Usual suspects line up again Continued from Front This week, King Felipe VI met with all the major political leaders in a last-gasp attempt to get somebody to form a working Government. Most Brits will find it astonishing that there is still no Prime Minister, government or cabinet in Spain. But the 20th December General Election caused the doomsday scenario many people had feared. In the UK and America, there is a first-pastthe-post system. And that is also the case in Spain. But whereas the UK and America each have a two-party system (on the whole), Spain’s political landscape has been smashed into a mil-
lion pieces. The days of a choice between the Conservative Popular Party or the Labour-like PSOE are long gone. Podemos and Ciudadanos, new kids on the block, have splintered the vote and caused political chaos. Under Spanish law, a new government had to be formed before 2nd May or the King would, legally, have to call another Election. And this will be rubber-stamped
on Tuesday. The new General Election will be held on 26th June, and the big worry is that nothing will change! King Felipe spent two days this week meeting the party leaders, only to find himself back at square one. None of the parties could reach a deal or form a coalition. There are 350 seats in the lower house of Parliament and, to gain control, they need to have at least 176. At
Christmas, acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy led his Popular Party to a technical win, but the 122-seat total was miles away from being good enough. The PSOE did even worse, while the two new parties flexed their muscles. The upstarts went from a protest vote to a genuine voice for angry Spaniards, sick and tired of high unemployment and endless corruption cases. This, coupled with essential austerity cuts, budget-saving in the national health care service and belt-tightening in public education, saw the outsiders move into the mainstream. Rajoy looked a dead duck after the election.
RUNNERS AND RIDERS
Mariano Rajoy - Popular Party This is the last-chance saloon for a man who has actually done a sound job. Brave enough to make unpopular but necessary decisions, he will use the economy as a big voting tool this time. Will also point to the squabbling between the other parties. His strong stance on
not backing down during the last four months and simply saying “we won” has angered the others, but shows strength. Popular in his party, but must make use of his deputy, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, who many see as Prime Minister-inwaiting. Pedro Sanchez - PSOE The Socialist leader has a real image problem. His party is popular locally, but the same voters do not trust him nationally. He has failed to find any credible theories on how he would
run the economy differently from Rajoy.
His failure to back down on a deal with the PP angered the public. Had he allowed Rajoy to stay in charge, Spain would have had this sorted out months ago. Sanchez also failed to do deals with Ciudadanos and Podemos. A
master negotiator he isn’t, and the public have noted this. Hard to see how this will change in seven weeks. Pablo Iglesias - Podemos The pony-tailed lecturer in politics is running out of steam. He campaigned on being the party for change,
Sure, he had “won”, but with too few seats. His first idea was to form a coalition with the PSOE, but its leader would enter talks only if Rajoy stood down. And he was not going to do that. Despite falling short of the seats required, he had done okay as Prime Minister. The economy is growing and he remains popular - inside his party, at least. The inability of the three other parties to do a deal (Podemos and Ciudadanos hate each other even more than the POSE and PP do) has given Rajoy a second chance. The latest opinion polls show that his PP would do better in a re-run. They also show that the
but when he had the chance to do so, he baulked. The Podemos message as the anti-austerity party gets him only so far, and the last four months have seen the economy improving again. He was also hurt when Podemos told Pedro Sanchez that any coalition had to support a referendum on independence in Catalonia. It did not go down well. Albert Rivera - Ciudadanos Rivera has fared best of the leaders since the election. The young Ciudadanos leader has
PSOE would do even worse - if that is even possible - while support for the new boys appears to be drying up. The question is, how close would Rajoy get? Most experts predict he will get more than his original 122 seats in December, but he would need over 145 in reality if he wanted to do a deal with Ciudadanos. This is the first repeat election in Spain since democracy was restored in 1978, and the big concern is that the political impasse could stretch to September. The public have had enough, as polls have suggested. But should the new election throw up similar figures, there is no alternative!
showed maturity and a degree of panache during negotiations. His hatred of Podemos and its leader, Iglesias, could be a trump card in June. He looks a statesman and it would be no surprise if Ciudadanos bettered their last Election figures. To use a boxing term, Rivera could be the gatekeeper to power for Rajoy.

‘TOURISM IS PEACE TOOL’ ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, speaking at the International Tourism Forum in Arona on Monday, told his audience that he viewed tourism as “a potent tool for local development and peace.”
He added: “In confronting death and terrorism, tourism can bring life … it is people reconnecting. It is our opportunity, as human beings, to promote peace. “There’s an economic side, too, but a place cannot be a tourist destination, or cannot strive to be one, without a welcoming atmosphere, without security, etc. So tourism has a value in the peaceful development of different places.” The event was organised by the Tribuna Fórum, and the title of his address (translated) was: “Tourism as a key part of inter-population relations.” Adeje’s Mayor spoke of his firm belief that “tourism is a hugelyimportant tool in the improvement of society and people. “And here in the South it has been a blessing, bringing with it the need for co-ordination
and co-operation. The South (of Tenerife) is an important contributor to the wealth of the Canary Islands, and we cannot allow that to be a onesided relationship. “We all need to accept our responsibilities and come together to show other institutions the best way forward while, of course, always respecting the individuality of each borough, because that is where the richness lies. “And it’s all under the umbrella of the Canary Islands and Spain, who have helped create our
position (in the world of tourism).” Given that tourism is the economic motor of the islands, Fraga based his intervention on calling for co-ordination of the different Canarian boroughs “to advance and promote ourselves”. He also restated his firm conviction that “tourism won’t benefit us if we don’t take into account the well-being of the people who live here. “This is very important, a key factor, and ethical,” he said. “Furthermore, it is another
Economy looks rosy, says Trade Minister
PEDRO Ortega, the Spanish Government’s Economy, Industry and Trade Minister, says the Canarian economy is the best-placed in the country, and he anticipates growth to be “remarkably high” by the end of the year. Ortega said it was clear that a certain restlessness existed after Economy Minister Luis
de Guindos lowered the growth forecast. In Madrid, the unemployment rate is 17%, and it is 28% in the Canaries, but this hasn’t put off Ortega’s positive spin. The Minister stressed the great performance of the tourism sector and said that, as domestic demand recovers, general sales have risen.
He adds that the number of people paying into the Social Security systems is higher, while unemployment is falling. Ortega “expects” to see a sharp reduction in the unemployment figures in the groups of women and youth, and insists the economic model of “brick, sun and beach” is obsolete.
way of improving the destination. “If those who live and work here are valued, they in turn treat visi-
tors in a better way. The discussion about tourism is well-laid-out, but at times is very financially-centred, and we need to reorient the discussion - make it more humanist.” Mayor Fraga cited Adeje as an example, “as a tiny metaphor for how tourism has contributed to a better distribution of wealth, evolving from a primarily agricultural society, where ownership of the land was in the hands of the few, to a modern developed society where everyone has the opportunity to grow”. He also said: “The current global positioning of Costa Adeje would not have been possible without the collaboration and support of the business sector, and the decisions made by this local administration and training of workers, etc. “This whole process has seen a radi-
cal change in our society in just 20 years, and our people have also seen the bigger picture. They have been to the fore in adapting to change in the 21st century, taking on board globalisation, new technologies, etc.” Fraga also took the participants through recent integration campaigns, developed in Adeje Town Hall, that have been operating in the borough. They range from “Adeje nuestro pueblo/ Adeje our town”, reinforcing belonging and pride; “Adeje vive Adeje convive/Adeje live and let live”, to the current, ongoing “Adeje, convivencia 10/Adeje, harmonious coexistence 10/10” campaign, in which its Council is promoting mutual understanding among the different cultures that are part of Adeje as an opportunity for human development.
Plug is pulled on Alan Parsons gig THE eagerlyawaited Alan Parsons Project concert in Las Americas was cancelled at the very last minute.
The one-off gig, at the Pirámid of Arona last Friday, had sold nearly 1,000 tickets, and many people were furious at the late, late cancellation. Some had even handed over their tickets and were relaxing in the bar before the announcement. There were numerous rumours about what caused the problem, and Canarian Weekly spoke with Maria Jesus Leon, Press Officer for promoters Legends Live, who told us: “The
reasons for cancellation were a mix of two reasons. “Firstly, we realised there was a big crack on the false ceiling by the stage. This is the part which is, essentially, the plaster that covers the ceiling. “Above this false ceiling, there is a framework of cables. Those cables provide the electrical current for the room. At the same time, we realised that there was no current coming into the sound desk. Suddenly, some pieces of plaster started to fall down around the front row, and the first line of the seating area. Given the facts, we decided to call in an engineer to determine whether the show could proceed. “He made the decision on safety grounds
that, until the damage could be fixed, the venue must remain closed. The Pirámide de Arona was closed all weekend. Even the Carmen Mota show was cancelled. “We will refund all ticket money, of course. Those who booked through ticketbell.com will receive an email and communication about how and when they will get their money back. The refunding process is underway. “But we can confirm that our next gig, with Jethro Tull, will take place on 20th May as planned.” Alan Parsons put out a statement expressing his disappointment, but it wasn’t a busted flush for the band. They played Lanzarote last Saturday, as planned.

Starmus tributes pile up for Prof Hawkins THE third Starmus Festival is just around the corner, and more details are being released. We already know this year’s event will honour Professor Stephen Hawking, and it has now been revealed that there will be a musical tribute.
Garik Israelian, Starmus organiser and founder, is making a major effort to bring together top-level speakers in the scientific field, along with musicians and artistic performances to inspire the beauty of the universe and the stars. “We know Professor Hawking is a great lover of music and, to
celebrate this new edition of Starmus, we have made a thoughtful selection of surprise guests and musical performances, aimed to be a tribute to the Professor.” An artistic “Warped Side of the Universe” contribution will come from Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer, who won the gold statue for his work in the The Lion King film. Zimmer, who has been Oscar-nominated 10 more times, will be joined by Paul Franklin, winner of two Oscars for Best Special Effects for Inception (2010) and Interestellar (2014). The two men will create a multi-media platform to involve the audience in the sensations that produce gravitational waves, colliding black holes, explosions of superno-
vas and the birth of our universe. These effects will all be experienced through music, videos, computer simulations, poetry and prose. Sarah Brightman, so-
It’s Excellence supreme here!
THE Alliance for Tourism Excellence (Exceltur) has revealed the full extent of the tourism boost as a result of ongoing problems in North Africa. It has confirmed that around 800,000 tourists have come to the Canary Islands instead of using planned trips to destinations such as Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia. Exceltur Executive Vice President Jose Luis Zoreda told a press conference: “Tourism has established itself as
an engine of the national economy. We have seen accelerating growth in the first quarter, which raises the confidence to maximum levels. We expect record highs.” Tourism grew again in the first quarter of the year, making it “ten consecutive quarters of increases,” said Zoreda. “This time it was over 3% year-on-year, and our sector is leading the recovery of the entire Spanish economy.” This has been possible through a sharp
increase in foreign demand, at a rate much higher than anticipated following terrorist attacks in Turkey and Egypt, along with the perceived insecurity in some European urban destinations following the Paris and Brussels terrorist attacks. For 2016, Exceltur expects growth above initial expectations because of geopolitical instability, which will affect competing destinations such as the Eastern Mediterranean.

Starmus. And I look forward to performing with the acclaimed Tenerife Symphony Orchestra.”

Canaries tops for enticing workers TOUGH, economic times always lead to migration as people travel to find work. And, it seems, the Canary Islands are proving a popular destination for those from the mainland. In 2015, two of every 10 work contracts signed in the archipelago represented a change of residence. The Report on Labour Migration, prepared by the Canario Employment Observatory (Obecan) and the Canary Foundation for the Promotion of Labour (Funcatra), reveals that the vast majority of these movements corresponded to foreigners who settled in the Islands. Almost 15% of total contracts were signed by foreigners, while the main islands are the top destination of Canarians, who move to take up a job. However, Gran Canaria seems to attract more attention from workers compared with Tenerife. Officially 26,961 people in 2015 took the plunge
to live in the Canary Islands from other regions. And 11,385 Canarians swapped islands in search of work. The Obecan and Funcatra data enables us to see some changes in the migration between islands, with regard to the times before the crisis. In 2007, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro alone had negative balances. This means that more people left to find work rather than stayed. In 2015, all islands had more people arrive than leave. Also, the average age of those getting a new work contract has increased, and there are now more women than men securing new work deals. Most of these new contracts, unsurprisingly, are in the hospitality and trade sectors. Of those who “flew south for work”, three of every four contracts went to citizens from five regions: Andalusia the majority, with about 30% of the total, plus Madrid, Galicia, Catalonia and Valencia.

