‘It’s a miracle that nobody was killed’ Continued from Front That is part and parcel of living on a volcanic island. What is not accepted is a man-made problem, which results in tragedy - and this week, scores of people could have been killed in Punta de Teno. One person said it was “a miracle nobody was killed” after a major tourist road crumbled over a cliff and into the ocean. On Tuesday evening, at around 6.30, a stretch of the TF-445, just past Buenavista del Norte, collapsed. As the pictures show, it was a major road collapse which saw a large portion of the road (8 metres by 4 metres) crumble down the hillside. It happened on the road held in by the retaining sea wall, about 100m before the La Monja rock, forcing traffic to a halt in both directions. Altogether, 129 people, including 40 children, were trapped as the collapse made the road impassable. This also meant that rescue vehicles were unable to get through to those affected. Choppy seas and windy conditions prevented rescue boats from reaching the scene. Santiago del Teide Mayor Emilio Navarro actually mobilised three

whale-watch boats and a fire-fighter volunteer in a speedboat, from his municipality, yet it proved an impossible task. Meanwhile Cabildo President Carlos Alonso activated the Island’s emergency plan, which led to an air operation being launched. It involving three Army helicopters, another from the Guardia Civil, an aircraft from the Canarias’ Emergency and Rescue Group (GES), and help from Tenerife fire-fighters’ Consortium, Guardia Civil, Civil Protection and National Police - all combing to a huge rescue job to carry everyone to safety. Alonso and his staff also raced to the scene and stayed there until the early hours, helping to co-ordinate the operation. It took some time before the emergency services could work the problem. To add to the distress, however, a number of people caught up in the collapse were isolated by a gap of some 1½ metres wide. They were eventually rescued via a system known as “lifeline”, which featured a series of ropes used to bridge the gap. The group were then secured with harnesses and helmets, and helped

across by fire-fighters. All the stranded were then flown to Garachico port, identified and served with some food and drink. At 1.30am, it was confirmed that everyone had been rescued successfully, with no injuries. An investigation was launched immediately into what caused the collapse, generating what is known as a sink-hole. The collapse happened almost a year to the day after the stretch of road was reopened following repair and safety work. The aim then was to reduce the number of rock-fall incidents and increase the safety on the roads,

in the event of serious weather. This week’s problem is clearly something that the authorities hadn’t thought about. The following morning, Alonso returned to the scene with Nieves Barreto, head of Política Territorial, Sostenibilidad y Seguridad of the Canarian Government. Cabildo Road Minister Ofelia Manjon was also present, along with Ministers Miguel Becerra and Blanca Perez, and Buenavista Mayor Eva Garcia. Alonso said repair work would start right away, but could take a bit of time. “We’ve been looking at the problem and as-

sessing what needs to be done,” he said. “The first difficulty is that there is a high-voltage cable, which was underneath the road. “Obviously, we need to disconnect that and deal with that problem before we can start on phase one.” Manjon added: “Once that is done, we will move in a specialist company. They will secure the road section, assess the damage, clear the loose material and start the process of repairing the road. “Meanwhile, we will create a safe passage on the far side of the road to move the vehicles trapped on the eastbound part of the road. The fire service will be in charge of that project.”

Alonso said the road was now a priority for the Cabildo, but warned there would be no quick fix. “Where the problem is, that’s a major problem,” he added. “We have to make sure the surface can take the weight of what we need to achieve - it’s not as though we can build a bridge at this point. Where we are is a very important place for many people. “There is a lot of agriculture around here, and they rely on this road for transporting their produce. Thankfully, we are off-season for, say, the tomatoes. “But that’s only until the season starts in August, and we have to have action by then.” The big question is, what caused the collapse? The wall on the ocean side of the road is not eroded. There are underground water pipes on that section, which transfer desalinated water to the tomato fields. But they are understood to be in perfect working order, and there is no saturated ground or evidence of a leak. Manjon did speculate that the area under the wall could have come loose, but that doesn’t explain the large-scale collapse of the road.

ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, and Cabildo President Carlos Alonso held an intensive working session on Monday, during which a number of key joint projects were discussed.

Members of the Adeje Council and technical experts from both bodies were also present as they delved into the areas of infrastructure, social development and tourism for the borough. Afterwards, the two men announced details of the measures agreed over the short, medium and long-term. Among the important topics were the improvement of the road connections between Fañabé and the coastal tourist zone, the finalisation of the Armeñime roundabout, access to Los Menores, a footbridge over the Barranco del Agua and renovation in Playa Paraíso. Mayor Fraga said: “We

15th July - 21st July 2016

When Fraga met Alonso asked for this official, institutional visit to give us an opportunity to review what is going on in the borough, and what areas have particular needs - whether they be socially, roads, mobility, tourism...” The Mayor thanked the President for attending a meeting under the instruments of governance that allow the two bodies to work together. “We are enjoying a healthy tourism industry with the expectation of improvement and investment,” said Fraga.“And we wanted to tick off the joint projects we wish to pursue with the Cabildo. “We have some big challenges ahead, and, if we don’t plan in advance, we will have complications. So we have agreed a commitment to work together.” Cabildo chief Alonso congratulated the excellent working relationship between the two administrations, both in tourism and other areas of mutual interest. He stressed the importance of moving forward with the

right planning to organise the investments in advance, in line with established priorities. “The Cabildo has been working on an insulardevelopment, strategic plan for a year,” he said. “It has been introduced as a management tool to help put 36 action plans in place along five distinct lines. “They will coincide with the priorities this Council have identified as important for the balanced development of the Island.” The investment for this long-term plan is

estimated at 200m euros, which represents 1.2% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). It will be made available from Cabildo resources, which are transferred to councils via sectorial programmes. Among the issues discussed were the working delays on Armeñime roundabout, caused by problems concerning land acquisition - the Mayor has assured it has been resolved - developing the road link from Fañabé to the tourist zone, which is also cur-

rent, subject to landpurchase discussions, as well as other access matters. Projects concerning tourism excellence were also discussed, and the Mayor said: “We are left only with regional, Cabildo and Council funding because the Spanish Government has withdrawn funding.” He added that they were looking at improvements in the coastal paths, the Barranco del Agua bridge to link the Rui with the Sheraton Hotels, and

the on-going work in Playa Paraíso. There was also mention of work to improve the senior citizen’s home, as well as the Las Nieves foster home. The visit ended with meetings between the second Vice-President and Social Action Cabildo Councillor Cristina Valido, with Adeje Councillors Isabel Fernández González and Cristina Carballo Fuente, at the San Juan day centre. Cabildo tourism chief Alberto Bernabé and Aurelio Abreu, Councillor for Borough Cooperation and Housing, alongside Roads and Development Directors Ofelia Manjón and Miguel Becerra, spent working time with Adeje Councillors Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, Ermitas Moreira García, José María Álvarez Acosta, and Zebenzui Chinea Linares. They visited the Barranco del Agua - the desalination plant in La Caleta – the Playa Paraíso renovations and the La Atalaya roundabout to see work on-going and completed.

Canarian hospitals top private sector SOME 57.9% of Canarian hospitals are private owned, and they all make a profit!

This is reflected in the annual catalogue of hospitals 2016, prepared by the Ministry of Health,

with data collected up to 31st December 2015. The Canary Islands has more private hospitals than any other region in Spain. Andalusia has 48.1%; Aragon, 24.1%; Asturias, 30%; Balearic Islands, 41.7%; Cantabria, 14.3%; Castilla and Leon, 30.6%; Castilla La

Mancha, 28.6%, Cataluña, 53.5%; Valencia, 32.8%; Extremadura, 42.1%; Madrid, 40.7%; Murcia, 51.9%; Navarre, 18.2%; Basque Country, 34.1% and La Rioja, 57.1%. The Balearic Islands, for example, have 24 hospitals in total, of

which 10 are private, but non-beneficial. The catalogue also states that the Canaries has a total of 38 hospitals, of which 22 are private; two are private but beneficial; five belong to their respective Councils, and nine belong to the national

health system (in our case Canario Health Service). It also clarifies hospital complexes, such as the Maternal-Insular of Gran Canaria) In addition, It adds that there are 7,646 hospital beds, of which 63% are civilian public and

33.9% for private profit. The remaining 3% are private, non-profit. In total, the Canaries has 237 items of hightech equipment, with 33 TAC, 32 mammography and 24 magnetic devices (most of them in private centres) plus resonance, among others.

Africa Campus is healthy advert for Canary Islands AFRICA, our nearest neighbour, is fast turning into an important business contact for the Canary Islands. And, just a few weeks after the Routes Africa conference, Campus Africa is showcasing the full potential of the Archipelago in La Laguna.

Among other sectors, this event is helping promote health tourism within a sector of the continent’s population. José Gómez Soliño, former University of La Laguna (ULL) rector, and scientist Basilio Valladares, are presenting the second edition of this international meeting, entitled “Science for Afri-

can development”. The campus, organised by the Institute of Tropical Diseases ULL, began on Monday and brought more than 50 Africans specialists to the Island. Many are college students, but among them are also medical experts, doctoral researchers and those with knowledge of how the Islands’ health system functions. Gomez Soliño insists that the campus is not focused exclusively on health, but their relationship with the progress of any society is inevitable to have a central role. For him, the philosophy of this conference can be summed up in

this one sentence by Joseph E Stiglitz, Nobel Prize-winner in Economics. “What has long been recognised is that the improvement in the quality of life is the result of technological advances, and not the accumulation of capital.” For this reason, a large part of the programme will be devoted to health research. There will also be time for experts in other sectors to present their achievements in energy, communications or water use. Soliño said: “This meeting is a joint venture in which numerous private donors are involved.”

The Ebola outbreak last year made a global society more aware that emerging diseases were a problem which crossed borders and demanded a shared responsibility. One aspiration of this campus is to transmit knowledge to the closest environment to the Archipelago, West Africa, creating networks of collaboration between the University of La Laguna, the Gaston Berger (Senegal) and Ibn Zohr (Agadir). “They are mediumsized universities that aspire to excellence, and the University of La Laguna can help a lot,” said Soliño. More than 70 local, national and international speakers will discuss, analyse and make proposals on health, co-operation and science on the continent. “We firmly believe in the need for this project,” added Soliño.

Referendum webpage should ease the worry BRITISH nationals, looking for advice on travelling and living in Europe, can now visit a new webpage on the UK government website at www.gov. uk following the EU referendum result.

It explains that negotiations for the UK to leave the EU may take up to two years or more. The government will negotiate new arrangements with the EU, including issues affect-

ing British expats and travellers. The government also wants proper protection for the legal rights of British nationals living in European countries, as well as EU nationals in the UK. Until then there will be no immediate changes. During the period of the negotiations, the UK remains a full member of the EU, entitled to all the benefits and obligations of membership. The webpage, which also includes information on passports, pensions, healthcare, has a link to some general information on applying for dual citizenship.

We ‘Love’ the Brexit Brits THE British “love affair” with Tenerife will keep them visiting the Island, even if holidays become more expensive following Brexit.

Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe believes Tenerife is so “well positioned in the hearts and minds of British travellers” that they will continue to choose our destination over others, even if there are cheaper alternatives. With that in mind, Tenerife Tourism Corporation (TTG) is launching a new UK campaign next week to solidify the relationship between Tenerife and the British market. It is adopting the idea of extending a “#BigWarmHug” to British tourists and the trade, including an incentive for travel agents to win a holiday to Tenerife. Bernabe said: “We will tell the British that they’ll never be out of our hearts, whether they are in the EU or out of the EU.” Travel agents will be encouraged to download and print the #bigwarmhug logo from webtenerife.co.uk, and take a photo of themselves holding it to use on social media. The campaign launch comes just weeks after Tenerife’s tour-

ist board revealed a 20.8% growth in UK visitor numbers during the first five months of the year, compared with the same 2015 period. Bernabe expects this growth to be maintained throughout 2016, which means we should be welcoming a record two million British holiday-makers to Tenerife over the year. “The growth is huge, much bigger than we ever expected,” the Tourism Minister told TTG. “Not even in our dreams did we think we’d experience such a high increase.” Bernabe pointed to the repeat holidaymaker levels from the UK - up to 79% - and their high satisfaction scores. Brits marked the Island more highly than visitors from any of its 15 other source markets, and Bernabe sees that as further evidence of the “love

story” between the UK and Tenerife. He described this year’s unprecedented arrivals’ growth as a “wonderful accident”, thanks, in part, to geopolitical issues facing other popular holiday destinations. But he did stress that Tenerife would not expect the growth to continue so rapidly after this year; and nor could the Island sustain it. “We would be pleased to maintain 2016 numbers in 2017,” he said. “We are an island, with finite space and resources. We want you to be able to go to the beach and find a nice space for yourself - to go to Mount Teide and not feel crowded.” The visitors’ surge had created problems for hotel capacity, he admitted. “All our hotels, if not fully booked, will almost be,” he said. “There is always

some availability, but hotels in general are quite full for the whole year.” While existing hotels are becoming fully booked for the summer months, newcomers will soon be online, including the music-themed Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife, scheduled to open in October. Bernabe said that the growing luxury accommodation was a strategic goal for the Island, with existing properties also upgrading facilities to five-star quality. Hotels are not the only amenity being developed, with new excursions and activities being created to meet demands. Bernabe highlighted a new stargazing tour, which is proving incredibly popular, as an example. Active tourism is also enjoying significant growth, he added, the Island hosting several, high-profile, sports events, in line with “the image we are trying to create”. The Tourism Minister also said that hosting the recent Routes Africa event, attended by 200 air-route, development professionals, had been extremely successful. And Tenerife hopes to position itself as an international hub for African airlines, either stopping over in Tenerife or as their final destination.

