Rajoy’s patience pays off big time Continued from Front Yesterday (Thursday), Mariano Rajoy - PM from 2011 until last year - agreed a deal with Albert Rivera’s Ciudadanos, which will see the Popular Party leader form a minority government.

The two parties had been in discussions for a week, and the Ciudadanos leader said his party would back Rajoy, but only if he agreed to six guarantees.

This was seen a massive stumbling block by many pundits, but after a meeting that lasted just 70 minutes, both men revealed that a deal had been done.

A beaming Albert Rivera told reporters how “pleased” he was with the Rajoy meeting. “I have asked him to sign the anti-corruption pact, and he assured me he would sign it,” said Rivera.

“It’s the time for negotiations to end, to talk about Spaniards and their problems. Being useful is much more important that believing that you are important.

“If there are any politicians who are banking on a third general election, I want to say that they must banish that from their minds.

“This country is going to establish a minority government and a working parliament. There are some who are playing with the patience of Spaniards. It is the time to start work.”

This was a barbed comment at the socialist PSOE party and its leader, Pedro Sanchez,

who had been keen to block the inauguration process to force a third general election.

The new deal will see Rajoy and his current “acting” Government being sworn in, but not as part of a coalition with Ciudadanos.

Rivera will ensure his ‘votes’ go to the Popular Party at the swearing-in ceremony, “for the greater good of the country”. Rivera is too far apart from Rajoy, politically, to form a coalition that will appease his party. But he hasn’t ruled out backing the Government on issues he believes are right.

In essence, it’s cherrypicking politics.

Rivera’s olive branch to Rajoy leaves Sanchez and Podemos, the fourth party, in no-man’s-land.

Rajoy won both General Elections, but, under Spain’s proportional representation system,

he was not even close to getting a majority.

But it’s still a complete victory for Rajoy, and one that many people thought was beyond him.

The PSOE party was happy to form a coalition, but only if Rajoy quit. But the acting PM held firm. He secured an increased share of the vote in the second election, and, quite rightly, said the country had given him a mandate to lead.

In no mood to back down, he bided his time and is now rewarded.

Rajoy, never a man of many words, said: “The meeting was very cordial. I will now talk to the leader of the Congress, and we will work on an inauguration date. I will also speak with Snr Sanchez and ask him to get behind this.”

Technically, Sanchez

can still find ways to stall this process, and Rajoy is, cleverly, making sure the public, already weary of this long, drawn-out process, knows who will be to blame in the event of a problem.

And it would be career suicide for Sanchez if the PSOE party did try to stop proceedings.

The breakthrough came about because Ciudadanos sensed a chance to pounce and make some real political capital. While Podemos and PSOE grandstanded, Rivera pulled an ace from the top of the pack.

By demanding six key guarantees, all of which were voter-friendly, he could make himself a man of the people. The six points, which many thought would not be agreed by Rajoy, were not up for negotiation.

Point one required the

PP to expel anybody charged with corruption from the party. The next point demanded an end to amnesties for those found guilty of corruption. The third point called for a parliamentary inquiry into the infamous Barcenas corruption scandal.

The next point called for greater transparency in the way the political parties draw up their lists of candidates: an end to jobs for the boys!

Point five called for an end to the privilege that prevents MPs from being tried by courts, and, finally, an Americanstyle maximum twoterms in office for prime ministers.

Most citizens would call them fair, and this agreement of the terms will shake up politics in Spain, from the top to the bottom.

The modernisation was one of the key

points in the Cuidadanos election prospectus.

Rajoy’s green light has delighted many commentators, including Jesús Lizcano, President of the Spanish branch of corruption watchdog Transparency International.

He said: “In other countries, politicians stand down because it is demanded by society, and understood by politicians that this is what they must do.

“There is a conceptual, structural, and institutional difference in other countries. We are the exception with regard to many things in the rest of Europe.”

Not any more, it seems!

So what happens now?

Today (Friday), Mariano Rajoy will talk with the President of Congress, Ana Pastor, to set a date for the investiture debate.

This is the constitutional point where the votes, or number of MPs who approve the proposal of a new government, happens. This will be after the regional elections in Cataluna and will, probably, be in late September.

The slight delay will also give Rajoy and Rivera time to make sure the other parties don’t start messing around.

Meanwhile, the agreed ‘anti-corruption conditions’ will be firmedup by both parties at a meeting with party elders.

Once agreed, it will be the first piece of business after the swearingin and opening of the new parliament.

New jobs’ scheme boosts youngsters A TOTAL of 25,954 Canarians under 30 have been given a real jobs’ boost, with a Government aid scheme launched by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security.

It will go towards job training and helping their long-term prospects. And these measures, implemented by the Spanish Government to boost youth employment, are already benefiting 14,339 youngsters in the province of Las Palmas and 11,615 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The Spanish Government approved the new “Strategy for Entrepreneurship and Youth Employment” at the start of the year, and funds are now flowing into the

system. The plan will embrace action on the training and improving of jobless youngsters through schemes from both the state and the autonomous communities. And, along with funding their training, each youngster will receive 50 euros.

Nationally, these actions have benefited 727,027 young people with employment opportunities.

And, following EU recommendations, the scheme has also been launched by the National System of Youth Guarantee for under-29s who neither study nor work known as ‘ninis’ - which has already enrolled more than 314,856 people.

Holidays lead to extra hotel staff TENERIFE’S tourism sector generated 78,557 more work contracts between January and July, compared with figures from the same period last year.

The Cabildo reported that, according to the Canarian Employment Observatory data, the

hotel industry represents 77.8% of all new contracts signed in the period.

Growth occurs in both hosting services, with 17.4% more contracts offered, while in the food and beverage services, there was a 13.4% increase.

La Gomera reaps tourism bonanza TOURISM is booming in Tenerife, and now La Gomera is getting in on the act. Official figures released this week show that the island closed July with an occupancy rate of 70%.

And that figure is set to explode this month to over 90% … and could even reach 100% in September!

La Gomera’s main hotels have expressed their delight at these results, and they expect an increase in these figures this month and beyond. According to the hotel owners, it will be an “excellent month” for the sector.

La Gomera Cabildo President Casimiro Curbelo, said: “After reviewing this data, it is clear to see that La Gomera is a preferred destination for domestic and European tourists.”

Curbelo has expressed his satisfaction that these figures also repre-

sent a “great economic boost to the island. And this helps all sectors”.

By municipality, Valle Gran Rey had the highest occupancy rate last month of 82%, while the rate in the other municipalities averaged around 80%.

These figures add up to a massive increase of almost 20%, compared with the same 2015 month.

La Gomera Cabildo said the rise was the result of a big increase in the arrival of German and British tourists to

the island this summer.

And Cabildo chief Curbelo added that these figures reflected the success of promotional policies, developed from the Department of Tourism, which focused on the European market.

US drink-drive killer is captured in Spain AN American man, on the run for the past three years after a drink-driving crash which killed a youngster, has been arrested in Spain with a fake Mexican passport.

Christopher Ponce was drunk when he drove against traffic on a Florida interstate on 19th June 2012 and slammed head-on into another car, killing 20-year-old William Angel and injuring two others.

Ponce, then 22, had already racked up 10 previous traffic convictions, including reckless driving

and a drink-driving offence.)

He was out on bail, awaiting trial for manslaughter, when he removed his anklemonitoring bracelet, possibly while receiving a hospital scan for a broken ankle, and disappeared in 2013.

Wade Angel received a call last Wednesday, telling him his son’s killer had finally been caught. “My wife was getting ready to leave

for work,” he said, at his Florida home in Wesley Chapel.

“She was in her car in the garage getting ready to back out, and I yelled so loud that she heard me and came running into the house, thinking something was wrong.”

Mr Angel said police in Almería, Spain, noticed a man at a bus station acting “suspicious and weird”, so they asked him for identification.

Ponce was alleged to have given them a forged Mexican passport and a bus pass with another person’s name on it, said Mr Angel.

Fingerprints revealed his true identity and that he was listed in an Interpol fugitive database.

Spanish authorities contacted Florida’s state attorney’s office, who told Wade’s parents about the arrest.

Mark Cox, spokesperson for the state’s attorney in Tampa told The Daily Beast newspaper that US Marshals are beginning extradition talks with Spain.

Ponce could return as soon as next month or not until the end of the year, depending on whether he fights extradition, he added.

“He had to have had help,” said Mr Angel.

“Christopher didn’t have a job, he didn’t have any money - and it takes money to escape.”

After Ponce vanished, the Angels became fixated on finding their son’s killer.

Wade launched FindChrisPonce.com and spent his evenings searching for him on social media. He pasted Ponce’s mugshot everywhere, even on billboards.

And television host John Walsh even highlighted the case on his CNN series about fugitives. But the campaign attracted unwanted attention.

People emailed the family’s website ‘Tip Line’ with “fake reports, people saying ‘Oh, he’s here, I talked to him, he said you’ll never catch him, blah, blah, blah,’” said Mr Angel.

He wrote on his website: “We found out it’s just some wacko that likes to call 911 all the time and report things. The longer this

goes on, the worse it is.”

So when the local state attorney’s office called Wade on Wednesday morning to announce that Ponce had been captured in Spain, the news brought him back to the horrific night of his son’s death.

The Angels remember their son’s compassion. William was an active volunteer at a local hospital, helping children through the emotional process of surgery. His highschool classmates called him “Big Brother” for his 6ft 1in stature and his warmth.

“His smile would light up a room,” Mr Wade wrote on his website. “He could cure you with one of his hugs.”

Orca passes the big test at Loro Parque LORO Parque has strengthened its commitment to research by hosting the first noninvasive tagging test on cetaceans, placing an innovative belt at the end of orca Keto’s tail.

Santander slash savers’ interest THE Santander bank in the UK is halving the 3% interest customers can earn from its popular 123 current account.

