The uptapped market Continued from front Routes Africa 2016 will be held between 26-28th June in Santa Cruz, and some of the biggest names in the flight game will be here. Turismo de Tenerife sees Africa as an untapped market, and our tourism chiefs have been working on the continent over the last few years. This conference will give Tenerife a chance to really shine on home soil. Some of the airlines who have already confirmed their attendance are Air Zimbabwe, Ethopian Airlines, fastjet, Germania, Hahn Air, Malawian, Royal Air Maroc, Titan, Smile, Iberia, Norwegian, South African Airways and many more. Airports and national bodies will also attend the event, organised by UBM. Andrew Rowe (pictured), the experienced host and project manager of Routes Africa, spent over 20 years in the management of Manchester Airport, and he was part of the team which saw passenger numbers quadruple. Rowe has told Canarian Weekly how important this conference really is, saying: “We started the ‘Routes’ concept in 1995 and we now have many events all over the world. “There are regional conferences in Asia, America, Europe and, of course, Africa. This particular event started in 2006, so this is our 11th. “We bring airlines to the table and we preschedule meetings between them and air-

ports, or tourism chiefs. The airlines literally sit at a table, and the destination presents its services within a 20-minute window. “In fact, it’s a bit like speed-dating! The contact can be something as little as an exchange of business cards, or it can be something much more concrete, and a closing conversation on a deal.” It’s a tried and tested formula after the traditional industry workshops and keynote speeches. The conference really does match up airlines with potential new markets and destinations, and this is where Tenerife is ready for action.

Rowe admitted: “Tenerife and Tenerife Tourism have been great supporters of these events over the last few years. “They have a strategy, which is to try to open up more routes with Africa, especially Western Africa, and they are working hard to see if they can create Tenerife as a hub. “They have a vision that would see Tenerife opening up the markets to North America.” He added: “We have

been so impressed by the engagement and the commitment of Tenerife Tourism, the local government, the Tourism Minister, the Chamber of Commerce and everybody who came together to make it obvious to us that Tenerife would be a great destination in which to bring our event. “It was the efforts by Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe and their team, that helped us come here. “Recently, we have been in Uganda and

the Seychelles, and we thought Tenerife would be a great destination, with lots to offer.” For many of the delegates, it will be their first trip to Tenerife, and it is hoped that the airlines will see the geographical advantages the Island has to offer. And Rowe, who believes that is the key to our future, said: “There is a chance of Tenerife to become a real hub, if you consider Amsterdam, which has a population of only four million people has nearly 70 million passengers going through it. “They had a vision many, many years ago. So for Tenerife? Why not? The International Air Transport Association recently announced that 70 million passengers move around Africa by air at the moment. “In another 20 years, the IATA, forecasts, there will be 300 million. And, according to the Association, the top-10 developing markets are all in Africa, so that is a lot to aim for.” There will be other destinations and airports looking to do

deals in what could be the last, big potential, air market. The business opportunities are there for all to see, and Rowe recalled how a similar event reaped the rewards for one destination. “Air services, as everyone in Tenerife realises, is absolutely critical to the long-term, economic growth of the Island,” he said. “The benefits? Well, an example comes to mind. A couple of years ago at one of our events, Las Vegas persuaded British Airways to do a daily flight from London to Vegas. “That directly brought in 91 million dollars of revenue, and not a penny of that was from gaming revenue. So you can see the economic impact of just one air service. It’s quite phenomenal.” As for Tenerife itself, Routes Africa is another opportunity to promote the growing tourist trade. Hotels and resorts will also be elbowing the opposition out of the way as they look to tie-up some of the bigger tour operators in Africa. And, as you would expect with his job, Andrew Rowe is well-travelled. But he always returns to Tenerife. “I holidayed here about 10 times over the last 30 years,” he said. “The place has a good range of facilities: fine hotels, good infrastructure … there is lots to do. “I’m already a convert, and I feel that after the Routes Africa event, you will have many more people leaving as ambassadors’ for your Island.”

Hospitals are well fit THE latest Satisfaction Hospital Discharge Survey (ESAH) for public hospitals shows that in 2015, those in the Canary Islands scored 8.51 points, on a scale of zero-to-10.

The survey sampled answers from 3,325 patients and, of these, 67.5% were admitted to the emergency department, and 52.6% were accommodated in under five days. By sex, 55.2% were women and 44.8% men, and the largest number of individuals were aged between 20 and 69 years. The overall assessment made by users admitted during 2015 was an average 8.51 points. El Hierro’s Hospital Virgen de los Reyes

scored 8.66 points, and Tenerife’s Candelaria hospital (Universitario de Canarias) 8.27. The full survey results are similar to those in 2013 and 2014, the overall average satisfaction scores being 8.57 and 8.54. respectively. The current report also shows improvements in some aspects of care quality. Meanwhile, among the measured parameters was room-cleaning, in which 91.27% of patients recorded “good” or “very good”, scoring an average 9.2 points. Hospital food in 2015 was another issue evaluated by the ESHA. Regarding the temperature at which it was served, patients awarded an average of 8.2 score As for quality, 26.50% rated it “very good”, 18.62% “good” and 19.02 “regular”. Mother ejected from plane denies smoking A SCOTTISH mother, who insisted she was unfairly accused of smoking in a plane’s toilet, was ejected from the Tenerife-bound flight, leaving her two young children on board. Amanda Anderson, 32, was escorted from the plane by police at Edinburgh Airport, following a four-hour delay because of a mechanical fault. The single mum, from Ballingry, Fife, furious at being separated from daughters Summer, 10, and four-year-old Kitty, at the start of their family holiday, was adamant she hadn’t lit up. But a Ryanair spokesman said: “The crew requested police assistance ahead of departure after a customer was found smoking inflight. Police removed and detained the individual.” Amanda’s relatives - mother, sister Mary and her husband Peter - were also on the flight

and took care of her children, while she arranged a later flight to Tenerife. Now, she and her family are demanding a full apology from Ryanair for splitting them up. Her mum, Sylvia Finlay, 55, said: “The flight was packed and Amanda was struggling with the kids and their handluggage.” She said tempers became frayed and her daughter was accused by a flight attendant of smoking in the toilet. Sylvia added: “Passengers sitting next to the toilet said there was no smell of smoke and the alarm never went off. But the attendant said she was going to contact the police. “The girls were both crying and had to travel without their mum. It was a traumatic experience for my daughter and grandchildren and it should never have happened.”

Woman held after A TF-1 death crash

A YOUNG women was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after the death of a man on the TF1.

At around 5.30, there was a collision between a car and a motorcycle on the South motorway (TF-1), at the eastbound Guaza turn-off. It resulted in the death of a 73-year-old Slovenian resident of

Arona, identified as A.B. Members of Granadilla’s Guardia Civil Traffic Police arrested a 22-year-old female on suspicion of reckless homicide. She was found to be under the influence of alcohol and

narcotic substances, according to tests carried out. The Canarian Emergency Department (SUC) rushed two ambulances to the scene, but medics were unable to save the man’s life.

Thieves target Las Galletas THE Guardia Civil in Las Americas have been busy recently following a spate of robberies. And this week saw them probing another worrying incident.

They are still looking into a robbery suffered at Wassapp computer store, in Las Galletas, where thieves took off with three laptops. It is believed that the theft was filmed by a security camera, and police are confident they will find those re-

sponsible, although there have been no arrests yet. The intruders were thought to have taken almost 45 minutes to force the lock, which triggered an alarm. But though the Guardia Civil were on the scene swiftly, the thieves had gone. A press release noted that there was little damage to the shop, and the owner said it was his first robbery since he opened the store three years ago. But criminals obviously have it in for businesses in Las Galletas. In the last two weeks,

the Cocos Fashion clothes store, in Calle Luis Alvarez Cruz, was burgled. However the shopowner surprised the two hooded criminals. “As I live across the road from my business, I heard a noise of breaking glass,” she said. “I looked and I could see that there was someone inside my store. I got up and went over to investigate. As I got inside the building, one of the robbers turned and knocked me down.” She added: “By the time I had got to my feet, he had run away,

and there was only a tablet missing.” The brave store-owner confirmed that it was the second robbery she had suffered in less than a year. These recent crimes have shocked Las Galletas traders, who are demanding action and a larger police presence in the area. Meanwhile, Guardia Civil officers are still seeking a man who stole 600 euros from a Granadilla house last weekend. They believe it was the same person who robbed some tourists in an El Medano hotel.

Spanish manufacturing may have reached peak It’s wishful thinking for Canarian jobless THE slow, economic recovery in the Canary Islands simply isn’t filtering through to the everyday worker, with hundreds of thousands of people in Spain still finding it hard to secure longterm work.

And the number of people who have remained jobless for years has reached eye-watering levels. A new report shows that the total number of people in the Canaries, who have spent a minimum three years without work, is an amazing 110,000. Many of them say they have lost all hope of reemployment and, in percentage terms, it means that almost 35 of every 100 of those out of work in the Canaries

left their last job three or more years ago. But most worrying for the economy and the Archipelago society, perhaps, is that despite improvement in general, lower jobless figures have not helped to reduce the number of long-term unemployed. In essence, there are fewer jobless, but those who have been longer unemployed stay unemployed longer! The Labour Force Survey, released by the National Institute of Statistics, discovered that 107,300 Canarians were out of work for at least 1,095 days. This gives the Canary Islands the highest, long-term unemployed percentage of all Spanish regions. As if that isn’t enough, there are 6,200 more people in this bracket since the 2014 survey.

CONCERNS are growing about Spain’s manufacturing activity, which expanded in May at the slowest rate since October as the number of new orders dropped.

A survey on Wednesday suggested that the country’s economic growth may have reached its peak. Markit’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) of manufacturing companies fell to 51.8 in May from 53.5 the previous month. Yet the index held above the 50 line, separating growth from contraction, for the 30th consecutive month. Andrew Harker, a Markit economist, said: “The Spanish manufacturing sector moved closer to stagnation in May, according to the latest PMI release, suggesting that the current period of expansion

Coastal facelift for 1.5m euros

TENERIFE’S seaboard restoration plan, recently unveiled by the Cabildo, will see an investment of over 1.5 million euros in different parts of the coastline near Puerto de la Cruz.

A few more details have now been released,

and a few more pennies have been found for the project, which will be ongoing until 2025. A priority list gives the Martiánez beach promenade as the first upgrade, at a cost of about 850,000 euros. Next will be accessibility to San Telmo’s bathing area, followed by access to the coast in the Victor Machado area, and Punta Brava’s sea view.

There will also be improvements in accessibility and image to Laja de la Sal, and the adaptation of a new surf zone around Lake Martiánez, focused on the removal of stones and shale to provide a safer sporting environment. Last but not least, Jardin Playa will have an overall accessibility improvement and replacement of landscaping elements on the seafront.

could be coming to an end. “The rate of growth in new business has now eased in four successive months, suggesting we are seeing a protracted slowdown rather than a temporary blip.” Spain’s economy has been expanding since it emerged from a prolonged double-dip recession three years ago. But political uncer-

tainty ahead of the country’s second General Election in six months, on 26th June, together with global weakness, are expected to weigh. New orders in the manufacturing sector grew slightly in May, with the index showing 50.8, but that was the lowest expansion since the index turned positive in November 2013.

Pensions creep up

THE number of Canaries’ pensions paid out in May stands at 297,959 - a 2.8% increase over the same month last year. The Ministry of Employment and Social Security (INSS) also recorded that the average pension in the Archipelago was 835.08 euros, up 1.5% on last May’s figure. Of those pensions, 35,954 were for Permanent Disability averaging 848.34 euros; 165.365 Retirement, 987.28 euros on average; 78.052 Widows, 617.95 euros; 16.646, Orphan-hood, 349.32 euros, and 1.942, Relatives, 520.52 euros. The entire public system now has 9,384,016 contributory pensions, representing an increase of 1.13% over last year. More than half, 5,712,582, are paid out for retirement specifically, Widowhood, 2,355,188; Permanent disability, 936,281; Orphans, 340,462 and Family, 39,503. The monthly Social Security Pension’s outlay totalled 8,467.28m euros this year, which was up 3% from 2015. The average pension amounted to 1,041.15 euros.

Golden times for architects team SPANISH architects have carried off the prestigious Golden Lion award at the 2016 Architecture Biennale in Venice for their exhibition entitled “Unfinished”.

Architects from Nigeria, Brazil, Peru and Paraguay also won prizes, but Germany walked away Lionless! Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena, Director of Italy’s 15th Biennale, opened the Venice International Architecture Exhibition last Saturday with a ceremony to recognise this year’s best achievements. The judges described Spain’s display as “a concisely-curated selection of emerging architects, whose work shows how creativity and commitment can transcend material constraints”. Special mentions also went to the contributions from Japan and Peru. But the German exhibition, “Making Heimat - Germany arrival country”, failed to impress the judging panel. The word “Heimat” refers to the German term for “homeland”, and the work was conceived by Peter Cachola Schmal, head of the German Architecture Museum, drawing on Europe’s current refugee crisis.

