Los Cristianos flying high with Blue Flags Continued from Front It was a major source of embarrassment for the old regime when the region lost all their Blue Flags a couple of years ago. But new Mayor Jose Julian Mena and his team have worked hard to get the municipality back on track. And they have now been rewarded because the beaches of Los Cristianos and Las Vistas have recovered their Flags. The award recognises the effort to offer accessibility to all, and to the implementation of the rescue services, along with the speciallyadapted bathrooms. The municipality also receives a distinction as “an inclusive beach, sun and sea for all” - one of only two given in the whole of Spain. Mena said: “Not only do we recover the Blue Flags, after losing them in 2013, but also we get our work recognised in eliminating barriers. Now everyone, with or without full function, can enjoy our beaches and our coastline.” Blue Flag is an annual award, recognising environmental quality through certification, and developed by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) since 1987. The Blue Flag promotes and rewards participation in environmental initiatives of municipal authorities, local people and visitors in the tourism sector. This year, the Canary

Islands has received 50 awards for its beaches and ports, including a distinction for accessibility and care for the disabled, which went to Arona. The 50 awards are four more than in 2015. In total, 24 municipalities in the Canary Islands have been awarded the Blue Flag, which marks out the beaches and marinas that meet the criteria of excellence in the quality of bathing water. They also comply with environmental regulations, and have health infrastructure and adequate security to ensure the health and safety of users, regardless of mobility. Tenerife scooped 15 Blue Flag beaches, Gran Canaria 12, Lanzarote

Tenerife’s Blue Flag beaches

Granadilla de Abona: El Medano and La Jaquita Adeje: Troya I and 2, Torviscas, Fanabe and El Duque Arona: Las Vistas and Los Cristianos Santiago del Teide: La Arena San Cristóbal, La Laguna: Piscinas de Bajamar Los Realejos: El Socorro Puerto de la Cruz: San Telmo and Complejo Playa Jardín Guía de Isora: Playa San Juan. Tacoronte: La Arena-Mesa del Mar six, Fuerteventura six, La Palma five, and one for La Gomera. Adeje has had a longstanding tradition of winning the Blue Flag and this year, both Troya beaches were honoured, along with those at Torviscas, Fanabe and El Duque. Andres Perez Ramos, Councillor for beaches, transport, traffic and

road-safety, said: “For us in Adeje, the Blue Flag is very important as it is a guarantee of our commitment to quality beaches, ensuring that both our visitors and our residents can be assured that the beaches are safe and secure.” All municipalities can be proud of their achievements, but Aro-

na gets the big pat on the back. Mayor Mena and his team have worked hard to restore the region to former glories. And while there is a lot of work to be done, the Blue Flag awards will be a real confidence boost to Mena’s administration. Mena said: “We made a commitment to the industry and the public to recover, and we are on the right path. We want our town to continue to receive distinctions in quality and excellence. “In just one year, we have made great strides in that image to the outside world, including, for example, the renewal of our quality Q tourist information offices, and Excellencies award for our commitment to accessibility. “And all this is thanks to the hard work of our public services, technicians, municipal workers. This is good news for Arona after all these hard and sad few weeks for those in Los Cristianos and the whole municipality.” Yurena García, the Councillor for Beaches, highlighted the work of the last few months to become eligible for this recognition, and added: “The return of the international recognition of quality for our bathing areas is something we, as a region, deserve. “The problem was not in the water quality, but the lack of essential services, such were the Lifesaving and current regulations.

“Our technicians and municipal staff, and the entire municipality as a whole, have made a great effort to return to Arona something which should never have been lost.” She added: “The Las Vistas beach is one of the most-visited in Spain by the elderly and disabled, which is why we have given much importance to the company that has specialised staff and gives appropriate regard to the Disabled Person Certificate.” It’s a view shared by the Environment Councillor José Luis Gómez, who recalled: “The municipality began operating 100% on the Arona beaches from the moment we started. We have made provisions, which include adapting the bathrooms for people with mobility problems. “After nearly three years without a stable contract, the launch of the service, with all the guarantees, constituted a basic condition to recover the Blue Flags. ” The Arona rewards are part of an impressive, national haul. This year, 686 Blue Flags will fly proudly over Spanish beaches and marinas. This constitutes a world record, which sees 586 beaches and 100 marinas honoured - eight more than last year. And the Blue Flag programme is present in almost 50 countries on five continents.

Rajoy back in Election mode

ACTING Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, has launched the first defence of his Premiership as unofficial electioneering ahead of next month’s General Election begins. He pointed out in a speech that he finishes this term in office with positive figures, because 575,000 Spanish people have found work in the last 12 months. Asked to weigh up the balance of his government’s term, Rajoy referred to the data from the Labour Force Survey, published by the National Institute of Statistics and said: “Last year, 575,000 Spanish people found a job and 600,000 left the ranks of the unemployed.” He added: “These positive figures should encourage us to continue to work for the future. Employment is basic for people. It will allow us to pay for the major essential public services, such as healthcare, education and pensions.”

The PM reiterated that his goal for the next four years was “to consolidate the recovery, continue to grow and create jobs. “From the political point of view, what we need is a stable and serious government, and a return to common sense. “I believe that, in the future, we should all act with more calm and level-headedness.” Apart from this matter, Rajoy said that this acting term of office “has practically not existed - there have been no important debates”, aside from the extraordinary plenary session on 6th April. That dealt with the latest European Council meetings held in February and March, focusing on the refugee crisis and the UK’s EU membership. . Rajoy recalled: “The upshot was a rejection by the House, of the person who presented himself as a candidate … with only 90 seats.”

Jobless tally falling again THE number of unemployed people registered in the Canary Islands has fallen again, with 825 fewer people claiming unemployment benefit last month. However, it hardly puts a dent in the overall jobless total, which stands at 242,063 according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. Compared with April last year, the number of unemployed in the archipelago has been reduced by 4.71% (11,953). By provinces, unemployment in Las Palmas, fell by 486 people (0.38%), compared with March (leaving 127,165 unemployed. Tenerife capital Santa Cruz saw 339 fewer unemployed (-0.29%), the tally dropping to 114,898

jobless. Compared with the same month last year, the eastern province recorded 9,222 fewer unemployed (-6.76%). And in the western province unemployment dropped by 2,731 - an annual fall of 2.32%. Throughout the Canary Islands, there were 242,063 unemployed, of which 112,088 were men and 129,975 women. In addition, 13,507 were in the under-25 sector. As far as contracts are concerned, in April there were 58,709 new jobs - 509 fewer than in March, but 4,991 more than the same month of 2015. Meanwhile, of the new contracts taken out, 7,615 were permanent and 51,094 temporary.

Cancer Bus now has a regular Adeje stop

ADEJE Council has been working on a series of initiatives to improve the quality of life of residents in the borough.

These include workshops, therapies and a series of conferences in relation to food, relaxation techniques, and investigation and research into breast cancer, as well as help for sufferers. The programmes are the result of numerous partnerships, following a meeting with Carlota Cobo Hernández, director of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC); Brigitte Gypen, founder of the Walk for Life movement and Adeje Council’s Department of Health and Quality of Life, under Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo. “We feel it is important to concentrate on developing projects which will directly impact on the population and, above all, those who suffering from cancer or

eating disorders,” she said. “These programmes are open to all, and, in principle, what we are doing is creating an awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.” The statements were made at the latest developments regarding the Cancer Bus, bought by fund-raising efforts to help cancer patients who need transport for treatment to hospitals in the north, which now has a stop in Adeje. The Councillor added: “This transport is there for Adeje-based

cancer patients receiving non-surgical treatments, who now have a pick-up point directly from Adeje health centre.” There is also a full schedule of events for the Pink Room (in the Adeje School of Security and Co-existence, Las Nieves), the first being a workshop on nutritional education, dealing with issues of anorexia and bulimia. There will also be group-therapy sessions under the direction of the AECC next month, dealing with stress, body-image, self-esteem, sexuality, com-

munication and family. In parallel, there will be a conference dealing with breast reconstruction, which can be carried out immediately after surgery or months/ years later, depending on the patient’s preference. This conference will be given by a specialist from the University Hospital Candelaria. Already planned for July is a workshop in relaxation techniques, to help balance mind and body and control anxiety, as well as stimulating and reinforcing mental capacities and concentration.

THE First LEGO League Open European Championship (FLL OEC) has been taking place this week at Tenerife’s International Trade Fair and Congress Centre.

The event, hosted by the Cabildo and the Scientia Foundation, through the Tenerife

THE MIGHTY LEGO PROBLEM-SOLVERS

Science and Technology Park (PCTT), and the TF Innova programme, finishes tomorrow (Saturday) and has seen more than 100 teams competing from 40 countries and all the continents. They were divided into

two categories: FLL, for youngsters aged between 10-16, and Jr. FLL, for kids between six and nine. This European meeting, featuring science, technology and values, has also brought to the Island more than 200 volunteers from all over the world. They have been in

Purple haze as 500-euro goes THE 500-euro purple note, rarely seen in anyone’s pocket, will no longer be printed after this month following fears that it is being used for financing by terrorists and criminals. Mario Draghi, European Central Bank President told the committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs of the European Parliament in February. “The 500-euro banknotes are seen increasingly as an instrument of illegal activities, and we are keen to make changes.” On Wednesday, they did at a meeting of the ECB’s Governing Council. And so, from 2017, the banknotes in circulation will remain legal tender, at least until all the new series of 500euro notes have been printed. The Germans were early champions of the whopping note, which matched the value of its

5 CW

former 1,000 mark note and catered for their traditional preference of cash over electronic money. And people will probably be allowed to exchange their banknotes indefinitely. Yet a Bundesbank director disputed that scrapping the note would help tackle terrorism, warning that this could, instead, see a little bit of “freedom” die. The 500-euro note is worth more than five times the value of the largest US denomination - the $100 bill - and has been dubbed the “Bin Laden” for its alleged terrorism links

and the difficulty of finding one. Nearly one-third of the one trillion euros circulating last year was stored in 500-euro notes, ECB data showed. Yet 56% of European Union citizens have never seen one, according to a 2011 ECB survey, because the note is mainly used for hoarding cash, rather than paying. There is no official data about the use of 500 euro notes by criminals. But studies by the European Union police agency Europol, former banking executive Peter Sands and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime link it to crime, mostly citing anecdotal evidence. In a 2015 report, Europol suggested authorities should consider stopping their issue - unless they found evidence that they were being used legitimately.

charge of guiding the teams (floaters) and the evaluation of the scientific projects and the robot game (referees and judges), among other essential roles during the tournament. And over the course of their four days in Tenerife, they will have mingled with more than

1,000 people from countries such as China, Brazil, Australia, US, UK, Russia, Peru, Greece, France, Lithuania, Slovenia, South Korea or South Africa, emphasising creativity, learning to innovate and working in teams, as well as solving problems, which are the main objectives of this

initiative. Team-work values such as innovation, creativity, problemsolving and communication are the basic skills developed at the Championship. And some time tomorrow, the young participants will have solved the Trash Trek Challenge!

Water-plant setback THERE has been a setback to the recentlyannounced water infrastructure plans in Güímar, which should have been ready by the end of the year.

The industrial water treatment plant (EDAR), in the Valley of Güímar, will be delayed until at least 2018, despite urgent demands from local authorities there, as well as in Can-

delaria and Arafo. Cabildo Water Minister Manuel Martinez estimates that it will not be in service until 2018 at the earliest. “We want to get it right, so it will take as long as it takes,” said Martinez. “The institution was approved a while ago, and it seems the problem lies with a row between the local government and the plant’s operators. In fact, the delay is believed to be the result of a dispute between the Canary Islands Government and the EDAR

construction company. The Canarian Government says there is still a lack of necessary land for the works. And even when this is secured, the work will take two years, divided into two phases. The first is on improving existing infrastructure, for which the regional government has budgeted 700,000 euros this year, and 800,000 for year two. The Cabildo is trying to get this started as quickly as possible so that it won’t face sanctions by the European

Union for not treating waste-water correctly. The second stage focuses on the final expansion of the station, for which an environmental report is required. Some 12 million euros will be needed for this phase and, currently, the environmental process is being researched. Martinez specifies that the entire treatment plant project has already been sent to the regional Ministry to have its approval - one of the preliminary steps to starting the second phase.

Tourism delegates make Canary mum such a big global impact benefits down THE number of maternity benefits recorded in the Canary Islands during the first quarter of this year decreased slightly, slipping by 1.52% against last year’s figure, with 2,333 cases processed.

T E N E R I F E Tourism delegates continue to impress on the world stage. This week they pulled off another coup as it was announced that we will host the Routes Africa/Middle East trade fair, one of the most important events in the tourism world.

