The return of Starmus Continued from front In fact, the Festival previously held in 2011 and 2014 - celebrates the world-renowned theoretical physicist, astrophysicist and cosmologist, because it is entitled Beyond the Horizon - a Tribute to Stephen Hawking Starmus will bring together 11 Nobel Prize laureates in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Economics, along with experts and artists from other disciplines at the Arona Pyramid Congress Centre, in the Mare Nostrum hotel complex, in Playa de las Américas. And the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, in recognition of outstanding contributions to scientific dissemination in Science, Art and Cinema, will be presented by the great man himself. Brian Eno, keynote speaker of this edition, has created a unique composition as a tribute to Professor Hawking, based on the sound of the stars. The musical agenda will feature unique shows like the Sonic Universe concert, in which Hans Zimmer, Sarah Brightman, with the Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife, and rock band Anathema, will provide exclusive performances. In collaboration with the Tenerife and La Palma Cabildos, Festival organisers have made a major effort to bring together top-level speakers in Sciences, with worldwide major artists and musicians, to share their experiences and knowledge. During the four-day science and music spectacular, world-class re-
searchers will address highly-relevant global issues: the classic question of whether extraterrestrial life exists; the effects of climate change; the advances or dangers of artificial intelligence; cyber security and current network threats, and the consequences of the rising inequalities in the evolution of the economic growth. In the words of Garik Israelian, who created Starmus in 2011: “We are living one of those key moments in the history of science in which any discovery could trigger a revolution. “All speakers at this festival are directly involved in many of these revolutionary findings, and Starmus is an invitation to the curious, experts, and all those who love science, to plunge into the important threats and discoveries the world is facing.” Alicia Vanoostende Simili, La Palma Tourism Minister, said: “It is an honour for the Island that the Starmus programme will hold the ‘108-minute Roundtable Discussion’ in the
Grantecan, the largest optical telescope in the planet. “It not only recalls the presence in our territory of world-class scientific facilities; it also backs the insular administration support for astrotourism and the promotion of our clean skies to contemplate the firmament.” Cristobal de la Rosa, the Canarian Government’s Deputy Tourism Minister stressed: “The Starmus Festival associates the Canary Islands brand to one of the most important international events, celebrating the meeting of Science and Arts. “This fosters our work in star-gazing, natural spaces and cultural tourism. Besides, it provides us with a real experience of collaboration between the touristic, scientific and cultural sectors which guides and encourages us.” Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso added: “We are delighted to again host in Tenerife this important event, which highlights the public’s growing interest in sky observation activities.
“As The New York Times stated recently in an extensive report about the astronomical tourism and the possibilities of Tenerife, our goal must remain the excellence. Holding Starmus in Tenerife is, for certain, an achievement of this goal.” This third Starmus Festival, bringing together many prominent speakers, includes 11 Nobel laureates in the disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Economics: Robert Wilson and David Gross, Nobel prizes in Physics in 1978 and 2004, respectively; Adam Riess and Brian Schmidt, who shared a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011; François Englert, Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013, shared with Peter Higgs; Eric Betzig, Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014. Also, biologists Carol Greider and Elizabeth Blackburn, Nobel Prize in Medicine shared in 2009; Married couple Edvard Moser and MayBritt Moser, both Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine in 2014, and Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize in Economics in
2001 and Nobel Peace Prize, shared in 2007, for his work from 1995, as a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The Festival will bring together the world’s most renowned astrophysicists, such as Neil deGrasse Tyson, Kip Thorne and Martin Rees. It will also feature evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins; Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics head of the University of Oxford, Steven Balbus, and Brian E. Cox, Professor of Physics at the University of Manchester, who is best known to the public as host of scientific TV shows. They will address topics ranging from the future of space exploration to black holes, along with the origin and future of the universe. The space race will be represented by US astrophysics Jill Tarter, pioneer and promoter of SETI Centre (Search for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence) and one of the world’s leading scientists regarding the search for extra-terres-
trials life. Among the speakers will be legends such as astronauts Michael Lopez-Alegria, Garrett Reisman, Claude Nicollier and Rusty Schweickart, best-known as the Lunar Module Pilot on the 1969 Apollo 9 mission He was also former President of the B612 Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to defending Earth from asteroid impacts. Starmus will also feature Russian cosmonauts Roman Romanenko, Sergey Volkov and Alexei Leonov, the first man to perform a spacewalk, who has participated in the Starmus Festival since its inception. At the end of the Festival, Art, Music and Science will meet under the same roof in the great Sonic Universe concert. Thanks to Sarah Brightman, UNESCO ambassador, music icon and actress, and Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, you can enjoy a unique show, with stunning visions of the universe. It’s a journey through space, where the audience will glimpse from the bursts of explosive celestial energy to the nebulae’s static beauty. And, of course, Brian May, former Queen guitarist and Rick Wakeman, from progressive rock group Yes, will again be among the guests. in this edition. In fact, Wakeman and Chris Hadfield will perform a special tribute to David Bowie, through singular interpretations of the legendary songs of Bowie, such as Space Oddity and Life on Mars.

Rajoy pledges more ‘austerity measures’
MARIANO Rajoy, Spain’s acting Prime Minister, will bring in new austerity measures if he is returned to Government after next month’s election.
ability to form a new government. With no other party able to do so, either, the June vote will attempt to unblock the political stalemate. In his letter to the EC, Rajoy cites a “complex political context”. He is expected to win again next month, but
he would almost certainly need to be supported by at least one other party to remain in power. Yet Spain’s plea seems to have had some effect. Last week, Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said it was “not the right
moment, economically or politically” to sanction Spain. It’s because the EC announced that an anticipated decision on action regarding the country’s deficit would be delayed until July. Spain failed to meet its EU-agreed deficit
targets for each of the four years Rajoy was in power. In 2015, the deficit was 5.1% of GDP, against a 4.2% target, making Spain liable for a fine of up to 2.1bn euros. The long-standing, often-delayed aim has been to reduce the shortfall to under 3%
He believes he must, in an effort to avoid a European Commission sanction for failing to control the public deficit. Earlier this month, conservative Rajoy wrote to EC President Jean-Claude Juncker, requesting leeway on the deficit issue in return for introducing new cuts later in 2016. On Monday, El País newspaper published the letter, which said: “In the second half of the year, once there is a new government, we are prepared to adopt new measures.” But it contradicts public statements by Mr Rajoy, who has ruled out further austerity while campaigning, and he has even promised tax cuts if voted back in after the 26th June election. Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) won an inconclusive election in December and lost its congressional majority, thus negating his
THE conservative Popular Party now an “acting” Government, having been in charge for four years could take a larger share of the vote in Spain’s fresh elections next month.
But it still won’t be enough to break the deadlock, which has prevented the formation of a new government since December. The survey, by private pollster Metroscopia, was published in last
Unidos Podemos really could give PP a good run, but…
Private election poll predicts same again Sunday’s El Pais newspaper, and also suggests that the newcomer Unidos Podemos alliance could oust the Socialists as Spain’s main opposition party. Metroscopia’s poll showed support for the Popular Party increasing 9.1 points to 29.9% from 20.8% it gleaned last December, with
the Socialists slipping to 20.2% from 21.9%. Unidos Podemos moved ahead of the socialists with 23.2% of the vote. Podemos merged with far-left Izquierda Unida in a bid to break the stalemate since the inconclusive election, which left none of the parties able to form a
coalition government. Months of negotiations failed to secure a breakthrough, so another General Election will be held on 26th June. But with similar results expected, there’s little hope of a result. Voters, angered by 20% unemployment, austerity cuts and
corruption, fractured Spain’s long-standing two-party system in four, with Podemos and business-friendly Ciudadanos entering Parliament alongside the Popular Party and Socialists. True, the Popular Party heads a caretaker government, but it has been mired in corrup-
GDP. And the Commission has given Spain an extra year -until 2017to do so. Madrid now hopes to avoid the financial burden and embarrassment of a fine. Rajoy, highlighting the structural reforms and savings his “acting” government has already made, told Juncker: “It would not be a good precedent to penalise, in the same way, those countries which reform their economies as those which do not.” But the government’s apparent commitment to further austerity this year has drawn criticism. “Rajoy says one thing in Brussels and quite another in Spain,” said Socialist Party leader Pedro Sánchez, who has promised to request two years’ grace from the EC to meet the 3% deficit target if he becomes prime minister. The government’s efforts to cut the deficit in recent years have been deeply unpopular. But Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo appeared to criticise the budgetary demands of Brussels earlier this month, saying: “We have gone too far with austerity.” He later claimed he was talking about Europe as a whole and not Spain.
tion cases which have quashed its ambition to persuade another party to join hands in a coalition. Its leader and acting PM, Mariano Rajoy, said it would be “very bad news if Podemos were to become the second political force”. Socialist Party leader Pedro Sanchez said at a Madrid rally that if his party won, “there would be a new government in a week - a clean government”. The pollster quizzed 1,200 adults in a 1718th May survey, which has that has a 2.9% margin of error.

In-Out referendum eases some worries OVER 120 people attended Tuesday’s Brexit/Bremain conference at Adeje Cultural Centre, with questions to the panel ranging from issues about pensions to healthcare provisions.
There were also queries concerning the possible financial implications to businesses and exchange-rates should the Leave campaigners succeed in next month’s Referendum. The conference, organised by the FOCUS Adeje International Residents Group, in conjunction with Adeje Council, was attended by British residents from Adeje and other boroughs. Adeje Deputy Mayor Carmen Rosa Gonzalez Cabrera opened the proceedings, telling them: “Today’s event is about you and how the
vote on 23rd June might affect you and your families. “I hope that the answers you get this afternoon will clear up doubts you may have, and help you have a clearer vision of what matters.” She added: “From my point of view, and from the Council’s point of view, you are as much a part of Adeje as anyone else who lives here. “We are all part of the
European family, and we don’t want to lose you, so I do hope that on 23rd June, the majority vote will be to remain in the European Union.” The panel speakers were Paul Montague, from finance company Blevins Franks; Adejebased Spanish lawyer José Escobedo, and Tenerife blogger Janet Anscombe. They answered a range of questions from the audience, easing fears
Playa Paraiso relaunch
ADEJE Council, together with the Cabildo and the Chamber of Commerce, are to promote a comprehensive plan to improve the Playa Paraiso services, via its restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. The announcement coincides with the October opening of the luxury Hard Rock Hotel, as reported in last week’s Canarian Weekly. Entrepreneurs and institutions in Playa Paraiso agree that the arrival of the new five-star hotel, which will attract the younger, affluent tourist, means things will have to sharpen up in order to stay competitive. The four-phase plan, presented last week to local tour operators, is aimed at improving the area’s general presentation, making it a more attractive destination for visitors. The action, to be focused on underlining restaurants and retail outlets, will address the various stages, dividing the tasks between prominent bodies. The first applies to
Adeje Council, with innovation workshops. Then there’s the Chamber of Commerce, which deals with the diagnosis of outlets, and the Council’s response to the decoach phase (interior design and decoration). The final phase will be dedicated to the improvement of tourist space. The training part - innovation workshops and diagnostics for Point of Sales - will be aimed at promoting commercial creativity, business models and interior design in stores in tourist areas. The diagnosis point of sale requires a specialist team to conduct a thorough analysis on trade
aspects, which need improvement for greater profitability. In the decoach phase, training in interior design, trade and restoration is needed. A consultant team will visit the establishments and provide personalised training sessions to create new experiences that generate sales. The last stage, the improvement of tourist space, will increase Playa Paraiso’s quality, to maintain its competitiveness and leadership. In short, it’s a plan which includes training, improving public and private spaces, and support for small and medium enterprises.
of any immediate, major and unwelcome repercussions in the event of a No vote - with the supposition that in the event of a Yes vote, very little would need to change. Paul Montague told the audience that if the majority vote were to leave the European Union, negotiations to “extract the UK from the EU would take a minimum of two years, and most likely many more”. He also referred people to the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties’ “Acquired Rights”, which states that the termination of a treaty, in this case the UK’s membership of the EU, “does not affect any right, obligation or legal situation of the parties created through the execution of the treaty, prior to its termination” (Article 70.1B). Paul added: “In a nutshell, if you have made your bed in another country (taxes, residencia, home and social)
then, under this convention, these have to remain”. José Escobedo also referred to regional laws which protected residents, and reaffirmed the long-standing good relations the British and the Spanish have enjoyed over the centuries. “We even kept one of Nelson’s arms”, he quipped. The local lawyer, who added that the relationship was unlikely to be changed by the vote, also addressed the legal issue of resident status. He stated clearly that anyone who had lived and registered as a resident in Spain over a number of years, would continue to enjoy all the rights and benefits of a resident, regardless of the Referendum outcome. Janet Anscombe told the conference that many of the perceived EU-related problems in the UK were, in fact, issues of national policy. “The UK has a residency-based social wel-
fare system, so anyone who resides in the UK has automatic rights to housing, social welfare and health benefits; whereas here in Spain, it’s a contributory social welfare system, so if you haven’t paid in, you can’t claim. “That has nothing to do with the EU - it is a result of British Government policy and something I don’t see any political party in the UK likely to change. But people are tending to blame the European Union for the negative effects it can produce.” At the end of the meeting, a show of hands indicated quite a high number of those in attendance had registered to vote. It was a reflection of both the huge interest this matter has for overseas UK residents, and the high-profile campaign run by the UK Government to encourage the millions of Britons living abroad to register.