Rental housing is fraction cheaper
THE rental cost of housing has fallen in the Canaries. The average price, officially, was 0.1% lower in March, according to the latest data of Fotocasa, the Real Estate Index.
Overall, the average price of rentals in Spain rose 3.1% in the first quarter, which put the price at 7.24 euros per square metre, per month.
The Fotocasa survey said that this quarterly increase continued with the 2015 trend, when rental prices began to increase after eight years of widespread falls. Beatriz Toribio, Fotocasa’s head of studies, said: “The rental market has experienced a strong momentum in recent years, and that is moving prices. “According to recent Fotocasa studies, 60% of home-owners who last year rented a house did not have to lower the price to the
initial offer for lease. And 90% found a tenant in less than six months.” Since prices peaked in May 2007 (10.12 euros per square metre per month) the price of housing has accumulated a 28.5% fall. Five regions recorded falls of over 30% from the maximum price they reached five years ago. Thus, Aragon has seen the rental price drop most, by 40%, followed by Castilla-La Mancha (-35.6%), Cantabria (-35.3%) and Valencia (-31.9%).
a-billion euros last year. It also used over 100 Canarian suppliers, and its bill came to just over 466m euros. The chain closed the year with 81 supermarkets in Gran Canaria, Te n e r i f e ,
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and a total staff count on the islands of 4,096 employees. Nationally, the chain has also had a fine year. The parent company paid out 277m euros in bonuses to its staff in Spain for achieving targets, 15
million of which went to workers in its Canarian supermarkets. Also, its Canaries’ stores last year donated more than 170 ton of food to food banks in Santa Cruz and Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.
Tourism’s sunny outlook LAST year proved excellent, and it looks as though 2016 will be another amazing 12 months for Tenerife tourism.
The 2015 period was full of outstanding results for the Island, both in visitor numbers and tourism spending. And, based on current data and forecasts for this summer, this year could be head and shoulders above that mark. Expert forecasts for the summer months are eye-catching, suggesting that Tenerife will be the market leader. Estimates by the Cabildo’s Tenerife Tourism Department, show that the Island’s two airports will welcome about four million passengers - a 20% improvement on last year’s summer months. For infrastructure, said Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabé, the growth rate is simi-
lar, with an estimated three million travellers to Tenerife South and one million passengers for Tenerife North. The summer season will see over 50 airlines flying more than 150 routes, and a delighted Bernabe said: “We are looking at some very positive data. We had similar growth during the winter, and it could be said that 2016 will be a record year.” Data from Tenerife Tourism shows that all markets are growing during the summer months. Airline seats offered from the UK have increased 25%, which, says Barnabas, is “particularly spectacular”. In addition, the mainland market is up more than 20%. And other countries such as Belgium, which increased 25% and the Czech Republic, up 80%, are showing real growth. Even the Russian market is looking better. The Russian tourist bubble burst a
couple of years ago, but early 2016 bookings are higher than in 2015. One of the markets in which the Tourism team have worked hard is the German sector. And it seems to have paid off. There have been a number of big campaigns and flesh-pressing, and 2016 summer bookings are up so much that the German market will account for more than 20% of all arrivals. “Since tourist figures from this country decreased slightly during the past year, we made an action plan,” said Bernabe. “After some concerns, we have seen a real evolution this year, and it looks like we have not only recovered but gone past where we wanted to be!” When asked what country would be next on the “hit list”, the minister said: “We are premièring different routes, among which are the new connections to Bulgaria.”

but not on our island...

THE DADDY OF ALL LIES THERE is a great quote in the movie JFK. The character, Bill Brousard, is struggling to come to terms with the findings from Jim Garrison and his team. All the evidence points to Lee Harvey Oswald not being the assassin. In a moment of frustration he goes: “This is Louisiana, chief! I mean, how do you know who your daddy is? Because your mama told you so!” I’ve thought of this a lot this week. Mainly because I’m reading the excellent Not in your Lifetime, by Anthony Summers. It’s the latest version of a brilliant book, which has been rewritten and updated over the last 40 years. If you are fascinated by the death of JFK, it’s an absolute must-read. For me, the whole story is not about who pulled the trigger or from where (there was no way there was just one gunman, and I’m pretty sure Oswald wasn’t one of them). No, for me it’s about trust. How did the American Government or “the machine” get away with all the lies? The cover-ups? The destroying of reputations? Can it really be so hard to treat us like adults? So many documents, files and photos on that fateful murder in No-
vember 1963 remain redacted, or filed away under the “National Security” umbrella. It has been 53 years, and most of those involved are dead. They are certainly not in power and, more importantly, it’s not changing anything today. Whatever is being withheld must be dynamite. There can be no other explanation. It’s the reason why, for 27 years, the South Yorkshire police force lied, lied, lied and lied again about what happened that fatal April afternoon in 1989 at Hillsborough. We now know the truth: they messed up! They ordered the gates to be opened. If they had admitted that on Day One, they would have spared nearly three decades of heartache for Liverpudlians. It makes you seriously wonder what else the British police got up to in the Seventies and Eighties. How many more lies? The miners have always told a different story. Speak to Irish people who lived in the UK during those times. Why should we now believe anything they said in those dark days? A society is only as safe and strong as its weakest link. If we cannot trust those we pay to protect us…

SPAIN’S holidaymakers may this year be asked to pay a new “ecotax” in a bid to conserve some of the country’s most popular islands. And residents will be hit as well.
This “green tax” is currently being prepared by government chiefs in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza as part of a drive to protect the strained Balearic ecosystem. After 1st July, visitors and UK residents living on the islands will be asked to pay a daily
fee of around two euros (around £1.50) per person, depending on season, type of accommodation and the individual’s age. The tax, first announced last year, has been criticised by travel agencies and consumer watchdogs, who say the added fee could make a significant difference to families planning holidays on a tight budget this summer. Fred Isaac, of the Consumer Action website, said: “This will hurt families the most, and they already face inflated prices during school holidays.” Authorities say the tax will
go towards natural heritage, however, as well as investing money towards protecting the area, which receives more than three million British tourists every year. Last year Biel Barcelo, vice-president of the islands’ coalition government, said the tax will be applied “with or without the help of the Spanish state”, since it is “absolutely necessary” to conserve the Balearic archipelago. The initial proposals were received badly last year, but plans have now been made for the cost to halve after the ninth
day of each stay. But it still means a family of four, with children over the age of 16, will pay up to £70 extra. In Malta, a charge of 40p per night comes into place from June, but will be capped at five Euros. Travel operator ABTA said it “had concerns” about the tax, adding it could: ‘have the unintended consequence of driving tourists away from the islands.” A spokesperson said: “Safeguarding the environment of the islands has to be a high priority but this tax is not the most sensible way to fund these efforts.”
Brakes on for danger curve THE infamous El Sauzal curve, a segment of road in north-west Tenerife, features the Island’s highest annual accident rate, with 82 last year - one death and 42 people hospitalised. And, it seems, the problem curve is causing more and more accidents because the number has risen
steadily since 2013. The Cabildo and the DGT traffic authority, well aware of the statistics, this week tabled various measures to reduce the danger. Their suggestions include reducing speed with a radar section on the stretch. They could also modify the part which links to the North Motorway (TF-
5) through a tunnel. From next week, as a short-term measure, a new speed limit will be imposed, the current 100km/h dropping to 80km/h. And, in addition, halfa-mile before the most contentious point, the limit will be reduced from the motorway standard of 120km/h to 100km/h.
This move will be complemented by placing information boards and increased Guardia Civil traffic controls. In the long-term, there are plans to expand the section to six lanes, including one for buses. They also feature a tunnel being built to eliminate the dangerously-sharp curve.

The one-punch man held after fellow-Brit dies ROBERT Gray, believed to be a former British boxer, has been held by police on the Costa Blanca after admitting he caused the death of a fellow Brit, unintentionally, with one punch.
Terrance Wilmot, 42, died after his neck struck the ground when he fell after the incident, following their drinking session in a Javea bar in the tourist resort of south-east Spain on Sunday evening. He is understood to have broken his neck, and 45-year-old Gray was arrested after handing himself in to the Guardia Civil. Local media reported that the two men, who knew each other, had been drinking with some other people. Witnesses said Wilmot kept provoking Gray, who remained calm and
ignored the so-called insults. But when he left the bar with his girlfriend, they said Wilmot followed and again attacked the former boxer verbally. Gray then punched him once. Wilmot went into convulsions and died about an hour later, despite revival efforts by an ambulance crew. The incident was recorded on a nearby security video camera. Gray went to Javier’s Guardia Civil barracks after officers spoke with his girlfriend and persuaded her to telephone him. He told police he had punched Wilmot out of frustration, but had no intention of inflicting grievous harm. A Guardia Civil spokesman said: “The pair were known to each other and had been drinking in a pub with a group of people.” Gray was expected to appear in court this week to face possible manslaughter charges.
SANTA Cruz city is looking cleaner, and a new project to remove rats is in full swing, with the Town Hall spending more than 20,000 euros on 150 rodent rings.
This pilot scheme, launched in January, has already seen the installation of 60 of these giant rings attached to the trunks of large trees. They have been placed all over the town, but especially on the Canary palms in the Francisco La Roche avenue, where the owners of terrace houses are especially grateful for this campaign. Tres de Mayo, Plaza de Los Patos and the Sanabria park have also been protected. The installation of these brown-coloured, brass rings, between 90cm and one metre in diameter, prevents rats from climbing to the tops of the trees to find food, or nesting at these points. Carlos Correa, the Municipal Corporation’s Environment Councilman, said: “These rings also avoid visual impact, and are

virtually invisible to the naked eye.” The rings are anchored to trees using 2cm screws, which do not damage the trunks. It is a quick process, in which municipal technicians take no more than 15 minutes to place each ring. It enables them to site between 30-50 of these contraptions daily to combat rat colonies. Over the coming months, municipal technicians will install these new rings in areas such as the neighbour-
hoods of Añaza, Santa Maria del Mar and El Chapatal. The Town Hall hopes to increase considerably, in stages, the number of rings to be
installed in the coming years. All this is accompanied by campaigns focusing on pest control and dis-infestation of Santa Cruz taking place throughout the city.

Mobile-phones? Motorists as bad as drink-drivers
THE Canaries’ Tourism Department (Turismo de Canarias) has seen its new “incentive” plan bear fruit.
The new, financial sweeteners have seen four new routes joining the Canarian network, linking Tenerife with Bucharest (Romania), Lanzarote with Budapest (Hungary) and both islands with Katowice (Poland). Hungarian airline Wizz Air will fly the routes from next winter, and they will all be operated on a weekly basis, except for the KatowiceTenerife South link, which will feature two weekly flights. Maria Teresa Lorenzo,
the Canary Government’s Tourism Minister, said in a statement that the launch was the first step to opening a new market, Romania, “which has great future potential”. And Poland and Hungary are seen as two emerging markets in terms of visitors. Lorenzo also said Poland and Hungary were the latest target markets incorporated into the marketing strategy of the Canary Islands’ brand. Next winter’s additional routes will generate an increased air capacity of nearly 50,000 seats - annual arrival figures that will help expand further the presence and market share of the Canary Islands in the Eastern Europe countries.
Classic case of car-thefts DOES your blood boil when you see a motorist holding a mobilephone conversation while driving along? You’re not the only one!
Almost two-thirds of motorists have seen at least one driver using a mobile phone while driving, according to an RAC survey. And the problem is getting worse. The survey, involving 2,120 motorists being
questioned in the UK, suggests the problem of using phones illegally while driving has grown worse. And not just in Britain. Many of you will surely have spotted some Tenerife drivers cradling a mobile to an ear as they zoom past. One chap was even seen texting a message on his mobile recently as he poodled along downhill on a winding road! Some 6% of those polled reported seeing between five and seven drivers breaking the law.
And only 26% reported seeing no wrong-doing. A RAC spokesman said: “Thirteen years after the introduction of the current law forbidding use of a hand-held phone at the wheel of a vehicle, this behaviour is far from being stamped out. “In fact, the results of our research suggests the problem has got worse rather than better. “Using a hand-held phone should be regarded as being as socially unacceptable as drinking and driving.”
The UK Government is currently examining responses to a consultation earlier this year, which proposed tougher penalties for drivers breaking this law. And MPs are considering raising the number of penalty points for those caught from three to four. Fines may also be increased by 50%, to £150. The use of a mobile phone was a contributing factor in 21 fatal accidents in 2014, according to Department for Transport statistics for Britain.
Waste-dump scheme IS given the green light A GR E E M E N T has finally been reached over a controversial waste-dumping ocean programme in North Tenerife.
Santa Cruz Council has this week been given the green light to resume the dumping of
treated sewage into the sea. An arrangement with the Canary Islands Government means pre-treated waste water will be pumped into the sea from the Los Llanos resort, with a daily limit of 20,000 cubic metres. It heralds the end of a long stand-off between the Town Hall and the local Government.
Back in 2005, the Council was granted legal rights to dump, but the process was blocked repeatedly by the local government. Emmasa, the Santa Cruz water company, was charged with devising a viable project, and it responded with a pumping station at Los Llanos. Santa Cruz Mayor
José Manuel Bermúdez said: “For a long time, we have been working for authorisation to fit the current reality of the facility and what, right now, is needed.” The first phase of the pumping scheme will see an 807,988-euro investment to ensure the pre-treatment and pumping stations in Llanos meet all the required standards.”
THERE has been a rise in thefts of classic cars in Tenerife over the last few years, but the National Police this week made a vital arrest.
They have confirmed the arrest of a 50-yearold man, of Spanish nationality, on suspicion of stealing three classic cars worth more than 150,000 euros. He will also be charged with the theft of numerous spare parts to restore vehicles. The National Police said in a press
release that events began in 2014 when the complainant, who was a friend of the detainee, wanted to withdraw his vehicles from the man’s property, which he used as a garage for his cars. The unnamed man refused to return them. After nearly two years, La Laguna police finally had the paperwork to search the accused’s property. The recovered vehicles are a classic Volkswagen T1 Samba Deluxe van from 1959, worth about 130,000 euros, a Mercedes 230E and a pickup type van, said to be a classic Volkswagen, valued at 20,000 euros.

