Adeje Mall opens soon Continued from front The finishing touches are being put in place and the owner, Amid Achi, has confirmed that the doors will open on 30th June. The new shopping centre will create 350 new jobs, and Achi has confirmed that some big names will be featured in the stores. When the Mall finally opens, it will close the door on nine years of neglect. For years, the land was a white elephant as owners la Sociedad de Desarrollo - 51% owned by a private company, headed by Juan Jose Sanchez Bacallado, and 49% owned by Adeje Town Hall - couldn’t agree on a way forward. After years of problems, a new owner was sought, and one of the first phone calls was to Achi’s office. The local entrepreneur had recently opened Siam Mall, and he swiftly agreed a purchase price of 20 million euros.
Achi, promising to pour another 20m into the project, had a vision for the Mall, which would see more jobs, more business and a place of which the area could be proud. Talks with the selling bank dragged on, and only midway through last year was everything finally signed off. The 20m euros, which needed to be invested swiftly, became 25m … and that could even become 30m euros. But
the new owner is satisfied with the outcome. The Mall occupies around 16,000sq/m, with nearly 800 parking spaces. And this week, Achi confirmed that there will be a supermarket covering 2,500sq/m. As for the retail shops, they are “all awarded and there is a nice mix, including some outlets”. Companies, he said, “will be selling products at a good price to
attract people from all over the Island with bargain brands”. Among the shops attracted there will be a Cortefiel, Springfield, Women’s Secret and a Pedro del Hierro boutique. There will also be a large Punto Roma shop, while Skandi giants JYSK’s first “Bed, Bath and Home” store in Tenerife will be opened at El Galeon. This, according to Achi, “is one of the highlights”.
Sport Zone has signed up, as has quality shoe specialists Villafranca. There will also be a Party Fiesta store ,and pet store chain Koala will cater for animal lovers. The Mall will have around 50 shops, along with leisure facilities, cafes, bars and restaurants. The idea, says Achi, is for the Mall to be a “friendly and open place”. With little more than two months until its opening, most of the areas are rented and being prepared. It is understood that all locals will be filled and open when the ribbon is cut. Achi said: “There will not be any repeat shops. Also, we plan to have a hairdressers, a children’s clothing store and a haberdashery shop. I want this Mall to bring together a wide range of interests. “I have a lot of confidence in this offering. I believe it will be original and different from the rest. I’m confident
the public will respond well to what we have built, and to what we are trying to achieve here.” Amid Achi rarely fails. His Numero 1 clothes stores made him a fortune, and the Syrian-born 67-year-old was named 2015 Businessperson of the Year by Tenerife’s Chamber of Commerce. He owns 38% of CD Tenerife, has shares in 15 shopping malls and has franchised over 200 shops. Achi is the main Canary Islands’ contact for many African countries. He has business interests in Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon, Gambia, Mauritania, Mali, and he recently opened a store in Benin, West Africa. Amid says: “I think I’ll never retire, because without business I feel empty. I have worked all my life. I come from a humble family in a tiny village, and I always remember what my roots are.”

Swim pool refurb will have to wait
THE 1.5 million-euro refurbishment of Santa Cruz municipal swimming pool ‘Acidalio Lorenzo’, has been put back until the end of the month. Although the works contract has been awarded, the company carrying out the work must “correct” a part of the documentation to enable it to begin the work legally. The contract was announced in June last year, and work was scheduled to start this February or March. Now, though, it won’t
get under way before 1st May, and the upgrades will take around five months to complete. José Alberto Diaz-Estebanez, the councillor in charge, said he hoped the firm would ensure the work is now done on time. He added: “We want this open as soon as possible as we normally use the pool for lots of activities each summer. “And thousands of children in the capital will be disappointed if they cannot swim in the pool this summer.”
Subsidies’ driving force THE Spanish Government has agreed to public transport subsidies totalling nearly 250 million euros, of which Madrid will receive 126m, Barcelona 98m and the Canary Islands 25m. It is part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to “offer a quality public transport service throughout the country”. The budget was approved by Ministers
this week under provisions of the General State Budget Act for 2016. Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, Acting Government Vice-President, said the subsidies were a continuation of those granted in previous years. She added: “They correspond to the Government’s commitment to improve the quality of public passenger services.”
Repsol’s oil hunt quickly drying up E N R I Q U E Hernández Bento, the Spanish Government’s Canary Islands delegate, has confirmed that Repsol’s exploration period in search for oil is running out.
The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism has confirmed that the drilling in waters just off the Canary Islands, which started on 21st March, will finish soon. Bento said: “We have already said that by the end of April, the research permit expires. The law states that when a permission to investigate on hydrocarbons is granted, that permission given is for a set period of time. “Once that period is met, the permission expires. We gave them a period of 60 days from 1st March.” He added, in statements to the Press, that Repsol also has to show
transparency and documentation on what is and has been done. Bento is keen to ensure that there are no problems from an environmental or legal standpoint. It is believed that Repsol invested a minimum of 40 million euros on the project and Bento said: “This is widely believed to cover the logistics, and all the expenses that resulted in the logistic base installed in the port of Las Palmas. They have conducted at least two surveys.” Bento is keen to make sure that the company has not done any illegal explorations because, he feels: “The theme on oil in the Canaries ended long ago, when Repsol said it had not found any hydrocarbon.”

Bacon & butlers, Spanish nudists? Sorry, can’t help! CONFUSED telephone callers in the past year have relied on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to advise them on bizarre issues.
They range from where to buy English bacon in Europe, how to recruit a butler in Lebanon and how to avoid nudists in southern Spain. The FCO has released these details, and more, as a reminder to Brits overseas that they should seek its services for genuine emergencies only. The calls included: *A man planning to move to Spain who was worried he would encounter nudists walking through the streets *A homesick expat asking where he could buy English bacon *A lady in Lebanon looking for help to recruit an English butler *A holidaymaker trying to find Travel Advice for a visit to Coventry *A European film-maker looking for an English pensioner to take part in his latest production *A woman who was disappointed the British Embassy had not sent someone to give her a tour of St. Petersburg on her arrival in Russia *A man asking for assistance to get illegal employment in Singapore *A mother asking for the contact details of a young British YouTuber, as her son was a fan of his Minecraft videos *A confused businessman looking for infor-
mation on the construction of plug sockets *A man in South Korea asking what he could do with his old pound notes James Duddridge, Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister, said: “Our consular staff are a helpful bunch, and they do an amazing job, helping out Brits in trouble around the world. “But it is important that people remember they are there to help with genuine emergencies, and not as an alternative to Directory Enquiries. “Every minute they spend handling a call requesting advice on butlers or nudists is time taken away from dealing with life-anddeath cases, so I urge the public to think before picking up the phone.” Latest FCO figures show that over the last year, nearly half-a-million calls were made to its consular service, which provides emergency help to Britons in trouble overseas. The vast majority were from people with
genuine requests, and the FCO assisted with numerous cases, including 3,250 Brits who were hospitalised, 4,770 arrested, and the families of 3,670 who died overseas. In addition, almost 38,000 replacement travel documents were issued. British residents in Spain made more than 13,000 telephone enquiries in the past year, of which a quarter could have been resolved if callers had first searched www.gov. uk. The most frequent topics - for which there is plenty of information online - included applying for a British passport, getting UK documents legalised, and registering a birth, death or marriage In addition, nearly 2,000 of the total calls were, inappropriately, seeking “lifestyle” advice, with questions sometimes similar to the more bizarre examples received worldwide. FCO staff can support Brits abroad in many ways, including arrang-

ing visits to vulnerable people in hospital or in prison, advising on how to transfer money and helping those in crisis situations. However, recent research has revealed that 74% of Brits believe, wrongly, that the FCO can get them out of jail if they are arrested. Some 22% think the FCO can arrange for them to get home if they lose their ticket, and 15% presume the FCO will lend them money if theirs is lost or stolen. Kelvin Green, Head of the FCO’s Global Contact Centres, said: “We receive thousands of calls a year, and do all we can to help people who find themselves in difficulty abroad. “But we cannot help people make travel arrangements or lifestyle plans, lend them money or pay medical and other bills for them. He added: “I would urge people to prepare well before they travel, making sure they have valid travel documents and insurance.”

not that Candelaria hospital We’re poor after all! hits the big Five O THE Canaries have the highest unemployment rate, the lowest wages - and the most - expensive shopping basket in Spain.
THE Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, or Candelaria hospital as it is known, turned 50 over last weekend, and what a worthy milestone.
It opened on 1st April 1966, originally for births and non-essential surgical procedures. But the demand for medical assistance boomed as the population exploded and today, it boasts world-class facilities.
There was a major expansion programme in the early Seventies, which led to the opening of the emergency department. New buildings housed an improved maternity centre, while the School of Nursing opened its doors in 1973. Also in this decade, the hospital added a Rehabilitation and Traumatology centre, and in 1980, the main building was upgraded, with interior corridors that linked all the extra buildings. Four years later, after some political changes, the transfer of power for Candelaria switched
from Spain’s National Institute of Health in Spain to the Canarian Health Service, when it became sanctioned by the Canary Islands’ Law on Health. This political momentum translated into a new phase of expansion and improvements. Another building swiftly popped up, the School of Nursing was upgraded and, in 2001, another new building was constructed. The hospital is now a leader in Spain regarding transplants and has grown from just over 100 professionals in 1966 to today’s workforce of nearly 4,500.
Farewell to siestas? EMPLOYEES in Spain will lose their lengthy lunch-time siestas if a proposal by acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is adopted to bring the country’s working days into line with those in the rest of Europe.
Rajoy, leader of Spain’s PP, the caretaker government, has put forward legislation that would end today’s traditional working times, which feature threehour lunch-breaks.
Under his proposed laws, Spanish workers would clock off at 6pm - some two hours earlier than now. Rajoy told a party conference that he hoped to win the support of other parties, unions and business leaders to change the working day, to ensure his proposal got the green light. There would be exemptions to the legislation, naturally, such as companies who employ shift-workers. Today, Spain’s employees are normally at their place of work - in the office or store, on the building site or on the road - from 9am to 8pm, with two to three hours off at lunchtime for the
famous siesta. That shouldn’t be a problem because quite a number have complained that the long lunch-break drags out their working day. And many favour the shorter days and shorter breaks to which most Western Europe are accustomed. It is thought that Rajoy’s proposal could have been promoted with a ploy to winning votes in the country’s new, upcoming elections in June. It is not the first radical proposal he has put forward. He has also suggested changing Spain’s time zone to bring it into line with Portugal and the UK.
This includes doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, midwives, occupational therapists, technical specialists, nursing assistants, administrative staff, engineering staff, maintenance, orderlies and other human resources.
We are also 1,000 miles from the mainland, which puts us at a disadvantage, compared with other, autonomous communities. Yet the future is rather bright for the Islands. An Outlook report on Spain, produced by KPMG, concludes that 69% of Canaries respondents believe that the economic situation is “better - or much better - than it was a year ago”. The report reflects the responses of more than 1,300 entrepreneurs, owners and managers, of whom, 30% said the ongoing political uncertainty was currently the main threat to the Spanish economy. Geo-political tensions - and the weakening
economy in the eurozone - worried 20% of those questioned as being the “most-likely” economic threat to the country. These results demonstrate the Spanish companies’ concern of how political decisions can affect the economic situation of the country, and the worsening situation in Europe, which is its largest trading partner. Traditional worries like the exchange rate volatility, the cost of raw materials and the oil price - all popular concerns last year - are not as alarming this time around. Another issue addressed by the report was the demands of employers to their regional government. In the Canary Islands, 27% of employers have asked for administrative simplification, 22% for improvement in education and training, and 23% want a greater promotion of innovation.

