OVER the last couple of months, you have probably seen these vehicles on the streets of Tenerife. They promote a holiday-illness claim service, which has got the local tourism industry up in arms. Continued on Page 3

In sickness & in wealth? Continued from Front There have been a few articles in Spanish newspapers, and even the odd UK paper has run the story. But is everything as it seems? At first light, the “claim service” seems like a bit of good, old-fashioned ambulance-chasing. The promotional use of ambulance style vehicles is even a cheeky touch. The premise is simple: if you have been ill on holiday and stayed in a hotel, you can give your details to a “consultant”, who will pass them on to a legal team in the UK. The team will launch a claim for compensation and take a percentage of any money paid out on a “nowin, no-fee” basis. While this is relatively new to Tenerife, the practice has been in place on the mainland, and in Mallorca, for a couple of years. It is understood that this type of claim originated in the Caribbean a decade ago. The so-called “Claims Clinic” has certainly got the backs up of Spanish tourism chiefs. In the mainland, HOSBEC (Hospitality Association of Benidorm, Costa Blanca and Valencia) has teamed up with CEHAT (Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation). They are trying to get the vehicles removed from the streets, and the “consultants” banned from approaching tourists. Antonio Mayor, HOS-

BEC President, has spoken with the UK Government and the British Foreign Ministry. Mayor said: “It is necessary that the ambassador of the United Kingdom and the Foreign Minister put a complaint with the British Government, and to the British judicial authorities. “This is improper and immoral behaviour towards a country - and a business sector that receives millions of British tourists every year.” Mayor’s words are very revealing because, as everyone involved in this knows, the “ambulancechasers” are doing nothing illegal. And that is the problem for the tourist sector. One Brit who works as a “claims consultant” told Canarian Weekly: “We are doing nothing wrong. All we do is ask someone if they have been unwell during their holiday. If they say Yes, we tell them we might be able to get them some compensation after they have returned home. We then take their contact details. Nothing else! “We take no money. We don’t take a copy of their passport. We don’t promise them anything. If they do not want to be contacted by someone in the UK, then they don’t give us their details. We are not selling anything whatsoever.” This is the main problem for those who want this practice banned. The people on the streets all

carry documentation, showing they work for a UK company, that they are paying tax and meeting all legal work requirements. The vehicles are legal and there is no illegality in where they park. Ashotel, the organisation representing hotels in Tenerife, is furious. Officials believe the practice is ruining Tenerife’s image, and they also claim that holiday-makers are being harassed into making fraudulent claims. Ashotel has been in talks with some of the UK’s biggest tour operators to discuss the matter, and the group is also believed to have spoken with the local and national government. Ashotel President Jorge Marichal said: “This is a scam. It is pirate lawyers.” Ashotel believes that most of the claims being made are fraudulent. They say that local hotels

will be forced into costly court action, or face large compensation bills. The fear would be understandable if it were true. Canarian Weekly understands that the legal action in the UK is solely against a UK-based travel association. Also, claims are, on the whole, being made only on behalf of those who have suffered from sickness and related complaints. In brief, this is a UKbased company, representing British citizens, in a UK court action against a British association. And that itself begs the question: “Why is Ashotel getting involved?” Canarian Weekly tried on numerous occasions to get Ashotel to comment on this point, to no avail. But we did receive a statement from a UKbased law firm which has a presence on the Tenerife streets. A spokesman told us:

“It has become an increasing concern that illness while on holiday is appearing more and more in the news. Tour operators are often hiding the fact that compensation is available. “If tourists have booked a ‘package holiday’ they are covered by the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992. “These regulations make the hotel or resort “part” of the UK tour operator and make them responsible (subject to the finding of negligence) for compensation relating to any illness or injury caused. “The package-tour regulations are confirmed, via robust legislation, and holiday-makers shouldn’t feel reluctant to seek advice if they have been impacted by illness or injury. “Most law firms provide “no-win, no-fee” advice, which means that if your complaint fails, there’s no charge. Only if the complaint succeeds will there be a fixed charge. “Ethical, legal professionals will always act in your best interests, advising clients as cases progress. “They will assess the merits of a case and will actively pursue those that appear valid. But, equally, they will advise complainants to discontinue those that are not. “In this way, they are unbiased, and holidaymakers should be cautious of taking advice

from anyone else as to how or what they should do if they feel they have a complaint. “Often, what appears to be well-intentioned advice comes from people acting for their own self-interests and no one else’s, and their opinion must be treated as such. “It’s also important for consumers to understand that being ill on holiday isn’t an open route to compensation. “Each case must be assessed impartially, and facts misreported deliberately, to make a complainant appear to have better prospects, can lead to allegations of dishonesty. “In these instances, cases will fail and other problems will arise, whereby an award of costs is made against the original complainant. This is why professional, impartial advice is really the only way.” Both Arona and Adeje town halls have received no complaints about these vendors on the street. Finally, it is worth pointing out that there are a plethora of companies which offer this type of service on the internet. They regularly run adverts on socialmedia sites and some have even started advertising on television and radio. The no-win, no-fee phenomenon now covers a range of claims, and, while the ‘holiday sickness’ variety is the first, it will not be the last.

The EU’s

Spain’s lack of government such a huge handicap to progress CHINA and the US announced their decision recently to ratify the Paris agreement on climate change … a document which will be effected once 55 countries follow suit.

Trouble is, Spain will find it more than difficult to be one of these nations. True, its political parties are unanimous in agreeing that Spain should be on that list, but the initiative has yet to be put before Congress. That is because, as we know, Spain has been under a caretaker-government since last year, when an inconclusive general election was followed by months of fruitless negotiations, then another election and even more fruitless talks to form a government. But who will ally themselves with a caretaker-government that cannot promise anything? The climate-change treaty is just one of more than 40 international agreements pending ratification by the Spanish parliament. There is also the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the extension to the lease on NASA’s Deep Space

Communications Station in Robledo de Chavela, the new Social Security agreement with the United States, a series of airspace deals with India, Mexico and Uzbekistan … together with dual taxation covenants with Mexico, Finland and Qatar. Other issues will not even reach the Congress floor for approval because negotiations

are still in their infancy. And Spanish legislators cannot progress until a new government has been formed. That could be on Christmas Day, when a third general election is mooted. It could be even later! The other issues include the clean-up of the land contaminated in the 1966 nuclear accident over Palomares (Almería), the creation in Rota (Cádiz) of

a helicopter airbase for US narcotics and lawenforcement operations, and co-operation with India on peaceful uses for nuclear energy. And the clean-up of the 1966 Palomares nuclear crash is also on hold until Spain has a permanent government. A report by the Spanish Foreign Affairs Ministry warns: “The continuity of the care-

Canarian poverty is not going away THE poverty rate in the Canary Islands affects 28.5% of its population, with 47% of singleparent families on a monthly budget of under 600 euros, and 90% with income below 1,000 euros per month. Yet Spain’s national average is 22.1%.

The figures were supplied by humanresources company Adecco, which stresses that 81% of such households are head-

ed by a woman. In addition, 53% of women who head single-parent families are unemployed, compared with 22% on average, and seven out of 10 have spent more than a year without work. The report spells out that the profile of women heading a single-parent family is a mother of between 36 and 45 years, divorced, with one child, after secondary education, and shares housing to save money. According to Adecco Foundation chief Francisco Mesonero, employment determines whether the women can overcome the risk of poverty or exclusion.

In fact, the percentage of women with under 600 euros per month rises to 67% when they are unemployed, and falls to 35% when they are working. According to the INE Living Conditions Survey, also stated in this report, single-parent households in Spain continue to increase, last year growing 8.1% to 1,897,500. The study also notes that the rate of people at risk of poverty continues, with a rate of 22.1%, although it experienced a decline of 0.1% over the previous year. By autonomous regions, Andalusia and Murcia are the most

affected, with a poverty rate of 35.7% and 31.8%, respectively. They are followed by Extremadura (29%), the Canary Islands and Castilla-La Mancha (both 28.5%) and Valencia (25.3%), who are all above the national 22.1%average. By contrast, Navarra and the Basque Country have the lowest incidence of poverty - 9.6% and 10.9% respectively - followed by Catalonia (13.9%), Aragon (14.4%), Cantabria (14.9%), Madrid (15.1%), Asturias (16.7%), La Rioja (17.1%) , Castilla y León (18.3%), Galicia (19.4%) and the Balearics, 21,7%.

taker government [for nine months now] is having increasinglyserious consequences for Spain’s international projection, derived from an institutional deadlock that makes our country look like a permanent lame duck.” The report adds: “The limits on diplomatic action, the loss of profile and influence, and the slowdown in decision-making, all have

negative consequences for our international prestige, as well as direct, material costs. “And, as a mediumsize power, the spaces Spain leaves open are being filled quickly by other competing countries.” The Foreign Affairs report, entitled “The cost of non-government”, illustrates its point with numerous examples of lost opportunities,

Mystery of the missing money THERE is something fishy in the Santa Cruz Fairgrounds. This week, the institution Ferial de Tenerife (IFTSA) management told the Provincial Prosecutor about “alleged irregularities, amounting to 120,000 euros”, which have been discovered in the accounting department. Manager Ignacio Pintado is said to have filed a complaint “for alleged misappropriation and embezzlement of public funds against Ignacio Jose Castillo Melo, who was the head of the Department of Administration and Accounting of IFTSA.” Melo has recently retired and, at the time of the “transfer of power”, an external report de-

tected the imbalance. Councillor Ana Zurita, who said more evidence was needed before the matter could proceed, added: “I was told that this man worked for more than 25 years in the company, and that the irregularity was detected when the change was made after he retired.” Few details have been made public, but it is thought that the socalled irregularities relate to different receipts for cash taken and cash banked. The six-figure sum suggests that the financial irregularity dates back a number of years, leading politicians and members of the public to ask why it hadn’t come to light beforehand.

lame duck through the absence of a fully-functional executive. King Felipe VI has had to postpone - or cancel - trips to Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Japan and South Korea, while dignitaries from Argentina and Israel have placed their visits to Spain on hold. Regular summits with countries such as Mexico, Turkey and Algeria no longer occur, and there have been no recent bilateral meetings with European partners such as France, Italy, Germany or Portugal. The report also warns: “We are being progressively excluded from the centres of power, where all the great decisions are made. “The gatherings of European and international leaders continue to take place, even as members of the Spanish Govern-

ment are kept on the sidelines because they are unable to make the commitments that need to be made.” According to the Foreign Ministry, this also explains why acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was absent from two summits held by France, Germany and Italy, “who have formed a core group to guide the future of the EU”, following Britain’s Brexit vote. And it is not just at the highest diplomatic level that Spain is losing prominence. Spanish ambassadors are gradually being welcomed less frequently by foreign ministries, or received by lowerranking officials. “This has a direct impact on issues of national interest, such as government procurement,” says the Foreign Ministry. “Other competitors

with support from their own diplomatic personnel have an edge over us.” In Canada, Spanish firms are competing for an infrastructure programme worth 60 billion dollars; in Australia, Navantia is hoping to sell the government frigates. And in Iran, the nuclear agreement has set off a battle between Western companies to claim a stake in a market which had been off-limits until recently. The report does not offer an estimated cost of this “non-government”, but reveals that Spain could face sanctions because of its inability to meet EU deadlines on a number of issues. The lack of a fullyfunctional government also means that Spain cannot release the funds it pledged for international aid, such as

Bin it, or face a stiff penalty

WE have all seen it … rubbish piled up beside collection and recycling points. Sometimes, it’s because the container is full. But often, it’s down to laziness.

