Los Cristianos horror Continued from Front At around 9.30am, the four-storey building at Edificio Julian Jose, on Calle Valle Menendez where the popular Boothen Bar is situated, imploded as some work was being done on the ground floor in the old branch of the Banesto bank. It was reduced to a huge pile of rubble in a matter of seconds. Local Police, who were swiftly on the scene, started evacuating nearby buildings. Within an hour, more than 50 emergency vehicles and two air ambulances had been scrambled, and five police rescue dogs were deployed. However, the rescue effort was delayed as firefighters checked the safety of nearby structures. A cherry-picker was used to transport firemen on to balconies and the roof. Along with the Local Police, there were Na-
tional Police and Guardia Civil officers on the ground, Council workers and emergency staff set up barriers and guarded the perimeter, and Red Cross workers were also available to assist any walking wounded. Arona Council activated an Emergency Alert at Level 3 and Nevis Barreto, the Canary Islands’ Minister of Security and Emergency, travelled to the scene. Canarian Prime Minister Fernando Clavijo suspended his agenda promptly to attend the Los Cristianos site. As we go to print, the Canary Islands Government says there are no fatalities. But three people were injured, including a 57-year-old woman, who suffered serious damage to an arm. A 28-year-old Italian man was hospitalised for a shoulder injury while a third victim, a woman of 55, was treated for severe shock. The
Government also confirmed that nine people were still unaccounted for. Arona Mayor José Julián Mena, expressed “shock and sadness” at the incident. One witness, who said he heard a loud bang and then the building collapsed, followed by screams, added: “The image of the Twin Towers came to mind.” Initially, the collapse was thought to have been sparked by a gas leak, but police swiftly ruled this out after discovering the work taking place on the ground floor. Conny Vogl, an estate agent at Premier Properties, on the nearby Church Square, told Canarian Weekly: “We heard a big boom, and another one two minutes later. But we couldn’t see a thing because the air was thick with dust. “When it cleared, we
went o u t side and could see the whole building had fallen down completely. It was absolutely horrible.” She added: “There were ambulances and fire-engines everywhere. A woman was crying in the street, so I comforted her and got a drink of water. “She told me her brother had been sleeping in the building, and was told they had been unable to reach him yet.” Ange Mowberry, who works around the corner in Dreamers Bar, said: “I was shopping in the Coviran supermarket, and, though there
was no noise, I saw t h e guy on the till run, so I ran after him and hid between two units. “When I opened my eyes I couldn’t see a thing, and I had to edge my way out of the building, literally. Luckily, I was able to get clear, but it left me shaking. It really was frightening.” Another eye witness, Javier Velazquez, who owns the Hide Away pub next door and lives in a flat above his bar, said: “My whole terrace has been obliterated. No one was on the terrace because I don’t open till 5pm. But if this had happened in the evening, it would have been far worse. “The noise when the building collapsed was tremendous. There was
work going on in an old commercial premises on the ground floor, and I fear what’s happened could be something to do with that. “There were three separate collapses, the second being the loudest. After the third - and when the huge cloud of smoke cleared - I saw a woman shouting in Spanish who appeared trapped. It will certainly take a while for the emergency services to finish their search of the rubble, and then the job of finding out why this happened will begin. In the meantime, scores of people have been left homeless or are unable to return home. The Council has installed temporary facilities near the incident and, yesterday afternoon, local hotels were offering beds for those who had nowhere to stay the night.

King Felipe’s final bid for a new government KING Felipe VI will hold fresh talks with Spain’s political leaders on Monday and Tuesday next week (25-26th April) in a bid to determine a ruling party for the country.
It will be the Spanish monarch’s third attempt with top politicians to settle the issue of who will be Prime Minister. On Thursday (21st April), house speaker Patxi López will hand the King a list of representatives to meet with him on the selected dates. Felipe, following an inconclusive General Election on 20th December, has held two rounds of talks, asking
two leaders to submit their names for the post of Prime Minister in a congressional vote. The first, acting PM Mariano Rajoy, of the Popular Party (PP), refused to do so. And the second, Socialist Pedro Sánchez, tried and failed. Now, with a Parliament dissolution deadline coming up, and a new call to polling stations, the King will try to determine if there is another last-minute candidate with enough congressional backing for a successful run in office. If not, a new election will be staged on 26th June, although polls suggest another inconclusive outcome - and a lower turn-out. But, following months of failed cross-party talks, there is little hope that a deal will
emerge in time to avert another election. Rajoy’s former ruling party, PP, which holds the most seats in Congress, has failed to attract a single party to form a government. The Socialists finalised a deal with Ciudadanos, but they still need a third group’s support. Podemos officials refuse to provide this backing, preferring instead a coalition of themselves, the PSOE, United Left and other regional leftist groups. The deadline for reaching a last-minute deal is 2nd May. And should a nominee step up, Congress will hold a double vote: one to attempt an overall majority of 176 seats, and, failing that, another one for a simple majority.
Why film crews go wild for our Island BRITISH crews for Doctor Who and The Only Way is Essex were among the 88 local and international film production companies who used Tenerife for their locations last year.
It was an increase of 20 on the 2014 total and the figures, released by Tenerife Film Commission, show that 16 of those shoots were from the UK. All these production firms, enticed by the Island’s tax incentives, landscape varieties and around 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, helped Tenerife generated record revenues of 19 million euros in 2015. That was an astonishing increase of 11m euros on 2014 - and
reaffirms the Island’s position as an inviting location prospect for TV and film-production crews. The Film Commission, Tenerife Tourism Corporation’s brand responsible for promoting the Island as a filming location, also revealed that the UK ranked third, on 16, in
the list of countries using locations on the Island last year. Germany was tops with 24, followed by Spain, 17, and all the productions included films, short films, TV series, advertising and photo shoots. The BBC’s Doctor Who crew filmed at the volcanic landscapes of
Teide National Park, while the girls from ITVBe’s The Only Way is Essex enjoyed some sun and cocktails at the upmarket resort of Costa Adeje. Channel 4 cashed in with A Place in the Sun, as again did ITV’s Take Me Out, whose matching couples made the most of the romantic
side of the so-called “Isle of Fernando’s”. In terms of box-office hits last year, Tenerife welcomed Hollywood star Matt Damon, who shot action scenes in Santa Cruz for Jason Bourne, the fifth instalment of the Bourne series, which should be in cinemas this summer. Previous blockbust-
ers filmed in Tenerife include Fast & Furious 6 (2012), featuring Vin Diesel (pictured); Wrath of the Titans (2011) and Clash of the Titans (2010), with Liam Neeson and Sam Worthington, as well as One Million Years B.C. (1966), which helped launch Raquel Welch to global stardom. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said: “The latest figures are a clear boost for Tenerife’s economy. “The filming benefits the Island’s tourism and audio-visual sectors, especially, is the result of the work we have carried out over the last 16 years to position Tenerife as an outstanding, international, filming destination.” Tenerife has welcomed and accommodated a total of 1,126 local and international productions since 2000. And there will surely be more to come!

Canaries can flourish with e-commerce THE Canarian economy appears to have a positive outlook for the future, despite a few dark clouds on the horizon, according to the Foundation Savings Banks association (Func).
Its annual report states that the economy is moving in the right direction, though warning that some traditional imbalances need addressing, and that certain weaknesses remain. Tourism, which remains the jewel in the crown, defied the years of economic crisis and actually grew during that woeful spell. And, despite the dangers of concentrating on a single “golden egg” sector, tourism is the main
architect of the Canary Islands’ gross domestic product (GDP). In 2015, it was “about the same level” as that recorded in 2008, and Func research suggests that the Canary economy will close this year with a 3% growth. “In itself, the highest level of specialisation of an economy sector is not a problem, but it does make it more vulnerable to cycles and factors, both internal and external,” say the authors. Researchers James Rodriguez, Celia Davila, Alejandro Rodriguez and Margarita Tejera, of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, believe the Canarian authorities should address and challenge “the historical lack of diversification of the economy”. They add: “There is a need to favour industrial development linked to
the Canarian agricultural products, plus renewable energies, and to start exporting more to the neighbouring continent.” They also believe it is necessary for some diversification within the services sector by promoting “new activities and business models which are, fundamentally, based on new technologies”. Even tourism, they say, can benefit from these innovations. As an example, the study cites e-commerce, “which, to date, Canary entrepreneurs and consumers are clearly outside the market and in danger of being left behind”. The researchers also call for the elimination of administrative barriers, and to integrate the Archipelago fully in global electronic commerce.
Diabetes is rife among Spanish DIABETES is a lot more commonplace in Spain than most people there believe. Yet 13.8% of Spaniards, over the age of 18, suffer from the disease’s Type-2 form. That figure equates to more than 5.3 million people, or 5% of the Spanish population. And, most alarmingly, 43% of Spaniards are unaware that they are suffering from the illness. By the time a diagnosis is made, over half of the patients have complications, strictly because of a lack of knowledge about diabetes.
With an early diagnosis, the treatment of these complications is more effective. Important organs are affected, including the kidneys, eyes and heart, as well as the nervous system. It is especially prevalent among the elderly, with 42.4% of men, aged 61-75, suffering Type2 diabetes, against the 29.8% of female sufferers in the same age group. Of those aged 75 and over, the percentage rises to 41.3% while, conversely, the number of men of this age who suffer drops to 37.4%. Another concern is that 12.6% of Span-
iards - more than five million people - have a problem with glucose levels. Some 9.2% people suffer from glucose intolerance, and 3.4% have blood-sugar levels which, experts consider, to be pre-diabetic. It is well known that obesity and Type-2 diabetes go hand-inhand. So it is alarming that, according to the study data, 28.2% of the Spanish population are obese, which equates to more than 13 million people. In addition, 41.2% of Spaniards (19 million people) suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure); 20.82% have metabolic syndrome, and 9% have microalbuminuria, both of which are diabetes-related diseases. But despite the alarming numbers, most people with the disease don’t really monitor their health - or change their lifestyle!

Transport chief set to ease Adeje traffic jam ELÍAS Castro, Regional Transport Director, visited Adeje this week to see for himself the problems created by traffic in tourist zones throughout the South.
Castro met Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, together with Ermitas Moreira and Andrés Pérez, Tourism and Transport Councillors respectively, with a view to resolving the situation. “Our Department of Traffic do understand that one of the most pressing problems is to maintain fluid traffic movement in the Canarian tourist regions,” said the transport chief. “There are many residents working in the sector, as well as the tourists themselves, and these tourist zones support an incredible volume of traffic - private buses and hirecars, taxis, etc.
“For that reason, it is important for us to see the situation for ourselves, talk to local councils about their concerns and how we can introduce changes in the regulation and organisation of the transport sector itself. ” Mayor Fraga added: “It is fundamental for us to combine the mark of quality tourism with the quality of the infrastructures: services, complementary offers, transport and mobility. “This is essential if we
are to continue attracting visitors because it is one of the demands of tourists and also of those who live here.” As a result of these meetings, a working group will be set up, with representatives from the relevant councils, to discuss actual problems and resolutions. In turn, it is hoped that it will lead to fresh laws and traffic regulations, designed to meet today’s needs and problems.