Armeñime roundabout will end the frustration
Carnival any ideas? THIS year’s Santa Cruz Carnival was universally judged to have been one of the best in recent years. So organisers are keen to maintain the standard for 2017.
However, they need help. Since 1987 the Carnival in Santa Cruz has always had a theme - and the next one could be your idea! Organisers will ask the public to come up with some ideas for the theme. They will select the most original, and then set up a public vote.
Gladis de Leon, in charge of organising the event for the first time this year, was delighted with her first effort. “Yes, there are many ways to improve for future editions and nothing is perfect,” she said. “But this year’s was great! It has only been 50 days since we completed the carnival. And, even though we have the May Festival ahead, Carnival 2017 is already in our minds. “This carnival was my first year and everything I could have done was done. There are things that worked, and we will now talk and improve. But overall, we are very satisfied.”
“WE have taken another important step towards the construction of the new Armeñime roundabout”, said Adeje Cllr Carmen Rosa González Cabrera this week.
Her comment followed the official signing-over to Adeje Council of the land where the infrastructure will be built. The Cabildo owned the land, and Ofelia Man-
jón, Roads and Lands Director, was also present. Councillor González Cabrera added: “We are meeting a long-standing requirement, not just of the residents of Armeñime but of everyone who uses this road - a road that is congested daily. “We have been long aware of this problem and have been urging the Cabildo, in this case the relevant authority, to tackle it.” The tender for the work will be requested and decided in as short

a time as possible, she pledged. The TF-47, one of the busiest roads on the Island, carries about 21,000 cars daily - at least 13,500 of which are making longer journeys, from San Juan or Alcalá to Guía de Isora or Santiago del Teide. And it is at the point where the traffic passes Armeñime that tailbacks are a common feature, given the intersection and entrance/ exit to the village. In recent years, there have also been a grow-
Budget playing it by the book! THE Canary Islands Government has found money in the budget to help lower-income families - around 24 million euros, in fact!
Over the next three academic years, textbooks will be free to all families earning less than 15,650 euros a year.
THERE is more good news on the jobs front in Spain because a combination of an early Easter and strong tourism figures, led to a big drop in the numbers of unemployed.
The jobless tally in March stood at 242,888 people in the Canary Islands - a 5.44% drop over the corresponding month last year, adding up to 13,963. Unemployment fell
in the archipelago by 0.31% in March, against the February figure, representing a fall of 744 people. Also, the number of unemployed registered with the Public
Employment Services fell by 58,216 people in March. That was 1.4% less than the previous month and left an overall jobless total of 4,094,770 across Spain.
ing number of accidents involving pedestrians and those trying to access the road to El Puertito. The fact that this is a direct route, plus a link between Adeje and Los Gigantes, and other tourist destinations, adds to its importance. And with future projects for El Puertito and the port of Fonsalía, it will be eventually prove to be even more vital. Once work begins, it is scheduled to take between 8-12 months.
The announcement was made by Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo. There has been pressure recently to try to find some ways of easing the financial burden on parents, and Clavijo said: “The measure will have a strong impact on the pockets of families. “It will also improve the education of our youth, guaranteeing them the means to develop their talent.”

Just a joke… IT’S fair to say that it has been an interesting week! Never in a million years did I think our April Fool’s front-page story would create the buzz it did. Sociologists must think it’s Christmas.
I´m still a little puzzled as to how so many people believed the story to be true. We left a lot of breadcrumbs. Broma? That’s Spanish for a Joke. We quoted Joseph King... Jo King. Plus the 01-04 references, the website and then there was the swap of Tenerife for Gibraltar. Anyway, it was just an April Fool’s gag. Every paper in the western world carried one. Don´t worry, us Brits are not going to be kicked out of Tenerife. In fact, I cannot for the life of me see how the LEAVE vote are going to get anywhere near the 50.00001% of the vote they need. However, what the last week has done is raise a very important issue. As Elaine
Robertson points out in her letter on this page, a lot of people have their head in the sand over the EU question. This vote is about so much more than immigrants, pensions, the exchange-rate and so called border controls. The concerns of those people taken in by our April Fool joke are very real. And we should be concerned by what a “Leave” vote would mean. Speak to someone from a non-EU country. Ask an Argentinean to tell you how hard it is to work here. Or listen to Americans when they tell you about all the hoops they have to jump through to be able to live here. If you leave the EU, you leave the EU! Remember the best jokes have a large element of truth about them, and that is the reason why we went for the topic we did for an April Fool’s gag. For those who are still concerned after last week’s front page, take a breath. You are leaving Tenerife only if YOU want to leave. Anyway…

Dear Editor, I do understand that many ex-pat Brits, who have been living with their heads firmly in the sand ever since the referendum on the UK’s continued membership of the E.U. was announced, will have been upset by the spectres raised in your article. And having (probably) paid no attention to the real issues and possible (if not probable) outcomes of an “Exit” vote, they would not have been able to spot the spoofs. I have been trying to “bang the drum” for several months about the possible adverse effects of an “Exit” vote on the lives of expat Brits living here and elsewhere in the EU - specifically the likely detrimental effect on pensioners, but I don’t seem to have got the point home. Most people seem to think that “it” (an exit vote) won’t happen: or if it does, we shall still be entitled to all the benefits we enjoy now, completely ignoring the little matter that most of these benefits come directly from EU membership! If your “spoof” article caused a few people to pause in the middle of their three-euro, Full English and/or their one-euro pint of lager, to think about life in a post-EU Tenerife, and even to wonder how easy it might be to renew Residencias as a non-EU citizen, or consider how long they might have to wait for their visiting relatives to get through the Non-EU Immigration Channel at TFS, or how much their entry visa might have cost them, then it was “job well done”! Even better if it spurs more people into registering to vote in the Referendum and then vote to remain in the EU, of course! To all the people who think they are powerless to do anything, remember that there are approx 1.3 million ex-pat Brits living in the EU. If all those entitled to vote do so, and vote to stay in, we might tip the scale in favour of continued EU Membership! Elaine Robertson
Parking now resolved for new tram-line
TENERIFE Cabildo has been able to put a bit more meat on the bone that is the planned Line 2 of the Metropolitan Tram System in the North.
The extension of the tram-line, from Tíncer to La Gallega, through the Avenida of Los Majuelos, will not cause a shortage of parking spaces in the area, despite claims to the contrary. The Cabildo says that only 511 of the 2,600 existing spaces will be eliminated in the 2.5km route. In addition, Development Director Miguel Becerra said the local Council will ask Santa Cruz Town Hall to allow two municipal lots for the area, which will convert waste-land into parking lots to counterbalance the numbers. A study into the Avenida de Los Majuelos parking shows that 2,089 spaces will remain in the area, which will be more than enough because, as Becerra
says: “At present these are not used, even at rush-hour. “Even so, citizens who like to park in this area will still be able to do so. Our intention is that we regenerate some vacant plots.” In addition, in relation to the commercial sector, Becerra said: “We will have compensatory measures in place. And we have a great commitment to revitalising this area. The new tram-line will reduce traffic, increase public mobility and will help energise the area.” However, Becerra said Santa Cruz Council has not set anything in stone just yet. “We say to all those in the neighbourhoods - the commercial sector and collective neighbourhoods where the tram will pass (El Sobradillo, Barranco Grande and La Gallega) - that we will listen to their suggestions and proposals. “And, although the drafting of the construction project is out to tender, we will consider the opinions of the neighbourhood, of course.”

‘Bomb-hoax’ trio booths nabbed by police Disconnected IT’S bad news for Superman because his changing room of choice is now becoming a thing of the past.
In this modern world, with so much technology, mobile devices, wifi and even whatsapp, the trusty phone booth is virtually redundant That said, 88% of Spaniards say that in their lifetime, they have used a booth, according to Eurobarometer 2014. However, there are 25,820 booths in Spain only, compared with 2000 when there were 108,899 according to Telefonica data. And the decline is now growing apace. In the past three years, a third of the booths have been taken out of service, because of low usage and the high degree of vandalism, which makes maintenance extremely costly. In 2012, the net cost of these booths was 400,000 euros in 2013 - a figure which exceeded 1.2m euros last year. That is why the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism instructed the National Commission Markets and Com-
petition (CNMC) to report and analyse this situation. The General Telecommunications Law in Spain says that all citizens must have access to telecommunications services, regardless of their geographic location. Today, Telefónica, the operator responsible for providing the phonebooth service, meets the requirements in the royal decree of 2011, which states that the smallest municipalities (up to 1,000 inhabitants) must have a booth, as well as at least one phone booth for every 3,000 inhabitants. The Spanish cities with the most booths, according to Telefonica, are central Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga, Cadiz, Las Palmas and Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, which all have over 1,000 units. The report could agree on the what happened in France, which has removed phone booths from all streets. There were 75,000 booths in 2014 but after the supplier, Orange, revealed that each booth ran at a loss of over 3,000 euros a year, they were scrapped!
SPANISH police have arrested three people on suspicion of making a bomb-hoax call which caused a plane to fly back to Madrid airport, escorted by an airforce fighter jet.
The incident happened last December, when Spanish airport operator AENA ordered the return of a Brazilian TAM airlines plane, 90 minutes into its flight to Sao Paulo. There were 315 passengers and 16 crew members on board, and police said in a statement that they had received a call from a man claiming a bomb was on board.
The man, who spoke Spanish with an Arabic accent, mentioned the flight and then could be heard saying, “Today people will die”, and “Allahu Akbar” - an Islamic phrase meaning “God is Great”. The passengers were
swiftly evacuated from the plane and, mercifully, police carried out a fruitless search of the aircraft. A police probe determined that the call had been made from a public pay phone in the town of Cuenca, in cen-
tral Spain. And officers detained two men and a woman they believe are responsible for the call. The trio had ties to a Brazilian woman on board the plane, who had been denied entry into Spain because of a Swiss court order, said the police statement, without giving further details. The suspects have been charged with causing public disorder, and they may also be held liable for the economic damage caused by the false alarm which, police said, was initially estimated at over 200,000 euros. The plane was escorted back to Madrid airport by a Spanish airforce fighter jet, and the runways were closed for an hour while police inspected the aircraft.
VOTING STALEMATE! SPAIN’S political parties are under intense pressure to reach a coalition Government deal because polls suggest a new election will not resolve the current deadlock.
A survey published on Sunday by the coun-
try’s leading newspaper, El Pais, and another by online rival El Espanol, both suggest no party would obtain a majority and that negotiations would simply have to begin again. Politicians from all sides of Parliament have been locked in negotiations in an attempt to form a government since the 20th December election, when
the Government’s ruling PP party won - but without a clear majority. Since then, various attempts to form a ruling coalition have not come to fruition, leaving Mariano Rajoy’s party as an “acting” Government with its leader as “acting” Prime Minister after four years at the helm - for real! El Pais used pollster
Metroscopia, which questioned 1,200 adults by phone at the end of March, with a 2.9% margin of error. El Espanol published its own poll, interpreting data supplied by online survey company Netquest, which surveyed 1,002 adults online, during the last week of March, and says it has a 3.1% margin for error.
Panama Papers exposed, …and the knives are out SPANISH prosecutors have opened a moneylaundering probe after a huge pile of documents, known as the Panama Papers, are said to have exposed offshore financial dealings.
And the late father of British Prime Minister David Cameron is said to have been involved, albeit “legitimately”. The investigation follows the leaking of
more than 11.5 million documents from the files of law company Mossack Fonseca, based in the tax haven of Panama. They are said to reveal details of hundreds of thousands of clients, including those in Spain, the UK and the US. These clients include the family of Barcelona football superstar Lionel Messi, an aunt of Spain’s King Felipe VI, Pilar de Borbon, and Oscar-winning Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. Mossack Fonseca, a judicial source at the Na-
tional Court - Spain´s top criminal court - told AFP: “We have opened an investigation for money-laundering in relation to the law firm.” The scandal erupted last Sunday when media groups made public the results of a year-long, worldwide investigation into the huge piles of documents, which cover a period from 1977 until last December, exposing a tangle of offshore financial dealings by the elite. It comes at a time of mounting public concern in Spain over corruption scandals,
which have hit political parties, trade unions, footballers and even the royal family, during a period of sky-high unemployment and Government austerity measures. While offshore holdings can be legal, they can also be used to hide wealth. Spanish Justice Minister Rafael Catala said: “Having an offshore holding is not a crime. “What matters is knowing if these holdings in Panama, with Spanish shareholders or owners, are fulfilling their fiscal obligations.”

Zika ‘detectives’ are on full alert RECENT cases of people affected by the Zika virus in Spain have highlighted the importance of the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network.
This acts as a kind of detective service on infectious diseases, while hunting for new problems like zika, malaria, dengue flu - or even old acquaintances like ‘flu. These regional monitoring services (EDO) act as a barometer to discover the evolution of these infectious diseases. And, once recorded, the
experts get a better idea of the implications for the health of the general public. At the moment, Spain recognises 63 diseases - a total considered by experts to be “inadequate” in a global world, in which viruses, parasites and bacteria travel by plane and boat. Last year, the Canary Islands adapted its EDO to introduce into the Primary Care (PC) network, which was approved in early 2014 by the National Health System’s InterTerritorial Council. Subsequently, the corresponding regulatory change, which includes 60 common diseases throughout the national territory and just three
in our own archipelago (ciguatera food poisoning, other diarrhoea diseases and other meningitis strains) was published here. All of them are a worry to public health, although most are of a very low frequency. Data released this week by the Ministry of Health showed that flu in 2015 was again the main threat to the islands, with 43,554 cases reported - 15% more than the previous year. This upward trend was also detected in whooping cough and chickenpox, mostly in children. In fact, 10,394 cases were recorded over the last two years, which
was double the totals in 2012 and 2013. This occurred because of the lack of chickenpox vaccination, a measure recently revoked by Alfonso Alonso, the Cabildo’s current Minister of Health. Along with these diseases, mosquito-borne diseases are those which most concern those responsible for the regional health department, although all cases declared so far were imported. Specifically, last year, there were 36 cases of malaria. In addition, 11 people suffered the chikungunya virus disease and there were three cases of dengue fever.

