area of Brussels, where police killed a gunman in a shoot-out last week. It was during that raid that police found a fingerprint of Abdeslam. He was arrested in a raid in Brussels last Friday after being shot in a leg, and was set to appear before a pre-trial court on Wednesday. During his arrest, he promised there would be other attacks. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, welcoming French counterpart Manuel Valls to Brussels on Wednesday, insisted: “Europe’s destiny is peace and security.” He added: “We are more determined than ever to act in the face of enemies of democracy.” The Underground bomb nearly claimed the life of 32-year-old, Tenerife-born Jorge Cólogan, who was trav-

elling in the first car of the metro when the explosion occurred, at Maalbeek Station. Mr Cólogan, who said he was fortunate to have escaped unharmed, moved to Brussels just one month ago, and was on his way to work when the bomb went off. He saw a large, dense, cloud of white smoke, and the people who were around with him fell to the ground. “I felt a cold, cold sweat, and my only emotion was that I was afraid that another explosion could occur,” he added. Mariano Rajoy, Spain’s acting Prime Minister, insists the Brussels’ explosions were “an attack against us all, against our way of life and our understanding of life.” Rajoy expressed his solidarity with the people of

Belgium, “the capital of Europe”, saying: “Each time terrorism strikes, it strikes us all. These attacks are not all that different from what happened on that dreadful 11th March 2004 date in Madrid.” Rajoy told a press conference that terrorism must be fought “with great perseverance

and great determination, with great courage, without letting our guard down. and with all available resources.” He added: “We also need political unity. Complete unity, both within countries on a domestic level and solidarity between countries on an international level. Counter-terrorism collaboration is strong in Europe, although it is clear that we are never safe from events such as this taking place.” On Wednesday, many countries observed a minute’s silence. There were events all over Tenerife as well. Many Town Halls fell silent and there was a public silence from the Mayors of Adeje and Arona.

The no-nonsense consumer office ADEJE consumers’ office has helped recover over 140,000 euros for complainants, who have delivered more than enough grumbles to keep the service busy over the years.

Some of the main complaints are about mobile-phone service providers, banks, garages and airlines. Adeje’s OMIC (Oficina Municipal de Información al Consumo), the office which deals with consumer complaints on behalf of the

public, has handled over 20,000 during its 25-year existence. Releasing details on World Consumer Rights Day, Adeje Health Promotion Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, along with her the technical team, said: “We have overseen a number of campaigns in the office’s 25 years, and we have offset many more, having helped create responsible and well-informed consumers.” Among the main objectives of the consumers’ office are educating consumers about their rights, and helping them shop sensibly. The basic advice to consumers include reading all the small

print before buying, consulting all of the conditions when purchasing or engaging services, and comparing product prices and services across the market. At the end of 2015, the office had registered 1,046 complaints or petitions, a slight drop on the 2014 figures of 1,127. The most frequent complaints deal with mobile phones (29%) landlines (9.85%), banks (4.78%), garages (3.8%), electro-domestic traders (5.83%), airlines (4%) and basic services (4.4%). Councillor Bencomo said: “Recently, we are also being asked to help people who find themselves on a debtor’s list

Our combined culture cause

CULTURAL Councillors from Tenerife South town halls have met to discuss how co-ordinating their resources could benefit all their residents. The Councils have created a working group with representatives from Adeje, Arafo, Arona, Fasnia, Granadilla, Guía de Isora, Güímar, San Miguel de Abona, Santiago

del Teide and Vilaflor. They plan to meet every two months to see how they can best-strengthen their cultural offers across the region. The members are looking, in particular, at film showings, theatrical shows and other events which, with collaboration, will benefit the public in each borough. The idea is still evolv-

ing, but, says Adeje Council representative Adolfo Alonso Ferrera: “Together, we can all be stronger in this area, and we can establish lines of mutual help, with the aim of benefiting everyone in the South.” One of the first items on the agenda will be to draw up security plans under a general Public Events law.

and need to know what their rights are, because there is a lack of information about this.” Almost half the cases taken up by the office have ended positively for the consumer, with the office reclaiming over 140,000 euros, and

helping others avoid unnecessary payments. The Adeje office, as well as offering consumers information and helping them deal directly with specific cases, is working to educate and train, collaborate with other public

and private bodies dedicated to the protection of consumer rights, appeal complaints to the consumer rights’ courts if an agreement cannot be reached locally, and, in general work, to protect the borough’s citizens.

French strikes anger airlines

BUDGET airlines Ryanair and Easyjet have urged governments and the European Commission to take action over a strike by French air-traffic controllers, which affected Sunday and Monday flights.

Hundreds of passengers, flying with Ryanair, Easyjet and British Airways, faced flight cancellations because of the strike, in protest at planned staff cuts.

Ryanair was forced to cancel some 200 flights, while Easyjet wrote off 145 flights for Monday. The strike was called by UNSA-ICNA, the third-largest French union for air-traffic controllers. It maintains the staff cuts are unrealistic because to the “operational needs of control centres”. The union, which said air traffic would grow, criticised the French Civil Aviation Authority for being too slow to invest in new technology. Ryanair and Easyjet are two of the five founding members of the newly-formed “Air-

Rise in local dole figures FOREIGNERS in the Canaries’ Social Security system numbered 81,935 in February, which meant a 6.12% year-on-year growth.

In the country as a whole, Social Security saw 11,859 more for-

eign contributors on the dole in February, which was a slight rise on January. Officially, the total number at the end of February was 1,612,68. Annually, the number of foreign affiliates increased by 84,311, representing 5.52% more than February 2015, which was the biggest growth since 2008.

lines for Europe” lobby group. The others are Air France KLM, International Airlines Group and Lufthansa. Easyjet said the group was working with the other carriers “to call on governments and the EU to develop an action plan to minimise the impact of air-traffic control strikes on passengers”. Robin Kiely, Ryanair head of communications, said: “It’s grossly unfair that thousands of ordinary European consumers have their travel and holiday plans disrupted by the actions of a selfish few.” The airliner, which has been the most outspoken of the carriers, repeated its demand that the European Commission ban airtraffic controllers from striking to prevent passengers “being held to ransom”. Ryanair said the strike was not only affecting travellers going to and from France, but also those flying through French air space. And it wants other air-traffic controllers in Europe to be allowed to manage flights over French airspace during such action. The airline has also

urged consumers to sign its “Keep Europe’s Skies Open” petition to the European Commission. When it has obtained one million signatures, Ryanair plans to present it to the EU Commission and the EU Parliament. Passengers travelling from Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton Airport were forced to wait for, or reschedule, their flights because of the action. The DGAC, France’s Civil Aviation Authority, said it had requested one-third of flights be cancelled to and from Paris-Orly and other regional airports on Monday. Air France warned of last-minute cancellations and delays, but said it planned to operate its long-haul services, and all flights to and from Paris Charles de Gaulle, which was unaffected. British Airways, which used larger aircraft where possible, refused to disclose how many flights would be affected by the strike, but a spokesperson said: “We are doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers affected.”

Adoptions from abroad have slowed right down FOR years, the Canary Islands has been a Spanish leader in international adoptions, helping children from overseas find new families. But that is changing. The number of overseas children being adopted in 2015 was the lowest since 1998, with just 25 adoptions being formalised throughout the archipelago. This highlights the effect of the financial crisis on a phenomenon that enjoyed its “golden age” in the first decade of the century. In fact, between 2000 and 2009, the number of adoptions was 1,267. In addition, historical data provided by the Government reveals that between 1998 and 2015, Canarian families adopted 1,801 children of various nationalities. And the most significant in these “boom” years was 2005, with 202 children. The cost of international adoptions, coupled with the enormous economic difficulties

experienced by the islands’ society, explains this behaviour, which is not unique to this region. The outlay varies considerably from one country to another, but experts estimate that, on average, the cost of adopting an overseas’ child can be up to 20,000 euros. In addition to the investment involved in the processing and travel to the country of origin, parents also encounter numerous obstacles by the laws in home countries. China and Russia have, traditionally, been the “sending” countries. Since 1998, some 1,058 minors have reached the Canary Islands from these two countries, 857 being born in China and 201 in Russia. Ethiopia stood at third with 110. In 2015, despite the fall in adoption numbers, the Asian giant again led the ranking, with Canarian families welcoming nine Chinese children.

Spain’s in danger of anti-doping penalty SPAIN failed to meet last Friday’s deadline to comply with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations because, as yet, there is not yet a new government in place.

The country’s antidoping agency codes are enshrined in law, so regulation changes must be made through parliament. Spain, Belgium, Brazil, France, Greece and Mexico were given the extended deadline in November, to comply with the new WADA date of 18th March. Brazil enacted a presidential decree last Thursday, to meet WADA’s requirements. In November, WADA declared Israel, Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Russia and Ukraine to be noncompliant. Israel and Argentina have since been removed from the list, after

meeting the requirements. WADA’s deadline ended at midnight last Friday. Countries declared non-compliant can lose accreditation for their testing laboratories, and be at risk of being banned from hosting major events – and even competing in the Olympics. Spain passed new anti-doping laws in 2013, which were rendered outdated after WADA changed its code in 2015. Spain’s agency said that it has been in constant communication with WADA to explain the non-government situation, and hopes the agency will be lenient. Spanish officials say WADA is aware of the country’s commitment to adapt to the new world code, and that it has its hands tied because of the political impasse. Spain depends on its parliament because it does not rely on a private organisation to oversee the anti-doping regulations.

Rajoy welcomes Spain’s Guardia stars of future ACTING Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, has inaugurated Madrid’s new Guardia Civil Officers Academy in Aranjuez.

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Enough SO now we can add Brussels to the list of cities which have suffered at the hands of these terrorists who are trying to prove … what exactly?

Seriously, I swear I slept through most of my Religious Education classes at school. I was too busy trying to sell cola cubes or skittles at the back of the classroom. My parents have no interest in religion, and that has been soaked up by me. It’s one of the things I´m most proud of about them. Let me be clear (I’m sounding like a politician here), if you believe in a God, then fine. That´s up to you. Everyone has the right to believe in what he/she wants. But so do the non-believers. We have the right not to believe what believers, believe. And that is something often lost when the whole religious argument comes around. I have long held the view that most people do not know the difference between a Protestant and a Catholic.

Do you know the difference? What about Sikhism and Hinduism? Most religious wars are nothing more than a bigger version of the old playground argument: “My Dad’s gonna beat up your Dad.” “No, my Dad is going to beat up your Dad.” I´ve seriously had enough of it. All this pain and fear over something that no person can prove actually exists. NASA recently sent up another probe to try to find life on Mars. If the Space Agency hits the jackpot, then religion is done. Mind you, many feel that Darwin did that a couple of centuries ago. The most religious people I know are some of the kindest, honest and trustworthy humans you will ever meet. They find this almost alien humanity. Forgiveness. Tolerance. And maybe that is something we can focus on after the events of this week. Because something has to change, before we end up in the mother of all wars.