EU ‘come-clean’ plans point to top companies A SCHEME to force the European Union’s largest companies to disclose more about their tax affairs was unveiled on Tuesday by an EU financial services commission.
It affects multi-nationals firms with annual sales of more than 750m euros, who must detail how much tax they pay, in which EU countries, as well as any activities carried out in specific tax havens. The plans come amid heightened scrutiny of the use of tax havens, following the Panama Papers revelations. Lord Hill, the EU’s financial services commissioner, said: “This is a carefully-thoughtthrough, but ambitious proposal, for more transparency on tax. “While our proposal on country-by-country reporting is not, of course, focused principally on the response to the Panama Papers, there is an important connection between our continuing work on tax transparency and tax havens we are building into the proposal.” Country-by- country reporting rules already apply to banks, mining and forestry companies, according to an EU spokesperson. Under the new proposals, that will be expanded to cover companies accounting for about 90% of corporate revenues in the EU. It is understood that
companies will need to disclose information such as total net turnover, profit before tax, income tax due, amount of tax actually paid and accumulated earnings. The changes come after G20 leaders agreed to follow an action plan by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to tackle corporate tax minimisation. But it sure to be controversial because the scheme would oblige companies to report what they earn, and how much tax they pay, in EU countries. It would also force them to reveal details of their tax affairs in “third countries which do not respect internationaltax, good-governance standards”. In other words, secretive tax havens. But companies using artificial structures to avoid or minimise tax, or to shelter their gains in tax havens, would be fully exposed to public scrutiny. The old legalistic argument that they pay all the tax they owe might not be enough to deflect bad publicity. But how can it be decided which regions’ tax laws aren’t up to scratch? Last year, the Commission published a blacklist of 30 “nonco-operative jurisdictions”. The move was condemned by the OECD head, who described the criteria used as “unfair and subjective”.
Homes’ problem eases THERE is good news for some of the 14,000plus people on the waiting list for council homes in the Canary Islands because several new apartments have been planned. Jesus Gregorio Perez, head of the Canarian Government’s Housing Department, has announced the building of 759 new homes in the Archipelago. Of these, 490 will be constructed in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 269 in the Las Palmas province. At the moment the Canarian Government has 27,000 homes, including 5,000 leased from public company Visocan.
Perez said: “Except for those properties left empty for various reasons, such as the death of their owners, which are being recovered to give to other families occupying the top of the waiting list, all the accommodation is taken.” The Town Planning Department says the matter of squatters in 30 homes will be taken care of. Perez believes the construction of new homes is one of the most important projects for the Canarian Executive, and he plans to respond to the long waiting list of applicants for social flats in the islands.
Home sales soaring HOME sales went up 18.6% in the Canary Islands during February, against the corresponding month in 2015 - a total of 1,592 new transactions.
The figure was derived from data released by the National Statistics
Institute (INE). And, in fact, February home sales rose in all regions except in La Rioja and Castilla y Leon, which dropped by 8.6% and 3.9% respectively. But the figures increased most notably in the Basque Country (50,3%), Asturias (40%) and Cantabria (38.9%). This is reflected by the sales of housing rising
15.8% on average over the same month of 2015, to 34,771 - the highest number of transactions in three years. Along with the top three, the highest rates of annual change in the number of home sales in February corresponds with the Balearic Islands (32.9%), Murcia (31.2%), Navarra (31.2%), Community of Valencia (27.5%),
Galicia (26.3%), Castilla-La Mancha (24.3%) and Extremadura (21.6%). Sales increased to a lesser extent in Madrid (3.1%), Andalusia (8.1%), Cataluña (12.6%) Aragon (16.1%) and Canaries (18.6%). The total properties sold, per 100,000 population, came tops in La Rioja (746) and Aragon (723).
Adeje’s in harmony with Lustral groups ADEJE has marked the end of its “Lustral Year”, a celebration that takes place every five years in honour of the Virgen de la Encarnación, one of the area’s patron saints.
It finished with a gathering of all of those who work in the borough’s villages and neighbourhoods to prepare for each visit of the Saint. Also included were the many groups who toiled during the last 12 months on different aspects of the 2016 events. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, during a celebration of “harmonious co-existence”, said: “The third Lustral year of visits of the Virgen de La Encarnación has become a symbol of the solidarity between the different peoples who live in Adeje. “They continue to work with us towards the creation of a community based on solidarity, team-work and personal and collective growth.
He added: “So many people were involved and, for that reason, we have asked them here to thank them. And we ask them to continue to work with us in the evolution of our town, along this chosen path.” The ceremony took
place in the Parque Jardín Botánico, where diplomas were given to representatives from all the neighbourhood and resident associations, the children’s courts, folk groups and other groups involved during the year. A number of indi-
vidual prizes were also awarded. The Lustral prize for Creativity was won by the team which stages the re-enactment of The Passion of Christ in Adeje every Good Friday, drawing annual Easter crowds by the thousand. The Lustral prize for Solidarity went to the Manos Unidas group, which helps the borough’s poorer folk, while the Honour Lustral prize was awarded to Juan Navarro, who has worked tirelessly in the community for years.

Spanish ambassador had eyes on The Vatican
GOD-SMACKED
The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Don’t miss it! THE sporting stars have been out in force in Tenerife again this week. The allconquering Team Sky cyclists have been pounding the streets and climbs towards Teide.
And double Tour de France winner Chris Froome, the reigning champion, seems to have enjoyed himself, judging by all the tweets he has been sharing with his many followers. That is great news for Tenerife. Pictures of the team training under clear blue skies will get others on the plane. “I want to ride where Froome rides,” will be in many an amateur’s mind. It’s one of the reasons former European boxing champion and current Sky Sports commentator Jamie Moore was here this week. He heard about the facilities in Tenerife, came, enjoyed and is now on his 40th visit. Most of the boxing camps here can be traced back to Nigel Benn’s trips here in the early Nineties. He blazed a trail that
has been followed by numerous champions since. And, as I’m sure you are now aware, Nigel is back in Tenerife this weekend. He will join fellow boxing legend Steve Collins for a Sportsman’s Evening at Showtime tomorrow (Saturday). Nigel now lives in Australia, and he is making a rare trip to Europe. He was ringside when his son, Conor, made his professional debut in London last weekend. It was the perfect excuse to sneak in a little trip here, and Benn is bringing his son as well. Nigel told me on Oasis Fm last week: “I want him to actually see how fierce the run up to Teide is! I’ve told him so many times, and now he can see what his old man use to do. “Mind you, this time I will be in the car at the back, watching him doing the running!” It promises to be an amazing night with two legends, who have so much character and so many tales to tell. And when I say this is a one-off, it really is. Last-minute tickets are available by calling 649 081 211.

THE Spanish ambassador to Belgium has been sacked, amid allegations of having no contact with its government during his tenure, the continual harassment of his staff - and his desire to work for The Pope!
Ignacio Jesús Matellanes Martínez has been relieved of his duties, on the grounds of “absenteeism and abuse of power”, following repeated complaints from embassy staff. “He didn’t represent the country at all,” said an embassy source. “Nobody comes here. Matellanes doesn’t have meetings with anyone. He does nothing, and prevents staff from taking even the smallest initiative.” The Spanish Foreign Ministry said he had “burned all his bridges” with the Belgian Government, adding that he had showed similar failings during a previous posting to Nicaragua. In a report to the Foreign Ministry, an inspec-
tor said that the day-today management of the embassy was “paralysed by absenteeism and the head of mission’s negative attitude, the denial of any role for diplomatic personnel - and a total absence of internal co-ordination”. Another source said: “He hardly ever came to work, and, when he did, he’d go to Mass from 11am-12 on a working day. He wanted to be ambassador to The Vatican. When Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI, was Pope, he said he was in Opus Dei (the Work of God). But, since Francis took over, he goes to Mass with the Jesuits.” The report said there was a climate of mistrust
and tension, because of the ambassador, allegedly, “exercising his authority through fear, threats and confrontations”. This was reflected, according to the report, in the “unusually high number of staff signed off sick with depression”. Of the embassy’s 20 staff, a chauffeur, a secretary and two diplomats took time off with depression. “The atmosphere is stifling,” said an embassy employee. “Matellanes treats people badly, makes hurtful remarks, changes people’s holiday dates, lacks respect and forces them do work that makes no sense. He treats women as being inferior to men.
In his eyes, they are weaker, and less effective.” The inspector said in his report that the ambassador’s treatment of staff amounted to harassment. He subjected staff to “intense, repeated, methodical and prolonged psychological violence, using his position of power to create a hostile and humiliating environment, which upset the victim’s personal - and working - life”. Spain’s Foreign Ministry has faced criticism for failing to take action against the ambassador earlier, allegedly because of Matellanes’s close friendship with MEP Francisco Millán, the Prime Minister’s brother-in-law.
Canary Government’s tourist-area upgrades
THE Canary Islands Government has announced a boost for four tourist towns on the islands. And over 1.6 million euros will help improve some of the Tenerife tourist areas, said Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe. The money will go towards upgrades on the Ernesto Sarti street and Avenida España, in the Adeje municipality, at a 697,801-euro cost. And the cost of refurbishing the square adjacent to Arona’s Calle Mexico will more than 618,000 euros. Improving the streets
of Nieves Ravelo and Calle Blanco, in Puerto de la Cruz, has a 183,000-euro budget. And the reconditioning of the Calle Flor de Pascua and surrounding areas in Los Gigantes amounts to some 150,000 euros. Bernabe also said work will begin within a month on Valencia Street (Adeje), plus the remodelling of the promenade area of the Varadero, Santiago del Teide, between Punta Negra and La Gaviota, which has a budget of 865,000 euros. And the improve-
ments do not stop there. Landscaping work on the beaches of Las Vistas (Arona), La Pinta and Torviscas (Adeje) will cost a cool 37,000 euros. “It’s important to implement this work,” said Bernabe. “The remodelling of the coast will serve as an example for future interventions in other beaches. “This is primarily to plant palms and other trees to provide shade, and we will also undertake the restoration of the environment as necessary.” All of these works
stemmed from umbrella group “The Regeneration Convention”, which is a co-ordination of actions in tourist areas by the Canaries Government, Tenerife Cabildo, through Tourism of Tenerife, the municipalities of Adeje, Arona, Puerto de la Cruz and Santiago del Teide, together wit hotel employers’ association Ashotel. Since 2007, a total of 237 projects have involved an investment of over 94 million euros, which speaks volumes for the Regeneration group.

