Animals’ circus sparks petition Continued from Front Cirkus Kaos has pitched its tent in Los Cristianos and is offering public shows over the next few weeks. Tickets are on sale at just 10 euros, and plenty of tickets appear to have been sold. However, the centuries-old tradition of watching performing animals could soon be a thing of the past. And here, in the South of Tenerife, a petition to drive the circus out of town is growing by the hour. The petition has been launched on the popular change.org website, and, at the time of writing, was set to crash through the 3,000 barrier. Created by Sarka Ondysova, the petition says: “In the 21st century, we cannot allow animal circuses to remain an attraction. There are videos, photos and testimonials from various people, showing that the Cirkus Kaos has animals in poor condition. “The elephant lives in a cage that cannot let the animal rotate its movement; also, the legs are tied to each other. “The tiger does not stop moving from side to side of its cage. It has no external stimuli - a typical imbalance of felines in captivity, which is known as zoocosis. “Municipalities are maintained by our taxes. We ask Adeje Council to abolish animal circuses forever.” Those who have signed the petition have spoken of their fury. Sheila
Mounteney wrote: “Animals should never be exploited and used for entertainment, in circuses or any other show. It’s cruelty in it’s highest form.” Maureen Blair nailed it by saying: “This is appalling conditions for an animal, especially in this heat.” Yurena Perez noted: “It is intolerable that wild animals are in such poor, poor condition. Crated and used to entertain selfish, ignorant people, who are not there to see the suffering these animals have after the show finishes.” There are many many similar posts. Canarian Weekly contacted Mayor Fraga for a response and we print here, in full, the translation of his statement, as it was supplied to us. It says: “To everyone who has shown, in a manner of solidarity and generosity and incredible sensitivity to the suffering and abuse of animals in reaction to the presence of the Circus Kaos in our borough, I would like them to know:
1. That I SHARE completely this sensitivity and this ongoing fight in defence of animals and all living beings. 2. That a mayor cannot nor should he act arbitrarily simply where he wants to or now, but must act within the legitimate, established norm, and in working for social advancements, work to change and improve those norms. 3. Neither can we have a clean conscience, simply by banning a circus when there are so many examples of animal cruelty in our particular world. Bullfights, dog fights, cock-fighting, animals that are captured and mistreated, etc. I also think of those
who make their living with the circus, and those who like these kinds of shows, with animals act - which I personally don’t like - and which are a small part of the show, and regarding which we have insisted upon the strictest possible regulations that exist within our legal system. 4. I WOULD LIKE TO ALSO LET YOU KNOW THAT I HAVE STRESSED TO THE ORGANISER THAT THEY SHOULD SEEK, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, AN ALTERNATIVE TO USING ANIMALS IN THE SHOW, ALLOWING FOR A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME,
TO ADAPT AND REDESIGN THE SHOW FOR THE ANIMALS AND WORKERS. I HOPE IT WILL BE, AND I HAVE URGED THE ORGANISER TO MAKE THIS ONE OF THE LAST EVENTS WITH ANIMALS. 5. I will always support and be with those who are promoting sensitivity and compromise regarding progress such as in the area of conciliation for legitimate and alternative sensitivities, and within that I include the protection and help for the circus and the people who, with dedication and sacrifice, have brought us so many memorable moments. Finally, I must say how PROUD and PLEASED I am to belong to a society, a borough, which is to the fore in recognising sensitivity - in solidarity with people, in particular with children, who suffer the maximum cruelty from wars an unjust situations which shock us on a daily basis as well as in their dedication to the fight against animal abuse, and I will always support that. Thank you one and all.” The topic of animal and mammal shows has been in the news recently. There is the ongoing controversy surrounding orca and dolphin performances, while the long-term future of zoos has also been debated. And only a few days ago, it was revealed that Scotland is to ban wild
animals in travelling circus. The SNP Government revealed it intends to end the practice in a move that has been welcomed by animal rights campaigners. There is now pressure on the ban to cover the whole of the UK. A spokesperson told The Scotsman newspaper: “The Scottish Government intends to ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses. We are currently investigating the best mechanism for introducing legislation on ethical grounds, and will make further announcements in due course.” A spokeswoman for animal rights group Peta welcomed the ban, saying: “Peta salutes the government for listening to them and announcing its intention to ban this archaic form of entertainment on ethical grounds. Prime Minister David Cameron should take a leaf out of Holyrood’s book - while he dithers, animals continue to suffer and England falls further and further behind.” And Chris Draper of the Born Free Foundation, said he was “delighted” to hear of the ban, but urged ministers to move quickly. “We would hate to see Scotland replicate the mistakes and delays that have occurred south of the border, and urge the Scottish Government to act swiftly to end the archaic practice once and for all,” he added.

Election No.2 just as hard to resolve
SPAIN’S second General Election in six months is now just a few days away, and leaders of the main four parties have had their one and only head-to-head TV clash.
The gloves were off as economic policies and corruption scandals were the main shouting points. And the eight years of current Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s administration came under the microscope during Monday’s debate. It was a moment of history as Podemos and Ciudadanos shared a platform with the Popular Party (PP) and the Socialists (PSOE). Since the days of democracy, the PP and PSOE have dominated politics. But the times are a-changing. During the two-hour debate, PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez, Pablo Iglesias, of Podemos, and Ciudadanos boss Albert
Rivera criticised Rajoy’s austerity policies. In the only debate before the nation votes, on Sunday, 26th June, they tried their best to highlight the country’s economic woes. Rajoy, who insisted they were talking nonsense, said the country was the fastest-growing in the EU. The three party leaders also brought up the numerous corruption cases, which have rocked Rajoy’s party. Rajoy, clearly on the back foot, countered: “To govern is difficult, to preach is easy.” There was plenty of bickering as they blamed each other for the failure to form a working government after the Christmas election. That poll gave the PP a narrow lead, and Rajoy didn’t get any support from the other parties as he tried to form a coalition. But the others couldn’t agree among themselves, either; thus the new election. And the public, according to the opinion polls, are not happy with the re-run.
For his part, Sanchez highlighted the Podemos decision to side with the PP in Congress by voting against a Socialist-Ciudadanos government. Iglesias tried his best not to annoy Sánchez - he may need him in a few weeks - instead, calling on the Socialist boss to consider a Podemos coalition with the Communist Party. “There are only two real options: the PP or a properly-progressive government,” he said. There is a real concern that the new poll will be an action-replay of the original one, but all the leaders vowed to try to avoid a repeat. “There will be no further elections,” said Iglesias, while Rivera said he would support “a government of change”. Rajoy insisted that, as his PP party is likely to win the most votes, he should be allowed to form a government, calling on Ciudadanos and the PSOE to unite with him for the good of the country. Iglesias repeated his vow for a left-leaning government, with a Socialists
pact that would install him as Prime Minister. That said, he conceded that Sanchez was unlikely to play second-fiddle in any administration. Opinion polls indicate that the elections will be as tight as December’s. A survey by Metroscopia, published in EL PAÍS, shows the PP will likely win 28.9% of the vote, with the Socialists taking 20.8% and Ciudadanos
15.9%. Unidos Podemos is forecast to win 25.4%. In the Canary Islands, according to the opinion polls, Podemos will increase from three to five seats from the two Canary provinces in the election. This would tie the PP, while the PSOE would have three seats. This was the forecast made by the Sociological Research Centre (CIS) in Tuesday’s survey,
gleaned from interviews throughout Spain between 4th-22nd May. In last December’s elections in Las Palmas, there were three seats for the PP, two for the PSOENC, two for Podemos and one for Ciudadanos. Santa Cruz de Tenerife saw two for the PP, two for PSOE-NC, one for Podemos, one for Canary Coalition and one for Ciudadanos.
Inflation drops in the Canaries THE Consumer Price Index (CPI), or inflation as we say in the UK, fell 0.4% in the Canaries in May from the previous month. That ranks us as one of the communities in which prices rose less, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). In the country as a whole, the CPI rose 0.5% in May from the previous month and rose a 10th of a percent, year on year. The increase of electricity and petrol prices
saw the annual CPI rise slightly in May after April recorded its most negative rate since February 2015 (-1.1%). And the May figure means the annual CPI has now strung together five months of negative rates. In monthly terms, the CPI rose 0.5% in May from the previous month, 10% less than initially advanced by the INE late last month. Core inflation, which excludes prices of energy products and un-
processed food, stood at 0.7% in May, while the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) annual inflation stood at -1.1%, which was 10% more than in April. The difference between core inflation and overall CPI stands at almost two points, according to the INE. Statistics attributed the rise in the annual rate of CPI in May to the behaviour of housing sales, which increased by 60%, compared with April.

ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga has announced the launch of a Canarian Child and Adolescent Protection Round Table, to focus on helping those who work on a daily basis with children and families in need of assistance and/or at risk.
Mayor Fraga was accompanied by Mauricio Aurelio Roque González, the Regional Government’s Director General of the Children and Family Protection Department, and Ricardo Redondas Marrero, Department of Public Health Director General. Other heads of relevant departments and political representatives were also in attendance, including family law experts and education chiefs, together with Social Welfare Councillors and representatives. The Round Table’s working group will evolve a protocol which “would be a first
Housing prices up 5.9% THE price of housing rose 5.9% in the Canary Islands in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same 2015 period, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). In relation to the previous quarter, that cost increased by 2.1% in the Islands in the Housing Price Index, published by the INE. The rise was significantly higher regarding the Islands’ new homes, which recorded an 8.1% increase from a year ago, and 4.4% compared with the last quarter of 2015. Used-home sales experienced increases of 5.6% and 1.9% respectively. Throughout Spain, housing prices in the first quarter rose 6.3% over the same 2015 period, indicating eight consecutive upward quarters, and scoring the biggest increase since the third quarter of 2009.

step in the work in the protection of young people - something we are very concerned about, and we are also working to create an on line platform”, said the Mayor. He added that Adeje would focus on meeting the needs of children at risk, saying: “We need to be able to anticipate and have responses to the changes in the laws protecting minors. “Our objective is to take decisions that are relevant and matter, so we have identified the need for a co-ordinated approach among the different agencies working in the field. “Today, we have created a working group to elaborate an action plan that is consensual and co-ordinated … and this isn’t simply an Adeje initiative, but regional. So any action plan will have the whole of the Canarian community as the focus.” Marrero welcomed the initiative, saying: “It is
no surprise that we are launching this in Adeje, given the borough’s excellent social programmes.” “My department is very concerned about inequalities in health and unnecessary injustices. We have seen that current health policies are not creating equality opportunities in all sectors.
Go-it-alone
Canarians THE Spanish Government has yet to respond to the Canarian Government’s request for compensation, after becoming one of the few regions to meet the 2015 deficit target.
Given this lack of response, the Canary Islands Government has decided to act on its own and raise its debt ceiling to allocate more resources from its own Tax Collection to public services, and address any outstanding commitment. The Islands’ Government has recalculated the spending rule, based on the positive outcome of the last year, and the fine performance of rev-
enues in the first quarter of the current year. This will allow officials to invest 123m euros in public services. The announcement was made by Canarian President Fernando Clavijo, whose tone was definitely defiant. “The Government of Spain should be aware of this, as we can work this out,” he said. “We will not hang around.” Finance Minister Rosa Davila said the planned spending “will not bring any deficit in our target, or spending budgets set by the central government”. The availability of these funds will reach the Canary Islands Parliament next month. The exact destination of the 123m euros is still to be determined, and each department will move its priorities to the Finance Ministry.
“This is noticeable among young people and children, in social programmes, in education, and in the health of our children. “If, indeed, we wish to create a society that is just and sustainable, we cannot simply look
the other way and must meet these inequalities head-on.” He added: “One of the issues that concerns us is addiction. Recent reports indicate that while we might be better-than-average in the Canaries in terms of
addictions, we are still looking at issues that need attention. “And not just substance abuse. We are also talking about internet addictions, phone dependencies … things that require institutional co-ordination.”

