BANKS SET FOR MEGA MORTGAGE REFUNDS Continued from front The banks’ method is not illegal. Yet! But it could be deemed so on 12th July, when the European Court of Justice (ECJ) convenes to make its preliminary conclusions on the controversial Clausula Suelo (floor clause) mortgage - a collaborative scheme involving several banks, which blocks interest rates from falling below a certain price. At the moment, the affected banks have been ordered to repay the excessive sums (plus interest) made by home-owners for a period of exactly three years, dating back to the Supreme Court’s initial judgement of 9th May 2013. It meant that the retroactive limit was fixed on that date and could not be extended further back. But many mortgage holders and legal experts thought that line in the sand was wrong. They argued that the reclaim should go back further. And their thinking has been mirrored in the law courts. The ECJ will already be aware that a judge, sitting in the Oviedo Court, in the autonomous region of Asturias, ruled on a particular mortgage that if the Clausula Suelo has been “declared void, it is null from the very beginning and cannot be limited in time”. The same decision was taken last April by Santander’s Mercantile Court 1, forcing Banco Popular to refund 2,707 euros to one house-holder from September 2009 (not from May 2013). In any case, it seems

that the ECJ will take into account the European Commission report, stating that there should be full retro-activity. The EC report adds: “It is not possible for domestic Courts to moderate the devolution of sums paid by the customer, due to the application of a clause that has been declared null and void from the origin, due to the lack of information and transparency.” The 40-plus banks involved are wriggling every which way to save their skins, because millions upon millions of euros, literally, will be lost immediately - and in future returns - if the ECJ rules against them. If you are uncertain about which type of mortgage you have - one based solely on the Euribor (the official European bank rate), Fixed, Variable or Clausula Suelo, just ask your bank for clarification. Banks should charge, as standard, between 0.75% and 1% above the Euribor interest rate. Banco Sabadell charge Euribor plus 1%, while Banco Santander’s rate is Euribor plus 1.49%. The key to a claim is the controversial Clausula Suelo mortgage. If you have already been contacted by your bank, offering an enticinglylow, fixed-rate interest on your mortgage, that tells everything, so beware! It means you hold Clausula Suelo version, and the bank, trying to wriggle out of coughing up all the extra euros you’ve already paid since signing the mortgage contract, wants

you to sign a disclaimer. Myra Cecilia, who represents the Citizens Advice Bureau, Spain, said: “We know that a certain bank is now contacting its home-owner clients and offering to remove the clause if they sign for a fixed-rate mortgage - and sign away their rights to make claims for repayments of the excess they’ve already paid. “With the Euribor at lower than zero, the bank is offering a fixed rate at, wait for it; 2.150%, when, in reality, the Euribor rate for this month will, on average, be minus 0.32%. “The bank has provided clients with a Euribor forecast for the next 12 months, and its chart, conveniently, shows it 2% for May.” She was backed up by a Canarian Weekly reader, who told us this week of her surprise at receiving a phone call in April from her bank manager - they’ve never even met - offering a near-2%, fixed-rate drop in her mortgage, saving all of 25 euros a month! His call was followed up, almost immediately, by an email spelling out the deal in full, and saying this bargain offer was valid until the end of the

month only - and that there was no need for her to attend the notary office. This alerted our reader immediately and, when she mentioned it to a neighbour, he said he’d heard of the Clausula Suelo. Needless to say, she has not been in touch with the bank since. Although the application of this clause is still lawful, it has been deemed “unfair” and “abusive” in most cases. A Madrid judge certainly thought so last week after ruling in favour of 15,000 house-holders with these controversial mortgages, but with bank repayments from May 2013 only. Whatever the Supreme Court outcome, as many as four million people in Spain could be affected - and who knows how many in Tenerife despite the benchmark Euribor interest-rate hitting historic lows. As has been reported in the Canarian Weekly this year, it has been in negative figures for the last three months. Ms Cecilia added: “The majority of those affected, who do not sign a bank’s disclaimer agreement, will be guaranteed the removal of the clause

and a full refund, if the Supreme Court agrees with the Oviedo verdict. “And even if they do sign a disclaimer, lawyers with expertise in this field say that even if a letter of agreement has been signed with the bank for the fixed rate and/or giving up your right to claim, this would more than likely be considered null and void by the courts. She added: “You have the option to litigate, anyway, using these expert lawyers, who have already enjoyed a 99% success rate. “I have been tracking the abusive floor clause since around 2007 with a law firm I collaborated with before the settingup of CAB Spain. “We have had many successes in removing the clause and seeing the mortgage-holders reimbursed. “And we are now awaiting the European Justice Courts to rule on the side of the consumers, thus giving them the right to claim the extra paid on their monthly repayments from the start of their contract.” In the latest of her regular online financial blogs, Ms Cecilia writes: “More than 40 Spanish banks added this “floor clause” into their mortgage contracts several years ago, stipulating that interest rates would not fall below a certain percentage, instead of following the Euribor-plus interest. “This clause was eventually deemed as ‘abusive’ by the courts in Spain, but only after the European courts ruled against this malpractice.

“It should have meant that all mortgage-holders who had this Clausula Suelo in their contracts, would have it removed, and a return the overpayments they made during many years because of the clause. But this was not to be the case, with the banks holding fast. “One bank alone, from doing the right thing by the consumer, would have lost over 33 million euros a month!” Canarian Weekly lawyer Mariano Zunino, who has been tracking this astonishing story from the start, and has dealt successfully with many judicial cases involving “abusive clauses”, says: “It is all about this ruling from the European Court. “The decision will affect, firstly, those processes still pending, as the European Court judgement will be binding for domestic judges, who will then rule according to the decision. “Secondly, it will be necessary to reconsider the cases with ‘final judgements’ and, I understand, they could be subject to a ‘revision appeal’. “As a matter of fact, in April 2016, the Supreme Court decided to suspend the proceeding of an appeal enacted by a bank regarding the ‘floor clause’ until the European Court’s final verdict.” The lawyer added: “We have to wait until the ECJ decision, of course, and how it will hit the Spanish banks, who could be forced to refund up to 7.6 billion euros.”

EU Referendum: Deadline to vote

BRITISH expats living in Spain have until deadline-day on Monday (16th May) to register for a postal vote in the UK’s in-out EU Referendum.

It will be the last chance to make sure you can receive your ballot papers in the post, and send them back in time for your vote to be counted. Voting papers will be sent out the following Monday (23rd May). If you do miss the postal-vote deadline, you can still register at www.gov.uk/registerto-vote - but you will need to choose someone in the UK to vote for you, known as a proxy vote. Alex Robertson, Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission, says: “If you register to vote by 16th May, it should be easier to vote by post. These postal votes for the referendum will be sent out earlier than usual, giving you more time to receive, com-

plete, and return your ballot pack to the UK. “If you wish to vote by proxy, bear in mind that the person you choose to vote on your behalf must be registered and eligible to vote at the Referendum.

“The EU Referendum is going to be a significant event, and we know lots of UK citizens will want to make their voices heard. “Please spread the word. You can go to w w w. a b o u t m y v o t e .

co.uk for more information.” British Ambassador Simon Manley adds: “I know there is a huge amount of interest among Brits in Spain in the EU Referendum. “Almost 100,000 people with Spanish

Beds galore Cristianos battling on the way back to normality THE tourist boom has local business licking their lips, but it has created one problem: there is a shortage of hotel beds and this problem needs to be addressed swiftly. In 2003, the Canarian Government adopted the Law of General Planning Guidelines and Tourism, which regulates the construction of new hotels. This was to safeguard the “beauty” of the islands and, since 2009, there has been just a handful of new projects signed off. But that is set to change. This week, the most restrictive of the rules of the Moratorium were eased, which will lead to more than

83,000 tourist beds getting the green light - the biggest commitment in 15 years. Between 1997 and 2000, construction saw 131,000 more hotel beds and in 2001, there were 350,000. This was in the key demographic of four and five-star hotels, plus the so-called three-key apartments. The property market crash and financial crisis shattered the construction industry. But the recent, financial turnaround, together with the new tourist explosion, has forced a rethink. New hotels are already being built in Costa Adeje and others will now follow.

IT has been a month since the building collapse in Los Cristianos, which claimed seven lives. The area is slowly getting back to normal and, over the next few days, the final demolition will begin. Arona City Hall’s Urban Development has given the go-ahead and Peter Martin Garcia, President of the Los Cristianos Association of Entrepreneurs, and a neighbour of an adjacent building, said that another building in the area might also have to be demolished. Arona Council has confirmed that a recruitment process for the job has already begun, and it hopes to appoint a demolition team

swiftly. The demolition could take up to three days, including the time taken to remove all the debris. Once this is finished, the area will be thoroughly cleaned and secured. It is only in the last few days that the judicial authority concluded their report in the area to determine the cause of the tragic event.

IP addresses have so far visited the government webpage, where you can register to vote. “Ultimately, it is for the British people to decide whether we should remain in or leave the European

Union. But whatever they think on the issue, I would appeal to my fellow-Brits in Spain not to miss the chance to have their say in this once-in-ageneration referendum.” Worldwide, more than 140,000 Brits living overseas have now completed the voterregistration process since the start of the year. But nearly half of British expats in Spain, who are eligible to vote in the UK, remain unaware that they can go online to register to vote, according to a survey by expat website AngloInfo, carried out for the Electoral Commission. In fact, you can apply online in five minutes with just your National Insurance number and passport to hand. Simply go to www.gov.uk/ register-to-vote by 16th May, and apply for your postal vote. Expats active on social media can use http://bit.ly/22zluRK as the short link to take other British residents in Spain to the “register to vote” webpage.

Billboards disappearing quickly IN March, the Cabildo agreed to the removal of 80 illegal billboards, which were on the motorway and some major roads.

These have been now taken down, the next wave is set to free-up the view, and this week’s Official Gazette of the Province (BOP) has listed another 40 billboards to be dismantled over the next 15 days. Miguel Becerra, the Cabildo’s Insular Director of Development, said the aim was, ultimately, to remove around 200 nonlegal displays on areas around the motorways. Becerra stressed that some companies own-

ing these spaces had filed objections to their withdrawal. They have a 15-day period after its publication in the Gazette to withdraw their billboards. “We estimate that during June, the procedure will be completed,” said Becerra. Although some companies have agreed to remove their installations, the Cabildo has noticed that some billboards dismantled in March have been put back up. Becerra said: “We are advising owners to stop this from recurring. They need to come down for a reason.” Those withdrawn in March were on the TF-5, TF-1 and TF-4. And the next batch will be taken from the TF-1, TF-5 and TF-2.

Tram-track firms to get 1.4m-euro boost

Internet set to speed up all over Tenerife ANTONIO Garcia Marichal, the Cabildo’s Innovation Minister, hopes the insular telecommunications ring will be completed within two years, which will enable the whole Island to enjoy the same internet speed and access.

“We are ready for the second phase, and, once awarded, the completion time is eight months,” he said. “So it will be completed by the end of next summer. The Minister added: “Then, with the backbone broken, the next phase of the project will be drawn up for last area of the motorway. “The Cabildo would take the bids in late 2016 and start work in the second half of 2017, and the core of the ring would be finished in two years. Marichal told the local press: “The section already finished is the fibre-optic section, which goes from La Laguna to Armeñime, in Adeje. “With fibre, which has been authorised by the Commission of Telecommunications, we will have all homes covered within four or five years. And we will have three operators, from

traditional telephone services Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange. “The intention is that each and every one of our houses will be able to offer a good internet connection and, above all, will offer an honest price and good quality, accordingly.” The Innovation Minister said this infrastructure “could have connections in about three or four years at a price of 17 or 25 euros, which is impossible today. “Many companies do not have 100 meg internet connection in the metropolitan area, and traditional operators do not invest in infrastructure by the volume on the Island. “And, having a million people, they have no chance to recover short-term investment needed to make it. “Therefore, we facili-

tate this deployment. We do the infrastructure and the operators rent and pay for the use of our network.” Marichal added: “there are already operators such as Orange and Vodafone, who are knocking at our door because they want to use our infrastructure to reach all the insular territory. “But as with fibre-optics, Tenerife is at the forefront. With this we create opportunities, for example, like Madrid, which has multioffers when accessing operators, and can develop new sectors and business activities. “We want e-commerce, and, with companies located in Tenerife and want to provide services abroad, everything is based on networks of broadband communication.”

TENERIFE Cabildo will allocate 1.4 million euros of European funds into the Integrated Project of Sustainable Urban Development (DUSI) to boost businesses next to the tram tracks. Development Director Miguel Becerra has already announced the extension of Line 2 towards Avenida de Los Majuelos, and the Cabildo’s next target is to support trade in these and other areas close to the rails of the Metropol-

itan Area. And Becerra believes that Santa Cruz Council, should, initially, grant tax credits to businesses in the Los Majuelos Avenue. He said the construction of this new section of track would take five years, adding: “We will divide the work in sectors and each one will host the works for five months, so the impact on different areas will not be so great.” The tram system, inaugurated on 2nd June 2007, runs over 12½ kilo-

metres, servicing over 46,000 people a day in the Metropolitan Area. And Line 2, which runs from La Cuesta to Tíncer, was introduced in May 2009. The commercial revitalisation of the Commercial Area Tram plan (ZCT) has seen the number of shops and outlets rise to around 1,000. They are all less than a five-minute walk from the tram and, since 2013, the figure has risen by about 100 shops each year.

Forest fires are the big summer threat WITH summer just around the corner and, after the driest winter for generations, there are real concerns that this year could see a plethora of forest fires.