The pitch presentation, given by Tourism Tenerife chief Vicente Dorta, was delivered during the Routes Europe trade event. It was held in the Polish city of Krakow, which brought together more than 1,200 representatives of global major airlines and airports. Routes Africa/Middle East will be a three-day event, opening on 26th June, featuring more than 250 professionals in the airline industry with interests in the African continent. Some of the biggest airlines in the United States, Europe, Africa and the Middle East will attend, including United, Qatar, South African, Delta and Etihad. “Tenerife has just strengthened its connectivity with Madrid,

Barcelona, UK and Milan, with more frequencies and capacity - and the timing is perfect,” said Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso. “The Island “remains a safe bet for flag-carriers”. He described the announcement as “very good news,” adding: “It shows the achievements of the Tenerife delegation in Krakow, because it means more capacity and more frequencies with priority markets for the Island. This will translate into more opportunities to increase our competitiveness.” Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe said: “We have increased connections to the mainland, specifically with Madrid and Bar-

celona. Iberia Express will increase two frequencies with the capital of Spain, one from Tenerife North and one from Tenerife South. “Also, Norwegian will increase weekly flights to Madrid, from seven to 11, and four to six with Barcelona, - two routes the Norwegian airline operates from Los Rodeos. So you can see how important we are to the airline industry.” The UK connections will also be reinforced, British Airways announcing that it will operate more frequently with London, which means six connections a week. And Monarch plans to increase its capacity to 700,000 UK places for the forth-

coming summer and winter seasons. In Italy, the Meridiana company has announced that it will operate two weekly flights to Milan, which is more than ever before. “This is a market of particular interest to Tenerife, which grew last year by 28.4%, demonstrating the growing demand of our destination in a country that already has been placed as the fifth issuer of international tourists to the island,” said Bernabe. The Tenerife delegation in Poland also held more than 20 meetings with leaders from Luthansa, American Airlines, Air Canada, Westjet, British Airways, Volotea, Brussels and SAS, among others.

According to data supplied by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, the Spanish Government paid out 14.1 million euros in the Canaries, of which 12.6m corresponded to maternity and just 1.5m for paternity cases. In the whole of Spain, maternity benefits fell 3.72% in the first quar-

ter, while paternity cases dropped 2.17%. And in the first three months of the year, the Social Security department spent more than 421.2m euros for maternity and 48.8m for paternity cases. The sum of this benefit paid is interesting. Mothers get 100% of their salary, which is paid directly by the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) during their 16 weeks of maternity leave. In the event of multiple births, this can be extended by two weeks per child. By region, the largest number of processes between January and March came in Andalucía (12,214), Cataluña (11,933), Madrid (11,203) and Valencia (6,642).

Perfect plot for Del Boy! I DON’T want to go all Richard Littlejohn on you, but the “don’tdo-that” brigade have been out in force again this week.

I’ve mentioned before that I have never bought or smoked a cigarette. That said, I do have a penchant for a fine cigar. It’s the snob in me. If it’s going to be wrong, it has to be right! So occasionally, I will indulge in a fine, rather expensive Cuban cigar. You will not see any anti-smoking campaign here. And the last time I checked, smoking cigarettes was legal. So why is there a witch-hunt against those who spark up? I’m all for the ban on smoking in public places, but where is the harm of enjoying a legal product in a legal place? This week, do-gooders in California persuaded their law-makers to raise the legal age for purchasing tobacco products, from 18 to 21. Can you imagine that in the UK, or here in Tenerife? Apparently, this move

will “deter adolescents from the harmful effects of nicotine addiction”. Oh, and this includes vaping products as well. Anyone caught selling the product to a person under the age of 21 will have an onthe-spot fine of 5,000 dollars! Television shows taught us it was fun growing up in America. However, until you hit 21 you cannot drink or smoke. But you can pay taxes and sign up for an Army which will send you to Iraq. Strange country. Then there is Australia. This week, the average price of a pack of fags hit 15 quid, and it will be £23 by 2020. Again, it’s to stop youngsters from taking up the, remember, legal product. Another bonkers idea! All it will do is make the “expensive” product appear cool to skint kids, and it will also fuel the black market. If he were real, Del Boy would send Rodders off to Oz with a suitcase of hookey tabs. And to think smokers here moan at the price of ciggies!

Traffic cops out in force THERE will be a larger police presence than usual in Las Galletas over the next few weeks, and motorists can expect more stop-andsearch procedures.

After numerous complaints from neighbours and trade associations of the town, law-en-

forcement agencies will be much more visible this month. Arona Local Police and the Guardia Civil have already confirmed that they will step up the “traffic controls” on the roads there. These checkpoints will be targeting drug possessions and, worryingly, possession of firearms. They will also be stepping up checks on drivers they believe are behind the wheel without

a valid driving licence. The police will be assisted by the Guardia Civil of Las Americas and Granadilla de Abona, along with plain-clothes officers. Arona Local Police have the power, literally, to close the entrances to Las Galletas, which allows them to identify people who “interest” them. These measures were agreed at the last meeting of the Local Secu-

rity Board. According to Guardia Civil sources, these services, which will continue until the end of the month, are designed to flush out those who are causing long-term problems in the area. This is the first in what will be a summer blitz of so called hotspots. It’s understood that San Miguel, Amarilla Golf and Golf del Sur will face similar “controls”.

Fare deal for cabbies and their customers SANTA Cruz taxi drivers are getting a rare price correction because, from this week, the minimum fare is being increased 80 cents, from 2.35 to 3.15 euros.

But there is some good news for customers as the price “jump” concerns distance and how far you have to travel before the meter rises will double. This means that short trips will be costlier, but the longer ones will be cheaper. This new arrangement was proposed by the cab drivers, who hope it will establish a single rate for the taxi sector.

Public Services Councillor Damaso Arteaga said: “It’s a fair deal for everyone, and this has been agreed with industry professionals. “It’s proof that this city is committed to a transport system which supports the taxis and supports initiatives that will lead to the strength-

ening of our region.” Arteaga added: “The fares in Santa Cruz remain among the cheapest in the whole country. This new, single rate will serve to increase the benefits of professionals, by equalising the sprints with the long distance.” A Santa Cruz Town

Hall study shows that, on average, a driver makes about 20 trips a day, with 80% of them short-haul, which rarely exceed the 968 metres of the opening fare. The next price increase happens at the 979-metre mark. The remaining 20% metres are considered as ‘long journeys’ and these trips are longer than 2km. The short-haul price rise is smaller than many were expecting. That’s because the Price Index (RPI) has been much lower recently, and the transport sector has benefited since July 2013 through the significant drop in fuel prices. Other regions will also start considering their taxi tariffs before the start of the summer season.

Jobless pain in Spain OUCH! It’s not the kind of news of which the country wishes to boast, but Spain has just broken one of its more dubious records - about unemployment!

Latest statistics show that Spain has endured a jobless rate of over 20% for 66 straight months, which adds up to 5½ years. The previous record, of five years and three months, was set in the Nineties, but though the most recent quar-

terly figures, released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), show persistent joblessness, the sector has actually been recovering for nearly two years. Seasonal work has always been the classic way out of any labour

crisis in Spain, and this period is no exception. But even as the economy continues to grow, the outgoing crisis is still leaving a few headaches and sorry memories. From the time Spanish employment started flagging in 2007, and

That’s what you call a footprint! THE huge footprint of a dinosaur, which roamed the northeastern Catalonia area 230 million years ago, has been found there. And authorities maintain that it’s the best-preserved dinosaur print seen so far in the Iberian Peninsula. The reptile-like creature, called an Isochirotherium, is an ancestor of dinosaurs and crocodiles. Its print was discovered early last month by a

person out walking in Olesa de Montserrat, 40km north of Barcelona. The acting Spanish Government said in a statement that a plaster cast of the print was made by the town’s council and handed over to the region’s archaeology and palaeontology department “to be studied and preserved”. The statement added: “The conservation status is exceptional and retains details of claws and skin.”

the moment it hit rockbottom in early 2014, one of every five jobs was wiped out, representing nearly four million positions. In early 2013, the jobless rate soared to around 27% and, from January to March, more than 6.2 million people were redundant. Yet the INE’s current figures aren’t that disturbing because, though jobless claims grew and employment fell, it’s a fact that the first quarter of a year is always bad for jobs. And the larger trend points to a recovery. The 18 million jobs or so registered in the first quarter of 2016 represent an annual increase of 3.3% - the fastest pace recorded in years. And the 4.8 million unemployed represent a drop of 12%. Seasonally-adjusted figures also show that the activity rate grew 0.87% in the first quarter. But economist José Ignacio Conde-Ruiz said: “If job creation

picks up, as it is doing, while the economy slows down, it proves that the productivity of the jobs being created is very low. They are bad jobs. The model is heading to what it always has been.” The evolution of temporary work in the last year appears to confirm this statement. In the last 13 months, there was a 10% increase in temporary work, from 3.4m up to 3.7m. The temporary employment rate is now 25%, nearly 1.5% higher than in the same 2016 period. But the fact that seasonal work remains so strong two years later shows that employers still don’t have confidence in the future to hire permanent workers. Other indicators outline the situation perfectly. Between January and March, 719,100 households were without any kind of income, and there were 1,610,900 homes in which no member of the family had a job.

Population still dwindling as Spaniards go overseas THE population of Spain continues to shrink, and there is a perfectly good reason: increasing numbers of natives are moving abroad, and there are fewer foreign residents.

On 1st January this year, there were 99,439 fewer residents in Spain than a year earlier, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE) preliminary figures. The registered resident population of Spain is currently 46.5 million, which is a 0.2% decrease in the annual rate - slight, admittedly, but telling. A n d ,

for the first time since the Thirties, Spain recorded more deaths than births in the first six months of last year. This trend, which is expected to continue, will play an increasinglylarge role in dwindling population figures. The INE preliminary figures are based on local resident reg-

istration, known as the municipal padrón. Councils send in regular, updated figures to the stats company. These latest numbers confirm a downward trend, which began in 2012 when the economic crisis was in full swing. Foreigners, who represent 9.9% of the registered population, fell by 128,372 individuals. Of these,

Bull-ring shame leads to attack on activists FOUR people were arrested by police at a bullrun festival in the Catalonia region after attacking two animal-rights activists who tried to video the event.

AnimaNaturalis, an animal-rights group, said in a statement that director Aida Gascon and colleague Yasmina Moreno had been pounced on and attacked in the town of Mas de Barberans. They had planned to video a “correbou”, in which bulls are set loose in a ring with flaming balls of tar or wax attached to their horns. A police official said

three men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of assault and damaging property. National TV channel La Sexta broadcast a video showing the women being attacked and stripped of their camera. In the melee, one man was seen climbing from the bullring

into the stands, while other crowd members approached from the sides. Eventually, one man was seen hurling the camera forcefully to the ground. Cheers and clapping erupted from onlookers as the camera smashed into the bullring’s raked sand. Ms Gascon said in a

statement from AnimaNaturalis: “We have attended these festivities for the past five years, just to monitor their compliance with the law, but we had never suffered such violence.” But she was adamant the attack would not deter her from documenting future correbou events.

the main nationalities were Ecuador, Britain and Germany. The INE says that around 123,000 foreign nationals were granted Spanish citizenship last year. This downward flow increases with the number of Spaniards moving away in search of better job opportunities. Since 2009, there has been a 56.6% rise in the number of Spanish citizens living abroad. There are now 4.6m registered foreigners living in Spain, of whom nearly 1.8m are European Union cit-

izens. The largest communities are Romanian, British and Italian. Moroccans make up the largest non-EU group in Spain, followed by the Chinese and the Ecuadorians. Statistics show that the most-heavily-populated regions of Spain are Andalusia, Catalonia, Madrid and the Valencia region. At the other end of the scale, La Rioja, Cantabria and Navarre are still the country’s mostsparsely-populated areas. There were population declines across all regions last year, except in Madrid, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.

Our ‘boom-time’ summer EVERY man and his dog predicts a booming summer, and travel agencies have now added their predictions to the mix.

They suggest that clients wishing to travel to the Canaries this summer should book their accommodation well in advance. That’s because the agencies believe the islands can be almost “completely full” this year, and facing “saturation”. Rafael Gallego, Spanish Federation of Travel Agencies (FEAAV) President, said some destinations, such as the Balearic Islands and the Costa del Sol, “are already full to the brim, so this year we will have to divert tourists to the

Canaries, where there are many more beds. But how long will these beds be available?” According to Gallego, there will be “sold-out” signs everywhere, and he adds that “the fullness of other destinations will cause the Canary Islands to have a very high demand from this month and, therefore, the best prices and areas will be gone quicker.” Gallego also recommended that any Canarians planning to stay in the islands for their holidays must get their act together “very quickly”. He added: “At the last minute, they could find themselves surprised that they can’t find beds where they want to go, or what remains isn’t what they can pay because the price has gone up.”

Roman treasure trove is dug up near Seville ANCIENT Roman coins, worth an absolute fortune, have been unearthed by builders carrying out routine work on water pipes in southern Spain.

They discovered the stunning, bronze haul, dating back to the late third and early fourth centuries and weighing 600kg (1,300lb) inside 19 Roman amphoras, a type of vase, in Tomares, a town near Seville. Ana Navarro, head of Seville’s archaeology museum, which is looking after the find, said: “It is a unique collection and there are few similar cases.” Navarro declined to

put a precise estimate on their value of the haul, saying only that the coins were “certainly worth several million euros”. They are stamped with the inscriptions of Emperors Maximian and Constantine, and do not appear to have been in circulation because there is little evidence of wear and tear. It is thought that

they were intended to pay the Roman army, or, perhaps, civil servants. Navarro added: “The majority were newlyminted, and some of them probably were bathed in silver, and not just bronze. “I could not give you their economic worth because the value they

really have is historical, and you can’t calculate that.” Local officials, who have suspended work on the water pipes, plan to carry out an archaeological excavation on the site. The Romans conquered the Iberian Peninsula in 218 BC, ruling until the early fifth century, when they were ousted by the Visigoths.

High Barcelona rents THE cost of renting homes in Spain has risen by 4.3% in the first quarter of 2016, which represents a year-onyear increase of 5.2%. And property portal idealista.com says the average monthly price

per square-metre has gone up to 7.40 euros. Barcelona is the most expensive monthly rental province, with homes at 12.60sq/m, followed by Madrid (11.5 euros) while Jaen is the cheapest at 3.7 euros.

Golfing tourists are par for our courses GOLF tourism has long provided a boost to the Island’s fortunes, and 2015 was no different because the sport attracted more than 100,000 players here.