But Germany, one of 65 countries participating, failed to win any prizes for its “Making Heimat”. The international exhibition, held every other year, occupies two Venice locations: “Giardini” (Gardens) and the expansive “Arsenale” - a historic wharf, and this event runs until 27th November. The theme for the 2016 Architecture Biennale, “Reporting from the Front”, called on global architects to propose solutions to some of the greatest urban problems - from rebuilding cities ravaged by war to making refugee camps liveable. In this section of the competition, the Golden Lion went to a team of Paraguayan architects for “harnessing simple materials, structural ingenuity and unskilled labour to bring architecture to underserved communities”. The Silver Lion, awarded to a Promising Young Participant, went to Nigerian architect Kunlé Adeyemi for his “Makoko Floating School”. The jury said it served as a powerful demonstration “that architecture, at once iconic and pragmatic, can amplify the importance of education”. Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha was also honoured with a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.

The flights, to Tenerife (Tuesdays and Saturdays); Fuerteventura (Thursdays and Sundays) and Gran Canaria (Wednesdays and Saturdays), are already bookable on www.transavia.com one-way from 59 euros.

Spanish firms back Europe to be united EUROPE’S leading companies, just three weeks from the UK Referendum, have reiterated the dangers of a Brexit, saying it “would reduce prosperity”.

The European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT), a forum made up of the heads of Europe’s 50 top industrial and technology companies - among them Spain’s Inditex, Iberdrola and Telefónica - has written an open letter highlighting the importance of a united Europe.

The three businesses, along with banks Santander and Sabadell and construction company Ferrovial, are Spain’s leading representatives in the UK. The ERT’s letter, rejecting “fear” campaigns on both sides in the referendum run-up, adds: “This could be one of the biggest opportunities for prosperity in Europe. We need to act in unison to progress.” The organisation’s members have a combined turnover of more than two trillion euros a year. They spend more than 55bn on Research and Development, and employ some 6.8 million Europeans.

Spain is represented in the ERT by Pablo Isla, Ignacio Sánchez Galán and José María Álvarez-Pallete, the respective CEOs of Inditex, Iberdrola and Telefónica. The letter accepts that “Europe can and should improve”, and warns against ignoring the EU’s strengths, as well as highlighting the importance of two of Brussels’ key objectives, which, in turn, are the Achilles heel of the Brexit campaign: competitiveness and policies to boost exports and access to overseas markets. The majority of independent experts say the UK would lose in both

areas if voters opted to leave the EU. The ERT points out that the EU is the world’s biggest economy, ahead of the US and China, with a 16% market share of global trade. It adds that some 36 million jobs throughout Europe depend on trade; protecting them is one of the main arguments of those arguing in favour of the UK remaining in the EU. Four of Britain’s main trading partners, Germany, The Netherlands, France and Ireland, are EU members - and trade with them would be seriously affected by Brexit, says the ERT.

Tenerifians are flocking abroad THE number of Tenerifians living abroad is growing, and, last year alone, 75,998 people registered as residents moved off the Island. That was 65.31% more than seven years ago when the figure was 45,972. This latest report from the National Statistics Institute (INE) shows the municipalities with the highest percentage of residents who have moved abroad are Santa Cruz, Icod de Los Vinos, San Cristobal de La Laguna, La Orotava and Los Realejos.

By contrast, the towns with fewer leaving are El Sauzal, Vilaflor, Arafo, La Matanza and Tegueste. Also, the number of islanders living in oth-

er countries increased faster than the national total, which expanded by 56.6% over the same period to stand at just over 2.3 million people abroad.

As for the whole Archipelago, the figure reached 163,018 people living outside, of which 114,165 were from Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, and only 48,853 from the Eastern Islands. This Canaries’ data has swelled by 7,602 residents abroad since last year, when the figure was 155,416, and more than 68,161 islanders since 2009. The INE figures then showed that 94,857 Canarian people had made new homes away from the islands.

Brakes on taxis’ parking dispute THE long-running taxi dispute in the North of the Island has moved a step closer to being resolved.

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Twist & shout! IT’S strange to come back from the UK with a sun-tan. I’m sure that has never happened to me before. My darker colour is down to a few lovely days’ fishing.

I now consider myself an expert, judging on the number of mackerel I caught for supper. A few hours out at sea, with the classical music turned up while enjoying a fine Cuban cigar and a bottle of red. Bliss. Well, it would have been if the red tasted how it should. I know, I know, another column about alcoholic grape juice. Last week I embarked on a challenge, one that I am destined to lose. If you live in the UK you will know this and can probably answer the question. Why does all wine now come in a screw-top bottle? If I asked one person, I asked a thousand. And the curious thing is, they all told the same lie. Has this been drummed into them, to repeat this lie or else

their puppy gets shot? “Well, there is a worldwide cork shortage and, anyway, it’s better for the environment.” Both answers are utter tosh. The fact is this: there is no cork shortage. In fact, there is enough cork to close all the bottles of wine produced for the next 100 years. Also, why doesn’t the cork “shortage” extend to bottles of bubbles? And the second point? According to experts, mining for bauxite, the key ingredient in the screw cap, is “one of the most environmentallydevastating practices on our planet.” So that just leaves one reason. The real reason: cost! It’s far cheaper to have a screw-top. I find it incredibly sad. For the sake of a few pennies, we are expected to lose the joy of uncorking and sampling a fine bottle of wine. How can a guy go on a date and impress, if the waiter has to twist the top off of what is expected to be a fine drop of vino? Can you imagine our Spanish or French cousins putting up with a screw-top? Another reason to vote Remain!

La Laguna and Santa Cruz taxi drivers say they are working out their differences with the councils over where they can and cannot collect fares in the port. This week, at a meeting with Public Works Councillor Jonathan Dominguez, certain places were agreed for the capital’s taxis to be able to collect and drop off cruise-ship passengers legally. Also present were local police representative Elena Delgado; Rosario Hernandez, director of the area’s Public Safe-

ty; Francisco Guanche, President of Radio Taxi Laguna, and Miguel Ojeda, co-ordinator of the Taxi port of Santa Cruz, who said: “It was a positive meeting.” A couple of months ago, Santa Cruz Council invited taxi drivers in the capital to submit a “detailed report” outlining their thoughts, ideas and needs for taxis next to the Plaza del Adelantado, before

the start of the new cruise season in late September. During the 80-minute meeting, several possible locations were mentioned. In addition to the initial proposal of the co-ordinator, port taxis using the parking lot of ‘The Quinteras’ sites, near the Plaza del Cristo, or even the subways, were also discussed. “What we now have

are several options, and the aim is that the area can park 10 cars on an easy-to-use rank,” said Ojeda. Guanche said there would be allowances for local taxis only, and it would not be possible for vehicles of other municipalities to collect around the port area. But he added: “We have no interest in ruling anything out, especially if it helps boost tourism in the city.” The original complaint by Santa Cruz taxi-drivers was what they called the “over-zealous actions of the Local Police of La Laguna towards them”, which, they added, have caused serious trouble when it comes to parking, collecting or dropping-off tourists from cruise ships.

The protesters who had a lunch break STREET protesters and riot police - not for the first time - clashed again on Sunday over the eviction of squatters in the Barcelona district of Gràcia.

Some 300 people gathered at noon in Plaça de la Revolució, just metres away from the building of a former bank, which was taken over by squatters five years ago and turned into a community centre. Demonstrators, who had vowed to retrieve it, tossed objects at the police, who held their ground around the socalled Banc Expropiat (The Expropriated Bank) to prevent squatters from re-entering the premises.

But although the protest began in a festive mood, the tension began to rise some 90 minutes later as several youths attempted to break through the police cordon to reach the old CatalunyaCaixa branch. In fact, this bank decided to have the squatters evicted on Monday via a court order. Squatters wearing plastic helmets began hurling water, bleach, confetti and a variety of objects at the police. And a photographer was injured by a can, lobbed by a protester. The Mossos d’Esquadra - the regional police force - responded with three charges which were less aggressive than the ones seen throughout last week’s clashes. As a result, 15 protesters and seven policemen

were injured, according to figures provided by the police and by the squatters. The protesting ended when demonstrators decided it was time for a lunch break, a Twitter message announcing: “We are pulling back at Plaza de la Revolució. We are temporarily lifting the siege. We’re not scared, we’re hungry.” The protesters agreed to meet again at 4pm to continue the demo, and there to join them when they did were members of the Catalan parliament, affiliated with the CUP, an anti-capitalist political group which has been expressing sympathy for the squatters. Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, a former antieviction activist herself, has been accused of being soft on protesters,

who destroyed street furniture in last week’s demonstrations. Jorge Fernández Diáz, Spain’s acting Interior Minister, said Colau was “putting herself in an equidistant spot, in the best of cases”. The Mayor claims the city cannot do much because this is a conflict between private parties, and because the squatters have rejected city officials’ offer to act as mediators. Instead, she is asking neighbours to talk with the protesters and reach a deal with them. Last week, it also emerged that former Mayor Xavier Trias, of the CiU nationalists, had been secretly paying the squatters’ rent and expenses for years with taxpayers’ money to avoid an eviction and street violence.

GIBRALTAR HEAD’S BIG BREXIT FEARS FABIAN Picardo, Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, has warned that if Brexit followers win the UK Referendum, it could have severe ramifications for the Rock. And, he vows, no form of joint - sovereignty with Spain will ever be discussed.

In fact, he has told The Independent newspaper that Spain can “stick joint-sovereignty where the sun doesn’t shine”! Spain has become increasingly vocal in its attempts to claim Gibraltar in recent years, with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy describing the country as an “anachronism”, and “the last colony in Europe”. Picardo added: “The position in Gibraltar

has not changed, will not change … Gibraltar will always be British. “Senor Margallo - the Spanish Foreign Minister - has been explicit in saying he would be putting the issue of joint-sovereignty for Gibraltar on the table as a prerequisite to Gibraltar having access to the single market in future. “Well, you know what, he can stick that into his autobiography, or anywhere else where the sun doesn’t shine. It’s not going to prosper with the people of

Gibraltar, and that’s on the record.” And his advice is: “Spain needs to wake up and smell the coffee. The Spanish Government needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Gibraltar will never be Spanish.” However, should Britain vote to leave the EU at next month’s Referendum, it could pose serious problems for Gibraltar’s economy. It has boomed in recent years, with rapid growth in its financial services sector and gambling industry. But its economy is dependent upon a workforce of around 10,000 people, who travel through the Spanish frontier every day. In 2013, a major dispute over fishing rights saw Spain’s border police impose punitive controls on movement in and out of Gibraltar. It caused chaos, with six-hour queues of ve-

hicles, coming and going through the single border-crossing. And, said Picardo” “If the UK leaves the EU, Gibraltar will no longer be able to depend on EU laws that ensure the right of freedom of movement. “In past years, we’ve been able to avail ourselves of our rights under the Treaty of Rome … we lose the right to use that legal lever against Spain if we leave the European Union. That is what’s under threat.” And of the fears that Spain could again curtail movement in and out of Gibraltar, Picardo said: “The only person, previously, who thought it was a good idea to close the frontier between Gibraltar and Spain was fascist dictator General Franco. “So I don’t know why it is that the Spanish Government needs lessons from a deceased dictator.”

When asked if he believes David Cameron is fighting effectively to keep Britain in the EU, Picardo replied: “The Prime Minister and I are part of the same team. We’re making the same arguments.” He added: “The Brexit camp is no longer making the economic argument, because the Remain camp has won

the economic argument every single day since the Referendum was called. “Nobody should dare say that those of us who argue for remaining in the European Union are one iota less patriotic than those who suggest we should leave, without being able to substantiate their case with economics.”

Animal-abuse demo speak out against this NEARLY 100 people demonstrated this week outside the Canaries Parliament headquarters in Santa Cruz.

They want the showcasing and caging of wild animals to be prohibited. Members of the platform against animal abuse claim that the Parliament and the Canary Islands Government should

practice. And, they say, measures to address the Islands’ respective councils and the Spanish Government should be taken to ensure that the animals are not mistreated in circuses and other travelling shows. So far, 11 municipalities have agreed to this request, but they want the platform to be extended to all institutions.

Fined, for reserving a spot on the beach A MADRID resident has created a grain of history by becoming the first person in Spain ever to be fined for reserving an earlymorning spot on a beach.

The man, from Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid metropolitan area famed for its music was fined 150 euros for putting down a marker on Torrevieja’s El Cura beach last September. He had saved his place with an umbrella, long before the sun-seekers arrived, to make sure of getting a decent spot. It seemed a harmlessenough gesture, carried out on just about every beach in the world. But he was actually breaking a local law, aimed at preventing the disruption of early-morning beach-cleaning, and people claiming public spaces when they’re not physically present. Between 3-8am, the use of “beach furniture”, such as umbrellas, seats or towels, to reserve space is banned. But this is the first time the

SEVEN people, suspected of being involved in the theft of five paintings by renowned British artist Francis Bacon - worth £26.45m - have been arrested by Spanish police.