Cancer strikes hardest TUMOURS were the main cause of death in the Canary Islands in 2014, with 199.7 deaths per 100,000 population. This will come as no real surprise as cancer rates continue to grow. These deaths were followed by diseases of the circulatory system (164.7), respiratory problems (79.7), nervous system (32.9) and digestive system (27.7), according to a report by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Yet the Canaries recorded Spain’s second-lowest mortality rate of 676.5 deaths per 100,000 people, which exceeded the previous year’s total by 4.3%. The crude death rate in Spain rose by 1.7% in 2014, represent-
ing 852.1 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. In all, there was a total of 395,830 deaths (201,571 men and 194,259 women) - 5,411 more than in 2013. The main cause of death was the circulatory system diseases (117,393 people), followed by tumours (110,278); diseases of the respiratory system (43,841); pathologies of the nervous system and sense organs (23,394); digestive system diseases (19,385); mental and behavioural disorders (18,706); external causes of mortality (14,903); endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (13.013) and diseases of the genitourinary system (reproductive organs and the urinary system) (11,530).
Suicides reach peak T R A G I C A L LY, suicides in Spain reached a record high in 2014 - a 1% increase from the previous year - for the third consecutive year in a row.
The National Statistics Institute (INE) reported that 3,910 individuals took their own lives, which was twice as many as died in road accidents. It was also the highest number on record since 1980, when the INE began releasing this information. The INE also revealed that a total of 395,830 people died in Spain in 2014 - the latest year with available figures, and 5,411 more than in 2013. Of these, 96.2% died of natural causes. Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 1,873 traffic fatalities. The latter figure has been dropping since 2007, when the pointsbased driver’s licence was introduced in Spain. By comparison, suicides have been on the rise for decades. There were 1,652 recorded cases in 1980, 2,939 in 1990 and 3,393 in the year 2000.
Santiago Durán-Sindreu, a psychiatrist at Barcelona’s Sant Pau Hospital, who specialises in suicide cases, is concerned about this upward curve. “It looks like this trend is here to stay,” he said. “Whatever the reason - and saying that it’s the economic crisis is a very simplistic argument - the increase in cases is significant enough that public agencies should get to work on prevention programmes.” Spain, unlike countries such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Britain, does not have programmes of this nature, either at regional or national level. Durán-Sindreu says this omission could be down to cultural fac-
tors - “suicide continues to be a taboo subject at all levels” - and geographical ones as well: until recently, Mediterranean countries had low suicide rates. Only Catalonia has something akin to a suicide prevention programme. Código Riesgo Suicidio, introduced in late 2015, is a protocol by which health services get in touch with patients who have attempted suicide, rather than the other way around. The idea, said Durán-Sindreu, was that this would “force them to get treatment”. The data show that many more men than women ended their own lives: of the 3,910
recorded 2014 suicide cases, 2,938 were men and 972 women. Older people are also more prone to suicide, with a rate of 22.5 per 100,000
inhabitants in the 8589 age group, compared with the overall 8.42 average. “That is the age of loss: loss of autonomy
… new chronic diseases,” said Durán-Sindreu. “All these factors exacerbate depressive symptoms, which may lead to suicide.”

Alleged Jihadist sent back to US THE Spanish Government has given the goahead to extradite an alleged jihadist to the United States after four months.
Ali Charaf Damache was wanted by Washington for conspiring with a woman, known as “Jihad Jane”, to recruit people online for attacks in Europe and south Asia.
Damache, who holds both Algerian and Irish nationality, was detained in December in Barcelona. Officials in the US say Damache worked with Colleen LaRose a Pennsylvania woman who converted to Islam and took the name Jihad Jane - and others to create a “violent jihad organisation” with men and women from Europe and the US. LaRose is already behind bars. She was
jailed for 10 years in 2014 for plotting attacks, including the murder of Lars Vilks. The Swedish artist had survived several death threats since penning a cartoon portraying the Prophet Mohammed as a dog. American authorities say Damache and others recruited men online “to wage violent jihad in South Asia and Europe”, as well as women with passports, and the ability
to travel to and around Europe in support of their plots. Spain approved his extradition during its regular Cabinet meeting on Friday. Damache had refused to be extradited to the US, where he faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted. He had initially been detained in Ireland, where he was living, but a court there refused a US request to extradite him and he walked free.
Museum gang jailed for theft of artefacts A 14-MAN gang have each been jailed for up to nearly seven years, following a mammoth plot to steal Chinese artefacts, worth up to £57m, from British museums.
The gang were behind break-ins at Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum and Durham’s Oriental Museum in 2012, and they also attempted to take a rhino head from Norwich Castle Museum - it proved too heavy! In total, they stole 24 artefacts and as many as 18 have not recovered. Thirteen men were sentenced over Monday and Tuesday this week after three trials, which concluded with the gang and its associates
convicted of wide-ranging, criminal conspiracy to steal, with connections to Ireland, Europe and China. A 14th gang member, Robert Gilbert Smith, of Kent, was jailed for his part in the crime last year after pleading guilty. The seven jailed on Monday actually planned the raids, while six others, sentenced a day later, actually carried them out. Members of the same gang also bungled an attempted theft at Gorringes Auction House in Lewes, East Sussex, and organised the disposal of the stolen artefacts in what Judge Murray Creed said was “an extremely sophisticated conspiracy”. Jurors at Birmingham Crown Court heard the stolen exhibits were valued at around £17m, but detectives believe they might have fetched
£57m in the “booming” Chinese auction market. The gang were dubbed the Rathkeale Rovers because some of the men had connections with the Co Limerick town. Judge Murray Creed jailed Richard ‘Kerry’ O’Brien, 31, of Cambridgeshire and Rathkeale - for 5½ years. His uncle, John ‘Cash’ O’Brien, 68, and from Wolverhampton, was sentenced to five years and three months. Daniel ‘Turkey’ O’Brien, 45, and Daniel Flynn, also 45, both of Smithy Fen, Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, were jailed for six years eight months, and four years, respectively. Donald Wong, 56, of Clapham Common, London - described by the judge as “a buyer, seller and valuer” - was sentenced to 5½ years.
Paul Pammen, 49, of Southend-on-Sea, and 37-year-old Alan Clarke, of Newham, London said to have headed the gang’s “disposal team” - were also jailed for 5½ years. Six other members of the gang were jailed on Tuesday. Judge Creed said the criminal enterprise “involved very-high-value goods, with significant harm caused to victims, both museums and members of the public, who would otherwise have viewed the material stolen”. He added: “It was a conspiracy both sophisticated, skilled and persistent, and involved significant cultural loss to the UK of museumquality artefacts, and items from international collections.” The judge said the conspiracy had been centred on the family seat in Rathkeale, telling the defendants: “At the heart of this enterprise was a family - a number of you are members of the O’Brien family. “Of 14 original conspirators, seven were connected with that home, seven were associates, like Terrence McNamara, while others were recruited in to find thieves prepared to carry out burglaries, particularly in carrying out the second attack on Durham museum. “No doubt others were involved, too.”
Murder suspect’s dog was fed parts of body A RUSSIAN woman, suspected of killing her German husband, is believed to have fed parts of his body to their dog.
Svetlana Batukova, 46, was found next to the bloody corpse of Horst Hans Henkels at their Mallorcan apartment last Friday. A post-mortem revealed that he had bled to death after being stabbed repeatedly with a kitchen knife. And, according to the online Periodistadigital paper, flesh from his arms had, reportedly, been sliced off and fed to the couple’s American Staffordshire bull terrier. Initial findings, widely
reported in local media on the Balearic Islands, indicated that the victim had been drugged before being stabbed repeatedly. He had bled to death on the floor of their apartment in Sant Lorrenc, on Mallorca’s east coast. The couple were said to have married in January and Henkels had recently undergone throat surgery, which meant he could hardly speak. Local police confirmed that they had been called out several times to the property in recent months over domestic rows. Batukova, reportedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs when arrested, appeared before an investigating magistrate earlier this week.
Electric car-buyers spark bonanza sale TESLA, the US electric car company, has already collected a staggering $300m in deposits after demand for its hotly-anticipated Model 3 car exceeded expectations.
Almost 300,000 customers have placed a $1,000 down-payment for Tesla’s low-cost, five-seater. The car will be released next year, with deliveries expected to take place in autumn or winter. The basic model will start at $35,000 (£24,500) and has a minimum range of 215 miles (346km) on a single charge. Tesla boss Elon Musk tweeted that 276,000 pre-orders had been re-
ceived, which could net his firm up to $10bn on completion. Demand is so high that it may be hard for Tesla to keep up with production, and Mr Musk said the company was “definitely going to need to rethink production planning”. Tesla hopes that, once production is at full capacity, around 500,000 vehicles a year can be manufactured. Last year Tesla delivered just over 50,000 vehicles, most of which featured its Model S saloon car, which has overtaken the Nissan Leaf to become the world’s best-selling all-electric vehicle. But Tesla continues to lose money as a result of its extensive researchand-development spending. In 2015 it lost $900m, leaving it with cash reserves of around $1.2bn.

Saudi Prince sparks Tigers can still be huge oil-price slump a roaring success THE price of oil has slumped dramatically following Saudi Arabia’s pledge that it would freeze production, but only if other major producers followed suit.
The comments, by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, appear to challenge Iran, which has vowed to increase oil production following the lifting of Western sanctions. In a Bloomberg TV interview, the Prince also spoke about his plan for a giant public investment fund, worth more than $2 trillion. It would be designed to reduce Saudi Arabia’s reliance on income from oil. Part of the plan, he said, would be a sale of shares in the stateowned oil company Aramco, which could start as soon as next year. Iran says it will not take part in a Doha conference on 17th April,
in which the freezing of oil output will be discussed. “If all countries agree to freeze production, we will be among them,” the Prince told Bloomberg. And when asked whether Iran should be among those countries, he replied: “Without doubt.” But oil prices, which had edged into positive mode, fell after Prince Mohammed’s comments. Tamas Varga, PVM Oil Associates analyst, said there had been high hopes about the impact of a possible production freeze, but he added: “There will be no rebalancing this year.” Shailaja Nair, of energy information providers Platts, said the market was still oversupplied with crude, and there
was no possibility of demand increasing in the short-term. “Considering the amount of crude already in the market, a freeze is not going to make much of a difference,” she said. A current monthly survey by Reuters showed that oil output from the 13 Opec members rose in March, with higher production from Iran and near-record exports from southern Iraq. And Iraq reported Opec’s biggest supply growth last year, producing more than four million barrels per day - making it the cartel’s second-largest producer after Saudi Arabia. Oil prices have plunged from their recent peak of $116 in June 2014 because of oversupply and sluggish demand.
TIGERS, which can still be seen in zoos - and in private homes, believe it or not - are now considered an endangered species.
But scientists believe the global population could almost treble in the next 20 years, provided sufficient action is taken to restore the wild beast’s habitat. Over the past century, tigers have virtually been wiped out as a result of “progress” - logging, agriculture, and deforestation to make way for roads, railways and towns. Today, there are only some 3,200 wild tigers in Asia - 97% fewer than there were a century ago, according to the WWF conservation group. And it is understood that about 10,000 are held in captivity by individuals who have them as pets. In China, especially, some 4,500 tigers
of different species are living in captivity. Most of them are in breeding programmes, which help keep the genetics of these animals as strong as possible. But this is still considered to be an extremely-dangerous “hobby” because they are still wild animals, capable of attacking humans at any time. It might be cute to care for these animals when they are cubs, but it doesn’t take long before they are fullygrown! And, curiously, it is illegal to keep them in some locations but not in others. Four of the remaining sub-species of tigers are considered endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and two are listed as “critically” threatened. However, the tiger could now be turning a corner, say scientists, who have conducted a new, satellite-image study. Their findings show that enough wild habi-
tat remains to allow a doubling of tiger numbers by 2022, which is the next “Year of the Tiger” in the Chinese astrological calendar. Add another 14 years and the global population “could approach a trebling”. But only if essential “corridors” are restored in the most deforested landscapes, and other steps are taken, said the researchers, led by the University of Minnesota’s Anup Joshi. Conservation corridors are regions of preserved habitat, connecting various areas and allowing animals to extend their territories and avoid inter-breeding. To estimate the progress being made by tigers towards this goal, the researchers analysed 14 years of images taken by satellites, tracking forest loss in 13 countries where tigers live. And they expected habitat loss to be much higher than the 7.7% observed.