Prostate cancer not such a deep secret
Referendum vote? Time running out BRITISH expats registered to vote in the UK within the last 15 years have until Tuesday (7th June) to apply for a proxy vote in the EU Referendum.
That is the final deadline for registering to take part in one of the most historic decisions Britons will make for a generation. The postal vote registration deadline has now passed, but you can still appoint someone you trust in the UK to vote for you. Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, said: “You can still register to vote by proxy, as long as you do so by 7th June. We all know how important the referendum will be - for us, for our children, and for our country. “Whether you think we should leave or remain, I would encourage those who have not yet registered to vote, and who are eligible to do so, to avail themselves of this final opportunity to have their say on 23rd June. He added: “I am well aware that expats who have lived overseas for more than 15 years are ineligible, and I know that many are frustrated about that. “The government will bring forward the Overseas Elector Bill to abolish this arbitrary time
27th May - 2nd June 2016
limit, but it must undergo full Parliamentary scrutiny and debate, so, unfortunately, it cannot be passed before the Referendum.” More than 120,000 people with Spanish IP addresses have now visited www.gov.uk/register-to-vote since the beginning of the year. And, thanks to the online registration system, more than 180,000 expats worldwide have so far completed their registration to vote. That’s nearly double the number who voted in last year’s General Election, which was itself a record figure. The process is easy and takes just five minutes. Go to www.gov. uk/register-to-vote - or search for “UK register to vote” on www.gov.uk. You need only your National Insurance number and passport. If you did vote in last year’s General Election, don’t assume you are still on the electoral roll. Just as in the UK, you must renew your registration every year. You have until 7th June to go online and make sure you can have your say. If you were last on the electoral roll in Northern Ireland, you need to act quickly. The Electoral Office for Northern Ireland says that if you are appointing a proxy to vote at the EU Referendum, the deadline for sending in your printed application is 5pm on 3rd June.
MORE than 200,000 men in the Canaries are believed to have prostate problems. They also urinate badly and are somewhat reluctant to disclose their medical problems, according to urologist Francisco Juarez. The total of males affected corresponds to a statistical calculation which maintains that 50% of the over-45s encounter these problems. The prostate is a marble-shaped gland which sits either side of the urethra, where it comes out of the bladder., and Juarez, director of the Office of Urology and Andrology, explains that this body sur-
rounds the urethra, and its growth can cause problems when urinating or ejaculating. The reasons for this growth are often hormone-like “or by the appearance of a benign tumour”, says the urologist. Thus, an organ weighing 10 grams when the man is 18 may end up weighing 50-70gms when he’s 45. “My record is 215gms,” adds Juarez. If the diagnosis is made early on, the urologist tries immediately to reduce these symptoms with drugs. “With these drugs, we have managed to operate half of what
was necessary 30 years ago,” he says. “These treatments, based on synthetic chemicals or plant extracts, try to prevent or reduce obstructive symptoms, and the patient can improve.” Prostatitis is common among young people and can occur once they are sexually active. And the prostate grows 45% over 45 years, says the specialist. However, when the bladder suffers an obstruction, and medicines no longer work, a highpower, green laser can be addressed aggressively, and without bleeding the large prostates. The Cabinet of Urology
and Andrology became Spain’s fourth centre to incorporate this innovative technology in 2007. But Juarez stresses that there can be “some reluctance” on the part of men to consult prostate problems, because it is something which affects “the depths”. However, the education of young people and new technologies have facilitated the consultation of these problems anonymously, via the internet. Alternatively, says Juarez, the website of the Cabinet of Urology and Andrology sends a letter to the doctor for free, and it is answered within 48 hours.
Relief for Cameron THE European Commission is delaying taking disciplinary action against Spain and Portugal for breaking budget rules until after the EU referendum.
Brussels said the postponement of possible action, which could include fines, was down to the new general election in Spain on 26th June, which is just three days after the referendum on Britain’s EU membership. It certainly avoids handing a propaganda weapon to Britain’s Brexit campaigners, and the announcement by Pierre Moscovici, European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, that the two countries, badly affected by the eurozone crisis, would be given more time to repair their public finances, will also come as a relief to David Cameron. The Prime Minister has been lifted by recent polls, which suggest the Remain campaign is pulling ahead in the referendum battle. But he is keen that potential punishments for countries breaking EU fiscal rules, along with decisions on other
potentially-toxic topics such as the Greek debt and migration, should be delayed for just over a month. Following an intervention from EC President Jean-Claude Juncker, Moscovici informed a news conference in Brussels that the Commission did not consider this was the right moment, economically or politically, to get tough. The inability of Spain’s caretaker government to take budget decisions ahead of the election justified putting off a decision until early July, he said. Instead, Brussels wants to see further action to reduce borrowing, and it will review the positions of Portugal and Spain in early July. The countries have both failed to reduce their budget deficits below the limit of 3% of national output,
demanded by the EC. Brussels also granted Italy the maximum flexibility under EU fiscal discipline procedures, in response to demands from Rome to be given more space to revive anaemic growth, and cope with the cost of taking in refugees. For Spain and Portugal, the respite could prove brief because hard-line eurozone countries, led by Germany, insist that enforcement action be taken in early July. In theory, the commission could fine the two countries up to 0.2% of their GDP for breaking the rules. Spain was set a target to reduce its budget deficit to 4.2% of GDP in 2015, but it is on course for a 5.1% shortfall. Portugal’s 2.7% of GDP target will be breached by 1.7%. Moscovici cited the Spanish election and
the fact that a caretaker government was unable to make decisions on the budget, among factors in the decision to defer action. “We are proposing new deadlines for both countries to correct their excessive deficits,” he said. “We propose that each country receives one extra year and one extra year only. The new deadline for Portugal will be 2016, and for Spain, 2017.” Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING, said the decision on Spain made technical sense, since a new government in Madrid would be needed to implement any possible recommendations from the commission. He added: “At the same time, however, this decision also has a slight air of avoiding a political clash during the election campaign, as Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, has recently caught attention with promises to cut taxes after the elections. “At the current juncture, with most eurozone countries desperately trying to revive growth and tackle unemployment, the decision was, in our view, the right decision. It is not always a bad thing if barking dogs don’t bite.”

Tenerife to be business hub for African Routes
The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
It’s called legal mugging! THIS Editor’s Column comes to you direct from the UK, where I’m having a cheeky few days away … and there’s nothing like a few days off before a busy period! June is going to be mad, with the Euro 2016 tournament, and getting away from the Rock certainly opens your eyes to a few things. Firstly, nothing has changed at Tenerife South airport. The bar prices are a joke, the Duty Free is certainly not - and all the Brits still rush to Burger King before they take off. I’d love to be on 10% of that till. If you ever get bored in the airport, play the “rip-off” game at Duty Free. The first person to find an item - any item that is actually cheaper than outside the airport wins. It took me 30 minutes before I found a Marques de Caceres that was, and, I’m not kidding, five cents cheaper than in HyperDino. It’s actually beyond a joke. How do they get away with it under the “Duty Free” banner? I know this curse is not unique to our airport, but some of the prices for basics, like water, are criminal. And it’s the same on board the plane. My inflight shopping maga-
zine had a rather tastylooking snack option, and though it was on the wrong side of six euros for a sandwich, I thought: “When in Rome ...” Let me tell you, even hungry Christians in the Colosseum wouldn’t have opened the offending item that turned up on my tray. I understand that it’s bad manners to send back food on a plane. But what are they going to do, kick me off? Back it went, unopened, I must add, and I’m sure some poor mug at the back of the plane would have received it instead. I will gloss over the six euros for the one-swig bottle of wine they sell, and the three euros for the world’s smallest packet of peanuts. And who wants to buy scratch cards on a plane? I’m in the minority when it comes to plane prices. How airlines can survive when they charge, say, 120 euros for a one-way flight which has to travel over 2,000km, is behind my maths. That’s the same price for a taxi from Los Cristianos to Loro Parque! Most planes fly at a loss. I know they need the extra money, but that’s still no reason to mug us off in the cabin!

TENERIFE is gearing up to host the world’s largest route-development forum for the African region, known as Routes Africa, which is expected to attract around 250 experts in this field.
Officials from airlines and airports, as well as tourism authorities, will get together to discuss how to develop the aviation industry further on the African continent. Routes Africa will take place between 26-28th June at Costa Adeje’s Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque Resort. The decision to hold this renowned forum in Tenerife was down to the Island’s strategic location and ambitions. The Island, just 300km off the Moroccan coast, is closer to the African continent than the European mainland.
This is why the Island aims to become a connecting, aviation hub between continents: Europe, Africa and the Americas. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, said: “Tenerife’s long-term aim is to become a logistical stepping-stone to Africa, building on our strong historical ties with the continent. “Routes Africa is an important part of our activities to strengthen our economic and transport links through new aviation services.” Some of the leading airlines signed up for the event include South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, ASKY Air-
lines, Binter Canarias, Iberia and Norwegian. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicts that seven of the 10 fastestgrowing passenger markets over the next 20 years will be in Africa (Malawi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia). Aviation in the continent currently generates more than $80bn in GDP, and supports 6.9 million jobs. By bringing together senior decision-makers from the aviation industry, the Routes Africa organisers hope to harness the potential for growth in the African
continent. Routes Africa adds to Tenerife’s credentials as an unrivalled destination to host world-class events. In the past few months, the Island has welcomed, among others, the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) - recognised as the most important international meeting for the golf travel industry; and the first Lego League Open European Championship - an international event aimed at promoting science and technology to young people. Next month (27th June-2nd July), Tenerife will again host the Starmus Festival - Tribute to Stephen Hawking, which is a unique fusion of science, music and art, featuring some of the greatest minds of our time. Tenerife will also host Seatrade Cruise Med 2016, which will be the largest cruise industry event to focus on the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas.
Bento happy to tackle some sticky questions ENRIQUE Hernández Bento, Government delegate in the Canary Islands and President of Gran Canaria Cabildo, has occupied his “delegate” position for just seven months. In that time, he has had several meetings with businessmen, neighbourhood associations and police unions to get to know them, their aspirations and to discover several key projects in which they are involved, including crime in the Archipelago. And he is prepared to answer their questions Has the crime rate lowered so far this year? “In the National Police territory, criminal offences have declined by 4.84% between January and April, compared with the same period of 2015. “The
decline by provinces has been 2% in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, and 8% in Las Palmas. In the demarcation of the Guardia Civil, there has been a 3% reduction in the Islands, and a similar percentage has been registered nationally. “It means that, compared with the average across the country, we maintain a lower crime rate (43.7 per 1,000 on average in the rest of Spain and 42.6 in the archipelago). “I believe that security must remove the political debate. In general, in the Canary Islands, the feeling is that we live in a safe place, although I understand the neighbour who suffers a violent robbery at his home. His subjective perception of safety is not the same as
the citizen who has not undergone that experience. “I understand people (individuals, groups, businessmen and mayors) who use the media to denounce a situation. In the South, there have been several violent incidents “I sit with entrepreneurs and groups and listen to them, but I do not agree with what they say. When I say that safety is a matter for all, I mean you cannot pretend that in every nightclub, there will be a policeman on the door to prevent those fights occurring. I stand by the co-ordination with local police and entrepreneurs. “We are now on a very nice project to bring German, French and Italian police to patrol
our tourist areas, and some employers will provide accommodation for them. I think the collaboration will work very well. “Such exchange of information does not seem so clear in many municipalities between different bodies. “We must be proactive in collaboration, because we can help on many issues. For example, on the subject of information about car number plates or databases, it is clear that co-operation can be improved. “The Canaries is a safe tourist destination, but we cannot throw stones on our own roof and question the level of security. “Should we continue working to improve? Why, yes!”

Loro Parque eye-opener for visiting student vets LORO Parque last weekend opened its doors to 25 first-year students studying veterinary medicine at the University of Las Palmas, in Gran Canaria.
They visited Tenerife for an understanding of the daily work carried out by the park’s resident vets, which guarantees the health of all the inmates there. The visit was overseen by Javier Almunia, director of environmental affairs at Loro Parque Fundación, enabling the students to enjoy the facilities of Europe’s best zoo - and the secondbest in world, according to TripAdvisor. They had the opportunity to talk to several authorities and care-givers, who gave the party an insight of their work
and answered their questions. The students also learned about the health care of cetaceans, thanks to an interesting presentation by the trainers themselves, who taught the students about tech-
niques of positive reinforcement, and how they accomplish a voluntary attendance of the dolphins and orcas in their daily medical check-ups. The group also visited the park’s innovative, technical rooms, where
the filtrations plants ensure the best water quality for the animals, as well as the premises, for the preparation of individual feed quantity, adjusted specifically to the characteristics and needs of our animals.
As the students learned, accurate training and specific feeding reduces diseases and improves the animals’ wellbeing. Planet Penguin, one of the biggest penguin sanctuaries worldwide, was also part of the visit of the prospective vets. It’s an impressing facility, which surprised the students with these smart animals, which live in Loro Parque. Throughout the entire day, the students showed close interest and enthusiasm, especially at Animal Embassy, one of the most emotional zones at Loro Parque and Loro
Parque Fundación. In this special area, they saw the baby-station for the hand-rearing of birds, and more than 130 projects involved in the protection of biodiversity and natural habitations, spread over the whole world. Since the founding of the non-governmental organisation in 1994, more than 16 million dollars have been invested in Loro Parque’s conservation actions. Loro Parque was delighted with the students’ visit and hopes their further studies of veterinary medicine are successful.

The big wait grows longer HOSPITAL waiting time for an operation in Spain has gone up to 89 days, which is an increase of two days, year-on-year. Of more concern is that waiting times have increased by 13 days since 2012, even though there are now 500,000 fewer residents using the health care system. In total, there are nearly 550,000 patients awaiting non-urgent procedures. Patients waiting for neuro-surgical operations will be kept waiting for the longest period - 160 days - followed by 135 days for plastic-surgery patients and 112 for those requiring traumatology treatment.
Vegans - the bare facts
TWENTY vegan activists, from the animal rights organisation AnimaNaturalis, took part in a street performance at Barcelona’s Placa Sant Jaume on Sunday. They were protesting against the production and consumption of meat, stripping naked and crouching on on human-sized trays on bended knees. Other activists then poured fake blood on them and packaged them up, as if they were meat products to be sold in a supermarket.
Police arrest ring-leaders TENERIFE’S National Police, based in Las Americas, have arrested a 10-strong group of people, including a businessman and a consultant. They are believed to be the ringleaders, accused of buying fake employment contracts and selling them to illegal immigrants. After several months of research, the police uncovered a plot linking the men to two employment agencies in Los Cristianos, managed by the consultant and responsible for attracting the illegals. By selling the phoney contracts, the men will have made a profit in excess of 6,000 euros. It is understood that these immigrants were getting certain administrative and tax benefits. For now, 10 people have been arrested, including the two ringleaders.

