THE Olympic Games are over for another four years, but the golden glow from the Rio Olympiad continues to shine in the south of Tenerife at La Caleta, where the Tenerife Top Training facility (TTT) has been home to some of the world’s top sports teams and athletes for a few years.

They came, they conquered Continued from Front Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton are just a few of the many Premier League football teams to have trained at TTT. But the performance by a plethora of Olympians will take TTT to a new level. An amazing 19 medallists from Rio 2016 did their preparations at Tenerife Top Training for a medal haul which surpassed all expectations.

All the medals were achieved in swimming, with the honourable exception of the triathlon gold, won comfortably

by Alistair Brownlee, whose his brother Jonathan picked up the silver.

Team GB star Alistair, like so many, took full advantage of all the La Caleta facilities. And the 19-medal Olympic haul comprised six They were cheered on all the way by the TTT staff, and Canarian Weekly caught up with manager Gregor Zielhardt this week.

CW: TTT must be so proud of the achievements of the Olympians who have used the facilities. What sets TTT apart from other training facilities?

RB: Yes, we are really proud of all the results of the Olympians who used Tenerife Top Training for their preparation. I think one of our key success factors is that the athletes remain focussed. We give the highest attention them and their training schedules, and try to give them the best possible support.

Not only during the training sessions, but also between sessions and during their whole stay on the Island, we are doing everything to make it as comfortable as possible for the athletes. We want them to feel good, so they have worries and can concentrate fully on their training.

CW: What did it feel like watching the Olympians who had been at TTT? RB: We were all very excited. We shared the entire thrill of all the Olympians here, and we were so happy with them for their achievements. It was a really nice feeling because you know them and you know what their goals are. And on a personal level, you really want them to achieve these goals. And many of them did.

CW: How will this boost TTT because, surely, there will now be other athletes and sports looking to use your set-up?

RB: We could certainly increase our awareness. The extraordinarily good results at the Olympic Games are good marketing for us. But we cannot say exactly how far it will boot us up. We are looking forward to the future and all the athletes who will use our facilities - and also to all the Olympians who will return to Tenerife to train with us again.

CW: What does this success do for Tenerife?

RB: Well, the awareness level of the island has increased, especially on an international level. This might boost the demand in the tourism industry, mainly in the sports sector. And in the end, the local economy can benefit from the success of all the Olympians who have trained on our Island.

CW: What was your Olympic highlight?

RB: For me, the whole Olympic Games were a highlight as such. But if I had to choose one moment, it was the double world-record of Adam Peaty. He set a world record in the preliminary round, and then beat his own world record again in the final. This a real textbook example of an Olympic champion.

She also took silver in the 200m freestyle and bronze in the 100m freestyle. British 21-year-old swimmer Adam Peaty is now a household name.

He twice broke the world record en-route to winning gold in the 100m breaststroke, and also added the silver in the 4 x 100m medley relay.

Kazakhstan swimmer Dmitriy Balandin reached the winner’s podium in the 200m breaststroke, while Spaniard Mireia Belmonte clinched gold in the 200m butterfly. Spain’s sweetheart also picked up a bronze in 400m individual medley.

Yuliya Yefimova, from Russia, won two silver medals, one in 100m and another in the 200m breaststroke.

Frenchman Florent Manaudou, in the 50m freestyle, and Belgian Pieter Timmers,

100m freestyle, left Rio with silver medals.

The French 4 x 100m freestyle, and the British 4 x 100m medley teams, also won silver. The Russian squad spent a long time in La Caleta, and they were rewarded as Anton Chupkov (100m breaststroke) and Evgeny Rylov (200m breaststroke) returned home with bronze medals.

Outside of the Olympic pools, the 10km openwater swimmers also performed well. Sharon van Rouwendaal, from the Netherlands, (pictured left) secured gold and compatriot Ferry Weertman the bronze.

Italian Rachele Bruni took another bronze to make it a magical haul for the TTT trainers.

Tenerife Top Training has been a real jewel in the crown for the Island over the last few years. The last few weeks have shown the calibre of athlete Tenerife can attract.

And, combined with the higher standard of hotels, restaurants and infrastructure, it shows the real progress we are making.

Top Guns get plane ugrade THE Spanish Government has allocated 97 million euros to modernising the aircraft and helicopter fleet of its Air Force. And it has also signed three agreements and contracts to maintain the machines.

Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, the Government’s acting VicePresident, was in charge of signing off the order.

The first agreement relates to maintaining the T-22 (Airbus 310) fleet in service for Group 45 of the Air Force, for an estimated 30m euros.

De Santamaría said the missions assigned to this type of aircraft included the transportation of State officials, passengers and medical air evacuations.

It also transports troops deployed on international missions and handles NEO operations (non-combatant evacuation operations) and the repatriation of the deceased.

The aim of the second agreement is to maintain the TM-11 (Falcon 20), T-18 (Falcon 900),

T-20 (Cessna Citation V) aircraft, for around 35m euros.

The missions of these aircraft include electronic warfare and electronic, counter-measure operations, the transfer of State officials, pas-

sengers and medical air evacuations, as well as aerial photographs and the in-flight calibration of radio navigation aid systems.

The two agreements run for four years, from 2016-2020, dis-

tributed in five annual payments.

The third agreement is designed to maintain the various aviation engines for Air Force helicopters at a cost of some 32m euros.

The Government

Vice-President specified that this maintenance basically consisted of work to revise and repair engines, components and accessories to restore their useful life, as well as making neces-

sary modifications to ensure that their configuration is kept upto-date.

The agreement will last an estimated two years, which could be extended for a further two years.

Islands’ export slump THE Canaries have been one of the few exceptions to Spanish export growth registered during the first half of this year.

Spain’s overseas’ sales reached a record figure in this period, but in the Islands, though,,

they fell by 20.3%, which was the steepest drop in the country.

The data, published by the Ministry of Economy, indicates that exports from Spain increased by 2.3% compared with the first half of 2015, while imports to the mainland recorded a slight decline of 0.5%.

Castilla-La Mancha leads the way with ex-

ports up 18.7%. And that increase shows the Spanish economy is heading in the right direction, although the Archipelago’s slump is worrying.

Its January-June decline in exports has been accompanied in the Canaries with a slight rise in imports - in the same proportion as the national average, 0.5% - which

affects a negative balance of payments by 555 million euros.

If the evolution of the first half continues in the July-December period, the Canarian economy will end the year with increased external dependence, producing a set of results even worse than those of last year.

stood at 550m euros after the Islands managed to raise its export figure by 2.9% and, as importantly, lower imports by 15.9%.

Canarian exports totalled 952.7m euros in the first half of this year, which was 0.7% of the country’s total exports. Imports accounted for 1.5bn, or 1.1% of the nationalfigure.

The Ministry report reveals that energy products have constituted the bulk of exports from the Canary Islands in this period, totalling 528.6m euros.

Food, beverages and tobacco are placed second, with 110m.

As for imports, food represents an expenditure of 397.3m euros, and 276.2m on energy products.

Job-seeking? The impossible dream SOME 4.5 million people are still jobless in Spain, according to the Active Population Survey (EPA) statistics for the second quarter of this year. And many are searching anxiously for work.

Yet companies say they can’t find candidates to fill their vacancies for three reasons: A lack of skills, experience and knowledge.

Ana Jimeno de la Casa, head of Repsol’s Selection, Performance and Development unit, said: “We are finding it hard to fill positions that require someone who is highly and recently qualified, who has an international profile, speaks a number of languages, and holds a degree in finance-economics or engineering.”

Meanwhile, the General Workers’ Union (UGT) points out that companies are asking for experience that people can’t possibly acquire because of the temporary nature of current contracts.

“We are finding it hard to fill positions that require someone highly and recently qualified, who has an international profile, various languages and a degree in finance or economy or engineering,” said a union spokesman.

A total of 56% of companies recognise there is

a gulf between the skills they are looking for and the suitability of applicants, according to the 2016 Guide to the Job Market, released by the employment consultancy Hays.

Consequently, they are casting their nets further afield.

“We need to hire people who will optimise resources and improve efficiency,” says a spokesperson from global energy operator, Acciona.

“We are attracting talent from the UK, America, Canada, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Australia.”

According to Mari Carmen Barrera, secretary for social policy, employment and social security at labour union UGT, the government is not doing enough to address the discrepancy between what companies need and what young Spaniards can offer them.

“The cuts have meant the loss of 3,000 labour counsellors, whose job it was to study the demands of the job market.

The cuts also meant jobtraining schemes being curbed.”

For the few vacancies existing in the under-26 age bracket, companies are looking for highlytrained and experienced employees.

Santiago Soler, from employment agency Adecco, points out that for those over the age of 45, the situation is equally dramatic because their age makes them eligible for just 4% of jobs.

The most employable age group is 26 to 35, which snaps up 61% of the jobs on offer.

But while Spain needs to renew its Education Plan, and academic institutions are being asked to adapt courses to meet company requirements, IESE Business School Professor Sandalio Gómez believes the companies themselves should provide training to suit their own needs.

“In Germany, companies assume this responsibility,” he says. “They sign a work contract with their students. That’s why they have only 8% youth unemployment, compared with Spain’s 46.5%.”

Spain’s unhealthy debts HEALTH regions in Spain are massively in debt - to the tune of a cool 6.6bn euros! And here, according to the Ministry of Finance, we owe 116.1m euros for the year to the end of May.

The latest report, released by department head Cristobal Montoro, shows that payment to suppliers and commercial debt of the autonomous communities accounts

for 70% of the total.

Of the healthcare’s 6.6bn debt, 13.36% originated in previous years, while a staggering 86.64% was contracted in 2016.

This was mainly through the state budget not being formalised because of the ongoing struggle to form a Spanish Government.

Total health debt in May is higher than last year, when it amounted to 5.863bn euros.

In fact, there are communities where the increase is significant, such as Castilla y Leon, which has grown from

87.2m in May 2015 to 489.1m in the same month this year, or Murcia (from 261.8m to 434.9m).

Valencia is the most indebted (nearly 1,385m euros), followed by Cataluña (1,243.5m), Madrid (859.9m), Andalusia (755,800,000m), Castilla y Leon (489.1m) Murcia (434.9m), Aragon (281.5m) and Galicia (24m).

On the contrary, the ones owing least are Navarra (19.7m euros), La Rioja (24.3m), Cantabria (62.9m), Asturias (64.5m) and the Basque Country (81.2m).

“Right now, six out of 10 jobs last less than a week, so it’s impossible to accumulate three years’ experience.”

To reach a solution, Infoempleo Director General Jorge Guelbenzu says: “Companies should develop promotion policies and recycle the skills of employees over the age of 45 without worrying about whether they will go off in search of new challenges.

“The younger generation needs to be able to multi-task, and there should be a lot of focus on digital and technical training.”

South Hospital is such a big plus for patients

THE human and everyday factor of the recentlyopened South Hospital is there for all to see as it expands its facilities.

The opening of the first 49 hospital beds for acute, short-stay patients, along with the intensive-care activity, has relieved some of the burden on the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria.

It has also eased the burden on patients having to travel to Santa Cruz for treatment.

South Hospital has expanded its range of medical specialities and diagnostic functional tests and has, thus, enhanced the number of consultations.

This has seen a sharp decline in the number of patients using the Island’s main centre in the capital of Tenerife.

Official figures released this week show that from April 2015 to April 2016, the South Hospital has had more than 157,000 physician visits and conducted 27,000 test and procedures.

In the Day Hospital, there have been 1,801 treatments for patients who would normally have had to travel to Santa Cruz.

According to the Ministry of Health, patients in the South received 82,484 physiotherapy sessions. And there have been impressive numbers in those using the facilities for specialised medical care in the field of Mental Health, with almost 23,000 consultations.

Where is our dosh?

WHERE is the rest of our money? That’s what local politicians want to know because the Canaries appear to have missed out on 2.3bn euros from the regional financing system since the 2009 reforms.

That’s the findings of the Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) in their calculations of the Competitiveness Fund.

And, according to Canarian Government figures, the Archipelago has become the country’s worst-funded autonomous community, receiving between 400 and 500 million euros less than they should get, according to executive committee estimates.

For example, data from the financing of the communities in 2014, analysed by the Foundation of Applied Economic Studies (Fedea), reveal that the Canaries lost out on 411 million euros that year.

And all because the Treasury Ministry takes into account the Competitiveness Fund, aimed at compensating regions with funding.

The REF believes that the competitive rating we receive is not correct. The distance the islands are from the mainland and the rest of the EU, along with travel infrastructure problems, should weigh more in our favour.

The Canary Executive argues that the REF shows that the calculation represents 494 million euros less than in 2010, 513 in 2011, 473 in 2012 and 412 in 2013.