Water getting the treatment THE Cabildo is investing 78 million euros in the comprehensive treatment of the Island’s waters, as part of the Strategic Development Insular Framework, according to the Spanish Government. There are two funda-

mental aspects of this new project: its execution in three years, and co-ordination with the Island Water Council. There was a meeting this week to take the first steps in the planning and implementation of Municipal Co-operation Plan 2018-2020, attended by Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, Vice President and Municipal Co-operation Minister Aurelio Abreu, along with Water Min-

ister Manuel Martinez. The unanimous agreement allocates a total of 48m euros for sanitation networks in three years. This is a big new deal because the full implementation of Municipal Cooperation Plan 20142017, also had a budget of 48 million euros - without any extra work. Alonso said the new agreement will improve basic services for the public and stressed: “This new

plan has been included in the Insular Strategic Development Framework. We have a plan to improve management of resources. “The aim is to give continuity to the work, co-ordinating with the Island’s municipalities and paying special attention to the water treatment. “There are jobs unseen by the naked eye which need to be done, and these improvements help the quality of lives of people.”

Home-owners’ champion awarded honorary MBE THE leader of an association representing owners of illegal homes in Andalucia has been awarded an honorary MBE for services to the British community in Spain.

Mrs Maura Hillen, from Ireland, was given the award to reflect her work as President and spokesperson of Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No! (AUAN), which campaigns for the legalisation of homes in Almeria’s Almanzora Valley. That is where thousands of properties mostly British-owned have lacked a final habitation certificate since they were built,10-15 years ago. Under Maura’s leadership, the campaigning AUAN (No to Urban Planning Abuse in Almanzora) lobbies the Spanish authorities at local, regional and national level for the legalisation of homes, to get them connected properly to water and electricity, with mitigation of the costs of doing so, and information and support for affected home-owners. The association has some 500 members, mostly British, and also Belgian and Irish nationals. Maura said: “I am very pleased and delighted to accept this award, not only for myself but on behalf of every member of AUAN, who has also played no small part in defending the rights of home-owners in Spain, most especially committee members, past and present, and

those that came before me as President of AUAN.” She added: “This award is a recognition and vindication of their efforts and perseverance, as much as it is of mine.” Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, said: “Since 2008, Maura Hillen MBE has made a tireless contribution towards resolving the property problems that affect thousands of British home-owners in Spain. “I am very pleased that Her Majesty The Queen has approved this honour, which recognises her dedication and resilience. “Under her leadership, AUAN is a professionally-run, well-respected organisation, which has secured expert legal advice and, in turn, proposed realistic solutions to the Spanish regional and national authorities. “In March last year, the Criminal Code was modified following proposals from AUAN that judges take into account that most owners purchased in good faith, and that compensation should be paid, prior to any demolition. “That was a significant step forward in reforming a legal system that, AUAN argued, had failed adequately to recognise the rights of home-owners or compensate for their losses. “I know Maura intends to keep campaigning for more action to resolve outstanding cases, and to increase the legal security for future buyers.” Maura is also Councillor for Tourism & International Relations in Albox, Almeria, and a Deputy Mayor.

Shop safely, shop in Adeje ADEJE Council has launched a campaign to promote responsible, commercial activities in the borough, under the slogan #YoComproenAdeje (I shop in Adeje).

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Roads have gone to pot THIS week’s front-page story was rather close to home. I’m still trying to work out how there were no fatalities. It’s a stretch of road I have driven on a few times over the years. Last Easter, I took that scenic trip down to Punta de Teno. It’s a gorgeous stretch of road. Well, it is unless you’re stuck behind a tractor or a lorry. And I do wonder how much of the responsibility for the road slide is down to those sort of vehicles. I know it’s the only road in and out for a few businesses. I also know that stretch of road, like plenty others I could mention, is full of potholes. Some of the main trunk roads in the South are nothing short of a disgrace. I know the mayors are working on getting them upgraded and, of course, things take time. But come on! The TF-1, from the El Medano turn-off all the way to Las Americas, is a joke. Remember that for most tourists, it’s the first thing they experience. And it’s surely not the message we want to be sending out. That’s before the safe-

ty question. This week, I was driving on one of the main roads towards Valle San Lorenzo. As is often the case, a crazy kid on a bike undertook (few things boil my blood more) and then overtook the next car. What he hadn’t anticipated was the rather large pothole that was a few yards in front of him. He swerved right, caught the edge of the rain gutter and went out the side door. No real harm done, apart from a bit of pride, but another example of a black spot. What about the road from Guargacho to Palm Mar. The righthand side has a sheer drop but no crash barrier. Oh yes, and a lot of potholes. And coaches. It’s a place where, you just know, one day you will hear about a nasty incident. A couple of decades ago John Major famously set up a “Cones Hotline”, and I reckon we should have something similar here. Of course, it might take them a few years to fill them in!

The Council reminds people of the existence of the OMIC, the municipal consumers’ information office, which can help with consumer issues while in the borough. “What we are also doing, alongside the

to apply reductions in many commercial sectors. The OMIC also reminds people that this is just the time to avoid impulse buys, and to make a list of what you need - as well as a budg-

et estimate - before you go shopping. It also reminds shoppers that any item for sale must show the reduced price and the original price, and you must keep receipts for everything.

Taxmen are swinging by nightclubs - in daylight! THE Spanish Tax Agency has launched a major raid against fraud at nightlife venues across Spain, during the day. The move comes at the height of the summer season, with clubs in full swing. Officers have taken away large sums of undeclared money and computer equipment. More than 500 tax inspectors, and other lawenforcement officers, have already searched the premises of more than 100 companies running bars, pubs, nightclubs and other entertainment venues in 11 regions of Spain. The Tax Agency has been intensifying its scrutiny of night-life venues since 2012. And in recent years, agency employees have also shown up in the

middle of the day at popular clubs, which have been late with their payments consistently, confiscating their cash boxes. Premises under investigation include the highly-popular Privilege and Space venues on Ibiza, which can accommodate thousands of clubbers. The raids are part of a drive by the Spanish tax authorities to crack down on fraud at nightlife venues in touristheavy areas. Inspectors have detected many undeclared transactions, and the widespread use of software that allows users to keep a dual accounting system, with the money in the second account staying under the radar of tax authorities.

Recycling upgrade to cost 115m euros THE Technical Council of Tenerife, and the Island municipalities, have devised a 115m-euro plan to improve recycling and, thus, fulfil European Union guidelines.

This programme comprises a dozen new facilities and an improvement to the Arico Environmental Complex (PIRS). It will be backed by the Cabildo and private

promotion of local shops and businesses in Adeje, is letting clients know the plus factor of shopping locally,” said Local Development Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín. “We’re also telling them that there is an office here in the case of a difficulty with a purchase, or a complaint regarding service.” During the summer, which coincides with the second sales season of the year, product prices on offer can fall by up to 60% of the original cost, and local businesses have agreed

companies, and the idea is to start the process this year. Jose Antonio Valbuena, Cabildo Director of Environment and Sustainability, anticipates that the new measures will be fully implemented. The proposal made by the technicians, which must be agreed by the Cabildo, will see an initial investment of 75m euros, which takes around 66% of the total budget to build seven logistics centres. These allow the collection and pre-treatment of waste, and there will

also be three packaging plants and three composting plants. The Cabildo, responsible for the waste treatment in the municipalities, wants an alternative programme for the next 30 years, valued at 140m euros . That’s 25m euros more than the plan revealed this week, and there’s a feeling that the municipalities will reject it because it will be too expensive. Over the course of this contract, there will be regular agreements between the Cabildo

and municipalities to comply with European guidelines. Valbuena said: “We should really be doing better. We should be 50% better by 2020, while reducing waste by 70% by 2030. The reality is that Tenerife is late and should speed up.” The Cabildo director added: “Currently, 500 kilos per capita are generated, and there is much work to be done to recycle more. “Right now, only around 20% of the population separate their garbage for recycling.”

May moves in to number 10 THERESA May, Britain’s new Prime Minister, promises a bold new global future as she embarks on the monumental task of leading the country out of the European Union.

The 59-year-old former Home Secretary, who held that job for more than six years, assumed office on Wednesday after an audience with the Queen. She drove straight to her new 10 Downing Street home, vacated hours earlier by David Cameron, then told the nation: “We will rise to the challenge. “As we leave the European Union, we will forge a bold, new, positive role for ourselves in the world, and we will make Britain a country that works not for a privileged few, but for every one of us.” Mrs May, the second female UK Prime Minister only, behind Margaret Thatcher, has a big job on her hands. She will try to reunite the ruling Conservative party, which is divided, and a fractured nation in which many, on the evidence of the Brexit vote, feel angry with the political elite. But she acknowl-

edged the struggles faced by many Britons, pledging: “The government I lead will be driven not by the interests of the privileged few, but by yours. We will do everything we can to give you more control over your lives. “When we take the big calls, we’ll think not of the powerful but you; when we pass new laws we’ll listen not to the mighty but to you; when it comes to taxes, we’ll prioritise not the wealthy but you.”

Mrs May faced immediate pressure from EU leaders to serve formal notice of Britain’s withdrawal and set the clock ticking on a twoyear countdown to its final departure. But in phone calls with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, she said she needed time. Her spokeswoman said: “On all the phone calls, the Prime Minister emphasised her commitment to deliv-

ering the will of the British people to leave the European Union. And she said she hoped these talks could be conducted in a constructive and positive spirit.” Just an hour or so after entering her new office, Mrs May began naming her Cabinet, appointing experienced Foreign Minister Philip Hammond to take charge of the Finance Ministry in place of Chancellor George Osborne.

A major surprise was the Foreign Secretary appointment of Boris Johnson, a leading Euro-sceptic who led the Brexit charge. Other prominent “Leave” campaigners were also rewarded. David Davis took the key role of Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, and Liam Fox will head a new, international trade department. Mrs May actually sided with Cameron in trying to keep Britain

inside the EU, so she needs to reach out to the winning Brexiteers to heal divisions in the ruling party and show her commitment to respecting the popular vote. And that is why “Brexit means Brexit” has quickly become her new mantra. By awarding Johnson such a senior job, she also showed a conciliatory side. The two had clashed over policing in London while Johnson was serving as Mayor, and since last month’s vote, for which he campaigned vigorously. Boris will probably be pleased, secretly at least, to learn that Mrs May has sacked Justice Secretary Michael Gove, who rode roughshod over his long-term friend in his own bid to lead the country. Among other appointments, Amber Rudd is promoted from being Energy Minister to take the Prime Minister’s former job of Home Secretary. The United States congratulated Mrs May on her appointment, White House spokesman Josh Earnest saying: “Based on the public comments we’ve seen from the incoming Prime Minister, she intends to pursue a course that’s consistent with the prescription President Obama has offered.”

Obama and Rajoy on the same wavelength MARIANO Rajoy, acting Spanish Prime Minister, met US President Barack Obama, on Sunday at Madrid’s Moncloa Palace during his first official visit to the country.

But the outgoing President had to squeeze in this trip to Spain, a key NATO and EU partner, before dashing home to deal with the aftermath of the horrific police killings in Dallas just days earlier. Obama, who prides himself on his measured approach, is usually loath to alter carefullylaid travel plans. But the shootings, just blocks from the site where John F. Kennedy was assassinated, has pushed a country rife with political tension to the edge. To his regret, the President was forced to trim a two-day visit to the Iberian peninsula to just one day, cancelling a trip to Seville

with King Felipe, after news that a black US Army veteran, on a sniper mission, killed five white police officers in Dallas last Thursday. Among other factors, Obama and Rajoy discussed such matters as the economic situation in the two countries, bilateral relations and the refugee crisis. The two leaders highlighted the economic achievements made by Spain in recent years, and Rajoy made it clear that the President was highly aware of economic trends in Spain. He also highlighted that Spain was no longer in recession and that it had the fastest-growing Eurozone economy. “We have resolved numerous imbalances,” he told Obama. “We have gained competitiveness and the Spanish economy can,

therefore, look forward to the future with optimism, provided we maintain an economic policy of control over public accounts and continue to implement structural reforms.” In turn, Obama congratulated Rajoy and the people of Spain on the progress achieved by their economy. “It has been a difficult journey but many of the changes made are starting to produce results,” he said. Rajoy outlined the need for Spain to form a government as soon as possible, stressing that he would do everything within his power to do so. And, while ensuring that having an acting government in place for the last seven months had not damaged the economy, he said the building of a stable government was essential. “I am absolutely convinced that ever y o n e will act r e sponsibly

and that Spain will, therefore, have a government soon,” he said. The two men agreed that, regardless of the outcome of the US elections and the process to form a government in Spain, bilateral relations between the two countries would continue to be excellent. Obama was adamant that the US and Spain enjoyed an “extremely strong” relationship, which enables joint efforts to be undertaken on numerous issues. They also spoke of Spain’s role in NATO, and Obama added: “I thank the people of Spain and the Spanish armed forces for the extraordinary leadership provided within the framework of NATO initiatives.” He also praised the work being carried out by Spain “to educate and train military servicemen and policemen in Iraq”. Rajoy also reiterated that the refugee crisis and immigration problems should be sorted out in the countries of origin for economic

reasons. “We believe it is important to resolve the problems in Libya and Syria quickly, because that will help us a great deal,” he told Obama. He added: “Efforts are being made in the European Union for it to provide assistance when trying to resolve the problems at source.” Before his arrival in Ma-

drid, Obama called on the next Spanish Government - whichever parties it comprises - to maintain the country’s commitment to Europe. He also spoke of the need for Spain and its European partners to become stronger, and improve defence spending. And, though he applauded the economy’s return of growth, he argued that austerity policies, applied in Spain and across Europe, contributed to social discontent in many European countries. Obama felt that last month’s UK Brexit vote was a reflection on the many Europeans feeling disadvantaged because of globalisation. “While the Brexit vote has obviously created uncertainty, it’s also important to remember what will not change America’s unbreakable ties with Europe, including our deep friendship and enduring alliance between the United States and Spain,” he said. “The relationship b e t w e e n Spaniards and Americans goes back centuries. We’re connected by the ties of family and culture, including millions of Americans who celebrate their Hispanic heritage. “We’re also major trading partners, and I would hope and expect that the next Spanish Government will be just as committed to a strong relationship with the United States and Europe.” The American Democratic politician, whose eight-year term as President is drawing to a close, is watching what he believes is Republican candidate Donald Trump putting his legacy in danger.