This sector is highly profitable as travellers spend an average of 1,550 euros per person, which is 37% more than other visitors. And last year, golfers left 131 million euros in Tenerife. The numbers are equally positive in green-fee sales, which increased 3.8% over last year to a total of 310,000, compared with 299,000 the previous year. There are nine cours-

es as part of the Tenerife Golf brand - eight on the Island and one in La Gomera. They all offer something a little different, from accommodation to entertainment and different challenges for golfers. Cabildo Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe says they are noted for their spending on sports, restaurants and car-hire. “The 131 million euros spent by these tourists in 2015 accounted for 3.2% of revenues for the tourism spending,” adds Bernabe. “It’s a big sector.” Regarding the golfers’ accommodation, more than half (59.2%) stayed in hotels, notably five-star establishments, where 29% made themselves at home.

They’ve all been Trumped! D O N A L D Trump has become the US Republican presidential nominee in all but name after his Indiana victory forced rival Ted Cruz out of the race.

It would mark a stunning victory for the billionaire businessman, who was taken less than seriously when he launched his campaign last year. He was seen as a wealthy “clown” by many, but he has earned tremendous support in recent weeks. True, he trails Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton in the all-important delegate count. But this success gives

him the belief that the contest is still alive, and he insists: “Clinton campaign think this campaign is over. They’re wrong.” The Cruz advisers had targeted Indiana as the Texas senator’s best hope of halting Mr Trump’s march to the nomination. But Cruz told supporters there: “We gave it everything we’ve got, but the voters chose another path. With a heavy heart, but with boundless optimism we are suspending our campaign.” Cruz and the #NeverTrump movement threw everything they had at Donald Trump in Indiana, and it wasn’t enough … it wasn’t even close to enough. Desperate men take desperate measures, and his

campaign outspent Trump by more than a million dollars. Cruz practically took up residence in the state in the past two weeks. But nothing worked. His departure means that Trump is now the presumptive Republican nominee, with plenty of state contests over the next two months to reach the 1,237 delegates he needs to get over the line. The New York businessman is the first nominee since Dwight Eisenhower, in 1952, to lack any previous experience of elected office. Ohio Governor John Kasich has vowed to remain in the Republican race, but he trails far behind Mr Trump in terms of delegates. If there were a defining moment of the

Indiana campaign, it was Cruz’s fruitless attempt to reason with a group of proTrump supporters on Sunday. Every argument he advanced was rebuffed. Every bit of evidence of Trump’s allegedly illegal practices was denied. Cruz was shouting in the wind. In the coming days, there will be a great reckoning, as the party comes to terms with the prospect of Trump as their standard-bearer in the autumn. Some will make peace, some will despair. Others will say, “I’m with her”, and move to Hillary Clinton’s side reluctantly. It is building up to be an unprecedented spectacle in modern US political history.

High-way robbery as traveller loses small fortune

AN airline passenger has fallen foul of a blossoming gang scam, losing £175,530 in cash and valuables from his hand-luggage during a flight into Hong Kong.

The police there said that early on Monday, a 39-year-old foreigner alerted Emirates staff, who then called the authorities. Police said he had lost two watches and foreign currency, while local media added that he was a Turkish watch merchant, flying economy-class from Dubai. Reports have increased about global mid-air thefts, some of which are said to involve organised gangs. A spokesperson for Emirates told the BBC: “Emirates is working closely with the police department and providing information to assist with their investigation.” Emirates said it would not comment further because of the ongoing investigation.

Palmerston’s purrfect start PALMERSTON has got his teeth into the new job he accepted at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as “chief mouser” with a catch during his first month. The black-and-white moggie, rescued from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, was praised on Twitter by Sir Simon McDonald, permanent under-secretary to the Foreign Office, after pouncing on his first mouse! Just a week ago, the new South Korean Ambassador asked to be photographed with the FCO’s new hero. And the Spanish ambassador also requested a meeting on a recent visit there. And Palmerston, on becoming a member of Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service, is now a colleague of Larry the Cat, chief mouser to the Cabinet Office and No 10!

Frozen climbers are found, after 16 years

THE bodies of two American climbers, who perished in a huge avalanche in the Himalayas 16 years ago, have been found.

Alex Lowe, a worldrenowned mountaineer, had been climbing the 8,013m (26,290ft) Shishapangma peak in Tibet in October 1999 with cameraman David Bridges when they were hit. They were found last week, still trapped in the ice, by two climbers, and Mr Lowe’s wife, Jennifer LoweAnker, said they had been “frozen in time”. Mr Lowe, 40, considered one of the greatest mountain climbers of his generation, was well known in that community for having rescued several

other climbers. He and Mr Bridges, 29, close friends and climbing partners, had been scouting a route up Shishapangma, the 14th-highest mountain in the world. The discovery of their bodies was announced on Friday by Mrs Lowe-Anker, who now runs a charitable foundation in her late partner’s name with her husband, Conrad Anker. He had been on Shishapangma with the two climbers on that tragic day, but escaped with minor injuries. He and other climbers spent days searching for the missing pair. He married Alex Lowe’s widow in 2001 and adopted her three sons with the mountaineer. The couple were in Nepal with their charity last week when they

received a call from climbers David Goettler and Ueli Steck, saying they had found two bodies “still encased in blue ice but beginning to emerge from the glacier”, said Mrs Lowe-Anker. The climbers described the clothing

and equipment to Mr Anker, who confirmed it was “undoubtedly” the missing pair. Mr Anker told Outside magazine that it was “fitting” the men were found by climbers. “It wasn’t a yak herder, it wasn’t a trekker,” he said. “David

and Ueli are both cut from the same cloth as Alex and me.” The bodies are now expected to be recovered from the mountain and, said Mr Anker: “The discovery brings closure and relief for me and Jenni and for our family.”

SCIENTISTS in Brazil now believe that the mosquito -borne Zika virus may be even more dangerous than previously thought, and, worryingly, the search for a vaccine is still in the early stages.

They have told the BBC that Zika could be behind more damaging, neurological conditions, affecting the babies of up to one-fifth of infected, pregnant women. Rates of increase in Zika infection in some parts of Brazil have slowed, thanks to better information about preventing the disease. But there’s still no sign of a vaccine, no sign of a cure, as Zika continues to spread across the region. Most doctors and medical researchers now agree that there is a link between the Zika virus and microcephaly, where babies are born with abnormally-small heads because of restricted brain development. While it is estimated that 1% of women who have had Zika during pregnancy will have a child with microcephaly, leading doctors in Brazil have told the BBC that as many as 20% of Zika-affected pregnancies will result in a range

6th May - 12th May 2016

Hunt for vaccine still goes on - and Zika is even more dangerous

of other forms of brain damage to the baby in the womb. A separate study, reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, said: “Some 29% of scans showed abnormalities in babies in the womb, including growth restrictions, in women infected with Zika. “Our findings are worrisome because 29% of ultra-sonograms showed abnormalities, including intra-uterine growth restrictions and foetal death, in women with positive Zika infection.” A rare nervous system disorder, GuillainBarre syndrome, that can cause temporary paralysis, has also been linked to the infection. Because there is no vaccine or drug treatment, patients are advised to rest and drink plenty of fluids. But the biggest concern is the impact it could have on babies developing in the womb. Many of the conditions noticed by the Brazilian doctors, in babies born to mothers who had Zika, are not as obvious to the untrained eye as micro-

cephaly. They may not have the same impact on the child’s development, either, but the frequency with which they are occurring is alarming. Doctor Renato Sa, a senior obstetrician working in both public and private hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, said there was a long list of other conditions affecting babies born to mothers who had Zika. “There are cerebral calcifications, an increase in the number of dilation of cerebral ventricles and the destruction or malformation of the posterior part of the brain,” he added.

Islamist recruiters used online outlets

FOUR people, arrested in the Madrid region on Tuesday on charges of jihadist activity, delivered their message to hundreds of people, then selected much smaller groups for a more intense and direct radicalisation programme. The suspects - three Moroccan nationals, and a man with Spanish citizenship - were detained by Guardia Civil officers in Pinto and Ciempozuelos, outside the capital. They were accused of leading an organised group, using online tools to recruit people for the Islamist cause. The suspects were said to have exerted

great personal control over their targets, telling them how to perform nearly every activity in their everyday lives Investigators found that a stable structure was being used to publish and distribute propaganda, praising jihadist terrorism through web platforms and instant-messaging applications. Civil Guard investigators are also searching premises in Pinto, Ciempozuelos and Madrid city to learn more about the way the group worked. The operation is being overseen by the High Court, Spain’s central criminal tribunal.

The Interior Ministry noted that recruiting and indoctrination networks are the main source of human capital for terrorist groups, especially in European countries where secure online communications make it easy to disseminate propaganda and keep in touch with militants in combat zones. These logistics structures can also be used to prepare attacks on European soil. Ever since Spain’s alert level was raised to 4 on 26th June, 2015, the Civil Guard has ramped up investigations into jihadist propaganda and recruitment structures.

The list of conditions he and his colleagues are now witnessing with increasing regularity stretches on, and Doctor Sa said an added concern was that often no obvious sign or symptom of the neurological damage until later observations of the child’s development - “perhaps convulsions or other telltale signs”.

At Rio’s Instituto D’Or laboratories, they are using stem-cell technology to create new cells that develop like human brains. And scientists there are researching the effects of Zika on brain tissue. They call them “mini brains” and infect them with Zika, and, said Dr Stevens Rehen, the unit’s senior neuroscientist: “What we observed is that the Zika virus is able to kill cells, and is able to affect the growth of cells,” Dr Rehen has noted, as have others, that there is something particularly virulent about the strain of Zika, which arrived in Brazil and is spreading across the continent. “There is something in the Zika virus that makes it more prone to kill neurocells during development,” he said. “Now, we need to

search and understand what makes that virus more aggressive to the brain under development.” The team was shocked by what it discovered: - a huge reduction in growth of the cerebral cortex, the critical outer layer of the brain. In a change to earlier patterns, the areas of greatest infection for Zika are now in the south of the country, particularly in Rio de Janeiro, where this summer’s Olympic Games will be staged. But among some sectors of society, public information campaigns about the need for using anti-mosquito repellent and taking other precautions, all appear to be having a positive impact. Dr Sa said the number of Zika cases among middle-class pregnant women had fallen sharply, as had cases of microcephaly and other related conditions. But he the disappointing reality, he said, was that such progress was not apparent in the city’s poor, workingclass neighbourhoods, such as Duque de Caxias, in the north of Rio.

Gibraltar runway’s a flightpath to trouble EUROPEAN Union transport ministers are being asked to help settle a dispute between Britain and Spain over Gibraltar’s airport.

It appears to be threatening proposals to smooth travel across the bloc, and aviation industry leaders want it settled once and for all. The dispute over whether the territory’s airport should be included in EU legislation on aviation could paralyse a shake-up of European airspace. And it has blocked progress on such matters as passenger rights to groundhandling liberalisation. The airport’s runway crosses the only road connecting Spain to Gibraltar, which is a British overseas territory. Spain claims the whole of Gibraltar, but it views the narrow strip of land,

connecting the two larger land-masses and containing its airport, as a distinct issue. Madrid argues that it was not included in the treaty ceding Gibraltar to Britain three centuries ago, and so has always been Spanish territory. Representatives of airlines, airports, trafficcontrollers and planemanufacturers have written to ministers of both countries and the Netherlands, which chairs EU meetings, protesting at the damage to a sector caused by the dispute. They want EU transport ministers to discuss the four-year-old impasse at a meeting on 7th June. The heads of 10 industry groups said in a letter: “Unfortunately, and unacceptably, this deadlock has led to major delays in advancing some of the most important European air transport files, to the detriment of consum-

ers. The industry believes this situation has now become unsustainable.” Britain, which backed their complaint, responded by accusing Spain of breaking a 2006 agreement to co-operate. Britain and Spain cannot agree on whether the airport should be covered by EU aviation laws. And until that dispute is resolved, no progress is possible on EU aviation reforms. “It is regrettable that since 2012, Spain has chosen to ignore its own commitments, which had included removing its objection to the inclusion of Gibraltar airport in EU aviation legislation,” British Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin told aviation bosses. But a Spanish transport ministry official countered, saying: “Spain has always been ready to find a neutral solution to the problem.”

Cashpoint parents! IT’S known, mockingly, as the “Bank of Mum and Dad” and its customers are the offspring, who need their parents’ money desperately if they are ever to get on the property ladder.

In fact, parents will pump £5bn into mortgages to help their kids this year, according to a report, which pits the weak growth of wages against soaring house prices. Legal & General (L&G) believes that parental aid will help finance 25% of UK mortgage transactions - making mums and dads a “top-ten” lender.

The financial services firm estimated they would provide deposits for more than 300,000 mortgages, purchasing homes worth £77bn. But the report warned that relying on parental support might soon be unsustainable because parents could be giving away more than they can afford. A separate study, by the National Institute for Economic and Social Research (NIESR), also identified risks to pensions and savings from the housing market. The FT reported that it said rising house prices were diverting investment in retirement, with purchasers using a mortgage receiving about 15% less pension income than those who do not, on average. L&G pointed to the

disparity between wage growth and house prices - with the latest official figures showing average annual pay rises of around 2% at a time of house-price increases of 7.6%. Its report said parental contributions already made up more than 50% of the wealth of the average household in London, excluding property. It described that scenario as a “tipping point”, adding: “Families clearly cannot continue to use all their net wealth to help their offspring on to the housing ladder without putting their own financial stability at risk.” Nigel Wilson, the company’s chief executive, said: “The generosity being displayed by UK families doesn’t make up for inter-generational unfairness. Younger people today don’t have the advantages the babyboomers had, including cheap housing that delivered windfall gains.” He added: “We have a supply-side problem in housing. We are simply not building enough houses. We need to build more, especially as the Bank of Mum and Dad could soon start to experience a funding crisis of its own.”