In the next few days, temperatures of up to 30 degrees will increase the risk of forest fires in Spain. Authorities are ready, and they have special emphasis on the south, east and northwest of the Peninsula and parts of the Canary Islands, where the danger is extreme, according to meteorological agency (AEMET). In large areas of the provinces of Huelva, Cadiz, Seville, Malaga, Granada and Almeria, the risk is extreme as in areas of Mediterranean shores, such as Murcia and Alicante. In the north-west peninsular, the provinces of La Coruña and Pontevedra have extreme risk, as in areas of Asturias and Cantabria. And other parts of central and

northern peninsular, the risk is considered “very high” or “high”. For Raul de la Calle, Association of Forest Engineers General Secretary, the forestfire season in Spain can appear “bad”, because of, among other things, the abandonment of forestry and livestock activity, which involves the accumulation of large amounts of biomass. The fire expert insists that the rural crisis has caused the loss of rural roads through the invasion of weeds, and migration of rural people to cities, which

has degenerated into a loss of knowledge of rural territory, which is key to extinguishing a blaze. He has also stressed the importance of controlling agricultural and livestock tasks, which are usually behind most major forest fires. If the high temperatures in recent days - near 30 degrees - are added, it seems that the situation “could get worse”, added De la Calle. The April rains facilitate the growth of bushes and herbs and, with the arrival of the

summer, high temperatures dry out the weeds, which means the risk of large forest fires multiply. This weekend, the Meteorology Agency has forecast maximum ranges of 28-30 degrees in parts of the provinces of Almería, Badajoz, Caceres, Ciudad Real, Cordoba, Granada, Lugo, Ourense, Pontevedra, Seville, Toledo and Zaragoza. In Madrid, Guadalajara, Jaen, Lleida and Valladolid, the thermometer will rise to 27 degrees; and it will be about the same in the Canaries.

Canaries’ salaries have fallen behind THE average Canary Islands’ salary is 1,402 euros per month, which is 14.5% lower (238 euros) than the average mainland wage (1,640 euros) and the country’s secondlowest.

The Adecco Fourth Annual Wage Monitor reveals that in the last year, the Canarian wage grew by 1.1%, equivalent to 15 euros monthly, while the Spanish pay-packet went up 0.4%. The Canary Islands is one of six regions in which the average salary has increased over the past two years. The others are Madrid, Aragon, Cantabria, Murcia and Andalusia. But in real terms, the pay looks even worse. If you took the average salary in 2010 and looked at the 2016 equivalent salary in the Canary Islands, you will see how behind we are. Since 2010, the average Canaries’ wage has increased by just 0.1%, while Spain’s overall rise is 1.5%. For the first time since 1933, the Consumer Price Index in Spain and the Canary Islands has declined for the second successive year.

And this CPI drop has again hit those who work here, when compared with the national average. The fall in consumer prices has boosted the purchasing power in the Canaries by 1.9%, its second consecutive annual increase. However, when the purchasing power of the average wage is analysed from 2010 to the present, the result for the archipelago is negative. In fact, the average Canarian salary has lost 3.8% of its purchasing power, while the country as a whole is 4.5% better off. In monetary terms, this deterioration is equivalent to 55 euros per month in the Canary Islands, against the 78 euros extra for the whole of Spain. This means that for the average pay in the Canaries to recover the purchasing power it had in 2010, it should be increased by 55 euros a month. Of the three major economic sectors (industry, construction and services), the industrial sector remains the one offering the highest salaries in the Canary Islands, with 1,520 euros per month. The figure exceeds the regional average by 8.5%, or 118 euros monthly.

Tourists keep piling in TOURISM Tenerife has unveiled another impressive set of figures for the first quarter of 2016, attracting 108,652 more holidaymakers than in the same 2015 period. That added up to the Island actually welcoming a total of 1,345,607 visitors, which was an 8.8% advance. Most tourists stayed in hotels: 916,751 customers opted for the hotel sector, compared with 428,856 who chose apartments. Of the 108,652 new tourists, 99,391 were housed in hotels, representing an annual growth of 12.2%. The total number of overnight-stays grew by 5.2%, totalling 10,653,086 in all.

And though the overall average stay on the Island fell slightly from 8.18 days to 7.92 days, occupancy increased 6% and went up from 69.8% in the 2015 period to 73.9% - and 81.3% in the case of hotels. All Tenerife destinations have improved their figures this quarter. The largest growth occurred in La Laguna-Bajamar-La Punta, where the volume of people staying swelled by 24.8%. The area received more than 2,311 extra tourists to total 11,613 in all. In Santa Cruz, the number of visitors staying increased by 15%, representing a rise of 8,696 tourists, compared with 2015. And in

the first three months of the year, 66,658 people were housed in the capital. Puerto de la Cruz enjoyed a 13.9% growth, which meant 24,048 tourists more. This expansion puts the figure at 196,625 holidaymakers staying there in a three-month period. In absolute terms, the Adeje destination for tourists grew the most, the borough receiving 31,059 people more than a year ago. In percentage terms, the increase remains at 7.4% and, in total, it housed 453,374 tourists between January and March. The Arona figures, with 27,105 more tourists in this quarter, grew by 7.7%, the accommo-

dation facilities hosting 380,709 people. And in this period, Adeje hosted 33.6% of visitors who chose Tenerife; Arona around 28%, and Puerto de la Cruz almost 15%. Santa Cruz had under 5% of total tourists, while La Laguna failed even to entice 1%. Of the 1,345,607 tourists who selected Tenerife in the first quarter, 1,040,526 stayed in the South, 226,810 in the North and 78,271 in the metropolitan area. In percentage terms, the South captured 77.4% of the total tourist numbers visiting the island; the North had 16.8%, with just 5.8%. split between Santa Cruz and La Laguna.

Euro 2016 blackout? SPANISH broadcasters and UEFA are still negotiating for the TV rights to show football’s Euro 2016, which starts on 10th June in Paris.

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

EU decide THIS week saw the starting pistol being fired, ahead of the EU referendum in June. It has been bubbling for a while, but the gloves are well and truly off now.

Some of the mudslinging would look embarrassing in a school playground. From this issue, we will showcase the views from both sides. On pages 18 and 19, you will find expert opinions which, over the next few weeks, will help you reach a decision on how you want to vote. Talking of which, as you will see on Page 4, you are running out of time to register to vote. If you are eligible to vote, do not delay. Every vote counts. What I have found interesting over the last month or so is just how hard it is to change any voting intentions.

I haven’t yet met anyone who has swapped buses. There is always one topic which stirs the passion and forces the last stand. Debate on how we live our lives, politics and the future is a great thing. I’m sure our new interest in politics started with the Scotland referendum. In Spain, there are now four major parties, and I’ve a feeling the days are numbered for the two-party system in America. In the UK, whatever happens in June, there are the seeds of a new landscape. IF, and it’s a big IF, the vote is to leave, then the Conservatives will split. Many will join whatever the UKIP guys will call themselves. And don’t rule out a tearing of the Labour party either. The Lib Dems have long gone, so we could even see four major bodies in the next decade or two.

Defending champions Spain begin their defence three days later against the Czech Republic, and fans still do not know whether the match - or any other for that matter - will be televised live. But the Spanish Government has recalled a law, guaranteeing the national team’s matches being shown as they happen. Under the same decree that changed the model of gaining TV rights for La Liga, sanctioned in May 2015, the law states that the showing of public-interest events must be guaranteed by the public broadcaster. The public-interest sports events, defined in the audio-visual law from 2011, include all the official games of the national football team,

plus the semi-finals and finals of both the UEFA European and the FIFA World Cup. It means that if no private broadcaster reaches an agreement with UEFA, some games will be shown free-to-air (FTA) through RTVE who have actually withdrawn from the bidding because the cost is too high! But how the Spanish Government would secure payment for the rights, especially as the public broadcaster do not have the budget for such an investment, is anyone’s guess. In the meantime, less than a month ahead of

kick-off, Spain’s FTA and pay-TV broadcasters await for a final decision from the European football organisation, who haven’t yet decided whether the current bids for TV rights are high enough. Differences between UEFA aspirations and Spanish broadcasters have been marked, but both parties are now hoping to close a deal shortly, to appease fans, brands and sponsors. The main sticking point, as usual, is money. With Mediaset still remembering how their huge investment in broadcasting rights for the last World Cup

failed, because holders Spain went out in the first round, other broadcasters have been reluctant to pay UEFA’s 70meuro asking price. Mediaset, who offered 45m, appeared to have withdrawn from negotiations, along with RTVE. Atresmedia, the other major free-to-air (FTA) group, are still looking to convince UEFA that their channels are the best offer. Meanwhile, pay-TV operators are also involved in the tender, but they have to ensure at least 23 games are broadcast free-to-air, which is one of UEFA’s requirements for Euro 2016.

La Caleta hotel, set to wow!

RESIDENTS and visitors to La Caleta have been watching a new hotel being built, right in front of their eyes, and a few more details have now been revealed. Barcelo Hotels & Resort Group has chosen Adeje’s La Caleta as

its first luxury resort in the Canaries. The hotel will have 121 exclusive suites for adults and 114 apartments for family tourism. The development cost around 90 million euros and involves the creation of over 300 new

JOB offers increased 18% in the Canary Islands last year, according to data from the Infojobs and Esade business school.

Jobs boost for the Canarians

This improvement has resulted in a total of 24,982 vacancies being filled, according to the information gathered by the platform dedicated to bringing together employment professionals. The commercial and sales professional category is the first vacancy sector, with 7,464 posi-

tions offered in 2015 (9% less than the previous year). This decline does not reflect that companies continue to rely on the strength of sales to overcome the crisis, because the second place is the customer category, which has grown by 28%, with 3,802 new positions. The increase in vacan-

jobs. It will be called the Coral Beach Resort and should open in the middle of next year. There will be three communal swimming pools and 51 private ones, along with four restaurants and three bars. And Barceló says

cies has been observed in virtually all occupational categories, including legal, education and training, public administration, quality, production and R & D, IT plus telecommunications and commercial and sales. The report also shows that 33% of the Canary Islands candidates have attended university.

it is also considering buying a beach club. The new resort, situated on a 33,000sq/m plot, will take to 14 the number of Barcelo hotels in the islands. Officials say this latest project “strengthens its commitment to expansion and the new establishment of La Caleta will open, along with another new project in Corralejo, Fuerteventura”. The resort will accommodate families, and Barcelo said: “These developments help us contribute to the development of tourism in the Canary Islands. “We already have several establishments on Gran Canaria and Tenerife, and on Lanzarote, where we reopened the Teguise Beach in Costa Teguise last summer.”

Canarian Government owes up to 38m in housing grants THE Canary Islands Government has failed to pay housingassistance grants totalling between 32 and 38 million euros, resulting in genuine financial hardship for many.

The unpaid grants, which date from 2009 to 2012, has left thousands of victims in the islands in trouble. The Ministry of Social Policy, Employment and Housing has calculated the sum needed to pay these grants in a multiyear payment plan but there is a problem. Jose Gregorio Perez, director of the Canarian Institute of Housing (Icavi), insisted this week that the debt, incurred by the previous administration, could not be paid “due to the cuts by the state budget”. The official said the grants were mainly mortgage assistance for young workers and

Youngsters get drink message Perez, who says his department has met with a committee of those affected, hopes to find 1.4m in June. But that would still be 1.6m euros below the total sum for which those affected are pushing. If a payment plan is not accepted, the Department will have no choice but to try to take some of the money from the 2017 budget. Some of those affected are owed money dating back nearly seven years. And there is another problem. During the years which have elapsed since the process began, some claimants have exceeded the age limit for receiving aid.

And, while others have improved their economic situation, they are still struggling to repay loans they have taken out since the grants were not paid. Carla Darias, a spokesperson for those affected, is not too optimistic, saying: “During this time we have felt deceived. Some people have had no help and, without being able to pay the rent or the mortgage, have ended up losing their home. “Others have been offered a personal loan by the bank for the amount of aid due, and they find themselves with a mortgage in arrears and a loan with a high interest rate.”

IT seems as though the message is getting through to the younger sector of our society. Consumption of alcohol, tobacco, sleeping pills and cannabis among the Canary Islands youth is on the decrease. These facts, which emerged from the latest Archipelago survey of adolescents, aged between 14-18, were unveiled by Ricardo Redondas, general director of Public Health and regional Ministry of Health. The number of highschool, drug-use students in the Islands is below the average in Spain. But the survey also shows that three out of four youngsters admit to trying alcohol,

and 30% have smoked a cigarette. According to the Public Health chief, around 60% admit to drinking alcohol in the last month, and two out of 10 have smoked in the last 30 days - an average of 6.1 cigarettes. In both cases, the kids start at around 14 years, and 8.7% have also tested e-cigarettes. Redondas also warned about the rise in bingedrinking. He says that description applies when a minimum of five cans or glasses in two hours has been polished off. He reported that about 25% of the survey’s young people, between 14-18 years, acknowledged having binged in the last month. And 40% of students say they have

been drunk at least once. The survey, called Estudes, was first published in 1994 and is now released every two years in Spain. This latest probe discovers that cannabis is the third-most-prevalent drug among students in the Archipelago, after alcohol and tobacco. Redondas said that 25% of young people had smoked at least one joint, and 15.7% had used cannabis in the last month. Estudes also questioned the use of prescription drugs, saying that 15% of children between 14-18 admit to having swallowed a tranquilliser or sleeping pill - 5.3% during the last month.

Deadly curry down to ‘reckless’ owner A RESTAURANT owner, who “put profit before safety”, has been accused of killing a customer who died from an allergic reaction to a curry, a court has heard.

