Tourism boom is not a fluke Issue 954 20th May - 26th May 2016
ALL the experts agree: tourism is booming in Tenerife, and the number of visitors to our Island is set to grow over the next few years. There are a number of factors for this, but one of the biggest is the sterling work done by Turismo de Tenerife. Continued on Page 3

Our flourishing tourism Continued from Front This special department of the Tenerife Cabildo was created with the sole intention of boosting tourism in the island. Over the years, it has been responsible for some major changes to the Island’s infrastructure. The current head is Alberto Bernabe, who has performed admirably since being named Tourism Minister last August. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, who has a tourism background, had no hesitation in promoting the former Santa Cruz Deputy Mayor. Bernabe is a seasoned travel pro. After getting his degree in Economic Sciences from the University of La Laguna, his first job was as a Studies Director at Ashotel, the Island’s hotel representatives. This led to a host of positions in the influential group before his 2004 move to Turismo de Tenerife. And his step into politics was completed when he was named Deputy Mayor for Santa Cruz in 2011. Canarian Weekly caught up with Bernabe at the Futurismo travel conference in Los Cristianos yesterday (Thursday). This brought together the archipelago’s travel leaders, and Bernabe was happy to explain the secret of Tenerife’s success. “There are many reasons for this boom, which is going to last for many years, I am sure,” he said. “The main reason is down to our own effort. We have been working in this industry for many years with a lot
of success, I would say. “We know what we have to do, and we know what we have to offer. Tenerife has been wise enough to design a model that works in the private and public sector. It is all based on quality. And that is the key. “Globally, we now have that reputation. There are resorts which offer low prices and low quality, and they do that better than us! Those are battles we will lose, so we will go with quality - and that will win our war!” Bernabe started in the tourism sector at the end of the first boom cycle. But in 1995, the glory days were waning and it was clear to officials that something had to change. The tourist chief is quick to point out that it took a while to get everyone on board. “It’s been hard.” he admitted. “I know that we now have people who are coming here on holiday for the first time in 15 years. They do not recognise the Island, and that’s a good thing. “So when the 1.7 million Brits come over now, they discover the new Island. And they tell this to their friends, to their families and so on - so every year, we have a better position in the UK market. “Every year, we have more and more Brits coming here. They see the new Island and see things we didn’t have 15 years ago. Things like new hotels, a new infrastructure, and I think the Island has improved a lot, and this is recognised by the Brits.” There are many areas and different political
landscapes in Tenerife. Town Halls, local government, a regional government plus the national interests can make it hard to get anything done. But Bernabe says that when it comes to tourism, everyone is singing from the same sheet. “I would say that is the key to the long-term success for the last 20 years,” he said. “In 1992, when the company Tenerife Tourism Corporation was created, it covered the public institutions and the privates, such as the hoteliers, the airports, agencies, everybody. And we shared a board of advisers who worked on all the public policies and the public budgets together. “We shared all of our
strategy. This made us stronger and, when we work together, and have single direction we go further.” Some tough decisions were made in early years, and Bernabe remembers the moment when everything started to turn around. “I recall that time, and we had some companies that made a difference,” he said. “Bahia del Duque was phenomenal. When they built that hotel 20 years ago, and even today, it still looks brand-new. “They started a new era, which was so far ahead of all of us. This hotel made us feel that it was possible for us to be able to reach the top of the list in terms of quality hotels, and the quality of the Island.
“This gave us a goal and showed us the direction for the Island. And without stopping, I feel we have now made it.” Bernabe spends a lot of his time overseas, and it shows. His English is perfect, and, when he talks about Tenerife, he does so with passion. It’s easy to see how he has been able to broker so many new deals with airports, airlines and tour companies. Progress and quality are two words he uses a lot, especially when he talks about the ‘new Tenerife’ saying: “Who would have thought 20 years ago that we would have a Siam Park? It’s the best in the world. “And yet we still have a way to go. We haven’t reached the final destination at all. We have a lot do to and a lot to cover. We have to keep five million people who are visiting us yearly, and we cannot afford to slip from our progress. He added: “This is all down to hard work. There is no magic in this sector; there is no magic solutions. It is the constant work being done and globally, and it’s not just about the hotels. “Gastronomically, our levels have risen so much. Our restaurants, well, they are up there. We couldn’t have believed it 20 years ago that today there are five Michelin-star restaurants in Tenerife. Is that because we are lucky? No! “It’s because many people from the hotels, from the restaurants and from the industry have worked with one idea - ‘let’s offer quality’ and the rest will follow.”
The Tourism Minister is not painting the perfect picture. He admits there are still a lot of things that need to change, and he knows what the priorities are. “We are not going to hide our heads in the ground,” he said. “We have had some delays, especially with the roads, which we have to fix - and fast! The money is there and I would love to have the capacity to make it happen straight away. But this does take time! “Also, there is a need and a space for some new hotels. All of them will be 5-star hotels and we will upgrade those that are 4-star. Again it’s good news and it’s great to have new hotels. “And these will help attract a new type of client; for example, the Hard Rock Hotel, which will bring new markets as well. “We are working hard in the United States and Canada, where we have always been quite weak. But these new hotels will allow us to target those markets. It’s amazing how much one new hotel can open something up.” When he is not working, Bernabe is a keen runner, trekker and mountain-climber. It’s a metaphor for what he believes our island can achieve. “So many people think we have five million visitors because we are lucky. They say, ‘we have the climate and that’s why’. “But that is a lie. We all work hard for what we have. And if the one million people who live here - even if not directly connected to tourism - work together, then we will succeed.”

We want the cheap inter-island flights CANARIAN President Fernando Clavijo has called on the Acting Spanish Government’s Minister of Development, Ana Pastor, to show some equality in flight prices.
This week, the flat rate of 30 euros for flights between islands was accepted for the Balearic Islands, and Clavijo is demanding that this concession be extended to the Canary Islands. He reminded the press this week that, from April 13th, the Congress of Deputies approved a proposition of law, submitted by Nationalist Deputy Ana Oramas, of the obligation to establish a flat fee on flights between the Canary Islands.
“Oramas said that it was an old Canarian demand that was always refused by the Ministry of Public Works, yet now seems to apply in the Baleares. “This isn’t right,” he added “I applaud that the demands of the Balearics have been met, but we must have the same treatment for the Canary Islands.
“We do not just want the flat rate but also the changes in the next round of public-service obligations, to allow the introduction of social tariffs for students, seniors, children and people with disabilities.” The Canarian Executive, which will lobby the Acting Minister, warns that the upcom-
ing General Election will slow down their demands. But Pastor announced this week that within a fortnight, a jointcommittee between the Ministry and the Balearic Islands will meet to finalise the accounts, which will be submitted to Brussels to rubber-stamp the flat rate.
Arona probes disaster area ARONA Council is researching the cause of the Los Cristianos disaster, in which a building on Calle Amalia Alayón collapsed on 14th April, resulting in the deaths of seven people.
Today (Friday), forensic studies will begin, with engineers from several specialised companies - employing ultrasound, electrical tomography, scanners and drones - evaluating the structure. And, next week, samples will be taken from the side of the section of the building still standing. This will be demol-
ished inside the next fortnight, which means the evacuation of several surrounding buildings for health and safety reasons. Along with witnesses statements, tests and research will be conducted on the concrete and steel. The procedure will lead to a preliminary evaluation, aimed at revealing the state of the building before the accident. In addition, the engineers will conduct a detailed assessment of the current status of the surrounding buildings, seemingly not affected by the collapse. The forensic engineering work will end with the preparation of a report, to be delivered to Arona Council within two months.
Cabildo approves fortune to smarten National Park
Variable Price Index
THE Cabildo has approved a grant of around 1.9 million euros for the conservation and maintenance of Teide National Park’s infrastructure, having recently taken over management responsibilities.
And at a meeting this week with the Governing Council, they approved the new funding. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said: “The investment is dedicated to one of the most important, natural areas of Tenerife, and reaffirms the commitment made when we took over its management. “There is basic maintenance of infrastructure that needs attend-
ing to, and support work activities are also provided.” About 1.2m euros will be allocated to carry out the cleaning and maintenance of the infrastructure over the next two years. The works include the removal of rubbish and waste from the National Park, and maintenance services for repairing infrastructure damaged by weather and visitors.
In addition, some 700,000 euros is earmarked for support services for public use, and activities through interpreter guides and information outlets. There will also be a visitor centre and information points. The Cabildo also approved the hiring of 16 professionals to boost citizen participation throughout the Island, and promoting the national park.
THE Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.6% in the Canary Islands in April compared with March, although it was a 1% fall against the same month last year, says the National Statistics Institute (INE). Rising product groups such as clothing and footwear, whose rates improved 11.4%, determined the CPI increase. But against April 2015, the decline in prices was staged mainly by the housing, transport and leisure and culture sectors, which recorded decreases of 5.3%, 4.8% and 3.1%, respectively. In the Islands as a whole, the CPI has fallen in the last year in all communities, especially
in Castilla-La Mancha, and also in Valencia, Cantabria and Castilla and Leon. The April CPI fell 1.1% year-on-year - 30% more than in March, mainly through cheaper prices of package tours and electricity. For communities, the CPI rate slipped in all autonomies. The biggest decline was in Aragon, where the rate fell 40% from the previous month to stand at 1.2%. But the INE also recorded that prices rose in April in all communities, especially in Extremadura, Murcia and La Rioja, and in the autonomous city of Ceuta.

Hard Rock Hotel set to lift Playa Paraiso PLAYA Paraíso’s new, spectacular, 7 0-m illio n - eu ro Hard Rock Hotel, which is scheduled to open on 15th October, is already taking bookings!
The luxurious hotel will stage an official opening in December. But, as Sergio Zertuche, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for the Palladium Hotel Group owners, said: “We already have a reservation for 16th October, so we have to be open by then!” He was speaking at a press conference, held in the FIT centre, in Adeje’s Centre for Tourism Development. It followed his morning session with the Adeje authorities and local Playa Paraíso businesses, discussing the area’s update in general, and the changes a hotel of this quality and kind would bring to the zone. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said the hotel would act as a market accelerator in what was already an attractive area, “increasing the competitive element”. He added: “We have an opportunity to renew the zone with a product that is completely different, and focus in a new way, which will complement our move
to diversify our tourism offer.” During the meeting, concerns of the small and medium companies locally were also taken on board, with measures discussed about how best meet the new kind of clientèle the Hard Rock Hotel will bring to Plays Paraíso. This will the second Hard Rock Hotel in Spain - the first is in Ibiza - and Sergio gave assurances that the new Playa Paraíso version would not be a copy of the Ibiza hotel, adapting instead to its new surroundings. However, many of the elements will be similar, and the hotel will, in the main, cater for young couples and families. There will be three pools, a variety of restaurants, a beach club, rock spa, body-rock gym and a Hard Rock Roxity Kids’ Club, among the
amenities. Local residents will also be able to enjoy many of the facilities, restaurants and bars open to the public. Sergio said the hotel would also have a ‘Vibe Manager’, “who will look after the vibe in each zone, and check the music is right”. So there could be someone playing an electric guitar solo at the pool bar, and something completely different in another part of the hotel, with “popup performances” as well. The Palladium representative said the company had invested 70 million euros in the hotel, which is being fashioned by renovating an existing hotel in the resort, converting it from a 3-star to a 5-star hotel - something his company has completed before “very successfully”.
Canaries health service does not impress many THE Canaries Public Health service received a paltry 5.8 out of the 10 scoring points - the second-worst - in a ranking survey conducted throughout the whole of Spain. The Ministry of Health conducted the study, in collaboration with the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS). And, nationally, the average is 6.38 according to the 2015 health-survey barometer.
Navarre, with a score of 7.38, and the Aragoneses (7.18), are tops, while Melillenses, in Valencia, and the Canary Islands received the lowest points total of all. Above the national 6,38 average, apart from Navarra and Aragon, are communities whose citizens have a better opinion of public health, such as the Basque Country (6.96), Cantabria (6.93), Murcia and La Rioja (6,88), Asturias
(6.83), Castilla y León (6.70), Baleares (6.62) and Madrid (6.59). On the opposite side, Melia are the worst value of this service, with a score of 5.40 – even lower than the Canaries’ 5.80. Regarding emergencycare hospitals, which received a 5.86-point average, the Aragoneses have the best score (6.76), followed by the Basques (6.68) and Cantabria (6.49).
The number of rooms will be reduced from over 1,000 to 624, but the higher cost of the overnight stays will bring different types of clients. A four-phase plan has been developed by FIT (Factory for Tourism Innovation), in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, Tenerife
Cabildo and Tenerife Tourism, to help renovate the zone with the existing small and medium enterprises in Playa Paraíso. It will include a series of innovation workshops, point-of-sales diagnostics, assistance on interior renovations and upgrades, and an overall improvement
of the resort’s tourist spaces. The aim, within the reach of experts in commerce, sales and clients, is to improve and upgrade the local commercial offerings to meet the needs of new clients and, at the same time, improve the income potential of the businesses themselves.