This account is a flagship offering from the bank, enabling customers to claim cash-backs on household bills for a £5 monthly fee - and this feature will not be affected by the interestrate change.

The cut follows a Bank of England move to reduce the base interest rate to an historic low of 0.25% at their monthly meeting earlier this month.

Following that decision, Santander guaranteed it would not be reducing interest rates on their savings accounts by more than the Bank’s 0.25% reduction. But it made no such promises regarding its current accounts.

The change, which comes into effect on 1st November, provides customers with more than the required 60day notice period to allow them to switch account provider if they want to. And it will apply to balances of up to £20,000.

Customers banking with the 123 account around 3.8 million people worldwide - will see a huge difference in their returns once the reduction comes into effect.

Savers who would have earned £600 in interest annually on an account balance of £20,000 will now receive just £300.

But some industry commentators say customers should think

twice about switching providers until closer the deadline because many other banks may follow suit and reduce the rates on their own high-interest current accounts in the meantime.

Martin Lewis, of MoneySavingExpert. com said: “The most important warning for existing Santander 123 savers is don’t close it in anger now - not just to grab the next 2½ months of high interest, but because, unfortunately, it is likely Santander is just at the vanguard of rate cuts.

“Its main competition, the other banks with high interest accounts, may well cut those, too.”

Dr. Javier Almunia, Deputy Director of Loro Parque Fundación, and Rafael Sánchez, Head Trainer of OrcaOcean, viewed positively the initial viability of a noninvasive marking system, compared with the traditional tagging, in which harpoons are used that cause discomfort and potential injuries to the animal.

Without these sort of tests, it would not be possible to determine that the design is appropriate for use.

Therefore, it has been noted that Loro Parque’s orcas contribute to scientific research and to data-gathering that benefits cetaceans in the wild, performing a role of ambassadors of their species.

The great south Population boom

THE South of Tenerife is booming in more ways than one, because the tourist explosion has led to a population boom!

The economic pull of tourism, and everything relying on that, has had a direct impact on population growth in areas close to the tourist

resorts. The Canarian Institute of Statistics (Istac) suggests that the population of the South will continue to rise 7.5%, year-on-year, until 2019.

It released a report this week which scrutinises Archipelago figures, and the Institute now believes Tenerife South will have population growth up to 2019 which will be almost

three times that of the metropolitan area, and nearly twice that of the Island’s Northern region.

The projection points to a 7.5% increase in the number of residents in the South, year-on-year, in the next four years.

But it’s just a 3.9% rise for the North municipalities and 2.6% for the metropolitan area.

Specifically, the South

population will jump to around 350,000 in 2019, according to Istac calculations, based on certain variables, and evaluating the progress of recent years.

As for the North, the increase will take the figures up to 268,500 inhabitants, while in the metropolitan area (Santa Cruz, La Laguna, Tegueste and El Rosario), the expansion

will be slight, raising the number to around 436,500.

If these figures are accurate, the Government and Town Halls will have to look carefully at the infrastructure.

Many residents already believe there is a shortage of housing in the South, and that’s before factoring in affordability.

Also, the main roads

are struggling to cope with today’s numbers, and the same goes for public transport and public car-parking spaces.

New record highs this year of around 14 million visitors are forecast, and even the most yearon-year increases could see this topping 15 million by 2019.

Traffic accidents fall Nasa moon-sample bag

THERE are plenty of accident blackspots in Tenerife, and barely an hour goes by without some sort of incident on the TF-1.

However the number of traffic accidents is falling, reveals official figures!

The reduction in accidents is greatest in the North, with La Laguna drivers leading the way.

The number of “moderate-to-serious” incidents there has fallen in a year from 196 to 145.

Specifically, in the first half of 2015, 58 accidents were recorded in avenue Los Menceyes, compared with 40 in the same period of 2016; ditto Cuesta-Taco, where there were 46 incidents in this period of 2015 and 38 in 2016. This vein actually continues on to the eight busiest roads

in the region. Citizen Security Councillor Jonathan Dominguez said it was down to “hard work and education, along with action and awareness campaigns to reduce the drivers’ speed”.

He added: “We are seeing the benefits now. In this area, for example, we have placed adverts, and there are more radar traps and a greater police presence in these 10 routes.”

Dominguez stressed that not only have the latest annual figures been positive, but “in

the last five years, the decline has been there.

From 2011, we can see the campaigns have worked.”

He said they will now intensify and double efforts to catch speeders, with more speed controls. This week, the municipality also unveiled a new 100,000euro project, which will keep the ball rolling.

This will see more static speed cameras in the region and also a new, road-safety education campaign in the neighbourhoods and schools.

The bag, used to collect moon samples in 1969, was sold by mistake last year because of a clerical error.

It was snapped up by Illinois collector Nancy Carlson for just $995 (around £700), but NASA says it’s a price-

less “rare artifact, if not a national treasure”.

Nasa officials realised the mistake only when Ms Carlson sent the bag back for authentication.

The agency decided to keep it, and is now working with federal prosecutors to reclaim legal ownership. Meanwhile, Ms Carlson has launched her own lawsuit against Nasa to reclaim the bag.

Apollo 11 was the first successful space mission to land humans on the moon- in 1969. The momentous

event saw Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spend several hours on the surface, gathering more than 20kg of lunar material to return to Earth.

The bag itself still has fragments of lunar debris embedded in its material, but it’s not the first time it has been surrounded by controversy.

In 2005, a Kansas space centre director was found guilty of stealing and auctioning space artefacts loaned

by Nasa.

During the investigation, space agency officials found the Apollo 11 lunar bag inside his garage.

The latest mix-up was caused by two items in Nasa’s inventory having the same identification number - and the wrong item was sold!

Is Twice nice?

SO, it seems, we will finally have a Prime Minister in Spain in the next few weeks. It has been a total farce and, if there is one good thing to come out of it, it’s the hope that the UK never goes for proportional representation.

First past the post is not perfect, but at least we all know where we stand. I’ve written in this column before about the long-term probability of the British political landscape changing. Watching the Labour party tear itself apart, and the fall-out from Brexit with the Tories, it’s closer than you think.

There was one interesting point in this week’s agreement between Rajoy and Rivera: the new concept of a Prime Minister serving a maximum of two terms.

I’m not convinced it works. In America the President spends his first term trying to get re-elected. And then spends the second doing whatever he wants, safe in the knowledge

that he or she doesn’t have to face the electorate.

Leaders work harder for the public when they have to face them.

It’s the same argument with the standard of the opposition. Look at Tony Blair in 1997 or Theresa May today.

They can literally do whatever they want because there is no opposition, or even a chance of them getting voted out.

In modern politics, it’s very rare for an American president to get dumped after a first term. Most voters look at it as a two-term cycle.

George Bush Snr was the last “one-termer”, and he was also the last Vice-President to get the big job.

That’s not a coincidence.

Russia has a law on how long you can run the country, not that that has stopped Putin, of course. And there are many who feel that a vote for Hillary is really a vote for Bill.

Only history will show whether the new “twoterm” leader legislation will work in Spain.

Mind you, it’s taken eight months just to re-elect this one!

Canarians going mad for mobiles PEOPLE living in the Canaries spend more time daily on their mobiles than those in any other Spanish region.

On average, we use our devices 4.72 hours a day, which is 30 minutes more than the national average, according to a rastreator.com study.

addict. And two out of three say they could not live without a mobile device.

Survey spokesperson Fernando Summers, said: “The mobile phone has been integrated into our daily lives to such an extent that many people cannot see themselves going about their daily activities without using it at some point.

According to 25.7% of study respondents, “residents in the Canary Islands could not

go more than a day without using a mobile phone,” said Summers.

“And 11.3% admit their time limit without using the mobile phone would be five hours maximum.”

Finally, the study reflected that 21.7% of the Canary Islands population look at their mobile more than 10 times an hour.

And, incredibly, 9.3% consult it more than 20 times in that time.

That’s once every three minutes!

At last, firms are finding their feet CANARIAN businesses have taken time to recover, but there are more than a few signs that the coming years will bear fruit.

The economy crashed in 2008, hitting many businesses and sectors hard. But slowly, everything is starting to come together again.

Bars and restaurants still make up the majority of businesses in the Archipelago, although

the previous study two years ago, and the jump shows how more dependant we now are on our phones.

In 2014, we used our mobiles for 2.39 hours a day. Now,though, the number of residents in the Canaries spending more than five hours on their mobiles is over 30%.

But despite heading the rankings in terms of mobile-phone use, only one in 10 Canary Island dwellers believes that he or she is a phone

the number of companies has dropped in the last 10 years. But the much-maligned construction industry has picked up in the last two years.

At the start of 2016, the Canaries had 135,909 companies – an improvement on 2014 and the second successive increase since the recession began.

In 2015, they had grown from 128,518 to 132,857. But despite improvements in the last two years, the number of companies is still short of the 2008 figure,

when there were 143,471 firms. But the biggest rise in business is the proliferation of self-employment.

Data released this week from the Central Companies Directory (CCD), published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), shows the evolution that has occurred in the Spanish and Canarian business sector over the last few years.

Since 2008, the trend towards fragmentation has increased. Then, the number of companies without employees

accounted for 50% of the total.

But that has now risen sharply to nearly 60% in the Canary Islands - the third-highest in Spain, after Madrid and Cataluña.

This growth and rise in self-employed “businesses” has not gone unnoticed by the government, or the taxman.

Recent legislation aimed at tightening up loop-holes will see a real shake-up in how many businesses are run, and will lead to big changes in the “casual work” sector.

Car-makers are really motoring SPAIN’s automobile-manufacturing industry is attracting billions of euros in new investments from car makers worldwide.

Germany’s Volkswagen AG and Daimler AG have recently ramped up their production capacity in the country, encouraged by relatively flexible labour laws, and a vast network of local parts suppliers.

