SCOOTER SCANDAL SOLVED!

WHAT is missing from this front-page picture? Normally, on a sunny afternoon in Tenerife, the beach-front is invaded by menacing ‘electric’ scooters on pavements. But this week saw a remarkable absence of the scooter brigade … and smiles on the faces of passers-by. Continued on Page 3

Scooter menace scuppered Continued from front Perhaps word of Monday’s meeting between the local Arona Council and scooter business renters in Los Cristianos and Las Americas spread quickly. This month’s hot topic, judging by our readers’ letters, and the huge interest shown by the community, was the scooter scandal surrounding their beaches,. As we reported last week, local councils promised to crack down on the problem. And, it seems, their words have been backed up with action. On Monday, Arona Council met with a dozen owners of companies in Arona and Adeje, who rent out the so-called electric scooters. At a fiery meeting, the Council reminded them that, according to national law, these types of vehicles can be used in pedestrian areas, only by people with disabilities. Arona Deputy Mayor Jose Antonio Reveron, who chaired the meeting, reminded everyone that the Town Hall was in the final stage of ensuring compliance with the law to guarantee the safety of pedestrians. This includes restrictions of vehicles, and a ban on bicycles on pavements. He explained why the tightening of controls on these vehicles will be enforced, because both state and local regulations make it crystal clear that only certain “vehicles” can use the pedestrian zone. He also stressed that the use of said vehicles was restricted to persons with reduced mobility, either by a temporary or permanent disability.

The Deputy Mayor also reiterated that the Arona municipality, which has tightened controls, is now in the final stages of approving a Council resolution on all pedestrian areas of the town. He made it clear that Arona has, for years, had a specific regulation on these vehicles. And since April 2015, he said, the local police had impounded over 500 “electrical scooters” - a practice that will be stepped up! Also in attendance, along with the Deputy Mayor, was José Luis González, Councillor of Works and Services; Tourism Councillor David Perez, and Finance Councillor Raquel Garcia. The Tourism Councillor said Arona had not granted any specific licences exempting vehicles from the law. He added that the

Town Planning project, a cross-council plan on the region’s public road system, will reiterate that these vehicles cannot use the public road system. Also, to avoid conflicts with other municipalities, there has been a unilateral agreement that ensures people with reduced mobility only can use scooters on the pavements. It was also announced that councils will draft a report on the existing “mobility” vehicles on the market. This will allow them to draw up regulations on what restrictions will be put in place for those qualified to use the vehicles. This will surely include road worthiness, insurance requirements, alcohol and medication limits, as well as speed regulations. Perez said: “We regret the personal circumstances, but we must

ensure security and public order. In Arona the use of these vehicles by people without mobility problems is not allowed. “This is not a new issue - it has been like this for a while. We are currently studying to develop a new municipal resolution, which includes the sanctions.” It is worth pointing out the law: in 2008, both the Municipal Traffic law and the Motor Vehicle Traffic and Road Safety of the City of Arona laws were adopted. The national law on this is covered by the Royal Decree 1428/2003, approving the General Traffic Regulations and Royal Decree 339/1990 of March 2, approving the articulated text of the Law on Traffic, Motor Vehicle Traffic and Road Safety, under the provision of Royal Decree Law 6/2015. Some details of these laws are quite revealing. For example, the small print of the RD 339/1990 essentially says that prams and wheelchairs are the only “objects with wheels” allowed on public pavements. This is meant to exclude bikes but also, presumably, includes roller skates and skateboards! In fact, this is touched upon in the RD 1428/2003. In it, Article 15 says that “using skateboards, skates or similar devices, with or without combustion engines or electric bicycles, tricycles or the like, cannot travel on the road or pavements except in the areas which are especially designed for them.” Skate parks one assumes? In addition, RD1428/ 2003 has an Article 121, which states that “on

sidewalks and pedestrian areas that allow people … vehicles used by people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs, with or without engines, can only have a speed which is the same as a human step.” Crackdowns are already being seen in Costa Adeje, Las Americas and Los Cristianos. And this week, we understand that police are doing their job on the

streets of Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas. Quite how far the clampdown actually goes, and for how long, remains to be seen. But when Arona Mayor Jose Mena was elected last year, he assured Canarian Weekly readers that he would act on this “motorised menace”. This week’s action, it seems, backs up his words.

Your Emails Dear Editor, May I, through the Canarian Weekly, enlist your help to publish the horrifying sight of large numbers of silent, single and double scooters, being rented out, mostly to holiday-makers? The pavements are extremely unsafe now to walk on because pedestrians have to keep looking behind to make sure these scooters, which are driven very fast, are not too near. Many parents are letting their children, aged 10-12 years, drive the scooters, which is dangerous. Only recently, four young men were circulating my husband’s wheelchair, shouting at the top of their voices. I understand there has been ban on the scooters in Los Cristianos, so let us hope that, with your help, a ban will be made in Las Americas and Puerto Colon, before pedestrians are injured by these scooters, which, I presume, are without insurance. When we retired here nine years ago, we had no idea that our quality of life would be ruined by not being able to walk on the pavements safely. Pauline Field

Los Cris Stab Shock TWO British men were rushed to hospital on Sunday night after suffering horrific stab wounds following an argument in Los Cristianos, which turned violent.

At around 10.15pm a brief, heated row between three men over an ex-partner of one of the assailants on Avenida San Francisco turned into a street brawl. It is understood that the fight started after the two assailants saw the victim, named by police as PF, on the street outside a row of popular bars. They stopped their car and after exchanging a few words, an unnamed man attacked the victim. Then the second person, who police say is a 41-year-old man with the initials CD, viciously stabbed PF. One source suggested it could have been as many as eight times. During this attack, a 32-year-old man, named as JT, became involved and was, subsequently, stabbed.

One witness, who didn’t want to be named, said: “It happened so very quickly. From nothing to this brawl was just a few seconds. Then one of the men produced a knife. It was really frightening.” Police were swiftly on the scene but, despite knowing the details of the main attacker, they were unable to appre-

hend him, even though they searched his address and set up roadblocks. He is still at large. The original target, PF, was rushed to Candelaria hospital, where his condition was described as critical. As we go to print, though, one source suggested that he had discharged himself from hospital,

but there has been no official confirmation of this. The second man, JT, whose injuries were not life-threatening has spent the week recovering at the Hospital Universitario de Canarias. The stabbings have stunned the community because such incidents are incredibly rare. All the four men involved were local residents and the feud is believed to be longstanding. This didn’t stop some sensationalised reporting from the British tabloid press. One person, who asked to remain anonymous said: “I’ve never seen an area empty so quickly. It was right out of the blue. “Everyone appeared to have enjoyed the Sunday afternoon and then, suddenly, this happens. Normally it’s such a quiet area and if there is something to take from this, it’s that it was an attack on their own kind. “It is not as if some random person has been attacked, or some group of guys have caused any trouble on innocent people.”

Is it a fond farewell to reina Sofia Airport?... BRAVE or controversial? That is the mixed reaction to the news that Granadilla Council is considering changing the name of the south airport.

“Sofia is no longer the Queen of Spain and the monarchy is an alien entity to the democratic processes of election of public officials and that institution.” This was the controversial statement made by Granadilla de Abona Councillor Felix Hernandez, of the Izquierda Unida Canaria (IUC) party, in a motion this week proposing to rename Tenerife’s main airport. Officially, the Queen

Sofia Tenerife South International Airport, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona,

could have a new title next year. Over nine million passengers use the airport

annually, and the proposal for renaming the airport, unveiled on 6th November 1978 by

Queen Sofia herself, does have some support. Interestingly the airport’s name was never put to a public vote and, for this reason, the proposal includes holding a referendum among municipality residents to determine a fresh name - or retain the original! The public, of course, could back the former Queen and vote to stick with the original, and some would say, classy moniker. “We propose that the new name serves to give visibility to the municipality,” said Cllr Hernandez. “But we would like citizens to approve the concept, and the naming, by either supporting this proposal or preferring a different name. But the

public must decide.” He added: “If it is decided, democratically, to replace the current name, it would still require AENA (the airport authority) to perform the necessary steps to do so.” Most of the political parties seem to be behind the move, because, said Hernandez: “What we propose is a democratic exercise in which we want to give voice to the people to move forward a proposal that has direct repercussions on the external image of the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. We are all for this.” The motion will have to wait for discussion until September … but there is a chance that nothing will change.

‘Banned’ drug leads to a deadly warning THE shocking death of his father has prompted Irishman Derek Smyth to warn Brits and Irish living in Spain, or the Canaries, to pay particular attention to any drugs they have been prescribed.

Derek spoke to Canarian Weekly this week from his home in Australia. His father, 66-yearold William - known as Billy - from Mullingar, Westmeath, had a holiday home in Torrevieja, on the Costa Blanca in Alicante. But when he was prescribed the pain-killer drug Nolotil by a Spanish GP after developing a sore shoulder - and took it for five days - he had no idea of the dangers attached to it.. Unknown to the pharmacist, seemingly, it is a banned drug in certain countries, including Britain and the Republic of Ireland because its serious sideeffects can affect some people born there, or their descendants. In April, Billy saw another GP in Spain to renew his normal medication, and told the doctor he was unable to get rid of cold-like symptoms. “He couldn’t shake a common cold and the sore throat he had, which surprised me because he never, ever complained about being sick,” said Derek, a 41-year-old businessman. who has lived in Australia for 16 years. “The GP checked him out, discovered his white blood-cell count was very low - one of Nolotil’s side-effects - and called an ambulance to take him to the local hospital’s emergency department.” There, Billy went through a series of tests and doctors found that the drug had caused toxic poi-

soning in his bone marrow, which preventing him from producing the white blood cells used to fight infection. “This is a known side-effect of the drug, which the hospital doctors said was a particular problem for people of Britain and Ireland,” said Derek. “The second GP also stated that it was ‘common knowledge’ not to prescribe this drug to such people.” Derek and his sister, Stephanie Hutchinson - who lives in Ohio flew to Spain to be with their Dad, along with other family members from Ireland. Billy, who had developed sepsis - a lifethreatening response to infection - and necrotising fasciitis (a flesh-eating bacteria) as a result of the low white-cell count, received “radical surgery” to remove the affected tissue in an attempt to save his life. Derek, still coming to terms with his Dad’s death on 17th April, said: “He remained in a coma following surgery. He developed multiple organ failure and had a colostomy, kidney dialysis and many lifesaving measures. “But he died from septic shock because of the complications

developed from taking the drug.” The son added: “We’re obviously still upset that the drug was prescribed to him. But, in fairness, it is legal in certain countries, including Spain. “There’s nothing on the paperwork to say, ‘Don’t give it to Irish people’ - it’s just common knowledge among doctors. “My Dad was there for a short time, and an Englishman was also admitted with a similar diagnosis, but I don’t know how fared. “My message is that the Irish and Brits should be cautious and think twice about what drugs they’re taking.” He added: “If they even stop for a couple of seconds, think and ask the pharmacist just in case … they could save their own lives. “In the coming days, weeks and months, there are tens of thousands leaving Ireland and heading to Spain and the Canaries for the holiday of a lifetime. “I am also aware that quite a few people from Britain and Ireland are living there as ex-pats,, and my sincere wish is that none of them will, inadvertently, take a medication that could kill them.” Billy, who retired in

his late fifties, was as healthy as could be. He loved cycling, scuba-diving and swimming, and he also

enjoyed travelling. “He went to Morocco for a holiday last year, and he stayed with me in Melbourne for a couple of months over the Christmas period,” said Derek. “And he was in great form. “He was renowned for his fund-raising activities, voluntary efforts for local clubs and civil defence, giving up his weekends to teach thousands of people how to swim and save lives. “But when he phoned me to say he’d had a bit of a sore throat for weeks and weeks, I couldn’t believe it. It just wasn’t him!” The Nolotil drug is a brand name for Metamizole, an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat mild pain such as toothaches, headaches, neuralgia, and high fever. While the drug is available in countries such

as Spain, it is banned in the UK, Ireland and other EU countries, as well as America and Australia. A spokesman for Ireland’s Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) said Nolotil had never been authorised for use in the Republic. “In addition to Spain, metamizole has been authorised and marketed under various trade names in other EU member states including Italy, Austria and Belgium,” he added. “Metamizole is authorised in these countries for the treatment of moderate or severe acute pain and high fever, which doesn’t respond to general therapeutic measures. “But it is known to be associated with a risk of blood disorders, including low white cell count (agranulocytosis).”

Rocking up to the Hard Rock Hotel THERE will be a grand, official, opening party for the eagerly-awaited Hard Rock Hotel later this year.

The 10th December bash to herald the Costa Adeje hotel will feature some “old-skool” favourite acts. Earlier this week, parent company Hard

Rock International welcomed guests to Covent Garden’s trendy Ice Tank club to announce a few more details behind the launch. The Ice Tank party welcomed industry experts and journalists - and was quite an affair: traditional Canarian canapés, spectacular cocktails, and, in true Hard Rock style,

a range of rock music enjoyed by all. December’s Tenerife party will feature performances from the Village People, Black Box, C+C Music Factory and Rozalla. In keeping with the launch of all Hard Rock hotels around the world, the evening will also feature the company’s legendary “Guitar Smash”

to mark the upmarket hotel’s opening. It comprises 624 rooms, including 260 suites, which will be split across two towers, named Oa-

sis and Nirvana. And it will combine “contemporary interiors and lavish amenities radiating style and energy”. The Rock Royalty Level, on the 13th, 14th and 15th floors of the Nirvana

Tower, will house suites offering exclusive services, such as a private concierge and VIP check-in. The hotel opens its doors to paying guests on 15th October.

