Survivals and arrivals Continued from Front The week started with Monarch airlines finally settling financial concerns over its immediate future by agreeing a £165m investment from Greybull Capital, its majority shareholder. The fresh financing has allowed the airline to renew its vital membership of the Air Travel Organiser’s’ Licence (Atol) scheme, which refunds customers if a travel firm collapses. It also means the airline can invest in new aircraft. Greybull Capital, also known for its investment in Scunthorpe’s steelworks, bought a majority stake in Monarch in 2014, with an investment of £125m. Andrew Swaffield, the Monarch Group’s Chief Executive said: “It is testament to the extensive effort by all parties, over the past weeks and months, that we are able to announce the largest investment in our 48-year history, as well as the renewal of our Atol licences.” The airline industry is enduring tough times but this news was a boost. Like its competitors, Monarch has struggled with declining demand for package holidays to destinations like Egypt and Turkey in the wake of terrorist attacks, as well as protracted air traffic disruption in France. Monarch, which employs nearly 3,000 people and is based at Luton Airport, said in a statement that the £165m cash injection was the biggest in its history, adding: “As a result of this investment, Monarch has successfully renewed its ATOL licences from
the CAA for the next 12 months, and funded future growth plans. “In October 2014, Monarch announced an order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft, with options for a further 15 planes. The first of these aircraft is due to be delivered in 2018. “The arrival of these state-of-the-art, fuelefficient aircraft, in less than two years, will enable Monarch to continue to provide passengers with a bestin-class, in-flight experience, and allow the company to enjoy significant operational-cost savings.” Chief Executive Andrew Swaffield added: “I’d like to thank the CAA, our shareholders, partners, loyal customers and the team at Monarch for helping us to achieve this successful outcome. “We are now firmly focused on the future as a stronger Monarch.” The security of the airlines future is great news for Tenerife, and,
of course, the airline industry. Nobody wanted an airline going bust, especially such a well-loved one. However, the industry remains a cutthroat business and there could still be some turbulence ahead. At a conference in Dubai a few days ago, Swaffield spoke of the issues still facing Monarch. They include the weakening Pound, the UK Government’s ban on flights to Sharm el Sheikh, plus a slump in demand for some destinations such as Turkey, because of terrorism fears. Then there is the constant price-war between short-haul and so-called holiday air-
lines. The recent bad publicity for Monarch will probably lead to an aggressive advertising campaign, featuring even lower fares. The cheap price of fuel will help, but discounted seat prices do not put jam on the bread. Monarch enjoys strong customer loyalty, and it remains a genuine big boy in the holiday market. The company is still expected to post a healthy profit when its annual figures are announced soon. And the big cash injection will help them trade strongly into the new year. The concern is that some customers will not take the chance of Monarch being in the same position in a few
months. That said, if they book with another airline and still come to Tenerife, it’s no loss for our Island. Meanwhile the eagerly-anticipated opening of the Hard Rock Hotel in Playa Paraiso is now just hours away. Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife will offer “familyfriendly and adult-only experiences through its five-star facilities and services, while reflecting the immerse music environment for which Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos are known”. There are 624 rooms, including 260 suites, which will be split across two towers, named Oasis and Nirvana. The Rock Royalty Level, on the 13th, 14th and 15th floors of the Nirvana Tower, will house “rock-star-worthy suites, offering exclusive services such as a private concierge, VIP check-in and access to an exclusive lounge on level 13th.” The hotel will be filled by Hard Rock Interna-
tional’s priceless collection of music memorabilia, which will be displayed prominently throughout the hotel. The Hard Rock Hotel has three pools, along with access to an artificial salt-water lagoon, and a recreation area featuring a concert arena, main stage for visiting artists and a beach club, complete with Balinese beds. Additionally, a 546sq/m Convention Centre, with state-of-the-art technology, will host up to 525 people for meetings and events. Guests will also have a choice of five restaurants, offering a selection of culinary delights from around the world, including traditional Spanish flavours at tapas restaurant Ali-Olé, modern Asian restaurant Narumi, and steakhouse Montauk. There will also be an all-day buffet, a sports bar called 3rd Half and The Beach Club, right on the edge of the seawater lagoon.

King confident KING Felipe VI will begin a new round of talks with political leaders on 24-25th October to establish whether Mariano Rajoy, or any other candidate, can possibly become Spain’s new Prime Minister.
The position will be decided at a subsequent investiture vote in Congress, and the political calendar mandates that this session must be held before 31st October, or the country will, automatically, go to another general election in December - the country’s unprecedented third in a year! If so, polls are forecasting low turn-out for the probably Christmas Day vote, and a similarly-fragmented outcome, as Spaniards
Just chewing things over!
More people are leaving Canaries OFFICIAL statistics confirm that the Canaries has again become the land of emigrants, with more people leaving than staying.
THERESA May had an official meeting yesterday (Thursday) with Spain’s acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy at Madrid’s Palacio de la Moncloa.
Firmly on the agenda, among other subjects over a working lunch, was a discussion between the British PM and Rajoy about the impact of Brexit on the two countries. The pair have already been in touch twice: an official conversation
by telephone following Mrs May’s selection as PM in July, and then in China during the G20 summit. Each time, they stressed the need to protect all British and Spanish citizens from any negative Brexit fall-out, although the touchy subject of cosovereignty for Gibraltar - the man in the middle - did not come into it. May has been on a rapid tour of Europe, taking in Denmark and the Netherlands, as she attempts to bolster support ahead of Brexit crunch talks next Spring.
become increasinglyweary of their bickering politicians. The only politician who stands a genuine chance is Rajoy, who has been heading a caretaker government since December 2015, when the first general election took place If the monarch’s talks with party leaders suggest there is enough support for any one candidate, the investiture session could be held on 26-27th October, with a second runoff vote held on 28-29th October - just in time to meet the deadline. So far, Rajoy has been unable to attract enough support from other parties to get himself reinstated, leading to a 10-month stalemate. But the recent resignation of the Socialist Party (PSOE) head means that the main opposition group could be open to an abstention at the investiture
The migratory balance - the difference
between the number of people who settle in the archipelago and those who leave - added up to a negative total in 2015. That’s despite improved economic conditions and higher employment last year. The number of leavers was higher than those settling, for the first time
since 2002, when records began. Figures show that emigrations exceeded immigrations by 4,345, although that was not the case on all the islands. The main islands with the largest populations - led the leaving process. Gran Canaria recorded a negative balance of 5,924 peo-
ple, and Tenerife 2,034. La Palma, had just 215 more departures than arrivals. The other islands are still increasing the population: Fuerteventura has 2,057 more inhabitants, thanks to immigration, while positivity exists in Lanzarote, 1.456, La Gomera, with 244, and El Hierro, up 71.
Paraglider’s miracle A BRITISH paraglider escaped certain death after getting caught up in power lines during a Tenerife holiday drama.
The unnamed 48-yearold man was rescued by firefighters after becoming entangled near the town of Los Realejos, in the North. Rescuers spread a huge canvas below him before he dropped, with
a certain degree of accuracy, several feet to safety without a scratch. Onlookers could be heard screaming as
he narrowly missed the ground and fell on to a corner of the canvas. One woman was filmed
asking if the Brit was okay as he was helped to safety, and bystanders applauded spontaneously when it was confirmed that he was fully intact. The Brit is understood to have taken off from the nearby hillside of La Corona, a favourite spot for paragliders. It is regarded as one of Tenerife’s favourite places for the high-thrill sport by novices and experienced paragliders alike.

of PM outcome vote, which would effectively deliver the position to Rajoy. The Socialists are still split between those who favour abstention and those who oppose it. If the latter prevail, Rajoy would lose the investiture vote … and a new national election would be inevitable! On Tuesday, congressional speaker Ana Pastor met with the King and announced that she would speak to party leaders later
that day. And on Thursday (20th Oct), she will send Felipe VI a list of the representatives who will meet with him on 24-25th October. Meanwhile, acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is getting used to the idea that even if he succeeds in being reinstated after a 10-month stalemate, his Popular Party (PP) will need to change the way it handles politics. And he is conveying that fact to his fellow
party members. Last weekend, Rajoy told a meeting of senior PP officials that even in the event of continuing in office for a second term, the new government will have to show “patience and humility” because it will be very much alone. The new, fragmented scenario that emerged out of the 20th December general election, thanks to the appearance of the left-leaning, anti-austerity Podem-
Schools’ book-loan system falls short THOUSANDS of students in the Archipelago are still awaiting textbooks, a month after starting school.
The reason is because the Ministry of Education and Universities has not finished implementing the new loan system, which went into operation this school year. This covers the students from all noncompulsory, educational stages with lower economic resources. Families eligible for this course-book loan scheme are, however, benefiting from the “zero quota” in school canteens, which means, essentially, free school meals. This scheme is for
families of up to four members, with an annual income below 6,390 euros. The Education Minister estimates that 42,000 students on this programme will benefit soon, but he argues that “many schools have bought the books with the remnants of the previous year’s budget”. Still, the Federation of Associations of Parents of Tenerife (Fitapa) estimated this week that, despite the solutions that will be enacted, more than 30,000 children are still without books. Fitapa President Eusebio Dorta laments the delay, which is affecting the centres’ functioning, and hopes the situation will be resolved next week. Similarly, a representative of the parents’
association said: “This is a good initiative. But today, when they are already conducting tests, the books have not arrived and we have not even published the final list of beneficiaries. “The process is stalled and it is impossible to know when they will arrive.” The Ministry said the absence of books was down to increasing the number of applicants, and the processing period required. It also said it was working to solve the problem as soon possible. The Education Department which insists there is no economic problem, has contacted the schools and centres to explain that the payment of the books is “guaranteed”.
os and the centre-right Ciudadanos, and then again at the repeat vote of 26th June, ensures that the PP does not have the kind of absolute majority it has enjoyed in the past. And nor has it managed to strike any enduring deals with other parties that might ensure stability during the legislative term. Instead, a hypothetical Rajoy administration would have to reach vote-by-vote arrangements in Congress with opposition parties. Yet some, like the Socialist Party (PSOE) and Podemos, are battling each other for control over the political left, while dealing with internal battles of their own. In the new, uncertain political scenario unfolding, Rajoy’s chief strategy seems to be to tread lightly, trying not to put his foot in it. He has already told PSOE leaders to take their time to decide on
the issue ripping the main opposition party apart: whether to vote against Rajoy at an investiture session in Congress, or whether to abstain; thereby, passively, delivering the government to him. Even if abstention wins the day, the PSOE has already warned that it will not enter into a governing coalition with the PP. Alternately, if the Socialists vote down Rajoy at the investiture vote, the country will automatically go to that third election in December. Meanwhile Ciudadanos, which has alternately attempted governing deals with the PSOE and the PP, will also refuse to enter into a coalition with Rajoy in the light of the Gürtel corruption trial, which began last week. The PP is hoping for favourable rulings that might convince Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera to back the con-
servatives some time in the future. Rajoy and his team have been reiterating that they remain open to all types of collaboration “with the PSOE and other parties”. Pablo Casado, the conservative spokesman, said about the PP, PSOE and Ciudadanos: “I think all three parties have a lot in common.” For now, though, Ciudadanos leader Rivera keeps insisting that his party will not govern with Rajoy because of his association with Gürtel and other highprofile corruption cases, like the executive credit-cards at Caja Madrid, which is also at the trial stage. “If there is no renewal within the PP, we will not enter into a coalition government,” warned Ciudadanos Vice-Secretary general José Manuel Villegas. “Rajoy is a master of maintaining the status quo.”