Green, green grass of home is bought back TENERIFE Cabildo is ploughing ahead with its commitment to purchase abandoned farms and disused land to increase “the wonder green and lush mountain views on the Island”.
The popular idea to start replanting trees, especially in the South, will not only replace those trees lost to recent forest fires, but will also help boost the Island’s ecological corridor. Environment Minister Jose Antonio Valbuena, in Candelaria to publicise the “Environmental Volunteer Plan”, along with Mayor Mari Brito and local Councillor Joanna Coello, said: “The Cabildo is buying land near what is called the forest crown, which was agricultural, “And we will use it to increase our forest mass, to recover the
green mountains of our great-grandparents.” Valbuena said the last campaign of reforestation was discontinued in 2009 with the arrival of the economic crisis. Now, he added: “It is to time to value our forests. Also, we can help prevent fires from spreading in the border areas of the forest crown by managing those areas abandoned by their owners.” The Cabildo’s plan is to purchase 21,933,651sq/m (2,193.3 hectares) to repopulate the forest crown. And it will also ensure the repopulating of abandoned forests in Arico and Fasnia with Canary Islands pine. On completion of the new forests, Granadilla
and Arico will complete the so-called forest ring. Valbuena said: “Not only is there a lack of forest at the moment, but there are still environmental legal problems, which we want resolved.” He added: “The Environmental Volunteer Plan, drawn up by the Cabildo and the Municipality of Candelaria, is an environmental volunteer programme that includes four main actions to be undertaken throughout the year. “The activities aim to educate the people of Candelaria on the importance of maintaining and conserving natural and heritage resources, and to adopt sustainable attitudes and behaviours.”
Live well, feel healthy ADEJE Council’s Department of Health has organised a series of talks and workshops, for individuals and communities, aimed at improving lifestyle habits for that feel-good factor. These health-inspired events, which are free, are taking place from now until 12th May to celebrate World Health Day today. “It is important from the Council’s point of view that we do all we can in the field of prevention, and information is a basic tool in this,” said Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo. “We are doing all we can to make sure our residents are healthy. And good lifestyle hab-
its are key to minimising risks, or, in the case of an underlying health problem, coping in a better way.” There are workshops on food, and healthy exercise for children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd classes, which will be held in their primary schools. The Council hopes youngsters will realise the importance of eating properly, and how exercise can help them avoid obesity. For secondary school students, there will be sex-education and drugprevention workshops. And for the general public, there are talks on so-called miracle diets, the benefits of physiotherapy after breast
cancer, strengthening self-esteem, dealing with stress and eating disorders, etc. In parallel and in conjunction with the Santa Cruz Celiac Association, Adeje Council has also set up workshops and events for those who suffer from celiac, a disease fuelled by a reaction to gluten. Finally, the Council is also intent upon establishing a Diabetic Centre in the borough which will, with the Tenerife Diabetes Association, offer assessment and help for parents with diabetic children. Information about courses and workshops is available online at www.adeje.es

Food and Environment, and the municipalities of San Cristobal de La Laguna, Tegueste and Tacoronte, of these developments, and the recent tender will help initiate new soundproofing in the coming months. An official report reveals that 2,441 properties have a right to sound-proofing, the lion’s share in La Laguna, along with 113 in Tacoronte and 128 in Tegueste. Some 547 homes have already had work completed, but the project rumbles on ... as the airport noise decreases.
Beware our danger roads
TENERIFE roads are among Spain’s most dangerous of all, says the traffic authority Trafico (DGT), which is installing more speed cameras on the most vulnerable sections.
With just 33 radar systems throughout our Island, it is hardly surprising that we have lowest number of camera speed-fines in Spain. And of them, just six are fixed, and the rest mobile. They are fixed in the TF-5 at the height of Guamasa (La Laguna) and the socalled El Sauzal curve, which is very much the Island’s black spot, characterised by its high accident rate on rainy days.

Conde at it again?
North airport noise abating THERE has been an ongoing noise problem at the North airport but, finally, it seems that something is being done about it. Spanish airports’ authority Aena has this week approved the inclusion of another 130 homes into their soundproofing plan. It has set aside 187,898 euros for the start of work on homes in La Laguna, which has already begun. The airport authority recognised the need for action in 35 homes, and 42 other buildings. Aena has informed representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture,

The others are located on the TF-1, at Granadilla de Abona by the airport, and at Las Caletillas. The two remaining sections of fixed radar control are on the TF-13 in La Laguna. Yet Traffico identified 34 black spots on Tenerife’s roads in 2014 - and promised action! To underline how few speeding fines are dished out in Tenerife, the European Automobile Associates (AEA) data for 2015 reveals that, by autonomous communities, the radars logging most complaints counted were those of Andalusia (685,134), Galicia (410,248) and Madrid (383,490). By contrast, the Canary Islands registered just 40,819 fines - the second-leastactive behind the La Rojo region.
FORMER Spanish banker Mario Conde, already convicted and jailed for fraud and embezzlement, was arrested in Madrid on Monday as part of a huge fraud investigation by police.
They are probing whether he has been up to his old tricks, fraudulently repatriating the equivalent of nearly 13 million euros in money he had hidden offshore. He is believed to have salted it away while presiding over the collapse of one of Spain’s largest banks, Banesto, more than two decades ago. His latest arrest, along with six other people, including two of his children and a son-in-law, was ordered by a judge from Spain’s national court. The judge wants to know whether Conde and relatives set up a network of companies to help channel back to Spain the money said to be stashed away in offshore accounts in Switzerland, Britain and other financial centres before the demise of Banesto. Spain’s central bank ousted Conde and took A HUGE python, estimated to be 26ft long and discovered by workers on a Malaysian building site, could be the longest snake ever caught - and the longest reptile. The reticulated python, so-called because of the distinctive pattern and colour on its scales, is a species found in Asia. It was spotted, curled under a tree, by workers building a new flyover in Paya Terubong, on the holiday island of Penang. They called the Civil Defence Department, which took about 30 minutes to capture the snake.
over Banesto in December 1993 after the lender had accumulated unsustainable losses. Banesto, which had a financial shortfall of 605 billion Spanish pesetas at the time, equivalent to around 3½bn euros, was eventually sold at auction to Banco Santander. Conde was convicted on a series of fraud and embezzlement charges and served two separate prison sentences. His current arrest comes as several banking-related corruption cases are moving through the courts, set off by Spain’s property bubble bursting in 2008. The arrest also coincides with the names of some prominent Spanish residents appearing
among the so-called Panama Papers, a giant leak of documents from a Panama law firm specialising in creating offshore companies for the world’s wealthy. So far, Conde’s name has not cropped up in the Panama documents. Conde’s rapid rise to prominence in the late Eighties, alongside his flamboyant appearance and lifestyle, symbolised Spain’s financial deal-making and economic boom of that era. It was a period of excess, propelled partly by the huge subsidies Spain received after joining the European Union in 1986. Conde, a trained lawyer, eventually used proceeds from the sale of a pharmaceutical com-

pany to buy a stake in Banesto, and then become its president in 1987. He extended his reach as Spain’s most prominent banker by investing Banesto’s funds in other industries, including media. In turn, his fall from grace put the spotlight on the close ties between politicians and businessmen in postFranco Spain. Conde, who defended himself during his trial, accused Spain’s Socialist administration, and the conservative corporate establishment, of engineering his downfall to block his political aspirations. Police also raided Conde’s Madrid home on Monday, as well as the offices of companies linked to his relatives and associates. This latest investigation centres on whether Conde used such firms, including a cosmetics company, to move back to Spain as much as 13m euros, which had been hidden overseas, according to Spain’s public prosecutors. Conde was released from prison in 2005 after serving 11 years of a 20year sentence. His attempted political comeback, as a 2012 candidate in regional elections in his native Galicia, ended in failure.
snake is the longestever captured, before it can be confirmed, officially, as a record breaker. It is being held at the Civil Defence headquarters - in an outside enclosure, hopefully - but will be handed over to the state wildlife department. Official record or not, there could be longer snakes living in the wild. In 1912, a python shot in Indonesia was reported to have been 10m (33ft) long. And in 2009, scientists in Colombia found the fossilised bones of a snake, believed to have reached a length of 12.8m (42ft).

Salute for Salou’s courteous festival THIS year’s notorious Saloufest Easter festivities, which attracted its regular 10,000plus British students, was just about as good as it gets.
Unlike previous years when, to the horror of local officials, dozens of Brits at the Costa Dourada resort of Tarragona, in Catalonia, injured themselves jumping off hotel balconies, or have laid drunken siege to the town’s sports installations. The students, attracted by the sex, booze and partying promised by organisers of the Karibean Springbreak 2016, were wellbehaved in the main, but for a few fines for urinating in public and minor altercations.
Now, though, weary Salou residents are preparing themselves for the arrival of another wave of youngsters, this time some 2,000 French university students. “You’re young, you’re not aged 50 with a kid under each arm,” says the event’s advertising website. But some things have definitely changed. For starters, those running the events have been forced by the town’s council to remove the explicit references made on their webpage to “orgies” during the festivities. Salou’s Town Council is unhappy that again, the area is associated with alcohol and out-ofcontrol partying. But hotel owners see it differently because, they say, the spring breaks bring muchneeded revenue outside
the peak season. Last year, the Council decided to stop supporting the holiday packages after five years, calling on hotels to “cease damaging the good tourism image of the municipality and to stop using the Salou brand”. But the organisers stress: “There are no taboos during Karibean Springbreak,” suggesting that young men wear bibs to deal with the effects of so much naked flesh. “Bikinis as far as the eye can see,” reads the website. In 2013, a drunken student suffered severe injuries after attempting to climb up to his room after losing his key. And in previous years, young women have complained of sexual harassment during the spring-break activities.
Weapons cache could lead to Isis terrorists
POLICE who unearthed a weapons cache and a homemade Islamic State flag in Ceuta - a Spanish enclave in Morocco - are investigating a possible connection to Islamist militants. The cache. comprising four pistols, includ-
ing an air-gun modified to shoot live ammunition, two Scorpion sub-machine guns, ammunition and variety of knives, was found in perfect condition, buried on wasteland. Spanish police have detained 15 people with suspected links to Islamic State militants
so far this year, and 102 people on the same charges last year after police stepped up security measures following the Paris attacks. Ceuta and Melilla, Spain’s other North African enclave, have been a focus of Spanish anti-militant investigations.

Outgoing Obama: My biggest regret BARACK Obama has admitted that America’s failure to prepare for the aftermath of Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi’s downfall was the worst mistake of his presidency.
The US President, appearing on Fox News, was answering a series of questions on the highs and lows of his time in office. But he did say that the Libya intervention, when the US and other countries carried out strikes designed to protect civilians during the 2011 uprising, had been “the right thing to do”. However, when the former Libyan chief was killed, the country was plunged into chaos, with militias taking over and two rival parliaments and gov-
ernments forming. Socalled Islamic State (IS) gained a foothold, and Libya became a major departure point for migrants trying to reach Europe. A UN-backed national unity government arrived in the capital, Tripoli, earlier this month but is still waiting to take charge. But the head of western Libya’s the ruling faction has threatened to prosecute any of his ministers who cooperate with the UN group, contradicting an earlier announcement that ministers would stand down. Obama’s worst mistake, he confessed, was “probably failing to plan for the day after, what I think was the right thing to do, in intervening in Libya”. It is not the first time Obama has expressed regret over Libya. He told the Atlantic magazine
last month that the operation went as well as he had hoped, but said the country was now “a mess”. In that interview, he also criticisedFrance and the UK - in particular saying that British Prime Minister David Cameron became “distracted” after the intervention.
It was a rare rebuke for a close ally and one which BBC correspondents said at the time had angered Downing Street. Obama told Fox that his biggest accomplishment in office was “saving the economy from the great depression”. He said the best day of his presidency was when he passed the healthcare reforms. The worst, he said, was responding to the mass shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school. The President, discussing his legacy in a BBC interview last year, said the biggest frustration of all for him was his failure to pass tighter gun-control laws during his term in office.
Health comes at such a big price
THE Canarian Government’s Ministry of Health has paid out more than 20 million euros through malpractice in the last five years.
But despite this huge figure, just 28% of the cases processed by complainants were successful. A total of 948 cases were dealt with between 2010 to 2015, and the most compensation paid by the MoH was a total of 5,104,322.15 euros in 2012. And last year’s total amounted to 4,279,298.19 euros. However, these figures do not correspond to
cases from this year or even last year, because the compensation claims reveal figures for when the case is settled and not when the action begins. It can take up to six years for all the legal avenues to be exhausted. Canaries’ Minister of Health Jesus Morera said there was “a slightly upward trend in the submitting of claims in recent years”. But he added that there had been no peaks relating to the economic-crisis years. “Every time we do more sophisticated treatments, which are more and more complex, the possibility of bad results does increase,” he admitted.
New fathers reluctant to stay home for baby THE British Government’s policy of allowing couples to share their parental leave to be with their babies, introduced a year ago, appears to have flopped.
Just one in 100 new dads have chosen to use the “Shared Parental Leave” (SPL) scheme to bond with their offspring. It was introduced last April, giving parents the option of spreading almost a year’s worth of leave between the two of them, rather than the traditional method of mum being allocated the bulk of the time off. A couple can split the 50-week allowance whichever way they want, together or apart, and an employer
is obliged accommodate their wishes, within reason. But despite the hope that it would allow women more flexibility and freedom in choosing when and how to return to work after giving birth, new research, published by My Family Care and the Women’s Business Council, shows that 55% of women say they don’t want their leave shared with a partner. According to the report, just 1% of fathers have chosen to opt for Shared Parental Leave, against the traditional two weeks’ Paternity Leave. Some 50% of the men surveyed felt that taking more time off would be seen as a negative move by employers. But the research also indicated that things could be looking up, because 63% of dads
said they would probably make use of SPL if they were to have another child. Ben Black, founder of My Family Care, says that while the take-up so far has been disappointing, the policy’s introduction has been a big step forward in the reshaping of family dynamics. “It is still very early
days for Shared Parental Leave,” he added. “While take-up is low, its introduction was a fantastic step forward with regards to equality in the workplace. “The policy proves that women are no longer expected to be the main childcare provider, while men are no longer expected to be the main bread-win-
ner.” Employers also seem to be anticipating an increase in the popularity of SPL, with 48% believing the system will become accepted as normal over time. But money also remains a significant obstacle to take-up in the scheme: 80% of couples surveyed said a decision to share their
leave would be dependent on their financial situation, and on whether their employer had chosen to offer an enhancement on the basic pay, as stipulated by SPL policy. “More and more, we’re going to hear fantastic stories of fathers, at senior levels, who have taken Shared Parental Leave,” said Mr Black “And once these stories filter through, and the notion of sharing leave in this way becomes ‘normal’, it will be accepted practice and that 1% will gradually increase.” He added: “Of course, all change takes time. And while it hasn’t so far been the cultural change that many were clamouring for, I suspect that, with many companies enhancing paternity leave, momentum will grow.”