Forest-fire alert AN alert for forest fires in Tenerife and La Palma has been declared by the General Directorate of Security and Emergency of the Canary Islands Government.

Tenerife and La Palma Cabildos say you cannot light fires for BBQs or other purpose in the mountains because it is deemed too risky. High temperatures

and low rainfall have created a tinderbox in the forests, and these restrictions will remain in force for the foreseeable future. And it’s not just BBQ fires being ruled out because the

burning of agricultural or forestry waste is also forbidden. Working with machinery or tools, or any equipment which can generate sparks in agriculture or forestry

areas, such as brushcutters and welding equipment, is also prohibited. In addition, firework displays in the riskzone, and in areas near vegetation where the

fire could spread, are suspended. Tenerife Cabildo will also ramp up efforts to avoid traffic on the trails and forest areas during the next few weeks.

La Teresitas to have a new hotel as well

Change the record I’VE heard Tenerife described in a million different ways. Forget the Isle of Fernando’s (why do they call it that?), Tenerife is the Isle of Rumour.

There is no place like it. Well outside of Los Angeles, or maybe Brighton, but that’s another column. I woke up on Monday morning to about 20 messages. Every one was about the same story. A few hours later I had heard another 20 different versions. It was crazy. You do get use to it doing this job. A few phone calls, a word with the odd source, swearing a chat was off the record, and an hour’s snooping later, and the facts were there to see. But that is when the hard part begins. How do you convince someone that something they believe is a pack of lies? You can write the story, add as many details as possible, and set out a timeline. But does that wash “on the street”? Over the next few days, I just had to shake my head at some of the ver-

sions still being banded around. And that’s before I started to read what was being written in the UK papers. I know that Tenerife has some magical aura for Fleet Street editors. It dates back a few generations, when all the gangsters would flee to Spain. Today, it’s all very tired and lazy. They didn’t really care that it was a row between locals. All they wanted was: “Brits stabbed in holiday hotspot”. Fear sells, kids. Off the back of it, one Red-top did a splash on the most dangerous places to go on holiday. Do they really think Tenerife is on a par with town down Baghdad? Another paper did the annual hatchet job on Veronicas. Yawn … what is this, 1992? It must really anger all the tourism ministers, who work tirelessly on our image. In 2015, there were 9,000 crimes involving knives in London. If the stabbing of two men in Los Cristianos gets them scared over the breakfast table, how will their journalists get through a morning’s commute in a city with 4,500 times more incidents?

HARDLY a week goes past without some new ideas for Las Teresitas beach, but the latest are impressive.

A “Special Plan” for the front of the beach will see about 200,000sq/m allocated for a new hotel, around five storeys high with up to 400 beds. The plan was presented by Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, who this week said the plot on which the hotel can be built is a publicly-owned, municipal corporation, while the management will be controlled by a private company. Bermudez added: “The hope is that the works will be carried out by a special management plan, to begin during the current mandate, over the next two years.” It is hoped that initial approval will be made this year, and that the final document will be signed off during 2017.

The initial investment planned exceeds 30 million euros. Ruben Henriquez, architect and technical director of Gestur, the company which designed the proposed idea, explained the plan’s details, covering 11,400sq/m of a sandy beach area. The hotel will bring

in around 200 direct jobs, said Councillors Carlos Garcinuño, Zaida Gonzalez and Jose Alberto Diaz Estebanez. There will be large, below-ground-level parking for up to 1,200 vehicles, and a commercial area. At the end of the beach, an area will be designated for outdoor sports

activities, such as a “StatePark” and climbing wall, with a landscaped area. On the promenade, there will be sports activities related to the beach, as well as a children’s play-area, and an area for nautical activities, with a bike lane along the entire rail track and a pedestrian walkway.

EU’s fine let off IN what is seen as a surprise move, the European Union has dropped fines against Spain and Portugal for fiscal breaches. But it’s hardly a let-off!

That’s because EU Economics Commissioner Pierre Moscovici suggests the move was motivated by waning support for the EU institutions. The European Commission ended a standoff with the two countries over their persistent failure to hit EU budget targets, defusing months of tension by cancelling the penalties on Wednesday. Under reinforced budget rules, the Commission could have imposed a maximum 0.2% punishment of GDP, equal to 2bn euros for Spain and more than 300m euros for Portugal. It would have been the

first such fine levied by the EU, but the issue had dragged on since May, when the commission postponed decisions because of the Spanish general election. Although warnings that the credibility of the eurozone’s postcrisis rule-book was at stake, Spain and Portugal argued against any punishment because economic growth is set to slow in Europe because of Brexit uncertainty. Following the Commission’s recent leniency to France, critics suggested the EU executive arm was making an example of weaker member states. But Moscovici said the decision recognised the tough, fiscal, consolidation already carried out in each country. He also indicated that the move was partly motivated by waning popular support for the EU institutions. “I think we took the wisest decision in eco-

nomic terms.” he said. “Even a symbolic fine would not have been understood by people … a punitive approach would not be the right one at a time when people doubt in Europe.” Madrid and Lisbon both welcomed the decision, Luis de Guindos, Spain’s Finance Minister, saying: “I was convinced there wouldn’t be a sanction. Why? For a very simple reason: to put a sanction on Spanish society would be a mistake. Spanish society has made a brutal effort.” Portugal’s Foreign Minister, Augusto Santos Silva, said it showed that Lisbon had been “in the right” by arguing that any sanctions would be unjust. Yet on Tuesday, António Costa, Portugal’s socialist Prime Minister, said it was “not looking good” for Lisbon because some commissioners were believed to be calling for fines.

THE Arona municipality this week employed 145 people who’d previously had difficulty finding long-term employment.

The new positions have been created to strengthen municipal services and improve the natural environment. Recruitment was carried out within the framework of the biennial Extraordinary Social Employment Programme, and co-funded with the Canary Islands Employment Service. The selection criteria for the newcomers, who have been hired for six months, included the low-income and jobless, who had been unemployed for over three years. This excellent new proposal will this year see 843,328.41 euros invested in the new project, including a 340,005.84-euro grant by the Canary Islands

Employment Service. Dácil Leon, the Employment and Economic Development Councillor, said: “This action allows us to support many people who have been experiencing economic and social difficulties.” The new workers, inaugurated at a ceremony in Valle San Lorenzo’s cultural centre, were congratulated by Human Resources and Youth Councillor Yolanda Mendoza, together with Yurena García, the Councillor for Environment and Beaches. The programme prioritises the hiring of people with low incomes and family responsibilities, women, the unemployed, those over 45 and people at risk of social exclusion, along with people with disabilities. The minimum requirements are that candidates are over 18 and under 65, registered as job-seekers for at least six months in the past two years, appear registered in the municipality before 18th October

2015, be targeted in the Municipal Employment Agency in the occupation requested and did not participate in the 2014-2015 Extraordinary Social Employment Programme. The performances are sub-divided into two specific programmes: recovery and improving the environment, and the support and improvement of municipal services. The first includes cleaning, improvement and maintenance of ravines, roadsides, rural roads and the coastal strip of Arona. The second programme embraces the support of administrative staff, ordinances and socio-cultural animators to improve care and service of municipal facilities, in addition to logistical support in small municipal works. Recruitment for this exercise totalled nine ordinances, 32 administrative assistants, 15 construction labourers, 70 cleaning staff, four managers and 15 sociocultural monitors.

High-speed train plan is so costly SPAIN has been ordered by the EU Commission to recover 140m euros in illegal state aid, set aside for a high-speed-train test centre which, maintains Brussels, was unnecessary.

The European Union’s powerful executive arm, which represents the interests of all EU countries, last year launched a probe into the scheme for a unique testing site near Malaga where, if completed, trains could travel as fast as 320mph. But a Commission statement said: “There does not appear to be any interest in the market to develop products that run at such high speeds. In fact, the centre was expected to generate losses throughout its entire period of operation.” The Commission’s verdict is particularly embarrassing for the Spanish authorities because the country’s 10-year construction binge sent the economy crashing in 2008. The rail test-site was to include tunnels and viaducts to simulate real-life conditions on high-speed networks. The project was approved by the then Spanish Government, which planned to apply for EU funding to complete the 358.6meuro cost.

Tax-dodge drones filling the coffers

THE Spanish tax office, using satellites and drones as magic eyes in the skies, has discovered that more than 1.69 million home-owners are not paying their fair amount.

The unmanned aerial vehicles revealed improvements to people’s houses, such as home extensions, which were not declared to the taxman. The aerial search was conducted across 4,340 Spanish municipalities, according to a re-

port in Spanish daily El Mundo. This unprecedented tax investigation, which began in 2014, has generated extra takings of 1.3 billion euros for the Land Value Tax (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles). Spain’s tax office estimates that the fraud occurred in as many as 8.9% of the houses registered on Spain’s municipal registers, or padrónes. Around 70% of the homes did not declare some kind of upgrade such as an extension or a swimming pool, but other discoveries included homes that had never even been registered. It is estimated that the padrón has increased by as much as 3% from homes the local town halls had no idea existed. When broken down into regions, the area discovered by the drones as having the most fraud was Andalusia, with 373,224 homes, followed by Galicia, 213,017 and Castilla y León with 164,141. But by proportion of dwellings, the Aragón region tops the list,

with 16.87% of all homes committing tax fraud. Spain’s tax office confirmed: “For every euro spent on the project, we recuperated 16 eu-

ros,” which, according to El Mundo, means the project cost an estimated 80 million euros to undertake. And it is still ongoing, with around an-

other 2,000 towns and municipalities yet to be checked. So either cough up, or wait until the magic eyes get you firmly in their sights!

Sea angler hooks a lucky surf-boarder

AN exhausted young Bulgarian, who spent the whole night clinging to a surf-board off southern Spain, owes her life to an angler, who happens to be an off-duty policeman. She had decided to go for a midnight dip with her board, but was unable to return to the Tarifa shore in Cadiz because of strong currents.

The terrified woman was spotted by the officer, who was fishing from a boat in the Strait of Gibraltar, three miles from the mouth of the River Jara, She was suffering from mild hypothermia. After setting off from the Los Lances beach, The unnamed woman was swept away by the currents but, miraculously, survived.

She was taken back to Tarifa port by the fisherman, and on to the local Guardia Civil headquarters, where she was treated for hypothermia. Los Lances, on the Atlantic side of the Strait of Gibraltar, creates unique wind conditions and is a favourite for kite-surfing, wind-surfing and similar sports.

Beating the risk factors ABHILASH Panda, from UNISDR (United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction), gave students at Adeje Summer University a fascinating two-hour lecture on managing and controlling risks - natural and human.

He also spoke of risk reduction, and the part heritage plays in this equation, especially in the case of tourism-dependent zones. The mandate of the United Nations and UN bodies, he said, was to concentrate their resources in developing areas, so that plans and strategies were not geared towards major developed cities, where financial and human resources already existed. He stressed that the most needy were those wanting external guid-

ance and assistance, often in conjunction with, or by encouraging, the assistance of private institutions, such as insurance bodies. The campaign to develop resilience programmes in cities began in 2010, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation (100RC). It now includes 3,200 cities and, potentially, affects one billion people. It has now adopted a strategy - the Sendai Framework - which, says Mr Panda, “is a 15-year, voluntary, nonbinding agreement, recognising that the ‘State’ has the primary role to reduce disaster risk, with responsibility being shared with other stakeholders,

including local government and the private sector”. Mr Panda adds: “It works to achieve the substantial reduction of disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods and health - and in the economic, physical, social, cultural and environmental assets of persons, businesses, communities and countries.” The speaker outlined four priorities for action: *Understanding risk *Strengthening disaster-risk governance *Investing in disasterrisk reduction for resilience (being resilient alone isn’t enough) *Build back better In other words, learn from the past, and invest in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction. Mr Panda also made special ref-

Tram protesters make their point AVENIDA Los Majuelos, in Santa Cruz, is turning into quite a famous, or infamous, address in Tenerife. Most nights, it is now filled with protesters against the new Tram Line expansion programme.

This month alone, there have been three official protest marches, and more are planned for August. One protester said: “Our demonstration against the tram line will be ignored. But not forever.” The controversial ex-

tension of Line 2, which takes the tram further west, cuts right into Avenida Los Majuelos. This will see displacement for some people, and a compulsory purchase order on some properties and areas. The most recent demonstration brought together about 1,500 people. One said: “We started in June and we have been satisfied with what we have created so far. But we will take every step to keep fighting the project.” Radio adverts, media interviews, and even distribution of leaflets in Santa Cruz have been tried. The pressure group is trying to get as many people as possible to sign a petition. And demonstrators are even

considering advertising on a tram! The group marched under the slogan “Save the Avenue Los Majuelos” and, after reading out a brief manifesto, they conducted a twokilometre walk. People of all ages, with banners, posters, whistles and Canarian flags with seven green stars, took part - including many residents of La Gallega and El Sobradillo. Even politicians joined in, including three councillors of Citizens Bogota - Evelyn Alonso, Ernesto Rosales and Antonio Blanco - along with other local “faces”. The most chanted slogans were “Guaguas (buses) yes, trams no” and “Less tram and more kindergartens”.

