It’s a ‘miracle’ no more people died Continued from Front The criminal investigation started almost immediately, and the final death toll stood at seven, a number described by many as “a miracle”.

Even Arona Tourism Minister David Perez said: “If the collapse had been one or two hours earlier, it would have been much, much higher.”

Rescue workers toiled day and night, heroically, to secure the building initially, then searched for any survivors before the grizzly business of locating the dead.

It wasn’t until yesterday (Thursday) that all the names of those who perished were confirmed.

And even then, they were not released to the public because some of the next-of-kin had not been identified.

The Institute of Forensic Medicine did confirm that three people had been identified through DNA testing: an Italian woman, who was 77, a 41-year-old man, also from Italy, and a Finnish man of 72.

They perished, along with Mariflor Gonzalez Gonzalez, 71, from Avilés, Antonio Jesus Garcia Beltran, a 55-year-old resident of Los Cristianos, a 29-yearold woman from Los Cristianos and a 41-yearold woman, of Moroccan nationality.

Repatriations will take a few more days. The process of documentation and legal requirements are taking some time. The Department of Social Services have

confirmed that the two Italian families have opted for cremation, and to take the ashes to their country, while the family of the Moroccan woman want to transfer the body there as soon as possible.

As for the Finnish family, they returned home on Tuesday, and the Embassy will take care of moving the body to Finland tomorrow (Saturday).

The clear-up operation has mostly finished. The debris is being stored on council land, near the Hyper Trebol supermarket, on the entrance to Los Cristianos.

Yesterday (Thursday), some of the 43 evacuees from the four buildings adjacent to where the collapse occurred, were allowed to return to their homes.

These buildings have all been secured, and general repair work will start in the next few days. However, for the dozen families who have been left homeless, the search for a new home is underway.

In the hours after the collapse, the community rallied to provide assistance. Local restaurants and supermarkets supplied food and water. Hotels and Good Samaritans provided bedrooms and housing. Others offered clothes and daily essentials.

This was, said David Perez, something which touched the hearts of those providing help. He told us: “The response from the members of the public was quite something. There were so many offers to help.

“And I thank everyone for what they did by bringing water, drinks, food or blankets for those searching for the hotels who offered rooms.”

Long-term help is also in place. Arona Mayor José Julián Mena and Patricia Hernandez, Canarian Government Vice President, announced yesterday that the regional government, together with Arona Council, will provide immediate rent subsidies and cover the loss of goods.

They will pay rent of up to 700 euros for “at least a year” in a move signed off by the regional Minister of Employment, Social Policy and Housing.

During the first six months, the rent will be paid in by the Canarian Government, with Arona Council paying the second half. For goods, at least 1,500 euros will be available immediately and the figure could rise, depending on the personal circumstances.

Mayor Mena said: “It’s a start. From there, we will have a comprehensive plan, according to the needs of the people.

If necessary and if required, we will make this beyond a year.

“We have agreed this, between the municipality of Arona and the Canary Islands Government, for those people who have lost everything.”

Patricia Hernandez said the aid, to be granted immediately, will be available from Arona Council’s Town Hall, which will manage the situation.

Mena added: “I hope

the dozen-or-so families will have a home again as soon as possible. Today, we have taken the first step for all the families who have been hit by this tragic event.”

The Mayor also confirmed that the Judge, on the Court of Instruction No. 3 of Arona, is in charge of the investigation.

The two men working in the basement at the time of the collapse have been thoroughly questioned.

The Mayor has confirmed that no licence had been granted for the work, which, it is understood, was in its second week.

One source told Canarian Weekly that just a few days before the tragedy, plaster had been falling from a local in the building.

Arona Town Hall staff, along with the rescue services, worked tirelessly during the days after the collapse.

On Wednesday, Canarian Weekly spoke exclusively with David Perez.

The Minister, visibly

tired, tried to explain how his staff were feeling: “When we got the call, I thought it was not possible,” he recalled.

“I was sure it was just a little accident, or just an untruth. But in 10 minutes, the magnitude of the tragedy was confirmed, and in 20 minutes we were there. I don’t know how. We all flew down there.”

Perez said the Mayor was on the scene inside minutes, taking charge of the rescue efforts.

More than 20 security and rescue services were swiftly in action, and Perez stressed that everyone did their job “in what were very tough conditions.”

He added: “We had two main points, the ‘zero area’ and the co-ordination point in the Cultural Centre. That first hour was so hard. We had people coming in crying ... we were crying!

“We were worried because we wanted to keep the families clear of the press. Also, we wanted to make sure there was no panic, misinformation

and such. It was a fluke that the Cultural Centre was there, and so close.

It really helped the effort.”

Perez said everyone was working 22-hour days, adding: “Sometimes, I felt guilty for sleeping two hours, and so did the others. We felt that we should be there for 24 hours. When I took a shower, or tried to sleep, I just had this sensation that we should still be there.”

Tenerife is a small island in the Atlantic Ocean, and Perez is proud that the resources were in place from the first minute.

“We had over 200 people right there, straight away,” he said. “We were prepared and we had a plan - and that went perfectly.

“If this had happened in Switzerland, in Canada, in Australia, they are a big, big countries, but they couldn’t have done more than we did.”

And Perez was keen to point out the task at hand. “We cried a lot,” he said. “Over the weekend there were lots of emotions, but we had a job to do.

“I remember when the sniffer dogs came. They were trained for two different situations: one for people who are alive and one for those who are not. That was a tough time. But we had so much support.

“The Spanish King sent a message, the Cabildo, the other Town Halls, the public. The support was quite something, and we are all grateful for that.”

madness EVERY motorist knows how congested the TF-1 can be here in the South, and official figures just released show that the problem is getting worse.

More than 75,000 vehicles travel daily between the towns of San Miguel and Arona, via the South motorway - a density which puts this stretch among the most congested in Spain.

Every day, thousands of drivers suffer the frustration of lengthy delays. And the jams are getting worse. The latest figures show the levels of traffic are at their greatest since the economic crisis, in 2007.

The delays then were blamed largely on the turn-offs around Guaza - ironically, at a point where the Cabildo’s Technical Service Maintenance and Operation of Motorways has a measuring station!

THE taxman is widening his net and, in the modern era, it is harder and harder for people and companies to avoid paying their correct dues every year.

Official data revealed that every day in 2015, almost 9,000 more vehicles used these areas, compared with the previous year - a 12% increase.

Should this progression continue into 2018, a figure of 100,000 units in circulation would be reached.

Plaza’s link to sea looks so appealing ONE of the most eagerly-anticipated, ambitious projects in Tenerife is the Plaza de España extension to the sea, which will reconnect the city centre with the coast.

After a lengthy consultation period, the Canarian Government has decided to invest in the Herzog & de Meuron project, which boasts an eyecatching design. True, there is a obstacle because the “Via Litoral” tunnel is one metre taller than the plans show, which could mean a rethink.

It was raised for logistical reasons by the Canarian Government

a few years ago. Yet the Cabildo didn’t seem too concerned when announcing the project at a press conference, although the paddling pool area outside the Cabildo building might have to be tweaked.

The Swiss architect’s idea was to capture “a kind of lava-flow that came from the sea’ into the Plaza, which can’t happen yet because of the tunnel’s current height.

But this is just the first phase of what will still be a lengthy project because the Cabildo, Santa Cruz Council, the Canarian Government and the Port Authority must all agree on the final details before the tender process can even begin.

In recent months, regional mayors and businessmen have raised their concerns about foreseeable problems.

They complain that unlike the North motorway, where traffic jams occur early in the morning, the problem continues at all hours on the TF-1.

They also note that most morning problems are on the west-bound stretch, while in the afternoon and early evening, they occur east-

bound.

The Cabildo is already considering work on a third lane, between San Isidro and Adeje, as a priority in the insular road-planning system.

And Arona Mayor Jose Mena even called for a third lane in the run-up to local elections.

The situation is particularly serious for the tourism sector because it causes serious damage to the Island´s brand as a quality destination.

The South already attracts four million tourists annually, and hoteliers and tour operators are beginning to complain about the grumblings from customers.

One of the most critical voices is that of Victoria Lopez, Vice-President of hotel employer Ashotel, who says the road system is in a “state of collapse”, and adds: “It also has serious risk for emergencies, displacement and the image for tourism.”

La Tejita hotel gets the nod … for now TENERIFE Cabildo has given the green light to a controversial project to build a five-star hotel at La Tejita, in Granadilla de Abona.

There have been numerous anti-hotel demonstrations over the last year and recently, political group Podemos has spoken of its rejection, saying: “We are strongly in favour of maintaining the current landscape and environmental treasures of the area.”

The Cabildo maintains its report on the project shows that the

plan “meets all required standards established by law for the construction of a five-star resort”.

However, there is still a long way to go before a single building block can be laid. The Canaries’ Environment Ministry, and Grana-

dilla Council, will also compile their own, independent reports.

And recently, Granadilla Mayor Jaime González Cejas said he was not keen on the hotel plans because “we always respect the natural spaces of our region”.

This week, Social Security investigators revealed that during 2015 in the Canaries, 447 companies had serious tax irregularities.

Of these, 58 are in danger of having sanctions imposed on their administrations. Yet it is estimated to have cost the state nearly 750,000 euros.

Also, in the fight against illegal employment and fraud, Social Security uncovered 163 offences and 30 administrative “crimes” relating to the Aliens’ Act, which covers the trafficking of humans for labour exploitation.

In the same period, 13 fictitious companies were detected, as well as 163 crimes, 89 forgery cases and 24 crimes against workers’ rights.

The Guardia Civil, together with the Police, last year detected a Social Security fraud of more than 79m euros throughout Spain.

Their findings followed a close investigation of more than 6,500 companies, of which some 2,000 were fined for employing illegal workers.

In addition, 525 victims of human trafficking for labour exploitation were discovered, thanks to all the information received by the Spanish Embassy in Beijing, which discovered numerous irregularities in the process of Chinese nationals.

AS we go to press, the world is in shock following the sudden death of music superstar Prince at 57.

Police were called to a medical emergency at around 9.30am at Prince’s Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Last week, he was in hospital, briefly, in Moline, Illinois.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson, he was married twice - first to his back-up dancer Mayte Garcia. They split in 2000. He then married Manuela Testolini, but they separated in 2006.

Prince recorded more than 30 albums and sold more than 100 million records. He is best known for his hits When Doves Cry, Kiss and Purple Rain.

He become a household name after the success of his 1982

Mum and Dad had ties with terrorists SPAIN’S Guardia Civil, together with units from Algeciras and Granada, have arrested a Moroccan citizen and a Spaniard resident in Granada with links to the DAESH terrorist group.

The two detainees, who are in a relationship, were getting ready to travel to Morocco with their son, a minor who has been afforded all the appropriate protective measures following their arrest.

The Guardia Civil investigation continues, into a group of people connected with the activities of DAESH terrorists, of whom the two detainees were members, together with others who already appear to have joined the gang.

Within the framework of this deep probe, several people who had acted as terrorist suicide bombers in Syria came to light.

Their network maintained contact, electronically, with other likewise members, even inciting some to join up to the terrorist cause from their countries of origin.

Guardia Civil specialists, from its own Information Service, verified that one of the group members - the brother of the Moroccan held - had recently died in a terrorist suicide mission, which led to the couple detained bringing their trip to Morocco forward.

Investigators are still searching the detainees’ homes, and analysing the materials seized. Their aim is to reconstruct the ties between these individuals and the terrorist network associated with DAESH, and uncovering other possible individuals attached to the group in Spain.