That legacy definitely includes one of the major achievements of his time in the White House: the re-establishment of relations with Cuba, which has removed an obstacle to improving relations with Latin America, which are now stronger than ever. Obama added: “I believe that American leadership is indispensable to the security and prosperity of the world. “That’s why we’re leading the global coalition to destroy ISIL, working tirelessly for a diplomatic solution to the Syrian civil war, contributing more humanitarian assistance than any other nation, and mobilising a global refugee summit this fall to mobilise new commitments. “And Spanish forces are critical to EU and NATO maritime security efforts in the Mediterranean. But it’s clear that no nation - even one as powerful as the United States - can solve these kinds of trans-national challenges alone. “We need coalitions and partnerships that draw on the unique strengths offered by various countries. We’re more secure when nations share the burdens and costs of upholding international security and peace. “That’s why we’re grateful for Spain’s contributions of personnel to help train Iraqi forces as they take the fight to ISIL. Spain is the first country to command NATO’s new joint task force, which is ready to deploy quickly across Europe. “Spanish forces are critical to EU and NATO maritime security efforts in the Mediterranean. And Spain is a leader in peace-keeping, from Bosnia to Lebanon to Africa. Finally, he said: “We also need Spain’s continued co-operation as we meet various challenges, from desperate migrants crossing the Mediterranean to confronting climate change.”

Smart move by Nintendo NINTENDO, the Japanese gaming company, saw its shares jump by nearly 25% on Monday following the success of Pokemon Go, its new smartphone game.

It debuted at the top of gaming charts in the US last week and will soon be released in Japan, although it is not yet available in the UK. Pokemon Go requires users to try to catch onscreen characters like Pikachu, using their real-world locations. And millions of users have already downloaded the game. According to data from Similar Web, within a day of its launch, the game was downloaded on to more US Android smartphones than dating application Tinder. Believe it or not, it has already generated headlines from armed robbers, using it to lure gamers into a trap, such as a person discovering a dead body in a river

while searching for a Pokemon character. The boom in Nintendo’s shares since the Pokemon Go debut has added more than £5.4bn to the company’s market value. Evan Lucas, an IG market strategist, said the investor speculation around the app was “amazing” but cautioned that the company must do more to justify the jump in its share price. “The question with

all apps is monetisation,” he told the BBC. “In-app purchases will be key to its long-term monetary success and, clearly, the market believes there will be a windfall.” There is also a question about how much profit Nintendo will actually receive from Pokemon Go, given that it wasn’t the main developer of the augmented, reality game. It has partnered with

US-based game developer Niantic and the Pokémon Company, which owns the rights to the characters. Traditionally, Nintendo, also behind the iconic Super Mario game, has relied on sales of its gaming consoles. However, these have slowed in recent years as more gamers move online, and on to portable devices. Analysts have criticised the company for

lagging behind rivals such as Sony, and trailing the growing smartphone market. In March, Nintendo released its first-ever mobile game Miitomo, which has done well, gaining one million users within three days of its launch. Now, the jubilant Japanese company now plans to launch four more smartphone games by the end of next March.

A quake of magnitude 3.9 on the Richter scale was registered on Sunday afternoon on Gran Canaria, according to the Geographic National Institute (IGN). It took place at 12.32pm with its epicentre in the municipality of Vega de San Mateo, just over 24 kilometres from Las Palmas, and focused at 43km deep, according to IGN data. Although the Geographic Institute notes in its report that the earthquake was not felt, several villagers of Temisas, in the municipality of Agüimes, called the Guardia Civil to report a tremor. Police said there was no major structural damage, and no one was injured.

SPAIN is preparing to distribute nearly two million euros to be used to aid refugees. But the authorities are still a long way from keeping their promise to welcome a certain number of asylum-seekers.

The government’s Council of Ministers meet today (Friday) to approve the criteria for distributing 1.75m to the country’s autonomous communities for helping refugees. Since the EU agreed on a plan to share in the responsibility of caring for refugees, under a redistribution and quota system, the Spanish Government has been criticised for dragging its feet in meeting its promises. The UN refugee agency said in April that

Spain needed to take a “greater responsibility” after its government had agreed to take in some 15,000 refugees from overwhelmed Greece and Italy. But in the first six months after the agreement, Spain took in just 18 people. More recently, the government has tried to speed up the process, pledging that it would be able to bring in 586 refugees by the end of June. But according to Europa Press, the country has taken in just 305. Meanwhile, the Spanish public has tried to put pressure on the government to do more. A May survey by Amnesty International found that Spaniards were among the nations most accepting of refugees worldwide. Some 97% of Spanish respondents said they would “personally accept people fleeing war or persecution” into their country.

Brighter outlook for Las Teresitas beach PLANS for the controversial Las Teresitas beach are coming along nicely, and the latest information really catches the eye.

The Gestur company’s new vision for the urban, Santa Cruz beach - which has remained virtually unchanged over the last 20 years reveals some interesting details. The project will require investment of just over 36 million euros, and an execution period of eight years. The 500page document suggests that a large urban park at the entrance to the beach will be created. Spaces will be made available for sporting activities and leisure areas, all surrounded by large gardens.

In addition, kiosks, showers and changing rooms, which have a uniform design and will be sited between the parking and the pedestrian promenade bordering the sand area, will be created. The latter will also be modified, enlarged and

landscaped to create a continuous, visual line from the water to the parking area. And where the Fishermen’s Association is located, there will be renovations to improve the existing landscape. The plan also details

other aspects of vital importance, including improved services on the beach, plus lighting upgrades on roads, urban parks and bike lanes. There will also be a new sanitation system, with several pumping stations installed.

Pay-as-you-learn plan at university

The new CC Galeón Outlet will open it’s doors tomorrow (Saturday)!

THE Canarian Government this week approved the fixing of public prices for university education over 2016/2017, and the tuition fees can be paid over six instalments if preferred. Obviously, students can make a one-off payment, or benefit from spreading the sum over a six-month period, rather than the previous four. The first payment must be made by 5th October, followed by the remainder, on the 15th of each month - barring January

Outlet opens in Adeje

Located in the heart of El Galeón, in Adeje, the new centre will have 25 shops, and a large Hiperdino and 465 parking places for shoppers. The press were given a sneak peak at a conference yesterday (Thursday) which was attended by Adeje mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Grupo Nº1 and Archigestión president Amid Achí Fadul, as well as Olivia Llorca, Marketing and Communications director for the Hiperdino group. Amid Achí Fadul said: “Here in Adeje we find it easy to pursue investment and growth opportunities, which become jobs. In this commercial centre we have created 300 direct jobs, which, added to the 600 in Siam Mall, is 900 new jobs in one year, and we hope to continue to grow”. He added: “As the local business communi-

ty knows, the local government in Adeje were always well disposed to facilitate new business opportunities in the borough and worked legally and efficiently to make investments possible, always looking for solutions to benefit society in general”. The mayor told press he was delighted that this new kind of Outlet centre was to be opened in Adeje, the first of its kind in Tenerife. “With this new commercial venture we continue our commitment to employment creation,” he added. “We acknowledge that the business sector needs to take risks with

investments but Adeje is a pioneering borough and has one of the lowest unemployment levels in Spain. Our work as borough representatives is to continue to develop initiatives that can guarantee people a quality of life with stability, personal growth, employment and peaceful conviviality.” The Hiperdino Marketing and Communications director made particular reference to the group’s adaption to client and customer needs and demands and pointed to the growth in their ecorange of food products, and those that were gluten and lactose free.

The CC Galeón Outlet opens from 10am, and the organisers have promised a fun family day filled with surprises. Shops in the centre include Guess, Sport Zone, Forecast, Via Franca, Encuentro Stock, Punto Roma, Desigual-Geox, Party Fiesta, The Mint Company, Queens, Shana, Yeyo Boutique, Walk it, Calzados Marypaz, Fund Grube-Let’s Outlet, JYSK, Mondi Disini, Peluquería Mónica y Jorge, Multiópticas Orotava, Koala and Fifty Factory, the first Cortefiel outlet store in the Canaries. Prince’s death teaches addict Chaka a lesson CHAKA Khan has gone into rehab because, she admits, she wants to carry on living after admitting her addiction to the same potent drug which killed her friend, Prince.

Yvonne Stevens, the Grammy award-winner’s sister, has also entered the rehabilitation and after-care programme.

American singer Chaka said in a statement: “The tragic death of Prince has had us both rethinking and re-evaluating our lives and priorities.” A post-mortem examination revealed that Prince died of a fentanyl overdose, and Chaka said: “We knew it was time to take action to save our lives. My sister and I would like to thank everyone for their support, love and prayers.” She scored a big

hit with her cover of Prince’s I Feel For You in 1984, and the two became good friends. The 63-year-old star apologised to fans because she will miss appearances over the summer, but added: “It is vital that I put my health and well-being first.” Prince died in April after overdosing on fentanyl, a potent opioid painkiller which can be up to 100 times stronger than morphine - and 50 times that of heroin!

Blind mice test not quite a great sight A LANDMARK procedure, in which blind mice had their sight restored, could offer hope to millions of glaucoma sufferers.

A team of scientists regenerated severed optic-nerve cables to reestablish a link between the eyes of the mice and their brains. Researchers believe the breakthrough could pave the way for the development of a treatment for glaucoma, which affects nearly 70 million people. The study was led by a Stanford University team, who induced a condition similar to glaucoma in the mice. The condition is caused in humans by excessive pressure on the optic nerve. Because cells in the retina, once damaged,

do not regenerate, it means that loss of vision is usually permanent. But when the mice were treated with a series of chemicals, alongside intensive exposure to high-contrast, visual stimulation, comprising constant images of a moving black-andwhite grid, the pathway was partially repaired. Andrew Huberman, an associate professor of neurobiology, said: “More than a third of the human brain is dedicated to the processing of visual information.

Over two-dozen brain areas get direct signals from retinal ganglion cells. “These areas are involved in not only what we typically think of as vision, but also circadian rhythms and mood. “When those cells’ axons are severed, it’s like pulling the vision plug right out of the outlet.” But although the mice’s vision was partially restored, the researchers say that the creatures failed tests which required finer visual capabilities.

Matador’s death leads to new ‘bullfight ban’ calls Taylor’s swift fortune TAYLOR Swift is now the highestpaid celebrity in the world after earning $170m last year, putting her well above Adele, Madonna, Rihanna and Katy Perry.

The American pop star’s huge earnings left Adele at No.9 on the Forbes list with $80.5m, Madonna at No.12 ($76.5m), Rihanna 13th ($75m) and Katy Perry at No.63 ($41m). The Shake It Off singer’s 1989 World Tour earned more than $200m last year. One Direction came second after earning $110m, which should tide them over while they enjoy a break from making music. Harry Styles is currently filming Christopher Nolan’s new film

Dunkirk, while bandmates Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Liam Payne are rumoured to be working on new music. Swift’s former partner, Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, pulled in $63m according to the list. Reality star Kim Kardashian, featured on the cover of the magazine, was 42nd on the list with earnings of $51m. Some 40% of her income came from her mobile game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, said Forbes. Kardashian shared a picture of her cover on Instagram with the caption: “Such a tremendous honour to be on the cover of @ forbes! I never dreamed this would happen and know my Dad would be so proud.” She added the hashtag: “#NotBadForAGirlWithNoTalent”

THE death of a young matador in front of a crowd on Saturday has fuelled more protests from Spain’s animal rights activists, who repeated calls for a total ban on bullfighting.

Víctor Barrio became the first professional torero to die in the ring in the country since 1985. He was gored by the bull known as Lorenzo in the thigh and chest in the eastern town of Teruel, in Aragon. The 29-year-old matador was pronounced dead after the animal’s horn pierced a lung and his aorta, the body’s main artery. Hundreds of people gathered for the funeral in his home-town Sepúlveda, in Segovia, on Monday. His death, and the news that the bull’s mother will be killed to sever the animal’s bloodline, prompted animal rights party Pacma to demand an end to the sport in the country. “We reject traditions based in violence, revenge and blood,” said Pacma in a statement. “Bullfighters say the mother of Lorenzo, now known as a ‘killer bull’ after ending the life of Víctor Barrio, will be sent to the slaughterhouse to ‘end the lineage’.” Pacma said no rite, tradition or custom, rooted in a series of deaths and nourished by blood and hatred, could be seen as healthy in any society.

