Tenerife opens arms to giant conferences Continued from front Routes Africa takes off on Sunday for three days, and the Starmus Festival, which starts on Tuesday, promises to be the biggest and best yet. Eleven Nobel Prize laureates, from a variety of fields, will be here for the week-long event. They include David Gross, Joseph Stiglitz, Adam Riess, Brian Schmidt, Robert Wilson, François Englert, Eric Betzig, Carol Greider, Elizabeth Blackburn, Edvard Moser and MayBritt Moser. Also, some of the most high-profile scientists and science communicators in the world will be in attendance. Brian Cox, who will be among the speakers, is best known as the presenter of TV science programmes, like Wonders of... and is widely seen as a rising star and longterm heir to David Attenborough. Brian Green, Kip Thorne, Martin Rees, Jill Tarter and Carolyn Porco, Eugene Kaspersky and NASA scientists Alfred McEwen and Joel Parker will also talk. As will Richard Dawkins, who will present another speech on his controversial theories. But the star of the entire Starmus Festival will again be Stephen Hawking. He dazzled at the last Starmus, and this year’s event is being held in his honour. He arrived in Tenerife a couple of weeks ago, and again spoke of how much he loves our Island.

This unique event sees Art, Music and Science colliding, and this year there is a world-class music line-up. Among those taking part are composer Hans Zimmer. He has composed over 150 film scores, included the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Gladiator, The Last Samurai, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception and The Lion King which earned him an Oscar in 1994. Sarah Brightman will perform a one-off concert with Tenerife Symphonic Orchestra, and the legend that is Rick Wakeman will offer a tribute to David Bowie, with hits such as Space Oddity and Starman. Legendary producer Brian Eno, the inspiration behind Roxy Music, to name just one act, will give the keynote speech of Starmus on the topic, At the Crossroads of Art and Science. Legendary astronauts and cosmonauts Alexei Leonov, Rusty Schweickart and Chris Hadfield will also have a role in the Festival. The Piramides of Aro-

na, in central Las Americas, hosts the main part of the conference, while the Santa Cruz auditorium is the venue for the special concert. There is also a trip to the Space Observatory in La Palma in the packed schedule. Meanwhile, the international aviation industry will gather in Tenerife on Sunday for the 11th annual Routes Africa forum, over three days (2628th June). Routes Africa, dedicated to improving airconnectivity across the African continent, stimulates the African aviation industry by bringing together airlines, airports and tourism authorities to discuss new air services. Tenerife Tourism Corporation is hosting the event, with support from

the Canary Islands Government. Tenerife, closer to the African continent than the European mainland, aims to become a connecting aviation hub, or “logistical steppingstone”, between Africa and the Americas and Europe. Nearly six million tourists a year travel to the largest Canary Island for its beautiful beaches, national park, historical towns and warm climate. And Routes Africa will provide Tenerife with a unique opportunity to showcase these attractions, and make the case for introducing new air services. Investment in Tenerife’s infrastructure will support further growth in the tourist sector. A new cruise terminal will open at Santa Cruz Port in September, five hotels

- all five-star - will open over the next two years, and there are plans to invest 120 million euros in a new terminal at Tenerife South Airport. The African aviation market also presents significant development opportunities. International Air Transport Association (IATA) figures predict that it will grow by 4.7% to 294 million passengers a year by 2034. It also predicts that seven of the world’s 10 fastest-growing markets will be in Africa: Malawi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia. Some of the industry’s most senior network planners will attend Routes Africa to capitalise on the predicted growth of the market,

including representatives from South African Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Malawian Airlines, Fastjet and major European carriers such as Iberia, Norwegian and Alitalia. Around 200 professionals are expected to attend the event. Delegates will also get the chance to hear industry leaders discussing the latest issues and trends at the “Strategy Summit” conference. Speakers include Richard Bodin, Chief Commercial Officer at Fastjet; Elijah Chingosho, Secretary-general at African Airlines Association (AFRAA), and Fernando Estrada, Vueling’s Chief Strategy Officer. Adrian Newton, Group Director at UBM EMEA, which organises Routes events, said: “Routes Africa has an important role to play in the development of the African aviation market. “As the host of this year’s event, Tenerife is in a great position to demonstrate the key role it can play in the development of air-connectivity within the region.” Carlos Alonso, Tenerife Government (Cabildo) President, added: “Tenerife is very keen to improve its air-connectivity with Africa and serve as an Atlantic platform for three continents. “So holding Routes Africa on the Island will be a unique opportunity for us to demonstrate our potential to senior representatives of the world’s major airlines.”

Rajoy anger over PM’s proposed Gibraltar trip MARIANO Rajoy, Spain’s acting Prime Minister, was annoyed about David Cameron’s planned EU referendum campaign visit to Gibraltar last Thursday.

The British Prime Minister cancelled his pro rally there following news that Labour MP Jo Cox, 41, had been attacked and murdered in her constituency, which led to all activity being suspended by both the Leave and Remain campaigns until Monday. Rajoy said earlier that although he wanted Britain to remain in the EU, Cameron should not visit Gibraltar to make the case. He told Spanish National Radio: “The Government does not

like Mr Cameron travelling to Gibraltar. What is being debated is that the United Kingdom remain in the EU or leave the EU, and the campaign should happen in the United Kingdom and not in Gibraltar”. Conservative Leave

campaigner Liam Fox, also on a visit to Gibraltar, and speaking before the MP’s murder, said Cameron “must make clear that whatever the referendum result, the UK will fully back the sovereignty and security of Gibraltar. The message

must be completely unequivocal”. Fox added: “Gibraltar’s successful economy is based on tourism, shipping, financial services and online games. All would benefit from a free market without the supremacy of EU law and the regulations imposed by Brussels.” Gibraltar is a selfgoverning British overseas territory so if the UK leaves the EU, then Gibraltar, which is 2.2 square miles and stands at the mouth of the Mediterranean bordering Spain, also leaves. Before the referendum yesterday (Thursday), Gibraltar was covered by EU rules governing the single market, specifically the free movement of people. But in March, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, Spain’s Foreign Minister, told Spanish radio that Spain would

demand control of Gibraltar the “very next day” after a British exit from the EU, according to the Gibraltar Chronicle. Gibraltar’s First Minister, Fabian Picardo, told Sky News last month: “If Gibraltar wanted to have access to the single market and the rights we enjoy today of free movement, we would have to again consider joint sovereignty with Spain, which no one in Gibraltar is prepared to consider.” Jo Cox, a Labour MP for just over a year, died after being shot and stabbed in an attack by a man in her constituency in Birstall, West Yorkshire. Thomas Mair, 52, from Birstall, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday charged with murdering Mrs Cox and other related offences.

Demolition task is racing ahead THE demolition of the disaster area’s collapsed building and surrounding structures in Los Cristianos advances at a fast pace.

The demolition company expected to take

15 days to complete the work, but it is already well ahead of schedule. This work has led to the temporary evacuation of about 33 homes and commercial premises of the four adjoining buildings. And Arona Town Hall rehoused 50 people in rented apartments. Work began on Mon-

day as planned, and the workmen are going at a good pace. The project management announced that, with the safety guarantees, the job should be completed by the end of next week. The first part of the work enabled investigators, finally, to get to the origin of the 14th April

Let’s stamp out this domestic violence!

THE Cabildo’s Organic Gender Violence Unit, under the Institute of Social Care and Geriatric (IASS), covers an average of 4,000 cases of domestic violence per year, and the number is growing.

And, worryingly, Technical Director Juliet Martin said: “It is a scourge that is much more severe than we think and perceive.” Martin, who has experienced years of

serving women victims of male violence, expressed her deep regret about society in general. “Society is getting used to this situation and we need fix a problem that continues to grow,” she said. “Many of those 4,000 are resident in the South of the Island, and many are not of Tenerife origin.” She attributed the proliferation of this problem to the social customs of previous generations and, in her opinion: “We need to come up with genuine working practices for a long-term goal.

“Employment is a fundamental key to solving this because work generates independence, strength and self-esteem.” Martin added: “I take my hat off to those who come up with initiatives and people who try to help, as it’s a big door we are trying to open. “But as I’ve mentioned, employment is fundamental and we need the help of the business community to eradicate what is a very, very serious matter. “We want to stamp out gender violence on the Island.”

collapse, in which seven people died. It was the first time they had been able to see with their own eyes what had happened in the building’s basement to cause the disaster. Work will continue this weekend, and the

streets of Amalia Alayón and Valle Menéndez will be closed temporarily. The investigators’ probing work is slow and methodical. The latest estimate is that their report will be ready for publication some time in September.

Death of a runner

A VETERAN trail-runner, aged 49, died on Sunday from cardiac arrest while taking part in a mountain sporting event in La Laguna. The tragedy occurred just after 9.30am on the Lomo Los Dragos track in El Batan, during the annual Circular Trail of Carboneras. Other athletes tried to resuscitate the man until the Canarian Emergency Service (SUC) paramedics arrived, but they failed to save him. The SUC mobilised two ambulances and the medical helicopter, while local police and firefighters also attended.

US gun law still the rule

THE United States Senate has again rejected plans to tighten gun controls, including the restriction of the sale of weapons to people on terrorism watch lists.

Four proposals were brought before the Senate after 49 people died in a horrific attack on a gay nightclub in Florida. But Democratic and Republican senators voted along party lines, blocking each other’s bills. And senators disagreed strongly about how to prevent more attacks happening. Republican Senator John Cornyn said: “Our colleagues want to make this about gun control, when what we should be making this about is the fight to eliminate the Islamic extremism that is the root cause for what happened in Orlando. “My colleagues, in many ways, want to treat the symptoms without fighting the disease.” But Democratic Senator Barbara Mikulski said: “Why is it we would go through such incredible scrutiny to board an airplane to protect me against terrorists, and yet we have no scrutiny of the people on the terrorist watch list to be able to buy a gun?”

New race track still awaiting green light EVERYTHING moves slowly in Tenerife. But eventually, work does begin. Unless, of course, the subject is the eagerly-awaited motor circuit.

In May 2015, it was all systems go for the track. Or so it seemed. The Cabildo confirmed it had awarded Italian company Onda Rossa the 30-million-euro contract to build the track and infrastructure in Atogo, Granadilla. The building work, will take 21 months, when it finally begins. Onda Rossa has also been awarded the administrative and management contract for the next 35 years.

Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said: “The company has considerable experience in Italy, constructing roads, airports and car parks, and has worked on the Monza circuit. “This award is very important to the Island for the generation of economic activity and job creation - and it adds to the tourism industry.” We were led to believe that the project was already underway, and that the physical work would begin last year, in late June or early July. Yet here we are, over a year later, and nothing has happened. Not one piece of ground has been levelled; no tarmac has been laid. The grumbles have turned to anger. And now, the Granadilla Mayor has gone public.

“For months, Granadilla de Abona has been asking the Cabildo for explanations about why they have not started the work on the motor circuit,” said Mayor Jaime González Cejas. “This should be clarified right away, and the insular administration must avoid speculation.” It is believed that the Cabildo is still awaiting

South Hospital has new comfort zone!

IN just a couple of weeks, the first phase, comprising 49 beds in Tenerife South Hospital, will be installed, which is a huge step forward for the building as a whole.