It offers, he said: “Comprehensive training similar to that received by the executives of any great organisation or institution, whether public or private”. Rajoy expressed his “gratitude and admiration for the service provided by the men and women” who make up the Spanish Guardia Civil, adding: “This institution is “highly-valued, highly-respected and highly-loved by the

people of Spain.” He stressed that the Guardia Civil values have remained unaltered through history because, besides adapting to changing times, “it has combined military and police training with great success. “Besides defending the law, its officers have shown how talent and skills are the best allies for dedication to service.” Regarding the new Academy, Rajoy said: “It represents another step in a vocation for excellence, and a modern future for the Guardia Civil. “Officers who study at this centre will not only be trained to extraordinarily high levels but this training - rec-

ognised within Spain and overseas - will be even higher because the Guardia Civil University Centre will also be located there.” Rajoy added: “This will involve diverse, comprehensive, modern and up-to-date training, compatible and comparable with that received by the executives and leaders of any great organisation or institution.” The goal, said Rajoy, was for “the young people studying here to make their dedication to the Spanish Guardia Civil compatible with the enrichment provided by the university world as it leads to other areas of knowledge, and to receive cuttingedge education”.

Finally, Rajoy reminded the new students before him that they were the genuine “stars” of the education centre, about to receive the extensive, technical and professional knowledge required by the leaders of a great security force like the Guardia Civil.” But he added: “Your greatest distinction will always lie in your loyal embodiment of the inherent values of the Spanish Guardia Civil. “Not only do we need trained and competent professionals, but we also need them to be committed to the idea of a service which has made the Guardia Civil a globally, one-of-akind institution.”

Congested roads still bunged up CABILDO President Carlos Alonso, who has this week been discussing the ongoing congestion on Tenerife roads, admits the new measures to reduce traffic jams on the North motorway (TF-5) have not met expectations.

“We still have no definitive data,” he said. “But the news is not as positive as we had thought or wanted. “Attracting passengers from the North, with reduced bus fares, has seen a rise of only onethird of what we expected.” Alonso added: “We must recognise that the measures regarding public transport have not had the expected impact, and we will have to try to encourage it another way. What we

have seen is that the use of buses is not down to the price.” The number of earlymorning passengers has increased between the North and the metropolitan area, but not by as much as expected. About 4,600 students live in the North, but just 6% of them use the Titsa service. The fare between any point

in the North and the metropolitan area was reduced to just 1.15 euros during the morning rush-hour, and between 5-8pm. After four months, the impact on the roads has been negligible, but Alonso is not giving up just yet. He insists that the collaboration with the University of La Laguna (ULL) is essential, to

try to reduce the morning jams on the TF-5 towards the metropolitan area. Efforts to reach an agreement with the ULL are still being made, and Alonso said: “We believe students hold the key, and that they will have a muchgreater impact - if we can find a way to get them on public transport at certain times.”

Chickenpox jab now available for babies

THE Canarian Government’s Ministry of Health has purchased 16,500 doses of the Chickenpox (varicella) vaccine for all babies born on or after 1st January 2015, after modifying the childhood vaccination schedule. The tiny tots will receive one dose of vaccine at 15 months, and a booster dose when they are three years old. This new measure, according to the regional Ministry of Health, fills the gap in the vaccination programme. It is already well-established in the Canary Islands that those who are 12 and have not had the disease will get another vaccination. The change to the childhood vaccination schedule, published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands this week, led to the MoH buying 16,500 doses of varicella vaccine at a cost of around 330,000 euros. Ricardo Redondas, Canarian Government Public Health General Director, says the Canaries is one of the first Spanish regions to introduce the Chickenpox vaccine for “the younger children, after advice from the national MoH”. He adds: “This measure has been incorporated into the vaccination schedule for babies, and we will also make it available in pharmacies for parents who wish to acquire it.”

The 17-year-old star from Adeje has now been crowned Tenerife’s Top Female Athlete by the Island’s sports’ journalists. Alexandra, twice Women’s World Body-Boarding champion - she is reigning title-holder - was joined on stage by men’s winner Sergio Rodríguez, the Real Madrid basketball player. Tenerife Sur’s UD Granadilla, who play in the Spanish First Division of women’s football, won Best Team award. It was a night of triumphs for Adeje sporting fans and followers, with local boxer Sandro Dominguez, current Spanish featherweight champion, also acknowledged. The votes come from members of the APDT, the Tenerife Association of Sports Journal-

baller and now with Chelsea, and Enrique Cruz. In the women’s category, Alexandra faced stiff competition against Beatríz Villamandos (a top deaf tennis player) and Olympic regatta athlete Alicia Cebrián. However the young Adeje woman triumphed in an emotional evening, with Cabildo Sport’s Councillor María del Cristo Pérez awarding her the coveted prize. Other prize-winners included footballer Vitolo, for his superb charity work; the Island basketball federation and sailor Airam Rodríguez. Well-known Spanish journalists Mayte Castro Óscar Herrera presided over the Gala and both Adeje Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso and the APDT President were congratulated for organising the event. Alonso, delighted to praise all the Tenerife sporting stars, was particularly pleased “because an Adeje athlete was voted No.1, Alexandra Rinder, and another had received special mention, Sandro Domínguez”.

traffic transported 2,780 tons - 2.8% below the same 2015 period. In the first two months of this year, 6.51 million passengers passed through Canary Island airports. That total was 12.1% more than in the same period last year, of which 1.87 million were on domestic flights.

In 2009, sales in the Canary Islands reached 30 million euros. Last year, that figure was reduced to 15 million. Six years ago, average individual spending on the games was 14.8 euros. In 2015, spending stood at just seven euros per person. The Business-School report includes pro-

jections, which point to a slight recovery in spending on this activity during 2016 and 2017, although this will fall again in 2019, to 12m euros. The study focused on the major world economies. In 2015, the Spanish video market decreased by 4%, compared with the previous year. There has been a cumulative 50% drop, compared with sales in 2009. Andalucia (55m euros), Cataluña (54m) Madrid (54m) and Valencia (34m) are the Spanish regions with higher, total spending. The Canaries (15m euros) is in sixth place.

after No asylum-seekers’ Pay-out huge balls-up expulsions says PM THE Advisory Council has partially-granted the financial claim of a young man, who lost a testicle in a medical botch.

MARIANO Rajoy outlined agreements reached following the first work session of the European Council in Brussels last Friday.

Two major issues discussed by the European leaders were the EU economic policy and the migrant crisis. Rajoy, acting Spanish Prime Minister, said of the migrant crisis that the EU agreed to support Greece. He added that, following a request from FRONTEX, Spain would dispatch civil servants to Greece to provide assistance in the refugee crisis because “we have people who are highly-specialised in these issues”. He said that “great importance” was given at the meeting to the readmission agreements “because they are essential to an ordered, sensible and reasonable immigration policy”. And regarding the agreement with Turkey, Mariano Rajoy said that, as yet, “no deal has been finalised”. However, he explained that the position he defended while talking with the European leaders was the one unanimously approved by the Spanish Parliament and requires “any decision that may be reached to comply with international law”. Rajoy also highlighted “the importance of defending the right to asylum,” adding: “This right should not be weakened in any way. There should be no mass expulsions of people from the Greek islands to any other country.” He believes it is “essential that all asylum applications are processed individually because that is the only way to provide guarantees, and that is what international law requires”. Rajoy stressed: “Meeting requirements and following proce-

dures is a must, so that the final decision can be challenged.” Rajoy also said the EU economic policy was based on three pillars: progress in terms of fiscal consolidation; ongoing reform efforts, and maintaining investment.

The Juncker Plan was discussed at the meeting with regard to investment, which already has various projects “under way in various EU countries”. The acting PM said that besides talking about an energy un-

‘Let’s have a joint grip on Gibraltar’ A SPANISH minister believes his country could demand joint sovereignty of Gibraltar if Britain decides to leave the EU. The surprise move to revive a 2002 proposal which had been shelved - that would affect the 30,000 inhabitants, was outlined by acting Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo in a newspaper interview. The concept of both Britain and Spain laying claim to Gibraltar, locat-

ed off the southern tip of Spain, was put forward 14 years ago, when residents voted on whether or not they would give their approval. However, the results showed that the people confirmed, overwhelmingly, that they wanted to stay in the UK sovereignty. But with Britain holding a vote on whether it should remain in the European Union in June, Spain believes Gibraltar could still stay a part of the bloc.

ion and a single digital market, the European leaders also agreed to maintain efforts aimed at building an economic and monetary union - a topic on which the European Council will focus on exclusively in June.

He had been attempting to sue the Council for five years, and the Ministry of Health has now been ordered to pay him compensation of 57,400 euros. The story dates back to 2nd February 2011 when the young man, who must remain nameless, was rushed to the Specialised Urgency Care Centre of Arona (El Mojon hospital). He was suffering with pains in his right testicle. After a consultation with the attending physician, an abdominal radiography scan showed that the man was constipated. The next day, still in pain, he went to the paediatrician, who explored the affected area. Orchitis (inflam-

mation of the testis) was diagnosed. He was then referred to Candelaria hospital. It was discovered that he had a righttesticular torsion, or a twisting. He had an immediate operation, because he had suffered complete and irreversible necrosis (the death of most, or all, of the cells) of the right testicle. The testicle was removed, as well as the left one, to avoid future twists. The man sued after arguing that the ER doctor had not treated him properly, because he hadn’t examined the right testicle, and had focused on the abdomen. This omission led to a serious misdiagnosis, which delayed the treatment of testicular torsion, a condition which requires immediate attention. After years of the case dragging on, it was not until 5th November 2015 that the Health Ministry proposed a resolution.

Full for Easter

EASTER will see another tourist boom in Tenerife, with hotel and other outlets anticipating an average occupancy of 94%, according to a survey by Ashotel.

The Canaries’ hotel association also predict the South will enjoy an occupancy of 95%, which is 9% more than the same 2015 period. And a 92% average is expected in the

North - a 16% improvement. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz forecasts a near-5% increase on last Easter to 67%. Of the smaller islands, La Gomera expects an occupancy rate of 98% and La Palma should experience a 19% increase against last year’s figures. Ashotel says they should be 94% full. while El Hierro is estimated to reach 85%, although last-minute bookings could increase this figure. Ashotel believes the reason for these improved figures is because “tourists are

swarming here because other popular destinations are in a situation of social and political conflict. A prime example would be the Mediterranean and Egypt”. Despite these prospects, which also point to a bumper summer season, Ashotel manager Juan Pablo Gonzalez called for “the industry to work on improving our tourism products”. He added: “Right now, we live in good times and have up-todate facilities. Our destiny for the future is bright.”

