Deadmau5 planning a Festival to remember

Continued from Front Noise, parking and social concerns led to the move away from the Las Americas football stadium. The new venue has given organisers much more freedom, and they have responded in style. There will be three main areas, including a camping zone with its own stage. This is open

from midday and will be a popular hang-out. There are two other stages, which will be graced by some of the biggest international and local names. Organisers expect 15,000 visitors a day, and there will be a big security presence. Over 300 health workers, firefighters, civil protection

and private security personnel will be on hand in the unlikely event of an emergency. There will also be a ‘field hospital’, with 20 beds, as well as doctors and nurses. Fifty Red Cross volunteers will also be on hand, along with National and Local Police, plus Guardia Civil officers. Organisers are keen to ensure a safe, troublefree festival, and four ambulances will be on stand-by each day, together with two separate fire-fighter shifts. Despite calls for a temporary road arrangement, the main TF-66 road, which links Guaza

with the Palm Mar turnoff roundabout, will operate as normal. There will be traffic police co-ordinating throughout the weekend. And to try to ease what will surely be a monster traffic tailback, organisers have laid on a free, hourly bus service, connecting the golf course with the centre of Los Cristianos. This will run until 6am on both days. There will also be a new, temporary parking area, accommodating 2,000 vehicles. Deadmau5 headlines the weekender in what is a rare appearance for

him in Spain. The Canadian, a worldwide star for the last decade, will bring his unique stage attire to the event. It has to be seen to be believed! Also appearing on the main stage are Nervo, Don Diablo, Danny Avila, Ummet Ozcan, Tchami and Otto Knows, who had a mega hit with Million Voices recently. Nina Kraviz headlines the Underground stage. The Russian, a rising star in the DJ world, will be joined by Carl Craig, Jus Ed, Claude von Stroke and many more. Plenty of local DJs are also playing, including Leon Cormack, who is doing a special set with Archip Simmelink. Leon told Canarian Weekly how much he was looking forward to the event. “It’s a huge deal now,” he said. “There are some really big names involved, and it’s going to be amazing playing in front of that crowd.” Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso told us: “The Arona Summer Festival is important as it links a lot of things. There are a lot of cultural events all week, and

people from all over the Island will get involved. “And this is the sort of thing we want to link the whole Island - not just with one great concert but with more cultural activities.” The cultural events this week were a big success, with musical workshops, mini-concerts and exhibitions in Arona. And the Festival is now playing a direct tourism role. Alonso said: “We know that half of the people who will be enjoying the event have come from outside the Canary Islands. “This shows what we can achieve. And when you also consider the thousands who have come from the North of the Island, it’s easy to understand the size of this event.” The event has been sold out for a while, with tickets for both days the VIP passes, the allinclusive tickets and the camping package - all snapped up. If you are not going, you can hear the Festival on Oasis Fm, who are broadcasting live tonight (Friday), from 6pm.

C A R O L I N A Reveron, Arona’s Safety and Civil Protection Councillor, intends to raise fines for people driving with vehicles in pedestrian areas – and she is aiming particularly at electricallypropelled mobility scooters.

Ms Reveron said: “There will be strong sanctions, especially for those electric vehicles that are travelling at high speeds on sidewalks and walkways.” Her commitment to toughen sanctions are interesting because a similar idea was proposed last summer. But it made no difference on the streets and the beach-side promenade. However, tough-talking Reveron is adamant that Arona Council will get to grips with the problem. “We will modify the existing laws and make it much more restrictive,” she said. “Our intention is to give a more appropriate set of instructions to the local police, so that they can act with more assurance and rigour against vehicles that invade the walkways of the tourist areas of Arona and Adeje.” Both municipal councils have agreed to co-ordinate against this menace because

Mobility-scooter joy-riders facing huge police fines the recreational use of vehicles, designed specifically for people with reduced mobility performance, has been a large problem here in the South for a few years. And every month, more and more of them are seen on the pavements. Reveron added: “The changes will not affect people who need these vehicles, or have with similar reasons to move about. We want to avoid the misuse that has been generated in recent times.” Canarian Weekly invited Jeremy, from Orange Badge, to comment. He has been a vocal critic of local Town Halls for the way they have dragged their feet on this subject, and here is his response: “If what you are saying is correct, then they apparently still don’t get it: i.e. the difference between a mobility scooter and an electric vehicle with x number of seats, used for pleasure. “On the face of what your report says, there

appears to be no attempt by either council to enforce the law: i.e. to stop road-going vehicles being driven on the pavements. “Yet mobility scooters are NOT designed for recreational use. People with reduced mobility use mobility scooters for one person, and electric chairs for one person, because they can’t get around otherwise. “The question that needs asking is: ‘Why are the councils allowing these electric double vehicles, which have been designed, configured and sold for road use, to be driven on the pavements?’ “As these are roadgoing vehicles, which are being allowed to drive on the pavements (even though they should be on the road), the civil responsibility of the rental company concerned will probably not cover them. “The poor tourists’ holiday insurance will certainly not cover them as they are driving a road-going vehicle (equivalent to a

car) on the pavement. “So the net result is that if people get run over and killed by someone driving one of these vehicles, they could lose everything they have at home in the ensuing court case. “What is preventing the councils from insisting that these double electric vehicles are driven on the road with the appropriate matriculation, insurance and crash helmets? “Does this mean anyone can drive anything

on the pavements now? How about an electric car for four people? Would that be OK? “The police have better things to do than judge whether a vehicle is ‘travelling at high speeds’. Apart from telling the rider to get off, and having it taken to the pound, there is not much more they can do, realistically. “Most hirers have no ID on them, and many have no money on them, so sanctions are a waste of time. Unfor-

tunately, it seems the police are always the ones who have to try to enforce the unrealistic “appropriate set of instructions” of the politicians. “When someone dies, possibly a child slipping from the hand of its mother, (and it will happen if these vehicles are not taken off the pavements immediately), which politician will hold his or hand up and say: ‘It’s my fault that I caused the death of this person?’ Our politicians appear to have no understanding of the severity of the problem; nor of the law; nor of the urgency in resolving the issue. It’s just more talk - and shuffling the responsibility to the police. “In summary, this problem will persist and get worse until the councils either ban them, or force them on to the roads. “Tenerife is supposed to be an up-market destination. But the councils, by their inaction, are dragging our reputation down to Benidorm levels. “Certainly, some of our clients will not be returning until these behemoths are taken off the pavement. “Until they are prepared to take that decision, we can only hope that no one dies - and that the respective councils are not sued for millions of euros for allowing road-going vehicles to be driven on pavements.”

Rajoy saying No to 10bn EU cuts ACTING Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government has rejected Brussels’ demands that it implement further budget cuts to the tune of 10bn euros.

European Union chiefs also want to freeze a further 1bn in EU funds and impose a proposed fine on Spain for not meeting its 2015 deficit reduction targets. Negotiations with the EU are taking place alongside Rajoy’s attempts to form a government in the wake of the 26th June election, at which his Popular Party (PP) won the

most votes but failed to secure an absolute majority. Rajoy is currently talking to the Socialist Party and Ciudadanos, hoping to convince their leaders to support his investiture in Congress on 2nd August. His economic team says the country is on track to register more than 3% growth this year, and that it is confident it can meet the EU’s objectives without further adjustments. Acting Economy Minister Luis de Guindos believes that improved GDP growth and job generation over the last year will negate the need for sanctions. He has already told the EU that despite not meeting the 2015 deficit target, there is no point

in punishing Spain at a time when its macroeconomic data is improving. “Spain has been growing for more than a year now at 3%, putting it among the EU’s leading economies,” said a spokesman for the Economy Ministry. “And when GDP growth increases above 3%, and we even see a slight increase in inflation, then we don’t need to do much more to automatically produce a fall in the public deficit ratio by almost a point - equivalent to those 10bn euros.” He added that last year saw Spain’s deficit fall by seven-tenths of a percentage point equivalent to 7bn euros - driven by the economy’s own momentum.

De Guindos believes the economy will now pick up speed and continue growing by around 3%, creating some half-a-million jobs per year. The Spanish team negotiating with Brussels insists that the country’s economy this year will shed another point from the deficit without having to apply the EU’s 10bn cut demand. The deficit objective for the end of 2016 is around 4%, falling to 2.9% for 2017, while Brussels has demanded 3.9% for this year, and 2.5% for 2017. Diplomatic sources in Brussels say the EU intends to impose a symbolic fine on Spain, while freezing around one billion euros in community funds for failing

to meet its 2015 deficit objectives. At the same time, it will demand a structural adjustment of 10bn until 2017, along with quarterly progress assessments. But the interim government rejects this flatly. “The cut would only have to be applied if Spain doesn’t grow this year and we don’t create any jobs, which is to say that the country’s economy flat-lined and that isn’t going to happen,” say Rajoy’s advisers. Spain will present its arguments against a possible sanction between 27th July and 2nd August. It’s a decisive week for Rajoy, during which he will attempt to unblock a political stalemate that has left

the country without a government since December’s first, inconclusive elections. De Guindos insists that Brussels will not fine Spain, using the example of Portugal to show that missing deficit objectives consistently (as Spain’s neighbour has done) is not the same as being on path to miss them, but with clear signs of economic growth, as is the case with Spain. The government is also confident that Brussels will not carry out its threat of directly supervising Spain’s accounts every three months. “Such a quarterly exam would be a strange thing to do, and the issue has not been raised,” say Economy Ministry sources.

Cost of home-buying is not the leading setback THE cost of buying a home is is no longer considered the main drawback to the average Spanish person, who would rather find one that really suits him.

Yes, it is still a major issue, but the main factor is the difficulty of finding that special home, according to a study on housing demand in Spain, by real estate group Casaktua. But in the Canaries, the price still remains the biggest obstacle to moving house - or apartment. Some 56% of Canarians who want to move house recognise that they can’t because it costs too much to find one they can afford. This proportion is more than 20 points higher than the national total, amounting to 35%. The report, which

analyses 2016 market trends, is based on interviews with 1,123 people aged over 25, who have a home in Spain, both in property and rental, or are looking for a home. Only 16% of Canarian respondents claim they cannot access funding to afford to buy or rent a property - just one point above the Spanish average. The problems encountered by residents in the Archipelago to save emerge as one of the explanations for their difficulty in being able to afford the house they want.

The average savings in the Canaries is 25% of the cost of the property they want to buy, according to data from Casaktua, which concludes that few expect to have 100% financing at the time of purchasing a house. Nationally, the average savings is 35%. The budget allocated to the Canarians to purchase or rent has increased by 6% against last year’s figure. Thus, they are willing to spend an average of 167,000 euros to buy a home - 11% more than last year and well below

AENA honours pledge to build new South terminal

SPANISH Airports operator AENA has fulfilled its promise with the Canarian Government and Tenerife Cabildo to invest in the South Airport with a new terminal.

It has been mooted for years and the final proposal, referred to in the Regulation Aeroportuaria Document (DORA), will reveal

a much lower budget than thought. The initial outlay will be 33.3m euros compared with the 120m stated by Acting Minister Ana Pastor when she visited the island last November. However AENA, will stump up the cash between now and 2019, spending a total of 126.3m euros. Of that sum, 45m will go to link the two existing terminals via a new building. The construction will take place from 2017 and the terminal will be operational in 2021.

The work will comprise two buildings connected with the implementation of an area between 16,00018,000sq/m, which will, in turn, allow greater capacity to the airfield - one of the main Cabildo’s demands. As for the initial proposal for a new terminal costing just 33.3m euros, AENA said financing of the total funds was regulated. And, since the action is valid until 2021, its strategic investment will be spread over the five years.

all the Spaniards, who have a budget of almost 210,000 euros. Yet rental costs are just four euros more than last year, at an average of 454 euros, which is 68 euros below the national average of 522 euros. The figures confirm the gradual but increasingly-sharp market recovery in Spain, and also in the islands. The percentage of Spaniards who intends to move house has gone up five points in the last year. And the motivation for 30% is for more space or extra rooms.

Taxi drivers? Some are boozed-up - or smelly SOME taxi drivers in Santa Cruz are operating under the influence of alcohol and narcotic substances, to the disgust of customers. And their personal hygiene leaves a lot to be desired.

Now, the Metropolitan Taxi Association of Tenerife (TMT), led by president Manuel Negrin, has asked the local police in Santa Cruz for “more controls, following numerous complaints which have given us a detrimental image”. Negrin said this week: “It has been reported by users that there are taxi drivers who provide a service under the influence of alcohol and or drugs, risking the customers’ lives. “We have also had complaints about poor conditions of hygiene and sanitation in many of the municipality’s taxis.” These allegations are

nothing new, and neither are the complaints from some people regarding the lack of professional attire. “The Municipal Ordinance (rules passed down by the Town Hall), Article 23 refers to clothing,” said Negrin. “It prohibits the use of sleeveless shirts, shorts and caps or hats, and requires care of their personal hygiene.” “But we still see licensees in this town with a dress unsuitable for providing this service, and for the image of the sector.” And Negrin, following another complaint, warned of the existence of a “good number” of Santa Cruz taxi drivers lacking the corresponding transportation card requirement, which is essential to pick up passengers and awarded by the Cabildo. The TMT chief accuses Public Service officials of “having a negligent attitude at times”, adding: “It has ignored the list sent by the transport section of the Cabildo de Tenerife.”