Nigerian woman saved from El Fraile sex den IN a saga becoming more and more common, police have rescued two women who were trapped in a sex den, one of them in El Fraile, here in the south.
This week the National Police released the women - one a Nigerian and the other from Sierra Leone - both victims of human trafficking for sexual exploitation. The first woman was rescued in El Fraile and the second, it can now be reported, months later, in Madrid’s Alcala de Henares area. Police researchers have discovered that they were part of a web of sex cells in the country. Police detained and remanded seven people, five in Tenerife and two in Alcala de Henares. And, according to police records, they found 3,382 euros, airline tickets, mobile phones, money-transfer documents and evidence of voodoo rituals. Their investigations revealed that the Tenerife victim was captured in Nigeria, where the organisation, also made up of Nigerians, offered her a job in Spain. However, just before departure, she was informed that she had to repay a 50,000-euro
debt, and was then subjected to a voodoo ritual to ensure payment. She was taken against her will and flown from Nigeria to Casablanca, in Morocco. Then she was off to Valencia before a flight here. Her captors told her she would be arrested and deported if she alerted the authorities. On arrival in Tenerife, the gang’s contacts were waiting for her. She was locked in a house in El Fraile and sexually exploited for long hours. She was ordered to “please” in the hope that she would attract more customers and more sex, and accumulate swift “earning” fees that would settle the so-called debt. The woman was set a daily cash target, and her captors would threaten her and attack her if she did not get the sum requested. The investigation allowed agents to find out that until the moment of her release, the victim had paid the gang more than 30,000 euros. The rescue operation was carried out by the Central Brigade of Human Trafficking of the General Commissariat for Immigration; Unity against criminal networks and falsehood (UCRIF) of Tenerife, and the UPR of the Southern Tenerife Commissariat.
Two Spaniards dead in Cape Verde gun spree TWO Spanish citizens, aged 31 and 51 years, died on Tuesday during a gun attack on a Cape Verde military barracks, which left a total of 11 people dead.
A man is understood to have entered the barracks’ headquarters, firing shots which killed eight soldiers, a civilian Cape Verdean and the two Spanish workers, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry. It also confirmed that another Spanish citizen escaped unharmed. The dead Spaniards, both telecommunications technicians and
civilians, have been identified and their relatives informed. But their identities have not been disclosed to the public. The Cape Verde Government confirmed that it was not a terrorist attack, and nor was the event linked to drug-trafficking. Paulo Rocha, Cape Verde Internal Administration Minister, said the reason for the shootings was not immediately clear. The attack took place on the island of Santiago, the main tourist area of Cape Verde, which is a former Portuguese colony of about 500,000 inhabitants, about 1,600km from Tenerife.

Buyers snub a villa Prince once owned A VILLA near Marbella, worth more than five million euros and once owned by legendary singer Prince, is still unsold after being on the market for two years.
It overlooks the Mediterranean and has an outdoor jacuzzi, plus three upstairs bedroom suites with marble bathrooms. It also boasts a colonial-style, double staircase with white-marbled balustrades sweeping down to a chandeliered entrance hall. The late pop icon, who bought the villa in 1998 as a wedding gift for his then wife, dancer Mayte Garcia, sold it in 2006. Nightclub owner Olivia Valere, who knew Prince in the Nineties, when he was on holi-
day in Marbella and played music at his club, said: “The house is very glam, very luxurious, but also very flashy. It’s a bit outdated in that sense, and the location isn’t perfect, either.” Valere added: “I don’t think he was well advised on that deal - it’s not for the jet set.” The villa lies just west of Marbella in the hills of El Paraiso, a wealthy,
residential area, steeped in millionaires and enjoying views of the mountains and a Gary Player-designed golf course. Prince, who was behind hits such as Purple Rain and Sign o’ the Times died suddenly last week. “The fact that it once belonged to Prince undoubtedly adds to the value of the house,” said estate agents Engel & Volkers
in an e-mailed statement. “The house is very special. It’s a type of construction and decoration that is not to everyone’s taste, but the owner is in no rush to sell, and the price isn’t negotiable.” No expense was spared in building Prince’s former home, set in 6,000sq/m of landscaped gardens, bordered by cypress trees and a boundary wall for maximum privacy. It has been on the market so long might have more to do with investors’ tastes for more contemporarystyle homes, said Dario Fernandez, a director at Marbella-based real estate broker Prime Invest. “That Prince owned it once upon a time won’t give it any cachet or help sell,” he said. “The other problem is that it’s not in a prime area.”
Crane refloats sinking yacht IT takes a few factors to sink, or nearly sink, a vessel in a marina. And this week, a luxury yacht nearly went down in Puerto Colón. “La Favorita” had to be re-floated by a crane in that enclave of Costa Adeje’s tourist area after getting into trouble on Tuesday. For some unexplained reason, she started taking in lots of water in the stern. The yacht, 21 metres long and valued at more than two
million euros, belongs to a Russian businessman, who owns more vessels in the South of Tenerife. Adeje local police, national police, coastguards and fire-fighters all helped saved the yacht. Only the part closest to the bow deck remained afloat at first, and a large crane was needed to help re-float “La Favorita”. Nobody was seriously injured.
Overseas buyers make their mark FOREIGN citizens bought 28.1% of all homes sold in 2015 in the Canary Islands, according to the Association of Registrars. In addition, they were responsible for the seventh consecutive year of growth, with last year’s number 4.2% higher than in 2014. By region, their
purchase figure was highest in the Balearics (35.6%), followed by Canary Islands (28.1%) and Valencia (26.4%). Of these buyers, 62% were EU citizens, which is a record high total. And 16% of transactions were for properties valued above 500,000 euros.

White House 9/11 secrets of Saudis to be exposed? THE Obama administration is said to be considering releasing part of a secret chapter from a congressional inquiry concerning the 9/11 terror attacks.
The documents, which contain possible Saudi connections to the hijackers, are kept in a secure room under the Capital.
It is thought they also hold information into “specific sources of foreign support for some of the 9/11 hijackers while they were in the United States”. Former senator Bob Graham, then chairman of the bipartisan panel, believes the 28-
Boozy plane travellers brought down to earth TWO allegedly drunken passengers, who also became “disruptive” on an easyJet flight to Tenerife, forced the captain to turn the plane around in mid-flight and return to Gatwick.
The captain deemed their behaviour so “rowdy” that he turned back. Sussex Police were called 45 minutes into a 7.15am flight following reports that two men, aged 26 and 27, from Portsmouth, were causing an almighty disturbance in the air. When the plane landed at Gatwick, one of the men was said to have pushed past the captain and walked towards the aeroplane door, where he was met by policemen. An officer was then assaulted by the 26-year-old, allegedly. Both men were arrested and cautioned. The other 143 passengers disembarked and had their baggage removed while security screened the aircraft. After three hours, all passengers climbed back on board and were given a complimentary refreshment service throughout the fourhour flight. The 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk on an aircraft, assaulting an officer in the execution of his duty, using
threatening abusive words or behaviour and endangering an aircraft. The 27-year-old was accused on two counts of using threatening abusive words or behaviour and endangering an aircraft. Both men have since been bailed until 2nd June while investigations continue. Following the incident, some of the passengers tweeted praise for the way the cabin crew dealt with the situation. One woman, named Gemma Mudie, said: “Huge respect and praise to the easyJet staff on our plane to Tenerife from Gatwick. We had to turn back due to abusive passengers. “Staff did an amazing job in keeping us safe until they were arrested. Well done. Hopefully, we’re on the runway soon.” An easyJet spokesperson said: “While such incidents are rare, we take them very seriously and do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour on-board. The behaviour of these passengers was unacceptable, and we will fully co-operate with police in order push for prosecution. “EasyJet’s cabin crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations, and to act quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers is not compromised at any time. That is our priority at all times.”
page chapter points suspicion at Saudi Arabia. And, according to him, an administration official told him that intelligence officials would decide in the next few weeks whether to release parts of the documents. But such a move could strain already-difficult relations between the two countries. “I hope that decision is to honour the American people and make it available,” Graham told NBC’s Meet The Press. “The most important
unanswered question of 9/11 is: did these 19 people conduct this very sophisticated plot alone, or were they supported?” Tim Roemer, a member of the inquiry and the 9/11 Commission, said: “There were clues. There were allegations. There were witness reports. “There was evidence about the hijackers, about people they met with - all kinds of different things the 9/11 Commission was then tasked with reviewing and investigating.”
Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudi citizens, but the Saudi government says it has been “wrongfully and morbidly accused of complicity” in the attacks. But it also says it would welcome declassification of the 28 pages so it could “respond to any allegations in a clear and credible manner”. The pages were originally withheld by President George W Bush, who said releasing them could divulge intelligence sources and methods.
Protecting relations between the US and Saudi Arabia is also thought to have been a factor. Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser to Barack Obama, expects there to be “some degree of declassification that provides more information”. Neither the congressional inquiry, nor the 9/11 Commission, found any evidence that the Saudi government or senior Saudi officials knowingly supported the attackers, who killed nearly 3,000 people. Roemer has said questions remain about the roles of Fahad al Thumairy - an official at the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles, who allegedly helped two of the hijackers find housing and transportation in southern California and Omar al Bayoumi, thought to have been a Saudi spy. He added: “We did not discover … Saudi government involvement at the highest level of the 9/11 attacks. “We certainly did not exonerate the Saudis, which was a fertile ground for fund-raising for al Qaeda.”
British astronaut Tim Peake gets a lot of press coverage. His historic trip to the International Space Station is rarely out of the news headlines. Last Sunday he even started and ‘ran’ the London Marathon. And on Wednesday he shared with the world a stunning picture of Tenerife. He tweeted “Amazingly clear view of Tenerife today”. And it was!