Guía de Isora Mayor Pedro Martin confirmed the news, following a conversation with Regional Health Minister Jesus Morera. A delighted Martin said: “Finally, we will begin to see commit-

ments fulfilled by this important health infrastructure. It is payment on a debt, that has been outstanding for many years, which the Canary Islands Government had with the citizens and the mayors of this area.” He added: “The launch of these first 49 beds means we can already start talking about something more than just a centre with medical specialities.” Mayor Martin had more good news from the Ministry of Health: there are plans to introduce another 98 beds

in the coming months, which will complete the next phase. The Guía de Isora Mayor also confirmed that the hospital will be able to work at full capacity in some areas, such as offering chemotherapy treatment for patients in the South, thus by-passing their lengthy trips up to hospitals in Santa Cruz. The South Hospital currently operates basic services and an emergency department. But at long last, things are moving, which will please thousands in the South.

verification to changes that have been agreed with the contractor. The tweaks to the project are unclear, but it seems that they have caused the delay. However, this does not wash with the Mayor. “There is a fear that the modifications could cause the stoppage of the completion of the work, and force the delay to the process,” said González Cedjas. “There is much confusion.” The Mayor regretted “that the explanations given by the Minister of Sports and the Presi-

dent of the Cabildo, Cristo Perez and Carlos Alonso respectively, have been vague and indeterminate”. In short, the silence is deafening. The circuit in Atogo, in the area called Los Duques, is slated to be sited in a 1,322,341sq/m complex. The farmland was acquired by Tenerife Cabildo a couple of years ago. The asphalt is the main element of the complex, and its requirements in terms of design are said to meet the latest safety criteria, and current regulations issued by the International Automobile Federation (FIA). The local government gave the 30m-euro project the official green light last May, with an agreed execution period of 21 months. Another 35-40m-euro sum was set aside for the completion of the project. So far, though, there has been no actual construction.

There is much local scepticism about the project, and one local said: “For 40 years, they have been fooling us. We do not believe anything until we see it.” The government’s involvement goes back generations, but on 25th March 1995, the official file into the building of a Tenerife motor-circuit was opened. This was officially adopted on 12th March 2008 and renamed the Insular Sports Complex Motor Centre. The first draft of the project, which was developed between 1997 and 2000, included a 4,067.95-metre track with a paddock, buildings, autocross circuit and 104,000sq/m for parking. The latest draft is much grander. The main track is slightly longer and would see a top speed for a Formula 1 test car of around 310kph. If it ever gets built, of course!

Adeje beaches earn a high-five accolade

ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez and Ricardo Redondas, the regional Department of Health’s Director-General, along with representatives of those in charge of the borough’s beaches, have raised Blue Flags over the beaches of Troya I and II, Fañabe, El Duque and Torviscas. In fact, Adeje’s total of five is the most earned by any borough - together with San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Las Palmas) and Tías (Lanzarote) - this year in the provincial region of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and throughout the

Canary Islands. Mayor Rodríguez said: “The Costa Adeje beaches are a fundamental part of our tourism offer, which is a leader in the trade, and known for its excellence. “These are just some of the reasons why we take so much care of our natural spaces - and

there are many here in Adeje”. He added: “This is a job of work for all those working for and in tourism, and in the care of our destination. “The beaches are spaces used by tourists and residents, and it is a mark of their quality that we have re-

ceived these Blue Flags. “I want this to encourage us to continue to advance and guarantee a future for what is our economic motor – tourism - with excellent professionals, businesses committed to the industry, and a destination that continues to grow to meet the needs of 21st century tourism”. Redondas backed him up, saying: “The beaches are spaces of leisure, of shared conviviality, and earning a Blue Flag reinforces the merits of these public spaces, which are there to be enjoyed equally by our residents and visitors.”

He also revealed that, in conjunction with the national Blue Flag organisation, they were looking at initiating a new award,“Playas Saludables” (Healthy Beaches), and said the Adeje Mayor was supporting the idea. “Next year, if we continue to work along these lines, we could be adding a new element to the Costa Adeje Blue Flags.” The Blue Flag Programme is owned and run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a nongovernment, non-profit organisation.

Flags are awarded to beaches and marines that meet high standards in areas such as hygienic conditions, water quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management. Beaches and marinas are checked over by independent inspectors, and the Flags are awarded or withdrawn annually. They are a mark of quality, and recognise the effort in tourist destinations which work to defend sustainable development.

Cold facts about your anti-biotics SOME 50% of Spaniards believe that anti-biotics are used to combat viruses, fight colds and treat the flu, but that’s an extremely dangerous assumption. It is all the more dangerous because the incorrect use of this medication serves only to strengthen its real enemy: bacteria, which are becoming increasingly resistant. The EU’s Eurobarometer survey on antimicrobial resistance reveals widespread ig-

norance about the real purpose of anti-biotics in Spain. It says: “The rise of resistant microbes is a threat to global public health. It is responsible for the avoidable deaths of humans and animals, increased healthcare and veterinary costs, and productivity losses.” A woman in America last month suffered an infection by “super-bacteria”, which proved immune to the strongestavailable anti-biotics. It

was a sign of things to come, warned experts. According to Eurobarometer’s study, 48% of Spaniards believed that anti-biotics killed viruses, while 37% knew that they didn’t, compared with 43% overall in the EU. A further 45% believe they are effective against a cold or flu, but 48% say this is wrong. Overall, in the EU, 36% of respondents said anti-biotics were good against the flu. Yet a vast majority of

Spaniards (85%) said they are aware that an inappropriate use of anti-biotics makes them less effective, in line with the EU average of 84%. The confusion may be attributable, partly, to just 23% of Spaniards receiving information about these prescription drugs over the last year, compared with the European average of 33%. Those who did receive information, did so mostly from their doc-

tor (48%), significantly above the 32% average of Europe, where people are exposed to publicawareness campaigns. But Spain has a strategic plan to increase the awareness. Meanwhile, a report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control finds that Spain is increasingly vulnerable to anti-biotic-resistant bacteria. That’s 47% of Spaniards taking this medication last year, according to the Eurobarometer,

which puts Spain second to Malta (48%) and far above the 34% EU average. The survey also shows that between 2013 and 2016, this rate grew 9%, even as it declined by five points in neighbouring France and Portugal, and by 1% overall across the EU. Health authorities are asking for a more rational use of anti-biotics, not just in humans but also in animals raised for human consumption.

Canarians are still spending the least

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Decisions, decisions BY the time you read this, Britain should have voted to remain in the EU and Nigel Farage can return to his day job of being a member of the EUROPEAN parliament. A job that brings him in a rather nice 125,000 pounds a year.

Not bad for a man who wants to be out of Europe. I trust he will now stand down! In Spain this weekend, it’s the second General Election in six months. For many, it may have slipped under the radar. Don’t feel too much like an ostrich because many Spaniards have either forgotten or don’t care. The Christmas election splintered the political system in Spain, and, in the last six months, nothing has changed. None of the four political parties could agree a deal to govern, so we go again on Sunday. Incumbent Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy should again lead his party to victory. But if the polls are to

be believed, he will again not have enough seats to form a government. And this is when the fun begins, because nobody wants, or will allow, another long, drawn-out process. Spain has spent the whole of 2016 in limbo. No laws have been passed, no budgets agreed, no business deals rubber-stamped. It’s a mess. If Rajoy cannot do a deal with the PSOE party, he is probably finished. In fact, Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez will also get the tap on the shoulder. This means Spain could end up with a coalition government with an unelected Prime Minister. Hopefully, one not as mad as Gordon Brown! So this makes the election on Sunday unique. The public are being asked to vote for one of the two leading parties, safe in the knowledge that both rivals leaders (and they hate each other as much as Trump and Clinton) could be out of the picture in a week or two. With the American Presidential Vote still to come, 2016 is proving to be a historic year.

SPENDING in the Canaries continues to be far below the national average, and also below the figures given before the onset of the economic crisis in 2008.

However, there has been a slight improvement over the past two years. It’s not that significant, but at least it certifies signs of recovery, and some are seeing it as the “green shoots”. The 2015 Household Budget survey by the National Statistics Institute (INE) puts the

Canary Islands as the region with the lowest spending per person (9,009 euros) per household (23,372 euros). This is slightly higher than figures in the last survey, at 104 euros per person and 250 euros per family, The difference between the region and

the national average is around 18% by citizens and almost 15% in the case of household spending. Last year was the first since 2008 in which the average pay-out of Spanish households increased. It did so by 1.4%, to reach 27,419 euros. The spending per person had also risen slightly since 2014, by 0.6%. Only the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla have lower levels of spending per person than those in our Archipelago. The Canary Islands is followed by the Andalusia and Extremadura regions with lowest budgets - 9,034 and 9,294 euros per citizen respectively. By contrast, the Basque Country, with 14,000 euros per person, plus Madrid and Navarra - both with around 12,600 - are at the top of the spending tree.

Mighty medical mystery THE Canarian Health Service (SCS) has a total of 351 vacancies for specialists, doctors and pharmacists, according to the Official Gazette, made public by the Canarian Parliament this week. In addition, there are 33 spaces available to replace doctors on a temporary basis.

However, Rodrigo Martin, President of the Medical Association of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, said: “I have the impression that this data is incorrect.” Martin said they had found some speciality positions, such as otolaryngologists, who are not used on a full-time basis, so their jobs are

not registered as being available. Levy Cabrera, General Secretary of Tenerife’s Union of Doctors, who called the data “interesting”, added: “In Traumatology, in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and in primary care, there are many more vacancies.” According to the

SCS, Traumatology is the speciality with the most vacancies in the Canary Islands, followed by Gynaecology, Radiology and General Surgery. The SCS also revealed that it is struggling to fill the positions on the smaller islands, such as La Gomera and El Hierro.

Location wanted for energy plant TENERIFE has a longstanding commitment to renewable energies. Despite attempts in previous years - relying on wind or solar systems, among others the economic crisis and changing regulations has delayed the Island’s advance on the green path. For example, we still

trail the island of El Hierro, which is full of wind farms. But with the aim of reinvigorating this new energy line, the Cabildo is working on various aspects of clean-energy systems. One is the creation of a power plant, based on waterfalls and known as the Hydrological

Plan de Tenerife (PHT), which is being prepared by the Island Water Council. Miguel Becerra, Insular Director of Development, told the press this week that the Cabildo is looking at possible locations and models that best fit the Island’s characteristics, “We are studying this

matter, the Hydrological Plan, which is a series of proposals detailed with a model of desalinated water,” he said. “We are analysing it because we want to incorporate that energy system into the Island because, above all, it allows us greater profitability of renewable energy and resources.”

Government makes drugs problem a major priority

Cultural learning route for students SEVENTY students from the IES Adeje Secondary School took part in an inter-cultural visit to discover more about different peoples living peacefully, side by side, in their borough.