A time for political pacts, says Andalusia President SUSANA Díaz, Andalusia Government President, delivered a strongly-worded address to Adeje authorities and guests on Monday at Adeje’s annual Summer University inauguration.

She concentrated on challenges to Europe, but, like all the speakers, she first expressed her sympathy with the families of the victims of the Nice carnage and her rejection of terrorism in all its forms. “Nice is at the heart of Europe, and what happened there chilled all our hearts,” she said. Turning to her main theme, she first looked to her own country,

Spain, and its changing face of politics, “which is letting down more than a few”. That the country has been run by a caretaker government, dealing only with matters of urgency - given the lack of compromise after two general elections - “needs to be addressed,” she said. “The choices that have been made by the people haven’t been transformed into a government”, she said, adding that Spain was entering a difficult and complicated phase. “It would appear that the time for absolute majorities is over and the time for pacts has arrived.” Diaz said of recent events: “They help the need to give people confidence in the body politic. When politicians are

working to solve people’s problems is when they will begin to trust us again.” She said the country had become polarised,

but while people were used to making compromises in their daily lives, “we politicians need to change”, to reflect that willingness to

summit is now scheduled to be an annual event. The two factions discussed initiatives at this week’s meeting, including the European inter-regional cooperation programme MAC. They also discussed strategic, economic plans. This mutual co-operation will develop in the fields of tourism, business and energy, according to Clavijo. In addition, the

Binter Canary airline is to begin operating scheduled flights with the Cape Verde archipelago. Prime Minister Correia, said: “There is a strong, political interest in Cape Verde with the ideas of the Canary Islands. “These favourable talks help both governments to define a strategic plan to strengthen the markets and their position in the EU.”

Canaries back on song with Cape Verde team

THE Canary Islands and Cape Verde have this week resumed talks, with an official visit to the Canaries by Jose Ulisses Correia, newly-appointed Prime Minister of the Cape Verde archipelago.

It is seen as an important summit after

years of frosty relations between the two, brought on by the 2008 economic crisis. This was highlighted by Canarian Government leader Fernando Clavijo, who announced at a press conference that the governments of both archipelagos will meet again in November, once Cape Verde’s presidential elections, scheduled for 2nd October, have concluded. And the bilateral

reach agreements. It was, she added, “impossible to propose easy solutions to complex problems”, and those who tried risked dangerous consequences, pointing to Brexit as an example. The Andalusia President said a divided population, as the UK is today, is never a solution, adding: “You cannot move ahead if you have one half of the population of the country feeling they have won, and are victorious over the other half.” British society today, she said, was divided, as the result of a Prime Minister (David Cameron, now resigned) who, to resolve an internal political problem, caused enormous problems for his own country and for Europe. “We must always put the general interest above all others, whether we are in government or opposition,” she said. She also mentioned poverty, not just in Spain or Europe, but globally, and the need for investment from the Central European Bank; the need to tackle inequality in Europe; poor working conditions in many countries, and the need, reflecting comments made earlier by the Adeje Mayor, for investment in education to guarantee a better future. “We are seeing in other countries - in Asia, in Poland - new educational pacts, investment in innovation,” said Diaz. “Pacts with the business sector, leading to increased employment and the elaboration of a productive network. She also stressed the need for a better social model and a fiscal pact at European level. “When there is a violent economic crisis, the people of Europe need to feel protected,” she pointed out. “And if we were all working from the same sheet, we could avoid fiscal dumping and destroy fiscal tax havens.” On the roles of the Canary Islands and Andalusia in Europe, she said: “We need to have a stronger voice in Eu-

rope - and Europe needs to hear our voice.” Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez, welcoming the Andalusia President to the inauguration of the Adeje Summer University, said this educational model had evolved to meeting changing needs over its 24 years of its existence. From a few courses, Adeje was now home to the University’s South Campus, with the first full-time, four-year course Tourism students about to graduate. Antonio Martinón, Rector of the University of La Laguna, congratulated Adeje on the 24 years of partnership in this venture. And he joined with the Mayor in looking to a more international Campus in the future as part of the overall, internationalisation of thirdlevel education. Regional Education Minister Soledad Monzón congratulated the rich variety of courses on offer and, in particular, mentioned the course on prevention of gender violence in schools, and the workshop on the creation of materials for specialneeds education. Carolina Darias, President of the Canarian Parliament. said Adeje’s Summer University was also an excellent support for tourism in the Island, a forum for debate which added quality to this holiday destination. She congratulated Mayor Fraga on his constancy in ensuring funding for the academic endeavours, as well as the University of La Laguna, applauding the encouragement of education, saying: “We have the ideas, we have the desire, we have the talent.” Patricía Hernandez, the regional government vice-president, said we were living in a complicated world with many challenges - educational, environmental, social, etc. And, therefore, the kind of courses on offer in the Summer University were well-designed to deal with such complexities.

Signpost to the future THERE is a famous quote that people always get wrong: “If you build it, he will come.” It’s from the Kevin Costner movie Field of Dreams. But the misquoted version of “If you build it, they will come” has been used for decades.

It sprang to mind this week with all the buzz around the Arona Summer Festival. Every single one of the 15,000 tickets for both days has been sold. That’s quite an achievement. I know the powers that be were disappointed to move the event away from the centre of town. But, by serendipity, they may just have created a monster. The fact that so many people are flying in from overseas, or the mainland, shows the quality of the week-ender. It’s not cheap to book and cover all the costs for the big-name DJ’s, but the public have backed it in spades.

Just like they did for the Elton John concert. Quite why the gigs played by Simply Red, Michael Bolton and, to a lesser degree, Rod Stewart, struggled is a mystery. In Gran Canaria, they attracted 24,000 for Bruce Springsteen a few years ago, and the bigger events now seem to be there. However, if you give the public what they want, they will, it seems, go. The UB40 event did well a few months ago, but the subsequent Legends events, not so much. And maybe this is the key. I’m struggling to think of the last young, bigname act we had had here. Even Ricky Martin, who appears in Las Americas in a few weeks, is forty-something. Yet our Arona Summer Festival, with the fresh, young, hip things, is a totally sell-out. Remember, the tickets are not cheap. If it’s not price, it must be quality. That, in many ways, is the key to Tenerife - and success in the modern world.

An inquest heard that 57-year-old Julie Dudhill, a project manager with John Lewis, from Fleet, Hampshire, was drifting just yards from her husband, Andy, on

27th June. He realised she was in danger and swam back to shore to get help from the lifeguard. But her body was brought back to the Costa Brava beach, where she was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr Dudhill, an electrician, was away from home as the inquest took place at Basingstoke, Hampshire. A neighbour said: “He was absolutely devoted to her. She was

lovely. Everybody is so shocked at what has happened.” Her cause of death was confirmed by the coroner as asphyxia by drowning. But the inquest was adjourned until October, and Mrs Dudhill’s son did not want to comment on the circumstances of his mother’s death. Earlier this year, a four-year-old British boy drowned in a swimming pool in Torrevieja, just south of Alicante.

Two British women also died in 2015 after going for a late-night swim on the Costa Brava, in northern Spain. Figures collated by Escuela Segovia de Socorrismo, a charity devoted to drowning prevention, reveals that 47 people perished in the sea at Alicante in 2014 - the second-highest total for a Spanish region. Hotel managers are reported to be campaigning for longer lifeguard seasons.

Mangoes by the ton, but it’s not enough! THE mango season starts late next month in Malaga and Granada - Spain’s main production areas - and early forecasts indicate that harvesting volumes will be lower than anticipated, despite high hopes.

Producers were expecting an increase, and not only because there are new plantations, providing extra growing space. They were sure this would be an “On” year a period in which mango trees have an abundant production cycle. But the fruits have had problems because of excess rain in February and March, and the atypical temperature changes. “We expected to harvest twice the amount of mangoes we had two years ago, when we experienced the last ‘On’ year,” said Oscar Ramirez, manager of Malaga’s Tropico Spain company. “Now, the industry expects to produce some 20,000 tons.”

Jose Linares, new President of the Spanish Association for Tropical Fruits, said that though many flowers were aborted in the two mango blooms, they had yet to determine the results of a third flowering, which surprised the sector. “We’ll have more accurate results about this unexpected bloom in late July,” he said. “But everything points to a crop forecast of 20,000 tons and large, commercial sizes.” Although production

will be high, market conditions are really good for the mango, according to Linares, because demand for the fruit is increasingly higher. “There’s usually more competition in summer with other summer fruits, so consumption and prices decrease a little,” he said. “However, we expect sales will be good in Europe, given the added value of Spanish mangoes because of their proximity to these markets and their freshness,

in comparison with overseas mangoes.” The situation is similar in Granada’s tropical coast, where producers remain positive. “We anticipate there will be a good harvest, despite the sudden changes in temperature that have affected the trees’ flowering on the coast of Granada. We expected to have a spectacular harvest, but production will still be above the previous season’s average,” said Fernando Martin, manager of the Procam company.

Surfers aiding local economy ADRIÁN García Perdigón, Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of La Laguna, believes that surfing is very much a part of the economic motor of the Canary Islands.

The Professor, a surfer expert appearing at Adeje Summer University, told students that the Canaries were considered the Hawaii of Europe, given their excellent waves throughout the year. He was expounding the theme of surfing and tourism, emphasising the importance of the sport as a tourism generator, and the waves “as a resource that generate a sustainable economy, as well as a culture related to a global phenomenon.” He cited Las Américas, La Caleta in Adeje, Taganana, Anaga, Valle Guerra, Punta de Hidalgo, El Médano, Pozo Izquierdo and Jandía as just some of the top surfing locations, as well as important centres for tourism. And, given the yearround climatic conditions, the Canarias is an excellent choice for surfers, whatever the season. He also referred to the parallel economic advantages to promoting surfing here, such as

9 CW La Tejita hotel plan is queried News

22nd July - 28th July 2016

THE long-running La Tejita argument has taken another turn because the European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions has decided to address the National Environment Agency and the Canary Islands Government. Committee members have asked for an urgent report and an environmental-impact study on the proposed construction of a hotel next to the protected, natural area of La Tejita in the Granadilla region. This is excellent news for campaign group Save The Tejita, which sent a request to the

European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions, begging them to look at the plans. The European Commission, depending on the reports, can evoke European law mandatory 92/43CEE in Article 6, which, says Save The Tejita campaigners, will halt the project and lead to a new review. They were “very satisfied” with this week’s news and said that after meeting in the European Parliament, they wanted to thank “the entire Commissions and it’s enthusiasm which it is carrying out on the said request”.

No contact on hold

fashion, music, image, materials, etc. Prof Perdigón added: “The average cost of a surfer staying in the Canaries and practising her or his sport is 30 euros a day, so, annually, this sport generates an income of about six billion dollars globally. “And over half of those who are surfers on holiday, also spend time and money on other, nature-related sports such as mountain-walking or climbing. “In other words, these

are tourists with a vested interest in the environment, and, while on holiday, will care for their surroundings with the intention of leaving a place as they found it.” He added: “It follows that there needs to be a symbiosis between the local environment and the local population, who also need to be made aware of the relevance and importance of caring for the location. “We’re not just talking about promoting surfing as a tourism activity, but also creating complementary activities which are also sustainable, such as surfing schools, though, currently, these are op-

erating without proper legislation.” The Professor said there were over 1,000 surfers registered here currently, “although we do realise that many more practise the sport”. Statistics show that most surfers are under 30, and the sport is popular among young women, which isn’t surprising with role models such as Alexandra Rinder, Marina Taylor and Iballa Ruano all top-class surf and bodyboard stars. And while surfing as a business might be relatively new in the Canaries. it is a proven economic motor in other parts of the world, with over 10 million surfers globally.

FOR several years, the Cabildo has been planning to introduce a new, contactless payment system for Tenerife’s public transport, which will allow users to enjoy a greater range of discounts, among other things.

The mechanism was tendered some time ago, costing more than eight million euros to bring it across the whole network. Although the initial plan was to launch the new system this summer on the TITSA bus network, as well as the Metro tram system in Santa Cruz, it will now be delayed at least a year, admitted Mobility Minister Manuel Ortega.

