TOURISTS TOASTING OUR PORT
TENERIFE’S position as leaders of tourism’s booming cruise-ship sector was presented brilliantly at the Seatrade Cruise Med event in Santa Cruz. That the capital city was chosen for the three-day trade and congress fair, staged at The Fairgrounds, spoke volumes. Continued on Page 3

Cruise experts go overboard for us
Continued from Front The colourful event attracted representatives from 153 leading ports, travel companies, leisure groups and support industries, which enhance the whole cruise experience. And next month’s opening of the port’s new passenger terminal building will further confirm that Santa Cruz is the place to float your boat. There was a strong UK presence, with Cruise Wales and Cruise Scotland flying their flags. The kilts ensured the Scottish stand received plenty of attention! As well as the bigname ships calling regularly in the Canary Islands, there are another 68 liners currently in production. During the event, Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez acknowledged that holding the event in the capital “was a wonderful gift for Santa Cruz and the whole of Tenerife.” He added: “Our island has world-class beaches, great food, leisure fa-
cilities, mountain parks, trails … and we are also a good place to do business.” Similarly, Cabildo President Carlos Alonso spoke of the opportunities Tenerife now provided the Cruising industry. And former Cabildo boss Ricardo Melchior, now President of the Port Authority said: “This event is an opportunity for our capital’s port because we are now ranked among the best ports in the world. “This week also sees more than 5,000 professionals already in Tenerife, getting to know our Island, better.” Among a string of new initiatives announced by the Port Authority of Santa Cruz was the headline-grabbing news that Tenerife is preparing to supply cruise ships berthed in port with LNG. Liquefied natural gas - LNG - is the alternative fuel which is set to revolutionise the industry. This service, which starts in early 2017, has delighted cruise-line
executives. Airam Díaz, commercial director of the Ports Authority, used the opening of the convention to announce this news. He also revealed that the Canary Islands were actively targeting the US market. Of the total 5.18 million tourists who visited Tenerife last year, very few actually came from America. On the cruise side, which supplied just under one million passengers, only 90,000 were US citizens. But Diaz said Tenerife officials were aiming to increase this share, via dedicated marketing initiatives, and that these were not limited to the cruise business. Also, during the conference, the Port Authority showcased its impressive, new singlestorey cruise terminal to the industry. This was unveiled during Tuesday’s gala dinner. Díaz’s announcement, coupled with the LNG news, was complemented by Costa Group chief Michael Thamm,
whose company is pioneering LNG as a power source for cruise ships. He said: “There is a lot that Germany can learn from Spain.” A clearly-impressed Thamm also said that the flexibility shown by the people in charge of Santa Cruz was a refreshing change, compared with the rather complicated authorisation procedures in Hamburg. Thamm said that ports who want to be world leaders will have to raise their game, as Santa Cruz has. He said the availability of LNG, from 2019, will be essential for ports wanting to handle new vessels, which will be powered by LNG. The conference’s gala dinner also saw the presentation of a number of awards. The Port of the Year gong went to Southampton, and Destination of the Year was Singapore. More than 100 entries were received from around the world, and the winners were selected from three short-list-
ed finalists in each category by an independent judging panel. Encouragingly for Tenerife, Santa Cruz Port made the final shortlist! It’s a fine achievement, and we should feel proud of the efforts made by the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and the Cabildo. The changes in the capital city in recent years have been incredible as the underground stretch of road opens up to the sea, allowing a vast open area and allowing easy access to the ferry-andcruise port. Sometimes, it’s the little things that impress: the neat and tidy marina, the colourful flower beds, and the new, green, bridge short-cut from the port to Plaza de España. Pride in the history of the port is also more obvious now, with the plaques to remember Nelson’s failed attack on the city. The port city forum looked at ways to change with the times, and to work closely with
all the ports which embrace the cruise ships. There were encouraging words for the other Canary Islands, and the growth of the big 2,0005,000 capacity luxury liners will have the many smaller ships looking for new ports. Lanzarote and La Palma, in particular, have been welcoming more vessels. And Los Cristianos has dipped a toe in the water with smaller ships like The World mooring up offshore - and shuttle boats bringing visitors inland. It has been calculated that the average spend of a cruise visitor ashore is 35 euros, which is all very welcome. The cruise industry is working closely with the cities it visits to make sure they are not swamped, and Santa Cruz does well in this area. The big ships are met by fleets of coaches and jeeps to whisk them off to all points of the Island. The theory is if they see and enjoy more of Tenerife, they will come back for a longer stay.

Rajoy boost still not enough to sort it out
A glowing testimony for Las Vistas beach ARONA’S Las Vistas beach has earned the AENOR Universal Accessibility Certificate of Recognition, awarded for several excellent reasons.
These include its equal-opportunities access, plus the use and enjoyment of the beach to all people, regardless of their age or abilities and its overall quality. Also, stressed the judges: “It’s an all-inclusive beach, with sun and sea for everyone.” Las Vistas is one of the most-visited beaches in Spain by senior citizens and the disabled. It has adapted bathroom facilities, easy access and a dedicated lifeguard service. Arona Mayor Jose Julian Mena believes it is
very good news for the town. “This award is well deserved,” he said. “We got our work recognised in eliminating barriers and making the beach accessible for everyone, with or without functional diversity. “Everyone can enjoy our beaches and our coastline as equals. And all this is thanks to the hard work of our public services, technicians and municipal workers.” Yurena García, Councillor for Beaches, highlighted the work of recent months to achieve this certification, adding: “The return of the international recognition of quality for our bathing areas is richly deserved. “The municipal staff, and the entire municipality as a whole, have made a great effort to restore what Arona should never have lost.”
SUNDAY polls have bolstered the position of acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, following his PP’s absolute majority in his home region of Galicia.
The People’s Party has also inflicted severe damage on socialist PSOE party leader Pedro Sánchez, whom many blame for Spain’s political deadlock, following two inconclusive general elections. The refusal of Sánchez to allow Rajoy to form a minority government causing tension within the PSOE as it prepares for a high-level meeting tomorrow (Saturday) - appears to have angered voters in Galicia and the Basque country. Yet the results of those regional elections look unlikely to yield a solution to the political turmoil, which has left Spain with a caretaker government for the past
nine months. The socialists were hammered in the regions, finishing third in Galicia and fourth in the Basque country. To make worse for the PSOE, they were overtaken in both polls by anti-austerity party Podemos, which has its own internal squabbles. As expected, the Basque Nationalist party (PNV) took most votes in the Basque
country, but failed to win an absolute majority. It will now look to form a coalition government to facilitate its return to office. A PSOE spokesman said: “Obviously we’re not satisfied with these results, which aren’t positive for us.” The centrist Ciudadanos party also suffered a bad night, failing to win a single seat in either region.
Spain’s political leaders now have one month to form a government, before King Felipe dissolves parliament on October 31st and calls for new elections to be held at Christmas Christmas Day, in fact! With Rajoy and the PP reinvigorated by the Galician victory - and, miraculously, seemingly undamaged by corruption scandals - much will depend on Sánchez. Senior PSOE members are frustrated at what they perceive as his intransigence when it comes to allowing Rajoy to govern. And, unless the socialist leader can forge a viable coalition with Podemos and others, he could find his own position challenged. Rajoy is forecast to win what would be his and Spain’s third general election in just over a year. But an overall PP majority would, probably, prove elusive again, leading to yet further attempts at coalitionbuilding.
The bullet-proof dangers of Guar A MAJOR Spanish policing group believes the Guardia Civil’s failure to provide female officers with bullet-proof jackets specifically designed for women is discriminatory and dangerous. The United Association of Civil Guards (AUGC), which has 30,000 members, also says it is affecting its ability to protect the public. Now, however, it has launched a campaign demanding the nationwide police service affords equal protection to male and female officers. It comes as a female Guardia Civil officer in Salamanca province faces disciplinary action for, allegedly, disobeying a superior’s order to put on a bullet-proof jacket for men. According to the Association, the guard was working at a police checkpoint in August when she asked if she could wear the 500-euro (£430) women’s bullet-
proof jacket she had bought herself. She preferred it to the men’s official-issue version, which did not fit, and, despite being refused permission, she put on her own jacket. The guard is now facing insubordination charges under Spain’s military penal code as the Guardia Civil is overseen by both the Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Defence. “It may sound like that old joke - about soldiers asking the enemy for more bullets so they can keep on fighting the war - but, sadly, it’s no joke,” said the AUGC. “We’re talking about workers who are trying to protect themselves in the face of apathy from the institution they serve and which, far from helping to solve things, chooses instead to prohibit them from taking their own steps to ensure their safety.” Pilar Villacorta, AUGC secretary, said the case highlighted the desper-
ate lack of bullet-proof jackets for the thousands of women in the Guardia Civil. She protested: “The jackets we have to wear are men’s jackets that are too big for us and which don’t fit female bodies.” Not only do they not fit snugly, therefore reducing the protection offered, said Villacorta, “they also make it hard for female officers to reach their guns, handcuffs and telescopic batons”. Villacorta, who has been with the Guardia Civil for 23 years, said the situation reflected the scale of gender inequality throughout wider Spanish society. “We’re part of a society which is patently very masculine,” she said: “We may be half the population, but it’s men who get the big political jobs. “It’s exactly the same in the Guardia Civil: there aren’t women in the big, decision-making jobs who can decide what we

Rato is on trial for ‘credit-card fraud’ RODRIGO Rato, the former IMF chief, along with 64 other bankers, have gone on trial in Madrid over an alleged credit-card racket at Spain’s troubled Bankia bank.
The defendants are said to have used “unofficial” company credit cards for luxury purchases, unconnected with their duties as board members, and not declared to the tax authorities. Prosecutors say a total of around 12m euros (£10.4m) was spent on hotels, fine clothes, entertainment and travel. Bankia was rescued in 2012 at huge public expense, but Mr Rato denies wrong-doing. The system, which started, allegedly, at Caja Madrid bank and was continued by Mr
Rato when Bankia was created in 2011. Mr Rato, a member of the governing centreright Popular Party (PP), who led the International Monetary Fund (IMF) - a global organisation which promotes stability in global monetary and exchange conditions - resigned as Bankia chief shortly before its near-collapse in 2012. The Spanish Government bail-out of Bankia inflicted losses on 200,000 small investors, who held preferential shares in the bank. And, unsurprisingly, some of them voiced their anger outside the Madrid courthouse on Monday. As the trial got underway, one shouted: “You wretches! Stealing money from pensioners!” Prosecutors are seeking 4½ years in jail for Mr Rato and six years for Miguel Blesa, former President of the Caja Madrid bank, which was merged with six others
in 2011 to create Bankia. If found guilty, Mr Rato could also face a 2.7meuro fine, and Mr Blesa fined 9.3m euros. Mr Rato, who headed the International Monetary Fund from 20042007, also served as
rdia Civil females need. And we shouldn’t forget that out of 79,000 officers, only 5,000 are women.” She said the decision to apply the military penal code in the Salamanca case was absurd, given the routine policing context in which the incident occurred. And she pointed out that her colleague could face prison if found guilty of insubordination. Villacorta insisted the lack of bullet-proof jackets for all officers had been a serious issue within the service for a long time. “We always need bullet-proof jackets,” she said. “What we’re asking is that when people graduate from the academy, they are given a bullet-proof jacket, along with their service weapon. “If we are going to provide security and protection to the public, the Guardia Civil needs to be looking out for our own safety.” The Guardia Civil did
not respond to questions about the Salamanca case, or the effect that badly-fitting jackets could have on officers’ ability to do their job. In a statement, it said the government had approved the purchase of 21,000 bullet-proof jackets over the next three years. “Of those, 2,000 will be female ones and will come in two sizes, adapted to the characteristics of women’s bodies. At the same time, a further 4,200 will be ordered as a reserve - and for special necessities.” According to the statement, the service has a current total of 32,016 bullet-proof jackets. The Guardia Civil, whose origins go back to the mid-19th century, performs a wide range of duties, from counterterrorism and peacekeeping, to patrolling ports and airports and protecting the environment.
Spanish Economy Minister. His fall from grace helped fuel accusations that the Popular Party was riddled with corruption. Prosecutors say the lavish credit-card pur-
chases took place from 2003-2012 - some during Spain’s financial crisis, when millions of citizens suffered hardship and unemployment soared. Mr Rato’s two successors at the top of the IMF have also been
caught up in high-profile court cases. French Socialist Dominique StraussKahn took over from him in 2007. But he resigned in May 2011 to defend himself against charges of attempted rape in New York. Prosecutors dropped the charges later that year, and Mr StraussKahn then reached an out-of-court settlement with the hotel maid who accused him. In a separate case last year, he was acquitted by a French court of the charge of “aggravated pimping” in connection with sex parties involving prostitutes. Christine Lagarde, who succeeded Mr Strauss-Kahn at the IMF, stands trial in France in December over a 285m-euro state award in damages to tycoon Bernard Tapie when she was Finance Minister. She is accused of “negligence”, but denies any misconduct.