Adeje Council, via the Youth Department and in collaboration with the “Together in the Same Direction” col-

lective, took the youngsters on what was called an inter-cultural tourism route. Youth Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares said: “We are designing activities that continue to underline the importance of harmonious coexistence and respect for good practices as the fundamental pillars of our society, which recognises the importance of different cultures as tools for the evolution of better and more responsible citizens.” The programme comprised visits to various

cultural centres: one group to the Al- Ihsan Mosque, in the Calle Piedra Rodonda, and the other to San Eugenio’s Hindu temple. In each place, they were met by representatives of the relevant cultures, who explained a little bit about their beliefs, their role within the community and how they were integrating. The day closed with a meeting of the groups in the Avenida Palo Mayor, in El Galeón, where they shared their experiences and impressions of the trips.

THE acting Spanish Government has targeted drugaddicts and drugtaking dependency, within its 91.3m-euro distribution to finance various social programmes in all the regional areas excluding Navarre and the Basque Country, plus the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

Alfonso Alonso, acting Minister for Health, Social Services and Equality, revealed that 9.5m euros will be allocated to preventing drug dependency, within the framework of the current National Drug Strategy. It will also provide direct assistance for drug addicts, particularly those who are in prison, or have “problems with the justice system”. Alonso highlighted the work of the National

Drug Plan, which has reduced the consumption of drugs and alcohol between youngsters aged 14 to 18. “Over the last decade, the plan has achieved a 65% reduction in the consumption of cocaine, and more than 33% in the consumption of cannabis among secondary-school pupils,” he said. A further six million euros will go to help women and children who are victims of gender-based violence - a 25% increase on the 2015 sum allocated. In addition, 27.4m will be allocated to the Plan to Develop Basic Social Services Benefits - also known as the Concerted Plan - which supports the social policies of local authorities. That means the Gypsy Development Plan will receive 412, 500 euros. The Family and Childhood Support Plan will receive 48m to help fight child poverty and inequality. It will, hopefully, alleviate and improve the situation of families’

social vulnerability by attending to their basic needs - food, hygiene, clothes and services - as well as reconciling the work and home life of adults with children in their care. Alonso said the 2015 Survey on Living Conditions showed that the previous year was a turning point for poverty, which has been declining slowly. The AROPE indicator, which measures the risk of poverty and social exclusion, fell in 2014 from 29.2% the previous year to 28.6%. The percentage of households with little employment fell from 17.1% to 15.4%, and the percentage of households suffering from material deprivation fell from 7.1% to 6.4%. To reduce vulnerable situations in Spain, claimed the Minister for Health: “The key is to create jobs, and for economic development to filter down through people in work, together with the protective measures we have agreed.”

Recycling should include holidays

Imperial building legal rows demolished at last THE long-running saga over edificio Imperial has finally ended, after more than two decades of arguments and legal cases.

On 18th March 1994, the Imperial building, located in La Marina, Santa Cruz, collapsed and all the tenants had to be evicted. It was eventually demolished by the city council after declaring it to be “in ruins”. But that was only the beginning of what would become a long, drawn-out affair. After lengthy court battles, plus many challenges and appeals, the courts have issued their

last word. They have certified that the builders and architects must pay 800,000 euros to the former owners. Actually, it has been so long that the heirs of architects Felix Saenz Marrero and Francisco Ortiz Aznar will have to deal with the final bill. The Imperial was described by one wag as “a kind of Titanic of the chicharrera architecture”. The seven-floor building was built in 1974 in the heart of the city, and, from the very beginning, it was a little different. Some even said it was a structure with real character. But the truth is that its structure had significant deficiencies from the outset, and these

were aggravated over time. This week, the Supreme Court issued a judgement which ratifies a previous one by the Provincial Court of 2013. The Supreme Court agreed with the lower court’s rulings, which stated that the main causes of the collapse were the construction of an illegal attic, the poor quality of concrete used and failures in 344 of the 440 pillars. From the start, architects blamed what happened on “pillar 26” as it was labelled in legal papers. This had suffered failure days before the crash. It would be established that “pillar 26” would be a main reason, but not the sole reason,

for the collapse. In the Nineties, the property had deficiencies of all kinds, both in the horizontal structure as well as the vertical. Experts also certified that the poor quality of concrete used was causing real problems. All these ingredients led to the collapse, said the court. And each claimant will receive sums ranging from 6,000 to more than 100,000 euros. Over the years, there were attempts to rebuilt on the site, and it was even suggested that the Imperial name would remain. But the ongoing court action killed off any ideas. The current owners have confirmed they will auction off the land.

Red Cross new plea for families in need ANOTHER week and another call for help from the Red Cross.

The decline in food donations, and the high demand for basic aid, has left the Red Cross with virtually no reserve stock for needy families here in the South. The humanitarian organisation has been forced to make an almost-desperate appeal for help. And this

weekend, in collaboration with the HiperDino chain, there will

be a food drive to help the most needy families in Arona, Granadilla,

Arico, San Miguel and Vilaflor. José Luis Camisón, the region’s Red Cross co-ordinator, says the campaign will take place between Friday and Sunday in HiperDino stores in Las Chafiras, El Medano and Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos. Anyone who wants to contribute will find several volunteers with shopping carts in which they can deposit donated food.

RECYCLING and reducing natural waste have been life goals for many over the last few decades. But it seems that we forget this when we go on holiday. Influential hotel association Ashotel has revealed some worrying statistics, which show that people don’t care as much when they are away from their own nest. Ashotel manager Juan Pablo González told the “Tenerife More Sustainable Conference” this week that on our Island, each hotel bed produces 1.8kg of waste per day, compared with 1.6kg in residential homes. Yet fees paid by companies to municipalities are more than double the charges of homeowners. Apparently, it

works out at around 11% per kilogram for hoteliers, against the 5% charged for private homes. The issue, says Enrique Padron, Ashotel Director of Innovation and Development, is “very complex. We propose the same as other experts: ‘pay as you throw’.” At present, the rates for hotels and apartments are linked only to the number of people in the accommodation. There is no difference between what they pay, whether the property is full or half-empty - not even what they pay for those who generate little waste. Also, there is no incentive for people to make an effort to recycle or minimise waste.

Irish beauty dies after balcony fall AN Irish girl from County Cork, who couldn’t wait for a “summer of adventures and fun” in Tenerife, has fallen to her death from a hotel balcony.

Ramona Fagan was just two days in to her summer holiday last Wednesday when the tragedy occurred. Resort staff tried to revive the 21-year-old beauty, but to no avail. Tributes poured in for popular Ramona, who posted on Instagram before her “summer of fun” that she was “so excited, I could explode”. One heartbroken friend wrote on social media: “You never really know what’s around the corner. Such a sweet beautiful and genuine girl.” And a childhood friend said: “People need to know how much of a loving kind-hearted person you were. You were

the best friend to me for years. Been through so much together. “Don’t think we were never not laughing when we were together. Have the best memories of my life with ya, and I’m so glad I have had the pleasure to grow up with you.” Another friend added: “A gorgeous young girl with a contagious smile. Thinking of your family and big group of friends.” One pal said: “You will be FOREVER in my heart my Dear Ramona Fagan till we meet again R.I.P.” It is believed that Ramona, a former pupil of Mayfield Community School in Cork, who once trained as a beautician and worked in that sector, had planned to stay here for six weeks. The Department of Foreign Affairs contacted Cork police soon after the incident and is providing consular assistance to the family.

Vile pair crushed life out of piglets TWO heartless Spanish men, who are said to have crushed 79 piglets to death and shared a video of their vile deed on social media, could be facing a big bill for damages - and imprisonment!

The incident, which happened in January, took place on a pig farm in HuércalOvera, in the Andalucian province of Almería, and prosecutors are asking for jail sentences. The pair are also facing a request for 4,470 euros in damages to cover the farmer’s losses. The men, aged 19 and 22, who worked at the farm, were supposed to be transferring the seven-day-old animals to another unit for weaning. Instead, they trapped

the piglets inside the connecting passageway, closing off all escape routes. The teenager then began throwing himself on the animals, as though diving into a children’s sandpit, while the older man captured it on video with his cellphone. A total of 79 piglets died. The men were arrested by the Civil Guard and charged with animal abuse after one of them shared the video on Whatsapp. Prosecutors are seeking a one-year sentence for the teenager and 18 months for the older person. But under Spanish laws, defendants without a prior conviction, who receive sentences of under two years, are often exempt from going to prison, depending on the judge. The suspects are also facing a further penalty of 4,380 euros and a four-year ban on working with any animals, in any way.

Estrellas kids’ fine old song and dance CHILDREN from Estrellas Theatre School, aged from three to 18, wowed full houses at Showtime last weekend with their exceptional performances. The two evenings, fea-

turing local talent, saw more than 90 children displaying their talent for singing, acting and dancing on the stage. And their fantastic adaptation of Singing In The Rain, complete with pre-filmed sketches, screened in black and white, was put together cleverly by Keith Bisset, the school’s Acting teacher. A de-

lighted Maureen Sands, who owns Estrellas, said: “Every year, the kids always excel themselves when it comes to Showtime. And this year, they were better than ever. “With quick costume changes, and, at times 50 kids on the stage together, they acted like true professionals.” Their performances

were choreographed by teachers Amanda Scott and Tracey Cutting, who both recreated all the costumes, and Steve Towler was spot-on with the music. Alexia Luan played high-pitched star Lena Lamont to perfection, and the talking actors had their roles and American

accents off to a tee. Estrellas continues to grow, with the school now running on a Friday as well at Costa Adeje school. And new students, after performing for just one year, staged a brilliant production of Matilda. A brilliant evening was had by all, thanks to these wonderfully-

talented youngsters. And who could forget the “Estrellitas” who, as young as three years of age, melted everyone’s hearts with their confidence and giggles. For more information on Estrellas Theatre School, please contact Maureen Sands on:Mo@estrellastheatreschool.com

Valencia’s Cardinal is target for angry gays PROSECUTORS are investigating a Spanish cardinal for possibly encouraging a criminal act with remarks he made about the gay community.

Valencia’s provincial prosecutor’s office studied a recent speech made by Cardinal Antonio Canizares, in which he said “powers such as the gay empire” promoted the rise of movements against the Christian family. Cardinal Canizares, also the Archbishop of Valencia, hit out at feminists and gender ideology as well, and a regional LGBT group and 50 other groups filed complaint about the remarks. The Cardinal was said to have issued a letter of apology later, saying he had been misinterpreted. The prosecutors’ office has six months to decide whether the case merits legal attention the offence is punishable by up to three years

in prison. There has been no comment so far from the office of the Cardinal, who sparked a similar controversy last year when he criticised the influx of migrants and refugees into Europe. He later apologised for the remarks. The Cardinal, a key protégé of Benedict XVI, was removed from an important post in the Vatican’s liturgy office in 2014 and sent back to Spain by Pope Francis. The liturgy office regulates how Masses and other sacraments are celebrated, and, under Benedict XVI’s papacy, took on a more conservative and traditional bent.

Beware this balcony craze AN ongoing plea has been renewed by Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Travel Association (ABTA) for British holidaymakers in Spain and the Canaries to be aware of their hotel balconies, and use them safely.