And it is a welcome boost for an economy still recovering from years of recession and high unemployment.

“Spain cannot compete with Eastern Europe, but it’s still cheaper than France or Germany and equally competitive,” said Joachim Hinz, financial planning director of SEAT, a brand which Volkswagen bought from the Spanish Government in 1986.

The country may not have a domestic-owned car-maker, but it has become Europe’s secondlargest producer of vehicles behind Germany, and the eighth-biggest in the world.

Spain’s appeal comes largely from labour reforms, enacted in 2012 during the euro-zone crisis, after the conservative Popular Party came to power.

The reforms made it easier for employers to lay off long-time employees and weakened,

collective bargaining agreements.

“The labour reform helped us improve our future expectations,” said Mr Hinz.

Volkswagen said last year it would invest one billion euros in its Pamplona plant, where it will build its next generation of Polo models, adding 500 employees to its 4,500-strong workforce.

Workers agreed to reduce their hourly wage by 50 Euro cents and work one extra day annually, said Eugenio Duque, general secretary of the union representative committee.

German companies poured 4.8bn euros into Spain last year, making the country the secondlargest destination for

German foreign direct investment, behind the US only, according to Di Markets, a publication which specialises in international investment.

And 4bn of that investment went to the country’s auto industry.

The car sector accounted for 8.7% of Spain’s GDP (gross domestic product) last year - up from 5.2% in 2005, according to ANFAC, the country’s association of car manufacturers.

It employs 9% of Spain’s labour force and produced a record 2.7 million vehicles last year, with 80% exported.

Eduardo González, general director in Spain of German carcomponent manufacturer Continental AG,

praises the country’s “highly specialised suppliers,” as well as “a qualified labour force and flexible labour relations to react to swift changes in demand, without resorting to layoffs”.

When, in 2014, Ford chose to close its plant in Genk, Belgium, to move its production of Mondeo, Galaxy and SMax models to Valencia, local suppliers were an important factor. By 2020, Ford’s plan to invest 2.3bn euros in the Valencia plant by 2020, and already, the plant has become the US carmaker’s biggest in Europe.

“Suppliers are a major contributor to the success of our operations in Valencia,” said Linda

Cash, Ford Europe’s vice-president of manufacturing.

Gestamp is the biggest Spanish producer of car components, making bumpers, pedal boxes, chassis and other products in 20 countries.

It expects to post 7% growth in 2016.

Company chief Francisco José Riberas said: “Working alongside diverse companies makes our productive network very versatile and has favoured the investments in R&D in production techniques.”

In Vitoria, northern Spain, Daimler’s secondlargest van plant worldwide is situated. And it’s where the German car-maker produces the Mercedes Vito and VClass mid-size vans. And Daimler has invested one billion euros in the plant since 2012.

Detroit’s General Motors Co, Renault SA and PSA Peugeot Citroën, of France, have also built up an important presence in Spain.

Sergi Basco, an economics professor at Madrid’s Universidad Carlos III, says cheap labour has attracted investment and drawn jobs from more expensive countries further north. But, he stressed, it isn’t a long-term solution.

Spain needs to “reach a national consensus on how to increase the skills of its workers,” said Prof. Basco. “The task,” he added, “won’t be easy.”

Old folk’s helpline

THE Canarian Government, via the Department of Employment, Social Policy and Housing, has launched a helpline aimed at the old and lonely.

This phone service is for the elderly and is a 24 hours a day initiative. The number 900 70 70 20 is already in operation. The idea is that are our senior citizens will be able to talk or listen or ask for advice on any matter.

Canarian Vice President Patricia Hernandez, said the project’s aim was to “combat loneliness and unwanted isolation that many people in the islands suffer from.

“This platform includes the ability to talk, contact and connect with people who are in a state of loneliness, and we can provide information on the different actions of the coping strategies of loneliness.”

She added: “It is not only a listening service, because this phone line will allow us to detect if the elderly are under any type or risk maltreatment, as well as collect complaints about the operation of centres and elderly care services.

“Among the main features of the service is the ease of access, qualified personalised service, confidentiality, privacy and connection with the services of primary and community care.”

The service is available in Spanish only, but there are plans to make English operators available.

Bus-lane scheme will ease congestion woes TENERIFE Cabildo has completed the first round of meetings with the Canarian Government’s Ministry of Public Works, and the municipalities of La Laguna, Tacoronte, El Sauzal, La Matanza, La Victoria, La Orotava and Santa Ursula regarding the proposed new bus-lane project.

The meetings concluded unanimously that the concept was the most viable, mediumterm solution to solve the congestion problems on motorways and popular roads in the North.

Cabildo Directors of Development, Miguel Becerra; Motorway, Ofelia Manjon, and Mobility, Manuel Ortega, are responsible for the main lines of action and the overall operation.

The meetings have established the current status of each municipal planning, enabling those taking part to make a more detailed analysis of the time frame.

Cabildo President Carlos Alonso highlighted the need to de-

fine “a quick way forward”, adding: “It is the responsibility of each administration to advance the project and make it a reality as soon as possible.

“Meanwhile, the Cabildo will continue to progress in the execution of the initial works, which will alleviate this serious problem, affecting thousands of citizens every day.”

But the bus-lane plan isn’t just for buses! It will include access for HGV and similar vehicles, and it could also add some larger, civilian vehicles.

The first phase will improve the links of Coromoto San Benito, Las Chumberas, Lora Tamayo, the link of TF-24 and TF-5, while also extending the TF-5 trunk in the section to the airport.

There will be a 15meuro investment, in addition to other proposals for improvements aimed at reducing demand in the area to the University of La Laguna, along with hospitals and commercial centres.

Slight crime drop, but not for home-owners THE total number of (3,526 cases reported, crimes reported in the Canary Islands during the first six months of the year dropped by 3.0% compared with 2015. That means, officially, there were 44,067 incidents.

However, there was a sting in the tail because robberies in the home were up by 6.6%, especially in the bigger areas such as Arrecife, Arona and Maspalomas.

Data published by the Ministry of Interior for the first six months of the year reveals that there have been reductions in criminal methods used in the Canaries, such as damage

Norwegian setting its sights on Manchester NO R W EG I A N , recently voted Best European Low-cost Airline for the fourth consecutive year, has announced its expansion in the Canary Islands market.

From the end of October, it will fly two new routes, connecting the Tenerife and Gran Canaria airports with Manchester.

The two routes will operate on these days and times: Gran Canaria-Manchester (starting 30th October): Every Friday and Sunday Gran Canaria-Man-

chester (1.10-5.15pm) Manchester-Gran Canaria: (6.05-10.40pm) Tenerife-Manchester (starting 1st November): Every Tuesday and Saturday Tenerife-Sth Manchester (10am-2.25pm) Manchester-Tenerife Sth 3.05-7.30pm) It means that Norwegian will now feature 20 Tenerife routes -18 in

the South airport and two in the North - four of which are to the UK, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and London Gatwick.

It has been a fine few years for the airline, which operated its first flight in Spain in only 2003 and now offers a total of 140 routes. And the company is based in 14 Spanish airports.

Short-staffed Guardia Civil simply cannot cope with workload

THE Unified Association of the Guardia Civil (AUGC) this week denounced a situation it says is getting worse and worse.

Every summer, the AUGC makes public its concerns about under-staffing and low resources. But this year, it seems, the problem is even worse than in 2015.

In its view, “the increasing cuts in the number of troops that remain in service during the months of July and August is a serious problem.

“We are overwhelmed with work, and the staff is unable to properly address the assigned tasks.”

The Association also specifies that staffing levels in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which embraces Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma,has

just 87% coverage. In real terms, this adds up to about 1,400 agents, of whom, one-third are on holiday.

The AUGC said in a press release: “The situation is particularly serious in a territory like the Canary Islands, with a high tourist level and a high hotel-occupancy in summer.

“This is something that, unfortunately, occurs in the whole of Spain, since the movement of the popula-

tion towards the usual holiday areas, especially the coast, is not adequately offset by a strengthening of the number of bodies on the street.

“Also, since the Guardia Civil service has one-third on summer holidays, the agents are reduced even further.”

The Association claims that the manpower shortage has led to the average age of the workforce falling.

It also demands “a re-

organisation in human and material resources”.

It adds: “Successive governments have refused to implement these measures for mere reasons of political advantage, by advocating a situation that is increasingly chaotic.

“The safety of the citizens is, in the main, impaired, as evidenced by the numerous complaints received over the lack of attention.”

Gun husband shoots at wife and daughter A MAN shot his ex-wife and attempted to shoot their daughter before turning the gun on himself outside a shopping centre in Zaragoza, Northern Spain.

The shock attack happened at around 11am time last Friday after the daughter and her mum, who survived the attack, drove away from a garage in their car.

The former husband was, reportedly, waiting in another vehicle, from which he opened fire.

Witnesses said he then turned the weapon on himself.

Police raced to the scene after reports of shots being fired, and found two people suffering severe injuries.

Earlier reports said a gunman had opened fire injuring two people before fleeing the scene.

But police later confirmed the man shot his ex-wife in front of the daughter before shooting himself.

According to Spanish news agency Europa Press, the husband and wife had recently separated, and the man had no previous criminal record. A bartender told Reuters he heard shots outside the bar and then saw a man with a gun in his hand lying on the ground.

“We heard seven or eight shots and then I heard a car drive away fast,” he added.

According to the AP report, the woman managed to drive herself to a city hospital, while the man was taken there by ambulance.

Spanish and Brits high on stimulant cocktails HUNDREDS of thousands of people in Spain are taking prescription drugs inappropriately: the cocktail of opioids, tranquilisers and stimulants, already a big problem in the US, is fastbecoming one in Europe as well.

A survey of 22,000 people between the ages of 12 and 49 in five European countries showed the extent of the abuse.

Spain was seen to be the biggest consumer of opioids, with 18% of those questioned admitting to taking the drug at some point during their lives, and almost 7% doing so in the last year.