Years of conflict with his record companies soured his view on the music industry. But occasionally, Prince would drop the odd new release, which would keep his hardcore fans satisfied.

He was a prolific songwriter, and there could be hundreds of unreleased and unheard songs locked away in the vault.

Prince, a music pioneer, inspired a generation, and he fits comfortably alongside the greatest music artistes.

Low-cost travel is booming

BUDGET airlines carried 1.22 million passengers in the first quarter of 2016, representing a 14.6% increase over the same period in 2015.

And it’s not just the “no-thrills” companies enjoying a surge. according to the Ministry of Tourism figures.

The “traditional” airlines moved more than 2.37 million passengers up to the end of March - 8% up on the same month last year.

The 3.49 million total of international travellers adds up to 10.2% more than the same 2015 period.

Chinese women freed

SPANISH cops, who rescued 29 Chinese women drugged and forced into prostitution, also arrested the same number of people as part of an operation carried out with the help of Chinese police.

The women were forced to work in hotels and nightclubs across the country - and even in their own homes - as part of a human trafficking ring, which has now been smashed.

A police statement said: “The victims were forced to take drugs or medication to overcome their resistance to prostituting themselves.”

Ryanair adds weekly Cork flights

RYANAIR’s new winter 2016 schedule from Cork Airport, in the Republic of Ireland, includes new, weekly services to Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Managing Director Niall MacCarthy said: “So far this year, we have seen passenger numbers increase by over 10%, making us Ireland’s fastest growing airport.

“Launching transatlantic flights from Cork is only the beginning of our planned expansion in Ireland.”

Single air-fares for all islanders IT’S a long-standing debate, but there could finally be a solution to the Archipelago’s local travel-pricing problem.

The Canary Parliament believes it has established the support of all parties to have a single airfare between islands, and it hopes to have the same solution for sea travel.

Ministers want to eliminate large gaps in prices between airlines, especially from small islands to large islands.

Works and Transport Minister Ornella Chacon has, along with Roman Rodriguez, written a thesis.

This has proved popular, despite opposition from Coalition Canarias MP Juan Manuel Garcia Ramos, who is in favour of extending the bonus to residents from 50% to 75%.

He feels this will maintain social aid and promote inter-island busi-

Santa Cruz hits on the marriage scene THE wedding market is really heating up in Tenerife, and some of the big boys are now getting involved.

The Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín, in the centre of Santa Cruz, entered the sector this week with its tagline: “Can you imagine a wedding like this?”

With this sentence the biggest - and some would say the most glamorous - location in the capital made a statement of intent.

The wedding-day rental price of the Auditorium Hall, which has a capacity for 600 guests, is 1,810 euros. There is also the possibility of

booking the Castillo Gallery, which is outdoors, for a competitive 460 euros, although it caters for just 150 people.

Once booked, the Mag Catering & Events company, based in the Auditorium, offers a couple of different menus, from 65 euros per person, and the price includes three hours of “free bar use”.

This includes all house drinks, such as beer, wine and spirits, and also appetizers for all menus; custom-printing service, one waiter per 15 guests; tableware, decorations for banquet centre-pieces … and so on.

If you want the “allinclusive free bar” for longer, you’ll be charged eight euros per person per hour. Children’s

menus cost 25 euros.

Carlos Ascanio, Mag manager for Catering & Events, said: “In terms of a gastronomic experience, the Auditorium is perfect for weddings.

“The menus are based on quality products in which taste, presentation and the kitchen team’s creativity are all of the highest order.

“In addition, we are always open to suggestions from customers to offer them what they want.”

The bride and bridegroom can choose from eight types of menu.

The cheapest is 65 euros per head and the most expensive, costing 90 euros, includes lobster salad, salmon marinated in citrus oil and thyme, timbale of lamb and a host of goodies.

Spanish youngsters facing the breadline SPAIN is said to be among the worst-developed countries for childhood inequality, with more than one-third of children at risk of poverty.

‘Drop new tram for a bus route’ THE Podemos party is calling for Tenerife Cabildo to replace the tram system’s new Line 2 extensions to La Gallega for a system prioritising buses.

The switch, say officials, will not only boost public transport but take advantage of bus lanes and provide a more personal service.

Among its proposals, which, they say, the Cabildo should at least study, is the implementation of an electricityfuelled bus to La Gallega.

Podemos wants this

trialled on a pilot basis, hoping it can be extended to other points on the island.

In addition, it wants the vehicle to be lowrise and have high stops, to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility, or with disabilities.

Another point is that, like the tram, this bus would take precedence at traffic lights.

Podemos claims the model will be cheaper than the introduction of a new tram, which will cost 37 million euros.

Finally, its officials claim that it can be more flexible and even stop at points to suit the traveller, rather than at static train stops, which can be half-a-mile apart.

It was ranked the sixth-worst developed country for childhood income inequality, According to last week’s Unicef “report card”, 36% of children are facing poverty or social exclusion. And inequality has grown more in Spain than in most other developed countries, the family

income gap exceeding 60%. Only rock-bottom Romania, plus Bulgaria, Mexico, Greece and Israel were ranked worse.

The Unicef report states: “This measure of bottom-end inequality captures how far the poorest children are being allowed to fall behind the ‘average’ child in each country.”

Researchers analysed 41 countries from the European Union, and within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), for inequality changes over time.

Denmark topped the charts for the lowest levels of inequality in health, income, educa-

tion and life satisfaction. Israel lounged at the bottom!

Spain, in particular, which was hit hard by the global economic crisis, featured one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe.

And this trait is impacting the well-being of its youngest citizens.

The report adds: “The financial and economic crisis of the recent years has impacted in particular boys and girls in developed countries.

“The past few years have become a laboratory for the effects of inequality for the most vulnerable members of society.”

Since 2008, the average Spanish family’s household income has fallen, with the poorest 10% experiencing an even sharper drop, “leaving the poorest children increasingly lagging behind”, said Unicef.

But despite the youth of Spain facing steeper challenges when it comes to financial struggles, the country has improved all the children’s conditions for health and nutrition.

In fact, it was among the top-10 countries for having a low inequality gap when it came to

health, and took 12th place when it came to education. And only Spain and the US displayed improvement in all health indicators since 2002.

Sadly, Spanish children fell in the bottom third of the life-satisfaction category, which meant there was a sizeable gap between how the happy kids reported feeling.

And Unicef has called on the Spanish Government, when formed, to take up the battle against childhood poverty.

“The Report Card provides a clear reminder that the well-being of children in any country is not an inevitable outcome of individual circumstances, or of the level of economic development, but is shaped by policy choices,” said Dr Sarah Cook, director of the Unicef Office of Research, Innocenti.

“As our understanding of the long-term impact of inequality grows, it becomes increasingly clear that governments must place priority on enhancing the wellbeing of all children today, and give them the opportunity to achieve their potential.”

Not to be sneezed at!

THE flu season is officially over - and it´s been another tough winter in the Canary Islands, with more vaccinations and more deaths and hospitalisations as well.

This was confirmed by the Canarian Government’s Directorate General of Public Health, whose chief, Ricardo Redondas, said he was broadly “satisfied” with the results achieved in terms of vaccination coverage.

more than last season.

But this increase did not correspond to a decrease in severe cases and deaths.

Not surprisingly, the Director-General confirmed that there had been 190 hospitalisations and 12 deaths. Of these, over 90% were in non-vaccinated people, which, according to Redondas, confirms that “vaccination is the only sure thing we have for chronic patients, and the risk of them possibly avoiding hospitalisation or even dodging death”.

Redondas added: “The

flu epidemic has ended, but the strategy and monitoring of the virus is maintained throughout the year.”

The current data could also be a little wonky, confirmed the DirectorGeneral, who made it clear that “many senior citizens suffer from the virus and die in their homes without having a diagnostic confirmation.

“A lot of these do not go through the hospital system and, therefore, there are cases not counted as deaths linked to the virus.”

At last - a port to call our own Free-trade zones for our smaller islands THE Canarian Government is being urged to get more powers for business from the EU and the Spanish Government.

A debate this week on a non-legislative proposal (PNL) was, ultimately, approved unanimously.

The call is for Parliament to support a creation of free-trading zones in the smaller islands of the Atlantic, thus emulating what is already enjoyed by Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

They’ve both had a free run since 1998, and enjoy embargo exemption with several historical ports.

The initiative, present-

Her first bill has already led to extra business for Fuerteventura, which has opened up sea lines with Morocco.

El Hierro is now hoping for similar ties with Cape Verde and, likewise, La Palma with Madeira.

Cabrera underlined the importance of these areas to avoid lost business options, as has happened many times in the past for the smaller islands.

Parliament agreed on the need for these options.

IT has taken more than 500 years, but Puerto de la Cruz - an official town since 1506 is finally getting a port.

Officials have watched and waited over the decades as other Tenerife areas have enjoyed growth from port business.

But all the parties involved have worked out and agreed a structure this week, Puerto la Cruz City Hall and

the Cabildo signing an agreement to convert the dream to reality.

There will a marine park and a port, catering for sports and fishing, plus commercial and tourist activities, which will cost around 160 million euros in total.

It’s just the first step in a new draft for the port and maritime park which, if everything goes well, could be tendered by the end of 2017. But once that process is completed, the port will still take seven years to build. The Cabildo will

provide 72.2m euros - 60% of the maritime section cost, which is budgeted at 120m. The rest is expected to be raised by other administrations and the private sector.

The port project includes a sea wall spanning 1,155 metres.

The entrance width is 88.35m, allowing the berthing of commercial vessels, with a capacity for 700 passengers and 120 vehicles, and small cruise ships up to 80m. The seawall will also help cre-

ate an artificial beach.

A 780-berth capacity has been planned for the port’s sporting area, - 38 of them catering for large yachts. The fishing dock will cover just over 4,642sq/m, to include 24 berths.

In addition, there is a specific area for sightseeing excursions, boats and a sailing school.

The rest of the land area includes underground and surface parking lots; dining and entertainment areas; a flower market and space for a fish market.

As the family prepared to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday yesterday (Thursday), the Duke of Cambridge revealed that his grandmother had been a “strong female influence”, especially during his teenage years.

“Having lost my mother at a very young age, it has been particularly important for me that I had somebody like the Queen to look up to, and who has been there and has understood some of the more complex issues when you lose a loved one,” he said.

William was just 15 in 1997, when his mother was killed in a car crash in Paris.

Following the tragedy, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were criticised heavily for staying in Balmoral with William and his brother, Harry, rather than returning to Buckingham Palace immediately.

William has rarely spoken, publicly, of this as-

pect of his relationship with his grandmother.

But when asked whether he had any particularly fond, childhood memories of the Queen, the Prince recalled her giving him and his cousin a severe telling-off.

A gag-law fine, for snapping the cops A BASQUE photographer has become the first newspaper man to be punished under Spain’s controversial “gag law” for posting images of a police raid on Twitter.

Axier Lopez, a photojournalist, captured the police on camera when they arrested a Basque activist who had failed to appear in court.

He put the photographs on Twitter on

3rd March - yet they didn’t even show the police officers’ faces.

But the Spanish Government responded quickly, labelling his tweet a contravention of the 2015 Ley Mordaza and imposing a 601-euro fine for publishing photos of police without permission.

According to the complaint filed by Spain’s Interior Ministry: “The defendant published images of the police raid in Eibar in his Twitter account @ axierL without any permission.

“The police officers who took part in the operation can be identified by those images, with the risk this poses to them.”