It stems from the frightening “balconing” practice, which has been around for some years and involves people climbing from their own balcony to another, or leaping off one into the swimming pool below. This annual warning follows a number of related accidents, which have left several tourists fighting for

their lives in hospitals. In 2015 alone, three British people died after falling or jumping from balconies, and three more were seriously injured. And this was just a fraction of the total number of incidents, according to an ABTA statement. The Foreign Office has distributed posters and leaflets to popular tourist hotels, warning youngsters of the dangers as part of the campaign, now in its fifth year. Many cases of bal-

cony jumps and falls occur because youngsters are drunk, or high on alcohol and drugs, which can impair their judgement seriously. A 34-year-old holidaymaker, still in a critical condition after jumping from a balcony into a swimming pool last month, damaged his spinal cord severely. Will Middleton, FCO Consular Director for Southern Europe, said: “We have already seen a number of very serious injuries caused by balcony falls this summer. We really do urge people to avoid taking risks around balconies, particularly if they have been drinking. “A momentary lapse of judgement can lead to a lifetime of consequences. So think ‘balcony safety’, look out for friends and avoid doing anything that might cost a life.”

The FCO and ABTA have put together the following guidelines for tourists to follow while on holiday in Spain: *Never lean over, sit or climb on the balcony wall or railings *Don’t try to pass items to someone on another balcony *Don’t climb from one balcony to another *Never stand on balcony furniture *Never jump into the pool from your balcony *Take extra care on balconies after drinking alcohol as your judgement may be affected Spanish authorities have also attempted to clampdown on the lunatic craze in recent years. Hoteliers in the Balearic Islands have tried to make it more difficult for people to jump off balconies and, in some resorts, fines can be issued to those caught attempting to do so.

CW 14 Spain tough on asylum-seekers

www.canarianweekly.com

News

THE Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) has revealed that just 31% of asylumseekers’ requests examined in 2015 were accepted in Spain, which was a 13% drop from the previous year.

It means that Spain rejected seven out of every 10 requests that were accepted for consideration. And, by nationality, Spain received the most asylum requests from Syria, totalling 5,724 people. Increased controls at borders, and inaction when it comes to offering legal means to request international protection in Europe and Spain, has caused “a serious setback”. It has also put a human right such as asylum “in danger,” according to CEAR’s yearly report. In the case of Spain, which in 2015 registered 15,000 requests, the document reveals that just 3,240 were resolved, of which 31% (1,020) were granted. The EU average for granting such requests is 50%. The percentage has fallen, despite a rise in the volume of requests, outlines the report. In fact, Spain’s 15,000 registered last year was well up on the 6,000 seen the year before. “Spain has broken a scrawny record,” said CEAR general secretary Estrella Galán at the presentation of the report, “given that

it has received just 1% of the total requests in the EU, which come in at 1.3 million”. Countries such as Germany and Sweden have received 476,000 and 162,000 requests, respectively. By nationality, Spain has received most asylum requests from Syria, with 5,724 people last year. Next is Ukraine, with 3,440, and Palestine, with 809. Of the requests, 63% were from men, and 37% from women. And CEAR warns that European states are putting “impediments” in the way of refugees exercising their right to asylum. It is forcing them to seek routes which are more and more dangerous, among those the Mediterranean crossing, which is “the deadliest route in the world,” according to the NGO. Ms Galán said that one in every 27 people who tries to reach Europe via that sea route ends up dead - a rate that has risen over April and May to one in every 17. And CEAR, which estimates that 3,000 people have died so far in 2016 trying to make the crossing, added: “International agreements have been left to flounder in the Mediterranean.”

Drop in evictions EVICTIONS fell 16.3% in the Canaries in the first quarter of 2016 compared with the same period last year, according to the General Council of the Judiciary.

The total was 1,008 and, among these, 441 were the result of foreclosures (30.1% less) and 546 for breaching the Urban Lease Act

(-1.3%). In the whole of Spain, the number of evictions between 1st January and 31st March 2016 saw an 11.6% decline over the same period last year, from 18,869 to 16,688. The number of foreclosures fell in 14 of the 17 autonomous regions, and, especially in Cantabria, the Basque Country and Madrid, where the drop was over 20%. Evictions for nonpayment of rent experienced an annual decrease of 8.4%.

Services link up to solve a simulation emergency A SIMULATED exercise on Wednesday in La Caleta, dealing with a supposed, non-toxic, propane gas leak, earned praise from Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez for the excellent co-ordination of various services.

Rodríguez stressed that the actual possibility of such a risk was extremely small, but he said it was always better to be properly prepared. “We are very pleased at the level of co-ordination we have seen today,” he said. “The presence of gas is new to the region, and an event of this kind, though extremely remote, needs to be anticipated, with 14km of propane gas pipes (non-toxic) present. “We need to know how we would react in a risk situation, testing and verifying the measures in place, and improving them where we need to.” Shortly after 10.30am, fire brigade sirens were heard from a distance, rushing to deal with the 112 emergency call, which marked the start

of the exercise. Local Police were on hand to divert traffic away from the reported gas leak, the National Police were co-ordinating their response, the Civil Protection Unit advised members of the public, residents and tourists, and the Ambulance Service was on hand to attend to the only gas leak “victim”. Also present were members of CECOPAL, Adeje’s emergency coordination group, which oversees the borough’s risk situations. Visitors looked on in-

terestedly at the co-ordinated affair, and many were suitably impressed with the work of the services and the initiative itself. Adeje Council had posted notices - in Spanish and English - all over La Caleta, in advance of the exercise, to avoid unnecessary panic. The advanced preparation also included the co-operation of the H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel, which was directly in front of the supposed gas leak. It also played a full part

in ensuring its staff and guests were kept up to date on developments, with fire-fighters in and near the hotel grounds during the simulation. All the other La Caleta hotels were also fullysupportive of the initiative. The so-called “emergency” was caused by a digger, inadvertently rupturing a DISA gas suppliers’ distribution pipe. Its spokesperson, Francisco Plato, who was present, said: “We are talking about a situation that is highly unlikely. “But it has been a very useful exercise in testing the lines of communication and co-ordination between the different teams, which would be called into service during an emergency situation of this kind.”

A WEATHER warning is in place for high temperatures over the next few days in the Canary Islands and in several provinces throughout mainland Spain.

As the map shows, there is a yellow alert

in Las Palmas, capital of Gran Canaria, as well as in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. And temperatures could reach 94F in the South of Tenerife today (Friday). The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) also predicts the Canaries will experience its first genuine calima of the year. This will mainly affect the South of Gran

Canaria, together with and Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. It will also hit South Tenerife, but the calima will not be as fierce as in the eastern Canary Islands. In the whole of Spain, a total of nine provinces have been put at risk for high temperatures, which could reach 99F. There will also be heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Refugees boiling over! THE number of refugees, asylumseekers and forcibly- displaced people reached a mind-boggling 65.3 million by the end of 2015, according to a new report.

It is the highest-ever recorded level, and means that one person in every 113 worldwide is now forcibly displaced. And the United Nation’s refugee agency stresses that conflict, persecution and a lack of political solutions has caused this steep rise. It is the first time the 60-million threshold has ever been crossed, which adds up to more people who have been forced to flee their homes than the entire UK population. Filippo Grandi, UN high commissioner for refugees, said: “I hope that this message reaches the

leaderships: We need action, political action, to stop conflicts. The message they have carried is, ‘If you don’t solve problems, problems will come to you’.” Just over 50% of 2015 refugees were children, with 98,400 asylum requests coming from youngsters who had been separated from their parents, or were travelling unaccompanied. The UNHCR recorded 3.2m people in industrialised countries awaiting asylum decisions, 21.3m refugees worldwide and 40.8m people who were displaced in their country of origin. Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia accounted for more than half of the world’s refugees, with displacement figures rising 50% since 2011, when the Syrian conflict began. The year 2014 had already seen the highest number of displaced people, but that was topped by nearly 10%,

according to the new Global Trends Report, released to mark World Refugee Day. Turkey took in the most people, with 2.5m people hosted in the country - nearly all from neighbouring Syria. Afghan neighbour Pakistan took in 1.6m refugees, while Lebanon - also next to Syria - hosted 1.1m. More than a million people fled to Europe in 2015, with Germany receiving the highest number of asylum requests, 441,900, increasing its refugee population by 46% from 2014. The refugee agency has called on European leaders to do more to end the conflicts which have forced people from their homelands. And the UN’s Filippo Grandi said: “There is no plan B for Europe in the long run. “Europe will continue to receive people seeking asylum. Their numbers may vary ... but it is inevitable.”

Devastating toll of death

A JAGUAR has been shot dead by a soldier, shortly after being used in an Olympic torch relay in the Brazilian city of Manaus.

Most of them had been working on farms during torrential rains on Tuesday: 53 died in Bihar, 10 in the eastern state of Jharkhand and at

jaguar killed

The magnificent, female beast escaped its handlers after Monday’s ceremony and attacked a soldier, said an Army spokesman. Four tranquilliser darts failed to stop it, so a soldier shot it with a pistol. But Rio Games’ organisers admitted it had been a mistake to exhibit the Olympic torch next to a chained wild animal.

Animal-behaviour scientist Joao Paulo, from the Castro University of Brasilia, told BBC Brasil that the animal probably escaped because it became stressed during the relay. “It’s neither healthy nor advisable to subject an animal to such a situation, with lots of noise and people,” he said. “Often, jaguars are already stressed by being kept in captivity, and that’s compounded when they’re exposed

to hubbub.” Animalrights groups have condemned the killing, with some questioning why the animal was even involved in the Olympic event. Brittany Peet, director of captive animal law enforcement at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), said in a statement: “When will we learn? Wild animals held captive and forced to do things that are frightening, sometimes painful, and al-

ways unnatural, are ticking time-bombs.” The animal, called Juma, was being kept at a zoo attached to a jungle training camp for the military. It was rescued as a cub by soldiers after its mother died in the jungle and was brought up at the camp. Jaguars seized from hunters are sometimes kept as mascots by jungle battalions and shown at military parades. An investigation into the jaguar’s death will now be carried out by the military. The Olympic torch is relayed through Brazil, leading up to the opening ceremony in August.

Civil Rights trio murders: Case closed after 52 years THE investigation into the deaths of three Civil Rights workers, who disappeared 52 years ago in Mississippi, has finally been closed - without a conclusion!

The 1964 murders of James Earl Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner in Neshoba County sparked national outrage. They also helped bring in the Civil Rights Act. The case, one of more than 125 which remain unsolved from the Civil Rights era, later became the subject of Oscar-winning film Mississippi Burning. Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said: “The decision closes a chapter in the state’s divisive Civil Rights history. “The evidence has been degraded by memory over time, so there are no individuals living now that we can make a case on at this point.” But he pledged that if new information came

forward as a result of the case-closed announcement, prosecutors could reconsider and pursue a new investigation. Hood presented the FBI’s 48-page report, which revealed that the authorities concluded the three men were killed as part of a Ku Klux Klan conspiracy. Mr Chaney, Mr Goodman and Mr Schwerner, all in their twenties, had been working to register AfricanAmerican voters. They disappeared on 21st June, 1964, while investigating the burning of a black church. Their bodies were found weeks later under the thick red clay of an earthen dam, near Philadelphia, Mis-

sissippi. In 1967, eight people were convicted of federal Civil Rights violations related to their deaths. And in 2005, three manslaughter convictions were made against white supremacist Edgar Ray Killen, who remains in prison after being convicted of manslaughter in 2005. On Monday, relatives of the three murdered men said the focus should be on all people killed or hurt while seeking justice. Reverend Julia Chaney Moss, sister of Mr Chaney, said: “The Civil Rights period was not about just those three young men. It was about all of the lives.” The FBI re-examined the 125 cases af-

ter launching its Cold Case Initiative in 2006. Congress set aside millions of dollars in 2007 under the “Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act” for the investigations, but most of the cases have not resulted in a prosecution. Among them was the 1964 killing of the black owner of a shoe shop in Ferriday, Louisiana. No one was prosecuted, despite news articles linking a Rayville man to the crime. And in 2011, the Justice Department closed an investigation into the 1965 killing of a man in Pelahatchie, Mississippi, who was shot by a constable. Witnesses questioned the officer’s version of events.