Export figures healthy SPANISH exports of goods grew by 0.5% in the first seven months to 149.41bn euros, which was the highest cumulative figure ever for a July.
In volume terms, the increase was greater at 2.9%, because prices measured by Unit Value Indices (UVIs) fell by 2.3%. Meanwhile, imports fell by 2.3% to 157.84bn euros. Conversely, in volume terms, imports grew by 2.5% as prices shrank by 4.7%. Consequently, in the January-July period, the trade deficit totalled 8.44bn euros 34.5% lower than the figure posted in the same 2015 period (against a provisional 12.88bneuro deficit in July that year). It was the second-best
trade balance for this period since 1994, and bettered only in 2013. The coverage rate stood at 94.7%, which was 2.6% higher than in the January-July 2015 period (92.0%), and the second-highest rate for the period since the beginning of the data series, bettered only by 2013. The non-energy balance posted a 1.01bneuro surplus (against a 3.49bn surplus in Janu-
ary-July 2015), while the energy deficit shrank by 42.3% on the back of a substantial drop in energy prices. Comparing these results with those of other countries, cumulative export growth for Spain (0.5%) contrasts with the negative growth posted by the Eurozone as a whole (-1.4%) and by the European Union (-2.0%). Exports also fell from
France (-2.2% year-onyear), Italy (-1.2%), Germany (-0.3%) and UK (-5.0%). Outside the EU, foreign sales also fell in Japan (-9.5%), China (-6.7%) and the US (-6.4%). In the first seven months this year, exports in the main categories performed positively. Capital goods (20.3% of the total) grew by 3.6% year-on-year; the automotive sector (18.7% of the total) continued with its strong growth (9.6% year-onyear), and sales abroad from the food, drink and tobacco sector (16.9% of the total) grew by 5.0%. Meanwhile exports weakened for energyproduct sectors (-8.6% year-on-year, penalised by low energy prices), chemical products (-1.6%), non-chemical, semi-manufactured goods (-5.8%), raw materials (-12.4%), and other goods (-51.1%).
Hospitals’ get 15m-euro tonic CANARIES President Fernando Clavijo has announced an additional budget of 15m euros for managers of public hospitals.
It will allow them to see out the last quarter of the year without previously-rumoured cuts, and enable all their planned activities to go ahead. The Canarian Government believes these funds will enhance the Archipelago’s public
health service because there will now be 3,400 more surgical operations, 14,000 other consultations and around 15,000 new diagnostic tests. Clavijo told a press conference that these funds would stretch to the end of the year, ensuring coverage of all basic services. He added that the 2017 health budget should be around 31m euros higher than this year, which would reduce waiting lists, both in the number of patients and time for services.
Tenerife’s soaring success
TENERIFE continues to attract new airlines and new routes, as demonstrated by this week’s revelation that for the 2017-18 winter season, there will be 286,000 additional air seats.
That represents a 12.3% increase against
this season’s tally, and Cabildo President Carlos Alonso was delighted to make the announcement. It followed his meeting with Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe, who, together, have attended the Airlines Routes fair, in Chengdu, China. Alonso said the growth in strategic markets such as France, Germany, the UK and Poland continues, and the extra frequency of British
Airways for the Gatwick route - increasing to eight connections a week from next winter - shows this. The Tenerife “Routes” delegation had positive meetings with officials from Norwegian, LOT Polish Airlines, South African Airways airlines, Alitalia, Jet2. com, Easyjet, American Airlines, United Airlines, SunExpress and Iberia. Alonso also revealed that there would be new routes with Po-
land, Switzerland and Italy in the second half of 2017. Bernabe said: “This is very good news and shows the growth of our connectivity. It means more capacity and more frequencies with priority markets for the island, which translates into more opportunities to increase our competitiveness.” He also spoke of the new Easyjet flight for next winter to Luton Airport, adding:
“It strengthens the commitment of this company to our destination, with a total of 15 routes from Tenerife to cities in France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands and the United Kingdom.” The delegation in China was a Turismo de Canarias posse, with help from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports. The routes fair, the world’s largest of its kind for air routes, is
attended by 3,000 delegates, 300 airlines and 700 airports. Both Alonso and Bernabe held 30 meetings, among which, discussions with Air Canada and American Airlines are scheduled. Bernabe said: “Talks with both companies are on track and could lead to the opening of routes between the Canary Islands and Canada and the US in the medium term - perhaps in 2018.”

Felipe stirs it up! A FRESH war of words broke out between Spain and Gibraltar after King Felipe VI raised the Brexit issue with the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Arona’s great drive IT has been a good week for Tenerife. All the rumours about Monarch were just that, and the Cruise conference was a massive success.
There will be more airline seats and routes available next winter, tourism figures are up and, as we go to print, there is another boost. It had been whispered for a while, and, at the Paris Motor Show, national automobile-maker SEAT confirmed that its new, blue-riband vehicle for 2017 will be named the Arona! Following in the footsteps of the Cordoba and the Ibiza, it’s a great honour for us. I’m not going all Clarkson on you, but I can say the new SUV goes on sale in a few months. SEAT boss Luca De Meo said: “The Leon, the
Ibiza and the new Arona are going to strengthen SEAT from a commercial, financial and brandimage standpoint.” The Arona has been described by Auto Express as having “rear lights lifted from the SEAT Ateca, while the shoulder and roof-line are similar, too. It has bulky bumpers, and the bodywork hints at a pumped-up, pseudo-4x4 design. “The cabin will be lifted, almost unchanged, from the next-generation Ibiza, with plenty of connectivity options, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.” It’s sure to be a big seller in Spain and all around the continent. Of course, the dyed in the wool Adeje residents will be a bit miffed, and I hope there is a bit of bragging by the Arona councillors at the next big get-together. SEAT Arona rolls off the tongue. but I’m not sure the SEAT Silencio works…

The Spanish king made a pointed reference to Britain’s historic decision to leave the EU in his address to delegates, again calling for a negotiated handover of what Gibraltarians affectionately know as “Rock”. They were told by Felipe: “I invite the UK, on this first occasion at the UN after Brexit, to end the colonial anachronism of Gibraltar with an agreed solution between both countries to restore the territorial integrity of Spain - and bring benefits to the people of Gibraltar and the Spanish area of Campo de Gibraltar.”
But officials on the Rock were quick to pour scorn on the monarch’s remarks, warning that Spain’s attitude towards the issue was three centuries out of date. A Government of Gibraltar spokesman said: “The days when territories could be handed over from one monarch to another, regardless of the wishes of the people
who live there, ended a very long time ago. “This is not 1704, when Britain conquered Gibraltar, or 1713, when Spain ceded it by Treaty forever. “This is 2016, when what matters most is the right of a people, however small, to determine their own future. “It is regrettable that the mentality in official circles in Spain remains
stuck in the 18th Century.” He added: “Madrid have still not come to terms with having lost Gibraltar over 300 years ago. It’s time they realised that they are never going to get it back - and never means never!” Gibraltar has been a British territory since 1713, but Spain has refused to drop its own claims for control of the Mediterranean enclave. And Madrid ministers have recently used the Brexit vote as an excuse to renew calls for joint sovereignty. After Britain voted to cut ties with Brussels earlier this summer, Spain’s acting Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, said: “It’s a complete change of outlook, that opens up new possibilities on Gibraltar not seen for a very long time. “I hope the formula of co-sovereignty - to be clear, the Spanish flag on the Rock - is much closer than before.”
It’s Banco Unpopular! STRUGGLING Spanish bank Banco Popular plans to lose up to 3,000 jobs - about one-fifth of its workforce - in the latest round of cost-cutting by a Spanish lender.
The bank aims to close around 300 of its 2,000 branches in Spain as part of a restructuring,
which will affect between 2,900 and 3,000 people,” it said in a statement. Banco Popular, Spain’s seventh-largest bank by market capitalisation, says it will negotiate the job cuts with unions. Initially, it announced a cost-cutting plan in July, a month after raising 2.5bn euros in a share issue to clean up its balance sheet. In that same month, the bank reported a sec-
ond-quarter net profit of just 122,000 euros - and announced provisions on bad loans of 4.7bn euros. Like other Spanish lenders, it is now making a huge push to sell off real-estate assets, including repossessed homes, which are clogging up its balance sheet and eating into earnings. Spanish banks, which slimmed down after a decade-long property boom, went bust in 2008
and are again closing branches and slashing jobs as their profitability is hit by stiff competition. Santander, the eurozone’s biggest bank by market capitalisation, plans to close 450 smaller branches and cut 1,400 jobs in Spain, about 5% of the staff in its home market, through voluntary redundancies. Barcelona-based CaixaBank, Spain’s third-largest bank, plans to cut 3,000 jobs, mainly through early retirement, as it bids to trim salary costs. Spain has the densest bank-branch network in western Europe, with 8.6 branches per 10,000 residents, according to consultancy company Roland Berger. The average in the entire European Union is five branches per 10,000 residents.