E V E RYO N E wants to pay less tax, and some people are better than others at settling their bills on time. And, it seems, we are the flag-bearers for doing the right thing.

According to a new report, the Canaries is the Autonomous Region with the lowest debt, per person. At the end of 2015 we each owed 3,166 euros, compared with the 5,624-euro average, and Catalonia is the most indebted, with individuals each owing 9,626. Maybe those antiSpanish politicians are happy to keep the crown waiting for its money! Rosa Davila, the Canarian Government’s Finance Minister, said: “These figures certify the solvency of the Autonomous Community, while demonstrating that compliance with the objectives of budgetary stability and containment of debt are compatible with economic development.”

Not so taxing for us

The Canaries’ GDP (Gross Domestic Product) public debt totalled 15.7%, and Davila said: “Our GDP is highly valued,” which suggests that the Canaries devotes fewer resources than other governments to pay. The Finance Minister has ensured that, despite being the “worstfunded region” by the Spanish Government, the archipelago continues to fulfil the objectives of debt and deficit reduction.

She added: “This will continue to allow us to access financial markets on more favourable terms than other communities.” The regions most in debt, in relation to their GDP, are Cataluña, Valencia and Castilla-La Mancha. The archipelago’s total debt is 6.6bn euros, which is about 8.7bn less than the average of the autonomies. Catalonia, Valencia and Andalucia owe the highest amount.

13 dead in Spanish motorway disaster

A BRITISH student, injured in Sunday’s fatal coach crash in north-east Spain, described how, after suffering a painful injury, she crawled out from the wreckage.

Thirteen people died in the motorway crash near Tarragona: seven Italians, two Germans, one Romanian, one French, one Uzbek and an Austrian. And at least 30 people were injured. Catalan interior minis-

ter Jordi Jané said three injured people were in a critical condition. Most of the victims, who have not been named, were aged between 22 and 29 and were Erasmus exchange students. Tallulah Lyons, a 19-year-old student from Swindon who is studying in Barcelona on an exchange programme organised by Southampton University, told told the BBC after fracturing vertebrae: “I just remember waking up and people were on the floor. “I was trying to crawl out with friends - and

Retail trade’s annual boost THE Canaries’ retail trade turnover increased by 3.9% in January against the same month last year, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Overall, Spain saw retail sales rise 2%, making it 17 consecutive months of growth. Eliminating seasonal effects, retail trade turnover increased by 3.3%, year-on-year. Employment in the retail sector rose by 1.8% in January over the first month last year, meaning 21 consecutive months of increases. But there was some

bad news for the food producers as sales fell by 1.8% in January, year-on-year. Retail sales, not including service stations, grew 2% in January compared with last January, while year-onyear service stations’ sales fell by 2.7%. The retail trade turnover increased in all regions against the same month’s figures last year, except in the Basque Country, which remained unchanged. The biggest rallies were reported in the Canaries (9%) and the Baleares (7%), while the lowest were in La Rioja (3%) and Murcia (5%).

that’s when we realised some people were trapped. It took about two hours to get everyone out.” It is not known how many other British students were on board. A Foreign-Office spokesman said: “We are in contact with the relevant authorities in Spain, following the coach crash in Tarragona.” Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that two Irish students were injured in the crash. Emergency services confirmed that the students on the coach represented 19 nationalities: France, the Netherlands, Finland, Hungary, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, New Zealand, the UK, Italy, Peru, Bulgaria, Poland, Ireland, Palestine, Japan and Ukraine. Catalonia President Carles Puigdemont said identification had been difficult. The coach was one of a five-strong group returning to Barcelona after celebrating Valencia’s Fallas festivities. There were no passenger lists of who travelled on which coach. He declared two days of mourning. At about 6am on Sunday, the driver lost control near Amposta, Tarragona, on a stretch of motorway between Barcelona and Valencia. The vehicle crossed the central reservation, and collided with an oncoming car.

The coach driver, who was among the survivors, tested negative for drugs and alcohol. He had driven for the company, which chartered the bus, for 17 years, and had never been involved in an accident. He should have appeared before a judge on Monday, but his appearance was put off after he suffered a panic attack and was taken to hospital. The company owner’s son told Spain’s national radio station RNE that his father was driving another vehicle, in front of the coach that crashed. “All of a sudden, he stopped seeing it in his rear-view mirror,” said the son, named only as Raúl. “He stopped at the next service area and called the driver, but he didn’t pick up.” He said his father had asked passengers in his bus to call those in the other vehicle, which is when he heard of the accident. “The driver is in a state of shock, but he’s okay, physically,” he added. Occupants of the other coaches were unaware of the accident until they arrived in Barcelona. Dídac Ramírez, Rector of the University of Barcelona, travelled to the scene to help identify the victims, some of whom were not carrying identity documents. He said it was likely that most of the students were at his university, one of four establishments involved in organ-

ising the trip. The stretch of motorway where the incident occurred is notorious. Núria Ventura, Mayor of nearby Ulldecona, said: “This is an accident black-spot. There have been numerous accidents here.” Catalonia’s Jordi Jané added: “Everything points to human error being the cause of the accident, though it’s too early to say. There’s no reason to think there was a problem with the road itself.” The Erasmus programme provides foreign-exchange courses for students from European Union countries. About three million students have taken part in the study-abroad scheme since its inception, and Spain is one of the most-popular destinations. The University of Barcelona wrote in a Twitter statement: “The #UniBarcelona sends its condolences to the families and relatives of the victims of today’s bus accident. We remain at your disposal for any further needs.” Flags at the university were reportedly being flown at half-mast, as a sign of respect for the dead. Erasmus Student Network Barcelona, an organisation representing Erasmus students throughout the city, confirmed it had organised the trip, and that volunteers from its organisation were also on the coach.

The 20-euro trip had set off for Valencia on Saturday morning, and participants were told to expect “the best show of fireworks, smoke and noise you’ve ever seen” throughout the day and evening. A slogan on the website reads: “Study hard, party harder.” Adverts for the trip suggested that the journey home could be spent sleeping, as the meet-up time for the return journey was 3.30am. The estimated arrival time in Barcelona had been 8am. A statement said: “ESN Barcelona would like to convey our condolences and join the pain of the families, friends and relatives of the victims. We feel the deep loss. In the same way, we would like to express our sincere willingness to be as helpful as possible with the family, friends or institutions.” The accident is one of the deadliest in Spain in recent years. In November 2014, a bus carrying pilgrims fell into a ravine in the south-east of the country, leaving 14 dead and another 41 injured. Puigdemont was set to travel to Paris on Sunday, but cancelled the trip to go to the site of the accident. He led five minutes’ silence on Monday, in memory of the students at the University of Barcelona, accompanied by the city’s Mayor, Ada Colau.

Djokovic calls for equal pay review NOVAK Djokovic, the world’s No.1 tennis player and acknowledged as one of the all-time greats, believes men should be paid more prizemoney than women.

His comment came after a top tournament chief courted controversy by saying the women’s game was “very lucky” to match the men’s take-home winnings. Raymond Moore, Indian Wells Tennis chief, sparked outrage on Sunday when he said top-level women’s players rode “on the coattails of the men”. Moore added: “If I were a lady player, I’d go down every night on my knees and thank God that Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal were born, because they have carried this sport.” The 69-year-old South African later apologised for his sexist remarks which, he admitted, were “in extremely poor taste and erroneous”. Djokovic, fresh from beating Milos Raonic 6-2, 6-0 to claim his fifth

Indian Wells title, acknowledged Moore’s comments were “not politically correct” and that women players had “fought for what they deserve, and they got it”. But he also suggested that the men’s tour should receive more money because they attract more fans to games. “I think our men’s tennis world should fight for more because the stats show we have many more spectators on the men’s tennis matches,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons why, maybe, we should get awarded more.” Serena Williams, who suffered a shock 6-4, 6-4 defeat in the women’s final by Victoria Azaren-

ka, criticised Moore’s remarks, saying: “Obviously, I don’t think any woman should be down on her knees thanking anybody like that.” The women’s world No.1, and holder of 21 Grand Slam titles, added: “If I could tell you every day how many people say they don’t watch tennis unless they’re watching myself or my sister, Venus, I couldn’t even bring up that number.” The legendary Billie Jean King, who cofounded the WTA Tour, tweeted: “Disappointed in #RaymondMoore comments. He is wrong on so many levels. Every player, especially the top players, contribute to our success.”

The dashing Danes DENMARK is revealed to be the world’s happiest country, says a new survey, while Burundi, in Africa is the unhappiest!

The fourth World Happiness Report also found that countries where there was less inequality were happier overall. Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Finland, which, like Denmark, have strong social-security systems, made up the rest of the top five. The US was the world’s 13th happiest country, the UK 23rd, China 83rd and India 118th. And at the very foot of the 156 countries surveyed was Burundi, which is experiencing severe political unrest and the threat of violence.

It scored even worse than Syria, where a civil war has killed more than 250,000 people over the past five years. Burundi, which borders Rwanda, is one of the 10 poorest countries in the world, damaged dreadfully by civil wars, corruption, poor access to education and the effects of HIV. The survey found Syrians had a better healthy-life expectancy and were also seen as being more generous than Burundians and people in the three other nations - Togo, Afghanistan and Benin - making up the five least-happy countries. Northern America, Latin America and the Caribbean and Europe were the happiest regions overall. South Asia and subSaharan Africa were the only regions where the

average rating for wellbeing was under five out of 10. The report - compiled by the UN’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) - is an analysis of Gallup World Poll data, generated from surveys of 1,000 people in each country every year for three years. They were asked to evaluate their lives on a ladder scale of 0-10. The researchers defined six key categories: gross domestic product (a nation’s output of goods and services) per capita, social support, healthy-life expectancy, personal freedom, charitable giving and perceived corruption. Spain has been ranked a lowly 37 three places behind Saudi Arabia a country that forbids women to drive and in 2015 alone beheaded over 150 people.

Five family members drown, but swim hero rescues 4-month baby TRAGEDY struck in Ireland on Sunday when a father and four others from the same Londonderry family drowned after their car plunged into a harbour accidentally.