Russian All hail Golden Virginia boating disaster A PLEASURE boat company defied several storm warnings about taking a large party of holidaymakers on a lake trip in Russia, resulting in the tragic deaths of 14 children from Moscow.

Most of the 37 survivors aboard the craft on Lake Syamozero, in northern Russia’s Karelia region, reached an island in the lake, while others were found in a village, some of them washed ashore. Regional MP Alexei Gavrilov is reported to have told state TV channel Rossiya 24 that there had been repeated warnings in the days before the storm, advising against any boating on the lake. “They didn’t have the right to go out boating,” he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency. Four people have been arrested on suspicion of safety violations. “A great tragedy has occurred in Karelia,” tweeted the town mayor. “My condolences to their families and friends.” Rescue services received an alert at 11.15am on Sunday that a tour group of

47 children and four adults were missing on Lake Syamozero after a storm. Emergency crews, using boats and helicopters, were deployed to the scene. On Sunday evening, investigators announced that all the victims were children. The party, mostly aged 12 to 15, were staying in a summer camp near the lake, which is a popular, tourism spot. Around 51 people were in the party, who had set out in boats on Saturday, when the storm took hold. One of the survivors, 12-year-old Yulia, raised the alarm after reaching a local village on Sunday, a police source told Russian tabloid Life News. Yulia told the newspaper that the group were using two boats and a raft when the storm began, and that the craft were scattered across the lake. She was washed ashore and recovered consciousness on Sunday, after which she walked along the shore to the village of Kudama. Along the way she met a boy survivor, who was covered in blood and could not move. After taking note of the spot where she had found him, she reached the village, where a local resident phoned emergency services.

ROME has elected its first female mayor, Virginia Raggi - an anti-establishment candidate - since its beginnings, nearly 3,000 years ago.

Ms Raggi, who entered politics just five years ago, won 67.2% of the vote, flattening Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s candidate in the two-person run-off. During the campaign she capitalised on strong public anger over corruption, and the deterioration of the city’s public services. Her success marked a significant breakthrough for her populist Five-Star Movement party, which was founded by outspoken comedian Beppe Grillo seven years ago. The party had previously controlled a handful of towns only, but analysts say it has outgrown its image as a protest party. The victory comes after dozens of people in the Italian capital, including local politicians from mainstream parties, were implicated in corruption probes over city contracts. An expenses scandal last year forced the res-

ignation of a centre-left mayor, months after it was revealed that the city had been haemorrhaging cash to organised crime. Beppe Grillo has started to relinquish his role at the head of FiveStar, whose proposals include tougher penalties on tax evasion and white-collar crime, and introducing universal income support. The governing Democratic Party suffered a second blow in Turin, where its veteran, incumbent mayor was defeated by another FiveStar candidate.

Renzi insists he will not resign, regardless of the local election results. But he could face further embarrassment over Ms Raggi’s opposition to Rome’s bid to host the 2024 Olympics. He has campaigned for the city to host the event, but the new mayor has warned that preparation for the Olympics risks inviting further corruption in pay-offs and kickbacks. Mayoress Raggi, a 37-year-old lawyer, is part of a new generation of Five-Star leaders, who have emerged with

growing public profiles as Mr Grillo has retreated from front-line politics. They are being taken increasingly seriously after repeated banking scandals under the Renzi’s tenure, coinciding with economic stagnation. The Mayoress has pledged the start of a “new era” of transparency and legality, saying her victory was a win for the citizens of Rome. But critics say she will face a tough challenge to run the near-bankrupt city, given her lack of experience.

Chekov star checks out ANTON Yelchin, the Star Trek actor, died in a freak car accident at his Los Angeles home in the early hours of Sunday.

Yelchin, 27, best known for playing starship navigator Pavel Chekov in the reboot of the film franchise, was trapped between his own car and a brick postbox at his home, said police. He also appears in the sequels Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond, set for release next month. Yelchin was discovered after concerned friends visited his home because he had failed to attend a rehearsal hours earlier. Police spokesperson Jenny Hauser said: “It was the result of the victim’s own car rolling

backwards down his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick mailbox pillar and security fence. “The victim was on his way to meet his friends for rehearsal. And when he didn’t show up, his friends went to his house, where they found him, deceased, by his car. “It appeared that he had momentarily exited his car, leaving it in the driveway.”

Paramount Pictures, which makes Star Trek, said in a statement: “All of us at Paramount join the world in mourning the untimely passing of Anton Yelchin. “As a member of the Star Trek family, he was beloved by so many, and he will missed by all. We share our deepest condolences with his mother, father and family.” Actor John Cho, who

plays Sulu in the new Star Trek films, said: “I loved Anton Yelchin so much. He was a true artist - curious, beautiful, courageous. He was a great pal and a great son. I’m in ruins.” Yelchin, an only child, was born in Russia and moved to the US as a baby with his parents, who were professional figure-skaters. He began his acting career when he was just nine, and, as a teenager, appeared alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins in Hearts In Atlantis (2001) and Robin Williams in House Of D (2004). Yelchin also had roles in the Steven Spielberg miniseries Taken, as well as the films Terminator Salvation, Charlie Bartlett, Fright Night, Like Crazy and Only Lovers Left Alive.

Brexit and the consequences

TODAY at some stage we will discover the intentions of the British people.

The smart money suggest that the ‘Remain’ camp will win. But what are the consequences if the referendum vote in the UK is to leave the EU? Actually, from a legal point of view, nothing would happen. European legislation does not provide for a referendum result to have any executive effect. In fact, this would have an advisory outcome rather than a mandatory one. In other words, it would be a political matter but not a legal one. The UK government can either ignore the

referendum result when it is revealed today (Friday), or consider it as a matter to be studied within the Parliament. Eventually, David Cameron’s Tory party could even ask for another referendum if the Brexit supporters succeed. What really matters in law is when and why the government of a EU member State invokes

Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. Once the proceedings of this article begin, the “exit” (or Brexit in this case) becomes a legal matter. This process seems to be irrevocable after starting, which is the idea of the Treaty. In summary, Article 50 states: 1. Any Member State may decide to withdraw from the EU in ac-

cordance with its own constitutional requirements. 2. A Member State which decides to withdraw shall notify the European Council of its intention. The EU will negotiate with the member State and conclude any agreement, setting out the arrangements for its withdrawal. The agreement is to be concluded by the Council after the consent of European Parliament. 3. The Treaties shall cease to apply to the State in question from the date of entry into force of the withdrawal agreement, or two years after the notification. The European Council, in agreement with the member State, can decide, unanimously, to extend this period. According to the spe-

cialists, there are three points of interest in respect of an EU withdrawal by the UK: Firstly, it is a matter for a member State’s “own constitutional requirements” as to how it decides to withdraw (referendum, parliament approval). So the way to do it is not regulated. In the UK it would be a parliamentary approval, although the matter is not fully clear. Secondly, notification by the member state under Article 50 is the moment the formal process begins. It is then intended to be effected by negotiation and agreement. There is no express provision for a member State to withdraw from the process, or revoke the notification. Once the notification is granted, the

Brit who wanted to shoot Trump A BRITISH man, who tried to grab a police officer’s gun at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas, said he wanted to shoot the US presidential candidate.

Michael Steven Sandford, 20, reportedly from Dorking, Surrey, did not enter a plea when he appeared before a judge in Nevada. He was remanded in custody until a 5th July hearing after being charged with an act of violence in a restricted area. It it is believed that he tried to seize the gun after saying he wanted Trump’s autograph at Saturday’s rally. He said he had been planning to try to shoot Trump for about a year, and had decided to act then because he finally felt confident enough to do so.

19 CW

Mr Sandford, said to have Asperger’s syndrome, had originally travelled to the US to see a girlfriend, but he had overstayed his visa and was living in a car. The main syndrome affecting Asperger’s sufferers is that they have significant trouble with social situations. His parents, who parted when he was four, say they had pleaded with US Embassy officials to help bring their “vulnerable” son home before the incident. But a federal judge, who found Mr Sand-

ford to be a danger - he appeared in leg-irons - with a risk of non-appearance, ordered him to be detained, pending his preliminary hearing. His father, Michael Davey, said: “He’s never been very good at communicating. He’s never been interested in politics and never really been interested in much “Because of his condition, he never talks about his private life and it has always had quite an impact on how he behaves. He left school when he was 15 because he couldn’t

cope with it all so he’s got no qualifications or job experience.” A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are providing assistance following an arrest of a British national in Las Vegas.” The US presidential election 2016 campaign has been fringed with violence because Trump attracts protests nearly everywhere his campaign takes him. The tycoon often mocks demonstrators, and there have been clashes with his supporters, both inside and outside of his packed, emotionally- charged rallies. That is why the Secret Service, which guards candidates as well as presidents, has been on high alert. In March, Ohio agents swarmed around Trump after a man apparently attempted to climb on to the stage where he was speaking. Other events have been

cancelled because of security concerns and, with five months to go, many Americans are worried about where this election is heading. According to the court papers, Mr Sandford went to a Las Vegas shooting range the previous day to learn how to fire a gun because he’d never done so. Then, during the rally, he allegedly tried to grab the officer’s weapon because it was in an unlocked position and therefore, he said, the easiest way to get a gun to shoot Trump. Court documents say Mr Sandford acknowledged he knew he would only be able to fire one or two rounds, and expected to be killed during an attempt on Mr Trump’s life. He told police that if he’d not tried to kill Trump this time, he’d have tried again at a rally in Phoenix today (Friday), for which he had already booked tickets.

State and the EU are stuck with it. Thirdly, there is a twoyear deadline, which is what gives real force to Article 50. After notification, the member state would be out in two years, unless this period were to be extended by unanimous agreement. But a vote for Brexit will not determine the outcome. Whether Britain leaves the EU will depend on a political decision, to follow the provisions of Article 50. So, irrespective of the referendum result, the UK will still be a member State of the EU the day after the vote. Rally crash injures six AT least two spectators were left in a critical condition after a car in a motor rally they were watching veered out of control and smashed into the crowd. A total of six people, including the driver, were injured in the crash. It happened in Mallorca during Saturday’s Rallysprint Aficio de Calvia, the driver failing to round a hairpin bend and crashing sideways into some of those watching. Sources said a safety officer had earlier told spectators not to stand on the corner where the crash occurred, but they returned to the spot once he had left. An 18-year-old youngster is in intensive care in Palma’s Son Espases hospital with injuries to his spinal cord. A 39-year-old man, who suffered a broken tibia and fibula, is being treated at an ICU unit in the Juaneda Clinic, also in Palma. A 60-year-old man who had a foot amputated, was stable after being treated in Son Espases, and a fourth person was recovering from severe chest injuries in the Rotger Clinic.