ISIS-funding brothers held TWO brothers, accused of sending ISIS terrorists between $2,200-3,300 every month, have been detained by armed Gardia Civil officers in Spain during a dawn raid.

Catalonia’s big threat C ATA L O N I A N separatists have escalated their battle with Madrid and threatened to push for succession from Spain - with or without official permission!

SPAIN has created its own responsible fishing label, as it seeks to become the first in the world to introduce a government certification for best fishing practices.

The government’s UNE 195006 will be awarded by Spain’s Organisation of Normalisation and Certification, known as Aenor. It will identify best practices in environment, control and socio-economic metrics, said Agriculture Minister Isabel Garcia Tejerina at a presentation. The certification will apply to the 40-strong fishing fleet, grouped under the Organisation of Associated Producers of Large-scale

and securing approval for a “unilateral disconnection” plan. It provoked a furious reaction, prompting MPs from centre-right parties to stage a mass walk-out, after labelling the vote “illegal” and “undemocratic”. “Separatists want to take us not only out of Spain and the EU, but out of the 21st century and modern democracy,” said an MP from the conservative Ciudadanos party.

Carles Puigdemont, Catalonia’s pro-separatist President, said a confidence vote would be held on 28th September to help bring the region to “the gates of independence”. The issue “remains bitterly divisive in both Spain and within the region itself ”, says The Guardian newspaper. A recent poll revealed that 47.7% of Catalans were in favour of separating from Spain,

with 42.4% against and the remainder undecided. Catalan Foreign Affairs Minister Raul Romeva told the newspaper that the Spanish Government had two options: accept the reality of Catalan independence, or “carry on doing what it’s been doing, which is denying that reality, in the belief that it can use the constitutional court and legal processes to stop it”.

Spain’s ‘best’ fishing label Frozen Tuna Fisheries, known as Opagac. Collectively, it employs a crew of about 1,400, of which 900 come from other countries.

Aenor expects Spain’s entire fishing fleet to be certified under the new rules before 2017. Spain has the world’s fifth-largest fishing

fleet, landing about 270,000 metric tons annually. And it is also the world’s second-largest producer of canned tuna, behind Thailand.

The pair, aged 32 and 33, of Moroccan origin, were arrested in the village of Arbucies, in the north-east province of Girona, near Spain’s border with France. A third sibling, also involved in the scheme,

is understood to have died in Syria, fighting alongside ISIS, after moving there with his partner and children. A total of some 10,000 euros found in the brothers’ apartment, was, presumably, set aside for the terrorists. Investigators are yet to determine when the men actually began sending money to ISIS, which is outlawed in many countries around the world, including Russia. One of the brothers is said to have worked as a painter, while the other one was a salesman.

The Public Health department of Arona, in collaboration with the Canarian Institute of Blood Donation and Hemotherapy, has arranged for a ‘Give Blood’ day. The ‘blood bus’ will be in Las Galletas, today, Friday next to the gym on Avenida Principe Felipe. Donation hours are 9am to 2pm and 4pm to 9pm.

Petrol still cheaper here PETROL prices have been slowly rising over the last six months in the Canaries. But it is still cheaper than two years ago, and, it seems, even cheaper in the western island.

On average, petrol is 4.5% cheaper in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, compared with the eastern Las Palmas province. A study published this week shows that for 95 octane petrol, the difference is 4.44%. And diesel, in the eastern province, is 4.56% more expensive than in the western-most

islands of the Archipelago. The average price per litre of diesel in Santa Cruz de Tenerife was 0.811 cents in July. In the western province, the average price of 95 octane petrol is 0.8911 cents a litre, compared with 0.939 cents in Las Palmas. This translates into more than two euros difference when filling an average 55-litre fuel tank, and 1.43 euros in the case of diesel. And there is more good news. Prices will be coming down this summer. In Spain next month, output will be 2.6% on average cheaper than in July, according to the Government’s price calculator.

Spanish satellite spy is grounded for now AFTER an 18-month delay, Spain’s Hisdesat - a joint venture between satellite company Hispasat and the Defence Ministry - has cancelled its contract with Russia’s Cosmotrans to launch Paz. It is the first Earth, radar, observation satellite in Spain, and is part of the Spanish National Earth Observation Programme (PNOTS). Hisdesat is said to be after an out-of-court solution to recover the 15m euros it has so far paid Cosmotrans. The satellite firm is already looking to launch Paz with an alternative company, which could also be from Russia. It it is also scouting US companies, who will almost certainly charge a lot more. The Paz satellite is intended to perform global observations to assist multiple military and civil applications, including rescue, maritime surveillance, tac-

tical support, border control, natural disaster management, environmental control, risk management, and counter-piracy actions. It will be placed in sunsynchronous, dawndusk orbit at a height of 514km, and has a velocity of 25,200km/h. The satellite can provide images in allweather conditions, day and night, of surface-based activities, and can perform highresolution mapping of a large geographical area. It can store up to 256GB of images and supply more than 100 images a day. Its normal revisit period is 11 days, and the on-orbit mission duration is 5½ years. Paz was earlier known as the Satélite Español de Observación SAR (SEOSAR) observation satellite. Its production and integration process was completed in Madrid in September 2013, while the launch was

scheduled for the first quarter of 2015. But the ongoing dispute between Russia and Ukraine, which led to the EU imposing sanctions on Moscow, has quashed the launch of Spain’s first spy satellite. Sector sources say that Spain will now have to choose between Russia’s state-owned Roscosmos, which uses the Soyuz rocket, or US outfit SpaceX, which

employs Falcon rockets to launch satellites from its California base. They also say that Hisdesat will probably prefer the US option. But, either way, the cost will be four times more than using Cosmotrans. Paz is part of PNOTS, which is owned by the Spanish Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism. Hisdesat, a government satellite services

operator, signed a contract with Airbus Defence and Space for the development and construction of Paz in November 2008. The total cost of the satellite’s design, development, flight and ground segments - and the launch - is estimated to be 160m euros, of which, 135m will be funded by the Spanish Ministry of Defence, and the balance by Hisdesat. As the prime contractor, Airbus Defence and Space is responsible for the development, construction, systems engineering, integration, testing, validation and location of the satellite into orbit. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor was designed and built by Airbus Defence and Space at its MadridBarajas site. The Paz programme also involved participation by 18 Spanish companies.

Canarian pensions sneaking upwards

THE number of pensions in the Canary Islands for July amounts to just a few people shy of 300,000.

But the official 299,996 total represents a 2.9% increase over the same month last year, according to the National Institute of Social Security (INSS), Ministry of Employment and Social Security. The average pension grew by 1.5%, year-onyear, and is now 835.81 euros per month. The entire public system in Spain now has 9,417,724 contributory pensions - 1.18% more than last year. More than half, specifically 5,735,483, are for retirement; Widowhood corresponds to 2,359,858; 940,193 while permanent disability and orphanhood make up the rest. Social Security spent a record 8.514bn euros this month, which was 3.09% more than in July 2015.

Canarian property sales are on the up PROPERTY sales rose 17.1% in the Canary Islands during the first quarter of the year and, nationally, prices rose an average of 7.2% against the same 2015 period.

The figures were provided by the General Council of Notaries, which determined that the sale of property in all communities grew in the first quarter of the year - except in Navarra (-15.8%) and Aragon (-2.9%) The rise in Spain’s home sales was 18.6%, largely superseded in Asturias and Cataluña, with a 29.5% growth, while the lowest was in Galicia (9.7%). Prices per square metre nationwide in the first quarter grew by 4.0%, up

to 1,297 euros, although it registered 2,190% in the Basque Country and, in the Balearic Islands and Madrid, 2,122% to 1,874 euros. Average prices contracted especially in Aragon (-5.8%), Castilla y Leon (-3.3%)

and Navarra (-3.3%). Around the national growth average, Madrid (5.0%) and Extremadura (3.4%) saw a decrease. But the greatest year increase in the average price per square metre was recorded in La Rioja (15.4%) and

Castilla La Mancha (14.6). With the exception of the latter two, the price recovery was more visible in the coastal regions and islands, with accelerations in the Balearic and Canary Islands (12% and 7.2%, re-

spectively). But this was offset by falls in Castilla y León and, above all, Aragon. Apartment sales showed a similar trend in general, Galicia growing by just 7.5% with the rest in double figures, especially Cata-

luña (23.2%), Baleares (23.4%), and, above all, Asturias (24.1%). The average apartment price per square metre slightly exceeds that of overall housing, reaching 1,418 euros. The largest increases occurred in La Rioja (13.7%) and the Balearic Islands (17%.), while the largest drops were in Castilla y León (5.4%) and Aragon (5.3%). As for mortgage lending, it increased in all autonomous regions except Aragon (-2.5%) the only one to register a decline. There were 10 autonomies below the national average of 14.4%, among them Navarra, with the lowest growth (0.1%), followed by the Canaries (5.5%) and Murcia (5.9%). The most notable increases were in the Basque Country (23.4%) and Asturias (22.7%).

Big six banks to pass ‘stress’ test FINANCIAL sources have revealed that the six Spanish banks included in the EU’s 2016 stress tests, conducted by the European Banking Authority (EBA), will pass the examination easily. Although the results will not be officially released before today (Friday), these sources confirmed that Santander, BBVA, BFA-Bankia, CaixaBank, Sabadell and Popular will get good grades in an evaluation which compares and assesses the resilience of EU banks to economic shocks. Other significant Spanish lenders not covered by the EBA test - Kutxabank, Unicaja, Ibercaja, BMN, Liberbank, Cajamar and Abanca - will have their own examination by the ECB. The methods will be similar, but the test will take into account their

smaller size and complexity. In an adverse economic scenario, BFA-Bankia will have the best Common Equity Tier 1 ratio (of close to 10%), CaixaBank, BBVA, Sabadell and Santander will be in the region of 8% to 9%, and Popular will be close to 7%. But the Popular figure does not take into account a June capital increase, which could raise its final rate to 10%. The hurdle rate in an adverse scenario is set at 5.5%, although there is no official failing figure. This is the latest in a series of stress tests conducted on the banking sector, in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015, But they will not be remembered for their ability to detect troubled lenders. This time around, the test includes 51 of the EU’s largest banks, representing 70% of the sec-

tor. And, following their latest capital reinforcement - a point regulators have insisted on - Spain’s six largest banks will pass the test. But this requirement to shore up their equity has created another problem: low profitability, which is driving investors away. Unlike other stress tests, this one is being conducted by the EBA, which is headquartered in London, rather than by the European Central Bank (ECB). The EBA has launched an improved internal control process to prevent another huge mistake like the one it committed in November 2015, when, erroneously, it placed Spanish banks’ equity levels in last place. After correcting the mistake, Spain ended up ahead of Portugal and at the same level as Ireland.

No whey - Jose? FULL dairy inspections will begin in September to determine whether there is fraud being committed by some farmers of the Islands.

Santiago Reyes, representing the Association of Cattlemen of Gran Canaria, said it is widely believed that some farms have been using cheap milk powder, imported from outside the EU, for cheesemaking. His comments came after a meeting with Narvay Quintero, Min-

ister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, and representatives of the farmers and industrial sub-sectors, which say the use of milk powder for cheesemaking is around 30%. This proves, some say, that not all Canarian cheese is produced in the Canaries. However, Pedro Molina, President of the Cattlemen’s Association of Tenerife, says that if there were some powdered milk in cheese, it wouldn’t change how the Canary Islands product is regarded - or loses its quality. Molina also said that there is an agreement with the Governing

Council in which a cut of two million euros will be made to reduce the aid to those using imported products that produce cheeses. This, he said, “will benefit local livestock and industrial sections that help this section, including dairy farmers in the archipelago”. Meanwhile, Quintero said many farmers this year “had been forced to throw away milk”, because they were overproducing. He added: “The new government measures thrown on the industry and producers do not help those who produce cheese - they simply push prices up.”

PRINCE Harry has spoken of his regret that he did not talk about how the death of his mother, Princess Diana, when he was 12, affected him until three years ago.