Audiovisual sector spreading its wings THE Canaries is enjoying a business boom in a sector which continues to grow, almost under the radar. In fact, there are 457 audiovisual companies in the Canary Islands?
These separate businesses account for over 5% of all Spain’s companies in the sector, according to the eCanarias Report 2015, prepared by the Ministry of Economy, Industry, Trade and Knowledge. For its part, the audiovisual sector of the Islands has grown by 5.5% year-on-year and, last year, another 24 firms opened their studio doors.
More than half of the Islands’ companies in the audiovisual sector are dedicated to film activities, video and television programmes (54%); followed by broadcasting companies (29%), and those dedicated to programming and broadcasting services (16%). And, according to the eCanarias 2015 report, audiovisual companies are, in relative terms, rated above the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector regarding the number of employees. Some 60% of ICT businesses have no employees, while 6.6% employ 10 or more staff.
Abuse of anti-biotics won’t kill infections NEARLY one in five Spaniards admits to taking antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription. But though selfmedication is a problem on the mainland, it does not appear to be here, it seems. Not one of the Canarian respondents said he or she took them without medical permission. So says the data given by the Health Barometer 2015, released this week by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality and Sociological Research Centre (CIS). The abuse of these drugs concerns worldwide health authorities because, if not used ra-
tionally, and only when prescribed by a physician, the bacteria that fights the infection may end up becoming resistant, which will question the pill’s effectiveness. Spain is among those European countries with the highest consumption of antibiotics, with 31.5 million containers prescribed in the National Health System, despite the NHS having a National Plan to reduce the risk of resistance to these drugs. Some 14.4% of nearly 7,800 participants in the survey, conducted between March and October, said they had taken the drugs in the two weeks prior to its
completion, with significant differences by regions. So while in the Balearic Islands and Castilla-La Mancha, antibiotics are used by around one in five citizens (22.4% and 21.3% respectively), in others such as Navarra (5.2%) and Aragon (7.1%) the consumption is less common. The problem came when asked about the reason for its use because, although a majority percentage (81.1%) did via their own doctor, 18,8% acknowledged taking them of their own accord. This abuse is greater in the Balearics and Andalucia, where up to
one in three users does so without his/her doctor prescribing it (37.5% and 31.7% respectively), followed by Extremadura and Aragon (25%), Basque Country (22.7%), Castilla-La Mancha (22.2%) and Galicia (20%). But in Navarra, the Canary Islands and Cantabria, not one of the respondents took them on his/her own. In addition, survey data shows how this abuse is higher in men (23.2%) than women (14%), and also among the younger population. Thus, while the 18-24 group sees 32.3% take them on their own, those over-65 (8.3%) barely do so.
Tourism degree winners at Adeje Summer University ADEJE Council and the University of La Laguna (ULL) have outlined details of the 24th Adeje Summer University, as well as the poster for this year’s university, designed by local artist Conrado Díaz.
Tourism, Education, Communication and Health are just some of the themes on offer this year, reflected in the eight courses, which run from 15th July, together with 15 workshops. The cost of signingup for courses has dropped for 2016 and prospective students will pay just 25 euros, and 10 euros for workshops. Students from outside the borough of Adeje can also use transport from La Laguna and Santa Cruz for just five euros. There will also be parallel musical, artistic and gastronomy activities between 15th-22nd July in the Adeje Cultural centre, the campus for the annual Summer University.
Other municipal buildings will also host a number of workshops, all organised by Adeje’s Education Department and the University of La Laguna. Registration is open now, via webpage www. uvadeje.es or in person at the University of La Laguna or Adeje Cultural Centre. In the tourism area, the courses will deal with issues such as new ways to set up overnight-stay businesses, dealing with climatechange in the tourism industry, and courses in news media and transparency. Buddhism and medi-
tation, already of huge interest, is another course on offer, as is the one offering instruction in the prevention of violence in schools and in the home. Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, inaugurating the course programme, said: “We will soon cel-
ebrate 25 years of this Summer University, thanks to the excellent relationship we have with the University of La Laguna”. He said the relationship between the university and tourism was fundamental, given the huge importance he places on training, the
advancement of knowledge, human interaction and professionalism within the tourism industry. And he added that the courses on offer this year were designed to meet the needs of society. Antonio Martinón Cejas, ULL Rector, thanked Adeje Council for its ongoing collaboration, adding: “We hope to continue to advance our partnerships with the institutions, and our relationship with the local society and our links to Adeje are part of that.” He said that over the Summer University’s
24 years, there had been different rectors, but each with the same commitment to this programme, given its importance and the opportunity it brings to the residents and students in the south of Tenerife. He also referred to the Tourism degree, now offered in Adeje “a course which will do much to improve tourism here”. Rector Cejas also said: “We are developing the Master programme now, which has direct relevance to the South of the Island and this borough”. He also took time to meet the 30 finalyear students, who will graduate from the Tourism Degree Course this year in Adeje. There will also be a number of non-official courses on offer during one week in July, including Gospel singing with singer Latonius. The Fundación Disa is this year’s main sponsor of the Summer University. This is a branch of the Grupa Disa, developing the company’s social dimension in different aspects which contribute to sustainable development in the parts of society in which it is operating.

Cabildo chief steps in to speed up our roadworks
The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Next door nutter? MOST people like a good whodunnit. and nothing grabs the attention more than a true crime drama.
I’ve spent decades reading every book available on the JFK assassination, hoping to find the one missed fact that leads to the truth. So I was fascinated to read this week about a story in Germany which suggests that a pensioner, who died in 2014, could have been behind a spate of sadistic killings decades ago. A man identified as Manfred S was 67 when he died in a small town near Frankfurt. Investigators now believe he may been responsible for the murders of five women and a teenage boy. Apparently, suspicions were raised when his daughter found a woman’s remains inside a barrel in a garage, a few months after the pensioner had died. The German media seem to think there is no doubt that he is the killer. Which makes you wonder how he could have gotten away with it for so long. In America, there are dozens, maybe hundreds of serial killers on the loose. Some get nabbed eventually, while oth-
ers take their secrets to the grave. But it’s the unsolved ones that grab the attention especially the cases that seem to stop as suddenly as they started. The most famous, of course, is Jack The Ripper. Most people now believe that James Maybrick was Jack and he stopped his killing spree only after he himself was murdered by his wife, Florence. In America they scratch their heads over the Zodiac Killer. This whack job terrorised northern California in the late Sixties and early Seventies. Robert Graysmith’s brilliant book points the finger at Arthur Allen, but he died before any charges could be filed. Canada has the Highway 16 murders, which started in 1969 and saw the last victim in 2006. What made the person stop? The important thing is that the murderers did cease, but it wouldn’t stop you thinking about them if you broke down late at night on that stretch of road. And have you noticed how all those caught are always described as being “normal” or “nice”? You just never know who you are living next to!

EVERY motorist knows that something must be done to improve the standard of the Tenerife roads. And now, Cabildo President Carlo Alonso is on the case.
He said this week: “The Ministry of Public Works’ priority should be to improve the roads in Tenerife. The situation on the roads deserves the utmost attention of the Government.” In his view, “Tenerife is where road congestion around the archipelago is worse, and where more black-spots occur. There are 40 of the 50 that exist in the Canary Islands. Almost 70% of these blackspots are on the TF-1 and TF-5. “As politicians, we talk about security. Well, this situation experienced by drivers daily is worrying. We cannot afford further delays. The Canary Islands Government has to start now to solve these problems. “I’m constantly talking with the President
of t h e Canary Executive and the Minister of Public Works to address these issues.” Carlos Alonso last week met Regional Councillor Ornella Chacon and they discussed, among other matters, the contractawarding this year for improvements to the
TF-5. Alonso said: “We are making an ongoing assessment of the current situation and want to establish a completion of the ongoing route projects. “Also, we need to finish the TF-5 motorway improvements, complete the closure of the insular ring and the expansion of the TF-1 motorway at Las Chafiras, among other issues.”
As for finishing the insular ring, Alonso stressed the commitment of the Canarian Government to complete the pending section between Santiago del Teide and Adeje after the summer. He added: “A funding strategy for the rest of the work is being arranged through the General Tax Traffic Companies (IGTE).”
Canaries get EU boost THE European Union Social Fund will invest another 191 million euros in the Canary Islands over the next few years. It will be spent on the quality, effectiveness and sustainability of education and vocational training for young people to enter the labour market. Luis Padilla, the Canarian Government Deputy Finance Minister, said the EU’s financial framework means the archipelago will get a significant increase in resources until 2020.
He said the budget would be distributed in three main areas. The first is sustainability and quality of employment. It is endowed with 52m euros and aims to promote access to employment and labour mobility. Another axis is social inclusion and combating poverty, which has been allocated 49.3m euros, to end all forms of discrimination. In addition, education and training will have 84.9m euros to improve the quality, effectiveness and sustainability.
These policies, sponsored by the EU, are “very important,” said Padilla, because, in his opinion, they will “allow a more favourable environment for job creation”. Alongside this programme, which is part of the European Strategy 2020, complementary measures are envisaged to promote the growth of the Canary Islands, such as the Public Investment Programme or the Canary Development Fund. The Social Fund has approved 23 pro-
grammes for Spain, which is over 8.5bn euros, said Emma Toledano, European Commission representative for this initiative. She added that the fund plays a “vital role that helps regions face the economic and financial problems the current crisis poses”. This programme also supports reforms to reduce early schoolleaving, hiring doctoral students at universities and research centres. In addition, it plans to tackle gender-equality in business.

Birth rates so low in Canary Islands THE Canaries is among the communities with the lowest birth and fertility rates. On average, just one child per woman is born in the archipelago (1.04), together with Galicia (1,07) and Asturias (0.9) as the lowest.
That’s according to the Evolution of the Family in Spain 2016 report, presented by the Institute for Family Policies (IPF). And these findings coincided with the 22nd anniversary of the International Day of Families. The Canaries is one of nine communities with a rate lower than the national average of 1.32 children per woman, which, according to the IPF, is “very small and well below the EU average of 1.57”. All regions have an average age of motherhood above the European Union norm of 30.1 years. And the Canary Islands has the second-lowest average age at 31.2 years - 1.1 years older than the European average, but
six months below the 31.8 national average. No Spanish autonomous region reaches the three-membersper-household mark, the average being 2.51. And the Canary Islands is above average in the numbers per household, with 2.6. The IPF warns that the number of people getting married has fallen 25% since 1990, and the decline would have been greater but for the number of international citizens getting wed in Spain. The Canaries (37.5 years), followed by the Balearic Islands (37.1), Catalonia (36.1) and Madrid (35.7) have the highest average age of a couple marrying for the first time. In the last 10 years, the average age has risen by 5.7 years for men and 4.8 years in women. And the Canary Islands, where six out of 10 children are born out of wedlock, is by far the region with the highest number of births outside of marriage.

Tyre blaze leaves huge toxic cloud PEOPLE residing near a “toxic cloud”, caused by an incredible, burning tyre dump near Madrid, were forced to leave their homes by local officials in the Quinon de Sesena area, where 9,000 people live, for fear of their health.
However, some 8,000 residents had already deserted their homes, leaving just 1,000 people to get away. Investigators believe the fire was started deliberately early last Friday. Emergency services called to the Sesena town, 35km south of Madrid, sent 10 teams of fire-fighters, who battled the blaze all day in what is known as the Tyre Cemetery, or the
Graveyard of Tyres. They also used helicopters to douse the flames with water. An official at Madrid’s fire-fighting department said about a fifth of the dump was affected. There were no reports of any injuries, and some schools stayed closed for the day. A spokesperson said the decision to evacuate had been taken “to avoid risk”, and residents were tak-
en to a sports centre and several schools in buses and coaches. Ambulances were also made available - just in case. Pulmonologist Carmen Diego, specialising in lung conditions, told TV channel Antena 3 that inhaling large amounts of the smoke could cause chemical pneumonia and eye, nose and throat irritation, especially in children, old people and
those with weak respiratory systems. The dump at Sesena town, where 20,000 people live, is thought to be the largest in Europe, stretching over 25 acres (100,000 sq/m). Regional Government President Emiliano Garcia-Page, who visited the town on Friday, said: “The two petrolstation workers who raised the alarm told me the fire started on one side of the dump, which makes us think it was not a chance occurrence. “Besides, it was not that hot last night. But for now, we are not drawing any conclusions.” Drivers on nearby roads were warned to keep their car windows up because the toxic smoke could damage their health. The enormous, sprawling, tyre dump has attracted criticism from locals and environmentalists for years.

Firemen kept on the alert
THE Firefighters Consortium of Tenerife has completed a total of 64 call-outs relating to traffic accidents in the first four months of the year - a 25% increase over the same 2015 period.
And in 43.74% of these call-outs, the firemen had to release the occupants of wrecked vehicles. The remaining percentage relates to security work carried out by the firemen at the crash site, such as cleaning the road, disconnecting vehicle batteries, controlling spilt, combustible liquids, or various collaborations with the Guardia Civil, Local Police or the Road Maintenance Service. Consortium data shows that this figure represents an average increase over 2015 as a whole, when 135 roadaccident call-outs were recorded, says Tenerife Fire Consortium President Florentino Guzman Plasencia.
Home sales go sky-high
PURCHASES and sales of homes increased by 52.7% in the Canary Islands in March against the same month last year.
In fact, March enjoyed more than 2,199 extra transactions, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). The INE stats for the islands logged a total of 5,745 property transfers - and most of them in urban areas. It means that the Canaries lead the way in Spain with the largest increase of housing sale transactions, well clear of second-placed Extremadura, which saw a 34.6% rise. By contrast, there were two communities with a 3.1% decrease, namely La Rioja and Galicia. In the whole of Spain, home sales in March rose 16.8% over the same month of 2015, the country’s second successive month on the upward trend, and the biggest gain since August 2015.