Third motorway lane an absolute priority! WHAT is the most important singular action that Tenerife requires? The Circle of Businessmen and Professionals South of Tenerife (CEST) have been asking that question this week.
Forget the completion of the insular ring road, the second runway at Tenerife South airport, and the Insular Motor Circuit. The port of Granadilla? No! the Circle maintains that the No.1 priority is the third lane of the
motorway here in the South. “This is a piece of work that should have been finalised some time ago,” said a spokesman. But, for some reason or another, it has been delayed for far too long.” The CEST also has a negative view on the region’s road network, which, it says, is in a poor state. And members are demanding action - and fast! “Only the new South hospital could be on a par with the importance of the third lane.” added the spokesman. “But it seems that action has been lost in other battles for financing.
“Meanwhile, traffic jams grow here at peak times and now, at times, when it isn’t even a peak time! “We are in a tourist region - the main source of the economy of Tenerife - and with a resident population constantly growing. But our motorway and roads portray an unfortunate image.” A year ago, the Cabildo agreed that the third lane was a priority, but that view has soften recently. Currently, there is a resurfacing project on the section between Las Chafiras, San Miguel de Abona, and Adeje. This project is included among the “necessary
works of road infrastructure - a co-operation agreement between the Central Government and the Government of the Canary Islands, on motorways”. The CEST is happy that this is being done, but says it is not enough. “It is some improvement,” admitted the organisation’s Jaime González Cejas. “Sadly, and we mentioned it a couple of years ago, we are facing the difference between a paper idea and real action. “The Government has spent some money, but we have been waiting 11 years for essential work in the South, and we must get that third lane.”
Fonsalia port a step nearer? Expats to receive Vote For Life lift EXPATS will be given a “vote for life” under plans which will lift the 15-year limit that has prevented the three million Britons living abroad from voting in General Elections.
The move could give the Tories an electoral boost because many Brits living abroad are pensioners, and more likely to back Theresa May’s party. But it will need a vote in both Houses of Parliament before it applies to future general elections. And it could face opposition in the House of Lords, where the Tories do not have a majority. The policy was in the Conservative party’s 2015 election manifesto, but then Prime Minister David Cameron failed
to act on it, meaning millions of expats were barred from voting in the EU referendum. During the EU campaign, a group of expats launched a High Court bid to overturn the 15year rule, which bars those who have been living overseas for more than 15 years from voting in UK elections. The campaign was led by World War Two veteran Harry Shindler, 95, who retired to Italy. He claimed they would be affected the most by the EU vote, and said the 15-year rule should be lifted temporarily. Mr Shindler, reacting to the announcement to end the ban, told the BBC: “It seems the government are moving [on this], and that’s good.” The 15-year rule meant around 700,000 UK nationals living on the continent missed out on being able to having a say in the EU referendum, on 23rd June.
ONE of the west coast’s longest-drawn-out projects has been given a timely nudge from the Canary Islands Government, which has approved the addition of 6.4 hectares of land vital to the 200-millioneuro scheme. The small village of Fonsalia, between Alcala and Playa San Juan, is the closest Tenerife land to La Gomera. Plans for a large-scale port have been discussed since 1995, but physical progress has been made in recent years only. A new desalination plant now sits on the coast, and the port will be built next to this. The new ring-road extensions include a link to the edge of Fonsalia, where a roundabout will be added to steer traffic down. Puertos Canarios, which already has 40 ports, shelters, and marinas across the Canary Islands, will also manage the Fonsalia Port.

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
One last time… NOVEMBER 3rd 2013. I remember that Monday because everyone was cleaning up after the thunderstorm of the previous day.
As we all know, rain is rare in the South of Tenerife. But when the Autumn showers arrive, they normally leave a mark. Many parts of the South were under water, Guaza especially, and there were long tail-backs on the TF1 by Las Chafiras. It was more a pond than a motorway. That Monday was also my first day as Editor of this newspaper. I’ll be honest with you, the thought of having to fill 56 pages by Thursday evening had given me a few sleepless nights. Thankfully, it was quite a newsy week. The storms were a good start and Remembrance Sunday was an obvious front page. Also that week, the taxi drivers voted for a strike, the President of the Canary Islands was demanding more money from the Spanish Government … and an ambitious plan to open a Hard Rock Hotel
was announced. Timing huh! Looking back at issue 828, I am struck by how innocent it was. When I took the editorship, I wanted to make the CW meatier. Strong news stories, local and national politics. A feel for what was happening on our Island and in our country. And, 147 issues later, Canarian Weekly looks, feels and reads like a different beast. This week, I went through all the front pages of the last three years and was struck by a tremendous sense of pride. To see the exclusive stories and interviews, the big names and events we have covered over the last 36 months, was something I will never forget. So as I finish my final issue as Editor I would like to say thank you to all the contributors, advertisers and staff who have helped make this newspaper a success. Also my heartfelt love and respect go out to John ‘Tex’ Hennessey and Joe Price. Their help, hard work and tolerance were above and beyond the call of duty. Until next time…

A grand gesture from La Caleta
MANUEL Luis Morales, President of the 2016 La Caleta Fiestas committee, and Vice -President Estrella Jorge, have delivered goods worth 1,000 euros to Adeje’s Social Welfare Department at the local Food Bank.
The goods, including baby-care items such as nappies, baby food, formula, etc, were gratefully received by Special Welfare Councillor Isabel Fernández González. “It’s these kind of actions that help us reach all families in need in the Adeje borough, and, in particular, those most vulnerable, most in need - the children,” she said. The local Council has operated the Food Bank for a number of years, ensuring that families in the borough have access to basics during hard times. As well as food, the
Council, through the Social Welfare Department, can help with other financial problems, using a team of professional assessors and social welfare officers.
In addition to this assistance, other departments are also helping needy families, providing such items as travel and book grants from the Education Department
for local students. There is also social and training programmes, created by the Employment Department and designed for those in danger of social exclusion.

Height of stupidity A CHEEKY chap is trying to sue Norwegian Airlines after burning himself on an overheating ecigarette during a flight to New York.
Eric T Wilber describes himself as an author and really does have a creative reason for blaming the airline: he says they were at fault for letting him take the ciggie on board and charge it. He dozed off and awoke to find his ecigarette producing the wrong sort of smoke. He alerted the crew and dropped the offending article into a bucket of water. Now he wants unspecified damages for his “ordeal”. Norwegian Airlines refused to comment.
Ups and downs of new Canary firms A TOTAL of 258 new companies opened in the Canaries in August, which was a 3.2% increase against the same 2015 month. But 56 were dissolved - a rise of 12% from a year earlier - according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The new statistics reveal that in the whole of Spain, 6,403 new companies were formed in August - up 23.4% - and 1,236 (+3.8%) were dissolved. Regarding other communities, the Archipelago in August posted the smallest increase in new corporations, with the Community of Madrid’s extra 10.2% leading the way.

Olive oil price set to rocket THE production of olive oil has plummeted in the wake of a series of severe crop failures in the major growing countries, including Spain and Italy.
A leading supplier has warned that retailers, facing higher olive oil prices, could be forced to reduce shelf space for 100% Italian extra virgin olive oil because of another poor olive harvest. The Filippo Berio brand says that although Spain’s olive oil production is forecast to improve this year, the total estimated
global production of 2,750,000 tonnes will not meet the predicted demand, with tighter supplies also pushing up prices. And, because Italian production has remained low, the extra virgin olive oil price has increased daily since the end of August, and it is expected to continue rising. Britain’s shoppers now snap up around 62,000 tonnes a year 10 times the amount consumed in 1990 and the UK is now the world’s 10th-largest olive oil-consuming nation. Walter Zanre, managing director of Filippo Berio, told trade magazine The Grocer: “Dur-
ing the last four weeks, we have seen Italian extra virgin olive oil prices appreciate by over 10% - and it is still increasing. We fully expect to see a repeat of the 2014-15 situation.” The Grocer said the 2014-15 olive oil crop was so poor in Spain and Italy that there was no annual carryover of supply, which left bottlers with extremely low stocks. Italian production for the 2014-15 harvest came in at 222,000 tonnes. It rose in 201516 to 350,000 tonnes but it is forecast to fall again during the 2016-17 season to just 230,000 tonnes. The Filippo Berio
brand says that although Spanish olive oil production should improve this year, the total estimated global production of 2,750,000 tonnes is insufficient to meet demands. The current Italian crop has been affected by pests, the olive fly in particular. Mr Zanre told The Grocer: “In our region, Tuscany, forecasts are for less than 50% of normal crop.” Olive oil production is also struggling in other
areas of the world, with Greece, which has had similar pest problems to Italy, forecast to produce 220,000 tonnes of oil for 2016-17, compared with 300,000 tonnes the previous year. Italy and Greece are the “reservoir of quality extra virgin olive oil in the Mediterranean basin,” said Mr Zanre. Unfortunately, this low production could leave brands struggling to source good olive oil while the production problems continue.
Brit hiker found dead THE body of a British man, who went missing in June during a lengthy hike, has been found in the Almería province of HuércalOvera. David Oldman, 66, a former Leicester councillor, had challenged himself to walk from his home-town London to Gibraltar in stages. But he was last seen two Sundays ago as he headed for Albox, in Almería, after leaving Huércal-Overa five days before he was expected back in the English capital. Concerns grew when he failed to ring his mother, or board his flight home a few days later. His family issued a series of pleas on social media for help finding him, but an intensive four-week search had to be scaled back in
July after it came up with nothing. The part-time librarian, described as an “experienced and very fit walker”, had usually flown back home between each stage and his concerned family and friends set up a Facebook site, “David is Missing”. His niece, Gemma, said he had not rung any of his family, even his mother, after setting off for Albox. She said her uncle was an experienced hiker, very fit, and was following a painstakinglyprepared route from London’s Gibraltar House to the Rock of Gibraltar. The lengthy trek was fairly typical of how he spent his holidays. His body was found by hunters in the mountains near HuércalOvera.

Dead dolphin mystery WHEN a lifeless, 2.55-metre dolphin was spotted floating 500m out from the Granadilla coast last Saturday morning, it was quickly brought ashore for medical tests to determine the cause of death.
Granadilla Council has worked with the local police and beach lifeguards to make sure these rare finds are protected from public intervention, and not contaminated before they can be examined. The dolphin will be transferred to an environmental unit in Arico to determine how it died.
Now, where are my yellow bins?
SEVEN out of 10 Canarians claim to have recycling facilities in their home, and, along with domestic rubbish bins, most of us are said to have yellow containers for plastic, cans and cartons. In fact, the Archipelago homes on average, have a fraction short of three bins. This is the main conclusion, gleaned by a study of recycling habits by the Spanish and prepared by the Institute for Ecoembes Apolda. It is an environmental, non-profit organisation which promotes sustainability through recycling of household packaging.
And the report also assesses the factors that motivate citizens to separate rubbish properly. Caring for the environment (98%), being a good person (96.4%) and environmental awareness to preserve the
planet for future generations (94.7%) … these are the main reasons that inspire the Spanish to recycle. This percentage is in line with data published in January by the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS), which shows that 70% of Spaniards separated household rubbish by type of rubbish (organic, plastic and paper), while ensuring that 77% recycle glass containers and cardboard, paper and batteries. Conversely, among the reasons given for not recycling, also included in the Study Habits, are issues such as lack of space in their homes (14.4%).
click, click spend! THERE are six weeks to go before Black Friday, and Canarians seem prepared to spend, spend, spend! The National Institute of Statistics says 546,542 Canarians made a purchase over the Internet during the last 12 months, which adds up to 25.96% of the population and an increase of 22.39% over the past two years. This puts the Islands below the national average, which is
at 32.21%, even though we are making up ground. In recent years, there has been a steady growth of e-commerce as buying habits change in the Canaries. A study of website Cuponation.es during the last Black Friday shows that 4% of Canarians purchased Amazon purchases, 14% shopped with Chinese giant Aliexpress and 8% snapped up offers and products on eBay.
Brits in Spain in Benefit Fraud A Benalmádena resident and his UK accomplice who falsely claimed he was living in the UK have both been found guilty of benefit fraud.
British pensioner Antony McNamara made a claim for Pension Credit in 2011, despite working and living in Benalmádena on the Costa del Sol. On his claim he falsely stated that he lived in Heysham, England with his “sister” Margaret
Walsh and asked that his benefit be paid into her bank account as he did not have one of his own. Over the next four years his so-called sister would transfer his benefit money from her bank account to his, allowing McNamara to continue enjoying his Spanish lifestyle at the expense of the British taxpayer. Investigations carried out in 2015 by DWP fraud teams in the UK and Spain revealed that not only had McNamara been living and working in Spain for the past four years
and owned 50% of a property there, but also that his alleged “sister” was actually someone with whom he had been in a relationship with many years previously and had a child with. In June of this year the 70 year old pleaded guilty to benefit fraud totalling £15,147.90. He was handed a suspended sentence and ordered to repay the money in full. His fictional sister Margaret Walsh admitted one offence of lying to the investigator when he called to speak to McNamara
by saying that he had “just stepped out for a minute”, but denied assisting him by letting the DWP think he was living with her. However, after a trial at Liverpool Magistrates Court, she was found guilty on all charges of assisting McNamara in obtaining benefit by deception and was sentenced to 10 weeks electronic tagging and a curfew. Department for Work and Pensions Fraud Investigator David Topping, who worked on the case stated: “This case shows that people abroad
who set out to defraud the benefit system in the UK by claiming benefits they are clearly not entitled to, will be tracked down and dealt with in the courts. “The Department’s Fraud and Error Service take every allegation received very seriously and wherever possible will investigate and take appropriate action. “I would encourage anyone who knows of similar fraudsters in their communities to continue passing details through to our colleagues in Spain.”