EDUCATION FEAR FOR SOME KIDS! ENGLAND’S white British pupils are lagging way behind ethnic groups in schools, according to a report by CentreForum, a liberal think-tank based in Westminster, London.
Its driving principle is to promote opportunity for all and, in particular, for those in disadvantaged circumstances. And CentreForum maintains that the white group, while ahead as five-yearolds, slip down to 13th place, behind those of Chinese, Indian, Asian and black African heritage, by the time they sit GCSEs at the age of 16. The study also says pupils in England’s schools are not performing as well as their peers around the world. The British Government welcomed the report, saying it was right to raise standards. The CentreForum study, which looked at a wide range of factors surrounding education in England, found pupils from Chinese or Indian backgrounds were likely to make the most progress. But the report does, at least, acknowledge that overall levels of attainment in England are rising. “Since 2005, average performance at the end of secondary school has improved by just over half a GCSE grade,” it says. “Primary pupils are also achieving about a fifth of a national curriculum level higher than 10 years ago.” But the analysis suggests that more than 60% of secondary students, and 40% of primary pupils, are simply not reaching worldclass standards in writing, literacy, maths and science. In addition, their performance still falls short of the world’s leading countries in education, such as Finland and Canada. The CentreForum, accounting for changes to exams, which will see more academic subjects
become mandatory, and a new grades system, predicts a drop in those achieving a “good pass” in subjects like maths and English. It also shows regional divisions, with secondary pupils in London outperforming their counterparts in the North. And those cited as the country’s worst performing areas in attainment and progress are Knowsley, Blackpool, Stoke on Trent, Nottingham city, Barnsley and Doncaster. However, data for younger children shows they are achieving a good level of development, in line with the top-performing countries. Jo Hutchinson, CentreForum’s Associate Education Director, said parental engagement was key to the pupils’ success. “We are talking about things such as parents attending parents’ evenings at school, talking to their children about subject options, supervising homework, ensuring that the family eat together and have regular bedtimes,” she said. “Most parents actually want their children to continue in education and be successful in education. What sometimes differs is the extent to which they have the knowledge, the tools and the resources to help them make that aspiration real.” For a child, learning English as a second language should, on the face of it, be a significant disadvantage in education. But across England, these children have been making good progress at school, and improving their results. This complex and subtle analysis suggests the ethnic mix in different communities is one
potential factor behind regional variations in school performance. And for poorer pupils, those regional variations can mean falling behind by the equivalent of almost half-ayear. When CentreForum looked at the progress of similar children through primary and secondary school, white British pupils fell behind other ethnic groups. A child from a Chinese or Indian background was likely to make the most progress. The report will add to the growing concern about children from poorer, white, British communities. It’s not just what happens at school, but what happens at home that makes a difference. The value parents place on education, and simple daily rituals of helping with homework or regular bedtimes, can help a child. The challenge for schools is how to help provide that focus, hope and ambition in communities where a lack of jobs - or a feeling of being left behind - can also be a powerful influence on children. A Department for Education spokeswoman said: “We welcome this report, which shows the stark choice we face in education today - either we prepare today’s young people to compete with the best in the world, or we don’t. “Every time we have raised the bar for schools and colleges, they have risen to meet the challenge, and we are confident this is no exception. “Over time, we expect to see more pupils reach this new, higher standard - and the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers continuing to narrow.”

The overweights have created an obesity epidemic THERE are more obese adults globally than there are underweight people according to a major, worldwide study of 20 million people from 186 countries.
The research, led by scientists from Imperial College London and published in The Lancet, compared body mass index (BMI) among male and female adults from 1975 to 2014. It found that obesity in men had tripled, and had more than doubled in women. Lead author Prof Majid Ezzat said it was an “epidemic of severe obesity” and urged governments to act. The study, which pooled data from adults in 186 countries, found that the number of obese people worldwide had risen from 105 million in 1975 to 641 million in 2014. Meanwhile the number of underweight people had risen from 330 million to 462 million over the same period. Global obesity rates among men went up from 3.2% in 1975 to 10.8%, while among women they rose from 6.4 % in 1975 to 14.9%. This equates to 266 million obese men and 375 million obese women in the world in 2014, the study said. The research also predicted that the probability of reaching the World Health Organisation’s global obesity target, which aims for no rise in obesity above 2010 levels by 2025, “would be close to zero”. The clinical definition of obese is a BMI - a measurement that relates weight and height - of 30kg per metre squared (kg/m2). Prof Ezzati said: “Our research has shown that, over 40 years, we have transitioned from a world in which underweight prevalence

Agadir, here we come TENERIFE North airport has started flying a new, direct route to the Moroccan city of Agadir, via a connection operated by the Binter airline on Wednesdays. The airline expects to maintain this route throughout the year and, up to the end of
the summer season, there will be 62 operations (take-offs and landings) with 4,464 seats on offer. Although this route had been operated from the airport previously, it is the first time it’s a scheduled weekly flight, and on a regular day.

was more than double that of obesity, to one in which more people are obese than underweight. “Although it is reassuring that the number of underweight individuals has decreased over the last four decades, global obesity has reached crisis point.” The Professor added: “We hope these findings create an imperative to shift responsibility from the individual to governments, and to develop and implement policies to address obesity. “For instance, unless we make healthy food options like fresh fruits and vegetables affordable for everyone, and increase the price of unhealthy processed foods, the situation is unlikely to change.” The research also discovered: *More obese men and women now live in China and the US than in any other country *Women in the UK have the third-highest BMI in Europe and the 10th-highest for men *Almost one-fifth of the world’s obese adults - 118 million - live in only six high-income, English-speaking countries: Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, UK, and the US
*By 2025, the UK is projected to have the highest levels of obese women in Europe (38%), followed by Ireland (37%) and Malta (34%) *Being underweight remains a significant health problem in countries such as India and Bangladesh The team also examined the number of underweight people, and, over the same time period, the study suggested the rates had fallen from 14% to 9% in men, and 15% to 10% in women. Prof George Davey Smith, from the School of Social and Community Medicine at the University of Bristol, writes in the same journal about the danger of becoming “a fatter, healthier, but more unequal world”. He adds: “A focus on obesity at the expense of recognition of the substantial, remaining burden of undernutrition threatens to divert resources away from disorders that affect the poor to those more likely to affect the wealthier in low-income countries.” The study also observed: *There are 7.7m obese women in the UK *China has the largest number of obese people
in the world, with 43.2m men and 46.4m women *The US has 41.7m obese men and 46.1m obese women *In comparison, the study found there were 6.8m obese men in the UK in 2014, and 7.7m obese women Jamie Blackshaw, National team leader for Obesity and Healthy Weight, Public Health England, said: “People who are overweight and obese suffer lifechanging consequences, and it costs the NHS more than £6 billion a year. “The causes of obesity are complex, and the environment we live in encourages poor diets and low levels of physical activity. “There is no single solution; we have to address the many factors that drive up obesity levels. We all - government, industry, local authorities and the public - have a role to play in that. “That’s why we’re supporting the government to develop its childhood obesity strategy. We’re running the world’s first national diabetes prevention programme, and we’re currently piloting, with local councils and Leeds Beckett University, a whole systems approach to tackling obesity.”
The 45-year-old electrician is thought to have been electrocuted in the Phantom Manor last Saturday morning between 8-9am, just before the park opened to the public. He was said to have been working on lighting at the attraction, which was immediately closed. The ride, which features zombies, a ghostly dog and a skeletal bride, promises to turn visitors’ stomachs with a series of “ghastly goings-on”. A spokesman for the local Prosecutor said an initial examination suggested “accidental death by electrocution”, but a post-mortem is planned. Electrical experts are helping police, who have interviewed colleagues who found the man’s body. The technician, who has not been named, was a father from Noisy-
le-Grand, to the east of Paris, and had worked in the park since 2002. Disneyland union rep Patrick Maldidier told French newspaper Le Parisien that the victim was very popular, and “always had a smile on his face”. A Disneyland Paris spokesman told the paper that everyone at the park was “deeply saddened”, conveying their thoughts to the victim’s family and friends. There will be no further statements until the police, from nearby Chessy, complete their probe. But the theme park will remain open, although Phantom Manor was expected to be closed until at least Wednesday as police from nearby Chessy continued their investigation. The park, which attracted 14.2 million visitors in 2014 - many from the UK - has encountered previous accidents. In 2010, a cleaner died after becoming trapped under a boat on the It’s a Small World ride. Five people were injured on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in 2011, and a five-yearold boy ended up in a hospital’s intensive care unit after falling from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in 2013.

By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct LAST Friday saw an 18-month low for sterling to euro, and this week the pound started where it left off, with the euro trading at its strongest in 22 months. Brexit is still one of the main factors affecting sterling, together with the Tata Steel situation. The sale of British steel assets will probably keep the rate low this week, but the stimulus package introduced by the ECB (European Central Bank) has also made the euro stronger as a result of an increase in funds to the Eurozone. This is a repeat scenario of the lead-up DESPITE the country’s worst political crisis in decades, the Spanish economy has been a model of defiance so far this year, with a recovery that began in 2012. Spain has been without a proper government since December, when an inconclusive general election led to a deeplyfragmented parliament. Party leaders have since failed to build a governing majority, despite several attempts, and now seem increasingly-resigned to holding a repeat election in June, which might not even resolve the problem then. Yet economic growth was just a fraction below the rate seen in the previous quarter, putting the country on course to expand at least 2.7% this year. If that prediction holds, Spain will again be one of the fastest-growing nations in the eurozone, outpacing the likes of Germany, France and Italy - as it did last year! But there are conflicting reports, because the latest forecast by the Bank of Spain is that the economy is slowing down. And the Bank does not believe the Government’s assertion that gross domestic product (GDP) will continue to grow at a pace of around 3% this year and the next. The central bank’s quarterly economic re-

Steel yourself for low rates to the 2014 Scottish Referendum and, to a lesser degree, Britain’s General Election last May. We can expect further volatility as we get closer to the in-out Referendum date. On the local front, some of our new clients have been asking questions about buying property in the Canary Islands, and how they could be affected
if Britain leaves the European Union. We have to remember that even before joining the EU, people from UK were buying property in Tenerife, other parts of Spain and the rest of Europe. What should be taken into account is how the exchange rate for buyers will be affected if the “leave” campaign is successful.
Six weeks ago, we reported the forecast by Goldman Sachs financial analysts, who believed the GBP-EUR could go down by as much as 15-20% in the short term if there were a Brexit. “With another four months to go before the Referendum, the interbank rate is currently fluctuating in the region of 1.26-1.28. A 20%
drop in the rate could see a UK pension of say £1,000 converting to 1.008-1,024 euros - a loss of more than 250 euros per month. On the same basis, a property purchased at 100,000 euros would now be in the region of £97-99,000 instead of approximately £78-£79,000.” At that time, we were looking at an interbank rate ranging between 1.26 and 1.28. This week has seen the IB rate around the 1.23-to-under-the-1.25 mark - already three cents lower than that period. For those looking to buy a property in the Canaries or other parts of Europe in the coming months, there will be some of the “bird-in-the-hand” school, who will want to
A balancing act by defiant Spain port says: “In Spain, the information available is consistent with a gradual, moderate slowdown in activity from the high pace of expansion sustained throughout 2015.” The report authors also note that, even though their downward revision to 2.7% is moderate, “the balance of risks surrounding this baseline scenario has worsened considerably in recent months”. Chief among these risks is political uncertainty, said the central lender. This concern mirrors misgivings by the European Commission regarding the stalemate in Spain, which is yet to name a new Prime Minister following inconclusive elections in December. “Doubts over the future course of economic policies may have a negative bearing on private agents’ spending decisions, especially if the current situation of uncertainty extends over time,” adds the report, which is part of the Bank of Spain’s Economic Bul-
letin. The report also makes a note of geopolitical and financial market tensions at international level, which could have an impact on Spain’s economy. But Luis de Guindos, Spain’s Economy Minister, said: “There is a slight deceleration, but there is an even greater deceleration in the rest of Europe. The out-performance of the Spanish economy continues.” Along with the central bank and most private sector economists, De Guindos says that it is the broader global slowdown, and not political uncertainty at home, which poses the main threat to the Spanish economy right now. And, said Miguel Cardoso, the country’s Chief Economist at retail bank BBVA: “Spain is in a pretty good place. “We don’t see a slowdown in the employment data. Credit-flows are doing well, retail sales are doing well and tourism is doing great. Consumer confidence has fallen a bit, but is still
near record levels.” Over the past year, in particular, Spain has received a helping hand from factors outside Madrid’s control. Falling oil prices have boosted disposable income, while record-low interest rates, and the recent decline of the euro, have lifted the prospects for Spanish businesses. A string of terror attacks in countries such as Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia has diverted tourist
flows to Spain, boosting one of the country’s most important sectors. Until now, they have proved far more powerful than any concerns linked to domestic politics. However, while officials and analysts agree that Spain’s recovery is sufficiently robust to withstand six months of political drift, there are concerns about what would happen if repeat elections fail to resolve the
secure their rate, preempting any possible further drop in sterling-euro. Others may be in a financial position to “risk it for a biscuit”. On the other hand, for those selling property in Euros and converting to Pounds, it’s still the best it has been for some time. Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, our friendly experts at Currencies Direct are only a phone call away whenever you need them. At home in Spain since 1999, they have 10 offices across the country, including one in Los Cristianos. Phone: 922 971 781 E: canaries@currencies direct.com W: currenciesdirect.com deadlock. That would mean the country’s political uncertainty stretching into the second half of the year. And beyond the encouraging numbers, as the Bank of Spain says, some cracks are starting to show. Investment bankers, for example, are finding it increasingly hard to make money by advising on mergers and acquisitions, or preparing companies for a public listing. According to data compiled by Dealogic, investment banking revenues started to dry up several months before the December election - and have fallen even further since. Home sales, meanwhile, have stopped rising after an intense but brief recovery, which is another sign that investors are staying on the sidelines until the political uncertainty clears. “The stagnation in home sales is relatively surprising,” said Cardoso. “All the fundamentals suggest we should be seeing a greater increase.” And the Spanish economy, despite the progress made since the 2012 crisis peak, is still thought to be saddled with structural weaknesses, said Santiago Carbó, an economics and finance professor at Bangor University.