Employers mistreat their pregnant staff PREGNANT women and new mothers in the workplace are being discriminated against even more these days, and some are put on zero hours contracts or even forced out of their jobs. The Citizens Advice charity has seen a 25% increase in the number of people asking for advice on pregnancy and maternity issues in the past year, with more than 22,000 visits to its website. One woman asked the charity for help after her employer cut her weekly hours by more than half after telling him she was pregnant. But though her boss claimed there was simply not enough work available, he had also

been taking on new staff. Another woman had her contract ended while she was on maternity leave, only finding out after she contacted her employer to ask why she had received no maternity pay. Citizens Advice chief executive Gillian Guy said: “Pregnant women should be supported at work, and not made to fear for their livelihood. “It is concerning that more and more new and expectant mums are experiencing discrimination issues at work. “People with a baby on the way will have a lot on their minds already. And the last thing they need is a threat to their income or job security.”

She added; “All employers should respect and uphold the rights of staff who are new parents, or expecting a baby.” A Government spokesman said that discrimination was “unlawful and completely unacceptable”, adding: “Attracting and retaining female talent is crucial to economic growth. “And, as well as being against the law, it does not make business sense for employers to alienate and discriminate against women in their workforce. “We are determined to stand up for all workers, and we’re taking action to tackle discrimination at work against pregnant women and parents.”

Here’s a good tip bosses won’t like R E S TA U R A N T management will soon be forced to hand over every penny in tips to their staff - and they will also be prevented from adding service charges to bills if the British Government has its way.

Ministers, in a damning report, are adamant that tips left by customers should go to workers in full - and not to their employers. Restaurants and bars could also be stopped from adding service charges to bills to remind customers that they do not have to tip if they don’t want to. The eight-month review of tipping practices follows claims that some “well-known” chains count the tips as part of a worker’s pay and were, thus, withholding some or all of the money. But the Government has now announced a consultation on the proposals, which include: *Updating the current voluntary code of practice and putting it on a

statutory footing to increase employer-compliance *Increasing transparency for consumers to make it clearer that tips are discretionary *Preventing or limiting any employer-deduction from tips, except for those required under tax law. Business Secretary Sajid Javid said: “As a onenation Government, we want workers who earn a tip to be able to keep it. That’s why I, like many others, was disappointed by the tipping practices of some of our well-known chains. This has to change.” He added. “I’m setting out our proposals to make tipping fairer, clamping down on unfair practices and securing a better deal for the millions of workers in the service industry. “We will look closely at all the options, including legislation if necessary.” A call for evidence received nearly 200 responses, and there was broad agreement that current practices were not clear for workers or consumers, and that change was needed to understand better how tips were distributed. Dave Turnbull, the

Unite union’s officer for the hospitality sector, said: This is fantastic news. It is a massive victory for all those waiting staff who have worked tirelessly to expose sharp practices in the hospitality industry. “All they want is what any worker wants - to take home what they have earned, and no corners cut. “This should be great news for consumers, too, who have been appalled to learn that the tips they left for their waiter or waitress never made it to them. “Diners have been a huge support to the workforce and, without their help, we may not ever have won pay justice.” Mr Turnbull added: “The problem has always been that tips paid on a credit card, and service charges, are deemed the property of the employer. As they own them, they can do what they like with them. “Until staff are recognised as the lawful owners of their hardearned tips, with complete control over how they are shared out, rogue employers will continue to cream off staff tips.”

Eurovision row over banned Basque flag SPAIN was seething at the Eurovision Song Contest’s inclusion of the Basque regional flag on a list of prohibited banners during the event, alongside the Islamic State group flag. Acting Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria told reporters: “It is a constitutional, legal and legitimate flag, and the Spanish Government will defend it whenever needed.” Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo contacted Spain’s Ambassador in Sweden, “so that he could immediately tell the organisation that it is a constitutional flag and cannot be in that list”. Organisers of the hugely-popular contest, which takes place on Saturday week (14th May) in Stockholm, apologised for what they said was a mix-up. Eurovision spokesman Dave Goodman

said a draft version of the flag policy was published by mistake on the website of the venue and the ticket agency selling seats for the annual event. “The document included a non-exhaustive list of examples of flags that, under the flag policy, are prohibited in the venue,” he added. “This document was not intended to be published. The organisers apologise to everyone who feels offended by the list.” Under Eurovision rules, regional flags, such as the red, white and green one of Spain’s northern Basque region, or those belonging to federated states, or including commercial, religious or political messages, are all banned. The authorised ones are the flags of countries participating in the contest and any other UN member

state, as well as the EU and rainbow banner that represents the LGBT movement or peace. Spokesman Mr Goodman said: “The flag policy is not aimed against specific territories or organisations, and certainly does not compare them with each other.” Eurovision’s list of banned flags includes the Islamic State militant group flag. The annual musical shindig, now in its 61st year, features acts ranging from the brilliant to the bizarre and attracts a huge global TV audience of around 200 million. It has featured some outlandish performers since its inception in 1956, including Russian grannies, Ireland’s Dustin the Turkey and the 2006 winners, Finnish heavy metal outfit Lordi, who looked like orcs, from Lord of the Rings!

‘Campiest’ Eurovision Contest now in the US Canaries flying high THE Canary Islands became the main destination for international tourists in March, with 27% of the nation’s travellers coming here, followed by Cataluña (22.6) and Andalusia (14.3). According to Frontier Tourist Movement Statistics (Frontur), Spain received more than 4.8m international tourists in March - 16.1% more

than in the same month last year. There were 1,304,901 arrivals in the Canaries, which amounted to 18.5% more than in March 2015. And Britain (33.4%) and Germany (20.3%) provided over half that total. Tourist numbers also grew in other communities: 46.5% in the Baleares, 24.5% in the

Valencia region and 2.1% in Madrid, all compared with the same month last year. In the first quarter of 2016, the Canaries led the way with 3,467,214 visitors and a 9.8% yearon-year increase. In second place again was Cataluña with 2,762,461 (+8.3%) and Andalusia, 1,696,202 (+22.5%).

THE Eurovision Song Contest final will be broadcast live on American TV for the first time next Saturday (14th May).

A deal has been reached between the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Viacom-owned cable network Logo to air the event. Eurovision executive Jon Ola Sand said he was “thrilled the final would be broadcast live in one of the biggest TV

markets for the very first time.” The 61st Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Stockholm from 10-14th May. The Swedish capital previously played host to the event in 1975 and 2000. This year’s event features entries from 42 countries - the largest number of competitors since 2011. And there will be two semi-finals, on 10th and 12th May. Logo, launched in 2012, is available in nearly 50 million homes. Its range of lifestyle programming is primarily aimed at les-

bian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) viewers. The website describes Eurovision as “the biggest, boldest, campiest music competition on earth”. The final will also be streamed in the US on the network’s website and mobile app. “We are extremely happy that US viewers now get to join those all over Europe, Australia and Asia in experiencing the grand final of the world’s longestrunning, annual TV music competition,” added Mr Sand.

Huge crumb of comfort ITALY’S highest court of appeal has ruled that stealing small portions of food to stave off hunger is, basically, not a criminal offence.

Judges actually overturned a theft conviction against Roman Ostriakov, who stole cheese and sausages worth 4.07 euros from a supermarket. Mr Ostriakov, a homeless man of Ukrainian background, had taken the food “in the face of the immediate and essential need for nourishment”, said the court of cassation. Therefore, it was not a crime! A fellow customer informed the store’s security in 2011, when Mr Ostriakov attempted to leave a Genoa supermarket with two pieces of cheese and a packet of sausages in his pocket, paying

for breadsticks only. In 2015, Mr Ostriakov was convicted of theft and sentenced to six months in jail, with a 100-euro fine. For the judges, the “right to survival prevails over property”, said an opinionated article in La Stampa newspaper (in Italian).

In times of economic hardship, the court of cassation’s judgement “reminds everyone that, in a civilised country, not even the worst of men should starve”. An opinion piece in Corriere Della Sera says statistics suggest 615 people are added to

the ranks of the poor in Italy every day - and that it was “unthinkable the law should not take note of reality”. It criticised the fact that a case concerning the taking of goods worth under five euros went through three rounds in the courts before being thrown out. The “historic ruling is right and pertinent”, said Italiaglobale.it and derives from a concept that “informed the Western world for centuries - it is called humanity”. However, Mr Ostriakov’s case was sent to appeal on the grounds that the conviction should be reduced to attempted theft, and the sentence cut, because he had not left the shop premises when aught. Italy’s Supreme Court of Cassation, which reviews the application of the law only and not the facts of the case, made a final and definitive ruling on Monday, overturning the conviction entirely. “Stealing small quantities of food to satisfy a vital need for food did not constitute a crime,” the court wrote. “The condition of the defendant, and the circumstances in which the seizure of merchandise took place, prove that he took possession of that small amount of food in the face of an immediate and essential need for nourishment; acting, therefore, in a state of necessity,” wrote the court.

Boozy Brit tourist is found dead in hotel room bath A BRITISH tourist, found drowned in the bath of her Mallorca hotel room on Monday night, had spent the evening drinking. Samantha Johnson, 24, was discovered by hotel staff in the bath, with the tap still running, after they were alerted to water seeping out from under the door of her room. Emergency services were called shortly before 11pm, but paramedics, unable to resuscitate her, pronounced the woman dead at the scene. A post-mortem the following morning confirmed that she died from accidental drowning. A Guardia Civil spokesman told The Local newspaper: “She had a lot of alcohol in her system and the hypothesis is that she passed out and then drowned.” A receptionist at the

TRH Torrenova hotel, between top nightspot Magaluf and Palma Nova, said she had been staying there with her partner, but the couple were involved in a furious row the night before and he had walked out on her. “The woman came to reception very upset on Sunday night and asked us to call the police because her partner was being very aggressive,” the receptionist told The Local. “Then, shortly after, he asked for a cab and went to the airport. She stayed on another night without him and was discovered on Monday evening.” A British Embassy spokesman said: “We are providing support to the family of a British national following her death in Mallorca. We are in close contact with local authorities.”

Sex-toy simply ‘divine’

CONCERNED police in Indonesia confiscated a sex toy from a remote village because the inhabitants, and people on social media, thought it was “angel”. It was found in March, floating in the sea in the Banggai islands, by a fisherman, who took it home. His family looked after the doll, and pictures soon spread online, along with claims that it was an angel. Police investigated amid fears that the rumours would cause unrest, and found it was, in fact, an inflatable sex-doll. Indonesian news portal Detik said photos of the doll, dressed demurely and wearing a hijab, spread on social media shortly after its discovery. What prompted the police probe were the spreading rumours that it was a “bidadari” - a type of angel or spirit - along with unverified

stories about how it was found “stranded and crying”. Many people across Indonesia continue to hold strong beliefs in the supernatural, including the bidadari existence. Local police chief Heru Pramukarno said villagers had found the doll shortly after the rare March solar eclipse, which swept across South East Asia. The timing of the discovery led some to believe that the doll had a divine provenance. “They have no internet, so they don’t know what a sex toy is,” said the police chief. In 2012, a TV station in China’s Xian city apologised after running a false report that a local farmer had discovered a giant piece of precious lingzhi mushroom. The fleshy object, found in a well, was identified by many viewers as a sex toy made of silicone.

A FEW years ago, it would have been unthinkable to imagine a phrase like Negative Eurobor, the rate most often used throughout for calculating mortgage interests, and the interest on other financial products.

Euribor stands for the daily “Euro Interbank Offered Rate”. And, according to the Bank of Spain, it was negative in February, March and April: -0.008% in February, -0.010% in March and -0.012% in April. We now have to wait until June to see what kind of measures are taken by the European Central Bank (see Euribor Plus). The Euribor actually comprises several in-

dexes and takes into account many complex circumstances. And the ECB’s monetary policy serves as a guide for this index, which indicates that interest rates will remain low for a long time. That’s obviously good news for those with loans and mortgages, but not so good for savers. The 12-month Euribor closed 2015 at 0.059 %, which was the steepest year-on-year fall in a decade. Some banks gambled on the possibility that 2016 would be at negative rates, and they have been proved right. For banks, it is bad news because of the probability of tiny interest rates. This makes their profit margins extremely small, and means it is harder, especially for the struggling ones, to trade at a decent profit. Would the bank pay us with a negative Euribor?

The question is: can a consumer/borrower charge the bank for his mortgage? It’s hard to believe we are even asking this! And in reality, most experts agree it’s just a dream. Most mortgages today are based on the 12-month Euribor, and with the sum not in negative interest. The Euribor reference is, currently, negative, which today is unthinkable when you consider the Euríbor of a few years ago. Today, theoretically, you should be paying 0% - absolutely nothing - for your loan. But, “theoretically”, it is not in the spirit of a loan-agreement for the lender to pay for a loan. At most, it should be considered a zero rate. In short, do not expect the bank to pay us for the Euribor descent. Would you loan someone a large sum of money and get absolutely nothing in return, let alone less in real terms?