The paintings, reported stolen in July 2015, along with a safe containing coin collections and jewellery, have yet to be recovered. Spanish detectives were approached in February by British private investigators, specialising in the recovery of stolen artworks. They had received an email with photographs of the Bacon works, ask-

law has been enforced. Apparently, beach monitors had walked by the umbrella and, seeing no one there, removed it and wrote out the fine. The man argued that he had simply gone for a swim, leaving his umbrella behind. And maintained the monitors had taken advantage of him vacating the spot momentarily. But the local government didn’t see it that way, and Torrevieja Beach Councillor Javier Manzanares told TV programme Hoy por Hoy that the city’s intention was to “prevent the private use of beaches”. He added: “People who live in Torrevieja know that there are people who come at 5.30am, place their umbrella and their things right at the front of the beach, and then leave.” The city’s website states that it takes its beach policies seriously, promising to “monitor all activities taking place on the beaches … ensuring the future development and improvement of the environmental quality of the beaches”.

Microsoft-Facebook cable brings high-speed internet IN a bid to improve internet connections between the US and Europe, Microsoft and Facebook plan to lay a latest-generation submarine cable under the Atlantic.

The giant tech companies say the cable will provide significantly faster online speeds, as well as better cloudcomputing services. The cable, nicknamed “Marea”, will boast a capacity of around 160 terabytes per second 16 million times faster than a domestic connection - making the transatlantic cable the fastest broadband globally.

Its eight pairs of fibres will connect the 6,600km between a North Virginia data centre and the Spanish province of Bizkaia, in the Basque Country. From there, it will be distributed to other centres in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The project will be operated by Telxius, a new infrastructure company set up by Telefónica, Spain’s leading telecoms operator. Microsoft will use the new cable to improve its cloud-based services such as Azure, as well as Xbox, Skype and Office. The cable’s route begins further south than other transatlantic connections, which normally depart from New York. It will provide a more flexible and secure connection for customers in

the US and Europe, and it will also give priority to Facebook and Microsoft services. On behalf of Facebook, Najam Ahmad, vicepresident of network technology, said his company “was always evaluating new technologies and systems to provide the best connectivity possible”. The aim of both companies is to meet their customers’ growing and increasingly- complex connection and dataconsumption requirements, and to speed up the development of the latest generation of internet infrastructure. Marea will have open infrastructure, meaning it will be a cable which can operate using technology from a range of manufacturers. The design will mean cheaper costs for

customers and better equipment, which could translate into the growth of broadband ratios by using fibre optics in the future. Construction of the cable, which begins in August, is scheduled to finish in October 2017. Facebook and Microsoft are working with Telxius to benefit from Telefónica’s experience and know-how with underwater cables. The company, which will operate and manage the system, will also be able to sell capacity as part of its wholesale. infrastructure business. Rafael Arranz, the company’s head of operations, said: “Working with Facebook and Microsoft on this project will reinforce Telxius’ leadership and allow us to capture new market opportunities.”

Bacon art thefts - seven arrested

ing if they were listed as stolen. Investigators analysed the photographs and determined that the camera which took the images was owned by a photographic-equipment rental company. The firm then supplied the details of the customer who had rented it, at the time the paintings were photographed. The customer was among those arrested, along with a Madrid

art-dealer and his son. Sources close to the investigation said in March that the theft appeared to have been a highlyprofessional operation, carried out while the owner was away in London - robbers disabling the alarm system. The owner of the paintings was, reportedly, a close friend of Bacon. The Irish-born artist died in Madrid in 1992, aged 82, and his expressionist-surrealist works,

which are often raw and emotional, still remain highly-sought-after. Bacon’s death served only to enhance his reputation, and the 2013 sale of his 1969 work, Three Studies of Lucien Freud, fetched more than £135m at auction, which was then a world record. Art-market information leader Artprice lists Bacon as one of 10 front-line modern artists, alongside Picasso and Andy Warhol.

Tourism blooming in Canary Islands SPAIN welcomed 18.1 million foreign tourists between January and April, which was 13% more than the same 2015 period, according to National Institute of Estadísica (INE) statistics.

In April alone, tourist spots received nearly 6.1m visitors - 11.3% more than in the same month last year. The UK provided 18.3% of

that total, adding up to 1,406,522 tourists. Between March and April, when Easter is celebrated, more than 10.9m foreign tourists chose Spain. That was 13.4% up on last year’s same period. From January to April, Britain - the main source market of tourists to Spain - recorded a 19.4% rise, with more than four million visitors, and accumulated 22.3% of total arrivals. The Brits were followed by France, adding 2.7m to the interna-

tional tally, representing an increase of 9.5%. Then came Germany, with 14.4% of the total - a 6.7% growth to over 2.6m visitors. The Nordics, the fourth source market with 9.2% of the total, supplied 13.3% more tourists in the first quarter to 1.7m. Meanwhile, Italy (5.6% of total) increased by 10.5% the number of tourists arriving in Spain to total more than a million travellers. And visitors from the Netherlands increased by 25.5% to 789,997 ar-

More poor people need help in Tenerife capital THE first quarter of 2016 continues to show figures for concern about those in need of basic life supplies in Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, with more than 26% extra people requiring help.

The Municipal Institute of Social Care (IMAS) has noted that increase, and the Economic Benefits Social Assistance (PEAS) is aware that supplies and items, such as spectacles, hearing aids and dentist bills, have also risen hugely. Overall, from January to March, there have been 5,573 grants, compared with the 4,420 granted in the same 2014 period. PEAS says the additional 1,153 cases have pushed the bill up to 1,308,713 euros, which is over 500,000 euros more

than in the previous quarter. The total budget for the IMAS and PEAS is 3.3m euros, which means that nearly half the year’s budget has already been spent. But Santa Cruz Social Care Councillor Oscar Garcia is not concerned, promising: “This will not pose any problem since, like other years, the necessary contributions will be made from

other chapters or areas to meet the needs of the families.” He added: “We increased aid by 26% over the previous year - we responded with more money - and the needs of our neighbours comes first. “Now, we need to focus on other problems such as housing or dependence, and issues such as supplies or rents for the homeless.”

rivals, becoming the sixth-best tourist suppliers. From the US, there were 6.8% more tourists (422,870), while the Republic of Ireland recorded the highest increase, with 25.6% more flying over. The Canary Islands was the first destination chosen in the January -April period, with 4.5 million foreign visitors up 11.3%. The Canaries was followed by Catalonia, which received 4.2 million foreign tourists, up 6.2% and represent-

ing 23.4% of the total, and Andalusia (14.9%), which greeted 2.7m international tourists - up 20.7%. Then came Valencia (20.2%), with nearly 1.9m visitors and 10.3% of the total, and the Community of Madrid, whose figures rose by 10.8% to 1.7m, accounting for 9.5% of total inflows. The Balearic Islands, with more than 1.4m passengers to April, ranked just fifth by visitor numbers, despite registering the highest increase, of 21.9%.

Difficult times for Canarians NEARLY 35% of Canarian households experienced “great difficulty” in making ends meet last year, and, unsurprisingly, the Archipelago was also among the regions with the highest risk of poverty (28.5%).

It also had the lowest average income per person, with 8,640 euros per year, according to the survey of living conditions, conducted by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Sadly, the Archipelago also led in the other categories as well, with 67.7% of households unable to cope with unforeseen expenses. Nearly 58% could not afford to take a holiday at least one week a year, and 18.1% accumulated late payments related to rents or mortgages. Throughout Spain, 39.4% households had no capacity to handle unforeseen expenses in 2015, which was the lowest percentage since 2011 (37.8%).

Pele’s legendary lifetime auction BRAZILIAN football legend Pele, the only player to secure three World Cup-winning medals, has been the recipient of an amazing collection of strange and exotic items from around the world.

They were accumulated, first in his playing days, and then as a roving, sporting and humanitarian ambassador. The gifts he has received over the years include everything, from elaborate crowns and ceremonial daggers, model ships and jet fighters, to more prosaic clocks, dishes, and freedom-of-the-city keys from various municipalities. Now, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the 75-yearold FIFA Player of the Century, is to auction off all the sporting and cultural memorabilia he has accumulated as Pele in a lifetime in football. The sale, which takes place in London from Tuesday to Thursday (7th-9th June), covers the six decades from when Pele signed for Santos as a 15-year-old in 1956. Going under the hammer will be unique football items, including his three World Cup winner’s medals, collected in 1958 (as a 17-yearold), 1962 (as a squad member after injury) and 1970, when a one-

off J u les Rimet trophy was made for him after Brazil’s famous 4-1 triumph against Italy in Mexico. That World Cup replica is the most expensive item in the auction, with an estimated price tag of £281,000£420,000. The medals are expected to fetch up to £141,000 each, and the ball with which he scored his 1,000th goal

should sell for £28,000£42,000. Beverly H i l l s b a s e d Julien’s Auctions has been chosen to handle the London sale, which also includes personal items such as old passports and driving licences. Apart from his glory days in Brazil, Pele helped transform football in the US in the Seventies, playing for New York Cosmos, and a match-worn shirt from that period is also for sale. Over the past 12 months, Pele has been in hospital for back, hip and prostate surgery, so is he is now selling for health or business reasons?

Dan Nelles, sports specialist at Julien’s Auctions, says: “There are many reasons. There are clearly some personal ones that he alone knows about.” But Pele says: “It was a difficult decision to make, but it takes a lot to care for these artefacts properly, and I felt I could do much more good by sharing these items with the world, as well as helping the causes that are important to me.” Mr Nelles adds: “He had a lot of the property in storage, and it wasn’t seeing the light of day, which this auction now allows. “Also, he wasn’t sure what items his family wanted to keep, and he didn’t want the collection to fall by the wayside. “And the Pequeno Principe paediatric hos-

pital in Brazil, which he supports, will receive a proportion.” Mr Nelles says the auction house’s “conservative estimate” is that the sale will make between £2.5m and £3.5m. He adds: “The bidding will determine the final price. There are so many wild-cards in the auction - the Jules Rimet trophy, his World Cup medals, soccer boots. That means, ideally, we are looking at three times that conservative estimate, and maybe as much as 10 times. There are also a great number of game-worn items from his career.” Mr Nelles expects a broad spectrum of bidders, from football fans and collectors, to sporting museums and business corporations. “Although the auction is in London, it will be streamed live on our website for overseas bidders to take part,” he says. And, as well as interest from the obvious football hotbeds of Europe and South America, he knows that there will also be interest from China, Japan and South Korea, Dubai and other Gulf states, plus the US, Canada and Mexico. A pair of black football boots, worn by Pele in the film Escape to Victory, are also being sold. He starred alongside Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine, as well as England’s late, World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore - they became ardent admirers of each other and true friends as well, Pele say-

ing: “He was the greatest defender I ever played against.” They portrayed Nazi prisoners playing a propaganda football match during World War Two. Pele is seen near the end of the film, wearing the black boots as he scores with a dramatic bicycle-kick to equalise for the Allied team. “I understand the film has a bit of a cult following in the UK, and these boots are certainly out of the norm,” says Mr Nelles. “I think there will be great interest in this highlight from his film career.” Pele holds the record as the youngest player ever to play in, and score in, a World Cup final. He also holds the Guinness World Record for goals scored in a career with 1,283. He played for Brazil’s World Cup-winning teams of 1958 and 1970, scoring in both finals, and he was in the squad who won in 1962. Groin injuries sidelined him for the latter part of the tournament. Pele is many people’s choice as the finest player of all time. He remains the world’s most recognisable player, with a Hollywood biopic Birth of A Legend recently being premiered in New York. Now the enduring, endearing proof of that legendary status has been laid out over more than 1,500 lots, the auctioneers saying confidently that there should be “something for everyone”.

Model gets 15 years for killing ex-lover A SLOVAKIAN swimwear model has been jailed for 15 years for murdering her former boyfriend - a British millionaire - after shooting him twice in the head.