River Monsters Tuesday 12th April, ITV1, 19.30 A disturbing report from Southeast Asia, of something in the water that’s sliced cleanly through a young man’s testicles, is enough to lure ‘fishing detective’ Jeremy Wade to the shores of the Mekong – a river long renowned for its monstrous fish. But what kind of river creature could have inflicted such a distinctive, surgical wound? In his quest to expose the unseen mutilator, Jeremy uncovers multiple victims who’ve been mauled, half-blinded, and even fatally wounded by the same mysterious assailant: a baby-faced killer that appears to be proliferating, and whose presence is turning parts of Cambodia into an aquatic minefield.

Just as well she’s got good neighbours in Beth and Eric Baird. Over at the Bairds, Cathy turns up to boast about the luxury holiday to Egypt she’s just booked for her and Colin. However, her good mood proves short-lived when she discovers that Colin has been using his laptop for some ‘personal’ satisfaction. Best Walks With A View With Julia Bradbury ITV1, 20.00
Julia travels to the Cotswolds, near Cheltenham, to uncover some of the finest views in the south of England. Starting in Winchcombe, the ‘jewel in the Cotswold Crown’, Julia takes up the many walking trails on offer to discover an ancient burial mound, historic castle and spectacular views from the top of Cleeve Hill - the highest point in Gloucestershire. Heading out of Winchcombe, a village famous for its walking trails, Julia explores the historic Sudeley castle – home to the last of Henry VIII’s six wives. She soon finds herself atop of Belas Knap, an ancient Neolithic barrow that contained the remains of at least 38 human skeletons. Following along the Cotswold Way, she reaches the climax of the walk, Cleeve Hill Common, an unusual setting that sees sheep and walkers happily sharing the landscape with a century-old golf course.

News of the Bowers’ divorce hits the papers and Laura’s (Leila Campbell) disgrace becomes public, which has grave consequences for her friendship with Tom and the future of the surgery. With Bob (Mark Bazeley) back and injured in hospital, the attraction between Pat (Claire Rushbrook) and Marek (Alexandre Willaume) is thrown into sharp relief, but the risk of acting on their feelings is huge. Stan (Chris Coghill) returns home on leave, but the happy reunion with Steph (Clare Calbraith) is soured by his worrying attitude to invasion. At the reading of the will, Frances (Samantha Bond) discovers that Peter was keeping an enormous secret from her, but the surprise return of one particular villager offers her some unexpected comfort. Following the success of series one, acclaimed British actresses Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey, Outnumbered) and Francesca Annis (The Little House, Cranford) are reunited with the impressive ensemble cast including Ruth Gemmell (Penny Dreadful), Claire Rushbrook (Whitechapel), Ed Stoppard (Cilla), Chris Coghill (EastEnders), Clare Calbraith (Vera), Fenella Woolgar (War & Peace), Mark Bazeley (The Frankenstein Chronicles), Mike Noble (Mr Selfridge), and Daniel Ryan (Mount Pleasant). It’s the summer of 1940 and the village of Great Paxford is caught up in the nightmare of the Battle of Britain. Two weeks after the defeat at Dunkirk, the German army is advancing through France and Britain is bracing itself for invasion. Throughout the series the residents at the heart of this rural Cheshire community face their own personal challenges and conflicts as reputations are tarnished, loved ones lost, and shocking secrets are discovered. The women, under the auspices of the Great Paxford Women’s Institute, unite and discover inner resources that will change their lives forever whilst helping maintain the nation’s fabric in its darkest hour.

BBC News feckless slave Grumio, in the multi-award-winning and BAFTA-nominated sitcom set in ancient Rome. Alongside their regular nemeses, this year our Plebs will encounter a legion of new Roman recruits: visiting parents (Samantha Spiro, Danny Webb, Steve Edge), a brazen Vestal Virgin (Michelle Keegan), a doping discus thrower (Ingrid Oliver), a theatrical grande dame (Miriam Margolyes) and an ancient weatherman (David Bamber). It’s one year on in the Eternal City, as we flash forward all the way to 25BC. The new series picks up where the last one left off, with our three lowly Plebs still living in a squalid block in the worst part of town, which is now presided over by the ruthless Landlady (Maureen Lipman), as the fate of the unscrupulous Landlord (Karl Theobald) is still to be revealed. They work dead-end jobs for Rome’s third largest grain supply company, under the direction of their fearsome boss Flavia (Doon Mackichan), and although the Games are in town, they can’t get tickets for any event - not even the pig chase. However, an encounter with a fiery Gallic activist, Delphine (Bella Dayne), might at least improve Marcus’ romantic stakes. Could she possibly become his Gaul-friend? Or is she just a bit too real for him? Let the Games begin...

Abused: The Untold Story BBC1, 20:30
Documentary telling the story of those who stood up and broke their silence about sexual abuse, changing Britain forever. This is the definitive account of a national scandal, assembling an unprecedented range of voices, from the survivors and their friends and family to the professionals who led reform of some of the country’s biggest institutions. In 2012 Britain was shaken by horrific revelations of sexual abuse by Jimmy Savile, abuse that had gone unchecked for decades. Thousands of people came forward to talk about their own experiences - many for the first time - and the shocking scale of abuse was revealed. It reached far beyond Savile and into the very heart of British society. Some of those victims speak publicly for the first time about the consequence of abuse in their relationships and in their families. Alongside those survivors, this film brings together for the first time the professionals at the very heart of the story.

Europe: Them Or Us: An Island Apart BBC2, 21.00
Radio 4 Today Presenter and the BBC’s former political editor Nick Robinson presents an authoritative and impartial two-part series exploring the turbulent history of the UK’s relationship with ‘Europe’ - the Common Market, the EEC and now the EU. For decades it has divided the public, torn political parties apart, felled prime ministers and baffled, bemused and angered our neighbours in Europe. The question the country has faced again and again is whether we should be partners or spectators, take part in or stand aside from the post-war project of a union of European nations. We have - in other words - struggled with a simple question: does Europe mean ‘them’ or ‘us’? The first programme, An Island Apart, takes us into the corridors of power, to hear from the men and women who took the decisions which led to us being where we are today. The film examines why British governments first shunned the new Common Market, then begged to join it, and it explores the decisive part played by three British prime ministers: Winston Churchill, Harold Macmillan and Edward Heath. After being humiliated by the French president Charles de Gaulle when Britain first applied to join, Heath triumphantly took the UK into the Common Market 10 years later, with the wholehearted support of some of today’s Eurosceptics, such as Norman Tebbit. But the seeds of today’s debate were already being sown.

The unfamiliar story in this first episode – sometimes witty, sometimes poignant – emerges from a series of special interviews with Heath and two of his successors, Tony Blair and David Cameron, as well as other key British players – Roy Jenkins, Enoch Powell, Shirley Williams, Barbara Castle, Norman Tebbit, Nigel Farage and William Hague – plus the main civil servants and diplomats involved on both sides of the English Channel. Some of the interviews come from the 1996 BBC Two series The Poisoned Chalice, also produced by John Bridcut.

Scott & Bailey ITV1, 21.00
8th April - 14th April 2016
Wed 13th April
Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp return to the roles of super cool Janet Scott and her hotheaded partner Rachel Bailey; the crime-fighting partnership forged over four previous series following the drama’s successful critical and ratings launch on ITV in 2011. With D.C.I. Gill Murray in retirement, ever-ambitious Rachel (Suranne Jones) returns from her Vice secondment fired up and full of new ideas and initiatives. She’s gained valuable experience and really wants to make her mark as she returns to Syndicate 9’s Murder Squad. Exhilarated to step up to the plate, Rachel is exactly who Janet (Lesley Sharp) and the Squad need to move forward with a terrifying and sinister Internet crime investigation of epic scale and unrelenting horror. Using her Vice authorisation, Rachel accesses a disturbing world where people brag about committing murder and lay down the gauntlet for the next victim. A game of ruthless life or death daring develops, as Scott & Bailey investigate multiple killers with horrifying and everlasting consequences. They will be changed forever and the investigation will take a devastating toll on their professional lives. Returning to Syndicate 9 after a year with Vice, Rachel (Suranne Jones) needs some time to rekindle her neglected friendship with Janet (Lesley Sharp), but the shocking murder of Michael Edgerton forces her to hit the ground running as she steps up to Acting DI under the watchful eye of Julie Dodson (Pippa Haywood). When a teenage boy sees a clip of Michael’s murder on the darknet, it’s clear that Syndicate 9 are dealing with something much bigger and more sinister than a single, indiscriminate murder. A sick game is being played and Syndicate 9 need to find the next potential victim before the killer does. Glad of Rachel’s return, Janet couldn’t have known how much she was going to need her friend. When Taisie (Harriet Waters) is arrested, setting off an inconceivable chain of events, Janet is thrown into turmoil and Rachel’s wisdom and experience are exactly what she needs to steer her through the crisis.

Firstly they are asked to cook their Calling Card, a dish that represents who they are as a cook. John and Gregg each pick their favourite dish and two lucky cooks will go through to the second test. The remaining three contestants must decide whether to create a savoury dish using trout as the main ingredient or a sweet dish using blackberries as the central ingredient. They have one hour to create a dish that will earn them a place in the next round. One chef will be sent home. The four remaining cooks now have to cook two courses that will excite not just John and Gregg, but also some of MasterChef’s most inspiring winners and finalists, who return to judge the food of this year’s new contenders. John and Gregg will then decide which three contestants deserve to go through to Friday’s quarter final.