‘An act of terror and hate’ by murder-spree gunman OMAR Mateen, an American-born man who had pledged allegiance to terrorist group ISIS, gunned down 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, early last Sunday.
It was the deadliest mass shooting ever in the US, and the nation’s worst terror attack since 9/11. Yet the 29-year-old gunman - born to Afghan parents in New York who was eventually shot dead by police, had been interviewed in 2013 and 2014 by the FBI, which deemed him harmless. Mateen called 911 - the emergency services - during his horrific attack on the popular Pulse nightclub, to pledge allegiance to ISIS, and he also mentioned the Boston Marathon bombers, according to a US official. In the previous two weeks, Mateen legally purchased a Glock pistol and a long gun, reporters were told. Mateen, whose former wife thought he was mentally ill, carried an assault rifle and pistol into the packed Pulse club at about 2am and started shooting, killing 49 people and wounding at least 53. After a three-hour
GIBRALTAR, the 2.6-square-mile outpost at the tip of Spain, is the only British overseas territory to be given a say in the referendum on European Union membership. Its 23,000 votes will, technically, be counted as part of the South West England region. And, according to a poll by the Gibraltar Chronicle, 88% of residents will vote to stay. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo is also pleading for voters in Britain to consider the effect of Brexit on the Rock. “They should all be thinking about Gibraltar and all the other constituent parts of the decision,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “Do we simply vote in our self-inter-
stand-off, during which those trapped inside called out desperately and messaged friends and relatives, the police, armed with stungrenades, crashed into the building with an armoured vehicle and killed Mateen. Orlando Police Chief John Mina said: “It appears he was organised and well-prepared, and authorities haven’t found any accomplices.” Pulse describes itself as “the hottest gay bar” in the heart of Orlando, and people inside the cavernous night-club described a scene of panic, made more confusing by the loud music and darkness. “At first, it sounded like it was part of the show because there was an event going on and we were all having a good time,” said club regular Andy Moss. “But once people started screaming and shots just keep est?” Picardo, as leader of the Socialist Labour Party, argues that the EU has prevented the Spanish from endangering the Rock, which has been British since 1704. Spain closed its border with the territory, placing a strangle-hold on its economy for a dozen years under General Franco, It reopened it fully, under fierce international pressure, a year before joining the EU. Since then, the European Commission has intervened repeatedly to prevent delays over the border when tensions have risen. Although Picardo believes Gibraltar will always remain British - and that there is no suggestion of a mili-
ringing out, you know that it’s not a show any more.” Christopher Hansen said he was getting a drink at the bar at about 2am when he “just saw bodies going down”. He heard gunshots, “one after another after another”, going on for so long that the shooting “could have lasted a whole song”. Survivors provided CNN with dramatic accounts of how they avoided death, one person hiding in the bathroom and covering herself with bodies for protection. Some entertainers hid in a dressing room when the shooting started and escaped the building by crawling out when police removed the air-conditioning unit. A bartender said she hid under the glass bar. “Police came in and said, ‘If you are alive, raise your hand’.” They then rescued her and others.
After the initial shooting, police surrounded the club while Mateen was inside. Thirty-nine people and Mateen were pronounced dead at the scene, with two bodies found in the parking lot. There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack on jihadi forums, but ISIS sympathisers on pro-Islamic State forums have reacted by praising the attack. President Obama said in an address to the nation from the White House: “We know enough to say this was an act of terror and act of hate. “This is an especially heart-breaking day for our friends, who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.” A police bomb disposal unit, fearing explosives at Mateen’s Fort Pierce apartment, some 120 miles from Orlando, evacuated about 200 people from his com-
Gibraltar chief in plea to Brits to forget Brexit tary threat to the Rock - he argues that Brexit could encourage Spain to cause problems at the border, or consider closing it and push for joint sovereignty over the territory. Jose Manuel GarciaMargallo, Spain’s acting Foreign Minister, said he would start talks on Gibraltar “the very next day” after a Brexit. Picardo said remaining in the EU would give Gibraltar “the tools to defend our-
selves against a predatory Spain”. He added: “When the time comes, we need to ensure the United Kingdom has at its disposal as strong an arsenal of measures as possible to defend Gibraltar.” He criticised the Leave campaign for “wrapping itself in the Union flag”, arguing that it was more “patriotic” to remain a member. “If you are a patriot, you want Britain and, with it, Gibral-
plex while searching for evidence. Mateen’s parents said he’d expressed outrage after seeing two men kiss in Miami, but they didn’t consider him particularly religious, and were oblivious of any ISIS connection. He was married in 2009 to a woman originally from Uzbekistan, according to the marriage licence, but he ended the marriage two years later. Sitora Yusufiy, interviewed by CNN in Boulder, Colorado, said she and Mateen were together about four months, though it took a long time to complete the divorce because they lived in different parts of the country after separating. He was a normal husband at the beginning of their marriage, she recalled, but he started abusing her after a few months. She said Mateen was bipolar, although he was not formally diagnosed. She also said he had a history with steroids. He was religious, but she didn’t think that played any part in his attack. Since 2007, Mateen had worked as a security officer at G4S Secure Solutions, one of the world’s largest private security companies. A message posted in Arabic on a dark website, associated with ISIS news agency Amaq, said: tar to be stronger and safer,” he stressed. He said Brexit would also harm the economy, which relies on trading financial services with the EU. Damon Bossino, a Gibraltarian whose father used to run the art deco Rock Hotel, and his Spanish wife, Rosa, are also concerned about a Brexit. Rosa’s elderly parents live less than a mile away in Spain, and she is worried about more stringent border checks, or a complete closure. “I have seen videos of what happened under Franco,” she said. “Is this going to happen to my family? It is something that doesn’t depend only on us. It depends on the UK.
“The armed attack that targeted a gay night-club in the city of Orlando, and bore more than 100 killed and wounded, was carried out by an Islamic state fighter.” But CNN’s Salma Abdelaziz, who translated the message and closely monitors ISIS messaging, cautioned about taking the message at face value. She said the language was inconsistent with previous ISIS announcements, and that the Arabic word for gay was used rather than an epithet normally used by ISIS. Also, there was no claim that the attack was directed, but simply an after-the-fact statement that the gunman was an ISIS fighter. The City of Orlando posted names of the deceased on a website after next-of-kin had been notified. National media attention had already been focused on Orlando over the weekend because of Friday night’s fatal shooting of Christina Grimmie after a show. The promising singer had appeared on America’s version of The Voice. Her killer then shot himself. The Pulse shooting happened just a few miles from the Plaza Live theatre, where she had been killed. It is very worrying.” The couple drive their autistic, nine-year-old son John across the border regularly for specialist treatment. “If I had to take John on a plane for treatment in Britain, it would be very stressful for him,” she said. Some, such as businessman John Bromfield, are convinced any Spanish threat can be seen off regardless. “I can understand the apprehension,” said Mr Bromfield, who will be voting to leave. “They like the protection of the EU and they wonder if Britain will step in and replace that. My view is that for the last 300 years, that is exactly what Britain has done.”

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
Time to grow up HERE we go again. Another major football tournament marred by violence. It’s 2016, not 1976. In fact, scratch that because, in the Seventies, at the height of the hooliganism problem, England didn’t play much tournament football. Silver linings and all that. After the recent terrorist atrocities in France, I honestly thought the continent would pull together. Most of the nations and their fans have embraced the spirit of the European Championship. But, as usual, a braindead minority lets us down. As one Spanish newspaper asked this week: “Why is it always England?” Of course, the Russian Ultras are largely to blame, but you reap what you sow. They are simply trying to be topdogs in the violence league table and see England as the prize catch. Regardless of what the Russians have done, it is time for the English to have a long, hard look at themselves. We have all seen the images. A tanked-up, topless, England fan, arms outstretched, singing: “No surrender to the IRA.” One “fan” said: “All we are doing is having a
drink, a sing-song and a bit of banter. What’s wrong with that?” They don’t get it, do they? These “fans” actually think it’s okay to take over a town square, or city centre, every two years and, drunkenly, swear, shout, verbally abuse and cause aggro. All in the name of banter. They don’t think for one second, or care a jot, for those who live there, or are trying to enjoy the tournament in a civilised way. The England “fans” banter is terrifying for many, who are repulsed by the attitude, yet not every country has a drinking culture. Europe has had enough of our “banter” and, truth be told, so have most English football followers. I will wager that those so-called fans, who believe it is their birthright to act like idiots in these tournaments, will not do so in Qatar in 2022. Different set of rules over there!

PHYSICIST Stephen Hawking arrived back in Tenerife this week, sailing in from La Palma for the start of his third visit to the Island - and his role as guest of honour at the Starmus Festival, which starts in a week.
In fact, the arrival of the British scientist “is the first day of the event”, according to Festival Director Garik Israelian. “We’ve started the countdown,” he insisted on the Santa Cruz pier, where a representation of the Island’s authorities welcomed Prof Hawking. The renowned scientist was aboard the Britannia cruise ship, coming from La Palma, where he has become
the first name of the ‘Walk of Stars of Science‘ in the Island’s Santa Cruz capital. This weekend, winners of the Stephen Hawking Medals on Science Communication will be announced - and the proper countdown to Starmus then begins. Israelian said: “The whole event has been designed with a great tribute to the scientist because, in every conversation, in every
speech and every action, there will be some specific touch to Hawking.” Israelian also teased a treat, saying: “On 27th June, there will be a big surprise at Starmus.” The Starmus founder took the first moments of the British scientist’s arrival here to thank him for his presence, since, he understood: “He has undergone a long, complicated journey from England to get here.”