Tui Group promises same-price holidays THE Tui Group travel company, faced with an overload of demand for bookings to Spain this summer, has pledged not to take advantage by raising prices.
Chief executive Fritz Joussen said customers “would not understand” if rooms cost more. He told Travel Weekly: “I expect a shortage of supply in Spain and this will lead to two things - we will hold our exclusive capacity to the end, and there will be a tendency for prices to go up in the destination.” Demand for Spain and the Canaries - this summer has swollen at the expense of Turkey, with industry analyst GfK reporting bookings to Spain up 25% year on year, but Turkey down 33%. However, Joussen insisted that Tui would
hold its prices to Spain, saying: “There are a lot of loyal customers to Mallorca, and they will not understand this year if the room costs more. “You can have a shortterm gain, but a longterm loss if you raise prices because customers remember. He added: “We are
not jumping into a destination and then going away. We are a long-term partner. The most important point is that customers return home happy from holiday.” Joussen also suggested that bookings to Turkey were improving, saying: “We will have an issue in terms
of margin but not in occupancy. Bookings are coming.” Tui reported strong UK trading in half-year results, released last week, with customer bookings and revenue for this summer both up 7%, year-on-year. Joussen said: “The UK performance is very strong because it has
very good systems and direct sales. We are also a bit less dependent on Turkey in the UK than in Germany. “It is a good message for our industry: people want to travel and don’t stay at home. The market is very solid, our performance is very solid. Our model is very strong.”
The final insult for gay referee? A FOOTBALL fan who recently shouted anti-gay slurs at Spain’s first openly-gay football referee, has been fined just 150 euros by a committee.
But for 21-year-old Jesus Tomillero this lat-
est abuse, in a string of homophobic verbal assaults, was enough to make him want to quit the job he loves. During a second division youth game, the referee awarded a penalty. A fan with visiting club San Fernando Isleño then shouted: “That’s the poof who was on television,” and other vile, derogatory comments,
unfit for publication. It was the final straw for a heartbroken Tomillero, who decided to call it a day after the match. The league’s oversight committee punished the offending fan with a 150-euro penalty, which the referee sees as “shameful” even though he is becoming used to such events. Jesús described his life in football as “humiliation after humiliation”, and added: “If the Andalusian Football Federation calls me, I will return to refereeing. He has so far not heard anything from the organisation, but clubs including Cadiz FC, and footballing greats such as Spain’s international goalkeeper Iker Casillas, have offered support. Prior to this recent incident, Tomillero had endured taunts from a staff member of a local team playing in a game he was refereeing. That official reported-
ly responded angrily to a call Tomillero made, calling him a “maricón” (faggot). He also added another comment also too crude to publish in Canarian Weekly. The staff member continually berated him for the next 45 minutes, while other staff present refused to call the police, and mocked Tomillero.
The homophobic staff member in that case received a fine of just 30 euros from, the league. A Change.org petition has been started, calling for an end to the homophobic insults delivered to officials such as Tomillero. But he still might blow the whistle on his refereeing career if they persist.
Panama Papers’ Canarian links THE infamous Panama Papers scandal has claimed a couple of Spanish politicians - and there is a strong link with the Canary Islands! Among the 214,000 “offshore companies” registered in the Mossack Fonseca offices in Panama, there are at least 23 addresses in the Canary Islands, according to an expose by TV channel
La Sexta. The papers show that more than 214,000 companies are registered with people from over 200 countries, and the 23 addresses in the archipelago relate to Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. It is unknown, yet, who is actually involved with the registered companies, or how much they have squirrelled away.

Foreign Secretary airplane is forced to by-pass Spain
AN RAF plane, transporting Britain’s Foreign Secretary to Gibraltar last week, was barred from flying over Spanish airspace, heightening tensions between the countries yet further.
Phillip Hammond was making an official, diplomatic visit to press home the Tories’ virtues of remaining in the EU when the fireworks went off. The incident came just a week after a US nuclear submarine threatened to ram a Spanish ship. In the latest aggression, Spanish authorities ordered the plane off its airspace, despite being told Hammond was onboard. Spain has, routinely, banned all British military planes from flying over or landing there since 1989 if their final destination is Gibraltar, as part of its protests over the Rock’s sovereignty. However, official sources confirmed that Spanish authorities had been informed that the flight was carrying the Foreign Secretary. But the jet still had to bypass Spain and fly over Portugal. The visit also prompted Spanish Justice Minster Rafael Catala to snub a Downing Street reception on the eve of David Cameron’s anticorruption summit. Hammond warned Gibraltarians that the UK would no longer be able to protect its interests if they voted to leave
the EU in the 23rd June referendum. But Andrew Rosindell has since warned that if Gibraltar voted to remain, it would find itself part of the EU region of Andalucía within a decade. The Tory MP for Romford, Essex, said: “It is sad that, even with a majority Conservative Government, our Foreign Office continues to pussy foot around Spain instead of slamming the door in its face. “As long as Britain continues to give the impression that we are not 100% committed, that there is room for negotiation over sovereignty, the Spanish will continue to behave as they are behaving, and relations will remain low. “It is shameful that Spain is treating a NATO ally in this fashion, yet all we do is to send diplomatic notes, or call in the Spanish Ambassador.” Gibraltar is likely to vote Remain in June’s EU referendum, with one Government source admitting: “Frankly, the EU has done more to
control Spain’s behaviour than the Foreign Office, though, admittedly, that’s not saying much.” Madrid has also threatened to close its border with Gibraltar in the event of Brexit, a reminder of the siege ordered by Spanish Dictator General Franco, which lasted from 1969 to 1982, long after his death. In a warning to Gibraltarians, however, Rosindell, Chairman of the British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies All Party Parliamentary Groups, said: “I think the message to Gibraltar should be that in the next decade, Britain could become so diminished within the EU that we no longer have the might and sovereignty to defend Gibraltar. “The short-sighted view by some in Gibraltar is going to backfire. Europe will be regionalised and Gibraltar will become part of the Andalucían region.” He added: “And Spain will win in the end, via the EU.”

Balearics staring at a tourism gridlock SOME of Britain’s favourite hot-spots, including Majorca, Ibiza and the other Balearic Islands, could be hit with swarms of extra tourists this summer.
Millions of European tourists are expected in the Balearics as “safehaven” alternatives to terrorism-risk areas such as Tunisia, Turkey and Egypt. But the Islands’ environmentalists believe the hotels, roads, beaches, water and sewer system could struggle to cope with the hordes of holiday-makers. Even the battle for spaces on sun-loungers around hotel pools and the beaches is likely to be fiercer than ever.
Gerard Hau, a spokesman for Grup Balear d’Ornitologia Defensa de la Naturalesa (GOB), an umbrella group for environmentalists in the Balearics, warned: “This will be a crazy year. “The infrastructure will not cope. Mallorca is booked out. We will have serious problems this summer.” It certainly seems to be the case, especially as Britain’s packageholiday companies have cancelled flights to areas of north Africa and Turkey, where tourists have been targeted by terror groups, claiming ISIS links. With that problem to the fore, travel agents have laid on extra flights and hotels in the Balearic Islands, the Spanish mainland, Italy and Portugal. However, many destinations have long since
Canaries’ economic crisis getting worse THEY say the numbers never lie. For most politicians and many public administrations, they believe the end of the economic crisis is within touching distance. But the reality could be something else.
In fact, far from improving, the situation has worsened for thousands of families in the Canary Islands, according to the Red Cross in Tenerife. This week, officials issued a press release that shows the population here remains socially vulnerable, and the numbers of those in potentially-dire financial risk has risen to around 30%. Specifically, the 2015 report of the Red Cross in Tenerife, presented in La Orotava, reveals that the
humanitarian organisation attended to a total of 22,777 cases last year, representing 8.6 % more than the previous year. These are people who were assisted through more than 30 projects and services of the institution, especially targeting the most vulnerable groups such as older people, immigrants, disabled people, patients with HIV-AIDS, children and youth in social difficulties, as well as the prison population and women at risk. And 79% of these people were in social emergency situations, covering basic needs, such
as the delivery of food, clothing, educational materials, hygiene products, and household cleaning. They also required economic benefits for the payment of aid necessities, sanitary help, transportation, water bills, electricity, housing rental and such. More than 1.3 million kilos of food has been distributed through the 2015 Food Aid Programme, co-funded to the tune of 85% by the Fund for European Aid for disadvantaged people (FEAD). This comprises 57 partner organisations in Ten-
erife - municipalities, local assemblies of Red Cross and other NGOs - reaching more than 20,000 people. Carlos Pinero, Provincial President of the humanitarian organisation, said: “We offer our capabilities for people who need us - employment, social intervention, health care, environmental actions, emergency, etc. “But we need help from businesses, individuals and public administration, to continue our work on behalf of the groups at greatest vulnerability.” He recalled that last year, the Red Cross also strengthened its Employment Plan, through which there were 21 projects implemented in 14 Tenerifian municipalities. As a result, a total of 2,372 people benefited, which was 43% more than in 2014.
sold out and prices have risen. The islands are also braced for a big rise in stop-overs by cruise ships, with 524 vessels expected in the Majorcan port of Palma, and Ibiza anticipating 154, which is 28% up on last year. The Balearics, with a permanent 1.1 million population, accommodated 13 million visitors last year. And Palma, the main airport in Majorca, is already pushing up its daily capacity of 66 flights to 100 this season. Mr Hau said: “People come here to enjoy life, but they are stressed because they can’t get a seat on the buses … there aren’t enough buses! And we already have 60,000 rental cars on this island. “We are second only to Hong Kong in our car density. The traffic
is gridlocked, so people are stressed. There are no parking places.” Mr Hau also suggested that the islands’ sewers may not be able to cope with peak holiday-season demand. As a result, there is a major problem of raw sewage reaching the beaches and bathing water. He added: “Last year, we had those problems because the system just couldn’t cope, and we obviously do not let people into the sea if this happens. “And if they can’t go in the sea sometimes, they are stressed. They are stressed because there is no room on the beaches; they are stressed and they won’t come back. “Tourism is a vital thing, but mass tourism is a tricky, tricky thing. This year will be a crisis year.”
Knife-attack suspect held
THE man accused of a vicious knife attack on another male in Veronicas in March has been detained on an attempted murder charge. The unnamed British suspect was arrested by the National Police at an airport in the Balearic Islands over the weekend. The incident occurred at dawn on 30th March, when a 22-year-old Brit was having a drink with his partner on the terrace of O’Neill’s pub, in Verónicas 1, in the centre of Las Americas. He was approached by the detained man, who is alleged to have attacked him. The victim, who sustained a serious cut on his neck, told police he knew
nothing about his attacker when he was in hospital. Officials identified the suspect earlier this month and spent the last few weeks trying to locate him, issuing a European-wide arrest warrant for the man, identified only as J.O. It transpires that he had been hiding in Tenerife since the attack and was captured, after taking a flight to Ibiza. According to sources in the airport there, he was intercepted and identified in passport control. Details of the arrest and charges have been presented to Arona Magistrate’s Court for extradition proceedings to be prepared.