Paul Wilson, 38, suffered a severe anaphylactic shock in January 2014 after eating a takeaway from the Indian Garden restaurant in Easingwold, North Yorkshire. Mohammed Zaman, 52, of Aylesham Court, Huntington, denies manslaughter, and has also pleaded not guilty to perverting the course of justice, and six foodsafety offences. But Teesside Crown Court heard that the restaurant boss “cut corners at every turn”. When Mr Wilson ordered a takeaway meal from the restaurant, he was adamant it had to be nut-free, the jury heard. The court was told that “no nuts” had been written on the order chit, and on the lid of the curry he took to his home in Helperby, near Thirsk. Tragically, he was found dead later the same evening. The jury heard that Mr Zaman took a “reckless and cavalier attitude to risk” at the restaurants he owned. Richard Wright QC, prosecuting, told the

court Mr Zaman had switched from using almond powder to the cheaper groundnut powder, containing peanuts, in June 2013. Despite a warning from his supplier, said the prosecutor, the restaurateur did not warn customers he was using peanut ingredients. A week before Mr Wilson’s death, Mr Wright said a trading standards officer found evidence of peanuts in another meal, which was said to have been peanutfree, and discovered a box labelled blanched ground-peanut in the kitchen of Mr Zaman’s Jaipur Spice restaurant in Easingwold. The court heard that the trading-standards’ officer told staff that all customers had to be informed that chefs were using peanuts. “Mohammed Zaman received numerous warnings that he was putting his customers’ health, and potentially their lives, at risk,” said the prosecutor. “Tragically for Paul Wilson, Mohammed Zaman took none of those opportunities and ignored all of the warnings he was given.” The prosecution said the restaurateur knew the food he served “posed a serious health risk”. Mr Wright added: “Time and again, he ignored the danger and did not protect his customers.”

Franco’s victims exhumed at last THE exhumation of bodies from the “Valley of the Fallen” has been authorised for the first time by a Spanish court.

The “Valley” is actually a vast mausoleum where dictator General Franco is buried, along with thousands of victims of Spain’s civil war. In September 2015, 58-year-old María Purificación Lapeña asked a court in El Escorial, near Madrid, where the mausoleum is located, to order the exhumation of her grandfather Manuel Lapeña Altabas and her great-uncle Antonio Lapeña Altabas so they could be given a proper funeral. The two men, both members of an anarchist group, were executed by Franco’s forces at the out-

set of Spain’s 1936-39 civil war and buried in a mass grave in the north-eastern region of Aragon. Their remains were transferred in 1959 without the consent of their family - to the Valley of the Fallen, which became Franco’s final resting spot after he died in 1975. The court, in a ruling dated 30th March but published only on Monday, ordered the “return of the remains of the Lapeña Altabás to their relative María Purificación Lapeña after they are identified, so that they can be given a proper burial”. The Valley of the Fallen, built under Franco’s r e g i m e

between 1940-1958 in the granite mountains of the Sierra de Guadarrama, holds the remains of over 30,000 civil war dead from both sides of the conflict. The site, where Franco lies buried behind the high altar of a vast basilica hewn into the rock, has long been a rallying point for the far right in Spain. The remains of tens of thousands of other victims of the civil war, as well as of the repression of the rightwing Franco regime that followed, remain scattered in unmarked mass graves across the country. A Historical Mem-

ory Law, passed in 2007 by Spain’s previous Socialist government, allows relatives to exhume and recover the remains of loved ones in mass graves, and it calls for public funds to be provided to help cover the costs. But funding for such projects dried up after the conservative Popular Party government was elected in 2011. This is the first time a court has authorised the exhumation of bodies at the Valley of the Fallen, said Lapeña’s husband, Miguel Angel Capapé, a member of campaign group Arico, which works to identify bodies from mass graves. He added: “This has been years of work, of going from one court to another. Finally, a door has opened and we can see the end of the road.”

BIGGET STING OF ALL! POLICE who raided two fake jellyfish workshops in eastern China believe that local food markets have been swamped with more than 10 tonnes of the fish. Jellyfish - the real thing - is extremely popular, sliced and served as salad, particularly along the southern and eastern coasts of China. But Huzhou municipal police, in Zhejiang province, say the dodgy jellyfish was made by mixing chemicals, and that checks showed it included high levels of aluminium. They first found a

workshop run by a Mr Yuan, who made and sold the fake jellyfish at a farmer’s market. He then led detectives to a bigger workshop in Changzhou city, in neighbouring Jiangsu province, run by a Mr Jia, who had taught him the “art” of faking

jellyfish. He was detained alongside other syndicate members, who made more than £18,100 profit in a year of production, Mr Yuan told the investigators he made the jellyfish by mixing three chemicals - alginic acid, ammonium alum and

calcium chloride anhydrous - according to an official release, written in Chinese by Huzhou police on social media platform WeChat. Officers said they found “excessive levels” of aluminium in the fake jellyfish - up to 800mg/kg, which is eight times the country’s legal limit. The food-and-drugsafety branch of Huzhou police said too much aluminium could result in bone and nerve damage, and could also, potentially harm memory. They warned against pregnant women, children and the elderly

consuming the substance. Although jellyfish can be poisonous, they are considered something of a delicacy in China, described as both tasty and a good source of collagen, especially popular in the summer. But it seems that the wild-jellyfish supply simply cannot cope with the demand. Zhejiang’s Metropolitan Express has reported on jellyfish farms in the province, fish farmers telling the newspaper that a halfkilo of jellyfish takes 40 days to raise, with the wholesale price at around £3-4.

This cost is halved with artificial jellyfish and for obvious reasons, the production time is far less. This is not the first fake jellyfish bust because in November 2014, the same Huzhou police force caught three individuals selling fake jellyfish made from a similar chemical mixture. And 13 months earlier, police in central Hunan province broke another jellyfish syndicate. That group was said to have made 40 tonnes of the fake stuff, and the ringleader was imprisoned for six months.

Bomb-scare flier Missing ‘mum’-man is held by police A TRAVELLER with Ryanair frightened the life out of other passengers, enroute to Spain from Tenerife, when he ran down a packed plane claiming he would detonate a bomb.

Spanish newspapers reported that he had caused a commotion when stewards refused to serve him a beer. Witnesses say the man was “visibly agitated” and ran down the aisle screaming, leading to a full-scale emergency. Local newspaper El Correo Gallego said the man rose from his seat and ran down the aisle shouting: “there’s a bomb! It’s going to explode!” But several passengers confirmed the man actually said: “I’m going to detonate a bomb because they won’t serve me beer.” Pilots contacted the control tower as the

cornered in Denmark

plane came into land at Santiago de Compostela. It was then directed to a secluded part of the Lavocolla airport. The man was arrested immediately the plane came to a halt, and his luggage was searched. The plane was promptly surrounded by the Guardia Civil and firefighters, and passengers were told to remain in their seats. A Ryanair spokesperson said: “The flight crew requested police assistance upon landing after a passenger became disruptive inflight. He was removed and detained by police. “We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour at any time. The safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our No.1 priority.”

SIMON Corner, whose Scottish partner went missing in Spain six months ago, has been arrested in Denmark after being sought by police for most of that period. Lisa Brown, a 32-year-old mother originally from Alex-

andria in West Dunbartonshire, worked in Gibraltar and was last seen in November. She had lived in Spain since she was 18 and Mr Corner, believed to have been detained in Copenhagen on a European arrest warrant, is expected to be

extradited to Spain. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We are providing assistance to a British man arrested in Denmark.” Ms Brown’s family travelled to Spain to help with police searches and also set up social media sites

to appeal for information. A post on the Find Lisa Facebook page said: “We still appeal to anyone who may know any information, or the whereabouts of Lisa, to please contact the Guardia or police.”

Scam gang rounded up after a fortune is stolen

SOME 44 suspects, one in Britain and the rest in Spain, who were said to be involved in a scam to hack into company bosses’ bank accounts and stealing thousands of euros, have been arrested by police. They are believed to have taken part in the so-called “CEO swindle”, and 17 members of the group are thought to be the ringleaders. The largest single sum reaped by the fraud was an astonishing 1.8 million euros. The scam, allegedly, concerned forged emails,

duping senior company executives into parting with personal details, which were then used to empty their financial accounts. The man arrested in Britain was detained close to an airport, where the gang were said to

have hoarded large sums of cash before having the haul transported to Nigeria. Seven people, running an Internet cafe in the Madrid region, are also suspected of having organised weekly transfers of cash to Nigeria by plane. Police said in a statement: “A total of 135,000 euros in notes was discovered at Madrid airport, hidden in rubbish bags and concealed among underwear in a suitcase, destined to travel in the hold of the

aircraft.” Several Spanish businessmen, suspected of helping the syndicate to launder the stolen funds, were among those arrested, according to police. The investigation began at the end of 2014, when a Pakistani citizen reported that he had been robbed of 34,000 euros after his bank account had been hacked. Police refused to comment on the nationality of the suspects, or when the operation to arrest them actually took place.

3 Kidnapped reporters freed Brother is killed in Cheeseburger row A FLORIDA man who admitted killing his older brother in an argument over a c h e e s e b u r g e r, has been charged with murder.

Police say Benjamin Middendorf shot his sibling in the chest with a 9mm hand-gun last Thursday night in St Cloud, Minnesota, some 28 miles south of Orlando. The 25-year-old was held on Saturday on charges of first-degree, pre-meditated murder. The altercation began when the 28-year-old victim, Nicholas Middendorf, their mother and a third man returned to the home

from a night out, according to a police report. “I just shot my brother on accident,” said Benjamin, in a recording of the call released by police. “We were in a fight and I grabbed a gun and I shot him. Oh God! I’m so sorry.” Nicholas was pronounced dead at the scene, and a woman’s voice could be heard on the 911 call saying: “I hope you go to jail.” St Cloud Police Department spokesperson Denise Roberts told Bay News 9: “This is an impulsive incident that happened. Maybe anger, rage. “But it was definitely over a verbal dispute that, sadly, was about a cheeseburger.”

THREE Spanish war reporters, kidnapped last July in the wartorn Syrian city of Aleppo, have returned safely to Spain.

Antonio Pampliega, José Manuel López and Ángel Sastre, whose release was announced on Saturday, stepped off a Defence Ministry plane at Torrejón airbase, near Madrid, on Sunday morning after being flown from southern Turkey. The trio, visibly tired and emotional, were being greeted by government officials when Mr Pampliega’s sister ran across the rainswept tarmac, screaming as she hugged her brother. They went missing on 12th July near the city of Aleppo, in northern

Syria after travelling to report on the war there. Reports suggested they had been kidnapped by al-Nusra Front, a group linked to al-Qaeda, fighting in Syria. But it is unclear whether the three had been traded to another group. Spanish government sources said the co-operation of Turkey and Qatar had been crucial in securing their release. Spain’s CNI secret service was reported to have been informed regularly that the men were still alive. The three passed on messages, responding to questions from relatives which only they could answer, or were filmed saying the date. In a brief interview with EFE news agency, the journalists said they had been confined in at least six houses.

Mr López said that after three months of captivity, Mr Pampliega was taken elsewhere. The three were reunited only on Saturday when they were released. The men said they had been kept in small rooms, just big enough for exercise, but they could not tell whether they had remained in Aleppo throughout. According to the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, the experienced, freelance reporters went missing on 13th July last year as they travelled through Aleppo in a van. Their Syrian translator, also taken hostage, was released shortly after. For a while, the Spaniards were held hostage alongside missing Japanese journalist Jumpei Yasuda, who was seized at around the same time.

Mr Pampliega’s mother, María del Mar Rodríguez Vegam, told the Reporters Without Borders association: “When I spoke to him by telephone, it was wonderful. “He had the same voice as when he was a child and he kept saying sorry for what he had put me through.” In 2014, three other Spanish journalists were freed after being held hostage by Syrian extremists for months. The Spanish Government is believed to have paid a ransom for their release, as it has in several other cases in which Spaniards have been kidnapped by jihadi groups. But in August 2014, the Islamic State group decapitated James Foley, an American journalist seized in northern Syria in 2012.

Staff takeaway! A CHINESE magnate doesn’t do things by half when he wants to thank his staff he has forked out more than £5million to treat 2,500 of them to a free holiday to Spain.

Li Jinyuan chartered 20 planes, booked 1,650 hotel rooms and also hired 70 coaches and four high-speed trains to take them on sightseeing trips around Madrid, Barcelona and Toledo. The more-than-generous tycoon even took his staff on a free shopping expedition for them to buy clothes, watches and jewellery. He also treated them to meals in a string of top restaurants, and arranged a private tour of Madrid’s Royal Palace.¡ Li Jinyuan, recently voted one of the most influential entrepreneurs in China, set up direct-sales firm Tiens in 1996, originally dealing in the export of tra-

THE hunt has been resumed for Ben Needham, the youngster who went missing almost 25 years ago on the islands of Kos.

A group of British police officers arrived on the island this week, searching for new witnesses into the disappearance of the then 21-month-old Sheffield toddler, who travelled there with his mother and grandparents. Over the years there have been a number of possible sightings and a range of theories about what happened to Ben, who would now be 26. Earlier this year, South Yorkshire Police received extra funding from the Home Office to help in the search. Now, a new, official campaign to find Ben, headed by his mother, Kerry, was confirmed when a team of officers were flown to Kos on Tuesday. A statement, Help

ditional Chinese medicinal products, calcium tablets and instant coffee. Since then, it has grown into a multi-national conglomerate, operating in biotechnology, logistics, finance,

property, international trade, retail, e-business, education and tourism. He is estimated to be worth at least 5.6bn dollars and is ranked as China’s 33rd-richest person. This is not the first

time he has surprised his staff with a free trip. Last year, he sent 6,400 employees on a four-day tour of France, booking 140 hotels in Paris and more than 4,700 rooms in Cannes and Monaco. During the trip, the employees wrote themselves into the Guinness Book of Records by forming themselves into the longest-ever human phrase, spelling out: “Tiens’ dream is nice in the Cote D’Azur.” That holiday included a private viewing of the Louvre museum - and a mass visit to the Moulin Rouge cabaret show. This year’s trip also included his staff’s public show of support, though not on such a grand scale. The 2,500 staff joined together in Madrid to hold aloft a huge banner, measuring 100m x 60m and weighing over 500kg to cheer the terms “Peace’ and ‘Progress”. Li Jinyuan, who came from a humble family and started work at 16, sends out regular messages of support to his staff and says: “Gratitude is the key to life!”

Cabildo to launch home-care service

TENERIFE Cabildo, along with the Institute of Social Care and Geriatric Help (IASS), are working on the launch of a service for new home-care.