Well that is about to change because Arona has this week revealed strong fines for anyone caught “littering”, or leaving items for collection on the road or pavement. Fines from 60-3,000 euros will be dished out to individuals or communities, who fail to

put their rubbish inside containers. Arona Council made the point recently that 30% of the waste in public areas had been dumped. Rubbish is collected in Arona three times a day. And if residents have a large amount, they can even call 010 and request a refuse vehicle, which will arrive, free of charge. It’s the same number to report an overflowing bin, so there is no excuse for excess rubbish around the containers. Arona says another problem is the separation of waste, because collection “services” are facing mountains of strong-structured box-

es, which cannot bend. Also, large, empty, cardboard boxes are often left lying around, as are rubbish bags full of glass, which should all be put in recycling bins. The Council also states that the waste bins are being filled with unwanted liquids in cartons, which, subsequently, leak and affect the pick-up trucks. This, in turn, leads to more cleaning - for the vehicles and also the collection areas. Throughout the Arona municipality, 57,480 tons of rubbish were collected last year, of which just 2,155 tons comprised paper and cardboard packaging.

the seven million euros earmarked for Syria. “In international politics, lost opportunities do not come back,” said a seasoned diplomat. “Spain needs allies to become host to some of the EU agencies - which will leave their current British headquarters - and to earn a seat on the UN Human Rights Committee. But, as the document notes: “Who is going to ally themselves with a caretaker-government that cannot promise anything?” Meanwhile, Spain has also been criticised heavily in a new report for failing to keep its promise to provide help with the refugee crisis. The report, from NGO Oxfam Intermón, has been released ahead of New York’s first Leaders’ Summit on the Global Refugee Crisis.

It underscores that Spain has so far taken in just 1% of the 15,000-or-so refugees it agreed to house in an EU redistribution plan, designed to reduce some of the load from overwhelmed countries Greece and Italy. “Spain is very far away from fulfilling its promises,” states the Oxfam Intermón paper. “The Spanish Government has followed through with just 1% of the amount it committed: just 201 of the 15,888 people it promised to take have arrived.” Oxfam Intermón highlights Spain’s position as one of the top 20 economies in the world. But it claims that it is not the lack of resources, but, rather, the “political will” to respond to the refugee crisis. As evidence, the NGO

points out that, according to government figures, Spain spends around 40 million euros annually in repairing and reinforcing border fences at North African territories Cueta and Melilla alone. In 2016, meanwhile, the budget it allocated to these Spanish enclaves’ temporary-stay refugee centres was less than half of that 16.3m euros! The paper concludes that Spain should use the forthcoming Leaders’ Summit “to make a radical change to its migration policy. “It should start down a new path on its displacement agenda, where human-rights prevail over any other politics”, instead of its present “more-thandubious role as an example in the EU for being efficient at the infringement of human rights”.

Helping hand for young graduates

Bulls fighting back THE third running of the bulls in the Madrid town of Guadalajara featured four people being injured, including a 25-year-old man who had a leg gored.

He was taken to hospital for surgery, while three others, injured while running, were relatively unharmed.

THE Cabildo, through the Insular Foundation for Training, Employment and Business Development (FIFEDE), has confirmed a new initiative.

It has a new jobs’ plan to provide training scholarships for young Tenerife graduates through an international mobility programme called Scholarships in Africa. This does exactly what it says on the tin. The Cabildo will offer non-

work internship for five months - from the start of December - in companies with links to Morocco and Cape Verde. Those interested in applying for these scholarships should go to the website www.fifedetfe. es. To qualify for the training, you must: *Be under 30 *Have had regular and continuous Tenerife residence for at least two years *Have completed studies in 2010 or later *Have recently been unemployed, or not doing paid work for organisations, insti-

tutions or companies Foreign Affairs Minister Delia Herrera, said: “Africa is a big, new market for us, and we need to be ready. With the latest batch of graduates, we can start at the grassroots. Africa is important and will open up new opportunities for the youth.” She said beneficiaries would receive important training - and the tools to learn languages. Herrera added that, ideally, applicants should have qualifications in one of these areas: Tourism, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,

Electrical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, Architecture, Graphic Design, Management and Business Administration and Engineering in Telecommunication Technologies. Also included are: Training in Arts Education Institutions (speciality Graphic and Interior Design), Hospitality Management and Travel Agency, Project Management and Construction Management of Decoration, Building Projects, plus Civil Works’ Administration and Finance Projects.

Spain’s EU warning SPAIN has been threatened by Brussels that it could be refused further financial support, should the government fail to control its budget deficit - at long last!

In the next week or so, the European Commission will reconsider whether to freeze the country’s funding after consulting with the European Parliament. President Jean Claude Juncker is said to favour imposing sanctions on Spain, if its acting government fails to take effective measures to reduce the deficit in

this second half of the year - and in its 2017 draft budgets. So far, Spain has evaded huge fines since the deadline to meet its deficit target was extended by two years in 2012, and again in 2014.

Spain could be penalised up to two billion euros, and could also see its funding, worth 1.3bn, put on hold. But Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici believes punishing Spain would

be a mistake, which could cause a backlash against the eurozone project. That is already on shaky ground following Britain’s planned Brexit from the EU and the rise of Europe’s farright and euro-sceptic parties. Moscovici warns of a ‘loss of support for the European project’ and reminds the Commission of the “exceptional efforts” made by Madrid during the last years of crisis - reducing public deficit and implementing structural measures. He also said the punishment would “risk causing unnecessary divisions” among European countries.

Bull runs, or “encierros”, are a traditional part of festivals across the country. The bulls run to the bullfighting arena before they face a matador later in the day. The Guadalajara bullruns occurred just days after anti-bullfighting activists clashed with local enthusiasts in the town of Tordesillas, in Central Spain, where a centuries-old festival involving the goryspearing of a bull has been banned.

Tragic family are ‘hacked to pieces’ POLICE discovered the gruesome sight of four dismembered bodies of one family - two young children, aged around one and four, and two adults. They were found at a house outside the village of Pioz, some 40 miles from Madrid. A police spokeswom-

an said the house was reported after a neighbour smelled “something strange” coming from the property. Local Mayor Ricardo Garcia Lopez said the bodies, which had been “hacked to pieces”, all belonged to a Brazilian family, who were renting the property.

Unhealthy outlook for Canary Islands JESUS Morera, Health Minister of the Canaries, has admitted that waiting lists in the Archipelago have increased - and they will actually worsen as the year progresses.

Morera says the list has grown by 8.5% around 2,500 people for the past 13 months, which covers his time in charge of the department. Despite the Ministry of Health’s increased budget for 2016, against that of last year, waiting lists were not reduced, or even made a priority. Morera says special attention has been

paid to long-term patients and the growing older population. “We have operated more, and reduced the average delay to 164 days,” he adds. “But we are a growing population. We have done more, but we need to do even more.” Having also noted the increase in various diagnostic tests and specialised consultations, Morera says: “There is an improvement in the Canarian public service, and it is adequately funded by the state. “But there are always battles, and we must seek solutions. We must have funds to get all the health departments to where we want them to be. We cannot take a single step back.”

Wine-growers hit by a harvest nightmare WE have heard a few stories recently about the problems at Tenerife’s vineyards. And now, it seems, the full extent of their troubles are worse than first thought.

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Forwards? Backwards? WHAT exactly is progress? If I have asked myself this question once this week, I’ve asked it a dozen times. Living in Spain can sometimes be a challenge. And every now and then, we all face one of those challenges. Yes, the dreaded world of trying to get something done, has to be the hardest challenge you can face here. Well, apart from trying to find a clean-shaven copper with a smile. This week’s joy started at the bank. I am “upgrading” (their word not mine) my account and this, they told me, would take a couple of minutes. Twenty minutes in and I’ve not done a thing. And neither has the woman opposite me. She has clicked the mouse a few times, she has checked her Facebook and, bizarrely, Tinder, a couple of times. Ten minutes later, I have signed eight forms and tried a dozen times to get the computer to register my signature. Finally it was all sorted. Until three days later when the bank called asking for copies of

my passport and residencia, even though they have had them for years! All this just for online banking, which I’m never going to use! I also had to get a new NIE certificate. There is nothing wrong with my old one, I’ve not moved house, left the country or suddenly tried to change my name. But the powers that be now think that getting us to renew our certificates is the way forward. Progress in the war on keeping us all in a pen, I guess. Then to top it all off, I committed the sin of trying to order flowers online. I had the credit card, enough credit, the right-looking bouquet, all the address and contact details and even 30 minutes, I’m not joking, to complete the process. What I didn’t have was the full name of the deceased, the contact number for the undertakers and the cause of death. The flowers were not for a funeral service but a standard home delivery. What was it David Walliams said?: “Computer says no!” Progress, huh…

The Island’s official regulator has confirmed that 2016 is now expected to be one of the worst harvests in years. There are a few factors, but the main reason is the winter heatwave, which has really taken its toll on production. As a result, grapes have ripened prematurely, which has led to irregular sprouting. The winter’s cold weather, arriving late for many vineyard’s farms, sparked conditions that caused diseases such as a powdery mildew, which affected production. This led to an extremely poor harvest, with

have stopped short of saying that they face a long-term problem with climate change, are hoping for a wetter, cooler winter. However, this Millennium has seen increased temperatures and decreased rainfall - something wine-growers are beginning to get used to. On balance, by regions of the Island, the Southeast, in the Valley of Güímar, will have a re-

duced harvest of around 30-35%. This area has 295 wine-growers, with 300 hectares in production. In the North, the Icoden-Daute-Isora area, where there are 443 wine-growers, spread over 168 hectares, estimates a decline of 30%. But the Abona region, which might be most affected, expects a harvest reduction of up to 60%.

Seprona agents have been investigating the whereabouts of four statues, known to have disappeared in the early 20th century from the Roman site known as Los Cantos, which is situated in the town of Murcia Bullas. Finally. After a lengthy probe, the Guardia Civil located three of the sculptures in two houses, at Lorca and Cartagena. Seprona agents recovered the precious statues (two in Lorca and Cartagena), which were in private hands.

The trio will have been part of a group which included a fourth statue, known popularly known as the “Child Of The Grapes”, which remains hidden. The sculptural group, estimated to be 2,000 years old, would have come from a Roman rural house, like a farm, and depicts scenes from farming at that time. They would have been placed at the four corners of the house’s central courtyard, and, either collected rainwater or were used for watering the gardens, using pipes run-

ning out of the house. The Guardia Civil has passed on to the Murcia community the information gleaned during the probe, which is still open. That gives the agents time to consider whether to take action against the householders who had the statues, which have been deposited temporarily in the archaeological museums of Lorca and Murcia. Incidentally, should a person be judged to have acted in breach of Heritage Laws, he/she could be fined up to 200,000 euros.