Navy drill features maritime terrorism THE Navy has been testing in waters near the port of Santa Cruz this week, completing training drills to counter maritime terrorism and human trafficking.
The mock exercise, run in conjunction with the Canary Islands’ Health Ministry, had participants practising being suspicious of travellers with ebola on a ship. The Ministry of Defence said the drill was part of the exercise “Marsec 2016”, which
involved 60 state, local and autonomous bodies in 15 Spanish coastal scenarios, testing the ability of co-ordination and collaboration of the action force at sea. The aim of Marsec 2016 is to check the capacity of collaboration of the Navy Maritime Action Force with other agencies to address maritime security operations and improve co-ordination at sea between the Navy, together with governmental and non-government units. “Collaboration” ranges from activities related to trafficking in narcotics and illegal immigra-
tion, to the health control of immigrants, diving, submarine rescue and disaster-stricken aircraft, fire from ships at sea, as well as guidance and direction of maritime traffic, rescue and relief in the sea. The Health Ministry says the General Directorate of Public Health participated with the Canarian Emergency Department and Candelaria hospital in the drill, organising the islands with the Canaries’ Naval Command, in collaboration with the archipelago’s Government Delegation. The three institutions of the Health Ministry, led by Public Health,
which were responsible for the co-ordination, transfer and specialised health care of two cases of suspected viral haemorrhagic fevers, arrived by boat at the Santa Cruz docks. The Candelaria hospital, the reference centre for the autonomous community to care for these “patients” requiring bio-safety level 3, was also aware of the drills. In the Tenerife scenario, the exercise focused on the approach of a vessel engaged in drugtrafficking and humantrafficking under terrorist threat. The SUC set down on the Santa Cruz pier with a team of 27 health
professionals, including doctors, nurses, devices, technical co-ordination, resource managers and EMTs for the “wounded”. Staff at the Candelaria hospital were also involved, preparing the facilities that house the isolation unit intended for this purpose. It also has a video surveillance system and specific itineraries for patient care. In the centre isolation unit, the hospital staff also packaged samples from the so-called patients taking part in the drill for referral to the University Institute of Tropical Diseases and Public Health.
Tyred of these danger dumps FIFTEEN days before a fire broke out at an illegal tyre dump in Seseña, Toledo, last week, the European Commission queried the site.
And officials also asked Spain about another enormous pile of rubber. This is sited at the Zurita dump in Puerto de Rosario, on the island of Fuenteventura. “According to the information at our disposal, the Zurita dump is a high-fire risk due to exposure to high temperatures and strong winds,” said the Commission in its letter. At Zurita, which includes a waste treatment plant besides the dump proper, gulls gather to check out
the spoils, while three diggers rock perilously atop mountains of waste. There are 200,000 discarded tires here, but, despite the European Commission’s concern and request for information, local authorities insist the tires are not a hazard. Zurita has an enormous depression in the ground covering 67,000sq/m called Cell 3 - which has been filled with thousands of tires. Yet for 10 years, the dumping of untreated tires in this way has been illegal because of a number of components which make them environmentally problematic. In September 2014, the Guardia Civil’s environmental wing, the Seprona, warned Fuerteventura authorities that
dumping tires at Zurita was illegal. And Brussels questions whether Zurita complies with European regulations aimed at preventing exactly the kind of fire that broke out in Seseña last week. Local authorities insist they are dealing with the problem, and that the tires are there because European regulations allow for their use as a foundation for other urban waste. The tires, they say, are being arranged on top of a waterproof sheet to prevent contaminating the ground. These, in turn, will be covered with a half-metre depth of soil, on top of which the island’s other waste will be dumped. According to Fuerteventura Government chief Marcial Morales: “These measures guarantee there will be
no contamination from the new waste. It will turn into an inert, innocuous mass with no environmental side-effects.” But there remains a major problem: there are still 200 tons of leftover tires, which could not be used for this purpose, scattered in piles across the plant. Authorities admit these tires are illegal, and have told the European Commission they will have them removed within the month. They also dismiss Brussels’ fears of another fire, pointing out that there are far fewer tires in Zurita than there are in Seseña. There is, they say, high security at Zurita - 24hour surveillance, security cameras and high fencing - preventing the risk of intruders, while the chances of a fire starting through natu-
ral causes are remote. Three kilometres from Zurita is La Mareta, a suburb of the island’s capital. And, says Puerto del Rosario Mayor, Nicolás Gutiérrez: “The houses are far enough away if anything were to happen.” His confidence is shared by others in the vicinity, such as Margarita Pérez, 54, and her brother Marcial, 53. The possibility of the tires going up in flames and the smoke choking the neighbourhood is not high on their list of concerns. They are much more worried about the streets getting paved and the new warehouses licensed. It is also true that they have no idea what is inside Zurita. “We’re told there’s the odd fridge and a few chairs,” says Margarita.

La Palma-Cristianos ferry service steps up FRED. Olsen has announced its local summer schedule, containing multiple connections between the Santa Cruz port in La Palma and Los Cristianos, with a record 10 sailings a week.
Bluetrail: The most gruelling test of all THIS year’s annual Tenerife Bluetrail mountain race, organised by the Cabildo and taking place on Wednesday, 11th June, has attracted more than 1,500 confirmed runners.
They will test their limits, going from sea level up to 3,555m, and all the information can be found on the website www.tenerifebluetrail. com in Spanish, Eng-
lish and German. Cabildo Sports Minister Cristo Pérez, delighted with the response this year, describes the Bluetrail as “a unique, special event, which covers nearly 100 gruelling kilometres, from the sandy beaches in Tenerife South, all the way up to Teide and down to the coast at Puerto de la Cruz”. The Bluetrail offers four categories, adapted to the different levels and condition of participants. The Ultratrail mode is run over 97km (from Los Cristianos), the Trail will cover 66km (from Vilaflor),
the Marathon is 43km (from La Orotava) and the Mediatrail 20km (from Los Realejos). The overall finishing line will be at the Martiánez Lido, in Puerto de la Cruz. Organisers have also included “Bluetrail Challenge”, a non-competitive trial of 8km in which runners with disabilities can take part. The test will be held on 10th June and starts from the Rambla de Castro. Registration costs 30 euros for the Half, 45 euros for the Marathon, 60 euros for the Trail and 100 euros for
the Ultra. In recent months, discounts have been applied to runners who registered before 11th April, plus 2015 participants. Tenerife Bluetrail 2016 is sponsored by Turismo de Tenerife, Promotur and Cajamar Foundation, in association with companies such as Physiorelax, Tirma, La Molineta, Red Bull, Fonteide, Hospiten, Titsa, Isola, Volkswagen Comerciales Canarias, Cooperativa Fast, Nutrisport, QRV Emergency, Radio Club Tenerife, Tenerife Music and Linda Trophies.
Terrorist hostages freed for £7m - but who paid? THE acting Spanish Government is said to have paid $11 million (£7m) in ransom money to rescue three journalists from the clutches of al-Qaedalinked jihadists in Syria, according to Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak.
Freelance reporters Antonio Pampliega, José Manuel López and Ángel Sastre flew back to Spain on 8th May, having been held hostage by al-Nusra Front for 10 months after being kidnapped when reporting in Aleppo last July.
However, when asked about the newspaper story, Spain’s acting Foreign Minister said he could not confirm or deny that a ransom had been paid to secure their release. “I am not aware that this is the case,” said José Manual García Margallo, when asked for comment in Havana, where a Spanish government delegation was on an official visit. After the three men were released, Spanish Government sources expressed gratitude to Turkey and Qatar for their assistance in negotiations with the jihadist group in Syria. According to Yeni Safak, the Turkish Government communicated
with mediators in Syria and negotiated a payment acceptable to both sides after the hostage-takers had initially asked for $25 million (£17m). The final sum paid by the Spanish Government was a reported $11.1 million (£7m) plus a shipment of aid to refugee camps for displaced persons inside Syria. The Turkish newspaper reported that the three Spaniards were put under the care of Qatari agents, who took them to the Turkish border, prior to their handover to Spanish representatives. Along with France and other European countries, Spain has reportedly paid a series
of ransoms to Islamist terrorist groups to free hostages over recent years. Three separate kidnapping incidents, in which Spaniards were held by Islamist groups in Africa, were reportedly resolved by the payment of ransoms totalling an estimated $17.5 million (£11m) between 2010 and 2013. And in 2014, three other Spanish journalists were released after being held hostage by Isil. The Spanish Government has never commented on the issue of ransom payment. But the US Treasury estimates that $165m (£114m) has reached the coffers of terrorist organisations since 2008!
There are six connections between Tenerife South and the La Palma capital currently. And, until the end of June, the ferry leaves La Palma at 5.30am for a journey of about 2½ hours. The return voyage departs Los
Cristianos at 1pm. The situation will change dramatically from July, when the shipping company has scheduled ferries every day and, sometimes, up to two frequencies on Wednesdays and Saturdays. In August, the month which attracts the most Canarian tourists to the Island, the schedule reaches 10 services a week in Tenerife: one every day as a general rule, leaving at 6am, and another at 4pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. And the prices are excellent. If you book through the website, the price is just 24 euros per resident per trip.
Ryanair’s Remain ticket BUDGET airline Ryanair has done its level best to back the stay-inEurope campaign with a “Fly Home to Vote Remain” ticket for just 19.99 euros, including taxes, between 22nd and 23rd June.
The deal, which expired last Thursday, was aimed at tempting the 1.2 million British nationals living within the EU to fly back to Britain to vote in the In-Out EU referendum on 23rd June. Yet the cheap-flight offer was open to all nationalities. Ryanair has supported the UK remaining in Europe, saying membership creates jobs and boosts economic growth. The low-cost Irish
company says the EU’s open-skies policy has transformed the tourism sector, while the free movement of goods and services has made Britain one of the most competitive economies in Europe. It also argues that the reforms secured by British Prime Minister David Cameron are sufficient to protect the pound, limit immigration from within the EU, and establish closer union, while at the same time reducing bureaucracy. Ryanair says that if the Brexiteers win, Britain will lose out to Ireland and Germany in attracting foreign investment. Ryanair employs more than 3,000 people at the 13 UK airports from which it operates, and transports more than 41 million passengers each year.

Spanish, but not as she is spoken! THE Spanish language has, over the past few years, been soaking up more and more Anglicisms from slang words to business vocabulary.
Today, many Spanish conversations are peppered with English words … much to the displeasure of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), responsible for overseeing its native tongue. Now, the disgruntled RAE has launched a campaign to fight
against this so-called “English word invasion”. The campaign called, “There’s Only One Mother Tongue’, features two fake adverts, full of Anglicisms, which play on the fact that many Spaniards
do not actually understand the real meaning of the English words “invading” their language. The video promoting the campaign begins with the line, “English is invading advertis-
ing from within” before some common Anglicisms flash across the screen, including the words brain-storming, tool-kit, anti-age, light, eco-friendly and wireless. One advert is for the perfume “Swine”, of which the sultry voiceover describes as “a touch of magic by Rebecca Robinson”. The advert is shown once in its original English, and then a second time with the Spanish voice-over revealing that spritzing yourself with swine “means you smell of pig”. The model in the advert is shown scrunch-
Clavijo recalls the boat-people crisis in Canary Islands CANARIAN Government President Fernando Clavijo is taking part in an international forum on refugees next month, organised by the Greek island of Samos. It sets out the experiences faced by the archipelago a decade ago during the “boat people” crisis, when many adults and children seeking sanctuary in the islands landed, or were rescued at sea, in their cayucos. Clavijo will share the round table at Samos with various European mayors, including those from Berlin, Aci Sant’Antonio (Sicily); Nicosia (Cyprus) plus Konstantinos Yorkatzis, representative for southern Europe’s UNHCR, as well as Giovanni Lepri, co-author of the Committee of the Regions report on refugees and immigration. According to the conference programme, to be held from Thursday to Saturday (2nd-4th June), the Canarian President will address the debate about the need to redesign the social networks of cities and regions to facilitate the full integration of immigrants. Clavijo will recount the experience the Ca-
narians lived through a decade ago when, on the islands’ shores and waters, hundreds of small boats and canoes arrived from Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal and even countries further south on the African continent. It added up to thousands of immigrants (almost 32,000 in 2006 alone) pouring into the Canary Islands. Although the refugee crisis has different connotations, the Canaries went through the challenging, sometimes heart-breaking, experience that other territories, like Lesbos and Samos, in Greece, and the Italian island of Lampedusa, are now facing. It is understood that Clavijo will outline how the archipelago dealt with this humanitarian crisis in a few years, without the massive influx of immigrants to pro-
duce a social fracture. He will also spell out what initiatives need to be taken to tackle at source, the drama which left many young Africans losing their lives at sea in their attempts to reach Europe. Coinciding with its participation in that Samos forum, Alexis Tsipras, President of the Greek Republic, has written to Clavijo to express the
gratitude of his country to the solidarity the Canarian people expressed in the “unprecedented refugee crisis” in the recent history of Europe. In his letter, dated 5th May, Tsipras tells the Canarian President: “We try to do everything we can to respect our international obligations, saving lives and providing shelter for people who need protection. “And we have done so with humanity and sacrifice, while other European countries advocated the path of isolation, and erected fences against refugees.” The Samos forum will include representatives from several Mediterranean countries, including Cypriot Christos Stylianides, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, and civil organisations like the Red Cross, and Doctors without Borders.
ing up her nose at the realisation, while the tag-line of the perfume is: “It sounds very good, but smells very bad.” The second advert is for a pair of sunglasses “with blind effect”. The advert reveals that the cool-sounding “with blind-effect” actually means the wearer cannot see out of the sunglasses. The RAE writes in the video promoting the campaign that it has decided to “fight against Anglicisms in an original and cheeky way”. Enric Nel-lo, creative director of Grey Spain, which made the ad, said: “Advertising
is one of the main sectors affected, and the excessive use of Anglicisms in adverts shown in Spain not only affects the brands but, also, directly affects the public in general and how they perceive commercial messages.” It is not the first time the RAE has criticised the invasion of English into everyday Spanish language. It was vehemently against sending a song sung entirely in English as Spain’s entry to this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The RAE director classed Spain’s choice Barei’s Say Yay! - as “inferior and idiotic”.
Hotel occupancy is best of the century HOTELS in the Canary Islands recorded their best April occupancy-rate this century of 75.6%, which was also seven points higher than the month’s 2015 figures, says the National Statistics Institute (INE).
In fairness, part of Easter fell in that period and would have attracted more tourists than usual at this time of the year. The Canaries led the occupancy rates in Spain, followed at a considerable distance by the Balearic Islands, which attracted 67%. The Canary hotels’ occupancy grew above 10%, with both traveller and overnight stays, despite the lower number of Spanish tourists, which fell by 11.18%. Thus, the Canaries housed 764,608 customers - 10.28% more than the same period last year - and recorded 5.36 million overnight stays, which amounted to 11.12% more. However, rising foreign customers, 88,612, and 16.45% above those of a year ago, more than offset the domestic market decline and pushed up the overnight stays. Hotel nights spent by tourists in the Canary Islands last month ex-
ceeded the 537,165 registered in April 2015. Foreign tourists at the Islands’ hotels totalled 4.82 million on overnight stays, which was 623,192 more (14.81%) than last year’s period, while the Spanish under-performed with 533,591 overnights – 86,027, or 13.88% fewer. This led to superb figures in eight tourist areas in the Canaries, clocking the highest April hotel occupancy in Spain. The first six were registered in Tenerife South (79.53%); Lanzarote (78.81%); Tenerife in general (76.55%); Gran Canaria South (75.88%); Fuerteventura (75.62%) and Gran Canaria in general (73.43%). In view of these figures, it is no surprise that profitability rates of the Archipelago’s hotel business have made considerable progress. The average daily rate grew by 4.2% from last year to 87.5 euros in April, the highest figure in the sector throughout the country. Even greater was the increase in revenue per available room, which has risen above 16%, climbing last month to 71.7 euros. Hotel accommodation in the Archipelago swelled to 75.6% in April - well above the data recorded in the same month last year (68.6%) - while registered overnight stays totalled 5.36 million.