No Monarch panic Holiday-rental firm’s ‘hidden’ service extra AN angry customer backlash has been aimed at one of Britain’s largest online holiday rental firms, which has introduced “hidden” charges.
The company, Owners Direct, added a “service fee” of up to £299 for holidaymakers who booked through its website in June. Home-owners, who already pay a £299 fee to advertise their properties, are seething at the surcharge. They claim it has led to a bookings’ slump in bookings, charging the firm with “corporate greed”. Owners Direct has also been accused of hiding from holidaymakers the extra fee, which works on a sliding scale of 4-8%, depending on price - plus VAT. While it is included in the advertised price of the rental, customers must navigate through two pop-up boxes for a breakdown of costs, which reveals the charge. The change follows the buy-out last year of
Owners Direct’s parent company, Texas-based HomeAway, by Expedia. Sue Ayre, who advertised her cottage in Cyprus on the website for two years, has now withdrawn it. The 56-year-old said: “It’s a total disaster - enquiries and bookings have fallen off a cliff. But this is nothing more than a device to earn more money for the company. “It is effectively hidden from guests who have to click through boxes to find out it is added to the price.” Hundreds of owners have voiced their anger on the “review” website Trust Pilot, giving Owners Direct an average 0.4 out of 10. A spokeswoman for the firm said: “The service fee is displayed in appropriate prominence, and we do not have any records of any confusion with travellers in relation to this fee. ‘It was implemented to enable us to stay competitive. As competition continues to increase, Owners Direct must increase investment to ensure we bring travellers to the website and, therefore, drive more bookings to owners’ properties.”
AFTER being forced to deny rumours that it was going bust, low-cost airline Monarch has revealed that it is in talks over new funding,
The company has responded to online customer enquiries in a bid to ease fears that bookings were at risk after claims were made that it was about to collapse. Flights have been operating normally, although aviation sources said aircraft had been on stand-by in the big Mediterranean resorts for the worstcase scenario. It comes after the airline, a major player in routes to Turkey and Egypt, had been hit by passengers no longer wanting to visit the countries over fears of more terror attacks. Monarch will announce “a significant investment from its stakeholders in the coming
days” as it tries to navigate through tougher market conditions. Talk of “rescue flights” collecting passengers spread among social media over the weekend , with speculation that the group could confirm early this week that it was entering administration. But the airline responded to its 114,000 Twitter followers, saying: “There is absolutely no truth in the rumours which have surfaced.” And a Monarch spokesman said: “Over the weekend, there was negative speculation about Monarch’s financial health. “Monarch is trading well and is expected to achieve an EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) of over £40m at the end of our financial year, October 2016. “This is despite a difficult period for the holiday industry, due to terrorist
incidents, Brexit and the resulting devaluation of sterling. “Our flights and holidays are operating as normal, carrying Monarch customers as scheduled.” The spokesman added: “To weather tougher market conditions and to fund its ongoing growth, Monarch expects to announce a significant investment from its stakeholders in the coming days.” Luton-based Monarch, a private airline founded in 1968, flies from five UK airports to 40 destinations. In 2015, the group carried 625,000 passengers. The business, which employs around 2,800 people, is owned by Greybull Capital, a private equity firm widely credited with turning around its fortunes. Greybull took control from the Mantegazza family in October 2014 when it acquired a 90% stake in the firm. It embarked on £200m of
cost-cutting measures, including scrapping operations from East Midlands Airport, cutting jobs and reducing the fleet. The firm turned a £57.3m loss into a £19.2m pre-tax profit a year later. But in June this year, reports surfaced that the airline was seeking tens of millions of pounds in short-term financing, despite its recent return to profit. Chief executive Andrew Swaffield said then that the business needed £35m to get through the winter period, when demand to fly is at its weakest. The rumours came after holiday-makers faced chaos this summer with the collapse of holiday website LowCostHolidays. The business left 27,000 holiday makers stranded abroad and the travel plans of around 137,000 in tatters when it went into administration in July.

Jet2 ban for drunken six SIX drunken passengers, who were “rude and aggressive to staff, and frightened others on board a Jet2 flight from Newcastle to Tenerife, have been banned from flying with the airline.
The group were spotted drinking illicit alcohol on Saturday’s flight in a scene described by one passenger as being “really scary”. Three of the group were banned for 12 months by the airline, while three more were told they could not use their return tickets home. All six have not been identified. One shocked passenger, recalling the weekend’s chain of events, said: “About an hourand-a-half into the
flight, we heard a huge commotion at the back of the plane and we noticed these people, who were really drunk. “The stewardesses had to take away their vodka. And by the end of the flight, they had to close the bar, and the captain had to turn the seat-belt signs on. When we landed, we had to sit for 20 minutes until local police took the people away.” Another passenger said: “It was really scary. People around them had to write statements for the airline. People in the area who told them to pipe down all got proper verbal abuse just foul language! “The pilot came on, really to calm everyone down because we were all anxious.” A Jet2 spokesman said: “This group were rude and aggressive to our cabin crew after drinking illicit alcohol,
and they should be in no doubt that the consequences of such behaviour will not be accepted. “As a family-friendly airline, carrying millions of holiday-makers - many of whom are families - we want our customers to have an enjoyable flight experience without the actions of a disruptive few spoiling it. And we will take all necessary action to stamp it out.” Jet2, which backs the Government’s review of how alcohol is sold at airports, is calling for Duty Free spirits to be sold in sealed bags. And last month, the company announced that it had banned alcohol on early-morning flights the first European airline to make the move, and called on others to follow its lead. The Department for Transport, which
support efforts to tackle the problem of drunken behaviour, welcomed the British Air Transport Association’s recent Code of Practice. The code, supported by airlines, airports, the police and retailers, aims to create a consistent approach to minimise disruptive-passenger behaviour. A spokesman said: “Passengers who become disruptive on flights cause distress to other travellers, create knock-on delays to other flights, and, in rare cases, can even put flight safety at risk. “Passengers should be able to enjoy journeys from the UK’s airports without having their journeys spoilt by a disruptive minority.” In 2015, there were 386 reported incidents of air-rage. And so far this year, Jet2 has issued 22 life-long bans.

ADEJE is hosting a Science Festival this weekend, in partnership with the University of La Laguna, and technology company Droiding. The event offers workshops, talks and a science fair in the Plaza de España, as well as stargazing tomorrow night (Saturday). The weekend kicks off with two talks in the Cultural Centre on Saturday, from 8pm, with Antonio Martínez Ron, journalist with media company Voz Populi, and Carlos Briones, an expert from the Astrobiology Centre CABINTA-CSIC. Following the talks, the Plaza de España lights will be switched off to facilitate a stargazing experience. Members of the public, complete with their telescopes, are invited to attend - and learn how to use them for increased viewing. Organisers will also bring some professional telescopes along to the plaza to show people the night sky in all its glory.
On Sunday, the square will host a scientific fair, with activities and stands, from 10am-7pm. There will be exhibitions and investigative demonstrations by various bodies, including the Newton Association, Discover Experience and Planeta Ciencias. During the weekend, there will also be a series of talks in public schools in the borough. “We are working to bring science closer to the public in a manner that is easier to understand,”, says Adeje Education Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, who has invited “everyone in Adeje to the events, which are designed for all the family”. Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro, Adeje Equality Councillor, for equality, is also overseeing a public exhibition on women in the world of science and technology. “It’s to show young women and girls that this is an attractive branch of science,” she said.
Concert Hall check-up IT would have been a bad time to realise they had forgotten their packed lunch as workman dangled in a basket over the wave roof of the Santa Cruz Auditorium. They had the best seats - in or outside the house - for the routine, safety check-up of the iconic music venue. The auditorium, built in 2003 from an awardwinning design by
Santiago Calatrava, has three concert homes, and is equally adept at staging rock, ballet, orchestral masterpieces, or modern musicals. The ribbed, pre-cast concrete roof catches the eye as soon as you approach from the South on the motorway, but a bit of TLC is always welcome to ensure it remains at the top of its game.

Iceland won’t freeze! ICELAND, the giant frozen-food retailer, is defending its name after learning that the Icelandic government is considering legal action to protect its identity.
The chain, which employs in excess of 20,000 people at more than 850 stores, was founded 45 years ago. But it has a frosty history with its namesake. Until 2009 it was controlled by Baugur, the Icelandic retail conglomerate, before the stake passed to national banks Landsbanki and Gitnir in what was seen as a bitter collapse. Iceland founder and chief executive Malcolm Walker later completed a management buy-out in 2014. The company said: “Iceland Foods has traded under the Iceland name in the UK since 1970 - and is, today, one of the UK’s most recognised brands. “We have also traded
as Iceland for many years in other EU countries, such as Spain, and in non-EU countries, including Iceland itself. “We are not aware that our use of the Iceland name has ever caused any confusion with Iceland the country.” Iceland Foods was unaware of any confusion, But Promote Iceland - attached to the country’s Foreign Ministry - said it was concerned
that Icelandic firms were able to register the name “Iceland” across the UK and EU. A Ministry spokesman said: “I can confirm that this is being looked into, but no decision has been made.” The issue may prove to be an unwanted distraction for the company as it concentrates on a fightback with discounters, following years of falling sales in
the supermarket pricewar. Its most recent annual results revealed that like-for-like sales fell 2.7% in the year to 26th March, compared with a 4.45% decrease in the previous 12 months. The company, which also owns The Food Warehouse superstore business, has been investing to improve store experience and advertising. And the quality of its products.

Canarian fishermen are in the doghouse
LOCAL fishing fleets who catch Albacore tuna have recently unloaded around 4,000 tons, which exceeds the limit set by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Now, the Ministry, through the General Secretariat of Fisheries, has banned the fleets from bringing any more in for the foreseeable future. The tuna ban, put in place on Wednesday, will be strictly upheld.
All catches unloaded are accredited by electronic logbooks and sales notes to ensure the correct records for Spain’s available quota. The Albacore tuna season, normally in the summer months, began earlier this year. So far, more than 10,000 tons have been caught and unloaded by the fleets in Spain, with the Canarian fleets accounting for nearly half that amount.
CW 14 Happy Streets … every day of the year in Adeje www.canarianweekly.com

ADEJE’S streets are going to be busier and, hopefully, happier as a result of the new campaign launched by the local Council. Happy Streets will see events happening all over the borough, throughout the year, particularly in the tourist zones of Costa Adeje. And the happiness should spill into the residential areas, too. The new campaign was launched on Tuesday, World Tourism Day, by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, in the company of many local businesses in the Plaza Salytien. The Mayor said: “It’s fundamental that tourist destinations are constantly reinventing and renewing themselves, if they want to continue to meet the changing needs of tourists and tourism. “Today we present Happy Streets, and with this we hope to bring together cultural and lei-

sure offers, which will be developed in the tourist zones. They will help us bring our culture and heritage closer to visitors. “We are also well-advanced in other areas of improvements for tourists, including the provision of free wifi for all in the Costa Adeje zone.” The inauguration of Happy Streets, which attracted many local representatives and companies from South Tenerife, opened with a performance from the EMMA, the Adeje School of Music and Dance, and the Adeje Folklore group. The Happy Street project itself will provide performances and events happening along the street and in local bars, commercial centres, restaurants and other spaces. An additional aim is for local businesses to appreciate the improvements, and, subsequently, create
more jobs. The project has been designed by the Tourism Department’s promotion in Adeje, under Councillor Ermitas Moreira Garcia, with the collaboration of the Creventy company. Happy Streets aims to
offer some form of entertainment on 365 days of the year, and also encourage people to attend many of the larger, cultural events already in the Adeje calendar. The programme will begin with the International Folklore Festival
(Mayantigo Fest2016) which is taking place in the Plaza Salytien this weekend. It will be followed next weekend by the Oktoberfest, also in the Plaza, on 7th and 8th October . The Mayor said current data shows that only 10 % of tourists who visit Costa Adeje go on to the streets to explore and enjoy what’s on offer. “We might think the streets are busy, but we need more people to come out, interact on a daily basis, live new experiences and meet new people,” he added. “We want them to discover the other sides to Adeje, and get to know the parts of the borough which make it so different from other tourist destinations, thanks to the people who live here, and the natural surrounds.” Happy Streets will also work to highlight the complementary offer such as leisure, restau-
rants and the commercial side of Adeje as well as more traditional and cultural attractions. From 1st January, the full Happy Street programme will be up and running online, in five languages, with a high concentration of visual content, showing what’s on offer. Club Happy Street will offer a loyalty programme, enabling people sign up for events on particular days, take advantage of promotions, discounts and draws, as well as receiving daily news updates. As well as the Happy Streets’ launch, Adeje Council also celebrated World Tourism Day, which this year took accessible tourism as its theme. The “Once” organisation held a talk for many companies in the tourism sector, outlining the requirements of visitors with special needs, be they mobility, visual or auditory.
Plenilunio packs ‘em in By Colin Kirby MARQUEES lined the water’s edge at Plaza de España, characters from history roamed the streets … and music filled the night sky from all the Santa Cruz plazas. Plenilunio’s huge promotion day - one of a series of events to stimulate trade - had the capital city buzzing. And the next big Sal2 shopping bonanza there takes place on Sunday (2nd Oct). Plenilunio is Latin for “full moon”, and, from 11am to midnight, families, couples and individuals flocked to enjoy the delights on offer. And all family members really were looked after. There was face-
painting for the kids between Plazas del Principe and Candelaria, and young minds were taxed by giant versions of Connect Four and chess. Inflatable castles were given a good bouncing in the Parque Bulevar, and, near Teatro
Guimera, there was a dog show for four-footed friends. As well as theatrical characters wandering the side-streets, there was a good selection of cartoon stars and super heroes. Nature does a pretty impressive job of making Parque Garcia Sanabria a blaze of flowering colour and scents.
But for this special occasion, there was the added attraction of one shaded avenue full of food trucks, and another jammed with arts, crafts - and even massage! There was another food zone at the old Alameda de Duque archway, while Dorada Especial beer made a popular, added ingredi-
ent for some different gastronomy. What’s not to like about tuna burgers or duck pizza? Plenilunio is not just about the shopping parades and plazas, though, because surprises pop out of every corner. The military museum on the edge of the city threw open its doors for guided visits, and also made incursions into the city. A German Army-converted VW from World War Two brought some startled looks from shoppers, especially as it was followed closely by an American GI jeep. As the fun was continuing to midnight, the evening seemed just the right time
to launch live bands around the city. Also joining in the late experience was a 10pmmidnight opening of the African market, which usually closes mid afternoon. Remarkably, some visitors managed the entire 13 hours, while others dipped in and out. But, overall, the event was a big success. This Sunday’s Sal2 is an entirely different beast, with the emphasis on bargains as the major stores expand out, on to the streets, to offer day-long reductions. Though not on the Plenilunio scale, there will also be street entertainment to accompany the ringing tills.