The activist group’s statement added: “We know of only one ethical means to do away with all this: the total abolition of bullfights.” Barrio’s death was marked with a minute’s silence at Madrid’s Las Ventas bullring on Sunday. But while Mariano Rajoy, Spain’s acting Prime Minister, tweeted his condolences to the family, many took to social media to celebrate Barrio’s fate, and to attack bullfighting. The Guardia Civil used its Twitter account to warn that although such commentary was not a offence, it was ugly behaviour, adding: “Wishing for, or celebrating, someone’s death, isn’t a crime. But it shows nastiness.” Vicente Zabala de la Serna, bullfighting critic for El Mundo newspaper, said he could not understand the outpouring of hatred which greeted the death of a bullfighter of “admirable vocation and belief”. He said both Barrio’s family and Spain’s bullfighters, “who risk their lives on a daily basis”, were in tremendous pain - a pain compounded only by the spite exhibited online.” He added: “The way anti-bullfighting activists have behaved on social media has been

awful, shameful and absolutely inhuman.” “They talk about respecting the pain of animals, but they haven’t respected the death of a human being, or the pain of an entire family, who’ve had to read absolutely wretched messages on social media.” Barrio is the first professional matador to die in Spain since José Cubero, known as El Yiyo, was gored in Madrid in 1985. Seven years later, two banderilleros, whose job is to stick darts into the bull, were fatally gored in Seville. Despite bullfighting’s emblematic status in Spanish culture, many have called for an end to the tradition. The regional government of Catalonia banned bullfighting in 2010, while Pacma attracted almost 285,000 votes in last month’s general elections. A 28-year-old Spaniard died during a Saturday bull-run in the village of Pedreguer, near Valencia. According to the regional government, the man died after a bull’s horn pierced his lung and heart while he tried to help another runner. There were further injuries the same day at the San Fermín festival, famous throughout the world, in which

bulls and runners rush through the cobbled streets of Pamplona. A 33-year-old Japanese man was gored in the chest, a 24-year-old Spanish man in the arm, and 12 others sustained minor injuries. And on Monday in Pamplona, four people suffered bruises but no one was gored in the fifth running of the bulls, confirmed medical officials. More than 1,000 people took part in the run, which lasted three minutes. Many runners and several of the bulls slipped and fell during the crazed dash though the city’s narrow streets to the bullring. Four people were taken to city hospitals with contusions, and three of the four - two Spaniards, aged 42 and 22, and a 63-year-old American - were kept in, although their injuries were said to be minor. The nine-day fiesta, which ended yesterday (Thursday), became world famous with Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel “The Sun Also Rises” and attracts thousands of foreign tourists. In the nationally-televised runs, daredevils test their speed and bravery by racing with six fighting bulls and accompanying steer along a 930-yard street course to the city’s bullring. The bulls then face matadors and almost certain death in afternoon bullfights. Bullruns are a traditional part of summer festivals across Spain, and 11 people have been gored since the runs started last Thursday.

Spain-Gibraltar cop row SPAIN’S Foreign Ministry has lodged a “serious complaint” with the British ambassador about what it describes as reckless behaviour by a Gibraltar police-boat patrol toward a Spanish police vessel.

The Ministry told Ambassador Simon Manley that Gibraltar police had approached a Spanish police vessel twice at great speed, swerving away at the last second to avoid a collision. It added that the incident, which took place between Gibraltar and Spain, placed both crews at risk. The dispute is the latest in a long line of diplomatic spats over

the disputed British territory, which Madrid has long claimed should be returned to Spanish sovereignty. The Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “The RGP patrol boat, which was sailing at a high speed, diverted course just a few metres from the Spanish boat, causing a big wave that unsettled the Spanish police vessel.

“Its irresponsible and reckless manoeuvre created a significant, clear and sudden risk for the safety of both official boats and their crew.” It added that the patrol boat had made no effort to contact the Spanish vessel something the Royal Gibraltar Police has denied. The RGP insisted its vessel “maintained a safe distance at all

times while attempting to make contact with the crew (of the Spanish boat) to establish their intentions.” A spokesman for Britain’s Foreign Office, in response to the incident, said incursions by Spanish state vessels into British Gibraltar territorial waters “are an unacceptable violation of British sovereignty”. He added: “We will continue to use a

range of proportionate diplomatic and naval responses to incidents.” Spain, which ceded Gibraltar to Britain in 1713, has sought its return ever since. Last month, Spain proposed sharing sovereignty of Gibraltar in the wake of the EU referendum, after the territory voted overwhelmingly in favour of the UK remaining in the EU.

Rail networks open to cyber-attack war BRITAIN’S railway network is believed to have experienced at least four major cyber attacks over the last year.

And the digital systems controlling trains are vulnerable to hackers, who could cause injury or death in the real world, according to experts. Sergey Gordeychik, a security researcher at Moscow’s Kaspersky Lab, has discovered several weaknesses in rail infrastructure. He told Sky News: “Hackers can get access, not only to simple things like online information boards or in-train entertainment, but also to computer systems, which manage trains by themselves, manage signals, manage points and, in this case, if they

have enough knowledge, they can create real disaster related to train safety.” The four recent attacks on UK rail, discovered by Darktrace, a private security company which guards much of the UK rail network, are thought to be sponsored by nation states. Although hackers have infiltrated networks - including rail infrastructure itself - these

breaches have been exploratory rather than disruptive. “We see at the moment that state-sponsored attackers are already inside critical infrastructure,” said Mr Gordeychik. “So they have access, they monitor, they collect intelligence … but they don’t try to create a disaster. Why? I believe they don’t have the order at the moment. But in case of any war-

fare, maybe it can be an option to use cyber weapon against civil infrastructure. And this is scary.” As more devices are connected to the internet, digital attacks are leading to “real world” consequences. Last December, power stations in Ukraine were taken offline following a hack. And, according to a report by Verizon, specialists in safety servic-

Expectant mums wasting money on multi-vitamins P R E G NAN T women who spend at least £15 on multivitamins every month are wasting their money - because there is no evidence of a health boost for them or their babies.

Researchers have concluded that the “heavily marketed” products for expectant women, which often cost in excess of £15 a month, are an “unnecessary expense”. Instead, mothers are being urged to follow NHS recommendations by taking folic acid for the first trimester of pregnancy, as well as vitamin D, which can both be bought at a fraction of the cost of multi-vitamins.

A three-month supply of these tablets can cost as little as £5, which means parents could save more than £40 over that period. And adopting a healthy diet for mums-to-be is also recommended. The detailed research, published in the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin, was completed by experts assessing the evidence on the benefits of folic acid, vitamin D, iron, vitamins C, E and A, as well as multi-vitamins during pregnancy. A 60-day supply of folic acid can cost £2, as opposed to a 28-day supply of multi-vitamins for £15. Although substantial evidence suggested the use of folic acid could reduce the risk of conditions such as spina bifida, and “less-clearcut” evidence which indicated vitamin D was beneficial, there was

“no evidence” to support multi-vitamins. Such products often contain more than 20 vitamins and minerals, and some carry slogans to say they provide “all the essential nutrients for pregnancy”. The report authors said: “Much of the evidence for vitamin supplementation in pregnancy comes from studies carried out in low-income countries, where women are more likely to be under-nour-

ished or malnourished than within the UK population.” The Health Food Manufacturers’ Association has described some of the findings as “misleading”, because evidence suggests many women of childbearing age in the UK consume insufficient amounts of micro-nutrients such as iodine, iron and calcium. It added: “Ideally, we would all get sufficient nutrients from a healthy diet. But for a large proportion of the population, and for certain at-risk groups such as pregnant women, this is simply not the case. “For these groups, the belief that they can obtain all the nutrients necessary from the average UK diet poses a very real risk to the health of both mothers and their unborn children.”

es, hackers took control of a water treatment plant, changing the chemical make-up of the water. Professor David Stupples, an electronic warfare expert, told Sky News that a deadly attack would remain tricky, appealing to those with extreme motivation only. “What we have to worry about is terrorism,” he added. “Because the terrorist might want to attack the railway or, indeed, any of our infrastructure to cause death and mayhem, but also to make a name for himself, and make certain his terrorist organisation is known.” Network Rail is introducing the European Rail Traffic Management (ERTMS) system to the UK, as part of its “digital railway” plan to modernise signalling infrastructure. “When ERTMS comes

in, terrorist organisations will start viewing this as a possible target,” warned Prof Stupples. “As it rolls out across the country, it becomes more of a target.” Network Rail said: “Britain has the safest major railway in Europe, and cyber security is a key part of our plan for introducing digital train control technology. “Safety is our top priority, which is why we work closely with government, the security services, our partners and suppliers in the rail industry and security specialists to combat cyber threats.” A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “We keep rail security under constant review, and we are working with industry to ensure that all risks to the rail network, and other infrastructure, are minimised.”

Berlin police hurt in violent home protest BERLIN police say 123 officers were injured in clashes with leftist protesters over the redevelopment of a district in the east of the city.

About 3,500 protesters marched through Friedrichshain on Saturday, some masked and throwing missiles. And police believe it was the most violent in the past five years. Tensions have risen since moves began in June to evict squatters there, with Friedrichshain undergoing rapid renewal of lowerclass neighbourhoods in recent years. About 1,800 police were deployed at the protest, which began peacefully but escalated into violence, and 86 people were arrested. Squatters have refused to leave part of a block of flats at 94 Rigaer

Strasse and protesters, some of them masked, waved flares from the roof on Saturday night Since June, squads of police have been monitoring the building day and night, with helicopters circling overhead. Police fired tear gas as shop windows were shattered and their cars damaged. Many of the neighbours live in housing collectives and sympathise with the squatters, who see themselves as a left-wing alternative to gentrification and rising rents. During the protest, some neighbours beat spoons against pots, making a racket in support of the squatters.

By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct IN the aftermath of the Brexit Referendum, sterling saw a 2½-year low against the euro, which left the currency markets in a continued state of nervousness. The UK is now a nation divided as to whether the Leave result is a positive move for the country. Last week, Bank of England Governor Mark Carney released a further £150bn, enabling British banks to continue to lend in this uncertain market. He also said that the UK has “entered a period of uncertainty and

HUNDREDS of barristers have warned David Cameron that last month’s vote to leave the European Union was not legally binding - just days before he was “evicted” from No.10 Downing Street.

The result of the 23rd June referendum is “advisory” only, they said, and that the Government should launch an independent investigation into the benefits, risks and costs of Brexit before making plans. More than 1,000 barristers signed a letter to Mr Cameron saying that primary legislation would be needed before Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - which covers how EU members can leave - can be put into use. They say there is evidence that the referendum result “was influenced by misrepresentations of fact and promises that could not be delivered”. They added: “Since the result was only narrowly in favour of Brexit, it cannot be discounted that the misrepresentations and promises were a decisive or contributory factor in the result.” Unfortunately, the

significant, economic adjustment’’. Political and economic uncertainty continue to affect the Pound, with most of the Brexit leaders stepping down from their posts. The view was that the Bank of England would cut interest rates at its next meeting, held yesterday (Thursday). Hargreaves Lansdown said investors rated the possibility of a cut at 78%. Analysts Morgan Stanley said weakness of the Pound could actually be beneficial to the UK, while Goldman Sachs predicted sterling

would decline further against the US dollar in the next three months. Although the demand for sterling has reduced because of the current uncertainty, some believe that a weaker sterling will mean a boost in exports for the UK. However, this was not the case after the 2008 crisis, when the Pound decreased in value by 20%. Imports will become more expensive, leading to a price increase in shops. In the Eurozone, inflation is slowly moving back into a more positive area. Although unemployment went down

by 0.1%, and manufacturing data came back as positive, the Euro hasn’t gained any significant strength. Some economists predict that, long-term, Brexit will have more effect on the Euro than the Pound. What does this sterling weakness mean for property-buyers in the Canary Islands? Obviously, it means you are not going to get as many euros for your pound as you did before the Referendum. But what should be remembered is that although house prices in Spain have been recov-

swift elevation of Theresa May to Prime Minister on Wednesday, following the withdrawal of Andrea Leadson’s challenge, appears to have put paid to their hopes. Mrs May, who backed the losing Remain group, has spoken of how she will put her full weight behind the Brexiteers and unite the UK. Whether she takes note of the barristers and act accordingly remains to be seen. But the group of lawyers said the referendum did not set a threshold

necessary to leave the EU, unlike many other important polls, “presumably, because the result was only advisory”. There are also questions about the negotiating position of the UK after triggering Article 50: what happens if an agreement is not reached within the two-year limit, or the “emerging reality” that Article 50 negotiations will deal only with how the UK leaves the bloc, rather than any future economic relationships? The huge legal team say an investigation should take place because of these questions, “as a matter of urgency” to report back before the Parliamentary vote takes place. Philip Kolvin QC, who co-ordinated the writing of the letter, told Sky News that he didn’t feel they were overstepping the mark. He added: “In profound times of constitutional, social legal and economic crisis, it is important that we behave constitution-

ally and according to the rule of law. “I do not think it is good to be namecalling, telling people what they can and can’t say. In times of crisis, people often turn to lawyers to ask them how we should behave in society.” Aidan O’Neill, a constitutional and EU law specialist, who also signed the letter, said: “The Brexit referendum has made clear that the UK is not a united nation-state, but a divided state of nations. “But it has given no mandate or guidance as to what our nations’ future relationship might be with Europe, and with each other.” He added: “Precipitate or unilateral action by the UK Government to trigger Article 50 will simply further divide us.” Unless, of course, Prime Minister Mrs May has the strength of will and the powers of persuasion to unite the country, following the rapid departure of David Cameron, who was scheduled to step aside in October.