Lopez works for the Basque magazine Argia, which decided it would not pay the fine, calling it “unjust and against the right to press freedom”.

The law, brought into force last July by the conservative Popular Party, is fiercely opposed, and has raised fears that it would used to curb the freedom of the press as well as the right to peaceful pro-

test. Journalist groups have taken a case to the European Court of Human Rights, demanding that the “gag law” be repealed, saying that international human rights organisations have criticised it.

Several people have already fallen foul of the law, including a man whose Facebook comment referred to the police as “a bunch of slackers”.

And a woman who posted a photograph of a police car, illegally parked in a disabled bay, was also fined.

Checking in - as Czechia!

THE Czech Republic, with an acute eye to sales, now wants to be called “Czechia” to make it easier for companies and sports teams to use on products and clothing.

If approved by parliament, the name will be lodged with the United Nations, although the country will retain its full name.

Czechia will, officially, become the short, geographic name, just

as “France” is to “The French Republic”.

The Czech Republic, along with Slovakia, was established in 1993 when Czechoslovakia split in two Some of the country’s best-known exports, including Pilsner Urquell beer and its ice-hockey team, currently use the name “Czech”. But that’s an adjective and cannot be used properly as a name for the country.

Critics say “Czechia” is an ugly name, or too similar to the semi-autonomous Russian republic “Chechnya”.

Brutal bottled water CATALONIA’S regional health authority has revealed that more than 670 people have been affected by an outbreak of gastroenteritis, linked to bottled water, in the north-eastern Spanish region.

The health agency said people had been treated for symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and high fever.

It added in a state-

ment that the bottles had been withdrawn from retail outlets, and that scientific samples had been taken from bottling plants and distributors to determine the source of the outbreak.

The agency refused to name the supplier, but the Grupo Eden Springs company admitted it had withdrawn pallets of bottled water, which came from its source in Font d’Arinsal, near Barcelona.

‘Scarier’ Zika virus spreads through US A WIDER range of birth defects has been linked to the Zika virus, which is “scarier” than first thought, according to Dr Anne Schuchat, of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

America’s public health officials have admitted that its impact on the country could be greater than predicted.

And mosquitoes carrying the virus could travel to more US states than previously thought, said Dr Schuchat. The current Zika outbreak began almost a year ago in Brazil.

It has been linked to thousands of birth defects there and has spread widely through the Americas.

“Most of what we’ve learned is not reassuring,” said Dr Schuchat at a White House briefing on Monday. “Everything we know about this virus seems to be scarier than we initially thought.”

Earlier this year, President Obama asked the US Congress for $1.8bn (£1.25bn) in emergency funding to combat the virus. Meanwhile, the country has been using money totalling $589m

left over from the Ebola virus fund. But, said Dr Anthony Fauci, of the US National Institutes of Health, it was a temporary stop-gap.

He added: “The US now needs more money to fight the mosquitoes and to fund better research into vaccines and treatments. And when the President asked for $1.8 billion, we needed $1.8 billion!”

Doctor Fauci also said there had been recent discoveries about how destructive Zika appeared to be to foetal brains. The rapid spread of the Zika virus has sparked travel warnings across the globe, and the doctor warns that there have also been reports of rare, neurological problems in adults.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has announced that Puerto Rico will receive $3.9m in emergency Zika funding because the number of cases there doubles every week.

In February, the first US case of locally transmitted Zika was reported in Dallas, Texas, but it was caused by sexual contact and not a mosquito bite.

ETA sympathisers in call for amnesty

THOUSANDS upon thousands of people marched through the streets of Bilbao on Sunday, calling for amnesty and the release of hundreds of ETA prisoners still locked up.

The protest was arranged by a group of around 2,000 former ETA prisoners, and senior figures linked to the Basque terrorist group attended the protest, in the northern Spain city.

They included Arnaldo Otegi, a left-wing Basque politician who recently completed a six-year prison sentence for trying to revive an outlawed separatist party.

And Antton López Ruiz, a former ETA militant who spent 26 years in prison for his role in the deaths of 13 people, told press during the march: “We need to release the prisoners and bring back refugees.

“Until this happens, any reconciliation is going to

be difficult because not everyone is going to be home.”

Activists called for amnesty for the 386 ETA prisoners still behind bars throughout France and Spain. They also called for prisoners outside Basque country to be brought home, and for an end of the application of laws which send ETA prisoners outside Basque country.

The terrorist group ETA, which has been fighting for an independent Basque region in northern Spain and southern France since 1968, has been held responsible for the deaths of 829 people, injuring thousands more and kidnapping dozens.

In 2011, ETA announced a “definitive cessation to its armed activity.”

Hate crimes towards Muslims rise rapidly FOLLOWING a series of attacks on mosques, a key Islamic federation insists that anti-Islam hate crimes in Spain increased more than tenfold last year.

No fewer than 534 antiIslam incidents, including online abuse, were recorded last year, which totalled 48 than in 2014.

Mounir Benjelloun, President of the Spanish Federation of Islamic Religious Entities, told news agency AFP: “These types of aggressions increase whenever there is an act of violence in a European country, carried out by Islamic extremists.”

He cited such examples as the January 2015 attack against satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, the police and a kosher supermarket in Paris which killed 17 people.

Benjelloun also spoke of the simultaneous assault on restaurants, a concert hall and football stadium in the French capital last November 2015, which left 130 dead.

Spanish police said on Tuesday that they had identified 14 people linked to far-right groups who took part in a protest outside of Madrid’s main mosque after last month’s deadly attacks on Brussels airport and the metro.

They gathered at the Omar mosque in Madrid, placing a large placard that read: “Today Brussels, tomor-

row Madrid?”

Police said prosecutors were making inquiries to determine whether the 14 could be charged with hate crimes.

Spain’s Union of Islamic Communities issued a statement at the time saying that “extremist groups were determined to manipulate public opinion by trying to group together and channel hate towards Muslims”.

Also on Tuesday, police in Parla, a southern Madrid suburb, arrested a man linked to the far-right on suspicion of throwing red paint on the entrance of a mosque, and painting swastikas on its door.

Riay Tatary, head of the Islamic Commission of Spain, which represents the country’s 1.89 million Muslims, said that since the Brussels attacks, mosques had been vandalised in other Spanish cities, such as Salamanca in the west and Granada in the south.

Spain’s interior ministry recorded a total of 70 hate crimes linked to religious beliefs last year, which was seven more than in 2014.

Benjelloun said the ministry’s figure was lower because, in many cases, victims were reluctant to file complaints with police.

And, he added, some police stations labelled attacks on Muslim property as vandalism instead of “hate crime”.

Hundreds are ‘killed in migrant tragedy’ SEVERAL hundred people, believed to have died after four boats capsized in the Mediterranean, were said by Italian President Sergio Mattarella, to have become a “migrant tragedy”.

Unconfirmed reports suggested the vast majority of those on board the vessels were Somalis, trying to cross the sea from Egypt to Europe.

President Mattarella said at a prize-giving ceremony in Rome that Europe needed to reflect in the face of “yet another tragedy in the Mediterranean in which, it seems, several hundred people have died”.

Some 800 migrants and refugees, he said, drowned on 18th April last year, when their overcrowded fishing boat capsized in waters between Libya and the Italian island of Lampedusa.

The President offered no further details, and neither Egyptian nor Greek officials were able to confirm reports of a major disaster.

But Italian coastguard

officials, who “knew nothing” about it, either, were involved in the overnight rescue of 108 migrants from a semi-submerged rubber dinghy, six people drowning.

Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni added: “We are looking for more details, more information. But what is sure is that we are again with a tragedy in the Mediterranean - exactly one year after the tragedy we had, not in Egyptian but in Libyan waters.

“This is another strong reason for Europe to commit itself, not in building walls but in strengthening our common commitment to-

wards migration, especially towards Africa.”

His plea came as a report by academics accused EU policy-makers of “killing by neglect”, by reducing search-andrescue missions in the Mediterranean.

Mare Nostrum, the Italy-led rescue mission, was scrapped in October 2014 and replaced

by Triton, which deployed fewer ships and prioritised the deterring of migrants over rescue operations.

The change has since, potentially, cost the lives of more than 1,500 migrants, according to the report “Death By Rescue: The Lethal Effects Of The EU’s Policies Of Non-assistance

At Sea”.

A charity warned that the number of migrants braving the perilous journey by sea to Europe is unlikely to drop, despite an EU deal to deport those who have failed to gain asylum.

Sarah Tyler, head of communications for Save The Children International, said: “The numbers will not stop coming because they have no choice but to try to reach Europe.

“Many children have told me that what they are leaving behind is a life not worth living. So, yes, the safe passage has to be implemented, and search-and-rescue measures need to be continued.”

Soria trapped by Panama Papers

It was a considered reaction by the Popular Party minister to his name being linked to the Panama Papers, the 11.5 million internal- document pile from a Panama-based law firm,which were leaked to the media.

The politician also gave up his positions as Congressional Deputy and President of the Popular Party (PP) in the Canary Islands, his home region.

After denying allega-

tions of his involvement in a Bahamas firm and a mirror company in Britain initially, Soria had agreed to appear in Congress next week to provide explanations.

But further emerging information about his alleged ties to a Jerseybased company left Soria on the ropes.

Both Soria and the PP had claimed that the acting minister was not present on the organisation chart of any opaque company.

But documents seen

by Spanish daily El País in the company register of Jersey, showed his signature, confirming that he was director of a company named Mechani-

cal Trading Limited.

Soria explained in a press release that he had held a conversation with acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and informed him of his decision to step down.

“I conveyed my irrevocable decision to resign from the functions that I was tasked with since 21st December, as Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism,” he wrote.

Soria said he made the decision on the basis of “the lack of precise information over events that took place over 20 years ago, and out of consideration for the evident harm that this situation is causing the Popular Party”.

Lone Golden Eagle is no longer around WILDLIFE chiefs believe England’s only Golden Eagle has died, because it has not been seen since late 2015.

The magnificent male specimen, thought to be about 20, inhabited a Lake District site at Riggindale Valley, near Haweswater, but had been without a mate for around a decade.

Haweswater site manager Lee Schofield said: “By this time of year, you’d have expected to see him on display to attract a mate.

“And, as the last golden eagle in England, it’s an element of wildness that has gone.

“There’s no real way of knowing for sure.

It’s a single bird in a huge landscape, and he was of an age that we couldn’t rule out death by natural causes.”

Mr Schofield added: “We’ve not given up hope because he may have found an alternative food source.”

An RSPB spokesman said it was “incredibly sad”, and added that there was “a real sense of loss” among colleagues.

In previous years the bird had been seen “sky dancing” - a series of dives and rises intended to attract a female partner.

It is understood to have been the third of its species to take possession of the Haweswater territory.

The previous one, which disappeared in late 2001 when it was at least 30, was then the oldest-known Golden Eagle in Britain.

These eagles have been present in the Lake District since the

late Fifties, nesting in the Haweswater area initially in 1969.

There are some 440 annual breeding pairs in the UK, found mostly in the open moorlands and mountains of Scotland.

They favour islands and remote glens.

Pairs, who mate for life, have traditional territories, with one nesting site often used for generations Sadly. they have been killed in the past, illegally, and are still poisoned occasionally, or have their nests robbed.

Instant juice, in just two shakes!

A MINIATURE fuel cell, which costs as little as a £1, can generate electricity from urine - and could well be a life-saver for some people.

The fuel cells, which use natural biological processes to turn organic matter - such as pee - into electricity, can produce a renewable and carbon-neutral way of creating power - in two shakes of a lamb’s tail!