Cosby in dock over sex-assault charge VETERAN American comedian Bill Cosby has been ordered by a judge to stand trial over a 2004 sex assault allegation - the first criminal case against him out of dozens of similar claims.
He was in the Pennsylvania courtroom on Tuesday as a police report was read out, alleging that he drugged and sexuallyassaulted a woman who worked at his former university. The 78-year-old entertainer waved to people outside as he arrived for the hearing, but Andrea Constand, 43, who now lives in Canada, did not attend. She told authorities that Cosby gave her three pills at his suburban Philadelphia mansion, which left her dizzy, nauseated and blurry-eyed. In the 2005 police report, she said Cosby had told her the pills were herbal medication. He also urged her to have some wine, even though she said she didn’t want to drink. She told police her legs felt “rubbery” and “like
A TOMATO sector in Northern Nigeria has been declared a state of emergency, and all because of a moth!
It is known as the Tomato Leaf Miner, or Tuta Absoluta, and has ravaged 80% of tomato farms in the Kaduna state. The cost of a basket of tomatoes has increased from £1.20 less than three months ago to more than £40 today. And concerned Agriculture Commissioner
jelly”, adding: “Everything was blurry and dizzy. I felt nauseous.” Ms Constand also alleged that Cosby assaulted her as she drifted in and out of consciousness. She informed detectives that she awoke with her bra out of place, and did not remember undoing it. Cosby’s lawyers have questioned why Ms Constand continued to see him after the alleged assault, even returning to his home
near Philadelphia. More than 50 women have alleged sexual abuse by the former megastar, but this case is the only one to have gone to trial. Most of the other claims cannot be prosecuted because they have expired under statutes of limitation, and Cosby’s lawyers maintain the actor is innocent anyway. Cosby had previously said that he and Ms Constand engaged in consensual sexual ac-
tivities, and that he was a friend and mentor to her. Ms Constand, who was working for a basketball team at a Philadelphia university Cosby attended, said she had approached him for career advice. Cosby settled her lawsuit for an undisclosed sum in 2006, after giving four days of testimony about his extramarital affairs and how he had given the sedative drug quaaludes to women.
Another Olympic concern as Rio sailors are mugged YET another big cloud hangs over Brazil’s Olympics, following the armed mugging of three members of Spain´s sailing squad in Rio, where the Games are being staged this summer. A gang of five youngsters, two with pistols, descended on Olympic champion Fernando Echavarri Erasun, World and European champion Tara Pacheco and trainer Santi Lopez-Vazquez. The sailors, competing in the Nacra 17 catamaran class, were in Rio for training sessions, and, said Lopez-Vazquez: “It was a very unpleasant experience. “They took

all the work equipment we were carrying, and some money.” The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday morning police say Friday night - in the popular tourist spot of Santa Teresa. Fortunately, there were no heroics and no one was injured. A spokesman for Rio´s tourism police said: “A bag with money, documents and a camera were taken. “Civil police are working to identify the authors of the crime, and to recover the stolen objects.” But it adds to more concerns over safety at the Olympics, which
start in August. Security is one of the main concerns for organisers in a city where large working-class neighbourhoods, known as “favelas”, are considered off-limits to most tourists. A Zika alert, posted in Brazil recently, was dismissed by local Rio officials. But sailors have also raised fears about the high levels of pollution and floating rubbish in Guanabara Bay, which could hinder dinghy-racers and windsurfers. The flimsy racing dinghies and surf-boards could be impeded by plastic bags, catching on rudders or centre-
boards. Earlier this year, a part of the cycling track in Rio collapsed, killing two. In addition, heavilyarmed police engage in frequent shoot-outs with drug gangs. Muggings and gun-related crimes are also a regular occurrence in the wealthiest areas in the south of Rio. A Spanish Sailing Federation spokesperson said: “Lack of security in Rio is one of the points that worry the teams. “Fortunately, they did not suffer personal injury.” Overall, though, many are questioning Brazil´s credibility as a Games’ host.
Daniel Manzo Maigar said 200 farmers had lost at least £3.5m between them over the past month. Kaduna state has now sent agricultural officials to Kenya to meet experts on the Tomato Leaf Miner to learn how to deal with the pest. Kaduna is in the north of the country, where, according to the UN, most tomato production takes place. To press home the dearth, A tomato-paste manufacturing business in the northern Kano state, owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, suspended production earlier in the month through lack of tomatoes.
GOING BATTY DOWN UNDER AUSTRALIAN town Batemans Bay has been over-run by a swarming mass of 100,000 bats, and it’s in a “state of emergency”.
The problem is so bad that they are on almost every surface and in every tree. Danielle Smith, who lives in the plagued, New South Wales town, said: “I can’t open the windows; I can’t use the clotheslines. “I can’t study because the noise just goes constantly and I can’t concentrate - it’s no fun.” She added: “The bats are out of control and we just can’t do anything because of them.” Russell Schneider, of the Flying Fox Task Force, said: “This is the biggest ever - it is unprecedented. They’ve never before been seen
in these numbers.” A Task Force statement said many of the town’s residents felt “isolated, powerless, and had become prisoners in their own homes”. Officially, the greyheaded, flying foxes are listed as a vulnerable species, which means that authorities cannot kill them. Instead, they are considering deterring them by using smoke and noise. One approach under consideration is the clearing of all local vegetation, and officials have already started chopping down trees. Animal rights groups are insisting that patience is the only thing for it, saying the bats will move on of their own accord when ready. But people living in the town are desperate for a solution. As one person said: “They are causing a great deal of stress and distress.”

Youngsters are victims of an aggressive virus SIXTY children in Catalonia have fallen foul of an enterovirus, which can cause severe illness. of these youngsters, 29 were hospitalised after suffering a form of encephalitis, which causes inflammation of the brain stem and cerebellum.
Health authorities said most of the children were recovering well, although two remained in a serious condition. Similar outbreaks have been reported in Bulgaria, the US and several Asian countries. But this is the first time Spain has experienced so many cases at the same time. Enteroviruses are common at this time of the year, normally producing mild symptoms similar to the common cold or flu. But preliminary lab results for this particular outbreak suggested the presence of a more aggressive subtype, affect-
ing the central nervous system. Two days after issuing an alert, Catalan health authorities admitted that 21 children had been treated at regional hospitals for related symptoms. There is no known vaccine or prescription drug against the micro-organism. The first severe case of enterovirus was reported in February, when a three-year-old suffered a myelitis - an inflammation of the spinal cord - that has left her quadraplegic. But doctors said that she was infected by a different, even more virulent enterovirus called EV-D68, which can cause paralysis similar to polio. Experts have ruled out the presence of EVD68 in all 48 cases reported since 13th April, when the first case arrived at the emergency room of Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron Hospital. The child, who went into cardiac arrest, remains in hospital with “serious effects,” according to Carles Rodrigo, head of paediatrics at the hospital. Most of the other cases were reported this month. Another youngster,
in the Catalan province of Tarragona, has died with similar symptoms to those produced by enteroviruses, but health authorities have not included him in the present outbreak. Josep María Argimon, deputy director of the Catalan health services, CatSalut, said: “Although, clinically, he would be part of the group, we have been unable to detect the enterovirus in his samples. It is a probable case, but we are not certain.” Faced with an avalanche of concerned parents, doctors are stressing that most cases of enterovirus infections are benign. “The vast majority recover well,” said Rodrigo, but added that if a child had trouble breathing, swallowing or talking, along with a fever, parents should take him or her to see a doctor. Experts say it is difficult to foresee what will happen next. “It’s behaving differently from what we usually see, and it is hard to know what to expect,” said Rodrigo. “ We cannot predict how many more cases will emerge in future.”
Clouseau servant Kwouk dies at 85
BURT Kwouk, manservant Cato Fong to Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau and renowned for his maniacal attacks on him in the Pink Panther films, died on Tuesday at the age of 85. A statement said: “Beloved actor Burt Kwouk has sadly passed peacefully away 24th May. “The family will be having a private funeral, but there will be a memorial at a later date.” Kwouk was born in Warrington, Cheshire, but lived in Shanghai until he was 17. He started acting after attending college in the US and, in 1964, he was cast as the servant Kato, the spelling of which was later changed to Cato, in the second Inspector Clouseau comedy, A Shot In The Dark. The character became an instant hit with fans
as his quirky friendship with Clouseau - of servant, and sometimes crazed attacker - developed. A running gag throughout the films was that martial-arts specialist Cato would attack Clouseau at random, often at inopportune moments, to help keep him alert. Burt continued in the role following the death of Clouseau actor Peter Sellers in 1980. He also appeared in three James Bond films, playing Mr Ling, a Chinese expert in nuclear
fission, in Goldfinger, as a Spectre agent in You Only Live Twice, and as a Chinese general in the spoof Casino Royale. Kwouk was a regular character actor on the small screen, appearing in TV series such as The Avengers, Danger Man, Doctor Who, The Saint, The Kenny Everett Television Show and Last Of The Summer Wine. Later in his career, Kwouk joined Harry Hill’s eponymous TV show and become the face of Channel 4’s gaming show Banzai! Al Murray tweeted: “I was very lucky to have worked with Burt Kwouk on the Harry Hill show way back when. “Hey Little Hen, when when when?” He received an OBE for services to drama from Prince Charles in 2011.

An announcement was made by new London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who said: “The Night Tube is absolutely vital to my plans to support and grow London’s nighttime economy - creating more jobs and opportunities for all Londoners.” The 24-hour service, scheduled to start last year, was delayed because the unions could
not reach an agreement. But Transport for London (TfL) now says allnight operations will begin at weekends on the Central and Victoria lines. The night service - six trains an hour- will run on Fridays and Saturdays, from 12.30-5.30am. That will rise to eight trains hourly on the Northern line to meet demand at busy stations between Leicester Square and Camden Town. The Night Tube will be rolled out on the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines later in the autumn, when new Tube drivers have completed their training. Around 200 part-time
drivers are taking part in a 14-week training programme to implement the new service. Earlier this year, unions agreed a pay deal, bringing to an end the strikes which had forced the programme to grind to a halt. Drivers and other London Underground staff affected will receive a £500 bonus, and four years of above-inflation pay rises, back-dated from last April. The Mayor added: “The constant delays under the previous Mayor let Londoners down badly.” Mike Brown, London’s Transport Commissioner, said: “It is good news for London that the
first ever all-night Tube service will be ready on 19th August. More than half-a-million people use the Tube after 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays.” However, the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) is still in dispute with London Underground over conditions for engineers working on the new service. General Secretary Mick Cash, said: “RMT still has major concerns over the safe running of the Night Tube, and there are unresolved issues on the detailed safety case that will have to be agreed through the health and safety machinery.”
Tragic schoolkids are killed in blaze AS many as 18 under-privileged girls died in a fire, which swept through the dormitory of a live-in school in northern Thailand.
The blaze started at about 11pm on Sunday, and the girls perished as they slept in the private Pitakiatwittaya Christian elementary school in Thailand.
Five other girls were injured - two of them seriously - and two are still missing, said Police Colonel Prayad Singsin, Commander of Vingpatao district in Chiang Rai. Arkom Sukapan, the province’s deputy governor said: “There were 38 students inside the dormitory when the fire broke out. Some were not asleep, so they escaped. “But others who were
sleeping could not escape, resulting in the large number of casualties.” The school, which belongs to a local charity foundation, is home to girls aged between five and 12. And it is understood that many of the pupils are from impoverished hill tribes in the mountainous region, who receive free education and accommodation. Police chief Singsin said the fire was even-
tually extinguished, but the cause was still being investigated by forensic officers. Firefighters on ladders scaled the building walls and rescued a number of children, said fireunit chief Sawang Momdee, who led the operation. “We were trying to save everyone through the window, but the fire spread very quickly,” he added. “We have done our best.”
The latest example of this is a short, red coat the Duchess of Cambridge purchased for 50 euros from Spanish fashion giant Zara. This item went out of stock two days after she wore it to an event to celebrate The Queen’s 90th birthday. A few minutes after the Duchess appeared at the Windsor Horse Show wearing the coat - over a 6,000-euro white Dolce & Gabbana dress - sales of the item spiked. This massive imitation of the princess’ style is possible because she often picks out low-cost clothes,
affordable to millions. This is not the first time Kate has shopped at Zara. A 19-euro short necklace she purchased there, to go along with a Rolland Mouret dress, also sold out within hours. The ripple effect extends to her entire family, and her children have also become fashion trend-setters. A 34euro white bathrobe worn by Prince George during an official visit to Kensington Palace by US President Barack Obama, flew off the shelves. The same thing happened with a newborn outfit by Spanish brand Neck and Neck, which George wore when he came out of the hospital. Other European royals also resort to lowcost brands to complete their wardrobes. In Spain, Queen Letizia routinely shops at Massimo Dutti, Mango and Zara.