Historic statues are unearthed... AS part of its work to defend Spanish Historical Heritage, the Guardia Civil’s Seprona division investigates the disappearance of items it considers national treasures.

poorly-formed grape clusters and a greatlydiminished production. The wine-growers are faced with a crop short in quantity, which couldn’t have come at a worse time because the 2015 vintage has sold in spades. And the regulator does not allow a drop in quality, so this will accelerate the lower production. Wine suppliers, who

Felipe, heartbeat of Spain KING Felipe VI played down international concerns about Spain’s incredibly-prolonged lack of government - and the general disorder it has caused - when he appeared in front of a packed hall at the UN’s General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

The Spanish monarch stressed the nation’s “ability to overcome” difficulties in the past, and said that attitude would prevail again … despite the “complex context” his country finds itself in. “We Spaniards have always overcome hard times,” he told the crowd of dignitaries, gathered for the opening of the Assembly’s annual debate. The 48-year-old monarch added: “All advanced democracies such as ours go through complex situations at some point. But they overcome them through the resilience and cohesiveness of their societies, the strength of their institutions, and the

enforcement of their system of liberties.” To illustrate the Spanish resilience, Felipe spoke of the economic crisis which hit his country particularly hard, although the economy has since began to grow again. Spain has been in political deadlock since late December 2015, when an inconclusive election yielded a fragmented parliament,

breaking the traditional two-party system. Inability to reach governing deals led to a fresh election in June, with similar results. If no progress is made, Spaniards could be facing a record third election - on Christmas Day! The Spanish King also defined Spain as “one of the countries that has, most-intensely, contributed to the course of history”.

He said, eloquently: “When we live together in a democratic framework that safeguards our hard-won rights and freedoms, and respects our diversity, that is when we give the best of ourselves - and when we best contribute to the peace, security and prosperity of the international community. And we will continue to do so.” Later the same day,

the Spanish monarchs, Felipe and his wife, Queen Letizia, attended an event hosted by US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. King Felipe also had a few words to say about about Gibraltar, the disputed British overseas territory on the Iberian peninsula. “As Spain has always done in this forum, I cannot fail to remind

you that Gibraltar is the only existing colony on European territory,” he said. “In observance of a UN mandate, I urge the United Kingdom to end this anachronism with an agreed solution between both our countries, that will restore Spain’s territorial integrity and be beneficial for the population of the colony, and of Campo de Gibraltar.”

Bus station to get a 2m-euro spruce-up THE Intercambiador in Santa Cruz is about to be given a face-lift! The main TITSA public bus station, also has a large, private-vehicle, parking section, and access to the trams. It will have nearly two

million euros spent on the refurbishment. Tenerife Cabildo will splash the cash to improve the accessibility of buses, upgrade the facilities, and decrease building vibration! The project, presented

by the Cabildo President Carlos Alonso and Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, will begin in a couple of weeks. The improvement project, which will take six months, was award-

ed to Elecnor SA. The work is divided into two lots: one costing 1.4m euros and focused on functional improvements to the complex, and the balance to improve the building’s air-conditioning, with

new ventilation systems. During the work, buses will stop almost half-a-kilometre away from the current station. In addition, the facility’s new access, by Calle Fomento, will permit double the

number of buses. The Santa Cruz Carnival fair, which each year is staged next to the building, will be moved. And the Council has already contacted the Port Authority to find a new location.

Government stalemate delaying new projects

MANY Tenerife projects at local level are being held up because of the Spanish Government’s political stalemate.

Some details were spelled out during a day-long event, dedicated to Innovation and Urban Development in Tourism Destinations, at Costa Adeje’s Centre of Tourist Development (CDTCA) In Adeje, for instance, an integrated strategy for development projects into the year 2020 is still awaiting Government approval, months

after the final presentation. Maria Dolores Ortiz Sánchez (above), from the Department of Public Administration’s European Territorial and Urban Development section, said all the necessary evaluations had been carried out. But, she added: “We are waiting for authorisation to publish approval from the caretaker government. The work was very technical and rigorous, and we are eager to begin work with the selected cities...” The day-long event was organised, jointly, by Adeje Council and

Tenerife South simply topping

SPANISH airport controllers AENA says Tenerife South is the country’s fastest-growing airport, with the most passengergrowth this summer.

From July to the end of August, 1.79 million passengers passed through - 21.8% more than the 1,470,000 for the same 2015 period. And. encouragingly for the Canary Islands,

Gran Canaria airport scooped second position, increasing its visitor numbers by 18.6% to 1.99m during the summer. The podium was completed by Alicante-Elche airport, which registered 2.91m passengers - up 15.9% against last year’s figures. Other airports have also increased their travelling numbers considerably this summer, including Valencia (1.3m, +14%) and Malaga-Costa del Sol (3.91m, +13.9%).

Enerlis Consulting a French energy and environmental efficiency company. And the opening session was attended by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Regional Tourism VicePresident Cristóbal de la Rosa, and Cabildo Tourism Councillor Alberto Bernabé Teja. Experts from various government departments outlined the different projects and funding available at national and European level, to which councils and other bodies can apply. Canarian boroughs are being encouraged to consider initiatives in this area, given that their region could be eligible for extensive funding, if they meet the criteria. Not surprisingly, there were many questions from various council representatives, regarding funding and applications. Diana Alonso García (picture inset), Technical Councillor for Red Innpulso - a network of Spanish cities promoted by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness - invited the boroughs to con-

sider linking themselves to this national group. Currently, there are just three Tenerife towns involved, Adeje being one of them, and the advantages were outlined. The network’s main aim is “the co-operation between member councils, information exchange, discussions, assistance in solving similar problems, etc. It is also the recognition of an innovative town”. Ms Ortiz Sánchez, also outlined the importance of an urban agenda for Spain, aligned with European and global urbanisation developments. “We need to carry out an analysis of our cities and develop an agenda that is more realistic for our country,” she said, adding that her department was also looking to organise a forum for good-practice exchanges. Her brief includes examining local economy trends, energy transition, urban poverty and the integration of immigrants and refugees, with European funding for positive-action programmes. She also detailed possible finance under sustainable-growth programmes, including renewable and efficient energy projects, etc.

The train driver who stranded passengers MORE than 100 rail passengers were left scratching their heads in bewilderment after their driver halted the Madrid-bound train because, he said, he had completed his legal working hours.

The train, operated by Spain’s state rail company, Renfe, left the northern city of Santander at 7pm. Just over two hours later, it pulled into the Osorno village station where, the driver assumed, he would hand over to a colleague. But after failing to find a replacement he left the train, saying he had exceeded his shift hours. Under Spanish law, to prevent fatigue and avoid accidents, traindrivers are not allowed to work for more than

six straight hours. Carlos Segura, a spokesman for the Semaf train drivers’ union, said: “It is not because he decided to leave to go home.” The train’s 109 stranded travellers were looked after by Renfe, which organised two coaches and a taxi to take them to their destinations. The company said it was investigating what had happened, adding: “Renfe would like to reiterate its apologies to all the affected passengers, and regrets the inconvenience that this incident caused them.” It also offered them a full refund. Last week, four people were killed and 48 injured when a train derailed in Galicia. Preliminary investigations based on information from the train’s black boxes, suggested it had been travelling four times faster than it should have been on the stretch of track in O Porriño.

107m-euro loan fits Budget bill THE Canarian Government this week approved a bill that will boost its budget in the form of a short-term loan of nearly 108 million euros, to fill a deficit in this year’s plans. The loan is necessary as the state budget has not been signed off because there is no permanent government yet. The total credit is 107,769,954 euros, which will supplement the Canary Islands’ 2016 General Budget. Finance Minister Rosa

Dávila said the measure spoke “loud and clear, of responsibility by the regional government in the management of public affairs.” And, breaking the loan down, she added that 62.3m would be used for regional officials, with the remaining 45m directed towards public services. This will include 12.6m to education, among other things, to cover 22,000 books for students; 10.1m will go on health care and 1.5m to the justice department.

UNDER the Adejerest programme, 15 unemployed young people from Adeje received their professional certificates in Basic Restaurant and Bar Operations last Friday.

It followed their completion of a 200,000-euro course, run by the local council and the Canarian Employment Service. Manuel Luis Méndez Martín, Adeje’s Economic Development Councillor, congratulated the students during a ceremony to mark the end of the course. “Over nine months, you have done some extraordinary work,” he told them. “The employment world is waiting to wel-

Teide’s a National dumpsite

TEIDE’S vast National Park is being used as a dumping ground by a few citizens because the area is hard to police … and the public seem to know it!

Over the last year, the number of illegal dumping areas has risen sharply. For example, the area known as Las Casas Sanitarium, which is by the popular No.16 trail , has been transformed into a genuine rubbish dump. Recently, authorities discovered rusty bedsprings, broken furni-

It is believed that this site has been growing all year, and the authorities are now wondering what other areas of the park is being used illegally. The class professors also helped them attain their secondary school diploma.

Flight totals going higher and higher

SPANISH airspace providers Enaire, handled 53,136 Canary Islands flights in July and August, which was 11.5% more than in the same period last year.

Traffic managed by the company in Spain registered a record high this summer, with 398,375 flights in those two months, which was 8% more than last year, when it reached 368,929 in the corresponding two months. The peak came on 13th August, when 6,838 flights - 386 more than on 11th August

2007 - were counted, representing a record. Also, during July and August, the daily 6,444 quota was exceeded 23 times. These increasing flight figures mean there has already been 35 months of continuous growth, managed by Enaire, covering national, international and overflights.

Cash is no longer king CASH is now being used for less than half of all retail transactions, because contactless technology means debit cards are becoming increasingly popular for payments. They are even used for lower-value payments, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Figures for 2015 showed that cash was used in just over 47% of all retail transactions - down from 52% the previous year. It was the biggest drop in five years and means that almost 20% fewer transactions were made with cash than in 2011, said the BRC, whose report looked at the methods of payments used by UK shoppers when buying goods in-store and online. Figures last year from the Payments Council have already shown that, overall, cash had

Organ donors are breaking records been overtaken by card and online transactions measured by value. Tom Ironside, BRC Director of Business and Regulation, said: “Though the use of cash has been in decline for some time, it has seen a significant dip this year. “Crucially, retailers are seeing cash used in under half of all transactions for the first time, marking a real watershed in the payments’ landscape.

“However, cash remains an important payment method for many customers - and it will be with us for years.” Mr Ironside added: “It seems that more and more of us are turning to our debit cards to make payments, especially as new, contactless technology is proving incredibly popular for those lower-value transactions which used to be the mainstay for cash.”

THE Canary Islands closed 2015 with an 8.6% increase in the number of transplants, amounting to 163. And, by the end of the first half of 2016, a total of 98 had already been performed.

The data was released by Canaries’ Health Minister Jesús Morera, along with its Health Commission. Of last year’s trans-

plants, 123 were kidney, pancreas seven and 33 liver. And up to the end of June this year, 67 were kidney, 28 liver and three reno-pancreatic. Morera said the Canary Islands reached 41.4 donors per million population (PMP) last year - the highest figure for the last seven years, and overtaking the national average. And, offering his thanks, the Health Minister added: “El Canario Health Service (SCS) registered a total of 98 organ transplants during the first half of this year, thanks to the soli-

darity of 53 donors and their families, whose altruistic gesture has given safe or improved quality of life to transplant patients.” Morera said liver transplants were performed at the Candelaria hospital, while pancreatic and 39 of the kidney transplants took place at the University Hospital of the Canary Islands, and 28 at the Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria. He also thanked the 14 living people who chose to donate one of their kidneys.

Smoking is such a drag! PUBLIC Health England has just released figures revealing that the number of smokers in the country has dropped to the lowest level since records began.