The technology was developed by researchers at the University of Bath, Queen Mary University of London and the Bristol Bioenergy Centre.

When urine passes through the microbial fuel cell, bacteria inside it generates electricity.

This power can be stored or used directly to power electrical devices.

While there have been some similar devices created in the past, this new

type of microbial fuel cell is smaller and more powerful.

Crucially, it is also cheaper, which means it could be useful in developing countries.

That is because it uses a carbon catalyst at the cathode, manufactured from glucose and ovalbumin - a protein found in egg white - instead of expensive platinum.

Dr Mirella Di Lorenzo, a lecturer at the University of Bath’s chemical engineering department, said: “If we can harness the potential power of this human waste, we could revolutionise how electricity is generated.

“Microbial fuel cells can play an important role in addressing the triple challenge of finding solutions that support secure, affordable and environmentallysensitive energy, known

as the ‘energy trilemma’.

“There is no single solution to this ‘energy trilemma’, apart from taking full advantage of available indigenous resources, which include urine.”

A single microbial fuel cell can generate two watts per cubic metre, which is enough to power a mobile phone. The team is now looking at how to increase the power output with design tweaks.

Jon Chouler, a PhD student and the study’s lead author, said: “To have created technology that can, potentially, transform the lives of poor people who don’t have access to or cannot afford electricity, is an exciting prospect.”

Details of the research were published in the Electrochimica Acta journal.

MINISTERS in Brazil, watched on TV by millions of demonstrators across the country, have voted overwhelmingly for President Dilma Rousseff to face an impeachment trial.

One by one, during a lengthy procedure, hundreds of members of the lower house of Congress announced their decision via microphone.

A total of 342 of the 513 members in the chamber - a two-thirds majority - was required to see the vote through, and Rousseff’s Workers’ Party conceded defeat before this threshold had been reached.

By the time 342 Yes votes had been counted, the pro-impeachment side had a majority of 215, with 38 votes left to be counted! At this point, 127 had voted against her impeachment, and six law-makers abstained.

Brazil’s Senate must now decide, by a simple majority, whether there are legal grounds for a trial to go ahead over allegations that the country’s first female President manipulated government accounts to support her re-election campaign in 2014.

away, the economy is contracting and inflation soaring. On top of that, a major outbreak of the Zika virus has ravaged the country’s northeast, causing devastating birth defects in some new-borns.

Although Rousseff has not, personally, been charged with corruption, more than 300 law-makers deciding her fate are under investigation for corruption, fraud or electoral crimes.

Many pro-impeachment supporters believe the result is a victory against corruption, one social worker saying: “Impeachment sends a clear message that the politics of this country needs to be cleaned up.”

Kerry’s ‘gut-wrenching’ reminder in Hiroshima IF the US Secretary of State had not previously been keen to get rid of nuclear weapons, he certainly is now following his heart-rending visit to the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

John Kerry, after laying a wreath at the city’s atomic-bomb memorial, said it was a “gutwrenching” reminder of the need to get rid of the dreaded weapons.

Kerry, the first US Secretary of State ever to visit the memorial or the city, made the comments at a press conference.

He added: “It is a display that I will, personally, never forget. It reminds everybody of the extraordinary complexity of choices in war and of what war does to people, to communities, to countries, to the world.”

Some 140,000 people, most of them civilians, were killed when the US dropped its atomic bomb on the city in 1945.

Kerry was joined by foreign ministers from the G7 group of nations, who were holding talks in the city. They laid wreaths at the memorial and observed a oneminute silence in honour of the victims.

As well as the Hiroshima Peace Park memorial, the ministers also visited the Bomb Dome, over which the A-bomb exploded, and the nearby Hiroshima museum, which tells the personal stories of people who died.

Philip Hammond, also present, became the first UK Foreign Secretary to visit the site.

Gay dropped a uranium bomb nicknamed “Little Boy” on Hiroshima. It exploded 600m (1,800ft) above what is now the Hiroshima Peace Dome.

About 70,000 people died immediately, and at least 140,000 people had died by the end of the year through injury and the effects of radiation. The bombing, and a second bomb dropped on Nagasaki three days later, destroying much of the city, forced Japan to surrender and initiated the end of World War II. Nancy Pelosi, US Speaker of the House of Representatives, visited Hiroshima in 2008, but American diplomats have, largely, avoided official visits.

Many in the US believe the bombing was necessary to end the war, and do not want their lead-

ers to take any action which might be seen as an apology.

Kerry said previously that his time in Hiroshima would “revisit the past and honour those who perished”, but he emphasised that his trip was “about the present and the future”.

It also comes amid efforts to strengthen the relationship between the US and Japan, particularly with growing concern about China’s assertiveness in territorial disputes in Asia, affecting Japan and other US allies.

President Barack Obama will be attending a G7 leaders’ summit elsewhere in Japan in May, and there are reports that he is considering a stop in Hiroshima. If so, it will be the first time a sitting US President visits the tragic city.

The pilot reported being hit by an object as the Airbus A320, which took off in Geneva, approached the London hub last Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, Flight BA727, carrying 132 passengers and five crew, landed safely.

Scotland Yard said police based at the airport are looking into the incident. And the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, which investigates civil aircraft incidents, is holding its own probe.

Initial inquiries determined that the object believed to be a drone - struck the front of the plane as it approached the airport.

A spokesperson for BA said: “Our aircraft landed safely, was fully examined by our engineers and was cleared to operate its next flight.

The alleged strike was the latest and most serious in a string of incidents involving drones and aircraft in UK air-

space, with several near-misses reported in the last year.

Steve Landells, flightsafety specialist at the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA), said: “Frankly, it was only a matter of time before we had a drone strike, given the huge numbers being flown around by amateurs who don’t understand the risks and the rules.

“It appears that no serious damage was done on this occasion. But what is clear is that while most drones are flown safely, sensibly and within the limits of the law, much more education of drone-users, and enforcement of the rules, are needed to ensure our skies remain safe from this threat.”

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) “drone code” says they should be kept away from planes, airfields and airports, and not be flown above 400ft.

Last month, a report released by the UK Airprox Board (UKAB) found there were 23 near-misses between drones and aircraft between April and October in 2015.

On 22nd September, a Boeing 777 captain, who had just taken off, reported that a drone passed narrowly down the right-hand side of the airliner.

Investigators concluded that the drone was at the same height - and within 25 metres of the jet. A report was made to police, who failed to trace the drone operator.

CRIME AND TIME

ONE of our Canarian Weekly readers, confused about the In-Out British referendum has asked me to explain certain factors, legal He writes: Dear Sir, The upcoming referendum has created a lot of debate among my friends.’, and there is one thing that makes no sense to us Brits who live here.

What is the law when it comes to being charged with a crime? Does Spanish law trump European Law, because I have heard horror stories that some people can be detained for years without seeing a

judge, or facing charges?

Surely this cannot be right under EU law.

The query has two parts: one refers to the supremacy of European Law and the other to the possibility, under Spanish law, (irrespective of the application of European Law) of being detained for an indeterminate time without seeing a judge, or without the right to a fair trial in reasonable time.

Spanish constitution In relation to “people detained for years without seeing a judge or facing charges” this is not possible, according to Spanish Law. The Spanish Constitution states that preventive detention may not last longer than is strictly necessary to carry out the investigations aimed at clarifying the facts.

And, in any case, within a maximum of 72 hours, the detainee must be released, or made available to a judge.

Criminal Proceeding Act Provisional imprisonment, regulated by this Act, is dictated by the judge only, “when it is objectively necessary, in accordance with the provision of the following items, and when other less restrictive measures for the right of freedom does not exist” (article 502).

Article 503 mentions the circumstances or elements to set it out, such as possible existence of a crime, criminal records, hiding of

evidence, flight risks, etc.

The pre-trial imprisonment will continue until these matters have been checked out. Depending on the circumstances, it may not exceed one year, two years or even six months (to be extended by the judge if justified).

Bear in mind that the investigation period in Spanish law cannot exceed six months 18 months in complex matters - according to last December’s amendment of the Criminal

There’s new hope for skin-cancer patients

Oh, Spanish skies!

EUROPE’S tallest building, The Shard in London, could lose its lofty title following plans by developers in Spain to build an even bigger skyscraper.

ONE-fifth of people, suffering advanced melanoma, were cleared of body tumours after being treated with a pair of immunotherapy drugs.

The first survival figures, regarding the combined use of ipilimumab and nivolumab, were revealed in a study, which showed that of the 142 patients tested, 69% were still alive after two years.

Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, is the sixth-mostcommon cancer in the UK, killing more than 2,000 people in the UK each year.

But British doctors leading the trial said the results were “very encouraging”. And more studies on the emerging field of immunotherapy will be presented later.

The immune system is a powerful defence against infection, but there are many “brakes” built in to stop it attacking our own tissues.

Cancer, which is a corrupted version of healthy tissue, can take advantage of those brakes to evade assault.

Ipilimumab and nivolumab are designed

to cut the brakes, and both have become standard therapies in melanoma.

But most researchers believe combination therapy will be essential.

The trial showed the survival rate after two years for ipilimumab alone was 53% and no patient’s tumours had completely disappeared.

The equivalent figures for combination therapy were 69% and 22% respectively.

However, more than half the patients had severe-to-life-threatening side-effects, which halted their treatment.

Dr James Larkin, who ran part of the trial at London’s Royal Marsden Hospital, told the BBC: “It is very encouraging to see that survival rate.

“It will be important in terms of working out the benefit of these treatments in the longer term.

Nevertheless, it is still a relatively small study.”

A much larger trial, involving nearly 1,000 patients, has already started releasing data, but it has not yet run for long enough to produce survival figures.

Flying Scotsman With Robson Green

Friday 22nd April, ITV1, 21.00 Robson Green tells the remarkable story of Flying Scotsman whilst spending a year with the men rebuilding the most famous steam engine in the world.

If they succeed he will have the opportunity to fullfill a boyhood dream and ride on its footplate.

It is February and Robson meets the works director and team leader, Colin Green, who shows him Flying Scotsman and gets him to do some welding. Robson wants to discover why they believe it is so important to rebuild what some might regard as a boiling kettle on wheels. In search for answers in the Durham Coalfield near his own home, Robson discovers how steam changed the world.

Driving on to Doncaster, the town that built the Scotsman, he meet sprightly 93 year old Peter Townend, who worked in the very same plant and shares his memories of conditions for workers in it. Robson discovers that Peter can hardly hear, a consequence of working in a ‘mad house’ with noise levels unimaginable.

As we reach May, the team are re-wheeling Flying Scotsman and putting on its boiler. Chargehand Greg McGill leads the team for the day and Robson helps wheel expert David Smith to put a tyre on a wheel.

Then he’s off to the North York Moors where he tells a remarkable, and for Robson, emotional, story of how Flying Scotsman came into his family in dramatic fashion. During the General Strike in Britain in 1926 men from his great grandfather’s trade union, The Northumberland Miner’s Federation, derailed the train. Seven men went to jail and Flying Scotsman’s reputation was soured.

At the North Yorkshire Moors Railway he meets historian Robert Gwynne who shows him a brilliant invention by the Scotsman’s original designer, Nigel Gresley, which allowed the train to drive from London to Edinburgh without stopping – a world first - and helped turn Flying Scotsman into a global brand.

Robson experiences a taste of the sauna like heat pouring out of the train’s fire box measuring 42ft square and is shown how this device would have been operated by the crew.