HOW do you measure 25 years in show business? In live shows? In fans, followers and friends made over the years? In anecdotes shared over countless post-gig cups of coffee?
Whatever the answer, Tenerife vocalist Elaine Alexander has a mountain of sweet memories to reflect on during her silver anniversary on the entertainment circuit this year. From the humble be-
DAME Judi Dench was the toast of the Olivier Awards last Sunday after winning a record eighth Olivier for her Best Supporting Actress role as Paulina in The Winter’s Tale.
No one has won as many Oliviers for acting since the Awards began 40 years ago. And, as she collected her award for her role in Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s production, she joked about being “livid” because she had lost a bet with her grandson. “I’m rather overcome. I didn’t expect it ... it feels terrific”, she said backstage. And Dame Judi praised the “really fantastic company and crew and stage management” of the Shakespeare production at the Garrick Theatre. “Everybody says what a wonderful time they have doing something,” she added: “I can truly say that in the Winter’s Tale, it was an absolutely memorable family.” She said of the award: “It’s lovely to have, but it belongs to all those people just as much as it belongs to me.” The musical Gypsy won the most awards for a single production. Its four prizes included Best Actress in a Musi-
ginnings of a shy, impromptu performance accompanying a hotel pianist, Elaine has gone on to prove herself as the ultimate “song-trepreneur”, commanding undisputed eminence among fellow professionals with her velvet voice and sparkling personality. She boasts a repertoire
of more than 1,000 songs in eight languages, and she’s another branch on an incredibly-talented musical family tree. Her mother is a retired jazz singer and her uncle, Jeff Leyton - a former West End star who also performs on the Island - is described by Elaine as the best singer she knows.
Elaine, who hails from Edinburgh, cites Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin as her musical influences, with Joe and Tina Harriet and Sheila Tyson as her Tenerife inspirations. “I admired them all and I was lucky they took me under their wing and supported me for 10 years,” she recalls, gratefully. In a quarter-century dedicated to a labour of love, Elaine has won two Tenerife Entertainment Awards, made three appearances on Spanish television and been offered a record deal by EMI, which she turned down to focus instead on starting a family. When asked about an apotheosis, she’s torn between two moments: collaborating with Stuart and Corey, from
popular duo T2K, to form the super-group BOOM; and performing with Mikey Mike at Hyde Park in London to thousands at the Winter Wonderland Festival in 2012 and 2013. “Both amazing and unforgettable experiences working with great guys and talents” she says. Elaine’s future goals, while still balancing a gruelling, weekly schedule with being a dedicated, full-time Mum, suggest that tourists and residents alike can still enjoy her exquisite vocals for a good while yet. “My aims are to keep improving, pushing and challenging myself and spend as much time as possible with my family,” she says. If you’re lucky enough to catch Elaine at one the following shows, be
sure to quiz her on the burgeoning artist she thinks will rise to the very top, as well as her unprintable, most embarrassing on-stage moment. Mondays - 9.45pm: Hotel Costa Sur/ La Niña. 11pm: Restaurante Margarita, Los Cristianos. Tuesdays - 9.30pm: Costa Adeje Gran Hotel, or Unique Bar, Torviscas. 11.15pm: Ye Olde Ocean, Fañabe Wednesdays - 9.15pm: Bahia Princess Hotel, Torviscas Thursdays - 9pm: Restaurante Margarita 10.30pm: Unique Bar Fridays - 9pm: The Soul Suite, Parque de la Paz. 11pm: Restaurante Margarita Saturdays - 9.30pm: Costa Adeje Gran Hotel with T2K, or Sports Club, Los Gigantes
There is nothing like Dame Judi! cal for runaway favourite Imelda Staunton, and best Musical Revival. Imelda, who opened the ceremony with a performance of Gypsy’s Everything’s Coming Up Roses, said: “We felt we were doing something special every night, and every night we went out and wanted to do a better show than the night before.” The show, which transferred to the West End from the Chichester Festival Theatre, also won the Best Lighting Design, and Lara Pulver was named Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. The ceremony, hosted by Michael Ball, was staged at London’s Royal Opera House and included a performance by US singer Cyndi Lauper, whose Kinky Boots was named Best New Musical. Denise Gough won Best Actress for her acclaimed performance as a recovering addict in People, Places and Things, which recently opened in the West End
after last year’s sell-out run at the National Theatre. The Irish actress used her speech to raise the issue of diversity, saying: “In a year where we have seen progress made in racial diversity on our stages, it’s just a bit sad that, in this category, it hasn’t been represented.” People, Places and Things was one of four wins for the National. Duncan Macmillan’s drama also won Best Sound, while Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was named Best Revival, and Mark Gatiss won Best Supporting Actor for Three Days in the Country. The Best Actor prize went to Kenneth Cranham in Florian Zeller’s The Father. Cranham, who plays a man with dementia, beat competition from Kenneth Branagh, Benedict Cumberbatch, Adrian Lester and Mark Rylance. Meanwhile, Robert Icke triumphed in the Best Director category for his work on the
Greek tragedy Oresteia, which ran at The Almeida theatre. Kinky Boots won two other prizes, with Matt Henry collecting Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Lola and Gregg Barnes awarded for his Costume Design. The musical In the
Heights also had three wins - for Outstanding Achievement in Music and Choreography together with David Bedella’s trophy for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical. The Royal Court’s production of Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen was
named Best New Play and Anna Fleischle won Best Set Design. Nell Gwynn, starring Gemma Arterton and written by Jessica Swale, was named Best New Comedy. The prize for Outstanding Achievement in Opera went to the English National Opera (ENO) chorus and orchestra for The Force of Destiny, Lady Macbeth Of Mtsensk and The Queen Of Spades, all performed at London Coliseum. The ENO has faced months of turmoil, including the resignation of musical director Mark Wigglesworth, and the threat of strike action by its chorus over new contracts. Martin Fitzpatrick, ENO head of music, who collected the prize, said the chorus and orchestra were “a vital part of the lifeblood” of an opera company. Long-running musical The Phantom of the Opera won the Olivier’s audience award - the only category decided by the public.

By Vanessa Vee HAVE you heard of Sitges, a town located about 35km south-west of Barcelona, which is renowned for its film festival, carnival and beaches, as well as nightspots and historical sights. It has even been referred to as a miniature Íbiza.
The Sitges economy is based on tourism and culture, offering more than 4,500 hotel beds, and over half of them in four-star hotels. It has a warm “microclimate”, with an average of over 300 sunny days per year, which makes it possible to enjoy outdoor activities almost every day. Throughout the year, numerous events take

place in this beautiful town: the International Film Festival of Catalonia; Carnival; Fiesta Mejor; Theatre festivals; Vintage Car Rally; Harvest Festival; Concerts … the list goes on and on. However, for those seeking a more tranquil experience, simply take a stroll along the seafront boulevard, a bike ride through the Garraf Natural Park, or soak up the evening atmosphere on the renowned “Dos De Mayo” street. This family-friendly resort also offers numerous play-sites for children, with parks offering picnic areas and swings, sandy beaches, and the safe waterfront promenade. The town has always been characterised by its tolerance, both to locals and the open-mindedness of visitors. It is most definitely convivial, where all people are welcome, regardless
of age, colour, creed or sexual orientation. The Sitges seafront restaurants aren’t all tourist traps, but you’11 inevitably pay a premium for the sea view - as you do in all holiday resorts, Tenerife included. Do not be afraid to venture off the beaten
track because, as always, the restaurants which prove to be little gems always tend to be tucked away. Accommodation is varied, offering basic hostels to small boutique hotels, to top-end five-star specials. Spacious apartments are
also available for families. There are various excursions to sight-see the architecture as well as the many interesting museums, including lots of historic sights and monuments. And let’s not forget the obvious water sports, cycling, swimming and
walking routes. In a nutshell, how can you resist the curiosity of this former fishing village, which is sometimes nicknamed “Barcelonaon-Sea”, though I can assure you it holds no similarities to “Suttonon-Sea” Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team have put together a fabulous taster offer for anyone wanting to “test the water” in Sitges this month. Return residents’ flights from Tenerife, resort transfers, 4 nights bedand-breakfast in a front-line hotel, from only 165 euros per person (based on two residents sharing). Alternative dates, board basis and hotels are available on request. GASTROCANARIAS TENERIFE’S International Trade Fair and Congress Centre returns between 24-26th May for the third annual CanariesGastrocanarias event - a specialised show promoting cuisine produced in the Canary Islands.
This year’s Gastronomic Hall will occupy about 10,000sq/m of the Santa Cruz Fairground, where a total of 130 stands will exhibit
the latest products and food services. And director José Carlos Marrero hopes to attract at least 12,000 visitors. There will be various competitions, contests and culinary demonstrations, in addition to other items such as conferences and workshops. Cabildo Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe considers the trade fair to be “the perfect marriage between tourism, landscape and gastronomy”. Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, who thanked the organisation for choosing the
Tenerife capital to stage the event, added: “It has grown to become a benchmark in the culinary field.” And the Canaries’ Agriculture and Livestock Minister, Narvay Quintero, who said gastronomy had a fundamental value for the economy and tourism, hailed the importance of local cuisine as “a good product”. And this year, as an extra treat, Tenerife winemakers have reserved a “Wine Street” site, where visitors can taste wines from different regions of origin and various wineries.
Wine wars!
FIVE Spanish trucks were attacked on Tuesday by 100 protesting French wine-growers, near the border crossing of Le Boulou. They swamped the road with thousands of litres of wine from the trucks’ tanks, to protest at the arrival of a production which, they say, will lead to plunging prices. Spanish diplomatic sources said that the vats of two of the trucks were completely emptied, while the other three managed to come away with a share of their load. It is understood that the sabotage happened by the first toll of the motorway by the A9, across the border. The Spanish ambassador later contacted French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve. According to sources, Cazeneuve expressed his apologies to the Spanish Embassy. The wine-growers who had, essentially, organised the protest, were from the neighbouring
region of Aude, which is complaining about the entry of Spanish bulk wine at prices ranging from 30-40 euros per hectolitre, while French wines cost between 7080 euros. The Spanish Confederation of Goods Transport (CETM) said in a statement that the two emptied trucks belonged to the Manchego Transportes Felix, one of its partners. The CETM regretted that this attack happened “in the presence of television cameras and members of the French Gendarmerie, which allowed demonstrators to act with impunity”. It added: “These are deplorable actions. And what of the French Government, that appears to allow these attacks?” The Association of Carriers will ask Spain and the European Union to “demand accountability” to the French Government for violating the Europeans treaties to “allow yet again the free movement of goods, and punish those responsible for the attack”.

Pumping up the volume!
Grumpy people need more sleep
By Carl Pattison
By Val Sainsbury
JUST as we are starting to ditch the regular use of hair-irons, the art of creating volume - in the hair world - is ontrend again.
FEELING fedup and irritable are two side-effects of not getting enough sleep … and scientists have discovered why: having a bad night warps the parts of the brain linked to emotion.
This isn’t just for longer hair because shorter hair is also scaling the heights. And it wouldn’t harm, once in a while, to re-create this look yourself,. So what’s the best way to achieve gravity-defying hair, and how can you accomplish this at home? Longer hair is easier to work with the day after it has been washed. This ensures that it isn’t overly-clean, which would make it more difficult to manage. You will need plenty of root-boosting spray, and a good, non-aerosol hairspray. This is your basis for achieving that much-soughtafter volume. Spray dry, or dampen hair at the
roots with the volume spray, and set loosely on large rollers - ie Cokecan size - or blow-dry on similar-sized brushes. Once dry, apply a spritz of your chosen spray, and leave to cool. Taking fist-full sections and back-comb lightly, from roots to ends. Spritz again, and take a short, bristle, paddlebrush and smooth over the top sections, leaving the underneath to give support to the rest. If you’re trying to create volume on shorter hair, start with damper
hair, applying a small amount of mousse and your favourite root-lifting spray. Using your finger, blow dry into style to create root-lift, and finish off with the correct-size brush. Don’t forget your spray, to seal afterwards. If it’s volume you want, stay away from anything oily or waxy. Even shine sprays will destroy hair volume, so think dry, lightweight products if you’re trying to raise the roof, hairwise.
Hooray Henrys
By Carl Pattison THERE’S always going to be a reason to be well turned out during some stage of the summer months, and what better way to do it than in style? Whether you’re dressing yourself - or your man - one of this year’s hottest summer fashions is the “OXFORD” look. Styled from top to toe in nothing but smarter elegance, it still looks
casual, and right-ontrend. The basis for this look is your blazer. This must be thin cotton, or linen, to withstand the heat here. Paler colours will work the best, so pick from whites, camels and pastel blues, to start off this look. Your shorts should complement - or match - your jacket. Don’t go for baggy, either. Stick to fitted, and just above
the knee. It’s up to you whether you put on a short-sleeve shirt underneath, or a matching polo. Even a smart T-shirt will carry this off. It depends where you’re going, and how dressed-up you want to be. Adding a loose tie can add to this “preppy” look. It all depends on you, and how you feel. Shoes must be loafers or boat shoes, although I’ve seen a few light-coloured “brogues” which also blend in well, just as long as they don’t look too heavy. You can carry off this style, from work to a wedding. It depends on how much you dress it up - or down. If you choose well, you can mix and match these items to create a multitude of images, which will carry you right through the summer months, into autumn. Who said preppy had to be boring?
Doctors have long known that people who suffer from insomnia are at risk of depression, anxiety and mood problems. Chinese scientists used high-tech scanners to examine the brains of 23 people with “primary” insomnia, who hadn’t slept well for at least a month. This type of insomnia involves sleeplessness which can’t be attributed to a medical, psychiatric or environmental cause, such as drug-abuse or medications. The images showed the strength of the electrical currents throughout the brain, and were compared with those of 30 healthy people. The team found significant differences in white matter - the “wiring” that connects the different parts of the brain. Patients suffering from a lack of sleep showed signs of damage to white matter throughout the brain - the most severe being situated on the right-hand side, which tends to control emotion. The corpus callosum - the section which con-
nects the right-hand section of the brain to the left - was not working as effectively as it should have been. The scientists, from Guangdong No.2 Provincial People’s Hospital, also found significantlyreduced white matter in the thalamus, which regulates consciousness, sleep and alertness. They wrote in the Radiology medical journal: “The reduced activity in the body of the corpus callosum, as observed in our study, may be related to changes in emotional and sleep patterns, in primary-insomnia patients.” Primary insomnia is associated with daytime fatigue, mood-disruption and cognitive impairment, and often leads to depression and anxiety disorders. Nearly all living things have an internal mechanism, known as the circadian rhythm - or body clock - which synchronises bodily functions with the 24-hour pattern of the Earth’s rotation. In humans, the clock is regulated by bodily senses, most importantly the way the eye perceives light and dark, and the way skin feels temperature changes. There is growing evidence that altering this rhythm - for example, by working anti-social hours, or travelling regularly between different time zones - places a strain on the body clock,
and creates long-term health problems. The new study suggests that this may be because changing the body clock impacts on the brain. Study leader, Shumei Li, said: “Insomnia is a remarkably-prevalent disorder. However, its causes and consequences remain elusive. “White-matter tracts are bundles of axons long fibres of nerve cells that connect one part of the brain to another. “If white-matter tracts are impaired, communication between brain regions is disrupted.” The study also found a loss of myelin, the protective coating around nerve fibres, in patients with insomnia. Researchers said more work was needed. Although they had found strong links between insomnia and white-matter degradation, they could not be sure whether the sleep problems had caused the brain problems, or whether the brain problems had caused the insomnia. In 2014, a large British project suggested that people in the UK slept for two hours less each night than they did 60 years ago. The authors of that study, from Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Manchester and Surrey universities, warned that people had become “supremely arrogant”, by ignoring the importance of sleep.