Euribor plus There could be a new system on the horizon, which we will call Euribor Plus. It would replace the Euribor, and, in principle, it is expected to enter the market place in July. But this new calculation formula - in theory, more realistic - would not come into force overnight. It is assumed that this index would be formed from bank contributions used in actual operations and not on an estimated basis. In other words, it’s a true reflection of the loan market. There are still a few points to be considered, which I will address in another column. Tennis ball diamond worth £48 Million

A MAGNIFICENT diamond, said to be as big as a tennis ball and up for public auction at Sotheby’s next month, could fetch in excess of £48m. The 1,109-carat Lesedi la Rona, the secondlargest, gem-quality, rough diamond ever discovered, was unearthed by Canadianbased company Lucara Diamond Corp in Botswana last November. David Bennett, the auction house’s jewellery division chairman, said: “The Lesedi la Rona is simply outstanding, and its discovery is the find of a lifetime. “Not only is this rough diamond superlative in size and quality, but no

rough, even remotely of this scale, has ever been offered before at public auction.” If valuation reports are accurate, the Lesedi la Rona, to be auctioned in London on 29th June, could easily beat the £33.4m record paid for a diamond by Hong Kong billionaire Joseph Lau. He bought the 12.03-carat polished Blue Moon diamond last year as a gift for his seven-year-old daughter. The largest diamond ever discovered was the 3,106-carat Cullinan, which was cut into nine smaller diamonds to form part of the UK Crown Jewels.

Killer Women with Piers Morgan

Don't Miss...

Wednesday 11th May, ITV1, 21.00 In this first episode, Piers travels to Gatesville Texas to meet Erin Caffey who, at the age of 16, masterminded the brutal murder of her entire family. For this incomprehensible act, Erin will remain behind bars until she is almost 60 years old and in a gripping encounter behind bars, Piers draws from Erin what made an apparently typical teen-aged girl conspire with her boyfriend to kill her mum, dad and two younger brothers. Next, Piers drives to rural East Texas to meet the one survivor of the tragedy, Erin’s father Terry. Terry was shot 5 times and crawled out of his burning home on the night he lost the rest of his family. Now, Terry has made an incredible choice: he has forgiven Erin and still goes to see her in prison every month. Piers meets Terry at the site of the murders – today an abandoned field – and finds out how he can come to terms with this devastating, evil act. In an emotional moment Piers discovers that, for Terry, forgiveness is the only way he can possibly carry on. As the film develops, a central question begins to emerge: was Erin the driving force behind the murders or her 18 year old boyfriend Charlie? Erin and Terry say it’s the latter. But, as Piers seeks out other people close to the case, a different picture emerges. In Austin, Piers meets Lisa Tanner the prosecutor. Tanner wanted to give Charlie the death penalty and firmly believes that Erin is “a murderer, pure and simple”. Piers also meets Teresa Myers, the mother of Charlie’s former friend, who became close to him in the year before the murders. Teresa believes that Charlie would never have come up with the idea. And in a crucial development, Piers uncovers some fascinating police archive: in a recorded interview, Erin’s former boyfriend tells investigators that he too had been approached by Erin about killing her family.

Barging Round Britain with John Sergeant ITV1, 20.00

In episode three, John takes in the delights of the Lancaster Canal, making his way from Tewitfield, down the west coast through Lancaster, on to Glasson Port and finally to Preston. Originally built to carry coal, the ‘black gold’, up from Lancashire, and to carry white limestone down from Kendal, the canal is nicknamed the ‘black and white canal.’ As he sets off on his trip down the canal, John says: “I’ll be showing how, against all the odds, this plucky little canal managed to survive.” As he meanders down the waterway, John can’t resist visiting the famous Carnforth railway station, where he re-enacts his favourite scene from the classic film Brief Encounter, some of which was filmed at the station. After Carnforth, the canal crosses the River Lune on its way to Lancaster, where John marvels at the amazing engineering of the Lune Aqueduct. He says: “The aqueduct was an early work of the great engineer John Rennie and it’s a masterpiece…built to impress.” The importance of this canal was boosted in 1820 when a new branch was cut to the coast, to Glasson Dock, which allowed ships to have direct access to the canal. Within 10-years the dock was packed, transporting coal, slate, timber, grain, potatoes and fish. The canal was a triumph. Nowadays it makes a nice quiet mooring for the night. After a night spent in the dock, John says: “If there’s one thing I really like for breakfast, it’s kippers. Glasson Dock is famous for them.” However, John has to earn his breakfast and heads off to find out how they turn the local herring into his beloved smoked kippers. Later, and back on the canal’s main branch, John heads south to Garstang, famous for its cheeses, the Garstang Blue and the creamy and crumbly Lancashire.

A Blank on the Map. As part of a season of programming marking Sir David Attenborough’s 90th birthday, four of his favourite films are brought together as the renowned naturalist looks back on his personal highlights. First transmitted in 1971, A Blank on the Map is a unique record of a remarkable overland expedition into the heart of unknown territory in Papua New Guinea to make contact with a previously unknown tribe, the Biami. The film follows David as he accompanies a team of over a hundred men as they battle through previously unexplored jungle the blank on the map. They encounter unusual wildlife such as tree kangaroos, the exotic goura pigeons and an emerald green tree python, but finding its people is the ultimate challenge. In a specially shot introduction, David Attenborough recalls key moments from the journey and the magical encounter with the group of tribal people that eventually takes place, and gives a unique insight into what was to be one of the most adventurous trips of his life.

Burma’s Secret Jungle War with Joe Simpson BBC2, 20.00

In this two-part series renowned mountaineer Joe Simpson, who told his story of neardeath in the Andes in Touching The Void, travels to Myanmar (formerly Burma) to retrace the steps of his father Ian, who served with the Chindits - special forces who fought a guerilla war behind Japanese lines in 1944. Accompanied by explorer Ed Stafford, the first man to walk the length of the Amazon, and using the secret diary his father wrote, Joe experiences the challenging jungle conditions which made this one of the toughest campaigns of WWII. Half-way through his journey events in modern-day Myanmar threaten to derail Joe’s plans. Granted special permission to travel in a part of Myanmar closed to tourists, Joe suddenly finds that the first free elections since 1990 are triggering hostilities that could thwart his 30 year-old dream of re-connecting with his father’s experiences - and give him unexpected insights into modern life in a little-known country.

Crash: Anatomy Of An Accident

6th May - 12th May 2016

T uesday

ITV1, 21.00

This new single documentary for ITV focuses on the personal stories of victims caught up in a major road crash involving 130 vehicles and 300 people. On the morning of September 5, 2013, dozens of cars, lorries, vans and motorbikes crashed into one another in thick fog on a 100ft high bridge linking Sheppey Island in Kent with the mainland. Shocking pictures of cars and other vehicles caught up in the mayhem topped newspaper websites and social media as the fog cleared and the news began to break. At the time, police described the fact no-one had died as miraculous. Told from the points of view of those at the heart of the accident, this programme uses testimony from individuals trapped in vehicles, those injured in the incident, and the rescuers who freed them with dramatic reconstructions alongside archive news footage to build a vivid insight into how the people involved felt and acted in the moment and the way the Sheppey Crossing crash changed all their lives. The morning of the crash started normally for the drivers and passengers, who didn’t yet realise the fog that had descended on the bridge, had made driving conditions treacherous. Driver Lisa Snow says: “I just set my day as normal, woke up as normal. I was ready a little bit earlier so I thought, ‘Do you know what, I’ll leave five, ten minutes earlier today.’” Out on the dual carriageway, it quickly became apparent that crossing the bridge would require some care. Driver Graham Thwaites says: “On some days when it’s quite foggy you come up out of it, it can be clear as day. But that day it just didn’t happen. That just got worse and worse and I can remember approaching the bridge at the time feeling quite apprehensive and then quite frightened.” Suddenly, in the thick fog, vehicles started to crash into one another. Passenger Jill Hudson says: “We suddenly realised that there was a van and it had swung round and was facing us in the road and there were two other cars parked in front of it as well that had crashed. As we’re getting through the gap, suddenly there’s a massive bang and the car, it judders and shakes but my husband’s got his foot on the brake really hard. It’s like his feet are going to go through to the floor.”

In episode four, Steve is in Australia, infamous as the ‘home of the deadly’, with more lethal snakes than any other country, dangerous spiders, great white sharks and salt-water crocodiles. Steve says: “It can sometimes feel as if everything here is out to get you, but that’s exactly what gets me excited! I’m here to search out four very different animals but each in their own way just as lethal.” Steve is in the north east of Australia, and starts his adventure south of Cairns, in the small coastal holiday resort of Mission Beach. Its eight miles of beautiful beaches are a huge draw for tourists from all over the world, but there’s an invisible threat lurking in the Coral Sea: the infamous box jellyfish.

Their initial meetings go well but will the older man be able to help Jacub manage his behaviour? 13-yearold Tawne and retired nurse Judy have something in common: they are both victims of bullying. Cunk On Shakespeare BBC2, 22.00

Comedy from Charlie Brooker starring Philomena Cunk, the witless commentator from Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe. Philomena knows absolutely nothing about Shakespeare, but that won’t stop her attempting to present a ground-breaking documentary about him. Fresh from her triumphs on Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe, investigating Time (“It’ll always be an unknowable mystery, like how phones work”) Winston Churchill (“Imagine how good his tweets would have been”), and Donald Trump (“There’s this amazing stuff on his head; it’s not hair, it’s like a sort of furry gas”), Philomena Cunk has finally been given her own show - about William Shakespeare. Cunk will leave no stone unturned as she gets to the bottom of the Bard: visiting his birthplace, exploring The Globe, studying priceless artefacts, and interviewing literally six different experts, including renowned actor Simon Russell Beale, Educating Yorkshire teacher Matthew Burton, and top Shakespearean scholar Professor Stanley Wells. Shorter than Hamlet, funnier than King Lear, and easier to spell than Cymbeline, Cunk On Shakespeare is absolutely the last word in Shakespeare documentaries.

6th May - 12th May 2016

T hursday

BBC1, 21.00

Gareth Malone’s Invictus Choir of wounded exservice men and women have survived their first public performance at the Invictus Launch in London. Now with just four weeks to go before they sing at the Opening Ceremony in Orlando, Florida in front of an audience of thousands, including Prince Harry and Michelle Obama, Gareth brings his choir together to Somerset House, London, for their next rehearsal. Gareth has decided he wants them to write their own lyrics for a brand new song. Some struggled with learning the lyrics last time - will they be able to cope with this challenge? The song-writing process challenges the choir to dig deep into their experiences of injury or illness and the different stages of recovery they are each in. Gareth struggles with his own emotions after hearing one of the choir’s own experience of war and Gareth wonders if he, Gareth, is mature enough to cope with this whole mission. Next Gareth brings the choir back to London to St Martin In The Fields to sing them the finished song. It’s a key moment as the choir hear the lyrics of their own stories. Once the choir is happy with the song Gareth decides to show the lyrics to a special industry friend. Throughout it all, Gareth is desperate to find out how to help them release their emotions when singing. For one member of the choir, Gemma, the experience is lifechanging. Gareth worries that some choir members are struggling to cope with the process and if they will be able to perform in front of such a large audience. To help with this, Gareth takes them on an outing to an unusual venue for a choir! Before they set off to the US Gareth calls the choir to a recording studio and finally, the choir set off to the US. It’s their big moment - will they be able to perform one final duty?

To help, Brolga’s looking to move some of the animals to his 80-acre sanctuary. But, a clash with his old sparring partner, Roger the alpha male kangaroo, has left Brolga on crutches and put all of his plans, including those for the new wildlife hospital, on hold.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

Going for a song: Fun and laughter OVER the last seven days we have had two more Tenerife Loves Karaoke heats, and both events demonstrated just why people love this competition, why we get contestants eager to perform … and why people come to watch.

It’s simple - they are filled with fun and laughter, despite the serious element. With just one-third of the Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2016 competition remaining, the first show (Heat 11) took us to The Pub in Torviscas, which is an extremely friendly venue, frequented mostly by residents. Boss man Tony Burgess, who was fired up for the evening, welcomed us all warmly. And, despite football’s Champions League quarter-finals being shown on the televisions, the real knockouts were reserved for the stage. Our judges were resident compère Jimmy the Fish, Pub regular Gail and John Zammit, representing Oasis Fm. As there were quite a few no-shows, on the evening, the format was changed and each singer performed three songs, the heat-winner being assessed over all three. First up was Jim, who opted for one of his favourite Van Morrison tracks, Brown Eyed Girl, and provided an excellent opener for the night ahead. Zoe was cajoled into entering by her boss, Tony, and made a superb job of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. The fast-paced Motown classic proved no obstacle to her, and how

she completed it without collapsing was a miracle! Business owner Tony was next and there was a sneaking suspicion that he would be a force to be reckoned with, based on the song he chose: Robbie Williams’ Angels. And Tony did not disappoint, performing a powerhouse version of the 1977 hit, including his own words. And this set the tone for the fun-and-laughter evening. Diane followed Tony with the Mary Wells classic My Guy, with a solid performance. To round off the first third of the evening, Steve was next to go, and when given the microphone to introduce himself, there seemed to be some surprise with his choice: Passenger Let Her Go. However, Steve did the song proud. The second part of the contest saw the competitors perform in reverse order, which meant that Steve was up first with Uncle Kracker’s Follow Me. Diane was next, singing Savage Garden’s Truly Madly Deeply. Then, in true style, Tony treated us to his own version of Saturday Night At The Movies by The Drifters, which again brought the crowd to their feet - the best was still to come - and he was followed by Zoe, with Amy Winehouse favourite Valerie. Closing the second part of the show was Jimmy, who treated us to Chuck Berry’s toe-tapping Johnny B. Goode. Keeping to the same order, Steve opened the third and final part of this heat with Kathy Young’s A Thousand Stars. He was followed by Diane, with Patsy Cline’s Crazy, and then came Tony’s final num-

ber, the classic Whitney Houston song, I Will Always Love You, sung in true Tony style and performed brilliantly! Zoe had to follow Tony, which she did it stunning fashion, performing Wild Cherry hit Play That Funky Music. To close the show and, after a forced song-change, Jim sung UB40’s Kingston Town to the delight of the audience. That was that! The result soon followed and going through to the grand final representing The Pub this year is Zoe Jackson (below), our 11th finalist.