‘Pay our impoverished pensioners a lot more’ NEARLY one million pensioners in the over-75 bracket are poverty-stricken and should be given more help from the British Government, according to a national charity.
Independent Age says ministers should do more to make older pensioners aware that they are allowed to top up their pensions with other benefits. It also suggests that the income of these strugglers is, on average, £3,000 a year less than that received by younger pensioners. Baroness Ros Altmann, the Pensions Minister, said the Government had run campaigns to encourage pension-credit claims. In its report, Independent Age defines the “poverty threshold” for a single pensioner as £182 a week before housing costs. For couples, its figure is £272 per week. Independent Age’s chief executive Janet Morrison said the UK’s 11.8 million pensioners could not be considered as “one group”. She added: “It would be foolish to assume that inequality simply ceases to exist at retire-
Feeding of the 3,000! FOR the fourth consecutive year, the Ministry of Education will be contributing to the cost of meals in school canteens this summer. About 3,000 students in 170 schools, whose families are on the breadline, will be given free lunches. Registration period for the summer places has now closed and Juan Rafael Bailon, general director of Ordering, Innovation and Educational Development, says around 1,000 fewer students than last year will have enrolled. “Last year there were more registered, but the attendance was also around that figure in
July and even less in August,” said Bailon. The Minister added: “This summer, the profile of the classes will be a little different as there will be more sports workshops, and computer lessons. We want more activities that will help children enjoy their classes.” There will also be a Language Immersion Programme, and the summer course has a budget of 1.4 million euros, of which the Ministry of Education will supply 900,000 euros, with the remaining 500,000 coming from the Canary Islands Employment Service.
Greek refugees in Spain ment age, but that is exactly what some of the recent rhetoric around ‘intergenerational unfairness’ does. “The ‘silent generation’ of older pensioners, renters and single women have missed out on many of the gains of recent years.” These, says the charity, include pension credit - a benefit that tops up low income. And an estimated 750,000 over75s, who are entitled to pension credit, are failing to claim. It adds: “There are 11.8m pensioners living in private households in the UK, of whom 4.8m are aged 75 and over.” And the charity’s report states that an estimated 950,000 pensioners in this older agebracket live in poverty. The report is based on
analysis of the Family Resource Survey for the financial year 2013-14, published by the government and National Statistics. It includes private households, but not those living in non-residential settings such as care or nursing homes. Baroness Altmann said the government wants pensioners to have the money they are entitled to. “I am concerned if older people feel uncomfortable about claiming, and we have tried to make the process easier,” she said. “We’re committed to protecting people’s incomes in later life.” She also said the government had increased the value of the state pension and pension credit “significantly in
recent years”, along with offering such benefits as free insulation for homes, and protecting winter fuel and coldweather payments for pensioners. BBC social affairs correspondent Michael Buchanan says welfare cuts since 2010 have targeted people of working age, while protecting the income of older people. For example, the state pension has been subjected to a triple-lock since 2010, ensuring it rises each year by the higher rate of inflation, average earnings or a minimum of 2.5%. Independent Age is also calling for pension credit – which, unlike the state pension, increases only in line with average earnings - to be subject to its own triple-lock.
SPAIN is set to receive its first group of refugees from Greece, as a part of a relocation programme by the European Union. The 87 refugees will arrived in Spain between Tuesday and Thursday (24-26th May), with 63 more promised at the beginning of June. Back in November, 18 refugees, 17 Eritreans and one Syrian national arrived in Spain from
Italy - and 32 more are expected to travel from there soon. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Sanataria said recently that the resettlement of 854 refugees from countries bordering Syria was approved in Spain last year. Over the next two-year period, the country plans to accept a total of 1,449 refugees as a part of the resettlement programme.
Migrants rescued
THE maritime rescue service has saved 44 sub-Saharan African migrants, who set off in a boat from the west coast of Africa in a bid to reach Spain. The service said the 42 men and two women were taken to Gran Canaria’s Argui-
neguin port after being rescued off the Western Sahara coast, some 200km south of the islands. Thousands of migrants try to reach Spain each year, either by attempting perilous sea journeys from the western Africa or across the Mediterranean Sea.
Parents to see son, who vanished six years ago
OVERJOYED parents, whose 32-year-old son was found alive in Spain, six years after disappearing from their Kent home, in Sittingbourne, are preparing for an emotional reunion. Pauline and Jim Green could not believe it when a police woman knocked on their door on 3rd May to tell them Matthew had been traced to the Continent after vanishing in 2010 - having said he was going to
see friends in London. But their joy turned to disbelief when she said they could not to contact him because of the laws of Data Protection and Human Rights. However, a medic at
a Spanish psychiatric unit has since emailed the couple, inviting them to visit Matthew. A tearful Mrs Green said he told them that Matthew, a roofer by trade, was refusing treatment, and asked if they could provide their son’s medical records and fly to Spain to help. The couple detailed how Matthew’s life spiralled out of control after he was falsely accused of rape at the age of 17. The girl later admitted her story was a lie and police dropped the case. Their distraught son, who turned to drink and drugs, was diag-
nosed with psychotic paranoia in 2008 and, following his disappearance two years later, they despaired of ever seeing him again. Mr Green said: “The email was a complete bolt out of the blue. Pauline and I were bursting with excitement. “We are just waiting for a few things to be put in place, and then we’ll fly out to Spain in a few days. But we still don’t know whether we will get to see him or not. “It’s a chance we have to take. We’ve waited for six years, so a few more days won’t matter. He will always be our son - our baby.”
The 64-year-old added: “I’ve always said to him that no matter what he’s done - right or wrong - I will fight tooth and nail for him. And that’s what we have done.” Matthew, who attracted the attention of Spanish authorities because he was “acting oddly”, was taken into care for assessment. Mr Green said: “It has been a roller-coaster, from not knowing for six years.” At the time of the alleged rape, in Sittingbourne in 2001, CCTV footage showed Matthew 40 miles away, on the forecourt of a petrol station in Ley-
tonstone, east London. The girl who had accused him was ordered to pay £25 costs after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice. She also had to pay Matthew £150 compensation. Mr Green said: “After everything that happened, I think it pushed him to the limit. From that time, the boy we knew as outgoing, football-mad and girl-mad, just seemed to stop. “He became very withdrawn and his social life just went to nil. He packed up playing football and he began isolating himself in his bedroom and ate meals upstairs.”

Eurovision Song Contest
Jamala’s icing on the Ukraine cake
JAMALA’S song about Soviet dictator Josef Stalin’s 1944 deportation of the Crimean Tatars was crowned 2016 Eurovision Song Contest last Saturday, in front of millions of TV fans all over Europe and beyond.
The 32-year-old Ukrainian singer made a plea for “peace and love” as she collected her trophy after beating Australia into second place - they competed for the second time after appearing as guests last year - with the bitterly-disappointed Russians third. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko hailed Jamala’s “unbelievable” victory with her song about Russianannexed Crimea. Poroshenko tweeted: “Yes!!! An unbelievable performance and victory! All of Ukraine gives you its heartfelt thanks, Jamala.” She is a member of Crimea’s Muslim Tatar minority, who saw her great-grandmother deported, along with
240,000 others, by Stalin in the penultimate year of World War II. Russia had earlier protested about Ukraine’s entry in the contest because of its “political” subtext - a violation of the contest’s rules. But Eurovision ruled that Jamala was “historical” in nature and allowed her song to compete. The win means, under Eurovision rules, Ukraine gets to host the contest next year. The consequences of Ukraine’s victory led one pro-Kremlin politician in Moscow to suggest that Russia might even boycott the event next year in protest. The result came as Ukraine held an annual day of remembrance for victims of political repression - including Soviet purges of Crimean Tatars. The theme of this year’s Eurovision was “Come Together”, a subtle message for Europe to stay united amid a backlash against migration to the continent and rising nationalism. Hosts Petra Mede and Mans Zelmerlow introduced a sombre mood to the contest by sug-
gesting it would allow countries to “set aside any differences we have” as Europe faces “darker times”. Some 26 finalists took part in the contest at Stockholm’s Globe arena, watched by more than 100 million viewers around the world including, for the first time, viewers in the United States. Graham Norton, again hosted the BBC One commentary, having taken over from Terry Wogan in 2009. Norton paid tribute to Sir Terry, who died in January, declaring that the contest was “bittersweet” for him this year. “Eight years ago, when I was lucky enough to get this job of commentating, Sir Terry very kindly and graciously phoned me, and the only bit of advice he had for me was, ‘Don’t have a drink before song nine’,” he recalled. Britain’s Joe and Jake limped home in 24th place out of 26 contenders with their You’re Not Alone offering. But at least they actually made the points’ table, unlike other British entries in even more painful times.
Real Madrid fans are gunned down in cafe REAL Madrid footballers paid tribute to the 16 fans, gunned down by three ISIS militants, by wearing black armbands during their final, league-deciding match at Deportivo La Coruna. The fearful, cowardly attack was carried out in a café popular with youngsters in Balad, Irak, a city with a mostly-Shiite population. It was also the head-
quarters of a Real Madrid fan club. The so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility and at least 12 of the victims died in the attack - and another four in a nearby market after one terrorist fled the scene and detonated an explosive belt. The gunmen managed to get past three police checkpoints before arriving at their target,
according to sources. And the security forces were later deployed in the area through fears of new attacks. Meanwhile, the Madrid club failed to complete their homage to the dead by winning La Liga, despite beating La Coruna 2-0. Bitter rivals Barcelona also won to pip them by a point for the Spanish title.

Casablanca Madeleine completes the final toll THE last surviving cast member of Humphrey Bogart’s legendary, Oscar-winning 1942 Casablanca film, has died in Spain at the age of 92.
Madeleine Lebeau, whose tear-stained face, framed in closeup while La Marseillaise played, became a defining image of Resistance movement during World War II at the age of 19. Her step-son, filmmaker Carlo Alberto Pinelli, revealed that she passed away on 1st May from complications following a broken thigh bone. Madeleine, who played Yvonne, was the perfect actress to play the scorned lover of Bogart’s Rick Blaine. She was able to draw on her own experience of fleeing the Nazis when she was cast, along with husband Marcel Dalio, in the Oscar-winning film. Dalio played casino croupier Emil. When ditched by the world-weary nightclub owner, Yvonne becomes involved with one of the Nazi soldiers occupying Morocco. But once she hears the rousing chorus of La Marseillaise sung
by defiant drinkers in the nightclub bar, she repents her dalliance with the enemy and joins in their song. Madeleine, born near Paris in 1923, fled France with her husband, just days before the Nazis swept into Paris in 1940. The couple feared for their lives after Dalio’s image was used on a Nazi propaganda poster as an example of how to spot Jewishlooking features. They made their way to California and, thanks in part to Dalio’s Hollywood connections, Madeleine was signed up to the Warner Brothers studio. She landed parts in the 1941 film Hold Back the Dawn and Gentleman Jim in 1942. That same year the pair were cast in Casablanca, but, sadly, her marriage to Dalio crumbled during the making of the film in 1942. He divorced her for “desertion” and Warners ended her contract soon after. Despite not having a major studio behind her, Madeleine won roles in two more Hollywood films: Paris After Dark (1943) and Music for Millions (1944). And when the war was over, she returned to Europe and, eventually, went to star in Fellini’s 8½ in 1963.

Farewell to Prince, and there’s more to follow! HUNDREDS of friends and wellwishers, who remembered the late pop icon Prince at a private ceremony at his church near Minneapolis, included members of his 3rdEyeGirl band and his protégée, Sheila E.
Sunday’s mourners, dressed in black, could be seen entering the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness temple in the suburb of Minnetonka, Minnesota. The service was closed to media, but local TV station KARE quoted the printed programme as saying that the star “found great joy and satisfaction in sharing the things he learned from the Bible with others”. Prince, baptised as a
Jehovah’s Witness in 2003, was reported to have even knocked on doors in his home-town to distribute religious literature. The dynamic singer and guitar-player, known for his on-stage vigour and healthy diet, died suddenly on 21st April at his Paisley Park estate in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen. His family gathered
there two days later when his body was cremated, according to the singer’s representatives. But his sister, Tyka Nelson, said she did not consider that “intimate gathering” to have been his funeral and that the family were still planning a public event. “The proposed plan is to have our Memorial/Funeral/Tribute in August,” she wrote on
Facebook, adding that Prince’s remains would be present at the forthcoming event. “Prince and his music influenced so many people that we feel inspired to celebrate his life and legacy in just the right way,” she wrote. Investigators have not released a cause of death for Prince, but doctors were treating him for a dependence on pain-killers.
Rio Mayor dismisses spreading Zika threat THE Mayor of Rio has no intention of allowing the 2016 Olympic Games to be cancelled, or even postponed, because the Zika virus is spreading throughout Brazil. But the fervent desire of Eduardo Paes to see the world’s leading athletes congregating in his city goes against the wishes of a leading Canadian publichealth professor. Last week, Professor Amir Attaran wrote in the Harvard Public Health Review that going ahead with the Games risked “a foreseeable global catastrophe”, and that it would irresponsible to go ahead with the Games with the virus so prevalent in Brazil. And Dr Cydia Alves Pereira Souza, an expert in infectious diseases in Rio, told Sky News that there was a risk associated with the Olympics. “I think it is dangerous for the tourists coming and the athletes and
everybody.” she warned. “The Olympic Park is in the west area of the city, where we have the hugest number of mosquitoes.” Despite the knowledge that Zika has spread around the globe and has been declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO), with concerns that infection among pregnant women can lead to birth defects. But Rio Mayor Paes insisted: “There are not many cases of the Zika virus, especially in the city of Rio. “There is the issue with pregnant women, and this is something we need to take care of. But I don’t know anyone who’s got the Zika virus, and I know a lot of people, so this is not a big issue. “Dengue fever, which we have in the summertime every year, is much worse than the Zika virus, and nobody talks about Dengue fever.”
He added: “It is weird for us when we listen to the news outside. Sometimes, I think people think it’s like Ebola. “But you’ve got to come and enjoy. It is the time of the year when it’s our winter - it is never cold, and I know the British will love Rio, as they did in the World Cup. “It is an amazing city, an amazing place. People are completely safe here.” The International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruled out any changes to the schedule, saying it was working with the WHO to ensure the safety of the Games. Michele Camargo Moraes and her husband, Fabiano, live a few miles from the Olympic Park, and they are in constant fear of Zika. Since she found out she was pregnant in January, she has barely left the couple’s flat. She gave up her job as a lawyer and ended up with a rash from us-
ing so much insect repellent. She told Sky News: “Everywhere, there are people with Zika. In my building here, at my work, my family has it, and we know several people who’ve had Zika. It is impossible the mayor doesn’t know anyone who has had Zika.” And Michele defends the steps she is taking, saying: “I am going to look after my child. I prefer to take all the precautions I can. If I do end up with a child with problems, at least I can say I did everything I could.” But Rio’s Mayor believes worries about the Games are the same as in previous host cities. “I remember when I got into London two or three days before the Games, the newspapers were saying it was going to be chaos, terrible, everything is going to go wrong,” he said. “Things will all go well and the Zika virus is not going to be a big issue.”