Pinewood’s perfect Pound! PINEWOOD Studios, which has announced record annual results, says the falling Pound will be good for business. And it should know after its reported profit before tax increased by 58% to £7.8m. The studios, best known for being home to the James Bond films, has continued to be at the forefront of the TV and film businesses, last year hosting productions of Spectre and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It said the falling Pound, following the UK’s Brexit, had made it more attractive to overseas customers. “In the context of our business, the decline in the sterling exchange rate is undoubtedly positive for our international customers,” said the company, based at Ivor Heath, Bucks. “We will continue to monitor sentiment around the issue going forward.” And Pinewood is not the only business saying it will benefit from the vote to leave the EU. Primark owner Associated British Foods said last week the lower pound would boost business. “It buys in euros, so the falling value of sterling will lift profits, meaning the company performs better than expected,” said a spokesperson. “Our outlook for this financial year has improved, and we no longer expect a decline in

adjusted earnings-pershare for the group for the full year.” Dixons Carphone has also brushed off referendum fears, saying that Brexit offered “opportunities for additional growth and to further consolidate our position as the leader in the UK market.” Fraser McKevitt, head of retail at market analysts Kantar Worldpanel, told Sky News the falling pound, and resulting price inflation, could help supermarkets return to growth. The UK’s so-called “big four” supermarkets Morrisons, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s - are currently trapped in a price war, which has been bad for profit margins. And there have been plenty of concerns from companies as well. Last week, Sports Direct said the effects of Brexit would hit it hard, from the falling pound to the fall in consumer confidence. It warned: “We expect gross margin to be impacted significantly by negative movements in exchange rates in 2017 and beyond, given the recent movements in the US Dollar, compared with the Pound.” And EasyJet, British Airways owner International Consolidated Airlines Group, and estate agent Foxtons have all issued profit warnings in the wake of the vote.

THE third annual instalment of the popular Cyder Cup golf tournament, which returns to Amarilla Golf Course, will be staged tomorrow (Saturday).

And defending champions Oasis Fm will be keen to complete a hat-trick against old foe Blacktower Financial Management, having won the first two challenges. This unique event has a two-man Texas Scramble format, with Ryder

Cup scoring. Every single hole counts, and the competition is fierce! The players, split into two teams, are paired in a match with similar-handicap golfers to create the perfect team event. Oasis Fm are again captained by Roscoe and Chris Elkington, while Blacktower Fm will be led by Adi Benson and Ally Kerr. Every hole counts because the scoring is one point per hole, so even in the latter holes, if players have lost their match, they can still claw back points for their team.

Chris said: “Everyone who plays the Cyder Cup just loves it! This format is completely different from the normal events and keeps it interesting right up to the final shot. And, as every hole counts, every player will influence the outcome: 80 golfers, two teams - and still Oasis Fm will win!” Ally told us: “It was heartbreaking to lose so narrowly last year and I can assure you this won’t happen again. I know I said that last time, but I really mean it! “I’ve recently followed Continued on page 37

Long Lost Family

Don't Miss...

Wednesday 20th July, ITV1, 21.00 This Episode features two stories of people looking to solve family mysteries: a daughter who missed out on a father’s love; and a woman looking to put an end to a secret that has haunted her family for over 50 years. Samantha is a 44-year-old mother of three who lives in Glasgow, Scotland. Samantha is longing to share her life with the father she has never known. “To meet my father now would be a miracle…just to be in my father’s arms…to have him hold me would be like a dream come true.” On a visit to Zurich, the city where her parents fell in love over 40 years before, Samantha recounts the events which led to her parents parting. Her mother, Alexandra was working in Zurich as a housekeeper when she met Jean Pierre Wandfluh, a young local man, and it was love at first sight. The romance was to be short-lived as after just a year Samantha’s mum got news that her own mother was terribly ill. Upon her return to her native home of Scotland, Alexandra discovered she was pregnant. When Jean Pierre learnt about this he wrote to her, asking her to return to Switzerland to raise their child. Samantha’s mother felt unable to leave her mother and decided to raise her daughter in Scotland without Jean Pierre. Samantha was brought up by her mother and although she had a very happy childhood, she never had a father figure as part of her life. It was when she was at school that the absence of her father really started to hit home. She found herself ridiculed by the other children simply because she did not have a dad: “There was a lot of nasty things being said”. Seeing how upset her daughter was, Samantha’s mother sat her down and told her that she did have a father and showed Samantha the first picture she had ever seen of him. For years the only connection Samantha had to her father was this single photo that she received from her mother: a picture of an enigmatic handsome young man. Samantha has always treasured it. “I was so happy to know who my father was”, she says. Over the years Samantha has never stopped thinking of her father and has done everything she could to look for him but always came up against dead ends. “There is another side of me I don’t know. I need to find him for me.” When Long Lost Family took up the trail, they wrote to every Wandfluh in the Swiss phonebook as it’s quite an unusual name. They managed to contact Jean Pierre’s nephew, David Wandfluh. Nicky travels to meet him in Biel, Switzerland, and at this meeting David reveals the tragic news that his uncle, Samantha’s father, passed away over 20 years ago. David takes Nicky to meet Jean Pierre’s surviving brother, Walter, and his daughter, Sybille, Samantha’s other cousin.

Real Stories With Ranvir Singh Thursday 21st July, ITV1, 19.30 Presented by Ranvir Singh and reporter Michael Underwood, this series tells the unique personal stories of people involved in extraordinary events that have changed their lives. Tonight, Ranvir has the first ever television interview with the tube station worker who saved lives and comforted the dying in an act of heroism during the 7/7 terror attacks. We meet Ben Smith, who’s aiming to run 401 consecutive marathons this year to help victims of bullying. And Michael reports on the tragic story of veterans who’ve fallen through the cracks since serving their country on the frontline.

One Night In 2012 - An Imagine Special BBC1, 22.30

London. The Summer of 2012. As rehearsals take place in a rainy Dagenham car park, Director Danny Boyle reveals a glimpse of his Opening Ceremony to the press. Some denounce it as the “Tellytubby Olympics” - others fear that it can never compete with the spectacle of Beijing. Everything pointed to an embarrassing failure. So how did one night in 2012 become ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’? This is the story of a unique night when the Brits began to believe in themselves again. A night which showed the country what it could achieve when extraordinary people pulled together. A night which went beyond everyone’s expectations. For the first time since that night, Danny Boyle and the creative team behind the ceremony reunite in the company of Alan Yentob to explain the thinking that went into creating one of the country’s finer moments. Fuelled by the volunteers, Boyle and his team assembled the building blocks of what should be celebrated. Out went the Empire, in came literature, music, humour, the NHS, the worldwide web: things we gave to the world rather than took from it. Between them they conjure the absurd scale of the ambition, (how to tell stories on such a vast stage), the obstacles they overcame, the doubts (Boyle never wavered), the chaos and the process that led to that the mass movement of thousands of people. Recounting tales of creating Pandemonium, the engineering genius behind the 40ft towers and the mayhem of perhaps “the biggest scene-change there’s ever been”, this is a funny emotional reunion. It was a night full of famous faces, from Shakespeare to Her Majesty the Queen, from Bond to J.K. Rowling. But at the core of Boyle’s vision were the thousands of volunteers who came together and gave Boyle’s vision form. This Imagine Special will give a voice to those volunteers, their stories forming the spine of the film. None of these people were professionals, yet they formed a bond that made the world sit up and take notice. This is a unique glimpse into the friendships that were forged, the talents that were discovered and the lives that were changed. It’s a tale of the transformative power of art.

ITV1, 20.00

Ray travels to the Ardeche, where miles of gorge and limestone cliffs characterise the region. He discovers a cave with a long history in the area and is given special permission to abseil in through the original sky facing entrance. Deep in the cave he finds a stunning array of stalactites and stalagmites, before crawling through narrow tunnels to see new chambers, sealed off from the public. Once back on land he starts out his journey down the Ardeche river by canoe. Along the way he meets local wildlife ranger Olivier, who shows him a Viperine, frogs and teaches Ray some the traditional uses of local plants. They climb high up the cliff face to find a cave used since prehistoric times and Ray finishes his journey watching beavers busy on the river. Ray explores the geography, flora and fauna of six dramatic French landscapes. The high mountain ranges of the Alps, the coastal waters of the Brittany, the chestnut forests of the Cevnnes, the caves and gorges of the Ardeche, the wet-lands of Camargue and the rolling lavender plains of Provence’s unique maquis landscape. Across the series Ray explores the dramatic physical geography of each region; its topography, its climate and its extreme weather conditions. He tracks down and identifies the key wildlife species that live there and how they have adapted. He introduces us to animals with an ancient history with the land such as wolves and vultures as well as more unexpected and exotic wildlife such as pink flamingos and dolphins.

The next morning, in her still empty bed, Steph contemplates life without Terry… Guilt ridden Kieren is distant from the chaos of the kids playing up before school. Nita is concerned – she knows something’s up. It’s been 3 weeks since the robbery/hit and run, and Dawn and Pauline visit Brian who is recovering in hospital. Brian shows Pauline the ring he meant to give her before the accident. A confident Steph walks out of the hairdressers with a new hair-do and bumps into Johnny, who invites her over to help him decorate. Back at Spake’s Butchers, Pauline arrives to find out that Brian is behind on their payments to the meat supplier and Pauline is left with a dilemma. When Stanley asks Dawn when she’s coming home, Dawn tells Stanley she and Russell are saving for their own place where he can come and visit. But Stanley is having none of it. It’s a dismal atmosphere at the Matlock’s with Hellie’s father annoyed she has abandoned uni-versity. It becomes clear Bunny and Hellie have kept back some vital information from him about why she left. A confused Dean overhears a conversation between Nita and Steph talking about Johnny. When Terry returns to take Dean out for the day Dean lets slip Mum has a date with a po-liceman. Later, when Steph arrives at Johnny’s ready for decorating Terry has followed her… As they get to work painting Johnny’s flat he proves good at avoiding Steph’s questions about his past. Nita is at home when she finds the money stolen from the bookmakers underneath the sink – she is furious at Kieren, but he tells her it’s Dougie’s money. Pauline makes a deci-sion about how deal with the late payments but she’s upset about it. Finding a quiet mo-ment on their own in Spake’s van, Dawn has a lightbulb moment – she works out a way she can help. Johnny walks Steph home where she is met by Joan, clearly annoyed at what she thinks she’s just seen. She tells Steph to stop this nonsense – marriage is about more than the odd indiscretion, after all, and Joan could have left Steph’s father on more than one occasion. Joan leaves, but her words have had an impact on Steph.

Over the course of the coming year, a group of 23 men and women attempt to start a new society from scratch. Fed up with our modern day reliance on consumerism, social media and disillusioned with 21st century life, they set out to build their very own Eden in the wilds of the Highlands, to see what happens when we start again. In order for the group to thrive and not just survive over the 12 months, they need to work together to build their own shelter, grow their own food and raise their own livestock. The people taking part in this unique social experiment offer a variety of skills - from doctors and vets to carpenters and chefs. They have no access to electricity, plumbing or the supermarket. The group take in with them only what they can carry and the basics needed to kick start their experience, including the tools of their trade.

New Zealand: Earth’s Mythical Islands

15th July - 21st July 2016

T ues d a

BBC2, 21.00

Isolated from the rest of the world since the time of the dinosaurs, New Zealand’s magnificent wildlife has been left to its own devices for 80 million years, with surprising consequences. Narrated by actor Sam Neill, this three-part wildlife series transports viewers to an exotic and mysterious island chain, revealing how the country’s rich, intriguing wildlife manages to survive. The first episode features New Zealand’s most ancient and weirdest of species, and brings to life the story of how their spectacular home was formed. Dinosaur-like reptiles still prowl here, insects have become giants, birds lose the power of flight and behave like badgers, and the people who settled here developed their own unique culture. Across New Zealand life battles the natural forces - which shaped its past and continue to drive life there today. One of the most geologically active countries on earth; it’s a beautiful but dangerous place to live, rocked by earthquakes, volcanic activity and a wild and wet climate. This episode reveals some unexpected and spectacular solutions; bustling penguin cities thrive in dwarf rainforests and strangler trees crack dry lava fields turning volcanic wasteland into an oasis full of life. Shepherds and their sheepdogs fly across vast mountainous landscapes in helicopters and dolphins have even developed their own leaping body language. On these mythical islands, the astonishing creatures and resilient people must rise to the challenges of their dramatic and demanding home.

ITV1, 20.00 Alan and his make-over team head to Bolton this week to surprise a 39-year-old RSPCA officer and turn her wasteland of a garden – the longest skinny plot they have ever tackled - into a spectacular animal friendly haven. Caroline Hall was ecstatic when she moved from her native Scotland to Bolton for her full time job as an animal charity inspector but at the age of 33, a near fatal spinal stroke turned her life upside down. Tragically this outdoors girl and life-long animal lover was left completely paralysed from the neck down. Against the odds the determined Scot learned to walk again with the use of sticks but is mostly confined to a mobility scooter. Because of these challenges her once beloved garden has become an inaccessible wilderness. With a clever design and some top tips, Alan and the team turn it into a garden that Caroline is not only free to move around in but one she absolutely falls in love with.

Michael Palin concludes his Himalayan trek. In Bhutan, Palin finds himself back in the land of yaks for a last look at the high Himalaya. Trekking to Chomolhari base camp he meets a nomad with a penchant for yak songs before heading down to Paro to witness the Buddhist festival or Tsechu. In a bar in Thimphu, he discusses reincarnation and the pursuit of happiness with Benji and Khendum, two of the king’s cousins, and en route to Bangladesh is taken by Benji to see the rare blackneck cranes. On his journey south through Bangladesh, Michael visits the shipbreaking beaches of Chittagong and grid-locked Dhaka. He meets a man who made a fortune in Birmingham in the poultry business, and a woman who lends money only to women. On a 1920s paddle steamer he is serenaded with the words of Bengal’s Shakespeare, and he completes his epic Himalayan journey aboard a fishing boat that carries him out into the Bay of Bengal and a westering sun.

Saving Lives At Sea BBC1, 21.00

The volunteers of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution staff more than 230 stations, covering even the most far-flung areas of Britain’s coastline - but the busiest station by far is actually miles from the sea, on the river Thames in central London. It was established after the Marchioness pleasure cruiser sank in 1989, claiming the lives of more than 50 people. While it might look benign, the Thames is actually one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the UK and the volunteers are called from their beds in the middle of the night to try and rescue two students who have jumped naked into the river while high on LSD. At the coast in Newquay the volunteers and coastguard helicopter are scrambled to try and help a 12 year-old boy on a cub scout ‘coasteering’ trip, who has fallen badly and has suspected spinal damage. Eastbourne lifeboat station covers a stretch of coastline which includes Beachy Head, so have had to become more familiar with death than most. Recovering the body of someone who has taken their own life is a task that no-one relishes but also a duty the volunteers see as an important service to the family who have lost a loved one - and an opportunity to reflect on what truly matters in their own lives.