LETTING AGREEMENTS
By Mariano Zunino Siri
ONE of our readers has written to me with a few questions regarding the legalities surrounding the letting of apartments. Dear Sir, I have a two bedroom apartment and I’m thinking of letting it out on either a holiday or long-term basis, but I need some clarification. *What happens if I use a third party to look after my dealings. *What legal requirements should I look for from a company? *What happens if they don’t pay me? *What bank statements
do I receive to know they are banking the deposits, or rent, correctly? You are free to let your apartment according to the provisions of the Letting Agreement Act (or the Civil Code). If you are renting the apartment on a holiday basis, you must take into account the Tourism Law of Canary Islands (Law 7/1995), which regulates jurisdiction assumed by Article 30.21 of the Statute of Autonomy of the Canary Islands in Tourism matters). I wrote several articles in Canarian Weekly in connection with this matter and its last amendment (Decree 113/2015 of 22nd May of Vacational Houses, has been active since 29th May 2015). First question: you can use the services of a third party to deal with your businesses. This legal relationship can
be regulated as Agency Contract, Mandatory Contract or Commission Contract. This third party could be a natural person or a company. Second question: It is recommended that you have a written agreement to regulate the duties and rights of every party (owner and agency), and that you keep the control of the written letting agreements: who are the tenants? What are the monthly payments?
Strong growth in business services THE turnover of business services in the Canaries in March grew by 6.4% over the same month in 2015, a period in which the employment in this sector increased by 3.5%, according to data released by the INE. In the whole country, the turnover of the service sector in March increased 3.4% against the same month last year, some 1.2% higher than the rate recorded in February. And positive figures were recorded in all communities, especially in Galicia and the Balearic Islands. According to the in-
dicator of activity in the service sector, published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), Galicia (8.3%), Balearic Islands (8.0%) and Murcia (6.9%) were the autonomies with the highest gains. Meanwhile, Castilla-La Mancha (0.2%) and Asturias (0.3%) registered the smallest increases. So far this year, the
biggest rise was also recorded in Galicia (9%) and the Balearic Islands (8%), followed by Murcia (5.8%) and Valencia (5.5%). With regard to employment in the sector, it increased overall by 2.4% in March, compared with the same month last year, and 10% lower than the February rate recorded.
Canaries’ wages lagging THE average Canarian wage is falling further behind the rest of Europe. While the ordinary, gross-average wage in the 28 countries of the European Union is 1,995 euros per month, the Canary equivalent is nowhere near. It stands at 1,402 euros monthly, which is 29.7% lower, and represents a difference of 593 euros per month,
according to the IV Annual Wage Adecco Monitor. But despite the disadvantage, those Canarian wages are actually around the middle of the pay league. There are 15 countries in which average wages are below the Canarian pay packets, while the remaining 12 have higher salaries. Of the 28 EU countries, 11 countries
have an average wage of under 1,000 euros per month: Portugal (986 euros) - the only one in Western Europe - and the rest, in Eastern Europe, are: Bulgaria (357 euros), Romania (453) Lithuania (527), Hungary (543), Latvia (601), Poland (686) Czech Republic (758), Slovakia (774), Croatia (782) and Estonia (798 euros).
Their obligation to leave the property in good condition, etc. Third question: if they do not pay you, the renters would be in breach of contract. I assume that you refer to the case when the lessee is paying you directly, and you pay the agency´s fees. If the tenant does not pay, you can take him to Court, evict him and force him to pay the rent. If you mean that the agency doesn’t pay you (because the agent
is allowed to collect your monies), he would be legally binding to give you your payments, keeping his fee (if the agreement states that). You can also take him to Court and, logically, stop any dealings with him. Fourth question: I understand that the monthly rent would be paid into your bank account on an agreed date. Bear in mind that there is a tax duty to declare the income in your return tax (as resident or as nonresident). Regarding any deposits held by the company renting for you, they will have deposited these funds into a separate bank account purely for deposits. This is a legal requirement and gives peace of mind to the renter and the owner. In any case, to have a lessee is always a risk, especially if you have a
rebel tenant who does not pay the rent but remains in the house. It means you have to sue him in order to get him evicted (and recover the monies). And in the meantime (until the eviction), you won’t even be sure of recovering your money anyway. The matter of letting agreements in Canary Islands is an extensive subject involving different rules, depending on the cases (Letting Agreement Law, Civil Code, Canary Tourism Law), without taking into account the taxation (for residents and nonresidents). I will be back to this topic in future columns and will be glad to receive readers’ queries. Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer, registered at the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. ‘Our financial nightmare’
THE present century has been an economic disaster for most Canarian families, according to a study by the BBVA Foundation and the Valencian Economic Research Institute.
Under the title “Income distribution, economic crisis and redistributive policies”, it reveals that disposable household income in the Canary Islands fell more than 20% between 2003 and 2013. This decade, comprising both the boom and bust years, proved to be a financial nightmare for islanders, who had an average of 22,695 euros for spending and some sav-
ings in 2003, and saw that figure reduced to 17,980 euros 10 years later. This total was the lowest average of all regions, There were four regions with lower totals 10 years earlier: Andalucia, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla-Leon and Extremadura. One of the conclusions of the study, led by Professor of Economic Analysis, Francisco Goerlich, is that the burden of the crisis fell heavily on the most disadvantaged people. While the fall in disposable income of families is widespread throughout the islands, with the exception of the Basque Country, which enjoys a different taxation, between 2003 and 2007 the average disposable income per household grew, in real terms, by 6.6%. But in the next six
years, until 2013 - the last available figures – there was a fall of 19.6%. As a result, the standard of living in the average household in 2013 was 14.3% below the level reached in 2003, but from the perspective of 20.78% Canarians who lost their homes, it was an enviable average. The truth is that the conclusions of this study into the collapse of social justice, from an economic perspective in Spain, could not be more alarming. The study sums it up, saying: “The economic crisis has seen a considerable decline in living standards of Spanish society, as measured by per capita income. This decline has set back households by more than a decade, placing them at the last levels of the late century.”

International Football Friendly ITV1, 19.30
Mark Pougatch introduces live coverage of England’s friendly against Australia live from the Stadium of Light in Sunderland. England have only met Australia once before on home soil - a 3-1 defeat at Upton Park in 2003. It was a landmark occasion though, as 17-year-old Wayne Rooney made his international debut, becoming the youngest player ever to represent England. Roy Hodgson may use the match to finetune his squad’s plans for France with their opening match against Russia just over a fortnight after this one.Mark is joined in the studio by Lee Dixon and Ian Wright, with commentary from Clive Tyldesley and Glenn Hoddle, and Gabriel Clarke the pitchside reporter.

Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying Highlights. Steve Jones presents highlights of qualifying from the Monaco Grand Prix: the tightest, least forgiving track on the calendar, where overtaking is difficult, making qualifying even more crucial. Current world champion Lewis Hamilton had never had a pole here until 2015, but was left disconsolate after the race when a misjudged pit stop under the safety car gifted Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg a third straight Monaco win. This year, however, both Mercedes drivers need to recover from a disastrous race in Barcelona, where neither car finished. Meanwhile, Red Bull and youngest ever GP winner Max Verstappen will be hoping to capitalise on a great day in Spain and get a good position on the grid. Assistant Ed: Steve Aldous; Ed: Mark Wilkin.
The Secrets Of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony BBC2, 21.00
Presenter Ian Hislop and conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner explore the story behind the German composer’s most famous symphonic work. Often cited as one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, the opening notes of the fifth symphony are among the most recognisable in the history of music, but the inspiration behind it is less clear. Many believe that Beethoven was railing against fate and his deafness in this piece, which was composed in Vienna between 1804 and 1808. In this documentary Gardiner argues that the music features a little-known, radical message expressing Beethoven’s belief in the ideals of the French Revolution, and shows how his Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique convey that message in their performance of the Fifth Symphony. To investigate Gardiner’s theory, Hislop visits the German city of Bonn, where Beethoven was born, raised and exposed to radical ideas, and Paris, where a new wave of composers were creating original compositions in a musical revolution that mirrored the political movement of the era. He also goes to Vienna, where the composer lived from 1792, visiting the apartment where he wrote the bulk of his Fifth Symphony and the Theater an der Wien, where the premiere of the work took place in 1808. This is part of the BBC’s Revolution & Romance - Soundtrack To The 19th Century season this May and June, exploring the surge of musical creativity and the key players to emerge during this seminal era of music, revealing the real inspiration behind Beethoven’s most famous work, and with complementary programming on BBC Radio 3 in Essential Classics.

Wallander and his colleagues discover a middle-aged woman’s body half-buried in the forest swamp. As they search the victim’s home, it becomes clear there has been an intruder - and more disturbingly, that the victim’s teenage daughter is missing. The search for the missing girl leads Wallander down a treacherous path, towards some bikers who have been causing a stir in the local area. Wallander feels increasingly threatened by one of them in particular and begins to suspect that he’s being followed. The return of a long-lost love provides Wallander with a much-needed distraction, but, just as we think Wallander may finally prioritise his personal life, an unexpected shadow starts to haunt him…

Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport ITV1, 21.00 A new season of the documentary series that goes behind-the-scenes at Britain’s biggest and busiest international airport; Heathrow. This episode explores the unexpected divisions of Heathrow such as their own dedicated police force, paramedics and animal reception centre. Airline employees face the common dilemma of missing passengers on a departing flight and search through the departure lounge before they incur large penalties. Air traffic controllers attempt to ensure a smooth run of departures and arrivals which occur every 45 seconds. PC’s Claire and Steve cooperate with airport staff to detain two individuals attempting to board flights who are wanted for arrest. While Heathrow’s security officers share an interesting insight into the obstacles they face when searching 200,000 carry-on bags a day. Veteran Demi assists new Terminal Manager Callum as they manage a major weather disruption at the airport during one of their busiest weeks of the year. The airside safety team are on high alert as more than 50 flights are cancelled, and the added pressure of ensuring safe departures and arrivals falls to them as the pilots struggle to conduct basic manoeuvres. Heathrow’s own vets show us the strict regulations they must abide by when allowing animals into the country as two dogs from Kenya are eager to be reunited with their owner as she relocates back to the UK. A look at the Emirates Premium Lounge shows no expense is spared in ensuring customer satisfaction with countless bottles of champagnes as passengers have spent up to fourteen times the price of economy being prepared for a flight to the USA.

An Immigrant’s Guide to Britain Channel 4, 22:00 Comedian Henning Wehn and his gang of first-generation immigrants present a new series providing an irreverent guide to life in Britain, through a mixture of reports, sketches and hidden camera experiments. Britain can be a confusing place to settle in, with its culture, whims and inhabitants seeming a little odd to a new resident. So how best to integrate? In this first episode, Henning reveals how to understand what Brits really mean when they tell someone their ‘presentation was fantastic’ and that you ‘always love having them around’, and Hungarian Veronika works out whether it’s possible to keep a Brit talking about the weather for the best part of an afternoon. From the big issues to the almost overlooked minutiae of British life that we take for granted, this unique sketch show sheds a mischievous light on life in Britain.

Myleene Klass: Single Mums on Benefits ITV1, 21.00 In this new documentary for ITV, Myleene Klass investigates the truth about single mums who receive benefits and asks whether it really is a life of Riley, or a life on the breadline. Myleene, who is never far from the public eye as a TV presenter and performer, considers being one of Britain’s two million single parents to be her most important job. Raising her two girls Ava and Hero alone was never her plan, and she struggles with a stigma she feels is still attached to her single mother status. She meets a teenage mother and compares notes with a group of single dads. She interviews an older mum who chose to have her children alone, and has an emotional meeting with a single father who had no choice after tragically losing his wife. In this programme, she hopes to uncover why single mums feel like they get such a hard time. She says: “When I read the headlines about single mums on benefits, living the high life, refusing to work, it makes me, like everyone else, furious. These stories do nothing to help the image of single parents everywhere, leaving [us] all feeling tarred with the same brush. So I want to find out the truth behind the headlines and meet the mums that some say are giving us all a bad name.” Myleene starts her journey by speaking to self-proclaimed ‘Welfare Queen’ Marie Buchan, an unemployed single mother of eight children who caused outrage when she publicly declared her £26,000 benefits weren’t enough. Marie says getting the benefits is a simple process: “You obviously have a baby, you send off the application form, birth certificate, they assess it and then you’ve got your money in your account. It is very easy - it is - and then to obviously go in the property as well which a lot of people have said, ‘Oh she’s only had all them kids to get a big house.’” In Margate, Myleene meets teen mum Becky and her son, together with 26-year-old Kate who became a single parent at 18 and says she understands the judgement young mums can face. Kate says: “I was 17 when I first fell pregnant and 18 when I had her, I just felt alone, a lot of my friends weren’t bothered, they just didn’t want to know to be honest. But I feel like I did get frowned upon by the elderly, they used to look at me like I shouldn’t be pregnant, they used to tut and roll their eyes, bit judgemental, but hey that’s life isn’t it.” Myleene heads to North Wales to stay with 43-year-old single mother Rhiannon, who is struggling to make ends meet on benefits and is crippled by the isolation of being a lone parent to three children aged from seven to 17. Rhiannon relies on state benefits after being made redundant and losing the family home shortly after her marriage broke down, and now looks after her trio of children and her grandmother in a rented house. She says: “It’s a bridge for now. You almost feel like it’s a failure. The children are growing up - I don’t own my home any more and I’m not working any more and to a degree you get a little bit embarrassed about it.” Myleene goes to Essex to meet 38-year-old transport consultant Catherine, who chose to become a single mother. She spent her twenties travelling and building a successful career in the capital, at that time any thoughts of having children were a long way off. Catherine’s fertility results meant that conceiving naturally was very unlikely. If she was to have a baby she would need IVF. She made a bold decision to go it alone using donor sperm from a private clinic - and her twin girls Phoebe and May arrived in February 2015. Despite her parents’ reservations, she says she is content as a working mum, despite the perceived stigma against single parents. She says: “I did have to come to terms with the fact that I would be a single mum statistic. There is a judgement, there is negativity, something to look down upon a little bit I suppose. There’s always that you’ve done something wrong because I was voluntarily putting myself in that situation.” Having met a range of individuals across the spectrum of single parenthood, Myleene says: ”I can hand on my heart say I have re-assessed how I feel about being a single mum, I used to be afraid of the term ‘single mum’, I felt like I had failed my children and now I feel like I have ownership of the words single mum and I’m really proud of it.”

Britain & Europe: For Richer Or Poorer? BBC2, 21.00
This summer, the UK faces a momentous choice: are we in or out of the European Union? As the vote nears, the BBC’s Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg tackles the big questions at the heart of the debate: would we be richer or poorer as a nation if we left, and what are the costs and benefits of staying in? She will talk to leading politicians and business big hitters on both sides, and set out to discover what leaving would really mean for trade and jobs, for red tape and the pound in your pocket. She will set out the facts about the UK’s contribution to the EU budget as well as the rebate – and she will take the debate to the public about whether we’re better off in or out. The EU referendum is set to shape our future as a nation: this film is your impartial, indispensable guide to a decision which matters to us all.