Mayka Kukucova had another six months added to her sentence for breaking into Andrew Bush’s Costa del Sol home, near Marbella, where she killed him. She was also ordered to pay Mr Bush’s 21-year-old daughter Ellie £122,000 and his sister Rachel £30,500 to compensate for

their loss. But the 26-year-old model told the Malaga court she “never meant to hurt” him, protesting that the former jewellerystore owner died during a violent struggle - and she broke down in tears when photos of his body were shown in court. Mr Bush, 48, had returned home unex-

pectedly from a UK trip with his current partner, while his exgirlfriend was in his house collecting her things. Kukucova admitted that “shots were fired” during the fight, on 4th April, 2014, but denied murder, saying she had acted in self-defence. But she failed to convince the jury and was

convicted of murder last Friday. Mr Bush, well-known in his home city of Bristol through his jewellery business, was previously married to former TV presenter Sam Mason, the mother of Ellie. He met Kukucova when she worked in his shop, and the pair were together for 2½ years. The relationship broke down some six months before his killing. He was known for having a keen interest in cars, and Kukucova made her getaway on the night he died in his four-wheel-drive Hummer wagon, in which he had arrived. Kukucova handed herself in to Slovakian authorities days later and was detained, before being extradited to Spain. Rachel Bush said in evidence: “It was very hard to see Kukucova there in court, telling those lies.” And Ellie MasonBush, in a tearful tribute to her father, told the court: “He was my only parent growing up. He was the only person that I had.” She said that despite he and Kukucova splitting up, “he was still

supporting her and still wanted to help her”. Maria Korotaeva, Mr Bush’s girlfriend at the time, was sitting outside in the Hummer, waiting for her partner while he was being killed indoors. Giving her account of the night, she told the court: “I never imagined what was happening. Andy had never said anything bad about her - just that he couldn’t be with her any more.” Before the verdict, she posted a picture of herself with Rachel and Ellie on Instagram captioned: “Me, Ellie and Rachel Bush yesterday night in Malaga. We will do anything in our power to get justice.” Following the verdict, Ellie said: ‘She’s finally got a little bit of what she deserves after what she’s put this family through. It’s been a tremendous ordeal to go through. “We are just glad this chapter is finally done and we can move forward with our lives, knowing that we got the justice we came here to get. “We’re really happy with the verdict - we came a long way to get where we are.”

The Sandbanks are paved with castles of gold! BRITAIN’S most expensive seaside town in which to live is Dorset’s Sandbanks, the tiny playground for millionaires, where the average house price is nearly £665,000.

Salcombe in Devon, where the average home is worth £539,950, was runner-up, according to Halifax’s Seaside Town Review. In fact, eight of the top-10 most expensive seaside towns were in south-west England. The least expensive area was Scotland’s Port Bannatyne, on the Isle of Bute, where the average house price is £77,132. But North Berwick has become Scotland’s most expensive seaside town, according to a Bank of Scotland report, which says the average house price there is £327,124. For the report, Halifax used house price figures from the Land Registry and the Registers of Scotland, covering 196 seaside towns across Britain. Padstow, Dartmouth, Fowey, St Mawes and Wadebridge, in southwest England, were all on the list of seaside

Online shoppers get best of both worlds NEARLY twothirds of online shoppers, who bought women’s clothes in the last six months, sent at least one item back.

And so-called “serial returners” are blamed for pushing up prices. Researchers, who questioned more than 1,000 online shoppers, found that women’s clothing had been returned by 63% of them. Retailers said free returns were an important part of their business, even though the costs had to be recovered somewhere or they risked going under. Consumer analysts Savvy Marketing compiled the figures for BBC Radio 4’s “You and Yours” programme. It found that 56% of all people questioned, who bought any type of clothing online in the six months up to May 2016, had sent one or more items back. And the figure was higher for women’s clothes. The research also suggested that people aged between 18-24 were twice as likely as their parents to shop on the internet using their smartphones. Savvy Marketing’s Catherine Shuttleworth

said: “The Smartphone revolution has made shopping ever nearer - it is right next to our purse or our wallet. “That immediacy and ability to buy things whenever you want is really important to that generation.” Student Emily Murray, one of this new generation of shoppers, said she bought a lot online, especially for occasions when she did not want pictures of herself “popping up repeatedly in the same dress on Facebook”. She also said it was “near impossible” to know which would fit her, so she ordered different sizes. “I end up sending back pretty much half of what I buy, and it might even be more,” she added. And many shoppers say the same thing, ordering up to three sizes

of an item, and returning the other two which don’t fit. Many of the returns are passed on to logistics firms around the country, which handle returned goods for major retailers. Clipper chief Tony Mannix said the brands he worked with did not want to be associated with the vast quantities of returns he handles at any one time - enough to cover “40 Premier League football pitches”. You and Yours reporter Samantha Fenwick, who visited a Clipper plant at a secret Yorkshire location, said some of the clothes did not come back in peak condition. She described lipstick stains and other clear signs that they had been worn. And Mr Mannix said about 5% ended

up “being binned”. “The first check we do is what’s called the ‘sniff test’, because new clothes smell like new clothes,” he said, describing the checks they use to see if a garment has been washed or worn. Such wastage can be a big problem for retailers. Recent Barclaycard research suggested that one in five online businesses had increased prices to cover the cost of managing and processing customer returns. By law, retailers must offer customers the option of returning goods bought online within 14 days. Once shoppers have informed the retailer, they have another 14 days to return the goods - and they must be refunded within 14 days of the retailer receiving

the goods back. Lavish Alice’s Lee Bloor said they had no idea about the returns issue when they started the business Younger shoppers are more likely to take up that offer, and they don’t have to provide a reason for the return, although retailers often ask for one. Bloor, believes the boom in e-commerce means shoppers now have a different relationship with clothes, compared with when they just visited a bricksand-mortar store. “You would try it on, you would touch it, you would feel it, you would see how it fits in the changing room,” he said. “And when you’d made that purchase, you were more likely to keep hold of it. “Whereas these days, we are noticing a trend of consumers buying multiple sizes of the same product so they use their bedrooms as their changing rooms.” Dealing with all those returns is a challenge for businesses, but Emily Murray is unrepentant about her shopping habits, spending plenty of money with online retailers. She says: “They shouldn’t advertise free returns and free deliveries if that’s a problem for them.”

Here’s a tweet: We’re taking easy approach TWITTER is planning a revamp of some of its rules later this year to make it much easier to use. Members will be able to add multi-media to tweets - including pictures and videos without eating into the 140-characters-a-post limit. It is also changing the way it handles conversations between users, and Jack Dorsey, Twitter co-founder and Chief Executive, says his aim is to ensure that “when people tweet, it makes sense”. One analyst said it marked a “positive change”, but added that the company had addressed just “one

symptom” of Twitter’s difficulty in increasing its audience. Despite constant references to tweets in the news over the past year, Twitter has struggled to attract fresh users to its platform - a problem partly blamed on it being confusing. Dorsey added: “One of the biggest priorities for us this year is to really refine our product, to make it simpler. “I think there’s a story to be told about what Twitter’s for, and to continue to strengthen why you would use Twitter.” The Bloomberg news agency reported that some of the details

were, for the most part, welcomed by users. The changes involve the following: *Media attachments, such as photos and videos, will no longer count towards the character limit. *@names in reply to tweets will not be counted. *People will be able to retweet and quotetweet themselves, enabling them to resurface any of their previous posts and add new commentary. *In addition, any new tweet - one that isn’t a reply to someone else’s tweet - that starts with a user-name will now be seen by all of a person’s

followers. Twitter officials want to make it easier for new users to get to grips with how it works. And that last change does away with one of Twitter’s more baffling systems, in which posts beginning with a username would be seen by a person’s followers only if he/she were also following the member mentioned at the start of the tweet. To over-ride the rule, people have been adding a full stop to their tweets, so that they read “.@username”. But Dorsey admitted: “It doesn’t make sense to anyone, and people have had to work around

it. It just looks ugly.” Brian Blau, an analyst at the Gartner consultancy, said Twitter’s hopes of gaining new users would not be solved with these changes. “The core problem is attracting new users and getting them to be loyal users over time,” he stressed. “And we haven’t yet seen anything from Twitter that leads me to believe they’re addressing that fundamental problem.” Changes to the social media site will not be made until later this year, to allow developers to integrate the new rules into their thirdparty apps and websites.

Kidnapped Mexico star is found, safe and sound

MEXICAN international footballer Alan Pulido, kidnapped by an armed gang in the early hours of last Sunday, was found safe and well, say authorities. The 25-year-old striker, who plays for Greek side Olympiakos, was abducted after leaving a party near his hometown of Ciudad Victoria. Happily, a massive search operation, launched in the crimeplagued northern state of Tamaulipas, proved successful. In a statement on Monday, Mexico security forces said his rescue took place shortly after midnight and involved state and federal police. It added that Pulido was being medically assessed, pictures showing him with a bandaged right hand. The Mexico striker told reporters outside state police offices that he was “very well, thank God”. Tamaulipas governor Egidio Torre Cantu said: “The most important thing is that he is here - he is with us and he is safe, and that is what we really wanted to inform you, as you can see.” Local media reported that Pulido was with his girlfriend at the party, and that the car they were travelling in was intercepted by a convoy of vans, which blocked the road and forced him out of the vehicle. The woman, who was released almost immediately, said she did not know where Pulido had been taken. Tamaulipas is one of Mexico’s most dangerous states, with rampant drug-trafficking and kidnappings. Out of a total of 26,000 people reported missing in Mexico last year, around 5,000 people are listed as “disappeared” in that state.

Aussie croc snatches late-night swimmer A WOMAN who went night swimming off an Australian beach last Sunday is still missing after being attacked by a crocodile.

The 46-year-old Australian was with her friend in shallow water at Thornton Beach, Queensland, when she was pulled under. The friend attempted to rescue the woman from the reptile’s jaws but was unable to do so. Searchers scoured the area in a rescue helicopter fitted with thermal-imaging equipment but failed to find any trace of the victim. Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman Neil Noble said: “The report that we have from the surviving woman is that they felt a nudge; her partner started to scream and was then dragged into the water.” Senior Constable Russell Parker, from the local police, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: “Her 47-year-old friend tried to grab her and drag her to safety, but she just wasn’t able to do that.”

Reports on the water depth varied, police saying it was waistdeep and paramedics saying she was up to her knees. The survivor was taken to a nearby hospital suffering from shock and a minor arm injury. Mr Parker said the pair might not have known of the dangers at the beach, which is next to a creek where crocodile-spotting tours take place. There are warning signs about crocodiles throughout the area. Local MP Warren Enstch said the women had to accept some of the blame, stressing “You can’t legislate against human stupidity. If you go in swimming at 10 o’clock at night, you’re going to get consumed.” The attack took place close to where a fiveyear-old boy was attacked and killed in 2009. And in 1985, a giant crocodile known as Big Jim took local postal worker Beryl Wruck while she was having a late-night swim, about an hour’s drive from Thornton Beach. Crocodile numbers have surged in northern Australia since the animals became a protected species in 1971.

EU fraud is linked to the poorest countries THE European Union lost an estimated £675 million to fraud last year, and the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) says many of the false claims were concentrated in Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary - some of the trading bloc’s poorest states. One of the 1,400 fraud allegations investigated involved a £1m payment to a factory, which wanted to upgrade equipment to chill vegetables. When the transaction was investigated, officials found the equipment supplier and the factory owner were, in fact, the same person - and that the price of the machinery had been inflated. Another common scam saw importers of Chinese solar panels falsify documents about where they

had come from, which meant that EU authorities missed out on import duties. Although the fraud amounts to just 0.6% of the EU budget, any misuse of funds is a sensitive issue, particularly coming ahead of the upcoming UK referendum. In its annual report, OLAF said the funds paid out to dishonest claimants had fallen by £10m against the 2014 figures. And Giovanni Kessler, the organisation’s director-general, does not believe there is widespread corruption concerning the union’s funds, and how they are dispersed. But some officials believe that member states should do more to pursue those who defraud the EU, especially because just £142m of illicit cash was recovered in 2015.

Sugar-tax farce as worst offenders simply ignored CRITICS of Britain’s sugar tax believe it will be a random burden on the poor, and doesn’t take the actual content of drinks into account.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance (TPA) says some beverages full of sugar will be exempt from the “bungled” levy, which was announced in the Chancellor’s most recent Budget. The TPA is calling for the measure to be scrapped after carrying out a comparison of 49 drinks, including fizzy and energy drinks that will be taxed, and milkbased ones and coffees that will not. But the Treasury argued that the tax was a “major step forward” in the fight against childhood obesity. It also said the extra money raised would fund more school sports and expand school breakfast clubs. The TPA exercise found that Coca-Cola, with 10.6gm of sugar per 100ml, will be subject to the tax, but a Starbucks “signature” hot chocolate with

whipped cream and coconut milk, which has 11gm of sugar per 100ml, won’t be. The group’s study also noted that energy drinks such as Monster Origin (11gm/100ml), will be taxed, but Tesco’s chocolate flavoured milk (12.4g/100ml), will not be. In fact, the 10 most sugary drinks analysed by the TPA will not be subject to the levy. Jonathan Isaby, TPA Chief Executive said the policy had “descended into farce”, adding: “Our results suggest to us that the Government has not thought through this

proposal whatsoever, and we’re calling for them to scrap it. “The Government should strangle it at birth, before the thing even gets off the ground. It will be a huge administrative burden, and it will hit the poorest hardest, in terms of the weekly shop.” A Treasury spokesman said: “Treating obesity and its consequences costs the taxpayer £5.1bn every year. “The levy will be charged on soft drinks because they are the main source of added sugar in children’s and teenagers’ diets, many with no intrinsic nutritional value.