Among reasons for the delay is the need by the service providers to adapt the software because the current technology needs updating. Ortega said the entire fleet of buses has had the new system installed. The company just needs to get it working now! The Cabildo hopes to start testing this revolutionary payment scheme, which will see the removal of the traditional paper method later this year, or early 2017. With a bit of luck - and possible faults all corrected - the contactless system will operational for all passengers next summer. “The idea is that the contactless card and traditional paper voucher system can go live at the end of 2017,” said Ortega. “And we can stop the old system in 2018.”

Passengers are boosting Canarian airports’ trade MORE than 6.4 million international passengers went through Canarian airports between January and June this year, which was a 13% increase over the same 2015 period.

The data, released by the General Department of Knowledge and Tourism Studies under the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, also revealed that “low-cost” international passenger traffic was up 12.2%, from 2.1m to 2.4m travellers. Meanwhile, traditional companies recorded somewhat higher growth in this period,

exceeding four million passengers. Last month, Canaries’ airports received 950,337 international passengers, a growth of 19.2% over the same month last year and the Islands’ biggest rise. On international flights, 40.7% of passengers (386,624) chose low-cost airline CBC, which saw an 8.6% increase. Meanwhile, passengers on traditional carriers (563,713) showed a rise of 27.8%, again the highest in the country, and accounted for 59.3% of the total flow. Also in June, Spanish airports received 8.1 million international passengers, experiencing an 11.4% growth over June 2015. On international

flights, 50.6% of passengers chose a lowcost airline, which experienced an 11.1% increase. Meanwhile, passengers of traditional companies provided a rise of 11.7%, and a concentrated 49.4% of the total flow. Low-cost airlines Ryanair, Easyjet and Vueling accounted for 33.4% of total air-flow of international passengers in Spain last month. These companies had a combined share of 66% of total passengers, who flew to Spain in a CBC. And all showed remarkable progress. Between January and June 2016, they reached about 36.2 million international passengers at Spanish airports 12% more than a year

ago. And international passenger traffic CBC counted a 13.9% increase. Meanwhile, traditional companies registered a 2% growth, which was somewhat lower than expected. But 80% of total air-flow came from the European Union, which enjoyed a 12.5% increase. The rest of the air-flow (20%) was up by 9.8%. The main countries providing international passengers bound for Spain continue to show remarkable growth in June, which benefits almost every region. The arrival of international passengers from UK accounted for 28.5% of total arrivals from foreign airports, delivering an annual rise of 16.4% last month.

Clear-the-air talks to beat airport weather

C A N A R I A N Weekly has written about ongoing weather problems at the North airport in Tenerife a few times over the years.

Since opening over 80 years ago, barely a day goes by without some sort of weather-related situation. It is now widely accepted that the airport is in the wrong place, but such was the haste to get it constructed that local concerns and

knowledge were overlooked. This week the Joint Commission Ministry of Development in the Canaries, responsible for air transport, met in Madrid with the intention of addressing a number of measures to improve problems there.

Present at the meeting were Elias Castro, the Regional Government’s General Director of Transport, and Raul Medina, General Director of Civil Aviation. One of the important points raised was the high number

Alonso says: Put us on road to harmony CABILDO President Carlos Alonso insists there is an imbalance in road investments that harms the Island. He believes “other islands” are getting priority and stresses that there are “more needs and less investment in Tenerife”.

In a press conference to publicise the issues, he called out the Canary Islands Government, saying the longstanding queues on the TF-5, and the closure of the insular ring, were problems being resolved by the Ministry of Public Works. But, he added: “The Canarian Government must be willing to invest 20m euros to improve the stretch between Los Realejos and Icod, and the stretch of motorway connecting northern Guamasa with Las Chumberas.” With this investment, said Alonso, the regional government can solve a lot of the problems of tinerfeños, al-

though, he reiterated, it is an economic effort that corresponds to the Ministry of Public Works of the Canary Islands Government. Alonso said the Cabildo in Tenerife had political will, economic resources “and intelligence to solve these problems. But it is an effort for everyone. Our island has an emptier glass than the other six glasses”. He added: “I would not say we should remove money from Gran Canaria, but the Canarian Government is committed to investing in Tenerife.” The Cabildo chief said there had been more investment in Gran Canaria than in Tenerife in the last five years. Alonso said he had spoken with the General Directorate of Motorways of the Ministry of Public Works about the current five-year plan to invest Gran Canaria roads with 107m euros and just 47m in Tenerife. “The solution is very easy,” said Alonso. “Invest 36m euros in solving problems such as Las Chafiras and show the Cabildo that you can help to solve other problems.”

of flight cancellations and diversions occurring throughout the year from the North airport because of adverse weather conditions. “I have requested that an urgent report about this is prepared,” said Castro. “We cannot continue to allow it to become a permanent problem whenever there is fog.” A spokesman for the

Joint Commission, which will prepare a technical report, said: “Whatever is concluded, it is necessary to make investments to find solutions that have to be made.” And Castro added: “This situation is repeated year after year after year, and I hope the report results in improved operability, even in adverse weather conditions.”

TF-1 resurfacing will be completed in four nights THE South section of the TF-1 motorway has long been overdue essential maintenance work and, finally, something is being done.

The stretch between San Isidro and the turnoff to Guaza, which has prompted thousands of complaints because of its high level of deterioration, potholes and other deficiencies, will finally be fixed. Miguel Becerra, Insu-

lar Director of Public Works, said: “The council will undertake the work of resurfacing in late September or early October. “This work is vital because we must remember, along with other matters, the first impression of visitors who land at Reina Sofia airport.”. Becerra said the work would cover an 8km length, affecting two lanes westbound. It will be carried out at night to cause the least possible inconvenience to TF-1 drivers, and the

resurfacing should take around four nights. Once completed, the workmen will then fix the motorway between kilometres 43 and 49, in the direction of Santa Cruz, which also shows significant deterioration. For this section, the work should not go beyond three nights. The Insular Director said: “These will not be the only actions undertaken in the coming months in the southern region. Before the end of the year, we will also recover parts of the TF-1

that need to be paved.” Becerra also announced work, before the end of the year as well, to be carried out on the main south road (TF-82), between Armeñime and Guia de Isora. He stressed the commitment of the Ministry of Public Works to tender work on the Las Chafiras inter-section by the end of 2017. That will come as an enormous relief to drivers because it is one of the South’s black spots for traffic congestion and constant traffic jams.

Adapted buses just the ticket BUS company TITSA and Tenerife Cabildo this week presented La Orotava with 25 new buses with “100% accessible to all” for North Tenerife.

This new fleet ends the lack of vehicles adapted for people with reduced mobility to use on the public transport system. Titsa has invested 5,094,397 euros purchasing these vehicles, which have USB connections for recharging mobiles and free wifi access. “They use 20% less fuel and emit 30% less noise “ said Insular Director of Development and Titsa President Miguel Becerra.

The lack of buses equipped with proper

wheelchair access was a source of embarrass-

ment in the North of Tenerife, a complaint

even raised by Puerto de la Cruz Council.

The aim of Titsa and the council is to continue to renewal the Titsa fleet, so that vehicles are replaced every seven years. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, said the new vehicles “shows the Island administration has made a firm commitment to public transport”. Alonso also reiterated his desire for a planned bus-lane, which would include highoccupancy vehicles on the North motorway (TF-5) to try to end the historical tailbacks. Titsa manager Jacobo Kalitovics stressed that the 25 vehicles were “100% accessible,” adding: “They have lifts to facilitate access for the disabled, and other communication systems for people with other types of requirements.”

King’s ultimatum: Find new PM - or vote again!

Rock-solid Boris THOSE living in Gibraltar may have cursed Boris Johnson after the UK’s referendum result because the Brexit victory owed much to eccentric Boris and his undoubted charm.

But they’ll be hardpushed to find a finer defender of their British Overseas Territory. True, his appointment as Foreign Secretary for Theresa May’s new government produced groans and laughter in equal doses around the world. And no wonder because Boris is infamous for his lack of global diplomacy. He was branded “a liar with his back to the wall” by his counterpart in France, while Germany appeared bemused at the pick of a “reckless con artist”. But Spain appeared more focused on issues closer to home: namely, how the new Foreign Secretary might greet Spain’s proposals for shared sovereignty over Gibraltar, which has become a permanent thorn in the side of bilateral relations between Britain and Spain. Hardly had Britain woken up to the news of the shock referendum result last month before José Manuel GarcíaMargallo, Spain’s Foreign Minister, had offered his assistance. Spain would work with Britain on a cosovereignty agreement “to solve the situation of Gibraltar and allow it to keep its access to the EU’s single market,” said Margallo. Boris has probably not had time to clarify his specific plans for office but, when it comes to Gibraltar, he has made himself extremely clear. He dedicated his weekly Daily Telegraph column to the issue at the height of border

22nd July - 28th July 2016

tensions between Spain and Gibraltar in the summer of 2013. “The Spanish must take their hands off Gibraltar’s throat’ wrote the then London Mayor, who accused Spain of returning to a “Francostyle blockade” and of using the Rock “to divert attention from its own economic woes”. He added: “There are those who think I am mad to stick up for Gibraltar … why, say the sceptics, should we care about a rocky relic of empire? Why are we allowing this colonial anachronism to poison our relations with Spain - a country that is not only a good friend and EU partner, but which for decades now has been a liberal democracy?” Recounting his own visit to the tiny territory 30 years earlier, he answered that Gibraltar should be defended against Spain because, like the Falkland Islanders, its residents have “an overwhelming desire to be British”. He dismissed future plans to share sovereignty completely, saying: “Of course, there are people who will try to persuade them (Gibraltar) to seek an alternative destiny, or who will try to cook up schemes for joint sovereignty. They will never agree.” In a message that may yet be repeated often when it comes to diplomatic relations with Spain over the Gibraltar issue, Boris said: “Madrid should be in no doubt as to the strength of British determination.”. Gibraltar may, in part, hold Boris responsible for the success of the Brexit campaign, to which a whopping 96% of Gibraltarians voted against. But they can be confident in this fierce defender, when it comes to dealing with Margallo. Be assured, he will pull no punches!

KING Felipe VI has begun the legal procedure required to give Spain a new government in the wake of last month’s repeat election. And he has given acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy one week to make it happen!

Ana Pastor, the new Speaker of Congress, yesterday (Thursday) handed the monarch a list of the party representatives who will meet with him next week. They will discuss the possibilities of political deals, with a view to getting a new Government up and running as soon as possible. Following her meeting with the King, Pastor said he had expressed “great satisfaction at seeing the new Congress in session”. The country has been run by a caretaker government (Rajoy’s PP party) since late December, and there is a growing urgency for law-makers to start dealing with such issues as the 2017 budget, or deficit containment. They will be especially anxious to do so, because Brussels is

threatening to impose a substantial fine on Spain for systematically overshooting its deficit target. Rajoy’s party won most seats at the election, but it fell short of a majority, and the King has given him just one week to secure enough support from other parties to get himself reinstated. But the acting government leader has not yet confirmed whether he plans to bid for the post. Following the original and inconclusive 20th December election, which the PP also won, the acting PM refused to submit to an investiture vote because he knew he lacked the support of any rival party. Socialist leader Pedro Sánchez, who made a bid instead, was voted down. And since then, Sánchez has blamed the

anti-austerity Podemos party for not supporting his candidacy. Therefore, it makes it unlikely that both groups will attempt to form an alternative, leftist government this time around. If no deals are reached and no prime minister found, Spain will be facing a record third election. King Felipe will meet members of 12 parties, representing all groups with a congressional presence - except for the Basque radical party Bildu and the Catalan Republican Left (ERC), who declined the Royal invitation. But though the Spanish head of state is a symbolic figure, with no power to force deals or make appointments, he does play a mediator role. The monarch,

under Article 99 of the Spanish Constitution, must facilitate an investiture by meeting with political leaders to decide whether any one candidate stands a chance of forming a government. Until now, neither the PP nor Socialists PSOE had secured large enough majorities for the new prime minister to be an obvious choice. But, following years of crisis and the emergence of protest parties Ciudadanos and Podemos, the December election produced a fragmented scenario in which no party was strong enough to form a government. Subsequent attempts at creating coalitions all failed, leading to that fresh election on 26th June, which has proved futile so far!

Police smash legal documents’ fraud THE National Police have arrested 21 people here in the South for falsifying passports and legal documents. They are all of Senegalese origin.

Police believe they have smashed a large criminal organisation, whose purpose was to sent Senegalese citizens into different countries in Europe. The scam would have seen these men and women with “Spanish nationality”, transferring freely around the continent undetected.