In the build-up to its annual Stoptober campaign, which is being heavily focused online, PHE says that although16.9% of the population still smoke, there are now twice the number of ex-smokers (14.6 million) compared with current smokers (7.2m). And last year, one-fifth of the 2.5m smokers who attempted to quit succeeded. A number of celebrities have joined the effort, including former England cricketer Phil Tufnell, who says: “I have smoked pretty steadily since I was a teenager, even through my cricket career. “I have tried to give up before and know how tough it is, but I am go-

ing to try to quit again from 1st October. “Even if you have tried quitting before, like me, and failed, just give it another go and keep trying. The more you try to quit, the more likely you are to get there.” Tuffers added: “Stoptober is here to help, so let’s try to get through the 28 days without a fag, by taking it one day at a time.” Professor Kevin Fenton, National Director of Health and Wellbeing at PHE, said: “While it is amazing that there are over twice as many ex-smokers as current smokers in England, there are still over seven million people regularly lighting-up. “Alongside unhealthy diet, smoking is the biggest cause of preventable early deaths in England, accounting for over 78,000 people a year. “Quitters will soon see they have reduced blood pressure, easier breathing and better circulation. Stopping smoking is the best thing smokers can do to improve their health.”

Great Barrier relief OWNERS of a Chinese ship coalcarrier, which caused significant damage to the Great Barrier Reef more than six years ago, have agreed a £22m settlement with the Australian Government.

The Shen Neng 1 hit a shoal in April 2010, leaking tonnes of heavy fuel oil. But Shenzhen Energy Transport, the company behind the carrier, refused for six years to accept responsibility for the damage. It argued throughout that the reef was selfhealing and that the firm should not have to cough up. But on Monday, the two sides

reached an out-ofcourt settlement, after Australia Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg had stressed that his government would “use every available means to pursue shipowners who are negligent in causing damage to the reef”. But Greenpeace Australia Conservationists have described the settlement - less than onethird of the full £80m

clean-up cost - as “woefully inadequate”. The clean-up operation will begin in mid-2017. The 230m (750 ft) ship had run aground against a coral shoal for more than a kilometre, turning coral into dust. The settlement will enable the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to remove toxic, anti-fouling paint and rubble, allowing the reef to be restored.

Tipping? It’s such a poor habit in Spain

SPAIN, as regular visitors will be well aware, is a country in which people eat and drink out regularly, whether it be a setprice, a workday lunch menu, an evening meal, or midday drinkies at the weekend with friends and family.

But shock, horror, unlike countries such as the United States, where tipping is pretty much mandatory, and restaurant staff have been known to scold customers who leave less than 20%, it’s left

to the customer in Spain to decide how much to leave waiters, if anything … which is a moot point! A survey carried out in August about Spain’s hospitality sector shows that nearly three-quarters of customers tip less than 5% of the bill, while just 3% express their gratitude for the service with tips of between 10% and 20%. The study, drawn up by the Spanish Hospitality Industry Federation (FEHR) and cash-and-carry chain Makro, also notes that 50% of the 1,700 businesses surveyed reported occasional instances of clients leaving without paying the bill at all! Around 23% of patrons leave between

5% and 10%, a sum considered “normal” by restaurant and barowners Yet only 4% of those surveyed favoured making tips mandatory, as some US restaurants already do. Instead, they want less paperwork in their business relations with government agencies, more institutional support, better credit conditions and improved access to training. Another habit which leaves restaurateurs unhappy is the widespread practice in Spain of people not showing up for a meal after making a reservation. These noshows represent economic losses for the restaurant 90% of the time.

Divorce Pitts Brad v Angie BRAD Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the glamorous couple known as Hollywood royalty, are ending their 12-year partnership over “irreconcilable differences”, just months after buying a 3.47-euro mansion in Marbella.

Jolie’s lawyer, Robert Offer, said the 41-yearold actress, who has filed for dissolution of the two-year marriage because of irreconcilable differences, wants full custody of their six children. The lawyer said she wanted a divorce for the “health of the family”, adding: “She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time.” A variety of motives have been alleged for the split, from Pitt’s “bad parenting” to his “substance abuse”. One report claimed the actor had been having an affair with French actress Marion Cotillard, with whom he worked on his latest film, Allied. All the claims have been denied. Pitt said in a statement to People magazine: “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.” The couple, who have been together since 2005, married in 2014 and have six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. Together, they are worth an estimated £308 million and are said to own a number of properties around the world: the new one in Marbella, the sprawling Chateau Miraval in the south of France, a Hollywood estate and a Santa Barbara home worth an estimated £3.8 million. Jolie’s estranged father, actor Jon Voight, told US showbiz maga-

zine Inside Edition: “It’s a sad thing. Say a little prayer. I am concerned for Angie and the children and, hopefully, I will be seeing them very soon.” George Clooney said he was “very sorry” to hear of his friends’ split. The Hollywood star had apparently not heard the news when asked about it at Tuesday’s Leaders Summit for Refugees at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. “What happened?” Clooney asked, before being informed by the reporter: “I didn’t know that. Wow. I feel very sorry.” He added: “That’s a sad story and unfortunate for a family. It’s an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that.” Papers show that Jolie has requested “physical” custody of the children, while Pitt is granted “child visitation”. The date of separation was given as September 15, 2016. Jolie is being represented by divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who has earned a “Disso Queen” nickname by handling marriage dissolutions on behalf of some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Among those she has represented is Johnny Depp, who ended acrimonious divorce proceedings with actress Amber Heard last month with a $7 million settlement. In May 2013, Jolie hit the headlines by having a preventative double mastectomy after tests showed that she carried the BRCA1 cancer gene. She later appeared on US TV show Today, say-

ing: “I knew through the surgeries that he [Pitt] was on my side, and that this wasn’t something where I was going to feel less of a woman, because my husband wasn’t going to let that happen.” This will be the second divorce for Pitt and a third for Jolie, who was previously married to Billy Bob Thornton and British actor Jonny Lee Miller. Just last year, Angelina told The Telegraph the couple would “stick together whatever comes” while admitting: “Brad and I have our issues.” She added: “To be clear, we have fights and problems like any other couple. We have days when we drive each other absolutely mad and want space.” Jolie and Pitt, who married in private at their French chateau, have been one of the most scrutinised celebrity couples in recent years, since rumours that the actor had left his wife, Jennifer Aniston, during his filming of Mr and Mrs Smith with Angelina. Since then, the couple have appeared on screen together in By the Sea, a film written and directed by Jolie and produced by Pitt, in which they played a glamorous couple whose marriage was in crisis. Before they began filming, Jolie told the Radio Times: “It feels a little daunting. We haven’t worked together for 10 years. “But for all the reasons why people say we should be scared of it, we feel that’s exactly why we have to do this - because we can. So we’re going to go boldly.”

Gazza fined FORMER England football star Paul Gascoigne has pleaded guilty to a racially-aggravated offence after “humiliating” a black security guard in Wolverhampton.

The 49-year-old admitted using “threatening or abusive words or behaviour” during An Evening With Gazza show. Dudley Magistrates’ Court was told that Gascoigne humiliated the security guard working at his show, asking: “Can you smile please, because I can’t see you?” Gascoigne, who lives in Dorset, was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 compensation. Judge Graham Wilkinson said the victim was “clearly humiliated on stage” by Paul Gascoigne, “clearly because of the colour of his skin”.

There were a 1,000 people in the audience for “An evening with Gazza” and one said: “He clearly thought what he had said deserved a laugh.” The magistrates heard that Gascoigne told police the comment was “just good humour nothing else”. He add-

ed: “I’m upset if I have upset him.” The ex-England player, who had been set to stand trial, changed his plea to guilty before the first witness was called to give evidence. After the plea change, District Judge Graham Wilkinson said Gascoigne had admitted

“the sort of insidious racism” that needed to be challenged. He added: “As a society, it is important that we challenge racially-aggravated behaviour in all its forms. “It is the creeping, ‘lowlevel’ racism that society still needs to challenge. A message needs to be

sent that, in the 21st century society we live in, such action, such words will not be tolerated. “It is not acceptable to laugh words like this off as some form of joke.” The judge told Gascoigne: “We live in the 21st century. Grow up with it, or keep your mouth closed.”

Ice-melt may well alter Earth’s climatic system

ARTIC ice cover in 2016 has tied with the 2007 figure, which is the second-lowest minimum on record -and that is causing concern.

It stood at 4.14million sq/km, which was some way short of the 3.39m sq/km record low in 2012. But with changing winds predicted, it could still push the iceextent even lower. And the loss of ice means more heat is absorbed Professor Andrew Shepherd from Leeds University said. “Small increases in ocean temperature can quickly destabilise glaciers that flow into the oceans, and so we could expect further ice losses because of that effect, too.”

The Arctic’s sea-ice cover, which grows each autumn and winter and shrinks each spring and summer, has long been regarded as a sensitive indicator of change to the Earth’s climatic system. As land ice melts, it

adds freshwater to the oceans, which causes sea levels to rise, and surface-melt from Greenland increases. The extent of the ice has been tracked by the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) in Boulder,

Colorado, using satellite measurements. The 2016 Arctic sea-ice summertime minimum, reached on 10th September, is 2.3m/sq km (911,000 sq/m) below the 1981-2010 average minimum sea-ice extent. But the centre has

cautioned that the figures were preliminary, adding that changing winds could still push the ice extent lower. Ted Scambos, NSIDC lead scientist, said: “It really suggests that in the next few years, with more typical warmer conditions, we will see some further, dramatic losses.” This year’s minimum is seen as something of a surprise because scientists believed the low atmospheric pressure and cloudy skies in June and July had slowed down the melt. “It’s pretty remarkable that this year’s sea-ice minimum extent ended up the second lowest, after how the melt progressed in June and July,” said Walt Meier, a sea-ice scientist with Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Centre.

Sick teenager is euthanised A YOUNGSTER in Belgium, who was terminally ill, has become the first minor to be euthanised in the country it has been confirmed. Professor Wim Distelmans, head of Belgium’s federal euthanasia commission, who stressed that the child was suffering from an incurable condition, said the death was reported to his committee by a local doctor. Since 2014, Belgium has been the only country in the world to allow a child of any age to choose to end his or her life. Prof Distelmans gave no further details about the child, but Reuters news agency has reported the minor was 17, while Belgium newspaper Het Nieuwsblad reports that the euthanised child was Dutch, and that the procedure was carried out in the north Belgian region of Flanders. The Netherlands allows euthanasia on children aged 12 and above only. To be allowed doctor-assisted death, Belgian law states that children must be “in a hopeless medical situation of constant and unbearable suffering that cannot be eased, and which will cause death in the short term”. The statute was passed after a heated debate over the meaning of a “capacity of discernment”, which children are required to have. Any request for euthanasia must be made by the minor, have parental consent and be studied by a team of doctors, and an independent psychiatrist or psychologist. Belgian politician François Delperée said: “The main thing is the problem of suffering. The suffering of the child must be appeased because he/she has an incurable disease. The question then is: ‘Is euthanasia the only solution’?” Jacqueline Herremans, President of Belgium’s right-to-die association, said: “This is only possible when we have analysed all the possibilities. “For a child, we always wonder if there isn’t another treatment, a solution. How can we conceive the death of a child in a banal way?”

Sex-offence attackers alleged in care homes MORE than 70 alleged sex offences in Northern Ireland’s adult care, nursing and residential homes have been reported to the Police Service over the last three years.

The BBC can reveal that the majority of crimes reported were said to be physical sex assaults, including eight alleged rapes. Most of the carehomes look after people aged 65 and over, and the figures were obtained after the BBC submitted Freedom of Information Act (FOI) requests to all UK police forces. About 80% of forces replied, the figures showing that more than 2,000 sex crimes in UK care homes were reported to them. Some of the suspected victims, who lacked mental capacity, had

dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. The data does not identify the alleged perpetrators, but experts say they could be carehome employees or other residents. There are more than 450 nursing and residential homes in Northern Ireland, providing places for up to 16,000 elderly people. Linda Robinson, Age NI Chief Executive, told Good Morning Ulster it was important that “people feel safe to report” abuse cases. “It is 70 people too many that have been the subject of abuse,” she said. “The other side of that coin is there are 70 people who have been courageous and come forward … their families have come forward. “There has been a process put in place to keep those individuals safe. We need to enable people to be able to report safely in their own environment.”