Eat Well for Less BBC1, 20:00

The Thomas family. Gregg Wallace and greengrocer Chris Bavin help families across the UK sort food fact from fiction and eat well for less. Gregg and Chris are in Chelmsford, Essex to help the Thomas family, a couple whose completely different shopping styles are causing arguments in the supermarket aisles. Newlyweds Mandy and Adie have four children between them. Brand-loving Mandy admits to having ‘champagne taste with a lemonade income’ - she never says no to the kid’s food requests and, as a result, they go through 70 bags of branded crisps a week. Adie, however, thinks budget versions are just as good. Mandy also relies on convenience microwave meals whereas Adie likes to cook from scratch, leaving this couple completely at loggerheads. Can Gregg and Chris help them find a middle ground and potentially save them thousands a year?

When Charlie gets thrown out of his lodgings, Pam plays transSamaritan and offers him Leo’s room. Judy and Leo go on a double date with Jackie and Dean... and Charlie. The Refugee Camp: Our Desert Home

T h u r s d a

BBC2, 21.00

What do a professional wrestler, a midwife, a baker, a wedding shop owner, one day-old twins and a teenage journalist have in common? They are all residents of a unique desert city in Jordan called Zaatari. But Zaatari is no ordinary city - it’s a refugee camp and home to some 80,000 Syrians who have fled the bombs and bullets of Syria’s civil war. What was once a temporary camp has now become a city the size of Bath. The Refugee Camp: Our Desert Home gets under the skin of this incredible and surprising metropolis - a place of huge logistical challenges and extraordinary human stories. The presenters - Anita Rani (pictured) A&E Doctor Javid Abdelmoneim and hostile environment expert Ben Timberlake - immerse themselves in the life of the camp, reporting from behind the scenes and meeting the families who call Zaatari home. Originally just a few hundred tents, it now has 24,000 homes with a busy shopping street, hospitals and schools and like any other city on earth, Zaatari has births, deaths, marriages and everything in between. In this episode, Anita tackles the logistical feat of providing water in the middle of a desert, while Javid meets some of the children recovering from injuries of war and Ben does the bakery night shift to find out how 90,000 loaves are baked every day to feed the camp. Anita and Javid are invited to a wedding, and with around half of the population in the camp under 18, Ben finds out how war has affected their education.

In the second episode, Sam describes the unusual set-up after Patricia moved into their home. She says: “There was like almost this politeness of it being perfectly normal as to what was going on. You know, Patricia used to walk around our home topless, flaunting all. My mother by then was desperately trying to save her marriage. We actually had Patricia completely overtaking what my mother had.” Mark is intrigued to discover reports that in late 1986, someone called Carole Packman was working in Canada - and Russell was there with her. Ex-pat Tony Stocks knew both Russell and Carole before her disappearance, and he met Russell afterwards. He says: “I did ask him at that time what had happened to Carole. He said ‘Oh, she’s off working in Italy somewhere.’ And I half jokingly said, ‘Oh we thought perhaps you’d done away with her.’ He said ‘Oh, that would have been a good idea.’” He had brought his girlfriend Patricia with him, who got a job under the name Carole Packman. Tony says: “I understand that Patricia also got a job, where Carole had worked in the past… She worked there as Carole.” But someone noticed Patricia wasn’t Carole and reported her to the authorities, who ordered her to leave the country. Mark writes to Patricia, asking for her account of what happened. When Anthony Hackett-Jones, Russell’s solicitor and close friend, who knew both his wife Carole and his mistress Patricia, was asked to organise a sailing trip for Russell, Patricia and a friend called Christine Dwyer, he was happy to help. He and Russell argued once they got to Guernsey to moor up for the night, says Anthony, about Russell’s desire to continue sailing. Later, Patricia banged on his door and said Russell had decided to set sail, he says. Even later that night, he tells Mark, he heard from Patricia again. He says: “I came to and Patricia was having a bit of a hysterical fit. She’d lost Russell. Where was he and had he gone over the side. She was screaming. So I put something on and came up. Her story was that he’d been up here and she’d been down below, and then she popped her head up to see how he was getting on, and he wasn’t there.”

Cyder Cup

15th July - 21st July 2016

37 CW

chase Cyder Cup hat-trick Continued from page 20. Northern Ireland in Euro 2016, which has given me the inspiration to win this event. It will definitely be third-time-lucky for Blacktower Financial Management on Saturday afternoon.” Roscoe countered: “I think Ally must have a had a bit too much of the wine in France. Just like Northern Ireland, his Blacktower boys are booked

for glorious failure. “Everything comes in threes, and I don’t see anything stopping Oasis Fm from winning the Cyder Cup a third straight time.” The tournament returns to Amarilla Golf Course, which was designed in the 1980s by Donald Steel. The course hosted a European PGA Tour event in 1990 and has welcomed numerous champion golf-

ers since. This year’s Masters winner, Danny Willett, played a couple of rounds at the course a few years ago as part of a training regime. The Cyder Cup gets underway at 9.30am with a shotgun start and matches on all 18 holes. Afterwards, the players will enjoy a buffet and drinks at the Terrace Bar before the presentation.

About Amarilla Golf

In the southern coast of Tenerife…just bordering the sea, we find Amarilla Golf and country club. From the course you will enjoy the incredible views of the majestic mount Teide.

During your round you are surrounded by a broad variety of typical Canarian flora. The designer of the course, Donald Steel, was able to take advantage of the beautiful contrasts of the island to achieve a varied course between ravines and the Atlantic Coast. From the first tee, the player discovers the spectacular ocean views. The most impressive part of the course reaches its peak at the 5th hole. This is truly a gem for golf lovers where the sea becomes a fairway, making it necessary to cross it in order to reach the green. The facilities include: driving range, putting green, pro-shop, equestrian centre and club house with tennis courts, swimming pool, bar and restaurant. It was inaugurated in 1989, and one year later Amarilla Golf hosted the second edition of the Tenerife Open, which is part of the European P.G.A. tour Rules of Play 1.Two teams each consisting of 50 golfers. 2.Shotgun start, with teams doubled up on each par 5 and the long par 4’s where required. 3.A pairing from each main team will play against each other. 4.Handicaps will be matched as closely as possible, with players competing in the following bands against each other: a. 0 -5 b. 6 – 11 c. 12 – 16 d. 17 – 21 e. 22 – 28 5.Players may play in a pairing with a player from a band one step higher or lower than each other, as it is the combined total of the 2 handicaps that matters. E.g: a 19 and a 14 handicapped player, could play against 2 x 16’s. 6.The format will be ‘Two Ball Texas Scramble’ i.e. the best positioned ball will be nominated and play will continue from there. 7.8 drives from each player must be used with two wild cards allowed. 8.Each pairing will mark their own scores and also the scores of their opponents, including indicating drives used. The pairs will then compare the cards at the end of the round and sign them to say they are in agreement. 9.The pairing with the lowest score on each hole will win a point. If the scores are level then each pair will be awarded half a point. Each individual contest is played over all 18 holes and players must complete their round regardless of the score in ‘their’ match. There are two reasons for this. Firstly there are prizes for the best overall pairing score, so please keep a record of your shot total as well as the match score. Secondly the Cyder Cup is decided on points scored on every hole. This means no match can finish early if there was, say a 4 & 3 scenario, as there are still points to be won for both sides in the grand make up of the Cyder Cup. At the end of your match you scoring for the Cyder Cup for example would be Oasis Fm 8 Blacktower FM 10. 10.The scores from every game will be added together and the main team with the highest total will be the winners. 11.Each pairing has to also keep track of their ‘shots’ score as there are prizes for lowest score with & without handicaps. 12.If a player is in contention on one of the nearest the pin holes or the longest drive hole, it will be verified and be agreed with the opposing pairing. A member of the opposing pairing will sign the relevant distance sheet. 13. Please note that players for a particular team are on a first come basis, so we reserve the right to allocate you to a particular team if necessary due to space or handicap.

It’s heaven-scent Dublin By Vanessa Vee ONE of the best weekend breaks to enjoy, arguably, has to be in the Emerald Isle - namely Dublin, where the Temple Bar is an absolute must!

It’s a pretty, cobblestoned, fairy-lit district, crammed with bars, restaurants, traditional Irish pubs and, of course, not an Irish person anywhere in sight. The area caters for foreign perceptions of conventional Irish culture - and it shows: populated with hens and stags and charging extortionate prices for drinks in some bars. Once you accept that 15 euros is reasonable for a pint of Guinness, and a vodka and coke, you know there is something deeply wrong!

However, the atmosphere is so much fun: constant live music streams out of every door and everyone, whatever the age, is

highly entertained. Just remember to pace yourself unless, quite literally, you fancy blowing all your spending money in one night.

A visit to Dublin without encountering the tourist trail would just not be a visit to Dublin! The Guinness storehouse calls … to expe-

rience its seventh-floor gravity bar. The tourist trail is surprisingly informative and inter-active, with its weirdest additions comprising a giant clock replica, to which visitors apparently flocked in the Fifties, and aroma centres full of the various scents detected in Guinness. There’s Trinity College, too, with its grand square, and, round the corner, Oscar Wilde’s childhood home. There is also a huge selection of restaurants, in which traditional Irish fayre just has to

be sampled, including, of course, a portion of Irish stew. Just like any other great city, this trip barely scratches the surface of the vast array Dublin offers, which is why many people return again and again. If you’ve never had the opportunity, then grab it right now! Life is for living, and travel is the only thing costing money that actually makes you become a richer person. Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team have packaged up a great weekend break to Dublin in late September, with other dates available on request. It is based on two people sharing, flights from Tenerife and a central Dublin hotel on Temple Bar for three nights, from only 490 euros per person with daytime flights, or slightly cheaper with evening flights. Contact the Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team on 922 751 867 or email travel@tenerifesunshine.com for more information and reservations.

GUYS … GET SALON SAVVY

Thumbs and nails keep kids healthy

By Carl Pattison

By Val Sainsbury

CONFUSED? It seems that guys get lost when choosing the right styling product for their hair. Either it’s too greasy, too sticky or offers no hold.

WE all have mixed opinions, when it comes to children sucking their thumbs. Many parents do all they can to dissuade their offspring from indulging, while others don’t see a problem with it,

So here’s my guide as to what you should use and why. Waxes: whether they are soft, hard or matte, they are used, mainly, on shorter hair, to texturise or slick. Soft wax is better used with finer hair that requires no hold. Hard wax will give hold, but be less shiny. For a more-natural look, try “matte wax”, which gives no shine, but produces a great lasting hold. Pomade: This is a fine, foamy, creamy product that gives little-or-no hold, yet smooths the hair, giving it a natu-

ral sheen. It is great for heavier hair that needs slightly taming. Stickier products: I’m talking about putties and texturising waxes, which will create lift and volume to your hair, and they’re ideal for flattening and roughing-up the texture. I have ignored gel because, nowadays, it is rarely used as it can look

stiff and crispy. It’s not really “in” with men’s cuts at the moment, but it’s great if you want to slick it out of the way. When you’re next looking for a wonder product to recreate that salon look, ask your stylist for advice. Don’t just grab what’s on the shelf - it may not be what you’re looking for.

YOUR TIME TO SHINE By Carl Pattison

ONCE thought of as being for the colder seasons only, metallics have shown their true colours during the summer months, too.

If they have that “metallic touch”, a shorter cocktail dress, or even a sheer top, will re-

ally stand out from the crowd. You don’t have to go overboard with this effect - something simple on a structured outfit will look amazing. Anything from metallic primary colours, such as oranges, greens and blues, will give you a blaze of colour. Golds and silvers, and especially bronzes, look the best because they truly give off the light.

Don’t go for sparkle over metallics: they are supposed to be subtle shine, not dazzling. And keep the effect to just one of your items, such as the top or skirt, unless you’re opting for a dress. Teaming up a metallic item with a simpler, “more-matte” colour will give an optimum effect. This look is supposed to be muted, and not “in your face”. Look out for metallics on sheer fabrics, skinny jeans, and, of course, your accessories. Team it all up with a combining bag, to set off your own, metallic look. You don’t have to scour the shops, either. This summer season, metallics will be in, so they are bound to be carried through the winter fashions, which should be out any time now. Metallics look good through all the age groups, so it’s a plus for everyone. Get out there and hunt yours down, because now it’s your time to shine.