The organisation had a leader, who directed and co-ordinated the different structures and levels of the gang. And this network had at its disposal a large number of Senegalese citizens, who were naturalised Spaniards, able to simulate a parent-child relationship with a citizen, also Senegalese, who was a legal alien. They then collected approximately 1,500 euros per “child” and, subsequently, the leader obtained a false Senegal passport and adapted the biographic data. The handling of travel documents and others were made in Senegal,

then brought to the Island either by courier or by human couriers. Finally, the “client” was registered in the home of the “parent” in exchange for more money. The households were located in Tenerife municipalities. And with this last step, the organisation had all the necessary documents (registration certificate, Senegal passport, ‘fake’ father’s birth certificate, etc.) to go to the Civil Registry in Arona to apply for Spanish nationality. The alleged “parent and child” turned up, accompanied by a “handler”, who performed the necessary steps to

deal with the legal request, with so-called parent and child mere spectators. The price paid by “customers” to get nationality in some cases reached 10,000 euros. Police had been following the gang for some time. Carefully, they obtained the necessary evidence, and, in one swoop, picked everyone up, including the ringleader, a Senegalese nationalised Spanish who is 55 years old and is now in pre-trial detention. A search of their homes uncovered lmany false documents, and proof of remittance transactions to Senegal.

Puerto de la Cruz all set for its 72m-euro facelift THERE have been some stories recently about a Puerto de la Cruz redevelopment, and this week the investment was signed off.

Cabildo President Carlos Alonso announced on Wednesday that 72 million euros will be invested in the port and a regeneration project. “This project has the full backing of the Cabildo and we will fulfil the commitment to the initial draft from earlier this year,” said Alonso. “Work will start in early 2018.” He added that improvements to the port of Fonsalía will be included, although there is “no budgetary provision”. That’s because the Cabildo is awaiting the Ministry of Public Works to modify the terms of the agreement, to incorporate funding for the municipality of Guia

de Isora. Alonso also said that “a significant portion of the port in Fonsalia may be financed by a private initiative”. He clarified that the PDLC project was just one of 36 programmes designed to improve the Island, which includes funding of 230m

euros over 10 years. Most of these investments will be made in infrastructure, especially “with an eye on helping with mobility issues,” said the Cabildo chief. The project’s signing also reveals a few more precise details. There will be an improved

Emergency Operations Co-ordination Unit, costing 620,000 euros. Also, the Plaza of Spain will be remodelled at a cost of five million euros, with extra funding from the private sector. The idea is to make the Plaza a jewel in the Tenerife crown.

The luxury home, selling for as much as £150m (178.5m euros), can be found in the Admiralty Arch, a landmark site built by King Edward VII between 1910 and 1912 as a tribute to his mother, Queen Victoria. Rafael Serrano bought a 250-year lease on the entire building from the British Government in 2012. And the deal included

an agreement that his Prime Investors Capital company would convert the 13,685sq/m structure into a five-star hotel, featuring 100 bedrooms, with some space reserved for residential apartments. Prices of the fully-serviced apartments range between 100,000-115,000 euros per square metre, according to London property developers. Buyers interested in a full-sized apartment will need to spend around £150m (178.5m euros) including stamp duty and fees. If a buyer is found, the transaction will beat the sale of a loft apartment in One Hyde Park, which was sold for a record 166m euros in 2014.

Mum gored to death at a Spanish bull run

A MOTHER of two was gored to death by a heifer as she stood on the sidelines, watching the Cristo del Rayo festival in Moratalla, a small Spanish town in Murcia.

López González, 47, was with her husband and one of her children on Tuesday when the animal’s horns pierced her abdomen through a railing separating her from the street, injuring her fatally. She was an avid festival-goer, returning annually to celebrate the week-long event. Three days of mourning were called in a tribute to the woman, following matador Victor Barrio’s fatal goring in Teruel the previous week - the first in a bullring this century. Various towns hold bull-runs across Spain during different celebrations, the most famous being the San Fermín Festival in Pamplona. This year, during a festival in Pedreguer near Valencia, 29-year-old Rubén Frasquet Morant was gored to death by a heifer on the same day as Barrio’s death. And at a bull-run in Fuentasauco in the province of Salamanca, a 65-year-old man was gored when a bull broke through a fence and attacked a group of men. PETA and AnimaNaturalis, which will almost certainly have plenty to say about the latest death by goring, had already protested about this year’s Pamplona festival, denouncing the “cruel, violent and bloody” practice of bullfighting.

No Nice niceties for PM FRENCH Prime Minister Manuel Valls was booed and jeered by thousands of people, packing the seafront close to the scene of last Thursday’s Bastille Day carnage.

The disturbance happened before and after a minute’s silence to remember the victims of last Thursday’s truck attack in Nice. The crowds stood on the rocky beach, with flowers in their hands, to pay homage to victims of this needless attack. Boos rang out as it emerged that confidence in the government to combat terrorism had plummeted to an all-time low. And there were also placards calling for President Francois Hollande to resign. And after the silence, Valls was booed again, one woman shouting: “Resign, Manuel Valls!” Nice resident Isabel, who declined to give her surname, did not boo, but she understood why tensions were running high. “They want Mr Valls to resign because he didn’t put enough police on that day,” said the 60-year-old. “I was there and didn’t see any police. It’s terrible to say, but we need a stronger prime minister, with laws against radicalism.” Nice’s famous Promenade des Anglais, where the carnage occurred, is still strewn with flowers. But it re-opened after three days and is again flooded with locals and tourists. A total of 84 people died in the slaughter, with 303 injured - 52 critically - and at least 10 of the dead were children. Around 80 people are still in hospital, with 49 in a serious condition. Eighteen of them, including a child, are believed to be “critical”. Foreign ministers from the EU opened a summit in Brussels, also attended by US Secretary of State John Kerry. Their talks have focused on the fight against terrorism in Europe in the wake of the attack, and relations with Turkey after its

failed military coup. On Sunday, it emerged that truck killer Mohamed LahouaiejBouhlel sent a picture of himself laughing as he mingled with the crowd, hours before the attack. He is also alleged to have sent a text message “discussing weapons” prior to his massacre by lorry. French police were continuing their investigation this week, with six people being questioned and another under arrest. But Bouhlel’s estranged wife, one of those held, has now been released. Authorities are trying to determine whether Lahouaiej-Bouhlel acted alone, but the French Prime Minister said he had been radicalised quickly. According to a judicial source, several people said the driver showed signs of being religious. But some of his friends and relatives claimed he smoked, drank and never visited mosques. Islamic State has said the lorry driver was one of its “soldiers”, but officials have yet to produce evidence that Bouhlel had any links with IS. Meanwhile, the Spanish Interior Ministry has decided to maintain the national threat level for terrorist attacks at 4 following the deadly attack. The decision, one below the maximum 5,

was agreed unanimously by security experts at an emergency meeting of a committee formed to oversee Spain’s AntiTerrorism Pact. Acting Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz, senior party officials and representatives of the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the National Intelligence Centre (CNI) and the Intelligence Centre Against Terrorism and Organised Crime (CITCO) all sit on the committee. Fernández Diaz said boldly: “Just like we defeated ETA’s terrorism with our unity, let nobody doubt that we are also going to defeat jihadist terrorism.” The experts agreed to implement a set of “reinforcement measures”, such as police checkpoints along Spain’s land border with France, which were already in place because of the European Championship football. Other measures include beefing up security at critical transportation hubs such as airports, in tourist-heavy areas and in places where crowds are likely to converge. It is the third time in under a year that acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has called a meeting of the committee. At a press conference following the gathering, Fernández Díaz provided an update on the Nice attack. “Among the 84 fatali-

ties there are people of various nationalities, although for the moment there are no Spaniards,” he said. “We are in constant touch with French authorities and have conveyed our condolences, and offered our collaboration.” Fernández Díaz added: “Everything seems to indicate that it is a jihadist attack. The circumstances of the attack suggest that it was inspired by jihadism; but it is another thing to make a specific attribution. “The usual thing is for planned or co-ordinated attacks to be quickly claimed by the perpetrators. When this process is slow, it is a sign that the attack was carried out by what is known as a lone wolf.” On the morning before the attack, President Hollande said the state of emergency put in place after last November’s Paris attacks would end after the Tour de France finished, on 26th July. France had just finished hosting the Euro 2016 football tournament, during which the country had extensive security measures in place with many soldiers deployed. Some matches were played in Nice, ending with the EnglandIceland match on 27th June. On the evening of 14th July, tens of thousands

of people were celebrating Bastille Day on the Nice waterfront. As well as the customary fireworks, the celebrations included an airforce display. That’s when Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a Tunisian resident of France, swerved his rented, 19-tonne cargo truck into the crowds on the Promenade des Anglais. He also fired at police and civilians with a handgun before being shot dead by police, but not before killing 84 people and injuring 303 - 52 critically. At least 10 of the dead were children. The driver was said to have driven up and down the promenade the previous day, and had parked up for nine hours in a side-street before the slaughter. Astonishingly, two French policemen spoke with LahouaiejBouhlel on the Wednesday and seemed happy with his explanation that he was delivering ice-cream, despite the huge truck, which was never searched. As for international measures, Fernández Díaz said that the EU Passenger Name Record (PNR) was about to become operative, just like weapons and explosives controls and a global definition of terrorism. In all of these aspects, he said: “Spain is at the forefront.”

Saudis ‘were not to blame for 9/11’

THE White House says that previously- classified papers concerning the 9/11 attacks, which were released last Friday, show that the Saudis had no official role in the horrific affair.

Lawmakers and victims’ families campaigned for years for the papers to be published, alleging that high-level Saudis were complicit in the attacks. The pages, from the 2002 report, found it likely that the attackers were given financial help from people inside the kingdom. Of the 19 hijackers who staged the 2001 attacks, 15 were Saudi nationals. Almost 3,000 people were killed when the planes they seized were flown deliberately into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Another hijacked plane

was brought down in a field in Pennsylvania. An independent panel completed the 9/11 Commission Report a year after the attacks. But several sections - informally known as “The 28 Pages” - were withheld from the public for 13 years, fuelling speculation about their contents. And campaigners who lobbied for their release argued that the US government was shielding an important ally. The released pages were still lightly redacted - a form of editing - by the CIA, and the report’s original authors cautioned that some of the information contained in “The 28 Pages” was uncorroborated material from the FBI. According to the declassified document: “While in the United States, some of the 9/11 hijackers were in contact with, and received support or assistance from, individuals who may be connected to

the Saudi government.” It included a possibility that money was sent from the Saudi Royal family to the hijackers, among other alleged links. But White House press secretary Josh Earnest is adamant that the pages “don’t shed any new light, or change any of the conclusions. about responsibility for the 9/11 attacks”. He added: “This information does not change the assessment of the US government, that there’s no evidence that the Saudi government or senior Saudi individuals funded al-Qaida.” The Saudi government said it welcomed the release of the documents, its US ambassador, Abdullah Al-Saud, saying they confirmed that “neither the Saudi government, nor senior Saudi officials, nor any person acting on behalf of the Saudi government, provided any support or encouragement for these attacks”.

Cops escort ‘drunken’ pilots off their plane

TWO pilots were arrested at Glasgow Airport on Monday afternoon on suspicion of being drunk, shortly before they were set to fly a transatlantic passenger jet to Toronto. Concerns over their behaviour were raised by staff on the Air Transat A310, who were preparing for 250 passengers to board. Police officers arrested the men, aged 37 and 39, on suspicion of being “impaired through alcohol”. The Canadian airline confirmed the arrests - they appeared

at Paisley Sheriff Court later that day - and said passengers had been put up in hotels while alternative flights were arranged for Tuesday. A spokesman said: “We will await the results of the investigation and judicial proceedings before making any further comments. “The safety of our crews and passengers is, and will remain, a top priority at Air Transat.” Passengers who complained on social media about being delayed were told by the airline: “For operational

reasons, we have no choice.” A source said: “I understand the pilots and other cabin crew were on the plane. They had started to do their checks and were preparing for boarding. “It is claimed that other members of staff noticed their behaviour was odd and reported them to the police because they thought they’d been drinking. “Obviously, you can never take any chances with that kind of thing - and the cops soon arrived on the aircraft to investigate.”

Water bills are going up… by a tiny drop! AFTER three years of water prices being frozen, Santa Cruz Town Hall says they will be increased by 1.6% this year throughout Tenerife.

The new tariff was confirmed by Dámaso Arteaga, Councillor of

Community Welfare and Public Services, who said the amendment will be effective before the end of the year, once it has been approved by the Price Commission of Canaries. Regarding domestic consumption, the average per household is currently 16.014cu/m every two months. It will cost just 0.52 euros extra for those

periods, and an average of 3.13 euros a year. “That’s less than the cost of a coffee every two months,” said Arteaga. In the case of nondomestic consumption, the average is 25.76 cu/m per two months, which adds up to 65.06 euros per quarter. The increase takes it to 66.07 euros, which is just 1.01 euros more

every two months, or 6.06 euros a year. “It’s a very heavy climb,” said a tongue-in-cheek Arteaga. Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez said the city Council was obliged to revise the tariff because of the contract signed with water provider Emmasa, which states that the IPC must be passed annually.