But the Canaries Government is awaiting the formation of a new national government in Spain before it launches an appeal.

Canary Islands are so friendly TURISMO de Canarias has had a fine few years selling the Islands overseas. And this summer, officials have been busy working on a different market in Europe.

They have been holding promotional events and street awareness at the Berlin Pride show, selling the Canaries as a friendly place for the LGBT community (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexuals) to enjoy.

Their campaign al-

ready has had over five million hits on social media, and they have directly targeted about two million potential customers.

More than 750,000 people attended the Gay Pride Day in the German capital, where the Islands had prominent advertising campaigns.

Mariate Lorenzo, the Canarian Government’s Tourism Minister, says the aim is to “consolidate the Archipelago as a tourist resort for the LGTB public, at one of the biggest events for this segment to be held outside of Spain”.

Bank blames Brexit on a weak economy But it will be short-term only, predicts BBVA financial experts BRITAIN’S decision to leave the European Union will cause serious damage to Spain’s ailing economy, according to one of the country’s leading banks.

Spanish bank BBVA believes Brexit will affect the country’s economy. The top lender is sure Brexit will shave 40% of growth off the embattled EU country’s economic performance, but says impact will be shortterm only.

The dire prediction will raise further fears about the health of Spain’s ailing finances, which have taken a battering in recent years.

Youth unemployment has rocketed in the impoverished country, whose economy has been trashed by membership of the disastrous, single-currency project.

Now the BBVA experts have added to the sense of woe by stating that the fallout from the Brexit vote has “increased the vulnerability of the

Spanish economy”.

The bank slashed its growth forecasts for 2017 by 0.4% as a result, to just 2.3%, but it did also post betterthan-expected GDP estimates for this year.

It also predicted that Spain’s desperatelydepressed jobs market might finally start to recover after years in the doldrums, with some 800,000 new posts

expected to be created in 2017.

The news will provide some comfort for the embattled EU, which is under growing pressure to end its ruinous, austerity drive, which has enforced poverty on Mediterranean states.

Spain is part of a new alliance of southern European countries including Italy, Greece and France, which are

pushing to usurp Germany as the main influencer of fiscal policy in Brussels.

The nations, which have all seen sluggish growth and rising unemployment, want an end to spending cuts, and for the European Central Bank (ECB) to pump more money into the system to stimulate growth.

But Angela Merkel’s Germany, which is fis-

cally conservative, is unlikely to give up its position as Europe’s top economic dog without a fight.

Berlin has benefited greatly from the current Euro regime, with the country’s all-important exports market being aided hugely by the relatively weak value of the single currency, compared with Germany’s booming economy.

Public universities face a retirement ‘stampede’

A Blues experience HAVE you noticed that everyone is a critic these days? Trip Advisor, online forums, Twitter ... you cannot move for everyone spouting personal views.

To quote my former boss Frank Warren: “Opinions are like ar*eholes.

Everyone’s got one.”

In the modern world, there are so many ways to vent your anger. Or ‘FURY’, as the Daily Mail puts it.

But there is a world of difference in being critical and being furious.

For example, there is no movie franchise called the Fast & The Critical.

If you really want to see the difference, go on to Twitter at the start of a popular, or new, TV show being aired. The X Factor this weekend would be perfect. There will be millions of people venting and being negative.

It’s much easier than actually suggesting what can be done to make something better.

Or offering some good advice.

I thought of this last weekend after the Blues Brothers Band gig in Las Americas. There were so many things wrong with it, that if I were to list them, it

would read like the ramblings of someone who was furious.

And I’m not.

So since you weren’t there - I don’t think there were more than 200 people in attendance - believe me when I say it was a real shame.

It could and should have been a proper event. But I’ve a feeling it has also put the Legends series to an end.

It’s not cheap to put on events here. Geography, and all the associated costs, are everything. But once you commit, you still have to put on a show.

Finally this week, we all know how hard it is to find a parking space in town. I’m sure the spaces in the “paying” car parks are getting smaller as well, unless my car has put on weight!

No matter how desperate you are for a space, I’m not sure how you would get into this beauty!

THERE could be a teaching crisis at our two public universities, according to the Diagnostic Canario University System, which says the Canaries is facing a major challenge with long-term staffing issues.

Its report says that an ageing teaching workforce will lead to 50% of its workforce retiring in the coming years, and that could mean replacing more than 2,000 workers by 2030.

Older key staff at the two centres is a real problem for the University of La Laguna (ULL). By 2020, there will be 100 retirements of the Teaching and Research Staff (PDI) and 67 from Administration and Services (PAS).

Also, in 2021, 200 teachers will be aged between 65-70 years, as well as 149 members of PAS who will reach 6065 years by that year.

mately 1,000 members of staff - an average of 100 jobs every year.”

The University of Las Palmas (ULPGC) has a younger staff than La Laguna, but even it must undertake a major restructuring over the next 15 years.

According to a ULPGC report, 1,044 members of its workforce (884 teachers and 160 non-teaching) will retire between 2016 and 2030.

“This process will also take place at such a pace that every five years, there will retirements: 152 members

of staff (135 PDI and 17 PAS) between 2014 and 2010, another 338 (299 and 39) will do so between 2021 and 2025 and, finally, 554 (450 and 104) will be added to the ‘stampede’ between 2026 and 2030.

“In other words,” says the ULPGC report, “the human resources planning of this university will have to deal with a scenario in which, in 15 years, there will be around 60% of the current staff of teachers, and 20% of its administrative staff and services all retired.”

Canarian workers toil longest of all - almost!

WORKERS in the Canary Islands spend longer hours at their jobs than almost the rest of Spain’s employed, according to a new study by recruitment agency Randstad.

It shows that during the first quarter of 2016, they worked on average 394 hours, which was

tire before the age of 70 by 2020, there will be real problems, and, with the current template, this only gets worse from the following year,” says the report.

The real challenge for ULL will come in the next decade, when, according to the University’s calculations, it will face “massive retirements”.

It adds: “Applying the accepted assumptions, between 2020 and 2030, we will have to retire around 620 members of the PDI and 370 of the PAS. So that’s approxi-

The survey also shows that the total hours in a Canarian working week has fallen more than 6% since 2008, when the economic crisis began.

The Randstad study, in association with the National Statistics Institute (INE), revealed that we worked a total of 393.6 hours in the first three months of 2016, which was eight hours fewer than in

the same 2015 quarter, and 26 fewer than in 2008.

The effective working time is down in almost every community, which explains why the Canaries are still above the national average, which, in the first quarter of 2016, stood at 389.1 hours. Only Cantabrians and people in Murcia toiled longer.

Nationally, the figure recorded during the first quarter represents a 5.7% decrease, compared with 2008. Dur-

ing 2009, professionals conducted the most extensive of all the analysed time series with 414 hours. Between 2008 and 2013, the volume of working hours remained stable - between 410414. But in 2013, the number of hours fell to 398.

By sector, construction professionals are working more hours, with 431. In second place are workers in the industrial sector (426), and, finally, the services sector (379).

‘Hero’ dad is drowned while saving daughter A FATHER who died saving his daughter from drowning on holiday in Spain on Sunday was hailed a “hero” by the heartbroken family, who paid tribute to an “amazing brother, father and friend”.

Reece Morris, 40, clung on to nine-yearold Ruby to keep her afloat as the pair were dragged towards rocks by a strong current off the Costa del Sol. The businessman, from Epping, Essex, handed his daughter on to a group of swimmers, who dived into the turbulent waters to rescue them both, before he was brought back to the shore by lifeguards.

Mr Morris collapsed from a suspected heart attack as he reached the beach. But though

paramedics worked for an hour, using a heart defibrillator in an attempt to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

He had been staying at a villa near El Penoncillo Beach, in Torrox, 30 miles from Malaga, with his partner Carly Eeles and their two daughters. Carly had gone back to the villa to get a snack for their younger daughter Mia, four, when tragedy struck.

Officials said a red flag was flying on the beach, but locals said Mr Morris might not have seen

it as it was hoisted on a watch-tower, 300 yards away.

Mr Morris’s sister, Kelly, told of the family devastation as she paid tribute to her brother, saying: “He was the best brother, father and friend anyone could wish for. My family and I are heartbroken by this tragedy.

“He was trying to save Ruby. He was an amazing brother and I loved him more than words can say. We are all grieving and trying to come to terms with this.

“I’m so devastated.

He was such a caring dad, a hero, and loved his partner and those girls. Words cannot explain how we are all feeling. It’s the worst thing ever.”

Samuel Pazo, a 35-year-old administrative officer from Malaga, was among the dozen or so sunbathers who dived into to the water at 2.30pm after seeing the father and daughter struggling.

“The current was very strong, and it was pushing the swimmers towards the rocks,” he said. “The man was

holding his daughter, and another swimmer reached him before me and passed the girl to me.

“I helped lift her on to nearby rocks. By then there was a crowd who helped her out.

“When I looked back at the man, he was still in the water. He was not talking and he had tried to stop his daughter drowning.

“When they got him out, they could not revive him. It seems like he might have suffered a heart attack trying to save his daughter.”

Family and friends took to Facebook to post tributes to Mr Morris, who worked in the construction industry.

James O’Neill wrote: “It’s a cruel world we live in where the best people get taken from us way too early. You are one of my oldest childhood friends and it’s hard to believe what as happened. You will be sadly missed Reece, may you rest in peace.”

A GERMAN father was arrested in southern Spain after leaving his nine-month-old baby in the back of the car while he went shopping in a supermarket.

He parked outside the Sant Joan d’Alacant store in Alicante and went inside with his three-year-old son. But he left the baby sleeping in the back seat The tot was spotted by concerned passersby, who flagged down a Guardia Civil patrol car at the beach resort.

The officers, who smashed a window to reach the baby, were unable to rouse it and called an ambulance.

The 33-year-old father, who has not been named, returned from the supermarket to find police surrounding the car - and his infant about to be taken to hospital.

He was promptly arrested and faced a charge of child negligence.

Drifting migrants saved FIFTY migrants from Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa, adrift in two boats off Spain’s Mediterranean coast, were saved last week by the country’s maritime rescue service.

The rescuers first spotted an inflatable boat, with six Moroccan men aboard, stuck in high winds as it tried to cross from Morocco’s northern coast to the southern Spanish region of Almeria.

A second boat, carrying 34 men and 10 women from sub-Saharan

African countries, was later seen in the same area.

One woman was treated for burns, but the rest of the migrants were in good health. They were all taken aboard a medical ship and transferred to Spain.

A total of 3,845 migrants entered Spain via sea crossings last year, according to the International Organisation for Migration.

But they formed a tiny fraction of the 956,000 who reached Europe the same way.

Canarians opt for staycations MORE than 90% of Canarians will not leave Spain this summer, according to the survey results of “Holiday habits of the Canaries”,

by Brewers Spain and Madison Market Research.

This study also attempts to answer the question: what do the Canarians do on their holidays?

According to the information gathered, most Canarians are dedicated to relaxing! Some 31% say they catch up on their sleep and take naps during the day, while 30% choose to explore the holiday destination inside the first 24 hours.

And beer is the holiday drink of choice for Canarians in summer, 45% enjoying a drop on the first day!

works, which is not surprising: Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram being the most popular.

And 56% of us will visit the beach, while 76% will go shopping.

Canarians’ holidays have evolved over the past decades.

The study notes: “If we compare how the Canarians enjoy their vacation today compared with previous decades, major changes are observed in the housing and luggage.

“While in the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties, most Canarians on holiday stayed in apartments and houses of relatives, now they do so in hotels.”

“Also, in decades gone by, we would pack the swimsuit, a camera and not much else, apart from a book.

“Since 2000, electronic devices began to sneak into suitcases, and 72% of us no longer go on holiday without mobile phones or devices.”

CARS hold their value in the Canary Islands, and there is no sign of that trend changing. The average price of a used car has reached 12,786 euros, after rising 10.3% compared with the same month last year.

A survey by coches. net shows that the average sum paid for a used vehicle In Spain was 14,055 euros in July - an 8.7% increase.

It means that buying a second-hand car in the Canaries is 9.02% cheaper than the national average.

But even among the Canarian provinces, there is a price difference between the Islands. For example, in Las Palmas it’s 12,270 euros, compared with

the 13,560 euros of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The supply of cars during July was represented slightly more by petrol-driven motors (54%). There is also not much difference between the average age of the cars on the second-hand market.

Vehicles aged five years account for 53.8%, which is slightly more than vehicles of six years and over.

July sales, in fact, were led by cars older than 10

years (52%) in the Canary Islands. The most popular were the Opel Corsa, Volkswagen Polo and Renault Clio.

All communities in Spain saw growth in the average price of used cars last month, compared with July 2015 - except in Extremadura, where the price dropped marginally, by 0.5%.