“Health experts agree there is a specific problem with sugar-laden fizzy drinks that must be addressed. “One can of cola could contain nine teaspoons of sugar, well over the recommended daily limit for our children. “The money from the levy will go towards funding more school sport, and expanding school breakfast clubs. “The levy is designed so that producers don’t have to pass the tax on to consumers and, if they change their product mix to reduce sugar content, then they will pay less or no tax.”

Cock-and-bull story! A WEIRD ruling by the council, nicknamed the “bikini by-law”, has been passed in a seaside village in Almeria, Andalucia, and it includes a ban on walking along with phallic symbols.

These include blowup versions of female dolls and sensitive parts of the male anatomy! The official “co-existence and citizenship” law, initially announced by Mojacar Council last November, also prohibits the wearing of swimwear in the street, and wearing fancy-dress costumes for stag and hen par-

ties “in a style which may cause sexual, religious or racist offence”. Flouting the by-law could result in a fine of up to 1,000 euros if the offence occurs in busy areas, or in the presence of children.

The Council’s PSOE leader, Manuel Zamora, protested that news of someone being fined in Mojacar for wearing a bikini would “spread like wildfire” via the press, and would discourage people from

holidaying in the resort. And the opposition groups also wondered how the law would be implemented, because it was somewhat ambiguous and open to interpretation. But Mojacar Mayor Rosa Maria Cano said the law, which did not prohibit fun or celebrations, was aimed at promoting family tourism and preventing the town becoming the “new Magaluf ”. Rather tamely, the law also targets youngsters playing ball games, or skateboarding in the streets. And it gives the local police the right to confiscate items being used irresponsibly. But where on earth would they store the blow-up items? Unless, course, they deflated them first!

Sterling gets a boost

By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct

HERE we are, with fewer than three weeks to go until the EU Referendum, and, according to The Guardian newspaper last week, 14% of the voters are unsure which way to vote.

Senior officials’ comments regarding the risks to the UK economy - should there be a Brexit - appeared to have hit home with the voting public earlier this

week. The polls showed Remain were holding a small lead at 44%, with Leave close behind at 40%. But Brexit followers have since gained grounds. UK Retail Sales figures came in a lot higher than expected, as did Government borrowing; both of which gave sterling a boost that continued into last week. The pound surged to a four-month high against the euro as the Greek bail-out discussions continued in Brussels. But the euro found some ground after the new loans for Greece were agreed by Eurozone Ministers. So, what we can we expect in the coming weeks? Volatility will continue. Apart from

economic data, sterling movement will be governed mainly by how the Referendum vote polls move. With this volatility, particularly, it is so important to let your currency provider keep up to date with the market on your behalf, achieving the best rate for buying or selling euros.

Here in the Canaries, 2-3 cents difference on the rate for buying a property can go a long way towards, say, new furniture, repairs or even legal fees. In my last column I discussed the limit order, which was how to make sure you don’t miss the currency rate you are hoping to achieve.

There are other options, too. For example, you can set an automatic Rate Watch. Simply decide on the rate you would like, and receive an email and/or text message when it is available. If your date of completion to buy or sell a property is later in the year, after the date of the Referendum, then a Time Option might be worth considering. This is where you book the current rate with a small deposit and we buy the currency for you - like a buy-now, pay-later. That rate is then guaranteed for up to 12 months. Yes, you take a chance that the pound to euro may move further in your favour in the interim. However, at least you

know the rate won’t be lower or higher if it moves against you. And you can budget accordingly, making sure you don’t miss out on your property, or that you get the most sterling for your euros. Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, keep on top of the currency market. The friendly experts at Currencies Direct are just a phone call away whenever you need them. At home in Spain since 1999, Currencies Direct have 12 offices across the country, including one in Tenerife, and are set to open more Spanish offices soon. ‘People-smuggling’ Brits held in Kent TWO British men have been charged with people-smuggling after two boats, carrying 18 illegal Albanian migrants, were picked up off the Kent coast at Dymchurch, near Folkstone, following a sea-and-helicopter rescue on Sunday.

Mark Stribling, 35, and Robert Stilwell, 33, were charged under the Im-

migration Act of 1971 by local magistrates on Monday. Rescuers saved the group when their small, inflatable boats began taking on water in the early hours of the morning in the English Channel. A coastguard helicopter and two lifeboats were scrambled after those on board made panicky phone calls to their families in Calais at around 11.30pm on Saturday to say they were in difficulties.

Their families then contacted French and UK authorities, who sparked a major air and sea search. All on board were safely transferred to the RNLI lifeboats. The incident has raised concerns that the English Channel may become the “new” Mediterranean Sea, which has seen the biggest movement of asylumseekers into Europe since World War II. At least 1,475 migrants, crammed into boats, have died this

year while attempting to make the perilous journey in the Med. Three boats sank there in the past fortnight, and officials fear the death toll could soar to more than 700. Meanwhile, another British man, arrested at Chichester marina in West Sussex last week with 17 suspected Albanian migrants, is wanted on suspicion of murder in Spain. Authorities there had issued a European arrest warrant for the

55-year-old, who is in custody, pending interviews by immigration enforcement investigators. He was detained on suspicion of “facilitating illegal immigration” - and the 17 men were held on suspicion of entering the UK illegally, pending a Home Office review of their cases. The discovery comes weeks after the National Crime Agency revealed that migrants trying to reach the UK were each paying smuggling gangs

Migrant tragedy magnified THE heart-rending tragedy of migrants and refugees trying to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean has this week been spelled out starkly by the UN’s refugee agency. New figures from the UNHCR show that more than 2,500 migrants and refugees have died already this year. The agency says that 2016 is “proving to be particularly deadly”, after revealing that at least 880 people died trying to cross the sea

in the last week or so alone, after vessels capsized or were shipwrecked. The figure for 2016 so far compares with the 1,855 people lost in the same period last year. And, said William Spindler, spokesman for the UNHCR: “At the moment, smugglers are packing people on boats that are barely sea-worthy - and in many cases are not meant to make the crossing. “What happens is that as soon as they depart from shore, they call for

rescuers, and then rescue services come and rescue them.” He added: “It’s a race against time to get there before the boats sink, and in some cases, it gets there too late.” On Saturday, the Italian coastguard co-ordinated the rescue of 668 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean. They took place in the Sicily Channel, off the Libyan coast, and were carried out by various ships from the Italian navy, the European

Union Naval Force in the Mediterranean and the Irish navy. The UNHCR’s updated figures were produced after the agency interviewed survivors brought to Italy. Authorities and international organisations had previously reported that some 700 migrants and refugees had died in shipwrecks over three days last week, the highest-known tally in more than a year. Mr Spindler also repeated the UNHCR’s appeal to the European

Union to allow for more legal means for refugees to reach Europe. He said it was “shameful” the bloc had resettled fewer than 2,000 people after a plan to resettle 160,000 was revealed last year. According to the International Organisation for Migration, 204,311 migrants or refugees have crossed the sea since the beginning of this year. And the influx is increasing with favourable weather conditions and calm seas.

up to £13,500 for the journey. Some of those intent on coming to Britain are quoted five-figure sums to make the trip by air, while others are believed to have spent as much as £12,000 to travel from France inflatable boats. The desperation of some migrants to reach Britain was highlighted in April when two Iranian men were found floating in an illequipped dinghy in the English Channel. A light on their mobile phone alerted a passing ship in the Dover Strait - one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world before they were picked up. Investigators suspect that apart from the main Calais-Dover crossing, people-smugglers are using less-busier UK ports, including Tilbury, Purfleet, Hull, Immingham and Newhaven. A Home Office spokesman said: “The security of our border is paramount. We work with our partners to detect and deter people who attempt to reach the UK illegally, while targeting the criminal gangs behind illegal entry attempts.”

Fraud - How They Steal Your ID

Don't Miss...

Friday 3rd June, ITV1, 21.00 “Fraudsters will pose as whoever they need to be to elicit personal details from you. Whether they portray themselves on the phone to be a banking institution or some other corporate organisation, whatever they need to be they will be in order to commit fraud.” – Det. Chief Supt. David Clark, the City Of London Police. In this new documentary for ITV, detectives hunt an elusive major criminal who has hijacked the credit card accounts and identities of hundreds of British victims. Dubbed by detectives as ‘Mr Posh’, he is a master of disguise and accents. Every day he telephones the banks posing as different customers, impersonating everyone from a female pensioner to an Asian businessman. He’s tricked the banks and traumatised his victims, stealing tens of thousands of pounds a day. ‘Mr Posh’ has mastered a new crime known as telephone banking fraud, which increased by 95 per cent in the first six months of 2015 and resulted in thousands of British victims collectively losing over £14 million. With only a voice to go on, capturing ‘Mr Posh’ will not be easy. Over six months detectives from the City of London and Metropolitan Police use cutting-edge technology and good old-fashioned police work to unmask and capture an evasive criminal. Fraud - How They Steal Your ID is produced by Wild Pictures, the company behind acclaimed ITV documentariesHMP Aylesbury, Strangeways, Fraud Squad and Abducted. The documentary has exclusive access to the Dedicated Card and Payment Crime Unit. Funded by the banks, detectives from the City of London and Metropolitan Police form a specialist unit who target the major criminals attacking our bank and credit card accounts. The big new threat the unit is facing is the so-called dark web. Stolen UK credit and debit cards are freely traded on the dark web. Det Sgt Phil Elms states: “It is a total supermarket for illegal trade. Anyone’s credit card could be on here. They have the card numbers, the expiry dates and if there is a second card holder they will have that as well.” Once the criminals have bought your stolen card details on the dark web they still need to extract further personal information before they can take over a victim’s bank or credit card account. ‘Mr Posh’ telephones his victims claiming he is from the bank or an official agency to extract this vital information. Detective Jez Boxall explains: “This type of fraud is building up a real big picture of the inner workings of someone’s personal life. Their security details, where they live, dates of birth and all that needed to commit that type of fraud.” Armed with this information ‘Mr Posh’ is then able to clear the banks’ security questions. Over 18 months ‘Mr Posh’ has targeted dozens of bank and credit card companies and has stolen hundreds of thousands of pounds from Barclaycard customers alone. Kathleen Peacock, a widow from Wakefield, had £4,000 stolen from her Barclaycard account by ‘Mr Posh’. He impersonated her voice to take over her account. Kathleen says: “I felt as if I had been violated in some way especially when he rang and started saying that they were me. They gave my address and my old phone number and I just thought, ‘How has this happened. How do they get all this information?’ It’s made me a bit frightened, I will be honest.”

Art dealer Gordon Watson visits Lord Cholmondeley at Houghton Hall, Norfolk. A descendant of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first prime minister, Lord Cholmondeley continues the tradition of collecting art for the main house and for the grounds of this magnificent stately home. Gordon and Lord Cholmondeley have been friends for some time, but it has been a while since Gordon visited Houghton and he is keen to see what else has been added to the collection. Visiting stately homes always gives Gordon a good excuse to think about what he might be able to add to these historical houses, and today is no exception. Following his visit, Gordon takes a trip to Amsterdam in search of unique contemporary objects and eventually finds himself back at Sotheby’s auction house in London, where life in the art world began for Gordon over 35 years ago. Will Lord Cholmondeley be keen to buy any of the objects that Gordon finds for him?

Peston on Sunday ITV1, 10.00 Produced by Shiver [which produced The ITV Leaders’ Debate in the lead up to the 2015 General Election] and transmitted live from ITV’s The London Studios, the programme marks the channel’s return to politics on Sundays. Providing a distinctive perspective on the major stories of the day, Peston on Sunday will feature in-depth interviews with guests from across the political spectrum as well as figures from across the cultural landscape. The programme will also offer live viewer engagement, led by presenter Allegra Stratton whose interactive screen will provide a portal into reaction on social media as well as the latest talking points from the political blogosphere and beyond. Robert Peston says: “I’m excited by the opportunity to bring to ITV’s viewers a live, Sunday morning programme which will provide a distinctive forum for insight and opinion on what is happening in our world. I want to find out more about the important decision-makers who shape our society, beyond their two-dimensional political profiles. “So this is not purely a political programme. The aim is to exist beyond the Westminster ‘bubble’ to offer an insight into our culture and be part of the national conversation on issues that affect everyone.”

Reg BBC1, 21.00

In June 2003, Reg Keys and his wife Sally return to their home in the Welsh countryside. As they switch on the TV to hear six military policemen have been murdered in Iraq, two men arrive bearing the terrible news that their son, Tom, was among them. Plunged into grief and despair, Sally struggles with the day-to-day reality of having lost her son, while Reg desperately tries to make sense of what has happened. Reg discovers that three weeks prior to his son’s death the army had ordered a scale-down in weapons and communications, leaving the six men with limited resources to defend themselves. Angered by his belief that it was an army blunder, Reg makes a radical decision: to stand against Tony Blair in his home constituency of Sedgefield, in the next General Election, as an independent candidate in opposition to the Iraq war. Reg begins into an intense on-the-ground daily routine of campaigning. Faced by an electorate in a safe Labour seat, the process is exhausting and takes Reg away from Sally, who continues to struggle with her grief. As election night draws in, and the world’s press gathers in Sedgefield, tensions run high as the final count begins to emerge.