Mightiest cruise ship faces its first big test
IT has been labelled “Europe’s biggest hotel”, and the world’s largest cruise ship, now docked in Southampton, is being prepared for Sunday’s maiden voyage with passengers, to Rotterdam. The 227,000-ton Harmony of the Seas, which
cost £700m, can carry 6,780 passengers and 2,100 crew members. It has been compared with a floating city and features 2,747 staterooms, 20 restaurants, 23 swimming pools - and even a park, complete with more than 10,000 plants and 50 trees.
The monster cruiser also boasts what it describes as seven neighbourhoods, which include a cinema, promenade, sports and youth zones, an entertainment palace and spa and fitness centre. At 362 metres (1,188ft) long, the 16-deck ship
is bigger than the Eiffel Tower and, spanning 65m (215ft), is the widest cruise ship ever built. The US-based Royal Caribbean Cruises took possession of the liner earlier this month during a ceremony at the French STX shipyard, in Saint-Naz-
aire, where it was built. Tens of thousands of well-wishers waved it goodbye as it set sail for England, and one onlooker said: “It’s gone. We watched it develop and grow over three years, and it’s like a child leaving home.” Gavin Smith, Senior
Vice-President of Royal Caribbean, told Sky News: “The amazing port here in Southampton has made us very welcome. “And Sunday will be a beautiful day for what is going to be one of the greatest days in the company’s history.”
Trump is at loggerheads with Cameron and Khan B R I TA I N ’ S Prime Minister, David Cameron, still believes Donald Trump’s plan to invoke a temporarily ban on Muslims from entering the US is “divisive, stupid and wrong”.
His spokesman has issued a statement to that effect, which the Republican presidential hopeful said the comments - made in the aftermath of the proposal being suggested last year - could harm relations between the pair. Trump told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “It looks like we are not going to have a very good relationship. Who
knows? I hope to have a good relationship with him, but he’s not willing to address the problem either.” When asked whether Cameron was concerned about Trump’s suggestion, a Downing Street spokesman said: “The Prime Minister has made his views on Donald Trump’s comments very clear. He disagrees with them, and I haven’t got anything further to add. “He continues to believe that preventing Muslims from entering the US is divisive, stupid and wrong.” Yet the spokesman added that the PM was “committed to maintaining the special relationship”. whoever wins November’s presidential election, saying: “He has been clear that he
will work with whoever is President of the United States.” The Republican presidential hopeful also used the interview to criticise newly-elected London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who said on taking office earlier this
month that Trump’s views on Islam were “ignorant”, and risked harming security on both sides of the Atlantic. But Trump said: “He doesn’t know me, hasn’t met me, doesn’t know what I’m all about. I
think they were very rude statements and, frankly, tell him I will remember those statements. They are very nasty statements.” The American multibillionaire businessman added: “When he won, I wished him well. Now, I don’t care about him. Let’s see how he does; let’s see if he’s a good mayor.” Trump, preparing to battle for the White House position against Democrat Hillary Clinton, said he was offended by Khan’s remarks, but denied he was “at war with him.” “I just think it’s very rude of him,” he added. “He’s a Muslim, and I think it’s ignorant for him to say that.” Trump appeared to alter his call for a temporary ban on Muslims to
the US after Mr Khan was sworn in, saying there would be “exceptions”. He said the policies he suggested on the campaign trail were just “suggestions”, but he believes there is a “tremendous” problem with Islamic extremism. A spokesman for Khan, reacting to Trump’s interview, said: “Donald Trump’s views are ignorant, divisive and dangerous. It’s the politics of fear at its worst, and it will be rejected at the ballot box, just as it was in London. “Sadiq has spent his whole life fighting extremism, but Trump’s remarks make that fight much harder for us all. It plays straight into the extremists’ hands, and makes both our countries less safe.”

Exchange rate volatility
By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct
LAST Wednesday (11th May), the British Chamber of Commerce reported that 54% of its members would vote to stay in the EU.
This is lower than February’s survey, reflecting that the Referendum is going to be a lot closer than many originally thought. And it is expected that the June count will see extreme volatility in rates
with this uncertainty. The National Institute of Economic & Social research has said that if the UK leave the EU, “the pound could fall as much as 20%” in the immediate aftermath of the Referendum. And that “inflation would jump dramatically as sterling depreciates”. This would add more concern over the growth and health of the UK economy. British businesses continue to remain pessimistic about the economy, and most aren’t well prepared, in the event of Britain leaving the European Union. The Canary Islands are at the forefront of Spain’s booming property market. With ana-
lysts predicting substantial rate swings in the run-up to the Referendum, and as much as a five-to-10-cent shift in GBP-EUR alone, depending upon the outcome, many of our clients are taking advan-
tage of our limit-order service. This is where a rate of exchange is agreed between us and the client - and when we can achieve the desired rate, we automatically purchase the currency
on their behalf. As rate spikes can sometimes occur out of business hours, or if they should spike for a few seconds, this service leaves you safe in the knowledge that you haven’t missed it. With Brexit/Bremain being the hot topic over the last weeks thoughts of Grexit have faded into the background - only to rear their head again. Following talks in Brussels, Greece are awaiting their next bailout package eagerly. The additional reforms and austerity measures announced by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras last weekend, in the form of tax and pension reforms, were not well received. Even more
pressure could be put on the euro if discussions on the Greek debt fall through. However, if Greece can finalise its reforms by the end of 2018, it may qualify for some form of debt relief from the Eurogroup. Easy-going Spain! WHEN it comes to the economy, Spain is not in the same league as Germany or France, but it certainly comes up trumps on the rights of LGBT ( lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people. Spain is rated fifth-best country in Europe for accommodating them in a new report by Brusselsbased advocacy group ILGA-Europe. moving up one place from last year. In the Rainbow Europe report, it was up one place to fifth, behind Malta, Belgium, Britain and Denmark only, in its protections for, and rights granted to, the LGBT. Forty-nine countries were ranked, according to their laws pertaining to same-sex marriage, adoption, rights for transgender people, and more. Spain’s legacy, as one of the first European countries to grant equal marriage and adoption rights to same-sex couples in 2005, has made it a model for other countries still straggling behind, said Katrin Hugendubel, ILGA-Europe advocacy director. “With all the progress Spain has made in the past, there’s really no going back,” she said. “A lot of people are not aware how much other EU countries have been moving ahead on this,
and that Spain and Portugal have full adoption rights and medically-assisted insemination.” Last October, for example, a court ruled in favour of a lesbian couple who had been denied artificial insemination treatment by a hospital, stating that the doctors had infringed upon their “fundamental right not to be discriminated (against) for their sexual orientation”. If there is room for improvement in Spain, Hugendubel said it would be within the leading conservative party, the Popular Party (PP), whose leader and current acting Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, had tried to challenge Spain’s landmark 2005 legislation for gay rights. The Rainbow Europe report also highlights homophobic statements made by prominent politicians throughout last year, such as when the PP’s Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, said he would be “very upset” if he found out his son were gay, though he would still “be at his side”. But Hugendubel said: “There is hesitant leadership, pushed by high, social acceptance of LGBT rights.” There were also some eyebrows raised when Rajoy himself attended the wedding of a gay
friend and fellow PP member last year. In contrast to how politicians may express their feelings about LGBT people, though, the rest of the Spanish population has one of the highest tolerance levels in Europe: 90% say they “totally agree” that gay people should have the same rights as straight people, the report notes. Another area on which not just Spain, but the
rest of Europe, still needs to focus is the rights for transgender individuals, including further antidiscrimination protections and establishing healthcare protocol for them, according to the report. One of the major reasons that Malta came out on top in the latest analysis was because of its ground-breaking legislation for protections for intersex people -
those born with sex characteristics that do not fit into typical notions of female and male bodies. Last April, the country became the first to outlaw non-consensual, medical interventions for intersex people. “This is one issue that has been neglected for a long time,” said Hugendubel. “One of the messages from this report is that countries can learn a lot from each other.”
Countries performing the worst in the report were Monaco, Turkey, Armenia and Russia, with Azerbaijan at the very bottom. “You can’t move ahead on one thing and think the job is done,” said Hugendubel. “In the EU, there’s a feeling that lack of equality is happening only outside of Europe, so this is a reminder that we’re not all on the right side of history quite yet.”
Coke investment not to be sniffed at COCA-COLA Iberian Partners, which is the partner bottler of The Coca-Cola Company for Spain, Portugal and Andorra, this week welcomed Canarian Government President Fernando Clavijo. He visited its Tacoronte facilities in the North of Tenerife, and, afterwards, at a press conference, he announced that the company would be investing 11 million euros in the main islands. In a statement, Eugenio Molina, regional director of the Southern Area of Coca-Cola Iberian Partners (CCIP), expressed the company’s commitment to the Archipelago, where it already has a history of more than 60 years. Clavijo was accompanied by Adrian Mendoza, Deputy Minister
of Industry and Trade; José Téllez, CEO of Youth, and Tacoronte Mayor Alvaro Davila. The statement added that of the 11m euros, eight million will go to improvements and maintenance of the Tacoronte factory, and the remainder to Manantial de Aguas Toscal, in Ingenio, Gran Canaria. During the visit, President Clavijo highlighted the role of CocaCola Iberian Partners
(CCIP) as an engine of economic development in the region. “For the Canary Islands to have the presence of such a multi-national, which generates hundreds of jobs directly and indirectly in the municipalities where it operates, is a great satisfaction,” said Clavijo. “It reflects the commitment of the Canary Islands Government to promoting a society based on innovation and economic diversi-
fication in the Archipelago.” Coca-Cola began its Canarian activities February 1955, giving a major boost to its presence in the archipelago in 1962 with the opening of its Santa Cruz factory. Currently, Coca-Cola Iberian Partners in the Canary Islands has a staff of 260 professionals. It is also the source of about 300 stalls, in direct employment in activities such as cleaning, logistics, maintenance, etc. The Coca-Cola Iberian Partners’ facilities in Tacoronte, inaugurated in 1996, cover an area of five hectares (about five football pitches) and has become a reference in the archipelago for technological innovation and environmental conservation.

Barging Round Britain with John Sergeant ITV1, 20.00
In episode five, John is barging his way along the Oxford Canal, which meanders through the heart of the gentle English countryside until it reaches the River Thames in Oxford. John says: “I’m on the Oxford Canal, it was built more than 200-years ago to link with London. But then along came the Grand Union Canal which turned this into a bit of a backwater, and it’s only now that the Oxford Canal has regained its big time success. It’s very popular and very pretty.” John picks up the canal just south of Claydon, where a visit to an organic farm sees John rolling up his sleeves to go harvesting for organic pumpkins… where he discovers it’s not all about size. He then gets a crash course in beekeeping, before sampling some of the fresh honey. John says: “That’s terrific, it’s almost too good. I may have to lie down after that.”

FA Cup Final BBC1, 16:15
Gary Lineker presents live coverage of the FA Cup final between Crystal Palace and Manchester United at Wembley Stadium. The 2016 showpiece is a repeat of the 1990 final - a match in which current Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew was playing. A replay was needed to separate the sides on that occasion, with United eventually triumphing 1-0 after the original tie was drawn 3-3. While Pardew and Palace will be looking for their revenge, United also won’t be short of motivation. Manager Louis van Gaal has spent much of this season with question marks over his future at Old Trafford, while the Reds have not won a major title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Jutland: WWI’s Greatest Sea Battle Channel 4, 20:00
A Secret History documentary. The Battle of Jutland during World War I was the biggest and the deadliest clash between the British and German navies in the 20th century. Britain had more ships and superior firepower. The public expected a walkover. But the outcome of the battle shook the nation. Thousands of British sailors lost their lives in less than 24 hours. In the recriminations that followed, the truth was distorted. Signatures were forged. Documents were tampered with. The reputation of Admiral Jellicoe, who led the battle, was ruined. Now, as the centenary of Jutland approaches, his grandson Nick is determined to put that right. Jutland has been plagued by controversy for 100 years. Nick is joining a scientific expedition to unearth new evidence about Jutland.
Britain’s Got Talent ITV1, 20.00
This Saturday, in the final auditions of the series, the remaining hopefuls take to the Britain’s Got Talent stage to impress the judges, while the final 45 acts that are through to the live semi-finals are also revealed. The judges, Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams are joined by the nation’s favourite TV duo, Ant & Dec, who will be on hand to encourage, congratulate and commiserate the acts whilst guiding the audience through the auditions. Once the last acts have auditioned, the judges then face the hard task of whittling down this year’s crop of talented contestants to the lucky few who will perform in the live shows. With lots of talent seen so far, who will secure a coveted spot in the live shows, joining this year’s Golden Buzzer contestants who have already been guaranteed a place? Following much deliberation and discussion the nail-biting wait is then over as the acts are called back to see the judges and learn their fate. The lucky act who is crowned the winner in the live grand final will secure a life changing cash prize of £250,000 and the opportunity to perform at this year’s Royal Variety Performance.

Horizon BBC2, 21:30 Michael Mosley investigates the dramatic rise in e-cigarettes. They are everywhere these days, but what does the latest scientific research on them reveal? Michael reveals what e-cigarettes are really doing to your health. Are they really better for you than cigarettes? What is actually in them? Is passive vapour harmful? And can they really stop you from smoking? Michael meets some of the scientists around the world studying them, asks a group of volunteers to try to give up smoking regular cigarettes using them, and even takes up ‘vaping’ himself, smoking an e-cigarette every day for a month to see the effects on his own health - no easy task for such a committed non-smoker.

The Great British Sewing Bee
BBC2, 21:00
The Great British Sewing Bee returns for an eight-part series presented by Claudia Winkleman. Nine amateur sewers return hoping to show judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young that they can make beautiful clothes on a miniature scale. First, the sewers must carefully follow a pattern to make a babygrow from stretch cotton jersey but who will get the gusset and poppers in the right place and who will end up going off-piste? Next, the sewers must show they can handle slippery satin and chiffon, by totally transforming an adult bridesmaid dress into a wearable garment for a boy or a girl. For the final challenge, real children replace the mannequins as the sewers strive to create perfectly fitted woollen capes, knowing the judges will scrutinise every cut and stitch before deciding who deserves to stay and who must bid farewell to the Sewing Bee.