The highest increases occurred in Cataluña, Aragon and the Balearic Islands.

Madrid’s worldly pride MADRID will host next year’s international LGBTQ World Pride event, as well as Euro Pride, for the first time, to the delight of organisers.

“It’s very important, because it’s never been done before,” says Juan Carlos Alonso, President of World Pride Madrid 2017’s planning committee. “It’s the first time these two events are being celebrated in the same city.”

Alonso and Javier Garrigues, Spanish Consul in Amsterdam, received the baton of Euro Pride from the Netherlands on 7th August. And last month, Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena of-

ficially took over the responsibility of World Pride 2017.

While the capital is making its debut as World Pride host, it will be second time Madrid has hosted its European cousin.

“Normally, when the world event is celebrated in a European city, the Euro Pride festivities are pushed to the side,” says Alonso.

“We knew from the beginning that we wanted to involve the European collectives, and now we’re changing the discourse to be the headquarters of both.”

In 2007, Euro Pride gathered on the streets of Madrid for the first time - an event made possible, largely because of the egalitarian policies put into practice by Socialist Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguea

Zapatero, who championed the legalisation of same-sex marriage.

It was Euro Pride’s most successful year ever, with another 2.5 million people demanding equality, according to the organisation. “It marked a turning point,” recalls Alonso.

Since then, Madrid has emerged as a leader for LGBTQ tourism, and its Pride events are some of the most well-attended around the world.”

He adds: “The preparations start now, and there will be activities throughout the year until the festivities commence on 23rd June, 2017.

Alonso has mentioned a few of LGBTQ sporting events (swimming, tennis and golf) without revealing the bulk of the pro-

gramme, which will be released officially next month Meanwhile, in Amsterdam - seat of Euro Pride 2016 - the World Pride Madrid 2017 planning committee tried to generate excitement and inform the world about next year’s event there, which is expected to attract over three million people.

As well as advertising in the streets and participating in the parade, which wound through Amsterdam’s canals and alleyways, representatives of World Pride Madrid presented a video.

That was followed with performances by Conchita Wurst, Tara McDonald and Spain’s representative at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, Barei, who accompanied the Madrid delegation.

Paris has lost its glittering image

ATTACKS by Islamist militants, strikes and floods have driven away one million tourists from Paris between January and June, compared with the same period last year.

Paris usually welcomes 16 million visitors a year and is one of the world’s top tourist destinations. But the drop is estimated to have cost the capital city about 750m euros (£644m) in lost revenue - described as “an industrial disaster” by a senior official .

France relies heavily on tourism, which generates more than 7% of its annual GDP. And some half-a-million people in the Ile-deFrance region, which includes Paris, have jobs linked to tourism, making it the area’s biggest employer.

The tourism industry has dipped sharply since gunmen from the so-called Islamic State killed 130 people in November’s Paris attack.

The city was only just beginning to recover from a murderous attack in January 2015 on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Tourist Board figures show that nightly hotel stays were down 8.5% in the Ile-de-France

region in the first half of 2016, with an 11.5% decline in foreign tourists and a 4.8% drop in those from France.

The Board says that even the staging of the European football championships failed to arrest the decline.

The Ile-de-France figures also show: *A 46.2% decline in Japanese visitors compared with the same period in 2015 *A 35% decline in Russian visitors *A 19.6% decline in Chinese visitors *A 5.7% decline in US visitors Frederic Valletoux, Paris region tourist board chief, said in a statement: “It’s time to realise that the tourism

sector is going through an industrial disaster This is no longer the time for communication campaigns, but to set up a relief plan.”

Mr Valletoux called for major investment to protect jobs in the tourism sector, and for government and trades union action to address the problem.

Ile-de-France regional President Valerie Pecresse told Le Figaro in an interview that the decline in tourism had worrying economic implications, and that recent attacks were the main cause.

But she said Paris must also work out why tourists were spending less time in the city compared with

London, and must “improve the quality of our offer”.

France’s tourism sector was also damaged last month when a gunman drove a truck into crowds celebrating Bastille Day in the Riviera city of Nice.

Two weeks later, two men suspected of belonging to the so-called Islamic State group killed a priest in a small town in Normandy.

Earlier this year, Paris was hit by a strike which resulted in rubbish going uncollected, and the city was hit by heavy flooding in June.

And since the recent attacks, there has been heavy security surrounding tourist areas.

Gender violence is still prevailing

NEARLY 9,000 woman, who were victims of gender violence last year, received support from the Canarian Government’s Care Service.

Together

with

the

Counselling for Victims of Gender Violence department, the Service came to the assistance of 8,684 women, as well as 1,544 minors exposed to this problem.

And 1,101 youngsters were also seen by psychologists and social workers.

Tragically, this horren-

dous problem of kids being exposed to this kind of violence is at its worst here in the Canaries.

In Tenerife, there were 679 cases, followed by Gran Canaria (361), Lanzarote (40), Fuerteventura (16), La Gomera (1) and La Palma (1).

The data, provided by the Ministry of Presidency, Justice and Equality, reveal only part of the scope of domestic violence on children.

But, said a spokesperson: “It emphasises the role in the psychological area, from which tools to overcome or face the

consequences of violence, are given through socio-educational guidance to mothers in appropriate cases.

Psychologists and social workers employ direct intervention with those children exposed to gender violence, both directly and indirectly.”

Oktoberfest - in August!

THE annual beer festival in Puerto de la Cruz is being expanded and it will have a new moniker.

The city’s Centre for Tourism Initiatives (CIT) has decided that this year, there will be a full Bavarian feel for the festival, which attracts thousands of people.

To the surprise of nobody, the event will now be called Oktoberfest and will be held, err, in August!

Today (Friday) from 7pm, and from noon tomorrow (Saturday), in the Plaza de Europa, the festival will embrace the spirit of the popular German holiday.

Entry is free and the festivities are sponsored by Incabe, which supplies the wheat beer Planer.

The gastronomic part of proceedings will be led by renowned chef Juan Carlos Clement, who will install several food-trucks, selling food which reflects the Bavarian feel.

72-year-old found dead in baranco A MAN’S body was found by the emergency services on Monday inside a car, which had plunged into a Los Realejos ravine, in North Tenerife.

The car was discovered near the forest track of Cruz del Agua, after emergency services had spent hours trying to find the 72-year-old, who had been reported missing.

The Emergency Coordinating Centre took a call from a member of the public, and firefighters, who raced to the scene, found the body on the passenger side of the car.

The Emergency and Rescue Group helicopter was summoned to help recover the body, and the National Police are investigating the incident.

Paedo Denning admits more child-sex crimes for teenagers which ran between 1958 and 2001 in the Surrey town.

Former pop star and music mogul Jonathan

Former Radio 1 DJ Chris Denning has pleaded guilty to 21 child-sex offences committed between 1969 and 1986, having already been jailed for similar offences.

The 75-year-old appeared at London’s Southwark Crown Court to admit the offences, which include indecently-assaulting men and boys - and inciting boys under the age of 16 and 14 to commit acts of gross indecency.

The charges relate to 11 children, some just eight years old, but he denied another three indecent-assault charges, which will lie on the file.

Londoner Denning, who will be sentenced on 6th October, is currently serving a 13-year prison term for sexual

THE economic crisis has, unwittingly, lent a hand to the Canarian Government in its goal to reduce significantly the emissions into the atmosphere of gases that contribute to climate change.

The consequences of the recession has seen fewer industrial activities, a sharp decline in traffic and a general reduction in fuel consumption.

According to the re-

gional government: “The measures taken, along with those social factors, have allowed the Archipelago to make real progress.” The 2015 emissions were actually 13.7% lower than those produced in 2005.

The Canarian Government’s Ministry of Territorial Policy, Sustainability and Security says the expulsion into the atmosphere of CO2 has also been cut by quite a margin.

The 2013 figure was 27.5% lower than the target set out in the Canary Strategy to Combat Climate Change Plan, which was adopted in 2009.

No summer jobs’ cheer for anxious youngsters Catholic monk who ‘abused’ schoolboys

A CATHOLIC monk has been charged at Ealing Magistrates Court, West London, with a string of historical sex offences against five teenage boys.

Father Laurence Soper, 72, is accused of assaulting the boys over the 1972-1986 period, when he was a teacher at St Benedict’s School in Ealing.

Four of the nine charges he faces relate to one alleged victim under the age of 14.

Father Soper was arrested on Sunday after being returned to Britain from Kosovo, following a five-year police hunt.

In 2010, police said a man in his forties had made an allegation of

sexual assault, dating back to when he attended St Benedict’s School.

Father Soper was arrested later that year on suspicion of child-sex offences and bailed to return to a West London police station. But his failure to show up sparked an international search.

He was eventually detained in Kosovo in May following an appeal by officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command.

The 72-year-old told Ealing magistrates that his name was Andrew Charles Kingston Soper - Laurence was he took when ordained formally as a priest.

He was ordered to appear at Isleworth Crown Court on 19th September.

TEENAGERS are finding it harder and harder to find secure summer work, according to new figures from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR).

In fact, the proportion of youngsters aged 16 and 17 in education and work has almost halved in 20 years.

Will Kennedy, 16, says: “It’s harder right now to find a job because, apart from having a paper-round for a year, I haven’t had much experience in retail, which is what I’m applying for.

Employers are looking for people with experience.”

Will and his friend, Ethan Smith, have just finished their GCSEs and agree that it has been hard for them to fit in work experience around their studies.

“I wanted to focus more academically, whereas some of my friends are working in the chippy, or something like that,” says Ethan, who believes schools should incorpo-

rate work-experience in to the curriculum.

“A neighbouring school to us do that,” he adds.

“Every Wednesday, they can go out, get work experience and get paid - and I think that’s a really good idea.”

What’s not clear is the actual reason why fewer kids aged 16 and 17 aren’t working in the summer. It could be that under-18s can’t, officially, do as many hours legally. If you’re under 18, you can do a maximum of 40 hours a week, while over-18s can do 48 hours.

Danny Gill, who runs a cafe in the boys’ home-

town, Lutterworth in Leicestershire, employs two 17-year-olds and says attitude is more important than experience.

“It’s not just a case of putting in a CV somewhere now. I’m looking for a little bit more initiative,” he says.

“The last lady I recruited was in here with her friends at lunchtime.

We were really busy, and she just got up and said, ‘Do you need a hand?’

She washed pots for 20 minutes, and she’s still here!”

But he wants staff to commit for longer than one summer. “I need to

invest a lot of time with that person to deliver the service my customers expect,” he admits.

“So if I’ve only got them for two or three months, it would make it more difficult to take that person on.”

But Stacey Castle, who runs a nearby pub, says she needs temporary staff to cover the busier summer months.

“Yesterday, we were extremely busy and I could have done with a few more staff,” she says. “Waitressing can be hard, but we do give training.”

Ruth Lord runs a dollmaking shop in the town and says teenagers couldn’t learn the specialist skills she needs in a few months.

“I have 16-year-olds coming in here looking for work, but it’s difficult to take them on for such a short time,” she admits.

“They need to be able to do lots of little things, and some people are complete naturals. But it’s ever so hard to find them.

“To be honest, for somebody who’s only temporary, it’s not worth the hassle.”

DIRE STRAITS! MORE than 1.6 million households are said to be in “extreme problem debt”, and wage stagnation is making the problem worse, says a report by the TUC and UNISON trade unions.

It found that total unsecured debt levels, which excludes mortgages, increased from £48bn in 2012, to £353bn in 2015, with many lowincome families under severe pressure.

Of the dire position in 1.6 million homes, an estimated 1.2m have a household income below £30,000.

The “Britain In The

Red” report said some 3.2 million households are in “problem debt”, which means they pay out more than a quarter of income on unsecured debt repayments.

Another 1.6 million “extreme problem debt” homes, are spending more than 40% on repayments.

Frances O’Grady, TUC general secretary, said: “Families can’t continue relying on credit cards and loans to get by. But with the average wage still worth £40 less than before the 2008 crash, lots of families have little choice.

“Higher wages must be at the heart of the Government’s economic plan. We need a return to proper, year-on-year pay rises, and a higher national minimum wage.”

For low-income households in employment, extreme problem debt is growing fast, rising from 5% in 2014 to 9% in 2015.

Peter Tutton, head of policy at StepChange Debt Charity, said: “Every week, we see thousands of households struggling to keep up with their essential bills and credit repayments.

“Sluggish wage growth, and the rise in insecure jobs, have left households even more financially vulnerable.

“Too many households are relying on credit to get by, and this massively increases their chances of falling into severe problem debt.”

The mountain of unsecured household debt has been fuelled by a collapse in the value of

wages. A UK Government spokesman said: “Living standards have reached their highestever level and, for almost two years, wages have risen faster than prices.