The incident happened at Donegal’s Buncrana Pier around 7.45pm on Sunday, and emergency services recovered the bodies of two boys, a man and a woman, and a second female. But a baby girl, just four months old, was handed over by the driver - her father - to local villager Davitt Walsh, who swam out to the sinking car in an effort to help. The tot was later in a stable condition in nearby Letterkenny Hospital. Sean McGrotty, 49, drowned with his young sons, Mark, 12, and eight-year-old Evan, together with his motherin-law, Ruth Daniels, and her daughter, Jodie-Lee, when their Audi q7 apparently slid on algae and slipped off the end of the pier, into the Buncrana harbour, in northwest Ireland. Moments before his death, Sean handed his baby daughter, Rionaghac-Ann, to Mr Walsh, telling him, ‘Save the baby’. Mr Walsh, describing the moment he reached the stricken car, said: “The father looked at

me and he had to make a decision. He could have saved himself because he was out of the car, but he handed her over and went back inside. “I couldn’t do anything else - the car went down instantly and the whole lot of them went down it was just so fast. I took the baby back to the shore.” Witness Francis Crawford said passer-by Mr Walsh, who saw the tragedy unfolding, quickly stripped down to his underwear before plunging into the icy water. “He was a hero who risked his own life,” he added. “When he came back he was totally exhausted. If he’d had another five yards to go, I can’t see how he would have made it.” Mr Crawford said he felt “hopeless and helpless”, as the vehicle became submerged.

“There was nothing you could do and the driver was shouting at me to call the coastguard,” he recalled. “I said, ‘I’ve phoned them, everyone is on their way’, and he was still shouting.” It is not clear how the car ended up in the harbour, but it is believed that Mr McGrotty was attempting to turn it around on the slipway after the family’s day trip to Buncrana. The area is popular with families all over the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is not far over the border. Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said on Twitter: “Very sad news of fatalities in an incident at Buncrana Pier. Thoughts are with relatives of those involved and rescue services.” Father Paddy O’Kane, from Holy Family Church

in Londonderry, comforted Mr McGrotty’s partner, Louise James, at her Ballymagroarty home. Having lost her partner Sean, two sons, plus her mother and sister, The distraught 35-year-old told her parish priest: “My baby’s the only reason for me to go on.” He said: “I am 43 years a priest and nothing compares with this. This is way beyond anything in my wildest imagination - the worst thing I have ever had.” Baby Rionaghac-Ann was christened in January, and Father O’Kane added: “It was a time of celebration. Little did we think that so soon after, we were going to have such a tragedy on our doorstep.” Hundreds of mourners bowed their heads in respect as Louise helped carry all the coffins into their home.

House prices are through the roof

THE average price for a house in England and Wales has climbed above £300,000 for the first time, according to new data from Rightmove, the property website. Across those countries, the average price last month was £299,287, beating last October’s previous record of £296,549. Now the average price tag for a house is £303,190, up 7.6%

from this time last year. House prices have jumped by more than £100,000 over the last 10 years: in 2006, the average was £200,980. Records have also been set for asking prices in six regions in March: *North West - £177,437 *West Midlands - £204,140 *South West - £292,251 *East of England £326,836 *South East - £399,680 *London - £644,045

Unlike previous months, though, the leading house-price growth area was not London but across the North and West of England, according to the property website. London prices increased by 11% from the year before, but were flat from February. Yet experts say next month’s stamp-duty increase has led a rush on house-buying in recent months.

BRIAN Reader, known to be one of the Hatton Garden ringleaders, has been jailed for six years and three months at the age of 77 for his part in last year’s daring, £14m raid in the heart of London’s diamond district.

The oldest member of the gang - an evergreen criminal - suffered a stroke in Belmarsh Prison following the biggest burglary in English history. Reader, appearing via video link at Woolwich Crown Court, was sentenced by Judge Christopher Kinch QC after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary last September. Judge Kinch said he took into account the fact that Reader, now using a walking frame, was “seriously unwell” and needed daily assistance with routine tasks. He said Reader, from Dartford, Kent, had a range of medical problems which were “potentially, very serious indeed”. But he added: “I’m satisfied that you were rightly described as one of the ringleaders and involved in regular meetings.” The judge pointed out that while Reader was not present on the second night of the heist, he was there the first night and during “at least one dry-run”. He also said it seemed that he’d “had enough” on the first night and went home. The judge, who suggested Reader decided, perhaps, that “the en-

terprise wasn’t actually going to succeed”, said there was “a degree of irony” in the way Reader was known as “The Master”. The frail-looking pensioner appeared on screens in the court, wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt and glasses. His lawyer, Hesham Puri, told the judge that Reader earned nothing from the heist. “He did not receive any benefit,” he said. “He withdrew from the plot and was excluded. The others made disparaging remarks about him later.” The lawyer said jewellery found hidden in a drain in the garden of his home was his own, and there were photographs of his late wife wearing it. Reader’s previous convictions go back more than 60 years, including a burglary conviction in 1950. The Hatton Garden gang, with a combined age of almost 450 years and nicknamed the “Diamond Wheezers”, carried out the “sophisticated” and meticulously-planned break-in over last year’s Easter weekend. They ransacked 73 boxes at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit after drilling a huge hole in the vault wall. Valuables worth up to £14 million, including gold, diamonds and sapphires, were taken. But two-thirds of the haul has yet to be recovered. Another thief, known only as Basil and still at large, was instrumental in helping the gang get into the vault. The other men convicted in connection with the burglary were sentenced at Woolwich earlier this month.

Legal & Business

By Mariano Zunino Siri SOME time ago, I was consulted by a married couple of Colombian nationality. Their daughter was born in Spain, but the Registry did not accept that the child had Spanish nationality. To make matters worse, another son of the same marriage had been registered as Spanish national. The question is: “Are Spaniards all born in Spain? Ius Soli - Ius Sanguini On nationality matters, there are two major legal systems globally: one is the “ius soli” which is generally applicable in the Latin American countries, by which everyone born in that country bears that nationality, irrespective of the parents’ nationality.

25th March - 31st March 2016

Great nationality puzzle

The other one is the “ius sanguini”, which interprets that the child takes the nationality of their parents, regardless of the country in which he/she was born. There are other types. such as the “ius domicili” (place of domicile of the parents) and today, most countries use combined systems. This is the general concept, although, as is often the case in law, there are some aspects which muddy the waters. The Spanish case Nationality is regulated in the Civil Code, articles 17-28. These state the ways to acquire, retain and lose Spanish nationality, distinguishing for example, Spanish nationality of origin, adoption, letters of naturalisation, residence and so on. To be legally Spanish by origin, the law states (Article 17.1 of the Civil Code): a) those born of a Spanish father or mother; b) those born

in Spain of foreign parents if at least one of them was also born in Spain (except the children of diplomats); c) And this is where the point that my Colombian clients come in: “Those born in Spain of foreign parents, if both of them should be without Spanish nationality if the legislation of neither parent should grant their nationality to the child”. It´s a little legalese, but what it means is, except for the cases of stateless children, it is down to the laws of the parents’ country. The registry would need to clarify the information on the national law of the parents’ nationality, to determine which country has the child’s nationality. In other words, not all children born in Spain of foreign citizens will be Spaniards of origin. This goes against the simple presumption of

“birth equals nationality”, but it will depend on the law of the country of the parents. It means that according to Spanish law, those born of foreign parents have the nationality of their parents, but there are countries that do not grant their nationality to the children born abroad. To prevent these children lacking citizenship the mere presumption of Spanish nationality is granted. To process the record of Spanish nationality by mere presumption, the following documents must be submitted: 1) Literal birth certificate of the new-born in Spain; 2) certificate of registration at the Town Hall of parents (and coexistence, stating that the child lives with them); 3) birth certificate of each of the parents from their national country, duly legalised (Apostille of The

Hague Convention, or authenticated through the Spanish Consulate, as appropriate); 4) marriage certificate; 5 ) original and photocopy of passports of parents; 6) Consular certificate (issued by the Consulate of the country of origin in Spain) stating that the law of that country does not recognise the said nationality to the child. The General Directorate of Registries and Notaries published a list of some countries in which the Spanish law would be applied. This means, for example, the case of Latin American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba and Peru. NOTE: Colombian nationality law is a mixture of “ius soli”, “ius sanguini” and “ius domicili”. According to Colombia Constitution, Colombians are the children of

a Colombian father or mother, who were born abroad and then became domiciled in Colombia, or registered in a consular office of the Republic, and by adoption. So, in the present case, if the Colombian progenitors do not enrol their child born in Spain in the Colombia Consulate, they may obtain a certificate that will enable them to obtain Spanish nationality for the child by presumption. In case of refusal, the resolution should be appealed in an administrative and contentiousadministrative way. Bear in mind that there is a Double Nationality Treaty, signed between Spain and Colombia in 1979. Sterling’s ups and downs By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct

THE pound weakened in the runup to the UK Government’s 2016 Budget, in anticipation of possible stringent measures, but there were no major surprises.

Among the biggest winners were married pensioners who, with the increased pension credit, will now receive an extra £348 annually. Those living in the Canaries can expect a further 440 euros in

their pockets, based on the current rate of exchange. A single pensioner, with a state pension, will have an additional £4.40 a week only - so, depending on where you drink, two to three extra pints or glasses of vino a week in Tenerife! Once the BoE rate decision came out unchanged, this was good news for sterling, which showed an increase against most currencies, and tipped towards the 1.28 GBP/EUR mark. Sterling stayed close to its lowest level against the euro in more than three months. The EU Referendum remains a factor for the performance of the pound, and the resignation of Works-andPensions Secretary Ian Duncan Smith resulted in a small drop in sterling. Uncertainty is the key word, with manufacturing output down in the first quarter of 2016. However, the CBI’s (Confederation of British Industry) survey indicated that there was still a big demand for orders. Moody’s, the credit-

ratings agency, also added fuel to the fire with its opinion that Brexit will put huge pressure on UK companies, causing more market uncertainty. Investments will be on hold until a decision is made, either way. The tragic news of Tuesday’s terrorist at-

tacks on Brussels was reflected in the sterling-to-euro rate. And, of course, as happened after the Paris attacks, this could prompt more support for the UK “leave” campaign. Bookmakers have all narrowed their odds on Brexit, which remains the biggest negative for

the pound at present. Wishing you all a good Easter - and here’s hoping we can still afford chocolate eggs, what with the sugar tax! Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, our friendly experts at Currencies Direct are just a phone call away,

whenever you need them. At home in Spain since 1999, they have 10 offices across the country, including one in Tenerife, and are set to open more Spanish offices soon. Phone: 922 971 781 E: canaries@currencies direct.com currenciesdirect.com

Acting government looks to cut Spanish financing SPAIN’S acting government aims to enforce stricter controls over regional financing while seeking to convince Brussels it can keep the country’s budget deficit in check. Spain, yet to form a new government after an inconclusive election last December, has been warned several times by the European Commission that it must do more to cut its deficit this year. The Commission deemed that a 2016 budget plan, passed before the election by the centre-right People’s Party (PP), was based on overly-optimistic growth forecasts and needed revising.