Drug cops hit sport cheats SPAIN’S National Police have dismantled a group hell-bent on supplying banned substances to people involved in a variety of sports.

The organisation had a distribution network through the owner of a nutrition store and several gyms in the Asturias region. In addition to providing illegal anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs, group members also offered growthenhancement treatments extracted from healthy athletes, which were then injected into the joints and tendons of others. The police probe was the follow-on from an earlier inquiry into a number of Olympians, who were suspected of using illegal drugs to enhance performance. It led to a dentist, who, it seemed, was offering to repair in-

juries with a process he referred to as “autologous transfusion”, which was definitely illegal, especially as he wasn’t a doctor! Further investigation led the officers to another man who served in the Guardia Civil. He was acting with users in gyms around Asturias with drugs, either imported from the UK or obtained from pharmacies using prescriptions supplied by the dentist. In addition to these sport-enhancing drugs, it transpired that those involved were also selling hard drugs, such as cocaine. Once all gang members operating this scheme had been identified, the National Police moved in and arrested a dozen of them. In addition, they seized 110,000 doses of enhancement drugs covering 85 varieties, as well as four guns, 5,000 euros in cash, 12 kilos of hashish and 30 grams of cocaine.

Mr Field was the MP who led demands for Sir Philip Green to plug a vast hole in the BHS pension scheme, The Matthews’ deal, known as a pre-pack administration - under which a buyer is lined up to take on a company’s assets, but without liabilities such as its pension deficit - was expected to be finalised soon, according to City sources. It involves Mr Boparan’s private vehicle acquiring the Bernard Matthews assets, before they are integrated into 2 Sisters Food Group, his broader poultry empire. Administrator Deloitte is understood to have struck a deal, preserving all 2,000 jobs at the Norfolk-based company. But the poultry-producer’s pension liabilities will pass to the Pension Protection Fund (PPF), which would mean hundreds of current and former employees at Bernard Matthews face having their retirement payments cut. Matthews’ defined benefit scheme has a deficit of about £16m and around 750 members, although these numbers have not been not confirmed by the company or current owner Rutland Partners, a private-equity investor. Rutland and 2 Sisters both declined to comment.

Under PPF rules, existing pensioners would not see their payments change, but they could see reductions to future increases. And members yet to retire will see their payouts discounted by 10%. Mr Field said: “The new employer must not be allowed to get away with dumping the Bernard Matthews pension scheme into which workers have paid. “The Pensions Regulator needs to act robustly and quickly, to stop such activities being mimicked by other asset buyers who wish to dump pension liabilities. “We cannot have firms changing ownership at the price of pensions being dumped with the Pension Protection Fund. “Such dumping involves promises being broken, and the cuts in benefit that result.” A Pensions Regulator spokesman declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding Matthews’ impending, pre-pack administration. But he said further investigations could be warranted when schemes are passed to the PPF. He added: “The trustees and/or the PPF

may alert us if they become aware of circumstances that merit further consideration of the use of our moral hazard powers. And, again, in those circumstances, we may decide to open an investigation.” The Bernard Matthews company, known for its “Bootiful” advertising catchphrase, has been loss-making for years. An insider said Boparan had proposed a deal to Rutland that would have involved him taking on Matthews’ pension liabilities - preventing the scheme from passing to the PPF. But it would have required the current owner writing off millions of pounds in loan notes, a proposal said to have been unacceptable to Rutland. Bernard Matthews, which was put up for sale in June, is named after its founder, who, in 1950, set up the business by buying 20 eggs and a second-hand incubator. The dozen turkeys which hatched were sold to a local farmer for the equivalent of £9 in today’s money. The company has grown substantially

since then, and now operates across 50 farms and breeds, raises and processes more than seven million turkeys in the UK annually. But its financial fortunes have fluctuated, and the company has been dogged by persistent speculation about its future, as well as criticism from the likes of Jamie Oliver, about the nutritional content of its Turkey Twizzler products. In July, it announced the sale of its German subsidiary for £12m in an attempt to reduce debt The 2015 accounts show that in the year to 28th June, sales fell to £276.8m from £306.8m during the previous 12 months. It made an operating loss last year of close to £1m, and its directors said that investors, including Rutland, had injected an additional £10m of funding in August 2015. A PPF spokesman said: “We can’t comment on the circumstances of this company. In the event of an insolvency event at a company with an eligible pension scheme, members can be reassured that we are there to protect them.”

Never too hot to work By Mariano Zunino Siri

IT’S not easy working in Tenerife at times. The hot weather can make it hard to concentrate and do your job properly, especially in summertime when the heat can really take it’s toll.

But where do you stand in the workplace when it comes to rights in, say, a hot office? These type of conditions are regulated in the Law of Prevention of Labour Risks - the discipline that tries to promote the safety and health of workers by means of the identification, evaluation and control of hazards and risks related to the job environment. This mainly covers the

measures to promote the development of activities to prevent work risks. In essence, “Labour risks” under Spanish law are the possibilities of a worker suffering an accident, illness or even long-term health problems and death, linked to a job or a workplace. The Law 31/1995 of Prevention of Labour

Risks is the one that “determines the basic body of guarantees and responsibilities needed to establish a standard level of protection of towards workers’ health against the risks coming from the working conditions. This sets out a coherent, co-ordinated and effective prevention of such risks.”

The Royal Decree 1299/2006 frames all professional hazards, such as those caused by psychological, physical, geographical and other factors. It incorporates the EU recommendation in 2003, which emphasised the need to draft two lists: one enumerating occupational illnesses,

and the other containing illnesses that appear to be work-related. Now the complicated bit. These are divided into six groups, which cover most eventualities. And some work-related medical situations can fall into more than one category. In addition, there are

some work/labour accident laws, such as the ones covering human error, or the rights when your work involves travelling. Each prevention law evaluates the risks of every sector, the work place and type of work. It has guidelines which aims to minimise the accidents and work-place illness. The Workplace Laws are definitive, but they also are set up to encourage risk-avoidance. When it comes to temperatures, under European and, thus, Spanish Law, there is no minimum or maximum temperature limit. Unions in different countries have tried to get a law that has a minimum temperature of 13 degrees Celsius, and a maximum of 27 Celsius. But at the moment, it is just an idea. Ambulance

Don't Miss...

Tuesday 27 September, BBC1, 21.00 Ambulance is an observational documentary series that brings an unprecedented insight into Britain’s largest ambulance service, the London Ambulance Service. They need to be ready to help the 8.6 million people of London because when the most serious emergencies strike, they have only eight minutes to respond. With calls doubling in number over the past 10 years, the nerve centre of the service takes over 5000 calls a day and has to work out who needs an ambulance quickest, or whether they need one at all. With unprecedented access to the high pressured control room, as well as the crews out on the streets, each episode provides an honest 360 degree snapshot of the service, which was last year put into special measures. This takes the series beyond the flashing blue light stories, to reveal for the first time the dilemmas faced by those who allocate the ambulance - with only 400 ambulance crews on shift - as they have to bump patients down the queue to prioritise the sickest; the very real impact of time-wasters and frequent callers; and the ever-present threat that a major incident with multiple casualties is just a single 999 call away. An ordinary day for the London Ambulance Service means dozens of car crashes, overdoses, suicide attempts and - statistically - 28 cardiac arrests, where every second can make the difference between life and death. By 11am, seven cardiac arrests have come in, and now there are two more people fighting for their lives. As one crew battles through London traffic, knowing seconds and minutes can affect the outcome of a dad of two’s heart attack, across the city another crew face a difficult decision - whether to stop resuscitation of their patient knowing full-well the impact it will have on the family. The brain of the ambulance service is the control room, and when a number of stabbings, suicide attempts and a double shooting flood the 999 phone lines simultaneously, they threaten to overwhelm the service. A highly-skilled Advanced Paramedic has barely finished with a double shooting before he’s called to a man who has fallen from a sky scraper. In the control room they’re running short of ambulances and they know the next call could be a major incident needing dozens of crews. When there’s an unexpected spike in 999 calls far outstripping the number of ambulances available, drastic action has to be taken, and some emergency callers have to be told the ambulance can’t come to them while the service prioritise reaching those in most urgent need who maybe fighting for their lives. Multiple calls about an explosion in a flat come in, heralding their worst fear, and the whole of the London Ambulance Service now has to step up.

The X Factor ITV1, 20.00

Tonight sees the competition reach a new level as the dramatic Six Chair Challenge returns, promising some amazing performances and some tough decisions for the judges, as they must each choose the final six acts they will take through to Judges’ Houses. In the first of two special Six Chair Challenge episodes the stakes are high as, for the first time in the competition, the acts perform live in front of an audience. Their judge then has to decide, right there and then, if they want the act to take one of the six seats on stage, each one representing a place in the next stage of the competition. However, even if they win a seat, the contestants face an anxious wait as no one is safe until the last person in each category has sung. Each judge is able to change their mind at any point swapping an act already through with someone else who comes on and out-performs them. Who will have what it takes to keep hold of their seat and be one step closer to a coveted place in the lives shows?

Ninja Warrior UK ITV1, 17:10

This week, 25-year-old professional climber Leah Crane from Cumbria attempts the course. Leah currently travels the world competing in bouldering championships but how does she fare when faced with the Warped Wall? Scaffolder John Morris from Edinburgh is hoping his experience as a bodybuilder is going to help him earn a coveted place in the semi-finals.

S u n day

Channel 4, 21:00

As part of this year’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign, Bear Grylls abandons 10 celebrities on an uninhabited island in the Pacific. The celebrities now have fire and water, but after four gruelling days, they still haven’t eaten a single proper meal, and rugby ace Thom Evans is struggling. The Hotel’s Mark Jenkins is outraged when he finds their president Dom Joly taking a nap, while the others are busy hunting. To add to the islanders’ woes, a nasty fishing accident leaves TOWIE’s Lydia Bright in excruciating pain. Mark finally decides to take action, launching a coup against Dom’s lacklustre leadership. But will it be in time to save Thom?

Working closely with French aeronautical engineer Stéphane Rousson, Guy plans to sit on a ‘flying bicycle’ suspended beneath a helium-filled balloon the size of a bus, with every pedal stroke spinning two propellers. Guy learns to fly indoors, at the historic Cardington Hangars in Bedfordshire, the former factory where some of the world’s biggest flying machines were created. He also takes a fast jet pilot course with the British military elite so that he knows what to do if he has to crash land. Taking off from Kent, Guy has to cover 24 miles over the busiest shipping lane in the world to reach the French coast: a journey that might take eight hours if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction.

The Big Fat Quiz of Everything is back for a second helping with quizmaster Jimmy Carr presiding over proceedings as Jonathan Ross, Noel Fielding, Richard Ayoade, Aisling Bea, Adam Buxton and Rob Beckett fiercely battle it out for the Big Fat Quiz crown. Jimmy asks questions from the last 100,000 years of human history, giving the unique Big Fat Quiz spin on everything from science to music, food and drink to crime and punishment, and TV to politics, with a dollop of celebrity thrown in for good measure. As usual, Jimmy will be ably assisted by Big Fat Quiz favourites Jon Snow, the children of Mitchell Brook Primary School and Joey Essex, as well as a whole host of famous question setters, and a Mariachi band who drop by to liven up the party. So, what was in Pandora’s Box? What did President Bush ban from the White House?