The Princess of Wales was killed in a car crash in 1997, when the Prince was just 12. Harry, now 31, was speaking as he hosted an event for mental health charity “Heads Together”, at Kensington Palace, which was attended by a number of sports stars. He told the BBC it was an opportunity to highlight that anyone can suffer from mental health issues. Among those at the event were retired England and Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand, former athletes Dame Kelly Holmes and Iwan Thomas, and ex-cyclist Victoria Pendleton (now a budding jockey), some of whom have spoken publicly about dealing with depression. Prince Harry formed “Heads Together” with his brother William and sister-in-law Kate - the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - to bring together leading mental health charities. The Prince told BBC Breakfast: “It is okay to suffer, but as long as you talk about it - it is not a weakness. Weakness is having a problem and not recognising it - and not solving that problem.” He said the event was an opportunity to show that “unflappable” sporting personalities can suffer from mental health problems, like everyone else, including members of the Royal Family. “A lot of people think if you’ve got a job, if you’ve got financial security, if you’ve got a family, you’ve got a house … all that sort of stuff - everyone seems to think that is all you need, and that you are absolutely fine to deal with stuff,” he said. Prince Harry commented about his mother’s death as he talked to Ferdinand, saying: “You know, I really regret not ever talking about it.” Father-of-three Ferdinand, whose wife, Re-

becca Ellison, died from cancer last year, also spoke with the Prince about dealing with the death of a parent. Ferdinand said: “He’s gone through different stages in his life that my kids are going to be going towards. “So, to get some of his experiences is very rewarding for me - and very educational in many ways.” Prince Harry told the BBC: “It is very easy for someone to look at someone like Rio Ferdinand and say, ‘You get paid all the money in the world, you are a successful footballer, you have fast cars’. “But at the end of the day, his wife was snatched from him at an early stage of his life with her. “So, of course, he is going to suffer. It doesn’t matter if he has an amazing job.” Harry discussed the issue of depression and mental health with other guests, and former European sprint champion Thomas told him how he suffered when

his career was cut short by injury. He said: “I think Yes, depression definitely. I didn’t have one injury that was suddenly like, ‘you have to retire tomorrow’. That almost might have been easier being dealt a really bad blow.” Prince Harry also spoke to Dame Kelly, who told him of the mental issues she fought after suffering injuries before the 2004 Olympics, during which she won a golden double, in the 800m and 1,500m. She said: “I had depression going through my athletics career. No one knew at all what I was going through. I was having treatment, and they thought I was crying because the treatment was so hard. “It’s really been the last three or four years that I’ve been more open.” On the lighter side of proceedings, Prince Harry and some of the guests enjoyed a lighthearted game of French Cricket, which brought a smile to everyone’s face.

Don’t judge me, pleads boozy ex-England star RAY Wilkins, the former England footballer, who pleaded guilty to his third drinkdriving offence, has asked not to be judged for “the alcoholism problem that I have” after escaping a jail sentence.

The 59-year-old was seen driving his Mercedes in the middle of the road and straddling a bus lane on the A4 near Heathrow on 1st July. Prosecutor Izolda Gribbin said a member of the public had seen him “striking a kerb on the road as well as drinking alcohol from the bottle while driving”. Wilkins had tried to do a U-turn and his car stopped, allowing the member of the public to take the keys out of the car. Ms Gribbin said police described Wilkins as “unsteady on his feet, and there was a smell of alcohol coming from him”. Uxbridge magistrates heard that Wilkins, of Cobham, Surrey, was found to have 100mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath - the legal limit is 35mg. The one-time England star, awarded an MBE in 1993 for services to football, was given a 10-week, suspended jail sentence, ordered to do 140

hours of unpaid work and was banned from driving for four years. “I fully understand that I’ll be judged for the crime I’ve committed, and that’s absolutely 100%,” he said afterwards. “I would ask most sincerely that I will not be judged on the alcoholism problem that I have, because I am an addict. Unfortunately, I say that.” Chairman of the bench Nash Gill, who said he appreciated that Wilkins had a “genuine desire to change”, added: “You are now someone who recognises the problem you have, and you are taking steps to deal with alcoholism. “It will not be easy. This court sees many people battling addiction, so you have a tough road ahead.” Wilkins should have faced the magistrates the previous week. But his barrister had already told the court that the former midfielder was undergoing a 28-day rehabilitation course for alcoholism at the Priory Hospital in Woking, Surrey, which finishes on Monday. Wilkins, who won 84 England caps, began his career as a teenager at Chelsea and went on to play for Manchester United. He also has spells with AC Milan and Paris St Germain before becoming manager and coach for Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers, among other clubs.

Tubby Canarians top of obese chart THE Spanish Society of Community Nutrition (SENC) has warned that around 25% of Canarians are obese, according to figures released by Javier Aranceta, chairman of its scientific committee.

The Canary Islands exceeds by four points the national average, and 21% of Spaniards are obese at 21. The report also suggests that 40% of the national population is overweight. Aranceta, Professor of Public and Community Nutrition Health at the University of Navarra said: “Having five points more than body mass index (BMI) represents 40% of diabetics, so we can see that the impact on public health is massive. “This is not just a personal problem. Those who have a BMI equal to, or greater than 30, are more likely to have other risk factors as well. “These can be problems like hypertension,

diabetes, high cholesterol or constant joint sprain. Also, they will be cutting their lifespan considerably.” Aranceta also said that some of the findings’ contents are simple, adding: “Eating healthy at any age is important - the challenge is to get people to use the new dietary guidelines.” Regarding the factors that influence obesity

from an epidemiological point of view, the research specified: “Obesity affects more people from disadvantaged backgrounds, with low education, low social economic status, more sedentary eating patterns with less consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.” As for the “geography of obesity”, the

professor said that Cantabria, “with 17%, is one of the regions with lower levels of obesity, along with the Balearic Islands, Cataluña and the Basque Country”. But he added: “The more-often obese focuses on Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Asturias and Galicia, all 25% above the national average.”

Tax-dodgers pay price THERE has been a clampdown in recent years on illegal buildings, and the avoidance of paying correct tax.

The Ministry of Finance revealed this week that there are still plenty of illegal constructions in the Canaries. In fact, in the year ending 2015 there were 92,813 undeclared buildings, amounting to 8.60% of all properties. In the Las Palmas province, the most frequent irregularities are extensions and building rehabilitation (58% of all cases), new construction (27%), alterations and changes of

use (11%) and swimming pools (3%). It’s a little different here in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where the main irregularity focuses on new construction (47%). This is followed by expansions and rehabilitations (34%), alterations and changes of use (15%) and pools (3%).

Following an investigation into the nonpayment of property tax, an extra 12.28 million euros was collected last year in Santa Cruz. And so far this year, that figure is a healthy six million. Another 54.44 million euros is owed in arrears. In the whole of Spain, the number of illegal

properties is the equivalent of 8.6% of all urban dwellings. The MOF’s plan to fight tax fraud, which came into force in 2013, has led to an extra 1.69 million properties paying up in 4,340 municipalities. According to the Treasury, this will mean an extraordinary collection of 1.3 billion euros in property tax (IBI), representing 24% more than originally calculated by the ministry. And 70% corresponded to undeclared constructions, extensions and pools. As for the type of fraud, the largest percentage of illegal pools were in Barcelona, with Granada topping illegal constructions!

Gay website follower denies four murders STEPHEN Port, a 41-year-old man accused of drugging and murdering four men, has now been charged with attacking eight others.

He was initially charged with four counts of administering a poison, and four of murder, in relation to four men he met on gay websites. But it can now be reported that he has also been charged with six further counts of administering a poison, seven of rape and four sexual assaults, regarding eight other men. On Monday at the Old Bailey, he denied all the offences, which are alleged to have been committed between 2011 and last year. He also denies four charges of manslaughter, which have been filed as alternatives to the murder charges. Port, of Cooke Street, Barking, in east London, appeared via videolink from Belmarsh Prison, and spoke only

to confirm his name and enter the pleas. His trial is set to start on 4th October and could last up to 10 weeks. Prosecutors say he met his victims - all in their twenties - on gay websites, invited them to his home and poisoned them with GHB - a popular club drug. Four of them - Anthony Walgate, 23, Gabriel Kovari, 22, Daniel Whitworth, 21, and 25-yearold Jack Taylor - suffered overdoses. and their bodies were found in or near an east London churchyard. The bodies of Mr Walgate, a fashion and design student at university; Mr Kovari, originally from Slovakia but living in Lewisham; and Mr Whitworth, from Gravesend in Kent, were all found in 2014. The body of Dagenham forklift driver Mr Taylor was found last September. Initially, police did not link the four deaths. But after further investigation, they were handed to the Met’s homicide and major crime squad last October.

Yahoo making way for buyers Verizon

AMERICAN telecoms giant Verizon has bought internet search-engine company Yahoo for £3.8bn and will combine it with AOL, another fading internet company it purchased last year. But the deal does not include Yahoo’s valuable stake in Chinese firm Alibaba, and the price is way below the $44bn Microsoft offered for Yahoo in 2008, or the $125bn it was valued at during the dot.com boom. Verizon says the deal for Yahoo’s core internet business, which has more than one billion active users a month, will make it a global mobile media company. Yahoo has sold off all of its core assets, including its email service, news, finance and sports websites, together with its advertising tools. For the past eight years, Yahoo has struggled to reach its financial targets, losing out to the likes of Google and Facebook. And last year’s £3.4bn loss seemed to be the final straw for the search engine. When Verizon bought AOL in June 2015, it merged all its Verizon email customer accounts into AOL Mail accounts. It meant that Verizon email account hold-

ers had to re-register to AOL Mail and set a new password. But their actual email addresses stayed exactly the same - the only thing that changed was their log-in page. The same may, potentially, happen to Yahoo email accounts. This could mean you re-registering with AOL mail, but you will probably still be able to keep your @yahoo.com email address. There may even be some upgrades to your account. Verizon spruced up AOL’s email service, giving customers unlimited storage and email attachments up to 25MB. It also created advanced spam filters and virus protection. For now, though, if you are a Yahoo email account-holder, sit tight. You’ll be notified if you are required to do anything and will be given simple instructions on how to re-register. Verizon, no doubt, will also provide free technical support if any issues do arise. Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer said: “Yahoo is a company that has changed the world, and will continue to do so through this combination with Verizon and AOL.”

Ms Mayer said in an email to staff that she was “planning to stay”, adding: “I love Yahoo, and I believe in all of you. It’s important to me to see Yahoo into its next chapter.” But the takeover, set to be completed early next year, raises questions about whether the Yahoo brand could disappear altogether. Michael Goodman, a director at Strategy Analytics, said: “That’s the big, open-ended question - what are they going to do with the brands?” But beyond the talk of becoming a global media company, Verizon Chief Executive Lowell McAdams wants a larger share of the booming, digital, advertising pie. And he believes this deal will help him. Verizon, as a leading US mobile phone network, already had a wealth of data from smartphone users which it could mine. Its purchase of AOL a year ago for its programmatic, advertising technology, allowed it to leverage that more effectively. Yahoo, meanwhile, has struggled to build its mobile advertising business. Its appeal is that it has content.

With Yahoo, Verizon gains the internet company’s 600 million active mobile-users monthly, as well as its email service, Yahoo Finance, and Tumblr, which is popular among millennials. So is Verizon ready to take on the likes of Google and Facebook? In 2015, these two tech behemoths claimed the largest share of the digital ad market. Whether Verizon can challenge that remains to be seen, but that’s certainly the idea. Tim Armstrong, AOL Chief Executive, said the deal was about “unleashing Yahoo’s full potential”, and creating a major player in mobile media. Together, AOL and Yahoo will have more than 25 brands, including Yahoo Mail, Flickr and Tumblr, as well as AOL’s Huffington Post and Techcrunch news sites. Ms Mayer, who took the helm at Yahoo in 2012, has made little progress in returning the company to profit. Last week, the company reported a $440m loss in the second quarter, but it said the board had made “great progress on strategic alternatives”.

Baby tragedy over wrong hospital gas A NEWBORN baby has died in an Australian hospital in Sydney after being given nitrous oxide instead of oxygen. And a second baby is in a critical condition, having received the “laughing gas” initially, at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. Both little tots were treated with a dis-

penser of nitrous oxide, which had been wrongly installed as oxygen in the hospital’s neo-natal resuscitation unit last year. New South Wales Health Minister Jillian Skinner apologised after the problem was discovered when the second baby died, and a paediatrician raised concerns.

She said: “I am profoundly sorry for the families of a newborn who died and another newborn who is severely affected. “I deeply regret these families have suffered through such a devastating error, and NSW Health will do all it can to support them. “The oxygen outlet in one of the hospital’s

theatres was incorrectly installed and certified by BOC Ltd in July 2015.” The grieving families, whose children were born in June and July this year, were informed about the devastating mistake at the weekend. Eight operating theatres at the hospital have since been

checked, and the one affected remains closed. Nitrous oxide and oxygen are both odourless and colourless, but BOC’s company website suggests its oxygen gas tanks are black, while those filled with nitrous oxide are light blue. South Western Sydney Local Health Dis-

trict has launched a probe to investigate if hospital staff followed rules that may have uncovered the installation error last year. Other health facilities in the region have been asked to check their gas outlets and review protocols for ensuring they are properly installed.

THE currency market may not sound exciting to the general public, but it has certainly been active over the last week, with the Pound still experiencing volatility against the major currencies.

At the beginning of last week, sterling regained a little ground with the speedy announcement of new British Prime Minister Theresa May travelling to France and Germany. She was discussing exit plans with the main EU players, although no agreements can be reached until

The US, Canada, Australia and India are among the nations making initial approaches to the UK with regard to trade deals after the Referendum result, which should encourage investors to have faith in the Pound. Midweek, and sterling faltered again. Despite better-than- expected inflation data from the UK, the Pound fell against the Dollar and Euro. Businesses are still cautious about spending and investment, and they will continue to be so in the coming months because of the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. It seems the Prime Minister will not trigger Article 50 until 2017 to allow plenty of time for the UK to navigate its departure from the EU. And, of course, it will be a further two years from that date

for the release from EU regulations. Thursday, and UK unemployment fell to an 11-year-low from 5.6% to 4.9% - 54,000 lower than the previous period, which boosted sterling. Again on Friday, it lost ground with less-positive PMI (Purchasers Managing Index) readings from the UK showing a contracting ser-

vices sector, although this was slightly offset by positive manufacturing data. While we have seen the rate move down from 1.30 prior to Brexit to between 1.17-1.20 in the last week or so, there is a small “silver lining” to consider. The EUR to GBP rate is beneficial for Canary Island companies importing prod-

ders of any description, whether it be for trade or free movement of people.” The First Minister said she did not want to see a return to the borders of the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties, but stressed that they had been for security reasons and nothing to do with membership of the EU. Mrs May said they had discussed the impact the referendum would have, and stressed her “Brexit means Brexit” mantra. She also insisted that Northern Ireland and Scotland would be “involved in our discussions as we set forward the UK position”. The EU referendum saw 56% of the Northern Ireland people vote to remain and 62% in Scotland. The open -borders agreement, set up in the 1920s, has been strengthened by both Britain and Ireland’s

European membership. However, questions and concerns have been raised about what this means for the Common Travel Areas (CTA) and for both economies in the wake of the referendum. David Ford, Northern Ireland’s former justice minister, is among a cross-community group of politicians and human-rights activists whose lawyers have written to Mrs May. They have urged her to consider the peace process and other unique requirements before triggering Article 50, the mechanism to leave the EU. Solicitors have threatened to take a judicial review before the High Court in Belfast - and, ultimately, to Europe’s highest court - unless Mrs May addresses legal obligations they say she must meet, including gaining the consent of the Stormont Assembly.