With Shelly keeping baby Sebastian with her on the ward overnight, an anxious Andrew and Nathan prepare to bring him home again. Andrew’s convinced something’s going to go wrong and that Shelly will change her mind, while Nathan struggles to keep him calm. But neither of them is prepared for the shock of what is waiting for them at the hospital. Maxine’s day is thrown into chaos when she gets a call from her husband Micky, saying he’s on his way home. As she rushes to get everything ready for his return, there’s something urgent pressing on her mind - and she turns to a torn Shelly for help. Things get increasingly complicated for Roanna as she and Ray continue to meet in secret. As their affair gets more serious, it’s only a matter of time before someone finds out. Meanwhile it’s the twins’ first birthday. Diane and Rick throw a party for all their friends, and Vicky struggles to cope after finding out she’s been suspended from work.
Old School With The Hairy Bikers BBC2, 21.00 The Hairy Bikers have only four weeks left at the Oxford Academy to prove that their social experiment pairing up teenagers with pensioners is working. Can they demonstrate that these blossoming friendships between junior and senior partners is transforming the health, minds and wellbeing of both groups? We catch up with Jacub who has ADHD, is still getting detentions and risks being thrown out of the Old School project unless he improves his behaviour. His partner Clive is on a mission to find out how Jacub’s gaming habit is affecting his learning at school. Wez is also in a tricky spot - he’s been withdrawn from his Maths GCSE exam for missing too many lessons, so his partner Dave steps in to see if he can help re-motivate him by joining Wez in class. Shy pupil Charisma has been helping senior partner Hanif learn English and giving him tips on how to send emails. Hanif reciprocates by helping Charisma with her driving lessons - and as a result Charisma’s confidence is growing by the day. The school organises a special event inviting potential sponsors, educational specialists and charities to hear from the junior and senior partners themselves about the project and their new friendships, hoping to generate funding to guarantee Old School has a future. Will the Bikers’ experiment see the school raise enough cash to continue long after the cameras stop rolling? And the results of the scientific testing are in: have the senior participants achieved improvements in mobility, strength and memory during the course of the project? And will there be improvements in the behaviour and confidence of the Oxford Academy pupils? Time will tell as the GCSE results are revealed.

Later Live... with Jools Holland BBC2, 22:00
Music programme featuring sessions from contemporary and classic artists. The Last Shadow Puppets perform tracks from their chart-topping album Everything You’ve Come to Expect. Bonnie Raitt returns to the show to run through some of the songs from her recently released twentieth album Dig in Deep, which features a healthy dose of the signature slide work from the woman Rolling Stone named one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Malian kora player Ballake Sissoko and French cellist Vincent Segal have pulled two seemingly incompatible instruments together to great effect on their second album together. NAO makes her TV debut with her neo-soul, electro and R&B sound that has already seen her nominated for a MOBO award. Another act making their debut on the show are Dinosaur Jr. They earned themselves a reputation as one of the formative influences on US alt-rock in the 80s and early 90s. Completing the line-up is Zucchero, credited as the ‘father of the Italian blues’.

Documentary following ambitious young skater Lily Matthias. What that ambition means for her family is mum Lyndsey getting up at 4am, six days a week, to drive Lily to her training in Blackburn, and dad Wayne spending a fortune every month on lessons, ice time, costumes and competition fees. So strong is Lily’s commitment to her training that she’s dropped out of school to focus on it. Whether Lily can make it will be put to the test at the UK’s biggest competition of the year, the British Figure Skating Championships. Lily faces tough competition from two 12-year-olds - Scot Mia Gallagher who trains six days a week, morning and night, and Genevieve Sommerville, the No.1 skater for her age group, who is already competing in the advanced novice category. This film follows the girls’ preparation across autumn 2015 as they train towards the British championships and reveals why having an ice princess in the family comes at a price.

Boris v Dave: The Battle for Europe, Channel 4, 21:00
With less than a month to go before the European referendum, Michael Crick examines how the campaign has become a battle between Britain’s most high-profile politicians. Through revealing interviews with their friends, families and political allies and foes, Crick examines the history behind this very public duel and how it has come to a head over Europe. David Cameron and Boris Johnson have a shared past, first at Eton, then at Oxford as members of the elite Bullingdon Club, and now in the top echelons of the Conservative Party. The documentary explores the dynamic between the two men. Crick provides his insight into the backgrounds of the two big-hitters and explores the incidents that have shaped and formed their political views. This landmark programme provides a definitive look at the personal battle that will define both Britain’s future relationship with Europe and the leadership of the Tory Party and the country.

The Truth About Alcohol BBC1, 21:00 A&E doctor Javid Abdelmoneim is on a mission to find out the truth about alcohol. In January, the government released its new alcohol guidelines. For men, the recommended weekly limit was cut by a third to 14 units per week, equivalent to about seven pints of beer, bringing it in line with the amount recommended for women. So what is behind the change? This is just one question of many that Javid aims to answer as he explores the science of drinking and the new evidence for the health risks of alcohol. Why do some people get drunk quicker than others? What is behind red wine’s healthy reputation? Is a nightcap actually good for your sleep? Does lining your stomach work? And can alcohol actually make you eat more?

A day in the life... By Brad Chermside
A BIG bonus of entertaining for a living is meeting people and making new acquaintances before the show. And it’s not uncommon for an informal chin-wag to turn, i n a d v e r t e n t l y, into a chat-show sketch, when we’re quizzed by all and sundry.
“Do you actually live here?” They enquire, with raised eyebrows pointing to the floor. “How long have you been doing this?” What they’re really thinking is: “How long has he been getting away with this?” The other frequent question is: “What do you do all day?” And though I obviously can’t speak for all entertainers, here’s my militarystyle preparation for a two-gig bonanza. I’m up around 10am and, morning ritual out the way, I’ll write for two hours - a passion for which I hope to get paid one day. After that, I’ll complete any administrative tasks that might need doing - social media; emails; phone calls, and maybe some posters need printing and, or, dropping off. Then mid-afternoon, it’s a work-out to get that endorphins’ fix, of which I still feel the benefits (placebo or not) when I take to the stage hours later.
Training completed, I’m normally ravenous, so I’ll feed my face to power me up for the evening’s exertions. The last re-charge of the day comes with a siesta, before springing out of bed and shaking myself awake with a shower and a strong cup of coffee. The more rock ‘n’ roll souls might choose something harder to get in the mood, but a caffeine injection does it for me. Shirts ironed; microphone batteries charged; lunch-box full of fruit, nuts, and berries; van loaded … it’s time to earn a crust. Normally, I’ll appear at a hotel first, with a bar to follow. This can mean two changes of clothes. More formal apparel is imperative in hotels, where the Spanish directors will listen and judge with their eyes. The obligatory soundcheck done, I’ll proceed to scan the audience for different nationalities and age-groups, and also keep an eye out
for guests who might be prime candidates to involve in the show. Always read the audience before the script, as the old adage goes. When show-time comes, it’s one last equipment check, before there’s no going back and it’s time to
cross the line. When the fat lady has sung at the hotel, it’s a race against time. Bestcase scenario, you’ve got half-an-hour to pack up equipment, change your shirt for a fresher, lesssweaty one and jump into the van, Duke’s of Hazard-style.
At worst, you’ve got 15 measly minutes, and you arrive at your last venue with seconds to spare and forget to leave the handbrake on, as Tony Kay once did (sorry Tony, couldn’t resist!). Your voice is warm and you’ve got an en-
core under your belt already. You’ve left the hotel a hero, but at the bar you’re back to zero. There’s another demanding, maybe rowdier, more-inebriated bunch baying for your blood. Instead of Terry and June playing cards and eating five-star peanuts, you’ve got Chardonnay and Tyrone, who’ve just got engaged in Las Veronicas and are game for a laugh. When the curtain falls on another (hopefully) successful performance, there’s no time for a lap of honour. You’ve got to get to bed as soon as possible, and prepare to do it all again the next day. It may be argued that two hours in the spotlight is very little, but a dedicated professional prepares all day and pours more passion, energy and spirit into that time than many who’ve never done it would ever know.
It’s Carry On - again! THE first Carry On film for 24 years is set for the big screen, and fans of the iconic comedy series will be waiting with bated breath.
Carry On Doctors is being written by Tim Dawson and Susan Nickson, who wrote the TV show Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps. Nickson said: “I’m thrilled to be involved in, perhaps, the biggest comedy franchise in Britain. I grew up watching these films, and to be working on this project feels like coming home. “They’re peculiarly British, but the appeal of the humour, and the ever-present message that good people always win, is absolutely global.” Barbara Windsor, who’s now a Dame, plus Sid James and Kenneth Williams, were among the stars of the original, saucy films, which started with Carry On Sergeant in 1958.
But Dame Barbara, now in the throes of “dying” in EastEnders after re-inventing herself in the BBC soap for years, will not be appearing. The cast for the new film has not been revealed, but Carry On historian Robert Ross, also an adviser on the new film, said it would be “crammed full of beloved comedy actors”. The release date for Carry On Doctors is not known, either, but the second instalment has already been entitled Carry On Campus.
Ross said: “The saucy world of bedpans and thermometers has been an integral part of the Carry Ons for well over 50 years. “Now, as the series carries on into the 21st century, Carry On Doctors returns to hospital with a cast crammed full of beloved comedy actors - and a hilarious script that will have you in stitches!” He added. “With a kiss to the past and a firm finger on the pulse, it’s time to Carry On. Again.” Executive producer Brian Baker said of
the late Peter Rogers, his close friend and producer of the original Carry On series: “I’m very excited for the project to go into production, and to honour Peter’s legacy. “Peter, who died seven years ago at 95, was a cornerstone of the British film industry for many years, and it is a privilege to continue the Carry On tradition.” The last Carry On film released was Carry On Columbus in 1992, starring Jim Dale, Leslie Phillips, June Whitfield and Rik Mayall.

Bob, bob, bobbing along
By Vanessa Vee FIRST there was snorkelling, then there was scubadiving … and now there’s the revolutionary BOB diving! But, as I have mentioned numerous times, I’m a big scaredycat when it comes to the sea.
I have a permanent fear that Jaws is going to get me. Years ago, I tried snorkelling at Las Galletas. Wow, that was about 18 years ago, but I have never had the urge to try my hand at scuba-diving. I was once willing to have a try-dive in a swimming pool, but when my friend with me found out that I was asthmatic, she refused. But Safari BOB diving, based in Puerto Colon, has always tickled my
fancy, and, at last, I decided to give it a go. The BOB (Breathing Observation Bubble) was invented by a British car designer, and you must cast aside any worries you may have about the apparatus being heavy, unwieldy or hard to operate. There is a reason why James Bond makes inventions like this look so easy to operate, and
that’s because they are. This is a unique diving opportunity, a way of discovering the underwater world, and no previous diving experience is necessary. Maximum security is guaranteed, and you are under the control and guidance of specialised instructors at all times. After the briefing, and once we were all kitted out, it was just a case
of dipping underwater, briefly, in order to resurface to get my head inside the bubble and find a comfortable seating position. That was it - we were off on a total adventure, looking at the fabulous underwater world through a personal window. You have the advantage of having no breathing apparatus to
consider, or which obscures your view. Virtually all ages can have a go, but the restrictions are that you require good health, must be under the age of 74, and a minimum 1.40m tall, which is about 5ft. You can even partake if you wear glasses or contact lenses, but pregnant ladies, unfortunately, are not permitted!
We drove our scooters around the Spaghetti Bay area and saw a vast array of sea life, including a sea, as well as many schools of fish. The deepest we can venture is five metres, and the air supply is continual, so there’s never any need for panic! The BOBs venture out just three times a day, in small groups, so that everyone receives continual service and attention. Even qualified scuba divers will still enjoy the opportunity. Prices are 55 euros per driver. But if you have a spouse or friend who wishes to come along on the transfer boat as a spectator, he/she can do so for just 32 euros. To book your experience, call the Tenerife Sunshine team on 922 751 867, email info@ tenerifesunshine.com or visit www.tenerifesunshine.com and book online from the comfort of your own home. There are over 250 different Tenerife experiences available on the Tenerife Sunshine website.

REVIEW: Bobby’s II Indian restaurant, Costa del Silencio
A real Bobby-dazzler… I’M always up for a recommendation from a friend, and that’s why I ended up in Bobby’s II Indian restaurant in Costa del Silencio last weekend.
Most Indian restaurants seem to be the same, but I had a feeling Bobby’s would be different … and this was confirmed when I was welcomed by manager Bobby! It takes a bit of confidence to put your own name in big lights. But for me, it shows that the person is confident in his product. Little details… Bobby guided me and the wife to our table and made us feel very much at ease immediately. The menu had all the favourites you would expect. Curries are very personal and everyone has his own flavour, be it Masala, Balti, Jalfrezi, Rogan Josh, and so on. But there are also some hidden gems in his menu which I had not come across before in an Indian restaurant, and Bobby was only to willing to explain, in great detail, what was in the recipe and how it was cooked. He also told us with great pride that all three Bobby’s restaurants on the Island mix and grind their spices so there is consistency between them. He also said they grow as many of their vegetables and chillies at Bobby’s finca, so they
can be cooked as fresh as possible. How do you start an Indian meal? Yes, popadoms with four dips: mango, mint, chilli and garlic. Then came surprise No.1 - the Aloo Tikki. This is a fritter with potatoes, onions and spices. It was the first time I had eaten this dish, which is crispy on the outside, with a superb, smooth texture on the
inside (I know, it sounds like the classic Dime bar advert from the early Nineties). And with the mango dip, it was a match made in heaven. For the main course, my wife went for her favourite dish, chicken korma (I know) which I did try. It was spot-on, and a good test for this dish is the lightness of the sauce. As I was feeling adventurous, I asked for a recommendation. I can eat anything hot, which isn’t really the point of a good curry. Flavour over heat is the feat. Bobby suggested one of the chef ’s specials, which was a Lamb Methi Gosht. This is a beautifully-flavoured curry with big chunks of lean lamb, dried and fresh fenugreek with tomatoes. Along with the coconut-stuffed Peshwari Naan bread, it was a fine selection. And to top off, it was served with a crispy base and fresh,
vegetable, basmati rice with peas, carrots and spices. I do love a mixed rice, and this is a dish you must try. Believe me, you’ll be back for more! Afterwards, I spoke with Bobby, who told me that Bobby’s started just six years ago with the original restaurant in Puerto Santiago. Bobby’s II opened in Silencio two years ago, and their third restaurant, surprise, surprise - Bobbys III - opened in Pueblo Canaria three months ago. If you’d like to watch the sunset go down, enjoy a great great meal with excellent service I highly recommend Bobby’s II in Costa del Silencio. And if you want a quiet night in with splendid food, try Bobby’s new take-away or delivery service. Call 648 498 444 for your deliveries and bookings, for any of their three fabulous restaurants.