“Thanks to changes in the personal allowance, we have taken millions of the lowest paid out of paying income tax, and workers will also feel the benefits of the new National Living Wage, which has already boosted pay for over a million people since it came into force this April.”

Bank of England figures show that consumer credit, which makes up the main part of unsecured debt, is now growing at an annual rate of 10%, which is the highest growth rate for more than a decade.

Sarkozy hoping to rule France again

N I C OL A S Sarkozy, the Former French President, will challenge to be leader of his country again in next year’s elections.

The 61-year-old, President between 2007 and 2012, made the announcement on social media ahead of the publication of his book, Everything for France.

He was unseated from the Elysee Palace by Francois Hollande, who defeated him in the last French presidential election But the country’s Socialist leader has since proved increasingly unpopular because many of the reforms he has tried to institute have failed.

Sarkozy wrote: “I have decided to be a candidate for the 2017 presidential election. I felt I had the strength to lead this battle at a troubled time in our history.”

He has been a member of The Republicans, France’s rightof-centre party, since 2015. And he is current-

ly its President, having previously represented its predecessor, the Union for a Popular Movement.

It was not clear from his posting whether he would try to take part in the primaries to win the ticket to be The Republicans’ candidate, or whether he would stand independently.

As many as a dozen other politicians from The Republicans are thought to be vying to become their party’s candidate, including Alain Juppe, Sarkozy’s main rival and a former Foreign Minister The ex-head of state, who became as wellknown internationally

for his fashion sense and marriage to model Carla Bruni as his political decisions, was formally investigated

by French authorities in 2014 on suspicion of so-called “influence peddling”, and was questioned at a Paris police station.

In 2013, he had already been formally probed over “abuse of frailty”, regarding an illegal, party-financing case linked to Liliane Bettencourt, France’s richest woman.

Earlier this year, Sarkozy was placed under formal investigation over allegations that his campaign overspent during his 2012 bid for re-election.

He will have to counter the rise of France’s far right, which has seen a surge in support in recent years, in the wake of a series of Islamist attacks, including massacres in Paris and Nice.

Some French commentators have stressed that some of his recent campaigning appears to have played on security fears.

Sarkozy wrote: “The five years that come will be full of danger, but also of hope.”

Weak Pound boosts income from Japan BRITISH traders enjoyed a boost in spending by foreign tourists in the month following the Brexit vote ... and the weaker Pound was probably the reason.

Visitors to the UK declared 7% more in taxfree shopping in July, compared with the corresponding month in 2015, according to Global Blue, the retail tourism analysts.

Spending by Japanese visitors saw the biggest increase - up 96% from the same time last year - while Indonesian tourists weren’t that far behind, on 88% more.

Tax-free shopping

enables overseas visitors from outside the EU to claim back the VAT they have paid automatically on any purchases made in Britain.

This tax is reclaimed at their airport on departure from the country.

Chinese tourists accounted for the biggest sum spent in July, with 32% of the total down to visitors from the Asian nation. The average spend by tourists from China also increased by 13%.

Ramadan’s late calendar start is thought to be the reason behind a smaller growth in sales attributed to those visiting from Middle Eastern Nations, but the total spent by Qatari tourists still rose by 29%. And Qatar visitors also racked up the highest average spend-

per-transaction, at £1,642.

Gordon Clark, Global Blue’s managing director for the UK and Ireland, said: “Though the weaker pound following the referendum was, initially, unwelcome news, it has proved perfect timing for tourists visiting the UK and enjoying our British leisure, luxury and cultural offering during the summer season.

“The cash injection we have seen off the back of this has been hugely beneficial for our tourism economy.”

He added: “It is reassuring to see that the demand for British quality, service and shopping remains strong, and is currently out-performing the rest of Europe.”

Badger cull on way

FOUR sponsors have dropped disgraced US Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, including swimwear manufacturer Speedo and fashion label Ralph Lauren.

ANOTHER English badger cull will begin early next month in five new areas - South Devon, North Devon, North Cornwall, West Dorset, and South Herefordshire - as part of the UK Government’s 25-yearstrategy to eradicate the disease.

Dorset, Gloucestershire and Somerset are already practising culling, but opponents say there is no evidence that shooting badgers is effective.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) would not confirm that new areas had been selected, but it did say it was “currently considering applications for further badger control licences as part of the usual licensing process”.

However, the BBC understands that culling companies have already been selected, and marksmen trained for the new locations.

Tony Francis, a farmer who had TB in his herd near Okehampton, in Devon, said he had signed up to one of the new cull zones to try to prevent the disease from returning.

“It’s an issue which has been going on for decades,” he said. “No one has really got on top of it. I think the agricultural industry feel we’ve got to try to take control of it.”

Badger culls have already taken place in 2013, 2014 and 2015, adding up to around 4,000. And, according to Defra, England has the highest rate of bovine TB in Europe, which results in thousands of cattle being slaughtered every year.

But anti-culling campaigners say there is

no evidence that killing badgers is reducing the level of TB in cattle.

Jenny Pike, of campaign group Devon and Cornwall Against the Badger Cull, said just 6% of TB cases in cattle came through badgers and that the UK Government should focus on curbing cattle-tocattle transmissions.

“It really is not a good use of taxpayer money, and it’s going to cost thousands of badgers their lives for no benefit at all to farmers,” she said.

Paul Wilkinson, head of living landscapes at The Wildlife Trusts, said: “The evidence shows that badgers are not the primary culprits in the spread of TB in cattle. The primary route of infection is via cowto-cow contact. A vaccine for cattle should be a priority.

“Culling has been shown to be more expensive, less effective than other bovine TB control mechanisms, and the free-shooting of badgers has been shown to be an inhumane method of killing.”

In March, hundreds of protesters campaigned against the plans to introduce culling in Devon, and a significant policing operation has been planned in case of disorder when culling begins in the new locations next month.

Culling in Gloucestershire is expected to be extended, while those in west Somerset and north Dorset are set to continue, says the BBC. And already, more than 3,900 badgers have been killed since the cull started in Somerset, Gloucestershire and Dorset this month.

They were followed by announcements from skin-care company Syneron-Candela and Japanese mattress-maker Airweave.

The decisions came after Lochte lied about being robbed at gunpoint by a policeman after a night out during the Rio Olympics.

Lochte, a 12-time Olympic medalist, has earned millions of dollars through endorsements. But Speedo, his biggest sponsor, said: “We cannot condone behaviour that is counter to the values this brand has long stood for.”

The 32-year-old fallen star said: “I am grateful for the opportunities our partnership has afforded me over the years. I made a mistake and I definitely learned

from this. Rio put on a great Games … and my immature, intoxicated behaviour tarnished that a little.”

Ralph Lauren, which has removed some of Lochte’s images from its website, said its sponsorship had been only for the Rio Games and would not have been renewed anyway.

But Ralph Lauren and Airweave both stressed that they would continue their support of the US Olympic and Paralympic teams.

Syneron-Candela said: “We hold our employees to high standards, and we expect the same of our business partners.”

Speedo said it would donate a $50,000 portion of Lochte’s sponsorship fee to the charity Save The Children’s Brazil-

ian operation. The value of Lochte’s Speedo sponsorship has not been disclosed, but the contract reportedly expires this year after a decade.

American business magazine Forbes calculated that during the 2012 London Olympics year, Lochte earned about $2m in sponsorships from companies such as Gillette, Nissan, AT&T and Gatorade.

Lochte’s performance at Rio did not reach the heights of his London triumph, despite a team gold medal, but Forbes estimated his endorsements would still have been between $1m-$2m.

The saga started when Lochte and three teammates returned to the Olympic village after a late night out in Rio. They tried, unsuccessfully, to use the locked toilet at a garage and urinated outside instead.

After first claiming that he and his three team-mates had been robbed by bogus policemen, Lochte backtracked and admit-

ted he had, while still drunk, “left details out” and “over-exaggerated some parts of the story”.

But despite the evidence against him, including CCTV footage, he has denied actually lying in his initial account to Brazilian police.

His behaviour has been met with disdain in the US and he has been widely pilloried in the US media.

Last Friday, the New York Post carried a front-page headline describing him as the “Ugly American”, along with the slogan “Liar, Liar, Speedo on fire”.

Lochte one of the most successful swimmers in history, with 12 Olympic medals, once had his own reality TVshow in the States.

In Rio, he swam in two events, winning a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay along with team-mate Jack Conger.

Speedo added: “We appreciate his many achievements and hope he moves forward and learns from this experience.”

Cheap noodles are new currency in US prisons RAMEN noodles have overtaken tobacco to become the most valuable commodity in US prisons, in response to a decline in the quantity and quality of food on offer, says new research.

“Because it is cheap, tasty, and rich in calories, ramen has become so valuable that it is used to exchange for other goods,” said study author Michael Gibson-Light.

And although the research is based on anecdotal evidence from fewer than 60 inmates and staff from one male state prison, the author points to other findings, which indicate the trend toward using ramen noodles for exchang-

es is evident in other prisons.

The shift, taking place across different groups within prisons, was not a response to bans on tobacco products within the prison system, said Mr Gibson-Light.

The cheap and cheerful noodles, which, other than sodium, are made with processed wheat flour, are said by some health experts to lack nutrition and increase the risk of diabetes.

Yet they are exchanged for goods including other food items, clothing, hygiene products and even ser-

vices such as laundry and bunk-cleaning.

Other inmates use them as bargaining chips in gambling when playing card games.

They are also replacing other traditional forms of prison currency, such as stamps and envelopes, says the study author.

Prison budgets in the US have not kept up with a growing population, resulting in a decline in quality and quantity of food on offer.

The US spent (£39.7bn) on prison services in 2012. But expenditure has not

kept up with a growing state prison population, which saw a rise of 343% between 1980 and 2013, although it has now declined slightly.

Mr Gibson-Light said staff and inmates at the prison he visited said the amount of food being provided had decreased steadily over decades. They also warned that the shift could have serious implications.

“Prisoners are so unhappy with the quality and quantity of prison food they receive that they have begun relying on ramen noodles - a cheap, durable food product - as a form of money in the underground economy,” he said.

“The form of money is not something that changes often or easily, even in the prison underground economy; it takes a major issue or shock to initiate such a change.”

But though some experts believe the Pound has reached its lowest point, there’s still the question of whether this can be upheld, and there’s no indication of much movement above the current levels.

With the Canary Islands a major destination, I’m sure many people got a shock last week when the news and social media reported that the currency exchange bureaux at some airports in the UK were offering less than a euro for the British pound!

In this day and age, most people make other arrangements for their holiday currency, and use these places in emergencies only - because airport exchanges never offer the most favourable rates.

Remember when most holiday-makers used travellers’ cheques?

These used to be the preferred method for carrying holiday money but - although they are still in use - demand has declined, as has the number of banks issuing them and the businesses accepting them.

There were charges applied when buying

them, commission payable to use them and cash them in, so they weren’t always costeffective, which is one of the reasons that led to them becoming less popular.

Nowadays, Canary Island visitors have their own preferences for buying their euros.

Some people prefer to bring sterling (or other currency) in cash and change it at a favourite local “cambio”, but this

can be risky if you’re planning a long stay and have to bring a lot of cash with you. And keep it safe during your holiday!

Others will use their UK debit or credit cards - but don’t forget to check what charges these incur. How many of you actually look at your statements after using your card and compare the rate of exchange you are getting, see what charges/com-

missions are made or deducted?

Most people like to have some cash in the local currency when they arrive to cover things like taxis or, perhaps, drinks and a meal if they’re arriving late.

It means they can relax when they get here and not have to rush out to change their money.

Travel money or a prepaid currency card is a useful way to do this.

Just remember, don’t leave it until you get to the airport to buy it!

Of course, if you have a Spanish bank account, you can transfer the funds you need with a currency company - before and even during your holiday (for those impulsive purchases or emergencies), avoiding any charges and getting a better rate of exchange compared with the bank.

It also removes the safety issue as you’re not carrying large sums of money that could be

lost or stolen. You can also buy your holiday currency ahead of time, perhaps taking advantage of a good rate earlier in the year, rather than waiting until you get here.

So remember: enjoy your holidays, be safe and be clever when buying your foreign currency. It’s far better to put more money in your pocket than in those of the banks - and not just in the summer months!

Irish officials’ alleged Olympics’ ticket fraud THREE senior Olympic Council of Ireland officials have had their passports, phones and laptops seized in Brazil as part of an investigation into alleged illegal ticket sales at the Rio Games, But no arrests have yet been made.

The Irish Times newspaper, and Irish broadcaster RTÉ, say the officials include OCI chief executive Stephen Martin - an Olympic gold -medal winner - from Bangor, County Down.