For our next show, we headed for Golf del Sur and Heat 12. We arrived at Palms Pool Bar to a warm welcome from boss Babs and all her staff. The contestant list grew as the night went on, and the start was delayed slightly so that the football didn’t interrupt the contestants’ performances. Judges for the evening were Dale (Palms Pool Bar compere), Denis (Palms Pool Bar regular), plus Dave Scott and John Zammit, from Oasis Fm. First up was Denise, who gave a superb rendition of the Alison Moyet take on Love Letters. Next came Kevin who, like many in this heat, chose a big song - British rock band Dire Straits’ 1981 hit Romeo and Juliet. Kevin performed this just about to perfection and with passion to receive the night’s first

standing evasion. Following Kevin was Janet, singing Ray Charles’ 2003 Grammy Awardsnominated Georgia on my Mind. Jane did the song proud, to great applause. Benny Hill’s Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West) comedy classic was the next song to be performed and Paul, complete with shorts and sandals, did the song justice and got the crowd singing along. Once they had settled down, June again had them clapping and singing along to the Proclaimers’ 500 miles hit. That closed the first half, and, while a short comfort break was taken, Gordon Slayney, this year’s TLK compere, entertained everyone with a few of his favourite numbers. The second half got under way with Federico taking the stage to perform another big anthem tune, Nickelback’s How You Remind Me. It got the session off to cracking start with everyone cheering, clapping and laughing, thanks to Federico’s version. Damion, was up next and, again, a big song was chosen - Ed Sheeran’s A Team. You could see that Damion enjoyed his few minutes on stage, and so did the crowd, who gave him great support, as they had for all the contestants. Frabrico, from Uruguay, who had never before sung on his own, we were told, jumped on stage and belted out the Erasure and karaoke favourite A Little Respect. You have to give it to Frabrico because, not only did he get through the whole song, but he also had the best dance moves of the night. Heat 12’s final contestant was Angie, who has performed at sev-

eral heats this year, so determined is she to clinch a final spot. The song she chose was the Texas hit I Don’t Want a Lover, and, as in all her other heats, Angie did the song justice and thoroughly enjoyed herself. Scores were soon in, and our final three sing-off contestants were Janet, Kevin and Denise. Janet was up with another big tune Nights In White Satin, by the Moody Blues. It was a good performance, risky some may say as it is such a big tune, but she delivered superbly. Kevin was next, with great anticipation among the audience, and chose The Snake, a Northern Soul number by Al Wilson It really was a first-class great performance and welldelivered. Denise finished the sing-off with a version of Brenda Lee’s All Alone Am I, giving it her all and singing it superbly and passionately. With the judges checking and re-checking the scores (just 0.25 separating first and second places) the result was passed to Gordon, who announced that Denise (pictured) would be walking away with the heat-winner’s trophy and a prized place in this year’s final. We now seven females and five males in the 4th June grand final, at Showtime, Las Americas, where all the heat winners will compete for the 1,000-euro cash prize and the title of Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2016. It promises to be a thrilling final as a result of the high singing standards witnessed, and also the variety and style of songs performed. This year’s competition is proudly sponsored by Bombay Babu Authentic Indian Tan-

doori Restaurants, which has three perfect places to enjoy the best Indian food in Tenerife: Torviscas Playa, Callao Salvaje and their latest restaurant in La Tejita commercial centre, between Los Abrigos to El Medano. Bombay Babu also offers a full take-away and free delivery service - call 922 705 092 or go on-line at bombaybabu.com As an additional bonus, the TLK heats are being filmed by MyVideoI, with each entrant’s footage posted on Oasis Fm facebook page. Up For Grabs is a personalised video of your journey with Tenerife Loves Karaoke, and all you need to lend your support is go to www. youtube.com/myvideoi Click subscribe, then ‘like’ your favourite video. The video/contestant with the most ‘likes’ on 1st June wins the personalised video. There’s still time to compete in the three remaining heats - open to everyone over the age of 13, every nationally and to anyone who has entered before. Call Oasis Fm on 902 232 102, register at the relevant venues, or at facebook oasisfm Tenerife. But hurry because there are few heats left. They will be held during May on Wednesday (11th), at Dylans Bar, El Mirador; 22nd, Albatross Bar, Costa del Silencio and, finally, Leonardos, Las Americas on 27th.

THE DANCE MASTERS

By Brad Chermside

IT is commonly assumed that 10,000 hours of quality practice in any field is enough to make someone an expert. That’s tantamount to some 14 months.

But that figure is dwarfed by the 30-plus years of dedication to their art the dancers in the Sound of Musicals have between them. Tracey Cutting, Kim Adshead, Lone Guest and Michelle Terri Almgill bring a trove of talent and experience to the production, now running for its seventh successful year at Showtime, Las Americas, Tracey, the longest serving member of the cast, began dancing and

acting in her native Kent when she was just eight years old. By 15, she was choreographing for her local dance academy and, two years later, she toured the UK as a professional with various projects. She then grabbed a chance in Italy, where she was a backing dancer for famous singers on Italian televi-

sion and, also, part of a touring ballet troupe. When Tenerife came calling, she and her sister, Amanda, put together an award-winning cabaret act called “Hot Ice.” Fusing comedy, dance, funk and rock, its popularity led to gigs in Japan and Venezuela, as well as slots supporting popular comedians Little and Large, Bernard

Manning and Cannon and Ball. Tracey’s most recent partner in “Hot Ice”, Kim, first studied dance as young as four. For a further 16 years she trained rigorously in ballet, tap, moderndance and gymnastics at two renowned musical-theatre schools. While still living in home-town Sheffield, Kim participated in

“Miss Dance Great Britain” and beat thousands of competitors to reach the final, at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End. And she has now been an invaluable member of the Showtime team since 2012. A year after Kim joined the show, Lone touched down in Tenerife from Las Vegas, where she was a headline act at the Flamingo Hotel with the Radio City Rockettes. Prior to that, she sailed the world with several cruise-lines as a dancer and magician’s assistant. She was also a catalogue and catwalk model for a plethora of clothing, hair and make-up brands. Lone, at ease on stage since early infancy, brings a lifetime of knowledge and expertise to her role as Lola in the show, and as a teacher at Ritmania Dance School, in Los Cristianos. Michelle, the newest addition to the cast, came to Tenerife with

her family when she was seven. With her big sister, she quickly captured the hearts of residents and tourists alike with their majorettes show, “The Twirl Girls”. Michelle, who also had a keen interest in singing, became the youngest-ever Tenerife Pop Idol winner at just 11, and she continued to develop with regular lessons. More recently, she has appeared in the spectacular “Rock Story” and “History” productions, and she has also accompanied big-name DJs at nightclubs Papagayo and Monkey Beach. With youth, beauty and a level head, her role as leading lady in The Sound of Musicals is sure to be a stepping-stone to even greater heights. Get your tickets to see the ladies in action every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, via the website: www.showtimetenerife.com/thesound-of-musicals

The ‘Beautiful Island’ By Vanessa Vee UPON arrival, it will become clear that La Palma is entirely different from Tenerife … with a discernibly slower pace and relaxed atmosphere. Though tourists are few, the locals are quiet, yet respectful and welcoming.

Given its location as the most north-westerly of all the Canarian Islands, La Palma is first to meet the prevailing trade winds, bringing more rainfall, endowing the Island with a wetter climate, increased biodiversity and lush, green landscape. No wonder La Palma is nicknamed “The Beautiful Island”. Much of it is used to

grow bananas, particularly at low levels, and to the south of the island, and 23 wine varieties are produced. Many are unique as they are blended from ancient varieties, wiped out across Europe hundreds of years ago. La Palma, the fifthlargest Canary Island, boasts a population of 85,000 people, which is large, relative to its

708sq/km area. The Island has been declared a “world biosphere reserve”, and the locals are dedicated to preserving and maintaining its beauty and cleanliness - all the vital qualities which make it an attractive and prime hiking destination. Many tourists make use of the expertlyplanned, mapped-out walking paths, of which there are three levels of

duration and difficulty. And you simply must take a drive up to the Caldera de Taburiente, a protected national park, to experience the most spectacular views of your entire trip. It creates an astonishing panoramic view, and the trees provide welcome relief to trekkers from the hot sun, making the walk more pleasurable. Take a short stroll

through Los Llanos de Aridane town, taking in its narrow and intricate streets, quaint street cafes and colourfullypainted doorways. Los Llanos has received lots of investment recently and is an excellent shopping centre for shopping, more so than Santa Cruz, which acts as the Island’s administrative centre. All in all, I was struck

by the cleanliness of La Palma, the geology, lava tunnels, and the great variety of outdoor pursuits, such as cycling, hiking, star-gazing and whale-watching. La Palma is altogether a quieter location compared with Tenerife, and, with this in mind, it provides a more family-orientated holiday destination, well-suited to those with younger children. Tenerife Sunshine Travel are currently offering a week’s holiday this month in La Palma: 7 nights (4* half-board) accommodation in a room with a sea view, including return ferry from Los Cristianos and car, from just 385 euros pp. *Based on two residents sharing. Nonresident prices are also available, as well as alternative dates, hotels and board basis. Contact the friendly travel team on 922 751 867, call into the Travel Centre in Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos (open 7 days a week) or email travel@tenerifesunshine.com

We chose some picks to start with, including the exquisite spinachartichoke dip, served with parmesan flat bread with a strong, cheesy flavour, and T u p e l o chicken tenders - crispy c h i c k e n strips served with honey mustard and hickory BBQ sauce. For our main course, we decided on the Norwegian Salmon with fresh vegetables - you can taste the cedar and the tangy BBQ sauce with buttery mash potatoes. We also had fajitas you can choose from beef and chicken, even shrimp or a combination of them all - accompanied by Pico de Gallo, Monterey jack cheddar, guacamole sour cream and warm tortilla wraps, with stacks of salad. And they are all so delicious!

That’s partly because it features a voucher containing a five-euro discount per person off the final bill. But you must produce the voucher. After our chat, we opted for a little ice-cream to help the digestion.

Well, that’s our excuse! And we simply couldn’t resist a cocktail of raspberry, mint and lemon. The Hard Rock Cafe is well worth a visit because the food is exceptional, and way above your expectations of an American burger place! LET THERE BE LIGHT

By Carl Pattison

SUMMER’S here, and, just as we see the days getting hotter, the need is greater to be blonder in salons.

As it heats up, some women feel they want to go lighter with their hair because blonde is “the” colour of this season. But, being lighter isn’t all about turning everyone peroxide blonde. There are hundreds of shades to work with, from mousey to platinum, and all that’s in between. Sometimes, if I mention to clients about going lighter, they immediately think of a bright, brash blonde.

6th May - 12th May 2016

Being lighter in the summer months has so many benefits. As you bronze your skin, hair which is too dark can make some skin tones look too harsh. But adding different shades of blonde, to a darker brown, can look stunning, and still seem natural. It’s all about colour placement, and how to match the shades with your skin tone. Great, too, if you want to blend in those first

greys, rather than colouring your whole head, just for the sake of a few strands. If you’re unsure of the most suitable blonde - or lighter shade - for you, consult your qualified stylist, who will show you the different options available. Using hair-lighteners should be left to the professionals. They can be lethal in the wrong hands, as we see, too often. If done correctly, being lighter - no matter how subtle or dramatic - should not have a detrimental effect on your hair. Our new “OLAPLEX” system guards against damage, as it is added to your colour to block any harm that could arise during you lightening treatment. Ask us for your free consultation about any colour service.

WEAR YOUR DESSERTS… By Carl Pattison

IF you want a change from your usual summer wardrobe of whites and beiges, mix it up with the new, cool, icecream colours.

Clashing them together is one of this season’s hottest trends, so, be on the look-out for pastel yellows, blues, pinks and greens. Blending them together in any eclectic mix will surely get you noticed, for all the right reasons. Baby pinks will work well with soft yellows, and even blues. Yellow hues and mintgreens will also look hot with blues. Don’t be afraid to clash them, to create your own spin on this look. Even three of these tones can work well together, if done well. If you’re going to bring the whole outfit together, don’t forget your accessories. Don’t go overboard by adding too many colours. White works well as an extra colour.

Bag-and- shoe -wise, it’s a very Eighties’ theme, but it has a new twist on things, as happens in the world of fashion. You could stick to one, overall colour, but bring another into your look by using jewellery as a complementing shade. Go for chunky, plastic, moulded shapes, which

are large and striking. However you choose to put your stamp on this theme, think back to your childhood days of ice-cream colours, and there you have your palette. There’s nothing more summery than pastel tones, and nothing looks as cool as icecream shades.

Building up those vital health hopes By Val Sainsbury NO ONE likes going to the doctor, and many of us are put off going altogether if certain parts of the body are involved - or the functions they perform!