Grand Designs More 4, 20:00

Boat-loving James Strangeways has spent the last 35 years travelling the canals and waterways of Britain. He’s never stayed in one place for more than a few days and he’s never liked houses. Realising it’s time to put down some roots on dry land, he commissions his nephew, architect Ben Hebblethwaite, to build him a home that’s as unhouselike as possible for a tight budget of £300k. To lure his boat-mad client into a more settled life, Ben designs a house with ship-like qualities. It floats above the marsh on stilts, clad in acres of timber and topped with a roof that looks like the giant keel of a sailing vessel. But it’s the first time Ben has ever built a house from scratch and things take a dramatic turn for the worse when, just a few months into the project, the contractor goes into liquidation with £87k of their money. And as the house starts to take shape, James decides to tweak the design in ways that set alarm bells ringing for his young architect.

Messages Home: Lost Films of the British Army Channel 4, 20:00

Recently rediscovered World War II footage reveals British soldiers in Burma recording filmed messages to their loved ones back home. These extraordinary films reveal stories including a lovelorn gunner yearning for his sweetheart, a father speaking to a daughter he’d never met, a decorated war hero traumatised by the lives he took and a special operations ‘Chindit’ who saw action behind enemy lines but told his family he was a ‘cabbage mechanic’ in the catering corps. The heart-warming films were found in old film canisters in a Manchester Town Hall basement and offer a glimpse into the lives of these courageous servicemen as they endured long periods of separation from their homes while serving in Asia

The Great British Sewing Bee

24th June - 30th June 2016

M onday

BBC2, 21:30

Puzzling Patterns and Pattern Cutting. Claudia Winkleman hosts the semi-final of the Great British Sewing Bee, where just four sewers are left to battle it out to for a place in the final. For the pattern challenge, the sewers are tasked with making an asymmetric yoked skirt inspired by modern Japanese pattern cutting. This brain-teasing pattern requires the sewers to stitch one of the most technically difficult and curved seams ever seen in the sewing room. Next, it is the alteration challenge and the sewers are asked to transform a duvet cover into a female garment. It is a no-waste challenge so every scrap of fabric needs to be used by draping and sculpting it around the mannequin. How will the sewers cope with this radical approach to creating clothes? For their made to measure challenge, their ability to draft and create patterns is put to the test as the judges seek to draw out the sewers’ inner designer. Who will flourish and who will fail to make the grade so tantalisingly close to that place in the grand final?

Dispatches: Are You Owed a Pay Rise? Channel 4, 20:00 Dispatches investigates the impact of the National Living Wage. Introduced earlier this year, it was supposed to mean a pay increase for some of Britain’s poorest workers, but is everyone really getting richer? Morland Sanders meets the staff who have been threatened with the sack if they don’t sign new contracts which would make them poorer. Dispatches finds some of Britain’s biggest companies cutting perks and privileges and goes undercover to investigate the businesses offering wages far lower than the new £7.20 an hour minimum.

The Real Story Channel 4, 20:30 Kate Quilton returns for a new series investigating the purported health benefits of superfoods. Superfoods seem to be everywhere - not a day goes by without a ‘superfood’ story hitting the headlines. Backing up these eye-grabbing stories are thousands of studies devoted to connecting the humblest of ingredients to the grandest of claims. But just what can we believe? Kate investigates the real science behind the supposed health benefits and reveals which foods truly deserve the title - super. In the first episode of the second series, Kate visits Naples to investigate the potential cancer-busting properties of the humble tomato; she travels to Japan, to find out if the secret of youth is a fermented soybean; and also discovers if a glass of red wine can really help the grey matter.

The Living And The Dead

24th June - 30th June 2016

T uesday

BBC 1, 21.00

Somerset 1894. When a pioneering Victorian psychologist brings his vivacious young wife to live on his family’s estate, he is confronted by one disturbing case after another. Are these strange events linked merely by coincidence, or is there something more sinister - more supernatural - going on at Shepzoy? When the death of his mother brings Nathan Appleby (Colin Morgan) and his vivacious young wife Charlotte (Charlotte Spencer) back to the family estate, they must turn the farm’s fortunes around - or risk ruin and the devastation of the local community. Though the farm and its future demand their attention, when a vulnerable teenage girl is brought to Nathan, seemingly possessed by a terrifying spirit, he cannot leave her to suffer. A pioneering doctor, Nathan has worked at the forefront of the emerging science of psychology and is an expert in mapping the dark places of the mind. He believes there is always a rational or scientific explanation to be found for life’s mysteries; though Harriet’s case is disturbing, he must use every psychological technique he has to find a way to cure her, to free her from this terrible burden. But what if Nathan is wrong, and it isn’t an illness of the mind? Could Harriet actually be haunted?

Life Inside Jail: Hell On Earth ITV1, 21.00

Located 150 miles north of Manhattan, Albany County Jail sees petty thieves mix with hardened gangsters, drug addicts and multiple murderers while they wait for their cases to go to court. Conditions are seriously tough – even though, in the eyes of the law, the inmates are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Headed up by Sheriff Craig Apple and his team of 240 dedicated Correctional Officers, the jail accommodates over a thousand men and women across 22 different housing units. While the average stay in Albany is just 42 days – those accused of the most serious crimes can expect to be there for a year or more. In Albany, you are more than twice as likely to be a victim of violent crime compared to New York City. The Hudson River, running through the city marks out rival gang territory, and law enforcement face ongoing battles against the ruthless gang members from the opposing Bloods and Crips taking shots at each other to secure their drug trade. America is currently suffering a heroin epidemic. From addicts stealing or prostituting themselves to fund their habit to the gun-toting gang-bangers plaguing the city’s streets with shootings, murder and mayhem – many of those in custody at Albany are there for drug related crimes. Once inside jail, inmates are categorized according to their level of risk. Level One inmates are non-violent and may be in for petty crimes: Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), drug possession, failure to pay a fine… one inmate was facing a week behind bars for stealing a frozen chicken, another for the theft of a shopping trolley.

Love Your Garden ITV1, 20.00

Alan and the team head to Hull to makeover the garden of a 90-year-old Land Girl and Ballroom dancing devotee. Age and frailty have seen the twice-widowed great-grandmother lose the ability to tend her once beautiful front and back gardens – so they have become neglected sad no-go areas. After Alan surprises her at an over 80’s Tea Dance at the Darby and Joan, the team cleverly transform her front and back gardens into spaces she can safely garden again. They create two colourful and nostalgic havens full of thoughtful memories and even an outdoor ballroom where she enjoys a waltz with Alan. The Love Your Garden Team: Katie Rushworth, Alan Titchmarsh, Francis Tophill and David Domoney

CCTV: Neighbourhood Watching ITV1, 21.00

Britain is the CCTV capital of the world, with an estimated 6 million cameras monitoring our every move. And increasingly, it’s ordinary homeowners keeping watch on our streets. As the cost of private camera systems has fallen to as little as £100, today there’s a new army of CCTV owners capturing footage 24/7. This documentary explores the rise in British domestic CCTV use through the extraordinary footage captured by home surveillance cameras, and the dramatic, funny and bizarre stories of those behind – and in front of – the lens. From mysterious acts of car vandalism in a picturesque village, to a decade-long neighbourhood dispute, and an outrageous garden robbery, this entertaining film explores the growing impact of domestic CCTV on our lives.

Sue Barker presents live coverage of day four of Wimbledon 2016. It is second-round day at the All England Club and this time in 2015, home fans had a double celebration with both Andy Murray and James Ward victorious. BBC1, 21.00

ITV2, 22.00

The SFO have been tipped off that government minister Charles Matherson has greenlit the construction of three controversial skyscrapers, for which his wife’s family has supplied the high-quality stone. Stefan offers to get close to Matherson and goes undercover as his driver. Across London, at the building site of one skyscraper, Rash and Sands investigate the death of a labourer called Adam. While the foreman insists that Adam’s death was accidental, Rash isn’t so sure. The pair interview Adam’s flatmate Karen, and learn that he recently came into some money. Rash later discovers that Adam visited someone called Gulliver just before his death, whom he traces to a reclamation yard. Rash, who is unaware that he’s under surveillance in relation to the theft of public artworks, is volunteered by Heywood to cover the midnight observation post. Before he starts his shift Rash takes Stefan and Karen to a nightclub, hoping to discover more about Adam, and they accidentally get very drunk. When Stefan promises to help Rash stay awake at his observation post, disaster is not far away. Stefan is played by Mark Strepan, Rash by Ben Tavassoli, Sands by Mark Addy, Charles Matheson by Alistair Petrie, Raymond by Stephen Lord and Karen by Joan Iyiola.

Rick Edwards hosts the brand new series of the outrageously competitive panel show that pushes celebrities to their limits. The only thing that can save them is to use their Safeword to make it all stop. Tonight, The Wanted’s Tom Parker goes head to head with Strictly Come Dancing’s James Jordan as they have their social media accounts hijacked and their professional lives poked by team captains Katherine Ryan and David Morgan, alongside comics Matt Richardson and Jamali Maddix.

Karting? Even toddlers are given a mini-chance

By Vanessa Vee THE local Karting track, the large one between Los Cristianos and the airport, is always a major sight, and, I would guess, a huge talking point for new arrivals on the transfer buses from their planes.

The track is a wellknown landmark because of its size, and it definitely stands out! And there is an array of activities in which to participate once you’re there. The Karting Club, for a start, offers a free pickup and drop-off from the South resorts, which is always a bonus, and staff always try to find a convenient time and pick-up point to suit. On arrival, hand over your pre-paid tickets, or, alternatively, you can make your own way there. There is plenty of free car-parking, and you

may purchase entrance tickets on the door. The track is ideal for all ages, with vehicles to suit everyone - even the toddlers. Yes, those aged 3-5 can even sit alongside an adult and race on a purpose-built mini-track. To see the joy and excitement on the kids’ faces is a real treat. For the 6-9 age group, they have an opportunity to manoeuvre their very own 120cc vehicle around the junior track. Next step is for ages 1014, who drive a slightly

larger kart, namely a 180cc. The concentration levels on their faces is sooooo cute! You can sense their imagination of actually being a participant in a huge Formula 1 race! The teenagers, 15-17, can join the senior track,

on a kart named the 200cc “Cadete Senior”, and the 18-year-olds and over (no upper-age limit, I might add) are offered the brand new Kart RT8. With a 400cc, 14 horsepower 4-stroke engine, vast speeds can be reached while winding in

and out, and around and around, the race track. Why not make an event out of your day at the track? Whether teambuilding, a company bash, stag (or hen) parties or celebrating your birthday, you can book your own group Grand Prix! Mini Prix, Grand Prix or Super Grand Prix … there are different packages, all including 10 laps minimum. Dependent on the package, you could even be receiving your very own trophy and a

bottle of bubbly to spray, as well as winners’ diplomas. Lunch can also be served, if required, and all can be viewed from the panoramic terrace. And you can see your times displayed on the large, flashing board. There is a minimum number of people required for these organised events, though, so please contact the numbers of addresses below for further information. For the 18s and under,, why not let the Karting Club host a memorable birthday party for you, in which you will have your own priority section to celebrate with your friends. For more information about the Karting Club, or reservations, please call 922 751 867, or email info@tenerifesunshine. com Alternatively, either book this or other Tenerife excursions on the website www.tenerifesunshine.com, or visit the Tenerife Sunshine Travel Centre, located on Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos.