Death-threat Belgian held after police hunt A BELGIAN man, who had threatened to kill his former partner, was captured by the Guardia Civil on Sunday in Guia de Isora.
Joel Louis Gilbert Bourlard, 38, Tenerife’s “most-wanted” man, was spotted at around 11am by a police officer. Back-up was called and Bourland was ar-
rested and transferred to the holding facility at Playa San Juan. The Guardia Civil had been searching for him
Tax-dodger renters under the spotlight OWNERS of Spanish apartments who placed rental ads last year, including those on specialised websites such as Airbnb, are being targeted by the Spanish Tax Agency.
Officials are cracking down on tax dodgers and, with their 2015 drive for funds now officially under way, those who use the new, online, tax-filing programme Renta Web, may find the following message on their computer screen: “According to data in the Tax Agency’s power, you have placed property rental ads in various media, including the internet.” It serves as a reminder that any income from such rentals must be declared, in the same way as income from foreign pension schemes or other foreign assets. It is not the first time
the Spanish taxman has sought undeclared income from property rental. But Rufino de la Rosa, the agency’s management director, has not explained how the Tax Agency has obtained rental data. He merely said that popular real-estate websites such as Idealista or Airbnb were not providing the authorities with information. Four years ago, the Tax Agency conducted checks on homes which had been declared as empty, with many showing high-utility consumption. Nearly half of all home rentals in Spain - some 1.3 million properties are not declared to the tax authorities. Of these, the vast majority are rented out to third parties, while 367,059 are provided free, or for low rents to relatives. But fraud is being committed says the Tax Agency, which recalls that in 2008, 55% of rentals went undeclared.
since he fled on 31st March when charged in the Arona court for Gender Violence against his former partner, Ucanca González Arias. Bourland, who was found guilty, took advantage of a “comfort” break, which enabled him to go outside the court. He fled on foot after learning that he would serve nine months in prison. The Belgian had broken a restraining order preventing
him from approaching his ex-partner, successfully removing his tagging device in the Arona area. His escape embarrassed the Guardia Civil, which put together a large task force to find him. Bourland, who had a lengthy criminal record, was upset by the couple’s break-up. And a few days after trying to restart the relationship, he is understood to have locked up his girlfriend, keeping her
tied to a bed. Ucanca Gonzalez eventually escaped, only to be found by her ex and threatened again. This continued with telephone calls and whatsapp messages. After finally alerting police, Ucanca González was present when Bourland was summoned to the court in Icod. Among the charges, he was also accused of stealing 1,000 euros from his former part-
ner, which he spent on drugs and alcohol. While the Belgian was on the run, Ucanca González received 24hour daily protection from a pair of Guardia Civil guards because of the high risk from Bourland, who had issued her with death threats. During court proceedings, it was revealed that Bourland had convictions in Belgium for possession of firearms and committing violent acts.
New rules to flatten the cosmetic-surgery cheats THE General Medical Council, which regulates UK doctors, is updating guidelines for cosmetic procedures to stop rogue practitioners who are simply after their patients’ money.
The new GMC rules, being introduced in June for private clinics and the NHS, underline that patients must not be rushed or cajoled into having surgery. Promotional tactics like two-for-one offers will be banned, and doctors who break the rules could be struck off the medical register. The surgeon or practitioner carrying out the cosmetic procedure, whether a breast implant, face-lift or botox injections, must detail explicitly the risks involved. And they must ensure their patients know who to contact if they experience any complications, say the guidelines. The new rules are a positive response to a 2013 review of the industry by Prof Sir Bruce Keogh, which found few safeguards for patients, particularly for those undergoing non-surgical cosmetic procedures such as dermal fillers. His report to the British Government
concluded: “In fact, a person having a nonsurgical cosmetic intervention has no more protection and redress than someone buying a ballpoint pen or a toothbrush.” The GMC says most doctors who carry out cosmetic procedures do so to a high standard, but adds: “We do sometimes come across poor practice, and it is important that patients are protected from this. and that doctors understand what is expected from them”. The GMC has been working with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, which is
launching its own set of professional standards for cosmetic surgeons. The RCS is also calling on the Government to introduce new legislation at next month’s Queen’s Speech, to ensure surgeons are certified to carry out cosmetic operations. It is hoped that these measures will put an end to botched and unethical procedures. Leeds’ mother Victoria Ashton had breast implants in 2008 which, she later discovered, might be faulty, with a high risk of rupturing in the body. She is now part of a campaign group for the
47,000 UK women similarly affected by the PIP implant scandal. Victoria believes the guidelines should help consumers, but says the public needs to be more aware of the potential risks of surgery. “Think twice,” she said. “Profit before people is, basically, our experience of the cosmetic surgery industry. They are all lovely to you in the process of having your operations. “But as soon as your operation is over and done with, and you are out of the period in which they look after you, they don’t really want to know.”

Bully-boys ‘ganging up’
SPAIN and Argentina are a pair of bullies, say Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands, who have accused them of ignoring their wish to remain British. In a joint statement, the disputed island territories accused the two nations of “ganging up” on the islands after Spain and Argentina said they were “committed to ending the territories’ two colonial situations”. Previously, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, and Argentine counterpart Susana Malcorra, said they were “fully available to restart” talks with Britain, describing Spain’s relations with the UK as “the best, as well as being a NATO ally and
a European Union partner”. In response, the Foreign Secretaries of Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands said in a statement: “It also does not say much for the democratic credentials of two large countries that they should seek to gang up in this way in order to bully two very small territories. And, in the process, completely ignore the right of their people to choose what they want to be. “Referenda held in both Gibraltar and in the Falkland Islands have made those wishes abundantly clear.” In 1982, Britain and Argentina fought a war over the Falkland Islands, in which 649 Argentine soldiers, 255 British solders and thee
islanders were killed. In 2013, the inhabitants of the South Atlantic archipelago decided by 99.8% in favour of retaining their status as a United Kingdom overseas territory. Turn-out from the electorate of 1,649, some of whom queued in wind and rain to cast their ballots, was an overwhelming 92%. In Gibraltar, which lies off the coast of southern Spain, 98.5% Gibraltans voted solely to stay under British sovereignty - the results being received with hostility in Spain. The UK Government is adamant it will never enter into an agreement with Spain on the sovereignty of the island, without the consent of the Gibraltar people.
The Queen is minted again THE Royal Mint has struck a £5 coin to commemorate the Queen’s 90th birthday, on 21st April - and Her Majesty has given her approval!
The special-edition piece, designed by artist and sculptor Christopher Hobbs, will be offered as a free gift to pensioners who turn 90
on the Queen’s birthday. Mr Hobbs said: “My design was inspired by the heraldic rose and the Queen’s love of flowers. The central ‘EIIR’ is surrounded by a classical wreath of celebration. “I have tried to make the roses more natural than heraldic, each one different from the other.” The Royal Mint also struck coins to mark the Queen’s 70th and 80th birthdays, as well those on other signifi-
cant dates during her 64-year reign. Anne Jessopp, the Royal Mint’s director of commemorative coin, said: “The Royal Mint has been making coinage for Britain’s monarchs for over 1,000 years. “We are very proud to be celebrating this important occasion together with the nation, with a coin bearing Christopher Hobbs’ strong, yet feminine, floral coin design.”

Two Doors Down Friday 15 April, BBC2, 22.00 There’s tennis trouble in store for Eric and Colin - and they haven’t a sporting chance against Christine. Beth and Cathy head over to Ian and Jaz’s flat to celebrate the boys moving in together. With their wives away for the evening, Eric and Colin make a night of it watching Andy Murray’s US Open tennis match on TV. However, the international time delay means the men have time to spare, so they set up the swingball to pass the hours. Trouble is, Christine ends up being much more involved than they’d like. Ian and Jaz’s plans for a quiet celebratory drink are dashed by Cathy’s over-exuberant dancing which upsets the boys’ downstairs neighbour, a mother of a newborn baby. An intoxicated and infuriated Cathy takes issue with the neighbours’ polite request to keep the noise down, much to Beth’s horror. The night ends in typically disastrous fashion with lost house keys, concussion and curry stains on the carpet.

The Food Detectives BBC2, 19.30
In a new series for BBC Two, Professor Alice Roberts, chef Tom Kerridge and journalist Sean Fletcher set out to improve the cooking habits, bank balances and health of audiences by dishing up the plain facts about the food we eat. In the first episode of The Food Detectives, Professor Alice Roberts reveals the shocking statistic that three-quarters of consumers could be taking home a food poisoning bug following their visit to the supermarket. Exploring the presence of campylobacter in chicken the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK - Alice looks at methods of prevention for a health food scandal that few of us may even have heard about until now. Tom Kerridge has been a professional chef for over 20 years and in that time he’s learned many tips and tricks to deliver food that consistently tastes great. He’s keen to share these trade secrets so we can all improve our cooking. Each week, he will travel around the country turning kitchen fails into kitchen successes. This week he is in Poole to help a viewer who is calling on his expertise to cook the perfect piece of fish. Offering professional trade secrets that we can all use, Tom shares his secret for cooking perfect pork. With masses of products available at every supermarket, journalist Sean Fletcher pulls apart the ingredients in the different price ranges of own-brand products to find out what we are really paying for – revealing when it’s worth spending money on premium and when we can get away with a money-saving basic. With the help of food scientists he meets along the way, Sean’s first stop is the pasta aisle. Pasta has only one main ingredient - yet premium pasta can be over £1 more for expensive brands over budget brands. With this in mind Sean looks at just what we are paying for.