Secrets of Growing Old ITV1, 21.00
We’re all living longer - at least one baby born this year will likely reach 150. So what we think of as ‘old’ is changing. While we’re often told that we can be as young as we feel, science is now proving this has never been truer. We unravel the extraordinary secrets of ageing - discovering for example that a staggering 80% of the way we age is down to how we choose to live our lives - so that you never view ‘growing old’ in the same way again. We’ll meet people who turn our preconception of what’s ‘old’ on its head: from those who break world athletics records at 96 to those whose age enables them to earn hundreds of thousands of pounds; from an 82-year-old whose brain is only now providing him a new burst of creativity, to those who prove - no matter what age we are – that love never dies. Each revealing that the aches and creaks of ageing are far outweighed by the benefits of growing old. Scientists think that 1 in 5 of us will live to be a hundred - but for most of us it’s not the quantity that matters, but the quality of our extra years. Take 83-year-old Dilys Price, who at age 50, when her joints began to ache, thought that proved the beginning of the end. Instead of giving in she turned daredevil and is now the world’s oldest skydiver. Dilys recalls: “In my middle age I thought life was very difficult and hard. I remember when I was 50 thinking ‘Is this life? Is this the beginning of the end?’. My knees were stiffer, I didn’t feel very happy. Then I thought ‘If my knees hurt, I must live a life through my head’. Oddly enough, as I thought that, my knees got better.” Of her first skydiving experience, Dilys remembers: “I was terrified, I could see the ground and was thinking ‘What a mistake. This is death’. It’s unnatural, you shouldn’t be doing it. Then the next moment I thought ‘Wow, I’m flying’ and it was wonderful.” Daredevil Dilys has jumped over 1,100 times, saying: “I found my passion. As far as I’m concerned, I’m just Dilys doing whatever excites me. Now I’m the oldest woman in the world skydiving. It’s great.” 96-year-old Charles Eugster is an amazing example of what scientists call our ‘biological age’. Overweight and unfit in middle age he’s transformed his body – by being active he’s actually keeping himself young on the inside and now has the body of a man 30 years younger.

How to Get a Council House Channel 4, 22:50
Almost two million households in the UK are waiting for a council house but, with a severe social housing shortage, more and more people on low incomes have to find a home in the private sector. In London demand is high, rents are spiralling and some landlords are taking advantage. More and more people are living in substandard conditions in houses of multiple occupancy, and even in a growing number of sheds and garages cheaply converted into accommodation for maximum profit. The council can only help those most in need, while battling to improve the living conditions of those they can’t rehouse. Shayne is living in a cramped bedsit, which he says he can only access by climbing through a window.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke
We still love Robin COSTA del Silencio is normally one of our early TLK ports of call, but this year it has taken until now to arrive there, as we did last Sunday when we headed to the Albatross Bar, another new venue. It was obvious from the song choices and the party atmosphere that the penultimate heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke would be entertaining, a lot of fun - and hard for the judges! We were not disappointed. Gordon Slaney, from Oasis Fm, hosted the event, and the judging panel comprised Albatross Bar owner Don, Sammy, representing the bar, Dave from Oasis Fm and Mandy Scott from Showtime. With a full complement of singers, the night got under way with our first singer Dave, who chose the Frank Sinatra karaoke classic My Way. He gave his all, and, right from the off, the crowd were encouraging, supportive and extremely noisy. Next to entertain was TLK heat regular Angie, who chose the Texas classic I Don’t Want a Lover. Stash followed and,
to everyone surprise, he not only managed to get to the stage but also finished one of the longest Karaoke songs (8min 10sec) with his version of Meat Loaf ’s Bat Out Of Hell. It was an entertaining performance, which got the crowd going even more. Fourth-up Louie selected a great party song to keep this superb atmosphere going - Hey Baby, by DJ Otzi. The 13-year-old delivered it well and, had there been an award for getting everyone dancing, she would definitely have won. The task of following Louie fell to Liza who sang a well-controlled performance of Jess Glynne’s Rather Be, to the crowd’s pleasing. Dave filled in for the fifth spot with another Frank Sinatra song, Let Me Try Again. Next up was Janet, another TLK 2016 regular, who performed the Eta James classic At Last, again confidently. Natalie, who has been on the Island just a few months, took to the stage next, and it was like the party would never end. She went for Wilson Pickett karaoke favourite Mustang Sally, giv-
ing it her all. And from the off, the gathered throng chimed in with “Ride, Sally, Ride” - and they didn’t stop! Keith kicked off the second half and chose the heat’s third Sinatra song, The Lady Is a Tramp. Needless to say, the crowd were appreciative. Amy was next to go and, to the crowd’s delight, sang Sandi Thom’s I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker, which got the audience back on their feet and eager for more. Billy went for Dean Martin’s Volare and produced a stunning rendition, demonstrating his desire to reach the Final. Cristina, who also hasn’t been here long, and was supporting a broken arm, sang Crystal Gayle’s Don’t It
Make My Brown Eyes Blue. With three singers left, Tracey was next to get the audience back on their feet with a brilliant but unusual Karaoke song, A Thousand Years, by Christina Perri. This was performed beautifully, with supreme stage presence - and everyone loved it! Robin, our penultimate contestant, who reached the 2014 Final, choose Eva Cassidy’s version of Imagine and delivered a beautiful performance. But was it enough to ensure her second final? Last but not least was Jack, and, after a song change, he chose Ed Sheeran’s Photograph a fine way to finish this part of the evening. The computer scoring whirred into action and delivered our
Saulo’s flying ‘Talent’ flag for the Canaries
By Stefania Roberto I’M sure you haven’t failed to notice that our TV screens have been filled with a video of one, extremely talented, attractive male aerial acrobat after his eyecatching performance on Britain’s Got Talent. Not only did he grab the attention of the judges, but of the whole nation as well. And we are proud to have Saulo Sarmiento hailing from our little islands in the Atlantic. Saulo, born on our sister island of Gran Canaria in 1987, has shot to fame in recent years with his gymnastic and aerial-dance talents, working for companies such as Cirque du Soleil
and the Franco Dragone entertainment group. We had the pleasure of meeting the wonder boy himself a couple of times in 2012 after his prestigious “Pole Art” competition victory when he travelled to Tenerife to perform at Loro Parque’s 40th anniversary show spectacular. We were even hon-
oured to have him teach Pole tricks during workshops in our studio, and get up close and personal with his training techniques. With such a gruelling training regime, it’s no wonder he makes all his routines seem so effortless, and you can’t help but see the passion and enthusiasm radiate when you’re near him.
His training began at the age of 13, when he became part of the Canarian gymnastics team. At 18, he travelled away from the Canaries to pursue his artistic training, which included disciplines such as Chinese Pole, Pole Dance, Aerial Straps and, more recently, his new “Aerial Pole” speciality, which you may have seen on BGT. Saulo has also worked as a solo performer, in duos and group acts. If you’d like another dose of Saulo, you’ll find many mesmerising videos of him, on his own or with dance partner Anna de Carvalho, on YouTube and other online sources.
three finalists - Tracey, Billy and Robin - to the crowd’s delight. Tracey selected Céline Dion’s I’m Alive, and sang it really well - and everyone was back in the room! Billy, drawn second, chose Mambo Italiano, another Dean Martin classic, complete with hat, and he delivered it well - and in two languages! Robin showed great versatility with her Sixties’ sing-off number, The Shirelles’ Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, in which she demonstrated not only perfect pitch and a richness of voice, but also a well-controlled performance. The standard was again very high and the audience were thoroughly entertained from start to finish. A diverse set of songs made judging difficult, and first, second and third places were separated by just one point. But the results soon followed and Robin was announced as Heat 13 winner, booking her place in another Tenerife Loves Karaoke Final. Like all other Karaoke rounds, it was a fun night with wonderful support for the entrants, creating the
perfect atmosphere for them. As always, huge congratulations go to all the performers, and those who came along to contribute to these outstanding entertainment nights. This year’s competition is proudly sponsored by Bombay Babu Authentic Indian Tandoori Restaurants, which has three perfect places to enjoy the best Indian food in Tenerife: Torviscas Playa, Callao Salvaje and their latest restaurant in La Tejita commercial centre, between Los Abrigos to El Medano. Bombay Babu also offers a full take-away and free delivery service - call 922 705 092 or go on-line at bombaybabu.com There’s still time to compete in the final heat, which is open to everyone who’s 13 or over, as well as every nationality and to anyone who has entered before. But do hurry because the final heat takes place tonight (Friday) at Leonardos, in Las Americas. Call Oasis Fm on 902 232 102, register at Leonardos, or at facebook oasisfm Tenerife.

Candelaria’s saintly status
By Vanessa Vee WE decided to trot up the TF-1 to Candelaria, a beautiful, coastal area situated on Tenerife’s northeast coast, where, daily, coach-loads of tourists visit this sleepy, little Canarian village.
It is steeped in history, which makes it so pleasing to experience something other than the popular tourist spots. With no British bars or restaurants in sight, there are many small Spanish cafe-bars - and a few restaurants - dotted around. They serve Canarian cuisine, mainly, and there is a chance to sample the fresh, catch-of-the-day. Candelaria is an important pilgrim site. Many of its visitors come to the Basilica to see the shrine of the Black Ma-
donna, the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, who is patron saint of the Canary Islands. Every year, on 15th August, the Fiesta of Candelaria takes place, and this is one of the most important days in Tenerife, with thousands of visitors arriving for the celebrations. The Guanches - the native name for Tenerife people - were prevalent in the 15th Century, when a statue of the Virgin was found by goat-
herders. It was taken, originally, to the palace of the Guanche king, and revered as the Guanche goddess Chaxiraxi (mother of the gods). When the Conquistadors arrived, they decided it was a statue of the Virgin Mary, and constructed a hermitage, later replaced by the Basilica. The Basilica is considered to be the main temple in the Canaries, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In addition to reli-
gious visitors, the building also attracts dozens of art enthusiasts, who come for the impressive architecture of the church, and the large collection of paintings on display inside. If you’re not into religious buildings or art, the village’s main beach may suit. Sporting Tenerife’s typical, black, volcanic sand, this beach is an ideal place to chill-out in the sunshine, or splash about in the waves.
Along the seafront, by the Basilica courtyard, there are statues of Guanche chiefs. The Guanches were the native people of the islands, before the Spanish Conquest, and these statues are HUGE - probably like nothing you have ever seen before. Visit www.tenerifesunshine.com to take a fullyguided tour to Candelaria. Alternatively, call 922 751 867 to reserve your
place, or email info@tenerifesunshine.com. This week, The Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team have a great offer for a 3-night break - at a 4-star hotel - in the Las Calletillas area, next to Candelaria. From only 110 euros per person, for two people sharing one room on a half-board basis this June, email travel@tenerifesunshine.com for more information and reservations.

THERE are many laws and rules applicable to driving, which have implications for either fines or sanctions, and some of them are obvious, such as using a mobile phone while driving, or using radar-detector devices.
Using a mobile phone, either normally or on speaker-phone, is illegal because it causes drivers to be distracted from other vehicles around them, and potential road hazards lane closures, accidents, pedestrians, etc, to name a few.
The in-ear devices, although previously permitted, are no longer legal, and the only lawful method of using a mobile phone in a vehicle is with a bluetooth connection. It’s the method used by police, and is built into their helmets. This offence carries a 200-euro fine and the loss of three points from your licence. The best thing to do is to ignore your phone while driving, set it to silent or turn it off, and return any calls when you stop. This type of distraction is one of the major causes for road-traffic collisions, because even a second’s distraction while driving can be fatal. The use of a radar detector, though not too common in Tenerife, results in a 6,000-euro fine, and six points off your licence. And there’s no discount available, as most other fines have if paid within the specific time limit, so beware it could be a very costly experience.
Some of the newer GPS devices have information which shows the drivers where “fixed” cameras are located. This information is provided directly and freely from the DGT, with the intention of encouraging drivers to slow down. This information shown on such devices is permitted. But the fine for im-
proper use of detectors is 200 euros and, again, a loss of three points. As with mobile-phone use, the aim is to reduce accidents and subsequent casualties. There is an 80-euro fine (but no points’ loss) for failing to carry the correct emergency equipment: the mandatory two warning triangles, a reflective jacket
for each occupant, and a spare wheel (along with the necessary tools to change the damaged tyre) or a puncture repair kit. It is no longer mandatory for you to carry a spare set of bulbs. And you no longer need to have a spare set of spectacles, if you wear them. However, it is advisable to do so for your own
safety on the latter item. Most responsible, loving animal owners, would never dream of taking their pets in the car unless they were secure and safe. Yet many people drive with animals on their laps, or unsecured in the back or front of the vehicle. Not only is this dangerous for the animal, but it could also interfere with your driving. The same applies to animals in cages and boxes, which must be secured safely. The fine for failing to do this is 80 euros, although no loss of points apply. Worst of all, as most pet-owners know, animals can be unpredictable, get excited or even nervous and, if loose, could interfere with the driver’s ability or visibility in the event of a crash. That, in turn, could cause suffering for the animal - or even death. It is always better to be safe than sorry … and out of pocket!

Not so hot on school meals THE quality and service of comedor meals supplied publicly have long been a standing joke … and it seems that the standard is not improving. Following a damning story in a Spanish news-
paper, which showed its service in a very poor light, catering company Newrest has defended its service. The story said that Santa Cruz police had investigated alleged irregularities and had observed
the improper transfer of school meals on 10th May. It was alleged that cold and hot food were incorrectly stored, managed and transferred. Police stopped the delivery truck and alerted the Health De-
partment, who sent experts to the scene. The report claims: “The transfer of goods from one vehicle to another on public roads is an operation that is illegal under general food law, unless it is done under con-

ditions which respect the food’s security”. In essence, among other violations, the vehicles transporting the food didn’t display good hygiene, while the chilled vehicle’s cooling equipment did not work. Also, the driver became nervous and didn’t offer any paperwork when asked to provide the requested documentation for the Ministry of Health. But the company defended its driver and the standards, saying: “The truck has a transport certificate that regulates the temperature. Each and every one of the deliveries is accompanied by a note, in which the supplier says where the food is meant to go - and what it is. “Also, the temperature records of the food once
it leaves the caterers are regulated.” Newrest, with over 50 contacts in various parts of Tenerife, is responsible for preparing 4,600 meals daily. The caterer recognises there “was an irregularity: eight sandwiches, 30 breakfasts, and a yoghurt were not placed inside the mandatory, isothermal container on 10th May”. The company adds: “We proceeded to renew the transportation of food to ensure that our drivers know and meet the procedures for every food.” A Public Health spokesperson said that an inspection of the premises of the company, based in the South of the Island, would be conducted soon.