After the end of the Second World War, steam engines became scrap as Britain modernised. Flying Scotsman was bound for the furnace and Robson travels to North Wales to meet the woman whose father saved the engine by stepping in at the eleventh hour and paying £3,000 for the privilege. He meets Penny Vaudoyer on the Ffestiniog Railway, a narrow gauge railway in the Welsh mountains and where her father, Alan Pegler, first focused his passion for steam revival.

Penny tells an open mouthed Robson how her father came into the nine year old’s bedroom to say he had bought a steam engine. With the help of lovely colour 16mm film shot by a friend of her father, she describes how Alan ran the engine around Britain until 1968 when the authorities stopped all steam and Pegler took the Scotsman to America.

John travels along the impressive and picturesque Peak Forest Canal, running through stunning countryside from Buxworth in Derbyshire to Ashton-under-Lyne. Originally built to transport the local limestone, it’s a canal full of surprises, deep locks and a spectacular aqueduct.

Along the way John stops off at the town of New Mills, formerly noted for its coal mining and cotton spinning, and now home to the Swizzels sweet factory. It is here that John dons a hair net and tries his hand at making some of the company’s famous sweetie bars, though he finds keeping up with the assembly line ladies a lot trickier than he first thought.

Further up the canal, John joins a team of junior archaeologists at Mellor Mill who are attempting to unearth the remains of what was once one of the world’s largest mills.

Onwards, and John marvels at the feat of engineering that is the spectacular Marple Aqueduct, Britain’s tallest stone aqueduct, rising nearly 100-feet above the River Goyt. John says: “It’s magic, I love this, we’re gliding across the sky…this is one of the great sights of Britain. It’s just so wonderful, this is Britain at its absolute best.”

Leaving the aqueduct behind, John reaches Hyde, once a thriving manufacturing area, but an area that has seen a decline over the last 50 years. However, local boxing legend Ricky Hatton, staunchly proud of the area, has been determined to turn things around, offering new opportunities to local youngsters.

As Ricky tells John: “I won four world titles in two weight divisions, but I always see myself as the youngster off a council estate. I’m very, very proud of my roots.”

As John braves the boxing ring for a spar with Ricky, will he live to reach his final destination of Ashton-Under-Lyne?

Louis Theroux spends time at King’s College Hospital in London, a specialist liver centre, where he immerses himself in the lives of patients in the grips of alcohol addiction and the medical staff trying to make them better.

Alcohol addiction is the most common addiction in the UK. Many people drink more than they should, but the patients Louis meets at King’s are drinking far more than normal, sometimes to the point of self-destruction. Louis explores the effects this is having on their lives and the consequences for their loved ones, when drinking loses its social aspect and becomes a potentially fatal compulsion.

There are many reasons why people become addicted to alcohol and Louis looks at why it is impossible for some to stop drinking - even when it is killing them. To outsiders it may seem like an easy decision, but it is nowhere near that simple. Louis spends time with patients and their families as they struggle to find a way out of their addiction to alcohol, before it’s too late.

The Durrells ITV1, 20.00 Louisa is left feeling confused following an awkward encounter with Sven. Questioning where her relationship with him is going she finds herself accepting a date with the surprisingly spruced up Captain Creech. In her newly acquired gown courtesy of a begging mission from the Countess, Louisa has every hope that her date will make Sven jealous. But has the previously rum-soaked Creech really turned over a new leaf?

Desperately, waiting for news on his first novel, Larry goads Leslie to the extent where Leslie locks him in the toilet, not knowing it is where Gerry has temporarily stored two bats. When one accidentally dies due to Larry’s predicament, Gerry demands a funeral for the creature.

The death motivates Gerry to start a Centre for Scientific Learning and the family realise just how passionate he feels about wildlife they’re not so sure about his newfound love for taxidermy, however.

Slightly bored at reading trashy romantic novels to the Countess, Margo’s head is turned by the attractive gardener, Angel. Feeling dowdy she takes advantage of the Countess’s beautiful collection of Haute Couture clothes but is worried when Dennis, who seems a little irked by Margo’s presence, catches her. Margo immediately fears her new job will be over before it has really began.

Having had enough of Leslie’s behaviour, Louisa throws him out of the house. However, he takes to his newfound freedom surprisingly well and moves in with thugs, Sotos and Fotis. Despite being the brunt of their jokes, he quickly falls into their bad ways and finds himself embroiled in a burglary. When devious farmer, Crippenopoulos (George Kopsidas) accuses Leslie of shooting his turkeys, he finds himself in front of the local judge and before he knows it, the charges are trumped up to include armed robbery. Louisa starts to regret moving her family to Corfu and resorts to desperate measures to free her son.

Gabby Logan presents live coverage of the 36th London Marathon as worldclass runners and 38,000 fundraisers compete in one of the world’s most famous races. Eliud Kipchoge beat twotime winner Wilson Kipsang last year in a thrilling sprint finish, with fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto in third.

All three compete in this year’s elite men’s race. Other challengers include Kenenisa Bekele and Ghirmay Ghebreslassie. Ethiopian Tigist Tufa defends her title against compatriots Mare Dibaba and Aselefech Mergia. David Weir bids for a record seventh win in the men’s wheelchair race, having lost out last year to American Joshua George. In Wild Australia, Ray Mears delves into the spectacularly diverse Australian landscape to look at some of the weird and wonderful life forms that are able to live and survive in the land Down Under.

From the expansive waters of the Great Barrier Reef and the vast wilderness of Arnhem Land, to the teeming Cooper Creek billabongs and the ancient heartland of the rainforest, each episode sees Mears explore the dramatic physical geography of the region, the extreme weather conditions that occur there and the wildlife species that have adapted to survive in those environments.

Mears encounters rare and extraordinary creatures, such as the prehistoric cassowary bird, the weedy sea dragon, and the tree kangaroo, as well as witnessing a three-month-old humpback whale calf learning to swim in preparation for the long migration to Antarctica. Ray even ventures deep underwater himself as he gets up close with some giant manta rays and green sea turtles.

Travelling among the dense eucalyptus forests of the Bush, the scarlet sands of the Red Desert and the dramatic shoreline of the southern coast, Mears meets with local wildlife experts and guides, witnesses the ancient tradition of farming with fire, makes his way through a giant flock of magpie geese as he traverses some dried up mudflats, discovers a gallery of ancient aboriginal art and comes face-to-face with a giant saltwater crocodile.

In episode one, Ray is off on a marine adventure that promises humpback whales, giant turtles and an abundance of exotic fish and birds, as he explores the Great Barrier Reef.

Starting on the Queensland mainland, Ray takes a boat out to Hervey Bay with whale expert Wally Franklin.

One of the best places in the world to find humpback whales, Hervey Bay is visited by whales every year as they make an extraordinary 5000-kilometre migration from their tropical breeding area north of where Ray is, to the feeding grounds in Antarctica.

Tom Rosenthal, Joel Fry and Ryan Sampson will return in a third series as the much loved under-achievers, Marcus, Stylax and their feckless slave Grumio, in the multi-award-winning and BAFTA-nominated sitcom set in ancient Rome.

Alongside their regular nemeses, this year our Plebs will encounter a legion of new Roman recruits: visiting parents (Samantha Spiro, Danny Webb, Steve Edge), a brazen Vestal Virgin (Michelle Keegan), a doping discus thrower (Ingrid Oliver), a theatrical grande dame (Miriam Margolyes) and an ancient weatherman (David Bamber).

It’s one year on in the Eternal City, as we flash forward all the way to 25BC. The new series picks up where the last one left off, with our three lowly Plebs still living in a squalid block in the worst part of town, which is now presided over by the ruthless Landlady (Maureen Lipman), as the fate of the unscrupulous Landlord (Karl Theobald) is still to be revealed. They work dead-end jobs for Rome’s third largest grain supply company, under the direction of their fearsome boss Flavia (Doon Mackichan), and although the Games are in town, they can’t get tickets for any event - not even the pig chase.

Never Again: Fear And Faith In Paris BBC1, 22.45

The end of April marks the Jewish Passover festival, when Jews remember the Israelites escaping slavery in ancient Egypt. This documentary will explore a much more recent phenomenon, the decision of 8,000 Jews to leave France in 2014, concerned about terror attacks and rising anti-Semitism in the country.

We will hear from the families most affected, and explore the reasons behind the rise in anti-Semitism. With insight from those who live in the notorious Paris suburbs, often accused of being a breeding ground for anti-Semitism, and from Lassana Bathily, a Muslim from the suburbs who saved Jewish lives during the kosher supermarket attack in 2015.

Many French Jews are coming to London, and one synagogue has been transformed recently by French arrivals, with their congregation in a few years becoming 90 percent French. Is the climate for Jews any better in Britain?

For years fishermen have been vanishing in Alaska’s remote and unforgiving wilderness – their deaths unseen, their bodies never found. Are bad weather and boating accidents the only culprits, or could there also be an unidentified killer at large – a cold water monster strong enough to drag a fisherman under the surface? For freshwater detective Jeremy Wade, a recent fatal incident sends him on a search for possible suspects – first up-river through treacherous rapids, then down to the river-mouth where the icy waters are swarming with hungry sharks. Yet it’s a bizarre and unexpected beast, hauled up from the depths, that eventually emerges as his deadliest contender.

Back in September 2015 in a recording studio in London, Mumford and Sons joined up with acclaimed Senegalese musician Baaba Maal and London/Malawi duo The Very Best to record together. They reunite in Maidstone to perform on the show. Making her UK TV debut is Nantes-born Heloise Letissier, AKA Christine and the Queens.

She is known for her energetic and visually arresting live shows which see her interact with four male dancers and a shadowy threepiece band. Making their Later... debut are Field Music, who are essentially brothers David and Peter Brewis. They play a couple of tracks from their most recent LP Commontime.

Mary Beard’s Ultimate Rome: Empire Without Limit BBC2, 21.00 This new series is driven by questions which have fascinated and intrigued Mary Beard throughout her whole academic career. Why the Romans? What made them special? What formula for empire building did they have and why does it still seem so relevant today?

Alongside these more familiar queries, Mary asks the unexpected questions...

Of all the creation myths for an empire to have, why was the story of Romulus and Remus being suckled by a she-wolf, so potent? Why did the Roman Empire - so aggressive and expansionist - so mistrust the idea of an emperor? Their most important word was ‘citizen’; while ‘rex’ (or king) was hated as meaning only tyranny. How did they persuade their subject peoples to become Romans and why, to an extent, were they so tolerant of local diversity? And what, in the end, brought about the Empire’s downfall? Was it really rampaging barbarian hordes, or something more complex?

We see how Rome accumulated territory and allies throughout Italy, building an unstoppable momentum, and eventually taking on its great rival – Carthage. As Rome’s territory expanded, Mary explores how Romans dealt with new cultures and ideas, in particular in the Greek East, where Rome came face to face with the sophisticated Hellenistic world. Here, this meant a complex mix of brute force and cultural cringe, whereas in Western Europe, Mary finds evidence of methods akin to outright genocide.

In typical myth-busting style, Mary argues that the period of greatest Roman expansion occurred when Rome itself was little more than a provincial backwater. The marble, monumental Rome we know came about because of imperial conquest – not the other way round. Likewise, the creation and possession of an empire transformed the politics of Rome forever, creating the conditions for oneman rule, and ending the centuries-old Roman Republic.

In this brand new series Emma Willis follows the inspirational and emotional stories of people whose lives are transformed by the power of modern medicine, people who are all hoping for miracles.