It is for those people on the waiting list for a residential bed, and those who have no other public aid, or the resources to finance these services themselves. The new pilot scheme will, initially, serve about 50 people, and the initiative aims to improve care across the board. A main factor is the raising of sanitary requirements, an alleviation of the family

burden - and a shorter waiting time. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, said: “Dependent people and their families are not responsible for the administrative delays and, therefore, the Cabildo cannot ignore situations we consider very important. “There are people who have been waiting a very long time for financial aid, or services to which they are entitled.” Alonso said the Cabildo plans to conduct this pilot action, which will help about 50 people initially, with a possibility of expanding very soon. “This way, we get to assist dependants and their families until they meet the requested resources,” he added.

Search for missing Ben goes on again

Find Ben Needham, has been released in Los, urging islanders to come forward with any information which might help the case. The boy had been taken to a site in the tiny village of Iraklis by his grandmother, Christine Needham, to visit his grandfather, who was helping to renovate a run-down farmhouse. Police have been con-

ducting door-to-door inquiries in search of any knowledge, and Ms Needham said: “We believe someone on Kos does know something - and if they do, please come forward. It doesn’t matter how insignificant they think it is - if they have information, let the police know.” In January last year, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commis-

sioner Alan Billings secured £700,000 of special funding from the Home Office to allow South Yorkshire Police to commit further resources to the investigation into Ben’s disappearance. This year, a further £450,000 was approved by the Home Secretary. The Home Office backed a South Yorkshire Police operation in 2012, when land was excavated on Kos, near to where Ben went missing. But no trace of the little boy was found. Two years later, South Yorkshire Police asked the Home Office for the Special Grant Funding to follow up information which, the family believed, had never been investigated properly. In May last year, Ben’s mother, sister and grandmother travelled

to Greece with South Yorkshire Police detectives to make a direct appeal on a Greek television show about missing people. British officers and two sniffer dogs visited Kos to excavate and search for remains of Ben at the Iraklis farmhouse, without success. But police did investigate a number of new lines of inquiry as a result of the programme and the ongoing investigation. A spokesman said the detectives there now are “actively progressing lines of inquiry, distributing leaflets and posters, and carrying out house-to-house visits in Iraklis”. Detective Inspector Jon Cousins added: “The lives of Ben Needham’s family were ripped apart when he disappeared more than 20 years

ago, and their determination to find him has not diminished. They are more desperate than ever to find answers about what happened to him. “It is likely that someone out there knows what happened to him, and we are appealing to people in Kos who have information to come forward and tell us what they know. “The force is working closely with the Greek authorities to ensure a number of lines of existing inquiry are explored. “We are also hoping that the offer of a Crimestoppers’ reward of up to £10,000 could be an incentive for someone to finally come forward after all these years. “It is not too late to tell us what happened and, finally, allow us to unearth the truth.”

Del Boy producer dies GARETH Gwenlan, the former producer of BBC TV’s now-legendary Only Fools and Horses, has died at the age of 79. He was awarded an OBE in 2013.

Mr Gwenlan, as head of comedy for the BBC from 1983 until 1990, was responsible for commissioning a number of classic series, including Yes Prime Minister, Bread, Blackadder, ‘Allo ‘Allo, One Foot In The Grave, Birds of a Feather and Keeping Up Appearance. The Welshman, born in born in Brecon, Powys, also produced and directed High Hopes for BBC Wales. During his tenure, the department won the Best Comedy at the Bafta Awards every year, and counted three Emmys among its other honours But Gareth admitted he could blunder, trying on one occasion to persuade the One Foot In The Grave producer that Richard Wilson was not the right choice for the role of Victor Meldrew. As a producer/director, he collected 12 Bafta nominations and two Academy awards. He was also awarded a Royal Television Society Fellowship in 1997, as well as winning six other industry awards that year, and in 1998 he was elected a fellow of the Welsh College of Music and Drama. When he produced the Christmas “Fools” trilogy in 1996, more than 20 million viewers tuned in to watch Del

Boy and Rodney finally become millionaires. Mr Gwenlan was born on a farm in Brecon and was brought up by his widowed mother and grandparents in Cefn Coed, near Merthyr Tydfil. He trained as an actor and teacher at drama school after national service and was, initially, a theatre director in York and Derby. He joined the BBC drama department in 1965 before moving to comedy two years later. There, he was responsible for The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, To The Manor Born and Butterflies in the mid Seventies, all hits in a golden age for situation comedy. He attributed working with Leonard Rossiter on Reginald Perrin as his first big break. “It was a success, and the rest of my career sort of fell in behind it,” he recalled. Gareth, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Bafta Cymru after 50 years in the business, said he had never had to work very hard. “I’ve been paid all my life to indulge in my hobby,” he said, modestly. Rhodri Talfan Davies, Director of BBC Cym-

ru Wales, called him “one of Britain’s finest comedy producers - a pioneer, a perfectionist, adding: “What finer legacy than to know you brought happiness to millions.” Only Fools and Horses actress Sue Holderness, who played Boycey’s wife, Marlene, tweeted: “So sad to hear about Gareth Gwenlan - such a big part of my professional life. RIP.” High Hopes actor Robert Blythe paid tribute, saying: “Gareth was hugely successful, and rightly so, in the field of situation comedy. He was the man who knew more about it than anyone else alive. He will be sadly missed.” Boyd Clack, who cowrote the six series of High Hopes, which Mr Gwenlan produced, said: “Gareth set the standard for the genre of situation comedy by the quality of the shows he did. “He told me that High Hopes was the third-favourite show that he’d every done, which, when you look at the shows he did - I presume Only Fools and Reginald Perrin were his favourites was very benevolent of him.”

Sexual equality hasn’t yet reached workplace SEXUAL equality may be the norm on the streets, but it doesn’t appear to be filtering into the workplace.

Labour inspectors recorded 898 complaints in the courts for breaches of equality between 2008 and 2015, it was revealed this week. In 2007, the Law on Effective Equality between women and men was entered into the law books, and this has led to the number of cases, says the Ministry of Employment. The Ministry has also had to intervene on 4,082 occasions to combat inequality and discrimination against women regarding access to work, responsibilities at home, motherhood, salary-equality, career-advancement, employment- extinction, prevention of occupational hazards, and equality plans. In addition to the Equality Act, a cooperation agreement between the Canarian Equality Institute (ICI) and the Canarian Government’s Directorate General of Labour was approved in 2012. In practice, this agreement means that, periodically, several meetings between the Directorate and ICI are held to publicise vari-

ous campaigns on those matters, and to establish new ideas and processes of co-operation and co-ordination. Women victims of any cases of discrimination or harassment can report the situation anonymously to avoid any kind of retaliation, says the ICI. The workers of this organisation counsel victims seeking help from their units. Inspection work on equality has become more important during the years of economic difficulties. The crisis has led to an increase in unemployed women, and many victims are afraid to denounce for fear of losing their jobs. Marián Franquet, Canarian Institute of Equality director, believes one of the most effective ways to ensure that women have equal opportunities for employment is to remove the “optionality” of paternity-leave measures. “Right now, you have a paternity leave that is optional, and much lower than with women,” she said. “If you are an entrepreneur and you have two profiles, with two people who have children or raise them, you tend to hire the man. “If those same men had rights and were also required, we could objectify criteria when hiring. Then we could be on an equal footing.”

Ground-breaking anti-paedo drug? SWEDISH scientists are hoping to prevent paedophiles from acting on their sexual urges with a drug normally used to treat a cancer.

It is hoped that the £1,000-a-year, prostatecancer medicine Degarelix, which stops testosterone from being produced - will reduce sex drive and curb urges. The ground-breaking trial, at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institutet, involves 60 voluntary patients, who have sought help for paedophile fantasies, but have not acted on them. “The goal is to establish a preventivetreatment programme for men with paedophiliac disorder that is both effective and tolerable, so that we can prevent child sexualabuse from happening in the first place,” said psychiatrist Dr Christoffer Rahm, the lead researcher. Clinical studies on paedophiles are also rare, because of ethical issues and difficulties gathering data. Conducting research in which patients risk harming a thirdparty requires special co-operation with legal and child welfare experts, said Dr Rahm. In the clinical trial, half of the 60 subjects

receive an injection of Degarelix and the other half get a dummy” drug, or placebo. Subjects who receive Degarelix will have nondetectable levels of testosterone after three days - an effect that lasts about three months. The medicine affects the balance of the testosterone distribution temporarily, according to Dr Rahm. As testosterone is crucial to the regulation of at least three risk-factors for repeated child sexualabuse, lowering the levels of this hormone is hoped to reduce the risk of carrying out these acts “Testosterone is involved in several of the most important riskfactors for committing child sex-abuse, including high sexual-arousal, diminished self-control and low empathy,” said the doctor. He added that, with up to one in 10 girls and one in 20 boys being abused, there is an urgent need to find better ways of tackling paedophilia. “Child sexual-abuse is one of the most pervasive problems today. This issue is hard to deal with, but it is a must because it affects all of us,” he stressed. Degarelix works on the brain to stop testosterone from being produced. However, it is thought that it also feeds many of the traits of paedophilia. It is normally used to treat prostate cancer, which is

fuelled by the hormone. Some British prisons already give antitestosterone drugs to paedophiles in a bid to prevent them from reoffending. But these can take months to have an effect, and they may actually cause testosterone to rise initially. But Degarelix causes no such dangerous spike in hormone levels, and it works within days. “Child sexual-abuse causes a lot of suffering for the victims and their relatives, and also costs society enormous sums of money,” said Dr Rahm. “Most of the attention has been on how to deal with perpetrators, once they are detected by the police or the authorities. But by this stage, children have already been harmed. “With this project, I want to explore methods of preventing child sexual-abuse from happening in the first place.” The researchers are also working on a battery of tests, including blood, genetic and psychological tests and brain scans, which, they hope, could be used to spot those in danger of offending. Andrew Neilson, from the Howard League for Penal Reform, said: “We should be wary of pharmaceutical interventions when it comes to sexual offending, not least because the reasons behind such offending are often complex and not simply

about an individual’s sex drive. “Changing attitudes and behaviour will still require intensive and lengthy work, which may well continue long after a prison sentence has ended. “Nonetheless, we do welcome this clinical trial, as it should provide some useful evidence as to the desired effect of these treatments.” Professor Donald Grubin, a University of Newcastle forensic psychiatrist, said: “Typically, we come in after an offence has been committed, and we try to pick up the pieces. It would be great if we could do something before that.” A spokesman from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children said: “The urges that paedophiles have are neither normal nor acceptable, and anyone who abuses a child should be in jail. “Ensuring paedophiles get treatment to prevent them re-offending is an integral part of child-protection, and we weaken our defence against abuse if it is left out. “However, while the drugs can reduce sexual drive, they do not impact on thoughts and desires. Therefore, drugtreatment should be used in conjunction with other therapies only.” He added: “It would be dangerous to suggest they’re a silver bullet, offering a solution to child-abuse.”

Hitler sculpture sold for £11.9m A SCULPTURE of Hitler kneeling down, by Maurizio Cattelan, sold for £11.9m - a record-breaking sum for the Italian artiste - and kick-started a week of New York auctions, featuring modern, post-war and contemporary art at Christie’s and Sotheby’s. Cattelan’s controversial sculpture Him appears as a small child kneeling in prayer when approached from

the rear. But from the front, the unmistakable likeness of Hitler comes into view. Christie’s describes the work as: “quite simply one of the most shocking and disquieting works of art to have emerged in the postwar era”. Cattelan added: “Hitler is everywhere, haunting the spectre of history; and yet he is unmentionable, irreproducible,

wrapped in a blanket of silence. “I’m not trying to offend anyone. I don’t want to raise a new conflict or create some publicity; I would just like that image to become a territory for negotiation, or a test for our psychoses.” The 2001 piece, made with human hair, wax and polyester resin, was included in the artist’s retrospective at the

Guggenheim in 2011. The previous auction record for a work by Cattelan was £5.5m. A ball suspended in a water tank, called One Ball Total Equilibrium Tank, by Jeff Koons, sold for £10.6 million following its £8.3m estimate. Both works came up for auction for the first time, and they featured among the 39 works in Christie’s Bound to Fail themed sale.

Should Britain stay in OUT By LEAVE.EU

IN 1975, the British public voted “Yes” to a free trade deal with Europe. What they didn’t vote for was a “United States of Europe” - one that would go on to crush our democracy.

And also, in the process, create a class of politicians clearly in it for themselves. We now pay a staggering membership fee of £15bn each year to the EU. In return, we run a massive trade deficit with Germany, France and nearly every other European country. If three million UK jobs depend on our membership of the EU, then even more jobs in Europe depend on our economy. We will always be a part of Europe. But the EU is run for big business, big banks and big politics not for ordinary people. We are confident that a public “in the know”, will say “No” to the EU, and vote to “Leave” in the referendum on EU membership. Brexit leaders are thrilled that President Barack Obama came out against them, because they are seeing a bounce in the polls. Arron Banks, the British entrepreneur leading a grass-roots effort to leave the European Union, said he hopes the President continues urging the United Kingdom to remain a member state. During a trip to Washington, Banks, Chairman of Leave.EU, met with government officials and think-tanks to gain support for “Brexit”, the movement to leave the European Union when the UK votes on the EU referendum on 23rd June. Banks said issues of immigration and economics should make Americans invest in

LOVE EUROPE LEAVE THE EU

whether its oldest ally leaves the EU. “I think it’s hugely important, geopolitically, because the European Union is developing into a kind of United States of Europe, and that’s something the British are, naturally, pretty anti,” Banks told the Washington Free Beacon - an online conservative newspaper. “And it’s really come down to the point where most of our laws (65%) are now being made in Brussels! Our ultimate court is in France, and we’ve got open borders to 500 million people. “So, clearly, immigration is a massive issue, not dissimilar to a lot of the stuff they are discussing with Trump, in the sense of [how] some of these issues resonate.” Banks said the American equivalent of being in the European Union would make Congress in Toronto and the Supreme Court in Havana, while having a completely-open border to Mexico. “People are pretty cross,” he added. Banks said a core issue is being able to return sovereignty back to the British parliament, “so you can sack your politicians when you don’t like them”. He added: “The Presi-

dent of the European Union has never been elected. So there’s a massive, democratic deficit. Can you imagine in America that you just have an appointed President? It wouldn’t be popular, would it?” Banks sees “huge parallels” in the movement to leave the European Union and the antiestablishment fervour during the current, presidential, primary cycle. “It’s the sentiment in a lot of European countries, where we’ve got these kind of Eurosceptic movements, where the establishment is trying to contain it because they love Brussels,” he said. “Big companies love it, politicians love it, because what’s not to love? You finish your job as prime minister of Luxembourg and you become president of the European Union.” Banks criticised Obama for his recent trip to London, where he threatened that leaving the European Union would cause the UK to “be in the back of the queue,” in terms of trade. The phrase led many to speculate that the President was given talking points by Prime Minister David Cameron.