The Swan, Parque Margarita
True home from home WE went for a lovely lunchtime option this week, instead of our normal evening meal, dining at The Swan, in Parque Margarita, Los Cristianos.
It is run, successfully, under the family ownership of Angela, Tony and Anthony. This is a no-fuss establishment just amazing-tasting food, making you feel more
than welcome, serving good-quality, homemade pub-grub. At the head chef ’s suggestion, we shared the Combo starters. These came as a mouth-watering platter of chicken goujons, onion rings, samosas, crispy wedges and juicy, bread-crumbed mushrooms, with sidepots of garlic mayo, sweet chilli, and Texan, barbeque sauces. Beef Wellington was to follow, and one of the daily specials poached cod, stuffed
with prawns and herb cream cheese. The Beef Wellington consisted of light, crispy pastry, rich pate and succulent fillet steak. The combination was amazing, and the meat so tender. The fish was light and fresh, and came with seasonal vegetables - and a choice of potatoes. For simple, no-frills food, it is definitely 5* quality. The Swan has lots of other specialities with a 24-hour pre-order,
such as lamb shanks or fish paella - one of the chef ’s personal favourites. He likes to exercise his creativity with a variety of sauces, for different fish and meats. Fancy something in particular? Just ask! Finally, he managed to tempt us with a dessert to share: warm and moist chocolate brownies, served with vanilla ice-cream, and cream. Our arms
were twisted, honestly! Not forgetting the little ones, the children’s menu has the kids’ traditional favourites, with smaller-sized portions of any meal from the main menu, plus colouring and games in the bar, to keep them entertained. The Swan supplies a nice range of house - and known-brand – wines, to go with your meals, such as Torres and Echo Falls.
The cocktail list was impressive - ideal to sip, while sitting on the terrace watching the entertainment at 9pm every evening. You can also find all the televised games and sporting fixtures to keep everyone happy. What more could you ask? The Swan is open from 10am ‘til late, with food served until 8pm. To reserve a table, call 602 601 634.

Babies’ health is up in smoke
ERASE … AND START AGAIN? By Carl Pattison
By Val Sainsbury
AFTER being consulted by a new client about a colour service she wanted for her hair, I asked myself one thing.
IT is a well-known fact that smoking during pregnancy can create many problems for unborn babies.
Why, after such a lengthy consultation on the whys and why-nots of her chosen colour, did all the information I supplied - free of charge - simply not register with her? When I am asked to carry out a service, which I know will end in tears - or will not look good on leaving the salon - the answer always has to be “No”. Not just for my sake, but the client’s, too. We all know how good news travels, but bad news gets around even faster. And there is nothing some people like more than a good hair-salon tale of disaster. My refusal to do the work wasn’t taken too well, so it was performed in another salon, and the results weren’t anything like the client had wanted. Instead of a light-brown shade, fading to blonde, I saw a whole head of dry, darkginger hair. I explain to any client,
It can be quite distressing to see expectant women enjoying cigarettes, because, for decades, the damage that smoking can cause has been documented widely. A recent study has now revealed that these children have an increased risk of developing schizophrenia. Researchers found that the more women were exposed to nicotine, the greater chance they had of having a child affected new or regular, that we do not have a hair-colour eraser, and we can deal only with what is present now, and what has been applied before. Saying No to a client’s wishes isn’t easy, but it’s better for me - in the long run - than a colour that has not turned out correctly, and which can be around for years. The client is now complaining of severe dryness, and hopes that all can be resolved with a
masque, after refusing to have any hair cut off. I would rather explain the ins and outs, and then it’s up to the client to decide, regarding a chosen colour. As stylists, we have a reputation to think of, and not what’s going in the till. So, the next time you’re asking for a cut or colour change, listen to your faithful stylist, who should be giving you nothing but free, confidential advice.
Chanel’s No.1 for me By Carl Pattison
IT’S not often that something endures as much as one of my favourite designers, someone who changed the face - and lifestyles - of those fashionistas, many years ago.
I’m talking, of course, about the one-and-only Coco Chanel, whose empire turns 100 this year. Most of us may never have owned one of her most-stylish items, but I’m sure that, in every woman’s wardrobe, there’s something that has been influenced by the House of Chanel. Starting in the French
town of Deauville, she had a small, but prosperous, business. With ranges of clothing, as well as makeup, jewellery and perfume, everything she touched oozed style. And she has acquired over 300 stores, worldwide. With Karl Lagerfeld as Creative Designer and the late Alexandra McQueen as Chief Designer, the brand still holds the fashion crown. Now worth over 6.7 billion dollars, and, with over 1,500 employees, it continues to strive. Known for the Little Black Dress and Chanel No.5, the company has always pushed fashion to its limits. Women would kill for the Chanel signature,
wool-check suits, with gold buttons and handbags. The brand name will still be around for many years, So it’s Happy Birthday to Chanel. The fashion world would be a duller place without it.
by this severe mental illness. Signs of heavy nicotine exposure in a mother’s blood were associated with a 38% increased likelihood of the condition. Scientists analysed data on 1,000 schizophrenic patients, and matched their birth and health records with those of non-affected “control” individuals. They assessed their smoking habits, by looking at levels of a nicotine marker, cotinine, in their blood. Based on this measurement, 20% of mothers of schizophrenia patients were found to have smoked heavily while pregnant, compared with 14.7% of “control” mothers. Smoking when expecting is known to contribute to significant problems in the uterus - and
following birth - including low birth-weight and attentional difficulties. Nicotine is known to cross the placenta easily, and enter the foetal bloodstream, leading to neuro - developmental abnormalities. Senior researcher Professor Alan Brown, from the University of Columbia, New York, said: “To our knowledge, this is the first biomarkerbased study to show a relationship between foetal nicotine exposure and schizophrenia.” Women participating in the study had been recruited into the Finnish Prenatal Study of Schizophrenia. Blood tests were carried out during the first and early-second trimesters (threemonth periods) of pregnancy. Prof Brown said: “These findings underscore the value of ongoing public-health education on the potentially- debilitating, and largely-preventable, consequences that smoking may have on children, over time.” Further studies could shed light on exactly how nicotine affects a foetus’ brain, he added. “Finally, it is of interest to examine maternal cotinine in relation to bipolar disorder, autism, and other psychiatric disorders.” In a previous study, Prof Brown and his colleagues showed that the children of mothers who smoked while pregnant had an increased risk of bipolar disorder. The research was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

A fat chance of slimming down A NEW report, urging people to stop counting calories and eat more fat to tackle obesity, has sparked a huge backlash from food experts.
For years, dieticians have advocated that we cut down on the amount of fat we eat, inspiring many people to adopt low-fat diets. Now, however, the story seems to be changing, because, says the report, such eating patterns are having “disastrous health consequences”. The National Obesity Forum and the Public Health Collaboration have, jointly, called for a “major overhaul” of dietary guidelines, accusing the big public health bodies of colluding with the food industry. Their report pushes for a return to “whole foods” such as dairy, fish and meat, as well as high-fat, healthy foods such as avocados, insisting: “Eating fat does not make you fat.”
The authors add that saturated fats do not cause heart disease and that full-fat dairy foods, including milk, yoghurt and cheese, can actually protect the heart. They blame Britain’s growing obesity crisis on low-fat diets and snacking between meals, saying that processed foods labelled “low fat”, “lite” or “low cholesterol” should be avoided. People should also stay away from sugar and stop counting calories - and those with type two diabetes should eat a fat-rich diet instead of one dominated by carbohydrates. The report authors also say that food science has been “corrupted by commercial influences” in a way that represents a “significant threat to public health”. For example, they say the recent “Eatwell Guide” from Public Health England was produced with a large number of people from the food and drink industry. Professor David Haslam, chairman of the
National Obesity Forum, said: “As a clinician, treating patients all day every day, I quickly realised that guidelines from on high, suggesting high carbohydrate, low-fat diets were the universal panacea, were deeply flawed.
“Current efforts have failed - the proof being that obesity levels are higher than they have ever been, and show no chance of reducing, despite the best efforts of Government and scientists.” Doctor Aseem Malhotra (pictured), consultant cardiologist and founding member of the Public Health Collaboration group of medics, said: “Dietary guidelines promoting low-fat foods is, perhaps, the biggest mistake in modern medical history, resulting in devastating consequences for public health.” He added: “The current Eatwell guide from Public Health England is, in my view, more like a metabolic time-bomb than a dietary pattern, conducive for good health. “Eat fat to get slim … don’t fear fat … fat is your friend. It’s now truly time to bring back the fat.” Rob Suchet, personal trainer and nutritional therapist, said: “Eating fat does not ‘clog’ your arteries, as we’ve been told. This is a gross
over-simplification of heart disease. which is far more attributable to stress and high blood sugar, caused by eating too many sugary and starchy foods. “We should be directing our attention to insulin, the hormone which tells our bodies to store fat in response to eating sugars and starches like cereal, bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and even fruit, despite us having been told these are healthy foods due to their lowfat content.” Professor Iain Broom, from Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University, agreed, saying: “Our populations for almost 40 years, have been subjected to an uncontrolled global experiment that has gone drastically wrong.” The report has drawn strong condemnation from other food experts and medical professionals. Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health England , said: “In the face of all the evidence, calling for people to eat more fat, cut out carbs and ignore
calories is irresponsible. “Unlike this opinion piece, our independent experts review all the available evidence - often thousands of scientific papers - run fullscale consultations and go to great lengths to ensure no bias.” Professor John Wass, the Royal College of Physicians’ special adviser on obesity, said there was “good evidence” that saturated fat increases cholesterol. “What is needed is a balanced diet, regular physical activity and a normal healthy weight,” he said. “To quote selective studies risks misleading the public.” And Professor Simon Capewell, from the Faculty of Public Health, said the report was not peer-reviewed, and there was no indication of how it had been funded, something he said was “worrying”. Dr Mike Knapton, the British Heart Foundation’s associate medical director, said the report did not have the “robust and comprehensive review of evidence” required to be taken seriously by the charity.

Youngsters on Cloud Nine You just can’t for Lions’ Dream Holiday offload pets
THE arrival of a group of underprivileged children, from Poland and the UK, at Tenerife South airport, signalled the start of their “Dream Holiday”, courtesy of Tenerife Isla Sur Lions Club.
The youngsters were welcomed at the airport by the Lion’s Club President, Norman Goodall MBE, the executives, members and supporters. After the grand reception, the visitors were driven to Hotel Princesa Dacil, Los Cristianos, where they stayed for seven days. And there was dinner the same night for the Lions Club members and the children. The next day started with a visit to Loro Parque, where the young visitors joined other under-privileged children from La Laguna. As usual there, the children had endless fun, with smiles and ap-
preciation beaming on their innocent faces. There was copious lunch for over 60 people, but sadly, the fun day came to an end and the children from La
Laguna were dropped off at their home, while the Lions’ group continued to Hotel Princesa Dacil. Elena Cabello Moya, Arona Social Services
Councillor, was guest of honour at the Charter Night dinner at WestHaven Bay Restaurant, in Costa del Silencio. And before the grand dinner, attended by all Lions’ executives, members and supporters, she made a speech in recognition and appreciation for the constructive help and positive responses offered to the local community by the Isla Sur Lions. The Club motto is the “People who help people”, and the organising committee ensured that the children visited the Island’s popular tourist attractions, including Castillo San Miguel, Loro Parque, Siam Park, Aqualand, Adeje Golf pitch-andputt, and a speciallyarranged Whales and Dolphins’ boat ride. Tenerife Isla Sur Lions Club has been actively engaged in various social assistances to most communities around Tenerife for 30 years, especially in Adeje and Arona. You can have a look at the Club’s activities in its facebook page https://www.facebook. com/TenerifeIslaSur/
Bag a bargain! ADEJE Council and Mercadillo del Atlántico SA. are, for the ninth consecutive year, organising the local Bargain Fair, designed to help local businesses, as well as offering bargains to the public.
The Fair is open to those in Adeje’s smallbusiness sector, as well as the rest of the archipelago, selling anything from fashion to electronic, home, and DIY goods, as well as food produce. Economic Development Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martin said: “We are offering a range of options to consumers who can
find a huge selection of products at excellent prices. “At the same time, we are offering a space for local and Island businesses to promote their company and products and sell, at lower prices, goods they’ve in the shops before the new-season stock arrives.” Businesses wishing to take part have until next Monday (6th
June) to book a stall. Call 922 756 249, ext 7512 or 7573. The Fair takes place on 11th and 12th June, from 10am to 10pm, in the parking lot by the Adeje School of Music and Dance. Over the two days, there will be parallel activities for all the family, including a zumba class, a relaxation zone, bouncy castles, and raffles.
THE main goal of Accion del Sol, since opening its refuge in Granadilla eight years ago, has been to reduce the number of dogs abandoned on the streets of Tenerife. That is why officials have accepted the official rules and regulations, and have reached agreements with Tenerife Cabildo and its various municipalities here in the South. The sanctuary’s aim is to press forward towards responsible management, concerning the issue of animal protection by both parties. Collection procedure The local police notify the collector to arrange the collection of the abandoned dog. The Civil Protection, or the probation officer, picks up the animal and takes it in a speciallyadapted collection box to the shelter. On arrival, the dog is issued with a serial number for registration and documented. Three copies are made and all are signed and sealed by the manager/centre veterinarian. The official document states the meeting site, date, time, race, sex and colour of the dog. The dog collector will also take a picture of the animal for the document, and checks with a microchip reader to see whether it has been chipped. If the animal has a microchip, the owner will be notified immediately. He/she then has 21 days to remove the animal from the centre, after passing through the Local Police or Town Hall and showing the relevant documents. If, after 21 days, the dog is not claimed, it will be in the custody of the shelter. If the owner hasn’t registered a “lost pet” complaint at the local police, he or she faces a substantial fine. Who holds the registered document? One copy stays in the shelter, the local police have another, while the third goes to the relevant Town Hall. Although Accion del Sol’s shelter can house up to 200 animals and is regarded as one of the largest refuges in Tener-
ife, there is insufficient space for all the stray dogs. That means there are strict controls in place, which are necessary to prevent overcrowding and enable staff to maintain the relevant standards of animal protection and welfare. For that reason Marion Gonzalez, who runs Accion de Sol and is a director of Aktiontier - the German charity which sponsors the refuge stresses that it is not a place where people can simply offload their pets. “If a person decides to have an animal, then he/ she must maintain responsibility for the pet’s lifetime,” said Marion. “The refuge is not obligated to accept pets which are no longer cherished by their owners. “Although this sometimes causes arguments with people who want to abandon dogs at the shelter, there can be no exceptions to this rule. “The refuge takes in only those animals which have been abandoned in those municipalities where there is an agreement with the Town Council.” Marion added: “We have never said we can solve the global problem on this Island. We simply want to be an example of how you could take the issue of animal protection from the authorities and other protectors. “As some municipalities receive Government payments, it is our duty to comply with the agreements. Naturally, this also includes crimes of mistreatment. “We all need to work together without repercussions, and to ensure that people who abandon their pets are punished. “If we fail to do this, the problem of abandoned and non-neutered dogs will continue.”