PM May facing border-line case THERESA May, on her first visit to Belfast since becoming Britain’s Prime Minister, does not want the European Union Brexit to herald a “return to the borders of the past” in Northern Ireland.

But she insisted there would have to be some kind of border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland when the UK left the EU. But she definitely doesn’t envisage the return of a hard border - and she has vowed to work with Stormont to “deliver a practical solution” to the problem. After meeting First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness

for what she described as “constructive talks”, she said: “Nobody wants to return to the borders of the past. “What we do want to do is find a way through this that is going to work: deliver a practical solution for everybody as part of the work we are doing to make sure we make a success of the UK leaving the European Union.” But Mr McGuinness said there was “no good news whatsoever about Brexit” and that Northern Ireland’s vote to remain part of the EU should be respected. He added: “I am totally against any bor-

ucts from the UK. Hopefully, this will be reflected in the prices of some of our favourite products! People buying items online in sterling from UK websites, or have bills to pay in Britain, will also see that the rate is in their favour. Unfortunately, in the currency business, it’s impossible to please

everybody at the same time. There’s many a week you hope for something to spike the Pound-to-Euro rate for a period to help all your clients who need euros; then, a short time later, wish for sterling to weaken against the euro to help those sending money in the other direction. Either way, it’s important to make sure you get the best deal for your currency transfer… Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, keep on top of the currency market. Our friendly experts at Currencies Direct are just a phone call away whenever you need them. Pension cheats have claimed 300m euros A TOTAL of 300 million euros in pensions to the deceased was paid out fraudulently last year.

The National Audit Office says “holes and deficiencies” caused this enormous leak, in which 30,000 people, registered deceased, “received” monthly payments amounting to 25.3m euros throughout 2015. So who did

benefit? Statistics from the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) show that Spain spent more than 10.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on pensions, which was way above the 7.9% average. And with the country still in the midst of austerity measures, and facing EU fines over its uncontrolled deficit, this makes for unhappy reading.

Mo Farah: Race Of His Life

Don't Miss...

Thursday 4 August, BBC1, 21.00 With unprecedented access to Mo Farah, Mo Farah: Race of his Life is a one-hour documentary charting the athlete’s brutal training schedule, and goes behind the scenes of family life in the build-up to the 2016 Rio Olympics. Produced over a year, the film sees Mo as never before. We witness his brutal training camps in Africa and the USA, follow him as he competes in races around the world, and intimately see how the double Olympic and five-time world champion balances his work and family life, bringing up his four young children with wife Tania. As well as showing the determination, dedication and sacrifice that goes into Farah’s athletic programme, this candid documentary also shows the events that have shaped Farah into the man he is today. He reunites with his twin brother, who he was separated from for 12 years, revisits his childhood home of Djibouti, the country he left as an eight year-old, and tells the story of his moves, first to a new life in the UK as a young boy, and a subsequent move with his young family to the USA which transformed him as an athlete. The film charts Mo’s career from promising youngster to London 2012, and witnesses the continuing sacrifices necessary to defend his titles in Rio. But this has been no ordinary year for Mo, and the sport in general, and Mo candidly discusses the recent controversies with his coach Alberto Salazar.

Britain’s Favourite Superhero Saturday 30 July, Channel 4, 19.30 This programme celebrates the greatest movie superheroes of all time, voted for by the British public. Superheroes are everywhere. What was the domain of the comic-loving geek is now box office gold and Brits have lapped them up. And, with over 20 new superhero movies currently scheduled for release, it’s a trend that won’t be reversing any time soon. So who are these heroes and why do we love them so much? For this entertaining, clip-and-interview packed special, a new poll has been commissioned to find out exactly who the British public love the best. The story is told of how these superheroes made the leap from the pages of comic books to cinema screens and how, through blockbuster hits such as The Dark Knight and Iron Man, superhero super-studios Marvel and DC have honed and refined their art.

Tom Daley: Diving for Gold ITV1, 20.00

It covers the athlete’s sporting, public and personal life, including: Tom’s coming out as he reveals to the world his relationship with Dustin Lance Black, his leaving Plymouth and life-long coach Andy Banks behind in favour of London and new coach Jane Figueiredo, and the gamble he’s taking learning a new dive in pursuit of Olympic gold in Rio.

1966 - A Nation Remembers ITV1, 21.00

This new documentary for ITV marks the 50th anniversary of English football’s greatest triumph, the 1966 World Cup victory, seen through the eyes of the people who were at Wembley and celebrating around the country. Half a century ago, England hosted the World Cup for the first and only time - and the whole nation was involved. This programme provides a colourful insight into a magical sporting summer, described in vivid detail by those at the final itself, and those caught up in World Cup fever further afield, as well as using some previously unseen archive footage. They include a pair of Irish students on a summer break who operated the Wembley scoreboard, a young copper told to swap the Jules Rimet trophy for a replica in the victorious team’s changing room, an England player ordered not to exchange shirts with an Argentinian opponent and fans who celebrated the win by dancing in Trafalgar Square’s fountains. Narrated by actor Terence Stamp, who attended all of England’s games in the tournament, the programme also features testimony from a 14 year old girl who attended a street party in the shadow of Everton’s Goodison Park stadium, a Derbyshire mum who watched West Germany train, and a schoolboy who clambered onto a car taking the Charlton brothers to their homecoming celebrations in Ashington, Northumberland. The programme starts with the build-up to the first game, England against Uruguay at Wembley - a disappointing 0-0 draw. It wasn’t a let-down for everyone - Eddie Murray was a 15-year-old boy who carried out the England flag at the opening ceremony. He says: “The PE teacher took me aside and said, ‘Have you ever carried a flag?’ I said no. He said, ‘Well, in this instance you’re going to be carrying a flag for England.’ Well puffed up, pride, delighted.”

Former Royal Marine turned private pilot Arthur Williams discovers how people make a life in the world’s most beautiful but remote places, as he tries to fly into the smallest, scariest airstrips on Earth. In this first episode of the second series, Arthur discovers how dangerous flying to the ends of the Earth can be when he faces a helicopter crash in one of the coldest regions on Earth: Siberia. First, Arthur flies over a giant hole, five times deeper than the white cliffs of Dover: a giant open-cast diamond mine in the town of Mirny. Arthur meets the miners who have toiled for years below ground.

Cash Trapped ITV1, 17.00

The 10-part series, that is based on an original idea by Bradley Walsh himself, sees six contestants battle it out across a series of fast paced question rounds where the players must actively try to sabotage their opponents by beating them to the buzzer and trapping them out of the game. In the final round of each episode, the contestant who has earned the most cash will go head to head against the rest of the group to try and take their winnings home. If a contestant succeeds, they escape with all the cash they’ve built up, while their five opponents leave empty handed. However if they fail to escape their bank is drained and everyone else rolls their winnings over. Then they all remain ‘Cash Trapped’ until the next episode. So contestants could be on the show for just one day or return for days or even weeks, building relationships, rivalries and limitless sums of money as players try and fail to escape. It’s fast, tactical and cut-throat with an incredibly tense, high pressure finish every single day. Will anyone escape? Or will they all stay ‘Cash Trapped’? Host Bradley Walsh said: “I’m looking forward to seeing how the ITV audience enjoy Cash Trapped. It was an idea I came up with in my dressing room about 10 years ago whilst in between scenes on a drama. I took the idea to Helen Warner last year and she hooked me up with my old pal Glenn Hugill who helped me knock it into shape. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!”

Inside The Factory: Crisps

29th July - 4th August 2016

T u esday

BBC2, 20.00

The British love eating crisps. So much so that we get through a staggering half a billion crisps a day - and that takes 17 million potatoes. So why do we love the humble fried potato snack so much, and what are the secrets behind making the perfect crisp? In the second episode of Inside The Factory, Gregg Wallace and Cherry Healey go in search of these answers and discover plenty of surprising facts along the way. We’ll see Gregg at the largest crisp factory on earth - Walkers factory in Leicester - as he follows 27 tonnes of potatoes as they are peeled, sliced and fried to make more than five million packets of crisps every 24 hours. He’ll discover how each bag is filled with nitrogen to keep the crisps from going stale - and if you ever wondered how a crisp gets it flavour then we’ll get to see the inside of the factory’s development kitchen, where seasoning begins its crisp life as a real food dish. Meanwhile Cherry Healey discovers the secrets of perfect crisp potatoes, and how it is all down to a potato’s sugar content. She also finds out that our noses play a central role in how things taste and ambiance can be as big factor as ingredients. Plus she follows the production of Monster Munch, where the factory transforms 96 tonnes of corn into 12 million monster feet every single day. And historian Ruth Goodman investigates who really invented the crisp: was it the Americans, as is often cited, or the British? Ruth cooks up the earliest known recipe for crisps to uncover the truth.

It’s the Child Genius final. Quizmaster Richard Osman tests the five gifted finalists as they chase the coveted trophy. Round One is a specialist round, with topics ranging from spiders that mimic insects to Russian ballet, Florence Nightingale’s influence on military and healthcare reform, to Margaret Thatcher’s premiership and tax policy. The last two standing then advance to the final round, with questions on maths, spelling and general knowledge. This series takes viewers into the heart of one of Britain’s last ‘secret spaces’: the interview room. It’s simple and authentic: real candidates competing for real jobs, filmed in microscopic detail, capturing every nuance. From a teenager looking for their first job to a single mum returning to work and an OAP seeking independence and self-worth, the process is the same. Nerves are tested and emotions run high, as the candidates know the only thing standing between them and the job is themselves. Jacqui O’Donovan, managing director of Londonbased waste disposal company O’Donovan, and her right hand man, Richard Clark, are interviewing for an executive assistant. Jacqui admits that ‘a wilting violet will not survive’.

Saving Lives At Sea BBC1, 21.00

In the summer months millions of Britains flock to the UK’s 11,000 miles of coastline. But, as more and more of us have lost our connection with and understanding of the seas that surround us, it’s all too easy to be caught out by the water - making it the busiest time of year by far for the RNLI. The army of unpaid volunteers has to contend with everything from overly ambitious novice sailors caught in a storm to a little girl who has become trapped in the rocks below the high-water mark. The dangers of the water are further put into perspective when a father gets himself into serious difficulties after swimming out to try and rescue his young son, whilst a YouTube prankster deliberately flings himself from Tower Bridge for ‘a dare’.

The £100k House: The Final Fix BBC2, 20:00

Wajid and Anam/ Heidi and Steven. Ambitious builds, the tightest of budgets and a desperate need for fresh ideas united the projects that Kieran Long and Piers Taylor followed on The House That £100K Built. Now, Piers is back to tackle a final set of challenges - it is now or never as the owners battle to complete their homes for good. Wajid and Anam from Burnley have now completed more of their ambitious house in their own luxurious style, but they are struggling to make the largest room, at the heart of their home, feel welcoming. Piers searches for an ingenious design solution to solve it. He delivers a radical idea inspired by a fashionable hotel. In north east Scotland, the dream Heidi and Steven had for a home of their own has become a reality. The seemingly impossible challenge here is to turn a pile of builders’ rubble into a stunning garden that is safe to play in for just £1,000!

Gift Of Hearing BBC2, 23.05

The Gift of Hearing tells the story of Gateshead’s Jo Milne (pictured), who has Ushers Syndrome. Jo was born deaf and has recently started losing her sight too. Two years ago she became an internet sensation when she was filmed hearing for the first time after having implants fitted. Now Jo is fulfilling a dream that she and her best friend Amina Khan had as children: to provide hearing aids to hundreds of children in Bangladesh. Made by BBC’s North East current affairs team and narrated by Jo’s friend broadcaster Lauren Laverne, The Gift Of Hearing follows Jo on her trip to Bangladesh where five percent of the children are profoundly deaf. In Dahka, Jo works with the charities The Hearing Fund UK and the Starkey Foundation to provide hearing aids. For Jo, seeing first-hand hundreds of children being given the chance to hear for the first time is an incredibly emotional but rewarding experience.