Internet is speedier, but not in Canaries INTERNET networks with speeds of 10 Mbps (megabytes per second) is now reaching 88.1% of Spanish territories.
But it has not yet arrived in the Canaries, Galicia, Cantabria, Asturias, Castilla y Leon, the Balearics or Andalucia. According to the report of broadband coverage in Spain in the first quarter of 2016, prepared by the Ministry of Industry, none of these autonomous regions reached the national average (88.1% of the territory, compared with 85% in the first quarter of 2015), registering the lowest levels of coverage in Galicia (69.3%), Canaries (76.7%) and Cantabria (82.7%). The Community of Madrid (98.1%), La Rioja (95.8%) and Melilla (95.8%) were the three most populous regions with higher-capacity access services to 10
Mbps. The data coverage is the result of grouping all fixed-data transmission technologies available in the market, which include the conventional lines of copper and fibre-optic networks. Some 96.5% of Spaniards have guaranteed access to over 2 Mbps speeds. Galicia is the community with the least coverage (85.6% of the population) and La Rioja the largest (99.5%) . Some 71.2% of Spaniards have secured a network of greater-than, or equal-to, 30 Mbps - a percentage which has not yet arrived at that
speed to the Canaries, Castilla La-Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia, Castilla y Leon, Andalusia, the Balearics, Cantabria and Aragon. The remaining 10 communities - Catalonia, Navarra, Valencia, Murcia, Asturias, Ceuta, La Rioja, Basque Country, Madrid and Melilla - exceeded average speeds above 30 Mbps. At these higher speeds, the 65.7% market average of Spaniards had access to fixed networks with more than 100 Mbps speed. In this case, belowthe-average 10 communities (Extremadura, Castilla La-Mancha, Ca-
naries, Castilla y Leon, Andalusia, Galicia, the Balearics, Aragon, Cantabria and Murcia) and above the remaining nine (Catalonia, Navarra , Valencia, La Rioja, Asturias, Ceuta, Basque Country, Madrid and Melilla) were placed. For networks not fixed - as is the case of wireless 3G services and 4G type, among others, coverage levels were better in relation to fixed cable installations. In the case of 3G, virtually 100% of the population had access to these services, while for medium access, 4G fell to 90.5%. Below the national average, in the case of 4G, were nine communities: Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Castilla y Leon, Navarra, La Rioja, Aragon, Galicia, Andalusia and Asturias. The remaining 10 over were the Canaries, Basque Country, Catalonia, Cantabria, Valencia, Murcia, Balearics, Ceuta, Melilla and Madrid.

canny More youngsters Our Canarians should give blood SPANIARDS who made the most money by selling products online last year were, in fact, from the Canary Islands, who made an average 217 euros per year, which was 64 euros more than the national figures.
These facts were supplied via a study of eBay purchases, made by TNS, which monitors the habits of the Spanish when selling online between individuals. In fact, the Archipelago community gained more revenue by selling
BLOOD donations increased 3.7% in the Canary Islands in 2015 to a total of 65,103, which amounted to 31 donors per 1,000 inhabitants. But that was more than five points below the national average.
So says the “2015 Report on Blood Donation in Spain”, which was presented at a news conference this week by the Spanish Federation of Blood Donors (FED-
SANG), the Youth Committee Donors and Nexcare brand. They are involved with a campaign to increase awareness in young people of the need to increase donations. This data shows we are the second-lowest donors in Spain - and only Melilla is lower. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), to meet the needs in donations of blood, 45 per 1,000 inhabitants is required, while the average rate in developed countries is 38. In the whole country, after several years of steady decline, the number of altruistic blood
donations in Spain has changed during 2015, increasing by 0.78% over the previous year. In total, over 1,705,000 donations were given last year, equalling the overall rate of 36.64 donations per 1,000 inhabitants. Also, during 2015, 190,530 new people joined the blood-donation bank, representing 522 new donors every day. Álava, with 65 of every 1,000 people donating their blood freely and voluntarily, and Burgos, 54, lead the ranking of donors by province, with a difference of nearly 20 and 30 points, respectively, on
average national donations. They are also above the rate of 40 provinces of Asturias, Cantabria, Navarra, La Coruna, Valladolid, Albacete, Guipuzcoa, Cáceres, Pontevedra, Badajoz, Palencia and Granada. By region, leading the ranking of donations is Extremadura (45.36 per 1,000 inhabitants), Castilla y Leon (42.89) and Asturias (42.28). Blood donations enable 80 lives to be saved daily in Spain, thanks to the 6,200 blood transfusions performed each day- They also allow another 375 people to be restored to full health daily.
Sshh! Secret agents wanted to lift Spain
THE secret service in Spain needs 500 new agents to keep the nation safe from Islamic terrorists - and it’s no secret now!
Felix Sanz, head of the country’s National Intelligence Agency (CNI), has unveiled plans to boost the ser-
vice by hiring another 500 personnel by 2020 to combat the “growing jihadist threat”. The CNI chief told a security conference: “We’re winning the fight against jihadist fanaticism.” His claim has been backed up by a Spanish newspaper report, which cites recent successes on the ground against Isis in Iraq and Syria. But Sanz admit-
ted that defeating the terrorists could still take years. New CNI recruits are being sought in the fields of mathematics, telecommunications and computers with the expertise needed to combat a new breed of terrorism which, increasingly, uses new technology and social media. Francisco Martínez Vázquez, Spain’s Secre-
tary of State for Security, revealed during the seminar that around 170 Spanish residents had left to join the ranks of Isis. Of those, some 20-25 have returned to Spain, where they are either in custody or on a watchlist. The figure is significantly lower than that in other European countries, such as France or the UK.
second-hand goods last year, ahead of Murcia (186 euros), Extremadura (178), Aragon and Navarra (165), Valencia (162), Andalusia (156) and Madrid (152). As for the items being sold in the Canaries, most are mobile phones and products (25%), video games (17%) and books (14%) - all of them matching the best-selling Spanish items.
Crikey, what a poop-scoop THE theft of a “giant poop” - part of a local scoop-thepoop campaign in the city of Torrelodones - has been registered with the Guardia Civil.
Municipal sources in the Madrid region said the inflatable “dropping”, worth 2,400 euros, went missing after it was deflated and packed back into its case. The contractor says it will find a replacement for the imitation
dog mess, which stands three metres high. The display was part of a local awareness campaign to get residents to pick up their dogs’ mess. With pet ownership on the rise, other Spanish municipalities have come up with creative ways to stress the importance of picking up your dog’s mess on the pavements and streets. One town posts the droppings back to the animals’ owners, while others are trying to create a database, which will allow them to match the poop with the dog - through DNA testing!
Hit-and-run driver hurts woman badly POLICE are still hunting a hit-andrun driver, who put a woman in hospital with serious injuries following a collision in the municipality of Guia de Isora last week.
The 26-year-old woman was struck at the point of the TF-82 road between Guia de Isora and Adeje in the early hours of last Friday morning. Guardia Civil’s Traffic Department believes the victim was under
the influence of alcohol when she was hit by the vehicle. She was discovered by a person at 3.15am, lying on the road at Kilometre 38, which is a few hundred metres before the access to Guia de Isora town from the Adeje approach. The woman suffered a serious head injury and was, initially, transferred by medical personnel to the South Hospitén Green Clinic. Subsequently, the woman was taken to Candelaria hospital’s emergency department, where she was said to be stable and conscious.

Reign and rains of Repsol oil-drilling Queen Elizabeth on saga finally over her 90th birthday THE Patron’s Lunch street party in The Mall last Sunday, though threatened by heavy downpours at times, failed to dampen the revellers’ enjoyment, and that of Queen Elizabeth II on her “official” 90th birthday. There was a certain irony in the timing of the event because her genuine birthday, on 21st April, is deemed too near to Britain’s unreliable winter weather. And the royal family want her to have a spectacular occasion every year, with sunshine all the way. In fairness, the sun did shine through later in the afternoon, and the 10,000 loyal subjects, who each spent £150 for a seat in The Mall and a food hamper, had plenty to celebrate. The Queen marked the milestone birthday after becoming Britain’s longest-serving monarch last year, surpassing her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, paid a heartfelt tribute to his grandmother during the afternoon, telling her she was a person of whom her family and world leaders could rely on for guidance. William, who will eventually reign himself, also said he wanted to say a “personal thank-you” to the Queen on behalf of all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. “Granny, thank you for everything you have done for your family,” he told her, and the thousands congregated there. “We could not wish you a happier birthday.” The Queen made the crowds laugh when she responded by joking about future renditions of Happy Birthday. “I much appreciate the kindness of all your birthday wishes, and have been delighted and moved by the many cards and messages I have received,” she said. “How I will feel if people are still singing Happy Birthday to me in December remains to be seen.” William, who was joined by his wife Kate, brother Prince Harry and his
THERE is great news for those who opposed the oil-drilling in the Canary Islands.
grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, also remarked on the Queen’s “sharp wit and famous sense of humour”. He added: “The Queen at 90 is the one Head of State that world leaders can turn to for a firsthand perspective of the arc of history over the last six decades. “At 90, the Queen is the leader of our country, who we all look up to in good times and, in challenging moments to set an example, and to guide the way ahead.” The Patron’s Lunch, attended by 10,000 people, was actually held to celebrate the Monarch’s patronage of more than 600 charities and organisations, though she wasn’t there for the start. They had braved the heavy rain to let her know just how much she was appreciated, and their endurance was rewarded when they were joined by the Queen and other members of the Royal Family. The hamper lunch, which included pork pies, cup-cakes and a bottle of Pimms, was the idea of Peter Phillips, her oldest grandson. He came up with the scheme after realising
there had never been an event to bring together the many organisations she has supported over the years. He told Sky News: “It’s a tight time-line. We’ve all been scratching our heads over the past few months, wondering how we’re going to do it. But the team have been amazing, and everyone has stepped up to the mark.” There was some criticism of the £150 Patron’s Lunch tickets, but organisers insisted the price was fair because it was not a state-funded event. The party, which also included a street parade - one of many held around the country brought to an end three days of celebrations in honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday. A thanksgiving service was held at St Paul’s Cathedral last Friday, followed the next day by the annual Trooping the Colour pageant. Among the highlights was Princess Charlotte making her first appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony, carried by the Duchess of Cambridge, as the royals watched an RAF flypast.
The Supreme Court has ruled that it was correct in allowing the tests in 2014, even though the Canarian Government had challenged the decision legally. However, the Supreme Court’s ruling may just have settled the dispute over the oil exploration carried out by Repsol, 60km west of the Canary Islands. But it will not mean a row of beans because Repsol has confirmed
that its permits have expired. The Spanish oil company made just one of the three probes which had been authorised, recognising that traces of hydro-carbons found in these areas - in the seabed between the Canary Islands and the coast of Morocco - had neither the quality nor the quantity for it to be profitable to exploit the well. The Canarian Government and environmental groups argued that the order granting permissions, literally, said they had three years of existence, so it should expire in 2017.
The Court recognised that “there has been no formal resignation” of Repsol to use those permissions in the Canaries and that, in theory, it might seem that these remain valid until 11th August 2017, by application of its three years of existence. However, the Chamber of Administrative said the value of permits was linked directly to compliance with the timetable permits of previous research. This set a period of four years to complete the work, which expired on 21st March this year. Judge Eduardo Espin, of the Chamber of Administrative Litigation, argued: “So after March 21st, 2016, it is no longer possible to perform some activity within the framework of the aforementioned research permits ‘Canarias 1 to 9’, and, therefore, neither the exploratory wells pending, much as the authorisation for these were extended until August 11th, 2017.”