For a few weeks, Danilo González (not his real name), a thirtysomething Spaniard, has been taking the drug Rubifen, which is used on children with an attention deficit and hyperactivity.

Apart from his age, Danilo does not have attention deficit disorder or hyperactivity. “Rubifen gives you a high and makes you more lucid,” he says.

“It’s like taking cocaine but less harmful in general.”

Opioids are pain-killers such as tramadol and codeine. The abuse usually happens when someone in pain gets a hold of them through a friend and starts to self-medicate, but they are also used as a party drug.

“Codeine and tramadol are considered chic in Russia,” says José Martínez Raga, a coauthor of the study and psychiatrist at Valencia’s Doctor Peset University. “An overdose produces a stimulating effect.”

Spain is also leading in the consumption of sedatives such as alprazolam (sold commercially as Trankimazin), lorazepam (Orfidal), diazepam (Valium) and bromazepam (Lexatin).

“Some people mix them with cocaine or alcohol,” says Martínez

Raga. “They’re most commonly used by cocaine addicts.”

As many as 18% of those surveyed admit to have taken one or all of these drugs without a prescription at some time, and more than 9% have done so in the last year.

And experts maintain that the improper use of prescription drugs is as much to do with selfmedication as using them to get high.

The new study is featured in the BMC Psychiatry magazine, with data from Britain, Spain, Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

Britain heads the abuse of stimulants such as Rubifen, used primarily to aid concentration during exams.

Of the Brits, 9% admitted to taking stimulants at some point,

while 4% have done so in the past year against 6.8% and 2.4% of Spaniards, respectively.

“There is a lot of research on the phenomenon in the US, but it hadn’t been investigated in Spain and the rest of Europe until now,” says Martínez Raga.

He has calculated that across all five countries surveyed, 13.5% have used opioids at some point, while 5% have done so in the last year; 11% have used tranquillisers at some point and 6% in the last year; and 7% have used stimulants at some stage with 3% using in the last year.

This new research is headed by Scott Novak, of RTI International, a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) in the US,

where the number of people taking one or all of these drugs at some point rises to 20%.

Whether people abuse these drugs seems to have as much to do with where they live as their genetic make-up.

Novak’s team points out that the practice is more common among non-whites and the unemployed.

Obviously, if you have ever been prescribed one of these medicines officially, you are more likely to abuse them 10 times more when it comes to tranquillizers, eight times more in the case of opioids and seven times more with stimulants.

This abuse of prescription drugs is also known as an iatrogenic addiction.

“In Spain, the use of prescription drugs is taken lightly,” says Martínez Raga, hoping to get the message across to national health services.

“In various series on Spanish TV, they talk about taking Orfidal and Trankimazin as if they were candy. In drug campaigns, they should include not only alcohol and tobacco but also prescription drugs.”

And he warns: Teenage years are crucial, and here we, are seeing the problem starting in children.”

Ford’s DIY cars are getting ready to roll LEADING carmakers Ford are planning to massproduce a fullyautonomous, self-driving car without a steering wheel, and an early version will be on the road by 2021.

The bold ambition was outlined by company President Mark Fields at a California event in Palo Alto on Tuesday. And Ford says it will double its investment in its global research centre there.

It will also make size-

able investments in technology companies in the autonomy industry.

The firm says customers will be using the car by 2021, but it adds that it will most likely be as part of an Uberlike, ride-sharing service.

But it will not require a human driver, and, eventually, Ford’s mass-produced, self-driving car will not have a steering wheel. Mr Fields, in an interview with the BBC, said: “As you can imagine, the experience inside a vehicle where you don’t have to take control changes everything.

He added: “Whether you want to do work, whether you want en-

tertainment … those are the types of things we are thinking about as we design the experience for this type of autonomous vehicle.” The announcement, described as “transformational” by Mr Fields, will herald an era in which Ford sees itself, particularly in cities, as a company providing an ad-hoc service, rather than focusing solely on selling the cars to the general public.

“There will be a growing per-cent of the industry that will comprise fully autonomous vehicles,” he said. “Our goal is not only to be an auto company, but an auto and mobility company.”

Wayne Cunningham, managing editor of motoring news website Road Show, told the BBC that Ford’s 2021 pledge was a feasible goal, but one that was intentionally narrow.

“It’s not as an aggressive step as it sounds,” he said. “This is really a car designed for very specific, urban environments. It’s a car that’s going to take people at 20-30 mph through city centres.”

Ford has, in recent years, described itself as a technology company rather than simply a carmaker. And on Tuesday, it genuinely started to sound like one.

Gibraltar’s Yes for same-sex marriage G I B R A LTA R has taken a decisive step towards acknowledging same-sex marriage with its government announcing a draft bill to modify the British Overseas Territory’s Civil Marriage Act.

It made the move on Monday and the bill will now go before parliament, which will approve the legal change in the required six weeks.

Spain introduced same sex-marriage in 2005.

The island’s draft bill follows a popular consultation carried out last December with the Socialist Labour Party and Liberal coalition on the issue of same-sex marriage.

A source in the Gibraltar administration said: “After the community showed its overwhelming support, the date

for the consultation was extended to allow more people to participate.”

So far, some 3,490 people have responded to the consultation, out of the total 24,117 electorate.

The draft bill should have been presented in June, but the UK’s decision to leave the EU, as well as the electorate’s interest in the issue, delayed the government’s decision.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said the consultation process revealed that Gibraltarians are polarised on the issue of same-sex marriage.

“Both sides believe they are right and that the government must support their stance immediately,” he said.

“This delicate issue was so important that I decided to preside over an inter-ministerial committee with the goal of giving careful consideration to all points of view.” he added: “We have not taken this issue lightly and we have given it the

respect it deserves.”

The draft bill to change the Civil Marriage Act gives people of the same sex the same matrimonial rights as heterosexual couples. This was one of the key issues for the Equality Rights Group, which has been fighting for the rights of the LGBT community in Gibraltar.

“It has come very late and there has been a lot of manoeuvring, but it’s arrived and we’re grateful,” said Félix Álvarez, Gibraltar LGBT President. Álvarez, who will now study the draft bill closely, said: “We don’t want a legalised apartheid; we want gay rights to be fully incorporated into the Marriage Act.” The opposing Gibraltar Social Democrats (GSD) said in January that it would support legislation in favour of same-sex marriage.

And Daniel Feetham said his party would continue its long-standing policy of allowing

members of Parliament a free vote on matters of conscience, and that he would defend the right of its members to their own individual opinion.

Marriage, he said, is a very important institution “that binds people who love each other together”. He also said that all GSD MPs were in favour of the state opening this up to same-sex couples.

Gibraltar has autonomy over its laws except for foreign policy and defence. The Rock’s decision to modify the Marriage Act comes three years after the UK approved same-sex marriage in 2013. Until 2010, it was not possible for same-sex couples to live in council-owned property.

In 2014, Gibraltar allowed same-sex civil partnerships, but it does not provide couples with the same rights as under marriage.

Spain introduced same sex-marriage in 2005.

Joint cop bust cracks crooked drugs gang A CRIMINAL gang, using cars stolen from British drivers to transport huge shipments of cannabis from Spain into Britain, via the Eurotunnel, have been smashed, thanks to a joint operation by police from Spain and the UK. The Spanish force have announced that an investigation lasting almost a year has led to 22 arrests in various raids in Spain and Britain.

Among them are 12 British nationals - one of whom is originally from Singapore - nine Spaniards and a German.

The gang’s modus operandi was to steal cars in Britain before driving them to the Barcelona area, where, Spanish police said, they would let them “cool off” for a few months before using them in future operations.

The drugs gang, with the help of various destinations along Spain’s Mediterranean coast, then stuffed the motors with cannabis before driving them northwards and, eventually, back into the UK via the Eurotunnel to sell their illegal wares on

the British market. The joint probe has revealed that the customised cars would each carry around 100kg of cannabis, concealed in special compartments, The operation, in which Britain’s National Crime Agency and Merseyside Police co-operated with Spain’s National Police and Guardia Civil forces, began with the arrest of three people in Britain between October 2015 and February this year.

This initial bust led investigators to a 100kg cache of skunk marijuana in Britain in April, when three more people - including two Spaniards - were arrested.

Days later nine Britons, detained in Alicante, were found to be in possession of 250 marijuana plants and six stolen vehicles.

In recent days, seven more suspects from Britain and Spain have been arrested in a series of raids in Malaga and Barcelona.

The cops also turned up 30 mainly top-of-therange cars, one of which was found to have 55kg of hashish concealed in secret compartments.

Kids had surgery, so mum could cash in!

TWO children were forced to have needless medical procedures by their mother, who claimed thousands of pounds in benefits over a decade.

The 49-year-old, from Croydon, South London, who was sent to prison for 7½ years, lied repeatedly to medical professionals - and claimed more than £375,000 over a 10-year period.

In a “staggering” case of child cruelty, her son and daughter were forced to take unnecessary drugs and suffer invasive treatment, including having tubes fitted in their stomachs.

Judge Elizabeth Smaller said the woman, who can not be named to protect her children’s identity, had shown no remorse.

“I note that you have appeared to be very sad at times during this trial,” added the judge. “But watching you, as I have for three months in court, in my view, it cannot be said

to amount to remorse for what you did.”

During sentencing, she also said that, despite being made aware of all the surgical risks, the mother signed consent forms to ensure it went ahead, without being “filled with the disquiet that most parents would”.

Both children had surgery to fit them with gastrostomy tubes for feeding, despite being able to eat normally, after the woman told authorities they had stomach problems.

The boy was given steroids after she claimed he suffered breathlessness, and she told him to behave as though he had autism. He was also kept in nappies until he was taken into care, when 7½ years of age.

The woman was arrested in 2013 following a three-year investigation, Croydon Crown Court heard.