Low-cost Transavia delivers extra flights TRANSAVIA airlines, the “lowcost” arm of the Air France-KLM partnership, will offer 23% more flights in the coming winter season.
This adds up to a flight-capacity increase of almost 850,000 seats, compared with the 2015-16 winter season. And, according to the company, it will mean an extra 186 flights in the Canary Islands. The company this year expects to reach 4.4 million passengers in Spain, which will mean a 20% increase. This year, in total, Transavia will offer 47 routes from 15 Spanish
airports to seven destinations in France, Holland and Germany, with a capacity of 4.8 million seats. That will add a total of 333 weekly flights from Spain to Europe.
Spain is the leading market for Transavia, as far as capacity is concerned. In 2015, it reached a load factor of 92% in the Spanish routes.
A baptism of fire for lesbian couple TWO women, who were married at a civil ceremony in 2013, took their 15-month-old baby to church to be baptised at the Church of Santa Rita de Cassia, in Telde, on Gran Canaria.
But lesbians Milvia Armas, 33, and 30-year-old Yurena Mederos were in for a shock just before the ceremony started. Parish Priest José Ramírez approached Yurena and told her: “You can’t go up on the altar because you are not the biological mother of the child.” Yurena said that after weeks of the couple preparing for the event, the priest’s words had a huge impact. “You go on up there and spray holy water on the baby,” she told her partner. “I know what I have to do.” Milvia and the godparents went up while Yurena waited for the baby to be baptised. Then she got up, turned towards the pews and told the packed congregation what the priest had just said to her. Four other babies were being baptised that day, and there were around
300 people in attendance. According to Yurena, the priest denied the accusation, and then added: “I don’t want people like this in my church.” An argument ensued, with the couple’s relatives reproaching the priest for his attitude. After a few minutes, the group walked out of the church indignantly. A few days later, Yurena said she was still in shock, and wondered why the priest had behaved that way after meeting the couple twice ahead of the ceremony, showing no signs of a problem with Yurena’s presence in church. “Why can women with adopted children have them baptised, but I cannot?” she asked. But 70-year-old Father Ramírez said he had told the couple from the start that only the biological mother could go up on the altar “because the Church establishes that only the biological parents have the right to baptise their children”. When asked about adopted children, he said: “These are recognised by the Church, unlike same-sex marriage.” The Rev Ramírez believes that the whole “to-do” at church had
been planned in advance. “A lot of gays and lesbians came out screaming and hurling all kinds of insults at me,” he said. In particular, the priest recalled the words of the baby’s godfather: “He told me he was homosexual and that when he had a child, he would have him christened ‘because I bloody well say so’.” The Parish Priest added that the incident was captured by closed-circuit cameras, and that he had informed the legal services of the Canary Islands bishopric in case they considered it necessary to initiate legal action. Three days after the incident, a relative of the two women went to the parish house to ask Fr. Ramírez for the baby’s papers back and a 30-euro refund of the cash paid for the ceremony, claiming they would hold it again at another church. Yurena said the priest refused, and added that the christening was not valid because one of the godparents was homosexual “and that is dangerous for the child”. But Fr. Ramírez insisted the ceremony was valid, and could not be held again at his church - or any other church!

The bridegroom wore a wedding dress as…
Drunken stag party are banned, before take-off
A GROUP of men on a stag party to Tenerife, including the bridegroom-to-be in a wedding dress, were stopped from boarding a 6am flight on Monday because they had already hit the booze!
The “drunken” 30-strong gathering were turned away from the Monarch Airlines flight after police had been called to Manchester Airport. They were responding to complaints about the
men’s “drunken, aggressive and foul-mouthed behaviour” in the terminal. The plane’s captain eventually decided the stag party, believed to be from Merseyside, were in no condition to fly. And some of them already on-board were kicked off the flight. Two men were given official police warnings under the Public Order Act, but whether the bridegroom was cautioned is not known. One onlooker said: “It started with a police officer asking the group to quieten down. One guy started to be aggressive, so the policeman asked for his passport.
His friends then started to get rowdy and the other officers confiscated their passports, too. The bridegroom was wearing a wedding dress, so it was quite a bizarre scene.” He added: “The police officer then went to speak to the captain, who refused to allow them on the flight.” But despite the furore, Flight ZB562 was delayed for just 25 minutes. A Greater Manchester Police spokesman confirmed: “Police were called at around 5.45am to reports of a group of men causing a disturbance inside the terminal building.
They were asked to calm down, but their continued behaviour meant the captain of the plane took the decision to refuse the group permission to fly.” A Manchester Airport spokesman said: “A large group of passengers were off-loaded from a flight this morning because of drunken behaviour.” And a Monarch Airlines spokesman added: “We take a zerotolerance approach to disruptive behaviour on board all our flights. The safety and security of our passengers, crew and aircraft is our absolute priority.”
Poor beggars, down to their last billions THE super-rich in Britain and Ireland really did feel the pinch in the past year, many facing up to their biggest nightmare since the financial crash eight years ago. What will the neighbours think?
The Sunday Times Rich List features several names who have dropped down the board since last year’s compilation. Spare a thought for the family behind Europe’s largest steel-maker Lakshmi Mittal and his family, who own ArcelorMittal. They took a £2.08bn hit last year, dropping out of the top10 to No.11. Eight years ago the Mittals had a fortune of
£27.7bn, but they have just £7.12bn now and must be wearing disguises for fear of being recognised. Warner Music owner Len Blavatnik came in at No.3, but he slipped two places after a £1.58bn drop in wealth over the past 12 months, to £11.59bn. Violins please! But there must be some sunshine, and there is because property tycoon brothers David and Simon Reuben, who own London’s Millbank
Tower and the John Lewis headquarters in the capital, top the cash pile. Oh, and they also own London Oxford Airport and London Heliport. Simon started out importing carpets and buying real estate, and David
was in metals trading before they moved on to property investment. Their wealth is estimated at £13.1bn, up by £3.4bn from last year, so at least they can hold their heads high. Brothers Sri and Gopi Hinduja, who run the Hinduja Group, stay second with an unchanged fortune of £13bn. Nothing to be ashamed of, chaps! Power couple Ernesto and
Kirsty Berterelli come in at No.5 with a pot worth £9.78bn. And at No.6 is the Duke of Westminster, worth £9.35bn. His fortune is grounded on 300 acres of land in London’s Mayfair and Belgravia - as well as the Chester Grosvenor Hotel. But have some pity for Sir Richard Branson, who just edges into the top 20 in 19th spot, The owner of Virgin Airlines and Fitness Clubs will have a job living on his £4.52bn fortune unl e s s h e can
shape up and get his feet back on the ground. New to the list is Britain’s wealthiest sportsman, F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, coming in at 931st place with an estimated worth of £106m. But he won’t be that happy, will Lewis, who’s used to being a winner in his mighty Mercedes machine. Actor and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, creator of Ali G and Borat Sagdiyev, has a joint fortune of £105m with his actress wife, Isla Fisher, who once starred in Australian soap Home and Away. That’s surely enough to make you laugh! Entrants needed at least £103m to make it on to the current wealth list - up from last year’s £100m! Seems a bit harsh, but there’s always next year!

Mitsubishi fuels new car scandal MITSUBISHI Motors, in the wake of last year’s emission-test cheating by Volkswagen, has admitted using improper fuel tests since 1991.
The admission follows last week’s revelation that it had falsified fueleconomy data for more than 600,000 vehicles sold in Japan. Company President Tetsuro Aikawa has suggested that more irregularities might be found by saying an investigation was continuing. So much remained unknown, he said, that it was uncertain how the company would react - and it was
not clear how many cars were affected. Shares fell a further 10% in Tokyo this week, bringing the slide since the scandal erupted to almost 50%. Mr Aikawa said he did not know why employees resorted to rigging fuel-economy tests to make mileage figures seem better. Mitsubishi had, repeatedly, promised to come clean after a huge scandal 15 years ago, involving a systematic cover-up of vehicle defects. The inaccurate mileage-tests involved 157,000 of its eK wagon and eK Space mini-cars, and 468,000 Dayz and Dayz Roox vehicles produced for Nissan. All were sold in Japan only.
Weapons galore found in US airport luggage
PA S S E NG E R S with a record number of firearms in their hand-luggag, were prevented from boarding planes in the US last week.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) disclosed that screeners working in airports across the country found that 68
M OR E than 4,000 people in Catalonia succumbed to the contagious norovirus disease, having swallowed bottled spring-water contaminated with human faecal matter.
The regional government’s health department, in north-east Spain, said 4,146 people were treated for symptoms including nausea, vomiting and fever in Barcelona and Tarragona, after drinking the contaminated water from office water-coolers. Six needed hospital treatment. But Catalan health officials have now declared the norovirus outbreak over because no new cases have been detected in the past week or so. “It is the first time in the world that norovirus has been found in bottled water,” said Albert Bosch, a microbiology professor at the University of Barcelona, in charge of analysing the contaminated water. “The way this usually
happens is with tap -water but, s o m e h o w, faecal water got mixed up with drinking water. But in this case, we are talking bottled water. There is a process - and we don’t know at what point it happened.” Bottled-water company Eden Springs recalled more than 6,150 bottles of water, which had been distributed to 925 companies, in response to the outbreak as a precaution. The company said it bottled the contaminated water in Andorra, a tiny, mountainous principality between Spain and France. Norovirus is rarely lifethreatening but is highly contagious. It spreads from an infected person, from contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces. But despite the unpleasantness, most people recover from its effects in two to three days.

of the 73 weapons uncovered were loaded - and 27 of them even had a round in the chamber! Federal law prohibits guns being carried in hand-luggage. But they can be transported in bags or suitcases checked-in to the aircraft hold if they are unloaded - and declared to the airline before the flight departs. The security group said: “If an item looks like a real bomb, gre-
nade or mine, it is prohibited. “When these items are found at a checkpoint, or in checked baggage, they can cause significant delays because the explosives-detection professionals must respond to resolve the alarm. “Even if they are novelty items, you are prohibited from bringing them on board the aircraft.” Passengers who try to bring hand-guns in
their luggage can face arrest and a penalty of up to £7,630. Among the finds last week were two loaded guns at Boston’s Logan Airport, while other weapons were discovered at Raleigh-Durham airport, DallasFort Worth, Phoenix and Detroit. Two replica military rounds were also discovered among checked-in luggage at Tucson, Arizona, said the TSA.
BHS on same rocky path as Woolworths BHS, the High Street chain, has gone into administration, with an uncertain future - if any! It has put 11,000 jobs at risk and up to 164 stores are facing the threat of closure.
The collapse is the biggest retail failure since Woolworths folded in 2008 with the loss of nearly 30,000 jobs. And analyst Judi Bevan said BHS had suffered the same fate as Woolworths, becoming “not relevant any more to people”. Dominic Chappell, who owns the chain, said “no one is to blame” for the retailer’s failure, and added that he would continue to work with the administrators to “find a solution”. Administrators Duff & Phelps said in a statement that the group would “continue to trade as usual” while a buyer is sought.
It added: “The group (BHS) has been undergoing restructuring and, as has been widely reported, the shareholders have been in negotiations to find a buyer for the business. “These negotiations have been unsuccessful. In addition, property sales have not materialised as expected. in both number and value. “Consequently, as a result of a lower-than-expected cash balance, the group is very unlikely to meet all contractual payments. “The directors, therefore, have no alternative but to put the group into administration to protect it for all creditors. The group will continue to trade as usual while the administrators seek
to sell it as a going concern.” As well as stores remaining open for the moment, all online orders will be processed as usual. None of the staff has yet been sent home, and employees’ situations will be “worked through in due course”, Sky News was informed. John Hannett, general secretary of the shopworkers’ union USDAW, told the TV company: “The key thing now for my members, and the 11,000 individuals affected by the announcement, is for an open dialogue so we can investigate and research the opportunities.” BHS was bought last year by a consortium of financiers, led by Mr
Chappell, known as Retail Acquisitions, from Sir Philip Green, who agreed the sale for £1. The retailer has debts of more than £1.3bn, including a pension-fund deficit of £571m. Sir Philip is reported to have offered £80m towards the cost of the pensions, though the regulator could still pursue further payment from the retail billionaire, who bought BHS for £200m in 2000. Sports Direct is understood to want some of the BHS stores, but will do so only if it does not have to take on any pension liabilities. Along with Sports Direct, up to 30 other retailers may look at buying either a slimmed-down version of the business out of administration, or pick over its store estate. The BHS failure will probably raise questions about the company’s financial stewardship, and the role of its directors. Retail experts say the chain has suffered from years of under-investment, leaving its range and estate looking tired.