Fish prizes, and no catch COUNCILLORS in Santa Cruz are casting their nets to land an artistic shoal of fish to adorn key points of the Tenerife capital, and the pick of the catch can earn the winning team or individual 1,000 euros. The Chicharro, a Blue Jack Mackeral, which is the capital city’s symbol, is the target of the search. The fish reflects the proud fishing tradition and already has its own, small statue just off Calle Castillo. But sites have already been agreed for eight more fibre-based models. Culture Councillor Jose Carlos Acha and sponsors Cepsa are inviting entries via the Council website and Facebook page, the finalists being chosen from an online vote. First prize for the designer is 1,000 euros, followed by 500 and 300 euros for the runners-up.
Air travellers in fear of stagparty boozers MEMBERS from two separate stagdo groups were arrested by Spanish police after getting “absolutely hammered” on a Ryanair flight from Edinburgh to Alicante.
Families are said to have cowered in their seats as the two parties went wild on the threehour, morning flight. A mother travelling with two children said a 10-year-old was struck on the head by a flying wine bottle, and fights broke out between the revellers. She also claimed many of them were “absolutely hammered” before the Ryanair flight took off, at 11.15am. Spanish cops awaited the groups at Alicante, but some of them had swapped clothes in a bid to confuse airline staff. A Ryanair spokesman confirmed that four passengers were removed and detained. He added: “We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour and the safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our No.1 priority.”

Facebook coughs up, or is it being honest? FACEBOOK, which expanded its UK business last year, paid £4.16m in UK corporation tax - a big increase on the £4,327 it paid in 2014, which prompted an outcry from campaigners. They argued that the social media network had paid too little, and critics may also be riled this time because the company will receive an £11m tax credit, which can be used to offset tax bills at a later date. The firm said it was “proud” to have grown its business in the UK, having posted taxable profit for the year to 31st December of about £20m, on which it paid tax at the standard corporation tax rate. Turnover more than doubled to £210m. The tax credit is the result of off-setting payments linked to its staff bonus scheme. Facebook said in March that it would no
longer route advertising sales through Ireland for its largest advertisers. That change, which took effect on 1st April, means the US company should start paying millions of pounds more in tax in the UK. A Facebook spokesperson said: “We are proud that in 2015, we have continued to grow our business in the UK, creating over 300 new, highly-skilled jobs. We pay all the taxes we are required to under UK law.” The figures were revealed in Facebook UK’s accounts, published in Companies House on Sunday. Richard Murphy, a chartered accountant and professor of practice in international political economy at the City University of London, said it was difficult to determine whether Facebook was paying
the right sum of tax in Britain. “Facebook’s UK accounts do not represent its real sales in this country, which are actually booked in Ireland, with their true value never being disclosed,” he insisted. “The Facebook UK accounts just record the costs it incurs in the UK, with a bit of profit added on to keep HMRC happy. That’s
not good enough in the current climate.” Prof Murphy added: “Facebook UK’s accounts are an exercise in opacity, when what we really need is transparency. If accountants continue to refuse to provide what users of accounts need, then it will be time for the government to act.” Tax specialist Jo Maugham QC said: “Facebook’s accounts are
rather opaque. But we can be confident that the structure of its business continues to be driven by the desire to make the smallest possible financial contribution to the public infrastructure it uses.” Business reporter Theo Leggett said: “When Facebook revealed it had paid just £4,327 in tax in 2014, there was a storm of protest from campaigners. Like other digitalera multi-nationals, it has come under fire for doing a great deal of business here, but paying very little into the national coffers. “The 2015 bill looks decidedly steeper, but it still appears to bear little relation to the amount of business actually being done by the company. “It is based entirely on revenues from engineering and marketing services, supplied to other
parts of the Facebook group. “But it will be different in future. The company agreed earlier this year to book sales to major UK advertisers in Britain, rather than Ireland - so they will be subject to tax here. “Although this won’t include sales made over the internet, it should still mean a much bigger payment is due for 2016. “That may go some way towards appeasing campaigners - and keeping the UK authorities at arms length.” Facebook employed 682 people in the UK last year, up from 362 in 2014, and the company now has more than 1,000 full-time equivalent staff. Globally, Facebook made profits of $3.7bn in 2015 on revenues of almost $18bn, which was 44% higher than the previous year.

Firms won’t have to list foreign workers THE British Government is adamant that companies will not be instructed to list or name foreign workers they employ, Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon telling the BBC: “This is not going to happen.” But he did say that firms could be asked “simply to report their numbers”.
That data could help identify skill gaps, or
‘Sex-offence’ teacher held in Barcelona A TEACHER accused of sex offences, who failed to appear at an Essex court to answer charges, has been held by police in Spain.
Cory Baptiste, 24, was apprehended in Barcelona on a European Arrest Warrant last Thursday, and police are now seeking to bring him back to the UK. He should have attended Basildon Crown Court in August, charged with five offences against children. The National Crime Agency said: “He appeared at a Spanish court and extradition proceedings are under way.” Mr Baptiste has been charged with five offences of abusing a position of trust: one for causing or inciting sexual activity with a boy aged 13-17; one of causing or inciting sexual activity with a girl aged 13-17; one of causing a child under 13 to watch a sexual act; and two of causing a child aged 13-17 to watch a sexual act.
be a factor in deciding whether to grant firms more visas for overseas workers, said a Government source. But Diane Abbott, Labour’s new shadow home secretary, accused the Tories of being in “disarray” over their policy. A row broke out after a briefing note was distributed, following Home Secretary Amber Rudd’s speech at the recent Conservative Party Conference. Although Ms Rudd did not mention businesses having to share how many foreign workers they employed, the note contained a proposal suggesting that firms should be “clear about the proportion of their workforce which is international”. Steve Hilton, an aide to former prime minister David Cameron, who criticised the proposal, described it as “foreign working shaming”. He addressed his thoughts to Ms Rudd in the Sunday Times, saying: “Hey Amber, for your next brainwave, why not announce that foreign workers will have numbers tattooed on their forearms? You might as well do the job of killing Britain’s reputation as an open, enterprise economy.”
Nicola Sturgeon, SNP leader, suggested it would mean companies being “named and shamed for the foreign workers they employ”. And Adam Marshall, acting Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “It would be a sad day if having a global workforce was seen as a badge of shame.” But Sir Michael told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Pienaar’s Politics: “What I can absolutely rule out is that we will not be asking companies to list or publish, or name or identify in any way, the number of foreign workers they have. “We’re going to consult with business, and the consultation document hasn’t even been published yet, on how we can do more to encourage companies - to give them incentives - to look first at the British labour market. And to offer these jobs to British people. “This is what the British people would expect, before they import labour more cheaply from abroad.” He said businesses al-
ready had to go through a “resident labour market test” for nonEU workers - that the Government wanted to examine “whether we can get a better picture of exactly what the dependence on foreign workers is in each particular sector”. He added: “That would mean, for example, asking companies just simply to report their numbers, which we wouldn’t publish we wouldn’t identify anybody.” Education Secretary Justine Greening also told ITV’s Peston on Sunday that the policy was “about collecting the right evidence if we are going to be able to respond to skills shortages. This is not data
that will be published; there will be absolutely no naming and shaming”. A government source also told the BBC that there had been a “misunderstanding” rather than a “Uturn” on companies employing foreign workers. A consultation was taking place, he said, “so we can listen to business and use that feedback to inform of our decisions”. But Labour’s Ms Abbott said the Government was “in disarray, contradicting each other as their policy falls apart at the seams”. She added: “The Tories’ anti-foreigner agenda is a distraction from their own complete failures of policy, and against the best interests of society. “We need answers on how they will protect our economy, but they have no plan, other than a risky, hard Brexit, which would threat our prosperity.” Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron was also critical, saying: “The Conservatives are reckless, divisive and uncaring. With Labour saying they did
not object to this disgusting plan in principle, the Liberal Democrats are now the real opposition to the Conservative Brexit government.” Business organisation CBI said it welcomed the “positive announcement” that firms would not be required to list their foreign employees. But it stressed: “The £45bn that business invests in training each year must complement education and skills development in schools, further education and higher education. “This will give us the foundation to develop an approach to migration that both supports the economy and deals with public concerns in the long run.” Following the criticism, Ms Rudd defended her proposals earlier in the week, telling the BBC that British businesses had a “responsibility to local employment, and we’re asking them to join us on this journey so they don’t automatically go abroad”. This, she said, was just one of several schemes under consideration and “not something we’re definitely going to do”.
Killer clowns no laughing matter POLICE forces in England have warned practical jokers that dressingup as “killer clowns” and performing stunts are “no laughing matter” and they are tying up resources. A spate of sightings around the UK, including one in County Durham in which a clown with a knife terrified four young children by jumping out on them, has prompted police to urge pranksters to “think seriously about these stupid acts”. Since last Friday evening, officers in Gloucestershire have received six reports of clowns acting suspiciously by following people or
wielding knives. A Police spokesman there said: “The reports have mostly involved clowns carrying knives. In one case, a child was followed. Clearly, this has scared people and caused real distress. “We have attended
these incidents as Grade 1 emergencies, which limits our ability to attend to other incidents. “Whether those involved are doing it for a joke or not, this is no laughing matter. These are stupid acts that are
really frightening people and wasting our time.” He added: “Please don’t be tempted to do it … think of the consequences.” Clown incidents have also been reported in Leeds, Edinburgh, Hampshire and Essex. The trend appears to have arrived from the US, where videos of clown pranks have circulated on social media. Last month, Georgia police received calls from anxious parents after pranksters dressed as clowns were seen talking to children. And a Facebook page was published by someone claiming he would dress up as a clown and
snatch children from local schools. The incidents prompted scary author Stephen King, who produced the horror novel It - featuring demonic clown Pennywise - to tweet that it was “time to cool the clown hysteria”, adding that clowns, typically, cheer-up children and make people laugh. But not every sighting has scared people. In Sheffield, people were amused to see a bald clown, with a white complexion and sprouts of red hair, shoot past them on a mobility scooter, while balancing his walking frame on the back of the vehicle.