Great Barrier Reef banks on Aussie PM
MALCOLM Turnbull, the Australian Prime Minister, has pledged to set up a £520m fund to help protect the ailing Great Barrier Reef - if he is reelected!
Opinion polls have the
PM’s conservative coalition level with the centre-left Labour opposition, which announced a £260m, five-year plan for the reef last month. According to scientists, some 50% of the World Heritage Site’s northern coral is in danger of being destroyed by mass bleaching, which, they believe, is being caused mainly by
climate change. Turnbull, facing a tight reelection battle, said the cash would come from the Clean Energy Finance Corporation’s £5.2bn fund. The bleaching happens because, as the water warms up, coral is forced to expel living algae, which then causes it to calcify and turn white. Slightly-bleached
coral can recover if the temperature drops. But it can die, otherwise The money would be invested in clean-energy projects, and a reduction of the agricultural and waste-water run-off of pollutants, such as fertiliser, which is hampering the reef’s ability to withstand rising sea temperatures. “Much of this will come
in the form of financing solar energy, which of course will reduce emissions but also enable farmers to manage their land more efficiently,” said Turnbull. The Great Barrier Reef stretches 2,300km (1,430 miles) along Australia’s north-east coast. It is the world’s largest living ecosystem, raking in around £2.6bn from
tourists each year. Professor Terry Hughes, of the National Coral Bleaching Task-force, said of the site’s northern coral: “Our estimate at the moment is that close to 50% of the coral is already dead or dying.” The group conducted aerial surveys of the reef and published its report in April.
Dozy shepherd won’t lose sleep over sheep!
A HUGE flock of sheep, numbering around 1,300, took full advantage when their shepherd dozed off, escaping into the nearby city of Huesca in northeastern Spain.
Police were swiftly alerted by a local resident as they made their way through the city at around 4.30am. The shepherd was supposed to be guiding his sheep on to the pastures of the Pyrenees,
where they will spend the summer. But it was a warm night and he just couldn’t stay awake. So much so that the police managed to round up the sheep and deliver them back to the shepherd before he even realised they were missing! Local police uploaded a video of the runaway animals on to their official Facebook page, saying they were able to find the shepherd and return his flock by 7am.

The bear facts about survival
A BROWN bear, imported from Slovenia by the Spanish and released in the northern Pyrenees mountains, could be the key to ensuring the survival of the species there.
The male bear, named Goiat, is about 10 years old and weighs 205kg (450lbs). He was set free in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, the Catalonia region’s largest. He arrived in Spain by road from a Slovenia reserve, which has a thriving bear population, and has helped swell the number of bears around Europe.
Native Pyrenean brown bears were almost extinct in the Nineties, mainly because of callous hunters. The first attempt to re-introduce them was in 1996-97 when three bears - two females and a male named Pyros were brought from Slovenia. There are now believed to be 35 brown bears on both sides of the mountain range of Pyrenees, which straddles the Spanish-French border. The majority of them are the offspring of Pyros, who is now 26 and showing signs of ageing. Wildlife officials wanted to introduce a new male bear on to the Pyros domain for the sake of genetic diversity. Specialists say that ex-
cessive in-breeding reduces genetic variation and, over time, leaves an animal population more vulnerable to diseases and deformities. The programme to reintroduce brown bears in the region has been strongly opposed by cattle and sheep farmers, who claim they kill their livestock and are most unwelcome. Brown bears originated about 600,000 years ago in China and were first reported in Europe about 250,000 years ago. They are the same “ursus arctos” species as the grizzly bear, which is also declining rapidly in number. Historically, there were around 50,000 grizzly bears in North America but today, sadly, there are an estimated 1,800.
40-year sentence for US wife-killer actor AN American actor, convicted of shooting his wife dead, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after her family read out an emotional statement in the Los Angeles court.
Michael Jace, who appeared in the US TV series The Shield, admit-
ting shooting April Jace in 2014 and was convicted of her second-degree murder in May. The 53-year-old, best known for playing a policeman in the series, apologised to his wife’s family and said there was no justification for his actions. April was shot once in the back and twice in the legs by her husband, whose lawyer, arguing that his client acted in the heat of passion,
sought a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors had cited testimony from the couple’s 10-year-old son, who told jurors he heard his father say: “If you like running, then run to heaven,” before firing a second gunshot. Away from his TV career, Jace had small roles in films such as Planet of the Apes, Boogie Nights and Forrest Gump.

Murdered girl’s parents put up a £50,000 reward THE parents of murdered Melanie Hall have offered a £50,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the person or people responsible with a vital breakthrough possibly in sight.
Melanie, a 25-year-old university graduate, was last seen 20 years ago, at 1.10am on 9th June, 1996, sitting on a stool on the edge of the Cadillacs nightclub dance floor in Bath, during a night out with friends. A workman found her remains in a bag in vegetation next to the northbound slipway of Junction 14 on the M5 at Thornbury, Gloucestershire, on 5th October, 2009. The reward comes after detectives investigating the killing received “potentially-significant
information” following an appeal on last week’s BBC Crimewatch programme, on the 20th anniversary of her disappearance. Police said some callers named potential suspects. Melanie’s father, Steve Hall, said: “We believe we’re in touching distance of a significant breakthrough, and feel it’s the right time to offer a substantial reward to encourage someone to come for-
ward with information. “Someone may have been wavering over whether to provide information for a long time. This amount of money is life-changing, and I hope it will provide the incentive for them to do the right thing.” He added: “Melanie’s murder has had a terrible impact on our family. And I know my wife, Pat, is tortured by what happened to our daugh-
ter and will never get over it.” Avon and Somerset Police now have DNA evidence from an item found at the scene where Melanie’s remains were discovered. Mr Hall said: “I believe this inquiry will be solved by one of two things - either through the advancement of DNA, helping to identify who was responsible, or someone who knows a crucial piece of informa-
Britons race to be Irish THE Republic of Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs has been inundated with a significant rise in applications from British people for Irish passports.
The clamour for Irish citizenship is believed to have been sparked by the prospect of a UK Brexit, although officials aren’t actually claiming that. Irish Foreign Minister Charlie Flanagan said: “We’ve had an unprecedented level of applications. We have in excess of 200 new staff on a temporary basis in our passport office.” He added: “I don’t have any evidence that you can forge a link between an increase in passport applications and the current Referendum, but I do acknowledge the factual position that there is heightened interest in
Irish passport application and Irish citizenship.” Figures obtained by Sky News reveal a 25% increase in the number of applications from England, Scotland and Wales. In the first five months of 2016, there were 1,901 applications, compared with 1,518 in the first five months of 2015, which adds up to a 25% increase. And in April alone, the figure
zoomed up 42%, from 695 last year to 987 this year. But obtaining an Irish passport isn’t as simple as it might seem. Ireland will grant citizenship to applicants who have an Irish parent, grandparent or even greatgrandparent. However, grandchildren need to have been recorded in the country’s foreign births’ register for their children to be eli-
gible as well. People living in Northern Ireland are considered a special case, with the same right to claim Irish citizenship as those living south of the border. No one has to state a reason, but it seems clear that some have applied to ensure they remain citizens of the EU in the event of a British exit from the European Union. Martin O’Neill, a politics professor from York who already holds both British and Irish passports, has applied for his children to become dual citizens. He told Sky News: “I think we always thought that, eventually, it might be nice for the children to have dual citizenship as well. “But the fear of Brexit, and the fact that the Referendum was happening, really concentrated our minds to try to get that all sorted out sooner rather than later.”
tion having the moral fibre to contact the police.” Det Supt Andy Bevan said: “We’re continuing to work with forensic scientists to develop a DNA profile from an item found where Melanie’s remains were discovered.
“There’s no doubt this brings us an important step closer to finding her killer.” Crimestoppers is also offering a £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for Ms Hall’s murder.

Another blow for families of Hillsborough victims
Tories ‘shameful’ to block policing laws BRITAINS Tory Government has been accused of “shameful” behaviour by families of the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster victims after
blocking proposals for sweeping new laws on policing and inquests.
Margaret Aspinall, chairman of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, watched from the public gallery as Labour’s Andy Burn-
ham, from Liverpool, called for a “Hillsborough law” in a Commons debate. The Shadow Home Secretary demanded equal funding for legal representation for families and police and public bodies in inquests as MPs debated the Gov-
ernment’s Policing and Crime Bill. But Labour’s move to give bereaved families parity of funding for legal representation at inquests where the police are involved was defeated by 264 votes to 155. Another Labour proposal, calling on the
Government to begin a “Leveson 2” inquiry into the relationship between the press and the police was defeated by 268 votes to 155. A bitter Ms Aspinall said: “I came down for the votes today and I am disappointed. It feels like Parliament is already forgetting the lessons of Hillsborough. “No other family should ever have to go through what we went through. It is shameful what happened today.” Burnham, equally unhappy, said the result would be “deeply disappointing to all of the people who fought so hard for justice”. He added: “I cannot see how anybody can argue against the principle of equality in legal funding for bereaved families at inquests. “Until that principle is enshrined in law, the injustices will carry on happening, and the Establishment will continue to ride rough-shod over ordinary families. “I also fail to see how Tory MPs can vote against the Prime Minister’s promise, to victims of press intrusion, that there would be a second-stage inquiry.” During the Commons debate, Burnham said it was wrong that Ms Aspinall had to put the £1,000 she received in compensation for the death of her son James at Hillsborough towards legal fees. She was then “living on the breadline”, trying to cover the cost of fighting for justice. He asked: “How can that be right, that families in these circumstances - they’ve not
done anything wrong find themselves in that situation?” Burnham added: “It really cannot be possibly right that they are scratching and saving, and doing all those things, when taxpayers’ money is being paid to do them down by the other side. “The public sector spends taxpayers’ money like water, hiring the best QCs to line up in the courtroom and defend their reparations and their backs. “And the ordinary families are scrabbling around, re-mortgaging the house, doing whatever they can do, to try to put up some kind of fight against that. But how wrong is that? “Public money should pay to establish the truth, and that says there should be parity between the two sides in that process.” The Government indicated that it agreed with the “spirit” of Burnham’s call for parity of funding, but said any decision should await a report being written by James Jones, former Bishop of Liverpool. Burnham also forced a vote on his call for a law to require the Government to press ahead with the second planned phase of the Leveson Inquiry, which would look into the relationship between police and press. “I think there is growing suspicion among organisations - obviously Hacked Off, but others, too, campaigners for justice - that they are being slowly let down here, and that this thing is being slowly slid into the long grass,” he said.