As it had done in the last three years, the company has claimed the consistory 1.6 million. “The file is processed and is being analysed for its justification,” said the Mayor. “Nothing is concluded in concrete yet.” Arteaga defended the “release” in the agreement signed with the company to make several investments.

Among them, he cited the 800,000 euros for the pumping station San Andrés, and 400,000 euros of Cabo Llanos micro-tamices. “These are two performances by Sacyr (a multi-national services company) in 2016 that the citizens will be able to save,” he said. Besides other projects that are under way.

JAPANESE conglomerate SoftBank is buying the Cambridgebased British company which designs microchips for iPhones in a £24.3bn deal.

ARM Holdings, the UK’s most valuable tech company, supplies the technology for Apple and Samsung mobile phones, and SoftBank has offered £17 for every share. The ARM board has recommended shareholders accept the offer - which represented a 43% premium on its closing market value of £16.8bn last Friday. SoftBank has pledged to preserve ARM’s existing management team, maintain its headquarters in Cambridge, at least double the number of employees in the UK over the next five years and also increase its overseas workforce. It is the 10th-largest UK merger or acquisition ever, according to the Institute for Mergers, Acquisitions and Alliances. And new Chancellor Philip Hammond welcomed the deal saying:

22nd July - 28th July 2016

Arm and a leg for microchip magic

“This £24bn investment would be the largestever from Asia into the UK. It would turn this great British company into a global phenomenon. “Just three weeks after the referendum deci-

sion, it shows that Britain has lost none of its allure to international investors.” But the deal is not all sweetness and light because ARM co-founder, Hermann Hauser, now a partner at Amadeus

Capital, said in a tweet that the deal represented a “sad day” for the UK’s technology sector. The agreement was announced following warnings that the UK would not be able to attract overseas invest-

ment if it left the EU. Prime Minister Theresa May said when she launched her leadership bid that she was committed to “defending” British companies from foreign takeovers which were not in the national interest. Experts have cautioned that the takeover could lead to a “braindrain” if ARM Holdings’ businesses were moved out of the UK. Professor Mark Skilton, from Warwick Business School, warned: “The concern of braindrain and ARM business moving from the UK must be considered in this equation, based on its know-how and leadership in chip design.” But ARM chairman Stuart Chambers said: “The board of ARM is reassured that it will remain a very significant UK business, and will continue to play a key role in the development of new technology.

“SoftBank has given assurances that it will invest considerably in the business, including doubling the UK headcount over the next five years, and maintaining ARM’s unique culture and business model.” Masayoshi Son, chairman and chief executive of SoftBank, said: “We have long admired ARM as a world-renowned, highly-respected technology company that is, by some distance, the market-leader in its field. “We invest to capture the very significant opportunities provided by the ‘Internet of Things’. “This investment also marks our strong commitment to the UK, and the competitive advantage provided by the deep pool of science and technology talent in Cambridge.” But Mr Son made it quite clear that he was not driven to invest in ARM because of Brexit. “We did not use this as an opportunity to buy cheaper,” he stressed. “Brexit did not bring us any discount.” In fact, ARM has seen its share-price rise since the referendum and has not been affected much by the fall in the value of sterling.

Wash your hands of deadly E. coli disease MIXED salad leaves could be the source of an E. coli outbreak which has killed two and infected more than 150 people in the UK. And that’s why shoppers have been warned to wash these leaves thoroughly.

Public Health England is still trying to establish the exact cause, but many of those struck down by the E. coli O157 bug had eaten pre-packed salad, including rocket leaves. The infection can cause bloody diarrhoea and abdominal pain, and people usually notice symptoms three to four days after they have been infected. But symptoms can start any time between one and 14 days afterwards, and last for up to two weeks. Some people will have no symptoms, but others can develop serious complications and will need medical help. Public Health England says the strain involved is likely to be imported, possibly from the Mediterranean area. To date, it has been informed of 151 cases 144 people in England, six in Wales and one in Scotland. Of these, 62 needed hospital care and two

patients died, and most of the England E. Coli cases were clustered in the South West. The PHE’s Dr Isobel Oliver said: “All foodsample results to date have been negative for E. coli O157. But it’s important to be aware that where food has been contaminated with E. coli O157, it is not always possible to identify the bacteria on food testing. “As an additional precautionary measure, we have advised a small number of wholesalers to cease adding some imported rocket leaves to their mixed salad products, pending further investigations.” People can help protect themselves from possible infection by washing their hands before eating and han-

dling food, and by thoroughly washing the vegetables and salads they are preparing to eat- unless they have been pre-prepared and are specifically labelled “ready to eat”. E. coli O157 is found in the gut and faeces of many animals, particularly cattle, and can contaminate food and water. But O157 outbreaks are rare compared with other foodborne diseases. The PHE was first alerted to the outbreak at the end of June, when a spokeswoman for Health Protection Scotland said: “We are supporting Public Health England and working with them on this issue. “We would encourage people to follow the advice that has been issued.”

Avoiding E. coli infection *Wash hands thoroughly after using the toilet, before and after handling food, and after handling animals *Remove any loose soil before storing vegetables and salads *Wash all vegetables and fruits to be eaten raw *Store and prepare raw meat and unwashed vegetables away from ready-to-eat foods *Do not prepare raw vegetables with utensils which have also been used for raw meat *Cook all minced meat products, such as burgers and meatballs, thoroughly *People who have been ill should not prepare food for others for at least 48 hours after they have recovered.

Ant … and decked!

SOME adult male ants ensure their rivals are polished off by smearing them with bodily fluids - effectively marking them for assassination by worker ants. A new study has discovered that the ants use an ingenious, yet sneaky, way to despatch potential mating rivals for the nest’s queen. For the first time, adult males have been observed targeting young ants, fresh out of the pupa, with a kiss of death.

The adult ants clutched their victims with their mandibles, then marked them with a mixture of faeces and other substances. This combination attracted worker ants, who bit the victims and pulled them apart. “They let the workers do the dirty job of finishing off all the rivals,” said Professor Jurgen Heinze, at Germany’s University of Regensburg. One marked ant managed to sneak past the workers, however, and

19 CW Young girls are much smarter than the boys News

22nd July - 28th July 2016

painted a target on the older male as revenge. The counter-attack worked, and the older male was killed. Questions remain about why the ants outsource their killing, and Prof Heinze added: “We know that in other species, older males sometimes fail to kill rivals and will then be overthrown.” His research team’s interest came about after after they discovered a colony of ants with just one adult male in residence. Yet scat-

tered around the nest were the dismembered corpses of 11 young males. That inspired them to install cameras in the nests of 10 colonies of a single Cardiocondyla species, in Queensland, Australia. But the researchers are still puzzled about why the adult males don’t just do away with their rivals themselves. The study results are published in the Entomological Science journal.

IT seems a bit farfetched, but the Save the Children charity says that 25% of young boys in England, totalling 80,000, who completed their initial primary school year struggling to speak a full sentence or follow instructions, didn’t always catch up with their education. In fact, says its report, based on a University of Bristol study, boys are nearly twice as likely as girls to have fallen behind by the time they even start school. A Department for Education spokesperson said: “We are making a significant investment in the early-years’ sector.” The report compared the scores of girls and boys in the early language-and-communication goals of the “Early Years Foundation Stage” (EYFS) assessment, which is taken at the end of Reception (first primary school year) by all pupils in England. Children are expected to be able to listen and express themselves effectively, showing awareness of listeners’ needs. They should at least be able to listen to simple instructions and answer “how?” and “why?” questions. Overall last year, 25% of boys were unable to meet these requirements, compared with 14% of girls. But for those on free school meals, the difference was more stark, with 38% of boys not meeting the standard, against 23% of girls. The report found that there was no area in England where boys were outperforming girls in early language skills, on average. The gap between the EYFS scores of boys and girls was widest in St Helens, Merseyside, where 31% of boys did not reach the expected level, compared with 14% of girls. The narrowest gap was in Richmondupon-Thames at 5%. Here, 11% of boys did not meet the standard against 6% of girls. The report said it was

not clear whether this early gender gap was the result of biological differences and rate of development, or social processes. But it quotes earlier research, suggesting girls are more likely to be able to develop the behaviour and attributes, such as persistence, independence and flexible thinking, which enable them to learn. It also highlights how girls outperform boys at every level of education. The report concludes: “We cannot wait for disadvantaged children and boys to get to school before they receive the support they need. “By this time, many will have already fallen behind, with negative consequences for their childhoods, school attainment and life chances. “We must invest in the best early-years’ provision, led by early-years’ teachers and supported by skilled staff at all levels, particularly in the most deprived areas.” Gareth Jenkins, Director of Poverty at Save the Children, said: “In England, too many children, especially boys, are slipping under the radar without the support they need to reach their potential. “They’re falling behind before they even get to school, and that puts their life chances at risk. In 2016, this is unacceptable. A whole generation of boys is being failed.” A Department for Education spokesperson said in response: “The number of qualified staff is rising, with more trained graduates in the workforce, and a record number of providers rated Good or Outstanding. “This investment is paying off. Latest figures show that more than 80% of children are reaching the expected communication-andlanguage skills by the age of five. “But we will continue working with the sector until every child gets the high-quality education he or she deserves.”

Business

By Mariano Zunino Siri

Earlier this year we were bombarded with information about Panama papers, offshore companies and bank accounts in countries of low taxations rate. I have received some more emails and questions on this recently, so I think now is the right time to revisit this topic.

First of all it is necessary to recall that it is completely legal to have an ac-count abroad and it is also legal to set up a company in a country of low taxation. The problem comes when the owner of the bank account or the beneficial owner of the company does not inform the Tax Office of the country where he is resident about the incomes he had abroad. It is supposed that if you are resident in Spain you have to declare all your world-wide Income Tax in this country. Summarising, not all the cases of the so-called “Panama-papers” mean fraud. OFFSHORE ENTITIES: The term offshore company is used in different ways. These companies are usually based on islands (that is

WHAT IS AN OFFSHORE COMPANY?

why the term “offshore” is used) although many of them are located in mainland, such us Delaware (USA), Andorra. Basically it refers to a legal entity (commercial company) incorporated or registered in an offshore financial centre (also called “tax haven”). The offshore financial centre is a country or ju-risdiction that provides financial services to non-residents on a tax rate much lower than the tax rate of the domestic country.

TAX HAVEN: The most popular tax havens are Bermuda, British Virgin Island, Cayman Island (among others). There are intermediate countries (Hong Kong, Singapore) and also other special tax regimes within the EU like Ireland, Netherlands and even the UK (in some cases). In general terms, offshore companies are companies exempted of taxation within their jurisdiction (providing that they do no trade within such

jurisdiction) called IBC (International Business Companies) usually incorporated in countries like Panama. CHARACTERISTICS OF AN OFFSHORE COMPANY: in basic terms, 1) it is not subject to taxation on its home jurisdiction, 2) it is created to promote business stimulation (pay less taxes, banking facilities), 3) the regulation is more flexible than in a developed country. The most important feature is the limited amount of

information available to the public and especially to the domestic country of residence of the beneficial owner. In the case of Spain and other EU countries there are Double Taxation Treaties (i.e.: Panama-Spain, whose Treaty was in vigour since 2011) by which it is agreed between the signing members to exchange information. Those countries, then, are not technically considered tax haven due to the possi-bility of exchange information, if requested. OFFSHORE COMPANIES ACTIVITIES: Offshore companies are used for various commercial and private purposes, some legitimate and others not (criminal purposes, tax fraud, money laundering). More than 20 years ago many UK residents used to incorporate an offshore company in Gibraltar or Jersey Islands to buy a property in Spain (even nowadays this system is still used). In these cases the activity or the origin of the funds were completely legitimate (generally used by retired couples to buy a second residence in a resort place) being the outcome of the incorporation of such company

22nd July - 28th July 2016 i.e.: to avoid the payment of high inheritance taxes and tedious inheritance proceedings. Due to the change of legislation during the last 20 years, this type of mechanism is no longer recommendable (although many advisors consider that it is a good system to save taxes). This matter is to be developed in another blog as it exceeds the matter of this one. REGULATIONS: The use of this type of companies incorporated in a tax haven is controversial due to the opaque nature of many of their businesses and because they are used to keep confidentiality of transactions and indi-viduals. Intermediate uses of offshore companies (such as investments funds) could be considered legitimate or illegitimate depending on the cases. Nowadays due to the Regulation and Directives of the EU and laws in vigour in such EU countries added to the signature of Double Taxation Treaties with countries with low taxation (meaning the exchange of information) the possibility of finance illegal activities is becoming more and more difficult. That is why not all companies incorporated in a low tax ju-risdiction countries must be necessary involved in illegal activities. MARIANO E. Hotel Bahía Duque Five new wind farms is simply Excellent planned for Tenerife TENERIFE’S Hotel Bahía Duque has received the Excellence in the Canary Islands Tourism Award from the regional government this week.