German travel agents to see best of Tenerife TENERIFE will today (Friday) host an annual weekend meeting of RTK, the leading German travel-agency network.
The Island welcomes 750 delegates, who will have the opportunity to see, first-hand, what we have to offer as a destination. The event is sponsored by the Cabildo, and, said President Carlos Alonso: “It is a great opportunity for the Island. This allows us to publicise Tenerife as a holiday island and let them see with their own eyes all the facilities we have, and the highest standard of quality.” Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe, added: “These workshop sessions are important. We have prepared a whole programme of presentations on our destination and activities on the island for them. “Our aim is that they will go away, knowing everything about what Tenerife offers for a holi-
day.” Barnabe emphasised that German travellers appreciate the attractions of the Island: the natural beauty, the diversity of options to choose from, exquisite cuisine - both simple and elaborate - Tenerife wines, the friendly character of the people, and of course, the weather. “There are many elements that make Tenerife such an attractive place for German visitors,” he added. The RTK network brings together some 3,500 travel agencies, which, collectively, reach a turnover of over three billion euros.
In addition to agencies, RTK includes tour operators from FTI, Neckermann Reise, Mein Reise Bureau and TUI Travel Star. The Germans are the third-largest market for Tenerife, which welcomed almost 600,000 of their travellers last year. Its market share is 11.4%, and Germany is behind only the British (with 34% and 1,765,000 tourists), and Spanish (23.1% and 1,200,000). The figure has also increased considerably in the first seven months of this year, up 11%, to reach some 375,000 visitors.
Wanted: investment for the North Sea industry DESPITE its production recovery, investment in the North Sea oil and gas industry is needed urgently to help protect the supply chain from further damage.
The annual Economic Report, by industry body Oil & Gas UK, said the fall-out from the world oil prices’ collapse had been felt particularly hard by those who relied on the industry. It said the resulting investment scale-back by oil and gas companies would see supply-chain revenues decline 31% over two years by the end of 2016 - the bulk of the loss coming this year. The report said companies were positioning to “survive and succeed in the long-term” at $50 per barrel for Brent crude oil - currently trading just below that figure. The price hit a $28 low
in January from the 2014 highs of $115, while gas prices had seen only a moderate recovery. These low prices meant order books among consultants, engineers and other supply-chain participants had dried up, and an estimated 120,000 people had lost their jobs over the past two years. Separate research has also outlined hard times for hotels and restaurants - house prices in Aberdeen falling 20% in a year. The report said that exploration for new oil and gas had touched a record low. Yet production was 10% up because efficiency savings had led to a 45% drop in extraction costs since 2014. Deirdre Michie, Oil & Gas UK’s chief executive, said: “The UKCS (UK Continental Shelf) is in urgent need of fresh investment to boost exploration and drive activity, particularly for the supply chain.
“Exploration has fallen to record lows, and little new investment has been approved in 2016 and 2017 looks no better. “Increased asset trading is one area that could free up new investment by facilitating the trading of late-life assets.” Ms Michie called for the Treasury to create a “more competitive” tax regime, and allow the transfer of tax breaks when assets were sold on. But the Government countered by saying it had already put in place tax breaks worth £2.3bn. Scottish Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse said measures were needed to give operators the confidence to continue investing, including loan guarantees. He added: “While we have received assurances from the UK Government, we have yet to see any details, despite the urgency around this issue highlighted by the report.”

NASA strikes gold with Jupiter moon A M E R I C A’ S space agency NASA believes it has discovered plumes of water, spewing from the surface of Jupiter’s moon, Europa.
Astronomers made the discovery with the Hubble Space Telescope. And it could mean that those involved in missions to Europa could possibly take samples from its ocean without having to drill through miles of ice. Europa’s ocean is considered to be “one of the most promising places
that could potentially harbour life in the Solar System”, which makes it a significant finding, says NASA officials, possibly providing “a tantalising opportunity”. Geoff Yoder, acting associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington, said: “These plumes, if they do exist, may provide another way to sample Europa’s sub-surface.” Europa’s huge ocean, which contains twice as much water as all the Earth’s oceans combined, is protected by a layer of extremely-cold, hard ice - of unknown thickness.
The plumes are estimated to rise about 125 miles before, presumably, raining material back down on to Europa’s surface, assumes NASA. Its team, led by William Sparks of Baltimore’s Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), observed Europa passing in front of Jupiter on 10 separate occasions, spanning 15 months. And they saw what could be plumes erupting on three of these occasions. If confirmed, Europa would be the second moon in the solar system known to have water-vapour plumes, following the 2005 dis-
covery by NASA’s Cassini orbiter of jets of water vapour and dust spewing off the surface of Saturn’s moon, Enceladus. Scientists may use the infra-red vision of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, scheduled to launch in 2018, to confirm venting or plume activity on Europa. The agency announced last year that it intends to send a robotic spacecraft, equipped with a suite of scientific instruments, to circle Europa in the 2020s. Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system and fifth from the sun, is surrounded by more than 50 moons.
The Thai house of horror and riddles POLICE in Thailand, who have discovered a dismembered body in a freezer, believe it had been there for more than three years.
The corpse, said to be that of an “elderly”, white European man, was discovered during a raid on a suspected passport-forgery gang in Bangkok, in which guns, drugs and fake identity documents were also found. Following initial postmortem results, Police Major-General Surachate Hakparn said: “We have contacted both the FBI and UK authorities to check fingerprints, DNA and dental records, to see if there are any matches. “Although we don’t know his nationality, we do believe him to be European, and we believe he has been dead for more than three years.” The police chief added that analysis of the man’s shoes and shirt suggested they were from the United States.
Three English-speaking men arrested during the raid have since been charged with multiple offences. But Thai authorities say their true identities, and that of the corpse, remain a mystery. The men gave their names as James Eger and Aaron Gabel, who claim to be American, and Peter Andrew Colter. He told police he was a 58-year-old Briton, born in London, who grew up in the US. However, investigators are treating the names and nationalities given by the men as highly suspicious. Eger and Gabel are
currently being held in a remand centre, while Colter is in a secure hospital, receiving treatment for injuries sustained after allegedly shooting a police officer during the raid. Thai police have told Sky News they believe he is the ringleader of the gang. During the raid, officers found a UK passport in the name of Peter Andrew Colter. But his photograph was also found in a French passport, as Jean Claude Colbert, and in a US passport, as William Peter Johnson. And all three documents car-
ried different information regarding birth places and dates. Pol Maj-Gen Hakparn told Sky News that Colter claimed he entered Thailand using the UK passport. But checks by investigators show no record of that document, or the names shown in the US or French passports, in any of Thailand’s immigration records. He said that establishing Colter’s true identity would help uncover possible links to other major fake-passport networks, for which Thailand has long been a global hub. “The main thing we are focused on is establishing the identity of the corpse, and answering the question “who is Peter? That will lead us to other links,” he added. Although the raid uncovered just 10 passports, police insist they had found a major passport-forgery operation. They pointing to a range of stamps and equipment found during the raid, as well as prior intelligence which led to the search-warrant being sought.
Iberia’s cut-price deals in Canaries IBERIA Express has announced a cut in ticket prices for its routes to the Canaries, ranging between 13-25%.
Specifically, the airline explains that offers on its flights to Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma will see cuts “of about 20 euros each way, putting the cost to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura from 59 euros each way, and the La Palma route from 79 euros.” These prices, says Iberia, represent a reduction of about 25% over previous rates. As for Gran Canaria and Tenerife, there is a 13% reduction. with tickets from 34 euros each way. And the airlines says: “This is a
strategic commitment to the Islands. “Iberia Express has returned to lower prices in the Canary and Balearic Islands in order to consolidate its position as the main operator of the Archipelagos with Madrid.” Now the bad news. The company is adopting the same policy as the other companies regarding the firstsuitcase rule. “This means will we charge for a suitcase but not for cabin baggage,” says a spokesperson. But Iberia Express will give 50% discounts on baggage charges to residents of the Canaries and Balearics Islands. That means the first bag checked in will cost 7.5 euros, which, says Iberia, is the lowest of the entire market”.

ARONA town is just a 20-minute drive up above the main southern resorts of Tenerife. But, with a proud sense of the past, the council invites one and all to join in a day of celebration tomorrow (Saturday).
The event runs from 10am to 7pm and regular, free buses are being laid on, so you can enjoy the food, drink, theatre, dance, sport, and good old-fashioned hospitality. The church and main plaza are the focal point, but there will be something going on around every corner. Plaza de la Paz is the place for show-cooking and tasting, Plaza del Cristo will have a theatrical feel, with performances to bring the past to life. Casa La Bodega will have plenty of exhibitions to browse through, workshops will show old arts and games at Calle La Luna, and the streets will be linked with music, dance, and song. Look out for the free, green Titsa buses, from 10am-5pm hourly from

Dock’s on the rocks IT is becoming a tricky business to steer a boat into Garachico port, where a build-up of rocks on the seabed entrance has captains quaking at the helm. Now, local Mayor Jose Heriberto Gonzalez has called on the Puertos Canarios to
help ease the problem. The 200-berth, 3.1meuro port, which opened in 2012, has failed to attract the number of vessels anticipated, especially larger pleasure boats. And a planned hotel nearby has also failed to surface.
The rare malt was among seven bottles of whisky taken from Tullibardine Distillery’s shop in Blackford, Auchterarder. Altogether, whisky and two glasses worth around £14,000, were lifted during the breakin. Police are looking for a man with two bags, seen walking near the A9 at Blackford at about 9.55pm. He was described as being between 2535, of medium build, and wearing a red top, light-coloured shorts and worker boots. Police Scotland said
the Stirling Street shop was broken into between 5pm on Saturday and 9:25am on Sunday. A typical brandedwhisky in a UK supermarket can cost about £14. Cheaper blends can be bought for less, but a single malt would be about twice as much. And at the top end of the market, a rare bottle can fetch thousands. In some examples, luxury packaging - a crystal decanter, encrusted with jewels, for example - makes up much of the cost. In others, the rarity of the drink itself, from casks matured decades ago, pushes up the price tag. And, surprisingly, top auction prices of drink can match works of art. In 2010, an auction house in New York sold a decanter of whisky for £353,000!