Tom Jones’s 1950s: The Decade That Made Me BBC2, 21:00
Tom Jones takes us on a trip through the decade of his childhood and adolescence. Television, the movies, the radio and the music of the first rock ‘n’ roll years give us a unique insight into both the country and the decade that would shape Tom’s talent and make him a star. Tom Jones’s 1950s in Pontypridd are told by the man himself as he travels back to his birthplace. Joan Bakewell, Katherine Whitehorn and Michele Hanson share their experiences both as women and from differing class backgrounds, historians Alwyn Turner, Martin Johnes, Francis Beckett and Tony Russell draw the social and political landscape of a rapidly changing decade, while musicians Bruce Welch, Clem Cattini, Marty Wilde and Tom McGuinness talk of how that decade began their musical journeys and changed their lives forever.

Jim Carter: Lonnie Donegan and Me ITV1, 22.20 “I first saw Lonnie Donegan light up the stage when I was 11 years old and ever since then I thought he was the greatest. And I’m going to show you why Lonnie Donegan, who was once the most famous man in Britain, was so exciting, so influential, so loved and then so forgotten.” - Jim Carter, actor and Lonnie Donegan fan Downton Abbey’s Mr Carson may have hung up his butler’s jacket for good, but even as his final scenes were being shot, actor Jim Carter was already at work on a remarkable and long-cherished film about the King of Skiffle, 1950s singer Lonnie Donegan. In Jim Carter: Lonnie Donegan and Me, the actor shares his life-long passion, which began aged 11 when he saw Lonnie play at a seaside variety theatre on a summer holiday, as he tells the story of his profound impact on pop culture and a generation of British musicians who went on to conquer the world. This one-hour film features Jim’s lively encounters with some of those seminal rockers who were inspired to take up music by Lonnie Donegan. Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Roger Daltrey and Sir Van Morrison tell Jim how, initially using tea chests, washboards and even home made guitars, they were inspired by Lonnie Donegan to make the music which would set them on the path to superstardom. Later fans such as Jack White of The White Stripes also reflect on the importance of Lonnie as a figure in the development of popular music. Jim traces Lonnie’s rollercoaster life and career, meeting his fans and family, including his first wife and his widow, as well as his son. He goes on a pilgrimage back to the Regal Theatre in Great Yarmouth where he first saw Lonnie all those years ago. He says: “Oh dear, this is it - it’s been knocked down. Unfortunately it’s now a popular brand of modern coffee [shop]. But this was the site where I saw Lonnie Donegan, 1960, Puttin’ On The Donegan. Hard to believe really, looking at this guy, who looks like a wide boy selling ties on a market, hard to believe he made such incredible music. Music that you’d have thought came out of the Deep South of America, he made and played and as an 11-year-old I heard in Great Yarmouth and I thought, ‘This is amazing.’”
Antiques Roadshow BBC1, 20:00 Fiona and the team are at Hanbury Hall near Droitwich in Worcestershire. It’s thought the creator of The Archers based the fictional village of Ambridge on Hanbury, and so it’s quite possible that Hanbury Hall is the inspiration for Lower Loxley Hall. Mark Hill values a pop art jacket designed by Sir Peter Blake. Sadly its value has been reduced after being eaten in places by a ferret. Rupert Maas appraises one of the finest nude paintings he’s ever seen. Glass specialist Andy McConnell values the oldest piece of glass he’s ever handled in a lifetime of collecting. Meanwhile a sketch of Napoleon on his death bed made hastily on St Helena prompts a debate about the reputation of the man. Marc Allum shows Fiona four vessels that elegantly evoke the spirit of Ancient Greece. But can she spot the one genuine piece that actually dates back two and a half thousand years?

Hidden Britain by Drone Channel 4, 20:00
Presented by Sir Tony Robinson, in this episode the drones fly through a village erased from the maps, a supermarket without any customers, and a platform in the ocean that claims to be an independent nation. The flight starts in Scotland, where just a few miles from the Forth Bridge the largest aircraft carriers ever built for the Royal Navy are under construction. Security in the dockyard is tight, but with each carrier weighing 65,000 tonnes and the flight deck measuring 4.2 acres, it’s hard to keep them under wraps! Then the drones head to Nottinghamshire, to an unmarked building. Inside it looks like a supermarket, but there are no tills, no queues and the public are not allowed in. It’s not on any official list of stores and the only shoppers to be found are professionals working through the night to prepare online shopping orders.

The Code BBC1, 14.15 Matt Allwright is taking a break from holding the nation’s Rogue Traders to account as he takes the helm of BBC One’s newest quiz, The Code. Faced with a locked safe full of cash, contestants must crack the code by answering questions that will open the safe and win them the jackpot. The jackpot starts at £3,000 but each time a contestant fails - which could only take one wrong answer - they are eliminated immediately and the jackpot grows by £500. Contestants also have a choice. Do they try to unlock the safe alone or do they work together? In theory, the more brains, the easier the task - but teaming up also means splitting the jackpot. Along with the contestants, Matt will be joined by newcomer and quiz-expert Lesley-Anne Brewis to offer some all-important extra facts and bits of trivia.

MasterChef BBC1, 19:30
After four weeks of fierce competition only the 14 best cooks remain, and the battle is on as they come together for the first time and cook off against each other across two shows. The amateurs are split into two groups - the red team and the blue team - with seven cooks in each. Each set of contestants faces a daunting cook-off based on a brief given by John and Gregg. Their challenge is to create one dish inspired by a family favourite or food from their childhood. Once both groups have finished cooking, John and Gregg decide who is good enough to continue in the competition. The red team are the first to cook. In one hour and 30 mins, they must deliver just one dish that stands out from the crowd and proves to the judges that they have a future in the competition. However, they won’t find out their fate just yet, as they’ll have to wait until the blue team have cooked before John and Gregg will choose who stays and who goes.

“The last thing I want to do is demonise animals. It’s about making them intriguing and fascinating. It’s about dealing with how predators interact with their prey. It’s about how the animals interact with each other in nature.” Steve Backshall Fierce sees BAFTA Award winning TV naturalist Steve Backshall seeking out the world’s most fierce animals. The series takes Steve on six epic adventures to Guyana, Mexico, Namibia, Indonesia, Australia and South Africa, where along the way he encounters the world’s most venomous snake, the Inland Taipan, gets perilously close to the largest carnivorous reptile in South America, the giant Black Caiman, attempts to track down the endangered Giant River Otter and stakes out the feisty and fearless Honey Badger. As well as going eye-to-eye with American Crocodiles, swimming amongst Bull Sharks and narrowly escaping the jaws of the extraordinary Komodo Dragon, Steve also meets the people living cheek by jowl with these dangerous predators and those who have miraculously survived being attacked by them. In episode one, Steve travels to the wild islands of Indonesia. He has a close call being chased by the world’s largest lizard, the legendary komodo dragon, rescues a three metre venomous king cobra, goes diving in the treacherous seas that surround the islands getting hands on with the world’s most poisonous fish and he has his first ever encounter with an unusual predator, the aptly named flamboyant cuttlefish.

An exclusive glimpse inside the UK’s only private maternity hospital. In the second episode of this series, the Portland Hospital is put under intense pressure from the arrival of a wave of VIPs - including a Middle Eastern princess and a Premier League footballer’s wife - all paying a premium for the ultimate pampered birth. New staff member Phoebe admits her biggest fear is that they will all go into labour at exactly the same time. New midwife Rachel reveals the shock of going from a busy NHS ward delivering babies to doing more mundane jobs like brushing a patient’s hair. And we meet young dad of four Nick, whose humble upbringing means he takes the extreme Portland luxuries with a pinch of salt.

In the early hours of 15th September 2014, two British backpackers, Hannah Witheridge and David Miller, were found dead just yards from their hotel in Koh Tao, Thailand. Murder in Paradise delves into life on the seemingly idyllic island and discovers a darker undercurrent to this popular tourist hotspot. David and Hannah’s murders are just two of a number of British deaths in Thailand, but with authorities anxious to protect the booming tourist industry, the deaths of Westerners often go unexplained. With previously unseen footage inside the police station, and rare interviews with the Burmese migrant workers convicted of the murder, Murder in Paradise takes a closer look at the dangers of the island and asks if Koh Tao is becoming more of a nightmare than a dream destination for Western holidaymakers.

When the body of teenager Will Hudson is found in a Manchester park, Rachel (Suranne Jones) knows his death could have been prevented. With information about the Taking Out The Trash website in the public domain, monitoring potential targets is severely compromised and Mitch’s missing daybook seems the likely source of the leak. When Rachel receives an email with video footage of Will’s murder, it’s clear the rules of the game have changed and Rachel’s safety is in question. Acting as appropriate adult in Taisie’s (Harriet Waters) police interview, Janet (Lesley Sharp) feels powerless to protect her daughter. Rachel tells her that as a police officer, she mustn’t interfere, but Janet is Taisie’s mum first and knows she has to do something to stop the madness. At the end of Syndicate 9’s darkest day, Janet and Rachel share a drink, and it’s clear to Janet that the world is a now a very different shape.