In episode one, Emma is in Aberdare, South Wales, to meet nine-yearold Garin Morgan, his parents Ashley and Adele, and big sister Emily.

Despite being a strong, healthy baby, Garin soon began to show signs that he was different to other children. At the age of two he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and his parents were told it meant their son would never walk.

Dad Ashley says: “That hit me very hard. How do you feel? How do you cope? You start running through his life in fast-forward. How’s he going to get a job? How’s it going to affect his life as an adult?”

Garin tells Emma: “At playtime it is quite hard for me. Sometimes some of my friends play football. I feel quite upset because they’re all having fun and I’m just like on my own and nobody to play with.”

Asked by Emma what his miracle would be, Garin says: “To play football.”

In the same week Garin was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, his mum Adele fell ill and was told she had multiple sclerosis, meaning she too is in a wheelchair and unable to walk unaided. It’s another reason his parents are longing for him to leave his wheelchair behind.

For years, Garin and his parents have hoped that modern medicine would offer him the chance of making his dreams come true, and now, thanks to surgery pioneered in America, there’s a possibility it will.

Just two months after a successful operation at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, in which nerves that connect Garin’s brain to his legs were cut, and the subsequent physiotherapy, this young boy’s life could be about to change forever. As he prepares to step from his wheelchair and walk unaided for the very first time his family and specialist team urge him forward.

Nearly a year later Emma catches up with the family, and there’s a surprise visit to Cardiff City Stadium for Garin, who has the chance to fulfil his dream of playing football and scoring a goal.

Filmed intimately over two years, and from just days after he lost his limbs, filmmaker Leonardo Machado’s documentary follows Alex’s incredible story as he seeks to rebuild his life and his relationships and to reinvent himself.

And if that is true, Tenerife vocalist Roxy Rosario could be forgiven for considering herself something of a celebrity.

Appearing on the most recent series of The Voice España, she has recently been rubbing shoulders with four famous names from the international music

scene: Alejandro Sanz, Malú, Antonio Orozco and Laura Pausini.

All four were judges and coaches on the show, and fought between each other to have Roxy and her powerful voice on their team.

A remarkable journey, which culminated with four stunning performances on prime-time television, in front of 20 million viewers, began when she was asked to record a song for a friend.

Unaware that the recording would be used to register her for the competition, she was taken by surprise, pleasantly, when the call came for her to attend an acapella casting in Las Palmas.

Roxy, passed the first big test by singing Fallen, by Alicia Keys, then

flew to Madrid, where she took part in the televised auditions.

She won over the superstar panel with her rendition of Jocelyn Brown´s Somebody Else´s Guy. Ultimately, Roxy didn’t emerge victorious, but she made it to the final 12 from 45,000 initial hopefuls. And her profile at local and national level has, consequently, risen to new heights.

Last summer she was thrust on to the Ibiza club scene, where she performed weekly to more than 10,000 revellers at the Amnesia nightclub.

Roxy has built up a following of more than 13,000 across several social-media platforms, and she also makes regular appearances on El Dia TV, a local Tenerife station.

Seizing the moment in

February, she released her first single, Trust, a poignant and tender piano ballad, composed for her three-year-old son, Khayanno. It is now available for download on iTunes and Spotify.

The wheels are already in motion to launch a club version of the song for the summer, with a second single following soon after.

And, despite being inundated with offers to perform elsewhere around Europe, she has chosen to stay in the Canaries, where she is very much in demand, with three popular shows.

Roxy performs a Whitney Houston Tribute and a Disco/Soul Fever show. And she is the lead singer for Joe’s Band, a funky, six-piece ensemble, who play dif-

ferent venues at weekends around Tenerife.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

Sky’s the limits for Leigh-Hannah WE are now into the second half of the Tenerife Loves Karaoke qualifying rounds and last Wednesday this well-established competition took us to a new TLK venue Puerto Colon’s stylish Sky Bar. It looked as though it would be a quiet night when we arrived.

But we were asked if we could start a little later, because of the televised football.

And making use of the extra time to take more registrations (excuse the pun) enabled us to put on a great show, albeit a little later than usual.

Judges were Sky Bar Manager Baz, Sky Bar resident compère and performer David James Hodgkinson AKA Didi, Oasis Fm’s Jo Rham, and former radio presenter and entertainer Darren Clarke.

First up - and it’s never easy being first - was Karin. Her rendition of Gladys Knight & The Pips’ Midnight Train To Georgia, performed with gusto, received rapturous applause and set the standard for the rest of the night.

Nathan, who has entered Tenerife Loves Karaoke in previous

years and is certainly a crowd favourite, was up next, singing Take That’s classic Relight My Fire. Nathan had the whole crowd on their feet and got the biggest cheer of the night.

Nena, TLK’s most avid supporter this year, came next, with James Blunt’s You’re Beautiful, and she “performed” it beautifully.

Long-time resident Gary followed with a Bobby Darin karaoke favourite Mack the Knife and, like all contestants, he received great applause.

Our next singer was an early entrant Terry, who had waited patiently for a chance to show off his talent.

And he certainly did that with his own take on the Dr. Hook hit A Little Bit More.

And the crowd certainly did get a little bit more. Just go to Tenerife Loves Karaoke facebook page and watch Terry’s dance

moves! At this point a comfort break was in order, to allow everyone to could replenish their glasses and use the bathroom.

During this time, Darren Clarke took to the stage and entertained the crowd.

After the break the next singer up in search of a place in this year’s grand final was Keeley, singing the beautiful song Killing Me Softly With His Song impressively.

With only three contestants remaining, Becky sang Adele’s Rolling in the Deep with supreme confidence - and the biggest smile you’ll ever see!

The penultimate singer was LeighHannah, who chose a difficult song - and another Adele classic - Make You Feel My Love, which came over superbly.

Our last performer was late-entrant Sammy, and when the 21-year-old was called to the stage, she came running!

Sammy performed a difficult musical number from Rent Out Tonight. The song was delivered very maturely and with a lively vocal quality and Sammy did give the crowd a

little something unexpected!

After a short break, in which Didi entertained the crowd with some Ska numbers, show host Gordon Slaney announced the successful sing-off trio, comprising Karin, Becky and Leigh-Hannah.

Karin drew the short straw and sang first, opting for another song we hadn’t heard in the contest this year. Your The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me. It was an excellent version and Karin put everything into the performance.

Becky was drawn to sing second, and with Journey’s upbeat Don’t Stop Believin’ - complete with that smile - she put in a solid performance.

Last on stage was Leigh-Hannah who choose Valerie, by Amy Winehouse. It was delivered impeccably, with control and emotion … but would it be enough?

The question was soon answered, and Leigh-Hannah had secured her first win, and a place in the 2016 final.

Food review: Nutters Cafe, Golf del Sur

It’s tasty, with a zing I TRIED something a little different this week while in Golf del Sur. We usually feature fullyblown restaurants in this review column, so it was a nice change to visit Nutters Cafe, by the middle square of San Blas, just next to the taxi rank.

Nutters has been owned for two years by Sarah, who comes from Cornwall. And she is building a good reputation for good, homemade food and the excellent customer-service. And boy, it’s well deserved!

Luckily, we missed the afternoon rush and took a table on their covered terrace. Sarah came out to greet us with her open, friendly manner, and we were soon chatting like old friends.

The menu here has a “daily specials” board,

comprising traditional British Fayre, including home-made quiche, hand-made Cornish pasties, sausage rolls, jacket potatoes with various fillings and a range of savoury pies.

When the wife and I eat out, we always choose different items from the menu (the Spanish-style tapas and food-sharing appeals to us). But this

time we both selected a similar looking main course.

I chose the Farmers’ lunch, which included baked, hand-carved ham off the bone, mature cheddar, homemade coleslaw (so tasty and fresh) minute silverskin onions, fresh crusty bread, butter, salad garnish and pickle.

The wife had the Fisherman’s Lunch, which

had an excellent portion of smoked salmon and plump Icelandic prawns in a Marie Rose sauce, plus a zingy lemon-andthyme cream cheese with salad, crusty bread and coleslaw.

The hand-carved Ham was the best I have ever tasted on this Island, and the wife said the same about her prawns.

After finishing our lunch and a superb,

chilled glass of White Zinfandel, we decided to share a dessert.

Sarah told us of the dessert on offer, including banoffee cheesecake, chocolate fudge cake and carrot cake, all served with cream or ice-cream.

We settled on the chocolate fudge cake with cream, and two spoons … I know, I’m an old romantic. It was moist, chocolatey, with a huge portion of ice-cream.

Lovely!

Nutters Cafe also serves an extensive, allday breakfast, or maybe you fancy crumpets and butter, or home-

made, Scotch pancakes.

Sarah told us that all the cakes will be soon made on the premises, thanks to Hannah, Nutters’ latest member of staff.

A kids’ menu will also be introduced in time for their summer holidays.

If it’s just a quick, freshly-made wrap or sandwich to take away in your lunch-hour, making an afternoon of it, or just a drink, you really must try Nutters Cafe, in San Blas, on Golf del Sur. It is open Sunday-Friday from 9am-5pm, and on Saturdays from 9am4pm.

Navy facing battle over ‘brutal’ food SUCH is the “brutal” food dished up for Royal Navy sailors in their canteens that they have been forbidding from photographing it and sending the pictures to the social media to garner criticism.

The high level of food complaints have led to photo bans for personnel at HMS Sultan and other naval sites.

Years of griping about the meals at the Gosport training base can be

found on social media, with sailors complaining that it is “terrible”, “brutal” and “slop”.

Another commenter said that at HMS Sultan, he had endured the “worst-ever case of food poisoning I’ve ever had”.

Tim Loughton, Tory MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, said the volume of complaints was so high that sailors had been banned from online criticism.

He asked Defence Min-

ister Mark Lancaster: “Are you aware that the standard of food, for the military at HMS Sultan and other similar naval establishments, has become the source of such complaints that service personnel have been banned from taking photographs and using social media to critique it?

And, pressing the point, he added: “What are you doing to make sure our servicemen and women are being properly looked

after in such a basic area as food?”

Mr Lancaster replied: “Defence personnel are offered core meals covering breakfast, lunch and dinner with set calorific and nutritional standards, and this includes unlimited access to carbohydrates and vegetables.” The Minister, a former soldier who said he had sampled Armed Forces food regularly, added: “Personally I’ve not experienced a poor

standard of food. “However, the normal process is for there to be a complaint via the chain of command, although I’m more than happy to look into the matter for my honourable friend.”

Last month, soldiers disgusted by Army food, shared pictures of raw chicken, maggot-riddled tomatoes and mouldy eggs which, they said, had been served to them in canteens.

One anonymous sol-

dier wrote an open letter to commanders saying: “Would you feed a homeless person undercooked or raw chicken?

“Would you serve it to a paying customer in a restaurant? Would you feed it to your kids for their dinner?

“I would like to think the answer to these questions is ‘No, of course not’.”

The Army promised to investigate the complaints.

Okay, it’s nice to have a little, expensive item to mix in with your basic capsule pieces. But overdoing the designer names can look cheap and cost you a fortune!

With the rise of online shopping, and branded

goods available to the masses, putting together a new wardrobe is cheaper - and easier - than ever before. So, how do you compile your collection to make it look as though it cost the earth but, actually, didn’t leave a hole in your Guess purse?

Piecing together classic items, which don’t shout out where they came from, is the way to a wardrobe to see you through all the seasons.

Pick practical items, which you can mix-andmatch with most of your clothing.

Try to stick to a chosen colour scheme. This way, you won’t ever be stuck for something to wear.