“He basically said that if you leave the European Union, you’ll go to the back of the trade queue,” said Banks. “Number one, we don’t particularly like being threatened on our home doorstep. “Number two, everyone was slightly confused why he used the word `’queue’ and not ‘line’. It led to a lot of discussion about whether he had just been given it to read. So I think he was briefed, obviously, by the British government, and it was a favour.” Banks added: “But since his appearance,

polls have actually gone in the other direction. We need to hear more from him, really. Send him back for another go - we’d be delighted to see him again.” Banks is optimistic about the referendum vote, despite close polling, because core supporters of Brexit tend to be more energised. A new poll, following Obama’s visit, saw Brexit gaining support over the Remain campaign: 51% to 49%. The Free Beacon asked Banks what Americans can do if they are sympathetic to his cause. “Keep sending Obama over,” he said. Meanwhile, Matthew Elliott, Business for Britain Chief Executive, is also on a mission to get Great Britain out of the EU. He says: “Regardless of your stance on Britain’s EU membership, we can be united on one front - that clarity is paramount.” TheKnow, and organisations in line with our thinking, want Britain to leave the EU. That is the cornerstone of our campaign. What we are not looking to do is leave Europe. Undoubtedly, using “EU” and “Europe” in-

terchangeably can be highly confusing for those still forming their opinion on the matter, a belief strongly held by Elliott. “The distinction between “Europe” and “the EU” should not be under-estimated,” he says. “While this conflation is, perhaps, innocuous to some, it has the potential to skew voters’ understanding seriously in the debate, as they weigh up what Britain’s future relationship with the EU should look like.” It may sound obvious, but whether we stay in the EU or not, we cannot physically leave Europe, no more can Texas can leave North America. It could, however, leave the United States. But that’s another story. Our campaign is not looking to enforce isolationism. We are not looking to cut ourselves off from Europe and the rest of the world - far from it. What we do want is for decisions for Britain to be made in Britain, and for the benefit of its citizens. It’s quite simple really: we want to withdraw from the European Union, not the European Continent.

in the European Union? Keep IN, keep equality By James McGrory

(Chief campaign spokesman, Britain Stronger In Europe)

ON 23rd June, the British public face the biggest decision in a generation. Do we retain our membership of the EU, or do we turn our backs and take a leap into the dark?

For me, it’s an obvious choice. I passionately believe that Britain is stronger, safer and better off inside the EU. But don’t just take my word for it, let’s examine the facts. As members of the European Union, we benefit from trade, jobs, investment, security, rights for women, workers and consumers, cheaper holidays and much more. Despite all of these benefits, the Leave Campaign is unable to articulate what Britain would look like outside the EU. It has been asked countless times, but still can’t manage a coherent response. And that throws everyone’s future into uncertainty, in particular, Brits who are living in other EU countries. The Leave campaign has said it will take us out of the single market and negotiate new deals, but it cannot back this up with any concrete evidence. What it won’t say is, that in reality, the EU won’t give it a better deal than it would have for itself. Why would it? Any new relationship or arrangement between Britain and the EU following a Leave vote would need to be ratified by all 27 remaining EU countries. It is reasonable to assume that the EU would have the upper hand in negotiations, given Britain’s economic reliance on our trade

with the EU. Furthermore, the diplomatic climate after a leaving the EU might not be conducive to an amicable “new deal”. It is, therefore, very possible that a deal for privileged access to housing and health care for Brits would be difficult to negotiate. This leap into the dark spells uncertainty for Brits living abroad in the EU. As citizens of an EU member state, Britons living elsewhere in the EU are entitled to equal treatment, which means they enjoy the same rights and access to public services as any citizen of the country they are living in. This includes access to health care, education, housing and community services. Thanks to EU regulation, UK citizens living in the EU permanently cannot be discriminated against, based on their nationality in employment. We do not need a permit or visa to work in any EU country, or any other instance across the EU. Equally, UK citizens enjoy free access to emergency health care in all EU member states because of the

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The key to this point is that it’s not the UK, but the other EU countries which cover the health care for Brits who live abroad permanently. They are not covered by the NHS and, therefore, are not paid for by the British taxpayer. As the NHS website states: “If you are moving abroad on a permanent basis, you will no longer be entitled to medical treatment under normal NHS rules.” This is because the NHS is a residencebased healthcare system. The only medical treatment of Brits abroad footed by the NHS is that of people on holiday, or on shortterm stays in another EU country. So, the arrangement that Brits living abroad currently enjoy may well stop in the event of leaving. Any attempt to maintain these arrangements after leaving the EU is likely to require reciprocal action concerning EU citizens in Britain, and/ or a UK contribution to the EU budget. Leaving wouldn’t just impact ex-pats either. If we decided to leave

the EU, students who have planned to study abroad during their degree could face the high tuition fees currently paid by non-EU students at Europe’s universities. They could, as a result, lose the opportunity for vital funding for their year abroad through the EU’s Erasmus programme, which allows them to study and train abroad, gaining life-changing experiences in the process. We also have Europe to thank for lower flight prices, and leaving could hike up mobilephone roaming charges for Brits abroad. By next summer, all roaming charges within the EU will be scrapped completely - a considerable saving for families during their visits to the EU, either on holiday or visiting loved ones living on the continent. Plus, thanks to our EU membership, it’s also cheaper to use your credit card, and beaches are cleaner. These are all tangible benefits of our membership which shouldn’t be overlooked, or taken for granted. Back in the UK,

families are better off as part of Europe. That was made clear through analysis released by The Treasury in April. It showed that leaving would place a heavy financial burden on all of us. According to Treasury figures, the British economy would be hit to the tune of £4,300 per household, and our GDP will have shrunk by more than 6%. Then there are the benefits of our EU membership on women’s rights. The EU is a champion of equality and, as a result, there is guaranteed maternity leave, protection against dismissal for becoming pregnant, and the right to earn as much as a man for doing the same job. Leaving would be a backwards step in the fight for progress. It’s key, also, to remember that young people have a huge stake in this referendum. After all, they have the most to lose and will have to live with the consequences the longest if Britain walks away from Europe. So before voting, it’s worth considering how much brighter the fu-

IN tures of our children and grandchildren will be if they have the same opportunities that we’ve enjoyed inside the EU. The fundamental argument in this debate is that a vote to stay In is a vote for certainty. We’ll be stronger, safer and better off in Europe because we’ll get to keep access to the Single Market of 500 million people, with a say over the rules of doing business across Europe. That means more jobs, lower prices, and more financial security for British families. A Leave vote is a vote for risk. Vote Leave members say they’ll walk away from the single market and negotiate a new deal, but they can’t explain what it would be, and how long it will take. The truth is that if we left, the EU would not give us a better deal than they have for themselves. That means jobs aren’t safe, prices will rise, mortgages will be at risk, and funding for your local school or hospital will fall.

Louis Theroux takes a look at the issues that some of the estimated one million people in the UK living with the long-term effects of a brain injury have to deal with. Louis spends time with staff and service users at the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust, one of the UK’s largest providers of neuro-behavioural rehabilitation, in an effort to understand how individuals and their families come to terms with this life-changing condition. Often called a ‘hidden disability’ because those affected can show little physical signs of change, individuals with acquired brain injury face enormous cognitive, behavioural and personality challenges. Those affected are left to reconstruct who they are - from relearning the basics of walking, talking and eating to redeveloping complex personality and behavioural traits, often in the shadow of who they once were. Family members are often caught between grieving for the loved one they have lost and learning to love the person they are now.

The Great British Sewing Bee BBC2, 21:00

The Great British Sewing Bee returns for an eightpart series presented by Claudia Winkleman. Under the scrutiny of Savile Row’s Patrick Grant and Central St Martin’s Esme Young, ten fresh-faced home sewers face three challenges designed to test their skill and understanding of basic garment construction. First, the sewers follow a pattern for a woman’s top made up of four pieces. However, it is deceptively difficult, demanding accurate pattern matching skills, a steady hand for cutting and precision sewing. Next, the judges want their personal style and imagination to come to the fore by transforming a maternity dress in just 90 minutes. Finally, they take on the Made to Measure challenge, fitting a skirt to a real model. Who can keep their cool to produce a flattering waistline and perfectly level hem and who will falter and be the first to leave the sewing room?

Weight For Love BBC1, 20.00

Weight For Love follows couples who are locked in a cycle of over-eating that threatens not only their health, but their relationship. They are one another’s own worst enemy - each encouraging the other to over eat - and clinical psychologist Professor Tanya Byron believes it is only by separating and having therapy that they can address their underlying individual issues, change for good, and ultimately be happier again with one another. In episode 1 we meet Becky and her partner Phil who are locked in a cycle of over-consumption that now threatens their relationship. Knocking back three litres of fizzy drinks a day, Phil’s weight has yoyoed from 15 to 30 stone, twice, whilst Becky caves in to any takeaway temptation. Clinical psychologist, professor Tanya Byron and her team - fitness expert Rick Shakes-Braithwaite and Paul Dolan, professor of behavioural science at LSE - separate them for ten weeks in a bid to overhaul their habits. Phil discovers he has life-threatening blood pressure and the realisation hits him that without change he won’t live to see his children grow up. While Rick guides Phil back to exercise to improve the health of his heart, Becky finds that the main thing getting in the way of sustaining her weight loss is a chronic lack of confidence. But half way through the programme, inexplicably Phil begins to resist the help. Tanya calls in behavioural scientist Professor Paul Dolan for radical mind-training.

Jimmy Hill : A Man For All Seasons BBC1, 22.45 A moving tribute to the legend that was Jimmy Hill, who sadly passed away in December. For generations of fans, including Gary Lineker, Mark Lawrenson , Alan Hansen and Gabby Logan, Jimmy was an authoritative voice as both a television presenter and analyst. Contributors including Greg Dyke, Lord Hall, Sir Alex Ferguson, Peter Alliss and Terry Venables debate Jimmy’s legacy, but all agree that he is probably best remembered for leading the campaign to abolish the maximum wage - revolutionising the careers and prospects of professional footballers in the early 1960s. With an intimate portrayal of his life to the end, wife Bryony and son Jamie sum up the character behind one of the great innovators, a man ahead of his time with a personality that dominated his era, who gave so much to so many in all walks of life.

Paxman In Brussels: Who Really Rules Us?

13th May - 19th May 2016

T hursday

BBC1, 20.00

Jeremy Paxman takes an impartial look at the fundamentals of what actually goes on between the UK and the EU, in this one-hour documentary. He travels to Brussels and walks the corridors of power in the EU’s headquarters, to discover how decisions that affect half a billion people - including all of us - are made. Paxman meets both officials and politicians from elsewhere in the EU to discover what makes Brussels tick. In interviews and lively encounters he hears the full spectrum of opinion on whether the UK should remain within the union or leave. Back in Britain, he explores how our relationship with the European Union and its predecessors has shaped Westminster politics for decades. He reveals unexpected stories and talks to key figures of many political stripes and differing convictions on the EU. Paxman explains the process by which laws made in the EU pass onto our statute books. And he examines why the concept of ‘sovereignty’ has long played a part in our national debate about Brussels. The programme reveals just how the decisions made in Brussels are now part of all our lives, and asks how our relationship with Europe might change - whatever the referendum outcome.

Living With Quads ITV1, 21.00

Georgie Carles, aged 10, said: “It’s different because no one I’ve ever met in my life has been an identical quad – it feels a bit strange, but I’ve learnt to live with it, which is pretty awesome”. Stay at home Dad, Justin Clark, said: “I wouldn’t swap it for Euromillions”. Living with Quads is a one off 60-minute programme featuring four families dealing with the rare challenges of bringing up quadruplets. Viewers will get a glimpse into the lives of each family who are at a very different stage of raising their children. Produced by Ricochet, the programme gives a unique, joyous and intimate insight into family life with quads. Viewers will meet the Martin’s: a couple who conceived quads naturally from four different fertilised eggs. Their two girls and two boys are approaching their first birthday and have turned the couple’s lives upside down with 20 nappy changes, 24 feeds and 12 bed times every day. The Clarks have four daughters who have now reached the ‘terrible two’s’. Feeds and bottles are a thing of the past as they move onto potty training. The Clarks aren’t just coping with turbo charged toddlers, their girls also have a number of food intolerances and repetitive chest infections that require medical attention. The Bates have four six year olds attending an independent school. To make this work financially, both parents have returned to full time work and have called in the help of grandma, who the quads live with during the school week. This difficult and emotive decision is questioned by both parents as they try to manage their work / life balance. The Carles are the proud parents of the UK’s only naturally conceived identical quads – which has odds of one in 64 million. The four girls are turning 10 and are being encouraged to find their own identities. Now in middle school, the girls are in different classes and finding their feet on their own for the first time.

How to Get a Council House Channel 4, 23:00

The London Borough of Hounslow is facing a housing crisis. Due to a dwindling stock of social housing, and rising demand from applicants struggling to find affordable private sector properties, the council is being forced to house families in temporary accommodation. As this predominantly consists of bed and breakfast rooms and private sector lets, the council is at the mercy of the private housing market, and has run up housing debts of £3.5 million. This episode takes an unflinching look at Hounslow Council’s attempts to curb its spiralling temporary accommodation bill, and meets the families who are stuck in inadequate housing or turned away without help. Hotel cleaner Danielle and her e i g h t - y e a r- o l d son have been evicted from their privately rented flat for failing to pay the rent.