The Conspiracy Files: Who Shot Down MH17?
Don't Miss...
Tuesday 3 May, BBC2, 21.00 On 17 July 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed, killing 298 passengers in the worst air disaster for two decades. Alarmingly, the devastating crash occurred just four months after the mysterious disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370. Is this just a coincidence? The cause of the crash has been focus of a host of conspiracy theories, many of which involve Russia, Ukraine and the CIA. The official investigation report into MH17 flight argues that only a powerful ground-to-air missile could be responsible. Yet, there are eyewitness accounts of other aircrafts seen flying next to MH17 close to impact. To further fuel the conspiracies, Russia and Ukraine blame each other but both countries are unable to provide all the critical radar data from that day. Family members do not trust the official explanations and there is a long way to go to bring about justice for the victims. This programme tracks down eye witnesses, and speaks with secret intelligence sources to try to sort fact from fiction.
Aidan: The Rarest Boy in the World Thursday 5th May, Channel 5, 22:00
Documentary focusing on Aidan Smith, a boy with an extremely rare condition characterised by lumps and growths covering a large percentage of his body. He also has brain damage and epileptic fits and his symptoms baffled the team of 18 consultants who originally examined him. The programme follows Aidan’s progress and that of his parents Vikki and Karl as they learn that he suffers from Cloves syndrome, a genetic disorder with fewer than 130 cases diagnosed worldwide to date, and prepare for the possibility of Aidan having a major five-hour operation to remove a mass of tissue in his face. The family travel to America to meet the specialist for whom the syndrome is named as well as other children with the condition, and back at home, receive some good news when they learn that Aidan can be entered into a pioneering drugs trial.

The Secret ITV1, 21.00
When Colin Howell and Hazel Buchanan meet at their local Baptist Church in rural Northern Ireland, they start an affair which will have cataclysmic consequences. The location: a seaside town in Northern Ireland in 1991. The scene: two bodies in a carbon monoxide filled car. A former nurse Lesley Howell, and a police officer Trevor Buchanan, have apparently taken their own lives together.… This is the true story of a Sunday school teacher and a respectable dentist who formed a murderous partnership. Hazel Buchanan and Colin Howell meet at their local Baptist Church in Coleraine, Northern Ireland and embark upon a passionate and destructive affair, which climaxes in an elaborate plot to commit the “perfect murder” to kill both their partners, Lesley and Trevor, and make it look like a suicide pact. The killers fool the police and get away with murder, but their relationship soon sours and they separate. They rebuild their lives, each remarrying and prospering, but can never escape what they have done. As a series of disasters befalls Howell, he finally confesses his crimes to the horrified elders of his church. Convicted of murder, Howell implicates Hazel in the killing. Hazel admits involvement but pleads not guilty, claiming she was coerced. In a climactic murder trial, Howell gives evidence against his former lover.

The Rack Pack BBC2, 21.30
The Rack Pack, BBC iPlayer’s first ever comedy drama feature film, is being broadcast on BBC Two after the semi-final of the World Snooker Championship, on 30 April at 9.30pm, following its great success on iPlayer. The critically acclaimed film was released exclusively on BBC iPlayer in January and made it into the top 20 most requested titles that month; it has had over 1 million requests in total since, making it the most successful BBC iPlayer Original to date. Directed by Brian Welsh (Glasgow Girls, Black Mirror), this comedy drama explores the glory days of the Seventies and Eighties snooker scene, when huge characters became household names and Snooker Loopy troubled the pop charts. The film is written by Shaun Pye, Mark Chappell and Alan Connor, who are the team behind A Young Doctor’s Notebook. The story tells of the rivalry between Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins (Luke Treadaway, Fortitude) - whose natural talent and showmanship transformed the image of the traditional game and captivated audiences across the country - and Steve ‘The Nugget’ Davis (Will Merrick, Skins) who under the guidance of manager Barry Hearn (Kevin Bishop, The Kevin Bishop Show) dominated the sport throughout the Eighties and ushered in a new era of professionalism. Nichola Burley (Death Comes To Pemberley) plays Alex’s wife, Lynn Higgins, and James Bailey takes on the role of the greatest player never to be World Champion, Jimmy White.

The Durrells ITV1, 20.00
Just when life is looking good for the Durrells, Louisa learns her domineering Aunt Hermione (Barbara Flynn), Hermione’s neurotic niece, Cousin Prue (Felicity Montagu) and Prue’s lumpen husband, Geoffrey (Jeff Rawle) will be visiting. As true Anglophiles they complain about the primitive nature of the island and view what the family are achieving with distaste. Hermione is unimpressed that when Larry isn’t furious about his latest book rejection, he spends his entire time in his bedroom with his newly arrived girlfriend, Nancy (Lizzy Watts). To add to Louisa’s problems, Spiro stumbles across her and Sven in a clinch forcing her to tell the children about their relationship. How will they take the news? In an attempt to show her Aunt just how positive their lives are in Corfu and avoid having her Aunt send Gerry to a boarding school, Louisa arranges a tour in the only car on the island – Spiros’. However, the trip is soon abandoned when they walk in on Margo kissing Angel at the Countess’, despite her knowing that fraternising with staff could cost her, her job. Things reach a head when Louisa crashes Spiro’s beloved car. Will Louisa have the nerve to stand up to her Aunt or will the island, and the addition of a generator, weave its magical charm over the relations? Gerry is delighted when Theo introduces him to fellow conservationist, Mrs Vadrukakis (Etela Pardo). However, her desire to start an RSPCA centre on the island with Gerry stalls when she sees how he intends to feed his newly acquired owlets. Louisa is shocked when Sven asks for her hand in marriage. She tells him she’ll think about it – but will she say yes?

Russian Grand Prix Highlights. Steve Jones presents highlights of the Russian Grand Prix - the fourth race of the 2016 season. It is the third time Formula 1 has visited the Sochi circuit on the Black Sea coast and it has been a happy hunting ground for Mercedes’ driver Lewis Hamilton who will be hoping to make it three wins out of three. But it is teammate Nico Rosberg who is smashing it in 2016: he’s won all three races this season, and the last six in total. In Shanghai, following a gearbox change penalty and a mechanical failure in qualifying, Lewis fought from the back of the grid to seventh, limiting the points-damage. But he needs to keep out of trouble and start challenging Nico if he is to keep his championship hopes alive. Will the fact that he is the only driver ever to have won at the Sochi Autodrom give him confidence? And can Ferrari and Red Bull continue to challenge Mercedes’ supremacy?

Murray goes to great lengths to see Bex, but she is not best pleased when she finds out what he’s been up to. Curtis forces Murray to attend a work meeting to discuss financing an event which Bex is arranging. Bex is not thrilled to see him and things get worse when Murray has to explain that the bank won’t be able to provide additional funding. When local businessman Julian (James Lance) steps in and offers her the money, Bex is delighted. Murray tries to win her attention back by coming up with a showstopping fundraising idea for the auction. On the evening of the appeal Murray is determined to make it a success for Bex. All is going well until his fundraising idea falls through, and as a last-minute solution, Bex - unwillingly - steps in to be auctioned as a dinner date. Julian, who is clearly interested in Bex, begins to bid on her and it soon becomes a two-horse race between him and Murray. Who will win?

In spite of the toll it has taken on his family, his partner is standing by him. He says: “They count it down by Christmases and birthdays to go. It’s four birthdays which doesn’t sound a lot but in real time it’s four years isn’t it? “Austin [my son] has grown up in here, he took his first steps in here pretty much in the visitor’s hall. The last year and a half, two years, [I’ve] watched my little boy grow up from a weekly visit - it’s not what I want.” The prison’s head of residence and safety Jacqui Spencer explains that staff know virtually nothing about most inmates before they walk into the jail’s reception area. She says: “With new receptions, you have absolutely no idea, I have no idea if any of these lads are on detox or if they need a methadone script, first time in custody, vulnerable, we know none of that, literally unless we know them, until they walk through that door.” Many prisoners are not new to the system - like 30-year-old father of two Rocky Gamble, who has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply heroin with an estimated street value of £200,000 and is waiting to be sentenced. Despite issues with discipline inside the prison, he says he has changed: “The players change but the game don’t. Grayson Perry: All Man Channel 4, 22:00
Turner Prizewinning artist and double Bafta Award-winning TV presenter Grayson Perry investigates contemporary masculinity. As a frock-wearing, mountain-biking father of one, he’s got a unique perspective on his own tribe. In each episode, Grayson spends time in a different ultramale world to see what their extreme maleness can tell us about the changing lives and expectations of all men in Britain today, as Grayson reflects on his prejudices, his own masculine identity and his upbringing. In this first episode, Hard Man, Grayson plunges into the world of cagefighting, or Mixed Martial Arts, in north-east England. As a self-described ‘life-long sissy’, Grayson has a problem with machismo, but as he spends time with the fighters, many of his expectations about hyper-macho men are overturned.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke
Rick’s a real Diamond! IT was obvious from the song choices that the 10th heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, at Churchills, in Los Cristianos, would be really tight. The format differed slightly from previous heats because there were a few “no-shows” from people who had registered to sing but, for whatever reason, did not make it. So, all singers were asked to sing twice over two rounds, with the same judging criteria that applies to the normal TLK format, producing a final three for the sing-off. Churchills, a regular TLK supporter, was the first venue ever to hold a heat, way back in 2011. And it has produced some worthy finalists, so expectations were high. Gordon Slaney, from Oasis Fm, hosted the event, and the judging panel comprised Churchills’ compere Kerry Railton, Angie Muwberry, representing the bar, Oasis Fm’s
Afternoon Show host Robin Elliott and vocal coach Pauline Carville. First off was Rick, with an excellent version of Neil Diamond’s 1978 hit Forever in Blue Jeans. Next up was Angie, and Billy Jo Spears’ Sing Me an Old Fashioned Song suited her perfectly. Gavin took the stage next with Heaven, by Bryan Adams, which was well-delivered and received. Nina, TLK’s mostentered contestant so far this year, was next with James Blunt’s Your Beautiful, and she showed real emotion,
along with quality. Jimmy, our No.5 singer, performed a strong rendition of Thinking Out Loud, by Ed Sheeran. It was a huge surprise to everyone when Rob, dressed to impress, launched into David Guetta’s Titanium, complete with dance moves. He was obviously enjoying his four minutes of local fame, and the crowd loved it, too. Karlier, the heat’s youngest contestant, offered Rihanna’s Close To You, which proved an excellent crowdpleaser. Georgina also chose a
Rihanna song, Russian Roulette - and what a way to end part one because the audience absolutely loved it. The next section was performed in reverse order: Georgina sang Madonna’s Like A Prayer, Karlier performed Summertime and Rob chose Emeli Sande’s Clown. Jimmy sang Three Little Birds, by Bob Marley, while Nina went for Dido’s Life For Rent. Gavin chose Chasing Cars, by Snow Patrol, and Angie the Pogues’ hit Dirty Old Town. Rick rounded it off with another Diamond classic, Cracklin Rosie. Rob, Georgina and Rick were soon chosen as finalists, to the crowd’s delight, and Rob, drawn first, performed a sparkling version of Dusty Springfield’s You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me. Georgina was next, with a brilliant take on Alicia Keys’s Empire State Of Mind. And Rick rounded it all off with another Diamond
song, I Am … I Said. The audience loved it and, unsurprisingly, Rick was announced as Heat 10 winner. It means we now have five females and five males in the grand final, on 4th June at Showtime, Las Americas. There, heat-winners will compete for the 1,000-euro cash prize and the title of Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2016 This year’s competition is proudly sponsored by Bombay Babu Authentic Indian Tandoori Restaurants, which has three perfect places to enjoy the best Indian food in Tenerife: Torviscas Playa, Callao Salvaje and their latest restaurant in La Tejita commercial centre, between Los Abrigos to El Medano. Bombay Babu also offers a full take-away and free delivery service - call 922 705 092 or go on-line at bombaybabu.com As an additional bonus, the TLK heats are being filmed by MyVideoI, with each entrant’s
footage posted on Oasis Fm facebook page. Up For Grabs is a personalised video of your journey with Tenerife Loves Karaoke, and all you need to lend your support is go to w w w. y o u t u b e . c o m / myvideoi Click subscribe, then ‘like’ your favourite video. The video/contestant with the most ‘likes’ on 1st June wins the personalised video. There’s still time to compete in any or all the remaining heats open to everyone over the age of 13, every nationally and to anyone who has entered before. Call Oasis Fm on 902 232 102, register at the relevant venues, or at facebook oasisfm Tenerife. But hurry because there are few heats left. They will be held during May on Monday (2nd) at Palms Bar, Golf del Sur; 11th, Dylans Bar, El Mirador; 22nd, Albatross Bar, Costa del Silencio and, finally, Leonardos, Las Americas on 27th.