A sober outlook for Saloufest revellers THE drunken behaviour of British students at the controversial but popular annual Saloufest annual festival has led to thousands being banned from going to Spain in 2017.
Organisers of the annual festival, I Love Tour, have confirmed the party will not be held next Easter, although other venues in Europe still plan on going ahead. The Brit ban comes after Salou Council claimed Saloufest was an unwelcome nuisance and was more about “drinking, fighting, vomiting and having sex” than enjoying an acceptable holiday. The company said in an official statement: “I Love Tour can confirm that after 16 incredible years, we will not be running Saloufest in 2017. “We apologise to those loyal customers who had set their hearts on experiencing the legend of Saloufest one more time in 2017. “Our phenomenal Croatia and Italy festivals are still operating as normal, though we urge customers to get their bookings in asap as space is running low.” The decision is a victory for opponents of the festival, who have lodged numerous complaints about drunken, and also for Salou Council, which claimed their behaviour was ruining the city’s reputation. On resident said: “There was constant singing in the streets, urinating, large amounts of alcohol were consumed, street furniture smashed and constant arguments, either between themselves or with other tourists.” The company estimates that it has brought around 100,000 people to Salou over the 16 years, and has contributed around five million euros in spending each time. It is understood that the pressure put on
organisers by both the regional government and the local council was too much to combat. And authorities also blocked efforts to move the festival from the Costa Dorado, in the Catalonia region, to Lloret del Mar, on the Costa Brava. The Catalan government also added to the pressure by warning any companies involved in so-called “binge” tourism that they would have their seals of excellence removed. British students say Salou had started to adopt a heavy-handed approach to party behaviour. This year, three Brits were arrested following a mass brawl at a nightclub, and 40 sanctions were handed out. Salou Council, which “has always blamed sun, sea and too much sangria”, now wants to attract family tourism. The decision is a victory for Saloufest opponents, who have lodged numerous complaints about drunken Brits ruining Salou’s reputation. In a more detailed statement, the company said: “Having
operated for 16 years without interruption, having brought more than 100,000 customers, and provided in the order of five million euros annually to the economy of Salou, and the region, during the low season, the various pressures, applied both by the Council of Salou and the Generalitat de Catalunya for the past two years, have made it virtually impossible to implement programmes for the youth segment of tourism in the region. “Apart from media pressure received in recent years, collaborating companies have received a disturbing number of administrative inspections, simply because of their collaboration with the event.” “And because of the pressures, some of our customers have suffered: university students from over 100 universities in the UK some of the best in Europe - have been treated on several occasions in an intimidating manner by police, and even fined when being harmless and within the law.”

Pound slump boosts UK’s tourism sector A RECORD number of foreign visitors came to Britain following the Brexit vote as the slump in the pound meant they were given more for their money.
There were 3.8 million visits from abroad in July, up 2% on the same 2015 month, despite the UK’s 23rd June vote to leave the European Union. Spending from those visits rose 4% to £2.5bn as the pound fell, making goods cheaper for foreign visitors enjoying a better exchange

which saw the number of visits in 2015 rise to a record 36.1m, with

You’ve frightened the life out of us! A LARGE group of zombie-like characters terrified and baffled passers-by in equal doses as they strolled through central London last week.
Terrifying legions of the unleashed “undead” were under strict orders to be on their best behaviour. They were warned not to spend too long crossing the road or walking in it, and to ensure they stuck to the pavements. Zombies m a y b e
renowned for devouring their victims’ brains and causing mayhem, but among the strict rules the bloodstained London brigade had to abide by was not freaking people out. In fact. the well-behaved mob, out in force for World Zombie Day, were collecting money for St Mungo’s Broadway, a homelessness charity. Although their garb might have drawn ins p i r a ti on from
horror films such as Dawn of the Dead, organisers of the charity event were keen for their monsters to stay out of trouble. Zombies were, quite sensibly, warned not to bring fake weapons, in order to avoid a standoff between the undead and the very-muchalive, armed police. Dozens of zombie-like people turned up to mark the fun-cum-morbid occasion, and to raise money for St Mungo’s Broadway. Wo r l d Zombie Day i s

A lengthy list of rules was sent out to wouldbe zombies before this fund-raiser. And an organiser said: “We’ve worked really hard to make sure this event is good zombie fun for everyone, and that it has a good reputation so it can keep on going, year after year.” The route took zombies through Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and Embankment, alongside other popular London landmarks. And they weren’t alone. More than 50 cities worldwide participate in World Zombie Day, including New York, Pittsburgh, Paris, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, and Tokyo. St. Mungo’s Broadway provides a bed and support nightly for more than 2,500 people, who are either homeless or at risk. It also works to prevent homelessness, helping about 25,000 people a year.
the figures as part of its 2015-2016 annual review, foreign tourists spend £700 a second in the UK. British Tourist Authority Chairman Christopher Rodrigues said: “Tourism is a shining star in an uncertain world. “As our fourth-biggest service export, and one of our fastest-growing sectors, tourism’s importance as a key economic driver and job creator is clear. “While the talk is of trade deals with new markets, tourism is already leading the way, competing strongly in our most valuable source markets such as the US, and in markets that are crucial for our future, including China.” The pound is hovering at its lowest point for 30 years, and its value against the euro is at a seven-year low, making Britain an attractive destination. In 2015, US visitors
spent £3bn in Britain for the first time, and European bookings were also up. With a marketing push in the US, as well as France and Germany - Britain’s three largest markets - with travel company Expedia, it is hoped that numbers will increase further. China has also become one of the top-10 most-valuable tourism markets for Britain, with a 46% increase and spending up 18% in 2015. This year is likely to see further growth, with bookings for October to December up nearly a quarter, as the pound dropped more than 10% since 23rd June. Brits also spent £19.6bn on overnight trips in 2015 - up 8% on 2014 and £97.2m more than the previous year. Inbound tourism is worth more than £26bn to the UK economy, while it is worth £127bn worldwide.
Under-age drivers need crash course THE number of under-age car drivers involved in crashes on Britain’s roads has reached the highest level in four years.
Ninety-one boys and girls, under 17, were behind the wheel during accidents last year, according to Press Association analysis of Department for Transport data. It represents a 30% spike compared with the previous year, and is the most since 103 were recorded in 2011. Separate analysis by the RAC Foundation, a motoring research charity, found that over half the under-age drivers involved in crashes last year (49) were injured, including one who was killed and 11 seriously hurt. The accidents also resulted in 48 casualties passenger and pedestrian - including two who were killed and eight seriously injured. Steve Gooding, RAC Foundation director, said: “Anyone who thinks of driving below
the legal age-limit as joy-riding should think again. “Not only are underage drivers a massive risk to themselves but last year, they also caused the death or injury of at least 48 other people. “That’s an unacceptable human toll for those directly involved, while the resulting, financial costs then fall on motorists, legally on the roads, through having to meet higher insurance premiums.” Edmund King, President of the AA, warned that those involved should be driving in computer games only, or at specialist off-road centres. “These children should be playing Gran Turismo or attending car clubs for under-17s, rather than crashing illegally on the real highway,” he said. “A proportion are likely to be involved in car crime, and others may have chanced taking their parents’ car for a spin. “Either way, they are breaking the law - and putting their own and other lives at risk.”

A FAMILY rift over Muhammad Ali’s £40m fortune has broken into a slugging match … and his stonybroke brother looks to be the biggest casualty.
Destitute Rahman Ali, who fears he may have the same degenerative Parkinson’s Disease which blighted Ali for decades, won’t get a cent, after years of feuding with his brother’s wife, Lonnie. And even as their bitter dispute rumbles on, there are also tensions between Lonnie and other members of the family. Muhammad Ali Jnr and his seven sisters are at loggerheads with brother Asaad, who was adopted by their dad and Lonnie in 1986. Lonnie, 59, was the star’s full-time nurse before becoming wife No.4. The unseemly row will horrify millions of Ali fans as his name is dragged through the mud - and quite possibly the courts if any relatives contest the will. For years, Lonnie was accused of being a golddigger who controlled

Ali’s fortune, which infuriated her. The three-times world heavyweight champion, known by all as The Greatest, died in June, aged 84. Muhammad Jnr, 44, said: “Rahman is really hurt because Lonnie didn’t invite him to the family part of the funeral. He was meant to be at the hospital, but she didn’t tell him about that. “He’s hurt worse than all of us, I pray for him. He wasn’t able to say goodbye. He wasn’t there when they pulled the plug. He’s not doing so good. “He was born with a chemical imbalance and can’t remember things. He would forget to go to work and got fired. This isn’t going to help his health. His life is really bad. “But he would benefit from the will the most. I’ll give him some …
I feel we all should. It could be the final nail in the coffin if we don’t help him.” Muhammad Jnr, who had previously slated Lonnie, too, says any rifts have been healed. Now he and his stepmother are working together to divide Ali’s estate.
He said: “In my father’s death, he did something he couldn’t do in his life and that is get us together. I wish he could see it. It’s funny how death brings people closer. “I wouldn’t normally speak to half my sisters, so it’s like a family reunion all over again. I
feel the love. We talk by phone, Facebook - it’s all come together.” But while Muhammad Jnr and Lonnie have found peace, things are not so sweet with his 30-year-old brother Asaad, who was adopted by Lonnie and Ali as a baby in 1986, and who has also been excluded from family meetings. Before his dad died, Muhammad Jnr was living in squalor in the Chicago suburb of Englewood, one of America’s most violent neighbourhoods. He’d earn £4-an-hour cleaning yards and relied on charity handouts to feed and clothe his wife, Shaakira, and their two children. Now, he has moved to a quiet middle-class area nearby and is living alone after a fall-out with Shaakira. But he fears more family anguish before the estate is settled. He
added: “With the will, it might kick up more trouble. Some people might be disappointed. “Usually, when it comes down to the will and property, there’s a lot of hell to go through … so it’s bound to happen.” A legal firm handling Ali’s affairs said it was Lonnie’s job to “administer the trust as it was written”. Lawyer Jeffrey K Eisen said: “Muhammad Ali’s trust, which governs the distribution of his estate, was finalised more than 10 years ago. It was carefully crafted to reflect his specific wishes and to protect his legacy. “It is Lonnie Ali’s job as trustee to carry out those wishes and administer the trust as it was written, which she is doing. “The details of the trust are, and should remain, a private matter.”

Chocolate brigade is on the rampage THE American owners of Terry’s Chocolate Orange have been accused of “ruining British chocolate” because the sweet snack has been shrunk in mass by 10% and is still the same price.
Exploding e-fags are a shock to smokers AN increase in the number of people being burned by cheap, suspected faulty e-cigarette imports, has led to a call for stronger regulations.
Burns surgeons, fire chiefs and tradingstandards officers are joining forces to highlight the dangers, following a series of serious incidents involving exploding vaporisers. Plastic surgeons at Morriston Hospital’s Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery in Swansea said they had treated five patients for burns after e-fag batteries exploded. Consultant plastic surgeon Dai Nguyen said:
“Before this year, we hadn’t seen any injuries like this. Now we have had five, which reflects the rising popularity of these e-cigarettes.” Three of the patients had the devices in their trouser pockets when they exploded. It sparked surgeons into notifying Trading Standards officers. They also wrote a paper highlighting the cases, calling for tougher import regulations on efags and more guidance for consumers. Michael Bennett received treatment in hospital for 10 days in February after a device exploded in his pocket while roller-skating with his son. He needed skin grafts and, apart from being angry, is still in discomfort. He told Sky News: “It
was a scary experience. What really gets me is that I could have been picking my son up off the floor when it blew up, and it would have blown into his face. It could have blinded him.” Mr Bennett insisted that he had purchased the electronic cigarette substitute from a wellknown trader, but it still proved faulty. Councillor Simon Blackburn, from the Local Government Association, says matters had worsened recently. “Mass production of these things in foreign factories seems to have picked up in the last six months, and huge amounts of these products are being sold on the internet,” he said. “Frankly, an awful lot of you would struggle
to trace them back to a reputable vendor.” The advice for consumers is to shop in reputable stores only, and on well-reviewed websites - and to look out for the “CE” mark on devices. John Dunne, of the UK Vaping Industry Association, said: “It is vitally important that consumers buy their vaping products from a reputable online retailer or high street store - and that they use the correct charging equipment for their specific device.” He added: “Public Health England has identified vaping as 95% safer than tobacco, and the UKVIA is working with regulators and Trading Standards to ensure quality and best practice across the industry.”
The popular treat appears to have been reduced from 175g to 157g in recent months, yet the majority of stores appear to be charging the same amount. Outraged Chocolate Orange eaters criticised the move by Mondelez, which took over Terry’s in 2012 and moved production to Poland. Some devotees even created a Facebook page, dubbed “Mondelez are shrinking our Terry’s Chocolate Oranges”, to vent their frustrations at the global food-and-drinks giant. One chocolate scoffer wrote: “Mondelez International owners of the Terry’s brand since 2012 have now decided to
shrink the 1932 chocolate orange from 175g down to 157g, a subtle and obvious trick that they hoped nobody would notice. Well, we noticed and we’re sick of them ruining British chocolate.” A woman on the page said she won’t buy the chocolate any more, while another simply labelled them “cheeky b*****s”. Cadbury, bought by Mondelez in 2010, has also been lambasted for reducing the number of Creme Eggs and Curly Wurlys in its multi-packs, while keeping the price the same. Elsewhere, popular treats such as Mars and Nestle’s Yorkie and Fruit Pastilles have seen recent reductions in mass. Terry’s Chocolate Orange became synonymous with Vicar of Dibley actress Dawn French after she starred in its advertising campaign during the Nineties. Mondelez, formerly Kraft Foods, says the shrinkage in some of its snacks is because of rising ingredient costs.
I.S. territory is slipping away SO-CALLED Islamic State (IS) has lost more than one-quarter of the territory it once controlled, says security and defence analysts IHS. It believes the group’s control has shrunk by 28% since its height, in January 2015. In the first nine months of this year, IS territory fell from 78,000sq/km to 65,500sq/km - an area equivalent to the size of Sri Lanka, says IHS analysts. However, IS losses have slowed in the three
months to October. In fact, IS has lost just 2,800sq/km since July, and, says IHS, the slowdown appears to coincide with Russia reducing the number of air strikes against IS targets. At the start of the year, some 26% targeted IS, but it had dropped to just 17% by the summer . Alex Kokcharov, principal Russia analyst at IHS, said: “Last September, President Putin said it was Russia’s mis-
sion to fight international terrorism and, specifically, the Islamic State. But our data suggests that is not the case. “Russia’s priority is to provide military support to the Assad Government and, most likely, transform the Syrian civil war from a multiparty conflict into a binary one between the Syrian government and jihadist groups like the Islamic State; thereby undermining the case for providing international support to the op-
position.” Yet the losses sustained by the group are still significant, say experts. IS has been pushed back 10km from the Turkish border, while Iraqi forces have secured Qayyarah Airbase, a key strategic facility, 60km south of the Mosul IS stronghold. It also lost the Syrian city of Manbij and its surrounding roads, which linked the Turkish border to the IS defacto capital Raqqa, to US-backed Kurdish and
Arab fighters in August. “The Islamic State’s territorial losses since July are relatively modest in scale, but unprecedented in their strategic significance,” said Columb Strack, senior analyst and head of the IHS Conflict Monitor. “The loss of direct road access to cross-border smuggling routes into Turkey severely restricts the group’s ability to recruit new fighters from abroad, while the Iraqi government is poised to launch its offensive on
Mosul.” Should the long-promised and much-delayed offensive against Mosul be successful - it is expected to begin later this month - it would be a huge blow the extremists. Mosul, Iraq’s second city, and under the control of the extremists since 2014, is described as the “last bastion” for IS in Iraq, with authorities in Baghdad saying it would spell the end for the group in their country.