She was convicted last month of cruelty and fraud, making a false representation and obtaining money transfer by deception.

“The lengths to which you went were creative and well-

thought-through,” said the judge. “They were wilful, prolonged and sometimes elaborate.”

She also said it was “bewildering” that, after years of cruelty the children still loved their mum.

She pointed out: “Despite everything, your children still love you that is no doubt, which makes your exploitation of their unconditional love and trust, for them, all the more serious and bewildering.”

An NSPCC spokeswoman said: “This is an incredibly-distressing case. For a mother to subject her own children to invasive, medical procedures for no reason, other than her own financial gain, is shocking and difficult to comprehend.

“As a mother, her role was to love and nurture her children; not subject them to pain and suffering.

“Their experiences will leave physical and emotional scars, which could affect them for the rest of their lives.

“And it is right that their mother is now facing the consequences of her selfish and cruel actions.”

Children killed by deadly kite strings TWO children and an adult died in horrifying circumstances on Monday when their throats were slit by glass-coated strings, used for flying kites, on India’s Independence Day.

Saanchi Goyal, 3, and Harry, 4, were looking out through the sunroof of their cars in different parts of Delhi when the deadly-sharp strings killed them. And 22-year-old Zafar Khan, 22, died in the same manner when he was riding his motorbike.

Glass-coated strings are used to fly the kites, but they also end up in-

juring and killing people.

Many Indians fly kites to celebrate festivals and important occasions, such as Independence Day, which is held annually on 15th August.

But every year, there are reports of people dying or getting wounded from the kite strings locally known as manja - treated with powdered glass or metal to sharpen them.

Similar strings killed a five-year-old boy last year in the northern town of Moradabad, and a five-year-old girl died in Jaipur in 2014.

These strings also kill and maim hundreds of birds annually - at least 500 have been admitted to the Charity Birds Hospital in Delhi in the

past three days alone, say Indian media reports. And the hospital treats up to 8,000 birds every year.

A Delhi policeman was also injured from a sharpened string on Monday.

The Delhi government, which has now banned the use of sharpened manja to fly kites, has pledged to run campaigns to educate people about the dangers of using such strings.

Authorities say the sale, production and storage of nylon, plastic or any other glassor-metal-coated manja, will be prohibited in the capital city.

Those who defy the ban will be fined 100,000 rupees (£1,148), and could be jailed for up to five years.

Sparkling success scandal of British ‘bubbly’

Cancer treatment CANCER charities claim that thousands of NHS cancer patients are being denied life -prolonging treatments, because innovative treatments in other countries are not available in Britain.

THERE has been an 80% rise in the sales of sparkling wine in the last five years, thanks to Britain’s growing awareness of prosecco and cava.

Accountancy group UHY Hacker Young estimates that 31.6 million gallons of the two wines will have been sold in the 2015-16 period, which is a huge increase from the 17.6m gallons in 2011-12.

Prosecco and cava are among the most popular types of affordable Champagne alternatives, with many bottles selling for under £10.

The majority of sparkling wine is imported from countries such as France, Spain and Italy.

But last year, 37 new wine producers and vineyards opened in England, reflecting the growing recognition of home-grown produce.

Young, said the new figures were a “great boost” for English producers whose products had proved to be a “viable alternative”.

He added: “Not only is the growing success of English sparkling wine encouraging more to come to the market, but more established names are now look-

ing to expand into new stages of growth.

“Vineyards provide businesses with numerous opportunities to diversify and offer additional services such as shops, cafes, wine-tastings, events and weddings, as well as producing wine.

“These add-ons can be effective ways for

new producers to supplement their income, while waiting for their wine to mature.

“It’s uncertain what will happen after Brexit to UK imports of prosecco and Champagne, but what is clear is that no matter what happens, English sparkling wine is already a viable alternative.”

Briton, 22, stabbed to death in Cyprus A BRITISH man died last Sunday after being stabbed in the neck in the Cyprus holiday resort of Ayia Napa.

The 22-year-old, named as George Low, died in the party town on Sunday, and police there said another Briton, also 22, was wound-

ed during the pre-dawn knife attack.

The two men were attacked while walking down a busy street, said Famagusta district assistant police chief Georgios Economou.

The other man suffered four stab wounds to his back which were not life-threatening.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are providing support to the family of a Brit-

ish national who, sadly, died in Cyprus on 14th August. We will remain in contact with the local authorities, who are investigating.”

The International Comparisons of Health Technology Assessment’s report was commissioned by Breast Cancer Now and Prostate Cancer UK. It reviewed the drug systems and the availability of breast and prostate cancer treatments in England, Scotland and Wales compared with five similar countries: Germany, France, Australia, Canada and Sweden.

Baroness Delyth Morgan, Chief Executive at Breast Cancer Now, said: “That NHS patients are being denied access to innovative new breast cancer drugs, while other countries are finding ways to make them available, is totally unacceptable.

“This report demonstrates the need for serious reform of the way our health system assesses - and determines the availability of - the cancer drugs that patients rely upon.”

Sian Slifkin, a wife and mother of two from Stockport, was diagnosed with primary and secondary breast cancer in 2013.

The report recommends that NICE and its Scottish counterpart, the Scottish Medicines Comsortium, should not have the dual role of both assessing the effectiveness of a treatment, and also deciding whether or not it’s cost-effective.

They are also calling for patients to be more involved in the process.

In November 2015, when NICE announced it would not make Kadcyla available through the NHS, Sir Andrew Dillon, NICE Chief Executive, said: “We recognise that Kadcyla has a place in treating some patients with advanced breast cancer, and we have been as flexible as we can in making our recommendation.

“However, the price the manufacturer is asking the NHS to pay in the long-term is too high.”

Old shark may have seen the Mayflower!

SCIENTISTS have discovered a 400-yearold Greenland shark, which means the species would almost certainly have been in the North Atlantic when the Mayflower carried the Pilgrim Fathers to North America.

The Greenland shark is distributed widely across the North Atlantic and now, its lifespan, once a mystery, has been revealed, making it the longest-living verte-

brate known on Earth.

Researchers used radiocarbon dating to work out the age of 28 of the animals, and found that one female was about 400 years old.

In fact, they grow at an incredibly slow rate - about a centimetre a year - and reach sexual maturity at 150.

Sharks are usually aged by counting the growth layers which build up over the various seasons.

But Greenland sharks don’t have these, so the technique cannot be employed.

Some 28 female sharks were accidentally caught during a fish-and-shrimp survey, and scientists analysed each shark’s eyelens nucleus.

The chemical composition of the nucleus allowed the team to work out the creatures’ age.

The study was led by academics from the University of Copen-

hagen, whose research was published in the Science journal.

Lead author Julius Nielsen said: “We used established radiocarbon methods, but combined them in a new way.

“This approach, along with the extraordinary ages for these sharks, makes this study highly unusual.”

The scientists concluded that the average lifespan of the shark was about 270

years. Mr Nielsen added: “Greenland sharks are among the largest carnivorous sharks on the planet, and their role as an apex predator in the Arctic ecosystem is totally overlooked.

“By the thousands, they accidentally end up as by-catch across the North Atlantic, and I hope our studies can help to bring a greater focus on the Greenland shark in the future.”

Ex-football star dies after getting Tasered

FORMER Premier League footballer Dalian Atkinson died, some 90 minutes after being Tasered by police in the early hours on Monday.

The 48-year-old, onetime Aston Villa and Man City and Sheffield Wednesday star, is said to have had a heart attack after police had been called to a residential road in Telford, Shropshire.

Atkinson, who scored 38 goals in 114 appearances for Villa, was hit by a stun-gun in the Trench area of the town Shropshire, at around 1.30am.

Police were called to the family home in Meadow Close, where Dalian grew up, after receiving reports that people were concerned for the safety of a person in Telford.

Officers from West Mercia Police raced to the scene at 1.30am and a Taser was used on Atkinson.

He received medical attention after going into cardiac arrest, but was pronounced dead at around 3am.

The incident has now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Dalian played under Ron Atkinson at Sheffield Wednesday and Villa, and his former boss remembered a happy man, both on and off the pitch.

Big Ron, who masterminded Villa’s unlikely 3-1 victory over Manchester United in the 1994 Coca-Cola Cup Final, when Dalian opened the scoring, recalled: “He always had a smile on his face - and played football with a smile on his face.

“He was popular in the dressing room, had terrific ability and did it in the big games. He did very well for me. I signed him at Sheffield Wednesday and, when I joined Villa, he was one of the first players I wanted to bring in. It’s tragic.”

The ex-striker, who also played for Real Sociedad, grew up in with his parents Ernest and Gloria, who died some years ago.

Ernest, 85, told how his son flew into a boozefuelled rage shortly before he was Tasered by police.

“He was in a real state,” said his father.

“I don’t know if he was drunk or on drugs, but he was very agitated and his mind was upset.

“The last thing he said to me was ‘don’t move’ when the police came to the door. He was threatening and very upset.

I didn’t call the police, but someone else did.

“He got Tasered in the street outside in the road. I didn’t see him but I saw a flash. I haven’t had any sleep and cannot take it in.

The police are dealing with this now.”

Next door neighbour Lascelles Rose, 73, said: “I spoke to his dad this morning - he phoned me to tell me the sad news.

“He was so upset … he just kept telling me, ‘he’s gone’, and, ‘my boy is dead’. He is so heartbroken.

She added: “Dalian had been in hospital recently for a couple of months, he had been

poorly, but I don’t know what with.

“He went to school with my three children and I’ve known him his whole life. He was a good man, who would always be friendly and say hello.

“I used to watch him playing football in the street and you could tell then he had something special. He was one hell of a football player and a top man. I am just in complete shock, trying to process what had happened.

“He was never a trouble-maker or anything like that, and the police had never been round there before. I just can’t understand why this has happened.