By Vanessa Vee CALLING all adrenaline junkies … wow, I really experienced a serious rush last week during a Radikal Jet trip, which is pretty new to Tenerife.
You may have glimpsed this bright-red vessel down at Puerto Colon.
29th April - 5th May 2016
It’s such a scream
You may even have had a glance or two of this craft, seven metres in length and carrying a maximum of 12 people, zooming along the ocean. It was an absolute “must” for me as soon as I saw it and, once we were all kitted out with life-jackets, it was time to board. We received a safety briefing with a recommendation to hold on tight, then cruised leisurely out of the port. I was coolness personified, thinking: “I can handle this.” At least, I thought I could until,
my goodness, we were off … quite literally! I always saw myself as a thrill-seeker back in the day. There was never a ride at a theme park or fairground I wouldn’t try. I would mount any horse, no matter how difficult or what size. I used to be a real daredevil. But, and I believe this probably happens to us all as we get older, we tend to think of the possible outcomes, and the fear-factor involved. We skimmed across the ocean at speeds of up to 90km per hour, incorporating random, 360-degree spins and
emergency brakes. The ear-piercing screams from the group reassured me that I wasn’t the only one petrified. The various emotions experienced in such a short period are immense … one minute, screams of laughter, and the next minute, your life flashes before your very eyes. It is so spectacular that you can’t honestly believe you will come out of it alive! For a 20-minute experience, prices start from 30 euros per person. But there are some
excellent, discounted, jet-pack options. For example, 40 minutes on a jet-ski, followed by a 20-minute Radikal experience: 80 euros for a single rider, or 110 euros for two people. For those who want to take their pack option a little easier, chillout and experience parascending and the Radikal trip: 58 euros, or 100 euros for two riders. To book the Radikal Jet experience, or any of the adrenaline packs, reserve online at www. tenerifesunshine.com or call 922 751 867. You can
also email info@tenerifesunshine.com or call into our offices, in Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos, or Tropicana Shopping Centre, opposite Hotel Jardin Tropical, in San Eugenio. If you are linked to any interesting activity on offer in Tenerife, or you’d like me to report on any specific excursion, please contact editor@canarianweekly. com and let me know. PS: Please don’t suggest paragliding off a mountain. I just don’t think my nerves would be able to cope with that at my age!
Caring for the cam belt By Emma at Motorworld
MOST cars use a cam belt, often referred to as timing belt, which forms an integral part of the engine and is vital for its function.
Manufacturers recommend changing these after a certain number of miles/kilometres, which vary from make to make. And sometimes they specify that it should be changed when the car reaches a certain age, regardless of how far it has travelled. A good mechanic will also replace the timingbelt tensioner when he changes the belt itself. This is more cost-effective than having it changed it at a later date.
In modern engines, cam belts and matching components are often subjected to a great deal of stress. High rotational speeds, vibrations and extreme temperatures (especially here in Tenerife) can easily have a negative effect on the functioning of parts. Cracks may appear below the metal surface, overheating, worn-out sealing rings of ball-bearings can all
lead to increased metal wear. These problems can even cause the pulleys to be jammed, which, in turn, can easily cause belt damage. If a timing belt snaps when the engine is running, this can cause costly and, sometimes, irreparable damage to the engine. Some of the valves will have been held open when they should not be and, thus, will be struck by the pistons.
The usual failure of timing belts is either stripped teeth (which leave a smooth section of belt where the drive cog will slip) or delamination and unravelling of the fibre cores. Correct belt tension is critical: too loose and the belt will whip; too tight and it will whine and put excess strain on the bearings of the cogs. In either case belt life will be drastically shortened.
Aside from the belt, also common is a failure of the tensioner, and/ or the various gear and idler bearings, causing the belt to derail. That’s why it is advisable to change the tensioner at the same time as the belt. In an internal combustion engine application, the timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, which, in turn, controls the opening and closing of the engine’s valves. A four-stroke engine requires that the valves open and close once every other turn of the crankshaft. The timing belt performs this important job. In some engine designs, the timing belt may also be used to drive other engine components, such as the water pump. A timing belt is, typically, rubber with high-tensile fibres running the length of the belt as tension members. Rubber degrades with higher temperatures, and with contact with
motor oil, so the lifeexpectancy of a timing belt is lowered in hot or leaky engines. Newer or more expensive belts are made of temperature-resistant materials such as “highly-saturated nitrile”. Older belts have trapezoid-shaped teeth, leading to high rates of tooth wear. Newer manufacturing techniques allow for curved teeth, which are quieter and last longer. Timing belts are typically inaccessible and difficult to inspect. The manufacturer or your mechanic may also recommend the replacement of other parts, such as the water pump, when the timing belt is replaced, because the additional cost to replace the water pump is negligible compared with the cost of accessing the timing belt. You may then find it much more cost-effective to change the timing belt; tensioner and water pump at the same time.

29th April - 5th May 2016 RAFAEL Anson, President of Spain’s Royal Academy of Gastronomy, is calling for Unesco to declare tapas, the country’s traditional yet humble snacks, an Intangible, Cultural Heritage. When it comes to Spanish food, tapas carry their reputation across the globe, so why shouldn’t he want the small food dishes acknowledged? Traditionally, they are served with cold beverage, intended to provide a nibble for the snacker while protecting his/her drink from flies and insects. Anson told Spanish radio broadcaster Cadena Ser: “Tapas are the very model of food. Pizza in itself is not intangible, but the concept of the
Give tapas its own taste of grandeur
Mediterranean diet, for example, is. And tapas, too, are a way of eating.” Anson said the Spanish Ministry of Culture would be making a formal presentation for tapas to be included and, coincidentally, Unesco is said to be “already looking into it”. But for tapas to be considered, it must fit the bill - and its Cultural Heritage status has to contribute towards its visibility and awareness, as well as its protection. Academy President Rafael Anson called the snacks “the very model
of food” and said a formal presentation would definitely be made. However, in the Basque country and Navarre, in northern Spain, there is also a style food much like tapas called pintxos. These small - plate dishes are, typically, served skewered on toothpicks. But it’s not clear whether they will also be included in the official presentation to Unesco. Spain currently has 15 items on Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, which includes fiesta of the pa-
Winemakers united!
LA CASA del Vino, in El Sauzal, hosted the inauguration of the Association of Winemakers and Winegrowers of Tenerife this week.
It is a new entity, which brings together 30 wineries and will account for over 70% of the Island’s bottled-wine production. The partnership includes four prestigious wineries of Tenerife (Cumbres de Abona, Valle de Oro de La Orotava, Bodegas Insulares de Tenerife and Valle de Güímar), representing about 2,000 vintners,

plus fine winemakers said Enrique Alfonso, President of the new organisation. Alfonso, said it was an “exciting project that unifies”, and added: “This formation constitutes a necessary step for the creation of the Designation of Origin of Tenerife. This is a new era in the wine of the Island.” It is a bold step because, traditionally, growers have resented their competitors. But Alfonso said: “We must put aside the resentments, the arguments, and start supporting a project to be more cohesive and more united for the future. “We want to incorporate all possible part-
ners to keep going forward. It is a unifying project, and we have all the elements of the sector behind us.” He pointed out that the main objective of the Association was “the defence and protection of the vine in Tenerife, as well as to encourage the development of a wine model, based on the respect for tradition and the environment.” The Association board, also chaired by Alfonso, comprises Jonatan García (SoagranorteSuerte del Marqués), Borja Pérez (ArtificerIgnios), Juan Francisco Farina (The borujo), Ismael Diaz (the Mocanero) and Diego Reverón (Bodegas Reverón).

Alongside Cyprus, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Morocco and Portugal, it is also one of the countries where the Mediterranean diet is considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

A ROYAL COVER-UP
By Carl Pattison HE has finally done it, so congratulations to the stylist who convinced him “it has got to go”. Yes, Prince William has, at last, given in to the fact that, just like his father, he has lost his hair! After years of doing the comb-over and trying to disguise it, he has had his hair clipped short, and it looks so much better. There isn’t an easy cure for male baldness, apart from a painful implant, which can be costly and doesn’t always work. Admitting to it, and having the offending wisps removed, is far
29th April - 5th May 2016
more attractive - and less ageing - than trying to convince yourself you still have a full head of hair. Combing strands over, lacquering them down, creating a parting that’s near your ear - or worse, at the back of your head - looks ridiculous. Removing it and living with what’s left is the better option.
A guy has to decide himself when to be brave enough to take the plunge, but sooner is always better than later! If you are starting to thin on top, ask your hairdresser for an honest opinion about what will suit you best. Don’t ask those around you because, more often than not, they will tell you what you want to hear. Yes, it can be distressing, even though some women think it doesn’t matter for guys. Believe me, it does. So handle them with compassion, as you would a woman in that situation. Hair is hair and, be it on your head or that of someone else, most of us like to have it - not lose it!
BIG GIRLS ARE BIG ON STYLE By Carl Pattison BIG girls love fashion, too, so why aren’t we seeing more of it in our stores? We don’t want to see leggings and a big top thrown over it any more, because plus-size girls also have style. Yet the stores don’t seem to recognise this. Imagine how you’d feel, shopping around for new clothing, only to find nothing fits or looks good. This is the struggle faced by larger ladies and girls every time they go into a store: a whole array of fabulous clothes, but just the smallest section devoted to curvier females. When will fashion wake up to the fact that more than 50% of women are
over size-16, which is now considered the “average” for them? Stores are losing out on major sales and, shamefully, cannot find reasons not to stock plus-size clothing. Even their smallest of sizes are dressed to look even smaller by pinning the garments at the back, and using chrome or black-glossed mannequins to “slim down” their styling to appeal to more consumers. When will we see a plus-sized mannequin next to a slimmer version in a store, to show the vast variation of figures around the globe? Not in our lifetime, I expect. Some ladies suit being curvier, and not all
of them want, or try, to be stick-thin. It’s all a matter of choice, so why are they not being catered for in the fashion stakes? Come on, all you major stores, start giving women what they really want, and stop making clothes to fit the minority only. It’s quite clear that larger ladies want to look good as well.
Exercise creates fresh brain cells By Val Sainsbury EXPERTS have revealed how 3040 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise can cure what ails you, by creating new neurons - electrical impulses - which increase the blood flow in parts of the brain involved with learning, memory and emotion.
They admit that aerobic exercise doesn’t prevent people from being sad or depressed, but it does help them recover from the symptoms. It took about 30 years of work in neuro-science to discover the link between aerobic exercise and subsequent cognitive thinking, reports New York Magazine. The experts have also debunked the theory that once people grow older, their brains cannot make new neurons. “If you are exercis-
ing so that you sweat - about 30-40 minutes - new brain cells are being born, in the memory area,” said Karen Postal, President of the US Academy of Clinical Neuro-psychology, which carried out the research. Other studies have noted an increase of blood flow to the brain’s frontal lobe, which is involved with clear-thinking, planning ahead, focus and concentration. But this region is also associated with emotion regulation, which explains a study from a Harvard University
study, that found “acute aerobic exercise did not prevent an increase in sadness response to the subsequent release of stress hormones. Researchers showed the final scene of the 1979 film The Champ, regarded as a “reliable tear jerker”, to an 80-strong of participants. Prior to watching the snippet, some of the onlookers were ask to jog for 30 minutes, while the others performed stretching exercises for the same period. Each subject was given a survey to report how sad the film made him or her, while the researcher kept them busy for another 15 minutes, and then they were asked how they were feeling. The team found that participants who reported difficulties concentrating, or felt overwhelmed by their emotions, were less affect by their symptoms following 30 minutes of aerobic exercise. And they reported less sadness at the end of the study than those who did not exercise. Besides enhancing clarity and memory, experts have found another benefit of going for a long run … mindlessness! This exercise serves three broad, adaptive functions: future planning, creativity and dishabituation (response to a new stimulus). It also includes daydreaming, or getting lost in your own thoughts, which, say researchers, is important to our well-beings.