Under EU rules, Madrid must bring its headline budget deficit below the EU threshold of 3% of gross domestic product, cutting it to 2.8% from a 2015 goal of 4.2%. Economy Minister Luis de Guindos stressed in an interview with the ABC newspaper that overspending by Spain’s 17 autonomous regions was the main risk to the country’s overall deficit targets. He added that the regions were already likely to have overshot their own goals by a wide margin in 2015. “In the stability programme we have to send to Brussels by the end of April, the Gov-

ernment will include a series of measures to correct that deviation,” said De Guindos. Asked if Spain would seek more time from Brussels to meet its 2016 deficit goal, as advocated by rival parties - including the Socialists - De Guindos merely said: “What is important now is that our plan to reduce the deficit at a regional level should be seen as credible.” Madrid can penalise regions if they miss deficit targets, though it has shied away from using sanctions. It could also impose stricter conditions on the funding it hands out to local governments.

Parties on the right and left in Spain are still struggling to form a viable coalition after all fell short of a majority in the wake of an uneven recovery from recession. Spaniards could yet have to head back to the polls in June. De Guindos told ABC that Spain was well placed to achieve economic growth of close to 3% this year after expanding by 3.2% in 2015. Quarterly growth would slow slightly in the January-March period to 0.7%, from 0.8% between October-December, largely through faltering global prospects, he said.

In The Footsteps Of Judas BBC1, 09.00

To mark Good Friday this onehour documentary sees one of Britain’s bestloved vicars, Kate Bottley, re-open the case against the Bible’s most notorious villain - Judas Iscariot. Kate’s journey takes her from her parish in Nottingham to Jerusalem, where she pieces together the events leading up to the Crucifixion. Why did Judas betray his Master at his most desperate hour? And on a day when we remember that Jesus died for all our sins, is Judas excluded from that forgiveness? A number of leading theological experts contribute to Kate’s investigation, as she visits the Upper Room of the Last Supper; Gethsemane - the scene of Judas’ treacherous kiss; and the Field of Blood, where, according to Christian tradition, Judas hanged himself. Ultimately, Kate demonstrates why Judas matters and why he is central to our understanding of the Christian message today.

W C c h oice International Football Friendly ITV1, 19.30 Mark Pougatch introduces live coverage of England’s friendly against traditional rivals and World Cup winners Germany from Berlin. England made sure of their place in this summer’s Euro 2016 finals in September and since then have only lost once, to European champions Spain in a friendly in November. Roy Hodgson’s men will want to carry their good form into this key warm-up game. While England won every game in their qualifying group, Germany topped a group which included Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and Poland. The last time the two teams met in a friendly at Wembley in November 2013, Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker scored the only goal to win a tight game. Coincidentally, the last time England beat the Germans was also at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium in 2008, when John Terry scored a late winner in a 2-1 victory. Studio guests are German legend Lothar Matthaus, Ian Wright and Lee Dixon, and commentary comes from Clive Tyldesley and former England manager Glenn Hoddle, with Gabriel Clarke the pitchside reporter.

Journalist and broadcaster Martha Kearney, novelist Helen Oyeyemi, and columnist and author Lucy Mangan travel to Haworth Parsonage, the home of the Brontë sisters, to discover the stories behind their classic novels Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey. Just two years before these works were published, prospects for the three unmarried sisters were looking bleak. Their brother was battling an alcohol-fuelled breakdown, Charlotte was hopelessly in love with a married man and their father was going blind. But by 1848 they were a literary sensation. How was it that Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë managed such a sudden and miraculous creative achievement, in the face of adversity? With help from a range of experts, each presenter will explore one of the Brontës in fascinating detail. By re-living the sisters’ daily routines, visiting the key places in their world, studying their private letters and exploring their interactions with each other, they’ll discover what it was that served as their sources of inspiration.

Natural Born Winners BBC2, 20.00 BST

In a rousing new series for BBC Two, four sporting heroes will take on some of the most demanding traditional sports in the world in a bid to be the ultimate competitor. Canadian 100 metre gold-medallist Donovan Bailey; World, Commonwealth and European champion sprinter Iwan Thomas; former Wales rugby captain Gareth Thomas; and World Superbike champion James Toseland will compete against each other in four epic challenges across the globe, each one tougher than the last. The stakes are high, with their pride on the line. They’ll need to show they’ve got the endurance, strength, speed and commitment it takes to go the distance and perform well in all four disciplines. Starting in the heart of mid Wales, it’s the first leg of their challenge and a chance for the sportsmen to get to know each other. Donovan Bailey, Gareth Thomas, Iwan Thomas and James Toseland will be taking on the notorious fell run, Man Versus Horse: 21 miles of endurance running over some of the most hostile terrain in the UK, racing against horse and rider. Meeting in the small Welsh village of Llanwrtyd Wells at the pub where the run originates from, the scale of the challenge starts to dawn on them. The race is a real test of stamina and the runners will have to take on punishing hills, cut through forests and wade through freezing water in the exposed countryside. Hailing from different sporting disciplines and with varying degrees of fitness levels, the foursome will have to do some serious training over the next four weeks if they want to complete the course. But as three of the group get stuck in with some hill practice with former race champion Dic Evans, it’s evident that one of them is starting to struggle. Former sprinter Donovan Bailey is not used to running long distances, and he soon finds himself lagging behind. Missing the comforts of home, Donovan’s enthusiasm for the challenge is waning. In order to conquer 21 miles they will need to push their bodies to the limit. Who has got what it takes to triumph in the first test?

W C c h oice Tribes, Predators & Me BBC2, 21.00 BST Wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan joins a group of The Ju/’hoansi Bushmen in Botswana’s brutal Kalahari Desert to learn how to survive among wild lions. ‘Western’ knowledge of lions has traditionally been gained from scientists working from vehicles, but the Bushmen have lived among and tracked lions on foot for thousands of years. The Bushmen speak a unique ‘click’ language and greet Gordon warmly at their hunting camp. The tribe teach him how to make fire by rubbing sticks, how to subdue killer bees with smoke to collect honey, how to find water hidden underground and how to hunt antelope with poisoned arrows. This tribe tracks lions on foot in the hope that these cats will lead them to prey or a fresh kill. Gordon and the tribe are visited by lions while sleeping at night and find sobering evidence of the power of this big cat. Will Gordon be brave enough to help the Bushmen approach a wild lion to retrieve some of its antelope kill to help feed the tribe?

From the banks of the River Thames in London, Clare Balding introduces live coverage of one of the oldest and most iconic events in the sporting calendar. This year’s meeting between Oxford and Cambridge universities will see the 162nd men’s Boat Race and the 71st contest between the women, who for the second year running compete on the same day and the same course as the men. Cambridge lead in both the men’s and women’s all-time standings, but in recent years the Dark Blues of Oxford have proved formidable opponents, winning six of the last eight men’s races and seven of the last eight women’s contests.

This Farming Life BBC2, 19:00

A look at modern farming life in Scotland. In Argyll, Sybil prepares for George’s 50th birthday and the arrival of her sister and niece from England. Sybil and George are also looking after a desperately ill cow. Julia K had a traumatic caesarean and is too weak to stand up on her own, so they decide to lift her to her feet twice a day using a sling and a forklift truck to help build her muscles up. East of Inverness, persistent rain means Martin’s cattle and young calves are yet to be turned out of their winter sheds into the fields. Sybil’s sister and niece arrive and there’s tension over the question of who will take on the family farm in the future. In central Scotland near Loch Lomond, Bobby and Anne hold an open day to educate the public about farming. North of Aberdeen, John has to urgently call the vet when one of his heifers gets into difficulty calving.

Inside Obama’s White House BBC2, 21.00

In the third episode of ‘Inside Obama’s White House’ – an authoritative account of Obama’s successes and failures as told by his inner circle – we explore how Barack Obama set out to end George Bush’s wars in the Middle East and reset relations with the rest of the world. In Cairo, Obama spoke to the Arab world, calling democracy a human right. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defence Secretary Robert Gates describe how two years later protests erupted in Tahrir square. The President is torn between their view that Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak provides stability in the region, and the views of his younger advisors who believed in the promise of the Arab Spring. Before long, a similar test arises in Libya, Hillary Clinton changes her position to back military intervention and Obama agrees to join allies in airstrikes against Col Gaddafi. In Syria, when shocking evidence shows the use of chemical weapons, Obama decides to bomb. But former Foreign Secretary William Hague explains why the British Parliament voted against intervention in 2013, and President Obama explains why he then decided to seek the backing of a reluctant Congress. This episode also explores how Obama scored a big win when he negotiated a secret deal to end the nuclear threat from Iran – behind the backs of his closest allies. Secretary of State John Kerry tells how he worked through the night with President Obama on the phone to secure the outlines of the deal.

Bake Off Crème de la Crème BBC2, 20:00

Celebrated chef Tom Kerridge hosts the search for Britain’s best team of pastry chefs. Battling it out in the first heat are three young chefs from a five-star hotel, a team which invents desserts for a leading supermarket and a trio of chefs who work in secret restaurants hidden away in the city of London. Judging and scoring their efforts are Benoit Blin, chef patissier at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, Claire Clark MBE, world-renowned pastry chef and consultant, and Cherish Finden, executive pastry chef at The Langham, London. In the first challenge, the teams must produce three different mouthwatering patisserie items. They must make 36 identical items of each pastry and the pressure is almost too much for some. In the second challenge, the team must transform an ordinary dessert into an incredible fine dining experience with their showpiece.

President Trump: Can He Really Win?

25th March - 31st March 2016

Wed 30th Mar

Channel 4, 21:00

Donald Trump has now emerged as the clear front runner for the Republican Presidential nomination. His popularity has reached fever pitch. Matt Frei asks: can Trump really go all the way to the White House? As the race to the Oval Office has heated up the billionaire tycoon has continued to spark indignation, been criticised by the Pope and had his rivals question the size of his genitals. Along the way ‘the Donald’ has won key states and increased his support while some of his rallies have been consumed by mass protests. His position may now be unassailable, as Trump himself puts it: ‘I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters’. Frei asks if those who want to stop him have any chance of doing so. Can he beat Hillary Clinton? Can he convince the American voters to sweep his political circus into the top job? America is now waking up to an extraordinary reality: Donald Trump could actually become President.