“Dalian didn’t live there any more, but he did visit quite a bit. He always kept in touch with his parents and would come and see them, whoever he played for.

“It is such a tragedy.

He was such a talent and such a lovely man.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “I had known him since he was a little boy, and he was a famous footballer at one time. He was friendly, and had no trouble that I know of.”

Forensic officers were at the scene on Monday morning, as Meadow Close remained cordoned off.

Neighbours described “a lot of shouting and police” at the scene.

One neighbour, also anonymous, said the former footballer was hammering on his dad’s door in the early hours.

“There was a lot of banging and shouting, and doors being kicked in,” she said.

“Dalian was shouting about being homeless and he wanted his dad to let him in. But his dad wouldn’t, so he was kicking the door.

“I have no idea why, or what they were fighting about. Then someone phoned the police, and they came - I don’t know exactly what happened after that, but it’s very tragic.

The neighbour added: “I’ve known Dalian since he was a baby. Dalian is a lovely lad - he was always a very nice boy and very nice to talk to.

“His mum died some years ago, and he went away when he was young to do his training as a footballer - he was very successful.”

The ex-footballer was rushed to hospital after police swarmed the

area, and a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “An ambulance was dispatched and upon arrival found a man who had been Tasered.

“As he was being conveyed to Princess Royal Hospital, his condition deteriorated and he went into cardiac arrest.

“Despite efforts, it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead at hospital, shortly after arrival.”

One of Dalian’s childhood friends said the former striker was “never violent” describing him as a “gentle giant”.

Sony Atwal, 47, said: “He was my best friend when we were younger.

We went to primary school together, and grew up together.

“I’ve been speaking to other people on the street - there was nothing really serious going on. He was just trying to see his dad.

“He got Tasered multiple times. I feel anguished and angry - he was never a violent person; he was a gentle giant.

“You could understand if he had weapons or a baseball bat, but he had nothing like that at all.”

Dalian’s former teammates have paid tribute to the striker, especially those who played with him in the 1994 CocaCola Cup Final.

Mark Bosnich, who played in goal for Villa in the final, wrote on Twit-

ter: “RIP Dalian Atkinson, at his best one of the very best.”

Defender Paul McGrath, Villa’s finest player of the modern era, added: “Don’t feel to gud at the moment, Dalian Atkinson was a huge part of the Villa family I played with lovely kid and friend R.I.P pal Xx.” Winger Tony Daley, who was instrumental in the victory, added: “Devastating news...

RIP Dalian” Former England defender Ugo Ehiogu, who broke into the Villa team to play alongside Atkinson in the Nineties, described the striker as “a friend and mentor”.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: “When I first came to Aston Villa as a nervous 18-year old, Dalian took me under his wing.

“He was a mentor to me at the start of my career at Aston Villa.

Kind-hearted, always had a smile on his face, enjoyed life to the fullest, and would do things for anyone that he could.

“I was privileged to play with him at Aston Villa under Ron Atkinson - it was some real exciting times.”

Ex-midfielder Ian Taylor, now a Villa club ambassador, said: “Just heard news re my old team mate Dalian.

Deepest condolences to his family. Only spoke to him last week as well.

Sad sad news... #AVFC”.

Guardia Civil blast cave man to safety

AN injured cave-explorer was rescued

by Spain’s Guardia Civil after a three-day rescue operation, in which they used 50 controlled mini-detonations to blast a way through.

The police said the 37-year-old Frenchman was part of a group exploring the twisting cave in the northern province of Navarra last week when a rock fell on him, damaging his back and stomach.

Rescue specialists had to make the controlled mini-detonations at various points in the narrow cave so they could carry out the cave-explorer - known as a spelunker - on a stretcher from 650ft underground to the surface.

They said the rescue was completed safely, early on the Saturday morning. The spelunker was treated at the site and then taken to a hospital in France.

Alphabetical is a fast-paced quiz show, hosted by Jeff Stelling, which sees three contestants compete against a returning champion in series of games based around the alphabet. Over the course of four rounds the aim is to accrue as much time as possible in preparation for the final. However, two contestants will be eliminated leaving just the reigning champion and their challenger to go head-to- head in an effort to win the jackpot.

The tense Alphabetical final requires the remaining two contestants to make their way around the entire alphabet by answering a question based on each letter. They are racing against the clock with just 100 seconds, plus the time they have accrued. By successfully completing the alphabet the winner walks away with the jackpot. Or, if both contestants fail to achieve this, the jackpot remains unclaimed with the prize money accumulating with every day it rolls over.

In the fifth episode of Inside The Factory we see Gregg Wallace helping to unload a tanker full of sugar from Norfolk and follows it through one of the oldest sweet factories in Britain - Swizzels in Derbyshire - to see how over 500 workers, as well as some mind-boggling machines, transform it into over a hundred million individual sweets within just 24 hours.

He’ll discover how this factory that produces Lovehearts could be the most romantic place to work in the world and how the words on Lovehearts have evolved over the decades. Gregg will also find out how they make 5,000 Fizzers a minute using a tablet pressing machine that uses three tonnes of pressure to create each sweet, and he meets the man in charge of making three quarters of a million Fruity Pop lollies every day.

Meanwhile Cherry Healey is let inside the research and development department and experiences for herself how hard it is to come up with a new product - plus she researches how the country you’re from has an impact on the sweets you like. She also finds out how they put the letters in seaside rock and is given special access to the Fisherman’s Friend factory in Lancashire to discover how a local family turned a niche product into a worldwide success.

And historian Ruth Goodman investigates how sweets were first invented and discovers that, in the Middle Ages, they were used as a medicine and thought to reduce flatulence. She’ll also find out about the human cost of Britain’s sweet tooth in the 18th century and how an abolition movement instigated a sugar boycott which helped to end the slave trade.

Seven ordinary people - from a dance teacher to a phlebotomist - are about to make a life changing decision. They’re becoming Police Officers. With exclusive access to Surrey Police, the Rookies and their families, this series reveals what it is like to be dropped on to the front line of law enforcement without a lot of experience and the impact on the Rookies loved ones.

Filmed over the ‘breaking-in period’ - when the Rookies leave the safety of training school and start working on the fast response cars - this programme documents the toughest and most emotional part of the training process. As the new recruits venture out onto the streets under the watchful eye of an experienced veteran Officer, it is a baptism of fire. They come face to face with violent criminals and learn to deal with abusive members of the public who do not respect the Police.

In this first episode we meet the trainees, including 29-year-old Tyne, who has made a radical career move from dance instructor to trainee Police Officer. Tyne decided to follow her dreams of joining the police after witnessing her sister’s own career ambitions be frustrated by a rare degenerative illness.

19-year-old Angus, one of Surrey’s youngest ever Rookies, is leaving a close family home in rural Somerset where he worked in a call centre, to take on a career which will push him to his very limits. Whilst his school friends back home are still living for the weekend, Angus will have to grow up fast if he is to cope with a job that demands he makes life and death decisions.

Shaven-headed, six foot three, nineteen Stone gym addict Antony might look like the archetypal copper, but contrary to first impressions he’s a deep thinking idealist. Antony resolved to make it in the Police so that he can help vulnerable victims of crime

One in five working adults in the UK are officially classed as low paid, and nearly half the British workforce earns less than £20k a year.

With new Prime Minister Theresa May pledging to focus on “rewarding hard-working people with higher wages”, this programme explores the question ‘Can Britain have a pay rise?’

James O’Brien and Stephanie McGovern host a studio debate with a 100 people from around the country who represent different pay levels and jobs, from care workers to business owners.

The studio audience answer four big questions: do we work hard enough? Do our bosses get paid too much? Will the national living wage mean pay increases? Will Brexit lead to a pay rise for Britain?

Stephanie investigates how British productivity, worker hours and company policies compare to other countries around the world. She meets two company owners from Manchester with differing views on the living wage, and lastly she speaks to different experts with varying views on whether Brexit will be good for wages.

The Watchman Channel 4, 21:00 Acclaimed actor and Hollywood star Stephen Graham takes centre stage in a brand new Channel 4 drama written and directed by multi-award-winning director Dave Nath. Nath, who has previously won acclaim for his direction of major documentaries tackling challenging subjects through unprecedented access, such as Bedlam and The Murder Detectives, turns his hand to fiction in this new project. We are back at Salford City FC for the 2015-16 season, following the fortunes of the ex-Manchester United stars known as the Class of ’92 in their new roles as football club owners.

We last saw Ryan Giggs, Phil and Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt celebrating on the pitch at Moor Lane as Salford City were crowned champions of First Division North. But it soon becomes clear that life in the new League is not going to be the same fairytale story as last season.

With the famous owners busy with their other football commitments, a struggle to sign new players and their star striker preparing for retirement, the club need to dig deep to put the performance on the pitch that the fans now expect.

Joint managers Bernard and Jonno, as well as preparing for Bernard’s wedding, guide the team through a thrilling FA Cup run, but the bubble soon bursts. A visit from arch-rivals Darlington puts the team under great pressure and tempers flare again. Can Salford turn their fortunes around and find their winning form again?

Professor Noel Fitzpatrick is faced with two difficult cases that push his skills to the limit. One-year-old cat Peanut was born with deformed front legs and struggles to walk.

His owner Denise is desperate for him to be able to run free and hopes Noel will be able to fit him with two new bionic feet. Noel is the only vet in the world to offer animals prosthetic limbs with a PerFiTS implant designed so that the bone and skin can grow into the metal, which becomes part of the skeleton. If he succeeds with Peanut, it’s believed this will be the first ever animal in the world with such double front limb prostheses. But the treatment has risks, and recovery takes patience. Rachelle and John were devastated when their massive 76kg Irish Wolfhound, Ard Ri, was diagnosed with bone cancer in his leg.

Going Gaga over new Star is Born

POP singer Lady Gaga will appear in her first major film lead role in a remake of the classic Hollywood drama A Star is Born.