The jury, under the chairmanship of Canarian Minister Maria Teresa Lorenzo, rated the hotel as the Archipelago best.

Also, the Centres for Arts, Culture and Tourism (CACT) of Lanzarote won the Canary Islands award for the Best International Projection, according to the Ministry of Tourism. The Awards’ jury valued the Bahía del Duque - the first luxury hotel to open in the Canaries - as the best for being a pioneer in implementing new concepts of tourism products.

These included more personalised and individualised services such as a butler, in the style of luxury hotels worldwide. The Costa Adeje hotel, which opened on 20th November 1993, has recently been described as “a gamechanger” by Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe. “This hotel changed the way we thought and acted as a tourist resort,” he added.

THE Canarian Government has approved a project for five new wind farms in Arico and Granadilla de Abona municipalities, which will have a total capacity of 97.15 megawatts. Specifically, the government has given the go-ahead for the construction of four wind-farm projects in Arico (total capacity 78.75mw), and one in Granadilla (18.4mw). In addition, the pro-

cess of tendering the construction must begin within six months. The regional government’s approval is part

of its strategy work, which is committed to the implementation of renewable energy in the islands.

Celebrity MasterChef BBC1, 20:30

Celebrities compete in a contest of culinary skill. It’s the second semi-final, and the remaining six celebrity cooks continue to battle for the MasterChef title. For their first task, each of the six benches in the MasterChef kitchen contain the ingredients and recipe to make a different classic dish from around the world, including chicken kiev, a Portuguese fish stew, lamb koftas and queen of puddings. To stay in the competition, the celebrities must pick a bench at random and then cook the dish that’s on it. Next, the remaining five celebrities face their most daunting challenge yet - to prepare a fivecourse dinner for the Chelsea Pensioners in celebration of HM the Queen’s 90th birthday. However, they won’t be cooking their own dishes. They will be cooking the menu of Nigel Haworth of Michelin-starred Northcote Manor.

Fixing Dad BBC2, 22.00

Geoff was an overweight, over-worked night security guard, close to having his foot amputated and resigned to a premature death due to a catalogue of dangerous conditions linked to type 2 diabetes. His sons decided it was time to step in. Documentary film-makers Anthony and Ian Whitington turned their cameras on their dad in a last-ditch attempt to save his life. There are no quick fixes as they battle to overhaul every aspect of Geoff’s destructive lifestyle, from poor diet to bad habits, ingrained negativity and superhuman stubbornness and set him the challenge of cycling 100 miles. But the brothers won’t give up. With their humour, support and determination, they show that those we love make us strong and that a life we love is worth fighting for.

Fake or Fortune? BBC1, 20:00

Delaroche. Art series with Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould. The team have been called in to investigate a painting in Castle of Park, a grand house in Aberdeenshire now run as a bed and breakfast by Becky Wilson. The painting once belonged to Becky’s late husband Neil, an art dealer, who always believed it was a lost masterpiece by 19thcentury French artist Paul Delaroche. It cost just £500, and Neil had tried to convince experts that the detailed painting of a royal lady and her attendants was an important missing work. He was about to conduct further research when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, and he passed away in 2014. Becky contacted the Fake or Fortune team to say she and her children would love to know if Neil was right about the painting - if it is by Delaroche, then it is worth an estimated £50,000.

Filtered photos, push-up bras and enhanced profiles are just a few of the things that can get in the way of singletons finding ‘the one’. But what happens if we’re stripped of everything? Could picking a partner based solely on the naked body and animal magnetism help us find our perfect mate? In each episode, two new singletons join host Anna Richardson as they seek to choose a date from a selection of six naked people, who will be revealed to them one body part at a time. Round by round, they whittle these six naked suitors down to one, based solely on pure physical attraction.

This fascinating observational documentary takes viewers inside the world of ten fouryear-olds as they meet in a nursery. But this nursery is rigged with cameras to capture every glance, ever whisper, every tussle, and all the raw emotion as these children take their first tentative steps towards independence in a world without parents, providing a unique insight into this pivotal stage of childhood. With their parents watching everything close by on monitors, the ten children encounter one another for the first time in October and they meet again in May. Scooters are fought over. Beads are shared. Allegiances are formed and tears are shed. The programme observes the action minutely as the children make and break friendships, struggle to share and to stand up for themselves, and ultimately find their place in this new social group. Overseeing all the action are two leading scientists, educational neuroscientist Dr Paul Howard- Jones and developmental psychologist Dr Sam Wass.

Inside The Factory: Cereal

22nd July - 28th July 2016

T u esday

BBC2, 20.00

Cherry Healey and Gregg Wallace come together to give viewers exclusive access to some of the biggest factories in Britain, in this second series of Inside The Factory. Over the course of six episodes they’ll take viewers on a guided tour of the production lines that operate 24 hours a day to make some of the UK’s favourite products on an industrial scale. Every morning in Britain we get through over one and half million bowls of cornflakes. In Cereal, Gregg will be on the factory floor at Kelloggs’s biggest factory near Manchester, which is the single largest producer of breakfast cereal in Europe. We’ll see Gregg receiving corn fresh off the boat from Argentina and following its journey as it is cooked, milled and flavoured to become Crunchy Nut Cornflakes. He’ll discover how the factory can produce more than a million boxes of cereal every 24 hours and distribute them all over the UK, Europe and across the globe, as far away as Malaysia. Meanwhile Cherry Healey looks beyond the factory floor to find out why many vitamins are added to breakfast cereal and the resultant health benefits of doing so. She also discovers the effect that skipping breakfast has on our cognitive function and she follows the production of the nation’s best-selling cereal, Weetabix, learning how every single grain of wheat that is milled for these wheat biscuits is grown within a 50 mile radius of the factory. And historian Ruth Goodman looks at how breakfast cereal was invented as a healthy alternative to the average Victorian household’s mind-boggling breakfast feasts. Ruth will also discover the effect of nostalgia, with the six top selling cereals in the UK today all invented more than 30 years ago.

Imagine…Georgia O’Keeffe: By Myself BBC1, 22.45

Alan Yentob heads to New Mexico for Imagine….Georgia O’Keeffe: By My Self. In the pioneer days of the late 19th century, a slight young girl from the windswept prairies of Wisconsin dreamt of becoming a painter. Always determined and solitary, but with a great hunger for life, she set off alone to study. In 1916 she was swept up in the wild bohemian world of modernist New York. Georgia O’Keeffe shot to notoriety posing nude for her older lover, Alfred Stieglitz, in some of the 20th century’s most famous portraits. Her own unforgettable, voluptuous flower forms were at once associated with a shocking and vibrant expression of femininity - an association that she found limiting and denied. However the sensuality of so much of her work, even at its most abstracted, is what makes her art so distinctive. A dramatic shift to New Mexico saw her shake loose from the city and create a startling new imagery of skulls in the desert, rocks and landscapes under a brilliant bright blue sky. She is an American icon, and among the first to live a woman’s life on her own terms - as a great artist. Now, 30 years after her death, to coincide with a major Tate show, Imagine tells her story, through film of her charting her own progress through life, through her outspoken letters, especially the many thousands to and from Alfred Stieglitz, through his photographs, her paintings, and interviews with her surviving relations and artists who have fallen under her influence. We visit the farm where she was born, the New York college where she studied back in 1906, the skyscraper hotel where she lived with Stieglitz, Lake George where she often felt suffocated but did much of her most beautiful work and the legendary landscapes of New Mexico, with her two extraordinary houses there. We find an inspiring, honest and witty woman, and a truly original artist.

Nowhere is more strange and mysterious than this prehistoric paradise, where water dominates the land and life has to play by different rules. From hyper-intelligent parrots that play in the snow, daredevil ducklings who must feed in white water rapids, and giant carnivorous snails with 6,000 teeth ready to shred the next meal, this episode presents the story of New Zealand’s resilient pioneers. Only here can you find death-defying frozen insects that defrost to come back from the dead; penguin cities that thrive in the dwarf forest; the normally nocturnal Kiwi hunting on the beaches in daylight; and when darkness falls in the wet Fiordland, glow worms that use their bioluminescent beauty to lure insect prey, forming incredible constellations of lethal fairy lights.

Hugh’s War On Waste: The Battle Continues

22nd July - 28th July 2016

T h u r sday

BBC1, 21.00

Hugh’s War On Waste continues, and he’s got two new massive corporate targets in his sights. This time he’s taking on Amazon, for the amount of packaging it produces; and the coffee shop giants, Starbucks, Costa, and Caffe Nero, for a recycling scandal that most of us never even knew existed. In the UK we throw away a staggering 2.5 billion cardboard coffee cups every year*. But our growing caffeine addiction brings with it a dark secret. Virtually none of these discarded cups end up being recycled. In fact, 99 percent of them are sent to landfill or incineration.** Hugh discovers that part of the reason for this is that most people assume that their coffee cups do get recycled - and don’t even know that there is a problem. Internet shoppers know the frustrations of excess packaging, and when Hugh asks his online supporters who the worst offender is, the answer’s clear: it’s Amazon. Hugh’s hoping that he can build on the successes his battle against food waste is having on the supermarkets. Last year he uncovered the shocking amounts of food that was being thrown away on British farms because their produce didn’t fit the supermarkets’ strict cosmetic standards. But since 300,000 people signed his pledge to end this waste, all of the major supermarkets have taken steps to increase the amount of ‘ imperfect’ veg they now sell - some of them introducing brand new ‘wonky’ ranges designed to get people engaged with the issue, and others deciding to relax their general cosmetic standards across some veg lines. And the UK’s biggest food redistribution charity, Fareshare, has told Hugh that since his last programmes went out, donations to them have increased by a staggering 60 percent, meaning that an extra 50,000 people every week are being fed - with food that would otherwise have ended up in a bin. After weeks of chasing Amazon, Hugh finally gets access to one of its biggest UK distribution centres and meets its global packaging expert from America. But will they actually commit to change? And when the coffee giants seem shy of coming forward to tackle their waste crisis, Hugh takes to the streets in a coffee cup covered battle bus - and the issue suddenly goes viral.

Series exploring how the expansion of railways in the Victorian era transformed Britain. Historians Ruth Goodman, Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn visit Beamish in County Durham to examine how railway companies began to develop ways of moving people, rather than just stone, coal and iron, around the country. The comfort of the early passenger wagons are put to the test. The team then visit a refreshment room, discover the downside of compartment-only carriages and investigate how travellers made do without modern conveniences. There is also a look at the impact of railway construction on cottage industries, the important role of the train guard, and the harsh life of navvies who grafted tirelessly to lay the miles of track.

22nd July - 28th July 2016

Happy Days are over for The Fonz creator FORMER journalist Garry Marshall, who directed Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride, has died in a California hospital at the age of 81.

Marshall, whose early hits included TV shows Happy Days, Mork and Mindy and Laverne & Shirley, died of complications from pneumonia, after a stroke. Henry Winkler, who starred as The Fonz in Happy Days, tweeted that Marshall was “larger than life, funnier than most, wise and the definition of friend”. Marshall began his entertainment career in the Sixties, selling jokes to comedians and writing sketches for a number of shows, including The Lucy Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show. His first show of his own came in 1970 when he and his then writing partner, Jerry Belson, turned Neil Simon’s

Caine’s mutiny over real name Broadway hit The Odd Couple into a sitcom starring Jack Klugman and Tony Randall. It ran for five seasons and was the start of a stellar TV career for Marshall who, in 1979, had three of the top five comedies on air. The seasoned writer then turned to films, beginning in 1984 with The Flamingo Kid, which he wrote and directed. It starred Matt Dillon in a coming-of-age story. Garry later moved

over to full-time directing and attracted big names for his films, including Tom Hanks in Nothing In Common (1986), Overboard, starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell (1987) and Beaches with Bette Midler (1988). He reached another stage of stardom with Pretty Woman, a 1990 smash-hit starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. The director also did the occasional spot of acting himself, using

Len’s Dancing days days nearly finished STRICTLY Come Dancing judge Len Goodman is quitting the show after leading the panel throughout the show’s 12year run on BBC TV. But not just yet!