To lead its response to Brazil, the OCI has appointed a crisis management committee, comprising Prof Ciarán Ó’Catháin, from Athletics Ireland, Swim Ireland’s Sarah Keane and Robert Norwood, Snowsports Associa-

tion of Ireland. Mr Martin, a former hockey player, was previously a director of coaching at Ulster Hockey. The two other executives are reported to be OCI Secretary General Dermot Henihan and Kevin Kilty, Ireland’s Olympic chef de mission.

Brazilian police are also reported to be

seeking the passports of John Delaney, Football Association of Ireland Chief Executive and OCI Vice-President; acting OCI President Willie O’Brien and OCI official Linda O’Reilly.

But RTÉ says there is nothing to suggest impropriety on the part of any of those officials.

O’Brien were present at an Olympic Council meeting in Dublin on Sunday night.

The statement said an international accountancy company would be asked to conduct an independent review of ticketing arrangements in Rio. The firm will be selected this week. Its work will begin imme-

diately, and its terms of reference will be published.

Its report will be presented to a judge, who will chair the state inquiry into the OCI’s handling of ticketing at the Rio Olympics, said the statement.

On Sunday, the OCI said its officials had agreed to go to a police station in Rio on Tuesday for questioning.

“The OCI had an allocation of unused official Games tickets in their offices, which had been made available for athletes’ families and friends. The police also took possession of these tickets,” said the OCI. Former Olympic Council of Ireland President Patrick Hickey was arrested in connection with the alleged illegal sales last Wednesday.

He was being held alongside Kevin Mallon, the Dublin finance director of British Sports hospitality company TGH, at Rio’s Bangu prison.

Mr Mallon had been in jail since he was arrested at a Rio hotel on 5th August, in possession of several hundred tickets, including many from the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) allocation.

He was charged with being involved in the illegal resale of tickets for more than their face value.

His lawyer, Franklin Gomes, who visited him in prison last Friday, described Mr Mallon as “calm and confident”, and he would be out of custody soon.

“He knows he did nothing wrong,” added Mr Gomes. “He has no idea why this is happening to him. He is calm and in good health and safe.”

Last week, Pro10 Sports Management - the OCI’s official ticket vendor - told Olympic organisers that Mr Mallon was merely acting as a collection point in Rio for individuals transacting directly with the company.

But, though Stanfield starts bravely, he quickly uncovers some bloody and inconvenient truths truths which none of those in power are prepared to have revealed.

The story revolves around the lives of three men who are directly or indirectly involved in the murder, 20 years earlier, of the 15 year-old Connor Roche.

ITV are switching off all their channels for one hour today to give you the opportunity to get out and get active with I Am Team GB. It could be the nation’s biggest free sports day!

On Saturday 27 August The National Lottery and ITV will be asking the nation to get out and get active by taking part in I Am Team GB, the UK’s biggest ever sports day.

To celebrate the support the nation gives them by playing The National Lottery, Team GB’s returning Olympians will join famous faces from ITV at events across the UK. Over £80 million has been raised each year by National Lottery players to help fund elite athletes during the four-year build-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

To become part of this amazing day out on the bank holiday weekend, the public can visit the I Am Team GB website www.iamteamgb from Thursday 14 July, where they can sign up to find out all about the exciting free sporting events and activities in their area. From hockey to handball and rowing to running, hundreds of different sporting activities will be available to try, whatever the level of fitness.

As well as thousands of local sports venues and clubs up and down the country opening their doors to the public, two of ITV’s most iconic shows will be doing the same thing and inviting people to join them on the 27 August. The famous cobbles of Coronation Street and the rolling hills and dales of Emmerdale will be open and welcoming members of the public to take part in a whole host of sporting activities.

One of Britain’s best-loved sitcoms returns to BBC One for a one-off special as part of the BBC landmark sitcom season. The iconic sitcom, which was last on our screens more than 30 years ago, is back with a new all-star cast.

Are You Being Served? follows the misadventures of the staff of a retail floor of a fictional London department store called Grace Brothers. Picking up where Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft’s classic comedy left off, the show will bring Grace Brothers and some of the nation’s all-time favourite sitcom characters, including Mrs Slocombe, Captain Peacock and Mr Humphries, back to life with an all-star cast.

It’s 1988 and Young Mr Grace is determined to drag Grace Brothers into, well 1988, but he has a problem on his hands. Mr Humphries, Captain Peacock, Mr Rumbold and Mrs Slocombe all seem to be stuck in another era. A new member of staff, Mr Conway, joins the team but will he help shake things up or will he just put a pussy among the pigeons?

This brand new one-off special is written by the multi-award winning Derren Litten (Benidorm, The Catherine Tate Show).

The new cast include Bafta-award winning Jason Watkins (The Lost Honour Of Christopher Jefferies) who will play the role of Mr Humphries; Sherrie Hewson (Benidorm, Coronation Street) will play Mrs Slocombe; John Challis (Only Fools And Horses) will play Captain Peacock; Roy Barraclough (Coronation Street) will play Mr Grainger; Arthur Smith (comedian and writer) will play Mr Harmon; Justin Edwards (The Thick Of It) will play Mr Rumbold and Niky Wardley (The Catherine Tate Show) will play Miss Brahms.

As well as the original favourites, there are some new characters joining the show. They are Mathew Horne (Gavin And Stacey) who will play Young Mr Grace, the original Young Mr Grace’s grandson; Jorgie Porter (Hollyoaks) will play Miss Croft and newcomer Kayode Ewumi will play the character Mr Conway.

Famous faces revisit their former homes to share the memories and secrets from when they lived there. Actor Nigel Havers reveals how the Rolling Stones came to his London flat when he was aged 15 and shows off his collection of unusual animals at his countryside home.

Nigel Havers spent his childhood in Suffolk. When he was 15 he came to drama school in London and stayed at his father’s London flat in Temple near the Royal Courts of Justice. His father was Michael Havers QC who later became Lord Chancellor in Margaret Thatcher’s Government.

Nigel revisits the flat at his father’s former legal chambers, which he hasn’t been back to for 40 years. Nigel was living here when he got his first professional job aged 15, as Mrs Dale’s grandson in the BBC Radio soap (like the Archers today). He also remembers how his father represented Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards at the Court of Appeal in October 1967 when their drugs convictions were quashed. The band members attended a celebratory party at Nigel’s father’s flat.

The next stop on Nigel’s property ladder is the basement flat he rented in Fulham for a princely £6 a week (when he was earning £25 a week) in 1974. He moved in to the studio room with his girlfriend Caro, who became Nigel’s first wife when he was 22. They had a daughter Kate when Nigel was 25. Nigel was living in this one room flat when he got his first big break in the Sunday night BBC 13 part mini-series ‘A Horseman Riding By’.

Nigel’s TV break gave him his first step onto the property ladder when he bought a first floor flat in Shepherd’s Bush for £16,000 in 1978 (a property like this today sells for £750,000). While he lived here he was rehearsing a new BBC sit-com ‘Don’t Wake Up’ (where he played a recently separated NHS Doctor) at nearby rehearsal rooms in Acton and filming at the BBC Television Centre in Shepherd’s Bush. The series ran for 8 seasons.

In 1981 his continuing success allowed Nigel to buy his first house in Wandsworth. He recalls he paid £125,000 for it, and reflects that now it is worth over a million. He became a very keen gardener at this point and erected a greenhouse in the pretty garden. While he lived here the British movie Chariots of Fire was released in which he starred. The film went on to win 4 Oscars in 1982 including the Academy Award for Best Picture. It was one of the defining roles of his career.

Nigel separated from his wife Caro in 1987 and married Polly Williams.

After they had been married a few years Nigel and Polly moved to a grand house in South West London complete with swimming pool.

Revisiting the house today is an emotionally moving experience for Nigel as it was here that his second wife Polly fell ill with cancer and after a 4 year struggle with the illness died. Returning to the house reminds Nigel that he far prefers the intimate smaller properties he has lived in.

Finally Nigel welcomes viewers to his idyllic home in Wiltshire, a converted former barn. Here he houses his unusual collection of stuffed fish, parrots and even an antique Caiman crocodile. Nigel remarried in 2004 and says he is very, very lucky to be with George (Georgiana Bronfman).

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2016 BBC1, 19:00

Bill Paterson narrates coverage of the 2016 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which features performers from around the world, marking Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th Birthday with a selection of Tunes of Glory, performed in front of Edinburgh Castle. The Nepal Army Band commemorate the conquest of Everest, the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines mark the centenary of the Battle of Jutland, and the Jordanian Royal Guard, Band and Drill Team mark 100 years since the Great Arab Revolt. The Locheil Marching Drill Team fills the Castle Esplanade with a display of precision drill and dance, whilst the New Zealand Army Band also gives a performance. The Band and Drill Team of the King of Norway’s Guard deliver a display of music and drill.

Performers from closer to home include the Massed Pipes and Drums, the Tattoo Highland Dancers, the Imps Motorcycle Display Team and the Massed British Military Bands, who are joined by the Scottish State Coach.

Inside The Factory: Shoes

In the last episode of the series Gregg Wallace joins a human production line in New Balance’s sports shoe factory in Cumbria - the largest in the UK - to see how they produce 3,500 pairs of trainers every 24 hours, by sewing 32 million individual stitches and using 140 miles of thread.

Gregg will make his own pair of shoes and discover how they put together 27 different pieces made from eight different materials, which require auto and manual stitching and finishing with a ‘roughening’ robot and a hot oven. He’ll also meet the man who comes up with new designs, including trainers inspired by the three most popular pub names in England.

Meanwhile Cherry Healey gets hands-on in a tannery to help them process thousands of rawhides into finished leather for the nation’s shoes, and finds out how a ballet shoe company painstakingly turn 37,000 square meters of satin into a quarter of a million ballet shoes some of which only last for one performance.

She also gets to design her own court shoes at Cordwainers College in London, where she learns how to turn creative ideas into commercial products: last year sales of women’s designer shoes topped £532 million.

And historian Ruth Goodman reveals how, when the sewing machine was first introduced into shoe factories in the mid-19th century, traditional shoemakers went on strike, rebelling against joining a restrictive production line. She also traces the surprising origins of the humble trainer to the back streets of Bolton, where in 1895 Joe Foster invented his running spike above his father’s sweet shop, and discovers that Reebok trainers were originally British.

New York: America’s Busiest City BBC2, 21.00 This brand new series for BBC Two takes viewers to the heart of one of the most thriving, complex and economically powerful metropolises in the world - the city of New York.

Presenters Ade Adepitan, Anita Rani, Ant Anstead and Dan Snow are given the ultimate access-all-areas pass to three iconic public spaces, revealing the astonishing daily systems that allow America’s biggest and busiest city to function.

In the first of three parts, each filmed ‘as live’ to capture the sense of being immersed in a world famous location, the team present from Grand Central Terminal - taking a look at behind-the-scenes operations responsible for keeping the world’s biggest railway terminal running to schedule. To get there, Anita, Ade and Ant try commuting New York-style, joining 5.5 million commuters on the iconic Staten Island ferry, the subway, the suburban railroad and citibikes.

With a privileged first glimpse of the new station beneath Grand Central, Ant heads 10 storeys down to visit the USA’s biggest ever transport project, the East Side Access. Meanwhile Anita delves into the hidden world of lost property at the terminal, where 3,000 items a month can include the unexpected and the unusual, from a collection of adult toys to seven-foot-long canoes.

Dan Snow heads to Times Square, New York’s most visited place, to discover how today’s 230 LED advertising hoardings are maintained.

And Ade takes a ride in a yellow cab to discover that a taxi license can cost up to $1 million - but today this business model is under threat from taxi apps like Uber. Its history shows that New York is constantly adapting to change – and the latest developments are continuing to future proof America’s busiest city.

When the police come knocking, the Elliots and Douglases have to act fast. Meanwhile Juliet’s actions have tragic and unexpected consequences.

After all coming to a decision to hide their terrible secret from the police, suspicion and guilt takes its toll on both the Elliot and Douglas families.

Bill and Moira turn on each other after lying to protect their son Jamie, and it’s clear Bill is keeping things from his wife. The Elliots struggle to hold it together as the police, on the trail of Lee, interview them, with Louise making a big slip-up. Later, when Louise makes a shocking discovery, it is left to Claire to take action.

After confessing all to his partner, Peter decides to make an important journey.

Meanwhile, Juliet now has the finances to organise her daughter’s operation, but tragedy soon strikes.

When a victim of a frenzied attack is found in the woods with his head caved in, initially the team wonders if it’s a random attack or related to the location – a shrine to a local girl who recently commiced suicide there.

When the victim is identified as small time drug dealer Damon Horsley and Banks uncovers a link to local crime boss Steve Richards, Banks is convinced the hitherto untouchable Richards had a part in the murder.