Oh for a crystal ball! By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct
THE Queen’s official birthday celebrations, Euro 2016 and the loss of the legendary Muhammad Ali have all been prominent in the news … and the EU Referendum hasn’t been far from anyone’s thoughts, either.
The Observer/Opinium poll released on Saturday (4th June) showed the “Leave” party in the lead in the on-going Referendum debate. The markets reacted on Monday and sterling had a sluggish start to the week. Wednesday brought a pleasant surprise, with UK Manufacturing Data increasing by 2.2% in April and this, in turn, gave sterling a little boost.
Despite a record rise in exports because of a weakening pound, investors ignored this positive data - remaining cautious over the Brexit situation. If all this is beginning to sound familiar, be prepared for more of the same over the next few days. Interestingly, market research company Ipsos MORI has highlighted some of the popular
misconceptions held by the British public, prior to voting in the Referendum. Among other things, its survey reveals a belief that the UK is one of the top-three contributors to the EU budget rather than the fourth biggest, contributing 11%. The survey goes on to say that 23% of those questioned believe there are 10.5m EU
immigrants living in the UK- as opposed to the actual 3.5m. Last but not least, 63% believe that leaving the EU will reduce immigration. On the local front, the latest residential property price-survey, conducted last month by Tinsa, shows the Canary Islands are at the forefront of Spain’s property-price boom, and are among the best-
performing markets. According to a Servihabitat report, sales figures for the Canary Islands are forecast to increase by more than 10%. Currently, there are a number of unsold, completed properties dotted throughout Spain and the Canaries. However, the property market can continue its optimism because the research also points towards a reduction of unsold property, which is expected to fall by as much as 25%. The report also predicts that in the coming months, the number of people who choose to rent, rather than purchase property in the Canaries and Spain, will continue to rise. By the time my next column comes out, the voting will be over. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what the outcome of the Referendum will be. But what I can tell you is that if you have any currency requirements over the next week or so, don’t leave it until the last minute, or wait until directly after the Referendum.
Unless you are in possession of that elusive crystal ball, which can predict and guarantee the outcome, don’t make the assumption that the rate will move according to your personal belief on whether or not UK would/should leave the EU. In response to increased demand, our offices will be working additional hours in the lead-up to 23rd June (Thursday week). Please don’t hesitate to let us know if we can assist you at our Los Cristianos office. Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, keep on top of the currency market. You know it makes sense! By James McGrory, Chief Campaign Spokesman, Britain Stronger In Europe WITH just six days until Britain votes on the EU referendum, it is becoming ever clearer that this decision is going to be very close. Thursday’s vote is about the future. It is about the future of our country and the future for young people, who will have to deal with the consequences for the longest. For me, it is clear that Britain is stronger, safer and better-off in the European Union. To leave would be a leap into the dark, which would damage our economy, risking jobs and increasing prices. Across the country, campaigners from all walks of life have been sharing why they are so passionate about our role in the European Union. Economically, Britain is enhanced by being
an EU member. Being able to trade in the single market means having access to 500 million customers, with no tariffs and only one set of rules. This makes it easy for businesses, large and small, to expand outside the UK and trade in Europe. If we left, they’d have to negotiate 27 new trade deals, facing tariffs on our goods. The overwhelming majority of businesses have said they support Britain remaining in the EU. They benefit from having access to the single market, and many say they would not exist without this. The EU provides funding to businesses in the UK, supporting innovation and research. Many projects receive grants, and these are valuable projects that advance industry and technology - projects that could not have happened without this funding.
Don’t just take my word for it. Almost every credible, economic body has stated that leaving the EU will have a serious impact on the economy. The Bank of England has warned of a possible recession, while the IMF has said that a vote to leave could have a “pretty bad to very, very bad” impact on the economy. Leave campaigners have not set out an alternative plan for the economy if we choose to leave. They have advocated a number of different models over the last few months: to be like Canada, Norway, Iceland, or even Albania. None of these models would be suitable for the UK, and now they are advocating the worst one of all - to pull out of the single market and follow the trading rules of the WTO (World Trade Organisation). That would
mean tariffs of 12% for car manufacturers. Currently, our economy is prosperous, and set to grow. However, if we leave, the economy will suffer and, as is predicted by the Bank of England, could go into recession. This would mean fewer jobs and higher prices, so people wouldn’t be able to afford the lifestyles we currently enjoy. It would also mean there wouldn’t be any money for the Government to spend on services, damaging our NHS. I tend to listen to the experts on these things, and, in this case, they are overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the European Union, be they economists such as Mark Carney or Christine Lagarde, business owners, including Richard Branson and Alan Sugar, and NHS workers such as Simon Stevens, cur-
rent Chief Executive of the NHS, and the Royal College of Midwives. The EU has benefited us in numerous ways. Holidays are cheaper and easier. Air fares have been driven down as a result of our EU membership, which means holidays abroad are no longer a luxury for an elite few. Roaming charges are low, and soon to be nonexistent, which makes it easier to stay in touch when travelling. Young people have had their horizons broadened by our membership of the EU. They can now work, travel and study abroad with ease. The EU also supports our universities at home, providing them with vital funding for research, which means we can be world-leading. That is why the overwhelming majority of young people support remaining in the EU. This vote is about their
future, and a vote to remain will support that. The EU supports us in everyday ways. It supports working rights, providing protections such as paid holidays, which would be at risk if we leave. It supports maternity rights and has furthered the fight for gender equality. Our global world faces threats that are global in nature. These are best tackled by working with others to share intelligence, so we can deal more effectively with threats to our security. The European Arrest Warrant has allowed us to deport foreign criminals more effectively, and to bring to justice those that have escaped abroad. I want a Britain that co-operates with its allies abroad, with a strong economy and successful businesses, which is why I support a vote to remain in the EU on Thursday.

Don't Miss...
The new series of the world’s biggest motoring show continues. Chris Evans, Matt LeBlanc and Sabine Schmitz buy cheap second-hand cars and head for Venice. The aim? To prove road travel can be more luxurious than taking the train. Elsewhere, Rory Reid heads to New York to sample the all-electric Tesla Model X, while Chris Harris dons his race helmet to drive the most powerful Aston Martin of all time, the fearsome Vulcan. Bear Grylls and Brian Cox are this week’s Stars In A Rally Cross Car. The reboot of the show is finding its feet and the last episode was the best yet. It saw Sabine Schmitz make Chris Evans lose his breakfast by lapping Laguna Seca in an Audi R8. Chris Harris also made his first appearance, driving a Ferrari 250 Tour de France back to back with its new descendent, the F12 TdF. And fellow newbie Rory Reid did a great piece on the Ford Focus RS, a car that apparently anyone can drift! Reid’s performance was described by one TV critic as being “a breath of fresh air. Reid was funny, funky, modern and a glimpse into the future.” Last week’s episode also saw the piece that caused a media storm after it was shot in the UK earlier this year. Thankfully, the edited version left out the tasteless donuts within sight of the Cenotaph, but the piece which saw Matt Le Blanc being toured around London was the best visual film in years. Top Gear is back on track and this week’s edition should continue the upward curve.

Joining him in the BBC’s Referendum Centre are Jeremy Vine, analysing all the results as they come in. Emily Maitlis talks to politicians, constitutional experts and business leaders. The BBC’s economics editor, Kamal Ahmed, keeps a watchful eye on the reaction of the markets, and political editor Laura Kuenssberg assesses the impact these results will have in the days, weeks and years ahead.

The New Tate Modern: Switched on BBC2, 21:00
To mark the opening of the much anticipated, revamped Tate Modern, with its new Switch building more than doubling the amount of space it has on London’s Bankside, BBC2 goes behind the scenes to reveal new director Frances Morris’s drive to increase the amount of international, female and performance related work to make it a museum for the 21st century. With exclusive access to the Tate’s ‘secret stores’, where some of the new work will come from, we hear from members of its congregation who feel the £260m transformation of this cathedral to contemporary art is money well spent - and others who feel its expansion in a time of recession is sacrilegious. Andrew Marr and Brenda Emmanus present from the opening night celebrations with contributions from Tate supremo Sir Nicholas Serota, artists Tracey Emin and Antony Gormley, critics Waldemar Januszczak and Jennifer Higgie and comedians and painters Harry Hill and Vic Reeves.

Britain’s most famous Essex boy is back, as Joey Essex begins his latest series of intellectual challenges in a brand new seven part series of Educating Joey Essex. Fresh from his crash course in politics last year, Joey is once again on a mission to learn more about the world around him, and familiarise himself with the hot topics and big issues that everyone is talking about. This time around, Joey’s fact-finding assignments will be centred around the impending European Referendum. Joey will be getting back on board with politics as he puts his previous political know how into practise to get clued up on the European Referendum, as the landmark vote dawns on 23rd June. But can the man who once thought Richard & Judy created the world get to grips with European policy in time to vote yes or no? As part of his latest political onslaught, Joey will be speaking to Jeremy Corbyn, Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage.

Science broadcaster Dallas Campbell and Dr Hannah Fry explore just what it takes to bring the citizens of the sky back to the ground. Dallas has a front row seat when he is in the cockpit with one of just 26 pilots in the world qualified to land at Paro, Bhutan. Meanwhile, Hannah meets up with the air traffic controllers who, at some times of the year, deal with over 1,000 flights a day arriving at Atlanta - the busiest airport in the world. She also visits Bangor Airport in Maine where they are always on standby - there have been over 2,000 unscheduled landings in the last decade alone.

ITV Daytime’s resident judge, Robert Rinder, is lifting the lid on some of Britain’s worst crimes in a brand new documentary series, Judge Rinder’s Crime Stories. Used to ruling the courtroom in his own hit TV series, respected criminal defence barrister, Judge Rinder, is stepping out from behind the bench to take a closer look into a variety of major crimes. The brand new series will delve deep into each real-life case using witness accounts, CCTV footage and news reports to reconstruct defining moments. From murders to extreme cases of fraud, the series examines the police efforts that helped solve these crimes, as well as looking into miscarriages of justice. In the first episode, Judge Rinder examines the case of Laura Davies who was murdered by her 22-yearold boyfriend Jordan Taylor. Jordan was an unemployed martial arts enthusiast with a temper and Laura’s family knew that something wasn’t right. When Laura tried to end the relationship, she ran out the house and a passer-by witnessed her murder. It also reveals the case of Andreas Christopheros who was attacked at his own home when a beaker of sulphuric acid was thrown into his face, while his wife Pia and their 18-month-old son slept in the next room. While doctors battled to save Andreas’ life, it was down to the Devon & Cornwall police to catch the man who was responsible and find out why.