Created by BAFTA winning writer, Paula Milne, HIM is a new three-part ‘domestic horror’ that focuses on a 17-year-old boy known only throughout the drama as ‘HIM’ who is caught in limbo between childhood and adulthood. Trapped in emotional flux between the two homes of his divorced parents, each now remarried with new families, ‘HIM’ is the cuckoo in both their nests, a reminder of the failure of their past and a threat to their newfound domestic bliss. Like any teenager, he is riding a rollercoaster of confusing emotions and finds it hard to process his feelings, but ‘HIM’ has the added complication of a primal struggle to contain the terrifying secret of a supernatural power he has inherited from his grandfather. With only his aging grandmother understanding his gift, ‘HIM’ must fight his anger and frustration to take control and use his powers for good before they end in tragedy. Starring newcomer Fionn Whitehead, Katherine Kelly, James Murray, Patrick Robinson, Lucy Liemann and Simona Brown, this striking and original drama focuses on life’s major themes: the painful breakdown of relationships, love, loss, betrayal and passion. At the heart of the story is HIM’s rite of passage from boyhood to manhood as he struggles not to lose his humanity and control his supernatural power. With the repercussions his parents’ divorce and their consequent remarriages knocking HIM’s (Fionn Whitehead) world out of balance, he finds himself struggling with adolescence, failing grades and feelings he cannot control. However, unlike other teenagers, HIM has the additional pressure of learning to master his inherited telekinetic powers. Living in between both his parents’ houses, HIM feels ousted by their respective new families, with his Dad (James Murray) expecting twins with his new wife and a baby brother to contend with at his Mum’s (Katherine Kelly) house. However, when his stepsister Faith (Simona Brown) moves in, the fragile balance is threatened further as he develops feelings towards her. With only his grandmother to confide in, who urges HIM to use his abilities for good rather than in anger, will HIM be able to keep his emotions – and powers – in check?

The iconic comedy series continues as evergreen pensioner pals, Jack and Victor, strike back at everything modern life has to throw at them. In this second episode, The Undrinkables, a funeral brings the community together, while bootleg alcohol has a sobering effect on Craiglang’s residents. Jack and Victor receive the sad news that dear old friend, Pete the Jakey, has died. Pete may have been homeless but he held a special place in the heart of Craiglang’s community. However, as everyone gathers at the Clansman after Pete’s funeral, tight-fisted Tam still can’t find it in himself to contribute to the kitty. Beyond the grave, Pete leaves his legacy with Boabby and Winston through his pal, Methadone Mick. Meanwhile, the latest budget means the prize of booze is up. The Clansman feels the pinch as punters stay away and some dubious bootleg hooch starts flooding the community, with serious side-effects. Jack and Victor take on the task of finding out who’s brewing the dodgy booze.

In the wake of the latest killing, suspicion shifts to garage owner and Le Saux associate, Duncan Elliot (Geoff Bell). Visiting Elliot, Nancy spots Theo Kettler’s missing car, and a tense chase ensues. When the driver escapes, Nancy and O’Dowd start to suspect Gunner of complicity. A vital piece of evidence is later recovered from the car, giving DCI Newman a breakthrough but placing Nancy in even greater danger. The pressure on Nancy becomes unbearable when new forensic evidence is revealed, turning her emotional world on its head and changing her sense of Frank forever. Meanwhile, tensions surface among the Le Sauxs with Hayley and her brother Tate (Cian Binchy) at the haulage yard. Exboyfriend Shay Nash calls, ostensibly looking for a cargo which has gone missing on a Le Saux truck, but it’s clear he’s still drawn to Hayley. Nancy warns her to stay clear.

Tutankhamun ITV1, 21.00
Tutankhamun is based on the compelling story of Howard Carter and his discovery of the tomb of one of Ancient Egypt’s forgotten pharaohs, the boy-king Tutankhamun. Lord Carnarvon is the dashing eccentric who keeps faith with Carter and continues to back his expeditions when no one else will. In 1905, archaeology in Egypt is a rich man’s game, the preserve of aristocrats and tycoons... except for the lone figure of Howard Carter. Carter is a genius and someone that even expert archaeologists turn to for advice. One of them is Maggie Lewis, a member of the New York Met Museum’s dig team. Maggie is fond of Carter and tries to get him to join her dig but Carter is determined to plough his own furrow. Maggie brings to Carter’s attention a faience cup and sets the archaeologist off on a trail of discoveries that points to something incredible. Carter becomes convinced that there is a royal tomb that’s forgotten by history and waiting to be discovered. He believes the tomb belongs to the boy king Tutankhamun, a little known Pharaoh whose legacy has been lost to the sands of time. Maggie dismisses Carter’s theories out of hand but he pursues it with single-minded determination. Only one man has enough faith in Carter’s brilliance to financially back him, Lord Carnarvon. He and Carter form the unlikeliest of partnerships: the dashing maverick aristocrat and the outcast genius, who had no formal training in archaeology. Together they join forces to unearth the greatest archaeological marvel the world has ever seen... Carnarvon’s teenage daughter Evelyn is swept away by the magic of the Valley of the Kings and she believes Carter’s theory of a lost tomb. An off-hand comment from Evelyn leads Carter to think that the tomb might be right under their noses, in the centre of the Valley of the Kings. But the outbreak of World War 1 means that Carter’s dream has to be put on hold – perhaps forever.

James Norton narrates us through the story of a land home to grizzly bears, extreme kayakers, tough ranchers and the world’s biggest trees. Through frigid winters and scorching summers, to survive they must battle all that the seasons throw at them. In the spirit of the old gold rush towns, today the animals, plants and people here must grasp what opportunities they have. In California’s Sierra Nevada, ranchers must seize the chance to get their cattle to the mountains by embarking a challenging 70 mile trek. Bristlecone pines, the oldest living organisms on earth, thrive on the mountain slopes but have a limited growing season and may have only increased by six inches in girth since Columbus discovered the continent over 600 years ago.

The Victorian Slum BBC2, 21.00
In the heart of the modern East End of London a Victorian slum has been recreated, and a group of 21st century people are moving in. Michael Mosley joins them to tell the extraordinary story of how the Victorian East End changed our attitude to poverty forever. In this episode the slum-dwellers move into the 1860s when London was the capital of the world’s first industrial superpower and the richest city on earth. Their new home is totally authentic: a foreboding Victorian tenement building made up of sparse rooms, a shared water pump and outdoor privies. There are businesses too - a small shop and a common lodging house known as the doss house. For some of the new residents it’s a chance to live as their East End ancestors once did, while others want to experience the history of their trades. As it would have been then, their priority is to earn enough money to put food on the table and pay the weekly rent. During the economic boom years of the 1860s life was tough for the poor, but at least London provided ways to make a living - as the slum dwellers find out. Whether that is piecework, farmed out by factories like matchboxmaking and wood-turning, or repurposing old clothes for the rag trade, they all replicate the work once done by poor Victorians. Graham Potter finds out first-hand the back breaking labour his forebears would have experienced and the effect on a Victorian family when the main breadwinner was out of action. But it’s Shazeda Haque who finds life toughest, as she experiences the vicious cycle of poverty and debt that lone Victorian parents endured.

At Mann Management, Vincent is fielding calls from Fearne Cotton - who sees television show ideas everywhere she looks. Meanwhile Danny Dyer is suffering from an unusual health complaint that he’s mysteriously picked up while spending time alone in his man-shed, and Natalie Cassidy is planning a big night out down at Jason’s Karaoke.

Adam (James Nesbitt) is beginning to have feelings for Tina (Leanne Best) and suspects that she may feel the same. Pete (John Thomson) and Jenny (Fay Ripley) finally agree a compromise with Harry’s daughter. Still concerned about Pete’s mental wellbeing, Jenny persuades him to attend a mindfulness class, but for a middle-aged mother of two emptying your mind isn’t easy. Pete, on the other hand, embraces it. When Karen (Hermione Norris) discovers that, thanks to his case and Robyn’s divorce proceedings, David’s (Robert Bathurst) finances have hit rock bottom, she notes that he could dip into the girls’ trust fund, little does she know that he has already done so. Karen has no choice but to send him packing and once again, David has no place to call home.

Ordinary Lies BBC1, 21.00 Based at the call centre and warehouse of sports sales company Coopers, the six-part drama introduces viewers to a fresh array of compelling characters, each with their own tangled web of torrid
secrets and lies. The first episode tells the story of head of sales, Joe. Popular with his colleagues, Joe is the life and soul of the office and always the first to tell a joke. However, his cheery demeanour is knocked when he is sent home early from work after an injury to find wife Belinda acting strangely. Suspecting that she is having an affair, Joe makes the desperate decision to install hidden cameras around his house to keep an eye on her and their two children. The more he watches his family, though, the more addicted he becomes to monitoring their lives. His secret surveillance soon exposes his family’s clandestine lives, including his wife’s suspicious behaviour and his teenage son’s private life. But is the truth really what he wants, or will he realise that ignorance was bliss? Meanwhile, Coopers’ new recruit Ash catches the eye of recently divorced Ally. Despite Ash showing initial interest, Ally can’t help but feel as though Ash is hiding something. Will Ash let her in, or continue to keep her at arm’s length?

W C choice Who’s Spending Britain’s Billions? BBC2, 20.00 As Britain continues to spend less on the public sector, do we really know where our taxes are being spent? Spending on schools, hospitals and foreign aid are well debated. In this one-off documentary Jacques Peretti looks beyond the wellknown budgets to the range of projects the public know less about, from the virtual receptionists at Brent Civic Centre to the night-vision goggles being used to spy on dog walkers in Staffordshire. Peretti uncovers what is happening behind closed doors in cashstrapped Britain and finds that local councils across the UK are signing contracts with management consultancy firms who can take a percentage of any savings they find. Peretti also reveals that hundreds of the millions of taxpayers’ pounds spent on these contracts are covered by confidential deals meaning very little detail is known about them. In this revealing insight Peretti asks if the public deserve to know more about how those charged with managing Britain’s billions are spending it.