Eurovision Song Contest

Eur gotta love it! Preview by Robin Elliott

IT’S that time of year again! Yes, tomorrow night (Saturday), millions of people will be drinking themselves into oblivion in front of the telly, commenting on over three hours of mostly-awful songs from countries around Europe and beyond!

Love it or hate it, we all have our views, and we do want to know who will win the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. For a start, we can rule out the United Kingdom. Flying the flag are Joe & Jake - rejects from BBC1’s The Voice - who have actually got a very catchy song - You Are Not Alone. The boys’ tune sounds much like The Script’s No Good In Goodbye and should pick up a lot of votes. But we all know, and even with the new voting structure, there will still be too much political voting going on for the UK to be in with a chance. I must also mention the Irish entry, Nicky Byrne’s Sunlight, but, just like the UK, Ireland haven’t a hope this year - and will never get back to those winning days, featuring acts like Johnny Logan, Linda Martin and Dana! And, by the way, can you also believe that it’s 22 years since Riverdance first appeared on TV during the Eurovision interval? This year we will be watching Justin Timberlake as the halftime act, performing his new single, Can’t Stop The Feeling. Justin makes Eurovision history because this is the first time a non-contestant “Global Superstar”, will enter the Eurovision stage. So, enough of the reminiscing and nostalgia, let’s look ahead to this year’s final in Stockholm, and here are the favourites. Sergey Lazarev is

representing Russia with You Are The Only One. The Russians have pulled out all the stops with a massive stage that looks like something out of a scifi movie. And during Sergey’s three minutes on stage, he climbs all over the set and, at one point, seems to get struck by lightning …I hope he’s well insured because he fell off the stage in rehearsals this week! The Russians, winners in 2008, came pretty close to victory last year, finishing second. And this might just be their year again. France are also one of the favourites and have had quite a good run at Eurovision, winning five times, although not in the last 39 years. At least the UK managed a win back in 1997 with Love Shine A Light by Katrina & The Waves! Anyway, this year France are represented by Amir and his J’ai Cherché, which, translated into English, is I Searched or I Searched For (hopefully I got the translation correct for any French teachers out there). If this song doesn’t win I’m sure it will become a big summer hit across Europe as it sounds very like an Avicci track. I love the Australian entry, but it’s probably too good for Eurovision! The entry from Down Under is from Aussie X Factor winner Dami Im, a very talented young lady. I have featured her Sound Of Silence on Oasis Fm a lot over the past few weeks, and have also played tracks from her new Classic Carpenters’ album. Earlier this week, Graham Norton stated that Australia should be kicked out of the Eurovision as they were not part of Europe and thousands of miles away. Graham, you are talking nonsense! Australia were invited to join the contest last year for the

60th Anniversary of Eurovision and made it to the top five. Now, Sound of Silence will get plenty of points, but more devoted, diehard Eurovision fans might penalise them for not actually being in Europe. Another favourite are Sweden, who have won two of the last four finals. They really should have given other countries a chance this year. But No, they have sent another superb song to the final called If I Were Sorry.

This is another great track for radio, sung by a 17-yearold called Frans. The youngster is no stranger to a bit of fame. As a seven-year-old, he had a massive hit in his native Sweden with the song Zlatan, about their top football striker Ibrahimovic. If Sweden win again, it will be the first time a country has won successive Grand Finals since Ireland in 1994, and they actually went on to win a third time

the following year. Malta’s entry is from an attractive young lady called Ira Losco, who could probably get work as a Kate Middleton lookalike rather than join the dole queue after Eurovision. The small Mediterranean island has definitely produced an excellent song this year with Walk On Water,

which sounds as though it could have been a hit for someone like Jess Glynne. I have never been to Malta, so I’d quite like them to win t so that I can report on the Eurovision from Valletta next year! I must also mention the Bulgarian entry from Poli Genova, another young lady who’s easy on the eye and represented her country in the Eurovision in 2011. Bulgaria have qualified for the Grand Final just once since 2007, but this year’s song, If Love Was A Crime, looks set to change all that. The Ukraine entry, also pretty popular, is among the favourites. Written and performed by Jamala, the song 1944 is all about history and politics - and her great grandmother! As part of the Big Five, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, plus last year’s winner Sweden, are all guaranteed a place in this year’s final. Germany’s Ghost is sung by Jamie-Lee, a Hanover schoolgirl who won The Voice of Germany last December. Italy are represented by Francesca Michielin and her song, No Degree Of Separation, is already a bit hit in her home country. Spain are represented by Barei, a Madrid singer-songwriter who has released two albums already and has spent 15 years in the music business. Her Eurovision song Say Yay has already been No.1 on I-Tunes Spain. Of the rest, Greece have gone for a strange, traditional, music act called Argo, while Austria must have found their singer Zoe at a local karaoke venue. That said, it has been a mover with the bookmakers this week, as has the Netherlands entry. Bosnia & Herzegovina have sent two men, two women, and a cello to Stockholm, and Belgium are being represented by 19-year-old Laura Tesoro with an S Club 7-sounding What’s The Pressure track.

Braemar brims with class

By Vanessa Vee IN my mind, it’s always good to plan ahead for your next holiday. It gives us something to look forward to when we get caught up in the general dayto-day scenarios.

This winter, Fred. Olsen have some great itineraries and offers, departing or disembarking right here in Tenerife. Fred.Olsen cruise lines offer a unique experience, which is second to none, and they have collected an array of awards for their excellence. Firstly, let me make this clear: Fred.Olsen Cruise lines are a totally different product from Fred.Olsen Ferries. Same owners, but, as described, one is a ferry, the other a cruise liner. A fleet of four ships

offer worldwide itineraries with various departure points, though mainly UK, and Fred. Olsen’ s “Braemar” is coming to Tenerife this November. Braemar’s timeless style and elegance will capture your senses. Large windows bathe the ship’s interiors in natural light and provide spectacular views; while polished wooden fixtures, shining brass fittings, decadent fabrics and carefully-designed decor assume the feel of a traditional country house hotel. Braemar, capable of accommodating up to 929 guests comfortably, has a unique, intimate

feel, with friendly staff offering a fantastic level of personal service. They cater to your every want and need, will learn your name and your favourite tipple, how you prefer your steak and prepare your breakfast perfectly every morning. On board Braemar, you’ll find a superb selection of restaurants, bars and lounges, offering sumptuous cuisine, a wide range of beers, wines and spirits - and fantastic entertainment! Enjoy a delicious, buffet-style lunch at the Palms Café, and a expertly-prepared, fivecourse, a la carte dinner at the Thistle and

Grampian Restaurants; refresh at the Marquee poolside bar in the sunshine, or, perhaps, enjoy a cosy drink in the familiar surroundings of the Morning Light Pub. Traditional afternoon tea in the Observatory Lounge is a not-tobe-missed experience, and be sure to take in a show in the Neptune Lounge. One of the focal points on Braemar is a beautifully-painted, five-deck-high Atrium, which leads to the fullyequipped Fitness Centre, Palms Café, Coral Club and the Thistle Restaurant. And the cascading decks at the stern enhance the ship’s elegant profile, offering stunning vistas, no matter which outside deck you’re on. The main cruise I would like to tell you about departs on 24th November this year. And please see local press for the other options, including a great five-day “taster” cruise for those who would like to try their hand at cruising, or even for those who just need a mini-break.

Enjoy soothing, winter warmth on the beautiful beaches of the Cape Verdes and Canary Islands on this fantastic cruise. Your holiday begins and ends in our beautiful city of Santa Cruz, so you have plenty of time to play tourist and explore the stunning volcanic landscapes of El Teide National Park; climb the 12,000ft snowcapped peak of Spain’s highest mountain; visit the mysterious, poisonous gardens at the Pyramids of Guimar, or simply relax on the sunsoaked beaches. In the Cape Verdes, relax among the unspoilt, paradise landscapes of Praia - a perfect place to forget about the cold weather back home. Explore the volcanic landscapes; shake your hips to the sounds of the traditional Funana beats, or top-up your tan on the seeminglyendless golden beaches. In Las Palmas, make the most of Gran Canaria’s superb climate with a trip to the must-visit Palmitos Park - home to beautiful, exotic birds and wonderful dolphins,

or head to the stunning sand-dunes at nearby Maspalomas to relax in the sunshine. The Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team have got an amazing price, offering you a chance to receive a 50% discount off this specific 14 day cruise. Simply reserve virtually any Fred. NEW SAFETY-FIRST PLAN

By Emma at Motorworld

THE Spanish Government is introducing a seven-point action plan across the country which, it is hoped, will reduce the number of traffic casualties significantly.

To this end, 7.2 million euros has been set aside to implement the plan, which was announced at the Guardia Civil Traffic School’s recent 20th anniversary celebrations. Jorge Fernandez Diaz, Spain’s Interior Minister, has praised the work of the Guardia Civil Traffic Police who, he said, provide dedication to Government roadsafety policies through

the DGT. Having taken into account road fatalities and fatal incidents so far this year, he said that this new plan was fundamental. There will be three specific areas targeted: conventional roads, motorcycles and vans. Last year, the vast number of people killed in head-on collisions were on conventional roads. Motorbike deaths have also increased, and this measure is aimed at achieving better behaviour from bikers, and cyclists, as well as improving the co-existence of other road-users. With regard to vans, there has also been a substantial increase in fatal incidents, and this failing also needs to be addressed. The seven-point plan is as follows: 1. Installation of Rumble Strips Many motorways and some conventional roads already have these strips, and a further 3,000km of roads will have them installed

on both the hard shoulders and central-lane markings. They should help the avoidance of vehicles colliding, often head-on, with those travelling in the opposite direction. There are many black-spots in Spain and, also in the Canaries. 2. Overtaking limitations Overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres carried out on an open road, and certainly in Tenerife! This will be restricted in more areas, by widening the solid white lines (where possible) and renewing these lines, again where possible. This is estimated to reduce poor overtaking. In 2015 throughout Spain, 217 people died in head-on collisions, so anything that can be done to decrease this horrific total is imperative. 3. Dangerous intersections Junctions, especially many here in Tenerife, are some of the most

dangerous of areas on a road network. They are, of course, necessary as vehicles cross and interact with other vehicles already moving, which is always a risk. And perhaps more so in tourist areas or resorts, where strangers are unfamiliar with road lay-outs. Part of the plan is to install warning signs on the approach to key junctions, especially where visibility is impaired by other signs, built-up junctions or those with bushes or trees. This project is also expected to save some 20 lives a year.

4. Pedestrian-crossing signals Illuminated warning signs will be installed on these crossings, making drivers easily aware of them. They will be the standard type, with orange warning lights. 5. Monitoring and controlling speeding at night The idea behind this is to continue with the current campaigns on a monthly basis, and to increase this at night and on routes frequented by vans. Drivers will be stopped and their occupants identified, while police will also test drivers for

alcohol and/or drug use, and ensure correct documentation, including current ITV and insurance. 6. Monitoring motorway speed, and safe distances between vehicles In addition to excess speeding, maintaining a safe distance will be focused on, not only by roadside patrols but helicopters will also be employed, as will information notices warning of safe distances. These signs are numerous in the UK. The number of people killed last year through another driver being too close was 54 - increased from the previous year. 7. Motorcycles Motorcycles will be given more attention by both police, at roadside checks and at ITV stations, to ensure the insurance and other documents are in order. Police will, of course, be monitoring the speed of bikes and especially those involved in dangerous manoeuvres.

She had a hunger to succeed, though not in that direction. No, Cassandra had a special taste … for making popcorn! And what a hunger because the 32-yearold entrepreneur this week won a prestigious business award for her “posh popcorn” brand, called Propercorn. Miss Stavrou, having quit her job at top London agency BBH in 2009, moved back in with her art-teacher mother Dania in Barnet, North London, and spent two years cooking up recipes for her special brand, as well as working parttime in pubs to save up the £10,000 she needed. She was rewarded by receiving the New Generation Award at the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman event, which celebrates female entrepreneurs in Britain. The snappy snacks, which sell at £1.59 for 90g, look slick and stylish, but Cassandra said: “I’m so incredibly grateful to my longsuffering mum. She has always been sup-

She was all-hands-ondeck, very much there getting stuck in.” As well as getting stuck into some hard work, Cassandra, not fully satisfied with sweet or salty popcorn, experimented with many recipes. And Propercorn now offers six eclectic flavours, including Fiery Worcester Sauce & Sundried Tomato, plus Sweet Coconut & Vanilla. She was also unhappy with existing manufacturing methods, so she came up with the idea of “tumbling” the corn - a technique she tried out initially inside a cement mixer. As the barrel went

round, she misted it with oil using a water gun and threw in handfuls of seasoning. Needless to say, production methods in her Leicester factory are now “a great deal more sophisticated”. After she teamed up with Ryan Kohn, Propercorn was launched officially in 2011. And their snacks soon moved from her mum’s kitchen to being sold at Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Selfridges. By the end of last year, the brand had made annual sales of £9 million, selling three million bags of popcorn per month. Cassandra believes their success has been fuelled by hungry snackers wanting something healthier than crisps. “I wanted to create something that was healthy and tasty, which that would appeal to the masses,” she added.

Having a baby? Don’t let those years drift by

Your hair… your choice

By Carl Pattison WHILE listening to yet another hair horrorstory, regarding a highlighting session in another salon, it brought back to me the phrase “not again”. As clients, you put your trust in stylists who are supposed to be qualified and fullytrained. But, did you know that here, and in most parts of the world, the hairdressing industry is NOT controlled by any government, or insurance company? Anyone can be a stylist, and own a salon, with no control whatsoever. Insurance com-

panies don’t ask, when you take out cover with them, if you are qualified, and NOT having insurance isn’t illegal. In Tenerife, making a claim against a salon is virtually impossible. It takes three other clients to make a complaint before the trading standards will make a move. This leaves you with little, or no, way of making a formal complaint. So why am I harping on about this subject? Most salons here take

pride in what they send out of the door on clients’ heads, but some seem to carry on, regardless. I often think of how they must feel to have the power in their hands to create a masterpiece, or destroy someone’s hair - and life - in just a few hours. It’s mostly colouring I’m talking about. Cuts can be be put right in a few minutes, or weeks, depending on the damage. But hair-colouring is always best left to the professionals. Think about this when you’re sitting in the salon chair next time. “Exactly who is behind that tint-brush, wielding chemicals?” Please ask your stylist about their qualifications. I’ve never once been asked in 35 years in this industry. Sad, I know.