The ‘catastrophic failure’ of Alton Towers operator THE company operating Alton Towers has been fined £5m over last year’s tragic crash of The Smiler ride, which led to two female teenagers each having a leg amputated.
Merlin Attractions, which operates the Staffordshire theme park among others, admitted the health and safety offences at Stafford Crown Court. Vicky Balch, then 19, and Leah Washington, then 17, each lost a leg in last year’s June 2nd collision, and 14 others on the ride were also injured. The court had earlier heard that an engineer “felt pressure” to return the ride to service after it had developed a fault shortly before the crash. A report compiled by a group of consultants said the park’s management had linked the payment of bonuses to “acceptably low levels of downtime” for rollercoasters. Victims were said to
have watched with “disbelief and horror” as the carriages they occupied ploughed into an empty carriage on the track. The prosecution said the impact was equivalent to a 90mph car crash. Paul Paxton, a lawyer for eight of the victims,
said outside the court: “The court have imposed what we believe is a record fine for the industry. But, of course, money alone will never replace limbs, or heal the psychological scars. “It’s worth remembering that this hearing is the first time many of
my clients have heard the full extent of the criticism against Merlin. “They have been shocked and disappointed by the catalogue of errors: a catastrophic failure to assess risk, inadequate training, inadequate management, failures
to communicate, failure to put into place safety systems at work.” He added: “This is about making sure that lessons have been learned, not just by Merlin but by others throughout the industry.” Judge Michael Cham-
bers QC said the accident was not human error, as the firm had claimed, but was a “catastrophic failure” by Merlin, involving basic health and safety measures. He said the “obvious shambles of what occurred” could have been “easily avoided” by an appropriate written system to deal with ridefaults and a suitable risk-assessment. The Judge added: “This was a needless and avoidable accident, in which those injured were fortunate not to have been killed or bled to death. “Those in the front row bore the brunt of the collision and had their legs crushed in the tangled steel.” He said the relatives and the injured had shown “great courage and fortitude” in the aftermath. Lawyers for Merlin said the company’s revenues dropped by £14m following the crash, and, as a result, it had “got the message”. It had since made 30 changes to safety-measures, equipment and training.
Facebook chief vows to eradicate diseases FACEBOOK founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife have pledged more than 3-billion dollars towards an ambitious plan to rid the world of disease. Zuckerberg and paediatrician Priscilla Chan said their aim was to “cure, prevent or manage all disease within our children’s lifetime”. Investment, say the couple, will go towards research into cancer and infectious disease, as well as heart and neurological disease. Their plans were revealed during a San Francisco event for their philanthropic group, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Dr Chan said they had
set their target following the birth of daughter Max last year, with the goal of improving the lives of all other children in her generation dramatically. She recalled experiences of telling parents their child had an incurable disease, or could not be revived. And hopes to spare parents
the pain she had seen while delivering difficult news in her role as a paediatrician. “In those moments, and in many others, we’re at the limit of what we understand about the human body and disease, the science behind medicine - the limit of our ability to alleviate suffering,” she said. “We
want to push back that boundary.” She said her role as a doctor had made her determined to work with scientists to help save lives. Husband Mark said the funding would bring scientists and engineers together, build tools and technology needed to help fight disease, and also grow the movement to fund science. The tech billionaire noted that 50 times more was spent on treating people who were ill than finding cures. “We can do better than that,” he added. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative mission statement states: “We want every child to grow up
in a better world. Our hopes for the future centre on two ideas: advancing human potential and promoting equality. “We’ll focus first on personalised learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities. “We will make longterm investments over 25, 50 or even 100 years because our greatest challenges require time to solve.” In December 2015, the couple announced that they planned to give away 99% of their Facebook shares to fund good causes. Dr Jeremy Farrar, of global charitable foundation the Wellcome
Trust, said: “I’d like to congratulate Mark and Priscilla for starting such an ambitious venture to understand health and disease, which resonates strongly with Wellcome’s mission. “Science and research are critical to the challenge of better health, and need the support and stimulus that philanthropic initiatives like this bring. “Wellcome aims to spend £5bn over the next five years on our mission of improving health by helping great ideas to thrive. “And we welcome the fresh impetus to science and research that the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative will bring.”

Sir Terry Wogan Remembered:
Fifty Years At The BBC
Don't Miss... Friday 30th September, BBC1, 21.00 Sir Terry Wogan Remembered: Fifty Years At The BBC (w/t) on BBC One, which is being made by BBC Studios, will take viewers on a journey through the 50-year career of the true national treasure. The programme will be an affectionate celebration full of classic moments featuring much-loved shows, from Blankety Blank to the Eurovision Song Contest. It will explore the three facets of Terry: on television, on radio and as the charity figurehead for BBC Children in Need, and will also reveal the private side of a man whose values and beliefs laid the foundations for his extraordinary success. The tribute will feature people who knew him best sharing fond, funny memories of one of the most-loved broadcasters of all time - including Jeremy Vine, Ken Bruce, Alesha Dixon, Michael Grade, Eamonn Holmes, Katie Melua, Dermot O’Leary, Len Goodman, Graham Norton, Fearne Cotton and Rob Brydon.
Louis Theroux: Savile Sunday 2nd October, BBC2, 21.00 In light of the unmasking of Jimmy Savile as a predatory sex offender, and 15 years on from the BBC documentary When Louis Met Jimmy, Louis Theroux sets out to understand how a man who was at the centre of British entertainment and charitable fund-raising for decades was able to get away with a long litany of crimes. In this reflective 75-minute film, Louis talks to some of Savile’s victims, to people who worked closely with him, and re-examines moments from the original film as well as footage that’s never aired before on television. In 1999 and 2000, Louis spent about two weeks, spread out over a number of months, filming with the man then merely known as an eccentric and enigmatic television and radio personality with a passion for charity work and an obscure private life. In that original documentary Louis succeeded in showing a different side of Savile, asking him about the rumours of paedophilia, the question of his sexual interests, and stories about his run-ins with the police while running nightclubs in the 60s. For several years after the show went out, Louis continued to be fascinated by Savile and they maintained a friendly relationship. But the darkest side of this deceptive man eluded him. Now, to gain a deeper understanding of how Savile was able to use his celebrity status to commit his abuse for decades, Louis meets victims and several people that knew him but have not spoken out in this way before. Louis attempts to build a clearer picture of how Savile was perceived, both then and now, by those with whom he came into contact, and learn how those that knew him either hold on to their memories or have the task of reappraising that part of their life. With the power of hindsight, Louis examines his own conscience and raises some challenging questions, to consider how he himself, the press, institutions Savile worked with, and society as a whole can make sense of their failings and learn from the past.

Performance Live: Kate Tempest BBC2, 22.00
The first episode of Performance Live will broadcast in October 2016, as part of BBC Two’s dedication to arts on Saturday Nights. In this episode, produced in partnership with Arts Council England and Battersea Arts Centre a trio of spoken-word artists curated by Kate Tempest will share bite-sized performances on themes of contemporary Britain. Kate Tempest picks up the mic to fuse hip-hop, poetry and theatre as she shares stories from her second album, Let Them Eat Chaos, filmed for BBC Two from the oneof-a-kind Rivoli Ballroom in her neighborhood of Brockley, southeast London. Let Them Eat Chaos is set in the early hours of one morning and traces the lives and stories of seven people, living on a southeast London street, who all find themselves awake at 4.18am.
The X Factor ITV1, 20.00
The route to the live shows draws tantalisingly closer for the remaining X Factor contestants as they jet off to Judges’ Houses in a bid to land a coveted place in the live shows. Offering a glimpse into the jet set lifestyle that The X Factor winner could have, the four categories travel to glamorous destinations across the world. With just one more chance to impress their mentor, each act will be hoping to convince them that they have the star quality required to reach the live shows. This year the Groups category will jet off to Ibiza to sing for Louis Walsh, Simon Cowell invites the Girls category to Malibu, the Overs category are hosted by Sharon Osbourne in her home in Los Angeles and the Boys category fly out to Nice to perform for Nicole Scherzinger. However, before they make their way to their destinations, each judge must nominate a Wildcard act for one of their fellow judges, choosing someone they feel missed out on a coveted place at Judges’ Houses. The Girls Wildcard is nominated by Louis, the Overs Wildcard was nominated by Nicole, the Groups Wildcard was nominated by Sharon and Simon nominated the Boys Wildcard, making it 7 acts in each category and 28 in total. With crucial decisions to be made, each judge has help at hand from guest judges who know all about what it takes to have a hit record – Louis is joined by 2014 X Factor runner up Fleur East and Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon, Nicole enlists the help of renowned DJ Calvin Harris, Simon recruits former Spice Girls, Mel B and Emma Bunton and Sharon reunites with singer Robbie Williams. As ever, X Factor host Dermot O’Leary will be on hand to congratulate the lucky three, and console those that fall at the final hurdle.

Victoria ITV1, 21.00
Victoria’s pregnancy raises the sticky topic of a Regency. When Victoria names Albert as the head of state in case of her death, the Tories are outraged by prospect of being ruled by a German prince Albert however is still desperate to have more influence in the present. He proposes a trip to the rapidly industrialising North in an attempt to engage with the country at large. Far from the thrilling journey he anticipated, Albert is humiliated by his Tory hosts and confused by Victoria’s insensitivity. In this hostile environment Albert finds a kindred spirit in Sir Robert Peel and to his delight he invites Albert to visit his railway. Below stairs, Lohlein is subject to similar antagonism for being foreign and back at the palace, Francatelli and Skerrett are starting to fall in love.

Guy Martin wants to beat the 25-year-old speed record for a human-powered boat. It means pedalling a specially-built boat along a 100-metre course at an average speed of 21mph: a speed normally reserved for expensive speedboats or racing yachts. It’s Guy’s most physically and technically challenging record attempt yet, so he employs the services of two Olympic legends: Sir Chris Hoy trains Guy like an Olympic cyclist, and Sir Ben Ainslie hands over the helm of one of his multi-millionpound America’s Cup yachts to demonstrate the cutting-edge technology of hydrofoils: underwater wings that help a boat fly across water. Guy then builds two different machines that use hydrofoils: a carbon-fibre catamaran made with help from the University of Lincoln, and a canoe fitted with a giant aeroplane propeller, assembled in his own back garden.

Kenyan chef Kiran Jethwa travels to remote and spectacular corners of the planet to discover the world’s finest ingredients on extreme journeys testing more than his taste buds. In this episode, Kiran travels the length of Bangladesh, one of the world’s top fish producing nations, where he discovers the country’s fishing industry is as diverse as it can be dangerous and witnesses the amazing sight of fresh prawns being caught by specially trained otters. His journey begins in the northern rural farming district of Mymensingh. Here he discovers a life-threatening way of transporting baby fish, or fingerlings, to market, via the open roof of an inter-city train. He joins scores of Bangladeshi fish porters on their daily commute, riding the railway into Dhaka while balancing 20kg pots of fingerlings atop the roofs of the speeding rush-hour trains. From there, Kiran embarks on a mammoth journey by rail, car and boat to one of the world’s largest mangrove swamps, the Sundarbans.