Paul O’Grady’s Animal Orphans
Thur 21st April
ITV1, 21.00
In episode two, Paul returns to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where he meets fiveyear-old Boogie Boy. Two months earlier, Boogie Boy fell out of a tree and broke his arm and is now having physiotherapy. Paul helps distract Boogie while the ranger manipulates his arm. Later, Boogie has to go to the local human clinic for an x-ray to check the fracture has healed. It has, so Paul takes him back to the ropes where the other orangutans are learning to climb. No-one knows whether the fall will have affected his confidence. It becomes clear to Paul that for the orphans, friendship could help to replace the bond they are missing after being separated from their mums. One orangutan, Salamat, lost all his hair after his friend died, and it has just started growing back. After washing Boogie’s hands and feet – to make sure they’re clear of bacteria from the soil – Paul goes on a sunset cruise down the river, with nature photographer Cede Prudente. They discuss the situation affecting the wildlife in Borneo – that large areas of rainforest are being destroyed. Paul also visits the Sun Bear conservation centre. Sun Bears are the second most endangered bear in the world, after the giant panda. They are often sold illegally as pets in Borneo – until they grow too big and dangerous. After seeing Kala, a 10-month-old bear who is being slowly introduced to the rainforest, the founder Wong Siew Tay introduces him to the centre’s newest arrival – four-month-old Tan Tan. She’s very small, but will grow about 300 grams a day. Paul and Wong create a new enclosure for her to experience some of the things she’ll find in the rainforest. She starts to learn how to use her sharp claws, strong bite and very long tongue. Wong also takes Paul to see a four-year-old bear called Fulung, who can’t be released because he’s been too used to human company. He has wounds on his side which he keeps re-opening, apparently to get attention from people. Returning to Lok Kawi Wildlife Rescue Centre, Paul meets a slow loris called Bukan. Slow lorises are often sold illegally as pets, and Bukan wasn’t taken care of properly – he was so stressed he chewed off his own fingers, and Doctor Diana had to amputate his hand. Bukan should be eating insects, but so far he will only eat banana. Paul presents him with some crickets, and although he seems scared of them at first, eventually he eats one.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke
Kofi with cream! OVER the years, Springers Bar has always hosted successful Tenerife Loves Karaoke heats, and last Friday was no exception.
Eddie Marzella, business partner and resident compere at Springers, must be congratulated for the way he promotes this event, year-on-year. The build-up started with his own promotional material placed around the bar, weeks before the official posters are released. Eddie also makes sure that every visitor to the bar, resident or tourist, knows that a heat of Tenerife loves Karaoke is coming to the El Mirador strip. And he wants them competing in his bar! Something tells us that Eddie wants to produce another Grand Final winner
- Springers’ last one was in 2014, when Chloe Guy triumphed. His grand efforts ensured that there were a number of pre-registered singers when TLK host Gordon Slayney arrived, with more signing up after the first announcement. The judging panel included Springers Bar compere Eddie and regular customer Vernon. And they were in for a tough night. At the end the singers were separated by mere fractions. Fourth, fifth and
sixth places could have easily been in the sing-off were it not for just 0.75 of a point. As we have seen from this year’s previous heats, there is no pattern to which contestants will sing - unlike the 2014 competition, in which several songs by Adele were belted out. This week, to name but a few, we heard Neil Diamond’s I Am, I Said; My Boy, by Elvis; Hold Back The River, by James Bay, and a great rap from James, who sang Bruno Mars’ I Don’t Want To Be A
Billionaire”. The final trio chosen for the sing-off were Bekkah, who actually performed an Adele number, “Rolling in the Deep”, and Billy, fast becoming a regular this year, who was determined to reach the final with Mack The Knife. But the winner, by a fair margin, was Kofi. He opened with Wanted Dead or Alive, by Bon Jovi, followed by Billy Joel’s classic, Piano Man, in the final. It was a tough decision, but young Kofi proved to be a popular winner. He will certainly be amongst the favourites come the Final in just a few weeks time. We look forward to the next heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke when, who knows who will pop in to give us a song? One thing is sure, though. These are funfilled occasions, complete with excellent support for the en-
trants, which creates a superb atmosphere in which for them to perform. The grand final takes place on 4th June at Showtime Las Americas where all the heat winners will compete for the 1000 Euro cash prize and the title of Tenerife Loves karaoke 2016 If you would like to compete for this fabulous prize, HURRY, HURRY, HURRY because we are now well over the halfway point. All venues have been announced and places are being filled quickly. So if you are interested in competing at any or all the remaining heats, which are open to everyone over the age of 13, every nationally and to anyone who has entered before, call Oasis Fm on 902 232 102, register at the relevant venues or at Facebook oasisfm Tenerife. Or, if you just want one of the best nights out you will have this
year, just come along and see what all the talk is about. This year’s competition is proudly sponsored by Bombay Babu Authentic Indian Tandoori Restaurants, offering three perfect places for you to enjoy the best Indian food in Tenerife: Torviscas Playa, Callao Salvaje and their latest restaurant, in La Tatejita’s new commercial centre, on the road to El Medano from Los Abrigos. The height of delight!
By Vanessa Vee HAVE you ever taken a step back, given yourself minute and absorbed just what a breathtaking Island we live on? We don’t even have to venture far to experience some wonderful views.
And the one which always proves highly spectacular has to be Mount Teide, our very own volcano! She stands majestically, in the centre of the Island, and is the highest mountain in Spain. And, at a towering 3,718 metres high, it is also the world’s largest volcano. It is absolutely “compulsory” to visit the National Park of Las Canadas, because it helps you get away from the idea that Tenerife is just beach and sun. You definitely won’t regret it. The views are simply stunning, and, on a clear day, you can see
the other six Canary Islands from the peak. If it happens to be cloudy, then witness the splendid sea of clouds that form around the volcano. Weather conditions on the volcano are “extreme”! In winter, it is quite normal to snow, so wrap up warm. Conversely, you need to take precautions with the sun during summer months! A brief look at the history shows that the
Guanches, who inhabited the Canary Islands originally, were the first to use the lands of Las Canadas del Teide to feed their sheep and goats. The National Park, which received its title in 1954, is the oldest of the four national parks located in the Canary Islands. The others are Garajonay, in La Gomera; Roque de los Muchachos, in La Palma, and Lanzarote’s Timanfaya.
Also, in June 2007, Mount Teide National Park was declared a World Heritage Site. The incredible scenery, at 2,000m above sea level, captures the imagination, thanks to centuries of eruptions which have generated a wealth of landscapes. Because of this unique beauty, it is not surprising that film directors have used this location for their movies, including One Million Years BC, Clash of the Titans,
Planet of the Apes and, more recently, Star Wars, as well as many television commercials. The Roques de Garcia are also pretty interesting, and I enjoy taking a guided tour when visiting Teide, purely because the certified guides hold an array of fascinating information and facts. Mount Teide and the National Park receive over three million visitors annually, and there is a huge array of
options for visiting El Teide. You can take the car, join a guided tour for a full or half-day, or maybe hike to the summit, guided or unguided. But you must have a permit to do this - and I recommend you have a fine level of fitness! A wonderful evening excursion is Teide by Night, when you can participate in some star-gazing. Alternatively, you may wish to spend a night at the base of Teide in the Parador Hotel, which will provide you with a telescope. You can even take a downward bicycle tour from the top, or book a helicopter and view the crater from above … the list goes on. Tenerife Sunshine Travel offer excursions, hotels and car hire to Mount Teide, starting from as little as 25 euros per person. For more information and reservations, please call 922 751 867, email info@tenerifesunshine. com or book online at www.tenerifesunshine. com Otherwise, call into either of our offices, located in Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos, or opposite the hotel Jardin Tropical in San Eugenio.
Driving-licence fines By Emma at Motorworld
I AM often asked by motorists whether they’d be fined if they didn’t exchange their licence when driving in Spain.
There are at least two answers to this, dependent on your circumstances and nationality, or which driving licence you hold: European or Non-European. The DGT has straightforward rules, although many people chose to ignore them. Firstly, can you be fined if you hold a current UK valid licence?
The answer is Yes if you are resident, you hold a Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano (commonly known as the green NIE) and your licence complies with one of these two circumstances: *Holder of a European driving licence with an indefinite duration, such as people from Belgium or Germany, or where the length of the licence at first issue is more than 15 years (or five years in the case of a group 2 licence). This applies to UK licences because they don’t expire until the holder is 70. And even though the photo is renewed every 10 years, the licence itself doesn’t actually expire. It also applies to those who have legal residency in Spain or the Canary Is-
lands and whose licence was acquired on or before the 19th January 2013. In those cases, your licence should have been renewed your licence from 19th January 2015 *Holder of a European driving licence with an indefinite duration, as above, or greater than 15 years, again as above but who has legal residence in Spain or the Canary Islands, and obtained itafter 19th January 2013. In this case you must your driving licence as soon as you have been resident for two years. For example, for a person who obtained a green Residencia on 12th September 2014, the licence must be renewed/ exchanged on the corresponding date this year.
*If you are a holidaymaker - here for two weeks, one month, six weeks, even a year - the answer is No. However, holding a valid European licence does not mean you cannot be fined. This is mainly applicable to the people known as Swallows, who have until now had the best of both worlds in that they are fiscally resident in the UK, but have also applied for Residencia here to reap what little discount benefits they provide. If I am a European Citizen, surely I cannot get a fine for not renewing my licence, can I? Again, the law is a little complex. According to the Reglamento de Conductores, there are two types of fines for Residents who are caught
driving with a “Non-valid Driving Licence”. When a driver lives in Spain and there is no agreement between their country and Spain to change the licence, you must get a new one in Spain, which would involve carrying out an exam again because, once you have Residencia, your licence is not valid in Spain. This is exactly what happens with Non-Europeans such as Russians, Canadians and those from Senegal, for example. The DGT site has a full list of all countries with agreements for anyone to check if unsure. Fines will, therefore, vary. In the case of, say, a Russian driver, with whom there is no agreement, he/she could be fined 500 euros for not
adhering to Spanish law. For those countries who do have agreements, you can still be fined. But the penalty would then be 200 euros. European drivers, and for the purpose of this article we are referring to UK citizens, must renew their licences as there IS an agreement between Spain and the UK, much like the Income Tax double-taxation agreements. If they fail to do so, the fine is 200 euros. If you are a European and hold a European valid licence and receive a 500-euro fine, you may appeal this and ask for a reduction to 200 euros. This must be done in writing, with any relevant documentation to support your claim for a reduction.

Meson Era Las Mozas restaurant
The T-bone steak was bigger than the plate! IF you want to sample typical Canarian cuisine, or even a huge rack of ribs, you must visit the exquisite Meson Era Las Mozas restaurant in Valle San Lorenzo.
It is known affectionately as The Courtyard by the British community. although some stick to The Ribs. But whatever the label, the food is spectacular. The spacious premises do, indeed, feature a courtyard with a tree in the middle, as well as a beautiful restaurant inside. This is a veritable oasis tucked away down a tiny side street of Valle San Lorenzo behind the catholic church. If you’re coming from the Los Cristianos direction, turn right just past Dorta, the kitchen company, and follow your nose until you come across it, on the right, complete with car park. Las Mozas has been
there for 13 years, so if you’ve lived here for a while, you will surely have been there at least once. If not, you don’t realise what you’re missing! Some friends, happy to sit at home most nights, venture out for a meal two or three times a year. And guess where they go? Always! And always ribs! And no wonder! It was a lovely evening so we chose to sit outside in the covered courtyard area (where they allow smoking), complete with real hanging plants and a whole host of long trestle-like tables, ideal for large groups. On colder evenings, less-hardy folk slip inside to the cosy restaurant. With a bottle of Dorada and glass of Canarian red wine in hand, we perused the multilingual menu, which is definitely a meat-lover’s delight. To be fair, if you’re vegetarian, it’s not the place for you, although they will cater for you if necessary
Hot bread, “Mojo” sauce, both green and spicy red, together with the not-to-bemissed home-made Ali Oli (garlic mayonnaise) were brought to the table. To begin, we shared a reasonably-priced dish of garlic prawns, which were fresh and simply delectable, accompanied by a huge mixed salad. Las Mozas is famed for its ribs, but we felt like breaking with tradition. So for the main event I chose beefsteak; two large pieces of thin steak graced my plate. In fact, so big were they that there was no room to add the salad, or the melt-in-your-mouth Canarian Potatoes. The meat was succulent and tasty, which tells you exactly why people return time after time. My work colleague chose the T-bone steak, which was bigger than the plate itself. But he made good progress tucking into it until the sheer size defeated him. In fact, we simply
had no room left for dessert but enjoyed two cups of their tasty coffee instead. All in all we had a superb evening. It is spotlessly clean, you get attentive, excellent service and the main reason you go there is for the food, which was spoton.
To reserve a table, call 922 765 597, the restaurant now opens for lunch and goes straight through to the evening for dinner. It’s not that long since they closed for a siesta and reopened in the evening, which suggests that business, as it should be
there, is booming! Las Mozas is open six days a week and is closed on Mondays. Also, there is ample carparking at the side of the restaurant. For more information check out their website www.eralasmozas.com - or find them on Facebook.