Puppy Secrets: The First Six Months
14th October - 20th October 2016
W ed n e s day
ITV1, 20.00
Puppies are one of nature’s greatest wonders and in this brand new two-part series, Puppy Secrets, cameras will follow, in loving detail, four very special litters. From Britain’s smallest breed, to one of the most popular, and from working sheepdogs to five rescue pups - breed unknown - cameras will capture their journeys all the way from birth to approaching the end of puppyhood. Viewers will have a privileged look at the rarely seen magic of the early days, through to the moment they move to new homes, and see how puppies form the strongest bond of their lives: not with their mums or their siblings, but with humans. Breeders and carers share their insights, and vet Mark Evans reveals some puppy secrets. It’s an eight-week race against time where the pups must hit crucial milestones if they are to be ready to move on… and the clock starts ticking the moment they’re born. In Devon is the first of the litters: three Chihuahuas. At only a few hours old, like all pups, the two boys and one girl – Snuggles, Smiley and Cheeky - can’t yet see or hear properly, but they can smell and sense heat, guiding them to what they need most: mum’s early milk. It’s packed with energy and anti-bodies to protect the vulnerable new-borns from disease. Chihuahuas are officially the world’s smallest dogs, so puppies don’t come much tinier than this. Amazingly they only weigh around 100 grams, lighter than an apple. The Chihuahua puppies are being reared by hobby breeder Dan, who says: “When you first hold that little puppy, it’s just incredible…I think I’m quite hard faced about certain things, but it gets me welling up every single time and it’s such an amazing experience.” Over in the Cotswolds, and the second litter, which are not for sale. They are Labradors - Britain’s most popular breed - crossed with Golden Retrievers, and are a mighty four times heavier at birth than the tiny Chihuahuas. The two boys and four girls – Freddie, Barney, Evie, Lucy, Molly and Betty - have a special destiny ahead of them: as assistance dogs for the charity, Dogs for Good. If they make the grade, each of the six pups will be trained to transform lives. At a total cost of £12,000 for each fully trained dog, this little litter really is precious. For now, though, they have a lot of growing up to do. In Gloucestershire is the third litter, Border Collies, and at four days old they’re already well on their way to doubling their birth weight. These little ones, five girls and three boys, are also special: their mum is training to be a competitive sheepdog and their dad is the current English champion. So there’s a chance that one of these little ones could be a future medal winner.

No Place To Call Home BBC2, 21.00
Filmed over nine months, this film shows us a whole new generation desperately looking in vain for a place to call home. Fifty years ago the acclaimed Cathy Come Home shone a powerful light on the desperate housing problems gripping Britain. Now, in 2016, this country is once again at the mercy of a housing meltdown. A lack of affordable homes, sky-high rents, 70 percent of council housing stock sold, a rise in homelessness. The housing officers in the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham face daily queues of angry residents desperate for help: most are facing eviction. As one beleaguered housing officer says: “We are a housing options service without any options... I didn’t get into housing to make people homeless.”

Anne Robinson’s Britain
14th October - 20th October 2016
T h ur s day
BBC1, 20:00
Anne Robinson presents a series delving into different areas of contemporary British life. Anne looks good for a woman of 72, but she works hard at it. But aren’t younger generations under even more pressure to look good than ever before? She meets make-up addicts who spend more time getting ready for a night out than on the nightitself, gym obsessives in pursuit of Instagram followers, and a young man going under the knife in the hope that he will be ‘perfect’ one day. Anne wants to know why we’re all so obsessed with our appearance and what’s wrong with being ugly anyway? As a counterpoint to those who are obsessed with their looks she meets some people who very definitely aren’t - from naturists who let it all hang out, to the comedian speaking out against body shaming, to actress Miriam Margolyes who tries to coax Anne to eat more than a lettuce leaf over lunch.

Mary Berry’s Foolproof Cooking BBC2, 19:00 Mary Berry draws on her wealth of cookery know-how to share a selection of her foolproof recipes. In the final episode of the series, Mary showcases her dishes that are perfect for a party. Sometimes cooking for a crowd can be very daunting, but Mary loves sharing her ideas that are fun, different and don’t take forever to prepare. First up is a Thai chicken curry, perfect for a party and all people need is a fork and a bowl. Mary loves a classic dish, and what better way to showcase this than with her ham hock terrine. A visit to the Isle of Wight sees Mary taste some different varieties of tomato, before she returns to the kitchen to whip up a tomato salad with whipped goat’s cheese. Finally for something a bit different for a party, a salmon and herb coulibiac, and for something more traditional, a show-stopping summer party gateau.
Tonight ITV1, 19:30 Ranvir Singh examines how the rules on taking children out of school for holidays during term time have been plunged into chaos. Since 2013, the government has been cracking down on parents who removed their children from classes in term time for family holidays, issuing fixed penalty notices that were handed to over 200,000 families that totalled more than 12 million pounds in fines. However after one parent took his case to the High Court and won, the system has been in disarray. A conspiracy thriller, Paranoid, tells the story of a female GP who is murdered in a rural children’s playground with an abundance of eyewitnesses. A group of detectives embark on what seems to be a straightforward murder investigation, but as they delve deeper into the case they are quickly drawn into the twists and turns of an everdarkening mystery, which takes them unexpectedly across Europe. The drama is written by acclaimed writer and producer Bill Gallagher whose previous credits include The Paradise, Conviction, Love Life and Lark Rise to Candleford. With the Ghost Detective’s (Kevin Doyle) identity revealed, Alec (Dino Fetscher) and Nina (Indira Varma) find themselves trading favours for information, which soon has deadly repercussions… Meanwhile, Bobby (Robert Glenister) and LINDA (Christiane Paul) come up against a cunning adversary in Dusseldorf. And a surprise ambush in a hospital leads to a breakthrough in the case but lives hang in the balance.

Twelve -year- old Tulsi is airlifted to St George’s after falling from a cliff near her home in Hastings, 70 miles away. They reveal that she has a subdural haematoma: a clot of blood in her head, which is expanding, putting pressure on her brain. Tulsi needs emergency brain surgery. Bus driver Adam, who’s 39, is rushed to A&E after his motorbike collided with a car in south-west London when he was on his way home from work.

THE end of the 2016 Adeje Patron Fiestas will be marked by traditional activities, as usual, with the 32nd Adeje Folklore Festival kicking off proceedings tomorrow night (Saturday) at 9m.
It will be organised by the Municipal Folklore School, and this year’s running theme is the link between popular music and traditional, also featuring the relationship between the
music of the Canarias and America. Also taking part in the Folklore Festival are Ignoce de Araya, Chajoigo de Barranco Hondo and Achamán. And at the end of the folklore performances, the Sabrosa orchestra will end the night with a street party in the Plaza.
On Sunday, the traditional Romería will put the finishing touches to the Fiestas. Activities begin at 10am with the Farm Fair, in the small plaza, just behind the Hacienda offices and the main post office. At 11am, Holy Mass will be sung by Adeje Municipal Folklore
Group, followed by the offering of farm products to the church patrons. The Romería procession itself will begin at 1pm, leaving from Adeje Health Centre and moving up Calle Grande to Santa Úrsula Church. Thirteen carts will carry gifts to the Virgin of the Incarnation, Santa Úrsula and San Sebastián, the borough’s patrons. Those taking part in the Romería should come along in traditional Canarian dress. And you are all reminded to respect the local police security orders.
K9 refuge news
Thieves spark fund-raiser OF interest to Tenerife residents and visitors this past week have been the stories of Mount Teide ready to erupt, and the K9 kennels’ break-in at San Miguel. The volcanic-activity story was pure hype, but, sadly, the K9 news was very real. The care and security of our dogs and cats is taken really seriously. But when thieves are determined to steal in an isolated area, no amount of protection can stop them. Had the thieves managed to achieve what they set out to do, the results would have been unimaginable for the poor animals. Supporters, volunteers and well-wishers have rallied round, and the kennels have been made much more secure, thanks to a lot of hard work by a number
of wonderful people. Round-the-clock vigilance has become the norm, by volunteers on site, and a greater presence of the local police. Monies that would, routinely, have gone to the animals’ care, have had to be diverted to this security increase. Now, though, a fundraiser will be held on Friday, 5th November, at the Brewers Droop on The Patch, in Las Americas. Jackie Peters has arranged for many entertainers to appear throughout the afternoon, from 1pm. We are hoping to raise at least 1,000 euros towards the huge security expense incurred so far. Please come along and lend your support. Festive dinner Our Annual K9 Festive Dinner is booked for Saturday, 10th De-
cember, at Restaurant Cueva El Campesino, in Aldea Blanca. Tickets are 20 euros and include most drinks, but numbers are limited to 150 guests. The cabaret is by Storm Duo and Aidy Evans, so yet another fantastic night is guaranteed. Tickets are on sale from the kennels, Studio 5 hair salon in Los Cristianos, the K9 shop in Alcala, and from k9mikey@gmail.com. Shop donations We are in constant need of donations for our Alcala shop, which has become the life support of the refuge. Goods can be taken directly to the shop and smaller amounts left at the kennels. If collection is required, please contact Muriel on 646 561 035 to arrange a convenient time.
Collection boxes Many bars or businesses will have a full K9 collection box. Several boxes have the contact phone number of Pat the Cat, but she has returned to live in the UK. Please contact the kennels - or Mikey - if you need a full box collected. Daily opening The kennels are open EVERY morning. If you can spare an hour or two to walk some of the four-legged guys, they will love it - and so will you. Thanks a million The committee of Refugio de los Animales K9 are really grateful to all those who have supported us at this difficult period in our 23-year history. And we look forward to your continued support of our vulnerable inmates.

Accion del Sol news
Jean’s big 90 TODAY (Friday) is a very special day for Jean Warren because she celebrates her 90th birthday and is our oldest supporter.
The Accion staff would like to say a very special thank-you to her for all her support over the years, and we wish her the happiest of birthdays. She loves the dogs, and her life is very much enhanced by the love
she receives and gives to them. Animals have such a loving and calming effect on the elderly, in addition to children and people in poor health, as well as their therapeutic attributes. And we always welcome people to the refuge who benefit from being with our dogs. Your help needed Please contact us if you can assist in other ways. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads.
You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the north-bound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. Email the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier. org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del SOL
Maps and opening times are on our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife.com/ourvets Males should be castrated from four months and girls from five months, and it’s very important for your cat’s health that they are neutered, even if they are house cats. Ring or WhatsApp Maria on 646 629 129 (7 days a week, 9am-6pm) for your unique promotion code, prior to making an appointment. Big-time thanks A big, big thank-you to all those who visited our charity tables last Saturday at pet stores Koala Sur in Adeje and Las Chafiras. Special thanks go to the two stores for allowing us to set up shops, and to our hardworking volunteers Cristina Cortes, Oksana Sereda, Tatiana, Patricia Carballo and Nieves Martin. Also, a big thanks to Julia Foster, Tatjana Födisch and Carlos Díaz for their help with the handicrafts. We raised 263 euros and were given lots of tin food and biscuits. We will be holding these sales every second Saturday of the month
at Koala Sur, so see you there in November. Adoptions We are contacted almost daily about kittens found by members of the public, and we try to home as many as possible. Currently, we have lots of adorable fluffy kittens needing loving permanent homes … all different colours, ages, sexes. Some are available for viewing in the Don Perro pet shop at Las Chafiras and Vet Express behind Gran Sur. Opening times and maps are on our website (see link above). If you are looking for a specific colour or sex of kitten, contact Maria to discuss exactly what you are looking for. Be smart, be there! On Sunday, from 2-8pm at The Palms Bar, Golf del Sur, we will be holding a fabulous
Designer sale … dresses, tops, suits, shoes, etc, for women, men, children and babies. In other words, something for everyone. Gucci, Coast, Monsoon, Yves, Saint Laurent, Burberry and Hugo Boss are just some of the big names we have, and we have had lots of interest, so make a date. Vital donations Can you donate anything to help us raise funds? Items can be dropped into our San Blas shop, on Golf del Sur (behind HiperDino). It is open seven days a week (10am6pm) - Saturdays from 11am-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have bulky items such as furniture and household effects for collection, please ring Mark on 636 590 557.