The Forgotten Children ITV1, 21.00
88,000 refugee children are now stuck in Europe without their parents. They thought they would be safe here but The Forgotten Children reveals many have faced violence, police brutality and hundreds have been imprisoned in detention centres and police cells. Alone and afraid, many are also vulnerable to trafficking gangs and sexual exploitation. Governments have moved many of the children into state run camps and closed the doors to journalists. This programme hears their disturbing stories of suffering and survival. In Greece thousands of children are living in camps and sleeping rough. More than 3,000 are without their parents. Nagham, 12, and her 13-year-old brother Mohamed are orphans from the Syrian city of Aleppo. Their home is now a derelict petrol station in Northern Greece. There are no showers or toilets and they sleep in a tent. Nagham and Mohamed’s mother was killed in an airstrike. Their family home was destroyed. Their father was kidnapped at gunpoint by a faction fighting in the country’s civil war five years ago. Mohammed says: “We think about whether they killed him or whether the regime took him or whether he’s still alive.” The Forgotten Children follows Nagham and Mohamed as they struggle to survive in Greece. They fled a nearby state run camp after violence erupted and people were stabbed. When Greek immigration officials demand that they leave the derelict petrol station, they end up in a squat run by anarchists in Athens. They worry for their safety after a child is kidnapped from the same building. Nagham says “A child was kidnapped. How is that not going to scare us? If you go outside anything could happen to you.”

Bud is a real softie but his Achilles heel is his boundless energy - he is full of life and so in need of a very specific type of owner who can cater for his energetic demands! Paul arranges for Bud to enter a doggie fun run where he’ll be on show to lots of like-minded, athletic dog lovers - will he catch somebody’s eye and finally end his marathon stay in kennels? Finally Paul takes on the role of doggie masseur to Jenson the staffie, who suffered accidental permanent scarring on his back that has left his skin dry and itchy. This uncomfortable problem has left Jenson struggling with kennel life, so Paul tries to alleviate his blues by putting his magic hands to work moisturising Jenson’s back to try and make his skin silky smooth - will the spa treatment work in cheering up Jenson?

Anne Robinson’s Britain BBC1, 20:00
Anne Robinson presents a four-part series delving into different areas of contemporary British life. In this episode she tackles parenting, assessing the rights and wrongs of 21st-century parenting by looking at some of the radically different approaches available. She enconters an attachment mother who breastfeeds her toddlers, a career mother who misses out on some of the most significant moments of her children’s lives, a single dad struggling to disciple his brood and a traditional father with well-behaved offspring. The programme also gets two sets of parents to experience each others’ very different approaches to education.

London And South East Dessert. Creative culinary competition. The nation’s top chefs are competing for the ultimate prize - the chance to cook at a banquet held at the Palace of Westminster. It is the dessert course and the final chance for three of the region’s most talented chefs to get through to the judging chamber, as today the veteran judge will send one chef home. It is a highly emotional dish for chef Ronnie Murray as he prepares a dessert inspired by a very personal great Briton. He struggles to maintain his composure as the veteran tastes his technically complex pudding. There is no let up for Russell Bateman - once again his take on an afternoon tea is challenging, and he has to create a perfect chocolate mirror glaze in the heat of the GBM kitchen. Meanwhile, Michelin-starred Mark Froydenlund is using the delicate fragrant flavours and spices from the Commonwealth island of Grenada in a bid to secure him a place in Friday’s judging chamber.

Meet Nathan Swift... Nathan will be joining us again this year to host the Tenerife Entertainment Awards on Sunday 9th October. We managed to catch up with him and ask him a few questions... Ed: What do the TEAs mean to the Tenerife entertainment scene in your opinion? N: I think that they mean different things to different people, but to me it is a celebration of the Entertainment scene in Tenerife, without a doubt the strongest of its kind in Europe. It’s also an annual excuse to meet up with your peers and enjoy a sweet sherry (once the bar has run out of everything else!) Ed: This is your 9th TEAs you will have hosted since 2006.... how have the awards changed in your opinion? N: The stage has got bigger, so I look smaller. The support is greater and the ‘anti’ crowd have got quieter. And over all I think people ‘get it’ now, and appreciate what it is all about, which is positively promoting the entertainment scene. Ed: You are well known for your big entrances, which has been your favourite? N: That’s a hard one... I think Daffyd as it was liberating. The sword fight and dance off with the medieval knights was fun, but really hot. Ed: And for this year’s entrance? N: As of now I don’t know, I normally find out what’s in stall for me about 2 days before, but it’s always fun! Ed: You left Tenerife in 2004, for those who don’t know, what did you do over here, and how have you maintained your popularity? N: I left in May 2004, 12 years ago now. Many moons ago I started as a DJ, then radio, compering, singing and stand up all got added onto the list and I just became a jack of all trades but a master of none. I have no idea how you maintain popularity? Am I popular, or is everybody just being polite. I could have Bruce Forsyth syndrome where I’m invited back because they feel they have to...??? All I know is I love Tenerife and the people within, and I try to see them as often as I can. Ed: What TEAs highlights stick out in your mind over the past decade? N: The live performances are always the stand out moments for me. There truly are too many to list, but they are the greatest advert for the depth of talent available on a lump of rock in the Atlantic. Ed: Of all the winners over the decade, which one stands out? N: As host I have to keep it impartial...but there are 4 or 5 times I have stood open mouthed and been really blown away by acts on the day.
25 swift questions in 25 seconds! Star sign: Solero... sorry, Libra. Marital status: Nearly... What makes you smile: Life What makes you unhappy: Not much Bad habits: Rocking side to side as food gets nearer. Favourites: Sports: Rugby, Football, Golf, Basketball Movie type: Action Film: Top Gun Your idol: Phil Collins Holiday: Tenerife Place: Tenerife Food: My Mum’s meatloaf Soft drink: Rio Tropical Alcohol: Rum and Ginger beer with fresh lime Car: Ford Explorer... I just love them. Colour: Blue Clothes brand: Jacamo...!!! Shop: Size? Band: Linkin Park Author: John Grisham Animal: Lemur Thing: Music Saying: No drama...
Ed: This year is the 10th Special edition of the TEAs, what do you think of the format this year? N: I love the fact that it is different, and a change is as good as a rest. It’s a celebration this year, which is a much better idea than having a year off, and I’m looking forward to seeing some old friends who are coming over for it. Whatever the organisers decide to do they get criticized by someone for it, whether it’s for nomination format, ways of voting, even when we moved to Castillo San Miguel....but very often that’s because that someone doesn’t fully understand what is going on.

Our forward planning
Charity’s sunny bonanza SUNDOWNERS Bar, in Green Park, Golf del Sur would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who attended its Macmillan cancer support charity event, which raised a huge total of 2,000 euros. There was lots of dancing, and pay-to-sing ka-
raoke … or the funnier, stitch-up event called pay-for-someone-elseto-sing. Everybody brought lots of cakes, sandwiches nibbles, a curry and chilli, which all went down really well. So a big thanks from Kim and all the gang.
WE know it’s only October (from tomorrow), but there’s nothing like planning ahead! This year, please consider a reverse Advent Calendar of donations for the cats and kittens in our care. The idea is that, into a box or basket, you put a little cat-type gift each day of December, and donate it to our cause at the end of the month. A tin of food, a little toy etc; it doesn’t have to be expensive - just a little something for each day. We can collect from you at the end of December, if you aren’t able to drop it off at our charity shop. Not only will you be helping a good cause, but it would be an excellent idea for children, to encourage them to think of others at that time of year.
Table-top sale Next Saturday (October 8th, from 10am7pm) is our next tabletop sale in the Adeje and Las Chafiras Kola Sur pet shops. We’ll be selling little, hand-made gifts. If you make handicrafts, and could sell us some at cost - or, even better, donate some for us to raise money - please contact us. Donations of tinned cat food, cat biscuits, cat toys etc, can be left at the table, and will help us tremendously with our work. We are also looking for people who can spare an hour or two to man the tables during the day. You don’t need to be able to speak Spanish, so can you help? Please tell all your friends and neighbours, and spread the word. We will be holding

German Shepherds flock in WE’VE seen a large increase of German Shepherd dogs coming to the refuge over the last few months. They have a tranquil character but, when required, are very alert. Generally, when handled and trained correctly, they make excellent pets who are, naturally, very loyal to their owners. But they are more suitable for larger properties, where they are free to roam. interested in adopting one of these gorgeous dogs. James Corden has even more rabbit these days! BRITISH comedy star James Corden, making a big name for himself in the States, will bring Beatrix Potter’s much-loved Peter Rabbit character to life in an animated, bigscreen adaptation of the classic children’s tale.
Sony’s Columbia Pictures studios’ spokesman says Corden, host of America’s smash hit The Late Late Show in Ameri-
ca, will voice the main character. Bridesmaids star Rose Byrne will voice a character named Bea, while Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley and Elizabeth Debicki, from The Night Manager, are also set to be part of the voice cast. The film, a liveaction CGI production directed by Will Gluck, recounts the tale of the rebellious rabbit … and the trouble he encounters in a farmer’s vegetable garden. The story was an instant success after being picked up in 1902 by British children’s
publisher Frederick Warne & Co. Announcement of the film, set for release in April 2018, coincides with the 150th anniversary of the birth of author (and illustrator) Beatrix Potter. The Tale of Peter Rabbit, first published in 1902, was followed by 23 stories involv-
ing such favourites as Jemima Puddle-Duck, Squirrel Nutkin and hedgehog Mrs TwiggyWinkle. Ms Potter, who was 77 when she died in 1943, wrote stories inspired by the English
and Scottish countryside. Earlier in September, a tale written by the author more than 100 years ago was published for the first time, with illustrations by Quentin Blake. The
Tale Of Kitty-In-Boots was discovered two years ago by publisher Jo Hanks, who spotted a reference to the manuscript in an out-ofprint biography about the best-selling children’s writer.
Frenchman Depardieu’s ‘stinky-cheese’ country
La Laguna’s young stars
GERARD Depardieu, the Frenchborn actor, believes his native country is at risk of descending into a theme park of stereotypes, designed to draw in tourists.
The Cyrano de Bergerac star, who was granted Russian citizenship in 2013, complains that France is in danger of becoming “a Disneyland for foreigners, populated by fools and stinky cheese”.
When asked by Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera whether he still considered himself French, he said: “No, I am a citizen of the world. “France risks becoming a Disneyland for foreigners, populated by fools who do wine and cheese that stinks for tourists. There is no more freedom … people are manipulated.” Depardieu appears to be more fond of Italy, saying: “In Italy, fortunately, you have not lost your culture and your identity because you are a young coun-
try, born with Garibaldi. “Unlike half of Europe, which, with the fear of migrants, has become a little fascist.” Depardieu also attacked the film industry, saying: “The cinema no longer exists. There is a world of entertainment, people, terrorised by the Americans, who no longer know which language to speak. “There are 10 stars and they are all American. Their movies packed with specialeffects are games, and the rest of the movie is struggling to exist.”
A B R A H A M Mateo and Maluma, two rising stars of the international music scene, will be packing out the Pabellon Santiago Martin sports hall in La Laguna in October.
The Pabellon, known locally as The Hamburger, and standing halfway
between Santa Cruz and the historic centre of La Laguna, holds over 4,000 people. And Mateo, from San Fernando in mainland Spain will be serving up his lively brand of pop on Friday, 14th October. At the age of nine, he won the Spanish music Revelation award. Now, at 20, he is almost a veteran on the circuit. Tickets start at 30 euros and the show kicks off at 9pm. Then,
on the Saturday (15th) October it’s the turn of 22-year-old singersongwriter Maluma, from Columbia, with a wilder, latino feel. Expect some pretty raunchy dance moves, because his tour is called “Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy”. This concert also starts at 9pm, with tickets beginning at 20 euros. Gang’s huge avocado haul worth a fortune THE Guardia Civil’s special team, covering agricultural theft and livestock, this week completed a police operation called “Haas”. Specifically, they have exposed a large racket in stolen avocados, arresting a five-strong gang, said to have raided farm property to steal huge amounts of avocados. La Orotava Valley farmers are pleased with the arrests, following a series of horticultural-product thefts over the course of this year. The thieves are believed to have forced open the farms’ perimeter fences and nabbed
over 1,000 kilos of avocados, worth about 5,500 euros. Those arrested are all local residents, and most of the raids happened in broad daylight. It is thought that they had helpers in markets, selling on the stolen catch. The price of avocados has risen sharply over the last few years, going currently for about 2.50 euros per kilo.