As the rest of the team learns more about Damon and more suspects come under the spotlight they begin to wonder if the infallible Banks has got it wrong. However, whilst Richards is safely in custody, events take a tragic turn for the worse when another body is discovered in the woods.

When Banks confronts a powerful adversary who has been dubbed by his superiors as too big to bring down, his dogged pursuit of justice sets in motion a chain of events that rips at the very fabric of his life, both professional and personal.

Helen encounters unexpected challenges when she tries for promotion and Annie pursues her own results driven, gut instinct style of policing which threatens to ruin her relationship with Banks.

The Chronicles of Nadiya BBC1, 21:00

Two-part series in which Nadiya Hussain visits Bangladesh to explore the recipes that have shaped her love of cooking. In this episode she travels to the capital city, Dhaka, and spends time with a charity that delivers school dinners to some of the country’s most deprived children.

She cooks coconut and fennel samosas as a delicious treat for the kids. She then travels south aboard one of the last remaining rocket steamer passenger ferries and cooks a goat biryani for the captain and the crew. After visiting a small Hindu fishing village and learning about an ancient fishing method using trained otters, she continues her journey across Bangladesh. Her trip comes to an end with a return visit to her family home to share one last meal, beef curry with spiced okra and rice chapatis, and to say her goodbyes.

Elsewhere, Giles finds out if elephants can feel empathy - one of the most sophisticated forms of emotional intelligence. Can a herd of orphan elephants use it to help a very special baby?

The programme also finds out how new research is leading us to question long-held beliefs about the intelligence of reptiles: could these cold blooded creatures be smarter than we think?

With extraordinary access to the multidisciplinary police operation that brought them to justice, The Murder Of Sadie Hartley delves into the anatomy of a murder investigation and Sadie’s daughter Charlotte, 23, also appears in the film.

Filmmakers Raw Cut TV were there every step as Lancashire Police investigate the violent stabbing to death of the businesswoman at her home in January 2016, unpicking a crime committed with what prosecutor John McDermott QC described as ‘demonic savagery’.

Steve Warr, Executive Producer for Raw Cut TV says: “We were privileged to get the inside story of the investigation into who killed Sadie and the story that evolved is stranger than any crime drama.

How these detectives hunt down the two women at the heart of the murder is utterly compelling and the most complete and gripping picture of a real life crime being solved I have ever seen.”

Cameras follow detectives as the case unfolds from the crime scene to the dawn raid in which key suspect Williams was arrested, and the moment the murder weapon and other key evidence is discovered and ultimately to the arrest and conviction of the key suspects.

As lead Detective Superintendent Paul Withers and his team including Detective Bryony Midgley piece together evidence, they discover that Sarah Williams, who enjoyed a tangled web of relationships with multiple lovers including a 75 year old ‘sugar daddy’ and Sadie’s partner, former fireman Ian Johnson, considered herself Sadie’s love rival.

The police unravel lies told by Williams and discover her accomplice, Katrina Walsh, who claims to have no memory of the crime.

Yet evidence showed the pair hatched an 18-month-long plan to kill Sadie involving scouting her house, visiting Germany to buy a key weapon, and even buying a second-hand car in a bid to evade detection and pull off the perfect murder.

Heart of comedy A PART-TIME comedian’s joke about heart donors has been voted the funniest at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Masai Graham’s gag impressed the 10 comedy critics who drew up a short-list for the Joke of the Fringe award, which was then decided by 2,000 members of the public.

The 35-year-old said: “I’m not a full-time comedian. I’m a careworker who writes jokes, and it’s an incredible honour to land Joke of the Fringe. Not bad for someone from West Brom!”

The ninth annual award for TV channel Dave’s Funniest Joke was presented after 27% of respondents backed his line: “My dad suggested I register for a donor card - he’s a man after my own heart.”

Masai helps care for young adults with autism, and the gigging is a fun sideline. “I have

no ambitions of being famous or professional,” he said. “I enjoy doing it and I suppose I’ll stop if I stop enjoying it.”

The stand-up comic, who calls himself “General Punochet”, was previously named the UK’s “Pun Champion” after winning a tournament at the Leicester Comedy Festival in February.

Masai, Fringe runnerup in 2014 and fourth in 2015, added: “To win it this year, I’m over-themoon … really happy.”

He is currently performing in back-to-back shows at the Edinburgh Fringe: Aaaaah! It’s 101 Clean Jokes in 30 Min-

utes, and its sequel, Aaaaah! It’s 101 Naughty Jokes in 30 Minutes.

He promises his audiences “a 3.3 laughs-perminute bonanza”, and his scattergun approach has paid off handsomely for him at the Fringe with one of his 204 jokes.

Pills killed Prince TABLETS found at the home of late pop star Prince were falsely labelled - they actually contained a drug 50 times more potent than heroin, say officials.

A number of tablets discovered throughout the musician’s Paisley Park estate, in Minne-

apolis, tested positive for the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl - a strong pain-killer - an official told news agency AP. And post-mortem results in June revealed that 57-year-old rock star died of an accidental fentanyl overdose.

Records show Prince had not been prescribed any controlled substances in the state of Minnesota during the 12 months before he died, and it remains un-

clear how he obtained the drugs. Fentanyl has been partly responsible for a recent surge in overdose deaths in some parts of the US. When converted into counterfeit pills, users don’t always know they’re taking fentanyl and, thus, increase the risk of a fatal overdose.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune said: “It seems more and more likely that Prince became a casualty of what is be-

ing called a new national crisis of deadly counterfeit pills.”

Around a dozen tablets were found in a dressing room at Paisley Park. But the vast majority were found inside aspirin and vitamin bottles, tucked in a suitcase and bags, including one Prince often carried with him.

Some tested positive, not only for fentanyl but also for lidocaine and U-4770 - a synthetic drug eight times more powerful than morphine.

Around two dozen pills were found to have been labelled falsely as “Watson 385”, a stamp used to identity pills containing a mix of acetaminophen and hydrocodone - a weaker form of the pain-killing medication opioid.

Prince was found unresponsive and alone in a lift at his Minnesota complex on 21st April.

Emergency services attempted to resuscitate him, but they could not revive the legendary singer-songwriter.

Mrs Brown’s Irish Boys are laughing...

MRS Brown’s Boys has been named the best British sitcom of the 21st century, ahead of The Office and Gavin & Stacey, among other favourites.

The Irish series stars Brendan O’Carroll as Agnes Brown, regularly draws millions of viewers and has led to a film version.

A bemused O’Carroll said: “Lost for words … and that doesn’t happen to me very often.

Myself and Jenny - his wife and co-star Jennifer Gibney - are dancing around the living room. I can die happy now … but I’ll take my time!”

A recent live episode of Mrs Brown’s Boys attracted almost nine million viewers.

It is produced in the UK by BBC Scotland in partnership with BocPix and RTE. O’Carroll, who also created the madcap series, added: “It vindicates the fans’ belief in the show. They have kept us on the air - it certainly wasn’t the reviewers.

“There is an audience out there that comedy forgot - that Are You Being Served? audience has been left behind. Us winning this award proves that.”

The Office, created

by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, was runner-up to Mrs Brown. And completing the top three was Peter Kay’s Car Share, which won a host of awards at the Baftas earlier this year.

Don’t smoke, make some new friends, and stay fit!

By Val Sainsbury HAVING no friends could be as deadly as smoking, suggest Harvard University researchers, after their discovery of a link between loneliness and the levels of a blood-clotting protein, which can cause heart attacks and strokes.

Social isolation is known to activate the “fight-or-flight” stress signal, which increases levels of protein fibrinogen in anticipation of injury and blood loss.

But too much fibrinogen is bad for health because it raises blood pressure and causes the build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries.

Harvard researchers compared levels of the blood-clotting protein with the numbers of friends and family in a person’s social network, and found a striking correlation. As the number of social connections fell,

the level of fibrinogen rose.

People with just five other friends in their social network had 20% higher levels of fibrinogen than those with 25 chums. Having 10-12 fewer friends had the same impact on levels as taking up smoking.

It is thought that social isolation leaves people feeling threatened and vulnerable, which triggers an ongoing “fight-orflight” response, which can be lethal in the long term.

Lead author Dr David Kim, of Harvard Medical School, said: “Measurement of the whole social network can provide information about an individual’s cardiac risk, which is not necessarily apparent to the individual herself.”

“Social connectedness displays a significant association with fibrinogen.

“If there is an independent causal relationship between social isolation

and fibrinogen and, subsequently, heart disease and stroke, then policies and interventions that improve social connectedness may have health effects even beyond the well-known benefits of improved economic conditions.”

Previously, loneliness had been linked to a compromised immune system, high blood pressure, and, ultimately, premature death.

A recent University of York study found that lonely people were around 30% more likely

to suffer a stroke or heart disease, which are two of the leading causes of death in Britain.

But the reasons have remained unclear. Some researchers thought it was simply that there were fewer people to notice when a person was ill, or encourage them to take care of their health.

Dr Nicole Valtorta, who led the University of York research, said: “These findings are consistent with a growing body of research, indicating that social relationships are important for health.

“Our recent review, based on self-reports of social relationships, found that individuals who felt lonely, or who were socially isolated, had, on average, a 30% increased risk of developing coronary heart disease - or having a stroke.

“It may be that some of the effect observed by the authors of the article is a result of people’s social relationships being affected by poor health.

“To build on this study, future studies are needed to investigate whether interventions that tackle social isolation have an effect on health.”

In January, the Local Government Association said loneliness should be treated as a “major health issue”, while charity Age UK claims the issue “blights the lives” of over one million older people.

But although loneliness is often viewed as a problem for older people, a recent study by the Mental Health Foundation

found that those in the 18-34 bracket were likely to feel lonely more often than over-55s.

Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: “BHFfunded research has already identified that social isolation can have a negative impact on your heart health.

“Using a new measure of social connectedness, this study identifies an association between how connected we are to our family and friends, and our levels of the blood-clotting protein fibrinogen, which can increase your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke.”

He added: “We can’t conclude from this research that social isolation directly causes heart problems. But the possibility that social factors can affect a protein in our blood, like fibrinogen, is an interesting prospect for further research in this area.”

Mesón Restaurante La Fresquera - El Camison

The real taste of Spain

By Tara Scarlata IF I hadn’t walked in off a busy street in El Camison, I could have easily believed I was in the middle of the Spanish countryside walking into a small Bodega.

As the name suggests, La Fresquera (the food cupboard) is packed to the rafters with an array of Spanish food, Iberico ham, goat cheese, marinated garlic, Palm Honey, olive oil and wines from all over the province.

A first look at the menu makes you realise you have come to the right place if you are looking for a traditional Spanish feast, from Tapas to Paella or Suckling pig to Lobster … it is all on the menu. To start with, we were greeted with a tuna salad tapas and bread to pick on, while we made our choices.

And with such a huge array of dishes on offer, we were going to be a while.

The restaurant itself has a lovely ambience.

It is decorated with a very Spanish feel, and it’s warm and inviting, without feeling stuffy.

Seating is available inside among exposed brick archways filled with wine bottles, decorative plates on the wall and the small Delicatessen, or outside with the decorative cast-iron work and chunky wooden furniture.

The Kitchen is open,

so you can see and smell the chefs working their magic, and take a look at some of the food on offer.

The man you need to meet is the owner, Sr Juan, who is more than happy to explain the dishes on the menu as it is a little daunting.

You can see by the twinkle in his eye that he is passionate about food, and very proud of this restaurant.

For the starter we had Tuna Tartare for two, which came highlyrecommended by Juan.

My dining partner is a self-confessed meat lover, but this dish turned out to be one of the highlights of the meal.

The Tartare had a lovely richness, brought on by fresh avocado and egg, mixed with the moist, fresh tuna, followed by a palette-cleansing twist of lemon and tomato. The dish was very light and refreshing - and a perfect start for what was to come.

After an impromptu visit to the wine cellar (a nice surprise to find on the way to the ladies) we decide that the wine list would have to be consulted - and what a list this place has.

There is a choice suitable for all budgets and tastes, and we decided on a Protos Ribera del Duero Reserva 2010,

which went perfectly with our main courses.

I mentioned to a few friends that I was visiting this restaurant, and they told me I must try the suckling pig for the main course, so this was ordered, as well as the roasted leg of lamb.

Another group of diners had obviously heard about the suckling pig because, by the time we ordered, there was only one portion left.

So let’s take a moment to talk about this suckling pig (Cochinillo Asado). This world-famous dish, from the Segovia region of Spain, has strict traditions about how it is cooked and the pigs that are used … and the rest of the magic is up to the chef’s talent.