Obviously, this isn’t an ideal situation, because, in many cases, delays to the start of treatments can be fatal. And now, research has shown that men are the worst at visiting their GPs because they don’t want to make a fuss, and are too embarrassed. Cancer symptoms are being ignored, and those who work in “traditionally-masculine” industries, such as building and construction, are particularly poor at starting conversations about their health. Of 1,000 men questioned, more than onethird admitted to having been worried about their health, to such an extent that they have been “kept awake at night”. Despite this, 14% said that they would put off reporting worrying symptoms, such as a lump, or suspicious mole. And more than 10%, who have noticed changes to their health in the last year, have put off seeing a doctor, because they are frightened that the symptoms might be a sign of something serious. Another survey, of over

600 men working in the building industry, found that 43 would not want to talk about symptoms such as a lump, a suspicious mole, or pain, in case it was thought they were “making a fuss”. Almost a quarter admitted to feeling discouraged from seeking help, because they were too embarrassed. This is despite research showing that men are 60% more likely to get cancer - and 70% more likely to die from the disease - than women. John Newlands, Senior Macmillan information nurse, said: “It’s really important that both men and women

are aware of the signs and symptoms of cancer, and that they report any changes to their health as early as possible. “We often find that men don’t know what they should look out for, or that they feel embarrassed or unsure when talking about these changes.” Macmillan has launched a new campaign, “Don’t Let Cancer Ruin Your Foundations,” with building and construction firms including Travis Perkins, Benchmarx Kitchens & Joinery, Kier Group, Costain, Selco Builders Warehouse and Wolseley UK.

Keep working - live longer! MANY of Tenerife’s “more-mature” visitors and residents have retired, and now enjoy a variety of hobbies and pastimes, which keep them happy and healthy.

Bowls and golf are two of the most popular sports here, and many retirees spend e n d -

less hours benefiting from our wonderful climate. But some pensioners retire to a life of armchair-sitting, and contemplating which TV programme to watch next. Most people count down the days to retirement, but a recent study has found that it could actually shorten your life. Working past the age of 65 could actually help us live longer, and lead to an 11% lower risk of death from all causes. Those who term themselves as being un-

healthy are also likely to live longer - as long as they keep working! An extra year of work saw a 9% lower-mortality risk. Chenkai Wu, lead author of the Oregon State University study, said: “It may not apply to everybody, but we think that work brings people a lot of economic and social benefits, which could impact the length of their lives.” The team chose 2,956 individuals, who began the study in 1992, and had retired by 2010. Wu and his colleagues divided them into two

groups: unhealthy and healthy. About two-thirds of the group fell into the healthy category, while the rest were deemed unhealthy. During the study period, about 12% of the healthy and 25.6% of the unhealthy retirees died. The data proved that working a year longer had a positive impact on the study participants’ mortality rate, regardless of their health status. Robert Stawski, senior author o f the

paper, and associate professor, said: “The healthy group is generally more advantaged in terms of education, wealth, healthbehaviours and lifestyle. But taking all of those issues into account, the pattern still remained. “The findings seem to indicate that people who remain active and engaged gain a benefit from that.” Researchers from University College London, who examined 3,500 men and women over 65, say it is never too late to start being active.

BEDDY BUYS! By Miruna Voicu IT is estimated that by the age of 50, we will have spent one-third of our lives in bed - or some 16 years! But whether on vacation or in your own holiday home, a good night´s sleep will be important to you.

You come away to relax, and good-quality sleep is vital to this. In theory, it should be easier to sleep well while you are away. After all, you’re removed from the stresses and strains of everyday life, there is peace and quiet, and there is less pressure to get up at a certain time. Your mattress should be changed every eight-to-10 years. When you consider that you sweat each night, and the mattress is a haven for dust-mites, this

may be vital for your health as well. Wear and tear also means that the amount of support and comfort you get will also be affected, particularly if you rent your property out, so the mattress is in pretty constant use. When buying a double bed, you should get the biggest one you can fit in the space available. In hot weather, people tend to sleep better in a larger bed, but check that it will fit before buying. The standard sizes are double (1.35cm), kingsize (1.50cm), or

superking (1.80cm), which is the same size as two single beds together. If fitting a bigger bed means you may lose out on storage space, consider buying a base on which the mattress, together with all the bedding, lifts up effortlessly to allow you to use the entire inside of the base. A good mattress need not break the bank, either. There are some excellent models offering a sprung core for support, regardless of the different sizes and weights of people, but

with a layer of viscoelastic foam for comfort without the heat. You might have seen that latex mattresses offer optimum comfort, and this could be true in the UK because they adapt to your body. But this traps your body heat - a bonus in cold climates, but not here! You also need to consider the environment in which you sleep. To make the most of not needing strict hours on holiday, you must keep the room dark, and at the correct temperature. Sun-curtains or roller-

Those who enjoyed moderate physical activity at least once a week - such as gardening, washing the car, walking or dancing - were 2½ times more likely to age healthily. This was defined as not having any long-term illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, lung problems, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. And those who did vigorous physical activity at least once a week - including jogging, aerobics or hill-walking - were 3½ times more likely to have a healthy old age.

blinds will control the entry of both light and heat. And if you have them made to order, it ensures that the light doesn’t creep around the sides. This is also true if you have small children, and need to convince them to go to bed while it is still light outside! Buying a big bed means it will definitely be the focal point of the room, so you must also consider dressing it with colourful throws and cushions to make look inviting - and ready for a good night´s sleep! *All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo, who will call to your property to advise you on your choice.

Your Emails

Dear Editor, Hi, this is Penny Mosavian, former head of Britannia School, which was in Los Cristianos for 15 years before closing its doors in 2010. It is 20 years since the school first opened, and we are organising a small reunion on 10th May at The Winchester Pub in Fanabe, at 4pm. And anyone who remembers the school, either as a pupil or parent, is welcome to join us. Many of our students and their families are back in the UK now, so this is the first of a chain of reunions happening this year. We are also proud that we still have an active Facebook group, with many of our former students and staff. They share memories and stories regularly, which just goes to show that the Britannia School family is still strong! As heads, my husband has now retired, but I’ve gone home to become a Director of Studies at Applied Linguistics, in the University of Warwick, so I’m still active. I can be contacted on Spanish mobile 606 329 132. Many Thanks

Disabled athletes’ dreams relying on your donations THE ninth Liberty Seguros 10km race’, which takes place in Madrid on 22nd May, has a significant objective: to help young, disabled athletes realise their dreams of becoming professional paralympians.

These individuals, from Team Liberty Insurance Paralympic Athletics, are battling every day to succeed, their ambition being to represent Spain in future Paralympic Games. Registration is little more than 10 euros, and those not wanting to take part can contribute to the development of the young athletes making up the “Liberty Paralym-

pic Promises Team” by making an anonymous donation of their choice. This can be done by bank transfer, with the reference clearly marked as ‘Dorsal Zero’ to the following account with IBAN number: ES73 2038 1042 7560 0080 7227. This race, which represents an important part of Liberty’s Corporate and Social Responsibility programme, has been celebrated since 2008.

And the event, which has enjoyed a great rise in popularity over the years, has been adapted to make it even more attractive to both participants and fans. Along with the traditional 10km run, Liberty Seguros will this year launch the “Carrera de la Superación”. It is a 1,000m race designed specifically for those who do not have the physical capability, or those with a disability which impedes

them from taking part in the main 10km race. Liberty Seguros, In connection with the event, has created #SeSalen, the largest fan club for Paralympic sports to date. And to enhance this support, famous Spanish rap artist El Langui has created an anthem. You can show your encouragement for these athletes across social media platforms by quoting the hashtag #SeSalen. The Liberty Seg-

uros Group, one of the principal sponsors of the Spanish Paralympic Committee, strengthens the ADO Paralympic Plan (ADOP) activities by supporting athletes in their training. The collaboration and partnership was established in 2007 and has since been revised. Over the years, the commitment between the two entities has grown and developed into a relationship of mutual trust - and success for paralympians. As a result, the Liberty Seguros Paralympic Athletics Promises Team were born. The initiative involves the insurer’s support and finance of young people with different disabilities, who are striving to achieve a future in the world of sport. The team, comprising 16 boys and girls, aged 12-15 years, from various locations across Spain (Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Alicante, Burgos, Leon, Cadiz, Vizcaya and Toledo), all have either physical disabilities, visual impairments or cerebral palsy.

Tejita’s home-hunting PODENCOS, the Canarian hunting dogs, are the most used and abused dog in Spain, often kept in squalid conditions, only to be loaded into cages and carried on trailers to hunt rabbits in the mountains. And sadly, when no longer needed, they are dumped … or worse!Yet they can make the most loveable pets. Tejita was off-loaded near Sotavento many months ago and has finally been caught. In the few weeks she has spent in a foster home, she has learned to trust humans and is a friendly, loving dog. But her foster carers can’t have her any longer because of other commitments, and it will be a crying shame to put her in the refuge. That would be a step

backwards for the poor girl, so can you offer her a home, or even foster her while we keep on looking? Call Sue for more information on 629 388 102. Designs on funds Help us raise muchneeded funds at our Amanda’s Bar show tomorrow (Saturday). It’s near our charity shop in San Eugenio, opposite Hotel la Nina, from 2pm, and there will be lots of acts, singing for free, as well as a raffle,

Golfers tee-up for charity LIZ Montague, from the Helping Hands Children’s Charity, receives a 2,700-euro cheque from Amarilla Golf Club captain Dougie Drake to support the cause. World Snooker Championship

Double delight for Selby’s Leicester MARK Selby completed “the best night” of his life with a second world snooker title, just 13 minutes after his home-town Leicester were crowned Premier League champions.

The affable 32-year-old beat China’s Ding Junhui 18-14 at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre to become only the sixth multiple winner of the title in the modern era. “I don’t know what is more of a shock - me winning it a second time or Leicester becoming champions,” he said. “To win the title once is great, but to win it twice is a dream come true.” At the start of the season, Leicester were an astonishing 5,000-1 to become champions even the return of Elvis was rated a better bet while world No.1 Selby went into the final still searching for his best form. He added: “Hopefully,

LEADING Formula 1 team Mercedes have rejected accusations that they are favouring Nico Rosberg over teammate Lewis Hamilton this season. World champion Hamilton’s car has been dogged with mechanical problems this season, while Rosberg, runnerup to his colleague last season, has enjoyed the smoothest of rides during his four consecutive victories so far. But in an open letter to fans posted on their website, the team address “the haters, the naysayers and the conspirators” following criticism on social media. Mercedes also say it was a “miracle” Hamilton’s car finished Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix at all because the engine had zero water

in another two years, Leicester will win the Premier League again and I’ll come back and win at the Crucible again. I’m quite emotional. When you look at people who’ve won it twice - to join that elite group is something special.” In the modern era, the only players to have won two or more titles are Stephen Hendry (7), Steve Davis (6), Ronnie O’Sullivan (5), John Higgins (4), plus Alex Higgins and Mark Williamom with two apiece. Selby’s first world title victory, against O’Sullivan in 2014, was the same year in which Leicester were promoted to the top flight from the Championship. And the coincidence carried on during Monday evening when Selby - nicknamed the Jester from Leicester - potted the first red of his match-winning 74 break at the same time as the final whistle blew at Stamford Bridge, signalling Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea,

which ended their title chances. Selby’s double delight showed when he revealed: “I didn’t know Leicester had won it until after I’d won. The guy sat in the front behind me, called Brian, told me the result, and that was the first time I knew. “I knew the game was kicking off as I walked into the arena, but I tried not to think about it too much to distract me from what I had to do.” Selby, who admitted playing “av-

erage or lower” during the tournament, came in for criticism because of his slow, meticulous style of play. A 66-minute frame on the first day of the final was just 10 minutes short of the longest frame a t

the Crucible, set by Selby and Marco Fu in the semi-final. Asked if the disapproval of his performances upset him, Selby said: “Not really. But it played on my mind a little. When I made a break, I looked at the scoreboard and saw it was around 10 or 11 minutes, so wasn’t that slow. “It was just when the frames were scrappy, when I played safe, and that put Ding under pressure.” Runner-up Ding, from China, came over to England at the age of 15 and has b e e n living in Sheffield

for the past decade. The 29-year-old qualifier missed the chance to become the first Asian world champion, but, despite falling short this time, showed his class with 15 centuries during the tournament. “It is the first time I felt like I have played at home,” he said. “The fans wanted me to win the title, and they love to see other countries’ players win it. It felt good. “People will be disappointed in China, but there is nothing disappointing in reaching the final. I just wanted to enjoy the day. “It was great experience , and I may never have a chance again. Not many players can get in the final.”

We’re not guilty, say Hamilton mechanics pressure for the last 16 laps. But they do admit they have not “met our own expectations on reliability” in 2016, which will be of no consolation to the world champion. The letter comes in the wake of Hamilton’s four troubled races at the start of this season, which leaves him trailing Rosberg in the championship by 43 points - the equivalent of a win and a second place. And the problems have left him exposed to the likelihood of encountering further difficulties later in the season. The engine problems

suffered by Hamilton mean he is likely to to penalised by grid penalties, imposed for using more than the permitted number of parts at some stage. But the manufacturer’s letter adds up to an genuine, impassioned plea for fans accusing the team of trying to engineer a championship for Rosberg to reconsider. “Performance-wise, we are right on the money, but there is work to be done,” reads the letter. “This is a mechanical sport, balancing on the knife-edge of performance and endurance.

You have to push the boundaries, and failures can happen.” Mercedes say the entire team are “baffled and gutted” that Hamilton has suffered identical failures in his engine’s hybrid system in the last two qualifying sessions, in China and Russia. But they maintain they made a “monumental effort” to fly spare parts out to Russia overnight, so that Hamilton could start from 10th on the grid rather than in the pit lane. The letter also explains, in detail, the engine problems expe-

rienced by both cars in the Russian Grand Prix on the way to their onetwo finish. It said they saw “some alarming behaviour” from Rosberg’s MGUK - the part of the hybrid system which recovers energy from the rear axle - shortly after his pit-stop. We spent a number of laps reassuring him that he had a good gap over Lewis and could ease off before the FIA gave us the all-clear to tell him to switch to a setting that would control the issue.” Hamilton’s water-pressure issue, they said, arose shortly after this,

when the Briton was setting fastest laps and closing on Rosberg. “We needed to await confirmation from the FIA of what we could tell him over the radio (as a result of this season’s restrictions on communication between team and driver),” read the letter. It said that, with no water pressure for what amounted to nearly a quarter of the race, “the job he did to nurse the car home and still retain second place was truly remarkable”, adding: “We genuinely aren’t sure by what miracle the car limped across the line.”