If you’re going to splash out, make sure it’s on a timeless piece that won’t date in a year or so.

Never go for a garish, expensive item because it will be seen, and never forgotten, for all the wrong reasons.

There are stores and price ranges out there for everyone to look good, so there are no excuses.

Going for a cheaper end of the range doesn’t mean you’re not going to look just as good as in something more expensive. It’s all about how you put it together, and what type of clothing you’re opting for.

As they say, money doesn’t buy taste!

Eat less sugar for a healthier baby

By Val Sainsbury EATING sensibly, while pregnant, is very important.

It is tempting to “eat for two”, which wouldn’t be as bad if the foods involved were healthy!

Unfortunately, the diets of many expectant women include so much sugar that they are putting their unborn babies at greater risk of developing heart disease.

Experts have now discovered that consuming large quantities of fructose, commonly found in processed foods and fizzy drinks, is linked to a higher number of risk factors for heart disease.

The findings could have implications for women across the world. Studies have shown a link between

fructose consumption and the rise in rates of cardiovascular disease, obesity and Type-2 diabetes.

Study leader Antonio Saad, from Galveston’s University of Texas Medical Branch, said: “We found that when the mother has a high intake of fructose in her diet throughout pregnancy, her offspring is more at risk of developing adult obesity, high blood pressure and metabolic dysfunction, all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

“This effect is more pronounced in female offspring. Limiting intake of high-fructoseenriched foods and beverages during pregnancy may have a great impact on the child’s future health.”

His team investigated the effects of a highsugar diet in pregnant mice. Half were given water, sweetened with 10% fructose, to mimic levels in most soft drinks.

A control group were given just water, for the

duration of their pregnancies. Otherwise, the diets were the same for both groups.

After weaning, the pups were given water and a normal mouse diet, and evaluated after a year.

Twelve months is considered to be middleage for mice, because their life expectancy is about two years. Researchers measured abdominal fat tissue and liver fat, using CT scans.

They conducted blood tests to measure glucose concentrations, insulin, total cholesterol and triglycerides (types of fats found in the blood), and leptin - a hormone made by fat cells that regulates energy balance by blunting the sense of hunger.

The male and female offspring, born to the mice who drank the fructose-sweetened water only, were more likely to show higher peak glucose levels and higher blood pressure.

The female offspring of those fed the fructose-enriched water were heavier.

They had higher percentages of abdominal-fat tissue, liver fat and insulin resistance, as well as lower concentrations of leptin - the satiety hormone - than those born to the mice on water.

None showed any differences in total cholesterol or triglycerides, regardless of group or gender.

These findings were recently published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Summer loving

By Miruna Voicu THERE’S no doubt that Summer is on the way, because temperatures are starting to rise. This is always a busy time of year for rental properties here and, with so much uncertainty in other parts of the world, possibly even more so.

If you rent out your property to tourists, you can take some steps to protect your investment. Minimise your maintenance programme - this is the time of year to start thinking about it.

It´s also a proven fact that if your place is decorated nicely, and is clean and well-presented, people will treat it with more respect than if it is grubby and poorly-equipped. First impressions count.

Take a few, sensible precautions to protect your belongings. Don’t furnish your rental property with pieces of sentimental value, in case they get lost, or broken.

It may be an idea to have a lockable cupboard in the property, where you can put away that treasured photo of granny, or expensive vase. There are plenty of decorative items which are cheap and cheerful, and will dress-up your property.

People on holiday are here to have a good time. Children, in particular, can be excitable, and a bit rough with your furniture.

There is also the added

problem of sun-cream, which can easily stain sofas and beds, so put a throw over the sofa, particularly if it is a pale colour.

If you have a leather (or faux-leather) sofa, leave instructions on how to clean it. It will be damaged, permanently, if cleaned with harsh chemicals, even if done with the best of intentions!

Choose bedspreads that can be washed and dried quickly, and don’t need ironing. Use mattress and pillow covers, and have a spare set, so they can be washed at each changeover date.

This helps keep the property presentable and clean.

While it is unlikely that most visitors will cook gourmet meals indoors every night, there should be some kitchen facilities to keep them happy, so they can prepare snacks and light meals.

Ensure there is adequate seating for the number of occupants, both for relaxing and dining, although this may also include outside areas.

Reasonable wearand-tear is one thing.

But if your curtains are dirty or faded, consider replacing them with coloured sun-curtains that provide privacy and darkness, and which also keep out the heat.

Try to look at your property as if you were arriving on holiday there for the first time, and think what your first impression would be. It may be that you just need a new throw, a few cushions and a pair of curtains to give your property the wow factor.

Shakespeare and our Brit authors A GROUP of local, English-language authors, for the first time, will play an active role in the Adeje Book Fair, today (Friday) and tomorrow.

The event takes place in the parking lot alongside Adeje School of Music, and this year is extraspecial because it marks the 400th anniversaries of the deaths of Shakespeare and Cervantes.

The authors, from England and Spain respectively, have long been considered two of the most important influences on literature.

And even now, their words resonate. Some of today’s sayings, whose roots may not be recognised, are actually descended from these incredible wordsmiths: Shakespeare’s “All that glitters (or ‘glisters’ in the original) is not gold” and “Bated breath”, derive from The Merchant of Venice; “Be-all and the end-all”, Macbeth; “Neither a borrower nor

a lender be”, Hamlet”, plus Cervantes’ “Thou has seen nothing yet”, Don Quixote. There are so many more, but while we can’t have Shakespeare as an extra-special guest this weekend, there are a number of English language authors who live and write here in Tenerife. They will available for booksigning sessions, and also to meet the public.

Throughout the weekend, there will also be a host of other activities, celebrating local authors, as well as Cervantes and Shakespeare.

And, above all, the written word.

Music to learn by…

SPECIAL concerts, organised

by Adeje School of Music and Dance (EMMA), are helping to enlighten the borough’s youngsters of the school’s facilities.

They will also open their eyes to programmes held in Adeje’s public education centres.

The EMMA, with Councillor Carmen Rosa González Cabrera at the helm, along with Education Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, has been designing educative concerts for four years.

And this year, more than 600 students have already attended various sessions.

“The primary objective is to bring music closer to the borough’s student body,” said Cllr Cabrera. “It also enables them see, first-hand, the resources we have on offer at the Adeje School of Music and Dance.

“The Council is always looking for ways to engage with the borough’s education centres to help enhance training and education programmes, incorporating music as a learning tool.”

The series of mini-concerts involved EMMA’s teaching staff demonstrating the historical

evolution of each instrument and the many ways it can be played, be it wood, brass, string - or even the human voice.

Demonstrations were given in singing, dance, guitar, saxophone, violin, cello, tuba, clarinet, trombone, piano and drums. And those attending were encouraged to ask questions and see the role each instrument or dance

played in the performance.

Councillor Cabrera, added: “These concerts will continue throughout the 2016-2017 academic year because the Council are committed to bringing music to everyone.

“We have seen the valuable work our school is doing in helping promote our talented young people in their artistic endeavours.”

With micro-chipping,

you’re giving them the best chance of being found and safely returned to you, should they wander off.

A recent study showed that fewer than 2% of cats, without microchips, were returned home.

However, if a cat is micro-chipped, the returnto-owner rate is 20 times higher. All cats should wear a safety collar and tag, with a contact number of their pet parent.

But, only a micro-chip provides permanent ID that cannot fall off, be removed, or become impossible to read.

They are not expensive - some 20-30 euros which, over your pet’s life, is a small sum to pay.

We are now in the season for many hundreds of kittens to be born. If you know of or find any kittens - or even pregnant mothers - please contact us immediately?

Don’t leave it until the kittens are big and running around. If we are informed early, we can make a decision about the optimum time to remove them from where they are, and home

them. If they are safely with their mother, we could leave them there for a few days/weeks, and monitor them. If they are in danger, or not with their mother, we may remove them, immediately.

WE keep hearing terrible stories of more and more abandoned dogs and puppies, who have been ill-treated and dumped on the streets like a piece of rubbish.

Believe it or not, even a one-month-old pup, found in the road, had heartless motorists driving around it to avoid contact.

Fortunately, one kind person stopped to pick it up and called the police.

It’s such a cruel way to treat these poor animals, who love us unconditionally throughout their lives.

On a lighter note, please remember that tomorrow (Saturday) at the refuge, we are staging our Spring Clean Event, for which we are asking friends of the refuge to help us bath 200 dogs.

Everyone will be given one to bath, brush and even take for a walk if they wish.

We pamper our dogs as much as possible, but they really love the extra attention you provide because it is a wel-

come break from their daily lives in kennels.

So please, if you can spare the time, drop into the refuge and make at least one dog extremely happy.

Grateful thanks We are thankful for all the support from our many volunteers and supporters, of all nationalities.

You help us in so many ways … adoptions, dogwalking, plus donations of bedding, sheets, tinned food and towels.

You also help ease the pain and suffering of some of our many strays, who may have endured years of physical, and mental, abuse.

Paul breaks Palms’ heart

TERRACE Bar, in Amarilla Golf, hosted the finals of the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup and Plate - and there were contrasting finals.

The Cup showdown was a thriller which was decided the wrong side of midnight after a contest that really could have gone either way.

They share a venue, and there was lots at stake as Tenerife Hammers A and Palms B locked horns. As former winners, Hammers A were slight favourites and captain Paul gave them the perfect start as he despatched Shammy in a tight opener.

Wayne took the second frame to hit back for Palms instantly, and Graeme coolly despatched Craig to give them a brief lead.

Fritzel has been around the track in this league and, after a nervy mistake from Shai (and No, it wasn’t down to the vodka!) he finished sweetly to make it 2-2 after the opening set.

The next set was no different.

One side would lead and the other would come back.

Paul took frame five for the Hammers and Graeme then sevenballed Fritzel to level.

Wez had Lady Luck to thank after a poor miss from Shammy gifted him frame seven, while Barry kept his cool in the vital eighth. Craig slowly tied himself up in knots as Barry “oldmanned” his way home.

You could feel the tension, as could the large crowd watching. Who would crack first?

Frame nine saw Paul take on Wayne, who finished the season ranked No.2 in the standings.

And it was Wayne taking control. He had a few chances but failed to hammer them home.

Paul had a simplelooking finish. He rolled in the last red and had a straight black into the middle bag - a shot he would make 101 times out of 100 - yet he jawed it!

It was a reminder that a match is never won until it is won. Wayne accepted the early Christmas present and Palms were ahead.

Frame 10 saw Shammy potting balls early.

Wez dragged himself back into it, but was facing a tough black.

But has been in a few cup finals and his experience showed as he smoothly levelled the match. The Hammers joy was short-lived,

however, as the impressive Graeme again accounted for Fritzel to leave Palms a frame away from the cup. And, deep into that last frame, they looked set for glory. Craig had one ball left but Barry was a good favourite with three potable balls remaining. He had a longish pot that would have been much easier for a right-hander and he was just out.

Craig then produced two fine doubles to take the contest into a play-off. Captain Paul was always stepping up for the Hammers, but Barry had a tough decision to make.

Graeme was three

from three and potting for fun, while Wayne was their player of the season and ranked No.2 After a five-minute “discussion”, Wayne was given the nod. It was a nervy encounter and, slowly, Paul’s extra experience started to show. And this time there would be no lastball choke. As the black fell to earth the Hammers exploded and the look of relief on Paul’s face was there for all to see.

Wayne was crestfallen - such a cruel way for an excellent season to finish.