MAKE LIFE EASIER
By Miruna Voicu INTERIOR design is an area in which everyone can participate with no formal training, and without ground-breaking ideas. It’s really a question of what works for you.
We all have a home where we can relax, and whether it’s your own or rented, our instinct is to put our own personal touch on it. This could involve introducing a favourite colour through cushions or ornaments, or adding personal effects, books and photos. If you own a property, you obviously have many more options, and your interior design will depend on how you use the home. Is it used simply for the family, or do you
rent it out? If you are renting, you may be more limited in the changes you’d like to make. Interior design is based on form and functionality. Basically, that means how it looks - and how it fits in with your lifestyle. For example, why have a bedside table? If your bedroom is small, you may think it looks better without
one. But then, where will you put your book, your drink, your mobile phone? Having a bedside table is a question of functionality, in that it works for you in an every-day situation. So interior design is about finding a balance between what looks amazing, and what actually works on a daily basis. Sometimes, rooms pictured
in magazines look fantastic, yet wouldn’t be at all practical or comfortable to live in. Finding a compromise isn’t difficult, but involves some thought. So, if you don´t have much room in the lounge and hardly ever eat at a dining table, don´t have a dining table just because there is space for one. And use that extra room for a bigger sofá and coffee table you will use every day. Basically, keep an
open mind about what you should have in your property; work out how you actually live, and fit your furnishings around that. If you don´t have space for a coffee table, or prefer not to have one, go for a nest of tables, which can be tucked away, and brought out when you need them. Fortunately, there are sofá beds today which look fabulous as a sofá and, at the same time, convert to a sofá bed
with a comfortable mattress. There are extending dining tables, say, which don´t take up much space but can be made bigger when you invite visitors for a meal. And terrace chairs can be used upright to eat at a table, and then reclined to enable you to sunbathe, or take a nap. So make life easier, and make your home fit for purpose. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.

And on Wednesday, meet the dentist from Oxford!
DOCTOR Manuel Patron, one of the specialist dentists at Medical Implant, Los Abrigos, regularly puts a new smile on patients’ faces - but only on a Wednesday!
That’s because the native Tenerifian, who studied in La Laguna, Barcelona and London, now lives and works in the city of Oxford, travelling to the Island just once a week. The 35-year-old dentist and author, who has also co-authored many dental and aesthetic articles, supports the idea of dental tourism. And he just loves practising favourable dental treatments in an excellent atmosphere, without having to experience a reduction in quality. Tenerife residents can enjoy this advantage throughout the year, while those from Central Europe prefer to use a few days of their holiday to see him. They are also aware that there’s a saving of up to 70% for his professional treatment.
Dr Patron is steeped in dental experience, and he’s always upto-date with the latest developments, which is why he is proving so popular at Medical Implant, albeit for one day a week. In the Oxford area, the father of two is engaged in public dental health, and he’s particularly involved in preventive measures among the younger generation. But he has also dedicated himself to dental aesthetics, and practising dental treatments in an easy-going atmosphere is his priority. That explains why the doctor is happy to embrace a 4,000-mile round-trip to Tenerife every week. His patients, especially those from England, enjoy the advantage of knowing that he lives in Oxford and is available for them. This can remove all the fear, especially if they are concerned about possible aftereffects following a dental implant, for example. That’s not to forget his patients here, who also know they can refer back to him at any time … on Wednesdays, anyway!

Liberty brokers, stars of the show THE new Liberty Seguros press advertising campaign for 2016 has been launched. And this year, the “stars” of the campaign are the actual brokers and agents themselves!
It’s a nice ‘twist’ from Liberty, which believes that its intermediaries (another name for agents and brokers) should feature strongly in their marketing campaigns because they are at the core of the Liberty Seguros insurance business. A specially-created micro-site was designed for the intermediaries to access, where they were able to vote for the “real
look and feel” of a true insurance intermediary. They voted for the person they felt could represent the look of a real intermediary, from a selection of photographic models. Two men and two women were chosen. They also selected the look and style for the models. The results were conclusive, the winning choice being a smart but casual look. Following the online voting, the chosen mod-
els were invited to a photo shoot and were dressed to fit the chosen smart-but-casual look. The resultant images are now being used in the press campaign which will run, in different formats, throughout this year, including the current promo ads, where as much as 50 euros can be saved on car, home and life insurance. As Iván Ortego, Intermediaries Experience Director, pointed out,
“We value the amazing support that all our agents and brokers give to Liberty Seguros and, of course, to all our valued customers, who are insured by Liberty Seguros. “What better way to get them involved in our business strategy for 2016? We would like to thank them for their involvement in this project.” Liberty Seguros has over 300 expat intermediaries in Spain, providing professional customers’ advice on any insurance matter, including car, home, life, marine, leisure, pet, as well as business and commercial covers. Go to www.libertyexpatriates.es or call 902 255 258 for the name of your nearest LIBERTY SEGUROS broker.

Our eager young beavers IN the first three months of the year, we entertained more than 1,000 children, aged 3-12, from various schools in the surrounding boroughs, who took part in our Educational programme.
And a further 600 children have been booked in until the end of May. This is a huge undertaking by all Accion staff, on top of our heavy workload, taking care of the 200-plus dogs in the refuge. But we feel that educating the youngsters is so important towards the future of animal welfare on the Island. That is why we are delighted to learn that many of the participating schools and colleges have added animal
welfare to their normal curriculum. Chips all round One lucky dog was reunited with his overjoyed owner last week, and we can never express enough the importance of microchipping your pet with updated information should you move, or change telephone numbers. Home, sweet home Three happy dogs, sporting their newly-
knitted jackets - courtesy of Mary Irvine - jetted off to Germany last week to be rehomed there. And, with a slight increase in normal adoptions and the generous donations of towels and blankets from our many supporters and hotels, we had an extremely positive week. Pathetic puppies On a sadder note, we are still receiving puppies found in a dreadful
state - via the Protection Civil police. The poor pups are still far too young to be away from their mothers. Please be responsible pet owners and do not allow yours to breed. Ensure your dog is sterilised or castrated. Grateful thanks We are so thankful for all the support we receive from our many volunteers and supporters of all nationalities.
You help us in so many ways … adoptions, dogwalking, plus donations of bedding, sheets and towels. With love from Tom
Helping Hands’ Stephanie Tudge (right), presents the 10,000-euro cheque to Asunción Atienza Sánchez, Director of the rehabilitation centre
Helping Hands backs another worthy cause LOCAL charity Helping Hands, which supports disadvantaged and handicapped children in Tenerife, has donated a whopping 10,000 euros to La Oratava’s Crevo Rehabilitation Centre.
The money will pay for a specialised commu-
nication computer and other essential equipment for the youngsters there. Liz Montague, who runs the charity, said: “Thank you to everyone who supports Helping Hands with all the work we carry out, from project work to supporting centres in need on the Island. The Director was absolutely thrilled with our donation.”
WE received a wonderful message this week from one of our “customers” which we would love to share with you. Hello Sharon, Theresa and Co. I know you see a huge number of cats, and I don’t expect you to remember me. But my name is Tom, and I felt I had to send a great big thank-you to Cats Welfare from me. I was a stray and in a terrible state - hungry, dirty and full of hormones I didn’t want, until my Auntie Michelle found me and gave me some food. As I was unhappy I wouldn’t let her near me. I would hiss and attack her, without realising all she wanted to do was help me. She told me she had asked Cats Welfare to lend her a trap, and, although I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I have felt so much better since my trip to the vet. It has taken me months but, finally, I trusted her to let her touch me, and
only this week she has been able to stroke me. Today I made a funny sound called purring. Auntie said it was the first time she’d heard me do it. I rubbed all round her and went all silly, it felt really nice. Even better news, I have been adopted by the owner of the garden I go in. She’s a nice lady, who loves cats. As she isn’t here all the time, Auntie Michelle feeds me twice a day while she’s away, and now gives me cuddles. By the way, my coat looks lovely, all shiny and clean, I’m such a handsome boy. Auntie says that when she remembers to bring her camera she will take a photo of me. Thanks again. Cats Welfare. With your help, I now have a happy, content future to look forward to. Lots of love, Tom xxx Can you adopt? Would you like to adopt a cat or kitten? Full details and pictures
of all those available can be found on our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife/pets. If you would like to adopt one or find out more about our fostering programme, please call or Whatsapp Theresa on 680 475 500 (9am-6pm, every day), or message us on our website www.cats-wel-
fare-tenerife.com/contacts Donations welcomed We always need stock for our charity shop, so if you have good quality/ condition items, drop them into the shop on San Blas, in Golf del Sur (Behind HiperDino). It is open seven days a week, from 10am-6pm; Saturdays, 11am-4pm.
Lions’ monthly bash ARONA’S Las Galletas & Costa del Silencio Lions Club is holding its monthly fundraiser at the Albatros Bar in Silencio on Sunday (10th April) from 2pm. Dreamers nearly on canvas
THERE were two fiercely-contested Tenerife Pool Tables Plate semi-finals this week - and almost one big shock from outsiders Picasso’s!
Palms Bar hosted the contests, and not many people gave Picasso’s much of a chance against Dreamers A. But boy, did they give the Division One side a fright. Wayne took the opening frame for Picasso’s, and the Torviscas team were jumping when Stevie chinned Gav. Not literally, of course! It soon became 3-0 as
Pete got the better of Man United Mark, with Picasso’s playing without fear and taking their chances. Frame four saw Mark A in total control against Roy. However, he jawed a simple-looking black and Picasso´s were smelling another frame. Roy was facing a straight yellow into the middle pocket and, with the last two balls over the bags, it was a gimme. But the yellow hit the knuckle and rolled away. Mark lapped up the gift and the tide turned. Dreamers took the next three frames to lead 4-3, only for Picasso’s to roar back! God knows what was in
Collins and Benn, in wars and peace TWO-TIME world boxing champion Steve Collins has been relaxing on holiday here with his son this week, ahead of his 16th April Showtime performance with former arch-rival Nigel Benn for “An Evening With”. Steve, who found time to nip into Oasis Fm to chat with Roscoe, said: “This is the first time I have been to Tenerife and, I´ve got to say, I am very taken with the place already! “I´m here with my son, Luke, who is going to have his first amateur fight next week. I have spoken with some people about bringing him back over and doing some training here.” Collins revealed how much he was looking forward to seeing Benn again. The two friends haven’t seen too much of each other since they last fought, over 20 years ago. Irishman Collins said: “Nigel has a great life in Australia now. He really is a reformed character, and it will be wonderful to have this night with him. We have lots
of stories and it´s funny in boxing. You spend all that time hitting each other in the head and then, when it´s over, you give each other a hug and become pals.” The “Evening With” will see both champions talking about their careers and, of course, their two contests, both won by Collins. “That was a long time ago,” recalled Collins. “But even I know people always want to talk about those fights, and some of my other wars. “When you get that look from the younger ones, the kids, you see them going on Google and then BANG! They know all about you! Everything! It´s strange!” Tickets are priced 60150 euros and are available from www.showtimetenerife.com or call 649 081 211
their beer, but Ken levelled the match. Steve and Gav took frames for Dreamers, only for Pete to make it 6-5. This brought captain
Fran to the baize. She needed to beat Man United Mark to force a play-off, but it proved a bridge too far. But Picasso’s can still be
proud of the 7-5 scoreline. In the Plate Final on 19th April at Amarilla Golf’s Terrace Bar, Dreamers will face Gaf-
fers B who brushed aside Rewind Rewired. The Division Two side have been brilliant in 2016, but they were never in it as Gaffers B put away every chance they had. Rich and Wilson gave them the perfect start and, though Tony took the third frame, Rewind looked nervy. A mistake by Roger gifted Gaffers frame four, but he made up for it by taking frame five. At 3-2 down, Rewind must have thought they were back in it, but Gaffers B found another gear. Wilson, Harry and Ben took important frames before Harry sunk black No. 9 to book Gaffers’ place in the Final.
Ñandu’s Derby delight Ñandu RC 45 The Boatmen, El Medano 0
IT was Derby Day at T3 (Tenerife Top Training) with unbeaten league leaders Ñandu facing a powerful El Medano side, who had lost just one match so far in the Canarian Under-18s competition. Victory for Ñandu would seal first place in the league phase; a win for The Boatmen would put them into second place, with a semi-final against Las Palmas to decide the final positions. So, all to play for in an exciting encounter between two local teams. The open exchanges saw both packs battle for dominance at the breakdown, with Ñandu’s back-row putting in an excellent shift. Ñandu’s back-line took time to settle as they implemented the new game plan, devised by coaches Jamie Whelan and Rachael Watson, who have spent the last few weeks on tactical control. On a narrow pitch, an opening was created for full-back Francisco Ferryra for his maiden
try. And further tries came from David Tevosyan and Eduardo Umpierrez, who scored two. Winger Tevosyan, playing only his fifth game of rugby, looked assured under the high ball as he countered with purpose, constantly keeping the Boatmen defence guessing. And Ñandu benefited from the creative play and ambition of centres Ryan Cox and Gabriel Trujilio. Ryan powered through tackles to score his first try of the season. And Trujilio kicked four conversions to add a further
eight points to the scoreboard, captain Jacob Oakenfold rounding off the game with a conversion of his own. The remaining two tries came from Facundo Patsouris, taking his try tally to nine this season. Special mention must go to the pack, who dominated the scrum yet again. Their constant pressure, led by tight-head Gregorio Prieto, ensured that the backs had a platform on which to perform. The final score of 45-0 was testament to the efforts put in by the players, especially in the first half. The
Boatmen rallied in the second, and proved how good they are by continuously testing the Ñandu defensive line and making incisive breaks to put the home side under pressure. Despite the scoreline, Ñandu will have had much to work on as they prepared for the match against Fuerteventura tomorrow (Saturday), kicking off at 2pm in El Galeon, Adeje. Everyone welcome! If you would like further information about joining Ñandu, or have any ideas to help the boys, please contact Paul on 664 361 058.