Horizon BBC2, 20:00 The Mystery of Dark Energy. Horizon looks at dark energy - the mysterious force that is unexpectedly causing the universe’s expansion to speed up. The effects of dark energy were discovered in 1998 but physicists still don’t know what it is. Worse, its very existence calls into question Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity - the cornerstone of modern physics. The hunt for the identity of dark energy is on. Experiments on earth and in space generate data that might provide a clue, but there are also hopes that another Einstein might emerge - someone who can write a new theory explaining the mystery of the dark energy.

Bear Grylls: Mission Survive

25th March - 31st March 2016

T h ursday

ITV1, 21.00 After eight days in the wild, four celebrities remain and it’s clear that the physical strain is taking its

toll. The group are led to an estuary. For a survivor, this is a lifeline which means food, water and more importantly, a means of travel. It does, however, also have its dangers, and in South Africa that means Bull Sharks. The celebrities are split into two teams. Their task; to build a raft that will get them across the estuary safely. The tide is coming in and with it the risk of a shark attack increases. Time is running out. Working in pairs, will it be a case of two heads are better than one, or will heads butt? Staying calm under pressure is key, but can they keep it together? Once across they have to prepare their camp. With a place in the final within reach, Bear wants to see what they have learnt as individuals. The celebrities must each build their own shelter. But the rookies have no idea that Bear has one further test. In the dead of night he sends Meg and Scott into camp with a surprise they won’t forget. The next day Bear meets the group at the mouth of the estuary. The celebrities are already aware of the importance of staying hydrated, however what do you do when there’s no clean water available? Never asking the group to do anything he is not prepared to do himself, Bear sets them the task with a rather personal demonstration which shocks the celebrities. Will they take up his challenge or walk? With one last chance to prove to Bear that they deserve to be in the final, the remaining celebrities must navigate their way along the dangerous Southern African coast. They take on the jagged rocks and dangerous swells. Bear has been watching closely. For one more celebrity, the journey is over, and for the remaining three the race to become Bear’s ultimate mission survivor is closer than ever. This year the expedition team confronted more terrifying challenges than ever before: surviving dangerous animals, facing a dizzying arsenal of high-octane survival scenarios and travelling further across the mountains and down to the coast. Combined with ever changing weather conditions – from the harsh African sun to torrential rain and bitterly cold nights – this journey is the toughest Bear has ever set for celebrity survival rookies.

Scorpion ITV2, 21.00 Team Scorpion must sabotage their own Nasa mission in order to rescue Walter’s bad date. Scorpion is inspired by a true story - its a high-octane drama about eccentric genius Walter O’Brien (played by Elyes Gabel) and his team of brilliant misfits who are the last line of defence against complex, hightech threats of the modern age. O’Brien’s “Scorpion” team includes Toby Curtis (played by Eddie Kaye Thomas), an expert behaviourist who can read anyone, Happy Quinn (played by Jadyn Wong), a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvestor Dodd (played by Ari Stidham), a statistics guru. Pooling their extensive knowledge to solve mind boggling dramas amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo (played by Robert Patrick), who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien. However, while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other’s humour and quirks, life outside their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen (played by Katharine McPhee), who has a young gifted son, to translate the world for them. These nerdy masterminds have at last found the perfect job; a place where they can apply their exceptional brainpower to solves the nation’s crises, while also helping each other learn how to fit in.

DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston, pictured) looks deeper into Danny Waldron’s background and makes a shocking discovery. Arnott’s life is complicated by an investigation into his own past conduct, but - determined to vindicate himself - Steve prioritises his leads into the Danny Waldron case. The increasing pressure on Danny’s team pushes Danny’s colleague Rod (Will Mellor) to the edge.

Boy, George is good! By Brad Chermside

A FADING sun is setting in a bloodred desert sky on Freemont Street, one of most famous thoroughfares in Las Vegas. Lady Gaga, Marilyn Monroe and Joan Rivers, among a whole of host of stellar names, are playing up to the paparazzi on the red carpet of The Golden Nugget Casino.

Everything about the scene is genuine - apart from the celebrities.

They are professional impersonators, arriving at The Reel Awards, in which, last month, Tenerife’s Keith George was nominated for Best Tribute in the Rock and Pop category with his show, The Boy George Experience. With nominations strictly closed to fans, friends and family, Keith received the highest personal accolade of a nomination from fellowindustry peers. And though he didn’t come away with the grand prize, won by a Canadian George Michael lookalike, Keith did have the privilege of performing at the ceremony. In the presence of the creme de la crème from the world of impersonating, as well as talentseeking agents and managers, he sung a selection of Boy George’s

biggest hits and described the experience as “Nerve-racking but truly amazing”. The annual Reel Awards, now in their 22nd year, attract worldwide media attention and are regarded as The Oscars and The

Grammys in the field of impersonation. In addition to the ceremony itself, a plethora of fringe activities add to the glitz and glamour, including street parties, open-air concerts and red-carpet photo opportunities with the

‘stars.’ As a result of Keith’s involvement he has featured in full page articles in The New York Post and The Sun and also appeared on a local television show in Las Vegas called That’s So Vegas. Recognition from his fellow-professionals just keeps coming. Last October he was voted Entertainer’s Entertainer of the Year at the Tenerife Entertainment Awards, and even the man himself, Boy George recently tweeted Keith with this glowing endorsement: “I was watching you with my manager and we both think you do me proud.” The horizon looks very bright indeed for Keith. He has summer gigs booked in Ibiza, Athens and Cyprus and has hit the jackpot bagging various weekend dates

at Grosvenor Casinos throughout the U.K. If you’d like to catch his award-winning show in Tenerife, featuring spectacular jackets and hats made by Boy George’s very own clothier and milliner, here’s where he’s performing: Monday: 10pm, The Pearly Grey (fortnightly).11, Johnny Kelly Elvis Bar Tuesday: 9pm, Restaurante Margarita.10.15, Bar Canario Wednesday: 9.15pm, The Top Square. 10.30, The Pheasant Plucker. 11.30, St. Eugene’s Thursday: 10pm, The Rumpot. 11pm, Harvey’s You can follow Keith on Twitter @boygeorgeexp or on Facebook by liking his page The Boy George Experience and at his website www. boygeorgeexperience. com

Bowie’s permanent shrine AFTER the New York death of pop-legend David Bowie in January, a mural was created in Brixton, South London, where thousands of fans paid tribute by leaving gifts or flowers there.

It was transformed into a shrine and now, Lambeth Council has announced that the artwork will be listed, so that it will always be protected. Bowie was born in Brixton, and the local Council has announced plans for a more-permanent memorial to the artist. It is in contact with his family, to discuss the renaming of Tunstall

Place, where the mural can be found - on the side of the department store Morleys. The possibility of a statue has also been considered. Lambert Council leader Lib Peck said in a statement: “It is, ultimately, the family’s decision as to what may be appropriate. “We must respect that, and be patient. Lambeth residents have been overwhelmed by

the outpouring of affection. “This has been demonstrated, visibly, by floral tributes and messages, and by people visiting the Bowie mural to pay their respects to this unique “Brixton boy”. “We are also in contact with the Bowie fan club, and other Brixton organisations, who want to honour the memory - and legacy - of this extraordinary artist.”

He added: “We will share any word we get from his family that will determine what we do next.” But the Council says that any flowers still

next to the mural will soon be removed. Morleys says it will preserve messages on the brick wall, and drawings and cards will be stored in the Council archives.

You never quite know who is going to turn up in Tenerife and this week one of America´s biggest reality TV stars was here.

Storage Wars star Barry Weiss spent a few days in the south of Tenerife. He was here in search of a vintage car and made time to catch some of the Rally cars on show at Siam Mall. Barry said he enjoyed his brief trip here so much that he is coming back in May!

By Vanessa Vee THIS may surprise you, but Lanzarote is turning into a ratherupmarket destination! Don’t expect anything glitzy or flashy, though.

This quiet revolution is all about staying in chic, eco-friendly places, and spending your days cycling, walking and surfing, or sampling local wines. With a vast choice of direct flights from Tenerife North airport, and an average 50-minute flight time, it is a perfect choice for a quick away break. Residents receive a 50% discount on internal flights, so Lanzarote can be a budget-friendly destination, or you can seek out the luxurious end of the market. There are excellent,

family hotels in Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise, but there is also a wide range of lowkey places, away from the resorts. You can choose from boutique hotels, village houses, traditionallystyled apartments and bungalows, or even luxury yurts.

As in all the Canary Islands, good weather is generally guaranteed. It does tend to get windy sometimes, just like Tenerife. Storms aren’t totally unknown, but, most of the time, it is pleasant and sunny, with an average temperature of 22C. As an alternative to lying on the beach, some-

thing we can do most of the time in Tenerife, try visiting the extraordinary sights created in the volcanic landscape. Don’t miss a tour of the Timafaya National Park. Take the boat over to the “eighth” Canary Island of La Graciosa, for a blissful day of swimming in crystalclear waters.

Visit some of the vineyards in La Geria, or hire bikes to test your stamina on some of the renowned cycling routes on offer around the island. As with Tenerife, trying to paint a picture - in so few words - is virtually impossible, so I recommend that you take the plunge, and head over to discover the differences between our beautiful Canary Islands. Tenerife Sunshine Travel is currently offering a Lanzarote Weekend (residents’ special)

in April. Two nights, allinclusive accommodation in a 4-star resort in Playa Blanca, including return residents’ flights and resort transfers, is from only 310 euros per person. On request, other dates, board basis and accommodation are available, as are prices for non-residents. Man Flu?

CONTROL YOUR DUDE

It does exist! By Val Sainsbury

By Carl Pattison

IF the sight of your man, spluttering and complaining in his armchair, gets on your nerves, show him a bit more sympathy!

“TAKING home any products, Sir?” Long gone are the days when the stylist left it to you guys to choose your own styling gear. But which is right for you, and are you using the correct one? Let’s start with hair wax, which comes in many forms. Matte gives hold, but leaves no shine or greasiness. It will texturise, and make shorter, choppier styles sleeker, but it can be hard to remove. Soft wax, too, is great for making the hair look slick, and it gives shine

We all joke about Man Flu - us girls anyway but scientists have discovered that it really does exist. The poor darlings have weaker immune systems than those of the ladies, so they can’t cope with the bugs as efficiently. But there is a downside to the fair sex having stronger defences against bacteria and viruses, according to scientists at the University of Pennsylvania. They say the stronger immune system in females makes it more trigger-happy - and more likely to launch attacks on itself, causing auto-immune diseases. Many such ailments, where a person’s body comes under attack from its own defences, are usually less common in men. Lupus is an auto-immune disease, which means that the immune system mistakes the body’s own tissues as foreign invaders and attacks parts of the body, including the skin, joints and internal organs. And it is 85% more likely to occur in women than in men. Other auto-immune diseases significantly more common in women than men include rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. The reason for women having stronger immune systems lies in their genes, or, more specifically, the chromosomes, groupings of around 2,000 genes. Each human has 23 pairs of chromosomes. Sex is determined by two genes: in women, two X chromosomes, and in men, one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. And the doubling-up of the X chromosome

to longer looks that need slight control. This isn’t easily removed, either. Another great product is Fibre, also known as Hairputty. It is best used on texturised, messier looks, rather than for sleeking. Gels aren’t normally seen these days because they tend to give a rigid look that’s not too popular. Pomades is a light,

slightly-greasy product that doesn’t weigh down the hair. It isn’t greasy to the touch, and is great for very-short, texturised crops, or for medium-length hair that needs little control. At the moment, guys’ hair is large on the volume. “Root-booster sprays” will give you the hold you need to create those Fifties’ rolls, which are currently big on style. If you’re lost in your choice for product purchases, always ask your stylist. He/she will not only recommend what you should buy, but you will be shown the effect that these products create, before you splash the cash.