Served in a rustic dish, with potatoes peppers and onions nestled underneath, this looks very unassuming, something your mum may serve up on Saturday dinner time. But then the amazing smell hits

you, and you notice the colour of the skin on the pork and realise this is something special.

The thin, light, crispy, golden-brown skin that cracks as you cut into this dish is nothing like traditional pork crackling. It is like a crisp as it melts in your mouth and hides the amazingly-moist meat underneath.

The dish is cooked in such a way no spices are used, so you get the full flavour of the pork, which is truly delicious.

You don’t even need a knife for this dish because the meat falls apart so easily, and then you find the potatoes underneath, cooked alongside the pork. I didn’t know the humble potato could taste so good!

And the leg of lamb, cooked in a similar way to the pork, was really tasty as well.

The dishes were served with a small side-salad, which, as in the traditional Spanish way, you

were left to dress to your taste with a rich, highquality olive oil and vinegar on the table.

For dessert, I went for the home-made Flan Casero (Creme Caramel) which was effortlessly soft, as expected, and had a delicious, burnt-sugar taste, served with ice cream, and the apple tart served with Palm Honey (Miel de Palma).

The Tart had a reallymoist, crumbly pastry with a sweet apple top, the locally-produced honey which, by Canarian legislation, can be produced only on La Gomera, had a rich, deep, almost-caramel flavour and is a great accompaniment to this moist apple tart.

Make sure before you leave that you take a quick look in the Delicatessen, where there are some beautiful foods to take home.

And you can also pick up a great bottle of wine from their extensive cellar.

Let it all go, to your head

WHEN was the last time you had your hair cut - or coloured?

Can you look in the mirror and say that your hair looks good?

There are many times when I see and hear people say they don’t have time, or haven’t got round to having their hair done.

You should be returning to your salon looking nearly as good as when you left it. Okay, your roots might need a touch-up, but the cut should still be there.

Don’t leave it months between visits, so that your hair lets you down.

Going to the salon shouldn’t be a chore, and neither should it be a luxury. Your visits are like “YOU” maintenance.

After all, if your hair’s a mess, it’s not going to matter what you wear, or where you are going. You can’t just “take off ” a bad-hair day.

Try to get into a routine of making your next appointment as you leave. On average, a gap

of six to eight weeks is the norm, but ask your stylist.

This will ensure that you keep up to the colour and cut, and won’t need a major overhaul on your next visit.

If I don’t see a client for more than a few months, they tend to return, regretting their absence, telling me how they haven’t had time, etc.

Well, making time is the key, and arranging an appointment, as you leave the salon, is the best way.

You can’t expect a great gym body if you don’t exercise. Likewise, you can’t swish your head in pride if you don’t spend a little time in the salon, now and then.

Treat your hair with love, and it will show in the results.

It seems that all the fashion houses are plumping for similar designs, and they have gone all-out to revamp shoes as we know them.

Louis Vuiton, Miu Miu and Kenzo all went with decadent shoe embelleshing.

But this can be a false economy, particularly when it comes to larger purchases, or investments such as furniture.

You can tell quality, and often you do get exactly what you pay for. If you are working to a strict budget, you will need to make adjustments where you can.

However, there are some items such as sofas and beds, where lack of quality will affect your lifestyle - and those of your tenants.

Sometimes, it is possible to save money by not taking such drastic action. For example, if you furnished your property over 10 years ago, you probably bought from one of the quality shops in existence then.

The furniture was built to last, and I know of dozens of apartments in places

like Parque Santiago, Port Royale and Royale Palm where the furniture still looks as good as the day it was bought. Maybe your furniture has more life left in it than you thought!

If the furniture was of good quality in the first place, you may be able to give it a second lease of life by getting tables, chairs and sideboards sprayed in, maybe, white or cream to give them a completely different look.

When it comes to the sofa, which is clearly a key piece in your sitting room, why not consider having it reupholstered?

After all, the danger of buying a new sofa

is that it may be too big or too small, not as comfortable or not right for you. With your existing sofa, you already know what you have, and that it fits!

It is possible to reupholster your sofa in the material of your choice, and it will be collected and delivered back as new. Provided it is in good condition, this will almost always be a cheaper option than replacing with a similar quality item.

So why not consider revamping your property and giving it a whole new look, without spending a fortune?

Cats Welfare news

Our perfect companions CATS are wonderful creatures, with a great deal to offer their human companions.

It is believed that they were first domesticated by humans around 5,000 years ago and were used to help protect farmers crops from mice and other rodents.

They are still a popular, domesticated pet today - not for their hunting abilities, generally, but for a variety of other reasons. *Cats do well living in small homes and apartments. They don’t need a great deal of space to run around, as many dog breeds do.

Ideal for apartmentliving here in Tenerife. *Easy to care for.

Unlike dogs, cats don’t require walks (although some catowners do walk them on a lead). Their care is fairly minimal. Regular scooping of litter trays and feeding twice a day, but grooming requirements are low in short-haired cats. *Health benefits. Petowners are said to have reduced levels of stress, depression and lower blood pressure. Catowners generally have an improved immune function, and can help reduce the chances of allergies and asthma in children. *Cats are entertaining.

Put an empty box on the floor, or a large paper bag

(never use a plastic bag), some catnip, toys and enjoy the show. They are immensely entertaining to watch at play. *They offer companionship and unconditional love.

They will always be there to greet you when you return from work, and will happily snuggle up to you on the days you are at home. *Cats don’t smell.

That’s the wonderful thing about them, and they are fastidiously clean, spending a great deal of time grooming themselves. *They are quiet. Well, most of them! Some breeds of cat, such as the Siamese, are known for their love of talking, but the majority of cats are fairly quiet. You won’t

upset the neighbours, as you would with a barking dog. *Cats are independent.

True, most cats love attention, but they are also content to spend time on their own, (grooming, sleeping, watching the world go by). Most cats don’t need constant attention.

Cats obviously make ideal pets. But owners must take responsibility to ensure they are properly cared for. This includes: *Twice-daily feeding with a good-quality cat food, and regular fresh water *Providing medical care where necessary. This includes neutering once old enough, regular treatment for parasites

and vaccinations as required *Meeting their emotional needs. Don’t just get a cat and then ignore it. They require love and attention just as much as their human companions *Regular, scheduled play. This is especially important for indoor cats. Mini is a beautiful, five-month-old female tabby, but she is a tiny dot who just does not seem to be growing. She looks about 12 weeks.

We’ve had her in foster care for many weeks, monitoring her. She’s healthy and happy, but just in a very small body. We would like to find her a special home, where she can be looked after and loved. She will be spayed and comes with injections and microchip.

They do scrub up well!

SATURDAY’S Walk and Wash Day attracted many willing helpers of all nationalities and we had a fantastic turn-out of volunteers, who helped us walk the refuge dogs.

The happy inmates were then bathed and pampered on their return, so it’s a really special “thank-you” to everyone who supported the event.

Nearly every dog was included … which means we must have the cleanest dogs in Tenerife. For a while, at least!

Gaffers B pop Palms’ bubble IT has been said before about how the standard of pool keeps getting better in the Direct Telecom Pool League. And this season looks like being no different because the majority of results continue to be close. Well, not all!

Last week Gaffers B should have beaten Gaffers A and they took that form to Torviscas on Tuesday when they faced Palms A. The hosts had started the season in fine form, but the wheels fell off in spectacular style.

Gaffers B were brilliant, playing the right way, and they didn’t miss a pot. As for the Palms lads … well, they could have played until Sunday and not finished a break. The 11-1 scoreline will hurt for some time.

Meanwhile, Gaffers A, Division One leaders and defending champions, were again made to work hard by Palms Elite to get a result.

The home side looked good early doors as they raced into a 4-0 lead. But Palms Elite rallied and grabbed a couple of frames back, going into the final session 5-3 down.

Neil then took the

next frame to ensure a point for Gaffers, but Jumbo and Dan came back for Elite to bring the score back to 6-5.

However, Gaffers A had a little more gas in the tank to take the final frame and the points.

Phoenix Potters, who have made a good start to the season, were hoping to keep right behind Gaffers A as they went to Silencio to play Exiles A, who’d had a bad result the week before at home.

They were determined to avoid a repeat, and frames were close as it began turning into a game of chess. But Exiles A eventually clinched the winning frame. Have the Los Abrigos OAPs run out of steam already?

Sitting nicely in third spot are Rewind Rewired, who came up from Division Two and have been taking some decent scalps.

They made the short trip from Puerto Colon to Torviscas to play Tenerife Hammers A, which looked a tricky fixture.

Hammers made the better start and soon moved into a 3-1 lead, which they held through the second session to be 5-3 ahead.

And when Barry beat Tim to make it 6-3, the points looked to be heading Hammers’ way.

collapse saw Roger, Victor and Gary take the final three frames for Rewind to ensure a good, early-season point. It was the fourth choke by Hammers, who need to find their old steel.

Treehouse A are keeping themselves in the title hunt after another good home performance, this time against Terrace Roosters. The first session was a close affair, the scores level at 2-2, and this was mirrored in the final session.

But Treehouse A had already come into their own in the middle section as they took all four frames, which killed the match off and gained them the points, Scott winning three from three.

Terrace Bantams fared better than their stable-mates, securing a good home win against Bluebell A. Bantams took a 3-1 lead, but the second session was closer as the Bluebells fought back to get within two frames at 5-3.

The away side then took the next frame to put pressure on the hosts, but Mal, Pete and Adi finished strongly to earn Bantams the win.

Rewind A, still looking for their first points of the season, faced Dreamers A, who are another team with title aspirations.

The home side have bought some new players into the team to try to kick-start their season, and French Michael has been a revelation. He won his three matches, but he cannot do it all on his own!

Dreamers ground out the frames and, with all the players chipping in, just managed to get over the finish line to take the points.

In Division Two, Picasso’s A still lead the way, but they suffered their first defeat of the season this week at the hands of The Crown.

Picasso’s made a superb start, taking a quick 3-2 lead, but The Crown roared back and played their

best pool of the season, with five frames on the bounce. Game over!

Picasso’s grabbed the last two frames to give the scoreline a more respectable look, but they will be looking to get back to winning ways soon.

League newcomers Yates Bar started slowly, but they have soon got into their stride, picking up another three points at home against another new team, Palms Rebels.

Yates came out of the traps quickly and took early frames, for which the Rebels had no reply. The Rebels need to find their feet - and quickly!

Bluebell B, also having a good start to the season, didn’t have one against Treehouse B on Tuesday night, though, as they went behind 5-1.

They managed to stop the rot and took two quick frames to leave Treehouse B leading 5-3 going into the last four.

But Bluebell B dug deep and won all four frames to turn the match on its head and take the points.

level in the lower division.

They started well against Splash Bar, taking a 3-1 lead, but this didn’t last as Splash turn it around to lead 4-3, which soon became 4-4 in this yoyo match.

There was still time for drama, though, as Splash went 6-4 ahead and were confident of the win. But James Hammers were not done, winning the final two frames for a draw and a point.

In the week’s final fixture, Hoppy’s A took on Exiles A. The first two sessions were close-run affairs, and there was nothing to choose between the teams as they entered the final session allsquare at 4-4.

Exiles’ Jason struck first against Kev to give the visitors a slim lead, but Hoppy’s hit back, Roly and Jason putting them 6-5 ahead.

In the final frame, Tomas from Exiles, needed a win against Debbie to snatch a point in what was an intriguing clash. And Tomas was ready to celebrate as he rolled the black in, only to be left heartbroken when the white also dropped in, giving Hoppy’s the points.

Tip-top trebles turn-out!

THE third and last of our Oasis Fm Darts League knockout competitions took place last Friday, and an excellent turn-out of 90 players, spread across five venues, squared up to get their hands on some nice shiny silverware come the end of the season.

And the evening was especially successful for one particular venue as you will see.

Seven Division One trebles teams fought it out at Spear Chuckers’ venue in Valle San Lorenzo, and the night’s theme began as the Pas O Nadas trio of Richard, Wattie and Andy beat Phoenix Bar’s Mitch,

London and Dave. In fact the Nadas boys, with Richard hitting three maximums, ran all the way through to book their finals night place.

The same number of players came together at Palms Sports Bar, and an equally tough draw saw Becks, Gualty and Steve, from Pas O Nadas, beat the Palms Sports Bar team and both Gaffers teams on their way to securing a final place.

So we can see where this is heading now, although the Los Abrigos outfit couldn’t have had it all their own way because they didn’t have a team in the Division 2 draw!

Palms Pool Bar hosted five teams in that Division 2 section, and some close matches ensued. But, sadly, there was no luck for former Belgian champion Luc, and his friends from Rood.

They were dumped

out in the first round by eventual venue winners Per, Mick and Simon, from Picassos, who also beat triplets from Bar Leones and Bar 180 along the way.