Mr v Mrs: Call The Mediator
17th June - 23rd June 2016
Tu e sd a
BBC2, 21.00
Behind closed doors, in more than 500 locations across England and Wales, a network of National Family Mediation (NFM) services are meeting separated couples attempting to resolve their disputes over money, children and property - without a courtroom battle. With privileged access to the private world of family mediation, this BBC Two documentary series will provide a unique insight into an element of modern British family life rarely seen by others. With NFM delivering an average of 16,000 mediations per year and 89 percent of cases closing successfully*, it can be an intense but effective process - as the separated couples make plans together, faceto-face, with the help of a skilled mediator. Using a hybrid of rig and crews between mediation sessions and at home, we’ll see how families deal with the practical and emotional reality of the changes they agree upon. In this first episode, Sue and Peter are divorcing but can’t agree on how their money should be split, after Sue left the family home for another relationship. In another case, Martin wants see the two sons he has with ex-partner Nicky, but she doesn’t want to see him and negotiations are proving difficult. We also meet Jason and Vicky, separated parents, who are struggling to share the parenting of their daughter. They haven’t spoken a word to each other for the last six months and after a complete breakdown in communication, their only point of contact is Vicky’s new husband. As skilled mediator Irene offers shuttle mediation between two separate rooms, will the two parties manage to reach an agreement?

The Secret Life of a Bus Garage ITV1, 23.00
Each morning hundreds of the capital’s buses roll out from Stockwell Bus Garage, a place that helps to keep London’s life-blood flowing. But it’s the people who work here that make the bus garage truly extraordinary. Made up of hundreds of people from more than 80 nationalities it is the UK’s most diverse workforce. This uplifting film tells the stories of these people. Akwasi is a Ghanaian Chief who has turned his back on the offer of tribal status (and seven wives) in order to drive the 170 to Putney. 73-year-old Nina was a Hungarian revolutionary and is ‘the Queen of the Garage’ having driven the 87 to Wandsworth for thirty years. As the son of a London bus driver becomes the capital’s new mayor, The Secret Life of a Bus Garage introduces us to one of the most remarkable faces of modern Britain, but one we rarely see on our televisions.

Celebrities compete in a contest of culinary skill. In the first of the heats, the first five celebrities undertake three tough culinary challenges in a bid to prove their cookery talent to judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace. Hoping to show they’ve got what it takes are comedian Tommy Cannon, TV presenter and actor Donna Air, TV hustler Alexis Conran, vlogger Marcus Butler and actor and singer Sinitta. The first challenge for the five hopefuls is the mystery box, the infamous test of imagination and creativity. The celebrities are then split into two groups to take on the challenge of cooking for the first time in a restaurant kitchen, preparing dishes for paying customers. In the final test, the contestants are asked to prepare a two-course menu of their own design. The celebrities work furiously in a last attempt to prove themselves to the judges, because at the end of this test one of them will be going home.

During one term at the University of Central Florida, This World follows the life of a group of frat boys as they embark on the pledging process, when new recruits have to prove themselves before they can become a fraternity brother. Most kids are joining because fraternities provide access to a powerful network of alumni throughout the US. But each year, students die or are injured in barbaric initiation rituals, known as hazing, and some argue that the way fraternity system is set up allows sexual assaults to occur during drunken campus parties. Research has shown that fraternity men are three times more likely to sexual assault than non-fraternity men.

What Britain Buys Channel 4, 20:00 What Britain Buys is an eye-opening and intriguing look at how we shop, which products we buy, and what our £6.7 billion a week shopping habit says about Britain today. This time, Mary Portas discovers how in 2016 it’s not just what we buy, but how we buy, that is changing -with the switch to contactless spending, with cards, phones and even watches. Mary looks at the trend of putting snail slime on the face, and face masks for the bottom; at the millions of mums - and dads - doing the school run in leggings; what car pool karaoke means for the dash cam; how smart toys are affecting the way our kids play; and how virtual reality is on the verge of changing the way we all see the world.

The Island of dreams
By Vanessa Vee WE see it every day … it’s there, just over the water. And, believe me, La Gomera is totally different from Tenerife. It’s peaceful, tranquil and attracts a type of clientèle alien to the norm of our Island.
Los Cristianos terminal, just down the road, so easy. A few minutes sorting out the paperwork and we were off! In all my years residing in Tenerife, I had visited our neighbouring island twice: once on a jeep safari, and the other for a hotel break when my eldest was just a few weeks old. So to take the car over, and to be able to explore, was rather exciting. I love driving aimlessly, with no particular place to go, and this was the perfect opportunity.
Initially, we headed up towards the National Park. I can describe the island very simply: it is just like one big Masca Valley, with seriouslybreathtaking views, as well as jaw-opening drops at the roadside! There’s something quite special about being able to explore a small island. Its circular coastline marks our boundary, allowing us to wander freely, safe in the knowledge that we won’t get too lost. If you don’t seek wild, vibrant night-life, or beautiful sandy beach-
es, nor dining on fish ‘n’ chips or a full English, here you will find an island unspoilt by mass tourism, featuring spectacular scenery and steep gorges, with white, stone cottages that salt the slopes. We stopped off for coffee in Valle Gran Rey, which was a delight. There just seemed to be an ambience about the place that has made me decide I really need to return and discover this beautiful island. The thought of ever staying in a four-star
hotel and devouring hotel food while here will never cross my mind again. So many quirky little restaurants on offer … who would want to? From restaurants in caves, to genuine rural eateries, one thing’s for sure: there is not a McDonald’s in sight! Instead, you’re offered freshly-grilled tuna steaks and other catches of the day, along with meaty stews, steaks and other cuts, as well as the speciality sauces found on all the Canary Islands.
I am sure that getting around La Gomera on foot would be far less terrifying than negotiating the winding, hilly, hairpin bends in a car. Yet the precipitous footpaths, seemingly so narrow in places, look as though they have been carved out for mountain goats. One thing I did note was the many trail options on offer, and all well signposted, so it’s definitely a walker’s paradise. The only way I can describe the forest is like something out of an Enid Blyton fairytale book - The Enchanted Forest or The Magic Faraway Tree. It really is surreal, where life seems to stand still. Until the road system was built, the people of La Gomera used to communicate across the valleys using a whistling
language called el silbo, which is actually quite fascinating. So my new task is where to stay for my next visit? Well, a hotel is definitely not on my list. There are so many guest houses, apartments, and bed-andbreakfasts to choose from, and we also found some great rural cabins, so that’s another plan. I promise you, La Gomera, I won’t leave it as long again ... until next time! Everything to everyone
By Brad Chermside
I WAS lucky enough last summer to get tickets for the BBK festival in Bilbao to watch MUSE, one of my favourite bands.
As head-liners, they were the last to play on the third and final night. That gave me a chance to enjoy some other behemoths of the music industry while I eagerly awaited the Devon three-piece. I saw Mumford and Sons crown the first night with a clever mixture of cerebral works from their latest album and chart anthems from their first two. James Bay proved he’s just as good live, if not
better than he sounds on record. And I’m not ashamed to say I cried a nostalgic tear listening to The Counting Crows play a greatest-hits set to a cacophonous reception. There was, however, one vital ingredient missing to make it the perfect summer festival: the charismatic, crowdpleasing front man or woman. Every single singer eschewed stage-diving into an ocean of 40,000 people, with 80,000 arms wide open ready to catch them. Not once did any of the performers say thank-you in Basque (Eskerrik asko), the local language. If they’d done so, the place would have erupted, and they’d have had the keys to the city forever. But there wasn’t so much as a high-five with the front row! Though I had an unforgettable time, I felt a little short-changed and my appreciation,
admiration and respect for the solo entertainer grew immensely. Whereas the original recording artist can get up on stage and play for his or her own satisfaction, the cabaret act can afford no such indulgence. For an hour, the self-contained soloist has to wear many hats simultaneously: singer,
comedian, cheer-leader, host, sound technician, waiter and/or public relations. I’ve even grabbed people off the street and seated them on countless occasions! In many cases, audience members comprise an instrument that has to be played skilfully - listening to accents to find
out where they’re from and thinking of something to say to connect; dedicating songs just to uncover names to make customers feel more like friends; pre-show checking the social-media profiles of fans and followers in attendance to bring up something funny to say about their lives, or maybe just re-
member what their kids are called. A competent and dedicated vocalist really does have to be everything to everyone, sparring away, song by song, using any number of these little tricks until the audience is ready to be knocked dead. The genius of the original singer-songwriters cannot be denied. That’s why the respect and adoration they’ve earned through their compositions give them the right to behave however they choose in front of thousands of their own fans. It’s hard not to wonder, though, how long they’d survive if thrown on to a stage in Tenerife, in front of a judgemental crowd. They’ve paid nothing to get in and are gathered, ready to criticise. And they will soon move on to the next free venue if they’re not hooked on first impressions!

Feel good day’s at Magic! WE usually associate Magic Lounge Club as an elegant nighttime venue, but what most people don’t realise is that by day, Magic is also transformed into a stylish but relaxed chill-out café.
With their new friendly daytime team, led by manager Donato, you’ll find a relaxed and welcoming ambience, where you can sit and watch the world go by on the raised, glass-fronted terrace, while enjoying the delights from the feelgood menu, which includes a wide range of salads, sandwiches, juices, smoothies and feel-good foods from around the world. With delights such as Vietnamese rice-paper rolls, Ramen & Mediterranean sharing platters on offer, as well as their “Magical” salads, which will certainly give you a big health boost, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice.
We asked the advice of Valerie, our friendly waitress, and ended up opting for the Mediterranean sharing platter for two, which includes feta cheese, marinated olives, tender slices of roasted beef & pork, humus & roasted veg, followed by a tasty selection of salads, sandwiches & wraps. Each salad can be customised to suit your taste, with an option of chicken, king prawn, tuna or roast beef, and you can add extra “boosts” such as Quinoa, mixed seeds or goji berries for that extra feel-good factor. Their juices & smoothies are also packed with healthboosting vitamins, minerals & anti-oxidants, proven to promote good health & well-being. With all these healthy options available, it’s no surprise that Magic is a firm favourite with all the gym bunnies out there, which is what
has prompted their latest offer, “Magic Gym Buddy”. This special offer includes a 20% discount off your bill between 12 noon and 5.30pm, with one hour’s free parking, 50% more protein on your dish for free, PLUS your 8th meal completely free! If this sounds like something for you, simply ask the staff to sign up! Remember, also, that you don´t only have to go to Magic in the daytime to get healthy. With a full premium drinks menu available, including cocktails & Champagne, it’s also the perfect place for an afternoon drink. You can sit back, relax & enjoy the sultry sounds of the live guitarist or saxophonist, playing every day between 1.30pm-3.30pm. So, whatever the occasion, for a truly magical day, come and see the new team at Magic Café, from 12 noon until 6pm, Monday-Saturday.