In Wild Australia, Ray Mears delves into the spectacularly diverse Australian landscape to look at some of the weird and wonderful life forms that are able to live and survive in the land Down Under. From the expansive waters of the Great Barrier Reef and the vast wilderness of Arnhem Land, to the teeming Cooper Creek billabongs and the ancient heartland of the rainforest, each episode sees Mears explore the dramatic physical geography of the region, the extreme weather conditions that occur there and the wildlife species that have adapted to survive in those environments. Mears encounters rare and extraordinary creatures, such as the prehistoric cassowary bird, the weedy sea dragon, and the tree kangaroo, as well as witnessing a three-month-old humpback whale calf learning to swim in preparation for the long migration to Antarctica. Ray even ventures deep underwater himself as he gets up close with some giant manta rays and green sea turtles. Travelling among the dense eucalyptus forests of the Bush, the scarlet sands of the Red Desert and the dramatic shoreline of the southern coast, Mears meets with local wildlife experts and guides, witnesses the ancient tradition of farming with fire, makes his way through a giant flock of magpie geese as he traverses some dried up mudflats, discovers a gallery of ancient aboriginal art and comes face-to-face with a giant saltwater crocodile. Ray says: “I love Australia, it’s one of my favourite places. Sometimes it just feels amazing to be alive in a wild place like this.” In the final episode of the series, on his journey to the heart of the country, Ray flies past the Uluru monolith on a chopper; camps under the stars and meets many marsupials including the star of the desert: the Red Kangaroo.

The Great British Sewing Bee BBC2, 21:00

The Great British Sewing Bee returns for an eight-part series presented by Claudia Winkleman. It is ‘international week’ as Patrick and Esme set the seven remaining sewers the challenge of tackling techniques and garment styles from other cultures and continents. First up, they face a fiendishly hard-to-follow pattern for a Chinese Qipao-style top. This complex garment has an asymmetrical neckline, fiddly zip insertion and is made in a fabric that frays - not a challenge for the faint-hearted. After battling with brocade, things don’t get any easier on the fabric front as, for their alteration challenge, they are tasked with transforming saris. By repurposing yards and yards of beautifully draped, embroidered georgette, the sewers have just 90 minutes to create totally new, wearable items of clothing with a distinctly eastern flavour.

Thierry Henry: My France, My Euros BBC1, 22.45

Former French international Thierry Henry presents this thought-provoking documentary, which focuses on the stories of Euros gone by, and the social and cultural impact football has across Europe. As France prepares to host the Euros following the recent Paris attacks, Henry explores how something as simple as football can unify a nation and bring people together to celebrate diversity. The documentary considers the impact previous European Championships have had on certain nations, from the success of the Dutch in 1988 to England’s ability to unite the country without lifting the trophy in 1996. Also discussed are the remarkable tales of Denmark in 1992 and Greece in 2004, plus Spain’s first trophy in 44 years at Euro 2008, which has become part of their nation’s history and cultural identity.

Secrets of Growing Up

13:30 ....BBC London News

ITV1, 21.00

14:15... For What It’s Worth

Growing up is the most astonishing transformation: one moment we’re cute and cuddly bundles of joy and everybody loves us, but next we’re bursting with emotions, and spots, and everybody hates us - or so it seems. We reveal the surprising secrets of growing up, that over 20 years turn us from helpless toddlers to wide-eyed children, and from moody teenagers into accomplished adults. As babies we may start on an equal footing, but during early childhood it’s long been the embarrassment of many a small boy that girls develop quicker. Scientists have revealed that the parts of the brain we use for language grow larger in girls, and that can help them understand the world much faster. 5 year old Sienna Adderley from Rugby proved this during an emergency, and likely saved her mum, Katie’s life after she collapsed at home. Despite the turmoil, Sienna deliberately had used the home telephone when contacting the emergency services so the police could trace her address. Such logical thinking was initially believed to not occur until adolescence, however new research shows such behaviour can begin from the age of three. Impressed by her act of bravery, Tim Thorpe of Warwickshire police who received Sienna’s call says: “For a five year old, I thought that was absolutely amazing, any parent in the world would be immensely proud of what she has achieved and what she did on that day”. Boys’ and girls’ brains may differ during early childhood, but their bodies are equally vulnerable to the rough and tumble of growing up. Nature, though has cleverly designed some amazing ways to protect each of us, and these provided 5 year old Jayden Channell from Essex with a miraculous escape when in 2014 he was struck by a car travelling at 35mph. Jayden’s mother Samantha says: “Everyone was in panic, my world had come crashing down”. However he walked away from the accident with a mere graze. By the time we become officially ‘teenagers’ our brains have largely caught up with much of our physical growth and go into overdrive – to develop our intelligence. Jamie Edwards from Preston was 13 when he became the youngest person in the world to build a working nuclear reactor. He overcame fears of radiation to build an experiment that needed 20,000 volts of electricity. Although Jamie’s passion of complex physics is not shared with all teenagers, it inspired a surprising reaction from fellow students. The head-teacher of Jamie’s school says:“Not long after he was just walking down the corridor past these year eleven’s who are oldest pupils in the school, they spontaneously broke in to applause”.

The Big C And Me BBC1, 21.00

In episode two we meet 83 year-old June and her three daughters in the consulting room, as a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is confirmed. The decision to have no treatment imposes a timeframe on June’s life and the effect of this ripples through the generations, as her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren face up to her imminent death. Over the months we see her daughters help her fulfill her bucket list: top of the list, is living long enough to see her youngest granddaughter marry, but as the months pass a continual deterioration is putting this in jeopardy. In Wiltshire, Mikey, a nine year-old boy is rushed into hospital for surgery to remove a brain tumour. We meet him as he begins his chemotherapy. With seven other children to look after, the impact of Mikey’s diagnosis and treatment is felt keenly, as his parents juggle their care for him in hospital and their care of his siblings at home. As his treatment progresses we witness how the large family come together to support one another in tough times and beyond the family, we see how Mikey’s cancer brings the local community together in their support. Meanwhile, at the Royal Marsden in Surrey, 17 year-old Phoebe, receiving treatment for a large tumour found on her kidney, is offered the chance to travel to America for Proton Radiotherapy - a treatment that will be available in the UK in 2018. Juggling schoolwork, a new relationship and cancer treatment is at times overwhelming, but once the decision is made to have Proton Radiotherapy, Phoebe faces it with determination. Using a blog to give vent to her changing emotions, she explores what her cancer diagnosis means.

Six years after a drug trial in India goes horribly wrong, one of the guinea pigs, Mark Henson, is found dead. Young PC Arrash ‘Rash’ Sayyad is sure it’s murder and approaches DS Derek Sands. Sands isn’t convinced but DI Heywood is impressed by Rash and offers him a trainee Detective Constable position. Stefan Kowolski, a junior investigator for the Serious Fraud Office, is working undercover, gathering intelligence on David Leese, the Chief Pharmacist for six London hospitals. Leese is suspected of accepting bribes from pharmaceutical giant UK Remicon - the target of a major SFO investigation. When an incident in Leese’s office places Stefan in a compromising situation, his boss Marcus has to pick up the pieces with SFO Director Eleanor Davies. Encouraged by Marcus, Stefan uses his ingenuity and finds a breakthrough clue. When newly-promoted Rash takes his sister Leila to a duathlon, she catches the eye of Stefan, who’s also competing in the event, Rash is none too pleased and the distraction proves disruptive for them both. Following up on Rash’s instinct that Mark’s death wasn’t suicide, Sands and Rash interview Mark’s former colleague Laura. Rash recognises her from a group photograph he’s seen in Mark’s flat and discovers that not only did Laura and Mark travel together in India, but their friend Steve Mullen has recently died in a hit-and-run. Realising that Steve Mullen was also in the group photo from India, Rash fears Laura could be the next victim, and discovering that she is heading to Canary Wharf station, heads off after her. Meanwhile Henry Williams, another guinea-pig who’s been left mentally scarred from the drug trial, has arranged to meet his online girlfriend, Caroline, at Canary Wharf station. As Rash rushes to Canary Wharf station to follow Laura, both Henry and Rash become witness to unfolding events.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

Megan is Final choice THE last remaining heat for Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2016 finished in great style at Leonardo’s, in Las Americas. And the prize was the last place up for grabs in the Grand Final tomorrow (Saturday) at Showtime, Karting Las Americas.

Judges for the evening were Oasis Fm’s lunchtime show presenter Jenny T, Oasis Fm's John Zammit and DJ Jack, Leonardo’s resident DJ. With almost a

full complement of entrants - everyone still enjoying the England win, and a terrace full to bursting - it fell to Rachael to get us under way. She opened the evening admirably with Fairground Attraction's Perfect, setting the bar for the rest of the night. Billy Kahn, who has attended several heats in search of a Final place, offered another near-perfect rendition of Dean Martin's Sway, receiving a great response from the bulging audience. Angie, who has also attended several heats, knew this would be her last chance to reach the Final and she chose

Running order for the Final, Saturday 4th June at Showtime, Karting Las Americas Kofi-Lee Hopkins-Taylor representing Springers Chelsea Philpott representing Clouseaus Rick Hill representing Churchills Kyle Dean Ward representing Dylans Bar Don Taylor representing the Terrace Bar Zoe Jackson representing The Pub Leigh-Hannah Norton representing the Skybar Marie Steele representing Dreamers Billy Kahn (Wild Card) representing Homes Under the Sun Breakfast show Denise Oddy representing the Palms Pool Bar Alfie Havenhand-Bailey representing Crystals Palace Megan Kelly representing Leonardo’s Nil Van Aelst representing the Penny Farthing Robin Nuyens representing the Albatross Bar Viktoria Marr representing Palms Sports Bar Mauro R F Da Silva representing the Queen Vic

Alesso's Heroes ft. Tove Lo. And, as ever, Angie produced a brilliant performance, giving it her all and drawing a superb response from the crowd. Rita Dionisi, an Italian lady, was to sing next. Rita had been sitting patiently for a long time - the England game delayed the start - and she went for Wonderful World, by Louis Armstrong. It's a tough song but she sang it well, and the crowd liked it. Terry was next with, surprisingly, the 2013 Robbie Williams song Go Gentle. It paid off, and he left the stage to great applause. Megan was sixth with a lovely version of Adele’s One and Only another difficult song, delivered extremely well - and you could tell that the crowd really enjoyed this one. The dubious task of following Megan was down to Guido, whose choice of Frank

Sinatra’s My Way led to a solid performance. Natalie Clair, who has also competed in the last few heats, sang another Adele number, bringing her personal touch to Someone Like You. Norma went in ninth, and she didn’t disappoint. It’s surprising how many entrants have chosen power ballads this year, and Norma, putting everything into the Shirley Bassey classic

I Who Have Nothing, had the entire audience cheering her on. Our next contestant, another Rachael, chose Emeli Sande's Next To Me. She displayed excellent vocal control, and her rich voice suited the song perfectly. Last to go in the qualifying rounds this year was Cora, who also opted for an Adele song, Make You Feel My Love, coming up with yet another sparkling

performance and the crowd loving it! It took a minute or so for the sing-off's final three to be selected: Cora, Megan, and Norma Cora, drawn first, sang Cher's Walking In Memphis, again bringing whoops from the audience. Megan went next, and gave a beautiful rendition of Katharine McPhee's version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It was another solid performance that more that justified her place in the sing-off. Norma then chose Malcolm Roberts' Love Is All, providing another controlled performance, but would it be enough to secure a place in the final? That was down to the judges. After a short break, all three contestants were asked to come to the stage and the winner of heat 15 was announced as Megan. Thanks to all at Leonardo’s: manager Martin, bar staff, waiting staff, DJ Jack and the guv'ner, David Elliott. That completes this year’s heats, and we now turn our attention to The Final, which takes place tomorrow (Saturday, 4th June) at Showtime, Karting Las Americas. Admission is free, doors open at 7.30pm and we start at 9pm. There are 16 finalists (yes, 16, including Billy Kahn, the judges' wildcard). Their ages range from 15 to 72 years, and one of them will walk away with the 1,000euro prize, and title of Winner, TLK 2016. Good luck to them all! We would also like to thank all the competiton's singers for helping to make the 2016 event bigger and better than ever before (more songs featured). We also thank every venue which hosted a heat (more venues than before) and, of course, our Tenerife Loves Karaoke sponsors Bombay Babu Babu Authentic Indian Tandoori Restaurants.

The island of adventure

By Vanessa Vee LET’S take a little look at Lanzarote, one of our neighbouring Canary Islands, which is celebrated for its weather and beaches.