Exercise is the key to maintain health
KEEP MY LENGTH amount and brush it
By Carl Pattison LONG, luscious hair can turn into a knotted nightmare if it’s not looked after. But it still needs cutting, like its shorter counterparts. Trimming is a must, if you want to prevent frayed ends and break-
age, and always use a flexible paddle-brush. This will ensure that you’re not tugging at those longer strands, and ripping out your hair. This must always done before you wash your hair to remove any knots, so you don’t create more during shampooing. When washing longer hair, massage the scalp only so that you don’t create more tangles. When conditioning, apply a generous
through. Don’t use a comb, or this will rip the fragile, wet hair. Once it has been brushed through, rinse well, wrap in a towel and squeeze. Never rub, because this will break the hair, causing knotting. Brush the hair from the ends upwards. Don’t drag from the scalp to the ends, as this will make it easier to remove tangles. If you’re going to blow-dry your hair, use a lower heat and heat defence because longer hair can be many years old. You need to take extra care so as not to damage it, repeatedly. Keep colouring to a minimum, and try to stay away from bleaching. Longer hair needs extra care if you’re going to keep it in pristine condition. Abusing it will only result in cutting off more of your precious hair.
URBAN HIPSTERS By Carl Pattison IF your guy is into having his own sense of style, then one which can be adapted to suit most tastes is the Hipster look. Born in the US, it is now seen all over the globe, and it isn’t about a set colour scheme or defined image. Hipsters come in all shapes and sizes, and can be adapted to a guy’s own taste. Pulling off the look couldn’t be easier. Try to go for olderlooking, worn-over-again clothes, and nothing too pristine - even if you want a smarter look. Be prepared to clash things together, and don’t be afraid to mixand-match your wardrobe. Key pieces are
university-style, preppy jackets and shirts, mixed in with checks and stripes. Waistcoats and bowties blend with formal shirts, yet trousers are scruffy jeans that are worn and frayed. Accessories are a must, from satchel-style bags to fake glasses. The limits are endless. This look can be casual to more formal - and anything in between.
Don’t be stuck for choice. There are shops full of pieces, to help you create it for yourself. Shoe-wise, anything from a casual trainer to a chunky brogue will do - whatever suits your character and style. Being a hipster isn’t to everyone’s taste, but taking just small pieces from this look will certainly change your wardrobe - for the better.
By Val Sainsbury WE all know that eating healthily is very important when it comes to being well, but it isn’t enough to keep most illnesses at bay.
If ever there were a “magic bullet” to combat the global pandemic of cardiovascular disease and obesity, then regular exercise would fit the bill. Experts have revealed US statistics, regarding regular, physical activity … and they don’t make for good reading. Only about 20% of Americans (23% men and 18% women) get enough exercise, and about 64% never do any at all. Europe doesn’t fare much better, with only 33% engaging in the recommended levels of exercise, while 42% ignore it completely. Professors from the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, at Florida Atlantic University, discussed the findings of a study. Prof Charles Hennekens, co-author, said: “If regular, physical activity were a pill, then perhaps more people would take it.” Weight gain, as well as being overweight - or obese - in middle age, increases a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attacks and strokes. The risk is also greater for Type-2 diabetes, os-
teo-arthritis and some common - and fatal cancers, such as bowel cancer. The authors also point out that exercise confers important, beneficial effects, beyond body weight. These include moresatisfactory readings of blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides (a type of fat found in the blood). Keeping active regularly can improve - and prevent - conditions such as diabetes, heartattacks, strokes and colon cancers, and, possibly, breast and prostate cancers. Arthritis, mood, energy, sleep - and even sex lives - are included in this list. So why don’t people exercise more? The authors suggest that, perhaps, the time and effort needed for regular physical activity, coupled with the limited accurate knowledge about its immediate and long-term benefits, may contribute to largely-sedentary lifestyles. The survey shows that 42% of Europeans offer this as the main reason for their sedentary lifestyles. “There are a lot of misperceptions about the role of regular physical activity, caloric intake and calories burned during exercise,” said Dr Steven Lewis, co-author and a professor at FAU’s College of Medicine.
“And, as a result, calorie-restriction dieting has been recommended as more practical for weight control than regular physical activity, which is a big problem.” Brisk walking for just 20 minutes a day burns about 700 calories a week, and results in a 30-40% reduced risk of coronary heart disease. It can be performed by most people, even by the elderly. The authors stress that regular, physical activity should include resistance-exercise such as lifting light weights, which can be safely performed by all age groups, including those with heart failure. Prof Lewis added: “The general health benefits of resistancetraining for middleaged and older adults are many. These include the prevention, or limitation, of age-related sarcopenia, (the loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength as a result of ageing), improved maintenance of muscle-mass strength, and a decreased risk of osteoporosis -related bone fractures, falls, physical disability, and mortality.” Lack of physical activity accounts for 22% of coronary heart disease, 22% of colon cancer, 18% of osteoporotic fractures, 12% of diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure), and 5% of breast cancer.

By Miruna Voicu THE climate is definitely one of the main factors to consider when you are decorating your holiday home, particularly as there will be completely different factors to take into account.
And it is possible to cool down your house, visually, without turning on the fans or air-conditioning. Sunlight from the windows produces a lot of heat and will fade your interiors. Use shutters, blinds or sun-curtains to control the entry of light and heat. Verticals are great for permitting light into a room, while directing it away from particular areas, such as seating or TV screens. The colour palette can
43 CW
The use of colour in warm climates also have a cooling effect on your rooms. If your room is already shaded, either by landscape or shutters, use a brighter tone such as sea-green. Rooms with exterior facing walls pull heat from the outside and release it inside. Using white, with some blue undertones, helps to cool down these spaces. Light versus dark Different colours reflect or absorb different amounts of light. A dark surface absorbs almost
all the light that strikes, while a light surface absorbs almost none *Use cool colours as they tend to calm and comfort. Choose the cool blues, greens, and violets over the warm reds and yellows *Go with pastels as they provide an open feeling, especially helpful in summers. Use pastel tints of the hues you want to decorate with by blending them with white or grey. *Provide illusion of space - dark and light
colours have opposite effects on a room’s feeling of spaciousness. In large rooms with high ceilings, use dark colours to make it more proportionate. And in small rooms, use light colours to make it more expansive and airy *Know your neutrals since they can make rooms appear larger, but even neutrals have warm or cool undertones. Warm undertones are pinkish or yellow-toned, while cool undertones are blue or violet *Be creative. Light colours are generally more cooling than dark ones, but using all light colours can be boring. Many houses here are open-plan. This is not just a design decision but is intended to promote airflow through the property. Think of colonial mansions, with large rooms running into each other and fans moving lazily to distribute the air.
Your property may not be as big, but the principle is the same. However, this can present some design problems, as an open-plan scheme throughout the house means your design for each room must blend with the others. If you have a room that doesn’t have much natural light, you can use shimmering tones to brighten the interior without adding heat. Sea-green or oceanblue are cooling colours, which add sheen to walls and a sense of smooth texture to fabrics. These colours attract light without bouncing it around the room, creating a more open, lighter feel in a shaded space. If you have a room with a lot of sunlight, then pastel, creamy-yellow walls and sandy, coralpinks convey a sense of cool in a bright room, and tone down the flood of natural sunlight.
However, too many pastel details may not stand out. Use splashes of stronger colour such as dark-green, red and sunny-yellow, with accessories such as artwork, pottery and cushions. Sometimes in public spaces or larger properties, there are big rooms and open spaces to encourage cross-ventilation. The colour scheme should not be too busy. An interior design with more than three distinct colours is considered energetic and inspires a sense of heat. Use neutral tones, or different tones of the same colour to promote a sense of peace and harmony. For example, you could use a background of alabaster walls with beige fabrics to cool the room and temper the light, and then use rich browns and gold accents to add warmth and luxury without heat.

Cats Welfare news
Our low-life cat-burglar WE have been stunned to discover that someone has stolen the chair we leave outside our charity shop for people to rest their legs while their partners are browsing inside. The man was seen taking it by customers, who were sifting through the rails of clothes outside. He has dark hair, just starting to go grey, and a moustache. He was small - about 5ft 2in and of slim build - late 40s, early 50s. Please let us know if he sounds familiar. A few weeks ago, a box of golf balls was also stolen. We are saddened that people feel it is acceptable to steal at all, let alone from a charity shop doing its best to raise funds to help the animals. Shame on that person! May microchip deal We still have our exclusive offer of a microchip for your cat or dog for just 20 euros. So many
cats go missing every year, and Cats Welfare recommend your cat has a safety collar and tag with phone number on. And also a microchip in case the collar is lost. Please have your pet micro-chipped to give it the best possible chance of safe return. For this month only, all cats and dogs can be micro-chipped for 20 euros at any of our three vets (Gran Sur, Los Cristianos or Las Chafiras). It’s easy, safe and shows you love your pet. And remember, the law demands that all dogs must be micro-chipped. You must contact us for a promotion code prior to going to the vet. ring or whatsapp Theresa on 680 475 500 (9am-6pm, 7 days a week). Golden Silverpoint Sincere thanks to Mandy Glachan and all the telemarketing team at Silverpoint, in Los Cristianos. They had a “Dress-Down Day”, eve-
ryone made a donation and they raised a whopping 500 euros, split between Cats Welfare and Live Arico. Thanks so much - you are all brilliant and we really appreciate your efforts to help the animals. Adopt a pet If you are thinking of adopting a cat or kitten, our current availability can be seen on our website www.cats-welfaretenerife.com/pets - we always have cats looking for homes, and kittens as well right now. All adults are vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. All new adoptions go on a two-week trial so you can be sure you have made the right decision before committing. If you don’t see what you are looking for on our website, ring or whatsapp Theresa because we have new arrivals daily, and you can be added to our waiting list.
Lions serve up another holiday treat for kids SAN Miguel Lions Club members have just finished their annual holiday for Disadvantaged Children in England, which is always the highlight of their year, and that of the youngsters! This year’s treat went to a group from Crawley, sent by their Lions; another from Chelmsford, via the local Lions, and a third group from Chorley, sponsored by various people in that area. Secretary Ralph Solomon said: “As a Club, we try to give the children a holiday of a lifetime, with full-board accommodation and various excursions for them and their magnif-
icent carers. “This May saw us at Aqua Park, the Monkey Park and Loro Parque and we thank these three huge attractions for their generosity. The rest of the time, the youngsters had all facilities available at the hotel, with nightly entertainment. “So, on behalf of our hard-working club members, I would like to thank everyone involved in our fund-raisers because you help make all these incredible events possible. “Funds are also raised by our Charity Shop in The Dip, Costa del Silencio, so please pop in and have a wander around if you’re in the
area. “While on the subject of the shop, I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who steal items left for us outside our
shop. You must be so proud of yourselves. If you really are that hard-up, you only have to ask because that’s what we are here for!
“We have the opportunity for those in need to obtain free clothes from our charity shop, via the social services, or through our local Catholic priest, who covers Las Galletas through to Guargacho. “We always have other projects on the go, such as supplying 500-euros of items on a quarterly basis to the priest in Las Galletas for his food bank to help feed the poor. “And during President Jackie’s year in office, we supported many projects, including donating to Guide Dogs for the Blind.” The new Lions’ term starts in July, when a
new President takes the helm, and this year it will be CL Susan. More details to follow. The San Miguel Lions’ annual President’s Night will be on Saturday 2nd July, and all are welcome. More information will be published here later, and also at the Charity Shop. If you are interested in our activities, you can find the group on its Facebook Page “Lions Club San Miguel De Abona”. If you’d like to join or even lend a helping hand, contact the Facebook page or call in at the shop, where a Lion will give you more information.

Brexit or Bremain? THERE are so many “what if” questions being asked as we approach the 23rd June Referendum vote in the UK and, it would seem, few answers. Politically, the debate seems to be focused almost entirely in the UK, - but what about the millions of ex-pats who live abroad? Are their rights and concerns being taken into consideration? Almost 300,000 of them are living in Spain, and over 7,000 in Adeje alone. Adeje International Focus group has requested that its local Council collaborates in hosting an information evening and it has been given its wish. The Brexit-Bremain

debate takes place on Tuesday (24th May) in Adeje Cultural Centre auditorium, between 5-7pm. Experts there to answer questions will be Paul Montague, from Blevins Franks, and lawyer José Escobedo, who expect to be dealing with issues ranging from health-care to the right to work and live in Spain if citizens vote to leave the EU. Have you a valid question you want answered? Are you seeking a particular piece of information that will help you make up your mind? Please come along to Adeje Cultural Centre, and email your questions in advance to englishtime@adeje.es.
MORE than 150 swimmers completed Saturday’s fourth annual Costa Adeje Bay distance challenges, over 1,300m and 7,500m, organised by Adeje Council’s sports department, in conjunction with Anima2 participants.
These included entrants from Dublin’s Phoenix Masters Swim Club, alongside other Tenerife-based internationals. All involved were delighted with the set-up
and post-swim atmosphere, and those from abroad are keen to return in 2017, encouraging more overseas swimmers to join them. And that remains a
distinct possibility because more and more competitors are taking up the challenge each year. The shorter race left Playa del Duque at
11am, with winner Rodrigo González crossing the finishing line in Playa Fañabe in 14mins, 42secs followed closely by Eduardo Marrero and Carlos Alberto Pérez. The first woman across the line was Andrea Montenegro (15min 25sec) with Dácil Hernández and Valeria Méndez second and third. The long-distance swimmers left from Playa de Ajabo, in Callao Salvaje, at 9am, with Britain’s James Secoy triumphant in 1hr 22min 40sec, followed by José Carlos Báez and Betuel González. Maria del Mar Sierra won the women’s event.
Charity walk for kind girls’ troupe THE fund-raising 1st Los Cristianos Rainbows, Brownies and Guides are at it again, collecting money to help the victims of last month’s Los Cristianos building disaster.
Following their cakemaking and food-wrapping exploits in Iceland, they decided on a sponsored walk this time. And so, last Sunday, they all got together, with some parents, siblings and two dogs, and walked the 5km from Iceland, in Los Cristianos, to the Mediterranean Palace hotel and back, stopping
along the way to sing songs and raise awareness. They all enjoyed themselves thoroughly and were each treated to an ice-cream at the finish!
The total raised on the day, from the smallchange tins alone, was 133.99 euros, and they are still awaiting the grand sum raised from sponsorship.
Thank you to everyone involved. Hopefully, a large sum will have been collected to help this worthy cause by the time all the money comes in.