NEW SLANT ON THINGS is the key to women’s extra power in their immune systems because X chromosomes contain more immunity-related genes. The researchers found that in women, the X chromosomes have a greater effect at activating the immune system’s T and B lymphocytes - ‘killer cells’ that fight infections. This can have the unfortunate effect of making the defences more likely to turn on the body’s own tissues. The authors, writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences state: “Clinical studies have demonstrated that females have a more hyper-responsive immune system than males, following immune challenges.” The authors add that because of their extra X chromosome, women produce more antibodies, particularly one called serum IgM, which is the biggest antibody molecule produced in the hu-

man body, and “first responder” to infections. The extra production of antibodies, say the authors, “is immunologically advantageous, whereas males are more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections.” But they add: “This strong female-specific immune response is not always beneficial and can result in autoimmunity.’ The authors claim that this is “the first mechanistic evidence to our knowledge for the enhanced immunity of females, and their increased susceptibility for auto-immunity.’ Researcher Montserrat Anguera, of the University of Pennsylvania, said: “What caught my attention about auto-immunity and specifically lupus, was that there were genes on the X chromosome that were immunity-related. And that had been shown to have higher expression-levels in lupus patients.”

By Carl Pattison WHILE I was mooching round the stores at the weekend, one “look” jumped out from the rails for all you fashionistas out there. Still sticking with all things Retro, there’s a new “slant” - pardon the pun - and it’s “asymmetrical”. Brought right up to date in everything, from loose and floaty to sculptured and fitted, asymmetrical can look great on most body frames, because it elongates and shapes the figure. There’s no age limit to this fashion-trend either, as it spans the vogues from younger, to more-mature, age

groups. You can pick up on this fashion hit, which is in most stores, by choosing to go for a single item - say a top or skirt - or by putting the two together to really rock this look. It also works for all lengths of skirts. They don’t have to be short - floaty looks great, too. Even if you’re looking for a chic-night-out number, this slashedhem effect has that touch of elegance, as well as a “look-at-me” edginess. Stick to bold colours in shades that accentuate the edges - or opt for one striking colour to show off this eye-catching look. If you’re going for

floaty, head in the direction of pastel shades, to give this a summery feel. Stay away from florals, as this look is edgy, not classical. As with all fashion, not everything is for everyone. Each week, I try to bring to your attention what’s hot - and what’s not - in the stores. Try out asymmetrical, and put a new slant on your spring/summer.

Removing fear from a visit to the dentist THE Clinica Dental Tenerife Sur has its practice in Fairway Village, on Golf del Sur. And head dentist Dr Liviano Folla specialises in Maxillofacial Surgery and Implants.

He speaks Italian, German, French, English and Spanish and is thoroughly committed to delivering the best oral health care for his patients in a welcoming atmosphere, free from worry, anxiety, and pain! He leads a team which includes endodontists and periodontists, general dentists, dental hygienists, maxillofacial prosthodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Clinica Dental Tenerife Sur is able to treat the full-spectrum of oral, dental, and jawrelated problems, from simple tooth decay to complex, maxillofacial

defects secondary to surgery, trauma, and congenital deformities, and aesthetic makeovers. And Dr Folla. who explains how going to the dentist is not a traumatic experience, has some advice for those who have always feared the dentist! “Unfortunately a large section of the general population avoids the dentist because of fear,” he says. “ This all-too-common ‘dental phobia’ prevents peo-

ple from receiving necessary, routine dental care, potentially compromising the health and functionality of their mouth and smile. “If some people have a fear of the dentist, we

want them to understand they are not alone - and that there is help. With conscious sedation, we help individuals suffering from severe dental phobia receive the care they need.”

But what is conscious sedation? Dr Folla spells it out, saying: “This form of dentistry allows you to enter a state of relaxation while staying awake during the procedure. “Although you won’t feel any pain, you’ll be able to respond to your dentist’s questions and commands.! He adds: “It is important to explain that sedative dentistry is also very helpful for people who have a low tolerance for pain, have very sensitive teeth, can’t sit still in the dentist’s chair or need a large amount of dental work done at once.” Dental implants are more common today, but why should we consider them? Dr Folla says: “It is important to know that a tooth loss can affect people at any point in their lives. If you have suffered from tooth loss or damage, it is highly likely you are an appropriate candidate

for dental implants. “Compared with other conventional treatments, like dentures, bridges and crowns, dental implants are more successful and last much longer. “Dental implants are a simple, secure and permanent solution to substitute missing teeth by replacing the natural root of a lost tooth or teeth with a titanium implant, upon which new crowns and bridgeworks can be carefully placed. “Remember, placing an implant is often easier than taking a tooth out and is usually done using a simple local anaesthetic. “You will not feel any pain at the time but, just like after an extraction, you may feel some discomfort during the week after the surgery.” Clinica Dental Tenerife Sur can be found in Fairway Village, on Golf del Sur. Telephone 922 737 838 for more information, or if you want an appointment.

A Blob on the landscape OKAY, it’s not exactly a big yawn for this little kitten we’ve affectionately called Blob. But when you’re just a week old, life is really tiring.

He is the first of this year’s intake of kittens to be found on the streets. The road ahead for him is long, and many at this age don’t make it, but Blob is doing well so far and we have high hopes for him. You can follow his progress on our facebook page www.facebook. com/cats.welfare.9/. Many people know that Cats Welfare neuter stray-cat populations, but did you also know that we rehomed more than 140 abandoned cats and kittens last year to families both here and in Germany.

This is an important part of our work and, if you would like to adopt a cat or kitten, keep an eye on our web-page www.cats-welfare-tenerife.com/pets. It is updated daily with new arrivals, but if you don’t see what you are looking for, we keep a waiting list. So please message with your specific requirements and we will be happy to add

come disorientated and lost. A microchip helps, though, only if a cat found is taken to a vet, who can check. As there are so many stray cats in Tenerife, it can be hard for people to distinguish between a stray and a beloved pet which is lost. And that’s why we also recommend that every owner ensures his/her cat has a collar, with the owner’s phone number on a tag. It may not appreciate a collar at first, but, with patience, you can teach your cat to accept it. A collar should be tight enough to stop it pulling over the cat’s head, but loose enough for you to fit two fingers between the collar and its neck. You can introduce a collar to your cat during a calm time, or just before feeding time - using food as a reward. If you try to put a col-

lar on when it’s already stressed, you could have problems. We always recommend safety, breakaway collars in case it gets snagged on something. The safety/security of your cat is paramount and collars are just a few euros each. Spring cleaning If you’re having a Spring clear-out and have good quality/condition items to donate, please consider donating them to our charity shop. Smaller items can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind HiperDino). It is open seven days a week, between 10am6pm (Saturdays 11am4pm), and If you don’t have transport, or have bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, who will arrange collection.

Such barbaric cruelty SOMETIMES, it’s hard to find words to describe the barbaric cruelty that human beings can inflict on defenceless animals.

Last week, a Doberman dog was collected from the streets of Arona in a bad condition, having had her tail hacked off. She was covered in sores and fleas, had heartworm and was in an extremely dis-

tressed state. We are trying to find her previous owner, so we can take action for inflicting so much needless suffering. She is such a sweet dog, and we hope that, once she is fully recovered, we can find her a special home. On a lighter - and more positive - note, we are continuing our educational programme, and more and more schools and colleges are visiting us. In fact, over 300 children have passed through our gates in the

last week. We aim to educate the children to better understand animals in the hope that, in years to come, animal cruelty and abandonment will be much less rife on the Island. Diving deep Some of our volunteers are from the Abadas diving academy, and they have been out in force, donating muchappreciated dog food. Mary Irvine and her friend are still busy with their knitting-needles, making much-needed,

Give Tejita your trust TEJITA was first spotted straying in Los Abrigos about six months ago, and the podenco was later seen a couple of kilometres up the coast at La Mareta.

Recently, she moved a bit further to the new commercial centre at Sotavento, Playa La Tejita, where locals were worried about this frightened dog, who could be seen at sunrise and sunset, looking for food and water. This was left out for her, and she was soon caught in one of our traps by an animal-lover. Tejita spent some days in the vets, being checked over, and was able to rest and begin to trust humans again, with the help of Pilar, vet nurse at Hospivet Sur and from the charitable association 4 Pa-

tas (4 Paws). This poor dog now needs a home, either short-term or, preferably, on a permanent basis. The podenco is a fantastic breed but, sadly, they get a raw deal from the hunting community, who quite often dump them, or even throw them from moving cars if they are not good rabbit-hunters. Tejita is not even two years old, so maybe she just didn’t make the grade and was cast out. Can you give her a reason to trust humans? Call Sue for more information on 629 388 102. Find the Easter Eggs Following last year´s success, we are doing it all again tonight (Good Friday) on San Blas Top Square, where, from 8pm. kids can seek and find Easter Eggs, There will also be a night of entertainment, hosted by Suzy q, with guests Nik Page, Tanya Tevaro, Ady Evans, Steve Delsey, Nigel Walk-

er’s Ska Show, Colin Stevens comedy-drag show, Michaela Jay and Debbie Diamond. We also have a signed football from in-form CD Tenerife to auction, so come on down and enjoy the night. Our Charity Shops There are plenty of bargains for all, so have a good root around at any of our three shops: *San Eugenio, opposite Hotel La Nina, at las Carabelas near Amandas Bar. Open MondaySaturday (10am-4pm) *Los Cristianos, Calle Revron, near Thistle and Dragon Bar and playpark. Open daily (10am-4pm) *Golf del Sur, Golf Park, just before the lottery kiosk. Open Monday-Friday (10amto 6pm), Saturday (10am-4pm), Sunday (10.30am-3.30pm) Save them for us! Don’t throw things away! Call 629 388 102 and we’ll sell your unwanted items to help the dogs.

woolly jackets for when the dogs travel to cooler countries. We would like to say a big thank-you for your continued help and support, all of which is vital to the welfare of the dogs. Grateful thanks We are so thankful for all the support we receive from our many volunteers and supporters of all nationalities. You help us in so many

ways … adoptions, dogwalking, donations of bedding, sheets and towels, and even flying to Germany with them, on their way to new homes. You also help to ease the pain and suffering of some of the many strays, who may have endured years of physical, and mental, abuse. Please call us on 922 778 630 if you can help in any way, or visit on Mon-

day, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays (1-4pm).