Veggie group might not look that healthy...
THE ANSWER IS ‘SIMPLE’ By Carl Pattison WHEN feeling the vibe of what’s going on in my salon, I look at what clients are asking for, and what I feel they are leaning towards. This includes colours and cuts - because you can’t have one without the other. And our new range of colours have advanced so much, giving us vibrant-to-natural, and all that are in-between. More and more clients are asking for a naturallooking colour, which doesn’t look obvious that it has been applied. There is less warmth to the shades, and cooler
tones are in fashion - and demand. Cuts are simple, but that doesn’t mean they are simple for us to do. Your hair should fall, naturally, into place, rather than having to be forced. Many of our clients opt for simple, easy-tomaintain shapes, which don’t look over-styled. After all, there’s no point looking good as you
leave the salon, but not being able to recreate it at home. Your hair should look good between salon visits. It shouldn’t look disastrous by the time you go back for your next appointment. Hair should still keep its shape, weeks after it has been cut, and you should be receiving compliments all the time. Styling hair should be 80% the cut, and just 20% the blow-dry. If it’s overdone, there’s no way you’re going to replicate this at home. Hair should be easy to do. If not, ask yourself why, and what your stylist can do to make things a lot simpler. Then you can look great, from when you leave the salon, to when you return.
HELLO SAILOR… By Carl Pattison FASHION styles rarely cross over the genders, but, this year, one theme has done that: Nautical. Colours have gone red, white and blue. And, in the fashion stores, stripes and anchors are emblazoned over many hot items. Thankfully, this trend has continued last season’s winter fashion of “dressing up”. Smarter, chic clothing has sprung into vogue, and looking your best has never been so much at the forefront of fashion. Carrying off this look is easy. Pick a one-coloured piece - say your shorts - and add to it your nautical stripes, or take it into reverse. But never clash two of these items together. Right down to your
deck (or loafer) shoes, match in your colour scheme with what’s gracing your feet. Guys, you have no excuses to miss out on this hot look, as there are also pieces in the stores for you. Girls, you can take this trend right up to the accessories, tying in your jewellery, which includes twisted-rope necklaces and anchorthemed earrings, to add that touch of glamour. Thick, linked chains on bags and shoes also work well with this
“at-sea” look. Finish off your outfit with a fitted, box-shoulder jacket, if you’re going somewhere that requires more of a dressed look. Just make sure it’s longer, and quite masculine-shaped. This summer, it’s all looking ship-shape on the fashion front.
By Val Sainsbury MOST of us have met someone who is a vegetarian. They are a varied group, as are those who eat meat. Some are overweight, some less so.
Some are a picture of health, while others look as though they could do with a good meal! And scientists in the US discovered that those populations who have had a primarily vegetarian diet for generations, were found to be far more likely to carry mutations in their DNA. This makes them susceptible to inflammation, which can raise the risk of heart disease and cancer. It is believed that the mutation occurred to make it easier for vegetarians to absorb essential fatty acids from plants. The disadvantage is that it leads to an increase in the production of arachidonic acid - an unsaturated, essential fatty acid - which is linked to inflammatory disease and cancer. When coupled with a diet high in vegetable oils - such as sunflower oil - the mutated gene quickly turns fatty acids into dangerous, arachidonic acid. This discovery could help explain previous research, which found that vegetarian populations were nearly 40% more likely to suffer
colorectal cancer than meat-eaters, which has puzzled doctors because eating red meat is thought to raise the risk. Researchers from America’s Cornell University compared hundreds of genomes (an organism’s complete set of DNA) from a primarily-vegetarian population in Pune, India, with traditional meat-eating people in Kansas. They discovered a significant, genetic difference. “Those whose ancestry derives from vegetarians are more likely to carry genetics that metabolise plant fatty acids more rapidly.” said Tom Brenna, Professor of Human Nutrition at Cornell. “In such individuals, vegetable oils will be converted to the more pro-inflammatory arachidonic acid, increasing the risk for chronic inflammation, which is implicated in the development of heart disease, and exacerbation of cancer. “The mutation appeared in the human genome long ago, and has been passed down through the human family.”
To make the problem worse, the mutation also hinders the production of beneficial Omega 3 fatty acid, which is protective against heart disease. It might not have mattered when the mutation first developed, but, since the industrial revolution, there has been a major shift in diets away from Omega 3 fats (found in fish and nuts), to less-healthy Omega 6 fats, which are present in vegetable oils. “Changes in the dietary Omega 6 to Omega 3 balance may contribute to the increase in chronic disease seen in some developing countries,” said Prof Brenna. “The message for vegetarians is simple: use vegetable oils that are low in omega-6 linoleic acid, such as olive oil.” Previous studies have shown that vegetarianism and veganism can lead to problems with fertility, by lowering sperm counts. Separate research from Harvard University also found that a diet high in fruit and vegetables may impact fertility, because men are consuming high quantities of pesticides. Many vegetarians also struggle to get enough iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and calcium, which are essential for health. One study found that vegetarians had approximately 5% lower bone-mineral density (BMD) than non-vegetarians. Yet other research suggests that vegetarianism lowers the risk of diabetes, stroke and obesity. This new research was published in the Molecular Biology and Evolution journal.

Cats Welfare
Simply rubbish behaviour! A MEMBER of the public was distressed to come across a box of five, two-week-old kittens in a basura this week. He removed them, contacted us and we have taken them into foster care. This is not an isolated incident because this happens a number of times a year - and not just with kittens, but with puppies, too. Sometimes, the animals are found, but it is distressing to think that sometimes they are not,
and will either die in the basura, or certainly in the collection lorry that empties it. We really want to get the word out that this shouldn’t be an option for people to consider, especially when they have kittens they cannot look after. Please, if you - or anyone you know - has kittens (or a cat) that need a home, then contact us to discuss how we might be able to help. The younger the kit-
tens, the more likely we will be able to home them. Please don’t wait until they are aged 10, 11, 12 or more weeks old. We can also discuss the spaying of the mother, so that the same thing doesn’t happen in six months’ time, when she comes into heat again.
Beautiful Boris Boris is a beautiful ginger-tom who was found in Vilaflor. He was dragging his leg behind him, and was very frightened, hungry and thirsty. He was caught, and we arranged for him to be treated at Don Perro vets in Las Chafiras. But his break was very complicated, so a vet from the North came to assist with the operation. Happily, Boris has made a full recovery and is the friendliest, most affectionate cat you will
ever meet. He will make a fabulous companion for someone. He is castrated, vaccinated and is leukaemia-negative, so what are you waiting for? As always, cats go on a two-week trial, so you can be sure they are the pet for you, before you make a commitment. The borough will join in the global celebrations marking the 400th anniversary of the deaths of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. For the first time, a number of English-language authors have been invited to take part in the
fair, and they will be signing copies of their books during the final two days of the event. They are Joe Cawley, Nikki & Richard Attree, John Reid, Margaret Tully, Lee Bullen and Susan Dehmel. The Book Fair also provides a platform for those companies who promote and sell books, and for locally-based authors who wish to reach a new public. The full range of activities starts tonight (Friday) with an art exhibition opening in the Adeje Cultural Centre, with
works from various national and international artists. There is also a poetry evening tonight at the Socio-Cultural Centre in La Postura, organised by the local residents association. The fair will be held in the car park beside the Adeje School of Music and Dance next Friday (22nd April) and Saturday (23rd). And, apart from the stalls, book-launches and book signings, there will also be story-telling, puppet shows, and performances.
programme, please call or Whatsapp Theresa on 680 475 500 (9am-6pm, 7 days a week), or message us on our website www. cats-welfare -tenerife. com/contacts Foster carers We desperately need more foster carers for kittens and adult cats on a short-term basis, while we find them homes. It doesn’t matter if you live here for just a few weeks, or months - a year even. We provide everything you need, including food, special milk, bedding and litter. We also provide all veterinary care, support and advice. If you would like to find out more, or speak to one of our existing foster carers, message Theresa for a no-obligation chat. Your donations Do you have anything to donate to help us raise funds? Items can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind HiperDino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm (Saturdays 11am-4pm). If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items to offer us - such as furniture and household effects - please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.
Accion del Sol news
Two of the best
TWO of our avid supporters, Lana Bellamy and Jean Warren, rolled up their sleeves and spent the afternoon bottle feeding a pair of month-old puppies which had been dumped. They were brought to the refuge, by Protection Civil and they all had a super time. The “older generation” especially, enjoy the animals. and, physically - and mentally - it is a great stimulation for them. Both Lana and Jean have adopted dogs from the refuge, which ensures that they are never alone. This provides great comfort to them, as well as being a great tonic for the dogs. Our Spring-clean Next Saturday (23rd April) at 1pm is our
Spring-Clean Event, where we are asking friends of the refuge to help us bath the 200 dogs here. Everyone will be given a dog to bath, brush and walk, if they want to. The dogs love the attention, and it is a welcome break from their lives in the kennels. If you can spare the
time, please join us and make a dog very happy. Grateful thanks We are so thankful for all the support we receive from our many volunteers and supporters, of all nationalities. You help us in so many ways … adoptions, dogwalking, plus donations of bedding, sheets and
towels. You also help ease the pain and suffering of some of the many strays, who may have endured years of physical, and mental, abuse. Please call us on 922 778 630 if you can help in any way, or visit the refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays (1-4pm). We are here We are situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the north-bound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. Email the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier. org, or visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del SOL, for further details.