YOUVE BEEN FRAMED By Carl Pattison THERE’S never a time to make a seasonal purchase of sunglasses in Tenerife because it’s summer all year round, and we all use them, constantly. Yet, this time of year sees the summer collection of sunglasses appearing in all our regular stores. Choosing ones to suit your face shape can be a small nightmare for some, and taking a friend along isn’t always the answer. Before you go searching, find out the shape of your face because this will make things so much easier. Start by choosing a colour you like, and one that fits in with the colour scheme of your wardrobe. This will make ensure they tie in with your clothes, accessories and

jewellery. Black’s great, if you want your glasses to match most colours in your wardrobe, but it can look a little heavy on paler skins. Browns are good, if you know they are going to complement your clothing, but it all depends on the shade. Metallics are, too, as they blend into your image, rather than make a statement. Golds, silvers and bronzes are hot colours to have, and, depending on the shape, rarely date - or go out of fashion. Larger, bolder glasses are more popular at the moment, but watch

that they don’t drown your face if you’re more petite. Instead, opt for morediamond-shaped, wider glasses to complement your features. Don’t be bullied into a sale by the assistant. Sunglasses are a major purchase, and, of course, they will tell you that you look gorgeous in them. Take your time, and don’t opt for the first pair you see. Take them outside into the natural light, and always make sure they are genuine because fakes or cheaper varieties can damage your precious eyesight. Your eyes are the first thing people look at when they meet you, so make sure they are framed in something which will speak volumes about you.

By Val Sainsbury ONLY last week did pop star Janet Jackson announce she was pregnant at the grand age of 49. And she is reported to be in the second trimester of pregnancy, having worked with a fertility specialist in a bid to have a child. Her news must have raised eyebrows because she is nearly 50 - and at a time of life when most women are preparing to become grandmothers! But how old is too old? According to a new survey, carried out by the Private Pregnancy UK Show, when it comes to having babies, British women believe the cutoff point should be 44. Focusing on careers and not finding the right partner, as well as advancements in medicine and science, play crucial roles in the surge in older women having babies. The five most cited reasons as to why women believe 44 should be the cut-off age are: 1. It’s unfair on the child to have old parents 2. Increased likelihood of health complications like Down’s Syndrome for the child 3. Women aged 50-plus should not be allowed fertility assistance via vitro fertilisation (IVF) 4. Parents won’t live long enough to see the child grow up 5. It’s “unnatural” to have babies after that age The research also found that almost three-quarters of women believe there is insufficient fertility education available

about not “leaving it too late” to start a family. Likewise, there is a lack of options available to help preserve a woman’s fertility and/or assist with conception. And 75% of women questioned believe the responsibility to educate women about their biological clock lies with leading health officials. The reality, according to one expert, is that some women feel they “believe they can go on forever”,which means they don’t fear leaving things too late. “The ideal age for women to become pregnant is in their twenties and early thirties,” said Dr Amin Gorgy, fertility consultant and IVF specialist at The Fertility & Gynaecology Academy. Meanwhile, a woman’s fertility potential declines rapidly after the age of 35 - and it drops even faster after the age of 40. “Indeed,” says Dr Gorgy, “successful egg-freezing through vitrification has made it possible for women to postpone conception to later in life. But as a society, we should be encouraging couples to have children at a younger age.

“In fact, I recommend that couples should aim to complete their families by the age of 35. “There isn’t enough education available to women, many of whom still believe they can go on forever.” Theoretically, through egg-donation and using eggs frozen at an earlier age, women can conceive at any age. While the receptivity of the womb for implanting embryos declines only after the age of 54, doctors usually enforce an upper age limit of 50. And IVF certainly doesn’t guarantee a baby, especially after the age of 35. “The chances of having a live birth with an IVF cycle declines dramatically with age,” said Dr Gorgy. “For example, there is a 20% success rate at the age of 40, which falls to just 1% above the age of 45.” Dr Alex Eskander, consultant gynaecologist at The Gynae Centre, added: “My feeling is that women in the UK enjoy much more the liberty, freedom and opportunity to further their careers against settling down to have children, the latter of which is now a thoroughly-outdated concept of the traditional family. “I find the two key points of pressure for these women to have children come from the ‘need’ of their parents to have grandchildren, and a growing understanding of their biological clock.” He added: “Let’s be clear - as a clinician, I am not scare-mongering, but it is a fact that ovarian function declines significantly from 30 years of age, and even more sharply after 35 years.”

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

Kyle’s a tourist attraction OUR Karaoke competition returned to the El Mirador strip in Los Cristianos at Dylans Bar, which is another new venue for us.

Judges were Jo Rham (Oasis Fm), Joe Price (Canarian Weekly), Sue (representing Dylans Bar), and superstar DJ/entertainer Dylan himself, who not only judged but also entertained the crowd during the half-time interval. This heat saw seven singers. Again, it was decided that each contestant would sing two songs, the top three going through to the singoff. Dylans Bar, being a well-established venue, meant that not only did residents take part but tourists as well, which led to the variety of songs being even wider than in most other heats. First up was Roxanne, who sang the Alanis Morissette’s 1995 classic Ironic. It was received warmly, and set the standard for the evening. Next on stage was Kyle, whose rendition of Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud was very

strong, proving a favourite with the audience. Janet was third up, choosing a Ray Charles number Georgia On My Mind, which covers a huge range. But she coped well with the demands of the song. Another favourite entrants’ song this year, Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond, was Steve’s choice, and he produced a solid rendition. Natalie chose the Etta James version of the 1960 hit I Just Want to Make Love to You and proved she had superb control and power in all the right places. Keith changed the tone

of the evening with the 1959 swing-song Mack the Knife, delivering the popular Bobby Darin hit extremely well. Next, and last in the running order for the first half of the show, was Christine, who sang Nina Simone’s My Baby Just Cares For Me. Her choice paid off, and both Christine and the audience seemed to enjoy it immensely. During the short break, we were entertained by our host, Dylan, singing the songs our karaoke singers wouldn’t sing! Part two then began, with singers going in re-

verse order. That meant Christine was back on stage first, singing the Peggy Lee favourite Fever. She was followed by Keith, with the Louis Armstrong classic Wonderful World. Janet performed Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love, while Steve came up with Angels by Robbie Williams, before Natalie sung Feeling Good, the second Nina Simone number of the night. To close the second half, we first had Kyle singing Amy Winehouse’s Valerie and Roxanne performing Colors of the Wind by Ashanti, from the Pocahontas film. The computerised scoring system whirred into action, and the final three were soon announced, in talentshow style. So, “in no particular order”, Janet, Kyle and Natalie progressed from the line-up and chose their sing-off numbers. Janet drew the short straw and had to go first. She chose The Righteous Brothers’ version of Unchanged Melody, which was appreciated by judges and audience alike. Kyle was next to go, opting to sing a very difficult song, and, for the second time, chose an

Ed Sheeran song, You Need Me, I Don’t Need You. This showed his versatility and, again, he had the audience on their feet in appreciation. Then, all eyes and ears fell on Natalie, who chose Shirley Bassey’s Big Spender. Just after midnight, the evening drew to a close and the winner was announced as Kyle, who had shown versatility and a wonderful voice. And he is first tourist this year to reach the finals. His personality makes him a crowd favourite, and he seemed genuinely delighted to get through. Like all other heats it was a fun night with great support for the entrants, creating a brilliant, all-round atmosphere. As always, huge congratulations go to all the performers, and those who came along to contribute to these magnificent entertainment nights. This year’s competition is proudly sponsored by Bombay Babu Authentic Indian Tandoori Restaurants, which has three perfect places to enjoy the best Indian food in Tenerife: Torviscas Playa, Callao Salvaje and their latest restaurant in La Tejita

commercial centre, between Los Abrigos to El Medano. Bombay Babu also offers a full take-away and free delivery service - call 922 705 092 or go on-line at bombaybabu.com As an additional bonus, the TLK heats are being filmed by My VideoI, with each entrant’s footage posted on Oasis Fm facebook page. Up For Grabs is a personalised video of your journey with Tenerife Loves Karaoke, and all you need to lend your support is go to www. youtube.com/myvideoi Click subscribe, then ‘like’ your favourite video. The video/ contestant with the most ‘likes’ on 1st June wins the personalised video. There’s still time to compete in the two remaining heats - open to everyone over the age of 13, every nationally and to anyone who has entered before. Call Oasis Fm on 902 232 102, register at the relevant venues, or at facebook oasisfm Tenerife. But do hurry because there are just two heats left, at the Albatross Bar, Costa del Silencio, on 22nd May, and the final heat at Leonardos, Las Americas, on the 27th.

Cats Welfare news

This is microchip month! WE have a special offer for May: a microchip for your cat or dog at only 20 euros, through us exclusively. So many cats go missing every year and Cats Welfare recommends your cat has a safety collar and tag with phone number on.

And also a microchip in case the collar is lost. Please have your pet micro-chipped to give it the best possible chance of a safe return. For this month only, all

cats and dogs can be micro-chipped at any of our three vets (Gran Sur, Los Cristianos or Las Chafiras) for just 20 euros. It’s easy, safe and shows you love your pet - and remember, it’s also the law for all dogs to have a microchip. You must contact us for a promotion code, prior to going to the vet. Ring or whatsapp Theresa on 680 475 500 (9am-6pm, 7 days a week) Don’t forget them At this time of year, when there are so many cute kittens around, please let’s not forget all the adults still needing homes. Tilly is a beautiful tabby, who was left be-

hind when her owners went back to the UK a year ago. Yes, that old story. She was left to fend for herself, finding food wherever she could. Someone phoned us to say she had “cancer” on her face. But It turns out that the other cats on the complex were attacking her. The vet initially felt she might have tumours, but No! The scabs have healed, her fur has grown back and the ugly duckling has turned into a beautiful swan. Tilly has a really loud purr and will make a wonderful companion. She’s not overly keen on other cats, but she would probably be okay with a dog and

would live happily as a house cat, or with access to outside. She’s about two years old, leukaemia-negative, and we paid for her spaying and her injections. And we will also pay for a microchip. She’s been through a lot, and we need to give her the chance of a

fresh start. Could that be with you? We always have cats looking for homes and, right now, kittens as well. You can view Tilly and all our current availability on our website at www.catswelfare -tenerife.com/ pets. All adults are vacci-

nated, neutered and micro-chipped. They also go on a two-week trial so you can be sure you have made the right decision before finally committing. Your donations Do you have anything to donate to help us raise funds? Items can be dropped into the shop at San Blas, on Golf del Sur (behind HiperDino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm (Saturdays 11am-4pm). If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items to offer us - such as furniture and household effects - please ring Mark on 636 590 557, who will arrange collection from you.

Ñandú in the big-time TENERIFE’S successful Ñandú rugby club had a taste of the bigtime when the youngsters competed in Spain’s National Under-18 Tournament last weekend in Vilajoyosa, near Benidorm. They had mixed fortunes against seasoned

teenagers, losing two matches against the toughest of opposition on the opening day, then winning Sunday’s double challenge to lift the Bronze Cup. It was a superb achievement in their first encounter against Spain’s big boys. And,

having already clinched the Under-18 Canarian League championship, they again demonstrated that Ñandu rugby club have a talented, dedicated group of players with a great future. They will return to the Spanish National Tournament next year,

older, wiser, and with increased physicality, to again challenge the best Spain has to offer. Nandu officials thank all the sponsors, namely Monster Rewards, Tenerife Island Rentals, Wheeler Dealer, Blevins Franks and The Pub, to name a few. Without

you, this great experience would not have been possible. If you would like to be part of this ever-growing club, or would like to help support us, please contact Paul on 664 361 086. As for the tournament, teams on Saturday were

split in to groups to decide the Cup Groups for Sunday’s matches. Ñandu were chosen for Group A, also named The Group of Death because it included Cajasol Ciencias, Madrid Region champions, and CRC Pozuelo, the Seville Region champions.

Ñandu 20 Vilajoyosa 7

THE boys were in good spirits as they prepared to face the current champions, who boast a back-line glittered with youth internationals. The first half saw Ñandu dominate the forward battles, turning over opposition ball on numerous occasions. Ñandu’s players had never performed at this level before, and some had been playing rugby for months only. And, with 11 of the team playing in an age-grade up, they failed to register any points. But a key consolation was they they proved they have one of the best young packs in Spain - and can compete with the very top teams!

The home side started hard and fast, but Ñandu's defence stood strong. The pack began to win the set-pieces, enabling the backs to open the ball in the 10th minute, with Ryan Cox crossing for the first try. Ñandu's forwards continued to push on, with Danila Borisov scoring after a typically-battering run. It was 10-0 and the team really started to play. The match was intense and fierce, with two penalties being converted by centre Gabri Trujillo, who also added a conversion. The second half saw two more excellent tries by Ñandu: flanker Facu Patsouris added to his impressive season’s tally as did prop Gregor Prieto. Vilajoyosa responded with a fine try of their own, but to no avail.