Gaffers retain crown

THE fat lady cleared her throat and belted out Gaffers A to herald their crowning as Division One champions of the Direct Telecom Pool League for a second straight season.

They needed just one point on Tuesday night at former double-winners Palms A to secure the title, and the Gods were certainly with them. Palms were on a mission and playing well, but it wasn’t to be their night. Firstly JT, with an in-off black, then Chris with a black in a million-to-one chance, gifted Gaffers early frames. Palms never recovered and, despite putting up a real fight, it was fitting that captain Neil took the frame which won the title. They were worthy winners and it will take a fine side to deny them a hat trick of titles. This just left the runners-up race to be decided and, after some interesting results, we actually have the final top spots decided with one week remaining. After a slow start, Tenerife Hammers A have come up on the rails to nick the cov-

eted second spot. A home tie against Bluebell A saw them pick up the points they needed to ensure the runners-up trophy. It was Bluebell A’s final game of the season, and they are left to sweat now on next week’s results with regards to relegation. The tussle for second could have rumbled on into the final game of the season but Dreamers A, who have been so strong, faltered at the last hurdle. They were at Rewind A, who they had beaten at home just a few days before in a catch-up game. So the away side were confident of keeping the pressure on Hammers A, but Rewind had different ideas. They raced into a 3-1 lead, but were then pegged back in the second session as Dreamers found a little form. And when Mark A beat Lee, the away team were back in the match at 5-4. But up stepped Danny, John and Wilf and it was all over, the points going to Rewind, with Dreamers having to to settle for third place. Treehouse A, despite dropping off the pace in recent weeks, had just about done enough to cement a fourth-place finish. They travelled to Terrace Bantams, who were still looking over their shoulders at the relegation fight. But Bantams seemed

to have saved their best form for the run-in and took a 3-1 lead, with Marky P 7-balling Scott in an early frame. There was some excellent pool from both teams, but Bantams had the wind behind them and were soon 6-2 ahead. Paul got one back for Treehouse, but Marky P rounded off a superb night by beating Jay for the three points that ensured Division One pool for Bantams next season. Palms B, who have enjoyed their season, secured fifth spot after a trip to Los Abrigos to face Phoenix Potters.

It was honours even after the first four frames, but Palms edged ahead in the second session. Wayne then won his third of the night to secure a point for the Palms and they needed one more for the win. But Potters staged a magnificent fight-back, with Top Gun, Gary and Eric winning frames to earn a good draw. At times in this league, the bar bragging rights are always a must, and The Phoenix have given themselves a chance of sneaking past Potters after a good performance in Silencio against Exiles A. It is always a tough place to visit and Exiles, who have had a fine season, are looking to finish in the top half of the table. But The Phoenix proved too strong and took a welcome three points. Another team looking for important points are Terrace Roosters, who are in a relegation battle. They had a tough fixture at Gaffers B, and it looked as though it would to be a disappointing night

for Fin and the boys as the home side raced into a 5-2 lead. But Roosters got themselves back in the game and actually led 6-5. The win was a step too far, though, and Wilson took the final frame to salvage a draw for Gaffers B … but the point might just be enough to save Roosters! It is still a three-horse title race in Division Two and the games inhand will be a deciding factor. After a brilliant season, Picasso’s A have hit the top spot with just one week to go. They were at Bluebell B and made a great start, racing into a 6-0 lead. The home side rallied and took a frame, but Wayne won the next one for Picasso’s and it was gameover as they moved to the top. Picasso’s are now on 63 points, with two games left to play, and just one point behind them are Rewind Rewired, who are on 62 and also with two remaining, so neither team can afford to slip up. However, it is still out of their hands because third-placed Crown B, on 60 points, have two more games than them left to play. But the pressure is on

Crown B, assuming Picasso’s and Rewind win both their matches. Crown need three wins and a draw from their final fixtures, so it’s is going to be a close-run contest. But it’s likely they will have beaten Sabores last night (Thursday). Treehouse B, still hoping to creep into the top five, will have to play better than they did against Hoppy’s B. The visitors took a 3-1 lead and were good for it. But Treehouse fought back and took the second session by the same score to be level at 4-4. Hoppy’s were not done, though, and Debbie took her second frame to ease them in front, only to see Ben take the next frame to even it out again. But Hoppy’s dug deep, with Terry and the Roly playing good frames to gain a win for the visitors. It was family night down in El Medano as Nick and Harley lined up for Tenerife Pool Tables against Lorraine and Sabores, wife and mother respectively! The match was close, but determined TPT just had the edge, dragging themselves over the line. I wonder what forfeit Nick has in store for Lorraine this time!

Facu’s five-star show Ñandu 40 Las Palmas 0

AFTER their victorious trip to Vallodolid, Ñandu returned to league action in Adeje, against Gran Canaria rivals Las Palmas.

The El Galeon ground drew a lot more spectators, and a great atmosphere prevailed in the build-up to kickoff. Las Palmas were a large, physical side, and the early encounters proved tough for both teams, neither of whom were willing to concede yards, with big hits coming from backs and forwards alike. Ñandu broke through in the seventh minute, with flanker Mel blasting his way over from a great scrum. Captain Jacob O converted and the home side began to settle. After a fierce exchange, Ñandu went further ahead when Facu P, the fantastic No.8, broke two tackles

to muscle over. Las Palmas kept pushing, using their big forwards to try to punch a hole in the Ñandu defence, to no avail. Facu P added another first-half try, converted by centre Gabri M, to give Ñandu a 19-0 halftime advantage. Las Palmas regrouped well and started the second half strong, with Ñandu having to dig deep to keep the

visitors in check. But Ñandu’s fitness soon started to show and, with great link play by superb scrum-half Mateo P, the forwards and backs began to flow. Backed by a vocal crowd, Ñandu began to pull away, Facu P adding three more tries - taking his total to five - all converted by the consistent boot of Jacob O. Nandu’s next match

is on Saturday (2nd April) at Tenerife Top Training (T3), La Caleta, against El Medano rivals The Boatmen, kick-off at 1pm. The following week, the boys are back at El Galeon against Fuerteventura’s Mahoh RC. Spectators are more than welcome, and if you are interested in getting involved in some capacity, contact Paul on 664 361 058.

Youngsters can point way CD Tenerife 0 Real Zaragoza 0

By Roscoe WITH the match live on national TV, and an 11am kick-off, the powers that be will be delighted with a near 11,000 crowd for last Sunday’s draw with Real Zaragoza.

And while fair-weather fans might not have been on the edge of the seat, true fans will be delighted with what

they saw. This was a match Tenerife could have easily won - and they would have with a bit more composure in front of goal. The hosts were solid, there were no real scares at the back and again, CDT’s recent signings pulled their weight, while there is genuine competition for places in the side. It´s five unbeaten and the signs are that, with a bit of luck, the play-offs are a realistic goal. What was interesting was the contrast in the way manager Jose Marti set up the side. At the back, it was the experi-

enced German alongside Carlos Ruiz, with young pup Jorge on the bench. You could see the reasoning against a side of well-seasoned operators. But in attack, it was all about youth - pace and promise. Nano, Omar and later, Cristo, have all had better matches this season. However, there is nothing wrong in trying it in a match like this. How much would Real have really known about them before kickoff? It was a shrewd move by Marti, who is really starting to impress in

his first managerial role. There are still a dozen games to go, and a fivepoint gap to those playoff places. And had the league started at Christmas, Tenerife would be in the top three! The next test is a toughie this weekend at Osasuna, who are poor on the road but decent at home. These sides have had some humdingers over the years, and there is no reason to feel this will not be another tasty encounter. And, of course, it’s another match against Tenerife legend Nino, who is still going strong at 35.

Oasis Fm Fantasy League

Excitement

hits the spot

THE Premier League is probably not the best from a technical point of view … but in terms of excitement, it can’t be beaten.

Last weekend’s round of matches provided us with plenty of entertainment and, for those shrewd managers in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League, it was also high-scoring. There were some good results for clubs battling for position within the league, and the point-scoring team of the week reflected this as we saw Norwich, Spurs and Southampton contribute two players each. The rest came from Man Utd, who again provided the keeper, plus Swansea, Arsenal, Chelsea and Stoke. There was no change at the top of the Oasis Fm League because the leading six remained exactly as they were. So, again, we can take a look at other positions. The highest-placed female manager is Elodie Townsend and her Deedee’s Hotspurs team and, thanks to a good-point scoring week, she has moved up to seventh. There is a family fight taking place not too far down the league: Lynn Stringer is in 30th place with 1,614 points, and right behind her, in 31st position, is

Dave Stringer on 1,612 points. Bragging rights will be everything to whoever wins that battle! There’s another battle raging at Oasis Fm Towers, where Chris Elkington is currently leading the way in 16th spot. But Roscoe has crept up to 17th and is level on points, and there are some big weeks coming up for those two. Adi Benson has not fared so well because he’s way back in 49th place - and 94 points behind! The gap is not that insurmountable, but it will take a big effort to bridge it. John Zammit is again in the Wooden Spoon position, over 200 points adrift. Did he get the steaks in last season, I wonder? Team of the week belongs to Eamon Farrell, who manages Walking in Memphis. He turned in a great performance with 92 points, and his whole team were consistent scorers. His stand-outs, though, were Bellerin (12 points) and his captain, Harry Kane with 32. International weekend is coming up, so make sure you check your team next week in case of injuries, or returning players.

Liverpool in Tenerife! It’s the last international break before the end of the football season and all over Europe teams have been setting up training camps.

Liverpool arrived in the south of Tenerife on Monday and they have been enjoying their warm weather training sessions at Tenerife Top Training in La Caleta this week. Most of the first team squad are on international duty and manager Jürgen Klopp has brought over the fringe first team players and a few up and coming kids for the Tenerife trip. Among the players who trained were Kolo Toure, Jon Flanagan, Jose Enrique and Steven Caulker while Danny Ings, who is still recovering from a mayor knee injury travelled but didn’t train.