Mother’s Day, with a new commercial twist
Height of success! READY, steady, go! Tenerife Bluetrail, Spain’s highest mountain race, returns to the Island on 11th June, with more than 1,000 athletes already registered to tackle the gruelling annual event, from sea level to a height of over 3,550 metres. Under the slogan “trail running for all”, it features five tracks, making it accessible to runners of all abilities, from professional athletes to amateurs: The races are: Ultratrail (97km), Trail (66
km), Marathon (43km), MediaTrail (20km) and the adapted trail, called “Challenge” (8km). One of the highlights of the run is the variety of landscapes and contrasts it goes through, including the dryness of the South and the lush, green North vegetation, guaranteeing fabulous scenery for the mountain runners. However, the true star of the Tenerife Bluetrail is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Teide National Park, where
daring athletes on the Ultratrail category will reach a height of 3,555m, starting from Los Cristianos and finishing in Puerto de la Cruz. The record Bluetrail target for top runners, achieved by Spanish athlete Carlos Pascual last year, is 13hrs 2mins for traversing the 97km trail, which connects these two locations. In addition, runners who complete the Ultratrail or Trail categories will earn five or four points, respectively, to-
wards next year’s UltraTrail du Mont-Blanc® (UTMB). That’s because the Tenerife Bluetrail is one of the approved qualifying races - testament to the ever-increasing importance of the Tenerife extravaganza in the calendar of international events. There are still places available in all the Bluetrail categories and, for further details and registration, athletes should visit: www. tenerifebluetrail.com.
Cats Welfare news
Plenty to tempt you WE have uploaded lots of new cats on our website for our sponsorship scheme so there is even more for you to choose from. Our new Cat and Kitten Sponsorship is an deal way of helping unwanted cats with nowhere else to go. We believe every cat deserves a forever home and we do everything we can to find new homes for these poor, unwanted pets as soon as possible. In the meantime, we care for as many as we can in foster homes, but that costs money. However, you can help out by sponsoring a cat or kitten of your choice from our website with a minimum donation of only three euros a month.
You will receive an e mail which includes a certificate with a photo of your chosen cat or kitten and a copy of its profile, telling you a bit more about the animal. In addition, you will also be sent regular email updates, telling you how your sponsored cats or kittens are doing. Best of all, we’ll tell you when we have found them a new home and set them on the road to a happy future, thanks to you. If you struggle to think of what to buy for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, etc, for the cat-lover in your life, this is an ideal, inexpensive gift. To find out more (including an FAQ section), or to sponsor
your first cat or kitten, visit our website http:// www.cats-welfare-tenerife.com/sponsor-a-cat Marvellous Mammy Mammy has been looking for a home for quite a while, but sadly, she always seems to be overlooked by people wanting to adopt. She was found near some basuras more than a year ago with her kittens. The kittens are all grown-up now, obviously, but Mammy is still looking for her forever home. She is a loving cat with a beautiful nature. She has lovely big, green eyes and is always alert to sounds - and what’s going on around her. She loves hugs but on her terms: she likes to come to you rather than you to her.
She likes a tickle of the belly and is not a fussy eater. Mammy knows her name and comes running when she’s called, and she really does deserve a loving home, and we hopeful it is out there somewhere. If you are interested, or even considering adopting a cat, contact us for a no-obligation chat. All cats/kittens go on a two-week trial, so you can be sure of making the right decision before you commit. Latest availability of all our cats and kittens is always shown on our web site www.catswelfare-tenerife/pets. If you are interested in any shown please contact Theresa on 680 475 500 (10am-6pm) daily).
ADEJE’S Economic Development and Job Creation department, in collaboration with the PFAE - a training employment initiative - is promoting local commerce and shops in the run-up to Spain’s Mother’s Day on Sunday (1st May). The campaign has been running throughout the week, with more than 50 local businesses taking part in the borough. Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín said: “Local businesses are participating with promotional offers, discounts, gifts and extras.” There are also free beauty treatments on offer from PFAE trainees at the CDTCA, in Piedra Redonda park, today
(Friday). Call 922 756 249 ext. 751, for an appointment. The Mother’s Day campaign also underlines the relevance of equality in our society, says Adeje Council, adding: “Thank you to all mothers for educating us in values such as respect, dialogue, resilience and responsibility.” A competition has been running alongside on the Council’s social networks (twitter, Instagram and facebook), in which members of the public can share a photograph of themselves shopping in Adeje, naming the shop or businesses and using the hashtag, #YoComproEnAdeje. The result will be revealed during Sunday’s Mother’s Day.
Right blend just a taster COSTA ADEJE’S 11th annual Adeje Cocktail Competition, which takes place today (Friday), features bar men and women from all over the Canaries, striving to win through to the national championships. It will be held at Adeje Centre for Tourism Development (CDTCA), backed by the borough’s Economic Development and Tourism departments, and organised by the Tenerife Barman Association (CDTCA). This year, all the action is concentrated in one day, with different classification and section events and two master classes, given by European experts. The public are welcome to attend, from 4-9.30pm, with winners announced at the end of the session. The day will actually begin with master classes under the watchful eyes of Vito Calculli and Marco Caldone, both acknowledged experts. Later, Antony Serra will demonstrate his “flair”. The most important competitions will be to choose the best cock-
tails, and to select those to go forward to represent Tenerife at national level. That competition starts at 7pm, while the IV Gin and Tonic contests for the Schweppes and Gin Rutte trophies starts an hour earlier. Local Development Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín said: “This has become one of the most prestigious events in the Canarian cocktail calendar and, nationally, brings together people from the Canarian hotel and bar sectors.” He added: “It is important that the Costa Adeje tourism label continues to have these kind of references, which complement the overall offer to visitors, particularly in the fields of gastronomy and leisure, such as those promoted by this competition. “We are delighted that almost all the hotel schools in the islands will be represented here, and that we are able to continue to contribute to the professional training of our young bar personnel in the Canaries.”

The Final curtain
THE curtain came down on the Direct Telecom Pool League 2015-16 season on Tuesday at Palms Sports Bar, which hosted the annual Presentation and Finals night.
Eight players made it into the grand final and there were some superb matches, with all players doing themselves justice. The first quarter-final, on Table One, saw Wez (Tenerife Hammers A) facing Jay (Treehouse A), and Wez flew out of the traps. He punished an error from Jay to take the first frame swiftly, and he never looked in trouble in the second frame.
Jay was left with scraps, with Wez taking the second frame comfortably to move into the last four. It was much closer on Table Two as Harry (Gaffers B) looked all over Steve (Dreamers A). Both players have improved this season, but Harry looked in control. He took the first frame smoothly and, after potting four balls in the next one, he had an easy black to complete the task. But he jawed it in the bottom right-hand pocket, giving Steve a lifeline. The Dreamers’ player got through the balls patiently and rolled in the black to level it. How Harry must have rued his missed chance because Steve was always in control of the

decider, sending his opponent home with a bit to spare. Back on Table One, the first-round highlight paired Gaffers guv’nor Neil against The Ripper (Rewind). As Division One champions and Scotland match-player of the tournament, both players had byes through to finals night. And it proved a quality affair from the first leg. The Ripper is a considered player, but to say he takes his time is an understatement. If he hadn’t been nicknamed The Ripper, be might have been Danny The Tortoise. Remember how the Tortoise got on against the Hare? Well, this was no different. The Ripper kept his composure to win the first frame and, though Neil took the second, The Ripper looked in control. There was little Neil could
do in frame three and, when the black nestled its chosen pocket, the favourite was out! A week ago, Paul sunk the last black to give Tenerife Hammers A the Cup. And that gave him confidence in the singles event. He edged a tight, first frame against Roscoe (Palms A) and the second was just as close. At the death, Paul was left a long, tough pot on the black - and missed it by a country mile. Roscoe had purposely left his last yellow over the middle pocket and was licking his lips. But the black kicked back off the bottom cushion, cannoned off the yellow and flopped into the middle bag. It was an outrageous fluke, and that can sometimes be the bit of luck you need to win tournaments. Paul was taken all the way by Steve in the semi-final, even though his luck would run out, because he should never have let it go on so long. He was in top gear, taking the first only to jaw the black in the second. Steve accepted the gift, only for Paul to dominate the third and then, remarka-

bly, jaw the black again in the fourth frame. Steve enjoyed the déjà vu as a couple of smart pots levelled the match. But Paul would not be denied, booking his final place with another smart clearance. These five frames were completed before the other table had finished their second! Wez and The Ripper played ultra-conservatively. Neither player wanted to make a mistake, which dragged the frames out. It took over 90 minutes for the five frames, and Wez did just about enough to make his first-ever final. This made it an allHammers affair for the title, and it really was a classic. Paul, as he normally does, started smartly. Wez made a couple of errors and Paul snapped up the first frame. The second was similar. Wez wasted a few chances and Paul finished like a hit-man. It looked as though
his match with The Ripper had taken it out of Wez. But Paul potted a couple of cue balls and Wez took frame three. Another poor shot in frame four gave Wez a chance, which he accepted gratefully to level the match. It was game-on. Paul was shaking his head because, like his semi, it shouldn’t have gone to a deciding frame. Maybe that was a blessing in disguise because he found an extra gear. When Paul gets cueing sweetly he is unplayable, and he took control of the frame coolly. Giving Wez nothing, he rolled in the last black to take the spoils. It’s been quite a week for one of the nice guys in the league. We now have our endof-season break, and thoughts turn towards the new campaign. It starts on Tuesday, 5th July, and if you are interested in entering a team, email ross@ oasisfm.com.

Razar luck cuts deep! Cordoba 0 CD Tenerife 0 By Roscoe TENERIFE manager Jose Marti would have taken a point from the trip to Cordoba before the team’s flight from the North airport last weekend. I just wonder whether he felt two points were left of the mainland when he touched down on Monday morning. There is no mystery to Cordoba. They are a hard-working team, who look to hit on the counter. They are, in fact, exactly the same as CD Tenerife. Just two points separate them, which will come as no surprise to anyone who saw this match. Yet I can’t escape the feeling that these sides are heading in different directions. Cordoba’s league position owes much to their fine start to the season, while Tenerife’s is all about this fine 10-game, unbeaten run. Cordoba’s side are packed with experience, while Tenerife’s soul is in the kids. The hosts never really troubled, apart from one moment in the second half when the alwaysexcellent Carlos Ruiz hacked the ball off the

line after Roberto let a shot slide underneath him. And when you think that there was no Dani or Raul Camara, it was an encouraging defensive display. I’m not one for statistics, as regular readers will know, but this time they told a story. Cordoba had double the number of corners but never tested Roberto. Tenerife had 56% possession, which is extremely high for a counter-attacking side away from home. If you hadn’t seen the match, this stat alone shows you that Tenerife were in charge. And they were. Javi Lara seems to get better every week. while Saul has improved so much since joining in January. Jose Marti has clearly been working on his positioning, and it shows. With Vitolo and Aitor strolling around midfield in the Cordoba sun, it was a frustrating afternoon for home boss Jose Luis Oltra. He patrolled the technical area for most of the match, barking out orders as his midfield chased shadows. The only thing missing for Tenerife was a goal. And for that we have to point the finger at referee David Perez and his assis-
tant, Moises Mateo. A well-struck Tenerife free-kick was floated into the box and Choco Lozano and Carlos Ruiz were on it. The home defence was caught napping as the Tenerife lads leapt. Home keeper Razah Brimah was half-a-yard behind where he should have been, but he is a big lump. He just got there in time but somehow managed to punch the bottom of the ball. This caused a backspin, and he was howling as the ball hit the turf and raced into the net. He had his arm up and was the most relieved man in Cordoba when the ref blew the whistle and pointed at where he had been. The Tenerife players couldn’t believe it. It was never a foul and, stunningly, the officials agreed. A look to the sidelines saw Mateo’s flag raised. A Tenerife man was offside. There was just one problem: they were all about a yard onside! As the screengrab picture on this page shows, it was a shocker. Tellingly, Cordoba centre-back Hector Rodas gave Razak the filthiest of looks as the Ghanaian went to grab the ball. Rodas knew his keeper had gotten away with a major faux pas.
They say that these decisions even themselves out over the course of a season. Believe me that is utter rubbish. I discovered this in my Direct Telecom Pool League singles’ match last Tuesday (see page 52). Sure, Tenerife did have one go their way against Lugo a few weeks back when Suso was about 50 miles offside. But on the
whole, Tenerife don’t get the rub of the green in my opinion. Make no mistake, it would have been the winning goal because Cordoba didn’t look like the sort of side who had the character to go out and find an equaliser. It cost Tenerife two points, and we will find out in June whether that makes any difference. So Tenerife remain in 12th place and remain three points away from the play-off places. As I mentioned last week it will take a few weeks to get where they want to be, even if they win
Position
this week and next. There are eight sides in the mix, and they all won’t lose. But they will play each other. Alcorcon host Osasuna, Cordoba go to Real Oviedo and Tenerife make the trip to Girona. Montilivi holds such contrasting memories. Of course, it is where Dani Kome scored the goal that got us up all those years ago. But it was also where we suffered a humiliating 4-2 defeat barely 16 months later. It was Gonzalo Arconada’s first match in charge … he and the team never recovered.