Ñandu 0 Pozuelo 26

Ñandu 13 El Toro 10

With El Toro defeating Vilajoyosa, the final match of the day was, in fact, Ñandu's own cup final. But El Toro battered their line in the first five minutes, the ball being held up twice over the try-line. The pressure resulted in a penalty for El Toro, leaving Ñandu 3-0 down. But good play by Ñandu's forwards resulted in a penalty of their own, taking it to 3-3. Ñandu, with courage, fought back, battling through the middle with their forwards. After several phases, lock William Hernandez scored a magnificent try, his first for Ñandu! It was converted by Gabri Trujillo to give Ñandu a surprise 10-3 lead. The game was well and truly on. The second half was a cauldron of pressure, for players and spectators alike, with both sides hammering each other. With two minutes to go, El Toro mounted a fast move, going over for their first try, which was converted to leave the score all-square at 10-10. A draw would have suited El Toro because that’s all they needed to win the Bronze Cup on points difference … the pressure was building! Ñandu pushed on, showing character and heart beyond their years, as they forced their way upfield, winning a penalty for the last kick of the game. Amid complete silence in the stadium, Gabri Trujillo stepped up and slotted the ball through the posts. It was an unbelievable moment in the club’s short history, and the final whistle followed. Every Ñañdu player and supporter went mad! Ñandu had won the Bronze Cup, which was an amazing achievement considering the big age-difference. Overall, the weekend demonstrated that Ñandu Rugby Club have a talented, dedicated group of players with a great future. They will return to the Spanish National Tournament next year, older, wiser, and with increase physicality, to take on the best Spain has on offer again. Nandu officials would like to thank the club sponsors, namely Monster Rewards, Tenerife Island Rentals, Wheeler Dealer, Blevins Franks & The Pub, to name a few. Without you this great experience would not have been possible. If you would like to be part of this ever-growing club, or would like to help support us, please contact Paul on 664 361 086. After regrouping, the boys’ mission was to put together a performance against the region champions of Madrid. Again, with a dominant forward pack, the team began to put phases together and attacked the opposition line. Early penalties in key moments and areas of the field presented Pozuelo with opportunities to escape their own 22 and play in the Ñandu half. As the game progressed, Ñandu struggled to get into the game and, again, the physical size and prowess of the 18-year-old Pozuelo back-line continued to ask questions of the Ñandu backs. In time, the opposition players powered over, but nobody could query the effort made by the boys, who, at 16, did not compare in size with their opposite numbers. The opposition scored in the first half and then again in the second to secure the win. In conclusion, the first day saw the boys disappointed with the results, but enthusiastic about the challenge, aware they were losing the psychological battle. But with the day’s experience in the locker, the boys were primed for Day 2. Despite uncharacteristic defeats, Nandu were in a good place, believing they had the potential to compete at this level. Nandu regrouped for the games against home side Vilajoyosa RC, and El Toro RC, a formidable Majorcan side. But again, the boys were up against it, both physically and in experience.

Oasis Fm Fantasy League

Top-10 battle still rages ANOTHER season draws to a close, with just one more round of games to play. We know who won and we know who has been relegated. We still have a little excitement, though, because the runners-up spot, and the final Champions League place, are still up for grabs. In the Oasis Fm Fantasy League It looks cut and dried at the top, but there is still a battle raging for top-10 spots! There were some midweek games played, so

some players had the chance to score double points - and this reflected on the point-scoring team of the week. Sunderland led the way after their great escape, with four players featuring. Norwich then had two as they came close to survival, and the rest came from Man Utd, Southampton, Leicester, Swansea and Crystal Palace. Dwight Gayle from Palace was highest scorer, based on one game (13), but Sunderland’s

Koné had the highest total after two games played (21). The Oasis Fm Fantasy League top four stayed the same, and it looks as though Frank Devaney will be crowned winning manager because he is now 82 points clear. There was movement within the top 10 as teams jostled for position, and Oasis Fm’s very own Roscoe will be happy at his move into ninth spot, leapfrogging colleague Chris Elkington, who dropped to 10th. Just five points

separate them as they look to be Oasis Fm’s top dog! The team of the week produced one of the highest scores we have seen this season as Tony Pub, with his Landlord’s 11 side, scored 118 points. He used his bench-boost option, but was helped out with some high point-scorers in his starting X1 - Van Aanholt (17), Mata (16), Payet (12), Martial (12) and Defoe (11). Only Hazard (12) scored well off the actual bench.

We will round things up next week with this season’s final report! Fantasy Football League

You snooze... you draw CD Tenerife 1 Elche 1 By Roscoe ANOTHER two points were dropped last weekend, and the promotion dream is nearly over for another season. Yet this was actually a decent display from Jose Marti’s men.

Elche have been in excellent form recently and they came to make a match of it. There was little to choose between the two teams in the first half as they both had their chances. The second half promised to be a better contest, and so it proved to be because each side need a result. Earlier in the day, a few matches went the way of Tenerife and Elche in the race to make the play-offs. This gave the second half a slight cuptie feel. Tenerife were bossing the game. They had more possession, corners, and most of it was being played in their opponents’ half. Suso was having another of his “inspired” days and a moment of his magic opened the scoring. Choco Lorenzo was chasing a ball down the right channel but had two defenders for company. Instead of sitting off, Suso gambled and got his reward when the ball bobbled off Choco’s ankle. Suddenly, Suso was away. He was in acres of space as he charged into the box. Looking up, he spotted that Nano had caught up with play. This gave centre-back Armando a real problem. His experience told him to leave Nano and chase down Suso, which he did. But his team-mates were not as sharp and, as Armando charged over, Suso picked his mo-

ment and, with an inchperfect pass, played in his young team-mate. Nano smacked the ball first time past a stranded Javi Jimenez, and the Heliodoro erupted. It was the first touch of quality in the match. And Nano should have put the game to bed shortly afterwards. The ball was tossed towards Choco on the halfway line. This attracted Armando and, for reasons only he will know, the other centreback, Angel. Choco leapt early and flicked the ball on. Armando was beaten but Angel was caught ball-watching, and it cleared him as well and Nano was in. He is a real speed-ball when the hammer is down and he was oneon-one with Javi. For some reason, most football fans believe it’s a gimme when you have such a chance. But I’d say the odds are 5050, rather than the “99 times out of a hundred” rubbish you often hear. Not only is there a lot to do, there is still a lot that can go wrong.

Nano had a bit of time to weigh up his options and, even though Javi moved towards him, he never actually looked like getting to the ball. This gave Nano time to control it and, as he entered the area, Javi was in-between the penalty spot and the six-yard area. Do you round the keeper? Do you place it low into the bottom corner? Do you curl the ball into the top corner, or go for a cheeky chip? Even now I’m not sure which option he went for as his effort is still waiting to land - like a Jamie Vardy penalty! On the replay, it seems to me that the ball bobbled just before he kicked it. Anyway, it would prove a season-ending miss. And Nano doesn’t deserve that. He has had an excellent breakthrough campaign. He finished the match in tears and that, in part, was down to another clown ref. For the third straight week, an official has cost Tenerife. The CDT President stopped just

short of claiming a conspiracy this week in a press conference. But if you weren’t paranoid, you might feel that the league does have it in for Tenerife. This cannot keep hap-

pening. It’s now beyond incompetence. This week’s clown with a whistle is Jorge Valdes. He is a journeyman ref who is a regular arbiter in Tenerife matches. A few years back, he gave two penalties in a match at Osasuna. Both were, shall we say, generous. On Saturday, he gave the soft one and didn’t give the “clearer” one. Tenerife’s shout was for a challenge on Choco which, in real time, looked a solid shout. In slow-motion, which, of course, the ref doesn’t have, it looked stonewall. So when, a few minutes later, Valdes pointed to the spot after adjudging that Raul Camara had clipped Raul Moreno, the players went bonkers. Moreno mis-controls a pass in the Tenerife area and goes across Camara, who is not interested in a challenge. Moreno leaves a leg, arches the back, then goes into a full-on swan dive, screeches like a Banshee and executes a perfect, three-roll tumble which, presumably, is the correct amount of time to roll if you want to con the ref. Even Cristiano Ronaldo would have been embarrassed. But it worked and the ball was placed on the spot.

I wrote last week about Pedro Leon. Last summer, Tenerife wanted him - and this summer he could be playing in the Premiership. But he is a poor traveller. So when he lined up to take the kick, Tenerife fans must have been confident. In the modern world, keepers study potential spot-kickers during the week’s training. I’m also hoping the players were briefed on Pedro’s travel-sickness. If they weren’t, why not? If they were, then can someone explain to me how they didn’t clear the ball after Dani saved Pedro’s effort? There were four Tenerife players in the penalty box. They were all in front of young left-back Javi Nobeljas. Choco kept his hands on his hips and didn’t move, while Saul, Vitolo and Camara all followed the ball in. The moment Dani saves the kick they all freeze, allowing Nobelias to breeze past them, have a cup of tea, tie his shoelaces and side-foot the ball past Dani Hernandez. Fair play to Dani as he jumps up and goes Banzai. As Nano will tell you, it’s small margins in this league which, ultimately, decide everything.

Premier League preview

City and United chase Champs League place on final weekend

By Adi Benson

Olympic Stadium, Bilic will get a good transfer kitty. If he spends it wisely, they could be a real force next time out. Prediction: Away win Last season: 2 - 2

smiles on their faces … and I wouldn’t bet against them getting one more win! Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-0

WITH just one more game remaining, there are still important Everton v league places up Norwich for grabs, and one Change has come to or two teams are Goodison Park, less than looking for some 24 hours after Everton’s dismal defeat at Sunderbig results. It’s land, following weeks of definitely game- fan pressure mounting on come Sunday against Roberto Martinez. As expected, but not afternoon! quite so quickly, perhaps,

Arsenal v Aston Villa

Arsenal should have challenged for the title this season, but they performed their usual collapse in the runin. However, all is not lost because they still have a chance to finish runners-up and, just as important, finish above bitter rivals Spurs. They just need a big favour from relegated Newcastle to make it happen. We know Villa are down after a disastrous season and, looking at the club and the squad, it could be some time before we see them back in the Premier League. It would be fitting if they could go out with a win. But with Arsenal having something to play for, I cannot see that happening. Prediction: Home win Last season: 5-0

Chelsea v Leicester

Chelsea gave their league title up this season with little more than a whimper, so it is apt that they should face this season’s champions on the final day. They must be really looking forward to providing the guard of honour! That said, they’ll want to close the season by beating their successors. For Leicester, this result won’t matter because they are still in party mode, and attention has already turned to next season and the Champions League. But with the pressure off, the players will go on the pitch and play with

the manager has been sacked and replaced by David Unsworth, the club’s Academy manager. They can still mathematically finish in the top half of the table but the season just has not been good enough from the club’s perspective. Thanks to Everton’s woeful midweek performance, Norwich are heading back down to the Championship. and I’m sure they will be fired up and looking for a win as their disappointing season draws to a close. Last season: N/A Prediction: Draw

Man Utd v Bournemouth

Champions League qualification was firmly in United’s hands before their midweek loss at West Ham. Surprisingly, they were beaten because of a mistake by De Gea, who has saved them so many times this season. They could still finish fourth, but they need a favour from Swansea. The Cherries will look back on this season and feel pleased at avoiding the relegation battle, securing safety a few weeks ago. They had a difficult start to the season, with some big injuries to key players. But they have taken points when they have needed to, and, if they get a result here, they could still climb a couple more places. Prediction: Home win Last season: N/A

Newcastle v Tottenham

This could have been a big game for both teams, but, with results

Swansea v Man City

going against them, Newcastle have now been relegated. They have looked a better side since Benitez took over but for me, Mike Ashley made the change too late in the season. If they can persuade Rafa to stay, they may come straight back up. Spurs have already got Champions League football, but they need a win here to ensure they finish runnersup and foil close rivals Arsenal from slipping in front of them. They have probably had a better season than they expected, and, with a few astute summer signings, should be back stronger in August. Prediction: Away win Last season: 1-3

Southampton v Crystal Palace

It depends on results elsewhere, but Southampton could still finish in fifth spot come Sunday’s final whistle. They will reflect on this season and regret their slow start. Had they been in the form they are in now, they could have given Leicester a run for their money in the chase for the title. Palace, who did start brightly but fell away in the second half of the season, have done well to avoid the fight for relegation, just! I think Alan Pardew’s job is safe for next season, but he needs to bring in some goal-scorers. They have one of the best defences in the league,

but the lack of goals has cost them. Prediction: Home win Last season: 1-0

Stoke v West Ham

Stoke were a club who, once upon a time, would have been happy with a mid-table finish. But with the addition of some quality, attacking players last summer, they were hoping to be battling for Europe this time out. A few tweaks will be needed in the close-season, but they are not too far away. West Ham, who have had a great season, said farewell to Upton Park in fine style by beating Man Utd on Tuesday night. With higher seasonticket sales and lower overheads in their new

Francesco Guidolin has finally been given the contract he deserves at Swansea. He has done an amazing job since taking charge and he has the Swans flying! Their win at West Ham will stay with the fans for a very long time. Man City breathed a sigh of relief when West Ham beat United on Tuesday, putting Champions League qualification back in their own hands. A win will see them secure fourth spot, but could Pellegrini cause mischief for the incoming Pep Guardiola by playing a weakened side as a two-fingers-up “salute” to the owners? Now that would be funny! Prediction: Away win Last season: 2-4

Watford v Sunderland

Watford have a good squad of players, but a question mark hangs over their manager as rumours gather pace that he will go in the summer. A new manager may come, bringing his own players and changing the team’s

balance. If that is the case, next season could be problematic. Sunderland have again completed their great escape after beating a woeful Everton side on Wednesday, ensuring that Norwich and Newcastle went down. Sam Allardyce will keep the manager’s job, obviously, but he now needs to try to buy the players who will turn Sunderland into a midtable club. Prediction: Draw Last season: N/A

West Brom v Liverpool

West Brom got through this season by just doing enough, from a points perspective. But after seeing what Leicester have achieved, they have to make changes and look further than being a club in the bottom half of the table. Recruitment is key, but I am not sure Tony Pulis has the profile to bring in better players. Liverpool could still finish a couple of places higher, but Jurgen Klopp will field a weakened side against West Brom as he looks towards Wednesday night and the Europa League final. He has gambled on winning it for a Champions League place, and let’s hope he has calculated that gamble correctly. Prediction: Away win Last season: 0-0