More tea vicar? Let us spray… FIRST of all we had teapots with loose tea, and then came the revolutionary teabags. Now comes the most audacious way to make a cuppa … from an aerosol can!
And, says the YumCha company, which offers three types Black, Early Grey and Jasmine - it’s No More Tea Bags spray-tea tastes better than the average tea-bag. In fact, the company maintains the sprayon tea tastes as if it has been brewed for five minutes to impart a genuine tea flavour, while the average teabag stays in the cup for a matter of seconds. Each can contains sufficient spray foam to allow for up to 20 servings of tea. It can be squirted into a cup or mug of boiling water, making a hotter, richer brew, with or without milk, which
tastes better, insists the company, and does not leave a soggy teabag, dripping liquid or messy leaves. Want a stronger cup? Just add another squirt! It’s certainly an interesting idea from the YumCha firm, but it will surely struggle in the British market. A cup of tea is a quintessential British tradition,
but if price and taste are both acceptable, who knows? Guy Woodall, who owns YumCha, believes his spray-on tea can become traditional in time. Mr Woodall says: “It was really about trying to make a better cup of tea. Of course, there’s an element of convenience, and not having a soggy tea bag to get rid of.
“But for me, it wouldn’t have been worth it if we couldn’t deliver a better cup of tea than an ordinary cuppa - and that’s what we’re trying to do - in a matter of seconds.” Since launching the spray in August, the firm says it has struggled to keep up with demand, and is looking to scale-up production.

Severe anxiety can cause men to get cancer
FALLING INTO AUTUMN HAIR By Carl Pattison
By Val Sainsbury
LADIES, this Autumn’s hair colours are coming your way, and there’s no escaping the fact that uniform colours will be the most-sought-after. These are the clear, no-fuss shades that look - and feel - natural, yet are straight out of your salon’s colour selection. Blondes will be toned down a notch, with Baby Blonde and Honeys being the most favoured, after our scorching summer here. Blondes can look so dry if they get too “bleached-out” looking. Try adding back in gold and beige, to restore those lost tones. Your browns, too, can
MEN who suffer from severe anxiety are twice as likely to die from cancer than men who do not. But women with the same mental health condition were at no greater risk.
fade, so liven things up with a deep chocolate. Keep those ends a warmer caramel, to create interest and shine. Browns shouldn’t look gingery. Instead, try dashing in a splash of mahogany to really warm up the shade, and create depth to your favourite brown. Autumn always sees the return of coppers, but try not to go too orangey. Look for those that contain gold, so you don’t overdo it. Coppers should look bronzy, rather than
brassy. This season’s look is healthy and full of shine, with not a dry strand in sight. This can only be obtained with the correct blend of colours, which are available from your salon. Consult us at Robot for our free, no obligation, colour-matching service that will suggest your ideal tone, and avoid any mistakes. This matters to us, because no cut is totally complete with adding that finishing touch of a great colour.
Your capsule collection By Carl Pattison IF there is one thing a woman must have to dress well, it’s a sense of fashion; a feeling of what item goes with what, and how to piece together your capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe consists of the basic items you need to dress for most occasions. For example, your little black dress, jeans, shirts and tops. These, with a few other items, will help you piece together your wardrobe. They will give you the flexibility to “add in” fashionable, in-season items, without having to replace all your clothes every season. If there are at least 20 capsule items in your
collection, you have something to work around. These should be timeless classics, which you will be wearing for years. So, spend a little more on these items, and mix in your everyday fashions, to keep it all on-trend. There’s no price you can put on clothing to make you look good. You need to have the knowledge of how to put things together. Throwing money at an expensive dress won’t
make you look good if it doesn’t compliment you - or your figure. Wearing something cheaper can look better, as long as it’s cut to fit you, and the colouring does something for you, too. I was in an expensive shopping mall, full of empty designer shops, at the weekend. Yet the clothes looked no different from those of their cheaper counterparts. You can look amazing for very little money. Just plan your items carefully, and don’t panic-buy! Try to think about what your new clothes will look like with the rest of your collection, and never buy on impulse. HAPPY SHOPPING!
A study, funded by the Medical Research Council and Cancer Research UK, suggests that anxious men could be likelier to “self-medicate” their anxiety by drinking and smoking more than women both factors which increase the prospects of getting cancer. Women may also be quicker at going to the doctor; thus, allowing the cancer to be detected earlier and making it easier to treat. The study, featuring 15,938 Britons, looked at those who had also been diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), characterised by excessive, uncontrollable worry about many areas of life, said the researchers. Symptoms can include muscle-tension, insomnia, an inability to concentrate and restlessness. And a total of 126 men (1.8% in the study) and 215 women (2.4%) were found to have the disorder. Over a 15-year, followup period, researchers found that the men with GAD were twice as likely to die of cancer
than men unaffected by anxiety. Yet there was no greater likelihood of anxious women succumbing to cancer. Olivia Remes, a mental-health researcher at the University of Cambridge, presented her findings to Vienna’s European College of Neuropsychopharmacology Congress. Ms Remes said: “In the past, there have been inconclusive studies of the relationship between cancer and anxiety. However, our study is the largest one to look at this relationship. “We found that men with generalised anxiety disorder are more than twice as likely to die of cancer as men without this condition. “This holds true, even after taking into account the range of additional factors, such as age, major chronic diseases, serious mental illnesses, smoking, alcohol, physical activity, and medications. “But women did not show this association between anxiety and cancer.” The mental-health researcher added: “The work shows that anxiety is associated with cancer deaths in men, but we can’t say that one causes the other. “It is possible that men with anxiety have lifestyles, or other risk fac-
tors that increase their cancer chances, which we did not account for completely. “However, this association does raise questions, and society might need to consider ‘anxiety’ as a warning signal for poor health. “Researchers, policymakers and clinicians don’t give enough importance to anxiety, and this needs to change.” And she warned: “A large number of people are affected by anxiety, and its potential effects on health are substantial. “This study shows that anxiety is more than just a personality trait; it is a disorder that may be associated with risk of death from conditions such as cancer.” Her findings were supported by Professor David Nutt, of Imperial College, a former Government adviser on drugs. Professor Nutt, a former president of the ECNP, said: “As a psychiatrist who used to run one of the very few clinics in the UK specialising in the treatment of people with severe anxiety disorders, these results do not surprise me. “The intense distress these people suffer, often on a daily basis, is usually associated with a great deal of bodily stress. “That is bound to have a major impact on many physiological processes, including immune supervision of cancerous cells. “As the authors point out, other factors such as self-medication with tobacco and alcohol are also likely to be involved.” He added: “I fully support the authors’ statement that much more information and investment need to be given to the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders.”

An Elite win for Palms A IF we were giving out an early-season, Most Improved Team award in the Direct Telecom Pool League, it would probably go to Division One’s Palms A.
Their run of form has seen them climb to second spot after another fine performance over bar rivals Palms Elite. Apart from one horror night against Gaffers B, they have had a fine start to the season. The key to their success so far has been the way they finish the matches. On numerous occasions, they have been trailing, only to rally late on - and this week was no different. The Palms derby was tight early on. Graeme, Elite captain for the night, took the first frame, only for the A team to go 2-1 ahead. Simon, who has been a fine signing for the A team, had a half-hour to forget as, somehow, he grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory twice! His back-to-back setback gave Elite a brief lead. The A team took frame six to level, only to lose the next to give Elite a 4-3 lead. However, that would be their last setback. Roscoe took the eighth to again level proceedings, before his side found an extra gear. Some cool pots, and a few loose ones from the opponents, gave them
a richly-deserved 8-4 win, second place … and a few weeks’ bragging rights! Phoenix Potters will be kicking themselves for allowing Palms A to sneak past them, but to be fair, they had a tricky away trip to Los Cristianos and Dreamers A. Both teams have made good starts to the season, and, on the night, there was nothing to choose between them. The first session ended 2-2, and, when the next went the same way to make the score 4-4, the outcome was inevitable. The final four frames were even tenser than the previous four, and any mistake could let either team in. But that didn’t happen. It was two frames each again and the points were shared. Treehouse A are another side who lost ground in the title chase, but they did have an away game against current league leaders Gaffers A. The home side got into their stride early and soon took a 3-1 lead. Scott then beat Bangkok Kev to make it 3-2. But that was as good as it got as Gaffers A hit top gear, taking the next five frames and three more points. That proved to be a big setback to the Treehouse hopes of, maybe, launching a title challenge. It was an interesting night at the bottom of the table as Bluebell A hosted fellow-strugglers Gaffers B. The home side

took a quick two-frame lead, only for their opponents to level. From then on, it became a real back-andforth game as both teams took turns at leading. But neither could make a breakthrough and the game was drawn - a point each not really favouring either side. Rewind A, another team struggling for points, were again without their French contingent for the trip to Amarilla Golf to face Terrace Roosters. The home side made the better start as they continued a decent run of form, moving into a 3-1 lead, Wilf and Andy

then levelled the contest with frames for Rewind A, to leave it allsquare at the halfway stage. Unfortunately, the Rewind A wheels then came off as Roosters took four games in a row to reach the finish line first, moving themselves up to mid-table. Exiles A were at home against Terrace Bantams, who were feeling confident after pulling off an early-season transfer coup, adding Paul from Hammers A to their ranks (the deal has been checked and no bungs were involved!). However, the home side started stronger and soon found themselves with a 3-1 lead, aided by a couple of flukes, but they all count! Adi, the Bantams chauffeur, then bought Pete and Sparky off the subs’ bench, and the move worked as they took the next four frames to lead 5-3, going into the final session. Stash chinned Marky P for the second time to put the

home side back in it. Maybe it was karma for the earlier flukes, but Ben then put the black in early and the Bantams had at least a draw. They didn’t settle for that though, because Sparky and new-boy Paul took the final frames for a fine win, giving Paul three from three! In Division Two, it will be a proper title scrap this season with at least five teams in with a good shout - six if Splash Bar can find a bit of form. Picasso’s A currently lead the way and, though Captain Fran is away (the team’s ears have had a break as well), they have continued their fine start. This week saw them at Palms Rebels, a side trying to find their feet in this league. But Picasso’s now have a season under their belt, and it showed. The visitors took an early lead, and once in front, they are difficult to catch. They were 5-1 and then 6-2 up before the Rebels launched a comeback. They took a few frames, but the leaders had enough in the tank for the win. In Chayofa, Treehouse B hosted second-place James Hammers C, who made the early

running as they raced to a 4-0 lead. The home side faced a struggle to recover from that, but they stemmed the tide by taking a couple of frames in the middle session. But when PJ lost to Ken H, it was game over and three more points to Hammers C in their bid to catch Picasso’s A. Splash Bar, attempting to get into the title mix, were up against Exiles B and there was a cagey start as the teams shared the opening four frames. The home side responded in style, digging deep to win an impressive seven frames on the bounce, which secured the win and the points. If they can continue this form, they could yet become title contenders. Bluebell B, also keeping pace with the leaders, were away against an improving Hoppys A team. As always, the first few frames were tense, close affairs as nobody wants to make early mistakes, but the visitors were the better side on the night. They picked up a few early frames, opened up a slender lead, and, as they continued to play well, the lead grew and they soon potted the points.