Hard Rock Cafe, Las Americas
Hard Rock on a roll! IF you’re expecting hamburgers and American burger-style food only at the Hard Rock Cafe, in the heart of Las Americas, you are in for a fantastic surprise.
We ordered our drinks and made a start by browsing the huge menu. We were offered the cocktail menu. But, as we were both driving, we stuck to water and Diet Coke … and we noticed that non-alco-
holic cocktails were also available. It’s not just burgers, either, because they have the top range of burgers, beef or vegetarian, pulled pork and chicken and steak and fish as well. Check out any special Hard Rock deals on its Facebook page, which also includes details of Happy Hour and other offers. Our excellent waiter spoke perfect English, and there is never a language-barrier problem here because the staff will always explain the menu if necessary.

The Swedish Corner is situated in the heart of Los Cristianos and only a stone’s throw from the beach. They have a 3-course special between 125pm for only 10 euros. Serving modern classics with a Swedish twist including meatballs, Gravalax, possibly the best homemade burgers in Tenerife and new to the menu; hake and salmon fish stew, with horse radish alioli, not forgetting the extensive wine list to accompany it all. We chose some picks to start with, including the exquisite spinachartichoke dip, served with parmesan flat bread, which had a strong, cheesy flavour, and Tupelo chicken tenders - crispy chicken strips served with honey mustard and hickory BBQ sauce. For our main course, we decided on the Norwegian Salmon with fresh vegetables - you can taste the cedar and the tangy BBQ sauce with buttery mash potatoes. We also had fajitas select from beef and chicken, even shrimp or a combination of them all - accompanied by Pico de Gallo, Monterey jack cheddar, guacamole sour cream and warm tortilla wraps, with stacks of salad. And they are all so delicious! It was time for a breather, and we chatted with Isabel, the sales and marketing manager with whom we have lots of contact because the Hard Rock Cafe advertises in Canarian Weekly with great success. That’s partly because it features a voucher containing a five-euro discount per person off the final bill. But you must produce the voucher. After our chat, we opted for a little ice-cream to help the digestion. Well, that’s our excuse! And we simply couldn’t resist a cocktail of raspberry, mint and lemon. Appropriately, October is National Vegetarian Month, and Hard Rock Cafe is staging its own veggie month. It has expanded its
menu to include fresh, vegetarian-friendly dishes and plant-based beverages, including Cauliflower “Wings” served Buffalo-style, a Grilled Ratatouille Wrap featuring grilled vegetables and Sriracha
mayo, and a Very Veggie ‘Tini featuring a mix of fresh vegetable juice, Greek Yogurt and Tito’s Handmade Vodka. The Hard Rock Safe is well worth a visit because the food is exceptional, and way above
the expectations of an American burger place! On your way out, visit the memorabilia shop, with T-shirts and lots of other goodies available. The Cafe is situated by the fountains in the same street as the 5-star Mediterranean Palace hotel, in the Mare Nostrum resort, opposite the Safari Shopping Centre.

Car-seat dangers
Painting by numbers
By Carl Pattison
By Val Sainsbury
HAIR colouring is a science, based on an international colour system of numbers, from one to 12 - one being the darkest and 12 being the lightest, and all that also goes in between. As well as that, we use a punctuation after the main number to show the tone. This tells us what is in the shade, and how it will affect and colour your hair. It entails more than grabbing at a colour and hoping for the best. This is why Hair Science was taught in colleges (no longer). This showed us how to prescribe colour, and what it was doing inside the hair as we used our tubes of colour. The molecules within a colour can stay inside your hair for years,
THE days when babies were put into carry-cots, on the back seats of our cars are, thankfully, long gone. But researchers have discovered that even modern baby car seats, which are often positioned next to the driver, can be dangerous for tots if they spend long periods sleeping in them. Newborns can slump forward in the seats, blocking their airways, which, in rare circumstances, can kill them. Researchers used a laboratory simulator to replicate the effects of a baby sleeping in a car seat during a 30mph car journey. After half an hour, the amounts of oxygen in the blood of babies under two months were found to have dropped “significantly”, while their heart-rates increased. Despite this, researchers insist that babies should travel in a properly-secured child seat during car journeys, as is required by law. But they advise that an adult should sit next to the baby, to make sure the infant is breathing properly. The scientists, led by Dr Peter Fleming, of Bristol University, warn: “There have been reports of deaths of infants who have been left in a sitting position - including in car seats - both on journeys, and when parents have used them as an alternative to a pushchair or cot for the infant to sleep in. “Our findings suggest
which is why it’s so important to think about what you use before you start. This is because once a colour molecule is in your hair, it will have an effect on every shade you put over it. I see colour and I can work out what’s inside it. Most stylists can, which is why we diagnose the hair before any colour is applied. Not doing so is the reason for bad results, such as washed-out tones, or underdeveloped lifting. Colouring your hair is always best left to the
BAG IT UP! TEN years ago, a man didn’t need one. He stuffed everything in his pockets, or carried it in his hand.
But today, man-bags have become big sell-
ers, and designers make large profits out of all that junk men now need to carry. From your mobile, laptop, keys - and even food - a guy needs some sort of stylish way to cart around his “stuff”. From backpacks to
professionals. Home colours are NOT prescribed for your hair, as each and every colour mixed in a salon is created, personally, for you. Your stylist will give you the best advice, and even take a strand of your hair to test before colouring, to show you the results and minimise incorrect results. We, at Robot, never commit to colouring unless the results are going to be good ones. There’s more to being a colourist than picking a random shade from a colour book. postman style, duffle to under-arm, bags for guys have never been so necessary - or so stylish. Think about where you will use it, and what you need to carry around, before buying one. It doesn’t even have to be designer, or even leather, to look cool, slung over your shoulder or on your back. Man-bags are here to stay, and most guys can’t get about without using one. Try not to buy an oversized one, as it can look like an overnight bag. Instead, look for compact, user-friendly - lots of pockets and plenty of space for all your essentials - and you’re good to go.
this kind of thing [death] could happen, although it would be a very rare event.” Babies do not have the muscle tone to support their heads, and sleeping in a car seat may push their heads forward. Car seats are designed for children up to 22lbs, but these may be too big to secure low birthweight or pre-term babies, discharged at weights of 4-5.5lbs. Most UK hospitals require premature babies to complete a “car-seat challenge” before they are discharged. Infants are observed for breathing difficulties, or changes in heart-rate, while in a car seat. But the test does not take into account the more-upright position in a car, or the vibration of the seat when the car is moving. To measure the effects of sleeping in a car seat, researchers studied 19 healthy infants, and 21 pre-term infants, with an average age of 13 days and a weight of 5.5lbs. They tested the heartand-lung functions of the babies for a 30-minute, simulated journey - in a car seat - at an upright, 40-degree position, de-
signed to vibrate as it would in a car. The experiment was stopped, immediately, if any of the children suffered “apnoea”, which meant that they were struggling to breathe during sleep - for more than 15 seconds, or if their blood oxygen levels dropped below 85% for 20 seconds. Trained personnel with resuscitation equipment were also on hand during the tests. The authors noted that 30 minutes was a “relatively-short journey time”. But despite this, some of the babies had “significant” drops in oxygen levels. Some who showed these significant drops flopped forward in an extremely-flexed position during motion, raising their heads, intermittently. But they could not maintain a raisedhead position. “The head and shoulders came forward despite the shoulder straps, which may be too long for smaller infants, allowing some forward movement,” said Dr Fleming. He warned that car seats were still vastly safer than babies being carried in an adult’s arms, adding: “If you brake suddenly, the baby could be killed. “No human is strong enough to hold on to a baby in a crash. The law says that they must be in a car seat - for a very good reason.” The study was funded by the Lullaby Trust charity, which aims to prevent sudden-infant deaths. It was carried out at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, in Swindon, with support from Southampton and Bristol universities.

JAMES Corden, the cockney Smithy character from TV sitcom Gavin and Stacey, really has rocketed to Hollywood heights of fame after hosting the Late Late Show. And his Stateside success really is paying off big-time because he is moving into his dream Californian home - for a staggering £64,000 a month! The 38-year-old star is renting a luxury, fivestorey, beach-front home in Los Angeles with his family. He moved to Los Angeles with his wife Julia last year, along with their four-year-old son Max and daughter Carey, who turns two at the end of this month. The plush pad boasts six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, giving the chat-shot host plenty of space for visiting family and guests. The sprawling mansion also houses its own infinity pool, private gym, outdoor fireplace and a deck with views over the ocean - perhaps so James can remind himself of how far his career has progressed since his Fat Friends days. In final, flashy, finish-

ing touches, the property also comes with its own lift and a fullyequipped professional kitchen, complete with its own chef. His new abode is light years away from his childhood, semi-detached home in Hazlemere, High Wycombe, Bucks, and certainly a cut above the five-bed-
room villa he had previously rented in Brentwood, LA, for £18,000 a month. His new neighbours at the Malibu property include director Steven Spielberg, Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow, which proves the comic has truly made it to the bigtime.
It had been up for sale for $24million, but is believed to have been taken off the market so the Tony Award winner could rent it out with his family. As if the flash home were not proof enough of his new Hollywood lifestyle, James himself was later seen pulling up to the property with some food shopping in a
sleek, black Range Rover. Corden, who now owns a selection of souped-up vehicles, was spotted a few days earlier taking his convertible Jaguar for a cruise around LA. The One Man Two Guvnors star took over as host of American TV’s Late Late Show from Craig Ferguson last March. And he has found huge success in the role, mixing with Hollywood celebs such as Rob Lowe and JK Simmons. Most notably, his regular Carpool Karaoke segment on the show
has become a viral hit, featuring such guests as George Clooney, Adele, Julia Roberts, Britney Spears and even the President’s wife, Michelle Obama. When asked if he had anticipated the viral success of Carpool, the star told Deadline magazine: “I don’t know if I would ever say we were that savvy. We understood that for our show to reach the biggest audience it could, we had to embrace the Internet. “The trick is just to make something good; if you make something good for your show, people will share it the next day.” The show, which also secured four Emmy nominations since it first aired 18 months ago, went on to win awards last month for Outstanding Interactive Programme and Outstanding Variety Special.