My two sons spent many happy hours, thumbs in mouths, for several years. Their teeth are straight, and they had no problems with speech development. And, now, a 30-yearlong study has shown that young children who suck their thumbs or bite their nails - may be less likely to develop allergies later in childhood. Although the results do not imply that kids should take up these habits, the findings suggest that they help to protect against allergies, and this persists into adulthood. “Many parents discourage these habits, and we do not have enough evidence to advise that they change this,” said Dr Robert Hancox, an associate Professor of Respiratory Epidemiology at the University of Otago in New Zealand. “We certainly don’t recommend encouraging nail-biting or thumbsucking, but, perhaps, if a child has one of these

habits and it is difficult for him/her to stop, there is some consolation in the knowledge that it might reduce the risk of allergies.” The researchers looked at data from an ongoing study of more than 1,000 children, born in New Zealand, in 1972 or 1973. The parents were asked about their children’s thumb-sucking and nailbiting habits four times, at the ages of 5, 7, 9 and 11 years. The children were tested for allergies, using a skin-prick test, when they were 13, and again at 32. Of the children who had sucked their thumbs - or bitten their nails - 38% had at least one allergy. Of those who hadn’t, this number was higher, at 49%. The link between these childhood habits and a lower risk of allergies was still present among the study participants, even at 32. It persisted, even when the researchers took into account potentially-confounding factors that may also affect a person’s risk of allergies, such as whether their parents had allergies, whether they owned pets, whether they were breast-fed as infants

and whether their parents smoked. In addition, the kids who both sucked their thumbs and bit their nails at a young age were even less likely to have allergies at 13, compared with those who had just one of the two habits. The new results are in line with the findings of another study, which found that children whose mothers sucked the kids’ dummies clean, had a lower risk of developing allergies. “Although the mechanism and age of exposure to pathogens [germs] are different, both studies suggest that the immune response, and risk of allergies, may be influenced by exposure to oral bacteria or other microbes,” the researchers wrote. The new findings also lend support to the socalled hygiene hypothesis, which holds that environments which have too little dirt and germs may make children more susceptible to certain conditions, including allergies. It seems that exposure to microbial organisms influences our immune system, and makes us less likely to develop allergies.

Design your own sofa! By Miruna Voicu THE sofa is a very important part of the home in any country, but, perhaps, more so here in Tenerife!

Although we tend to spend more time outside because of the balmy evenings, the sofas here need a lot of thought put into them. All furniture in Tenerife needs to be strong, and resistant to stains such as sun-tan lotion, perhaps more so than in the UK. If you rent out your holiday home, you can expect a great deal of traffic through your property. Unfortunately, when people are on holiday, they tend not to take care of your belongings as well as you might like. As this is a holiday environment, most of the sofas are beds as well, because this obviously

increase the occupancy of your property. For example, a one-bedroom property can sleep four people rather than two. You should give a good deal of consideration to

your sofa-bed. Gone are the days of the old, pine sofas, which slid out from underneath the main sofa, and lumpy mattresses, with springs sticking out!

Today’s sofa-beds are completely different, with smooth, strong mechanisms and memory-foam mattresses. There are two main types of sofa-beds:

those where the cushions have to removed when you pull out the bed, and those where they stay in place. The ones which have a handle between the

back cushions, where the bed can be pulled out without making, first, any adjustment to the sofa, are the best option. These are slightly more expensive. Memory-foam mattresses make sleeping on these sofa-beds a pleasure. If you look at readymade sofas, they might be too big, too small, not comfortable enough as a sofa … the list is endless. You will find that you are making compromises. The bed mechanism is a fixed unit, sizewise, but it is possible to make adjustments to the hardness or softness of the cushions, the width and shape of the arms, and the height of the back, for example. It’s like designing your own sofa, and that’s before you even think about colour, pattern and material. And, they’re not nearly as expensive as you might imagine! *All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo, with free, no-obligation quotes.

Blaring music sounds kids’ danger warning By Val Sainsbury

MANY youngsters could be deaf by the time they’re 40 because the music they listen to using earbuds is turned up much too loud.

Soaring numbers of teenagers are being diagnosed with tinnitus, a permanent ringing or hissing sound in your ear, which is a key symp-

tom of hearing loss. It is usually common among older people, but a new paper published in Scientific Reports says the condition is becoming more prevalent in younger groups, because the youngsters will listen for hours to loud music through earphones or earbuds. Worryingly, though, they do not seem bothered about getting the condition checked out by a doctor. Following reports and

studies into teenage tinnitus, a team at the University of Sao Paulo’s Medical School used an otoscope to examine the ears of 170 students, aged 11-17. They also interviewed the students about tinnitus, asking whether they had experienced it in the last 12 months and if so, what was the volume, duration and frequency. Some 54.7% said had experienced tinnitus, and the majority report-

ed listening to loud music on a regular basis. Tanit Ganz Sanchez, the school’s associate professor of otolaryngology, said: “This level of prevalence is alarming. “If this teen generation continue to expose themselves to very high noise levels, they’ll

probably suffer from hearing loss by the time they’re 30 or 40.” Tinnitus is caused by damage to cochlear hair cells in the inner ear, which stretch and contract in accordance with sound-induced vibrations. Very loud noises - at a club or played over

headphones - overload these cells, leaving them temporarily or permanently damaged. The damage forces other parts of the ear to overwork to compensate for the loss of function, causing tinnitus and, eventually, chronic hearing loss. Dr Sanchez warns that these teenagers will damage their cochlear hair cell synapses permanently if they continue blasting music from now until the age of 20-25. But the increasing rate of diagnoses shows no sign of letting up because teenagers do not seem as concerned about the condition as adults. “We found that adolescents perceive tinnitus very often,” said Dr Sanchez. “But unlike adults, they don’t worry about it and don’t complain to parents or teachers, for example.” He added: “As a result, they aren’t seen by a doctor or hearing specialist, and the problem can become chronic.”

Live Arico news

Website alive and kicking WELCOME to our new website www. livearico.com for Live Arico Pet Animal Welfare Supporters! Over the next few weeks and months we will be adding more items. Top-Square bash By popular demand we find ourselves back at the Top Square on San Blas on Friday, 29th July, from 8pm. Usual suspects Suzy Q and Colin Stevens will be hosting and performing. We’re in the process of fixing the entertainment line-up, so watch this space. In any case, pop it in your diaries because it’s always a belting night. Dog of the Week Carlito is a young male, aged around 18

months, who we found abandoned with a horrendous leg injury, possibly from a hit-and-run. We have had that fixed and, although he’s a bit wobbly, he is young and strong and will recover. He needs some physiotherapy, which we will cover and organise. What he needs most, though, is a special

home, where he will be loved forever. He is a medium-sized Spaniel cross and very loving. Call Sue on 629 388 102 for more information. Cube race event On Saturday, 13th August, we will be doing something a little different at the Cube, Pueblo Canario. Apart from live entertainment, there

will be some “horse-racing” thrown in, so come along, back your favourites and help our dogs at the same time. Our Charity Shops There are plenty of bargains for all, so have a good root around at any of our three shops: *San Eugenio, opposite Hotel La Nina, at las Carabelas near Amandas Bar. Open MondaySaturday (10am-4pm) *Los Cristianos, Calle Revron, near Thistle and Dragon Bar and playpark. Open daily (10am-4pm) *Golf del Sur, Golf Park, just before the lottery kiosk. Open Monday-Friday (10am-to 6pm), Saturday (10am-4pm), Sunday (10.30am-3.30pm) Save them for us! Don’t throw things away! Call 629 388 102 and we’ll sell your unwanted items to help the dogs.

It’s President Susan again

SAN Miguel Lions Club’s Susan Solomon has been installed as new President at the Chicken Shack restaurant in Costa del Silencio.

Retiring President Jackie presented Susan with the highest Lions’ award of all - a Melvin Jones Fellowship which makes the Club extremely proud. Jackie then handed over the Chain of Office to Susan, who has worn it twice before in recent years.

One more presentation, Lion of the Year, which is voted for by Club members, went to Jose Luis Lopez Rodriguez, who joins past Lions Yvonne, Susan and Ralph Solomon in holding the title. Ralph, current Secretary and Social Secre-

tary, said: “The evening was a tremendous success, with wonderful food and entertainment. “On behalf of our Club, I thank all those who came along and enjoyed themselves, and everyone involved in making it a night to remember.”

Cuban Cardinal arrives in Adeje Jaime Ortega Alamino will host a public meeting on Saturday in the CDTCA and celebrate mass in Los Olivos later that evening.

The Archbishop Emeritus of Havana, Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino, will visit Adeje this Saturday where he will hold a public audience and concelebrate a mass in Los Olivos, invited by the parish and the Los Olivos fiesta commission. The Cardinal, who retired from active religious duty earlier this year, will be remembered as a man who worked tirelessly to help open up the Cuban regime with representations to the Castro brothers on behalf of jailed political activists and on other issues. He is considered a person of enormous relevance in the Catholic Church and has been close to the current and past two popes, and intervened to help make possible the visits of Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis to Cuba. Politically too he has played an important part. During negotiations to renew diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, Cardinal Ortego, with-

out public announcement, visited the White House and hand-delivered a letter from Pope Francis to President Obama. He also took part in peace talks between the Colombian government and the Farc rebels. Born 81 years ago in Matanzas, he is an electrical engineer by trade. He was ordained in 1985 and 11 years afterwards was made a bishop, and continued to rise through the ecclesiastical ranks. During the time of Pope Benedict, as is practise, at the age of 75 he offered his retirement as Archbishop, but neither Benedict nor Pope Francis were inclined to accept his resignation and he undertook a number of special missions on their behalf, in El Salvador and in Quebec. His resignation was finally accepted in April of this year. He has been invited to address audiences all over the world and has been awarded doctorates by many prestigious universities. During his visit to Adeje he will host an open meeting with the public in the Costa Adeje Centre for Tourism Development (the CDTCA), at 12.30pm. That afternoon he will take part in mass in the Los Olivos parish church at 7pm and then in the Virgen del Carmen procession.

Accion del Sol news

Making a splash A TOTAL of 22 volunteers from Holland and Belgium spared time from their holiday last week to make some dogs extremely happy with a stroll down to the sea, a cool paddle … and an abundance of tender, loving care. It means so much to our dogs at the refuge to spend quality time with our volunteers, so please come along and make one or two very happy. Accion resident Timo, loved by everyone who meets him - especially visiting schoolchildren - was found to have two tumours. Happily, he has them removed and is on the road to recovery from his operation, and we are so happy because he is an extra-special dog. We had a lovely surprise last week when two large boxes arrived from Germany. They were sent by Accion supporters Kathrin and Dino and were full of much-needed items for the dogs. Cool heads needed With the high summer temperatures now upon us, keep your pets safe by ensuring they have plenty of shade and cool

water. A frozen cool-box ice-block in a bucket of water should suffice, or add a handful of ice cubes. Avoid walking your dog on pavements so they do not burn their pads. And never, ever leave your pet in a car because the inside can get extremely hot, and quickly! Leaving your window open, or covering the windscreen, hardly cools down the vehicle. If you spot a dog locked in a car during the hot weather, please contact the local police immediately … you might just save its life. Healthy and hearty We still have 200 dogs looking for new loving

homes, so please pop in for a visit if you are looking to adopt a dog. Every dog is sterilised or castrated, microchipped, inoculated, heartworm-free and passported. This reassures their new owners that they have a clean bill of health before leaving our refuge. Your help needed Please call the refuge on 922 778 630 if you can lend a hand in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. Email the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del SOL.

Cats Welfare news

Overlooked, yet not over the hill AS your cat enters its golden years - they are generally considered geriatric from around 12 - it will need some extra understanding for a changing lifestyle. There are lots of simple steps to take to ensure the latter years of your cat’s life are comfortable and happy. Ageing Factors: *Activity levels decrease and muscle-tone reduces *Appetite and/or fluid intake may change *Vision and/or hearing may not be as acute *Bowel and urinary system functions may change *The immune system may weaken *Light sleep may increase, but deep sleep decreases

*Coat condition may deteriorate *Age-associated disorders may develop, such as arthritis, diabetes, hyperthyroidism or renal impairment Many owners view ageing as a “normal” process and feel that nothing will help their cat. And some worry about mentioning problems they’ve noticed in their older cat because they fear the vet will say it’s serious, or that the cat may need to be put down. However, these concerns are often unfounded, and your vet is there to help wherever he/she can. Talk to your vet to discuss any concerns you may have. It is so important to take your older cats to

see the vet regularly to ensure they are not suffering - or in hidden pain - because there are lots of treatments available for many of the issues. And you’ll want them to enjoy their golden years. Preventative healthcare Elderly cats usually need to be taken to the vet for a health check more often than younger, healthier cats, particularly If they have any age-associated symptoms or diseases. Your vet will advise you how frequently they need to be seen, and regular weight-checks are also important, as are keeping up regular booster vaccinations. That’s because cats’ immune systems can weaken with age.

Feeding requirements There is a variety of senior diets available to provide balanced nutrition, aimed specifically for older cats. Always ensure that fresh water is available in various locations throughout the home, including upstairs and downstairs. Provide smaller meals little and often. Monitor your cat’s appetite closely because it can decrease or increase, depending on a variety of health factors. If your cat’s sense of smell reduces, this can lead to a decrease in appetite. You can try warming the food, which will increase the smell and encourage feeding. Grooming Older cats experienc-

ing stiffness may find it more difficult to wash and groom, so their coats may be in poor condition. You might need to help by grooming your cat gently with a soft brush. Check their claws regularly because they may have difficulty scratching to keep their claws in shape. As cats get older, their claws can become thicker and longer. Be careful that their claws don’t curl into their pads. Staff at your vets can advise you how to look after their coat and claws. We are often asked: “Where can I go to view the cats and kittens?” But, sadly, we don’t have a refuge and most are in foster homes, so

it depends on what you are looking for. All adult cats currently available are on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife/pets where you will find lots of information and pictures. As for kittens, many are also in foster care. But here in the South, we do have kittens for viewing in Don Perro pet shop in Las Chafiras, and in Yaiza’s veterinary practice in Los Cristianos. Opening times and maps are on our website www.catswelfare -tenerife/ourvets. In the North, kittens can be seen in the Kiwoko pet shop in the El Trompo commercial centre, just outside Puerto de la Cruz.

By Roscoe PORTUGAL were crowned Euro 2016 champions last weekend in a final which pretty much summed up the tournament.