One Street, one extraordinary person and one huge sale. Paul Martin, with the help of experts Danny Sebastian, Irina Aggrey and Tim Weeks, will raise cash for a neighbour or friend who has helped others. It’s payback time for the unsung hero, as Paul and his team scour the area for donations to sell at his pop up auction right in the very street where they live. The idea is to keep it a secret from them but will Paul and his team get rumbled? Paul knocks on doors of friends and neighbours to tell them about the auction and he is invited in to rummage in garages and garden sheds to look for donations - anything from bikes to 18th century buttons. Will the team reach their donation target? All will be revealed on the street as Paul auctions off the items and then steps down off of his rostrum to surprise the unsuspecting recipient.

On Assignment ITV1, 22.40

Fronted by Rageh Omaar, ITV News’s award-winning team of specialist journalists contribute indepth reports from around the world and the stories behind the headlines. The following reports will air in this programme: AUSTRIA – James Mates Could Austria become the first European country since World War II to democratically elect a far-right president? The polls show Norbert Hofer neck-and-neck with progressive opponent Alexander Van Der Bellen, who won the presidential election in May by a slim margin. Hofer’s hopes have been reignited after the country’s constitutional court decided to annul the election outcome after irregularities in the process were revealed and has now set a re-run for November. TANZANIA – John Ray In Tanzania on Africa’s east coast, criminal gangs are increasingly using explosives to stun and kill fish - allowing easy collection and larger hauls. Yet their methods are having a devastating effect on the local ecosystem and entail potentially fatal consequences for the fishermen involved. Records reveal that there have been 8,700 explosions in just 14 months, resulting in thousands of metres of East Africa’s most pristine coral reefs being destroyed. ESTONIA: SPLIT BY A BORDER - Simon Harris The Seto people in South East Estonia are one of the last folk cultures in Europe and are fighting to preserve their unique way of life. Simon Harris visits them on one of their most important religious holidays where they feast on the graves of their ancestors. Dressed in brightly coloured clothes, the Setos perform their traditional polyphonic songs, a tradition so prized it’s protected by UNESCO. But the Seto culture is under threat as the border with Russia runs directly through their homeland, splitting their community and forcing many Setos to disperse across Estonia.

Parking Wars ITV1, 20:00

Documentary series following civil enforcement officers. This week, the programme visits Romford, where tough-talking Kam shows why she needs to be fearless, even after only a year in the job. Meanwhile in Wiltshire, where celebrations for the summer solstice are gearing up at Stonehenge, one person is royally put out upon learning that parking charges are to be introduced. The episode also goes behind the scenes at three parking ticket appeals, where both appellants and adjudicators prepare for parking court, including Welsh ex-teacher William who has set up a cunning campaign against the council that issued him a ticket. And there is chaos on the streets of Matlock when 6,000 bikers race into town to roar at the suggestion of a parking fee. Will the leathers be coming off for a fight?

National Treasure Channel 4, 21:00

Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters, Andrea Riseborough and Tim McInnerny star in Jack Thorne’s four-part drama. Paul and his family have to deal with the pressure of the mounting allegations against him. Dee confronts her former babysitter, Christina, now one of Paul’s accusers. Marie is rattled to discover she was away on the nights Paul is accused of assaulting Christina, and Paul gives a radio interview, determined to put his side of the story. It backfires, angering his solicitor and leading to a story in the papers about Dee, her addiction and her history of suicide attempts. Dee re-examines her own personal problems in light of the allegations being made about Paul. As Paul and Marie celebrate her birthday, Dee wonders if she’s repressed far more about her dad than she’s prepared to admit. Can she trust her own memories?

Conviction BBC2, 21:00

Murder at the Station. Documentary following a team of experts as they investigate whether evidence exists that could challenge the conviction of a man in prison for a murder he denies. Every year, over 500 people in the UK are convicted of murder. A guilty verdict can only be challenged if new evidence comes to light - and less than 1% of cases are ever overturned. Inside Justice is a specialist charity led by Louise Shorter, supported by a panel of criminal lawyers, ex-police officers and forensics experts who offer assistance to prisoners who are protesting their innocence. Louise looks for evidence that could present grounds to bring an appeal and ultimately overturn the conviction of a Southampton man in prison for the murder of his secret lover.

Game of Thrones is crowned best of all Game of Thrones has made TV history by becoming the most decorated fictional show at the Emmy Awards since the prestigious event began in 1949.

It was based on George RR Martin’s novels and was named Best Drama Series, while picking up more honours for outstanding writing and directing. Its 12 awards at this year’s bash in Los Angeles included another nine in technical categories. That magnificent haul takes the drama’s overall total to 38 gongs, beating Frasier’s previous record by one. Show-runner David Benioff told reporters: “We love Frasier and he had a long run, and we’re sure someone will come along and take it from us.

GRIME artist Skepta beat the late David Bowie to the Mercury Prize, the UK’s most prestigious music award, at London’s Eventim Apollo, in Hammersmith.

The north Londonborn singer won the award - established in 1992 - and the £25,000 prize for his fourth studio album Konnichiwa at the annual ceremony. The album, released on Skepta’s Boy Better Know record label, which he co-founded with his brother, JME, in 2005, was described by industry figures as “confident, funny, clever, scary, personal and political”. He beat bookies’ favourite Bowie, who would have become the first posthumous winner for his Blackstar album.

We just hope it doesn’t happen until we’re all dead!” Yet Game of Thrones missed out in the acting categories, despite three of its stars - Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams - being hotlytipped in the Best Supporting Actress category. That award went to Dame Maggie Smith for her performance as the Dowager Countess Violet Crawley in the final series of Downton Abbey. It was her third gong for the role, although she was not present at the ceremony. Meanwhile, the presidential campaign made its presence felt at the glitzy event. Actress Julia LouisDreyfus, accepting her fifth consecutive Best Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy for Veep, lamented jokingly that real politics was beginning to resemble the Washington world at which her

comedy series pokes fun. “Our show started out as political satire, but now it feels like a sober documentary,” she said. And she promised to rebuild the wall between comedy and politics and “make Mexico pay for it”. Donald Trump was a featured player at the Emmys, with host Jimmy Kimmel pointing out the man in the audience, who made

the tycoon a TV star. “Thanks to Mark Burnett, we don’t have to watch reality shows any more, because we’re living them,” said Kimmel. Burnett cast Trump in The Apprentice the hit series which gave him the catchphrase “You’re Fired” and a larger public profile. Former Republican candidate Jeb

Bush made an appearance in Kimmel’s opening comedy skit, and Hillary Clinton tweeted “congratulations” to her impersonator, Kate McKinnon, of Saturday Night Live, who won Best Supporting Actress in a comedy. British comedian John Oliver won the oOutstanding Variety Talk Series award for Last Week To-

night, beating James Corden’s Late, Late Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The People v OJ Simpson, a dramatic retelling of the American Football star’s murder trial, was named Best Limited Series, and it also earned awards for stars Courtney B Vance, Sterling K Brown and Sarah Paulson.

Skepta’s grime is genuine gold

Skepta said: “For everyone who knows what it takes to put an album together, it’s so much more than making the music … everyone who was there

for me when I was going through depressed times, we just did this for us. But the love is very appreciated.” He added: “I wouldn’t say it’s a grime revo-

lution - this is a really good time for grime. But I think this is a revolution for freedom - and not just in music. “So many people are

getting up by themselves, making things work online, using the same acumen as if you were working for a big company - to just do it yourself!” Blackstar, which explored the themes of illness, death and heaven, was, poignantly, released on Bowie’s 69th birthday in January - just two days before he died from cancer. Judge Jarvis Cocker, who won a Mercury Prize with his band Pulp in 1996, said the choice came down to Bowie or Skepta. He said the panel decided that “if Bowie were looking down”, he would want Skepta to win. Other artists vying for

the prize were Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool - the fifth time they had been nominated; Laura Mvula’s The Dreaming; Bat For Lashes’ The Bride; The 1975s I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It; Jamie Woon’s Making Time; Kano’s Made In The Manor; Michael Kiwanuk’s Love & Hate; the Savage’s Adore Life; Channel The Spirits, by The Comet Is Coming, and Anohni’s Hopelessness. A planned Bowie tribute featured a performance of his track Lazarus, by Dexter star Michael C Hall, who launches a Bowie stage production in London next month.

Motoring

By Emma at Motorworld

WE have all done it … driven around and around, looking for a place to park. And then we spot a car reversing from a marked-out space or parallel spot and think, “okay, I’ll go for that”.

But here in Tenerife, it’s never quite that simple, is it? Here’s a tale about a gentleman, an experienced driver and longstanding resident of the Island, who parked legally. Here’s what occurred next. He was driving a camper van and was, naturally, looking for a rather large spot to park safely and correctly. He found one and drove into it with the front of his vehicle facing the kerb. He engaged his hand-brake

23rd September - 29th September 2016

Watch where you park and left his vehicle, safe in the knowledge that all would be well on his return. When he returned, all was indeed well! He checked his mirrors and also checked visually, before starting to reverse out. Then, BANG! He was shocked, and wondered where the noise had come from. He looked around in his mirrors and saw nothing astray. So he got out the vehicle and, tucked in at the rear of his vehicle, was a DOUBLE-PARKED CAR, which, of course he had struck. His camper van was not damaged, but there was, of course, damage to the other vehicle, whose owner was most unhappy. The normal course of events would have been to exchange insurance details, fill out the accident-claim forms and let the insurers do battle, if necessary. But curiously, the miscreant driver not only blamed the gentleman reversing but also called the police! They arrived and

promptly laid the blame firmly on the camper van driver. The police completed their paperwork and the bemused gentleman went on his way. He submitted his claim form correctly to his insurers, which was his legal obligation, though not actually making a claim. Many years later,

he has still heard nothing from the insurance company! He can only assume his insurance company took the correct action and laid the fault on the doubleparked driver. But it just goes to show that calling the police is not always in your best interests when no one is hurt.

If an accident is your fault, especially when you have done something illegal such as this, then just accept your failings and do the right thing. There is a moral to this story in that I’d like to help Canarian Weekly clients park safely and legally, with the following advice:

Molly, Elaine and Alberto opened Molly’s on the 1st August. Molly was only 3 weeks old when Elaine rescued her and she has been by Elaine’s side ever since. Molly is a right character and greets all the clients when they visit, usually with a sloppy kiss. Elaine has always had animals in her life from a very young age. She used to help out at her local Vets in the school holidays as a volunteer and was always her dream to one day open her own Veterinary clinic.

Since moving to Tenerife many years ago, she has carried on her love for animals by helping Live Arico and Dogs Welfare , and also rescued stray dogs off the streets by herself., taking them into her home and giving them the love and care they need to be able to be adopted into loving and safe family environments. Elaine is on Reception, picking up and delivering animals from their homes to the clinic and back, plus helping out Alberto when necessary. So she is very busy but enjoys every minute. Alberto knew as a child he would work with animals, he always used to watch animal documentaries and found them fascinating and was always outside playing with his neighbours pets, not with bikes and toys Alberto studied at Córdoba University and since qualifying as a vet he has increased his knowledge by attending more courses. We feel very lucky to have Alberto as part of our team, he has been with us since day one and is just as passionate about Fur Babies as we are.