F1 Monaco Grand Prix
Best behaviour, please gents MERCEDES boss Toto Wolff is well aware that any errors from his Rosberg-Hamilton partnership during Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix could open the door to other teams in the Formula 1 title race.
Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg collided while disputing the lead on the first lap in Barcelona nearly two weeks ago, ending the race immediately and leaving Red Bull and Ferrari to fight it out. A concerned Wolff said: “It’s clear we are under attack from more than one angle. We cannot afford to drop the ball so we must remain united and strong, and hit back hard this weekend.” The crash meant that reigning champion Hamilton, who trails Rosberg by 43 points in the championship, fell to third in the table behind Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, who finished second to Red Bull teenager Max Verstappen in Spain. Red Bull are expected to get a performance lift in Monaco this weekend, with one of their cars set to be fitted with an upgraded Renault engine, which boosts performance by up to 0.5 seconds a lap. Renault have not yet
said whether they will race the engine in Monaco, but the company are tipped to give one of the new engines to each of its teams - the factory outfit and Red Bull. If they do, the most likely recipients will be Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Renault’s Kevin Magnussen. Hamilton, who has had a difficult start to the season as a result of a series of problems, is also just nine points clear of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Ricciardo. Wolff said: “Barcelona was tough to take. We came away upset at an opportunity missed but this is racing. “The drivers know how we operate. The team are responsible for giving them the best possible cars, and they are
responsible for getting the best out of them and for bringing them home.” Hamilton’s only Monaco Grand Prix victory was in 2008 during his championship-winning season, and Wolff added: “When we let them down, we apologise and the same goes the other way. “It’s a pretty normal culture - we deal with setbacks together and we move on.” Each driver felt the other was at least partly responsible for the incident, but Hamilton is keen to put it behind him. “Barcelona was the worst feeling but, like I always say, the true test is how you get back up when you’ve been knocked down. “It was a tough moment for all of us after
the race but it’s now chapter closed and looking ahead to Monaco.” The world champion is determined to clinch his first win there since 2008, having lost last year’s race in Monaco because of a strategy error by the Mercedes team. After dominating the weekend, he was called into the pits by mistake during a safety-car period and lost out to Rosberg and Vettel. “It’s an incredible feeling, making a car dance through those streets one of the purest thrills you can have in a racing car,” said Hamilton. “I’ve not had the best run of results in Monaco in recent years, but last year showed I have the pace to do the job. I’m approaching this weekend with only
one result in mind.” Rosberg considers Monaco “the ultimate driver’s track”, and has won at the circuit three years running The German driver added: “I was gutted after what happened in Spain, for myself but mostly for the team. “I know how hard everybody works to make these amazing cars, so for us to leave them both in the gravel is the worst possible scenario. But we’ve talked it through and now it’s time to leave it in the past. It’s one of my home races next in Monaco - the ultimate driver’s track. It’s where I grew up and where I still live today, so that always makes it a special weekend. “It has been amazing to win there for the past three years, but I know it will be tough to repeat that with Lewis, the Ferraris and the Red Bulls all so strong now. “But I’m feeling confident, so bring on the battle.” Hamilton, a triple world champion, feels no tension towards Rosberg, saying: “It’s fine. In the past, there would have been tension, but there was just pure respect.” They have known each other since their junior, karting days and have clashed several times in their Formula 1 careers But the Brit is adamant there is no linger-
ing bad feeling on this occasion. “It is always good to discuss things,” he said. “As a team, we did in Barcelona, and then at the factory, individually. “Nico and I spoke, though I didn’t feel we had to because there is no issue. We just move on. There is nothing you can do about the past. We didn’t talk through the incident - we know what happened.” Hamilton added: “We are not like the more emotional beings on the planet who talk about things - we don’t do that. “We arrived very cool and chilled and spoke. All we need to know is that the respect is still there and that we are going to keep racing. And that’s all we had to say. “We both have a long career left with racing with another. There are going to be lots of close encounters and we are just going to try our best.” Hamilton has not won a race since he clinched the title at the US Grand Prix last October but is obviously chasing a victory this weekend. “If it happens, it happens,” he said. “If it doesn’t, but there will be many more opportunities. There are still 16 races. The glass, rather than being half-full, is 10% full. And there is still the rest of it to fill up.”
Canarian Under-18 Rugby Cup Final (1st leg)
Nandu win a real bruiser AFTER their recordbreaking score against El Medano, Ñandú embarked on their final away game of the season, against Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas in the first leg of the Canarian Under-18 Cup Final. The opening 20 minutes saw Las Palmas throw everything they had at a determined Ñandú defence, which remained resolute. But Ñandú failed to capitalise on turn-over ball when they had the chance, and, with an uncharacteristicallyshaky line-out, coupled with many unforced er-
Las Palmas 7 Ñandú 19
rors, the home side took advantage to score a try, which was converted. But after 23 minutes, a break on the outside from flanker Facundo Patsouris took the play up into the Las Palmas half and, slowly, the momentum started to swing. Three minutes later, marauding prop Gregorio Prieto, carried the ball - and the entire Gran Canaria pack - over the line to score the opening try for Ñandú to narrow the deficit.
And they continued the rally in the sec-
ond half, putting the pressure back on to
the home side’s pack. Kicks by captain Jacob Oakenfold and outside centre Gabriel Mendez, provided targets for the wings, and Ryan Cox reacted swiftly to one and flew over, the try being converted by Oakenfold to give Nandu a 12-7 advantage. Gradually, they took tactical control. The backs eventually broke the tough Las Palmas defence and insidecentre Toby DenholmSmith scored his first try of the season, converted by Oakenfold, to
complete the 19-7 score. But it took winger Thiago Groba’s lastditch tackle to save the day for Nandu in a clash that lived up to the prematch expectations of a physical, if not brutal, first leg. The return match takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at 12.30pm at Tenerife Top Training, La Caleta, and spectators are welcome. For further information on how to get involved in the club, please call Paul on 664 361 086.

Tenerife look the part CD Tenerife 3 Real Valladolid 1 By Roscoe TENERIFE’S chances of making the end-ofseason play-offs had vanished in Mallorca, but that didn’t stop the side from producing another couple of encouraging displays.
Last weekend, Real Valladolid pitched up in Santa Cruz and, like the hosts, they were really playing for pride only They have had a poor season by their standards and, worryingly for their fans, they have become poor travellers. And they never looked like leaving the Archipelago with any points. Javi Moyano spent a couple of successful seasons with Tenerife before a shock move to his home-town side 48 hours before the season started. It certainly left Tenerife in the lurch - and the fans don’t forget
such matters! He got the treatment which left shocked Tenerife captain Suso saying: “I don’t know why he got that. He did well with us and never let the team down.” Sometimes, the players don’t get it. It was all about the timing. Anyway, Moyano appears to have regressed this season and has not exactly pulled up any trees. His side also defended like trees a few times as Tenerife’s pups enjoyed themselves in the sunshine. Nano is really starting to make a name for himself, and I have been asked by a few “faces” in the UK about him. There are whispers of strong interest from a couple of La Liga sides as well. It seems the top flight don’t want to lose him to England, as they did Ayoze Perez. And there are lots of similarities in the two youngsters. For me, Nano is a little further ahead at his age. I truly hope he is still in Santa Cruz in August. He helped himself to
two more goals against Valladolid and, on another day, it could have been a tasty hat trick. Choco Lozano also got his name on the scoresheet in what could be his final appearance at the Heliodoro. The Honduran is now on international duty and will face South Korea this weekend. There is no doubt that he’s a good player, but is he really better than this standard? The jury is very much out. Tenerife haven’t bought a player for cash since Nino a decade ago. There is a fee agreed with his Honduras parent club, but it is an awful lot of money by our standards. Yes, there is a profit to be made in a sell-on - but not that much! And he is not exactly first choice. He also picks up a few injuries, so I just don’t see the deal happening. Another player to wave goodbye to Santa Cruz is goalie Dani. He is back in favour with the Venezuelan set-up and is in the warm-ups for the Copa America. It’s a fine reward for another consistent season. He is already under contract for next year and there have been whispers of a new deal. The Valladolid win came just a few days before a rare midweek match. Of course, Tenerife were away - Canarian sides are always away in mid-week, but it was the relatively simple journey to Alcorcon, just outside Madrid. They have timed their promotion charge to perfection and the win
Alcorcon 2 CD Tenerife 1
over Tenerife puts them in the play-offs. The hosts took an early lead through former Brighton striker David Rodriguez, who has had a super season. The irony is that he could have been playing against Alcorcon. Tenerife were firm favourites to sign Rodriguez last summer, until Alcorcon’s late offer came in. Money talks, I guess. He is a tall player and has the sort of physicality that really pays off in this league. Tenerife showed their grit to battle back. Nano had a couple of chances, and Thierry Moutinho took one just after halftime. Moutinho has been shrewd signing. He was out of favour at Mal-
lorca, but has flourished in Tenerife. He has had five clubs in five seasons and really needs to find a settled home. Moutinho is keen to stay here next season, and there must be a good chance of that. He has the smarts, a fine touch and, if he can add a few goals, he will be mustard. At 1-1, both sides went in search of a winner. And even though Tenerife had their moments, Alcorcon nicked with a late Major effort. It was tough on Tenerife, but there was lots to like. The team are no longer soft on the road. Results and performances since February show that. They are also now a side who get respect. There

is a buzz around them, and that is something you cannot buy. With just a couple of games to go, it’s still so very tight at the top. While Albacete have been relegated again, it would take a brave man to wager on who will go the other way. This weekend sees our last home game of the season as Ponferradina roll into town. They could still need something in their quest to survive, but they will get no favours from Tenerife. The fans remember how they celebrated when they got promotion to the second tier in Santa Cruz a few years ago. And pay-back can be a bitch!

Hawaiian fun in the sun, and super golf!
WOW, what another fantastic week for the fund-raising golfers of Palm Mar. Some 24 players, including those making a special trip from the UK, took part, playing on the Amarilla, Adeje and Las Americas courses. Overall winner for the Men’s event, sponsored by Signfab (UK) Ltd, was Carl Hodgson. The Ladies’ winner was Tera Cassidy, whose event was spon-
sored by Garry Louch, of ACS. The pairs challenge, sponsored by the Colonial Bar’s Nigel Pinfield in Adeje, was won by Tera Cassidy and Brian Jones. And the Par 3 section, sponsored by Mike Carlin, was won by Dave Ford. During a fabulous week, there was also a Charity Fun Day at Los Palos, organised by Brian and Linda Jones, in partnership with
Chiringuito Beach Bar. And all players donned Hawaiian shirts, garlands and grass skirts. A sight to behold, indeed! Entertainment and food was provided by Nigel and Polly Pinfield at The Colonial Bar on the Tuesday evening. The splendid golfing show finished with a Presentation Evening last Thursday at Palm Mar’s Mix Bar - and a big thank-you goes to
the owner, Antonio Jose Parra Rojas. A raffle and auction received a tremendous response, with over 2,400 euros raised for the Cancer Bus Fund, here in South Tenerife. Thanks to everyone involved in the entire week’s organisation, and to the contributors of raffle prizes and auction items. And that’s not all … dates are already in the diary for May 2017!

Is it time for Wales?
WITH the European Championship getting ever closer, we are having a look at the group stages. Last week I reviewed Group A, and this week we turn our attentions to Group B.
By Adi Benson
England and Wales are pretty much all you need to know about this group! With over 100 matches already played between the two home nations, this 16th June showdown may just be the biggest yet. England hold the upper hand, having come out on top 86 times. But this Wales team could prove to be the strongest yet, and it promises to be a fierce contest. With Slovakia and Russia in the mix, Group B is not an easy one from which to escape. England are probably group favourites, but, with a few third-placed teams advancing this time, you could see three from this group.
England
WALES
Unbeaten in qualifying with 10 out of 10 wins, you can see why England are group favourites. The question is, though, can they carry that form through to the tournament?
During their qualifying run, the Welsh actually made it into the world rankings’ Top-10 on the back of some impressive performances. They finished second in their group, beaten by a young Belgium team, currently ranked No.2 in the world.
The Three Lions are actually the only World Cup-winning nation never to win a European Championship title and they will be going all-out to rectify that. When they hosted in 1996, it was the closest they had come, only to lose to old foes Germany in the semis - on penalties, of course! In fact, penalties are the thorn in England’s side because they have lost five times in major tournaments on pens since that defeat. Can the new generation of youngsters surpass the England teams of the past and make it past the semis?
Manager: Roy Hodgson World ranking: 10th England: Odds to win 9/1. Best bet: Harry Kane top tournament scorer 16/1
Star performer for Wales was Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, who scored seven goals to help send the Welsh to the Finals. The last time they appeared was in 1976, when they reached the quarter-finals, where they were beaten by Yugoslavia. Since then, they have failed to qualify for any major tournament, although they came close in 2004, losing to group rivals Russia in a playoff.
Manager: Chris Coleman World ranking: 24th Wales: Odds to win 66/1 Best bet: Aaron Ramsey top Wales scorer 4/1
RUSSIA
SLOVAKIA
Russia also finished second in their group, ensuring qualification with, perhaps, their most important match being a 1-0 victory over Sweden, which meant the Swedes finished third.
This is the first time in five attempts that Slovakia have qualified for the Euros after their split from Czechoslovakia. And their strong start, winning the first seven games, helped with qualification.
Manager: Leonid Slutski World ranking: 27th Russia: Odds to win 40/1 Best bet: To lose in the quarter-final 11/2
Manager: Ján Kozák World ranking: 32nd Slovakia: Odds to win 100/1 Best bet: to beat Wales in first match 9/4
Surprisingly, the Russians have one of the more successful histories when it comes to the Euros, when combined with their appearances as the Soviet Union. They have featured in the semi-finals six times, with one win back in 1960. In the 2008 tournament, they made it through to the semis where they lost to eventual winners Spain. They have also been runners-up three times, and only Germany have more Final appearances, which is a pretty impressive record.
They have a solid squad and boast decent players such as Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel and Marek Hamsik, from Napoli. Slovakia also finished runners-up in their group, but there was no shame in that because winners were Spain. But they did gain some bragging rights back in October 2014 after beating a very strong Spain - their first qualifying defeat since October 2006. Slovakia lack Euro experience, but they will be difficult opponents and may just have a squad strong enough to move beyond the group stages.