Fans flying the flag By Emma at Motorworld

WITH Euro 2016 well under way, it is obvious that football fans will want to support their country wherever they are.

But can you fly a flag on a car legally while driving? The short answer is Yes, but certain criteria apply because it must not pose a danger to the driver or other road-users. Say you’re a Brit and live in Tenerife, or you are on holiday here, and you want to display an England Flag. The law does not state that it is illegal to display flag of a particular country or team, but you could face a fine

if you do not comply with the relevant regulations. This is where the law becomes a little strange. Article 14 of the Reglamento Circulacion deals with the distribution of loads, under the head-

ing “Disposición de la carga”. A load is considered as anything which is an addition to the vehicle’s normal features. In effect, as a safety measure, anything carried on a vehicle must

not drag fully or partially, fall or move dangerously, interfere with the vehicle stability, produce noise, dust or other problems that can be avoided. And, of course, it must not mask the lighting

and turning signals, number plates or anything else which may interfere with the driver’s manual warnings. Yet a flag, when placed on the outside of a car, will drag, even if minimally, when the vehicle is moving. Many footie fans will want to display large flags. but these will cause a considerable drag, and may also interfere with the driver’s view, as well as lights, potentially, occasionally number plates or other fixtures, which are designed for motorists’ safety. There is also a risk that a large flag might be dislodged and fall into the path of other road-users or pedestrians. They could also become entangled with another vehicle - again, a safety hazard. So, quite clearly, large flags are not allowed. However, smaller, purposebuilt flags are allowed.

These are of a permitted size for vehicles, and they’re often sold in caraccessory shops or outlets in England. All sorts of accessories are permitted, such as covers for wing mirrors displaying a flag, provided they do not obscure the mirror. However a large flag spread across a bonnet is not permitted; nor is a flag draped over the sun visor. As you’d expect, there are some exceptions to this rule: where a road is closed to normal traffic or there’s an organised parade, for example. A larger flag is then permitted because these displays are normally controlled by the police. Don’t forget, there are no “approved sizes” of flags under this law. Any signs of patriotism must not pose a potential hazard, and, if you do not adhere to this law, you could face a hefty fine.

Food review: Manhattan’s, Los Cristianos

The big, tasty challenge MANHATTAN’S is a bar-restaurant that lives up to its name: sometimes you want a light, easy-going meal. Maybe just a slice of toast with some coffee, a little salad with a glass of wine, or a bit of fish with something that bubbles.

You can have that in Manhattan’s, but you can also have a feed. Even the name suggests what is in store. If you have been to Manhattan in New York, then you already know that everything is big. And value for money is not just a saying - it’s a way of life! I wonder if that was in the owners’ mind when they opened up in Los

Cristianos? This week, I was able to enjoy a rare day-time visit and, at 1pm in Tenerife, you catch more than one crowd. On the table opposite, two holiday-mak-

ers were tucking into a huge breakfast … it had the lot. You know, sometimes you can look at someone in a restaurant and you just know they are not

going to finish the meal? This was one of those occasions. There are not many places here in the South which will give you a big hearty breakfast - guys,

you know what I’m talking about here - but Manhattan’s do. The trouble was, for my stomach it was lunchtime and the breakfast would have to wait for another day. In Manhattan’s, the

menu is the same at 12.30pm as it is at 9.30pm. There is plenty of choice, and more than enough variety to please everyone. A few tables away from us, a couple of lads were tucking into the combi-

Wine and Dine

24th June - 30th June 2016 nation platter. This was a real feast and, at less than 13 euros, a real bargain. And, as I was to discover swiftly, this applies for all the dishes. For a starter, I went with the BBQ chicken wings and my partner the garlic prawns on garlic bread. I don’t want to go all Peter Kay on you, but it’s the future. I’ve enjoyed a seabed of garlic prawns in my life and loaves of garlic bread. But never as a combination. The north Atlantic prawns were cooked just so. It’s easy to overdo them and get served a starchy dry prawn. Not here. The garlic is there, but not overpowering, and the sauce is buttery, which works well with the toasted bread. As for the BBQ wings, well, it all comes down to the sauce! These had that nice, vinegary twang. The smoky sensation teases the taste buds, while the vinegar

cuts through to leave that lip-smacking aftertaste. The starters were impressive, but the big winner was still to come. I mentioned at the top that big is a keyword here and that is cemented with the main courses. My partner had the ribs, wedges and coleslaw option. The second it arrived, I knew that she would need some help! There was a mountain of wedges, a fine side of coleslaw (which wasn’t sunk in a sea of mayo. Perfect!), and four ribs,

which could easily have come from Wilma Flintstone’s kitchen. When it comes to ribs, size is everything. Well, to a degree. I have already covered the sauce and the ribs themselves? Let’s say there is a wellknown rib chain which could learn a few things from the Manhattan’s ribs. It’s a cliché to say the meat fell off the bone. Cliché away, because that is the truth. The right amount of meat, with the little layer of fat which gives the rib meat

that fine taste. They were superb. And Yes, my partner managed just two of them. I kept it simple, with a classic surf and turf. Again, the portions were amazing. Some critics say you should keep the customer wanting more. However, sometimes you want a real munch - and this is what I had! A lovely size, perfectly-

cooked, well-seasoned, medium-rare sirloin steak with a fresh sidesalad. And a portion of chips which was bigger than what I had in the chippie the night before. And this was before I somehow stole a rib off the other plate. You know you have had a filling lunch when your stomach has already emailed the brain to say

41 CW

it was taking the evening off. The bill was another big surprise. With a couple of coffees, a Coke and a water, it was less per head than the price of a decent bottle of wine. Finally I must point out the spotless nature of the toilets. It’s something they are big on in Manhattan. And there’s that word again. Big!

TONING DOWN THE DAMAGE... By Carl Pattison

By Val Sainsbury

AS the temperatures soar, it’s not only your skin that can suffer. Even if you only walk around in the sun, your hair can be fried, and lose so much of its colour.

THE famous blue pill used to treat male impotence, otherwise known as sex-drug Viagra, could also have the power to prevent heart failure and heart attacks.

In just a few hours, your hair will lighten, maybe by a shade. Constant sun damage can strip out colour by three or four shades - even more, in some cases. So what can you do if your hair has faded? If it’s blonde, on your next root touch-up you can run the colour through to the ends for a few moments, to refresh the colour. If the sun has had a severe effect, adding some warmer tones will give your hair a more natural look, and add shine if it’s dried out. If your hair is a richer tone, adding a slightlydarker shade to the middle lengths and ends for 10 minutes will

even things out, and help prevent the colour from fading. Reds are the worst for colour fade, and running-through the colour constantly will only create more fade in the future. Prevention is always better than cure, and covering the hair if you are sunbathing is the only answer. There’s nothing worse than seeing an overlybleached-out blonde. The hair will look dry, and never natural.

Instead, weave in some honey tones - or caramels - to even out the blonde, and give yourself that beachbabe look. Don’t leave it until the end of the summer to do something. It may be too late to rescue that precious colour. Asking your stylist about how to prevent, or solve, this problem, is the only answer. He or she will mix-up your perfect colour, to blend away those tired tresses.

Turn up the heat By Carl Pattison WHEN the heat is on, guys want to look good on the beach, and feel cool. Wearing the right type of clothing - and choosing something that suits you - is a certain way to pull off your beach look. It’s your choice as to whether you prefer briefs or shorts. Both have their benefits and drawbacks. Shorts, if longer, tend to result in more tan lines. They aren’t as good for swimming because they can constrict. On the other hand, Speedos are more revealing, and, unless you are body-sure, they can make you feel body-conscious. Choosing your style is entirely up to you. Block colours, wild prints and florals have been seen in many stores this season. Speedo-type swimwear can vary, from simple to extravagant. Show your individual

style, or blend into the background. Also, your choice of footwear is important. From flip-flops to deck-shoes, getting the right look is easy - if

you know how to matchup colours and styles. Vest-type tops will carry you from the beach and back home. Mix up the colours to create your own, individual style. Head-gear is important, too, as it not only finishes off your outfit, but keeps the scorching sun at bay later. Baseball caps fit the bill if you’re going for that sporty look, or opt for a trilby-style hat if you want more of a dressedup style of your own. Don’t forget those allimportant sunglasses, which set off your summer look - and protect your eyes, too. Never opt for the cheaper varieties because your eyes will suffer in the future. And don’t dig out your old-and-ageing beachwear. Check out the stores for inexpensive, yet stylish, clothing, to keep you looking cool on the beach this year.

Viagra works on impotence because its main ingredient boosts blood flow, which can also help damaged hearts. And Professor Andrew Trafford, the British scientist in charge of a special survey into the drug, says the findings are “incredibly exciting”. The study, carried out by the University of Manchester’s Centre for Cardiac Research, shows that cells from a failing heart actually survive longer when given a Viagra-like drug. It blocks an enzyme called PDE5, which controls blood vessels, and the way the heart’s muscle cells handle calcium. The research scientists focused on 6,000 male diabetic patients in Cheshire, who had been prescribed Viagra for erectile dysfunction. Diabetics are prone to heart problems. But these patients had a much lower risk of suffering a heart attack or dying, from heart-failure, than patients who do not take the drug. The team, funded by

Viagra’s the route to a man’s heart

the British Heart Foundation, now hope to show that Viagra can also prevent abnormal heart rhythms, known as arrhythmias, which kill up to 50% of heartfailure patients. Team leader Prof Trafford said: “Heart failure is a devastating condition. Your heart is not pumping blood around your body as well as it used to. It can really impact quality of life, and the outlook for patients is grim. “But our studies have shown that drugs used for treating erectile dysfunction have a very pronounced effect in slowing the progression of heart failure, as well as reducing the likelihood of fatal arrhythmias.

He added: “Patients who receive Viagra, or similar drugs for erectile dysfunction, are far less likely to die from a heart attack.” And his team of scientists see no reason why Viagra should not help female heart patients as well, which is good news for the UK’s 500,000-plus heart-failure sufferers. Viagra was first introduced in the Nineties as a remedy for angina, but it was also found to help erectile dysfunction. Some patients even refused to hand their pills back at the end of experiments … for whatever reason! The study will be published in the British Medical Journal Heart.

Cats Welfare News

Let’s have a double! IF you’re thinking about bringing a kitten into your life, there are many reasons why you should consider bringing home a pair.