She is starring alongside Bradley Cooper, who will also be making his debut as a director.

Previous versions of the story starred Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand, and Lady Gaga will compose and perform new songs in the film, which tells of an aspiring starlet’s relationship with a leading man, whose star is on the wane.

Lady Gaga, who was nominated for an Oscar for song Til It Happens To You, has previously starred in films including Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Earlier this year, the 30-year-old won a Golden Globe for her work in the latest season of the US anthology series American Horror Story.

Writing on Twitter, Gaga - real name Stefani Germanotta – wrote on Twitter that she was “elated” to be working

Victor Meldrew actor suffers a heart attack

RICHARD Wilson, TV’s One Foot In The Grave star, is in a stable condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack last Wednesday.

The 80-year-old Scottish actor has cancelled his 12-night Edinburgh Festival Fringe show, in which he was to revive the curmudgeonly character he played in the BBC sitcom.

The one-man show was billed, I Don’t Believe It! An Evening With Victor Meldrew, which should have started on Tuesday.

The show’s promot-

ers said in a statement: “Due to ill health, Richard Wilson has taken the decision to take some time out.”

The dour, Greenockborn Scot, who also appeared in Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em and Doctor Who, played Meldrew for six series between 1990 and 2000, twice winning Best Light Entertainment Performance at the TV Baftas.

The world-weary pensioner, who was killed off in the final episode, also appeared in Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, Doctor Who and BBC fantasy drama Merlin.

KENNY Baker, the 3ft 8in British actor who played robot R2-D2 in the Star Wars film franchise, has died aged 81 after a long illness.

Kenny, who appeared in the first six Star War films, had been cared for by nephew Drew Myerscough, who found him on Saturday morning He told Sky News: “It was a love and affection that he got from Star Wars fans that kept him going, without any doubt.

“He loved meeting them; he loved receiving letters from them.

He was amazed that, even after 30-odd years, the fans still basically adored him.”

Drew added: “He never let his size become an issue … he lived the life of a sixfoot man!” Yet Kenny, born in 1934, was told by doctors that he was unlikely to live through puberty!

Kenny first played the robot character in Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977.

His niece, Abigail Shield, said: “He felt very blessed. He obviously enjoyed the time working at Star Wars.

It gave him a whole new, different view on his disability and it

was taken as a positive thing.”

She added: “Unfortunately, he was too ill to be part of the new Star Wars films. He was due to fly out to LA (for the most recent premiere) but doctors told him he was too unwell to fly.”

Actor Ewan McGregor, who appeared in three of the Star Wars films, paid tribute on Twitter, writing: “So sorry to hear about this. It was lovely working with Kenny.”

And 20th Century Fox, who posted a photograph of C3PO standing next to Kenny’s Star Wars character, wrote: “Rest in peace, Kenny Baker, the heart and soul of R2D2.”

Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy, tweeted: “Goodbye #KennyBaker A lifelong loyal friend - I loved his optimism & determination He WAS the droid I was looking for!”

Baker continued in the role for the franchise’s next five films, and also starred in Time Bandits, Labyrinth and Flash Gordon.

As well as playing the resourceful droid he was best known for, Baker also played an Ewok in the Star Wars films.

By Vanessa Vee AT the mention of the word Madeira, It’s typical of me to think of cake and wine! But, having being fortunate to visit this stunning Portuguese island twice, I’d love to give you a brief insight into what is known as the Garden Island.

Here in Tenerife, we are lucky to have direct flights to Madeira, which is a far from being another Ibiza. It attracts a much more mature clientèle ... and raving is limited to enthusing about the island’s dramatic scenery and botanical wonders!

Madeirans know this, of course, and over the years they have enhanced their quality of life by producing fine food and wine.

Helpfully, they have also provided access to their picturesque countryside by building

more than 1,000 miles of irrigation channels, accompanied by footpaths that snake through the striking landscapes.

Discover Madeira and find yourselves strolling through a sun-dappled mimosa forest, between renowned botanical gardens, and looking forward to an al fresco lunch on the terrace of a hillside tea room enroute.

There is a variety of walks with no perils, as many have, and the Levada dos Tornos between the Palheiro and Funchal municipal botanical gardens - is a gentle introduction to them.

Most of the island is a botanical site of volcanic soil in which just about anything grows.

Palheiro, in the hills above Funchal, has an outstanding collection of greenery, but the most impressive specimen is a towering Norfolk Island pine from New Zealand.

The beauty of the levadas is that they are fairly level, quiet water-

channels in rural areas, where noise is limited to birdsong, an occasional barking dog and tolling of distant church bells.

The island is renowned for wine-production, and areas of Madeira present a patchwork of precipitous, terraced vineyards that appear to defy logic and gravity. There is not enough level land here to park a harvesting machine, much less use one.

Most visitors are content to wander around the capital, Funchal, and nearby villages.

This leaves much of the island largely untouched by mass tourism; thus, preserving its rural charm.

The volcanic heart of Madeira, reached on a helter-skelter road winding up above the clouds, is a geological nightmare of splintered rock.

The road ends at the summit of Pico do Arieiro, the third-highest peak, where a snack bar offers panoramic views of solidified lava and

ash, which are a vision of the dawn of time.

Visit Funchal’s 17thcentury warehouses, where astonishing wines can be sampled around oak barrel tables.

Whether you are looking for a wine to commemorate the building of the Eiffel Tower in 1890, or perhaps to commiserate with the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, all are available, at prices deemed reasonable by true wine connoisseurs.

Our final excursion has to be to the infamous baskets of Madeira.

Catch the Cable Car for a 15-minute ride up. It’s an exciting way to see the fantastic views over Funchal, though somewhat breathtaking and most certainly not for the faint-hearted. The departure station is at the Parque Almirante Reis, in the old part of the town.

Once at the Monte, visit the Tropical Palace Gardens, which is about 550 metres above Funchal. This will take 2-3 hours of your time, enjoying the great views

over Funchal. Sculpture and artwork are found in the museum within the gardens, which offer a big variety of tropical plants, from all over the world.

After your visit, you might like to take the famous Toboggan Run down.

We always joke about this because I was pregnant at the time of our visit, and my husband wanted to check that I was okay with doing this, to which I answered: “Of course I am - I´m pregnant, not an invalid! It’s not as though they are going to push us down a road, is it?”

Umm, yes, that’s exactly what they did! But once you´re on, there is no getting off, cars or no cars.

This form of transport has been around since 1850 and was a fast means of travel down to Funchal for all the wealthy aristocrats who lived in the Monte.

Their sole purpose today is to cater for the thousands of tour-

ists it attracts every year. These two-seater wicker baskets glide on wooden runners, pushed and steered by two men, traditionally dressed in white cotton clothes and a straw hat, using their rubber-soled boots as brakes. A bit of a hair-raising experience, but I am so glad I have done it.

On a final note, did you know that Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Funchal in 1985?

CAR drivers are obviously “in charge” while their vehicles are moving, but there are various things they and passengers are either prohibited to do, or are recommended they should or shouldn’t be done.

Let’s look at various points. Firstly, though you still see many drivers using mobile phones or listening to music on headphones, but both are strictly prohibited.

Both must surely distract the driver, which means there is a much higher risk of an accident occurring. Fines and sanctions can now

be imposed, and the Guardia Civil Traffic Police take a dim view of those flaunting the law.

It means that if you are caught, they probably won’t stop at giving you a fine … they are quite likely to go

through the car and its papers, and those of the driver, with a fine tooth-comb.

Some drivers may feel the officers are being petty, but they are legally obliged to make the roads as safe as

possible for all road users. That’s why they use such opportunities to drive the message home.

Secondly, there is often a lot of chatter going on when we carry passengers, and while no one

says we should travel in silence, we must be mindful of the driver’s concentration.

For example, if someone tells a funny joke and the passengers erupt with laughter, the driver is likely to join in and a momentary loss of concentration can lead to fatal consequences.

Thirdly, children, toddlers and pets also cause driver distractions, which cannot always been controlled, but you must ensure that any child is travelling in the appropriate seat or booster for their age/height, and that they are securely strapped in.

Animals must also be strapped in the rear of the car securely, not only for the driver’s safety but also for theirs because they could be thrown forward towards the windscreen in the event of a severe crash or impact.

With the high temperatures here in the Canary Islands, we should make sure our cars are kept as cool possible inside before we use them.

If you have a garage or

garage space,you must use it. If not, try to park in a shady area - under a tree, perhaps - and use a sun-shield when leaving the car to help keep the interior cooler.

Also, it is always advisable to wear loosefitting clothing for comfort when driving, and wear appropriate footwear.

After all, your feet and eyes are the main parts of the body employed when driving. Wearing good sunglasses (those recommended for driving) is also recommended highly.

You should always make sure you stay hydrated because dehydration can lead to fatigue, which, in turn, could cause an accident.

If you feel you are becoming overheated, stop as soon as possible and drink some cool water to rehydrate yourself – and don’t forget your passengers!

Particular care should be taken when travelling with infants, small children and old people, for whom the excess heat can be worse.

The theme is sleek chic - no volume - but not ironed flat either because bounce is what we want to see.

This cut can also be curled to ring the changes, but keep the cut as one length as

possible to create heaviness and weight.

Your hair, if precisioncut, will just fall back into place once styled.

It really is a no-fuss haircut to give you easy styling.

Keep colouring as one block colour because this will add to the “thickness” of your hair and keep it sleek and shiny.

Avoid any colouring that will dry out your hair as the look is healthy, mirror-shine hair.

Great colours for this type of cut are chocolate browns, plums, deep reds and icy or baby blondes.

These will give you optimum shine and 100% dramatic finish to your “peek-a-boo” fringe.

YOU heard it here at the beginning of the year: the bang-on trend for this season’s hottest look for guys is Military.

From camouflage in all shades, mixed in with olives, browns and beiges, going to war has never been so fashionable.