The 80s With Dominic Sandbrook BBC2, 21.00 Episode One, The Sound Of The Crowd, looks at how the early 80s saw the powerful new forces of choice and consumerism radically reshape British life, tearing down existing ways of doing things and ripping up the rule book of British politics. This new culture of consumer-driven populism propelled Margaret Thatcher to victory. For the first time, ‘who we were’ became a question less about the fixed identities of region and class, and much more about the choices we made: from where we shopped, to how we cooked, to what we wore. Margaret Thatcher may have embodied this change - but she didn’t drive it. This episode takes in everything from the popularity of Delia Smith to affordable fashions on the high street; from the subcultures of Britain’s youth to the crisis of identity that rocked and splintered the political Left. But it also shows how the mood of aspiration that swept the nation left certain sections of society adrift and alienated, from the hollowed-out industrial heartlands of the Midlands to the inner-city communities of South London and Liverpool.

Ruth follows in the footsteps of Britain’s herring girls, revealing how the North Yorkshire Moors Railway revived the fortunes of Whitby, turning it into a thriving fishing town. Alex looks at how pioneering farmers attempted to use steam power to increase production. Peter discovers how steam-powered engines revolutionised production at Britain’s oldest brewery. In Yorkshire, Ruth sees how farmers created a monopoly on rhubarb.

The Investigator: A British Crime Story ITV1, 21.00

“People have said to me, ‘Okay, forget it. Just leave it. It’s 30 years now.’ And you just think to yourself, ‘If it was your mother, would you leave it?’” - Sam Gillingham, Carole Packman’s daughter Mark Williams-Thomas returns to ITV for an explosive and ground-breaking new investigative series that shows how real life crime can be far more compelling than fiction. Williams-Thomas, the award-winning former police detective who unmasked Jimmy Savile as the UK’s most notorious paedophile, re-examines a previously ‘closed’ and chilling murder case, which has baffled detectives for more than 30 years. The murder of Carole Packman, whose body has never been found, continues to affect the lives of many of those involved and as Williams-Thomas discovers, the shocking tale of murder, fraud, deceit and lies has left family members desperate for answers. In a UK television first, The Investigator: A British Crime Story, will follow the case over four explosive episodes, combining stylized drama with compelling documentary. In June 1985 the wife and mother mysteriously disappeared and has never been seen since. Her husband Russell Causley is now serving a life sentence for her murder, yet no body has ever been found. Throughout the case he pleaded his innocence and refused to talk. After Carole’s disappearance, a woman turned up at a police station claiming to be her, saying she was safe and well. Russell had begun an affair with an employee in his new insurance business - Patricia Causley, who at 26 was much younger than him. She moved in with the couple in Westbourne having sold her own flat and given them the proceeds, and says the marriage was already breaking down.

Ellen cheers Oscars ELLEN DeGeneres, the actress and presenter whose voice is employed by the lead character in Pixar animation Finding Dory, has praised the Oscars for diversifying its membership. Nearly 700 people have been asked to join the Academy after a race row, and Ellen said: “It’s always amazing to me that it has taken this long for all of us to realise we should all be represented in film and television. Obviously, it’s long overdue.” “There’s a planet full of people who aren’t white heterosexual. There’s a lot of people of colour, fat people, people who aren’t absolutely perfect.” Ellen, who married her partner, Portia Di Rossi, in 2008 in California after same-sex marriage became legal there, has previously hosted the Oscars twice. She added: “Hollywood’s always celebrated beauty and perfection and that’s great. “Who doesn’t want to look at beauty and per-

fection? But we also need to represent everybody on the planet.” A selfie she took while presenting the 2014 ceremony became the most retweeted photo of all time. And DeGeneres, gearing up for the UK release of Finding Dory, joked about the selfie,

sayi n g : “Nothing will beat it, ever. Maybe I’ll aspire to beat it myself.”

Finding Dory, the sequel to Finding Nemo, has been a huge success in the US, where it has become the highest-grossing animated film of all. But its success is unlikely to translate into significant Oscars’ glory because the Best Picture Award has never been won by an animated film - something DeGeneres says is a shame. “You obviously relate more when you see a

person and a face, and maybe that’s what the Academy Awards have been about,” said the 58-year-old. “But the performances in animated movies are challenging for us voice actors because we’re getting emotions across, strictly through our voices. “We need to get comedic timing, sadness, emotion, all through our voice without the benefit of body language or facial expressions. So it’s as much of a challenge, if not a tiny bit more.” If there was one phrase that stuck in the mind from 2003’s Finding Nemo, it was Dory’s motto, “just keep swimming”. In other words, stay strong in the face of uncertainty. With the sequel finally about to arrive in UK cinemas 13 years later - what message will a whole new generation of children take from the second instalment of the franchise? “Just keep swimming is always a good motto, no matter what,” she said.

“But this time around, the most important one for me is that your disability, your supposed disability, is your strength,” said The “disability” she refers to is Dory’s shortterm memory loss, which causes her to forget names and faces instantly. In Finding Dory, however, the blue tang fish begins to get flashbacks of her parents, whom she lost when she was young, which leads to her quest to find them. “You should look at whatever makes you different as what makes you special,” said Ellen, of Dory’s memory loss. “We need to embrace who we are. So I think that’s a good message. People ask ‘what would Dory do?’ and it’s because of her disability that people ask that, because she doesn’t worry about the past, think about the future or analyse everything. “She’s just in the present moment, which is something to which we should aspire.”

New Bond star? Idris gives himself the Elba NEW reports suggest that the next James Bond film will not be in cinemas until 2018 because producer Barbara Broccoli is concentrating on other projects.

So says The Sun newspaper, which also claims she wants 007 to be played by Daniel Craig again. “Barbara is not going to be rushed into a Bond and wants to work on two other film projects next year,” a source told the newspaper. “It will give her time to work out a script and try to convince Daniel to maybe return.” Idris Elba, star of Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, says he is “too old” for the role, and anyway, there has been no official confirmation that Craig has quit. Last year, though, he

said he’d “rather slash my wrists” than reprise the role for the 25th film in the Bond series. Meanwhile, Elba appears to have ruled himself out as a replacement, saying he is

too old - despite being five years younger than Craig. Bookmakers have been tipping the 43-year-old Luther star to play the secret agent, but he told Good Morning America:

“I think I’m too old for that. “Running around in cars … and ladies … and Martinis? who wants to do that? Sounds terrible!” Elba will be 45 in 2018, which, coincidentally, is the same age that Roger Moore was when he became the oldest “new” Bond in 1973’s Live And Let Die. Elba isn’t even the oldest actor being tipped to take over from Craig. Colin Salmon, 53, has edged ahead of him into fifth place, says bookmaker William Hill, which has American Hustle actor Jack Huston as the front-runner. Poldark star Aidan Turner and James Norton, who appeared in War And Peace and Happy Valley, are joint second. Tom Hiddleston, recently pictured with American singer Taylor Swift, is fourth.

Last week’s Arona Summer Festival lived up to all expectations.

Headliner deadmau5 tweeted to his 3.6 million followers “Thanks Tenerife! Was good to see you :)” Don Diablo was similarly impressed “Thank You!” 15,000 people flocked to the event in Los Palos on Friday and Saturday night making it the most important dance festival in the South.

A 24-hour Tenerife treat By Vanessa Vee WE are so lucky to live here in Tenerife and sometimes, we take for granted what our Island has to offer. For a start, people choose to come here for their holidays, and it is largely dependent on tourism.

But how many of us actually take holidays here? Okay, we may have taken a few days in a hotel, maybe in Puerto de la Cruz or Los Gigantes, or even Las Americas, which is an excellent way to get away from it all without having to fly off somewhere. I wonder, though, how many of us have actually explored Tenerife? This week, my family did just that, and we decided to

stay in a rural hotel. Now, rural does not mean a cabin in the middle of the National Park or camping, which, by the way, I have experienced in the National Park and would highly recommend it. No, rural is more off the beaten track. We wanted somewhere not too far away and also suitable for our two young children, so we booked into the Casa Zaguan hotel in Vilaflor, which is under an hour’s drive from the South. On arrival, we were greeted by the owner and given a guided tour of the hotel and its facilities. The building itself was inviting and felt like home. The hotel consisted of nine rooms,

all individually decorated, which added to its charm. The kids were happy with the swimming pool, while us adults enjoyed the hot tub, sauna, free pool (the game) and table tennis. The hotel is situated opposite the church square, where there are cafes and restaurants close by to sample Canarian cuisine, and have a coffee or beer. After a night’s stay, we were up early, enjoying a fantastic view over the South of the Island above the clouds, while having breakfast. Once we’d checked out, we decided to head over to Garachico to try out the natural pools. The journey is over an hour and so, to break it

up, we headed towards Teide. I have travelled through the National Park many times, but it still amazes me with its dynamic landscape and scenic views. From Teide, we dropped down to join the new motorway along to Santiago del Teide. Now that was a highlight in itself, not only were we the only ones on it, but it really did shorten the journey. From Santiago, we headed over to Garachico, and I have a fondness for the village because it is such a beautiful place to visit. It has a church square, where you can have a coffee, plus three museums - all very cheap to enter - which explain

all about the leper colony and the importing/ exporting of goods between Tenerife and the rest of the world. Once we’d had a dip in the natural pools, we decided to head for lunch, again to break up the journey, so we headed to Meson el Monasterio, just on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz. For those of you who have not been there, it is literally an old monastery, converted into a variety of restaurants. The food itself comprises mainly Canarian cuisine, and the surroundings are spectacular ... and during the meal, you might see chickens and even peacocks passing by your table. Once we’d finished

eating, and the children had looked at the animals, we headed on to Santa Cruz. The capital’s port is where you will see all the cruise liners coming in and out, which remains a fascination. And we are lucky during the winter months that Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and Thomson have Tenerife as an embarkation point for their trips. We decided this time not to take in the sights but to savour the shops and a coffee before heading home. And we managed all of this in 24 hours! Yes it was a lot to pack in, but we returned home having felt we had got away and seen a little, but more, of what Tenerife has to offer. So what you waiting for ... go explore this fabulous Island! To book accommodation, transfers, cruises, holiday or excursions, contact the Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team on 922 751 867 (ext 1), email info@tenerife sunshine.com or visit their main office in Cristian Sur, Los Cristianos.

Treasure Restaurant Kikiriki, Apolo Centre

this pleasure THIS little Canarian treasure, which has been established for nearly a decade in the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos, and Cabo Blanco previously, has always been favourite with locals and tourists alike.

And although Kikiriki, a family-run restaurant, is renowned for its tasty chicken dishes, we fancied sampling some of the other delights on the expansive menu. For starters, we ordered the smoked salmon and onion tart, along with creamy spinach gratin. The tart came with a grilled topping and was served with a crisp side-salad. The spinach was smooth and cheesy with a hint of pepper an ideal combination for sharing. For the main course, we opted for the Grilled Loin of Cod, topped with garlic, as recommended by owner Antonio, and then it was a toss up between the Roast Suckling Pig or tender Leg of Lamb? Pig got the headsup, and what a good choice. It came crispy

a few. All this was washed down with half a litre of their easy-todrink house red, served in traditional terracotta jugs. Want to know when you can sample these delights? Kikiriki is open Tuesday-Saturday, 5-10pm, and

on the outside, with a melt-in-the-mouth inside after being slowroasted in the oven. It was served with a traditional, homemade, apple sauce on the side, along with sautéd potatoes and seasonal veg - plenty to satisfy even the heartiest of appetites. The fish was also mouth-watering: a nice plump fillet that flaked easily at the touch of a fork. Be aware, though, that if you’re not a garlic lover (or are on a hot date), ask for the other fish options, simply grilled or with a light sauce. But let’s not forget that Kikiriki still has

Sundays from 1pm onwards. Finally, as a huge thank-you to their loyal customers over the years, the restaurant offers a 40% discount (yes, 40%!) on orders over 10 euros on Sundays between 1-5pm.

ALWAYS SCISSORHAPPY!

THERE are masques, there are treatments and there are rejuvenating creams. But if your hair is past its sell-by date, there’s only one solution.

Cutting hair is never about what you take off - it’s about what you leave on. If your hair’s not saying something positive about you, then, maybe, it’s time you did something about it. I’m not a hairdresser who loves to cut hair for the sake of it. There has to be a good reason to remove it. If what’s in front of the salon mirror isn’t doing you justice, then scissors are the only answer.

So, why do you fear losing hair that’s just hanging there, or is so broken that it would need a life-support system to revive it? Having hair transformed by a good stylist always makes a huge difference, when it comes to how people feel about themselves and everything else.

I’ve seen clients come in feeling - and looking - down, and leaving the salon with a new image, looking and feeling so much better. So, the next time you’re in your trustedstylist’s seat, don’t think about what’s coming off, but look at what’s being left behind.

NOT SHORT ON STYLE By Carl Pattison IN summer, in the heat of the moment, do you normally throw on a skirt? Ever thought that smart shorts can look just as elegant and classy? Finding the right style to complement your shape can be difficult, but, once you do, it can be so flattering. On a woman, shorts should be just that. Avoid longer styles because they can look too masculine and will shorten your frame. And don’t opt for the

skimming-your-cheeks variety. No matter how good your figure, this looks too in-yourface, and a little cheap. Shorts should be well above your knee, while keeping your modesty in place. Fabrics that work well are cottons, silks and light denims - try to avoid anything too heavy-looking. You need to look feminine, and not as though you’re about to go on some kind of trekking adventure. Shorts can be teamed

up with looser-fitting blouses to create a pure, stylish silhouette, or tighter-fitting tops for a more-sporty look. From casual to glamorous, it’s time to get those legs out. If you can’t do it at this time of year, when can you? As an evening look they can be fabulous, teamed up with the right accessories. Just make sure the style you go for is calling your attention for all the right - not wrong - reasons.