But it’s also a fantastic place for cavers and climbers - the ideal destination if you fancy an adventurous holiday, somewhere hot and sunny. Even if you have no experience of exploring caves, you can still discover the island’s amazing landscapes! Lanzarote is generally considered to be the most volcanic-looking of the Canary Islands, which are all volcanic in origin. Its landscape is often described as almost lunar, covered in solidified lava, craters and all sorts of unusual forma-

tions. And it’s this volcanic history and dramatic landscape which has shaped the numerous caves dotting the island. Curiously, it is often referred to as Lanzagrotty. But it’s hardly that! This Canary Island is all black lava fields, broken up with sugar-cube, white cottages, and the occasional palm tree. And, as on all the Canary Islands, it is dotted with beautiful landscape and scenery, together with enticing beaches dotted along the coast-line, which are also a must. Let’s take a brief look at the main tourist spots Lanzarote has to offer. Costa Teguise, locat-

ed on the eastern side, close to the historic capital of Arrecife, is just 10-15 minutes by car from the airport. It offers all types of accommodations and activities, and is one of the most attractive tourist areas, thanks to an array of lodgings, beaches and services … plus the tranquillity one breathes around it. Definitely one of the preferred areas for families visiting the island. Puerto del Carmen, on the south-east side, is among the most important tourist spots on Lanzarote. There are more than 6km of beaches protected from the trade winds - Grande Beach, Los Pocillos and Matagorda

being the most extensive - and a wide variety of hotels. Puerto del Carmen has a full range of services and numerous entertainment centres along the expansive Las Playas Avenue: stores,

shopping centres, restaurants and bars, recreational centres, pubs, discos and, in general, a vibrant night-life. Playa Blanca, on the south side of Lanzarote, has, through the years, become the third-

largest tourist area on the island. It has won awards for its beauty on various occasions, and this peaceful, pleasant spot is the ideal place for the whole family to relax. Playa Blanca has a wide range of hotels, surrounded by a flourishing service sector: bars, restaurants, businesses, plus one of the best recreational ports in Lanzarote. Of course, there is much, much more on offer than these three areas, just like there is here in Tenerife. But I must point out that this island has something to suit everyone. Call the Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team on 922 751 867 now to ask about their great deals to Lanzarote from Tenerife. For example, a family of four, with flights, transfers and accommodation for one week this summer for under 1,000 euros. Alternatively, you can email travel@tenerifesunshine.com or call into their office on Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos - they’re open seven days a week.

Third place was secured by Ruymán Francisco González, from the IES Agüimes, Gran Canaria, who won 300 euros.

The judging jury highlighted the excellent level of the participants, who had 90 minutes to make their dishes. In addition, the experts said they had tasted original recipes, with an excellent presentation. “If these are the new generations of chefs in the Canaries, then the current professionals today need to be very well prepared,” said one judge.

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS! VINEYARD owners across England and Wales, who once crossed their fingers for decent growing weather, are now keeping them crossed that they can capitalise on a growing demand for home-produced wines.

Back in 1990, the UK produced 1.9 million bottles of wine, according to figures from the Food Standards Agency. And 10 years later that number hadn’t risen at all. But during the next decade the industry started expanding, and more than four million bottles were produced in 2010. It is now predicted that this number could double by 2020! Despite a dreadful 2012, when heavy spring rains and a waterlogged summer caused serious problems for the wineries, some of which scrapped that

year’s vintage altogether, the upbeat Vineyard owners overcame these problems. There are now around 500 vineyards in England and Wales, producing wines which are improving in quality, and gaining international recognition. Simon Roberts, Head Wine-maker at Ridgeview wine estate, who was attending a launch event for English Wine Week, told Sky News why he believes wines from England and Wales are becoming more popular. “I really do think it’s the quality,” he said. “We’re winning international awards ... for the percentage of wines we produce, we’re the most-awarded, wineproducing country in the world. “Which, considering we make five million bottles - set to increase to 10 million bottles in the next five years - is a huge statement.” North Wales winemaker Colin Bennett, of Gwinllan Conwy, has just produced his vineyard’s first vintage.

Colin, with one of just 17 wineries in Wales, hopes to expand his current 1,000-bottles-ayear output to 10,000 by 2021. Like most Wales and England producers, he takes exception to wines labelled as “British wine” which use imported grape juice or concentrates.

English and Welsh wines are from grapes grown here and, as such, have their own distinct flavours. And Colin stressed: “We make beautiful, delicate, fragrant wines, they’re exceptional. “They’re not like a French wine or an Italian wine, and they work with the food of this

valley. We have great seafood here, wonderful lamb … and our wines are styled to go with the great food of the area.” Like Sussex’s Ridgeview, wine from Chapel Down, the Kent-maker, is now being served at functions in Downing Street, in order to promote English wines.

Josh Donaghay-Spire, Chapel Down’s Winemaker, said: “English wine is becoming more and more popular, and I think that is down to a number of factors all coming together. “Advances in a vineyard, better viticulture techniques, better varieties and sites - we’re starting to learn. “There’s better handling of the fruit in the winery, there’s better technology and more experienced staff. And then there’s the consumer perception. People are much more interested in local wine, and local sourcing.” The only thing that can stop the rise of English and Welsh wines, it seems, is the British weather, unsurprisingly. Vines don’t react well to the untimely frosts, heavy rain, cold snaps and extreme-weather events, which are becoming more frequent in the UK. Yet the growers remain undeterred, with 200 new vineyards starting up in the last five years. And more to come, no doubt.

CONCEPTS OF BEAUTY

The antibiotics’ dread

By Carl Pattison

By Val Sainsbury

WHEN it comes to ideas about what makes hair beautiful, there are many concepts which come into play: your opinion, that of your stylist, and what is actually achievable.

WE are probably all aware that the over-use of antibiotics has resulted in superbugs, such as MRSA, becoming out of control.

One person’s idea of gorgeous hair is another one’s horror, and we all know what we like, and what we do not like. Clients don’t tend to relish having their illusions broken regarding what may, or may not, be created with their hair. We all have a set image of how we look, and rarely do we want anyone telling us that this might not be working. Clients tend to think I always send out work that I like. This is mostly true, but, sometimes, it’s not to my taste. But, as long as it’s cut and coloured well, that’s

what is most important. If you prefer to be blonde, but your stylist thinks brown would be better, then it’s a discussion between the two of you as to the whys and why-nots of that colour - or cut. These days, no one comes to the salon with glossy magazines, asking for this or that person’s hair. It’s down to the stylist to work with what you have, and to ask what you would like.

Any stylists worth their salt will guide you through the minefield of a new cut or colour, offering their years of knowledge, free of charge. It’s up to you to find a stylist with whom you have a connection, to create the look you want. So, your concept of what is beautiful should be what helps your stylist give you the hair you really want.

The finer details By Carl Pattison

WHEN asked about what guys like as presents, or what a guy can use to personalise his image, it’s always accessories.

From a watch to a bracelet, a chain to new tie … having or giving a stylish guy these small items adds a personal touch to his wardrobe. They can be expensive, or cheap and cheerful, but they still look cool if put together correctly. Purchasing a watch

is something you must choose with care because it carries you from work to night. And do make sure it blends with the rest of your jewellery, whether it be gold or silver. A chain or bracelet can be inexpensive if it’s a fashion piece, but splash the cash if you want a timeless piece. Having a small collection of ties will ensure that you are always turned out well, as will belts, because this is how you piece together your own individual look. Guys rarely find

time, or make the effort, to shop for these things. So if you do get stuck for gift ideas, remember that these small items always go down well. Cuff-links to tie-pins, man-bags to pocket wallets, these can make excellent gift ideas. But know the taste of your man before you purchase. Fashion comes and goes, but accessories are timeless. Check out most of the fashion retailers because they always have a collection to match the season’s colours and trends.

Another of these deadly bugs, Clostridium difficile, accounts for 700,000 global deaths annually, and this figure could increase to 10 million by 2050. Researchers at Tel Aviv University have discovered that antibiotics could also be a major cause of Britain’s spiralling epidemics of depression and dementia, as well as other mental disorders such as delirium and anxiety. Brain disease might seem wholly unrelated to taking bacteria-killing drugs, but the key to the problem lies in our stomachs. The bacteria in our gut manufacture a variety of chemicals that affect the way our brains function. When we have a healthy balance of this bacteria, these chemicals foster beneficial processes in our brains, such as the growth of new cells in the hippocampus, the brain area responsible for creating memories. It is thought that friendly gut microbes release brain-enhancing chemicals into the gut wall. They are then absorbed into the bloodstream and conveyed to the brain. When the bacterial

balance is upset by taking antibiotics which destroy all gut bugs good and bad alike - the suggestion is that our brains may be starved of chemicals that foster communication between brain cells, and which prevent harmful inflammation. A large study of British patients concluded that taking just one course of antibiotics can significantly raise the risk of depression and anxiety. The Tel Aviv team studied the health records of more than a million Britons from 1995 to 2013, and found that a single course of antibiotics boosted the risk of depression by around a quarter. Taking between two and five courses raises the risk by nearly half, and is also linked with increased risks of anxiety - often a precursor to depression. “This is the first population-based study that demonstrates an association between exposure to antibiotics, and risk for depression and anxiety,” said lead researcher, psychiatrist Dr Ido Lurie The danger for our brains is that, as well as antibiotics killing off friendly bacteria in our guts, they help bad bacteria to multiply.

This can cause the ironic situation where some patients are serially taking antibiotics to cure recurrent bouts of diarrhoea - even though the antibiotics help salmonella infections to thrive. One emerging hope is that scientists can develop a generation of “smart” antibiotics, that attack only bad bugs in the stomach. Professor Simon Carding, an immunologist who leads the Gut Health Programme at the UK Institute of Food Research, recommends avoiding antibiotics where possible. “An incredible number are given to children, even before they go to school,” he said. “That can have a severe impact on good microbes in the gut, which can cause a lifetime of physical - and psychological - problems.” Prof Carding says that feeding good gut bacteria with a healthy diet is a sound strategy for mind-and-body health. “The probiotic drinks you buy in plastic cartons don’t seem so effective. But simply getting five-a-day helpings of fruit and veg is useful, because the fibre in them is beneficial for gut bacteria,” he adds.

Lose weight and reverse diabetes SOME 100,000 people in Britain should be offered weight-loss surgery in the hope of curing their diabetes, say world experts.

A leading group of international diabetes organisations, including Diabetes UK, believes the evidence is now so strong about obesity surgery also reversing type-2 diabetes, that it should be considered a standard treatment option. But prejudice in the medical profession, and pressure on NHS resources, means just 6,000 patients a year are having the procedure. So far, 11 scientific trials have shown that surgery to reduce the size of a patient’s stomach can lower blood sugar levels below the threshold used to diagnose type-2 diabetes. And one study showed that nearly all patients were able to stop taking insulin, or other injectable medication, to control their blood sugar. The condition, affecting around 3.5 million people in the UK, is closely related to obesity. The new guidelines, published in the journal Diabetes Care, say surgery should be considered in people with

type-2 diabetes who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or over. And also those with a BMI of at least 30, and blood sugar-levels which aren’t properly controlled by medication or lifestyle changes. The guidelines are consistent with those already issued by NHS watchdog NICE. But clinical commissioning groups, which fund treatments, widely ignore the recommendations. The operation costs at least £6,000, but, because of future health-care savings, the money is generally recouped within two years. Weight-loss, or bariatric surgery, can include reducing the size of the stomach with a gastric band, or by-passing part of the stomach. Professor Nick Finer, honorary professor at University College London and senior principal clinical scientist with Novo Nordisk, said: “Hopefully, this will drive the NHS to support greater access to this treatment. Sadly, in England, fewer than 1% of people who might benefit are offered surgery. “And at a high level, there is still a refusal to respond to the evidence, so that the numbers of surgeries has been declining over recent years.” Type-2 diabetes is

a major cause of kidney failure, blindness, nerve-damage, amputations, heart-attacks and strokes. Fewer than half of patients manage to control their blood sugar levels with lifestyle changes or drugs. Simon O’Neill, of Diabetes UK, said: “There is a wide body of evidence that shows surgery is an effective treatment option for type-2 diabetes, and can be cost-effective for the NHS. “However, many people who stand to benefit from this potentially,life-saving treatment, are missing out through needless barriers to obesity surgery services. Adrian Ault lost his job in 2014 because of ill-health, brought on by obesity. He weighed 32 stone and suffered from type-2 diabetes. He lost six stone to qualify for surgery and has lost another three stone since the operation, nearly six weeks ago. After being told last week that he no longer had diabetes, Adrian told Sky News: “It was amazing. I got quite emotional. “My mum had diabetes and it was the bane of her life, so it was something that worried me more than lots of the other things. “So this was fantastic news to get.”

By Miruna Voicu YOU have bought your dream holiday home in Tenerife and now, you’re looking forward to coming out to make the most of the sun, and a laidback lifestyle for a while.