The next series of the ballroom dancing competition, when he will again be accompanied by fellow-judges Darcey Bussell, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood, will be the 72-year-old’s swansong. He said in a statement: “In 2004, I was asked to take part in a brand new BBC Saturday-night show, and who would have thought me, old Len Goodman, would still be part of this amazing series more than 10 years on? “This adventure began when I was 60, and now that I’ve reached my seventies, I’ve decided

after this year it’s time to hand the role of head judge to someone else.” He added: “It is an honour being part of the wonderful Strictly Come Dancing family, and I’m looking forward to my last series very much - and to whatever comes next.” Goodman’s famous catchphrases include: “It’s a 10 from Len”, “pickle my walnuts” and “se-vennnn!” He has also served as a judge on the American version of the show, Dancing With The Stars, but he left the US production last year

because of his gruelling Strictly schedule and the birth of his grandchild. But Goodman, who is definitely not retiring, will continue his music and chat show on Radio Two. The BBC said it was too early to comment on any speculation about who would replace him for the 2017 series. Strictly Come Dancing had an average audience of 10.2 million for its 2015 series, which was won by former boy-band star Jay McGuinness, from The Wanted.

his New York accent and gruff delivery in colourful, supporting roles, which included a casino boss in Lost in America and a crass network executive in Soapdish. Garry once said: “In the neighbourhood where we grew up, the Bronx, you only had a few choices. You were either an athlete or a gangster, or you were funny.” He leaves a wife, Barbara, and three adult children.

SIR Michael Caine changed his name by deed poll because he kept getting delayed at airport security.

The actor’s real name, Maurice Micklewhite, was on his passport. But the 83-year-old star found himself being asked about it constantly by airport staff. He told The Sun: “I changed my name when all the stuff started with ISIS and all that.” Of his airport experiences, he said: “Security would say, ‘Hi Michael Caine’, and, sud-

denly, I’d be giving him a passport with a different name on it. I could stand there for an hour so I changed my name.” Sir Michael abandoned his birth name in 1954 when his agent told him he had to find a new one quickly. The actor was speaking to him from a Leicester Square telephone box. He looked around for inspiration and noticed that Humphrey Bogart’s The Caine Mutiny was being shown at the Odeon, so he decided to change his name to Michael Caine. Sir Michael is currently starring in Now You See Me 2.

By Vanessa Vee SOMETHING a little different this week … I usually write about places to which we can travel directly from Tenerife, but I just can’t resist making this an exception to the rule.

And all it entails a cheeky little flightchange in neighbouring Gran Canaria. Madeira is a popular holiday destination at any time of the year, and around a million people visit this wonderful patch of Portugal annually. The island lies just south of the Azores

39 CW

Madeira’s simply magnificent!

and is a place I love to visit - quite a few times, actually - and mostly via cruise ship. It lies on the Gulf Stream and enjoys year-long mild temperatures, with a low of 66° in January, rising to highs of 78° in August and September. Come to think of it, Madeira is a mild sort of a place: chilled, relaxing and welcoming. It was claimed by Portugal in the 15th century and has been part of the country ever since, although it is now an autonomous region. Those wishing to find the best Madeira holidays will be interested to know that it is, technically, part of an archi-

pelago, approximately 300 miles from Africa and 600 from Europe. This comprises a series of volcanic islands which appeared 20 million years ago, and Madeira was one of the last to present itself. Its capital, Funchal, is in the south of the island and an area I love to visit. It is a 500-yearold city, resting in an enormous, geological amphitheatre that looks as though it is chiselled into the rock upon which it stands. The dramatic combination of Madeira’s coasts and volcanic highlands provide holiday-makers with the sight of magnificent landscapes to gaze

upon in wonder. Tourism accounts for over 20% of Madeira’s GDP (a broad measurement of a nation’s overall economic activity), and most visitors hail from Germany, the UK, the Portuguese mainland and Scandinavia. Conversely, most of the Portugese population in Britain actually come from Madeira. The island takes food seriously, and eating out there is a delight. Seafood dishes, as you would expect on an island, are always a good bet. For meat lovers, Espetada is a must-try: beef chunks, marinated for hours in wine,

vinegar and olive oil, then grilled over fragrant wood chips. The local wine, fortified and known simply as Madeira, comes either dry or sweet and complements the local specialities superbly. Soak up the fascinating demonstrations of how they produce the notable Madeira wine in one of the many bodegas dotted around Funchal. At Monte, the fashionable hill town of Madeira, the magnificent gardens surrounding the château-like Monte Palace demand a visit. And after wandering around the town church, we walked down the stairs and saw

two white-clad “chauffeurs” with straw hats, waiting for tourists to take a sledge ride. It all sounds a little crazy but it’s not really. Basically, take the cable-car up - not for the faint-hearted, I must warn then queue to load yourself into a large wicker “basket”, which carries you back down! The baskets are handled by two Madeirans, dressed in traditional costume, who steer the baskets as they glide along the roads on runners. Your life is basically in their hands, but the trip is an absolute “must” if you visit this beautiful island.

Your car documentation

By Emma at Motorworld

MOST people are aware that cars, if more than four years old - hire cars two years must not be driven without a current ITV, which is the Spanish equivalent of the MOT test. Following the recent

strike by the APPLUS ITV chain of testing stations, this has caused problems for many drivers throughout the Canaries, although, thankfully, it is now over. Many people would not consider driving a car if it were not roadworthy, or, indeed, without an ITV. Lots of you believe that if a sticker says, for example, May 2017, you have the whole of that month to get yours tested, but that is not the case. The exact date of expiry will be shown on the reverse of the Ficha Técnica, while the stick-

er displays the month only. Remember, a car must only display one sticker, not several, because ITV stations remove the current sticker, regardless of whether it has run out or has time remaining. There was a recent case in Gran Canaria, in which a 33-year-old woman had changed the ITV sticker - falsifying the document, in other words. It came to light when police officers, on a routine check, discovered that despite displaying a “current” ITV sticker, the car hadn’t been tested for several months. Subsequently, the wom-

an was fined 540 euros for the offence. While it might be tempting to copy her, your insurance will be invalid without a genuine ITV. And should there be an accident or incident, you’ll be picking up the tab - and facing a potentially large fine. New people to the Island generally have no idea of how the Spanish system works, and buying a car can be a legal nightmare if you go it alone, or choose someone who “talks the talk” but, quite possibly, does not know the ins and outs of the transfer process.

You should always look for recommendations for reputable, long-established garages. Please don’t accept advice from people in bars who, most likely, have little or no knowledge of the legalities of these matters. You should also refrain from buying a car at the side of the road because any debts incurred by the registered owner - who may not even be the seller - will pass to you, if indeed the car is transferable. Never buy a car without first checking that it’s debt-free, unless buying from a reputable

garage, who will guarantee peace of mind, and their reputation. If you have any doubts, my advice is to walk away. And if the price seems too good to be true, there is probably a catch! Don’t lose your hardearned cash by failing to ask the pertinent questions. Make sure you feel comfortable with the garage because many come and go swiftly. And remember, your warranty will be rendered useless if you’ve bought something not roadworthy, or you’re having problems with it, mechanically.

OUR LIQUID GOLD

LGBT people are kept waiting for treatment

By Carl Pattison

By Val Sainsbury

FOR years, it has been regarded as the No.1 breakthrough in salons, yet many here still haven’t heard of it.

THE number of people undertaking treatment to change their gender has increased dramatically in the UK, with some having to wait years for treatment as a result.

Olaplex is a phenomenon, as far as the hair industry is concerned, but what, exactly, is it? It is not a conditioner or masque … it’s a bond-repair system that strengthens the hair from the inside out. It starts with product No.1, which is the bond multiplier. It enters the hair shaft, and replaces the oxygen which is naturally present. Unfortunately, this oxygen, which gives your hair its strength, is lost during colour treatments, use of heated appliances and with general damage. Using this product results in more oxygen being pumped into the hair than is naturally present, which restores shine, flexibility, and force to the hair. This prevents any further

damage. Its base is non-chemical, and is silicone, sulphate, aldehyde and gluten-free. It’s like an insurance for your hair, and can be added to colours to prevent damage during the colouring process. Product No.2 is the bond perfector. This is applied after 10 minutes - over the first product to seal in the benefits. And No.3 is your takehome treatment, to use in-between services. This will upkeep your Olaplex treatment for months. But this last product is of no use, unless you have been through the first two phases. Don’t be fooled into purchasing No.3 from

anywhere but salons, because there are many fakes being passed off as the originals. Robot was the second salon to become a registered Olaplex dealer, and we have to adhere to the company’s strict guidelines. Having had it in the salon for over 10 months, we can say, honestly, that the results speak for themselves. Salons such as John Frieda and Nicky Clark are charging a fortune for this miracle liquid. We have treatments from 40 euros, so what you waiting for? It’s time your hair was given the 5-star treatment. Then you can see, literally, your hair “turn back the clock”.

BAG THAT STYLE By Carl Pattison

WHEN was the last time you treated yourself to a new best friend?By that, I mean a new handbag!

A girls gotta have one, so what’s your current one looking like? Tired?

Worn? If so, it’s time you hunted down a new one, to match your summer outfits. There are so many styles to choose from, and a large price range. You can splash the cash - or shop on a budget but what you need to think of is practicality, and looks. Does it - and will it -

carry all your needs, and blend with your wardrobe colours? If you plan to go mad, you can’t go wrong with an Armani, Gucci or Guess handbag. They are so stylish, and never go out of fashion. If you’re on a budget, the major high-street stores offer an excellent selection. Try to go for timeless style, rather than fashionable items. This will ensure that your new bag lasts more than one season. Colours that work well with most wardrobes are the obvious blacks, but try grey as the new black, or ever-faithful white. Primary colours look great, even when they clash with your wardrobe. After all, handbags are a statement piece. So, happy shopping for your new best friend, and try not to break the bank while doing so!

Now, though, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activists warn that increasingly-long waiting times for people seeking “gender re-assignment” can be dangerous. And trans people are already reporting much higher rates of suicide and depression. A Freedom of Information Act, undertaken by The Guardian newspaper, revealed that referrals to all 14 UK genderidentity clinics (GICs) had increased, with some clinics reporting enormous surges in patient numbers. At London’s Charing Cross - the oldest and largest adult clinic - the number of referrals has almost quadrupled in 10 years, from 498 in 200607 to 1,892 in 2015-16. And a Nottingham clinic, which reported a 28-fold increase in referrals in eight years - from 30 in 2008 to 850 in 2015 - expects these numbers to increase to more than 1,000 referrals this year. The Tavistock clinic, England’s lone centre for children and adolescents, has experienced

referral increases of around 50% each year since 2010-11, with an unprecedented increase of 100% in the past year, up from 697 to 1,398 referrals. James Barrett, a consultant psychiatrist at the Charing Cross clinic, said of the rise: “It obviously can’t continue like that forever, because we’d be treating everyone in the country. But there’s no sign of that levelling off.” Average waiting times for a first appointment at a gender-identity clinic are said to be nine months for adults, and half that for children, with one in six adults waiting more than a year for treatment. Experts at the GIC in Leeds estimated that a patient referred to the service at the end of October 2015 could wait four years before his or her first consultation with a medical specialist. Louie Stafford, trans programme co-ordinator for the LGBT Foundation, was referred to the Leeds clinic in 2012 and waited two years for his first appointment. Mr Stafford warns that such long waiting times are dangerous for trans people, who already report much higher rates of depression, and have higher rates of suicide than the rest of the

population. He told The Guardian: “You’re referred from your GP, but there is no contact with any specialists or clinicians until your first appointment at the gender identity clinic. “People are completely on their own, sometimes for up to three years, dealing with issues around gender that are potentially lifethreatening. He added: “It’s not surprising that people get desperate in that time frame.” Just over 15,000 people are gender identity patients in the UK roughly 12,700 adults and 2,700 adolescents or children. Trans activists suggest there could be tens of thousands more considering medical intervention, which includes hormone treatments or surgery, leading to concerns that the NHS would struggle to meet demand. In 2015-16, the NHS in England put an additional £4.4m towards funding gender identity services. Will Huxter, chair of the NHS England gender task-and-finish group, says: “We’re keen to get waiting times down as quickly as we possibly can.” Mr Huxter says part of the problem is that there isn’t a specialised training strand that sees medical professionals emerging from training and ready to work in the gender-identity clinics. “We are working with Health Education England and the GMC (General Medical Council) about how we could improve that for the future,” he adds.

Oasis taste Cyder success

The third Cyder Cup last weekend was another roaring success. Amarilla Golf hosted and 8’ players duelled it out playing either for

Oasis Fm or Blacktower Financial Management. There was little between the sides. In hot and sunny conditions, the feeling on the course

was that Blacktower had won, but when the scorecards came in, a different story developed. Oasis Fm had done it again and snuck another

fine margin win. Their captain Roscoe said “That is now three in a row! It was a brilliant day and maybe we will let them win the next time!”

Losing captain Ally Kerr from Blacktower Financial Management countered “You are not winning this Cup again, so enjoy it!

Seriously it has been so much fun. I love this event, the day and the wonderful camaraderie. Roll on Cyder Cup 4!”

England send for Big Sam... HE’S probably the most unlikely man to rescue England’s sinking ship. But the Football Association is banking on Sam Allardyce, to do just that!