A natural bust is a safer bust By Val Sainsbury MANY women, for a variety of reasons, choose to have breast implants. But recent research by plastic surgeons in Australia reveals that they might increase a woman’s risk of developing a rare type of cancer if contaminated with bacteria.

Doctors already know that infection during surgery can cause the most common complication associated with breast enhancement, known as capsular contracture. This is the hardening of scar tissue around the implant, causing physical deformity and pain. But this is the first time scientists have linked infected implants to the cancer, known as Anaplastic Large-Cell Lymphoma (ALCL). Anand Deva, Associate Professor at Sydney’s Macquarie University’s Health Sciences Centre, who led the research, said: “Once you have a contaminated prosthetic in the body, the body can’t get rid of it. “This chronic irritation goes on and on, and, over a period of time, it stimulates the immune system where some of these cells can potentially transform into cancer.” The surgeons studied

tissue samples from 22 women, who developed the rare form of lymphoma after having breast- enhancement procedures. They found that the women had developed the cancer within eight years of surgery. Researchers also found that implants with a textured surface, popular in Britain and Australia, were 70 times more likely to harbour bacteria than smoothsurfaced implants. It is estimated that between five and 10 million women around the world have breast implants, but the study authors said only a small percentage had gone on to develop cancer. Most women with ALCL have made a full recovery after surgery, but, in some cases, they also needed chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Dr Deva recommended a 14-point plan for cosmetic and plastic surgeons performing breast augmentations, to minimise the risk of infection. These include antibiotic regimes, thorough wound irrigation and minimal handling of implants. Yolinda Cramm had silicone implants 30 years ago, but, in 2004, she had them replaced

when she developed capsular contracture, and the implants started to leak. Within a year, her second set of breast implants also began to harden. “I went to three surgeons before I found Dr Anand Deva, but I just knew something was wrong,” she said. “My whole passion is to be healthy, and I always felt like I wasn’t quite as healthy as I should have been.” Dr Deva removed Mrs Cramm’s implants, and found significant levels of bacteria attached to them. “The implants were black,” said Mrs Cramm. “You could actually see a growth all over them. It was like looking at a drain that was filled with black gunk - and that was sitting in my body.” Dr Deva had to remove some of Mrs Cramm’s breast tissue to ensure the bacteria did not remain in her body. “I was never warned about this risk,” she said. “I would tell women that it really is worth going to see a good surgeon to find out exactly what’s going on, because their health is, potentially, in jeopardy.” The research was published in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery journal.

Summer-proof your home

By Miruna Voicu THE heat has arrived early - and with a vengeance this year! But there are some things you can do to prepare your home to cope well with excess temperatures.

Many Tenerife homes are open-plan, in that the kitchen and living rooms may be combined, with a hallway through to the bedrooms. This is partly to fit as much living area into the space as possible, but also to promote good airflow. This is a design used in many tropical buildings. If possible, open doors and windows when you are home to allow fresh By Val Sainsbury

THE effects of watching violent video games can become contentious, especially when debated in the wake of a rampage shooting, such as the recent Munich carnage.

If it is then discovered that the perpetrator enjoyed violent video games, as did the Munich killer, it is tempting to feel that violent games actually “caused” the rampage shooting. These are rare and complex events, incited

air to pass through the property. Although the outside temperature may still be high, the movement is refreshing, and at least the house won´t be stuffy. If you have security grilles or fly-screens, you might be able to leave these open overnight as well. Stop heat from building up during the day with adequate sunblock protection. This could be in the form of coloured sunblock curtains, sunblock linings for existing curtains or roller or vertical blinds. These also have the advantage of keeping the rooms dark and allowing you have a liein, or even a siesta, as well as enabling you to get smaller children to bed at a reasonable time. Fit ceiling fans or have free-standing ones. Again, they won´t make the air any cooler, but the sensation of movement is cooling on the skin. Remove rugs and car-

pets, and, if the room looks bare, replace with raffia rugs that won´t trap the heat. Choose lightweight, breathable bedding rather than synthetics, and wash them more often than usual.

Make the best possible use of any outside areas available to you, whether it be the smallest terrace or balcony, or the grandest garden or pool area. If your space is limited, use chairs that

are upright, but also recline for reading and relaxing. Provide small side-tables for your book and that all important chilled drink, and use fairy lights to create a cosy, delightful ambience.

In this way, you can enjoy our amazing climate to its fullest. For any of the ítems mentioned above, or for assistance in making the most of your property, contact Deco Nuevo.

Can violent video games affect fans?

by multiple factors acting together, and there’s no way of predicting, accurately, a killing spree based on exposure to these violent video games - or any other single factor for that matter. However, this doesn’t mean there isn’t a link between the violent video games and aggression. Laboratory experiments are carried to make firm and causal

conclusions about their effects. Researchers assign participants at random to play a violent or non-violent game, while holding all other variables constant - such as instructions given to participants. Although lab tests cannot determine whether these violent games cause violent criminal behaviour, researchers have conducted hundreds of experiments on less serious forms of

aggression. This behaviour, intended to harm someone, has been measured in labs via electric shocks. Researchers will look at the number, intensity and duration of shocks the person studied gives to a research accomplice, pretending to be another participant in the video game. Other studies have measured aggression by having participants punish accomplices in the games by blasting them with loud noise through headphones, forcing them to eat hot sauce, or putting their arm in icy water. In experiments involving children conducted outside the lab, aggression has been measured by observing behaviours in inter-actions with other kids, such as pushing, kicking, tripping and hitting. Reviews of these experiments, called metaanalyses, show violent video games increase aggression in males and females of all ages, re-

gardless of where they live. Violent games also desensitise players, making them numb to others’ suffering. But lab experiments can’t be used in every instance. The researcher might not be able to control some variables - such as what video games participants play - to assign participants groups, randomly, to play a violent or non-violent game, or to measure violent behaviour, such as assault. While there isn’t complete consensus in any scientific field, one particular study revealed that more than 90% paediatricians and about 66% of media researchers agreed that violent video games do increase children’s aggression. Additionally, several cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have found that while exposure to violent media isn’t THE cause of extreme violent behaviour, it does increase the aggression risk.

There is obviously a difference between the virtual and real world, but no theory can predict that exposure to violent media can impact the way children think, feel and behave. Violence is a dominant theme in many forms of media, such as television and music, and people expect to be affected by the media. If they are not, they are likely to switch off become bored and turn off the screen. In fact, exposure to media violence is also one of the few risk-factors for aggression and violence which policymakers, professionals and parents can actually do something about. We might never know the true cause of a shooting rampage such as the one in Munich. And while there is evidence that exposure to violent video games is linked to aggression, this does not always translate to violent behaviour.

Accion del Sol news

Ronnie’s a cut above! WITH the hot summer days now upon us, this little dog, Ronnie - adopted three years ago by Trevor and Rosie Bull - is walking tall!

They are special, caring owners, who trawled the Internet and found these special booties to prevent Ronnie’s delicate pads from burning on the hot pavements. We love to see how our adopted dogs get on once they leave the refuge. Ronnie is their second dog from us - Rico was adopted initially - and together, life is one big playtime for them. It is so heartening for us to hear such happy stories, from our supporters, knowing that the dogs here go to such kind, loving homes. Decade of delight Last Thursday, 21st

July, was a special day for Accion del Sol because it was 10 years to the day that we first opened our refuge gates here in Tenerife. During that time, we have helped thousands of dogs from the streets, many of whom from appalling conditions. We have nursed them back to health patiently, and many have been rehomed. Unfortunately, though, we still have nearly 30 dogs which have spent there entire lives in the refuge, but they have the best possible life we can provide for them. Many of these older dogs can now eat tinned meat only, so if you would like to donate any food for them, please come along with your offering and say hello to them. We are always looking for dog-walkers so if you have a little spare time then please do come to the refuge and make a dog very happy.

Who’s for walkies? We are always looking for dog-walkers, and, if you have a little spare time, please pop along to the refuge and make a dog or two very happy. Your help needed Please call the refuge on 922 778 630 if you can lend a hand in any way. We always need blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the north-bound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. Power cuts do happen occasionally in Tenerife, normally without warning. But in a rare public advisory, Endesa is giving the public a heads up on some essential work. This will mean a power shortage on a grid in Los Cristianos. This will be on Tuesday August 2nd from 6am until around 11am. This will black out the following streets and avenues: Alley Leandra, Dulce Maria Loinaz, Groyne, La Habana, Jesus Dominguez Grillo, Juan Bariajo, Juan XXIII, Lucila Barrios, La Montana, Paseo Las Vistas, Peatonal Cabezo, Ramon Pino, Rincón del Puerto, San Roque, San Roque El Cabezo, and Suecia and San Telmo.

Cats Welfare news

Rescuing new-born kittens THE kitten season here in Tenerife goes on and on because of our warm climate. And female cats can give birth all year round.

But Tenerife’s main season runs from Easter until around October. During this period, it is not unusual for nests of unattended kittens to be spotted, or just one baby, seemingly abandoned by the mother. You’re sure to want to rescue them, but, first, please consider these recommendations. Wait & watch You might come across the kittens while their mother is off searching for food, or is in the process of moving them to another location. Try to determine if she is coming back for them, or whether they truly are orphaned. To do this, stand far away from the kittens, 10 metres or more. If you stand too close, the mum will not approach her kittens. You might need to go away completely before the mother cat will return to attend to the

kittens, and it could take several hours … until she no longer senses the presence of humans hovering near her litter. Healthy kittens can survive this period without food as long as they are warm. But if you need to leave before mum comes back, evaluate carefully whether the kittens are in immediate danger. Is it raining, or are they in full sun? Are dogs or other animals which might harm the kittens running loose in the area? Does the area have children or adults likely to harm the kittens? Are they in an area with heavy foot or car traffic? If they are in grave

danger, remove them immediately, but their mum offers the kittens’ their best survival chance, so wait and watch as long as you can. Remember, the best food for baby kittens is their mother’s milk. If mum returns… If the area is relatively safe, leave the kittens alone with mum until they are weaned. You can offer a shelter and regular food to mum, but keep these at a distance from each other. Mum will find the food but will not accept your shelter if the food is nearby, because she will not want to attract other cats to food located near her nest. Contact Cats Welfare

so that we are aware of the litter, because we can offer support and advice if needed. Five to six weeks is the optimal age to take the kittens from the mother for socialisation and adoption placement. This is when we will remove them, and, after assessment, put them up for adoption. Female cats can become pregnant with a new litter, even while they are still nursing. If the kittens are removed without catching the mother at the same time, she is likely to move away from the area, so we won’t be able to catch her and neuter her. Thus, it’s important the removal is coordinated.

If mum doesn’t return If you discover that, for any reason, mum is not coming back, please ensure the kittens are safe. Take a photo so we can assess their age, and contact us immediately. We will attempt to find someone to bottle-feed the kittens if they still need milk. But please note that we do not have a refuge and, also, have few volunteers able to take in new-born kittens. Can you foster? We are always looking for more foster carers and we can supply all the equipment and knowledge you need. We also provide all veterinary care, so there is no worry about having to cover expensive bills. We are often contacted about “tiny” kittens found in the street. Often these end up being three, four or even five months old, and it can be difficult for the lay-person to age them. We have put together a web page which should help people age them more accurately prior to contacting us as its only small kittens that can be successfully homed. All the details can be found at www. cats-welfare-tenerife. com/how-to-age-a-

kitten. All available adult cats are on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife/ pets which offers lots of information and pictures. And we also have kittens for viewing at the Don Perro pet shop in Las Chafiras. Opening times and a map are on our website w w w. c a t s - w e l f a r e tenerife/our-vets. In the North, kittens can be seen at the Kiwoko pet shop in El Trompo commercial centre, just outside Puerto de la Cruz. If you are looking for something specific, message or whatsapp Maria on 646 629 129 (9am-6pm, 7 days a week). If we don’t have the colour/sex you want, we can put you on a waiting list. Your donations Do you have anything to donate to help us raise funds? Items can be dropped into our San Blas shop, on Golf del Sur (behind HiperDino). It is open seven days a week (10am-6pm) Saturdays from 11am4pm). If you don’t have transport, or have bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557 and he will arrange collection from you.