Lee’s champion point
AS if we needed yet another reminder about how strong the standard of pool is in the Direct Telecom Pool League, you had only to look at Tuesday night’s results in Division One. I don’t believe there has ever been a closer night! Gaffers A, current league leaders and defending champions, were pegged back by a determined Palms A side, who bounced back from the previous week’s mauling. Gaffers, who started in determined style, winning the opening frames, must have thought it would be a comfortable night. However, Palms had other ideas. First Roscoe then Chris and Simon found their form to give Palms a 3-2 lead. Neil levelled only for Palms to find another gear. At 5-3, the shock was on. Bangkok Kev was made to work hard by JT before taking frame 9, then Neil’s superb clearance breaking levelled the scores. It was a night to forget for Totally Shot Dave, who lost his third straight frame to give Palms A a vital 6-5 lead. The final frame was another cracker. Both Chris and Lee gave it their all, and maybe the Big Man upstairs was watching as Lee sneaked home. But the draw was a fair result. Dreamers A benefited from other results as they pulled off a decent win at Treehouse A. The home side struck first but then, uncharacteristically, lost five frames in a row against buoyant Dreamers. Jay and Paul rallied for Treehouse A but that was as good as it got because Steve and Tommy took the next two frames and the points, moving Dreamers A level on points with Tenerife Hammers A and Palms A in second spot. Hammers A could have
stayed clear in second spot, but they suffered a defeat in what was a somewhat bad-tempered affair down in Puerto Colon against Rewind A. The home side, who haven’t had the greatest of seasons, managed to hold their own in the first session, which finished 2-2. They then found a little bit of form and, surprisingly, took four frames on the bounce from a bruised and battered Hammers team in the next session. Wez needed the next frame to keep the Hammers in the match, but it wasn’t to be as Micky slotted home the black to grab the win. Phoenix Potters, who could also have taken advantage of the draws being played out in front of them, felt confident with a home game against basement boys Bluebell A. The Potters started well, taking the first two, only for Al and Mucker to strike back and level. The next four games went to and fro, and neither side could get a foothold, the score still level at 4-4. Al and Ian took their frames, with one from Geoff in between, and Mucker had a chance to clinch the match for Bluebell A. But Eric stood in his way … he has found himself in this position before! Eric played a cagey game, and, when his chance came, he took it to earn Potters a draw. Down on Amarilla Golf, a cockfight was taking place between Terrace Roosters and Terrace Bantams, with league position and bragging rights at stake. It was the Roosters who showed the sharpest beaks as they raced into a 3-1 lead. But the Bantams, who have added quality to their side recently, rallied to take the late frames and the match. Gaffers B, hoping to get their season back on track after a poor start,

welcomed Rewind Rewired to the “apparent” home of pool! Both teams were playing good pool and there was nothing to separate them as they shared the first eight frames. But the home team started the final session well, with Graham and Nath striking first, and the win looked on! Rewind Rewired are a good, solid side, though, and they know how to dig deep. And that’s exactly what Tony and Gary did, winning the final two games to tie the match for a well-earned point.
In a mid-table clash, Palms Elite had a home tie against Exiles A, and it proved to be yet another tight game with some quality pool on display. Exiles, famously, don’t travel well, but they were better on Tuesday. They were 3-1 up and even got it to 6-2. If you have read through this far, though, it won’t surprise you to know that again, the teams couldn’t be separated at the death. And, in what is being described as “unusual” gambling patterns, the game also ended in a

draw. We have a new Division Two leader, James Hammers C, but they had to dig themselves out of a hole to get there. They had a tricky away trip to Splash Bar and soon found themselves on the back foot as they went 3-1 down. But that quickly became 7-5. Picasso’s A had been top for so long, but they were down in Valle San Lorenzo, playing against a strong Crown side. This was another one of those matches featuring some excellent pool and close frames. Neither side wanted to concede anything, and there only ever looked like one outcome. And so it came to pass as the teams shared the points. Yates Bar have drawn level on points with Picasso’s A, and their fine form carried them to a hard-fought win over Treehouse B. The home side raced into a 3-1 lead and their tails were up. But the visitors dug deep and pulled it back to 3-3 with two early frames, only for Biggie and Chris to restore Yates Bar’s two-frame cushion. Ben struck back
again for Treehouse B, but Lee, Biggie and Terry were in fine form, closing out the match with the final three frames. Bluebell B are keeping themselves in the promotion chase, just squeezing past Palms Rebels. Despite the Scotland result, the home team kept their cool and took the first couple of sessions to lead 6-2. Then they wobbled as Palms Rebels hit back with frames from Mark, Mick and Dave. It was then Grant against Ian, who was chasing what looked like an unlikely point earlier in the night for the visitors. Unfortunately, he couldn’t keep his teammates’ momentum going and Grant just about dragged Bluebell B over the finish line for the win. Exiles B, hosting Hoppy’s A, knew a win would move them above their opponents in the table. There was nothing between them to start with and it was soon 2-2. But the home side found an extra gear and stunned their opponents by taking six in a row to end the game as a contest.

Boothen sack the Gaffers! THE previous week's Finals Night distractions might have caused some rustiness in the arm during our return to league action last Friday, or maybe Gaffers overdid it with the lubrication!
Either way, their 6-2 home defeat by Boothen came as a bit of a surprise, although they have gone up a place to third, 10 points adrift of the leaders. Or, should I say, new leaders because Pas O Nadas A knocked Scruffy Macs off the top with a 6-2 victory over Sandys Reborn
during a match which included two more maximums from Daddy Cool, aka Richard, and a 108 finish by Gualty. Sandys' Mick replied with his first 180 of the season. The Pub had to take the trebles leg to squeak a win over Sandys International, while Jamie notched another 180 for Exiles in their 5-3 derby success against the Playboys. Third played second in the Division 2 match of the day, and no surprise that the tie ended all-square after Picassos took the trebles leg. This could have allowed The Tavern to open up more of a lead, but for the fact that they drew at

Wheelchair basketball hits big-time on Island PEOPLE watching wheelchair basketball for the first time in the recent Paralympics were struck by the intensity and aggression of the competitors.
Now, Tenerife has been chosen to stage the 2017 European Championships, for men and women, which should prove a real thriller. From 19th June to 1st
July, the top nations will clash, watched by TV audiences around the continent. The venues haven’t yet been announced, but Tenerife is well blessed with them because basketball is a boom sport at all levels here. The Pabellon Santiago Martin, in La Laguna, would be a popular choice for the major clashes because it has a 5,000-strong spectator capacity. The last finals were held in England, at Worcester University,
last year, with Britain winning the men’s competition for the third consecutive time. The Brits saw off Turkey 87-66 in the final, with Germany third after beating Holland. Germany and Holland have dominated the ladies competition since the European Championships began in 1974, and, between them, have won all the titles. In Worcester two years ago, Germany won a close final, beating Holland 72-62.

Choco melting under pressure By Colin Kirby
CHOCO Lozano, excused from international duty with Honduras, had a wonderful opportunity to win the match for Tenerife, but he blasted a penalty off the crossbar and out of play.
It just about summed up the team’s recent failure to hit the target, and the game ended up
Reus 0 CD Tenerife 0
as the third 0-0 in the last four outings. The starting line-up looked capable of putting a few past Reus, the newly-promoted surprise package. Amath overcame an injury doubt, and Aaron tucked in just behind Choco. Tenerife had the best of the play but couldn’t produce the killer pass to produce that elusive goal. Penalty apart, Suso had the best
chance, pulling the Reus defence out to the right. But his shot whizzed by the far post. The penalty was an easy call after Aaron had been bundled over, but the conversion never materialised. Aitor Sanz, who picked up his fifth booking of the season to earn a one-match suspension, was first to be subbed, after 68 minutes. This allowed Marc Crosas to bring
his more robust style to the midfield. The big hope was the return of young striker Cristo Gonzalez, dropped after public rumblings of discontent, who had just signed a new four-year contract. But coach Pep Marti leaves his changes too late, and Cristo was given just a 15-minute run-out, Position
ute lead, via Drazic. Tenerife hit back four minutes later through Amath to earn the extra 30 minutes, but Camille gifted a lead to De Tomas, and Drazic wrapped it up in the final minute. Tenerife, with striker Jouini (below) returning from suspension, are home on Sunday against Cadiz, kick-off 7pm.
making little impact. Back-up keeper Falcon saved the point with a last-minute block, and an away point should be cause for contentment. But there was no such joy on Wednesday as Tenerife splashed out of the Copa del Rey (Kings Cup) 3-1 in extra time at rain-lashed Valladolid. Poor defending gave Valladolid a 79th-minPoints

Basketball
All White on both nights WHAT a dream start to the basketball season for Iberostar Tenerife as they top Spain’s elite Liga Endesa with three thumping wins.
American Davin White has emerged as their big weapon, but everyone is getting in on the winning act … and the fans are packing their La Laguna home. Two home games in
three days didn’t blunt their edge, starting with a 70-55 win over Obradoiro despite being behind at the halfway point. Phoenix-born guard White top-scored with 18 points, but he was closely shadowed by Javi Beiran on 17 points. But the 3,742 crowd were thrilled by another fine squad effort. A cagey opening quarter was taken by the visitors 9-10 and ythey stretched it with a 16-18 second quarter. Tenerife, playing a
waiting game, clawed their way back with a 24-17 third period
that broke Obradoiro. And the final 21-10 quarter saw Tenerife
at their ruthless best. Sunday’s victims were Real Betis, who were sent packing after a 96-74 lesson. That man Davin was on fire again - 28 points this time - and Rodrigo San Miguel was no slouch, weighing in with 15. The first quarter was again the weak link, Tenerife losing 22-24 before powering away. And if they start to hit the ground running, they will take some stopping. It all looks good for the squad, with their
first European Champions League group game coming on Tuesday at Cibona de Zagreb, in Croatia. The eight-team group will be played over midweek games, which will add extra strain on the squad with trips to Serbia, Lithuania, and Montenegro as the furthest outposts. But after a 30-year absence from European competition, you won’t find anyone at the club complaining about the extra games.

Marino mighty grateful CD Marino 1 Villa Santa Brigida 1
Ladies Football
Home and away pride Egatesa Granadilla 2 Espanyol 1 EGATESA’S first win of the season, against Espanyol at El Medano, cheered on by 600 relieved supporters, was the result of a solid team effort.
MARINO, dominant and inventive in the first half, had to settle for a 1-1 home draw with last season’s champions.
The Gran Canaria visitors hit their stride in the second half and exploited the departure of forwards Adan and Kevin Castro. But there’s a lot to admire in this Marino side, and some of their interplay was a joy to watch, especially the overlaps of Josito and Bradley Mills down the right, Adan leading the forward line like an oldschool centre-forward with Kevin feeding off him just behind, and the crisp tackling of midfielder Coly. Santa Brigida started poorly and made basic errors, like a loose back-
pass across the face of their goal. Marino piled the pressure on, and it took two defenders to stop Adan scoring early on. Captain Ubeda, a rock in defence, showed the other side of his game with a powerful run, his lay-off just eluding Josito. Kevin finished skilfully after 10 minutes, teeing his shot up before beating the visiting keeper. The scorer linked up well again with Adan a couple of minutes later and nearly doubled the advantage. But Santa Brigida started to gain their composure, and Perez put a good chance wide as they brought big midfielder Marrero more into play. Adan headed a goalbound effort off the line, and Facu snatched a long shot over the top corner of the home goal. Then Fran Delgado
unlocked the Santa Brigida defence down the left, but his shot flew outside the post. Perez could have opened the second half with a leveller, but Marino keeper Cicovic was equal to his shot. Adan, injured earlier, went off, with Ammed taking over his central role. Kevin Castro was replaced soon after and the home attack lost its punch. Lolo Armario blasted a wild shot off-target, and Santa Brigida switched play to the other end, exposing Marino on their left to allow Facu, ghosted in, to plant a square cross into the net. The visitors pressed for the winner and Juanma, fresh on to the pitch, wasted an easy chance by skying his shot. With time running out, Santi, another sub, did just as badly, skewing
his strike wide. A Lolo corner in injury-time gave Marino a chance, but Ammed hooked his shot over. But the draw moved Marino a point clear at the top. There was not much to cheer about as leaders CD Marino lost 3-0 at Fuerteventura’s second-placed El Cotillo on Wednesday, surrendered their top spot. They are at home against San Fernando this Sunday, with a noon kick-off.
Paloma scored for the home side after four minutes, but Espanyol equalised after 23 minutes and looked to be holding on for a point. But Luana earned the gratitude of her teammates - and the crowd - by wrapping it with just seven minutes to go.
There has been some Tenerife flag-waving in Jordan, where the Ladies Under-17 World Cup is taking place until 23rd October, and Egatesa Granadilla twins Natalia and Noelia Ramos are featuring prominently for Spain. Moves are under way for the Egatesa ladies team to become part of the CD Tenerife set-up with a change of name and badge. Ladies President Sergio Batista believes it will make them more representative of the Island, and it will also give them the support of Tenerife’s biggest sporting club.
Rallying
The only way is up!
FOR the 14th year, highly-tuned rally cars will screech uphill against the clock on the TF51 between Arona old town and La Escalona next Saturday. The road will be closed to the public from 7.30am, so plan another route if you’re out and about.
The flavour is extremely international this year, with five nonSpanish teams competing. The biggest coup is in the Italian sector because Simone Fagioli, European mountainracing champion, will be spinning his wheels. The build-up starts
next Friday, the cars gathering for registration and tests at Parque Santiago 6 from 3pm. On Saturday, there will be two big driving sessions, from 11.30am and 2 pm. Prize-giving will take place at 4.30pm in Arona’s Plaza del Cristo de La Salud.