Lee’s bid is all behind
THE annual endof-season singles tournament is always contested fiercely, and there is always a plethora of shocks. That didn’t change last Tuesday, as six venues hosted the first round of matches.
The flagship table was at Gaffers, in what was a tough-looking contest. With just one player making it through to finals’ night, there was no margin for error. Wayne has had a fine first season in the Direct Telecom Pool League, and the Palms B star was a strong favourite. However, he never got going and was biffed by Dreamers’ Gavin. Lee then got the better of stablemate Kev, before running into an inspired Harry in the semi-final. Lee Jackson and his builder’s bum (see picture) safely made the final after accounting for Gavin. And what a cracker it was! Both players were potting well and, at 2-2, it went
to a decider. Lee had his chances but Harry would not be denied. At the Crown, in Valle San Lorenzo, there was a nice mix of Division One and Division Two players. Terrace Bantam’s Mal was the first player on his way home after running into Graeme, of Palms B. Joel and Greg, from Crown B, were also soon on their way while Troy, from Gaffers B, never got going against former singles runner-
up Roscoe from Palms A. He then edged out Graeme for a place in the final, where he met Mick, who had beaten fellow-Bluebell George. Mick was soon staring down the barrel as Roscoe took the first two frames, with just a red and a black to pot in the third frame. However, Mick stayed calm to win frames three and four, only to fall just short of a big comeback by losing
frame five. The Bluebell, in Los Cristianos, was dominated by Hammers A captain Paul. He didn´t drop a frame all night as he booked his place in the last eight. First up was Mucker who, despite home-table advantage, couldn’t match the Hammer. Rewind’s John had beaten Fat Nick, from TPT, in the first round, but he couldn’t land a paw on Paul, who breezed into a final showdown with teammate Friztel. He had overcome Wilf and Mal, both in three frames, to get to the final. But again, Paul just went through the gears. Another Tenerife Hammer to make the finals’ night was Wez. He triumphed at Rewind, but had to pull out all the stops. He was too strong for Top Six Dave in the first round, and then whitewashed Lee in the semi-final. Meanwhile, Wez´s team-mate Craig needed a third frame to get past Colin in the first round. But he then found his groove to topple Palms A’s Pete. The final was a thrill-
er. There was nothing between the two and maybe Wez’s extra experience proved to be the difference as he came home 3-2. The Phoenix Bar heat was weakened by a couple of late withdrawals, which didn´t worry Jay at all. The Treehouse potter is a steady stick and he needed a third frame to beat Ben. Meanwhile, Pete beat Paul and then edged out Alan from Bluebell to book his showdown with Jay. Maybe the extra match took its toll on Pete because Jay had a bit too much for the home player. The final venue was in Chayofa, where the Treehouse often hosts some thrilling pool nights, and this one was no different. It looked a wide-open heat, but a couple of home-table players were quietly confident. That confidence lasted about 10 minutes as Scott was the first player eliminated. Richie took his scalp and then Geoff, from Phoenix, ground out a win over Marky P, from Terrace Bar. Steve, from Dream-
ers A, has had a fine season and he put down a marker as he breezed past Gaffers’ Wilson. This was followed by another Treehouse player getting the chop, Mark tasting defeat against Ian, who was good value for the 2-0 scoreline. The Bluebell battler would prove to be a dark horse as booked his final place with a win over Geoff. Steve then got past Richie to make it an all-Los Cristianos affair, which went down to the wire. It has to be said that Ian had rotten luck. He went in-off six times in the final - and you just can´t get away with that! Steve lapped up the gifts to take the last place at finals night. So the last eight has a really strong look to it, with all the players having played against the Scotland lads. Division One champion Neil will be favourite, but it’s a tough one to call. Scotlands player of the tournament, The Ripper, will be busting a gut to win this before he returns to the UK next month.
Oasis Fm Fantasy League
Handy Andy does the trick ANOTHER weekend has passed, and another game has been ticked off the remaining fixtures as we head towards the climax of the Premier League.
This means there are only a few more weeks for our Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League managers to improve on their current positions. With the exception of goalkeepers, it ap-
pears that all the players making the pointscoring team of the week were goal-scorers - from defenders to forwards. Crystal Palace, Spurs and Liverpool led the way, with two players from each team making the grade. The rest came from Bournemouth, Watford, Swansea, Leicester and West Ham. And, of course, it was Andy Carroll as the highest scorer (16) after his 10-minute hattrick against Arsenal. It was pretty much as you were at the top of
the League as the top four stayed the same. But Elodie Townsend, moving steadily through the league, has now made it into the top five. I feel top spot might be a step too far for her, but with just a 47-point gap to second spot, her team’s climb could be even higher. Team of the week went to C.D. Tenerife. No, not that CD Tenerife but the fantasy side, who returned 85 points. Manager Henry Arnold has four players to thank for help-
ing him to that total, with Alderweireld (15), Sigurdsson (11), Vardy (13) and Pellè (24) amassing 63 of those points. The bottom half of the table makes interesting reading, regarding well-known football fans who aren’t doing as well as their clubs. Tony Smith (West Ham, 51st), Adi Benson (Liverpool, 53rd), Kev Heggs (Leicester, 83rd), John Zammit (Chelsea, 85th) and Wez Harper (West Ham, 86th) will all get an end-of-season re-
port saying: Must try ing up as teams with harder! Keep an eye games in hand catch out for some double up, with extra points to league fixtures com- be had. Fantasy Football League

Nano’s a real topper Alaves 2 CD Tenerife 2
By Roscoe RULE The World won the Grand National last weekend after a perfect ride from 19-year-old David Mullins. After a slow start, Mullins had the horse towards the back out of trouble early on.
At the half-way point he was nudged a little closer, only to suffer a stumble which nearly ended his chances. Then, with a quarter of the race to go, the horse started to find its rhythm. Breezing
past tired opposition, it jumped the last still with work to do. But it found the extra gear and got home in the dying strides. And in so many ways, it’s the same with Tenerife. The spirited draw at top-of-the-table Alaves made it eight unbeaten, and you have to go back to St Valentines Day for the last defeat. Okay, the run of cleansheets has ended and, at times, Alaves looked to have another gear. But Tenerife never gave up. Right now, this team have so much going for them. You can see the confidence running through the side, and with the young pups having the time of their lives, they are going to take a lot of stopping. New wonderkid Nano
opened the scoring after a dozen minutes, and this shocked the hosts. There has been a bit of bad blood between these sides recently, going back to the Third Division championship matches. Alaves were a yard quicker and a few pounds stronger in the tackle as they clawed their way back into the contest. Grizzled old veteran Juli got the leveller midway through the half as the hosts pushed forward. After the restart, Alberto came on for injured centre-back Carlos Ruiz and, just two minutes later, Alaves had the lead through an unlikely source. Sergio Mora is a rough-house, ball-winning midfielder. His goal was only his third in two
years. And for a long time, it looked like being enough. Tenerife huffed, puffed and chased, but never really looked like getting their rewards. But with four minutes to go, up popped Nano again to fire in his 10th goal of the season. Position
The vital point means Tenerife are now just a win off the play-offs, even though there is a long jam ahead of them. This Sunday they host Albacete, who are battling for their lives. On paper it´s a gimme, but beware the wounded animal. They showed
real character to stun Cordoba with two late goals last week in a thrilling 3-2 win. They have been in this sort of position before and know how to grind out a result. Patience could be the key word at the Heliodoro this weekend.

in the league, and their big strike runners were likely to cause them plenty of problems. But Nandu answered the threat with a scintillating display of attacking rugby. Their initial score came from full-back Francisco Ferry era, and
the opening half saw Nana’s finest try. A perfect line-out offering provided scrumhalf Mateo Paoli with a quick ball to launch Gregorian Proprietor, Axel Moran and Facundo Tourists into the midfield with a bewildering display of pass-

ing to put Gabriel Trujillo through. And again, the Nandu scrum was dominant, stealing possession regularly to stifle Fuerteventura’s attacking options. After a stuttering display against The Boatmen the previous week the back-line, under
pressure to perform, obliged with a coolheaded display. Every player deserved praise, but special mentions must go to Jacob Oakenfold, who scored 29 points and Gabriel Mendez, with a total of 21. This put the players on par with Patsouris and
Tomi Jacob, who have all scored more than 20 points in a single game. In all, the tries came from Oakenfold (3), Gabriel Mendez (3), Ryan Cox (2), Mel Tena, Francisco Ferreyra and David Tevosya. Conversions were kicked by Oakenfold (7), Trujilio (3).

Premier League preview
Leicester’s big spur By Adi Benson Norwich v Sunderland The relegation battle rages on and a win for Norwich would see them move seven points clear of their opponents - and a big step towards safety. They were disappointed last weekend not to get at least a point against Palace, but being at home should give them a good confidence boost. Sunderland are up against it, despite losing just three of their last 10 games. But six draws in that run have cost them valuable points … and Big Sam knows what it’s like to be in a relegation battle. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Draw Last season: N/A Everton v Southampton Everton are without a win in four now, and they’re showing no signs of getting out of the bottom half of the table. Throw into the mix those players being punished for negative comments about the side, and it hasn’t been a great season for them. The gossip is also growing that Roberto Martinez will not be there next season. The Saints have had a real up-and-down season but they are now seventh, a position they could still better. But but they need the clubs above them to drop points. They have one of the best defences in the league but have had trouble scoring goals. But last week they welcomed back Jay

Rodriguez from longterm injury, which was a boost. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Away win Last season: 1-0 Man Utd v Aston Villa United were back to frustrating their fans again last weekend with another lack-lustre performance which ended with a10- minute defensive collapse against Spurs. They have now lost ground on fourth spot, but this should reap three points, or will Van Gaal embarrass them again? Villa lived to fight another day, with Norwich losing last week, but this, surely, is the weekend their relegation is confirmed. It would take a miracle of biblical proportions to keep them in the Premier League, and we all know that isn’t going to happen. The real disappointment, for fans especially, has been their lack of fight. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Home win Last season: 3-1
Newcastle v Swansea After another defeat last weekend, games are running out for Newcastle in their quest to stay in the Premier League. They are all must-win games now and they need to start here. They must also get the home fans behind them and, if they can make a fast start and grab an early goal, they should get a desperatelyneeded win. Swansea will be flying high after defeating Chelsea last weekend because those three points took them to the magical 40-point mark, which guarantees another top-flight season. This is going to be a tough game, but if they show the same commitment as last week, another win is achievable. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Draw Last season: 2-3 West Brom v Watford West Brom look like falling short of finishing in the top half of the table but, with a real topsyturvy season more or less behind them, they have done well to stay away from the bottom three. A squad overhaul seems required this summer, and up front will need the most attention. Watford had a midseason purple patch, which saved them from a relegation battle. The goals have dried up in recent weeks for their front two, and they haven’t won in six games. They are safe, though,
The 20 year wait for an English winner of The Masters is over after Danny Willett’s thrilling victory on Sunday.
The Sheffield-born golfer played magnificently to win the Green Jacket, but only a few years ago he was tearing up the golf courses in Tenerife. Danny was a guest of Amarilla Golf club and he spent an enjoyable couple of rounds with some of the patrons. Well done Danny, we hope to see you again soon! Photos: Sir Old Golfer
and that is the important thing. They can now regroup and, hopefully, come back stronger next season. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Draw Last season: N/A Chelsea v Man City Chelsea’s recent run of good form came to an end last week after defeat at Swansea, so they will be looking to get back to winning ways. They were still hanging on to a slim chance of sneaking a Europa League place. But that looks beyond them now, so it will be interesting to see how their transfer plans pan out. City come into this game full of confidence after beating PSG and reaching their first Champions League semi-final. Their league challenge is over, but they want to finish as high as possible and will be hoping to leapfrog Arsenal into third spot. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Away win Last season: 1-1 Leicester v West Ham As the games get ticked off, it is looking more and more likely that Leicester will win the league. But this will be a big test for them and could see them drop points for the first time in five games. But if they come through this with another, the Foxes will have one hand placed firmly on the trophy. West Ham put in a great performance against
Arsenal, coming from two down to snatch a point, thanks to Andy Carroll’s hat-trick, which was a huge bonus. He could be key again here because he bullies defenders, but Wes Morgan and Robert Huth are no walk-overs, as they have proved time and again. Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Draw Last season: 2-1 Bournemouth v Liverpool Bournemouth would have settled for a fourth-from-bottom finish at the start of the season, especially after a few long-term injuries to key players early on. But they have overcome adversary, and a midseason slump, to move up the table to 11th. Eddie Howe has certainly earned his stripes as a Premier League manager. Liverpool still haven’t put together a decent run under Klopp, but he can’t be judged on his first eight months in charge. This is a game they are expected to win, but it depends on which side turn up - the solid, defensive side or the calamitous backfour, who can’t defend set-pieces. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Away win Last season: N/A Arsenal v Crystal Palace Arsenal have a game in hand over Spurs and Leicester. But even if they win that, they are still too far off the pace to be in the title
race. They needed a win against West Ham last weekend but threw away a two-goal lead, which has highlighted weaknesses within the team. Palace finally got back to winning ways last weekend after a run of 10 games without one, which left them looking over their shoulders as they slipped down the table. They have pace in their side and, if they can get those players on the ball, they could cause real problems for the Arsenal defence. Zaha is one of those players, and he needs to step up to the plate. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Draw Last season: 2-1 Stoke v Spurs Stoke will be looking to pick themselves up after a heavy defeat against Liverpool, and what better way to do it than by winning to blow open the title race. Mark Hughes added some good players to the ranks this season and, with a few tweaks, they could challenge for Europe next season. Spurs, who must keep winning to maintain pressure on Leicester, go into this game knowing whether their rivals have dropped points. I’m not sure that helps, though, because for me, they’d be better off staying in the dark and going about their game plan. Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Away win Last season: 3-0