Bolt can hold together Rio THE Olympic Village, which opened its doors on Sunday to competitors, will be home to 17,000 athletes and coaches during Brazil’s 2016 Games in Rio, which start next Friday (5th August). But already, apart from the Russian drug scandal enveloping the greatest sporting show on earth, and serious concern over the Zika virus in some quarters, there is a major trouble. Blocked toilets, leaky pipes and exposed electrical wires were just a few of the reasons why Australia’s Olympic delegation refused to move in to the Village, Australian Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller told journalists: “We felt that our building was not safe, because of a combination of plumbing and electrical issues. She said a stress test had been carried out opening taps and turning on lights simultaneously - and they discovered “significant leakages”. Kitty added: “This is my fifth Olympic Games, and I have never experienced a village in this state - or a lack of state of readiness.” She said the athletes would stay in hotels until the problems were fixed. But by Monday afternoon, Kitty said her Australians were pleased with progress made at Olympic Village. “More needs to be done,” she said. “But we expect teams to move in by Wednesday.” Argentina’s Olympic squad were also renting apartments outside the Olympic Village for

some of its athletes. “While the apartments look finished outside, and even inside, when we started testing them, we found some problems that have to do with plumbing and electricity,” said Gerardo Werthein, President of the Argentine Olympic Committee. “In our building, we have five floors and two of them are uninhabitable. We are renting a number of apartments outside the villa in which we will move the technical personnel and staff, so we can guarantee proper accommodations for our team.” The Italian National Olympic Committee went one better by hiring electricians, plumbers and masons to finish off repairs to incomplete areas of their building and ensure “normal” conditions. The Local Olympic Committee admitted there were some problems and said they would be addressed in the next few days. Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of Rio 2016’s organising com-

mittee, said in a statement: “Every Olympic Village, because of its magnitude, needs some adjustments until it becomes perfect. The important thing is that everything will be resolved before the Games, without disturbing the athletes.” As for the British Olympic Association, they acknowledged that while there were some “maintenance difficulties” with the village, the first Team Great Britain athletes began moving in on Tuesday. Numerous safety issues of greater concern have been raised ahead of the Olympics’ opening parade tonight (Friday), including the threat of international terrorism and highcrime levels in the host city. But the major controversy surrounding Rio is the absence - some may say the presence - of Russian competitors. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) - the world governing body - having decided on a blanket ban on Russia over the na-

tion’s desperately-poor doping record, rescinded their ban. They washed their hands of the affair, leaving decisions on individual athletes’ participation with their relevant sports federations. Their announcement followed the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) call for a total Rio ban on Russia in response to an independent report, which that found evidence of widespread, state-sponsored doping by their athletes at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The IOC had said that disciplinary proceedings would be opened against Russian officials mentioned in the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) McLaren report on Monday. The report, produced by Canadian law professor Richard McLaren, described extensive doping and cover-ups across a series of summer and winter Olympic sports - and, particularly, at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, hosted by Russia. The IOC did say this week that it would not organise or give patronage to any sports event in Russia, including the planned 2019 European Games, and that no member of the Russian Sports Ministry implicated in the report would be accredited for Rio. But with these dark clouds hanging over the Games, there comes a golden lining in the mighty, magical Usain Bolt, who says he is ready to light up Rio. The world’s fastest man ever is bidding to

complete an unprecedented “triple-triple” of gold medals, hoping to become the first athlete to win the 100m, 200m AND the 4x100m relay title at three consecutive Olympics. And, casting aside the doping scandal, the Jamaican is ready to deliver a good-news story for track and field. “I know the sport needs me to win, or it needs me to come out on top, and that’s the same thing I want,” the 29-year-old told reporters. “We want the same thing, so I’m just working hard and staying focused.” Bolt cut a relaxed figure as he spoke, showing no signs of selfdoubt after a frustrating year so far. He was forced out of the 200m final at this month’s Jamaican trials with a torn hamstring, although Bolt had clocked a time of 9.88sec over 100m in June. Bolt, who insists he’s feeling no ill-effects from the injury, says he can still run faster than he’s ever ran before ... over 200m at least. When asked if his record-breaking days were behind him after winning a decent 200m in London’s Anniversary Games, he said: “No, I don’t personally think so. I think the 100, for me, is always going to be harder because it’s so technical. It’s all about me getting a good start and executing right, and stuff like that. “But I think always, in 200, there’s room for running faster. So I really want to try to go after the 200m world record this year.”

With Bolt set to turn 30 on the final day of competition at the Games, athletics is facing up to the fact that he can’t go on forever. He admits his body is starting to feel the strain, and that it takes longer to bounce back from injuries. Bolt has previously suggested he would retire after the 2017 World Championships, and he predicts it could be a while before sport sees another athlete of his calibre. “It’s going to be a long time, I personally think, before somebody comes who is as talented as me, to break my records,” he responded when asked about the future of sprinting. “You never know what the future holds, but I don’t think it will be any time soon.” Coming from most people, those words would sound the height of arrogance. But not from this great athlete’s mouth. As well as being a track superstar, he’s also a financial success, ranking 32nd on Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid athletes. A long-term contract with sports brand Puma contributes to his estimated $30m annual earnings. He deserves every cent, so let’s sit back and enjoy his magnificent track presence while we can. Incidentally, someone who can beat Bolt to one record is fellow Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Like Bolt, she won the 100m crown in the past two Olympics … and no one in history has won three in a row. Yet!

Pas-Os pinch pole position PAS O Nadas A, with the only unbeaten Division 1 record, have been in great form so far this season, and they used it to fine effect last Friday as current league leaders Gaffers rolled in to Los Abrigos.

The match saw some quality darts from both sides, but the home team’s consistency gave them an emphatic 6-2 victory

IT has been a very busy few weeks for CD Tenerife. Firstly, the new president is the old president. Miguel Conception, the wily old fox, won the election for another five years. And one of his first moves was, finally, to give the football stadium a proper name. Well, a proper sign if you like. The signings have been steady and we have halfa-dozen new players. We will have the full preview in two weeks, but one of them has already been making the news. And for all the wrong reasons. Marc Crosas could be a key player this season. The combative midfielder, who has been around the block, even had a spell at Celtic. He has been busy integrating himself into the squad … and into the world news headlines! Last Friday afternoon,

to leapfrog Gaffers and open up a fourpoint lead. Nadas’ Richard notched his fourth 180 of the campaign, while Daniel replied with his third. The Pub now have Gaffers in their sights after thumping PSB 7-1, and Spear Chuckers are just a point further back after beating Exiles. Jamie fired in his first maximum for Exiles in that one. Division 1 draw specialists Scruffy Macs were at it again after losing the trebles leg to tie at Boothen, and Phoenix, who had oldboy Johnny back in their ranks, enjoyed a 6-2 win over Sandys Reborn. Now then, does anyone want to win Division 2 because you’ll love it in Division 1? Just four points separate the top seven teams, and sitting pretty at the top, unbeaten, and with a game in hand, are Emerald Lounge. They put seven past

A fishy tale

Tenerife’s footballers went for a jog on Las Teresitas beach. Since he already had the beard, Crosas decided to go full-on Tom Hanks in Castaway. Running topless, he

somehow found a sharp stick and decided to do some off-the-cuff spearfishing. Showing that there is nothing wrong with his reflexes, he bags a fish first time … but not just any fish.

He manages to spear a Squatina squatina, or an angel fish, as it’s more commonly known. The angel fish is a distant relative to a species of endangered sharks, and it’s a big no-

cles 12 and 18 of Regulation EU, N: 40/2013) and in Spain, through two ministerial orders of 2009 (ARM / 1647/2009 and ARM / 2689/2009). “Under this legislation, the capture, keeping on board, landing or marketing of angel fish is prohibited.” How’s your luck? Crosas swiftly reacted on his Twitter account, saying: “I apologise for the mistake. I will accept the consequences.” Tenerife captain Suso backed him up, saying: “It’s unfair. It’s not as though we know all the marine species, or what is protected.” The club said “We apologise for the unfortunate incident on the beach of Las Teresitas and regret the damage caused.” I bet Crosas wished he had been on Tom Hanks’ desert island last weekend!

The A’s have it

IT’S a measure of how close the competition is in the Direct Telecom Pool League that just two sides have won their opening two matches in division one.

Both will expect to be challenging for the title at the end of the season - and even at this stage, a couple of points’ advantage can prove decisive. Defending champions Gaffers A faced noisy neighbours Gaffers B and it was another fine battle. Kev gave the A team the lead, only for Wilson to level as he eased past Lee. Top Six Dave and Neil reasserted for A, only for Rich to win frame five and make it interesting. But that was as good as it got for the “junior” team as the champions found their form to take the next three racks. This gave Neil the luxury of resting himself and, though the B team levelled the last set, the 8-4 scoreline said it all. Treehouse A have started well for the second successive season. They were far too

sharp for an Exiles A team who don’t always travel well. Only Paul and Jay dropped frames for the hosts, who showed no mercy. Ben and Mark took the consolations for Exiles. Treehouse A will find it much tougher this Tuesday when they travel to face a Palms A side who pulled off a fine draw at Tenerife Hammers A a few days ago. This is the longeststanding fixture in the league, and there have been some real dingdongs over the years. This one was up with the best of them. The early frames were shared as Palms new boy Simon and captain Roscoe matched wins for Paul and Del. Then the Hammers went up a gear. There was little in the frames, but they reeled off three on the trot, and, at 5-2, the writing was on the wall. Or so it seemed. The Palms skipper got the better of Craig, and, when Simon chinned Paul, it was all to play for at 5-4. A vital frame 10 went to the visitors when Wez went in-off the black. Craig’s long black saw him past Darren to set up an intriguing last frame. JT was fast out of the traps and, when Fritzel made an

uncharacteristic error, the Palms man delivered a match-levelling frame clearance. It was the right result. In Puerto Colon, Rewind A got their season under way at home against Terrace Bantams. On paper, it should have been a tight game, but the Rewind boys were never at the races. They lost the first five frames and never recovered. New captain Wilf also lost all his games as he led, well

kinda, his team to a 9-3 defeat. Meanwhile, in Los Abrigos, Rewind’s other team, Rewired, showed real grit and determination to fight back from 5-2 down to win 7-5. It was mixture of some gritty pool from Rewired and some poor shot selections from the hosts. How many times has it been said in this league? It’s not missing, but what you miss that makes the difference. There was a Los Cristianos derby on Tuesday as Bluebell A travelled 30 metres to Dreamers. There was a gulf between them last season, but that was then. This time around it was water-tight, even if Bluebell rode their luck. Nothing quite like a double off the top cushion nestling in the middle bag, to annoy your opponents! There was never more than a frame between them and at the death Tommy beat Ian to

spare the hosts blushes and pinch a draw. Division Two is a little lopsided with The Crown and Hoppys A not starting their campaigns until this week. That said, it already seems to be set up to be rather tight, as it was last season. Picassos are a good yardstick, and they brought out the best in new boys Yates, who have racked up back-to-back draws. After losing the first two frames, the Starco squad bagged the next four. And all with different players, which shows the depth they will have this campaign. Wayne stopped the rot for Picassos, only for Chris to take another for Yates and make it 5-3. Back came Picassos with Stevie, Mark and Wayne, again, edging them ahead. However, captain Lee calmly despatched Roy to get his team a point. What a difference a week makes! Just seven days after getting whitewashed by Picassos, Exiles B dusted themselves down and beat pre-season favourites James Hammers C 7-5! You could say they were smoking! Whatever it was, it worked.

From 2-1 down the Exiles, inspired by Tomas - who would complete a hat-trick - fired it back to first 3-2 then 6-4. Hammers were stunned, and when Tomas beat Lee, the cheer could be heard all over Silencio. The biggest squad in 10 years of this pool league has to belong to Palms Rebels. Every week, there seems to be a couple more of them! This week they unveiled their smart new shirts, and it inspired them to a fast start against Splash Bar. But it didn’t last. With new Guv’nor Martin in their ranks, the Malibu Park posse slowly nudged ahead and held on 7-5 to start their campaign with three points. Last but by no means least, Bluebell B got their campaign under way in Los Cristianos with a fine point at home to Treehouse B. Two of the more ‘social’ teams, they are both capable on their day. The result was fair, which sets them up nicely for this week’s games. Treehouse B will have their first home match against Splash Bar, and Bluebell B will also enjoy home comfort.

Pensions Jargon Buster! We always encourage people to speak to us about pensions, but we also understand that industry jargon can quickly make a conversation seem bewildering. To someone who is trying to understand a new area of investment it is important that any advice is clear and carefully explained. Here we demystify some of the terms most used in the pensions industry and explain what they mean.

State Pension The State Pension is a regular payment from the Government. It is based on your National Insurance contributions. Most people can claim the State Pension when they reach State Pension age. The April 2016 changes to the State Pension now mean that there are two different systems for claiming. Personal Pension With a Personal Pension you choose the provider and make arrangements for your contributions to be paid. Like the SIPP below, you have control of where the money is invested. Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) A SIPP is a scheme which you set up yourself. If you set up your own SIPP you have control of what contributions you make and where the pension money is invested. This type of pension may be useful if you have a number of pension pots and want to consolidate them in one place. Group Personal Pension (GPP) A personal pension may be offered through your employer. These are called group personal pensions. Members in a GPP build up a personal pension pot, which they then convert into an income at retirement. Defined Contribution With a defined contribution pension you build up a pot of money that you can then use to provide an income in

retirement. The income you get depends on the amount you pay in, the fund’s investment performance and the choices you make at retirement. Defined Benefit Defined benefit schemes, also known as ‘final salary’, promise a specific income linked to your number of years’ service and final salary. Annuity An annuity is income bought from a provider using your pension pot. An annuity can be purchased to run for the rest of your life, or for a fixed period. Joint Life Annuity As with annuity above but is paid to your spouse after you die.

Enhanced Annuity If you have a life-limiting condition, you may secure a higher rate of guaranteed income called an Enhanced Annuity. The higher rate reflects the fact you may not live as long as a healthy person. Drawdown Drawdown of income allows you to take an income from your pension savings. The remainder would remain invested. Tax-Free Lump Sum The tax-free lump sum is the sum which you can take, without being taxed, from your pension. This amount is usually 25% Lifetime Allowance The lifetime allowance refers to the total amount you can invest in your pension. This is currently £1 million.