The Macs max it out!
SCRUFFY Macs, four points clear at the Division 1 summit, look to be in a strong position. But the three chasing teams all have a game in hand and will fancy their chances. However, the Macs could soon be out of sight if they keep taking maximum points, as they did during last Friday’s encounter at Palms Sports Bar. Steve notched his first 180 for the visitors as they literally wiped the board! Pas O Nadas’ 6-2 catch-up match win over The Pub was notable because it didn’t include a Richard maximum, but Steve Sub and Andy helped the old fellow out with one apiece! The night turned into a doubly bad one for The Pub as they then entertained Exiles, and lost again, 5-3. With Daniel celebrating his 35th birthday, Gaffers’ visit to Ourplace Playboys, the home of Jagermeister, turned into a bit of a party night. Only DJ Gooner Tezza had anything to shout about as he
fired in his second 180 during Gaffers’ 5-3 victory. I’m sure he was doing a lot more shouting after Saturday evening’s football result! Phoenix bar took the first three points at home to Spear Chuckers, and were looking good with Mitch to play next. But the match then swung around as he lost a close game to Graham, which spurred the Chuckers on to claim a hard-fought draw. Match of the day in Division 2 came at the Tavern, who hosted local rivals Emerald Lounge. It was no surprise that the match went all the way to a deciding trebles leg, which the Tavern held to take a 5-3 win. Cameron was on very good form and hit his first 180 for the green machine! Second-placed Sundowners also won by the same margin, although they already had five points when Pas O Nadas B took the last rubber, while Picassos almost got the win at Rood, but the Ya Ya gang claimed

Managers’ food for thought
THE weekend saw one or two teams really show what they are capable of in terms of results. And some high-scoring games led to a high point-scoring week in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League.
But the aspiring managers have food for thought because one or two of the more influential players have picked up knocks. Do
you transfer them out, or hope they recover quickly? Also, have any of the managers been speaking to undercover reporters this week? Liverpool were the point-scoring team of the week, with three players making appearances. Burnley and Arsenal were not far behind with two players, and the rest of the team came from Southampton, Spurs, Swansea and Man City. The outstanding players were Liverpool’s Lallana, and Totten-
ham’s Son, who both amassed 15 points. In the Oasis Fm Fantasy League there was no change at the top, with the Barrstard’s still top of the pile. But they have just a two-point lead from Simply The Best, managed by Lesley Bradley. It was a week for plenty of chopping and changing in the top 10, and the team of the week moved nicely into the top five. The Burghill Rovers, with Steve Snook in charge, recorded a week’s high of 80
points, the bulk of them coming from three of his midfielders and his striker. He has to thank Sanchez (14), De Bruyne (10), Lallana (15) and Aguero (26) his captain … not a bad 65-point haul from just four players! Running them close for team of the week was Gath Grey’s Lisheenkyle FC, who scored 74 points, with De Bruyne as the highscoring captain. What was so interesting about the performance is that the team are currently bottom
of the league. Prior to this decent tally, they had taken just 91 points, averaging 18
points per week. It just goes to show that one week can make a big difference.

Two faces of CDT By Colin Kirby
YOU never hear rock songs about Thursday nights, and CD Tenerife and Mallorca showed why as they tip-toed through a goalless draw of few thrills. But it should have been better!
Tenerife came in flying, off three straight wins. And with coach Pep Marti achieving legendary playing status at the other island club, he would surely have wanted to show how well he was mastering his new challenge Alas for the 8,019 faithful, it was frustrating to watch. The visiting reds, slumped at the bottom end of the table, set out their stall for a point right from the kick-off. Tenerife are finding goals hard to come by, but they’re mean at the back. Marti employed a same-again line-up after their 1-0 win at Almeria, with another whirl for the stodgy midfield, Crosas just in front of the back-four serving as a pivot. There’s not much creative spark there, and it was a sensible strategy for an away game - but as exciting as Horlicks for the fans at home. Main striker Choco Lozano had a quiet game, but still featured in the few clear chances in the first half. An early header over seemed wasteful, and he got no joy from the ref when he was clearly pushed over in the penalty area after 20 minutes. The crowd-pleaser of the moment is Amath N’Diaye, a speedy leftwinger on loan from Atletico Madrid. The Senegalese player, who likes to take players on, needs to vary his raids to go inside and outside his markers. Dani Hernandez, in the home goal, could have brought his DVD player and box set. Thankfully, he was still awake on the half-hour when Mallorca mustered their first effort on goal, and the Venezuela international made light work of
CD Tenerife 0 Mallorca 0
turning the shot aside. At least the second half was better, though, Tenerife realising that Mallorca were there for the taking, even with Moutinho, last season’s Santa Cruz loanee, having a good game. Amath set up Choco who dragged his shot wide, and Suso also played provider to the front man. But this time, a weak header merely tickled the keeper’s gloves. Aaron Niguez replaced Crosas in an attempt to open up the midfield. There was some melodrama as Mallorca’s Raillo, who went down after a soft tackle, staged a full-blown, one-man play. His bench sent on trainers, medics, stretchers and, I believe, even a vet at one point, but the recovery was miraculous. At least it was another clean-sheet for the Tenerife defence, which included Raul Camara, completing a century of games in the white shirt. So, a few days earlier, we had established that CD Tenerife were rocksolid at the back but incapable of scoring goals. The trouble is, you have to expect the unexpected following the
blanquiazul. Within 15 minutes of kick-off at Mirandes, the small band of travelling fans were shell-shocked by a 2-0 deficit in a crazy game that ended as a 3-2 home victory. Those first two goals were down to comedy defending that would have shamed a Sundaymorning pub match. Firstly, Bustos strolled through a wide-open space as Raul Camara and German drifted aside. Then the usually-reliable German was nutmegged as Bustos popped the ball between his legs to score. It took until the second half for Tenerife to rally, Suso, showing his usual dedication to the cause set up Choco Lozano to reduce the arrears and offer hope. But six minutes later,
Mirandes 3 CD Tenerife 2
Mirandes regained their cushion with a powerful long shot from Guarrotxena, who spent last season in Santa Cruz. At least Tenerife showed resistance, pulling the score back to 3-2 with a first goal for sub Jouini, who arrived from Tunisia just before the transfer window closed. In the space of four days, the feel-good factor had evaporated and coach Marti will be scratching his head, trying to make sense of the recent form reversal. Getafe, who are Sunday’s Santa Cruz visitors (kick-off 5pm), have struggled so far. But they sacked their coach after the weekend, so anything is possible. CD Marino 1 Arucas 0 MARINO are having a fine season in the
fourth tier, having just avoided relegation last term. And, thanks to new coach Toni Dumpiereez and a few new faces, they are top of their Tercera Division section. A hard-fought 1-0 home win over Gran Canaria’s Arucas continued their unbeaten form, putting them two points clear. Kevin Castro was first to test the Arucas keeper, but his header lacked the direction to beat him. Arucas had a couple of hopeful breaks from Killiam and Alex, before Mendy beat a cluster of away defenders to direct a bullet header into their net with 18 minutes gone. Rodo could have levelled soon after but dragged his shot
wide. Arucas were a big, strong side, so full credit to a mainly young Marino team, who closed them down well and had the safe hands of keeper Cicovic to pluck any threatening balls out of the air. After a rare water break - it was blisteringly hot - Marino came back looking the more refreshed. Valiente broke through, but his pass wasn’t quite good enough for Adan to get in a shot. Adan kept battling into dangerous positions, and a long-range shot he unleashed wasn’t far off the target. Arucas showed they were still a threat, and a raid down the wing could have caught Marino out, had Brad Mills not cleared with a firm block. There was another warning just before the break when Arucas had the ball in the Marino net before the ref ruled it out, giving a home free-kick. Cicovic opened the second half with another high take to foil the Gran Canarians. The visiting coach had already been booked, and, after casting further doubt on the ref ’s abilities, he was sent to the stand. There was definitely some bad feeling in the Arucas side, who were crunching in the tackles and fired up. Ammed came on for Valiente, and, with Adan departing soon after for Fran, he took over the central striking role. Arucas finished the game a man down when Cone was sent off after 59 minutes. But they still fancied a point. Cisco did well to cover a low shot from Ivi, and when the action switched to the other end, Ammed turned his defender expertly before firing a shot that was stopped by a post. As the seconds ticked away, Arucas broke again when Killiam robbed Fran. But he was snuffed out by the Marino defence to seal the win.

Palace’s Wilfried Zaha and Scott Dann are expected back in the next couple of weeks, but Loic Remy is out until November with a thigh muscle injury. Best bet: Everton to win 2-1 at 8/1
Form Swansea: WLDLLL Liverpool: WDWWWW Head-to-head: Liverpool have won five and lost one of their last six meetings with Swansea. Team news: For Swansea, Nathan Dyer remains sidelined until November with an ankle injury, while Federico Fernandez joins him on the injury list with a groin strain. Best bet: Liverpool to win 3-1 at 11/1
Hull v Chelsea
Form: Hull: WLDLWL Chelsea: WWDLWL Head-to-head: Chelsea have won seven and drawn two of their nine historic meetings with Hull. Team news: Hull’s defensive crisis continues. Michael Dawson is still a few weeks from a return, while Alex Bruce is out until December. Moses Obubajo and Allan McGregor are both sidelined until January, as is Greg Luer. The only bright side is the potential return of Brian Lenihan. Chelsea captain John Terry could return, but Marko van Ginkel and Kurt Zouma remain sidelined. Best bet: Chelsea to win 3-1 at 12/1

Leicester v Southampton
Form Leicester: LWWLLW Southampton: DLWWWW Head-to-head: Leicester have won three and lost three against Southampton Team news: Leicester’s title defence has not start well, and they need to get back to winning ways. Mahrez and Vardy have not yet shown the form of last season, and must be hoping that Kasper Schmeichel is given the all-clear to return in goal. The Saints have also made a sluggish start to the season but a good win against West Ham last time out has filled them with confidence. If they can continue that, they will start moving up the table. Best bet: 1-1 draw at 8/1
Tottenham v Man City Form Spurs: WLWWWW Man City: WWWWWD Head-to-head: Spurs have won two, drawn one and lost three against Man City in recent fixtures Team news: With Spurs sitting in second spot, this gives them a great opportunity to inflict City’s first defeat of the season. They are without the injured Harry Kane. But if Son can continue his goal-scoring form, they may not miss him too much. City are looking to continue their six-game winning League run, but they’ll be without talisman midfielder Kevin De Bruyne out for at least three weeks. With Raheem Sterling in form and Aguero back in the side, City are difficult to beat. Best bet: Man City to win 2-0 at 7/1
Burnley v Arsenal Form Burnley: WLLDLW Arsenal: WDWWWW Head-to-head: Arsenal have won five and lost one against Burnley in their last six meetings Team news: Burnley had an excellent win against Watford and are finding their feet again at this level. Hendricks, after a good Euros with Wales, has come in and he looks a decent addition to the ranks for Sean Dyche. The Gunners are coming into this game on the back of a fine victory against Chelsea and Basel, but are still plagued with injury concerns. They need their new signings to get up to pace, especially striker Lucas Perez, who needs goals. Granit Xhaka has started well and could be key to a title challenge. Best bet: Arsenal to win 3-1 at 12/1