But wait, you don´t have any furniture! You might have seen a furnished show-flat, but, generally speaking, properties here are sold empty, without even a light bulb! Or sometimes, even worse, the furniture and furnishings are so old and worn out that you need to replace them. While you probably have a good idea of what you want to achieve hopefully, something

quite different from your UK home or you won´t feel as though you’re on holiday - how to go about it is a different matter. Even if you know the whereabouts of all the furniture and DIY stores, you still have to deal with the language barrier, multiple deliveries from different sources, fitting and unpacking … suddenly, it’s starting to look more like a chore than a pleasure! And have you remembered everything you are likely to need, down to the last tea-towel and plate? Far easier is to use an interior design company, and this need not be as expensive as you think. Firstly, the staff will speak your language, so you can explain what you will use the property for, and what ideas and preferences you have. In addition, they will have prepared inventory lists, from curtains

to beds, TVs to cutlery, and Yes, that plate! So you won’t get a furniture package exactly the same as someone else’s, but a bespoke furnishing scheme suited to your needs. Secondly, because they are based here, they can co-ordinate all the deliveries in one go from their own storage facilities, and organise all the unpacking. Thirdly, they can supervise the fitting, so that when you arrive, everything is in place and working, from curtains to lights, mirrors and even the TV system. Imagine returning to the Island and walking back into your new holiday home, furnished and equipped, according to your instructions, and ready to enjoy! Deco Nuevo offers this service free of charge, included in the price of the furniture, so call the company on 922 789 729 to get a free, no-obligation quote.

Cats Welfare news

Boost emergency cat-taxis if you can IN an emergency, we occasionally need help picking up a cat or kitten - often after a traffic accident - and transferring them to a vet or a foster home.

These situations happen out of the blue and we have a “Cat Taxi” whatsapp group, in which we put a message out - and anyone in the group replies if he/she is able to help. If you can’t help because you’re working, on holiday, etc, simply ignore the message. But we really need more people to join the group to ensure that someone is available to assist when the message goes out. Would you like to join? All you need is a car and use whatsapp. If you would like to join the group, ring or whatsapp Theresa on 680 475 500 (9am-6pm, 7 days a week). Kittens all around At this time of year (and throughout the summer), we are inundated with kittens - and we do our best to home as many as possible. We are able to place to white, Siamese, longhaired etc, fairly easily, but homing black kittens and black adult cats can be incredibly difficult. Through no fault of their own, black cats and kittens are overlooked time and again because most people tend to choose “prettier”, coloured cats. Is it, we wonder, because of superstition? It

all depends on how we think, and even where we live! Superstitions in different cultures and countries vary about black cats being “witches cats”, but they may still influence some people, particularly here in Spain. However, in Britain, Scotland and Japan, a black cat crossing your path, or even if you dream of a black cat, is said to bring you good luck. And, in Scotland, finding black kittens sitting in your porch is a sign of riches, and happiness to come! One thing is certain: those who have looked “beyond the coat”, and have adopted a black cat, consider themselves extremely lucky! But maybe the colour alone is off-putting. A black cat or kitten may blend into the shadows more in a foster home, making it harder to make that initial connection with them, or because black cats don’t always show up as well in online photographs. Normally, we also have a wide range of colours to which people are more drawn, while the black cats can seem to fade into the background, and are just passed by. But look beyond the coat because black cats have all the charm and charisma of their more colourful cousins. Their sleek, glossy coats complement their bright, shining eyes. They are stunning, regal-looking animals - each one an individual. Black cats are just as wonderful as any other,

with all the same needs - love and care, in a home of their own. And if you enjoy the company of cats, whatever their colour, please consider adopting a black one. All black kittens adopted through Cats Welfare have their first year’s injections, microchip and neutering paid by us at one of the vet practices we use. So if you are looking for a cat or kitten, please consider one of our beautiful black ones. You will not be disappointed. All cats and kittens awaiting homes can be seen on our website www.cats-welfaretenerife.com/pets. And if you don’t see what you’re looking for on our website, ring or whatsapp Theresa because we have new arrivals daily, and you can be added to our waiting list. Foster carers needed With the huge influx of kittens and the steady stream of adult cats requiring a temporary home while we find something more permanent, we are always looking for people willing to foster on a temporary basis. We provide everything required: food, litter, bedding, bowls, etc, and pay for all veterinary care. It doesn’t matter if you are here for just a few weeks or months because it’s a great way to enjoy a pet without long-term commitment. If you would like a noobligation chat, we are happy to answer any questions you have - or whatsapp Theresa on the number above.

Gaffers tape top spot! THE early-season form in Las Americas is looking good at Gaffers, especially when you recall that they lost two talented players in the close season. Even boss-man Neil has weighed in with a maximum, while those two players are languishing in fourth spot! And Gaffers’ 7-1 thrashing of Exiles last Friday included three maximums for Mark, helping to put them four points clear at the summit. Nathan replied with a 180 for the Exiles gang. Reigning champions Phoenix Bar had Mitch notching his first maximum of the campaign during a tough match at home against a newlook PSB team. But they eventually won 6-2. Pas O Nadas A made the short trip to Scruffy Macs’ dream-team venue and came away with a 4-4 draw. Becks and Steve Sub hit maximums, while John

replied for the Scruffy ones. Boothen, now playing at Suters Bar, in Parque de la Reina, put in a solid display to beat Spear Chuckers, while The Pub dropped just one point at home against Sandys Reborn. Our League rules state that the top three in Division 2 will certainly be promoted, so Division 1 will be looking forward to playing Picassos next season. They sit top of the pile after a superb performance gave them all eight points against Marilyns A. We hope to enjoy more thumping results like this in their chase for promotion! That result, and a 4-4 draw with Waterfall B, meant that Sundowners slipped back to second spot, while third-placed Tavern also shared the points at Rood. Ya Ya! Another side winning big in this section were Naughty Nau-

tas. With Kay checking out on 94, they put seven past the Playgirls. And Legends matched that margin with a fine victory at Pas O Nadas B. Emerald Lounge nicked the trebles leg to win at Clouseaus by the odd point, and last-

rubber wins saw Nauta Nomads and Marilyns B tie with Bar Leones and Palms Pool Bar respectively. *Captains, please note: we have a meeting on Sunday (5th June) at Marilyns Bar in Silencio. Start time is 1pm sharp!

Canarian Under-18 Rugby Cup Final - 2nd leg

Ñandú celebrate clean sweep ÑANDÚ, determined to end their season on a high following their somewhat stuttering victory in the first leg, succeeded brilliantly, but only after an early scare.

The boys felt tentative, naturally, because the Copa Canarias was up for grabs - and a win would give them a clean sweep of honours. Las Palmas, seemingly getting tougher by the match, were off to a great start. They dominated play and put the Ñandú defence under pressure.

Ñandú 29 Las Palmas 7 (agg score: 48-14)

And though Edu broke through to give the home side a 5-0 lead, their nerves were evident, demonstrated by the high number of knock-ons, resulting in numerous first-half scrums. However, the second

half saw Ñandú step up the tempo and the tries rained in, first from Ryan, then Gabri, followed by captain Jacob, converted by Gabri, to bring the score up to a respectable 22-0. A further try from Gabri, which he also

converted, added another seven points with minutes to go. But Las Palmas refused to give up the fight and a lastminute, converted try put them on the board, leaving a final score of 29-7. It was a thoroughly exhausting, physi-

cal encounter for both teams, but it sets them up for next season’s battles. With referee Mike Furby conducting the trophy presentation, for winners and runnersup, the Champagne flowed freely, along with the camaraderie which encompasses the sport of rugby. Ñandú, their league season now over, can look forward to letting their hair down with some energetic competition in the 23rd annual Torneo de Rugby Sevens in La Laguna tomorrow (Saturday). Ñandú RC Under 18s are proud to finish the 2015-2016 season with

this superb record: Undefeated League champions; League Cup winners; Copa Canarias winners; National Tournament Bronze Cup winners, and Adeje Multi-Cultural Team of the Year. For further information on how to get involved in the club, please call Paul on 664 361 058. Ñandú are holding an end-of season celebration on Thursday (9th June) at Showtime, Karting Las Americas. And if anyone is willing to donate raffle prizes to help the boys raise funds in preparation for next season, please contact Paul.

Spain need early focus

THERE’S just a week to go before the opening game of the 2016 European Championship, and the excitement is mounting. This week, we have a look at Groups C and D.

By Adi Benson

In Group C, you have the ultimate commentator’s “battle” cliché as Germany and Poland will be facing off. The German world champions are group favourites and also one of the tournament favourites. They will probably advance with Poland, leaving the scraps for Ukraine and Northern Ireland. In Group D we have Spain, who are, of course, defending Euro champions. They are grouped with three Eastern European sides, with Croatia probably being the biggest threat. However, Turkey and Czech Republic are no pushovers. Let’s have a look at the teams, starting with Group C. (Group D on page 54.)

Germany

Ukraine

Germany are World Champions and three-time winners of this tournament. That said, they haven’t won the Euros since 1996. and in 2000 and 2004 they didn’t get beyond the group stages. They have an ageing squad, and struggled a little in the qualifying.

Ukraine finished third in their group behind Spain and Slovakia but, with 19 points, they had done enough to reach the play-offs. A 2-0 win against Slovenia over two legs was enough to see them through to the tournament.

The Republic of Ireland took four points off them and they lost to Poland, who will be bang-up for another crack at their old enemy. Lopsided, slow full-backs … they could be there for the taking in the knock-out stages.

They have a new manager, who will have them welldrilled at the back. They also have two world-class wingers but no real target man to find. A win over Northern Ireland could be it for them.

Manager: Joachim Low World ranking: 5th Odds to win: 4-1 Best bet: Mario Gomez, top Germany scorer 5-1

Manager: Mykhailo Fomenko World ranking: 22nd Odds to win: 100-1 Best bet: Top finish, third in Group C 7-4

Poland

Northern Ireland

With Robert Lewandowski up front, Poland were top scorers in qualifying with 33 goals, 13 coming from their main man. That said, they did play Gibraltar twice. They are genuine tournament dark horses.

It was a massive surprise to see Northern Ireland qualify for the tournament, but they notched an impressive 21 points and topped the group. This will be their first Euros appearance, and they have Kyle Lafferty to thank because he hit seven goals during the group stages.

The Germans hold no fear and they will be confident of beating the other two. The draw is favourable, and, if they can get the defence sorted, they will go deep into the tournament.

However this is different gravy. They have a really tough group and will do well to get any points. Goalscoring is a real problem, so they will be reliant on setpieces. NI are here for the beer!

Manager: Adam Nawalka World ranking: 27th Odds to win: 66-1 Best bet: Lewandowski to score, and to beat Northern Ireland 11-4

Manager: Michael O’Neill World ranking: 26th Odds to win: 500-1 Best bet: Jonny Evans, top NI goal-scorer 20-1

2016 European Championship: Group D

Spain

Turkey

Spain are defending champions, but they are not the force they once were. That didn’t stop them having a strong qualifying campaign, though, as they picked up nine wins - defeat by Slovakia being their first loss in international competition since 2006.

Turkey finished strongly in the group stages and just squeezed through, avoiding a play-off.

And they looked good in their friendly match with England recently. Semi-finalists in 2008, they are a “confidence” side. If they make a good start and settle into the tournament, they will be a tough egg to crack. The first XI are decent, but the bench is a serious weakness.

They probably have the strongest squad, but there are question-marks everywhere. And this could be the group of death if they make another slow start, as they did in Brazil. Nice route to the final if they win the group, though.

Manager: Vicente Del Bosque World ranking: 6th Odds to win: 11-2 Best bet: Cesc Fabregas, top Spain goal-scorer 12-1

Manager: Fatih Teram World Ranking: 13th Odds to win: 66-1 Best bet: Burak Yilmaz top Turkey goal-scorer 3-1

Czech republic

Croatia

Back in 2012, the Czech Repub lic needed a playoff match to qualify and then went all the way to the quarter-finals.

The Croatians have a dream midfield, with Ivan Rakitic, Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic, and could be a force to be reckoned with. They lost just once in qualification but still finished second in the group behind Italy.

But they had no such problems this time, winning their group to qualify for their sixth Euros in a row. They have a top-drawer coach, who will eke out everything from his old side.

They have had a couple of decent showings in this tournament, with runs to the last eight in 1996 and 2008. Croatia are an improving side and, should they win this group, they will be a good long-shot to go all the way.

And now, the end is near… CD Tenerife 1 Ponferradina 1

a tame draw against a Ponferradina side who By Roscoe could still be relTENERIFE fin- egated on the ished their home last day of the campaign with season.

Choco Lozano’s goal, midway through the second half, put the hosts ahead, only for Antonio Raillo to get a priceless equaliser 15 minutes from time. It’s now just one win

from seven as Tenerife’s season fizzles out, and this weekend it ends with a trip to rock-bottom Athletic Bilbao B. Alaves, who’ll play in La Liga next season, will be joined by Le-

ganes if they can win at Mirandes. Nastic, who have finished the season like a train, will benefit from any slipup by Leganes. Five teams still have play-off hopes, and there are just

three spots left. At the bottom, Mallorca will be relegated if they lose at Real Valladolid. They could even go bust if they go down. No pressure on the players then!