Teenager Max breaks F1 Grand Prix record DUTCH teenager Max Verstappen is Formula One’s youngest winner of all time, having obliterated the record in Sunday’s astonishing Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
At 18 years and 232 days, the Red Bull driver was over 2½ years younger than previous record-holder Sebastian Vettel, with whom the youngster shared the podium, and who is not far off being a decade older than his new rival. And as the FIA have banned drivers under the age of 18 competing in Formula One, it will take an even younger teenager to beat his record. Verstappen also became the youngest driver to lead a lap (beating Vettel’s record from the 2007 Japanese Grand Prix), as well as being the first Dutch F1 winner and race leader. He held off the experienced Kimi Raikkonen
for an incredible 18 laps to win by 0.616secs, and Vettel shared the podium with his Ferrari team-mate in third place. Verstappen said: “I was targeting a podium, but to win straight away is an amazing feeling.” His proud father, Jos, twice on the podium with Benetton as Michael Schumacher’s team-mate in 1994, also raced against Raikkonen later in his career. “It’s the best day of my life,” said the winner’s dad. “This is really something unbelievably special,” while others acclaimed an exceptional talent, and a sure-fire F1 champion in the making. Red Bull took the Dutch teenager on board in 2015 and promptly assigned him to their junior team, Toro Rosso, where his rare maturity, feisty attitude and gung-ho approach to overtaking earning him universal acclaim. He also picked up a record three FIA awards: Rookie of the Year, Personality of the Year and
Action of the Year. Then, just four races into the 2016 season, his bosses suddenly promoted him to Red Bull Racing, swapping seats with Daniil Kvyat. What happened next stunned the motorracing world, even overshadowing a disastrous crash between Mercedes’ deadly rivals Lewis Hamilton, current world champion, and Germany’s Nico Rosberg, who leads this year’s drivers’ championship. The pair have dominated Formula One for two seasons and the rivalry is more than intense, as demonstrated on Sunday. They collided on turn four of the opening lap and finished up in the gravel. A seething Rosberg blamed his teammate for attempting a reckless overtaking manoeuvre after forcing his way ahead of Hamilton, who was on pole. Hamilton, for his part, said little, but did apologise to the whole team eventually. But no wonder Rosberg
was livid, having won the opening four races of the season and fancying his chances of a fifth success - and an eighth consecutive win after his grandstand finish last season. Hamilton could not afford to be behind, having trailed the runaway leader, and Rosberg saw no reason not to defend firmly. It was tantamount to sheer destruction, the first time both drivers have taken each other out of the race. Both stormed back to the debrief room,
with team boss Toto Wolff technical director Paddy Lowe not far behind. Niki Lauda, the team chairman, was visibly furious, saying: “It is stupid - we could’ve won this race. Lewis is too aggressive.” However, Wolff said: “Niki Lauda has the drivers’ opinion and instinct reaction and it is fair enough. From a team’s perspective, we have looked at all the pictures and looked at the data and it is not clear-cut. “Lewis tried to dive in,
Nico closed the door. Both of them were upset about the situation. They know what effort went into building the car, and there was no finger-pointing.” Race stewards would not attach blame to either driver, and left it at that! The two Mercedes drivers will surely be on their best behaviour when they renew the fight in the Monaco Grand Prix next Sunday. And Verstappen won’t be concerned if there’s an action-replay!
Ñandú still in win mode FOLLOWING their success in the Spanish Nationals, Ñandú returned to action against the El Medano Boatmen in the Tenerife leg of the Copa Canarias.
As normal in El Medano, conditions were hot and windy, with both teams fired up for the match. The home team started fast and hard, dominating the ruck and the breakdown, with El Medano’s back-row, Rob, having an immediate impact. But Ñandú, led by captain Jacob O, showed patience and, backed by their trademark defence, began to settle. Even so, the open-
El Medano Boatmen 0 Ñandú 48
ing quarter was noted for scrappy play, with spilled passes and knock-ons from both sides. The Boatmen were
enjoying early possession until,15 minutes into the match, Ñandú’s driving maul resulting in brilliant scrum-half Mateo P darting over,
the try converted by Gabri T. El Medano responded immediately, with No.8 Rob having some storming runs past
Ñandú’s gain line. But Ñandús defence held strong, allowing flanker Mel to drift past two defenders to score the visitors’ second try. Again, Gabri T added the conversion. He continued his excellent season, with a try of his own six minutes later, showing his pace to race over. Another try by Ñandú’s superb prop Gregor enabled Ñandú to lead 24-0 at halftime. Ñandú began to flow in the second half and, 10 minutes in, Ñandú’s No.8, Facu P, showed his class in open play, stepping through several players to cross for an excellent score. They furthered their lead through Ryan C,
who crossed for a superb try after great interplay with scrumhalf Mateo. A difficult conversion was slotted over by captain Jacob O. Further tries by Ryan and Gregor, with another conversion by Gabri, gave Ñandú a 48-0 victory, even though the scoreline did not reflect the match. A special mention to El Medano’s Rob, Danny and Victor, just some of their outstanding players. And with local clubs working together, the future of Canarian Rugby looks strong. Season over! Mallorca 1 CD Tenerife 0
By Roscoe AN insipid defeat against fellowislanders Mallorca ended Tenerife’s last hopes of sneaking a playoff place.
Ortuno’s late goal gave the hosts a massive three points in their quest to avoid the drop, condemning Tenerife to four dead rubbers. I’m sure manager Jose Marti will use the games as a chance to look at the side for next season.
He inked a contract extension in midweek, and midfielder Javi Lara also signed up for another season as the offfield work gathers pace. With Dani set to link up with Venezuela in the Copa America, Roberto will get a chance to play himself into the squad. The keeper is now 25 and no longer a kid, so it’s literally now or never for him. And it’s the same story for Alberto, who will surely get a run of games in midfield, probably at the expense of Ricardo, who must be entering his last month with the club.
Jorge should get another chance at centreback, while Jairo and
Cristo should also get their chances. Decisions will have to
be made on Raul Camara and Cristian, who both seem set to leave.
This weekend, Tenerife host Real Valladolid. Meanwhile, a quick “well done” to Mensajero. The La Palma outfit struggled at the start of their first season in the third tier of Spanish football, but they have found their feet recently. A fine run of form, especially at home, gave them a chance at survival. And this was confirmed last weekend when they battered already-relegated Getafe B 5-0. It’s quite an achievement and shows how strong football is in the Canary Islands, with Las Palmas retaining their La Liga status.
Champions held at Scruffys OFF we go again, with what looks like being another fine, interesting season of Oasis Fm darts league action. And there was plenty of pre-season banter flying around between certain teams. It was apt, therefore, that the fixture list pitted two of the culprits together in an eye-opening clash at
Scruffy Macs. Phoenix Bar, visitors and reigning champions, with a slightly new-look side, were given a stern test by the “dream team”. And a fine performance by the debutants saw the points shared - after Mitch checked-out to take the trebles leg for Phoenix. A great atmosphere, and a great start to the
ham pinged one in for newly-promoted Spear Chuckers, who lost 3-5 to The Pub. The term “needle in a haystack” comes to mind when trying to pick a favourite in the 17-team, Division 2 line-up. With a few new teams and new faces on board, it promises to be very interesting. But for now, all we
can say is that Waterfall B, having finished bottom last term, have turned the table on its head and now sit top of the pile, courtesy of a 6-2 victory at Nauta Nomads, with Frank’s first maximum and a 90 check-out by Kath. The Tavern, first-timers and maybe dark horses, clocked up a handsome six points
at Pas O Nadas B, while long-time members Sundowners Bar also hit a six as they welcomed back our Belgian friends from Rood. Elsewhere, the inhouse banter will already have started in Marilyns because both their teams won 5-3. This looks set to go all the way!

Frankly, it’s a Devaney doddle THAT’S it for another season, with not too much drama unfolding on the final day of the Premier League - well, apart from discovering that the Chuckle Brothers are in charge of Old Trafford security. The same can’t be said for the Oasis Fm Fantasy League, though, as we did have a few twists and turns for top-10 positions. Firstly, congratulations to winning team boss Frank Devaney, whose Baines on Toast side have been on top for quite a while, thanks to some shrewd man-
agement. In the end, Frank won by a clear 99 points. But below him, things changed over the final games. Matthew Potts’ team put in a good performance, which saw him jump a few places and snatch second spot. And Elodie Townsend also had a good final week, climbing to fourth, which meant Warren Wilson lost place. In the Oasis Fm battle for bragging rights, Roscoe just managed to get in front of Chris Elkington last week, taking ninth spot. But
his team had a bad final week and Chris leapfrogged him back into ninth. So Chris get bragging rights, with Roscoe 10th. Then, rather embarrassingly for Adi Benson, the so-called football expert finished in 59th spot. That meant John Zammit again “won” the Oasis Fm wooden spoon, finishing 88th. The steaks are on you, John! Overall woodenspoon winners were Adeje Giants FC, managed by Danny James, who eventually finished on 1,325 points - a huge 974 be-
hind this season’s winner. The final Team of the Week went to Mikey Geraghty, with his subtly-named Norfolk N Chance team, who scored 69 points. His start players were his captain, Giroud (34), and Wijnaldum (15). So that’s it for another season. Keep an eye on Canarian Weekly, and have your radios tuned to Oasis Fm for details of next season’s Fantasy League, which starts in early August. Thanks for all your participation, and let’s look forward to locking horns again.

European Championship Preview 2016
By Adi Benson
France have big chance!
WITH the Premier League over for another season, our attention turns to the forthcoming European Championship in France, which begins on Friday, 10th June. Over the next few weeks, we will take a closer look at the groups, starting with Group A, which includes the host nation. France couldn’t have asked for a better draw as they prepare to face Albania, Romania and Switzerland in Group A. The records show that France are unbeaten against these teams in major tournaments, recording eight wins and six draws. Albania are appearing at the championship for the first time, while Romania have made just four appearances since 1960. And the Swiss have never advanced past the group stages, so it is no wonder that France are odds-on favourites - at least to win the group.
FRANCE
ALBANIA
Three teams have won the Euro’s as hosts and the French are bidding to become the only side to win it twice on home soil following their 1984 victory. After winning the tournament back in 2000, then finishing runnersup to Italy in the 2006 World Cup, the French have since been in the wilderness when it comes to the major competitions. They hit rockbottom in the 2010 World Cup, exiting in the group stages, and they were knocked out Euro 2012 and World Cup 2014 in the quarter-finals. However they have a strong squad this time, and there is an impressive list of players who have not made the squad. The likes of Benzema and Schneiderlin would walk into any other nation’s squad. Star of the show should be Paul Pogba, named Best Young Player at the last World Cup, in Brazil, and who has been instrumental in the success of Juventus this season.
This is Albania’s first appearance in this competition, achieved by finishing second in Group I of the qualifying rounds. Their 3-0 victory over Armenia in October 2015 sparked wild celebrations as their qualification was confirmed. But the highlight of their campaign, surely, has to be the 1-0 win over Portugal. With Albania being a founding member of UEFA, it is great to see them make an appearance, finally, at a major tournament. And if they can keep up their recent run of not finishing bottom of a qualifying group in their last seven campaigns, they may find that third is enough to see them out of the group stages. It’s also worth remembering that they have played France twice in the last two years and haven’t lost!

Switzerland
romania
The Swiss had a decent qualifying campaign, eventually finishing second in their group behind the unbeaten England team. What was impressive was their goal-scoring pedigree, after hitting 24 goals in 10 games. They missed out on Euro 2012 after qualifying in 2004 and 2008, and they’re looking to advance to the knock-out stages for the first time in their history. Given the teams in Group A, they must fancy their chances of finishing second. They are a difficult team to beat and certainly know how to frustrate the opposition, especially with their goal-scoring prowess. They went out to Argentina only in extratime in the last World Cup, and nobody will want to play them in the knock-out stages.
Romania are making their third appearance in the competition since 2000, when they made a surprise run to the quarter finals, famously beating England 3-2 in the group stages. They are an improving side and went through qualifying unbeaten. However five draws meant that they actually finished runners-up in the group to Northern Ireland. They have some good youngsters in their squad, and look out for Alexandru Maxim, who could be classed as an older statesman at just 25. But he made nine good appearances in qualifying and has had a decent league campaign at Stuttgart. The secret weapon, though, could be teenager George Puşcaş, who is signed to Inter Milan. Whatever happens, they will get great experience ahead of an effort to make the World Cup in Russia.
Manager: Vladimir Petković Odds: 66/1 World ranking: 14th Best Bet: 13/8 to finish second in Group A
Manager: Anghel Iordnescu Odds: 200/1 World ranking: 19th Best Bet: 6/1 to score no points