There were no such dramas in the Plate fi-

nal. Gaffers B were last season’s runners up and, from the first frame, they always looked like finishing second again.

For some reason, they were never in it. Dreamers A played well, but they didn’t have to get out of second gear.

Steve got the ball rolling in frame one as Harry missed a few pots he would normally make. Ditto, Mark A’s win over Troy.

Frame three was different. Mark T made the early running but couldn’t put the frame to bed. Ricky dug in and, with two shots, the frame was his … well it should have been!

A nice pot on the black earned a loud cheer, but the cue ball was still rolling, and it seemed to pick up pace as he made its way into the bottom pocket.

Gav took frame four and a whitewash genuinely looked on the cards. Gaffers’ heads were down, and a few started watching the football. Never a good sign!

Captain Ricky stopped the rot and put them on the board in frame five. But the joy was short-lived. The two Marks calmly took the next two and that seemed to be that.

Wilson kept the final alive with a solid win over Gav in frame eight to give Gaffers a glimmer. And the cheers rang loud when Nathan rolled in his last red against Steve.

He had a simple tap-in to make it 6-3 and get the Dreamers thinking.

Maybe it was the cheer that put him off? Maybe it was the ease of the task in hand?

Take your pick, but Nathan missed. It was a shocker, and Steve lapped up the gift.

It was a well-deserved, first piece of silverware for the Dreamers’ lads after many years in the league.

There was also one final league match on Tuesday. Division Two champions Crown B travelled to Rewind to take on Rewired and this was no dead rubber. The hosts needed a win to finish second.

Defeat would give the Silver to Picassos.

It would prove to be a tasty affair and the match had an “edge”.

And Rewind took the contest 8-4 to finish the season in second place.

The Crown lads were not best pleased. In fact, Zico has offered a 1,000-euro challenge to any member of Rewind Rewired to play him in a one-frame, winnertakes-all, shoot-out!

By Roscoe THIS was far easier than the scoreline suggests and, make no mistake, Tenerife are on a promotion charge. It’s nine unbeaten ahead of tough finish and, on this form, there could be another promotion party in Santa Cruz in a few weeks.

The man who masterminded the last La Liga campaign is next up, but more on that later.

This was a pleasing win in so many ways. It’s trendy these days for newspapers in the UK to compile “Five things we learned” after every match. I can follow a fashion…

1. Belief. This side have developed the swagger that all successful teams need. There is the smile if a chance goes begging because another is just around the corner. Midfielders are looking for the return pass. The defence know where their teammates will be. In the cross hairs. It’s great to see a side so together.

And that is down to…

2. Marti is going to be a top, top manager. The boss has been nothing short of a revelation.

Plucked from junior football and only given a chance because of injury to young star Jorge. The “stiffs” are all right 4. Nano. He is, in every way, the next Ayoze Perez. Eleven goals this season is a mighty return. In fact, he has eight in 2016. His goal on Sunday was a classic example of a kid learning his craft. He ghosted off the last defender and finished deftly past the advancing keeper.

He has a touch and a yard of pace. He is being closely watched but is taking it in his stride.

Nano will be giving the Cordoba defence a few sleepless nights this week 5. The fans are back.

Tenerife fans are oneeyed, fickle - and convinced the world is against them! But boy, can they get behind a team. The near 12,000 support against Albacete shows the potential this club has when things are going well.

They are the clichéd 12th man. Another result on Sunday will help push the crowd

to 13,000 for the Elche match. And then who knows? The graph is going up.

Take a quick glance at the table. It’s deceptive.

Technically, Tenerife are mid-table, but it’s only three points. The logjam will make that hard to bridge short-term, but over eight games the goal is simple. Seventeen more points has to be the aim. Five wins and two draws. Even 15 should be enough, providing the dropped points are not against rivals.

The three home games have to be won. Pure and simple. The away games are tougher. This weekend it’s Cordoba, who I have long since given up predicting. They are a bonkers team. Cordoba have lost their last six home matches, but are unbeaten in their last six away games! They have failed to score in just one game since Bonfire Night and have

three clean-sheets only in that time.

Position

Tenerife are looking for their first back-toback away wins in nearly 30 years. And if that weren’t enough, Tenerife have never won in 20 visits to Cordoba.

Thankfully games are not played by History teachers.

Cordoba are bossed

by Tenerife legend Jose Luis Oltra, who has been very complimentary this week. “Of course this is a very important game for me,” he said.

“Everyone knows how much I enjoyed my time there. This weekend we need to get a result.

We made the best first round (first half of the season) in the club’s history, and at that stage we were very solid.

“The second round is

difficult to explain and take. We have conceded a lot of goals and we have been vulnerable at home, which is not normal. Six consecutive defeats! That’s crazy.”

It’s not just Oltra in the old-boys’ club.

Goalie Razak Brimah is another Cordoba man who will have a CDT logo on his chest again one day. He said: “My son was born in Santa Cruz and I have many fond memories of Tenerife. This game is about a win.

“There are many points at stake over the last eight games, and in every game there is pressure. But we have long, winless run at home and we must win the three points.”

IT seems like only yesterday that the Oasis Fm Darts League season came to a close.

But such is our passion for the game that we

can’t wait to get cracking again!

And, all being well, the 2016/17 campaign will swing into action on Friday, 13th May.

Team registrations are still being taken, and, of course, we are always seeking to welcome new venues and teams into the fold.

For bar-owners, it is an excellent way to create a pleasant Friday-evening atmosphere, while putting your venue on the map - and tossing

Premier League preview

Only way is up, or down!

By Adi Benson WITH just a handful of games remaining, woeful Aston Villa already know their fate. The remaining teams at the top and bottom have a little longer to wait.

Aston Villa v Southampton So Villa were finally relegated last weekend, which came as no surprise to anyone - and their week got worse as directors quit the club, and so-called star players were caught in uncompromising positions. But at least they didn’t break Derby’s record of the lowest points ever scored by a club going down.

M a t h e m a t i c a l l y, Southampton could still finish fourth and pinch a Champions League place, but I think they will be happy with bettering their current seventh position after a slow start. Their defence is one of the best in the league and, with a few summer tweaks, they could do well next season.

Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-1 Bournemouth v Chelsea Bournemouth have

won much respect this season because many observers and experts predicted they would go down. They have overcome a few early-season injuries and some poor spells, managing to keep themselves clear of the relegation fight, for which Eddie Howe deserves plenty of praise.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have massively under-performed, costing Jose Mourinho his job. As champions, they were expected to mount a serious title challenge.

A summer of rebuilding at Stamford Bridge is on the cards, but how do you attract players without the incentive of European football?

Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A Liverpool v Newcastle Liverpool have hit a little form recently and will want to add more points to their tally to finish as high up the table as possible. But Klopp is experimenting with players because he has one eye on the Europe League, which could gain them a Champions League place.

Newcastle are still not out of danger, despite a recent win over Swansea and a midweek draw against Man City. They are now level on games with Norwich and just two points behind, with four games to play.

Benitez will enjoy his return to Anfield because the fans still like him,

but I’m not sure he will get any favours from the club.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 2-0 Man City v Stoke City, who know the league title is now beyond them, have a huge European semi-final against Real Madrid coming up, and they may rest a few players in readiness. They need to be careful, though, because defeat could jeopardise their top-four finish, and a few teams could still catch them.

Stoke, after their poor home display against Spurs, look to have settled on finishing in the top half of the table and are simply free-wheeling. But I’m sure Mark Hughes will have had a few harsh words with his team. What better way to come back than by beating City in their own backyard?

Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-1 Sunderland v Arsenal The Black Cats put in a battling, winning performance against

Norwich to draw closer to their relegation rivals, and it could end up being their biggest three points of the season. Their tails will be up and, with another stirring fighting performance, they might just ruffle a few Arsenal feathers.

With points dropped against Palace, Arsenal cannot afford any more slip-ups as the teams behind them start to circle in search of that precious fourth spot.

Some senior players have been critical of the team and manager this season, and we could just be seeing Wenger’s final season in charge.

Prediction: Draw Last season: 0-2 Leicester v Swansea He has been the darling of the press this season, but Jamie Vardy could well have damaged Leicester’s bid to become unlikely Premier League champions. For me, it wasn’t a dive - and had it not been for his reaction and abuse towards the ref, they might well have

had cause to appeal.

But a two-match Vardy ban could prove costly.

Swansea know they are safe and have nothing to play for except a higher finish. But they could still have a big say in the title race. They will have to play better than they did against Newcastle, though, if they want anything out of this game.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 2-0 Spurs v West Brom Everyone is talking about Spurs being the in-form team, but over the last 10 games they have matched exactly the same record as leaders Leicester. What makes them stand out, though, is the way they are winning games and the goals they are scoring. Throw in an easier run-in and it could now be their year!

West Brom have had a really disappointing season and look certain to finish in the bottom half. They showed early-season promise after bringing in some good signings. But they never really hit any form and have, basically, done enough to stay up.

Prediction: Home win Last season: 0-1 FA CUP SEMI-FINALS Everton v Man Utd Everton have not had the season for which they hoped, and pressure is mounting on manager Roberto Martinez. A triumph against

Man Utd could certainly ease that worry a little, but they will have to be at the top of their game.

They have a few worries, with injuries in defence, and the pack will have to be shuffled.

United will be anxious to win the cup after not being at their best in the league. It has been a while since they lifted the FA Cup, and a win would certainly appease a section of their supporters. I’m not sure it would change their minds about Van Gaal, though, with most still wanting a managerial change.

Prediction: Away win Crystal Palace v Watford Palace started the season well, but since the festive period they have struggled to get league results.

Fortunately, they have not been the same in the cup and they will relish a trip to Wembley, hoping they can return there for the Final itself.

Watford have had a similar season, but the FA Cup games have offered a good distraction for them. They will be banking on Deeney and Ighalo to get back among the goals.

Interestingly, neither of these teams have lifted the trophy, but they’ve both been losing finalists: Watford in 1983 against Everton and Palace in 1990, beaten

by Man Utd. Prediction: Away win

Oasis Fm Fantasy League

The Elk is on a charge!

WE are close to bringing down the final curtain on this season’s Fantasy League - and it’s not as cut-and-dried as it appeared to be a few weeks ago.

That’s because one or two new managers have started moving through the table in recent games, and we could be in for an extremely tight finish.

There were some catch-up games this

week, which meant some players were getting a chance of doublepoint-scoring.

This is reflected in the point-scoring team of the week because it is dominated by players from the clubs who played twice.

Leading the way, with two players featured, were Man Utd, Newcastle, Liverpool and West Ham, the other players coming from Watford, Spurs and Man City.

Highest point-scoring player of the week was Sergio Aguero (26).

We had some top-table

movement this week not actually in the top three but a step below - as Goldpack, managed by Matthew Potts, moved into fourth spot, while Oasis Fm’s Chris Elkington took fifth place with his team, The Elkaholics.

And to keep the Oasis Fm ball rolling, Roscoe is also back in the Top 10!

Frank Devany still leads the way, but the chasing pack is closing in, just 108 points now separating the top five.

It is certainly not an insurmountable lead now,

and Frank should be looking over his shoulder.

Team of the week were The Elkaholics, who scored a massive 129 points - hence their climb into the top five.

Chris used the available boosts well as he played a triple-point-scoring captain. Luckily for him, it was Sergio Aguero (78), and he also had to thank Alli (15) and Kane (13). Had the rest of his team performed as well, it could have been a better total. But his other eight players managed just 23 points

between them.

Most teams have just four games left to play

but some have five, so it may be time for some clever transfers!