Big Sam, not the most sophisticated of leaders, with his rough, gruff ways, was the bookies favourite for the job after Gareth Southgate revealed he was not interested in replacing Roy Hodgson. Allardyce, 61, has been awarded a two-year, £3.5m-a-year contract by England’s three-man selection panel of Martin Glenn, Vice-Chairman David Gill and technical director Dan Ashworth. His most recent survival feat came last season at Sunderland, who were banking on a genuine revival of fortunes in the coming season. Alas for them, it won’t happen with Big Sam at the helm, but former Manchester United manager David Moyes, currently out of work, seems to be in the Black Cats’ frame. Allardyce won the race to be Hodgson’s replacement, beating off challenges by Steve Bruce and Jurgen Klinsmann. The 61-year-old Sunderland boss arrived at Victoria Park for his club’s first pre-season friendly against Hartlepool shortly after 6pm on Wednesday. It coincided with the emerging news that he would almost certainly succeed Hodgson, following a Football Association Board meeting yesterday (Thursday). It is a dream appointment for Big Sam, who was pipped at the post for the job by Steve McClaren 10 years ago. Allardyce, a vastlyexperienced manager with 25 years behind him, made 578 League and Cup appearances in a 21-year playing career, spent mostly in the Football League. He also had brief spells

in the North American Soccer League and League of Ireland, where he enhanced his coaching knowledge extensively. Big Sam was known as a strong, no-nonsense, central defender with good awareness, heading skills and anticipation. He was signed by Bolton from his home-town Dudley in 1969 and had nine years there, helping the club win the Second Division title in 1977-78. He spent the Eighties as a journeyman player, at Sunderland, Millwall, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Coventry, Huddersfield, Bolton (for a second spell), Preston and West Brom, where he was also assistant manager. During this time he helped Preston gain promotion out of the old Fourth Division in 1986-87. And, as playermanager in the League of Ireland, he led Limerick to the 1991-92 second-tier title, before heading for Preston to take up the No.2 post. He went on to manage a series of clubs, including Blackpool and Notts County, but it was his time spent in charge of Bolton which proved vital to his career. His efforts at Notts County actually helped

him land the Bolton job in October 1999, and it was there that he started to enhance his reputation. Having steered them into the Premier League at the second attempt, he made them a permanent fixture after two difficult seasons, and eventually guided them to European qualification for the first time in the club’s history. Other appointments followed until Newcastle came calling. Allardyce was seen as the man to stop the St James’ Park door revolving as thenchairman Freddy Shepherd sought stability. But his reign lasted just 24 games because new owner Mike Ashley decided to give disgruntled fans what they wanted, replacing him with Kevin Keegan. On to Blackburn, who were embedded in the Premier League relegation zone when Allardyce arrived in December 2008. Yet they ended the season safe and sound in 15th place. They finished 10th in his first full campaign, but new owners Venky’s dispensed with his services in December 2010. West Ham came next after Big Sam had taken a six-month break, and this was a demotion for him because they had

been relegated to the Championship. But he led them back into the Premier League immediately via the Championship play-off final. However, his defensive style of play did not sit happily with the expectations of Hammers’ fans used to all-out attack with flamboyance. And although the club finished in 10th, 13th and 12th places in the top flight, there was a parting of ways in May last year. And then there was Sunderland, where he was charged with pulling off another great escape. They were still seven points away from

safety at the start of January this year. But only champions Leicester beat them after February as Allardyce kept a top-flight relegation off his CV. Now, Big Sam is about to write another chapter in his colourful, sometimes controversial, football life. His first match in charge will be a friendly on 1st September, before the World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign begins. Meanwhile Spain has also got a new national manager, 49 year old Julen Lopetegui (below), who replaces Vicente del Bosque on a two year deal. Lopetegui played

briefly for both Real Madrid and Barcelona in his playing career, and he won one Spain cap. He has previously been in charge of Spain’s very successful Under 19, Under 20 and Under 21 teams. During this time he led the Under 21s to the European Championship title. After a disappointing Euro 2016 the national side is set for a shake up and many pundits believe that the new young kids will flourish under their old boss Lopetegui. He has been out of work for a few months after leaving Porto, where he guided them to the last eight of the Champions League. Lopetegui had been offered the Valencia job this summer and was widely expected to become the new manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Midlands sleeping giant were officially taken over yesterday, and there were strong rumours that Lopetegui would replace Kenny Jackett. But it seems the lure of the national job was too great. His first game in charge will be in a friendly on 1st September against Belgium before beginning the qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup against Liechtenstein four days later. The other teams in Spain’s qualifying group are Italy, Albania, Israel and FYR Macedonia.

Young, free And singles! SOME are young … some may be free. But they all like a game of singles, which must be why a majestic total of 84 players turned out for the Picassos Pool Bar singles knock-out last Friday.

Spread across seven different venues, with sections for Division 1, Division 2 and Ladies, they enjoyed some very competitive matches and plenty of fine hospitality. In the Division 1 section, 11 players lined up at Phoenix Bar and, though we saw some close-fought games, there was a clear, thoroughly-deserved winner. Richard, of Pas O Nadas A - also known as Daddy Cool - raced through his half of the draw with an aggregate score of 12 legs to nil, knocking in three maximums and two 13-darters along the way. More like Daddy Hot, I reckon! Things were just as hot at Sandys Bar in Los Cristianos, espe-

cially when the venue final pitched two of the league’s finest as Daniel from Gaffers faced Phoenix Bar’s Mitch. A right old dingdong followed, which concluded with Mitch sneaking through by the odd leg. He will be joined in the semifinals by fellow-Phoenix team-mate Dave Mac, who beat Peter from PSB and Spear Chuckers’ Rob as he came through the draw at Scruffy Macs. Completing the Division 1 line up will be Spear Chuckers’ Tommo, who, as a League newcomer, has been making a bit of a name for himself. A tough draw at Boothen saw him beat three of the League’s best, Joe (Gaffers), Sam (Boothen) and Tom (Scruffy Macs). An 18-player entry for Division 2, produced what is sure to be an entertaining final. And it’s fair to say that Per knows the way around his own oche after he emerged victorious at his home Picassos venue. In that final, he will meet League newcomer Allen, from Golf del Sur outfit The Tav-

He then booked his finals’ night berth by taking out one of the League’s multiple trophy-winners none other than Cafe Rood’s Luc. At Nauta Bar, no fewer than 28 ladies, with arrows in hand, did battle on three boards, and my sources report that they

all enjoyed a cracking evening. Now, it’s tough to pick out two winners in a field of 28, but a certain person told me she knew who the two ladies would be. I’m glad I didn’t take the bet because she got it absolutely spoton! So step forward Rood’s Betty and Gio, both of Pas O Nadas A, who will be delighted at securing their places for finals night,

National volleyball event returns to Los Cristianos

ARONA is this week hosting the National Beach Volleyball Championships for Under19s, the event returning to the Los Cristanos beach after 14 years. It started yesterday (Thursday), with Spain’s 36 top teams four from the Canaries - endeavouring to reach the finals tomorrow (Saturday) in the male and female categories. The official presentation of the Championships saw a plethora of officials and councillors

in attendance at the start of the week. Juan Sebastian Roque and David Perez, Arona Sports and Tourism Ministers respectively, were there, alongside Cabildo Sports Minister María del Cristo Pérez; Rafael Lopez Navajas, President of the Tenerife Volleyball Federation and Victor Morales, Communication and Institutional Relations of Coca-Cola Iberia in Roque emphasised that Arona has been, and still is, one of the main

centres for beach volleyball in the country, with a Specialised Centre for Sports Modernisation in which athletes from around the world prepare. He also said the municipality held permanent volleyball schools throughout the year, with numerous local players enjoying success in national and international competitions. This is the certainly the case of Alejandro Huerta and Oscar Jime-

nez, current Spanish Under-19 champions (also sub-21). They aspire to retain the title at home, having trained in Arona with the best players in Europe’s higher categories. But the Canarian duo face competition from fellow tinerfeños Marcelo Calderon and Rodrigo Gallardo. There are also two Canarian teams competing in the women’s event, Elena Falcon-Sheyla Gómez and Beatriz Herrera-Erika Gonzalez.

Gaffers lay early marker

AFTER an early summer break, the Direct Telecom Pool League returned to action, and it was great to welcome some new teams into the first and second divisions.

Reigning champions Gaffers A started off meaning business. They claimed the preseason Supercopa as they edged out old rivals Tenerife Hammers A. The Cup-winners were missing a couple of Harpers, but they battled all the way before Gaffers got home 7-5. The early silverware gave Gaffers some confidence (as if they needed it) and they simply blew away Dreamers A on Tuesday. The Los Cristianos crew had their finest season last time out, but they didn’t get out of first gear. Gaffers started well and it didn’t take long for them to get their first three points, with Dreamers anxious to get frames on the board. Last season, Dreamers also struggled against Gaffers, who, maybe, are just their

bogey team! But the handsome 11-1 - or 11Lee - win didn’t put them top of the league. That honour went to Exiles A, at home against Terrace Roosters. It was a bad away trip for the Roosters, who won just one frame. But it was a super start to the season for Exiles, who, by virtue of alphabetical order, sit in top spot. Only Mark dropped a game, beaten by Mario in the rout. Ben, Stash and captain Tel all picked up hat-tricks against a Roosters side who would have expected to make a winning start. Two more teams with title ambitions also put in impressive performances in their first games back. Tenerife Hammers A, last season runners-up, started their challenge against Bluebell A. who have now settled into Division One life. Hammers, always difficult to beat at home, were too strong for the visitors, restricting them to just two frame wins and taking the points comfortably. In Chayofa, Treehouse A were taking on Gaffers B, who gave a good account of themselves last season. But the home side, really fancying a title charge this season, were im-

pressive. Gaffers are good pool players, but they came up short on the night, winning just a couple of frames to give Treehouse an excellent start. Palms A were poor last season, by their own standards, and they faced a tricky opening fixture against newly-promoted Rewind Rewired. Palms lost the opening frame, but soon steadied the ship. They took the next three frames to force a lead

they held throughout. Darren chipped in with a vital win over Tony, and with Chris and Roscoe securing hattricks, Palms A started with a deserved 7-5 success. Down on Amarilla Golf, Terrace Bantams were facing old foes Phoenix Potters in their opening match. And Potters made the brighter start as Bantams carried on from last season, making mistakes and poor shot-selection. The visitors got their noses in front at 3-1, which became 5-1 swiftly. There was a brief fightback from

the home side, Marky P leading a three-frame charge. But the Potters had something in reserve. Pod, Geoff, and then Elvis Dave saw the game out to secure an 8-4 win. There are some new Division Two faces, and first up were James Hammers C, who were plain Tenerife Hammers C when they finally tasted relegation from Division One. They opened against Treehouse B and will have realised quickly that life in Division Two will not be easy. Hammers C are a scalp, and they lost a few early frames. Hammers were staring at a first-night defeat and had to dig deep. But eventually. they found their rhythm and just man-

aged to squeeze past Treehouse to take a slim win. Up at the Palms Bar, two new sides crossed swords. Palms Rebels hosting Yates Bar in a hard-fought contest. Palms raced into a 4-0 lead, which had the Yates’ lads reaching for the Jaeger! This settled the nerves and, slowly, they fought back. It must be said that the Rebels have a large squad and everyone got a fair crack of the whip on opening night. This may have opened the door for Yates, who rallied to take a draw - and a point apiece on opening night saw both teams happy. Picasso’s A had an excellent campaign last season and just fell short at the end. But they will be confident of mounting a league challenge this time around. They were at home to Exiles B, playing their first league game, and what a shock they got. Picasso’s raced out of the blocks to take a 4-0 lead after the first session, Exiles tried to regroup, but they just couldn’t buy a win on the night and 4-0 quickly became 8-0 … and then 12-0. What a way to start!

James will be able to help you with this and give you advise which suits your own needs. Building your pension pot You can see the amount of choices you have to take money from your pension pot. But to have those choices you will need to have first built up a pension pot. You might find yourself in one or more of the following

circumstances, each of which could be the potential solution to increasing the size of the pension pot you have: • You’re close to paying off your mortgage so may soon have further scope to consider an increase in pension contributions. • Your children are leaving home, easing some of your monthly financial commit-

ments. • You have old pension plans that you may wish to take advice on, as to whether or not they may be better served within a new plan. • You’ve received some inheritance that you could consider the merits of investing into your current pension pot. Do you know you get tax relief on payments you

make to a pension pot? For a basic-rate taxpayer, this means it would only cost £80 to get £100 paid into your pot. The pension changes have had a positive impact on people’s feelings towards retirement and do give them more choices to help achieve the retirement they want. How you take advantage

of the changes is up to you. But speaking to us can help you find out more about the changes or if your current circumstances mean you might be able to build up your pension pot. Sebastian & St James International Financial Advisers Limited: advice based on integrity, trust and experience.