You don’t have to go

the whole hog, either.

Blend in your newest camouflage with regular clothing to spruce up your look.

Don’t overdo it, either, as seen in my gym (double camouflage), because you don’t want to look like a film extra.

Keep it looking classy by tying together earthy colours … brighter colours rarely work with the army look.

For the Autumn, casual boots blend well with trousers, or shorts can

be worn with earthycoloured trainers. Just keep the colours on a theme.

You can use camouflage in your Tee-shirt to jacket, baseball cap to belt. Just adding in this season’s must-have pattern will bring you right on-trend.

Camouflage rarely goes out of fashion, but this time the stores have gone full-on warthemed.

Cancer victims can still offer eyes for transplant

By Val Sainsbury HUNDREDS of people in the UK have received organ transplants from donors with a history of cancer, despite many believing this is impossible if they’ve had the disease.

A total of 272 organ donors across the UK in the past five years have been cancer victims, according to data obtained by the Press Association. And their donations resulted in 675 people receiving a transplant.

Eye donation is one key area in which such donors have been able to help. The figures from NHS Blood and Transplant also showed that 1,033 people, who had suffered from some types of cancer, went on to donate their eyes - but not other organs.

Officials say there is a “common misconception” that people cannot be organ donors if they have had cancer.

That’s because there are some circumstances where it is possible.

The Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs has said: “Risks of cancer transmission must be balanced against the risks of dying without transplantation.

Organs from deceased donors with some cancers may be safely used

for transplantation.”

Actually, the risk of donor-transmitted cancer in the UK is currently assessed as 0.06%.

Professor John Forsythe, associate medical director for organ donation and transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said people should not let a health condition, or previous illness, stop them from registering as a donor.

“We are very keen that everyone, regardless of his/her health status, registers a decision to donate - and tells their family they want to donate,” he added.

“We work hard to minimise the risks to

recipients by carefully evaluating all potential organ and tissue donors.”

Around 70 cornea donations a week are needed to meet the demand for sight-saving transplants. But, sadly, one in 10 people on the NHS Organ Donor Register do not want to donate their eyes.

Aspiring midwife Alison Cooney died in 2010 aged 28, just six weeks after she was diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer.

Her mother, Ann Cooney, from Alkrington, Greater Manchester, agreed to the donation of her corneas, which helped save the sight of two people.

“Her major organs could not be donated, because of the aggressive nature of her illness, but her eyes could be used,” she said proudly.

“Apparently, not many people donate their eyes, although it is one of the most successful procedures.

“Even though, initially, it was very difficult to accept what was about to happen, it wasn’t about us, and we focused on something good being achieved from something bad.”

Kids’ unforgettable day Accion del Sol news By n332.es THE road-safety project by N332 reached an agreement with Hollywood Motor Show to enable kids from Elche Children´s Home to enjoy a fun day.

The stunt drivers, performing in Elche, Alicante, didn’t hesitate to help when we explained where the tickets would go. The show’s three stars, David, Patrick and Christopher, donated the tickets so the children were able to experience this amazing event.

Francisco Morales, from N332, said: “We

must think of the children during this holiday time when those with families are enjoying their time together.

“Many of those without a family don´t have the same opportunities, and don´t even get to leave their home.”

As well as sharing news and information to encourage safer driving and, hopefully, save lives, N332 will keep working to help local charities, and, with the recent launch of the new eMagazine, will be donating some of the benefits earned to local charities.

Feeling cock-a-hoop A COCKER spaniel, who was collected from the streets in Candelaria three months ago, arrived at the refuge in a bad state, with no fewer than nine tumours inside her.

But that was then!

These were successfully removed, she is well on the road to recovery, and, to complete her fairy tale, she has been adopted by a lovely couple who have previously adopted a dog from the refuge. She will have a wonderful new life with them, and we are grateful for their help and support.

Wash and walk Please remember tomorrow (Saturday), from 1pm, we are holding another wash-andwalk day. We hope to have every dog in the refuge pampered for the afternoon, so if you would like to help us, come along to the refuge and make a dog or two very happy. It was great fun for all last time, and will almost certainly be again!

Champs given fright WE are now five games into the new season of the Direct Telecom pool league, and the first real upset almost occurred as reigning champs Gaffers A locked horns with Gaffers B. It was a tense affair over the first six frames, with the B team playing some excellent pool to share the spoils.

Then, the B team suddenly found another gear. Wilson and Tyrone, with two on the bounce, put them 6-3 up to earn the Bs an unlikely point, with a huge upset beckoning.

However, Gaffers A dug deep with Kev, Top Smirnoff Dave and Lee winning their games to scrape a draw. But the result gives hope to the chasing pack.

Somebody has obviously put something into the Los Abrigos water supply because Phoenix Potters’ fine early-season form has continued, keeping them second in the table.

This week they visited Bluebell A and wasted no time picking up early frames. The Los Cristianos boys fought back and won a couple themselves, but it just wasn’t enough as the old boys pushed on and finished the match with a decent victory margin.

Palms A, who have also made a decent start, travelled to Amarilla Golf to tackle Terrace Bantams. But the home team, playing decent pool, were still matched by Palms A. It was a tense affair, with neither team wanting to concede ground, and there was nothing to separate the two teams after eight frames.

But Bantams suddenly remembered how they normally play and reverted to their usually-poor shot selection.

It was the chance

Palms were awaiting, and they gained the advantage,winning the last five frames for a comfortable -looking 8-4 win - on paper, at least.

Another team making a superb start is Rewind Rewired, who have taken to life in the top division like ducks to water. They faced a tricky fixture at Palms Elite and soon went a frame down when Graeme beat Garry.

But this spurred on the visitors, who won four frames in quick succession to stun the home side.

Palms Elite fought back with Dan taking a frame from Victor, but Tim and Gary then won the frames to ensure the Rewired boys a draw. Palms Elite came out on top 3-1 in the final session, but Victor gained revenge on Dan, and that frame secured the points for Rewired, who are now fourth in the standings.

Tenerife Hammers A, just one place behind Rewired in fifth place, are hoping to reclaim the title this season.

But they have not had the best starts and look as though they’ll be without key player Paul for a few weeks.

He is recovering from a hospital stay we wish him well.

Hammers A travelled to Chayofa for what is always a close game against Treehouse A. Again, there were close games and, after session one, the scores were level. Hammers came out stronger in the next four with Del, Paul and then Wez winning to put them 5-3 up.

This spurred on Treehouse, with Scott and Paul levelling at 5-5.

Del then beat Jay, and Hammers were back in front. It left Mark to try to salvage a point against Barry which he did. Honours even!

Down in Puerto Colon, two teams were looking for their first victories as Rewind A played Terrace Roosters. The visitors had an excellent first session and led 3-1, but Rewind turned it around to level at 4-4 with the final session to come.

Michael, one half of Rewind’s French Connection, took first blood for the home team to put them ahead, but the Roosters sensed that it was their night, even though Cecilia beat Mark!

Finn and Mario restored the lead, leaving Andy against Greer in the last frame. Greer had been on form all night, and, when he rolled in the black, it was his third win of the night - and the Roosters first win of the season!

Dreamers A, looking to keep their momentum up, had a tricky fixture in Silencio against Exiles A. But

the visitors were in good form, mopping up the early frames, and, try as they might, Exiles just could not gain a foot-hold.

In fact, they will have been pleased to win a couple of frames to avoid being whitewashed by a Dreamers team who seem to have found some form.

In Division Two, early front-runners Picasso’s A really fancy themselves for promotion this time around.

They are unbeaten so far, and were looking to extend that run at home against Treehouse B. They quickly found their groove and moved into a 3-1 lead.

The visitors hit back, with Shaun taking a frame from Mark, but Picasso’s then moved up a gear and won the next four frames and the points. Fran and her team are looking really good.

Hot on Picasso’s heels are James Hammers C. who look as

though they have finally adapted to life in the second tier.

They were also on their travels, to Valle San Lorenzo to take on The Crown, who, after coming so close to promotion last season, were one of the favourites this time.

It was a close, intense match with some tight games, and it was always going to take something special to separate the two teams. That came in the form of Ken H, who won his three frames to ensure that Hammers squeezed over the finish line for a win and the points.

Another tight game was played out at the Splash bar between themselves and Hoppys. The home team made the early running to move into a 3-1 lead, but the second session was shared, so Splash had a 5-3 margin.

But Kev beat Clive for his second successive frame, and it was game-on at 5-4.

Martin and Steve had other ideas, though, winning their games to provide a victory for Splash as they look to get their season going.

the promotion mix come the end of the season, added another three points to their tally with victory over Treehouse B. The home side shot into a 4-0 lead, but in session two, complacency crept in as Treehouse fought back, taking three frames to give themselves a chance. However, this was the wake-up call Yates Bar needed.

And they repeated their opening frames, taking the final four frames for a solid success, thanks to Lee, who won his three games.

In the night’s final clash, Palms Rebels entertained Bluebell B, who are another unbeaten side. With a season’s experience behind them, the visitors took an early lead, although the games were close.

Palms Rebels fought hard, but Bluebell seemed to have an answer to everything thrown at them, and they took vital blacks when needed.

It was a tough contest, and the scoreline may not have reflected the games, but Bluebell B came out on top.

It was a cagey opening weekend in the Premier League with plenty of

draws, and one or two early-season shock results.

The point-scoring team of the week reflected this, with Liverpool, Man Utd, Swansea and West Brom all contributing two players and the rest coming from West Ham, Watford and Middlesbrough. Highest-scoring player of the week was Philippe Coutinho, with 15 points.

Moussa Dembele remains suspended. Crystal Palace are hoping new signing James Tomkins is back, but James McArthur, Bakary Sako, Fraizer Campbell, Jonny Williams, and Pape Souare are all doubtful.

They must also do without the recently-departed Yannick Bolasie.