Sharpen up … be prepared TIME flies, they say, and in the near future, so will the arrows of hundreds of keen darters, chomping at the bit to get back on the oche.

The close season, of course, gives players the chance to sharpen their tips, get fitted with new team shirts,

and practise their counting abilities. Maybe! Anyway, the 48-week campaign begins next Friday (13th May), with a slightly new look to the set-up, including five new teams. So a big, warm darts league welcome to Scruffy Macs, The Tavern, Marilyns B, Nauta Nomads and Rood. Yes, Rood, our Belgian friends, are back, ya ya ya!

Obviously, these new teams will include some old faces well known to the league … some older than others! And they include a so-called “dream team” in the shape of Scruffy Macs, who have asked to go straight into Division 1, because they could well challenge for the title. We shall see… Apart from the league matches, the season will again include the

ever-popular Team Handicap competition, as well as Singles, Doubles and Trebles knock-out events, plus a new cup competition for Division 1 teams. More details to follow on that one. All the above will lead us up to our legendary presentation night on Friday, 7th April, 2017. That’s if our elbows haven’t fallen off by then! So the 31 teams will

line up in this fashion, with 14 in Division 1 and 17 in Division 2. Division 1 Boothen Army. Boothen Titans, Exiles, Gaffers, Ourplace Playboys, Palms Sports Bar, Pas O Nadas A, Phoenix, Phoenix Flights, Sandys International, Sandys Reborn, Scruffy Macs, Spear Chuckers, The Pub Division 2 Bar 180 B, Bar Leo-

time to Downhill thrills Still make point for en pie charity EN PIE, the Canarian Mental Health charity, is staging a fundraising bike ride from the base of El Teide to Los Gigantes Port on Saturday, 4th June.

The “Crazy about Cycling” charity challenge will test the partici-

En Pie is joining forces with local children’s charity Helping Hands to raise funds for two worthy causes. The exhilarating ride will take cyclists down the mountain, through picturesque scenery, small trails and banana plantations with stops along the way - firstly for hot chocolate and gofio cake, and then wine and cheese. All local, of course!

There are limited places, so sign up by contacting Lisa Allard on 636 327 185, or Liz Montague on 661 274 281. LEICESTER have made sure it’s all over at the top of the Premier League, but there is still all to play for at the bottom with just a couple of games remaining.

The Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League is also coming to an end, but, with three games remaining, can somebody emerge from the pack to grab a late victory? With a few good results this weekend across the league, the point-scoring team of the week really are a mixed bunch. We have two players from Everton and West Ham after both teams recorded wins. The rest of the players came from Newcastle, Arsenal, Leicester, Southampton, Swansea, Watford and Man City. Player of the week was Southampton’s Sadio Mane with a big 20 points after an outstanding display against Man City. There was again no change to the Oasis Fm League’s top four,

and it looks as though Frank Devany will take the title because he is 52 points clear. But there is still an outside chance for somebody to have an excellent couple of weeks and catch him. An unlikely hat-trick scorer, or a well-timed bench boost could close the gap. This week’s team of the week were the Brummie Bar Stewards, managed by Hugh O’Sullivan, who came in with 65 points. Not the highest of totals we have seen, but enough for them to climb into the top 10. Harry Kane (12) captained the side, but the best point-scorer was Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow (15). And with the rest of the team scoring steadily, it was enough to pull in a decent total. So, if you want to achieve a higher league finish, there are just a couple more chance to shuffle the pack and score big. And this week, you have the chance. Keep a close eye on the fixtures because a fair few teams go double-bubble. The points are out there if you look carefully!

Premier League preview

By Adi Benson WITH just two weeks left to go, it’s hat’s off to the unlikely lads of Leicester, who clinched the title, thanks to Eden Hazard’s superb equaliser for Chelsea against closest rivals Spurs at Stamford Bridge on Monday. And we still have time for twists and turns in the battle for Champions League football and the relegation fight.

Champion, but battle goes on... wrong end of the table. But with five wins and a draw in the last 10 games, they have ensured they’ll be back next season. Rumours linking Brendan Rodgers with a return to the club are still strong, but would that be a step backwards. Prediction: Home win Last season: 2-1

Leicester v Everton

Norwich v Man Utd

When Norwich recently beat Newcastle, they moved four points clear of the relegation places and looked like staying up. Since then, though, they have lost three straight games and dropped to 19th, still two points from safety. If they don’t get a result, they’ll probably need to win their final two, which will be a big ask. Man Utd are still chasing fourth spot and, with a game in hand of close rivals Man City, every point now counts to ensure they keep the pressure on. With City playing Arsenal this weekend, it is imperative United take all three points. Prediction: Away win Last season: N/A

Aston Villa v Newcastle

Villa looked like ending their losing streak last weekend as they showed some fighting spirit. But it was not to be as they continued to concede poor goals. They have now gone 12 games without scoring a single point, and it looks like they will struggle next season in the Championship. Newcastle secured a superb result against

Palace, which moved them out of the bottom three and must have boosted their confidence. All they can do is keep looking to add to their points tally and not concern themselves with the teams below, especially as Norwich and Sunderland have an extra game to play. Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-0

Bournemouth v West Brom

It’s a good job Bournemouth managed to get enough points for survival a few weeks ago because they have now lost three games in a row. Manager Eddie Howe will be disappointed to end the campaign like this, but at least they have this chance to put a smile back on home-fan faces. West Brom, who are safe as well, are also coasting towards the end of the season. But like their opponents, they have only done just enough to stay up. It will be another summer of rebuilding for the Baggies as players look to move on. But will Tony Pulis be given the task? Prediction: Draw Last season: N/A

Crystal Palace v Stoke

Palace should really be looking over their shoulders because they are still in danger of relegation. Okay, it’s an outside chance, but if they lose their final two games and Sunderland win their final three, Palace are down. They need a win to ensure that doesn’t happen, and they must make the most of home advantage. Stoke will be disappointed not to have challenged for a Europa League place after bringing in some great creative players last summer. They look like finishing in the top half of the table, though. And, with a few more tweaks, they should come back a better side next season. Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-1

Sunderland v Chelsea

Sunderland have lost just twice in 10 games, but six draws have cost them dearly, and they travel to Chelsea in the bottom three, one point behind Newcastle. With the Magpies

playing Villa, though, that could be stretched to four points. A win is essential and they do have a game in hand. But, as we all know, that counts for nothing until the points are on the board. Chelsea have climbed to ninth after their slow, stodgy start, but they are unlikely to go further, which means there will be no European football at Stamford Bridge next season. It will be interesting to see if that affects their ability to bring in new signings. Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-0

West Ham v Swansea

Leicester have had the fairytale season, but Hammers are not far behind and still have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League. What an achievement that would be as they head to their new Olympic stadium in the summer. Bilic, in my eyes, resembles a risk as manager. But he has proved to be very astute and has done well. Swansea were in trouble towards the

So the Foxes have done it, becoming unlikely Premier League winners, but their success is thoroughly deserved with the way they have played and fought. The pressure is off them now, and they can enjoy the party in front of their home fans tomorrow (Saturday) evening and try to round it off with a win. The pressure continues to mount on Everton manager Roberto Martinez as the season comes towards a close. And with the fans against him, it doesn’t look good. I didn’t rate him at Wigan and, though he was an odd choice after getting them relegated, his first season was okay. But the team haven’t progressed, and a change is on the way. Prediction: Home win Last season: 2-2

Tottenham v Southampton

With the title now beyond them, Spurs will want to finish runnersup above rivals Arsenal, but they still have a job to do because they are just three points ahead. It is vital for players to keep their concentration and get their heads back in the game after some nasty scenes against Chelsea. Composure will be needed. Southampton are also looking for points as they chase a Europa League place, so they still have a job to do as well, which will make this an interesting match. They had a great

result against Man City and will come into this game full of confidence, looking for another three points. Prediction: Away win Last season: 3-1

Man City v Arsenal

This is a massive match for City because they are in danger of missing out on fourth spot, should they drop points here, with Man Utd and West Ham circling. Pelligrini shuffled his pack because of the Champions League semi-final and it backfired. He needs a committed performance here from his team. Arsenal will be hoping that Spurs’ heads have gone as the title slipped away from them because they could still finish second. That said, a top-four finish is not guaranteed for the Gunners, either, if they slip up. It will be interesting to see which Arsenal turns up on Sunday! Prediction: Draw Last season: 0-2

Liverpool v Watford

With the Premier League fixture computer punishing English teams in Europe, Jurgen Klopp has put all his eggs in one basket, believing that winning the Europa league is Liverpool’s route to the Champions League, as opposed to chasing a top-four finish. But that dream could be over by the time they take to the field. Watford will be happy at finishing towards mid-table, ensuring Premier League status for next season. One or two clubs will be taking a look at some of their players during the transfer window. And should any depart, the job will be ensuring they are replaced with similar quality - or it could be a long season for them next time out. Prediction: Draw Last season: N/A

Weary CDT see the light Girona 1 CD Tenerife 0 By Roscoe ALL good things must come to an end, and Tenerife’s fine, unbeaten run is over. Ten games without defeat saw the Santa Cruz squad on the verge of the play-offs, but a sobering defeat at Girona has brought a large dose of reality.

Tenerife looked a little weary and, maybe, the run has taken it out of them. Their second trip to the mainland in a week could also have played a part. Or perhaps we should just face the facts that are staring us in the face: Girona were the better side. They looked it for long periods, although they needed a huge helping hand from the officials. I wrote last week that Tenerife have not been getting the rub of the green recently - and for a second straight week, they got a shocker from the flag-waver. In Cordoba, they had a perfectly good goal chalked off for offside. This time the linesman was either ball-watching or didn’t know the rules. And what really sticks in the craw is the return of the oldest truisms in football. It’s the “theyalways-come-back-tohaunt-you club”. We’ve all felt it. A player who was a donkey in your colours suddenly plays like Messi when he is with the opposition. This time it was Aday who, trust me, many fans would have forgotten he ever played for us. Signed from L’Hospitalet after two stunning matches against us in the 2013 play-offs, he was awful for CDT. In 13 games he never looked like scor-

ing. Maybe he was just homesick, because he has done well since joining Girona. On Sunday he came on at half-time and was bright. On the hour mark a deep, left-wing cross spelt danger. Dani is normally a strong goalie, but he flapped at this cross. It fell to Aday, 12 yards out. His side-foot effort looked like a shot, but it went straight towards Dejan Lekic. The veteran Serb couldn’t miss. But look at the screen grab. You can clearly see he is ridiculously offside when Aday strikes the ball. By the time it gets to Lekic, there are two defenders behind him and, maybe, that is what the linesman Victor Fernandez saw. In a season of poor decisions it was another shocker. Tenerife had a few half-chances. German should, perhaps, have scored with a free header in the first half, and Cristo’s late effort should have worked Isaac in the home net. Girona had more than enough chances to add a second, and there were no complaints from the Tenerife manager afterwards. Jose Marti said: “The effort was there and, maybe, we could have had a bit of luck. But we still have a chance to achieve the goal, and we focus on Elche.” And, as Vitolo said this

week, it’s now or never. “We have six games to play and every one is now a cup final. We knew it would be hard to make the play-offs but there is still belief. Elche are a very good side, and they are going very well. They are unbeaten in, I think, nine games, but so were we before Girona! This is a chance to beat a rival and I feel we can do this.” Vitolo’s point about Elche is a smart one. They were the bookies’ favourites to win this league at the start of the season, and that they are not in the top two with this squad is remarkable. They took some time to regroup after a financial relegation - it was not based on league positions - but they have now clicked and they are on fire. They have lost only at Real Oviedo and Girona since the end of November, which is some run. Their defence is solid, and they have the league’s hottest striker in Pedro Leon. He was one of a number of strikers linked with Tenerife after a decent campaign at Llagostera. But he went for the money at Elche and has been a revelation. The Spanish media have this week been full of transfer stories, claiming he has agreed a £4m move to an English club.

And Leon is the sort of player who would do well in the UK. He has 20 league goals but, crucially for Tenerife, he has scored only three away from home since Halloween. Position 1

CD Leganés

It was a similar story at Llagostera, where he netted just three away goals all season. And when he played for Elche reserves the season before that, he scored … in just three away matches!

Elche are bossed by the legendary Ruben Baraja, who was complimentary about Tenerife in the press conference this week. He said: “The key is the mental strength, because we must know how to control our emotions in this game. And we have to try to play our game to find the three points. “Tenerife are a strong team, with good ballplayers. They play good football and they have gone a long time without losing in their stadium. “We will demand a lot, no doubt. But we must keep our emotions in check.” Maybe Baraja is readying his side for an onslaught. Apart from the fact that there will be a large and noisy crowd, he must also know there is a bit of history between these two sides. There has been for a good few years! It’s a Saturday night 7.15pm kick-off under lights, and should be a cracker. Meanwhile, another hot prospect has been on trial this week. Tanzanian Farid Mussa, just 19, has been put through his paces. He must have done well because he will stay for another week - and will play a friendly for the B team at the start of the week.