Lucky Tenerife, at last CD Tenerife 1 CD Lugo 0 By Roscoe IT’S in the breeze. That light sensation that strokes the cheek, ruffles the hair and leaves behind the slight whiff of possibility.
Racing fans get this when they clock their jockey sitting motionless on their horse, tucked away behind a wall of flesh at the two furlong pole.
There is no label for this feeling, this winter warmer. But we all know where it can take you. This win was Tenerife’s first in three matches, but stretched their unbeaten run to seven. It´s also five matches since Dani had to pluck the ball out of his net. But make no mistake, this was no gimme. Lugo are a decent, welldrilled side who took some beating. And they are still arguing that they were robbed. To the naked eye, Suso looked level with
the last defender some 20 minutes from time when he latched on to a through-ball and swatted the ball past goalie Jose Juan. But TV replays showed that Tenerife´s captain may have been a yard too early. It´s not as though Tenerife didn’t deserve a bit of luck because they have been on the end of some shockers this season. But it was a big slice of luck. And I don´t care how good you are, every successful side need the sporting Gods to do them a solid from time to time. Tenerife are now three points off the play-offs and have that most vital of ingredients: momentum. League leaders Alaves are next - but on this run, Tenerife will relish the challenge.

Showtime’s double-top night AND so it was that a 10-month, extremelysuccessful, Oasis Fm Darts League season drew to a close with an almighty bang, crash and wallop at Showtime, in Las Americas. The event’s legendary status again drew a huge 200-plus crowd, despite Canarian Weekly’s masterful April Fool’s joke informing us that we had to leave the Island! However, the evening got under way with the stage packed with trophies, darters, chalkers and some very attractive walk-on girls (and announcers, of course!). The Memorial Trophy finals saw Gio, from Pas O’Nadas B, picking up the first silverware of the night with a 2-0 win over Ourplace Playgirls’ Shar in the Ladies’ showdown.
After being wined and dined handsomely, courtesy of Showtime’s excellent hospitality, an excited crowd were treated to a full-on set from well-known artiste, Tony Kay, aka Gary Barlow. Even committee member Chas was seen strutting his stuff, despite a recent hip replacement! Other highlights in-
cluded Phoenix’s London borrowing a Zimmer frame from Chas, and people taking photos of Roscoe doing a selfie with two of the walk-on girls. You had to be there, I suppose! Back to the darts, and the Division 2 Memorial Trophy final proved to be a close battle between Summerlands’ Adam, and Rob, from
Spear Chuckers. At two apiece and both players on a double, you could have cut the atmosphere with a knife. But a delighted Adam pinged in double 1 to snatch the second pot of the night. Moving on to the Division 1 contest, a rather one-sided affair saw Gaffers’ Joe beat Phoenix’s Steve 4-0. It wouldn’t have been so one-sided had Steve been able to hit a double! Big-match nerves, I guess.
So, to the highlight of the evening and the presentation of 43 trophies, claimed by teams and individuals over the course of the campaign. Each and every one was accepted gleefully, and none of them dropped - despite a few wobbly legs! Events were finally rounded off with a huge pile of raffle prizes, which included a 32in TV and a clock! All of which, combined with the darts’ entry fees, and a special donation
from Joy Clubley, added up to a magnificent charity fund of just over 2,000 euros. This was gratefully received by Carol and Dave, representatives from the magnificent Cancer Bus Charity. That just leaves me to offer thanks to our sponsors, Oasis Fm, Canarian Weekly, all the Showtime crew, the chalkers, players, walkon girls, and everyone who donated to a very worthy cause. Shall we do it all again next time? You bet. And here’s how. Team registrations can be sent to oasisfmdarts@ hotmail.com Our 2016-17 AGM is on Sunday, 1st May, at Bar El Ritual in Los Abrigos, and the new season starts on Friday, 13th May. Let’s play darts again!

Premier League preview
Hammers could jazz it up
By Adi Benson IT was another weekend that cemented the Premier League’s claim to being the most exciting league in the world … and another step closer to an unlikely winner! West Ham v Arsenal Hammers, disappointed to drop points last weekend against Palace, are three points behind the Champions League places. A win against Arsenal, though, could really make the run-in even more exciting. They are difficult to beat at home and, with Payet in form, teams fear them. Arsenal played well against Watford, but they are too far off the pace to be included in the title race. Again, patchy form and injuries have cost them. But with Wenger in charge, I just can’t see how they will ever be more that a fourth of third-placed team. Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-2 Aston Villa v Bournemouth Dependent on results elsewhere, Villa’s relegation could be confirmed if they lose this one. It has been a very poor season for them, but most disappointing is their lack of fight over the last 9-10 games. They are lacking that team mentality, and you can see players just waiting
until they can jump ship. Bournemouth have coped well this season in the face of adversity after serious injuries to key players. A win would see them surpass the magical 40-point total, guaranteeing their Premier place next season - not that it is under threat because they have done more than enough to stay up. Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A Crystal Palace v Norwich Palace, without a win in their last 10 games, really are on a slippery slope at the minute. And if a couple of the clubs below them put together a good run, they could find themselves in a genuine relegation scrap. Pardew needs to get them firing again after showing some good, early-season promise. Norwich are on a roll and, thanks to successive wins, they have put four places between themselves and the relegation zone. If they can secure another victory here, they will draw level on points with Palace - and they are the team with momentum! Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A
Southampton v Newcastle Saints, battling for a Europa League spot, need three points to keep the pressure on their rivals. When you are looking for points yourself, the last teams you want to face are
those fighting for survival - and Newcastle are doing just that! But Southampton have a good solid defence, which should see them through. Newcastle will be deflated after last week’s last-gasp defeat, especially after coming from behind twice. They need to dust themselves down and put in a fighting performance. They can’t be distracted by what their rivals are doing, and Rafa must keep their heads up to collect a much-needed win. Prediction: Draw Last season: 4-0 Swansea v Chelsea Swansea have just about dragged themselves over the line in terms of survival, after a worrying spell towards the bottom, and their ship was steadied by a managerial change. With nothing left to play for, they can now turn their attention to next season and make sure they bring in players to ensure a higher-placed finish. Chelsea, on a great run, are unbeaten in their last 10 league outings, which has enabled them to reach the top half of the table. And, depending on the teams around them, they are still in with an outside chance of a possible Europa League place. With Antonio Conte confirmed as their new manager for next season, European
football would be bonus. Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-5

Watford v Everton Watford have had a yoyo season in the top division. They started slowly, yet moved into the top half of the table. But goals from their prolific strikers have dried up in recent weeks, and they have slid backwards. If the season were to run a couple of games longer, they could be really looking over their shoulder. But they have just done enough to stay up. Everton are still flattering to deceive, and their fans expected more than a bottom-half-of-thetable finish. They have a young team who were doing well early in the season. But they have really fallen off the pace, and, with rumours of Lukaku moving on in the summer, they will need all that new investment to replace him. Prediction: Draw Last season: N/A Man City v West Brom City have disappointed this season after a dip in form, and some have pointed out that it coincided with the De Bruyne injury. They have looked a much better side since his return. But even with a game in hand, they are still too far behind Leicester to be challenging for the league. They must hope Guardiola hits
the ground running when he takes over. West Brom are comfortable in midtable and I suppose, given their squad and investment, it is not a bad place to be. It looks like Berahino, who will depart in the summer, could bring in a decent price, so money should be available to invest in the squad. But will Tony Pulis be in charge, or will the Baggies’ board make another change? Prediction: Home win Last season: 3-0 Sunderland v Leicester Sunderland have had draws in their last four league games, but it hasn’t hauled them closer to safety because rivals Norwich have been winning. They are four points from safety and need to get a win, but this will be a big task against these opponents. Leicester are now seven points clear at the top after Spurs dropped points, but at this stage, they must take nothing for granted. One game at a time is the key, and a win in the North East would put extra pressure on Spurs, who have another tricky game. Four wins in their last six games will take the title for the Foxes. Prediction: Draw Last season: 0-0 Spurs v Man Utd Spurs dropped points against Liverpool and know they cannot do the same again. They have been strong at home, and
it will be interesting to see how they approach this match. Do they go for early goals, or do they sit back and counterattack? They simply must get their tactics right. United are still chasing a Champions League spot, which makes them a difficult team to face, especially when you want vital points yourself. Their performance against Everton wasn’t the best, but they got the win and will step their game up here because they know it won’t be easy. Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-0 Liverpool v Stoke Liverpool come into this match after a tough Europa League clash against Borussia Dortmund, and that spells tired legs. Klopp doesn’t have too much strength in depth, but he may choose to rest some of the more senior players in anticipation of the second leg, especially as winning the Europa League represents their best chance of Champions League football. Stoke are ahead of Liverpool in the league table and hope to keep it that way. The flair players, who have recovered some of their form, will cause the Liverpool defence problems. The last league match at Anfield saw them score six! Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-0

Who can match Ranieri? WE returned to Premier League action at the weekend after the international break - and the matches are now being ticked off as we approach the end of the season.
Claudio Ranieri looks likely to finish as best manager in the actual league, but who will be named Best Manager in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League? It was certainly a
weekend for goals and, with a good win over Aston Villa, the Chelsea players shone. Three of them picked up enough points to be named in the point-scoring team of the week. Arsenal and table-toppers Leicester were hot on their heels with two players each, and the remainder comprised players from West Brom, Norwich, West Ham and Newcastle. Local boy Pedro came out on top, playerwise, with a great total of 16 points. It has been fairly stagnant at the top of the
league, but this week we saw a little movement. The top two stayed the same, but Warren Wilson grabbed third spot from David Retberg, who dropped to fourth. Elodie Townsend, highlighted a couple of weeks ago as the highest-placed woman, has kept on scoring consistently and has moved to sixth, with Matthew Potts right behind her in seventh. This means Trevor Passingham has dropped to eighth after performing so well for
the majority of the season. Jo Green’s Early Bird’s were team of the week. A wildcard was played, but the team were selected really well as they came in with a massive 91 points. It was a decent, allround performance from all the players, but Bellerin with 14 points, Azpilicueta (11), Sanchez (14) and Aguero (14) contributed over half that total - in fact, 53 points altogether! With only a handful of games remaining, don’t forget you still have certain point-boosters
available, so make sure you play them to take full advantage.
They might just be the difference come the end of the season.