It featured bland, tepid, defensive, fear-filled

football, punctuated by one moment of brilliance. Or one goalkeeping error, depending how you look at football. This tournament was swollen to 24 teams and boy, did it show! All

those early, forgettable group matches just to lose eight teams. It was brilliant for the smaller nations and they will talk about this tournament for years to come. But is that a good

enough reason to adopt this format in future tournaments? The genie is out of the bottle and there is no chance of going back to 16 teams. The irony, of course,

is that under the old system, Portugal would have been knocked out in the group stages. So who lit up France? In a tournament short of attacking flair, this was one for the unsung

heroes. Half-a-dozen goalies caught the eye, and some of the defending was out of the top drawer. But there can only be 11 players in the team of the tournament.

there for all to see. It’s not always about making a challenge. Sometimes a defender should guide an attacker into either making a mistake or going somewhere he doesn’t have to go. Bonucci is a master at that. Next time you see him play, watch what the striker does, and how many times play gets broken up when he is in the vicinity.

Jerome Boateng (Germany)

GOALIE

Michael McGovern (Northern Ireland)

The Cinderella Man. Released by Hamilton at the end of the season, he came into France as a nobody, even though he had been a key player in the qualifying. He was nothing short of a revelation in the group stages. It wasn’t just his shot-stopping because McGovern commanded the area, marshalled the defence and gave his side the confidence to push forward. Portugal’s Rui Patricio had a fine final, while Poland’s Fabianski and France’s Lloris did little wrong. But the star was McGovern and his longterm reward will be a big-wage move, possibly to Burnley … and a place in NI folklore.

There are more Germany players in this list than from any other side, which kind of shows who were the best team. They had the best defence and, in Boateng, the best defender. There is no coincidence that they went out, only when he was in the dressing-room injured. He has come on a ton in the last season. He looks stronger, is better positioned and now has a range of passes that wouldn’t look out of place in the Barcelona midfield.

This was actually a tournament where the leftbacks shone. Almost the forgotten position, plenty caught the eye in France. Guerreiro improved match to match. The French-born 22-year-old was outstanding against Wales, and gave as good as he got against Sissoko in the final. He nearly won it, too, only for his free-kick to thump off the crossbar. Borussia Dortmund have an outstanding scouting system, and they showed that in May when they bought Guerreiro for nine million euros from Lorient. It looks the steal of the summer.

MIDFIELD

DEFENDERS

Toni Kroos (Germany)

Joshua Kimmich (Germany)

The 21-year-old was nothing short of a revelation. It’s amazing to think that two seasons ago, he was a centre-back at Leipzig, and he spent the last campaign as a holding midfielder for Bayern Munich. Kimmich is a natural right-back and is, rightly, being labelled as the new Phillipp Lahm.

Raphaël Guerreiro (Portugal)

Leonardo Bonucci (Italy)

The Italian back-three were mustard, and Bonucci gets the nod by a whisker. Like Boateng, he has worked on his core duties, and the improvement is

Kroos is a wizard. I could end it right there. He is the glue in the Germany team. Always an eye for a pass, he never stops moving. There is no point marking him. Just put on a tin hat and pray. If it were not for this next guy, he would have been my player of the tournament.

Ex-England star loses ‘sex’ appeal ADAM Johnson, the ex-England footballer jailed for child sex offences, has lost his appeal against the conviction, according to his sister.

The former Sunderland player is serving six years for engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan. His sister, Faye, posted a message on Twitter, saying: “Absolutely devastated that the single judge has rejected my brother’s appeal against sentence and conviction. “But I can assure every supporter that it has made me stronger and I will never give up.” The trial of the 28-year-old midfielder-

cum-winger, at Bradford Crown Court, heard that he had kissed and sexually touched the girl in his Range Rover, in a se-

cluded spot in County Durham. Faye Johnson, who set up a Facebook appeal, added: “Also, my appeal page has been

temporarily removed, but will be back up and running very soon with the link to my website. “Thank you to everyone for your continued

Aaron Ramsey (Wales)

The fact he is in and not Gareth Bale, shows how big a tournament he had. And when he is not playing, there is no doubt Wales and, for that matter, Arsenal, suffer. Unplayable against Belgium, he took himself to the next level. Now a member of the world-class club, it will be interesting to see if the Spanish giants come calling.

support daily. It means a lot and keeps me going.” Johnson played for Sunderland and Manchester City and won 12 England caps in what appeared to be a budding international career. At the trial, Judge Jonathan Rose said he was satisfied the girl, who was besotted with Johnson, had suffered “severe psychological harm” and that the footballer had taken advantage of “a young teenager’s adoration of a successful celebrity”. Johnson was also arrested for being in possession of extreme pornography, and pre-trial hearings heard that police found medicines in a safe when he was arrested, indicating that he may have been suffering from sexually-

transmitted infections. His Sunderland contract was cancelled when he admitted one count of grooming and one of sexual activity with a child at the start of his trial. Johnson, who had denied two further charges, was convicted of one of them in March this year. His teenage victim issued a statement after the trial, saying: “The last 12 months have been horrendous, and there have been times when I’ve wanted to hide away from the world. “There have been times I haven’t felt able to face people. There have been times when I’ve tried not to show people how upset I am. But sometimes it hasn’t been possible, and I’d just cry. I’ve felt so broken.”

Modric, but Perisic’s goals tipped the balance. He is the complete package. A strong tackler, good in the air, a nice first touch, killer pass and an eye for a goal. I still think Croatia would have reached the final, but for a moment of madness against Portugal.

STRIKER

Antoine Griezmann (France)

And to think he didn’t start in the opening game against Romania! Griezmann took the tournament by the scruff of the neck and showed his star quality. He ended up with six goals but it could have easily been nine or 10. Atletico Madrid tied him down to a new deal before Euro 2016, and that is now a shrewd decision. Not that his agent would agree!

Mario Gomez (Germany)

Renato Sanchez (Portugal)

The debate still rages as to how old he actually is - and he certainly plays with the maturity of a 23-year-old. Like Portugal, he grew into the tournament, making his mark on game after game. Outstanding in the final, he is Portugal’s future.

Ivan Perisic (Croatia)

The Croatia midfield was, in some ways, just like the Italian defence. It could have been Rakitic or

France 2016 was a graveyard for strikers. All the big guns misfired, and no young pups made their mark. There was one exception. Mario Gomez was always a handful, hitting a respectable three goals, and he was sorely missed in the semifinal. Germany wasted a hatful of chances; chances I feel Gomez would have converted. Had he played, Germany would have beaten France - and certainly Portugal.

Top team toppled! ONE of the problems with being top of the league is that all the other teams love it when they beat you (said Kevin Keegan). And Gaffers might just be starting to realise this, although they are still top only just!

Their latest fixture pitted them against last season’s champions, Phoenix bar, who have had an indifferent start to their title defence. And the first game of the night set the tone for a great match and a bit of an upset. Gaffers Joe, who recently won the Memorial Trophy, was drawn to play multiple-trophy winner,¡ Mitch, and the Phoenix man was in top form as he hit a 180 and a 15-darter to claim the first point for the visitors. Dave Mac then hit a

180 as he despatched boss man Neil, only for Gaffers to rally, taking a 3-2 lead with a maximum from Daniel. The game then swung back to the Phoenix as they took the last three points, culminating in a 116 check-out in the trebles leg by Dave Mac to seal victory. By this time, Gaffers skipper Terry had done at least 30 nervous laps of the pool table, and had no fingernails left! So, another chance for Pas O Nadas to take top spot, and another missed opportunity, although drawing with Spear Chuckers, this term’s surprise package, is no mean feat. Elsewhere, Exiles held the last rubber to beat the Playboys, while the Pub had Grizzly finishing a fine 111 as they put six past Sandys Reborn, who had Alan notching his first 180. Fancy a flutter on the Division 2 title? Don’t bother! Unpredictable is the word. Leaders Marilyns B, who soared to the top last

Pool Bar, takes place tonight (Friday) with no fewer than 84 play-

McIlroy: I’ll put diving ahead of Olympic golf RORY MCILROY, one of 20 golfers to withdraw from next month’s Olympics in Brazil because of Zika fears, has questioned the game’s relevance as an Olympic sport, and its poor drug-testing record. The Northern Ireland star, who led a pack of top players unwilling to risk their health through the virus, said he’d rather watch “the stuff that matters” in the Rio Games, like diving. The sport’s controversial return to the Games - after its 112-year absence - has been marred by the withdrawal of so many players, including the world’s top four. But while Jordan Spi-

eth confessed that his decision to snub the Games had been the “most difficult” of his life, McIlroy said he was simply looking after No.1. “I don’t feel like I’ve let the game down at all,” said the world No.4, ahead of the Open Championship, which began at Troon yesterday (Thursday). “I didn’t get into golf to try to grow the game - I got into golf to win.

Different people have different opinions. But I’m very happy with the decision I’ve made and I have no regrets about it. “I’ll probably watch the Olympics, but I’m not sure golf will be one of the events I watch. I’ll probably the events like track and field, swimming, diving - the stuff that matters.” McIlroy, who rates his four Major successes as more important than his appearance in the Games, also questioned whether golf was doing enough to justify its Olympic status in terms of drug-testing. He revealed that while he has been subjected to three urine tests at tournaments this year,

there is still no bloodtesting in the sport. “I could use HGH (Human Growth Hormone) and get away with it,” he said. “So I think blood-testing is something that needs to happen in golf to make sure that it is a clean sport going forward. “If golf wants to stay in the Olympics, it has to get in line with the rest of the sports. On average, I probably get tested four to five times a year, which is very little compared with the rest of the Olympic sports.” He added: “I think drug-testing in golf is still quite far behind some of the other sports.” Spieth, the last of the

top four to pull out of the Games, cited “health concerns” for his absence, including - but not exclusively the threat of the Zika virus. But Masters champion Danny Willett, who will be playing in Rio alongside Justin Rose for Great Britain, claimed there was more chance of catching malaria at golf events in South Africa. “The golf course is very close to the water, down in old marshland, so, if you break it down, the risks are probably slightly higher for us than other sports, just because we will be outside for long periods, and the mosquitoes are, poten-

tially, going to be there. “But it’s winter, and the threat level has been lessening every week. Hopefully, by the time we get there, it’s not really talked about, and it’s not really an issue.” Willett, who won his first major at Augusta in April, is relishing the prospect of becoming an Olympian, as are Catriona Matthew and Charley Hull, representing Britain’s women’s team. “Ever since golf made it into the Olympics, it has been an aim of mine to make the team, and I’m both happy and relieved that I’ve been included,” said 46-yearold Matthew.

HOW WILL BREXIT AFFECT SPANISH PROPERTY OWNERS?

If you are a property owner in Spain, or you are thinking of buying a holiday home or property in Spain, read on to see how the UK leaving the European Union is likely to affect you. Will Brexit happen?

It is important to bear in mind that we have yet to invoke article 50. Even assuming article 50 is invoked, although opinion is divided on this point, it may still be possible to negotiate to remain. Given the current legal and political uncertainty, Brexit should probably not be considered to be a forgone conclusion. Are you about to Purchase a Property in Spain? Barriers to purchasing: Many non-Europeans buy property in Spain, there are no barriers to non-European property investment. Applying for a Spanish Mortgage: Non-EU

members are currently considered to be higher risk and Spanish lenders offer less favourable mortgage terms to nonEU members. Whether the British will be considered to fall into a higher risk category is yet to be seen. Obtaining an NIE number (fiscal identity for foreigners in Spain): This is a relatively straightforward exercise and there are no discrepancies for nonEuropeans. Provided you have or are about to acquire a taxable interest in Spain, you can apply for a NIE certificate. Purchase Taxes: The relevant taxes applicable to the purchase itself will not be affected as they are all applicable to Spanish nationals, EU members and non-EU members alike. Exchange Rate: The most influential factor when purchasing a property in Spain since the referendum will be the exchange rate. How will British

Residents in Spain be Affected? Visas, Blue Card, Job Opportunities: If we leave the EU the British may conceivably need to apply for a visa to remain and a Blue Card to work in Spain. Preference to EU citizens in terms of job opportunities may also be exercised, so much is likely to depend on the outcome of the negotiations for exit as to whether the British will find themselves at a disadvantage. Spanish Health Services: British residents and holiday makers may in the future need to obtain private health insurance. Spanish resources are still stretched after the devastating impact of the recession on the Spanish economy, so excluding British access to the Spanish public health system would to a certain extent alleviate the Spanish health system. Pensions: The British who have retired out to Spain will have already

notice the difference in their pensions due to the weaker pound. Future developments as to the exchange rate will depend on a number of factors and predictions vary. Whether and how the Spanish government decide to implement restrictions on British residents is impossible to predict at the moment. Would it make commercial sense for the Spanish economy? On the one hand, any restrictions are likely to mean a loss a significant degree British investment in Spain. On the other hand, certain restrictions would provide relief to overstretched Spanish resources. Thinking of Selling a Property in Spain? Exchange Rate: The exchange rate is now favourable for the British selling in Spain. Market value: The property market in Spain is beginning to show signs of recovery and prices are starting to

increase. Taxes: Capital gains tax in Spain is the same for Spanish nationals, residents and non residents alike and there is no differentiation between EU and non-EU citizens. Are you about to inherit a Spanish interest? Spanish Inheritance Tax: Spain operates a two tier system for Spanish inheritance and gift tax. Until relatively recently nonresidents were subject to a different tax regime from that of Spanish residents. However, as of 1 January 2015 the Spanish inheritance tax law for EU residents changed to allow all EU residents eligibility for the same rates as Spanish residents. In light of the recent referendum results, the current status of British beneficiaries of Spanish estates may change again. Applications for Spanish inheritance tax rebates: Applications for a rebate on overpaid tax

since the new law was implemented in Spain may now be rejected. Conclusion There is so much uncertainty at the moment even as to Brexit itself that it is difficult to predict the future. If we do leave the EU, the effect on British expats and property owners in Spain will depend, in the instances explained above, on the results of the Brexit negotiations.