TO have your cat spayed or castrated will be one of the biggest decisions you make regarding its health and welfare - and that of other cats. The over-populated cat problem here in Tenerife is devastating, with thousands walking - some even dying on the streets because there just aren’t enough homes. Some people believe that as long as they keep their cats indoors, there’s no risk in letting them remain “intact”. But they’re wrong because there are also health concerns and behavioural implications, and you’re dooming your cat to a life of frustration, and being at the mercy of hormones. Intact male cats will

spray. They are on a mission to roam, increase their territory, find a mate and fight competitors. If you have indoor cat, that behaviour will be directed at companion cats, and the spraying will be directed at your furniture and belongings. And don’t assume because your cat lives exclusively indoors, he won’t contribute to over-population, because they escape from their homes every day. And cat fights often lead to them getting abscesses because their teeth are so sharp. Life for an unspayed, adult female cat is filled with stress, and she will attract every intact male around.

So, there is simply no excuse for not spaying or castrating your cat. If budget is a concern, contact Cats Welfare. Fund-raiser success Lots of food donations, together with a total of 306.82 euros, came our way last Saturday from the tables we had at Koala Sur, Costa Adeje, and Las Chafiras. The Crown restaurant, Valle San Lorenzo

Treated like royalty!

WE’VE just had the pleasure of experiencing a genuine, goodfood, fun-night family meal at The Crown, in Valle San Lorenzo.

It was taken over and refurbished by Debbie and Lee five weeks ago and is definitely making its mark. With American-style booths, live music (and singer), pool tables and darts boards, there is something for everyone. The couple offer a large, varied menu, including their renowned, 50cm family pizza. Also on offer are burgers, steaks, ribs, salads, fish & chips, as

well as daily specials, such as beef stroganoff or roasted pig. We sat down and were served by Selina, one of their extremely friendly waitresses. For starters, we went for Garlic bread with tomato & cheese, Garlic mushrooms and baked Camembert cheese. The little ones went for a kids’ meal of home-made Chicken breast goujons, chips, drinks, ice cream. AND it included a toy, so they were more than happy. The Crown even supplies fully-padded highchairs for infants. For mains, we decided on the Shoulder of Lamb, Grilled King Prawns and a Prawn Kebab. The lamb, so tender it practically

fell off the bone, was served with pan-fried peppers and onions, together with thickcut chips. The grilled King Prawns and the Kebab both came with a huge portion of juicy, flavoursome prawns - not just your usual three or four either - on a bed of onionroast potatoes, or on a skewer for the kebab - with fresh veg and a spicy side-sauce. As the kids had their ice creams, it simply wouldn’t have been right not to treat ourselves to a cheeky tiramisu for dessert. Drinks-wise, the restaurant has a selection of wines, which can be bought by the bottle or glass, as well as some rather potent cocktails.

Chef Goran, along with bar staff Jay and Jamie, really work well together to cater to any needs or requirements customers might have. The Crown, which features quiz nights, live music, darts and pool leagues, also caters for parties or events. It is open from 4pm until Midnight, six days a week (closed on Mondays). And watch out for the Sunday dinners, which are coming soon! The restaurant can be found on the left-hand side of the main road, heading up towards Valle San Lorenzo from the Cabo Blanco/ Buzanada roundabout.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

By Carl Pattison

HAIR is art, hair is science, hair is flair, and, above all else, it’s experience.

I speak for many fellow hairdressers - here in Tenerife - that, sometimes, our skills go unnoticed, our talents are not appreciated, and the general public begrudge paying for quality, even though they demand it. It can take 2-5 years to train and study as a stylist in the UK (over here, it takes 10 months). We

23rd September - 29th September 2016

go through many forms of study, including Theory of Hair, Science of Hair - and practicals. Years can be spent becoming a senior stylist. You may be over 25 before you are classed as “fully-qualified”. We spend hours and hours practising our trade, returning to refresh our skills, and always looking out for the next “hair-fashion”. This is so that you, the client, can be right-ontrend with your styling

needs, and not be left in the dark ages with your hairstyle. Most of us take great pride in what we do. We would rather send out quality work from the salon, than just do any type of hairdressing to get money in the cash register. Listen to our free advice, respect the opinions we give you, and you will have a hairfriend for many years. I know that, sometimes, there are dozens of opinions in salons. But, trust me, your stylist has your best hairinterests at heart. Give stylists and salons the respect they deserve for all the experience they have attained over the years, and let them show you what creativity they have in their hands.

JUST WHAT’S GOING ON DOWN UNDER? By Carl Pattison

THEY’RE either important to you, or you just throw on any old pair … yes, I talking men’s underwear!

Once a forbidden subject, now it’s just as important as what a guy puts over them. From Calvin Klein, who brought men’s underwear to the forefront, to your highstreet store which sells the copies, male undergarments are big business. Gone are the days when underwear was used, but not seen. Men now want you to notice what they are wearing, and, most importantly, what names they are wearing, too. Versace, D&G and

Armani sell just as much underwear as they do clothing … it’s a multimillion-dollar industry. So what style do you choose from what’s available? Most guys go for the trunk variety, which are larger than briefs but more fitted than boxers. They tend to be more of a snugger fit, and don’t show through trousers, as do their “brief-style” counterparts. These give more freedom to the legs, but they can be constrict-

ing. Boxers come and go out of fashion. At the moment, they are not too popular, because, over the last few years, guys’ trousers have been tighter. It’s all down to personal taste and comfort. It’s not really what’s “in”, but what you feel better in. Invest in quality underwear, guys, and you will have it for years. A man can look fashionable on the outside, but this has to follow on to the underwear as well … don’t spoil the look!

By Miruna Voicu IT is well known that colour affects mood ... and that certain colours can calm, while others excite, etc.

For example, the Green Room in a TV studio is to calm guests, and many hospitals and waiting rooms will be decorated in the colour of nature. On the other hand, vibrant-red is the colour of blood, anger and love, which is why fastfood restaurants are keen on this shade. It stimulates young people to eat their food - and get out of there quickly! Colour in your home is important because of the effect you wish to achieve. Climate also has a lot to do with this because you can get away with brighter, more summery colours

Special, seasonal effects

than you would, say, in the UK. And a blue that might appear cold and washed-out there can be vibrant and tropical in the different light here. Lots of decorating magazines will be writing about the move from Summer to Autumn now, suggesting you redecorate your home accordingly, although I’ve never known anyone who has actually done that! Our seasons in Tenerife are not so clearly defined, but, nevertheless, it’s nice to be able to change your colour scheme now and again. Our climate means that it is warm most of the year, but you can still achieve that “cozy” feeling through colour. The answer is, of course, to have the main part of your home decorated in neutral colours, such as beiges, browns or greys, for example, and then spice it up

with moveable objects like cushions, pictures and ornaments. It means that in the summer, you might have hot, tropical and acidic colours, changing to autumnal bronzes and terracottas in the cooler months and even some Christmas-inspired tones later in the year. And the beauty of this, of course, is that it can be achieved at little cost … a few cushions, a colour co-ordinated picture or ornament, and your home can be transformed. You can achieve your neutral base by reupholstering or covering your sofa with a “plain” colour, and changing your bedspreads and curtains accordingly to tie in with the scheme. Then get creative with your “pops” of colour to go with the season! All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.

The Bookie cleans up! THE Direct Telecom Pool League is fiercely competitive, but Tuesday nights are not just about winning a few frames. It’s very much a social league, and lifelong friendships have been forged.

As have some brilliant nicknames. The league has spawned Fritzel, Penguin, The Ripper and, recently, the Fluke, to name just four. And now we add The Bookie! He played his first match of the season for Palms A on Tuesday and boy, did he make his, erm, Mark! He won all three of his games against Terrace Roosters to give Palms A the platform for victory. The Bookie, well-supported by his teammates, inspired a comfortable 8-4 win, despite Scudz being bang in form for the visitors. Last week, I mentioned that it was a race for second spot in Division One this year because defending champions Gaffers A are proving to be too strong. This week saw them away against Palms Elite, and it was yet another fairly straightforward fixture. The frams were close enough close, but when Gaffers A raced into a 6-0 lead it was all over as a contest, Palms Elite managed to register a couple of dead rubbers to give the 7-5 scoreline a bit of respectability, but Gaffers A were full value for all the points. Tenerife Hammers A really wanted to mount a serious title challenge this season, but they have been off the pace. However, with results

this week going their way, they have moved into second spot. Gaffers B played host to them this week and, with the form they have been showing, they fancied their chances. But it was just one of those nights for the home team, despite putting in a decent performance, because the blacks were just not dropping. Hammers A had the wind in their sails as they picked up a decent three points. Phoenix Potters, who made a good start to the season, were sitting in second spot. But they had their wings clipped this week by Treehouse A. It started as a cagey affair, with the Potters taking the opening two frames. But the two Marks took the next two to level the score. Treehouse then made home advantage count as they took session two 3-1 for a slender 5-3 lead. The Potters were not done, though, as Geoff and Jamie quickly made it 5-5, and the old boys sensed a comeback. But it wasn’t to be because Mark D and Scott dragged Treehouse A over the winning line. Bluebell A, who haven’t had a great start to the season knew they had a tricky home game against Rewind Rewired. Things didn’t start well for them as Valeri and Gary put the visitors into an early lead. But Mucker and Mick stood strong for Bluebell A to keep the scores level. Tim restored Rewired’s lead, but two good frames from Colin and Mucker put the home team ahead. This was turning into a real to-and-fro match as Rewired won the next two. It was only going to end one way and,

eventually, the points were shared, Rewind A fared better than their barmates against Exiles A as they secured their second win of the season. It has been a difficult start to the season for the Puerto Colon team, but their French Connection has been a revelation and they were again in fine form. The visitors are a difficult team to play against, and the early games were evenlymatched, Rewind A had home advantage, though, and used it to get themselves in front. Once there, they saw the game out and took three muchneeded points. Terrace Bantams have had a tough couple of matches, having just played Gaffers A and Tenerife Hammers A, and they were hoping to get back to winning ways at home against Dreamers A. But the problem they have is that they seem

to beat themselves In the first couple of frames, they contrived to lose from winning positions, and, before they knew it, they were 4-0 down. Marky P was offform and Mal hasn’t played well for weeks, and this contributed to more frame losses. Dreamers A were in decent form and were quite happy to benefit from the home team’s mistakes as they continued to put frames on the board, eventually taking the points. In Division Two, Picasso’s A kept up their fine start, despite captain Fran not being about. Steve Rae deputised as they faced Treehouse B in a home fixture. The visitors are bottom of the league, yet they are running teams close every week and it is surely only a matter of time before the wins come. Picasso’s, who are strong at home, just maintained control to

win. James Hammers C, hanging on to Picasso’s coat-tails in second spot, continued to keep the pressure on with a win over Bluebell B. As captain Tony Macaroni said: “It was nip-and-tuck all the way, with some nice tactical games and some great potting.” They were also looking to beat an unwelcome league record as Ken was on target to top his previous total of 31 minutes for a frame. Unfortunately, he came up short by six minutes! Well, they think it was, but everybody had dropped off! Yates Bar, sitting just behind them in third, racked up yet another win this week away from home against Exiles B. They got off to a decent start and led 4 -2 at the halfway stage. Lee, the Yates captain, took the next, only for Raul to come back for Exiles B. Lee led off in the final session and recorded another victory, to be followed by Terry and Biggie wins, and the points belonged to Yates Bar. Terry is showing good form for the

Starco boys, with six from six in his last two appearances. The Crown are also keeping tabs with the leaders after racking up another win, this time against Splash Bar. It was close across the first four frames, and there was nothing to choose between the sides. But the home team had a better middle session and led 5-3, only for Splash Bar’s Craig to bring it back to 5-4. That was as good as it got for the visitors, though, as The Crown picked off the final three frames - and points were theirs, with John again winning three games. Hoppys A played host to Palms Rebels, who were riding high after an unlikely victory the previous week against high-flying James Hammers C. Unfortunately they were bought back down to earth with a bang as the home side proved too strong. Hoppys took the early frames, and, once in front, they never looked back. They controlled the match and soon wrapped up the points.