Back to basics By Carl Pattison

I KNOW it may seem like stating the obvious, but sometimes the simple task of washing and conditioning your hair can be complicated. It shouldn’t be a drama, but getting it wrong can waste money and time. And, ultimately, your hair suffers. Shampoo your hair when it feels dirty - there’s no law about how many times a week is best. Make sure you shampoo twice. The initial wash removes dirt, and the second cleanses. Concentrate on the scalp more than the hair itself. Rinse, rinse, and rinse again, before you con-

dition. If your hair’s dry, then it should be a masque, every time. Always comb your treatment through with a very wide comb, or with a flexible paddle brush. Rinse again - in cool water - and squeeze out any excess moisture. Pat dry with a towel - never, ever rub. This causes breakage and split ends, and can make the hair frizzy. Always apply serum to protect and smooth the hair. Even if it feels in
good condition, keep it that way. Never think you are bothering your stylist by asking questions about your hair-care routine at home. This is what we are here for. Our best-selling Kinessences range of products takes your hair from drab to fabulous, in only a few washes. The range includes Shampoo Masque Argan Oil And Protection Cream, to care for your hair, from start to finish.
Beach Couture
By Carl Pattison IT’S not everyone’s ideal situation, but dressing-up for the beach is a reality here in the Canaries. We are so used to seeing naked bodies or skimpy swimwear, but what’s going down at the beach this year, and what do you wear to look your best? For some, going to the beach is a trauma. Should you be brave, and show off what you have, or cover up and be discreet? It’s all about personal taste. In my opinion, if you have it, flaunt it. If you’re totally body-confident, no matter what your size, show it off. There’s no right-orwrong body shape. We are all individuals. But
from string bikinis to full body-suits, there’s something for everyone. The less material you wear, the more you’re going to exaggerate every curve of your body. If you have looked after your figure, then go for it. If you’re more of a curvy girl, then wearing something more modest can be more flattering. Stick to large-patterned styles - which aren’t too fussy - to slim
down your figure, and stay away from garish colours. It seems only right to cover up slightly as you come off the beach, so sarongs are excellent to slip on over your swimwear. Don’t be wandering the streets nearly naked. This year, primary colours appear to be the most-popular look, with hot shades being mixed and clashed together. And don’t forget those hats to protect delicate hair, and to cover up as it really heats up. The best varieties are the larger styles, because they look more stylish, and provide total cover. As in all areas of fashion, be yourself, and feel comfortable in what you are wearing.
Scientists say that restricting time spent in bed can help those who have trouble dropping off. And, they warn, attempting to recover lost sleep can turn insomnia into a chronic condition. Choosing to stay awake instead of laying in bed, attempting to fall asleep, is a tactic used in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for insomnia. Just last month, the American College of Physicians advised that CBT should be used as the first treatment for chronic insomnia, after scientists discovered that it improves the symptoms of the condition, without the nasty side-effects drugs can have. In this new study, University of Pennsylvania researchers evaluated how much time in bed was spent by three groups of sleepers over the course of a year. The three groups were: *Good sleepers *Good sleepers who suffered from acute insomnia and recovered *Good sleepers who now have chronic insomnia after previously being acute Initial results showed that 20% of good sleepers suffered from short-term
The cue for insomniacs to forget all about sleep
sleeping problems every year, with 7% of those going on to develop chronic insomnia. Nearly half the good sleepers with sleeping issues experienced persistent but periodic insomnia, while 45% made a recovery. Doctor Michael Perlis, director of the Penn Behavioural Sleep Medicine Programme, said: “Those with insomnia, typically, extend their sleep opportunity. They go to bed early, get out of bed late, and they nap. “While this seems a reasonable thing to do, and may well be in the short term, the problem in the longer term is that it creates a mismatch between the individual’s current sleep ability [which is low] and their current sleep opportunity [which is vast, as it has been extended] - and this fuels insomnia.” The findings mirror the behavioural model of insomnia - otherwise known as the 3P model - which blames sleep extension for long-term sleeping problems. Dr Perlis added: “Acute insomnia is, likely, a natural part of the human condition. If you think about the “fight flight” response, as a trigger for sleeplessness, this makes sense. “That is, it shouldn’t matter that it’s 3am and you’ve been awake for the last 22 hours. If you’re being threatened and you believe there is a
threat to your quality of life or existence, it’s not a good time to sleep.” The secret is to relax before going to bed. Have a warm bath: Listen to music or practise meditation or yoga. Use bath salts, or throw in Epsom salts and baking soda - one cup of each. These will relax you and also help remove toxins from your body. Don’t eat heavy meals close to bedtime: The energy your body generates to digest the meal will keep you awake. The best advice if not to eat anything 3 hours before bedtime. Play soft, soothing music: Lull yourself to sleep. You can even get CDs designed for that very purpose. Some are specially composed music, others simply have sounds of waves rhythmically breaking, or the steady pattern of a heartbeat. Get up at the same time every day: Make the effort, even on weekends and holidays. Once you’re awake, get up. Don’t lie in bed thinking about getting up. Just do it! Dr Perlis added: “It is understandable that sleeplessness has persisted as an adaptive response to such circumstances. “In contrast, it’s hard to imagine how chronic insomnia is anything but bad … and the clinical research data supports this position, given chronic insomnia’s association with increased medical and psychiatric morbidity.” Up to 50% of Americans are understood to suffer from acute insomnia each year, while 10% experience chronic insomnia, lasting longer than three months. Chronic insomnia increases the risk of depression and substance-abuse, as well as making people more likely to suffer from diabetes, heart disease and stroke. So start taking things a little easier if you have problems sleeping.

Spend more, enjoy more!
By Miruna Voicu IF you were to ask people who bought property in Tenerife what the attraction was, the answer would undoubtedly be the weather - and enjoying the sun.
Therefore, it makes sense that exterior furniture, for terraces, patios and gardens, will be some of your most important purchases. Whether it is for your own use, or you rent out the property, it is likely that a lot of time will be spent outside. So you must get it right. If you have the space,
make an area for eating, and a separate area for sitting and relaxing, and for sunbathing. There is nothing better than dining alfresco to make it feel as though you are on holiday, or sipping an aperitif on the terrace while reading about the terrible weather back home. If you don’t have sufficient room for separate areas, use multi-purpose furniture, such as armchairs that can be used at a dining table, but recline for relaxing and sunbathing. Also, take into account whether you will need to move your furniture indoors when you are not here, or cover it up in case of poor weather. This is definitely one area where you get what you pay for. The old, white, resin furniture, which looked cheap, has been replaced with simulated rattan (alu-
minium frame, and woven resin strips). It is stronger, light and easy to move, and looks
Life message for massage STUDENTS from an Adeje massage course recently organised a charity event through the Council’s Sports department, raising over 700 euros for the Walk for Life organisation. The Walk group help families and people affected by breast cancer, as well as donating funds to cancer research. This fun event also featured sack races and acrobatics, and about 70 people attended to take advantage of the massages on offer by the students. Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera
said: “This initiative shows the commitment the people of Adeje have to health and wellbeing”, adding that the town is always ready to help and participate in causes that improve
the lives of people in need, and society in general. Ferrera also congratulated the organisers and students, who gave up their time for the event.
much more luxurious. This development has completely changed the style of terrace furniture
in Tenerife, particularly in the bars and restaurants, which now look so much more stylish.
However, beware of buying a cheap version of this “rattan” furniture. Tenerife sun can be ferocious, and, if you buy a cheap set, expect it to start to split and fray within a couple of years. If you buy a sofa for your outside area, ensure that the cushions have removable covers, and are covered with a repellent fabric for dirt and water, so you won´t be washing them every five minutes, particularly if you have children or dogs! Buy the best quality you can afford, and it will prove a better purchase in the long run. Consider it an investment! All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo, who will come to your property and advise on what will fit, and how to make the most of your outside area.
Taucho striding out
ADEJE’S Taucho village, in the upper reaches of the borough, will celebrate the eighth Taucho Ethnographic Days from this evening (Friday) until Wednesday (17th - 23rd June). This year’s theme is “Walks, Paths and Landscapes” and events are being organised by the local fiestas’ committee and Adeje Department of Heritage, under Councillor Juan Desiderio Afonos Ruiz. The celebrations are part of the festival in honour of the Virgen de Coromoto, patron of this mountain hamlet. Councillor Desiderio said: “The programme has been put together by a team made up of the local fiesta committee, the neighbours of Taucho, the Asociación Cultural Imoque and the El Cardón group, who, together with the Council, have made this event a reality.” The programme begins this evening at 8pm in El Almácigo Recreation and Cultural Centre, with an inaugural
act and a dedication to the men and women who have changed the landscape locally. A conference follows, led by Victor Martín, Professor of Geography from the University of La Laguna, and a showing of the documentary “Adeje walks, paths and landscapes … Homage a Don Román Álvarez Fraga, the man who changed the countryside”, with music from the Asociación Cultural Imoque. There will be an ethnographic route tomorrow (Saturday), taking in the walks, paths
and landscapes, with residents of the hamlet, music, and a photography exhibition mounted by Adeje’s Heritage Department. Running alongside these events will be local, hand-made products and crafts, wine, cheese, Vilaflor cakes and biscuits, bread and honey, on sale to the public. There will also be a sheep-shearing display and a cattle show, a traditional dance in the Tio Victor bar, with music from the Los Alzados group, and lots more.