Yes, think two instead of one because it may actually be much easier and more beneficial - for the kittens and for you! Many people adopt a kitten and, a couple of years, later realise they want a second cat. Since adult cats are territorial, the introduction process often requires some care and lots of patience. In many cases, people often consider adopting two kittens at once but are concerned about the added work and costs. In reality, a second kitten won’t add much extra work, and the benefits of companionship will enrich both their lives greatly There’s also fun in abundance for you, such as: *Twice the love *Twice the cuddles *Instant entertainment, watching them play and wrestle each other *Two kittens can enter-

tain each other while you’re busy or at work *There’s not much added cost to having a second kitten So if you’re thinking about adopting a kitten and are unsure whether to adopt a second one as well, here’s some more information: Kittens together Kittens are still in the learning stages and they learn from their mother, their environment and from each other. Kitten-to-kitten interaction and playtime are actually valuable, educational opportunities to help them develop important social skills they will need later in life. They learn how to communicate and interpret each other’s signals, how hard to bite during playtime and how to share territory. In the case of a litter of kittens, the siblings have been together since birth and are well into this process. They’re already bonded by the time you come along, and what an excellent way to start! Another benefit is that in the case of rescue kittens, they have been without their mother.

The kittens are even too young to be away from their litter mates. So much learning and socialisation take place in the early part of a kitten’s life. If you adopt a pair, that will continue, and they can create security and comfort for each other. Get two for one If you do decide to adopt two kittens, Cats Welfare will pay for the first year’s kitten injections, microchip and neutering for the second one. Yes, on-going costs will still be down to you but the biggest normal costs in the early years of the second kitten are covered. If you would like to ask questions, or meet any of the many kittens we have available, ring or whatsapp Maria on 646 629 129. She available seven days a week, from 9am to 6pm. Cut-price neutering We’ve had a great response to our fabulous June offer of cat neutering at a discount price. Not only does neutering stop kittens, but it also stops your cat developing some very serious cancers and other diseases. If you love your cat, as

you surely must do, and want to help keep it safe and healthy, neutering is imperative even if it’s a “house cat”. Males can be neutered from four months onwards and females a month later. And for June only, neutering is only 35 euros for males, 65 euros for females. We collaborate with three vet practices, in Las Chafiras, Los Cristianos and Gran Sur. Contact us to receive your unique promotion code, via our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife.com/contacts - or ring or whatsapp Maria 646 629 129 (7 days a week, 9am-6pm). Your donations Do you have anything to donate to help us raise funds? Items can be dropped into to our San Blas shop in Golf del Sur (behind HiperDino). It is open seven days a week (10am6pm). but on Saturdays from 11am-4pm). Kids live the dream, from riches to crocs TENERIFE Isla Sur Lion’s Club is certainly living up to its goals and aspirations to serve, assist and bring joy and hope to needy people in every community around the world. Barely two weeks have passed since a sevenday, fun-packed “dream holiday” was organised for under-privileged children from the UK and Poland. The trip began at Tenerife North for 35 underprivileged children, their carers and Prakash Udhwani, the Lions Holiday Chairman, who said: “We were warmly received on arrival at the Malaga airport by the various Lion’s clubs in Malaga, Mijas, Torremolinos, Nerja and Marbella. “The clubs displayed great hospitality and warmth, and made sure there were numerous, attractive excursions, with everything perfectly planned.” And the kids’ activities really were tremendous: a visit to Mijas, where the horse-riding was a delight in itself, and a visit to the miniature museum, concluded their first day. The second day comprised a stroll and

sightseeing, which gave the youngsters (and carers) a sneak-peek into the lavish lifestyle of the rich and famous, in Marbella and Puerto Banus. The expensive cars and private yachts made it a once-in-a-lifetime encounter for the visitors. They also went to the biggest Crocodile Park, where the numbers and size of the crocs sent a chill down everyone´s spine. In addition, the cablecar ride was a fantastic experience, floating on top of the skyscrapers and viewing the whole city from a great height was something beyond words. Tivoli World, with all its own attractions and rides, was also a great success - the kids could have stayed all day! In a nut-shell, this was indeed a ‘Dream Holiday’ in the truest sense, and a genuine feeling agreed by hosts and guests alike. All the events and activities from this special holiday, and the aspirations of Tenerife Isla Sur Lion’s Club, are available in our Facebook Page athttps://www.facebook. com/TenerifeIslaSur/

Spear mint Chuckers! A STRONG start to the season for Division 1 leaders Gaffers enabled them to hold a sevenpoint cushion at one point. But not now.

An unexpected 6-2 home defeat by Spear Chuckers cut that early lead to just one point. And what a fine performance by newlypromoted Valle San Lorenzo outfit. Less of a Spear Mint, more an Extra-Strong, perhaps!

That leaves just two unbeaten teams, Pas O Nadas and Scruffy Macs. The Nadas, now in second spot, had Gualty notching his second maximum as they routed Sandys Reborn 7-1, while Tom banged in his third 180 for Scruffys, who beat Playboys by the same margin. A decidedly off-form Phoenix Bar lost at home against The Pub, despite Calvo being otherwise engaged and under the thumb … so I am told! Boothen held the trebles to win by the odd leg against Exiles, and

Palms Sports Bar put six past Sandys International. Picassos, this season’s singles knock-out sponsors, are now a point clear at the summit of Division 2, courtesy of a 6-2 success at Clouseaus and a 180 from boss-man Per. ALINA Maksymenko, the former Ukrainian rhythmic gymnastics champion, has been giving a series of master classes to young athletes in Adeje.

Alina, bronze-medal winner in the 2013 Kiev World Championships, appeared in Tenerife at the invitation of Club Tenesay and Adeje Council’s Sports Department. Over 100 Tenerife disciples of the sport travelled to El Galeón sports centre to train with Alina, a former Olympic competitor who is now a coach. “It’s my first time here

and I am really enjoying it,” she said after her first day’s work. All the gymnasts here will learn a lot of new techniques, and I will help them in their sporting development, and to improve as athletes.” Adeje Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso thanked the Ukrainian star for her time and dedication, saying: “We are privileged to have an athlete of this standing here with us.” He also praised the initiative of Tenesay, the local rhythmic gymnastics club, for inviting her to Adeje. “It’s one of the most popular sports in the borough,” he added.

By Roscoe IT has not been the best of tournaments so far. The swelling of the European Championships to 24 teams has seen two weeks of action, just to lose eight teams. Yes, the fact that third-place sides could make the knock-out stages did give the last games some added interest. But it has also led to a plethora of boring matches, with sides happy to park the bus and play for a draw, or even a single-goal defeat. Take England, for example. In recent months they have excelled against Germany and France, playing flowing football. But in Group B, they were made to look pedestrian and limited as their three rivals bored the life out of them. Russia’s lucky, late header, and a howler from Joe Hart - that was all they created in 270 minutes against the Three Lions. Compare these group matches with the expansive Copa America: it’s chalk and cheese. However all that could be set to end. We are finally into knock-out football, and I wonder if the chains will be released. Switzerland v Poland Both sides probably achieved what they set out to do. The Swiss are a very average outfit, but they do dig in against the better teams. They did okay for long periods against France, and they have a wealth of big-game experience. Poland were excellent against Germany and should have beaten the world champions. That said, they are now in the easier side of the draw. In our preview, we said they could go far and they must believe they can at least get to the semi-finals. Lewandowski has looked off the pace so far, but he may just be saving himself. He should be the difference. Prediction: Poland win Wales v Northern Ireland It has been a fortnight the Wales supporters will be telling their grandkids for decades to come. They got a bit

lucky against Slovakia, but totally outclassed Russia. There is still a nagging feeling that the loss against England, and their negativity, is probably where they are really at. But they will be bouncing against a Northern Ireland side who have nothing to lose. They should have shipped six against Germany, but keeper Michael McGovern had the game of his career. If they attack Wales, fire with fire, it could be interesting. Prediction: Wales (in extra-time) Croatia v Portugal Apart from a sloppy 20 minutes against the Czech Republic, Croatia have looked the best side in France. Tipped here at the start, they have certainly produced. The Spain win was no fluke, and they look solid, from 1 to 11. In many ways, Portugal will bring out the best in them as they are more comfortable on the counter-attack. They have the defence to snuff out Ronaldo, whose two goals against Hungary masked his poor form. Sure, he is still one hell of a player. But he is simply not as good in a Portugal shirt. The players are not on his wavelength and he gets frustrated. Ronaldo, often snatching at chances, needs some help from the others. Three draws in what should have been an easy group

says it all. Prediction: Croatia win France v Rep of Ireland The hosts breezed through Group A without ever really needing to find third gear. But is there a third gear? They laboured at times against Albania, and I’m still not sure Didier Deschamps knows what his best team is. Pogba looks leggy and may be feeling the effects of a long season. Payet has been unplayable at times, although the Ireland lads should know what they have to do. That the Green Army are in the last 16 is simply down to their never-say-die attitude. They were excellent against Italy’s reserves on Wednesday. Keogh and Duffy looked smart at centre-back, and James McClean was everything his country needed him to be. Atrocious against Belgium but smart against Italy. Which Ireland will we see on Sunday? Prediction: France (in extra-time) Germany v Slovakia The world champions are a cliché. Efficient. Workmanlike. German! Yet something is missing. Gomez hasn’t convinced in attack. Kroos has been world-class in midfield, and the defence is sound. But this team, and squad, are not as good as the one in Brazil in 2014. Slovakia should be a gimme but after that, the questions get tougher. Slovakia are what my

Italy v Spain The tie of the round. Italy rested nine players for the match against the Republic of Ireland and will be cherryripe. They looked like champions-in-waiting in the first two matches, and they have so much quality in the side. The defence is mustard and they have the patience for Spain’s boring tap, tap, tap style of play. Like Germany, Spain are not the force of old. I feel they lack a genuine, world-class finisher and you always feel they will ship a goal or two. The off-field problems haven’t helped, and not many teams put two past Italy. Prediction: Italy win

Spanish pals call “antifootball”. They sit as a team, fill in the holes and hope for a set-piece or a breakaway. They frustrate, as England will tell you. That said, they can look classy going forward, as they did in the second half against Wales, and in the match with Russia. When allowed off the leash, they can score. Jan Kozak is a shrewd manager and he will hope to take it to penalties. Prediction: German win Hungary v Belgium Hungary are the new Leicester. For Jamie Vardy, read Balazs Dzsudzsak. Even the most

one-eyed fan didn’t see this coming. Credit where it’s due, they have been magnificent. History also tells us that they may not be finished yet. Bernd Storck (love that name) has certainly delivered the goods. He has vowed to carry on attacking and why not? Belgium are flat-track bullies. They don’t like it up ‘em (Italy) and though they can batter a side when in the mood (Ireland), they often go into a shell (Sweden). The first goal is key. Belgium have won 17 of their last 18 games when scoring first. Prediction: Belgium (on penalties)

England v Iceland Roy you old dinosaur. His brain-fart team selection put England in the wrong side of the draw. Only a late Arnor Ingvi Traustason goal saved his side from facing Portugal. It’s hard what to make of England. So dominant yet so toothless. Yet they are on the verge of battering someone, if they don’t do something stupid first. Iceland are now here for the beer. They defied the odds to get to the last 16, but they were always better than socalled pundits thought. They will try to frustrate England, like the last three sides, but an early goal will see them chase. For England it’s simple. Stop Sigurdsson. Prediction: England win