Chuckers chin Phoenix! HAVING taken 23 points from the 24 available in their last three matches, Phoenix Bar’s trip to Spear Chuckers may have seemed like a walk in the park.

But if nothing else, this league can be unpredictable at times, and not many would have bet on a Spear Chuckers’ win. But, with maximums from Rob and Tommo, Phoenix’s good run was brought to an abrupt halt as the Chuckers ran out 5-3 winners. Phoenix will, of course, point out that neither Mitch nor Johnny made the trip, but it was a fine performance by the Chuckers nevertheless. They meet again this week, in Los Abrigos! Richard, with his 12th maximum for Pas O Nadas A, has sent us searching through

the record books as he chases the trophy for the most 180s in a season - any season! The latest came during his side’s 6-2 victory over Sandys Reborn. Ramon, also on the maximum trail, notched his first for Sandys International, although he didn’t get much help as his team shipped seven points against Ourplace Playboys. It had been said that the Division 2 title was anyone’s to win this term … but what do I know? It now looks as though we have a clear favourite after The Tavern put seven past the Playgirls to open up an 11-point gap with a game in hand. Who will catch them? Maybe not secondplace Sundowners. They were on the end of a 5-3 defeat at Emerald Lounge ,which moved the green men above Rood, who also lost 5-3, at Clouseaus. Third-place Picassos have two games

to sixth, while Bar Leones went up a few places after whitewashing Marilyns B. As the fixtures unravel, Palms Pool Bar look certain to start climbing the table. Although in 11th spot, they are unbeaten and enjoyed a comfortable 6-2 win over Pas O Nadas B.

Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League

New signings are tops

IT seems as though this Premier League season could turn out to be the most entertaining yet. But it doesn’t make it easy for all the Oasis Fm Fantasy League managers to predict results, or pick out star players. Most managers have selected players who are already established within the league, as opposed to picking club’s new signings. Yet the new signings seem to be making the early running in terms of pointscoring. There were some stand-out results again, but they don’t always guarantee high points for the players, so this week’s high point-scoring team feature a real

mixed bag. Leicester, Everton and Man City led the way, with two players for each club. The rest came from Hull, Watford, West Brom, Crystal Palace and Arsenal, with Nacer Chadli as the outstanding player, gleaning 21 points for West Brom. We had a change at the top of the Oasis Fm Fantasy League, with two new teams moving into the top spots. Ian Barr, Barrstards took the No.1 position, but by three points only from Chris Ayliffe’s Addickted team, who scored just shy of 100 points. That total was achieved by six players in his team, who all re-

turned double figures, so he owes thanks to Coleman, Payet, De Bruyne, Sterling, Slimani and Lukaku.

The team of the week broke the 100-point barrier, so a huge hat-tip to Tony Smith’s Macaroni’s Hammers, who

managed 102 points. He also had high scorers in Payet, Sterling, Capoue and Lukaku, but his leading player was Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, who secured him 20 points. He may regret us-

ing his bench boost, though, because the four players on his bench returned just nine points! A lesson, maybe, in how not to use your extra point-scoring options?

Midday joy! Almeria 0 CD Tenerife 1

By Roscoe THEY say that only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun. Well, Spanish footballers will tell you, they often make the high-noon burn as well. Normally the noon start is for the junior league. Tenerife had two years of them when they were in the third tier recently. These matches normally produce slow, possession-based football with few chances. Especially at this time of the year! And this match was no different. It was right up Tenerife’s street. Almeria normally play with a pacey forward line, but they must have missed their alarm clocks as they were still in their beds for most of the match. Yes, it was sunny. Yes, it was hot. But this is Spain, and you have to account for that. Before the start, there was a nice look to the

match for Tenerife. Jose Marti, who is starting to get his side where he wants them, now has options all over the pitch. Vitolo, Sanz and Crosas controlled midfield, and Tenerife had as much possession as I can ever remember them having in an away match. They forced a host of corners and always looked the more likely to score. There is a bit of confidence in the team now. And when Tenerife forced a late winner, albeit by Ximo Navarro’s own-goal, you could see the team’s togetherness. Make no mistake, three straight wins is quite an achievement. It’s so much rosier in the garden, as a quick glance at the league table will show you. Goalie Dani Hernandez spoke for the whole team when he said: “That’s three wins - and two league wins in a row. It’s not easy to do that in this league. For me, it is another clean sheet as

well. The team are working well, and when that happens the results arrive. “Those victories are now in the bank. What we need now is the extra support of the fans at home. He added: “We have gained confidence, I hope they will also gain confidence. This team defends well. The figures show this. If we can start to turn our possession into more chances, this will lead to more goals and then wins.” Dani makes a good point about the defence. There is healthy competition for places as well, and, even though manager Jose Marti probably has a back-four in mind, the chopping and changing did not lead to a leaking of goals. Dani, who says the new outlook is down to the talent in the squad, added: “Maybe we have a bit better players this season. Everyone can step in, if needed. I think we are balanced and we are calm.

“If something goes wrong, or looks like it might, we know what to do. And we work on this every day.” By the time you read this Tenerife could actually be in the top five. A rare set of midweek matches means that Tenerife hosted Mallorca last night (Thursday). This is followed by Sunday’s trip to Mirandes, who are a funny side, capable of putting a good run together. They also have a habit of throwing a few moody matches. At the moment, they are going rather well. Last weekend’s 2-1 win at home against Rayo Vallecano caught the eye. This was after a good point at Real OviePosition

pion could walk again. But Mr Damm said the legendary 47-year-old still “cannot walk”. Bunte had quoted a source at the end of last year as saying that Schumacher could manage some steps with the help of therapists, and could raise an arm. At the time, Schumacher’s agent, Sabine Kehm, released a statement denying the story, saying: “Unfortunately,

we are forced by a recent press report to clarify that the assertion that Michael could move again is not true. “Such speculation is irresponsible, because, given the seriousness of his injuries, his privacy is very important. Unfortunately, they also give false hopes to many involved people.” Schumacher suffered a head injury in a skiing accident in France in 2013. He was placed

just once all season. In the Tercera Division, Canarian Section, the league is as tight as I can ever remember, Just two wins separating the top from 15th place. CD Marino still lead the way, last weekend securing a fine draw at Las Palmas B, who are the strongest side in the section. There was a fiery match in El Fraile as Ibarra and CD Tenerife B drew 0-0. A feisty contest spilled into the stands, and there were some nasty reports of a bit of “afters”. On the field tomorrow (Saturday), Tenerife B host Las Palmas B in what should be another tasty encounter.

Schumacher is unable to walk MICHAEL Schumacher’s lawyer has told a German court that the former Formula 1 world champion “cannot walk”, following a skiing injury, more that 2½ years ago. Felix Damm was detailing the extent of Schumacher’s injuries in a lawsuit against Bunte. The German magazine had reported last Christmas that the seven-time world cham-

do and a fine win over hard-to-beat Cadiz. Mirandes are also Tenerife’s B team, for those who are cheeky! They have Pedro Martin, Abdon Prats, Roberto Gutierrez, Jon Aurenetxe, Pau Cendros and Iker Guarrotxena in their ranks. Iker, in particular, has hit the ground running. In 20 games for Tenerife he scored once - against Mirandes, ironically - while for his new employers, he has three goals in five games. In other football news, Mensajero are still going okay in the third tier. Last weekend, they drew 1-1 with Fuenlabrada in a match they dominated. They have still lost

in a medically-induced coma for six months, before being transferred to his Switzerland home to continue his treatment. Little is known of Schumacher’s recovery because his family has protected his privacy stringently. In February, his former Ferrari boss, Luca di Montezemolo, said: “I have news, and, unfortunately, it is not good.”

Team news: Swansea’s Influential attacking midfielder Sigurdsson has yet to find his best form this season, while new signings Llorente and Baston haven’t registered a single league goal between them. Title favourites Man City have looked impressive under new manager Guardiola, disposing opponents comfortably thus far. Best bet: Man City to win 3-0 at 9/1

Stoke v West Brom

Form Stoke: LWLLLL West Brom: WLDDLW Head-to-head: It’s honours even between these two with three wins apiece. Team news: Manager Hughes, under immense pressure, is odds-on favourite to win the sack race this season, with Stoke looking all over the place in defence, the midfield extremely average at best, while the attack has barely created anything in the absence of key players Shaqiri and Afellay. Opponents West Brom have had a decent start to the season, despite disagreements and uncertainties among supporters about the boring but effective style of play of manager Pulis. Best bet: 1-1 draw at 7/1

Form Man Utd: WWLLLW Leicester: DWLWWL Head-to-head: United have won three, drawn two, and lost one of their last six games against Leicester. Team news: United’s Luke Shaw could be out after suffering an injury setback, while Anthony Martial is attempting to recover from a concussion. Phil Jones is also out, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan is set to return from a thigh injury. Foxes’ keeper Kasper Schmeichel is hoping to recover from a concussion in time, with Nampalys Mendy also set for a return. Matthew James is still sidelined though. Best bet: Man Utd to win 2-1 at 8/1

Bournemouth v Everton Form Bournemouth: LWDWLL Everton: WWWWWL Head-to-head: Everton have won two and drawn one of their three meetings with Bournemouth. West Ham v Southampton

Form West Ham: WLLLLW Southampton: LDLWWW Head-to-head: West Ham have won four and lost two against the Saints. Team news: Hammers appear to be struggling with complacency and a loss of direction, with the defence leaking plenty of goals, star player Payet yet to show up fully, and an array of new signings either injured or struggling to fit in. Southampton, with the departure of former key players like Pelle, Mane and Wanyama, are also stuck in the bottom half but at least have a better points tally, alongside a more positive outlook from recent performances. Best bet: Southampton to win 3-0 at 14/1

Sunderland v Crystal Palace

Form Sunderland: LWDLLW Crystal Palace: LWDWWL Head-to-head: Palace have won three, drawn one and lost two in the last six fixtures. Team news: Key Sunderland striker Defoe remains an influential figure, while exciting young signings like Januzaj and Denayer should improve the overall quality of the squad. Opponents Palace have looked resurgent since the international break, having recorded two good victories in succession, away at Middlesbrough and the recent demolition of Stoke. Manager Alan Pardew looks to have discovered a winning formula after Palace failed to win any of their opening three fixtures. Best bet: Palace to win 2-0 at 11/1

Burnley v Watford Form Burnley: DWDWLL Watford: LLWDLW Head-to-head: Burnley have won four and lost two in recent games against the Hornets. Team news: Burnley manager Dyche has already experienced a previous relegation with the club, but the team is mostly unchanged from that season and it remains to be seen if notable new signings Defour, Hendrick and Bamford can provide the fire needed to survive this time. Watford enter this fixture on a high after the classy but surprise victory over title contenders Manchester United, and an exciting comeback victory over West Ham, lifting the previously winless team into the top half of the table. Best bet: Watford to win 2-0 at 10/1