Not only does neutering stop kittens, but it also prevents your cat from developing some serious cancers and other diseases. If you love your pet and you want to help keep it safe and healthy, neutering is imperative, even if your cat lives inside all the time. Males can be neutered from four months onwards and females five months. And for June only, neutering is just 35 euros for males and 65 for females. We collaborate with four vet practices, in Las Chafiras, Los Cristianos, Las Americas and Gran Sur. Contact us to receive your unique promotion code, via our website www.
cats-welfare -tenerife. com/contacts Otherwise, ring or whatsapp Maria on 646 629 129 (seven days a week. From 9am until 6pm. Pip, Pip hooray Congratulations to Pip Brown, winner of our Raffle Hamper with ticket No.383. The raffle raised a superb 160 euros and we are thrilled. Thank-you to everyone who bought a ticket, and thank-you to Michelle Bentley for making and donating the
hamper to help fund the cats and kittens. As you may know, we get no Government or Council funding and rely totally on donations. We are always looking for raffle and potential hamper items to raise money, so if you have anything suitable, please drop it into our San Blas charity shop, or message us and we will arrange collection. Kittens If you are considering a new pet, we have many kittens available, and all

different colours, sizes and temperaments as well as male and female. If you are thinking of adopting, call Maria for a no-obligation chat about current availability. All kittens go on trial, so you can have time to be sure you have made the right decision. If you choose to adopt a black kitten, the injections, micro-chipping and neutering will be paid for by us. That’s because we find it harder to home black kittens because they are not seen as “pretty” by some people. They are! It is much better for the kittens to be homed in pairs so they have company and a playmate while they are left alone, at home. To encourage the adoption of two kittens of any colour, we pay for the second one’s injec-
tions, microchip and neutering. Let’s not also forget the adult cats we have awaiting homes. All adult cats can be seen on our website www. cats-welfare -tenerife/ pets. They are all neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped so ready to go on trial immediately. Female strays? If you come across a female stray cat that appears pregnant, or is obviously nursing small kittens, please contact us immediately. We need to make a careful decision about the best time to help her and, if possible, home the kittens. If she is in a safe area and being fed, we could monitor her for a week or two until we feel it’s the optimum time to help her and the kittens.
If she is not safe - stray dogs around, etc. - then we may intervene immediately. But we do not have a refuge and, with few foster homes to call on, the decision has to be made carefully. If you can supply us full details and, ideally, pictures, it will help us enormously. Your donations Do you have anything to donate to help us raise funds. Items can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind HiperDino). It is open seven days a week, from 10am6pm, but 11am-4pm on Saturdays. If you don’t have transport, or have large bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557 and he will arrange collection from you.
Larger than life! MOST people opt for a puppy or a smaller dog, but we have a lot of large animals at the refuge which often get overlooked. And last week, three of them struck lucky! Holy, Goda and Roa have been the chosen ones to start a new life in Germany. We are so happy for them because they have lived in the refuge for a while and thoroughly deserve their loving new homes in Germany. We wish them and their new mums and dads well, and we also thank the people involved in escorting the dogs on their
flights. Please remember that if you are travelling to Germany and would like to escort a dog which has been given the chance of a home there, do contact us. Everything is done by staff from our German charity sponsors Aktiontier, from the moment you arrive at the airport here to when you touch down in Germany. It just takes a few minutes of your time at the South Airport to check the dogs in. Who’s for walkies? We are always looking for volunteers to walk the dogs, so if you have
a spare afternoon, please come along and make one or two animals extremely happy. Grateful thanks We are thankful for all the support from our many volunteers and supporters, of all nationalities. You help us in so many ways … adoptions, dogwalking, plus donations of bedding, sheets, tinned food and towels. You also help ease the pain and suffering of some of our many strays, who may have endured years of physical, and mental, abuse. Please call us on 922 778 630 if you can help in any way, or visit the refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays (1-4pm). Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the north-bound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. Email the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier. org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del SOL.

Darters deploy, at the double! THE first of our in-season knockout events attracted a healthy turn-out of 92 players, battling it out in the doubles competition last Friday.
It was the highest number of entries for any such event for a good few years, so well done to all those who made the effort. Let’s see if we can beat that in the singles! With the high turnout, it should have been a real challenge to pick a winner at any of the five venues, but not
so in Division 1. Reigning doubles champions Mitch and
London, from Phoenix Bar, made it through a tough draw at Gaffers
to book their chance of at least having a go at defending their title. Standing in their way will be Richard and Andy, from local rivals Pas O Nadas A, who also deserve credit for getting through a strong line-up at Exiles Bar. Things were a bit different in Division 2 because the final will be contested by two pairs, with all due respect, whom not many people would have had a flutter on. So congratulations to Tony and Chris from Sundowners, winners at The Tavern. They will face Mark and
Baz, from Division 2 newcomers The Tavern, who brushed everyone aside at Legends. Bar 180, on Golf del Sur, welcomed the 24 ladies vying for a bit of glory at our finals night in September. Master of ceremonies Robin informs me that a competitive evening was enjoyed by all, and especially by Pas O Nadas B pairing Jo and Beatrice, and Picassos’ duo Emma and Shaz, who will be delighted at staking places in Nauta Bar’s annual finals’ night extravaganza! A big thank-you to all the hosting venues,
and to all you volunteer chalkers. We know you love it! Doubles (Knockout winners) Division 1 At Gaffers: Mitch and London (Phoenix) At Exiles: Richard and Andy (Pas O Nadas A) Division 2 At The Tavern: Tony and Chris (Sundowners) At Legends: Mark and Baz, (The Tavern) Ladies At Bar 180: Jo and Beatrice (Pas O Nadas B) & Emma and Shaz (Picassos) Finals will be played at Nauta Bar on Friday, 30th September
Ñandú’s end-of-term review
IT is the time of year when we all reflect on the season just finished, and Ñandú do it with a broad smile of pride. Those involved with the club can now take a wellearned break as they look back at another historical year.
This season has been the most successful in
the club’s history as the team collected the following honours: · Undefeated League champions · League Cup winners · Canarian Cup champions · Canarian 7s champions · National Championships, bronze winners · Canarian 7s Player of the Tournament · Adeje Multi-cultural · Team of the Year We have shared these moments with the Ñandú family and in the words of club official Mike Furby, this has been the best year
of rugby since we have been involved with the game. The quality and style of play has shown just how much the players have improved, and how their dedication and commitment (often training four times a week), has resulted in many fantastic performances. The past season will be the last for some familiar faces. Facundo Patsouris is moving to England to ply his trade in the ultra-competitive Under-18s league; Edu Francoli will play in the
older age-group, and Danila Borisov will be moving to pastures new as he attends university. Wingate teachers and coaches Jamie Whelan and Rachael Watson, who have also completed their third season with the club, will be moving to Malawi and Bournemouth respectively. They both expressed their gratitude to the committee for supporting them, the sponsors for providing everyone with opportunities, Wingate School for its endless assistance, both
financially and in terms of encouragement, and to the players for being, quite simply, the best group of young men a coach and club could ask for. “We would like to wish the club every success in the future, and Ñandú will always be a part of everything we do,” they added. The end-of-season Awards’ Evening was a fitting finale - an emotional affair as goodbyes were said and memories shared. The club thank the management and staff
at Showtime Tenerife for making it a memorable experience. However, as with any end, there are new beginnings, and the club, now in its best shape ever, has a bright future. New players are joining, and new coaches will take the helm as we look to an exciting future. Ñandú will return after a short summer break, and if you would like to be part of this fantastic experience, or can offer help or support in any way, please contact Paul on 664 361 058.

Canadian F1 Grand Prix
Lewis beating them to the punch again! LEWIS Hamilton’s luck has finally turned, as he proved on Sunday by winning the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, thanks to a pitstop error by Ferrari.
And, with Muhammad Ali’s death still on his mind, Hamilton celebrated successive victories with a little shadow-boxing on top of his car, then the legendary Ali shuffle when he jumped down. “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” he radioed to his crew after winning his fifth Cana-
dian Grand Prix and the second in a row. “That was for Muhammad Ali.” The British star dedicated the victory to Ali, who died the previous week, and said he couldn’t stop thinking about the former world heavyweight champion - even with 15 laps still to go.
Football stars in Tenerife
While Euro 2016 continues in France, some footballers are enjoying their pre-season down time in Tenerife.
This week, Hoops bar in Funchal, Los Cristianos, had a visit from Celtic player of the year Leigh Griffiths (top). He posed for every picture and signed every autograph! Meanwhile, fellow Celtic striker, Anthony Stokes (middle), enjoyed his night in the Dubliner bar. And Wolves wonder kid Jordon Graham (bottom), was pictured on twitter enjoying a few day’s relaxation in La Caleta.
“I never really dedicate wins to anyone, but it’s someone who’s really inspired me so much throughout my life,” said Hamilton “I was driving, and I was just thinking of him, and thinking, maybe, he would be watching the race, I don’t know. So that’s to him and his family. Rest in peace.” But he needed a huge slice of luck to maintain the Mercedes team’s Formula One dominance, and it came via Sebastian Vettel’s two-pit-stop strategy, enabling Hamilton to clinch his 45th career F1 win. Vettel took the early lead with an audacious move at the start, but gave it back for good when the Ferrari went to the pits - for the second time - in lap 37. Hamilton made it through the 70 laps on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve with one stop, finishing about five seconds ahead of Vettel. The win allowed Hamilton to trim team-mate Nico Rosberg’s lead in the championship from 24 points to nine, at 116-107. Vettel moved into third in the points race, on 78, and said he didn’t second-guess his team’s calculation that fresher tires would help him catch Hamilton. “I will always defend our strategies,” said Vettel, who won here in 2013 on his way to a fourth straight Formula One title. “That’s a decision we do as a team. Kept in hindsight, it’s always easy.” Valtteri Bottas, in a Williams, was third his best finish of the season and his sixth haul of points in seven races. Red Bull rookie Max Verstappen, the only non-Mercedes driver to pick up a win this year, was fourth. Hamilton and Rosberg, starting 1-2 in the front row, again touched wheels from the off, while Vettel
squeezed around them both to take the lead. Hamilton said he engaged the clutch and the car didn’t react. Rosberg wasn’t quite as calm. “I was very angry in the moment, but that’s racing,” he said. “In the end, it’s my job to make sure I’m in front after a battle like that.” The German driver, who emerged in 10th place, added: “It was very costly for me because I lost a lot of places, and from then it was an uphill battle trying to fight back.” But he did work his way back through the field and was in fifth position on the penultimate lap when he tried to squeeze past Verstappen on the outside. He couldn’t hold it, spinning off the course, but managed to straighten himself out and maintain his position. Kimi Raikkonen, in the other Ferrari, finished sixth, and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo seventh, just a fortnight after a pit-stop fiasco cost him an almost-certain victory, to Hamilton’s benefit. Hamilton, continu-
ing his Ali theme, said: “Growing up in Britain and setting my sights on a sport that had few black role models, Ali was someone I latched on to as a child. “Obviously, in Formula One, there was no one of the same colour as us as a family, so it was another athlete for me to look up to. “He was a unique, iconic individual who had a character unlike anyone else’s. And everyone aspired to be like him.” Hamilton added: “I wish I could have spoken with the charisma he had, or the comedic side he had … that confidence he could carry into a fight and outwit and outsmart his opponents. “I think the things he stood for were important - believing in who you are and not letting anyone dictate who you have to be.” Ali was a three-time world heavyweight champion, and Hamilton could claim his fourth Formula One title if he keeps going like this … and if Rosberg continues going in the opposite direction.