Oasis Fm Fantasy League
Frank keeps Fat Lady quiet WE are now in the final straight and heading for the finishing line of our Fantasy League. Last weekend saw just six games played because of FA Cup semifinals. And, looking at the scores, it would seem that some of our managers were caught out and had too many players who didn’t feature. Were you one of them? There were some highscoring games, which is reflected in the pointscoring team of the week with Leicester,
Man City, Chelsea and Southampton all contributing two players each. The rest came from Sunderland, Liverpool and surprisingly Aston Villa. Player of the week was Man City’s Kelechi Iheanacho (16), who will surely expect more game-time next season. In the Oasis Fm Fantasy League, the top four stayed put, and it is looking more than likely that Frank Devaney will stay out in front. But, as they say, it ain’t over un-
til the fat lady sings … and she is now starting to warm-up! We did have a couple of climbers in the top10. Elodie Townsend’s Deedees Hotspurs moved up to fifth, and Roscoe’s Wanderers, after breaking into the top-10 last week, moved one rung higher. Can Roscoe climb even higher, though, because he’s just 22 points off the top five? In a week that saw Leicester take another step closer to the title, the Oasis Fm team of
the week went to the A.C. Filberts, managed by Kev Heggs, a perennial Leicester fan. They picked up 72 points, a large chunk of them coming from Eden Hazard (30), who scored his first two league goals of the season. Kev also had Riyad Mahrez (9) of Leicester to thank as well, in a weekend that actually saw Mahrez take the PFA player of the year crown … from Hazard! With one or two teams already on the beach and cruising to the end
of the league, pick your players carefully now
if you want to improve your position.

By Adi Benson THE title race could be all over this weekend, but there are still a few teams at the top and bottom who should be looking over their shoulders. Champions League places are still up for grabs, and relegation still haunts at least four clubs.
Everton v Bournemouth
Everton will be glad to put this season behind them because it fizzled out with their FA Cup semi-final defeat. They could still finish in the top half of the table, but that will be a big ask. New investment is coming into the club in the summer, and I would expect a new manager as well because the fans want Martinez out. Bournemouth look like a team already on the beach after reaching the 41-point mark three games ago. But it is unfair to the fans to finish the season seemingly uninterested, and I’m sure Eddie Howe will be hammering this home to his players. Prediction: Draw Last season: N/A
Newcastle v Crystal Palace
The Rafa affect is starting to kick in at Newcastle because they have now gone three games without defeat. And they will have taken confidence from a 2-2 draw at Liverpool, having come from two firsthalf goals behind. They look more organised as a team, and Benitez seems to have been able to motivate them into putting in fighting performances. Palace have a cup final to look forward to, but still need to pay attention to their league position because they’re just eight points above the relegation zone,
29th April - 5th May 2016
Bournemouth beach boys...
from the title but they need to remain calm. They have come this far and will now be all about composure. They are capable of beating United, but they need to concentrate and not get carried away. This is where Ranieri will really earn his money. Prediction: Home win Last season: 3-1
Southampton v Man City with Norwich and Sunderland both having games in hand on them. They need a win here to ensure they are safe for another season. Prediction: Home win Last season: 3-3
Stoke v Sunderland
Stoke, another club cruising to the end of the season, have failed to pick up a single points in their last three games and have suffered some heavy defeats. Their position is probably safe in the top half of the table, but you don’t want to see teams coasting, especially as this is an important relegation game. Sunderland are the inform team in terms of points gained in the last 10 games, and they will see this as another match in which to add to their current tally. Big Sam, who has been here before, is rallying his troops well. They have climbed out of the bottom three, just! But there are still four big games to go and it is in their hands now. Prediction: Draw Last season: 2-0
Watford v Aston Villa
Watford will look back and be happy enough with their season because they avoided a relegation fight and reached the FA Cup semi-finals. But had the goals not dried up for them in recent weeks, it could have been so much better. Next season will be a big test as they strengthen during the summer.
Aston Villa, as we know, are down and out and will be playing Championship football next season. It would be nice to see them finish with a win after so many barren weeks, but they just don’t look capable. Unless something drastic happens at the club, it may be League One football the season after next. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A
West Brom v West Ham
West Brom put in a battling performance against Spurs to earn a point and, potentially, hand the League title to Leicester. They are still jostling about for position in the table and will want to finish as high as possible. Top half of the table is probably beyond them, but 11th is achievable. West Ham, still in with a slim chance of finishing fourth, haven’t lost in nine games. But four draws in the last five have been costly in terms of points. Bilic has had an excellent first season and, with the right summer investment, the Hammers could be challenging for trophies next season. They have a huge step to make, though, to the Olympic Stadium! Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-2
Arsenal v Norwich
Arsenal extinguished their title hopes last weekend with a draw against Sunderland
from 2-0 up, and they are still in danger of losing out on fourth spot to Man Utd. This should be a routine win, but their upcoming game against Man City will be huge, and they can’t afford to drop these points. Norwich will need some performance to take anything from this, but they need a result, especially as Sunderland and Newcastle both have winnable games this weekend. They have slipped back into the bottom three and could lose more ground if they can’t conjure up a point or three against the Gunners. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A
Swansea v Liverpool
Swansea are another team looking over their shoulders towards the relegation zone, and even though 40 points normally guarantees safety, it looks as though 41 or 42 points will be needed this season just to be sure. They were
comfortably beaten by Leicester and will be looking to bounce back. Liverpool were at their inconsistent best against Newcastle, with yet another goal-keeping mistake leading to a goal. You feel their attention is now focused on the Europa League because it gives them a trophy chance. More importantly, a place in next season’s Champions League is also on offer. Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-1
Man Utd v Leicester
United will be on their toes because they surely won’t want Leicester to win the league at Old Trafford. Like all fans, I reckon the United worshippers would rather it be Leicester than Spurs. But you don’t want the title celebrations on your own ground. United also need the points because they could yet finish fourth. Leicester are in dreamland, just one win away
The Saints have not had a bad season following a slow start, but they will be disappointed not to have given the teams above them more of a run for their money. They could still have a hand in how the top of the table finishes, though, and give one or two teams a nervy, final few games. Man City need to win, especially with a tricky fixture coming up against Arsenal, if they want to make sure of a top-four finish. This clash could be tricky, coming in the middle of the Champions League semi-final legs, because they may choose to rest players. It’s going to be a big call for Pellegrini, especially going to Spain on the back of a 0-0 draw with Real Madrid. Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-3
Chelsea v Spurs
Although Chelsea have not been in the title race this season, they could certainly have a big hand in it now! Leicester may have already won it if they’ve had a result against Man United. If not, a Chelsea victory would see it go to them anyway. Chelsea are also looking to better their league position, so they will be up for this game. Spurs stuttered against West Brom and it looks as though they will have to settle for second place. But it may not be over just yet and, if they need to, this will be a big game to win to stay in the hunt. They need to dust themselves down and come into this fixture brimful of confidence. Prediction: Away win Last season: 3-0

Ñandú feel just champion! ÑANDÚ Rugby Club hosted CRLP de Gran Canaria in the first-ever Under-18 Canarian League final last Saturday. And what a marvellous occasion it was as they completed their season unbeaten to become champions!
The match, held in perfect conditions at T3 in La Caleta, attracted a large, vocal crowd. And with all the respect the sport of rugby has, the day began with a minute’s silence for the Los Cristianos tragedy. It was observed impeccably by all … an extremely moving moment. And so to the match.
UNTIL recently, rugby was a barely-acknowledged sport in Tenerife. But, thanks to the huge efforts of everyone involved, Adejebased Ñandú Rugby Club are now becoming recognised. The club, in collaboration with Adeje Ayuntamiento and Tenerife Top Training (T3), have made history, hit headlines and gained notoriety over the last two years. The Ñandú boys have worked perpetually, in the spirit of the sport that is their passion. And an invitation to join the Under-16s Catalan League last season was a privilege - and one they took seriously. Coming second in the league was an amazing achievement for an under-funded, novice team, which spurred the boys on for more. This year saw the inaugural Canarian League for Under-18s, and Ñandú were unstoppable. Every spare moment they had was spent training and, as the boys have learned, hard work and perseverance will always triumph. Ñandú reached the dizzy heights of finishing top of the league, and also winning the final - an incredible achievement which, just two years ago, was beyond their wildest dreams.
Ñandú 36 CRLP (Las Palmas) 19 Las Palmas were a big, physical side and started the match strongly. Both packs battling each other in the early stages, in the rucks and set-pieces. Ñandú broke through when full-back Fran used his pace to punch over the line. The try was converted by skipper Jacob who was, as ever, consistent throughout. But Las Palmas were up for the fight, with their backs threatening the Ñandú defensive line constantly. Yet Jacob burst through and powered his way over for Ñandú’s second try, converted by Fran, after a wonderful show of strength at the breakdown from the back-row.
It gave Ñandú a 14-0 lead, but Las Palmas soon hit back, their pack bustling over for a much-deserved try, and started to pressure the home side. The second half began hard and fast, with both sides scoring, Ñandú via lightning winger Edu. The score was 19-12, but the crowd were getting nervous and louder. Outside-centre Ryan completed a superb 15-man try, taking the pass from Toby to glide over the line. Minutes later, Ryan took the ball just inside the opposition’s half, beat the defence, and stormed over for another excellent score, converted again by captain
Jacob, allowing Ñandú some breathing space at 31-12. With the crowd now enjoying the sheer effort and commitment of the players, Ñandú’s brilliant prop, Gregor, burst over the line in typical style - 36-12, and the match looked over. But it wasn’t, not quite, thanks to the character and style of Las Palmas, who mounted an excellent attack to score a stylish try to end the match. It was a wonderful, fitting match on a perfect day, and Ñandú would again like to thank T3 for their support, professionalism and worldclass facilities they continue to offer the club.
Ñandú now look forward to competing in the Under-18 National Tournament on tomorrow (Saturday) week on
mainland Spain. But at the moment, officials do not have enough money to send them. We urgently need sponsors - companies or people willing to sponsor the boys. And we can offer various advertising packages. The boys have worked so hard for this … from nothing just two years ago, we have arrived at this stage. Please contact Paul Oakenfold on 664 36 10 58 if you can support us.
Help push rugby to greater heights Not content with settling for just one trophy, the ultimate moment for them and club officials is now in sight. They are all overjoyed at being accepted to participate in the National Under-18 Tournament on mainland Spain, where the Spanish ranking positions are established. It takes place next weekend (7-8th May) in Villajoyosa, and, representing Tenerife and the entire Canary Islands, Ñandú will play against some of the best clubs in Spain. The will also be promoting the future of rugby in Tenerife, and will be a vital part of their continued commitment to the sport. As you can imagine, the team are preparing steadfastly. They have undertaken multiple fitness sessions, including gym-work and personal training regimes. Classroom work is consistent, healthy eating plans are being followed and positive mental attitude is at a peak. The team’s dedication and spirit is remarkable. What is also remark-
able is that the club are directed by a team of selfless parents, individuals and dedicated volunteers, who give their support and time freely. And the entire set-up is maintained solely through the contribution of membership fees and sponsorship. Despite the phenomenal dedication, fundraising events and a general outpouring of support from the volunteers and boys, Ñandú do not have enough money to fund this essential trip to Villajoyosa. The boys, their parents and fund-raising efforts are contributing to the costs. But to date, they have a shortfall of just below 4,500 euros. This requires urgent, remedial action, and they really do need your help! Therefore, officials are app-ealing directly for donations to take Tenerife rugby to the next level and achieve the recognition that Ñandú, the Island and the boys deserve. This fund will cover travelling expenses and transfers, flights, basic
hostel accommodation and meals. But club officials do not expect any financial gain without return. For businesses, we are providing advertising in the form of a banner, which will be produced specifically for the tournament. Also, your business details will be displayed on our website, and distributed in all match programmes and social media. If you are interested, various sponsorship packages can be provided to promote your organisation, including a promo video for your company, created by a professional editor/ producer. Imagine your name standing alongside that of the Canarian champions! Ñandú appreciate every single small, large, individual and company donation, and be assured that all the financial management is accounted for stringently by the club treasurer, with every cent monitored. If you can help, please email nandurugbytenerife@gmail.com, or contact Paul on 664 361 058.