The other Division 2 venue, Sundowners, saw one of the

league’s newcomers win through to set up what will be an interesting final come 30th September. Tony, Alan and Baz, from The Tavern, beat pairings from Emerald Lounge and Palms Pool Bar to seal their first-ever

trebles knockout final spot.

At the Pas O Nadas venue in Los Abrigos, (not them again!) 21 players made up the seven teams in the allgirl event, and I don’t have to tell you that one of the winning

teams was from Pas O Nadas. Anne, Gio and Karen beat Jackie, Jackie and Yvonne from Palms Pool Bar to reserve their finals’ night berth, where they will face the Rood trio of Conny, Linda and Jackie, who knocked out teams from Sundowners and Nauta Bar. Many thanks to all the hosting venues, and to the volunteer chalkers. Finals night - or should that be Pas O Nadas night? - is at Nauta Bar on Friday, 30th September.

Jay’s Guns N’ Roses team fires!

WE are two games in to the Premier League and, judging by the results, some teams are still feeling their way into the season.

There are one or two sides looking strong already, but there’s still time within the transfer window for clubs to improve their squads and options.

The same applies to Oasis Fm Fantasy League managers because tweaks can be made constantly and power-ups used.

It was a spread across the league in terms of the point-scoring team of the week. Current front-runners Man

City, Man Utd and Hull all provided two players each, the rest coming from Burnley, Sunderland, Spurs, West Ham and Middlesbrough. The players of the week were all twogoal scorers - Nolito and Aguero from Man

City, Ibrahimovic from Man Utd and, joining such exulted company, Middlesbrough’s Struani. They all returned 13 points.

In our Fantasy League, it’s safe to assume that leading team manager Jay Merrick,

son of former Oasis Fm DJ Chris, is a Guns N’ Roses fan, as his team, The Slash Axl Duffs, took top spot. He had a good 77-point return and leads the way by one point.

Close behind is this week’s team of the

week, Simply the Best, managed by Lesley Bradley. They scored an unrivalled 86 points, which moved them up the table nicely.

Both teams had a forward line in common, with Aguero and Ibrahimovic contributing 39 points between them.

Remember to check in on your team before the next game week to ensure you spot injuries or suspensions.

In this league, you need to play your strongest team, weekin, week-out … and use your power-ups carefully!

Spurs can rule Liverpool Tottenham v Liverpool

Watford v Arsenal Form Watford: LDDLDL Arsenal: DLWWLD Head-to-head: Arsenal have won five and lost one of their last six matches against Watford.

Team news: New Watford signings Isaac Success and Brice Dja Djedje are both struggling with injuries, but Success could be in line to play. New signing Roberto Pereyra could also make an appearance. Arsenal remain injury-stricken, with Aaron Ramsey and Alex Iwobi not expected back until September, Gabriel Paulista in October and Carl Jenkinson at the start of November.

Best bet: 1-1 the draw at 13/2

Man City v West Ham

Form Man City: DLWWWW West Ham: LLWLDW Head to head: Man City have won four and drawn two against West Ham. Team news: Man City’s Willy Caballero is expected to continue in goal, despite the imminent arrival of Claudio Bravo from Barcelona.

John Stones seems to have cemented his place in defence, and City have no real injury worries. West Ham are looking to add more fire-power to their squad, with links to Wilfried Bony and Simone Zaza Striker Andy Carroll is still sidelined.

Best bet: Man City to win 2-1 at 7/1

Everton v Stoke

Form Spurs: WDWLLW Liverpool: WLWLWL Head-to-head: Liverpool have won five of their last seven meetings with Spurs, but each of the last two have ended all-square.

Team news: For Spurs, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is out until the middle of September, while Moussa Dembele is still suspended. Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama are expected to start. Liverpool welcomed back Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge (pictured) in midweek, as well as Saido Mane. Emre Can aggravated his recent ankle injury and may not make the squad.

Best bet: Spurs to win 2-1 at 9/1

Leicester v Swansea

Form Leicester: DLLLLD Swansea: WLWWWL Head-to-head: Leicester have won four and lost two of their last six meetings with Swansea.

Team news: Leicester new-signing Nampalys Mendy is expected to miss out, as is Jordan Schlupp. But newcomers Ahmed Musa and Bartosz Kapustka provide an added dimension to the attack. Swansea’s clubrecord striker Borja Baston is out with a muscular injury. Fellow new-signing Fernando Llorente is ready to play though, as are Leroy Fer and Mike van der Hoorn.

Best bet: Leicester to win 1-0 at 11/2

Form Everton: WWDLDW Stoke: WLDLWL Head-to-head: Stoke have won three, drawn two, and lost one of their last six meetings with Everton.

Team news: Seamus Coleman, Muhamed Besic, Matthew Pennington and Tyias Browning are all expected to miss out for Everton. Yannick Bolasie looked good last time out and is expected to start. Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri, Jack Butland, and Glen Johnson are all hoping to recover in time to play, but Ibrahim Afellay and Stephen Ireland will be out until early 2017.

Best bet: Everton to win 2-1 at 8/1

Crystal Palace v Bournemouth Form Crystal Palace: WLLWLL Bournemouth: LLWDLL Head-to-head: Bournemouth have won two and drawn one of their three clashes with Crystal Palace.

Team news: For Palace, Bakary Sako is hoping to be fit, but James McArthur, Fraizer Campbell, Joe Ledley and Damien Delaney are expected to miss out. Christian Benteke will probably make his Premier League debut. Bournemouth’s Emerson Hyndman and Junior Stanislas (pictured) should return to action, but Bailly Cargill, Tyrone Mings and new-boy Lewis Cook are thought to be sidelined.

Best bet: No goal-scorer at 7/1 (for betting purposes, own-goals don’t count!)

Southampton v Sunderland

Form Southampton: LDWDDL Sunderland: LLDDLL Head-to-head: Southampton have won two, drawn two, and lost two of their last six encounters with Sunderland.

Team news: For the Saints, Ryan Bertrand (pictured) is expected to be fit, but Oriol Romeu and Florin Gardos are thought to be sidelined. New-signings Nathan Redmond and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are set to play, while Fabio Borini and Billy Jones should be fit. but the same can’t be said of Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole, Lamina Kone, Seb Larsson, Jan Kirchhoff, John O’Shea, or Vito Mannone.

Best bet: Southampton to win 2-1 at 17/2

West Brom v Middlesbrough

Form West Brom: LDWLWL Middlesbrough: LWWDDW Head to head: West Brom have won three, lost one and drawn two against Middlesbrough.

Team news: West Brom are hoping to keep Jonny Evans, despite reported interest from Arsenal. Salomon Rondon will be hoping to continue his scoring streak, with Saido Berahino waiting to get off the mark. Middlesbrough will want to continue their winning run, Victor Valdes may return from injury and Stewart Downing is hoping to get a run. Negredo looks as though he could be the difference that keeps Middlesbrough up this season.

Chelsea v Burnley

Form Chelsea: WWWWWW Burnley: WLDWLW Head-to-head: Chelsea have won four and drawn two of their last six meetings with Burnley.

Team news: Chelsea’s Marko van Ginkel and Kurt Zouma remain sidelined, although Willian is expected to return to full fitness after a minor calf injury, and N’Golo Kante is expected to continue prowling the midfield.

Burnley’s Ashley Barnes is expected back after a hamstring injury, and new-signings Steven Defour and Johann Berg Gudmundsson should play again.

Best bet: Chelsea to win 2-1 at 8/1

Hull City v Manchester Utd Form Hull: WWWLWW Man Utd: WWWDWW Head-to-head: United have won seven and drawn one of their eight matches against Hull, with four wins from four away days against them.

Team news: Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor (pictured) and defensive trio Michael Dawson, Alex Bruce, and Moses Odubajo are all injured in a depleted City side. They have signed nobody so far this summer.

United have a clean bill of health and could afford new-signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan his first Premier League start for the club.

Fellow new-boys Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic continue to impress.

Will experience pay off?

Cordoba 1 CD Tenerife 0

By Roscoe THE new season brings hope and expectation in Spain, and it will be a massive campaign for CD Tenerife. They will want to get out of the absurdlynamed Liga 1,2,3 (thanks Banco Santander). But, even though they have the tools to do so, competition is fierce.

Half the league will have genuine ambitions of gaining promotion to La Liga, while the rest will battle to the death to survive.

There will be shocks, plenty of dark horses and every chance a Goliath will go down and a David will go up.

Few people last season would have predicted that Leganes would do an Eibar and achieve top-flight football. They have raised the bar for the little club and showed what hard work can really produce.

The close-season saw an unprecedented number of transfers. Every team have chopped and changed; some to balance the books, and others to chase the dream. The relegated sides have got rid of their big-earners, and there is no guarantee their replacements will do the business.

In Spain, like England, the relegated teams often struggle. Rayo Vallecano, Levante and, especially Getafe, are in for a shock.

Those who came down the previous season actually look best-equipped to go the distance.

Real Zaragoza have made some shrewd signings, while Elche have really splashed the cash. They have brought in 10 players with La Liga experience, including Tenerife legend Nino.

I like the look of Real Valladolid, now managed by that wily old fox, Paco Herrera. He

took Las Palmas up only a year ago, and the squad is packed with experience.

Cordoba were frontrunners all season before fading late on, and they will also go close.

Former Tenerife manager Jose Luis Oltra, who knows how to get out of this league, and he will bring out the best of Alfaro. The exCDT favourite showed his new zest for life by scoring the winner against Tenerife last weekend.

Nastic will hope for another top-six finish, while Sevilla’s B team will be a joy to watch.

Having splashed the cash on some hot prospects, they will bust a gut to make an impression.

Cadiz under another former Tenerife boss, Alvaro Cervera, are dark horses. Their fans are brilliant, they have bought a couple of good

players and they will be watertight - like all Cervera sides!

Tenerife also have an “unofficial” B team this season because Mirandes have SEVEN former CDT players: Roberto, Cendros, Aurtenetxe, Maikel, Guarrotxenoa, Pedro Martin and Abdon Prats.

So what of Tenerife?

Half-a-dozen signings have been made, but, for many, the really important factor is the players who haven’t left. Choco Lozano is back for another season - but, come June, it’s buy or goodbye. I’m still not convinced he is topclass.

Despite newspaper talk, Omar and Cristo are still in Santa Cruz along with Nano. For now.

Nano has been one of the summer’s buzz players. A handful of clubs, including Leicester, Newcastle and South-

ampton have made strong noises. But no offer was accepted.

Nano said he wanted to stay, and the club said they would offer him a new deal. That has happened, but not to Nano’s liking. It included no pay rise, which would move him in line with senior players.

It’s believed that he would be happy to leave, but, with a week to go, he is still here. A minor injury has kept him off the field and out of sight of scouts. It’s a real coin-toss as to whether he will be with us on 2nd September.

If he is sold, a new striker will need to be parachuted in, and some interesting names have been thrown around, including Diego Ifran! Watch this space.

The new boys are more like Dad’s Army. You can see the mindset. Tenerife have some excit-

ing youngsters, so pair them with old heads.

The squad is now full of over-29s and under-23s.

There is nothing in the middle.

And that is the concern. Can the old heads do a full season? Can the young pups? On paper it is smart, and there is no doubt that Tenerife have the know-how.

This team have always looked after themselves and will fear nobody in the tunnel. But, as we saw against Cordoba, they sometimes go too far.

Tenerife are an easy team to wind up, and the word is out on that.

Ruiz, Vitolo, Sanz and Suso all have a lot of miles on the clock, and I’m surprised there are no fresher options. Garcia, Edu and Iñaki are no improvements in ability or age.

It’s the same with Marc Crosas. He is a ball-winner and a natural leader. But fresh he ain’t, and he will not thread the ball through the eye of a needle.

What I’m saying is that Tenerife have simply beefed up what they already are. They will be hard to break down and, at times, dour, especially at home. Yet they have a few whizkids who can dazzle and speed past a defender or two.

And with Tenerife, there is always an unknown star waiting to leap off the bus and on to the back pages.

If Nano stays, remains injury free, and bags 20 goals, then we are on!

The defence has the quality to keep cleansheets. There is a depth to the squad and manager Jose Marti has made a fine start.

However, I don’t see a Plan B, and a lot will revolve around making a good start. For the last two years, Tenerife have made a mark only when the clocks change.

Some key players may still need a few weeks to get up to speed, and a glance at the fixture list tells a story. It’s a tough start, and Tenerife could get to the end of September with their season effectively over.

Their first home league game is tonight! They host Sevilla’s kids in the first Friday-night match at the Heliodoro since 1998.

Over 6,000 season tickets have been sold, and the club will be disappointed if they don’t double that for the crowd this evening.
